Starting point is 00:00:00 the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake new week new us new us right no no i'm the same totally new if anything i've gotten worse yeah wow okay all right fine they're the faith in jesse and steve is about the same for me it's new adam guys new adam anybody who says that hasn't changed yeah what do you guys know okay uh you know why i feel like a new adam why it's because i know mark sorry no it's because i know mark bergevin's listening to our show but isn't that cool that nhl gm is listening to our show we have confirmation that mark bergevin is listening to the show because mark bergevin Well, from the actions of Mark Bergevin himself.
Starting point is 00:00:55 He traded for Eric Stahl, guys. Therefore, ergo, listening to us, specifically me, I want you to know that I gave – I was trying to signal Kyle Dubas with it. Kyle obviously has been too busy for us, doesn't care, doesn't love us the way he used to. Mark Bergevin giving us a little bit of love here. and trading a couple of low-risk assets for Eric Stahl, a guy that the Leafs could have used. You know what? I know why Mark Burgevan listens to our show.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Why? Well, the number one reason is Adam's hockey expertise. I wasn't the one who suggested Eric Stahl. It was you. Number two, he needs something to listen to when he's in the gym getting his swole on. Yo, he is looking swole. I'm wondering if, with that hair,
Starting point is 00:01:42 I wonder if he's got to tie that back in a ponytail yet when he's doing bench press. like you can't have that get in his eye right is it a top bun is it a back bun like what's he do it just falls to the side perfectly as it should and he does I hate to say it but Mark Bergevin
Starting point is 00:01:58 does curls in the squat rack but it's not the insult that you think it is he just he just takes what you would typically squat and just just one arm bicep curls next January instead of the regular Royal Rumble I want
Starting point is 00:02:14 to see nhl gm's royal rumble bergevin win 30 men in one man out one man standing sorry bergevin probably wins right all i want to see is the leotards oh no that includes lou right lose the gm technically i'm just sorry for some reason i can't i have this image in my head of just jim benning in a singlet yeah walking out like like bob backland's return at the royal rumble i i i think i was my brain instantly went the same place yours did steve it's like not who's gonna win but who am i gonna feel most sorry for you know wow okay like you like jim's very good at hockey very good at developing and drafting i don't think jim would be the best in the wrestling ring and i think bergevin wins that heads hands down and i think he's got to
Starting point is 00:03:13 take down lou lamorello uh because i don't think there's because i don't think like who else is going to match up with those guys lou's got the secret weapon and alliances on his side but mark bergevin's got the brock lesnar dilemma where you know you're just everyone's going to be gunning for you because you're the big guy but sooner or later drew mcintyre is going to show up and then you got problems you can't last that long you can't just outlast everybody mark so it's got to be someone who's crafty you know i want to know how kyle dubas is going to analytics this gm royal rumble i want to know how he's going to do it i think he finds a good he's going to have to find somebody that can because he he's going to be technique right he's going to have to find
Starting point is 00:03:59 somebody that has bashing power so a bergevin might be a good ally to have mike you know like i also think you know for someone like bergman maybe a stan bowman as a as an ally because again crafty prone to dumb mistakes but crafty um you know stuff like that i think like you know you got to look at that that sort of situation who's the gm in florida anymore because it's not talent anymore is it uh the gm in florida is bill zito oh bill zito also i have some i have some outside guys i'm giving uh like i'm ranking pretty high in the royal rumble gm power ranking all right all right let's go so three guys who look at the look up pictures of them now okay rob blake and steve eiserman they can all play tomorrow they're still in great shape and if they're in
Starting point is 00:04:48 the royal rumble i'm picking them like to finish at least top five but all of them all three of them especially rob look at look at rob's the fucking pecs okay i'm typing in rob blake pecs right now damn google show me this man's balls okay let me try and he's got he's got the um he's got a great promo face he does he got a promo like just look at you like you're dirt oh that's rob blake and you know who we are also forgetting though because you went for the big and bad you know you can't teach just unbridled rage and i want to see someone just hit pierre dorian in the right spot and he's just gonna hulk up he's just gonna oh the sick of his brother and he's just gonna get in there and start throwing drinks all over the place and just wreck shop
Starting point is 00:05:47 it's instead of a chair it's just a coffee it's just an iced coffee not the coffee just all these like gms in the corner like just covering their burnt faces because he's just whipping piping hot coffees like the kind of coffee kramer sued over just at his fellow gms oh it's gonna be great uh this is a great idea we did not pre-plan this no i think we i think we need to power rank more gms it's good eiserman i feel like wouldn't be eiserman wouldn't be dumb enough to join early right well it's not your choice right it's random order is it not oh and he would he'd he's a guy who would he'd have like an alliance with like julian
Starting point is 00:06:34 breezebaugh right until one of them stabs the other in the back right right one catches the other about to do something untoward like randy orton and edge had a bit of something going until edge was like hey randy you i saw that and they just they weren't able to get over it ended up costing edge in the end what about sorry go ahead i was gonna ask is don waddell an angry guy oh let's look at don waddell's smart yeah waddell what did he do it was the the hurricanes wouldn't pay him to be the gm and then some other so he basically went out to another team and i forget who it was was it the wild who ended up having to take paul fenton instead and he went to the wild and said well how much for my to me for me to be the gm and then they said this much
Starting point is 00:07:25 and he said to uh kane's ownership okay it's going to be this much now and they said okay i guess because the wild like he literally there was a team out there and i forget i think it was the wild because i think it had something to do with that michael russo um crazy article with paul and then maybe i'm mixing two things but don waddell not only is great for the hurricanes in terms of negotiation is don waddell's don waddell is don waddell's best advocate that guy got money out of an ownership group that did not want to pay him i looked up the story because i was i remembered it along the same lines adam and it was the minnesota wild who he was a potential uh gm candidate for right and then that's when he got the extension for three years from carolina
Starting point is 00:08:07 Aren't they glad they kept him? Because what a great job he's done. Holy smokes. Like, great, great GM. Now I'm just imagining the crowd reaction for everyone's entrance. And Don Waddell's would be, bunch of jerks, bunch of jerks, bunch of jerks. I think if you were to have an all-presidents, I think the Leafs win that one. Because too many broken bones.
Starting point is 00:08:33 The presidents are older, right? So a lot of them are just going to sit to the side and go, I give up. All coaches' battle, though, might go to the Hurricanes. Like, I know Sheldon Keefe's tough, but Rod Brindamore. Rod the bod. Yeah. Pretty tough to beat Rod Brindamore. Rod Brindamore makes Sheldon Keefe look like a mid-card.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Yeah, totally. 100%. Rod Brindamore is just a beast. So, anyway, there's your power rankings. all i want to spend this entire show on so in the gm royal rumble in the coaches royal rumble what do we do about a guy like daryl sutter who's a million years old has seen everything in his life he's got to be one of the favorites just because of how how long he's been around well and okay the problem with daryl sutter is you got to give him a paul hayman you know or a paul
Starting point is 00:09:29 bearer in his case because he's a lot more like The Undertaker. Let's hope he brings more energy in game 500 than he did in game 499. We're going to get to that clip actually a little bit later on in the show because it is fabulous. All I want in the world is
Starting point is 00:09:45 Daryl Sutter to just recite Stephen Wright bits. I spilled spot remover on my dog. Now he's gone. That's all I want. Can I do one? I got one. I took a job at the fire hydrant factory
Starting point is 00:10:01 parking was terrible that's good I like that I like that awesome that's all I've ever wanted I don't remember if this is Mitch Hedberg or Steven Wright but no matter what room you're in it's always room temperature
Starting point is 00:10:21 wow now that i think about it oh man jesse i'm just sending something over because i forgot to send some audio clips to you but this is the thing i actually wanted to leave the show off with so when you get it can you play it for us on the uh on the thing and steve will know exactly what i'm talking about as soon as it starts playing um what about john tortorella in the coaches royal rumble oh the ultimate warrior yeah he's gonna be he's gonna be like yeah you know why don't the players listen to van halen in the dressing room instead of this hip-hop he just starts attacking everyone who's on his side sorry old habits die hard he's punching everyone who works for him are you ready for the audio i'm ready all right which audio is this
Starting point is 00:11:16 he gets tripped by zaka obvious trip and because it's on a power play put the whistles away i mean if refereeing is under scrutiny look at the last 20 seconds of this period man you can see david grachy has exact emotions yeah gosh it's got a great opportunity that's a trip by zaka uncalled i mean there was a situation where first i stick now that is jack edwards of boston bruins uh local games fame i believe he works for nbc and you know one thing i'll give to jack edwards sorry or it's nothing sorry but one thing i'll give to jack edwards always is that he is the ultimate homer and if you're going to do local games you should be a homer in my mind that's the perfect world in toronto we unfortunately do not get that anymore
Starting point is 00:12:12 except for on the radio our board not on the uh on in different sports like in the raptors we got jack strong who is the biggest homer in raptors history just awesome that's how many fouls the raptors should have had like go their way according to jack edwards every game it's at least 30 yes 100 well but what i'm talking about i'm talking about hockey obviously but the the you know joe bowen obviously is a is a homer but they've only got him on radio they had him on television it would be perfect and they used to and then i think uh you know the problem with i find local toronto broadcasting teams is that they're a bit self-loathing because they were like well i don't want to come across as a fan of the leaps even though i grew
Starting point is 00:12:53 up as a fan and i wear jerseys and now my entire family's fan for generally kids yeah jack edwards is unabashed i love that i love that kind of stuff and by the way it was a missed trip but it is very funny as a leaf fan watching that clip because that's exactly what it was like to play the bruins two years in a row and so like everything about that clip i'm like i know how that feels now bruins fans know a little bit what it's like to be a leaf fan playing a bruins hockey team didn't feel good did it jack didn't feel good no he's let's manage the game guys so that game was just a master class and it's a great introduction to jack edwards because there was there was a no goal call on goalie interference it was very goalie interference in my opinion but boy did
Starting point is 00:13:41 he ever nail the trip the reason that trip wasn't called is the devils were already down a man that's the reason that's the reason and there's makeup calls and there's that that's a game management call but like what i don't know don't trip guys like this this is the conversation and they had a similar one on 31 thoughts like well do you want to spend the whole game on the power play no that guys i don't think that's what most people are asking for it's not what most people are asking for just don't make it up don't make it up like seeing a trip in front of your face and not calling it is making it up yeah and they and and by the way they were right they're absolutely right zaka did trip creche there and it was abundantly clear and it's unmissable because
Starting point is 00:14:32 creche had the puck so it's impossible that they would have missed that and they just didn't call it and like i said on the last show it's like i understand what everybody was saying this weekend there's a lot of people going well you know you don't want the reps have a really hard job and they want to they don't want to insert themselves in the game too much and blah blah blah and you're like okay yeah i get that but how about the fact that it is mathematically almost impossible that almost every game finishes either with tied penalties or just a one penalty differential between teams it is possible that one team gets seven and another team gets zero no just call it no you can call it that's not how hockey works adam and weirdly enough to that point jesse
Starting point is 00:15:12 it's strange but when people are aware of what the rules are and the rules are the same every time people are able to follow the rules no the rules are i take one you take one that is not the way it should be so actually i got i got a little bit of stats here um on the on the penalty calls being close so this is from will scouch uh he tweeted here's the thing i threw together i'm not sure shows anything meaningful minor penalty differentials by games since the 2012-13 season so the lockout Jordan season 61 percent of 9,037 games have had a differential of zero or one just 15 percent of games are more than three so it it does wasn't crazy last show no and he also asked is it possible that over 60 percent of nhl games have basically an equal
Starting point is 00:16:14 number of actual infractions that warrant a penalty no maybe but that's why you do a formal review and at least put more of a microscope on public accountability for referees fun note december 22nd 2015 the only game played since 2012 13 with a penalty differential of eight the Canucks took 11 minor penalties and drew just three neat was that when Burroughs was playing for them I that was you know what let me look let me look December was that's when they had the thing against Burroughs and who reffed that game I would I'm about to I'm about to find out you get you guys to take the wheel here yeah this this is interesting because uh uh I mean that is so unbelievably rare that it would be kind of fun to see it better have been Tim Peel
Starting point is 00:17:02 no was there was it was it was it oj that had the the problem with him though remember the oj story you told last would you believe me if i told you burrows did not get a single one of the penalties wow all right but it was wow and who reffed the game could we find out uh let me try to find out that i don't know if hockey reference has that well they should no i don't see that they if you could pull up the NHL like the box score from the NHL.com it'll have it on there okay you guys take the wheel
Starting point is 00:17:35 what you want me to talk and look it up at the same time well you are you were telling me what to get I thought so Jesse there was this one time I was headed to the zoo and today we're gonna have zoo corner because are we i can't wait the people are asking for it i think it's great this is a show of the people no frederick lecouier and dean morton were the referees tim nowak and steve miller the linesman there you go uh head coach willie
Starting point is 00:18:15 Desjardins. Who remembers that? Everyone remember that? Willie Desjardins. Where is he going to finish in the Royal Rumble? He's not playing. He's not coaching anymore, is he? Yeah, but who knows? He could be on the aftermatch show, like the talk show.
Starting point is 00:18:32 He's like the former wrestler who's still sort of young. Remember when he went to LA and was like, any value that we were going to get from this Ilya Kovalchuk contract is now going in the toilet. he was there for like an hour
Starting point is 00:18:46 like he coached them for like a hot minute and then was gone and then he was good with the Canadians the second he got traded it's weird I just remember one of our conversations was if I'm Ilya Kovalchuk I need you to explain why I should listen to you and the answer we came up with is
Starting point is 00:19:05 I shouldn't and so neither lasted very long did they yeah that's crazy now Saturday night versus the Oilers the Leafs obviously go to overtime with the Oilers who were threatening for first place um I you know obviously it was a really kind of back and forth hard fought fun game but my question to you is um what were your thoughts on Alex Galchenyuk well are we gonna are we gonna wear some crowns oh I guess we gotta wear some crowns I forgot okay Steve say hold that damn hold that damn thought
Starting point is 00:19:35 we're getting into who wore the crown you better hold it don't you let it go don't you let it go don't you dare you hold jesse who's who's doing the crown uh today i got a message uh in my dms a couple weeks ago it said hey jesse can i sponsor the next who wore the crown in honor of women's month so uh last month so backed up we are with these uh i'm a pens fan but i appreciate the content you guys put out also i'm not sure i would have checked out the nwhl if you guys didn't talk about it on your show so thank you that it's back we should say it's back it is back oh it's not back anymore it's over now boston one it's not back anymore it's over yeah it's over that's from fiona listen i don't like the boston one again okay they just keep winning shit it's driving
Starting point is 00:20:24 me crazy fiona thank you for sponsoring who wore the crown today brought to you by fiona anytime you want to bring up pain and suffering bring up boston why not why not have everybody lose to boston everything all the time fiona we love you thank you so much for sponsoring steve you're wearing the crown right now who do you give it to well i'd like to echo what you said and give an honorary crown to the boston pride i mean goodness what a star of sports town uh i just want to congratulate the city of boston on finally winning something congratulations but legitimately the nwhl for getting through their season that was on and then paused and then on and then paused and then on again and now done um herculean effort to just get to the end of the damn thing
Starting point is 00:21:12 and actually hand out the isabel cup that's incredible so there's a few candidates for who should wear the crown i am that wasn't her crown no i said honorary crown off the top jesse Steve is now giving two crowns, Jesse I can give as many as I fucking want It's true There's so many candidates I mean, William Nylander never seems to get any love Yeah
Starting point is 00:21:39 You know, John Tavares I mean, he doesn't get nearly as much love as Austin Matthews on the crown segment, am I right, folks? I am gonna give it to, because I'm being pressured by Omar White of the Dangle Navy uh i'm gonna give it to alex galchenyuk because he threatened physical harm on me if i didn't
Starting point is 00:21:58 give it to him but you know what it's not a stretch at all there omar it's not a stretch at all uh an absolute spark plug a guy with the effort level that i could have never predicted during that segment where i completely shit on his entire career uh alex galchenyuk has been far more than i would have ever expected for the leafs all the skill that was ever advertised appears to be back the effort the feistiness the physicality even uh is right there he's gonna bag one it's just a matter of time he almost had one in this one my crown goes to chucky or galley or gelch jesse would you like to go next or would you like me to go next what would you like to do i can definitely go next go ahead because mine uh mine ties in with steve's now
Starting point is 00:22:49 you see i was going to give my crown to alex delchenyuk but um it's not gonna it's not gonna move very far from mr alex because i wanted to give it to a budding romance a budding bromance that's uh beginning on the leafs between alex delchenyuk and william nylander so christine shilton of uh the tsn yes i added the to the the the tsn tweeted out william neilander said that when alex galchenyuk was with the marlies they bumped into each other while out for a walk we were talking for an hour i never really met the guy but he's very nice he wants to be here and works really hard out there and then she followed up by saying galchenyuk said he was just out getting some fresh air when he bumped into William Nylander.
Starting point is 00:23:40 I see a guy wearing a pink hat, so I knew right away it was Willie. He saw me wearing green shoes, so he knew it was me too. And to follow up on that, after they played together on, I believe this was after Saturday's game, Luke Fox Jukebox of a lesser network, The Sportsnet, tweeted out, in their 30 minutes on ice together, the Maple Leafs' new Galchenyuk-Taveras-Nylander line has generated 83% of expected goals,
Starting point is 00:24:10 90% of high danger chances, and one comeback win over the Oilers. So in what, like three games, five days, Galchenyuk and Nylander producing, going out on walks, wearing pink hats. It's a match made in heaven, and I love it. So my crown goes to them too. And I'm taking my crown back from Galchenyuk
Starting point is 00:24:32 because Steve already went to his. So my crown goes to William Nylander. Thank you very much. My crown is going to an unsung hero on this segment. One, Austin Matthews. Austin Matthews, who gets like the least amount of crowns, which is outrageous. And we need to start honoring this man more
Starting point is 00:24:49 because I don't think even our parents' generation understand the kind of talent that we're watching every time Austin Matthews steps on the ice. This guy is the best Toronto Maple Leaf there has been since 1967 and probably before. That's right. I include Dave Keon in that. Sorry, guys.
Starting point is 00:25:03 austin matthews is incredible and when he finishes up his career with the leafs whenever that is we're all gonna know it he's already almost in the top 10 for goals already for a franchise that's 103 years old that's a little sad um but we have a disturbing lack of star power in our history now i do want to talk about saturday's game specifically because there are some times where they talk about an hockey where literally you're lucky or you're good or you're both and austin had multiple opportunities to help the leafs get ahead early help the leafs tie it up help the leafs get the go-ahead goal before the end of regulation none of them went in post post miss net whatever it is this guy had six scoring chances i believe in the three period frame austin
Starting point is 00:25:49 matthews is scoring on one of those that there's no way that you shut him out six different times that way but they did the Oilers did the post did and then somehow in overtime he tries to we think pass the puck or shoot it double deflection in the net and that's when a goal scorer and it sounds ridiculous I don't I don't think that a guy like and no offense to Zach Hyman here I don't think Zach Hyman scores that goal I don't think former Leaf Travis Boyd scores that goal I think that's only a goal that goal scorers score and it's not because it took any sort of talent it really didn't it went off a skate and went off another skate it's just that when you get the kind of opportunities austin matthews gets all the time you sometimes see something weird bounce in and
Starting point is 00:26:35 that was a weird goal scorers goal that you only see mega goal scorers get that's an ovechkin goal pavel burry would score a goal like that you know what i mean you see like weird like just weird ass bounces you're like how the he already gets all these goals how did he get that one too it's because he is constantly in a position to score austin matthews you get my crown and fiona thank you so much for uh uh for sponsoring who wore the crown um uh next time that you want to uh sponsor the crown segment you can too by making a donation to your local charity and sending us proof why not pork wapa it's not even someone asked me to say oh how many what's the um uh what's the lineup like now jesse we're like backed up for oh yeah i think we're into may also
Starting point is 00:27:21 i realized it's still march so we are still in women's month for two more days i just realized that i thought it was april um but yes we are through april i think we're doing first week of may right now okay we're like the next ones that will come in i'll go there pretty crazy also adam can i give a little bit of trivia to uh follow up on your austin matthews point please do so austin matthews now is the is tied for the all-time record for home ot goals for the leafs is now he's tied in first do you know who he's tied with two other toronto maple leafs i do know one of the names one of them and i think i know the other okay let's hear it yeah home ot winners i think i'm pretty sure sundine's one yeah matt's was like i think he led like doesn't he have like
Starting point is 00:28:11 an nhl record in overtime goals he was like tied or something like that and he never sure i think he played in the four on four era briefly but he never played three on three you guys are correct matt sundin also has five home ot goal winners so who is the other leaf steve thomas thomas caberly adam wilde steve thomas oh hey there you go he had a he had a weird career that guy was very very good and sort of unsung until later on when he came back from New Jersey to play for Toronto. You know what I mean? He was a good player. He just kept freaking scoring.
Starting point is 00:28:47 They were all great goals, important goals. Fought some little shit named Darcy Tucker once. My favorite. No one remembers Steve Thomas, though, in the way that we remember the Domi and Sundin and Tucker. I agree. I
Starting point is 00:29:02 think another guy that doesn't get any credit that should is Dimitri Yuskevich. Nobody remembers talked about Dimitri Yuskevich, but he was the best defenseman they had for a long, long time. Steve Thomas is interesting. He was obviously at the Easter Seals tournament that Steve and Eric Lindros and all those guys put on. And talking to him about hockey was so interesting because he said, he told me that, and I hope I'm not getting this story wrong, but he told me that he was petrified to go to the AHL. And not really petrified, but it was sort of like a groan because
Starting point is 00:29:33 if you were a young guy that came down from the nhl to the ahl you would be targeted in the 80s as in they would try to just punch your face in because they knew that uh ownership and management were looking at you so how do you get someone's attention go after the guy that is the is the is the star young player and so once he got to the nhl level he's like i'm gonna fucking stay here because I'm terrified to go back. And he did. He did an amazing job. He played really well with the Leafs
Starting point is 00:30:05 when like the Russ Cortnall, Vinny Dampoose, Rick Vive years that no one remembers. For some reason, it's if you talk to anybody who is a Leaf fan about the late 80s, the only person they know of is Wendell Clark.
Starting point is 00:30:17 But there were some good young players on that team. And I would argue that the Leafs made a huge mistake. And I remember I trolled Steve once years ago, Jesse, before you were on the show. And I said, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:28 the Leafs should have kept Grant Fury instead of Felix Potvin. I was on the show for that. Oh, you were on the show for that? Yeah, that was really early on. And I remember Jeff Fayette wrote a whole article about who did better in the 90s. And it was actually Potvin that did better.
Starting point is 00:30:42 But I do think, you know, look back. They traded Vinnie D'Amfus to Edmonton for Grant Fuhrer. And if you keep Vinnie D'Amfus and you know that, say, they'd known Felix Potvin was going to emerge into the rubber eater that he became, you'd have Gilmore eventually Sundin and Vinny D'Amfus down the middle and Vinny D'Amfus went on to play in Montreal scored like 100 points a season like it was no joke he was a good player super underrated career super underrated super underrated I remember him and Saku Koivu giving
Starting point is 00:31:13 the Leafs all sorts of hell like in the late 90s it was crazy um to your point about Steve Thomas he definitely played like a guy who wanted nothing to do with the AHL um he in his first ahl season 90 points including 42 goals in 64 games that's crazy for the ahl it's crazy called up to the nhl one goal one assist for two points in 18 games so he has 19 games in the ahl the next year 18 goals and 32 points in in the nhl he's a 20 goal scorer in just 65 games and had 57 points and never played a single ahl game after that all the way from it was either 85 or 86 until his career ended in 2004 yeah great my favorite my favorite line growing up uh probably until probably until roberts got to the leafs was uh uh steve thomas madsen dean freddie modine
Starting point is 00:32:10 that was my favorite shot they were incredible and if the leafs had hung on to freddie modine man did mcgillney ever play on that line uh well i loved mcgillney too i don't remember he was really good with the leafs i don't know i don't remember to be honest why didn't they win a cup i know should have i know so okay on a saturday night so i want you imagine this okay you're a you're an nhl player you've scored 30 goals at the nhl level you've had big projects you've been traded you've been you know everything has happened to you but you were a third overall pick at one point and a gm calls you and says listen uh you've been through waivers this year you're not playing much we're going to send you down to the american hockey league you've never
Starting point is 00:32:52 played there in your life and you're going to go play in the american hockey league and you're going to go find your game and whenever we think you're ready person in your late 20s early 30s whenever we think you're ready then we'll bring you up and you may have a shot at playing uh some some real bona fide minutes for a guy that's struggling like alexander galchenyuk was it It's sort of interesting to see that he would say yes to an assignment like that, because I don't think every player would, but he went down, he played with the Marlies. He seems to have found his game and everything that you want to see from Alex Galchenyuk all the way throughout his career seems to be happening. Maybe not on the level that we
Starting point is 00:33:34 thought for a third overall pick, but the guy doesn't look out of place on a second line in the NHL. No. And I think it's because he's dialed. I think the Leafs and the NHL really have alex galchenyuk's full attention uh i'm getting one million dollars 1.1 i think he signed for on the sends despite being a former 30 goal scorer oh i'm on the sends fourth line oh i'm on waivers oh oh i'm a i'm a cap dump in a trade to the canes like they're not even going to use me oh then all of a sudden the leafs come along and they trade for you you're not a dump they're obviously trading for you to use you and if you're alex galchenyuk i don't think you have a choice but to trust the leafs organization immediately okay so what you want me to do is go to the
Starting point is 00:34:34 minors for like two weeks i could stomach it i could stomach it i'm either about to find out I'm washed or I still got it he found out he still got it then he got called up to the Leafs all right I'm gonna be a a plugger I'm gonna figure it out I'll be on the fourth line I still get to play with Jason Spezza that's pretty cool what I went I'm a Tavares and Willie okay like he you can't tell me the Leafs aren't getting the absolute most out of Alex Galchenyuk if he's not awake right now if any player being given the opportunity that he's getting right now is not paying attention they don't belong in the league and what we're finding out is Alex Galchenyuk belongs in the NHL I think he proved us wrong proved me wrong definitely uh and I think
Starting point is 00:35:23 he proved uh I think he's proven it to himself right now like I don't know what anyone's going through I don't know how you go from 30 goal scorer to whatever Alex Galchenyuk was a month ago but this guy's a leaf now and he's got a golden opportunity they he got demoted from that golden opportunity line and and sheldon keith said no don't look at it as a demotion but well call it whatever you want and then when the leafs needed a goal he went right back to it and galchenyuk rewarded him and these aren't just like little stupid secondary assists i think the second assist was a secondary one but like it doesn't happen without him some secondary assists are valuable by the way yeah like we gotta I know that there's sometimes
Starting point is 00:36:10 where it's like well that's a bit iffy but but there are plenty of secondary assists that are valuable I featured one in hat picks this week it was Joe Pavelski between his legs at his own blue line but it was the only reason the puck went in right the between the legs no look past to Tavares it's it's not just having the skill to do it it's the reaction time that puck accidentally bouncing off I think it was uh Chris Russell to to process that information so quickly oh I'm about to get the puck I'll I'll put it between my legs to the captain who I know is behind me this guy man he could be a real real fine for the leafs kudos to them because he wasn't on my list so here's my question so the the the and this is a little bit early but i would still like to talk
Starting point is 00:37:04 about this so the leafs are apparently if nashville decides to sell which by the way they're winning some games now so now they think they're good again um they're not but they think they are um they still have a shot at the playoffs which is sure but they're not good come on they should sell on grandlin they gotta they gotta win your deal with the guy they should sell on grandlin uh if nashville is not if nashville's serious if they're serious about being a good team going for a great team going forward they need to recoup assets and you know what they can go and uh they can go and go into the playoffs and that sort of thing but i don't think maybe i'm wrong maybe in july you're laughing at me because nashville's won the stanley cup but i don't see a stanley
Starting point is 00:37:42 cup winning team there i think you sell for assets this year regardless of that um if grandlin's not available if you know palmieri apparently may not be available i guess new jersey's also got a shot at the playoffs uh everybody's got a shot at the playoffs uh new jersey's a little bit i'm joking but apparently they're still not maybe making him available which is okay fine um and then you've got taylor hall and buffalo who leaf fans seem to want but i don't know that the leafs are necessarily in on um you know they're looking for a first round pick for him they're probably not going to get it according to Elliot Friedman, at least not at this point. Do the Leafs have to if Gauch continues to play like this? And that is a major, major, major point here. Trade deadline's not for
Starting point is 00:38:25 a couple of weeks. It's on my birthday, which is kind of cool this year. So it's on, it's April 13th trade deadline. How much do you need to see out of Gauch? And for how long before you say, you know what? We may not need that top six forward. Maybe we need another depth forward. Maybe we need another Travis Boyd that we can pick up who's making $700,000 or whatever. Maybe we call the Canucks and offer them a conditional seventh to get Boyd back, whatever it is you want. But do they need a top six forward
Starting point is 00:38:53 if Alex Galchenyuk can sustain this type of play? I still kind of think they do. I think they're finding out once and for all what they got. Kerfoot, they're sort of burying in the lineup. I look at the lineup that they have, and I think they're trying to figure out what life without Alex Kerfoot is going to look like. You think they're going to trade him?
Starting point is 00:39:23 I think it's a possibility, but I really like that player. That contract's no fun, but I feel like that's maybe an off-season move. You don't move him unless you're getting something real. Right. You know what I mean? um Galchenyuk would definitely solve an issue on that second line there with Tavares and Nylander but I suppose you could put him with Marner and Matthews as well what I'm not loving is
Starting point is 00:39:54 two months of playoff hockey with a 41 year old Joe Thornton on your top line and equal parts playing wayne simmons on his off side like they're trying this neat thing his broken body too yeah don't forget that yeah i mean literally in some spots yeah right i'm we know kerfa can do that assignment we know he can do that um he can play with tavaris and willie no problem we haven't seen as much of them with matthews and marner but it's an intriguing thought it's just they don't of a guy who in their current state and age uh is a permanent top six player and a guy you don't have to shelter like they shelter joe thornton right and he's great he's the way they use him he's great they've put him in different spots in the lineup and he's been more than happy to do it
Starting point is 00:40:52 and he said that today i would like to see another guy but galchenyuk makes it so it's not a dire uh acquisition like this is the problem i have like people keep going oh come on leafs make a trade make a trade and i know it's your go for it year but if the trade involves taking someone off the active roster it better be a real good one because the roster as it's currently built is the best one in canada you got to be able to justify taking one off maybe winnipeg says hello winnipeg says hello but they don't say first place at the moment no sure they can say hello all they want also i think they're wave from a second if we're talking about non-goalies here are we talking about non-goalie players here
Starting point is 00:41:37 because because talk about what buoys a lot of what's when it went and that's okay but connor hellebuck is yeah it's part of the team so yeah okay all right i'm just throwing that out there no you're absolutely right like hyman not like the guy is we still have zach hyman it feels like we forget that it can be hyman matthews marner anytime we want it's just that they need him on the third line yeah but i wish they did it you know why can't we see that's why i think you got it that's why i went back to eric stall is you can't pierre engvall is not is not the guy it ain't pierre guys it might be next year but it ain't this year that guy was caught uh i think it was he was watching the play on the third goal pierre engvall has moments where
Starting point is 00:42:21 you go, oh, that's what Pierre Engvall can be. And we've said that on this show a couple of times already this year, but then you have most moments where you're like, oh, that's what he is right now. That's his average. That's his mean. It's not, Pierre Engvall is not it. He's not it. So they got to figure out something there. And I wonder, that's why I asked the question specifically about a top six forward, because if you can avoid spending assets on that, could you not find a powerhouse third center i still think the issue is on the wing there on the left wing they have enough guys who can play center right like we keep forgetting kerfoot's an option there up the middle i don't know if he's the best option yeah i don't know if you're gonna get
Starting point is 00:43:09 a complete a team without weaknesses right you know what i mean like even even tampa had to like okay i guess we'll use luke shen for like an extended period of time you're gonna get injuries here's another issue so you know friedman and other insiders have talked about uh teams on the playoff bubble and their lack of willingness to completely blow it up three wins you can make that up in a week right so if you're six points three wins out of the playoffs you don't want to blow it up because you're a hot week from being in there what teams are seven or more points out of the playoffs right now very few very very few in the central division you have one it's detroit in the mass mutual east division you have two the devils and the sabers oh my own the devils are
Starting point is 00:44:14 9 points out of a playoff spot with 30 points the Sabres have 16 oh my god anyway in the Honda West you have two teams the Sharks
Starting point is 00:44:33 and the Ducks the Kings are starting to slip and in the Scotia North you have one Ottawa but slim pickings how many teams did i say six there are six teams who are more than six points out of the playoffs i don't know about this buyer's market everyone's talking about guys all right i think in the next couple weeks i also think you're completely you're completely
Starting point is 00:45:02 um ignoring the fact that there's probably 50 or more percent of the nhl owners are like we need to shed salary now there is that there is that that is that's part of the buyer's market is that there's a lot of teams are like i actually have to lose money now but one way to recoup is to make the playoffs and do well that's like how well especially if come uh june when the playoffs start in nhl arenas in the u.s are at 50 capacity that's not a bad way to make some money back that's true you know because they're getting there and uh i would looking at the left side of the Leafs like it's Hyman Thornton Simmons
Starting point is 00:45:40 Mikheyev Kerfoot and whatever kind of guys you want to throw in there I would rather pick up a defenseman and use that core on your for your forwards and go after that you know if you're going to trade away assets I'd rather defenseman at this point
Starting point is 00:45:56 I agree you know who they need to evaluate like they have to get this guy in the NHL and playing games to have a definitive answer there before they go out and do anything they need to see i think three games out of nick robertson you gotta know what you have before the trade deadline yeah you need to know what you have there and i'm looking now the trade deadline is april 12th it's march 29th i don't think they're gonna do it no um i also think isn't he still hurt
Starting point is 00:46:23 he's on the taxi squad i think he's but that was because he was supposed to get access to the medical staff oh i thought he i thought he was back getting games with the marley's no i think they've got him up on the taxi squad i'm pretty sure all right well then you're not going to get that option then yeah i the further down the lineup you keep zach hyman the better but we already know thornton and simmons aren't the answer simmons might be the answer if he's on the right um he's not the answer on the left and we know they're thornton and simmons aren't the answer because when the leafs are down in the third period keith goes back to his comfort food which is Zach Hyman up with Matthews and Meyer.
Starting point is 00:47:04 Which makes sense, which makes sense. But if you want to roll, you want to roll three, which is what they want to do with a weird fourth line with Jason Spets is scoring it like more than half a point a game, which is crazy. He's had, by the way, if he scores two more goals, it'll be his most amount of goals scored in a single season since 1617. Oh, he's completely turned back the clock. It's crazy.
Starting point is 00:47:28 He's got eight. the max he had uh in the last four years is nine which is last year when he only played 58 games uh if he if he goes just we just need two more goals from jason spezza and it will get up to the 16 17 total but he had 15 back then so you know much bigger role on that dallas team too it's wild to me and he did have that one incredible playoff with dallas he did those those uh that's why you invest man you invest in those like once like all world players that are now older because in spurts they can turn it on like you know cory perry was like all right it's the stanley cup final i'm just absolutely leaving it all out on the ice yes he can barely even make
Starting point is 00:48:18 the habs right now but in that stanley cup final he was a monster because they just leave it all out there i want to see what the old guys do in the playoffs man i do but i still think ah i still think they need help okay and uh and with uh with nashville potentially not making a trade um matias at home would then come off the board which would be a huge loss to a lot of teams that really want to grab a defenseman beforehand now uh the leafs are definitely not looking for a goalie at least that what uh elliot friedman's been told he mentioned on the broadcast on saturday night that unless they absolutely have to uh they're in a tight cap situation so they can't really do can't make anderson they can't sorry get another goalie in anderson will likely
Starting point is 00:49:02 be back for the playoffs but it's looking like it's going to be an extended time out for now and you know i mean with the leafs battling for that top thing in the division obviously jack campbell's looking okay been a bit up and down over the last three games but pretty good um you know it seems like the Leafs can survive this I'm wondering what kind of Freddie comes back once and I don't think it'll be like this injury reserve thing is seven to ten days I it doesn't sound to me anyway that that will be the end of the injured reserve Freddie like I think he's going to be gone for a bit um can the Leafs survive on Campbell and Hutchinson I want to see if Eva lining gets in you think you will well what what I didn't see an answer on today and
Starting point is 00:49:47 Maybe you guys can give it to me. So we know Hutch is starting this game against the Oilers, who he shut out last time. I kept forgetting about that. I'm like, oh, no, we're doomed. Oh, he did what? I didn't see if Campbell was backing up. Is he backing up?
Starting point is 00:50:06 I think he probably is. I haven't seen anything come across the wire. Is that something the Leafs have kind of changed their minds on? Like, hey, if we want to get a goalie rest, why are we having him put all his equipment on and warm up and everything and sit on the bench for a couple hours when he could be you know working with our staff and actually getting better yeah yeah or at home sleeping or at home yeah like doing doing anything but just sitting there so they haven't announced the backup goalie yet it says uh keith spoke he said campbell it
Starting point is 00:50:39 is not 100%. While he's been playing, it's been taking a toll on him. Then it says, if Campbell can't back up, he skated this morning, which is huge. The only other healthy goalie on the scene is Vevalainen, who is
Starting point is 00:50:55 playing today. The Marlies are playing right now, FYI. He is in the net, so we will see how that goes. Interesting. I assume Campbell will have to back up, no matter what because uh the marlies are in action interest uh what okay i mean yeah it's good to
Starting point is 00:51:18 obviously they'll want to get him games uh on account of he's been quarantining for two weeks before it was fun they're playing the stockton heat right now and he has allowed one goal trade him back oh wait no it's dude it's not even him oh he's not in he's not he's not a goal no it's joseph wool is he the backup for wool no it's ian scott okay what the hell is going on with vevalainen so maybe he's gonna be back up tonight that's good maybe he won't go that's interesting i like that they're oh and uh garrett sparks is backing up archum zagadoulan wait where's garrett sparks playing the stockton heat i forgot he signed like a pto with the flames i don't know if they called him up or anything and the good news uh joseph wool by the way had
Starting point is 00:52:11 an 880 save percentage in 32 games last year tough introduction to professional hockey in five games this year he's in 904 which is obviously much better yeah yeah byron phrase had a shot on goal byron phrase is an unbelievable ahl player and you will put respect on his name how dare you i just he's real good ahl guy he got called up recently and i was like look at you i forgot all about you i we saw him too many times that at rico yeah and then too many times that the acc when it was the acc way too many times no we didn't see him enough at rico yeah that was the problem at least we're so thin no good he had us thinking well you know what byron phrase could be a good fourth line center we actually probably said that and just he's uh
Starting point is 00:53:00 He's actually the captain right now on the Stockton Heat. Good for him. That's good. He deserves it. That's great. We're not making fun. That's pretty freaking good, man. You know what I didn't expect to come up today?
Starting point is 00:53:13 Byron Fraze. There you go. Did not expect that at all. And now we have a mystery of who the hell is Vevelainen and where is he right now? The Sabres have some stuff that we should probably cover. obviously uh joe urdan did a great job last time on just talking about just the mess that buffalo is right now uh on the taylor hall thing people asked him hey would you be willing to wave your no trade clause he openly said yeah for sure um six players were traded at the 2020 deadline in
Starting point is 00:53:47 return for packages that included a first rounder steve can you name them that included a first round sorry say one more time six players were traded at the 2020 deadline which is right before covid last year yeah or return packages that included a first round pick meaning the teams received a first rounder plus or just a first rounder who do you think okay uh barkley gaudreau was a weird one i don't get this that'll this will be an all-time steve moment yeah okay barkley gaudreau was um blake coleman another did they trade two first blake coleman okay so i've got two brady shea that's correct jesus oh this is scary i want i want you to go outside
Starting point is 00:54:44 man shut up i worked the trade no this is unbelievable come on oh this is so hard yeah brady shay went from the rangers to the hurricanes defenseman you know this is terrible audio so i got i'm trying to film it i'm done at three i also want to say i want to say that not all of these happen on the trade deadline day so that's not fair to steve but i'm just saying it was around the deadline okay so what's what's my when's the
Starting point is 00:55:30 cutoff like like mid-feb early early mid-feb you know like around deadline you know that there's the early trades that sort of thing we're just talking about last year around the deadline that were clearly going to be deadline moves that happened early sometimes. Didn't Vegas get someone? No. Did the Blues get someone?
Starting point is 00:55:54 No. I don't know. Are we going to get the 10-hour deadline shows again? Are we? I assume, but it's going to be over Zoom, right? Hey, welcome to Trade Deadline Coverage 2021 because what else are you doing? Hi, I'm Jeff
Starting point is 00:56:09 Merrick. um ah i'm done i'm done okay well that was pretty good yeah um these are going to be a little unfair this is according to luke fox our buddy at sports net uh jason zucker for oh alex galchenyuk and a first oh wow how funny is that um you also had jean gabriel pageau oh yeah oh man andre it's cash right kasha kasha yeah under kasha also moved for first now all of those list of six what crazy weird weird first round pick moves right like barclay grugio was the one that i was like what would any of those guys if they are available this trade deadline are you trading them for a first round pick maybe pick maybe peugeot depending upon how bad you need one i'd argue it
Starting point is 00:56:59 makes more sense to trade a first round pick for any of those guys this year on account of the first round pick is worthless when you look at what blake coleman brought to the tampa bay lightning obviously good draw as well but like blake coleman was a game breaker for them from time to time that was that was a worthwhile move i like um i i really like the i think john gabriel pichot which is just i'm a big fan i think he's great good two-way guy perfect second third centerman um but it's interesting about that and the reason i bring it up is taylor hall because taylor hall is obviously an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year which means that His trade deadline value would be less.
Starting point is 00:57:37 Guys that have a year or two left after this trade deadline, according to the way the NHL works, they have more value, right? So your chances of getting a first round pick for somebody are higher. Taylor Hall doesn't have that. All of the players I just named, except for Peugeot, had term left on their contracts. You were getting cost certainty. yes and so when we look at buffalo i feel bad for them but the fact that he only signed for
Starting point is 00:58:08 one year there is going to really hurt them man i saw that's all they had available to them probably but forget forget not getting good return for taylor hall like forget not getting a first what should give sabers fans pause is i saw an article i think it was on the leafstation.com should the least trade for victor olufsen and i went what this guy he's got this year and next year left he makes barely over three million he's restricted free agent at the end of it he's one of two guys on the sabers who's actually scoring why would they get rid of him and he's one of their only valuable chips is the answer who else do you want like this is the other thing there are six teams that are uh more than six points out of a playoff spot right now but
Starting point is 00:58:57 there are five sellers i don't want anything the sabers have i don't want outside of taylor hall who do you want like the only the only guy i saw where i was like the fact his name is even being brought up fold fold if you can't use rasmus delene fold so when my god i don't know who's reporting that because i cj and elliot and it was talked about on 31 thoughts was on the podcast because he's been the second worst saber is minus 20 last i checked the worst saber is rasmus dalina minus 30 he's dash he's like averaging dash one a game yeah but they they had the probably not only they had one of the worst lineups they had not a great coach what's this guy but he's also he also hasn't looked good on the ice like he's been walked
Starting point is 00:59:53 a couple big times and made some couple highlight reels just for how not good he's been. He has no support. And there's been no improvement in his game as well. You expect guys who are that young to take a step each year and Darlene hasn't been that player. But how do you take a step?
Starting point is 01:00:09 Jack Eichel has taken a step despite the odds. Right? The odds were Jack Eichel was not going to be great because look at the development system around him. It's terrible. and then and then who's darling gonna learn from rasmus off the boards ristolainen like it's it's just it's it's who who is there to play with and i'm looking at their d uh fence uh please clip
Starting point is 01:00:35 that i'm looking at their defense ristolainen's got one more year that's it miller's got one more year that's it montour's done after this year he's a guy i think i'd be interested in dalene's an rfa yoki hour use an rfa uh jacob bryson has one year left on his entry level or yeah it's his elc and matt erwin who you didn't know was a saber but he is uh is done after this year what i feel like we had this conversation last year a year ago after this season is done who is on the sabers here's a fun question who do they protect uh against this against seattle you expose jeff skinner oh you can't he's got a no move
Starting point is 01:01:29 no move this team sucks so eichel skinner you can't protect doleen because he can't be exposed can you can you decline spots like can they only use like three other spots maybe what you want yeah like think about okay so if you're the leafs maybe you call buffalo and you go listen we know we're gonna lose justin hall or travis dermot so can we at least trade you one of them so that we can get some value back in the offseason i'm not talking about before the trade deadline but if you're if you're kevin adams and you're and you have any sort of intel we'll see what kevin adams can do. Like forget that he's a rookie and has no experience and nobody else in the organization has any experience. Sometimes that matters. Most of the time it does. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes
Starting point is 01:02:14 you get, you get this crazy GM who comes out of nowhere and blows people away. I tend to err on the side of, I'm a little concerned about the lack of experience there. But if Kevin Adams really wants to utilize this opportunity, I would be calling every team that is going to lose a valuable player and saying we will take him we will fire our assets back at you and we will keep we'll be able to actually have a good core like if you have Rasmus Darlene and then you've got you know and you're able to pick up a couple of guys that are Travis Dermott or Justin Hall level suddenly things don't look so bad they need to be getting like Brooks like and Malay Mahalik and stuff like that like the Leafs did yeah and it's worse so I just realized they have a bunch of guys on IR like part
Starting point is 01:02:57 of the reason they're bad is obviously jack eichel's out he's the only guy on ir though out of five uh with term jake mccabe ufa william borgen rfa rasmus asplund rfa tobias reader ufa both goalies lenis allmark and carter hutton lukinen in the minors does not look ready what's the plan like what literally what's the plan going forward but it's okay they're investing in other parts of the team from lance lasowski sources tell me that the sabers let go of another scout the staff was the next thing i was going to bring up perfect there you go the uh the staff now has six people working under jeremiah crow jerry fortin jason nightingale uh for context the leafs have 13 amateur scouts this this is what i'm talking about like there's
Starting point is 01:03:48 at present there is no reason to believe the sabers will get out of this like i may have to i'm sorry go ahead go ahead well i was gonna say there are guys i like dylan cousins awesome you know uh but like oh oh my god oh my god what are you supposed to do what do you you have nothing you have nothing and the things you do have you've ruined you have jack eichel that might be done lord no like how much more of this can he take and doline like by the way you may have to protect doline to throwing that out there his elc comes to an end this year you may there you go like doline uh hey rasmus um here's your contract extension i don't want to trade me what no we're giving you a bunch of money i don't want to trade me
Starting point is 01:04:40 well we're not going to do that well i'm not i'm okay i'm sitting out guess what old school lindros i'm sitting out figure it out i'm not playing i'm not playing fuck you you suck like i don't know oh my god they no no that's they can't trade him they can't trade rasmus dolly you you have to sell the team well because here's the thing they put themselves at a disadvantage because they can't attract free agents they don't have any staff to scout good players so they can't draft anybody like you got guys who are doing double duty on on scouting you got a year where scouting is spotty at best because you can't see any of these players in person anyway and a lot of them haven't played
Starting point is 01:05:26 because of covid like where do you go i mean really do you throw a bunch of money at the next free agent that can't get a long-term deal like because let's be honest taylor hall didn't want to sign in buffalo that wasn't like man darren darren ferris please call up the sabers and let me play with the sabers they were the last team available they were the last we heard the story he had other deals on the table and then those fell through and this was the last one sitting there and he had to take it literally a saber by accident yeah yeah because darren ferris probably maybe overplayed his hand oh my god just oh my god like i'm trying to what was the guy's name was it derrick grant here he is derrick grant was like sort of an
Starting point is 01:06:13 afterthought and then he got sent to the ducks i believe and now look at you look at you go he's on a three-year deal paying him 1.5 million dollars a year to score seven points in 29 games for the ducks you know but like there are there are players like that though who are fringe players on probably contenders who get sent to a team like the ducks and look at me go i'm producing here in this role i have value in the nhl and they get a deal do you think fringe players want to be going to the sabers right now no because what happens okay you're you're gonna be on like the second line you're gonna be on like the second line so there's your golden opportunity but if you don't score you're out of the league you're out it's true it's true if you prove you can score
Starting point is 01:07:07 teams around the league will go you know what even the sabers the sabers might want to keep you and they'll give you a bunch of money but teams around the league will see that you scored with the sabers and they'll be like all right that's a player let's make them an offer at least and then you can leverage offers against each other etc if you go to the sabers for the final i don't know what how what's left let's say 18 games after the trade deadline whatever it is and you put up three points you're out of the league that place is radioactive i don't know what you do i don't know what you do usually these conversations are fun like we i always find myself fascinated with like the worst three
Starting point is 01:07:47 teams in the league or whatever it because we get to play be a gm armchair gm and we try to figure out how to make them good again i with the sabers it's like a blank slate i don't know what to do i don't know what to do i don't know what to do what's that that could also be fun it could also be fun but the answer the the answer that a lot of people go to that is always wrong is free agency i'm gonna go to free agency and i'm gonna spend a bunch of money okay first of all you're probably going to overpay for absolutely everybody yes you can't rely on you can't depend on getting a value signing because you have no fucking scouts so i don't know what you're supposed to do there and also nobody wants to go there the oilers are good and
Starting point is 01:08:41 they have trouble signing guys the habs are good and they have trouble signing well not so much this past offseason, but they had money because they had money because they had money. They're spending more. I think they're spending more than the Leafs this year. Habs are spending a lot of money. I don't know what the Sabres do. I don't I don't know what the golden hope is here. I think you tell teams calling about Taylor Hall to shove picks up their ass.
Starting point is 01:09:05 I want prospects. I want actual human beings because we don't have any. Yeah, people I can force to stay here in indentured servitude. I mean, like, I don't know what you do. I don't know. Arms in the air. Every year, there's a really bad team, and I go, ooh, this is fun. I don't know what to do with the Buffalo Sabres.
Starting point is 01:09:28 I don't. I don't know either. I would, I'd like to move on. Jesse, I sent you some audio. Do you mind picking it up? You want me to put it here? Yeah, if you could. That would be excellent.
Starting point is 01:09:40 I can definitely do that. Also, who's got dentures? What did you say? indentured johnny plays johnny gadrell plays 500 games tonight at the nhl level i'm just wondering you know mostly as a guy who's coached against him and now working with him what uh what have your kind of impressions been of the career he's made so far and then what are you looking to see out of him now at this point well if you're just basing on his 500th game tonight hopefully he has more energy than in his 499th game that's uh Flames coach Daryl Sutter calling out one more
Starting point is 01:10:17 time yeah yeah Adam this time just let us bask in the silence and Jesse I need you to say when the clip's done okay okay yeah basket Johnny plays Johnny Gaudreau plays 500 games tonight at the NHL level I'm just wondering you know mostly as a guy who's coached against him and now working with him what uh what have your kind of impressions been of the career he's made so far and then what are you looking to see out of him now at this point well if you're just basing on his 500th game tonight hopefully he has more energy than in his 499th game johnny place there it is that's the end man i you know there were a variety of reactions to this a lot of them were i think too defensive uh what he's right what he's right okay
Starting point is 01:11:19 listen to quote the great stephen a smith all right all right let's be nice you're not wrong but you didn't have to say it but you can choose to not be an asshole yes jesse i think that's a very important thing here he did not have to do that he didn't have to he could have been perfectly honest the question was to daryl sutter as a guy who coached against him and what that journalist i don't know who it was what what they're directly referencing is when the flames embarrassed the reigning stanley cup champion la kings and eliminated them from the playoffs because the cardiac kids the flames with johnny goudreau as a rookie the unbelievable squad so fun to watch right they sold the deadline and went on a ridiculous heater and made it
Starting point is 01:12:14 awesome awesome team so fun to watch it's a season that all Flames fans should look back on with fondness just for the excitement of it forget how it ended who cares just the excitement of it it's a layup it's it's on a tee for Daryl to be like you know I remember coaching against that kid and he brought this and he brought that and he brought that and lately you could even be hard lately he hasn't been giving us that lately we've been having difficulty finding that or johnny's been having difficulty finding that and it's my job to get him back there or i'm determined to get him back there instead like i don't maybe he was making a joke and he's just got the delivery of the joker friggin joaquin phoenix like i i don't it was horrible what's his name arthur
Starting point is 01:13:11 in the movie arthur what yeah in the uh in the new one yeah yeah arthur i think like maybe he was trying to make a joke but like you know humans like smirk right he delivered it like a calculator yeah because he meant it he meant every word johnny hasn't been giving us enough like bro it's yes you're not wrong Daryl Sutter's not wrong but like Jesse said you don't have to be an asshole do you think that stuff works like none of us the three of us haven't played in the NHL but if you're an NHL player and your coach does that to the media does that are you gonna go out there that night and be like ah my coach said this I'm gonna play a little bit harder do you get that extra half percent out of your guy by chastising him in front of the media
Starting point is 01:14:08 what do you guys think no if i can answer you want to go there yeah i mean if i can answer your your question with a little bit of a longer answer jesse i apologize in advance but rant away i don't think this is about johnny i think this is about setting the tone for the people who are still going to be here once johnny gets traded this offseason yeah he's getting dealt he's going this is johnny goudreau is not going to be a flame beyond this year flame fans flames fans i hope you've enjoyed the ride it's over and you know what you're probably a little bit relieved because you've relied on this guy in the playoffs so many times since the cardiac kids and he hasn't been very good so i don't blame daryl sutter for drawing a line in the sand this flames team
Starting point is 01:15:01 has gotten away with being less than mediocre when they have all the talent all the resources and everything available to them you know the flames went out and spent huge money 12 million dollars combined per year on tan evan markstrom and they can't even get into the playoffs like They're not even in the playoffs right now. There's no excuse for what the Calgary Flames are other than just not good enough from their top players. Johnny Goudreau, Sean Monaghan have skated on being very talented for a long, long time. It's time they were held to account. And it's time that the younger players in the organization understand that this is not how things work anymore. That's what Daryl Sutter's doing. We told you when Daryl Sutter was hired,
Starting point is 01:15:47 And again, I was a little confused at the hire, but I have since been corrected that, you know, he embraces new things and is a bit of a coursey guy. Well, not nobody's course anymore, but like a possession guy. Fair enough. But certainly what this Calgary Flames team has always lacked is mental discipline. Always. There's without question. Brian Burke said it when Brian Burke was still the president. Well, we need to do something to address the mental toughness in this room. It's what Granlund was supposed to be. It's what Tanev was supposed to be. This Calgary Flames team has a problem
Starting point is 01:16:21 that starts at the top of the depth chart. Johnny Goudreau is problem number one. Sean Monahan is problem number two. Is that unfair? Well, if you want to make the kind of money you're making and you want to kind of get the kind of minutes you're getting, it's not unfair. You are supposed to score.
Starting point is 01:16:36 You are supposed to play better than everybody else on the team and you are supposed to be a star every single night. Have you been? No. Great. OK, so as long as that's out of the way, I don't think that Daryl Sutter is being an asshole. 500 games in the NHL is no joke.
Starting point is 01:16:51 I think what Daryl Sutter is asking Johnny Goudreau is, do you want another 500? Well, I think what? No, I don't think I don't think Daryl Sutter asked questions. I think what he's telling him is you're not getting another 500. Not not in Calgary. And and and it's interesting because Johnny's response was, well, I've been playing hockey for 24, 25 years. I know when I've been playing well and when I haven't.
Starting point is 01:17:13 Can you imagine saying that to Daryl Sutter? Wow, you've been playing hockey for a quarter century. I was drafted before you were born, kid. Yeah. Into the NHL. So I think what that is is the organization resetting itself. We don't give a shit about your 500 games. What have you won?
Starting point is 01:17:33 What have you done? Nothing. And listen, Flames fans, come at me with the Leafs about Austin Matthews and all that stuff. You're right. They haven't won anything either. we we've we've criticized the leafs a couple times on the show guys yeah i i i always hate that criticism what about the leafs what about the leafs my entire career is critiquing them
Starting point is 01:17:54 the fuck what are you talking about getting angry and sad at the stupid shit that they pull every year we know the book is called this team is ruining my life and the leafs approved it i asked the toronto maple leafs for permission to wear a jersey on the cover and they said yes they knew the title before it was released they could have said no but they're like yeah we get it so come on ease off us with that shit yeah we're trying to talk about the flames as neutral parties here and the flames have not accomplished a goddamn thing so at a certain point daryl sutter's got to say i won two stanley cups with the los angeles kings yes we were embarrassed by johnny gaudreau and his merry men back in the day but i also have two rings what do you have johnny
Starting point is 01:18:39 You have 500 games and no rings. And in fact, very few beyond first round appearances. It's like, it's like if the miracle team had to play the Soviets again. Well, nine out of 10 times, we know what would happen. Yeah. All right. Well, it's time to play the other nine motherfuckers. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:19:02 Like, you know, Adam, damn it. You turned me on the whole thing. I think. You turned me on the whole thing. So here's the thing. The Flames have made the playoffs every year except for, sorry, not every year since Goudreau has been there, but there's been two years that I can see on HockeyDB where he hasn't been in the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:19:25 There was 11 games with the heart attack kids, the next, or sorry, the cardiac kids, the next year they didn't make the playoffs. Then in 16, 17, they made it, they were swept. And then in 18, 19, they made it again. They were out in five games against, I think, the Avalanche. And then last year, hey. He was good. 10 games.
Starting point is 01:19:43 He was good. Made it. Second round. It was the elimination game. I think it was this past year where he had three breakaways. And I think it was in the same period. It didn't convert on any of them. And that's the thing.
Starting point is 01:19:57 Everybody talks about great players and great moments. And it does take a while to work up to that. And we get, you know, Mario Lemieux took, you know, six or seven years to even, like, I think it took Mario four or five years to even make the playoffs. Michael Jordan, it took six or seven years for those Bulls teams to pick up. I get it. I get it.
Starting point is 01:20:12 But Johnny's had his time. And if Daryl Sutter's telling you the effort isn't there, it's one thing with, you know, when you use that trope about, well, it took Lemieux this and it took Michael Jordan this or whatever, if it takes you that long, at least show the effort along the way. No one ever looked at Michael Jordan and said, he just didn't put in the effort tonight. Ever. probably did but at least they were scorned as idiots yeah right and this thing is i'm not comparing gaudreau to michael jordan because i don't think it's totally comparable but the
Starting point is 01:20:46 reality is thank you for saying that i i think i think you know what i'm getting at here i think you know it's not about talent here it's about effort why not compare johnny gaudreau to johnny gaudreau how about that so we got uh 64 points in 80 games as a rookie and then here's where no not even just yet then 78 and 79 then oh bit of an off year 61 and 72 and this is where the standard is set here 84 points in 80 games 99 points in 82 games that's where the standard is set that's what i expect johnny gaudreau to be last year 58 and 70 yeah i mean it's good compared to most players it's good it's not johnny goudreau and this year 26 in 36 it's not 98 man he's on a better goal scoring pace but also steve uh i didn't want to interrupt but
Starting point is 01:21:43 uh fun fact about the miracle on ice it was it they had to come back and beat finland to win the gold oh did they yeah yeah the miracle on ice is in it wasn't the it wasn't like the gold medal game because it it was still uh they did round robin play it wasn't even like a single elimination uh like bracket style tournament it was the round robin and the u.s beats the ussr and then the next like two nights they come back and they gotta beat phil finland again to win the gold medal for the olympics and the soviet union they went and they beat uh sweden for the silver medal i imagine mercilessly all right it's 20 nothing after one you know because like in your head you imagine it to be oh there's the finale of the u.s versus the soviet union but they went
Starting point is 01:22:31 back and they played two days later oh yeah that's that's like i remember one of the best sports stocks i've ever seen i think it was the 30 and 30 on the indiana pacers versus the new york knicks when the pacers had reggie miller and i was so invested by the end of it and then at the end it's just uh the pacers went on to lose in the conference final and i'm like that's a second round series the one where uh reggie hits hits like nine points in 10 seconds is that the one you're talking about uh i think so i want to say it was the spike lee thing and Little Town vs. New York second round series
Starting point is 01:23:10 and I'm like, what? oh yeah, and then they got eliminated, they weren't even close I had no idea, anyway Johnny Gaudreau would lose to the Soviets Darryl Sutter is setting the tone for the next generation, built around Kachuk
Starting point is 01:23:28 Gaudreau is gone we were talking about teams and, you know, there aren't that many sellers. Flames are only two points out, but they've played 36 games to Montreal's 31. I mean, the Habs would have to go on some kind of slump and the Flames would have to heat up. And even then, they're still tied with the Canucks
Starting point is 01:23:57 who have only played one more game. The Flames are a sleeper seller and they're one bad week away from being a seller who's your guys fourth team for that spot because we have a kind of edmonton toronto and winnipeg locked in for the top three who's your fourth team i i picked i know i picked edmonton to miss which i was wrong about but but now winnipeg at winnipeg uh i would say montreal montreal yeah i said toronto montreal edmonton winnipeg or sorry toronto montreal calgary winnipeg were my north division picks it's amazing to me that more isn't being made about potential first round series because let's assume the the top four at least
Starting point is 01:24:40 remains the same four teams forget about the order leafs first round series against connor hellebuck and the jets oh shit least first round series against connor mcdavid and the edmonton Oilers oh shit Leafs first round series against the Habs in general oh shit we're in for a good time Steve your bosses haven't told you hey this is the entire reason we did this this is why they didn't have created the North Division they didn't know people react like this yo you got a bunch of TV ratings yeah there's no bad series any combination of those four teams there's no bad series exactly any comment if the sen snuck into the playoffs there wouldn't be a bad series no it's canada okay maybe like you know sometimes you say things and it's a little aggressive but
Starting point is 01:25:26 yeah that was a lot it was a lot it was a lot but like seriously seriously we're matt murray the comeback kid like and that's what would have to be he'd have to win every game every game i mean they're not like considering how bad the goaltending's been they're not that far out i don't know i'm just saying i'm just saying i don't think they have the good kachuk so i like them yeah the good kachuk he you know the only reason he's the good kachuk is because he hasn't been on a team that would be worth hating um i i love what the kachuks bring love what they bring i think they're amazing and i think any of them would be a hero here in toronto and i wish they were here yeah but they don't play for my team i know screw them getting back to the flames
Starting point is 01:26:11 they they have been playing like assholes since daryl sutter came on board uh luci has just been brutalizing guys he took out i think it was justin bailey on the canucks he's basically done for the season um it was actually someone caught it yesterday on his instagram story he was um on his way to new york and okay if you play for a canadian team and you go to the states you're writing off a large chunk of your season forget the injury you're probably not coming back um another thing to look for and i haven't seen a thing about it on twitter so i guess just nothing's happening then andrew manjapani oh absolutely be getting suspended for that oh it's hard it's horrible uh manjapani i want to say who'd he hit kyle connor
Starting point is 01:27:02 i don't know it's but it's you go look at what alex chase on oh no it's mark shifley manjapani cross checks mark shifley like in the neck and i i don't know how you look at this and say it's any different from what alex chase on did to jimmy vc to get suspended from uh for a game the only difference is chase on did it after the whistle and manjapani got two minutes for cross-checking cross-check the guy in the fucking neck i don't care oh he didn't initially hit him in the neck it rode up his shoulder well whose fault is that manjapanis being adults jesus it's his fault that he cross-checked the guy in the neck he should 100 be getting at least what chase on got that's ridiculous jets fans should be up in arms about that that's stupid oh and that was
Starting point is 01:27:56 two days ago oh so he definitely got nothing yeah nothing that's that's so stupid that's really stupid i don't get that i don't get that at all um so i know we've got a bit of an extended press conference to get to so let's do it the presser s d p the steve dangle press conference all right so this is going to be a special episode because we have zoo corner and history corner we're gonna start with zoo corner because we've been mean to steve so steve this comes from uh matt on twitter and this is a double whammy because not only is it about the zoo but you will also be ranking by best so oh yes my specialty matt wants to know what's the best animal at the zoo take it away i was about to say what's the
Starting point is 01:28:56 criteria and i remembered yep yes so by the way i just realized there's all this old spice stuff behind me because we shot blue and white therapy today um uh well oh it's difficult there's no more elephants that makes me very sad um the darwin fish tank is great but that's cheating because that's dozens of animals uh i'm gonna say there are two animals in particular that adult or child alike always get a reaction hi adam adult or child always get a reaction there's the otter everyone loves the otter did you fucking guys mute me no no we can hear you we're listening what are you talking about i saw you nodding your heads and i'm just like
Starting point is 01:29:53 genuinely give you a zoo corner and listen judging by your face no imagine maya launch adam's history quarter was hey fuck you guys anyway here's the mystery keep going you're doing a great job the otters kids and adults alike love the otters and i think this is the exact name the lion-tailed macaque it's a monkey and it's called the macaque and it used to be one of the first things you see if you go in the zoo you have an option go right or go left if you go left it's the macaque and they play with sticks and stuff and it's a lot of fun and they're like kind of interactive except don't actually interact with them a zoo employee will yell at you don't be stupid you freaking idiot uh i am going to rank the otter as best and the macaque is second best
Starting point is 01:30:47 and then i'm going to give it to the polar bear as well because they they're a signature part of the toronto zoo and they're pretty unbelievable animals like they're crazy they are nuts i was there i was there when they fed a polar bear a watermelon once and when you see an animal bite a watermelon you respect it i i gotta ask what kind of lunatic do you need to be to be the person that that has to sweep poo out of the polar bear spot oh like like you gotta be if you're if your job is to be the vet for a polar bear you're insane no so the the polar bear like people aren't just like oh yeah i'm real chill i'm used to the polar bears by now and they're like sweeping up after the polar bear while they're in there i imagine
Starting point is 01:31:39 the polar bear you know they go into the little inside part and it's safe the one that is really dangerous and the animal i don't want to sweep out at all is the komodo dragon and the reason for that is uh their their saliva is poisonous and i think they have to wear a suit like just to go in there it's uh bites are pretty bad too right like aren't they you break your bones the the well if if they don't break your bones you'll still die um and the the way they kill their prey is they bite you and they just follow you for a few days until you die and then your dinner and then they eat yeah it's the komodo dragon man the komodo dragon is uh that's a scary animal and if you want to see something creepy you can either go to the zoo when covid's over
Starting point is 01:32:33 or you can look it up on youtube watch them run komodo almost every animal is faster than you think it is yeah but the way they run it's almost like their arms are like circles you know what i it's just weird and they're and weirdly their their torso stays about the same but their arms are flailing everywhere and it's just they're creepy things it's like snake arms every animal in the zoo is like the the pinnacle of evolution nothing is wrong like they're just they're they're still on this planet for a reason they're incredibly efficient and the the komodo dragon's terrifying nice so if we're ranking it by best and then most terrifying i'm gonna say the komodo dragon i am sort of surprised you didn't put camels in there because they're pretty cool and
Starting point is 01:33:17 they've got tons of personality and spunk they are super cool um you know i was on a first name basis with them uh scoodles shout out hope you're still with us i think you are um we also had sally the camel because you have to every zoo has a sally every single one um yeah big big big fan of the camels the they will spit at you though they have you been spat at by a camel no because we work with the dromedaries and they are less likely to do that the bactrian camels with two so dromedary camel has one hump bactrian camels have two those dudes will spit especially the unfixed ones the un the difference between a neutered camel and an unneutered camel is they're double the size it's it's freaking unbelievable oh i could talk about this for
Starting point is 01:34:10 days can you tell by the way bactria one of the successor kingdoms to alexander the greats empire just throwing that out there too and with that transition we'll move on to history corner steve i'm shocked at the amount of information you've retained from your summers at the zoo like all these years for seven years yeah yeah all these years later you still remember everything it's quite impressive battery and camels are huge holy smokes i worked i worked there for seven years um i had to do the tour so you got to know about the zoo when you give the tour and also i did that carousel video that i that i tweeted out recently so i needed to learn some things for that um i've got to stand i got to i got to touch an elephant i've got to feed a giraffe
Starting point is 01:34:52 i got to feed a hippo i got to feed obviously camels and ponies did the camels and pony rides what else god I've gotten to do some really cool shit and now we're going to hear about some cool shit from Adam so this is from Wes Wes wants to know I'd love to hear Adam's thoughts
Starting point is 01:35:15 on the Stuart monarchy of Britain this is what we teased a couple episodes ago and Adam is ready to go Wes said to me this is the most fascinating era of English slash British history and I look forward to hearing what adam has to say adam take it away okay so um the the stewart dynasty i mean
Starting point is 01:35:38 like i can't cover the whole thing in one history corner be ridiculous it's it's such a huge part of british history but i'm going to take you up to the most important part that i believe you should know and that's the war of the roses or the uh the british civil war that included ireland scotland wales everybody was involved okay jesse's getting up and he's leaving he doesn't give a shit uh Um, so here's the deal. Stuart monarchy is, is, is, is major for a few things early on. And this is during King James's time. Uh, this would be your union of the three crowns, which is Scotland, Ireland, England. Uh, Oh, there you go. Oh, Ooh, the tote bag showed up, Jesse. Very nice. Um, this is a big deal because it meant that Scotland, England, and Ireland were not going to
Starting point is 01:36:23 uh, go to war with each other. James came to the throne after Elizabeth the first died without a child. And, uh, it basically united all three crowns, which is, it's kind of remains that way today, along with the Welsh crown. We don't want to forget about the Welsh. Now. Um, he also, it's also kind of famous because they were like, you know, how Americans were in the sixties with, um, communists, they were like, well, there's a communist around every corner. Um, like they, i want you to take that and imagine it it's it's the 50 or the 14 or 1500s and it's catholics they were terrified of catholics or papists as they called them so they saw papists around every corner and so he was everybody kind of hoped that james was going to be a moderating influence in
Starting point is 01:37:08 fact he was an extreme protestant um and tried to heal the divisions with between the the hardcore protestants and then the kind of normal protestants uh which became like you know the hardcore guys left and went to America and, you know, founded Plymouth and all that sort of thing. But basically the King James Bible, which is still used today, was the first Bible that was translated in English on a, like a wide scale. And that's a big deal because you got to remember in Catholicism at the time, most people that followed the Catholic religion could not read the texts. They could, they would just have to trust what guy on the podium said. And so what they, what the Brits wanted to do with this was say well no everybody can read this if you can read which most people
Starting point is 01:37:51 could not still but if you can read english you can read this and it opened the bible up to a ton of interpretations which are already begun at that time now there was the uh you know the remember remember the fourth of november whatever guy fox blowing up parliament that happened at this time as well uh we're not exactly sure why that happened but this is all in one guy's reign But the prevailing thought is hardline Catholics trying to blow up Parliament to send a message. But there was some like anti-witchcraft laws. And also it was the beginning of real. The what I would say is still a sore point between Irish and English relations. So at the time, and you wonder where colonialism comes from, this is sort of part of the beginning of it in England, at least. The British and Scottish who were Protestant went into Ireland and kicked the Irish off their own farms and created these mega estates that the Irish then had to work as essentially serfs or indentured servants.
Starting point is 01:38:57 And indentured servitude means basically you agree to work for somebody for free for X amount of years. And at that point, at the end of it, you get some something for free. So what used to happen is if they were if they tried to go to North America, they would travel over and their ride on the ship would count as what they were paying back with their indentured servitude. So the first people to go over and work the fields in North America were Irish, and they were the ones that had to pay seven or eight years of their life just to make the voyage over, just to potentially start a farm after that seven or eight years was up. It's crazy. And then the Atlantic slave trade happens after that, but we're getting ahead of ourselves. Now, more importantly, Charles, who is James's son, takes over and he was not supposed to be the successor. His eldest, I guess his older brother died. And Charles is a bit of an abrasive idiot. So what you need to know is that it's like it's like, you know, the spoiled rich kid who has got a couple of friends who are kind of slimy and gross. And one of them was this guy named Buckingham. And Buckingham, nobody liked him. He was kind of a slithery guy. And Charles couldn't get Parliament to agree on giving him money. So he enacted what was called a forced loan on the British people. And basically, he said, due to an old like ancient law, I'm in a crisis state. Parliament won't give me money for the things that I want to do. I'm going to force a loan on you, meaning that they would just go to different towns across the country and take money and take things.
Starting point is 01:40:34 And so you can imagine that made him extremely popular with people. And good luck ever getting that money back if you're a peasant, because they're never going to pay you back. It's a forced loan. You're never getting that money back. buckingham used it to support protestants in france during the 30 years war france then declares war in england it's a mess and this leads to uh in one way or another the the the war of the roses or the english civil war so what's important about the stewart dynasty is
Starting point is 01:40:58 it was not exactly well run but charles was the guy that gave up absolute rule now the brits always had parliament and that sort of thing so it wasn't like you know absolute rule in the sense that like in France, whatever the king said was done. In England, it was a little bit more like you shared some power with some local lords and that sort of thing. But still, really, the king had a lot of power. At the end of the British Civil War, sorry, the English Civil War, the government makeup looks completely different. And what you have is a move much more towards constitutional monarchy. The monarch was deposed and there was three different fights and the Scots got involved and the Irish got involved. And really, it's so weird because the Irish end up screwed double and
Starting point is 01:41:47 triple times. Like they got the worst end of the British Civil War, no question. And I think probably the lasting legacy of this is England becomes and Britain becomes the first place in Europe that takes a king, keeps them after a revolution, actually reinstitutes them, but limits their power and that's created the government that you see today and so it's very it's very very interesting because um i mean obviously it's very complicated i'm completely ignoring oliver cromwell and all the things that happened there and the uh and and the you know the devastation of you know across the entire country but the stewart monarchy is famous i think particularly for that that's a really important thing because as you see the centuries kind of
Starting point is 01:42:32 go on you see the russian monarchy fall you see the french the austro-hungarian all they all fell the British monarchy is stuck around. And the reason for that is because with more and more intensity, the power was given over to the people. And then the royalty, the royals became more of like a, you know, a centerpiece, you know, a nice ceremonial thing. And, and it, it, it powered England, I think, to be the world's dominant superpower, because they weren't reliant on, and I love Dan Carlin's favorite podcaster says this, it's the genetic roll of the dice. When you've got a king, he might be great. He might be crazy. And so when you have a parliament that keeps the king in check, if he's not a great king, parliament can still be great despite him.
Starting point is 01:43:23 And England was able to do that. Now, this was a completely devastating, terrible time to be on the island. But after this, you have, I mean, the settlements had already started at Jamestown and at Plymouth. So they'd already made their way into America. So, you know, there's 150 years there of colonialism that's coming and economically it boosted a, basically a broke country on an island into the world's foremost superpower on the backs of a lot of horrible things happening, but that's world history for you. So anyway, that's the Stuart monarchy. I hope that was interesting. There's so much there. It's very, very deep and very, very complex. Uh, but I hope i did an okay job of of at least getting the early stewards out there for you did they have polar
