Starting point is 00:01:00 course and clubhouse sdp live september the 21st it's a saturday night baby and it's gonna be fun and uh sorry it's friday friday right idiot dummy dummy dummy anyway listen it's all right uh we have odr hockey heroes is going to be on site and jesse yeah you get the chance can you reach down to your left and show off one of the sweet dolls that you have the very sweet dolls the cool dolls i don't i don't have one of the ones we're giving away i know but i'm just showing it off as an example because they're from you see these no that's an old one that's an old one not that one not that one the one in the plastic i have one some leftover from the playoffs yes this is one One of the Jonathan Marsh or so on McFarland toys is providing some of the
Starting point is 00:01:58 prizing down there. So you like Steve can win yourself a bunch of dolls from a figures figurines and Marcia show doesn't even play there anymore. No, it doesn't even go here. Yeah. Uh, of course,
Starting point is 00:02:12 and clubhouse.com for tickets. You can click the link. It is a description of this video. Did you have something you wanted to add? Well, I didn't want to spoil it, but okay. So we don't have to leave that up there by the way.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Yeah, no, that's fine. Um, so I, there's a chapter in my new book where i talk about like hey if you're going to be a new fan of any of the 32 teams here's the things you need to know and i go through all 32 teams and the book was due by a certain time yeah so inevitably i wasn't going to have all the
Starting point is 00:02:41 information on everything i just had to make peace with that and i was reading the audiobook or reading for the audiobook and i got to the vegas golden knights and i'm like if you want a player uh whose jersey to get jonathan marches so it'd be a great oh that's actually that's way better now i like that that's great and i had to make an addendum in the audio book where i go never mind adam did you say the event was on a friday no it's on a saturday oh okay okay i i did say it was on a friday i said saturday and then i switched to friday i was like wait a second it is a saturday i was half listening i was like it's definitely not no it's on a See you Thursday, everyone.
Starting point is 00:03:16 No, but here's what it is. The script here has a Friday in it, and I instantly was like, well, you can't trust your own gut on this one, Adam, because you can't trust your gut, period. And then I realized that it was, that's when the tickets went on sale. They went on sale on a Friday.
Starting point is 00:03:30 There were only a few left, but it is St. Catherine's round two, and we will see you there next Saturday. Yes. It'll be great. Oh, so it is Saturday. And you'll be able to, yes. The 21st.
Starting point is 00:03:39 The 21st. Yeah. Hey, by the way. It's going to be a lot of fun. It's going to be a blast, and we'll all be able to go there and relax. Do you know why? Why?
Starting point is 00:03:46 Because the Nicky Bobby saga is over! Yay! All right. But is his time in Toronto over? We don't know. Maybe. I will tell you. I don't understand what's happening.
Starting point is 00:03:57 So here's what we know. Nick Robertson signed yesterday for $875,000. I am not an insider, but other insiders, Frank Cervalli, I think, specifically, I think now Nick Galberga also said that uh uh the Leafs are going to explore potentially trading him um now I have to tell you that to me that doesn't make a ton of sense no and also they announced it it's not just they
Starting point is 00:04:24 signed him they're like and we signed him everybody yeah and it's on our Instagram and then Nick announced it like he posted it on his Instagram with no emojis but like you know he's here he's a Leaf here he is in a jersey I listen I get that he's not thrilled but he will be when he starts putting goals um uh now uh it also seems odd that the leafs who have a history of rfas running them over would sign this guy and then let him get what he wants like you see here's the thing like like just to give you an idea of how bad it is you think i'm talking about marner or matthews or neil andrew no no no connor timmons makes 1.1 million dollars rfas holy moly rfas have run this organization over for most of the last decade.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Alex Kerfoot, 3.5 million, four years. And there was not a ton of resume there. No, there sure wasn't. There's lots of guys where you go, why? RFAs have run this team over for years. Here's the opportunity to go, nope, not doing it right after this point. And so to me, trading him now, especially when you're a little weak on the left side,
Starting point is 00:05:31 doesn't make a lot of sense. I just don't get it. I don't get it. it could it just be that he's still unhappy and they are they acquiesce to everybody's demands always and when somebody's unhappy they're like oh yeah let's get him out of here let's do the right thing could that be the organization just continuing to do the right thing for their guy no the right thing is is trying to ice the best team possible and win yeah but the right thing in terms of their relationship with this nhl player like it seems like the police always want
Starting point is 00:05:58 to just be they do yeah let's be nice and give them all this money trade them even though we shouldn't trade home you know i like to think that's over i hope it's over it doesn't feel like it no the right thing to do is keep this guy who makes under 900 grand and you need a left they are are they so here's the thing i'm the trade rumor right now like i have no reason to look at the report out there and be like that's a bullshit report they're making it up um but i'm gonna say it is it does it just doesn't make sense so one thing in the days leading up i saw not insiders just regular old hockey fans on twitter go he's gonna sign for 875 000 do you know why because that's all they have so yanni hockenpah i cannot believe how many
Starting point is 00:06:48 times over the last couple months i've said that freaking name after saying it maybe a grand total of five times in my entire life it's also very entertaining it's a fun name it's a yanni hawk and paw i i am so excited for imagine he goes off for 20 goals no i'm kidding so i'd be happy with three listen name your dog you're you're getting you're getting very distracted from the point hawk and pause that's see there it is so sorry sorry sorry to yann and hockey hockey pause on the point um here it is hawk and pa is supposed to be making 1.5 million right that's right that's been rumored since july 1st yep 1.5 million big money hawk the leafs have 400,333 dollars in cap space according to puckpedia after the nick robertson signing that means they need to make
Starting point is 00:07:40 up exactly 1.1 almost exactly 1.1 million connor timmons makes 1.1 million bury him in the minors or wave him and he gets claimed done you get nick robertson under contract 875 hawking pa 1.5 done perfect you have exactly 333 dollars i think that's great in cap space that's great but and it's all solved and all good and all great and now they have two guys on ptos and i'm like wait maybe i don't understand anymore but the thing you outlined isn't their plan at all because the plan is to sign max patcher ready to a contract by the time his pto is over and steven lorenz could easily make this team so so there's more roster moves to come you put it exactly the way i would put it uh lorenz i like and i think has a chance to make this team cj said do you
Starting point is 00:08:32 the cj tweet up sure like he he wasn't just like oh yeah he's gonna come on a pto and and we'll see what happens that's not what he said that's not what he said at all as i stall the lorenz one or the patches one the patches one yeah the patches one here you go what do you say max patch ready will attend leaf's training camp on a pto if that was it i'd be like well yeah we'll see then he says expect him to sign a contract before the season patch ready is on this team someone has to go well like if if he does his pto and he looks terrible in preseason he won't be signing that contract i think he's on this team either way i agree with you they just need the roster moves to do it well someone not named connor tim connor timmons is the free space he's gone
Starting point is 00:09:23 yep they can't afford him he's gone someone currently on this team can't be on this team anymore yeah they actually have people fighting for roster spots which is i think that's great do you want to play who's that gonna be sure so i'm gonna list a name i'm just gonna go down the roster on puckpedia and you're gonna guess who's that's gonna be and you're gonna say yes or no okay austin matthews maybe no william neilander no john tavares no mitch marner no max domy no david kampf maybe callie yarncroke maybe but here's my question everyone's like oh just get rid of kampf problem solved who are your penalty killers and who's taking face-offs on the penalty kill kampf it should be better than he is like i want him to play better but he's also been very useful
Starting point is 00:10:15 over the last couple of years. Well, in very specific situations. Yeah, absolutely. Do we want Austin Matthews? I'm not confident in his play outside of that, but here's what I'll say to that, Stephen Jesse. Conf does the one thing, and that's actually two things. He takes penalties, or he takes shorthanded face-offs,
Starting point is 00:10:34 and he is your Johnny on the spot when you need someone to win a face-off in overtime, especially the opening face-off. No, I think what you have... Who's taking all the shorthanded face-offs? Yarncroke can? Yarncroke can. Steven Lawrence, I think they maybe want to see what he can do. He can.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I'm not sure what his face-off percentage is. Kevin Stenland was his center. He can play center, but he's probably in the NHL a winger. Yeah, I think that that deal. And also not under contract. That deal probably needs to go. Not under contract. That deal needs to go.
Starting point is 00:11:05 So someone needs to go if Pacioretty signs. If Pacioretty and Lawrence sign, two people need to go. we've sat on david comp as a maybe he's a maybe yarn croak maybe okay he's too useful people forget man he is useful he's useful he's not he's not great at anything he's not but at 2.1 million a guy who bags 15 20 every year can play center plays effective playing every forward position yeah like defensive sit forward i'm sorry that's worth 2.1 i feel like we've gone back in time where we're nickel and diming the utility guys again when the real problem is you have four guys
Starting point is 00:11:47 making $4.5 billion. Let's just, but let's get- No, but since you've committed to having four guys making $4.5 billion, I think Yarncroak at 2.1 is useful, but you might not be able to afford him. So he's a no. Oh, so he's a maybe.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Oh, okay, you're putting him in the maybe. We got two names who might leave this team by the time training camp is over. Conf and Yarncroft. Let's continue. Reeves. Yeah, maybe. He's variable.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Yeah, you just run him through waves. I just don't think that's going to happen. I think they want him. I think too many guys like him. Well, I've seen so many people be like, why don't the Leafs simply do this? Because they don't want to. That's why. They don't want to.
Starting point is 00:12:31 Is he in the know? It's a good idea to have him. No, he's still on the maybe. Okay, so we've got three guys. McMahon? No. No. Dewar?
Starting point is 00:12:38 No. Nice. Maybe. Dewar? i'll say maybe so if conf goes do closer to no then if conf goes doer is your conf replacement right yes and i think that's why they got him because they need they need another guy to take face off shorthanded well and he's not maybe great at it but he's a good penalty killer this is the thing he's like half the price but like he's also just not as good guys no he's not it's crazy so
Starting point is 00:13:05 far we've built a list of four names who could leave this team by the end of training camp okay yep nice no no uh robertson uh i mean you have to put him in maybe so he's five yeah homeberg maybe i don't 800 grand i don't think they want to get rid of him but like also there's a real good chance he doesn't make the team and then you gotta wave him okay so that's six guys i would so much rather i'd rather look into trades for almost anyone uh that i listed as a maybe i'd rather trade any one of them or lose them on waivers than holmberg he's like six of six you know if you're ranking them yeah yeah and then on d riley tanev oel no timmy mccabe ben oh you got lilligran i i dude okay i here listen if hawk and paul wins a spot it's not benoit that's out he's a lefty
Starting point is 00:14:00 it's not mccabe that's out it's lilligran he's gonna be making three million dollars and he might be a healthy scratch this year and next year and oel by the way oel is going to run pp2 i think they're going to spread the power play over to uh two lines rather than load up one and you look at you look at timothy lilligren and so so what was being said yesterday about nick robertson when it came to being trained well they needed to sign him because an acquiring team if they're not if the players if you acquire an rfa you lose basically all your leverage because when you and we did this with jonathan bernier back in the day who remembers that that was fun right so you trade for an rfa and the rfa goes well you clearly really want me yeah so you're gonna you're gonna
Starting point is 00:14:39 meet my price you already spent an asset you're not just gonna lose that asset for nothing and not sign me i want what i want 45 what is what is timothy lilligren guys former first round pick yep 24 years old slight underperformance signed for two years at a manageable hit right shot defenseman why would you trade nick robertson and get a fourth rounder when you could listen and it doesn't have to be i mean maybe it does have to be by training camp or you could wave one of the other guys and bury them because a lot of people just go through waivers and don't get claimed but if you want to trade somebody right shot d mid-season that's pretty valuable it's a good argument and and right shot and you can sell it like this whether or not it's true
Starting point is 00:15:23 puck moving defenseman right shot playmaking potential pp2 quarterback timothy lilligren to you rebuilding the old p word all i'm saying follows them around it just potential it's certainly and listen how but that's what did you think now listen for the last three years i've been seeing people online go this could be the year that timothy lilligren breaks out it could be and i know now i know i understand how bill murray feels with each passing year It's Groundhog Day. With each passing year, that percentage of likelihood goes further and further down.
Starting point is 00:15:57 What am I doing here this morning? What am I doing in this building? Jesse, just upload last year's Leafs preview. You're out on Lilligran. Upload last year's season preview. And here, we can do some anime dubs. So when I say, hey, but the real question is, can Riley have sex?
Starting point is 00:16:14 Can Riley have success? I mean, he can. No, he can. We know that. Yeah, Tessa was pregnant. right yeah they gave she gave birth oh congrats so it's happened at least once there you go we gotta do uh riley car watch by the way oh yes we gotta check in on nhl get a new car watch oh gosh oh no we're gonna have a fun year with nhl car watch
Starting point is 00:16:39 i like i want to get the segment i sponsored jesse came up with the segment all because i accidentally said sex all right no no no it was from last show when we're talking about Stutzland is sure so off track. Can Riley have success with, and then when I say TJ Brody, just dub me into Chris Tannev. The Atlanta Falcons from the Simpsons. Is Timothy Lilligren going to be in the lineup every night, or is he going to be pushed out by Yanni Hockenpah?
Starting point is 00:17:10 John Klingberg. You know what? It's good to keep star talent, But I don't know if they can afford at least half a dozen players on this roster. Well, so the great thing is, is what Lou Lamrell always said, which is if you have time, use it. Well, and they do. They got a month. You know what?
Starting point is 00:17:29 It'll be interesting to see if Craig Berube has success with this team. And if he doesn't have success, can you really blame him? Because he just got here. Like, holy shit. We've built a list of eight players. who by the start of the season might not be on the Toronto Maple Leafs. That's right.
Starting point is 00:17:49 If you want me to run it down. There's nothing wrong with that. I think that's good. Connor Timmons. Yep. Timothy Lilligren. He's gone. Timmons, Lilligren.
Starting point is 00:17:57 We'll go to Nick. Nicky Bob's on that list. Sure. Dewar, Reeves, Jarnkrok, Konf. That's seven. My bad. Seven. Did you say Holmberg?
Starting point is 00:18:07 Oh, and Holmberg. There's the eight. Because he might get waived. I don't want that to happen. So I don't want to go down this road. But is that a result of... If you bring up April, you have so many guys locked up to the giant money
Starting point is 00:18:23 that there's so many... No, let me just finish. It's not about April. It's about you have the top-end guys locked up that you have so many transient players that it leaves you at a point at the end of training camp where eight different guys could leave this team because so much of the salary gap...
Starting point is 00:18:40 But they're not all eight at once. No. It might be one or two. and by the way that's normal a lot of teams do that the issue with the leafs in previous years is we basically went in and we're like who's going to play right wing on the fourth line everybody else is locked up i like that there's competition adam if i was me okay i'm by the way i'm starting a core four jar for all of us and i'm starting an april jar and we're giving all the money to you wanted to promote it easter seal oh son of a gun you see yes son of a gun
Starting point is 00:19:10 is gonna be rich this year they are no listen okay so i'm your friend i'm your pal i've known you for 20 plus years 20 years yeah unbelievable a long time so i'm i'm the same guy and i'm sitting right here in this chair and we have our business and our show together with one difference i have eight tentacles growing off of my face and they are long and slimy and stinky and they stretch down to the floor okay uh-huh and are four of them tattooed with i just got here yeah yes they are i just know it's it's on all eight of them it's it says it on both sides right and every time i'm looking at you and i'm talking and jesse says something i turn around like this and i slap you with my slimy tentacles right and you go oh and i go adam are you gonna bring up the tentacles
Starting point is 00:19:59 every show and you'd say yeah they're slapping me in the face and you'd be like well steve it's valid to bring up your tentacles every show because it gets in the way of literally everything we do yeah that's why i think it's wrong to avoid talking about the playoffs or the core four because at the end of the day it all comes back to that with this stupid team i'm starting a jar it's like there's a just a crater at center ice a meteor hits scotia bank arena pierce the roof and there's just a fucking hole at center ice and you know there's a press conference and brandon shanahan's standing there indignantly going how many times are we going to bring up the crater guys it gets in the way of every aspect of business brandon shanahan hires
Starting point is 00:20:48 like a troll farm of of and then like makes leaf fans would be like could you guys stop talking about this kind of like brian colangelo did like get a new topic no oh yeah get a new slant get a new slant yeah it's insane it is insane now okay so we got nikki bob guys nikki bob stay yeah eight guys nikki bob he stay i think you think yeah i think he's staying now rumors are wrong okay i think the rumors are wrong because it doesn't it doesn't make sense it really to me it doesn't make sense i don't want to run through the max patch ready era which today officially began as He signed his PTO. It was announced by the team on their Instagram page.
Starting point is 00:21:23 So their Instagram, kind of official. Instagram, they're making out. So we can confirm for you that once the Leafs, it was reported yesterday by a bunch of people, but once the Leafs have done their business, sounds like we've taken them for a walk and they're going to the bathroom, Max Pacioretty will be a Leaf this year.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Cool. And so the question is not whether or not max patch ready will be a leaf this year yes pto but he's he's gonna play in the leaf on the leaf this year um the question is he might not be good well i i think that i think the agreement's done because there were multiple teams in on this adam has no sources on this so i don't know or or i'm not saying that they that it's done i think it's done what i will say is what did alan say verbatim he didn't say anything he doesn't tell us stuff let me see your phone what the question is your yellow phone case the question is what do the leaf see him at banana phone how did i never make
Starting point is 00:22:24 that connection call it the banana phone ring i like this banana bitch you'd be different steve's with his otter box i know i still need to get like a blue one or something anyway what did alan say where we were yeah it was reported by frank yeah i keep going frank was the one that was like it's so he's gonna be a leaf uh-huh the question is what are what do they see him as and what do they see these guys like as a group as right they need to replace the guy that they signed on the left side last season who had a bad start and a really good finish and i thought was great against boston that's tyler bertuzzi they need to find a way to do that oh you think he's getting up on the first line i didn't say that but i think what's interesting is thornton
Starting point is 00:23:14 here's the competition okay here's what we got the list so uh true living wants you can tell you can tell he wants competition at camp and i'm taking this from uh maple leaf hot stove he said even with nick robertson in the full 28 year old bobby mcmahon this is anthony petrelli by the way uh on the inside track for a top six six left wing spot um bobby mcmahon's coming off an injury his main competition patch ready is robertson uh robertson put up 26 27 and 56 last year uh the rate that um bobby mcmahon put up is not dissimilar to what patch ready put up so let me tell you bertuzzi was a 0.54 points per game last year 0.54 right so we're gonna moneyball good finish we're gonna moneyball this okay 0.54 points per game oh we got to replace him in the
Starting point is 00:24:01 aggregate bobby mcmahon yes 0.42 points per game that's good robertson 0.48 points per game also good patcher ready 0.49 points per game that's pretty good matthew nice 0.44 points per game good and do not forget do not forget i don't know why people are forgetting alex kneelander he doesn't have a deal 0.54 points per game so we're gonna throw another name in the equation where are these players playing listen to me 0.54 points per game he's the one that actually matches Bertuzzi's points per game but with Columbus if you take out the five or six games he played with Pittsburgh it's a 0.65 points per game he was yeah but if you take it if you take that sample size at the end of the year he's on like a 40 goal pace
Starting point is 00:24:49 and it's like okay that's probably not sustainable why not no it's absurd well and so here's where it gets tricky though because I told you uh Bertuzzi is a 0.54 they're not going to match that necessarily patch ready has had the summer to to work out and he's notably crazy about workout and health and all that stuff oh yeah half of his points basically came on the power play last year now those don't count as points but no in all seriousness he's probably not going to get the power play time he got in washington here in toronto and what i thought was interesting and i'm going to go back to maple leaf's uh hot stove while patch ready's shooting percentage was low so were his shot rates his 2.02 shots per game was the lowest since his second season in
Starting point is 00:25:32 the league 15 years ago um glass half full take would be he shot a stunningly low 4.2 percent he's a career 11.1 percent shooter good lord uh he said that anthony said that should bounce back to some degree he all spent the summer training for the season uh not recovering from a surgery or serious injury uh that makes a difference for an nhl player something oliver ackman larson admitted he benefited from last season when he rebounded in florida so the question will not be i think i think the question would be if he wins it for my question with patch ready is can he sustain it right so so here this my mentions were full of this from washington capitals fans because patch ready was on the capitals last year and it wasn't all that great and fans didn't really take
Starting point is 00:26:19 to him as a result you score a billion goals they'll take to anybody the guy the guy that the guy that came back from two achilles injuries playing at all is pretty impressive i know but just wait ian olin from russian machine never breaks the capital signed patch ready to take goal scoring pressure off alexander ovechkin he had four goals in 47 games of more concern his stride slowed and 11 of his 23 points came uh last year on the power play four of which were secondary assists get excited steve so listen last year was bad also as you pointed out last year doesn't match the rest of his career also of note the rest of his career predates two achilles injuries and i guess what i'm trying to say here is it's impossible to evaluate how he's going to
Starting point is 00:27:13 look yes um without seeing him on the ice yeah um like if the leafs factored him in so if they're like you know what he's gonna play top six how the where'd you what are you basing that on well it's it's the thinness on the left side i know but like like that's i mean they gave they adam if they gave it to they gave it to nice adam what's gonna happen day one when he's on like second line left wing because i feel like that's a real possibility a hundred percent first line no no i think matthews marner patches no second you oh you think first line they're not putting them with tavaris how full is your diaper gonna be on that lfr you know right now right now some of us you're dripping into it here's what i like you know
Starting point is 00:28:07 what here's what i want you know what dude first of all vivid word but like no you i've already been through my helicopter parent stage where oh pillow here pillow here pillow here can't get hurt can't get hurt can't hurt and at some point your kid has to discover the world and you got to let them fall down and be like see well and like how many so my question like you know what matthews Marner I hope they can bring the best out of Max Pacioretty like again I don't think Jesse I don't think that's necessarily a lot early today upload last year's season preview and dub it it's the same fucking thing I also don't I think you're wrong I think you're wrong on the Marner thing I don't think that's a lock you saw how well Domi and Matthews played last year I don't know why
Starting point is 00:28:54 everybody has him slotted at center that's not what Berube likes at center he didn't it didn't perform well at center why is max domi all of a sudden the third line center on this team again and they're trading david kauf well i don't think kauf can play third line center either makes him too expensive so so come on dude who's played like four games at center for this team they are missing you're guys you're putting holmberg on three c probably and then who's four c well i would put would you put um i think kauf's gone no i think that's the guy who's gone Here, this is my new favorite thing from Leafs Nation. Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Minton's going there. Who is leaving the team? Guys, they have 333. The Leafs have less money in their bank account than most of the people listening to the show. Do you understand? Steve, you don't need a training camp. You're in mid-season. I know.
Starting point is 00:29:45 I think you're hung up on the wrong thing, though. Why do we assume that Matthews and Marner are just going to play together? I know the script by heart. I don't know why this shouldn't be the thing that gets you to this. I know. like it's wild this max patch already having a pto and then signing a contract no i'm the scientist in a disaster movie but the earth has already exploded eight times sure and we're just gonna see maybe it won't explode this time what the fuck are we doing tread tightly tread lightly

Starting point is 00:34:24 when alexander the great died he got a fever he's 31 years old he'd conquered half the world i'm older now you got a fever and he died yeah he got apparently it was a fever now there are rumors that he was poisoned but nobody's ever been able to confirm that this was like 2 bc or something yeah this was well well before 2 bc we're talking like 300 bc 300 bc okay um alexander the great he conquered um from macedonia all the way down to egypt all the way over to the borders of india this guy was is crazy wow and when he was dying they didn't have an heir they said alexander who should your empire go to and he is supposed to have said the strongest you know jordan sparks actually said that jordan sparks also said it yeah how are you gonna conquer with
Starting point is 00:35:11 no rad true living is going the left side shut up it's going to the strongest why does love always feel like a battlefield and that's what it's going to be okay by the way that was a jordan sparks reference i'm just throwing that out there i used to play that song 101.3 the bounce shout out halifax can can you deal with the fact that we don't have the answers i don't know margo all right i don't know and i'm gonna find out in training camp who takes the job which is why last week i was like yo nick robertson you have such a great opportunity here it's not the same you actually have people i didn't say anything it's not the same i didn't it's not the same i didn't say anything it's actual people graduating it's not it's how about
Starting point is 00:35:53 how the fuck how is easton cowan supposed to make this team how isn't he supposed to make he doesn't play the first nine games who goes he's making the team who goes down who's dude scratch fucking cares if that guy makes it yeah but if you're bringing if you're bringing in patch already then you're already plus a guy so you got to be now minus two guys from the guys that are here if easton cowan is the best of that group which i suspect he can be uh i don't care which it's so easton cowan's just gonna carve through like eight guys like scott pilgrim why can't like just right how is this supposed no but you gotta you gotta provide an answer of the eight guys that we listed now you gotta take away so i i think conf's gone that's worth two elcs at
Starting point is 00:36:36 right there no but i have to also also like count of the heads you can't have all those bodies on the roster okay well just throw some guys on if you listen are you asking me to literally go through the entire training camp right now no because i think there's guys on the roster who deserve a spot ahead of of the young kids who haven't proven anything and they were slotting in patches we also have to take away players so if you if you advocate for a player to be on the team you're also advocating for them to get rid of play yes yeah i think that's important i'm good with that can't which which guy are you are you committing that whoever sucks the most at training camp and wild card pick to lilligren only moving one of those two makes any kind of difference if
Starting point is 00:37:19 you move lilligren and you move camp that's five and five and you're not moving both why not because it's not going to happen adam this team is not bold this team is not it's barely interesting they're not going to do that i think the left side's very interesting actually i disagree with you there it's interesting listen it's interesting if you're listening to this show and it's interesting if you're a fucking nerd the vast majority of leaf fans are like can you win some playoff games they don't give a you think the vast majority you're all sick puppies all right and we're all sick friggin puppies the vast majority of leaf fans right now are not sitting there on their second coffee going where the fuck does pontus homebridge slot in they're not doing
Starting point is 00:37:58 that they're just not doing it why not they should be they ought to what else it's a better use of your energy 100 i think i don't think trading lily would go over well with the fan base i don't think they give a shit i think i don't think they care yeah i don't think they're over i don't i don't know they're not keeping lilligran because they're like oh man we need to appease the fans like i'm sorry i don't think that's that's the reason you you make your decisions obviously like you don't base it off everybody would be traded if you're trading based on fan reaction i just don't think it'd go i think a lot of people would like to see it work here in toronto and would like to see them keep trying i would like i want it i want to see yeah i want a ferrari i
Starting point is 00:38:36 want to see it keep working but do you understand lilligran stock went up uh this past spring because another guy did well what do you mean who like gust gust of forsling did well and people are like well don't want to lose lilligran because he might be him despite they're not really being an abundance of evidence that he can be there's no way he's forcing is that because they well they also some men also i when carolina waved forsling right i know they didn't trade forsling i know i'm talking about trading a right shot d-man under contract okay i think that's more valuable if you're so afraid of waving a guy because he might end up being someone why are we now having a conversation about potentially waving like six different men because what's
Starting point is 00:39:19 going on i i think that there's probably age differences and and i think i think to to paint that broadly is a little bit almost everyone we mentioned okay so we're sending down nice steve come on i agree steve come on so that means we're waving somebody right the point i'm trying to make is no one is getting sent down so what are they doing they're waving david conf oh no somebody no they're fucking not they're not why not yeah i don't think it's happening they're not going to do it yeah you think craig barubi's coming to town and he's going to be like he's gonna be like mike babcock where i'm like okay you left me with pear lindholm that was my best defensive option on the pk yeah and then you took him away for nick patan
Starting point is 00:40:02 you suck ass and i hate you no wonder babcock was such a shitty employee he was a fucking asshole anyway sorry i know but he was though but there's so many instances where you could look back and go you're an asshole oh yeah we all he might have been right about i just didn't expect you to get so hot and bothered in your head over no you know what i i never have coffee before i come to the show anymore i my first coffee is sitting in front of me when i yeah fuck i'm just going today i'm just really um i don't i i agree with you that true living is not really the guy to just wave david conf that doesn't sound he's not gonna do it yeah that doesn't sound like true living no and it's okay i just don't understand how you got how you could
Starting point is 00:40:46 possibly be upset about a battle for left wing i'm not upset no i think that's good what i'm trying to figure out though is how it works is how it works and no one's given a good yeah because no one had one they haven't got on the ice yet we're trying to figure that out they're just gonna wave the guy who for the last two or three years has been the only defensive option here you go team uh uh team has an injury needs a player yeah call him okay that's back at Seneca. Oh, we need to replace him on the docks. He's going to be out six to eight weeks. Defenseman? Forward? Who knows?
Starting point is 00:41:19 No one does. No one. It's a mystery. So they've got it wrong. He called them a defenseman. Oh, yeah. No, he's definitely a forward. But my point is that we can't know that today. Let them skate. Let them figure it out. Let it go to the strongest.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Come into camp. Kick ass. Turn the job. It's also bad podcasting if we were just sitting here and we're just like, you know what? Let's just wait. Let's just see. Let's just wait and see. Instead of like commenting on how this could possibly get done,
Starting point is 00:41:48 let's just wait. Hey, Adam, tell you what. Let's cut the segment off right now. May the best man win next. No, because they're doing something, and it doesn't seem like there's any avenue to solve it. May the best man win. Good luck to all parties.
Starting point is 00:42:02 Adam, next. What you got next? I think I don't think that's what I was saying, and I think that's a complete mischaracterization of what I was saying. Adam, why did you say that verbatim? i didn't say that what i'm trying to get who got the second is away from the fact that the obvious fact that they have no money they have no that's an obvious fact we get it i get it i've heard it i know yeah people get like what are they going to do people get hurt i understand but as of like
Starting point is 00:42:28 okay you can't plan for okay it's stupid to plan our team is going to enter the season 100 healthy and then it doesn't and you go oh shit now what do we do that's stupid but i think it's also odd to be like well someone's getting hurt someone's for sure getting hurt you know i didn't mean on the leafs i meant like another team needs a player people always get hurt in camp right there's always a an injury there's always moves which makes it the same a bad move makes it more likely to lose someone to waivers and it ain't gonna be camp i like i i don't have what i don't have time for is uh shit that has like a one percent chance of happening like so many people like oh just what about this has a one point one percent chance of no like i've seen people be like
Starting point is 00:43:19 wave camp or wave reeves and i'm like what are you doing they're not doing that okay you know i i actually i think that they're not as hot on camp as you seem to think they are i think i mean they sat him last year i don't think i think tree got got here signed into a contract that was way too much money it's too much and i think they're and i think they saw him in a third line role and then actually saw it executed and they're like oh he can't do that okay so he's he's gone we live in a world where he's gone who takes his responsibilities do we want the guy who scored 69 goals last year to get 60 70 percent of the defensive zone draws no no do we want John Tavares taking those defensive zone draws potentially nah he might win the draw but
Starting point is 00:44:09 if he doesn't you're fucked it's not very good do we want Max Domi taking the defensive I don't think Max Domi's playing center this year well there you go do we want like I'm I'm I'm resurrecting it it's there's a hole there's a rectangular hole in the ground with a big fist mark through it william kneelander do we want william kneelander taking those d zone draws no is it callie yarn croak who's played four games at center over the last half decade you know what i mean we're running out of guys who are we going is it doer i said it in july they're missing a centerman oh they're definitely missing a centerman so let's make the problem worse right i was doing the leaf season season preview stuff and i just landed on that the team at this point on september 11th just
Starting point is 00:44:55 feels like a giant question mark so it's very hard to predict like where they're going to be throughout the season and where i'm landing right now is just i don't know i don't know where the roster is going to be on opening night i don't know how the new new pieces are going to lay out and yeah no i didn't say it was good or bad i was just saying that's that's what i was looking at the roster and i was saying so there's a lot up in the air right now for the least going into the next three weeks my point is that is a good thing we have had way too much of here's the line this is what it's going to be way too much of it and it doesn't work it doesn't work i think the coffee's making me sound angrier than i am i'm just fired up okay it's just passion i don't think you're
Starting point is 00:45:31 angry no it's just passion sorry right i think it's been a long time since you've seen a battle at training camp hey everyone don't worry i'm this jacked up and we're about to talk about bill daily what was the last what was the last battle you saw at training camp true battle at Leafs training camp for any position exactly that's sad exactly this is why you're reacting this way you're not used to this this is how teams should operate Jay Rosehill fought his literally fought his way he got into like nine fights in the preseason the last time I saw that was this competitive really for a lot of these positions was like I am maybe third line in 2018 like we're talking about the left side here is i think absolutely fascinating going in
Starting point is 00:46:18 and i don't know what they're going to do but i do think they've got some pretty good options how many times like and this isn't a knock on patch ready like like i've seen the discussion like jvr right now might be a better player than max patch ready but i think patch ready has a higher ceiling patch ready as a higher likelihood of getting back to what he was and continuing to play longer yes yeah yes uh like jvr's got one two max like he might be done now um patch ready he also might be done now but i don't think so i think he's got some time to go um how many times though have we gone into the season and it's like well they're gonna try nick richie there ah they're gonna try jimmy vc there ah they're gonna try joe thornton there well that's the
Starting point is 00:47:09 strategy right they're gonna have to do how's it going and when you're not great when you're good in a position in your four group you don't have a competition for it because you have a guy so the problem with that is that they did take away the competition and they gave they put joe thornton next to austin matthews how fucking crazy is that that's a lunacy but because it was the pandemic it was like the 150th most crazy thing happening that day guys i like a battle i want a battle and yeah it's not ideal that it's the top six or whatever but at the end of the day the other guys on the other side are matthews marner tavaris nylander there i think those are pretty good players yeah there are one thing i don't want to get caught up in like okay so here's the problem
Starting point is 00:47:56 with the joe thornton conversation a lot of us looked at that and went thornton starting the season with matthews and i don't it was marner or nylander oh okay well as long as they don't go into the playoffs like that and then they did yes so like cc starting the season with riley well as long as they don't go into the playoff they did that right so if patch already starts the season in the top six it's not the end of the world but unless he shows that he's the patch ready of old i don't want that in april i don't don't show alan this i'm putting a lot of i'm putting a lot of stock into nick robertson guys i and i i think if he just listen if you're pissed off good yeah i want to see some angry leaves i've said that before i want to see some of these guys
Starting point is 00:48:47 get pissed now he might be pissed i'd rather him be pissed at the other team rather than his own team frankly i want him to shoot the puck like he hates it i exactly no so if that's a guy like nick robertson really under below average skater way above average shot knows where to be on the offensive side of the puck just make your defensive game simple be simple get into position play with these elite players score a bunch of goals craig berube has a really really like the the depiction of him or the reputation of him is so interesting and i feel like it's wrong what do you think it is well because he when he was a player he was a hard ass he was he was chief and he beat the shit out of people and the st louis blues team that won the stanley cup was kind of known for
Starting point is 00:49:32 being big and beating the shit out of people if you go and look at their regular season record like his teams win games and his team score goals yeah like it's not just a bunch of meatheads well no petrangelo and and uh ryan o'reilly at the top of his game and yeah uh tarasenko absolutely um you know kairu and friggin robert thomas yeah loading it up and i mean we could sit here all day um a player like nick robertson might not match what you think the st louis blues of the past few years have been but i think craig baruba can use a guy like that yeah they weren't all ivan barbashevs right oh and there's another guy yeah so i'm saying he made him a mill um jesse my bet is nice patcher ready mcmahon no nice patcher ready yeah nice patcher ready
Starting point is 00:50:25 mcmahon robertson left side that's my what's steve what's yours one more time i think it's going to be nice patcher ready mcmahon robertson what's yours just four names and not a 10 minute explanation i first of all because i know you'll be like how do we get here and you'll explain how you got to that no i i just want the name i don't hate that at all um i just want to know how robertson is going to be used because i don't love them on the fourth line what what's your four left side i like your opening night i like your four you think same thing well you're putting me on the spot yeah that's what i'm trying i'm trying no i know give me your four prediction let me see your computer i need your computer for what puckpedia or daily face
Starting point is 00:51:13 puckpedia or sorry what is this no this is daily face on daily face off okay okay there you go so here's here's what here's what they have nice matthews marner mcmahon tavaris kneelander Holmberg Domi Yarncroke Dewar Kampf Reeves alright well to hell with all this to hell with everything below the second line so I would probably
Starting point is 00:51:40 want I think I'd switch Nylander and Marner and I think I'd put Robertson where McMahon is I'd drop McMahon down to where Holmberg is so we'd have Nyes Matthews Marner nope nice matthews kneelander robertson tavaris marner mcmahon
Starting point is 00:52:02 it has to be domi i think it has to be domi i don't love them they're full-time there isn't a 3c on the roster so it has to be domi domi yarn croak you could always switch domi and yarn croak but i don't love that either and then oh man you reeves is probably in the opening night lineup because he's going to get into a fight in the first game and he's going to flex his box up. You have to put Pacioretty there then. Oh, Patches, fuck. I just wanted your four
Starting point is 00:52:31 on the left side. I have no idea. You can't do that, Jesse. Yeah, I don't think he has the ability. Yeah, but I need to know the rest of it. Is it possible? No. Adam, what's your four? Is it possible? Just a question. Okay. Is it possible that the Leafs do have Fraser Minton
Starting point is 00:52:47 in there at the center? It is. He played nine games last yeah he wasn't he looked out of place outside of preseason he looked good regular season not so good i can see it there's also mystery injury and i'm like mystery ltir yeah and part of me is like bobby mcmahon finished the season hurt is it him i don't know someone hurt themselves in off-season training and we don't know who it is yeah so then domey's i think three left wing right or uh right or sorry i believe last year it was bertuzzi left matthews middle domi right so if domi's gonna play the wing it's likely the right on so then nylander does he go to
Starting point is 00:53:29 he can switch third line like how he was last year with quote third line nylander playing center and tavaris going to the left no no abundance of issues it does yeah but don't they're not gonna do it but they should look at that's that's not real life i know unfortunately i don't know i need more time i need more time i can't do it right now adam do you have an answer do 20 minute video on this steve who's your left wing my left wings are obviously i i i have to be honest with you matt nyes i think needs to earn that spot on the top line and it's it's he was great in the playoffs adam i think it's gone on longer than five seconds and i'm furious i think i think it's not outrageous to say you put domi and matthews back together uh and if domi's got to play the
Starting point is 00:54:13 right side he plays the right side they have flipped nylander there before so what about a a nylander robertson patcher oh you put nylander on the lylander left wing and he's good on it so so i say nylander uh-huh i'm gonna say i'm gonna put my faith in nick robertson don't let me down that's so two okay here line two you got robertson or can i throw something out i want robertson on line two can i throw something out there what if daily face off is accidentally like completely unintentionally skewing the narrative here because we're acting like they are
Starting point is 00:54:47 because Domi didn't play center in the playoffs we're acting yeah but he is a center like he can't not on the least he can though like what I'm getting at is people are acting like playing left wing is a specialized skill and a lot of wingers in
Starting point is 00:55:03 the league and in this lineup can play either of them okay so oh man they're so thin Nylander over to the left problem solved uh domey over to the right someone else slots into you see what i mean yeah sure yeah i want i want see here i want marner tavaris together because i want marner speed with tavaris so you have nylander um uh robertson mcmahon and then uh max patch ready on the fourth that's what i think and i also think you need somebody who is going to uh drop fists with people
Starting point is 00:55:37 nize is great for that but if you have can nize play the right uh we haven't seen he hasn't at the nhl level i don't think not that i can think yeah you gotta have nize on the he's got to be in the top six because he is very good i'm sure he could yeah i don't know well and the other thing with robertson is if you go and look at his goals like from last season a bunch of them are on the right side of the ice because he's got that touch of death you you pass it to him cross ice his left-handed shot on the right side bang that's what i was thinking with kneelander on the on the flip side of that right playing your offhand dude you have uh matthews or tavaris centering kneelander on the left robertson on the right that's a lot of fun how exciting this is yes
Starting point is 00:56:18 this is where i was trying to get this is exciting but at the end of the day battles someone has to lose their job also okay good we got no we got no roster predictions out of steven adam well done you know what i'm fine with it i'm fine with guessing game it is a guessing game that's what i've been saying yeah and you didn't participate i i sure did i tried to put kneelander on his off hand here i'm gonna gino reda once taught me this um i don't know is not an acceptable answer thank you you gotta say i don't know let me find out for you oh that's good so jesse right now i don't know let me find out for uh for anybody wondering steve has a video to do in the next within the next two weeks it is his leaf season preview it'll be a solo one where he will
Starting point is 00:57:04 have all of the lines he predicts for opening night and all of that fun stuff and my alleged friends being like oh and he won't have any clown do it they won't have any of the pressure of me needling him all day to make up lines so that'll be coming out if you're looking for it back to school or back to s cool with xl gum i don't think that's how you're supposed to say it s dash cool is how it's written school back to school so listen if you search xl gum it's dash on spotify you will get some beats and that will help you study and do group projects and if you chew xl gum of course you won't be the person in your group with bad breath which is i don't know what it is with group projects but always somebody has that yeah okay there captain tonsil stones
Starting point is 00:57:48 How about you chew on a little piece of that gum? What? You lost it there, right? I did. Yeah. Wow. I'm sad. He hasn't had his XL gum this morning.
Starting point is 00:58:03 That's sure. He sure hasn't. And you can turn stress into confidence, which is the exact opposite of what Steve just did. He turned confidence into stress if you search XL gum on Spotify right now. so tap in not only will you conquer the school year with perfect beats but one dollar from every stream will go to pathways to education a national charity helping students in low-income communities overcome barriers to education and hey that person you're studying with they might appreciate a little chew of xl gum too uh we're gonna make steve chew a few enjoy your gum all right last
Starting point is 00:58:37 question if it's the last piece of gum in your pack somebody asks you for a piece of gum do you give it to them no kick them in the chest no wow meanies two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire, and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Starting point is 00:59:22 You gotta try breakfast at A&W. And what better way than with a delicious Pret Organic coffee? Starting at just $1 all day, every day, now until December 31st. Jesse, I think we need to graduate the topic to NHL Car Watch, which continues the entire season. The next one is a Toronto Maple Leaf. Now, we talked about Tim Stutzla and his Porsche Germany partnership. The Porsche he got in Germany, which is thick.
Starting point is 01:00:02 That's right. And he doesn't have to import the parts. Good for him. Yeah, you were very worried about that. No, it's expensive with German cars. Anybody that owns a German car, you know. But here we go. Guy who had sex at least once.
Starting point is 01:00:14 It's Morgan Rielly in a Mercedes. Congrats on the sex. Congrats on the sex, Morgan. And I think I know. Is that Mercedes? It's the SUV Mercedes. Well, he's a dad now. He's got to have the SUV.
Starting point is 01:00:25 Yeah. So it looks like this off season because he just posted this a day ago. Oh, I think I see Adam Mott's picture there. He liked this. I sure did. He got the SUV Mercedes at Mercedes Benz in Toronto. There you go. Congrats to Morgan.
Starting point is 01:00:38 This is our NHL player, Car Watch. Very nice interior. I think if you see cars come up, make sure to send them to Jesse or I. NHL Car Watch continues. They gave him the hat from, you know, when the dealer has the hat. They gave him the hat for the picture. He was wearing the Mercedes Benz hat. That's nice.
Starting point is 01:00:54 Dude, Riley, I think, is in the peak of his life right now. I feel like he was born a dad, and he just became one. Oh, this is his peak. Yeah, you're right. He's going to settle in great. yeah that's a that's a guy who look he's already got like the lean that's a guy who likes to look at the lawn that's a guy who likes the barbecue has he got one button undone or two is he getting a little saucy with us no it's just the golf shirt with the uh it's a very relaxed golf shirt
Starting point is 01:01:19 there margan one button a little hair coming out of there just got a hulking chest adam is i like uh i like black uh mercedes black mercedes feels feels nice they're very cool his calves are about to double in size for no reason he's that's a dad this is this car is very similar to a car that adam's daughter has that's right yes oh yeah jesse bought that jesse bought the uh the remote control version of that car it's an what is it e8 e63 or whatever they're called i don't know um and uh and yeah and she's terrified of it she still will not get into it uh leo is not and tears down the friggin' street. Oh, that's great.
Starting point is 01:01:57 Hey, nice. All right, now, here's the other thing I want to say. The Leafs did their first photo shoot, and Jesse, I'm going to send this out to you.
Starting point is 01:02:03 Finally, a Leafs topic. With Austin Matthews as captain. And I just want to know if you believe this picture goes as hard as I believe it does. I've been waiting
Starting point is 01:02:13 for this moment for a while. I think Austin should be captain. Let me see. I'm very excited about it, and I think it looks pretty damn cool. Yeah, you get it. Let me see.
Starting point is 01:02:21 So this is Austin Matthews as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. That's a good picture. That's a better picture. How about that picture? Matty, take our shot down for a second. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:32 Does that not go hard? Who cares who plays left wing? That's your captain. Here, wait. Go to the... Not that one. Him at the side. That's such a good computer background.
Starting point is 01:02:45 You put all your icons on the right side. And then you were just fueled by the stoicism, but the intensity of i'm hot and bothered right now every day that passes every day that we get closer to the hockey season i am less able to sit still it's exciting and this has me ready to act can i just say something i've noticed you just did i just noticed that uh uh maybe this is kind of stupid but like the show is what i'm about to tell you oh okay okay so austin matthews has a three in his number john tavarez had a nine divisible by three dion fenuf was number three matt sundin 13 i'm gonna kick your ass doug gilmore 93 this sucks
Starting point is 01:03:31 a lot what was rick vive wait who was before wendell oh and 17 ah stupid but thanks wendell want to throw something out there yeah but you don't correct wendell no you don't it's scary wendell was right i've shaken hands with him he's the nicest man he's okay he is the literally the nicest man but you're acutely aware of this photo was taken at nhl media day in las vegas i don't know is it in henderson henderson is i assume did they go henderson again in henderson vegas nevada is where it was taken um and last episode i said you asked me about the nhl media day and who's going to represent and i was like i don't have i don't know who but in the last 48 hours i've obtained the list of the players who are representing each team at nhl media we run through
Starting point is 01:04:15 it and guess and i think it'd be fun if we if i gave you the team name and you guessed we can actually maddie you want to keep score but who will play left wing for the leafs okay the leafs representative is pontus home obviously it's austin matthews obviously it's austin matthews he can't play left wing yeah so we we saw austin that's matthews uh austin for the leafs that's a free square uh-huh okay maddie you ready with the tally oh yeah all right fired up leafs man matthews one one got it colorado steve who's your guess nate nate both get it correct i saw a quote from nate so that's how i knew edmonton yeah you've probably seen some honor connor you told us leon dry sidle oh you did tell us you know what got me is the connor mcdavid
Starting point is 01:05:03 edmonton's easy living quote from yesterday don't listen to steve when he jumps to conclusion good point um anaheim the mhl anaheim uh i told you this one too gudas yeah is it future captain radco gudas yeah and we're gonna get to some of the ones that i haven't you haven't told i didn't mention yesterday because i didn't know we'd do trivia um blackhawks bedard gotta be bedard bedard is correct if it's not i'm gonna be like blackhawks you're an idiot yeah fire your franchise flyers oh you told me you told us this didn't you connect i don't know if i mentioned this one i said it was no oh and tip it oh and tip it yep oh and tip it is correct i did i yeah
Starting point is 01:05:49 i should have blabbed about the list uh rangers uh true but be funny um captain hold on i think it's got to be like mika i think i think mika or adam fox i'm gonna go mika because he's cool you guys are going the same answer again okay fine adam fox no it's trochek oh i love trochek why jets we know perfetti perfetti oh yeah perfetti islanders sometimes i forget who plays for them i know anders lee does not anymore uh you guys have given the same answer the entire thing barzal well because he's done it before yeah so who's your guess uh who else plays there sorokin yeah i don't think it's going to be
Starting point is 01:06:39 one of the russian goalies i think it's going to be yeah barzal makes the most sense go with him barzal both bo horvat son of a gun that makes sense he's good in front of a camera flames um mackenzie wieger cadre mackenzie wieger finally carolina hurricane steve you better step it up carolina hurricane who plays there yeah who's left jacob slavin seth jarvis jacob slavin oh come on adam's up too okay i don't need all my salary columbus blue jackets columbus blue jackets that's a good question boone jenner sean monaghan zach warensky fuck all right dallas stars dallas stars have two representatives apparently no oh annoying yeah so if you try to get them
Starting point is 01:07:32 both if you give me either one i'll give you a point okay so just one guess yeah one guess either one wyatt johnston uh tyler sagan wyatt johnston and rupe hints oh there you go maybe I think I got the list when it was finalizing. Maybe one of the two was going. Florida Panthers. So Steve got a point back. Adam's up by one. Steven Lorenz.
Starting point is 01:07:54 It should be Matthew Kachaka. It should be. But they don't make the same guy go every year. And I talked to him a couple years ago. Okay. Aaron Eckblad. Adam. Sam Bennett.
Starting point is 01:08:08 Sam Reinhardt. Coming off that big season. All those goals. Got a new contract. yeah we worked with sam reinhardt at the pepsi thing at all-star game that was really cool he was a very nice guy yeah sam reinhardt yeah no adam got to interview him he was wearing a nice shacket kings mark bergevin uh no uh joel edmondson just for shits and giggles who's your guess no real guess quentin by yeah i would him or or um drew dowdy pick one drew

Starting point is 01:09:40 oh because he just got traded so that feels like you got to make a stamp charlie lingren charlie i think that was not a bad game no i think that would have been good to send learn because he had that great end of the season he was a large reason they got in the playoffs and all that fun stuff but they sent ovi oh yeah ovi is their that's great ovi's awesome yeah so good he's gonna break russie's record like he needs to get out there and talk to you know um i think it's a big deal for the nhl and you make the call to the caps like hey we need can you send them yeah yeah oh uh we know ottawa is we talked about the last episode we did but oh uh shane pinto well there you go with the mustache oh you might have seen this kaylor
Starting point is 01:10:24 Yamamoto who they signed to a PTO today I'm kidding um Lawson Krause I'm gonna say uh uh oh it so they had a they had Dersey who signed they had uh um Sorgachev who was traded over and signed Lawson Krause I don't know Dersey oh Sorgachev's a good guess Clayton Keller oh okay really yeah interesting I would have been like why is that interesting it's interesting to people like remember how i talked about some players they show up and you can tell they hate it i saw him a couple years ago i was like they shouldn't make him be here oh shit really it wasn't a bad attitude thing it was just i could tell it was an infliction on him yeah he didn't really like it or maybe it was just like he was standing around but that's fun yeah that's funny
Starting point is 01:11:13 that's a good no no i'm not saying anything about him he's a very underrated player i think uh steve hates Clayton Cohen no I badly want him to be a leap Montreal it's Nick Suzuki's a terrible quote but I he's the captain unless he's the captain oh no it wouldn't be cool it's not going to be lion a because because he was in Columbus this week was he not um oh the Habs are tough Lane hudson i don't know oh but he's not he's not earned a job yet right i mean he's going to play david savard uh who's your guy brendan gallagher slough i'm gonna say nick suzuki nick suzuki is correct well done yeah i'm not a bad guy this is a terrible quote tavaris is a terrible quote like it's not a shot at him yeah canucks oh man habs twitter's gonna be all over you again
Starting point is 01:12:11 he's a terrible quote um Canucks Canucks okay well the funniest would be like Jake DeBrusque because he just got there and he's doing all these interviews and he's doing a good job of like endearing himself to Canucks fans I think he's he's a good one Quinn Hughes because he's an awesome quote Adam who's your guess uh I don't actually know so I'll say Jake DeBrusque and Quinn Hughes oh he's a good quote Devils
Starting point is 01:12:37 Jack I hope Jack Jack he's coming off an injury too you gotta have so yeah Canucks and Devils sending the Hughes brothers
Starting point is 01:12:44 Boston running out of teams here who did they get they got Zdorov let's go Zdorov oh Big Z he's a good quote good answer
Starting point is 01:12:53 shoot it's probably wrong but I don't think it's Bard unless Bard though is going for a thousand points this year
Starting point is 01:13:01 and it's achievable they're gonna be difficult mcavoy jeremy swayman really yeah yeah i think it's interesting that's extremely interesting now pay me 10 million um maddie what's the tally uh 12 12 11 for adam 12 11 so adam's up by one yeah okay all right a couple more tampa bay uh Gensel Gensel makes the most sense oh it could be Hedman um but Hedman was just named captain so I'm gonna go Hedman Victor Hedman Adam's up by two Steve oh that's all right Buffalo Peyton Krebs no I'm kidding um Mark Giordano that's for you to say I know that's what's for saving his pants um uh Tage because he's coming
Starting point is 01:13:52 off an injury and he's going to try to get back to 40 goal form i say tage steve it's i'm gonna go with oh uh doleen doleen's correct oh we're getting close here nashville well stamkos makes a lot of sense that's so juicy this is the last one it better be stamkos you need to answer something different than adam to give yourself a chance to win oh shit well what did he say stamkos i'm saying stamkos you're picking stamkos i am gonna pick steve you need to pick something different so you can like an opportunity like you gotta think forsberg's there who else they got they got uh here's what's great philip forsberg that's your answer yeah i think he was there why is that great because you told us last show i was wondering if you'd remember
Starting point is 01:14:37 that is correct that was great did we tie in the high ball game did we tie yeah yeah tie i don't know how do we tie at 13s like we didn't know because they got a bunch wrong oh yeah so does Not every team has a rep. No, I named every team. Not Seattle. What did I miss? I don't have Seattle. So I just don't know who they're sending.
Starting point is 01:15:02 They got nine wrong. Anyways, that's the list of teams I have. I don't have Seattle yet. So there you go. Maybe that'll be the tiebreaker. What about Utah? We did Utah, Clayton Keller. Speaking of Seattle, Adam Larson signs a gigantic extension.
Starting point is 01:15:20 to be more of what he does. If your kid shoots right, you need to brainwash them. Absolutely. You're not allowed to play forward. You're not allowed to be a forward. Now, I know Jesse's been very excited about this. Michael Russo.
Starting point is 01:15:34 I am, actually. Michael Russo, who's really great. Like, he has some... My favorite Michael Russo article of all time is the Paul Fenton takedown after he was fired as GM of Minnesota. If you've never read it, you must. It's wild.
Starting point is 01:15:50 minnesota but uh this is a good one and it's with bill daly uh charisma embodied uh bill daly thankfully it's print so you don't have to watch it because bill's not the most exciting guy but they go through everything from neck guards to expansion to salary deferral to playoff cap situations and jesse you have read this fully yes it's there's a lot of stuff in there to be angry about okay jesse came in this it doesn't happen as often as you might think like it's i'm like we need to talk about this and adam will be like jesse very rarely goes i read this and it pissed me off some particular quotes in there i think if you read into it a little it shows you just like they're still moving backwards and sideways yeah and before we get too far from what we just did
Starting point is 01:16:45 The other team I didn't have in there, Pittsburgh. Oh, it's Crosby. Yeah, Crosby's going for there. And I know I saw the quotes and stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Pittsburgh fans, I assume you're yelling at the screen. Well, I mean, he's saying that the extension talks have gone well and there's no issues.
Starting point is 01:16:59 I'm like, okay, well, then why haven't you guys made it? All right. Sign it then. Sign it. The NHL. Oh, yeah, no, my girlfriend goes to another school. That's mean. That is so bang on the money.
Starting point is 01:17:12 Yo, if the extension talks were easy, then get it done in a day. Bill Daly, though. Where is the NHL on expansion? This is the first one, okay? So he said, I wouldn't say we're in the expansion process. I wouldn't even say expansion is a priority. But what I would say is that our expansions in Vegas and Seattle were done separately and have both been very successful. I think it spurred a lot of interest in North America about potential ownership groups.
Starting point is 01:17:39 We have seven teams in Canada, 22 in the U.S. How he's answering the question is insufferable. We have three teams in the New York market, two in the L.A. market. So that means... Wait, are you serious? We're at 22 U.S. markets when other professional sports leagues are basically 30 or 31. So that means there's market availability, which I think helps. That is what I've been saying, by the way.
Starting point is 01:17:59 There's going to be 36 NHL teams. You all think I'm crazy. Now, what he did say is skill development and hockey development throughout the world, not just North America, has increased to a point where I think we have plenty of players where the NHL wouldn't be diluted in talent. And I agree with him on that, too. You look at the emergence of teams like Team Germany and the U18s and some of the other ones.
Starting point is 01:18:20 Denmark. And so I don't think we have the kind of talent delusion ceiling either, at least imminently. So what he said was, we're not in the process, but people are interested. Okay. And he thinks they have the talent. That's right.
Starting point is 01:18:33 Good stuff. You could have said that in fewer words, but fine. Yeah. This is a little like reading a Lou Lamorello interview. where I was thinking that says a bunch of stuff you don't get any you don't take any steps forward besides potentially going back to Atlanta this is Russo there's a lot of belief that you'll go back to Arizona how does the auction for land to build a potential new arena being canceled slow things down is there a plan to build a new arena so we went from a neutral topic to one that I think no
Starting point is 01:18:59 I'm getting up no no no no no that's that's over now yeah now it's done it's over you're out that the war's over steve we won fine um the canadian media won that's right because we were fighting the war finally bullied arizona out of their hockey we wanted them to leave all these years my boot feels so comfortable on the neck of the little guy the one thing as a member of the canadian media 400 million of them 40 million of us you can see why we're on top yeah um i don't think he said i don't think it slows down potential expansion process because i think the process is kind of the same as when alex barello uh would have had to deal with anyway he said having said that it is a gating factor to going back to the market until we have definitive
Starting point is 01:19:48 plans which i think stevie would like and progress so they need to be building a state-of-the-art arena because right now that market doesn't have one that can house a hockey team whether that involves a renovation of an existing arena sun sun suns i suppose that's always possible i would say if you're writing uh on a kind of clean slate you'd love to have a hockey specific arena that's designed for hockey or is predominantly hockey so we'll see how that plays out look gary betman and i like to joke that we spent 20 years trying to preserve hockey in arizona do they like to joke about it i don't i don't think so and ultimately we were unsuccessful with this iteration doesn't mean the next one won't be success good stuff thumbs up sure that's what you should be saying
Starting point is 01:20:29 you want hockey back in arizona once they get an arena it's gonna happen cool we all want hockey back in arizona we just didn't like the ownership groups we didn't like the bear away group we didn't like the morello group you playing in a college campus like yeah it wasn't cool yeah is that fair that's fair um here okay now we get to the spicy oh you should adam's jesse you have the quote up in front of you uh yeah yeah what about it give us the league's perspective on the carolina Hurricane's deferred salaries with Slavin and Jarvis. Did that come across your desk, Bill Daley? Bill Daley responded. He said, oh, yeah, it came across my desk. I'm not going to go into the merits of deferred comp. I will say that deferred comp is specifically contemplated in the CBA
Starting point is 01:21:12 and called for in the CBA that contracts can be structured this way. There are some things about the cap system that caused some interpretation to have to happen, which we shared with Carolina in advance we shared with the union in advance how we were to interpreting the provisions i'm not saying that i think deferred comp is the greatest mechanism in a system like we have and maybe in the future might be addressed in collective bargaining but we're midterm now so we kind of are where we are and then russo asked the league doesn't love the idea and he says yeah it throws out of whack some of the other checks and balances we have in the cba which forces interpretations in terms of how we allow it and what's permissible and what's not permissible.
Starting point is 01:21:54 The original deferred comp rules were developed in a non-cap world as opposed to in the cap world, so they kind of were inherited. And so they probably need adjustment on some basis going forward. Nah, that answer sucks ass. So Bill Daly there is being asked, does the league like when teams exercise a right to them within the CBA and GMs get creative and defer this compensation? yeah and it ain't Don Waddell and he's it's it's the new guy and it's Eric Tulsky and it's free
Starting point is 01:22:26 rain to talk shit and there we have the mouse mouthpiece for the entire league and how they are feeling saying no we don't like this creative thing that happened this summer that got a whole bunch of people talking about it it was like must listen to the CJ show the day after that happened he came on he explained it to everybody it was fascinating stuff and the NHL sat there and were like no we don't like this we want gms to work within our structure reminder the carolina hurricanes just hired tyler dello who's the guy who broke that whole email controversy with the nhl and the likes of uh i believe bill daly was involved and colin campbell um what's the uh rigging hockey and he goes on to because he's asked like is it going to be cap circumvention
Starting point is 01:23:14 And he goes on to say, yeah, that's a long term big picture fear, I suppose. So he's directly saying that even though this is allowed in the CBA, the NHL head offices might look at this as GM's exercising cap circumvention and breaking the rules. What I find funny about this, I find funny about this is that the whole argument of we need to protect small market teams falls apart when he says that. because the whole thing the whole thing that you've been sold which is bullshit by the way about this salary cap and why it's so hard is that well we got to protect the small market teams i see people in my dms going you're an idiot i can't believe you don't take the nhl at its word on this when do i take the nhl at its word on anything and and when a small market team defers salary to make things easier for itself the nhl goes well that could be cap circumvention
Starting point is 01:24:09 the cap is not there to protect small market teams kids if it was he wouldn't have an issue with it adam there's an ownership executive in the nhl yeah who's at the head of it uh i believe jeremy jacobs and the words family jeremy jacobs with the boston bruins they did they did this they did this and it led to the best regular season in nhl history and no one batted an eye i don't remember it being called caps or convention um and if it was i it was as much caps or convention as this is they signed patrice bergeron to a contract they did this david crachy too but bergeron's was the most egregious if i remember correct he was making very little money by nhl standards and he had a bonus of something like he gets like half his
Starting point is 01:25:07 contract if he plays 10 games or something like that well he didn't play 10 games he played several times that because he was never only gonna play 10 games and so oh that added to the Bruins cap hit it added to the Bruins cap hit but it was specifically designed to allow them to get away with it that season and have it go into overage so that it would go against their cap for next season because they felt, rightfully, they had a really good shot at the Cup that year.
Starting point is 01:25:44 They did. They won 65 games and they blew a 3-1 lead and lost to Florida in overtime. But that's what happened. Half of the team's centers that year were on contracts that went into the next season by design so they deferred cap hits yep they deferred cap it to the next season and the result was a 65 win team and where was the uproar bill
Starting point is 01:26:15 so just for where was the uproar jared didn't pick up the phone for actual numbers for actual numbers that year after they signed bergeron to his contract which was 2.5 million dollars for that season yeah cap it they had 1.3 million dollars left in cap space and then they gave him a 2.5 million dollar uh signing boat or bonus performance performance bonus and the performance bonuses don't count towards your cap for this season so they signed into a 5 million dollar contract and they only had to pay 2.5 of it against the cap that season and if they had tried to do the full 5 million they would have been over the cap by what is that 3.7 million how's that not identical and they also the creche deal was i think one and one so it was like one
Starting point is 01:26:55 million plus one million performance bonus so even more over the cap they literally circumvented the cap here's the difference the the only but it's in the rule yes and so is salary deferral yes i'm not complaining about it no i know you guys are not complaining about it bill making an issue it's in your rules bill you're the lawyer bill it's not bill you went to law school bill sorry no it's within the rules like it's not like i'm saying caps are mentioned like it's Yeah, it's literally, but it's legal cap circumvention, which so is the deferring of the salary. So the fact that the NHL is sitting there right now being like, we don't like this. Like, that's so snooty.
Starting point is 01:27:34 Let's put the hammer down on the Carolina Hurricanes. Yeah. Team who's not like my personal friend or boss did it, so I have a problem with it. Like, the big difference is, yes, Jarvis's cap hit is getting decreased over a long period of time. And sure, that's relevant. But the Bruins did it with two players. And it's not just that they did it. The Oilers did it, too.
Starting point is 01:27:58 They did it. I know. Oh, I know. I know. Just wait. And Adam, what did that result in? They went to the Cup. They went to Game 7 of the Cup Final.
Starting point is 01:28:07 So teams in recent memory that have done this have done it, gotten away with it, and had success with it. The Bruins did it and won 65 games. The Oilers did it and went to the Cup Final. and now the hurricanes do it and geez don't don't mess around and have me rooting for them to win the cup bill do you think at his pre-season media availability in 2022 he was asked about bergeron signing bonuses no or performance bonuses like no that's not no because it's very clearly in the rules and everybody knew about it because nobody knew about salary yeah now we get this
Starting point is 01:28:43 obscure thing in the cba and he's like well that's a holdover from we don't have the cap and now we do have a cap so we gotta fix that then take it out come on take it out in the cba negotiations in 2020 so that's their end goal here is to negotiate that out of the cba right well come on i i also jeremy jacobs calmly explained why it's not a problem to me so it's not a problem stop stop stop i you know i i i love i love that conversation um so it's the same thing uh they talked about neck guards and the ahl has mandated them and basically bill says a bunch of stuff um he said we did propose a mandatory rule but we clearly understand where the union is coming from uh and some of the difficulties they have with what it constitutes it's a process uh and then so
Starting point is 01:29:30 the the direct question is asked if an ahl player is called up can they take off their neck guard the answer is yes yeah and listen man whatever that's your prerogative whatever that's the union's prerogative whatever i guess i guess the good news to be gleaned um not from bill's quotes at all rarely is but uh the the good news is last year a bunch of players of their own volition were just like i'm gonna wear one yeah there you go good yeah uh on the upcoming cba talks now only two seasons away kids uh certainly there are things we don't agree on and there are things that we're going to want to visit in revisit in the next cba negotiations and they're going to resist and probably vice versa like it's always good to start off a negotiation with you know what we disagree
Starting point is 01:30:17 on a lot of stuff well i think i i think they yeah he said but but i don't see any of the contentiousness i've seen in the past particularly heading to 0405 and 1213 yeah there's bill cooking with oil i think we all had strong headwinds going into those this one is my favorite though jesse i will read the question read the first sentence and the first sentence sentence only okay i'm michael russo jesse is bald guy we haven't signed the final documents oh sorry full steam ahead on the 2026 olympics oh no jesse i'm just looking for where that quote is full steam oh no go ahead do you see my head on the 2026 olympics we haven't signed the final documents but we're supposed to get together with the IOC and the double IHF around our
Starting point is 01:31:06 global series games. Oh, he said, certainly from the NHL's perspective, I don't see any real gating. It's his new word, gating issues from finalizing those documents. There may be more significant issues on the player side,
Starting point is 01:31:18 but I'll let them address that. And Rusev had a good note on there and what actually is the holdup. Yeah. So he said, speaking on a condition of anonymity, somebody in the NHLPA said the outstanding issue is travel and accommodations, but that should be rectified October 4th and 5th
Starting point is 01:31:32 at the Global Games in Pragui. Prague. Oh, okay, okay. You, oh, Adam, you got me worried there. Yeah, yeah. You got me worried.
Starting point is 01:31:41 I thought they were taking it away. What does the World Cup calendar look like after the Four Nations? Who's the cheeky Pete who asked that one? We're 100% committed to doing it
Starting point is 01:31:52 in the February time period. So, in part, that's why we're doing the Four Nations Cup the way we're doing it. We have wanted to get the leagues and the European clubs and federations early to let them know that we're focused on and committed to doing it. There continue to be some organizations in Europe who are resisting it, but I think at the end of the day, we have enough time to make it happen. I think most players who play in Europe would be good enough to make a World Cup team and would be good enough to make a World Cup team will have the ability to individually protect themselves contractually and be able to participate.
Starting point is 01:32:27 because the idea here is let's say i play for moto and i go play for sweden uh because they can't fill out a team with nhlers although they probably could uh and i get a knee injury the the the club that holds my contract could void my deal currently um so uh he said we're gonna have the 26 olympics the 28 world cup the 30 olympics the 32 world cup which is pretty cool great which is how it always should have been the last decade of hockey fuck yeah best on best every two years our cup runneth over how many teams god how many teams they say traditionally they've had eight teams and they'll have a qualifying tournament for the two final of the eight teams um much like we saw this summer where latvia and i think denmark got in uh denmark got
Starting point is 01:33:12 into the olympics uh it was a big deal yeah denmark did um so they talk a little bit about uh russia um but really i i i don't really care too too much about that what i want to talk about is Ovechkin yeah because the Russia stuff is the same it's not up to the NHL it's up to the IOC yeah and the the NHL just follow the lead on the IOC's um mandate for if Russia's team sports will be allowed yeah so we'll see Ovechkin is 42 this is a question Ovechkin is 42 goals from passing Wayne Gretzky for the all-time goals mark what does it mean for the league to have a Russian player potentially have this happen this year he said it's on it's on the top of our list in terms of potential events that we want to promote
Starting point is 01:33:55 and make sure it doesn't slip under the radar screen. And some people have kind of suggested that because Alex is Russian, that somehow should be marginalized in some way. We couldn't disagree more with that. He's been a terrific ambassador for our game for 20 years now, and his enthusiasm for the game
Starting point is 01:34:08 and passion for the game is infectious. He's done a lot to lift the tide for the league and for the players during that tenure. Okay. We agree with Bill Daly. I mean, I think it sucks and it's shitty that Ovechkin's Instagram profile pick is him with Putin.
Starting point is 01:34:25 Mm-hmm. But you might... A warring, murderous dictator. I think it sucks. Yeah, it sucks. But if your family was over there, you might be worried too. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:34:35 We've had this conversation many times over the years. Yeah. It's impossible to know. Still no revealing injuries despite the uptick in gambling. Because obviously, in football, basketball stuff,
Starting point is 01:34:46 they have to reveal that stuff because there's a lot of money on the line. And the NHL is officially partnered with gambling companies i don't think it'll change certainly in the near future we've received no pushback at all from any of the sportsbook entities uh on our current injury reporting practices our general managers are very vested in the current state of affairs so from my perspective no reason to change the rule i feel like this is the one that if you're like just a fan of hockey you might not understand but like injury designation is a very important thing in the
Starting point is 01:35:15 nfl world yeah where you have to and there's actually controversy happened this past weekend with Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers and them potentially not revealing that he was going to be out for Monday night's game because the guy who replaced him on the field knew on Friday, he accidentally stepped up and said that he knew on Friday and you're supposed to tell the league and everybody
Starting point is 01:35:33 so we all know what happens in terms of the game on Monday. But there could be a future where the NHL has designation at a certain point on game time where it's like this guy's out with this injury. And that needs to be all written in the CBA and so it might come up in next negotiations so again i'm like not a huge nfl guy on friday
Starting point is 01:35:54 teams need to let you know so there's there's certain um for a monday night game yeah so there's no well no because christian mccaffrey they knew he's the backup was told on friday that he might be starting on monday but might be but mccaffrey was was uh designated as questionable on on friday when the practice reports came out so if they knew on friday that he wasn't gonna be playing on monday then he should have been marked as out and not questionable but there that's a little it sounds like it was questionable yeah it's a little in the weeds of whether he slipped up and they actually didn't but the way the nfl works is at certain parts of the week i think it's like there's a the tuesday designation like a wednesday one and then like uh and 90 minutes before kickoff
Starting point is 01:36:38 you have to declare what a player's status is yeah so going into every practice it's like is this guy questionable is he out for this practice on friday is is he questionable what injury and then it's like questionable with what so it's right questionable with a calf strain and then 90 minutes before kickoff you got to tell everybody is he playing or is he not playing and i think something like that where you don't throughout the week in the practices doesn't really work because there's 82 games you can't be doing that all the time 90 minutes but reasonable in terms of like four days playing i could see a world where it's like austin matthews out with hand injury has to happen you have to declare that 60 minutes before puck drop every night
Starting point is 01:37:18 well every night before a hockey game you got to declare 60 minutes before what injury has and why is this player going to play or not play so i think there's there's a world that that can exist even though there might be pushback from the players in that respect but it's something that happens in the biggest sport in north america that drives me nuts on stream nights because i'm trying to prepare for the stream trying to prepare i'm like where's the where's the lineup and like sometimes the stream's already started and i'm like oh okay here it is like i've been talking for five minutes trying to figure out who's where right and it makes so much sense in the nfl ecosystem just like how much fantasy and gambling drive nfl talk and coverage that like if you if
Starting point is 01:37:55 you play nfl fantasy you you want to know throughout the week and you're watching individual players and i feel like it maybe if the nhl had things like that around the game like maybe like you'll see an uptick in fantasy and maybe there'll be good things that come out of the game for that So I don't know. It's interesting. I just want to point out, in STPN Fantasy Football, 1-0. I'm 1-0 with the least amount of points out of any winner
Starting point is 01:38:20 because Cam Stewart left 75 points on the bench. I love that. There's no reason for you to be 1-0. No, I absolutely should not be. If people aren't aware, Steve missed the playoffs last year in a 10-team league where eight teams make the playoffs. He was one of two teams and missed the playoffs. I suck.
Starting point is 01:38:37 you know i didn't have a good week i'm not even gonna talk about it but i lost five of the first yeah but six well five of the first six games last year and i still finished third yeah and then you went on crazy winnings you went one like five in a row to get into the playoffs and everything it's all about the grind yeah but adam took his first two his first draft pick to do like a bit around travis kelsey well i was trying to get i was trying to lock down my tight ends and then i didn't realize that mark andrews is just going to be replaced so i'm like but like um mark Andrews just might have had a bad game where he just covered a lot. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:07 And the rain didn't help. Taking Kelsey Lewis, you took him like fourth overall. Third. That's even worse. Yeah, you shouldn't just do a bit for your first pick. Third overall pick is Kirsten Art League. I did Josh Allen last year. Two in five Canadians will hear

Starting point is 01:40:03 And what better way than with a delicious Pratt Organic Coffee, starting at just $1 all day, every day, now until December 31st. You gotta try breakfast at A&W. At participating A&W locations in Ontario. Draft will still be decentralized in 2025. Okay. And he said it will be, there will be a host city, but it will be a smaller event. So even though the Vegas thing went really well, they said, let's move on from it. Which I didn't really understand.
Starting point is 01:40:33 I think probably because it's expensive and James Dolan doesn't make friends. So it was probably like, like Jeremy Jacobs was like, what's the bill on that? I need to sell that much ice cream? No way. I'm not doing it.
Starting point is 01:40:47 And that's why they moved to a decentralized draft anyway. They didn't want to fly that many people in. So they could do Vegas again in the sphere, but all the players are there, but the teams aren't there. It's kind of what you'd want. Yeah, or you'd have a rep from the team.
Starting point is 01:41:02 or i think it's better to just please don't let it be the commissioner like adam silver makes it work uh roger goodell makes it work gary betman does not make it work but have a representative from the league hand them the jersey take the picture move on right i or the i want to go to the party hours right four hours we're yeah he made it sound like we're getting a draft place yeah it's just nobody's gonna be there nothing's confirmed yeah it says it will be i would expect he said there's really no movement to change the direction from the decentralized draft and then there's the last part about johnny gaudreau and potentially renaming the lady bang trophy after him okay here's the answer anything done in that vein and that's not the first time i've heard that
Starting point is 01:41:42 suggestion with respect to some players and other all-time great players we would go to the general managers probably first and we would probably need board approval second so he's basically just running you through what it takes to change the name i don't think any of those ideas have been raised uh from time to time i would say they've been kicked around from time to time never really gained a whole lot of traction so i wouldn't want to handicap what the prospects of the change of a trophy's name would look like they have changed lester b pearson award used to be a thing now it's something else ted lindsey yeah i i said to jesse before the show started i'm like what's so hard about being like i think it's a great idea but let's defer to the gms well the gms are going
Starting point is 01:42:22 the gms are just like with the decentralized draft because when when that happened a lot of gms voted for decentralizing the draft and afterwards complained that they didn't want to and the reason for that uh is because their owner said here's how you're voting because i sign your checks and and so the so the owners what what the the gms are just a proxy right so oh we'll ask the gms no you're instead of just saying we're asked the owners but this is it's easier to put it on the gms because then the owners don't look bad the the owners don't care what an award's called 100 i got it yeah i also think uh the owners would probably tell the gms how to vote in certain cases on this as well also there's just no money involved other than the cost of making a trophy
Starting point is 01:43:07 different yeah it's fine yeah i don't know i don't know so interesting uh interesting stuff now uh the funeral for johnny and matthew gaudreau if you want uh an amazing rundown uh aaron portsline did an incredible rundown um of what happened obviously you know uh johnny's um wife meredith gave an incredible speech the uh the whole thing was apparently just overflowing with people she and i think the most tragic thing is obviously she revealed that she is pregnant not just matthew goudreau's wife but also johnny goudreau's wife pregnant um and uh you know speaking of the you know the renaming of the award i don't you know i don't have a um i don't know what the right way to honor johnny gaudreau is going to be but when we have things like you know the bill masterton
Starting point is 01:44:00 when we have things like the ted lindsey those are bill masterton created some you know touched people changed ted lindsey changed the game as well um johnny gaudreau clearly was one of the people that embodied and i said this before what we want hockey culture to become it's been under the microscope under the microscope for years for a good reason and this is the guy that you would be like if my kid bought his jersey i'd be thrilled over the moon um cole caulfield was probably one of those kids a hundred percent so i love by the way that cole caulfield is actively wearing 13 to honor him love it uh uh because i think that is i think that's more of a tribute than not wearing it do you know what i mean because i was worried a little bit that oh
Starting point is 01:44:49 well we're going to retire it around the league or something like that i understand the team's retiring it but i love when players pay tribute the way marner tried to with doug gilmore and then when he made the league the Leafs were like oh yeah we're retiring that now we've never done that in our history right before his first game and gilmore was like i'm happy with him wearing it was supposed to be a tribute to gilmore if i'd gotten to the league if i with my athletic building got into the league i would have worn 90 that's how the leafs used to do it is is players asked for permission and then yes and they were honored but it was never retired if that makes sense it was like that i want to say key on number 14 oh okay but no so yeah i mean just just from
Starting point is 01:45:26 this i think i would be doing a disservice to aaron port's line if i tried to recant his entire article um but there were some really beautiful moments there and he captured them beautifully and i think you know we've lost two really amazing people in the sport and it's a it's a real shame and we got a little lost from your point i think i think when you're saying like he embodied hockey and like that's what you want to put up on a pedestal yeah right like yeah whatever they choose to do to honor johnny goudreau it's never gonna be enough because it's somebody who never got to finish off his his dream of being an nhl player so let's do everything we can to honor this person who was exactly what we want out of the game of hockey and i think the lady bing being
Starting point is 01:46:10 named after him is personally i i was like man that's a great idea yeah why not yeah and then retire the number in calgary and columbus yeah yeah absolutely have it up in the rafters absolutely absolutely um uh you know moving on again difficult to do uh travis germant has signed a pto with the edmonton oilers tyson berry has signed a pto with the flames jared tenorti has also signed with the flames but he actually got a full contract um and it's interesting to see those two teams augment so i would say that both teams have similar defenses and completely um um tear like the the biggest difference in offense that you could possibly have oh my god they're both top heavy on defense a lot of talent at the top but you get past the
Starting point is 01:47:00 third or fourth defenseman and it's kind of scary dude i have the oilers pairings in front of me yep so like dermot has a way above zero chance of playing games for this team ekholm bouchard hot damn yeah great was that me that wasn't me no it was me sorry ekholm bouchard hot damn hot damn nurse emberson hey there's apparently a lot of good information out there that emberson might be better than you're giving credit for yeah but we're not there yet so kulak stetcher i mean they got stetcher at the deadline oh boy oh boy like dermot's making that team oh yeah uh but Dermott uh left-handed D who can play both sides listen he played over 50 games last year he had seven points like this isn't Travis Dermott who was the second round pick
Starting point is 01:47:53 full of potential from his time in Toronto but we saw the player that Connor Brown turned into he was brutal brutal and then he got better and better and better and better um and it's not just kyle dubas gms love their guys yep and it's but it's not just gms presidents and it's coaches jeff jackson had travis dermot as a client ah travis dermot had connor mcdavid and connor brown as teammates with erie and chris knoblock as his coach mcdavid had the best season of his life under knoblock and that's why the leafs drafted dermot and not connect me Adam, why are you going to... Wasn't that that draft?
Starting point is 01:48:43 That was that draft. Yes, it was. Why are you going to... McDavid and Dermott have played together since they were at least seven. I know that from their time in Newmarket. He's going to play games for this team. Is he going to be able to rekindle
Starting point is 01:49:04 that potential that he had? I don't know. But I think he's going to be good enough to play games and play well for this team? I have a suggestion, and it just popped into my head, gentlemen. Were I Stan Bowman and Jeff Jackson? Gratefully, I'm not.
Starting point is 01:49:20 But if I were them, and I was looking for, because I just traded my $3.25 million right shot defenseman, and I've got Ty Emberson penciled in, I would look around the league and go, where can I get a puck moving? don't you dare three million dollar you dare right shot defense whomst among us
Starting point is 01:49:44 with potential cap issues i might add lilligran was not an otter stop stop i'm not saying there's any rumors just saying it makes a lot of sense stop it just throwing that out there stop that right now uh uh next one here um uh did you see this this clip here uh roberto luongo oh i did roberto luongo apparently answered an ad to play with a beer league team in their championship and should we play it yeah let's play it here we go it's from uh bryce's hockey life on instagram i'm just credit them you'll be blown away by this i would have shit my pants you're right that was the most like they didn't even get up and were like hey thanks for coming
Starting point is 01:50:50 nothing and he's got all his panthers gear too yeah like get up and say hello to them I would shit my pants. Yeah. Anyway. Oh, and he's wearing the C. He's got the C on his pad from his... Yeah, when he was captain. Vancouver.
Starting point is 01:51:03 I forgot that ever happened. So I want to throw this out there. Roberto Luongo won them the championship. And there's a lot of people online who are going, that's cool, but should it count? Nah, he surrendered two goals. No, like they were going to pick up a goalie anyways. Like they didn't have a goalie.
Starting point is 01:51:20 Should it count? That's a little unfair. The Beer League should write into their CBA that you're not allowed to have future Hall of Famers. No, current Hall of Famers. My bad. Excuse me. You shouldn't have members of the Hockey Hall of Fame on your beer league team.
Starting point is 01:51:36 They didn't write that. No, it 100% counts. Because they were clearly they needed a goalie. What if the other guy they brought in was like, oh, I played triple A at some level. And he was also really good. You know? Yeah, it counts. Shut up. Oh yeah, I bet he was trying 100%.
Starting point is 01:51:51 But do they get a ring if they get fired? that's the that's the real question if they get fired do they get a ring that's a real good question you know we'll have to look into that we'll have to look into that now i will i want to say one quick thing here uh because i have i have a question for you guys maybe i save this for the press conference because i have a question no just go ahead we won't have time for we don't have time for so this is my question so i said that i couldn't you know i haven't found a hockey league to join for for fantasy sure i had two people reach out somebody named scott and somebody named nick separately from different leagues we can just make invite me into their leagues oh fun
Starting point is 01:52:29 and i have said yes to both of them so i'm going to join their fantasy leagues but my question is do you think i should live stream their fantasy drafts on the youtube channel and crowd basically crowdfund my choices oh because what i was thinking is like we can go through this together and hopefully pick an all-star team because clearly I didn't do very well with my NFL draft. I've never really done a hockey fantasy. It's been like five years since I've done one.
Starting point is 01:52:56 Should we, would that make compelling content? Does it deserve to interesting-o-meter? I'm going to make so many burners and give you the worst suggestions. You gave me some terrible suggestions and we did it at my house the last time. You're like, pick Eric Gustafson. He's going to go off.
Starting point is 01:53:10 It's crazy. What do you think, guys? I think that's a fantastic idea. Okay. Jesse? I think you're going to have a lot of fun. Will it be deserved to interesting-o-meter enough to make it to the YouTube channel?
Starting point is 01:53:22 Probably. Probably. Oh, Jesse's giving this a light, too. I can tell. I think anything you stream will be fun. Like, I don't think it has to be anything. I think whatever you're streaming, it'll be fun because it's fun content people tune in for.
Starting point is 01:53:34 Well, you know what? Maybe I'm just thinking about doing that. Because the streams are coming back this year. Not just for me, but for him, too. What? Yeah. Did you know that? Jesse, you can hit the extra.
Starting point is 01:53:43 We'll just leave him on that. By the way, Corson Clubhouse, get your tickets. St. Catharines, it's not a Friday. It's a Saturday. Hey.
Starting point is 01:53:49 Don't let anyone tell you it's a Friday. Also. That person would be stupid. Raising money for Easter Seals. Idiot. Stupid person. Raising money for Easter Seals.
Starting point is 01:53:57 There's a link for my team down in the description. If you make a donation to anyone on the team, you're eligible for Leafs tickets.
