yep uh i do want to mention that we have our next live show to announce We were at Shoeless Joe's on Queens Quay last night. I want to thank the Shoeless Joe's staff and everybody there. That was amazing. They were great. It was so much fun. It was kind of nice to get out on a Tuesday. It's been a long time.

And everybody that showed up, you guys were amazing, despite the terrible game. And we are 0-2 in live shows that feature a Leaf game this year for goals. No goals. Not a single goal. We didn't get one at Greta. We don't get one at Shoeless Joe. They've been shut out, I think, twice this season.

Yeah. We had a live show for both. I didn't realize that. Wow. We picked them. Yay. Yay us. I don't know if they had ever been previously shut out at a live show of ours.

No. Now, I'll tell you this. When we did the Generals and the Peterborough Peets, that was not a shutout. There was like 15 goals scored that game. Yes. That was awesome. So this will not be a shutout game. I can almost guarantee it.

The Leafs forgot how to score five on five. And in the last five games, there have been zero Leaf forwards that have scored a goal five on five. Zero. Connor Timmons is the only player to score five on five. And and and beyond all that, this is a game against the senators in your barn on a Tuesday night. I was driving home from Shoeless Joe's last night and I saw a guy in a white suit, guys tailored head to toe. And he had like a racing line down the trouser part of his of his of his suit.

And it was all blue and white. And he had leaf like pieces all over. It was all glittery. He was a young guy. And he got all dressed up and I was like, he went and got dressed up and paid all that money to be at that game. and see that what happened i dude i've gone live like i think i've been to one game in my entire life where the leafs got shut out i think it was three nothing and it's just a horrible experience like you don't even get to cheer once i was talking to a habs fan today who had the misfortune of being at the seattle game a couple weeks ago that habs lost eight two two though they got to go hooray twice if you're a leaf fan you didn't even get to go hooray what did you cheer for the

t-shirt toss it's freaking garbage like they stopped doing the t-shirt toss now it's the uh adidas shirts they drop from the building you know the ones from the rafter which i think is cool oh yeah yeah i love that yeah i wonder if it's less likely for like elbow related injury i think it's more likely because the amount of time it takes to drop from the ceiling yeah ever yeah They still have the t-shirt, Josh. This is the next level of it. It's like Plinko, and you're like, oh, it's going to fall towards me. No, no, don't do it while you're going over there.

It starts drifting. We should have known. We should have known they were going to blow this. And the reason we should have known is, what did we talk about yesterday during the live show? Oh, it's the Ridley-Grigg game. Hey, guys, do we care about that? And the answer was mostly no.

And I pointed out the very valid facts that, yeah, The reason Leaf fans didn't value the Ridley-Grigg game, the first game that counted between Morgan Rielly and Ridley-Grigg since their incident, the reason it didn't resonate with us is Morgan Rielly, even though he got suspended, is not the one who got cross-checked in the face. Rielly was suspended five games.

The Leafs won all of them. The Leafs didn't really even pay for what happened there. And last night was the Sens making them pay the whole time. That game meant something to them. The reason the Leafs keep getting killed in the Battle of Ontario... Like, last season they went 3-1, the Senators did. The one game the Leafs won. Against the Leafs.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The Sens went 3-1 against the Leafs. The Sens, who were terrible and didn't make the playoffs, they dominated the Leafs. They scored three goals or more in every game. They scored six goals twice. The only game the Leafs won, Joseph Wohl stole and got hurt in the middle of...

And Martin Jones took over. And Martin Jones took over, and the Sens almost came back and won. The Battle of Ontario, like, there was a discussion yesterday in Leaf Circles, like, is it a thing anymore? Does it matter? Yes, it frigging is, and yes, it frigging does. It's just one-sided. The Sens care about this. The Leafs don't.

They just flatly don't. And it sucks. The Leafs are the ones not upholding their end of the bargain in this battle. they're not holding up their end of the bargain in this rivalry they're the reason it's not holding up because it's not even a rivalry the Leafs rivalry with the Sens since 2004 resembles the Leafs rivalry with the damn Bruins like you gotta show up for these games they didn't even show up you got ran out of the building this wasn't getting shut out against Montreal where you double them up in shots this was a team came in your barn scored 41 seconds in and you were never

in it it's unacceptable you can't have it and this is after making fun of the penguins for allowing six goals uh in the first period on home ice is this better than that yeah is it much better no pretty relevant too that in the second period so the first goal comes within the first minute of the first period in the second period the other two sends goals come within a minute of each other And they are, the Michael Amadio goal especially, which is the third goal, is they are completely, they're not even in it. They're not playing.

They're lost. They're lost. And what is it? Their forwards were not helping their D at all. James Myrtle tweeted this. Horrible game for the Leafs. I would call it the worst of the year, but they've had a few. They generated just .7 expected goals at 5-on-5,

which is the third lowest for any NHL team in a game this year. They can't find a good mix, eh? Like, we all seem to agree the goaltending and defense is better. They need a third-line center. Like, Robert Malloy, like, it just burst out of him yesterday. Someone goes, Steve, what do you think of the comeback? They doing the 3-0 comeback? And Robert Malloy just goes, not these guys.

Not these Leafs. That's not what they do. um the the fun uh no game is actually over rightly or wrongly leafs that's over uh they can't score at will anymore um which means if you go down in 41 seconds on home ice you're in trouble yeah there they are so you want to compete for the division you want home ice in the playoffs win this game right win this game get a point out of this game hey how about this there's 82 games that's so many freaking games you're not going to win them all show up you what were the shots like 40 to 25 you stink through two periods the highest expected goals on the team guys

were neil and mcmahon at 30 holmberg nyes domey marner doer and benoit were at 10 or lower which is depressing because doer looked like the only guy trying it's certain yeah yeah so so he was like a tiger who saw grass for the first time after getting let out of the circus right oh god so i want to i want to go through the line combinations because i think they're interesting you call up alex steves who's the one of the top scorers in the ahl and i understand why they didn't dress him the first night you better play tonight but you have matthews out and you have patch ready out two pretty key pieces to the top six offense you need offense and so what you do is you slot mcmahon next to tavaris and nylander where he looked really good last year and i would

say he earned his extension last year playing against playing with those twos i didn't love his game last night but yes he did nice domi who has uh says a 10 game pointless streak he is very obviously not himself so i give him i give him somewhat of a mulligan but like your first line center right now we need you yeah and he's just not effective at all the line i want to i do want a spotlight is robertson holmberg doer and the reason i say that is that is a line of nothing there i can see mcmahon tavaris nylander working i could see nice domi marner working and in fact nice domi marner did we've seen it yeah we have seen it work we've seen i've seen mcmahon tavaris nylander work i know yeah i know holmberg doer robertson will not yeah and i'm trying to

three men here are three guys random men can they create plays uh not any one of them can anyone drive a line no okay uh are they responsible defensively yeah uh Dewar's first game yeah Holmberg's been a neutral if not worse than neutral guy and Robertson is always hard on the puck but he's not gonna like drive a line Holmberg is right now worse than 13th forward to me like uh matthews is out patch already is out and i still if i had to dress my 12 best leaf forwards would not have him in the lineup right now alex steves is up you put steves with doer and robertson all of a sudden you got two guys who can generate offense and doer who's like more of a grunt but can also score um doer can play center steves can play center robertson's also you know obviously

a trigger man just some effort there it's holmberg is not a lazy player um he gets out there and tries and the reason i'm done there is he tries his absolute maximum every night and every shift and it's wildly not good enough like it's not close to good enough so if we're doing our 12 best guys thank you have a nice seat and we got to bring someone else in because we need goals and you ain't bringing them right jesse i want to know uh-huh from a guy who has you were not you you saw the game with us at the bar yesterday yes but you've seen this team five on five in person okay okay you've you've been prefacing everything with that these days because well i want to reinforce that it matters because it does matter singing person matters sure it does yeah what the

hell's going on i i one thing that's happened these last couple games is them winning and scoring on the power play has masked how much austin matthews is important to the lineup it goes down to them working the salary cap the way they do and that a lot of money is allocated to a certain amount of guys and max domey shouldn't be your number one center on any national hockey league team that's that's not that's not a way to win games two-way play like matthew's two-way play is just wildly underrated and i think this stretch is showing it yeah just he's important to this lineup and you see that when they don't have him they're working the scraps and like okay we can piecemeal this thing together but they need him back for for just for

the whole core to get going and like there are some holes there in the forward group and what i think they need is some sort of i don't know maybe it's alex steves who gives them the spark but matthews coming back is going to be that and they need to start looking towards the trade deadline if they're going to be serious and upgrading somewhere in the forward group i i i i don't expect alex steves to save their whole damn season exactly but uh like pontus holmberg is slightly more defensive orientated or oriented um center slash wing steves is that but offensive they need goals steves put in steves and and it's not like connor doer can't play some defense right and like callie yarncroft's gonna come back which is gonna be important and this won't be

the first or last injury you're gonna have we saw max patch already go out austin matthews though and who's the next guy who's gonna go down who's gonna ruin the lineup they're like ah you know but injuries injuries are going to happen and they need to find some way to not just go completely uh disappear at five on five when they have a couple injuries it's been bad and again John Tavares William Nylander Mitch Marner I know Matthews is out I know he is I know he's important what do you mean you can't score Willie's play last night was not great at all not acceptable and and and Berube was screaming at him as as he should yeah and I know he missed practice so he's probably not a hundred percent Domi's probably not a hundred percent and the you

know they didn't reschedule the game no the games keep happening and one thing that's really unfortunate for the leafs and this little schedule crunch is they have all of these back-to-backs like they're playing again tonight back-to-back with travel and the next week is their weird week where they have the entire week off except for a game against vegas on wednesday and it's like that's unfortunately that's how the league works you got fucked in the scheduling in november and here when you needed some time off you have all of your game but it's not like you were surprised by it no you do yeah you know you know the schedule back in june yeah the next week is that is like low-key really important to their season because you you pick up a decent amount

of points here you pick up more than half of the available points here over the next week you have almost the whole back half of november to lick your wounds yeah like that the late november schedule you know who knows maybe patch ready comes back in early december maybe yarn croak comes back yanni hockenpah is eventually going to play his first game connor doer um should be playing at 100 he looked at 100 last night um it should cure a lot of what ails them but in the meantime you have games and you need to win them yeah i assume that was the philosophy behind keeping matthews out in that like hey we have this week where we have one game coming up if we can get him through edmonton well washington uh today and then edmonton on saturday if we can

get through those games without him then like that's so much time off for matthews but you gotta win games like every game is important so i don't know if it's maybe it's time to get him back here i do want to flag something connor mcdavid got four points last night he's sitting at 999 career points the oilers next game is against nashville and he better friggin hit against nashville because otherwise saturday is against the leafs no no please not here wasn't he also the 99th player to ever get 999 points was he i don't know i'm pretty sure that was from the nhl's uh instagram the list of guys to hit a thousand is not long it's shorter than you think i want to no there's more than 99 let me let me check i want to see

the number's 300 i don't know why 300 came to ah wi-fi has been that might that might be uh games played oh maybe not points i'm not sure when it's very difficult to hit a thousand points when the internet reloads i can tell you that's right adam what's next well i i wanted to mention that leafs pr tweeted out that yanni hockenbaugh has been recalled from his ltir conditioning loan and activated from ltr so he might play but i don't think that that's going to get them the goals they need so no but it's good news it's good news he's good he you sign him because he's ideally in your top six best defenseman so anything that makes the team better is good news but yeah you need goals i wasn't lying oh you can't see it oh everything's everything's

produce much everything's uh being reset i wasn't lying connor mcdavid is the 99th player all time to reach 999 points. I will never forget the Leafs for Jason Spezza. What are you talking about? 300 people. I know. I was wrong. I think that's games played. Spezza 995. I'm going to be

sick. There's only 98 people alive on planet Earth who can say they scored 1,000 goals in the NHL and Conor McDavid will become the 99th. Points, sorry. Points in the NHL and Conor McDavid will become the 99th which feels appropriate. Yeah. Dude, Dale Hunter, 1,020 points, 1,407 games played.

McDavid is going to pass him probably before Christmas. 658 games played. Look at, look at. Less than half. No one is anywhere, like even Pat LaFontaine. Pat LaFontaine had 1,013 points in 865 games. mcdavid is gonna beat him by about 200 games yeah yeah that's psychotic david might pass ryan getzlaff for career assists in the he's gonna pass him by next season he's gonna like

we're all arguing career we're all arguing mcgillney should be in the hall of fame he's going to smoke mcgillney smoke him wow mcdavid is gonna get to like jesse how many players have scored 1500 points in the nhl because he's gonna get there in his sleep oh i gotta go to page one he's gonna get there completely in his sleep oh wow 1500 is 16 people 16 people and he's gonna get there ha shooing the entire time he could do that in the next three years like we could be talking about that in three years oh mario 915 games played joe thornton played nearly 700 points that's crazy joe thornton played nearly triple the games mcdavid has and mcdavid once again is gonna hush you his way past all of them like holy shit that's so insane like crosby we keep talking

about as a like a potential top five scorer all time by the time his career is over and mcdavid should probably pass him mcdavid's gonna be like a top five scorer by the time his career is over yep yep that's nuts we're witnessing something real special it's very cool like for hockey history he needs to get one but please don't do it against toronto on saturday night because you know they'll let him nashville don't get cute and good all of a sudden yeah don't pick tonight to be good frig off frig off i i wouldn't put it past connor to just be like you know what coach i need to i feel like playing 14 minutes yeah you can pass no like oh god it's gonna happen you know that right uh it is it's probably gonna happen now uh now you just rewinding a second we talked

about nylander for a second and the yelling and berube on the bench and nylander came out and spoke to the media after a bad game not jesse he was uh slacking at our show he said uh so they asked him about it and he said i mean you hear him talking i don't see what he's doing back there or whatever but i think it's great you know sometimes it's called for and the team needs a bit of a wake up call that's great it's right attitude to have that's what i would expect william nylander to have and to say i think he is that kind of guy that's like yeah i need to be yelled at a few times but and i and i it's it's almost a little bit like to the uh it's like inglorious bastards like i've been chewed out before you know uh him and sheldon keith i know for a fact him and

sheldon keith buttheads a few times and keith had to threaten to scratch him at least once yeah um this is gonna happen at least once a game perhaps yeah yeah probably um you know berube's already gotten into it with his guys uh a few times and willie and you know i i just wonder is barubi just uh like a harder coach or was the previous regime too soft are we just not used to seeing this anymore right because babcock i feel like wouldn't ream his guys out on the bench he would you know wait until the locker room and then play you know try to mind fuck him um but it's uh this team needs to be ridden hard they need a coach like this and willie needs a coach like this to bring out the best in him that we all agree that this team is really really talented

um and the stars on it are really talented they need a hard ass like this to bring it out of i wonder too with whatever move they make up front and it's pretty clear that they will right eventually they're going to i think probably you know uh with with callie yarncroke going to new york to see a specialist because he had a setback in his rehab i don't know i don't know what that's not good i don't know what that means for timelines but if he hasn't even skated this year i would imagine that that's probably january at the earliest yeah uh and so i would have i think what they were expecting cap wise is that cali would have come back by now and that they would have been able to try him at third line center and then see how that went and then go

make a move but again i don't think he's the full-time least third line hl center anymore They need, I think whoever they bring in, you know, when the senators were on the hunt for like a character guy last year, one guy they identified was Chris Tana. We need a guy who's like a, I forgot about that. A general, uh, uh, you know, he's, he's going to not just lead by example, but he is going to, he is going to speak up when there's something to be said in the room, whatever. I think this Leafs team could use another, uh, type of guy like a Berube, but on, on the bench.

and he doesn't have to be the best player but you look at what i i think about specifically gary roberts what he brought to toronto when he signed here and he was here for two years it should have been more about the stupid lockout and gary brought a level of intensity and still does that is almost unmatchable that was what was so special he was a great player but also he he had this level of intensity that a lot of times could rub guys the wrong way pissed people off Sure. But it was also a challenge. It was like, like I'm giving, I'm Gary Roberts and I'm 35.

And there was a point in my career where my nerves were so bad, I couldn't lift my hand over my head. And yet here I am scoring an overtime goal in the third overtime against the Ottawa Senators in the playoffs. I'm fucking clutch. What are you? And, and I think that whoever they go out and they target, they do need to pay a lot more attention to the type of personality they bring into this room, I think, more than the

previous regime did. And I do think they are paying attention to that. I do think they recognize that they want to see who flourishes a hundred percent. And I don't think that the previous regime cared as much. And that's why you did kind of get a lot of non personalities in that room. And if you did get personalities, let's be honest about Thornton and Marlowe, they never won anything. And so I want to see a guy who maybe he hasn't won a cup yet but i would like to see a winner and i'd like to see someone who's tougher older can still play can give you a couple good years and is going to be a guy that that guys can can rally around outside of the top four how many times have do we need to hear tra living said it o'reilly said it we have to de-emphasize the core four it's time

now it's time now well like we need someone else if kneelators having a shit game martyr's been playing great he had an off game Tavares did his best didn't have a great game we do need someone else and I'm sorry it's not gonna be Connor Dewar that's not fair to Connor Dewar he's not gonna be Pontus Holmberg it's not gonna be Nick Robertson it's got to be somebody Nick Robertson can look up to McMahon is fun and works hard it ain't him Dewar is fun and works hard it ain't him Robertson's fun and works hard it ain't him like you need more than he works hard right and if you are going to dress the fourth line that you dress which is a more expensive fourth line than most teams i don't even mind them they're doing their job but it means that you need your third line to

be able to score yes yes like the the fourth line is an nhl fourth line the third line is not even close second and first lines are fine um that third line is a real uh blemish uh on the team right now i like pairings one through three the fourth line does its job it no the third line is a non-option for anything really like you don't really it's the justin bourne thing you don't put them out there when you need a goal you don't put them out there when you need to stop okay what do you do here that's the fourth line that's they just happen to play more than the fourth honestly like it was probably the frustration speaking uh i didn't let it escape my head it was just in my head but i'll let it escape my head now it was the third period and i'm like just play the fourth

line more like at least positive things in general are happening there you really can put some put some pressure on there was one point i can't remember when it was maybe the second period where ryan reeves actually had an opportunity and he shot and like it wasn't even fucking close but i'm like yeah you know what cool like you're putting pucks on net ish in the general direction of the net you're banging and crashing you're winning puck battles the third line doesn't do any of that shit they're brutal i i'm not ready to say elevate david camp don't don't do it don't do it why break up a good thing yeah don't yes thank you adam thank you for talking me down because you could have you could have two good first top two lines yeah and you could have a

good third line if you move david calf you run the risk of having two shitty lines and we already know he can't do it yeah he's already done there's enough evidence of him not being able to do it he's doing great down there um but that third line yeah like that's why i like i every year it feels like throughout the history of lfr uh for any lfr historians i find some minor leaguer and I go, you just got to play him more. to have him in the minors in my opinion like uh it'd be great to give fraser mitten his ice time by having him here. I don't know what comes of Holmberg. I don't like the idea of losing him for nothing, but when Pacioretty and Matthews come back, oh boy, he's just not one of your top 12 options. I don't think he's one of your top 13. Get Steve's in the lineup and score some goals.

Did Steve's and Robertson play together a lot with the Marlies? That is a good question. I'm not sure. Okay. Not yet, no. They could be anything. They definitely score less and allow less. They have great goaltending and that has been able to keep them in games that they shouldn't have been. Stallers has been absolutely magical And I think that's become a new feature of the Leafs that we haven't had in recent memory where, hey, we have a really, really good goaltender who can actually keep us in games and steal some wins and steal some goals that should have been in the back of the net, which is, I think, really cool.

So that's a big thing about this team this season. I assume Wolves playing tonight. Yeah. Back to back. Even if the plan was to double shift Stullers, which I don't understand why you would do that. You faced more than 40 shots last night. Yeah. But Wolves also been like decent.

always seemingly furious when the penguins lost even when they were competitive uh he had plenty to be angry about this season and this afternoon when he was still a member of the penguins he spoke about the team's malaise he said the adversity we're going through has to make us better we need to grow from it and improve we talked the players talked the coaches talked we are uh we are where we are we need to crawl out of it and find our way back in one game at a time one shift at a time and then when asked who needs to be better he said everybody then he was traded now what's interesting about this is uh seth also tweeted this and i love this the and steve you will especially love this okay he said if i'm reading pugpedia correctly the 2025 fifth rounder

that the Penguins acquired in the Eller trade has been around the block. It was a pick that Washington sent to Pittsburgh. Washington acquired it from Toronto in the... Oh, Joel Edmondson deal. We talked about this on the show yesterday, but I think it's really worth bringing up because Taylor Hasse, who is a writer for DK Sports Pittsburgh, said in one of her columns that a it said the league source told me earlier this week that Kyle Dubas has made it known to other teams that, quote, everyone is available except 87.

And it's interesting. I bring this up on the show yesterday at Shoeless Joe's and Jesse goes, we have a trade to announce. And it's Lars Eller. Well, and what I said was, do all the guys with no movements know that? Yeah, well, and there are a lot. I want to get to that. And I think it was interesting what Taylor wrote. She said, and while Dubas has done well to replenish the pool with picks and prospects over the last year or so, the objective of any near future moves wouldn't be to add more futures. Rather, it would be to acquire actual players back since this isn't a tear it down to the studs rebuild, as Dubas likes to say. He remains committed to trying to win with at least Crosby. Ownership made a promise to Crosby over the summer that the Penguins would be better this season. Now, I don't know how ownership or Crosby could have believed that.

I do. Yeah, so you told this Matt Sundin story yesterday, but do a quick one for anybody that didn't catch the Shoeless Joe show. So Inside Home and Away, which is Matt Sundin's book, and it's just really, really good. He tells the story and he paints a picture. I think it was the 07-08 season, which was his last season as a Leaf, first season of LFR. home obviously it's his home this is where my life is obviously it's where his life is But Sundin, if Sundin could delude himself into thinking that Leafs team was remotely close to competing for anything, then Sidney Crosby could easily think that his Penguins could compete. The goalies that year, Vesa Toskala with a 9.04 save percentage, Raycroft with an 8.76. Raycroft as a backup was unplayable. And Cleminson played a few games. two notable players on that team sunday with 78 points antropop with 56 cabaret 53 jason blake 52 and alexander steen who they'd later trade with 42 not a great team no dude no not a great team at all sunday did win the messier award that year oh good for him paul maurice was the coach wasn't

so you broke down all six goals using nhl edge yeah yeah i did a quick run through of all six goals and it was a lot of fun and a couple takeaways from that uh crosby was was coming back real slow on one of them and he just looks so sad his little 87 dot failing to play as his defenseman completely blew it and i i shed a little tear for him on that but a couple a couple actual takeaways matt grizzlik looks awful ryan graves looks awful and chris letang was on the ice for a lot of those goals and was a big part of a couple of the errors that led for it to go directly into the back of the net so their their defensemen who are supposed to be playing good defense aren't aren't there for them and then goaltending bloomquist is supposed to be the next

of the hero to save because jari's so bad let in a few stinkers gets pulled and then nedeljkovic comes in who's supposed to be the guy who's gonna fill in because jari's out as well also lets in a couple stinkers and then jari's all unplayable so yes i don't know what's supposed to be working with the whole lineup if you're not getting any offense because like logan o'connor is on your first line with crosby or whatever you're doing with the lineup and then all your defense is is bad and is making every wrong pass they should make and then your goaltending stinks where is the redeemable qualities about the penguins roster i i said it before like dubas if he had a real weakness um man the decors that he put together in toronto were just not good

And should have had his career ended like four different times. How many career-threatening injuries has LeTang faced? It's insane.

If you have to choose where to attack against the Penguins, I mean, Carlson, LeTang, all right, pick that side. But other side is Graves and Grisly, dude. It's free square for offenses that want to attack. What I was saying yesterday, and maybe this is part of the reason why they moved Lars Eller, like, okay, you get a couple draft picks, but you get some cap room, too. What I was saying is every time a player clears waivers, I look at the Penguins and I'm like, are you sure? Well, they don't have the room. If they wanted Favreau, they don't have the room.

Hopefully they do now. Now things are kind of, maybe we got some a little bit of room. Yeah, oh, this guy is, oh, and they're assigning him to the, you couldn't use him? I saw a tweet, I think it was Jesse Marshall retweeted somebody. He was like, oh, it just goes to show that charts don't win hockey games. Like Matt Gryzlik especially is a guy that is drowning, drowning right now. And he's playing first pair. and and uh i i thought i thought you would find this extra interesting gentleman uh there is a report out of sweden today from radio sport and i saw that uh and this is the former captain and general manager uh he's a former team a sweden head coach and gm uh johan uh garpenloff and i didn't i don't know this name but i guess he's oh i know i know johan okay all right well there you go uh he said that eric carlson shouldn't even be going to the four nations and and i just did a google translate that's an overstatement he said i would have not selected eric carlson

for this four nation squad by the way eric's already on the squad he was one of the five that they announced his shortcomings in the defensive game are too great in such a tournament every match is important and you can't afford these big mistakes that eric carlson unfortunately does now i last time that they they played the world cup carlson was the captain and i have to tell you i don't know who you'd replace him with but the way eric carlson has played this year i agree he's bad he's bad and he missed training camp with some sort of mystery shows up game one and it looks like shit and has continued to look bad and i care of expected goals is still positive well it always is though it's eric carlson i don't think that's the problem with the game that

that this this uh i think johan uh is showing he's talking about the defense it sounds like something personal because that's a little disrespectful he's he's one of the greatest swedish players of all time sure to ever step foot in the nhl but what have you done for me lately in his career he isn't bad enough to be left off of an international roster for sweden that's that's that's a wild i i want eric carlson in a short winner take all tournament yeah this is this is ridiculous all right but no like i think it's just worth a defensive play are valid but Like, I feel like Eric Carlson's never really been a mystery. We know what he is.

Because usually with defensemen, when they're less fleet of foot, which Eric is, because there's some pretty severe injuries to that ankle, and the fact that he is still playing is a miracle. the fact that his offensive game is kept up has been great a lot of guys have to stay alive by playing defense by by learning and playing a different game or how about this the penguins

don't have mark the thought coming through the door right to save his bacon that was a great batman and robin yes uh setup that they have totally and and i'm not sure how often grizzlik is his partner, but like, I, I, I wanted to look something up with him just to confirm my assumption. So in 2020, shoot, I lost it. Sorry. Uh, 2020 and 2021 in 37 games with the Bruins. So not very many, he got up to 1945 per game in terms of time on ice and the Bruins were like, okay let's let's dial that back the three seasons that followed 1844 1714 1736 Dubas goes and gives him a bunch of money he's playing 2011 he's never in his NHL career average 20 minutes or more a night so this is when you structure a cap that way though I feel like we said this last show

No, but what he did was he took a bet with a depth defenseman, like a second or third pair guy on the Bruins, and he said he can play more here, and it's not working. And what did he do with the Graves deal? Is that not the same thing? It feels like he did that a lot with the Leafs, is, you know what, for efficiency's sake, this guy can do it. this guy has been a career this and I bet he can do this and it's just guys drowning out there

yeah it's just guys drowning yeah and listen Eric Carlson has put up 10 points in 17 games and he may not be the biggest problem on the Penguins but my point in this is you need someone to you have you have your ceiling who's your ceiling higher with Grizzly or Carlson uh I think Eric carlson right so so if eric carlson isn't playing well it affects the team more than matt grizzlik not playing well right that's a that's a pretty obvious thing and it's not to pick on eric per se it's more to go what is the goal here like like even pens fans are going like okay so you trade larzeller and and you get your third and your fifth even though you want player for player trades you didn't get it but you did get some cap room and you can move that third and that

fifth for somebody else i had to laugh about that like what are you gonna do we were we were like, oh, what's a player-for-player trade they could do? And then it's, oh, Lars Eller for two picks. And you know what? Capspace is super valuable. Of course it is. Especially to a team like the Penguins. But if you want to rebuild on the fly, what are you rebuilding with? What are you rebuilding with?

What is... Hold on. Who's the big guy in the system? Rucker McGordy? Boy, he looked... I think Rucker McGordy did more to damage his value at the NHL level just by playing. Yeah. So who else is in your system that you can move to get...

So you might not want to be the GM that trades Crosby, but you might have to be the GM that trades Letang. You might have to be the GM that trades Geno. And what's coming back? How about forget the system? Geno has 13 assists. Crosby has 10. I don't know whose goals they assisted on.

Who leads the Penguins in goals? And how many goals is it? It's two guys. They're tied. Okay. Is it Kevin Hayes? No. no no it's what uh one is a usual suspect and one is a usual suspect if you're a nerd

oh okay yeah all right jesse any thoughts any guesses what's you want to know who's leading the penguins and goals in goals uh brian rust no no okay who ricard raquel okay and sydney crosby are tied with six 13 assists from where on who so they must every goal must go through those two players I mean basically no it's it's Malkin with 18 points in 17 games I don't know how that's a miracle Crosby 16 points in 17 games and the drop-off is just like through the earth's crust um they they don't defend they don't have goaltending they can't score they're in a world of shit yep i think in a world of shit dude i think it's fair to look at the carlson trade and

and still wonder why dubas did it because at the time uh if we remember the we all thought it would be impossible for san jose to dump that 11.5 i think it was a 10.5 um no it was 11.5 and i think the penguins got them to retain so that it's 10 yeah so the 11.5 at the time we all thought like it's he's he's done like he's got to sit in san jose forever and some the rumors were at the time like hey if san jose is willing to eat 50 maybe somebody will take him and all that stuff and then it never happened and then he has that crazy 100 point season they're like oh he can do it again but the idea of him not being worth that contract never went away like he put up all those points on a terrible san jose team and dubas went out and he sent a first round pick to acquire

this player who everybody kind of agreed wasn't worth the price and like i'm just i'm looking at the deal like grandland is doing very well for san jose very well i think even like somebody has to score for a bad team yeah i i don't care about the bodies ryan dezingle was a 20 goal score with the senators and then wasn't when he got traded he didn't even make roster yeah i don't really care about the bodies that went the other way i care about the first round pick and you having now a 10 million dollars on your cap yeah that you can't spend another way because i think those are the most egregious errors by dubas if i remember correctly uh jesse to back your point up a lot of people said okay well it's got to be 50 and and i remember at the time people go well

So what if you got Carlson at eight million? That seems like a pretty fair deal because you're getting a guy coming off a Norris Trophy year and that's great. But also, is it Norris Trophy and repeatable or is it Norris Trophy and it's Mark Giordano and he's 35 and the chances of that repetition and things getting better are pretty limited. And he goes and but Kyle loves Eric Carlson. Yes. Loves him. That's noted fact. It's Eric Carlson.

And he wanted to make a splash. the penguins might have two hall of fame right-handed defense and it's but and it's completely useless to them right now yeah that is the problem yeah that is the problem you acquired a second hall of fame level right shot defenseman who just came off 100 points and it's useless to you that's a fucking problem guys yeah that's that's where i'm like you're how do you not have the foresight it's an awkward fit in the best times it was a it was a norris trophy but was it an ors trophy or did he just put up 100 points as a defenseman you know it's it's because you're all of those seasons before he was he wasn't healthy you know and he wasn't putting up those

much incentive to trade off them I was like maybe Nick Abruzzese who is like a pick of his but like he's got two goals to assist four points in 10 games right now like that's not bringing you into playoff contention magically they're in a world of shit they're in deep deep trouble and we called this I think it was before he even took the job we were just if I remember correctly we were just talking about the vacancy in pittsburgh and i'm like that's a horrible job because you either have to compete year in and year out with crosby and malkin and everyone with no assets to spend in order to do that uh or you need to be the man who dismantled that dynasty he's made his choice well the the dynasty's over the dismantling hasn't begun but the dynasty's over know that

do long term but it's gonna have to work for us right now can you find your game Jesse and Steve that quickly do you think and does it even matter at this point for a team that really can't score anyway i i think you can find your game that quickly i think especially with goalies sometimes you just need a mental reset um i i think you know are you going to be able to trade jari no you're going to be able to trade nadalkovich i don't know i don't know if it does anything one thing the penguins do need to be cognizant of like this blumquist kid seems like he could be good you're currently in the process of destroying this player send him down what the fuck are you doing letting this poor kid get shelled every night expecting him to be your savior oh they're

and then you see how it goes and i think jari has a chance at a redemption arc which would be cool but i don't know if there's enough in front of him to help him that much but i think he needs to play a little better and he will yeah i don't know yeah because he is better than what he's he's He's better than a five whatever goals against Everett. Do you guys know what Marc-Andre Fleury was traded for when he was traded the 2021 offseason after he won the Vesla? It was like a weird low round pick, wasn't it? It was him and a $7 million salary, which he had at the time. That's essentially what he was traded for. It was a Finnish guy who I'm pretty sure played in the ECHL. He's from Helsinki. So I found it interesting when Bill Daly reminded general managers of the league's tampering rules at the league's general manager meetings this week, according to TSN's Pierre Lebrun. um tampering was a scheduled part of the agenda for meetings daily also reminded gms of the penalties for tampering including fines and loss of draft picks daily was uncomfortable with reports about teams agreeing to contracts with free agents before free agency officially opened teams cannot talk before noon eastern on july 1st unless given permission by the team that owns a player's rights and usually they won't give you permission they'll make you trade for them like the leaps had to do with the Dallas Stars and Chris Tanev. But agents can also talk to teams, right?

Yes. And that doesn't fall under the tampering rule. That's right. Like if Alan Walsh had a client, he's like, he goes to the Canadians, like, you know what? This guy kind of wants to sign with the Canadians. Let's work out a deal.

And then on July 1st, it's magically solved. That's not tampering. Are you sure? Yes. Well, that's the rule. Yeah. And to be clear, like there are specific things. I think, you know what?

You know who did the best example of it? It was Richard Petty when he was trying to not tamper and sign Brian Burke out of Anaheim to run the the Maple Leafs. He would say something like, man, Brian, wouldn't living in Toronto be great? Yeah. Like, yeah. You know, if I was going to hire somebody for a position like that, I would pay them three million dollars a year. Yeah. And I would. I would help them go to restaurants and enjoy the fine food scene here. But I guess what's happened, that is the way non-tampering tampering used to happen. But I guess it's become so out in the open that the league's like, all right, all right. Here are some players that are reported to have signed contracts before free agency even

opened last summer. Okay. Tyler Bertuzzi. Yep. Brandon Montour. Tyler Toffoli. And Brett Pesci. Those are big names.

Okay. That's so many names. And, and there is, and we do our free agency show here. We show up at 10 and we know half the deals before they happen. And as soon as noon happens, we make like half a dozen videos before noon just to, because we already know. Yeah. And I, I get to the point where I wonder what is, I know the players are under contract.

I know there was a point when the NHL experimented with players being allowed to agree to a deal before the contract expired, right? We did have that talking week that they used to have. There used to be a negotiation window in between the draft and the free agency opening. So what? And I know that— Just formalizing tampering.

Sure. Decriminalizing tampering. And then they recriminalized it. Yes. I don't know why they did that. Probably because they tried to stuff the NHL awards, the draft, and free agency. Oh, and Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final

into the same fucking week. In like five seconds. But wondering from my perspective is, what is the solution here? obviously, if there's rules, people are going to push them. Because if you don't, if you're not trying to get around whatever is written. You wouldn't need the rule.

Right. It's like Sean Avery blinding Martin Brodeur. They didn't have a rule for it because they're like, well, I don't know. Who's going to do that? Hockey's been around for nearly a century and no one had done it. So we didn't think we needed to say it. But all right, now there's a rule.

So that's my question to you guys. what's the solution to prevent this and by the way if everybody's doing it who are you gonna find everybody are you gonna take away everybody's first round pick so we just start in the second round sorry all you good players you can't get drafted i don't think there needs to be a solution here i think it's just like bill daly tut tut and all the gms and be like hey be better about tampering and then they'll all just be better come this offseason like i feel like they have a good system here where technically you can just ask like hey can we talk to this player and the team can be like yeah go talk to him or call an agent to broker the deal between the two teams so

then it's not technically tampering because the agent can talk to whoever they want like i feel like he's just being all bad about this and be like don't do that again and then you're gonna go and sneak out again uh i think uh they need to put mike babcock in charge of all this yeah because he'll go through your phone hey i accuse this team of tampering oh you do damn that's crazy let me see your phone you know what never mind never mind i can i take back the nope yeah never mind uh you did it too you know you did it too i want to know bill daily said this for a reason i don't think it's just oh we didn't like it it was no bill william who narked who's the big pants shitting baby who narked about this yeah somebody got too sloppy

executive he offers unmatched expertise in a wide wide range of areas holland joins nhl operations after serving as president of hockey operations uh the admins and owners blah blah the university and there's a whole bunch of stuff about how great ken holland is so you know what do you guys thing with ken holland so at very least he's got a resume that features thing after thing after thing it's a great resume um i couldn't help but uh be reminded of this excerpt from the press release of uh colin campbell getting inducted into the hockey hall of fame one of the things on his resume they put there were 221 players who this this this colons for when he was this not this press release no no not this press release okay this is a one from like a couple

days before okay okay there were 221 players who skated under campbell during his time coaching the red wings and rangers including seven who went on to become nhl general managers mel bridgman kevin lowe craig mctavish jim nill mike o'connell pat verbeek and steve heiserman one of the resume items for colin campbell getting into the hall of fame is he hires his friends so like yeah ken holland it's just them hiring another guy they know but they have worse guys let him in screw it let him in his resume is better than this guy this is it's so blatant hey, Ken Holland was sitting around without a job. Let's give him a paycheck.

Now, they're expecting this to be a long trial because of the amount of detail the amount of players and they have to have

because, you know, obviously every year, you and your company, right here, I'm gonna give them a little shout out here, you guys get behind this, but you've actually experienced testicular cancer. Yeah, so it's kind of a crazy story. We were in our 10th year of raising money, kind of lost some friends to cancer,

and that kind of gave it some meaning. so it was october 31st um big halloween dressing up guy so i've got my uh beau bouchette wig on and my son's uh dressed up as springer great yeah there's a good picture of it um and then yeah all of a sudden my wife kind of looks over and she's like you know you're kind of i know you're a ball player but you're kind of touching yourself a lot and i'm like what are you talking about and uh yeah so it just happened i started to get some irregular testicular pain on the eve of the 10th year of movember uh so yeah crazy crazy to happen yeah and you and you've had to go through the entire experience of testicular cancer from uh first off googling symptoms uh and the anxiety

that comes with that to actually going through an operation which is actually a lot more invasive than people realize yeah so first scare i had about seven years ago i started googling and gave myself every symptom thought i was gonna die and you know didn't connect with movember at all uh the next time through I knew all the the guides I knew how to check I knew they had a mentor system so I emailed them it was the eve October 31st I went emailed them and said you know you're not gonna believe this it's the 10th year anniversary of raising money and it's me and uh you know it was just crazy they emailed me back the next morning said what do you want to do I said uh find me somebody you know I'm staying off google find me someone that's had this type

and uh kind of lead me in that direction so the mentorship was was just just amazing but you said invasive so um i had a hockey team uh coaching a hockey team on saturday i told them i couldn't be there my operation was saturday afternoon i told them i'll be there monday night and i didn't yeah i didn't google it i thought they kind of was like neutering your cat um but it turned out like a radical inguinal archiectomy you actually you didn't play hockey in 48 hours i coached i coached no you go in through the stomach essentially yeah so they cut through your inguinal through your abdomen go down into your testicle pull your testicle out um clamp everything back up and they want to pull all your lymph nodes with it as well because wow natural

so your natural progression of cancer usually is testicular to pelvis through your lymph nodes so i did not know that um so i think i just youtube'd it quickly and saw the opening i'm like nope yeah oh my god some things you do not want but what is amazing is and then i love and i love this story uh because it it ends with you actually showed up i did so i walked through the auto doors uh it's it's 48 hours i'm i'm a wreck i can barely walk i'm imagining you like literally limping out of the hospital with the iv drip still attached like i didn't get one no okay all right down and everything they took that yeah they took great care of me so i hadn't walked at all i said okay i'm just gonna go i'm gonna say my speech like i always do and the boys are gonna go play this is

my u13 uh rep team who just won the bobby uh or hall of fame tournament on the weekend yeah all right shout out ethan donovito with the ot winner four three ot nice love that uh so yeah walk through the doors and like the kids knew roughly that i had a surgery for cancer but the parents obviously knew the whole story so the doors slide open and i just see their faces and they're like holy crap he's really here and like dressing rooms are to the left i always go there but the bathroom was the right so i'm getting queasy i'm playing everything's starting to pull now so i go to the right i go in the bathroom splashing my face my this is a teaching moment for the boys i can do this i can do this so walk down to the dressing room i turn the corner and it's probably

one of my best memories ever um they had already drawn all the kids had mustaches drawn oh so it was uh so they had the mustaches drawn um usually i have like a pre-game speech uh my trainer uh rob and and uh steve and lonnie had the speech done in reverse so all the kids had a line and they all read the game plan back to me which is perfect i said a little speech and then i sit down on the bench and i know i got my leg up because everything's tightening up i'm getting a cramp and my son comes over no and he says dad you're you're coming on the bench right i'm like oh geez no i don't know if i can do that bud like it's only it was two days ago i didn't explain the surgery so oh my god i gotta do it so i would work up on oh my god oh my god so my wife's up

in the stands in her seat and my dad's sitting behind the glass and i come out of uh out of the room sorry i come out of the room there you go and i look up at my wife and we've been together forever so she looks in my eyes and she's like no way he's going and i kind of look at her sheepishly and put my head down yeah she knows it's coming then i walk to the corner where my dad always sits and he's standing in the glass and he kind of looks at me like this he just goes and he puts his head down went around stood on the bench they played like this is the number one team in in ontario play and they played they played amazing and it was just like i have a picture from that game and it's just like one of the most amazing days of my life yeah and your dad

it's interesting you bring up your dad because guys so so uh craig's got a dad that's like a man's man and craig's dad had a mustache for 40 years oh my gosh and so you know you get teams involved by the way craig customizes these sweaters every year for whoever on his team raised the most money so every year it's a different character based on what their mustache is what it looks like which i think is awesome but one year you decide to bet your father that he will have to shave his mustache if you reach a certain goal and what did he what was it yeah so i think the first year was we were all in like four or five guys on the team movember's really fresh and i think raised like 500 so next time like what are we gonna do right so went up to

dad and i said you know what do we got to get to uh to get you to shave your mustache so reverse reverse uh fundraising he's like uh two thousand dollars craig so i'm like all right we gotta go so i just started emailing everyone through the business that knew him and yeah like i said i think he had it since he was 18 and at this point we're like 60 so never seen him without it and uh so yeah we absolutely absolutely crushed the mustache was older than me yeah okay yeah yeah so absolutely crush it we go over we shave his mustache i think i actually put some in a bag i don't know why i don't know why that was a good idea but was it a shock to see him it's insane yeah right so he had he was a hockey player tough as nails he took a slap shot to the face shattered

his nose and broke his orbital bone comes back like a couple weeks later takes a high stick knocks his front teeth out cuts his lip so reason he had the mustache is because he got a big scar under there right oh but so he shaves it off uh looks amazing and uh my mom sees it she's like oh todd you look so much younger never back again never back he grew he grew the next year to be on the team and it like forgot how to grow it looked like uh steel wool and like it lasted like a week he's like nope all done i love it i love now uh you know obviously movember affects uh families and helps men in many different ways it's not just testicular cancer it's mental health uh and other men's health causes that sometimes kind of go ignored and and and usually ignored by men right

because we have that there's that meme on the internet it's like you know uh uh uh being um stubborn could kill you and then somebody writes no it won't uh right and i think i think it's it's sort of something where men have an issue being vulnerable a lot of the time right which is which is cool now i want to make steve vulnerable oh because you brought something that will make him extremely vulnerable and i need you to explain this because i i love i love that you did this all right so yeah we uh i've been just watching as much as i can reading the books catching up on the podcast um i'm at the rink a lot so i haven't got to do a lot of research but one thing that resonated with me was goalies so growing up my brother was a goalie um i remember

me and my buddy uh mike hughes would sit in class and draw did you draw goalies i used to draw uh goalies and professional wrestlers oh so did mike so anyway if you were to draw a goalie pad in like the early 90s you had to draw the one long one yes side and then you had to go the four laterals yeah right like bond right yeah now the pads just look like pillows yes yeah so you go like waffle yeah so your favorite player was felix podfin okay also mine my future wife that i didn't know she was 30 minutes away doing the same thing i was um so i remember probably the greatest uh leaf memory was felix potvin skating down the ice for hex doll yes right hundred percent so i'm sitting there and we're watching like oh my god he's going that's hex doll down there oh my god

and you're kind of like this you're like holy crap he's winning he's winning he's winning so i was a younger brother of three we collected hockey cards and my middle brother he's in engineering is very smart he would always say hey craig i got this jocelyn tebow yeah remember him yeah sweet helmet though nordiques it was a sweet can i trade you for a felix pauffin so this went on for about five years oh so i brought you my friend look at this 1990 91 this is wow old us but uh to kids these days that's like the 70s yeah i love the old jets low can you remember where these stickers come from these uh the stickers were they in packs of cards someone will probably post it they might were they in this remember the old sticker books where like

you had to collect all the stickers and put them in a book yeah yeah yeah yeah all right buddy open this up oh boy so you can't have these because brett will kill me wow oh my god you can tell they're old by it we should change the cases how sundyed aces are you got a felix pop van rookie card like i i swear look at that good he's got a good mullet in that he had such a good mullet yeah so the best that i have a constant debate with myself i don't even need friends like uh of what podvin's best setup was it might be this one the uh the coho with like the jagged edges on it the jagged edges on it that might be the best version of his mask that might be the best leaf that was like the best start of the season like what kind of gear is felix gonna have

yeah and oh like i'd never did you do you have any of those uh let me see i have this one the pot vin uh 95 96 fleer ultra show the camera sorry no no no this is the conversation between me and fred all right yeah there we go there we go the i i had like a full set of the 95 96 fleer ultra yes might have had this one i've never seen this one of this full blue setup no i changed my mind this one's the best this is the best version of his mask 100 um yeah that one i that might have been the year he went to the all-star game dude i'm a historian about this guy the the one with the flag in the background his old rookie mask where i don't remember it at all either my first game leafs game was uh february 5th 1994 so he would have been a couple seasons in yeah um and

he would have ditched that mask long before then never seen this one with the mountain of pucks never are you sure you got to bring this home are you no i think i'm just you ever go to the something they called back in the day a book fair at your school oh yeah that's where i got that do you know the poster in the line of fire no way i still have it no way it's in the blue my wife yeah i still have it the line of fire i kept it from the time i was five years old um i brought how dare you first of all jesse no i'm saying that's crazy that you still have it i still have it it's in terrible condition but i still have it um and when my wife and i first moved into our house in uh 2014 i had nowhere to put it oh the first day we lived in that house we had a gas

leak in the in the laundry room where the where the furnace was so we got it fixed but like as a bit of dark humor i put that poster up uh on the laundry room door in the line of fire nice and now that the the blue room's a little bigger in our new place um yeah it's still like it's a focal point in the amazing i'm 36 this is that poster's over 30 years old and you know what and this is the thing like the reason i i i think i'm so glad craig that you brought these because it's like this is what men will bond over yes but we won't talk about our health issues or our feelings so right and and so and and that that is kind of that's what november's trying to do break down some of the barriers raise money for great causes and wear ridiculous mustaches which i think you
