and not be worried about it being completely out of date. I think if anything was going to happen, it would have happened already. No, I think five o'clock on a Friday is when I would announce that. That's normally when they do. Yeah, no, I wouldn't be shocked. Luckily, we got a stream tonight.

When you get closer to the border, you find a Denny's. By the way, so Americans don't know this. Oh, there are. The second you cross the border, the portions change drastically at Denny's. Everything goes up. So they don't have our small. Way wrong. In the U.S.

No. their um our medium is their small as a kid it blew my mind because we always used to go down to florida because we have cousins there in virginia and whenever we go down the portions just blew my mind the in niagara falls it's a bit of a mixed bag yeah because they get a lot of american tourists and depending on the restaurant you go to you have no idea holy shit like you just get the extra large cup isn't a cup that exists in canada no they don't manufacture that to make what fucking soda no and you can't bring it in your car one because the cup holder is not big enough and two like your suspension will friggin like your car will just

tilt so there is an a so here's okay here's the update here's the update on a and w and w is a fast food restaurant chain in canada franchised by a and w ford's food services canada the chain was originally part of the u.s based a and w franchise chain but was sold to unilever in 1972 and then bought by its management in 1995. It no longer has any corporate connection to A&W outside of Canada. So your A&W restaurant is going to be a whole lot different than ours

if you're in the States. So, but there are some. So it seems like they're out as an American company. It was an American company. And the funny thing is, is A&W here has branded themselves so well that you got us Canadians thinking that it's a Canadian company.

Right. And it is not. Well, I guess it is now, right? Yes. Okay. When that sale in 72 was to a Canadian company. There's approximately 1,000 restaurants worldwide, approximately 600 in the United States, but that's the American version of it.

The Canadian one is on its own, so that doesn't count the Canadian restaurants, and there's one in Singapore. This is like KitKat, because KitKat in the States is made by a different company than KitKat in Canada. If you get a KitKat in America, it's a different chocolate than the one in Canada. Interesting. I've been lied to. It's the same thing.

It sounds like the same thing with A&W. If you go to A&W in the States, it's a different A&W. They don't have the Mama Burger, Papa Burger thing. They've just got a... Oh, they do. No, they've got a Papa Burger, Bacon Double Cheeseburger, Original Bacon, and Cheeseburger and Hamburger. So they've got one Papa Burger, but that's it.

Also, their mascot for commercials is just kind of a man who's friendly. Yeah. That's in Canada. He's just a Canadian dude. He's a dad. In the United States, he's a big brown bear who drinks root beer. We have the bear, too. Do we have the bear?

The bear came into Virgin Radio one day. Oh, I remember that. I wasn't there. Everyone was being bored. Remember? I missed the A&W. He couldn't fit in the door. I'm not saying he took off his head because mascots can't do that.

But he might have had to remove the costume. The Virgin Radio studio is smaller than the room we're in right now. It's very tiny. I'll be honest. It's not the best studio. It's not. But great talent in there. And so the A&W root beer bear could not fit in the studio.

That is amazing. Adam's co-host, Jax, loves like furry things and cute things and giant bears and that sort of stuff. So she was having a ball with this mascot A&W bear. Yeah, and this poor man, it's like 8 in the morning and she's had 40 cups of coffee. And the poor mascot's just starting his day like, oh, this is great. Yeah. She always talks about, yeah, anyway. So A&W, how did we get into A&W?

We were talking about our live stream, what we ordered. Yeah, what to eat. Like, I think, I mean, A&W would be good. Pizza would be good. We could do Panago. Listen, if Panago would only come back to us. Maybe come back. We should have got a sponsor for this.

A food sponsor. I'll make some calls. We didn't think about it. You have six hours. You sprung this idea on us. 72 hours and we didn't have enough time. I only did it with my friends. So listen, I mean, we could do Panago for old times.

And I think, honestly, I would love for them to come back. I think that they do need to come back. I think you should tweet Panago and say, hey, guys, come back. But in the meantime, we'll figure out what to eat. There's lots of places in the thing. But I'm going to tell you this. The best burger that you can buy outside of like locally Burgers Priest in Toronto is Wendy's Junior Bacon Cheeseburger. Wow.

So I want to say this, and I don't know who owns the copyright on this, but if we play the audio from the Wurz Press Conference, it's owned by somebody. Somebody bought the copyright to that. Did you know that? I think it's them. Is it the Wurz family? I don't know.

It could probably be the Chicago Blackhawks because of their availability, like their event right so when we let's talk about it yeah well i was gonna say uh the cj show got demonetized because right and we will get demonetized for this too but i think it's kind of important yeah um which isn't like you are you're allowed to put up copyrighted material on youtube which is a very interesting thing because they allow that but you just can't make money off of it right so yeah it's there's certain things that give you a strike and other things where they're like okay we're just gonna take all the money yeah and that's fine yeah because i watch some like hockey channels and they just use full clips from games and everything but they just

and mark has uh mark's done a lot in his career i don't think mark's ever had a conversation like this ever back also and i think much of what happened to kyle beach stemmed from a a power imbalance between a coach and a player and the powerlessness of a player in that situation so what are the blackhawks doing what have the blackhawks done what will the blackhawks do to empower a player in a similar situation to make sure that doesn't happen again i'm going to answer the question at the end. I think the report speaks for itself. The people that were involved are no longer here. We're not looking back at 2010. We're looking forward. And we're not going to talk about 2010. I know. And I'm not either. And we're not going to talk about what happened.

We're moving forward. That is my answer. Now, what's your next question? I can pick up to what we are doing today. No, I don't know. That's none of your business. That's none of your business. What we're going to do today is our business. I don't think it's any of your business because I don't think it's any of your business. You don't work for the company. If someone in the company asks that question, we'll answer it. And I think it should get on to the next subject. We're not going to talk about Kyle Beach. okay so we're gonna leave it there for a second let me tell you who's speaking mark lazarus is the one asking the question he's the reporter covers the blackhawks for the athletic then you have danny wurtz and rocky wurtz danny is rocky's son danny wanted to answer that question rocky his father said i got this you want to talk about the blackhawks for a second well and i didn't notice this the first time i watched it danny is staring a laser beam through his father just a laser beam do we should we play the second clip before we i think i start no no i think we're going to start with this and i'll tell you why this first i want to break this one down because that will add on a hundred percent agree but i think steve you said you've been chomping

at the bit i don't want to get in the way here your initial thoughts when this came out what you say uh he's learned absolutely nothing anything he said was uh completely irrelevant completely undone completely phony he is unfit to lead he must immediately step down as ceo of the chicago black now for anybody that might say to you very few will but for anybody that might say to you well you caught him in a in a moment of ink or he was frustrated or he's had a stressful year all those things could be true tell me why he's unfit in your opinion to continue going uh we've all had our moments of anger um me as you know as well as everybody um chris johnston put it wonderfully on the cj show this was an unforced error he was not asked about 2010 he decided to go

off on 2010 because he is a rich man who is upset because he thought he purchased this problem away he thought with the settlement with chicago uh with kyle beach and with john doe too which they just just swept that under the rug didn't say anything didn't release anything cowards cowards cowards all of them he thought he purchased peace he thought he purchased freedom from this subject from this stain on the organization forever and he hasn't and it just so happened and i don't think mark lazarus even knew this it just so happened that three more lawsuits came out the next day so the chicago blackhawks are not done talking about 2010 they're actually rocky and down goes brown uh sean mackindoe made a great point for a team that wants to be done talking about

2010 it sure is strange that this week they went out and hired patrick sharp and marion hosa everything about the chicago blackhawks is tarnished everything about the 2010 championships legacy is tarnished people have been talking about stripping the championship i don't know about that i don't know if that's gonna you know it's gonna it's gonna punish innocent parties as well as guilty i don't think it'll i don't know if it'll undo any of the bad the punishment is the asterisk the there could be an asterisk no no i'm just saying it is there is whether it's official or not the the stain on the trophy is the punishment the asterisk exists on uh within all of us bingo that's what i mean it yeah it exists in the knowledge of this it exists in the

x's that you had to put through brad aldrich's name um the chicago blackhawks cannot purchase uh their freedom from this subject which rocky seems to think uh he's done and going forward there's no way anybody can trust anything he has to say uh anything ownership has to say um you know wayne gretzky on the tnt panel let me let me say let me just put this in perspective for you okay because you got to remember tnt and the nhl are new partners as are espn in the nhl and i can tell you from behind the scenes that the nhl are not easy to deal with as partners they like to get in and try to set content as in they like to they like to have the rumor is they like to have their fingers in who's hired where yep and the other rumor is and i know this isn't

a rumor but i i i never got the call directly so i can't substantiate it the other rumor is that if you print a story and you're a partner with them that's unflattering to them you will get a call from head office you will and they have to deal with that and so for tnt this i told you that to tell you this for tnt to come on immediately that evening and play the full press conference play both the mark lazarus clip and the next one we're going to play for you and then have wayne gretzky wayne flippin gretzky say if i was a parent i'd be worried about whether they were going to protect my kid or not yeah they're in on off they're a non-option they're a non-option until rocky wurtz is gone so you mentioned rick westhead and i'm again i'm bringing context to this and i want

i don't want to interrupt you but i want this john doe three among three potential plaintiffs weighing lawsuits against the blackhawks this came out a day after rocky wurtz had his outburst and I'm going to call it, it's an outburst, right? Tantrum? Tantrum. Let's go with tantrum. The former student, now in his 30s, and working in the hockey industry, said Brad Aldridge confided in him that he was gay

and told him Chicago helped Aldridge secure a job at Miami of Ohio University. John Doe III, Aldridge said that the Blackhawks recommended he work with the Miami of Ohio University because the school had already supported the You Can Play program established by Brendan Burke, Brian Burke's son. John Doe 3 said he was assaulted by Aldridge in October 2012.

He said Aldridge used his Stanley Cup ring, his Olympic silver medal, and name drop Blackhawks players for grooming purposes. When John Doe 3 tried to report the alleged assault, he says Miami U police told him they didn't have jurisdiction. So he contacted police in Oxford, Ohio.

An officer told him not to bother because the statute of limitations had expired. John Doe III said he had to fight to have his complaint documented. Other potential plaintiffs who have retained the same Chicago law firm are former Blackhawks assistant coach Paul Vincent and former Blackhawks player referred to as Black Ace One in a report by Jenner and Block. And then Rick Westhead said, based on DMs I've received today, I think it's important to repost this. And he said, since our interview with Kyle Beach, I've received hundreds of messages from abuse survivors. You are not alone.

And then he goes and he sends a link to sexual assault centers, crisis lines, and support centers. And I suppose we should have mentioned the trigger warning with the warts thing, although we're not going to get into too much of the details. If this has happened to you, please reach out in your local area and make sure you call these crisis lines. Now, when it comes to, guys, this particular instance, what's interesting here is people want instant justice on something like this.

Yep. And I hate to be the one to let you down, but I don't see it happening. And I'll tell you why. Instant justice in what regard? Well, a couple of people, A, step down as chairman. Yep. Because Rocky Wurtz is the chairman. Yep.

B, make him sell the club. Right. So the first thing I'm going to tell you is they're never going to make them sell the club. No. The NHL can't find good owners as it is. And I can tell you, business takes precedent over this. They are not selling the club.

Rocky Wirt stepping down as chairman, to me, makes a lot of sense. I've talked to people in the industry. They've all said, not sure how he survives this one. Yeah. He's still the owner, but not sure how he survives this one. That means the owner has to fire himself, essentially, in this situation. the the the problem that you have is danny wertz then would have to step in as chairman you would think right probably danny wertz did not on stage feel comfortable enough to step up stand up and

take his father's microphone away his own son doesn't feel comfortable standing up to him how does anyone else in the organization stand and and so when he said to that point in the in the uh in the in the answer well if anybody in the organization asked we'll tell them but we're not going to tell you mr sportsman it was sort of like who would ever ask you look at the way you're reacting this is your this happened under your watch and your organization no i wouldn't ask you shit i'm so fucking mad i'm so fucking mad yeah i think the power dynamic is one of the more interesting things about the clip because usually in this situations when somebody in your company comes out and does some has a mistake the person above them will issue their statement or

reprimand that employee but this is the top of the food chain like sorry i'm a little phlegmy from the oat milk and the coffee uh this is the top of the food chain there's nobody to reprimand rocky rocky words and um the way he shuts down dead to danny's credit uh mark lazarus was glowing about him in his uh his piece about this incident he said that danny came up to him right after this happened and said that we have done things to uh rectify the incident that happened in 2010 and we have things in place for that and i do want to talk to you about that at a later date but just we saw on stage how the company is run that stuff's never supposed to get out and it's out there now and we see that this is uh there's a tyrant at the top and what he says goes and nobody

else has a say and until that is rectified there's no way forward for the blackhawks until you fix that and it's it's crazy that he reacted in this way just in and of itself because this is the first time the blackhawks have ever taken a question on the cow beach incident ever and the The Jenner and Block report came out in October. Right. Months ago. Right. And since that moment, it came out, since the settlement, since everything that's happened,

they have never had a MIDI availability with this brass about what's happened. So you've had literally a year to prepare for one question. And that's what happened. And it was unprompted. The question was not about Kyle Beach. It was not about 2010. It was about the future. The future, by the way, which is Danny.

and the past is like well i have some thoughts on the future and he he rocky get the fuck out of the way stop ruining what your kid has built you'll remember the jenner and block report he barely said a word it was all danny that's the hope for blackhawks fans going forward and uh any member or prospective member of the blackhawks organization is danny wertz is going to be in charge one day and he's he's going to be in charge of the future but until the past gets out of the way and stops ruining his son's work the blackhawks are a non-option if you're trying to enter the national hockey league as a professional now the words family is one of the of one of the longest running owners i think the longest running owners in the league they're in the upper group right

And if you don't know this, here's how the NHL is run. There's 32 owners in the NHL and one commissioner who represents the owners. But there's a tiered level to this, as you can imagine. There's a boys club, and then there's a boys of boys club. And the boys of boys club might be five to eight teams. And listen, it's a pretty open secret. Jeremy Jacobs is about the biggest one, biggest name in that. The Wurtz family would be included in that.

Those are the people that keep Gary Bettman employed. So if you think that the commissioner is going to step up and go, sorry, owner, I'm commissioner now. Well, he won't be commissioner long. So don't expect that there's going to be any sort of anything today other than Gary might come out and say it was wrong and he shouldn't have done it. But that's only because he'll have permission for the Wurtz family

to say it was wrong and he shouldn't have done it. And if I'm Gary and I'm in that position, All I'm going to say is Rocky Wertz issued an apology, which he did. Not in front of a camera, just on text, like on a press relief. Well, they've apologized for that, and we're moving on. And just for context, I wanted to make sure this was correct. Rocky Wertz is the longest tenured owner in the National Hockey League. No one has owned an NHL franchise longer than him.

He purchased the Blackhawks in 1954. Guess how much the purchase price was? $500. $500. 1954 for the Chicago Blackhawk hockey team The Arena 2 $25 million

I'm going to say $500,000 $1 million And the second most Tenured owner, Jeremy Jacobs 1975 So here's the thing guys This is an organization that's won three cups in the last 15 years Which is astounding by any measure

This is an original six team This is the owner that's been around forever and ever and i believe wasn't it wasn't it the are we sure that it wasn't his rocky words his dad that purchased the team because yeah dollar bill works it's his dad who bought it's his dad yeah so this is the third generation now that's going to be ahead of this team his dad was so backwards so i'm not surprised rocky gets it from their blackhawks fans know this you couldn't watch a local blackhawks game into the late 90s because he thought it would stop people from going to the game and the person who rescued the franchise from that from his dad is rocky rocky rocky is

revered in chicago for many reasons for doing things uh for saving the franchise from his dad yes now he's turned into somebody who's destroying it or well yes i think at a certain point guys we're all gonna face this everybody everybody listening to this if you're listening to this trust me on this one day what's present will pass you by you will you will not be on the cutting edge of cool of of social like of social change of any of this for the rest of your life at a certain point you're gonna go oh shit i don't know about these young people okay what we're seeing now is rocky wurtz despite all the great things he did for the blackhawks on the business side and the cups and the players and the memories and all of those things is not equipped to operate

as chairman in this era danny wertz because he owns the team is gonna get a shot whether you think he deserves it or not they own the team danny wertz is the next guy now i want to read something to you because i think it's important if you don't mind sure so if you're chairman of of a team you're like above the ceo right your job i said he was ceo i was wrong no he's chairman chairman yeah you are your job is to run the board and to make sure that the ceo is the right person for the team and the ceo hires the president who hires the uh general manager hires the coach who and all the players whatever anybody who's watched succession yeah very passionate about these things 100%.

Love Succession. Now, what kind of chairman survives this? You've got three cups in the last 12 years. I said 15, but it's 12. Okay? Three cups in the last. You are one of the most storied franchises in the NHL, one of the most recognizable NHL logos in the world.

Whether or not people believe that should be changed, different matter. You can now go to a Blackhawks game for eight US dollars. Blackhawks fans are in full revolt. not only has the so so the the product on the ice has been terrible for about four years you have resolved two sexual assault allegations there could be three more here in the next few months yeah so sorry just to clarify that there's uh one lawsuit involving sexual assault one involving sexual harassment and paul vincent basically saying his career got railroaded by

the black hawk there it is yeah so you got to resolve all that like i said you can buy a ticket for eight us dollars i checked it beer at the united center eleven dollars for a small and 1250 for a large which means for three tickets you can buy two beers oh you're a blackhawks game oh you're one of those teams now on the economic side alone take all of the all the other shit that you've mentioned just let's just talk money since that's what these guys are good at no chairman survives that no non-owner executive survives that so already just that vacuum alone you should be gone uh and and all the other shit which is the bigger part of the iceberg let's be honest go back and watch the footage of rocky wurtz flipping out and only look at danny only

look at danny wurtz you're watching a man stare a laser beam through his father and you're watching a man watch millions upon millions of dollars being lit on fire as if by much of what happened to Kyle. Do we want to play Phil Thompson's question? It was exactly what you just pointed out.

Yes. About the tickets. I'm so fucking mad. Yes. I got so much. I'm glad Steve agrees. I have so much. I'm sorry. Anytime. Jump in whenever you want. Let's just let this play. We'll mystify here because

is during the general and block briefing, you guys talked about a change in culture and transparency and demonstrating the new culture and values that are going to protect players and protect the organization in the future. And it seems like the second that we asked a question about that, it's met with resistance. So I'm going to ask it again.

I answered it. I answered it. And I told you to get off the subject. We're not going to bring up the report. You read it? We're not asking about the report. I know you're talking about what the report was talking about. And I told you, we're moving on.

I think you're out of line to ask this line of questions. Why don't you ask about something else? Why don't you ask about the GM story? Why don't you do something else? Why don't you bring up old business? Some of the season ticket holders that I've talked to said that they're having trouble maintaining value on their resale because you know a lot of people is that fast i didn't realize you're in our ticket department department okay what i'm saying is like come on let's talk about all the negative stuff when i

talk about your paper and what and what the sports page looks like should i do that no these are dedicated you can't even get our elite sports rocky can i finish my can you pause for just a second what did you say there you can't even get a lead sports or something elite sports i'm not sure rocky can i finish my and what the sports page looks like should i do that no these are dedicated you can't even get our late scores i don't know what he said i'm not sure okay sorry late scores maybe that's what it is oh maybe maybe i don't know let's continue paper can't turn around fast enough because late scoring i don't know rocky can i finish my my question they say they want to uh hold on because they value the black hawks but they wanted to phrase

some of the costs you've seen that uh attendance has been dipping uh i want to ask why you think is dipping and what can they do to maintain their value so when they renew a package they can defray some of their costs that's a fair question yes it is so jamie can answer that yeah any fair question is to be answered by someone with a brain he has to step down you're a useless anvil on your organization rocky get the fuck out of there by the way danny wirtz tightened and loosened the cap on his water bottle no less than 30 times during that clip he's losing his mind inside of his skull because his life's work is to improve upon his father's team and his dad just lit money and

john doe 2's lawyer has withdrawn his lawsuit versus the blackhawks indicating a settlement has been reached presumably chicago which pledged to be a beacon for professionalism when settling Kyle Beach's case demanded a non-disclosure agreement covering both John Doe II and his lawyer. Third and final tweet, non-disclosure agreements remain highly controversial. Many organizations, including Hockey Canada,

ban abuse survivors from sharing financial terms of civil settlements, but don't stop them from sharing their stories if they choose to. So yeah, you can, you can, we won't let you talk about the money you made, not money you made, money you were rewarded so excuse me for speaking like that but we we will let you say what happened

and and i guess in this particular case this wasn't them trying to do the right thing this this wasn't reconciliation this was a purchase this was a transaction to them this is a number on a piece of paper they haven't learned a goddamn thing may they never sleep another night the rest of their lives fucking monsters monsters they would do this to people including john doe too who who hasn't been represented enough through all of this and now has no voice at all great job rocky and great job danny i have faith in the future right now you got a hell of a problem because i don't believe a thing your organization says I understand Mark Lazarus has his own relationship and opinion with both Wurtzes and that sort of thing.

And you mentioned it, Jesse, that in his article, he's complimentary of Danny Wurtz. But I do think if you're seeing something unravel like that, and Steve, you said watch him in the video, I am sort of surprised that he didn't tell him to stop. Because I'll tell you, it would have been embarrassing if he had to get up and tell his dad to stop. Dad sits down and his dad goes, no. Because you know that's what would happen. What, Danny? You didn't want to make a scene?

But the other side of that is what's more embarrassing is what happened. However, the good thing for all of us is we see it. It's out in the open, right? So from my perspective, the answer is pretty clear. And from your perspective, the answer is pretty clear, Steve, right? Fair? I don't know. Yeah, sure.

So the question is, what are the Blackhawks going to do about it? What is the NHL going to do about it? We'll find out this afternoon. And don't be surprised if it's nothing. Listen, it's a stain. We've had owners get on TV and diss entire fan bases. Look what happened in Ottawa. It's a stain that will not wash off the Chicago Blackhawks.

Every single one of them. listen um we found out a number of people in the blackhawks organization including players took part in the general block report there were also a number of players who didn't and the first question everyone had on their mind including myself was who didn't people talk about the players don't take away that championship don't take away that championship but what about the players every single player on that 2010 team i look at you differently because i wonder did you or didn't you the stain will never come off and expecting anything to be done like my expectation is that they just try and move on from it because gary bettman and his henchman uh bill daly like

total tire fire and sean was like mr dependable but yeah he's yeah but you recruited our goalie so oh yeah our goalie was so good trent ruled you gotta have a ringer in net yeah um so yeah and and we also have a brand new episode of noxian cax that's already out so um they're killing it too they are and you know what's been amazing again is the the outpouring so casey bellamy uh is sorry no genevieve lacasse is the next one right jen lacasse uh she was on yesterday it's too many or yeah it was fantastic episode it's awesome it's awesome so the the love and the outpouring of support has been amazing for that show.

And I'll tell you, some of the stuff from the Jonathan Huberdeau episode on Agent Provocateur was great. You know, we had no big deal going into the All-Star break. We have the NHL's first star All-Star Heart Trophy,

probably nominee and leading scorer over McDavid Dreisaitl. And last week or two weeks ago, you had the reigning Vesna winner. It's pretty cool. So what's cool about Jonathan Huberdeau, my favorite story on that episode is when he talks about,

because he's got a house in Florida, obviously. of course so he does the entire episode from his backyard and you're like and palm trees and you could see you could see you could see boats floating by in the background yeah so you see that you see that and but then he talks about and this is the best player sign he talks about how his dad likes to run around his backyard and chase the iguanas away and then he's like dad i don't know why you're doing that like they're just gonna come back but yeah you should you should absolutely check out the episode alan also has some amazing stuff off the top about cte and it resonated with a lot of people um i got a very personal message from somebody and i don't know if i can read it

so i'm not going to but i'm going to give you the cole's notes on it because it's very specific but this person has a member of their family who at a very young age is in a home like not 60 yet in a home living out the rest of their days and they don't have long because and the doctors don't know this yet because you have to be you have to have passed on before they can diagnose you with cte but they're pretty sure he's got ctv cte was a boxer oh and it's the story is is is unbelievable and heartbreaking and when we talk about cte another thing that gary doesn't like to do is and he's the last one the nfl has acknowledged everybody else acknowledged it gary's like ah no not the nhl now there have been somewhere in the neighborhood of like 250 to 300

players in the nfl who have passed on donated their brains to science and they have found i think cte in 80 plus percent of them in the nhl we've had 14 total that we know of that have passed their brains on to science 13 of them had cte now what's interesting about it is is alan talks about sub concussive blows to the head do you know what that is no so when you get a concussive blow to the head you have a concussion yes right yes that's a diagnosed concussion what about all the other times you get rattled but you don't have a concussion those are called subconcussive blows all those little bumps to the head you take all the time in a hockey game that aren't too painful but they're there and they're happening constantly they're now trying to examine

and finding out more about what those do to your brain because you can imagine it's like it's like if somebody shot a puck at your arm every day for 20 years you know you may not hurt you the first time or you may be able to recover but i think by year three or four you'd probably start to see some ill effects maybe some bone damage some brittleness that sort of thing think about it in the same way as your head and so i think alan had some really interesting stuff about that uh we always like to he and i like to talk for like 10 minutes before we bring the guest on just talk about things that whatever he's thinking about that week but i had never heard the concussion debate talked about that way and it's not really a debate it's the nhl refuses to fund or acknowledge

it if the nhl would acknowledge it and help fund research we might be able to prevent it well and the scary thing about your comparison is like with with muay thai for example they condition their shins by getting a series of micro fractures and they come back uh the bone regenerates and it's stronger your brain doesn't do that no your brain degenerates over time as you're getting hit yes yes it's as if your shin just never healed alan breaks it down perfectly and he compares it to alzheimer's disease when people have uh cte and it's fascinating to hear him talk about it because there's so much advancement in science that can be made if the initiative was taken by a league as big as the nhl to just get ahead of it and not even get

ahead of it just react to the problem that's happening right now and they're not doing that it's a shame it's you know what i have to tell you um it's it's gonna be one of like if you think this this concussion thing's going away it's not it's not it's it's it's gonna get worse it's gonna get way way worse so the sooner we figure out how to fix this the better and it's gonna be years and by the way they said alan i think told us off camera that they're probably about five years away from being able to diagnose cte in living people so the second they're able to do that you'd be able to go to the doctor get your diagnosis and you'd know and that's average people anybody doing anything so not just for the nhl but anywhere where you're physically jarred living you'd be

able to do that can you imagine the legal ramifications of something like that jesus it's crazy it's crazy that's almost i try not to think about it well that's because because again Because it's so – you don't even know what to – the ramifications are so big, you can't even process them. No. I'm like a lot of people where I've never been diagnosed with a concussion, but I've definitely had one. Definitely had one, yeah. A bunch of those sub-concussive ones. I told the story about the tire.

Like, it's scary to think about. Yeah. So, anyway, just thought you should know that. It's a great episode. And here's the thing. A little bit of heavy stuff at the beginning and a little bit about players deciding general managers as well. I don't know if you've seen this. You mentioned the Chicago Blackhawks situation with Hosa Sharp and who's the other guy?

Hosa and Sharp. Hosa Sharp and Olchuk, right? Is Olchuk involved? He was hosting the, maybe that's what you're thinking. No, I thought Eddie Olchuk was a part of the group that was going to help hire the next general manager. No, that panel there that we were watching, that he was on stage there. Maybe that's what it is. Oh, I thought that was him.

And then you have Verbeek and Niedermeyer hiring the general manager. No, Verbeek was hired as the new GM. Korea and Niedermeyer in Anaheim hiring the new GM. So, you know, I think it's interesting. And I think it's a topic for this show as well. And I know we get to get to the press conference here because I know it's a shorter show on Fridays. But we ask for new voices in the game, right?

We are now empowering people who have never managed before. Now, Verbeek has managed. He's the one who got hired. Yes, I know. he managed but the people who hired him had not ever they don't know what it's like to manage an echl team from the nhl over the ahl team go scout go scout go this go that nothing to do with that and that's the person they hire my question to you is and i think the answer will be obvious do we not think there are more and this is nothing against pat verbique

personally no but can you can you tell me beyond the shadow of a doubt that there are not more qualified people out there there are definitely more qualified people out there and the more i learn about the national hockey league the more i think i'm right when i say the only reason there's a stanley cup winner is because there has to be one and pat for beak is not at fault pat for beak could be brilliant he could win the next cup i don't know yeah but what i'm saying is the people that hired him are gonna go with the guy they know yeah well and and by the way eisman who's a former player but brilliant again earned it yeah he went to the red wings for a long time and well and for beat too earned it he was in tampa he built that team and then he followed

eisenman to detroit and then i suppose now he's hired my argument i suppose my argument is this are we going to get new voices if this is the new way to hire people and this is nothing against verbique or eisenman or any other former player are we going to get the new voices from different backgrounds from you know different different genders experience different color yeah skin color are we gonna get any of that if we keep if we hire this way i have a question about that i don't know people are like that same problems kind of perpetuate it's still the same people hiring within the same people does that make sense no no it's a conversation worth having absolutely

anyway what the hell do I know a bunch not if you read the comment section a lot of history we saw the right thing happen in Vancouver where they brought in Rachel Dory and the second ever female assistant general manager

Emily Castonguay and like seeing that is very promising but then we see the other hires and we're like oh ex-hockey players awesome you can hire them but yeah there's nothing wrong with that but hire like both we can hire outside of it too bring in a robust staff with lots of uh diverse voices how about that idea i like that a word growing in popularity robust is it yeah i notice it more and more it's a good word okay well um instead of

the press conference today since we're going to be taking a lot of questions tonight um can we do the black history month yeah my first feature on black history yeah that was gonna be the first the question okay so so here's here's what i'd like to tell you so should i should i wait and do the press conference thing or should we just get into it i think just go all right let's go so um it's so funny steve texted me jesse it's a very steve moo and he sent me he sent me a thing he's like hey just in case i'm like steve that's my first one that's the first thing i'm going to talk about he's like did you know it existed it's like i just wanted to help you want to make sure good guess so let's talk about the colored hockey league you ever heard of the colored hockey league

oh yes this week this week oh gosh color hockey league was founded in halifax nova scotia in the late 1800s 1895 pastor james borden dartmouth church james a.r kinney a lawyer and community leader james robinson uh and a pan-african organizer named henry sylvester williams the point of the league and this is interesting on its founding was to get young black men to church on Sundays. And remember, it's 1895. So you cannot, we can't relate to the role religion played in people's lives 120 years ago. We have no idea what it was like. I come across this in history all the time. People are like, well, that sounds really stupid. It's because religion was very, very important. So the idea was you and your buddies would go play a hockey game, but you'd also

attend a church service and you would play against other local church league teams. Now, to understand why this league exists, I think we need to talk about Africville. This is a bigger conversation. Africville was a district in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was founded by black Nova Scotians from a variety of origins. You can imagine some of them were settlers from formerly enslaved African-Americans from the 13 colonies, black loyalists who were freed by the crown during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

so during the 20th century so the 1900s halifax neglected the community failed to provide basic infrastructure upgrades such as roads water or sewage okay city continued to use the area as an industrial site and by the way in halifax up until 2009 i believe they just dumped all the raw sewage into the ocean so if you went to the bathroom you could be sure that when you went to the bathroom that eventually made its way out into the ocean and then just kind of floated away and i remember when i moved there they got a treatment plant and then it broke down anyway uh you can imagine how disgusting i mean we didn't treat water very well in those in those years so you can imagine how disgusting it was and this is right by the water so the residents

of africa struggled with poverty and poor health conditions as a result community uh buildings became badly deteriorated so in the late 1960s halifax city council condemned the entire area and said to everybody hey i knew you grew up here and i know this is your house but you're leaving and you're gonna come and uh you're gonna be in government housing you're not gonna own it but you're gonna be in government housing and we're building a highway and a bridge in your home so we we want that area for a bridge you're gonna have to leave and activists and residents began after this to protest this and to protest their treatment the halifax uh government went in and obviously bulldozed the whole thing and so when we get back to the colored hockey league you have

to understand that in canada if you're from the states you don't know what this is like in canada we we look at the states and go wow they were so racist right they were so bad the reality is for a black person in most of this country after uh after the civil war it wasn't a whole lot different an invisible line doesn't make people nice yes yeah and and so you know uh it wasn't it yes black people were free and they became some became educated whatever but on the whole the idea was let's keep them down that was the that was the thing well what you described doesn't sound like freedom no it's it's just yeah so what's amazing about the colored hockey league is it was a black history month is not black trauma month and i want to clear i want

to make that clear okay gray said that on twitter there are uh there are amazing stories that come out of this and that i think the color hockey league is one of them this thing ran until the mid-1930s and um and so the africville seasides hockey team uh of the color hockey league won the championship in 1901 and 1902 they beat the west end rangers from prince edward island there were up to 30 teams at one point wow that's cool isn't that crazy yeah and and again you got to remember nova scotia as i love nova scotia i live there is amazing not that many people they had 30 teams 30 teams playing in this and uh it ended it sorry it ended in 1930 um there there was no other place for these players to play hockey you know hockey is the thing that

brings us all into this show these people this was it they worked their whole day every day waiting for sunday to play hockey so the fact that this league existed it had no funding it had it had support only from its community completely ignored by everybody outside of it absolutely um unbelievable as many as 400 black canadian players from nova scotia new brunswick prince edward island participated in the competition excuse me uh the color hockey league is uh accredited as the first league to allow a goaltender to leave his feet to cover the puck in 1900 that's isn't that cool unbelievable isn't that cool we talk about the forward pass i i don't know that that's equally as groundbreaking did they have the forward

pass no not the forward pass didn't come until the 20s all right so the colored league didn't have it either oh my god so then the practice um wow here's what else the the colored hockey league's responsible for giving the game that you watch um the national hockey league by the way adopted the goaltender leaving his feet to cover the puck in 1917 so that's about 20 years later it is also claimed that the first player to use a slap shot was eddie martin of the halifax eureka in 1906 pretty darn cool the freaking slap shot yep that is uh i've i've read that one before because who who did they say it was before i don't know i don't even remember that i can't i'm sure that's that's something that's a question for jeff merrick mr he's like hockey or uh or ken

reed yeah yeah especially because this is east coast yeah oh true yeah very very true one thing yeah reader might have him beat oh yeah and um there is a documentary that's it's not entirely on the colored hockey league but most of it is it's called soul on ice they just do a bunch of interviews and they and they talk about and you get if you want to continue learning about this it's it's terrific go watch it i was trying to look up see if it was on netflix but i don't think it is it's on some streaming service called 2b but i'm sure you can find it online if you just google it yeah anyway i just i just thought it was so cool like two a goaltender covering the puck and a slap shot that came from the colored hockey league in eastern canada wow in the early

1900s that's pretty cool i i like i i uh even doing the research i was like wow this is this amazing i had no idea so um again when when i do these little features they're going to be about triumph right they're going to be obviously there's going to be some struggle but they're going to be about triumph it's about what uh amazing creativity came out of some of these people and some of these organizations uh next up we're going to talk about the first uh black man to be a goaltender and win a stanley cup in the nhl that'll be next week just saying i think it's aren't you glad i sent you that yes i am i am steve always glad when you text me oh so that's great do we want to do a press conference or do we want to wrap and then

we do some questions tonight during the twitch feed sure we can do questions tonight um so one thing i do have to mention though is that today is the launch with two things i've mentioned today is the launch of something very special for our discord community they launched a minecraft server so if you join our discord or if you don't if you just like go on twitter or something email or dm our community manager robert malloy i'm sure he'll send you the server link or whatever but get on the discord head over to the minecraft channel and everybody has their own um everybody has their own little channel there you're talking about minecraft and in there uh they're playing today starting today on the stpn minecraft server so it exists there's a whole world apparently um

There's, like, an NPC. His name is Steve. He wanders the island, and he is just aimless. Attacks you! He just hangs out and looks. He's aimless. He's very friendly. Nice.

All of our mods have their own Minecraft characters, and they've been testing it out and hanging out. And Steve's been there the entire time, watching over everything. So if you're a fan of Minecraft, you can now enjoy SDPN Minecraft. and there's a there's a dangle navy ship it has the logo on it and everything huge it's ginormous it's so big i don't know if you could actually drive it i've been asking if we can get on it can you mine it for wood though that's what i need yes you can okay it's minecraft hey i want to go on a cruise on the ship but i don't know if that's a thing you can do i don't know this is amazing i got to discover how to play minecraft but yeah today go minecraft with everybody crazy

you subscribe to the email list oh wow that's amazing it's right there it's right there subscribe get a jersey the jersey is gonna come with some free little trinkets as well we might have had some leftover trading cards we might have a custom daniel navy box that the jersey comes in who knows i found a bunch of the cards in my car by the way do you want them uh i think we have i have enough okay yeah how did you end up with them uh i think i was supposed to You took them home to sign them and then you never did. No, I brought you a bunch.

There's just some extras. You can have them. Everyone who bought a signed card got one. And then I stole some. You can keep it. Just sign them? Give them to Leo. There you go.

he's a thick boy I'll watch him before we get in the bath and he'll have a soap bottle and he'll shake it and you just see these muscles I'm like Lester he's a monster if he runs into you, you feel it

if she hits me now I'm like whatever kid like she bounces off leo hits you it's like oh i felt that like i i know he's there i keep looking at him like do i have a jack baby yeah you do i think he's a baby lesnar baby i think he's a jack baby it's all in the it's in the upper back who's his favorite favorite leaf um so all uh leafs and all colors of leafs like blue or red or whatever in any book he just goes hockey oh hockey learning them young his favorite leaf is john tavaris because that is his uh doll that he has oh that's cool and i say hey leo where's john tavaris and he goes and gets it pretty very

smart kid i'm screwed so yesterday the correct answer to that is he doesn't have one because he doesn't know john tavaris so i was i was telling you guys this before the show he was having a baby tantrum so i'm trying to put him in his sleep sack and he's just crying and flailing and being a baby and it's like he turned into a toddler mid tantrum from a baby he's just i don't wanna and i was like my wife's heard him say a couple sentences that was my first one and it was oh yeah what was that yeah it's like father i have a list of grievances yeah and then pulls out the thing yeah who told you that there is like a there's like a i would say a month-long period where they're no longer they're they're a baby at the beginning of the month and

at the end of the month they're no longer a baby and i think you're in it when so like he said his first sentence like it's like one and a half so he's gonna file like taxes pretty soon yeah adam to end the show can you tell us the moment when you were like oh everly's a person you have a story where you're like oh she she did a thing and now she's a human and it's scary well yeah there was a few there was a few i think um uh she started to become a person when she went to daycare especially like her her linguistic skills picked up her movement picked up she was a little bit like she just didn't feel like walking until she was 15 months old or something like that so um she would scoot around on her butt she didn't even crawl like she was just odd that way actually

15 is not bad 15 but yeah it's fine i don't know whatever i i was like she's good it's not like she's gonna be 18 and not walking she'll walk it's just whatever people like what if she doesn't walk by this month i don't know she's a child she'll figure it out yeah anyway so um uh i i remember um because i've got that i've got that red mustang right so she loves that car and she loved that car before she could speak just loves it because she so um i picked her up from daycare and i said uh everly did you have a good day at school and usually she would say nothing or she would just kind of blather on about nothing and you couldn't understand what she was saying anyway she loves to talk and she said to me she said yes daddy vroom vroom car and

and this would have been about may last year and uh and i was like yeah i said yeah she said red car i said yeah we're getting in the right car she's like okay and now like she loves cars like i do so when i go when i pull up in my pickup she's like daddy it's daddy's truck she loves pointing you out does she like she loves when adam's there she's like is that it when you go uh when you go uh halloween with with leo for the first time i don't know if you did this year did you halloween with him yeah he was blue from oh yeah okay so so everly didn't get to do it last year because of covid so she did it this year for the first time and she walked right up to the uh to to every house in our neighborhood and be like hi i'm everly and this is daddy yeah

this is very polite kid so yeah it's it's it's it's magic watching your child grow up it's magic i would never do the six months the first six months again but everything else has been great since then um she's like uh it's yeah so it does happen steven it's gonna happen very quickly and you're gonna look at your kid and you're like I don't have a baby anymore this is not a baby

the person I don't even know if my kid's a toddler anymore I don't think she is two and a half almost three in May she's not a toddler I'd say

I'd say three she's just a kid at that point like I'm almost I'm almost out of the toddler stage it's crazy it is weird

anyway get her ready for high school yeah it's gonna happen soon it's okay guys it's only a decade until she hates me
