Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Taskers across Canada book up fast, especially for same-day tasks. Get $15 off your first task right now with the promo code Dangle at TaskRabbit.ca or the TaskRabbit app. You should
Starting point is 00:01:10 download that. TaskRabbit.ca. Code Dangle. Okay. Horse at Clubhouse this weekend. Friday you can buy tickets link is in the description Steve will come to your house if you do not come to the course in clubhouse that also means there's going to be a scheduling change for the SDP this week you're going to get it Monday Wednesday Thursday and then you'll hear the course in clubhouse Friday show on like Saturday afternoon Steve forgot uh so you're telling him again for the first time Jesse oh yeah Steve show up for the show Thursday thursday maddie didn't even know oh my goodness people check your emails please i actually i did know that because i checked my email today something else everybody email checker don't
Starting point is 00:02:06 make me tell you again course in clubhouse you know so much fun you know better than the uh description to get tickets yeah and we're so excited to try some triple bogey while we are there now let's start with this uh jesse was at training camp over the weekend with the leafs um and just like the rest of us austin matthews is done with your shit in two weeks it's he's sassy he is i enjoy his brand of sass i like his personality yes um and it's not just because he's ours but because he just seems like a cool guy and he had to be the adult in the room and say finally okay enough uh but only for like two more weeks right yeah and that's two more weeks we'll play it and then I want to talk about when this happened you have a habit of uh pre-game
Starting point is 00:02:52 staying out as late as possible you and Mitch always did yeah have you thought about how that will change like are you gonna ask someone to stay out with you or you can change things up this year uh I mean see what happens I guess yeah you got two more weeks and then we're done with these with these questions. Kevin McGrann! Man, Kevin McGrann, he's so evil. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:03:21 I do, listen, you might listen to that Kevin McGrann question and go, that's a little in the weeds, Kev. Like, most people don't go to the games. Mostly fans are never at a game.
Starting point is 00:03:31 It's training camp. And so you would never know that Austin and Mitch stay out late because you don't usually televise that unless it's an amazon broadcast which they do really well and i and i find it funny that kevin would ask that but we know kevin's coming out with a matthews book yes uh and so kevin is like deep into austin matthews lore and i can see that's probably why he asked that question
Starting point is 00:03:53 this is also the time to ask those questions like training camp is so long and there's so much time and the player is always talking there's nothing to go back on in terms of like the actual game that happen yeah this is the time you ask things like that and like i stand around there i don't really ask a lot of questions i just kind of listen to the guys ask questions and then do everything there and this is the time they're asking like mark masters it was jt's birthday on was that saturday and he's like so do you have a piece of cake for your birthday and then like that's the thing that's funny there's a personality things you're getting out of training get you anything for your birthday john and john and john obviously like no it's
Starting point is 00:04:30 trying to get time oh yeah it's just time with my kids so it's not a cheat day yeah like steve if you want to answer it like jt i'd appreciate your impression yes you know if i got three kids so if you want to give me a birthday present you can give me a nap like if it's if it's game 70 and the leafs are fighting for their lives in a playoff spot you don't have the opportunity to ask a player if he had cake you know what like this is when you get the hey what's your pre-game warm-up routine gonna be we're we're using we're using this press credential thing all wrong you know instead of requesting like an interview or something because we've never had an active leaf on this show ever on this show on this show on agent
Starting point is 00:05:12 provocateur we did one active leaf ever on the network and that was will lagason yeah and that's a noted alan walsh client now in detroit god bless him we've had x leaves we had lindros we had sundine yeah we've had x but never current instead of asking like putting in a request for currently. What we should put in a request for is... Frank Corrado, how dare you? John Tavares talks to John Tavares, where Steve is John Tavares, and then they talk to each other like Jimmy Fallon and Mick Jagger in that mirror.
Starting point is 00:05:37 You know what I mean? I don't know if he would like that. You don't think he'd find that funny? No. Come on! I don't know if John would play around with that. Steve, quit fooling around. I'd say this conversation really takes the cake.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Sorry, just joshing. If you would think that would be a tremendous waste of his time yes it would be it would be this is like he's not getting out of that it'd be the dullest video ever and i think that's what would make it great oh it would be so boring it would be terrible and and and he probably wouldn't know what to do like he he's not i don't i don't feel like john uh john tavaris is a yes and person you know what i mean uh but but i still think you know what be 60 seconds i'd watch no famously i i taught i spoke to him when he was in junior so he's i think i don't know 18 and i'm 20 or something like that and or 17 and 20 and i brought
Starting point is 00:06:37 my marantz this old giant box when i was an intern at the fan and he was playing with the gens and after the game i i was shitty at interviews so i started with uh so how are you like i was just talking to him like a person yeah and he just starts talking about the game well you know uh you know we blah blah blah and did the hockey answer and i go oh shit and i should probably be recording bravo john i didn't yeah he was trained man he was trained he was trained from a very young age he is no nonsense jesse what are you looking up are you looking up something no no okay i was i'm like do i need to go do i need to throw you but i do want to come to you on this okay you were training camp on saturday yes um and we're going to hold the domey stuff
Starting point is 00:07:18 for just a second but i want to ask you because you were there um and you've been there and you've been going uh the you finally saw a blue and white scrimmage yeah how was that it was team blue versus team white and the first couple days like day one is craig ruby is gonna run everybody's legs into the ground and he did that and everybody was tired day two it's like oh okay we're doing more skills work and everything and then we get to saturday and the weekend and we're a couple days in and they're like okay we get to actually play hockey which is awesome so you get to see the competition amongst the lower ends of the lineup in an actual hockey environment it's different from when they're shooting pucks at the net or like going head-to-head and battle drills or
Starting point is 00:07:56 whatever and you get to see all that it's great because you can actually evaluate the talent when they're doing a hockey game sure it was awesome and in that game i don't know if this is jumping ahead but like that game the star of it was nick robertson yes he's the one whose motor is going at a hundred percent and you can tell some guys are at 80 some guys are at 90 but he's done this two years in a row yeah he's the he's the guy who's coming into training camp ready and in every single instance where he gets to prove his talent he's going to try and do that and now it's a question of again does this translate to regular season hockey because we know each and every time and every year he can do this in the preseason now it's like okay you got to show us again if
Starting point is 00:08:37 it can translate you can have a bad camp or you could have a bad preseason and he has chosen the opposite which i like it's better to have a good one i guess but yeah like you said the last two years doesn't matter unless you do it when it counts he's basically walked into like we don't see where you fit and he he wedged himself in last year he's going to have to do the same this year um like some of the projections i'm seeing i'm like nick robertson on the fourth line what is the purpose of the fourth line i i don't think there's much point but i could see it how it might work unless they like here's the thing the thing with him is not that he can we know he can score that's great we know he can give you bottom six scoring which is what they need and i think he
Starting point is 00:09:18 was their top goal getter uh in the bottom six like by a wide margin actually no scoring yeah And I would expect Waugh, I would expect Lawton, I would expect those guys to get 30, 40 points, maybe 12 to 15 goals, right? Respectfully, that's kind of their career averages. Something like that. Robertson, if he can find a way not to get hemmed in on whatever line he's in, now it's a little unfair
Starting point is 00:09:42 because he was playing with Domi and McMahon, two other guys who respectfully need them not to get hemmed in too. But they feasted on like Buffalo. Oh, they killed him. but with nick i'm like hey man if you can find a way to not get hemmed in on that wing where the defenseman when he gets you the puck he feels confident that the puck is leaving the zone that you're gonna make a play or that you're physically able to push through a bigger defenseman like imagine a nick robertson you mentioned buffalo against rasmus stalling
Starting point is 00:10:11 right right like that's a big size difference what are you going to do about that he's never going to get dolly well no you're right you're not that's not an ideal scenario no so like i I was watching him yesterday, and I'm like, would it be insane to put him in the top six just to see? Just give him like three games in a row. Whom? Robertson. No, I know, but whom?
Starting point is 00:10:35 With whomst? Well, if. Because here's the thing. You got Matty as the finisher on the first line. Nylander's the finisher on the second line. Yeah. And who's driving? I've had the same conversation.
Starting point is 00:10:48 It'd be awkward if Robertson's out there taking shots away from Austin Matthews or William Neylander. Which he should never be doing ever, ever, ever. I understand. And Domi now appears to be slotted on the third, I noticed. I'm sure that's temporary. I just said hold on, Domi. Okay, my bad, my bad, my bad.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Listen, Robertson has enough of a motor, and he developed a little bit of jerk. Mm-hmm. ah let me see just let me see lorenz lotten okay fine let me see like it's less important to have the big heavy bang and crash fourth line in october it's less important when your third line is now freaking deezed like that they're big they're big right he's earned it or earning it he is in the process of earning it and there's also injuries injuries happen as we saw with domey at the beginning of camp now jesse yes uh what else do you have from camp on saturday that you'd like
Starting point is 00:11:55 to expand upon yeah the uh the the nick robertson thing was interesting and he scored the only two goals in the scrimmage he was up the the blue team i think he was on they won two nothing he scored on a goalie and then he scored the empty netter so that was fun to see him get those goals and then the other thing is coming out of camp um sim it just looks unbelievable in any time landon sim baby and just whenever he's on the ice he wants to punch somebody in the face like he has no regard for playing the game of hockey he just wants to beat people up which is an interesting dynamic i don't think the leafs have had uh out of a prospect this he got into it with brady kachuk at all times he just wants to get into it he was doing it again and when he
Starting point is 00:12:37 training camp on saturday um i thought that was just it's so much fun to watch him uh dakota joshua is so big he's a he's a big presence out there um on on the ice and you can see him in the scrimmage he's he's always going to the net which i think is a great thing they'll have in their bottom six i'm i'm very high on him going into this season okay i yes the again we said this last show leafs have made a lot of bets on guys who had down seasons he's such a reasonable bet i don't know i i'd be curious what what the conversation will be like if these bets don't work out because i'm sitting here looking at it going yeah no that's reasonable like matthias michelli yeah sure maybe like i don't know about immediately throwing them into the top six but
Starting point is 00:13:29 okay yeah maybe to go to joshua maybe joshua is a very reasonable bet yeah and i think like there's somebody who if you're looking for a a player who can have a really high ceiling and excel beyond his contract and what the expectations are even in a in a bottom six role like that's the guy who's gonna i love him here i love him i'm so glad he's here i am except for the fact that he ran over stallers uh at the end of the week last week and i was please don't do that to him hey so please don't do that to him kota geez the injuries were also interesting yeah so benny's out yeah and nick waugh miss so it was benny wasn't there um with an upper body injury uh nick waugh who could prove he called roy a couple times when you're
Starting point is 00:14:13 talking to him like roy roy so that was funny and then joseph wall had an illness so i didn't see when uh ben waugh or waugh got dinged up on earlier in training camp but i think that's a little interesting that could be just like hey it's listen we don't need you to be sure wasn't wall already back on the ice yeah uh yesterday yeah yeah and most of the team didn't make the trip to ottawa right it was a road trip for they sally yarn croak david confidence that most of like group three yeah yeah this is the right turver went and then got scratched yeah like poor guy poor guy dude it's it's um like the gentleman's agreement that they had last year basically the home team plays their nhl group and that's the leafs are going to return the favor
Starting point is 00:14:56 next game but i i love this setup actually because you get to see guys who are straight up not trying at all but they're able to do so much with just pure raw talent trying like 20 versus the guys who aren't nearly as talented but are trying their bag off it's it's always just a fun oh yeah i don't know it's a fun matchup if you're a sicko now uh we uh we got to see the leafs in action i know steve you've got a lot to say about that but hold on to that because i'm gonna get to the domey stuff now where you almost took us oh because i think it's a natural fit now uh uh darren drager said this um they they want matias michelli the leafs want matias michelli to prove himself but to also feel comfortable in the new organization before putting him in a position where it's a lot of
Starting point is 00:15:53 pressure and you look at where they have him slotted and yes they have uh michelli slotted higher right now than domi but that's because domi's just getting into camp he's not we're expecting that max domi starts on austin matthews right wing unless he's injured and so what's interesting is they believe that michelle's got a much higher ceiling they don't think they've seen everything to his game uh and according to dregs with domi there's already proven chemistry with austin matthews which we've been saying of course um consistency remains the question berube clearly values domi's game and they know uh it can't just be about matthews kneelander Tavares and Nyes quote they need contributions from other places including the bottom six if
Starting point is 00:16:35 Domi secures that top line spot with Matthews and Nyes uh his game should take off and that'll mean good things for the Maple Leafs and it will considering he has only paid three and a half million bucks or less I forget what it is but it's somewhere in that range yeah um especially you know with the cap going up and whatever that contract if he returns to form will be a great a great bargain for them so when we see him on the ice currently in the lineups that's not where it's going to be at the start of the year and i'm just curious guys and jesse i don't know if you've had any insight on this with domi um has berube expanded on that on what the first line makeup is going to be what their expectation is of what kind of role he would play because we know he can
Starting point is 00:17:20 be a few different types of player yeah uh and unfortunately some some nights you don't know which one you're getting yeah it's his spot to lose okay the understanding going into training him and still is despite on sunday them playing him lower and michelle having that spot michelle will have to do so much better than domi over the next two weeks to take that spot from him because domi's most successful tenure as a maple leaf was the time he played with austin matthews and they're trying to recreate that because there's an opportunity there and he fits perfectly on that line if he is maximum max domey right that's his skill set lends perfectly to austin's and nice can do what nice it always does nice who's by the way has looked amazing in training
Starting point is 00:18:01 camp like he seems like he's already going at a thousand percent but like domey's gotta lose this spot for the next two weeks and i don't know if he's gonna do that he seems like a guy who comes into training camp ready despite like the injury and everything i think he'll be fine there's there's what five preseason games left and at max he's gonna get into three yeah i can't even imagine why would you why would you put him in more than one like he's he's gonna lose his job during those games yeah i don't think so the way domi loses this job is if they start slow and he's struggling on that first line and they're like let's try something plus like in-game adjustments are always a thing like michelle could see some time in the same game at that on that line and then
Starting point is 00:18:41 what if it worked right you know and that's how domey loses it yeah i mean one thing that's been frustrating about the leafs in recent years is just i don't know the line shuffling was is useless often like it it the loading up how many times did the leafs get a big goal from loading up it was pretty well we're gonna do well six on five they would that doesn't count okay so we're taking that out of it yes we're taking power play out of it six on five teams yes yes but five on five they're like we're doing tavaris matthews kneelander we're doing mar matthews kneelander whenever how many times you get a big goal whenever they went to that it always felt like now they're they're screwed now they're screwed now well oh okay okay cool can't wait to roll
Starting point is 00:19:27 those guys out and then it's three lines of rubbish like three lines of next to no chance of that puck going and out and over the boards comes david comp like it was brutal and now they like yeah no the top six doesn't look nearly as good obviously um but the rest of it looks much better i look lines two through four and i go there's a chance they might score whereas if the big guys weren't going or were shut down or whatever you're dead you're dead who's saving you yeah no one yeah it's interesting i i i'm excited to see domi with matthews because i think the speed and the vision is there we all know max is a very talented and flawed player and i just i you know in any any player in this situation all you have to do is play to your
Starting point is 00:20:20 strengths and manage manage your weaknesses you don't have to be the biggest guy on the ice matthew nyes already is you don't have to be the best score on the ice austin matthews already is find austin be fearless like you were against ottawa uh and i think that's a spot that he can flourish in he could do you remember this is a guy that at one point in montreal had 72 points like yeah it is in there it is in there 72 and and to be honest the leafs didn't do him the biggest favor because again i think the expectations with a player like this need to be different than what we have it's like well you can play austin anywhere and he's great yeah but he's paid like that with max why are we comparing well because people will do that and
Starting point is 00:20:59 and with max it's like yeah well he's paid at the level that he's at and i think he took a bit of a haircut to stay here because he wants to be a leaf which hey that's also nice to hear and i look at this guy and i go okay so he's paid at the level that he is perhaps getting a slight discount this year and that gets better and better find a spot for him i'm gonna be pretty you gotta find a spot i'm gonna be pretty annoyed if it's in the middle oh as a center yeah oh there's no excuse now please they don't need that no they do dude wah and lawton unless half the team are in body casts please enough and the best center they got david conf yet and that yeah i would rather conf come into the lineup and play center than like honestly let's knock it off i'm curious about your guys's
Starting point is 00:21:44 thoughts on if max domi doesn't perform to the level that he's capable of like the the 28 goal 72 point season is seven years ago yeah right it is it's a long time it is most recent track record with the leafs is eight goals and nine goals in full seasons so if they get a performance out of him like that again not to just go on the negative we can do the good side is he just is on first line player i'll add to the negative his earliest leaf goal over two seasons is is december yeah like if we get another season like that where he struggles out of the gate and it takes months to get things going is there trouble with max domey and his future as a leaf oh yeah you shop him uh like listen over his career like there's lots of evidence he's a great playoff
Starting point is 00:22:34 player he had an unreal run with dallas oh he's great with dallas yeah um he was good with toronto last year yeah i think again they didn't have they didn't have a place for him in the lineup and and you know and then when florida came in they were just outclassed some big goals series yeah you know but uh uh where was i going with that holy smokes sorry the coffee has max's future Max is, oh, yeah, like, dude, if he has another, he doesn't score. Listen, you're on the first line. Yeah. You are scoring before December.
Starting point is 00:23:11 And you know the shame about last season that I remember is before he got hurt and basically played the entire month of November injured, he had one of the highest primary assist rates in the league, if I'm not mistaken. I didn't know that. Yet, or one of the highest, he was great. Like, and people were focusing on, oh, he doesn't have a goal. Yeah, but he's setting up the nastiest, sickest.
Starting point is 00:23:37 His highlight reel is real fun. Like for, he's a flawed player, but his highlights are nuts. I, he's, he's infuriating. The team has a couple of those guys, right? Like, is he not just a more, much more established, different nuances a version of nick robertson you know i think in different ways much better well in different ways one is one should be your assist merchant the other should be your goal merchant yeah robertson scores goals like he did yesterday you're like he should be in your lineup
Starting point is 00:24:12 every single night and then the next shift is a 45 second fire drill yeah and you're like okay perhaps not um he's he's frustrating but if it doesn't work out in this role and you can't find him another role you shop him at the at the amount of money he's making but with it in the back of your mind that he's still got some versatility and he's a good playoff because not to go like full first take with it but when he's getting this opportunity with marner gone you're gonna play on the first line to start the season it feels make or break oh it is it is jesse it's the biggest opportunity of his career yeah it is i mean tell me a better player that he's played with oh it's the biggest opportunity of his career but also if it doesn't work out they're a little
Starting point is 00:25:01 screwed i don't think they are i got michelle they got other things they got other options yeah but then you're taking away a guy from the second line right if if we're assuming michelle ends up with Tavares and Nylander so now he's got to go up and rescue Austin I think who's coming I think this is Tina Glenn talking I don't think you're wow hey I really don't and I'll tell you this before they go shopping Max Domi they're shopping Yarn Croak and Conf no of course you know what I mean like that in terms of shoppable list even if this doesn't work you said something is to plug in his place as opposed to moving him this is months from now yeah like he it's not going to be five games and we make a decision no like he's got to be bad like past chris but
Starting point is 00:25:43 for me it's like if you can't work out in this role and excel then you're never going to work out in the top line role yes right then we know from here on out your middle bottom six but we got already not on i don't but we got a pretty delicious snapchat or snapchat snapshot i haven't had snapshot for years uh since domi at 72 points uh and got it for two weeks got sent a couple dick pics said i don't like listeners right those people listen or watch the lfr yeah yeah this guy just sent me the bass and i went coward deleted the app yeah i i i think that's so funny man that's so funny it's not enough man coward what could go wrong with an instant phone messaging yeah uh who would have thought i i just think that with this you're looking at a scenario where
Starting point is 00:26:34 the Leafs have two pretty good options here you gotta remember with Matias Michelli like I listen let's be honest most of us maybe heard the name once and forgot it this is not a name that was like a big factor in Toronto when he came here there was no like heads up the Leafs are interested in this guy um obviously there's the Shane Doan connection because of Utah slash Arizona but matthias michelli's um line mates when he was at his best were nick bustad and lawson kraus so when i saw the leafs got him i was like oh okay yeah that's great i didn't know that i like i hadn't caught up with him in a year right so i was like what do you mean he had 18 points yeah bad year this guy's good yeah oh he must have been injured he wasn't just didn't work it no
Starting point is 00:27:24 and so very not i look at him and i'm like okay so here's a guy who wants some scoring from the depth wouldn't michelle uh dakota joshua and nick waugh look good and if that looks good and something happens on the top line well then you put them up there with like more talented more talent in those two players than he's ever played with on a single line i i think they've got options to to shuffle around and i feel like domi and michelle if domi goes on a 15 game run where it's great and then a five game run where it isn't that doesn't mean that he's off the first line forever no you do swap i i think domi is too good for the conversation that we're having if i agree with you i think he's i i think the vision the puck handling the speed
Starting point is 00:28:10 the consistency is a problem consistency is a problem decision making is a problem yeah i which fights shall we enter is hopefully none like he loves ruining the least momentum with a bad penalty his defense i want to say leading into the playoffs and then in the send series i was like who is this like it was it's the best i've seen him yeah uh i i'm rooting for the guy on account of he's on my favorite team and probably their top line december max 15th was his first goal last season that's unacceptable i know i know he was injured yeah played through injury didn't have a spot like the they couldn't figure out their third line it's crazy that like let's let context matters that was his 23rd game of the season 23rd and what was it the year before
Starting point is 00:29:02 i can it was also december it was late yeah second he didn't have great start his first goal of the season in the 23 24 season was december 2nd wow his 22nd game of the season can we make predictions um if it's going to be sooner than december or later i think we're all saying soon i'm elbow dropping the over yeah i think this year we're expecting a lot more so we'd all bank i guess that's the under actually yeah it's the under yeah yeah um yeah when do you think his first goal will be opening night okay yeah let's get an opening night goal hell yeah hell yeah anytime goal maximum yeah and he's gonna look off austin to do it oh yeah two on one leg kick and he's gonna shoot so like the willy look yeah really thing it's that's if he does
Starting point is 00:29:57 go to if he does the alt leg willy where like he willy fakes out goalies by using like moving to the wrong leg or the wrong side doing that it's smart he's gonna kick up his right leg and he's gonna rip it matthews is gonna be wide open in front he's gonna say no it's my turn to shoot yeah they're gonna exchange funny glances and laugh and ho ho yeah um a little minutiae with the michelli stuff he hasn't played right wing because the coaches in utah didn't like him on the right like they tried it in practice and that's worked out great for them anyway he was a left winger the whole time he's been a left winger since being the nhl but he said he's comfy playing on both sides like because they didn't want to give him that opportunity doesn't
Starting point is 00:30:34 mean he can't play on both sides and he said he's perfectly fine if he wants to be if they want him to be a right winger in toronto one chemistry is like every player is a little different i i'm willing to give the guy a shot man like this is a new guy shot if it works out on that even on the second line um you know i know they got mcmahon there now but if michelle is able to move up into that i do see some sort of like imagine you're you know it's a five on five scenario here tavaris in tight willie cycling and you know drops to michelle and michelle can find them right like that is that seems like a good seems like a good potential fit there so here's a question if mcmahon doesn't work out on the second line left wing where where do you belong mcmahon
Starting point is 00:31:18 yeah probably fourth i would think as a four checker hardcore because you know i don't know it depends on what's going on in the third line but they've got i i feel like why and dakota joshua are the staples there we just don't know who else is going to play with them mcmahon's mcmahon with them would be it would be kind of a big scary line yeah his game needs to diversify a little bit um i think harder for checking would be nice right he's big boy yes we he okay you can shoot and you're fast as shit good on a rush yeah great what else like it's it's the nhl we need more well and i don't know that he's going to surprise people quite the way that he did the last two years because i think people are catching wise to the fact that he is really fast oh he
Starting point is 00:31:59 used to surprise people it's one of my favorite things last season uh like there would be a loose puck and i'm like that guy doesn't know and bobby wins and i'm like he has no idea he's he's got to be one of the fastest guys on the team yeah i would love to know because um the leafs called pure engvall biscuit because it's which if your nickname is about how fast you are i got to assume you're the fastest guy on the team but it's pure engvall fastest doesn't necessarily mean best how much did lou give him seven years three million 21 million seven years and that even in a rising cap environment is too much money uh he's injured actually to start camp this year oh i was gonna say is he making him in varlamov i think yeah varlamov's off out for a few months
Starting point is 00:32:50 and i i don't know how bad months yeah i don't think varlamov's play i you might be right about the islanders not being very good this year that was me oh jesse uh i can never remember i happen to agree one of you said it and then the other agreed that's that's what we need yeah puck media has a varlov and angle on ir like that i are oh boy i are before the cap even matters oh my goodness boy that's a bad start for angle yeah yeah uh adam hey man that's like every year it's a bad start for angle you you might remember this player adam deep cut uh this player at jared smithson leaf skills comp ben hunt ben not ben hunt dryden hunt dryden went to school with a ben hunt yes i've done that so many times i know i'm like i know that name oh no that's a high
Starting point is 00:33:36 school person anyway keep going um this guy at the leaf skills competition won hardest shot and fastest skater same year it's not angball is it nathan parrot nathan parrot nathan wow parrot so i do remember nathan parrot fastest skater does not equal best it's what happened with that when the flames drafted rico fata ah the coach said he's he's the fastest on one end of the rink to the other but he never takes the puck with him another guy who won fastest skater at the leaf skills competition max's dad ty yeah it's a great it was a very very good skater so that's the thing with ty he was a crazy 12 in the net in over the course of the year you could put ty out in an offensive situation and he would scare people and occasionally score sometimes life throws your
Starting point is 00:34:21 curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a Tasker. Here's the thing. TaskRabbit

SAP Grow is built with AI embedded at its core, working across every system. Starting point is 00:36:08 win but like who cares um cali yarn croak scored with 17 seconds in nick robertson obviously it's the preseason he's going to score every game what a shot it's a monster shot but it got a little chippy when uh tyler clevin uh hit michael pizzetta and it looked like from behind on the head i think it's just a hockey play like i don't see that as like a it was less on clevin and more i was he he went into the boards badly he did and i think if it wasn't that absolute psychopath michael pizzetta the player might have gotten injured but it's michael pizzetta who is he's terrifying he is he's not afraid of anybody or anything lots of experience playing against ottawa because he played montreal for so long i don't know how many games he's going to play this
Starting point is 00:36:50 season but he is 100 playing the two games the leafs have against the sharks and fighting ryan reeves probably four times combined because he's insane he's an insane person he's crazy do you miss ryan reeves uh no no now that now that things have started he's officially a shark uh no no i liked him but i he's fine i felt i felt the way he's a nice man i saw the interview he did when he went out and i was like oh uh a little bit it was a little i got turned off i and i liked him a lot while he was here i was i was a reeves booster i was like yeah go fight people that's awesome uh i felt i felt a little put off by that interview as a fan and that's okay he's a listen he had his perspective i have mine i didn't like the answer uh getting a player you
Starting point is 00:37:35 might actually use for ryan reeves is nuts it's yeah like i mean and that player was chirped by brady kachuk yesterday henry thrun brady kachuk was going after him it's like oh man brady doesn't have so remember i said no one was trying i lied brady kachuk uh it he he doesn't get it like it's it's henry thrun he was going after he was going after landon sim uh and marshall refi is a is a psychopath and tell me more about that because you were tweeting about that yesterday oh gosh i love him like listen I don't know how on earth he plays games for this team uh they have their same six guys from last year they have Thrun they have Myers they have Mermis they have so many guys signed to NHL deals but this guy you watch him play he's a mouth like he's he's mouthy he's yappy
Starting point is 00:38:29 he'll fight what the what is he doing fighting Zach McEwen that's not a good match for him but he took him up on it and he did okay i mean it wasn't a complete disaster and he tried to obliterate he tried to wipe ridley greg off the face of the earth and i was like when he when he dropped the gloves with batherson and perron came in i was like what's perron doing and then i was like oh he's trying to prevent drake batherson from fighting from fighting like a marley's in the preseason yeah there's no need for that that's freaking silly but uh that that game was what it's exactly what you want to see out of every player in that group easton cowan and david perron went at it too good and and cowan's little little uh bat down
Starting point is 00:39:20 of the puck there that led to camp getting it and feeding it to robertson for the blast that's a nice little play like everyone had i i feel like the kind of game that they needed to have um you know danford took two penalties that wasn't great i loved how he played otherwise um actumov built a little bit of confidence there there was a lot to like about that but it doesn't necessarily it doesn't mean anything further certainly it's better than all of them going out and doing a bad job exactly like it doesn't mean anything for their prospects of playing opening night necessarily um you know these guys they're not in their preseason games they're not just trying to impress the leafs um trying to impress other clubs well most of these
Starting point is 00:40:09 guys are gonna end up on waivers and like marshall refies on a multi-year multi-year nhl deal who knows maybe he gets picked up maybe pesetta gets picked up maybe who knows yeah refi was on waivers last october because just to push him through and he didn't get claimed but maybe he's looking for a spot this time oh no mermis too mermis did get claimed and it actually i thought made his season a lot more difficult yeah i don't think utah made him i don't think that was good if there's opportunity because of injuries marshall refi is a guy i'd like to see get a shot like i want to see he's played two nhl games and it came the 23 24 season that was keith yeah yeah that would have been keith yeah if it's 23 24 like he played two nhl games last year he
Starting point is 00:40:57 was up and down a whole bunch of like protection as the eighth defenseman or whatever it is but they never used him or found a way to use them this year i'd like just one of those games where injuries happen the guy needs a night off try motion yeah maybe chris tanf could take a night off getting absolutely pounded in the corner see i see rafai as like kind of a benoit replacement guy like if benoit were to get hurt just some lunatic you can throw it there and hit everyone i like that wouldn't you rather have the lunatic that's and the problem in recent years has been not enough lunatics give me the lunatic he broke out of uh ken reads book one night only by playing those two games yeah only those two games he's gotta get we need double digits one week only
Starting point is 00:41:41 yeah that's ken's next one yeah actually thank you for mentioning that because jacob quillen um he's still in one night only oh he had the one game played last year and he got injured five minutes in by nick cousins yes and he took that was pretty that was a cheap shot that that he took on on nick cousin i don't know if he ever gets a game jacob quillen yeah i don't know how he does i don't know how he does like yeah like look they've got five lines i know yeah that means that that means there's like six guys that are really hurt yeah i know the problem with with a game like that if you're just a sicko is you start to get like a crush on all these guys and it's like uh okay where do you put them yeah you got to take someone out yep absolutely i love
Starting point is 00:42:30 marshall refi all right who are you taking out oh the flaw in my plan i thought they increased roster size to friggin 30 nuts Quillen still only 23 I shouldn't cast him aside so yeah he's got playing a piece of crap yeah Jesse did you see anything in that game that translated for some of the stuff that you saw at camp no no
Starting point is 00:42:51 no no that's just like there's so little to take away from a preseason game it's like if you make evaluations and judgments you have to realize that it's practice yeah like it's practice for everybody out there and like I like I like the energy stuff you're talking about the guys who are willing to go in this environment like that's fun but in terms
Starting point is 00:43:07 like skill against the other team it's nick robertson thing over and over again he's going at a thousand percent he's an nhl player of course he's going to score that goal he should score that goal he's meeting expectations by looking good out there and i think it'll be even more interesting to see um on tuesday kind of what the more a squad looks like together and see how those lines mesh in a practice environment against another and i would not be surprised though if they lose that game because it's like auto is no guys are not going to go 100 they're just not and i don't know that toronto's guys are gonna go 100 they didn't lose because the scent or the sins didn't lose because they're bad no the score is so irrelevant yes these games yeah yeah um yeah you want to look
Starting point is 00:43:50 at the individual performances so it's it's the bad news bears game one the mostly nhl squad game two games three and four i think are the really interesting ones because you see who's impressed and who's getting a new opportunity yeah those are like the tryout games where we're like okay we're kind of dialed in on like you could have this spot or the other guy could have the spot show us what it actually is you show us what we should pick here for those lines i think you're you nailed it like those games in the middle are kind of the important preseason game five and six and then like the last one yeah the last one just fucking throw it out the window if you guys were sent back to junior the guys that are still around are obviously the guys that are taking a longer
Starting point is 00:44:31 look at and you have to narrow it down there's like 57 guys to start camp like you can't 73 oh 73 oh my god remember i said 72 and then steve corrected me 73 stupid so um did anybody in that game if you're if you're an easton cowan or something like that and you want to have an outside shot to make the roster and i think anybody watching the leafs could go well sure he's got an outside shot at it uh i don't think it's gonna happen but to say he doesn't have an outside shot is there any way from game one to really elevate or is it just like hey that's game one and you better you better keep bringing it going yeah yeah i don't think there's any big takeaways i guess my point anyone could have one good night it is noteworthy though to be
Starting point is 00:45:15 a junior eligible player still with the team yes and that is the case for ben danford and that's the case for miroslav halinka noted alan walsh client really like him yeah because he's kind of a bastard isn't he he's kind of a bastard creative player too yeah i like that um okay anything else on the least preseason i don't want to spend too much time on it like the act him off okay you know what's his name oh why did they call him i don't think we're right like okay that's on you to find out jesse i might be wrong to go around i'll pull up the name pronouncing you're our guy i'll text the media so for years we've been sitting here saying act him off and then finally the broadcast happens where he's in a game and it's act they
Starting point is 00:46:02 they couldn't figure out thomas you know what his name for like five years so i'm i'm i'm texting a russian oh yeah okay but hold on i gotta ask a question no you don't we don't fed federov was fedorov right in russian uh fedotov is fedotov um are we pronouncing it the russian way or are we just going to anglicize it because that's normally what we do i feel like if aktimov is like the english way to say it then we should probably just do that yeah instead of trying to do the pure russian way unless that's what he prefers finland's not out here asking us to call them swami they're like oh it's finland in english yeah we get it like turkey's trying to do that they're trying to they actually were turkia okay um so you gotta call yeah it's turkey it's not
Starting point is 00:46:47 spelled turkey anymore either they have like an eye because i guess they didn't want to be associated with the bird uh but to be fair in other languages names sound different so i i am i gonna pronounce akimov or fedotov or fedorov in their native tongue probably not right i asked the fucking guy and he said actiama and like like nicholas wa okay we said patrick what whatever i get french is a little closer because it's french and english in canada so i could see that maybe but like i don't know yeah i'm like i don't speak those languages man i speak this one and here's how it sounds there's a bunch of swedish names like that too like if you want to go pure little japan forsbury right forsbury right so it's forsberg yeah it depends on i guess what the
Starting point is 00:47:34 guy wants in the broadcast yeah so i don't know i got it i got a jump scare like when i turned on the tv and i didn't hear i'm like who is that yeah and then i got 40 more yeah you know like oh i didn't like how he said that ah he said it again ah he kept doing it it was an infliction yeah yeah yeah i don't gotta find a way to settle we're gonna we're gonna find an answer i said Give me a voice note of how you say Artur Akhtyamov. Oh, here we go. Oh, that was quick. Artur Akhtyamov.
Starting point is 00:48:08 Akhtyamov. Akhtyamov. Artur Akhtyamov. No, that's three syllables. Akhtyamov. No. Honestly, I don't even. Artur Akhtyamov.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Shout out, Andrey. My mouth can't do that. My mouth can't do that. Artur. Oh, fuck. so anyway act him off had a good game yeah you're doing that had a good game you're doing i'm not doing that shit no shit no it's like remember nicholas nikolai kuhlman it was uh kuhlman yeah uh yeah hey that's cool i'm off
Starting point is 00:48:40 acti i'm off is in my vocabulary okay but that is forced there's the wrong amount of syllables now you're just making me mad what about grabowski what do you think he's a he's canadian guy now but uh uh it's pronounced grabbo ah mikhail grab a ghoul i wish i had that in my arsenal when he was a leaf how did you feel about bartolini's goal oh barbellini's goal oh hey fucking hey i was like oh man we got to mention barbellini i forgot about that if he gets sent down it's anti-italian discrimination yeah there you go I love Barbellini. 27, he's just a kid.
Starting point is 00:49:22 Great name. Aktyomov. Aktyomov. I will beat you up. Hear that? It's your money calling. It wants a promotion. Elevate your savings with the Scotia High Interest Savings Account.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Always earn high regular interest rates that grow the more you save and invest. Conditions apply. visit scotiabank.com slash hisa to learn more scotiabank you're richer than you think uh there's a player mason mctavish uh of the uh ducks russian great who is stating awful who is skating in atawa with the 67s um now the rumor has it that he was offered five years 5.5 million dollars from the ducks and if you listen to any of the insiders and any of their shows they're all like he's open to a long-term deal however 5.5 million dollars in five years is going to be like two million dollars now isn't five long term five years long i feel like above well that's what
Starting point is 00:50:24 that's what i'm saying three and up oh that's what i'm saying got it got it um my my point is that the amount of money is not nearly enough no he's he's right to turn that down right and so what i thought you guys might find and find funny is what you need to know is that last year the ducks were just a pain in the ass all the way through to deal with the coach and the gm when the coach is a pain in the ass like that um it it it grades on the players and i don't think greg cronin's communication style jives with what gen z or even millennials are about and i think people who just don't like being spoken to like an asshole yeah a chicklets had a good story about him somebody told a hilarious story about cronin and he's like i don't know anyway it was very seems like a
Starting point is 00:51:08 universally bad coach to everybody well yeah listen i think they like him but like his coaching style is like it's like lunatic you're you're it's just it's crazy i don't think that works now they've obviously brought in joel quinville different coaching style and he has joel has changed with the times in terms of his style uh but what has not changed is that pat for beak is a pain in the ass and apparently uh any team that calls about mason mctavish he's told him to fly a kite um and he did say this it's disappointing that he's not here obviously we have virtually a whole new coaching staff and the group is really excited like i've never seen before there's a new system that's getting implemented there's a lot of things to learn and it it takes
Starting point is 00:51:50 a lot of reps to get it under a player's belt so when mason gets here he's going to have a lot of catching up to do so so that more than anything i mean i've been through this scenario okay it's not easy to join mid camp or miss a whole camp camp is very very important part of a player's preparedness going into the season so from that aspect it's disappointing now that feels to me like i think craig mctavish is trying to break the player's spirit sorry um pat verbeek's trying to break the player's spirit um you said craig i know i didn't mean craig mctavish i don't know why i said that um and i think it's interesting how the ducks do business because this deal is not really about this deal no this deal is about leo carlson cutter gauthier who else is on that
Starting point is 00:52:40 team that needs a new deal in the next couple of years uh minchukov yeah yeah um did they get dosed all done jackson lacombe jackson lacombe is gonna be a big one yeah you know they're olin zellweger too yeah there's an rfa so they've got these guys that are young and good at hockey and that is gonna be um i you know ducks fans i could see them online being upset about beaking hey oh uh about about pat verbeek being a pain in the ass well let me tell you something who pad for beak no who's gonna be upset uh ducks fans oh no the captain of the ducks told me there are none so what i don't know what he's talking true no gudas gudas what do you mean he told you there are no ducks what is where are you going with this no i wrote about it in the book he's one of
Starting point is 00:53:33 many players who are like yeah no i didn't want to sign somewhere where there's like pressure and interest so i'm just gonna go where they don't fucking care but they do care they do care very much no no those aren't my words the captain of the ducks says there are no ducks fans i'm what just like there's no golden knights fans and there's no panthers fans and there's which is a weird thing to say yes it is and it's insulting there's fans of all those i just want to be clear we don't believe that well i don't believe and i'm seeing ducks fans upset with verbeek about this i will tell you what he's using the leverage that he has where he gets to be the GM of a team with no fans.
Starting point is 00:54:17 What pressure is there? Your market doesn't care. Right, and where I'm going with this. According to you, your market doesn't care. For context here, I pulled up this article that was in DH Sports in August 2nd, 2023. It says, Canadian media pressure caused Gudis to turn down offers from Leafs, Oilers, and Flames.
Starting point is 00:54:35 Man, look what Mark Masters did. Shout out Colton, who wrote this. It says, in a recent interview with a Czech outlet, Goudas explained that he had offers when free agency began from the Leafs, Oilers, and Flames. However, he chose to avoid all three markets due to how harsh the media can be on players there. Goudas explained that when playing the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round of this year's Stanley Cup playoffs, he could feel the pressure the Leafs were facing despite going up against them as a member of the Florida Panthers. While many players stay silent on this matter,
Starting point is 00:55:06 it isn't exactly a secret that some of the players prefer to play in lesser hockey markets as the pressure isn't as... Oh, is that where you are, Anaheim? Is that what the captain views you as? Oh, okay, a lesser hockey market. Well, that's the writer who put that in there. No, no, get to Gutis' quotes, though, because they're great.
Starting point is 00:55:22 This article doesn't have the exact quotes. What? Yeah, it's just a summary. I can pull up the exact, if you want. Yeah, well, it's quoted in Hockey Rants and Raves. You don't have one next to you? You don't have a copy? I don't have that.
Starting point is 00:55:33 Here's the deal. Okay, we got it. We got it. And... No, I just... We got it. Every time a player says that, i think fans should get upset i i agree with you but prove your existence by getting upset about
Starting point is 00:55:45 that there are ducks fans and i have is a market like anaheim where there's much less pressure was a better fit that is his i wanted to go somewhere where i can make millions of dollars for a fan base that doesn't give a fuck but that's i wanted to have my cake and eat it too also not true the the the ducks do have fans and uh there are many of them one of the toughest guys in the nhl is baby shit why are you so worked up about this because i hate when nhl players try to have their cake and eat it too it's a fucking business the money doesn't come out of thin air earn it yeah the leafs are also paying for that yeah let's be honest now uh enjoy your leaves montreal new york boston you know what i'm talking about yeah uh but my two back to my point
Starting point is 00:56:31 which is separate from Steve's although valid and I agree I went on a side quest Pat Verbeek has got to learn from Brendan Shanahan and Kyle Duvis and that is that Pat Verbeek has got some major negotiations coming up
Starting point is 00:56:48 I wholeheartedly agree he has got to hold the line here because if he doesn't hold the line here you will get stomped and it happened to the Leafs and they have all this cap space and the cap is going up and they're going to be able to add to this group so it won't just be all on the young guys and they have a good group of older veterans true truba and cry
Starting point is 00:57:08 and they signed michael grandlin or mikhail depending upon who you ask uh scondry too uh you know the i think that is going to be so it's not this is not about mason mctavish this is about everybody and that is a really tough negotiation to be in and i wonder how long this goes on because of the optics of your Leo Carlson's and your Lev Shinov's and your... Lev Shinov's Chicago. Minchukov. Minchukov, excuse me.
Starting point is 00:57:39 Both defensemen, right? At least I got that. Did I get the position right? No. Nah, shit. I'm doing my best here. No, but what's interesting with that is, so Dubas' fatal flaw was the Nylander contract,
Starting point is 00:57:53 which ended up being the cheapest and best one, like by a wide margin yeah that's also how mctavish is going to end up like if you take ceiling into account i think minchukov who's a defenseman who's a defenseman same with lev shunov i don't know why he's not lev shunov's a blackhawk yeah but he's a defenseman is he yeah i don't know why he took that so i was right yeah they're both oh i thought you meant carlson barbellini i thought you meant carlson i'm so upset i thought reset everything people mason mctavish right yeah wants to play in a market where no one cares where no one fucking cares no he wants to play in a market where people care that's why he's in
Starting point is 00:58:41 ottawa um what let's stop it go uh he just ottawa to just enjoy the last compliment you get this season but nylander signed the cheapest contract out of that group and i think mctavish is going to as well because i think mintukov is going to make more than him and i think carlson is going to make more than him and i think they should well carlson's the second overall pick right yeah um unless mctavish were to go off but he should have done that last year if you're not going to win the cheaper ones you're going to get killed on the bigger ones which is exactly what happened to dubas so i think the comparable to uh for verbeek to dubas is actually really apt and it is very important that he wins this so this will i and i hope ducks fans are ready for this
Starting point is 00:59:32 i have a feeling there this will not be the last holdout of this group and and that's okay worst case worst case this guy uh holds it like what is expected of you When Nylander was holding out on the Leafs, they were a playoff team. Yep. On the rise. Yep. And I think they had just gotten Tavares too.
Starting point is 00:59:53 So there's hype and there's expectation. But that was the problem is they had Tavares and then everybody's contract was after that. But there's expectation to get things done. Yep. You're the Ducks. If it's November 30th and the deal's not done, what's the cutoff?
Starting point is 01:00:07 Is it December 1st or December 15th? There's a cutoff date where if you sign after that date, you can't play for the rest of the season. I think it's December 1st or something, whatever, December 3rd. I don't know. Let him rot. Let him sit. Now, that killed my ducks to the playoffs prediction.
Starting point is 01:00:24 But I have given that caveat. Well, you have expectations. Yeah, I do. I need them to get this done for me. Most people don't. So you let him sit for as long as it takes. I think it's very interesting when a negotiation goes this way. Because you look at Barry Trotz and Luke Evangelista, who has flown home as well.
Starting point is 01:00:44 and i think he's also no he's flown he's flown somewhere he's left he's not there and he wants a deal like what jack quinn got which is like two years three and a half or 3.3 or whatever it was jack quinn and buffalo yeah and so and jack quinn the jack quinn deal like nobody pays attention that deal and the and if you think about what luke evangelista brings this is roughly a half a point a game player and they don't even want to give him 3.3 million over two years as a bridge like that's nuts and i i i think that will be very interesting you see how that plays out they are the one thing nashville is strong on on paper is on the wing so they might say yeah we don't really need you yet um it if he was a centerman this deal would be done one thing
Starting point is 01:01:28 we've done over the last couple years is we've looked at rfas who aren't signed and we're like well you got to trade them and that's very not true you don't have to do anything actually the whole point of restricted free agency as a team can absolutely turn the screws on you um and that's what's happening to these guys it sucks for them yeah but this like with evangelista that deal is just him with mctavish it's everybody else and if i were mctavish i don't know why like i understand obviously they live in orange county it's great um with mctavish why would you do five years if you know everybody else after you is gonna no absolutely kill it i'd be like no i'll do two thanks or three and i'll make less and i'll be okay with that because i know where the cap's
Starting point is 01:02:14 gonna be in a few years and i'm excited to be up with these young guys that's what i would do million now yeah so there you go uh get the drag or tweet luke evangelista and the national predators are significantly apart and he's returned to canada which means that he might be in toronto because he's a toronto guy could also be in bc can also be in a calloway okay so canada's a big place could also be in st john's yeah he's returned to a place with heightened media pressure imagine that holy what a what a lunatic uh go to nashville where they notoriously don't care uh i want to talk to you guys about the brad marshand comment that we missed last week and this is a this is an interesting one because it was talked about today on 32 and i just thought
Starting point is 01:02:53 you guys will find this funny brad mershan um talked about how in florida a couple like last week he said this two of the guys probably wouldn't be able to come back if it wasn't a tax free state and the story that frege told on on this show it makes me wonder have we been sold a bill of goods with this nhlpa nhl agreement that the pa got a bunch of stuff and the more i hear about it i'm like what did they get because what happened was apparently a couple players raised the the state tax issue with marty walsh and ron hainsey at the pa okay and marty walsh said yeah okay listen like it's only been the last half decade that tax-free states have been running away with this that you had the tampa bay lightning of the vegas golden knights uh and then you have
Starting point is 01:03:46 florida right okay so uh but like we'll see in the next cycle it's a short cba we'll see in the next cycle if that continues and if it does then we'll address it and brad marchand apparently making that comment out loud pissed off a lot of players who said to the pa guys we need to look at this and by the way pissed off a bunch of players five years or four years in a cba is a fucking lifetime in an NHL career Brad Marchand's contract is longer than the current CBA yes and I and so I to me I'm like yo man if this shit bothered you why your leadership group should have taken that into and then the question always becomes and we've talked about it on the show and we won't get into it what what are they supposed to do about it but the answer clearly from a lot of
Starting point is 01:04:41 players now is that the answer isn't nothing so there's already we haven't played a game under this new cba haven't played a game and there's already resentment about the tax no tax thing and i think that's interesting listen boys big enough for a guy like freach to bring it up it's a big deal boys i gotta tell you i don't care and by boys i mean all the players uh under this cba why this is your union um it's on you as part of that union to give a fuck and uh to to actually pay attention to the details in this thing and if you got fleece that's none of my business that's no one else's business you're all grown-ups you're all adults uh fight for your rights um if you don't want to do that all right well i'll tune in anyway i like hockey i like
Starting point is 01:05:32 watching you play and if you feel like doing that for less than you're entitled to that's your business but they're not going to give it to you well i'm supposed to care it's not my business guys like these oh there's no more dress code you children like are you kidding are you actually kidding they got the health insurance thing through which is good that was very good and no dress code and i don't know i don't know what else to play get what did the players get i don't know the cap's going up but that's not because of the cba that's just revenue they got their term limits limited they can't even sign as long yeah they can make less guaranteed money yeah no they got hacked away at the knees on their contracts which is fabulous work yeah well and
Starting point is 01:06:14 and we know it's not their agents because you got guys like alan losing their minds about stuff like this so darren ferris on on that on that podcast with john shannon yeah he said i will keep my opinions to myself but i didn't like it what so which you he didn't want to get into detail i think he didn't want to drill down yeah but but i think he's right and i think alan's right and i think i mean alan alan uh was big on the health insurance thing that's a major that is a major owner's paying for that is a big deal that's a big deal but i'm trying to figure out like the the league's in a good place the players can make a ton of money they don't want work stoppages if you didn't get it now what makes you think you're gonna get it in five years
Starting point is 01:06:52 anything the you claw any of this back no which pages of the trust me bro claws on and guys get get fleeced any time you get into collective bargaining and the the owner's group is saying yeah it's going really well that's usually not a good sign for you listen everyone that means they're getting everything they want everyone who watches your games everyone who listens to your shows we we all have busy lives that we need to manage and we got to do what's best for us if you are too lazy or uninformed or whatever it is to do what's best for you i don't care i have too much other shit to focus on like so whenever i hear about these things um like i used to get all fired up about it like the the 2012 lockout and everything you know that obviously
Starting point is 01:07:44 killed me um and the players didn't end up coming out of it with anything anyway but maybe the thought is we're not good at this and we suck and get fleeced every time and maybe what we should do is just take the slop they give us and not miss games and maybe that's the right strategy because historically they're so fucking profoundly bad at this i'm not i don't care get on the ice hooray go team jesse you agree or disagree it's hard to disagree with like the fighting of the player side of it because they clearly i think lost the negotiation in the cba because of how much the owners kind of dictated the direction everything was going everywhere was going and i feel like there was a chance to have a real battle over this one because
Starting point is 01:08:35 gary wanted to get this done for his career yeah like he's on the outside he's trying to leave you know eventually he's going to retire i don't i don't know if he's trying to leave but his time's coming and he wanted to get the cba done he wanted to get the tv deal done he wanted everything kind of set in stone and then we kind of operate the business and we can do a bunch of things that we want to do like get the world cup schedule all set and all that stuff so i feel like if gary really wanted to get this done you use that as leverage yes and they never use that as leverage and they never fought for anything they truly wanted so if they wanted something like i don't know something that balances tax-free states advantages or whatever and they never brought it up in
Starting point is 01:09:19 negotiations like that is definitely it's their own leadership group that told them not to do it yeah oh it's only been the last five years the guy who five years the guy who when he was hired we were like hey this is like a betman ally and well it doesn't matter from inside from what i heard they didn't want and this is gonna this will be the nail in the coffin they didn't want somebody who was gonna go toe-to-toe they wanted somebody who was gonna be kumbaya with the nhl yeah and if that's how it kind of played out they got somebody who just did whatever gary wanted to the the the owners got what they wanted the media is getting what they wanted because there's they're not going to cancel any games the fans are getting what they wanted because we're not going to miss
Starting point is 01:10:06 games and the players literally got what they asked for ah my heart rate isn't even elevating boys i don't care um we're not playing in the league so we don't have to worry about no one made you sign it yep yeah yep fair enough okay uh uh one more thing don't complain about the bed you picked light the night is a uniquely canadian experience uniting communities coast to coast in support of those impacted by blood cancers. Funds raised stay in Canada, that's a key one, to fuel local innovation, community support, and national impact.
Starting point is 01:10:42 And this fall, we want to come together with friends and family as we raise our lanterns in solidarity with blood cancer's community. Last year, thanks to supporters like you, over $6 million was raised for blood cancer research and support programs, which is a pretty big number. It's a big, big numero. This year, going for an even bigger impact
Starting point is 01:11:01 and a greater number. Be a part of the unforgettable experience. It's an evening full of hope, celebration, and entertainment for the whole family. Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada is the nation's leading nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness, funding life-saving research, and providing vital support to people affected by blood cancers. You know, we focus so much on let's drive for the cure. Let's get the cure, the cure, the cure.
Starting point is 01:11:23 There's people going through it right now, and the support element, I would say, is the most important in the right now. Anybody that's going through any type of cancer or disease like it will, you know, that's what they need. And it's the support for the family support. They always say, if somebody's sick, it's their partner or their family members that bear the brunt of it. And they kind of silently have to do it. And it's very, very stressful and very hard. So we want you to check out LightTheNight.ca to register.
Starting point is 01:11:52 You can form a team or donate at LightTheNight.ca. Okay. So let's have a look at I want to have a look at these Oilers jerseys This is their alt jersey Do we love or do we hate? We got a round of applause from Madeline This jersey makes me want to become an Oilers fan
Starting point is 01:12:11 Wow Really? I think it's so gorgeous Wow That's really nice I like it too Big time The shoulders, sexy See, this is along the lines of what I was saying
Starting point is 01:12:27 the rangers one was missing it was it was too quiet for some reason this one's real busy but i like the busy jesse i like the stripes i like the logo why did they put a c on the jersey and then not connor's number it's it's a 25 because he hasn't signed an extension c maybe that makes sense maybe that's them sending a message sorry connor marketing jesse that's a good point marketing team needs to check their play it's not ai no it's not a no no that's a picture of it i hate well why would they do that question for everything i'm asking that's i know exactly it's not ai though like it is that's a jersey yeah i'm just it's not let me throw it out there you didn't need to put the c on it yeah like i want to see a letter on it and if you want to
Starting point is 01:13:17 make it 97 if you want to show the letter yeah put mcdavid's number on the jersey not one oilers fan is buying a captain 25 oilers jersey they're buying captain 97 that's such a great point i don't even think you can buy that they probably like turn you down at the shop yeah we can't let that leave the store like what i'm sure the shop would just take your money but yeah your friends would be like you're stupid for doing that um yeah anyway the great jersey yeah yeah jersey's nice very nice strange decision what's that on the shoulder a patch of sorts yes um oil country oh there's an oil country patch that's nice that's a sexy jersey man like oh yeah i don't mind it i think it's gonna look for those doubters out there and there are a few
Starting point is 01:14:07 there is with any new jersey um i think it'll look great on the ice is it off white or is it Here's the jersey on the ice with Matias Ekholm who came out with it to market it. Number 25, Captain Matias Ekholm. Number 14. Yeah, Steve, it looks a little off-white. Oh, it is off-white. Yeah, it is off-white. You know what?
Starting point is 01:14:24 A lot of off-white jerseys because they're going for the old look. I'm like, boo. This one's good. I like this one. And the socks, the gloves. Yeah, man, that's a great set-up. It's a good combo of modern and old, I think. Yes.
Starting point is 01:14:37 Yeah, that's a good kit, man. Yeah. That's a good kit. I like it a lot. Yeah, I like the pants, too. I would buy one of these. I'm really glad they didn't do brown gloves on that one The orange and blue looks really cool
Starting point is 01:14:45 On the lettering for the Bauer gloves Did the Oilers at any point in their history wear brown gloves? Can we all knock it off? I think Gretzky did I hate brown gloves They all played with brown gloves in the 80s Stop it with the brown gloves I don't think Gretzky wore a brown glove
Starting point is 01:15:00 Remember the gloves used to go halfway up their forearm? Yeah it was ridiculous No I'm pretty sure They were just leather Pretty sure it was just a cow uh gretzky steve hates anything from the 70s no i hate things in 2025 i hate like a brand new oh no gretzky did warrior love that's brown he did what are you doing so gretzky had yofa gloves and they did go halfway up his forearm but they were oiler colored
Starting point is 01:15:29 in his first season you just say yofa yeah it's yofa but i've never once in my entire life heard yofa really yeah that's jesse if we always called it yofa i'm too busy when brown gloves were stopped being worn okay modern gloves look stupid like because you're going for the old look so if you're gonna commit to the look like adam said we're the big old oven mitts yeah which i think are cool sure bobby or good enough for bobby or it's good enough for you all right you leather skates too yeah you know what if they're really going for the look go go with the leather skates put connor in some stuff that's just gonna fuck his shit up yeah like just put the flyers back in cooper alls let's go yeah yeah they all lose
Starting point is 01:16:19 14 pounds per game just attracts i cannot believe people play professional hockey games i know i know stupid um i play shinny with an old guy who still wears cooper rolls they're probably older does he like them or is he just cheating he's been wearing them for as long as i've been playing with him so like years jesse do we have an answer yeah i'll read this uh this little overview so players stopped wearing brown gloves when leather was replaced with synthetic materials moving away from natural tanning and dyeing processes to more flexible protective and durable modern options which began to be phased out as natural leather broke down more easily the transition from brown leather gloves um to nylon polyester and synthetic leather composites used today
Starting point is 01:17:06 likely have it happened gradually and with no specific year of when they made the transition so they used to use leather and then eventually everybody's like oh you know what this synthetic material is much better for playing hockey and eventually all the old guys were stopped playing and they stop using those gloves so there you go oh let's all cheer for the detroit brown wings stop it do you i you have a sick jersey just red gloves oh my god we used to have cool tv shows back in the day uh in the mid 2000s like pros versus joes yes yeah those science shows that explain like how things went they need those shows so we can get answers to stuff like this because i've always wanted a show where they make professional athletes play with the equipment that
Starting point is 01:17:49 they use back then i want a full nhl game with everybody using 80s equipment i think that'd be fun and we used to have tv shows that would recreate this shit on like discovery or spike tv and we don't have those shows anymore and i'm asking somebody in society to make these shows i want to know how much the goalie's legs would burn from those wet pads in the third period make mcdavid go out there with brown leather gloves yes and a hard wooden stick that's like a tree still yeah you know i want to see that how does that affect their shot i bet the shots are like because then we can get a real judgment about like how good those guys were yes they're using that equipment all the time they put up those numbers and whatever the the metrics look they
Starting point is 01:18:28 don't have the advanced stats of puck tracking and all that but we got a good relatively skill based comparison if we had the guys today doing it we need cool billionaires yeah we need billionaires with good ideas like yeah instead of buying another yacht or instead of being like i'm gonna friggin move gulf and wrestlemania and everything else to saudi arabia how about just be like you know what i'm putting conor mcdavid in leather skate yeah where where's the guy who's like i'm gonna give austin a hundred thousand dollars for a couple a week of work so he can just play with this stick that's wood a hundred thousand dollars for a week of work jesse it's because he can't take the pay cut uh yeah maybe it's more for a day i don't know uh but like i want i want those
Starting point is 01:19:11 things by the way last last thing on the jerseys this will be the last season of the devil's jersey jerseys oh yeah i don't know i want to know what their fans think of those i think they stink yeah they do they i love those i think those are so much fun man well it was it's a fun little inside joke but i think it's run its course right like i think the devils could do better yeah you need like the devils like come on they should just embrace the fact they're the devils and go full satanic absolutely six six six pentagram older yeah there you go yeah why not uh okay last thing here before we do press conference is the chicago blackhawks settled a lawsuit on friday with a former player who sued the organization for failing to act when
Starting point is 01:19:51 informed of sexual assault allegations against former video coach uh brad aldridge during the 2010 stanley cup playoffs this is from scott powers and mark lazarus former player under the named john doe alleged that blackhawks knew brad aldridge had sexually assaulted him in 2010 and failed to properly investigate the allegations the blackhawks settled uh previously with kyle beach uh with similar allegations in a statement saturday the the blackhawks acknowledged the case and provided no further updates and and the other side did too so and again i'm gonna remind people this is now the third person second player third person that the blackhawks have settled with as a result of what happened in 2010 yep kyle beach this player and also john doe too
Starting point is 01:20:38 and if i'm not mistaken i remember in rick westhead's original reporting there was a female blackhawks employee who i want to say well the what was alleged wasn't nice and i think there might there might be more litigation there i can't remember if that has gone to trial or not or or gone to it wouldn't be trial to settle right what would it be uh it would be a civil court there you go yeah if you're suing for that yeah so it just it it bothers me because we've we've read about this extensively we know of the details and people are like well it's done it's it's five years later it's half a decade later and we're still getting new results and if you look at it this way it's a decade and a half
Starting point is 01:21:26 later right so uh let's do the press conference the steve dangle press conference speaking of the new jersey devils they did their promotions announcements over the weekend okay and actually this morning and they talked about their new fan experiences and their theme nights they're gonna have a star wars night which is awesome because adam likes star wars personally i've never seen star wars but i for the people of care love they will care about that they're gonna have mascot madness where multiple mascots from around the nhl and sports teams in the area join the devil's mascot ng devil nj devil g nj devil for some saturday fun uh the first 9 000 fans in attendance get an nj devil lunchbox which is cool and they announced some new menu items
Starting point is 01:22:26 so we need a fat guy corner yeah wow one menu item in particular this is i'm gonna read the description and i'm going to show you it on the screen i'm hungry too this is perfect their new menu item include menu items includes bacon jam grilled cheese a triple i can see that okay a triple cheese melt of american provolone and sharp wet white cheddar layered with a house-made cherry pepper bacon jam pressed on thick cut texas toast and served with a side of Creamy Campbell's tomato bisque. Oh, I love a tomato soup, man. Holy cow, that sounds fantastic.
Starting point is 01:23:09 A soup at a game, though, is wild. That is nuts. Good point. Good point. All right, can I have three orders of the tomato soup that I can spill all over my white jersey? Yeah, I will say this. Or the person in front of me who I've had an altercation with?
Starting point is 01:23:23 You could slather that all over my body. I would be all about that shit. Next up is a grilled chicken sandwich, juicy grilled chicken breast topped with white cheddar. They're really going for the white cheddar here. Crisp lettuce, tomatoes, all stacked on a buttery toasted brioche bun. They're going fancy on the buns. Yeah, they are. New Jersey loves their buns.
Starting point is 01:23:49 Pulled pork nachos, tortilla chips smothered in gooey cheese sauce, piled high with tender pulled pork fresh salsa diced onions tangy pickled jalapenos and a sprinkle of cilantro that sounds like regular ass nachos pickled jalapenos rice crispy treat chocolate covered crispy rice treats topped with a with a choice of m&ms oreos pretzels or sprinkles that is perfect wow for your toddler yes leo would love that yes and lastly the main event that we need to make our judgments on and the highlight of Fat Guy Corner in New Jersey. Garlic knots.
Starting point is 01:24:27 Soft pillowy knots brushed with garlicky olive oil served with a rich house-made marinara sauce for dipping. And these garlic knots come in this little doodad here. Oh, a doodad. A goalie mask. so goalie mask garlic knots eat order bro don't do not eat what are your what is your assessment of the goalie mask garlic knot how much does this cost that's a good question i don't have it up right now my guess is it's five dollars a knot no man this is new jersey they're not
Starting point is 01:25:05 gonna do the do you like that yeah toronto that would be a 45 meal honest to god maybe that looks that looks phenomenal delicious and if i had unlimited funds i would eat an amount that would you'd never look at me the same i think though the problem is being 37 at least for me is that i eat i eat one of those and i'm instantly tired i wish i would stop yeah i would eat 46 of these i just i i don't know when i eat bread now i just get tired and and just like i i want to be at the game i want to be excited that's why i don't even drink beer at games i'll drink like a vodka soda or something. Well, I'm having a drink. Jesse, you got to cover the Oilers this season.
Starting point is 01:25:42 Why is that? Well, because Adam's going to fall asleep if he has to watch Mondragon. Oh, stop. It means eat bread in Italian, you see. It means eat bread in Italian. Okay. Sorry, Adam, just trashing. Not mid-Steven Ford.
Starting point is 01:25:59 We are deep into concession corner on the show. Oh, I like it. So I have to bring up the next portion of what we are some kombucha with that sorry to answer your question jesse i wouldn't eat those treats is that what john tamaris would say i wouldn't eat those treats but uh maybe more for you steve so uh on in concession corner on monday's edition of the steve dangle podcast
Starting point is 01:26:32 we had a tweet from at cons underscore one two three oh my god let's set it up for the people who aren't watching ottawa's new concession prices so i assume this fan went to the game in ottawa that happened last night and they took a picture of the concession screen at the game last night for the leafs senators preseason game and ottawa has apparently raised their prices to extreme no shit amounts the fan favorite sections a hot dog is 649 a cheeseburger is 1675 that it better be the size of a fucking tortoise a soft pretzel a soft pretzel is 819 it's just bread if you pay eight bucks for a pretzel you deserve to be wrong you deserve to be a senator's fan 719 a popcorn bucket the souvenir one is 1479 you're paying for the souvenir fresh popcorn is
Starting point is 01:27:33 850 whoa gabriel pizza slice is 919 for a slice sen's pizza is 935 poutine is 1449 fries is 729 chicken tenders and fries is 16 that's criminal 67 egg rolls is 1329 i am pretty sure all of these prices beat out scotia bank arena i i would love to see a comparable i don't know you know better than me because i'm gonna take a picture oh i would like pre-season games tomorrow right i'll go down i'd also say egg rolls that people make fun of me for sushi at a hockey game egg rolls at a hockey game um but this is i would do that but i i just gotta say like chicken tenders and fries is supposed to be cheap it's supposed to be like now i understand let's let's let's say something here americans looking at this remember these are canadian dollar prices
Starting point is 01:28:24 right and our dollar is what like 70 cents 65 cents on an american dollar which is why things cost more six seven um it's bad uh and you could tell michael landler's from toronto because those are the prices he used to pay i thought he was supposed to be the owner for the fans well you're paying for the labretton flats and your concession prices clearly for for it to exist because it's not real i got a random question um why is a coffee the half of a price of a dasani water is it 750 or 250 250 dasani water is 525 yeah yeah well is that normally regular water is 525 but if you want bean water it is i think i think the thing is a lot of people don't drink coffee at night i would because i can i can sleep off a coffee no problem but uh a lot of people are
Starting point is 01:29:14 not ordering coffee at a hockey game that's probably the lowest selling item they got like and that's i just figure coffee would probably cost more supply than water though like i don't know odd or maybe not or because they order a lot more water what if it stinks i don't know random what if it's brutal uh my guess is it's brutal if you want a bottle just a basic little bottle of coca-cola so you want a coke zero it's gonna cost you 8.15 a bottled beverage i get like I know we're three Leaf fans here. I guess when I see these prices in other markets, I find it alarming. I expect to get ripped off.
Starting point is 01:29:54 I don't expect you to get ripped off. That's crazy. Holy shit. Souvenir draft beer is 24 bucks. That's 24 ounces. That's a big beer. $15.25 for a 20-ounce beer. Fuck.
Starting point is 01:30:09 Dude, that's brutal. Yeah, you're getting... You're getting gouged in Ottawa. This is crazy. The cheeseburger is by far the most outrageous one. What is that? The cheeseburger, though, he's right, is by far the most outrageous. $17.
Starting point is 01:30:21 Go to a restaurant? For just a burger. Go to a restaurant. It's cheaper. Yes. Yeah. It gets to the point where it's like, and I say this too with subscriptions to sports. It's like, just tell me you don't want me to pay for this.
Starting point is 01:30:37 You've raised the price so high that you're telling me I'm going to eat before I go into the arena. I will find alternate ways to stream the game, and they're pretty easy to find. Yeah, man. I don't know, man. It's like you also don't want my family there. Oh, no. I don't give a shit about your family.
Starting point is 01:30:56 I'm not going to do a four-person outing where it's like two kids and a wife and a husband or whatever. I can't afford that. And that's been that way in Toronto for 25 years. It's like $1,000 for just to get you. They don't want your poor family. Yeah. good point i don't even think they want your middle class family at this point
Starting point is 01:31:17 no oh they want your rich ass family and that's about it last year's hey steven ready for your one game a year and i said yes here's 800 yeah holy shit that's it and imagine you go and they get blown out right you see why leaf fans get so pissed off thank god they won oh my god it's a it's yeah that's crazy those are crazy prices and you know what ottawa is a different town like if you're not from canada ottawa is a very government heavy town it's the capital uh and a lot of those people are on government salaries which are good but not outrageous toronto more of a business capital where they have a lot more capital and a lot more money and a lot more crazy salaries and a lot more i'm schmoozing and bringing clients to
Starting point is 01:31:59 the game uh ottawa is more of like a family environment you you guys might know better than me uh jay's beers are like affordable ish i haven't been in the jay's game yeah jay the jays have done i think a great job with the ballpark and they have a fan section where you can get cheaper shit yeah because if you make it too expensive you'll do what i did in my early 20s which is pre-drink and get blasted yeah and some people like i want to say the sky dome multiple times when i was a kid lost their liquor license or had it had it suspended because people were going to him there's like a sweet spot for prices because you don't want to you don't want to make it so that people are like well i guess i'm gonna pre-drink yeah
Starting point is 01:32:42 and they're having cut waters and then showing up yeah sense yeah my friend peter reminded me of this like last month or something but we used to sneak mickeys into the roger center and then buy like a two liter of Sprite or something to pour our alcohol into there. Good for you. Like a half a decade ago or whatever. Like that's because it was just too expensive for the weird early 20s or whatever
Starting point is 01:33:08 and we couldn't afford beers at the game. So we just sneak in Mickey's and pour them in our sodas. Is there a reckoning coming or is this just going to be the way it is? What? Is there a reckoning coming with the price of these types of things? Oh, Adam, society is collapsing before our eyes, but
Starting point is 01:33:23 here's our silly little hockey show. i'm talking about sports business though so am i well you know when i look at what sports net upped their price to without offering anything they didn't even try they're not like hey we'll give it to you in 1080p if you're on amazon today i can watch your slop i can you could quite literally go online watch for free and get it in 4k for free and i just i i just and it doesn't take that much googling to do it and i'm just thinking like i know that you need you know they always say i'm jesse we're at that sports conference with um phil king and he said you know to be a sports network in canada you need hockey rights and they're a lost leader and in
Starting point is 01:34:05 the jerry jones documentary which i encourage people to watch i know it's biased and whatever but there's some really interesting tidbits and one of the things jerry jones did was he was able to pull the nfl away from cbs on one night of the week or whatever and fox got the games which fox was willing to pay an arm and a leg for not because they were going to make money off of it but because they were going to create a network out of it right it was a lost leader it's like milk and eggs at the grocery store they don't make money off that but that's what gets you in the store and i look at this and i go okay at a certain point we are going to be priced out of this and the nfl is the same and i just feel like i'm i'm just i where i don't know where that line is but
Starting point is 01:34:47 it is coming it is coming does sports like if it because it just it's just keep going up like you mentioned in the springtime about the leafs tickets because we got the announcement that they're jacking the prices up uh this season that's coming and the box prices in particular is the story you had where it was like the ten thousand dollars extra or whatever it was like is does sports become adam are you alluding to where it's it's a luxury item oh it is yeah The upper middle class can afford sporting events. And the reason that they want to be there is because the lower classes love it. It's because of the culture that the lower class has created, where it was fun and exciting and engaging.
Starting point is 01:35:29 And, you know, I find it, you know, I found it funny. I think I told you guys this, but after they announced the price raising for Maple Leaf Sports, I had somebody in a grocery store come up to me who was a woman in her 50s, who is a season ticket holder there and she said i hate this organization i hate how they treat us they treat us terribly they don't do anything and i i compare and contrast do we just come back from san jose and they're doing events where the players are there meeting fans shooting pox whatever i'm like what kind of events do they do with you she's like nothing they don't do anything for us and we can't we can barely sell our tickets it's like it's just i look at this and i go okay at a certain
Starting point is 01:36:08 point we are going to hit a there is a critical line you can't tell me there isn't i i was i was telling i was talking to someone about this the other day texiu the practice facility for the sharks of barracuda mops for performance center yeah oh yeah yeah for performance it's it's nice the ice is very good it's not even close texiu is a community center like it's yeah they're trying to get people to play hockey they're trying to get people to play hockey to skate together they have restaurants and bars like multiple yeah for performance center is please come skate and leave no it's not even come skate and leave it's like do you have enough money to be here exactly yeah like are you sure you've got enough money to be here because this ice is expensive this is where
Starting point is 01:36:46 the least play here's oh we forgot uh here's like one little kiosk with muffins and like you know what i think that's that's interesting because i think like this whole thing has kind of been a trickle down effect if you go from the athletes who are now able to play at that level they're usually from like the nepotism in hockey is rampant like every nhl player is the son of an nhl player and like uncle or yeah and it's become like the only people who can play this sport at that level are people who are well off and it's come down to like the only people now who can watch the game live are people who are also well off and it's a very sad reality well and you talk about adam silver was asked about it last week and he's the commissioner for the nba and he said
Starting point is 01:37:31 it's a highlight sport the nba is a highlight sport and here's what's amazing was one of the craziest quotes i've ever heard a commissioner of anything say and here's where they're wrong uh you can just like not fucking uh watch what yeah just watch the highlights so what they're doing is they're taking data points out of context and they are applying them to younger generations and i'll talk specifically about formula one they are like looking at should we shorten races should we do this should we do that because what we're finding is a bunch of kids like to get online and watch the highlight videos and i have to tell you that was always the case before youtube existed because you know what i used to do i get up and watch jay and dan on the
Starting point is 01:38:15 fucking sports desk every morning every morning the reason i'm here is because of mornings like that yes yes yes you know why because a you want to find out what happens around the league b if your team won i i want to see that shit again and again and again and i wasn't allowed to stay up that late yeah that's also literally find out sometimes yeah yeah that's true that's totally true i don't think i was able to stay up past nine until i was like in grade seven or i used to cover the ticker with my hand on the bottom of the oh yeah the highlights were a surprise to me yes i can watch the highlights like did you guys worst worst feeling you see it and you're like oh yeah yeah yeah and i used to get mad because they used to track goals and assists in a bracket
Starting point is 01:38:56 it beside the name and if they didn't have the assist tracker i get super pissed about it because i'd be like i don't know how many assists my you know uh uh i don't know travis green or michael renberg have and i'm pissed about that now i've got to go look it up in the newspaper um and i guess i guess the thing is is that people think these guys think that oh my own my kids only exposure to the game is watching the highlights no they watched the game maybe they didn't watch it as long as you did because you're old and tired. And believe me, I'm old and tired. I like to sit and watch the game because it's the only time in my life I'm allowed to do nothing. Whereas kids are like, hey, I can do nothing all the time. I'm going to do something and I'm not going to
Starting point is 01:39:37 watch the whole thing. And yes, I will be on my phone, but I am going to go back and watch the highlights. So you're getting them for the game and you're getting for the highlights, which is the best of both worlds. And they're going, no, they only want the highlights. You guys, I don't know what happens in in in the halls of power i'm clearly not in them but i have to tell you the disconnect from reality when when uh stefano dominicali in f1 says that when adam silver in the nba says that they're the only two idiots who said it out loud what do you think adele's thinking what do you think betman's thinking i get so concerned the mlb seems to be at least headed in the right direction by grabbing their local rights and going we're going to start a
Starting point is 01:40:16 subscription service the john boy stuff yes yeah they are getting it yeah because they're getting old i get so concerned when adam silver like adam silver's supposed to be the good one he was the good one not anymore and well no and then he says shit like that and not to mention the clipper stuff that's going on well there's not much he can do about that until the investigation's done yeah well uh who's doing the investigation him or pablo right it's a third party it's i know i know um he was supposed to be the good one here i have an educated guess there so i was at least tv and sort of just getting my start when companies were obsessed with short everything's got to be short yeah it's got to be snackable
Starting point is 01:41:02 content i remember that pivot to video that was a rogers thing we're uh we're pivoting to video they're trying we're not going to give you any tools to do it uh but you're going to pivot to video they're making snackable content uh and everyone's doing it it's really permeated music like oh yeah you can't get signed now unless you have a tiktok following what tiktok following but like why is your song 90 seconds i just got into it yeah 90 that's a ringtone are we still buying those what the fuck are you doing anyway sorry big x the plug i'm very upset with that your song length is inadequate it's snackable content it went to long form people realize no no no like i was making my lfrs really short and it was in part because industry experts who i spoke to
Starting point is 01:41:57 like bosses were like no no short short short short short and my comments were flooded with make them longer and i stopped listening to my bosses and i started listening to the fans they wanted it longer and longer and longer and longer and maybe now they're too long and i'm like okay or not maybe maybe i could get them from 20 down to 15 or something like that i don't know man if you've got something to say and it's good just say it like why would you cut it yeah also make the thing that you're making yeah well okay i'll give you an idea like so so we're everyone's doing two minute videos you make 15 so now you're gonna make you're gonna be every other asshole yeah no make the thing that you make everything we've been told in broadcast which is short short short
Starting point is 01:42:43 short short short keep it short keep it short um and we saw that in radio we've seen it in television we're seeing it oh it's only highlights no that's not true and i and i think you're right it's i don't know they're looking at data and not talking to people they think you're all zombies they think you're all zombies who are glued to your phone and never look up and you're if you're a cord cutter it's because you don't watch games anymore or and you don't watch tv anymore and you don't watch shows anymore which is dumb and stupid like the people making these decisions are not people who have lived a normal life for many years that's true i i think that's very true yeah when was the last time any of the people making these decisions had to worry about a
Starting point is 01:43:26 cable subscription they're fabulously rich or work very close with the fabulously rich and they think a banana is 60 like like fucking arrested development they have no idea what's going on and it it's cyclical and it'll go right you know what every organization should have me uh they should have a direct line to the frontline workers who make the least amount of money and the youngest bring back you know what jesse you're right we used to have great television bring back undercover boss that show was never that good no it wasn't jesse do undercover boss or we just know it was jesse i think you'd know hello i'm the six foot five new employee here to learn video editing we're raising our subscription prices to two hundred
Starting point is 01:44:16 S-P-D-N Which is what they call it every time I go to the bank Alright, we'll wrap up Sorry, we went off I do think there's a line though One correction while we exit Alex Nylander I said he didn't have a contract
Starting point is 01:44:32 He has a Marley's contract, no NHL contract On August 4th Thank you for everybody who corrected me On August 4th, he signed a Marley's contract Does that mean he doesn't have to be waived then? Yes Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. So yeah, no NHL deal, just Marley's deal.
Starting point is 01:44:47 Alex, we got two Neyland. That's smart, because he probably doesn't want to move, right? Why would he? S-T-E-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast. Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle, at Adam W-Y-L-D-E, and at Jesse Blake.
