Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction. Wanna bet? Backhanding. S-D-P-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake. Well, I thought we would start today's show. There's a lot happening. There's a lot happening. True Living. What?
Starting point is 00:00:25 We got Dubas news, and we also have some Nashville news, and Dave's got some Stanley Cup props up already at Sports Interaction, so we got that as well. Brad Treliving's the new Leafs GM. Jim Treliving, actually, just Jim. Whoa, best kept secret in the sport. Yeah, no, who could have? Wow, they really dropped a bomb on us.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Holy. There was one guy at the party, and they picked the one guy. Man. It's crazy. If you were the last man on earth, I would pick you to be Leafs GM. And also, you're not the last man on earth. you're just the only man we currently unemployed identified at all you know you know i've been thinking about that and we're going to get into it more in a second but given that he's the only
Starting point is 00:01:06 somewhat successful candidate who is out of work he has a lot of leverage like he could probably ding them for he's probably been like you got to give me dubious money minimum whatever are we going to do this or not oh no we're getting no we can't get it now no that's a whole point one thing i need to say one thing i need to say is that yesterday was the 10th anniversary of the steve dangle podcast and i would just wanted to shout out my two friends jesse and steve uh for uh their enormous work and contributions over the last decade if you can believe it may 30th 2013 was our first episode third round of the playoffs um and uh we actually thought the leafs were good um they had just been eliminated by boston in you guessed it game
Starting point is 00:01:48 seven um and uh you know it became the summer of david clarkson um people forget that jonathan bernier dave boland uh you know we still like we still thought randy carlisle was a stanley cup winning coach i mean he still is but um there was there was a lot of you know the analytics versus non-analytics debates for just ramping up uh raging yeah it was uh it was an interesting time and then uh about uh what 14 months later i think 18 months later something like that the very tall and very quiet and extraordinarily well-dressed jesse blake joined us and the rest is history oh so and actually it was jesse that started the youtube channel part of it yes yeah we we didn't start like even irregularly uploading youtube clips until 2016 and i don't remember when
Starting point is 00:02:36 we started doing episodes like 18 19 oh like full episode episodes no we had started with uh full episodes right it wasn't i think we did yeah no we did big chunks it wasn't the full episode oh okay it was half an hour well because i remember yeah because the first video was sasky stewart it wasn't i remember that and it was in my house appearance no it was in the old fan 590 backup studio okay yeah now yeah adam i thought it was very interesting that you opened by saying you wanted to congratulate your friends steve and jesse um on 10 years and you did not congratulate yourself well i'm the king of self congratulating so what could it be well i just i just know you don't like making a big fuss uh-huh uh but jesse and i do so we're gonna don't hit me with
Starting point is 00:03:30 my coffee's ruined not a single piece of confetti in there i got three congrats buddy wow ow ow 10 years in confetti who gets to clean this up 10 years wow you i i was like i'm sitting here and i'm trying to carry that segment and i'm like i'm like are they not interested in the thing i feel like it's a big deal like i i felt like i felt like i'm like do they not maybe maybe i shouldn't care as much i thought it was a big deal i was just i was waiting for steve to pull out the thing he planned yeah i don't did you hear a big thump before we started recording no oh well anyway one of them jesse's confetti thing falling onto the floor because i shoddily taped it to the underside of the desk oh smart
Starting point is 00:04:28 okay yeah so listen i 10 years how do you feel about 10 years how do we feel about 10 years before we do all that can we acknowledge red shirt day oh yeah yeah sure so so uh steve why don't you take this one because it has to do with easter seals uh near and dear to your heart yes absolutely so i've told this story many times many ways uh but uh my family's an easter seals family um my sister has uh cerebral palsy among other uh uh issues and uh disabilities and we got to go to easter seals camps i think twice um and they were wonderful experiences um i've told the story uh several times i hate the beach yes yeah um because have you ever tried taking someone with a wheelchair to the beach oh i i can't even imagine it sucks and to this
Starting point is 00:05:20 to this day i'm still i'm not a good swimmer and i hate the beach so what the easter seals camps do is they uh provide families with a an inclusive um experience an accessible experience um that allows them to have experiences that maybe you take for granted uh as a family so you know we got to play on the beach and we got to do like water activities and things together as a family and i think my parents were were voted most cool the cool parents oh is that right that's uh yeah because they were at a i want to say it was like a rolling stones concert the night before we went to one of the camps and doug gilmore was sitting behind them they got good seats from my uncle that's pretty cool yeah yeah that's pretty good that's i mean the rolling stones too like that's
Starting point is 00:06:14 awesome your dad must have freaked out oh of course so uh these camps uh are not free um you know nothing is free so it's i believe 250 a person per day so it's a thousand dollars a day for a family of four uh to go to these camps and i mean it costs money to to run these camps so that's why i'm always it's so ridiculous having this conversation with confetti all over the place um we uh this that's why i'm so adamant about raising money for these families when uh the eric lindroth celebrity hockey classic comes around and red shirt day uh is about um you know promoting visibility um for uh the community that needs accessibility and uh jesse what does the official statement say uh yeah i'll read the little tweet from easter seals ontario they can
Starting point is 00:07:09 do it better yes today is red shirt day no i love hearing about uh your family and your upbringing why this matters so much to to you and the show uh today is red shirt day you can show your support by posting a selfie or a group photo of you with your friends classmates or colleagues all wearing red on social media with the following hashtags hashtag red shirt day red for accessibility easter seals hashtag unstoppable we're red for accessibility and inclusion so yeah so i have emotion and understanding i have an actual red shirt day shirt adam and jesse have new jersey devil's uniform that's right well because steve's mr big wheel over at easter seal and we didn't get a t-shirt so easter seal sent steve an official t-shirt and then adam and i chose to wear the most
Starting point is 00:07:54 red jersey the devil they uh in the letter that came with the shirt they said also it's funny don't say hello to your friends yeah they all they also said that we do not acknowledge them They said only famous people can wear a red shirt. That's right. I also want to throw out there, if you're looking at the video right now, the confetti per capita is a little heavily weighted on my side. Jesse smartly fired it our direction. Jesse's got some confetti.
Starting point is 00:08:21 I got most of the confetti. Jesse got no confetti. When Steve called me about the plan, the plan was to shower you in confetti. Because of our 10-year anniversary. Yeah. No, because we knew you'd hate it. You wouldn't want to think about that. I feel like you would hate the moment.
Starting point is 00:08:35 All I can think right now, this is how much of a dad I've become, is like, who's going to clean this up? I know. It's going to take forever to clean up. We're going to be fighting this for months, man. Yeah, there's no way. Like, it was a cool idea, but there's no way I'm ever going to do it again. Oh, my God. Anyway, listen, 10 years and a happy red shirt day as well.
Starting point is 00:08:54 We wanted to say those things. And to our listeners who have been with us since day one and everybody who's come along along the way, I think we don't get the chance to do this enough. And I think we should more. uh we're so appreciative that you're bothering to listen uh that you make time in the day for us uh that we get your dms i think i don't think i've ever had more potential uh leafs trade uh dms than i have in the last couple of weeks uh it's crazy people like okay listen what do you think of this like i know that they haven't even got the general manager but like you know marner for carolina for something something and i'm like you know i i uh i i we so appreciate the passion and the excitement
Starting point is 00:09:31 and everything around this show it's been a crazy run especially last uh last couple years and with the network and the growth and everything and we know that we wouldn't be here there is no us without you and so uh we just want you to know that we love you and we appreciate it and you know thanks to the couple thousand people that listened to that first episode because i'm sure it wasn't very good almost positive it was no definitely not and the second episode was worse we haven't done the most important thing about our 10-year anniversary what's that and that's come up with a not so catchy phrase with 10 in it oh how have we not done that hold on i think we have to leave that to our listeners because it's like you're talking about like like jeter right
Starting point is 00:10:15 we need uh two packs we need to reach you or or uh duncan keith thousand games what d1k you want dropping the dick on him steve dixel but it's d i x like so dis right in french okay i think we i think we do better than that steve 10 dangle like steven no no add 10 wild i have a question do you know and blake do we have any idea how many episodes we've done in 10 years too many uh i can tell you how many uploads we have to uh like apple okay that would probably be that'd be like a ballpark figure it's got to be a thousand ish right well we were two episodes 613 uploads we were we were no there's more while there i know there's more than that we are yeah some show way back yeah so yeah i think that's post 2016 okay 613 it's a lot of
Starting point is 00:11:12 so you gotta add in three years yeah we got yeah so we're up we're up in your 800 something okay i would say i would have thought it was more than that it's wild thank you for offering your house on three different occasions to be our studio yeah hey man that was i was happy to do it actually the first one is thanks to your mom yeah i was living in my mom's basement yeah listen when when when steve simmons of the toronto sun was saying all these idiots in their basements he wasn't wrong and he actually came over to my basement and did the show with us god bless him yeah so one of the funniest things about adam having the studio in his house for a number of years throughout the podcast history is that he couldn't be late but even when the podcast was
Starting point is 00:11:55 across the street from his house oh my god he found a way to be in the elevator when we were supposed to be in the studio that was at rogers right yeah i yeah honestly like i this guy was late because of an elevator well because okay i was in i was in that condo across the street which was super slick looking yeah and had the outdoor pool and it turned into like a nightclub yeah because it was right off church street yeah man pride month was the bomb there except like i've never felt more insecure about my body with those boys those they look like they're carved from marble there's not a hair in the wrong place their eyebrows are brushed up they're tan they're looking they're all svelte all of them have 46 abs it's crazy but so do you adam but yeah yeah somewhere
Starting point is 00:12:37 give yourself props king but i remember the like when you're in a condo of that size you line up for the elevator right and of course being me uh i had to work most of the time i was working breakfast television in the morning and then we would either do the podcast between the two shows the afternoon show and whatever or we would do it after so in between i would leave bt at nine try to grab like a quick nap and then try to do quick prep and then run over and do the show for two hours and then we would go on the air jesse and i for another four or five hours man that's like this one time when i did my 150 kilometer drive round trip twice a week is that what it is it was something like that yeah from oshawa to 70 kilometers from oshawa it was pretty
Starting point is 00:13:25 fucking far wow that's not the same i mean it's a little talking about it's a little harder it was way harder no it's adam describe the day when you'd also have your world this week oh those were stupid that's a couple yeah because that's also your choice to live fucking in Santa Claus land by the North Pole my fucking choice you're like how close to the North Pole can I get
Starting point is 00:13:50 I could have lived with my parents forever Rudolph get the sleigh ready it's time to go into podcast Steve's next door like fuck okay so nobody told you to live out all the way there the economy told me to live all the way out there
Starting point is 00:14:05 uh i think uh uh to answer jesse's question i used to be on this you know when you turn on if you have cable you turn on your cable box there's always like a channel zero or channel one and we were channel one for rogers it's called your world this week i don't even know if it still exists i haven't had cable for years but um the uh uh uh i think it would be breakfast television from 5 30 to 9 your world this week from 10 to 12 and then we would start the podcast we would either have a break in between most of the time we did it at night which which was a problem because sometimes there would be a leaf game on like a tuesday yeah we would record during leaf game it was so as a result i missed the first nhl game of william nylander kisperi capon and zach hyman
Starting point is 00:14:53 and nikita sascha yeah because it was the only time we could fit it in and i remember it was the only time in the day yeah you were gonna be there and we told you we're like we would have yeah just go yeah you're like we i remember on the podcast we're like hey man you should have just gone on it the next day and instead i missed that two one lost to tampa yeah it was the only time of day when the three of us were free so we had to record at night but yeah adam you would you would have that break in between your your world this week yeah the afternoon show which started at two or three because for a while we were two and then we bumped it to three yeah we bumped it to three yeah so so that three hour window that was your whole day man two to seven
Starting point is 00:15:27 was murder hey honestly like there it sounds so stupid because radio is objectively like i mean i've worked manual labor jobs radio is so much easier than that but you just the the absolute like brain function of okay i'm gonna go on the air at two o'clock and i'm gonna have to find you know you're doing two or three topics an hour and you have to find 10 12 interesting things to talk about and it's harder than you think right and keep the ratings up and all the other things you have to do so i remember um you would be a shivering husk of a man yeah by the pipe i i'm actually excited like show i i quickly mentioned that uh i'll quickly mention that today i announced that i'm leaving virgin radio and one of the things i'm really excited about is being able
Starting point is 00:16:08 to do this show without waking up early like i haven't i haven't had the chance to do this show with you guys at full power and jesse you remember what it was like um ever and uh and it's kind of nice except for when we used to do the show on sundays i'd walk in all cheery and nappy and whatever um so i'm actually excited to like get full sleeps and do i think i'll probably be maybe better dude maybe i'll be worse maybe i'll be terrible maybe i'll just lose all like i'll be so bad maybe i'll be a fucking bum it's hard for my takes to get worse i'll say that's true you know that's true so anyway is there something we can do because like we can't say enough about the listeners and everything they've done for the last 10 years and everybody who's been there and
Starting point is 00:16:51 riding this journey with us like can we do a favorite memories from the podcast kind of in the comment section yeah section can you drop your favorite memory over the last 10 years it's funny when we do live events in like in kingston people will tell us hey i remember when you guys did this and i thought it was great and i forget sometimes that we even do this stuff like when we do this show um i i oftentimes forget what we did immediately after and then forget that it happened and so i would love to know i know that's just that's how my brain works so i would say uh if you guys could tell us what your favorite moments were i'd love to know we'll read some of them out on uh on friday maybe that's why that's why we need the hashtag maybe for this summer
Starting point is 00:17:30 what's the hashtag i don't know it needs to have 10 in it well uh oh okay give it i got it he's got it the d is a 10 because the line and the zero tangle so it's s and one zero p s one zero p oh that kind of works hold on that's shit yeah exactly exactly it looks like it says stop it's also kind of perfect because it's steve's original lfr number psyop maddie pull up the pages uh document i just i love what that is why don't you put it in times new roman font size zero like i wanted to visualize it what does it look like in courier i need to see what it looks like in helvetica new no i need courier is that the hashtag what about sdp 10 instead of n sdp 10 instead of 10 no but i mean instead of n yeah instead of n
Starting point is 00:18:36 sdp 10 do we write oh so i like sdp 10 oh no this one's stupider though why like this sdp 10 no my my that's that's fucking terrible i thought it was just the one zero i didn't know was the actual letters no that's that's we can't do that we cannot no no sdp one zero n oh my god no i think it has to be this it has to be this it's so it's it's literally all letters sd p t e n all right that's got to be the hashtag right this yes you you made a huge what is it now sdp 10 no it can't be no please don't do this to me this is so stupid yeah no i'm out of you got it okay i did never forget that we are dangle navy because you guys said we should be dangle navy like rihanna navy because i hated it so much
Starting point is 00:19:46 battleship sucks so hard yeah and you guys just decided steve hates this let's do it and now my house is covered in shit with anchors on it now your kid wears it my kid wears anchors everywhere steve who hates the beach and doesn't love swimming he can't he can't swim i i'm getting you could swim better at swimming i could survive for five to ten minutes there you go before honor tragedy so if everybody out there uh we've come up with the hashtag it is hashtag sdp10 all letters so it's sdp ten use that hashtag on twitter or on the youtube comments and comment your favorite memory of the last 10 years oh my god i don't make t-shirts and you know what i think we should do that is we'll start selling them on friday you know when we
Starting point is 00:20:35 we do have a summer break coming in like a month and a half so there's a lot of content to happen before then but we definitely want to have some stuff that releases in the summer maybe we can do some some like best of compilations over the 10 years that people can remember oh you know this could be our way to to make some of our best we're going to do some interviews and stuff too so like don't worry it will be some of it will be new but like a best of over different years what's weird though is when we did some retrospective stuff uh a couple christmases ago we will look back and we're like oh it's not that good no it was some bad content but we were younger right we didn't know as much yeah anyway and um what what never mind no but uh okay without blowing too much uh
Starting point is 00:21:20 a friend of mine who i work with at sports net was like man a lot of your early stuff was pretty cringe thanks man yeah well like i'm i i think um sometimes in life you have to be brave enough to suck at something for a long time and uh and i mean like it's something you always say about youtube right yeah you gotta suck you do have to yeah you have you have to be cringe to get to where you want to be yeah oh you gotta you gotta survive that era you gotta be vulnerable enough to just be cringy and and not be good at something to eventually get good at it yeah that's what i'm hoping to do this summer like i'm excited to have like a hobby i don't know what it's going to be yet but i'm trying golf out and my whole goal right now uh is to get the ball in the air just
Starting point is 00:22:04 get it in the air doesn't matter where it lands you sound like a prisoner at shawshank talking about what you're going to do when you're on the outside. That's how it feels. I'm going to get up at 7, maybe even 8 a.m. That's what I'm going to do, man. It's crazy. It's going to be incredible. Just you wait.
Starting point is 00:22:21 So listen, let's talk to Dave, and then let's get into Brad Treliving's resume. Since as of right now, we know that the final little bits and pieces are being put together on his contract, and then he will be officially announced tomorrow at a press conference as the general manager
Starting point is 00:22:39 for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Let's talk to Dave first, though. You can bet that with David Bastel. Brought to you by Sports Interaction. Get in the action and make a play. 19 plus.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Please play responsibly. Okay, Dave. Yep. It's a big day. It's a big, big day. Obviously, with the Stanley Cup Finals on the way, we've got some really exciting
Starting point is 00:23:01 props up at Sports Interaction. Can we start with sharing is caring. this is a really cool one yeah sharing is caring of course we talked about this last time right so we thought and you know what apologies to uh the twitter handle that sent me a note saying which year did they share the con smith trophy there wasn't a shared cons my trophy winner my mistake this guy right here my mistake uh i thought there was i thought i something triggered me to say that so apologies there but perhaps it's this year so a lot of conversation
Starting point is 00:23:36 for the goaltender sergey bravovsky matthew kachuk's been in that conversation so do they share that award which could happen 50 to 1 if you're interested i don't hate that 50 to 1 is crazy. Those are crazy odds. You might as well. I can't get anything at 50 to 1. I can make a $2 donation. Yeah. I mean, listen, there are years
Starting point is 00:24:02 where a couple of people should have won. And I think about the year that I think Crosby got it because Bill Kessel should have won. So you could have shared that year. And I think you can make the argument. Listen, it's hard for me to say that Kachuk's got the edge on Bobrovsky right now because Bobrovsky's save percentage
Starting point is 00:24:18 in the East Conference final was like 970. It's so stupid. I don't know how you argue with that, but then Kachuk's in like, hey, I won all those overtime games, so what are you going to do about that? We got four to seven of the most important games of the season coming up. Yeah, so we'll find out, I guess.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Jesse, what are you looking up? I was trying to see, because you mentioned the shared consmite that's never happened, but there's been shared Veznas. Yeah. I was trying to look up which years. No, not Kachuk. saw chuck and bauer um forgot that yeah yeah who could have forgot couldn't be me hey also also i think didn't montreal share one in the 80s or the late 90s yeah but i don't remember
Starting point is 00:25:02 who they were yeah it was like those are the ones i was trying to look up yeah yeah okay well anyway it's it's happened like there's precedence for sharing nhl trophies that drive you down And that's where I was thinking. Exactly. Speaking of Matthew Kachuk, will he score an overtime goal any time of the series, 9-1? Yes. 9-1?
Starting point is 00:25:23 That's an absolute yes. Yeah, I would take that. Not a bad bet, eh? That's a fun one. Yeah. I really love that. By the way, under Dangle's doozies, there's probably 20-something new exclusive props for the Stanley Cup.
Starting point is 00:25:40 There's a lot of goal totals. There's one Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg to be shown together. Who's going to be shown first, Brooks Koepka or Snoop Dogg in the crowd? A lot of that fun stuff. I love that. I want to be Koepka. So definitely check that out. I love the way you guys are handling this because usually these props are reserved for the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Then that's it. But this year you guys have come out with all these different things for the Stanley Cup final, which is so much fun. Do you think Brooks Koepka will be excited? With his eyes? I'm really freaking excited. I have such a maze. Do you have a prop? Mr. No Blank?
Starting point is 00:26:11 Do you have a prop on the amount of NHL reporters that are going to miss events because they're either hung over or stuck at a craps table? We do not have that. That would be interesting. It'd be tricky just to figure exactly the right number to put down as the winner kind of thing. But yeah, it's, you know what, two pretty good cities, right? because you're thinking that Miami is going to be hosting most of the stuff that happens in Sunrise. And, well, I don't need to tell you guys about Vegas.
Starting point is 00:26:45 No. I'm so dumb because Jesse talks about craps, and I'm like, is that something Florida is known for? Forgot about the other city. A little bit. Dave, awesome, awesome, awesome. I can't wait to find out more that you have on Friday. This is going to be exciting.
Starting point is 00:27:04 Saturday night is the game. Dave, we'll see you Friday, and have a great week until then pal same to you bye um is there confetti in your coffee uh there is i told you it's three pieces oh that sucks it's gonna have a nice timothy's coffee but i can't um do you want a new one i'll get one eventually but i don't want to have any of this the the shit that you ordered for this thank you steve no problem do you remember when do you remember when we were in the uh i'm glad you paused them for shitting on the coffee we have here.
Starting point is 00:27:35 The coffee Jesse orders is garbage. It's so bad. But I remember, Jesse, remember you took that mic sock and you just put it in Steve's drink in the middle of the show? Out of nowhere. You don't remember this?
Starting point is 00:27:45 No, I do. You must remember that. That was funny. Hey, Brad Tree Living, according to Darren Drager, will be the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager. Could happen as early as this afternoon in terms of the signing,
Starting point is 00:27:56 the official announcement, the press conference will be tomorrow. Was he the guy they wanted or was he the only one available? yes um but it doesn't mean that brad true living is bad uh it's not it's not necessarily bad true living and i think i think we need to have a look at this person the 10 years 10 years a big resume in calgary um and understand especially with the last couple of years with murray edwards saying this is the coach i want despite the fact that maybe it's not the best choice um we have to have
Starting point is 00:28:27 a look at the the wholesome view um also i i think it's hilarious um that if if anybody thought anything was going to happen after the leafs um second round bouncing it was probably that they would they would fire keith and probably that dubas would get an extension done and one of the big three or big four would be trained yes that's that's kind of what we thought how it's worked out is we got rid of dubas and they're saying that 90 to 95 keith will stay which i don't necessarily hate i mean he's been a good regular season guy but it was something apparently that shanny said to uh every every every all one person that he interviewed shanahan um he said he want he likes keith he wants to keep him but it's ultimately the gm's decision
Starting point is 00:29:13 but it's not because shanee has to okay it so i just like that this is the weird part right brad treliving went from lame duck gm to instantly lame duck gm is that how you feel kind of well not lame duck it's just like i i don't know is he competent chuck fletcher like you just i think that's not fair no but like chuck fletcher is a guy who you hire when you want him to do the things you want he's an executor but you don't want to do the work yeah when you're the flyers and you have stupid fucking ideas but you don't want to do all the legwork you hire chuck fletcher and he'll do the stupid fucking ideas for you and then they fired him because they're like oh no our stupid fucking ideas were fucking stupid and then brad chuck this is your fault yeah chuck
Starting point is 00:30:02 take the fall we're all looking for the guy who did this it's them uh and true living is the guy who like it's so difficult to evaluate his time in calgary because especially at the end we know he didn't have a whole hell of a lot of control right now let's start with his draft history sure okay now draft is it's really important that we make a distinction here um the general manager hires usually hires the scouting staff but the drafts themselves are far more reflection of what the scouting staff has come to the gm with i know the gm makes the ultimate call Dubas especially because of his knowledge of the junior leagues and because
Starting point is 00:30:42 he had just come out of there had a lot of a lot of input on that but it ultimately comes down to the scouts to make the call and so I want to read some names out and I want you to feel like hey this is this is great but also remember
Starting point is 00:30:58 that there is an asterisk next to it because this person wasn't necessarily drafted necessarily by Bradshaw Living it was a recommendation what okay are you starting 2014 or 15 14 okay i would say 2015 just because 14 is just getting established doesn't matter it's not like like this year i'm not gonna be like true living's a fucking genius like if the leafs get okay good all right well he was hired in april he was hired
Starting point is 00:31:25 on april 28th 24th i think that's more than enough times two months before the draft so no i was about to say it's a little hard to give him any credit for any of those because all the all the players are done you know like you play your season and that's where the scouting is evaluated and then the scouts already kind of know who they're picking at that point it would be the previous regime's scouting staff yeah that's what i'm trying to argue okay fine well the only person of note in that draft really is sam bennett which they picked fourth overall but uh the next year actually reflects pretty darn well on true living and staff because it starts with so sorry not no i do no no no no no no because i ruined your 2014 thing i have to bring it back because i forgot
Starting point is 00:32:05 about sam bennett there was a story out of calgary and i do not remember who it's from that uh someone saw tra living and brian burke who was the president at the time high five um when edmonton picked dry sidle yes we adam read that tweet last episode yes well there you go well who's it from i forget i forget now i've deleted the prep for it oh shit you're asking me to remember stuff i can't i couldn't even remember that you guys or i couldn't even see that you guys brought in confetti today come on i'm out on an island here fair enough but i'm gonna name players i think it's important like in the draft you want to look at the players that actually played nhl games right yes you don't want it like you're gonna miss and you're gonna
Starting point is 00:32:47 miss most of the time that's what the draft is most of the players are not gonna make it yeah you are gonna you're gonna swing a 200 or a 300 like a like in baseball your average is not gonna to be great but uh starting with the 2015 draft they had five picks and three of them have played over 150 games in the nhl and those names are rasmus anderson great second round pick 53rd overall oliver shillington second round 60th overall i remember leaf fans really wanted shillington really good and uh in the sixth round 166th overall andrew manji apani that is a great friggin draft holy shit that's of five picks they got three of them that's a d pair and a uh and a good second line third first first line i'd say middle six forward middle six yeah yeah pretty
Starting point is 00:33:36 good that's a great draft there are four players in the 2016 draft that uh uh have played in the nhl uh those players are matthew kachuk first round sixth overall that was an easy hell yes meh um dylan dubay second round 56th overall now here's where true living's got a good little streak going of the uh second and third round because north's trophy winner adam fox was third round 66th overall i cannot believe he went to the third round yeah that's a tough one because people forget he was drafted by the flames they had to trade him he goes to carolina though and he wouldn't sign there either yeah he wanted to go to the rangers he forced his way to the rangers it's kind of crazy that he was good enough before ever even playing a game that he could do that
Starting point is 00:34:21 well i mean he's a rare example of a player who can do that and pulled it off and jimmy vc did that you know what you know what's interesting about that though and he ended up on the rangers he's never been he's never been stuck with like this player is difficult he said no yeah he said no to two nhl clubs and obviously he's been great in new york and i don't want to take away from his success but most prospects that do that look at even eric lindros Hall of Famer, but all people could ever talk about is how he forced his way out of Quebec. And honestly, if you know anything about the Quebec ownership at that time,
Starting point is 00:34:53 you wouldn't have wanted to play for them either. The Leafs were the beneficiaries of a college player who the team who drafted him felt like he wasn't going to sign there. Hyman. Oh, Florida. Florida picked him. And they're like, ah, he's not going to sign here. So the Leafs got Hyman for Greg McKegg in a conditional seven.
Starting point is 00:35:12 Greg McKegg, who has gone on to a pretty solid career as well. With a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg. stop it uh so matthew kachuk dylan dube adam fox and with three games to his credit and good for him uh 166 overall in the sixth round matthew phillips um oh the the the little guy from victoria royals yeah yeah he had a crazy year in the ahl well that's it that's an interesting pick pretty interesting pick yeah and listen late that late i mean you never expect him to play even one game that's when you make picks like that yeah so pretty pretty good start right you know you got Anderson, Shillington, Mangiapane, Kachuk, Dubé, and Fox.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Pretty good, and I'll include Phillips in that, too. The next one, next year, Calgary picks 16th in the first round with Yuso Valimaki. Tough. Tough one. Still has played 160 games in the NHL. He's not a bad player. It's just they never really made a spot for him.
Starting point is 00:36:07 Adam Ruzicka, fourth round, 109th overall. He's played 75 NHL games. Yeah. Now, as we get closer to the current year, you should expect that some players... It takes four or five years sometimes for these guys to develop. What draft year is this? We're now into 18.
Starting point is 00:36:25 That was 17 that I just told you. Valimacki is 17. How many players... Here, you can sort by games played on 2018. I'd like to know how many players have hit, I would say, 150 games. so uh in the 2018 draft not a single draft pick has played in the nhl no no no that so that's just calgary i mean league wide okay do you want to do this yeah sure i'll do it sorry click that
Starting point is 00:36:54 it's not a ton of players yeah it's i don't know 20 like the most is brady kachuk with 359 yeah 20 max so it's not a lot uh so yeah from the 2018 so and listen they didn't draft until the fourth round either so i also feel like you know you're taking swings and you're trying so yeah that hold on to that note for after you're done uh jacob pelletier was the first round pick in 2019 what number does he wear i'm sorry pelletier uh i don't know what number does he wear i know i know i know i know uh the most games that anybody has played from that draft uh jack hughes with 244 and capo caco with 239 uh very different results there um 2020 draft um no player from the flames has yet to hit the ice uh uh but you have um connor zary
Starting point is 00:37:47 yen kuznetsov uh jeremy poirier um and then of course um matt coronado the next year was the first over first round pick 13th overall um cameron why not hey drafted there true living drafted why not why not why not uh love that third round 89th overall and uh and then last year they only had three picks started in the second round topi roni and then did not get another one until the fifth round with parker bell so when did they get dustin wolf that's a good the seventh round of the 2019 draft there you go so that's he's only played the one game but like that's an unreal pick he's one of the best goalies not in the nhl it's not it's not a bad record it's it's really not and uh you know his draft record is kind of funny a little bit um like dubious
Starting point is 00:38:39 because this is a team that for a lot of the time he was there was going for it and he actually what what true living i think has a has a poor record of is a ton of the picks he's traded away the other team use those picks and hit right now there is a fascinating trade because i was looking through this today too adam okay um yeah because we're going to do trades and free agency signings too true living acquired michael stone from the arizona coyotes oh i remember that in exchange for a third and fifth round pick so that's not a high price even though like michael stone people like them people don't like them third and a fifth round pick that's not a high price both of those picks are starting goaltenders in the nhl who are they
Starting point is 00:39:27 neither of them are starting goaltenders for the arizona coyotes of course not the fifth round pick is akira schmidt oh wow okay the third round pick is stewart skinner wow all-star and freaking akira schmidt who you never know uh yeah a lot of these picks hit they gave a second to uh ottawa for curtis lazar and mike cosca yeah um and there was a 2017 second rounder alex forminton a lot of these guys ended up playing nhl games travis hamannick and lucas fook um there was a first round pick sent to the islanders that's noah dobson but it's like no adoption oh never mind that's 12th overall that sucks man that trade sucks yep yeah there's there's a few pretty tough ones in there even like the dougie ham well i don't know
Starting point is 00:40:26 how it depends on how you look about the dougie hamilton situation how that played out you know i i think the dougie hamilton situation is a a great place to start because it's perhaps one of the things that he is best known for early on i mean obviously we can go all the way back to like him requiring acquiring um brian elliott or um you know uh some of this stuff that he did early also freddie hamilton let's not forget freddie hamilton i think it's a pretty easy argument the flames won that trade well let's go to it so let's talk about dougie hamilton what what uh i'm just trying to pull it up here it's hannifin and lynn home for dougie hamilton adam fox and michael furland i don't know how you win that in retrospect because but we didn't know who
Starting point is 00:41:08 adam fox is going to be yet well so here's how you win that trade uh furland uh i believe well his career was sort of cut short by injuries he didn't do a whole ton in carolina hamilton they let walk walk to your guys the new jersey devils and adam fox the hurricane simply had to flip because they weren't able to sign him either hamilton's the only guy who made an impact uh on that team now they might have flipped fox and got decent picks i i feel like they didn't like i think the mismanagement of they got like mid-round picks the hamilton situation you know and and whether it was i remember at the time like john shannon tweeted out about you know something about you know the team would be out for lunch and and dougie hamilton wanted to be at a
Starting point is 00:41:55 museum museum or something like that's the famous story that came out from there and the insinuation i believe was that he wasn't a team player which i think has been proven to be false he's just a different dude i think not having dougie hamilton um and and making a space for him in terms of like making him comfortable and making him a big part of your team you acquired him from from boston so that he could anchor your defense mismanaging that is is a blight now they did turn it into a good trade and one thing that you're going to see over and over again is brad true living is pretty damn good at making some trades yeah i i think in a situation where his hands are tied behind his back and the adam fox situation because with adam fox if you look back
Starting point is 00:42:38 at the history he had every right to kind of not sign with calgary he was he was a college free agent his contract if he plays the year in college or whatever his he becomes a ufa on it's like august 15th or whatever you know and if he's looking at he's like i can just be a free agent and i'm 20 why would i ever sign with any nhl team yeah you know so if they draft him on this chance that he might sign with them and then they get clarity that he's not going to do it and then they flip them for a package of lindholm and hanafin plus you throw in dougie hamilton who i guess was unhappy or doesn't fit in or whatever that's to me that's a great trade by true living especially the way lindholm turned out and hanafin's like you don't have to say anything
Starting point is 00:43:20 like he's a great player and what the hurricanes get for adam fox uh nothing two seconds two seconds okay they got two seconds from the rangers one was dougie hamilton that walk sorry yeah one was mad so guard who i'm pretty sure is on the sense so they flipped him and then the other guy is noel gunler who i've i haven't heard of that's okay he's a recent they end up with seth jarvis because the leafs had to exactly this isn't about carolina no no shitty in that trade necessarily it's true living made the best of a bad situation in that and this is something that's kind of come up in trail living's track record here there's been numerous times where he has to make these trades because of circumstances and each time when the trade is made you're like oh you didn't do too
Starting point is 00:44:04 bad in those situations it comes up with the kachuk trade as well yeah that's that's a deal that um like at the time no i wasn't a huge fan of it but you know you got to let these things play out and he's i think the tricky thing with true living uh in calgary is in numerous situations he was faced with oh the player just doesn't want to be here and what are you supposed to do about well and and i think let's go back a little bit further because i'm looking at some of these earlier trades and he had to do uh i mean when he traded for dougie hamilton it was a first round pick a second round pick and two sorry it's two second round picks the first one boston turned into zach seneshan and then jacob carlson and then jeremy lozon and that was for dougie hamilton
Starting point is 00:44:49 not bad not bad at all um he was also able to offload sven berchi and curtis glencross at the trade deadline in 2015 for draft picks uh the the sven berchi pick turned into raspis anderson the the glencross one i did a trade tree on because they sold at the deadline and made the playoffs right so they did extremely well yeah it's the shame uh about true living is is some of his best work was eight years ago well and and but you see you see some of that you see some of this kind of where he's harvesting picks here uh another one i really want to point out here and i really like this trade and people forget about this guy but when when yuri hoodler signed out of detroit to calgary i was living in calgary and he was easily to me at least their best center at
Starting point is 00:45:35 the time um had some really good seasons but towards the end of his career that's a very underrated nhl player he played on some incredible detroit teams that he got overshadowed but towards the end of his career he wasn't that great anymore and true living was able to offload him for a second and a fourth to florida with no cap damage and that's and that's a four million dollar contract he also turned uh chris russell into um yoki paka uh and dylan dubay dylan do that dylan dubay pick is from florida yeah and like is he the most high-end player no he's very least on the roster i listen leaf fans this this one will sell you on true living yeah right you got a third round pick for dave riddick yeah we saw how dave played in he got a third round pick yeah for five
Starting point is 00:46:24 mid-ass games from dave riddick now he did give up a second round pick and a third round pick for brian elliott in 2016 that second round picture into jordan kairu my own that's not great that's not great well like that's the one i forgot if we go over every gm's track record how many of these do we get like the biggest name uh true living required was nicholas backstrom the other nicholas backstrom for david jones yeah i remember that goalie the goal yeah yeah this backstrom was a flame yeah the goalie yeah the goalie no i know you're talking about the goal i remember that he was great it's the biggest name he actually was good he was great for a time yeah i don't know what caught up with him but no he was he was a really good player so i i wonder
Starting point is 00:47:09 like if we if we analyze this for all 32 gms you know how oh yeah how many draft picks turn into stars you know and i look at i look at this and hold that again you also i think if you take a draft pick and you're and it's an it like if you trade a prospect it's one thing if you trade a draft pick that team has to hit on that draft pick so it's a credit to the team like the hammock trade in 2017 the islanders got a first a second and a second uh the second the next year uh the the player that you really need to know about that is no adoption right that wealth overall like a top 15 pick you better be acquiring a great player yes and he just he simply was not yes yeah hamannik was never that no but there was a lot of in in analytics at the time hamannik was
Starting point is 00:47:52 a analytics darling he was i don't know the leafs were going to trade jvr the last year of jvr's contract for him that would have been a better trade for uh for everybody but yeah hamannik's I like I like what he obviously did. Obviously, later on, obviously, we get the Lindholm and Hannafin. You've got I'm kind of moving forward here. The one the one deal I want to really circle on is Milan Lucic and James Neal. Now, James Neal had signed in Calgary for I think it was a three year deal. He was making almost six million right after the Golden Knights run to the Stanley Cup finals and it almost immediately
Starting point is 00:48:31 didn't work out. I think he had his teeth knocked out first off, didn't he? And it just was not... Who players is this? James Neal. And obviously,
Starting point is 00:48:39 the Milan-Lucic deal came, you know, that contract happened with Peter Chiarelli and he was supposed to play right shotgun with Connor McDavid, which LOL in retrospect,
Starting point is 00:48:49 there's no way he would ever been able to keep up. Don't let your players be the GM. But James Neal was... the real deal what you would expect after that run he had a great run with vegas he really did and he had had some great years in pittsburgh before that you can't really fault the flames for doing it but there was not really a culture fit there they just did not get along and so he
Starting point is 00:49:10 trades for wasn't that bill peters he couldn't get along with bill that yes probably bill peters we'll talk about the coaching picks well but the the trade in itself like no one has ever accused milan lucic of being a bad teammate and that's fair and he was tough uh was he too expensive absolutely but they had to get james neal out of town and that was the only way they were going to be able to do it so that lucic deal just expired here's so speaking of just expired this is the concerning one from kevin pipetti and it's a great point from a great mind the flames are paying and Bradshaw Living did all of this. Huberto, 10.5 until he's 37.
Starting point is 00:49:53 Kadri, 7 million until he's 38. Yeah. Wieger, 6.25 until he's 37. Markstrom, 6 million until he's 36. Wow. For context, Tavares will be 34 when his deal expires. And we're talking about that like, Jesus Christ, this guy's on the back nine. It's the Dave Nones like, I don't care about your four, five, and six.
Starting point is 00:50:16 yeah so but but that to me is more relevant than all the draft stuff because first of all true living uh contractually uh the flames are not allowing him to work on the leafs uh draft which is fine because it means the leaves will draft the way they always draft i mean i also think there's ways around that but um he is taxed with locking up the core deciding who's going to be in the core for years to come and locking them up matthews how long is that contract going to be how much is it going to be nylander how much is that contract going to be how much is it going to be and marner is an interesting conversation he's got two years left the no move kicks in yada yada we've been through that yeah and there's a ton of free agents oh yeah on this team he's got a lot
Starting point is 00:51:10 of cap space to work with and do good things with and screw up. Tyler, he's really good at giving guys who are just on the cusp of 30 really long contracts. Right. That doesn't sound like a good. However, let's give him credit. Last
Starting point is 00:51:26 year, what choice did he freaking have? His two best players walked after a disaster second round against Edmonton. What choice did he have? He had to go out and make the he had to do the sign and trade deal with kachuk and goudreau walked for nothing now you could say that the flames fucked that up the season before when they didn't sign him to extension didn't work harder on the extension
Starting point is 00:51:47 and i think you you absolutely make the argument but i wonder how much of that was ownership interference as well he said so much himself in the in the uh in was it the interview the press no no he didn't say it um the new gm what's his name new gm in calgary craig conroy craig cronroy said that he said that and that they wouldn't let that happen again you know they wouldn't go in that situation with johnny goudreau because the he he controlled everything he had all the leverage once they reached a certain point and they let him walk and he learned that lesson i hope true living has as well i i i hope murray edwards learned that lesson in a way i mean he's sort of the perfect guy for the next uh few weeks that doesn't mean i think he's going to do a good
Starting point is 00:52:33 job long term like basically i keep coming back to it's impossible to run it back it's impossible to run it back with this core you can't i don't think you can sell the fans on it no brendan's really really trying oh there's certain fans you can sell i hope i think he's fibbing i think he's a big fibber and fibbing i i'm looking at just to back to backtrack onto the contracts like i don't like blake coleman having a no trade clause and uh sticking around till he's 35 that's a really oh man it's not a good one cadre like you already did the cadre and hubert are ones and mackenzie wieger like he's going to be 37 when his contract expires and it's all of them are north or in and around five million or higher you know he's he's handed out a lot of long-term contracts to guys
Starting point is 00:53:26 going into their 30 and he had to do like he the the the weaker one he had to do and the huberto he had to do because he had just traded for them and they're and they're looking at him going well you just traded for me so my price is up huberto was coming off a record-breaking year uh and and you know you can't let him go for nothing you can't trade for that and then let him go for nothing and then Kadri and Coleman well I mean Kadri everybody wanted Kadri it was how who could fit Kadri right I think there was a deal with the Islanders that supposedly fell through right everybody was expecting him Kadri I think I think he was supposed to sign with the Islanders well so Treliving tried to trade for Kadri and Kadri shot it down oh yeah yeah for T.J. Brody and I
Starting point is 00:54:11 think and that's going to be a fascinating situation because if you're T.J. Brody you know this guy tried to trade you yeah and he's coming in i want to say this too about the flames i was talking to we were having a chat a chat and the cj showed uh whatsapp chat that we have um horrible and one of the things that um that julian was kind of saying and i i kind of agree with is that i don't look at the flames and think that's this the results they got this year is what they are and i think when we took it when we look at brad brad true living yes it's a results-based business i a thousand percent i was hardcore on dubas for that but to be honest we all know that the coach didn't fit we all know that the goaltending was all of a sudden terrible we also
Starting point is 00:54:55 all know that they lost 17 overtime games that's 17 more points even if they got half of them that's eight more points they're in the playoffs yeah uh we we did before i think true living was even rumored to be in the leafs conversation on account of dubas was still the gm um we did number of goalie appearances in dang it videos and markstrom led by a mile i'm pretty sure he had seven and no one else had four and what is he shocking at what's the one thing he's really if you're a goaltender do you remember by the way do you remember the play that kicked that off who was the first when was the first time you said that i don't remember there was oh man years ago do you remember it's over the pandemic at some point but i don't remember when well it's a good
Starting point is 00:55:43 it's a good line i don't know i don't go this is going to be a hit but markstrom is a shockingly bad puck hand stay in the fucking net yeah like stay in the fucking net and i don't think a number of times he did that in one goal games cost them a playoff spot and the idea that that huberto is going to be a 66 point player when he never really has been he's always been more than that on shitty panthers teams uh the idea that cadre is going to have a down year with all the injuries he had his back was literally stapled together and by the end of the year yeah it's back like there's there's so much that went wrong for the flames i it's not hard to see if they're trying if they're challenging for the division next year are you going to be that surprised well so that that's
Starting point is 00:56:26 my question if the flames change their coach like true living supposedly wanted to and they're fine again does that change your opinion of him or is it just no i don't care he's the leafs gm i only care about and he's not dubas that's the other problem bradshaw livings the biggest mark against him with a lot of leaf fans is he's not kyle dubas that's the reason some people are going to love him and the reason a lot of people are going to hate him um i'm in the middle i don't know and then i mean i'm not jacked about this but how much of bradshaw livings decision making matters if brendan shanahan makes the final decision anyways you're right jesse and if that's the case things have been going pretty good yes in the end we'll get more of the same yeah i mean i mean the de
Starting point is 00:57:13 facto gm is shanny well in the elephant in the room is the flames uh were just as futile in the playoffs as the leafs if not more yeah right so no exact thing they won two rounds yeah exact same uh like never made out of the second round no no they've gone the the far like same amount they went the far they went they went the far they blew an enormous lead in game one against edmonton won the game nine six people forget that and then lost four straight and don't forget too that this is a guy that got tyler toffoli for tyler pitlick and emil hinneman or heineman jesus good deal yeah and it included a first round pick a fifth round pick and a fourth round pick we'll see what philip that's burying the lead a little but but i mean like it was the first round pick uh philip
Starting point is 00:58:04 messar oh that's yeah yeah i mean who knows pretty good i think it's a who knows but i think toffoli's worked out for them uh yes he's been great yes you know this is a like on the trade front which is what the leafs absolutely need to do and you were saying this earlier i like this resume i can't lie to you i like the resume it's bold at least well i think that's what they fucking need yeah they need he's made at least two very bold decisions that have the most recent one has not gone great let's just say it yeah um the but the the the hannafin elias lindholm one it's gone pretty well can we talk about the hiring process let's do it jess why was no other human being on earth even considered for the least general manager so that's not totally true
Starting point is 00:59:02 although i know you're being facetious anyway uh mark bergevin got a zoom interview was zoom interviewed yeah and oh i think there was one more and i don't remember the yeah so they flew in one guy had a couple meetings with him that guy's gradually living and then the other candidate they had a zoom meeting i think one guy was considered the whole time brendan shanahan said brendan shanahan saw bradshall living got fired kyle dubas i i can move on from him and i want that guy and we're gonna go and we're gonna get that guy do you think that's how it went because i want to ask you this i want to ask you this do you think that you remember after dubas's press conference that infamous monday two two mondays ago it's only a couple weeks ago that this all
Starting point is 00:59:42 happened it's crazy unbelievable so jesse i want to ask you this so so shanee's driving home and we've talked about this many times driving home and he's not feeling confident about dubas wanting to be GM of the Leafs or or his confidence in Dubas is GM of the Maple Leafs is his mind going well we'll just get somebody else or is it we'll get Brad no I think I I'm like pretty confident that when Brendan Shanahan made that decision that week with Bradshaw living already been fired for about a month at that point because he was fired in mid-April and this happened end of mid-April ish so there been a month of Bradshaw living sitting on the sidelines Brendan Shanahan knew in his back pocket if i make this weird decision all of a sudden to get rid of kyle dubas i have
Starting point is 01:00:28 a gm that i want that i can put in place right now because he'll take this job he's a guy i want to hire and i can always do that here i'm going to simplify it is there a visible boston pizza from the gardener i think that's how he chose this man he's i'm gonna get the son of that guy he saw the the austin pizza thing and he said exactly oh because boston pizza changed their name to austin pizza yeah it's like you know what no but i i honestly i honestly think a lot of the decision making went with brendan shanahan went into it he's like i got a guy if i don't need this guy i got a guy and then when they went through the hiring process that just kind of proved the point in that nobody else was ever in contention for this job do you get the impression
Starting point is 01:01:17 he's a difficult guy to convince of different positions like i don't know it just sort of seems like he had his guy and that was it because that was his guy and like he made up his mind that kyle wasn't the guy and guess what you're no longer my guy you know who's my guy the one guy i've thought of that's my guy who did anyone try to talk him out of it and how did it go that's what i don't think anybody asked him a question because they knew there'd be no point because he had a guy decade and they haven't done shit he had a guy and they went through this whole thing and we no other names even came up to be like oh they're in contention like we heard about yeah the berger van zoom interview and all that but like bottero wasn't there they didn't do
Starting point is 01:02:08 tulsky at all matthew darsh isn't in consideration nobody how grateful is mark bergevin that he didn't waste money on that flight yeah he's like thank god it was just an email with the zoom link yeah he's like yeah he's on a park bench it's all windy even he doesn't care so even we we heard there's some doug wilson rumors that he was looking to interview for the job and then that was pulled back yeah and then we heard like oh no he was never really up for it so it was always one guy that's a bad way to hire somebody i wonder how much of that is people in the organization like floating those names just to see if the public get behind them and be like oh brendan see look at this and but no we're going with this guy we're not going with kyle yeah and it doesn't
Starting point is 01:03:00 mean that true living is the wrong guy for the job i just think when you're doing your due diligence you should actually do due diligence and reach out to more than one person uh yeah i mean it's the you know the leafs always talk about the toronto maple leaves and this is a prestigious thing and you know a big knock on kyle was he gave the leafs the impression even the slightest shadow of a doubt that he might not want to be the gm here and that's because and they said how dare you and they said how dare you because which i i'm not even sure is the worst position to take it's a prestigious job it's a difficult job to get a lot of guys would kill to be in that position and they proceeded to not interview the list that i assume would be long of guys who want to be in
Starting point is 01:03:59 that position at all i will say this i think brad true living's a little nuts and i like that about him why is that because he was the gm in calgary a canadian market for 10 years almost nine years nine seasons nine years and he had the chance to go almost wherever he wanted and live a quieter more peaceful life and he decided no i want to go to calgary's craziness times a million just based on population size and just i want to be the gm of the leafs where they if i trade a prospect whose rights are running out for a conditional seventh people will analyze it there'll be 40 articles written on they will lose their minds i'll make a whole video about it If you re-sign Dennis Malkin, I'm in your fucking walls, Bradley.
Starting point is 01:04:57 Like, he's a little nuts to go from Calgary and then looking at the Leafs and being like, that seems like a cool job. No, Kevin Pivetti is drafting a tweet right now about that conditional six that might go out the window. That's right. And Kevin, your Twitter account's been on fire lately. Keep it up.
Starting point is 01:05:15 I also want to throw this out. brad trilliving might be the first leafs general manager in history that's as rich as or more rich than the members of the board and i think that's important because despite what you may think brad trilliving doesn't fucking need this bro uh and uh so i i had a look i don't think i like that the trilliving family fortune is oh yeah adam would bring this up it's about seven eight hundred million dollars now larry tannenbaum's in around two bill this is an adam wild ass i think it's important man yo seriously if you're gonna walk into a room with a bunch of rich people which is what every board is of any major corporation and here's the thing mls isn't just a major
Starting point is 01:06:00 corporation on its own and it is but it's also 30 owned by a guy with two bill to his name then it's owned by one company that's worth somewhere in the neighborhood of they're saying 30 billion and another company that's worth $45 billion, which is Bell & Rogers. It's less than Waystar Royco. Way less than Waystar Royco, but it's Canada, so you got to remember scale is smaller.
Starting point is 01:06:25 You got to remember that. That's a lot here. To be able to hit, and I've been in some of these rooms, not because I'm a billionaire, but if you walk into rooms with executives like this, there is a way that you have to handle yourself.
Starting point is 01:06:40 It is a little dog-eat-dog, and this guy um uh he was he was born into this he you know his father has been extraordinarily successful brad if brad's dad had been a coal miner brad has had an outstanding unbelievable career and the fact that he's gone and done all this despite the fact that he's probably never had to work a day in his life is really impressive good for him but i just want to say that i think that it does help when you have some experience with navigating rich people because they're fucking different and weird man they are and and i think it's a weird i know that's weird but potentially valid point it's also yeah very valid like this is this is like you guys know like okay
Starting point is 01:07:21 when you see a ceo of your company like a major if you work for like a major corporation your ceo comes by remember at rogers when when um merco bibich i don't merco bibich is a uh bell when joe natale was the uh ceo of uh of rogers and he would come by we would know three days in advance and they'd tell us to clean up our desks and they'd tell us to make sure that you shake Joe's hand and make sure you do this and say hi, whatever.
Starting point is 01:07:47 All the things that you're supposed to do when your CEO comes by. This guy knows what it's like to deal with people who are treated like that all the time. I'm telling you, I'm telling you, dealing with a board
Starting point is 01:07:59 is a lot different than dealing with your boss. It's so much different and I think that that may be an asset for them. I was disappointed when I met Joe Natale. Why? his my hand disappeared in his hand he had big hands i was disappointed because he wasn't uh wearing a big red suit with a giant white beard why you thought he was santa claus joe natale is
Starting point is 01:08:22 the italian version of you know how there's father christmas yeah joe natale is santa claus in italian is that what natale means no his name is just literally joe christmas is that really isn't yeah yeah yeah born natalie yeah born natalie yeah merry christmas oh you're right joe natalie is joe christmas funny that is really funny and i thought i was meeting father christmas and also i've never met him i made that up um uh then the new ceo by the way for rogers has been there since 2021 and he's another another of your kinsmen staffieri so tony staffieri he's the one who was let go and then brought back six months later when the family stopped fighting well that's because he he is yeah there was a whole it honestly it was like succession played
Starting point is 01:09:04 out it literally and uh staffieri has been a good friend of the family for a long time and long tenured there and he was supposed to be the guy several different times and now he actually is so it's kind of interesting um but it's why what are you uncomfortable because you work there i mean i didn't say that that was yo that whole episode was fucking bonkers with with that with the the fight at the top and the going the court and oh you mean the real life thing you're not talking about kendall no i'm talking about the real life thing that was that was crazy i read it you read it there you go you have no opinion though so listen i i also want to throw this out there um uh let's talk about the true living family a little bit here and why does this matter
Starting point is 01:09:48 jesse i'm going to send you a uh a tweet and i think you should you should see what's happening this is gonna blow your fucking mind what i'm about to show you okay did you jesse you were at the game with kawaii leonard hitting that shot against the 76ers boo the 76ers i was at the shot you were at the the famous shot game yes and now nick nurse has abandoned us i know to the other side i know i don't know he's dating our ex what a jerk i don't know if any coach has ever been more in a player's fucking walls and floorboards than nick nurse in joelle and beads but they're fans of each other now jim treliving that shot wrecked that guy jim treliving is actually in the kawaii picture oh yeah you're right i forgot about isn't that nuts jim not watching was
Starting point is 01:10:35 courtside and not as excited as everybody else when it was going in but you could tell he was probably in he is very literally the only person in this photo not watching he's got resting business face so there's one person looking up at the jumbotron and he's looking at i don't ben simmons maybe it looks like he's probably looking at the jumbotron as well i assume the shot because of the angle is probably blocked by the backboard so he's watching it on the big screen but he has no reaction to the jumbotron and the shot bouncing up and down it'd be great if we could see a shot of jim treliving losing his fucking mind like oh he hit it i'm sure oh that's interesting here i can uh what's this pull that off screen let me watch the shot i'll pull up a video of the shot
Starting point is 01:11:24 and see if we can find him are we gonna ruin brad treliving's debut with the leafs when we find out his dad is a sixers fan oh he was like no and he's like shit fuck review it god damn it there's a travel travel i'm gonna call it a travel for years and years yeah he's got to be in in this footage so he would have been oh i can't get jesse scanning this for anybody oh we can't show audio okay so he is he's right in there right in there yeah this is not the kawaii shot anymore this is the jim trill living zapruder film i cannot believe this fucking shot went in and it's crazy i can't see him jumping oh maybe this angle we will find this we are so finding
Starting point is 01:12:18 this everybody around him is standing right so he's sitting down so it's hard to see him from any other angle but i can't i can't determine whether or not he did indeed jump for joy what a truly stupid shot we don't have a conclusive decision so the ruling on the field stands 15 yard penalty for holding i i i can't watch that shot enough oh yeah it's great i just can't i can't thank you by the way for bringing in a giant poster of the shot for the office yeah you're asking about it yeah you want to pick one up and i was like i have one that show bring it in that shot happened right around the time that everly was born uh and uh and so we're probably at the fourth year anniversary of that shot or close to may 12th may 12th oh there you go
Starting point is 01:13:01 jeez wow yeah it's bonkers i i yeah i remember being like i remember that that championship run and mostly i remember being up late with everly who would wake up every two hours because that's kids too um anyway it's a uh it's a fascinating time to be a leaf fan i don't think the sky is falling by any stretch what i want to know i i'm i'm less interested now and i really haven't been totally interested in and who's going to be the gm because we knew who it was going to be my personal opinion now is what is the direction and they can talk a bunch of shit tomorrow about well we want to like it's going to be very pierre dorian well we're a team that's what tomorrow is going to be we're a team and we want a culture we want this one they have a culture they have a
Starting point is 01:13:47 team show me okay you've made it to the second round of the mountain show me how you're going to get to the third show me how you're going to get to the fourth i want to know and they're not going to tell us anything shy of announcing a trade tomorrow i just don't care well and i think we will go through the press conference and and and absolutely overanalyze everything because that's what we're supposed to do yeah but i and i i think that'll be fun but at the end of the day they're going to show us in their actions and you know we do have the report from cj that shanny called all the core four and said you guys are you know left with the impression that they are sticking around here's the thing about pro sports is people lie and plans change and um and i'm not
Starting point is 01:14:26 saying that shanny's lying to them but if they find out in a week that they've got a trade on the table that makes them better bye-bye uh down goes brown can't wait to find out what offhand comment true living makes at the press conference that causes the Leafs to drastically change their entire opinion on him oh shit that's man you've been good do you think Brendan will speak as
Starting point is 01:14:48 well do you think it'll be the two of them up there we'll do the intro do you think he's going to field questions and if so do we get dubious questions oh a hundred percent a hundred percent and he
Starting point is 01:15:04 will be directly asked hey why did it never seem like there was another legitimate candidate someone's gonna ask it and he's gonna say oh yeah we interviewed plenty of people there were a lot of candidates and this was the guy like i can tell you the answer right now it's not gonna be any answer high quality person yeah we hired this is the we we went through all the candidates this is the best one for the julian said julian did say that he he really loved his interactions with brad he's like for what it's worth i i was sorry to see him go yeah i've been poking around and um a lot of good person stuff so that's good i i know like people at mlse were very sad um and not because like oh dubas was probably gonna make a big trade or something like like
Starting point is 01:15:48 i don't think that gets them happy or sad i think they were sad because a guy who treats them with respect and dignity on a day-to-day basis is leaving right and that wasn't always the case in hockey and especially with the leafs no um well and like lou who i don't know if he ever treated anyone badly there was definitely an air of fear sure um with regard to him so there wasn't quite that with with kyle but i hear a lot of good things um with true living as a guy so hopefully um hopefully this is good news for the people who work at mlse who do a really really good job even if the team on the ice doesn't always yeah um luke fox uh did say that But True Living has already made contact with Austin Matthews agent, Judd Moldover or Moldaver.
Starting point is 01:16:41 They have a good relationship anyway. And there have been multiple reports. And I urge you to believe them. For some reason, everybody believes the Brian Burke comment from like four years ago where he was like, he's going on Arizona. He got in our walls. Stop it. Austin does want to sign here. And True Living and Moldaver have a good relationship.
Starting point is 01:17:03 they're already talking and he hasn't even signed the contract yet and austin just wants to know that this team is going to win and and same thing we all want that too austin desperately wants to play in an abandoned radio shack no exactly listen he might not stay here he ain't going there i'm not i'm just not worried about it um i was trying to look um we can save it for next show when we analyze it to death but i was going to look at the client list for uh who the flames have signed so last show i i talked about uh dubis and um if he takes the job in pittsburgh which now seems up in the air the leafs are inevitably going to make a trade with them because former GM gets fired, goes to another team.
Starting point is 01:17:56 They always bring over someone, always bring over someone. Now, who's Brad going to try to pry out of Calgary? Oh. Is my question, right? Like, who are him and Craig Conroy going to make a deal regarding? Good question. I think there's an interesting potential there. That's it.
Starting point is 01:18:17 Yeah. and and you want yeah you i think pittsburgh calgary instantly become potential trade training partners um uh i i actually i want to bring up the dubious thing because mark madden on 105.9 the x in in pittsburgh was saying yesterday that uh that according to one source they had one source saying the deal was almost done uh just a few things what have you heard and that's why you get more than one source well frank sir of all he was uh reporting that uh it's not done it's not done and there are whispers out there that dubas straight up rejected the offer interesting so it is picante and and i will say like you know a lot of people
Starting point is 01:18:57 aren't in love with the fact that it seemed to be bradshaw living right from the beginning um that's what pittsburgh's had with dubas pittsburgh seems to be the dam right pittsburgh is what's holding all of this up and dubas is now holding pittsburgh up which means dubas is holding everybody up do you think that um i don't hold that against him it's his right it's it pittsburgh could easily just be like you know what we can't wait any longer let's move on do you think but they're not doing that they want this guy they want them and and maybe i'm assuming usually it's money like once you got the money figured out you can figure everything else out family situation you got to figure out pittsburgh's a great city for your family and if you're worried
Starting point is 01:19:39 about getting back to ontario it's like an hour and a half flight i don't know what his wife does for work you got to figure out where your kids are going to go to school you know it's it's a tricky thing sure but that's not holding up this deal you figure all the rest of that out it's money that's holding up this deal that's 100 that has to be what it is fenway that well here's my thinking uh is it possible that dubas was expecting one number and got another and or or has he just readjusted his number completely because the leafs were presented with a new compensation package and i wonder if he thinks his his market rate is higher than what the leafs or potentially maybe the penguins are willing to offer one thing dubas has as well is leverage on a whole bunch of other
Starting point is 01:20:26 teams because a report that came out yesterday i believe from frege and 32 thoughts is that there are some teams in the league not considering letting go of who they have within the organization but restructuring so that there's a position in their organization for kyle dubas so whether it's an assistant to the president or if it's an adjacent gm president role within that upper echelon of hockey management there's a lot of teams within the league right now who just want to bring kyle dubas into the organization for his knowledge and for what he can bring to a hockey team so he has so much leverage here with pittsburgh so where he can say i can go to the lightning and just be an assistant and hang out you know and be um a consultant to the president
Starting point is 01:21:13 you know and just get paid a whole bunch of money and be have an easy job so kyle dubas has a lot of power right here so i'm not surprised that the contract negotiations are taking a lot longer than we thought they would the other one is there are multiple suitors for the ottawa senators these owners uh are not going to be going in with their pants down they are going to be they're going to have presidents and or gms already in place and i wonder if one of the suitors for the ottawa senators i don't know which group ponied up some cash and said kyle you can have a position running your childhood team fuck what he already did it's because he ran the sue st murray greyhounds sorry your other childhood team that is the show the ottawa
Starting point is 01:22:03 senators the ottawa senators man um it's but it's what do you do because you don't know who's gonna win and then you could potentially be out of a job right like teams are really gonna have to restructure there are jobs for kyle there are jobs for kyle but like there's some really good ones available sure you know what i mean there's other ones that are really good too they're going to be filled yeah no no not for a talented hockey guy who's going to be in the fraternity for the next 50 years so the other thing here platinum seat ghosts made a really good point on hockey twitter like for an organization that gets clowned on at every absolutely every opportunity boy people sure seem to like hijacking former leaf staff like how many assistant coaches well
Starting point is 01:22:51 we had spencer carver he's going to be the head coach of the capital of the capitals uh how many assistant coaches have moved on all the players claimed off waivers and now people tripping over themselves to try to get kyle dubas who supposedly did such a shit job can't get the team over the hump and all these teams aspiring to have playoff success and win the stanley cup are like kyle they're wearing out the knees in their pants begging and pleading with him to come and join their team it's just
Starting point is 01:23:21 I just think it's funny how I think the Leafs employ some very smart people and can't fucking win with those smart people fuck try analyzing the Toronto Maple Leafs it's impossible it's impossible
Starting point is 01:23:36 it will be fascinating to see what happens you've heard us talk about this before It's the fourth annual Lorne Wright Co-Ed Slow Pitch Tournament in honor of Lorne and in support of the Kids Help Phone and Bereaved Families of Ontario Durham chapter. The tournament is held in memory of Lorne Wright, who was lost at the age of 18, May 28th, 2014, to suicide. There is a silent auction. There is monetary donations available. And if you want to be a diamond sponsor like SDPN, because we are, it's a $250 donation with your company name or logo. And you're going to actually be shown off on the banner at the tournament as well.
Starting point is 01:24:14 If you'd like to be a part of it, check it out on Facebook. Search up Lauren Wright with a W. Lauren Wright Memorial Co-Ed Slow Pitch Tournament. Okay, so Jesse, you wanted to talk about the Nashville Predators and Barry Ice Cold Trots. Yeah, who knew? who knew that barry trotz had ice in his veins he just pointed at it like he's fucking d'angelo russell but there's no big deal here jesse they only hired their head coach yesterday oh yeah but and then the hours before they fired their current head coach like i don't know if it's if it's dirty
Starting point is 01:24:47 explain this story first off because not everybody knows it so uh john hines uh the former head coach of the nashville predators uh was let go yesterday and the entire time that uh barry trotz the incoming general manager now gm of the national predators uh was looking for a new coach head coach john hines was employed and yesterday we we found out that he made his decision it was andrew burnett and they're bringing in andrew burnett he's giving a new head coach national predators and it's not the great greatest practice in the world to have your head coach sitting there while your general manager his boss is openly looking for his replacement and saying hey we're gonna keep you employed and if i don't find somebody that i like better than you then you're
Starting point is 01:25:33 still the head coach i think if you are going to let go of your head coach for the new guy and do all of this you let him go you let him go find one of the many other jobs that are on the table this offseason because this it was a little it's not really unprecedented but it was busier than usual in the coaching carousel this season could have gone to washington could have gone to some of the other team and there's i thought more would come to mind i thought yeah i thought you're gonna list them off but like there's more teams that are gonna come up because calgary still needs a head coach um new york still needs even though it looks like um that's gonna be laviolette anaheim still needs a head coach like i already said that yeah uh even though you guys for three
Starting point is 01:26:14 weeks thought that sutter wasn't fire that was weird i forgot um uh it's just it reeks of dirty business when you're treating your head coach like this when you are yourself one month on the job also like you're a coach like wouldn't you'd you'd think you'd you'd think he would go above and beyond for one position in the organization and that would be head coach yeah and for somebody who's so long tenured within the game of hockey you'd think there'd be some more respect paid to the other parties in these negotiations in searching for his replacement while he's actively employed let let the man go search for a job if you're going to let him go there's no reason to hold him back it's it just reeks of a lot of uncomfortable conversations
Starting point is 01:27:06 what because because he's still employed and you're actively hiring a new guy to replace him and you're never going to see anyone criticize barry trotz no that's the thing like there's there's hints of of you know the words that hockey people use when something's like abhorrent but they can't say it bad guy i didn't like this you know like that's the the furthest i've read and heard about how it's gone and i know fans aren't happy with how it's kind of gone but in terms of people within the game and media people it's a lot of you know it's not great but and then they move on to andrew minette's gonna be a great guy for the team and all that stuff but nobody really wants to focus on hey they did john khan's kind of dirty here now i just i just want to at least
Starting point is 01:27:49 acknowledge it uh claude lozelle and dave poolin were let go by shanahan in august and basically ghosted yeah um uh here my counterpoint to you jesse respectfully is it's sports and if you have an opportunity to get better maybe they expected john heinz to be the coach and then uh they thought you know what let's just talk to andrew brunette and they're like oh shit this guy is way better it could have and like that feels sort of like it that's how it could have been what we learned from the shanahan dubas saga recently is these things happen very fast well yeah i mean like it took two seconds for him to be replaced yeah and like true living felt like it took weeks but ultimately i think they made their minds up very fast yes can i can i read to you from
Starting point is 01:28:39 the tennessee and please that i had uh i was reading and please always read to us from the tennessee my not just today but all days my favorite paper the tennessee and every morning i have my cup of best espresso and i read from the tennessee we need a photo jesse orders for coffee photo of you best espresso drinking a coffee in nashville reading the tennessee and we're gonna be there yeah you can get an actual copy of the tennesseean my favorite news who wrote this you can maybe even meet the author gentry ites oh man am i saying that meet am i saying that correctly gentry s s s s uh now i gotta go find the man's name is and gentry
Starting point is 01:29:26 is that what his name is gentry gentry gentry i would say gentry because that's a word okay awesome this is from the tennessee and from gentry uh trot said he interviewed six candidates and narrowed it down to three finalists while still keeping heinz in limbo as a backup option it wasn't until tuesday trot said that he broke the news to heinz finally pulling out the scissors and cutting the safety net with Heinz's seat still warm for Brunette. This is a quote from Trotz. That is very aggressive. I'm sure it happens all the time,
Starting point is 01:30:00 said Trotz of interviewing head coaching candidates with Heinz still employed. I'm sure it happened here when I was here as a coach. You don't fire a coach and not have another one ready. It wouldn't be any different probably in your job. And then Gentry, our favorite writer in the world, follows up that quote from Trotz saying, actually i hope and trust that it would be different in my job i'd imagine you would do mr barry trotz that's not how business is done and i hope they don't do that it's it's so it's
Starting point is 01:30:35 like listen the cold way adam is putting it is valid that uh listen you're trying to run a business here you're trying to run it as well as possible fuck your feelings i'm just trying to make it so that the nashville predators win yep uh but it really feels like you didn't need to do it that way you didn't need to do it that way at all you had six candidates so like there was no shortage of you're not begging people to hire the nashville predator really he had seven candidates because john heinz was on his list but he could have been the coach yeah no you know i just he could have been one of them he did it i think he did a decent enough job with like uc soros and by the end of the season a bunch of creative players like by the end get a job he'll get a job oh you
Starting point is 01:31:25 definitely but by the end of the season and no disrespect to the preds i know it was a lot of young guys but like their roster was unrecognizable by the end of the season like phil thomasino is like your most recognizable name he's played like fucking four games and with the he'll get a job thing this isn't a boohoo john heinz situation because he has one year left on his contract the dude is gonna get his money and he can sit at home and just relax if he wants to it's just the business side of it i don't think he barry trotz is like this happens all the time this i don't think you needed to do this i'm just i'm surprised that predators ownership that through their history has sort of been on and off stingy uh was like yeah yeah no no we'll we'll get andrew brunette
Starting point is 01:32:12 who you know he really only has one season of head coaching experience and that's not even a full year granted it went great but still it's yeah it's one year and it's not even a full year we're gonna get this guy bring him in and we're gonna pay john hines to sit at home Maybe the hope is they know other teams out there like John Hines and they'll take him off their hands and therefore take that contract. That's true. By the way, I was really hoping the Babcock rumors meant another team was taking his contract,
Starting point is 01:32:48 but apparently it's just expiring. This is the last year of the deal. The Babcock deal. Will Sheldon Keefe make it to the day that contract expires? Yes, he will. we will see yeah we're pretty sure you will um i have had uh i had a situation once where i got hired for a job and i knew i was replacing one person uh but what they didn't tell me is that day they were going to let 13 people go so i walked in in the afternoon to my first day on
Starting point is 01:33:21 the job and 13 people that morning had been let go so it does happen in other industries media is notoriously bad for that uh and that was a really hard day because you know you're meeting all your co-workers for the first time uh and um i was supposed to be doing i knew i was going to move to uh an evening show but they're like actually we've let go of the uh evening afternoon part of the morning and and also a bunch of people at some other stations as well you'll be doing afternoons for this foreseeable future until we can replace the afternoon show so i did that and we were so short-staffed that we got one day off a week for five months oh my god and that's what it was you're just rolling that summer that was it was a it was bonkers it was crazy and and
Starting point is 01:34:06 and so i i tell you like it does that sort of thing doesn't totally shock me i understand what you're saying jess but i'm like well i think uh it's you know competitive industries are competitive industries and i feel like um if barry trotz is going to come in and make his mark uh he's got to do it in a sort of a a thoughtful manner on behalf of the predators and not on behalf of john heinz's future right and that's where you know i feel like you know john heinz is probably still under contract anyway right i'll probably get paid yeah that's what i was just saying yeah so it's not a boohoo john heinz like he still has the one year left yeah i had a co-worker who for months and months i was like i don't think this person likes me
Starting point is 01:34:48 okay and it was like on principle like i didn't i barely had any interactions with this person And I'm like, man, they really don't like me. Okay. And they reached out months later and they're like, hey, sorry if I've been a dick to you. It's just I always viewed you as this manager's guy because I was hired by that manager and that manager had demoted. Oh, wow. So basically anyone brought in from this guy, fuck that guy. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 01:35:14 That's a really aggressive way to look at it. Well, they apologize. Well, that's nice. I appreciate the fact. It made me feel good to be like, okay, I was right. They didn't like me. I did get a good read on that. I was barely certain this person hated my guts, and it turns out they did.
Starting point is 01:35:33 I just think it's a fascinating start to the Barry Trotz era again in Nashville. GM era. Harry Trotz. Barry Trotz 2.0. Harry Barry 2 pecked. It is cold-blooded mayor. it is now official brad true living is officially the toronto make beliefs general manager they're announced by the team not announced by the team yet but all the insiders are out with it and
Starting point is 01:35:57 they're all saying it right now yeah but they're the media yeah the text messages went out to all of them so amazing yeah anyway good for them uh let's do the conference good for them i don't mind it the presser sdp the steve dangle press conference all right let me pull this up here uh one thing i wanted to bring to the table was a story we've loosely covered along the way as there's been more and more uh news about it uh diamond sports group uh went bankrupt a couple months ago you might remember us talking about it they owned a whole bunch of sports uh media rights in across the four major sports except for football um they owned a whole bunch of mlb rights and nhl rights and there are things up in the air with how uh if they're bankrupt how could
Starting point is 01:36:50 they afford to keep broadcasting these games if they can't pay the teams and on tuesday they they missed one of the first final notice payments you know if you like you miss a hydro bill or something they'll like send you a notice and be like oh this is past due and they'll send you another one be like this is really due and then they'll send you one that's like now it's actually do we're gonna shut your shit up we're turning this over to collections yeah it's gonna affect your credit rating so the san diego san diego padres on tuesday had a deadline with diamond sports group and they had a hey this is actually due deadline not just a past due deadline where if you don't give us our money today we get you're in bankruptcy but you have you have liquidated
Starting point is 01:37:31 some assets you have some money you have to give us the money for our tv rights or we are taking them back. And now we will own them along with MLB. And on Tuesday, Diamond Sports Group did not make the payment. And the San Diego Padres now have their TV rights back. And what they're doing now is they have several channels that they are going to air over the air. They're going to be on DirecTV and a couple of the local other stations. So they have some rights that those stations have purchased from the Padres. And they're also throwing it on a subsection of the MLB TV app. So if you pay, it's $19.99 a month. You can purchase that every month and you get all San Diego Padres games. No matter where you are, you can just buy it. And now the games exist
Starting point is 01:38:16 on the app. Wow. So this is the first one of the whole group. There's a whole bunch of teams. I had the list here. There's the Diamondbacks, the Guardians, the Rangers, the Reds, the Twins. They're in flux with Diamond because Diamond owns some of their rights. And then there's also the angels and braves and cardinals um they're also they own parts of their streaming rights to diamond so there's a more than um double digits in mlb teams here that could have their streaming rights back to themselves and they could be all moving towards the future of sports television where it's just hey it's on a fucking app no matter where you are you can just find it which is what we want you can just watch the game imagine so imagine and imagine the app didn't
Starting point is 01:39:03 just log you out for no reason at all and make you jump through 40 hoops to get logged back in that isn't your password okay I'll enter the exact same one yep that's the password thank you I have the let me pull up the official tweet from the pod all the info when is it when it when
Starting point is 01:39:19 the streamers just gonna pick this up man it they just make it so much easier like the MLS deal is so great just watch whatever you want whenever you want to watch it and watching although I have to say watching Blue Jays on Apple TV is weird because they have no commercials but they still have commercial breaks yeah and it just scans the field it's like just let the announcers talk man it's very weird okay we're gonna go to break
Starting point is 01:39:39 and it's just camera pan they gotta take camera gotta go potty so here was the official tweet from the san diego padres mlb will take over production and distribution of all local padres games starting 531 the new arrangement gives fans the option to now watch on tv or stream digitally without local blackouts subject to a national game what san diegans can now watch padres games in market both live and on demand through a new mlb tv single team padre subscription additionally padres games remain available locally on tv for 2023 on the channels below and that includes directv att cox and spectrum and it's yeah 20 bucks a month all games all season one that's 162 free seven day trial future streaming the future of uh sports rights the
Starting point is 01:40:34 getting rid of regional blackouts will happen in our lifetime i'm talking it into existence it is the scourge of watching sports and anything fuck off that's enough that's enough we just we don't need it we've evolved past needing it figure it out figure it well there's this deal that i don't give a shit figure it out if there's a game on i should be able to watch it i'm a paying customer there's a game on i should be able to watch it eat shit wow i'm trying to pull up the uh the figure for the amazon playoff game because amazon purchased an nfl game it's a wild card weekend game for the first round of the playoffs one of those games will be exclusively on streaming okay in the states so that's going to be the first time ever they did that i think it's 175 million
Starting point is 01:41:26 dollars for that one game um but the nfl is always because they're the biggest tv sport uh in north america and and uh they're always kind of ahead of the curve with these rights because all these tech companies want in on that and this is this is the first domino for them is amazon paying for this playoff game how many million i think it was 175 i was looking for the number there's so many million yeah for a single game okay all right well that's it's a lot it's a lot of milk and honestly amazon doesn't like if here's the thing if you're a streamer like when those hockey rates come up i'm curious to see how batman handles it because he's not wanted to and i don't think in the states he really had many offers to go to like a street a full-blown streaming site but from from
Starting point is 01:42:11 what i've heard the headache it is to watch nhl on espn or even sometimes on turner um i'm fascinating to see in canada if you want to dominate the entertainment landscape in canada buy the hockey rights uh for your streaming platform and then put it in uh put it in along with all the other shit that you have other all the other great shows that you have i wonder if that's the next sort of horizon and sdpn check the couch for the coins i think i think that um the rogers pays more money per minute than sdpn's worth in the entire year for that deal so you're telling me there's a chance there's a chance there's a chance a long down far away chance it's fun it's long it's gonna be far uh i'll ask this question from our
Starting point is 01:43:01 press conference uh questions channel on our discord server let's get those messed up this is from turbo turbs 94 steve they just want clarity on are you gonna be doing watch the stanley cup finals uh like what on sportsnet yeah no on their youtube channel no no not for these playoffs okay no you are are you going to be watching the stanley cup finals yeah that's what i want to know i like hockey i'll be watching it there you go no i was so only mrs dangle will be able to watch a game with steve dangle yeah well i mean you know any of my friends could come to my house and watch the game right maddie jesse thanks man actually it is fun to watch games with you over facetime so actually well you can come over now because like you could get up at
Starting point is 01:43:48 like eight even like quarter after what i can stay up past nine isn't it yeah it's been a decade man it's been a long time i want to get this in from there goes that man again we didn't touch on we haven't done like a stand like a preview yet on this show um but we'll go over all this okay we still have two weeks before it starts yeah but we'll go i assume we'll touch on that a little bit more on friday we'll talk yes of course florida of course and to prep for that there goes that man again on our discord wrote a list of storylines in the finals it's a very good list interesting both teams this is one both teams looking for their first cup yes two who is the biggest villain in the league right now florida or vegas oh vegas panthers looking to redeem
Starting point is 01:44:37 themselves after talon's folly i mean i feel like that's marcia so and riley smith so march so riley smith one of them scoring the dagger would be unreal number four barkov first finnish captain ever to make the finals and subsequently could be the first captain ever to win the Stanley Cup. Five long rest. The long rest debate. That's going to be an interesting one.
Starting point is 01:45:07 I'm really fascinated about that one. Yeah. Touching the trophy, the conference trophies. Who touched it? I don't know. I think Florida did. Vegas didn't. I think they didn't because they did
Starting point is 01:45:23 the last time and they lost. okay you have to hope florida wins enough of this enough of this yeah i hate that that is one of the dumbest ones you know uh panthers facing the murderers row of the nhl the number one two four and now five best nhl teams wow that's the seven storyline eight biggest facing actual murderers in jamie ben not even five thousand dollar fine we didn't get to talk about that but jamie ben got swept oh and four be better should jamie ben should jamie ben have sat out the last game yeah it might have been it might have been a better day that game wasn't even close no it was i don't know if you guys watched it but the first like two minutes vegas was so fast and the game
Starting point is 01:46:07 was over it was over it was over i also was like people were like shitting on jake ottinger i'm like well his team could do something in front of him yeah he had no they could they could do anything literally anything in front of him no they made keegan colasar look like fucking pavelberg like that was that they just didn't show up they had a bad night vegas's fourth line might be one of the best fourth lines in the entire league yeah um unreal we'll talk plenty about that but um number eight both teams are a large collection of cast offs and miss misfits yes yep nine both teams significantly helped out in the community after recent ish uh tragedies yeah well that's good yeah you want that uh they're a number of years ago five years ago
Starting point is 01:46:46 recent ish uh sabers reunion of eichel verse reinhardt slash montour oh number 11 is my favorite eichel getting the cup slash getting to the finals before connor mcdavid oh man does jack eichel win the mcichael bowl if he wins the cup yeah right i mean no but listen listen no still no no still not even close i think uh he wins the mick won the cup first bowl that's all i think i think mcdavid's got a couple cups in his future that was point number 12 uh that was 11 11 i'm very surprised we haven't reached a very obvious one sends reunion of amadio slash stone versus duclair slash white all right that's not i don't think that's a big that is a real stretch that's a reach it's a reach of a storyline all right uh matthew freaking
Starting point is 01:47:41 kachuk and his business idea for a mouth guard flavored bubble gum now you're just making them up uh has wrath rat hugh kachuk officially inherited the nhl's title of rat king from marshand no no marshand is king rat no radko has always been an asshole to play against though and I like that Radco Radco goodness. He's saying rat you but oh, oh, oh, right. You check. Oh, Adam, I got to be done. I'm tired. Phil
Starting point is 01:48:10 Castle show Friday Friday. I'm Phil Castle. Watch Jonathan quick. Watch Alex Lion. Watch Officer Bob on the case. Yep. Mark Stone for Stanley Cup finals performance versus Barkov first Barkoff for
Starting point is 01:48:26 playoff Selkie winner Southern most finals ever bruce cassidy in the finals after boston tears party that's a good hashtag that fired him in his fucking now that that exactly he got fired in his living room and now he's in the state and now he could win the stanley cup fuck you boss his day with the cup needs to feature him taking a photo with the cup in the chair they fired oh my god if that was me fucking a i'm doing how do you not root for him for that i'm blowing it up and putting it on a billboard that's steve that is awesome yeah yeah now okay now we're all vegas fans i'm signing it and sending it
Starting point is 01:49:09 straight to cam neely thanks for joining my team yeah uh paul maurice in the finals after uh leaving winnipeg uh cal uh kachuk bennett and lomberg in the finals after calgary vegas strip versus south beach vacation destinations ranked okay the battle of the vacay how many fucking storylines i think this person just missed a very obvious one unless they you already said it one last one all right uh this is number 25 it was 25 storylines wow this is 25 by far the most important story they say uh which team winning would embarrass the leafs the most uh vegas oh yeah what florida beat the leafs that's not embarrassing if they go on and win the cup then it's not embarrassing because they just lost to the stanley cup winner yeah but the leafs in vegas in vegas because then
Starting point is 01:50:03 then as a diluted leaf fan you could tell yourself well beating the well they would have maybe they would have had a chance beating the leafs is the stanley cup final kiss of death though yeah it's true actually boston boston in 2013 boston in 2019 uh montreal in 2021 and tampa last year four wow that's a lot you guys didn't settle on an embarrassing oh and well this year they got florida i still think it's embarrassing if florida loses it's more embarrassing if florida loses or here's where it's where it's more embarrassing for the leafs uh vegas's stanley cup winning goal is scored by michael amadio or ben hutton or phil kessel or byron phrase although phil kessel or no for phil kessel michael amadio they gave up on on like he would be a good bottom
Starting point is 01:50:52 six option for them and they gave up on him on waivers what about he just wouldn't play him what if carter for haig he scores the stanley company oh fuck that's not also that was also not embarrassing that was another that was lou lamorello's first year as gm it was also like at the time we got to get over those trades so they didn't mention the storyline you want to bring up i i feel like i must have missed it luongo's first ring oh no that's not that's a good one yeah he works in the panthers organization that's the first time back to the final yeah they'll give him a ring for sure oh definitely yeah yeah name on the cup i i think so he'll definitely hoist it yeah but i don't i don't know about name
Starting point is 01:51:31 because you gotta fit the players and assisted like is he high enough on on the what is the organizational chart let me see to get the name on the cup luong i don't know i'm not doing it i'm too lazy it's too towards the end of the show adam does something in the front office if the leafs win the stanley cup does steve get a day with the cup yes you have to talk it into existence yes i would like you know what this is something he's been saying for a little bit now and i don't know how it's gonna happen you gotta bring it to my No, there's no circumstance in which it makes sense. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:52:06 But I hope it happens for you anyway. Yeah, me too. I do. I mean, like, I don't know how they make that. They're like, you know what? We won the cup. I don't need a day. I don't need a day.
Starting point is 01:52:20 Let me hold it. No, that's completely different. They would tell you to go to the Hockey Hall of Fame to hold it. I don't know if you know this. They don't let you hold it. You've been telling me. Oh, okay. Steve Dangle, you've been telling me that the Cup's going to come to your house in Ajax
Starting point is 01:52:34 and you're going to have a day with it and Carlton the Bear is going to come as well. Carlton the Bear and John Tavares is going to hand it to me. He's going to hold my legs while I do a keg stand on it. After the captain, Steve Dangle. Yeah, this is on the ice. Yeah, this is on the ice. I want the Stanley Cup to one day be in the blue room. I think CJ's had the Stanley Cup at his dad's house, is it?
Starting point is 01:52:59 or he went over to the keeper of the cup's house every i think it was his dad's house so that's not out of the realm of possibility that you could just get that for the blue room but i'm talking about leafs win the cup and they make the exception to add steve no i'm just gonna take up so much room because it's gonna be steve dangle glen and he's gonna have to sign it and it'll take 40 years to just oh yeah i think i i do think the leafs need to do something for their fans when they do finally win the cup like a parade not no no the for the no better that's for the team they need to do a monthly hey you stuck with us through all of this thank you yes tickets are free the
Starting point is 01:53:50 whole next year yeah no they're not gonna do that why not no because it's got to be something that doesn't hit at the pocketbook but it would be nice like could you have like a fan stanley cup wall where if you donate one dollar to charity uh your name shows up on a wall as a donate like they do a big donation thing i don't know something the family cup see we're going somewhere here family we got we got an idea all right now we're cooking with gas let's go hell yeah oh yeah Hell yeah. I want it. All right.
Starting point is 01:54:20 At my house. Let's wrap it up. Sure. And I'll bring a confetti cannon. Let's overanalyze everything that Treleving and Shani have to say on the next show. Also, teeing up game one of the Rat Bastards versus the Rat Bastards. You know what? This is actually going to be one of the better Stanley Cups I think we're going to see.
Starting point is 01:54:40 This is going to be fun. Definitely, man. Thanks, buddy. Appreciate it. Dave Dangle Podcasts. Powered by Sports Interaction. Want to bet? Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle,
