lot of fun there just like what's uh the one thing that caught you off guard about being a dad that like nobody prepared you for and then you realize you're like oh what i didn't even know this you have one thing or a couple things yeah the so you know i keep bringing up all the dad books and stuff um but they did not properly prepare me for the unbelievable difference between boy diapers and girl diapers so i was around adam one time when everly peed while he was changing her and his reaction was oh oh evy oh no did you pee oh leo it's a crisis because he's got Other equipment man And he pees on

The diaper he was in The diaper I was going to put him in Diapers that are on the side Our record for diapers used in a single change is four And we've done it three times Is it just like a hose that just spreads That you can't turn off And you're like stop

We're talking about you One day you're going to be an adult And this story is going to be out there He doesn't even know he's on a podcast You're on a podcast It's a Leo podcast it is his second appearance you're famous you've been on tv it's been on tv oh yeah paul paul dissonant made a very inappropriate joke did you see that no no so i was uh in our nhl 20

tournament on sportsnet i beat alex to brinkett narrowly in the first round uh so my second round opponent was supposed to be jordan biddington and they did an episode where you know my chair is empty and oh where's steve is he ducking jordan biddington and i was like guys i have to pull out of the tournament i had a baby blah blah and they're like oh that's cute that's cute and paul biz nasty just goes i guess that's the only thing he's pulling out of my mom watched that no no well listen all right also did you see iggy there it's a madhouse it's a madhouse also obviously leo doesn't startle when i yell so that's that's been the big plus because i've been shooting videos non-stop for now for now for now hopefully he

doesn't i don't know if he develops that uh the other the other thing is just um hey buddy here i'm gonna give you back to mom how's that okay leo back to mommy and uh we need to bring up um sad news because since you've had a member of your family enter you've had two members of your family leave yeah man um well yeah Iggy sits right down next to me so we didn't talk about this because it seemed inappropriate to bring up when Chris Johnson was on last show but uh Leo was one week old and uh for the first few days of Leo's life uh we were sans dogs uh they were at um my in-laws place uh Charlie came home on this well Iggy and Charlie came home this Saturday and charlie was kind of weird uh and his gums were pale and he drank a ton of water so i'm like okay

he's dehydrated sunday he makes a comeback he's still not really eating properly but like he's going after chicken like crazy he's drinking lots of water he appears to have high energy monday he can barely stand up and i had to carry him to the car brought him to the vet and um they basically said uh if it's something to do with his spleen we can probably save him um if it's spread he's done and it's spread he was done so that was it that freaking sucked and then probably after that and then my grandpa passed um 95 and i mean it's i mean it's it sounds horrible that like it sounds like i took charlie's death worse than my grandfathers but your life was a life to celebrate yes yes and i'm up on the show before because he

fought in d-day and you've told some stories oh he fought in d-day he uh these american soldiers rescued him when he was wounded on a beach in salerno italy and um uh he misunderstood them so he punched a bunch of them he thought they were gonna they they wanted to cut off his leg they said no you idiot we want to cut off your pants and he said oh okay and um you know he led yes like you said he led a life to be celebrated um and you know my parents said hey can you call when you have a chance and i knew you know so you know whereas charlie was we were shocked like we had no indicators that he was uh even slowing down or anything but not to start the show with the bummer because everybody out there listening this feels for you because it's just a

roller coaster of emotions to have a baby and then have two other members of your family taken away from you like i can't our hearts go out to you steve oh buddy thank you but like you don't um you don't deal with things the best when you're sleep deprived and that's all i am right now and that was the second thing i was going to say to you is uh they tell you like oh you're going to be tired and i'm like i work in sports like i i was a i was an intern while doing a full-time course load and working at the zoo i know i know tired i'm not scared of tired this is tired this is ridiculous um i had i've had i'm getting better as leo gets better i'm obviously getting better um but uh yeah like i'm actually enjoying burying my head in work now because this is the most this

is usually a very anxious time of year this should be a time of year where i get to relax and just chill and have a few beers with my buddies and i'm always like i haven't been doing anything for a month and i feel lazy and my career is over and i'm gonna lose my youtube channel and i'm just gonna friggin how am i gonna pay for the house um but now i'm you know neck deep in work like the first round of the playoffs is usually chaos to work and the lead into that is going to be 52 games in nine days right in this unprecedented event and the whole time i got this infant to take care of and i'm dealing with other things when was the last time you had eight continuous hours of sleep oh at least june 19th because june 20th is when we went to the

hospital so it was at least june 19th that's absurd but i don't i might not i i don't know because at that point i still thought i had like two weeks left so i'm having a good time i'm staying up all night playing nhl um i find i'm sorry not really preparing no no four weeks left yeah i got i got lots of time and uh no no i did not did did i go through the whole story of how everything i don't remember i don't remember anything we haven't done enough shows yeah we've we've been kind of taking it slow because this should be, these two months should be our off season and a week, a week tomorrow the NHL is back. Right. So, yeah.

So we're going to be going until whenever, like next summer essentially, because it's going to be the off season and then it's going to be the new season and then it's going to be the next off season and then we'll finally have a break. so as you'll notice anybody watching and anyway listening uh adam's not here he was on virgin this this week and actually next week on virgin radio so he's off vacation there so we decided hey take a actual vacation when you get off the podcast and you get off the radio go enjoy

this week and then uh maybe next week it'll be the three of us we'll see we'll play but as soon as we're we're just rolling and that's so soon that's so so soon I can't it kind of snuck up on everybody it did I had the seven seven video series that I planned on doing breaking the Leafs season the Leafs 70 game season so far breaking that down into seven ten game segments and I had that idea and um I reached out to Robert Malloy RS Malloy on Twitter um because I knew they know my LFR videos better than I do and I was like can you go through cut some of your favorite clips I paid them to do it paid interns although this person's not our intern but um uh yeah I was gonna do them and upload them over the two weeks that I had left

and Leo said that's cute um and I'm like oh it's okay I'll get used to being a dad you know and then uh the other day I'm sitting there and I'm like okay I want to upload one per day this is nine days oh shit like I gotta do this right now or I'm not gonna do it ever and I've already paid for it so they might as well get it done might as well get it done so i think three went up today i've already shot four and five so i gotta edit those i gotta shoot two more i gotta shoot for something else on friday that i don't think i'm allowed to talk about yet and then of course there's obviously the funeral and everything and i'm raising a child and and i know that wants to I'm doing a Zoom call tomorrow.

We're recording something with Justin Bourne. I'm doing a podcast with you right now, Jesse Blake. Tomorrow, the MLB season kicks off. NBA is back today in exhibition action. They're actually playing basketball games again with zero COVID cases, even though Steve didn't believe in the bubble. It proved him wrong. Okay, can we – this is very funny.

So I don't know if we've really done this on the show. You, Adam, and I have butted heads on the Florida bubble, and whether or not that's a good idea they're doing it properly so far it's working baseball what is baseball doing i i feel like they don't have them i don't even know if they're testing people like the jays don't have a stadium yeah and it just came out before the podcast that pittsburgh rejected them so they they can't even go to pittsburgh even though that looked like a plan for 24 hours that's no longer happening and everybody just me lying around playing games like normal except no fans which i feel like is a ridiculous plan it's absolutely it's absolutely

ridiculous it's not a plan and uh listen they might be able to get through the whole season and you know no one gets actually sick or at very least dies but like that's so far beyond the point um it's just like this like nothing's happening it's it's the most ridiculous thing like you argued for hardcore with orlando it is an anomaly stop saying florida even though it's in florida it's this weird the active bubble yeah yes uh hockey bubble cities underground tunnels and Fences and protocol Baseball's just Friggin

The Red Sox? Also I didn't even know Like I didn't even know That game was happening Two day Season They kick off in Tampa They're playing the

They're playing the Rays Starting In Tampa Yeah It's going to happen. Okay. Bay bar, get a bay bar.

The NBA bubble is looking like a very good idea right now. They nailed it with zero cases, and hopefully that continues. Hopefully the NHL bubble turns out to be the same sort of result where there's no cases because they've secured it and it's locked down and they're continually testing and everything's getting cleaned. So let's hope hockey kicks off one week from now. because if i do all these friggin videos for nothing i'm gonna be pissed and i feel like we should start off with uh

with the leafs of course because leafs of course and um the most controversial thing over the last week um is probably their off-season plans the plans that uh they've done before this pandemic where they would bring they would pay for players to come and practice and and do training with coaches and how the nhl has eliminated that luxury so it all started with a tweet which was okay good good so last friday this tweet went out from account for hockey they quoted elliot freedman on the fan 590 saying toronto was a team that a lot of their prospects or a number of them would come to toronto in the

summer and they work out at the practice facility and they really improve those players and teams were like we don't like that so the uh and then the threaded tweet says elliot freeman on the fan 590 says that with the new cba one thing that has changed was that other teams saw how toronto kept their facilities open during past off seasons for players and prospects to train but other teams didn't like it and felt it was unfair so now they can't anymore so that blew up and blew up hey why can't why did the nhl take away this completely reasonable thing of just opening your facilities and letting people who work for your company use your company building well and i hope i hope to that go ahead i hope account for hockey understands the power they have with that

twitter account by the way because i'm doing my recaps of the leaf season and account for hockey basically was the second part of a chain reaction that changed hockey culture as we know it the first was terry koshan wrote that babcock made a rookie in 2016 um make a list of the players from most hard-working to laziest account for hockey tweeted that snippet from the article ian tullock then tweeted that that player was mitch marner akim aliou then said no big surprise because and then he told his bill peters story and domino domino domino domino domino all right so now there's this he takes the snippet from this elliot friedman he or she i don't know who they are they they take this uh snippet from this elliot friedman interview and people freaked out

and i think rightfully so because as it was presented that's ridiculous the beef seemed to be that the leafs had a practice facility that was used during the offseason and teams were mad about it which is absurd it's absurd it's theirs frig off who cares okay well they have one and we don't yeah how farts like who cares what you feel the way it is written it sounds like the Leafs open MasterCard Center during or Ford Performance Center during the offseason and that the CBA shut that down and now you can't use ice anymore but that's not what happened at all no so Chris johnston uh put in the caveat that you've already mentioned that the leafs were paying for players to do this they were flying them in i don't know what else etc etc but they were getting some sort

of they were having expenses covered i don't think they were being paid to do it if they were being paid to do it that's obviously illegal um and they should be penalized for that but if it's just them being flown in it makes more sense than previously said but it's still so petty and like when sports net sent me to the all-star game in st louis i didn't foot the bill right they paid for an employee to go they paid for all their employees to go and you know you a lot of people are like wow austin matthews is rich he can afford it well austin we're not talking about austin matthews we're talking about prospects we're talking about guys who are probably not uh well established financially you know if we're talking about prospects we're talking about guys who

might have been making i don't know 60 000 a year which is i i'm sure there's a lot of people listening to this right now that are like damn i'd like to make 60 000 it ain't rich you know it's if i'm flying in from orange old sweet or helsinki or vladivostok or somewhere uh even somewhere in the states like why i'm coming to practice at your facility i'm coming to become a better employee for you why should i have to pay for this and the team would cover their expenses to me that makes perfect sense um but i guess it's just such a mickey mouse league that teams are upset about that i just i just i don't understand i don't understand like a concrete example is nick robertson yes from uh california yes so say last offseason the leafs pay for his

flight from california where he's living the offseason because that's where he's from to toronto to train with uh gary roberts for two weeks now under the cba paying for the flight is illegal and paying for the training is illegal which is is that understandable if you're because the NHL's mandate is that parity must exist no matter what they must have the most even playing field so if that's their mandate it makes sense but that's a ridiculous thing to try and enforce it's completely ridiculous like well I remember talking to Tobias Lindbergh when he came to the Leafs from the Sens organization and he was like oh the Leafs they bring a goalie coach on the road that's crazy I think it was or it was like a video guy or is it was someone I'm like what

and like what are they gonna are they gonna take that away too listen some teams have money and some teams don't and in in hockey there's it sounds like there's six teams that have money and the rest of them are the Sens uh and like listen there's flying Nick Robertson from california to stouffville yeah that to me is that makes well sorry flying him from california to toronto to etobicoke yes that's a very torontonian thing you just did there jesse like flying him from california to toronto pearson airport let's say billy bishop billy bishop it's it's just better anyway flying them there to me the leafs covering that bill makes perfect sense they're flying an employee to their practice facility to practice

now paying for him to train with gary roberts who i understand to and this is a hypothetical yeah right so flying him to go train with gary roberts who i understand does not work with the toronto maple leafs okay i understand how that's a little teams wouldn't be totally comfortable with that i get that but like now like where does it stop so like only local players can use the ford center or you got to pay your own way you know what i've seen with my own two eyes i've seen barb underhill working with tampa bay prospects in that building this was before i think she was like freelance or whatever you call it or she was a consultant for the least But she could still work with other players

Now I think she has a more formal role with the Leafs Can Like if I were the Leafs After these shenanigans I'd be like No other team may use this facility No other NHL team can use this facility Now do

I don't know if they own the building They don't I don't Well sorry I said that they own the building And other people were like Well it's the city of Toronto who owns it But they

They um the leafs are paid by the city of toronto to run it okay so it sounds like they it's it sounds to me like they would have the power to do what i just suggested i don't know if that's true but i don't know no other team can use this facility sorry sorry and like the leafs practice facility has four or five pads of ice one of them is used for commercial shoots and has stands and is sponsored get on the Leafs level or don't well that's the NHL's argument the other teams say you're you're uh the Washington Capitals and sure none of your players live in Washington full-time sure Toronto the majority a lot of your guys and the guys from

across the NHL live in the GTA in surrounding areas so it's easier for the Leafs to pay for these coaches to go train these guys if you're Washington you're paying for all these guys to come in and then paying for the coaches and maybe you're paying for hotels or whatever and the cost is astronomical that these other teams just aren't doing it with the Leafs it's like okay they're already here plus we have these billions of dollars let's just go spend it so the NHL is trying to eliminate this competitive advantage in the offseason but I'm on the side of no there are 31 soon to be 32 separate businesses that operate here if one makes more money they should be allowed to spend it and put it back into their organization well and some people rightfully

pointed out like okay but like uh the florida panthers the tampa bay lightning the dallas stars they get to enjoy the benefits of being where they are having the american dollar and also uh having their uh tax rates that they do as opposed to like ontario or quebec or something why are they allowed to enjoy and with tampa all the players who live there in the off season as well yes so why are they able to enjoy the fruits of being where they are and the leafs are not and what what is this oh yeah we just got it we got to eliminate the competitive edge a team that has not won a stanley cup in over half a century and not a playoff round since 2004 what is this are you freaking kidding me are you joking so what i said i'm like okay if we're gonna be this

silly about parity all canadian teams are allowed to spend 25 over the cap because the dollar the tax rate yeah and then i thought about that and i'm like wait a sec they're already spending more that means they got to spend even more more so tell you what what's the cap the the cap is let's say it's 83 million dollars what are american teams salary cap 75 of that listen we got to make it fair yeah all american teams uh it's like 68 million that's what that's what you get to spend listen guys we're focused on parity here it's got to be fair it like if okay so that's obviously ridiculous and we're definitely not there i don't think they're even going to humor the factoring taxes into the salary so when does it stop why is it always the least yeah if they're

building the cba for the goal of parity then you have to cut down on everything then it has to be okay if you have three bench presses in your gym all the facilities have to have three what if the Leafs have four like then one extra guy is going to be working the bench press at the same time as the other guys and like that's that's unfair that's competitive advantage you know Leafs have a video coach in the back that sometimes walks out to the bench like is that allowed do other teams have that are they going to take that away the the coaches or video personnel whoever it was that go with the Marlies on the road are they going to eliminate that so the Leafs you know we talked about championships the Leafs have a minor league championship from 2018 maybe that's a

competitive edge and as well I guess we're targeting their prospects as well so are we it's so so petty and if it sounds like I'm being a petty asshole yes I do a very good impression a backwards it's a backwards league you shouldn't be telling these teams they can't spend money on their own teams it's not like they're spending in other places like they're just they're reinvesting it in their players why is that not allowed okay the blackhawks are the anomaly right they had the three cups in six years or whatever it was in terms of teams that make money they're the anomaly the new york rangers have not won since 1994 the philadelphia flyers have not won since the 70s the Leafs have not won since the 60s the Vancouver Canucks have not won at all let teams spend their

money for crying out loud it's stupid it's stupid like it's that to me is it's such a tiny piddly little expense that it would even get brought up is ridiculous let alone a put into law. League law. You know what? I guarantee it was one owner who saw it go down. Jeremy Jacobs. Probably. Maybe. Jeremy Jacobs.

But it's one owner who saw it go down and was like, you know what? Let's spite these guys. Huge. Someone from Buffalo. They just hate their lives right now. It's garbage.

garbage um speaking of uh home ice advantage uh did you see the article that chris johnson wrote about the nhl trying to eliminate home ice advantage for the oilers and leaves so they're trying to create no i didn't that's absolutely amazing of the show wrote uh it's pretty interesting i liked it there's little tidbits in there the Leafs will be in the visiting dresser dressing room for away games obviously and um in some cases they'll be using like the Raptors uh dressing room or even the media facility when they're like teams coming in and swapping so they're perfectly fine and then the uh the game ops as well so when Columbus is playing them Columbus will get the cannon um perfectly fine when there's a goal so

that's they're trying to eliminate all these things i don't know how well it's gonna go but um they also ended up giving the least a less favorable hotel setup because they based it on points percentage so uh they've considered that the royal york is the less favorable hotel so the better teams are at hotel x so the better teams are at hotel x it's much more modern and plus It's going to be next to BMO Field where they're going to have an outdoor barbecue and sports park. Okay, so this is, that's fascinating to me, by the way, this narrative going around. I feel like not enough Toronto and Toronto-ish people have factored into this conversation that the Royal York has been called the less good hotel compared to Hotel X.

I don't know where Hotel X is exactly, and I've never stayed in it. i've stayed in the royal york once i just didn't feel like going home that night and i was drunk um exhibition you know where the gates are yes it's right there yeah royal york is across the street from the building and you don't even have to go outside hotel x buddy the more stuff that opens in toronto rush hour is back it is thoroughly back driving in that city sucks and there's going to be a lot of people who are not from the area completely caught off guard trying to do anything well they're not allowed to leave the bubble anyway are they right no they actually that's also um a weird thing that came out as well so for the first 14 days when everyone

lands in toronto they're gonna have to isolate but after those 14 days players will have the opportunity to go golfing or do other scheduled activities on their off days that's okay and leave the bubble yeah but like that's if you all go golfing together like it sounds like it's all team events like they can't go to the underground and tie one on all right so uh i think i i took care of my dog she's barking at me she doesn't like when i'm sitting at the kitchen table and And, like, I'm talking to her, and I'm talking to her. So I'm barking at her from up above. So, yeah, she's – I think I calmed her down.

We should be good. From high places. Actually, so I just read a tweet, tweeted during the show, that's actually relevant to the current conversation we're having from reporter Chris, Chris Johnston. Morgan Riley on the NHL's evolving hub plans. I mean, what we heard two weeks ago has changed today. So I'm not really positive what it's going to look like.

in terms of what the bubble has to offer i don't think it's going to be a lot but that's perfectly fine by us i would like to know those details it's very interesting because that doesn't sound like they got something new sounds like they got something worse because it's not like we were like we were just saying it's not the nba bubble where they've created a resort it's a hotel to the game so the players are gonna have to find ways to entertain themselves outside the hotel like we said they're gonna have the option to go golfing after a 14-day quarantine or at this bmo field sports park with barbecues whatever they create so we'll see how it goes for them yeah it'll be very interesting i love the story that james reimer is bringing um an airplane simulator

like a flight simulator with him what i didn't see that yeah he's gonna do flight simulator in spare time which is the most james reimer thing of all time other than the only like oh what are you gonna do flight simulator and pray like i think that would be very on brand that and just stare in the mirror and pinch my own cheeks because i'm just so gosh darn adorable james so the next thing i want to talk to you about was um uh choose your own adventure the three starter Pokemon for you to choose from. So we have

we have to hyper focus on practice here because practice is all we got. So at the least practice we've seen three different line combinations that have outraged the community. Outraged. Which starter Pokemon would you like to discuss first?

Riley and Cece? Matthews, Marner, Tavares? happening kerfoot robertson okay let's talk about the all-star line first go ahead the all-star line i think my favorite tweet i've seen so far i want to say it was bonks mullet it was some fans they're loving this by the way i'm loving the tweets from fans of the seven nhl teams that are not in it because they're just like i'm not not gonna watch but i hate this and they were like Wow, what a concept, putting your three best forwards on the same line.

These guys are nuts. Crazy. Because, well, they remember Danny Heatley and Jason Spezza and Daniel Offenson being on the same line. And Bruins have Bergeron and Marchand and Pasternak. Tavares, Matthews, Marner. It's got a lot of people outraged. But I'm super interested.

And let me ask you this. so it's been a conversation that i've had with some people they're like oh man the back half those those later years in tavaris's contract they're gonna be bad i'm gonna be older so i have a theory on that um one and i've had this belief for a long time one of the the the main criticism of john tavaris in junior was his foot speed he's never been fast Yarmir Yager was criticized basically his whole career that he was never like a burner he was never really fast so that to me doesn't suggest like oh well he's already slow so he's going to get slower no John Tavares has never had to rely on his speed to be an effective hockey player

so him getting slower over time because he's getting older doesn't concern me however if it does become an issue you could make him a winger and a hell of a winger and in certain situations if you're confident in alex kerfoot and in jason spezza and in i don't know who else takes that center position you could once or twice a period throw out this ridiculous super line of tavaris matthews and marner and what the hell do you do what the hell do you do how many lines in the nhl can stand a chance against that it's not many now do you think keith is going to use it yes yes and when they're losing like pretty much exclusively when they're losing um or maybe on an offensive zone face-off or um after a power play or well not after a power play sorry after a

penalty kill um whenever they need offensive pop or just those are your guys who you need to get more ice so every now and then you just skip a third line shift or you skip a fourth line shift or whatever because those guys are gonna play less and you gotta play matthews 22 to 25 minutes marner 22 to 25 minutes devaris 22 to 25 minutes and that's how you get them those minutes but i feel like if he really wanted to push the envelope he would do it when not not when they're losing but regular you know if people leave even if you try and get ahead you know it's tie game like why not why not just take a risk like no he can do it yeah he can do it when they're winning and he can do it when it's tied i'm just saying he should lean on it when they're

losing um heavily but yeah when it's when it's tied or when they're ahead two three shifts a period get them in there i just like there have some fun yeah uh from hockey that playing your best players all at once is so wild and crazy you know it's super not it's super not my question is every now and then you're going to need a makeup shift and who does that come from because you can't now neglect to get William Nylander his ice he needs his ice too so do you throw out something and Zach Hyman is another very effective player so do you throw something out there like Kerfoot centering Nylander and Hyman or do you just get Matthews an extra shift or Tavares an extra shift is that what it is you know maybe you maybe you rest up Tavares

the next time you want to try it, you throw William Nylander in his spot there on the left wing and then what you answer with is Tavares, Hyman and who cares? Mikheyev, I guess. I've always been the team that should run with seven defensemen if there's ever a team to

do it. You take away that forward and double shift one of them and then you have your seven defensemen so you're not running these wonky defense pairings out there. Man, you know what I'm learning doing these 7-in-70 videos is this team

defensively as bad as we talk about them being, we're not being hard enough on them. They suck. They suck. I think we should talk about the next pairing that we've been seeing. Uh-oh. Oh yeah.

Because there was a point in February when we thought Cody Cece would never play another game for the Toronto Mavericks. There was a time. he got injured and we thought this injury would take him into the off season and I missed the majority of the playoffs and just never come back and walk as a free agent and fly off into the sun and Cody CC land.

But then he comes back and he's, he's going to be there before the end of the season. And then now that the season is kicking off again, we see Riley and CC again, and that's what they're running with. That's what Keith was running with during practice. And Riley had just started playing with Barry when he went down with injury. maybe a month maybe a month of that pair they're back sorry i don't i don't think we could be happy that they're back you know no no i mean it's worth mentioning that the when cc went down

everyone's like oh the defense might get better and it didn't they were ass uh even more so um but just from a familiarity standpoint i don't i don't think sheldon keith would be doing his due diligence if he didn't at least see what riley and cc can do together um because they played together quite a bit this season had some success um i think it's worth checking out he wouldn't be doing his due diligence if he didn't check it out you notice the first bunch of practices robertson wasn't in the top 12 for forwards because he needs to see he might have had it on paper like okay but he at least was like let me see what pierre engvall's got before taking him out of that top 12 position you know what i mean i i don't mind riley and cc even if

that's what they end up deciding uh because listen i think i think what i'm learning from these videos is uh there is no right answer the right answer is something they haven't tried yet which would be maybe Dermott right on the right side because and if that's not the answer nothing is because the it's so bad it's just so bad so if it's Barry Dermott uh Muzzin Hall Riley Cece where does Sandin Marincin and Callie Rosen come into that where do you see those last two names you said I've already forgotten um you know Rosen and Marincin I'm not going to spend my time worrying about them they get in if someone gets hurt um Sandin is a fascinating one because the reason they burned year one of Sandin's ELC is because Morgan Riley got hurt so oh that's a good one

Jesse man I don't know and it was it was interesting to see them because I want to say during Sheldon keith's tenure when they were mostly healthy cc was playing third pair of minutes sandian's gonna get in he's gonna get in they're they're gonna have to rely on their youth um and to me especially against columbus in the play-in they're gonna have to rely on their most skilled players you know in a in a seven game playoff let's say nothing happened and somehow the Leafs ended up playing a seven game playoff series in April against the Blue Jackets right I give the Blue Jackets a better chance of winning that than now because now is this slop fest of you know you talk about like oh John Tortorella really getting out his clipboard every coach always has their clipboard

out when the season begins and their team doesn't friggin' listen and they make all sorts of stupid mistakes. It's the most skilled team that wins at the beginning of the season, typically. So to me that's the Leafs. I don't think it's an insult to the Columbus Blue Jackets to say the Leafs are

by far the more gifted team in the skill department. However, the Blue Jackets once mid-season rolls around are actually a handful for the Leafs to handle because they sort of play this sandpaper style they do have some skill they have a particularly offensively minded back end and they got some goaltending but because i think hockey is going to be so sloppy off the top

the leafs should actually beat them and go with their more skilled lineup and to me cody cc's out rasmus and he's in what do you think about the argument that columbus is the younger team and that's giving them an advantage during a time when uh the older guys have been resting and there might be a little rusty getting back into it and now columbus has these young guys who can just go out there and skate again i disagree with that because it's it's a lazy way of looking at it the that people do because it all it does is looks at the average age of the players on the team it doesn't take into account that their top center is 22 doesn't take into account that their top right winger is 23 and i think their second right winger is 23 and morgan riley is like the old guy

at what 24 25 like sandin is a teenager they got they got a few other young guys in there but like they're more depth guys like jason spezza ruins the whole thing but like how many guys over 30 does this team actually have two jason spezza throws off that curve a little yeah now they got two two guys on the kind of older end but they're all players in their early 20s like if you were to do it by ice time the leafs might be the younger team right like so if it wasn't just average age throughout the lineup you did average age of ice time i don't know how on earth you would calculate that i'm not smart enough uh i'd say it was a lot more even so no i don't buy that at all and if Nick Robertson makes the team then what he cancels out Jason

Spencer there you go so how are you you're you're siding with the Leafs going into this it's such a unique situation that I don't know if there's really a wrong decision they can make I listen if it were up to me I would not put CeCe with Riley um and if it costs Rasmus Sandin a spot in the lineup. Now I'm pissed. I don't think there's any doubt about that.

If CeCe's in there, Sandin is out. No! Like you said, Rosen and Marincin aren't getting in there unless there's an injury. I don't think you're breaking up Paul with Muzzin or Dermot Berry for Sandin.

Dermot Berry should work, and it was ass. Yeah. It was really bad. Travis Dermott, he's such a key player on this team. I swear to God, this guy. What they should look at, potentially, is maybe mixing up the D pairs the way we're talking about the forwards.

Like in certain situations, we throw this line and that line. In certain situations, it should be Riley Muzzin. You know what I mean? That way, you don't have to completely throw Dermott to the Wolves, But I would like to see Dermott on the right side With Riley That allows you to keep Muzzin Hall together And then you can do Barry Sandin

And then Sheldon Keefe tells you We like lefties with A righty And we're not going to mix that up We like our lefty righty Matchups And that's what we're going with I learned it from Babcock

I would be so disheartened Jesse Blake I'd be so sad if that's what he said Oh my god but yeah like Cody see he he can't he can't if we're if we're just going with the most skilled lineup that dude had he scored in his first game as a leaf or sorry second game as a leaf and I want to say he had five points or something in his first month and he's got seven like that dude is a defensive defensive defenseman who can't exactly do the defensive defenseman thing

so i don't understand what we're doing i don't understand i still i don't care if it's july how do you get 4.5 i don't freaking get it i'm excited to see what they do versus montreal so it'll be a good indicator of what they do versus the jackets oh are you ready for it's gonna be the the arguments after the game win or lose are gonna be hilarious because people are going to go sample size all you have is a one game sample size if there is ever a time to act irrationally based off a one game sample it's now it is now look at you cannot base and and this is in defense of pierre engvall uh sort of transitioning into the nick robertson conversation pierre engvall was terrible from basically new year's onward

with him is Jake Muzzin, because he was rehabbing from an injury. It's all very interesting, man. It's very interesting. The last line we have to talk about is the Nick Robertson situation. Do you think he cracks

the lineup in the line that he threw out at practice yesterday, you think it was? Which is Perfoot, Kapanen, and Robertson. Does he take that spot? What do you think? one more time jesse cappinan kerfoot robertson is that going to be a line we see in actual

playoff there isn't a pill on the market that could do what saying those three names together out loud are you joking me nick robertson with alexander kerfoot and casperi cappinan the most water buggy annoying wee line i could ever think of oh it just it makes so much sense it's so perfect that line is the leafs don't have a shutdown line like in the traditional sense they don't have what the ducks had in 2007 where i think it was like sammy paulson and uh rob Niedermeyer and who was the other guy in that line I can't even remember but it was just you know this muck and grinder sort of guy that doesn't really exist anymore so what you need to do is send out a third line that's just straight up better than anyone else's third line and to me

that line absolutely has the potential to do that Kerfoot's not spectacular but he's pretty good and annoying Kapanen not spectacular but he's pretty good and annoying Nick Robertson has spectacular upside and if we're making the argument oh young players get the what about that guy all right what about nick robertson to me it's super exciting he's only turning 19 in september right you can't get younger than that he scored over 50 goals uh man march 7th i was at a peterborough pete's game shook over you know 150 hands that day it's four days before the nba shut down it's crazy but i remember being like wow i'm actually gonna get to see nick robertson in person i wonder if he's gonna score a goal he scored in the first period jesse

he's unreal and i've had people go who's gonna kill penalties he killed penalties and to me having him play with kapanen at even strength i'd be interested to see what they look like killing penalties do you worry about the guy's first nhl game ever versus grown men coming at this stage uh it didn't hurt pk suban you know it didn't hurt uh who else did it was it cam neely i'm like he wouldn't be the first player to ever have his first nhl action be in the playoffs and actually it's going to be a ton of guys by the sounds of it like it could be The Islanders can have a goalie. Kirill Kaprizov for the Wild.

What is it, Alexander Romanov for the Montreal Canadiens could throw a monkey wrench in the whole thing. Imagine Montreal wins three. That's all they got to do is win three, and they knock off Pittsburgh like that. Then we're going to hear some protests about this playoff format. But, you know, Nick Robertson won't be alone. I mean, Rasmus Sandin's not much better off. he hasn't played 30 games yet uh in the nhl i'm not worried about it okay do you have any other

least notes you want to throw out there goalies no least um it's no it's very interesting i think the leafs by the way are i'm putting my tinfoil hat on for this one but i feel like they've been paying attention to what people have been talking about and a bunch of the leafs early highlights in camp were oh my god look at this spectacular goal and 95 of my brain was going oh my god look at this spectacular goal five percent of it was going freddie kind of looks like crap and he did so i feel like the leafs though if you watch the past couple days they've been tweeting like look at this crazy freddie save look at this crazy freddie save now i don't know if that's them just noticing uh-oh we're not posting enough of his saves and he's actually been making saves so

we're making him look worse or if it's an overcorrection or a pr thing or whatever but there's a little thing bubbling under the surface of a potential goalie controversy and i think there's going to be cold goalie controversies throughout the nhl because like i said about sample sizes if freddie is awful in the first game can you give him game two i tell you what if he's bad in game two you can't get game three there's it's a non-option you go with campbell yeah 100 100 you make your apologies to freddie later the reason i'm not too worried about that

right now is because you've only been hearing it from fans who've just watched videos on twitter or the highlights on whatever sports program you know it's not from any of the reporters who are in the building no one is speculating that jack campbell can take this job right now it's just hey the leafs are practicing here's some video of it and then people start being like hey ah that pox just went through his five hole maybe it's well and and the narrative during the season is always so heavily on the amount of games that Frederick Anderson is playing and his workload but forget the fact that he's playing like 75 80 percent of the games that changed after Campbell

joined but he's playing 75 to 80 percent of the games and then add to his workload every single practice he's playing against the Leafs offense behind the Leafs defense yeah that sucks man that's really hard could you see a situation where he plays almost center plays the entire run of playoff games anderson the games are going to be every other day right and if this if this just goes every other day till uh like september how many games is campbell really going to get into well and this is actually a fascinating thing i'm going to look it up on my phone right now to make sure but i think i want to say games four and five for the leafs in this potential series against columbus no even more interesting so it's games three and four are back to back

no i didn't know there was going to be back to backs yep so thursday august 6th is game three here let me let me make sure this is correct game one is sunday august 2nd game two is tuesday august 4th game three is thursday august 6th the next day is game four so if you're a keef do you say hey freddie you've had uh three what is it there'll be four months off you're five five months off you're going like you're playing all these games you can play five games in a row even if one of them is back to that you've had from what i've from what i've heard sheldon keith isn't gonna have to tell him that freddie will tell him like he he likes playing this much and that's been part of the problem i think if freddie really protested and was like

man i'm tired like he wouldn't be in this situation but you'll remember there was a really bad loss against the philadelphia flyers and the leafs had the colorado avalanche the next day uh and again a back-to-back with travel like they had so many times and freddie insisted to Sheldon Keefe I want to play the second half of this back-to-back and it's interesting against a team like Columbus who just produced goalie after goalie after goalie you know so that could be an advantage of Columbus's that they'll be able to throw this fresh quality goalie at you while the Leafs have even if they're getting quality play from Freddie there's no way he's as crisp if he played in a playoff game

the day before. What if game three goes to triple overtime? Yeah. What happens then? Fascinating one. The OT part of it is going to be fun because

say it's a game that goes to triple OT. And it ruins everything. And everything gets fucked. And Rodgers is just pulling their hair out. you're like we had so many broadcast plans and now look triple oz threw it up well and from my perspective right so the it sounds like the leafs are getting a lot of eight o'clock slots which is tough for me because so my plan is to shoot all these at night

um and i'm gonna help out with leo as i can uh i'm able to feed him while i edit or change his diaper while i edit i can take a break from editing and then once the video is done and uploaded then i go to bed and i sleep in but if i go to bed after the game it's 11 o'clock or something like that i'm not getting quality sleep uh because of leo so i'm getting up tired at probably 10 or something like that the video is not up until like four that's not good enough and then the Leafs play again at eight right it's not good enough so I'm gonna be doing my plan is to do night of videos for every LFR um because the other option isn't good enough it's gonna be it's gonna be crazy like I the moment it kicks off is just gonna be a whole other reality like

because there was okay we had regular time and then we had season canceled pandemic time and then we have now this like little build-up and then when it gets going it's just going to be this whole other thing that we've never really experienced at a professional level like we've seen it with March Madness and all that where they're just games all the time but this is literally going to be three major sports going at it from a.m. to p.m. it's so good and the highest intensity of play it's the playoffs like so good it's so good uh you know oh go ahead well i i was talking to someone about that like i'm not complaining this is going to be so fun and i'm really looking forward to it and there's a reason i'm burying my head in my work right now

That's awesome.

He's been out since December with a form of bone cancer. And the prognosis is that he could return in time for the postseason if the Flyers go deep enough, which is just incredible. That's unbelievable. Like it's, it's not even just the fact that, you know, he had to recover from it and everything, but like, I don't know how much, how much wind he lost, you know, his, his ability to breathe, his ability to, um, uh, you know, his muscle mass and, and all that. It's absolutely fascinating, but it's been done before in different forms.

Mario Lemieux's story is absolutely ridiculous if you go back and look at it. He was the best player in hockey, had leukemia, came back, and was the best player in hockey. It was absolutely unbelievable and a wicked story. I mean, there's all sorts of stories of players who were hurt and their season was done that now have this new chance to play and compete for a stanley cup and out of all those amazing stories his has to be the best i think easily you know easily easily um it's unbelievable that the turnaround was so quick

like i i know so little about the uh the disease that he was suffering from but um just the fact that you come back from a form of bone cancer to earn three million dollars with the flyers and then potentially play in the playoffs that's just something to applaud right absolutely and uh speaking of return to injuries uh andreas johnson was on the ice today with uh which is cool supposedly he still can't return until the second round yeah there's a rule the where he's not eligible to play right away even if he was able to but johnson if the leafs win around johnson's back in the lineup which is really cool it is really cool he's a guy who i'm really rooting for for a variety of reasons i just like him as a player but also um going through all 70 of the

leafs games from this past season i don't know if anyone had more of a nightmare year than andreas johnson couldn't get going finally gets going gets hurt can't get going finally gets going gets hurt out for the whole season like these and they're significant injuries and he loses his spot on the first line and he's playing some third line and it's ridiculous so if he's able to get into some games and be effective because remember this was the Marley's playoff MVP the year they won the Calder Cup could be very interesting and lastly the Hart Trophy nominees came out Leon Dreisaitl Nathan McKinnon and Artemi Pernarin who's your pick and why is everybody upset at your tweet from earlier yes so here let me try to find the tweet what i personally love about it is i'm

referring to the heart trophy and i don't even talk about one of the nominees um i said this isn't how it works but best player connor mcdavid best performance leon dry sidle most valuable player nathan mckinnon i need you to point to the lie because there isn't one uh one out of one best performance should have also gone to nathan mckinnon you might be right you're right i gave dry saddle too much credit um because the the guy you gave best performance to plays with the guy you gave best player to there you go so best performance nathan mckinnon the the most amazing thing to me is I think it was both Miko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog were out for a 14 game stretch during that stretch McKinnon had 10 goals 14 assists in 14 games he had 24 points

in 14 games and I think there was at least one overtime winner in there he had like 30 something more points than his next closest teammate that's most valuable player magic number is 43 Nathan mckinnon at 93 points kill mccarr at 50 points that and what's and what's panarin at he was like 20 points right which is spectacular to have 20 more points than your next closest teammate aaron had 95 points uh mika zabinijad had 75 which is incredible it's incredible it's not the same not mckinnon mckinnon had no way the best year to carry that team no and and a lot of people so it's a the heart trophy is spectacular because it's the most valuable player and any player that you don't say should win the heart trophy all of a sudden you're now accusing of

being ass yeah they suck they suck and i got screamed at by a bunch of people going what about panarin he had so many more points than his teammates and he almost dragged them into the playoffs well how about mckinnon had twice more than twice as many points over his second place teammate than panarin did i don't know if i said that correct or whatever and his team was well established in the playoffs mckinnon what panarin did except better a thousand times better and and panarin was dude 95 points in 70 games that's stupid he was unreal um if the rangers were to make the playoffs in 82 games which i think they would have i was one of the people going nope they're on a heater to bandage out it just had a five goal game they're making the damn play out

and uh i believe it was the overtime winners advantage it had to get his fifth was a wicked feed from montemi panarin panarin was amazing deserves to be nominated for most valuable player he's just not my pick to me he was still a top five player in the league this year but he just doesn't he doesn't win and the other player who i got a little bit of heat for people were yelling how don't you add this guy in the conversation connor hellebuck was unreal this year and the jets would have sunk to the bottom of the ocean without him but mckinnon do you subscribe to the argument that dry settle loses points for playing uh not alongside mcdavid they only did that for like a little bit at the beginning of the year the rest of the year he

had his own line but he's still on the same team with the guy who put up 97 points and is the best player in the world draft some points from dry settle because i definitely do you know it's funny it may it my instinct is to do that but did people ever take points away from wayne gretzky for playing with mark messier did people ever take points away from mark messier for playing with Wayne Gretzky did people ever take points away from Mario Lemieux for playing with Jaromir Jager did people ever take points away from Jaromir Jager for playing with Mario Lemieux do people take points away from Crosby because he has Malkin do people take points away from Malkin because he has Crosby you know what I mean so it seems a little unfair to take points away

from Leon Dreisaitl who over the last two seasons has been legitimately great and when McDavid was out he was legitimately great the only exception I'll make is in the Crosby Malkin argument I think people a hundred percent don't give Malkin the credit that he deserves because he plays with Sidney Crosby well and he's got this reputation that when Crosby gets hurt he becomes better exactly right so it'd be to Dreisaitl's credit I think the voices talking about that would be much louder if when mcdavid got hurt he turned into a pumpkin but he put the oilers on his back and they were good they were good without mcdavid which is not something anyone thought they were uh capable of but it is of note that nathan mckinnon was one of the best players in the

league and had 43 more points than his next closest teammate preposterous stupid that's most valuable player the award is not best player you could argue he was that too though but he was definitely most valuable like taylor hall the year we gave it to taylor hall we maybe got a little too overzealous with the scraping into the playoffs and you give it to the best player the devils don't make the playoffs without taylor hall that year but mckinnon this year did an even better version of what hall did the year he won it mckinnon was the most valuable player in the nhl by far oh we're gonna agree on that there you go and artemi panarin sucks yeah we're not saying he didn't have the uh the spectacular season and blew everybody away and

it's probably one of the best free agent signings like ever like we're not saying any of those things aren't true it's just mckinnon is the most valuable play yeah you know who's feeling good about that is rangers ownership we gave all we gave this guy all this money and all he got nominated for the heart okay good and that's a team who remember that letter they put out to be like hey we're gonna tank for a little bit and then all of a sudden like a year and a half what is it two years two years something like that they've they've done a masterful job masterful uh do you have any other notes anything around the world around the sporting landscape around uh your life uh my life your life steve's angle um the road just
