Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Taskers across Canada book up fast, especially for same-day tasks. Get $15 off your first task right now with the promo code Dangle at TaskRabbit.ca or the TaskRabbit app. You should
Starting point is 00:01:10 download that. TaskRabbit.ca. Code Dangle. It's over, baby. All right, Jesse, let's just play the clip oh yeah just play the clip okay here's craig berube from last night what did you learn about your team on this homestand what did i learn about them yeah well that we gotta we gotta keep the puck out of our net is what i learned and we didn't do that here at home other than detroit game it's the only game we did um but until we decide to do things right and keep the puck out of our net and that's the goalies included this is what you're gonna get we scored enough goals on this homestand to win games. But we didn't keep the puck out of our net.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Until you want to keep the puck out of your net, and that's a couple things. Managing the game, puck play, don't give odd man rushes up. Defend harder than we are. More desperation in defending, and goalies stop the puck. That's it. Well, we could score goals. We score goals.
Starting point is 00:02:19 But until we want to keep the puck out of our net, this is what we're going to get. There's no more than that. I don't want to talk about it anymore. That's all it is. I don't need to learn anything about our team. I know our team. And they're capable of doing it.
Starting point is 00:02:32 So, you know, we can do it. You mentioned the goalies. Leafs were outscored 25-12 over five games at home. Jesus H. Let me just give you some more quick stats. Mark Masters, Leafs finish. I'd prefer if you didn't. Homestand 0-4-1.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Only the third homestand of five or more games where they went winless all time. both others were in 1984-85 where they pick first overall at the end of that season Toronto is eight points out of a playoff spot as they head on the road for four games before the Olympic break and uh I think it's fair to say you know it we know it and the question will be today and going forward does Maple Leafs management know it do they recognize it can they recognize the moment and meet the moment and do they have the staff in place to do so you know so much of the last decade steve and jesse have been about what these guys have not been on the ice in crucial moments
Starting point is 00:03:34 but now it's management's turn because are they smart enough are they nimble enough are they able to put their egos aside i think that's the big one and finally recognize that they've made a few errors and in making those errors, can they even be allowed to fix those errors? Because there are four people I'm worried about today. All of Leafs Nation is united and we have spent years, last decade, going back and forth. Oh, if they just had the one save, if that guy hadn't been injured, if they just scored at that key moment. Oh, you know, overtime, it could go either way. They deserve to win a meter. They would have won six out of seven of those games, blah, blah, blah, blah blah the four people i am worried about today brad treliving keith pelly tony staffieri
Starting point is 00:04:18 who's the ceo of rogers and edward rogers those four people if they don't get it i'm going to suggest something bullying works we're all on one side they might all be on the other yeah bullying works let them know oh well adam from that lovely book that you forced me to read rogers versus rogers edward is completely divorced from reality completely so i don't expect him to pick up on any of this shit but let's stroke management's ego for a sec let's get down to the leafs level let's stroke their egos what if what if they made no mistakes what if every excuse is right you know what what if it's just a bunch of injuries it would still be the right time to sell you there are guys who aren't going to be back they're not going to be back so i'm not sure what
Starting point is 00:05:19 you're preserving trade them for assets and let them help you win next year because you're going to have those good things on top of the perfectly flawless team that you've already built that's the best case scenario i think worst case i think is they do nothing um and i think obvious cases they're not good enough you might as well sell you have to sell jesse what happened before last night's game that raised the stakes obviously they had a big game on friday everybody in in who follows hockey knows that was the mitch marner return to toronto game and we all know at this point lol how that three losses ago yeah but why was last night a bigger deal than the average tuesday night hockey game last night was daryl sitler night where they
Starting point is 00:06:11 celebrated the 10 point game that sitler had the record that still stands and looks like it's going to stand for quite a while now uh so they had sitler there all pre-game he spoke to the team and he talked about his his history with the leafs and he motivated them and then he actually brought a couple friends of his to give the team the starting lineup and i think this is this is a good little little video to show you what the team got before the game and who they let down with their performance on the ice hey guys this is an awesome honor for us you all know how important family is i got my two grandsons here freddie who plays hockey grandson sawyer who's a goalie and they're going to spell it out for
Starting point is 00:06:59 you guys go get them freddie all right boys let's go give me a beat Left wing, number 74, Bobby McVay! Number 34, Austin Matthews! Number 11, Max Domi! Number 22, Jake McKay! Number 95, Oliver Ekmanoshen! And in between the pipes, number 60, Joseph Moore! the toronto maple leafs let down daryl sittler's grandsons man that's what happened i'm fired up
Starting point is 00:07:44 i'm fired up watching that i am so disappointed in this franchise you know uh i i was i was thinking this morning i was getting real philosophical and to me the number one reason why you sell it's no longer that they won't um like and by won't i mean they won't live up to the moment they won't perform they won't outwork their opponent they won't do this they won't do that it's that they can't they can't how many times does this need to happen for it to just be oh it's actually just most of the time like it's not they fail in certain moments they at least had the decency to only only choke when it mattered most you know what back in my day the leafs only choked in game sevens you know now they're choking on tuesday for the good old days
Starting point is 00:08:45 and now they just i think when you choke all the time it's just you're bad yeah right and coming into the game like then the pregame media scrums craig berube and everybody who talks said this was a very important game they all know the stakes and they know where they sit in the standings going into that game and they said this is basically a must win every game out now is a must win and then they showed that performance had you heard jesse about a meeting with the leadership group yeah they met with the leadership group before the game uh was it sunday sunday i think that after after colorado or monday morning i forget the time colorado it was weird because it was afternoon yeah yeah the colorado game happens craig brube meets with them the next
Starting point is 00:09:23 day so that would have been monday yeah andreger talked about that a little so they had a meeting with the leadership group then they have that warm-up he gets scurril daryl sitler's wearing the jersey he wore the game that he scored 10 points 50 years ago by the way the maple leaf on that crest is so small uh the tiniest little maple leaf i've ever seen in my life look it's the maple that is the exact jersey which is crazy yeah and you know what's funny is uh uh harold ballard man uh too cheap to even spring for a decent crest damn it uh but i i i just well and you gotta ask yourself if we're in a better spot now no i'm not joking well at least i'm not joking in this at least they'll spend money just maybe not places yeah will they because all we heard
Starting point is 00:10:05 with the babcock stuff is them whining complained about having to pay him to not uh coach their team even though it was the right decision to fire him when they did in fact they should have got rid of him earlier which is the theme with this group so let me let me throw something out there rogers owns a majority stake in maple leaf sports and entertainment that's nine teams a bunch of them are like video game teams i don't know how much those cost you got an nhl team you have an nba team holy cow that's a lot of money you got an ahl team you have a uh mls team i believe they have the argos now yep they have the argos now and on top of that you have a one so on top of what's on the screen right now you have a 100 stake in the toronto blue jays of the mlb what
Starting point is 00:11:03 What are the odds on God's green earth that all these teams can compete at once? There isn't one. So we're all like, they got to fire this guy. They got to fire that guy. They got to fire that guy. They have so many people in the analytics department. That's too money. That's too much.
Starting point is 00:11:27 That's too much. We need to downsize, downsize, downsize, downsize. they're the ones who are going to pony up to fix this no this was always going to be the problem always going to be the problem when ed took over the majority stake in the leafs he is a jays guy he is a baseball guy and it's led to great results for the jays and fuck everybody else there's nine teams that are in his it's it's toy story when andy got buzz and the leafs are woody sitting behind the toy bin and everyone else is like the shark wearing the sombrero i'm woody howdy howdy and the new one the kid gets an ipad oh my god oh my god and
Starting point is 00:12:22 all the toys are like hey we're still here we're toys is that the actual plot yeah yeah that's really funny i've seen it obviously it's not out but that's the new new one it's about like technology that's really funny also kids still like toys but yes we're gonna go away from the point the point is that he only cares about one team but he has to for his ego own them all except for the wnba team ew women um that was what what point point out the lie hooray misogyny ew women ed rogers actual quote like wayne gretzky steve carell michael scott like no he has to it is a little weird that he has to own every fucking team in the city except that one women's team yeah yeah and also the scepters for those guys huh
Starting point is 00:13:09 he doesn't know any of those anyway that's getting away from the point let's pretend the jays are going to the postseason and the leafs are going to the postseason it's an exercise in make-believe okay stop the raptors are going to the postseason uh tfc is going to whatever soccer's postseason it's the postseason okay good but they haven't been there in a long time and it's gonna be a while okay but they all need a little they need something to get them over the top they're not spending on all of you they're not and what the Leafs need right now because they're a capped out team anyway is they got to get rid of some guys it actually costs money to get rid of some guys right this is a terrible ownership situation
Starting point is 00:14:04 it's actually really bad and i would say untenable and it's fueled purely by ego and if bullying works we got to get started too sweet because i don't think they're going to win shit with this guy at the helm well uh i i think uh i think that that's perhaps a little bit premature and i understand where it comes from oh yeah but i think no no let's wait i mean he does own the team that went to game seven of the of the world series after being horrible for like that was never the criticism the jays are always going to be his number one always i think and i like the jays it's nothing against i think what happens here is when you're somebody at his level you hire people to take care of this and you hire yes so i'm not worried about you read the
Starting point is 00:14:52 book you hire yes man yeah sure but i'm i'm not i i'm not worried about ed so much as i'm worried about tony and keith because you know keith pelly the the the new uh clip that will live in infamy is we're not just here to sell jerseys damn right i don't want to be humiliated in public and then they were selling a mitch marner signed jersey in a vegas golden knights mitch marner signed jersey at friday night's game very literally selling the opposition's jersey and i know it's for charity supposedly but i don't care that's stupid you don't do that can you imagine an epl team doing that give them the money they would they would riot give them the money yourself how much does that jersey go for like a thousand bucks get out of my face exactly and you know that's the that's
Starting point is 00:15:40 the part where i get worried about meeting the moment now i have heard from sources that sponsors of the maple leafs and this is what this will get your attention this will get your attention if you're a ceo hit me sponsors of the maple leafs are pretty upset because they paid a premium for board ads and and you know on the jumbotron and whatever um they are pissed and and not only because right now i i know i don't expect people to know this this is renewal season right now no it's it's you're planning for the playoffs which sports net's going to lose a ton of revenue if the leafs aren't in right a ton also owned by mlse well no no not oh sorry rogers they're all this it's all the same shit it's just one but yeah rogers it's like it's like
Starting point is 00:16:26 wearing cargo pants right you got i hate that south park was right we are six corporations yes and so when you start to see those dollars recede then then you get management's attention and it's happening quickly because here's the thing a lot of the corporate sponsors are based in toronto and their executives are leaf fans and they're going we're spending money on this because the difference is like when the Leafs were bad the last time it was bad on purpose and that's so much better than being bad by accident we were all behind them being bad on purpose and it was fun it was fun it was fun it was like hey we got this Marner kid tearing up the OHL Nylander's doing well in the AHL and Matthews uh man is it going to be Matthews or Liney are
Starting point is 00:17:14 they going to get the first overall pick I got to see the behind the scenes numbers when I worked sports net i was writing features about like colin smith and tobias linberg andrew nielsen and andrew nielsen and like literally prospects who didn't end up making it and uh they were top five top four top three top two top one on sportsnet.ca people were jacked to learn about the prospects on the marlies and this is the this is the part where um it gets it gets the attention of people because what what uh when you're in renewal season what are you selling what are you selling you're selling hope or you're selling wins cj always says that you're selling hope or you're selling wins right now there are no wins nope especially at home
Starting point is 00:18:05 very literally the fact that all this happened at home like if it happened on the west coast It's like, well, nobody was there to see. You imagine you're spending 80, 90, $100,000 for a private corporate box and you've taken clients to the last five games and they have gotten one point in the standings in those last five games. How are you feeling about that investment,
Starting point is 00:18:25 that justification, that expense against your business? I know it's a taxable write-off, but at the same time, you're like, yeah, that's still 80 grand though, bro. Yeah, Jesse, like I want you to address the rumors of the fans in the building during the third period. Yeah, people said everyone left, but that's not true. Thousands stayed behind to thunderously boo.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Yes, yes, yes. Was the booing loud? At one point in the, like halfway through the third when the Buffalo Sabres like put the game to bed, it got pretty loud with boos. It's funny because it was a half full building because most people left while it was getting out of reach. You can always tell too when the microphones
Starting point is 00:19:00 are a little turned down on the broadcast. Like when the booing of the national anthem happened, Sportsnet shut the microphones off. Yes, you couldn't hear it on TV. And when the booing happens at Scotiabank, they – I'm not saying that they don't. I'm not saying that they do. I'm just saying we couldn't hear the boos the way that you sent us an Instagram – like a video. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:23 And I was like, wow, it does not sound like that at all on TV, at all. And, you know, I think at this point the question becomes, okay, so we agree. We're Leafs Nation is going to be split right now, guys. We all agree something needs to change. We all agree there needs to be a sell. I think we're all anxious to know what management are thinking this morning. If I was the CEO, I'd go to Brad and say,
Starting point is 00:19:48 listen, you have a plan for me for the start of the Olympic break, which is like a week from now. And you have it on my desk about what you're going to do to retool this team a la the Boston Bruins last year. And if you don't, and if I don't like it, you're gone. Yeah, you don't.
Starting point is 00:20:01 That's what a decisive manager would do. You don't say, what's the plan? You go, you are selling. Yes. And then you say, how are you? Tell me, how are you selling? Yes. Like I've started.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Oilers fans are barking up the Leafs tree about Bobby McMahon. They should. So in last night, I was like, all right, what are the Oilers got? What do I want for Bobby McMahon? That's what the Leafs should be doing today. Well, and it's funny because we mentioned it on the show on Monday. And isn't it funny? It's made its way around the league real quick.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Nobody was talking about it before this weekend. Now, he's an Alberta boy. That's why it makes sense. Now, the question will be, gentlemen, and this is the thing that I got into. like i got into some good heated debates last night on the stream to you what does this look like because there are a lot of people today who are like etch a sketch wipe the slate clean somebody on the chat last night said trade matthews for two firsts i'm like that's really undervaluing austin matthews um i saw quentin byfield matthews trade proposal that was kipper
Starting point is 00:20:58 that yeah i i almost put my foot through the screen yeah no no like um and i love nick but no are you fucking kidding me dude um i i listen nick i i love nick he's made some bonkers trade proposals before what was it nick ritchie and nick ritchie for like mitch marner or something like that it was like okay me lander yeah cool man um my point is this what what do you think the retool looks like i'm gonna say rebuild is off the table and i'll tell you why rebuilds off the table for me because when you rebuild you acknowledge that you don't have any great players yes and when the Leafs rebuilt they finally came to the realization that you know ah damn Daniel Winnick and Tyler Bozak just aren't quite what we need and there were
Starting point is 00:21:49 guys worth keeping like Tyler Bozak yes but like Kadri even like that's not a great player right yeah like like top 20 we're talking great excellent elite i love without a doubt number one center and we're also talking like 20 we're talking like 2015 yeah right for any flames fans who are offended by that like he wasn't he just wasn't he was straight up was not he was a 40 point guy at the at best at that point their best player was phil kessel and then it's like okay do we build around a winger and i think everyone not named alexander ovechkin like the answer is no you don't like oh what about patrick kane well you can do that because of jonathan taves yeah and he's also patrick kane and who's ours who's our jonathan taves
Starting point is 00:22:42 tyler bozak yeah yeah yeah like it wasn't it wasn't there that's why they had to rebuild yeah i don't think this team my argument is nearly barren enough to do that my argument is that you build around austin matthews again and i said it on the on the stream last night and before everybody starts talking to me like we're on reddit please understand the nuance about what i'm about to say okay okay everybody i look at the greatest teams of my lifetime the greatest team of my lifetime greatest organization of my lifetime in professional sports are the new England Patriots they are unquestionably the best most successful no question it's impressive because they went to all those Super Bowls owning 10 professional sports teams what happened was
Starting point is 00:23:29 they won a bunch of Super Bowls in in young Tom Brady's career and then there was like a 10-year gap where they had to keep trying and rebuilding and rebuilding and rebuilding and then won a bunch of Super Bowls towards the end of his tenure in his 30s and when I mentioned this last night I had a bunch of people go well matthews isn't tom britt yeah i fucking get it man but when you have nine years in a row of making the playoffs you're gonna have a retool season at some point austin to me is the guy you build that around very quietly he's closing in on 30 goals very quickly here with a terrible start injuries whatever else he the offense if there was any offense to be had last night it went through him I mean the top line was to me what Craig
Starting point is 00:24:17 Berube was talking about what they they scored and I don't think he ever doubt but like how many goals were they out there for like goals against oh yeah Max Domi giveaway come on yeah brutal and and so I think it starts with you have Austin Matthews you can build around that yes I think you've got good goaltending and I don't know that you need to hang on to all of them I don't know how i think people are overestimating anthony stoller's and joseph wool's trade value you're just you're just simply not getting value back and also dennis hildeby is there and that's great too it's good to have depth at that position yeah but he's not clearing waivers next year so you need to make a decision there but not yet so jesse steve outside of to me austin and
Starting point is 00:25:02 to me the goaltenders who really aren't worth that much on the trade market i don't think goaltenders never are what do you believe that you need to hang on to like who is untradeable to me obviously you want to keep cowan you want to hero shot you win a matthews trade yeah can you are you willing to talk about jesse william kneelander yeah it depends on what you're getting back but i think i would much more likely move nice than willie i think there's a lot more assets you'd get back there i think because he's younger not unlike the austin matthews deal i think you'd lose the willie deal you do a yeah okay like to get the high end talent player that you're probably looking for to get in return it's probably nice
Starting point is 00:25:51 you have to give up and i look at nice as a guy who could be part of the solution like i again well-adjusted individuals don't win championships you need someone who's a little nuts and last night and eyes is like yeah i don't look at the standings i think we're gonna make the playoffs and i was like you know what god bless you i like you on my team yeah tavara said something similar yeah yeah well that's the mentality you have to have i agree what do you want him to say oh we quit i agree well just straight up i don't look at the standings was very funny to me yeah um but like there's a game the next day what are you gonna do exactly worry about 10 games from now yeah the the leafs are full of guys you don't have to trade um they could definitely be part
Starting point is 00:26:33 of the solution um i think oliver ekman larson is a hall waiting to happen um he's never going to be better than he is today and he doesn't fit your window you got to get rid of him um jake mccabe you probably keep but you look at for the same reasons but i just think his values in the toilet right now because he's just playing so awful i think he's hurt too he is hurt like he's very obviously hurting anyone trying to win a cup now is probably not trading for that player except for the oilers who traded for trent frederick um bobby mcmahon and scott lawton i think you have the same conversation uh with those two here is our number we're not willing to go above that number how does that number sound to you if the number sounds good you sign
Starting point is 00:27:21 him if the number sounds bad you trade both of them i don't think you do that with bobby mcmahon i think you go get the assets you can i'm with you jesse very valuable you're i think you're doing the thing where you're keeping too much of the team yeah you're probably right but if he says something like yeah i'll do three mil like okay no no even then go imagine what you can get he makes a million three one point three five you know what jesse i'm on board a million three for for trading this winger who's going to be very effective in a top six and it's like deceptively old yeah 30 it's gonna be 30 there's a lot of assets you can you can get something back for him that's significant that to me is more valuable than next year having bobby mcmahon at three
Starting point is 00:28:00 million dollars at whatever age he is keep keep lotten for the culture keep lot for the culture i like him for the culture i really do i i know i'm i'm super biased mr scott lotten man uh but i think you need you know one thing i would say the leafs didn't have when matthews neil Leonard Marner came in, was a culture guy. Nothing against JVR, Bozak, Codry, Riley, any of those guys. They were still young, but they're not like... They were sort of forced into the role.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Yeah, they're not dog-on-a-bone guys like Lawton is. I want Lawton... I want him to room with Easton Cowan. I want Easton Cowan to adopt every... Because Easton Cowan's got more talent. And if he can adopt Scott Lawton's attitude... He's still so young. He is.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Can I give you the list? I think it should be. and yeah instead of uh going through every name i think you keep austin willie cowan short list maybe why i would say and then lawton fine for the vibe let me ask a question probably let me ask a question unless you can trade i don't know if tana's gonna play yeah that's the problem let me ask a question because i i keep seeing nice crop up in these conversations and because he's so young i can't wrap my head around it why nice because there's an ability to move him wherever you want he right unlike willie he doesn't have a full no move he actually has no
Starting point is 00:29:18 trade protection it's a very reasonable contract for what you think he can be yeah and then you're getting a giant hole that could really retool your organization not unlike one of some of the blockbuster deals we've seen in recent memory for me because you have so much control there he has no trade protection and he's locked up your ask has to be completely insane that's what i'm talking about yeah yeah so if they give you that ask then you trade him otherwise you you have matthew nice you were like that's pretty good last season the rumors were ranting in a nice was a part of a ranting and deal that is a crazy thing that you can get yes for nice plus whatever it would be and what what i'm curious is what the other side of that looks like because ranting in is the buy
Starting point is 00:30:08 and the team selling Rantanen gets a player who's good now but going to be better later. Let me ask you a question. So what is the return for Anais is what I'm trying to understand. But you're kind of getting an idea of his value there. Now it's flipped where you're sending it to a team where they're buying Anais for the future and the present, and then you're getting something in that range of equivalent
Starting point is 00:30:30 of like a big good haul that'll retool your team for next season. Stellar point. let's say that they had a you know not traded the first round picks or whatever i asked this i think before but i'm gonna ask it again you know people are saying well what's available what's available well you're looking at right now this is a months long potentially a couple of 18 months long process right this is gonna take some time and i hope it doesn't what happens maybe what happens if the toronto maple leafs call the vancouver canucks when quinn hughes becomes available and goes let's build something around matthew nice yeah they might be able to
Starting point is 00:31:04 get them the Canucks remember when Quinn Hughes was became available oh like before right and Quinn Hughes is willing to sign an extension here well he can't he can't yet but he might but you you'd get a sense of smoke signal what do they call that but like with the Quinn Hughes thing you're not even looking at like hey can you sign extension we got Quinn Hughes for a year and a half that's really good yeah right chances with that right and I think yeah the biggest problem with this era of the Toronto Maple Leafs has always been their lack of number one defenseman they do not and you look at every single team that's won a cup again i go back to the way forsling is played and he was a waivers pickup headman first overall pick uh petrangelo before
Starting point is 00:31:43 headman uh who else won uh pittsburgh had chris letang letang people forget how like really good awesome letang was and they also kind of didn't they have a run where they basically didn't have letang yep and they like won by committee it was ron haynes yeah there was a ron and that's how we ended up with ron hazy here in toronto um uh you know you talk about drew dowdy and duncan keith in the early 2010s lidstrom before that you have you have to have a stud on char and they tried and tried and tried to make morgan riley that guy and morgan riley at his peak he did get over 70 points one season the the timing has never worked out because when morgan riley was at his best he was on an island yeah and he has probably a better supporting cast than he's ever had and he's
Starting point is 00:32:27 not close to that guy jesse let's continue with the list that you have you got the list i was just looking at puckpedia and that was the list well and like here let me throw another name out there you have nick waa one season left at three mil you could keep him you could trade him buddy you can if you're keeping lawton you trade waa because i 100 because i think waa is i think he's a very good hockey player he's an incredible hockey and i like the line that he's created with Cowan and I like every line he's on me too that's why I think any team like Nick Waugh is the guy they needed last season for their third yeah here's the real let's let's get real about this John Tavares is not a second line center going forward man if you're a hot start if you
Starting point is 00:33:12 have any intention of being great not good not barely making the playoffs not uh we're out in game seven if you have any intention of being great John Tavares is going to be your third line center going forward that's the truth you know I'd add Tavares to the list of guys you trade or he's kind of wave do you I think yeah you keep I think you have a choice you're keeping Tavares yeah yeah my list is guys you'd keep because I think everything else you can sell I think Tavares you just that's what you have to do I mean the contract he signed I think yeah very much indicates he ain't going anywhere I don't even think you ask him yeah like it probably should have gone without saying but Tavares is going to be around there's not a world
Starting point is 00:33:51 where he's moved and then with the defenseman it's McCabe and then I don't keep Tanev uh regardless like even even if he's a summer trade Tanev is the Tavares category of there's I don't think there's a world where you can move well you can't move him right now he's not playing he's not going to play till after the Olympics four years left yeah he's he's not being moved at all that's not of reality so amongst guys you can move um everybody's on the table besides probably mccabe and tana i also like through the next olympics according to his contract yeah i also like that yeah we'll see about that but i think he's bought a house here like his family's here he wanted to retire here so i actually like that i think you need guys like that you can't strip at
Starting point is 00:34:34 all right and i like a guy like tana too i think if if you're if you're hoping that ben danford becomes something yeah who better to mentor him than mccabe and tannif i don't have a problem with that like i look at tannif i'm like he's should be could be retired by the end of next season he's 36 he's such a wild this is a really hard injury yep um like i think there's a world where they're a playoff contending team next year 100 contending for the playoffs to be clear like just just yeah clear that up um did you know austin matthews is in tom brady too wow that's crazy man but like you that does not happen without you uh oh like trade benoit like it doesn't happen it just doesn't happen if you do nothing the best thing for this team
Starting point is 00:35:26 might be to get their ass kicked like there was a moment don't worry about that they are oh i know but there was a moment during last night's game and it's the first time i swear to god it's the first time this season where i think it was a two-on-one i don't remember who was on the two-on-one i don't remember who was back and a little part of my brain was like score please score it was the sabers on the two-on-one a little part of my brain there was a clip today of uh i think it was sam mckee asked justin bourne what was your overwhelming feeling after this game and borny nailed it he goes relief yeah i said that on the stream too it's it's black and white now oh we can let go there's no gray area anymore oh hey uh they're they're going to the west coast
Starting point is 00:36:18 yeah and they're gonna play seattle if they lose to seattle and i think san jose wins their next game that'll put the leafs in 25th what are we doing sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right
Starting point is 00:36:57 see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the task rabbit app you should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle this is an nhl network graphic from today uh it's
Starting point is 00:37:48 under yeah right there i want you to see this because this is crazy and and it speaks to the fact that listen goal scoring is the hardest thing to do in the league sure the hardest thing the Leafs can do that they not against them not to get well but they did score four goals yep right they still can score the other guys their goals their goals per game are actually it's in line with last year what they can't do is defend and this graphic is so damning Jesus wept they are 30 second and shots allowed they are 30 second and slot shots they are 30 second in rush chances allowed in cycle chances they're 31st and expected goals against their 29th and in actual goals they are 30th it is a miracle they are not in dead last place that's crazy it shows how much they score
Starting point is 00:38:36 honestly how are you even how have you been in the playoff conversation this long and now you're eight points out you win last night you're what four four like it was a big swing you keep losing to the teams you need to beat guys it's over like they could win all four of their remaining games heading into the olympic break and it might not matter it still might not pull them to within six points of a playoff spot by the way the panthers are the they're the first outside of the wild card of course they are they're still six points out they're and they lost in regulation last night like if the gap in wild card right now is opening now i don't know if it stays that way there's still 30 games if you're an atlantic team if you're a metro team you still have a chance
Starting point is 00:39:26 yeah but but for wild card positioning if you're an atlantic team and you're on the outside looking in right now your minimum points out is six and six in is in october and november is nothing now and again remember this isn't a real january no right now we're mid-february we're like valentine's day post in terms of games played this is the the road is being stretched out before you like it's the looney tunes and you are you are way way far behind panthers i don't think they care if they don't make the playoffs hey we've been to three straight cups whatever if they miss the playoffs they're going to be a stanley cup contender next year yes like everyone knows the deal with them everyone knows the deal there's no shock here yeah like we were talking about how
Starting point is 00:40:11 they didn't have Kachuk and then didn't have Barkov we forgot how Brad Marchand was keeping them afloat and how unreal he was and he missed a bunch of time like it they're they're not being in the playoffs is the most easily explainable situation in the NHL and I think you know looking at the way that this team is is structured um i i we've talked a little bit about player personnel um we need i need to switch it back to management for a second here yeah okay because remember when we were in san jose last year in march john tortorella had a press conference that got him fired yeah and he said a game against the leafs and a game against he didn't he said i don't want to do this anymore basically and philadelphia the flyers were like okay you don't have to
Starting point is 00:41:03 was that against the leaf was it was i didn't remember wow i am i'm almost positive oh wait no i don't know if it was i don't know if it was it might not have been i don't know i don't remember that so regardless we were in san jose we were in san jose it happened and what i saw from that berube clip is a guy so frustrated that i feel like that feels like lost the room territory and to be clear you don't need to lose the room to get fired um and it's hilarious because i had somebody in the in the chat last night go well how many coaches does matthews get before it's him and i said buddy still not as many as mcdavid mcdavid went through as many coaches as matthews had in his entire career so far in four years yeah they went they went through like
Starting point is 00:41:46 they went through three coaches in four freaking years in edmonton but you know what they did they kept trying until they found the solution because they bet on that talent now you can make you can make the argument well mcdavid's better he's got that dog in him whatever i'll listen all that defense behind mcdavid was worse absolutely i think i think this coaching staff's done i think the coaching staff is done i want to know what you guys think about the coaching staff and then we'll talk about the gm i mean if firing mark savard was the shot across the bow to wake everyone up they've all gone back to sleep um like i don't do you let them ride the season out i guess but you know they're lame duck like there's no way he can be the coach of the
Starting point is 00:42:30 leafs next season especially a guy who doesn't really like young players doesn't that just feel completely absurd it's it's completely absurd why why are you bringing him back it's not working it doesn't work doesn't mean he's a bad coach it just doesn't fit jesse what do you think yeah i i would let craig ruby coach out this season and then once game 82 happens i think that's probably the end of it and next year you bring in somebody you know you would have two years left on his deal i don't care about the money and by the way he'll get he'll get hired somewhere else we know that's irrelevant to me whatever mls he has to pay they'll sell a couple tickets and they'll cover his paycheck i again i this is this is a story and it's not sports but i'm bringing it up anyway
Starting point is 00:43:13 since we're bullying rogers ownership today in rogers versus rogers there was a man named joe natalie friggin joey christmas he was an exec at telus ed wanted him at rogers natalie had i believe two months left in his non-compete with telus all he had to do was wait adam you read it you let me know if i got it right he had two months left but rogers trying to whip it out and drop it on the table goes i'm gonna pay an exorbitant amount of money to get him before the two months is eight weeks so he does yeah i can't wait eight weeks because i've never wanted for anything in my entire life and that was he couldn't cope so he pays untold fortunes for this joey christmas comes in natale means christmas joe joe natale comes in and he's almost immediately undercut so i wanted
Starting point is 00:44:20 the idea of you not the ideas that you bring and within a few years ed is pushing him out the door and he pays millions tens of millions tens of millions well into eight digits to get rid of the guy who he paid a fortune to get in the first place i don't want to fucking hear about the coach you don't want to pay to not coach for your team or the executive that you don't want to pay for the rest of the season to no longer be an executive on your team. You had no problem with these decisions when they fed your ego, Edward. Make them now that they're literally the right and smart thing to do.
Starting point is 00:45:19 that's all um so you think berube's gone then why shouldn't he be did you see those fucking numbers terrible those were crazy those are like video game numbers if you were trying to be shit also like if you left the room to take a dump mid-game every video game that you played you would come up with those numbers and i know he's a great guy but derrick lalonde i was right about you hot diggity damn was there crazy regression there uh i also want to talk about brad for living because we do have a trade deadline coming up now there's you could argue there's a soft trade deadline well he's running out of time the roster freeze in about a week and a half before the olympics he's running out of time because teams are getting wise to that aren't
Starting point is 00:46:04 yeah is brad for living like if you're keith pelly this morning no i haven't seen brad for living tear down a team right he didn't tear the flames down he kept trying to build them up he didn't tear down the coyotes he actually kept trying to build them up him and Don Maloney in Phoenix too yeah and that was Phoenix Phoenix is Bradshaw living that guy one thing I will say is Brandon Pridham was here basically from the beginning he is still an AGM uh Brad Brandon Pridham knows the cap because he made the cap right a lot of people forget this but he was a part of the group that created the current cap in the way that it's been built he knows it inside out he was worked he worked under dubas dubas was phenomenal
Starting point is 00:46:51 at along with mark hunter and lou amarella tearing it down getting great assets building the farm back up all of those things you got to give that to them sure and and people will argue and i know you will too that it's the easiest thing to do you can fuck up a retool very oh for sure oh it's easy that doesn't mean it's you you can not screw it up and part of a retool is being on the same page with your coach and the ceo about what kind of brand the leafs are going to be in the future because when when shannon came in when when dubas came in when luke came in it was we are going to be highly skilled we will take chances on smaller guys uh this team has um gone for size over uh substance too many times in their draft picks in their signings in their trades we need to get
Starting point is 00:47:42 talent and if we need to get bigger later we'll trade some of that talent for big which they never ended up doing and i want to know what the leafs brand is going to be and so if you're going to retool and you're going to grab prospects from another system let's say you're going to trade bobby mcmahon to edmonton and you want x prospect back well what kind of prospect what what's the archetypal player that you're looking for. That is something that needs to be decided probably in the next couple of weeks. What's the ethos of the organization? I asked this on Twitter, I don't know, probably a couple of days ago. What is, if you were to ask them and put truth serum in management's mouth right now, what is the Maple Leafs brand? And the question I would
Starting point is 00:48:28 have for Brad for living, if I were in a scrum is, okay, what's your brand follow-up? How close do you think you are to achieving that brand how just do it are we to nike right and i don't i don't know what the brand is yeah and i don't know how close they think they are well i'll tell you what the brand of the league is it's speed and you're one of the slowest it's not gonna work here let me let me throw this at you like again i told that story in lfr i told the story i think last podcast the snow day podcast about bradshaw living in the wonderful text message he's a great person yeah uh this has nothing to do with that uh june 19th 2015 the leafs trade greg sorry greg mckegg to the florida panthers for a conditional seventh and a guy named uh what's
Starting point is 00:49:19 zach hyman um one of the greatest trades in leafs history yeah turns out june 27th would have been better if they kept them june 27th 2015 um the leafs got martin marincin and a prospect for a fourth this is the big one july 1st 2015 the leafs acquire casperi capon and scott harrington nick spalling a conditional first round pick that they ended up using to get freddie anderson and a third round pick in 2016 in exchange for phil kessel tim erickson tyler biggs and a conditional second-round pick in 2016. They made a few other trades, too, before another big one. Who was GM?
Starting point is 00:50:04 At that time, it was split between two GMs. Yes, there wasn't one! Mark Hunter, Kyle Dubas. Now, I got great, holy-shitting news for you. It's not two assistant GMs. It's five! did you know that the leafs have five assistant general managers i did yeah who are they name them no you name them staring down the barrel of the camera uh okay here let me do it shane don't
Starting point is 00:50:35 shane don'ts not one of them he's special assistant to the general manager he's smithers he's basically which is mean that's kevin adams you're yeah kevin adams is smithers reuse i'm stealing his brand no stealing his brand by the way based on last night's game and the way the sabers have gone i cannot decide if kevin adams is the most underrated executive in nhl history or the worst executive in nhl history like we're talking mike milbury levels of awful i cannot i cannot decide i saw the money ball meme and i was like look everyone this is the buffalo sabers they're a really talented young team they're gonna play really well the only problem is they fucking hate you kevin adams like i was like yeah that's pretty much they started
Starting point is 00:51:23 winning before he was even fired they just knew he was getting fired and they were like wow i think i'm showing up to work today so shane doan is not assistant gm he's assistant to the gm sort of like jason spezza is to kyle dubas uh brandon pridham is assistant gm yep hayley wickenheiser is an assistant gm yep and now it gets hard um derrick clancy i believe is assistant gm daryl metcalf is assistant gm and i'm missing one i know i'm missing one who am i missing there's five that's so many assistant gms pridham derrick clancy ah yeah hayley wickenheiser mad daryl metcalf ryan hardy ryan hardy is the one i always forget also spezza got a promotion when he came over to pittsburgh hot diggity damn he's an assistant general man way to go jason that's
Starting point is 00:52:19 incredible for you yeah well i think bren's book very well just like ryan hardy so they all have different roles but there's five of them and brandon pridham has been in that role so long like i freaking let him do it i don't know man i said last episode i would love to see brandon pridham in the gm role at least like to for the end of the season like he can be interim you know i think he's deserved that job and i think he'd do a great job with it yeah he's the only one whose role is assistant gm and that's it right so derrick lancey is assistant gm uh comma player personnel i don't even know what that would entail hailey wickenheiser dr hailey wickenheiser is assistant gm player development i mean that's pretty self-explanatory
Starting point is 00:53:04 daryl metcalf hockey research and development so i think analytics and yeah analytics um which is definitely dumbing it down too much but whatever and ryan hardy is minor league operations in the gm of the toronto marlies it's so if anyone is going to if if brad for living were to be let go today the guy uh handling the i imagine the draft and more importantly in terms of immediate need the trade deadline would be brandon prim i mean unless he's gone too i don't know i don't i've i've had problems with the roster construction of this least team i said it a lot in the fall when they were losing a bunch through october and november and then everything kind of settled through the what three weeks where they had a good stretch of our bump yeah and then now it's back
Starting point is 00:54:00 and i think the evidence supports that bradshaw living didn't build a great team here he tried to piecemeal it together to keep everything as a float and then get back in the playoffs but it wasn't it wasn't a good team and last night we're looking at some of the nhl edge numbers david altar pointed this out to me um the zone time for this team 32nd in offensive zone time all straight Wow. Which is a disaster. And then you go to the defensive zone time, 30th. So still a disaster.
Starting point is 00:54:30 And they spend the 14th most time in the neutral zone. That's because they can't get to the offensive zone. It's because they're not in the other zones. It almost makes me feel bad having a go at Joseph Wall last night. Because he was bad. He's been bad. And he's been bad. Dennis Hildeby has been their best goalie this year.
Starting point is 00:54:48 Why isn't he playing? The only... I would say it's been Wall. He's just been bad recently. it's he's stolen a bunch of games i'm a beast guy yeah i like i like the hilda beast too i do so we it's really they're losing games solely because he's not stealing them exactly exactly like i don't think the roster is there to play with the other teams in this league the shot attempt differential they're 31st there you can see it on the screen minus 4.7 and they're shot
Starting point is 00:55:17 on goal differential they're 30th as well and i adam i think you asked a really good question about what's the brand of the team and i think that lends to this stuff because bradshaw living went out when he's getting all these defensemen in the back end his thing was big i'm gonna go get big guys and big and big and big and big and big and that was kind of it and you look at who was the most successful defenseman for the least this year their waiver claim in troy stetcher who is an undersized guy who can move the puck yeah i mean oel oel's had a great year who can move the puck yeah yeah like that's what he does that's where the league's going never look at oel and be like man that's a big guy at the back end who just does big stuff no oel's a puck mover and
Starting point is 00:55:58 he's good at that tan is also very good into going the corners and getting the puck out but they don't have him he's 36 there's an injury yeah he's 36 and then troy stetcher who's come in has been a revelation for this team because they don't have that because bradley living didn't give this roster that you should trade troy stetcher back to the oilers is what you should do honestly i mean him and bobby mcmahon i've heard worse ideas is exactly what the oilers need and then the forward group i think like you're there's so many holes in guys you're relying on to step up and be a certain type of player and they've just shown time and time again they can't be that i look at look specifically at a guy like max domi who how many tries are we going to give
Starting point is 00:56:36 max domi to be who we think he might be next to austin matthews it's time to move on listen at least max gets austin the puck but the defensive giveaways jesse are so painful the one last night and he's so much better on the wing but i don't again you're like is max is he on this team when they win max at his best is on the second or third line of a very good team you look at what he did in dallas in the playoffs before he signed in toronto he was phenomenal he should have value he does his over his career he's consistently a great playoff performer this is not a this is not a guy that that is oh it shouldn't be in the league whatever no no no uh he's the only guy on the team that can actively get austin matthews the puck which is why he's playing with him
Starting point is 00:57:21 but max cannot be in high leverage situations and it's like you know uh uh anthony petrelli who is by the way so great to read on this he's not underrated person in like leaf fandom he's not uh he's not keyed into one of the major networks but man this guy he really knows his stuff and he's like listen it's like the hot dog meme uh you got Domi and Riley out in high leverage situations we're all looking for the guy who did this together it's it's management Jesse putting together a team where it's like I what's Berube gonna do right so like I think Max Domi is a hole there and then I know Bradshaw Living didn't bring in all these players but he chose to enter the season with all these players and not move something in the roster relying on Bobby
Starting point is 00:58:05 McMahon to be a top six player I would never say that that's a contender for a Stanley Cup that's what we want out of this guy Nick Robertson is come and go you know it's been a couple games I've noticed him I could take or leave him yep Craig Rube hates Callie Yarncroke that's never gonna happen it's not a thing anymore he also doesn't like he doesn't hate him enough to take him out of the lineup Quillen looks good every time he's in and they're like no and I six minutes last I gotta tell you look at what so the Leafs didn't think Minton was ready for this season which is why they traded him last year and he's been amazing in Boston the other guy that Berube did not like and you don't have to tell me you don't have to argue with me on this uh the proof
Starting point is 00:58:47 is in the amount of times he played him Alex Steeves Alex Steeves has gone to Boston he's been very good I'll give you another one I'll give you another one you had control over Pontus Holmberg and you didn't qualify he was a restricted free agent you didn't qualify him now he's on tampa he was very limited yes you he you know it's funny john is getting the best out of him yes and tampa does that with guys because they've got a good system yeah but i look at i look at holmberg and i'm like is it because holmberg you knew when he was out there there was no goals going in um but it's also he was playing with david conf a lot where you absolutely knew there were no goals going in right and so like i said i was not a i'm not a big pontus holmberg guy i'm
Starting point is 00:59:30 not worried about pontus holmberg you didn't have to lose him you didn't have to lose him and early this season you could have qualified him and flipped yarn croak to somebody what yes and when when at the beginning of the season which sort of set them down this path of mediocrity uh man i'd kill for mediocrity right now they're not even that like uh what started them down this path was them completely wrecking the roster because scott lawton who was their fourth line center got hurt and camp they would have been called up if he didn't
Starting point is 01:00:02 throw a fit. Yeah, let's just call it what it is. I'm tired of pretending with David Conf. He fucked his career up. He fucked his career up. Yeah, quit on the Leafs because he was mad about being sent down to the AHL. They had a center injury early where he got a raise by the way. Oh, yeah, because
Starting point is 01:00:18 he didn't have to pay escrow. Nobody's paying escrow anymore. No, no, they're all getting actually paid back. Oh, that's right. Yeah, they're nobody's paying escrow Sorry, I keep forgetting you do a show with Alan. But the point is that David Conf basically burned his contract to get a chance to play, and he would have had it in Toronto. He set hundreds of thousands of dollars on there. Millions. Millions.
Starting point is 01:00:39 Yep, and now he's in Vancouver where he's still at three points. Awful numbers. Still at three points? That's great, man. They could have used him. Okay, Pontus. It's Pontus' job. Nope.
Starting point is 01:00:54 we don't have him because we lost control of him for no good reason all you had to do was qualify him all you had to do was qualify him well we wanted to go out don't go out well we had to get don't you can't afford it and now he's on tampa are you upset that frazier mitten has 13 points in 14 games yes objectively yes would you undo the carlo trade fuck yes are you joking yes yeah me too absolutely it's funny a Bruins fan tweeted me last night they're like can we have Carlo back because I guess they're thinking about things differently because they're actually like it looks like they're going to qualify for the playoffs and I was like yes and I can think of the exact package I would ask for yeah well you're not getting that back now I think oh I know
Starting point is 01:01:40 Bradshaw Living saw a big defenseman and he went out and he got him yeah that would be you know we didn't mention him like you could trade him oh and he'll have value he's six foot seven right shot defenseman who actually is good in a good defensive system and salary retained and salary retained and you could retain again if you wanted to i don't know but my here's the thing with the carlo trade this is where brad true living really screwed up for me there was a couple of moments last year where to me brad has now lost his job i really don't mind the lot in trade it's it's the carlo one that kills me uh uh the the the here's where brad true living loses his job if miko ranton was available and you couldn't get the three-way done with vegas for marner because
Starting point is 01:02:19 marner wouldn't wave then you trade nice you you give them nice and you take miko ranton and let me ask you guys would you rather have miko ranton or matthew nize and a phantom first round pick i could tell you my answer 10 times out of 10 yeah like especially with the way miko played in the first round last but isn't that brad for living's tenure with the leafs in a nutshell the the story to me isn't what he did it's what he didn't and then let me ask you this okay so the leafs complete the brandon carlo trade before the panthers get brad for living brad living brad marchand for a conditional third you're telling me that you traded frazier minton and a first yeah and even if they'd asked you for an extra third round pick or a second round pick or whatever you didn't get
Starting point is 01:03:03 brad marchand i believe marchand that he would have come to i 100 agree that with that too that's all we heard jesse yeah because it was between florida we heard it at the time not from brad and not from him trying to troll lease fans i'm saying it now is complete troll and needling us but it was happening at the time and if the the price was a third which turns out to be a second because they win the stanley cup and and the least probably wouldn't have you can pay that price you could have had marsh in and ranting and probably beat florida and you're probably looking at me like what probably you're looking to be adam adam adam hold on they wouldn't have had the salary i don't know put somebody on ltir like florida and vegas always did yeah who cares they had no
Starting point is 01:03:48 cap in the playoffs literally just cheat just cheat just cheat do what tampa did when all the canadians fans got mad and kucherov didn't play till game one just cheat simply cheat yeah talk to your players months ahead of time oh sounds like you could use some surgery you know just just give him a little bit of that nuts it's nuts a little bit of that it's crazy uh and so listen that is where to me brad loses his job i have i've heard i mean there's whispers coming from everywhere they're selling someone's getting fired i've not heard any of that oh they actually that's true oh they actually well here's the worst one that i heard was uh they're actually bullish they can still make the playoffs and they're gonna buy all right and make the playoffs
Starting point is 01:04:36 to what end let's say they do make the playoffs it's like i'm taking a lot of shit from penguins fans and rightfully so this year okay let me let me give you this on the right we're taking shit from everyone no no i'm taking shit and penguins fans deserve to give me shit but and and josh He wrote a very pointed tweet about Toronto media and Kyle Dubas and all that stuff. And let's call it what it is. Rage bait. We were part of that target and that's fine.
Starting point is 01:05:04 You're not getting a ring if they win, but okay. So Pittsburgh makes the playoffs. Yeah. Ah, you got Sidney Crosby. Sure. What?
Starting point is 01:05:14 But my point is how, how far are they going to go? And if Pittsburgh is that much better than Toronto, which they are. Yes. If Toronto makes the playoffs, how far are they gonna steve you know they're gonna make like the third round and adam's gonna have to panthers yeah panthers it's steam how many times do i have to teach you this lesson old man
Starting point is 01:05:34 what are you doing i'm daring the penguins to prove me wrong this is the difference between adam and i this is the difference between adam and i because he's like the penguins still are mid and i'm like they're in a mid-ass division dude and i'm like congratulations to the detroit red wings yeah yo detroit's great that's who i called the blue sabers and also the red wings and the sabers are better than the leaves i think i actually have a lot of faith in what the red wings can do oh yeah yeah me too i kind of like i would take the if it was red wings versus boston i'm taking detroit i'm brandon i saw an insane stat that brandon bussey with the hurricanes has a better win percentage than the colorado oh my god here's the thing my my point in it
Starting point is 01:06:23 in bringing up the pittsburgh thing is okay so you're going to sneak in right let's look at the standings right now the playoffs start today penguins are second in their division they're going to play the islanders that'd be an interesting series that'd be a very interesting series now if they get through i think they could if carolina gets through as well i think the penguins could go all the way to the conference final i think pittsburgh beats carolina just because of Sidney Crosby and Gino's been great there's there's definitely incentive to get into the playoffs in the east this year but anyone anyone could do it Detroit Buffalo is an interesting one because that's like that'd be a fun series but like okay so Tampa right now would play the
Starting point is 01:06:58 Bruins which would be a hilarious series I think Tampa ultimately wins that Carolina would play Montreal Montreal's been really good if they could figure out their friggin goaltending they just fired their goaltending coach today that's a fascinating series i kind of like the canadians in that series also look how things have leveled out in uh in the east all the playoff teams have a positive goal differential which was not a thing for a while and almost every team out has a negative one how do you feel about traveling because golf season starts early this year in toronto well what courses should be hit come april 15th do you think i don't know adam which ones do you think all i know is you don't have to pay roaming charges you should go to sailey.com
Starting point is 01:07:49 and use the promo code dangle why because uh not only does it help encrypt all your information so if you're using like uh you know sketchy wi-fi abroad blah blah blah uh you're protected but also saley gives you 15 off saley e-sims right now with that promo code dangle so you can save big on travel plans with an exclusive deal from us the steve dangle podcast surf the web rob worry-free without any it's in the reed my mouth is dry one more one more time surf the web abroad oh my god worry-free abroad i said abroad search the web five times fast search the web abroad search the web abroad search the web abroad
Starting point is 01:08:31 search the web abroad the web you didn't say the you're saying uh what is the line search surf the web abroad oh surf
Starting point is 01:08:39 I didn't even know that's what you were saying worry free without any roaming fees 15% off saley.com slash dangle just use the promo code
Starting point is 01:08:48 dangle to check out or download yeah search the web abroad can I ask you a Leafs question just to get a little back on track yeah yeah um
Starting point is 01:08:55 what do you do about that first round pick that Boston Owens you're fucked uh Do you go out and try and get it back? Do you get somebody else's first round pick? I think you do both.
Starting point is 01:09:07 It's top five protected. Sell like mad. Sell, sell, sell. And hey, Austin, do you have an injury? That's crazy. See you next year. They might not even have to do that. If San Jose wins their next game and the Leafs lose to Seattle, they're 25th.
Starting point is 01:09:23 But then you're beholden to the lottery balls, right? Right. But I think you also, that's why you sell and hedge your bets. but i think like i remember when when peter horacek took over from randy carlyle the least were in eighth place they they could have made the playoffs that year and they fired randy carlyle fell off a cliff and like i think it was jvr and cadre like did not play they just ltr was shut down loophole was shut down loophole shut down forever it turns out forever um i don't remember who was in net i think i think that the toronto maple leafs you know you you had your bets hey
Starting point is 01:09:56 we're going to finish bottom five in the league we're going to try to get that top five pick it's a deeper draft this year which is exciting sure uh and if we don't well we're going to have a couple of first rounders in the 20s can we get edmonton's i don't know if edmonton has a first round pick i haven't even looked can we get uh they don't can we get boston's first so i did okay i did look at this edmonton has i'd like to focus on edmonton a bit because there's noise there there's people are clearly trying to feel out the situation there they don't have a first and yeah jesse bring it up to make sure i thought you do it off yeah they don't have a first they do have their own second here we go next year they do have a first they have their own second the
Starting point is 01:10:40 year after they have a first and a second the year after they have a first but no second so who's on the board Bobby McMahon I like the idea of Oliver Ekman Larson man are we out with the Oilers would be sick that'd be crazy and I mean they know he's a good playoff performer he friggin beat them the first time and uh Troy Stetcher I think it's just a very funny idea there if it's mcmahon by himself you're giving me at least two seconds like i look at the keifer sherwood package yeah sherwood has more hits i think fewer shots same amount of goals mcmahon is faster um can play with a guy like mcdavid who's lightning fast yeah like that's the thing with mcdavid you got to play fast guys with him and i think the if if you're so i listed a number
Starting point is 01:11:38 of guys right like mcmahon is so cheap stetcher is so cheap you should have kept him uh and then there's oel who's actually on a sweetheart deal and you've been trying to get rid of manjapane do not take manjapane back why not take him and flip him i hope so to get assets and manjapane to make it work and then flip him for who gives a shit can you flip him or just have him play out the season like who cares he assigned to he'd be on the team next year he assigned to a two-year deal okay then definitely flip him you need warm bodies but yeah i don't think so i don't like that he's got a partial no trade next year interesting full no move right now no trade i should say not no move and then next year is a five team trade list yeah well i would look at it it's an idea
Starting point is 01:12:23 um is it the greatest idea i don't know but it's definitely an idea um that's that's what i would do that's what i would to end a little limply there but you can make you can make the money work they do have the assets uh like uh if you include oel and stetcher in there or one or the other like does savoy find his way into the deal does a guy okay well i'd rather get those fans are like whoa whoa okay klattenberg i'd rather get a player that's almost nhl ready that's what i'm thinking so klattenberg you need about getting people and bodies as opposed to getting picks right i would also ask edmonton okay so if not savoy what would it take to get savoy yeah this is the problem with the oilers is they've kind of floored it as well but they do have picks they
Starting point is 01:13:13 have like a surprising amount of picks um could you get uh friggin what's his name ike something ike howard could you get ike howard but you're not by coward i don't know about i coward i think there's a reason tampa let him go is there well that is a red flag yeah 23 points in 16 games with bakersfield though yeah isaac howard right yeah but he wants to go by like is that a thing yeah yeah um is there a world where you are comfortable with the leafs paying a i would say substantial amount for Adam Fox yes I would flip Nylander for Fox that's an offseason deal though is it I would think so doesn't have to be no I suppose not okay the Rangers are like of all the teams in the east they're dead yeah they need a new superstar like the Leafs Jesse makes a good
Starting point is 01:14:10 point don't have a good chance of catching a playoff spot they also don't have a good catch of catching the rangers like that's how bad they are okay so off season jt miller and william nylander in the same dressing room would be interesting oh guys i'm not another swede to believe you're dropping a grenade in msd and you're walking away right like that's what you're doing by leaving willie there you're saying good luck and then you're taking adam fox have a great time is that the cost is it nylander would you do nice is there a possibility of that yeah for who fox yeah and a fox package it would have to be more though right the rangers situation is uh it those players just don't become available right so yeah absolutely like there's not a ton of players
Starting point is 01:14:57 um i would trade william neilander and uh matthew nyes for would fox wave you think about fox i would think there i don't know there's a little bit there with fox and his own gm not then his own coaching staff i should say not gm his own head coach not liking him for team usa oh it's yeah it's it's they've when there's smoke there's fire i think that might be a gettable player if you're looking for a transformative defenseman who can really be what the leafs have never had adam fox might be the guy because like you said they're they don't come around very often and he is a guy that might be available let's let's get crazy let's pick another american defenseman jesse who's almost up on his contract who has played with austin matthews in the
Starting point is 01:15:41 national program many many times and might want to play with him again zach rowenski in columbus that's a guy could you and listen columbus fans rangers fans you're all probably gonna hate this but could you flip matthew nye's for zach rowenski and then try to convince him to stay in some sort of deal that gives you the marquee guy that's on the back end and you'd still have nylander at that point zacharency's contract is also ridiculous too he makes 9.5 million dollars for the next two seasons after this one and she is in reality a 14 million dollar defenseman he's kale maker money oh yeah well and the problem with the blue jackets is like they've had him this whole time yeah and still been bad yeah um you obviously i don't know you need to you should
Starting point is 01:16:29 probably pivot there or do you try to build like i i don't know i think the blue jackets were caught off guard by how the season went um so they're difficult to read no they probably and they've got prover off there they committed to him whether or not you think that's a good contract they look at the anchors next to them they've got they got i like what we're doing here um just because uh uh picks are magic beans and also even if you hit like there's no guarantee they help you right away this is what i'm asking for you need i'm not i'm not looking after a second round pick i want transformative player where i have to give up some of my high-end talent to get somebody who's really going to shake up the roster and be good for this team
Starting point is 01:17:14 next season why can't you ask for a similar package for nick waugh that the flyers asked for for scott lawton it's probably something there it's probably a little less but it's something there probably a little if there's no retention it's definitely less yeah because remember lawton's was 1.5 after the double return guess what nick waugh is if you retain 1.5 1.5 right right-handed center uh those i mean right-handed hockey players apparently don't grow on trees especially if you're the freaking leaves yeah no righties on the power play god it looks ugly it's so bad it's not all doom and gloom it's not all you know they're boned uh i think it could be a very short-term thing i mean i do you could use the rangers not recently but remember when
Starting point is 01:18:06 the rangers i think was 2019 put that letter out and they're like hey guys the first letter yeah the first letter and they're like we're retooling it worked and it was great and you know who ran that that guy that's running the Montreal Canadiens yep and then they're like you know what enough of your shit get out of here go make another team in the division really good we're gonna fuck ourselves up get out of here because you told tails out of school and we're just so objectively right in doing it but like they they made some good good bets uh they had some picks that frankly just didn't work out like Lafreniere has not worked out you so disappointed but yeah uh they had i mean they did find themselves in the eastern conference final twice hey i would kill
Starting point is 01:18:47 for that uh you know you can you you retool a little bit and a big free agent like panarin becomes available and boom all of a sudden here you are you're back crider was there zabina jad was there um fox was there all those guys were there throughout the entire thing and they retooled and they did it quickly you can do it yeah this is not an impossible task i don't trust for living to do the task yeah i'd rather have a different voice and at the top and i think jesse that starts again with what are the toronto maple leafs going to be more guy i'll set that more than likely the person taxed with this retool fire sale whatever you want to call it you would i mean brandon pridham makes the most sense oh yeah like who's just available to oh yeah no i'll
Starting point is 01:19:30 drop what i'm doing to bring back dubas it's you know what yo he did a good job at that he did like i don't know there's an implication that leaf fans think dubas was completely irredeemable in every way which is just you're not paying attention or you don't want to but he was he did legitimately very good at the teardown with the leafs he got them a ton of assets ton of picks not a lot of them hit but he did a good job with one that aspect one thing i am worried about like i think brandon pridham is a good choice and for the gm and i think there's a name there the head coach position i'm not sure what the name is and that's that's an easy place to make mistakes it is but i think you also have lots of time um like dude if if you if you let
Starting point is 01:20:22 barube coach out the season whatever if you fire him and let lalon do the rest of the like who gives a damn you're losing games on purpose yeah like at the end of the season a bunch of guys are going to get fired that's the way of the world deborah is still available um you'll have a variety of guys to choose from i i kind of wonder too uh i think pete deborah would melt in this market i really do yeah um i think the way he melted in the western conference final in dallas I'd like a list of guys who frigging wouldn't. Yeah, but you look at what Kyle Dubas did. I'm going to compliment him now with Dan Mews.
Starting point is 01:20:57 He got a guy like Mike Sullivan. I've got both eyes on Mike Sullivan's coaching. No, Mike Sullivan is the best coach in the world, and Team USA should always employ him for every Olympic. Yeah, that's right. I love Mike Sullivan. Can you... Here, shut up.
Starting point is 01:21:12 Sorry, can we just have a meeting? Yeah, sure. Can you not with this shit? Okay, so until... No, no, no. Get the fuck over here. Sorry, what? can this he's not good this not he's not he's not had results in five years adam this is a
Starting point is 01:21:25 march conversation okay can you hear you got your computer in front of you what month is it it's uh it's january january january 28 january okay okay do you mind if you can pencil it into your schedule march not fuck this up okay all right okay okay thank you all right okay great yeah anyway back to that you know what mike sullivan sorry i was too hard on him but Dubas hiring Dan Muse open up the Penguins and look at that they look good and very little personnel change in Pittsburgh too
Starting point is 01:21:51 in fact they traded their starting goaltender for someone else's starting goaltender and the starting goaltender that's coming looks pretty damn good so I'm looking at that are you guys ready to be green with envy? Yeah like the Grinch. Cash App just released

Starting point is 01:23:31 here for a second because i do think we need you need to address nhl player safety um you know we talked a little bit on uh on on uh uh monday about like towards the end of the show about the william nylander thing i'm gonna be on record and just say i think this is such a stupid effing story but we absolutely need to talk about it because nobody will disagree that william nylander deserved a fine but which you also cannot deny you'll find some no no listen i i get that you think he's fucking cool or whatever and i get i get that but in a professional environment i nobody nobody will disagree that there's a fine there andrew ferentz was fined ryan hartman was fined hold on the middle finger is a fine what you cannot deny
Starting point is 01:24:21 is that willie was fined more than sergachev who did this last spring and got nothing and ferentz who years ago got the 2500 bucks and i don't know what hartman was fined uh less at a certain point and the Leafs have never done this and I've advocated for this before you need to advocate for yourself as an organization they've really especially with Larry Tannenbaum at the helm which he is not anymore really took a hands-off approach with head office let me ask you this do you think Jeremy Jacobs if if if William Nylander was a Bruin he did that at a Bruin game first off if you're a Bruin you're not doing that no well Ference yeah but how long ago was he was teammates with colin campbell's son so yeah it's okay do you think jeremy jacobs is not in gary
Starting point is 01:25:06 betman's bathroom the next morning do you think the lou lamorello leafs i'm telling you first of all there's no tank top in the friggin press box yeah oh yeah the leafs are the highest revenue generating team in the league year after year at a certain point you need to tony staffieri throw your weight around and i know and i have known for years and we've said it for years and everybody's talked about how it's cope and whatever blah blah blah how nhl uh player safety does not apply their own rules fairly consistently or honestly we know that okay i i don't need listen if you're a florida panthers fan you love this i know and you know what if i were you i'd of it too but i'm going to bring up something else that happened yesterday so kneelander happens a
Starting point is 01:25:57 couple days ago brian rust was suspended three games for a nasty hit to the head of brock fester uh it was it was like to the back no it was to the face he caught him he missed his hit and he caught his jaw i will say like i hate that hit and i hate the context of the hit which is it happened with the net empty with less than five seconds to go i don't care really oh you know what what kind of player brian rust is like there was a lot of that i hate that hit nobody will deny steve yes and i'm gonna say this again for the people who only communicate on reddit yeah nobody will deny that brian rush should have been suspended in fact i'll go as far as to say i think three games is perfect most penguins fans have been like yeah i thought he was going to get
Starting point is 01:26:46 suspended but holy shit but the problem is that if brian rust is wearing a different jersey a non-kyle dubas team no he is not getting suspended three games no shot i think those plays when you see this play up close i guarantee you have a second look where jesse's i think jesse's bringing it up he deserves three games for this it's a bad hit the bright no no oh you're not bringing up the ryan rust one no okay um so but adam you're falling into the leaf trap i'm okay with the suspension pauses to turn to the camera if that's the standard going forward never is never will be i think the timing's interesting mm-hmm because they were getting the department of player safety who for some reason is in charge
Starting point is 01:27:40 of finding middle fingers they should be they should be the department of players yeah they should be i honestly i think the team should have probably find them yes but what how often does that happen did the bruins find ference no did the wild fine hartman and i understand why the the league takes it out of the team's hands because because of course they're not going to want to find their own guy did the utah mammoth find sergachev no so there is an idea because people like well nylander and this is true like looked into the camera tapped his buddy said hey look at this and then flipped off the camera nylander knew what he was doing and everyone saw it because it was mid-game and a cameraman died and a cameraman died yes like died he died
Starting point is 01:28:27 i'm kidding he saw that and he was like yeah yeah anyway um the utah mammoth like you can make the argument that Sergeyev after the game flipping off the camera the league didn't see it the mammoth did they did okay they knew no no no wait like the point there is well why didn't the Leafs find him well for the same reason no other team ever finds their own guys I think and we'll show you the rust play in a second I think it doesn't so so the what what the NHL player safety would probably argue and this is what's floating around is well you know the league that didn't happen directly on you know shooting down the barrel of a tv camera in the middle of a loss and and you know on a national broadcast blah blah blah okay it was stupid the problem with the nhl player
Starting point is 01:29:17 safety argument when they if they were to make that argument is when you are suspending or finding somebody you are not suspending or finding them based on how many people saw it basing it on when it ran during the game anti-sporting you are on are you are you at work yeah are you at work are you on nhl slash franchise property yes well this is what the standard is for flipping off a fan or a camera it's and sergachev it doesn't matter that it didn't make the broadcast or maybe it did it doesn't matter that it wasn't you know that it wasn't as obvious it doesn't matter the action is the action is the action you find and suspend the action not the outcome of the action not the injuries not the national attention you find and suspend the action and that is where the issue
Starting point is 01:30:07 becomes a problem and you look at brian russ watch this brian russ play okay so there's rust and they're at bottom or sorry uh side right here rust is trying to hit besser he's loaded up to hit him and he's misses him catches his jaw to me i have no issue with that being three games that's exactly what i want oh you know what so when i said he hit him in the back i was talking about raquel no it's the rust hit wham right across the jaw that's three games to me yeah no it's terrible but but but here's the problem how many examples jesse can you pull of brad marchand doing the exact same goddamn thing this exact hit never being suspended at all yes like this is not even the worst hit of the season probably not no no but it's the first multi-game suspension of the
Starting point is 01:30:58 season and it's three games so this is the nhl throwing the book planting their flag this is the worst thing that's happened in our league this year and a guy who has zero suspense that's a joke no history i think with the sergachev middle finger that happened last april and the statement that colin campbell gave in the willie's uh fine it was an admission you mean george peros sorry george peros sorry couldn't help but notice the little freudian slip you had there just same thing george peros gave in the willie suspension where he talked about this happened at at an nhl rink on on television everything nothing he said about the willie suspension wasn't also true about suspension fine wasn't also true about the surrogate of incident everything they don't watch
Starting point is 01:31:51 their game you could have copied and pasted that under mikhail sergachev has been fined five thousand dollars this is what george perot says but they didn't see the sergachev thing they don't they didn't know what happened and finding willie is an admission that when something happens in toronto and it's a big deal and the people here write about it and everybody's talking about on twitter they see it and they react to it but if something goes unnoticed in another market they leave it because they didn't know what happened because it's it needs to not again it right jesse it goes back to what i said the action matters it's not how many people saw it and let me say this but to them it is entirely about like oh nobody kind of noticed the circuit
Starting point is 01:32:33 thing we missed it too and there was no fine you know what's crazy about that that's fucking stupid yes and you know that's a ridiculous way to run an organ uh run a leak and let me talk to player safety for a second there is more than just george peros that works for you i know at least there's at least seven to nine people that work there probably more you have no excuse you're wrong you're wrong i don't have a problem with you finding willie i think you'll be okay i have an issue with your lack of attention to detail and that's so embarrassing because that's quite literally your job i do my job i commentate on hockey everyone does their damn job to do it we're doing our job what about you and the problem is no one holds them accountable
Starting point is 01:33:16 because they're friends and i let's just call it what it is you got favorites you know steve you always say it perfectly the panthers are the nhl's team i mean at some you're gonna have to prove to me that they're not like it's so ridiculous here can i can i read the statement that like jesse so eloquently pointed out i can read the george peros one i got the whole thing from the release from the nhl okay now here thought exercise pretend you don't know if he's talking about nylander or sergachev oh let me insert sergachev's name here okay sergachev directed an inappropriate gesture at a television camera operator while the camera was directed at sergachev and his teammates as they left the arena ding the gesture was shown live on air during game broadcast that one we're
Starting point is 01:34:04 not sure well this how did this person has the footage because it was on television that's my assumption you know and now wait though so one person i spoke to was like well sometimes uh the backhaul feed will find its way onto streams you're on air you're on air broadcasting 101 you're on air the first sentence steven if the public can see you you're on air the first sentence we don't we don't need to we don't need to debate this yeah he directed an inappropriate gesture at a television camera operator there's nothing to debate there while the camera was that is what nylander did and what sergachev did yeah i'll continue nhl uh senior vice president of player safety george parasol this serves as a reminder the code of conduct governing players
Starting point is 01:34:51 doesn't apply to other teams throughout the arena at nhl games and in public game situations that sentence there can be applied to the same thing that sergachev did it's the they offered a fine for this because they noticed it it was a big deal and they didn't notice the other one that happened because it happened with utah which by the way that's not my fault no that's the question the question that the department of player safety needs to ask themselves that they won't is why okay you're not watching the post game of the utah mammoth game which i suppose i understand you're the department of player safety you don't assume things are going to happened in the post-game scrum or whatever why did hundreds upon hundreds of utah mammoth fans
Starting point is 01:35:36 know about this and you didn't like you're not plugged in at all you're not plugged in at all mix in a little bit of the budget to having a vague idea of what's going on get into the nooks and crannies of the internet or is that just not the thing you do you're on your phone during the game anyway i know you are so many people tell me like oh my god i see these guys at the games they're not even watching right get into the nooks and crannies of the internet that you need to be in to do your job and the reason i brought up the timing pittsburgh penguin fans uh pittsburgh penguins execs need to be on the phone going why'd you give brian three games just because you were mad about the willie thing that's what i think happened is that what you think happened yeah
Starting point is 01:36:21 the the time i don't see the connection there the timing lines up they were getting shit for the Nylander and Sergachev stuff. They were mad about it, and so they came down on the Penguins because fuck Kyle, he's not part of the club anyway. I had not thought about that. Okay, now for anybody listening,
Starting point is 01:36:37 they wouldn't know that I changed the last part of the first sentence where it says, and his teammates in the press box for Sergachev walking off. Because Sergachev was not in the press box. He wasn't in the press box, so I didn't add that part.
Starting point is 01:36:46 Jesse. Yeah. What was the mood? Were you at pregame yesterday? Pregame, no. Okay. Word on the street is that tense it was tense i think the leafs are legitimately upset about this william
Starting point is 01:37:01 neilander fine can i just talk to the maple leafs for a second here and then i want to talk to willie oh boy hey maple leafs can you maybe start to have some internal standards please like blue and white disease like like let's talk about this like if willie flips off a camera and into the middle of a win streak i mean it's probably still something you shouldn't do but you're in the middle of the worst homestand in quite literally 41 years 41 years and your second highest played paid player just flipped off a camera and again is it that big of a deal no did anybody die only the cameraman he's gonna be 30 in may this is the thing it's not hey buddy you're not a like and and i want to say this to willie too
Starting point is 01:37:50 I'm going to get to him. But for the Toronto Maple Leafs, you've not held people accountable. Nobody gets traded when you lose. Nothing happens. How about some internal standards? How about a mirror? Okay, how about a mirror?
Starting point is 01:38:03 Now for William Nylander, you're not a cool teenager anymore. I think you're cool. I love the way you play hockey. He's objectively cool. I think you're built for a market like this because you just, you got the devil may care thing going on.
Starting point is 01:38:14 And I think everybody loves a guy who comes across like he doesn't care. They're always the coolest guys. buddy standards standards and i know we all slip and he made his apology and whatever standards you're in the middle of a losing streak you don't want to be on camera then all you have to do look at this i got a i got a chair with wheels move out of the way of the camera flip them off through the wall nobody sees you you're frustrated He calls it a moment of frustration or whatever.
Starting point is 01:38:47 This is a standards issue. And I do think the Toronto Maple Leafs need to have some. And I think it plays into the lack of effort that Berube and Scott Lawton talked about against Colorado. That is all connected. And you can't convince me otherwise. Do I love William Nylander as a player? Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:39:12 Never met the guy. Apparently he's a really nice guy. i think he's awesome but this is a standards issue if somebody at our office flipped off the camera unless it was a joke like steve did we'd have to have a conversation i'm not doing it on tv well it's kind of close to it but it's all yeah oh there's a disclaimer it's also a joke this this is the toronto maple leafs we got we got a bit of an insight here on the standards and i think they're outwardly mad when they also should be inwardly mad it's never their fault it's always there you go and i and i listen i don't think that that
Starting point is 01:39:55 it's nobody's dying here we're all going to be okay it's just a middle middle finger we all get one on the 401 basically every day yeah i'm just saying hey have some internal pride and standards i don't care what william nylander's wearing i don't care i don't really give a i think it's about hey you're in the middle of a losing streak you're getting embarrassed at home again after being embarrassed at home two nights ago read the room dude i don't really care what he's wearing but like the one who cares that he's wearing a tank top i was like a tank top who cares what the adam i would style who cares if you wore a tank top in here i'd be like what the fuck man well i also wouldn't look good in one i got hairy shoulders and acne on my arms i just don't
Starting point is 01:40:41 think it would look good it would give me something to do during the show just pick up my hair well i was thinking more of the pimples jesse do you do you disagree with my opinion on that internal standards like hey 11 and a half million dollar guy maybe don't do that yeah he probably shouldn't be cheeky in that moment it's not like that big of a deal but don't do it at the tv cameras you know okay it's just a little hey man yeah you're being an idiot in this moment for sure it's I didn't have a problem with the way this was handled until I saw the Sergachev thing. Because people are like, oh, this is so silly.
Starting point is 01:41:20 The problem I always have with the Department of Players' Safety is precedent. Well, precedent is you get fined for this. Yeah. That's the problem I have. I didn't have a problem with it until I found out someone did it and didn't get fined for it. As usual, I think the problem lies with George Peros.
Starting point is 01:41:35 And Willie Dolan. Can I raise my hand and ask a question? Why can't you find Sergachev now? oh no is there a statute of limitations on this i think there probably is why yeah it also it also makes you look weak as hell yeah yeah that they can't they can't take that pr that means like steve dangle one it makes you look weak that you missed it yeah but it makes you look weaker that yeah because then then they're like okay so we're kowtailing to steve dangle okay there's makes you look weaker what if you're asking what are they running for office you're asking them to
Starting point is 01:42:05 do the right thing yeah but how about just doing what is right that's what i just and what is just yep yeah that's what i just said they don't that's weakness now yes in this era yes that's you know fucking dark i yeah i agree with you but damn that's dark they can't handle that kind of bad pr because then everybody's laughing at them and by the way everybody's already laughing at George, people don't have your role for nine years. You know, if you're a fan of the team that we're a fan of, not a lot's predictable these days. No.
Starting point is 01:42:39 It's not. But what is predictable is Lucy and their delicious flavors and the fact that they're always tobacco free and they've got pouches with an extra surprise because if you, each pouch holds a capsule that can be broken, releasing extra flavor and hydration. Are we into that? we are are we into um mint yeah are we into mango mango's my favorite mango's your favorite okay
Starting point is 01:43:03 uh berry citrus jesse i like a good citrus apple cider apple ice espresso listen however you want to use lucy remember that the flavors are all there for you and you can check it out online or there's also lucy store so it's the only pouch that gives you long lasting flavors whenever you to get 20% off your first order when you buy on load with the promo code Steve. I think you know how to spell that, but I'll spell it for you anyway.
Starting point is 01:43:29 S-T-E-V-E. And if you don't want to wait, just head to lucy.co slash stores to find a Lucy near you. Grab it today. And here comes the fine print. Lucy products are only for adults legal of age,
Starting point is 01:43:41 of legal age, excuse me. And every order is age verified. This product contains nicotine. Warning, nicotine is an addictive chemical. Jesse. go away we have a couple trades to get to yes and uh andre palat are now islanders and hey look they've got numbers can you read off the trades oh well i guess so um so susie uh said that he was given a drury did him a favor it's a third round pick by the way this is only the fourth
Starting point is 01:44:09 trade ever in 50 years between the two new york teams that's wow um which is kind of crazy and they've all been like player for draft pick kind of trades they've never been big uh susie will wear number four andre palat this is interesting the islanders are going to absorb his entire cap hit now matthew darsh uh has a lot has a very extensive history with andre palat because matthew darsh um uh was the assistant general manager in all on all the tampa bay uh teams under julian breezewalk i almost got it i said he was gonna end up in tampa no he ended up with a former tampa exec he also gets a couple of draft picks he gets the 2026 third round this year which is interesting i mean 2027 sixth rounder if you ever hit on a sixth round pick
Starting point is 01:44:50 then you're a god amongst men but uh andre palat only has next year to go with this deal and they did trade maxim siplikov who i believe they traded for nothing and so it really doesn't even work out to a six million dollar cap hit that the islanders are absorbing because they are dropping basically 30 of that off on new jersey's doorstep for siplikov who definitely needs a change of scenery He makes $2.25 million, Palat makes $6 million, and next year he's going to make $6 million. The actual money owed is a little less, but not much. The net difference is $3.75 million against the cap. So it really doesn't work out to, oh, people are like, I can't believe they absorbed the whole cap.
Starting point is 01:45:26 Well, that's kind of not how you can look at it. I saw his buyout number. Someone had it out there. It was like less than $2 million for two years. For Palat? Yeah. I was pretty surprised. Oh, Palat?
Starting point is 01:45:39 Yeah, for Palat. I thought you were talking about Siblicoff. Maybe what I saw was Siblicoff. they're not buying it you're you're going to the playoff yeah they got him to oh no no no not now i was like the the theory was like you use them for this playoff run and then you buy them out no no no you got a player i mean he's he's been so good over the course of his career like i wouldn't bet against him yeah i i like him back in the playoffs he needed a you know how much i love andre palat now my plot devil's jersey is out of date uh but but he needed a change of scenery
Starting point is 01:46:11 and i think listen if you're gonna take a bet and get a get a not bad draft pick and uh for a guy that was not working out under patrick wobb this is a good trade matthew darsh by the way i think everybody for both yeah i think matthew darsh um uh everybody needs to start paying attention to the islanders general manager because he is one of the more interesting cats out there uh in terms of how he looks at things i'm very very excited for the islanders in their future because it's Obviously, with Schaefer there, the goaltending has always been strong. But he's inherited Patrick Waugh. Patrick Waugh has done a very good job this year.
Starting point is 01:46:49 They've missed out on Romanov most of the season. It hasn't affected them. Right. This is a low-key sleeper, very good Islander team. Right. Can I make a little make it about the Leafs? Jesse, who has something, and then you're going to make it about the Leafs. Just on Andre Palat, that $6 million number in New Jersey became untenable.
Starting point is 01:47:09 for what he's providing he's never been a goal scorer but only four goals this season and six assists you'd expect that a six assist number to be a lot higher for that six million dollars and Tom Fitzgerald I guess to his credit in this instance is finally dumping salary something he should have been doing a long time ago so it's a good move for them the assets you got to pay to get rid of Palat I don't love it a third feels like a lot and then you're also taking on that siplikov deal who's also been not great at all so but at least he's 27 and you can kind of look at it as a mini project yeah he's kind of who he is at this point but you got a third for susie yes so the overall deal becomes uh that third's a wash yeah and then uh you're taking on siplikov
Starting point is 01:47:57 in that deal and you're setting off that that sixth in 2027 if you're darsh too you can always flip that third as a part of another deal if you want to make a bigger swing which i can see the islanders doing 100 and um let me make it about the leafs if carson susie gets you a frigging third get out there sell sell so literally what are you waiting for yeah are you joking holy shit get out there and move a third carson susie wow okay i'd also like to quickly uh unless do you have more on the on the islanders jess or no uh the the i was talking more on the new jersey side oh go ahead no no with the with the third round pick like the the islanders acquired it but so it's like new jersey is just losing the plot and sending out the third oh yeah
Starting point is 01:48:47 you're right yeah so it's not it's not like they it's not a wash for them they're paying the third round my bad yeah yeah i just had to double check too many metro teams yeah new york gets that third from the islanders but new jersey's still sending out a third so they are losing that third so that the islanders will take on pilates deal but it's something necessary that tom fitzgerald built he put himself in this own corner where he has to lose his third this is his own issue that he created so i shouldn't really give him credit for getting out of it but he got out of his own problem i was about to say like oh and sepikov's a young 27 year old all right never mind darsh also moves up in the third round because new jersey is uh is going to finish higher than probably yeah
Starting point is 01:49:31 than New York than his own. Almost definitely. Yeah. So I think, so I think so. Darsh gets two guys and moves up in the third round. That's, you know,
Starting point is 01:49:39 even if it's 10 spots, it's still something. Carson Susie to very, I think interesting depth piece for them. Like they're not, I wouldn't say like that's, that's one of their strengths. Now it's kind of become with Matthew Schaefer back there,
Starting point is 01:49:50 but you can always use a guy like Susie on the back end. I, I, I don't hate that deal at all for them. I would like to read you on a separate team in the Eastern conference, a, a, this is, I'm not going to tell you which team it is. Okay. But I'm going to
Starting point is 01:50:05 read this paragraph. So please. And then you're going to tell me who they are. Okay. The blank are tied for 15th in points percentage in the Eastern Conference at 5-2-8. Putting them squarely in the running for a lottery first round pick. They are two spots behind the Toronto
Starting point is 01:50:20 Maple Leafs, whose fans spend all of Tuesday night declaring their franchise dead and over after a loss. I repeat, the blank are behind that team if you need further evidence blah blah blah there's an image below who am i talking about is it the sense jesse who am i talking about that's a good guess the sense washington capitals the capitals i was wrong about them here are the here are the list of teams the capitals have lost to in january ottawa senators oi chicago blackhawks oi nashville predators florida panthers
Starting point is 01:50:56 vancouver canucks and last night the seattle kraken oh shit damn they are in rough shape now i want to shout out uh chris uh cerullo from russian machine never breaks there's a really great article breaking down sort of the numbers he said uh there is nothing good i can say about this team's five on five effort they had 11 shots on goal this is against the kraken and they were down 3-0 after two periods. At five on five, the Kraken finished up 53-36 in shot attempts, 27-15 in shots, 25-18 in scoring chances, 13-11 in high danger scoring chances. And if you want a good example of how this season has just imploded, look at the two teams' October 21st matchup in D.C. The Capitals left that with a 4-1 win, up 63-42 in shot attempts, 28-17 in
Starting point is 01:51:50 shots 28 12 in scoring chances and 13 to 2 and high danger scoring chances things have gone downhill alexander ovechkin scored his second goal of the season the 919th of his career uh sorry 22nd goal of the season uh and then um not only the yeah so i've done that they have basically fallen apart the capitals and this is a team that had a phenomenal regular season last year kind of ran into an easy early Montreal Canadiens first round last year, and they got steamrolled by the Hurricanes in round two. Like, this is really, really bad
Starting point is 01:52:26 and one of the least talked about stories in the NHL. One thing that's really interesting about those high danger numbers, though, is the Washington Capitals actually lead the league in high danger shots on goal. Oh, yeah? So I assume just nothing's fallen for them, but they are also very low in the league
Starting point is 01:52:41 in offensive zone time. So they might be playing a little... No, I can't even call it Carolina Hurricanes hockey because Carolina actually spends time in the zone and also just chucks a lot. They're getting a lot of opportunities that are very quick and going nowhere. So they're getting in, getting a high danger shot,
Starting point is 01:52:57 and then nothing else is happening in there. So they're losing a lot of battles, it seems like, on rebounds and in the corners. They also have some serious injuries. Dubois, Waugh, and Sandin were all out last night. Get out there and sell before the Capitals realize they should trade John Carlson. I don't think they're going to trade.
Starting point is 01:53:15 I don't think they will either, but he's expiring. I think that the Capitals are an interesting one because really, this is the same team that did so well last year. But they didn't win the President's Trophy last year, did they? They were up there. No, the Jets, right? The Jets did. They won the division.
Starting point is 01:53:33 They certainly won the division. So, listen, if the Leafs believe that they can rebound, the Capitals should believe next year they can rebound. This has just been a nightmare. I'm surprised. like i had them way better who do you sell like i look at their lineup i'm like it's not mcmichael it's probably not strong i don't think the capitals are out of it like the leafs are out of it and yet i agree with points they have the same amount of points same amount of points yeah they
Starting point is 01:53:59 both have 57 points it's just the leafs have played less one less game so the the leafs have the advantage in points percentage okay here's plus seven on the goal differential two for the capitals well the virtual and easy stat is just kind of earmark where teams are at and i look at the talent there and i don't look at it how i look at the least roster and i say there's a lot missing there's also um a lot to be optimistic with with the caps like in terms of young guys and like i've talked about this for years we were talking about the difference between the capitals and the penguins when the penguins were bad obviously things have flipped a little bit but like the capitals had mcmichael um the capitals have alexi protis they have the pro tie they have
Starting point is 01:54:45 yelia protis in the minors as well they have mirosh nachenko uh who's been kind of up and down there's a bit of a youth movement um with washington i don't know if it's in abundance exactly but like they're not this old slow team that is old and slow and that's all they are and you forgot the most important thing they have the better hudson coal hudson ah true is do they have coal or quinn they have coal okay is it quinn is that admitted yes yeah there's lane coal sound sure no i know a hundred percent that the capitals have coal jesse goes yes no i i think you're right too there you go you want proof no delete it delete it i don't like it um anyways i just want to make a joke about that no no no he's supposed
Starting point is 01:55:39 to be really good he is he's supposed to be really good yeah um no i like you right now damn they're uh they uh they're they're not like in trouble as an organization yeah i think that's a good way they're a good candidate to bounce back exactly even if they do miss the playoffs this year which i could see it happening you know they're they're probably going to be a 9 10 or 11 seed you know kind of just out of that wild card spot i'm still picking the washington capitals next year to make the playoffs yeah i i do wonder how it works internally there because like i'm sure there have been promises made to ovechkin like we are going to make the playoffs basically until your career is done which doesn't sound like it's the end of the season does it no it
Starting point is 01:56:29 sounds like he's playing again next year which is crazy yeah right he's going for a thousand he's not gonna get there but you know don't say that if he plays two more seasons don't say that that's that's like his bat signal is you just tell him he can't reach a certain goal total we never thought he'd get to 900 and look where we are what is he at 919 920 now 919 and if if Wow. If they are missing the playoffs this year, is that really how he wants to go out? I don't think so.
Starting point is 01:56:57 It's how Gretzky went out and it sucked. Yeah. You know, I'd rather him go out. If he's not going to win the cup, go out trying in the second round. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 01:57:07 Whatever. Anyway, let's fire it up. Thank you so much for listening. I will be doing a late night stream tomorrow night, starting at 10. Yay. Definitely tune in for that.
