Starting point is 00:00:56 Discover Coffee Plus on Nespresso.com. sometimes you gotta clear the pipes before the show starts bless you adam thank you thank you hey uh shout out to everybody who signed up for sdp vip an extra episode a week it's a dollar as they say in Buffalo. So $4 a month gets you SDP, VIP, and honestly, all the comments on the YouTube video for it because you can do YouTube and you can do Apple Music right now.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Spotify's coming. Apple Podcasts. Apple Podcasts. Excuse me. Excuse me. Very different because Apple Podcasts, they didn't sponsor the halftime show. Apple Music did. It's very different. There are different apps on your phone. Apple Podcasts. But yeah, the comments on the YouTube video were amazing. Like, yeah, everybody's like, let's party!
Starting point is 00:01:52 There's a little emoji you get next to your username now so if you're on the channel and you're an sdp vip there's a little steve head um and as the months go along it works if you're familiar with twitch it works similar to twitch where as the months go along the longer you are a subscriber the emoji changes so after like three months it'll be a different little thing and after six months it'll be different and yeah so it's kind of fun i like that and all the comments that said we should have charged more shut up what shut up no i saw those like i was like okay i just want this to be good value for people and like a few people were like oh this is definitely worth it and then a
Starting point is 00:02:30 bunch of people like oh man they should charge more i'm like fuck you yeah don't tell me that well the whole point was to make it as affordable as they could as we could for literally anybody right like i just don't you know it's it's the times are crazy out there and i just you know want you to get great value for your time by the way you will have another episode this week um every week every single week so it's it's happening sdp vip check it out um what do you want to talk about i know that morgan riley is going to come up yeah we're not going to start there though no we're not starting there make them wait we're starting at at the worst take in human history which is producer drew mid usher performance last night saying it was the worst
Starting point is 00:03:13 halftime of all time wait so he called it a mid-usher performance or he or this happened in the middle of the performance no this was mid-performance and he actually said it was the worst oh who's on second um you know if you if you pay attention you watch your super bowl halftime shows you know that there were some pretty rusty bands uh when we were in high school like i love all the bands that were on but i can tell you the who were terrible um they were absolutely brutal And the only thing that saved the halftime show, I think the next year was Prince. And he was amazing. Well, I remember Prince.
Starting point is 00:03:46 I don't remember the Who. I remember the Rolling Stones. They were good. Coldplay was good, but had to bring out people. You know, that performance to me was very, very cool. And even Drew, by the end of it, was like, okay, it was fine. Well, okay. I will give Drew this.
Starting point is 00:04:04 The beginning of the show was just, I have a lot of songs. and like okay i get it you have a lot of songs perhaps play more than five seconds of them yes yes like i was like oh he's starting with my way it's done yeah yeah didn't i say this on the show it's done it's the longest uh it's the longest super bowl halftime show in history thus far does it was no i didn't know that rihanna's felt way longer yeah because it didn't it wasn't as good well they brought the roller skates that was uh i thought the roller skates bit was fantastic that was awesome yes what blew my mind is how good usher is on roller skates like i would expect the hired people the hired dancers to be good at it like are you like on your resume is it
Starting point is 00:04:50 good are you good at roller skating but usher was like forwards backwards through will i am's legs like yep almost fell it was also just a who's who of who's aged really well like ludicrous looked great i'm glad he went with the afro as opposed to the cornrows because afro ludicrous is more old school and that's like that's what we were channeling there we were like we want to see the luda from our high school days you know so it's cool to see that 100 intentional him and usher look the same yeah as they did in 2003 yeah or whatever alicia keys got some shit for that first note uh and her voice is always raspy so i kind of get it but you gotta you gotta hit the first no raspy or pitchy jesse whoa simon simon i'm a big fan of miss keys so i don't want to talk
Starting point is 00:05:38 shit yeah it wasn't great but that's okay it's a live performance you know what i respect about her and usher and uh everybody actually is they weren't playing to a tape they were yeah they were singing thing i said when usher came out and you hear his mic you're like oh that's a person talking through a microphone fantastic that's that's real and like and a lot of people come out and they're like they're they're like strumming along with their instruments but they're not plugged in like the music has been pre-recorded they did it on a sound stage it sounds live but it's not these guys usher usher was spectacular and he did sing every note and so did alicia and good for her yeah i i do feel bad for her detriment what was that to her detriment no she
Starting point is 00:06:17 she picked it up at the end yeah it was a really hard if that's how that note is like a mountain to climb the start there was uh it was hard yeah i felt bad for one person who well people were like oh it's usher oh ludicrous is here hey it's alicia keys is that celo green oh and it was not celo green who was it it was jermaine dupree he looks different now that he's lost weight no he looks like jermaine dupree it's just not as many people know who that is he's also aged yeah like he's an old man now yeah yeah he's not an old man he's in his 50s no he's not his 50s yeah hold on i gotta look this up he's 51 he's whoa oh my god yeah you know why jesse it's not 2003 i guess so yeah i guess so and and you know uh uh little john john brought the vibes oh little
Starting point is 00:07:09 john sounds exactly the same which is crazy because his your as your voice ages it's harder to hit well i know he just yells but like it's still harder to do the captain picard of voices it got old fast and then stayed the same age forever yeah yeah it was good to see little john there was a there was a bet um uh would alicia keys will i am little john and ludicrous all come out and they all did so that really hit yeah it was a good one i was there will i am was there yeah yeah he had that he had the space helmet yeah you couldn't see his face oh that's who that was yeah he's in the song dude he was talking he's the guy saying oh my god you know okay i didn't know that because he was wearing a freaking space helmet but that's very will i
Starting point is 00:07:55 he was standing front and center and i'm watching going i'm supposed to know who this is yeah i don't yes i had no idea that was he's always got like i'll give will i am credit he's a tough interview man he's not not a fun guy to interview but um why have you interviewed him yes and and i did not enjoy it uh because he he wants you to be uncomfortable the entire time he doesn't like being interviewed fine but um one of the things that uh i i really respected about the way he came out is he's always he always rises to the occasion when when it's time to come out and put on like a space age performance you know what i mean and he he did it he brought the space age he's not very personable you know never say that about will i am no no you can't accuse him of
Starting point is 00:08:37 that he does well when fergie doesn't have to sing the national anthem is that what you're that's what i'm saying um there's i'm trying to think of what else happened in that halftime just feel like a lot happened yes you know i was i thought it threw me off when he came out and he wasn't on a stage when he was just on the field and doing all that dancing i was like what's going on here and they walked over to the stage i was like ah the performances now we're getting going and all this stuff so i feel like that's that it contributed to the slow start that you were talking about steve i felt the same way i was a little slow i was too fast yeah like there's a lot of popping the pop lock and dropping yeah in the square he does it in the square it took
Starting point is 00:09:15 yeah it took a turn for the for the better as soon as he put on his leather jacket with abs as soon as the leather abs came out that was a good one i i did when he got up on stage i was like god that guy's like 15 years older than me look at look what he's doing it's crazy oh mrs dangle went uh how old is usher and i went shut up stop asking questions mind your business i mean watch the show what she turns to see what's your excuse she didn't say that verbatim yeah but it was pretty loud and clear oh the the last thing um a lot of people got on usher for um the caressing of alicia keys and everyone's yelling they're saying swiss beats is gonna come out and slap you like will smith yeah because no
Starting point is 00:10:02 one's ever done that on stage before no no one's ever faked being in love when the song my boo comes he has a history with alicia in no in the fall he at his show in vegas he goes up to kiki palmer and he says kiki palmer let's let's do a little i'm gonna sing to you for a little bit and then uh her her i think it was fiancee at the time i'm not sure if they're married um gets upset and they end up breaking up and now usher's going to another taken woman and he's doing a little hey i'm usher i'm hot and everyone's like watch out alicia okay i want you to do yourself a favor when you do when you get home internet drop when you get home tonight i want you to google swiss beats and alicia keys homes it was on uh selling uh no not selling sunset it was on like
Starting point is 00:10:47 a million dollar listing la and it was on architectural digest it was also that too it was it was on million dollar listing la josh altman had it yes okay and this house it's in san diego it's a it's a it's a community center slash space station it's enormous i don't know i don't know that swiss bees is going to be worried about it kiki palmer it sounds like the fiance they were already pretty close like if usher dancing with usher on stage which i think most people would say yes to if usher wanted to caress me i would fall into his arms he flipped my wife eight times and it really bothered me oh my god i feel like that relationship was on its way out Which beats does I think you should leave?
Starting point is 00:11:30 Oh, my goodness. There was many other things going on with Darius Jackson and Keke Palmer. I don't know much about Darius Jackson. Should I know much about him? No, not a good dude. Not a good dude? Not a good dude. Okay, well, it sounds like she...
Starting point is 00:11:43 Hey, I want to do this. Let's do the BetMGM big story right now. Jesse, I need to know. Did you take the over or the under on Reba McIntyre's national anthem? So we talked about this on Friday, and I took the over, and it hit. Oh, it did hit. Yeah, it hit not by a lot, because she was quick. But there was a little moment, especially at the end, where she held the brave.
Starting point is 00:12:10 That really paid off, and it hit over 90 and a half seconds. But my whole thing going in was that we're not going to set the world record here for fastest national anthem at the Super Bowl. It's got to go over, and it did. So lucky me. So are you sitting there when she's holding the note going, all right shut up yeah stop no well he bet the over i have the i have the uh yeah i'm going oh yeah oh yeah you keep going come on reba come on reba you're yelling at her like a racehorse i got
Starting point is 00:12:37 the stopwatch going like on the on the uh on the iphone app just on the clock app and i'm sitting there i'm like okay we're getting it's like a minute 15 and we're nearly at the end and i'm getting a little worried so yeah it hit okay this is very important because i didn't know this when the anthem started playing does the clock start at the first note that the the musicians play or the first oh that she like vocalization yeah so it that's a contentious point with some sports books and some some uh gambling companies and how they rule that but for for me and i for most books it's when the first note hits in of music that's when the song starts yeah as opposed to when the the singer starts singing but usually it's it's it doesn't affect the line but it can
Starting point is 00:13:24 get close man yeah it's cool uh what else did you uh you came out positive i did because i hit a four-leg parlay wow wow that that just pushed me over because it was it was a good little payday it was like four to one um so that was good it was it was what was it the overtime is the only reason i hit everything because because i needed because mcafree needed to hit over i took an alt line it was like over 77 yards and he was at uh less than that when the game ended and then went to overtime and he passed it so i i got uh i got that one that one cashed in there was also mccaffrey anytime td mahomes over his passing yardage and brock purdy over his passing yardage as well which went over in overtime like for both of them uh no mahomes was over already in the
Starting point is 00:14:11 in the regular portion and then brock purdy went over in the overtime so yeah the overtime got me the the extra legs of the parlay which was awesome could you i i know it's not the greatest comeback in in super bowl history but could this go down as one of the top that has to be one of the greatest games in in super bowl from an entertainment aspect yeah yeah well like great comeback is easy because that's 28 to 3 tom brady falcons that's crazy but in terms of like mahomes legacy great comeback we get overtime it's a it's a third super bowl in a row two in a row two in a row third in his career during his career right yeah yeah um yeah it's it's up there with a like the drama filled superbowls i didn't realize they'd been to four of the last five superbowls yeah that's
Starting point is 00:14:53 actually crazy yeah he's he's never uh not played in the conference championship game every hour every single year that he's been in the national football league he has been in the conference championship game and he's either gone to the super or lost there in a close game now i'm wait i know it's way too early but would you put money on the chiefs three p.m because that is yeah yeah no there's a there was a lot of talk during the summer doing the the betting like ahead of time when you're picking the super bowl winner and all that stuff and it's the value right now is you just take the chiefs in july at five to one and then you sit on that for the year like that's a better bet than any other team right now because you're guaranteed
Starting point is 00:15:32 like they're going to be in it they're going to be competitive because they have patrick mahomes this was their down year they had their number one wide receiver was a rookie uh their defense struggled at the beginning and that turned out to be one of the best defenses and there it's they travis kelsey was off for most of the regular season and this was supposed to be their down year and they ended up winning the super bowl so damn all they're gonna do is get better this is my my favorite text of the night was from steve and he said that was the greatest last half of football you've ever seen oh it was it was and you're not a football guy no i i'm not at all but I stood I stood from the beginning of the fourth quarter on in front of the tv like did
Starting point is 00:16:11 you have a horse in the game like were you not really I I joined a uh like a like a uh football pool with Drew and his wife there's like a pick sheet oh yeah yeah and like uh it's funny they had a bunch of uh bets to do with uh the anthem and usher and I missed all of them and so I was like well my only shot is if the chiefs win so i don't think i uh i made any noise but um dude that was like that final play of regulation they can choose to win the super bowl but potentially blow it or take the much more likely path to overtime that they could still blow oh my god it was incredible and then they made it there 49ers put up points which means you gotta have to put a point yeah uh it's unbelievable and the biggest thing coming out of today is that the 49ers
Starting point is 00:17:06 weren't very uh up to they didn't really know the overtime rules so because the the chiefs were talking about it in the post game and how they had meetings constantly throughout the week about everything and they covered the overtime rules a couple times in some big meetings and the 49ers players were like yeah we weren't really sure dude it's the super bowl yeah so right now a lot of people are getting on kyle shanahan the head coach about like hey you should know the rules here because it's different now it's this is like the third year that they've had these rules where both teams get the ball and everybody's not used to it yet and they weren't they didn't understand he was low-key one of my favorite parts of the super bowl because every time the camera went
Starting point is 00:17:47 on him i'm like this is either the greatest stoic of our time or he has no idea what's going on and now i know because like on that last possession where you're they kick the field goal and they say okay now casey can go down and score a touchdown win it's like if you know the rules you probably defer you let casey go first and then you know what you're up against that's probably that's the smarter play i think in overtime you don't go first and then at the end it's like okay if we go for it and we get a touchdown then we're still alive no matter what happens and if we miss they still got to go like 60 yards and get a field goal so why don't we just go for it on fourth down and they didn't really think about it that way i the first mistake is you don't take the
Starting point is 00:18:27 ball like you don't get the ball in overtime yeah you defer it but they didn't know the rules oh baby as a non-football fan it's great when the commentator is like that's all that's stupid i wouldn't have done that i'm like yeah why'd they do that that's freaking stupid tony romo's fun Do you guys like Tony Romo on the call? I love Tony Romo. There's been a backlash at Tony Romo this year, and I don't get it. I still think he's really good. So I didn't realize that's who that was.
Starting point is 00:18:52 And hockey fans get upset about using the word shutout. Oh, my God. He, every play, he's like, this has never been done before. Like, right before they're about to snap, and I'm like, ah! Like, just the hockey fan in me recoiled. Don't jinx it. And he did that, like, five times. They're not as superstitious.
Starting point is 00:19:11 They're a little bit more real. They're only a little stitious. That's the BetMGM big story for today. Remember to go to BetMGM.com slash dangle because what do we have coming up? That's right, trade deadline. We got playoffs to worry about. We got lots of stuff.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Check it out, BetMGM.com slash dangle. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. Starting point is 00:20:09 Choose the coffee you love with added B vitamins, like coffee plus b12 to help support immune function and coffee plus b6 to keep your day moving or go with the flow and choose ginseng delight our new double espresso with ginseng extract whatever lies ahead don't change your morning let your morning change you discover coffee plus on espresso.com i uh uh i i i think what i love too you're mentioning tony robo the guy i love too is that he's very good at setting a here's what's at stake you know and we're not great at that in hockey what's at stake here on this play what's at stake at this face-off what's at stake if we did a little bit more of that i think it'd be like oh my god pull
Starting point is 00:20:53 us in now there is a lot at stake morgan riley will have an in-person hearing uh-huh and he's going to new york from what i understand i don't know if he took the zoom option i believe no i I think you can. You can take the in-person on Zoom. Absolutely. And most players do, but I believe he might actually be going. So correct me if I'm wrong. This is the second in-person hearing this season.
Starting point is 00:21:14 That's it. I think Perron was the other one. Perron was the other one. Yeah. All right. Of course. Of course. If you missed the play, I don't know how you could have.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Twitter, up until Taylor Swift took over yesterday, was an absolute bombshell tire fire. And the kind of stuff that I miss. uh I love it oh yeah listen I yeah let's not I'm obviously ignoring the virulent racism no you thought that was awesome yeah no I thumbs up to that no I I'm talking about Ottawa and Toronto fans hating each other I think that's good which was the point I was trying to make in the LFR can I tell you uh I usually think I do a pretty good job at those and the Saturday one was the first one in a long time where I was like I think I might have missed the mark a little why um I
Starting point is 00:22:01 don't i don't i didn't say anything i regret but i talked about the game no one wanted to talk about that no they just wanted to talk about morgan riley and i didn't realize that because sometimes i'm like i try to catch the reaction like i sit there for five ten minutes see what people are talking about and then i shoot my video and obviously people were talking about the thing that just happened but i didn't appreciate enough oh this is all anyone wants to talk about well i don't think you could have i don't think you could have known like you know you do have you actually do have to talk about the game you do have to talk about it that is the brand you do you got to talk about the game sometimes it comes down to a moment and this
Starting point is 00:22:46 one came down to a moment it's all anyone want to talk about yesterday i was at a kid's birthday party everyone was dressed as a princess or spider-man elsa was there the real one and she could sing sang her ass off elsa did and all anyone wanted to talk about they saddle up to me they're like so you know what's riley gonna get and i wonder when everybody who talked to you i wonder if you'd ask them what the score was they probably couldn't tell you i think it was five three but i don't know i think you did the right thing in analyzing the game because i think uh when you take the step back and you do the perspective thing that you had on in the lfr it's like yeah they shouldn't have been in that situation you should beat ottawa a lot of people
Starting point is 00:23:26 didn't want to hear that yeah but who cares what they don't want to hear what they want to hear you're right i mean i'm i yeah i was you should you're like the leafs net shouldn't have been empty because they should be winning yeah like i feel like you were right but in your analysis in the lfr ottawa like we've been saying this all year so it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone But Ottawa is not a true 28 seed. Like, yes, we all know they're better than this, but they simply haven't been. And also injured and also Shane Pinto and also, also, also. But, dude, dude, you shouldn't.
Starting point is 00:24:05 The mistakes that these guys consistently make is so infuriating. So and like, well, you mean the Leafs? Because at least two of those goals, like, I don't think Martin Jones had a great game. But the first two goals that the Leafs allowed were goals. The Leafs went up 1-0. They almost had the 2-0, and then that was called back because Noah Greger. And I know that Steve loves the way Noah Greger plays. Yeah, but I don't believe that goal would have stood up anyways.
Starting point is 00:24:39 No, I think they would have called a kick. No, I think that was going to be called a redirect. But it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter, obviously. It doesn't matter. uh the the point i'm trying to make is that the two goals that ottawa scored right after that are morgan riley to mitch marner in traffic giveaway and terrible like mitch marner to morgan riley it was almost didn't happen and then riley to marner it was like there's like
Starting point is 00:25:02 three guys on i don't know what the what both of those guys were thinking those guys have played together since 2016 and have played with the same coach since 2019 what's going on i thought mitch marner had a generally good game yes they i yes he did have generally a good game riley um the time off that he's about to get might actually do him some good because he's been great all season in these last i'd say two or three games have been uh pretty not good yep yeah and and so the second goal another giveaway another painful sort of it was like it was the least breaking out of their zone giveaway in the neutral zone the sense turn it around use their speed score i mean you got out coached by jacques martin did he get so so hold on because we're
Starting point is 00:25:49 talking about two different things here well you're getting outplayed by the senators yes who by the way love their head coach so much they played him out of a job right right like that's that's how the senator season has gone to this point this ridley greg moment which we'll get to was a key pivotal moment in bringing that team together and i hate it but it's also you kind of have to respect it the did Sheldon Keefe really get out coached by Jacques Martin or are the Leafs just sloppy and unfocused whose whose job is that at the end it might actually be the players well at the beginning of the day uh you're in charge of uh getting up washing your ass uh eating breakfast getting clothed like an adult I get that but um the these coaches make the money
Starting point is 00:26:35 not just because of their x's and o's and all the preparation and a lot of the shit that the assistant coaches and video coaches do by the way um they got to motivate these guys and like one underrated thing in the middle of the morgan riley uh ridley greg thing and i know i'm skipping ahead no no no one is going to want to hear this this is going to give off big uncle energy i don't care it matters it has always mattered and it's something that has been a consistent weakness of this team matthew skating in but slow like after the puck or after to the bench willie skating in marner skating in doesn't have a partner looks around i don't think anybody your ass kick guys just get your ass i don't think that's boomer energy i think anybody
Starting point is 00:27:22 who watches the game expects players to skate hard tarasenko like tarasenko punched matthews in the face did he you looked at yeah he did he did after after the ride i didn't notice because we're so used to seeing it after the riley incident yep oh i didn't punch him right in the face and matthews looks down at tarasenko um it's taller longer reach more weight i like yeah i know your wrists i don't know slap them or something like do like let it let them know you're there um these guys I don't know this is this is why every time someone brings up Sheldon Keefe and firing him I go yay and I and I brush it off I you can't make these guys change their spots
Starting point is 00:28:15 who is going to come in and make these guys interested in sticking up for themselves let alone their teammates right and why do these things keep happening why do these things keep happening why does Nazem Kadri get antagonized antagonized antagonized loses mind gets suspended why does Michael Bunting get antagonized antagonized antagonized loses mind gets suspended and never get a call again and never get a call again why does Morgan Riley get antagonized antagonized antagonized loses mind gets suspended because it's always one fucking person and yes this year it's a little different it's not one person but for the most part kitty cat like just real soft timid there there was a narrative out there that no one wanted to
Starting point is 00:29:06 hear um that uh you know what riley you know he he did the right thing saying you can't freaking do that and he stuck up for the team and people were saying well this actually makes the leafs look more soft and a lot of people were not computing what that meant what does that mean well it's one guy going squirrely again while the rest of this team well the guy like when i say the rest of this team like max domey like that that's the sort a guy who might win like best supporting actor and then go off and do another project like let's talk about the guys who are sticking around you know what i mean the guy's not on one year deals you who's sticking around on this team the core who's locked up forever dudes on entry level and
Starting point is 00:30:01 that's it tyler bertuzzi like i'm just i cannot bring myself to get worked up about the things he does or doesn't do um he's not gonna be here he's not gonna be here um max tomey he's not gonna be here man he's not gonna be here that's some guy it's the core and every good core in this league sticks up for themselves to at least some degree and these guys can't bring themselves to do it and it doesn't help steve that they were taught not to i know formative years babcock and dubas and lamborello and all those guys said don't do it don't get involved we'll get him back on the power play and and it's the same recipe we've seen for years okay no calls all night no calls no calls no calls getting chippy no calls getting chippy no calls no calls getting chippy explosion
Starting point is 00:30:57 am I talking about game two 2019 against the Bruins or am I talking about this game against the Sens this happens all the time this happens not all the time obviously there's 82 games that's so many games it happens in the games that matter they matter and this is what I was getting at in the lfr this game mattered and like leaf fans we we got to be honest with ourselves if a leaf did what ridley grigg did we would acknowledge one thing lol shouldn't have done that also lol that was awesome oh yeah you know what i saw and there's just no answer to this the comparisons to the jose bautista bat flip where rune at our door punched him in the face the next year well that was the next year and like i know you can't someone flips their bat you can't run up the
Starting point is 00:31:54 bases and go punch him in the face i know they're two different sports but like you can't think i mean you can i mean you can we've seen it pretty rare but we've seen it but like you know and and like there are certain moments like hitting a three late in a blowout game and basketball and there are things you can do that are deemed disrespectful hockey's the only one where you can count on someone trying to kick your ass after yeah right so i i guess i guess what i want sends fans to do what i want them to be more reasonable on is this reaction didn't fall out of the sky oh yeah they're acting like ridley grigg who is a what do you mean like innocent sweet pure little ridley grigg who is by the way embraced his heel roll perfectly oh great great
Starting point is 00:32:44 doing it right like i love i love that and if he was a leaf i would love that guy and i would love that kind of chicken shit stuff because it works of course i would but don't let don't don't where does that come don't condescend to me we know what type of player those are just those just fans defending their team like i don't i don't and that's fine yeah that's why i'm like you can't fault them no it's not just fans though there are there are media members today yeah media Media members who are fans of the Ottawa Senators. Sorry? Media members who are fans of the Ottawa Senators.
Starting point is 00:33:14 Yeah, okay. Oh, no. No, they're all in Portland. Hey, fans. Media are not fans. Whoa, Jesse. And by the way, Greg is on the ice today, and he's perfectly fine. Oh, good.
Starting point is 00:33:25 I thought he had died. So Morgan Riley will get a few less games for that. Ridley Gregg, by the way, listener of the SDP. Is he? yeah he pretended he died oh yeah this that's the advice i've been given it's and you know what it works totally fucking right it works um like you gotta stick to the face he gotta he's allowed he's allowed to fall down to the ground and stay there like he's dead like i listen let me say the thing that all sense fans want to hear a leaf fan say riley shouldn't have done that he should have
Starting point is 00:34:00 done something anyone who's ever watched the sport since it's been around from like the red dead redemption 1800 times knew something was coming is it hilarious that he did that yes objectively that's hilarious and awesome that he did that as a leaf fan that made it the fact that it's hilarious and awesome is why we're mad that's why we're mad that's how that works it's weird how you got to explain everything from the beginning yeah the fact that it was hilarious and awesome is why we're mad but it's hockey and morgan riley's reaction did not fall out of the sky that has always been what's coming also imagine the stories imagine how much more shit this team would be taking today
Starting point is 00:34:58 had they done nothing oh right oh my god well it would be boston again from earlier in the season yeah and they would have learned nothing let me i think i think it's interesting that you started this by saying in the lfr you kind of focused on the wrong thing and then we spent like 14 minutes talking about like everything surrounding the leafs and how we got to that moment and not the the moment itself because i think there's there's a lot of backstory to it there is sorry i choked all right so there's like the leafs and tough yeah there's a way whoa uh we've been doing a show together for way too long but you go to you go to the incident itself and on its surface
Starting point is 00:35:36 its surface it makes sense for both guys you know both guys were were doing wrong things like morgan riley is fine if he just cross checks him a little lower if it's not a cross check to the head it's probably this a whole other punches him or punches him because that's fine apparently is not even frowned upon in hockey right if you if you punch him in a way that's okay then it's okay as long as you don't use the stick infraction really greg as you guys outlined is hilarious for doing that and all power to him for for showing up the leafs in the final seconds but there's gonna be a reaction to that and that makes sense the reaction was just a poor reaction i think both guys did their job both guys are right and wrong yeah i yes yes um but they were right by their team
Starting point is 00:36:20 and their fan base yes right yeah so ridley grit like leaf fans left the building that night furious good job well done it's been do you know how many years it's been since a sends player properly did that like chris neal days yeah like oh you're forgetting about blowing the five one nah man like that's just regular old blowing a hockey game where i get old leaves blowing a hockey game too that's that's not anything special about the senders i'm gonna get chewed out i've been chewed out before yeah no they're just blowing a lead i've seen them blow a lead before like i'm talking proper battle of ontario days this was proper battle of ontario heat and if riley doesn't cross check him in the mouth uh we're not talking about the suspension or or
Starting point is 00:37:16 any of that um right talking about them losing the game like yeah you're talking about we're talking if if the whole incident doesn't come away with something that's going to lead to a suspension we're just talking about the least losing and like ah can this team make the playoffs you know tampa and detroit are right there and all this kind of stuff you know that's what we're talking about today yep i also think tovaris is at very least hugging someone for fuck's sake yeah you you're a little bit exaggerating what them getting like punked post uh not post post scrum because tovaris is the one who grabs the guy here i can't show it fully but if we go here tovaris comes in and grabs uh his guy who was going to i don't know to the player and then matthews and
Starting point is 00:38:01 tarasenko tie up because matthews is the second guy into tavarez's guy and tarasenko's like no matthews i'm gonna grab you yeah but then he punches him in the face no he grabs him by the shoulders no you're not watching it close enough jesse you punch look at that no he he has him by the collar and he shoves him whatever it's a rabbit punch so and then they and then they grab and they tussle so it's it's not you can't describe it as the dude got punched to the face because on audio that sounds a lot more extreme than what it actually is visually who says you had to punch second fucking i'm just i'm just trying to be fair like no well here's me trying to be fair uh get a load of the temperature on the ice get a load of the temperature in the
Starting point is 00:38:45 building do something do something like i don't know i want to read this to the one the one you described accurately as mitch marner glided into the whole action that's not there's nothing what's going on there's nothing untrue about that like i mean dude he's such an incredible player and he's had such an incredible run recently but this is a that's a big part of the reason why a lot of this fan fan base sees him score like 100 points a year and they just go fart they don't care look of that that's you wear 16 you wear 16 everybody else well to be fair who was he gonna grab there was nobody else to grab the other guy to grab was on the ground well okay you know what the panthers never do go they never go they never go man to man there's never anybody standing around
Starting point is 00:39:37 the odds are stacked against them i'm just gonna sit this one out yeah no what what murder should do is grab tarasenko from behind and just put him in a headlock yes yeah he has his mouth guard sticking out of his mouth his expressionless psychopath face and he just starts wailing on the smallest most vulnerable person on the ice that and and they're punished they're punished though their punishment every year is they're forced to play hockey longer than the maple leaves don't forget george peros was a panther and i don't care how bad he was with the panthers and how short he was there he was still a panther adam that started as a bit um this hearing i don't care has he was a panther and he was a canadian it started it started as a bit um uh george peros
Starting point is 00:40:22 absolutely has it out for the leafs absolutely so that's the one conspiracy theory i'll subscribe to the one pants shitting thing i'll have as a big baby leaf fan george peros is absolutely the one i leave you you what the one the one yes the one only one singular singular where are you going i want to read this tweet because what was interesting about the situation is obviously the reaction to it obviously you expect leaf fans to react the way fans do sense fans to react the way sense fans do but i just i saw certain members of the media who are diametrically opposed come together in some odd assortment of allyship they hate the leafs uh no no actually no no uh everybody who um who had any anything to say like like i i look at scott wheeler i knew he grew up i know
Starting point is 00:41:14 he grew up in the area but he's not like a leafs fan i don't think he's uh he's just a guy who does the things like he does the the prospect things but scott wheeler doesn't like rah rah rah go for the leafs he was like yeah well that's ridley greg and he just got you to take the bait yeah uh and and mark specter and i don't think mark and scott agree all the time but one of the things that that mark specter said was he said um i'm agnostic about this and i could care less about riley suspension he's like whatever but when i hear uh him referred to as the quote unsuspecting ridley grigg we enter a fantasy world and oh a hundred yeah and he said he said he is not unsuspecting after that clapper and and then you have uh you have people on both sides it didn't fall out of
Starting point is 00:41:58 the sky all right and this is my point this is my point it's it's listen if you're a sense fan like somebody somebody responded to him it's like if i cut so if i cut someone off at the grocery store it's not the grocery store oh shut up it's not this is a hockey game this is what happens and and frankly ridley grigg knew two things and he's really smart to do this by the I'm complimenting him. A, the Leafs do nothing, and they look chicken shit. B, they overreact, and they get a suspension. And, LOL, I don't have to play them again.
Starting point is 00:42:30 So I don't have to answer the bell. This is our last game against them. That's such a good point. Ridley Grigg doesn't have to do shit. No, next year, there's still something. The Leafs will get them next year. No, no, no. But, like, next game, 100%, they got it.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Like, we're going to be looking forward to that. It's going to be a Wednesday night. It's going to be awesome. Now, we're going to be looking forward to that. Who's going to be there? morgan riley morgan riley all right ridley greg their best defenseman can get suspended again sounds good no no on the leafs morgan riley's gonna be there john tavaris is gonna be there not gonna do shit ryan reeves will be there he's locked up for 80 years yeah yeah i want to talk
Starting point is 00:43:06 about that by the way can't wait for that yeah fucking wheel him around the ice like a civil war cannon uh matthews is gonna be there he's not gonna do shit willie lander's gonna be there he's not gonna do shit marner's gonna be there he's not gonna do shit oh but max don't Oh, he'll probably be somewhere else. Well, Tyler... Oh, he'll probably be somewhere else. Well, maybe Noah... Well, he'll probably be somewhere else.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Jake McCabe might be there. Okay, so you don't think they're going to do anything? No. I think they'll be. I think they will. I think there'll be some sort of fight. But again, if you're Ridley Grigg, you don't care. Yeah, and it's not the drama that would happen
Starting point is 00:43:43 if next Saturday Leafs and Sens play. That will be explosions, but it'll be a tussle. even if they pay him back they gotta wait like something like nine months yeah that's it and that's so so let me let me say this um what one of the things that i think goes completely untalked about is keith does the right thing in hockey terms uh and he sends out ryan reeves for the last five seconds and what does that do ryan didn't even grab anybody the refs wouldn't allow it he could have grabbed the guy just grab him now the refs were grabbing ryan reeves before i I think if Ryan Reese tried to fight somebody, it would have been a little bit of a dangerous issue.
Starting point is 00:44:23 I'm not asking him to fight. I'm asking him to go, duh, and then leave the ice. That's what I'm asking for. Oh, man. Shake him. Just shake him up. Good thing the Sens pants are black, because I'm sure they would have all shit themselves out of fear that he would have gone. This is why it needs to be an entire team effort for the physicality thing.
Starting point is 00:44:46 Yeah, well, good because because people were tweeting sarcastically, but also very truthfully that, well, this this wouldn't happen to the Leafs if Ryan Reeves were on the team. And it does. And it's because of what Steve outlined. Now, when it comes to when it comes to Morgan Rielly suspension, like Bruce Garriott is just now he's just in his element right now tweeting about Ridley Gregg. Like, his tweet 20 minutes ago, Ridley Gregg returns to the ice after vicious, vicious cross-check from Morgan Rielly. Like, Bruce, chill, okay? Morgan Rielly's going to get suspended. He deserves to get suspended. Morgan Rielly is, like, for all the Senators players, like, he's the dirtiest guy.
Starting point is 00:45:27 Like, the guy has no priors. He was up for the Lady Bing up until this incident. Yeah, so, yeah, no, he's not. He'll get too many games. That's the way it's going to go. Apparently, he is going to the hearing, which I respect. don't take the zoom get in front of betman's face uh i cannot wait to listen to today's cj show that's all i'm gonna say you should probably say a little more no i'm kidding uh on what uh the
Starting point is 00:45:53 well okay i'm privy to the group chat and both teams are even more upset about this than they let on great put it that way good i cannot wait good and maybe maybe this is and this is a bigger picture thing. I think Toronto fans want a team that can stick up for itself. When I talk to people that love this team, they do say, man, they really could use a Darcy Tucker. They really could use a Gary Roberts. They really could use people that are very talented but can stand up for themselves. Cool. Ditch the core. Well, some of, I think, does have to change. I think mostly fans have come come around to that i don't think mostly fans are like no this core is going to get it done because they haven't and so you know when you see games like this what bothers me as a fan
Starting point is 00:46:43 is that again we're in this position and this goes back to what you said in the video because the leafs played sloppy because they played uninspired because they weren't focused to start the game and that and and and towards the end of the first period and that part that's the part that eats at me that's the part where i'm like this team yeah okay they're not the 28th team maybe they're the 22nd best team based on talent but this is a team that literally the senators played themselves out of the head coach that they loved because they were so bad like one of they love dj smith so much that they played like shit for him probably and i can't locker room in the league i can't i and it and again it's the this season stop letting them into this i know stop on
Starting point is 00:47:30 them yeah but this this is why i brought it uh i talked about the game in the lfr this game meant something to them and it didn't mean something to the leafs it this game meant something to fans oh absolutely it meant something to the sins it meant something to leafs fans you can't make them care i don't care who's behind the bench you can't make them care Sean McIndoe, down goes Brown, had a really good tweet. And he said, he basically was like, the incident aside, it's nice to see this team that is so regularly pulseless with a pulse. And this is a problem that I think Leaf fans can identify with.
Starting point is 00:48:10 This is the thing that drives people crazy. It's, you know, Morgan Rielly throwing the cross joke or whatever. Every time we see heart and soul from the Leafs, it's in the last minute. And I think that part is what grinds people game after game, week after week, year after year. we have a team here that is immensely talented just brilliant talent on this team but there is many many games that you can see and leaf fans you know what i'm talking about throughout the year where they're just ah if i gave it if i gave it 90 tonight it's gonna be fine
Starting point is 00:48:44 we'll probably get a win because there's so many games and this is this is the stuff that drives me crazy because then you end up with morgan riley suspended i'll go go through the the lines for you in practice you ready oh today yeah brody lilligren fuck my life benoit mccabe giordano legacy and and so here's what here's what ottawa just did and this is going to be their parting gift to us this season physical pain they took our really our our best and really only puck moving defenseman out of the lineup for a week and a half like they're just laughing This is a completely irrelevant team this year. And Sens fans, you have to agree.
Starting point is 00:49:24 You've played like shit. And just got their greatest rival, the guys that come in and invade their arena and disrespect them. And now their parting gift is the only guy on the ice on defense who can really truly move the puck on the Leafs defense is suspended. Like that is...
Starting point is 00:49:45 It might cost them a playoff spot. The Leafs? Nah, it won't cost them a playoff spot. It might. Dude, how many games do you think they're going to win with that bullshit? Look at that bullshit. That's three third pairs. And that goes back to a bigger issue, which Jesse brought up last week, which is when you have a really bad summer and things like this pop up and your GM and GM staff and president
Starting point is 00:50:09 and I'm going to put the president with an exclamation point and an underline several times when they swing and miss on that many players all at once you end up with defense lines that look like this i absolutely categorically cannot believe what a hockey hall of fame player like brendan shanahan who was part of the blood feud red wings and that whole thing against the avalanche i absolutely cannot believe what a guy who was involved in that detroit red wings team has done to the Toronto Maple Leafs I cannot believe it what what a what an absolute paper tiger he's made this team into I absolutely cannot believe what he's done the like some of the most skilled people this team has ever employed and it's the softest most unthreatening
Starting point is 00:51:02 most inconsequential team imaginable for the skill on it a guy who was on teams that ripped each other apart had line brawls uh and it brought the team together they won cups because of it they don't they don't go after claude lemieux they don't win those back-to-back cups that's that's the long and short of it they they don't go after claude lemieux in the regular season they don't win those back-to-back cups and a guy who was involved in that team assembled this completely forgettable nonsense i can't believe it i really can't i really leafs got the blues flyers ducks blues coyotes uh and then golden knights so that's six games if riley gets six games well the listen the blues are not going to be an easy out the flyers are for sure not going
Starting point is 00:51:53 to be an easy you know the ducks for whatever reason the leafs always play down to the ducks level all three of those games are at home which is helpful except the leafs stink at home but the leafs all season long have been a terrible home team well i i would count on riley riley's not in new york for nothing he's gonna get six or more um which is the wrong decision it is like you look at uh manji apani cross-checking a guy who is on the ground and in the head you know got one game what so riley is being so by by suspension length what david perron did this season was the worst thing anyone's did yes yeah six games what riley did to ridley greg was bad it was bad he should be suspended yes it wasn't the worst thing that's been done this month
Starting point is 00:52:40 no what the fuck no even even by accident the truba trent frederick swing stick to the face is the worst thing that's happened in the league. Never for as long as I live will I understand that. Oh, but he didn't mean to. Schubert got a fine for that. But he didn't mean to. It wasn't even suspended. Fines don't count.
Starting point is 00:52:56 But he didn't mean to, Steve. So that's what they're taking. I didn't know they took that into account. But in their explanation videos, they'll say, we understood the argument from X player that they did not intend this action. So the intention of the player is definitely taken into account there. it's just six is too much for the action like we go back to matthew's doline very similar situation
Starting point is 00:53:21 cross check to the head where it's directly to the head and it's not a ride up from the shoulder pads and that was too gay yeah they never seem to understand the leafs explanation hey you ever noticed that well like the fact that riley has no priors we already know doesn't matter because spence is six yeah and to the point accepted it they didn't they didn't fight it no they did fight it and betman uh reduced it oh he did i it might be the only i'm trying to think how many suspensions betman has reduced under peros i think didn't tom wilson get like 21 or something and they reduced it to 14 or something like that i seem to remember they reduced i think only those two mm-hmm now uh speaking of uh reduced and having things rescinded i do think and i didn't mention
Starting point is 00:54:15 this in the lfr because it was going to fall on deaf ears if i mentioned it the night of people are too heated yes but now i can talk about it with a clear head i've had time to think about it and it's simply correct so here come the words um a lot of this is on eric furlap who is one of the officials in this game and i can tell you exactly what happened because these guys have really easily damageable egos the leafs played the dallas stars eric furlatt was one of the officials the leaf scored three power play goals but what happened after those three power play goals is mason marchman caught jake mccabe with a blind side hit mccabe was bleeding all over the place and the Leafs were whining and yelling and complaining he has two black eyes by the way yeah
Starting point is 00:55:04 yeah because he got he probably broke his nose clocked clocked and after that he had to explain to Sheldon Keefe we haven't even talked about Sheldon Keefe uh and how he said it was appropriate but which is the right thing to say after that we'll get there after that um Furlac goes to Leafs bench and they're like hey what the hell and he well the officiating crew wasn't necessarily for a lot said it was a good hit well after the game the leafs obviously go to the league and they go what what the hell the league goes no no you're right and they fine mason marchman now it's a fine fines do not count they're not things that are things they are that's a dinner for these guys
Starting point is 00:55:56 You ever see the Bruins bar tab from when they won the cup? We've talked about this. It was over $100,000. I know they won the cup, but that's five grand's a dinner. It's a dinner. It's nothing. But what it is, is an acknowledgement that... Player erred.
Starting point is 00:56:13 Yes. Player erred. Official erred. The referees made a mistake not calling a penalty. Okay. And so if you're there and you're on that officiating crew, you were embarrassed. and you're sitting there
Starting point is 00:56:28 for the next couple days and you're going you assholes got three power play goals and you have the audacity to whine and complain about this alright
Starting point is 00:56:39 alright I got something for you and isn't it funny isn't it odd isn't it just such a coincidence that the next game against the Sens the Leafs get Eric Furlatt again
Starting point is 00:56:51 not a single penalty called against them not a single penalty called in their favor isn't it funny it worked that is i have to be honest that is very strange isn't it odd that it worked out that way as i faint onto my fainting chair i just think it's funny how i don't think you think it's funny i uh well cj's already recorded um today but like if we were back on stage at the rec room we had a live show i'd be like the league's sick of these guys aren't they look i got the impression especially during the covid bubble and a little after that the dubious shanahan leafs exhausted the league i think they wore out their welcome
Starting point is 00:57:48 i think every time their name showed up in their email inbox they were like it's these fucking guys again always whining and complaining and they they want stiffer penalties stiffer penalties stiffer penalties and then a leaf does something and they're like all right you're gonna get exactly what you asked for guess what morgan riley second player this season to get an in-person hearing i'm sorry like i know i'm a leaf fan i'm very open about my biases look at all the bullshit that's happened this season this is either the worst or second worst infraction of the season get the fuck out of my face what are we doing here who are we even trying to fool who are we trying to kid this looks very fishy from the officiating crew that's all i'm saying
Starting point is 00:58:42 officiating office i mean we know they missed at least one sometimes there's games where there have been games this season where the leafs only got like one yeah or whatever one power play but not one but not one and i've been like ah you know it wasn't that chippy of a game it's fine we saw mccabe take a stick to the face how much more abuse does this guy's face need to take before anyone gives some modicum of a shit yep yep so uh i just think it's funny how it wouldn't be the first time habs fans who are listening to this going on leaf fan whining complainant remember alex burrows he'll tell you something about this he was he's behind your bench right now he dove or embellished or something and it was i don't remember the name of the official but
Starting point is 00:59:34 as burrows told the story the official came up to him before the next game and said you made a fool out of me and all night it was everybody hates alex and his opponent beat the dog shit out of him all night long and the whistle was nowhere to be found and every time he did anything oh look what i found i think he took three minors that night these guys have fragile egos and i think that played into it interesting now what did you want to say about keith and jesse actually let me start jesse you did you think that keith's response saying that morgan riley morgan riley's response was appropriate do you find that appropriate yeah i feel like that's what he has to say like he can't i also think he believes it yeah also yeah i believe he genuinely
Starting point is 01:00:24 believes that because a head coach isn't not gonna stick up for his player that is sticking up for his team imagine he said that like that was too far yeah that would be a ridiculous quote and at that point Sheldon Keefe shouldn't be the head coach of any National Hockey League team if he's doing that publicly like the that was the only thing he could say in that moment the only thing I wish he had done is gone harder uh to be honest um like I wish he said it like with his chest you know what i mean i think that would have earned him some points with the fans would earn him some points with the team because he said oh i thought it was appropriate and that was all he said to me it was like all right you made your feelings known and this is not gonna look well
Starting point is 01:01:14 in the in-person hearing you know what i mean it's like you know in court and he didn't even show remorse right i don't think that has any factor on the case i hope shouldn't i hope not What Sheldon Keefe says and does shouldn't impact the decision making of the Department of Player Safety. Well, something we've talked about on the show many times is all the rules are intentionally vague so that they can just make whatever the fuck they want up. So I think it is a potential factor. You're probably right. Yeah, no, it'd be ridiculous if a coach after the fact saying that he approves of something has any impact on a suspension like that. Let me tell you something about the NHL.
Starting point is 01:01:54 but yeah well okay um you've you've alluded to it a couple of times you didn't think sheldon keefe's performance in this game was very good well it's the same shit isn't it like it's the same mistakes over and over and over again and you know okay it's the personnel well when they had better personnel they weren't getting it done either um and it's easier to fire the coach but the leafs have already said they don't want to i okay let's talk about this mlse where did this come from where's this desire to we don't want to pay a coach to not coach for us i think i think plans can change if your hand is forced yeah i feel like they say that but if push comes to shove and they have to fire sheldon they will
Starting point is 01:02:48 eat the money right but like it was just that they they got pissed off because they were paying babs for like four more years at five million bucks like 20 million don't make that be the be-all and end-all yeah it's impossible for him to get fired yeah like that's not the case but i want to know where this attitude came from because i i think i know more about mlsc's financials than they do actually because uh even when they had babcock and when they were paying babcock to not coach them spending money was embedded into their hockey strategy not business strategy hockey strategy in a way that a lot of people forgot about um andreas johnson was paid to not play for this team well what do you mean they front loaded his contract to make it easier to
Starting point is 01:03:42 trade at the end so they front loaded it paid them money and then once they had basically paid all the money out of town you go Kasperi Kapanen they front loaded the contract paid them all the money out you go and they did this with a bunch of players actually a big part of why John Tavares is currently in courts is because they front loaded the dog shit out of his contract signing bonuses and all that these guys pay people to no longer be a part of their organization all the time and have historically and continue to do so so i don't know why they're blinking now i i don't think they're blinking now i think that they everyone has told us they're blinking no i think what they've they've said is they didn't want a situation like babs that did change some things
Starting point is 01:04:33 and i get it like from a corporate governance standpoint you can't argue that you're doing your fiduciary duty by saying yes we signed a contract and we fired a guy four years early uh and and paid him 20 million dollars not to work for us and then go to the shareholders and go isn't that great yeah like that that is that that like there is a an implication there right so i get that so so i'm not saying remember you gotta remember sheldon doesn't make what babcock makes he probably made half uh he's probably two and a half three million bucks um that what where they aired on my part this summer they wanted to keep Sheldon and instead of signing up for a year they signed up for two yeah and who well Brad Brad and Brad and Brandon and I think that is
Starting point is 01:05:18 that's the problem I have with it is it's like okay it doesn't matter whether Sheldon Keefe is a good coach which is what Brad said at the at the press conference I don't want to get rid of him I think he's a good coach well that's totally good but at a certain point it does come to a stage where you do look at it and go but is it working here over the last 11 years they've been soft as baby shit over the last 11 years they've paid coaches to not coach for them over the last 11 years they've paid players not to play for them over the last 11 years they've won one playoff series there is only one person in the organization who has been here for 11 years it's the president who this team, at the ownership level, endorsed with their entire souls this past spring.
Starting point is 01:06:13 So whenever I sound downtrodden and concerned about the future of this team, I'm watching them go in the wrong direction at Mach 10. i'm watching them go in the wrong direction with no reason to believe that they will change course actually i think you're where i disagree with you okay is that you're you're forgetting and it's easy to forget that mlse has a new president coming in in april and yeah what's his resume his yes his resume is rogers and bell obviously they own the team but keith pelly understands that the country's held just let me no hold on the country you gotta let me finish the point here sure you gotta stop for sure and the reason i say that is keith pelly uh for whatever his track record is
Starting point is 01:07:08 was extraordinarily successful with tsn did get the rogers deal done with hockey what rogers has done with that deal since is completely up to everybody's interpretation but that that is what his resume is then he goes to the european golf tour he's come back he has the ear of both sides of ownership which is rare because rogers and bell don't like each other and well at least they say they don't good way to operate and and i think that he's going to look at this and go the only thing that is going to drive share prices for uh rogers and for bell is for the toronto maple leafs and the toronto rafters to be very good and if if if they are not succeeding like when we were i don't know if you guys remember much about the 15 16 runs for the blue jays but rogers stock
Starting point is 01:07:50 not blue jay stock rogers stock went up like 20 25 it was crazy i believe it so if the leafs went on a real run these companies wouldn't just make the money from ticket revenue they don't give a shit about that their their actual asset value is going to skyrocket and be the first zillionaires in human history brendan shanahan is a uh from what i understand uh a very very good executive and that takes a particular type of person anybody that's ever worked in a corporate office knows what we're talking about here, but so is Keith Pelley. And I think Keith Pelley is going to look at this and go, if the Leafs don't take a step forward in the postseason this year,
Starting point is 01:08:30 if they don't get into the second round and drive it to the seventh game, he's going to start looking at this team and go, okay, well, you're worse than the regular season. Then you took a step back in the playoffs, and you really haven't done anything in the playoffs anyway. At a certain point, Shannon, we got to have a conversation here. And so I think for the first time, because the last guy, Freezy, David Freasdale, was not like a sports guy. Freezy.
Starting point is 01:08:56 Yeah, that's what the internally they call him, Freezy. I was like, who are you? He's a good person and a good executive, but he's a business guy. He came from like airplanes. Keith Pell, he's a sports guy. He started as a producer at TSN on CFL. This guy understands the business, understands sports. and I think that that Brendan Shanahan and there have been reports about this already there's
Starting point is 01:09:22 already been allusions to this that things things are shifting in MLSC now he might be able to shift with them but they better get this on track quick and so and Jota Siegel interestingly and this is how it relates back to hockey he put out an article which I really liked last week saying here's why the Leafs can't sit on their hands at the trade deadline and I agree with them they cannot sit they cannot sit with this they even and it's not even a traditional buyer like 100 you if you're brandon shanahan you can't allow them to oh 100 well they can't go on like this dubas emptied the clip because he was he knew he was gone it well he knew it was either his last hurrah and he knew he was gone which is weird because he never spoke to the penguins beforehand
Starting point is 01:10:02 or um you know what yeah they just threw 50 million bucks at him one day yeah just one day and he was uh or it was he's you know what i'm fighting for my job brenda shanahan's got to fight for his job here i like that he's got to fight for his job because right now there's no reason he should keep it well and and i think what he did last year with dubas was he said no because dubas made a power play he said i want to cut shanney out of the organizational structure and I want to go directly to the board with any trade and any signing and Shani said no I'm not going to sign off on that because I'd be signing my own resignation we what
Starting point is 01:10:43 would be the point in having me we hammered Shanahan and we should have but Dubas deserves a lot more blame than people realize sure well and I don't blame Dubas for wanting to go above Shanahan or around Shanahan or whatever like oh I saw the dollar amount it's cool you do you I forgive you but but uh i think where we what shanny did especially when he had like that hour-long press conference a couple days after firing dubas he said i was driving home on the whatever on the gardener the dvp or wherever he was and i just felt like that wasn't what i wanted you know i want a guy who was who was committed and to me at the time and to me now especially it says i that's shanny going i want to do it my way and we've seen eight months of shanny doing
Starting point is 01:11:29 it his way and already you're seeing the cracks already you're seeing things not work out and you're seeing true living at how many savers games in a row uh and was he even there on saturday i don't think he was there i so badly wish he was there to see a building full of leaf fans on the road leave humiliated it's what he deserves as the guy who's trying to fix this team it's what like you deserve to be there for every victory and you deserve to feel all every prickle of every defeat so i i tell you what there better be someone real tantalizing you're watching on the sabers or the blues or the canucks because those are the three teams that he's seen there um because you should have been there for that game yeah anyway we've exhausted it uh it looks
Starting point is 01:12:21 like jake mccabe is taking pp1 rushes how do we feel about that jesse are you down i would probably put lilligran in that spot i would too uh i think lilligran matthews barnard tavarez austin now when he said the remember the peewee thing last week where what i don't think you can put lilligran remember because he was there was a breakaway behind him on the power play when the guy got out of the box oh yeah so i think that's why he can't be there because the coach is saying you didn't earn that this is keith backing up his own words he's punishing a player who failed right all right maybe you try i don't know i would have tried maybe five forwards it would have been fun like there's an excuse to do an experiment well and like mccabe is banged up
Starting point is 01:13:10 so like yeah i don't think i don't i don't know if jake mccabe makes the most sense and like we're saying all that and then what's going to happen is they're going to score a whole bunch of power play goals and they're gonna go six and oh god i fucking dude wouldn't that be amazing no um guys brad marchand uh never sticks up for himself because he's the team star a thousand games you guys are dyed in the wool leaf fans say something nice about brad marchand uh he is someone who has been around forever and he gets more effective with every passing season and i wish he would stop the nicest thing i could say about brad marchand as a leaf fan is i cannot wait until like you think the bruins are gonna roll out the red carpet for his retirement ceremony the leaf
Starting point is 01:14:01 should be invited they should be invited because they'll celebrate harder than anyone else in this league hurrah please go but i don't think he's going anytime soon i think he's got at least 300 hundred more games left in him jesse blake i think brad marchand is one of the most underrated captains in the national hockey league because he never got to be a captain for most of his career because he was learning under patrice bergeron and now that he gets to be captain you really see what kind of a leader he is and he's been he's been groomed under patrice bergeron for so many years that he can just and chara that now he's he's he's 35 gets a chance to be the captain and you see what the Bruins are and he's the voice now in Boston and it's it's unbelievable to see
Starting point is 01:14:47 the run he's had for a thousand games is the game tonight or tomorrow I believe it is yeah I believe it's tonight yeah it's just that's the that's a dude who deserves I don't know if it's a statue but tomorrow versus Tampa it's tomorrow against Tampa Tampa that's a great opponent yeah um I don't know if he deserves a statue but he deserves his jersey at the rafters oh yeah oh yeah I don't think anyone's gonna wear 63 again so maybe you know it's all gonna worry about that the thing about brad marchand that always blows me away is that people forget when he came into the league no one was paying attention to him he's the second round pick yeah like he was i don't know here's kid he's kind of a rat like when he i remember and you could probably find the podcast where we
Starting point is 01:15:28 talked about this at the world cup in 2016 he was put on a line with bergeron and crosby and it was weird people don't remember that it's 2024 now but it was weird because it was Crosby and Bergeron and like second line ish Bruin Bruin like he was not that right in 2016 you look at Crosby Bergeron Marchand and you're like all right one of these things is not like the other but he had like trained with them in the summer and we're like uh okay and then he was crazy for canada he was really good and i want to say it was around then he he was always a good player but around then he went from this pretty good offensive contributor to a dude who could flirt with 100 points every year yeah right he's a guy who won third round pick oh third round third round pick and we have
Starting point is 01:16:29 so much reverence for brad marchand and i think it speaks to his leadership is what i was saying before because he's he's had one 100 point season in his entire career one he's had 040 goal seasons and we still speak about brad marchand in this way because of who he is on the ice and the tenacity he plays hockey with and he he's the traditional hockey player you know with the the effort level that he displays night in night out one of those rare players that if you took all 32 gms and they said and said do you want brad marchand on your team all of them would say yes oh my god like you know it's there's very few players that you can say that about every single one of them would say yes even now at 35 and uh what i love i love looking at his stats too because you're right
Starting point is 01:17:11 right around the olympics is when he kind of broke out his highest point total in his first five seasons was 55 yeah this is what i'm saying it it didn't make any sense we're like oh okay i guess he can go i mean it's a deep bruins team yeah but like ah you can go in there and dig for pucks i guess and then yeah we were talking about him like who was Crosby's um uh guy at the 20 oh um Chris Kunitz Chris Kunitz yeah we're talking about him like he was Chris Kunitz and no disrespect to Chris Kunitz but like Brad Marchand now this one's gonna melt brains he's tied for 121st all-time in NHL scoring oh wow with 910 points he's tied with Gary Roberts so he's about to pass him the next guy with 915 is Bobby Orr then he's gonna pass Pavel Datsuk
Starting point is 01:18:05 Brad Mershan's gonna pass Pavel Datsuk Brad Mershan didn't have a 80 point season until eight years into his career dude I'm telling you like he's he's aged like a fine wine and considering like he's a winger too yeah and like oh I know like he's such a great player and he's amazing and he doesn't even play like a center you know it's incredible uh he's not going to catch connor mcdavid but like this season he's going to pass neil broughton brad richards steve thomas jason are not blake wheeler still playing like he's going to end up pretty comfortably in the top 100 all time just consistency year in year out doing it for long enough he's going to end up in the in the top 100 offensive performers of all time and that's not even his calling card
Starting point is 01:18:50 that's a good player man yeah yeah that's a spectacular player should we do the press conference or is there anything else you guys want to hit well sure let's hit the press conference two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life saving research. Starting point is 01:20:27 from the peoples adam wilde as the man who puts the show outlined together why with all of the hate that you have in your heart for the tampa bay lightning yeah could you not have said something nice about Mikhail Sergachev and his note after his injury. You know what? I had it on the list of show prep, and we just didn't get to it. We were talking about other stuff. Because you hate Tampa. Yeah, it's personal,
Starting point is 01:20:52 especially Sergachev. I was actually at that game laughing. I was in it, and I had my... It's funny, I had my eyebrows shaved in a particular way, so they just went down like this, because I look consistently evil. Actually, there was... When they brought the stretcher onto the ice, Adam
Starting point is 01:21:08 was trying to get in the way oh yeah no i i actually um i uh siphoned the gas out of the uh ambulance while he was in there um no i honestly came up with that too easily there was a reason yeah i feel like you actually did listen when you're a billionaire you also have to be evil that's fair so i i actually uh there was people that messaged that about that and i uh i said that's sort of the reason why we are doing the vip thing because like there are things that every show i get to and all right i i line it up and we just don't get to i had no idea that we had forgotten because i had uh tweeted about it yeah but also adam's are you getting your tweets confused with conversation oh yeah sometimes how are those two things equal
Starting point is 01:21:49 adam's also really good at and i'm not saying this happened here um uh i'll be like adam we need to mention this and adam goes okay what's there and i go well that it's bad and adam goes that's not a topic yes like because i think circuit circuit chef doesn't know he wasn't falling in that this is a topic but like again there's not much to be said other than that really sucks and you feel awful like dude that's terrible and like dude it takes a lot like i was raised by the internet it takes a lot to make me like physically react to a video that and I you knew right away and like people were clowning is his Instagram or whatever but I was like I that's a guy being real like I respect that and I love real and on drugs yeah well and
Starting point is 01:22:40 I love Sergeyev's quotes anyway like oh I love he's a good interview man that guy that guy tells you how he feels I love that of course he is and as a Tampa player in the offseason when he was talking about losing to the Leafs as a Leaf fan did I like him no no so he did his job again there it is again there's a guy doing his job yeah um no that's brutal and like he's battled injuries before he's playing really well you just knew the moment it happened yep brutal yep this one comes from who adam hates lighting is the uh it's the moral of the story uh but dink right yes you guys are media people perhaps you can break this down for me it's 1205 eastern right now daylight savings is dumb uh it's saturday night there's only one game in action at this
Starting point is 01:23:36 time i'm stuck at work and cannot watch the game because it seems to be blacked out on espn plus king's oiler seems like a game the league would want to have available to a large audience where are you located dude uh they they did not specify okay somewhere in the states because they're watching on espn plus so a they may not have access to it because remember it's not espn's decision uh what games they get you have to remember that if a if bally sports bought the rights to that it's bally sports's game and and so you can i know there are ways around that that i think in canada we have like sports that is like you can watch it as long as you're not in the ontario region or something like that there's certain games that are like that
Starting point is 01:24:20 but you have to remember that if i bought this and i'm a television station it's my fucking game and espn can go eat shit i got i got edmonton los angeles so yeah do i agree that that there should be some foresight for things like that i think we've talked about that before but the reality is um edmonton and edmonton la should probably always be a national western game always yes but at a certain point sometimes they just can't be it's on it's this model is unsustainable um in fact it's not uh and the the model will continue uh the i actually had a really i had a good chat with somebody who really knows their stuff do you know john shannon no yeah john shannon who was the executive producer of of hockey night in canada uh we
Starting point is 01:25:08 went out to lunch and kissed me on the cheek at a christmas party did he he's a he's a man talk about a great storyteller like crazy but what he said was like listen there are markets in in every sport in in every country where if every game was nationally available the bigger teams would eat the smaller teams alive so to prop up the value of the asset and the tv uh the tv asset too like so the prop say it's i'm gonna say it's the jets because they are a small market okay to prop up the value of the jets and their tv rights if you make the leafs and canadians and vancouver canucks and edmonton oilers available in the jets region it can cannibalize the audience so you want to protect the audience and that's why they do that and they can do that with ip
Starting point is 01:25:50 so actually uh regional blackouts will continue and probably always be there cool and everyone's just gonna steal yep a hundred percent i'm just saying that that's that's how they look at it from the business side lighting money because i was asking them about i was like you know tv why why do they do this so you're flipping on amazon buying it and making it available everybody well i think i think the difference is with a streamer i think that they'll do a national package and a good chunk of the games will be on that but i do think well here's what i think is going to happen in whenever sports nets deal expires tsn and sports net are going to split three teams each okay and then they'll split the least rights so you got seven teams then it's an equal split in
Starting point is 01:26:32 audience right so you go make your money off that and then the streamer whoever that is amazon netflix apple whoever it's going to be is going to take the national rights that to me makes the most sense and um i think that they'll get a pretty comprehensive package so you consider what so tsn gets regional games for the leafs now right yes and i think the regional in ottawa and winnipeg and that's it and that's it yeah when if you're watching leaf games most leaf games are national most leaf games do a like sports that gets a ton of leaf games so when you consider how many games the streaming service will get there will be a good chunk of national leaf games they'll probably get the monday night national they'll probably get the wednesday night
Starting point is 01:27:19 national and they'll definitely get the saturday night national meaning you know as it all stands you might only be regionally restricted on 30 games a year. Until the Leafs play the Canucks. Yeah. And then... That it's a regional. Yeah. I don't know why, but...
Starting point is 01:27:35 Enjoy Jets, Ducks, everyone. And I don't pretend to know everything, but as far as I understand it, that's the way it's all going to look. This comes from Miranda. What do y'all think about fans finding something to shout during anthems? I think gave proof through the night for Vegas and True North, strong and free for Winnipeg, are fun.
Starting point is 01:27:58 But I was watching a Caps home game, and it was the Rockets' red glare. Seems like some fan bases are forcing it. Well, and Calgary, oh, say can you see? Because of the C on the chick? Oh, I didn't know that. They do that. They do that, especially in the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:28:17 And it's not even, they're not even American. It's not even their anthem. That's hilarious. It's fine. we're all good with the words the best I've ever seen it executed was during the Golden Knights
Starting point is 01:28:30 I think it was their inaugural season and I didn't know that they did it so they're showing the the anthem singer gave proof through the and then he stopped singing and the whole building went night and I'm like oh shit
Starting point is 01:28:47 they're not losing tonight I've been there in person for one of those it's pretty what was that like was that fun oh yeah yeah no knights game is the best games i've been to like ever i've heard their in-game experience it's just yeah it's a whole other atmosphere as opposed to like every other building it's fantastic yeah no i we're cool with that i'm i'm cool with fun things i i think i think the national anthem is needs to go away it needs to go away before the games but as long as we have it we might as well have fun i get right why they started singing it because they were trying to honor the troops in world war ii and playing the
Starting point is 01:29:21 anthem in the arena was the best thing that they could do with the technology that was available like you put you put the record down you turn it on you let it spin up and then you drop the needle on it and there you go that's what they used to have to do the we have the national anthem now just because we've always had it not because it's we're not honoring troops we're not honoring the fallen we're not it's really like i don't know we're not really doing anything with it it's just here's a waste of time so why not have some fun and i feel like the teams even know it because when they want to honor the troops which they do quite often they bring them out and they we give them a standing ovation and it's a whole ceremony and they don't use the anthem for that so what the
Starting point is 01:29:59 hell is the anthem there for and if the anthem mattered that much when you watch the way american teams handle the canadian national anthem oh you should if it if the anthem actually matters to you that's the thing that should bother you not what i'm saying which is the anthem before the game don't matter i'm not a big if we're gonna do the anthem fucking do it yeah canadians do the star spangled banner with their whole chest americans is like oh canada okay oh say yeah and you yeah like they're like just and it's it's like how quickly can we get these fucking canadians i would you know what would be more respectful is if we gave them the cassette tape that they play it every high school.
Starting point is 01:30:42 Do, do, do, do. Oh. Oh. Yeah, there's a lot of speeding through the anthem, the Canadian anthem in the American cities. If you're going to do it, do it right. That, to me, is more disrespectful than not doing the
Starting point is 01:30:58 anthem at all. Also, move up the anthems. Don't have it after the scheduled puck drop. Move them up. So that bothered you this week? Yeah, because it's every weekend. Saturday night starts at like 7.20. And it's like, no, move everything up and start the game at least like 7.05. There was a season with sports then.
Starting point is 01:31:17 I think it was one of the first two years that they did it where they had games starting at like 7.45. Do you remember that? Well, okay. Whose? Canadian ones. Like Leaf games. Leaf games?
Starting point is 01:31:29 Yes, absolutely. Oh, okay. The Leafs. It was scheduled start late. You know what would have driven me nuts if I wasn't a Leaf fan and it drove me a little nuts as a Leaf fan? if i was just trying to watch the national game and the i had to be i had it foisted upon me the leafs centennial celebrations every freaking weekend oh oh my god i would have lost my mind
Starting point is 01:31:55 yeah but but welcome to having a team in the same division as the habs we've always talked about the game time is the game time the plane leaves when it leaves yeah if you want to have a 45 minute celebration tell everybody to get there early yes don't delay the game for your celebration yeah right i think that's i think that's fair dude the hab centennial was something else i think you just started earlier you tell people when pre-games that should be like pre-game game is the game start time ladies and gentlemen madams and messieurs here's every alumni ever yeah that's one thing baseball does baseball has a first pitch time like when it's like the blue jays are playing at 707 they try and start the first pitch is thrown at 707 and they do everything
Starting point is 01:32:42 before that baseball is such a big ass in seat sport yeah it's a big dad sport i want to throw one more thing at you i'm tired of the ceremonial puck drop it's always bullshit what we should be doing is a ceremonial slap shot okay i want to see at the end of the game i want to see somebody on a piece of carpet going i've never done this before but let's give it a shot falling and eating shit absolutely let's go ceremonial slap shots bring them in yeah and we don't remember the good ones we only remember the humiliating ones and 50 cents i want to see 50 cent take a slap shot jesse go ahead uh the last thing here is alexander ovechkin steve dangle do you want to speak about alexander ovechkin's one two three four five game goal streak what are you gonna
Starting point is 01:33:30 learn when are you all gonna learn he's he's not done he's not done he's still got a ways to go to catch gretzky but it's starting to look like he's gonna get there again and it's starting to look like he's doing the thing that he always does which is turning it on for the back half so alexander ovechkin has 13 goals right now in 48 games adam wild and steve dangle how many goals does Alexander Ovechkin finish with this season? 35. Better question. Holy shit. On what date does he pass Austin Matthews?
Starting point is 01:34:03 Yeah, man. Once he gets rolling, it's scary. 35. 35. I think he's going to have a light, crazy back half. I'm all over. Let's go. 32. The number that he wore on Dynamo Moscow. There you go. I'm going to say even 30. Okay. Hey, we're not
Starting point is 01:34:19 that far. Not that crazy. We all have him scoring 30 goals. He has 13. 17 more? We've seen this movie too many times. 17 and what? 25 games? That's doable.
Starting point is 01:34:32 Yeah. He can do that. Pass him the puck. Who else is scoring on the caps? Come on. Me. The Steve Dangle Podcast. Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle,
