Starting point is 00:03:10 at pmcfwalk.ca Hello everybody. Listen, I want to start today's show with a shout out to Joe Bowen. We're not getting into the Leafs right away because let's be honest, they're not the top story. But Joe Bowen should be. And you know, we've Obviously, we started here as Leaf fans.
Starting point is 00:03:40 We still are Leaf fans. The show is sort of the NHL through a few Leaf fans' eyes. Joe had his last game in Toronto yesterday after 44 years of calling the Toronto Maple Leafs. Phenomenal play caller, heart and soul sort of guy. And 44 years is a really, really, really long time. And there he is. You know, they gave him a round of a, sorry, standing ovation at Scotiabank Arena last night. jesse you were there uh what was the emotion like it was definitely emotional everybody pre-game
Starting point is 00:04:13 that was the thing they're talking about they let joe bowen do the walk-in with the players where they take the shot of their outfits when they walk in joe bowen did one of those which was awesome he was clearly he was around the team all year obviously and they had the joe bowen night earlier in the year and then now is just the the big send-off at home and he has one more game to go They are sending him to Ottawa to do that game, something Rodgers has not done since COVID, where they send the radio broadcast on the road. They're sending Joe Bowen there for the final broadcast of his career.
Starting point is 00:04:44 I love that. So he's obviously in the broadcast booth. The press row is right underneath. How close were you to this? I'm a little bit over on the other side. I'm where the TV guys are more than the radio side. So you can hear Forsling laughing? Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Yeah, yeah. I can hear him. When he gets excited, I can hear him. 11-goal game. Hey, hey, what do you say? Oh, yeah. Man, that was still one of my favorite interviews we ever did. We never got the chance to interview Joe Bowen,
Starting point is 00:05:10 although I did when I was with the, I did the Leafs podcast for a couple years. And very, very nice man. His son, Sean, was on there, too. He also works for Maple Leaf Sports. And Joe just deserves all the love and all the shout-outs. I'm just sad that they never got him a damn cup. Yep.
Starting point is 00:05:28 He did quit playing hockey because he wanted to be a goalie, He wanted to be the next Johnny Bauer and I think did what all of us. Listen, if we could, if any of us were great athletes, we would much rather be playing the game than talking about the game. Right. Like that's kind of the that's the secret thing about media. Joe understood that it wasn't going to happen for him. And so he ended up in the booth and did a pretty damn good job. And I thought John Tavares saying, yeah, I remember listening to him growing up and then to have and then to play here with him calling like that special. And his call of Johnny Toronto.
Starting point is 00:06:00 He got one last one in on yesterday's game, which was awesome. You mentioned his family. I think outside of the hockey stuff, he's such a family man. A couple of his children work there at MLSC and around the team. And he loves his family. And they were all there last night to celebrate him. I know they're all there on Jobo and night earlier in the season. Incredible family man.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Yes, absolutely. I think that to him is probably the most important legacy. I want to get back to he's he's a he's a quote unquote throwback. I want to get back to excitable play calls like his. You know, there's been this thing and it happened in radio and in television where back in the day, like, you know, MTV in the 80s or, you know, radio in the 80s. There's a lot of this going on. And I understand why we got away from calls like that. But what it did do was it also meant people kind of misunderstood the rules and it meant just like don't get excited about anything. and when you have a local announcer who is that excited about the game i think the fact that we have lost that on television i think the fact that we have lost that in a lot of cases on radio if there's even a radio broadcast for some of these teams i think it's sad and i really want to get back to like when i watch steve's uh streams i'm like well there's a guy who's a local guy who's excited well i'm not saying you're play calling everything because you're not who lost it us
Starting point is 00:07:21 leafs fans that's it yeah everyone else has their own guy and their own fun it's just just us i know a lot of canada is like we're sick of the leafs and we're sick of them being on national broadcasts and honestly us too uh yeah we'd like a local crew we'll join you on that picket line alberta and others yeah yeah we want we want it too man yeah yeah this uh like i'm not i'm not even saying like cuffbird and simpson and whatever do a bad job no they have to be level they have to know yeah they're doing a good job yeah what their job is uh which is a broadcast crew that doesn't have license to do what jack hedwards did of course you know and he went down like he was shot maroon fat fat maroon i forgot about oh yeah no you have to apologize for that one i don't know
Starting point is 00:08:10 if i want that on my broadcast sir hand sir hand all right how about ovechkin i forget that guy's name but like a guy from buffalo that has since passed who had rick jenner rick jenner what a great play call amazing absolutely yeah so that's and and by the way john forsland was for i think 25 years the carolina guy uh which is crazy they were spoiled i think briefly seattle and then amazon yeah that's i think he might do both even i'm not even sure he's got multiple jobs that guy um so i went to four different no five different bars last night before i could find one with the game on whoa in toronto on front street that has something to do with the game being broadcast on amazon yeah yeah yeah that's why i brought it up yeah but i i just couldn't believe it but it's
Starting point is 00:08:54 your your if you're a sports bar let's assume were some of them sports bars it was boston pizza loose moose jack asters went across the street to kelly's landing until my very smart friend jesse blake was like go to real sports stupid yeah i just didn't want to walk that far oh that's so much further well yeah like a whole city block i was hot you're on the other side of like front street yeah if you're at the jackassers which is kind of right there and i had to cross and go south and jesse i had already gotten my steps in it's too much it's too much low mo cardio yeah i got it in i want to do uh also my second shout out our second shout out is going to be the Buffalo Sabres,
Starting point is 00:09:38 who not only are in the playoffs, but won the effing division. Do you understand? Won the division. Them making it at all from where they were is a miracle. Them winning the division is preposterous. It's crazy. It's great.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Now, the thing is, is that we're still not sure what they're going to play. Right. But it could be Ottawa. It's Ottawa or Boston, which I like an Ottawa thing because i like the two younger teams going at it like boston buffalo i guess i guess i know the pond hockey uh reputation that buffalo has but based on their record since uh yarmo came on
Starting point is 00:10:18 board are we not grossly overthinking this they're they're the favorite whoever they play they are like well they should be i mean they wildly the favorite they earn it yeah they've won did you hear julian on the cj show today uh no i haven't had a chance he's basically open i was like damn that's a bold take he was like i see a path for the senators to get to the conference finals and i was like they got it the goaltending's got to stay hot that's the thing with them does he have ottawa playing carolina or buffalo we don't know he knows he said i can see a path he said more more metro leaning than atlantic leaning there's we've seen too many things in recent memory tampa in 2019 and boston in 23 um like i'd believe any outcome hey they broke the record uh
Starting point is 00:11:06 oh they broke the record harder uh that's that's nuts yeah they want to combine three games yep those two um i would believe anything but i think if you're not picking the sabers you're probably overthinking it can i can i talk to the losers for a second yeah don't don't talk about us like that the losers out there who still want to give John Cooper the Jack Adams can we put that to bed now that he has been defeated because Tampa defeated all season long they're like ah Tampa look at them run away with the Atlantic legacy Jack Adams for John Cooper best coach he's missed so many defensemen all year long and look how well they're playing they got beat they did shoot lindy ruff deserves that jack adams always said john cooper mediocre no we know how good he is
Starting point is 00:11:59 he has stanley cups that tell us how good he is he doesn't need this jack adams because he doesn't shorten seasons mickey mouse are you on are you on john cooper's side no yeah i'm on john cooper's side i mean not for jack adams this year necessarily just he is the year in year out best coach in the league but does he paul maurice probably has a does he ever get something to say in the conversation does he ever get one i he didn't win it for winning 62 games like how does he get it he just does it like the jack adams should be the not john cooper award that's what we should rename it he doesn't need it and he doesn't know he doesn't that's not what the award's about the award isn't to award the best head coach just like how the heart trophy isn't
Starting point is 00:12:41 for the best player in the game among who has the most skill that's not what the trophy is about It's about the guy who out-coached expectations and surprised us with his ability that he's able to get out of the players. We were all convinced the Buffalo Sabres were bad. Their general manager got fired because we thought they were so bad. And Lindy Ruff turned this thing around. Last year was a pretty similar collection of players. And whatever he's doing now with the players, he's able to turn this team into one of the best teams in the world. I disagree with that.
Starting point is 00:13:13 i think kevin adams uh turned this team around by not being there man it's still the weirdest phenomenon like maybe one day we'll hear more like if you're the sabers i imagine you don't want a distraction but whenever their season ends who knows maybe it ends in june yeah um i would love to find out about the you can't tell me there wasn't uh a near unprecedented vibe shift there needs to be like i don't know if you guys remember this article but it's one of the ones that stands out in my mind it's like one of the craziest articles i've ever read when paul fenton got fired in minnesota yeah mike russo wrote just this scathing piece he put him on a pike it was outside the castle paul fenton then went on to be an advisor for the florida panthers
Starting point is 00:13:57 but um he's not a gm i guess and i think i would love to know i nobody's has anybody done like an expose on what the hell happened there like i would i need to know and there's a lot of buffalo media there's a lot of buffalo reporters i'm waiting for one of them to give me like the full here's what happened and here's why it changed and here's why the players felt better immediately when when they knew yarmo was like hilariously everybody kind of knew kevin adams was fired but they couldn't fire him because yarmo kekalainen was at a funeral back home in finland right that's right which is not hilarious but you know what i mean yes like it was bizarre kismet timing whatever i think i need a i need to know what went on there it can't just be that they started winning
Starting point is 00:14:39 because kevin was gone there has to be something i'm willing to give the credit to coaching and that the coaching staff is able to get the best out of the players the coach kevin adams hired oh true i i don't think that's that's how it works at all but i don't know i don't know why you guys point adams sorry no i'm just i don't know why you guys are so reluctant to just not give lindy russell credit oh no no no no no i think adams a joke uh since the olympic break the buffalo sabers are the best team in the national hockey league i think we kind of all assumed that since december 9th they're the best team in the national hockey league but going back to the olympic break part of it they're 18 4 and 2 and the tampa bay lightning in that span are 11
Starting point is 00:15:22 or 13 11 and 2 only the 14th best record in the national hockey league 500 they've clearly taken a step back from where they were from october through the break and post break they are just middle of the pack in terms of the entire league and i think that should also be taken to consideration that buffalo is the most consistent team in this entire league and they are getting a division title out of it john cooper should win coach of the year in the ahl like for what he did with tampa and all their injuries they should just give it to him i don't care who actually is the best coach in the ahl and buffalo also dealt with a lot of injuries they did man games lost i think florida leads it followed by vancouver and buffalo's third yeah they're cheating it was
Starting point is 00:16:05 josh norris yeah that's cheating that is cheating a little bit because that's just free square man games lost yeah as a part of the man games lost is michael kesselring um that was the big get in the jj paturka trade and the throw-in josh stone played 81 games and had 51 points that is really listen kevin abs man elite trade not bad this season they talked about um the canucks rangers trade uh jt miller like a really pronounced lose lose trade yes like both teams are worse for it is the paturka deal an example of a trade that made both teams better utah wasn't in the playoffs now they are buffalo wasn't in the playoffs now they are i mean and that is in theory what a good trade should be yeah and i thought like okay even if don't is incredible
Starting point is 00:16:54 sabers probably get their ass kicked on this deal and it's gone pretty well yeah yeah i think it's a um it's a very it's a great time and i can't wait to to see that arena just explode again that first sabers goal is gonna be crazy i know that on the secondary market by the way some of the tickets are going for like 10 grand what yeah and people are like this is crazy and i'm like you know what i sort of see what first off i see why scalpers do anything because they're scalpers but i also see why there's just that much interest i mean you you got to think about it if you had a baby the day that they got eliminated from the last playoffs that kid is uh grade nine like it's it's just shaves yeah it's it's it it's a long long long time i remember when the
Starting point is 00:17:37 leafs made it in for the first time in like 10 years and the tickets were 10 15 000 up close on the on the bench and that sort of thing you know i feel like um the nhl has forgotten how great unless you're old older like us uh in your late 30s you've forgotten what that building was like my own personal hell oh it's off if i live the kind of life that that gets me there dominic hasik will be satan and the soundtrack will be the sabers goal horn not the from td garden no not annoying enough what's what's the do the sabers one like it just sounds like a robotic damn buffalo oh my god well um i don't miss it uh it will be also and this is noteworthy just for us the first buffalo sabers playoff game
Starting point is 00:18:33 in the entirety of the Steve Dangle podcast. Holy. When was the last one? 14 years ago. Wow. We've never, we started just after they got eliminated. We have never in the entire time
Starting point is 00:18:48 we've been on the air seen a Buffalo Sabres playoff game. That's, can't wrap my head around that. How many people just learned that this show has been around for 14 years? I think a lot of people. A lot of people are like, hey, yeah, I found you guys.
Starting point is 00:19:01 You guys started what, 2019, 2020? funny i was like no that's what you found us we'd been going for a solid six seven years at that point oh you're just doing it and you weren't listening i i gotta find them screaming at the wall into the void i gotta find them afterwards but there's these two sabers fans uh i found on tiktok that if you love dudes naming players oh if you love that kind of content that's extremely your shit i love dudes naming players and they did drought sabers like sabers that define the drought oh oh man some names real good stuff just a plethora of goalies uh matt molson uh olson yeah billy leno was the reason i brought this up because he was a saber and apparently
Starting point is 00:19:45 he scored i think it was the ot winner for the flyers against the sabers the last time the sabers were in the playoffs billy leno wow yeah i can't wrap my head around it well you know uh listen uh we don't know who they're gonna play uh the lightning did win last night against Detroit but what locked in um will lock this in was obviously them winning in overtime right so that that secured Buffalo's thing so that's great uh do you guys have anything else we'd like to add on Buffalo because I just felt like you know we got to give them another shout out that's you did not only did you make the playoffs you freaking won the division over like a monster like Tampa elite regular season team I still have questions about Tampa's postseason
Starting point is 00:20:26 given how the first round went last year I think that's fair plus injuries uh Montreal on the rise in a big way right detroit at the top of the east two months ago you know this is a this is a this is a great story i think it's crazy that in the last calendar year maybe a little bit more than that last calendar month you could argue the sabers on paper got their ass kicked in two trades like two substantial trades dylan cousins is a horse for ottawa josh norris is great for the sabres when he's in the lineup which he very has not been um and then the peterka for a defenseman who essentially has not played for you and a kid that you hope has upside on that's a that's a crime scene on paper yeah and i wonder and here they are better than ever is is yarmulke gonna
Starting point is 00:21:20 be able to keep it up uh or are or was firing kevin adams the worst thing they ever did you're almost barely done in terms of trades and transactions adam you mentioned detroit shall i bring up something about detroit do it that i wanted to bring up because i was i was sent this video from us because last episode you decided to not go in on the detroit red wings you decided to just talk about how you think they're gonna make the playoffs next year and you've guaranteed that but this is well i want to i did not guarantee that i think they are but i need to see what their summer is like no i think you pretty much i'll lock it in in october thank you or september okay so now you're walking that back so you didn't have to walk back this take
Starting point is 00:22:00 however from september when we were doing our season previews because you were very out on the yizer plan and the red wings so this is what you said at the time about that eiser plan now buddy i so somebody had tweeted you and been like how you feel they had they had a hot start in october they had a very hot start in october and people were getting on you about the hot start because you were so out on the eyes of the Jays are deep in the playoffs because I'm wearing a Jays jersey. Yes. Oh, I was wondering. Yeah, I was mid playoffs. And here's what you said. Don't know how many times I need to tell Red Wings fans. You can tell me Red Wings make the playoffs this year and Red Wings fans can come at me and they can dunk on me. How long has Steve
Starting point is 00:22:36 Eisenman been there? That's right. Since before Tampa won its first cup with Samkos, right? So we're talking about five years since he left Tampa to come here. And this will be year six. so if you guys make the playoffs this year it's still a failure of the eiser plan it's great for the team but it's still the eiser plan has already failed and so the reality of the situation is again it's october and i've seen this movie with the red wings before i got the same shit in october and november 2023 and i was right hey justin hall's pretty good isn't he guys jesse One month of good Leafs hockey after, say, five year in Detroit's case, 10 year playoff absence would be enough to be on my ass five years into the Iser plan. I think it's a little early to be buying your playoff tickets for that guy.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Oh, I don't think you buy your little Caesars playoff tickets right now. Yeah, but it's fair to say they're looking decent right now. And then Adam just they didn't look decent. adam just digging in with an adamantium shovel just just going for it how do you feel well i was right i was right i mean march hits the last four years you we ran the graphic last last episode and again last episode like my thing was not oh yeah f the red wings blah blah blah like they they they did more this year than they've done in any of the years they were up at the top of the division the olympics hit and they never get their mojo back and dylan larkin gets hurt
Starting point is 00:24:10 dylan larkin yeah man that happened i know but he's their best player like okay but then but then he came back and they were still bad right they were never able to get it back on track no i i do wonder what happens if forget larkin being hurt i do wonder what happens if you don't take two and a half weeks off when you're feeling hot like that that's yeah there's some you know like john gibson i like john gibson as a goalie i think he's a very good goalie he had a good three months three four months this year um what happens when you're older and you you know when we wake up now steven now that we're both 38 you get creaks right my hotel room has uh baseball in it baseball or lacrosse ball don't travel without it that's right my own larkin by the
Starting point is 00:24:51 way played 82 games last year and 74 games this year he missed eight games like that's not an excuse i mean if they win like one of those games they're in or two couples or still in at least Yeah, so I don't know. Listen, I was right, but I take no joy in it. Bullshit! I don't take any joy. I take joy in the Ducks.
Starting point is 00:25:15 That's my take. He's lying to you. No, I'm on Red Wing's bad side. These guys are the Warwick side. I know what heartbreak looks like and feels like. I can't do this. No, these are the Ducks
Starting point is 00:25:28 in the upside down. the the duck side now yeah adam might not say it but madda would which is reverse adam that's that's what that's what the ducks are they are the reverse red wings you were right about both adam and a worse man than you would tap dance on any of the doubters of your pristine opinions but look at you all benevolent well listen it was a crazy year and i think uh detroit fans deserve a little bit of grace but i don't think here's what i don't think is gonna happen detroit fans this year got really like oh you guys are all fucked this is our division now i don't think that's gonna happen next year even if they get out to a screaming start they i think detroit fans now
Starting point is 00:26:16 are so are so like not sure about this that they're they're not gonna believe it until game 82 next year uh a feeling that i can relate to 100 now on the eiser plan thing okay uh do you so freach did mention on uh 32 thoughts i think it was that potentially steve eiserman might be tired in this there was some sort of hint that potentially maybe stevie walks away what do you think about that it's literally the only way he leaves the red wings you can't fire Steve Eisenman I was thinking that Shanahan like when I made that take Shanahan imagine it taking Shanahan five years to make the playoffs
Starting point is 00:26:56 or not make the playoffs he'd have been gone Eisenman no come Steve yeah but that was it that they were he made it in year I think three or four because there was the Randy Carlisle Peter Horacek here then there's the first Babs
Starting point is 00:27:12 no he got there I want to say 13 14 then there was maybe it was 14 end of 14 I think end of 14 yeah 14 15 15 16 so they were very bad very on purpose year three he made it so that's that's why i'm saying like by year five year five is roughly when we expected them to start making the playoffs yeah the first year was very surprising um it yeah the only way eisenman leaves detroit is if he does it himself oh jesse if you were steve eisenman would you just say i i can't do it anymore no no would you say yeah this is you don't give up a job like that there's
Starting point is 00:27:54 only 32 of them in the league you know as long as they'll have you you keep trying you keep kicking the can his career as a player began this way it did like that's a really good point that's why brendan shanahan kept the core four together he said that so many times so steve if you're gonna bring that up then you better back up brendan shanahan's decision to keep marner and i'm bringing it up i didn't say it was wise because we heard that time and time again yeah no like oh if we just stick to it with steve as no what changed is nick lidstrom the russian five keep it going and shanahan lived that and he said if you keep committing to your plan eventually it's going to work out no i think if you take a bad team and add enough players to make
Starting point is 00:28:46 a good team then add enough players to make a great team then add enough players to make a championship worthy team that is a good thing to do but you could not do that because of the salary cap and you refuse to pivot here's a team that i would like to i would like to have it it's not going to be today but i'd like to have this team on on blast at some point okay oh and then we're going to go to our segment because we have a segment to get and one small point about Detroit after okay give me the give the small point about Detroit first the 2020 season Detroit Red Wings fans always bring this up that was the season Detroit did bottom out they finished last in the league yeah and they did not get the first overall pick they didn't get the lottery luck so the if
Starting point is 00:29:27 we're talking about the rebuild and for Eisenman it kind of kicks off around the 2020 season which is going into after that a wonky draft of the 21 season so the context there of how many years he really is into the rebuild is about four or five so with that context do you give him a little more rope or are you saying hey you've still been here for so much time you should have picked up you should have had a little bit more progress than this uh no i don't and and i'll tell you why uh that year in 2020 red wings got the fourth overall pick and red wings like to bring up oh woe is us we didn't win the lottery kate first pick was alexi lafreniere you want him no okay moving on next pick was quentin byfield you want him no okay moving on third pick was
Starting point is 00:30:17 tim stutzler okay fine i'll give you that but then you got lucas raymond fourth yeah you did they actually did extraordinarily well you out of those four you got the first overall pick out of the stutes is pretty good raymond how old is raymond raymond at the same age i assume 23 23 plenty of time to grow plenty of time to win that plenty of time jesse would have traded tavaris at his peak for lucas raymond i did in a video game many years ago he don't ask me to do the math but i believe he has more goals per game than stutzla or they're very similar i'm just saying it's the story's not written no the story's not written but like that whole way about the draft lottery like stop it first of all you're not owed a draft lottery win that and hey we know
Starting point is 00:31:04 that yeah like it it well i mean they did win in 2016 but like it also might not have asked buffalo that well and then they won it three times what i'm saying is you're not guaranteed and you actually considering you had the fourth overall pick made out like bandits and i don't know what else you want i'm on that side as well like i think steve eisman if his name isn't steve eisman probably is fired this offseason because of you think they'll fire him no if his name isn't steve i would have been fired and i think because of what the lack of success there and i think somebody else should come in there and finish the job but i don't think it's going to happen oh my god hey i wanted i just want to do this quick one one day we're
Starting point is 00:31:48 going to have to talk about these guys last year there was an article written in the athletic about this team and it was the blank team because i'm not going to say who it is the team that parody forgot and that would have been the columbus blue jackets oh i definitely thought you were going to say the same a columbus blue jackets fan which is It's real Danny Heatley, but it's not the Danny Heatley account of old. This is a Blue Jackets fan. Since 2000, Blue Jackets, six playoff appearances with one series win. Lowest winning percentage in the league at 43.7%.
Starting point is 00:32:23 Most losses in the NHL. Well, their winning percentage is, which is 889 since then. 13 head coaches, zero cups, zero finals, zero conference finals. Lowest points percentage at 484. That's a team where I'm like, when are you going to do it? so okay last year they almost made it and it was herculean and incredible and admirable and they fell just shy this year this year they almost made it and it was herculean and they fell short well so their last in the conference right they fired dean evison bring in um rick bonus
Starting point is 00:33:02 and you go on this crazy run and you're in the playoffs and i remember a similar conversation about a team that wasn't supposed to make it but was there in the 16 17 leafs and i remember the conversation being like if they don't make the playoffs is it a big deal and my argument was yeah because it means they blew it they were there they're in it hooray and if you lose it you lost it that's how i look at this blue jackets team it's not the scrappy team that fell short it's an excellent team that blew it yeah yep well i was i was rooting for them i don't know if they're excellent but well they sure blew it they looked at for months yeah they looked at detroit that's the thing so did detroit even longer sorry no no please columbus is their
Starting point is 00:33:55 misfortune since they've been a franchise since 2000 2001 i think their first year it's verging on the territory of the record book of north american pro sports like they're they're not just mediocre in terms of the nhl landscape it's all the four major leagues the sacramento kings are probably challenging them for the title since 0607 i believe the sacramento kings have made the playoffs once and they have zero series wins the columbus blue jackets are right in line with them in terms of lack of success as a franchise as a whole in the 2000s and i feel really bad for blue jackets fans because there's a lot of good ones out there but they are an irrelevant franchise in terms of winning and not just the whole point right which is the whole point of playing these
Starting point is 00:34:45 sports yeah it's so crazy that like yarmo looked like the coughing baby and then turned into hydrogen bomb the second he got to buffalo it's man if you want to go down memory lane if memory lane was made of nothing but despair go back and look at some of the early year draft picks of the columbus blue jackets like pain the the echoes of some of those picks can still be felt today like you can screw up a draft a series of drafts so bad that your franchise maybe never recovered since being a franchise they have one series win it oh no that is the lightning series in the 1819 season that doesn't count let me get there sorry sorry that's why i said one real series win and then if you want to count the qualifying round in the 1920 bubble season that's when they beat
Starting point is 00:35:39 the Leafs you can add two to that but they've been around since 2000 and that's 26 years two series wins is not enough they beat the Sacramento Kings I guess uh if you if you go from 0607 onwards I can't remember many a trade track video I made where I was like Columbus made out like bandits here yeah it's well that's years and now yarmo who ran a lot of that is in buffalo this is the story of how not to do expansion uh like where you have to you have to have winning at some point yeah when you expand to these markets yeah like seattle you need to win eventually yeah columbus you should win within 26 years you should consider winning yep all right yeah anyway hey let's uh
Starting point is 00:36:30 let's take a pause and get to our toyota segment everybody loves a power plan when it comes to power and capability nothing delivers quite like the toyota tacoma so this segment's going to be about in this last week before the playoffs start who reminds you the most of that 6400 pounds of towing capacity the most powerful tacoma ever well i'm glad you brought up the playoffs because i'm gonna talk about a player who's nowhere near them um because it's it's an underdog story this guy was incredible in rookie camp he had a good preseason sustained a long-term injury and was kind of out of sight out of mind came back and decided to fight everyone and was rewarded with a two-year nhl contract and that's landon sim whoa who just did not play in the league this year guy who did
Starting point is 00:37:15 not play in the league this year but he signed an nhl contract and no one can ever take that away from him and he plays like i was gonna say a honey badger but i suppose i should say the toyota tacoma just bashing just gronking his way through professional hockey will not be denied jesse blake amongst players that are going to the playoffs so players on teams that are going to the playoffs clayton keller leads the league in points in april he's got 12.6 goals uh four goals sorry eight assists and he is the driving force on that line he has with schmaltz and kraus And they're probably like the JBL speaker and the towing thing on the end of the line. But he's the Toyota that's really driving things.
Starting point is 00:38:01 And the Toyota in Utah driving on those mountains would be beautiful. But just some love to a team that has been underrated all season long because of the other great stories we have in the league of the Penguins and the Flyers and the Sabres. The Utah Mammoth are going to playoffs. And Clayton Keller has been a huge part of that. And he's been steady all season long. I'm going to just be at the right time. Of course.
Starting point is 00:38:22 Yeah, I'm going to quickly. i'm gonna jump in with somebody and this actually works really well with our next segment um but it is i'm bending the rules it's not a player it's a coach oh richard talkic rick rick talk it took the philadelphia flyers from nowheresville and mid like even three months ago flyers fans were like this guy sucks keeps calling our best player fat that they're on cloud nine right now they still they still hate this man yeah and he was a long time generationally good flyer as well uh during his play to rick tocket man i just want to shout him out all day long what the flyers have done this year is pretty incredible as well in a sea of incredible stories and rick tocket played like
Starting point is 00:39:05 the toyota tacoma drives when he played so i just thought it fit you know that's valid so here's the deal we want you to go to uh your local ontario dealer during red tag days it's march through may So it's been April right now. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca hey so uh we just we should probably mention that our playoff bracket from spark is ready to go you
Starting point is 00:41:09 got to download the spark app or you can click the link in the description uh but over 10 000 people signed up last year and we have a huge huge prize which has not been revealed yet but basically jesse it's a bracket challenge if they didn't participate last year explain how it's different from any other bracket challenge it's it's our playoff bracket challenge it's just that the playoffs seedings won't be set until thursday so we want to give you time to sign up for the bracket so you hit the link in the description and then friday will reveal all of the prizing because we have a very special big one for the top winner and then some other couple bonus prizes but yeah sign up on the spark app hit the link in the description so i uh i'm kind of excited for
Starting point is 00:41:47 this uh and we will go through our playoff predictions i think what friday on the show yeah well we can do a quick bracket for all of us beautiful yeah love it um also steve dangle on a national tv show which is why our schedule has been a bit weird i know a lot of people were pretty pumped about the friday morning drop or monday morning drop right um i don't think we're making that into a habit but uh but it was nice for a lot of people and i'm glad you enjoyed it steve you have survived another day i'm as surprised as you are so for people that don't know it canada reads is literally it's a show that runs on youtube and then on cbc gem yes and free for anybody to watch but what's cool about it is you're championing a book but it becomes
Starting point is 00:42:31 kind of like survivor uh it's exactly like survivor or big brother or whatever um so it's five people myself morgan book elamaya tail feathers uh josh telecruz and tegan quinn um yesterday josh telecruz his book foe josh from blues clues yes and also um he was in i believe the broadway production of aladdin and his role was aladdin um and uh today elamaya tell feathers uh book a minor chorus by billy ray belcourt um was voted off so what's left is uh morgan books it's different this time by joss richard who you know um tegan quinn championing uh uh the cure for drowning by logan paler sorry i've been up for a very long time and went to bed very late because of all this and i am still
Starting point is 00:43:32 championing searching for terry punch out by tyler hellert so there's like a whole debate jesse you watch this what was your big takeaway i was shocked by how cutthroat it is it wasn't what i was anticipating so the host will set up and it'll be like okay this segment is for you to talk about why you don't like each book and then they go around the circle and everybody gets what like 30 seconds to a minute two minutes sometimes depends to talk about why you don't like each book and i was like oh my goodness this is canadian television we are not supposed to be mean to each other we're supposed to be saying sorry all the time but you guys just go at each other and it's a really good show today was the nightmare that i expected it to be honestly like so i watched
Starting point is 00:44:16 uh i was told like implored you have to it's not good enough that you've read the books and you've taken notes on the books you have to watch at least last season to know what the vibe of the show is like i watched episode one from last year and it's five books rapid fire blah blah blah blah and i'm just oh my god and there's no time to talk about any of them every panelist gets introduced that's five introductions every book gets introduced that's five video packages and then by the end of that however much time is taken up is how much time you have to defend or no and then you have 60 seconds each to be like my book good defend it yeah there's another five plus intros and banter that's 10 so how much time do you actually have to debate i don't remember
Starting point is 00:45:06 anything i said yesterday i can barely tell you some of the stuff i said today i i keep hearing i was good you did get a shout out from ron mclean today i got a shout out from ron mclean today so today what's different about today is now there's fewer books they don't have to introduce you they don't have to introduce your book so there's more time to talk about your book and champion it which means there's more time for everyone else at the table to be like no so ron mcclain because everybody got a special little message from some sort of celebrity or whatever max kerman did one of them and ron mcclain did yours and he said that when he was on he was a dangling a participle because he got he got eliminated really quickly and he wasn't he didn't think his performance was
Starting point is 00:45:51 very good so then he said this year you are a participating dangle i ron mcclain did and you can watch that on the youtube channel i collabed it on on my channel and i just threw my head back because i'm like ron mcclain ron mcclain me yeah it was awesome you know what if we were on hockey night in canada and he was throwing up puns like that we'd have to be in the like i feel like you know the two muppets that are in the uh who are what are their names that are up in the corner oh uh sadler and stadler and waldorf yeah i feel like we'd be like oh ron that's terrible i give him
Starting point is 00:46:23 like grades so in the description i'll link to episode one and two you can watch them just for free on youtube and then 10 a.m tomorrow is episode three and then thursday is the finale right every day so i'm gonna be on the finale finale no matter what
Starting point is 00:46:39 so what's gonna happen tomorrow is one of two things uh either i'm gonna move on to the finale and then i have to continue defending my book or uh i get eliminated and then i join elamiah and josh as uh free agents so the people who vote for who's eliminated or i guess at the end it'll be who wins um uh the the people at the table are the only ones who matter there's not like some big audience vote it's not like a popularity vote um you vote for what you think is deserves to move on to the next round i hope you win it'll be fun i'll watch you tomorrow 10 a.m and then i would also like to
Starting point is 00:47:21 win thursday 10 a.m hey hey hey low-hanging fruit i know what it's like to move on past the second round hey oh yeah you did it come on you did it it's the first come on yesterday i was like not me please not me just for the memes i could have gone out today and it would have been fine please not first round all leaf fan goes out in the first round no no so you made it past the second round before the least did i'm happy to be in the conference finals wow well done steve in this era this isn't what we wanted but it's but we're happy for you as in it isn't what we wanted because we would have preferred the leafs to be more successful it's not you right it's us got it oh and um something coming is uh i did an interview with uh beloved children's tv character
Starting point is 00:48:13 on cbc gary the unicorn uh i did an interview with a puppet beautiful right um i want to i want to as we move back to hockey here i want to i want to shout someone out someone who's taken a fair bit of guff on this podcast oh who's played 820 games in the nhl who's a rugged strong right shot defenseman who will play his first playoff game after 13 seasons that's crazy against sydney crosby ladies and gentlemen rasmus ristolainen is finally going to the playoffs when he joined the buffalo sabers it was on the tail of their previous playoff year and he's been traded so many times and never traded except for the one time between buffalo and philadelphia he's uh quite the trade it was quite the trade but this guy has been almost traded a million times he uh
Starting point is 00:49:06 he's been an analytics uh nightmare and then actually kind of a recovery in the last few years i believe his first our first full season as a show was his first full season in the nhl and he's making the playoffs for the first time and i think it's pretty neat that uh rasmus and the philadelphia flyers are going to make it it's a crazy story and uh it all started or it all happened because rick talkett put out tyson forester in the shootout who has not taken one shootout shot this year he scores the goal on brandon bussey last night against carolina to put them ahead and then dan vladar stands tall and actually shuts it down on the last shot and that's it darren later man he's he's been unbelievable i remember coming into the season
Starting point is 00:49:54 And I'm like, Dan Vladar. Me too. And we were looking at the depth chart. I'm like, your starter is Dan Vladar. He's been incredible. He's been really good. Vladar, Zgris, and Christian Dvorak, according to Kevin Kurz from The Athletic, each had their best respective season of their careers. And Zgris had 67 points, 26 of them goals.
Starting point is 00:50:18 That's a career high. And Dvorak was signed out of Montreal, has a career high 51 points, signed the extension in January. which were people and myself included went really right and and then porter martone has kind of come in and x factor right uh i think he was ready for the nhl a year ago it sure looks like it anyway he's got eight points in eight games three goals five assists and big goals too man and pairing him with mitch kov who has obviously had his ups and downs you mean fat vay well you mean fat vay mitch kov okay yeah yeah no he looked good too okay they're rick yeah i just call you um it's to think of where this flyer season could have gone and where it
Starting point is 00:50:59 looked like it was going like roughly when that super awkward talk it interview came out where he's in the concourse of the building and there's mitch kov jerseys behind him while he's talking about this player and they basically haven't lost jesse the the the the badness that steve was referring to are the 14 games before the olympic shutdown where the flyers were again this is right before the olympic shutdown can either of you give me a guess on the record 14 games give me five eight and one six seven and two I mean, I'm games are worse than both of you. Imagine three, eight and three.
Starting point is 00:51:47 You going into the Olympics in their last 24 games, 17, six and one. Oh, my God. That's trade everything that's not tied down. Wow. Yeah. And here they are in the playoffs, man. Yeah, it's it's crazy. It's it's crazy.
Starting point is 00:52:04 I just I now here's my question. do you think that they honestly honestly they're playing with house money right you get to the playoffs you weren't expecting to be that it's great you're the last team in the eastern conference to clinch do they stand a chance against the penguins oh yeah you think so yeah yeah absolutely they're exactly the kind of team you don't want to play heading into the play why is that well they're hot oh well that's yeah okay they're hot they're getting goaltending they had a player joined them uh recently who fits them like a glove like it's no disrespect to pittsburgh like that is that's checking a lot of boxes in don't want to play youville that's they're pretty good
Starting point is 00:52:42 man jesse what do you think do you think they stand a chance the philadelphia flyers a hundred percent they stand a chance it's just a matter of how much you believe in the defense that they're playing in the low scoring shut down hockey that they have going i can give you some of the numbers for the Flyers in their miraculous run because it is truly a coaching marvel and this thing deserves so much credit. Rick Talkett deserves so much credit for this thing. If we look at the power play percentage
Starting point is 00:53:12 since February 18th, so from the Olympic break on, the Philadelphia Flyers are 30th in the league in power play. If we look at the penalty kill since the Olympic break, the Philadelphia Flyers are 28th in the league. Disaster.
Starting point is 00:53:27 Oh, that's crazy. if we look at the shots per game in the league since the olympic break the philadelphia flyers are 27 what wow if we look at the shots against per game for the philadelphia flyers since the olympic break they are fifth overall in the league i mean so we were talking about lindy ruff earlier based on that shouldn't it be talk it in a walk talk it has had the most impressive run of any coach this season if we're talking just from olympic break to the end of the season yeah no coach has been had a better run than what he's doing right now with the style of hockey they're playing where we're not gonna score we're gonna maybe allow we don't wanna we don't we don't
Starting point is 00:54:16 need it we don't need special teams we're gonna allow a bunch of goals when we're on the penalty kill too we're not even gonna worry about that it's just the other team at five on five isn't gonna get any shots on goal and the puck's not gonna be in the back of our net and we're gonna do just enough to win these games oh oh you like a good narrative there jesse what's that that's playoff style hockey you like a good narrative jesse i don't think that's a bad narrative at all because like you said like rick tockett deserves a lot of credit he should get jack adams votes probably should land second in voting i think behind lindy ruff or if you want to put john cooper ahead i don't care as long as lindy ruff wins it but from that point on he's had the most
Starting point is 00:54:59 impressive run but he didn't figure it out the first parts of from october to february it was pretty bad he didn't figure it out so i can't give him the jack adams for that but if we had a jack adams from olympic break onwards he deserves yeah 100 he'll get votes i think you should finish top three we should be more awards please give me funny weird awards let's award the jack adams based on quarter i want it 19th overall in goals for per game and they know they're not even goals against per game goals against is is where we see the philadelphia flyers thrive second in the league oh well this this is what this is what i'm trying to illustrate with all the numbers everything scoring wise disaster everything defensively the best in the
Starting point is 00:55:45 league they've only allowed 2.4 goals per game since the olympic break if you only allow 2.4 goals per game you are bound to win 70 of your hockey 17 out of 20 i think they're on a 700 point percent yeah that's that's how you win hockey games if this translates to the playoffs pittsburgh watch out because that's unbelievable that's an unbelievable defensive run that is system that's guys buying in that's every hockey cliche about playing defense because they're not scoring but they're playing enough defense where you don't need to put up a bunch of goals porto morton can come in and score a couple and you're gonna win a game i just can't believe we're talking about the philadelphia put three goals on the board the flyers win the game that's ridiculous
Starting point is 00:56:26 philadelphia my entire life you haven't been able to say that about the flyers like or that they had good goaltending never never never had good goaltending since john van beesbrook like maybe bridge gallop for a minute boucher for a minute but like never sustained remember when they had bobrovsky oh yeah for five seconds yeah if anybody if anybody's curious that's a lot of what i was gonna say in the flyers penguins preview uh series preview so i blew my load on that one that's all right blow it again you can you can hear it again phrasing we'll work on that like that um i think i think ultimately it's another just great story out of the east this has been a tough obviously the atlantic's a much much tougher division but this is a great story and on top
Starting point is 00:57:09 of that they beat out columbus who we already mentioned and the islanders who really had a disastrous end of season let's just know what they bought at the deadline bought big yeah they bought with the justification of it's a buy going forward but still still they also like the palat trade is a buy it was a you know somewhat of a hockey trade but it's a buy yeah i thought they were gonna make it man yeah i did me too they look so good for so long and schaefer is such a good story and fizzled out two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk.

Starting point is 00:58:24 I have a question about the other side of the league now. Moving on from Philly, unless you guys know things. No, as an Easterner. Take that, Bouchard! The Golden Knights. You don't watch games past 9 p.m.
Starting point is 00:58:43 No, no, no. Because I need to get to sleep early so I can wake up early and think about ways to rip off the West. Sorry. My bad. Can I be honest with you? Morgan Rielly should get more Norris votes than Bouchard.
Starting point is 00:59:02 It is a bizarre point of view to think that. Can you imagine somebody in the East saying that about the West? Well, they're eating dinner and not paying attention while our teams are playing, which is a total justification, by the way. Oh, you're with your children. they're at work you're at work yeah what do you know you don't know anything about our teams like it would sound ridiculous and yet the west pulls it off certain parts of the west not all the west
Starting point is 00:59:28 yeah certain parts of the west pull that off and people buy it it's crazy we've talked about we we said earlier like listen you want the leafs to be on fewer national games and you might be shocked by this us too yeah it sucks we don't have a gene principe that would be awesome we don't have our own version of that we don't no we don't have glenn glenn healy calls every flames game every local flames game for sports net didn't even we don't have a local crew here we don't it'd be nice yeah we like we literally don't we had a radio guy sometimes they'll put kipper and born on on sports net and it'll be like a leaf centric panel tsn will do that too from time to time yeah but it's pretty it's pretty sparse let's just call it what
Starting point is 01:00:12 it is yeah um now i do want to say that the last time the vegas golden knights lost in regulation bruce cassidy was still the coach is this not exactly what we called 601 under torts i said they're either eight eight no or oh and eight there's there can be no in between and i'm really not that far off all they need to do is get a point you nailed it yeah uh-huh all they need to do is get a point in the next game uh and they will clinch the division that's game 82 or the Oilers lose now we were talking about still catch them too but they'd have
Starting point is 01:00:45 to win two games and Vegas would have to lose in regulation we were talking about them realistically missing the playoffs when they fired Bruce Cassidy like this is what I've been saying
Starting point is 01:00:54 it so many times this season that it became like a bit of a dismissible bit you need like a hot week or two sometimes yeah you're a hot week or two away from blank the Vegas Golden
Starting point is 01:01:09 nights might miss the playoffs but they're a hot week or two away from winning the division and here they are the los angeles kings can they still win the division because they've won five in a they can't win the division but they could get home ice the kings have 89 points 80 games that's preposterous oilers have 81 sorry 91 points and they're in 81 games so it's possible not only is it possible by the way that we could get an la edmonton first round oh my god because the ducks have been really bad you can't stream that i can't we have to protest it as a company no i'm doing no no well you'll do something else in the meantime there's not there anymore though jesse it's dj smith no i mean i've had enough five years in a row maybe we get a miracle on
Starting point is 01:02:02 manchester again maybe we get something like that but oilers kings is possible oilers i'm sorry uh kings having home ice advantage is possible the real miracle would be them not playing each other that would be the miracle i mean it seems like they're on a collision course and by the way listen the ducks are put themselves in a really tough spot here if they got to win these last two games they unless they're doing a bit maybe they're doing a bit because they think it'd be funny if the kings play the oil they have two games in hand on the oilers and and knights and they have the same amount of games as the kings one game in hand i'm sorry one game in the other teams i still have a game left so yeah you're right you're right so they're anaheim not winning
Starting point is 01:02:41 this division really sucks for them because yeah not that they'd love a utah matchup i don't think they would but i like a utah matchup better than i like an oilers matchup well that could still be kings could still hop utah right they get well yeah that they would hop utah and go directly into the pacific division they'd come out of wild card somebody from the pacific would come down no but anaheim could still finish third and the kings could still hop utah all of that could that's also true yeah the orders could technically be a wild card team possible yeah that too yeah yeah and then the mammoth could drop down to two wild card yeah they could everything's up in the what i'm trying to get at is we don't know these matchups because these five teams could all play
Starting point is 01:03:26 each other in different ways yeah i just i don't want to be the team that plays colorado there is a scenario where edmonton could play colorado in the first round oh that'd be cool okay maybe yeah absolutely because the kings could hop the oilers and then the oilers could be behind the mammoth on because the mammoths still have two games left they could win a couple and the oilers lose their last game so the mammoth have more points and then colorado gets the worst team which could be the Oilers in the second wildcard clip this and send it to Drew we could have abs Oilers first round he that's stupid that's really dumb yeah I kind of love it proud to be nuts you have what could end up being a 121 point regular season just to play back-to-back Stanley
Starting point is 01:04:11 Cup finalists and Connor McDavid in the first round ew ew yeah hey debate time fellas LA by the way since the firing of uh what's his nuts has been pretty good and a big shout out to respect uh big shout out to uh the la kings for getting it done because we're so grateful for your second round pick let's go leafs yes oh right the lawton trade yeah we do get their second round pick now is it theirs or somebody else's i believe it's theirs i don't know the answer um here debate time go would the ducks have won canada reads the hey yeah would the ducks have won the division if they still had jamie drysdale and jack murtaugh what kind of question is no no do you know why i mentioned those two players but they were traded
Starting point is 01:05:01 for cutter goche straight up i know what kind of season is cutter goche had steve 40 goals in 74 games as a 22 year old and one of the criticisms of the flyers before martone made it was like where's the high end scoring right it's like zegras is having a great year but that's 67 points yeah and i i listen i don't want to say your boy was right again but who came on here and roundly criticized the philadelphia flyers after that trade for not only torching this kid but also trying to sell this trade to Flyers fans as though it was a good one. It was not.
Starting point is 01:05:42 Drysdale's been better this year. He played a big role on that team. But what the hell are we talking about? And back then, I can't believe anybody bought that. And here's the thing. If Cutter Gauthier's like, I won't report, you go, okay, cool. And you hang on to his rights
Starting point is 01:05:56 because eventually he's going to cave because he wants to play in the NHL and make millions of dollars. He only played two seasons at university. I know, you just leave it. And guess what? The coach that he didn't want to play for doesn't coach there anymore was it you fired towards the next year if i remember correctly
Starting point is 01:06:10 it wasn't necessary it wasn't just that he won't report it's that he also had not signed which gave him the leverage oh i guess maybe but still 40 goals in 74 games as the fifth overall pick from how's that he was picked in 2022 if goche wasn't going to play for you there was a better trade out there listen we just got flyers fans back on us i know let's leave i know anyway it's man for anybody looking for an answer the lawton deal is the sabers pick oh come on brad the toronto maple in the event los angeles secures a spot in the 2026 stanley cup playoffs the pick will become Buffalo's 2026 second round pick. Why do you even
Starting point is 01:06:59 have that? Did L.A. have a second round pick to get their own? Yeah, I'm not sure they have Buffalo's. Yeah, they have. They do have their own pick. Yes, he got Buffalo's because I think L.A. could be terrible next year. L.A. could be
Starting point is 01:07:15 awful that this could be the last time is that because of Warren Fogle? No. Why do you have that? Damn it. that's so ass it's ass here's the uh scott lawton trade details yeah go away pick acquired 2026 third round pick from buffalo and then in the event c trade i'm pissed click c trade you want to know why yes angeles has that from buffalo yes this wouldn't be the right trade
Starting point is 01:07:49 this is sam carrick going to no no that is this is what it links to it's sam carrick is it not because buffalo got it somehow well why does we should get the trade tree guy on this they have buffalo's pick then in the sam carrick deal oh i don't know did sam carrick go to la oh then the rangers acquired buffalo's second round pick i'll need to do more digging yeah i need more that sounds crazy all right i need more clicking well i'm so god yes that just sucks what no no no we got a second rounder we got a second rounder it's not the second round it's a second rounder that this makes the trade so much more ass the best case scenario was a second round pick that's basically a third hey the worst out of my face the worst case was i believe
Starting point is 01:08:38 buffalo or ottawa's third i think it was ottawa's yeah well it's the better of the two yeah that was the details so it was buffalo or ottawas so it was almost a fourth rounder the brain cells have left the building in mlse buddy holy smoke oh don't worry it's about to get better yeah um uh anyway it's going to be very very interesting in the pacific two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters. The Rangers came in like a lion left like a very very sick lamb uh but jonathan quick had a bit of a revival there and i just wanted to know if you guys have anything to say about his career because i think potential future hall of famer two-time cup winner um there were definitely at his peak some
Starting point is 01:10:18 criticisms of his consistency i think some people used to say like yeah he's a couple good months a year but usually those months happen in the playoffs yeah they're april man june yeah that's pretty good i can remember him being pretty flipping phenomenal what do you have to say about jonathan quick listen 9 13 9 46 9 34 that was three straight playoffs uh with jonathan quick including a 9 47 little run how do you not win the cup three years in a row well dude he won he won the cup with a 9 46 save percentage in 20 games whoa in probably the most definitive of con smith like maybe of my lifetime and then he also had a 9-11 in 26 games in 2014 when justin williams won it he's he's one of those goalies where statistically and in terms of his trophy
Starting point is 01:11:12 case you're going to be like why was there ever an argument against this guy at least when you look at his um at his playoff resume and the old guy answer is well you had to be there like there were some red flags with uh some of his goalie underlying numbers and but again april may and june he showed up he i'm not convinced has bones in his lower body like the the most flexible goalie of his generation not like traditionally not even traditionally like the new wave of huge goalie he plays i don't know how big he actually is but he plays kind of tiny and just moves with crazy finesse and explosive speed and was exactly what you want in all your best players big when it mattered yeah jesse what about yourself what do you have to say i jonathan quick
Starting point is 01:12:12 is 40 but i don't think retirement was thrust upon him in the way it traditionally is he's saying looking good say like it was on jerome mcginla you piece way back when when adam ran that bit sack but jonathan quick last year had a really good run to start the season with the uh new york rangers when they were good for brief moments last year and the year before he had a 9-11 save percentage um which is outstanding in 26 starts and then this season he had an 891 and if you look at the save percentage across the league that's not bad it's not bad at all and he was so consistent throughout his entire career and that little wonky stretch of when um he goes to vegas and through what was it columbus yeah yeah
Starting point is 01:12:59 and they didn't and they didn't want him or anything they just reroute him the rangers pick him up at age 38 and you don't you're thinking okay he's going there for half a season you'll retire after this and he has three solid seasons in new york after all those years in la and this is a guy who just unflappable in his goal setting abilities did you say how dead in the water his career was by the way oh go ahead he when he was traded to vegas his final season with the kings in 22 23 in 31 games he had an 876 which that's not a 2026 876 which is still really bad this is a few years ago and that was hot buttocks that was garbage and he went to vegas and went oh goalie and he turned it into a few more years and new york did a good job in new
Starting point is 01:13:49 York too yep um that's uh yeah Jonathan Quick it kind of listen we're getting to the point now where some of the guys who were stars when this show started uh well there's not many of them left let's be honest it's like Corey Perry um so I'm 40 when I see stuff like that I'm like oh man like Jonathan Quick at a Hall of Famer oh yes I would argue yes okay uh Conn Smythe two-time cup winner the I'd like to know the percentage of Conn Smythe winners to not get in the Hall of fame and i'd like to know the percentage of cons might winning goalies he has in the hall of fame how many career wins 400 career wins is a 9 10 save percentage in 829 career games that's i don't think that i don't think it's a debate no he's a hall of famer no first i don't know
Starting point is 01:14:36 it's first ballot because the hockey hall of fame cabal of secret men do whatever wonky thing they want to do but he's a hall of famer no doubt yeah no vesna no heart and the reason i bring that up is like i mean if we're having the hall of fame discussion like that's who gets in first ballot second place vesna trophy voting in the 2012 season he has two jennings awards third place uh vesna in 16 so you lose to that bum in 2012 2012 season do you know are you joking i assume price but i don't know let me just scroll henrik lundquist oh there you go rangers connection again wow lundquist went 39 and 18 and 5 with a 930 that's stupid dude he was great he was and like his mixtape like again you had to be there sort of thing watch the frigging safes this guy made
Starting point is 01:15:35 and like going toe to toe there was five years where the championships were blackhawks oh actually it was interrupted blackhawks bruins way to ruin it uh kings blackhawks kings blackhawks and that was who la had to go through every year it was formidable man it's formidable go go and watch the ridiculous saves he made the leafs last night were up three nothing and then they then they allowed uh dallas to come back and tie it three oh and then the lead and then they were up five to three and then dallas said i don't think so uh both robertson scored and dallas won it by the grace of god in regulation so i was in real sports yeah and the cheers were real conflicted
Starting point is 01:16:30 one guy the six five i was objectively rooting for dallas it's for the best i'll never forget the sound this random man made and he'll never know he had this impact on my life but maverick bork did you get the final one yeah he yeah it was for the hat trick he scores to make it six five and he went oh he didn't know what he wanted oh he has no idea i want to i want to do a particular shout out listen i know he was really mad about it and i get it troy stetcher saved that game and william kneelander's giveaway that also saved man william okay question any mistake a player makes in this game and in the final game do we just go fine i am very very very on team tank um and i know that they don't want that but what are we doing here like really what are we doing
Starting point is 01:17:29 here would it would it discourage you to know calgary's final two games are against colorado and la that doesn't sound good the best you can hope for is both teams rest guys that's the best you can hope for that's it i mean colorado should straight up yeah yeah you should well because think about it dallas last year plays robertson in game 82 in game 82 he gets andrew doesn't play to the conference finals two years ago uh uh it was patrice bergeron wanted to play his last game in montreal got hurt oh i forgot remember that yeah like don't be stupid don't play them what are you doing that's when they broke the record too yeah yeah like what do you know no sorry patrice i know you've already played your last game in montreal
Starting point is 01:18:18 you're not playing tonight you gotta hurt his back make some kind of bargain like all right you can play the first period yeah and sit on the bench yeah that's a good well you get a shift you get goodbye you're phil kessel keeping the streak alive yeah exactly exactly yeah um do you uh i loved seeing mercedes robertson uh the robertson's mom uh she's got her her nick jersey and her uh jason hat uh both boys scored which i thought was cool two in five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of

You're richer than you think. um beyond that last night jesse outside of the joe bowen stuff that we've already talked about what was the vibe in there their last game of the season everybody's just playing out the stretch
Starting point is 01:19:55 everybody what the fans feel like though like what did it the fans well there's barely any fans there by the end of it it was mainly dallas fans i couldn't believe how many stars fans i passed in the street yeah it was packed so pre-game it's packed with stars fans doing the uh warm-ups there so they can cheer on their team, get pucks or whatever. And then by the end of it, all the Leafs fans had cleared out. They're doing whatever, maybe in the Scotia club where Adam is. And it's just Stars fans left in the seats. It was a weird atmosphere.
Starting point is 01:20:23 I hadn't experienced that since that Islanders game we went to way back when. When Tavares scored in overtime? Yeah. That's right. It's been 10 years of every game mattering in the regular season. And this was one of the special games that meant nothing. It's game 81. the team is hot dog water they are not going to make the playoffs and they blew a three nothing
Starting point is 01:20:47 lead and a five three lead and a man passes by me yesterday wearing a jamie mccowan oh just that was also number 34 by the way give him yes it was one of the most famous 34s there wasn't a lot of cheers when things were happening like if they blow a 30 lead in any other game you're hearing boos and when they're scoring goals there aren't a lot of cheers when they're blowing things there aren't a lot of boos it was just kind of apathy they were taking interest in the things they could yeah it was either right before dallas tied it or took the lead but robertson had a great little dash but everyone's like oh and then they're also like oh but hope he doesn't score yeah yeah um uh casey the smith did make a great save action i've made a few too
Starting point is 01:21:35 yeah and again i just went on the robertson play oh right but it's just oh what do i want it's it's good that's a game where you turn up the sound system a little higher so it sounds like there's a little bit more going on they already play that sound system at ear-cracking level that's that's one of the biggest complaints from the press box i fucking hate every the speakers are like right there and it's way too loud in there how are you supposed to conduct business with that kind of volume oh yeah well i think i think that by turning up the volume that they're going to get more people into it i don't think that's the case it's actually a really and maybe because i'm 38 but i know they've turned it up in the last 10 years and i know that
Starting point is 01:22:15 like during the uh the next gen games there's a lot of like high pitched like bounce sounds and stuff like squeaks and things like that and when they come out of those speakers in that arena it feels like somebody's stabbing you in the eardrum yeah yeah so thought about that you know uh what extraordinarily loud noises uh terrifies a five-year-old i know yeah no scottsdale arena is way too loud and it has been for a couple years now they need to turn everything down it's ridiculous it's it's clearly not working to get the suits into it try something else yeah right the big culprit of all this too is baseball games these days the rogers center in between every single pitch they have a little sound they play it's just giant music blasting or
Starting point is 01:22:57 whatever clap your hands every single pitch they play a noise see i like i like baseball for that little bit of just there's a little bit of calmness like there isn't that anymore oh i can't that doesn't exist you can't just watch a batter go to the plate and have an at bat with no noise being played in between every pitch it's really annoying do you think that's because of the raptors because there was there was a very long time in this city where the raptors were kind of knew they weren't all that good but people whether they were a good or a bad team were always like oh raptors tickets are worth the price of admission because there's always something happening and the cheerleaders and the two different mascots and this is a lot of fun
Starting point is 01:23:40 and are we seeing like the leafs and jays try that i don't think it's directly from the rafters they're raptors they're definitely taking things from the nba game because this is a thing that's happening across major league baseball the biggest complainers about the noise between pitches are yankees fans because it's happening at yankee stadium and that's sacred to them right you don't need it at all exactly we're there it's loud it's crazy but now in between every pitch there's something so i think the major league baseball has taken that from the nba where there is a lot going on but it's so much more subtle in basketball because of how back and forth basketball is and constant is it feels more within the game and the entertainment live and they've taken that and try
Starting point is 01:24:22 to put it in these sports where it just doesn't work alan alan is a bit old school but he hates because he goes to a lot of european games they don't do this at european games european games the fans carry it's about the crowd the crowd just just chants and they stand and they bring their drums like when we had jg peterka on he was talking about playing for his childhood team in germany i think i forget what the franchise was manorheim maybe i don't know anyway um he he said one of the favorite things he he experienced as a player was playing for oh it's munich um is is feeling the drums while you're on the ice like the thumping of the drums and people getting into it how old were you when you realized you weren't as cool as most of the world oh man first time i went
Starting point is 01:25:03 to europe i'm like they're having more fun over here it's not even europe it's all of oh all of south america central america yeah absolutely we have a lot of sports for a culture that doesn't appear to be all that enthusiastic about sports right like europe i think it's our puritanical background i'm not even kidding asia sit down i'm trying to watch the game yeah man like everywhere every british you're like you're not allowed they used to have only standing in in in epl games or before the epl and they had those railings that people would hold on to but they realized that these guys would show up drunk and they'd be standing all game and that's bad because that's when you start to get into fights if you actually sit down it calms you down which is why they have
Starting point is 01:25:45 they mandated seats in the epl they mandated them like it's uh it's it's nuts man like i think i i think that a lot could be done with the maple leaf sort of game ops thing um to to change what's happening there um and i feel like none of it's been done it's just yeah let's turn up the volume and i feel like the organization's been in freeze for the last couple of years anyway in a lot of ways they are completely and utterly directionless i you know his name i can i just be honest you know what name i'm really shocked to hear come up connected with the leafs what john chayka yeah yeah why well because so he was with arizona and you know credit where it's due he started building up those draft picks and players and stuff like that he did
Starting point is 01:26:30 draft some pretty from what i remember wasn't he the guy that drafted keller like is it not um like it was a while ago asking me to remember the specifics of the john shaker coyotes yeah sorry that was a saga man john shaker uh gm let's see when he was gm so he was general manager he's 26 when he took over uh in 2016 so coyotes draft some people are like oh you got married when you were 26 that's pretty young this guy was gm of an nhl team so he started he drafted keller and chikrin in his first draft sheesh that's not bad those are his first two wow uh then po joseph and mckenzie entwistle in his second and then barrett hayton kevin ball uh ty eberson oh uh matthias michelli um and then i believe he was fired before the 2021 draft if he
Starting point is 01:27:25 wasn't then he did pretty good because genther and doan and jj moser and emil lilliburg were all in that draft no he's fired it yeah he would have been fired before that one but it was his scouting staff that was oh yeah he was working out these kids that's why they had to forfeit a bunch of picks right so he would have been a part at least he could take some credit for that i am surprised though i mean it seems like he's been sitting on the sidelines perhaps in the penalty box i don't know but it's just that name that has been more surprising to me than mike gillis just because i haven't heard him mentioned at at all with any nhl job well the nhl is a boys club right yeah and the league will like we've said many times recommend hey here's a list of candidates for your team
Starting point is 01:28:05 that you should look at there is a less than zero percent chance the nhl is going how about john chayka the the league is probably not stoked to hear his name out there at all it's wild to me that two of the top candidates are guys who haven't been in the league in years gillis hasn't been in the nhl since like 2014 15 um and john chica is that also quite a long time is that good i don't know because like on one hand we don't want another hockey man well there's no doug armstrong yeah which isn't happening no yeah which is doug armstrong is bradshaw living with itchy feet like he that that's an establishment guy who like actually does stuff and he did get unprotected violently doesn't yeah yeah i i'm trying i don't know what i want other than i
Starting point is 01:28:59 want somebody who's analytics driven i like that's the one well that's john shaker right that's why his name's out there because he's in analytic mind right yeah but like then there's mike gillis who i don't know if he's an analytic mind but he's good at finding people who think like that and employing them and putting them in a position to succeed and listening to them and trusting them, which Brad Treleving didn't do. Mike Gillis has actually been really influential in the current just hockey scape, like front offices around the league.
Starting point is 01:29:33 And I say that because so many of the early adopters of hockey analytics that actually ended up getting into Canucks front offices, or sorry, NHL front offices are former Canucks writers. Bloggers. Bloggers, literally. who specifically covered that era of the Canucks um and the Canucks were kind of when Gillis got there the Canucks could have been justified in being like listen you got these Sedins they're
Starting point is 01:30:06 pretty good but your team is too soft and you're gonna get stomped in the playoffs every year um you should move on and he came in there and he said actually what if we kept the extraordinary skilled and talented players yep and we figured out how to build around them which oh wait a second this is starting to sound like the kind of guy i want to take over the leafs and where they're at um but again he hasn't done it for over a decade so it's and there really was no proof of concept with the coyotes either he was there six years you're talking about yeah shake sorry steve was on gillis yeah i mean gillis clearly proof of concept but shake it uh where i started this i just feel like i'm like did they do that great uh oh the coyotes well like hey
Starting point is 01:30:55 you're gonna go from a team that had like two blueberries and a button to put together a team yeah and versus the leafs right yep but the mistakes you can make with more money could be greater as well like yeah they didn't either of these guys get the job i'll be able to be like well here's the reasoning behind it but if you're asking me to give an enthusiastic endorsement like shit yeah this is exactly what i wanted them to do i'm gonna have a really hard time doing that they did not qualify the entire time he was there with the exception of 2020 where they won their qualifying round against the predators and then lost to the abs wasn't that with taylor hall it was yeah was it right yeah because he made that trade for taylor hall right this taylor hall
Starting point is 01:31:43 noted arizona coyote whoa yeah remember they had phil kessel too for a little bit what yeah you're right yeah kessel was a coyote taylor hall was a lot of people don't know this oliver eckman larson yeah max domy sorry sorry max domy and by the way the guy that only had some of his best uh moments of his career who was who was who succeeded john chayka when he was suspended by the league you're gonna love this close wasn't he there maloney no maloney was he was his predecessor then went to calgary don't no another player though jesse no go ahead currently with the leafs another player currently with the leaves who steve sullivan was the interim general manager what on shake it yeah
Starting point is 01:32:30 isn't that crazy why don't i remember that at all i know i know yeah just i was only because after afterwards that's what happened a guy who at the beginning of the season was assistant coach of the marlies yeah was an interim nhl general man coyotes thread runs pretty deep through the organization don't and sullivan and for living and they all know each other one thing i noticed from last night's game is they had the least got a power play and on the graphic it goes least power play 15th and i went what in 15th and what the league no that's what it said is it actually unless it was home power play what's wrong with that what's wrong with that is uh when steve sullivan took over it was like 31st so i was pretty surprised to see it that high yeah unless
Starting point is 01:33:19 i misread the graphic no he's 21.5 percent that's 15th in the league yeah that the leafs have a top half power play that's a miracle that is a miracle good call i didn't i did not know that i just i saw it on the screen and it might as well have been a naked lady i was like what since december what is that doing on the what since december 25th mr christmas the leafs have the second best power play in the league one more time since christmas through april 14th what the leafs have the second best power play in the nhl they only trail the hurricanes who have the best power play that should tell you how bad the Leafs have been that that hasn't come up once and we're stunned by it and it hasn't helped no it hasn't that was their worst stretch of hockey is that
Starting point is 01:34:11 stretch after they win the bunch of games right early January and then they had their worst stretch of hockey from uh late Jan through now they were better when the power play sucked all of that was done with the second best power play in the NHL can I wow can I drop another one on you sure tell me jesse don't look at the stats tell me where the least penalty kill ranks yeah probably i'm gonna say eighth fifth hey fifth there you go wow hey how do you say they're not as bad as as they've played i do think that there's some there are some signs of that well so i was being wishy-washy about oh should you bring back sullivan i think you bring back sullivan you clearly bring back lalonde you clearly bring back sullivan obviously
Starting point is 01:34:56 you bring in a new coach they're going to have their preferences but like these guys have earned jobs i'm changing my percentage i think last episode i said there's a 30 chance brube gets fired i'm going now there's an 80 chance he returns oh jesse so i'm moving the percent from 70 to 80 hate that next i think next season he's he's the head coach we're not i don't it's not going to happen this week i'm out on that and i don't think the new guy coming in is going to fire him i think berube is the coach next year now our next episode is going to be after leaf's locker clean up thursday yes oh so it is thursday thursday is when the locker cleanout's going to happen and then our next episode's friday matthews is going to speak there people are
Starting point is 01:35:37 like what's he going to say nothing nothing nothing anything expect and no management will speak by the way at that because there's no one to speak well they do have brandon pridham and ryan hardy there are somebody's running it yeah i guess somebody had to sign the land and sim deal yeah who who was yeah i wasn't gonna bring it up but i was like who did that i'm still doing the job yeah which is cool and i think he should be in consideration for it full time i kind of would really like that i think it'd be a great choice you bring in a president you let pridham be the gm and then you bring in your old guy for whatever big top job you want that's a skit waiting to get made is keith pelly giving the the press conference that he did with brandon pridham in the background
Starting point is 01:36:21 watching keith pelly slowly describe him but not actually talking about him at all like come on i'm right here yeah we want an analytics focus come on i wrote the cba you're a dick oh sorry anyway it's uh it's i i am very curious about what happens because you know there's journalists out there who are like well because there's going to be a treatise on this season there's going to be something from several different reporters who i know are just like chomping at the bit i'm very curious about what happens thursday night friday morning saturday morning sunday in terms of what we hear from journalists in this there's a really good media podcast i listen to called the press box with brian curtis and he calls it the now you tell a story it's a trope throughout pro sports
Starting point is 01:37:12 here where yeah whatever if whether it's the athletic whether it's whatever website you read they tell us when the season's done some reporter who's been around the team tells us the now you tell us story so the russo we're gonna get russo yeah or whenever espn does whatever feature on whatever football team that had a tumultuous season it's like now you tell us and those are all the details on everything that went wrong there's gonna be a big drop this week with the leafs and the now you tell us stories there was there might be four yeah i'm thinking i'm thinking at least two from the athletic steve simmons is gonna have his piece too at this time Friedman would probably give us some good nuggets.
Starting point is 01:37:49 But Freedman... CJ! Well, I said a couple from the Athletics. I said it better. Okay. It could be three, because I was thinking CJ, Jonas, and James are all going to do it.
Starting point is 01:37:58 Jonas is going to have a banger. You think Cloak will do it too? Josh Cloak? We'll see. And then... I want to hear how Jonas makes it about Max Domi. We all know why they faltered this season, and there's one answer.
Starting point is 01:38:16 That righty little beast. Maximum. I don't know why he speaks like this to me. No, I wish Jonas spoke like that. Like he was a WWE announcer. We should invite him in to be on the show and give him a Domi jersey. Yeah, we should.
Starting point is 01:38:30 I love that. Jonas is a great guy. Okay, we'll leave it there. Next show is going to be on Friday, like we said, after Leafs locker cleanout day. And we will know all the playoff matchups. Oh, yeah. All of them.
