Starting point is 00:02:50 should I start there yo I think they're bad um let's talk about uh Boston Pizza Stouffville Wednesday February 12th 2025 Boston Pizza at 1060 Hoover Park Drive most of the tickets are sold actually um but there are a couple available and you can get them uh in the description of whether this is a video or an audio podcast for you. 5.30 doors open, 6.30 show starts and 8 o'clock Canada plays Sweden. We're going to be hanging around to watch along with you and
Starting point is 00:03:19 Molson Canadian is sponsoring the event. It's official beer of hockey, partner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the PWHL and you can play Call the Shot for your shot at $40,000 worth of prizing. All you have to do is order a Canadian. Pew, pew, pew, pew. Yeah, that's right. Pew, pew, pew, pew. Those are some
Starting point is 00:03:36 weak pews. Man, you are tough. Pew, pew! There we go. Thank you. Those are Bobby McMahon pews. It's going to be a slow-moving show. No, we're good. I don't know what Friday's going to be like, but we're figuring out today. 10 p.m. start in Seattle. I'm not complaining.
Starting point is 00:03:52 I'm not complaining. That sounds like you are. No. Sounds like a complaint. No, I am lamenting. It's different. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, fair.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Oh, yeah. That's good. Good use of words. Yeah, I'm not saying they should change it. I'm just saying, oh, no. I like that. I see it on the schedule. I don't go, people should cater to my needs.
Starting point is 00:04:12 I go, oh, nuts. Now, the Leafs are playing Vancouver this weekend, right? Yep, Saturday, Vancouver. Last game before the break. Game starts at 7 o'clock Eastern, which is an afternoon game for the Vancouver Canucks. Let's go, center of the universe. And, you know, we were talking about it in the group chat a little bit. And I have to say, the odd afternoon game for the Leafs, I'm not saying I want it on a Saturday.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Saturday, I like it at 7. the odd afternoon game or the odd early game wouldn't be the worst thing from time to time last year the Leafs had zero exactly zero they might have had a couple on they always have any at home they always play like shit in the afternoon it's a guarantee that's not true it is no Mitch Marner went through a like dynasty god run for a while there and everyone's like yes make him play in front of children right and didn't they win their loan or their two afternoon games so far this year yeah they won those one on new year's day or new year's eve uh they had a day game then and the one on the sunday that steve was at i know or that was the new year's eve one
Starting point is 00:05:19 you didn't go yeah yeah they had two afternoon games i was supposed to go the jets one they lost that one and then i ended up going to the new year's eve one and they won that one you're you're like oh yeah they've played two i'm like when was that when was oh i was there yeah the one you were supposed to go to and then the one you were at yeah yeah yeah well it's because i knew yeah that's right that's right now no no but adam your point on that they should play more afternoon games i think hockey in general should adapt more afternoon games across the board i think it's a great family sport and those are the only moments when you guys you have little kids you know is that the only time when you can get little kids really out to these games and fill them up you know yeah and
Starting point is 00:05:58 hockey doesn't have enough i know other markets do and i wish more markets would i know every saturday like it's not every saturday but a lot of saturdays i can turn on the tv i know it's like 1 p.m i can turn on the rangers yeah they're gonna be there i turn on the bruins the bruins play a lot of afternoon games the rangers do and i wish more teams around the league would have that i know what's cool about the bruins is they're not winning as much as they used to and that's really cool love seeing that in the afternoon i really like that's good for everybody but i i think it'd be it'd be great for for hockey yeah even like baseball where they do it just middle of the week 1 p.m oh the fucking reds are on yeah the reds are playing the pirates and it's 1 p.m on a
Starting point is 00:06:36 tuesday that'd be sick if hockey had more of that well and hockey does have more of that the ohl yep the ahl the pwhl yeah uh the jays play in the afternoon the raptors uh have a lot of afternoon games i think here's what i'm going to tell you the leafs are the only ones that are the raptors afternoon games on sundays are actually infamous around the nba because those are the games that the raptors usually win because the lore of toronto is that the road team always comes in on saturdays and they have the most fun in toronto there's there's different rules around partying clubs in canada which is a big thing with nba players where it's different in the states versus canada so you always get them going out there is a video from this season weeks ago of jason tatum
Starting point is 00:07:22 and Jalen Brown going out on a night before the game where they play the Raptors. The Raptors beat the Celtics this year. The Celtics. They beat the Celtics. One of the best teams in the league. They beat them. And a lot of people are like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:07:35 There's actually videos of them out partying. Who knows if the Toronto thing is still true. So afternoon games, it helps your home team. Oh, that's good. I absolutely love that. Because usually when I go to a Raptors game, it's a Sunday. And I can't remember the last time I saw them lose. no that's hilarious good on the sunday i like that i didn't know that like they're people too
Starting point is 00:07:55 you know they get hung over i've been i've been in the building for a 21 point comeback and a 17 point comeback both in the fourth quarter for the raps and i want to say both were sunday games i'm gonna pull up uh jason tatum out in toronto nice please let's go i want to see this you can Where was he? He is. I'm just pull up this Reddit post. There he is with. That's the night before a game.
Starting point is 00:08:24 That's a rapper. Top five. That looks like you're criminal. That's your phone. Criminal. He's literally a criminal who's been in jail. But yeah, that's your that's that's night before basketball game. He's got to play the NBA.
Starting point is 00:08:36 He's definitely, you know, just out there drinking kale shakes. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah, for sure. and he's just like he's sleepy he just flew in from Boston he just flew in from Boston that's fine
Starting point is 00:08:49 I have also been sleepy on a Saturday night in downtown Toronto you know what I mean oh that's great I like that so afternoon games it might help the Leafs I don't know if hockey players have the same tendency to go out a lot
Starting point is 00:09:06 I don't know hockey players like to drink I don't know if I've told this story on the show I haven't been shy about this story, but I don't know if it's told this on the show. So 2015-16, so this would have been September 2015, media day for the NHL players. They come in Toronto and they do a bunch of media. Now they do it in Vegas. They alternate where they do it.
Starting point is 00:09:36 It was at the CBC building. and day one they stuck me on like the coach's corners desk uh because no one was using it and i got to shoot a bunch of stuff with players and they were high energy and except for sean monaghan but that's okay because that was the heyday of the boring sean monaghan thing anyway the next day was so slow paced and i'm like am i like are my questions bad all the stuff that was working yesterday and getting like fun jovial answers out of these guys is not working today and finally someone had to be like oh steve they're all hung up because not you it's them because the guys on day two all went out and partied with the guys who were there on day one who were done but the
Starting point is 00:10:26 guys on day two so there was there was i want to say it was a crosby it was sydney crosby i want to say Stephen Stamkos and was it Eric Carlson there was like a three of them interview that aired like a part of it aired every weekend on hockey night for like the entire season and like supposedly before they shot that they're like oh yeah we need Advil like before we can get out there man Carlson I have a photo of myself with Eric Carlson and as someone who has been hung over you you recognize game game recognize game on that I know for certain he could hear his heartbeat oh god if you're if you're ever interested in reading draft day two coverage from media members it's probably not going to be very good oh i get some floppy floppy uh writing
Starting point is 00:11:15 from those media you know and we've all been to drafts we know what happens night one of the draft when everybody gets together we've all seen okay the responsible ones finish their stuff before they go to the bar yeah the vets yeah finish their article at the bar they have a laptop and a pint next to it and they just hope not to spill it and you know who doesn't do any of that it's christopher johnston he's gotta run heavens no loves loves like if you can get him going and have some beers with cj he's the best to have beers with but at the draft i remember like you know like julian's going out and he's out till 2 a.m and you're like julian's it's the story's just a bunch of him like like blurred and like a bunch of other people that he hangs out with
Starting point is 00:11:55 with the athletic or whatever and then chris you don't see not a peep from him he's up at 6 a.m going for a run like i feel like julian uh is living what chris used to live at the draft do you know what i'm saying like he was julian's out there having a good time being social whatever cj's like i've done that now it's time to focus he's been to i think he was he was saying it's it's 19 straight stanley cup finals yeah he's done this he's been there i i'm glad he's still that out with julian who's who's 15 years is is is a younger self you know that he's not still out there partying with them my record is two straight stanley cup finals oh yeah yeah got two that's pretty good yeah do you hear the footsteps pittsburgh nashville yeah both both pittsburgh
Starting point is 00:12:41 cups yeah yeah um home team won both times i uh um i've kind of uh i'm kind of interested to see how the decentralized draft really looks because, you know, there was a lot of media who were like, this could be really bad for the sport. And they were taking every source that they had. They're ringing up every general manager, AGM. This is bad, right?
Starting point is 00:13:05 Tell me this is bad so I can put it in an article because that's how fun the draft is. Yes, for me, it's the best. It's the best. But the draft as an entertainment product, better last year, so boring before that. and still way too long day two began at 8 a.m local yeah what like and vegas statistic piece of garbage well put that together and by the by by 10 a.m they had got to like round four because
Starting point is 00:13:30 they're like please just get this over with whatever that name is highlight our next pick is a goalie any goalie um so yeah i i there was a huge pushback and i i just i was like oh this is the media working for themselves here a little bit on this and i don't blame them not one bit They were right. They were right. Now, let's talk about the Leafs and Flames last night. Before the game, one William Nylander was asked, what do you know about Dustin Wolfe?
Starting point is 00:13:56 And he's like, nothing. And he's like, there's a scouting report on him, but I probably won't look at it. And he didn't look at it, and he scored three goals. It's his first hat trick in eight years to the day. His first three goals in his hometown? Well, birth town. Hometown, I think he'd call Stockholm.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Oh, I think you'd call it Toronto, buddy. Oh. I think you'd call it Toronto. First three goals in Calgary where he was born when his father, Michael, was playing there. Yes. And it's kind of hard to believe that the guy who is now second in league goal scoring,
Starting point is 00:14:33 three goals behind Leon Dreisaitl. Do you hear those footsteps, Leon? Yeah. It's shocking that he's never had more than two hat tricks. What was the stat on the broadcast? I guess he's had 35 or something multi-goal games, but only one of them was a hat trick. And that, by the way, unlike Jesse, in case you're wondering,
Starting point is 00:14:52 Jesse will tell you that a four-goal game is not a hat trick game. It's not. It's a four-goal game. He's never had one. A home run's not also a triple. So Nylander has never scored four goals in a game either. Multi-goal games, they should just say he's had 35 two-goal games or 34 two-goal games and one hat-trick.
Starting point is 00:15:13 They could have said that. Multi-goal means like two, three, four. They're only twos. You could have like 25 goal games. It just doesn't sound as impressive. None of them are hat-tricks, though. None of those 25 goals are hat-tricks. No, none of them are hat-tricks.
Starting point is 00:15:25 What about six? Is six goals... No. That's two hat-tricks. Three is the hat-trick. Double hat-trick? Six divided by two is three. The number three is the hat-trick.
Starting point is 00:15:36 But Jesse, if you hit two home runs, it's two home runs, right? Yeah. Those are different at-bats. but they're different shots when you i'm quantifying the actual the feat of you know what i need i need the comment section to take care of this debate i need to know we've had no because they're gonna be like i've always been jesse said it so i agree you know what it's funnier to agree with jesse so let's do that we have this debate for years i've always been right
Starting point is 00:16:02 i don't think anything's gonna move me off of this um now let's talk a little bit about the just the willy side of this because this guy is like the breakaway king this year um he is he's he's fooling goalies every time with his shot i is it because he's that good or do do elite shooters get a bit of a boogeyman bonus what do you mean tell me well you see willy you see dry sidle you see you know matthews you see mcdavid like you see certain guys come down on a breakaway doesn't a little part of you poop your pants if you're a goalie well i think you're freaked out yeah especially if he's already beat you that night and i think dustin wolf younger goaltender spectacular january rookie of the month uh guy's gonna be a stud but you know at this
Starting point is 00:16:56 point in his career he's never seen some of these guys before so he's got to figure them out yeah he's he's got a i think a scouting report would probably do him better than willie right because i think if you're the shooter you sort of adjust to where the goalie is right yeah yep um i mean willie i mean i i almost feel like he's talented enough that like i don't know how badly he needs the scouting report you know what i mean like yeah no i'm just he's just some other guy standing in the way of the thing i'm supposed to put the puck in and i'll shoot at the empty space right ideally it goes in i i make the lfr in my head uh as the game is going and at the end of one it was going to be like the ballad of dustin wolf and i was going to finally give him his shine
Starting point is 00:17:43 because like you know the conversation around the calder there's been a lot of uh i'm gonna say eastern bias around it like uh and canadian bias i mean lane hudson in any other year i think is the runaway Calder winner he he plays too much he's put up too many points for a defenseman you know it's not about like Mitch Kov or Celebrini being bad like do they end up being better players yeah there's a good chance but Lane Hudson's been ridiculous Dustin Wolfe has like a preposterous record really good statistics and might take a team that a lot of us thought was potentially going to be a bottom feeder into playoff contention when was the last time a rookie goalie did that it's a rare gift yep it's a rare thing to and before the season
Starting point is 00:18:39 i was like okay well surely calgary is going to get another goalie it's just vladar and wolf you're throwing wolf to the wolves basically because it's it ain't going to be vladar and if it is it's gonna be a problem he's completely changed my perspective of the Calgary Flames remember a couple years ago when we're like yeah the Sabres are gonna finish second in the Atlantic because of Devin Levi whoops that's what nope we missed we got the wrong goalie wrong year there it is Dustin Wolfe I think Levi is gonna be great but Dustin Wolfe the the Flames I thought they were rushing him great job three goals and then he got pumped but so that LFR got thrown in the garbage three goals in the first period one of them counted um yes and and it kind
Starting point is 00:19:25 of it felt like the Leafs had played really well but I thought as soon as Farabee scored and they were like it's his first goal as a flame I'm like of course of course it is the Leafs are so leafy that he scored his first as a flame twice last night it's not great they still won but he scored his first as a flame twice that was so funny they got the puck and they had to throw it back yeah Yeah. Hilarious. I don't think I've ever seen that. He had three goals last night.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Did he have three? I think he... Well, one of them was discounted, but he had three. Didn't he have two goals after the goal? Am I wrong? I think only one. It was only one? Unless he got credited with something else.
Starting point is 00:20:00 Oh, okay. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm wrong. But I'll look at the box score. But I thought Farabee had two last night. And it doesn't really matter. The reality is that they got him to do exactly what he did. and what's interesting about and this is where i'm segueing dustin wolf here by the way flame
Starting point is 00:20:17 still in the playoff spot this morning despite the last loss last night they are in a dead tie with the canucks in terms of games played points percentage everything but they're head-to-heads better so the flames get the edge and so um so tight the it's very very close in that coronado and sharon govich got the other two right right right oh they did give it to sharon govich damn it yeah because didn't it like hit off his pants yeah yeah mckenzie wieger fantasy holder damn right i did yeah but it was the goals are worth more right right as they should be yeah uh the i think the thing is uh there are going to be guys that do well under torts and there are guys that are not and he's he's what you call polarizing 50 love 50 don't uh fairby brings a lot to this
Starting point is 00:21:05 this flames team that they really didn't have they kept talking about jam oh he brings jam I'm like, ooh, is it strawberry? Is it raspberry? What's the best jam? What is the best jam? Raspberry. Oh, good. No question.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Raspberry. But he does have that element of there's something there. I didn't really notice Morgan Frost in the same way. He might take some time to adjust. No, I agree. But I thought Farabee was like, oh, yeah, I can see why they wanted this guy. And what a great trade that was for him. Well, when the trade happened, I mean, listen, you can't pay, like, super minutiae attention to absolutely everybody on all 32 teams.
Starting point is 00:21:43 No. You pick up pieces. What does Bob McKenzie say? Know one thing about each team? Yes. Smart. He talked about waking up in the morning. All right.
Starting point is 00:21:52 What's the most important thing for this team today? Right. When they announced that trade, I was like, oh, they got rid of Farabee? Oh, he makes five mil? I didn't know that. Yeah, but he's pretty good, though. I like to play. He has 19 points.
Starting point is 00:22:07 That's it? Mm-hmm. So I'm a big proponent of good players don't magically forget how to play hockey. Something's obviously rotten here. I guess it's the relationship with the coach. Oh, but he's going to be separated from his best friend. Oh, his best friend's in the deal, too. All right.
Starting point is 00:22:24 So they get to go to Calgary and have fun. The Flames are a good team, man. Like, that was the impression I got last night. Mm-hmm. I did, too. I think that they are not like last year. They just seemed a little. I mean, it didn't help that they were literally the lead story on Hockey Night in Canada or during headlines every single week about who they were trading.
Starting point is 00:22:42 But despite the the talent leaving the guys that are there pulled it together. I thought their power play looked clean. I mean, I hope that the yeah, I hope that I hope. Yeah, we'll talk about the Leafs power play in a second. It helped that the Leafs keep kept giving them five on. Oh my God. We could talk about that part too. I need to we need to have a word with Simon Benoit.
Starting point is 00:23:00 but the uh the flames are not the mess they were 18 months ago they were a mess 18 months ago well remember the jets uh were just a sad sack franchise they're on the verge of blowing it up then they double down on everybody shifley and hellebuck eight year deals and we're like okay i guess let's see and it was a million percent the right decision they just needed a reset all right let's have a summer let's freaking sit on a dock for a little while you know do a couple push-ups whatever the hell they do and let's start game one fresh and right away it was the right decision with the flames i feel like all last year we're like there's too many players for them to be this bad they had a talent they oh that was the surprising part about the flames is the talent
Starting point is 00:23:51 was there but it felt like that oiler series had just blown their confidence out and then of course you lose Kudrow Kachuk well you this summer you lose Markstrom and you got better in net like uh it's it's a funny thing it is and and whether or not they make the playoffs because the Flames are a house money team you make the playoffs that's great go as far as you can go have fun boys if you don't make the playoffs I still think you look at this season as a pretty successful one already assuming things continue to go the way that they are obviously it's better if you make the playoffs but i think you're set up pretty well for the off season you're set up pretty well for next year and you know when things were really bad things like the cadre contract and
Starting point is 00:24:35 the hubert no contract kind of hung over the flames it was like well how would they ever move on from those oh cadre still got it watching the last night made me miss him yeah i still got it watching them last night i was like i i don't feel like this is any sort of drag on this team no not at all not even kind of at seven mil especially going forward yeah not not that flames fans ever disliked calgary or cadre but it was there he was one of the names that could have been moved right i don't want to be misconstrued it's like he was one of the names of people like well yeah but it's you know he's in his mid there's early to mid 30s and it's a long contract he's john tavaris's age i know isn't that wild i don't know they played together in
Starting point is 00:25:12 london i i know i same draft year they were drafted six spots apart i don't know why my brain won't compute that but they are I think it's because Kadri is this fun ridiculous fiery guy and John Tavares just drinks kale and wears amulets and just sort of doesn't say anything uh we'll talk about John in a second but just from the Calgary perspective really even though it was a 6-3 loss impressed really impressed so much of the team was special or so much of the game was special teams yes right so i i hope murray edwards watched that that game last night and has watched the team closely all season long and rewards them at the trade deadline here and allows them to go out and spend a whole bunch of money because only the columbus blue jackets right now in the nhl have
Starting point is 00:25:57 more cap space than the calgary flames they can be one of the most fascinating trade deadline teams here by not only being a facilitator for other deals and taking on dead money because they have so much cash space but just taking on contracts all willy-nilly who can be ufas this upcoming season because it doesn't really cost them anything in terms of off the roster you can just take on guys because you have so much free cash space and they should go and buy because this team can do damage and oh yeah when when the leafs made the playoffs in 2017 uh with again young team no one really thought it was going to happen before that season began uh what did management reward them with brian boyle for a second round pick like that's all like i don't
Starting point is 00:26:45 think flames fans are asking for the sun and the moon here and i don't think the players are asking for that either they they deserve to be rewarded with something yeah and i think like the bottom of the west is it's a two-team race it looks like at this point like the top teams have separated themselves and the bottom just looks like vancouver and calgary and there's no doubt in my mind that calgary can put together a good back half of the season and and uh take that last spot from vancouver what i what i like about what the flames position is too is going into the summer right now they have no key players on the roster with expiring contracts like no major rfa no major ufa you know you know it's actually a really good thing yes now uh good thing it used to be like oh no you want
Starting point is 00:27:29 you want money coming off the books no it's not like that well but to add to that point 37 million dollars in cap space holy shit so no major ufas to re-sign and 37 all right marner and ranton and capris yeah no no that's that's why i think it's important to talk about their cash space because it's it's all of that money plus if you look at their draft picks i know you have puck media two first round picks this upcoming draft that's incredible asset damn the caps going up you have draft picks in every round including the first plus you can sign a bunch of guys plus you're in a window where you're making the playoffs and can win now calgary could be really dangerous next season and for the back out of this season yeah i i know this is weird to do
Starting point is 00:28:13 like the day after our favorite team beats them 6-3 but like yeah i've what i i would have never predicted uh at the beginning of the season the calgary flames would be in this good of a spot oh yeah it's great the special sauce on top of all that is justin wolf who's fantastic what okay what's his contract situation 885 or something until next next season next through next season and then he's an rfa uh july 1st they should fire a money cannon at his face yeah uh and just see what he says as soon as possible so that the price doesn't go up they probably could get him for i don't know six let's say it's seven million while they have currently the year his contract would start 63 million in cap that they could work with so you're still you oh you re-sign
Starting point is 00:29:01 dustin wolf for seven million dollars let's say let's say it's seven because goalies always get paid a little bit less and then and then it's like oh no i only have 55 million 56 million dollars to play with what am i gonna do dude if if listen him signing a year ahead of time while playing this good is him doing the flames of favor yes so if they come to the table and they go uh dustin we would like to sign you to an extension what were you thinking i would just slide them a picture of jeremy swayman um 8.25 thanks i'm gonna make a prediction uh the 27 28 season the calgary flames go to the stanley cup final no that's the that's the first year of their new building they are primed to be a really good team in the next few years i think
Starting point is 00:29:49 it would be a serendipitous if their first year in the new building finally calgary gets this amazing govich jesse it would be very sharon govich if that season they make a run to the cup final and they should be aiming for that you're right i think that'd be sick my one thing with the flames one thing oh dear oh adam hates alberta straight i hate your 10 flat income tax How dare you keep your money like that? No. What it really is, is I, outside of Dustin Wolf, and sometimes a goalie's enough,
Starting point is 00:30:22 who's the elite talent two seasons from now? Excuse me? Who's the elite talent? What did we just talk about? Outside of Dustin Wolf. $63 million in cast money. I will buy my elite talent. You're going to go buy it.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Okay. Who cares? Potter McDavid, Calgary Flame. Why not? Oh, my God. Did you imagine? I might forego him being a leaf just to watch that. Just, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:43 Oh my, can you imagine? No. No, I can't. And they just go like, here, Connor, here's 20 mil. Eight years. 20 shmil. So that'd be $160 million contract. Well, actually they can't do eight.
Starting point is 00:30:55 They can do seven. $140 million contract. Broke ass. That's- No, I'm kidding. Broke ass. That's so crazy. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:31:03 Yeah. 20 mil. Sometimes life throws your curve balls and you don't have time to get to them. And that's where TaskRabbit comes in. and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things,

Starting point is 00:32:47 Okay, now on the Leafs side of things, one of the things that we've been talking about with the Leafs is depth scoring. And when you lose a couple of guys who are good scorers for you, it can be hard. But I look at the Leafs and I go, oh, my God, there are six players on this team with over 16 goals. That's pretty good depth scoring. The problem with that is then you go to number seven and it's five. And then you go to number eight and it's three. And so they have six guys who can score. Robertson's only got five?
Starting point is 00:33:17 No, Riley's got five. Robertson has, oh, no, Robertson's got eight. Sorry, he's got eight. Sorry, sorry. That's not right. That's not right. That's not right at all. Eight, and then Patches and Morgan Riley have five,
Starting point is 00:33:31 and Lorenz has five. It's a steep drop-off. It's steep. Yes. They need, and I hate to say it, Callie Yarncroke numbers, don't they? They do. You need a guy with 10, 11 in there,
Starting point is 00:33:44 and that kind of smooths it out. Because that's good. You guys, this team, it's very likely, assuming injuries are not a factor in this, that they have six guys cross 20 goals. And that's a solid, that's great. so most teams would would love that here's here's here's my thing with some of the depth scoring on this team can they score or are they given zero opportunity to even try and i just feel like
Starting point is 00:34:18 the way the roster is constructed uh if you're a bottom sixer on the leafs you know what your job is if you're steven lorenz like the two-on-one with him and mcmahon was so funny like if you go and watch it slowly he passes it and then he might as well have gone to the bench like he's like well he knew he knew there's not going to be a rebound even like i'm not getting this pass there's not even going to be a rebound bobby mcmahon is going to do bobby mcmahon things like you know your role the only guy on this team i look at and i'm like uh you're kind of disappointing because you're supposed to score a little is max domey but other than that three goals and 16 assists yeah patcher patcher ready like has is like robocop um steven lorenz no
Starting point is 00:35:10 david kampf no that someone passed him the puck in front yesterday and he was like what the hell do i do with this uh pontus holmberg no fraser mittens a kid um ryan reeves had what was the xg on that scoring he had a steal and a breakaway he almost scored in a two goal game a very winnable game for the opposition three and a half minutes to go on the road i first thing i thought when i saw him is what the hell is he doing on the ice second thing was oh my god he's about to score oh i wanted that goal so bad three minutes left three and a half yeah exactly 329 to go i wanted it so bad um they like is it that they don't use these guys in a way that allows them to score is it that they can't or is it both is did they build this team like hey the super duper important
Starting point is 00:36:08 guys are super duper important they're gonna score for us every freaking game because they're that good and we pay them to we're gonna put them in every position to do it um and the other guys yeah just don't fuck it up i think there's there's it's a combination of the two i have this max domi screenshot from last night mike johnson on the broadcast even yelled it you and in this situation you turn around and shoot for anybody listening it's max domi in the middle of the ice just uh who's on him jesse who's on him nobody he's just above the face off dot and nobody is around him on the ice there's two flames in front one leaf in front and what he does here is he turns and he skates up the ice in the zone and he goes towards the boards and i think everybody's
Starting point is 00:36:52 instinct on this team is pass first especially max domey like he is in a prime position to just shoot a puck and he doesn't turn face the net at all because his mind doesn't go to i have to shoot the puck and how many guys on this team default to that like i'm not gonna shoot and i think it's a pressure like i'm okay head up look for you're on a line with matthews and nice head up the nye scored his 20th last night the other one's austin matthews head up look for it but don't you dare shoot this puck now there's the funny thing about this this play here if i can't play the video or anything but this ends in a max domi shot yes because max domi comes around and then he finds austin and max domi goes to around the blue line then he comes back into the the
Starting point is 00:37:40 center of the zone and austin hits him again and then domi finally shoots yeah so austin had to feed him back the puck to get this shot off of his stick when Domi should have just shot it initially you know how Robertson couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and then but then he got hot he got and he got his confidence and like even though he hasn't scored in a little bit like he's playing really confidently I feel like Max is the exact opposite of that um like Robbie just keep shooting keep shooting and you'll find your way out of this and with every Max Domi shot I'm I'm like, I think you're making it worse. Don't ever shoot.
Starting point is 00:38:15 Don't ever shoot. You're ruining this by shooting. I don't know. I don't want to pick on the guy. I thought he played one of his best games of the year last night with Matthews. Well, yeah. I thought he was great. He was great in his role.
Starting point is 00:38:27 Which is complimentary. Yes, 100%. 100%. So I'm not, yeah, maybe this shouldn't be the day where we mock Max Domi. No, but I don't think it's one game. I think it's a long-term issue where nobody on this team outside of the top-paying guys are paid to score goals. You can't expect goals from anybody else on this team because they're not paid to do that. Yep.
Starting point is 00:38:52 That's a problem. Don't we have 27 ones? Yeah, that was a while ago. Wasn't that pre-COVID? Oh, it was a long time ago. But he's one of those players. Montreal. There are players just scurrying around the league where I'm like, how did you do that?
Starting point is 00:39:09 dude andre kuzmenko had 39 how the hell did you do that you had 39 that you're a killer don't get 28 in the 1819 season what that's a long time ago though it is i know but like didn't the leafs have grabner like two years out from him scoring like 30 or 40 you would know he scored like two how did you do that i look at uh i look at this team and like like it's just come up today that casey middle stat is apparently available and as obviously fans of people are like it's got to be ali there's another guy where i'm like he's he's an assist machine he's got a lot of points he is a good player good contract two more years at 575 but you imagine you have assist machine middle stat next to assist machine don't don't mean yeah
Starting point is 00:40:02 you need a finisher in that but the thing the thing about high-end centers who can score goals and also play defense and are great, they're not available. No. It's not something you just go and get. Brock Nelson is available, and I will say it right now. I would do Easton Cowan
Starting point is 00:40:15 if it came with a Brock Nelson extension. I would. I would do it. I would do it. And I know Toronto fans hate it. Easton Cowan for Brock Nelson? Well, there'd be more to that, but the centerpiece is sure.
Starting point is 00:40:25 Damn. I want an extension though. Would you say if it comes with an extension? Yeah, it has to come with an extension. Are you doing it, Steve? Here's the thing, Leaf fans. You want a center, right? Easton Cowan, great player.
Starting point is 00:40:37 Probably is a factor in the lineup next year, although we don't know how much. We don't know. What is Easton Cowan? What's he project to be? A potential solution to the scoring problem we're talking about right now. But Brock Nelson, to Adam's point,
Starting point is 00:40:49 is a 30-goal scorer right now. So it might even be a boat. I know. He scored 34 last season, 36 the year before. You don't want to give up Easton Cowan for a rental, but if in this scenario there's a built-in extension, yeah sorry the recent sorry bud caveat you are the new york islanders who are hot right now they're on fuego i think oh they're seven in a row they shouldn't be why you trade in brock nelson
Starting point is 00:41:15 they shouldn't be trading tony d'angelo norris take that dom decision oh my god it's a joke it's a joke um i i think what the contract i think that i think too like i want them to get a trade done like yesterday but the reality is as jesse points out there aren't a lot of sellers right now because there's not a lot of teams that are out no there's not a lot of teams that stink and the islanders don't stink anymore no that's why the sharks trading granlin and cc is like all right we're gonna we're gonna sell we're gonna accumulate picks and first rounders while these teams are figuring out whether or not they stink speaking of which the saber should tear it down well we're getting to those that corny ass franchise next I I am so embarrassed for the Sabres but with
Starting point is 00:42:05 when it comes to the Leafs to the the play last night the play in Edmonton I have found guys looked a lot more like what the Leafs we got used to under Sheldon Keefe the Oilers make you open up their speed their ability to finish you could tell like it's in a game like that you want the Oilers like not having Matias at home is a factor it just is there that's a game of inches between the Leafs and the Oilers and not having a guy like Ekholm sucks, right? With the Flames, there's a talent differential. The Leafs are a more talented team. They didn't have Marner.
Starting point is 00:42:36 And they didn't have Marner. I don't even know if we've mentioned that yet. But I think everybody who looked at them on paper could tell you that. What I thought was interesting is they did play again a little bit more of an open style and
Starting point is 00:42:51 didn't let the defense lag. Where I thought they let themselves down a couple of times because i don't really think the flame should have had three goals last night but you give a team two five on three yes and they're gonna score and especially for the length of the five on threes if you didn't see the game last night these five on threes weren't short they were like uh somebody got a penalty i think was timmons and then mccabe puts it out eight seconds later and he gets a delay of game so it's a minute 52 joseph wall has allowed six goals over the past two games and i don't know if there's a bad one among them i
Starting point is 00:43:26 I totally agree with that. What are you supposed to do? I'm a Simon Benoit defender. I don't care what his advanced stats say. I think he is a valuable depth piece on this team, especially at the money they're paying. But when you cross-check somebody in the head on a non-play... He might get fined in the middle of the show.
Starting point is 00:43:46 He might. He's lucky it was two. It leads to more mistakes, which led to the next penalty the Leafs got, which then put them down 5-on-3 again. simon benoit from the start of this year has been bad penalty magnet and we've talked about the fact that he's had a tight whistle this year from the refs fine always does but uh that is a absolute like there is no way unless it's the playoffs that that is not a penalty and i don't i don't
Starting point is 00:44:15 know what i don't know what the team needs to do to sit this guy down and go simon you don't need to do that you don't need to do stupid shit it's you got your extension you got your extension you're fine you're a millionaire yes we when we all like you yeah you play more games than you don't but i i will say this like if we're looking ahead to the deadline like we're a little tunnel vision with the third line center uh they probably need another right d that'd be nice okay so So if we want to set it up where it's righty, righty, righty, lefty, lefty, lefty, so that would give us right side of Tanev, new guy, and one of Hockenpah, Timmons, or Myers.
Starting point is 00:45:01 And then the left side would be McCabe, Riley with new guy, and OEL. That puts Benoit on the outside. especially if you're cross-checking people in the head when you don't need to yeah like now he's a great i think he's a luxury as a seventh d yes i agree but that if i'm brad for living that's probably what i try to do is make him into that yeah that's the i was hoping for him after that extension that you know last year he had a solid solid year uh by his standards and you go okay i want him to take a step forward this year i think what's impeding that step forward is the amount of just penalties he doesn't need to take like you look at the types of penalty it'd be one thing
Starting point is 00:45:50 if he's like out there fighting and he's getting a bunch of five minutes and his pims are going up or whatever that the types of penalties he takes are dumb they're just dumb honey and i and i like this guy how many coaches has he had well he had uh was it dallas eakins in in anaheim i think he might have been eek eakins cronin keith barubi yeah the kid's 24 okay 25 yeah cool no no i know you don't need to take you don't need to take holding penalties you don't need to cry you don't need to take uh uh his heist like the the the slashing or the hooking or that stupid i don't care i'm trying to explain the problem but like it's still a problem he's the problem steve yes put your get your stick under control yeah don't get out of position your job as a depth defenseman
Starting point is 00:46:37 always be in position games a little too fast for him sometimes yeah it's not great it's not great not great that's probably an upgrade i would do dude your left side's mccabe riley oel i'll get over it yeah i promise i'll get over it like yeah you just need maybe one more right shot you're right so we're not advocating for myers or murmus to get in there um i was actually wondering about Mermis maybe Thursday against Seattle but like I I have no idea like how he's been with the Marlies this is a guy he played over 50 games with the Wild last year um NHLer I mean the trajectory is a lot like Benoit that like when they got him it's like they're trying to get the all right who's the next Benoit he's older um I think this is the time of year you see
Starting point is 00:47:32 what you have but maybe they decide and there's two games before the four nation face off let's not go reinventing the wheel let's just make sure everyone gets out of here unscathed do you think marshall or if i should get a shot god can he finally they haven't used him at all this season as a hostage it's oh no i i yeah i want to see him get in there but like yeah i i'd like to see him get in there i would if and and who cares about anyone's feelings if 26 year old Steve Dangle was still doing LFRs right now I think we'd get free Marshall or five videos
Starting point is 00:48:07 yeah 100% 100% listen you make content for a living about a team 82 games a year you start finding weird crutches and I used to be a huge I'm
Starting point is 00:48:23 so friggin smart because I know about this Marley's guy I used to be a huge advocate for just you wait they call up tim stapleton they're gonna make the playoffs this is this is the key to this team tim stapleton it would be marsha rafai or alex steves we'd get again use alex steves videos i was weirdly protective of brendan leipzig sorry sorry about that um yeah swing and a miss steve i still think they should give steves a shot but um yeah yeah you have an abundance of like refi you signed refi to a three-year extension the fuck like i see him get
Starting point is 00:49:06 him in there whenever i get the opportunity to go to practices he's always out there uh as like one of the last people out on the extra ice you know afterwards when everybody's done practicing he's out there with the coaches out there with the other scratches and just practicing all the time not playing games but now i think he's back down with the marley so yeah that's like taylor hall hasn't signed a contract as long as marshall refi in like half a decade like yeah um yeah no i'd like to see him getting there i'd like to see them try different guys but you got it's also two road games i don't know just get to the break get to the break oh yeah yeah but that's why it's kind of interesting like why wouldn't you give marshall refi a shot before the break yeah they'd
Starting point is 00:49:50 have to call him back up and then do all that oh yeah he's not gonna get the chance okay so who is with the team now right now it's myers and murmurs oh okay they said refi back down so yeah yeah i just think that but he was up for like months doing nothing yeah how many games is it how many professional hockey games is marshall hashtag free marshall refi free refi free marshall get him in there yeah he's got he played two games uh with the leafs last season that's it i liked him that's it like we can't we can't didn't want to in one of those games and you play like four minutes too like it was just keep did but what a four minute what a four minutes it was it was crazy like we can't just see what he has at some point no or any of those
Starting point is 00:50:37 two games and now i don't know i mean hell put myers back in he hasn't played for i think over a week i don't know whatever like i'm not gonna i'm not gonna get bogged down by this no but i think it lends to adam's point in that if if ben was out there taking a bunch of penalties you have extra defensemen who are in that same category as him as replaceable d replacement level defensemen try out these three other gentlemen that you have he he hasn't um he should have the same relationship with his spot in the lineup that timmons and myers do where it's it's not secure he makes way more mistakes than either of those guys and Myers is paying for it right now Ben was not so I don't know I would like to see someone else get a shot um I I want to uh I
Starting point is 00:51:32 want to talk about the Buffalo Sabres last night can I do William Nylander thing before we oh yeah William Nylander you asked about shot deception sometimes hockey is a very simple game yet very complex this is william neilander fooling dustin wolf he's on his outside leg his right leg and dustin wolf is sliding to the wrong post because william neilander looks like he's gonna shoot to the walker side of dustin wolf so dustin wolf slides that way and william neilander is able to wait so long that he just goes to the other angle where dustin wolf did not slide and this is something he's done consistently every single time he's on his break on a breakaway i have this one where he did it to Jonas Johansson of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Starting point is 00:52:17 So William Nylander is coming up on the breakaway. He pretends to go the other way before his shot, and Johansson slides the completely other way, drops down his knee, and William Nylander just shoots to the empty side, and it's a goal. He's just too good at being deceptive at his shot. Wait, that's him shooting to the blockers.
Starting point is 00:52:36 Yeah. Yeah, so this time. So, like, you don't even. No, so that's what I'm trying to illustrate. Damn. It's so complex in that and simple. He just shoots to the other side because goalies think he's going one way by what he's doing with his body, and he just picks the other side.
Starting point is 00:52:50 Johansson slides. He drops down his blocker to the glove side because that's where it looks like Willie's going to go based on how he's shooting the puck, and Willie goes short side. And that's a relatively new thing for him. Yes. I don't need to read the scouting report on you. You need to read the scouting report on me.
Starting point is 00:53:09 I think it has more to do with the fact that what Willie's doing is he's triggering a fundamental human thing. It doesn't matter who the goalie is. What you're doing in that situation is you can go left, you can go right, or you can hold and make the goalie come across and go five. He looks like he's faking shot to send a backhand pass. That's what it looks like to me.
Starting point is 00:53:33 And that's the thing, right? What Willie's doing is it's not really about the style of goaltender you are at that point. It's about being a human being and making you guess. and when when he gets them to commit the second they commit he shoots he's also got drop as an option and it would be more convincing if i think that's patches had his stick on the ice like yeah he doesn't need it it's just like lorenz like lorenz is like i'm not getting this puck back go nuts bobby willie willie doesn't need to pass that puck as soon as it's on his stick he's gonna
Starting point is 00:54:05 score he's he's one of the best scorers in the league right now and it's it's amazing to watch it's so cool that he's a Toronto Maple Leaf that's all I want to say but would you rather have Nick Ritchie and Brandon Montour that was a proposed trade by Nick Kiprios in 2017 2018
Starting point is 00:54:23 a lot of people sent it to me last night and a lot of people were saying if the Leafs had signed Jimmy Vesey that summer because remember he was available that one of Marner and Nylander would have been gone and I'm like I don't think that's true from everything we know about the Leafs organization
Starting point is 00:54:40 Like William Nylander was a Brendan Shanahan choice. He overruled his own scouting staff and said, and then proceeded to fire them all later that summer. That is the story. Yes. And I've heard that from multiple people. I know. Definitely not because him and Michael were teammates.
Starting point is 00:54:57 No, no, I don't really not because of that. You know what? I don't care why it was. He was right. Yeah. Shani,
Starting point is 00:55:03 his flowers were hard. He was right. He was right. But you know, maybe his buddy told him to draft his kid. I don't care. give it give it to him now uh i want to talk about this is really listen if your dog brings you a gold ingot because he thinks it's a stick you take it all right and you don't ask questions
Starting point is 00:55:19 jesse i want you to bring this up um i'm going to set this segment up with uh the buffalo sabers allowed stephan nason to get away with crushing um uh thompson and you know the thing about it is that it was a clean hit. The NHL ruled it that way. It was a hit to the head, but he was bent over, and Nason, obviously, it wasn't like a targeted head shot.
Starting point is 00:55:45 It was a clean hit, but you don't know that at the time. Right. And Nason did get a match penalty. And whether or not the hit is clean, as Steve says, doesn't really matter. It's your best player.
Starting point is 00:55:57 It's a former 40-goal scorer, and he's lying in a puddle on the ice. And the Sabres skated around and picked their nose. And for the rest of the game, even though nason was thrown out they didn't do anything and lindy ruff gets on the microphone and goes well you can grab someone else and it led to what we saw last night now the sabers won okay but what i saw to me i felt embarrassed by i was actually i i don't get last night
Starting point is 00:56:28 secondhand embarrassed by by much in hockey like unless it's like oh patrick stefan's got an empty net and he didn't score on it you know like that's embarrassing right uh you remember that one where then the oilers came back and scored yes yes yes um this thing that that that they did no we're tough so you have dennis gilbert who didn't take a shift after thompson got hit against new jersey denny gilbert oh no it's not no i'm just dennis freaking gilbert i'm kidding by the way dennis gilbert is it jesse i'm kidding dennis gilbert didn't take a shift after thompson was hit so he couldn't grab anybody um but they line gilbert and matthew freaking olivier up at the center ice at the start of the game just fed him and and by the way what's crazy about this if you if you
Starting point is 00:57:21 don't if you've not been paying attention to the columbus blue jackets because you've been paying attention your own team you can't be faulted for that matthew olivier is the biggest heavyweight in the league right now and he scores so gilbert and olivier go head to head at the start of the columbus game sabers are wearing their black jerseys they're at home in front of the fans and you hate this gilbert proceeds to lose this fight and it doesn't mean that gilbert didn't put in a good effort because i think he did but let me ask a good effort let me ask you something about his ass kick but let me ask you something sure oh you yeah it's i mean it's matthew olivier right what are you doing what are you doing i'll tell you hold on let me finish the question okay
Starting point is 00:58:03 what okay the columbus blue jackets didn't hit thompson yes the columbus blue jackets didn't hit him the columbus blue jackets far as i know were not even in town when thompson got hit they hadn't even boarded the airplane got it and so to show yourselves and i think your fans and your media too that you're tough and we do stand up for our guys we're gonna fight the next team i won't fight the team that wrecked my top guy i'm gonna fight the next team and then on top of that you'll lose the fight now i know they won the game columbus is a good team they're not a great team well new jersey is a great team they're a team that's and they're and new jersey's a little bit soft but you know who's softer even after last night's fight the buffalo sabers what an
Starting point is 00:58:55 embarrassment a staged fight to start the game so that you can feel good about leaving your teammate in a puddle on the ice the previous game what a joke to quote lindy lindy ruff what a joke uh from the 98 playoffs against toronto absolute embarrassment i can't believe that this even happened and that anybody could walk away from that situation and go you know what we sure sent a message no you didn't no you didn't you're still corny you're still soft and Matthew Olivier still kicked your ass and here's the thing is it that the Buffalo Sabres didn't want to or is it that they don't have the personality I think they don't have the personnel I don't think they have any I think they got a guy's a bunch of guys big for nothing get out of here you don't think mate I
Starting point is 00:59:44 I don't know if Rasmus Dahlin's going to do it. I don't know if Owen Power's going to do it. Who's going to do it? Dennis Gilbert, apparently, the next game. This was the thing. And listen, Adam, I don't think you're wrong. I don't think you're wrong at all. But I have a different spin on it.
Starting point is 00:59:59 Okay. I think this could be what changes things for the Sabres. I know. Okay. I know. Great. Listen, there's no reason to think that. But you have one.
Starting point is 01:00:10 So tell us. they got embarrassed in a way like listen teams lose games teams lose games teams have bad seasons these guys as professionals whether they've been with the sabers for a long time or not they've probably experienced some bad seasons they probably experienced some good seasons ebbs and flows comes and goes whatever whatever the whole league is calling you soft you are that's well i know but that's embarrassing and you got lindy ruff probably parroting that to you in far more crass terms behind closed doors i saw craig rive former buffalo saber now radio announcer right speculating that i think it was mikhail samuelson wasn't he was he was scratched because he was on
Starting point is 01:00:56 the ice and didn't fight supposedly there's a legitimate injury there but then you see everyone speculating like yeah maybe it's a little bit of this maybe it's a little bit of that um guys who are injured are not expected to fight and they don't get in trouble for it no and i'll give you a great example as long as we're talking about guys named gilbert greg gilbert um used to be head coach of the toronto marlies there was a ahl a guy i don't even remember who the game was against and he tried to fight daryl boyce who was playing but had a busted hand yeah so couldn't fight back and well and he said he swore into the microphone it like he didn't mean to he caught himself he goes he's gotta he's gotta bust a digit why the fuck would he fight because his
Starting point is 01:01:39 hand was messed up so whether Samuelson is being punished for not fighting or Lindy Ruff is going all right if you can't fight if you're worried about it then that means you're not fit to play you can't play I don't think the Sabres are going to turn it around and make the playoffs because of this but something has to change and it's got to start with pride in absence of talent so dennis gilbert's your answer you guys it's not a great answer skated around and picked your nose after that hit yeah and you did nothing the rest of the game too it's not just the immediate aftermath it's not just stefan nason it's it's and lindy ruff said this in the press conference he said you can grab someone else too and and so they did nothing steve nothing hold on let me finish no no
Starting point is 01:02:24 They did nothing. And then they're like, you know what? Our solution is we'll get them next game, and it's going to be Dennis Gilbert? What are you talking about? So they line up. That is not toughness. That just shows that you're looking.
Starting point is 01:02:39 All the guys, all that talent, all those big bodies looking down the dressing room was like, Dennis, can you handle this for us? Because this is hard. No, no. This is too hard. See, you're getting there. You're getting there, Adam. You're getting there.
Starting point is 01:02:50 This is bad. They take. It is bad. It is bad. But wait a sec. so they take you know hey owen can you go do this uh i make like a bajillion dollars i don't really think i want to actually hey dennis who's 28 from buffalo journeyman he's played six uh 19 games this year how much longer is he going to be in the league i don't know
Starting point is 01:03:17 we're gonna send you out there in front of our home fans and we're gonna feed you to matthew olivier it's it's a sign to the fans i think i like i almost look at it like an apology to the fans on behalf of the team but the antics the the theatrics you just had that oh dennis can you go do this man i almost wonder if it's lindy ruff using dennis gilbert to humiliate the rest of the team okay because think of how shitty you must feel as a saber watching this poor guy get fed to matthew olivier in a staged fight get fed to him off the opening draw and you know that they had a chat at center ice and warm-up going listen i need to fight you tonight can you give you fight off the top and olivier was kind enough to hand him that ass beating now what i think is
Starting point is 01:04:13 being lost in this conversation is how did the sabers reward the fans and gilbert they won they won right so again is a lot of it ridiculous theatrics um yeah does it make up for the complete inaction of the the the devil's game absolutely not is it a start i think it is we'll see it is pathetic i don't believe it i think they're pathetic and i think it's not all their fault well i think you had no i i think it can be both you had a bad shitty start to the season your gm bitch to the media about how hard it was not having palm trees boohoo kevin adams you're making millions of dollars figure it out yeah you knew when you signed the contract that it's buffalo not exactly a free agents paradise so figure it out kevin you wanted the job you
Starting point is 01:05:06 know what kevin you could have said i don't want the job i can't figure this out i need a place with palm trees to be able to bring free agents in could have done that and the fans in the media let them hear it then you have uh terry pagula come into the dressing room and tell the guys hey you know what i know you're having a tough season we're not going to help we're not going making any trades uh don't expect anything so i don't really if i am a sabers player and i'm like well this season's kind of shot what about and they're and they're clearly not committed what about if i didn't fight and saved my knuckles and my fingers and my wrists and i uh just try to make it to next season did you catch the tsn panel talk about cousins well yeah he's available
Starting point is 01:05:51 yeah i well sort of he's available for a a player for player trade that wasn't the impression i got the impression i got was the sabers want him he fits there again there was a sense of confusion as to why he would even be available from the panel something like 20 teams have called um of course they have why what are they doing yep that i don't understand that at all so at some point even if it's ceremonial if it's just a gesture this team their management has to do something for the guys who are currently here to be like here's why it's worth it to be a sabre going forward because it's it's pathetic right now and i think last night feeding dennis gilbert to matthew olivier was a wake-up call what i'd love to know is how much time did gilbert play
Starting point is 01:06:50 in this game good question we can look that up what i will say is i hope they took him for dinner afterwards oh fuck or tonight yeah somewhere that serves like a nice uh like bisque a nice pacific rim bowl is something real easy to chew Gilbert played eight minutes and 41 seconds honestly that is eight minutes and 39 seconds longer than I thought he had one point he had an assist he's a plus hey good for him there you go uh lost in this whole conversation the you mentioned the Buffalo Sabres won against the Columbus Blue Jackets they also beat the Devils that game where they didn't fight uh they also won their previous two games before that and the buffalo sabers are on a four-game winning streak soft so listen man i'm so excited for them to
Starting point is 01:07:41 finish sixth and with this four-game winning they are building momentum in the right a lot to hang their hats on i hope they get ahead of the detroit red wings all you can ask for is to win games in the right direction win games that are in front of you and you head in the right direction they're doing that currently and again i don't blame the players fully for this i think this is a management I think this is an ownership down issue and I think the fans know it right I think the fans know it they've been lobbying Pagoula for years to
Starting point is 01:08:05 please do something by the way it's looking like Jason Zucker might resign there he is it's interesting Cousins available Zucker on deal that's not sorry that doesn't go into next year expiring deal not available
Starting point is 01:08:22 because I think they like his character and what he brings to the room and the leadership he brings veteran presence and I think for zucker he's been bounced around it's like pittsburgh dallas was it dallas minnesota zucker uh he's been all over the place and so i think he's probably like hey i found a home and uh i'm kind of happy to just be here he was a coyote he was a coyote yeah so here we go we got minnesota pittsburgh arizona nashville buffalo and that's by the way since 22 23 it's four different teams penguins coyotes predator sabers here's much here's part of why i think i'm right with gilbert
Starting point is 01:08:59 okay um and i think this applies to cousins is the sabers um like just any story i've ever heard about them um and the way they run things like from the top they're weird they're freaking weird yeah they are like they are i'm not comfortable sharing particulars they're just weird and they do things in a really weird way and the insiders confusion at the dylan cousin stuff to me says it's all bullshit the sabers are putting this out there to try to motivate him because they're weird it's exactly the sort of weird thing they would do now that's me being kind the mean thing would be if they actually traded the guy for no good reason i don't understand that i again from the person i talked to who has a little bit insight on this they said apples to apples trade i don't
Starting point is 01:09:56 know what the apples to apples trade is unless you're making it with vancouver and it's elise petterson and that's not apples to apples because you'd have to add to that to get petterson i would think yeah yes like a lot a lot but they seem to you know they seem to really want him they were one of the teams that were really hot on Patterson. Calgary was rumored to be in on Cousins. That would make a lot of sense. It just depends what goes back to Buffalo.
Starting point is 01:10:25 I can't think of anything. What on the roster? I can't think of anything that makes sense. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th,

Starting point is 01:11:32 Never a bad time to check it out. I will say this. Also, don't wait for it to be critical. No. no no we always kind of say that don't wait for it to be like oh everything is falling apart you know sometimes you could just be going along normally and go i just don't know how to solve this one thing and that third party that therapist element helps you kind of work through that your decision making i think gets better i think your ability to process emotions get
Starting point is 01:12:01 gets better because you get to step outside of yourself and the great thing is you can do it with better help and you can do it on your schedule 24 hours a day seven days a week you get matched with somebody in 48 hours if you don't like that person it doesn't you don't vibe with them whatever you can switch it up we have weird schedules how do you guys feel about weird schedules and your therapist working around that it's pretty good right and it's a handy thing steve have you ever considered potentially booking with better help after a leafs playoff loss like that night get them on the phone put them on lfr hey can you do a little jump on can you listen to me record this and tell me if it's healthy
Starting point is 01:12:37 here's the deal we want you to give it a shot uh and find out just how much it can change your life because it changed all of ours betterhelp.com stp uh and uh today uh we're gonna give you 10% off your first month that's betterhelp.com stp betterhelp.com stp alexander ovechkin scored another goal last night empty netter uh beat the florida panthers uh and he's just that much closer to wayne gretzky and i just know here's the thing that you know here's what's nuts about ob the capitals are in first place in the eastern conference ob is about to get a week and a half off and i just feel like the the washington capitals are a team primed i know they've been great all year but does it not feel like these guys will probably get really hot after the four
Starting point is 01:13:29 nations they'll be completely refreshed not a lot of their guys are going which isn't like an insult to them they're just they're not like you know the leafs have three guys it would have been four if hawk and paw was going right it's funny you're thinking about it that way because i think there's a bunch of teams dreading the four nation face off why well okay like take for example the islanders okay who haven't been in a playoff spot all year but they're shit hot and you're not going to play any games for what is it 12 days yeah but the islanders are a marginal team the capitals are really good i'm using them as an example what if this like i think you you gotta you gotta have a little screw loose right to to be at this level in athletics and i wonder if
Starting point is 01:14:14 there's anyone going this is this is gonna this might screw up our momentum a little bit here now for a team with as many older guys as the caps this is probably good yeah ovi yeah i got him arrest uh wilson i don't know if he fits in that conversation anymore john carlson um yeah get all those guys arrest but it's i think it's going to be fascinating when we come out of the four-nation face-off break, the contrast between teams before and after. Because I think some teams are going to thrive, just like Adam said.
Starting point is 01:14:49 Some of them are going to tank. It's also not great for guys like Mitch Marner, who had to miss last night's game, apparently for stiffness or whatever, nothing serious. And then you go and maybe, okay, he plays tomorrow against Seattle or he plays against Vancouver,
Starting point is 01:15:07 and he's healthy enough to play. but he's clearly dealing with something. And then now you're throwing him out there for hopefully, what, five games Canada might play? He's got to play for Team Canada in one week. He's got to play four games for Team Canada. It's got to be the highest level you're going to compete. You can't half-ass this.
Starting point is 01:15:27 And he's a little bit injured. How's your leg? Okay, well, anyway, you're going to play with Connor McDavid. Yeah, this isn't great for a made-up tournament that in the surface doesn't really mean anything you know so i don't know it's i see i could see a lot of guys being wishy-washy now that it's here and it's real maybe you're hyped about in october maybe you're hyped about in december when you got picked but now that it's here you're probably like i want to be ready for the playoffs i kind of think a lot of players are going to miss
Starting point is 01:15:57 their final game before the uh four nation face off and just take a breather why not yeah why not true uh are we gonna see a washington capitals in the bubble just decommit to the four nations and we see like team finland like not try because they all want to go back i i don't think so i don't think so matthew kachuk was interviewed by chris johnson yesterday and he is like buzzing about this tournament he says it's it's not this is not an all-star game like this is legit we're we're fired up we're ready to go um i know that like a couple of people on the radio have said like hey you know i wouldn't be shocked to see a bunch of guys pull out of this tournament i don't think they're looking at it like that again if you get to this level level of athletics you got
Starting point is 01:16:40 to kind of have a screw loose and to them they're going well um it's just four extra games well right yeah but that's what they're gonna tell you're fighting for everything you're fighting for every centimeter go canada uh you're fighting for every centimeter um every millimeter and if you're four games more tired than everyone else and you're dealing with something it could be a problem like that's why i think a 38 year old refrigerator named alexander ovechkin is going to benefit from this oh he's gonna and one like think of alex petrangelo yeah like he pulls out of the tournament and people are like oh and then he plays 26 minutes the next night well maybe part of the reason he was able to do that is he can mentally decommit from this other thing like okay
Starting point is 01:17:28 i gotta worry about this i gotta worry i'm dealing with this i'm dealing with that like all these guys get worked on more than a race car um and now he doesn't have to worry as much and he's going to be playing 22 20 minutes a night for canada they're going to be running him out there one of their best defensemen so now if he if he had went so now you're taking away 20 plus 20 plus 20 plus 20 if he's playing all those all four games that like that much so that's a lot off of a season for a guy who's not 25 anymore and no one's going to want to hear this but which team's paying him yeah team actually has things that matter going on the vegas golden knights which team's paying him i still think i i still think that he will watch that tournament and wish he
Starting point is 01:18:14 was there i do i think these guys are really excited a lot remember a lot of these guys petrangelo's done it we we went over this he's won a gold medal he's done it he's won a cup a lot of these younger guys they've never since the world juniors they haven't put on their i think he has i think it's different it's different for younger guys yeah like they have less to deal with they are younger their bodies will bounce back quicker for these for these guys in their mid-30s it's going to be trickier or even early 30s some of these guys have played in an international tournament but never for a country yeah like matthews for the young guns yeah like Well, obviously, he did World Juniors, and then has he even been to a World Championship?
Starting point is 01:18:54 Well, and when he played for the Young Guns, he hadn't played in the NHL yet. He hadn't played in an NHL game. Sidney Crosby, by the way, for Team Canada, after getting mixed up with a weird hit last night, missing practice today. Oh, but he returned to the game, though. So this is, all right. Should I practice today or shouldn't I? I got the Four Nations coming up. You know what?
Starting point is 01:19:17 I'm skipping this one. we'll see we'll see uh casey middlestat is apparently available from the colorado avalanche this is the guy that they brought in to sort of be the second line center we have sort of mentioned it earlier but much like dylan cousins 26 years old hasn't found the fit maybe in colorado is really itchy this year they're like we're gonna revamp everything our entire uh goalie tandem um i'm curious about what an expected return for a guy like that would be like it's got to be pretty solid he's on i think he's got a few years left on the deal if i'll look it up on puckpedia it has to be a hockey trade like cal uh calgary colorado is not in this for futures
Starting point is 01:20:00 575 i could see it being like a three-way deal where they get futures and then flip them for something they can use like not every team that is uh going after casey metal stat is you know necessarily uh going to be like a seller or buyer yep whatever i i think it's i think it's you gotta if you're colorado you're trying to win a cup still you gotta get a player they've moved a lot of money like obviously with ranton and moving obviously they brought in natchez and Drury, if they move Middlestat, does that mean one of Natushkin or
Starting point is 01:20:39 Landeskog is maybe potentially ready to come back? You know, I'm getting kind of... I don't know. Maybe it's cruel to say I'm getting sick of the Landeskog stuff. It doesn't seem like he's going to.
Starting point is 01:20:56 Respectfully to him. It doesn't. Every scenario with the Avalanche, I'm going to treat it like he's never coming off LTIR because until he does, that's how you got to conduct business. I think the avalanche know what's going on and I think they're keeping it close to the vest. We haven't really heard anything about it, but like for me, I'm, I'm looking at external options until we hear that he's coming back. Now what I could see them doing, and it would be crazy how important like who's the fourth line left winger on the avalanche right now i can today
Starting point is 01:21:33 uh kiviranta kiviranta yeah oh see that's interesting because he's had some good playoff games but you can put landis kog game one of the playoffs fourth line left wing yeah yeah that's what i've been advocating for landis kog this whole time he's not coming back during the regular season throw him wherever you want during the playoffs if that's when he wants to come back and Bettman flips his lid, and they do something with the LTIR rules. I don't know. That's an enormous risk for all involved.
Starting point is 01:22:07 But, eh. I mean, it's the only... Based on the way Colorado's operating, to me, it's the only thing that seems to make any sense. There's, like, what, 25 games left? Yeah, no. There's no logical reason to play them in the regular season and take up that cap space.
Starting point is 01:22:23 You hold on to it. You wait. natushkin's an interesting one because it seems like he's going to be ready well before the playoffs like he's not going to be ready until after four nations but um the setback he had in mid-january like probably like a week ago now um it's not wasn't supposed to be a long-term injury like he was supposed to be on his way back right now but now there's a setback so it seems like you can't really use that cap and he's not a center and middle stat is right so that that i brought him up because i thought money is it a money for the cap space thing at
Starting point is 01:22:52 the deadline is kind of how I'm thinking like you'll probably you'll need the space on the team to bring him back right little set thing is I think is we can just we can do better well and it seems like I looked at that story today and I thought that's that's the Colorado um bar that other teams don't have like Bo and Byron it's like you can't cut it here bye-bye uh there are guys that they're like you're do you play the the Nathan are you are you at that line like can you can you stick to what we do here or can you not and oh kent johnson i i know the sabers won this game but just sent byram to the shadow realm with that backhander oh my god yeah oh and it's i just for for me in colorado it's like there's like a personality fit and there's
Starting point is 01:23:41 an effort fit and i think that it's it it wouldn't be long if you weren't putting in 100 before somebody came over and talked to you whether that's the coach whether that's the captain kale mccarr probably miko rantanen maybe back when he was there okay you know what you know what sucks because this would never happen but middle stat for uh okay who's a guy we could slot in at second line center and hopefully he grows into the role oh dylan cousins but they're not trading middle stat back to buffalo no no no two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself

Starting point is 01:25:01 We didn't get to this last show, and I thought it was important to just at least hit on. Ryan Hartman suspended 10 games for basically dropping Tim Stutzel's head right into the ice. It's a DDT. Jake the Snake Roberts. I know that Hartman's got an edge. I haven't seen anything like that. No, he's a greaseball. That was his fifth suspension. And you know what?
Starting point is 01:25:24 And I can't remember if we talked about this on the show or not. He high-sticked Cole Perfetti in the face off a face-off. And supposedly Perfetti was miked up and uh said that Hartman told him he did it on purpose oh so what Hartman has learned is even though I've been suspended a bunch of times because I'm a meathead I can get away with this because he I don't think he was punished for that he might have got a fine like on top of these five suspensions he's also been fined I'm pretty sure um Matt Rempe got eight games because the league said that's enough.
Starting point is 01:26:11 But they're trying to teach a young guy a lesson moving forward. Hey, you've been suspended, what is it, twice in a 40-game career or something like that? That's enough, and we're teaching you a lesson going forward. With Hartman, I don't know what lesson you're trying to teach him that you haven't already tried to explain to him. So what people aren't understanding about this, it's not just the amount of games 10 which is a lot it's the most in i think seven years but it's
Starting point is 01:26:41 not unprecedented the dude because he's a repeat offender and jesse mitt do you know how these rules work a little bit better than i do like what's that well uh repeat offenders get fined more of their salary than others yeah if you if you if you fall in the repeat offender window your your last suspension then you're it then the amount you get taken off your salary is more yes but you're allowed to take into account a player's entire history right so mcdavid um was suspended three games he lost something it was like just under 200 000 that's a guy who makes 12 and a half million ryan hartman is losing almost half a million four hundred and something thousand dollars yeah so that'll get his attention and if he gets suspended again after this like we haven't seen
Starting point is 01:27:35 anyone like Rafi Torres since Rafi Torres where the league basically said all right you can't play in the NHL and yeah like that's enough um I wonder how much career Ryan Hartman who's not a bad player I wonder how much career he's got left if he gets suspended again like this is when was last time I think the official ruling was roughing he was suspended for roughing it's intent to injure he tried to injure a person right there's like even like bad hits like Tom Wilson was like such a pariah for so long like I think he was trying to lay devastating hits um cross the line for sure broke the rules for sure did he mean to like injure not hurt there's a difference between hurt and injure right like what ryan reeves said earlier this season he's going out there and
Starting point is 01:28:32 trying to trying to hurt guys yep he's he's not hitting them for something to do he's trying to have an impact on the game but trying to injure a player is something hockey players are rarely accused of and then punished for punished for that's exactly what he did i don't know what you're trying to do to tim stutzela other than injure him and take him out of the game um you you're so lucky you're so lucky tim stutzela got up from that because if he doesn't you're looking at 20 and a mil there's no way he gets he only gets only gets 10 for his fifth suspension and Tim Stutzla's lying motionless on the ice. No.
Starting point is 01:29:22 No, you get a Dennis Weidman type, you know, when Dennis Weidman hit the ref. Dennis Weidman got, I would think it was 21 games? Yeah. Then it was backed off to 10 or something, but he'd already not played. Yeah, like, I don't, maybe it's because Ryan Hartman's not that big of a name
Starting point is 01:29:35 or something, but, like, he's got, I think, the worst rap sheet in the NHL right now. Yeah, Ryan Hartman, the way he plays, like, he doesn't have a place in the NHL for me. Like, the next incident doesn't have to be anything. Like, right now, he's earned that medal of we don't need you in this league just based on the way he's been, what he's been fined for and the suspensions that he's gotten down. Like, it's been seven fines, five suspensions now. And the NHL Department of Player Safety made a note in their video, and they said that every 60 games, this player receives some sort of supplemental discipline.
Starting point is 01:30:13 Wow. They said it blatantly, and they're sick of his shit. Less than every season. Less than every single, we have to either fine you or suspend you for something. And it's not that he's in cases where he's like a tough guy. He's like a Jacob Truba case where he's like hitting guys really on the borderline. He's blatantly trying to injure players consistently. And there's an incident where he slew-footed Leon Dreisaitl.
Starting point is 01:30:37 He slew-footed Alex Debrinkit. He checked Elias Pettersson's head into the boards back in the bubble. Cole Perfetti hit it, whacking him in the face off a face-off dot. And then you got this Tim Stutzla one. Like, he's collecting the infinity stones of injuring Canadian teams' players. It seems like throughout his career. It's been fabulous to watch. But this is a guy.
Starting point is 01:30:58 The Leafs are done playing Minnesota, right? They're next up. Oh, no. But consistently in his career, he's trying to injure other humans on the ice. And it's not even, like, humans at this point or the other players at this point. it's also the referees he was suspended three games for throwing his stick at a referee i don't even remember that one you can just keep going down the list of things that ryan hartman has done in his career and they're all trying to deliberately hurt other people in non-hockey
Starting point is 01:31:28 ways that's what he does and he doesn't have a place in this game 10 games isn't enough if we're being honest no and he's a valuable player he scores he has points no he's not and and i'm and i'm gonna throw the book at him right now so 34 goals is his career high that was a few years ago he got 21 last year and 45 points last year career high 65 points guess what he's played 48 games this season he's got seven goals 10 assists 17 points he's a team worst minus eight and he's way overpaid and now he uh uh i don't know how this affects the wilds cap situation but like when a player gets suspended for 10 games it's not like you put them on ltir cap relief no it just sits there right he is an enormous drag on the minnesota wild this season who are having an
Starting point is 01:32:19 otherwise great season and he's out there trying to injure guys like if i'm uh michael and lauer i'm i'm probably a big reason why he got 10 games i'm personally calling the department of player safety and going dude every single game we are fighting for our playoff lives and millions of dollars of home game revenue here and this guy just tried to take out our top forward because why he's trying to hurt him he's trying to it wasn't a hockey play pierre lebrun um i saw A TikTok clip, him and Gino Retta. As inconsistent as George Peros has been, one thing he said at a press conference years ago
Starting point is 01:33:06 was he wants to crack down on non-hockey plays. Like, this is a non-hockey play. What Morgan Rielly did... Non-hockey. It's a non-hockey play. David Perron on Artem Zub. It's a non-hockey play. Yeah, it was the wrong guy, too.
Starting point is 01:33:23 And it was the wrong guy. And now he's playing there. Right? so if you look historically at the biggest suspensions peros has handed out uh he has time for things that all right this was bad but i could see what you're what you were trying yeah he has time for that when it's just a guy trying to injure somebody else beat it which is a nice change i'll give peros that not a fan but well we're aligned on something yeah right we got to find common ground with you know at some point hopefully well i mean if you injure if you injure
Starting point is 01:33:57 a guy in a hockey game trying to play hockey there's a difference there's a difference i mean stefan nason yes yes brian hartman's he doesn't do that no he he does what he wants and it's injured guys outside of the game of hockey no one's no one wants to hear this and i know what i'm going to get called for suggesting this if you attempt to injure someone even if it's during an nhl game and it's got nothing to do with the hockey being played why is that not just assault steve what no nhl players have been charged with assault i know on ice i know that before far more extreme examples than even that and and we're we're only saying this because stutzler got up I remember only saying this because you got it.
Starting point is 01:34:46 I remember this. I would still disagree with you on that. I remember. Well, you know, in NBA games, NFL games, they throw straight up punches at each other. And that's assault anywhere else. But it's sports and it is different. And we have to ignore the NBA throws the book. It's it's yes.
Starting point is 01:35:00 They throw the book at them, but they're not charged with assault. That's a big, big difference, right? There's legal costs. There's, you know, years because it's years to process something like that, even if they don't even bring the charges to court. That's a completely different process. Now, one thing I will say is, you know, I remember that a former senator's owner actually trying to get somebody charged with assault. And that was Matt Cook.
Starting point is 01:35:22 Well, his skate did, I think, still accidentally sever Eric Carlson's Achilles tendon. Yeah, well, and that's another star player. And it's also a player who deserves no benefit of the doubt whatsoever in Matt Cook. Yeah. ECHL coach Matt Cook, by the way, I think up until this year. Oh, yeah. He was the Growlers coach, wasn't he? I didn't know that.
Starting point is 01:35:45 He was. That's right. Yeah. Ten games is a lot for the NHL, for the Department of Player Safety. It's the longest suspension for an on-ice incident against another player since Tom Wilson was suspended in September of 2018 for a check to the head. That was originally 18 games and then reduced to 14, I think it was, or something like that. It was reduced eventually, but it's still more than what Ryan Hartman got, but it's not enough for Ryan Hartman.
Starting point is 01:36:16 People might have forgot because he's been a little bit better behaved in recent years, but Tom Wilson's reign of terror in the NHL. It was a good run. Half a decade of dudes just getting brained. It was bad. Yep. Can we do the press conference? I think Steve needs to sleep.
Starting point is 01:36:36 We're going to wrap it? see you told me you told me do the press conference no you literally you asked it you asked again are we gonna do
