Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction. Wanna bet? It's back at you. Woo! S-D-P-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wild, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! You know, I woke up this morning with a show line, a show outline that we would be ready to go with,
Starting point is 00:00:24 but we've already had like two or three big headlines happen today. the severson trade somebody else is backed out of the uh ottawa senator's uh bidding process which is going predictably unwell and and the most important news of the day is adam got a haircut yeah oh congratulations to alanis yes congrats to my mom one of the greatest runs in canadian television history that's right the maryland denna show ended today and ended today officially and uh we shot it all last week but it was like uh it was kind of oh yeah well i mean they're not pretending to be live the show is live and it was on today and you were there it's as live as this show is that's how live it is this show is super live so do you look at this
Starting point is 00:01:16 rested fuck over here that looks out here spoiling state secrets yeah but he's just look at him what do you mean you're glowing like a pregnant woman well you got it you got a haircut you you got a haircut that's not offensive but it sounds it sounds offensive no it's a compliment yeah but it's just something that just it has a tinge of offense but it's not offensive at all i i get it yeah you get it i get it and i don't retract but i don't fully understand i don't retract i don't you got a beautiful haircut thank you that's the most clean shave i've ever seen you thank you look at this jacket i know look at this glowing man uh maddie was already chirping me for my mclaren f1 jacket that i'm wearing she's like oh going racing today huh
Starting point is 00:02:01 if anybody out there gets a chance to watch the final maryland dennis show adam wilde is hosting it the first segment and uh from what i've seen it's very good yeah it was it you know what it's really nice and i think goodbye shows always have that tendency of being like a little heavy and nobody wants that uh so this was actually really fun and light and i got to the whole thing was that she brought i got to come out in the first segment and and interview her and kind of get it all set up and then at the end we come back out but there's some surprise guests in there as well like are you hard-hitting oh yeah imagine you're about like politics yeah yeah so anyway what do you think about sleepy joe these days
Starting point is 00:02:43 listen to the conservatives they're doing a lot listen i know you've been on it again thoughts i know you've been on tv for many years and i think what everyone wants to know is who did you vote for yeah in every election each election who'd you vote for every single one dating all the way back yeah so you know it was it's really really nice and um i think um i think it's going to be a uh an interesting change for her because my mother if you don't know has done radio and television every single day for over 35 years and so is in this same format so she would go do the morning show and then an hour later be live on the air with the tv show which they only in the last few years have they switched it to like a non-live format uh because they had another they
Starting point is 00:03:28 have your morning the morning show for ctv going in there so they don't have time to switch over the sets in time the the irony of adam and i's friendship is uh the way my mom got into your mom show was uh they were pregnant at the same time that's funny and she would talk about being pregnant and my mom would be like ah i am also pregnant and i am almost exactly as pregnant wow because we're a month apart we're a month apart that's isn't that wild that's wild and then oh yeah you know what i think they should own a business together later yeah yeah your mom should have children your mom should have should have showed up in 89 when you're old see this one this one's gonna work with that one yeah you know look at the size of the heads
Starting point is 00:04:09 they won't be able to make mutual friends that's right can't even fit them both through the door together no this is terrible um we should get them a really large friend really tall friend no hello uh hey jesse blake a question for you can you bring up what i have just texted to you uh somebody else who famously had a goodbye this week would be steve dangle the guy sitting to my left yeah uh and if you're watching this you're right and the reason that i bring this up is that um uh uh you know a lot of people said hey steve we will miss you but elliot friedman did not elliot friedman wrote all the best steve will we miss you and i just and i he didn't even put the question mark you know elliot's not
Starting point is 00:04:57 punctuation is for for you know plebeians right who cares but i did did you ever get that question answered will they miss you i i know that tweet is still up by the way he couldn't be bothered no correct it i didn't have the heart to even like take the piss like i didn't even have the heart to be like no you won't i should have just responded no you won't it's so good it's so perfect it's perfect you can't miss me i'm never in the building exactly there you go so uh well here's here's my question yeah a bunch of the stuff on the hockey night set is mine it's it's not yours do i take it back it's not yours yeah what okay you haven't you since you've never told that story 2020 let's say let's say january of 2020 yeah you must have been in that
Starting point is 00:05:47 building less than a handful of times half a dozen i'm pretty close oh yeah wow i'm like what Jesse said five, and you said six. Oh, wow. Big difference. That's wild. I think I'm kind of right. Okay, so the way this happened was I populated the sports net, or sorry, the ice surfing set, which was in the CBC studios, with a lot of my own memorabilia.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Like, there's my book. There's books I was gifted. There's a stick from the Columbus All-Star game. There's a clover. there's a pq clover that you can see prominently featured over the shoulder often of friedman sometimes sam constantino uh whoever's sitting at the end seat uh furthest to the right it's a it's a pat quinn clover that uh a friend gave me years ago when i put in a walmart frame and i just had it in the background of ice surfing behind me and then the world stopped because of covid and so
Starting point is 00:06:53 they someone just packed all that stuff up in a box when it became apparent no one was going in and then they moved sports net out of the cbc studios up to the sports net studios and for months months i tried to track down my stuff months i was like does anyone know where any of this is right and the way i discovered it all still existed is one day i was watching tv i'm like that's my stuff so so um do you feel like maybe this is your chant this is your contribution to hockey history that your stuff is on the hockey night in canada set and that you should keep it there i have sort of thought of that have you given that a thought because i feel like i did take one thing back like are you really gonna say this no you're really gonna i i took
Starting point is 00:07:41 one thing back and no one even asked if it was gone oh yeah it was uh my curtis joseph mask it's It's in the background of all my LFR videos. Oh, good that you brought that back. I think you need to keep that. Oh, yeah. I had to bring that back. The rest of it, though, do you really need it? No, but I want it.
Starting point is 00:07:55 I mean, it's not like you don't have stuff. Okay, well, then send them an email. There was one book I got from an author named Krista Collins. It's about, like, the first woman to ever play professional sports. Yeah. It's a novel. And I was like, like, I'm like, it's cool that it's on the set, but I wanted to read that. You know, you could just get another.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Can I get another copy? No, but this one's free. No. This one's free. That's free. Well, if it's free, it lasts forever at Steve's house. Hey, listen, to quote Jesse from last show, it's not a series until you play a game at home.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Or lose a game at home. You lose a game at home. And they haven't even lost at home yet. The Florida Panthers win last night in overtime. We are going to talk about the game in just a second. But first, though, I want to talk about, I want to jump into Dave here, and then I want to come back with it.
Starting point is 00:08:45 That quote. What's the quote? so that quote i got tagged on it on instagram because underneath uh one of the nhl's instagram posts somebody wrote series don't actually start till a home team loses oh and that comment had 630 likes somebody else tagged me they're like they're like hey series doesn't start i chirped you in today's cup check video that i don't think is up yet oh yeah because you actually you fucked the quote up what do you mean it's the oh yeah series doesn't start until you lose at home yeah no it's not you lose at home it's someone loses at home no yeah that team loses at home yeah but
Starting point is 00:09:25 it's not like teams are like oh great we lost at home now now we can yeah that's no that's that's what i'm making fun of oh so i fucked it up what are you talking about off to a rip-roaring start I was making fun of the old quote that zeroes don't start. What are you talking about? What are you talking about? We went over this last show for like 40 minutes. I'm distracted because you have ice
Starting point is 00:09:51 surfing. I was trying to play. I was trying to get the old videos ice surfing, but the Sportsnet player was being kind of wonky. I didn't throw to it. The Sportsnet player? Thanks. No. Anyway. I worked there for a week. Let's talk to Dave
Starting point is 00:10:06 who's waiting on the line. We're going to talk about the Stanley Cup bods and then we're gonna actually talk about what happened last night after you can bet them you can bet that with david bastel brought to you by sports interaction get in the action and make a play 19 plus please play responsibly florida and vegas it's going to at least five games dave bastel we get a game saturday night uh in florida uh it was obviously a big gutsy win yesterday what are the odds now how does it has is vegas still a favorite in florida like how does that oh yeah florida slight favorite slight favorite at sports interaction a 185 compared to uh vegas at a 197 185 to 197 over under five and a half goals guys um i i mean they are at home right
Starting point is 00:10:56 uh most of the time the home favorite is a larger favorite than it is but i don't know there's some pretty good arguments to be made that you know vegas could have been up three nothing heading into uh saturday night but uh how do you guys look at this one i think i want the over on the goals yeah you said it's five and a half five and a half yes i think we get a high scoring affair 180 yeah see so the reason i disagree with that is normally the high scoring games happen at the beginning of the series when the teams are figuring them out figuring each other out and yesterday was tight it's i think the hose is about to start uh going down to a trickle where's this analogy going i think he started somewhere and he's like i don't know where i'm
Starting point is 00:11:39 gonna go that's exactly what happened i'll find it that's exactly what happened um dave what else might go from a hose to a trickle at sports I'm going to use that line. Don't. It's bad. I'll credit you, of course. I don't want to take this. Fair enough.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Vegas, the ability to get Vegas's dogs is crazy. So $2 Steve is sprinkling on that. All right. Dave, what else we got here just for people to check out going into Saturday night's game? Saturday's game. You know what? Right now, Vegas, to win the series is a 140-140.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Florida, if you think Florida has this chance at tying this series and maybe winning this series, now's a good time to jump on it at 3.19. I'll be honest with you guys. Not a lot of Florida bats coming in to win the series. You could also go series prices as far as how many games it's going to be in. Is it a 4-2 series win? Is it a 4-1 series win? does it go to seven games so stuff like that and of course your your goal total shots on goal
Starting point is 00:12:54 assists points everything like that uh all gearing up for a saturday night game in uh sunrise beautiful and last one last thing how do you feel about winnipeg jets draft choice shane doan fulfilling his destiny and joining the toronto maple leafs i was just talking to my wife about it uh last ever winnipeg jet 1.0 to retire yeah yeah he actually he actually played as a jet in his first year in the old winnipeg arena and uh class act and perhaps the olive branch to a certain number 34 as you guys probably have talked about ad nauseum earlier on in the podcast no no we're talking about that coming up and don't worry it'll be ad nauseum yeah oh yeah it'll be it'll make you nauseous it should be no uh shane
Starting point is 00:13:43 don't uh has the potential of being a future general manager in this league so i think you got a really good uh addition to the front office not just special advisor a lot of times you sprinkle a title of hey he's a helper he's a special advisor he's like he actually comes across and he's worked with team canada as well um of um of a guy that will have a future executive position somewhere in the nhl be it with the leafs or maybe a different hockey team once he develops that kind of experience and so forth. Can I ask one more Winnipeg question before we go? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Blue Bombers start the season tonight. Are they the Grey Cup favorites? Yes, they are, Jez. Slight favorites at Sports Interaction. They are anticipating a Blue Bombers-Hamilton Grey Cup, so is tonight's game
Starting point is 00:14:33 a Grey Cup preview? It very well could be, right? I'm sure Toronto's going to have something to say about it, the LOI, so I'm not quite sure about the red blocks but um yes the bombers are slight favorites so i shouldn't see even slight favorites they are they are probably like a 65 favorite right now at sports interaction to win the great cup which will uh we'll see how the season goes you gotta you gotta keep everybody healthy especially that quarterback which has had injury problems before but uh i'm glad the season is here
Starting point is 00:15:02 and let's play ball all right let's do it steve will be watching i'm sure now the matthews trade rumor hose will go down to a trickle stop like this segment started as a hose and ended as a trickle thank you dave uh we'll see you on monday buddy awesome thanks fellas hey fellas yeah ever wished you were just a little bit taller i'm sure jesse has i have never had that okay well you know if you've ever seen steve and i next to jesse in a picture you might think boy i bet those guys think they were wish they were taller and we do yes uh now uh we get you covered with today's sponsor it's kanzuri kanzuri kanzuri oh uh they make shoes we know they're italian kanzuri jesse i think we can reliably assume that's right and you know hey listen let's be honest that part of
Starting point is 00:15:53 the world makes some great shoes people travel specific your country is shaped like a shoe kanzuri is actually uh they make shoes that make you 2.8 inches taller without anyone knowing so let me show you my oh you're wearing them right now now i'm gonna come in front of the desk okay and you're gonna have to see what i look like standing on my bare foot and then standing in my kanzuri kanzuri all right you ready okay yeah all right let me see it so i'm gonna this is It's definitely not going to work. Matty camera work. No, it's going to work.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Oh, yeah, totally. Me on my foot. Yeah. And then this is me on my kanzuri. Oh. You have to look. Look at the nipple line. All right.
Starting point is 00:16:36 There's the nipple line. This is. Whoa. Look at those. Yeah. That's it. Anyway, listen. Two point inches taller.
Starting point is 00:16:44 And as we all know, sometimes two point inches is all that you need. That's all. What? You need. What? Girls get heels. They get makeup. they get push-up bras why can't men get it good put it back on the table they do they actually
Starting point is 00:16:58 look great and you what you the thing is like you can't tell see like you can't tell that there's like a lifted inside of it it's pretty cool what there you go there okay now you put it here look at that no it's great it looks like you should that looks like a normal ass shoe right there and you should you should definitely use these shoes they're very very cool and we want to give you for a limited time our listeners are gonna get 15 off with the order dangle at kanzuri.com uh it's spelled c-o-n-z-u-r-i kanzuri this site is already 30 off and with your code you get an extra 15 off what so to buy these shoes you're gonna get 45 off your entire order what okay all you need to do is uh help us out here use the support the show use the promo code dangle
Starting point is 00:17:43 You're out of breath. At C-O-N-Z-U-R-I dot com. I'm not as flexible as I used to be. He did a lot of feats of strength. I was trying to do stuff. What's the code? What's the code? I get it.
Starting point is 00:17:56 Dangle. Dangle. Dangle. Check it out. Kanzuri.com. Let me just throw something at you. Going into last night's game, I'm going to throw it at you.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Hit you right in the face. Panthers penalties per game. Okay. hit me on the season they took three and a half penalties per game that feels in round one they took 3.9 penalties per game that's about even higher in round three they took 3.5 penalties per game right on average in the finals yeah and i got goofy 12 penalties a game for the first two games which prompted one of the best quotes from paul morris that i think i've ever seen a stanley cup finals coach uh uh come out with and he said i think we've made the
Starting point is 00:18:46 series more physical than it needs to be and i don't need carter verhage laying five hits in a game you know how many hits the panthers had in game three 14 14 to 18 from vegas there you go in florida one that's what i'm saying it's not about the hit now i i i think so i went i took you through season round one round three in the finals going into last night's game there was one specific round i left off do you guys want to hear it more than more than i need to breathe round two remember that during the season the panthers had three and a half per game round one 3.9 round three 3.5 and the finals going into last night 12 the average amount of penalties taken in round two versus the toronto maple leafs 2.2 penalties per game you ever just exhausted
Starting point is 00:19:39 you ever just man i just i sat back and i looked at that stat i was like this is fucking hilarious are you kidding me you ever just unendingly miserable and exhausted i know and trained so here's the thing though i'm wondering if i'm wondering if that this sounds so stupid and i'm gonna get quoted on this and people are gonna hate this but let me ask you something is part of the reason that you know the perception about the leafs you know other general managers fucking with them like yeah uh uh yeri satari or harry satari uh going you know the leaf signing him out of finland 31 year old goaltender never played a game in the nhl and care and arizona who's not going to make the playoffs for the next decades like yeah you know what we could
Starting point is 00:20:20 use the two games literally fucking up his professional hockey career right just for fun and we there were it was written i think in a pierre lebrun article that people just fuck with the leafs for fun um in this particular case i'm wondering if paul if if dubas isn't there anymore do the leafs kind of just fade into the background now and they're not so pronounced it's everyone gonna claim every penguin off waivers now no i wondered if like i think it was the leafs and dubas because we sort of had this attitude of like we're smarter than you and that's why people love dunking on the leafs and i wonder if if that sort of stuff maybe maybe that disappears into the background now because we don't have a gm you know who's been billed as that that wasn't fair
Starting point is 00:20:59 to kyle kyle's never claimed that but that's sort of what was it was put out there when he was hired truly the perfect storm he is the gm of the toronto maple leafs and worst of all under 50 fuck that guy fuck that guy under 50 oh fuck you get out of here listen if you're a non-leaf fan and you're rolling your eyes i get it but leaf fans you get me now let's talk about it is fun with the penalty stats do you have toronto's penalty stats i actually don't oh okay because i was just wondering if it's an instance where uh it was even on both sides regardless well it probably was you know why are you evening it out so low right from like given what floor i'm just that series man from like the beginning of the babcock era even i want to say the leafs take
Starting point is 00:21:47 very few and draw very few and people just go oh well they play a style that doesn't invite it like really with different personnel and different coaches and over the years and it's no it's a self-fulfilling prophecy you just go into every game going this is how we're going to call it because it's a refereeing and then you do yeah yeah oh they're they're not good so um so let's get into the panthers game and no least and and really uh Sorry, Satari. Matthew Kachuk called this the gutsiest win he's ever been a part of. And it starts in the first Vegas and Florida pretty even.
Starting point is 00:22:25 They end the period, you know, sort of one all. But Vegas goes up in the second period. And this is sort of a big deal because it comes from a guy who Florida gave up for nothing. And is now tied. Finally, somebody is tied with Leon Dreisaitl in playoff goals. It's Jonathan Marcheseau, who has been a spectacular performer for the Vegas Golden Knights since the moment he put on a jersey. He's one of the originals, along with Riley Smith. You know, he's one of the guys that that has been there forever from the beginning.
Starting point is 00:22:56 Well, if they ever do a Legends row, he'll be on it. Damn. Has to be right. Yeah. You know, so that goal to me, I was like, oh, no, like that. That's a dagger goal, given the history and the fact that it's him. he's so good the pass from eichel 17th assist on this on the playoffs man holy shit how does that make it through how do you even come away with oh this is a good idea even like forget thinking
Starting point is 00:23:24 you can pull it off you're like oh yeah this is a high percentage pass i'm about to make that should have been picked off and cleared yep three times over yep and somehow he got it through and march or so johnny on the spot for march or so it's 13 goals in 13 games oh my like his his run he started off very cold to begin the first round didn't score in the last 13 games he has 13 goals and i believe it's an eight game point streak now in the playoffs which is a that's just bonkers vegas record but all the vegas records are being broken this season stupid it's stupid and uh Four goals in the first three games of the Stanley Cup final is tied for third most ever in the first three games. Do you know who one of the players he's tied with or two of the players?
Starting point is 00:24:10 They're both penguins. They're both penguins. Yeah. Two penguins have four goals in the first three games of the Stanley Cup final. Kessel? No. Oh, that'd be funny. One's a free square.
Starting point is 00:24:23 Okay. Lemieux. Yes. Okay. Wow. That should be the free square. so the other is not the other is a fun trivia bar trivia uh answer from one of the long penguins runs in the recent memory brian rust no last guess jake gensel jake had four goals in the
Starting point is 00:24:46 first three games of a stanley cup final okay yeah i'm uh amazed by like these the the penalty records that we were talking about like this series might break it right uh or it's it's gonna get up there um but the the records for the stanley cup final are so underwhelming and it's it's so hard yeah it's just so hard like these guys are so exhausted it's the two best teams um so marches so what is it it's the third most goals through three games for three games yeah that's i think mike bossy leads with six six and three wow yeah even that's like it's not crazy you know the record yeah you know what i mean like that's extremely good but that's the record we're trying to remember i think it's mike bossy with six gretzky with five and then marcia so
Starting point is 00:25:38 lemieux and kensel with four gretzky with five yeah that's it it shows you how playoff hockey is played and that these records don't blow you away you know oh it's always the first and second round where they rack up crazy points especially these 80s guys that it was like you know seed one versus seed eight and the eighth seed would be like the toronto maple leafs who had a losing record but there was 21 teams and you had to be horrendous not to make it you know who leads defensive scoring in these playoffs they lead by five points no evan bouchard man the oilers are goofy hasn't played in two rounds goofy um and then so with two minutes and 13 seconds to go uh the florida panthers are pressuring the vegas golden knights and they're starting to get within
Starting point is 00:26:22 that two minute window of the end of the period where you got to lock it down but it is the end of the third and there is a lot at stake and you could make the argument if if vegas holds on to this that two more minutes that series is done it's just a formality 100 but matthew kachuk mr people magazine mr hey i went to school with jason tatum even though we weren't that friend that meant like we weren't like super tight but you know everybody's making a big deal everybody loves to bring it up hey jason tatum tell us more about jason he's like i don't know we didn't we just went we were high level athletes we're at the same school i went to high school with adam wilde you don't impress me yeah yeah uh matt kachuk scores and it's assisted by
Starting point is 00:27:01 carter verhage and aaron akblad carter verhage having an unbelievable playoff as well and he'll come back later yeah but but can we talk a little bit about matthew could uh could can we can we use clutch can we put clutch and i do clutch chuck clutch yeah or to clutch not clutch all right we landed on can we talk about it he had he had a bad game like matthew chuck wasn't out there for a lot of moments of it because he wasn't uh he was half injured and he also wasn't skating well he took a pretty nasty hit yeah and then and then he forced himself out there in all instances there's there's a great sequence that um the panel showed where um early on uh when a player on the fourth line lost their stick and matthew kachuk hops out uh onto the ball over the boards
Starting point is 00:27:51 he's like i'm getting out there i don't because the guy's coming to the bench to grab the stick and he's like no you're going to the bench and i'm going to be on the ice in those instances matthew kachuk is always forcing the play on himself if you watch any power play whenever the pp1 comes out he sticks around for pp2 even though he probably should get the fresher body he's gonna take those extra 20 seconds and that's why he's always in on these goals he's always forcing himself into these situations and each and every time he's around it and he's either gonna score he's gonna assist on it's fantastic hockey it's funny it's funny that you say you didn't have that great of a game because there were five golden knights who are on the ice for
Starting point is 00:28:25 all three panthers goals uh white cloud haig stevenson stone uh who's the other guy on that line whoever the other guy on that line is uh they were out there for all five goals there was only one panther uh out there for all three florida goals kachuk it's unbelievable like he's just i know uh analytically it's difficult to quantify but like he's been easily the most clutch player in these playoffs easily the the most clutch non-goalie i guess you can say uh the amount of game winning goals the amount of game tying goals the amount of final three minute goals however you want to quantify it like he's absolutely ridiculous and whenever you need one he's there yeah and for for me like the defining moment of the if florida does something crazy here
Starting point is 00:29:22 and goes on to win the stanley cup the defining moment might be uh barbachev and i think it was marcia so on a two on o uh at dress just before we're talking about this kachuk goal they come down the ice it's just clear path to the net hits the post oh it was it was three minutes ago just before they pulled the goalie barbachev goes off the post the puck in the corner they come down On the other hand, they pull the goalie and they score. That could have been the entire series if he just finishes that play. I give them credit, though, because if it was the Leafs, they would have passed it 40 times and missed the net.
Starting point is 00:29:53 The Leafs could hit the post. No, no. They would not have shot. They would not have shot. Not this year's team. Gus Forsling takes a penalty for tripping with 12 seconds to go. And you think about the playoffs, and you think about the third period in Game 3.
Starting point is 00:30:09 It's the first time we've seen a Panthers-Stanley Cup home game since 1996. and you're gonna the ref is gonna call gus forsling to to you know with like this is something that does not happen in the playoffs however it was an even up call uh because um sorry it wasn't yeah it wasn't even up call um florida and vegas left in a tied game yeah florida and vegas uh finished with six penalties and five or sorry six power plays and five power plays apiece so no that one is so tricky like i don't know where you guys landed on it but it look like he tripped over the the foot you know and like i also look at it and like i'm like okay you guys would never call this in another series why are you calling it now i i look at it versus
Starting point is 00:30:52 i don't look at the actual play anymore in the playoffs i look at what's been the standard so far well the standard in this game was we call everything i know that cross check call uh the boarding call the tripping call like there's been so many little ticky tack calls that they've just been gone there's 11 power plays that's crazy the hockey we grew up with was so anachronistic that uh we would get upset when a penalty was called because so much stuff was let go when something was finally called we're like well how the why is that where you drew the line these days it's how is that not a call how is that not a call so to see the online community seemingly fairly united in oh that's a tough call yeah so i mean it's a tough call ron mclean who's interesting to listen
Starting point is 00:31:41 to when there's a ref debate because he kind of comes at it from the ref perspective so we get no insights into how they think unless it's through like an intermediary so i look at ron mclean in some instances as that guy so he his explanation for that is in these really tight situation these really tight calls is it a player who's injured or is there an imminent scoring chance and on that play there was an imminent scoring chance that was affected by the player's skate when he's trying to hop into the middle of the ice so that's one where the ref is hands gotta go up you know it'd be so much easier if we just asked is it so when i hear something like that my mind goes to i just call the fucking rules all the time who cares about the context of the game and the storyline that's
Starting point is 00:32:23 going on and the even ups and all that stuff but this is how referees think so we have to look at the game from that perspective i guess as well until the nhl changes their ways so that post that jesse mentioned the power play that we've just been talking about with you know a minute 40 left on it to start the period and and florida stops it they kill it call it off and biggest penalty kill in florida panthers history right afterwards and this is the craziest part is right afterwards who who carter for goddamn haggie seventh goal of the playoffs uh this guy is the ultimate late bloomer in the nhl um this is a guy that was the leafs traded him in 2017 along with four other guys for michael grabner and his butt goals um he i i think i don't i mean he was
Starting point is 00:33:13 definitely a late bloomer but he also had some bad luck so during covid i remember being bored out of my mind um like the first wave of covid and uh there was the emergence of anton hudobin yes i was like okay i remember him being a solid goalie though throughout his career but not like this so i was like what led to this being his first starting gig basically right and i looked throughout his career and it's like oh well he started here so he was behind this goalie and this goalie and then he got traded to this team he was behind this goalie and this goalie and so the leafs had a really deep cupboard when they had carter verhage and they traded him because they had too many contracts the deal was the islanders get to dump cap in michael
Starting point is 00:34:04 grabner the leafs get to dump contract slots none of those other four players hit chris gibson kind of um verhege ended up hitting so that was the risk that they took but when he was with the islanders he got that was an okay situation but then he got traded to tampa which meant he was in tampa's system which meant he was buried right so he finally plays with tampa like like a quarter of a season and he's good but again you're still buried tampa so it wasn't until he went to florida that like yeah he bloomed but that's because he got to play a shift yeah who did uh tampa trade
Starting point is 00:34:47 away to acquire carter raggy i know the answer yeah i know you do who is it adam this is one of your favorite names to say chris left my favorite guy medalist to properly say his name
Starting point is 00:35:03 you have to stay down here the only person on earth who does you have to talk like this chris chris chris oh yeah very good latvian accent thank you thank you very much yes uh right next to my one of my former nations apparently my family's partially from lithuania which is right next i don't know that makes it your yes it is i show up to lithuanian night with jonas valen chunas oh yeah for the raptors you you and jonas raving my lithuanian flag jesse you want to come to my house in toronto tonight toronto ronto it's in this eastern part of toronto called ajax ix it's
Starting point is 00:35:36 actually called ix ix yes it's also not toronto what it's not but i was just told lithuania is latvia i said it was next door that's good next door um so you know what it's going to be a very very interesting saturday night and i'm excited for this um glad we got the odds and stuff on the table from dave um and i think you know it's going to be one of those things where um if if if vegas wins i still don't feel like this is going to be over had they won last night i would have come on here and be like they'll like florida okay i grab a win but panthers have already come back from three one down so i guess it's a great team they won a game that's the key to florida's success winning win one game and they're i i think it's just give them the cup
Starting point is 00:36:23 That puts them to 7-0 in overtimes this postseason. Calgary Flames fans are just walking into walls at this point. Oh, yeah. They got 7 in a row, and we couldn't get 1 in 17? All right. There was a Panthers and Verhage stat. Here it is from NHL PR. Carter Verhage is the only player in NHL history
Starting point is 00:36:46 to score multiple OT goals in consecutive postseasons, and one of three to have two in multiple playoff years at any point in his career following Joe Sackick. Wow. With two in 96 in 2004 and Esa Tikkanen, two in 91 in 97. Cool. This dude was traded twice and then allowed to walk to not just a divisional but state rival.
Starting point is 00:37:15 The Lightning, who are renowned for their player evaluation, their talent evaluation we're just like ah and let him walk to the panthers i don't think even carter verhage thought he would have 42 goals no i i don't i i do if you ask carter verhage on opening night if he would have 40 goals this year i'm sure he'd be positive about it but he wouldn't be like confident no that's unreal it's no it was dude's 27 when he was picked in the third round by the Leafs it was a guarantee I so there's always stories about uh this player was traded and one member of the organization was just like god damn it we can't do that I want to know if there's someone within the Leafs organization current or past who is like I did my best to tell Lou
Starting point is 00:38:11 lamorello not to trade carter verhage and he did it anyway you know there's people in the florida organization who were like we cannot lose jonathan marcheseau right yeah yeah who was there a guy advocating for carter verhage so it's a little different because carter verhage let's remember never played a game for the toronto maple leafs or islanders the man was a child when he was straight the child who knew what he was gonna be at 27 me when i wrote for the leafs nation.com the one the one we really should be ragging on is tampa yes yeah because they sort of knew also he had more than a point a game with the syracuse crunch like and that's difficult to do in the ahl that's what i'm saying he was buried i forgot stood out in that system i forgot that the syracuse
Starting point is 00:39:01 crunch aren't the toronto marley's that's crazy he played two games ever for the marley's ever like really yeah two games ever and he got an assist but that's it he's in the ohl he's played for half a point a game player he also played for the bridgeport sound tigers 29 points in 45 games pretty good i'm gonna fight you the dude was in the ohl when he got traded let's get mad at the leafs for it though poor asset management fuck him we gotta do it here and then let's let's make a clip video and be like how the leafs how the leaves could be florida right now yeah and then and then have me going let's do a tiktok video where it's just verhege goals to like really loud techno music and and and uh interspersed with uh the crying jordan meme and a maple leafs logo
Starting point is 00:39:47 underneath it yeah you know yeah that's what we need 100 we need we need memes from 10 years ago copens i did always like the crying jordan meme i thought it was funny it had a moment they had a good moment um the leafs speaking of added arizona legend shane doan as an assistant general manager it hasn't been announced yet i forgot this happened this happened and you're supposed to do a video on it allegedly allegedly well no he hasn't been announced yet um he left the coyotes in 2021 because he originally he had joined after he retired in 2017 um austin matthews has several tweets about him throughout his timeline. One in 2017, one in 2019.
Starting point is 00:40:26 And this one is, I think, really nice. It's a picture of Doan and Matthews lining up at Center Ice in Arizona saying, thank you for everything you've done for hockey in Arizona and inspiring kids like me growing up playing the game in the Valley. Congratulations on your jersey retirement,
Starting point is 00:40:40 Doan, you're so well-deserved. Now, Austin Matthews grew up a Shane Doan fan. And listen, I have nothing bad or good to say about Shane Doan. And I really don't know what he's like as an executive. But this does feel a little bit like, hey, Austin, you probably want to stay, right? Well, I think it certainly helps. You know how we looked at how soft the Leafs have been over the years?
Starting point is 00:41:05 Not so much this year, but just over the years. And we've gone, that's not how Brendan Shanahan played at all. Right. Right. Well, now they have a front office that includes Brendan Shanahan and Captain Elbow Shane Dome, who skated like basically horizontally like to just yeah especially that run that run they had to the west final uh 10 years ago he was that he was so dirty but so effective yeah it's it's like him and dustin brown oh yeah yep yep their primes at the same time well he was no he was back half
Starting point is 00:41:39 but still you know made it all the way to the third round so like you gotta think that's maybe the mindset he's going to apply um i'll tell you the inside baseball thing about this that's great so we keep talking about how this is shanahan's team and everything is shanahan shanahan and shanahan front facing shanahan front facing yep then we see the brad for living press conference and he's a charmer oh yeah i think he's a seems like a good guy he's a charmer shane doan i can tell you from my limited experience doing locker room
Starting point is 00:42:16 interviews adored adored by the media door really media why he's just a just a pleasant charming guy with good quotes and a nice smile now AGMs never speak to the media he's also not an AGM
Starting point is 00:42:31 he'll be assisted he'll he has the Jason Spezza role okay so be he'll be a special assistant to the regional manager formerly brandon pridham's role yeah they bought brandon pridham's okay i'm right now right now he is yeah but he got the promotion yeah so shane down yeah he'll be a special assistant to the general manager yeah agms don't typically talk but i could i mean they could do an announcement he's a he's a guy that's a very very valuable piece of the arizona coyotes franchise was their
Starting point is 00:43:00 biggest name for 10 years i can see that they would do a press conference with them i could see it happening and they work together everyone forgets true living and don't yeah so for living was in phoenix can i read uh this thread from craig morgan because yeah bradshaw living was the agm uh in arizona and that's how they got to know each other so this is what craig morgan said it is no secret that doan has wanted to be more involved in hockey ops than he was with the coyotes his experiences working for the league and hockey canada helped build his knowledge base doan and new toronto gm bradshaw living have also been good friends for a long time a relationship that was forged while true living was the agm in arizona true living has described doan as a great hockey
Starting point is 00:43:41 mind obviously it is the coyotes ownership group's prerogative to structure their executive staff as they see fit but doan was not content with what was perceived as more of a ceremonial role and it's another blow a big one to watch the franchise greatest icon walk away whoa so you wanted to move up in the world and the leafs and fragile living giving that opportunity to be here to hear craig morgan say something like that it's another blow like it craig's been uh on the uh cutting edge of the reporting down there and has been very uh and i think rightfully so rah-rah coyotes optimistic yeah and i think and i don't mean to take that away i mean that as a compliment right there's so many people that are down on them he's always been the one going hey let me
Starting point is 00:44:24 clear this up it's not as bad as you think there's not a lot of people who are like no the coyote situation's fine yeah so for him to say that i think that really says something right like that really that does mean something and i i i'm curious about how this all plays out i don't know what this means for the toronto maple leafs but it does mean a sort of a different um this is a different group with a different mindset that's going to look at it and i actually like the fact that they seem to be fusing um uh brandon printem laurence gilman i guess is not involved in any hockey related decisions anymore he's managing other things but uh it's uh treliving doan wickenheiser and uh hardy and pritam not pritam pritam's in there oh yeah it is you you said
Starting point is 00:45:07 don't instead of pritam my but oh well you just add in don't add in there's a lot of cooks in that yeah there's a lot there's a lot of people work there it seems like they're fusing some new ideas to what the ethos has been though and you know maybe they i don't think they're just going to go out and get players that play like shane doan because shane don'ts here no but i definitely would love to know what you know shane doan values and i would love to know a little bit more about brad true living about what he values acquiring this summer because there's again there's a ton of cap space there's 10 unrestricted free agents with this is going to be a different team there's value in having a former player voice that people can or people
Starting point is 00:45:45 will listen to uh i think that's sort of what spezza was you know we saw in the amazon documentary Sheldon Keefe sort of used Spezza as a, hey, can you please deliver this message sort of thing and let me know how the guys are feeling. I think Kyle used him in a similar way. You know, Brad Treliving, I don't know if everyone
Starting point is 00:46:05 was like, yeah, we respect your resume from the Columbus Chill. Is that where he played? The Columbus Chill. Oh, ECHL. He played a cup of coffee in the AHL, but mostly ECHL. No NHL games? No NHL games. Wow.
Starting point is 00:46:20 well i didn't even know he played professional at all yeah me neither prior to that um so i was i don't know i don't know um well and like he played with kekalainen and shovel day off and oh nice i didn't know any of these guys like what their uh careers were really it's it's one group of 200 guys it's one group of 200 guys but yeah we know that the hockey men but uh it you know doan's got a stellar nhl resume and i think i think that matters i think that matters um to maybe not everyone on the team but some guys and yeah the fact that he was basically matthew's childhood idol is yeah pretty mint and then to adam's point earlier about how much shane doan is liked and respected the reason when shane doan was leaving the coyotes and it was a big media
Starting point is 00:47:12 a deal that he this coyotes didn't really want him anymore and all that was because he was so well liked you know it became a story that he couldn't play anymore you know he wasn't up to par and the team made the on ice decision but it really hurt because he was so well liked in the organization amongst the fans and amongst the media i remember the end of his career was kind of tumultuous yeah that's the era i'm talking about yeah and i remember somebody uh i think you were on stage at some puck talks or something with myrtle and uh somebody else anyway lebron no it wasn't lebron but it was um anyway long story short uh you uh somebody asked james like how do you feel about the coyotes uh poor treatment of shane doan and you know how could they have
Starting point is 00:47:55 done it better and james in his very dry sort of uh way was like i don't know what the coyotes could have done differently he's not an nhl player anymore yeah but everybody was upset and looked like he was being treated so poorly because everybody liked him yeah what i will say is that i really like the fact that um he he is a very competitive person hayley wickenheiser is a very competitive person they're athletes they understand the grind of it all and um if you can fault the least for anything and this goes back far far before this generation just one thing well for any it's it's the it's the source sometimes a perceived lackadaisical approach and i'm not just talking about this core four i'm talking about pre the muskoka five and whoever else
Starting point is 00:48:42 that you've mentioned you know before day hat hat day known for being lazy pull up his bootstrap that's right conacher he just got back from the war and now he doesn't want to train come on hap um skates used to have bootstraps back and they did oh yeah yeah you had to wear suspenders no so all babe died didn't sharpen his own skin that's right that's right sprog cleghorn great oh yeah there should be a top 10 hockey names of all time though sprog and odi cleghorn yeah uh nikolai habibulin's got to be on that list what a great fucking name that's arlie zalapsky yep great jacob tutu is always one of my favorites love that one yeah also good jordan tutu who's real oh i'm sorry jacob tutu is the uh is the show isn't it oh yeah i think it is i
Starting point is 00:49:31 think that's the kid show i'm mixed with two well jesse's a big disney junior fan so you will be am i day if you if you have kids are you never really watching a lot of disney junior it's good programming well disney junior she's graduating out of now it's frozen and oh just so you know as soon as your kid watches frozen no other movie has ever existed before or since um sometimes you can break out frozen too but the original frozen for some reason that's obsessed that's the only movie ever and i know all the words now oh yeah yeah so i sing them in the kitchen and she gets mad at me uh because i'm terrible i got steve and his wife sl and leo tickets to disney on ice yes yeah you did that was the frozen one right it was except uh like you know afterward you quiz
Starting point is 00:50:18 your kid to see what they took away um and it was yeah the vast majority was like uh uh maui and yeah frozen and uh there was rapunzel in there or tangled um and we're like what'd you see leo he said i saw the crab of a little mermaid yeah and like i don't even i think we like got there late and missed the little mermaid part and sebastian was out there for so little of it he's like i saw the crab oh i'm like okay cool just like at the zoo what was your favorite animal uh goose elliot friedman has also reported that uh the leafs um have met with sheldon keep a couple of times and if he's back he will be signed to an extension and it looks like he will be back they're going to sign him to at least a one-year extension because if you have a lame duck coach
Starting point is 00:51:09 uh chances are your players can just tune them out if they don't like him sure seems like he's getting fired at some point eh i i feel the exact opposite of that yeah that's yeah i think i think honestly i think what's happened here is shanny really likes the system that the leafs had in place before i mean it is his system um he likes the fact that sheldon keith is the winningest head coach in leafs history by a winning percentage um does he like uh running it back with the same core and coach and expecting a different result yes he does cool and i think that's what they're gonna do um so i do think sheldon keith will be back and and i think that they'll sign him to at least a year extension and then perhaps more next year if he has some success we'll see um we
Starting point is 00:51:55 certainly will see as expected uh and i'm moving on here dude we don't want to do the other one well the other one i think is the more important quote which one the stuff i sent you yesterday bring it up i have no idea what you said yesterday uh the the core four no i have no idea so go ahead bring it up bring it up i got i have no idea what you're talking about okay what do you have there was there was reports yesterday uh from 32 thoughts that they want to um de-emphasize the core four yeah the people were upset about the core four uh there's so much attention on them so they want to go into next but they're not the only way to de-emphasize them is for them not to exist in their current iteration yeah that's all we're going to talk
Starting point is 00:52:34 about yeah i just the more sorry i'm jesse i'm just looking at it now i apologize so much happened yesterday a lot so my apologies i just hold it how did they say they want to de-emphasize it jess um i can play a little of it the report this is courtesy of sportsnet some 32 thoughts well you know the one thing i wanted to mention about this was i had a very interesting phone call with someone about all this stuff about you know who's signing for what and everything and and they said to me that they believe that one of the things that came out of this season was that the the toronto wanted to de-emphasize the core four what does that mean well that's a great question jeff and i'm going to answer it for you i'm sorry i interrupted not that the
Starting point is 00:53:23 organization feels anything negative towards those players but i think there was a feeling amongst like just the entire group like other players on the team some of the coaching staff the front office in the organization that there's too much about them too much about the core four and then i don't know what you call them the other 19 they felt it interfered in the growth of the team and one of the things i heard that was talked about was if you take a look at like the third and fourth line over the last few years there's been a lot of turnover and what someone indicated to me was the feeling was that they haven't done a good enough job as a group like everybody creating an identity for other players on the roster yeah but no those are the only players
Starting point is 00:54:19 that matter and that's the problem no they're not they're the difference maker that's that's the problem who have failed to make a difference yes but so then so then if you want to de-emphasize it the only way to do that because fans aren't stupid they'll look at cap friendly they know who the results are expected from how do you expect david kampf or alex kerfoot who did play in the top six or uh nicholas robertson if he cracks in how do you expect any of those guys matthew nyes who we expect to be a full nhl or next year um who else played on the bottoms in the bottom six um nola chari if he's back how do you expect them to eclipse the money and the stardom of the four guys that you're paying the most money to i don't i don't see how you de-emphasize that
Starting point is 00:55:07 if the nhl if the leafs are like okay well we're just not going to include all of them on the same uh poster that we post outside of scotia bank fine go ahead and do that but do you think the fans are going to stop buying their jerseys or stop referring to them as that because the media and the fans are not no i don't i don't think you're i don't think you're appreciating how how bad of a quote that is that that is listen there are camps uh within this team and within the core four they listen to everything and that quote's gonna go over like a wet fart okay so tell me why because it's gonna make them sound coddled it's gonna make them sound they are entitled listen you don't have to tell me
Starting point is 00:55:49 but it's it's gonna make them sound that way and uh it's i think it just puts more even more pressure on them like listen beyond the cap friendly conversation we were saying these guys hate seeing their friends leave and not just their friends friends who are good at hockey zach hyman morgan riley in vegas sorry henderson uh at the beginning of the season we were talking about the most, uh, underrated players in the league. Uh, everyone said Barkov, a couple of guys said to know Morgan Riley was brilliant because he comes in and he goes, and he's like, well, I'm sure everyone said Barkov. And I go, you're right. And he goes, so I'm going to go Zach Hyman. And I'm just like, well, damn Morgan Riley. And then Zach Hyman goes off for the best
Starting point is 00:56:34 year of his entire career. Ilya Mikheyev is another one of those guys. Michael Bunting has been an extremely useful player for the leafs on a ridiculously valued contract and guess what he's gone and you're gonna have to get a new one every year you got to do this again and again and again yes and how do you establish an identity when every year you're having to work in new guys well then you're gonna have to change the way you structure your your cap no fucking shit why why are we i don't understand why we're not screaming this from the rooftops that one of them has to go and i'm super not looking forward to it i'm not like like okay we know it's not going to be matthews it can't be tavaris so it's it's nylander and or marner
Starting point is 00:57:23 that's the beginning middle and end of this conversation if unless you're content with simply trying it again the same thing that hasn't worked for seven years unless you're content with simply trying it again that's what you have to do that's it it's not a particularly complicated conversation so so then from what i get from that quote though if i'm not mistaken i don't i don't hear anything in that quote that leads me to believe that the leafs are going to move on from this and we also know from cj on the cj show that was by the way nicely quoted by a whole bunch of outlets and then didn't credit the cj show oh he he just said it walking down the side yeah he just said it he just was like walking around you know you know guys and then a whole bunch of major
Starting point is 00:58:11 media outlets just happened to be there um but cj uh um cj said on the show that that shanny called all four of the guys and left them all with the impression that they're staying so how do you let me ask you guys this how do you de-emphasize the core four for the toronto maple leaves while keeping them because i think that's what's going to happen here or they're going to try because i here's what i think is going to happen with the lease they're keeping these guys together they're going to sign the matthews extension in the fall they're going to get willie under contract and then the cat the cap's going up five million bucks next year and that's what they're relying on that's what i think is going to happen there's a moment in red dead redemption
Starting point is 00:58:50 to where hosea looks at his good friend dutch vanderlyn and says you'll damn us all and he was right i just can't help but feel like sticking to this plan you'll damn us all jesse how do you feel about it yeah i think things change when you get new information and i think brad for living isn't beholden to what shanahan might have said a couple weeks ago or the conversations that he had with uh marner neilander tavars and matthews you know like they're things if bradger living comes in and he looks at the situation he says hey the best way to move forward is get rid of one of these pieces i can entirely see it happening and i don't and i don't see how you run it back with the same pieces and you expect a different result so i'm interested to see the conclusion that true
Starting point is 00:59:40 living draws from this as as he grows in the organization it's like okay he evaluates the talent he values the salary cap situation if he says the best way to move forward is to stick with this four this four core and then we try the same thing about we move pieces around but i'm going to get the different pieces on the chest on the chess board you know he might try that but he might also look at it now that he's in and he might say hey the best way to move forward is to de-emphasize the core four and move one out and then we have more room to work we have less emphasis on these just four guys and we can build a better team that way so i think it's entirely up in the air how they move forward here it's it's a moving target it's not hey they made it shanahan made
Starting point is 01:00:19 a decision a couple weeks ago to bring them all back and that's it no it's we're all evaluating here we'll see what comes up and everything's kind of on the table from here on out i am excited to sit down um and just dedicate some time to you know basically making like a like an investigation cork board trying to figure out who these guys like that listen hockey is very predictable uh at least in terms of off the ice shane doan is going to have someone from the coyotes organization he covets and wants to bring over brad for living is going to have someone from the flames who he covets and wants to bring over and if they bring in another assistant coach they're gonna have someone who they covet as well i'm sure shane down by the way was officially
Starting point is 01:01:11 announced a couple minutes ago as the special advisor to the general manager no press conference but a press release he has joined the toronto maple east front office there you go special advisor is what his title will be who is coming over it's all very interesting stuff man i don't know what they're gonna do adam it sounds like you're leaning on run it back they are running it back they're running it back do you think it's a good idea no does anyone no so why are they doing it well i think are we doing so why yeah why are they doing if it's not a great idea i think that they think it's a great idea because i think their argument is going to be okay if not then then who and i would answer that question with a question
Starting point is 01:01:57 of that's is that not your job and and and this is the this is the problem right people like well we couldn't make a trade we might not get a good player back well it's your job to make a trade and make sure you do they're gonna blue wedding one of these motherfuckers like look okay we're gonna get to them in a little bit here but look at what columbus has done in the last couple days the leafs have not had great defense the majority of this era last couple of years excluded they've had really good defense line yeah columbus is rebuilding their blue line they've been able to pull off proberoff uh and uh steverson was that right or was that right yeah they're not gonna be able to sign these guys they're gonna have to trade for them and way overpay yeah but i mean
Starting point is 01:02:38 they've they've they've added major pieces to their blue line what the toronto maple leaves i think a little bit need i think they need to be bold i think it's got a you know if if you're shanny if you're true living this can't be about job preservation it's got to be about you know because because the easiest you're good for minimum three years like yeah you're not getting fired yeah especially as a as a nhl gm in canada just you're here for a decade minimum do some shit yeah yeah i think i think that they are going to run it back because i think that they are into their process and and i don't think dubas was the only process driven person there i think they all are like this they're into their process so much they've staked so much on this how does
Starting point is 01:03:21 shannon go like honestly ask yourselves this how does brendan shanahan go to that uh that group of people uh that that mysterious faceless group of people we call the mlse board and say we're going to trade mitchell marner if i'm on that board i've been like i'd be like you just spent the last five years after that extension kicked in or whatever it was telling me that you can't trade any of those four guys what's changed well the results haven't been good but channy you told me they would be and they haven't been i agree so so who so we're already married to this guy yeah i've already decided the sun shines out of his ass and listen otherwise he'd be fine i want the sun to shine out of his ass i want them to win cups man i i'm i'm ready to to bask in the
Starting point is 01:04:09 sunshine firing right out of channy's cheeks i'm i'm in damn i mean what a visual just win a cup first win me a cup and then i will look all the sunshine you want jesse new t-shirt and i think i i think you guys are right though i think from like listen i i think you know cam sharon uh somebody who obviously worked within the organization he's a fascinating follow because he really represents at least to me publicly so much of what the inner workings were under the dubious regime whether you agree with them or not i think he's fascinating and i think he's got a really um uh defined set of here are my principles here's why i defend them and he can defend them and he does it regularly in the athletic i especially like what he has to say
Starting point is 01:04:52 about officiating and george perry yeah i love that i absolutely love that but i do want to say that i i think that you know there there has to be a deviation here eventually you can't rely on okay if the salary cap does go in fact go up four or five million dollars next season the that means you've gone through another season with this core um in theory kneelander and matthews are going up so that four million bucks that you're supposed to see at the end of this is it really worth that much more there's no way william kneelander is a toronto maple leaf in 24 25 right i mean i how does that work i think i think you have to if you want to keep him um you're looking at because marner's got two years left and you're looking at tavaris with
Starting point is 01:05:39 two years left and you're going willie can we somehow squeeze you in so that you're still here when when tavaris isn't that's what i would love you know you make that transition and maybe tavaris comes back but it's like very reduced or something but i don't know i really hope they can figure out that contract because it could be really rich if he has a like a 50 or another 40 goal season if we if they're relying on the cap to go up they've learned nothing that was the bet they made last time that was the bet they made last time and yeah it was a good bet it's a good bet that a once in a century pandemic won't happen again yeah uh in the next i don't know three years buddy it's you're it you're still leaving it to chance you're leaving it to the economy
Starting point is 01:06:33 the state of the planet and the whims of a guy who should have retired half a decade ago gary bevin yes you're just the whims like he's the one ownership throughout the league wants the cap to go up right and he's going hold hold and they just extended the dude he's less than a year into his five-year extension it ain't going up not by as much as people keep saying um so i'll believe it when i see it uh uh anyway i i think i think that it will be fascinating to see what happens here like i keep saying but it seems it sure feels like they're running it back it's It's always interesting for you mentioned inside baseball before when reports like this come out of the Maple Leafs organization because they're usually not a leaky ship. And it's always interesting when you hear insiders speak specifically to something like this that can be so damaging to the ears of people within the MLSC and the Leafs organization amongst the players and the management.
Starting point is 01:07:39 It's a very fascinating quote. You wonder who it came from, which sides, what's the motivation behind it. to for it to leak out and then get out there these things aren't small and i think there's a lot to look into and to see how it plays out sure sounds like the players it's coming it's coming from the players i you think so i think so too you think that came from a player oh yeah i think it came from multiple yeah really that's what it sounds like to me like and like i don't hear that i thought it'd be management that would say something like that maybe but i don't think i'm blowing up elliot spot by by saying that like well you're allowed to have an opinion on where
Starting point is 01:08:14 not like here steven we will we miss you and also here are my sources like i'm just it reads like it came from the players that that quote comes on the heels of ryan o'reilly on overdrive doing an interview with them talking about how he thinks the players could have done more in round number two versus florida that's that's a direct quote from ryan o'reilly speaking in the middle of of june and the stanley cup final being like hey we could have done more and that's a guy who is here temporarily who just gets like a peek into what the locker room of the leafs is and is just honest about it like he has no uh he's not beholden to this organization because he wasn't here before and also he's probably not coming back he's probably going back to st louis so that's somebody
Starting point is 01:08:59 who's speaking freely uh i actually these quotes are very interesting i i just bluetooth something to you you reminded me uh as maybe a distraction from this conversation that we need to wrap uh i was at hockey the other day and you weren't jerk yeah i don't play summer hockey yeah well i do poorly uh against people who are much better than me there's a one of the instructors repairs sticks for a living so put that up on the screen right there that is it's broken but that is ryan o'reilly's game use stick from game six against tampa oh wow this year cool so first of all there i keep talking about his freak show of a stick there it is in the flesh i got to hold it with that weird curve uh at the end but uh i believe what's going to happen there is uh
Starting point is 01:09:52 he's going to put the uh the blade back on uh repair it and then i think it goes to auction nice nice but he played with it he played with it that's very sweet ryan o'reilly played with that and uh the instructor brian brian game uh his his gloves that he uses are uh nicola obaku bells from when he was with the leafs yeah that's awesome yeah i gotta i gotta post those as well because like i don't know how many games could he have possibly worn those for i almost bought because at least always have their auction of uh their equipment at the end of the year i almost about jake muzzin's gloves because they they fit my hands because he has big hands too and i always need the the pro hand gloves because the the commercial grade doesn't fit my hands but he has
Starting point is 01:10:36 a giant uh shot blocking pad on the glove and i didn't want that yeah for for me who's playing the the lowest amateur hockey ever i didn't need this clunky thing on my hands although it would have been hilarious you just drop it down every time he tries to take a shot yeah i'm just like every steve shot sorry loser sorry loser sorry loser i just figured like it'd be weird to have this on my hand i wouldn't get used to it so decide against muzzin's gloves yeah i'm gonna be cool it'd be cool just buy them put them right here on the desk they'd be i imagine they'd be heavy yeah like it just seems like they seem like they'd be like you know like carrying around a couple of five pounders yeah you know just why not why not you're jake jacked you would get it'd be good for
Starting point is 01:11:20 your biceps for when you're dead in like a month is that is that how that works yeah i think so okay one month gestation period i like that one month i like that it is a great time to be a sports fan this is going to be a great and massive couple of weeks to come on the ice we have the vegas golden knights and the florida panthers in the stanley cup finals and over on the hard court we have the denver nuggets and the miami heat in the nba finals and you already know the sdpn will be all over both of those series for the hockey fans check out the steve dangle podcast and the chris johnston show we will have you covered and the game over crew will be back for post games for hoops check out s and lauren on the objective
Starting point is 01:12:07 basketball podcast watch full episodes on our youtube channel or listen on your favorite podcast app we are everywhere guys we're gonna play a little game now now that we've talked about the Leafs work it's called where in the world does Pierre-Luc Dubois not want to be playing for today yeah you've heard you played the game and watch the tv show where in the world is Carmen San Diego now it's where in the world is Pierre-Luc Dubois asking for a trade to I think the name needs workshopping we'll work on it uh he apparently has indicated there were rumblings whispers uh but they all came out yesterday that he is not willing to sign an extension in Winnipeg even for one more year uh according to pierre lebrun if the jets uh provide permission to pat
Starting point is 01:12:54 brisson to help broker a deal uh there could be a deal to be worked out where um the winnipeg jets are um are going to get a lot back right um well but if dubois says listen i'm only open to signing a long-term deal with the montreal canadians so any team that trades for him is getting him for one-year rfa uh then it kind of severely limits them no they're boned you think they're boned they're boned you think okay so you think montreal is his only because here's the thing if i'm if i'm kevin shovel day off and he says to me well montreal is the only place i'm gonna go then i will simply trade him somewhere else and let them figure it out that's not kind of the stance that's out there right now right now they're saying there's there's several other destinations that
Starting point is 01:13:37 he'd be willing to sign with la boston and new york yeah new york minnesota was also thrown out there but not necessarily long term and potentially detroit to minnesota's hilarious like montreal is one thing but like minnesota is i don't know probably up there with their most hated rival like it's the cross-border thing and everything a little toronto buffalo and cj was saying that it's not that this needs to happen right now they still own his rights as an rfa they can bring him back this season and make this trade throughout the year i cannot decide how i feel about this i cannot well on one hand this is the second team he's screwed screwed he screwed them screwed the blue jackets he's screwing the jets
Starting point is 01:14:22 um he screwed the blue jackets by not playing yep he did not play he didn't he didn't play at the standard of a professional hockey no he did certainly not an nhl player that's how he got traded he babied his way out and now here he is in winnipeg saying i'm just not going to resign there now the other side of the coin is it's his life oh yeah and he can play wherever he wants he can live wherever he wants but the problem is nhl players earlier in their career have so little agency like they have they have so little power to determine where they go um you know unless you're a college free agent or a college draftee which he is not um there's not a lot you can do uh to force the hand of the team that you're on so shouldn't i be cheering him on
Starting point is 01:15:24 yas king that you know he's controlling his own destiny in a way i don't know it kind of feels like i feel bad for blue jackets fans um and especially for jets fans especially the way that he he he ended his career with the blue jackets which was like objectively not trying at least the blue jackets got something for him yeah they did the jets aren't gonna get shit i don't think they're going to get much in the way of like i don't know picks like a middling prospect maybe they're not going to get linea and roslevic no right he's also not doing anything that's against the rules no like he's not willing he's not going to sit out the season if he's still on the jets and all that he's in rfa at the end of this and then his expiry when he's a ufa he's not going
Starting point is 01:16:14 to sign back with the team and he let them know and there's nothing against the rules nope he's just made his intentions very clear so that it's a conflicting kind of situation because yeah you can look at it and be like oh you don't want to sign there and you screw you but he's also not doing anything wrong so you can't really criticize him for not doing something wrong if you're a jets fan i totally yeah i'd hate him too yeah i'd be upset yeah i'd hate him too i'd be like wow you're making my hockey team worse i don't think that like legit that's what he's doing though yeah he's a good player and they're not going to get much for him that's making the team that i cheer for worse that sucks um but he's he's wielding his power in the only way that he knows
Starting point is 01:17:00 how wheelchair power king so do you high five player empowerment i mean kind of but also like fuck this is the second team he's done that too but you know you look at the the blue jacket situation and again like yeah dude i just don't want to play here anymore so trade me um okay you won't trade me so i'm just gonna dog it can't do that i didn't like that i didn't like it but be honest yo like let's be honest though yarmo who is notoriously brutal with his rfas had a part to play in the poisoning of that relationship probably and because because there was no other way to look at it torts lots of fun lots of fun to play for love and people love torts especially when the teams are bad um i think i think that there's a there's a part of
Starting point is 01:17:50 that but i also feel like listen um you got you got an agreement you have signed an agreement and the agreement is that by being an nhl player you have so many years until you can be an unrestricted free agent and you could try to force your trade to montreal now or or you know whatever it is that you want to do um but if i'm pierre luke dubois i i i and i know he tried to walk some of this back on twitch just after the draft last year because he was at the draft in montreal last year showed up with his agent the expectation was the deal that montreal was done and it got close it did get close he thought he was going to be dealt draft night and then he said on twitch no i did we know that he did well then why were you there yeah and i don't want to hear
Starting point is 01:18:34 i don't want to hear the nonsense about he didn't say it it was his agent his agent is speaking on behalf of who pays him who pays the agent like the agent is saying the things that pierre isn't saying so that he doesn't get in trouble listen and like i don't have any agents work i don't hold it against the agent like when the flurry sword thing happened i hammered alan and mark andre flurry basically saying well like alan that's your you're his client right or uh mark andre you're his client and you know it obviously didn't damage our relationship too poorly then we then we did a show with him did an entire podcast with him but yeah like your agent ideally argues for your wishes and if they don't they're not going to be your agent
Starting point is 01:19:20 for much longer exactly so pierre saying those things through his agent let's not get it twisted yeah and and listen i understand if if uh columbus wasn't your vibe or if winnipeg isn't your vibe although sure seems like a few a lot of places are not your vibe well it's two it's two places it's two two of two and no disrespect to these fan bases or these places it's two relatively unpopular destinations signing destinations man unless you're johnny gaudreau right unless you're johnny gaudreau you're right i think i think i i just i i there is it's a it's a split personality type topic right you just one side you're like man what the fuck like what's going on with you and then i almost said what the fuck guy what the fuck guy but then and the other side you're like
Starting point is 01:20:06 well he's a player and he's gonna use his power to go where he wants to go i get it and listen And who wouldn't want to play for the Montreal Canadiens? You're a young center. They need young centers. You're a former third overall, fourth overall pick. And you are going to go play for your hometown team? Yeah, I can understand why you want to be there as they're on the upswing. I get it.
Starting point is 01:20:23 I would want to be part of that. If I grew up in Quebec, grew up, I assume, cheering for the Montreal Canadiens. Hell yeah. I would want to be right on the way up. Imagine joining the Habs now. oh you didn't have to sit through those two years of dog shit yeah and you get to be there for the you get to join them on the crest oh yeah oh yeah so my question to you guys would then be like if um if he gets traded to a team that he will not sign an extension with can you get him cheap
Starting point is 01:20:55 and is that fine for one run there's a there's teams out there that that love doing this kind of stuff i look at a team like carolina i think carolina would be a one-year swing on pld like and like maybe even they think like hey we can convince them if we get them in this organization but even if it's a one-year hey we'll just have this run with yeah that's a great destination for them at this price like if they're paying nothing carolina seems like an awesome destination it's a beautiful place to live and like one one year pld and you get some more offense and no winter lovely come in a cup and then go home right i also want to throw this out there okay You know who might be looking for a center?
Starting point is 01:21:33 No, it's not happening, Adam. It's not happening. You know. It's a neat idea. I don't need to say it, but you know. You get a young, skilled center, Toronto Maple Leafs. They will be looking at a center this offseason. And one that can push Tavares to the side.
Starting point is 01:21:52 They will. Is this the hockey sweater in real life? What do you mean? Like, he just, he was traded to the Leafs, And he says, I will never wear that uniform. Just like in the book slash cartoon. I mean, okay. Everyone, I like to think about hockey romantically.
Starting point is 01:22:12 We talk about how it's a business, it's a business. But this is a guy fighting to go to Quebec, right? He's fighting to join the Montreal Canadiens. And for all the reasons we outlined, it's perfectly understandable. Why does he want to come here to Toronto? if your aspiration is to play for the montreal canadians it's what you're fighting for you're willing to change homes several times over to get it accomplished why are you coming to toronto pld has no say over where the winnipeg jets trade him to that is true but why is he coming to
Starting point is 01:22:49 toronto because kevin shovel they have made a trade with them but the red flag in pld is if we as evidenced by what we've seen if he doesn't want to be uh on your team he just won't play he'll play he just won't try it's and like the jets i mean on one hand they got a player who did pretty decently for them yep for a time but on the other hand they gave up two really good players for a dude who they knew may not resign and now they're not going to get much form dubois had 27 goals and 36 assists last season in 73 games. He's a good player. The year before
Starting point is 01:23:30 with the Jets, he had 28 goals and 32 assists for 60 points in 81 games. That is a perfect second line center. And that's, honestly, if you can get him cheap and you're like, we just need him for a year. And he's a son of a bitch in the playoffs. Yeah. Yeah, he
Starting point is 01:23:45 showed up. Yeah. Showed up in their brief stint in the playoffs. Well, I mean, the Jets didn't do so good, but he hammered the Leafs. I remember from the bubble to alienated teams ago. He's a fascinating guy. Fascinating guy. I don't think NHL owners are excited for a player to control their destiny this much
Starting point is 01:24:09 and then go somewhere and have success. Like, imagine he goes to Montreal and they do great and maybe even win. And now every RFA, every player under 25 is going to be like, oh, I'll just force my way out. well i mean maybe they should a little bit more some of them should some of them should fight for more i i'm ready for people for players to make as close to market value as they can maybe the rfa rules are kind of ridiculous they are maybe it you shouldn't wait till you're 25 26 to become a free agent maybe that's maybe that's a little much nhl hunting was a what is it uh
Starting point is 01:24:44 something six a category six uh free agent which is just i want to say he was a rfa who wasn't qualified or something like that or or he played a certain amount of games like samsonov group six group six sorry you're looking for samsonov is i believe 25 you want me to read he's a restricted free agent yeah sorry group six uh ufa this from cap friendly the greatest website on planet earth A player whose contract is expiring and meets all of the following conditions will become a UFA. The player is 25 years old or older. The player has completed three or more professional seasons. The player has played less than 80 NHL games or 28 NHL games of 30 minutes or greater for a goaltender.
Starting point is 01:25:33 Pending group six free agent is agent provocateur guest Boca Wee Mama. Oh. oh yeah i i don't know i saw that on twitter you go um uh so there's that and then there's another player along the same lines as pierre luke who bought alex to brin cat we've mentioned him a couple of times um he is not likely to sign an extension in ottawa and this goes into uh some other news that dropped today the the senator's ownership race i'm going to keep it on to brin cat for the first little bit and then we're going to talk about steve apostolopoulos dropping out as a potential buyer for the Ottawa
Starting point is 01:26:11 Senators. Nick Kiprios as well. Nick Kiprios? That's his good friend. Yeah, okay. He did consulting for I'm not even going to try to say his name. Can you say it for me again? Apostolopoulos. Apostolopoulos. He did consulting for him, so the joke's been that Nick Kiprios is going to be
Starting point is 01:26:26 president of the Senators if he signs the team. He was going to change it to the Little Buddha Center. For those of you who don't know, that is nick kiprios's drink i like that they would all like that percent at least have the board ads and i'd go so far as to say maybe the jersey patch so i have a question that's out the window i have a question about that by the way uh what with okay so why doesn't he advertise on our show yeah that's a good question right right what the hell he doesn't hate it the next time we have him
Starting point is 01:27:04 on the show because Nick's given us some of the best like he's when you get Nick Kiprios in a mood telling stories, it's the best. His stories are incredible and really quiet though. Really? Yeah, really quiet. Let me tell you about something very
Starting point is 01:27:20 greekly. Let me put my full Mediterranean is into this. We should write that down for August story time with Kipper. I would love another story time with Kipper. I love right around taste to the danforth exactly exactly hey nick you'll be in the area right ask him about some hummus
Starting point is 01:27:41 yeah no he's so so nick is a uh ziki sorry yeah you got it get that freaking right man sorry um this is dangerous game jesse sorry what was i gonna say i'm not gonna work oh okay so he's greek we yeah i know but i keep throwing me off the thing that i want to add to bring it play now Oh, I forgot what I'm going to say. The ownership, Montreal. There's something I got to ask Kipper. Oh. And I've been meaning to ask this question, and I can't.
Starting point is 01:28:08 I had it, and then you went on your side, and then I lost it. But it's a really good fucking question for Kipper. I don't think it was. Whatever. Let's talk about Jabrin Kat. The reality is that the ownership situation is still up in the air. Should it be? No.
Starting point is 01:28:22 Usually when you see an ownership situation unfold in another major sport, You look at the Washington Commanders being sold relatively quickly. You look at the NBA when the Clippers were forced sold because of Donald Sterling. And I think there was another recent purchase of an NBA franchise. Phoenix Sun. That's right. And that happened very quickly because Robert Sarver was kicked out for the same reasons that Donald Sterling was kicked out. Similar.
Starting point is 01:28:47 Similar. Different. Vista Viano was involved in this one. Yeah. In her visor hat. Is that right? Do you remember Vista Viano? I do remember Vista Viano and her rollerblades.
Starting point is 01:28:56 she's the one who exposed the whole thing yeah she played with her rollerblades yeah what the the robert sterling's girlfriend woman on the side easily 60 years his junior um was the one that took his his his voicemails and put him on the internet oh oh oh man that was v steviano i can't believe you remember that name jess the visor i just remember the visor what is that it's it's kanye before kanye harder better um anyway stronger so that's another side the nhl as it's known to do is taking its fucking time with this leadership race and several really legitimate groups have um dropped out of the senators uh the senators race here and here's the thing alex de brin cat's looking at that and going i don't know what this next group's
Starting point is 01:29:47 going to want or value or desire i can't re-sign here and seemed like he was that stoked on signing there anyway no it didn't uh the the ottawa senators gave up the number seventh overall pick to get to brin cat which again i think they'd make that move again every single time uh he didn't have a great year but he still had 25 goals that's not bad like you have no guarantees a seventh overall pick's gonna get you that uh now he didn't have patrick kane to play with uh And it didn't help that Norris went down early with that injury that should have cost him the year it didn't. It wasn't a high-powered offense, and he comes off scoring 40 goals,
Starting point is 01:30:22 and you drop down to that. You understand why, but it's a little disappointing. It is disappointing. And he doesn't drive lines, right? He doesn't drive the line. Well, apparently not. He is – the Senators are not going to be able to recoup what they paid for this play.
Starting point is 01:30:35 Yeah. A first-round pick, the number seven overall last year. Second round, the number 39 overall, which is on the cusp of the first round and then another third round pick in 2024 for de brin kit even if they get a first second and third for him they're not getting number seven number 39 yeah that's oh boy that's tough and it was supposed to be a long-term play you know you get him and okay you're disappointed in the what was it 27 goals he puts up less than 30 but it's That's not you're not about the one year build here in Ottawa.
Starting point is 01:31:11 You're like, OK, we're going to have to bring it for the next seven years of his career because we're going to sign him long term. And eventually he'll have four 40 goal seasons in there. And then you get a trade request less than a year later. I don't think it's good enough to recoup futures for him. Like you need a player who can play now. Yeah. Like a good one. Yep.
Starting point is 01:31:30 I get that. I think you're right. If you're able to, you know, get a decent roster player and some futures, that could be a good trade. yeah i don't know i don't know but again is he an rfa oh no it's the qualifying offer right is because isn't his qualifying offer like nine million that's timo meyer i don't know what to bring no his is bad too is it yeah it's not a great situation for us so this is this is the thing though like um and this is where i want to mold this conversation is nine i want to i want to mold this conversation into the senators leadership organization steve apostolopoulos
Starting point is 01:32:09 who also put in a gigantic bid uh over six billion for the washington commanders in the nfl didn't ultimately win it but but the fact that he could put a six million dollar deal to get or six billion dollar deal together i think it's pretty major um and here's what bruce garyock in the ottawa sen wrote presumptive top bidder for ottawa senators walks away in frustration there are whispers already that many people are frustrated with the way the nhl's handled this the remington group which ryan uh ryan reynolds ultimately chose to be a part of was the first group to say yeah no thanks uh we're not going to be a part of this process it doesn't help us um apostolopoulos apparently had a a bid of somewhere in the neighborhood of a billion
Starting point is 01:32:55 dollars uh but with the remington group out and with apostolopoulos out uh it seems like the senators are going to sell for less money uh they're going to sell for 900 million or potentially 800 million uh one of the minority owners of the montreal canadians and lauer uh he says that he wants to buy the senators really badly but he's his bids between 800 and 900 million dollars and he's not moving and the other issue is that he is trying to uh sell his 10 percent share in the montreal canadians not having a heck of a lot of luck but the what seems to be happening is the nhl seems to favor one bidder here and they're waiting for them to get their shit together and potentially raise their money and it seems like it's an lauer oh okay it's what
Starting point is 01:33:40 it seems like and and so if i was if i was eugene melnick's kids i'd be like hey uh fuck you man i want the billion with a b no the the nhl going with the the devil they know you don't say yeah Yeah, I get that. Always in every situation ever. We wonder why there's 200 guys. You know, I wonder if Gary and Ann Lauer, Michael Ann Lauer is his name, would probably have a relationship already. And he was probably, well, what probably happened was Michael Ann Lauer said, you know, I'll buy into the Canadians. But just so you know, I want my own franchise and I've already invested in your league.
Starting point is 01:34:18 So I, therefore, should be next. Right. But that's not how it should work in life, which is it should go to the highest bidder. Necco Sparks, by the way, who is a part of the Snoop Dogg bid, submitted a pitch. Jeffrey and Michael Kamel of Harlow Capital as well. But apparently, Necco Sparks has issues with actually getting the full financing. He doesn't have the money. And I don't know about the Kamel, Jeffrey and Michael Kamel of Harlow Capital.
Starting point is 01:34:45 I'm not sure where they stand. But either way, this process has taken way too long. um you should have had this wrapped up in march uh because you could have just say here's the price who's willing to meet it and then pick the bid that works the best for you and then go from there and and there's no reason for this to take this long but the nhl loves to drag this shit out and there are real life consequences the ottawa senators are on the upswing they did have a much better year despite the fact that they lost josh norris but one of the major pieces of what is supposed to be their core going forward is now going i still don't know who the fuck the owner
Starting point is 01:35:18 is why why would i sign here and and honestly what if the owner comes in and is is melnick part two in terms of spendthrift right doesn't want to spend just get me to the first round so i can get a couple home dates in the playoffs and by the way the audible senators under melnick did a lot better than that but you know if that's the type of owner that walks in the door here then de brin cat is then tying himself to a franchise that hasn't had a lot of success lately and and he has no guarantees that they will going forward what gm in the nhl has had a harder job than pierre dorian man think about what he's had to deal with well there's what he had to deal with with eugene melnick and then there's he's trying to rebuild and build
Starting point is 01:36:00 with zero certainty of anything and it's it's it's pulling teeth getting like talented ufas in the first place yeah to sign anywhere well he also had to deal with pierre mcguire too oh my god that was like mutual they were he wasn't his boss but it was it was very strange and uh you know now you have no ownership certainty how much are you allowed to spend it man who's had a harder gig it's a tough gig and he can't be one of the highest paid gms no no i i just feel like i do i look at this situation and i think um you know whoever comes in here is probably going to want to spend some serious money and make the team great and get the new arena done and all that sort of thing. I hope for all of that. I'm sure that's what the NHL
Starting point is 01:36:50 wants. But either have the money or you don't. You either want to be here or you don't. So eliminate the guys that don't have the money right now. Sorry, Nico Sparks and anybody else that doesn't have the financing. You're not ready yet. So the next time a franchise comes up, call us. But for now, you're not ready yet. So who are the people that have the money? Who's willing to bid the most i don't see how it's much harder than that elon you can buy the league names at the twitter center gary gary wants somebody that he likes and that the other owners approve into the club you know it's a very exclusive club of 32 guys and and he's only allowing the next owner to be somebody that is also on board with the club so and if that person isn't the highest
Starting point is 01:37:38 bidder there comes a lot of feedback from the people who are trying to make the most amount of money and arguing with gary so this is a process that should be fairly simple and it's a shame it's gotten to this point because buying a franchise is something that's so valued right now in north american pro sports every billionaire wants this wants a pro sports franchise right now whether it's it doesn't have to be the north american ones you look at uh what ryan reynolds is doing with rexum like everybody wants these toys because they are money making machines they're one of the only entertainment products that is just doubled and tripled and quadrupled in value over the last decade and it's only going up and the projections for these franchises values that
Starting point is 01:38:20 they're just going to go through the roof as well so all these billionaires want it and it should be an easy sale but it's a shame for senators fans because with the passing of eugene and then the subsequent sale of the franchise you thought you would turn the page on this era of the senators where things are a mess but out of this you've gotten more of the same which is such a shame because it should be an easy process but all they're getting is more of this just confusion and turmoil that the senators franchise has been for the last 20 years and since fans deserve similarity so much better and whether it's with the arena whether it's with upper management when it's the owner it seems like they can never catch a break and just get a smooth transition
Starting point is 01:39:03 and we all thought this would be it there's gonna be the end of it by here but the other thing is sorry go ahead well i was gonna say there's reason to believe they'll come out of this better for it yes but it's oh they will still not there i also want to throw out there that i think that i believe that they've put um they had the opportunity to grab ryan reynolds with all of his marketing ability right and uh had an opportunity to you know have a show on disney plus about the ottawa senators and all the other things that would have happened right and the negotiations to buy this team were such a shit show that all of these people who wanted this team have just backed out well but and they're retracting their billion dollars beyond that though jesse the nhl wanted
Starting point is 01:39:46 ryan reynolds to not attach himself to anybody what they said to him was we'll put you on the winning bit we want you as a part of this but we'll put you with the group that's the winning bit and ryan reynolds as a smart business person said what if i don't like them yes that we went with the group that he liked again the nhl the way the nhl runs itself is not how the world runs itself and the day they figure that out is the day they might yep you're watching a lot of smart business people say i don't want to do business with these guys yeah yeah that's that's this league and that's such a shame resign for the love of god resign yeah well not gonna happen so uh we'll see what happens but if that sale price isn't over a billion dollars i think
Starting point is 01:40:29 i think there's gonna have to be some questions answered and again i wonder how much of this the nhl actually controls because if i'm the melnick family they own the asset how much of it is them i don't know how this works so i really don't know great question yeah no there's a part of this is yeah we should talk to cj about it there's a part of this is the the trust is trying to recoup as much money as they can you know sure and they don't they would don't want to probably go with gary's guy because there's somebody else who's willing to offer a couple hundred million more yeah because if i'm if i'm eugene melnick's daughters and i'm the trust you know i'm one of the trustees of that uh the last thing i give a shit about is gary's previous um relationships
Starting point is 01:41:06 you know gary is trying to do a solid by somebody who has who has been a part owner in the nhl for years you can't own both teams so you got to sell your portion of the canadians and you got to buy the senators that's what they want that's what it seems they want so if that's the case um if i'm eugene amelick's daughters i'm like fuck off man i don't fucking care yeah so i don't care you're gonna cost me 100 million dollars because you owe that guy a favor boohoo tell him to step up and pay the price and then now you see why this is taking a long time you know what jesse i think that's exactly what's happening i have no proof i have no insider knowledge but let me tell you this that is what's happening they're like we're not letting it go for this and this guy and lauer
Starting point is 01:41:47 who is who's come in who appears to be the favorite is not willing to worth pay more than probably 850 million dollars if i'm guessing and by the way that's what the fucking franchise is worth probably nine nine five it's it's it's worth about that and people paying over a billion dollars knew they were overpaying because they were in a multiple bid situation but if you keep dropping bidders you're not in a multiple bid situation you lose all that leverage i i don't know they make it sound like this was like weeks away like a couple weeks ago every there's a joke amongst the ottawa writers that every week this is the week yeah and every week it's not the week man the bruno caboclo of sales two weeks away from being two weeks away it must
Starting point is 01:42:32 be so boring to repeatedly like if you're a hockey writer you want to write about hockey yes trades contracts play on the ice whatever you don't want to talk about ownership boo boring um dude this is a very fitting moment to do the sdp retro merch if you want you want to do it there because yeah slip it in today's merch that's coming back oh jesse out of the vault no way is it i'm excited you're excited mark borieski's excited the fans are excited the sponsors are excited maddie bring it back there it is on the screen right now the i'm excited you're excited mark's excited t-shirt where there's a recycling loader and a dumpster fire so uh back in 2018 i want to say eugene melnick uh very famously did a interview with
Starting point is 01:43:26 mark borieski as the interviewer as the interviewer and and he's always put an owner interviews i forget why they decided to do the interview no no it was boreatsky interviewing him oh yeah right so they did it because they had gotten a lot of bad press yeah and i think it had to do with hoffman and eric carlson if i'm not mistaken oh man there have been so many damn stories who even knows and they were trying to say oh no the team's actually good yeah and i'm excited and the fans are excited yeah sponsors are excited so uh we had debuted that interview on tim and sid that afternoon and then i brought it to the show that night when we recorded and it became a full meme and then we got merch out of it and all that so we brought it back
Starting point is 01:44:09 and i wanted to read one story oh go ahead oh i was gonna say wasn't that right around the front foot it was right it was it was that same same year we had uh we had had uh the front foot meme i want to read one story from our discord about somebody who's uh yelling for us to bring this back because it was one of their favorite t-shirts jeez uh ava kale is their name on discord um i see a lot of things i want to buy bookmark and then forget about and when the shirt was released it was one of those things i'm australian so nobody is going to get the reference down here but this shirt is neat because the joke works with with it without it if someone asks what it means you just cycle through i'm excited you're excited etc endlessly and if they ask about the
Starting point is 01:44:54 flaming dumpster, you say that's not relevant and get right back on the message. Somewhere in late 2021, you said on the podcast that you were pulling it off the store. Yeah, because we had switched stores around that time. So I grabbed one that day and had sent it here. Getting things to Australia from North America takes forever. And a couple of times during COVID, a parcel post in Australia from North America was completely shut down because of Aussie Post couldn't handle the quantity. About a month after I bought the shirt, I was given notice that I had to leave my unit because the landlord needed it for themselves i found something else and moved about four weeks later i managed to redirect all my mail but that shirt which didn't show up in
Starting point is 01:45:30 time i figured was lost what had actually happened was the landlord found it and decided to just mark it as a return to sender so it spent another month or two going all the way back to wherever in the usa um uh teespring i guess who we used that time a red bubble or whoever was doing the the shirts for us uh sent it from and somewhere in late january i got the message saying that i've had a parcel returned and they are very graciously told me i could have it redelivered somewhere else for free i had it sent to my parents and the shirt finally arrived in late march oh my as you can see probably where this is going i collected it from my parents house went home and went to bed and woke up the next day and yuji melnick passed away oh my god
Starting point is 01:46:12 fortunately nobody down here knows who that is so it's not really in bad taste and i wore plenty anyways jesus wow that was a long story about this shirt we're bringing it back long i love that isn't that crazy now remember this goes to the get real movement um along with all of our other uh you know pride throwbacks um and we continue to raise money for them because they're it's a fantastic cause and you can find out more information at sdpn.ca but uh that's our part of our private jesse well done on the uh on the retro tarot yeah it does go back and show you how bad our merch was you don't love the recycling dumpster bin that we made in 2018 is gonna wear that what i said who the fuck is gonna wear that people i know they do people wear it's kale
Starting point is 01:46:57 it's true it's true adam um hey way to sell the merch the salary cap is something that drives steve bonkers but how about we we discuss the salary cap from the perspective of somebody who uh has nothing to gain by going up or going down uh that would be joe smith of the athletic former lightning reporter now with the wild uh oh joe put out an article about how the nhl salary cap could still increase this year but i thought it was interesting if it doesn't here's what it probably looks like now there is a memorandum of understanding he said in the current collective bargaining agreement that dictates the cap can only go up five percent in any one year so if it goes up a million dollars for next season then in 23 24 conceivably uh that would be next season
Starting point is 01:47:43 it's 83 and a half the following year it's 87.7 the next year it's 91.2 and he's like that doesn't quite reach the 10 to 12 uh million dollar over three year estimate that a lot of people are talking about um but i thought this part was the most fascinating so gary betman said there were quote beans to be counted the estimates are that right now uh the nhl players over covid who owed the nhl over a billion dollars in escrow payments because they chose to take their money um have essentially paid it off because revenues have been so strong and it's somewhere between 50 and 70 million that's left to go but that that essentially you just said is carrying a lot of weight it's about 50 million dollars yeah now here's what's fascinating um how they how they
Starting point is 01:48:32 bring this up and how they talk about this is it's called HRR, Hockey Related Revenue. So revenue that came in and the players and the owners, they split that 50-50, right? I didn't know this, but Marty Walsh, who is the head of the NHLPA said, they're still calculating revenue from 2019-20 and 2020-2021. So it is conceivable, he wrote, Or he said, he said, sorry, one agent said to Joe Smith, you can make a hypothetical argument that by October, when the puck drops on this season, the escrow debt will be completely paid off. So they, Gary is pushing back on his owners and pushing back on the PA for a debt that might not even exist because they're not done calculating it. Yeah, no, you're you're not going to you're not going to get me to get excited about this. You're just not.
Starting point is 01:49:29 Listen, I'm a Leaf fan. I have too many mental defense mechanisms. I will not let my hopes get up. I don't think it's going up this year, but I'm just saying it's hilarious to think that it wouldn't go up because of the perceived escrow debt that doesn't exist. No, I know. Bad commissioner. Bad at his job. Uh, also, uh, in it, and it was, it's talking about the Gavrikov deal, which was signed during
Starting point is 01:49:50 our last show, actually part of the Cal Peterson, you know, three-way trade with Provorov was so that they could clear salary to sign Gavrikov. And obviously ostensibly, I would think Korpisalo as well in LA. Gavrikov refused a three or a four-year deal, which was LA's preference. He chose to do two years because, um, as Dan Milstein publicly said, uh, Vlad is betting on himself he's going to be 29 when this deal is up he can go back to market then and the salary cap is going up over the next few years and it's conceivable that it's up five to seven million dollars minimum by the time he's a free agent again yeah i'm certainly not going to hate on the guy for betting on himself i just did the same um but it's risky there's uh like i'm probably
Starting point is 01:50:33 not going to blow out my knee in this line of work and if i do i'm still going to be okay yeah he needs his knees he does and uh you just never know it's a risk it is a risk but i think he might be totally healthy and just not as good yeah i just think fascinating oh it's it is fascinating and i think you're gonna see some really confusing seeing that i i'm my bet is matthew's deal is two to three years oh talk about making toronto mad dude fans will blow a gas that's my bet and i won't be mad about it i won't even be mad about it that doesn't mean your deal three-year deal i won't be mad you two years why would i be mad about that the guy's making his money let him make his money no as a leafs fan let him make it as a leafs fan you wouldn't be upset because i
Starting point is 01:51:22 wrong with you first off if you keep the deal shorter the the aav is down gavrikov could have made more money per year if he'd signed a longer term deal right if you're if you're buying those of how it's supposed to work it is the opposite of how it's supposed to work but if you're talking about an accelerated cap situation then the player is going to say i'm going to lose money on the other side of this so you got to pay me more severson got a fuck load of money he sure did holy we'll get to severson next but i i i just want to throw this out there like i are you i don't think you should be surprised the nba there are guys that are signing one-year contracts all the time like lebron did it for a few years and i think they'd have or they'd sign a three-year
Starting point is 01:52:01 deal with an opt-out each year but their cap isn't hard or triple hard dude like this was um during the marner thing i was like oh my god i want him to take less i want him to take less and people are like why are you rooting against this player um and rooting in favor of the billion dollar corporation it's not like i'm going yeah leaf save money like dude you want them to win i cheer for yeah it's a competitive edge i want them to win if he takes less it's more likely they win well what is difficult about this i'm sorry well maybe that's the way to keep them the the aav down and get some more players around if matthew signs 15 if matthew signs a two-year deal you sell the franchise that's ridiculous what about a three could you do a three i could do a two is a two
Starting point is 01:52:53 is a little sign a fucking seven year deal stick around i don't think that's gonna happen guys you know i think you're dreaming ilya samsonov gives great quotes and he's my favorite i hope he gets 10 million a year just give every player whatever they want and everything's fine that's how you run a successful business damon severson what are we doing damon how do i even have to justify this fucking stance uh david severson is joining the columbus blue jackets in a sign trade deal this according to sports no sdpn sports is chris johnston signed a trade with the new jersey devils and columbus blue jackets he agreed to the eight year contract here is how it breaks down according to puckpedia eight year deal 6.25 million dollar
Starting point is 01:53:40 cap hit each year uh six million dollar salary this year with a two million dollar signing bonus um that's year one and two uh year three is five and a half uh with a two million dollar signing bonus you're four four point one with a two million dollar signing bonus it's a lot of bonus uh you're five three point three million with a 1.8 million dollar bonus and you're six four point one with a million dollar signing bonus you're seven eight five point one million flat on the cap no signing bonuses so this deal is not front loaded not easy for them to extricate themselves out of he also has a no trade deal in his no trade clause in his first uh four years year five is a 20 team no trade list and year six is a 12 team no trade list as well yeah they're
Starting point is 01:54:23 not trying to trade them they're not trying to make this friendly the trade what columbus is trying to do here is lock them in and throw them in a cage so that you can't go anywhere but columbus you're stuck here yeah i mean what a change team from a couple days hugely changed they added a whole pair yeah and like you could you could argue okay well it's you know they're maybe getting top pair money and they're only a second pair sort of thing looking at uh well proverov is going to play beneath warensky but severson is automatically their top right hand defenseman and he's going to play with the future norse trophy winner david you're a check that's right well and then so i wondered about that because your check has been tearing it up and
Starting point is 01:55:05 and a lot of the um a lot of the projections like if you were to redraft last year he would have gone higher and i'm wondering he went fifth yeah yeah that's the funny thing so i'm wondering about stop taking shots of shane right uh i'm wondering about columbus and i'm wondering about adam bolquist uh because he was a former i think he's like an eighth or ninth overall guy he was a high pick i saw kevin pipetti like he's got he's got term and money left um and like columbus needs to spend but they don't need to but they and they also need to have your check come in and push him out but once he does you wonder if that's a move that they make so we're looking at what do we got warrenski proverov there you go uh warrenski severson proverov peak good branson boquist
Starting point is 01:55:50 probably good branson oh man i forgot about eric good branson yeah so i mean they're a change team i don't know if they're a great team they're certainly an improved team uh they're harder to play against like a branson deal yeah bad yeah they're gonna be able to move the puck i mean this is good news for all of columbus's forwards i mean that's one way to make your forwards a little better yeah is get guys who can give them the puck right we always forget that in in the conversation um when teams are depleted on d uh we're like oh yeah they're gonna allow a lot of goals yeah they're also not gonna be able to fucking score them because you gotta get the puck up you know cadro can't do everything so uh i think they're gonna be much better they're doing exactly what
Starting point is 01:56:34 i said they were going to have to do right they're going to have to trade guys they're going to have to spend a lot of money and they're probably not going to be able to get ufas um i mean severson was a pending ufa but they're not creative they got several weeks ahead of it they agreed to give him eight years like even an unrestricted free agency i don't know if he's getting eight like who else is giving him eight oh i don't know this is damon well you can't get you can't get and free agency like he's can't get it fine i don't think he's bad he's fine like this this is a the sort of contract usually reserved for top top guys he's gonna be maybe the top right handed guy in columbus for the time being league wide ah it's not a top guy okay but he's getting
Starting point is 01:57:30 paid like it well i think we talked about this earlier sometimes you gotta overpay i guess yeah and i don't i don't hate the deal as the cap goes 6.2 is gonna look a lot 6.2 is gonna look a lot better in three years oh yeah that's not that's not bad at all even when i see it i also yeah for what's the second pair defenseman make right now four four to six right yeah four five so he's making the top end of that with the salary cap due to go up like 10 in the next year sure and There's nothing wrong with that deal. The thing with the Gabranson signing, which was not good, was the motivation behind it was that the Columbus Blue Jackets lacked pushback.
Starting point is 01:58:05 So they went out and got Gabranson. And with these deals, these are the better ones where you're trying to get the bigger guys and the guys who can actually compete out there because their forward group is a small one. They don't have a lot of guys who can play in the corners. Their defense didn't have that pushback, and that's why they got Gabranson.
Starting point is 01:58:20 And then you got Provo, Rob, and Severson. I like what they're doing. They're trying to play a different style of hockey, getting mike babcock in there so we'll see if it has any type of result style with talent right we'll see if it has any kind of results i i don't know but you can't that's decent moves i mean you gotta be i think the the expectation for this upcoming season should be watchable yeah you know what i mean like you don't even need to necessarily make the playoffs or even look like you might who's gonna be more watchable the columbus blue jackets or the anaheim dust
Starting point is 01:58:54 columbus in a walk columbus in a walk although fantelli going to the ducks probably yes um is going to be exciting all right new survey what is more watchable the anaheim ducks or leo playing little tyke soccer leo playing little tyke soccer he's a legend is he a legend yeah he scored a goal while holding a snack cup and he put it down on the grass to clap for himself. Oh, I like that. It's the best.
Starting point is 01:59:30 I like the self-confidence. Get it, Kate. He tried banging the friggin snack cup together and then he just put it down on the grass and then went because he kicked the ball into a tiny, tiny net with his very long shorts. What was the goalie doing? How did the goalie allow that?
Starting point is 01:59:46 There was no goalie. He's two. Okay. There's no goalie. there was no goalie he's too all right well yeah put that on instead of the ducks oh absolutely absolutely the joys the joy of a toddler discovering sports or the anaheim ducks that is a 100 out of 100 choice jesse i don't know they got zegras all right 99 and fantilly you'd think yeah soon yeah uh ryan huska leading candidate by the way fantilly said uh he's still not decided on whether or not he's going back to college so even if he gets drafted he may not i mean it's not going to make the ducks better like
Starting point is 02:00:29 no effect out of fantilly but he can't change the fortune there maybe he should say to them i'm not coming until you make a better team thank you bye but give me some more people and you got your whole career to play professional hockey like yeah you only got one more shot at college hockey it's a it's a really it's a tantalizing route you get to control so much of your life you're preparing yourself for afterhawk yeah uh ryan huska leading candidate for the flames uh head coaching job he's 47 years old he's been an assistant with the flames for the last five years under a couple different coaches um previously he was the flames ahl coach and also coach the colonel rockets a lot of people thought it would be calgary wranglers coach
Starting point is 02:01:07 mitch love contracts not done but uh both free gen cj were reporting it yesterday what happened to gerard galant i don't know i guess he just he wasn't the guy it's i guess they wanted a guy longer than two years these things change very quickly eh oh yeah it just feels like it feels like everything i've said this several times over the last few years it just feels like everything in hockey and maybe in other aspects of life but we pay the most attention to hockey everything is moving at a faster pace and people are making more like uh abrupt and uh life-changing decisions um because they're like well fuck you never know when you're gonna get locked inside for two years yeah yeah 100 so we're going with you we're going with you ah fuck it we're gonna go with this guy
Starting point is 02:01:57 unless you know the toronto maple leafs and you're hiring brad for living then you have one guy and that's your guy the whole time and you only talk to that guy no they talk to they talk to really qualified guy mark bergman over zoom gary who do i want funny thing about shane doan uh post phoenix coyotes um got his career in management start in the nhl offices isn't that funny i don't know it's just it's just something that happens with a lot of guys in the nhl you ever just think it's funny how i do these guys who move up real quick all got this start somewhere maybe because uh there does that mean he worked with george paris i don't know which department i gotta look it up again or re-sign but there is a q a right now with shane and shane doan and and he just
Starting point is 02:02:46 told the story apparently matthew nye's dropped by shane matthew nye's of arizona yes uh dropped by shane doan's house yesterday and gave him a maple leaf sweater with the number 23 on it I think that's Matt Nye's number, isn't it? It is. Because that was Shane Doan's number. But it's 2023. Does someone have to buy someone a watch? I thought that was cool.
Starting point is 02:03:06 Yeah, no, that's really cool. No, it's cool for a previous NHL office employee, Shane Doan. No one has benefited from the Coyotes more than the Toronto Maple Leafs. No. The Matthews. There is no franchise in the league that has benefited from hockey in Arizona more than the Toronto Maple Leafs. And it's funny because it should be the Arizona Coyotes benefiting from them being there. But it's Toronto that has reaped the benefits.
Starting point is 02:03:30 I'm not cheering for the failure of hockey in Arizona. I am cheering for a building larger than a kitchen. Yes. I think that's a fair thing to cheer for. I think so. I think most people would agree. A couple of things that I wanted to bring up. John Gibson is a goaltender who every year makes the rounds as could they trade him?
Starting point is 02:03:52 and uh shana goldman uh with the athletic put together eight teams that he could go to this year if he gets moved and it made me realize as i thought there seems to be a lot of goalies available i'm realizing too how many teams need it um so hellebuck's supposed to be available carter hart's supposed to be available now john gibson uh and potentially a few others you're also going to have freddie anderson and auntie uh ranta unrestricted um so the one of the first names that she puts on that list are the carolina hurricanes um he's got here's the thing though gibson's contract is really still very long it's the four more years at 6.4 million each and less and less recent evidence of him being good
Starting point is 02:04:36 like the team has been dog shit and and kyle these are the ducks are not a team that's gonna hold back salary they're not gonna take that salary back they're not gonna i don't think so so like uh like what's what's the money what's the actual money breakdown i think it's actually just a solid if i remember correctly when we talked about it because i was like advocating uh in in one of my worst please tell me it's not just solid i think it is i'm looking it up right now john gibson cap friendly uh it is solid no signing bonuses shit sakes so he's owed 24 20 26 million dollars in the next four years and he has a modified no trade clause so whatever team gets him will then have to work with that as well oh i'm dying yeah that is uh but but who's doing
Starting point is 02:05:27 that gibson is not the guy that that i'm really focused on here i'm focused on the teams that need goaltending okay let's talk about okay you got like five minutes left okay pittsburgh penguins carolina hurricanes new jersey devils maybe uh well somebody to go with vanichick and schmied and schmied i don't know if you believe here schmied uh ottawa senators is an interesting one because he's got a contract and it's long and they like that the detroit red wings maybe oh they have billy who's over two more years but could it be a good thing and what about and i thought about this too the buffalo sabers sabers are fascinating i i think they try to get a guy like ranta because devin levi devin levi might be the real deal uh and what
Starting point is 02:06:15 about lastly the la kings yeah if they don't hold on to corpus sello yeah i mean you have your pick of the litter no offense to corpus sello who played well for them in the regular season if you look at all the choices out there there are better ones than corpus sello he's fine he's not the cream of the crop no um detroit is a funny one that is a funny one they do need a backup again that's i think it's an expensive fucking backup though expensive fucking backup oh for gibson yeah oh no no shot like i i again look at ranta dude i don't look at gibson as a good option for anybody so well and i was just stuck with him you're gonna have to it's gonna have to be like a there's gonna have to be some money coming back right um and
Starting point is 02:07:06 it's the ducks like they're not gonna want to do that it's just i don't understand when there are so many goalies available and there is so little between them why you need this one you know what i mean yeah you don't he was a world beater yep years ago yep and you're just taking a tremendous a sleep of faith assuming he's going to become that again on your not dog shit team like there are you know you could look at freddy you could look at ranta you could look at some of the other guys available and go well there's a recent track record of them being good at this and we don't have to give up assets to get them you know if the ducks are willing to sweeten it maybe
Starting point is 02:07:52 but otherwise stay away okay well you know what we'll wrap it up there because Jesse's saying we had five minutes left so why don't we just wrap why don't we just wrap and we'll do a big old press conference on Monday no unless a whole bunch of teams make a bunch of trades and then we won't have one
Starting point is 02:08:09 I think there's gonna be a trade later today do you yeah gonna fuck the whole show up really let's go have a great weekend we'll see you Monday the steve dangle podcast powered by sports interaction want to bet follow the guys on twitter at steve underscore dangle at adam w y l d e and at jesse blake connection complete
