Starting point is 00:02:58 So I want to start the show with a bit of a curveball, because I saw this come up right before, and I thought this would be interesting for us to chat about very, very quickly. Did you guys know that NBA ratings are down 22% this year to last, and 48% from the last 10 years to now? I did not, actually. I didn't know the number was that big. It's big. And these are just the ESPN ratings.
Starting point is 00:03:25 And I wanted to know. People are saying, oh, it's the product. It's the product. And it might well be. But I wondered, have people been finding out about Yarm 80 Plus? Because if they have found out about Yarm 80 Plus, those people that watch on Yarm 80 Plus are not tracked by the rating systems. and as we all know and we saw this yesterday with youtube tv going up uh another 10 or 12 dollars a month it's not like a thousand dollars to have youtube tv some people love it some people
Starting point is 00:03:53 don't uh i wonder if if if it's just a bunch of people going to your matey plus because it's so expensive if you wanted to watch your all your football this season it's well over two thousand dollars in the states that's crazy that's not like that up here um so i hadn't thought of that adam it actually makes a lot of sense because think about it okay economy's messed up no one has any money it's bad we all know that okay what are you more likely to do go to a game we'll know uh go out to watch a game we'll know maybe maybe yeah but going once in a while yeah it does once in a while sure but going out costs money or stay at home and watch the game you would think i don't like i don't know if this makes sense but wouldn't the ratings go up in times of ideally
Starting point is 00:04:51 times yes but when subscriptions cost as much as they do well this is what i'm saying so maybe and you're paying all these subscriptions and then you're getting you know advertisers aren't thrilled about this because you know you're under hitting your numbers right and but the subscription costs so much that you don't even want to pay the admin fee to then watch it. I wondered. I wondered what you guys thought of that. And the reason
Starting point is 00:05:16 I wanted to bring it up on a hockey show is because I think it presents quite the opportunity for one NHL. Yes. Yes. I think there's... This is good news for the NHL, but there's still work to do. Yeah. The NBA... It's so far
Starting point is 00:05:32 away from the NHL. The NBA had a high place to fall from. and the NHL has a low place to grow from. So it's not shocking to me that one is on a bit of a downturn. I mean, the NHL, compared to the other big leagues in North America, has nothing but growth potential, pretty much. So it's good news. It's good news, but I don't think they're pulling even necessarily just yet.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Jesse, what are your thoughts? For the NBA, I failed to see if it matters that the ratings are down. It's a nice storyline for people to dunk on Twitter and people who don't consume basketball content all the time to yell and scream and look how they're failing or people who are hateful of today's game because there's so much three-point shooting. But at the end of the day, I don't think interest in the NBA is down. i think the same amount of people who want to consume the nba are either doing it in different ways or still have interest in the league itself and with the ratings the number they don't have to fix it right now because they just signed their new tv deal for a couple billion dollars so they have that contract signed for the next decade moving forward a lot of money they're not
Starting point is 00:06:51 being affected by these ratings being down so i don't know if it really matters to them if the interest is still there if the growth is still there and franchise value in terms of their social media consumption if their metrics are like our tiktok highlights are going through the roof but our tv ratings are going down who cares if our tv ratings are going down because everybody's moving to tiktok nba is insane so i i think people are making a bigger deal out of things right now i think the product definitely needs help i think there are little things you can do with the game itself but i don't know if the ratings itself means like the nba is failing so just to put the nba's size into um uh into context for you um so hold on divided by 11
Starting point is 00:07:37 okay uh okay so uh the nhl deal in canada uh uh 10 years ago was worth uh four billion or was it six billion something like that i think the number is 5.2 billion right and the whole thing was that rogers paid more for that than disney paid for star wars and indiana jones which is true um over over a billion dollars more now the idea i mean rogers did not own a movie studio and i'll be honest a rogers star wars movie is not something i want to see uh based on you know other things uh but that was 12 years 5.2 bill there you go the nba deal in the states per year is worth 7 billion wow uh it's it and jesse's right the the new 11 year deal which takes them from next season until 2035 2036 is worth 76 billion dollars it's crazy and so they
Starting point is 00:08:38 that's already that's signed like that's signed the lawyers have stamped it after tnt got really mad because they got squeezed out of the deal yep they they solidified the contract with amazon nbc and espn and and all of those those three platforms have their streaming arm so they're moving even further away from broadcast tv where they used to have tnt used to be a part of that that the nba rights deal and now they've taken away this service that only was on broadcast television they've gone to a service like amazon where they're not on television at all so i don't know if they care if tv ratings are down no i don't think they do i i do find it fascinating i because, you know, the NHL is talking about its growth.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Guys, we're making an extra 500 mil this year. The cap could go up 7%. It's significant. It's significant in those terms. I'm not going to downplay it. No, but when you're talking about scale in the United States, as a Canadian, it is sometimes eye-watering. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:42 You just can't imagine and fathom the amount of people, the amount of money. it's it's it's wild and i look at i look at that and i go yeah the end the nhl has an opportunity here to engage people who maybe aren't thrilled with it uh but i think jesse's right until you have a marketing system that allows for a lebron james to come along and be so a part of the pop culture that he's literally mentioned in songs right you know what i mean um like like even jay-z mentions nick van exel right like nick van exel um but you know what i'm talking about i think it's a it's it's it just shows that the the difference but there is an opportunity there you can grab
Starting point is 00:10:29 people i think oh yeah i think you can grab people a hundred percent um you know it's like i was looking at it the gap between michael jordan's career and lebron james career was zero years i did not realize that so mj retired twice but the last time that he retired was at the end of the 03 season and then lebron was drafted yeah what like what a crazy that's unreal yeah for the nba here's our guy who's gonna step in and fill his shoes this one this guy right now there was a dead period between gretzky and crosby ovi and even crosby ovi is this weird two-headed monster that like i don't know i don't know how you ever repeat that i think that's gonna be really difficult the nba is going through a transitional period uh you know some of the greats are aging
Starting point is 00:11:26 out we're still trying to figure out who the new crop of guys is the nhl i've i've beat this drum for years has never been better to watch ever um as a product being able to actually access it and watch it you know dun dun dun dun dun um that can be difficult but mcdavid matthews mckinnon crosby and ovi are still here we have this uh fanfare of uh ovi's goal record um you know we've talked about how having Quinn Hughes and kale McCarran, the league at the same time is so ridiculous. You have this guy who's like approaching things that haven't been done since Bobby or,
Starting point is 00:12:05 and Oh, he's about to be caught by another guy who's playing at the same time. Um, the NHL is awesome right now. So to me, it makes sense that they're closing the gap, even if it's by a little bit from a next generation of stars standpoint, the NHL is so far ahead of the NBA.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Like you think so? You're very right on that. yeah the the next crop of nhl stars are already established and right there and we're already like rooting for them and and there's they already have giant fan base and the nba is really struggling with that next group after curry durant lebron who are all in their mid-30s and lebron's in his 40s now so like all all of those guys who are aging out they haven't really established the next generation to come up and and take their place but i look at this article here maddie if you want to bring this up it says nba ratings are down 26 percent year over year
Starting point is 00:12:52 on tnt six percent on espn lebron's move west is a big reason why this article about nba ratings being down 26 or six percent was written in 2018 oh wow this isn't the article that you're referencing at all this is a 2018 article that was written about how nba ratings are down and everything is awful and at this point they were four years into their tv deal that they signed previously back in 2014 um that netted them around 2.6 billion dollars per season and what's the new one they signed in between that uh seven six seven it's 6.9 slash seven seven billion dollars per year so in between this time where they signed the tv deal everybody makes a big hoopla about how ratings are down they signed a new tv deal about five years after this where they increased
Starting point is 00:13:39 revenues by five billion dollars what you're saying that's so good so they lost so it should have been 10 billion per year oh yeah is that what it should i'm saying this is it's a cycle we go through where there's a big storm about we got to fix this product in this sport and everything always ends up fine and the story is how how is it failing because that if you could show that it's failing or that it might be failing that's a story people are interested in that right you started this hockey show with it yeah absolutely because i found it fascinating it was like damn you never hear i mean yeah you hear some complaints about flopping you hear some complaints about load management ears and complaints about the amount of three balls but
Starting point is 00:14:17 like you don't really hear on the business side anything going wrong outside of daryl mori being mad at the chinese government and that cost him a ton of money like there was not business wise the nba it's pretty hard to say they've ever put a foot a step wrong since like 93 like you know unless you're around in 2018 and you're reading i'm like oh that's true that's good point jesse that's so crazy jesse that's so good i because when you were like lebron's move out west i'm I'm like, that was quite some time ago. The narrative's obviously different. They're still talking about the stars and all that stuff,
Starting point is 00:14:52 but the narrative's a lot of the same. We're talking about the product, and back then, that's 2018, so Golden State would have been shooting a bunch of threes, too. I don't know if that was one of the big narratives then. Well, they made them. No one ever really complained what they did. They made them. The problem is these bottom third of the league teams
Starting point is 00:15:12 trying to replicate them and just bricking everything and it looks horrible the nfl is the number one head honcho of all this stuff and what they do is a fantastic job at changing their rules for the sake of entertainment and i applaud them for it because whenever they see something's wrong and they need to really protect the quarterback you know and they'll go to the greatest lengths to make sure that the quarterback is protected because they're the most important or they'll tweak little rules here and there they'll have replay assist and eye in the sky referees they're really good at just changing the rules to make sure the product's good i feel like the nba needs to catch up with that and and fix rules that just to make the nba basketball better
Starting point is 00:15:49 because it is getting way too three dependent yeah and they also didn't always have a three ball line like that was a that was a thing that what's only existed in the last 30 40 years no longer than that is longer than that yeah um now here's so speaking of tweaking rules for the joys of entertainment uh what do you guys think about the proposed but it doesn't exist but it kind of does it didn't come out of nowhere golden at bat rule with the mlb and what this would be is once per game teams would be able to send any hitter to bat regardless of where they were in the batting order now uh rod rob manfred publicly has said there are no plans for this but it didn't just fall out of the sky people were you know this is something that's been
Starting point is 00:16:34 discussed at MLB head office what do you guys think of something like that is that a gimmick or is it a strategy so I'm down two or no no I'm down one bottom of the ninth gun to the earth one out Andre Agudela I put Vladdy Guerrero up to bat yeah he grounds out because he has an unreal at bat he has a 13 pitch at bat and eventually fouls out yeah and i can put him right back up to bat yep that's freaking nuts what's weird though is like if he hits a single can you put him back up to bat oh yeah what do you do about that jesse what do you think in theory yeah you put a pinch runner jesse you played high level you take him you take him out of the game oh right so you wouldn't be able to i think it was if he's a pinch runner
Starting point is 00:17:21 then if he gets on base you can't put him back it'd be funny if you were able to like no yeah i guess you couldn't do that ghost runner yeah you have a ghost runner no it's stupid that's dumb i don't think i don't think it's gonna happen no no no because it feels that fun but that feels on the line of this isn't a game anymore it's a gimmick it sounds like you're changing the sport in the fundamental way yes yeah and you take away the opportunity for some 245 hitter who's like seventh in the order to hit some surprise dinger that nobody expects and holy shit the game's over
Starting point is 00:17:59 and it's that guy. Rajay Davis in the World Series? Yeah. You take that away? Yeah. It's a silly idea. It is a silly idea. Now I ask you that to ask you this. This is in 32 Thoughts this morning. Okay. Adam for the
Starting point is 00:18:15 listeners what is that? 32 Thoughts is a blog by a relatively new and up and coming reporter Elliot I think it's free? yeah just got on the scene yeah he's new on the scene uh you should check out his just graduated from western uh yeah when he's not covering horse racing he uh he does a little hockey on the side um this is something he apparently had to do he used to used to have to cover like ajax downs um he's changed the offside rule so here's the deal elliot was he fully admits that at the start he
Starting point is 00:18:46 was on board with the the challenge the matt duchesne we've all seen it where oh my god it's so egregiously offside and there's no way to challenge and he was on board with this on board with replay but now as we've been saying for like two years you can't enjoy a goal no because it could be 45 seconds from the offside but oh the goal it went in even though it was 45 seconds later call the whole thing back last night there was uh the leaf scored a goal where i wondered if dosol had been interfered with and i don't know it's a goal until they drop the puck for the next shift right yeah that's honestly that's when i celebrate it's like when they've actually dropped the puck now uh uh so here's so he he brings up a couple of things um uh and he said um one of them
Starting point is 00:19:39 is a recommendation from Red Wings broadcaster Ken Daniels. He said, change the offside rule so the outside edge of the blue line counts as in the zone. So if the puck is on the outside edge and halfway on the outside edge
Starting point is 00:19:56 of the blue line, meaning like as soon as you touch blue, blue paint, you're in the offensive zone. Okay. So because right now, let's say this phone's blue, okay? And you're crossing into the zone.
Starting point is 00:20:09 This, if that's the goalie over here, this part here, the part closest to the goalie is the part where that's where the onside. How does that, wouldn't you just get problems on the other side of the blue? I think you'd have less problems. It would give you a couple extra inches to stretch your foot or whatever else. Isn't this the equivalent of if the puck touches a hint of white after the goal line, it's a goal? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:34 how many i actually really like this idea good for kenny d kenny daniels uh another one uh one coach suggested giving each team a bank of challenges to start the season one suggested three but that's too few maybe 10 meaning that it doesn't matter if oh it doesn't matter if it's wrong if you don't want to use up your banked challenges like as in you only get 10 challenges throughout the entire season oh the whole season so you could burn your challenges and then teams could just walk in offside although the refs would probably call it dead um there's something i like that idea better i think you like that better okay um because there's some challenges where i'm like okay they got it wrong but i don't feel like they were wrong to ask because it was
Starting point is 00:21:29 close enough you know why not just have the referee in the top of the stadium just call it well well why not get rid of challenge before we get to the thing that makes the most sense another coach had an even better idea nhl commissioner gary betman's philosophy boils down to only overturn it if it is dead bleeping wrong that's the that's supposedly the the front office thing uh with that baseline create a time limit if there's no resolution in that window it's clearly not dead wrong time limit is and the original call stands yep um the problem with that that i've i've noticed is that refs will like they'll like make a call that prevents them from looking bad good rather than no that's the way it should be like in football now referees call
Starting point is 00:22:15 everything a fumble everything's a damn fumble and they just let replay fix it and it's fine because then we let the play uh play out and then if it is a fumble then it's like oh everything's fine now and if it wasn't then we just go back and we just reset by the way they've already kind of done this with uh oh remember oh god it's gonna slow the game down it's gonna slow the game everything is a five minute major that refs review and they go ah never mind and who gives a shit like who really gives a damn it hasn't delayed the game at all and they're making sure they get the call right on a controversial play good if the whole idea of replay is to get the call correct stop making it a little game where coaches have to play oh i gotta challenge this and maybe i'll
Starting point is 00:22:59 win the challenge and we're all not entertaining we're all playing a board game here and i might lose my challenge or get a penalty and if i don't i get i might get a penalty oh what's gonna happen just take it out of everybody's hands have the i have a man in the press box in the official's room and he's sitting there if there's an offside while everything's happening on the ice, he's looking at the offside or have central control in Toronto take care of it on every offsides call
Starting point is 00:23:25 and then just look at it and then you phone down when place stops and say, you know what? That wasn't a goal. You got to go back and take that one. Everything's fine. Now, the last one is, and I think Jesse nailed this,
Starting point is 00:23:36 his final decision should go to the centralized NHL video room. He says, I recognize how much this bothers the four on ice officials. man i wow i can't i'm not don't care can we stop catering to these people um anyway uh elliot said that said the video room underwent another upgrade and is far superior to what the referees and linesmen have access to in game offer offer opinion or insight into what they saw absolutely but there's a former official advocating on their behalf with the rest of the league staff
Starting point is 00:24:09 common sense with the additional technology available in toronto now one thing i will ask is that if they were to go to this model please move it out of toronto put it anywhere else but toronto put it in winnipeg no no montreal no do not have it in toronto saskatoon i love it neutral site neutral site hell yeah saskatoon and halifax doesn't matter and the last thing that elliot doesn't mention and this is what really bothers me so i'm actually going to actively pursue people that invented this technology this weekend in order to bring them on for an interview because i'm this mad about it fucking tennis man they have line fouls that are electronic if they can do it on a clay court if they can do it on a grass court you're
Starting point is 00:24:55 telling me that they can't use the same technology on an ice surface you can't you how about when a goal goes in the goalies on top of it but the ref can't see it and the cam and the net can't see it so they don't call it right how about we just put in a strip a mag strip and if the puck crosses it it's a goal we had an engineer come up to us at a live show or one at greta and she was telling me she was like yeah this we could easily do this she was like yeah no you could why do we need why do we even we can program this very easily so jesse if you come in offside okay if you come in offside because the players have the puck tracking stuff you can put skates or whatever you could eliminate the offside challenge completely in theory i don't know how the
Starting point is 00:25:41 skates i know you could put it on the skates you could do it with a static line the goal line and the puck and then just have some i don't know how the technology works with the cameras and the lines i know you can do that easily i don't know how you can do it with like this the boot of the i think if you have it in both boots i'm less concerned about the boot i guess how about how about the puck it's game seven Stanley Cup final it's overtime there's a mad scramble in front the whistle goes where's the puck it's under the goalie's pad and that ruins everything right there like how is that oh man well we can't see it because the goalie with his enormous freaking pads Sergey Bobrovsky you freaking cheater is on top of it Andre Vasilevsky you freaking cheater
Starting point is 00:26:29 every goalie ever you freaking cheater oh no it's for protection that thing where goalies slide themselves out of the net before standing up after a whistle automatic goal automatic goal you cheated is that not
Starting point is 00:26:45 the goalie equivalent of embellishment $5,000 fine if we're going to have challenges then the NHL's job should not be to adjust the challenges their job should be to eliminate the need for them as much as possible you will always need them but but work towards a system where there's less gray area and you know what's cool these new things uh i was
Starting point is 00:27:12 telling you about this new uh this new reporter elliot friedman um he's using this new thing it's called a computer i know and you'll be blown away by what computers will do in 20 years you might even be able to do your banking on them i watched an episode of south park on the train i'm crazy right crazy you must have did you bring did you bring your vcr to watch it i uh no didn't even need it this time wow that's amazing so anyway i just i thought that was an interesting one that was going to be our second story but we segued into it beautifully so why not make it the first why not sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the
Starting point is 00:27:49 things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and I employed a tasker. Starting point is 00:30:16 moisture absorption we want you to check out doer shop doer.com chop d-u-e-r.com slash sdp it's shop doer.com slash sdp 20 off your first order uh now i want to come back you got to put your chest into it no why not there we go that wasn't even that good yeah it was sucks it sucks are you losing your eye today why not here give me a second why not i thought that was silence um people who are listening no leafs versus ducks and i think i think we found out who the best goalie in the league is last night and neither of them play for the Leafs man Lucas Dostal is so I'm very conflicted on one hand the Ducks to me look clearly better than they were last certainly on the other hand
Starting point is 00:31:11 how doesn't a goalie with a 920 plus save percentage have a winning record because the Ducks are bad so the Ducks do look better and that's because they have Lucas Dostal playing the majority of their games yeah none of this tandem crap anymore having um having jake truba in the lineup is going to help as much as people really oh that guy sucks um it's going to help based on what they had cam fowler is going to get traded here we think right yeah um but they have you know the ducks for a lot of years were a defenseman factory uh they now have a good goalie um now you got to actually bring some forwards in and hopefully Trevor's egress is not more than the six weeks that they're predicting him to be which really
Starting point is 00:31:54 sucks for him and I know he wants to get traded probably as well but I look at the ducks and I go hey there's your centerpiece like forever build out from him forever him Leo Carlson hell of a luxury to have I like Mason McTavish keep it going uh Minshukov Pavel Minshukov keep going yep keep going uh now last night we had uh we had a bit of a scare I'm going to start with the goaltending because we started that with that on the duck side entity stolers tony stolers from the lfr oh tone uh was not available for the third period frank ceravali second period second period excuse me frank ceravali uh reported almost immediately that they don't expect adam wasn't wrong he wasn't available it's true yeah hey available for overtime either even though there
Starting point is 00:32:39 wasn't any yeah he wasn't available yeah adam was right thank you jesse thank you uh no uh so frank Frank Cervalli reported immediately, basically, that they don't expect it to be that serious. Darren Drager said this morning that he'll be undergoing tests, but didn't speak to the validity of Frank's report or back it up in any way. Doesn't mean it's wrong. It just means he didn't have the sources. I'm not suggesting that. I am not suggesting that. But I think, listen, it's interesting when two insiders are talking about the same story and they don't parrot each other.
Starting point is 00:33:12 It means that they've got different people telling them different things. Dreger has a way of conveying a message. He was very interesting with a ranger story recently, I will just say. Yes. I don't think he saw eye to eye with Larry Brooks. I don't think a lot of the media saw eye to eye with Larry Brooks. No, no, no. I don't know how would Frank have known that quickly.
Starting point is 00:33:38 I think he probably has a source in the equipment staff. no but like i don't i don't during the game i don't know like how if the leafs knew well because he hasn't gone i don't i don't know if stoller's new i think he was checking to see like did he snap an acl or something like that oh yeah and that that from what we understand it happened remember he's got like he's got like two knees that he's had to re like yeah anthony solers has a history of knee injuries which is frightening troubling yeah also uh i think by the end of last night he had the second best save percentage in the league behind uh philip gustafson right so you know it's joseph wool's fifth so this is the thing i think one of our one of our events
Starting point is 00:34:20 uh somebody said okay so like they should trade wool now right they have stallers and i'm like oh no they're gonna need both they're gonna need both this is why you have both this is why and they called up dennis hill to be and i got news for you he's gonna play games unless stallers is fine and makes his return to the lineup the leafs have i think it's three straight weeks with back to backs yeah and he'll to be i think and it's wool right like god bless the guy but like they're the leafs have two great goalies right now and you're way more worried about one of them getting hurt and it's not solars it's wool yep keeping him healthy um so you gotta think if stolars is out for all three of those back-to-backs that's at least three hill to be games yep and you're
Starting point is 00:35:06 probably going to want to get him more uh art or act him off just just on the goalie thing uh nick bard in the press box that pointed out that like it should be matt murray time but it's because he covers the marlies he knows that matt murray left a couple of games ago with an undisclosed injury it's unbelievable and it's just always injured and they don't know how long he's going to be out and he's he has had a good season yeah he's been decent down there i mean none of the the Marley's goalies have played that many games. None of them have even reached double digit games played. But that's because it's a,
Starting point is 00:35:39 it's a trio, not a duo. It's acting. I've played nine. He'll do these played six and Murray's played six. And I look at, I look at active ops numbers and people were like, Oh,
Starting point is 00:35:50 why can't we, why can't we see him? And I'm like, let him cook, man. Just give it time. Guys play nine games. You feel for,
Starting point is 00:35:57 you feel for Murray. Who's trying to work his way back. You know, so little play last year three total ahl games and then now this season six games and six a.m he's injured so actimov's got nine games of his belt he has not lost in regulation eight oh and one and has a 929 save percentage and a less than two goals against average i know we hate that stat but that's a pretty cool stat line you have to score or the the marley's only have to score two goals to win the problem with art or akimov from what i can see is that he's not six foot seven
Starting point is 00:36:29 every time he steps on the ice he's only six foot two uh small short king yeah short for a goalie short kick and you know obviously dennis hildeby had a good game a couple good games up here and then a bad a really bad one he had one good one bad his first one was good his second one was bad but that was that was that shitty blue jackets game oh yeah i don't really blame him for that they were well I mean he wasn't great but the team was and he has a sub 900 save percentage with the Marley's this year yeah I'm more concerned about him not doing so great with the Marley's but small sample size the bigger sample size from last year is he's an American Hockey League all-star like as a rookie yeah so um you'd rather have Murray that's why they have
Starting point is 00:37:13 him but the NHL schedule doesn't give a shit what you'd rather so uh they're gonna have to play some games with hildeby and not lean as heavily on their probably best goaltending in the league uh jesse did you get a a concern-o-meter sense from berube when he spoke yesterday no he doesn't give off that kind of vibes no he just he shuts any injury question that happens that night of the game he shuts it down i was like we'll talk about that tomorrow and then next day at practice he'll have some sort of update whether it's like we still don't have info or an actual update yeah but yeah night of the game he never really provides anything did uh were you there for the cold weather comment where he was just like yeah it's cold i was in a t-shirt uh the
Starting point is 00:37:57 t-shirt stuff no no i missed the the t-shirt jokes the bits he was running i love that he's running bits i love that he's a funny dude he's always he's always trying to so i was trying to make people laugh he's good um it's a good it's good entertainment did you get a sense of the relief he might have felt by having jake mccabe back in the lineup i feel like jake mccabe is an important part of the team because i don't feel like uh oel has had the best stretch here and same with like timmons i i like the guy but i feel like he he struggled a little too as of late so the ideal lineup is like mccabe's healthy hawk and paw is healthy and all those guys are playing lesser roles because you have so many different guys to lean
Starting point is 00:38:40 on how about riley because i've noticed the the discourse has started around riley i haven't noticed it that badly myself um but are you picking up anything there riley's not he's not he doesn't make mistakes that i don't feel like are egregious enough to get on his case but he's also not impacting on the offensive end which you haven't really needed but the leafs last two seasons have just struggled mightily to get any type of offense from their defenseman from the back end yes near the last i think last year they're last in league and year before that they're near the bottom of points from their defensemen so you'd like riley to be that impact guy and he hasn't really shown up to do that and yet last night um you get a shot from jake mccain leads
Starting point is 00:39:25 to a rebound he gets an assist on a goal you get a shot from timmons that's tipped in from patch ready led to a goal they're they're getting some more often yeah yeah it's it's it's better this year you know it's not like it was last year but riley specifically you'd hope that he's that guy but you're getting enough from the rest of the line of the timmons shot was interesting too because he was like yeah i wasn't like that's that's planned like i'm not i wasn't trying to score there i wasn't trying to do anything it's like i'm shooting for that play so it's really smart stuff from him defensively i think he's been lacking but offensively i think he's been doing some good stuff so you know berube's got that that 10 of mccabe pairing that he can throw
Starting point is 00:40:00 back out there again so good um i think i love them i think riley oel works way better than i thought and it's so it'll nice nice to have them because i would know no disrespect to philip myers but like yeah your idea is that is that those four like that's that's when they're at their best right yep uh and then myers is talk about playing out of your depth i think it's kind of admirable what he did right yeah and max patch ready had a great game just i was surprised he didn't get the belt because they ended up giving it to wool oh okay and like i don't know how many two goal games is patch ready have left in his career i don't know but i mean wool coming in in relief and being as good as he was i i think 35 right i think it's possible he has more than
Starting point is 00:40:48 you think uh you know max uh he's got uh nine points in 16 games this year dude way better than he was with the capitals well yeah because he missed half of the season yep like he's already got as many goals as he had with the caps yeah and i think that there's a um there's this physical element he has that we were not used to and we've talked about it a lot but his um his chemistry with john tavaris is interesting because you know last year we're talking a lot about the least we're much far more of a rush team last year than they are this year and Tavares's skating was clearly I mean it was never listen John Tavares the knock against him coming in a junior was his skating was great he's never been a fleet of foot guy but the way that the Leafs have slowed the game down
Starting point is 00:41:32 and this type of style they play tends to lend itself to a guy like John Tavares who I like those two together and yeah so I want to talk a little bit about with you two about the the hockey that those two play together because it seems to be um two guys who recognize to varying degrees that their skill sets are not as high end as they used to be it doesn't mean they're not good it just means that you know you're physically different at 30 than you are at 36 and and you know two two major injuries and Tavares has had some concussions and things like that there is a an iq to their game that they play what is it why do they find magic together uh i think they really like the tight areas um i think they like hockey in a phone booth okay um that because that's what
Starting point is 00:42:20 they play uh it's it really is beautiful stuff and i i you can tell they love each other i think they're two peas in a pod i think they're both kind of strange um they're they're both like completely obsessed with their bodies and health and everything. It's funny. I try to picture John in the locker room and I'm like, who do you talk to and what do you talk to them about?
Starting point is 00:42:43 And I can see him and Max getting along really well. Well, they both have a mountain of children. They have eight kids between the two of them. Really? Yeah. Does Patrick have five kids? He has five kids. What? Holy shit. I didn't know that. Wow. And John's got
Starting point is 00:42:59 three. so oh that's both too much and uh you know that max patch ready's wife is the maxima fanagano sister yeah isn't that crazy that's so ridiculous yeah oh my god hockey's so small um wow thank you for that um and i was i was thinking a little bit because william nylander's with them as well and he was he scored last night too he was in on the magic uh got a feed from patch ready and i was thinking about the discourse um like splitting up Matthews and Marner and by not splitting up Matthews and Marner you put Nylander probably with John Tavares there's an argument to split all three of them up but you know whatever they're not doing that they're obviously not doing that
Starting point is 00:43:45 um what what is our constant feedback for Mitch Marner uh uh shoot the puck shoot it stick it in that but what kind of player is he well he's a finesse player he's a pass first player pass first player yeah sure what's willie's twitter bio give me the puck give me the puck that's i think why they don't play together at times it's i mean you want the willie wants the puck in his stick well yeah because you can see it he'll just zip around the offensive zone and just keep holding it and holding it and holding it yeah looking for an opportunity to shoot mitch will do that to pass um i think that's maybe why they're why they're separate but um that line it's so funny yesterday i thought was the the good and the bad of them because they got hemmed in a few times
Starting point is 00:44:35 as well but they had all three goals right they're so fun i thought the first line was really dominant too i was disappointed they they weren't able to crack the code the third line was was really good like i i kind of look back on that game and how close the ducks kept it and everything and i go but wait who on the leafs was like did anyone do poorly i don't think so i think that was just a really competitive team uh last night and the ducks who was looking to bounce back from a crappy game the night before right and they weren't able to do it right i like what the leafs did that third line of um mitten domey and holmberg holmberg's growing on me yeah oh like a like a vine now what okay now actually before you move on to that sure I do want to talk to
Starting point is 00:45:24 I want to ask Jesse about this so when one of the quotes I saw last night and I wanted to ask you about okay was uh our good friend uh Craig Berube and he was talking about um uh he was talking about Nylander and he was saying he's just so so so good that was the quote something along those lines can you tell me the the tone in which that was delivered because i read that uh craig brube was asked i believe it was by steve simmons i believe he was asking him he's like do you think anybody in the nhl could have made that play that neil erner made last night where he hit the puck in the air and then he hit it again up over uh dostol which is just incredible stuff so that the little double tap midair to score that goal and it he was like do you think anybody in the
Starting point is 00:46:19 nhl could could make that play and brube goes well i certainly couldn't and that was the big that was the big laugh so that's the context of him talking about nylander in the press conference last night that's what led to it and then everybody chuckled and then he continued he's like yeah i've never seen somebody get more breakaways than that he's such a great offensive talent i think he recognizes um what the what unleashing nylander can do you know just like giving him the freedom to go chase goals and he recognized like that's when he's at his best and all he wants from him is to show it on the defensive end too you know if as long as you're trying on the defensive end i know the offense is going to be there because of what an incredible talent you are and that's
Starting point is 00:47:00 that's nylander's game right that's we've always asked him to do just show a little more effort on defense because then the goals are going to come and he's really grown into a goal scorer that i don't think we've all imagined that he'd be no what is it 18 goals on the season so far this year could easily hit 50 like and last season where it's really his breakout year we all look at him as 40 oh yeah like you can score goals at this high level but before that it was more like because so much of the focus is always on austin we never looked at him but he's right there one two with any goal scorer in this entire league right now he he just looking back at his career so his rookie little 22 game stint i don't know if that really counts six goals in 22 games okay fine uh 20 didn't
Starting point is 00:47:46 need to slide his elc like that yeah 22 goals in 81 games that's pretty good yeah 20 goals in 82 games okay um then he just i can't believe this is the same player after the terrible contract negotiation in 54 games he had seven goals and 27 crazy cannot believe that's the same player then oh 31 goals in 68 games oh kovat happened guess what tanks again 17 goals in 51 games and it's starting to look like all right Nylander settling into what he is then he gets 80 points in 81 games still it was only 34 goals and then it was 40 40 and he's their top goal scorer yeah I guess I just said like last two seasons I guess last three seasons you know since that first 40 goal season and then another 40 goal season and the pace he was on
Starting point is 00:48:40 last year was incredible uh leading up to the contract signing and then this year he's outpacing himself again with 18 and 29 like he's he's really become one of the best goal scorers in the league and you see it every night could we uh could playing with two old farts like uh tavaris and patch ready and i say that in the in the most um respectful way right both of them are younger than us uh no patches is not i don't think no he is is he november 20th 1988 damn we are older than max patcher ready yeah adam you want to see you want to repeat those words old fart old fart i still i will own that in broadcasting terms steve and i are very young uh sure because broadcasting terms like everybody's over 50 like we have like 25 years before i think we're
Starting point is 00:49:29 considered medium yeah it's wild like uh oh hey oh maddie maddie goes like this what do you mean APU, Matty. Oh, stinky. Yes. The old farts. How dare you? How dare you? You know what?
Starting point is 00:49:44 Back in my day. Oh, sorry. Yeah, you look at guys on TV in any sport, and you're like, oh, that's the 70-year-old man. Well, how old is the Terry Bradshaw? The Fox crew. All of them. All of them.
Starting point is 00:49:56 They're all blue hair. The majority of sports broadcasts have people on air that were also there when I was a child. Yeah. So it's like Terry Bradshaw. Terry Bradshaw, 76 years old. Cliff Fletcher was fully a teenager when Terry Bradshaw was born, by the way. I'm just throwing that out there. In case we want to get back to how old is Cliff Fletcher?
Starting point is 00:50:21 Terry Bradshaw was born in 48. And Terry Bradshaw was a coach in the 70s and has been on TV. So he would have been like book buddies. Oh, sorry, not coach in the 70s. QB in the 70s. Al Michaels, who does Thursday Night Football on Amazon, is 81. wow al michaels al michael called the miracle on ice in like the middle of his career like he was a good enough broadcaster that like well we're gonna put you
Starting point is 00:50:47 during the olympic yeah this big game against the soviet union he called that in like the middle of his career and he's and he's 81 he's still doing thursday night football that's insane that's so funny that oh my god that's so funny miracle on ice something from like a past generation several past generations my parents were like young adults for that holy they were dating yeah he called that when was the miracle on ice again 1980 i don't even think they were married yeah yeah he was like jesse's so right he was good enough to be calling olympic hockey right like when there were no jobs wait no it was five years before they were married i don't even think they were dating yeah like think about the stature you have to get into your career to call something at
Starting point is 00:51:34 that level yes like in your broadcast you know so many people broadcasting just for somebody to be like that's the guy and the and the olympics and when there were less radio and television stations than there are now and you're at a war with the other country you're also at war and have been for half of a fucking century at this point like it's crazy um i i was like oh russell wilson yeah what is anyway with with max with max and john being defensively responsible guys and that comes with age because you um i mean john's always been defensively responsible as far as i know max uh has been relatively throughout his career uh you know there were years when he was close when he was you know scoring 30 in a row for four years where i don't know that he was the
Starting point is 00:52:16 best defensive forward on the team i you just always have the puck but allows knee lander to kind of be himself because he doesn't have to babysit anyone well he if you're out there with those two you have to skate yeah right you have to skate and i think if you're skating you're probably paying attention to uh you know you can go to get skating it's no i am not no i'm telling willie to get oh sorry i was confused how dare you jesse getting skating i'm gonna have to explain that to their mother later okay whoa whoa hey um listen willie i got him laughing i got jesse laughing it's a tough nut to crack yeah um uh you can go balls to the walls and irresponsible um with your lanes and everything but eventually you get fucking tired and you figure it out like
Starting point is 00:53:08 defensive hockey it you know we talk about like working hard and you got to give the effort i think part of being a good defensive player is also not wasting your energy yeah well so your legs don't burn too quickly exactly um no he's he's a great player i mean having max patch ready in that role um and dropping holmberg down in the lineup as well like it just it's better for both of them oh it ties the room together like i want mcmahon back so bad james myrtle was saying in his column that the leaf should probably drop holmberg to the fourth line when McMahon comes back and then you have McMahon Domi and Minton as your third line and then the fourth line has been really really interesting I know Ryan Reeves has not had the
Starting point is 00:53:52 best stat line this year but you know you look at what that fourth line is able to do they cause a lot of offensive zone face-offs because they don't get hemmed in and if you pull Reeves out of the lineup uh even if it's not forever uh you just kind of you platoon or whatever then you can have holmberg doer lorenz and that's a pretty solid and that's a hell yeah fourth line and you can at least experiment with the third line and go can minton center these guys can they get us some depth scoring listen i know what reeves is yeah and i know people don't like him uh i haven't checked the numbers so the numbers might say something completely opposite but by my eye he's been straight up effective um recently he's not going to drive play he's probably not going to be
Starting point is 00:54:37 the reason you win games. He's probably not going to be the reason you lose games. He broke up a scoring chance the other night. He's good on the forecheck. People act like the reason the Leafs are not in first place
Starting point is 00:54:51 right now is because of Ryan Reeves. Or the eight minutes he plays. Like, what? I just don't think that's a thing. However, the fourth line you just mentioned, yeah. There are some nights where that's just going to make
Starting point is 00:55:03 straight up sense. Ryan Reeves didn't play every single game this season like he's been in and out of the lineup early on before the suspension he would get scratched a couple games or like one game and then go back in but now that there's so many injuries he has this regular spot in the lineup but when everybody's healthy i assume he plays most games but some he doesn't so one of the things i want to oh well i just want to mention something depressing we didn't mention nick robertson once but we didn't yeah he played his way off the team yeah yeah at least for now uh i to that point uh there's been a lot of
Starting point is 00:55:39 discussion in analytic circles about the lack of five on five scoring and not just that but like the lack of five on five opportunities and you know all the least are just i've i've seen people say who are very intelligent people the leafs are worse than the record suggests uh they are that's every team with great goaltending they are they're going to be boring to watch and when I look at this and I go okay you had two weeks ago
Starting point is 00:56:10 you had seven forwards out of the lineup and one of them was your 70 goal score or 69 goal score and you don't have the center depth you'd ideally want you still like I know people are everybody wants Minton to be great
Starting point is 00:56:26 and so do I but count me as I'm impressed but not convinced Oh, I thought last game was his best in the NFL. Yeah, Minden's been so good. I loved him. That's somebody who deserves zero criticism. I loved him. You're a piece of crap.
Starting point is 00:56:38 Yeah. Okay. Why do you hate children? Let's get 20, 30 games into it, then we'll talk. Sure. Is my point. Unimpressed. Unimpressed.
Starting point is 00:56:47 I said I was impressed. This is unimpressed with Adam Wilde. Or I'm just unimpressed about things. Hey, you know what, professional athlete? Here's what you stink at. but the I think that the reason some of the numbers are showing that is because they took a lot of punch out of the lineup even a guy like forget Matthews even a guy like Cali Yarncroke who can was up until this point reliably counted on for 15 goals 15 yeah and James Myrtle mentioned
Starting point is 00:57:14 in his column this morning that he may be gone for the year we don't know like he might be gone until the playoffs he might be they might mark Stoneham well like oh that'd be nice yeah I don't think i don't think yarn croak's gonna just get plopped into the lineup like i think if he doesn't play before the playoffs he ain't playing maybe not i don't know i don't know free kelly aren't yeah but my my point in bringing this up is uh i would expect a team that goes through that type of injury attrition to have less than good less than previous to last year's uh advanced stats They also don't score as much as last year, and they're not going to score the same way as they did last year.
Starting point is 00:57:58 And so if you pull that kind of punch out of the lineup, seven regulars, you're going to see some stats that look bad. And the part that I feel like is being missed, you look at that in a vacuum, you're not mentioning the injuries. The other part that I think is being missed is they weathered it. They won. They still found a way to win, specifically when Matthews was out. they found a way to get the guys that we always talk about who are the guys that need to score
Starting point is 00:58:26 the core for the core four and you know who scored when matthews was out the core three all of them regularly yep um i i will say this because i think you're right but here's where they have a point coming into the season i went wait a sec they have the exact same forward group minus Tyler Bertuzzi plus Max Pacioretty on his janky contract and
Starting point is 00:58:55 who else who did they oh Stephen Lawrence like this forward group was supposed to take a step back I think and as I said by design it seems that way well like let's say Matthew scores 40 goals this year
Starting point is 00:59:12 which is an unreal season for most people that's 29 goals you have to make up that's like you could go out and sign like a seven million dollar player in free agency and be happy with them scoring 29 goals like i i sort of flagged this as a problem before the season even began hey how are they going to do this how are they going to score goals and the reason they've weathered it i think is really really really good goaltending and their defense is better yeah but the goal scoring thing i i think is a thing it is a problem it's a it's a thing but let's see everybody back and healthy you may you may literally never see that is the problem okay but is that but then is that
Starting point is 00:59:56 indicative of some sort of downward trend that means they're boring and bad or is it hey that this team has changed his dna a little bit and you've had a ton of injuries they had more injuries at one point than the avalanche the avalanche were missing everybody they were what like six seven forwards down yeah yeah well the ads were six seven players down the least were six seven forwards forwards what do you expect man right that with the with the lack of goal scoring thing like you don't need to score so many goals when you're playing great defense and you have good goaltending like why can't that be their identity where we're a low goal scoring team but the other two facets of the game defense and goaltending were really good at that well i think why couldn't
Starting point is 01:00:36 craig brube coached them into that team the rebuttal would have been though that um the rebuttal to that sorry would have been that uh they the reason they didn't win in the playoffs was because their scoring disappeared yeah but it's not it's not that team anymore you know it's their their scoring disappeared and but like now what if our defense and goaltending is better than it was in those years uh-huh you know like they can improve in that area and if they can't improve in the goal scoring why not improve in the other areas and i look at where they rank in goals for and goals against per game towards for goals for per game they're 23rd you know they're lower half of the league not great but the goals against per game they're third and but who are the teams
Starting point is 01:01:19 around them you got winnipeg they're actually second my bad um it's winnipeg in first toronto in second and then the other teams are the kings in the wild so you're just surrounded by the top teams in the nhl because this is how they're all playing hockey because this is the most successful way to play hockey i think it's because they're bad the leafs are playing a winning brand of hockey that puts them in the same category as the best teams in the league but we're upset with how they're playing i think people would claim that they're not going to stay there oh no okay like no all right okay they're they're not gonna be bad at goal scoring all the time i can do it too yeah so why don't you call me when that happens and then we'll have that discussion because what
Starting point is 01:02:00 i'm talking about is the reality of the team and what they're playing with right now i can't magically just predict that they're gonna stink in a month like what last year the leafs had like three games um there was the game where they would come out and destroy their opponent but then have to hold the fort and they couldn't really um there was they come out flat and then they have to score their way out of the pit and sometimes they could and then the most fun ones gunfights where they just goal goal goal goal goal goal goal goal goal it is six six having an overtime yeah like just can't hold a lead can't stay down here we go just slobber knocker pond hockey uh and now they're actually playing like the hockey we watch in the playoffs frankly
Starting point is 01:02:52 Yeah, they're playing playoff hockey from day one and people are complaining. You must be fun at parties. The Battle of Alberta a few years ago, Oilers Flames, that would have been 2022. I thought two things while watching that series. One, this rules. Two, neither of you were making the final.
Starting point is 01:03:18 It was really fun. It was really fun to watch, and neither team had a snowball's chance. Like, game one, Flames go up 6-2. I'm like, well, Oilers are cooked. Oilers tie it. I'm like, well, Flames are cooked, and Oilers end up winning that series in five. And then what happens? The Avalanche friggin' sweep them.
Starting point is 01:03:41 The Leafs have consistently played fun. I'm actually down for a little bit of boring. Oh, yeah. Also, I find almost, not all, but almost all brands of hockey fun if you watch closely enough. Hockey is a very entertaining sport. It leads to the first thing we talked about in today's episode, the NBA versus the NHL. The NHL product is fantastic. All hockey is great hockey.
Starting point is 01:04:08 I love a goalie duel. And I don't mean games where each goalie is facing 25 shots. No, that's not a goalie duel. I'm talking both teams are frigging shooting the lights out and neither guy can be beaten. Oh, yeah. Love a goalie duel. You're telling me you don't enjoy the Leafs
Starting point is 01:04:26 playing a more physical brand of hockey? Teams don't... They haven't adjusted their expectations yet. One of the things that I think is helping Max Pacioretty crush guys is they're not preparing to be hit by Max Pacioretty. No, I don't think they are. At all. No, he forechecks hard, too.
Starting point is 01:04:44 He's freaking huge. Yeah. Which you don't notice until he starts using it. No, there's just, it's like your favorite food's Mexican and you go to an Indian restaurant and you hate it because it's not Mexican. Like it's, they're both delicious flavors. They're just different.
Starting point is 01:05:04 Does that make sense? Yes. Listen, it is my job to bring up alternative points of view in order to challenge. And it is my job to bring up food. but I would say that I too disagree with those statements but I think that there are and we've talked about this on Sunday there are some people that are not happy with the way things are going because it's different from the set philosophy from 10 years ago that the Leafs tried all I
Starting point is 01:05:31 asked for in the offseason was for them to change something and I was looking at the roster they changed the coach the team has fundamentally changed personnel has changed to just not in the way that we all thought it would may might what they were doing was not successful it was not mm-hmm regular season but no one cares what they were doing was not successful
Starting point is 01:06:04 let's have a look at something else early returns are good yes let's go yeah and good goaltending too i mean you're allowed maddie if you want to bring up you're not though goals against per game uh the leafs actually are tied for the lead league in goals against but jesse they don't score enough at this specific one thing that i think they should a four-way tie i didn't even realize this when i was looking at the order of goals against per game it's a four-way tie for first with the jets leafs kings wild are all 2.55 goals against per game wow and then you go down the list it's dallas at five new jersey at six washington at seven edmonton at eight vegas at nine amongst those nine teams in
Starting point is 01:06:46 the top 10 and goals against per game there's not a bad team in the bunch they're all above a 600 points percentage and that's not the same thing you can say about goals for per game where you have the lightning there at second who are below 600 in points percentage and you also have the Blue Jackets at 8th, who are below 500 in a points percentage. So goals against per game seems to be more indicative of the best teams in the league. Jesse, have you considered that? I don't know. Just a quick look at some stats.
Starting point is 01:07:12 Also, can I have a quick look, since you have that stat? Sure. I'd love to have a look at power play percentage, because I think it's so interesting. The Leafs' power play was not setting the world on fire to start. They're in 20th in power play. Yeah, they were last for a big chunk of October. People are talking about what they could be doing in 5-on-5,
Starting point is 01:07:31 and i totally understand that but if that power play goes regresses to the mean there you go shut up you know people have sent me very lovely messages going here's what it means i know what it means i just think it's stupid but regresses to the mean i'll use your terminology and it goes to 20 it's 2024 guys we're in the feelings 23 percent 23 percent jesse what let's go up a little bit who's at 23 23 would be pretty high you get into the top 12 i would expect the new i expect the leafs to be in the top 10 in power play oh that's even more well that's 25 you got a 25 yeah imagine where that puts them in the goal scoring department i know we were talking about five on five goals versus five on four but power play goals traditionally as far as i remember still
Starting point is 01:08:18 count and if you have an improvement in that area even more than the leafs already have and they had a really good November power play and so far it's been okay in December I don't know there's work to be done in both categories you can say that they're 20th in power play percentage and they are uh 23rd or 22nd uh in goals for per game there's work to be done why haven't they won the cup though it's December 13th Jesse they can work on that from here on out Jesse help me out I want to see something so can you arrange the top power plays in the league uh real quick yeah so okay there's two teams above 30 which seems insane uh there's which are the devils and jets for anybody listening there's seven teams above 25 can you go to last year's season total
Starting point is 01:09:06 uh i can i want to see how many teams were above uh 25 oh shit more than i thought four top four None were above 30 Tampa, Carolina, New York, Edmonton Were all 26 and above So it's reasonable To believe And like middle of the pack is still Leafs were 24 last year
Starting point is 01:09:31 Oh wow there you go So regress to the mean And it didn't friggin help in the playoffs did it Well I mean Matthews Matthews and Marner Or sorry Matthews and Nylander were out for part of that too I give them that Schedule doesn't care I don't give it to them
Starting point is 01:09:46 No, I'm fine. Schedule doesn't give a fuck. Steve doesn't care. Steve doesn't give a shit. You got to win without... Facts don't care about your feelings, right? Nope. Right?
Starting point is 01:09:52 Steve Shapiro over here? Right? 24%. I think that's achievable for these Leafs. I do. Yeah. And then they get more goals per game. Like from here on out.
Starting point is 01:10:06 Yeah. With StoryWorth, you can grab all of your family memories and put them in a book that's just for your family. It's just for you. My Nona dangled me upside down by the feet when I was a newborn baby, and I found that out when I was 13 years old. Is that a thing that people do?
Starting point is 01:10:39 Italians do it because they believe it makes you grow taller. Oh, wow. And if you look at me, it didn't make me grow taller. It obviously just forced all the blood to my head, and that's why it's so big. Well, there you go. So here's the deal. Each week, StoryWorth emails your loved one with a thought-provoking question that you get to help pick.

Starting point is 01:11:22 dot com slash sdp storyworth.com slash sdp to save $10 on your first purchase. Can we end the Leafs segment with Max Pacioretty's family? Yeah. I think that'd be very cute to point out.
Starting point is 01:11:37 So this was when he had his 800th game in the NHL. he was playing for vegas at the time some some insider some agent named alan walsh never heard out uh this photo of patch ready and his beautiful family all of his five kids i didn't know he had so many children uh there they are yeah they're very cute yeah they are cute yeah look at those kids oh my god and it says congrats daddy on the balloon i like it how do you even know all their names that's crazy yeah it's like five yeah oh listen i'm sure if you've got five kids in the family names get mixed up oh man yeah one girl yeah did your you you have two siblings maddie
Starting point is 01:12:20 did your did your parents ever mess up your your names uh my parents mess up the name oh actually yeah uh yeah not to drag my dad but he messed up the spelling of my name on my birth certificate it it was supposed to be malin and like the french and you put madeline oh he missed an e no way did it ever get changed nope no way i don't know i like it yeah it's yours now right yeah like i'm 24 it's a little what i meant is like my parents would get mad at me and they'd accidentally call me like max which was my dog like uh you know they'd be like i call you know i call leo iggy all the time right that's yeah i don't think they would accidentally call me know where i've been i wondered yeah and that's what i think would happen like he's got four boys
Starting point is 01:13:04 and a little girl so i would imagine that uh there are some names got a whole uh whole line he does actually like yeah three forwards and two defensemen yeah that's good shit it's a good point yeah no they must play like a great shinny no they probably shoot left though he's leaving a lot of yeah he's leaving a lot of money how many stanley cup champions do you think we got there oh there's a couple i would do two yeah two rings we're gonna get she's going on the pwhl for sure can you imagine uh can you imagine like it'll be like the setters like all the patch are ready that'd be crazy it'd be kind of it would be cool be very cool hockey's a very family game that way yeah it's like if you got those genes you got those genes man um anyway uh love that jesse i'm
Starting point is 01:13:51 so glad you brought that up uh probably a good segue to say that alan and i are recording together this afternoon oh in the studio with max patch ready's five kids no in studio yeah alan is in town what he went to the game last night and is having lunch or breakfast with max patch ready as we record this are you supposed to be saying that well yeah it's fine now he's his agent when's he coming in he's coming in like two i get to see alan today i don't know that yeah okay isn't that cool yeah it is uh now like him what the hell let's move on to some other things um something you should know uh and we know this because cj was looking for these jerseys um uh the four nations jerseys will not be available if you can believe this until mid-january dude we started the
Starting point is 01:14:39 show talking about the nhl and the strides it's making in catching the nba we really just talked about the nba's quote-unquote failure it's an opportunity but you must seize the opportunity isn't it and like the nhl does so many good things like does the nhl do so many good things or are people just really good at hockey um i think it might just be that because then stuff like this happens that reminds me i wouldn't trust the people who run the nhl with a tim's order you're gonna fuck it up like i'm gonna ask for two cream and you're gonna get me like a peppermint tea or something like i they had time how on earth so it's not that's the christmas rush here It's not an NHL issue.
Starting point is 01:15:21 It's a fanatics issue in that they have to prioritize the production of the NHL jerseys. This is their first time with the jerseys for the league. And the timelines are very short for them to get this thing going. So they didn't have enough time to produce it in time. Okay. Question then. Which is bad foresight because you had some time to prepare for this. Question then.
Starting point is 01:15:43 Can one company do frigging everything? Probably not. Who? What? league doesn't fanatics have a deal with that the league doesn't exist so they have a deal with the mlb they have a deal with the nhl yeah they have a deal with like are they involved in basketball basketball basketball jeez suffering suck a dash sorry i taught it to a putty tat um anyway that's an old reference i'm old as fuck um no like they uh like all i ever hear with
Starting point is 01:16:19 jerseys is there's delays maybe one company shouldn't be doing freaking everything i think you got a good point and that maybe their production's a little taxed here and this leads to jerseys for a tournament being available like weeks before the tournament and not available for christmas when they should be available oh what was the one we heard the other day in uh the ohl uh freaking um certain teams in the oh haven't even gotten their away jerseys yet yes yeah that wasn't fanatics no it wasn't fanatic that was that was a different company oh still yeah whatever like yeah yeah because there was a switch over and they weren't ready so they've been wearing homes all day i think the switch i don't know if it's screwing up i think the
Starting point is 01:17:03 switch overs from jersey manufacturers might be a little more difficult than we realize and that there's a lot of processing involved and usually you sign that deal a couple years out so there is some lead up but i think with the ohl it dovetailed with the commissioner switch and so maybe that deal didn't get done in time that's what it feels like to me i don't know i don't know and i don't know if there's manufacturing restrictions as well like the one even if you sign a contract are you not permitted to make those jerseys until a certain start date you know but for copyright legal reasons you know like i don't know i'm not i don't know the inner workings of these contracts I don't know. I feel like we criticized the PWHL for, you know, they don't have a logo and they don't have this.
Starting point is 01:17:45 And now there's the OHL thing and now there's the World Cup of Hockey thing. And I just feel like this keeps happening. And actually, maybe making jerseys is way harder than I thought. Yeah, that's what I was trying to drive home the point. Like there's probably a lot of steps in this process that we're not realizing that lead to these delays. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:18:06 I would imagine that if they were to do it again, they would do it differently. Cause I would be, if I was 12 years old or 10 years old, I would have been asking for a team Canada Jersey for sure. That would have been the only thing I would have wanted. And maybe you can buy in reserve, but it's still,
Starting point is 01:18:22 it's not the same as getting it on the day. Now they're going to have to settle for a copy of hockey, rants and raves. I know, I know. Dylan Cousins is somebody that Elliot Freedman's brought up several times, and it made it into 32 Thoughts. And Dylan Cousins is a player that is, quote, wanted badly.
Starting point is 01:18:42 Yeah, how come? Well, he's struggling in Buffalo. Oh, yeah? Which means he hates Buffalo. First player to ever do it. And it can't be the Sabres organization. It has to be that he doesn't like Buffalo and wants to leave. can i ask the sabers uh not fan base no ask them ask the fan base too no no because the fan base
Starting point is 01:19:03 will not relent on the jacket no no no no no my question is for the sabers and uh not their fans okay um because i think their fans are with me on this one what are you fucking stupid are you gonna do this again there's a forward not working out here so let's trade him what's wrong with you watch some fucking hockey learn something about the team that you run are you stupid how the fuck is this even a discussion 23 years get a brain seven million bucks a year and it's a long-term deal okay no that's great is what i'm wait wait sorry what is it again it's a long-term deal and he's making 7.1 million but yeah because they they signed him after i assume it was after his 30 plus goal season yeah and he hasn't quite lived up to that right but the
Starting point is 01:19:53 question remains what are you stupid well and i think we need to acknowledge that the sabers have spent to the cap twice in the past 14 years and they are i don't know probably not well but i would think that they're using that as an example as to why they don't want to you you bring it remember we talked about the kevin adams uh press conference never compare themselves to themselves you are an outlier the kevin adams press conference he says well if we get a guy and he's making seven million but like what about five years from now we i i would say to kevin that that ain't your problem kev you're not going to be here no general manager is uh unless you're like weird you know harry syndon or you work in canada where nobody gets fired um the the thing with
Starting point is 01:20:38 dylan cousins is it's 7.1 million until 2030 he's 23 years old he has already scored 30 goals you think he might get better i feel like he might and i'm not saying they're going to trade him but it's popping up and so you know my thing with the sabers is they clearly have an internal cap and it's clearly five to six million less than what the actual cap is and it's clear that uh when players don't perform they're stuck doing what they're doing until they move somebody with the seven or eight million dollar cap thing out and then they'll be able to make some moves like and like they so you held on to one guy one guy and it's tage thompson it's gone well get a brain like i i can't believe they're even thinking about well and when you look at their
Starting point is 01:21:26 what they're paying like a guy like jason zucker who's a good player and they talked about you know kevin's like well he's been a steady he's a forward and he's playing well for the sabers pack your shit yeah uh well he makes five million just this year so yeah i actually do think they're probably going to trade him if they're not into the trade deadline but this guy he's got 20 points in 29 games sucker and i look at that and i go okay you're good with five million for that but seven million for a 23 year old forward who's a center who might be have an off start and guess what your entire team is i uh i don't understand this hockey club do not get it i'd be thrilled if the leafs got them yeah no call them 13 points in 29 games that's why they're upset
Starting point is 01:22:09 Kevin, are you trading Dylan Cousins? I'm thinking about it. Yep. Okay. So there's a minus. Have you called any team within our division? Yeah. You're fired.
Starting point is 01:22:22 Get a brain. Now, nobody said he's called any team within the division. No, no. I know. I'm making up a hypothetical situation. I mean, Sam Reinhardt's a Panther. Well, UC Parsons is another name from a struggling team that has come up. 23-year-old center.
Starting point is 01:22:37 um is from nashville from nashville he uh frege said that he's the next guy to go in nashville thomasino dante fabbro and he said the next guy is going to be uc parson why i guess they're not happy with him and it's easier to get rid of a guy named uc parson and then it is steven stamkos you just signed two guys on the back nine what are you doing i guess sorry you so parson i guess bad teams he's not getting very often don't get there by accident but i boy i'm not understanding any of this i mean parson and i mean his career high is 25 points in 45 games he's not getting in every game this year you gotta talk about mike oh sorry he's not he's not getting in every game this year on a team that's already bad and doesn't have a lot of center depth they clearly don't
Starting point is 01:23:28 trust him you're and i think i think that's a situation where the agent is going okay we got to go if you don't call barry trotz before your morning coffee you're a bad agent seventh round bad gm seventh round pick that made it and is playing games that's pretty cool gotta get rid of him as soon as possible and dude here's what brad for living might like uh he's six foot three and 212 pounds ah he's big now at least don't i don't think they need a guy like that i don't think they need a guy like that here here let me give you one robertson for parson and how close is that to a thing like how close is that to something that makes both could use a new start now we're cooking right you have to think the leafs are having discussions with teams going
Starting point is 01:24:15 we might need to find this guy a new spot jesse thoughts phil could use some goals do you think do you think he's getting back in robertson no if there's a trade partner for robertson he depending on the i assume it'll be um decent value your other option is waivers right and you're not doing that no i i don't think that makes any sense i would rather force him into the lineup than lose him on waivers a healthy lineup doesn't include nick robertson no dude an injured lineup doesn't include him we saw that last night yeah yeah i i hope there's a trade partner out there for him me too because i do think he can be successful in the league i just Don't know if this style of play is going to fit him.
Starting point is 01:24:54 It doesn't look like it's going to be here. You're the Preds. What do you have to frigging lose? Well, yeah, I agree. And a couple other things of note I just thought that you'd find. First off, the seaweed man is probably going to float out of Vancouver sometime soon here. No!
Starting point is 01:25:09 Hasn't worked well. And I wondered specifically. I'm like, I know that it's interdivisional, and I know these two teams are going to be fighting each other, but doesn't a reunion with Edmonton just make so much sense there? because it would take the salary obligations away from the Canucks that would give him flexibility. And the Edmonton Oilers clearly like him,
Starting point is 01:25:29 clearly used him a lot last year. It just feels like that's where he should play. Is that a trade or waivers? Could be travers. I don't know. Like New York Rangers. If there's a defenseman available and they shoot right, immediately I'm...
Starting point is 01:25:44 Ottawa. Oh. Good point. every right-handed defenseman available i'm like ottawa those guys i mean utah needs defense bad enough that they claim dakota friggin murmurs um who has not played since last season right i played three games in the ahl on a conditioning stint um unless they scouted him real hard in toronto during those three games um which is possible uh my guess is uh is they're on the phone interesting uh last thing i thought you guys would find this particularly interesting
Starting point is 01:26:21 at the board of governors meeting a couple of team governors according to elliot friedman indicated if they have someone playing in the four nations who could be traded they're going to try to make the move before the four nations so that's well before the trade deadline and the reason for that is john tavaris in the 2014 olympics and the injury he sustained kept him out the rest of the year right and i think that torpedoed the islanders chances at the play oh no no they went to the playoffs that year didn't they missed i want to say they narrowly missed right and so their thinking is if he gets injured if so and so gets injured in the four nations uh that's worse somehow than them getting injured in the nhl which is hilarious but that seems to be the well it is the same shit
Starting point is 01:27:07 It's hosted by the NHL and the NHLPA with NHL players. But it's not my club team. Right. Islanders did not make the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. Okay. So it's 15-16. They went to the second round? 15-16.
Starting point is 01:27:25 Had to be. Where Tavares scored the overtime. Oh, I don't remember. Yeah. So long story short, that might mean that some big names were on the move before the trade deadline because those are good players. And they all have Italian last names. No?
Starting point is 01:27:43 No. You don't want to do that bit? Okay, so there's a rumor out there and it's unconfirmed and it's probably not even possible that the NHL is pushing the IIHF and the Olympics to allow players of Italian ancestry to play for Team Italy in Milan
Starting point is 01:28:00 when the Olympics go there next year because it would make the Italian team instantly pretty competitive. now steve uh instead of hanging out with his kids uh decided at 5 30 in the evening when he found out about this to put an entire list of italians uh i'll have you know together one of them was in bed and the other was watching tv oh okay all right so go through your list who's on the team steve so this is the preliminary team that i came up with gabe velarde marco rossi kyle palmieri yes marco rossi plays for austria shut up cole perfetti maclin celebrini tyler
Starting point is 01:28:34 Does he have Italian heritage? Okay, so I looked it up, and people were like, um, he's Austrian. And I go, wait, Rossi must be an Italian last name. And I Googled it. Not only is it an Italian last name, it is the most common surname in Italy. Tyler Bertuzzi, Ryan Donato, Frank Vetrano,
Starting point is 01:28:54 Marcus Foligno, or Nick, Adam Fantilli, Andrew Mangiapane. On defense, oh, Team Sword of Italy is a world of hurt on defense. Dante Fabro, Mario Ferraro, Victor Mancini. We finally got to a point where I had to put their first names. Victor Mancini, Brandon Carlo, Mark Delgazo, Robert Bortuzzo, and Annette Sebastian-Casa and Mikey DiPietro were my goalies.
Starting point is 01:29:23 Now, people were pointing out that there are players with non-Italian-sounding last names who are Italian as well. You mean like Glynn? Like Glynn, yes. And you know what should have been the clue? Vinny. Day or name?
Starting point is 01:29:42 Trocek. Oh, is he Italian? Vinny Trocek apparently is known to make stuff at Christmas time or whatever. I just want to say, when you initially made your list, you didn't do any research on people who might be Italian.
Starting point is 01:29:58 no i just looked at the last just clicked on oh that's an italian sounding last name and threw them on the team italian i'm pretty sure i went 20 for 20 though yeah no no you nailed it no yeah bertuzzi i bet he's uh freaking australian or something i think your thought process here is is interesting okay anyway i thought it was fun it's i mean the team's not horrible yeah no no it'd be i mean i'm trying to think of on the top pair uh sweden czech republic a lot of us germany be below switzerland switzerland for sure i don't know we're talking we're talking like eight eighth seed yeah if we're ranking them on paper it's not that good now can i know he's norwegian norwegian he's norwegian born
Starting point is 01:30:50 there's no way matt zuccarello doesn't have italian ancestry oh yeah you're telling me Zuccarello? Oh, yeah. Come on now. That's the thing about Europe is everything is like about a half an hour from each other, too. So when people are like, I'm French, I'm Italian, we're so different. It's like you guys live like an hour away from each other. Man, that's like me saying to somebody from Thunder Bay, we're completely different.
Starting point is 01:31:13 Like, no. A bunch of us. But I'll let you think that. A bunch of Swiss players have Italian last names. Of course they do. And guess what else they have? German last names. And you know what else they have?
Starting point is 01:31:23 French last names. That's so crazy. Because all our official languages states couldn't be. Why do they have to speak all three languages, Steve? Is it because it's a small country surrounded by three countries? I don't understand why you're upset. Stop yelling at me. Europeans make me laugh because they're like, we are so ingrained in our shit.
Starting point is 01:31:43 I am British. I am French. And they are very different languages that are all somewhat based on the same language. I get it. but it's like guys you're like the reason you're like that is because you know a hundred years ago it was a horse and buggy and nobody left with you know nobody went don't be on 20 miles from their house but now come on i think you're upset with europeans as a whole i think that they can just dial it down a little bit is it because you don't have to be so nationalistic we're all humans
Starting point is 01:32:10 is it because tony hand is from britain no i like tony hand it doesn't sound like oh we figured it You hate Tony Hand. I don't hate Tony Hand. You hate him on principle. I don't hate him on principle. You hate Scotland. You hate William Wallace. Steve, what did Tony Hand accomplish during his NHL career?
Starting point is 01:32:30 Man, that's a great question. Nothing, but he was really good in training camp. And after training camp, he played like a little cup of coffee in the WHL. And he was a point-of-game player there. But then he got homesick. So he went home. He played in the BHL for a while. He scored well over 200 points per game.
Starting point is 01:32:53 Oh, sorry, sorry. Per season. Per game, I would believe it. 200 per season. That's almost like Gretzky-like. That's so many points. That's Gretzky-like. Well, it's funny that you should say that because they called him the Scottish Gretzky.
Starting point is 01:33:07 No way. Yeah. Wow. Tony Hand from Edinburgh, Scotland. Wow, wow. That's cool. We should talk more about him. I think we should, too.
Starting point is 01:33:15 Bring up his DB. talk about the same stuff though make sure that if you're going to bring it up use the same three talking points every time i found book find nothing else do no more research i found book three the tony hand experience i like that yo the time i would listen to i would listen to that was the tony handbook if you the tony handbook no oh that's good yeah stop it we already got the name that's all that's half the book yeah half the book is just a catchy name you got it yeah tony hand maybe he's on team italy because his name is anthony because his name is tony oh tony stop tony hand no no oh no we're not gonna let you do that i'm not gonna
Starting point is 01:34:00 let you do that uh last thing before we go to the press conference soft talks have actually already begun between the nhl and the nhlpa and it is gary and i mentioned this they said stanley cup finals gary wants to have this done ideally by game one because he is a state of the union right before that so that'd be a big victory for both sides and freach brings up an interesting point he said i wonder if it'd be possible to paper a new agreement by then because even with a lot of good lawyers it's a lot of writing shit down you know and lawyers are like hey you know we could say this sentence in five words or we could say it in 25 sentences in a manifesto and they will take the 25 sentences um so uh if he said a couple of good lawyers pointed out that
Starting point is 01:34:43 if you were simply modifying a current agreement it would be no problem so uh that could be really good it'd be nice to have some set on that what i'm curious about with this is term do they go five years? Do they go seven years? Do they go ten years? When the no clause at year seven like they've done all that before. How long is this going to last? I thought the CJ show breakdown of this was really good and really informative and
Starting point is 01:35:07 really like CJ. You talked a lot about Ovechkin as well. So that's not me punting on the answer, except it is. But I'm saying we have another show where they go much deeper. I haven't had a chance to listen to today. Well, it's quite good. Fine then. You have to
Starting point is 01:35:24 listen to that. Let's do the press coverage. hear that it's your money calling it wants a promotion elevate your savings with the scotia high interest savings account always earn high regular interest rates that grow the more you save and invest conditions apply visit scotiabank.com hisa to learn more scotia bank you're richer than you think the steve dangle press conference i got a tweet from f gogan on twitter they tagged me an article from the athletic from a guy named down goes brown never heard they said would be a great topic for the show and i think it'd be a good topic for the press conference and i'm not gonna do the whole thing because that's
Starting point is 01:36:22 just if it's down goes brown it would take us a whole podcast i know that but downs down goes brown decided to rank mark messier nhl leadership award winners such as by how poorly they held up he's such a shit i love him but i love him now the reason i got tagged in this tweet is because this show the steve dangle podcast has a history with the mark messier nhl leadership award in that we discovered what was it last season or year before that this is just an award that mark messier is the only voter on and he simply gets to name a guy and give him an award yeah it is an official nhl trophy that's done by one human and he just says you this season you get my award and we all imagine if the heart was just awarded by gretzky and we all freaked out about how
Starting point is 01:37:25 ridiculous that is so now down goes brown who's probably also stumbled on this little known fact and he has ranked how poorly the leadership award winners have held up so let's do the top five here at number five shea weber who won it in 2016 uh down goes brown wrote was it a weird pick at the time not really the offer sheet thing was weird but it had been years ago and by 2016 weber was well respected as one of the league's best defensemen he was also very very clearly a predator for life the predators i love him the predators traded him a week after he won the messier award that's how great the messier award held up you know what i criticized mark bergevin for trading suban where's uh david poyle's criticism uh after trading the the mark messier award winner
Starting point is 01:38:26 what are you stupid captain for life number four is steven stamkos in 2023 oh was it a weird pick at the time only in the sense that a lot of us were surprised to realize stamkos hadn't won it already and then he wrote but then stamkos lasted only one more year in tampa and if you remember that september so two months after he wins his general manager refused to negotiate with him And he shows up to camp and goes, what the fuck? Yeah, the leadership award winner shows up in publicly a cost management. That's hilarious. And then Down Goes Brown writes about how he left the next summer, as we all know.
Starting point is 01:39:07 And the Lightning would rather have Jake Gensel. He regularly writes stuff that just, it's so good, it makes me angry. I know, I'm upset at how talented he is. Number three is crazy. Well, at number three is Matt Sundin, who I didn't know, won the award in 2008. Was it a weird pick at the time? That depended on who you believe. The story here actually starts in 07-08, which saw the Leafs headed for their third straight playoff miss.
Starting point is 01:39:34 General Manager John Ferguson Jr. had been fired, and interim replacement Cliff Fletcher... In his late 70s. Decided to finally pull the trigger on a long overdue rebuild... I'm sure he retired soon after. That would include his veteran captain, Sundin, who had a no-trade clause, though. After a few days of dramatic deliberations, he invoked it to block any deal. So in the middle of winning, it was the first time a player had won the Messi award and then never played another game for the team he was honored for leading. But not the last!
Starting point is 01:40:06 Checks notes to your history of the award, but somehow would not be the last. Wow. So Sundin won the award, never again played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Unbelievable pick, Messier. You're doing so good. You've done so good with this award. You should definitely have an award where you just get to pick a guy. The only guy!
Starting point is 01:40:26 Daniel Alfredson in 2013 won it. Was it a weird pick at the time? Somewhat. Mainly because Alfredson had recently made headlines by answering, Probably not when asked if the Sens could come back from a playoff deficit. Is that leadership? I don't think it sounds like it, but I am not Mark Messier. Right, Sean McIndoe?
Starting point is 01:40:52 Days after winning the award, days after winning the award, Alfredson shocked the hockey world by bailing on the Senators once a free agency started signing a one-year deal in Detroit. So Alfredson won the award. A week later said, you know what? Enough of being a leader of this team. I know I won an award for it.
Starting point is 01:41:13 I am now a Red Wings fan. I like the next sentence. In explaining his decision to leave, he alluded to the Senators reneging on an under-the-table deal that surely sounded like hapster convention, which the team had to publicly deny. And number one on the list, Jacob Truba, who won the award last, I guess it would have been June? Yeah. Last end of June, July. And we all know what happened with Jacob Truba come August when his general manager said, screw your family. I want to trade you. And Jacob Truba said, no, I'm not going to move. And then now we reach a point where Jacob Truba said, still screw you. Jacob Truba is no longer the captain of the Rangers. He is no longer on the Rangers at all. He is a Anaheim duck. And that is the history of the leadership award. The magic of the way Sean writes an article is that he doesn't do it like when Steve Simmons writes an article, he is very clearly stabbing somebody and twisting the knife. Right. Like there's there's every there's a bar. And that's what Steve Simmons does.
Starting point is 01:42:13 He fires barbs and people love that. They've loved him for years for that. And he's got some crazy takes. And I disagree with most of them. But you cannot deny the man's success. Sean taps you on one shoulder and walks by. Well, he goes, hey, hey, hey, have a look at this and just leaves. and if you look at sean's articles they've all got the he doesn't need a bibliography he's got hyperlinks to everything that he mentions and he'll make like a comment you'll be like i vaguely remember that and it'll click through to an article and you go oh my god i forgot about this completely dude please my buy my book i have a family and a mortgage but he regularly just makes me want to crumple up everything i've ever written yeah he's amazing and throw it in the garbage like
Starting point is 01:42:55 he's so frigging good and the thing about sean is he's been doing it a lebron james level for so long oh like i remember reading sean like way back like a decade now and and he's still cooking up uh great stuff so definitely read all of his content in the athletic yeah he made a youtube video with bloggy salming about the canadian roster for the 2010 olympics how long he's been he's been at this a long time yeah yeah um and at an elite level so last thing i just want to do here is shout out some performances from last night because last night was a wild night in hockey it was the nhl the worst scheduled league in the world love scheduling everybody on one night and then next night we get two games so uh consistently we get this every like tonight
Starting point is 01:43:42 there's one game uh sends play the hurricanes you know hot action there in carolina um and last night we got 14 games so last night amongst the 14 games we got a 9-2 win by the penguins we got a round of applause big applause you know what it's time for the question adam how come you haven't acknowledged that the penguins are good yet they they just beat the other last place team in the nhl that's so crazy hey no there were oh i'm sorry pittsburgh you're right hey can i just Can I just add to that? Oh. John Bucci Gross from ESPN tweeted this.
Starting point is 01:44:24 Jake Gensel had a hat trick last night. Yes, yes. Sorry. No, go ahead. He's on pace for 49 goals, 39 assists, and 88 points. And what John said was... Weird way to say Brian Russ. John said, I don't understand why the Penguins wouldn't sign a productive 30-year-old veteran player that wanted to stay.
Starting point is 01:44:42 They will spend the next 10 years hoping to draft, develop, or trade, or sign for a Jake Gensel. Damn. I think he listens to... I don't know, man. Maybe there's no plan, Steve. Adam, I think John Butchergross listens to our show, but only the parts where you're talking. So the Pens lit it up last night,
Starting point is 01:45:01 and that's a team that can't score at all. Can't stop a puck. They can't do anything. But last night they showed what they can do against a not great Montreal team right now. Penguins fans, I'm not doing this. No. Good for you.
Starting point is 01:45:12 No, no, no. Yeah, good for them. If they meet in the playoffs, i give that series to the pens 10 out of 10 times if they played montreal yeah okay you know what happened last time they met in the playoffs montreal montreal the the pens win was one of three giant drubbings last night the second one is the one adam mentioned adjacently um the tampa bay lightning beat up on the calgary flames and the jakes and lee eight to three was the final score and nikita kucherov had five points which is a shame because kadri scored like one of the
Starting point is 01:45:49 sexiest goals of this season sorry uh not five points five assists six points oh my god and nazim kadri in the middle of all that hopped over a man did a 360 spin scored a goal and they lost a2 i know so the most insane goal of all time that's so leafy it reminded me of it i was gonna tweet it but i didn't it reminds me of do you guys ever know the um the los angeles angels tweet that goes that went viral the whole time they had shohei and mike trout yes there's a there's one that everybody just screenshots and quote tweets whenever the angels do anything it'll be like shohei otani just set a record that babe ruth once had in 1932 and mike trout had five home runs in the angels seven three loss that's yo that's that's hockey twitter is matt tomic
Starting point is 01:46:37 Every time I see the Angels highlights, it's Mike Trout hit three home runs and raised his average to 528. Well, Shohei Otami did something that hasn't been done since Tungsten Arm O'Doyle of the 1921 Akron Groomsmen as the Tigers defeated the Angels 8-3. Yes. Like, it's so good. That's one of the best baseball Twitter memes that's gone around in the last, like, couple years since that tweet went viral. Brilliant. Kadri's goal last night reminded me of that moment where everyone's like, oh, my God, this Kadri goal.
Starting point is 01:47:11 Yeah, the Flames lost 8-3. And everybody's like, hey, yo, the Flames are still over 500. No, they're not. No, they're not. Are they over Bettman 500? In sport, there's wins and losses, and they've lost more than they've won. There are Bettman losses in the NHL, though, which have allowed them to not.
Starting point is 01:47:27 The Flames are 14-11-5. So Adam's upset at that. Akron groomsmen. The last big defeat was the Edmonton Oilers, who after a slow start, like everybody was we're talking like, oh, they did it again. They're back to where they should be. They're fine. They beat up the best team in National Hockey League, the Minnesota Wilds, seven to one.
Starting point is 01:47:48 And I would like to file a formal complaint, Zach Hyman, you friggin piece of crap. What happened? So Dreisaitl shot the puck at an empty net. Hyman was standing in front so uncontested that he tried to get out of the way and the puck accidentally hit his stick, so it counted as his goal, taking away a goal from my fantasy player, Leon
Starting point is 01:48:11 Dreisaitl. How dare you? Leon Dreisaitl had a goal and three assists. Why are you complaining? Because he could have had two goals and two assists, which is worth more. Surprisingly, amongst all of that, Connor McDavid, only two assists. Wow, what a bum.
Starting point is 01:48:28 You beat a team 7-1 and only get two assists from Connor McDavid. Is he washed you have to ask the question and the last thing that we must discuss and we cannot go a single moment longer thank you without the most important thing that happened in the national hockey league last night because it is like haley's comet collided with the moon oh wow scott lawton had four fucking goals in one he had four goals it is wait hit him with the four one of the most unlikely things that i've ever seen on a nhl ice rink scott lawton scored four goals now did they win two they won four one he scored all of the goals for philadelphia that's
Starting point is 01:49:13 unbelievable but two of the goals were empty nets if we're whatever if we're being serious two of the goals were empty nuts and he ruined his hat trick by getting a fourth goal you suck Because it's no longer a hat trick. If we want to take a quick peek at his four goals, one comes on a breakaway where he takes a giant clapper. So Scott Lawton here is dancing on his own at the end of the blue line, looking for a puck that'll just sneak out and get to his way. And thankfully, it does to exactly where he is.
Starting point is 01:49:47 And he goes to the other end of the ice, stops here at the face-off dot, winds up, claps it. goal. Beautiful, beautiful little breakaway goal there to put Philly up 1-0. Who's 77 for the Wings? I was looking at 53 for the Wings. A lot of errors here.
Starting point is 01:50:06 Let's go back here. Who's 77 for the Wings? Jesse's on it. What happened here? 77 on the Wings. That must have been a turnover by 25. Yeah, yeah. I can't show you the actual footage on replay. From the NHL edge view, it looks like he just backpassed it
Starting point is 01:50:22 to nobody. That's Simon Edmondson. oh okay um i'll show you matt if you want to pull that off i'll show you guys actually if you actually want to see like what happened on that turnover i can show you this uh the highlight here it's not it's not the worst thing in the world as egregious it looks yeah so here it is the turnover happens here it's just it kind of skips by a little poke and it goes you know like i don't know how jesse i'll be honest with you that's not great it's not great no but i can't see on this camera angle how much the player got the puck so you'll see here uh no it doesn't it doesn't even go back to see because you know the boards is like in the way okay it's fine you can
Starting point is 01:50:57 see we're one goal in here yeah we're one goal into four like we're just talking no it's wrong you got somewhere to be uh well well we got we got our other shit we got we got yeah so uh next one you you asked to see it i was showing you what you asked and then you stopped looking right so i don't know what to do here um next one was the shorthanded try by scott lawton um it's a little break uh great defense here by the philadelphia flyers they get a little break away two on one adam hates two on one scott lawton one-timer goal i just that's the nhl 24 goal you score every single time now this empty netter is a decent empty netter and the last empty netter is the one we got to talk about here because connect me finds lawton who's breaking out of
Starting point is 01:51:44 the zone very normal empty netter but the empty netter we might have to take umbridge with is this garnet hathaway scott lawton back and forth so they both break out of the zone it's scott lawton and garnet hathaway going up both together lawton passes to hathaway hathaway says no you've got three i'm gonna pass to you and what does lawton do passes it back to hathaway and then they get the little goal so it's them going back and forth lawton gets uh hathaway gets the free assist lawton gets the empty netter four goals miracle performance by scott lawton he had more than Doubled his season goal. Yeah, he had more goals last night than he did in the 20-plus games before it.
Starting point is 01:52:23 Amazing. Unbelievable. Good for him. Yeah. You know what? He is worth a first. Hey, listen. Detroit is bad.
Starting point is 01:52:32 Yep. And, you know, there's a couple things I'd like to just quickly highlight before the Leafs go and fucking blow one to them tomorrow night. I hope that doesn't happen. Oh, you're not. Oh, he's not wearing his headphones. You're not wearing your headphones at all. The outro music has been playing.
Starting point is 01:52:47 What are you doing? Oh, I'm sorry. Patrick Hayden has three goals this year. And Petrie and Sherrata, their second line. Second line defense. No, that's not. I didn't know. I was like, what are you doing?
Starting point is 01:52:58 I'm sorry. Sometimes my ears get hot. And then I take the headphones off. Sorry. All right, you wrap it up. Wrap it up. Wrap it up. It's back.
Starting point is 01:53:07 It's back. No, no, no. Adam, do you have any final thoughts? Petrie, Sherrata. Do you have anything else? What are we doing here? Petrie, Sherrata. Oh, you stopped.
Starting point is 01:53:14 Maddie, stop the recording. Oh, all right. Start it, start it, start it. There we go. Now we're ending. Petrie Chirot. Petrie Chirot. Let's go.
