Starting point is 00:00:00 with your host steve dangle adam wilde and jesse blake happy regular season christmas day we're kicking off the season with tampa and whoever's playing tampa it's pittsburgh okay it's pretty good it's a good matchup yeah why don't you start off i know i know start off with love. Is Crosby playing? I know Malkin's out. No, Crosby's out. So no Crosby, no Malkin. Yep. But you'll get to see the Christopher Letang Pittsburgh Penguins
Starting point is 00:00:37 take on Kucherov. Brian Boyle? Brian Boyle. Oh, wait, no. No, no, no. The Lightning? Yeah. Oh, well, the Lightning. Yeah. Is Kucherov sitting, right? Stamkos is playing. He's not hurt yet? No. Okay, good. Hey. Well. I mean, unless they
Starting point is 00:00:52 need the LTIR space. Then he's definitely hurt. Yeah, I mean, for sure super hurt mate you know what what here's my bet here's my bet they were did you know they were 18 million over the cap i've never heard underrated story never heard that open your eyes folks you know what if somebody found out they might have to take the cup back yeah but nobody told the nhl so they have to i guess until someone does tell the nhl that they were 18 million over the cat it 2021 no cup no cup um 1999 no cup oh 2004 no cup or just retroactively give it to calgary yeah that's true good point good point should we talk about the actual big game going
Starting point is 00:01:37 on today what's the actual big game the seattle kraken versus the vegas golden knights are they playing tonight first ever game uh for the seattle crack it happens tonight at 10 p.m okay so here and like half their roster might be missing here's the weird oh yeah yeah so we'll talk about the crack and roster situation a little bit here but i it's funny that they are the new nhl team and up here in canada they have not been marketed at all that game has not been marketed at all it was the pittsburgh tampa game but i have not seen a thing on the kraken it's gonna be on tv well that's good not a lot of non-canadian pacific division games end up on tv if the tv people could tell us it was going to be on tv that'd be cool they have why are you yelling at steve's employer i said
Starting point is 00:02:17 start off with love i knew that hang off with hate i knew that and you didn't maybe you're just always bell bell bell this game's not on tsn i can't see it can you talk into your remote i watch broadcasts only thank you the game's not on crave steve adam's upset that's right hey hey listen as a favor to you well just you now i have crave but other than that is thank you thank you for supporting the conglomerate it thanks you yeah it's very important your money it needs your money the 22 billion dollar company needs your subscription whenever i see a pay phone i kick it i go piece of shit take that alexander graham yeah oh yeah how about i ring your bell you know put up your dukes gangs in new york style
Starting point is 00:03:07 what do you want to talk about um i want to talk about the big news that just broke the huge huge news did you hear adam brooks's teammate that's right adam brooks's teammate nick suzuki signs an extension but adam brooks is the big story i thought so i know i really want to talk about adam brooks for a second here before we talk about nicks because we have to and that's our brand yeah shut up yeah so first show hmm all right anyway stop pre-arguing no like is that an irrational fear correct you you wouldn't know it by by listening to it but steve's actually really not feeling very well today he's come out on fire which has been nice but behind the scenes he was like oh it don't feel so good yep um so here's the thing um the
Starting point is 00:03:50 adam brooks thing uh listen you tweeted it because you knew it was going to happen and you said adam brooks is going to get claimed by like montreal or ottawa or something yeah montreal claims him yep i'm actually surprised with you know given where montreal finished last year in the waiver wire they're still in the top two-thirds of picking people up right because if you it's based on regular season finish is it not yes so they would have finished 18th it's very confusing how it works um so i guess seattle passed on them and buffalo and so on like this is the thing Montreal's top half of the league. So if Montreal had claimed him and Buffalo had claimed him,
Starting point is 00:04:29 Buffalo would get him. How is Buffalo not claiming him? They don't want to win games. I don't know. What do you want? That's also very true. With respect to Adam Brooks, do you think Adam Brooks is going to help the Sabres win any more games
Starting point is 00:04:41 than they would not have won? Well, if the answer's no, then what are you claiming them for? They're center-depth throughout the middle. They have their four. I don't think they wanted to disrupt that. Yeah, you wouldn't want to get in the way of that chemistry. sure is good hey super good also like we're a team you you gotta you gotta have a hole to fill and uh the habs do they're a little hurting down there on the fourth line the sabers have a
Starting point is 00:05:09 roster to fill and i uh although hockey twitter tries to do it each and every day you cannot do it through the waiver wire so how will the leafs lose the stanley cup after losing adam brooks because they lost Adam Brooks in fact when he eliminates them you know that's gonna happen right yeah so the Leafs are gonna be down 3-1 in the first round to Montreal wow they're gonna come back no way and uh 2013 slash 2018 Bruins styles they're gonna have the lead and choke on it and Adam Brooks with the dagger that's that's how it's gonna happen wow dude like I mean a lot of people like sort of made a big deal of this it's not that big of a deal no it sucks to lose him and he's obviously a player that can play yes yeah he's he's good like i would love to be like
Starting point is 00:05:58 leafs lose a guy who doesn't matter very much uh but no he's good he proved that with the two and a half men line last year him between thornton and spezza looked like so much fun yeah he can kill penalties he's a good player but even when that line was rolling once the guys got healthy he was kind of bounced out of the lineup which is unfortunate even when he's playing well he couldn't crack the lineup so he didn't really have a spot here that's why i'm not heartbroken over no no and it seems like in montreal he's going to get a chance to play and you know the guy uh he may only be a fringe player the rest of his career but it's still always cool you know and i think any fan base can relate to this anytime you see a guy go from like the whl
Starting point is 00:06:39 to you know the nhl through your your favorite team's organization it kind of feels cool and i can only imagine the satisfaction that keith and dubas feel because they were the guys around getting him they keith was his coach the entire time in the ahl and then brought him up to play with the big club and even in the playoffs last year yeah like i mean and keith had a lot of great things to say about him he said you know like i was happy for him because at least he said he'll get an nhl job and he said even if you you know if he had gone unclaimed we would have got to keep him which would have been great too exactly that's what's what waivers is for it's to make sure more players in the nhlpa are making as much money as possible so instead of him going
Starting point is 00:07:18 down to the minors and making an ahl salary he'll stay up with the habs and make a little bit more which is great the jump can be huge yeah that must be like i don't know if it just sucks from their perspective you draft a guy you develop him for years half a decade for half a decade you turn him into an nhl player he plays under your wing the whole the whole way through and then once he's finally ready you're like here you go other team and like oh i would i would be like that's my guy and another thing that makes it hurt from a leaf's perspective uh austin matthews i think uh good good draft pick he's okay oh yeah yeah okay good outside of him what a hunk of shit draft for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Oh, that year? Oh, it's a piece of shit. They had so many picks and garbage. Garbage. Korshkov over to Brinkett. Grundstrom, that was a decent pick. He's gone. Well, Grundstrom also isn't great,
Starting point is 00:08:16 even at the NHL level. It was, to me, I think it was the first sign that the Mark Hunter drafting thing was overrated. And it was that 2016, and I'll just remember, I went through the Leafs Nation um you know you know the nation network site and that you used to work with justin used to justin fisher used to work on um and you know they were so great that year with putting together as
Starting point is 00:08:39 they are every year with putting together who the heck the leafs are and i remember the article and it might have been jeff fayette that put it out i can't remember exactly who but it was basically like beyond the first round this is a highly questionable draft this is bad i'm going to read them to you please do all right so it's uh austin matthews first overall then we got igor korskov in the second round carl gunstrom in the second joseph wool in the third jd greenway in the third adam brooks in the fourth keaton middleton in the fourth vladimir babalev in the he finally he finally cracked the prospect pyramid this year tier five oh did he yeah because he had a hot start in the khl uh jack walker in the sixth uh nicholas matian in the
Starting point is 00:09:21 sixth and nikolai chabikin in the seventh maybe it was chabikin who made it i don't know uh by the way i'm thinking sid sixero might have had a point about the hl the memorial cup not mattering the calder cup means calder cup sorry explain that story for anybody hasn't heard it all right here's here's the marlies who oh wait oh i'm glad uh glad i caught that before i started rattling off names Here are the Toronto Marlies who won the Calder Cup. Ben Smith, gone. Andreas Janssen, gone. Chris Mueller, gone.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Miro Altonan, gone. Dmitry Timoshev, gone. Trevor Moore, gone. RIP Mikey Stevens, I'm sorry. Jeremy Bracco, gone. And good riddance. Kirby Reichel, gone. Colin Greening, gone.
Starting point is 00:10:02 Justin Holl, with the organization still. That's pretty nice. Mason Marchman, gone for frigging I forget his name. Andrew Nielsen, gone. Gasperi Kapanen, gone. Callie Rosen, gone. Vincent Loverde, gone. Martin Marincin, gone.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Adam Brooks, gone. Freddie Goat, gone. Travis Dermott, still with the organization. Wow, we're up to two. Soshnikov, gone. Lilligren, three. Renat Valiev, gone. Borgman, gone.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Engvall, still there. Kyle Bond, Rich Kloon. Okay, he's fine. He's still with the organization. We're at like half a dozen guys from that team who played at all who are still with the organization, and that was only three years ago. Maybe Sid was right. Well, if you had a couple, which you did,
Starting point is 00:10:45 It wasn't Kapanen Janssen? Yeah, like, I mean, it's not like they lost those guys for nothing. Justin Hall was on that team. So was Travis Dermott. Yeah, no, there are some. So the best of the best from that team made it. Sid was wrong. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Wow. Yeah, Sid, look at you now, stupid idiot. What are you doing with your life? Somebody sent him this clip and telling me stupid. You bum. Maybe you should call it lunch television because I fed your lunch to you. oh god fed him his lunch i hope he hears this he will i hope he hears this and he's gonna he's he might have to come on now and answer for this that impression's quite good i want to okay so
Starting point is 00:11:28 here's a couple things i want number one i want sid six zero to come on and explain that point and and we'll get into it and number two i want him to come on and he talk like sid and then you talk like sid and see who's more sick can we do that yes okay we'll do a side by side i like that um hey if you want to feel good about one thing with this adam brooks thing because obviously you know again guy that we took a lot of pride and loved and now he's in montreal adam brooks will be guaranteed as long as he is in the nhl this season at 725 000 i believe is what he makes so the way the way it works to my understanding is 725 000 divided by 200 because there's 200 days that's what i did oh yeah so what i was going to say is you get 200 days where you get paid
Starting point is 00:12:13 and then we're doing great we're no we're on the same page the number that he makes each day in the nhl and i know relative to like what jack eichel makes it doesn't seem like a whole lot but 37 50 3 750 dollars a day a day yeah that's that's unbelievable that's pretty cool but i don't know what his contract is but a lot of guys well it's like 700 000 versus 70 yeah so he has a 7 $725,000 is what he's at. What's his AHL? His AHL is $100,000. I mean, it's a good wage.
Starting point is 00:12:49 So it'd be $500 a day. Not bad. Still not bad. Yeah, it ain't the same. Not the same. No. So you know what? Be happy for him.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Good for Adam Brooks. Now let's talk about somebody who's going to make some serious cash here and deserves it. Nick Suzuki. Number one centerman for the Montreal Canadiens. And boy, you know who could use a real number one centerman right now? Who? Vegas. Oh.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Yeah. You almost wonder. you do have to wonder uh eight year 63 million dollar extension that will take him from next season to 29 30 it's such it's that's when you put it in those terms that's where we're at it's an unbelievable deal it's an unbelievable deal oh because i didn't even realize it starts next year yeah it doesn't start now oh ew oh stop so you don't like immediately why don't you like that what oh no i do like it i don't like it because he's on the haps oh okay fair it's a really good deal and uh good on uh that's very smart of the organization to sign him now because well they're
Starting point is 00:13:50 getting numbers not going down they're getting a number one center but what should be a number one center for 7.8 million dollars now the cap isn't expected to really go up until 25 26 so that gives them some assurance for the next you know three four years and then after that like it becomes a real steal for them that last half of that deal i would imagine number one centers are going to be making on average like 10 million bucks if they're any good at that point 27 year old number one centers like yeah well you would expect that a number one center should take 10 percent of your cap yeah at 100 million bucks yeah right so i i would i don't think that's outrageous to claim that they're that important if they're really good if they're really good
Starting point is 00:14:32 he's really good and him and cole caulfield are going to be a lot of fun except for when they play the leafs and then it will not be so fun it won't be fun now i was actually because i just said his number's not going down well i wonder how recently and how quickly talks picked up like when they found out carrie price wasn't going to start the season he's out for we don't know how long we already thought the montreal canadians were going to struggle a little bit yeah the team realistically could have a really tough season and the first thing to go in a lot of circumstances is offensive production yes and that's how he makes his bread and butter so i wonder if he's like let me secure the bag now let me say let me uh to answer your question about the extensions uh
Starting point is 00:15:21 chris johnson of the chris johnson show on the sdpn uh said the nick suzuki habs extension came after a couple weeks of negotiations um so it looks like it's been taking place for a few weeks there you go i also want to throw this out there uh as soon as this extension kicks in for nick suzuki he will be making 39 375 for every single day that he is in the nhl as of next season good for nick suzuki that is a honda crv every day i i really that's u.s dollars by the way i wish i could skate more like 50 000 canadian every damn day pretty sweet man man and like guys are like i don't know i don't want to i don't want to play today it's the sabers or i don't know i was out late last night and a little hungover yeah i'm bored it's march i don't want to yeah oh oh i got
Starting point is 00:16:16 to talk to the media god my life is such a burden oh man oh man oh jeez what was me am i right super woe is me i think the per day thing really puts it in perspective i think i think we need to start talking about contract because in in in soccer in uh epl they talk about what they make per week here's your when they do a salary it's like here's what he's gonna make every week and it's like a hundred thousand pounds yeah because if you have a shitty week it's like okay you just wiped your ass with a hundred thousand pounds yeah yeah and then i think it yeah it may maybe it does put more pressure on the players and they only play like once or twice a week max right so it's a little different that way as well i don't think they think about it in
Starting point is 00:16:58 those terms but like when when you talk about like oh you make seven million dollars i don't know that's when you start having stupid discussions with your friends like hey what would you do if you had seven million dollars do you think you could retire off of seven million dollars we did that with that i think i could retire off five because i would invest it but i imagine someone coming to your house and handing you a bag with fifty thousand dollars and that's every day yeah and that's the khl except you're like this fifty thousand dollars weighs less than last week's consistently allegedly um i i i wonder so it's funny that you say that uh i was watching succession last night to catch up because the new season's out next week and uh and you know
Starting point is 00:17:48 these guys are in this in this you know this fake family supposed to be like a rupert murdoch type family, big media conglomerate. And the kids are like, one guy's like, well, you know, my grandfather cut me out of the inheritance, but my mom still says he'll at least give me $5 million. Not like a, you know, not like the hundred million I was supposed to get, but at least he'll give me 5 million bucks because he, you know, he doesn't want me to starve. And the, and the other rich guys in the room were like, oh, $5 million is the worst kind of rich. You're the, you're the least rich, rich person. And then they say, they go on to talk about like, well, you can't retire on it. But then if you go to work, what kind of motivation do you have when
Starting point is 00:18:19 you got five million bucks in the bank so you're just wasting time and it was like uh i'd love to be able to talk about that man i always say that's a problem i'd like to have yeah oh man would someone let me try that but it's a great show and you should know it's real okay um that's good writing vancouver trades only you levy what do we think about this trade i think this is the the vancouver version of um adam brooks news is it actually i cannot bring myself to care let's spend an hour on it like i don't know he's he wasn't a great draft pick yeah um did not do well at the bag skate um but oh that's right he was the one he and all the larson right he was he and a few guys but like he was ekman larson was dogging it slow
Starting point is 00:19:09 you levy was lying on his side in the corner sitting on the ice and just not being able to move they trade him because he would but okay when they do those bag skates guys yeah the whole point is they expect you to collapse right that is the idea no they want your fitness to be up to the snuff when you get to training camp so when you get to training camp and you're dogging it yeah i think that was one of the clear signs that his time in vancouver was coming to an end okay yeah um nike had a version of the beep test um at uh this this world junior combine that i went to summer of 2010 so imagine the summer after canada wins gold in vancouver uh so we're going to the world junior camp in newfoundland and we're talking about the likes of like uh uh tyler
Starting point is 00:19:56 was definitely there um trying to think was ryan ellis there there was some uh jeff skinner i think would have been there so young great players yeah braden shen uh they would dock marks from players because you only got like x amount of if you don't cross the line by the beep you're out i think it was like three they would dock you if they saw you dogging it so if your fitness was so great that you were able to go slowly they would dock you because they want to see what your fitness is with intensity when you're trying your so there's no breath there's no dogging it shifts in the national hockey league right so you gotta friggin go and tyler second smashed the record and then it was beaten in the next one by i can't remember i think it was the guy who broke connor mcdavid's
Starting point is 00:20:45 collarbone actually uh i forget or his brother but uh yeah so they they will they want to see how you do at the highest level of intensity wow yes intense so the the short and the long term of jim benning's tenure in vancouver seems to be he makes moves and then he undoes them or he makes moves and then he fixes them they're they're about the same right like he that are they that much better or that much worse than when he took over but he did a thing and then he did a thing to undo the thing i will say well he he should have done it maybe a year or two ago when ulevi's value is maybe a little higher but he did something that a lot of gms are not willing to do especially until it's too late and that's take a really high draft pick and trade them for at least something
Starting point is 00:21:40 yeah something you can play yeah like juleson and lamico are at least gonna be canucks yep yeah and and and frankly with um hammond they're not sure when he'll be back he was on waivers yesterday so it's uh doesn't seem like anytime soon right still very confused by that but there's a you know too many theories out there too oh yeah and i wouldn't want to speculate in case it's something mental health related but i no idea uh you just don't know what's going on in their personal life but uh noah juleson is a right shot defenseman hey there you go he replaces travis hamming i'm telling you like it's a good move yeah i was born from a bad one i was telling you guys before this podcast i was listening to some of the vancouver reaction
Starting point is 00:22:23 and uh merrick was talking about it and there's speaking about how uh at the time benning kind of drafted for uh position instead of drafting the best player and then a lot of canucks fans right now are looking back at the players around uh you levy in that draft in the 2016 draft so i'll give you some of the names who went after you levy who went fifth overall that year in 2016 so directly after you levy is matthew kachuk clayton keller alex kneeling kneelander uh mikhail sergachev oh and then you get a little bit of a drop off but you go down then you get jake bean charlie mcavoy jacob chikrin uh logan stanley so there's so much better better better better better better better like he stamps steel if you want to keep going like there's so many
Starting point is 00:23:08 names on that list and they just whiffed real hard on the fifth overall and it's not like it's not like sergachev wasn't right there he went like eighth right he went uh one two three four spots after at ninth yeah so yeah i mean i hope he's changed that because um i thought sergachev was supposed to be the highest ranked eml draft wasn't he or one of them there's always a debate yeah So I just, yeah, I mean, listen, there used to be a Lionel versus Matthews debate, like who should the Leafs take? But that draft, if we remember with Lionel versus Matthews, that was supposed to be the home run draft.
Starting point is 00:23:39 Everybody's supposed to get a guy in that top 10 because it's so stacked. And Vancouver's the one team out of that top 10 who really whiffed on it. So is it time for Canucks Army to do a GM versus a potato? Oh, man. So let's bring this up because this was when the analytics debate was really raging. Yeah, this is so good. so go ahead i don't remember who wrote it i'm going to assume thomas drance um he had this robot called sham sharon in honor of cam sharon who also used to write for the uh canucks army
Starting point is 00:24:13 website and currently works in the leafs analytics department um and basically they they had a an algorithm or something draft whoever the highest scoring major junior player was at the time so that's amazing so there's no defenseman in there basically not necessarily but like yeah yeah um it would it would leave them till the later rounds it would exclude college players it would exclude europe and the algorithm kicked real life's ass and that's mike gillis was it mike gillis or dave no it would have been mostly mike gillis yes um because benning what was it 2014 yeah yeah oh my god yeah he's been there since 2014 i know i know oh my god but the current canucks are different because their first round draft picks outside of your levy have actually
Starting point is 00:25:08 kicked ass yes um it's outside of that it's hog lander and well i think and and that's i think it's you know we do give jim credit uh jim benning an inordinate amount of credit for drafting but you know is it time to revisit that it's not the greatest could be worse it's not i mean a lot of teams don't even hit on those that sort of sums up his tenure though not the greatest could have been worse yeah like so far i mean listen petterson is an incredible player uh horvat i don't even know did he draft horvat or would it have been because that was the cory schneider trade he did okay so they acquired the ninth overall pick for cory schneider right and then quinn that's a banger of a trade zolkin yeah not dickinson not a lot of not too many draftees in
Starting point is 00:25:59 the forwards quinn hughes obviously just the important ones right yeah yeah and jack rathbone are the only two drafted defensemen and they did draft thatcher demko although i'm not really sure when probably a long time ago um i don't remember so he's like he's adequate like i know we give him crap but he's adequate he's a he's a mediocre general manager but i just feel like you're forgetting uh besser yes better oh sorry better yeah how did i miss that dude you've been there but i want to see what the canucks can do with what they have and new eyes and i don't think there's anything wrong with that like they have the parts to be a good team for years to come and he's gonna be the guy to do it all right you can try i mean it hasn't worked the previous
Starting point is 00:26:52 seven years but i don't know go ahead and try you wonder why ownership has so much confidence in benning or really any any gm spot in canada where nobody's getting fired like if you look same situation in calgary and you're like he's not even the longest tenured one no by the way I was listening to the CJ show this morning, which is already out of date because they didn't have Nick Suzuki. So bummer for them. No, I'm kidding.
Starting point is 00:27:19 No, but the thing was, one of the names CJ brought up for Jack Eichel, and you had brought up Anaheim before, which I thought, why would they do that? They suck. But then I guess they suck less than Buffalo, so that would be nice. And it's a warmer climate.
Starting point is 00:27:32 But another team, Calgary Flames, snooping around for Jack Eichel. You got to make a big splash. You want to keep your job. right i mean you talk about someone who may actually be done well yeah well okay so then if you're kevin adams your your ask has to start with matt kachuk right you're not taking sean monahan and noah hannifin i suggested at the trade deadline johnny could draw but johnny's on a no trade now exactly too late it could be and he might want to go there and and he might he he's
Starting point is 00:28:07 a rare example of a guy who might actually want to go there. Because he's from New Jersey. And that would be in western New York. There were rumors with him in the Flyers. I would definitely take the other trade you proposed. Monaghan. Monaghan and Hannafin? Yeah. I just don't think that they would fit into what Calgary
Starting point is 00:28:22 or sorry, what Buffalo would need. Don't care. That sounds like two good players that Buffalo doesn't have. Flip them. Oh, okay. I don't even know if they have no trade classes. Are we moving on to Eichel, by the way? Well, we can. but i um well here's here's what we know and this is according to cj from the show um he talked
Starting point is 00:28:42 about how that he doesn't think that the deal is going to get done till like may and we do know that um we do know that that uh they are sharing more of the medical records and that some teams are comfortable with the disc replacement some teams are not yeah so that's taking them out of the race for for him and then beyond all that um if they do do the trade now or within this season um the sabers objectively will get less than they would have got this summer if they had just given the medical records over and not played hardball with this they would have their package and it will be better than what they have or what they have available to them currently what they will have off-season trades are always you always get more of a haul because people your salary gap
Starting point is 00:29:30 doesn't count everybody thinks they're in line for the stanley cup your rosters aren't set so you're experimenting but now in season how are you going to make a jack eichel deal when you need so many pieces off somebody's roster when they're like we're playing games and they just send you everything the dude by then will have not played hockey in god knows how long uh hockey in a non coveted environment in god knows how long like now we're talking about will he ever be the same again now there's some question marks like oh i don't know we'll have to see but like he wouldn't be the first player to take significant time off get surgery and then come back and be fine and if you trade for eichel in say like november december you're you're crossing your fingers he's
Starting point is 00:30:13 there for the playoffs like you don't know what that timeline is so why why give up all the pieces off your roster now and then you don't get anything back for like four months how do you play like that the logic that we've seen in the buffalo sabers uh with eichel over the last week week and a half since the leonard tweets shows how illogical they behaved like oh yeah we'll release medicals kevin adams is open to conditional pixen ship yes which is also a new thing which he wasn't open right like i i don't like doing this as much as i used to any idiot on the internet could have told you to do that are you stupid are you are you genuinely are you done or are you in control are you done are you in control no you should have done this are they stupid well he well so
Starting point is 00:31:02 here's the the thing is is that because any nhl team in case you're and let me give a context to this and then i want to throw to you guys here the context here is that any team that's acquiring jack eichel is acquiring risk because we're not sure if he's ever going to play again not 100 sure now that's why the conditional picks come in because it's like well if he plays x amount of games gets x amount of points then these these draft picks vest right they become real i'm just saying and where you guys were going with this is i'm wondering if kevin adams is actually in charge he's not oh you mean of this deal right and of the team because it seems like whenever the right thing should happen it's only after what seems like ownership relents took months and months
Starting point is 00:31:45 of getting a thumbs up from the two people above him to do these things he i'm 100 sure kevin adams if he was in charge he would have done this months ago like this would have been done during the summer but he didn't he had to beg and plead to get the thumbs up from people to be like hey okay now move forward with this and now he's got it so now we're seeing these things how can the organization move forward like so this is just gonna every time someone talks about the buffalo sabers is going to be about this well it's not going to be about wins and losses here's what would make you feel good not gonna be a lot of the first thing i'm looking at uh i'm looking at calgary's roster here maybe you do take a hannifin or an anderson rasmus anderson
Starting point is 00:32:25 both signed to longer term deals 24 years old and maybe an elias lindholm there's no no known trade clause no because everybody else is on a limited you can go through any nhl players and if i they're i'm like oh those are reasonable players i'm like yeah do it at this point it's just get do the thing right make the trade for guys who are warm bodies are going to play on your team because you need to move forward like you're saying steve just move forward with your franchise you can even just get picks that might be the easiest thing is conditional picks a whole bunch a whole yeah and like a wild amount of conditions remember the bernier trade with leafs no they they traded them was it to detroit i can't remember who they traded the ducks and
Starting point is 00:33:07 there were four conditions on on like one pick that's how it should be because we don't know jack eichel's future so why not just get a whole bunch of crazy first round if i'm the flames tree living is clearly going for it so if i'm the flames i'll just be like i'll give you all of our picks this draft like like who cares well that's one where ownership might step in and be correct all they have no here's what they have they've got round one uh second from florida in their own second and nothing till the fifth round and then nothing till the seventh round. Let's spread it out a little. You got
Starting point is 00:33:40 a couple years worth of draft picks. If Eichel does this, the pick is top ten protected. If Eichel does this, it's not. If Eichel does this, it's two seconds instead of a first. If any moron could have told you, you could have spent the whole summer focusing
Starting point is 00:33:56 on that. And guess what you have? Like Casey Middlestad on the top line. like what there was a two-month period where there's nothing going on where you could just brainstorm trades on your piece of paper you know it's from your fucking cottage yeah and dumbest organization in the sport if you're a sabre genuinely terrible you have every right to be mad oh yeah every right to be mad that's that's the part that was the dagger for me is
Starting point is 00:34:22 like either you hang on to him till may or you accept less and by the way just to throw one at you um tampa bay 18 million over the cap nobody on ltir this year wouldn't it be funny if brent zebrick's on ltr okay well there you go vincent mccaffell yeah oh yeah he is remember we did that during the season previous oh yes so anaheim makes some sense because they're not gonna do a damn thing this year what if tampa did tell me tampa's not made that phone call i don't know how it works that's the thing it doesn't matter it's tampa he's an ltir i don't need him till the playoffs we're tampa go get healthy get ready for the playoffs we're gonna kucharov this why wouldn't you if you're breeze wall now one one thing i do remember cj it was
Starting point is 00:35:07 either cj or frege said about a month ago is it's not like this is a condition that gets better by uh leaving it no like you're wasting time no he's got a herniated disc man like his he's got he's got i don't know i'm going to explain this like a guy who's not a doctor but basically he's get a he's he's got a nerve in his neck that's getting smushed by the day right yeah and you might have seen that video of him hanging out with the bruins in boston and he's at a red sox game and he's having a great old time yeah i've had a great time at baseball games too it doesn't mean his neck doesn't hurt and that is what gets lost in all this it's it's beyond asinine how the buffalo saber sabers have handled it from terms of trying to make your hockey team good the fucking
Starting point is 00:35:51 guy is in pain every day that should be the main story the nhlpa what what do you do all day genuinely what do you do all day the most useless organization in the world what do you do why isn't this done yesterday he even fired his agent to try to get this process moving right and there's been progress yeah there has yeah and there's been progress why because the kid did something it's nothing from the organization and or nor from the pa who they also met with and how typical jack eichel has to do the whole fucking thing himself does that not sum up his entire sabers tenure hard to disagree with that useless go get another yellow jersey you fucking i i really do no they're
Starting point is 00:36:42 a waste of all our time go back down to 31 teams they're a waste of all our time and they shouldn't be they should not be that should be a red hot hockey city absolutely and they were for a long time i should hate the sabers goal horn again instead of never hearing it i like their yellow jersey with the sabers across the the waist the buffa slug no i hated it it's terrible they've got some badgers oh the black red and white sabers i used to i used to hear that goal horn in my nightmares i hated them more than the habs i i hated i as a kid i hated those sabers more than i've ever hated the boston bruins dominator oh that mother yeah yeah run hell of a run unbelievable hell of a run and now they're just an irrelevant bag of garbage yep it's a shame
Starting point is 00:37:32 it's a shame they don't need to be and you put them in the hands of anybody with any kind of competence they won't be in a millisecond but until then well and this is the thing too right what's so funny about the saber situation in a very not funny way is that the nhl is the parody is so unbelievable to have a team this bad it has to be extremely poorly managed bad teams really stand out they do and it's rare it's like one or two maybe a year you got 20 teams who got a shot at the playoffs sure 100 it might even be more yeah i think it's more 25 yeah i mean we're talking about even the sharks and kings made a run of it last year yeah yeah not really the the kings had a great start cranes had a great start they were in it all the i read you that
Starting point is 00:38:17 stat about the sharks 3 11 and 2 in their last whatever that is 17 or whatever man they got like right up to the deadline they're like maybe maybe maybe no no we're not no we're not um the yeah so there's listen um i think there's at least two really good teams one in the central and one of the metro they're gonna miss the playoffs this year oh yeah so there's a lot of like you know so for the sabers to be this bad like as much as people laugh it's and they are comically bad it's tragic because this is a league that literally prevents you from being too good or too bad and you still found a way they're gonna i mean they might win some games because they're gonna face a starting NHL goalie like 20
Starting point is 00:38:58 times this year. Maybe. That's a rest game. What do you mean? Against Sabres? Everybody's going to be playing their other guys. It's a rest game. Oh, yeah. Yeah, no one's playing their starting goaltender. Call a putch. Throw them in every game. This is a rest game.
Starting point is 00:39:13 And if you lose, you should be bag-skated until you levy on the ice. Seriously. Yeah. The over-under on 32 thoughts for how many Sabres wins they're gonna have was 16 ah
Starting point is 00:39:31 I don't know I'm just how how many ways can you say they're irrelevant pieces of shit 16 wins I gotta think about that I thought it'd be my mind says 10 no it's never that bad well unless it's the thrashers or the
Starting point is 00:39:47 capitals or the 92 senators the capitals have the record right they have 8 I think 8 wins is the least amount ever the 92 senators had 10 and guess what if they get up to 25 wins fart who cares i mean go away i'm hitting the over go away yo i i do hope there's at least one good feel good story for sabers fans out of that it's been a rough road we've had two years of covid and then you know and then the team just sucks like at least as leaf fans we're upset because our team got bounced in the first round again imagine being a sabers fan it's the last time they even made the playoffs
Starting point is 00:40:25 i have no idea like was it have they made it post the last lockout i don't think so no i don't think so man they were unreal i want to say like 06 07 crazy good crazy good good final four i think with briere 2010 2010 2010 2010 11 season they lost in the first round the previous season as well the 09 10 season they lost in the first round so they haven't made it in over a decade and there's been a lockout since then and the cap has been completely restructured since then yeah this will be a decade not making the playoffs yeah now given they had a rough ownership situation for part of that i'll give them that but this teardown started in 14 and i remember when they when they did it they kept like being like we're tearing it down and then they'd
Starting point is 00:41:16 sign matt molson to a six-year contract and then they'd say we're tearing it down and then they went and signed kyle akpozo another one of john devars's wingers now kyle had some bad luck and he's going to be playing this year but some bad luck with health so that's a little bit different but yeah at the end of the day like i mean even the rebuilds themselves one day somebody's going to do a documentary on this and it like it would make a great espn 30 for 30 because so many of those are so tragic and i think that this would be perfect because it's like what what is this rebuild what what was it ever this i think we should all be thankful that in 2014 it didn't work out entirely for buffalo and that mcdavid went to edmonton the strip down yeah they they
Starting point is 00:41:57 nailed it they nailed the tanking and then they didn't the lottery balls didn't fall their way and they got eichel instead of mcdavid oh and i remember who was the gm at the time with the glasses who was their gm and he was really upset was it murray i don't know he was so upset i remember him saying that and i remember talking about that with you guys on the show at the time being like i don't know what he's upset about the best you were gonna get was 20 and that's and that's how you start your tenure with the sabers hi guys oh yeah i'm pissed off that i ended up with an incredible hockey player do you think jack eckle's ever forgotten that no that they didn't want him would you have this whole that this whole thing has been you've been
Starting point is 00:42:33 the second choice yeah you weren't even the plan no and now they're giving you the franchise you're the captain but it was never meant to be you i would never forget that that's i wouldn't want to play for buffalo you when you put it in like that yeah connor mcdavid destroyed the buffalo sabers as a teenager exactly before he was ever in the national hockey league listen the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago the second best time is now but when this finally resolves itself never forget that it was eichel and his agent who finally got out the shovel oh man it's gotta end crazy i'm sick of it i'm sick of it crazy um so let's move on to something else uh the rangers the new york rangers lots of stuff going on here so i think i think i could
Starting point is 00:43:16 end up there what do you mean you could end up where i was joking i just wanted to keep it going um first off uh breaking news as of the start of the show uh elliot friedman reporting that um rangers have made batali kratsov available for trade and his agent has been given permission to speak with other clubs to help facilitate a move that's a bit um odd so tell me why that's odd tell me why you say that's odd because players get mad that they don't crack or didn't crack an nhl roster all the time but this was like two pretty high profile ones with the rangers and not a very high uh long amount of time because vitaly kravtsov and also leah sanderson right yes right yeah no i don't remember if he was a first rounder he was a decently high pick
Starting point is 00:43:59 second or third round i think uh crab saw much higher yeah um and it's this got to be a bummer for rangers fans because i mean part of the reason you're so stoked on the team isn't because you think they're going to be great this year they might make the playoffs yeah might make a little bit of noise they'll definitely be exciting to watch but why you're stoked as a rangers fan is they're gonna be really good it's just a matter of when right heidel your goalies caco who is yet to even bloom lefreniere who's yet to even bloom add this guy to the mix adam fox just want the norris keep forgetting about that yeah but he wasn't really drafted in or i think calgary yeah okay i didn't even mention panarin zabana jab yeah oh why'd they give zabana jab all that
Starting point is 00:44:51 money stairs it's advantageous numbers oh like honestly one of the most underrated scores in the league oh yeah whenever maybe a bit streaky but i see the new york rangers make a move from like since june to now i remember that they promoted their ahl gm slash assistant gm chris jury and all of a sudden made him president in gm and that we got to see how he builds this team because the team that's very good all those guys you just you just named were not his guys he didn't he didn't sign he didn't draft and none of them so is chris jury a good gm we don't know that we won't know for a year and a half exactly so i'm interested to see how all of these new moves play out like is he is he making the right calls getting reeves is is uh putting um his him on the
Starting point is 00:45:41 trade market the right call i don't know can i know if i trust chris jury he's playing by the let me do a little trivia with you here okay mika zabina jad is 28 years old he has been traded once oh i i know the trade okay so it's horrendous this could be the worst trade besides sod for panarin it's one of the most underrated fleecings in recent memory and no one talks about this this is one of the worst trades oh they do you will ever do they sense fans do oh man so zabina jad was an ottawa senator he was drafted sixth overall i didn't know it was that high six overall okay who was he traded for steve i believe the trade was a bandage ad and a second for derrick broussard and a seventh oh no no what year uh 2015 but here's the fun part um uh and this is where i feel bad
Starting point is 00:46:34 for broussard because this is not like exactly totally fair but he was broussard was coming off of a 60 point season 58 point season two six and zabina jad he was a hell of a deadline slightly younger 51 points so you you essentially got a guy with a few more seasons who was scoring the exact same rate of points but here's the problem he goes to ottawa the next season he gets a he has a 39 point season and then a 38 point season and the most he's ever had since then is 32 and that was two years ago in on the island during the covid shortened season uh meanwhile zabinijad um five goals in a game yeah and he's had the last three seasons 74 75 and 50 points and 56 games and by the way his 75 point season came in a 57 game season because he was injured
Starting point is 00:47:27 and then the covid shortened year same year 1920 like there there was a great terrible deal i saw this graph it was leading up to the covid shutdown and it was this three horse race that there was uh fascinating to watch it's matthews and pasternak and ovechkin's in there and it's basically a three horse race and then right up until the shutdown like the last month here comes the man holy shit yeah he just rockets up the thing he's one of the best goal scorers in the league yes yes um could have been a send now uh was uh the rangers also announced their assistant captains because they do not have a captain they got six of them six alternate captains i'm gonna name them for you okay it's too many so me because of being a chad
Starting point is 00:48:17 obviously chris crider artemi panarin jake truba uh hang on here i'm just looking at adam fox nils lundquist nils lundquist keandre miller just naming oh i was like no no no i'm kidding jake truba ryan strone barque gujo i wanted to go and see how far down the roster i could get without i forgot keandre miller in my uh youth conversation holy smokes that team who was the last rangers captain and when who was the last rangers captain to wear the c the actual c was it was it dan boyle it was not dan boyle wasn't mark stall wasn't mark stall was it a defenseman it was they like to have defensemen
Starting point is 00:49:17 his captains well so why am i bad at this dan gerardi no oh further back who the further back than dan gerardi uh that's why it's so crazy what year uh that's what you're gonna have to guess after you get the name oh man and it was a defenseman a defenseman and it wasn't dan boyle and it wasn't Mark Stahl and it wasn't Dan Girard. Mark Stahl would have been my guess. That would have been a good call, too. Good call, Mark Stahl. Mark Messier.
Starting point is 00:49:53 Not Mark Messier, no. Nick Kiprios. Not Nick, no. He was captain for a solid 20 years there. Henrik Lundqvist. Oh, Ryan McDonough. Ryan McDonough. Nice.
Starting point is 00:50:02 What year? I mean, 2015? When was he traded? To the Lightning? 2017? Close, 2018. so the last time they had a captain was at least three probably four seasons oh my god you had me picturing like them against the habs in 2014 who the hell was on that team
Starting point is 00:50:25 that would have been mcdonough's first year as captain oh wow so his he was captain from 14 to 18 obviously traded i believe at the trade deadline was he not and uh yeah yeah so anyway long story short ranger fans are like can you just name a fucking captain please like it's not and that's the thing a like the responses to all of this are just like can you guys please you don't need six assistants and i know the whole yeah reporters always downplay this and i understand why and it's because they're in the dressing room every day okay usually what it should be is a captain and two assistants or a captain and three assistants right right but if everybody is a leader nobody is leading six assistant captains are you kidding me and i
Starting point is 00:51:08 Listen, all of them may have a leadership role, but basically what the Rangers did is they went on their cap-friendly page and they said, who makes the most money here? Great, we'll slap an A on them. Is that really it? Pretty much. I don't know. Except for Ryan Strom.
Starting point is 00:51:20 I don't know how much Ryan Strom makes, but Benar and Kreider, Zibinijad, Trouba, Strom, Goudreau, those are all the big money names, are they not? Jesse, me, in the locker room, I'm sure there's a leader. Well, then. All right, name him captain. Slap a C on him. He hasn't earned it.
Starting point is 00:51:35 No, you got to have, okay, for a couple of years, like i got it with the leafs after finuff left it was like you gotta somebody's gotta earn this i get it but the rangers are actually good they're gonna be good this year and they've got oh the toronto was literally for a year or two they're void of any stars right after the finuff thing and the kessel was gone there was nobody to name captain it was like it was bad it was like grabner like who are you gonna name but then you got guys coming in that were like oh these guys are gonna and i think the leafs actually waited a season too long to name their captain probably in hindsight So it should have been Morgan Riley.
Starting point is 00:52:07 And it should have been the year before Tavares came. That's what I think should have happened. That's my take. And I'm a fan of Tavares' captain, but I think they should have named Riley earlier. Riley was very young. Riley was like 22, 23 at the time. Riley's still a young guy. Well, it didn't stop Steve Yazerman from taking it when he was, what, 20, 19?
Starting point is 00:52:28 Yeah, because Morgan Riley is Steve Yazerman. Steve Yazerman. That's the same thing. I see your argument, but have you ever considered the exception? The best case scenario. No, I think it should have been Morgan Rielly. I think it should have been Morgan Rielly. I think he was too young at the time.
Starting point is 00:52:42 The team was too inexperienced. I can't hate John. Now, for those, and I don't hate John as a captain. He's a great captain. Why do you hate John? But the difference there is you guys nailed it. Age and experience. The Rangers have that.
Starting point is 00:52:56 Name a captain. Who's captain? I don't know. Okay, of this group, if I have to send somebody over, over to argue with the ref who am i sending they have i'm sure they have a guy then he's the captain crap then what's the other guy doing what's true but doing also arguing but from farther away okay the rangers are going to send out their argument line you imagine the argue with the ref line that's a pretty strong line actually good if you pull the goalie panarin uh criders abanajad
Starting point is 00:53:22 truba strong gutro that's a pretty good line i don't pull the goal i don't hate that so pull the goalie and we're all arguing with the ref adam i don't i don't know about this one i don't i i think that rangers need a damn captain it's ridiculous come on chris drury let's go chris drury former captain now gm yeah he names himself president as well is also let's not yeah he's president let's not forget james dolan owns this team and he put chris drury in charge do i trust james dolan no a lot of owner talk today and they're all wildly out of their kind of minds well let's get to ottawa sure what do you want to talk about with ottawa no just owners out of them off oh i was like what did they do now they're not signing the guy they should just give
Starting point is 00:54:06 whatever he wants well i i is that not wild and crazy i got a lot of messages i'd be curious to hear senators fans and i wanted to get your take on this so brady kachuk people are like you guys all think he's matthew kachuk people outside of the ottawa market and they're like and the people that have been messaging me are like he's not he's gonna get massively overpaid and ottawa's going to regret it what pay him for the three years how is that a regret but like you're at the floor like it's a regret if it's if it hamstrings you yeah yeah which is not a concern for them right because they're never going to spend there so he was at a he scored 36 points in 56 games the year before 71 games 44 points and then his rookie year 45 and 71 45 points in
Starting point is 00:54:54 71 games sure people are saying well this guy's like a 0.60 point like per game player in terms of points why would you pay him seven or eight million dollars because of intangibles and face washing i think it's you have a guy who wants to be in ottawa you might as well just keep him here for three years why not just do it right he wants to be in ottawa is michigan in ottawa did we did we burn down the white house and take michigan jesse we did actually and gave it back yeah we did own the white house we did and we owned michigan by the way people forget that i didn't know that yeah it's not a thing people at the close of the war of 1812 that was in british territory we completely held michigan it drives and then the americans always like to talk about
Starting point is 00:55:39 the battle of new orleans which is such a pointless stupid battle and the war had already been was already over by then but they hadn't come back you ever heard of that no no so so back then if you're fighting a battle in in north america it takes and you have you're like you know what we'd like to resolve this send a diplomat well it takes a couple months to get there and then it's like well we got to sort out the deal well we can't do that here we got to do that back in england so everybody come on back we're gonna go and so meanwhile they're doing this people are fighting so they they sign the peace treaty and it's retroactive to the day that they signed it but then they have to get the peace treaty across to north america it takes a couple months to do
Starting point is 00:56:16 that so then it so the battles continued they just kept going until and they're like hey we've been at peace for a couple months so they could have just tweeted it yeah well yeah anyway that's why didn't they tweet it stutzla josh norris yeah uh batherson yeah shabbat kachuk is five guys who is a really great core sure is and you should just pay the damn seven over three or six over three or whatever it is to just have that core for five years what is the number what's the number what's the good number i think so the the sticking point is the years that's what we keep that's what cj reported that's what elliott report that's what we're hearing here so it's not the number so it's whatever it is is the numbers just give it to them because like steve just said they're
Starting point is 00:57:01 at the floor so the number doesn't matter you're gonna have 15 million dollars in cap space regardless well they might make a huge move for jack eichel guys you gotta but if the sticking point is the years just do the thing for three years and have this that those five guys are just named for three years and see where it does because that's a great young team that if they get goaltending they can sneak into the playoffs and make some damage how frustrating is being a sense that well it's very frustrating how frustrating is it being pierre dorian it's right look at all the good shit i've done and you don't get to enjoy the fruits of your labor because you have this and i said it last episode what are senators fans paying for if not to see
Starting point is 00:57:38 brady kachuk i know that everybody think well well he objectively could be overpaid who cares if it's 500 grand or a million dollars who cares exactly that point and and if i am a sens fan i'm no offense to drake batherson but he's not the guy that's making selling the jersey it's stutzla it's it's shabbat and it's kachuk that's it those three and it's gonna be norris and batherson sure but i mean like the crew how overpaid will it be by the end of the deal probably not probably not much you need the deal to like get over the floor today no no they got tyler ennis so they did right and the the three years i think is because that's when they expect the cap to have the little bit of the spike the next time so that's when kachok wants to
Starting point is 00:58:17 be a ufa that's good news for pedersen and hughes as well that's i mean they don't want that you've done all the right things you've done all the right things keep the guys i know a bunch of leaf fans saying oh just pay them the money but like i mean the leaf should have paid them the money they oh no not even they should have they did pay them the money they did it's way too late yeah yeah they could have had kneelander at the number they haven't met right now that number was on the table in september and they just decided to wait to december because we're gonna win this and then they lost and guess what you've lost forever now yeah and then you got to do a big pr thing where you go i'd rather give zach hyman away than take anything less than a second rounder
Starting point is 00:59:01 from the edmonton oilers which yes that's a good precedent to establish but there was a pre-established precedent that you lose negotiations consistently hey yeah who said that who at this who's sitting at this table was all over that me you're at that table it's a different table i'm just saying it's a different day i'm upset i'm upset about that by the way it was like a third round pick they were gonna get wasn't it for hyman uh no it was the oilers offered like a sixth. Oh, and the Leafs wanted a fifth or something. No, they wanted a second. They wanted a second round pick. Dubas would rather have nothing
Starting point is 00:59:34 than have his value drop. Nothing he got. Well, he got what he wanted. I would rather have no cardigan than a cardigan not on a certain thread
Starting point is 00:59:50 count. God damn it. I'm Kyle Dubas. Now he's naked. His cardigan collection is actually pretty spectacular. That negotiation with uh what the hell's his name again ken holland ken holland that negotiation with ken holland is our shelbyville turnip juice and the heroes of the leafs rose up and wouldn't take a sixth round pick from the oilers now let's all celebrate with a warm glass of no draft pick at all turn up juice turn up juice a warm glass of turnip juice anyway yeah brady kitchuck they should sign him and he's not going to be thursday i think is the sun's first game so they've already
Starting point is 01:00:31 lost like brady kachuk's not in the lineup you they've lost you guys want to die a little did he just sign no oh okay what at least practice okay okay so who's who's not playing tonight matthews okay tomorrow who else isn't playing tomorrow mccabe yeah who else if you sit too Tavares, I'm going to come across the table. Not Tavares, but maybe Mitch Marner. Mitchie? No Mitchie? According to Kristen Shelton, we don't know. Wayne Simmons tripped up Mitch Marner at Leafs practice
Starting point is 01:01:03 and Marner went down hard. He stuck around for a bit, but after having a chat with Sheldon Keefe, he's now leaving with a trainer. I just want a moment's peace. I just want one moment's peace. Ever. In my life. somebody's got a picture i'm so i think he's fine he's probably fine but one of the best
Starting point is 01:01:31 tweets i've ever seen is this guy uh hoskell i guess and it's just carlton in front of a rainbow and it just says i want to die oh you haven't seen that one before i've never seen that before in my life can you please send that to me it's my favorite leafs meme and i can never find it i'll text it to you right now oh my god that is funny i i uh that is the kind of shit where okay i hope he's okay too and you know what like the thing was and we've mentioned a couple times this summer guy had a rough year leafs gave it to him really hard leaf fans gave it to him really hard we were hard on him in the playoffs but again we didn't attack his character or do shit to his house or whatever happened this summer and i think you know i think at the end of the day
Starting point is 01:02:17 as we said before, you cheer for the fucking Leafs. Cheer for the player. Cheer for the player. So someone asked me a question for my Leaf preview and it was I want to ask you about that after. Yeah. So who are you watching this year? And I said
Starting point is 01:02:33 Matthews and Marner. I know you want a cute little Michael Bunting. I think he might actually challenge for the Calder or something like that. He might have a 20 goal season. 20 goals. Shit on your 20 goals. Matthews and Marner should get that in their sleep. They're the superstars as the leafs go they go they had a great regular season the leafs had a great regular
Starting point is 01:02:53 season they had a shit playoffs leafs had a shit playoffs that's how it goes that's who i'm interested in and game one neither of them great start so you did the it's a like a 17 minute leaf season preview uh you were yelling at the very beginning i haven't seen it at all okay so uh One, can you tell everyone what you're yelling about? Two. I don't remember. Two. Fine, then.
Starting point is 01:03:18 Just two. Can you hit on the main points you hit on in the video without giving away the video? What are the main takeaways you're looking at for this Leafs season? They're good. Like, they're good. There's no reason to assume they should miss the playoffs. I don't think it'll be a walk, but they're good. the and we should all just try to get through the season and not talk about goddamn april
Starting point is 01:03:43 in october because okay truly genuinely they can't make it up to the fan base until the playoffs but there's a lot of days in between now and the playoffs so let's just enjoy it cheer for the leafs cheer for mitch marner cheer for austin matthews cheer for them to win games when they win games in october hooray in october and when they win games in november hooray in november and we'll worry about the yeah we'll try to win it yeah they will try to win a but in april or may however it lands i like that message to the fan base that's a good one it's it was a bit to me it was a bit to yourself it was just into a camera yeah but like i think sometimes when when steve talks to himself he is talking to a lot of us you know in in leafs nation and if
Starting point is 01:04:31 you're wondering if you're outside of leafs nation you're not a fan of the leafs this is steve steve's fatalism is how we think and as we always say on this show um when people say yeah what about the leafs like when we criticize another team um our thing is yeah we're hardest on them we're leaf fans no we're not just suddenly aware we haven't won anything since 67 why did no one tell me right oh no i'm shocked by the way the leafs have won a stanley cup since their last vesna trophy win whose last vesna winner the leafs won a stanley cup in the time in between the last time the leafs won the vesna trophy lauren shabbat who do you think who do you actually think won the i think we've all won
Starting point is 01:05:20 no it was uh it was a heck of a goaltending tandem saw chuck and bauer nice oh right split it they'd gone off three straight cup wins and they didn't win in 65 and then you know they won again in 67 but um but yeah that was 1965 was the last vesna trophy winner for the toronto maple leaves wow uh i was trying to look up it's taking too long i was trying to look up my top videos of all time they're all leaf losses i know so that was your message to the fan base yep uh what was your takeaways from the roster that you hit on in the video it's a good roster the the defense is basically untouched except for bogosian it looked like what what did what did the practice lines say uh from kristen shelton is lilligren gonna play tomorrow i'll look it up
Starting point is 01:06:07 because it kind of looks like he might um by the way i also want to throw this out there sorry on the marner thing go ahead as soon as the suzuki thing was announced marner started trending again I know. You've got to fucking knock it off, guys. Guys, we've got to stop. Stop it. It's not even necessarily Leaf fans, though. No, it probably is just other fan bases trolling at this point.
Starting point is 01:06:23 Yeah. Leaf lines of practice. Yeah. Richie Tavares-Marner. Oops. Maybe not so much. No, no, just the pairs. The deep pairs.
Starting point is 01:06:31 Oh, Riley Brody, Muzzin Hall, Sanding Lillard. Oh. So, Dermott may be a little hurt. Less than 100%. um that is a fascinating thing for me it might finally be lilligren time which is a thing you want to happen i i want to see it i want lilligren to play in games where there are six defensemen and not seven you know uh sandin might sit some games there might be some nights of dermot lilligren dermot sandin sandy lilligren i don't i don't know um but like the fourth line is a
Starting point is 01:07:12 fourth line their third line is um focused which it's so rarely it hasn't been for a very long time yep um they have two number one centers and tomorrow they're going down to one what was them um they should they should be just fine they should be just oh and two very capable goalies this gave me pause though because uh did a fantasy draft and james myrtle took freddie anderson and we made fun of him and then i started thinking about how the carolina hurricanes have a tandem of freddie anderson and auntie ranta who only played 36 games last year and i very much like a philadelphia security guard thought what are you nuts and then i looked at the leafs tandem of campbell marazic who played 34 oh and i'm just gonna not think about that damn i didn't think
Starting point is 01:08:09 about that i'm gonna push that to the back of my mind where i keep the dark and scaries and not think about it it's not a thing you're all gonna forget about it too you all forgot about it forgot about what exactly you're not gonna think about it michael hutchinson cleared waivers but don't think about it that's good just don't think about it that's good yeah i mean he adds like another five or ten games to that right oh why why would he ever 44 he doesn't need to if they're both healthy don't think about it don't think about it why would you think about it that they played less than half of the games they're going to play this season why would you think about that you shouldn't don't think about it all right great i'm glad we're in agreement that we're
Starting point is 01:08:54 not going to think about it god uh seattle kraken situation i'm pulling this directly from Daily Faceoff and at Ryan S. Clark. Callie Ornkroak will not play. Johansson could exit protocol and play. Don Skoy, McCann, Oleksiak all have a chance to play, but 2D determined this afternoon.
Starting point is 01:09:15 This is how they skated yesterday when the COVID-19 news broke. I know for their first game, Schwartz, Wenberg, Eberle, Eberle, excuse me, Donato, Geeky, Tanev, Bastian, Sheehan, Appleton. So, they had to bring out some guys.
Starting point is 01:09:31 Where's the fourth line? Yeah, they didn't even have that. Oh. Oh. They did. Bar Boulay. Oh, yeah, they got him. Was claimed off waivers.
Starting point is 01:09:42 Oh, they took him? Yeah. Oh, good. Yeah, that was a good one. Alex True and Cole Lynn were recalled. That will give them the 12 forwards they need if needed. And I think Chris was bringing up on the CJ show that the, what is it? there could be a potential situation when the nhl reinstates the taxi squad yes seems like a
Starting point is 01:10:02 good choice that was very interesting well you can't that can't happen yeah that's half a dozen guys yeah yeah it can't happen yeah yeah so anyway that's the uh that's the word on the street and lastly i don't know if you guys have seen this the la kings have put out their new alternate uniform and it is sex i was it's really really good i deeply hate the helmet the silver helmet you don't like the silver bullet boo to the silver bullet you know do you like the vegas gold helmet no i do not why is that is that does it offend your i only buy a black or a white car yes that's literally what how the nhl helmet system works right now mine is blue so you or a dark blue car yes uh no man it's shiny for god's sake i like that stop it glitz and glamour it's las angeles
Starting point is 01:10:50 baby i'm not vegas baby yeah fine it's i'm i like that vegas and la are embracing we're obnoxious like i kind of like that um i'll live okay what do i the jersey sex like you said really good i could live with the helmet if they got rid of the gloves what's wrong with the gloves the white gloves trying to make white gloves the thing white gloves are great black gloves with the white jersey oh come on no you're trying too hard steve i am not trying too white gloves they look spectacular that's leaf's legend alex i follow by the way in that photo i wanted him so bad at the deadline i'm surprised they used i follow by the way in this and not like i don't know drew dowdy well maybe he wasn't available okay maybe they wanted
Starting point is 01:11:42 a guy with teeth anyway these at least yeah it could be uh he has no teeth lays has nothing wrong with it i think i'm gonna have to buy this i think i have to buy this dissolves he doesn't eat chips they dissolve on his tongue that's disgusting yeah well you ever lick chips like a lollipop i know somebody that used to i why who did i know that used to do that and put them did we know the same person it was blake wasn't it yes blake carter like uh salt and vinegar chips and then put them back yeah she did in a communal bag yes i think at home at home i don't she'd have like a bot i don't yeah you're right she didn't do it at parties but like yeah yeah blake blake used to be like yeah i just like to lick this and then put the chip down yeah and salt
Starting point is 01:12:27 and vinegar yeah yeah because it's got the most power your son it's like tangy you know tangy yeah it's like a cheese grater on your mouth anyways if you do that out there stop so we called her old leather tongue i don't know don't don't don't do that ever gotten licked by a cat oh that's that's crazy i'm gonna be thinking about that the rest of the i know it's a canceled out the rest of the show we just had i'm so you don't think about these sweet king's jerseys though the helmet's fine so the king's jersey by the way if you're asking jesse i'll throw to you just a second uh king's jersey if you're asking so we've done nothing to describe it is that it's the old um the gretzky one it's the gretzky one it's the they went to the finals
Starting point is 01:13:10 king's jersey which is better i think than the yellow and purple one from the 80s it is and it's not the burger king gretzky one stop it okay go ahead topic time what's the grossest thing you do with food stop it topic time uh this always puts people off i like to dip french fries in mustard i haven't done it in a long time that's not good i haven't done it in a long time i'm back on if you're doing condiments i like i like ketchup on basically anything i can do ketchup like pouring a whole bunch of ketchup on your mashed potatoes and then mushing it would you put that on steak ketchup on a steak it usually doesn't need it there's enough flavor but if it was just like a piece of meat yeah wow okay when mrs dangle and i were dating our third year anniversary we
Starting point is 01:13:53 went to the keg and i could not afford the keg and we got steaks and she put ketchup on it and i almost left really okay i can't believe she's it's the it's the most aggressively scottish thing she does yeah wow i uh i will eat processed cheese right out of the packaging i like like you know like the jiggly cheese oh yeah craft singles right out of the packaging and i'll sit there just just i mean how could you tell with this physique but it's a you're in the second gray oh man i yeah i don't know why but i can do that i can still do that i used to eat the packets of ketchup straight out of the okay yeah no that's here as a kid like as a teenager you know like um yelp there are the two yeah that's how i used to do the packets of ketchup
Starting point is 01:14:43 i love hockey players do mustard for like health purposes is that it's not healthy apparently it does something does it you've never seen the players having oh yeah but i assume that's just hockey tradition and not health the reason oh it could just be them being meatheads like i don't know oh oh what what we got breaking news nathan mckinnon covid protocol related absence will not practice today yeah they need a taxi squad yeah it's crazy like all of this breaking at the start of this wow wow wow wow talk about food with mckinnon and your phone's ringing who's on the phone it's uh i cannot mention who's on the phone oh dear oh but he's texting him he's texting or the show's gone off sorry yeah i know are we done no let's get to the press conference
Starting point is 01:15:33 okay so um let me hit the button the steve dangle press conference all right so if you're not a member of our discord what are you doing it's about time get on there go to sdpn.ca and scroll the little image with the little discord guy and the uh dangle navy logo they've merged together to make one logo click that then you'll head right to our discord and then sign up if you're not on our discord it is akin to throwing a napkin out of your car
Starting point is 01:16:13 without the excuse of having two bees what are you doing as of last night our discord has 6969 members no one joined it was it was
Starting point is 01:16:29 it was a nice party for 6969 but yeah we've passed 7000 people that's amazing it's unbelievable that we've created i would like 7,069 7,000 people and we even have chicago white socks fans a couple of them oh we do a couple yeah oh yeah it's very active oh very very active they are small but they are there and they are rowdy and especially after what ryan tapera former blue jay ryan tapera oh man what did he do said it about was it the astros yeah and dusty baker's like i've never even heard of him yeah ryan tapera's
Starting point is 01:17:05 middle reliever and he was like they do some crazy cheating stuff over there and Dusty Baker's like not on my watch is he the guy who pitches at like 5 o'clock Ryan Zafira he goes all the way under no that's Craig Kimbrell I think but Ryan Zafira was on the like 15-16
Starting point is 01:17:21 teams I think right wasn't he yeah anyway we're throwing those back also while we're promoting things our newsletter if you go to stpn.ca there'll be a pop up the first time you visit it sign up for our newsletter because uh sometimes occasionally like this morning there was a discount code sent out to newsletter subscribers for 25 off of the sdpn shop hey so always sign up and get some fun things like
Starting point is 01:17:44 that in your email inbox and if you're not signed up for the newsletter what's the question you would have no no it's what are you doing i can't believe you would say that to me the day after columbus day noted italian christopher columbus is he yes it's a day of italian yeah by the way this that's that is a soprano's joke and i am fucking kidding um the uh yes he was a i believe he's from venice and he uh wanted to get i think the merchants in venice who were one of the most powerful groups in the world at that point to fund him trying to find the other way to india and they wouldn't do it so he went to spain and he said we'll do a bunch of catholic stuff when we get there and the the the crown which was extremely very catholic at that point and i
Starting point is 01:18:34 think well i mean if spain still had a royal family they would be um uh they said okay we'll fund that and i thought it was the portuguese no no it was the spanish oh yeah um and then he claimed it on behalf of he claimed i think it was i think it ended up being like the dominican or something he never went to north america he never actually it's so funny the united states has columbus day because he never set foot in what would be the continental united states ever not once what yeah he's never been like he never it's it's a bizarre thing that i had no idea yeah he's never went to he he landed in the caribbean he's christopher columbus was never in america never no that's fucking wild yeah he was in like i guess like the caribbean islands maybe central america
Starting point is 01:19:21 if i might my history is a bit spotty on this one but yeah you never went to anybody he made it there and then he made it back to tell everybody about yes with the three ships 19 years yeah and he did it like he went back and forth he went back and forth and they founded some colonies and things and so all that time going back and forth he never went to america what like he never stopped i don't think you know what i've never been imagine like the whole thing like in alternate reality there was no america they were just pranking christopher columbus like he's he thinks it's there it's not what's the uh he landed in a place uh the where he where he landed was the bahamas oh wow yeah so uh yeah and and then he later visited
Starting point is 01:20:09 cuba and hispaniola and hispaniola now you would know as haiti and i think the dominican as well because they had because they're set they're on the same island but they're separate countries so yeah um and he there you go and then he ended up in trinidad southern sorry the northern coast of south america um but never never uh from what we understand um yeah never really got to like america fun fact about his trip to trinidad there he discovered a man whose testicles weren't working because he took a vaccine and then a rapper tweeted about it in north america and then it made international news yeah damn the christopher columbus discovered nicki minaj's cousin's friend damn yeah and now he can't get married and now she left
Starting point is 01:20:57 yo your friend cheated on his soon-to-be wife and he got like something that blows your nuts up or none of these people existed yeah and she just no jesse why would they make that up Have we taken the first question? No. But anyway, yes, Christopher Columbus never went to the United States. Why the United States has Columbus Day, I don't really know. You know, there's a whole bunch of political reasons for that, but also Columbus Day doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Starting point is 01:21:28 And, you know, you could change it into literally anything else day. And in fact, you should call it that, literally anything else day. Because literally anything else did more for America than Christopher Columbus. silvio dante day whatever you want i don't know the only non-italian actor in the whole sopranos gang oh really oh yeah you love that reference i do because i remember watching it and going there's something off with this guy italian recognized italian you know i can smell something oh like i know what paulie walnut smells like but i do like legit they should have replaced him with that guy from the trashers
Starting point is 01:22:11 documentary i don't even know if that guy's italian but that guy's not galant well galante for sure but who's the guy who did who's the body who's oh uh friggin uh t-bone t-bone yeah that is my favorite character in the history of mankind and anything he's a real person i know it's unbelievable he's just wow and he's only walnuts i definitely know what his basement smells like but silvio is like there's something going on what is his background he's he's like a guitarist in a band it's steven van zandt that's oh he's in he was in bruce springsteen's band for like 40 years i think they've had a falling he's not italian no like apparently he did like a pacino impression and they were like ah come be in a show that's awesome i don't think they expected
Starting point is 01:22:55 sopranos to blow up the way that it did like i don't think there's a lot of shows where they're like the new game of thrones they're expecting that to be to be huge i don't think sopranos the expectation was this was it was going to be this much of a cultural phenomena on thursday i want to do a little game and i want to play you the rock uh his his new single because the rock is now a rapper oh no then duane the rock johnson duane the rock i was um i want to kidding i wish i was still on the radio so we could play a game called pumper to dump it oh can you please send that to me i'm putting it on the show but i think on thursday i want to play for you guys dwayne the rock johnson's uh new single he is now trying to be a rapper
Starting point is 01:23:35 well so you've heard it yes it's out well what do you think of it sorry by the way christopher columbus was from genoa apologies to anybody to the genoese among us oh okay all right hey should we get a question in first question thoughts on jim houston's retirement this is from wham eight seven six five four three on our discord couldn't do we have the two went in huh no what eight seven six five four three oh anyway uh jim houston oh yeah uh i unfortunately didn't really cross paths with him professionally he was always you know in a booth doing stuff um but there was a game where i was uh an intern filling in for Leafs TV and I
Starting point is 01:24:26 got to be up in the press box and I had to go to the bathroom and then my childhood basically walked in because it was Jim Hewson having a conversation with somebody and it was the voice of every NHL video game I had ever played basically and I was like what a stupid moment this is
Starting point is 01:24:42 he apparently hated doing those video games did he? yeah I read that really I loved him yeah I did too it sounded amazing but I think it's a huge pain in the ass because you gotta say like gretzky gretzky but you must get that ski you must get paid really well for it you'd hope so it's voice voice tracking is not for everyone like i
Starting point is 01:25:07 heard um i heard a story about keanu reeves um doing speed because speed is the whole thing is on a loud bus so he had to read a dub over himself yes and like i just heard stories of him like the story we were told in rta in our program in school because we were learning how to do that was just periodically he would have to leave the studio and go fuck like just to yeah just really hard they uh uh the studio that used to do um all the stuff for what's the company that it was a very famous canadian company arthur the aardvark was one of their productions or whatever nelvana i think oh they used to record in the studio yeah that's what it was originally called arthur the artwork yeah well it was called the original okay anyway um uh novena used to do
Starting point is 01:25:57 that and there are actors who are paid to come in and sit and look at a tv in a soundstage studio and just and look at the look at it and then they have to overdub it because what they'll do is they'll go in they'll track then they'll do the animation around what the actor said and then they'll go back and retrack it oh yeah it's crazy it's weird because like the sims what what year did the simpsons stop giving a shit about that their mouths never match never there was like a solid 10 year run where the mouth never matched what the what the fucking simpsons were saying and i was like what kind of student project is this this is the simpsons they just didn't care there are more bad episodes than good now it's a shame they should stop this is from cash
Starting point is 01:26:45 on our discord would you guys ever start a series where you attend different nhl arenas and then rate and do a review on them one this will require a lot of time but visiting nhl arena sounds like a good time should be cheap yeah who's gonna fund this i would love that um i actually was thinking about i was talking to guys last night texting them saying so is that why you brought it up yeah so i want to go see an islanders game because they just look like so much fun and based based on islanders twitter's reaction to our our videos and by the way this weekend i just want to say thank you to everybody that watched our season previews um and and the the views keep coming in we broke channel records we've never seen views like that before
Starting point is 01:27:29 we broke our views record and then broke that yeah every single day we broke it it was five hours of listening content for anybody who was on the podcast feed like that's a lot thank you if you if you divulged all of that over your long weekend yeah because it's a lot yeah but anyway uh uh so i actually do want to go down and see the opening night there but i think it's a sunday game and i don't i'm still in rating so i don't think i can take the monday off i could get back but i just don't think i'm gonna have the time um but i want to get down to the islanders and see see that arena because that's the least convenient job in the world well it's super convenient when you leave on a friday afternoon but for some reason the islanders opening game in this arena
Starting point is 01:28:06 i believe is on a sunday that's cool it's cool but like it'd be great if it was a friday night or a saturday night or a saturday afternoon or something but it's sunday sunday night i think pretty sure oh man oh man i bet no one will drink then they'll probably be quiet i'm so excited for the islanders though i definitely want to go see a game in that right yeah it's 21st i believe so what's what uh nhl city that you haven't been to that you want to visit the most i didn't ask that correctly but you know what i mean which nhl city do you want to go to the most that you haven't been to i want to see a game madison square garden because i had to but they were fake okay so i msg for sure for sure i want
Starting point is 01:28:51 to be awed by the place i'm in um i was awed by td garden i loved boston that was awesome i was awed by the fans like it's not a particularly it's a nice arena it's nice it looks a little okay it looks a little like a strip mall sometimes like it's like a little it's it's a little closed in in the in the hallways but i don't know i liked the garden compares to the roof of the garden no no well the other garden so the old garden so the other one i really want to go see and this is apparently the best arena in the league hands down is little caesars in detroit i've heard great things they say it's the greatest without question facilities everything detroit is like heads and tails above everybody else so and apparently it's great for the players too i don't
Starting point is 01:29:27 know what their day-to-days look like but it's far less glamorous than walking in with your ticket you know they get to walk in the back door with the big cinder blocks and stuff like that so not as nice but apparently even on the player side of things it's really quite beautiful and actually you see that in the all or nothing documentary the visiting dressing rooms that the leafs are sitting in yeah are just trash and you're like i sat in that in house league well it's montreal come on but yeah they don't do anything for uh visiting teams right oh the leafs ones it's nothing special no least visiting room but the the homeroom is pretty spectacular the homeroom is that with the blue carpet like i don't know i don't think it's particularly
Starting point is 01:30:04 absolutely amazing steve what are these tanks the chairs are more comfortable they have i've been in there have you been there yes i have you've been in there oh yeah you saw gary roberts multiple times adam worked in that arena for a year yeah yeah i went in yeah well fuck it yeah i'm just saying anyway yeah so i want to see little caesars and i want to go with you guys and i want to go when the border opens up we could drive because it doesn't make sense for us to to fly to detroit um and i'd love to see a game in buffalo as well but not be one of the obnoxious Leaf fans. Be a nice Leaf fan.
Starting point is 01:30:36 Because a lot of obnoxious Leaf fans. We should root for Buffalo. We should go to a non-Leafs game and just Buffalo with anybody else and just be Buffalo fans. Absolutely. I'm in. And just warring factions of fan bases
