Starting point is 00:00:00 i have two serious questions to kick off the show two serious questions boxers purple okay first one is um uh will the habs ever win again uh no sabers 82 and 0 that was gonna be my question will the sabers ever lose again it's impossible it's it can't they can't lose now they've already got three it's it's so good like they're not they're they're clearly to me i think they're gonna have a good season i do this is interesting i like this like a positive season not apocalyptic no exactly they could still win like i don't know 20 games like but there's there's just it's hard to have an apocalyptic season that's a great word adam it's hard to have that when you start so well you see them on the ice they're smiling
Starting point is 00:01:02 they're happy they're having a great time the habs they look how i assumed they felt man did you see the we'll get into the habs did you see the jeff petrie post game no oh my god first off that mustache has got to go it's terrible second really oh the mustache looks i didn't even know who it was i was like who is this who is this man he doesn't who is that's the thing it needs to be the handlebar it's just it goes to the end of the lip i was he looks he looks like an influencer for like pilsner yeah well that's a really good point but he he was saying and you could see it on his face he's just like you know two games and sorry four games and half of them have just been no effort like um like that i i can't imagine how
Starting point is 00:01:48 that's playing with the montreal media today especially the french side but it's it's two games over and like brendan gallagher got out there i gotta give him full respect and he's like you know this is just you know these are hard to get out of but we have to you know we have to push through and we've done it before we'll do it again like real jack petrie's like fuck this shit and it's four games in man well and it's the way they're losing that's what i'm saying it's not that they're losing it's how they're losing getting caved in and caved in early right we we're getting on the leash for not starting on time holy shit these guys are down three nothing in after like 10 minutes or whatever allowing goals on the first shot not having a good time
Starting point is 00:02:24 i uh uh i i gotta say this um uh sorry before you say that i think we should take five minutes and analyze jeff petrie's mustache what do we think about a gentleman like it's terrible what are our thoughts he looks like he's like he's not jeff petrie now he's that you can't be scary with a mustache like that no he looks he looks like uh ted lasso season 12 he looks like the kid who's who who bullied bullied you and has to come into the school his dad has come into the school now to be you know what i mean yes and he's like i'm really disappointed and you're like you taught him this and while you're explaining what his son did all you hear from his side of the room, I taught him to be tougher than this.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Anyway, he's got the cigarette-dyed fingers. Yeah. You ever see the yellow fingers? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Just darting. Yeah, but he's also the hockey coach.
Starting point is 00:03:21 His eyes look so sunken, too. He's just fed up. He's fed up with the shit. And you know, honestly. I get it. Jeff, I've been there. I get it. I've seen those days.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Yeah, you play in the NHL. I cheer for a team. You know how we're the same? Game Over Montreal had a really good conversation about this about, I don't know, like five minutes into the show. And a shout out to Shereen Ahmed and Mitch Burke, who joined Andrew Berkshire yesterday. Mitch Brown. Mitch Brown, excuse me. Mitch Brown.
Starting point is 00:03:48 And man, I have to be, this is a story I had not heard, but I guess Andrew had spoken to, after the Subban-Weber trade, Andrew spoke to somebody in the Preds organization. and that person in the preds organization said with the injury shea weber already has and we have to remember this five years ago yeah his career will end soon that's what the preds thought at the time now what andrew said and i think this is the important part and then i'm gonna let you jump in is that he said mark bergevin got probably two or three more years out of weber than he should have and he had five total years to replace him and what they did instead was by a bunch of stay-at-home defensemen on manageable contracts and jeff petrie and it's it's now it's really a great contract a great contract no there's nothing wrong with you but
Starting point is 00:04:39 it's just jeff petrie who can break things out and make a transition whatever and they build alex romanoff as this guy who was going to jump in remember the fucking hype around alex romanoff do you remember he's going to be a second pair defense first pair defenseman right away remember us talking about where the hell that hype came from though because i was like oh yeah he's going be this offensive dynamo or whatever i'm like he has no goals like and we were looking at his khl numbers i'm like he he can't score what are you talking about maybe i mean you know different skill sets translate differently differently from so he could be one of those guys who doesn't do anything in the k comes over and all of a sudden he's like 12 goal from your blue line guy
Starting point is 00:05:17 no the only caveat with romanov is that he's 21 years old right he has plenty of time to get good at the nhl level i think what they were saying though was that he was in the khl at 18 and so there's certain things that's huge yeah it's huge as a defenseman too that's really different i'm not taking away from that i know it's great to be in the nhl at 18 as well but but what can happen is certain parts of your game don't develop properly well and it's not helpful when you're a healthy scratch to me i don't look at their defense as the problem i uh i mean their defense has to do too much because they can't score team can't score well they can't score because they can't transition well and how big of a part of uh their game was philip to know with regards to that
Starting point is 00:06:01 right like the early season storylines are always easy to make so anzi kopitar shooting the lights out well he had like five points in two games well because he doesn't have to that's a silky guy and he doesn't have to worry about the defensive end of the puck because that's what they got philip to know for and blah blah blah but now how hard are nick suzuki and christian Dvorak's job without Philip Deneau. Deneau is the perfect guy to insulate a guy like Suzuki. Now, who scores?
Starting point is 00:06:30 Who scores? Like, who puts any of that young talent, Suzuki or Caulfield, who puts them in a position to score? It's a good question. It's a shorter list than most teams have. It's not a good spot for the Habs to be in. Yeah, and I mean, I think Caulfield was
Starting point is 00:06:46 probably better yesterday, but I mean, that's a lot of pressure to put on a guy who's played you know before the season 10 total regular season games not not to uh you know completely pump uh another show's tires but if the habs are really bad this year game over montreal is going to be fantastic yeah it is i jumped into the chat to be like listen you can build a career off of your team being shit let's take it from me well the way they're looking right now and you know the fact that mark bergevin still hasn't signed an extension lame dunk general manager at this point yeah that was interesting uh coach that's i i keep saying it guys questionable how do you
Starting point is 00:07:24 not call a timeout in the first period after what happened how do you not stop stop shit and just go okay guys we're really young team things are going a little bit wacky right now let's all take 30 seconds and calm down they're really young they're also coming off a stanley cup final they sorry haven't they scored like three goals this year it's not good three goals it's not good they they got shut out um i mean it was good to see mike hoffman take a bomb from the point I think they're going to slot him in as Shea Weber's sort of, you know, that's their power play, right? But this is what I was talking about with the Sabres to get back to that.
Starting point is 00:07:57 You look at the Habs on paper, you look at the Sabres. I know which one I'd rather have, but no expectations, 3-0. What's the mood in that room like? Coming off of three games away from the Stanley Cup, 0-4. You see the enormous difference, And there's other emotional burdens that the Habs are carrying. Like, they're without their captain for we don't know how long, probably the whole season.
Starting point is 00:08:26 They're without their starting goalie and kind of sort of captain. I thought that's who you were referring to as the captain. Yeah. No, no, no. Frankly, yeah. You're right. And I kind of wonder if that hit them even harder because, I mean, Shea Weber, they've had months to prepare for that.
Starting point is 00:08:42 There's David Savard. That's cool. like i don't think it's a problem with jake allen i think the team likes jake allen they're comfortable playing in front of them his numbers were fine but the habs have been through they've had a really emotional few months another oh and four in montreal which is a bad place to be oh and four and it's uh it's ors it's overreaction season the first 10 games that'll have a huge effect on how you look at the rest of your 72 games you know so i wonder i wonder if bergevin's just like okay hands up i'm out at the end of the year if this doesn't go well because i i'm him i i cap it
Starting point is 00:09:19 off it's like hey i took this this franchise to the stanley cup finals i've had my time here the market is is too intense for this i don't i'm good maybe i'll go confirm the rumors and head down to la like uh people were speculating this week uh i know they talked about on the cj show and i don't see how bergevin comes back i don't think he gets fired because do you want to kickstart the next guy's tenure during this run maybe you just let bergevin play it out and then you maybe let him go at the end of the season but he's definitely not coming back next year what a strange relationship i do not understand his relationship with jeff molson oh he's never gonna be gone he's gone immediately like i he he can do no wrong who is this fucking asshole who
Starting point is 00:10:01 took us to the san lincoln final and hasn't done shit about it what like i all this uh oh yeah he's no he's gone he's going to la i think to me this dropped out of the sky what what what bergevin going to la he's a hab forever until this week when everyone said he's going to la and i'd never heard a bloody thing and i thought like aren't rob blake and luke robotai doing just fine apparently his relationship with robotai is great so that's why he might bring him down there okay he would go to la as an assistant gm i don't know i don't know what the rule would uh what the role would be but i think we also forget like how old some of these guys are like maybe he doesn't want to be a gm anymore because it's really hard and how much money is enough you know what i mean
Starting point is 00:10:44 yeah i think if if he if he'd want sorry jesse if he wanted to sign the extension i believe it would have been done i think jeff molson said what do you want you got to move on at some point it's it is hilarious to me though we could have said that in 2014 though i know i i do think it's hilarious that i keep saying the most secure job in canada is nhl general manager and he's just gonna leave he's gonna he's gonna he's not even gonna get fired it's the most secure job ever it's the most secure job ever how do you get fired how do you get fired what could i possibly do you know i'm gonna say something that's unpopular but it's been bugging me for a while oh god and i think that given the investigations that have gone on with the chicago blackhawks
Starting point is 00:11:37 i think that maybe i i have this sneaking suspicion it's just what i feel all of those guys to me are probably going to lose their jobs anyway all of them eh at some point i mean and and listen shovel day off quinville bergevans bowman that's why i so to piggyback on that that's why i don't think molson kind of handed out the blank he didn't say there's a blank check because maybe he knows that after the my you stuff happened after what's going on in chicago that bergman's probably just it's time for you to go you know maybe he did he doesn't seem to get where the world's going and if logan mayu is not a perfect example of that i don't know what is and i i think uh i i you know and again you know i know this is supposed to be an escape
Starting point is 00:12:22 or whatever but i definitely feel like maybe he just wants to you know because because to here's how here's how you'd look at it and this is a very gross way to look at it well i stepped down i didn't get fired all these allegations came out but i still didn't get fired and that matters to people believe it or not interesting so it's just a thought it's it's an interesting thought and one that we should keep an eye on but i i think it's a little early a little premature i'm interested in the blackhawks themselves certainly who are struggling to start the season and everyone's talking about oh how was this acquisition working or that acquisition and i'm like so we all just forgot huh like we're so they're just literally this is going to continue well i think stan you
Starting point is 00:13:03 shouldn't be the gm of the olympic team uh what if i just was okay bye yeah he just is i think i think what it is with the blackhawks is like you do you can pay attention to the team you can break down what's happening with the team of course um see that giveaway oh you shouldn't anyway I don't want to make it about that too much but I did want to say I think that might be playing into this and I think Jesse maybe you're right maybe Molson's like hmm
Starting point is 00:13:31 I think the Mayu situation that happened there in June I think it played a lot bigger than we think it did within the structure of the front office within the Habs organization because that's such a it was such an oversight and it went
Starting point is 00:13:48 to the top you know it led to the owner having to make a statement about it by all well and no heads have rolled for it we always talk about dart boards and that is a general manager creating work for his owner yes that is the opposite of what a general manager is there to do you're you're there to make the owner's life easier more than you're there to win yeah yeah like bosses don't like employees that are always the just getting making them do work you hire someone so that you can do less stuff yes so they can do their job and you don't have to think about it yeah yeah and you wouldn't believe how many owners are right in the room on transactions throughout the league all the time you know let
Starting point is 00:14:28 you sometimes you probably ask yourself and and the more we get closer to hockey because when we started this show we were completely on the outside no connections as the show has grown we start you start to get to know people who who know things and you just would be completely blown away i think by how many owners are actually in the room or at least on the phone going i want this player and the jam going no and the owner goes no this is what we're doing like we were all we were all in such a brain fog i i think like at the end of july i know i was um but the the stuff from that draft was so explosive i'm trying to oh what the hell is his name trevor timmons do you remember the trevor timmons clip where where they're like hey so like why'd you pick
Starting point is 00:15:12 this guy or whatever and he just sat there in silence for 20 seconds we all forgot about that clip that was wild fucking yeah that was crazy and then he sat there 20 seconds answer was like well what do you mean by that question what do you mean well i don't know you just had 20 seconds to think about what i might mean by that question how do i turn this back on him is what the 20 seconds were spent doing and then he did and then he cut him off and was really rude about it and like i i get it you're you're not obligated to be polite or whatever but uh yeah i feel like they had an off season for the ages and not in a good way and uh i think every year there's a wacky team i don't know if wacky is the right word but there's a team where they're
Starting point is 00:16:05 there's a news item with them every bloody week early signs or early indications as it's the hat with the habs this summer it was the three big pillars of their news were my you yep then carrie price almost goes in the expanse and draft right then the offer street it was three months of an off season it was a condensed off season all three months the habs led the headlines yeah that's a good point and like i'm sure berger van is just over it yeah man yeah at some point you mentally tap out yep like you you go what do they say enough an executive in any business the the most punch that they can deliver is within the first five years, and after that, it kind of
Starting point is 00:16:46 wanes, and that's why you see executives moving on every quarter, or sorry, half decade. It's easy for us to go, how could you make that decision? Well, fine. Do you want the job? No. No. You can give me, yeah, Steve, we'll give you $10 million a year to run the Toronto Maple Leafs. Absolutely not. I'd take the $10 million. No. No. I'll go back
Starting point is 00:17:02 and work at the zoo before I do that. Steve, you would 100% take that. No. You wouldn't take that? You wouldn't want to run the Toronto Maple Leafs. That's more than Dubas and Shanahan make combined. People already think I'm an idiot. Imagine if I take that job. I don't care. Steve, you would take a lot less than that to run the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Starting point is 00:17:18 To run the Leafs? What is wrong with you? Get out of here. Stop lying to us. Steve, here's 40 grand, but you get to be GM of the Leafs. Okay. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:28 You get a free mattress. Who are their other sponsors? Carlton Bear comes to your house, makes you breakfast. Yeah, that'd be sick. Right? Big hug. Leo's personal friend, Carlton the Bear. and every time i feel bad about people insulting me in the media
Starting point is 00:17:42 is carlton the bear comes over and he gives me a big bear hug what would your office look like uh would it be i think you've all seen it would it be as beautiful as dubious what depends what do you think of my blue room would you hang a fucking picture or something i don't know put an air freshener down maybe get a plant no i'd put up all the all the figurines and my felix potvin mask listen kyle if you listen i would love to come in and redesign your office i would love to look at the great job we did with the studio yeah look at this team can do with the mostly fake brick and the and the very real brick and the soundproof foam with the gaps in it that we leave up to annoy you just to fuck with you you can barely notice it jesse
Starting point is 00:18:27 there are people that comment on that very funny very very funny okay so um i i don't know if you guys realize this or not but in his first three games conor mcdavid has nine points and he is on i know it's stupid so i didn't know that that's why it's very funny right it's because he's played calgary twice and he eats them he eats calgary alive he's he's like doesn't he yeah who's oh man there's mcdavid's kryptonite um david uh felsberg sent me this uh david thank you so much sorry eight points in three games my problem oh what a bum um he is on pace for 218 points in the season. That would break Wayne Gretzky's
Starting point is 00:19:08 215 point record in 85-86. Yeah, I don't think it's going to sustain, but God, that's funny. Crazy, huh? Just unbelievable. And the thing is, no one's talking about that. Everybody's talking about, and I guess rightly so, Leon Dreisaitl getting his 200th last
Starting point is 00:19:23 night, which was cool too. Pointer goal. Goal. And McDavid has 199. So, Leon Dreisaitl is top five oilers all time and quickest 200 goals wow and so he's number five mcdavid will surpass him probably whenever the oilers play next right because he's played 74 less games and he's a goal away from 200 that's unbelievable isn't that crazy that's the the thing about dry side and like
Starting point is 00:19:52 dude elite talent in this league of course but um there's a little bit of the you know is ringo star the best drummer in the world he's not even the best drummer in the beatles is leon dry saddle the best goal scorer on the oilers or fuck it i fucked it up i fucked it up no steve is is he the best goal scorer in the league he's not even the best goal scorer on the oilers right it's uh it's connor mcdavid he's a list of one in the world though like it's not a slight against leon dry saddle it's just what what could he possibly do to ever live up to that standard i like the edmonds in oilers this season simply because of the dave tippett quote we got uh which was what speaking of dry sidle when they won the game in ot on a dry sidle pass and they asked tippett afterwards
Starting point is 00:20:41 about it and then his quote was uh they asked him hey what a pass by dry settle a coach and he said he threw a lot of backhands tonight some to our team some to the other team the problem is when that happens in the playoffs that usually goes against you and that's the problem i have with it wow so shout out for like thinking of playoffs today i like that and not letting these old oilers just run around and play fire wagon hockey and expect them to be competitive so they continue to do that but that was their downfall versus winnipeg and they like they and you know what he's right i mean if you look at how they won last night right they they won six to five but that they are that's how they're gonna win game but it was against the ducks they let the
Starting point is 00:21:26 ducks score five and i know mike smith went down and the ducks have been good two and one yeah they have the first loss i know i know you're right okay fair fair did they mean people are talking about the ducks as buyers that was in 32 thoughts already yeah god people are we there really ors it's overreaction season because a two and one start for the ducks shouldn't necessarily be they're all hey they're buyers i don't know if i ever mentioned this in the duck season preview video they are the blueprint of the type of team that screws you in your early season predictions they're a team with a goalie and a bunch of young rookies damn it that's the mystery box that's the overachieving mystery box and we all missed it anyway congrats to
Starting point is 00:22:07 trevor ziegers on his calder i know dom always talks about that in his uh computer models that when you have rookies or guys from other leagues around the world there's a gap because the computer doesn't know what they're going to do in the nhl level so you get that over um over achieving team when you have the bunch of rookies and the young guys it's interesting it's it's fun to watch it's been a fun start to the season um i love this by the way don't speaking of dom this tweet from three hours ago after starting the season three and oh the buffalo savers playoff odds have moved up from 0.4 percent to 1.1 percent listen and then nearly tripled after starting the season oh and four montreal's playoff chances have dropped from 38 to 10 oh that's not great
Starting point is 00:22:48 not great um anyways the oilers uh love what they're doing to start the season yeah good for though they're they're fun they're oiler and they're well they are what you said they would need to be in the season preview which is just score score score shitload of goals they too many teams try to get better by being what they aren't and the oilers are trying to get better by being more of what they are which is a team that can't really defend but they score a shitload of goals i'm annoyed by how much oilers twitter like zach hyman let us mourn let us be sick yeah but You didn't get him for the eighth year, Shelbyville, with your turnip juice and your freaking sixth-round pick
Starting point is 00:23:26 that you got to hold on to. I hate it. I hate how... I don't hate it because I love Zach, and I want him to succeed. I hope this year they find a way to translate this play to the playoffs because for the last three seasons, they haven't been able to do it. So I hope this year it kind of works. It depends who you ask because if you look at the numbers
Starting point is 00:23:45 from that series against Winnipeg, Winnipeg swept them, but they got dominated four straight times wasn't it like three overtime games uh two maybe it was definitely two and the the fourth and deciding game i think went to triple ot or something like that and it really did end with a fart like and if mcdavid gets a couple power plays like if any penalty is called on him who knows if they're in the second round yeah maybe maybe it you know it would be great for a team like the oilers to to succeed in the playoffs just for the fact that it would be nice to have somebody other than um you know a team that literally just grinds your bones win and and i mean like i know the oilers of the 80s were had a tough element but that team
Starting point is 00:24:34 just scored piles of goals let's be let's be clear on that grant fuhrer six cups and all was not like there were people who who will make the argument he shouldn't be in the hall of fame i think that's crap no but it's not like he was he wasn't patrick waugh he wasn't ken dryden he wasn't you know what i mean and and the oilers were were good but they weren't like nobody looks at the 80s oilers and be like ah defensive stalwarts no shut you right down i i think that you know they they won games because they had wayne fucking gretzky and yari curry and then mark massey on his second line paul coffee yeah like paul coffee scored 150 points as a defenseman Yeah, go through the list.
Starting point is 00:25:13 So I would love it if the NHL would allow for and officiate for a team like the Oilers that is all skill and all fun. Because wouldn't it be great to start seeing like seven, six playoff games? How exciting would that be? Did you see the overtime last night with Minnesota? No, I was too mad.
Starting point is 00:25:32 I was too mad. Were you too mad? The Jets in wild. I have Vasilevsky and Hellebuck on my fantasy team and I'm getting screwed. and what i hate about that is i'm losing but more more so that jesse was right my goalie strategy sucks and dude did you see what led to the overtime shifley scores on an empty net and it's offside yeah kyle connor two feet over the uh yeah i didn't see that wow yeah so the the they
Starting point is 00:26:03 have a face off goes the other way and they tie it and then blow it and then yeah the fans actually were leaving and then once the goal was called back they all came back to their seats in minnesota and it was crazy it was like like you know you get it's literally remember nhl 2012 where uh you would just pass it across and that and then went to the other player and it would be in that was it it's literally caprizoff through the defenseman skates to uh i think it was uh eric sinek or uh yeah he had the hat trick yeah it's just crazy imagine how upset i was with hellebuck and shifley on my team i missed out on the shifley goal points the win points damn it you got to spend your draft capital on guys who are so far ahead of the next positions in the in this in the
Starting point is 00:26:49 score stat that you want so like a mcdavid is worth anything you pay for him because he's gonna triple the third place guy so you're getting like five different guys in one guy so you don't want to spend it all on goalies where you can just pick up goalies on the waivers and just yeah yeah you know my my thought was like i agree with that thinking but my thought was okay but if there's two guys it's these two vasilevsky and hellebuck the jets are on the way up the lightning are the friggin lightning i'm safe and i think between them they've had i think four six goal games and that that's all gonna turn around we're a week into the nhl no overreaction season rules let's not no and i got kyle peterson chilling on the bench and i'm like no no no
Starting point is 00:27:36 this is all about jock peterson did you draft him no i didn't or jeff peterson jake peterson um by the way uh shout out to julian mckenzie who actually texted me you could tell he was listening at that moment because he's like the the you're looking for hendrix lapierre and then and then we got we figured it out eventually we figured out the name tweets like that yeah but yeah you got me texted like the name you were looking for is hendrix lapierre i was like okay all right i said that segment was a mess he's like it's okay i really enjoyed it anyway i'm like thank you julian yeah well i enjoy your show too julian so how about that sorry it's called canadian anger um it's too long though what is okay can
Starting point is 00:28:18 we talk about that i don't think that's a topic on our show it's a topic is the length of another show people are mad at me because julian and chris keep talking about well we keep telling adam we're gonna do half an hour and then we don't the reason i wanted them to do a half an hour show are you ready for this is because it's chris johnston and julian mckenzie chris who has three jobs he's got the star he's got us and he's got tsn chris has three jobs julian is on 48 podcasts and also works sometimes at tsn radio and sometimes at sports net tv figure that one out i don't know i think he's the only one in the country who can work at both networks at the same damn time and ours and ours and i just and i'm like you guys are gonna burn yourselves out you're gonna be
Starting point is 00:29:01 exhausted nope what if we did so that was the only reason it was because i cared about them give the people what they want more more it's a it's a very good show no i'm never listening and go this feels long i well that is true but i guess i'm just thinking like here's what i'm thinking it's the beginning of the season you know when you're at you guys ever do cross-country you're running i know what you're about to say you don't sprint at the beginning you sprint at the end oh that's why i always lost and so you you you don't want to be the like and i was just thinking like like you guys are gonna it's it's it's not even february yet and february is where it gets hard yeah but chris is a distinguished 40 year old man who can make his own choices i know
Starting point is 00:29:42 happy birthday chris oh yeah it was his birthday over the weekend happy birthday chris man i can't believe that guy is 40 now come on uh yeah but he doesn't look a day over adorable all right that's true he's a man he's 40 two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Starting point is 00:30:34 Siaya and I live in Ice Cove. I've made some questionable decisions that didn't end up the way i planned and today i'm still figuring it out somehow things usually get worse before they get better apparently that's how i roll so bundle up and come along for the bumpy ride don't miss the new season of north of north starting september 8th on cbc gem um okay let's talk about evander kane 21 game suspension for using a fake vaccination uh vaccination card will be the sole penalty according to elliot friedman and 32 thoughts no further punishment uh and they obviously they've investigated the gambling and they've investigated um the spousal abuse alleged could not substantiate either doesn't mean he's uh guilty or innocent it just means
Starting point is 00:31:20 could not substantiate but what's interesting here is well there's so many things going on obviously there's the enormous debt that he has taken out against his um against his contract so remember he took a lien against his contract for big for gambling and he owes that money beyond that um he's lost 1.3 million dollars because he's not eligible to return until november 30th so because he did this fake vaccination card um he will lose 1.3 million bucks for a fake piece of paper can you imagine i i don't know that the things that i would do for 1.3 million dollars are are they're bad would you host a podcast i'm well i would would you i'd have to do i'd have to be 18 i'd have to host 18 podcasts minimum
Starting point is 00:32:07 but uh you know the thing is um i i i gotta ask we heard the rumors this summer about how the team doesn't seem to like them like the players have asked the gm please do not let him back to camp they can't trade that contract and even you know he's a valuable player on the ice but there's suspicion about the gambling thing about him betting on games and there's suspicion about there's alleged abuse right and then and then you've got this this this debt thing that he has to deal with and what's frustrating is that he he said like three weeks ago about something else who are you going to trust gary betman or me and it's like man i remember going to bat for him and going like if this guy has a gambling problem like get him get him some help but at this point
Starting point is 00:32:58 like what what do you even say yeah adam you said okay so so let's give him a clean slate let's let's wipe it all clean let's forget everything we know about evander kane everything that's ever been alleged all right yep so we're gonna forget allegations all right extract those we forget the we forget all that baggage we forget the the stuff with the winnipeg jets and you know we even lump it on the jets oh they were bullying him that was that was his fault and and the and the money phone and no that was just him having fun leave him alone and we forget about him taking a helicopter to a jay's game when he was on the sabers do you remember that and i forgot that yeah yeah but that's just fun it's just fun he's just going to a jay's game
Starting point is 00:33:38 he's this young millionaire why not why not go to the jay's game so we we forget about all of that um we know that he he i think he either cheated or got into a fight with his girlfriend and then bought her a billboard on on the sunset strip to apologize we gotta forget that happened okay so no we're gonna forget that that happened happened we're gonna we're gonna forget all of it okay um the the the gambling uh allegations betting on his own games and there's a long list and even adam who i thought like god you were in the middle of saying it and i'm like this is so poignant and i haven't heard anybody say it like addiction is addiction right so if he needs help he needs help so we're gonna forget all those things we're gonna pretend they never happened
Starting point is 00:34:23 okay and i'm saying this genuinely yeah so you know pretend his name's not even evander kane it's some player new to the league you've never heard of you bring a fake vaccine passport what are you fucking stupid he's a non-option to return to the national hockey league no team in hockey can employ this person stupid that's a really genuinely stupid dangerous selfish thing to do what the fuck are you thinking and if you're someone and if you're listening to this because his name's in it if you're someone in his life and you're enabling this stupid shit maybe even egging it on maybe even encouraging it what did what did he come up with this stupid fucking idea or was it you
Starting point is 00:35:17 you're ruining this person you're ruining a life's worth of hard work a fake vaccine passport a league with 800 players you thought you were going to be the one to get away with it fucking stupid i have more respect for the guys who at least come out and say i'm I'm not getting it. Yes. Yeah. Yes. And how often are you going to hear me say that?
Starting point is 00:35:43 What are you fucking stupid? And if any other player gets caught with it, what are you fucking stupid? It's not even a him thing. What a genuinely stupid fucking thing to do. And I have done stupid fucking things. That is a stupid fucking thing. And it costs you $1.3 million.
Starting point is 00:36:04 Piece of paper. For a piece of paper. remember we're forgetting every other thing we're forgetting that that money could be going towards this or that or that we're forgetting every other thing imagine if in your life you lost 1.3 million dollars because you're fucking stupid sorry guys i don't really have anywhere else to go with that i think it was i think you hit the nail on the head that's enough that's enough it's embarrassing for an adult person to do that like do you not do you not just sit there and be like oh this is this is gross and embarrassing
Starting point is 00:36:40 that you would even try this what are you 18 and trying to get away trying to trick your teacher well and and who's the person that did up the microsoft word document and tried to do you know what i mean like who's that guy what kind of what kind of place are you in some other i don't know huckster who just latched on latched on and scams money out of people and i mean there's no shortage of people like that oh yeah you see it around the nhl all the time who they see they see a mark right they they see a vulnerable target and a guy like him and they're like that's mine that's that's a meal right there and they get it done and they get it done and they move on to the next one they're not going to lose 1.3 million dollars i do have sympathy for this person like i do
Starting point is 00:37:24 because i hate seeing anyone suffer i hate seeing anyone ruin what they've built but at what point are we done with this alleged adult that's enough that's enough all all the all the things that we've uh that we said we forgot well now let's live in a world that is this world where we can't forget any of them and you did this stupid fucking thing that's enough he can't play another game in the national hockey league ever again for anybody that's a guy who could really use that money at this point in his life well who couldn't use 1.3 million well he can use it especially because his debts amount to much more than that yeah yeah well and that's the thing right is that like you could you might make
Starting point is 00:38:09 50 or 60 million dollars throughout your career but if you owe 20 million you have spent 70 million or 80 million and you you he is less rich than anyone listening to the show hey i got one why is it only 21 games i i think i there must be some rule with that i assume it's cpa i hope so cpa there has to be probably it's probably written down somewhere where this is max this is the fine for doing this thing also we didn't even talk about like the medical implications of doing that you're walking around as a vaccinated person but you're not really so you're skipping all the protocols that you should be taking uh if you're not vaccinated that's that's unforgivable like should be doing that to other people it's something an asshole would do you want to play with an
Starting point is 00:38:58 asshole you want to pass the puck to an asshole you want to coach an asshole you want to manage an asshole you you want to sign paychecks for an asshole phrase you want to play with an asshole all right didn't mean to i didn't as it came out of my mouth i okay i'm just gonna occasionally sometimes i mean yeah we don't we don't judge you i'm not again it yeah okay are you for it or again i'm for it they're like the sharks sound done with them with his ass and the rest of his body the sharks are done with the asshole and the fins I'm gonna do
Starting point is 00:39:44 what I did a few minutes ago and forget that I even said that please somebody clip that no me staring Jesse in his eyes you wanna play with an asshole I was looking down because I was trying to see if there was anything in 32 thoughts
Starting point is 00:40:01 about this being a CBA thing and it doesn't look like there is CJ had something about so they can't terminate his contract. Yeah, the NHL and NJPA won't allow that. Okay, fine. He doesn't have to play for you ever again. The team
Starting point is 00:40:18 does not want him. Every other team he has had previously does not want him. We'll see. When are we done? When are we done? I assume Evander Kane is on the ice in late November. That's just my guess.
Starting point is 00:40:34 You think so, right? Maybe he gets it right this time. How many times have we been down this road? Ah, hockey player does terrible thing. They'll never play again. Hockey player plays again. Plays again immediately. Hey, here's a million dollars.
Starting point is 00:40:47 Come play for the Hurricanes. Like, yeah, it's just... Don't be a fool about this. We know he's on the ice. No, I know, but I'm saying how I feel. The only one that I can remember that never played... Well, it's two. One of them got paid, which was Mike Richards.
Starting point is 00:41:01 I still don't know what happened there. The LA Kings will pay him forever and ever. Shady as hell. That is shady. and i would love to know i want to know what the fuck happened there i've that's always said what's the story so he had dean lombardi and this is in 2015 i think mike richards was a good player big part of their their two stanley cup runs oh yeah but he was like a fringe player and then he was caught at the border with something to do with prescription drugs where he wasn't supposed
Starting point is 00:41:26 to have them they weren't prescribed to him and the kings were in cap hell yeah and they tried to use that incident as a way to get out from under it from under it and it went to arbitration i believe and they pay him like a million dollars a year to like 2023 sorry 2030 or something it's forever if and and i don't know how it how they manage that and my question has always been and we know from from the now the jimmy hayes situation the derrick bugard situation did you see that report with rick westhead um i saw it i haven't had a chance so derrick bugard was taking a thousand painkillers a year wow and and uh and and jimmy jimmy obviously had um that stuff in in his system and my question with that whole situation why it seems so shady to me is where
Starting point is 00:42:18 do you get the pills we we saw robin lenders tweet and that's why i feel like that story went away because i think i know where he got the pills i don't know for sure but i couldn't i can guess where he got the pills that he was illegally taking across the border which he did not have a prescription for do you want me to read the wikipedia please yeah tell us yeah it's pretty uh it's like three sentences on june 29th 2015 king's general manager dean lombardi announced that the club had terminated richard's contract which had five years remaining for a material breach of his standard players contract. The termination resulted from an incident at the US-Canada border in which the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Richards for possession
Starting point is 00:42:58 of Oxycontin, a controlled substance without a prescription. Richards' 12-year $69 million which he had signed in 2008 while captain of the Philadelphia Flyers had $22 million remaining on it when it was terminated on august 10th it was announced that the nhlpa had filed a grievance on behalf of richards to contest the termination on october 9th the kings announced a settlement with richards thus making him a free agent end of story i don't think he ever played after that on flyers contract the wasn't capital capitals so he signed a one-year contract with the uh capitals and this came after richards was cleared by the league to sign an nhl contract and that's where his career ended there's something weird there right sketchy it's number one bullshit is it
Starting point is 00:43:50 number one bullshit that's the number one bullshit so this is the thing um i don't know how we got here pills and well so i there's nothing nothing to do with evander cane and pills but but at the end of the day here the the the situation is they i was just looking up his contract to see if he's biotable um and it looks like he has no bonuses so he is unless he's got an nmc which it's modified so i don't know oh there is bonuses there's no press there are bonuses yeah what's that there's no press box protection what's that mean just sit your ass down you're not playing right but i would imagine that the sharks would probably want to well i guess if you buy him out um he it counts against the cap but if you don't buy him out and you sit him you could put him on ltir but uh
Starting point is 00:44:45 you know what you can unless he's injured well i guess you could make the argument or you or you do the lula amorello where you have a conversation and then just jeffrey lupo was never heard from again um you know it's it's a until he was until he was for like a couple days i'm not ready they shut it down that is also number one bullshit i want to know that story too i have aggressively changed my mind but only for 48 hours and then somebody's gonna tell me to shut the hell up and go back to where i was and i'm gonna do it that's a thing that happened oh Yeah, and Nas' finger slipped, and that's why he clicked like on the comment. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:45:25 His finger slipped. You know how that happens sometimes? People think we forget. Yeah, man. Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out, like, what's the path forward here? Right. And I don't envy Doug Wilson, and I don't envy ownership, because I don't think that ownership is the type of ownership.
Starting point is 00:45:47 They've got good ownership there, but i don't think they're the type of ownership that's like you know what yeah sure let's just blow 30 million dollars out the door like he's not the first nhl player to do a stupid thing he's not the first nhl player to do 40 stupid things uh but i i'm wondering what the limit is here is there a how aren't we there where's the calculator buyout calculator let's say evander yeah sorry just to look it up it ain't happening i'm curious evander kane so the buyout cost would be the cap hit would be three million next to the next for the next one one one and all that has a 3.6 2.6 4.6 uh the post buyout earnings yeah so it would cost you significant against the cap
Starting point is 00:46:33 it would cost you the equivalent of a third line center which is a lot um and then you know his earnings would still be you know three two three two two two so he'd still make significant money but i mean obviously it wouldn't be enough to pay his debts and it's a mess it's a mess like we all having good good time well i can move us on but i just you know we do need to talk about it it's it's a it's a major major story and well we've been doing this podcast for a long time and adam when have you ever started a segment so here's a fun evander kane story never i remember enough one of the first segments we did was the money phone thing where he was in vegas and i was like why is everybody on him about this like this seems like a fun thing to do yeah that was yeah and this
Starting point is 00:47:15 is why by the way you complain about real things so that people don't tune you out when the real things happen because well yeah sure you're complaining about real thing but it's not a real thing because you complained about not a real thing before ah you're just dick complaining about his money phone shut up no you don't waste bullets on the money phone two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcf

Starting point is 00:48:58 to stay in the nhl he wants a fresh start he's a 2018 first rounder and i guess gerard galant's been calling him and saying like come on you should come back but beyond that ah come on beyond that you ever tried that uh i don't want to play for you anymore well players love gerard galant we know that but i'm just trying to figure out like i'm i've seen some brooksie columns come out that are a little bit harsh but brooksie can be that way um new york can be that new york can be that way for for sure so my question is is like is there smoke here already are we having another season of new york ranger hockey where this is this legitimately good team is going to have a pile of off ice distractions again
Starting point is 00:49:49 it's interesting i've because i've noticed it throughout the league the mood is still off like in the world like i i know that doesn't help the hockey conversation necessarily but people are mad and people have a lot less patience for anything that's why you know starting the season oh and four is bad uh going through what the rangers went through at the end of last season and building all this hope around your young promising prospects only to have one of them say i don't want to play for you anymore sorry two of them say i don't want to play for him for you anymore well how is a rangers fan supposed to have any patience for that yep similarly did you see the footage out of chicago what was this what was the footage tell us oh
Starting point is 00:50:36 baby um so they're announcing everybody i don't know if it was the home opener for the united center or whatever but they're they're announcing oh and here's this player and here's this assistant coach and that assistant coach and head coach jeremy colleton the whole building booed this guy really really bad and brian burke um didn't want to fire ron wilson many years ago but the way he described it is it would be nothing uh less than cruel and unusual torture to let him uh coach another game at the air canada center at the time and at what point is it going to be anything other than cruel and unusual torture to let jeremy colton continue to coach the chicago blackhawks those are two large grumpy fan bases right now at least the
Starting point is 00:51:30 rangers got some cookies hey panarin scored and it was an overtime we like both those things that's cool it was on the road but whatever it's cool and it's against the leafs and who doesn't love fucking dunking on the leafs right who doesn't love it is the second ranked trophy in hockey next to the stanley cup dunking on the leaf it's an easier one to win yes oh yeah it's way easier to win it gets passed around the league every year um just no one's got any bloody patience anymore it's been beaten out of people i misquoted it's rick uh carp and yellow uh uh uh that what i think was talking about about uh not brooksie not brooksie i don't think it was brooksie so i apologize for that um and blue shirt uh blue shirt blog was tweeting about
Starting point is 00:52:15 the fact that chris drury the rangers have a new york i have a chris drury problem this is interesting i know i think i think i i tried to send the warning signal you know from the raft when you fire into the sky when i i pointed out during our season previews that james dolan went rogue in may and fired jeff gordon and um i forgot his name john davidson uh randomly in may because he was upset because they they didn't handle situations correctly as james dolan wanted and he brought in his guy chris jury who was the ahl gm and then like the associate gm as well but that was clearly his guy and we don't know what to expect from drury we don't know that he's a good gm because he didn't build this rangers team that was looked on the precipice of something really
Starting point is 00:53:02 good and now it's been a couple months and we're seeing that hey he made a deal to to go get ryan reeves and that was his big big deal and the start to the season isn't that great and nothing happened versus the capitals did anybody notice that that there's zero anything from reeves and wilson like maybe you shouldn't have done that okay so here's interesting here's what here's what we got here from blue shirt blog i think this is important chris drury problem extends far beyond his management of kratsov and leah sanderson drury was at the center of both fallouts with top 10 picks at best drury is a poor personality as a manager however at worst what we are seeing uh What we were seeing with this play out is Drury appears to be just as whiny as Kravtsov.
Starting point is 00:53:47 This is someone in a senior leadership role berating prized assets in top 10 picks. Whiny and personal feelings should be out the door. Now, that is, you know, it is kind of now. Who wrote that? That would be. What is this thing you're reading? Dave. It literally just just did.
Starting point is 00:54:04 Yes, Dave made our show. Yo, this blog is Dave Shapiro. um and dave dave does not hold back but he's right in the sense here's what he's right about here's what he's right about he oh you know dave it's dave shapiro they didn't they don't link that properly on their thing um uh i guess okay so here's what happened according to arthur staples piece drury was at the center of the kravtsov drama he told kravtsov he quit on the team when he went back to russia despite kravtsov having an out clause and being a teenager then he publicly chastised him in the bubble in 2020
Starting point is 00:54:44 and then i guess there was a pretty rough exit interview because like you guys just said what did chris drury build well he was doing the ahl team and what do these two guys have in common they were ahl players and you know speaking of people who don't have patience russians you wrong me twice that's more than enough i'm fucking off back to russia you you figure your shit out you trade me go fuck yourself that's uh interesting i don't know what the translation of that is i don't either but it's interesting yeah um um what what i think this i don't know let's play a game called steve's overthinking um okay what what i often see with guys like james dolan or or at least there's a vibe with with james dolan coming off of the rangers i go sometimes i look
Starting point is 00:55:32 at these rich and powerful guys who feel like they've been wronged and i'm like were you ever actually bullied ever like in your life because listen i don't want anyone to be bullied but like i was bullied and you learned some life lessons from that and what what what this is a dangerous road no i know don't ask no no no he's he's acting like a guy who's never had to deal with it like oh the way they deal with it in the movies is they have a big dog and i'm gonna go out and get another big i'm gonna get an even bigger dog and that they just there's just no development there he's he is for lack for lack of a better term he handled the tom wilson situation like a child yes he handled it with someone who has a child's understanding of conflict resolution he handled
Starting point is 00:56:27 bit like the danbury trashers why do you say that tell me about it so your solution for getting back at tom wilson was to destroy the rangers the rangers revenge on tom wilson not even the capitals on tom wilson is implosion what why did you you don't stop being the rangers because you got beat up once you're going to the rangers are going to leapfrog the caps no problem in a few years or at least they were on pace to do it the sun will eventually set on the capitals and it will rise for the rangers and it will rise mightily it should they're going to look like how the capitals used to yep and the capitals got their teeth kicked in a little bit sure right how many losses to pittsburgh and all the losses to playoff and as a result they stopped being the capitals
Starting point is 00:57:22 they didn't right no they went out and they got they put Sean Thornton on Alex Ovechkin's wing and that's how they eventually overcame them no they were just better they were just better but no our way to being a better
Starting point is 00:57:38 hockey team is we're just going to throw fists at the problem that's not how this works James that's not how this works we haven't gotten there in the podcast yet but Monday night the Leafs they dominated the Rangers in every aspect of the entire game except for one damn goaltender.
Starting point is 00:57:55 Yeah, but who won? Do-do-do-do-do-do! Do-do-do-do-do-do! I'm just imagining him like a kid running around his office going, James Dolan champion! Carrying the James Dolan championship he made himself a belt that he wears
Starting point is 00:58:09 with him. Like, he's gay. Anyway, yes, Chester? Seeing the Leafs at full strength with Matthews versus the Rangers, it wasn't... They lost the game. So, yes, james dolan can run around in his underwear with his hands up champion i did it i did it i'm an eight-year-old champion of the world and tom wilson i'm coming for you next i'm gonna beat beat your butt in your face stink face but outside of goaltending there wasn't a lot of promise you
Starting point is 00:58:39 take away yeah the game from the range yeah so except for adam fox who is oh my god devastating best defenseman in the league yeah i should mention that well and like and they still even on a night where they're not playing very well every time zabana jack gets the puck i'm like oh shit like he's a real clenching player oh yeah panarin panarin i shouldn't dismiss it that much there are there are very good pieces that uh the previous regime built and shestorkin obviously um i did i did want to talk about that though because um i had a disagreement with um much of Leafs nation apparently because I said in my LFR I go I go yes the Leafs greatly outshot the Rangers how many of those shots were dangerous and then what I said in the video was name five okay sorry
Starting point is 00:59:25 before overtime overtime was stupid that was that was another beast but before overtime I go name five big saves to short and had to make name name three name two right because I didn't think it was that many now people were they were really lathering me with the uh with the stats look at this stat look at this chart look at this you know what one i really distrust and i and i gotta say i really just oh look at this scoring chance charts who the who the hell gets to judge whether or not it's a it's a high danger scoring chance is it just because it's in a certain area what was the how many high danger scoring chances does ilya mikhayev have every scoring chance he has is a low danger scoring chance you know what i mean because it's him yes well okay on that point and
Starting point is 01:00:14 this is interesting because how data is collected it does play into certain things and of course you can't look at one game as why we always kind of extrapolate over the course of a season of course but um what was the there was a i think it was montreal and this is back when people really cared how many hits your team through during a game because they actually saw that as a metric for success don cherry used to quote it uh everybody's like wow luke shen leading the league and hits yeah because the leafs never once had the puck so so but nobody looked at it that way as early or sorry as late as like 10 years ago it's crazy but who was the one where like the hit counter was through the roof there was a islanders yeah islanders they had like a hundred
Starting point is 01:00:51 more hits than anybody else and then it's so it came down to somebody somebody was there and judged like a slight graze as a bing bing bing bing bing bing bing bing it happens with uh with rebounds and assists in basketball like the home team always gets some phony rebounds and assists you know you give it to the the the guy even though the pass really never led to the shot or guys who uh to get a triple double they'll miss on purpose and get their own rebound which shouldn't count that's happened a couple of times yes um that's such a shitty thing to do and it always looks ridiculous when they do it anyway sorry i brought up the shishorkan point because I was listening to I was doing my morning stretches and listening to Sheldon Keefe address
Starting point is 01:01:33 the media you know like you do when you're on the floor listening to Sheldon Keefe and he said something that made me go you know what I don't know if I was entirely right with my point about Shostorkin but I was at least I was at least halfway there he goes well we had a lot of clean looks on him a lot of them were too clean and I was just like oh yes Sheldon what does that mean Yes. Tell me what that means. Here's exactly what it means. They're clean looks because no one's in front of the net.
Starting point is 01:02:02 What did we learn from the Amazon documentary? What do we know about this team? What do they lack? What are they trying to do? When they go up and they get bunting and they go up and they get Richie, what are they trying to do? They're trying to score playoff style goals. They got lots of clean looks last year.
Starting point is 01:02:17 They got lots of clean looks against the Habs. Too clean. i'm not saying stand in the way but i am saying when there's one good shot it's good to get the one good shot when there's one good shot stand in front it could be two could be three could be four could go in the fucking net well why does it seem like they get goalied so often that's it that's it i was just gonna say how does anton forsberg forsberg and then shuster can come in like you know who's george vesna next week well who's the best goalie in the league next week aiden hill or james reimer come on down you're the new reigning best goalie in the league
Starting point is 01:02:54 reimer's not there anymore he's there again yeah he's re-sharked yeah he was he was great as their backup for like five minutes they're good with his asshole you know they liked it that's not they brought it back imagine if someone skipped over that part and just got to you saying that and they don't know what the context is at all if you're that person leave a comment i want to know what you think we're talking about anyway if they don't adjust and we know keith is trying to get this message across to them if they don't adjust they're just going to keep playing dominic hashik in 1999 every night every night it sucks doesn't it suck doesn't it suck when you work really hard and you shoot and you don't score you know what's more fun the opposite of that
Starting point is 01:03:41 scoring a big old bunch i don't god that they'll do it just drives me out of my mind i have to tell you seeing matthews in the lineup you really he's stupid didn't he have like 14 shot at them yeah 16 he had eight shots and 16 attempts and he is ridiculous poke check and nobody on that team ever has a right to ask for a contract within two or three million of whatever he makes in a year ever again whatever his next deal is with the leafs and it will be with the leafs yeah okay sure he'll be with the coyotes by the way the coyotes are doing just as an aside they're like they're for the relaxed dress dress code and the walk up with the lights and everything so sick yeah good work loses its fire a bit when they get demolished right yes i still like i
Starting point is 01:04:26 appreciate that some theater for god's sake it's nice looking great the loon i know i know like Well, you saw Russell Westbrook walking in like a Scooby-Doo character yesterday and just throwing up bricks at the L.A. Lakers game. Oh, really? Oh, yeah. It happens. You still can look stylish and be bad. I mean, listen, at least you get one of two.
Starting point is 01:04:46 But my thing with the Leafs, I got a little disappointed. Imagine you look like crap and you play like it. No, it's better. You're right. It is better to be one of two. Matthews is going to sign here. I know that. but what i what i would say no but what i would say as the next whoever the person is doing that
Starting point is 01:05:05 contract is no one can make within two or three million of what he makes okay no one can no one no one on that team dominates the ice the way he does and that's not an insult to any contract i don't need marner trending don't be a fucking asshole but but austin matthews is it's not head and shoulders it's everybody else is he's everybody else is like to escape he is so good and so dominant when he's on there and he's coming off an injury and missed training camp a good chunk of it let me let me let me say something here uh the hate on mitch marner is far too much it's insane he's an elite player in this league he started struggling a little bit he's going to get it back yes and when he gets it back he's going to be another elite player in this league
Starting point is 01:05:45 he's going to contend for well the art ross is conor mcdavid's until he decides to not do that anymore but whatever the runner up for that uh he's going to be in the mix for the scoring race top 10 john tavaris i think is a wonderful leader i think he's a hard worker i think he's an excellent net front presence i would trade both of those players for conditional sevenths just to get the cap space to keep austin matthews i would i would trade both of them for conditional sevenths and never think of them again to sign austin matthews to i don't know what do you think the number is austin that's the one we're going with he the organization has never had a player ever ever he's the best leaf there's ever been i'll i'll drive willie to the airport and shave his head
Starting point is 01:06:32 when i drop him off too far before i let austin matthews go to arizona i will no no i'd rather matthews go to arizona no you want you want uh uh screw calgary i'm not from there anymore william nylander over which is hilarious i want the swedish king william nylander to stay here and that's all that's all i'm asking that's very funny by the way he's like i'm not from there he's not like well my mom my mom had a similar situation she was born in edmonton because my grandfather was bound to determine that she was going to have a canadian citizenship uh but two weeks later they moved to pittsburgh and my mom's like i'm an american like i why is that allowed what do you mean like what can't she gets citizenship forever because it's
Starting point is 01:07:16 like ah well you were born here you put in your two weeks you're born here yeah that's why that's allowed can you imagine they didn't give you citizenship yeah as i was saying i'm not a problem for you no that seems right what are you asking i don't know i'm gonna shut up and have chocolate yeah i hate when these people immigrate from the womb don't you adam why you better come here and work your mom bullshitted the system when's that segment on maryland coming all right stephen ford over here yeah really if these babies aren't working hard get out of here you only spent two weeks in this country but you are born here i don't want you to like it i really you really see why he gets shoved
Starting point is 01:07:59 in a broom closet anytime anyone needs to win an election shut up shut up so but so so um uh okay so nick caprio's tweeting about kucherov talk is kucherov injury stems from a groin injury he first suffered in the first game versus columbus in 2020 holy shit that may not have healed properly may take some time to complete uh to know complete damage and best course of action uh hopeful for the lightning that the ballpark is 10 weeks and not the full season wow that's insane this is the toll of the stanley cup by the way like everyone's ah they're just ltir in it like it's a built-in part of their strategy now no competing for the stanley cup ruins your body that's why doing it twice is it's hard so ridiculous yeah so unattainable
Starting point is 01:08:55 and why so many players who do end up doing it are never the same again tell me the lightning are going to call the sabers about jack eichel uh come on yeah no it's looking more realistic come on i you guys thought it was crazy i did because there wasn't a path forward and now there is uh the other thing is another person who's out 10 weeks minimum which sucks is nick robertson what did he do man broke his tibula because your fibula is the biggest bone the tibula is the second biggest i know i meant like what did he like it like you step on a voodoo doll i don't know and it's it's a shame because you got you got two two seasons where he starts literally game one or game two with an injury and the pandemic so his development hasn't been what
Starting point is 01:09:40 it should be right he hasn't had time on the ice he hasn't had access to the same sort of things that you would have in normal time it's a bummer games just games and games against peers like that that's what's so important about junior hockey he was the best goal scorer in junior hockey and he had another full season of being that ahead of him nope not anymore not anymore you're not allowed okay well i'm gonna play in the nhl all right cool yeah you look good and you're hurt and all right this year's a fresh start and i'm gonna go down to the minors and that's where i'm gonna start i'm gonna dominate that league and you're hurt this poor kid what'd he do i know i know but you gotta hope that he can come back like andreas johnson was one that same sort of
Starting point is 01:10:24 thing came back from the injury and was unfreaking believable and i think he played some games in the playoffs for the leafs and then he went down and won the calder cup with the marlies and i'm not saying that they're comparable in terms of isn't wasn't that the year uh no but you're getting the timeline confused okay am i okay yeah so he was a really really his story's fascinating he had the talent of a much lower pick in the draft but um i think his cardio held him back and they he had like undiagnosed asthma or some sort of undiagnosed asthma gets that dealt with rex sweet rex comes to the ahl he's looking unreal he was on like a an american hockey league line with like kneelander and connor brown like it's not fair or like zach hyman or something like it it wasn't fair
Starting point is 01:11:12 at all one of his first games boom dirty hit uh dodging uh no no dodging was everybody else this one was uh he seriously targeted the leafs it was brutal uh i think it was a guy named dan kelly he got suspended 10 games for the hit and johnson was concussed so bad he couldn't get on the plane oh right and his development was shattered for a little bit and then he built it up built it up built it up until he got that late season call up against the bruins then he was sent down for the calder cup and then the next year he had the brutal injury that kept him out of the lineup for most of the season man yeah crazy and he's just starting to look like andreas johnson again like now yeah now with the devils there's another team having a decent little start no kidding
Starting point is 01:12:01 why do i retain that and not long division i don't know that who cares about long division we got calculators anyway um yeah by the way before we get to the press conference here because i know we gotta we gotta wrap soon uh mark andre flurry and the chicago blackhawks we talked a little bit about the jeremy colton thing so i hesitate to go back but they are oh three and one and not i say mark andre fleur in the black he's the new guy so he there's a lot of new guys there yeah there is is that the is that the reason i know it's over reaction season i'm not trying not to overreact here but like it doesn't it's the way they're losing right it's not that they're losing it's the way they're losing yeah there was a there was
Starting point is 01:12:42 a play it was seth jones gave it to someone at the point i don't know who that someone was but they gave it away and i was torn between you can't do that and that's why the goal went in and what is flurry doing there it's um i don't remember who it was but they're like oh just you wait flurry playing behind vegas's defense is very different than chicago's there's a lot of you know we were talking about numbers and scoring chances and how i don't trust some and you know there's a lot of that out there um a lot of hockey guys thought the blackhawks were gonna be awesome defensively and maybe they will be maybe it'll click but a lot of very smart people were like look out this team might be dog shit and i tell you what early returns are dog shit
Starting point is 01:13:37 they might they might be fixed by a coaching change i don't know but um seth jones is a fascinating case study in the nhl so many people think he's so good and so many people think he's so bad no one's like ah seth jones okay and his his extension does not kick in until next year yeah that's exactly like the storyline i'm looking at with this team is what is what is ses jones gonna do because he's he's feeling the pressure right now i saw him in one of the post games and didn't look too happy about the start which nobody should be no but like you said it's it's literally the two opposite sides are fighting everyone who's some one half is like okay this guy he eats up so many minutes he's the number one defenseman there's a reason they're paying him
Starting point is 01:14:26 all this money and then there's a another community the mainly the analytics community who are like seth jones's dog shit and there's no in between and i want to see where it lands because it's going to be somewhere in between i want to see what the truth is and how this turns out for the black ops because it could be scary or it could be a nice surprise and and like i don't think there should be a thirst to be right about that because when he's bad people go ah i told you when he's good ah see i told you like no there is obviously something to learn here with this player because how were both sides so aggressively wrong at times what about this one guy what's the truth in his contributions to the hockey team i'm i would love to know like i would love to just sit
Starting point is 01:15:14 down with someone like the biggest seth jones fan in the world and be like what do you see what is this and then i'd like to sit down with a nerd and be like okay so i'm seeing him do this i'm seeing him do that why isn't that clicking there are some players and it seems to happen to defensemen a lot who can do a lot they're talented they're very talented um and the numbers just are their enemy um jack johnson you can do a lot without filling up your fancy stats yeah yeah oh yeah um jay ballmeister i don't remember exactly what his possession numbers are but i remember him being a guy for a number of years where everyone's like why does he play so much why is that your reputation sometimes it was like how many teams had to jack johnson have to play
Starting point is 01:16:04 for but we finally were like okay so he's not not great and then he plays for colorado and scores the nicest goal jack johnson's still going he's still i know that's not a thing that's happened like jack johnson's run hasn't run out no they're going but like bo meester was a guy like his his reputation and seth jones sort of has it where like oh i'm an offensive specialist i'm a playmaker i'm a i'm a defensive stall ward well oh what do you do jay i play 45 minutes a night okay but like what's your specialty that i eat the minutes i yeah we uh nothing really happens on either side my special ability is our teams only the teams i play for only ever have two pairs because there's no need for a third and then how many wins does that contribute to your team
Starting point is 01:16:52 i assume it's a positive metric i think it probably would be because if you have a player that's just essentially neutral well and cess jones does that he is the number one guy who will eat the most amount of minutes for your defense score and the blackhawks had like brent seabrook and duncan keith for so long who were obviously great in their primes and i have a hard time believing the people who evaluate talent there are all of a sudden so aggressively wrong about this guy but why does every number stand out as awful yeah there's something weird there well i i want to see the full season full season of seth jones four four games and a non-covid he had covid we got to remember the guy had covid so like i don't know yeah well i don't know him
Starting point is 01:17:39 before covid they did they did i'm just no but that's trying to be fair you see it is you see adams warm heart i'm trying to be a nice guy with him just going well you know have you considered you're yelling at j fresh on twitter fuck stop throwing your jerk at the guy you know what i always think about him sympathetic with j fresh yeah man j fresh is blunt as it comes i appreciate it yeah no uh no that's the great thing about the analytics community is they never dance on your grave every time you allow a goal.
Starting point is 01:18:18 Oh, no. Well, but the thing is, man, most of the... They do, bro. Who are they? But, but, but, who have they objectively been wrong about?
Starting point is 01:18:28 And I'm not counting. That's the thing. Yeah, but like usually... Oh, but they are. They're counting. They're counting when they're right. It's stadium. But I would say,
Starting point is 01:18:39 I would say like... Or see these hands. I think the problem is is that they get discount they get discounted so much that it's like don't you guys fucking see this we told you this was gonna happen i get that sort of frustration i i don't like the piling on okay well there's a lot of piling on on twitter and i don't like it well i will say this so i don't scroll told you in the playoffs last year dom ducharme is not a great coach and look at look at who's owing for to start the year just i told you see see the idiot it's not personal i
Starting point is 01:19:11 just don't think he's a great coach for this team anyway shout out to those guys they do fucking brilliant off the rail show uh let's do uh the press conference the steve dangle press conference sorry to do this breaking news uh according to chris johnson of the sdpn mark bergevin speaking at an impromptu availability with montreal reporters after his team's own forced start says he won't make a roster change just for the sake of making a change oh i thought you were gonna say stepping down but you know you know that he's talking in front of the team because he's gonna be the dartboard now right because that's his job that's his job
Starting point is 01:19:52 is to step in be the dartboard i just thought that that was relevant to the conversation man but four games remember how long did it take todd richards with columbus because sergey had a slow start i think it was like eight honestly be watching montreal if they don't turn this around didn't do charm just get an extension wow adam i ran this by steve before the show okay and i want to run it by you live on the podcast okay so someone asked me uh boot master ben said jesse what's your plan a b and c approach for rebuilding the sabers in gm mode so tonight on twitch i'm going to be rebuilding the sabers oh that's sick in franchise i can't wait for that i'm gonna watch that so it's gonna be it's gonna be a fun stream and i was doing some
Starting point is 01:20:39 tests yesterday i was talking to steve i was doing some tests yesterday about how i'm gonna start it off so the scenario that we're gonna do on the twitch stream is i was named gm of the sabers in july-ish and i allowed jack eichel to get his surgery but he still wants to trade so you have to trade jack so the first thing i'm gonna do when i fire up franchise mode is trade jack eichel and he can be and he is not injured anymore he can play because i let him have the surgery and he got it got it all done and he's now he's back and he's playing so that's the scenario gotta suspend disbelief a little bit yeah yeah we gotta play make believe it's fun it's a good time i like that so the trade i think i'm gonna start off with is jack eichel to calgary for kachuk and
Starting point is 01:21:20 lindholm do you think that they're gonna go for that yes so i know it works so i know i can start there in the game oh that's a great start but that means he could get more so steve what was when i told you that what did you tell me well i was saying you should at least move up so uh what could make it work is calgary's first is included in the deal and buffalo's second so even if calgary were to win the stanley cup and buffalo were to finish dead last you'd be moving up from like 33rd to 32nd right you know what i mean but that probably wouldn't happen so you'd be moving up i don't know you could move up all the way to you can't top 10 protect that pick no i don't think you could do that no if calgary loses they should be able to lose why don't they
Starting point is 01:22:06 have that that's easy you're right they should do that but anyway okay do you think that the that's where i'm gonna start i like that you like it yeah here's the thing uh lindholm is a bastard to play against and kachuk is a bastard to play against and what what is the what are the buffalo sabers coming into this year ignoring how they've started what do they need they need an identity anybody they need an identity they need something so if you're gonna come to buffalo you might win but you're gonna hate it that's a great way to start it'd be a team that represents their fans yeah yeah the underdog all these goddamn toronto people come buying up all the tickets i like that um anyway i think uh uh i think that's a great start my question is going to be and and we can
Starting point is 01:22:50 save this for the stream who do you sign as a goalie because you're not trading for one right risk the line and was risk the line and traded in august because if you still have risk the line no it'll be rosters as of october 6th okay so you don't have risto so i am curious to see what you do with the goaltending situation because i think that's going to make or break and i don't think you make the playoffs until at least season two but i'm going to say because i don't think you can move enough there's not enough that the sabers have to make this team good and that it's going to be on super hard setting right it's going to be on medium so it'll be you just gotta hope that lukin and uh his uh potential pans out i've also set it only to
Starting point is 01:23:33 five years so i at the end of five years i gotta win the stanley cup you better be a waivers maverick on this one i'm gonna be i'll be first for waivers like going in the first year that'll be good yeah or uh amadio which is what maybe should have happened i don't know and like guys like ho saying they should still be on uh be free agents you can sign them so i i can sign them so i can build the roster that way as well for the first year like that i'm gonna do that okay that's that's the start i'm looking forward to it tonight um this was from floro 01 for both of you do y'all want another dog are you guys in another dog market no just curious i have two i have two dogs and i love my dogs but this will be it for
Starting point is 01:24:21 me for dogs for the remainder of my life i will give to dog charities i will i'm all done i'm all done oh wow not even when like everly's a little older i think you know what it is it's it's not that i don't love dogs because this is now i have now i've had three dogs in my life i love dogs but i think sometimes you get to a point where you go i love you too i don't think i have tried other things i would like to do other things and dogs do any any dog owner will tell you this especially you've got two who's going to take the two dogs other than like a uh you know a border jesse and jesse will take the dogs so i think for me i think i would like to see what life is like on the other side of dog eventually but i'm not rushing that i love my animals it's
Starting point is 01:25:06 just you know sometimes you're like i think i've done this i have had this experience it's been great uh i would like another um i don't know about how soon um i don't know i would like leo to get the experience of raising a puppy but i want him to remember it and like okay we wait till he's four is he really gonna remember it like is he gonna be taking lessons from that I don't know the answer to that
Starting point is 01:25:40 but then you know losing Charlie makes me go alright well you never know how long Iggy's got right and like I have a timeline for well if he were to make it to this age for Leo
Starting point is 01:25:56 then that would be great and maybe he could even be around for the puppy and jesse i try not to think about it oh sorry jesse i try not to think about it i'm focused on iggy right now thank you very much okay what about you i'd like another dog i just don't have i live in a condo yeah i can't i can't do the second dog thing but i think if i ever get a backyard one day uh i'd like two dogs okay waffles would fit in your sweater though waffles have been the palm of my hand this one's from felix it had the most reactions on any question in the press conference uh uh channel yeah you look at that so the question was how much do we need to donate to easter seals for a musical lfr they want you to sing an lfr like
Starting point is 01:26:39 high school musical style would you do it for a certain price point a million dollars i don't know if you really want that sometimes it's like beware of what you ask for because you might get it i don't want to do that you don't want to might get that why not you don't want that you know what no like that's i'd rather have now if you want steve to rap in lfr no look how many people rap in lfr i don't want to do that here's how strongly i don't want to do that i'm like ah you know i've raised enough money look how many people want this compared to the other question look that's ridiculous everybody wants you to sing an lfr it's just not enough do a musical lfr absolutely not no if people donate ten thousand
Starting point is 01:27:19 ten thousand dollars yeah that's nothing it's not a lot of money i will find ten thousand dollars and pay it so that i don't have to sing like i no no i don't want to do that thousand bucks i'll find it i will start another podcast and you won't be invited will it also go over time oh for sure okay just checking um yeah no uh uh my chest got tighter when you suggested that no all of my fight or flight reflexes are set on flight right now no simply no donate to east do you want one more question yes this one's from zach uh he does vlogs like in your style but for columbus oh cool hey and zach wants to know is it more difficult to vlog for a smaller market team i wish i could tell you zach um yeah probably i mean one of the i mean the most unfair
Starting point is 01:28:21 advantage uh i've had in this whole youtube blogging game is i talk for the biggest team right i mean it's if i started in 2007 who could i have who could i have made videos about after every single game and uh theoretically done well vancouver pittsburgh yeah yeah see that's a small market team but their story is so fascinating yeah and they won so much that you'd be yeah you'd have a long playoff so that's a unicorn i'd say pittsburgh is a unicorn oh imagine having a long playoff jesse i'd say maybe the canucks the habs are the rangers and even the habs is a very tough one in this country because of the split yeah because of the language split so really it's like the leafs if you're starting out oh seven you could do the kings no you'd be an la hockey
Starting point is 01:29:17 vlogger boston no boston that's a good one boston is a is a 700 000 person market but has a huge metro area and has some of the most insane sports fans i've ever seen in my life whatever they don't have a population they make up for in intensity boston and sports outlets is like starbucks to the rest of the world yeah like it's there's just there's so much sports in boston so much and they get to cover everything because they win everything ever ever always um it yeah so my unfair advantage historically has been you know the leafs and i can make a video about dennis mulligan that gets like 50 000 views and i can make a video about hey the leaf signed alex barabanov and that video has over a hundred thousand views we can talk about how we lost
Starting point is 01:30:02 our fourth line center on waivers and that's a story son of a gun i did connor carrot got traded to dallas i made a whole video about that and it got like 70 000 views like any galchenyuk that trade was over 100 000 views it's just it's money in the bank now i have a base that i've built up over time but um i guess what i would say about uh small market team is uh talk to blue jackets fans right like i i spent a long time worrying about the wrong things and um when i worked for i think it was leafs tv for a little bit and cbc at the very beginning i tried to be like well i'm more of a hockey fan than a leafs fan like because i was i thought my career was going to go in another direction and i would eventually have to shed that um i tried to cater to other fan bases
Starting point is 01:30:58 while alienating the one I should be worrying about the most which is Leafs fans it's called Leafs fan reaction stupid it's in the name and I lost sight of that so you have to talk to Blue Jackets fans in the way that only a Blue Jackets fan could
Starting point is 01:31:14 right you know the answer to how to achieve success here I do not and that's good news for you Zach because I'm not you I can't wait to start the Zach Dangle podcast was that a couple of things before we go mark delpy mark bergevin says shea weber hasn't had
Starting point is 01:31:34 any surgery since the end of last season will not be back this year when asked if he was holding out hope that he would resume his career bergevin said it's a long shot wow and bergevin also said that in a perfect world he would like to be back as montreal gm next year but what else is he gonna say right um i would also like to add before we go here that uh we should have an announcement on the next show coming to the sdpn that's right another one uh in the next week uh uh we got more and actually it's funny people people have asked like well how many more i'm like you don't get to know that adam wilde be like i don't have an announcement yeah i do have we do have an announcement coming uh i don't know the particular day yet but i definitely think that it's going to
Starting point is 01:32:18 be very very soon what is it what the new what's the announcement yeah what is it tell us well We can't. That's the thing. I'm teasing the announcement. What is it, though? But I can't talk about it. Can you just press the button and we get out of the show? What's the announcement? Why don't you tell us that? I'm not telling you the announcement.
