the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go it's firing and press conference day becoming a bit of a tradition here in in toronto
a new generation of i just got here in fact not though it's no one's here
i fired the guy and now no one's here
there will be no i just got here going into next season but let's start with the news yesterday we
We knew there was going to be a board meeting between Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and their CEO, Keith Pelley.
Currently, Rogers occupies three board seats.
Bell occupies three board seats and Larry Tannenbaum occupies two.
And the way it works is Keith comes in and he goes, here's where you're my recommendation since you guys hired me.
Here's what I'd like to do. And then they vote on it.
Now, it was reported yesterday that Bell is treating their seats as more of a, hey, Rogers, what do you want to do?
and will do that uh even though they will still be the owner until like june or july keith pelly
didn't confirm or deny whether or not the sale went through or like the transition went through
because it was speculated that it could have gone down as early as this week like i could have just
made the the the transition like we all know it's ending so like why don't we just get over with it
since there's gonna be so many changes within mlse and he was asked a couple times in different ways
And he wouldn't say whether or not because I don't think he's allowed to say.
Yeah. But yeah, there's I assume Rogers was the only people who had voting interest in this decision.
Well, and this is the thing, right? What happened in the past was and this is what I keep talking about with ownership structure.
When Steve's ready to throw me off the roof here is that those three seats that each of them occupied, you'd have to get Larry Tannenbaum on board with one side or the other.
Or you'd have to get Rogers and Bell to work together to get something passed.
and that is what created a bit of a stasis situation at the top sometimes um and obviously
you know just a perfect example of that is um when uh david freesdale was was uh not renewed
or let go or whatever the heck happened there he was the last ceo of mlse it took them two years
to fill that position two years they sat without a ceo they had an interim ceo and she just retired
but um it was not you know her job was not to do what keith pelly's doing her job was not to
reorganize the organization and i think that's what rogers wants to do so uh jesse i guess we'll
start with the maple leafs uh the maple leaf statement yesterday after the board meeting
which was kind of expected right everybody sort of expected hey shanahan will be let go
some people were still clinging on to the idea that he could stick around because he presented
to keith pelly that we got really close at game seven of the second round and
we we are how many times are you permitted to say that we are right there and if there's a little
bit more tweaking if you allow me to do that tweaking i can stick around and get this team
over the hump and obviously keith pelly decided against that you just don't get to say that the
same way the oilers a couple years ago get to say that right or last year or well they almost won
like okay so there was you know you could argue a time where the oilers were in a position where
they're like i don't know should we shake this up a bit and 2022 they make it to the final four and
they're very happy about that and they get swept and no one's happy about that see what's happening
in Carolina right now and then the next year you put together that effort against Vegas but it
wasn't nine consecutive years of disappointment so they were able to ride that into you know what
let's keep it together let's see how this goes let's maybe add a couple pieces to it they go to
the Stanley Cup final and no one's blowing up a team that goes to the Stanley Cup final
now here's the Leafs so their statement yesterday I don't know Adam if you want to read it over the
past 11 seasons Brendan Shanahan has made countless contributions to the Toronto Maple Leafs on the
ice and off the ice in the in the community uh Brendan is one of the most respected leaders in
the game and he has instilled many of the traits that were the signature of his hall of fame career
throughout the organization united this storied uh uniting the storied franchise in the honor
pride and courage that it was founded on our responsibility and driving motivation however
is to add a new chapter to the maple leafs championship history and that and it was
determined that a new voice was required to take the team to the next level in the years ahead the
franchise will be forever grateful to brendan's for uh to for brendan's contributions and wish
him and his family every success and happiness in the future that is from mlse ceo keith pelly
now we do have a statement from brendan shanahan should i wait on that or should i get to that now
No, I think you read it now.
Okay, following a meeting today,
I was informed that I was no longer going to remain
president and alternate governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
I want to thank the board of MLSC
for the tremendous support they've shown me over my tenure.
Toronto was where I was born and raised,
where my family still lives,
and being a part of this historic franchise
will always be one of the greatest honors of my life.
I want to thank the entire Maple Leafs staff
for their commitment and hard work over the years.
They are second to none in the National Hockey League.
I want to thank our alumni for their support
and the tremendous work they do at our games
and within the community.
Many of them were my heroes growing up
and it has been a pleasure to get to know them all
on a personal level.
I want to thank the fans for their passion and loyalty.
Your love for the team inspired me every day.
While I am proud of the rebuild we embarked on in 2014,
ultimately I came here to win a cup and we did not.
There is nothing more I wanted to deliver to our fans
and my biggest regret is that we could not finish the job.
I really enjoyed working with Brad and Craig
and I firmly believe they are excellent in their roles
and have done a great job in their time with the team.
I also want to thank the players.
They are committed and passionate about delivering a championship to this city
and will do everything within their power to accomplish that goal.
I wish them the very best.
Thank you, Brendan.
Now, I know I've been calling for this guy to be fired for like at least two years.
Why aren't you dancing?
Wear your dancing shoes, Steven.
Because I don't revel in these things happening.
Not according to the internet.
Well, that's fine.
That's fine.
That's okay.
You know, they think I'm wrong.
I think they're wrong.
Oh, now look at us.
Texas State.
Well, you'd rather them lose and get your numbers pop anyway.
Let's go.
I like when there's no games.
It's great for a sports media business.
When there's no games, it's great.
Yeah.
It's so good.
Like, listen, I've been calling for this for at least a couple years.
What I've liked about this sort of retrospective over the last 24 hours, I guess.
It hasn't been.
No, it hasn't even been.
It hasn't even been 24 hours.
No, it came down like, what, like six yesterday?
Yeah.
When we were prepping for this show, Adam's like, oh, yeah, the news that came down.
I'm like, oh, yeah, we haven't done a show about this yet.
It was yesterday.
Yeah, it was literally yesterday.
He did some really, really good things, especially towards the beginning of his tenure here.
He repaired a lot of relationships with their alumni, and he hammered that.
Alumni, alumni, alumni, and Legends Row.
That statue downstairs, man.
People take a ton of pictures.
Yeah.
Yeah, like getting Dave Keon to return to the Leafs.
Sundin was a little bit more involved.
I think there's still some work to do there.
I mean, Sundin wasn't at – so I made a video today.
It's not out yet, but it's going to be my five favorite things
that Brendan Shanahan did with the Leafs.
And one of them, I mentioned the alumni,
but remember that Matt Sundin was not at the alumni thing.
Thomas Cabralet was in his place.
Do you remember that?
When was this?
This was in the 100-year celebration.
Matt's wasn't there.
Yeah.
So there's still repair.
there's still stuff to repair there's damage there and he did a lot of really good work
with that they were in a brutal place you know obviously when you're bad uh you get to pick high
and you need some luck the Leafs got a ton of it um William Nylander was the fact he was available
at eighth overall is insane because the Canucks picked Jake for 10 and sixth and the Hurricanes
pick hayden flurry seventh that kneelander falls into your lap awesome great so you pick them uh
marner is available at four which you also happen to have the former well the current owner of the
team of the london knights working for you at that point too which gives you an inside track
on if this guy is good or not but but that draft was mcdavid yeah eichel and then it went mcdavid's
teammate dylan strome yep and mitch marner mitch uh dylan strome has turned into a very good player
he's not mitch marner it's taken him a long time he's never been mitch marner like in his in his
pro career again he's done some very good things who knows he could win a cup next year we don't
know but in his pro career he's never been mitch so there's a high pick and there's still some luck
involved and then you win a lottery and it's austin and they planned to win that lottery by
the way oh they sure did and oh they threaded the needle we're gonna get mike babcock we're actually
they got some pretty good goaltending that year from reimer they traded them right in the nick
of time and they finish last by the skin of their teeth and they're one of the best last place teams
ever and you still have to win a lottery and second overall pick that year was going to be
line a no matter what can you imagine the fortunes of this team and how they well fortunes is maybe
aggressive can you imagine if they didn't get austin matthews right so a lot of things go their
way they change the logo which i i didn't even realize how badly they needed it you look at
those jerseys now like willie and his in his rookie year oh it looks disgusting i do want to
say that uh in the same year William Nylander and Dion Phaneuf played on the Leafs and Phil Kessel
there's a picture of uh Nylander and Kessel I think it was a pre-season game crazy weird to
look at it's really weird to look at you forget how long Shanahan's been here he was hired to the
Leafs a month after I moved to Oshawa and extend he extended Randy Carlisle people forget that
that was like one of the first things he did and he almost extended Dave Boland um I've heard he
was very close there and he wanted them bad and that contract was in that case the panthers saved
us yes in that case and they said don't worry that bill's gonna come due and it certainly has
he did a lot of good things there's a reason why why we were all thumping you know for the shanna
plan um brought respectability back yes remember he suspended nasm cadre for showing up late to
practice like there's going to be standards here yeah and even if that wasn't directly his decision
he brought in mike babcock when he was hired like obviously he's persona non grata now but
when he was hired that was fortune beyond any leaf fans wildest dreams lou lamorello joining
the toronto maple leaf still seems like a fever dream i remember getting the notification on my
phone and going what i was on the train i was on the train heading to smash fest the um that the
the the table tennis tournament dominic moore's table tennis dominic moore's thing and there's
a ton of hockey media that go that every year and we're all just looking at each other like
what the fuck is this like he i found out he was leaf gm before i found out he quit the devils
Yeah. Like that, that all happened very fast. Shanahan got so much stuff done. It was impossible to not think of him as the guy. And what buried him was this team that he built in this team that he was confident in, in this team that a lot of people were confident in.
as people lost confidence in the team in the core and as circumstances changed the world
stopped the cap stopped going up he and everyone he employed and was the superior of refused to
change you had so many different opportunities to try to move off of this core and they wouldn't
do it and they're gonna grow into it and people had the audacity to be like well eisenman didn't
win until x year or whatever year almost became a senator yeah like trying to trick us into
the idea that those red wings were anything like these leaves i bought that yeah i bought that we
did i thought for a while cj on this person on the show did a fantastic job spelling out like his
brendan shanahan's thinking behind that the those detroit red wings and how the toronto maple leafs
of 2025 the reason that they're unsuccessful right now is because of the 96 97 detroit red wings yeah
where brendan shanahan was on that team in that organization and steve eisenman was drafted in
85 86 yep and they didn't win the cup or sorry it might have been even before drafted before that
played his rookie season in 85 86 so we're talking about his rookie season to when they win the cup
in 96 97 that's a long time to keep believing in the core he was drafted 1983 yeah his rookie
season's 84 no it was 83 84 83 84 okay with uh with detroit 39 goals 87 points so the detroit
red wings say we have this player we have this nucleus of guys we're gonna keep running it back
until it works and brendan shanahan lived through that and was like you can't just give up on
talented players and he saw austin matthews and mitch marner and willie milan and john tavarez
as the same nucleus as a championship team that they had in detroit and him living that experience
and being successful is the reason he doesn't have a job today and the one thing jesse i want
to add to that first off bars second yes what's interesting about that is he ignores the biggest
part of what made those detroit red wings successful no salary cap no him detroit traded
paul coffee a young keith primo who hadn't performed in the playoffs wasn't he like a
first overall and a first round pick to the hartford whalers for shanny and a guy named
brian glenn probably probably a distant relative brian glenn i'm still trying to find a brian glenn
jersey paul coffee hall of fame defenseman was still performing at that point he'd also won two
cups he won uh four with edmonton four or five with edmonton and then two more coffee two more
with the pittsburgh penguins right keith primo was their young stud centerman who was a monster
and and a first round pick guys and they bring in shanney that's trading from the core
and he ignored that part of it and that's the part where and i i gotta give anthony
a huge shout he did a killer article yesterday and he talked about in it he's like shanahan came
in he does very good work and was this cutting edge guy willing to try things take chances on
young guys like duvis all right this isn't worked we gotta try something new and then when he and
then he says or was it was it was it down goes brown that wrote this both of them had great
articles yesterday and basically what what i think down goes brown said was at at the back half so
the first five or six years he's cutting it he's willing to take risks the second five or six years
he becomes the antithesis of what he was when he came in he was afraid to make moves he was afraid
to fire keith after the montreal series he was afraid to trade off the roster after the montreal
series that was that series in retrospect uh should have been a bigger uh-oh than then we
gave it credit for that one it's the next year with him that's such a good point because we
forget that brendan shanahan was the president of the front office that was regarded as a bunch
of calculator boys yes he was not the old guard that was just like you know we gotta tough out
this hockey and do everything he went away against the grain in every regard and built his front
office with a capologist in pridham who built the cba and then brought in dubas who had no
and hunter but was like a smart nerd yeah and brendan shanahan built that and that was his
first half of his tenure and then the back half is just unsuccessful and not only that jesse before
that he revolutionized nhl player safety he brought videos remember videos and social media
oh my god was probably the last guy who was any good at that job i agree with that he was
criticized for penalizing for suspending guys too much and so you roll it back and now it's just i
don't know whoever elbows the most people in the head wins like whoever concusses the most players
wins yep um yeah every year so you look at you look at on balance what he was able to do and
this is what i'll say in my video a little bit but you know when he came in we were begging for
just give me a playoff game now we're begging with for uh just give me a shot at the cup so that bar
has been lifted but what was clear is they got to a certain point and he became as we all do afraid
to lose it all i don't want to make the mistake where we go for it and it turns out to be the
wrong decision it's easier to do nothing and hope and that's where when you and keith pelly mentioned
it or it was mentioned to keith pelly and he acknowledged it in the press conference today
where you get fans after this many years of this throwing beer and jerseys on the ice and you know
we'll get to all that but i think that is how his career needs to be viewed it's it's the first half
where he revolutionizes this team.
That 100-year celebration was really special.
Them making the playoffs that year was really special.
And anybody who tells me,
oh, them making the playoffs that year really set them back,
I'm like, you guys are wrong.
What they did not do,
what they did not do is they were not ruthless
with their free agents who were walking.
Your Gardeners, your Van Riemsdykes, your Bozaks,
you need, need, need.
Your Marners.
Well, your Marners.
Hyman.
You needed to trade off the roster.
You needed to, hey, we got a year left with this guy.
He's at the peak of his value.
we're going to create this new phrase it's called an own rental and we're going to try to sell that
which if they had acknowledged hey listen the first two or three years of these guys making
the playoffs it's house money and they traded van riemstek and they traded bozak with a year
to go on their deals they'd have had a lot more assets to work with but the underlying ethos of
the regime now that we have the ability to look back on it is all of those guys you named and
all of the big stars they believe in their guys yes not even just the matthews and marners and
lander it's the jvr bozax and and hyman's of the world where we're not going to trade them at the
deadline because we want them for this last couple months of the season and the hyman one is
especially egregious so like i'm going back his his last three seasons with the leafs 21 goals 41
points in 71 games then 21 goals 16 assists 37 points in just 51 games so you're talking about
a player that's probably like he went from an 06 to an 0809 points per game it's like a 55 60 65
maybe point player then 15 goals 18 assists 33 points in 43 games so now we're talking about
like a 65 70 point player and he was rumored to be getting something in the five to five and a
half range and the reason he's not still in Toronto is that was too rich for their blood
yeah because they'd spent too much money already now at the time the cap was flat well the cap was
flat and I'm not going to I'm not going to lie to you and like I was like damn that's a lot for
Zach Hyman for this team in retrospect that was a perfectly reasonable contract for this player
But they couldn't afford it because they refused to move off of the big four dudes.
Jonas Siegel made a really good point about that, too.
And he put it in a perspective that I hadn't thought of, where Lou Lamorello's ethos has always been, if you have time, use it.
And so Mitch Marner's camp, and we knew this, they were willing to do eight over eight with a year to go, like pre-John Tavares, which would have seemed crazy at the time.
Yeah, on the OG contract.
yes on the on the og so when he was after the second year of his elc yeah if the leafs had
gone eight times eight with him they would have signed so instead of an 11 million dollar player
you got an eight million dollar player contract would have expired a year ago but it would
completely changed how everything went and you wouldn't have the negotiating through the media
thing nope and then also then also they don't have matthews done and they also don't have
nylander done and so they go and they sign tavaris the same summer they gotta get nylander done
and shanning comes out and he goes well we all had to accept less in detroit no you didn't you
had no salary cap um and uh and but we want we accepted less to play together okay sorry listen
coming out of the 0405 lockout everyone who wasn't me had to accept yeah that's essentially what
happened well yeah oh so what did shanahan do during that uh what was the 94 lock no no it was
it was the 04 lockout oh that's the picket line that's that's when he he walked over yeah he along
with uh i think it was there was a there's some pretty significant names who are like heroes of
that generation who walked out on their own union oh steve is that what you're referring to should
we maybe just let's at least say it and and also the reason you even have an elc now is because
the guys like him saying hey well we all took less and we won i'm sorry is that not turning
the screws against your own players then are you weaponizing the media is that not weaponizing the
fans against your own guys you know i bet they love playing for him like come on that's it's not
it's not good yeah it's and again it continues and we're up here we're up here and oh i didn't
like that oh i didn't like that oh i didn't like that i didn't like that every fork in the road
they came to they made the wrong decision right the the hyman one now that you bring it up like
i forgot the contract was 5.5 i think he did he settle on 525 with uh i can't remember it was a
it was seven years it was either 525 or 5.5 and then what like two years later tyler bertuzzi
for the leafs that one season his contract 5.5 million dollars like tree like yeah are we hyman
before he popped off in edmonton people are gonna be like oh we didn't know okay fine we didn't know
but before he popped off in edmonton he was very much a five five and a half million dollar player
and now edmonton has one of the sweetest contracts in the whole nhl um and leon dry
sidle like hyman and dry sidle combined this year make less than what dry sidle is going to make
next like it's great like no wonder they're in the final four yeah it's it's so it's it's those
contracts of where you rely you double down on your guys and it's the ones that Adam are talking
about Adam is talking about where they don't get it done early for some like the William Nylander
one that just got done they waited on that and then when he became a god in Sweden that's when
they're like oh we got it we gotta sign him they allowed him to go out there and have one of the
most magical moments of his life on a global stage and then we're like okay we can negotiate all
All right, I guess we're okay now.
Old rental until it maybe makes sense.
So continually, they allow these guys to pump up their own value
by not getting it done early, and that's on Shanahan.
It's time and time again.
I also would say that, and just hang on one second.
I'd also just say in that timeline, Jesse,
you put a rookie GM in there, right?
He goes out and he hits a home run with Babs and Shani
in front of Tavares, but what happened?
So Lou doesn't get those contracts done.
Lou fully expected to stick around.
Lou was surprised when Shandy said
No we're putting Dubas in there
And Dubas then has to do Tavares
Which was great at the time
And then you go oh well shit
I got three RFAs I gotta do
And his first RFA sits out till
Almost Christmas
And I don't think it helps that
You bring in the assistant GM
To be the GM
And one of his top priorities
You know oh Tavares hey that's great
But one of his top priorities
is undoing the things the previous GM did.
Well, like the Zaitsev deal and some of the other stuff, yeah.
Yes, but then he goes and gets CeCe and he does all this,
and he makes some rookie GM mistakes.
Like, that is a breakneck transition to go from Lou Lamorello
to a man who just exited his 20s.
Well, I think also Jonas mentions before Lou even got here,
it was Mark Hunter and Kyle Dubas that traded Phil Kessel to Pittsburgh
and retained yes they retained two million dollars on that and yes they got kesbury captain yes they
got a first rounder but like what and i think if brendan doesn't put kyle dubas in that position
as a rookie gm i don't think kyle dubas is sitting on a podium saying we can and we will
i don't think a man who just got this job or somebody who's a veteran in this league is saying
those words to the media yep he didn't know he didn't know he shouldn't be saying those things
But he was going to put a position in front of a mic and he said it and it bit him in the ass time and time again.
Yeah.
Well, because the agents are like, oh, really?
We can and we will.
We can and we will, too.
Yeah.
And so and that's the thing.
The guys, the guys who play on the team all wanted their money.
All of them.
I don't blame them, but they did.
None of them took less.
And, you know, and the Leafs also didn't force the issue.
Not one.
and then this flat and then and then the worldwide pandemic hits yeah now people are gonna
retroactively be like well william neilander took less at the time no no he did not that was a
massive deal yeah it looked real good near the end of it but no he very didn't and that year he
cost himself that season willie did not have a good season that year because he didn't play hockey
for three months and he sat out and then he gets paid 10.9 retroactively on the cap that year yes
like it was an ugly season it and it it's it's funny because people are like yeah that was a
crazy steal or whatever guy had like 60 points we were giving and you have to remember the cap is
75 million dollars at that point so you're giving seven you're giving almost 10 of your cap to a
guy that makes 60 points yeah like that that is that's crazy right like you look at dawson mercer
or whatever he got 60 points and he's got four million he's in 54 useless games that was a rough
After signing his contract.
That's Tavares' first year, by the way.
54.
5-4.
Games.
10 times 5 plus 4.
In 54 games, he had 7 goals.
20 assists, 27 points.
He was a bum that season.
A bum.
And we did our best to be like, well, this game, he generated a bum.
He had a gap year.
Yes.
Yeah, and he ended up being good the next year.
He was very good.
But that season, he was a bum.
A bum.
Seven goals?
Get off of the ice.
That's on everything that went into that decision
to lead to him sitting out until December 1st.
Here, let me look it up.
So he had seven goals, 27 points.
What did Nick Robertson have this year?
Nick Robertson had 14 goals this year.
Yeah.
Nick, I typed in Ribertson.
It still came up.
in 69 games he had 15 goals seven assists 22 points so fewer points but more than double the
goals yeah and played more games like he was awful yeah yeah so so then you you know obviously we
kind of know the more recent history i think they made some mistakes like you know hey we acquired
jared mccann to protect justin hall and i'm sorry i'm gonna tell you i called that that's my that's
that's my cross and i will bear it all right that was crazy hey you want depth scoring no you don't
and and i think so there are there have been some mistakes but i i do think it's important that in
the first four or five years we acknowledge the change in the organization that occurred how and
what made the mistakes like nylander palatable or like overpaying for marner or like you know
whatever what what made that palatable was the fact that we'd seen such a quick change to success
over the previous five years, we go, wow, what's made this last five years so frustrating is we've
seen almost no steps forward with the exception of, and I would say this year, I do think there
were steps forward this year. I know people hate, some people hate the Berube system. I know it's
not analytically inclined, but they did get to game seven. I think their defense and goaltending
is better than I've ever seen it. And they're going to have to figure out a way to score goals
in the postseason. And by the way, I don't care how they would have done against Carolina. They
didn't play carolina they played florida you have to beat the best teams you don't like i don't know
if people realize this but you have to beat the best ones it's not just uh it's not just a fantasy
lineup in your head we've only known one president in the history of this podcast like we've been
doing this podcast since 2013 and brendan shanahan was hired in 2014 before that um there wasn't a
president at the time right a lot of what you're talking about is tim liwicki's doing as the
trickle-down effect he was the ceo of mlsc before uh in the before times back in 2013 he only stuck
around for two years i think he left sometime in 2015 but he came in and he tore up the walls and
he said we're doing things new here and he hired brendan shanahan he hired messiah jury during his
short stint as mlsc um ceo and he brought in those two presidents and that changed the organization
Yeah, both of them, like as a whole, obviously, Masai won the championship and Brendan did some really great things. But I think, like, I'm very grateful that Laiwiki spent those months here as CEO of MLSC because it seems like he taught Brendan and Masai how to run an organization as a whole to have a good core as a team.
It felt like before that, the Leafs were a little lost with the alumni and everything.
The Raptors were just spinning in the wind.
Who cares about the Raptors at that time?
They were struggling to get over the hump.
No, they didn't get to the hump before Masai.
Before.
Masai did the hump thing, but before.
They were a joke of a franchise.
Before Fuck Brooklyn?
Yeah, way before that.
And I feel like Tim Laiweke and what he's done in his career as, like, a professional media person.
He's amazing.
Like, he's been incredible.
And I'm happy that Brendan got the opportunity to learn under him and change the culture of the Leafs.
Because I feel like the culture of the team is in a good place right now.
The culture of the organization is in a good place.
Well, they want to win.
And what I was told before is that when it was, you know, pension plan to own, they didn't care.
No.
And it's, I mean, the fans could have told you that.
Yes.
uh but i mean there's a reason why the blog was called pension plan puppets it was bad it was
those are the four times that i'm speaking about the ppp times and like if you go way before that
that's the harrow ballard times where the organization is actually a tire fire yeah
and disgusting and that's kind of what we had for 50 years of toronto maple leafs hockey
and then finally rogers and bell they buy it and tana bomb gets in there and like wiki gets hired
and it feels like it's at least in a comfy place right now where we're just strictly talking about
winning on the ice yes which they couldn't do with shanahan yes agreed agreed maybe that's why
people were like we don't understand what you're complaining about who things used to be so much
worse yeah well yeah but that's not an acceptable position either it's freaking not um and they
wouldn't move off it and like i i said this in my video breakdown like shanahan did some really
good things he is not leaving the leafs in a good spot they're gonna lose marna for nothing that's
bad beginning middle end like there's no way to to like okay they're getting cap space well you
would have got that if you traded them also like you're getting nothing for a star bad uh we don't
know what's going on with John Tavares okay fine how many prospects you got two how many draft
picks you got not a lot so you're gonna lose a star for nothing and like oh yeah you can trade
to you know fill that cap trade what trade what oh okay well they're gonna have to trade a player
which one riley has a full no move um yarn croak has trade protection camp has trade protection
domi has trade protection what what are you doing what's the plan here they're he's done a lot of
really good things they're in a they're in a terrible spot that's very interesting you say
that because i think a lot of people would have a different perspective on that and how much winning
they've done over the last like nine consecutive playoffs that's a lot of winning yes it feels like
they're close to getting over the hump looking but looking forward i think that's very interesting
there's like there's definitely a path where they still make the playoffs next year they maybe even
do well in the playoffs who knows even get further but there's a lot of work to do an
unbelievable amount of work to do you know maybe that's handy you know maybe at least they have
options this year yes like it's not a repeat of like Dubas coming in and being like all right
gotta clean up this old man's mess which is basically what he did for like two years yeah
when he joined in and then the world stopped I'm sure that helped everything but it looking at
the tools they have like going into the draft it's not great so are you of the opinion that
it's very urgent that the leafs win or at least go on the very deep run sometime very soon because
of the three-year window i've seen talked about with austin matthews yeah and if if that window
expires and they are in a similar position they are and now are we talking about a full rebuild
rebuild of the roster I like the Leafs don't need a full rebuild now I think that's silly but
Austin's contract comes due like what is the next generation of Leafs like Tanev when Austin
Matthews contract is over the decor is going to be geriatric like they're already one of the older
decors in the nhl they're gonna have guys pushing 40 or kicking its door down um there's nice
he's the young guy we'll see what cowan turns into will danforth even be in the league by then
danford danford i called him danforth shit uh he's gonna be he's gonna take some time he's gonna
take some time he's gotta make better i love him he's good but he's got to make better puck
decisions and stuff the defense would take longer yeah but i like i i liked like i watched them uh
for a little bit in the ohl final and obviously the london knights beat the gens this guy is
willing to block a shot with his face like i want to see this guy in training camp and in preseason
games learning from a guy like chris tan yeah of course like i love that but other than nize there's
no guaranteed member of the next generation of leafs so if you don't accomplish anything over
the life of matthew's contract yeah maybe you you look at it that's why i'm i'm kind of on board with
you know if nye signs a long-term deal i won't be sad about it and he'll be a leaf for longer
yeah i'm on board with that i love matthew nyes i'd die for him he doesn't even know me i've never
met him but if he signs something that's like a three or a four-year deal at like producer drew
was posting like the dawson mercer contract i think it was three years times four million bucks
all hit the roof that's a great deal that helps you win immediately yeah i think if it gets to
the seven or eight million dollar thing it's it's seven or eight year right yes like that's what it
is it so is what's better for this team maybe something short right adam is it too bleak of
an outlook to look at this team and say shanahan left them in a mess and like in three years if
austin's gone like we're looking at rebuild they're missing the playoffs kind of territory i think i
think there is definitely a this is sliding doors right you know oh yeah um i think there's a world
where that's true i also think people are looking at this the wrong way so the conversation online
first off let me just say this who's people uh matthew nye's by the way remember that matthew
nye since you bring him up the matthew nye's trade that i talked about on on monday oh adam tell me
all about it uh so you know who was involved in that is alan walsh and so if you want to know
what really happened i asked alan today and he answered the question with the marco andre flurry
to toronto so we don't need to be like well what happened no agent of the player with full trade
protection yes extension on the line tells you exactly what happened there are conflicting
reports out there alan clears it all up wonderful yeah so that's coming out on ap this weekend agent
provocateur of sdpn credit it when it comes out no one does no one likes that no one likes the
credit i don't give a good gosh darn what you like so so he will give us credit so i know we're
getting up a little off track here i just want to hear your thoughts on the outlook my outlook is
that you can't like people are like well if you let marna walk you can't replace him yeah i agree
um i think that you replace the point is though no but no hold on it you got to be more creative
than that yeah guys where else are you going to find another 100 point guy who does a b and c
you're not man hey you're not you know what's crazy though the free agent crop while not the
greatest this year isn't so bad and then i've been dming with people people are like well listen like
if you see tavaris as a 3c this is where i see him in ultimately this is what i want i want them to
get a 2c i think they solve a lot of their bottom six problems by making him a 3c but people are
who you get it's bennett's nelson like what else is there i'm like i don't fully know what's
available in the trade market i don't fully know what's available like i know sort of what's
available free agency but guess what i'm not paid for i'm not paid to figure that out for you well
that's maple leaf sports is it's fun to try it's fun to try but i look okay i've got i'm gonna do
a video this weekend about about some of this stuff here are some of the guys that are available
just centers okay so you got brock nelson who i love yanny gourd who steve loves he's not a 2c
anymore i don't think no he's not sam bennett who drager said today he's not totally sure that sam
Bennett wants to come to Toronto. That runs counter
to what I hear, but I would say I would
defer to Dregger on that one.
Duchesne,
who has got, by the way,
the one thing about Bennett that is a bit of a turn
off for me, he's horrific in the face
off dot. Horrific. He's like a 45,
46% guy. Matt
Duchesne, 82 points in 82
games this year. Hasn't had the
greatest playoff, and then I think he had the dagger
against Edmonton the other day. Ryan Donato
is also available, but he doubled his
career high in points with the bad chicago team and sometimes it's like it's not that that's not
impressive but somebody with the bad team's got to score i'll take them but like a heck of a risk
i think yeah um and so okay then do you also look at marshan ehlers besser jamie ben dadnoff looks
really good on a in a depth role in dallas drew in although i think he's going to stay in colorado
like like there are people you can fill out the roster with here right like people like what's
it's just not a great crop this year yeah but it's not empty now everybody's gonna have money
to spend but the Leafs are gonna have some of the most money to spend and one thing I think you do
have to do even though I know he's got a no no movement and you mentioned it you got to look at
maybe finding a new home for Morgan Riley oh totally so you got to look at everything but
again you're not necessarily gonna be able to get it done you're not gonna be able and and so yes
to Jesse to answer your question in the most long way I possibly could uh I think it is I I think
the way the team steps forward after this sort of like you know when a pitcher leaves the game
and the guys still on base are uh you know if they if they reach home that goes against the
pitchers the previous responsibility yeah that will still be on shanning that will how the leafs
move forward from this for the next six to eight months i think still shanning has an effect on
that and that should be pinned to his time here good or bad well this is part of the reason why
you make decisions quicker it's part of the reason i've been harping on this for years years
and like i don't recall during those years generally speaking being like fire this guy
fire that guy it's but no i wanted them to move off the court it was the one thing they refused
to do and now they have no choice yeah they don't have a choice in the matter it's it's up to mitch
marner and that's it sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them
and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal
one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to
repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around
on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a
second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing
and the washer thing.
The chemicals.
You've got to have the right chemicals.
See, that's what I'm saying.
That's why I used TaskRabbit

Yes.
And Jesse, you were there.
I was.
And just curious,
just what was the temperature of the room?
You can see,
it's cool to see the levels of production
that go into who's speaking because if you've ever been down to scotia bank arena you watch
the tsn broadcast when they're there live on location there's a certain area of scotia bank
where the tsn panel do it from the arena it's like at the gate they can't see that okay it's
the entrance of gate six yeah sorry hello right over here you kind of see it yeah yeah it's like
behind me right yeah that little thing in the distance is five six yeah so yeah if you go
right it's six over there yeah no that helps um so by gate six that's where the tsn broadcast
records from when they do their live on location um of the least games and in there in the back
there's a new they're calling it media tv studio area that's a really good that rolls off the
tongue they've never used it before for a press conference oh really never used it before and
then keith pelly needs to speak his second time ever speaking to the full media and they
roll out the red carpet and the big production for him so when you're in that environment you
kind of you can tell like okay this guy's coming here and this is gonna be a big deal
and then um with like berube's obviously like he did it in in his in the leafs um in the leafs
like player room area so you kind of see the levels to that so that was fun to see here i'm
just pulling up the picture here there you go no grit this is their new no oh they got rid of that
okay good a lot of that's mark masters's side of this hey hey that's one of those big journalist
meanings what oh yeah mark mark masters or as the leafs know him sorry before we get into actual
like stuff um the little the little side notes mark masters comes out time to play the game
sorry i'm sorry before we get into the actual stuff the little side notes they they have this
new media area to do the press conference keith pelly's first one gets to use it and the branding
of the leafs i'm not a grammar person but when they say hockey club it's toronto maple leafs
hockey club is the correct grammar no no adam they they have the correct grammar here oh i think it's
just dumb well it should be toronto maple leafs hockey club no but i think like correct by the
definition of the ap grammar people it would be toronto maple leaf hockey club and that's what
they went with but the but the brand is leafs yes so uh they hadn't like down here it says it as
well um and that's what they chose for the ring around interesting belly behind him okay doesn't
that make you just uncomfortable it's annoying i would never have noticed it but now that you
showed it to me i'm bothered it made me very uncomfortable because that's not the team name
i get that it's correct that's a good pick if that if that picture was hung in my basement i'd
be in a stray jacket within five years right just just thinking about that right yeah it's like a
it's like a picture that just is not a little you know not right you know just a little off
This is the correct way to say it
It's also the wrong way to do it
Because it looks ridiculous
I'm so thrown off
You didn't need to put
Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club
Just put Toronto Maple Leafs
Why are you
Zhooshing it up
You don't need to do all this
You're doing too much
Zhoosh is a great word
They went for the
We were founded in 1902
We are the Toronto Maple Leaf
Hockey Club
Here is our CEO
And President Keith Pelley
Walking out
And it's just all awkward
You are doing too much
It's very awkward
But it's to add to the
Exactly
That's the whole idea about it
Hear ye hear ye
I just got here
The remix
I just got here a year ago
He's coming out to say
But I just got here
I just got here a year ago
And we want to win the Stanley Cup
I was talking to some people downstairs
They're like that's not a thing
Hear ye
Hear ye
I don't think we should win the Stanley Cup
We should compete for utter mediocrity
good ding good ding they should have given him one oh yeah they should have and then he should
have started off his press conference by saying off with their head yeah come out with one of
those like british judicial quaker oats wigs looking looking like he just signed the declaration
of independence because when you write toronto maple leaf hockey club that is the attitude you're
going for yes and it's ridiculous guys put a nest this is this is the life of a leaf fan right now
The CEO hasn't even sat down at the podium, and I'm already annoyed.
Did he come out and was like, did he just go like freaking watching you to all of you?
Was he like, it's your fault?
Your fault!
And your fault, your fault!
Anyway, here's some questions.
Hey, guys.
Keith Pelley.
Sorry, I saw Mark in the front row.
Shit.
What the fuck was I about to say?
By the way, he was.
Can you imagine if he was like, what the fuck?
Jesse, if you bring that up one more time here.
Keith Pelley in those glasses.
I noticed that they're Maple Leaf Blue, and I appreciated the detail and effort.
Oh, they're winning the cup now.
Listen, that's a guy who cares.
Listen, so listening to that press conference is kind of weird for me
because I went to so many town halls when Keith Pelley was the head of media at Rogers.
We've all worked for Keith Pelley, full disclosure.
He didn't know us, any of us.
It's Canada.
Like a third of the country has worked for Keith Pelley.
When he was the boss at Rogers, we all worked there at one point.
he handled that press conference the way he handled a lot of um a lot of our town halls and
you know i have to give him credit i think he's a great speaker you don't have to uh i do want
to give him i want to give him credit actually i would i would he's a great speaker um he jumped
aside the questions he didn't want to answer like the one about masai ujiri's future uh but he was
clear on other things you know we want to add a championship chapter it's right in the it's right
in the thing he you know we didn't win since 1967 oh that's great yeah we know that's great
uh good to hear somebody say it but i would i love when he brings out niche stats shut up what
you mean the harvard business review yeah no one's ever talked about the uh the 67 cup yeah
he did bring out a niche stat of when he brought up the harvard harvard uh business review and he
said only 10 of people who have like heart transplants ever change their lifestyle yeah
and he's like changes hard changes wow and he always used to do that at rogers too man like
he'd be like here's this crazy thing that i got from this really smart publication you'd be like
whoa i see the future now like that's a good leader does that i thought of adam during the
press conference because i was like if adam was here we could have started a european golf tour
jar because i know adam how much you understand how much keith pelly loves bringing up his time
at the european golf golf tour listen they can wear shorts now yeah you ever see men golf in
shorts me i did that shit but i do this keith pelly they wear shorts because of me i think it
was about i think it was four times it was three or four uh one time it was but when you're talking
about champions he was like when i was the head of the european golf tour we had a champion every
every week so championships were different yes and this one you know you got a big one every year
you know what jesse i thought of you during that quote because i was like i wonder what jesse's
thinking about this and he talked about the rider cup championship that they won right can you not
act like you're a martian from space no you live here for a very long time why are you stop it you
know when i was in europe ah yes oh we got time on the tour yeah uh but you know listen he's got
to draw from the experience that he has and i get that so so you know i i guess i i'm gonna pull up
your tweets jesse because it's just easier to go by timeline um smack myself very hard did you
really how'd you how'd you hit yourself when you were a king pelly when i was keith king pelly i
do this that's me shorts now see pants not on my watch keith pantsless pelly coming at you
bitch he calls everyone bitch it's it's really rude
It's so rude that he does that
It was a little off-putting
I gotta be honest
He said to you, how you doing bitch
I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa
I get I'm wearing pants
But this isn't the golf tour
And you're so tall
You have more pants than most people
So he's always throwing off my pants
So Jesse, my first question
Before we really get into this
Did you sit with CJ at the press conference?
I sat behind CJ
Okay, so you guys sit together?
DJ sits with the TSN guys.
He sits with Masters and Pierre.
Oh, okay.
The scary guys.
Masters?
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
Man.
What?
Is that spooky?
I'm at it.
Don't say his name.
He must not be named.
So when CJ was sitting with the man responsible for the reason the Leafs do not have a cup
That's right.
Mark Masters.
He probably said it.
Yeah.
He said, there he is.
Did C.J. LeBrun and Masters make a mess when they clinked their chalices of blood in front of everyone?
Blood and tears.
Blood and tears.
That's great.
That's what they want.
Now, Keith was talking about being a Game 5 and Game 7.
He acknowledged that it was quite difficult to be there.
And, you know, the first real question from, like, Kevin McGrann, which they didn't mic him up for, and I was sad about that.
um but you know just imagine Keith's talking about um essentially what the Panthers said
after game seven did the mics not come through on the question on the McGran one it didn't they
had it sorted out by the second question okay that's why I don't know what what exactly he
asked but essentially in and around the first few questions you get an answer about what what
Marchand what Kachuk and what Maurice said about playing in Toronto which is guys it's all your
fault if you just stop caring so much you should play in Florida where no one gives well it's
Because they're trying to, listen, Mitch Marner, they already have said,
I think it was Dregs that had it, that Florida's one of the teams that's interested.
What do you think they're doing?
They're pitching him.
No, no, no.
Now, wait a sec.
Wait a sec.
Panthers fans, you're going to think this is a Canadian talking down to you again.
No.
And, oh, no one in Florida cares about hockey.
No, no, I didn't say that.
Paul Maurice, Brad Marchand, and Matthew Kachuk said that.
Yeah.
Remember, I wrote about this in my book.
When Radko Gudis is like, oh, Canada, boo.
So he went to California.
There are plenty of valid reasons to go to California.
He signed, he probably lives a hop, skip, and a jump from Disneyland.
That's amazing.
The bad one.
Yes.
Let's be honest.
Let's be honest, Anaheim.
You got the second best Disney.
I've only been to one of them, and that's the one I went to.
It was Disneyland.
I never went.
And it was, by the way, all the mistakes they made at Disneyland, they didn't repeat at Disneyland.
Disney World is incredible.
Disneyland, I'm sorry.
I enjoyed my time there.
But he specifically talked about.
Yeah, because he wore shorts.
I did.
It's hard to have a bad time when you're wearing shorts.
As Keith Belly once said.
You know what?
And this blonde guy ran up to me and he just went, fuck yeah!
And he ran away.
And I had no idea who he was.
And now looking back.
It must have been Keith.
It must have been Keith Belly.
Oh man, that's great.
That was the most shit.
He smacked me real hard.
He said, high five, bitch.
He like five-starred me in the back.
And I was like, don't, sir, I'm on my honeymoon.
Don't call me bitch in front of my new wife.
He's like, you're wearing shorts.
I got excited.
Mark Masters is in here.
Isn't this great?
you know mark masters was here i gotta keep my voice down and if he is here i'm freaking
terrified where was he going with that oh yeah the the subtext of every word he spoke was fans
in anaheim don't give a shit that was the sub that's your captain the captain of the ducks
doesn't think anaheim cares about hockey fact fact print it tell him i said it i don't give
a shit and then marshand and kachuk and paul maurice did a whole tour about how florida
doesn't give a shit they don't even sort of give a shit so i'm sorry what's the subtext
what's what's it am i getting it wrong i'd love to know how i'm getting it wrong so i don't need
to invite people to tell me how i'm wrong now they'll do it on their own go ahead what's the
subtext to be fair to cats fans we have plenty of cats panthers fans they joined me for the stream
last night in a bad objectively bad game and they're hilarious yeah they're hilarious and we
love them and you can hang out with us don't worry we like you we like you just not your players and
coach hate you we like you we know you exist and we appreciate that you exist that players on your
team the coach of your team they resent you and wish you didn't go to the game please don't ask
be questions not so do not so that media tour guys gave rise to like the first question and
essentially was about and jesse i'm gonna i'm gonna quote what you wrote here you know pelly
said pressure is a privilege the greatest hockey team in the world is the toronto maple leaves and
as a result you see the passion and the tribalism and that that wasn't even from a question he said
that in his opening statement oh is that right that's how much of a storyline it was they wrote
down that in the first like four sentences you have to talk about the pressure of playing as a
toronto maple leaf yeah like it's the florida panthers have screwed this entire market well
i think that i think they've got the entire press corps asking everybody is it too much right
uh now he also then confirmed that brendan shanahan would not be replaced so it will be
brad and craig reporting directly to keith keith uh was then asked about like will you have player
personnel decision making power and he's like uh listen i'm the ceo of mlsc i'm not the player
personnel guy that was believe it or not what's crazy about what happened today and yesterday
is that is this setup is what dubas wanted this setup is what got dubas fired no one talks about
this but but dubas went to the board and said i want decision making power above shanning that's
why he was let go because again if if they gave him that what's shanee's role we talked about this
in 2023 you take shanee out of that role well why is he there yes dubas and shanee got into a sword
fight and shanee won yes yes they had a power play for the one job and yeah brandon shanahan
won that power and guess what one with more authority and now keep going figure kyle does
need to take some ownership of making some very odd decisions especially towards the end but keith
has come in and effectively put that management structure in place two years later and later on
he's asked about what he did at tfc which is the exact same thing and they were like okay does that
mean uh you took some guidance from that and you're applying those to this and he denied it
but it is clearly how he thinks things should be run that's how he's right i think i think he was
lying a little on that answer but what he did at TFC is exactly what he's done with the Toronto
Maple Leafs because he believes like you don't need too many cooks in these kitchens well I also
think the characterization of that question although true was was a little bit because I
think that I think it was Josh Clokey I think that asked that question and it was sort of like
uh he said well you fired Bill Manning and you won like six games last year and and to which I
think we all know like when you fire a manager and you've got contracts on the books like they
have right now that they can't get rid of because one of their big italian stars had a deal ready
to go hates this place and then he and then he said no actually i don't want to and stuck around
another year so their their rebuild's going to take some time oh yeah bill manning had the highest
payroll in the mls and consistently finished near last place like i don't know if you're keith
pelly what choice you have at least brandon was in the playoffs yes right so you know so clearly
that's how he sees this is going uh so then uh later on um we have a pathway so what what is
the measure of success going forward we know now internally it was the third round this year if the
third round was achieved then they uh they keep everything the same and by the way what's
interesting is they talk about this a little bit in the athletic with some of chris's reporting
and jonas's reporting um the fact that that you know the the door might have cracked open a little
bit if they'd been close in
game five and game seven. But even then, I still
don't think that's the bar. You can't allow
for that. Did you get there or did you not
get there? But those, like if we're
sitting here and last night was
home game again,
number two in the conference finals,
I think Brendan Shanahan still has a job
coming next season. He's probably got an extension.
Yeah. Oh yeah. He signed it. Yeah.
For me, the drop dead date was last
year. It was last year, but
again. Hey, what happened though?
The Leafs, you ever play
a real good hand and then
someone busts out I just got here
and that's what the Leafs
did they busted out
the joker of
all
professional sports which is I just got
here give me a sec
and that's what Shanahan did
when he started with the Leafs
okay so you're firing Randy Carlisle right
up bloom I
just got here and he slammed
that shit down on the table and they kept him for
another year right but by all accounts the board likes brendan shanahan they sided with him in the
dubious debate and they kept him around for 11 years and they were very happy with what he'd done
and it's strictly the on ice performance at the end of the day that got him moved out and if that
was just a little better meaning conference finals this season i think he 100 sticks around no but
that's not a reality and he was asked about it and he said i don't deal in hypotheticals right i'm
not going to answer a question about hypotheticals even though uh like i assume they knew that if
they had gone through he would have stuck around now let me go back in time yes who hired kyle
dubas brendan shanahan who promoted kyle dubas to gm yeah brendan shanahan and he was allowed to
fire him so like how many gms do you get how many head coaches does the team get how many adam made
the great point with the assistant coaches like it's at least a dozen how many of this how many
of that how many of that and there was like one common denominator at the end of the day it was
shanahan and the core and they refused to move off of either of them until it was too late all
right but i think they would have looked at this season as a success with one more victory yeah
one more victory at a certain point you have to pass the bar whether you agree with their bar of
success or not it was their bar is there the debate like you don't agree with their bar of
success i don't agree with it either i think i'm on your side in that he wouldn't have done anything
But that's Rodgers' bar of success.
If they went to the third round, I'm sure it would give me the warm and fuzzies
and I would feel different.
My argument is they were never going to get there.
I started to dream.
They were up 2-0.
I agree.
And they started to kick the Panthers' ass in Game 3.
I can't believe they lost that game.
That's why I would read Anthony Petrelli's article on it, too,
because there's some really great insights about why they lost.
Of all the stuff from that series that I try not to think of,
it's not Game 7.
It's not game five.
I try my best not to think of game three.
I try my best not to think of game three.
3-1.

uh so um you know he said we've made strides and i think he's right i think you listen i know that
nobody wants to hear that but i do think this team is certainly better than it's ever been it was
straight up their best playoff performance since 2002 yeah yeah i've yeah low bar but hey to say
that there weren't strides made i think is incorrect yes he said our ownership group is
one of the best in sports and they provided all the resources to win that i believe uh i do think
there uh that i do think and you gotta you gotta picture this in the sense of like rogers bought
this and then went out and bought the hockey rights and why did they do that right well first
off ed's dad uh uh ted not complicated at all no by the way he was ted jr i'm pretty sure
there was an older ted yeah now uh ted ted rogers was uh an absolute animal like animal in business
and so read his book and have pitched it to me no less than 15 you gotta read it you gotta read
it's crazy rogers versus rogers read the book um but what ed grew up in essentially was a you know
he grew up in a you know a privileged world but he was expected to work in the business
and he was expected to find his own way and i don't think his dad probably was the easiest guy
uh and and i think that there's a little bit of okay my dad made a mark on this country and made
a mark on this corporation and all that stuff now that i'm in control of it what am i gonna do to
make my mark because listen speaking from somebody who's uh in the same industry as a family member
who far outshines them uh you do live in a bit of a shadow and uh no i don't have a brother uh but
the the point of it is i do think that if you were to ask ed and give him truth serum he would tell
you at the no it's two ted's and then an ed no no he he's at the third he's at the third yeah his
dad is edward oh they just called an ed yeah i just thought it was just and the og one the og
one's ed too edward like edward ed edward rogers is the third oh ew does that mean anything
for the leafs cup chances i have a weird third time's a charm is what i would say i have a weird
relationship with the name sorry i interrupted you no it's fine i have a very weird relationship
with the name ted um so you know how uh richard is dick yeah which doesn't make any sense to me
and robert is bob um my grandpa was called ted and my grandma always called him ted
and i was probably close to high school when i found out his real name is ernest
and i don't know if that's common amongst people i don't think that's close i don't know a lot of
i should have grandpa ernie yeah but he's he was ted ernest was ted and i never understood it
That is very odd.
Yep.
Yes.
Her name was Joy, and I found out years later that's just her name.
So, Adam, refer to him as you should.
Ed III.
There you go.
So tell me about Ernest Rogers.
So Edward Rogers, basically, I think he believes, and I don't think he's wrong,
that his mark is going to be in growing Rogers, which he has.
They bought Shaw.
They merged.
It's the biggest telecom in the country and bringing championships to his
favorite teams.
And by the way, he's a big Jays fan.
He's a big Leafs fan.
I don't know how much of a Raptors fan he is,
but it's important for him to win there too.
I'd say he's more of a Jays fan than a Leafs fan.
I think he is.
I think Jays first and foremost.
But the point is,
whether or not the Jays have executed it
the way we'd all want them to,
and they haven't,
they still have one of the highest payrolls in baseball.
It's like a quarter billion.
They have a lot of money wrapped up in the wrong guys
because they hired the wrong general manager.
But the resources are there.
So when Keith Pelley says,
we will have the resources i 100 believe that the most listened to show i i think on this network
just doesn't exist yet and it's just cj doing lfr reactions to the jays and just letting her rip
on on shatkins on the pyro that's such a mean nickname it is it's terrible it's very not nice
It's a mean joint.
It's a bad job.
It's very on the nose.
It's the two of them combined.
I hope it's not on the nose.
It's Shapiro and Atkins.
Yeah.
I never.
But it also references your poopy.
Yeah.
Oh, Steve's learning about it.
It's not one guy.
I thought it was exclusively a reference to poo.
No, no.
It's the two combined being poop.
You didn't get that?
Is this new to you?
Actually?
I had no idea.
Wow.
That's okay.
You're not a Jays.
I didn't know it was Shat Pyro.
I would have come up with something dumb.
Shatkins.
It rolls off the tongue.
It does.
By the way.
I never knew that.
Can I just tell you, in our stream last night, people begged for this to be the title.
I don't think it can be, but I think it's worth mentioning because they made me promise
that I'd bring it up.
People want us to call this, because our episode on Monday was called what?
Shannasplosion.
And what was it called Wednesday?
Closing time.
Closing time.
Closing time.
Do you know what they want to call this one?
What?
Shanna Kand.
Oh, no.
That's not what I thought you were going to say.
I think that's mean.
I think that's mean.
We can't do that.
It's also not that good.
I think it's actually pretty good.
I think it's pretty good.
Shanna Kand.
Shanna Kand.
Let's call it Tedward or Ernest.
EW3.
EW3.
Or shorts.
We'll call it shorts.
Keith Pelly, bitch.
Oh, yeah, no.
Shorts.
Shorts.
King Keith.
King Keith.
Oh, I don't think he'd like that.
I don't think so.
Pants Pelly.
no pants dance no pants pelly no pants so so listen no no what what you're saying about the
organization we can argue about where they allocate the money and they've always been
willing to put the money into it yeah it's just a matter of what they do with the money has been
very questionable sure yeah 100 and their loyalty to the people that decide that and and propose
that has been questionable but regardless jesse when we talk about this press conference i think
you know he there were some tfc and raptors questions we already referenced those uh i
thought the most interesting part of this press conference and maybe it's just because we are both
is the rap battle is the the rap battle was crazy it was crazy uh no it was uh it was um
when he said we need to do a better job of embracing the fans and the media
and I thought that was fascinating because obviously this man has a media background he
helped to build you know CFL at TSN and then was Rogers Media and like this he's had a pretty great
career and the more the fans less the media we can talk about the media thing in a second but
it's just less interesting you know he talked about fan zone where you know people are going
to be starting they're going to start to give away 150 200 tickets every game to get he said
most of the people we have signed up from there have never been in the arena that's the first time
i've heard an mlse ceo to the public say yeah uh we got a bit of a pricing issue and people can't
get in fans can't get in like i mean at the end of the day they are running a business but you're
also running a pro sports team you have to build fans for the next generation and the next gen game
being priced at the same price as everybody else's.
I've said it for years.
Maple Leaf Sports would be super smart if they did this one thing.
Take five games back from the season ticket holders,
credit them their money back, make every ticket $15,
and have a lottery.
My wife and I brought our son to his first NHL game.
For the three of us to go, it cost us two car payments.
That's not a joke.
It's crazy.
That's not, like, I'm not, what, but that is, no,
literally two car payments.
it's not two months yeah yeah of car payment so this is my this is so what i thought i'm like
okay and the other thing is with the media side uh maple leaf sports you know candidly has been
good to us this season they let us in uh we don't get any interviews with any players that's not
don't even ask because you're not getting it uh we don't get any interviews like when when kyle
Dubas would do interviews if he had a press day he would do press conference here then he would
do TSN and Sportsnet and that is it there's and I think that there is like and I listen I know we're
not on TSN and Sportsnet's level I'm not trying but to say that we're not a legitimate media outlet
they obviously see us as one well I know there was a media outlet that would send a reporter to
the games who didn't know who the players were and and they are a traditional media outlet yeah
and that's frustrating for us to hear yes and that's that's not the leafs it's a it's a legacy
thing it's a media thing yeah we're gonna give it to newspaper because we always have not because
we should yeah and i'm not saying newspaper shouldn't but i'm like give it to the people that
are really invested no no i support newspaper i support news i support media but you don't you
don't know who the players are sorry to get you out of bed yeah like to to do your job today like
I'm not talking about they've never met the players, they've never spoken to them, but did not know who they were to see them.
That's crazy.
Yeah.
And we need the new guard in there.
And yeah, that serves us.
That serves us just fine because we are the new guard or part of it.
But that's absurd.
Yeah.
It's us and others.
I'm not just saying us.
And others, yes.
I do think that there needs to be, it's a very tightly controlled environment.
Like, Jesse, you guys have to request players after the game, right?
Yeah, yeah.
make your request for which players to talk like that's how it works i think
you know i do think that there there probably should be a little bit more
um you know they don't have a whole lot of like season ticket fan access events they don't do
that um they have unless you want to pay for it and pay significant money for like a black tie
dinner like these things the fan outreach needs to change yeah and that's why that's why he brought
up the fan access program that they started like a month ago now where you can sign up for it and
it hasn't gotten really fully underway yet because it's just starting and we'll see what they do with
that but i i think it's a it's a great point to bring up like the amount of fans who never get
to go to the arena it's we we were at a sports media business conference down in in london
earlier in the what was that in january yeah late in january and one of the speakers there
talked about how i think it was like a 60 of fans like never see the team play live in their
lifetime like it's i believe it they don't there's so many least fans who just don't have access to
the building into the rink and it's about reaching those people in different ways yes yep agreed and
they're gonna have to do when i say they're gonna have to do a better job what what they're doing
is a one out of ten like they i'm sorry and i listen with with regard to what with fan outreach
Fan outreach, yeah.
Fan outreach, treatment of season ticket holders,
treatment of single-game ticket holders.
That needs to get better, and it needs to get better now.
Aren't the season ticket holders the businesses, though?
Not all of them.
No, not all of them.
Okay, I'll just tell you anecdotally.
Okay.
Oh, I love an anecdote.
I had somebody approach me in the grocery store yesterday.
Okay.
Or was it two days ago?
It was yesterday.
And Adam said, how dare you say that?
And take me aside for 20 minutes.
And she is a season ticket holder, not from a wealthy background, built her own business
up and is not one of, like, she's not in the lower bowl spending a bazillion dollars.
She's way up there.
She's just a hardworking person who's like, you know what?
Instead of going on a vacation this year, I'm buying Leaf Seasons tickets.
All right.
And she was like, and she's talked about some of her friends and that sort of thing.
There is growing animosity.
And I reached out to some other people that I know who are season ticket holders just
to verify this a little bit.
and they all said and had the same uh uh things to say and i i'm actually gonna make a video of it
so that way okay that way i can go through and go here are the issues that some of them have
identified and but for instance when we were in san jose just to give you another a piece right
we were recording in the arena a team that needs you a team that needs you we were recording in
the arena during what guys what was happening in the background oh uh it was um it was like a like
a fan day like all the fans were on the ice for who activities for sharks fans season ticket holders
and you know what the sharks players were doing they were playing games with the kids they were
interacting with them you could take pictures on the ice next to the marlo and thornton numbers
next to the shark head that was so cool there is like they are going hey how do we get you
how do we get you back because you know renewals matter and yes leafs are like uh we could simply
not care but like and so they Leafs need to I'm glad that Keith mentioned that because I do think
it's it's it's not a little work they got to do they got to do a lot of work if it's if Leafs
nation is truly special if Leafs nation is truly unique which it is you know the real NHL versus
not why are Leaf fans not treated that way so here's here's what I would need to dig on
because the Leafs do obviously do lots of stuff yeah every team does lots of stuff
are the leafs doing less than other teams is what i would like to figure yes it's like they're doing
they do the outdoor practice which is really fun i know they do that's not for season ticket
holders but yes that's for everybody they do the the easter seal skate again i know it's not season
ticket holders they they go to sick kids but like all professional sports teams like visit
hospitals they all do that and take part in charitable and that's great charitable initiative
keep doing that yes you need to it's not just about what the players do you're mentioning
shit the players do yes i'm not asking for that like like it's it comes down to like how much
money it costs to transfer tickets to a friend uh i'm talking about like there are and and there is
you can't just hand tickets no and they're and also isn't that nuts yeah this thing is that and
they're so they don't get to keep the tickets anymore which they're upset about too oh or you
can um pay what was it the islanders or someone else yeah you $40 oh for the ov night to get your
own copy what are you talking about i have the ticket i bought one no you don't oh my god you're
criminals yeah so i think i think slowly like keith belly he just got here he's been here for
a year so we're seeing some of that slowly change and i think the fan access program we'll see how
it plays out but that's something cool that they're starting you know and trying to get in
into the faces and in front of the faces of fans and they also had during the playoffs the
leafs twitter belt i don't know if you guys saw that but i did see that they had nice they had
the least twitter belt where they'd have different members of leafs twitter have the like the game
belt they give out in the locker room and they'd pass it along to another member of least twitter
so i think slowly they're trying to do that but it needs uh needs a lot of change i liked i like
that they did that that's great keep keep you know let's let's let's bridge the gap here leaf
fans are clearly mad at the organization right now maybe some outreach is required and this is
the thing and this is what i keep hearing from people is you know i know say sport check who
were you know we're in their studio right now sport check is a sponsor of the maple leafs they're a
client uh so is so many other companies right a million so are the fans uh-huh fans are clients
fans are clients and i think recently fans have been treated as a pain in the ass
and i think that is going to change with keith pelly he's he's a hundred don't come to our game
yeah yeah oh no come to the game but we we're not gonna like it uh yeah and like listen some
fans screw it up for people i totally understand oh yeah there are a-hole fans for sure i please
don't make leaf fans right on the chalkboard i will not throw beer on the ice because one guy
did it i will not throw jerseys on the ice because fuck off i saw a tick talk about one of the jerseys
and it looked like it was a Panthers fan who did a jersey thing
and got a Leafs fan to do it for like $100 or something like that.
Yeah, exactly.
There's people who do this just purely clout-facing.
Just assholes.
Yeah, just assholes.
And no, you know how there's millions of Leaf fans?
No, it's all of them.
You're an asshole.
You're a fucking stupid person if you think that.
One thing that the Leafs, I think, should definitely do
is improve their game ops a little.
There was a lot of complaints about that, too.
experience is like i because i've been to other arenas and like something like vegas like they're
so next level with what they do in terms of their game ops and i went to it was like 37 home games
plus all the playoff games this year a lot of it's just plug and play and they can do a really
a lot better job with their in arena experience something i actually can't attend the game so i
asked multiple people at multiple different age ranges one of the things the feedback i got was
the noise the music is so loud yes like somebody that i know that has a kid is like i i have to
bring like and this kid is yeah because they're so if you're in the 300s anywhere near any of
those speakers there that they have there it's deafening like it's it's so loud that isn't going
to make the crowd louder no they they blast the music to this next level degree it's it's a lot
It's a lot.
You've got to find ways to get people on their feet and create a culture of,
like somebody said to me the other day, they're like, go Leafs go as a chant.
Wasn't it me?
It's not the greatest chant in the world.
It's not.
It kind of dies.
And you hear it in the, go Leafs go.
You start to feel like an asshole.
Asking people to chant it.
No, no, like you do it in your section and you're like,
people are going to start looking at me funny.
What are you doing?
Cheer.
They gotta create
It's on the Leafs to create that atmosphere
Because they don't have it right
And I'm not saying Go Leafs Go can't work
But like right now it just kind of dies on the vine
Every time
I'd be inviting Hockey Illuminati
Like yeah can you sage the room
After every loss
He's been really funny man
He's been so funny
Getting his Nona to get rid of the Maloik
From Joseph Wall
So great
So good
like there's so many like listen i know so many great content creators in the area too
yeah there's so many people who are over the top i do not expect any of this shit i i want it for
people like that well they put austin alexander out and the thing is he was the i think he was
like the making sure his his job was like to make sure that you were cheering loud enough in the in
the pit down here that's fine oh yeah and he was dressed like a cop like like cheer police as in
keep cheering nice and it was funny right like he can pull that off yes you know there's a sense of
humor coming out, which is good because the Leafs were like
anti-sense of humor.
Their social media is like, here's the score.
Here's the players that are playing.
Here's the charity. Here's
the blueprint. And then it's no
jokes ever. No chirping
other teams. The Leafs do a much better job
game to game in the
square here for these fans. It's amazing
than the atmosphere in the arena.
Yeah, because they're dealing with fans.
The atmosphere out there in the square is
electric. You know what percentage
of people in the square are fans?
100 yes you know what percent of the people in the building are fans not a hundred no you know
be cool is if you're signed up to be a fan in there right and they say it's 3 000 people allowed
just in the main square here but then there's obviously overflow that goes back blocks right
so during the playoffs here's what i would do uh i got i got 3 000 people i got access to her nuts
half of you are getting a ticket to the game damn right how so but then but then it's going
to be half full well that no but then you have overflow and then you can be on the wait list and
send them in but then you just get people who are like i'm just going because i can try and
get free tickets 100 but they're loud and crazy yeah we can easily the the issue is fixing the
problem without lighting so much money on fire yeah like that's that's what they're looking at
and they're trying to figure out and if push comes to shove money wins yeah but you're you're at a
place where like leaf fans need to feel like you care about them yes two and five canadians will
hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th

we're ready with a whole world and more and and so you know keith wouldn't comment too much you
know on player personnel changes John Tavares Mitch Marner brought up by name uh he said that's
a Brad question and Brad's you know in Calgary watching his daughter graduate okay so I heard
him say that the only problem I had with him saying that is Brad speaking we don't have any
confirmation we don't know yet I'm not asking him to speak today he's got a family that's fine
when's he talking I think next week his this should have been his press conference with
Keith Pelley it should be both of them up there
they are going to have dinner
on Sunday which is information Keith Pelley
gave the audience in the stream
I would like to be there too
so I assume
if it's going to happen it will be sometime next week
but there's also TBA
he's going to talk he has to talk
at some point but I don't know how soon
I would think next week
I'm sure the Leafs are probably like you know what
we're going to make them wait
because we need to figure ourselves out too
and it's been a lot of change this week right i i think like the brad piece is very interesting
because he's essentially the president like he doesn't get the title and the pay raise but now
he's in charge he has more power now and i assume perube by just the the way it's flowing down will
also have more power you know he'll be the one talking to brad about everything but like brad's
now the guy he doesn't have to report to anybody about the hockey decisions with brendan there
you got to talk to him about the hockey decisions he's a hockey guy and think of how frustrating
that must have been for brad who has been an executive for a very long time brendan shanahan
went straight from the nhl to president of the leafs and brad's like yeah i was talking to this
guy and that guy and that guy and brendan shanahan's like well you know what i think
if if you're brad how do you not go well he has uh he had a decade of experience by the time he
was working with bradger living right like he did the job for 10 years still more experienced
right but it's not like brendan's new to that no what i'm saying wait he's brand spanking new when
he started and then he got a decade of experience to talk to bradger living the more experience he
got the worse he got like he was great at the beginning he was great when he didn't know shit
you know what maybe we're on to something are you can we hire george peros is he free
Are you guys happy that Bradshaw Living has more power,
and are you confident in Bradshaw Living having more say over what goes on?
Yes.
Yes, he's an experienced general manager.
You have a general manager to make hockey decisions.
Let him make hockey decisions.
I don't give a shit what the president says.
People said to me when I tweeted that out yesterday that I was happy
because I thought he had done a good job.
People were like, well, how do you explain Klingberg?
Are we still on that?
How do you explain Reeves?
You notice he's in the Final Four?
How do you explain Kampf?
By the way, Kampf was basically,
Shani said to sign him.
And Brad was like,
okay, I guess I will.
Like, we still...
But the point I'm trying to make is,
like, listen,
I get that maybe his first free agency
summer here wasn't great, okay?
It wasn't.
I didn't mind.
Once they figured out
Bertuzzi-Domi with Matthews,
I thought that was a great line.
Klingberg was dead on arrival
with his hip, like he was.
And then he went on LTIR.
yeah it also cost the leafs nothing but like nothing a couple popcorn sales yeah like they
it was just money that they pissed into the wind but like who gives a shit it's mls and people were
like listen you know you have like six million dollars sitting in the press box uh and when
yeah it doesn't matter buddy you can't listen reeves already sent down not against the cap
it's the playoffs by the way also doesn't freaking matter there's no cap in the playoffs
Confess sitting.
Okay, fine.
Maybe that wasn't the greatest contract of all time.
Because of the core, because of the core of this team.
You have to spend every dollar.
Perfectly.
Perfectly.
And weirdly, they literally never not once accomplished that with any executive in charge.
But guys, Yanni Hakenpah only played two games and they just threw up 1.5 million bucks at him.
Yeah, and that becomes free money because he's on LTIR all season.
Wow, that's the best practice.
But they can't accumulate money against the cap
and make the money bigger at the trade guys.
No, that doesn't matter.
To me, I'm like, we are debating.
The Titanic sunk, and we're worried about what faucet they were using.
It's crazy.
It's pro sports, and there's too many humans involved
for everything to be perfect.
there were four main humans taking up half of the cap that was the mistake you need to have some
do you think the florida panthers are perfect everything they've done they just nailed
the oilers the oilers the oilers the stars no the who's left carolina carolina and everything
they've done this is sort of like a rebuild year for them you think everything every team
every cup winner has done is friggin perfect that's not how it works there's a lot of luck
involved but also you need flexibility for mistakes and the Leafs had none this is exactly
the point right so like when we talk about oh how are you going to replace 100 points and Mitch
Marner and all the defense you can't so so let's just start there so so what do you do what did
What did Billy Bean do in Moneyball, your favorite movie?
He turned down a job with the Red Sox, and he shouldn't have.
No, at the beginning.
How are we going to replace Giambi?
What's he say?
In the aggregate?
Right.
You're going to have to have guys.
One of these days, you guys got to stop quoting Moneyball.
Which apparently isn't even accurate.
No, it's probably not totally accurate.
I like it, though.
My point is, Anthony Petrelli in his article was like,
listen, we needed the Leafs top four or top six to do great
because their bottom six is not as good as Florida's,
and they get caved.
And wouldn't it be interesting if the top six was still pretty damn good
and the bottom six was also good?
Yes, you can do that.
You can make that a thing that you do.
They can do that.
Yes, 100%.
And also, at the beginning of the season, I said,
hey, Matthew scored 69 goals and they finished third.
What happens if he doesn't?
What happens?
My scenario that I laid out is what if he only scores 50?
Now you've got to make up 19 goals.
They ended up having to make up – what did he have this year, 30?
Yeah.
They had to make up 39 goals.
They won the division.
It was such a great just math point by you.
Yes, thank you.
This is how much they scored.
This is what we could possibly lose from Austin.
Where do they make up those goals?
And they were still mid.
They got 69 goals and were still mid in the context of the division,
and they found a way to win.
so and yeah yeah he finished with 33 33 there you go so they had to make a friggin a lot yeah
mitch marner was a big part of that he was out of his mind he was amazing he was out of his mind he
was very good it was the best season of his life so what do you need you need matthews to be better
you need nize to be better you need your bottom six to be relevant like they weren't even relevant
offensively really most nights when you've got dallas like sam steel and evgeny daddinoff scoring
goals for dallas ben's like taking shifts on their fourth line like he's a free agent he sure is
you know uh you need some offense from your d wouldn't that help and you need some saves like
every good team you need regarding the the money thing and wasting it steve do you know how to
shift on one foot uh from your outside blade to your inside blade uh no not really no if i asked
to go do a one-foot glide.
They call it in skating class, you do a one-foot glide.
But you've got to go on your outside edge
and then your inside edge.
Can you do that?
Maybe.
I'll probably follow a couple times.
I watched Yanni Hockenpah do that damn drill
a hundred times this season.
I went to a lot of morning skates and a lot of practices.
And this man is so good at his edge work.
Man, he does not look comfortable.
Well, he's just working on it.
He's being a little light on his feet,
but he was just so good at going on his inside edge
and his outside edge,
and then he would do this backwards.
So right now, everybody listening,
I have video of him at practice doing inside and outside,
and then he would do the same thing,
but backwards and going along the ice.
He was really good at it.
Okay, great.
And then he never played hockey for this team,
outside of two games.
Never. He skated so much.
He skated so much.
Expert practicer.
He nailed it at practice every time.
Jesse, I sent you a picture if you can bring it up.
It's the, it's great.
Is it?
It's a poster that's great.
Don't look at it, Steve.
Okay, should I take my glasses off?
Take it off because I want Jesse to put them.
Jesse will let you know.
Oh, I like that.
Yeah, do I look great?
A lot of people do that with their glasses.
Is that comfortable?
Who does that?
I feel like it would always fall.
Oh, this bothers me.
I said this on the stream.
What?
I said this on the stream.
Berube's glasses?
Wait, did I not say it on the show?
You said it on the stream.
I said it.
Craig Berube, adjust your glasses.
Get looser glasses.
Every game, I see you like with crazy dents in the side of his head
from his glasses that are obviously way too tight,
and he's not wearing them.
We got big heads, man.
You know what this is like.
I know.
And what did I do?
I got bigger glasses that are loose.
Don't wear your glasses there.
all right put them on now all right on the screen yeah
where is this that is outside the long goes here and i took that picture after game one
oh why did they make that who made that call no that's real that's outside there's a reeves one
Yeah.
Hawkenpah?
It's a Yachty Hawkenpah 2025 playoffs poster.
I get Reeves.
He played.
What?
Why Hawkenpah?
Where is this?
It's the Longos.
The Longos.
It's down over there.
Yeah, I don't think.
Yeah, you won't see it here.
The Willie one is the one that's outside of here.
Yeah.
And there's a Morgan one right over there.
Somebody made a mistake making that.
He's on the team.
Okay.
They haven't taken these down yet.
I want that.
Matty.
I want it.
Yeah, that's mine.
Maddie. No, no, no. I want it to give to Maddie
on her birthday. Do you still
want a Yanni Hockenpah jersey?
Yeah. Okay. Next episode.
Alright, sweet. Next episode, we will
hand you a Yanni Hockenpah jersey.
Is he on the team next year? I don't
think so. I... no.
Then I probably don't. Honestly, I feel like
he owes the Leafs money. Yeah.
He played two games for them, and they
basically rehabilitated his leg for
a year. Man, Steve Simmons
got so much shit for saying,
I heard that he can't play.
He was probably right.
He nailed that one.
With apologies to Steven.
Yep.
Whoops.
Whoops.
Made a mistake.
Made a mistake.
I was like, no, they wouldn't do that.
And then the more the summer dragged on, I'm like, this is odd.
And then he played two games.
So the Leafs now, we're waiting to hear from True Living, right?
That's what it is.
So now, do you guys have anything else on the Leafs you want to touch on?
Or can we get to Oilers stars?
I think they can improve fan outreach
by giving me a million dollars
and then you get a phone call hey bitch
it's shorts
if he gives me a million
dollars I'll be like hey Keith it's bitch
the only thing with the Leafs is
next up is just Mitch
Marner conversations for four weeks
I think it's unnecessary
is that what we're doing?
Let me keep it short for you.
As of now, he doesn't want to be here.
As of now.
That can always change, but as of now, I wouldn't bet on it.
No.
That's what's being filtered through.
He doesn't want to be here, and it's not because –
don't take it personally.
Don't boo him the next time he comes through Toronto.
Oh, Adam.
Oh, Adam.
We're well past that.
Oh, Adam.
You naive little boy.
I know.
I know it's going to happen, but he's going.
Okay, so let's – instead of having the will-he-won't-he,
because he's not going to.
Why don't we have the what else could they do?
And that's what I want to do.
That's the conversation.
I'm making a video about that this weekend, actually.
Sidney Crosby, next question.
Sidney Crosby, that's right.
Sidney Crosby, Nathan McKinnon, boom.
Boom.
Let's get to the Oilers and Stars.
The Oilers took a 3-1 lead.
We found our 2C.
Took a 3-1 lead into the third period.
And as Leaf fans can relate, could not get a P.
First off, they kept taking penalties,
and they could not stop the Dallas Stars power play.
And Stuart Skinner is either a sub-835 save percentage
in this postseason, or he gets a shutout.
See, it's early in the series.
There's no in-between.
Welcome to early series, Stuart Skinner.
The Oilers, I thought, devastated the Stars
for the first two periods of that game.
Like, I thought they were clearly the superior team.
They, I think it was Kulak's second penalty of the game
at the end of the second, and they score.
And so they're back in the game.
Corey Perry cross-checked a man in the face.
Like, some people are like, oh, man, how do you get that many straight penalties
by committing an abundance of infractions?
They cross-checked the guy in the face.
And then moments later, Evander Kane high-sticked Matt Duchesne.
And at the time, from the angle that I saw, I was like,
I don't know if he actually got him.
And then you see the angle.
Yeah, he clearly got him.
Yeah.
And they scored on all three.
They committed infractions that the referees have to call.
Unforced errors, would you say?
Yeah.
Very much.
When you get to the playoffs, we watched the Panthers play hockey.
You can do a lot of things and not get called.
And the Edmonton Oilers lost their cool and were like,
okay, we're just going to do this.
And the refs have no choice but to call it.
And the Dallas Stars are deadly on the power play.
Deadly.
Granland is growing on me like a vine.
That was the entire difference in the Jets series.
Like, if you just had the whole series play at 5-on-5, the Jets might be in the conference finals right now.
But the power play exists, and these Dallas Stars do not let you get by when you commit a penalty.
Like, it's allowed.
Yeah.
It's allowed.
Canada, 2014, Sochi, Marie-Philippe Poulin, she scores the golden goal.
Canada had a 5-on-3.
Like, I'm sure a lot of Americans are like, yeah, we know.
But, like, it's a thing.
It's a thing that happens, and it might cost you the game,
and it might cost you more than that.
Now, the McDavid-Drysaddle look at each other at the end of the game.
I think if you're Dallas' defense, you should be worried a little bit.
Oh, my God.
Because they're coming.
Oh, my God.
That look that they had to each other, it was sort of like, mm-hmm.
McDavid had so many dazzling plays.
I look at those two guys, and I'm like, you guys are the peak of everything.
They're amazing, aren't they?
You're so frigging cool.
I wish my guys had that kind of look.
They had I'm going to kill you.
How can you not look at that stuff and be like,
that's what pro sports is all about.
You guys coming back and getting this series back to even.
Over under 4.5 points combined tonight for those two.
4.5?
Combined?
Combined.
I'll take the over.
Oh, I'll take over on that.
And I love Dallas.
I think they're frigging unreal.
Again, I think Dallas might be the best normal hockey team left in the playoffs.
Yeah.
But they're playing aliens, like the hardest team to evaluate.
I couldn't imagine myself betting on an Oilers game.
What are you getting?
Live betting, yes, but before the game being definitively they are going to win or they're going to lose.
I have no idea.
Are you looking at any of those goals and saying if Stuart Skinner has it, it's a different game?
It was a couple nights ago.
Granlund's one is a piss missile.
Uh, Dushane's is a bit of a tire fire.
I'm trying to remember them all, man.
You maybe like a save on the Sam steel one to, to give them a two goal lead.
But like, that was an unreal move from a guy who, man, they've, the Dallas
stars have taxed Sam steel with doing a lot for them defensively.
And if he's able to hold a fort, they'll win the series.
But I don't know.
Yeah.
Dallas.
I mean, sorry.
It's Edmonton, man.
Yeah.
It's going to be, it's going to be, tonight's going to be fun.

I have done two Canes and Panthers games,
and they've both been fun in an unsuspecting way.
The Canes are now boring in the way that they're losing,
and they're getting their asses kicked.
Their fans chanted, shoot the puck, and booed them after one.
Is that helpful?
I don't think it's meant to be too.
I don't think it's to be helpful.
Yes.
Fucked up my own phrase.
By the way, we have a lot of Cats fans in the chat, and one of them, his name is Jose Pantalone, also known as Joey Pants.
Oh, yeah.
So every time he comments, I'm like, Jose Pantalone.
uh but that guy sounds like every guy from florida absolutely absolutely he's he's wicked
but i gotta ask about so the the canes have allowed okay they allowed six goals the entire
second round okay they've allowed they've allowed 11 in the first two and i don't even blame freddie
for most of them last night kachekov let one in freddie there was one freddie i'm like probably
should have had that but the canes defense are literally letting the florida panthers just
walk straight to the net yeah and then and then what they do they make a cross crease pass goal
that's it they'll do they'll do it from behind the net they'll do it in front of that they'll
do whatever you want whatever you want to do to the canes defense you can do it right now if you
just view the florida panthers as a goon squad they will kill you and i tried to say that at
the beginning of the leaf series they are a tough team they are an exhausting team but if you make
it a speed and finesse game they can kill you that way too apparently uh somebody in the comment
section said j fresh had to take that like rod's broad brendamore system so exhausting to play
that the guys might just be exhausted but i was like they had a week off like no that's not true
and that doesn't make much stop it also doesn't help by the way that rod doesn't adjust and i know
i know it's a rebuild year kind of for the canes let's be honest like you don't have niches you
don't have Drury you got Stankoven who's 5'8 against the Panthers you're in the final you're
in the conference final uh and and you know uh they're gonna have a bunch of cap space to spend
this summer they got great draft capital like good for them right so I was kind of saying like okay
and this isn't a video I posted last night is there a world where if they get swept you talk
about Rod Brendamore losing his job because I look at some of the player lineup decisions and
And I'm like, yo, you guys seriously are going into the playoffs
and into a series against the Panthers with Jordan Stahl as your 3C.
He just doesn't look like he can compete in this series.
And maybe that's the Panthers being that good.
They make players look slow.
But whoa.
They make players look slow.
Whoa.
It's crazy.
And I'm not trying to pick on the guys at the end of his career or whatever,
but, like, dude, this is a tough watch for the Canes.
like you mentioned stankoven like that that guy's got a lot of fight in them but like the panthers
are gonna run over a team with guys like stankoven cockney emmy and like they're just they would have
been the second toughest team in a series against toronto you're going in against florida like i
just i'm trying to picture how they can do this right edmonton loses game one of their game
against Dallas, so I have no problem envisioning
how they might do this. Actually, they
showed us in the first two periods how
they might do this, how they might pull this off.
I can't picture it.
And Svechnikov, in two consecutive
games, has taken penalties, punching
Brady Kachuk in the
back of the head.
Who did? Svechnikov's done it twice,
and he's taken two penalties for it.
There's things you can do. He hit Kachuk
into the bench and then went wham last night,
and it's like, well, the wham is what got you.
well and chuck's again like he's clearly playing hurt yep but he's being effective by being an
asshole he's great at it he's so good it comes naturally also had great setups last night he
was great that second i thought that second line was going to be the line that carolina could
handle the bennett uh kachuk line and uh not only is the lusterine and marshan line running wild
but the bennett and kachuk line have come back to life after the leaf series and barkov scored
last night and nobody can tell you how do you i don't i just don't know what the plan is like i
love to sit here and try to be productive about this i don't know what the plan is and people
are like well what jaylen chatfield's jaylen chatfield is not going to be the difference
in this series i mean he's great but everything helps i don't know steve the problem i have
is that and i think a lot of canes fans were commiserating with me and after the stream
last night is i don't know where the life is you look at like what line where it's what line is
working what line has an edge none of them and like ajo's not a big guy either and again it's
not about the size but like sometimes it is the panthers oh and and they took out seth jarvis
yeah and he's back he played but he played again no he did he came right back but what percent
well and and sam reinhardt might miss the rest of the series we don't know yet because of a hit
yeah so he so the reason they hit seth jarvis oh seth jarvis was hit away from the play because
uh was it seth that that basically it was a it was a really quick play when you see it in slow
motion it looks bad but the reality is it at full speed you didn't notice it but essentially
one of the canes hit reinhardt in the side of the leg and his leg went in oh i think uh and they
were i don't know if chuck's like i'm gonna kill you we might be giving sebastian ajo too much of
a pass here on the hit because he does have a history of doing this oh does he um it's not the
first time i can bring up the other instance where he did it but it's if you missed it um
was it two nights ago now last night was the game last night yes i don't know what day it was like
during the playoffs like every day is the same yes like there's hockey on every night we're doing
shows all the time everything blends together i don't know what day it is definitely been like
what day of the week is it friday and my wife's like it's monday it's like 4 30 right now i i'm
like what i feel like it's dude i gotta go home and do the stream yeah because at some point at
some point it becomes irrelevant what day it is yeah it's like i gotta wake up and go to
leave press conference i'm working today same day let me leave guys i gotta go i got a freaking
job to do so aho lands this hit on rye heart which takes him out of the game and maybe the series and
who knows for how long you'll see it here steve he comes across and he hits him right you can see
it there it's ugly yeah and what became clear jesse is that a lot of the panthers didn't see
that when it happened and then they saw the replay at intermission and they came out and
they're like we're gonna kill you so it what it looks like is he hip checks him in the thigh
and this one doesn't have the other angle and his skate might have been dug in enough
oh where because he oh yeah yep that's the screenshot yep i don't know so like oh a lot
of stuff is uh not going in the right direction there he skated off on his own yeah he got to the
bench was like right over there right he got over there so his skate must have been dug in yeah i'm
gonna pull another angle um and just show you the full hit on from maho because i don't know it
looked a little dirty to me oh shit it's a little dirty no question but i can also see how in in
transit that that that can happen okay here's the other angle this is the one i was looking for
are you throwing it on screen yeah yeah it's coming up okay there you go all right so there's
aho he's not looking see no he does no no no no reinhardt oh yes yes yes i saw some defense
being like aho didn't know no he knew he knew he knew he knew but but the panthers hit them
yeah that's ugly look at that leg like he hit him right low and you and you can't oh fuck
oh my god he plays tonight that's a mirror or tomorrow that's no i think he's done for a little
bit here oh fuck no and and i i i don't think this is a matter of you know sometimes a player will
like leap out of the way and they leave themselves in a vulnerable position i don't think that's what
happened he was going for a body check and he reinhardt he hit him right in the spot where
his leg gets hyper you know how in the wrong you got to be for me to stand up for the panthers
for the second straight game i'm saying this and they're pissed fuck they're pissed oh that looks
awful so oh shit so like i i'm not i'm not i don't think there's any discipline to be done there
um but uh Mark Stone didn't get disciplined for if you go back and watch Mark Stone injuring
Miro Haskin in this season I don't know what they would have suspended him for but there should be
a category that is what the fuck are you doing he just dove at Haskin's knee headfirst it was
really weird so this was brought to the attention of uh the people on the hockey twitters because
this isn't the first time that sebastian ajo has been in an incident like this he hit adam fox in
the 2023 season in a similar i don't know if it's similar way but uh no i think it was in the regular
season at some point okay um and he goes low on him and hyperextend and hits him right now
whoa so i don't know if it's history enough that he's done it before but it's an ugly knee on knee
from aho on fox but see what i mean though like fox is at least trying to evade this hit and yeah
he does get him in a really unfortunate spot but he's trying to evade this hit reinhardt is just
standing there and gets he's not standing there he's flying they're going fast yeah that's
important what you saw this is that looks like an uppercase k yeah but that aho hit happened in
at full speed yeah like i do need to it is worth mentioning right and and that's why i said like
i don't know that he he did injure him and he did hit him in the wrong spot whether he meant to or
not i i don't know if we can determine intent based on that no this is the thing with the
panthers though is if you injure one of their guys they'll kill you they will injure you back
um like uh brandon hagel took out barkov and hagel after the season was complaining
that it you know if eckblad asked me to go i would have gone him that's that's not how the
florida panthers payment system works you will i'm going to fuck you up and ekblad got suspended
for it yeah but it took hagel out of the series i don't think ekblad or the panthers regret that
decision um and also ekblad has been doing it ever since yep and it's been fine he's done that at
least two more times in these playoffs and it's been totally fine yeah um can i just talk about
the Gustav Forslund goal for a second yeah for half a second because oh man the first goal of
the game which happens it was like a minute and something in it it speaks to me like Carolina's
not a bad team the other team they're playing is just better you know I think Florida is just such
a good team right now and they're playing at this next level that I don't know if anybody's gonna
beat them in this playoffs so we had Matthew Kachuk behind the net he wins a little board
battle there he sends the puck up the side of the boards and he gives up possession yes Carolina
gets possession out of this after matthew kachuk wins the the battle zone they're still showing
the roster on the score yeah that's how early on i barely got into it and they're like oh and
they've scored it's 1850 on the clock here but the reason this goal happens is after matthew
kachuk gives up possession after winning a board battle carolina gets it and forsling decides
I'm going to be the most relentless player on the puck that's ever existed.
I heard Steve say I look injured, and I'm going to make him look like a dick.
He creates his own damn goal here.
So Carolina gets the puck.
This is Forsling here.
Who's the Carolina player?
I don't remember who had the puck there.
I can't see his number right now.
So Forsling looks at that, and he says, I'm going to go deep in my own zone.
I'm going to pinch.
I'm going to attack the puck.
I'm going to keep attacking the puck.
I'm going to keep attacking the puck.
no matter where he's going it's fetching it's fetching it off 37 there he turned around
shveshnikov has it and eventually i'm gonna have a teammate get there help me this is gonna release
the puck another panther is gonna be right there to win it and forsling gets the puck back and he
scores this goal here his shot a snapshot and it goes off of or lovin in his shot is so lethal and
he and he takes the shot like adam said he gets a great bounce off of a carolina defender that's him
and by the way that's the team that waved him oh yeah i didn't think about that but what's up
maddie i'm sorry oh yep muddy i just want to say plays like this drive me up the wall because my
coach in hockey growing up always told me never stick handle in your own zone oh yeah never on
your own for more than like two seconds if you're not getting into someone you've got to get rid of
that puck yeah like you've got to drive it up stretch in that in that situation needs to get
rid of that puck quicker. And it's on Forsling
who's like, I'm just going to attack the puck
carrier and force him to make a mistake.
And that's Andres Fresnico.
Forsling forechecks harder than
any of the Carolina Hurricanes forwards.
Did you call him Scorsling? Forsling, but he should be Scorsling.
He should be called Scorsling.
Did we come up with that by accident?
Yeah, we did. I thought I heard you say Scorsling.
I like that a lot. I think it's important
that we
point that out, is that clearly
he's paying attention to what the forwards have done.
And he goes, I'm going to do that too.
if i'm gonna pinch i'm gonna act like a forward oh yeah he can do that because he has support
yeah this is a guy in his own zone who's the d who's like you know what yeah forget going back
right now just protecting my own net i'm gonna go at andre schlesinger who's gonna do a little
circle back in the wrong area and my teammates gonna pick up the puck and then i'm gonna get
it back and snap a shot that goes home like and it's ridiculous think of that mentally so you
lose game one and you get your ass kicked in game one and the stat starts going around oh they're
oh and 13 in the third round since 2009 which is such a bizarre stat it's an insane stat you have
to be such a unique blend of good and bad to have that stat be true and a minute was it 17 it scores
at 18 43 and it's at home every player on the ice every player on the bench every fan in the
building those that had been in their seats they might not have even made it to the building yet
uh how are you not just completely and utterly demoralized by that and the panthers feed on
that shit and you're dead they know when you're so a couple things verhage is a problem two goals
last he was unbelievable he did not have a great season and he got better and better and better as
the toronto series went and here he is sam bennett who is notably a free agent this summer uh has
nine goals in these playoffs how many of them have been on the road nine eight bullshit okay
so i asked this question last night let's say the panthers win the cup yep there's obviously a lot
of hockey that needs to be played uh but let's say they win the cup tomorrow which they can't
let's say they win the cup tomorrow because they they just bring the trophy and they go surprise
in edmonton and dallas they're really the phil pritchard yeah phil pritchard walks in he says
it's over hammered by the way he's just like blackout drunk i wore shorts today a man called
me a bitch and gave me a high five hey fuck off mac masters so here we go um who wins the con
smith on the panthers yeah uh sam bennett i don't think he finishes lower than third in that race
like there's bob i don't think bob bob's been good but i think that's the default boring answer
that frankly is not true he hasn't been a world no no his team has made it easy for yeah like he
has not been a world beater but like has like has barkov been that i think i think bennett's
mine the number one answer right like maybe marshan in there marshan's been very good
like marshan because it's fun but i think bennett's been if you want to be a difficult
nerd do you go with seth jones no you're not going to be a difficult i like mcdavid yeah like
i think on the last year i might go with sam bennett and you know there was the report today
like oh yeah he wants 10 mil and i know a lot of people think that's ridiculous and you probably
shouldn't pay him that.
If he wins a Conn Smythe, I think someone would be like,
I'll do it. 10 mil is
9 mil to the Panthers. Yep.
That's how it always works. 9 mil?
How are they going to hand out 7.5 mil?
3 million!
3 million for
free?
Deferred free?
Who was the player we used to
occasionally make fun of when he
said he'd play for free?
Pasternak.
He signed a big extension and he's like, I would've done this
for free we're like okay over 11 million dollars yeah i always find that comical the list of
seasons where he has played for free is still zero but there's still time one last thing matthew
darsh uh now former assistant general manager of the tampa bay lightning is now the new general
manager of the islanders now what's interesting about the situation so i've been told is that
lou lamborello who's still under contract with the islanders is still going to work every day
I am so confused.
Shanahan, as of today, is now out.
Of the running.
That's what Arthur Staple is saying.
It looks like he's out.
And Darsh is going to be the general manager regardless.
And so, guys, I want you to prepare for a world where Matthew Darsh is reporting to Lou Lamorello
because that's looking like what's going to happen.
They may end up extending him.
That's insane.
So he finally gets his crack because apparently the Penguins were very interested in him.
before Dubas became available and he finally gets another opportunity and it's like get ready so
you know what's funny about that Dubas had every opportunity to give Matthew Darsh the job
like for two years oh yeah he could have just hired him he could have given Matthew Darsh
because he made himself the GM he's the president but also the GM he could have just given Matthew
darsh the job about that yeah yeah and he's refused to but but what's wild maybe matthew
darsh was like no i don't really want to do that ryan graves deal like get the hell out of my
office did i hallucinate uh lou's contract not getting renewed well yeah they they did say that
they were gonna move forward or move on or something like that like a month ago and he
just continued to show up to work like george no no he's still under contract he's gonna work
out the rest of his deal okay that was that was always the agreement and he's going to work
he's still working lou the you know you know how like you ever fantasize about when you get to
heaven it's like hey that thing i lost in the third grade where did it go i want to know how
many i want all the stats on my life i want to know how many socks i lost i want to know uh you
know i want to know hey can you give me it like hey siri but it's hey god yeah can you give me
the unwritten book on lula amarillo yeah i also used to think that's how heaven works yeah they
just give you your stat the catholic school thing yeah yeah okay so like how many cracks did i
actually step on and did it contribute to breaking my mother's back you kind of just get all the
universe secrets that you want to know yeah yeah how many times did i get upset behind the wheel
where i was in the wrong yeah with lou what's your main question for god how what don't we know
and you know what's crazy is lou will probably be standing in the corner and
just give a little subtle shake of the head to god and god goes that's classified i can't tell
you yeah i can't tell you because lou lamorello is mystic and magical uh he did not have you're
correct about the story the report from the ap and sportsnet published it islanders not renewing
contract of president slash general manager lou lamorello i am told that that contract that could
change contracts expire on june 30th if you work in hockey ops so he's still technically under
contract it's just not going to be renewed once july 1st comes out but they have every opportunity
to renew it now this man was born during the battle of stalingrad and is still showing up to
work every day and may everyone listening to this have that kind of energy when they're 80 whatever
four 84 so old yeah so old he was born
like during like they make period pieces about that they got to spend like millions of dollars
of the movie budget is about making things look old sorry and he that's when he was born and he's
still working and he was born in 1942 uh he was in the hockey hall of fame in 2009
that's amazing uh he was he was in the hockey hall of fame when john tavaris was selected in
the draft became new jersey general's general manager in 1987 before any of us were born
we were born yeah before we were conceived he was also the ceo of the new jersey nets for a while
wow it's yeah that's a thing that happened yeah how crazy is that yeah there you go i can see how
that wouldn't have been a fit long term yeah maybe yeah that's crazy dude this man was brian burke's
boss yeah this man drafted brendan shanahan he coached like it's un he's unbelievable it's
Lamorello was a math teacher at Johnston Senior High School in Johnston, Rhode Island for several years, ending in the early 1970s.
You know what's going to be crazy is when he leaves this job to go like coach at a university and he gets a girlfriend.
Stop.
Who's named Borden Lutzen.
No.
And she's like, hey, you want to get on Instagram?
Yeah.
And then he goes on 60 Minutes or whatever.
And he's like, hey, I'm on this Insta face.
All the interviews.
And it's so weird.
And then she mysteriously has a giant real estate portfolio starting from when they were dating.
Is that true?
Very strange.
She has a bunch of real estate.
Adam, you should listen to SDPV.
Yeah, we talked about this.
I forgot that detail.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, I don't think Lou's going to do that.
I would love to see Lou doing that beach pose that they were doing.
I would die for that.
He'd be the one on top, though.
Yeah, he'd be the one floating.
He'd be the one on top, yeah!
And then the university has to release a statement and say,
she's definitely involved, but, like, not that involved.
But it's not like that.
And it's kind of vague because they can't say anything
because they're going to offend the head coach
because that's his girlfriend.
And then they won't talk about how they met
because they might have met when she was very young.
i i i want lou to retire just so he could like imagine he just has the most unexpected transition
to like he has a podcast now and he's like all right so here's all the things that you've ever
wanted to know he he like goes on hot ones he just starts mocking the hottest wings in the world
not even making a face like has lou lamorello ever enjoyed an ice cream cone like pictured
lou lamorello eating an ice cream i'm having a drumstick right now i am you can't do it no
you can't do it stop i can't do this anymore i can't do it you might not eat all right let's
let's wrap up the show all right we need to end on one thing in particular lou lamorello give me
a second oh sorry i'll pull this up here uh maddie give me a second um the stream might be late
tonight folks before you pull this on the screen here you're listening to this during the stream
if the podcast gets out before the stream oh no the podcast is like well into the stream jesse
has to do two shows tonight the greatest regret we'll have of the brendan shanahan era is that we
did not get a brendan shanahan floating into heaven video oh sheldon keith blessed us with
the sheldon keith by lakeshore my head is in the sky i have passed on to a better life video
and brendan shanahan did not give us one of these not yet it's a cloudy day jesse and it was cloudy
yesterday there's still time i guess but it doesn't look like i'm going to go fly off into
the Sheldon Keefe Sea.
The Sheldon Keefe Memorial Lake.
They got to rename Lake Ontario.
It's now Lake Sheldon.
Lake Keefe.
No, Lake Sheldon.
Lake Sheldon?
Okay.
Gordon Lightfoot comes back from the dead,
writes a song about it.
Sheldon Keefe Memorial Lake.
Amazing.
Lake Keefe.
All right, well, that was a fun show.
There you go.
Look at him.
Bless Sheldon for doing this.
Thank you.
