Starting point is 00:02:01 is purpose-built to navigate any environment from forest trails to deep desert sand to the dawn valley parkway steve dangle terrifying in snow might i add did you guys get much snow out in ajax this weekend not not a lot no okay enough to you know throw a couple snowballs injure a couple faces oh that's good okay well listen over there in northern ontario yeah and in that northern of ajax yeah here's the thing uh the ford f-150 tremor offers you 20 almost 2500 pounds in max payload capacity it's got led zone lighting so when you're out at night and you got to get stuff from the car and maybe you're in the middle of nowhere what's great is you open your app and you turn on the zone lighting and the whole car lights up oh beautiful
Starting point is 00:02:40 it's a beautiful thing yeah also uh modes for everything snow uh uh sand uh wet normal also we love the eco mode too ford f-150 tremor build yours out right now at ford.ca slash f-150 again it's ford.ca slash f-150 let's start the show the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake and we're clean shaven mostly uh steve steve got rid of the love patch no i want my chin back um getting it back but you're slowly i like that um uh and i am clear it's very weird i still haven't gotten used to looking at myself uh jesse do you do you miss it do i miss it no i honestly it was getting i i think what i need to do if i was going to do it again next year is i'm going
Starting point is 00:03:35 to need to like get a beard oil because i noticed it was just very it was very like bristly you know you know i was kind of on team that's unnecessary and then i tried it it's good right it's necessary yeah i i was thinking that like i'm like it's just every day it's super itchy and weird and you know that that would that would be the thing but i don't miss it it's nice well you condition your hair yeah you condition your hair on your face do you control do you condition your beard is that what you're supposed to do when it's when it's in full flight yeah wow oh yeah i didn't even And, you know, I know nothing about beard care because obviously I never grew facial hair. It feels really nice.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Jesse, what do you do? Do you ever do anything like that with your face? Not really. No? I'm just generally a clean person. Wow! Do you condition your face, though? No, I don't condition my face.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Do you use beard oil? No, I don't do that either. It's not big enough to use beard oil. So you're just a soft boy. Do I wash? Yeah, do you wash? What do you wash your beard with? Like soap and water.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Just soap. well i use like face wash and i use it on my entire yeah yeah i did that i did that yeah yeah so i think that's fine i want to get to like the important stuff which is did we meet michael posetta yeah thank you all right in the middle shut up adam i'm just so excited about sorry our goal was 3k originally michael posetta had the exact same goal and then he ended up raising is so his goal at the other day was uh 5k and michael posetta hit that on the nose 5 000 ended with 5 000 bucks the steve dangle podcast movember page for our goal of 3k we finished with 6 540 get wrecked hey we can say that we fought michael posetta and won yeah
Starting point is 00:05:28 boom got him take that let's zetta take that that's amazing by the way that's pretty cool 13 713 raised since 2024 so the two years we've done it that's pretty great we're all we're heading towards the hall of fame marker with the hall of fame markers a hundred grand right i think we can do it you think we can yeah it's gonna take us we can do it yeah we can do it they do have hall of famer guys like yeah like a whole thing on their on their wall at the movember headquarters jesse and i were there shout out tim uh tim one of the big hall of famers a listener of the sdp huge movember uh razor every single year he is a hall of famer he's a nice guy yeah uh really so are we like we're great yeah well i just want to say thank you to everybody for
Starting point is 00:06:14 for donating obviously we understand where the economy is at we understand that nobody's got any money uh so the people that did donate whether it was five dollars or fifty dollars and i saw so many ranges of donations just want to say how much we appreciate you thank you uh pretty pretty awesome to be able to raise that much and we did easter seals and we asked for your money and you donated it we did movember and we asked for your money and you donated it moving on to the next thing no we're not asking for anything what are we doing oh i'm taking a break from asking now i wanted to start today's hockey coverage with uh a shout out because the shout out you know julian and cj sometimes leave their stick tacks and finger wags or whatever they call it
Starting point is 00:06:58 you know cross checks i know uh uh imagine i'm gonna do my weeks you know why i oughta uh yeah they're why i was uh they usually leave it for the end of the show i think sometimes you gotta start the show with it and it is today kyle palmieri uh man with one of the plays of the year on one knee now if you missed this Kyle Palmieri took a bad fall after a hit and he snapped his ACL and he didn't know at the time that he had snapped his ACL but he knew that he was hurt and his knee wasn't working properly but still managed on his way to the bench to grab the puck and make a really really good play and set up a goal so he got an assist and based on what we're hearing it's a six to eight month recovery so that was his last shift of the season basically
Starting point is 00:07:48 yeah yeah and i just want to say the stanley cup final that that's a man oh my god that's a man right there yes unbelievable stuff like the islanders have a brand and it is iron clad and he fits it beautifully kyle palmieri man you'd never know no it's it's almost like with his hands he's like i'm gonna put everything i have into this because i know it's my last shift of the season yeah and like it was actually a beautiful pass you backhanded like gorgeous um but he's like he's one of the league's oldest players he's like 35 like this who knows that could be it i don't think i don't think that'll be it i don't think it is but like who knows what percentage he comes back like what i'm saying is he's missing dozens and dozens of games when he
Starting point is 00:08:39 doesn't exactly have a ton of games left right so that was a that was a crazy play from like a really kind of unheralded player of his era absolutely really good and it's not only like he he's injured and he's going to the bench with his torn acl he steals the puck yes like yeah it's not just the past yeah it's he makes a play on it it's it's actually incredible and yeah shout out him i thought for a second this was wednesday and this was our fourth performance uh of the night should have been but it's a monday so we're not doing that segment so uh who wore the crown yeah who wore the crown so here he is down on the ice with a literal torn acl and the puck goes up the other way for anybody listening we're showing the play happening right now so the the the play is going
Starting point is 00:09:25 the other way philly gets it they're going up ice they backtrack back to their own zone and they're not suspecting that there's a random man behind them waiting to steal the puck right because he's Well, and the reason that well offside, but the reason it's not offside is because Philly brings it back because they're just like, oh, let's cycle back. Let's make a play. Let's break out. And then the Palmieri comes from behind to the unsuspecting Philly player, takes the ball from him, which is amazing. He does a little stick lift with a torn ACL, and then he delivers the assist here for the goal. And that is one hell of a way to end your season.
Starting point is 00:10:02 God amongst men. That was awesome. That's cool. that is a that's a man's play right there uh that's how you go out on the season and you know the islanders have been a surprise this year obviously they're not a perfect team um while the goal is being scored he's being helped to the locker room yeah he doesn't even know the goal graphic is like there's four trainers helping him off the ice look at that actually it's six like they're all gathered around him like the last supper look at that we may never see something
Starting point is 00:10:31 like that ever again in our lifetime no no that could be a one of one for hockey yes yes i need a doctor to tell me how insane that is actually no i don't i saw him not be able to skate like he could have just laid there and just had the shift be done yeah nope no it's it's uh it it kind of goes to show like the islanders have i think surprised a lot of people myself included this year i think they've surprised themselves like i don't think um with the new gm coming in that they were expecting to be you know just slightly outside of the wild card right as december 1st hits but here we are and you know uh strong defense really great goal tending for big save dave who hates hates that moniker i don't know why um yeah he doesn't like it
Starting point is 00:11:20 shut up dave yeah dave you're big save dave all right just be big save dave uh but uh a dsd you know uh pittsburgh right now is in the second wild card spot with 29 points they've played 24 games the islanders are right there with them only they've played 26 so i'm surprised they're on the outside to be honest like they've gotten some crazy i mean matthew schaefer is the one everyone knows about like he's gonna win the calder in a runaway i'm pretty sure um but like bo horvat i keep bringing up every time i look he scored yep and like some of the league's top producers are not going to be at the olympics yeah it's kind of insane beau horvath's one of the like there's a conversation of guys who everyone's like they better be on this canadian
Starting point is 00:12:09 roster and they might not be and horvath's not even in that conversation yeah uh i'm seeing more and more americans go they're not actually going to leave jason robertson off are they and they might i mean bill bill garen said last week he was like uh well this isn't like peewee you don't just pick the players that are playing the best at the moment no but what about the players who score all of the time you know simply i don't need them what if i don't need six foot six million uh tage thompson to score 40 goals he was incredible last year yeah didn't make it he's doing better this year might not make it and tage yeah he's another one yeah it's crazy uh yeah so anyway uh palmieri big shout out to him and uh i want to uh i want to move on to this uh because
Starting point is 00:12:57 i think this deserves a shout out josh yohi uh tweeted this sydney crosby age 38 now on pace for 53 goals this season go off i was about to say go away nope nope never want to go off king yeah he just so he out of Ovi and Sid Sid is the playmaker right yes he just passed Dave Anderchuk for 15th in goals yeah and he's just gonna keep climbing and keep climbing he's ridiculous yeah to to still be scoring at this pace we all expected it of Ovi because he just sort of became this marvel but the fact that like sid's goal scoring has kind of gone up and down throughout his career yep but his points stay the same he's i hope people fully appreciate who he is and like i just feel like there's maybe an age of person who doesn't quite quite get it with him like he
Starting point is 00:14:03 went away for a while too and the penguins were they were a little irrelevant for a little while and it looked like the not not irrelevant you're never irrelevant with sydney crosby but it looked like they were never going to do it again and it wasn't until they got the back-to-back cups that uh they had this ridiculous renaissance and got a little more uh got a little more attention and Ovi sucks up a lot of oxygen. He got a cup there and breaks Gretzky's goal-scoring record. You never get to see Sid have another Olympic moment.
Starting point is 00:14:38 And now you're finally about to. He's unreal. Steve. We've done this so many times on the show. How do you expect this to be sustainable? 53 goals in the season. Sidney Crosby has given us no reason to think it's not. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:56 His career high in shooting percentage was the 2010-2011 season. Okay. He had 32 goals in 41 games. He was, oh my God. Wow. He was unbelievable that year. It's a crime he missed that much time. He shot 19.9%.
Starting point is 00:15:14 That's pretty damn high, especially for back then. This season, 16 goals in 24 games. He's shooting 28%. Oh, wow. wow uh whoa huh well when you put it that way i mean i think he's good for 40 yeah yeah and like it's you're banking them yeah you know like you're putting yourself enough ahead to when you eventually regress yeah you're gonna have a lot of goals banked i don't know if 50 is the pace but it's pretty impressive so far what are i i want to know being 10 above his career high
Starting point is 00:15:52 Can you, who are the top, what are the top shooting percentages in the league? And can you adjust it for, like, minimum 50 shots? I can. I can do that. Morgan Geeky is going to be up there. Yeah. There's somebody who is also shooting the lights out right now. He has 20 goals in 27 games, and he's shooting 28.6%.
Starting point is 00:16:15 Yeah. There's another guy, like, not even on the outside of the Team Canada conversation. He's the top goal scorer in the league. i i know i think you gotta put it in context of who morgan geeky is yeah the hot streak he's on right now but yeah they said that he is like up there with leon dry sidle and goals since like the calendar year started or whatever and he's like i shouldn't be there that was his response i think that's great so uh ron francis drafted him twice and this is a story that's been going around he was drafted in the third round in 2017 by the carolina hurricanes and then when it came
Starting point is 00:16:54 time for the expansion draft ron francis was with the kraken and he drafted him in the expansion draft then he let him walk as a restricted free agent did not qualify him he has gone on to three seasons in boston of 17 goals 39 points wait did he ever play for seattle oh yeah he played two full seasons two full seasons two this is the thing his first season with carolina he had three goals and four points in two games and you're like whoa here he comes then he gives you three goals in 36 games oh seven goals in 73 nine goals in 69 with the bruins 17 33 and this year in 50 fewer games than last year he already has 20 yeah it's crazy dumb it's crazy all right stupid you ready for shooting percentage stat give it to us it's i'll give you a bar so a put it these people in
Starting point is 00:17:52 context ovechkin's career high in shooting percentage came in the 24 25 season he shot 18.6 percent last year last year ridiculous because he scored 44 goals in 65 games he's absurd austin matthews point one off his career shooting percentage high was 18.7 in the 23 24 season wow the 69 goals so 18 percent in the high range is like hey that's the greatest goal scores of all time they're shooting that on their best seasons currently shooting percentage leaders with a minimum of 50 shots morgan geeky number one of course yeah 28.6 percent maddie you can throw I'm surprised that's it, honestly. Sidney Crosby is second at 28.1%.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Logan Cooley is three at 26.4%. Not injured Logan Cooley, by the way. Tom Wilson is fourth at 26.3%. Marty Nietzsche is fifth at 24.5%. Kiefer Sherwood with 12 goals in 26 games is shooting 24% at number six. Brad Marchand is seven. Drysaddle, eight. Shifley, nine.
Starting point is 00:19:01 Caulfield, ten. the thing about shooting percentage is oftentimes it doesn't carry over year over year so like a keeper sure would i would expect that to regress down to like a 10 or a 12 next year but sometimes it carries through you like it carries through the entire season right yeah and so if you're gonna get a guy like that it might be worth it to just get him uh because uh he's he's got the magic this year and you know the one thing you got to be careful with with a keeper sure would is are you getting matt balesky right yeah well is this a is this a run or is this who you are if you get keifer sherwood like i i i don't trade for the player he is now i trade for the player
Starting point is 00:19:41 he was last year which is a pretty damn good really damn good player yeah 19 goals and i think he led the league in hits by a forward yeah minimum um yeah no that guy can play for my team this guy who like it might not be all that sustainable but he still gets like eight hits a night oh yeah yeah no he can play for my team yeah because you're not getting him for the goal scoring that's just an added plus that you just happen to have right now so how many guys are shooting 20 and up uh we end at brandon hagel at 14 that's a lot of guys can i just say had boston just hung on to marshan and paid him like they would be far and away the best team in the atlantic like i know they already are close to it like the bolts are on an absolute tear but like
Starting point is 00:20:25 seeing uh him up there he's in what seventh i think in shooting percentage yeah he's shooting 23.4 he's got 15 goals in 23 games yeah he's gonna put up 30 like he's got enough bank where he'll put up 30 it's insane that's crazy yeah long term it's still probably the right idea but it i mean listen uh i'm also mad about it because it essentially won the panthers the cup Maybe without that third line, the Leafs get by them. Maybe. Probably. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:20:55 That's the Leafs' biggest mistake ever, is not paying the Carlo price for Brad Marchand. Yeah, they should have paid it. I think they win that series if they have Brad on their team. Yeah, Marchand costs less. Yeah. Yeah. Cool.
Starting point is 00:21:09 Thanks for that. Can we end the show? It's crazy. I ruined my day. No, no, let's not do that. No, I know. There's been some really impressive goal-scoring numbers. Like even Tom Wilson, who's up there in fourth and shooting percentage, 15 goals already banked.
Starting point is 00:21:22 He might not make it 30 goal season for Tom. Well, I think he makes it. I think that type of player on the team. Who is who does he replace? Travis connecting? I think so. I do think I think Tom Wilson's on that team because you need a bulldozer. You do.
Starting point is 00:21:36 And America's building it. It seems like anyway, a tougher team. How many games before he's kicked out of the tournament? Well, that's a good question. You got to remember, this is the this is double IHF. Yeah. Yeah. and uh well listen if the tournament happens at all i mean based on what we're seeing with the
Starting point is 00:21:51 arena uh like sam bennett uh con smith winner under nhl rules in an nhl tournament yeah you bring that player yeah uh double ihf i don't know tom mosen leads the league in penalty minutes if you take away miko rantanen's penalty minutes because it's kind of getting kicked out it's Kind of a farce, the Rancidon ones. He has 57 on the year. Tom Wilson has 54. So I say Tom Wilson leads the league in penalty minutes, you know? Noted goon Miko Riegel.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Right? Yeah. When did that happen? Yeah. That's wild. Kind of a goon. Sometimes life throws you curveballs, and you don't have time to get to them. And that's where TaskRabbit comes in, and I think you should check this out,
Starting point is 00:22:32 because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to rappel down and clean all the windows, but they never clean my windows. Uh-oh. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window. You can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
Starting point is 00:22:49 What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you've got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing. The chemicals. You've got to have the right chemicals. See, that's what I'm saying. That's why I used TaskRabbit, and I employed a tasker. Here's the thing.

Starting point is 00:24:02 and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. Well, the reason I brought up Sidney Crosby was he did get a goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night, but only one of two. In a rare game where the Leafs allow less than three or four or five goals, Saturday night, after a really not great Friday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs on the second half of a back-to-back
Starting point is 00:24:26 actually won a game. And I want to talk about the two games this weekend because Toronto had a 2-0 lead over Washington. They blew it, and they blew it in the most Leafs style possible, which is just terrible defensive coverage. And it's so funny because on Saturday, I thought their defensive coverage was just as terrible, but Dennis Hildeby stood on his head,
Starting point is 00:24:46 and no, they got pinned and pinned and pinned and pinned. They got pinned a few times, and Pittsburgh did nothing with it. That's where they got lucky. Or it's Berube hockey. so this this is what i was struggling with because the penguins were i mean let's just say it very unimpressive on saturday night i mean listen that be beware of october october teams man beware the penguins look a lot more like what i expected yeah and the capitals also look a lot more like what i expected and they had opposite starts right um but it was a weird night where we got to see
Starting point is 00:25:26 i think the best possible performance the best the the type of game every one of those players needs to play all on the same night like and they weren't perfect either like max domy's i thought was perfect took a penalty uh zero rating two assists hell yeah max no me hat trick let's go like uh like yeah penalty and two assists does sort of fit him and yeah and a zero the third line which heading into the season was always going to be one of the most important for the whole equation because their bottom six has been terrible you've opted to not spend as much on star power and you're going for depth well that all falls apart when the depth is shit doesn't it right and it was it was shit on friday yeah and what joshua mcmahon all get goals all look great joshua in particular
Starting point is 00:26:23 against the penguins and he sat the previous game he did i have to tell you i think matthias michelli's days are numbered here oh yeah uh i don't think like when you saw yarn croak too i when you saw that third line kind of come together i think you can switch yarn croak in with any of the guys on the fourth line and you can you know do that if you've got a maintenance day or something you make two million get out of here okay is that too much in your eye i don't think yes because i think in this new cap world like that's one million to me i think next year yes this year no get out of here but like you're moving him out for what for to save two million bucks to do what bring in a better player well who is that then you got to spend the money to
Starting point is 00:27:01 get them you got to spend assets to get the better player which i don't think they should do and i think you don't either yeah that's correct you don't want to save this team so i have a different type you hold a guy like cali because you're gonna have injuries um fine a guy like matthias michelli they've tried two of them they've tried matthias michelli on every line like cali yarn croak i know what he does matthias michelli i'm like literally what do you do here you can't score you're not skating very well uh you're not you make the occasional play you can see some vision there but like are we really like oh man we really need matthias michelli's he's not like the one thing about max don't be not a perfect player takes dumb penalties i totally get that yeah
Starting point is 00:27:40 has vision has great vision and sometimes that vision is a little too much as you get with playmakers even like mitch marner where they try to force a play and max does do that but i look at matthias michelli and i'm like it would be nice if you attempted one i don't i don't know what you do he's playing way too safe and he's gotten tighter and tighter as the season is gone at the beginning of the season it looked like that was a guy right um i still think he's a guy i just don't know if he's the right guy for this team the asset you paid for him kills me three third round pick is so much that goes to a second by the way it does it what are the conditions uh i think it's like if he plays no if he scores 50 points which they are not in danger upgrades to a
Starting point is 00:28:25 So it's a 2027 third and it upgrades to a 2029 second if Toronto makes the playoffs this year and Michele records 50 points. Well, he's so you're good. Yeah, you're saying I think we're good. I think you're good. Yeah. So it's a third. But that amount for a player who right now is unusable when everybody's healthy because there's no fit for him like that. That kills me a little.
Starting point is 00:28:51 so uh on i think it was on saturday it was mentioned the mammoth are looking to do business or i can't remember who said it and where and i was like well that's someone brad has made a deal with and then i was like it's kind of a shitty deal yeah oh yeah maybe don't i don't know now you look at that and how they spent the cap space they got when marner left yep and it's such a disappointment because that was the whole idea if you're gonna lose marner you better utilize that space to bring in at least a couple different people who can fill in all the parts and he's failed to do that yeah yes and i again am bashing my head against the wall and people are like well you wanted a gritty team here it is and i'm like okay you don't watch nobody asked for matthias
Starting point is 00:29:39 michelli zero some anything zero effort yeah zero effort nothing supplying for any side of this but even like i i like nick wa um he struggled at times i think he fits in now but uh like dakota joshua everyone's like well you want a grit and i'm like what are you talking about and then the way he was playing there was no grit well yeah and then he's put together a few shifts recently where he's like mucking it up in front and it generates some offense you're like okay that's something then he's healthy scratch then in pittsburgh what does he do flies off the bench his first or second second shift of the game blows up matt tumba and you're like hell yeah yeah and then keeps going and then had that goal which was phenomenal like you mentioned and then i think
Starting point is 00:30:20 that's the thing like that was the dakota joshua i was so pumped about yes and if we got that guy every game i think their record might be a little different and canucks fans have said uh this is kind of how he is though uh sometimes he needs a coach to smack him in the pants and get him going if if that's what it takes there's nothing wrong with getting a guy who can elevate in the playoffs uh except for if you don't get you have to make it yeah and um they're still away a ways away yeah and and i think uh but it was great to see him have a great game it was great to see that third line have an identity as you know we were talking about the two guys sitting out yarn croak and michelli i love the fourth line this is the first time in the matthews era
Starting point is 00:31:03 that i've liked a leaf's fourth line this much it's lawton it's lorenz and it's one of yarn croak or Robertson Robertson is Robertson a capable depth guy now well he skates like mad and and he tries and he is he's got the one thing about Robertson it's the same thing they say about Cowan is that he's got a motor oh he doesn't stop and his feet the one thing about Robertson skating is that it's clear that he doesn't have a lot on the ice if he stops skating so if your feet stop you're dead he's like a shark yeah but if he doesn't stop his feet the entire time he's out there he's whizzing around that's when he's his most most effective i'd say the same about dakota joshua who is objectively not as fast as robertson uh but the second he stops moving his
Starting point is 00:31:47 feet he stops being valuable and i think you're seeing these guys sort of start to get like no no you got to move all the time short shifts and then get off that's why they've been getting killed off the rush is if you watch their forwards in the neutral zone they're just standing there yes yep and and it's killing them and i know there was none of that against pittsburgh i was tweeting about uh i was tweeting about that i like they did get pinned in their own zone a few times and you know i saw the the third line got pinned i think for 90 seconds at one point or whatever and it doesn't really matter exactly what it was but people got mad at me because i was i was saying like listen it hasn't led to any goals yet but the defensive sequences still need a ton of work
Starting point is 00:32:25 here people like you're just mad they're being outshot in the way i'm like i'm not mad they're winning but i would like them to continue to win and to continue to win against really good teams And let's be honest, Pittsburgh is not supposed to be if they outperform every expectation and everything goes great. Listen, if Pittsburgh's supposed to make the playoffs, why are they discussing a trade with Edmonton right now for their one of their starting? Well, to be fair, like when all this happened at the beginning of the season, I think it was Penguins fans who were like, yeah, we're just we're just happy to be here. It's not Penn's fans. It was Leafs fans that were getting on me. Like, why don't you why don't you just enjoy it?
Starting point is 00:32:55 I'm like, I do. I love watching them win. The thing about it is I'd like them to string more than one together. Yeah. And to do that. I've done this a few times. Yes, and you're going to have to figure out why you have such a hard time conceding your own blue line.
Starting point is 00:33:11 Like one of the things that really got them against Washington is Toronto would get across the red line into the Washington zone. They either wouldn't get it deep enough or they would and wouldn't corral it. And then Washington reloads, fires it back down the ice, and they're off. They just didn't do the work against Washington. They have. I felt like they had the talent. I mean, they're up 2-0. They could have won that game. they didn't do the work whereas like pittsburgh they didn't stop i don't oh boy that was a great
Starting point is 00:33:39 combination of like one of the big criticisms of the leafs is they're the second hardest working team nearly every game they don't work the shit out of pittsburgh but i think that's a team you can at work especially along the wall they're like i think it was uh which goal was it nice it was the first or second goal nize is outnumbered in the zone like three to one and like there's carlson doing carlson things and there's a couple other guys and like if you don't try against nize i'm sorry you're dead yeah uh they just they don't do what you need to do it's it's crazy that that team plays the way they do with sydney crosby in their locker room if that makes sense yeah yeah it was the nice goal it's the first goal there the not the nice
Starting point is 00:34:35 goal the oel goal where nice goes into the corner and there's four penguins on the screen here and he comes away with this puck and sends it over to the open space and oel carouse it and they end up scoring on this play like that's what you need out of the leafs and okay it's a bad opponent but at least they're showing the things they got to do against the good and bad opponents yeah well and they do something smart off off this play too where cowan flies in i think off the bench as a decoy he might have been an option but i thought it was as a decoy i think it's wotherspoon um follows him and yeah there he is coming into the shot right now so he takes wotherspoon with him there's a rebound and that allows for an open space oh y'all just whoop yeah buries it and
Starting point is 00:35:20 but that all she loves wasn't very good that's all done through the work of nize initially uh keeping that puck in the zone and and taking the penguins on one on three like look at ek man well and i also gotta say dude ryan graves is shocking shocking on defense no they don't they don't have a good decor no well and like kevin hayes on your top line i don't know he had an okay assist but like it's sid i don't know man like i want them to do well i do i genuinely do you're trying to make that clear you're trying to temper your expectations because the penguins aren't a very good team uh yeah and at least by the way the leafs are worse than them yes so uh who's the bad opponent in this equation the toronto maples oh the leafs yeah yeah like
Starting point is 00:36:05 i looked at the schedule last year and i looked at every game and said the leafs can win this game here's you know and i would think about how they win this game i'm looking at the schedule after this because i was ready to call for everyone's head if they lose that game yeah uh and i'm looking at the schedule after this and going okay they can lose that one yeah i'll probably lose that one odds are they lose that one so i'm looking at it totally differently and it's and i'm going i'm purely going off of what i've seen yeah so it's up to them to change the narrative well and it was interesting hearing brube's post-game comments because he backed up what i tweeted he said we get pinned in our own zone because he saw your tweet yeah he was like man
Starting point is 00:36:50 adam wilde so brilliant he's the next guy after me it's it's adam wilde and he will get the 11 million dollar contract um so i've only i've only got so many more what only got a well he he's got 11 million more to to go on his contract roommate does oh in total right yeah not a year i think he makes four or five million a year oh yeah oh or maybe three or four maybe three what was the tweet uh it was essentially i'm paraphrasing because i've lost it here but uh he basically said one of the things that's bothering him sticking in his craw is that he's not seeing them with their clean defensive zone exits we get pinned is what he said and so you know what what do you do about that you know and i think obviously we're we're assuming oliver eckman larson is okay uh we don't
Starting point is 00:37:36 know because they won't give anybody any a timeline or deep shit if he's not yeah uh nine game point streak he's on he's been unbelievable for them but i feel like and i finally hey again we have finally found morgan riley a defense partner again um i feel like there's a scenario here where if they just clean up that's like a bad teams usually there's the problems are myriad right where where isn't the boat leaking with toronto you got two very very good performances from joe wall and dennis hildeby you're not even worried about anthony stoller's coming back as Hildeby looks really good. Hildeby's a guy.
Starting point is 00:38:12 He is a guy. He's a guy that's an NHL goalie. And you're scoring goals again. Austin is performing again, which is key. Matthew Nyes, I think, is one of the league leaders in five-on-five assists,
Starting point is 00:38:21 which is insane. Yeah, it's weird. Like, I don't know. It's not like Austin scored the lights out this year. I don't know if he's like this great playmaker, but he just does things
Starting point is 00:38:31 that gets him in the mix. He digs pucks out like Hyman did, right? Yeah. And that leads to assists too. You don't have to have Mitch Marner's vision to create assists.
Starting point is 00:38:40 I think if they could clean that up, they're going to win 75%, 80% of their games the rest of the way because you've got strong, sturdy goaltending. You've got scoring. Well, they're among the league leaders in goals four. You can't tell me that it's not there. It is there, but for me, it's always been between the ears, right? They have 84 or 85 goals.
Starting point is 00:39:03 The only teams ahead of them are the Canes, which is surprising because it's the Canes. Them and Calgary, like, spat in the face of hockey last night. Yeah. So the Canes, Capitals, Ducks, Stars, and Avs are the only teams that have scored more goals than the Leafs. Man. That's it. But they're among the league, the bottom five teams in goals allowed.
Starting point is 00:39:24 I look at them on paper, and it's still not making any sense. No. It's not. Listen. I want this to be good. Dying for it to be good. Jesse's laughing at me here. you guys are really trying to will this thing yes i am i'm coping hard and i and i don't think it's
Starting point is 00:39:42 a bad hockey team i don't think it's division winning at all and i think when you look at the team and what they've had to put out there in terms of linus because of the injuries and how they've played i think that is the reality of this team but i i also don't think they're 30th 30th of the nhl where they know are they a playoff team in your mind like a low ranking playoff team I think they're fighting for seven, eight spots. Like, they're somewhere between seven and ten. They're not playing like it, but, yeah, absolutely they are. Which is why, like, I'm flabbergasted.
Starting point is 00:40:16 Like, I don't get what we've seen this year. I don't. They got to string a few of these together, man. They got to have. When was their last good week? Oh, they haven't had one. Yeah, that doesn't exist. they won they did have one three game winning streak and i that was the beginning of november
Starting point is 00:40:34 they looked like shit and two of them it was ugly it was again one of them i think was against was it not pittsburgh columbus and somebody else or yeah they had the pittsburgh comeback they beat up utah that was oh that was the that was the best game of the season i think yes it was pittsburgh game and uh there was another one in there i don't remember yeah one thing i will give the lease and this could turn around their season is last year they rode goaltending for a while you know we we call it a brew by hockey but a lot of that too is having a good goaltender that's able to keep the play even even though you're getting outshot to oblivion yeah and joseph wall looks incredible and hildeby looks like he can do a thing too so if they get that
Starting point is 00:41:14 level of goaltending that they didn't get early in this season maybe that is a way they can turn the page because stallers when he was in there was shaky you know like after first couple starts and he calls out the team he wasn't good after that and who knows how long he's going to be out because well it's been on the ice and it's scary drags afts and and said specifically this morning on tsn radio that he was given zero timeline and that it's a long it's going to be away a while yeah so whatever happened he was playing injured yeah he smart money is he returns to form but like who knows when yeah and when he initially went out it was day to day yeah it was supposed to be oh you'll miss a couple games he'll be back and now it's like looks like it's gonna be months long so
Starting point is 00:41:53 there was a mike stevens tweet responding to uh oh yeah they they don't think oliver eckman larson's injury is serious and he's like this is code for oliver eckman larson is dead because they're giving yeah they're giving you nothing but i do you remember what was it one of our live shows must have been the rec room one where i made the case that it was early on when they still could probably do things i made the case that one of the um parts of this team one of their ethos uh that the maple leaves have this this season is they have good goaltending yeah and they've kind of been that over the last couple years we have really stellar goaltending and then everything fell off a cliff jesse you're not making the connection the seattle game was that
Starting point is 00:42:33 that was the game yeah that was what it was that night ran over stallers yeah so we did it we cursed them i asked for a season defining game you got one and i got one they didn't defend their goalie and like they're still recovering in the opposite direction you got it yeah yeah whoops that wasn't quite what i had in mind if they get back to hey one of the hallmarks of our team is we have some of the best goaltending in the league the team can easily make the playoffs you know that's what they had last year stallers was amongst the league leaders in save percentage like you have two goals playing out of your mind out of their mind it's hard to miss the playoffs unless you're your last year's ducks but like usually usually it's a very good sign it might
Starting point is 00:43:16 be that simple and i gotta tell you last year's ducks weren't this bad no right so who's who used to say hockey should just be called goaltending jeff merrick yeah they should be called goalie goalie well yeah and and we talk about like maybe this is berube hockey they have a good goalie whatever show me any jack adams award winner and i'll show you a vesna caliber oh yeah what i would like to know is uh did we have gold save above expected stats for binnington's season probably because i think he just came in and was solid like i don't know if he was stealing games i think he was just like an inadequate goaltender like goaltending is underratedly like systems based as well yes you know uh like it was it was jake allen and i'm trying to remember who their other
Starting point is 00:44:01 goalie was that season but it was not working out at all like even kind of yep bennington comes up as like the third or fourth option yep from like peoria or something no he wasn't even he was like with the bruins farm team and one won them a cup in the 1819 season bennington's goal saved above expected were 6.6 which was best for 15th in the league 15th in the league now he did only play like half a season as a starter so like he maybe played like what a third of the games like vasilevsky was 16.3 binnington played 32 games 32 games i mean yeah maculaney in 33 games was a 9.6 maculaney was unbelievable yeah for the hurricanes that year on but i understood the logic letting them go they shouldn't know that freddie 12 wow damn yeah 60 games played uh 12 ben bishop
Starting point is 00:45:04 15.8 robin lennar 15.8 look at that all those teams made the playoffs isn't that crazy how that happens like all those teams were good no you're right like goaltending can be just a system thing yeah and binnington looked amazing because the blues clamped down and they had campbell with the Kings that's crazy come on we're talking about yeah so I don't know I look at the I look at where the Leafs are and I go I are they the are they the Capitals Leafs like the team that played the Capitals or the team that the team that played the Penguins and I think right now they're both and what I and it comes down to floor or ceiling right your ceiling is this your floor is this the right now their ceiling is much higher than what they've played because their floor is
Starting point is 00:45:50 too low cup winners have a high floor that's it at your worst where do you stand right and i and i think that's you know we saw a little bit of both and obviously i know there's a talent differential between the capitals and and uh um the the penguins but like seven two over the penguins is a significant yeah hit in the regular season and i do think it was a full 60 minute effort and it was again so great to see the identity of that fourth line i love the way they're using them i love that they're not throwing matthews and nyes out there on the pk until the very end last 10 15 seconds so they are fresh and then the player rejoins and you get a scoring chance out of it they this this is what i'm talking about when i say do something like
Starting point is 00:46:33 friedman already talked about that they're not talking about firing their coach they're not talking about firing their gm probably not making any trades but like they had to change their philosophy yes a little bit okay we're losing uh what's something we can do uh give the goal score a chance to score yeah let's have matt okay let's rethink how we use matthews and nize maybe they were playing them in the position they were playing them in out of necessity you get lotten back you like what you're doing uh uh you know with your forwards defensively a little bit more put them in a better position oh all of a sudden the pk is killing lots of penalties you're getting some offensive looks you're not hemorrhaging chances the way you were
Starting point is 00:47:16 oh that's doing something they were they were just going into games going maybe tonight yeah and that's not a solution yeah waiting and seeing is not a solution i also want to say great to have william nylander back he was not in the capitals game so that that's sort of a big loss and offered nothing uh what in the capitals game no no no and a reason for missing like yeah well no he was vomiting all morning brube said that he said he was vomiting all day said that yeah said he was vomiting all day you've got to worry about oh no well willie said it's not something but but yeah but berube was saying yeah he was vomiting all day so he wasn't good to go against washington he'll be back and the uh but but having him back but you know again i want to
Starting point is 00:47:59 go back to easton cowan easton cowan who like if you haven't been watching the leafs this year this is a guy that was you know a surprise pick a couple years ago um and he turned out to be a really good one and this is a guy that we were not even really fully expecting to make the roster this year thought okay well out of camp he did make the roster but he'll get nine or ten games and he did and they got to the point where they were sort of scratching him so sent him down to the ahl and he's come back and been a the top six option he's indispensable that this team needs like the what where would the top six be without easton callum uh not good not he's been anywhere good steals pucks digs digs along the boards I think a great compliment for John Tavares as well
Starting point is 00:48:45 because he's got Tavares now has two very quick wingers which is really important the reason they kept putting Bobby McMahon with him is that you know John is not the most fleet of foot player no and so in previous years you want to have him with faster players so that the line doesn't slow down too much you got William Nylander on one wing and Easton Cowan on the other you're good now I i'm very interested to see how domi does in the first line because i i think it might not be long before that's cowan's job to assist not not good enough for you well i mean it sort of shows you where the leaf season is at where he was first line healthy scratch first line yeah right but if i mean i i hope he works there's proof of concept there that it can work but if it doesn't
Starting point is 00:49:30 like Willie and JT, I think are perfectly capable of handling another guy. Throw cow in there. Why the hell not? Well, I think I, I like the, I like the Domi thing right now.
Starting point is 00:49:40 I think you need somebody to dish to Matthews. Get that man a puck. Yes. With Cowan, his numbers, his underlying numbers are also supporting how good he's been. Obviously you're, you know,
Starting point is 00:49:53 anytime you get to step into a position with Tavares and Nylander, you're in a good spot. But if I look at the other guys they've put into that position in the last two to three years, so that's been Callie Yarncroke, Bobby McMahon, Nick Robertson's been there a lot of the time. Michelli. Michelli was there. They did try back in the day, Tyler Bertuzzi there until he found his spot on the first line with Matthews. That line seems to have found itself. So now we've got an identity for the fourth line, an identity for the third line, which looked really good. I hope they can continue that. the second line's looking strong matthews and nize are are coming on here but that that domi matthews nize line which was supposed to be the thing guys it's gonna need a few games to like work itself out right matthews is being held to a really really high standard and that's because
Starting point is 00:50:41 he should be yeah he's austin friggin matthews but i think people are i think they've they're two down on him and i think in the most recent i think the injury had a lot to do with it because we're getting flashbacks of last year and it's hurting the fan base's confidence yep that they have no idea what's going on with them and there's like legitimate fears he might just be cooked but if you look at the few games that he played before the injury and the couple that he's played since coming back that looks like the guy i remember yes yeah it's maybe not quite all there but he's looking a lot closer he's he looks better than he did last year jesse do you think domi nye's matthews can work long term i'm skeptical just based on what we've seen out of
Starting point is 00:51:32 max domi and that it'll work for a couple weeks maybe a month and then it'll kind of go back to what it is i don't think like this is something you're running out for four rounds of a playoff series if that if that's the bar for the leafs i don't think that's good enough like are we are we trying to be a really good regular season team are you trying to win the stanley cup well right now you're trying to get into the playoffs so right let me let me give you a situation so you were like okay what do you trade yarn croak for what do you trade michelli for what if the solution up front costs you Domi and Robertson like as a package deal Robertson's this young guy's been playing well like does that get you anything no what if you retain on Domi
Starting point is 00:52:20 still no it sounds a little NHL 26 ish where you're like okay I gotta add up all of the little bars from the players so that it equals the one good player and you know what we'll get Miko Rantan yeah it's not kind of how it works let me give you one that scares you give you you got to wait a little while in order to do this you cannot do this now
Starting point is 00:52:43 Dennis Hildeby that's an interesting trade that's an interesting trade yeah I don't know like this whole thing like I don't know it's hard to make trades yeah try it yeah it's hard to do a lot of things I don't think figure it out I don't think there's much
Starting point is 00:52:59 out there that's like available and you look at what the Leafs could have ended up with like imagine they that Robertson for Chinnikov deal had actually gone through oh it would have been awful disaster disaster I mean maybe there's a world where Chinnikov just matches the Leafs a little bit better but no Robertson has been the far better player this year yeah so I think Jesse makes a good point when he's like well if you're trying to win the cup I don't think Domi on the first line with Matthews makes sense I just don't know that they've got any other options this year totally can it can it work in the interim because in lieu of any other spot sure but i feel like there that's going to be a challenge if if true living is in fact the general manager at the end
Starting point is 00:53:37 of the season yeah they have a hole you can't blow the doors off every year you're going to have no doors left to blow off right so maybe this is the year where you just go with what you got yeah i don't know because like is what's the expectation on these players that max domi is going to grow into this next level of a player at 30 you know oh no he is who he is 750 games in right like so i think we all kind of know what these guys are because they keep saying it amongst themselves in the locker room we're a very veteran team and when you look at it they are extremely veteran they got two players who are under the age of 23 in their lineup regularly on their defense score no one is under the age of 30 when they're healthy no so you put Tanev in there no one's
Starting point is 00:54:21 under 30 well Benoit Benoit uh Benoit's 28 is is Benoit in there if it's I guess it was Stetcher there now like are we Riley McCabe Tanev Ekman Larson Carlo it might be Stetcher it's Stetcher right yeah like if I'm counting Stetcher and Carlo and and uh OEL like they're very old I think it's just the point I'm trying to make yeah so they they kind of are what they are and they're not going to grow into this next level unless you're getting extra performances out of nice and like matthew's going back to like the 69 goal guy and those what i think what if you're happier with stetcher and carlo's your trade well that's and i was just going to say there you go then you're going to create it carlo comes back he plays well he's we're already retained on him 3.485 is what
Starting point is 00:55:02 the leafs pay him uh he does get paid a little more than that but i think boston retained like 15 or whatever that weird number was a year or two um yeah so this year and next year he's a right shot defenseman over six foot tall that is a valuable piece on the trade market ken i don't think you're gonna get because they tried to get jj peterka for brandon carlo this summer and and buffalo ended up not wanting to trade him in division and they wanted josh stone which turned out to be a pretty good bet he's been great there uh castle ring hasn't played but i can understand why buffalo made that trade if peterka was never going to play there the the thing with carlo is there's he's 29 years old and he's got two years left at an extraordinarily small hit that the
Starting point is 00:55:40 Leafs could eat they could eat another 50 of that and then you can really hopefully grab some sort of great is it picks and prospects package is it you know I don't know I don't think it's a one for one like I don't think you're getting Brandon Carlo and then you're gonna go fill whatever Matthews needs on his wing but can you get something for Brandon Carlo that along with some of the other assets you have that you package into some parlay into something else yeah robertson and zelman per turco would have been awesome oh like there's a fix yeah and he you know what he wouldn't be on the cold streak he's on right now because he's on an ice cold streak isn't this conversation better than well you know i don't know what they'll do you can't
Starting point is 00:56:21 do anything yeah oh i don't think we just sit here and say that no i know it'd be a big for a bad podcast it's what i keep hearing like i was heartened by elliot during headlines he's like well they're not going to fire the coach they're not going to fire the gm i'm like yeah they're stubborn i get it and but then he goes they're looking to do something and someone tweeted me they're like they saw your lfr that was just called do something my plan was if they went on a losing streak to just name every lfr do something until they did something i do wonder i know it's not likely i do wonder about what you could i mean you got to call nashville right every day or it's negligence and and and okay let me just let me let me just get let's get goofy for a
Starting point is 00:57:08 second here because it's kind of fun sometimes to do this all right so nashville's having a bad time and ryan o'reilly apparently is worth a first pick and a prospect yeah okay yep uh so you're obviously you're not going to get ryan o'reilly he already didn't want to be here so you kind of already have your answer yes but steven stamkos eight million what if you could get steven Stamkos at four you would have to if Barry Trotz was doing his job uh I would do that but it would cost you an absolutely exorbitant amount of everything um every pick forever you're asking me to retain four million dollars for part of this year and the next two and I and my and here let me let me come back it's like 10 million bucks yeah and Stephen Stamkos this year has
Starting point is 00:57:56 nine points in 25 games so i'd say barry it's not a lot you might want to get out from under the steelberry right so do the predators look at it like this is actually a good use of 10 million dollars to get rid of them because the other option is it's not working it's definitely not working and then but then oh boy then that creates an issue of like okay so maybe the leafs trade some salary what it doesn't really matter then okay are you gonna put them with matthews probably not because they're both shooters right so jt jt and you put willie with nice matthews stamkos could be fun it would be it would be hilarious i don't mind that i think marcia so is going to be a montreal canadian by the way i just feel like that's over stamkos uh yeah yeah i i think
Starting point is 00:58:43 i think marcia so making 5.5 and they could probably retain a little bit on that i don't know just he's got snarl they need a centerman in montreal but if they're going to augment their wings at all i don't think stamp coast is going to play full-time center in montreal if he got traded there i don't see that so i was trying to be like well stamp coast can set guys up last year he had 27 goals which is actually still really good uh maybe not for eight mil but it's still pretty good 26 assists this year he's got three assists in 25 games like for me if we're looking for a matthews line mate that's the number i'm looking at looking at the assist i'm not looking at the goals what about 13 assists in 24 games also plays for the predators 13 assists in
Starting point is 00:59:26 24 games is that marsh or so no is it it'd be a right winger too it'd be a right right winger from toronto ontario born february 21st 2002 we were in high school lol um give me who is it luke evangelista ah 23 years old they're apparently they're shopping him i don't think either side was thrilled with how contract negotiations went this summer apparently it was like they were just like for whatever reason barry dug it in and i think a guy that didn't need to be grind well evidently the higher powers in nashville finally stepped in and said barry what are we doing here and and he's been great so and that's the gm yeah but four goals 13 assists 23 years old plays right wing that is exactly the kind of player i would look to acquire yeah
Starting point is 01:00:20 for matt for an austin matthews type yes wing yeah one for one well no no i'm kidding i'm kidding yes yeah but that's exactly the kind of player i look to a name i looked at and i went would they but i don't think it works is uh you know who's on the preds oh you know where i'm michael bunting michael bunting baby what is michael bunting up to I don't know probably I mean like listen no one's stats look that impressive 13 points in 25 not bad and that historically
Starting point is 01:00:54 like yeah he's about a half a point a game player with proof of concept that he can be even better than that I don't know but he's a left winger Steve he's a left winger you put Cowan on the right of the Matthews line and put Bunting and Tavares together try it I'm sure you
Starting point is 01:01:10 could get Bunting forward next to nothing I mean we know Bunting works with Matthews yeah but keith would always take him off in defensive situations and i am trying to cook here yes right like the preds aren't probably overly enthusiastic about his money although they did trade for him last year but that if you go back and look at that trade it makes no freaking sense yeah and uh like could could a michelli work in some sort of deal there could a domey work in some sort of deal there we're see what we're doing yeah but domi's doing stuff i i think michelle's got to be the first one out the door yeah i i don't disagree uh disagree at all mac
Starting point is 01:01:56 it's worth noting that michael bunting has never quite equaled the point totals that he got in toronto's first season he had 63 second season he had 49 23 goals both seasons the highest he's gotten since then was the year he split between carolina and pittsburgh you'll remember he was traded for Jake Gensel uh and he had 19 goals in 81 games that year 14 last year and five each sorry uh 19 last year and he's got five this year so never quite got to that same level but Jesse would you like a Michael Bunting reunion Michael Bunting's gonna be traded this season he's a UFA at the end of this year and he makes 4.5 million dollars they can retain for the rest of the season on him they have so much cash space in Nashville and Barry Trotz is never just sitting on his hands
Starting point is 01:02:41 he's always doing something so he's going to be moved somewhere and i don't think the price is going to be too high i don't know if that's the fit in toronto it depends on where you are at the trade deadline i don't think that's somebody you go and get now unless you get him now to flip him later right maybe which is something so he keeps asking for something there's something there's something can i reiterate how how little this trade made any sense okay for the for the preds so it was bunting from pittsburgh along with a fourth in 2026 to nashville for tommy novak and luke shen luke shen never played a game for the pittsburgh penguins and was traded to the winnipeg jets for a second round pick in 2026 and a fourth round pick in 2027
Starting point is 01:03:24 so essentially the preds paid a second round pick for michael bunting why as one of the last place teams in the league why was the purpose of that trade to get rid of tommy novak what was the purpose of that trade man why did they do that michelle bunting makes so much sense because they're both two distressed assets the team's paid too much for that could use a change scenery and they make about the same amount of money let's cook here fellas like this is a lot better than this is a little more productive than do something yes we're we're trying to figure out numbers we're trying to throw some names in there we are spitballing and kind of talking out our ass a little but totally we're getting closer to something that sort of makes
Starting point is 01:04:11 sense and i think up until this point the leafs definitely have time like they're having they have time bradshaw living does and he's using it like they haven't revealed who they quite fully are yet like we've debated back and forth about what whether they are still a playoff team or not And the game on Tuesday against Florida is a weirdly important game in that it can really dictate kind of what they are. That's a team that's tied with them in the standings. It's a battle for third last in the East. Like, it's crazy.
Starting point is 01:04:38 But that team has historically, over the last couple of seasons, been the boogeyman for this team. But they're not that team right now. They are very injured, and they're not playing well. They've lost three of their last four games in those three losses. It's one to Edmonton, one to the Flyers, and one to the Flames. Wow. Getting insane performances out of Brad Marchand, too.
Starting point is 01:04:56 Yeah, and so those aren't good losses. So this is a team that they can catch. If they're still not able to look good against a Florida team, that if you've got to get up for a regular season game on a Tuesday, this is the one you get up for on the road. Yes. Then we're like, okay, they're really showing us who they are, and we're getting the full picture here on what the Leafs can do.
Starting point is 01:05:17 I need Dakota Joshua to jump off the bench and lay a hit like he did against Pittsburgh. Go do that. The Oilers, when they were in the middle of playing some of their worst hockey of the season, saw Florida on the schedule, and they basically said, we are not losing this damn game. Yeah. And mashed them. Well. I want my team to do that.
Starting point is 01:05:37 Oh, what's this? Is it a strip tease? Oh, Adam, take that quarter zip off and make it a whole zip. Look at that. Yeah. For anybody listening, Adam was wearing a shirt and now he's taking off the shirt and he has his true classic shirt underneath it.
Starting point is 01:05:55 Thank you, Jesse. It's hot. Listen, I just want my shirts to fit properly and I don't want to pay premium prices for a t-shirt. Give me one of these. Oh, yeah. Squeezing my arm against it. Do the William Regal where you push the muscle up.
Starting point is 01:06:10 This is great for people listening. They can really enjoy all of these visuals. Okay, sorry. For everyone listening, picture a jacked man. Starting point is 01:07:16 world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca the 2026 chevrolet tracks is the stylish suv for those on the move and with the standard chevy safety assist package you have backup to handle every turn with confidence the 2026 tracks start your build at chevrolet.ca there is a uh uh there is a rally happening there is a late push happening for team canada and we've been talking about it for a couple of weeks macklin celebrini conor bedard and it looked for a while like macklin celebrini had the edge and i just wanted to know if you guys saw conor bedard put up four points against my anaheim ducks last night and then chirp the bench on the empty net goal it's you know it's very interesting that in particular team canada and team usa
Starting point is 01:08:12 have put out either publicly or silently that they want guys with a little bit of f you they don't want guys who just put up points they want guys with a little f you and conor bedard immediately woke up in a bad mood and tage thompson for the americans like gets in a fight like a slobber knocker of a fight and i just think it's funny how badard wants to make this team and he's gonna make it really hard for them to say no he's got to keep the pedal down for another three weeks or so maybe a little longer some of the hottest players in the league are not going to make the olympics like think of some of the names that we've already mentioned on the show
Starting point is 01:09:01 We don't know how we're going to get Jason Robertson in there for the Americans. Morgan Geeky is the best goal scorer in the league. He's not even really in the outside of the conversation. Nope. Celebrini, I'm thinking, is getting close to a lock. 37 points in 26 games. Yeah, I think he's got a better all-around game than Bedard,
Starting point is 01:09:22 but Bedard also has 37. Second in scoring! 37 points in 25 games. You can't. How do you say no to that? Jesse, can you say no to Conor Bedard after last night scoring the goal, chirping the bench, showing some fire? Yeah, last night it was a really good game, too.
Starting point is 01:09:39 That wasn't just the Blackhawks beating the Ducks 5-3. That was five unanswered goals. They went up 3-0, the Ducks did. And it's Joel Quenville returning to Chicago. It's Peter Morazic, who was in net, returning to Chicago. It was two guys who are extra motivated to get a dub against this Blackhawks team. And they came out of the gate firing like it was Adam's favorite player, Cutter Gauthier, getting the goal. And none of that meant anything because Conor Bedard did the thing we ask of the best players in this world. And that's put the team on his back and will them back into a victory. And it was incredible performance. And I think for me right now, he's ahead of Celebrini in the conversation of who's going to make the team. I know, Steve, you're more Celebrini, you're more teal, but I'm more Blackhawks in the red or I guess the black that they wore last night.
Starting point is 01:10:31 That's so beautiful. Great jerseys. So like I have him ahead just for what I've seen him do with the cast that he has around him. And and I think right now he's leading in points and goals ahead of Celebrini. So the the counting stats are there as well for Bernard. and I think his compete level is higher too to back up your point Jesse for the putting his team on his back Bedard is 37 points
Starting point is 01:10:57 Tyler Bertuzzi is second in scoring on the Blackhawks what does he have Bedard is first with 37 Bertuzzi like 22 21 next is a three-way tie with
Starting point is 01:11:12 17 points each which is less than half of what Bedard has I think so much more than Celebrini in San Jose. And I don't want to take away from either of them. Both of them are having great performances. But Bedard is more so the Bedard show in Chicago than Celebrini is in San Jose. Well, so it's actually eerie how much it lines up.
Starting point is 01:11:36 Sorry, Celebrini has 37. Next closest is Will Smith. What has he got? I want to say 22. 24. There you go. And behind him, William Eklund, 16. man like part of me like i'm like oh yeah hell yeah the future is teal and uh here come the
Starting point is 01:11:56 blackhawks and another part of me is like if either team loses either of those players they are immediately bottom three yeah oh there's nobody else i mean i mean uh at least with the ducks like you've got leo carlson who's scoring so much but there's other guys that have had more points and oh the ducks have way more options yeah yeah yeah those two guys they're further along yeah those two guys it's just them they're monsters and surely that translates surely those guys can give you 10 minutes 15 good minutes like there was a guy who could barely get a sniff barely made team canon in 2010 and he barely played at all they just had him take like face-offs and play on the fourth line do you remember who it was this young kid didn't really
Starting point is 01:12:45 have much of a future but you know they thought i'd give him a shot patrice bergeron it's pretty good i guess he was okay huh you gotta take these guys like for god's sakes his extras are some shit yeah i'm looking at their face-off stats too because that's important salabrina is at a 47 8 of a bedard is at a 50 are you on the wing are you even playing no i don't think their face-off stats matter at all because the only way they're taking a face-off is this the linesman's like get out of there nathan mckinnon connor mcdavid like yeah they shouldn't sydney crosby they shouldn't be playing center crosby played wing at the four nation face-off yeah that's that's a hallmark of of uh a lot of canadian teams my entire life is they bring like seven eight nine
Starting point is 01:13:32 centers do it i i'm i'm very i'm very interested in that i thought that him chirping the bench and obviously like it's one event in one game that i just thought about the moment from last season where he was sitting in the penalty box looking completely dejected and it was like there were people literally saying well maybe he's just not as good as we thought he might be last year last year 12 months ago yeah guys oh less less oh he was 19 yeah yeah man like i it's it's amazing i love seeing it i love it because you know canadian obviously we're very excited but but beyond that this the the the switch over in his game specifically i think team canada would be fools not to reward that you'd be you'd be crazy not to reward these guys are i mean you're
Starting point is 01:14:23 trying to win a gold medal this year but they're the future of the program i think you have to involve them they're center one and two in the 2030 olympics part of why seth jarvis was at the four nation face-off they thought he could contribute obviously but he wasn't an every game player they saw him as a significant part of the future of the program you're telling me celebrating and bedard aren't that they must be you have to bring them yep you must i hope by the way sydney crosby's playing on the same line as tom wilson man that'd be fun that would be fun wouldn't it put mckinnon on the other wing uh that's the kind of team that uh canada can ice i absolutely loved it i don't know if you guys saw this roman yosi uh played five minutes and
Starting point is 01:15:09 15 seconds to end a game uh it was the uh longest uh shift in team history uh for the nashville Predators. Well, Sergey Kostitsyn didn't beat that since it was officially tracked. Yeah. Kostitsyn loved to stay out there. He also held the previous record at 512. What?
Starting point is 01:15:30 December the 31st game in 2024 versus Dallas, which is pretty unbelievable. Oh, do you guys want to hear? I'm going to send this over to Jesse. You want to hear Andrew Burnett on it? Cause I always think it's fun to hear from the head coach on that. Of course,
Starting point is 01:15:44 five minutes and 15 seconds. The end of game is pretty unbelievable. Like he did this because he thought it was a good idea or to punish him? Mike Keenan did that to Alexey Kovalev to punish him. Yes. I think in this particular case, what other options does Nashville have? Right? Well, who's that kid who's doing really well for them?
Starting point is 01:16:04 Blankenberg? Yeah. You have other players, man. Yeah, but it's Roman Yossi. Whatever. He's got that cool twirly mustache. Okay. How about it's November or it was November when they played this game and you don't want
Starting point is 01:16:16 to kill your captain? I don't think that was going to help them win this game against Winnipeg. It's not. It's still hilarious. They lost 5-2. No, they were in it, Jesse. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 01:16:29 Can you please put this face on the screen? The next words out of his mouth are going to be, oh, fucking... That's what it looks like. Here's Andrew Burnett on Roman Yossi. Well, I think there's a bunch of icings, and then we pulled our goalie, and it usually gives us the best chance to score a goal.
Starting point is 01:16:45 So I think it was, and it was really a fatigue thing. You know, I think there's probably one, two, three, four, five, five, six whistles. So I don't really look into it all that much. Oh, that was underwhelming. It was underwhelming. And also, I thought this was to close out a win.
Starting point is 01:17:04 They lost five, two. No, what I thought was interesting about it is he doesn't say, what a warrior for us. He doesn't say, man, I really trust him in those scenarios. Does he say it in other parts, though? Because this is just 18 seconds, right? Well, maybe, but it was... Is there a before and after?
Starting point is 01:17:19 To me, I think it was... I wondered... Okay, I actually wondered this. Was it a mistake? Like, do you think that Andrew Brunette knew? No, I don't. I genuinely don't. Remember when Mike Babcock was playing Leo Komarov
Starting point is 01:17:34 more than he was playing Austin Matthews? And they were like, hey, why are you playing Leo that much? And he's like, oh, I didn't even know he was doing that. No, he shouldn't do that. It was worse than, oh, I didn't even know.
Starting point is 01:17:42 He was like, no, I didn't. Oh, yeah, he said no first. Yeah, you did. You're right. Oh, I took your word for it. I got to find that. Or the time he didn't put a guy in the box and they had to kill a penalty for seven minutes.
Starting point is 01:17:55 Yes. Oh, my God. What a guy. These guys are the best coaches in the world. They're the best, at least, hockey mind in the world. Supposedly. And they're still, they just get swept away by the tide sometimes.
Starting point is 01:18:12 and i think i mean you want to talk about a guy who's like completely drowning right now it's andrew brunette like what do you do this guy won the president's trophy like you should look at the panthers roster that he won the president's trophy with it's essentially the team that like they there's a lot of parts of that team that went on to win the cup and go to three straight finals yep and look at the roster he has right now yeah i don't know what do you do what would you do yep uh fucking i think that's what he's left with i'm gonna pull it up the shift chart from the game to see the longest uh blankenberg was out there too oh shut up adam shut up all right so uh nick blankenberg deserves some respect too played three minutes and 39 seconds or ish
Starting point is 01:19:03 30 what was that something the three over three minutes consecutively as well why'd he come off with 21 seconds left you lazy piece of crap yeah you know what wow used to stand in and uh really gave up at the end of the game there you stink look at yosi's yeah blankenberg basically comes off the ice to go he goes back out there man they're just out of guesses well you could have put so they don't trust nick hag brady shane nick pervix spencer statsney or yeah that's it there's also a 4-2 game like why are you playing this man to the point where he doesn't have any knees left in a 4-2 game at the end of november are you trying to tie it up and and you're you're too best at offensive options or yosi and blankenberg
Starting point is 01:19:55 yeah i was like oh haig but like that's what that's not what you put nick haig out there for i i would have to watch the film to know like how the tv timeouts and the icings and all that played out to know like maybe you'll see had a bunch of time to breathe and everything it wasn't a big deal like how brunette said can you throw that back up just just for a sec because i want to point something out forsberg's out there a shitload to try to get you a goal stamkos is out there a shitload uh o'reilly's out there a shitload look at luke evangelista why are you trying to trade this player this is a guy you tried to get back in the game with well they shouldn't be trying to trade this player like apparently his name's out there his name's out there like this
Starting point is 01:20:37 23 is an rfa and he's under contract and he's good this is the most confusing directionless purposeless team in the league right now yep and i feel bad for preds fans because that's one of the most electric atmospheres in hockey and at least in north america anyway what are they doing was was i don't know i was that hyped when they're losing all this all this much counter yeah uh per our conversation earlier look at bunting didn't lose didn't use him a whole ton yeah well you don't use no you should use him in offensive yes you should this is what i'm saying right that's a mal you got late offensive chances he was out there with the goal scored yeah there's a lot of blank space well when when the standard is uh three and four and five minute shifts uh
Starting point is 01:21:32 yeah he was out there he was but not a ton they no they use he's a secondary option in an all offense situation yeah he's a third liner on their team he plays third line left wing and they paid a second round pick for it in a year where they were selling hey hey we paid a third line or a third rounder for a guy that we're not even playing right now so fair listen it's all yeah who's we and should the leafs i don't work our team that jesse made i didn't jesse made the trade we did it yeah uh jesse thank you jesse for that you shouldn't be modeling yourself after leafs uh no you shouldn't uh okay all right now all right you're shopping this season and you're like oh would they like it isn't there a site that they i could go to that they won't return
Starting point is 01:22:20 this and it won't be awkward on christmas day because i'm bad at this i usually sound a little more assertive when i'm unsure of myself oh really yeah okay all right i i'm confident in how not confident i am i don't know what i'm doing jenny-bird.ca jenny bird this is a place where you can get a gift that you're basically guaranteed that they're not going to return modern elevated jewelry guaranteed to stay out of the return pile good which we love because there's nothing worse than that opening opening the gift and they're like and then you gotta deal with it on like january 3rd yeah like that's nobody wants that homework two-tiered yeah disappointment is bad the returning it is worse it's that's the worst part for me yeah it ships

Starting point is 01:25:15 uh uh the um alexei toropchenko from the st louis blues uh burned his legs in an at-home incident and he is going to be it's scalding is the word they used um scalding burns to his legs at-home accident out week to week uh he has a goal and one assist in 17 games this year this is a guy who's been really underperforming who they have a lot of high hopes for yeah uh big body um but you know it's a it's a disaster season for the blues uh not bizarre like with with um hughes out with the glass incident yeah i feel like there's somebody else i'm forgetting uh we're lusterine and luster that was a barbecue so what happened yeah barbecue so we're having a weird week for and i and i'm like ah it was thanksgiving weekend like what you know did
Starting point is 01:26:06 you did he pour mashed potatoes down his leg or something like that you know no adam that'd be gravy ah okay mashed potatoes you just go ah and you and or you fling it in your mouth and you go um yeah i uh i was i'm surprised to see that um adam fox for the rangers week to week this is bad that they're in a real bad spot i keep i keep telling you guys i feel like the rangers are much better than this like i had i they have to be better than this i thought that last year i no longer think that sometimes what is it about their game that bothers you then like and i imagine i want to ask jesse this too because jesse you you have you so you hold a little soft spot for uh uh those guys and or at least that franchise the blue shirts the blue
Starting point is 01:26:58 shirts yeah the other blue shirts the blue the lighter blue blue shirts it feels like they're the all inconsistent team like if you had to put together a roster of some of the best but most inconsistent players in the league you might throw Panarin in there you're definitely throwing Zibanejad in there you're for sure throwing JT Miller in there right and I just feel like they don't get it from from them every night miller is either hurt or lazy or both what right yeah like that's funny because it's true it's so like man i just feel like i could get out of bed with a better attitude if i made that much and uh he doesn't you know um what's that thing where they take their feet and they like dig into the skate ah he doesn't uh skate in the defensive zone at
Starting point is 01:27:57 all um they don't look like a team particularly interested in like hockey the adam fox injury comes at a bad time because the new york rangers i think in my mind have been playing really well and i think that's evidenced by their four game winning streak like they were struggling in the middle of november there i think it was like a four game losing streak and then they turn around four game winning streak and they look really good that last week and adam fox was a large part of that him and and panarin have kind of turned it on this late little bit here yes um panarin's points you know they were down early in the season but now he's up to point a game where he should be you know 26 and 27 and adam fox was right there with him as well in the team league
Starting point is 01:28:37 and zabinijad it seemed like okay he can get the goal scoring back you know it's he's he's been missing that the last little bit and he looked like he was getting his goals during so I hope the Adam Fox injury doesn't sink them because I right now they're still in the middle of that four-game winning streak and I hope they can just continue that and be able to
Starting point is 01:28:54 just hold the fort until he's fully healthy again next four games for them Dallas who just murdered Ottawa Ottawa who was just murdered by Dallas but they've been playing well Colorado and then the next day after playing Colorado vegas that is uh unfun i'm rad sorry go ahead jess oh so one weird narrative that's been the last couple seasons with the new york rangers has been jonathan quick and his performances
Starting point is 01:29:25 whenever he's in the in the crease for them he's been absolutely unreal and that's continued this season he's only three and three which is such a shame because he's a 944 safe oh my god that's insane it's it's so there's so much evidence now that it's not an anomaly it's just if you just play him every couple days every couple weeks or whatever you get in there he's gonna give you a good game he was born in 1986 would you say that could he if okay if oh are you ready for me to cook with friggin gas folks if the rangers are all the way out of this come trade deadline is that an option for the Oilers he doesn't need to be hot for long no he doesn't and he's a great he's like a Biddington earlier in his career because he'd have like a couple of good months
Starting point is 01:30:21 during the regular season but then the playoffs he'd be outstanding analytics guys for years were like look at this garbage every time they showed his like underlying number yeah and then the playoffs would come and he'd throw up like a 960 for two months and they'd win the cup that's a great idea actually far more creative than tristan jari well yeah man like i look at that uh i look at those numbers with the rangers and i'm like okay can he give you more with the rangers you probably don't ask him to give you more on account if you have igor shusterkin okay what if you're sellers he's one of like 15 players in the league older than me and adam like he's one of the oldest players in the league he's one of the oldest goalies in the league he might be the oldest
Starting point is 01:31:06 goalie in the league and he's clearly got some left in the tank yeah could he be motivated to go for one more run i don't think you can trust him as a starter at this point like i think that's out the window he's in last year was like he got off to it was ridiculous the way he started last year was like three shutouts in this first like six starts and everything by the end it was like throw it out the window the team sucks everybody sucks quick sucks and i think that's the up and down that you'd have to live with i don't think he can give you four weeks of hot playoff hockey could he give you could he give you if tristan jari if they get jari and he falters like the way stewart skinner did are you i think you're more comfortable putting jonathan quick into a
Starting point is 01:31:47 second round scenario than you are cal pickard i'm not what if jari's the guy who gets you there and quick is the guy who gets you through or you keep i love i love spitballing you keep skinner he gives you skinner hockey but his backup is no longer calvin pickard it's jonathan quick jonathan quick as your backup is very good like i'll give you that yeah and then backup uh starts and then because then you're one a or sorry so it starts flirting with one b then you're in a position you don't want to be in that position i don't think i think you don't want to be in their current position who oilers the oil well you don't want like that's not i don't think that's an answer jonathan quick to me isn't the answer for them i think it's a better
Starting point is 01:32:31 answer than pickard um and if i'm if i'm the rangers like i'm not moving off of that it's 1.5 for your backup uh he's ufa at the end i assume he's gonna retire but we'll see if he comes back for one more season he's like i inter sports um inter sports comparisons suck but like there's a little bit of mad max there yeah there's a little bit of scherzer there just just weirdly explosively angry old guy who has he just he's got i think something left in The Oilers could use an angry old guy. Man, he's got something left in there, I'm telling you. You guys, but what about the Rangers?
Starting point is 01:33:14 What if they just keep their backup goalie? What are you talking about? Well, yeah. Why are you... No, no, he set up the scenario that if the Rangers... You guys are pushing them out of the playoffs. No, no, no, Jesse, he set up the scenario, to be fair to Steve, he set it up like if the Rangers continue to skid.
Starting point is 01:33:26 Thank you, Dad. They're not skidding. Let's keep the Rangers where they are, which is playing really well. And Jonathan Quick is injured. I should preface this all by saying he does have a lower body. injury he's been out for like a week now yeah just staying fresh for the oil he should get back into this i don't think it's going to be a career ender where he's out for months and then he just retires or anything like that so no but like when he was in there he was a 944 but stop taking the rangers
Starting point is 01:33:52 out of this playoff race where they are clearly in it and i don't think they're going to be moving their backup goalie because they're in this thing this is how i know it's a good idea ah because he's upset about it he's upset he doesn't want to lose he doesn't want the winnings he doesn't want the rangers to lose doesn't want they're on a four game winning streak no this is my version of what myrtle did the other day where he was like what happened to the habs and all their fans were like we're on a winning streak actually is that what he said oh yeah well because they got blown up by i think it was colorado and everyone's like wow every colorado i don't know we lost to the best team in the league man yeah steve's like oh rangers they're stinking if they fall out of it
Starting point is 01:34:29 I'm just saying that I haven't heard his name brought up as an option, and I think it's a very interesting option. Yeah, because I don't think it is. I don't think it is one. We'll see how they do without Fox. I mean, obviously, if they do well without Fox, then all bets are off. They're trying to make it.
Starting point is 01:34:46 Yeah. It's going to be a good little test here. Oh, yeah. Because, yeah, they're missing the big piece that's helped them do this. There's a reason they give you tests to see how smart you are. So let's go. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters.

Starting point is 01:35:57 thompson was finally able to square up with stephan nason after the hit last year and what was so notable about this hit was that you know stephan nason caught thompson in the head with an elbow flipped them basically like the helmet came off and like flipped his head sideways and the sabers did dick all about it and they even and then they had a closed door team meeting about it and blah blah blah and then they wrote so many letters um but tage thompson was like no you're gonna fight me and they fought and shelly keith said i had actually forgotten about it and obviously lindy ruff loved it i'm i wanted to know because i had kind of forgotten the incident as well is that tage thompson because i don't know that the sabers have been quite as bad this
Starting point is 01:36:42 year as they were last year in terms of depressing although their fans are still depressed uh is that him going hey this is what you should have done for me and this is our new team culture is that what he's setting in buffalo it's a message to anyone who's willing to listen um he's six seven and heavy and people maybe sometimes forget that because he's too busy scoring all the time bill garren wants a rough team he wants to send a rough team to the olympics thompson who led all americans in goal scoring last year wasn't invited to the four nation face-off and also the sabers have been baby shit yeah this is him i mean no shot at rasmus doline but that's a leader that's someone leading by example i wish someone had stuck up for me in that scenario and now
Starting point is 01:37:40 here's me proving that i'm not asking you to do anything that i wouldn't be willing to do myself stefan nason blew me up and i was asking you to fight him so you know what i'm going to do i'm gonna fight him myself and good for nason for taking him up on it it reminds me a bit of um blake wheeler and evgeny malkin a few years ago i don't even remember who hit who but when it came time to pay the piper you know those are two really good players who scrapped yep i don't know if nason's on that level exactly but uh tage thompson is not here to screw around he's not here to lose and he's definitely not here to get knocked out of action and have nothing to say about it a lot of respect for him yeah well like i said lindy ruff loved it jesse does this does
Starting point is 01:38:27 this turn out to be a seminal moment for the buffalo sabers is this where it finally turns i'm gonna bet no there's nothing really that's gonna turn around the franchise until they do the thing that the crowd was chanting for them to do which is fire adams they were i think they did that two games in a row yeah it was really loud the i saw the buffalo fans talking about how it like made it through on the broadcast and then watching the videos like yeah i can hear that yeah so i think everybody's gonna be unhappy until the regime changes because one thing i think has been really fun to talk about this year the teams that have rebuilt and are now back up anaheim did it the sharks did it the blackhawks did it they're all kind of we see everything that's happening
Starting point is 01:39:09 and then we see in the last previous area like the edmonton oilers do it really well the leafs bottoming out getting matthews every team who rebuilds it works because rebuilds work unless you are completely incompetent and you continue to tear down and then you just keep tearing down you tear down your chair down and you never build up because you don't know how because you're incompetent and the buffalo sabers are actually the exception to the rule that rebuilds work look at the list of the top players in goal scoring or points this season all first or second overall picks right rebuilds work getting high draft picks work unless you don't have a front office that knows what they're doing and to add to that jesse look at the list of names
Starting point is 01:39:49 buffalo moved off of start with sam reinhardt but you've got the florida panther uh the biggest montour olufsen like it's just bing bing bing bing bing and like listen i i understood why they traded ryan o'reilly that made sense because he was like i lost my love for well they got tage but they got tage that was a rare example of one of their unloading deals working out had they simply just held and not screwed around with sam reinhardt's contract and not like a bridge deal for two years what are we doing yeah they used to be sabers team is an all-star team jake mccabe that's a that's a stanley cup winning team jake mccabe yeah they had to throw eichel in there Well, you'd have Lena Solmark and Uka Pekalukan.
Starting point is 01:40:31 It's pretty good. Man. Anthony Stallers? Staller was his name. Was he not a Sabre? No, I don't know if he was a Sabre. No, he was an Oilers. Oh, I'm thinking of the Oilers.
Starting point is 01:40:40 Yeah, my bad. The other goaltending mess. Right, right, right. Regardless, it's one of those things where you look at that and you go, man. Oh, sorry. The best sleeper former Sabre that no one remembers. Brandon Hagel. Oh, I forgot.
Starting point is 01:40:53 I think he was a draft pick. Oh, come on. yeah like this this is where you know i know cj and i disagree on on the sabers took hagel in the sixth round in the 2016 draft you did it that's every scouting department's dream is to draft that player in the sixth round and you ruined it i didn't know that what are they getting i don't know in chicago i gotta look this up yeah brandon hagel trade history i think he might have just not been qualified holy crap how do you oh my god one of them wasn't qualified wasn't it was it more into it no who was it there's a monitor they had and i remember uh
Starting point is 01:41:37 there was a leaf game in cadre chirped montour when he was still on the sabers and it got picked up in a hot mic and cadre goes you're a shitty fucking hockey player on a shitty fucking team that's a good chirp it is a good chirp and Montour did look helpless on a helpless team and then turns out all you need is the Florida Panthers well maybe you don't hire a soccer coach to coach your hockey team Ralph Kruger what are we fucking doing here I'm not gonna lie the first 90 to 100 times that I heard Ralph Kruger coach soccer my brain didn't accept it it's like when you type in the right password and your phone actually goes that's wrong because I'm like well no one's stupid enough to do that yeah turns out oilers and sabers that guy got two nhl jobs yeah dude he got
Starting point is 01:42:25 two of the rarest jobs in hockey bless him yeah good for him just what he got brandon hagel drafted by the sabers in 2016 prior to the 1718 seagull the season seagull seagull hagel participated in both the rebels's and the sabers's training camps during a scrimmage with the rebels hagel suffered a knee injury and expected to return to whl to complete the season despite this he was named an alternate captain record three goals to assist in back-to-back games against the edmonds and oil kings although he was healthy to begin the season hagel speeds are upper body injury blah blah by june 1st 2018 so this is two years uh since he was being drafted the sabers had not signed hagel to a contract and relinquished their rights to him allowing him to become
Starting point is 01:43:12 eligible for the 2018 NHL entry draft. He was subsequently invited to the Montreal Canadiens training camp on a tryout basis, but began the 18-19 season with the Rebels. After recording 30 points in 19 games, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Chicago
Starting point is 01:43:28 Blackhawks. One of the best signings in Blackhawks history. There you go. And then they promptly screwed it up, too. He continued his success through the final... Okay, blah, blah, blah, blah. He set the franchise record for assists for the Moose Jaw Warriors. That's cool. How did they not sign him? Oh, man. Yeah, they literally just drafted him and let him go.
Starting point is 01:43:45 Oh, my God. Well, I'll tell you why. I don't know if it's this way anymore, but remember there was a period where the Sabres just didn't have scouts? Yeah. Yeah. They just didn't have... Yeah, but they can pull up HockeyDB and check out his assists, right?
Starting point is 01:44:00 Right, but he basically didn't play. Right. And my guess is if they had saw him play, they'd be like, oh, no, he's good. But they just don't employ people. Wow, dude. Crazy. so how do you so when people and i was gonna say cj and i disagree on this i do think rebuilds work
Starting point is 01:44:17 i think we're seeing it i think we're seeing rebuilds work you and cj agree 100 because i just listened to the cj show okay he's like he's like people in hockey need to stop using the sabers i think he was referring to don maloney actually and the baloney that maloney was was throwing out the door yeah the sabers are not a rebuild that well they're the exception not the rule yeah so you and cj agree oh okay because cj doesn't love like a tear it back to the studs rebuild i i agree with them yeah uh the leafs had van reams dyke codry riley bozak bozak gardner kamarov like when when matthews marner and neilander made their debut um uh the the problem with the sabers is they continue to strip right and you know you look at the ducks you look at
Starting point is 01:45:00 the sharks you look at the the blackhawks all in different positions in the standing i grant you but all have taken massive steps forward. Montreal Canadiens, massive steps forward in the last couple of years. And it's because they bottomed out for a couple of years. It doesn't, like, not every rebuild needs to be as painful as Chicago and San Jose. Chicago screwed up a lot.
Starting point is 01:45:20 Like, Brandon Hagel should have stayed. Like, why did they trade a 23-year-old winger? That doesn't make any sense. But a guy like in San Jose, they signed some really bad long-term deals and they eventually had to pay the piper yeah right uh anaheim same sort of deal they just and then they made some weird coaching hires and that sort of thing too uh this doesn't have to go this way that's why i was so on the flames about this you already have a good group of young guys but
Starting point is 01:45:49 you need a star you need a star outside of your net are you getting them there to sign there in free agency not many of them make it to free agency right go and draft one oh dude look at this summer and they're and now everybody's supposed to be crazy everybody's talking about how great devin cooley's been i'm like well they're a good opportunity to trade devin cooley then no do not do not want to succeed this no where's where's the quote we need more devin cooley's we need you know how do you get them don we need more by the way the extensions were all announced in calgary immediately after we had that segment so nonis maloney and conroy all announced i hope uh one of three we're good i i have no problem with murray edwards wasting his
Starting point is 01:46:33 money screw that guy yeah fair enough no problem okay i hope they all got raises too i think they probably did good great glad i i feel like those contracts got done by the way jess i feel like they got done because of how disastrous those maloney interviews were people freaked out when they're like oh we got a process that we have to go through i feel like that hurried the process yeah i think it was hey we're gonna spin this to like we believe in them like we don't want the narrative to be like hey uh the president's talking and he doesn't believe in the gm he's gonna get fired so let's hurry up these contracts that's all the flames are is spin yeah 100 they're a pr department masquerading as a hockey team it's you can get a lot for devin cooley right now
Starting point is 01:47:16 yes the league in ga a second league and save percentage and he's on an expiring deal and he only makes 775 and your bet shouldn't be that devin cooley is just this goalie now and forever it's a let's take advantage of this and maybe send him to edmonton yeah well it's crazy because i looked at the flames goalie situation heading into the season and i was like oh that's your backup behind wolf like you're an injury away from this being real bad cooley's been incredible and they still stink yeah that same thing like last year like last year they had incredible goaltending for a large portion of it still couldn't make the playoffs yes well see vladar was not good though for them cool he's been really good wolf has he's been a bit of a
Starting point is 01:48:03 disappointment but yeah they're also leaning on him hard yeah man they're not good they're simply just not yeah but if we talk enough maybe they will be it's a good point i mean how do you disagree with that you know if we text enough insiders maybe they'll be good uh yeah it's it's not great now the Vancouver Canucks lost a uh a bit of a heartbreaker to the LA Kings they called it a low event game Kings had 23 shots Vancouver had 20 there's some chat in Vancouver circles about you know Quinn Hughes's body language after this game um and and frankly I I'm just I gotta ask you the question right like there's stuff out there about Kiefer Sherwood and he's gonna cost a first round pick blah blah blah they are selling guys
Starting point is 01:48:48 they're selling it they're selling so hard that connor garland was out of the lineup and elliot friedman was like he's not getting traded yeah and i'm like i didn't think he was elliot now i'm asking questions sorry so my question to you guys is like if you're quinn hughes when do you call it because it feels like everybody's waiting for him to do it he has no trade protection like Do we see a PK situation where they just decide to move them and they get something against his will? That was a move that the fan base hated and people outside the fan base hated. I hated the Subban trade for Montreal. I thought it was short-sighted and stupid and stubborn.
Starting point is 01:49:37 It ended up being really, really, really good for them. Not right away, necessarily. uh weber was good for them right away suban won the or no he didn't win the norris he got them to the cup final weber did well they both got the preds to the cup final right and everyone's like ah you look stupid yeah and then you know weber got him to the cup final got him to the cup final and was also better for longer yeah than suban which was the unexpected part because he's older um but the trade at the time seemed impossible to win yes you know you're trading north trophy winner who's young and you're getting in shea weber who you don't know how long he's gonna last
Starting point is 01:50:21 and then like you said goes there and gets them to the cup final nashville and then it's like okay disaster trade and then the end everything's kind of fine yeah yeah but you that trust that they lost with the fan base yes there are people who've never come back from that it's true it's like you lost me at that moment and i don't want to be a fan of that team anymore the difference was i if i remember correct the habs were not in this position they had come off of like several pretty good seasons um i mean carrie price was obviously carrie price i want to say he was coming off of the heart or a year removed from the heart they were in a pretty
Starting point is 01:51:02 good spot and I think the argument was they didn't need to do that whereas the Canucks kind of need to do that especially it like Subban wanted to stay there exactly Quinn
Starting point is 01:51:18 there's some questions Subban it felt personal yeah it was I mean it was it was it was Bergevin going no I have the biggest dick here yeah and that's what it was it was it was it was total on on bergevin's side oh he's got a personal remember there's remember the reports out of montreal well he's got a personal company and he goes and and has a brand and we don't like that it would have been better if they just came out and they were
Starting point is 01:51:44 like we like uh we're bigger fans of the way shea weber plays hockey how great would that have it would have aged a lot better you know because hot damn like playoff performer scores a shitload of goals man mountain remember babcock with the man mountain yeah we think he's gonna age better i guess that's not really something you could say that's something that ends up killing you if you're wrong but all that to say we're doing a retrospective on that um i think canucks fans are gonna hate it when quinn gets traded because it is when and not if but they're smart hockey fans they'll all understand it you just need to maximize it um that would be trading him sooner rather than later because that's when the maximum value is because of the contract right you're
Starting point is 01:52:43 getting quinn hughes a top five defenseman in the league at 7.8 million dollars man you want that for one and a half seasons as opposed to one season or a trade deadline run so if you're asking them to maximize this deal it's do it soon what if there's a conditional pick or i don't maybe we don't do it that way anymore but what if it's like a first plus plus plus and then if he signs an extension it's another first yeah that's how it used to get done i don't really know if it gets done that way anymore like he's such an exceptional player that like does a team trade for him even if there's no extension in place it depends on when you're doing it if you're doing it after july 1st then if you are the acquiring team you have to guarantee that that extension comes because it's
Starting point is 01:53:31 it's eligible so i if i'm signing if i'm trading for him i better get the assurance that he is staying here but if it happens in the now times no because you're getting quinn hughes for this year and next year so you make that deal there's a world here where the canucks make out like bandits and they will not have a player like Gwynn Hughes, but they do come out of it better eventually. On the Canucks end, Kiefer Sherwood, Nick Kiprios is saying that he's looking for a five-year contract in excess of $5 million. In a cap world, that's close to 110 next season, if not actually 110, because it is adjustable. I know they've announced the numbers, but they can always adjust up and they're making way more money than they've thought that they
Starting point is 01:54:17 woods so they're gonna do fine is keifer sherwood at less than five percent of your cap doable that's really not unreasonable at all i would like somebody to score like 20 goals for that amount of money okay like he's gonna do it is he last year he scored 19 okay and that was a normal season well a normalish he seems to be growing into the role yeah and and let me ask you this is keifer sherwood playing the role he's playing with the canucks on a great team because this is this is the thing like is keifer sherwood on a stanley cup winning team let's say on the abs is he anything above a third liner well third line can win you a cup i agreed but i'm just asking you know what's your money allocation per line you know on dallas which is one of the lowest
Starting point is 01:55:02 loaded forward groups in the league where's keifer sherwood fit in that line that's my question doesn't fit in at five million dollars like to me keifer sherwood is the perfect guy you go get at the trade deadline for 1.5 I'll pay the sun and the moon I'll pay everything for him for this little playoff run but to sign him that sounds like one of those mistakes you make you look back on those contracts you're like you gave Kiefer Sherwood six million dollars right over six years to be on your third line like that to me is crazy I know but cap going up he's also a bit of a unicorn like there aren't a ton of players who play like him where they can give you x amount of goals and x amount of hits and the thing that happens with those guys is the goal part falls off they
Starting point is 01:55:47 get over they do they they get over 30 like this isn't a player who's been doing this 30 yeah he's a late bloomer late bloomer late no but he's not blooming he's kind of he's he's kind of squeezing into the mud and just kind of being what he is now like he's settling into a career like what i'm shocked by yeah he's 30 yeah he's he's not he's not 23 and growing into a flower but i think he's figured out that they're the the most wanted and least available quality in the nhl is gigantic physical winger that can score tom wilson matthew olivier matthew nize had put in there um you know who else like there are so few true true blue power forward options tom wilson someone who's been doing it for 15 years yes matthew nye's 23 years old yep like i agree he's
Starting point is 01:56:39 he's a he's a guy who's figured out this year and i'm willing to pay for that to give him the six years over six or 5.5 that's a million bucks basically yeah that's crazy yeah i think that's a lot too but again if he continues to perform at that rate and you know i mean you're basically you're signing key for sherwood to at least 36 or 37 because he's going to be 31 when the contract clicks it this to me sounds like nashville made a mistake oh oh my god you think like yeah they just let him walk didn't they yeah that's right yeah no but like they'll bring him back yeah and and barry trotz makes a mistake in signing him yeah he was the straw that stirred the um like okay he was the straw that stirred the that's funny so this season and last season
Starting point is 01:57:28 combined Radko Gudis and Paul Cotter are tied for 10th and hits at 310 then it's 330 339 339 362 366 371 377 Will Cooley at 393 Kiefer Sherwood 568 wow wow wow and he's scoring the way he's scoring yeah he's definitely got more goals than like any of those guys the the guys in this conversation are key for sure with will cooley matthew olivier who you know gives you less offense but some than he provides yeah he's the top heavyweight in the league nathan walker jack mcbain yakov trennan luke shen garnett hathaway marcus felino marcus felino to me strikes as like the only guy who's even sort of close. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:58:25 Maybe you overpay for a unicorn. Can I give you two stats? Yes. Hit me in the face. One, Kiefer Sherwood right now in his average time on ice, highest of his entire career. He's playing 17 minutes
Starting point is 01:58:38 and 44 seconds for the Canucks per game. His previous career high was last season with the Canucks, 1453. Okay. Yep. Other stat, where we started this whole show, shooting percentage keifer sherwood here we go is shooting 24 oh boy yeah and he has 12 goals
Starting point is 01:58:57 in 26 games but even last year 13.5 isn't like insane no that's about good that's that's career average he's shot 12 before he shot 11 shot 9 13 is doable that's 19 goals and 21 assists i think you can be pretty confident that's a double digit goal score like even the last season in nashville like 10 goals as a 12 minute a night player like I am confident he can give you I'm confident he's a very good middle six player I think he can play on your second line I loved him in the playoff spot work on the first line and will I mean is probably overqualified for third line if that makes sense he's playing a lot of minutes even on the Canucks third line currently you know he's getting the minutes like the time on ice is different because obviously
Starting point is 01:59:48 it's deployment and everything and garland and besser have both been down at different points yeah they're swapping in and out and like things look different than what's on paper i would say that about the least but i think if you were paying him five to six million dollars and he's putting up 15 goals for you for the next six seasons until he's 36 you would be very unhappy with that contract on your team steve yeah if he's a leaf and for six million five point five million dollars and he puts up 15 goals you'd be screaming at him like you scream at Michele you know what Jesse
Starting point is 02:00:18 or Cali yeah you got mad at Cali Yarncroft like his next deal his next deal is going to be the optimist curse because I just I look at him and I go but what if it works out if he was a leaf you would
Starting point is 02:00:34 be pissed you're not wrong the stands would be full of Sherwood jerseys and they'd be 25 and 30 like come trade yeah I understand
Starting point is 02:00:50 but the price someone pays for him is going to be genuinely funny this year pay for like 1.5 it's crazy man give them a first if there's a guy 1.5 million dollars there's a guy on the Canucks I'm willing to pay the key for sure would price for
Starting point is 02:01:06 it's Connor Garland I love that well there's a lot more proof of concept yes uh yeah type of offensive player he can be he's and i know he's quote unquote undersized but he doesn't play like who gives a shit that guy rocks there's a few guys where it doesn't matter and he's one of them yeah you want a first rounder i'll give you the first round for connor connor garland all day you'd be lucky to draft a player as good as connor garland in the first round lucky they just inked him to the new deal i know but apparently his name's out there
Starting point is 02:01:36 really yeah and he's got no trade protection until next season so they can trade him they inked them under the assumption they weren't going to be bad and uh they are david camp by the way i just want to check in uh six games no points minus two yeah maybe the leafs knew something well you couldn't make their lineup when they had no centers well well it's i i didn't want to tweet this because it's never a good idea to tweet this but i saw canucks fans go like yeah well he's on the second line and i'm like i went to a game where he was on the second line and he scored and the leafs won amazing it was uh last year new year's eve or new year's day against the islanders jesse can we do a press conference sure two and five canadians will hear the words
Starting point is 02:02:27 you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca the steve dangle press conference first question uh do you want to dump on me steve always okay why rangers yes i forgot they lost on saturday oh so i kept saying four game winning streak they were on a three game winning streak and then saturday they lost to tampa so everything i was saying about a four game winning streak
Starting point is 02:03:25 currently on it incorrect you're still right there have a loss on the table right does that change your opinion on jonathan quick being available immediately no okay uh so there's yes oh trade them admitted right now it's uh i think it's a fun idea um this one is from i'm gonna say zahid daya who says okay if grok could get out of the way all right this says who are the guys that elon i hate you who are the guys that could get traded if toronto is out of the playoff picture you make a list of the guys who are on the table to be moved uh i mean carlo a million percent yarn croak um domi uh i would think you probably well,
Starting point is 02:04:21 Michele is already on the list, whether they make the playoffs or not. Remember how you overpaid for Lawton? Yeah. What if?
Starting point is 02:04:29 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I honestly, though, I have to say I think Scott Lund's a guy I'd want to keep around. They finally have four good centers.
Starting point is 02:04:35 Just just don't touch it. It'd be nice. I think the centers are fine. You don't touch that. Is wall locked up? Not long term, I don't think, but he is he is
Starting point is 02:04:44 under contract. I don't think you need to strip it totally down. No, I think you're just rejigging like they needed some bets to work out and it didn't and also they got bit by the injury bug like someone to go to joshua i think could have a pretty bad season and people would still take someone would still overpay for him i'm looking for nick why he's got another three million next
Starting point is 02:05:02 year it's a valuable player that's a valuable player yeah but i think you just spent how much time trying to find four flipping centers like you just basically after you traded nazim kadri it's been a revolving door of who dis and i think you need you finally have with lawton uh with matthews with tavarez and with what those are that's a pretty good center group leave that you need to recoup some assets and you need to spend your cap space cleverly yeah this upcoming off season and one way you can spend it cleverly is by not having to sign a center because you got four of them um you get like one mark ed you still have a lot of guys locked up yep like this could be a like a fairly quick turnaround if it's one season where you go ah and you could collect
Starting point is 02:05:54 some pretty good assets right uh robert like yeah so yarn croak robertson lotten is a ufa next year so they're gonna have to work out an extension there i think he's been really valuable i don't think that's a player robert give up excuse me lotten a lot um mcmahon's a guy that's interesting because this is the last year of his deal and he will be a ufa his speed is is really good but his consistency you know he struggles with that he he's a hugely inconsistent player the redeeming factor for him this year is he's he's starting to play more the way a third liner should okay he's battling more he's digging more he's like i think if we got a little bit more of this in the playoffs he would have been more useful yeah um like i just don't know if you're getting the
Starting point is 02:06:36 sun and the moon for a lot of these guys no i think which is why i immediately went to carlo yeah carlo i think you could get significant so the real now this is one that i'm starting to get more i just want to listen to guys i don't know if that's going to take so long oh do you do you want to move on the second question or do you want to do more leave segment no i think that's good if both goalies are healthy and the team is still no good people are going to start asking about the goalies getting one of them yeah and that'll be fascinating okay second thing we have a comment on the discord server that i hope lights a fire under steve dangle this is from bardy bardy says i'm new to the discord server discord server but a long time listener and i get a kick out of
Starting point is 02:07:30 listening to steve talk about his beer league performances oh here we go because i'm in the london branch of the same league oh so i can see his stats on the league's website and as someone who didn't learn how to play hockey until i was an adult i think i'm of a similar skill level to him almost every week though i'll check his stats to see if i'm beating him in points and i am with seven assists to steve's seven assists and three assists i feel slightly embarrassed to admit that being better than steve is motivating is a motivating factor every week of beer league man i would absolutely love if there was a weekly steve's beer league adventures we're not going to do weekly i think that'd be a little too much uh for your really really good ventures uh he would
Starting point is 02:08:19 he would do it if we let him uh the way steve talks about it is very entertaining so bardy is watching your stats and trying to track them down every week listen i'm a shitty hockey player this is my first foray into playing any kind of hockey that counts um we play once a week so these games mean a lot to me and yesterday every week it's your super bowl yesterday a team that we haven't beaten they have two comeback wins against us and they pumped us six two so how do you think i'm feeling today not good i went to bed mad woke up mad but did you get a point fuck no no no no it was like a minus four it was brutal oh torture and i i had new skates i felt great in them
Starting point is 02:09:09 puck kept hitting the back of our neck the weirdest thing yes okay oh i got a shout out tough um ethan and brendan uh at uh pro hockey life and whitby who i called ahead because they closed at nine and i called it like seven i was like what is the latest i can come in and shop for a new pair of skates without being an asshole because i know it's not like a i'll take one pair of skates please yeah they do the 3d scan of your feet i tried a bunch on despite the 3d scan i put on a pair i was like not even close to wide enough because my foot is basically a square um ended up getting a pair of bauer supremes um they baked them they sharpened them they did everything in store and i was gone right before close nice it was great okay nice okay but uh
Starting point is 02:09:59 i still was bad that's tough on new skates your first time out yeah oh my uh i forgot all about it like it was a little uncomfortable um skating out there was my first time and i forgot about it and this morning i got in the shower and water ran down my legs and i went because it's i got like a skate bite or whatever that oh yeah oh ah fuck yeah yeah so that hurt um but what hurt more was getting shit bombed six two how do you feel knowing that bardy's out there with seven assists and you got three uh well now i'm gonna get out there and just friggin wreck shop because it's gonna be my motivation to be better than bardy but you piece of crap you do have two goals and he did not specify how many goals yes yeah find the back of the net you friggin pigeon so
Starting point is 02:10:57 zero goals and seven assists and your two goals three assists i don't know i might like you the goal scorer steve dangle a little better you know you have to ask do i have a more versatile game exactly oh yeah you're doing more out there wow you don't play center though do you uh i can play center and i'm a i'm a massive defensive liability i can imagine okay yeah but adam's like scrolling twitter he's so out of i'm just i'm waiting for this segment in he hates this entire conversation yesterday i found my uh face off muscle i did okay in the face oh there you go and uh me and one of my line mates i was like okay what if i take the face off and then immediately go to left wing and you come in and play center because i suck i like that that works yeah no you don't
Starting point is 02:11:43 i like it as much as i like this segment all right it's my favorite oh and another thing all right i wish i was better that's it for us uh we will be back on wednesday and I'm going to do a stream tomorrow night so it'll be Leafs, Panthers and me on your STPN watch along I'm going to live stream me talking about beer league STPN The Steve Dangle Podcast
