in Maple Leafs franchise history.
In 1917, 1918, it was 27.

That's an average of nine goals a game.
Well, that's when people scored 10 goals in a Stanley Cup game.

In 2017, 2018, the Leafs have 19.

I mean, they're not as good as we were 100 years ago.
I mean, Austin Matthews and William Nylander and Mitch Marner need to step it up

Last night was a 4-3 overtime wicked game between the Leafs and Blackhawks.
That was a fun game.
It was a fun game, but in comparison, I'm like, ah, that was pretty tame.
Yeah, well, I thought the tame game was Winnipeg.
That was the Leafs' most boring game of the season so far.
What?
No, I know.
Winnipeg was the most boring game of the season.
The correct answer is there have been no boring games because they've won them all.
It's true.
There you go.
And, you know, I mean, we start from the beginning here.
It seemed like the Leafs were out to a good start.
And like the Blackhawks do, they find one way to beat you.
Then they exploit that way, and then they find another way, and they exploit that way.
Yeah, Mitch Marner.
Yeah, banging off Mitch Marner's elbow.
Unbelievable.
What was interesting was the Blackhawks really dominated the second half of the first period.
But in true Blackhawks style, came out with two goals up from it.
Like, they finish.
They finish.
See, this game, or the first period in particular, was a good example of your eyes being dirty, smelly liars.
Because that's how I saw it, too.
I saw it as the way Ken Campbell saw it when he tweeted, poor guy.
He tweeted, you know, this is just a master class.
The three-time Stanley Cup champions schooling the Toronto Maple Leafs.
And then, of course, they come back and I'm like, oh, Ken.
Ken's a nice guy, I promise.
They dominated the second half of the first period, but I felt like the rest of the game was the Leafs.
I agree, but even in the first period, the numbers are overwhelmingly Leafs.
Really?
Which I didn't expect at all.
And Patrick Marleau, I was going to say, his best game is a Leaf.
I don't care if he scored two goals in the first game.
Nope, negative possession player.
But that's not the be-all, end-all.
He did some things that I thought were really good.
The Matthews line was ridiculous.
Have you seen the numbers for that?
Well, I got a couple.
That's one where you didn't need the numbers, but now that you have them, it's even better.

Well, this is according to James Myrtle.
But Austin Matthews at the beginning of the third period was only on pace for 60 minutes of ice time
because of all the penalties called.
It's ridiculous.
He played the majority of his ice time against Keith Seabrook and Kane.
Apparently 84% possession.
And the even strength shot attempts

For the first period or second period?
I think it was the whole game
That'd be a lot for one period

Of what is supposed to be one of the best lines in hockey

It was that goal that seemed like it was never going to come,
and it was this weird floater against the Penguins.

So, I mean, I have to say.

And at this point in the game,
I don't know if you guys felt the same way,
I was frustrated.
I was sitting there gnashing my teeth,
and it might have just been I was tired
and maybe a little hungover from Thanksgiving,
but I felt like it was just frustrating
with all the penalty calls.
And it didn't even have to be against the Leafs.
It was just like another whistle.

It was four on three for a little bit.

It's hilarious.
And like, I just
I don't know the
Sport anymore, it seems
I saw some people
Going, oh, you know, you see that goal
And how could you not like what hockey's

These days, and it's the NHL's
fault that it looks terrible. It's the
NHL's fault that the players are having
such a difficult time adjusting through three games
granted it's just three games so far
at least for the Leafs
because they've had these rules written
they didn't change a damn thing
it's that they're calling it the way it's written
it just looks like
trash and the
flow is awful. It's supposed to be this
free flowing game
I think this is
short term suffering for what
will make the game better long term
But right now it just looks like trash
So it's frustrating to follow

Freddie's allowed 10 goals through three games,
and I have a difficult time faulting him for more than maybe two.

I don't want anyone to get the impression that we're blaming that on the refs.
I think there's a lot of blown coverage going on with the Leafs' defense right now.

Again, extremely early.

I mean, I'm the guy who gets frustrated with Jake Gardner, so what do I know?
But Borgman, I just like him more.
Now, it was Borgman that I wanted to bring up because it led to the Richard Panic goal, Jesse, that you were talking about.
That ridiculous bounce.
The Borgman hit was bone-crushing.
And we've seen this, like, when I saw them play at Rico Coliseum a couple Fridays ago
when I paid way too much for preseason tickets.
Still don't regret it, by the way.
But you could be going to a game now for the same price.
For 100 plus.
Anyway, Andreas Borgman laid a guy out on Buffalo.

And it felt like that hit on Debrinkat was one of those that you could feel it.
And you want hits like that.
You want clean, booming hits like that.
However, from my angle on the television, which I realize makes me just a fan,
it looked like Brindacat was at least going to play the puck in the corner.

Was that intentional?
No, I don't think it was.

And then, of course, you know, he lets it kind of go by.
And then all of a sudden it's an interference call.
I don't blame Borgman for laying the hit.
I don't blame the ref for making the call.
Interference is when you hit the guy
And he doesn't have the puck
He didn't have the puck
Borgman's job is to stop the guy who has the puck
It looked like he was about to have the puck
And he hit him
What are you going to do?
And it's a late call too
To me it felt like
I don't know I'd have to go back and watch the replay again
See I wasn't paying attention I was just like
Oh he's dead
To me if Debrin Cat gets up
I don't know that they would have called it
I mean that
Really?
I think if he gets up there, I know that, listen, I know that's a hot take.
I know there's a lot of people out there who disagree, but I feel it in my bones.
If Debrin Cat had gotten up and was fine, and of course he takes a moment that was a hard hit,
that, I think, is not necessarily a penalty.
I think it's just a late hit that they let go.
We sort of talked about it last year during the playoffs before the big rule change.
The refs are willing to ignore a lot of stuff, and even still, they're willing to ignore a lot of stuff.
But if it affects possession, if it affects possession, it's right there.
They have no choice but to make the call.
You know, Dabrinkat missed the puck, but he could have gone and got it.
Nope, got crushed.
It affected possession.
There's your power play.
Yep.
So then we have the puck bounce off the end of the board somehow, some way.
Darth Vader, Star Wars, Force bullshit.
It goes to Richard Ponick right on his fucking tape.

Three goals in three games.
Three goals, and he scores.
Hilarious.
And it has to be Richard Ponick that puts him up 3-1.
Has to be.
So then, and I think, Steve, you touched on this in your video,
the question becomes, okay, so this is a goal-scoring team that we cheer for.

Is this the opportunity?
Is this where they're going to go and hide and go,
okay, well, we've lost this one, and it's against a good team,
and you know what, we'll get them next time?
Yeah.
Or do they try and maybe push and tie this up?
Well, this is the thing.
Defense wins the championships, allegedly,
because the Leafs
can score, score, score, score, score
and then the Rangers game happens
oh, they tied it. Guess you're gonna have to
score some more goals and then they went out and did that
they won that game by three goals
Leafs are down late in the game
what's the other team gonna do?
Crawl on a turtle shell like every NHL team
ever. No NHL team
has ever been like, we're up two goals in the third
let's continue scoring. That's
just, I don't know why
but every single team, right from the
Bums to the champions.
Do it.
If you're going to do that and let the other team come to you,
and the other team is the Leafs, yeah, take advantage of that.
And the Leafs in this one proved that they're capable of a late-game comeback.
Now, they required some good fortune, too, just like the Blackhawks.
That Connor Brown goal sucked.
That sucked.
Like, Connor Brown deserved it.
He had a great game.
But Anton Forsberg made a bunch of saves that he probably shouldn't have.
So one of them is bound to go in.
Fine, but that goal sucked.
Like, I get it
It all evens out
That was a very Jonas Gustafsson
Circa the Leafs game
Where, yeah, okay, you made all those saves
And I appreciate that
But what about the one that went in?
That was freaking terrible
Man, Gustafsson allowed goals that I still remember

I haven't forgotten
Anyway, and then
The JVR goal

Darren Millard made an interesting point on Hockey Central.
At least I think this was the point he was trying to make.
I was driving.
I was paying attention to the road.
The puck was along the ice.
And pucks along the ice, you hope the goalie stops.
But takes a weird deflection off JVR's skates.
Almost looked intentional, didn't it?

I thought it looked like an NHL 3's goal.
Like I thought, like, you know, like when...
The lights in the arena dim.
Yeah, well, the computer scores accidentally on itself,
and the computer's not really sure what's going on
and then it happens?
Like, that's what it felt like.
And then they slam their stick
and accidentally high stick their own teammate in the head.
Yeah.
Seen that.
It looked exactly like that.
JVR, like, the celebration wasn't this big thing.
It was just like, yeah, I knew it.
I knew it.
Release, we score goals.
Yeah, big surprise.
And then what followed was my favorite game,
which is, it's a tie game, late in the third.
We're not in the same conference.
Let's just pass the puck back and forth.
well and it's like
we're both tied for first
in the NHL right now
because they were
at the time

each get a point out of this
everybody walks home happy
yeah I'm sure
if you were to ask them
they would tell you

And I was just going to say, he did.
Three minutes left, and I'm like, oh my god, no!
And they killed it.
And again, just such a...
I want to know, you couldn't possibly track this, but what percentage of penalty calls last year would not be penalty calls?
Well, Jake Gardner got a couple penalties last night for the exact same thing.
And it was that, it's when he gets beat on his weak side, because he's a lefty, right?
Yes.
So he gets beat, and he flips around, and his stick is about mid-level, and it's basically a way to catch the guy and slow him down a little bit, and you used to be able to do that and kind of tug him and then let go, but now when he does it, he flips around, that stick is mid-level, and it hits him right in the gloves, and the refs are like, yeah.
Like a scythe.
It was both the penalties were the exact same call.
And there's another guy who the new rules are so strange for
Because they're going to hinder him defensively even more
But they're going to allow him to score crazy Bobby Orgles
Like he did, I think it was in the Jets game

Or was it the Rangers game? I don't know
He's looked so good through three games, offensively

And that's what I remember, right?
Another guy struggling with those calls a little bit
Well, you know there's a crackdown when Connor Brown's getting penalties
That guy doesn't take penalties
But Hyman is really seeming to have trouble with that.
And he can't be taking penalties because he's a key penalty killer for the Leafs.
But, you know, Babcock loves him.
Sheldon Keefe loved him.
Always big in the video sessions.
I have faith that he'll learn, but hurry up.
I have to say, when he has been on the ice five on five this year,
we've seen the Zach Hyman described to us by management.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I don't understand the complaint.
His forechecking is truly amazing.
Best in the league!
Well, I don't know about that.

Babcock said it. I thought it was funny.
Well, good. That's great.
If that's what Babcock believes, I'm not going to sit here and go,
I watched all 30 teams and know definitively.
Because I don't.
Fair.
But I will say, that's a guy that I've never seen a Leaf player ever forecheck like that
and always come up with the puck.
The closest comparable I've ever seen who worked that hard was Gary Roberts.
And I'm not saying Gary Roberts and Zach Hyman are the same thing
But Gary Roberts was like
He's like a bulldog
You ever seen a bulldog go after a toy
And then just lockjaw on it
That's what they do
The video for the Rangers game I shoved a puck in my mouth
And just pretended to be Zach Hyman and started barking
No he's rabid
If he had one real thing
Holding him back
It's that he just doesn't have
He looks slow out there
But I think the reason he looks slow
Is because his line mates are Matthews and Nylander
Oh, are they fast?
They're a little bit fast.
And he just doesn't have the step to get away from opponents that his line mates do.
There's so many times where he cuts to the center of the ice and he has a chance.
Again, I go back to the Rangers game and he did end up getting a goal or two.
But he does the same things that Matthews and Nylander do a lot of the time.
But because he's one step behind those guys
He's got two or three defenders hanging off of him at all times
Now that's the big advantage he has
That's how he draws calls
Zach Hyman also draws a lot of calls
And draws people away from Matthews and Nylander
Oh, again, I go back to the Rangers game
No one's looking at Nylander
Three guys looking at Hyman
If Hyman is so not dangerous
I have no problem with him being on that line
And I think the first few games should be
They should put that to bed
And the thing is you don't need
Matthews and Nylander to have a third guy
You just need Matthews and Nylander
They do have a third guy
They're so good on their own they'll be fine

and I thought they looked good.

And they're still pretty great.

It's probably going to end up being the shutdown line this year again.
Except Marleau instead of Komarov.
And then when you throw Matthews out there,
you don't even have to worry about those other guys.
Right.
So you're the home team.
You get the matchups you want.

You should never ice a bad player
If you ice a bad player in 3-on-3 overtime
You're either a bad coach or have a bad team

I'm not saying it's the wrong strategy

It was Matthews' second time on the ice by the time he scored.
Why not put Matthews up against McDavid?
And they put Kadri up there.
But that's different because it's not during overtime.

I liked that.
I actually enjoyed that.

I understand the reasoning behind that.
They frustrated me a bit because they didn't pull the trigger
But they had the puck the whole time
I also think it was kind of smart
On Mike Babcock's part because I believe they changed
They did that on the fly
So I don't think they had to take a face off
He's been really subtly
Every now and then
Just tinkering with the lines
Like didn't I see
It was like Brown
Was it Brown, Bozak, Marleau
Something like that
Every now and then
He just throws out a line where I go, is this a weird line change or is that the line he's thrown out?
And I like the face-off thing that he's doing where you take the face-off on your strong side.
So Nylander will take face-offs, which is good for him.
It's good for his development.
Komarov will take face-offs.
I think that's kind of cool.
I don't think JVR and Bozak are switching off and Marner, I don't think so.
But you can do it.
If you're Nylander, it's a contract here.
If you start doing too good in the face-off circle, just start blowing them.
Just start losing faceoffs on purpose
Why?
Because I never want to be taken off of Matthews' line ever
I'm not going to be a center in this league
