Starting point is 00:00:00 The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! I had an interesting conversation before the show started with Steve talking. Steve just said, you know, I re-watched some old stuff and I want to talk about it. And we're like, uh-oh. What dark hole are we going down now? No, we don't have to. but i so every summer what's my tradition i watch hockey while there's no hockey on right so i go
Starting point is 00:00:38 back and like i'll watch every matthews goal every neilander goal every marner goal every you know the playoff one short and i started to wonder why was i so upset because gosh i remember being really upset and i went back and watched well i'll be honest we were we were feeling ourselves a little bit we were looking at our best videos on youtube in terms of viewership and number three now is the hockey guy yeah so thank you for watching that that was amazing we couldn't we couldn't believe the response to is amazing unreal so that was the previous episode number two number one is tavara signing with geronimo number two is when the leafs lost in game seven this year and i went back and watched that and i i was like gosh i can't wait to see why i was so upset
Starting point is 00:01:29 and i and i listened to all the reasons that i laid out and i'm upset all over again really i'm not no i'm not upset all over again but it definitely made me um i understood the pain i'm not as upset of a person i've had some time to relax but i understand the pain has marner trending all summer kind of relaxed you a little bit oh like guys relax chill like every day every every day i'm actually looking right now to see if he's trending was it because going into the series and when they were up 3-1 everybody thought it was inevitable they were gonna win and then it didn't happen oh yeah there's a story i can't tell but i will one day i lost money really yeah a lot i didn't gamble it was one day one day i can't i i know people
Starting point is 00:02:24 hate when i play coy like that i literally i literally can't um but it was uh yeah yeah i was upset and then i listened to why i was upset and i understand but i'm still you know i'm watching all the matthews videos and and the goals and i'm remembering jason spezza exists and that makes me happy jason spezza exists isn't that great good morning everyone jason spezza exists have a blessed day that's how i feel about jason spezza jack campbell oh good soup beautiful guy yep very very happy about freddy's gone hey that's see that's mean that's mean that's bad No, it could be a good thing, depending on how you feel. You're like, oh, yay, Freddie's gone.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Freddie lost his starting job, so it's good for him. I don't know how I feel about this energy. I don't know how I feel about this. No, no, no. Let's go down this road now. So Mitch didn't score. Austin didn't really show up. The defense was great, and that's all we've ever asked.
Starting point is 00:03:28 And it still didn't allow us to win. Like, if we could have just got some good defense, and then we get into this series. Why is this the way we started? I didn't ask for this. We ended that series with, if we could have just had some offense. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:03:41 It's painful. We didn't have any Freddie Anderson meltdown playoff games either, which where he was prone to. That's what riled me up so much is it wasn't, the year before, I listed off all the things that went wrong.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Right? This year, I listed off everything that went right. And it was almost everything. almost everything went right i'm not sure that i feel the same sort of hope if almost everything goes right and you still lose to a team that finished oh 18th also to be clear it's not hope their number one center got was eliminated in the first game yeah that's not everything going right okay i don't think you can that's a fairly large one yeah right but i mean yeah but then
Starting point is 00:04:28 then but then then they went up three games to one without him the whole time yeah
Starting point is 00:04:34 sure the entire time as I worded it very true yeah and then they lost Jake Muzzin and they were down
Starting point is 00:04:41 two nothing in game six but guess what without Jake Muzzin the entire time they came back and then in overtime they outshot Montreal 13 to 2
Starting point is 00:04:48 remember that they outshot them 13 to 2 without Jake Muzzin the entire entire time Jesse have you lost have you re-watched game seven no i've re-watched it once and from puck drop at the
Starting point is 00:05:05 like midway through that first period you know they're not gonna win that oh 100 and like i remember having that exact same feeling when i watched it i knew i was like oh this game's over montreal's gonna win and then when you re-watch it same feeling you can see it when they didn't win game five i thought they're in trouble i thought they had game six i didn't know i thought they And then game six, I was like, oh, they definitely don't have game seven. Now, I honestly, and I was the one going into that series. You guys called me crazy for saying like, oh, I don't know. Like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:36 I don't know about this, guys. And like, no, there's no fucking possible way. They can't do it again. But can't do it again. And they did it. They did it again. The Leafs could win the President's Trophy this year and go in against the worst team on a 20-game losing streak.
Starting point is 00:05:51 And I'd be like, I don't like the looks of this. and their star player just lost their dog yeah like it's terrible right it's terrible who lost their dog I was like is this in reference to something
Starting point is 00:06:07 is this when I had to get Iggy from the pound I don't know remember when Iggy went to the pound he did I do remember that and I thought I'd pick him up and he'd be tail between the legs and scared nope
Starting point is 00:06:22 They're like, yeah, he just got here, and he's been chasing the cats. I had a good vacation. Jesse, if you could, I'd like you to show off your sweater to the camera. This is the SDPN. We're just having Jesse be the model today. The SDPN sweater. Now, usually, it doesn't come that wrinkly. Oh, I literally took it out of the package.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Okay, so it does come that wrinkly then. So give it an hour to hang on the shelf. But, Jesse, I would like you to show off how skinny it is. As in, like, you know, if you're a hot boy like me, you can't wear a sweater unless it's thin like that. That's, like, almost T-shirt, right? Yeah, it's like a light sweater. Like a very nice light sweater. It's a fall or spring version.
Starting point is 00:07:02 If you want the no sweater with Jesse's face on it, which I don't blame you, that is more of a winter wonderland. You're outside throwing snowballs at people's sweaters. Those ones are champion, and they're, like, super thick, and they're, like, double layered, especially the hoodie. The hoodie feels really nice. Is that one finalist, then? Oh. Come on. Collapses in game seven
Starting point is 00:07:26 SDPN.ca I have the thicker No sweater and it's like being hugged by Jesse The whole time The entire time There's a full like track suit I call it Because you can get the gray The heather gray sweatpants and then the heather gray hoodie
Starting point is 00:07:43 And you can get a full set Or if you want to do the summer thing You get the heather gray t-shirt and then the heather gray shorts There's a full set for that collection. I do like that t-shirt a lot. The no one? No, actually the dangle navy one. It's a really good one.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Just a good straight ahead gray tee. Who doesn't need that? It's great. Yeah. Hey, listen. I want to get into me undies now. It's a lot. I feel like we're doing the Alex Jones thing.
Starting point is 00:08:08 Remember where Alex Jones took those diet pills and they had it before and after shot? And he's exactly the same. Have you ever seen that? No, no. You've never seen that? So back when he was allowed to be on Facebook and YouTube, he has the way he makes money. And by the way, he makes a boatload of money. He told 60 Minutes he didn't make any money.
Starting point is 00:08:27 He makes tons of money. And so he sells this, from what we understand, allegedly kind of medically – it's almost like sugar pills, right? Like literally you're not sure if any of this works. Jesse's looking at it. and Alex Jones, he's like, ah, I've been taking these diet pills for weeks, and I'm losing a lot of weight, and then they actually had him post a side-by-side.
Starting point is 00:08:49 He's like, look at me then, and look at me now. It's the Spider-Man meme. There's no, yes, yeah. There's literally no difference, and it's quite funny, but that's how I feel, but really, we're just selling you T-shirts. It's nothing.
Starting point is 00:09:01 We can't help your health. Get your COVID vax. That's all we can really say. And that'll be the Leafs this year. It's the Spider-Man meme. See how we brought it all back? Jesse's bringing it in here. I don't know how he did it.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Oh, look at that. Right on the screen behind. Oh, there you go. I love it. Thanks for that. Thank you, Jesse. That's great. That's great.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Are we going to leave him in his nipples there? See? Yeah, at a point at his nipples. Can we not? So hang on. I'm just... Oh, I can't. I can't.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I can't. It's superimposed. But you know what I meant there. I was just slapping his back. How do you do that in real time? That's unbelievable. It's pretty cool. Before we just get into the actual hockey here, which we probably should have gotten 10 minutes ago.
Starting point is 00:09:41 A surprising bunch of stuff. The thing I want you to know, too, is we have been getting a ton of complaints about Apple Music and Google Podcasts. And people are straight up asking us if we have stopped posting to them, which is absolutely not the case. We don't know what the problem is. We keep refreshing. And I believe the Hockey Guy episode pushed through yesterday after Jesse refreshed it. So we're going to be on it. Right on time.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Refresh, I know. Refreshing the feed where possible. And we don't know what the problem is And the funny thing is Is that everybody we reach out to From Google and Apple has no answer So we're trying to figure out what the issue is But it seems like
Starting point is 00:10:16 I know in the case of Apple Music It's not specific to our podcast I do know that every single podcast in the world Is having the same issue And then with Google I don't actually know But I do know that Apple's having that issue So I'm assuming Google is too
Starting point is 00:10:33 Probably when you have too many updates because they update these things like every week um owned by google youtube yeah that is a platform we're on without yeah so you can watch you can watch us on youtube also we should probably mention this more often but if you want to listen to the show ad free you can do it if you have a subscription to the athletic oh we're on the athletic and you get access to the audio and there's no ads on it if you just if you have the athletic avenue listen to it and they have a little podcast feature you just listen to it it's awesome we have a lot of things we should mention every show we just don't and do not listen there's a lot listen why would you want to listen to this
Starting point is 00:11:07 show or watch this show without me talking about shaving my balls like i don't understand maybe you prefer the show like that yeah people are like do you have to be so descriptive i'm like listen it's in the script okay my favorite one is the i think it's the most recent one you did where it's space balls that's right yeah and you've seen them that's right and i get the script every week And you know what's funny is I get DMs from people. I'm not kidding. And I know that – listen, I know the majority of people who listen to this show are just normal people like myself. Like you get up every day too early.
Starting point is 00:11:38 It sucks, and it's a Monday and whatever. But there are some people that are emotionally affected by those ads. And not for any particular reason that you go, oh, I guess I can understand that. It's just I hate you for reading them. And I – and it's funny because they always start the same way. It's like, listen, I understand the need for – I understand the need for revenue. but I just want you to know I hate your fucking face when you read those ads.
Starting point is 00:12:02 And I'm like, listen, that's my job. I don't know what you want me to do about it. I didn't think we paid for this exposed brick. Those ads paid for this studio. Like, I don't know what you want me to do. We're trying to put together a better product for you, okay? What else do you want? And that means selling ball shavers.
Starting point is 00:12:19 All right? If you've got a problem with my pal selling ball shavers so that we can get more exposed brick and Jesse can put nipples on the screen Do you want me to put Alex Jones back on? No! I very don't. Can you superimpose his body over Steve's?
Starting point is 00:12:36 No! No! No! I could. I know you could. No one should have that much power. All right? I am defending the both of you.
Starting point is 00:12:49 I think he got fatter in the second one. He did. He did. There's more belly fat. I know. It's just... Yeah, look. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I can't talk. I can't either, man. It's basically what I look like. Jesse says nothing. I know, right? Did you notice that? Did everyone notice that? Anyway, listen.
Starting point is 00:13:09 There's a lot of hockey to get to, so we should get to it. The first thing being, obviously, a message to NHL GMs. If I may. NHL GMs. I would just like to let you know that offer sheets. Offer sheets. Not only can they work, but they can work for all parties involved. Case in point, the Montreal Canadiens, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Arizona Coyotes.
Starting point is 00:13:37 The soon-to-be Tempe Coyotes. Okay? This is one of the most— The Oklahoma City Thunder of the NHL. Yeah, literally. There is—I don't know if there's a bad side to any of this. Usually with a trade, you're like, ah, who won, who lost? I don't see an L here for anybody.
Starting point is 00:13:55 I could see there being one for, ironically, the most likely L out of the three is Carolina. Yeah. And that's interesting, but there's still an upside there. And Jesse mentioned it when we first talked about the Cockney Emmy offer sheet. And we'll start there. So Carolina, you're the one, you guys are the ones who, you know, you put the offer sheet forward and you think that you have to put an offer sheet forward that is compelling enough
Starting point is 00:14:20 that you think the other team won't match it. And the compensation is low enough so that your organization isn't hamstringed by this deal. Right, right. Now, they have a strong farm system. They built mostly from within. Obviously, some very suspect moves this offseason. Again, if you could spend 6.1 on Kakeniemi,
Starting point is 00:14:40 tell me why you can't spend 9 on Hamilton. Don't understand it. They drafted and developed Nadelkovich. What a success story. Fired him out the window the next chance they got. Shit for him. And they got two injury-prone goalies in their 30s to replace him. Like, I would love to know if anyone in Carolina's room was like,
Starting point is 00:14:59 well, we can afford the first and third because we got a third for Nedeljkovic. So really, it's like a first in Nedeljkovic. And I'm like, that's horrible. That's still bad. That's worse. What are you talking about? One day, somebody's going to actually tell us what went on with Nedeljkovic. I would love to know.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Or half of the things they've done this offseason. But, by and large, offer sheets are back on the menu. Well, but what I want to say is, if you're Carolina, the thing with Cockney Emmy, everybody's like, oh, he makes $6.1 million. Oh, my God. Here's the thing, though. This year. If you want to sign him to a longer-term deal, which is what he wants, Jesse, what can happen? They can sign him at any number.
Starting point is 00:15:37 That's right. They don't have to sign him at the 6.1, but Montreal would have had to. Right. So, not only are you screwing Montreal, and listen, screw Montreal. Screw another team. Why not? For all the reasons we listed at the beginning of the show. Yeah, go screw the other team.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Whatever. I think sometimes GMs forget that they're competitors and it's not all about relationships. Sometimes you're trying to actually beat the other team. Yes. And sometimes you're literally trying to screw them and it's just naked and that's okay. But here's the thing. They end up with a pretty good player who probably needed a change of scenery, let's be honest. A player who was not developed properly by his own admission and probably by Marc Bergevin as well.
Starting point is 00:16:13 The fact that he probably should have stayed in Sweden an extra year. I mean, it was really, it was a good pickup at the time because they needed centers, but the problem, sorry, Finland. What did I say? Sweden? Yeah. Okay. I meant the other one.
Starting point is 00:16:24 I meant Finland, right? Adam, the, the, the thing I'm trying to say is that like Montreal, um, Montreal goofed that because Montreal goofed the position they were in when they drafted him. They should have had centers already. You draft the best player available. You don't draft for position. They drafted for position. He had a good start.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I remember Grant McKaig saying he could be better than Matthews. Like, listen, this all was all happening. And then, you know, the next two years have been a bit underwhelming. And then, of course, he scratched in the Stanley Cup Finals. All that said, 6.1 form isn't going to kill you if you can get him at 3.5 to 4 for four or five more years. And he's your third line center. 3.5 would be masterful. Be beautiful.
Starting point is 00:17:09 It's still a very good hockey player. I would be shocked. It's, I wonder if he does, I mean, what this could be for Kotkaniemi is essentially a nine-year contract. Yeah. Right? Because he gets the one and then he can sign for eight. And that pretty much guarantees your whole stay in the league. I mean, basically, how many players get like an 11-year career or 12-year career if it ended at the very end of it, which it probably will not.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Yep. The biggest variable here, like Christian Dvorak. Well, hold on. Stay on Kotkaniemi for now. Well, sorry. but i say that to say uh cockney emmy is the well i guess the first round pick arizona got a bigger wild wild card but cockney emmy is not a um uh proven commodity proven commodity uh he's not the complete package yet right he's i mean he's definitely not a third overall pick uh the
Starting point is 00:18:01 way he's played he's fine he's he has lots of room to grow he could get better at three overall you want a player who hops in and plays his position well yes and probably plays right away um except when he shouldn't and this is this has been the whole thing with cockney emmy is um i don't think they did the best for his development i don't now did the habs do the best for the habs well i mean they just went to the stanley cup finals so i don't know it's kind of hard to argue against it If they felt keeping Kakenyemi out of the lineup in certain situations was the right decision, and then won and advanced and stuff, it's a little bit difficult to argue against. But now they lose this player.
Starting point is 00:18:46 But I would argue... With the development, Jeff Merrick brought up something interesting on 31 Thoughts. He said that maybe instead of, like, pulling him out of the lineup so consistently and scratching him, you start him on the wing. Yes! Why not just start him? They just seem to punish him. I'm sorry, you're young, we're going to have to punish you
Starting point is 00:19:05 You're 20 years old and we're asking you to play Second line center in the NHL Right away at 20 Start him on the wing, ease him into that And then if his future landing point is center Then he gets there eventually But why not just give him an easier go In the NHL so he succeeds
Starting point is 00:19:21 And then he grows from there Kadri and Nylander are similar In that they're both top 10 picks They were drafted as centers I believe But they spent their time in the minors And the organization Under different regimes
Starting point is 00:19:37 Had time to decide whether or not they even Liked those players in the center Naz they decided yes Willie they decided no Until the 2020 playoffs In game 5 Because why not everybody
Starting point is 00:19:54 Mystifyingly Toronto Maple Leafs Setting them up for success gotta love it gotta love it gotta love it hey hey yanni when was the last time you played oh well and they just hucked him oh my god yeah everything comes back to the leaves so uh so then we then we move on to so it works out for carolina now with montreal and we we have focused a little bit on montreal um but but carolina i mean obviously i think you get some depth and that's good and you probably yeah you overpay for him this year but it's a couple million
Starting point is 00:20:23 bucks who cares does anything that's happening carolina this offseason makes sense no no do we think that tom dundon okayed this not wanting to take revenge on the montreal canadiens because don waddell said if this wasn't a good hockey decision we wouldn't have made it well it was a slight against him well it was a slight against don it was slight against tom it wasn't a slight against dom uh because don don i keep saying dom um the argument again 31 thoughts was uh bergevin did waddell a favor because the number he did the number ajo assigned to is great perfectly fine like yeah it's um but tom didn't want to pony up that was the thing he didn't want to spend the money so this was the montreal canadians looking at them and going well they're
Starting point is 00:21:15 gonna cheap out and we're gonna get this player right so it was a slight against the owner not the gm the gm was happy to get him at that number so then so then did montreal screw carolina twice because they just made them overplay overpay for a player that's like not legitimately not worth six million time will tell um so then i want to move on to to montreal in this um so montreal obviously loses cock and yemi but they're able to parlay that into um christian devorah christian devorah who has become who is a little bit older is a definite and is a definite centerman we know he's a centerman and he's a bit of like a secondary weapon on the power play too you know what you're getting with christian devorah money in the bank for between 15 and 20 goals and montreal has this
Starting point is 00:22:04 unbelievable habit of um acquiring players on a bit of a down year and getting the best out of them yeah max domey and then oh and they just spidey sensed he was going to regress traded him for josh anderson who had a goal and then he goes out and scores however many he scored he had that unbelievable thomas tatar thomas tatar like i who would be shocked it's amazing how many players play their best hockey in montreal and how little they were able to get at a cocky yammy you know what i mean yeah it doesn't make much sense to me but um they go and get to borak and like i know there was that troll tweet going around oh he could get 90 points i would be shocked by that but i mean 20 plus goals 60 points 65 points maybe even flirt with 30 if he's put in the right
Starting point is 00:22:53 position sure i could picture that he was he was the guy who scored 72 goals one season in junior because he was on Marner's line. A guy I can pass to. Don't mind if I do. And he just did every single time. That's interesting. Bring up that point that you brought up just before this one. What was that?
Starting point is 00:23:12 It was about you triggered something, and now I forgot. Montreal getting the most of the guys? Yeah. When they trade for them? It was interesting that you – I thought it was interesting that you mentioned that because the more I think about it, the more I think that might have had to do with Claude Julien.
Starting point is 00:23:26 and I hate to make this about I hate to make this about the coach because you don't like Ducharme it's not that I don't like Ducharme personally as a person but isn't it funny that as soon as he took over we really started to see the
Starting point is 00:23:42 the cockney-ami relationship deteriorate and I think it's certain players under certain coaches like we know Domi and Julian didn't get along so Domi was fired, traded that's getting fired essentially yeah i guess or moved on from yeah um you know i i think uh i think with this particular case it can also be and nobody ever wants to admit this the player and the coach don't see eye to eye
Starting point is 00:24:06 not everybody can work together right and it doesn't matter how talented you are as a coach or a player there's going to be people that just do not work well under you i'm sure scotty bowman would be able to tell you multiple players that were really good that just they didn't like each other also coaches coaches are there to develop a culture but i don't think a lot of coaches are there especially in the national hockey league i don't think they're there to develop players i don't think most head coaches want to do that even coaches in a developmental league um oh god what was his name greg something he was the former head coach of the toronto marlies and i'll never forget uh it's the playoffs for the marlies they got two goalies scott clemenson and justin pogey
Starting point is 00:24:55 guess which one started uh clemenson clemenson that was 2012 2011 no it was long before that like like pogey is still there's still hope there's still you know he's this blue chip prospect greg moore greg moore so he's still the he's the top goalie prospect in the organization he is the great hope for this team and you start scott clements in this career journeyman ahead of him yeah he was who was like the backup goalie new jersey the year before yeah well he was better i didn't ask that no what so what he's better so what gives a shit i think maybe as leaf fans we should have been worried at that point that we made the wrong with the wrong bully rask or pokey that was what it came down to i knew right away did you i knew right away i always i always tell
Starting point is 00:25:46 the story when you're a kid you think your team can do no wrong and every move they make is the right one and i remember watching i think it was the 2005 world juniors and pokey and team canada were unbelievable and then i watched sweden finland and this finnish goalie stole the damn show and i remember on the broadcast and they're they're like oh and uh took a rask yeah first round pick of the toronto maple east and i didn't know that and i was just like what they have they have pokey and rask oh my god and then they trade him and i was just like that's a that's an enormous mistake because i was i would you know sugar plums dancing in their heads i was just imagining like pokey starting one game and rask starting the next and rast starting one game and
Starting point is 00:26:32 pokey starting the next and i was just like oh my god the leafs drafted curtis joseph twice and it's gonna be amazing and they're gonna have them forever and then they had neither that was very did pokey ever play in the nhl he had won one two games yeah he had a little stint yeah he has the uh the distinction of being the first player ever called up directly from the ECHL because the Ducks did not have an AHL team that year. Oh my god. That's a little unfair. Jesse, I got something that
Starting point is 00:27:01 I need you to pull up on the screen if you can. So with Montreal, they turn the first and the third into Christian Dvorak. Now let's talk about the Coyotes for a second because we haven't for a while. The Coyotes are in, if you're a Coyotes fan, you know this, but if you haven't been paying attention to the Coyotes, you might
Starting point is 00:27:17 not realize that in the first two rounds next year, they have eight picks. That's so ridiculous that's so ridiculous they have their own they have colorados and they have montreal's now montreal a lot of people thought when this first and third went for christian dvorak that it was an unprotected top 10 the it's actually a conditional pick so the conditions are the better of montreal or carolina's 2022 first pick will go to arizona but if either or both top 10 picks are both top 10 picks then montreal will instead transfer to arizona the worst of
Starting point is 00:27:51 montreal or carolina's 2022 first round pick meaning that if both carolina and montreal suck next year one will one will not but if they both did and it was both top 10 then then let's say they it was pick three and pick eight then arizona would get pick eight but a great deal for montreal in that respect yeah oh for sure it's nice a version of it to protect it and i would argue that christian dvorak doesn't warrant an unprotected first round pick even now but but the The interesting thing here is that Arizona, can you bring up their CapFriendly? Jesse, I've just sent you the link to it. Show me the forward group.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Show everybody the forward group. But here's what's happening in Arizona because it's fascinating. While Jesse brings that up, by the way, shout out Dominic Zrin, the founder of CapFriendly. He now works for the Chicago Blackhawks. Good for him. He got himself an NHL job. That's pretty sweet. Good for him.
Starting point is 00:28:49 for Don. Okay, can you see it there? Yeah, we're sitting on the forward group right now. All right, what do you see under 2022-23? Holy mackerel! What do you see? That's a lot of red. That's a lot of red. Oh, it's on the screen, nice. Whole bunch of UFAs. That's right. There are three forwards under contract.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Who are these two? 22-23. So the ones that you would still have, at least next year, are Keller, Nick Schmaltz, and Andrew Ladd, who, by the way, is still under contract in the NHL, it's crazy. I forgot that happened.
Starting point is 00:29:21 In the defense category, you have another couple UFAs. Chikrin, Goss Despair, and Connor Timmons are the only ones that are under contract for next year. You know, it's... You forget, hey, Phil Kessel's contract's almost up. That's how long we've been doing this show. They're trading him, too.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Yeah, well, I think Arizona's gonna be one of those, like, come and buy our shit at the trade deadline teams. They are, but every year there's a team we think is going to get like 40 points in the standings because they're so bad and they never do. Yeah. And I think it's going to be Arizona. They're going to be the ass team
Starting point is 00:29:58 that mystifyingly wins games and they're not there. I don't I have a hard time believing they're going to be in the actual race for last. Really? Yeah, because that's that's how this dumb league works. Okay. Okay. Point out the worst team. All right. They're not finishing. All right.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Jesse, don't show Steve every time. Who are their goalies? uh okay they don't have Aiden Hill they don't have Darcy Kemper they don't have Auntie Ranta oh dear name Arizona's goalies oh no you won't get it but guess anyway one of them is a person you definitely don't know another one is a person that you do know and that you'll be like oh boy how the mighty have fallen i have no idea okay so first off the one you won't know i don't think i don't expect you to know is joseph coronar oh yes i do he was a goalie for san jose last year there you go yeah well that so that's already super good it was like the third man wait is he their
Starting point is 00:31:02 backup right now yeah if you're the if you're san jose's third goalie behind martin jones oh martin jones is in arizona martin jones oh no oh oh no he's in philly i'm saying if you're san jose sorry what i meant is right right sorry my brain's not working properly okay okay come on name the other one okay uh can i have a clue a clue any clue all right let me see you decide what the clue is um oh my god this player started their career with the san jose sharks is that true yeah didn't know about it's on the screen for everybody watching at home they moved on to the chicago blackhawks uh oh no it wouldn't be yo i have no idea been a couple years in nashville where you could argue
Starting point is 00:31:54 their career took off up until this point they were sort of iffy nobody really took a chance on them oh no it's carter hutton it's carter well done steven dangle wow right i do remember reading carter hutton 750 grand you want to tell me that this team is going to surprise people they're not i changed my mind the only thing surprising about that is your take no i forgot you need a good goalie you do need a goalie to do that now listen it'd be fun if they did because they were like listen last couple years they haven't been completely out of it It's just that they didn't have any picks because they got fined. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:32:32 The issue with the Sens, they were in every game they got goaltending. Right. The games where they didn't have goaltending. Well, they still scored a lot. But they weren't in a lot of... Also, can you just for fun, can you name the two players that they have retained salary on and one player that they are paying a buyout for?
Starting point is 00:32:51 Just for fun. Oh, my God. This is just deep Arizona Coyotes trivia. Retained salary. Did they Very recently They retained on Ekman Larson
Starting point is 00:33:01 How much do you think Like 12% Like a million dollars Every year For the next 6 or 7 years Right Like until 26 27
Starting point is 00:33:08 They're going to be Playing a million bucks Of his salary That's a lot And then One person Who was on their team Last year
Starting point is 00:33:15 Who was no longer there Taylor Hall Darcy Kemper Darcy Oh they're retaining On Darcy Kemper Yeah no Taylor Hall makes no sense
Starting point is 00:33:22 And then their bio Scored a goal From his bottom with his butt. They bought out Michael Grabner? They bought out Michael Grabner. I know. Why'd they do that?
Starting point is 00:33:33 Love Michael Grabner. The butt goal. The butt goal. The one goal he had with the Leafs, I think. He scored like 40 the next year with the Rangers for no reason. He shot the first guy I've ever seen shoot negative 6%.
Starting point is 00:33:42 That was wild. So, I mean, the Coyotes are very clearly going through an aggressive rebuild. And what's surprising is, and I guess it's not that surprising because it's a smaller market team, is that it's gone largely unnoticed. like yes they're rebuilding and yes to coyotes fans i'm going to get a bunch of coyotes fans
Starting point is 00:34:02 going we know yeah we know you know but to the rest of the nh this is going to be an important storyline going forward especially as players are looking to add depth pieces let me run some names by you here like lost and kraus who's going to be an rfa there's a name j beagle and antoine rusell both guys that you know once they get to the trade deadline and they retain half almost something it's so nakedly what they were trying to do with that deal yes yeah phil kessel louis erickson's not gonna get you i don't think kessel starts the season in arizona you don't you think he's gone by then yeah that was my big worry with uh one of the trade trees is because we filmed i filmed like seven in two weeks yeah and that was the one where i was like if you screw me
Starting point is 00:34:46 and make it so i have to reshoot this i'm gonna hurt you ryan dezingle who's always traded at the trade deadline. That guy's a mercenary. And here's the other one that I think is super interesting is Anton Stralman. He's 35. Oh, I forgot about him. 5.5 million.
Starting point is 00:35:02 He's got a modified no trade. But at 5.5 million, he's a right-handed defensive player. And he's won Stanley Cups. This league's so funny, man. Hey, do you want a full season of Anton Stralman? Ew, no. you gotta you gotta trade picks along with them no gross and then fast forward like six months later hey do you want anton strong yes please oh my god he's so great cups all the cups it's so
Starting point is 00:35:33 true like it just it makes no sense i need him as my eighth defenseman give me now so you were saying in the next four weeks you think phil kessel is gone yeah okay stay in the camera for instagram before the 2021 2022 season begins phil kessel will play for a team that is not the arizona tempe glendale coyotes that wasn't your best by the way we should do a hot or not under that is this take hot or not as in and then and then we'll have a whole bunch of predictions you know what i'm saying i think we should start doing that like under our instagram hot or not on facebook when we were in high school do you guys have that you guys have in high school right yep yeah that was fun yeah terrible for you oh yeah i never at least you didn't have you never got
Starting point is 00:36:22 the results about yourself though right did you know you could i don't think you could see it thank god because i would have been devastated i remember a site where you could and it hurt i'm sure um two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar-raised matters. Luxury sales claim based on S&P Global Mobility Canadian New Vehicle Total Registrations for calendar year 2025 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. I should also mention that the Arizona Coyotes have submitted a bid for two parcels of a 46-acre tract of land that could be the first step in landing a permanent home. For the eighth time. Have we heard this before? The city of Tempe said it received one response before Thursday's deadline to request proposals issued for a July mixed-use project incorporating a professional sports franchise and entertainment district on a city-owned piece of land near Arizona State University, which makes a lot of sense because you want to ingratiate yourself to the youngins bring them in
Starting point is 00:38:03 the youth i bet it's cheaper to go to a coyotes game than it is an arizona state game basketball or football probably i almost can guarantee it the city could not legally name who submitted the response but the coyotes confirmed his statement that they put in the bid i mean listen they're not moving they're not moving no because they now out of arizona especially now that the ESPN and TNT deals are finalized. The NHL will not let them move. So they are searching for a temporary home after this year. Wow.
Starting point is 00:38:30 You would expect that. I mean, God, it would be hilarious if they ended up back in Phoenix because that arena is still there. Yeah, can't they play? That's where the Suns play. Yeah. Is it not? Yeah, I don't know why they can't.
Starting point is 00:38:41 I think maybe because you've got to pay for the crew to switch it over. Yeah, maybe it's not even fitted for that. It may not be anymore. I don't know. I don't really know. But what will be – they said Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. I think that was the original one. Isn't that where they used to play?
Starting point is 00:38:57 I don't remember. And then the Arizona State Fairgrounds could be a possibility. Anyway, there's a whole bunch of – yeah, yeah. Hosted the NBA's Phoenix Suns and WHA's Phoenix Roadrunners. So, yeah, I believe Veterans Memorial was their first. I thought it was. Anyway, I don't know. It only seats 13,000 people.
Starting point is 00:39:16 but let's be honest the coyotes are not going to make some money for a while and they need to and they have that's that's the temporary home yes and that's why they also have rev share for that right and the islanders survived with 13 000 people and look at how well they did different story different different market different intensity of fan base but all the same it would be really nice if we could stop fucking talking about this you know what i mean like the first episode that we ever did on this show in 2013 we were talking about where the coyotes were going to play well and and like good on the fans by the way the passionate fans that they do have who are still there despite all of this how could you not be passionate if you hung on this long well and
Starting point is 00:39:57 they've also like turned me on a lot of this because i'm willing to bet back then i was like i just move them move them screw it they don't like hockey obviously move them and that's not true the fans do like hockey it's i don't think they like i don't know having to go to glendale How many owners has this franchise had in 25 years? 14. Including the league itself. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:19 And, you know, it's something – it would be very interesting to talk to somebody who was involved in what happened with Winnipeg to Phoenix when that actually happened. Because a lot of people said, well, there's no way they could have made money. There's no way they could have made money. I wonder if you had just left the team in Winnipeg, what that – how that story would have been. And I wonder, I mean, the amount of money that they would have been losing, I wonder what it would be. And you could never figure this out. But what's the comparison to the amount of money the Coyotes have lost in all the moving and the ownership changes and the legal stuff? And that, like, think about that.
Starting point is 00:40:57 Like, if you were a lawyer in Arizona, think about how much money you could make off the Coyotes constantly changing shit. Like, you just built your house. You would think of that. I would never I'd be like I wonder how many hot dogs You could sell I wonder
Starting point is 00:41:13 How many Italian sausage It's just I don't know It's very I hope for Coyotes fans Especially the ones That listen to this show
Starting point is 00:41:20 That this Finally happens Because this I've been honest with you Like we've been doing this Eight years This is our eighth season I am all done
Starting point is 00:41:28 Talking about Where they're going We've been done But didn't we think This place was gonna be it Like Was this not supposed to be The Coyotes permanent home
Starting point is 00:41:36 And they got a new owner, and I wish them all the best. Katie Strang article comes out. Nevertheless. Well, you had a good several months. Do you see a situation where the league looks at moving them a little southeast to Houston? That's the only one that makes any sense. It's kind of in the same general region. I think they want to expand into Houston, don't you?
Starting point is 00:42:00 If you're going to go to the 30-14 league, that's what they would rather do. Because, okay, you're already losing money on the Coyotes franchise. You don't get the – because now – because Vegas costs $500 million as a franchise tag, plus they had to have an arena, plus, plus, plus, plus, plus. Seattle, $750 million, plus they had to have an arena, plus, plus, plus, plus, plus. All the things that NHL got paid. The owners group is going to say to the next person that wants to come along, it's a billion dollars. Just for the right, just for the franchising right. So you've got to have a billion dollars.
Starting point is 00:42:32 Or we could just move the Coyotes who have always been bad there. and that's not fair right like i think that's not i think arizona deserves better and i think houston deserves better and i think the league wants money i mean they're already thinking about teams 33 and 34 i'm sure oh yeah galaxy brain you move the coyotes to houston while their arizona stadium is being built you switch them back then you bring in the expansion team and you have a you have a market for the team right there if only they had been young and Exciting. That's kind of a neat idea.
Starting point is 00:43:03 It's a more creative idea than I've heard. Temporary home, you know? Yeah. And by the way, this is not disrespecting the Coyotes crest or the players or the fans. It's just... No, that idea is based on New Orleans, the basketball team. They had to go play in Oklahoma City when, I think, which I forget which hurricane it was. It might have been Katrina.
Starting point is 00:43:25 I think it was California. When Katrina happened. And they played there for, I think, a full season. and then they went back to new orleans and then okc got their team when seattle could wouldn't build an arena that's a really interesting idea you do it as like the hurricane situation in arizona where they don't have a stadium put them in houston for a bit you build the fan base then you give them their own team i like it interesting very very call me up betman i it would be a good time because i don't think the rockets are going to be very good for a bit here right after the
Starting point is 00:43:52 hardened deal oh they're awful they're yeah it's that kind of eviscerated them um also we should mention the astros though the canadians will not name an interim captain while shea weber is out a lot of us still think he's probably going to retire but remember like kipper nick kiprios like 18 months ago was like shea weber has got a lot of injuries probably gonna have to retire because of his foot and they're like well we don't know what you're talking about there's no foot injury here and then of course after the stanley cup final cup turns out that there is a career threatening injury but we do not know if he will be back the i mean the magical disney movie fantasy is he returns for the playoffs and if he does have to retire that's his swan song what
Starting point is 00:44:35 playoffs uh the stanley cup playoffs for the canadians in 2022 yeah well they'd have to make it well and i'm not convinced you go ahead i'm not and you write them off i'm not convinced you go you go ahead i'm not convinced this year a 18th and a 20 i listen i i don't disrespect the run they went on i don't watch they'll finish they'll finish like top 10 in the league and then get swept in the first round because nothing makes sense like the rest of us carry price is also out for first two months till christmas no it's not two months is it it's it's not like it's not short yeah it's not a little injury oh shoot i didn't know it was that long yeah i'll also i'll check so yeah so the thing is is that montreal finished 23rd and then 18th 24th oh sorry 24th
Starting point is 00:45:22 and then 18th so i'm not convinced i'm not convinced full season of cole caulfield uh that should be fun yeah that actually will be great he's such a fun watch um the nhl is going back to the olympics guys and what's interesting about this is that beijing is exactly 12 hours ahead of eastern time so if a game is an 8 p.m start in china that means it is an 8 a.m puck drop in toronto and at 5 a.m in vancouver which is manageable i think it is um the problem is the inevitable 4 p.m game in beijing oh we'll be in the dead of night in north america one of the many elements that nhl owners were hesitant about handing over their product to the ioc for well come on guys it's china you need to be you need to try to crack that market don't you you
Starting point is 00:46:07 know what though like for all the all the casuals who won't watch because it's at like four ah i'm not worried about that if you're watching again if you're watching this show you're the top of the top of the top you are a nerd all right yeah you're a hockey nerd and i it is fun it's like a sleepover it is fun to do that sometimes would i do that all season hell no would i do that for two weeks sure 2014 i had you over to my house for the uh for the olympic game sochi sochi and that started at what stupidly early 7 a.m we were all hung over and so tired i made breakfast for everybody and that was it was just it was the quiet and again it was such a mike babcock game low event boring that game sucked nobody talks about 2014 so cheap it's two nothing it was just
Starting point is 00:46:56 It was the worst game. No Backstrom. It was a solid victory. Yeah. Yeah. Just go. We played the right way. This is great hockey.
Starting point is 00:47:03 It was no fun. Boom. Backstrom. Backstrom. Was it a... It was like Sudafed or something. Yeah. For his nose or something?
Starting point is 00:47:10 Yeah. He was sick? It's supposedly a lot of athletes will take it because it helps. It's like a performance enhancer. You can breathe better. Yeah. I can use that. My nose is constantly blocked.
Starting point is 00:47:26 Yeah, it helps your lungs. Yeah, but what I remember at the time was a lot of people going, well, that seems ridiculous, it's just Sudafed, but also a lot of people in media going, I don't feel bad for him at all because this has been a giant issue. They told you not to do it, and he did it. Wasn't there a tennis player who— Maria Sharapova.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Right. And was it Sudafed? I don't—I might have been the exact same one, But for them, they had a like a six month lead off. The WTA initiated this new thing. And they're like, OK, in January, we're going to start testing for this specific performance enhancer. And all along, Times Square has been able to take it. And especially Russian athletes, it's huge amongst them.
Starting point is 00:48:09 And Maria Sharapova had a six month lead up to not take this thing. And then like first Australian Open happens January. She tests positive. And everyone's like, you knew you had six months. You had six months. this is a new rule and you screwed up nobody felt bad for her at all she got like a year suspension yeah for melodium which is a pharmaceutical developed in the ussr yeah there's a huge one uh banned uh it's banned by athletes however the debates on whether it is
Starting point is 00:48:39 actually a performance enhancer some athletes are known to many athletes were known to be using it before i don't know what it does but i some of the rules are strange because i remember i want to say it was curtis joseph in salt lake um he had like the flu or something and he couldn't have advil or something like that like he couldn't take like cold medication i i don't know it feels like you can maybe relax the rules a little bit i want to see one day the no testing olympics i want to see what the chemicals that scientists can do to put in the human body to get them to perform like how how much further could usain bolt go if he was allowed to take anything i'm sitting next to bilber i you don't want to watch that um i just everyone is mark mcguire right you want to see
Starting point is 00:49:28 dingers it's either that you're either hugely muscular or you're just long and extremely thin like it's it's you it would look like the real life version of mike tyson's punch out like it It would just be a bunch of Tysons and then this little guy. And then, like, you know, it's just – it would be a bizarre – also, it's completely immoral. Oh, yeah. What you're suggesting. Oh, yeah. It's the science Olympics.
Starting point is 00:49:51 Yeah. I mean, it's completely immoral and has simply happened before. Why has nobody made a TV show about that? Like, we've made, like, The Purge, but only, like, this would be, like, the Olympics version of it where all you – I don't think it's The Purge. Where it's not the purge, but like it's like – it's not about – all substances are legal, and it's about finding the best substance. And like all the evils – yo, that's a perfect like Amazon Prime show because they've got that one that's the anti-superhero one where they're like – all the superheroes become – are a part of a corporation, and they're like completely dark. I've never seen that one.
Starting point is 00:50:26 I think it's called The Boys, and essentially it's the anti-Avengers. So the Avengers are all good, and we mean well and whatever. This one's what would happen, I think, if superheroes really existed, which is they would take advantage of the system, break laws, be completely fucking crazy. Steal money. Steal money. Oh, yeah, yeah. And it's apparently like it's super, super good. So this idea that we think superheroes are just the good guys.
Starting point is 00:50:50 No, it'd be the evil dude. Yeah. The superhero. Imagine your boss reprimanding you ever if you could fly. Right. I can fly. I can simply I put my fist up and I fly. Goodbye, sir.
Starting point is 00:51:03 And you're... Because I was 15 minutes late? I was flying! That's what I was doing! I was having fun and flying! Well, why weren't you here on time, then? If you could fly so easily. Because I punched the sidewalk just to see if I could do it, and it shattered!
Starting point is 00:51:15 Because I am a superhuman! Well, Steve, we can't have that conduct in the workplace. We're going to have to let you go. What?! How am I going to pay the bills? Oh, wait, I can fly! So I'll be fine! I wonder if I can pay someone or get someone to pay me because I can fly.
Starting point is 00:51:34 Hey, did you order this burger? It's at your house before it's even made. I'll stare a beam into it and cook it. If I had the ability to fly, I wouldn't be doing Uber. That's because you don't have the grind mentality, Jesse. How funny is it that you get the ability to fly and the first thought you have is, Oh, I'll drive Uber. Yeah, but that's my superhero name is Uber, right?
Starting point is 00:52:03 Because it means over, and I'm over other people because I can fly. Literally over them. I hope you would do something more substantial with your powers. That's the show I want to watch on Amazon Prime. Which the Uber driver is going to fly. hey if you ever you ever like had to work a rush at dinner time wouldn't it wouldn't it have been great to have superpowers then if you ever had to work at the toronto zoo on a labor day long weekend it would have been great to fly also i'm not dissing uber drivers i'm just saying if you
Starting point is 00:52:41 can fly i want you to do something more yeah you're you're not dissing them you're simply saying they cannot fly but imagine if they could what were we talking about we were we were talking no we were talking about the olympics oh yeah would i ever complain about the commute to glendale if i could fly no probably not probably not so anyway that'll be exciting and obviously we will um we'll do our way too early predictions on roster and that sort of thing when i did my i did my rough rankings i have uh canada usa sweden russia finland czechs those that's my top seven the thing about finland is the finland finland is always like well we got you fifth or sixth and they always sneak into like third or fourth somehow because they
Starting point is 00:53:35 just want it right there's something about they're never an easy out even though there are like a country of what six million people they're small very small often confused with speeding am i right you know happens happens to the best of us and also you the best finnish race car driver in the world just signed with alfa romeo you should be very happy you don't spoil the next season for me oh no it's it's it's out there it's not gonna i'm not looking at the news it's not gonna spoil anything spoiler alert for season four of drive to survive i'm just telling you i don't watch the races because i don't want it to spoil the next season of drive to survive yes um the nhl uh put together what are you looking at nothing i thought i could sneak into text while you were talking
Starting point is 00:54:19 the nhl the nhl um has put in some pretty intense covid protocols for this season and you're gonna hear this and uh you're probably gonna say good probably good now Now, I thought that when, because of the way people have reacted to those who, and I want to make a distinction here, there are people who refuse to be vaccinated and there are people who cannot get vaccinated. And it's a very, very different subset of people. There are people who have conditions. For instance, I heard from a listener on Virgin Radio who said, listen, I have cancer.
Starting point is 00:55:00 The doctor said, can't have it because it could endanger me. I have a very weakened immune system. I can't get it. Well, that makes complete sense to me. Then I've also heard from the anti-vax community who will tell you what they want to tell you. There's also a subset, Adam, that I've discovered more and more recently. They're not anti-vaxxers. They just haven't.
Starting point is 00:55:22 Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Actually, I was driving up to my girlfriend's cottage on Friday, and the vax clinic had a lineup out the door because the vaccine passport's just been announced in Ontario as well. They said, we're not going to do it. We're not going to do it. Okay, we're going to do it because everybody else is doing it. And the federal government's going to do it.
Starting point is 00:55:38 So everybody's doing it. And in Quebec, especially where it's been extremely successful, what they have found is that once you announce the vaccine passport, as in you can't do anything, can't go to a leaf game, you can't go to a restaurant, you can't go to the gym, as of like October the 13th, if you don't have your vaccines, both of them and 14 days prior, which means you need to have your second dose by September the 30th for that October 13th
Starting point is 00:56:02 deadline. If you do not have it by then, you will not be able to do anything. So people are like, I guess I'll get, when are your taxes due every year? They're due in April, April 1st, April 1st. When can you start doing them? January 1st. When do most tax documents get March 30th, April 30th, April 30th. Yeah. A lot of them come in late. Yeah. Cause they don't really penalize you that much for being too late it's it's just human nature and that's what i because i've been hearing a lot of you know anecdotal oh this guy doesn't have it and no he's well he's got to get it before then and but and they're not like it's my rights damn it i've heard like three of those it's mostly just well i just haven't done it it just never got around
Starting point is 00:56:45 as a funny as a funny aside um i might know somebody through somebody else well i do know somebody through somebody else who was ardent anti-vax actually a few people and this is like a subset of friends and it's bill gates it's this it's that it's whatever the other answer is that you always hear and as soon as maple leaf sports and entertainment said you can't walk in the building without one they got them but they told their friends don't tell anyone so they're trying to remain anti-vaxxers but they have the vaccine they're gonna kill me they're gonna sterilize me They're going to put a microchip in me, but Columbus is in town and I want to see Zach Wierenski.
Starting point is 00:57:28 Right? So, you know what? Forget all of my scruples. I want to watch the Leafs versus Columbus. And I've seen this. I've seen this. But Giannis is in town and he just won a championship. You know?
Starting point is 00:57:40 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, I mean, listen, it's, and I've heard it from more than one group. Like it's been several subsets of my friends of friends. And you think like, okay. So I thought the NHL was going to wimp out on these. I honestly did.
Starting point is 00:57:53 When this was coming out, I thought it was going to be like, oh, well, we told them to get vaccinated and they didn't. Shoxy poo. But that's not what happened at all. The NHL laid down the gauntlet on this. And I have to give props where props are due. This is what we've been asking for for the NHL on things like gay rights and racial issues and all the other things that they won't touch. Thankfully, they chose vaccines to be the right thing. And the play on the ice and penalty calls and everything.
Starting point is 00:58:18 But at least with the vaccines, when it comes to people dying and potential lawsuits thrown at the NHL, because remember, big deal with the lawsuits. They're protecting their purse. And here's what they did. So this is directly from Elliott Friedman. Teams are the biggest news is a mechanism for teams to suspend unvaccinated players who are, quote, unable to participate in club activities. This includes situations where a player cannot travel because of local, provincial, state regulations or federal regulations. upon return. Meaning that if you, let's say you wanted to come into Canada and you're unvaccinated, well, you can't. So if a team comes for a Canadian road trip, you are suspended and you don't get
Starting point is 00:58:58 paid. And such individuals would forfeit the equivalent of one day's pay for each day. Meaning that let's say the Canadian road swing is in the East. So you got Winnipeg, you got Toronto, Ottawa, you got Montreal. That could take an entire week. You're going to lose an entire week's salary. Now you might think, well, for us, that's a few thousand bucks. It would hurt us, but wouldn't kill us when you're talking about like how what did tom wilson get like five games and it cost him like five hundred thousand dollars you're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the player could be it's a lot of time it could be a million unvaccinated players who are not exempted for the reasons given and uh there are some reasons i'll
Starting point is 00:59:36 get to that um so sincerely held religious beliefs um uh so the exact exceptions are unvaccinated status based on medical reasons a conflict with sincere sincerely held religious beliefs um establishment on the basis of balance of the probabilities of covet 19 arise out of the course of employment as a hockey player or quarantine uh being high risk of a close contact person so being high risk i enjoy the wording of sincerely held religious beliefs as in you can't just say i'm a jedi and i don't you know you know because you know somebody would do that i'm a jedi don't wear anti-vax i don't know if you know that or not yeah i started my own church today yeah church of jedis yeah church yeah well actually that's a real church by the way i believe they
Starting point is 01:00:20 are registered um you can actually be a jedi if you want to be in the states and in canada i think it's an international thing so but um there are stiff rules for unvaccinated players on the road they cannot enter internal venues other than the team hotel practice facility or game arena they are not allowed to use the hotel gym pool sauna steam room or other shared facilities they are not allowed to have teammates team staff or visitors in their hotel room the exception uh of fully vaccinated family so your even your family if they remain unvaccinated can't come into your hotel room on the road if they get their vaccines but you remain unvaccinated then it's okay they are not allowed to leave the hotel or uh to eat or purchase food or use the restaurants or
Starting point is 01:01:08 bars in or out of the hotel that are open to the public. Which is what the Capitals got dinged for last year. Is that what happened? I think so with the four Russian players. What was the... They did end up in each other's room, did they not? Yeah, they just... They broke protocol. That was it. Okay. Like it wasn't anything nefarious.
Starting point is 01:01:24 They broke protocol. They can't pick up food except where the restaurant provides curbside pickup or similar service that does not require entrance to the main restaurant. Like, you can't do anything. anything it really they could have released a two-word statement just get vaccinated yeah right
Starting point is 01:01:44 yeah well and and and then so and i have to be we'll get to a little bit more of this but any player who wishes to opt out of the 21 22 series season because they are unvaccinated or because they're fully vaccinated but can establish that an immediate family member with whom he shares a household is at is substantially at a high risk of severe illness by contracting COVID-19, can opt out by October 1st. The team in question will have 30 days to decide if the player's contract will be told, basically rolling it
Starting point is 01:02:11 over. So you actually, let's say it was Austin Matthews, his contract would then go another season. Or, if this season would be removed from the agreement, anyone opting out would not be able to play in another league or the Olympics. Okay, interesting. Any person whose
Starting point is 01:02:27 job, role, position, or access entails them to have personal interactions within 12 feet of hockey uh operations personnel including players must be fully vaccinated that means all arena staff all coaches all management everybody everybody's getting vaccinated fully vaccinated players are subject to pcr tests every 72 hours i believe those are the ones that provide results in 50 minutes or less uh and then they're and then i guess unvaccinated players would be tested every day every single so how long is the nhl season in days it's like 250 something like that so you get
Starting point is 01:03:03 a swab up your nose and tickle your brain for 250 straight days i mean i guess you've already done it to a point that's not fun though no it's not like what a waste of your time what a waste of what a waste of everybody's time every by the way if you're unvaccinated for no reason other than you think bill gates is after you you're vain enough to think bill gates gives a shit about you if that's if that's truly your reasoning then you should have to pay for all the tests as well that you accumulate i believe some places are doing that no no like the nhl should be like oh by the way you're paying for the test out of your salary yeah it's just i wish i had a truly passionate opinion on this i'm uh i'm exhausted i'm like mentally exhausted with i i love this oh i love
Starting point is 01:03:53 love it yeah i love it but the um expanding the conversation beyond that uh oh yeah i don't we've been fighting this fight for so goddamn long get the thing and a lot of people are now well and if i don't know there's like a new wave of vaccination i'm pretty sure alberta which dropped all masking in July has now reinstituted a mask mandate for everything and you can't be at a restaurant past 10pm their case has skyrocketed and
Starting point is 01:04:25 I think it's 95% of the people in the hospital and ICU who have it are unvaccinated and they're bribing people to get vaccinated with $100 oh they're doing the formula they have in the states it's a big issue in Alberta because there are a lot of people who did get vaccinated and they're like
Starting point is 01:04:41 reward me I did the right thing you're awarding assholes or lazy people or whatever who frankly the local government encouraged for years yes so wow that's shocking but hey at least i guess they're playing to their base um yeah they're literally handing hundred dollar bills to yeah long long story short when it came down to it if a person like yourself or myself had gone to a game and you get a severe case of covid and there are breakthrough cases we know that we knew that was going to happen with the vaccine.
Starting point is 01:05:13 So you are fully vaccinated and you get COVID and you can prove it was at a Leafs game or a Sens game or whatever game you want to be at and it was from
Starting point is 01:05:20 an unvaccinated person. That's a huge, huge legal problem. For MLSC. For and then the NHL. Because here's the thing. You're taking MLSC and you're taking
Starting point is 01:05:33 the NHL to court if they don't have these regulations in place. And I want to be very clear. There are subsets of people who cannot or... If you can't get it for health reasons yeah i get that yeah and there's there's issues with poorer communities
Starting point is 01:05:47 i understand all that certainly not talking about those people yeah if you can get the thing yeah we're talking about who are who are able to get it and in canada you aren't able to you are there are enough yes more than enough get it get it i'm gonna uh uh listen i'm gonna go to a leaf game And no one will notice you're missing They won't even care Get it or don't Guess who's going to know you're at that game though Who? Bill Gates
Starting point is 01:06:24 Damn, oh man It's like when somebody tells you they're going to unfollow you on Twitter It's like, I'll never notice I'm going to tweet at Bill Gates from my iPhone And that'll show him That'll show him I've chosen sides, Bill And Vista still sucks
Starting point is 01:06:40 yeah i'll never forgive you for that bill i had to use vista for so long the other thing i've chosen my microchip there are so many great podcasts out there i just hate how all of us are under one umbrella which is joe rogan under joe rogan what are you talking about because i wait what do you i think it was sarah civian was like when did joe rogan become the ombudsman for the world right that's not true i don't think nobody who listens to this is like oh you guys are just like the jre no i think the sdp and the jre two peas in a pod let's go no what i think you guys ever tried dmt there was something where some sort of like like funny headline that one of the joke accounts i
Starting point is 01:07:26 follow it was about covid and it was like something ridiculous like um so and so you know use this and it cured covid and it's one from all those like wacky news websites that like is all fake news yeah and the first comment under it was podcasters breathe heavily like as in like they're getting excited and it's it's true like the thing is is that like everybody's like yeah there's it's all this crazy information's coming from podcasts i'm like not not all podcasters like 100 bazillion of us like are you kidding me joe rogan is the representative of podcasting everywhere all of them that's like saying if somebody makes a song and they say something crazy then you're like oh all musicians yeah i know it's not i know an equivalent i know but
Starting point is 01:08:06 anyway like that's that's i love those rules because they they're so strict that we're going to reach a point where it's every nhl player is vaccinated yeah and that's that's the goal and good on uh betman and the pa and everybody who came up with those rules because it's gonna reach a point where we get 100 vaccination rate amongst nhl players and that's the goal and arena of staff and families and families yes because ultimately really you know that's what it's about it's about keeping uh kids and old people safe and it's about trying to make sure that the variants which inevitably will come there will be fifths and sixths and 36th and 40th waves of covid this is just life now it's not going away but it's to try to keep people as safe as possible as you do
Starting point is 01:08:50 with everything else that's why we wear seat belts trying to keep everybody as safe as possible this my exhaustion okay now let's get to the nwhl because they went through a big rebrand big deal the the premier hockey federation they're entering their seventh year and not only have they changed commissioners but they've changed names so obviously we know that uh danny rylan is out ty too many is in and ty uh said this about the nwhl rebrand to the premier hockey federation the league has come a long way since its inception in 2015 and we believe this is the right time and the right message as we strengthen our commitment to growing the game and inspiring youth it really mirrors what we are doing everything about us is new as we're heading into this new era
Starting point is 01:09:34 the decision to change names uh also provided the 16 federation with an opportunity to make a social statement by by removing gender from its title i think this is key so this is what ty had to say we felt it was time our players uh be defined for their talent and skill it's not that they're female it's not like uh they're female phenomenal they're just phenomenal uh and in the billing change they call themselves they have like a no labels no limits thing or no limits no yeah so no labels no limits is sort of the the tagline for them um now this does raise some questions because the head coach of the toronto six was on a panel i believe it was last year talking about how um i was a transphobic panel frankly it was a panel of of she's been on her show twice yes
Starting point is 01:10:24 100 but that's what happened yeah um digit murphy digit murphy so there's there's a i mean for us that was a shocker right i remember that time going what the hell because we didn't know and then all of a sudden she shows up on this board and she's now resigned from it but all the same you know i i don't i don't pretend to be an expert on those particular issues but I can tell you that that was an unpleasant and unwelcome surprise for us who pride ourselves on having people on who are inclusive. We don't have to agree on everything, but that's the sort of thing where that's sort of a non-starter for us. And it's good to see with this new rebrand that those don't reflect the values of the league. What she said doesn't reflect what the league truly believes.
Starting point is 01:11:09 Right. But Marissa Ngemi, who you have to follow, she made some really good points today. She's had an unbelievable year. What a run, eh? like she's been amazing but she's i'm gonna bring it up i don't think it's a run man i she's unreal uh well of course covers the kraken obviously it's not a run but you know what i'm talking yes i do yeah sorry um i don't want i don't want to trivialize um she said um had him scrolling scrolling she's had it 24 hours so one thought i have right now is if the professional hockey
Starting point is 01:11:38 federation is claiming this rebrand is them being inclusive they have to expect to be held to an even higher standard yes they can't back off when challenged uh when they are saying they're doing this for that reason you can't turn around and be surprised when people hold you accountable when you do something like this there's obviously been transparency issues and defensiveness before if that continues they have to expect pushback and i think that's a really interesting and very true point you know this is and and by the way i respect the fact that they are holding themselves to that standard but the problem with the nwhl when it existed in its current or in its form before was consistency you know we want to be as supporters we want to support women's hockey
Starting point is 01:12:23 right so that for us meant not going into the fray of who's saudi are pwhpa or nwhl how about we just support women's hockey it's not for us to figure out it is for them to figure out we just want to support right that's what that was always our viewpoint the problem was that the nwhl every year seem to be something different and have mixed messaging okay and so we wanted and now they're very literally something different yes and hopefully that's a good thing and i think it will be but consistency is going to be so important for this league wherever it goes right if whether it's the you know eventually it merges with the nhl and and the pwhpa and they form you know the actual league that everybody knows is going to happen eventually whatever it is um they need
Starting point is 01:13:12 consistent messaging and they need it now yeah i'm glad we're having this conversation instead of talking about the logo and everything because that was that was a big part of the conversation yesterday and it's it's whatever everyone gets caught up in the in the trivial stuff yeah i don't care i yeah i literally whatever i don't mean whatever you want it to be i'm not like i don't see the nwhl logo and go is that what's supposed to seem like to american is that what the no like i'm just i'm not passionate about it i don't are you passionate about the nhl crest no and you shouldn't be no no go to be weird go go league like rob low wearing the uh i don't care he was literally chris trager from parkston rec yeah yeah he actually was at a i think it was a i forget what
Starting point is 01:14:00 gaming was that but he had an mlb hat on the other day yeah because he's in on the bit now he gets it now he's awesome um that's funny but that's fine friend of the show harrison brown great tweet here i was extremely proud to play in the nwhl but when i was asked where i played hockey by strangers it would give me anxiety to state the full league name and essentially out myself right this is very important uh this is a very important move for non-binary or trans hockey players love the new digs phf so there you go you know that that that's already an important first step exciting to see let's see where it goes yeah they're gonna hold themselves accountable uh play good hockey great i'm in and they're on twitch and they're on twitch it's that simple
Starting point is 01:14:45 yeah it's it's it's great now they have to change this to simplify something on twitter they are still at nwhl so i'm assuming they're working with twitter to switch that up because yeah Yeah, something with verification. Yeah, you got to keep your handle. Yeah, you got to keep your badge, right? That's the thing. That's why I remember when, this is years ago, but I remember when I started my Twitter account.
Starting point is 01:15:08 Who was it? Somebody asked, a manager of mine said, you have to put your outlet's name in your Twitter handle. And I said, no. And they said, and I already had the Twitter account for a few years, right? and i remember that and i remember saying to this person no i don't and they said yes you do yeah no everybody has it like i think my mom is like maryland dennis ctv or something like that you
Starting point is 01:15:34 know and i was like no and season 12 yeah season 12 starts today we're on the dead show um and i remember thinking like no that's a terrible idea and then as soon as it got verified i was like yeah see if indicated because you switch that if you switch even a letter on that you lose your verification it's gone didn't like a year or two ago pierre lebrun loses verification yeah but he's pure lebrun so he's like i don't care but i don't think he was i remember he was at real esbn underscore lebrun yeah and then i think when he when he i forget where he moved where he switched it up but yeah he was unverified pierre lebrun jesse and i would like you to stop coughing i'm sorry please it's not that it's just a little bit allergies yeah is it yeah it is yeah i hope
Starting point is 01:16:18 Before we get into the press conference here One last thing One last thing Derek Jeter is going to the Hall of Fame Tomorrow I re-to-pect I did not know this I just wondered if you guys
Starting point is 01:16:35 Had any thoughts on re-to-pect As a brand name And if it should go Into the Hall of Fame for brand names It should That should be the hat No Yankees it should be a retu pect hat he goes into the hall of fame as the first player known for retu pect
Starting point is 01:16:55 that is what derek jeter should get okay all right listen he had an amazing career and it's the retu pect he deserves okay put some retu pect on his name and did you did you ever see derek jeter play play baseball yeah handful of times yeah do you remember anything like in person No, no. I saw him play at New Yankee Stadium. I never saw him at Old Yankees, but I saw him at New Yankee Stadium when the Yankees sucked. And he was still pretty good.
Starting point is 01:17:23 His last season, I got to see him. So I'm happy to say I saw Derek Jeter play. Widely regarded amongst baseball nerds as one of the most overrated players of all time. Yeah, so tell me about that. Why is he named that? For starting his defensive abilities. He's often in positions where he has to make spectacular play
Starting point is 01:17:42 because he is not a great shortstop you know it uh a better shortstop would be able to get to the ball earlier and not have to do would be out of position yeah so that that's the the main thing and playing for the yankees you you get the profile where your name is just in the news you know if he was on the um the arizona diamondbacks his name probably wouldn't be going in the hall of fame today if he doesn't have all wow the the numbers are definitely like the 3 000 hits and all that you know but who knows if he has the career that he has if he's not on the yankees okay so but you can't take it away from him because he did play for the yankees but i have a question defense is really where the people take away his legacy jesse's being dis retupeckful
Starting point is 01:18:27 i think he's a hall of famer for sure yeah yeah well i think so too i i remember um actually this is going to sound ridiculous in retrospect and shows how little i knew about baseball but But when the Jays were on their run in, like, 15, 16, one of the guys who provided a highlight every game, it seemed like, was Kevin Pillar. Yep. And Kevin Pillar did make some spectacular grabs. And I remember the MLB Network the next season rating the top 10 center
Starting point is 01:19:01 fielders, and they did every position, right? Because, you know, the MLB Network is kind of thin in the offseason. and going in it's you know so i remember i had it on in the studio and jesse i and polar polar didn't come in a tenth i'm like oh well wow it's higher than i would have thought he would have been top third right so top 10 9 8 7 6 i'm like is kevin polar like the number one center fielder in in baseball is that what they're saying because i like didn't know anything and then uh and then they get to the top and it's obviously not polar i'm like jesse they just did a whole list of the top center fielders in baseball and they didn't include kevin pilar and jesse looked at me and
Starting point is 01:19:36 he said if kevin pilar wasn't out of position so much maybe he wouldn't have to make such highlight reels uh uh jumping saves it's like a 150 meter dash to every ball yes kevin pilar is very good at diving and catching balls i wish he was better at getting to a ball and standing under it and making a routine pop fly catch if you only watched highlights you'd think he was the best player And that's where I was at, right? That was my BT, this podcast, your world this week. I wasn't watching baseball at that point, right? I wish Kevin Block had hit, too.
Starting point is 01:20:06 He wasn't a great hitter. Do you remember, I think it was the 2016 season, he had the highest home run in baseball by a wide margin. Yes. So they had the strike zone and where all the home runs were hit. And there were a few like, whoa, like outliers that were unusually high above the strike zone. And then there was Kevin Pillar. And it was, it was, dude, it was like at his shoulders.
Starting point is 01:20:35 Oh, you mean, you mean the ball he hit, not the height it went. No, no. The ball he hit. Like in the strike zone, he hit the highest pitch. And I watched it live and I was like, why is he swinging it? He just hit a home run. I can't, I can't believe it. It was like, it was like at his neck.
Starting point is 01:20:52 yeah there's in that situation you're like oh a better hitter doesn't swing at that ball yes like regardless of if you hit the home run you shouldn't have been swinging at that pitch it's it's it was it was a good thing that should have never happened right yes because he very often swings way too high but this one time i got it and he had the highest i I got to find it somewhere. It looks ridiculous. We were so in love with that team, I think, and I think every market can get this way,
Starting point is 01:21:25 where you're so in love with your team that you think every player at every position is unbelievable. I remember being like, wow, should I get a Chris Colabello jersey? You remember that? Everybody at the Rogers Center had Minimori Kawasaki jerseys, and Kawasaki was a bench player. It was just one of those special runs. He had funny interviews and walked it off once.
Starting point is 01:21:48 Yeah, he did walk it off. That's right. I don't think Kawasaki played in the major leagues after he was in with Toronto. I don't think. There was like a Cubs signing in there, I think, somewhere. But I don't know if he played. He was just probably, you know, they have 80 billion people on the roster. So you never know.
Starting point is 01:22:03 He's a non-roster. He wasn't a major league player, like a consistent everyday player. But we loved him. Yes. You know? Yes. And I just thought, I was thinking back to that now. And I'm like, it's, it.
Starting point is 01:22:15 I can't find it. it's so nice i'll i'll i'll send it to you afterwards it's it looks ridiculous i hope because we're nerds all of us here are nerds we're hockey nerds if you're watching the show if you're listening to the show you're a nerd and that's okay be the nerd embrace the nerd but the thing about being a nerd about something is it often robs you of your joy of it if i watch i look at star wars nerds and objectively the last two movies were not very good they just were not and star wars nerds because they're so contrarian will try to tell you the last shot it was good it just wasn't it just wasn't a good strong movie and but the the thing is is that
Starting point is 01:22:51 when you watch star wars like the reason people were so hard on the prequels that came out in the 90s is that they forgot that they're children's movies yes they're children's movies and i think sometimes when we watch sports as the nerdy element we forget that sports are children's entertainment they are and they have sometimes the thing about sports sometimes the thing about sports is they make you feel like a child because there is that magic element to them there is that oh my god this is really going to happen i mean think about how montreal canadians fans must feel right now like they're going to be all over me after this show after i said i don't think they're going to make the playoffs this year objectively i don't but they're going to say well we made it
Starting point is 01:23:32 to the cup finals yeah you did it's magic that was magic they're they're children's entertainment products for sure but adults have built so many things around sports that have made them much more complicated and passionate like gambling gatekeepers a lot of gatekeepers yeah and like think pieces and the media that covers it oh yeah they've created all this this giant complex around all of these entertainment products that are really for children it's like when space jam came out it's a child's movie it's a child's movie don't review it in rolling stone yeah what are you doing Oh, LeBron's acting is just not up to par. He's next to Bugs Bunny, man.
Starting point is 01:24:11 Right. You care. What does the seven-year-old think of the movie? Did they have a good time at the theater eating popcorn with sticky fingers? Was Michael Jordan at the Golden Globes? No. I don't know if he was. Did the original Space Jam rate well?
Starting point is 01:24:23 I don't think so. It's a classic because we watched it and there was magic. And that's what I hope, as nerdy and somewhat sometimes cynical people, I hope that we get to regain the love that I had for the 2015 Blue Jays where I actually thought Kevin Pillar was, like, an all-star. You know what I mean? He might have made an all-star team in there. Maybe.
Starting point is 01:24:48 It's fan voting. Yeah, it is. But, like, he went to San Francisco and did nothing. And, like, I think that's the thing that I wanted, like, I pulled away from that is, like, I was really in love with that team. And I wish and I hope for all of us who listen to it and there are fans of all 32 NHL teams here that listen to this show,
Starting point is 01:25:07 I hope that some of that magic still exists for you. I really do. I'll throw out a hockey player. Please do. A hockey, and I don't know if this is the greatest example, but Nikita Zdorov. That dude has terrible numbers. Terrible.
Starting point is 01:25:24 Terrible. But sometimes hockey man go boom. and he's it's really fun to watch hockey man go boom he's a big hitter every few games a hundred percent oh did he have a 30 percent coursey rating this game don't care because there was a highlight from the second period where he ruined a guy's day ruined a guy's day clean as a whistle and it ruled i gotta learn to watch hockey like i watch transformers okay because why there was a time during uh university or college some of you might call it um where because i was learning how to make media i was i would like hyper analyze everything
Starting point is 01:26:10 because i was a student man i was a student of of the art and i watched a movie i can't remember what it was it was some action movie and i was like this sucks this is actually a shitty movie like the plot like this doesn't make sense about and i don't remember who it was i who i spoke to it could have even been adam he was like just shut your brain off like what why are you expecting uh daniel day lewis to be in the next transformers movie just shut your brain off and watch it and enjoy the explosions and i went and watched a transformers movie and it ruled because i turned my brain on safe mode it was great see that's fun but i find more fun out of okay i watch that thing where i'm having no fun and i'm super analyzing it but they nail it like i like watching something
Starting point is 01:27:02 like okay that's good i watch the departed and that's fun i pay attention to every single scene i'm fast forwarding and rewinding and analyzing it and they and they fucking nail it that's more fun than turning my brain off it's a skill to be able to do both i think i liked it a part of yeah like it's a skill to be able to do both i just think i think i want you to give yourself the freedom to be irrational about sports and irrational about your team does that make sense yeah because that's what being a child is it's you're literally beating the irrational out of yourself as you grow up right i you're just a walking emotion when you're i see it with my two and a half year old she the other day like i told her i told her you can't have she wanted to
Starting point is 01:27:41 She wanted to cook. She hadn't even started dinner. I said, no. She put her head down on the table and cried. And I said, okay, you're going to cry. And then she, and this is amazing. She then, you know, got tired of doing that. So then she popped up because I have a little table and a little chair that she's able to
Starting point is 01:27:57 pull herself up into. So she pulled the chair out, got off the chair and then laid face down on the ground and started crying. And so that was going to get me to buckle on the cookies before dinner. So I got to level it up. Right. And that's what – that irrationality is also what creates the insane, intense magic that makes you nostalgic about things. And I just hope we don't lose that.
Starting point is 01:28:17 And I understand what you're saying too, Jesse. Because when they do nail it, it's amazing too. I'm very excited hopefully over the next five to ten years that we still get through this podcast because you guys both have children right now. 20 years. 20 years, 50 years, whoever knows. We'll be 70 sitting here talking about the least first-round pick who didn't score goals in the playoffs. I think they might do it this year. It could happen.
Starting point is 01:28:41 I got to tell you, my back feels as good as it did in my 40s. How to show at the Legion, baby. You know, I watched... No, no. Let him finish. Let me make my point. So the story that Steve has. All right.
Starting point is 01:28:56 Sorry. Sorry to interrupt the JDP. So you guys have children right now. So I'm excited to hear how your perspectives on these things will change through the eyes of your kids. Like, you're going to watch your kid play sports, watch sports, enjoy these different products. And you're going to be like, oh, that was their reaction to it. I'm excited to hear how that's going to change your opinion on this.
Starting point is 01:29:19 Because, like, okay, maybe your daughter just loves Auston Matthews. She doesn't care that. She has a Mitch Marner jersey right now. There you go. Leo will love Mitch Marner. Yeah. Who doesn't? I'm positive.
Starting point is 01:29:30 And that's your kid's favorite player. And they can do no wrong. And I'm excited to see how that changes your perspective on everything around your opinion on these teams. Yeah. I'll give you an example. Doug Gilmore is my favorite Leaf of all time. Doug Gilmore asked for a trade out of Toronto. Did he?
Starting point is 01:29:47 Yeah. People are pissed about Mats not wanting a trade out of Toronto. They're pissed at Mats because he refused one. Doug asked for one, and he's lionized. Now, the team sucked, and they were rebuilding, and he didn't want to be a part of a rebuild. That's why he asked. And guess what? When we tried to trade Matt, the team sucked.
Starting point is 01:30:06 We were about to rebuild, and he kind of screwed them out of some assets. Maybe. But it was his contractual right to do it. Kids don't care. Well, adults don't care. The thing with adults, here's the adults thing. Hey, let me tell you this. Okay, so let me – I went – let's say tomorrow I come in,
Starting point is 01:30:22 or Thursday when we do our next show, and I come in and I say, guys, the Leafs just traded a player who scored 76 points last year. 76 points last year you guys would be like oh well what'd they get 56 games they got they got a player in return who had 85 points last year well it's not bad the player who has 85 points is also seven years younger whoa are you upset about that no well leaf fans were when matt sundin and wendell clark swapped spots oh yeah objectively they got the better player in the deal and a centerman but that's wendell but that's wendell who the hell is that guy you don't trade wendell right that's the irrationality of sports that i hope always continues because that is
Starting point is 01:31:09 because first off matt's is amazing and we love matt's but that was at the time was how can you trade wendell so i was really young for the heyday of wendell is a leaf like to the point where i barely remember it i was a little kid i told someone who was in their early 40s that wendell clark thing from a couple shows ago where we did a top leafs team of all time and he did not make the top 12 forwards of our of our list and you the look on his face the look the indignation because that that guy was running the show for the leafs for over half a decade when he was like entering high school or like uh you know exiting elementary school that was his like childhood idol but like remembering all of it and we said he wasn't even that good well and and the thing was
Starting point is 01:32:03 outraged he was he he made me go maybe we're wrong all right i mean i think wendell was a heart and soul guy and i think if you look at his numbers there's more that he brought but i also have to say that the Leafs were dead there was nothing here and they had one guy who would beat the brakes off you and score some goals one guy and that was Wendell Clark and they had him for six or seven years before Doug Gilmore and all the other guys and and Felix Poppin and all those other guys showed up so for okay we need you to score all our goals we need you to beat everyone up oh uh what what position do you play defense nah now you're gonna be forward forward now and he did all of that yeah so in that regard you can understand why people from that era hold him in
Starting point is 01:32:47 such a high regard because the bar was so low it's terrible he he was the catalyst though for he everyone remembers like uh we always we always talk about it david price and troy tulowitzki but what about the guys who were there the guys who were already there right like who would you say started the culture shift for the blue jays for that 2015 team i would say batista when he hit 50 like is it donaldson who came in and riled the team up no no like it was it was and then and then they traded alex gonzalez for edwin incarnacion was that the trade it was not the not the alex gonzalez from the 90s early 2000s alex it was another alex gonzalez who had there's a lot of alex gonzalez who had 30 home runs he was pretty
Starting point is 01:33:38 good yeah they traded him to the brain yeah edwin was a great player at the time so yeah it was a good swap but um yeah i would say it's those two guys really that created that culture and i remember edwin's nickname was e6 because he was a shitty defensive player is that what people called him i don't remember that yeah because he was brutal defensively yeah it was ah trade this guy get rid of him he stinks you know we're all like now we're all doing yeah um before we get to the press conference and we will do a show so in conclusion uh derrick jeter is not a great defensive player uh it's overrated his hitting resume is stands for itself 3 000 hits gets you in the hall of fame but he probably wouldn't go into the hall of fame with so much fanfare
Starting point is 01:34:19 if he wasn't derrick jeter yeah okay all right that's where the conversation started don't ever lose that magic, that irrational New York Yankees magic. I want to quickly do an announcement. Our good friend Chris Johnston. I'm thrilled to announce that I'm joining a new venture that will see my writing appear on the Toronto Star and other apps more on what's next. So congratulations
Starting point is 01:34:39 CJ. What? Leaving Sportsnet. What? And going to the Toronto Star. So good for you CJ. Yeah, good for him man. I hope that he remains on Hockey Night in Canada though because that's still possible I would think. I don't know. I don't know either. I'm looking at you as though you're Bart Yabsley but
Starting point is 01:34:54 But we get confused for each other. The name that shall never be spoken. He should not be named. He should not be named. I almost said it. Don't say it. Don't. Don't you dare say it.
Starting point is 01:35:04 Don't say that. But congratulations to Chris. We're very, very happy for him. Literally, he was tweeted four minutes ago, so I figured I'd bring it up. Oh, okay. Also, we should give him the honors of being the first guest to sit at the fourth mic next to you. He will be. He will be.
Starting point is 01:35:18 First guest. Nobody else. Nobody until Chris. And when Chris is ready, he will come in. And we were going to go through the... I know we've got to go through the Olympic rosters with him, and then we'll do some Leafs talk and all that sort of stuff. But that'll be in the next couple weeks, so be on the lookout for that.
Starting point is 01:35:31 There will also be some other guests that we have coming up that we're working on right now, but we can't announce any names. Don't wink at me. I'm particularly excited about one of them. Adam, wink into the camera. Don't do that. Stop that. Stop that. Stop that right now. Stop that. I don't like that.
Starting point is 01:35:47 Let's do the press conference. Let's press against the press conference. Starting point is 01:36:49 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. The Presser SDP. The Steve Dangle Press Conference. You talked over it. That's twice. That's twice you've done that. Stupid, stupid, stupid idiot. It's a good thing we've got a well-ventilated studio
Starting point is 01:37:04 because it was getting hot in here. All right, so questions from Discord. By the way, if you haven't joined our Discord, community do so it's over 3 500 people have joined so far and over 3 000 signed up in 48 hours miss nothing ever again it's uh it's actually amazing and you know the moderators shout out to them because they're doing such a great job it is a zone where you're not gonna get reddited like it's the conversation's actually nice people are good to each other you know the dangled navy community for the most part's pretty cool so this is this is just a great
Starting point is 01:37:37 achievement and shout out to them and shout out to jesse who was a part of that as well yeah it's okay there's only like over 100 topics in the discord so yeah it's a lot yeah you probably won't find something for you go ahead jesse i'm trying to i'm trying to find the most uh emoted uh question yeah how do you how do you search that i would like to know so i'm just scrolling through literally eyeballs so this one's from felix i don't know if we want to get into it but this is the one that has the most thumbs up 18 of them for steve what was the wedding song that you and mrs dangle went with oh i like that do you believe in the power of love songs and are you a sucker for them and then there's one for adam and one for myself what a great question
Starting point is 01:38:19 i was looking for hockey question who cares i want to know that answer uh it was um your song but the yeah it was the Ellie Goulding version not the Elton it's an Elton John song and it was funny because we picked that song
Starting point is 01:38:41 you know with care right and my wife loves Ellie Goulding but we picked that with care because we wanted it to be important and about two months before our wedding it was used in a peanut butter commercial
Starting point is 01:38:56 that's funny we kept it but um yeah for leo's was it leo's first birthday no it was her first mother's day um i made a video compilation of leo to that song and we all cried a lot so that was our wedding so do you want to answer a strange question the other two and then there's adam there's one well no hold on he didn't answer if he believes in the do you believe Given the power of love songs and are you a sucker for them? Of course. Of course I do. What's your favorite love song?
Starting point is 01:39:30 Oh, man. Oh, Jesus. That's difficult. I mean, I guess I would go with that one. It's not necessarily like a song that would make me fall in love with someone, right? But I'm talking... It's a song. No, we're talking about songs that celebrate your love for someone.
Starting point is 01:39:51 No song makes you fall in love with someone. um there are songs that can make you attracted to people you know you shouldn't necessarily be attracted to whoa but like what's very funny pony when you first heard pony whoever the person your mother yeah the person next to you was like wow i think that person's attracted how many drinks do you have in you when you hear that oh man pony not now uh but i remember like no now you're old not well because pony's like adam would be smashed like one and a half yeah pony was also like it was a long time ago and it's overdone right doesn't have the same no i'm talking about like at the peak like you're at a club and oh god it's it's not a retro night and pony comes i know because
Starting point is 01:40:30 that's what it is now and now it's yeah that's an oldies three vodka sodas in that's it yeah i was always a light you know me i was never a big drinker like well i was a big drinker but then i wasn't decidedly was not a big drinker after about 19 um no i i believe in the power of love songs yes to name a specific one that's difficult but i i just i tie a lot of emotions to songs that's why um like i'm really picky with my like spotify playlist and everything like i can't i can almost never let it just pick or like go through the top songs and the whatever because if it's really run of the mill like they rhyme all the same words as every other love song i get bored of it um or like if the words piss me off if it's a great song but i get annoyed by
Starting point is 01:41:20 a lyric not even i'm offended by it i'm just annoyed by it in some way it ruins the whole song for me so it's it's emotional so i love love songs some love songs most of them are not great but no nothing will ever compare to the feelings that i felt at the grade seven or great i was maybe grade five grade six at this point but there was in our neighborhood there was a grade fives through eight dance at the community center did you ever go to that i did oh i don't think it was grade five yeah it's grade five through eight oh wow yeah so five six seven eight i didn't go until grade six and it was well it's because you're catholic um catholic school didn't tell you you're sitting next to two catholic boys why i'm kidding i'm kidding but i remember adam's the
Starting point is 01:42:03 only one here who's not baptized you would yes i will be going to hell according to you uh but i Yeah, I thought you knew that I remember Like again, we talk about being a kid And being just a big walking bag of emotion Casey and Jojo, All My Life Do you remember what that song used to do to people? I thought you were going to say Crazy
Starting point is 01:42:24 Which one? Crazy, crazy, crazy Oh, that's a big song I thought that was the bigger one Then there was NSYNC, This I Promise You Yes, that was large and in charge Backstreet Boys, I think had a couple That were like huge
Starting point is 01:42:38 that none of the guys admitted to liking. What was that song by Genuine? Other Than Pony? Other Than Pony. My whole life has changed. Oh. Since you came in. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:42:50 All right, hold on. I'll look it up. I'll look it up. Genuine. My whole... Okay, hang on, hang on, hang on. Changed? Is that what it is?
Starting point is 01:42:58 It's called Differences. Differences. Yeah. Yes. That was a big one. Yeah, these are great. Jesse, what about you? Give me a love sign.
Starting point is 01:43:07 there's uh there's questions here for uh give me a love song jesse no i'm gonna get to it okay there's other questions here that'll allow me to answer that i thought you were trying to sneak no no no i will answer it so adam do you want to answer your question what is my question this was also from felix there's a three-parter one for each of us okay uh so it says for adam is there a song that you will now refuse to listen to following your separation wow personal you know what no um i actually i had to debate that in my own head though because there's certain songs that i loved that my ex also loved but i thought would why would we get in the way of each other liking these songs you know what i mean like i just so no absolutely not um there's some really great
Starting point is 01:43:48 music that i still listen to that don't the only difference is you don't think about that person when you hear that song anymore that's done right you don't i don't think i think there's probably some people that hold on to that i kind of just dropped it and i think that speaks to how we've Managed this because it's a tricky situation. Nobody. Nobody thinks a divorce is easy. But the I think you kind of just go once you've accepted it you go, okay Well, but I still like that song, you know, but it's still a great song. I liked it for a reason Didn't I sometimes you need a little moratorium on that song? Me and that me and that song are gonna break up. We're gonna well for six months separation though
Starting point is 01:44:23 And then we'll get back together. Yeah I have reunited with a few songs that I loved good just different meaning now you should uh and then the final question it said for jesse do you have a song that you share with your significant other or that you'd love to share with a significant other so uh if you share this song with anybody other than gabby i'm gonna i'm gonna be a fly on the wall when you get home um i don't i don't think we have really any songs together my girlfriend and i but like one a a couple all-time favorites that i'd throw like at the top of the list if it was like our wedding song or anything like that songbird uh by fleetwood mac off of rumors really yeah it's a
Starting point is 01:45:03 great song probably other a couple other songs on there as well even though that's like a heartbreak album uh and then but that's a kristen mcvee song so that's right it's beautiful she had already gone through a divorce and was falling in love with somebody else and her ex-husband's in the band by the way and so she was writing all these love songs while stevie nicks and lindsey buckingham were like we're breaking up and this is terrible so it's like this it's one of the the only love songs on the album yeah and then like you make it love and fun i think is the other one yeah also also great um there's a documentary on the making of rumors that you can just watch for free on youtube because no one's taken it down yet so yeah it's like it
Starting point is 01:45:38 should be on vhs somewhere but it's on youtube yeah that's awesome and then um i don't know another one um i have thought of another one well go ahead if you need time go ahead yeah yeah let mean i was trying to pull up something so the first song we ever bonded over was um remember the arctic monkeys first album how huge it was oh man uh dancing shoes great song yeah it was my my favorite song on the album i don't know if it still is like but at the time it really was and i i i we were just talking about that album and i just go what's your favorite song and she said dancing shoes and i was like all right that's the one that's the one we're together forever now forget and then we were watching ted lasso that's a very sexual song by the way
Starting point is 01:46:24 dancing shoes yeah oh yeah you guys better be grinding that's that that song is like written about the moments before you hook up with somebody at a club oh i know like no i'm very sexual oh yeah it must have been a charged atmosphere between you and mrs dangle yeah on facebook messenger or whatever that was pre-messenger man you guys are long you wouldn't wait what we were doing no oh seven oh the beginning of oh seven wow that's so when jet when steve and i signed up for facebook we're old enough that only university kids could be on it oh wow so when we signed up you guys were in the social network we were in the social network yeah it had expanded to ryerson university i'll never forget it it was like oh we got facebook wow that movie for the
Starting point is 01:47:02 six months you were there yeah that's right that movie is a time capsule and i'll be oh my god there's so much stuff uh thinking about explaining it to leo one day is making me feel so old oh and facebook is one of them yeah yeah please not gonna be on facebook other song i'll throw out there i just checked my phone uh i would die for you uh by prince off of purple rain that's a beautiful song yeah or even like purple rain do that as well those are my songs okay all right good we're gonna end it on this not love related what is the most sonically like what song blew your mind sonically and it doesn't have to be now but like the like the most like you brought Prince there there's a song with Prince that like when I heard it for the first time I remember
Starting point is 01:47:47 knowing not knowing what to do with my hands like not to do like with myself like it was just so completely and that's when doves cry when I heard that for the first time I'm like I have never heard anything like this the song was already 25 years old but when I heard when I heard that when I was like 16 17 I was like that is insane what is that and I listened again and again and again what was the song that like absolutely rocked you that you're like I think my music taste has changed So when when the weekend was coming out in 2012, 11, I want to say because he was on a couple of blogs with two songs. I think it was Wicked Games and I want to say Loft Music and then House of Balloons dropped in like the middle of the night in that year. And there's a couple of songs on there that are like really genre blending and create a whole new subset of R&B.
Starting point is 01:48:39 and i remember hearing that for the first time at i don't like uh probably 19 at the time 1920 and like especially uh the title track house of balloons slash glass table girls like that song in the middle of that album that blew me away just for just because i'd never heard anything at the time like what what they were that little exo crew was doing so that's probably at the top of my list okay for songs in the last like 20 years that i've done that for me uh my answer sucks like i i when i was okay your answer is it's not about judgment here we're talking about subjective taste i don't think it was a specific song i just remember when i was like a pretty little kid like under 10 my dad was like because he was super into music and still is like he can
Starting point is 01:49:21 just he can sit in a chair and just listen to an album yeah living room without having to watch anything which i always thought that's very much our parents generation it's like you know you go or like fm radio stations you would they would play the album both sides of it front to back yeah and that is the entertainment you sitting there you sit and listen yeah every sunday was psychedelic sunday yes andy frost and it's and then we met him at one of our shows which was just no derringer was out of one of our shows not andy i don't think andy oh yeah you're right yeah one of andy's kids i think was drafted though which is pretty cool uh morgan yeah morgan frost right i sorry i listened to them both a lot in the car because so got them confused
Starting point is 01:50:02 but when i was a really little kid i my dad was super into music and i was just like where do i start and my dad for some reason was like i don't know the beatles and it was pretty mind-blowing to start with the beatles all right the beatles the first when you're kidding you hear them for the first time you could you get it right you understand why it's it was such a i got it and you compare it to what was coming out at the time oh my god it's crazy now people listen to bills now they oh they suck and who you know when paul mccartney was on with rihanna and kanye on four or five seconds and people were like who's paul mccartney you know like that's what happens right but but it at the time contextually people will say the same about drake who the fuck is drake
Starting point is 01:50:41 years from now um it's what happens and another song so you're asking for a song that like brought out a memory in me so okay again remember being like well steve you're catholic so you weren't allowed to the dance so you can imagine the reaction of the entire community center we were in when what's your fantasy by ludicrous oh you guys you guys like ludicrous a little too much yo ludicrous is amazing that was just your formative year over radio because of that yes and like jesse imagine the concept of having hoes in different area codes oh like the first time i heard that song i was like wow you could have he probably dates somebody in every city he goes to I don't know if Ludacris cracked my top 20 rappers of all time.
Starting point is 01:51:27 I hated the success of that song because it wasn't one of his better ones. No. No, it's not. But. But. Saturdays was a good one. Jesse, he had a great time. I know, I was there.
Starting point is 01:51:42 He had a run. I know. What were you? I'm starting to think you weren't. He had a run where he was gone. Man, people say. Ludacris makes you old now? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:51:52 Oh, yeah. This is terrible. You walk into anywhere and you say you like Nelly? A lot of people. People who like hip-hop will hate you for that. And then second. Country Grammar is a great album. I don't care.
Starting point is 01:52:04 Country Grammar is great. Yeah, it is. It really is. It's the one that followed up with the. Nellyville, piece of shit. No, Nellyville had like Dilemma. Yeah, which was a giant pop hit. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:52:17 What else? But that's all he was trying to do. Nellyville was a pop rapper. Yeah, but I bought Nellieville thinking it was Country Grammar. And it was nothing. Yeah, he went away from that. Wasn't Air Force One on Nellieville? That was on Nellieville.
Starting point is 01:52:29 Another piece of shit. And he went super commercial. He had like four big hit singles from that one album. That's all he was trying to do at the time. So I think that was a great album for the purpose. That was another. That was his run. Dude, we're still playing that song.
Starting point is 01:52:45 Easily his biggest album, but damn it. Damn it, does it suck. I know, I know, I know. So listen, we'll wrap it up here. We will be back Thursday. And like I said, tell your friends, if they can't find the podcast, let us know. We'll refresh it on Google and on Apple.
Starting point is 01:53:00 We're posting it everywhere. We're releasing Tuesdays and Thursdays until the start of the season when we go back to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. In Toronto. In Toronto. You didn't tell me to hit the- Oh, hit the extra.
Starting point is 01:53:13 Okay. Steve, is there anything you would like to do? I want to be able to stack all of these. I noticed you're trying that. and keep them up for the whole show. Can I do it all before the end of the thing? Uh, uh, I have two more left. It's the fifth coffee, Chris.
Starting point is 01:53:30 You can't get it up. Oh, there you go. One, two, six. Oh, he knocked over his own tower. Too bad. The Steve Dangle Podcast. Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle, at Adam W-Y-L-D-E,
