being a race car driver which is why it's kind of good to have him on the network to talk about racing uh and it's going to be formula one in indycar for anybody that's interested and it's out three times a week so we'll talk to tim in about 20 minutes but first uh i want to give jesse if you don't mind the second text message i've sent you there is the one i would like to bring up okay on the show because a very important monumental hope moment happened in the nhl yesterday oh and i think that people need to know jesse you let me know when that can go up on screen uh sure i can throw it up right now if you'd like throw it up right now what they updated the key points graphic at department of the department of player safety it used to be high

sticking and history this one is roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct and no history no history whoa so they got the graphics department in there and they're like you know what let's switch it up on him he one million percent i i called it but not as well as i had hoped he got a lifetime achievement award jordan binnington we're talking about now let's rewind for a second if you've been living under a rock jordan binnington got lit up uh against the minnesota wild uh a couple days ago adam why are you doing this when we can let the department of player safety do oh let them do it let's go this is their job let them handle the setup you're right And then you fill in the gaps, obviously.

No, that's cool, that's cool. Wait, I like the sound of the opening thing. Yeah, no, they do a great job. It's very cool. Give me it! Oh, that really scratches the edge. Wednesday night in St. Louis, Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington was assessed a match penalty for leaving his crease after a goal was scored and using his blocker to punch wild forward

Ryan Hartman in the face. As the video shows, with Binnington in net, Hartman scores a power play goal to put the Wild up 5-4. On the way to celebrate the goal with his teammates, he makes light incidental contact with Binnington, who is sliding out of his crease and towards Hartman. With the play long over and as the Wild celebrate their goal, Binnington leaves the area of his crease, approaches the unsuspecting Hartman and his teammates, raises his blocker and stick to head level, and strikes Hardman in the face with the blocker. He hits another one of the Wilds, too.

This is roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct. What causes this play to rise to the level of a suspension is the act of a goaltender using his blocker in this manner, the retaliatory nature of the blow, the location and force with which it lands, and the game circumstances under which it occurred. Recklessly entering an opponent's goal celebration long after the play has ended for the purposes of seeking retribution

will not be tolerated. To summarize, this is roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct. Binnington has been neither fined nor suspended previously in his 214-game NHL career. The Department of Player Safety has suspended Jordan Binnington for two games. Now, if he keeps playing like this, he's already reached the halfway point of his career. Probably he's passed it. He's had a terrible year. and and here's the funny thing about this is that um jordan minnington um was getting lit up he he

and what i found it interesting in that video the thing that they did not mention is yeah okay he cocked his arm with the blocker punched him first off they're like well uh it's the force at which they punched him no no throwing the punch at all should be enough but it was that the fact that ryan hartman's head and neck snapped back if you see it in the replay and the second part is he's holding his fucking stick yeah yeah he's holding a log yeah we're not gonna mention that no it's the blocker not the blocker giant piece of fiber he's holding that's right yeah i was like i i was like okay that's fine whatever man um i think what's funny about all this and you know st louis fans certain st louis fans will defend jordan binnington but you got to remember even the coach

won't defend jordan binnington anymore brube said earlier this year he's got to stop with the clowning and start stopping pucks this is like the fourth or fifth time he's done this but this time i'll give benner credit he actually threw the punch right normally he's punching air and and but but not even this is the you call this a lifetime achievement award because i i don't know if it's a suspension under normal circumstances i i don't know the last goalie to get a suspension for a blocker punch there should probably be more but like carrie price just wailed on a guy like multiple times years ago i don't even know if he got a fine he might have got a fine um but that's carrie price you can't spend him no i'll know but there's history i sticking and history

actually not this time it's on sportsman like there's history but uh there's history when you get a suspension and then you do something suspension worthy again but i think what's going on with jordan bennington and the fact that he got two games is just proof that i mean they are paying attention right i'm sorry another goalie does not get two games for this no it's it's them it's the nhl saying hey man stop being a wiener yes it is it's a lifetime achievement award it's probably overdue um but the thing is like what prior to this would you suspend jordan binnington for maybe a fine like anything where the goalie just leaves their net to challenge anybody to a fight i don't know well i i think in this case you know the the thing is

it's not just leaving to challenge a fight and have a fight or whatever it's that he does this all the time and at a certain point the nhl is like okay put your clown shoes away um and sit down for a couple games and i think that's what it is right it's sort of like i saw i saw this coming around on the on the internet yesterday st louis fans uh defending bitter and being like you guys all want personality i was just about to get in there personality in the game you finally get it you hate it that is not personality that's dipshit behavior it is shithousery oh it's just i wouldn't even give it shithousery i don't know how you could define that as personality no yeah that's just you're you're a knob and like imagine you're his teammate and he's done that now you

got to get into that scrum and take a couple punches to the face because he sucks at goalie right now like well this is the thing like i i do think you know sports needs heroes and villains uh often like the best villains in wrestling for example um are the villains that win well that's what makes brad marshand a great villain yeah you got to knock them off their pedestal right cory perry oh great villain yeah uh he won the rocket he didn't he win the heart and he won a he's now won a couple cups yeah what he got one in the cup a couple weeks ago he won a cup he's won a shitload of playoff rounds right and then when you see him get knocked off his pedestal in the stanley cup final it's it's uh there's satisfaction but like this dude gets killed

like he just gets completely lit up he would be he was a better villain when he won the cup yeah the thing kind of yeah these incidents tend to happen more when he's getting caved in yes you know when when the blues are down eight one and bennington's allowed eight goals like that's when he starts to lash out like a baby yeah oh hey are you nervous do i look nervous oh shit and then he goes on to win the cup and we go oh shit yeah yeah that was personality we could get behind but like but not every bit of pizzazz is necessarily personality or like likable or even like good for the game yeah his save percentage is down 40 points since their stanley cup winning year uh his goals against average is a is almost two above what it was it

was 189 when they won it's 339 now we at the nhl department of player safety uh sentenced the st louis blues to have a goaltender with a safe percentage that starts with a nine for the next two games what they should have done is is sentenced the blues to starting him steve you you mentioned this is a lifetime achievement award yahoo sports put together an article of like a timeline of events of joining binnington and all of this dipshit stuff i don't know if you guys want to run yeah let's go we can revisit the history of jordan binnington so it starts with uh 2019 where uh some of his uh racist tweets were uncovered oh yeah taxi drivers talking another language on on the phone and also the misogynist stuff too

yeah and there's misogyny in there and then also uh he had some tweets about people wearing burkas and how he's not a fan of that and get out of the restaurant that sort of stuff yeah if they're ever if it ever seems like hey like people are like kind of particularly hard on this guy it well that's why yeah so and his response to that it was uh it was a while ago when i was a teenager it was a little sarcasm and joking around that's what life is about you live and you live and you learn you grow as a human i'm just here to play a couple of hockey games so that was his response to his racist and misogynistic tweets then we get to 2019 uh elias petterson dekes out binnington then proceeds to jam away at the puck uh binnington then proceeded to pile on top of petterson while

he was down on the ice so that was one of his first uh incidents of just uh what did you call it shithousery shithousery that was the perfect word yeah we're just watching the replay here in studio it's it's not great it's him being upset and just jumping on on petterson uh run of the so that leads to 2021 uh evander kane playing for the sharks at the time beat binnington on a deflective shot after some hesitancy the blues elect to pull binnington from the contest and while he's skating over to the bench uh binnington circled back to the sharks inevitably took defense to something binnington then proceeded to throw a fake punch at eric carlson and then skated the length of the ice pushing the sharks goaltender devin dubinick before leaving the game like do

guys remember that one so he was pulled and then did that yeah you're an ineligible player yeah get off the ice you're out of the game then in that same or in the next season 2021 um in the first of two incidents sorry before you get to the next one yeah i just want to remind everyone of the narrative that binnington helped the blues win that game because they were getting lit up because of him they got pulled but because he you know because he did that then they came back and won yeah oh and that was all thanks to jordan binnington who didn't make a single fucking save after getting pulled on account of he was pulled yeah and then didn't fight devin dubnik after going all the way the other end of the ice to challenge him he didn't fight

him no so yeah tough guy because he doesn't fight so then the next season has fought in the ahl yeah so the next season he gets into it with uh nazim qadri uh that was the swicks stinging in swicks stick swinging incident no swick i like that 20 times slightly six snakes um so both uh players were assessed 10 minute uh misconducts in that incident and then he doubled down after he got the misconduct he shot a puck at darcy kemper oh i remember that this is this is the second time in back-to-back incidences where he's ejected from the game the first one he's pulled from the game this time he's ejected from the game and still goes at the opposing goaltender participating oh yeah by chucking a puck at kemper so that happens and then 2022 uh during a second round

playoff series uh kadri crashed into bennington i assume you guys remember this from last uh last playoffs bennington was injured in the collision missed the rest of stanley finals and then um the water bottle incident where bennington comes during kadri's tnt post game sprays him with the water bottle yeah he threw it at him yeah and then uh this past season we're still going down the list bennington pulled from the game uh most goaltenders would keep their down their head down but bennington went the opposite route i like to chirping the king's bench um then there's an incident with the islanders and elia sorokin remember he's leaving uh i believe it was intermission he bumped sorokin in the shoulder that happened in november of this year

going at the bench like chirping at the bench to me i'm just like all right that's a little bit of pizzazz i also think it hurts him like i don't think that helps him at all the shoulder i like a bench shirt because there's nothing they can do about it yeah yeah it's you can't do it you can't do anything but like the the bumping sorokin i'm like you're a shithead you're a shithead for doing there was the jordan stall incident in december so that's our third one this season what was the jordan stall uh so bennington was punished for his poor decision making but he tried to lay out hurricanes captain jordan stall a massive human being who makes a living off stealing pucks from the nhl's best players this one as he was expected remember he tried to body check him and i think we

talked about that on the show oh yeah that was definitely a replay on the show i talked about meeting him in vegas he's the size of brock lesnar two days later he did the fake punch to uh jason zucker around the back of the net he hit him and he and he he tapped him on the side there wasn't not bad if i remember correctly watch it we can watch it right now watch it goes down he uh he punches zucker come oh yeah yeah no zucker goes hard into the boards i mean when you're not expecting it and you're going that fast yeah like again no you're you're right yeah no that's a so do you see how there's a bit of an escalation yeah right from sort of cheeky shithousery to like oh he's actually hurting guys now yeah it's dangerous yeah and then we get to today

where he's suspended yeah and you know like that was a long time hockey's dangerous right so it's not like it's like oh wow like how is that different from any other play well it is because he's holding a big wooden stick and he's got a you know when you are punch when most people when they throw punches in hockey it's bare knuckle right it's not a fucking huge blocker um and as much as that blocker is sort of soft if it's coming at you real fast it's not that soft no water's great to jump into but you wouldn't want to do it from 150 feet um you know it's one of those things that uh the faster it comes the harder it hits and i think i think with him um it seems like he's having a frustrating year uh it seems like the fans are on him it seems like

the rest of the like the nh like just nhl fans in general are on him and his coach is on him you You know, Craig Berube, I want to bring that back again. Craig Berube has called this out directly. And it doesn't mean, yeah, it doesn't mean that they don't, you know, he doesn't like him or whatever. He doesn't think he's a good goalie. He is capable of more than this. He's shown that.

And he's not showing that this year. Why is he not ready? Why is he not prepared? And goaltending is a very mental position. And I wonder if the escalation this year has to go, has to do with something else that's going on, whatever it is, whether it's, you know, frustration with hockey or you never know what's going on

in someone's personal life. But I just feel like at this point, if I'm Doug Armstrong, I'm pulling him and Berube into a room along with the goaltender coach and going, what do we need to do to get your head back in this game? That's a $6 million goalie. Yeah. You got a problem if he's not playing $6 million goalie. And this is the thing is they lost a better goalie

because they signed him to that contract. Oh, who's that? It looks like people are coming over to my side. Billy Husso. Hey, let's go. He's a better goalie. At least right now. Currently, yeah.

And I think that's the thing that Armstrong's got to figure out because the St. Louis Blues are going to do a real quick turnaround here. They've got great young talent, Robert Thomas and Jordan Cairo, and they've got good defense locked up. There's no reason the St. Louis Blues should be bad, but their goaltending is a real problem. And they've got a ton of capital in terms of prospects and picks to turn this around after some of the trades that they've made.

They were even in on Timo Meier. Yeah, they're going to be fascinating at the draft. absolutely i think they're going to be back in the playoffs next year if they can sort their goaltending out i is it that hard to say right is it that hard to believe i they'll be in the hunt for sure so uh and this is why like and i don't think they're going to be like at the draft you know sure they want to draft some prospects but i don't think they're looking at this like oh this is a three-year retool i think they're looking at six months they want to flip it and get back into it get some young talent on that roster and then bring up some new stuff from the from the

hl that's what i think's going on you know who could provide them with some really steady goaltending is uh jordan binnington like screw your head on man screw like we saw it in the playoffs if jordan binnington has a 905 save percentage currently it's 892 is ryan o'reilly leaf is nola charia leaf oh well who would do all the endorsements they can't put that guy in front of enough cameras yeah we'll talk about that i got actually a really good story on that that i found yeah no uh it's a good point it's 63 points uh last playoff spot 79 so they're quite a ways out yeah now they're like what's their last 10 3 5 and 2 yeah like they were they were in it they were in it and i want to say they had a bad week and they're like ah well let's pull the shoot

same as the red wings they were in it senators too is is tarasenko on the rangers is barbashev on the golden knights yeah it's a pretty seismic shift yep in terms of uh i mean they they kind of we we owe the st louis blues for what an exciting trade deadline it was oh yeah they kicked it off well they kicked it off like three times though yeah teresanko first right yeah teresanko and o'reilly and just they got everyone out and they're in on meyer and they're oh they were they were electric i actually have i i think they're gonna be great i i don't i don't think it's going to be long before they're back in like i really believe in that what they're doing there uh it's just that and i also don't think anybody's turned it around like the rangers

turned it around pretty quickly and had shisterkin um the problem is st louis can turn it around that quickly but they don't have shisterkin the the one thing in fairness i would say to him is he's certainly not the only frustrated blue uh brayden no but he's the face of it he yes he is uh but like braden shen uh breaking his stick uh berube going off on his team robert thomas chirping back yeah it doesn't seem like a happy year in st louis no no and usually teams uh that have this much turmoil are a lot worse than the blues right so there's there's hope for that team and a lot of their futility recently has been you know kind of self-manufactured in the form of selling everything they got some young guys they need a little bit of goaltending i think they're going

to be fine but it's it's going to be you know you know what's a team i i think they can look to um is the winnipeg jets um who still are man they're not so great recently i think they got shut out by boston yesterday but dave somewhere punching air yeah they're on the verge of like blowing it yeah if they miss the play they were going to be in the hunt for the top of the division yeah but the problem is like no one it's just a hot potato uh playoff spot no one wants it yeah in the west calgary who is uh the first team out of the playoffs they're four four and two in their last 10 and then winnipeg the last team in the playoffs are three five and two yeah they should kick vegas calgary calgary yeah but i mean after like a few really really tough ones but the

jets remember we were talking about in the off season like it's it's not their lack of talent it's their lack of uh putting it together and happiness also like they were they don't seem as miserable this year no not at all and uh hellebuck has been a big part of that but i i think a lot of that's rick bonus and and i think uh you know blake wheeler um getting stripped of the captaincy and still being a valuable part of that team and obviously josh morrissey and you get some performances out of this guy or that guy i i didn't really know if they'd be a playoff team based on the way their franchise was going a lot of upset folks last thing before we get to to tim here because you know jesse when you went through that uh yahoo thing um it was

like binnington wouldn't fight binnington didn't fight binnington pretended to fight binnington punched air and chirped the bench but didn't fight um by the grace of god mark andre flurry was miked up in that game and uh mike mark andre flurry you can actually go back and watch our episode with uh with alan he's a fun guy just generally he just seems to enjoy hockey and the miked up thing like you you talk about the least threatening voice you've ever heard oh yeah yeah it's like but wait just listen to because mark andre flurry did make his way down to the ice down the other end of the ice, which I believe is a penalty anyway,

and did challenge Jordan Binnington to a fight. But listen to how he did it. It's amazing. Let's go, let's go, let's go. Oh, but the ref's got Binnington. Let's go, let's go, let's go. No, no, no, let's go. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

He always goes with everybody. I don't like having my hair like this. What a gem. It'll be fun, no? Oh my gosh. By the way, those refs should be tossed out of the league. Let them go. Dude, that's the second time in a week.

I think I made a mistake. You can't make proper calls, but you're going to break up a goalie fight. You absolute losers. They broke up Reimer and Fleury, which would have been Santa Claus versus the Easter Bunny. Yeah, I know. What a weird... Imagination land goes against each other. Just amazing.

I don't think so It was Scott Niedermeyer, Scott Stevens, and the other guy was Ken Danico And when you played NHL 2000, Ken Danico's name always had a hammer next to it Because he threw big hits.

Yeah. because he played from uh 84 to 2003 that's a long career i uh today i learned of ken danico sometimes i think you and i are the same age and other times i learn you're a precious little baby this is one of those times jesse ken danico when he played uh one two three four five six the last six years of his career played full seasons didn't miss too many games scored four goals oh yeah he was always he's always in the lineup no no he's he's he's honestly like he's like you know people call Dion Phaneuf a pylon uh Ken Danico was a pylon but that was back when pylons were really useful he wasn't like a place in the game for that a thousand percent because it was

like get as big as you can and play the neutral zone trap and that was Ken Danico's game and he was great at it he also ended his career on a Stanley Cup which is very good that was the Mike rup stanley cup goal right it was yeah it was that's right out there trollingly fans uh all right i apologize to sense fans before we move on to anything why do i have to apologize uh they don't have a first round pick oh but it is top five protected we forgot that that's right yeah so we talked about they do kind of if they got the number one overall they'd still get if they got top five they get it yeah at the sense yeah so listen ken danico played 20 playoff games or more in a season five times well because they won all the time they were a great team and that

I think you like the drama This is true So Tim is Tim's been in racing forever. We're going to get into Tim's story a little bit, but just so you know, there's going to be pre and post Grand Prix weekend

episodes. So going into the weekend, Tim, you got a new episode out today for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and then you'll have one out Sunday, Monday and then there'll always be one midweek. And it's not just going to be Formula One because if you're an open wheel race fan, you also probably like IndyCar. And IndyCar is obviously a lot more

North American centric as well. So Tim's going to have a lot of interviews and insights and stuff like that. And what makes Tim special, at least in our estimation, is that Tim was a race car driver and has connections directly inside the F1 and the IndyPax, right? Able to talk to members of teams and break stories and things. So we see him a little bit like a CJ of that sort of area. And I think that's kind of cool. And if you're more of a casual racing fan and you watch Drive to Survive, we did a review of all 10 episodes of Drive to Survive. the apex podcast feed you can listen to all 10 episode recaps of season five of uh drive to survive now tim um you have the experience of being uh an athlete a driver somebody who's been there can you can you tell steve who you've just met at a bar because it's saint patrick's day it has to be you've just met steve at the bar he asked you he asked you about your backstory because You guys have had a couple of beers and you're getting to know each other. And tell us, where does the race journey begin for you? And how does it take us to Europe and a whole bunch of other places as well? So just off the top, do you want me to tell from like top to bottom?

Because it is long. It's a long story. I don't want to bore you guys. What's your birthday? Well, I mean, I think it starts at what? Like, you know, 15, 16, you're at the track and you get talent scouted, right? Yeah, I was nine years old. um for go-karts and then and then yes i i was actually working for a racing academy when i was

15 16 years old wrenching um formula cars so race cars and with that program you you got to work on the race cars but then you also got the opportunity to to drive them like to test them out and stuff and through a whole bunch of different things meeting some people eventually what ended up happening was i i got an opportunity to do a test drive with a formula ford team and so for those who don't know back back then i want to say it was around it was maybe around 1999 2000 but back then the entry level into open wheel racing was you know go karts and then you progressed into formula ford and so i got to do a formula ford test the problem was it was i was too fat like i was huge man so i was about 280 89 pounds i kind of had i did a lot of athletics and stuff but then once i

hit my teenage years you know i wasn't carting as much but i was still passionate about the sport and i let myself go and so i got to do this test so i like squeezed myself into this car and went out did the test it was a it was it took about the entire day and essentially they changed things on the race car they ask you what you feel and you give them feedback sometimes they'll trick you and they'll say that hey we made a small change go see if you can um feel it or whatever and you come in and you give them your feedback and towards the end of the test i was offered to come and drive for them they they they gave me a contract and they said look you know if you want to come in and race for us we think you are very talented and we think you can make it but there's

stipulations you have to lose weight you have to get in shape because you know you can barely get through the entire test yeah and you're an athlete you're an athlete you gotta take care of your body right yeah exactly but you're still a kid at this point right yeah yeah yeah i was i was six i was around 16 at this time oh my gosh yeah so anyway so wow yeah you know so i signed the contract whatever was able to get into formula ford and did quite well my first season there one rookie of the year and then second season i graduated into canadian pro formula ford championship so at that point you're racing against like everybody uh like the best drivers across canada i didn't have a very good season that year but i did get talent spotted again this time by a team owner

who was who's running a car in a series um called formula renault formula renault is actually well it was a stepping stone uh into formula one and renault takes drivers from that program and ushers them on and into into f1 that's that's essentially what their goal is and so for those who don't know or who are watching drive to survive well renault they are alpine so the alpine team that is that's essentially renault and you can't really buy renault's in canada but they are the second biggest automaker in the entire world yeah they're huge they're huge absolutely huge racing tradition as well yeah and so like it was there was uh you know it was a great opportunity and you know what i took it i took it with both hands my first season was okay my second season went

really well um from there jumped into champ car atlantics which is uh indie lights or indie next is what it's called now and everything's been rebranded so once was champ car is now indie car uh and then from there raced in the fia gt championship in europe so moved to europe raced all across uh europe raced at a lot of the f1 tracks um that formula one visits today and then when the recession hit uh you know lost sponsorship like i don't come from a like we don't my family doesn't have like a ton of money so we couldn't just go and invest in racing you know i had to get by with talent i had to get by um knowing that the teams i was driving for they had funding that were going to be able to pay for my ride and cover everything cover the expenses

etc etc uh with stipulations you know i did have to bring some sponsorship money to some of the teams but outside of that once the recession hit and this is around i want to say like 08 09 you know a lot of the teams started losing sponsorship and sponsors started pulling out of racing and big car manufacturers started leaving racing as well and you had how many who folded in formula one there's a couple teams that just straight up said we're not racing yeah like honda um honda eventually well obviously honda was huge yeah honda is still huge i mean honda pulls out of formula one and yeah ross braun comes in and we know what what happens there um but essentially i lost pretty much everything and uh i had to move back home so i'm from keen

ontario which is um about is about northeast of of peterborough i want to say i'm probably getting this all wrong but whatever um anyways so i'm from a really small town and what did you do yeah uh so i ended i ended up needing a job um there's a chicken farm that's in keen and uh we were good friends with the uh we were good friends with them and they gave me a job to come and come and do some work for them at the chicken farm racing cars in europe one year the next year you're working at a chicken farm yeah and delivering pizza for uh for a big pizza chain uh in peterborough what so that arrived right on time right on time nothing fresh out the oven love that you were the best race car you were the best pizza delivery guy ever what were you

driving what were you driving for your pizza delivery car yeah i think if i can remember correctly i think it was i had like a mazda 626 it was like in 1987 it had no heat and this was in like the 2000s man so i froze my ass off in this car and uh eventually it died you know like the i think the camshaft if i remember correctly like no sorry i think it was the crankshaft ended up punching a hole through the radiator and like i took it into this service guy and i'm like dude i what's going on with this car he's like yeah it's dead man it's it's got it's my great years old give it a rest yeah 30 years yeah the car's dead let it yeah so this is um so but what's cool here tim and i think and i'm going to stop you for a second you know you think about somebody

devoting their whole life to something and getting to that level you are right below formula one you're right before below indie right that's the best the best of the best in the world it's like being in the ahl yeah but you have to pay for your seat in the ahl right and that's and that's why you know a lot of these racers they have sponsors that get them there or they have extremely rich parents they're talented either way but that's sort of how you do it and tim you didn't have those after the recession and and what's amazing to me is that most people would have ended up drunk in their parents basement talking about the good old days but you didn't do that and so you've been working for tsn for a long time you're you're you're their key race analyst which is the

other part we love tim is he's he's done a ton of work for tsn and continues to to this day how did you get involved there because steve you'll be able to relate to this okay yeah so i was uh actually i was out on delivery and i delivered a delivered a pizza to a friend who worked at tsn and they were essentially like what are you doing here and i'm like hey 30 minutes are free here it is i didn't know what else to say what am i supposed to say take take someone through that entire journey about how i kind of sort of i guess sort of hit rock bottom almost and like where am i gonna go now here's your pizza and he's like well he's like you have so much experience within the sport and whatever he's like how would you like to you know come and come and do some

work for for tsn and i thought well you know it's a really great opportunity so eventually like a long long story short i eventually got the opportunity to go and work at tsn and i was um i got to learn how to like write scripts um make highlight packs yeah okay there were like there were like a lot of sports uh that i just didn't know that i like i had to learn and get better at and i was cruising through twitter like one day i think i want to say it was around 20 might have been about 2012 20 2013 and adrian morznarowski is like breaking like nba trades and stuff like that and i'm sitting there thinking i'm like man this guy's really smart you know he's using like a lot of his contacts connections whatever he has to put news out and you know

that's obviously giving him value and the network is seeing also more value in him as at the same time and i thought well you know what you know i've got so many contacts connections within the racing world and i was like you know this is great tsn's got you know formula one coverage and they gave me the opportunity to just like hey start developing some some f1 content and let's see where it kind of goes and it was a great opportunity and i'm grateful uh grateful for it it a lot of it was a lot of work and stuff but i mean it's um it's it's been a it's been a crazy ride man like it's just just my whole my whole life ups and downs and the ups and yeah i think things have things have been nuts but it's uh i'm always grateful for getting opportunities

is essentially the way i kind of look at life whatever something is it's an opportunity either to learn or get better and yeah it's this is great too i mean like meeting jesse and adam like you know last year and yeah just talking for a while like yeah and just getting to learn what you guys do and how cool everything was and yeah and then like you guys saying hey you want to come do a podcast i'm like yeah for sure it'd be cool so yeah here we are this is it's great this is just great what were those great for me what were those highlight nights like for you because you did it for cbc you did it for nhl network which was at the tsn building yeah so i was in the tsn studios it was a cup of coffee it was there it was like march to may 2013 or something so we

might have just missed each other but yeah for sure those nights were fun yeah um it was it was a lot of uh it was a lot of um uh you you can never tell what was going to end up being a big play because you would you would clip a goal you'd clip a big save you'd clip a big hit and you start compiling your pack and then all of a sudden the game is eight six and you have to throw out two-thirds of your work like at least two-thirds of your work my favorite highlight pack started with and we pick it up at six six because because there's a time limit and you can only show so much of it i don't think people realize guys how much work goes into those sports center type shows right like that like it's a ton of work it's hard a lot well because because there's uh there's the

the person basically writing the script there's the person um editing it all together in the software there's the uh folks that are compiling like just clipping absolutely everything they were wildly good at that uh in the tsn studios and then obviously the host has to get on there and read this muck that i've compiled for the first time and hope that it's good like steve are you done uh no okay can you be done in the next 20 seconds because we got to go to air oh jesus and you just throw it up and you hope it's good and it's uh it's wild because it teaches you it teaches you so like so much and you know there's just so much information kind of coming at you and then when the show is like it's when it's live it's like oh my god like i gotta get

this thing to air and it's like for me i like i enjoy pressure like i really like i really like pressure i love i love that feeling of um hey you're the person who's got to get this done and this is when we need it and you've got to do it now type of deal and i just i really thrived under under that stuff and i've always loved that even since i was a kid and uh i uh i had some fun times at you know working nights in sports center as well i mean man like so the people you get to meet too behind the scenes uh it's awesome it's awesome so so there's a story that i think you know uh that i think everybody can sort of relate to when we talk about formula one this year okay um we got a former world champion from 15 years ago who now has the second fastest car on the

grid because what matters in formula one is is obviously you know the driver talent matters but if your car is slow your car is slow yeah and so so tim you just did a feature for tsn on fernando Alonso who is basically he's like the Brad Marchand of Formula One he's a great villain and he's 41 and he lost I think it was two kilograms this offseason they're already really thin but he lost a ton of weight uh even by his standards and finished third at the first Grand Prix with the team that was like back of the pack last year so for anybody that's not into it yet why is it so important like we know we know who the champions are but this Fernando Alonso story is really special yeah it is you know i mean to see where you know fernando started i mean when i

was in like formula renault you know fernando was in formula one and that's how long he's been in formula one for he's been there for so long he did take a couple years off to pursue some other things like whack and indycar and trying to do the indy 500 and dakar rally and then he came back to formula one and he raced for alpine for two seasons before moving over to aston martin um during the summer break is when the news uh broke and went down that he was moving over there but yeah he's he's at aston martin for this season and i think one of the one of the most one of the coolest things i think that comes from fernando is his age i mean 41 years old is it's not young and for racing and for formula one in particular like racing is so hard on your body

because you know literally g-forces are shifting your organs like it's it's very physical and for for a guy like fernando at 41 years of age to still show up uh and really just perform which he's been doing incredibly uh since pre-season testing this year is remarkable you know if we think about how much these drivers and the people behind the scenes and team personnel have to have to travel steve i mean if you think about it you know there's a ton of travel in the nhl right you know teams are flying somewhere every single day with formula one they are flying around the country so around the world and so you know one time you're in berain then you're going back to the uk and then you're flying to jetta and then from jetta you're going all the way down to

australia from australia you're gonna come back up to the uk and then go to azerbaijan and then go to miami and so you're having to adjust your sleep schedule the way you train what you eat and as you get older you know the travel just really takes it out of you and so to watch what fernando is doing for me is extremely impressive um to see and to see just how well he's been performing I mean to finish third beating the Ferraris in in Bahrain I mean Adam and Jesse we've we've talked about this ad nauseum we didn't even think that this Aston Martin team was going to be that good but then we're we're done free practice one taping this on a Friday we're finished free practice one and it's Red Bull Red Bull Alonzo Stroll so Red Bull Red Bull Aston Martin

Aston Martin that's a that's unbelievable it's an unbelievable turnaround and the team came from too and speaking of and people that you know hockey hockey people appreciate toughness lance stroll who's a canadian his father owns the team but lance is extremely talented as well so don't let that take it away lance broke both of his wrists before the season a couple what three weeks ago and he ran it was uh or i guess four weeks ago yeah it was well it was uh it was about 11 about 11 14 11 to 14 days before berain and then he raced and and still finished what seventh yeah i was like i think it was i remember correctly it was six i don't have the results in front of me i believe it was six so the the thing is that so lance actually so he he broke one of

his wrists that needed to have uh pins and put into it and then the other the other wrist had like a hairline sort of fracture in it and then he broke his big toe as well and so a lot of this news didn't really actually come out until he talked about it no one knew he they kept it pretty pretty quiet people knew that he had hurt himself but they weren't sure how how bad things actually were until after the first practice session he's like okay you know these are the extents of my injury um i'll give you an example like i i um strained my wrist in a crash because what happens with some of the formula cars not in formula one but in indycar and everything else there's no power steering so what happens is when you crash the car or the front wheels there's this impact on

the front wheels what happens is the steering wheel it goes in any direction that it wants and there is nothing you can do to stop it from going in any direction and so my hands were still just on the wheel as i was trying to take my hands because i knew i was going to crash right you kind of always know when that that's about to happen as you're in it then you kind of have to you have to react to the impact that's going to follow so you're you're in this is happening in split seconds right and so just about to crash just about to hit the wall just about to take my hands completely off the wheel didn't get them off in time and the wheel grabs my hand and wrenches it underneath and so what happens is i i actually was quite lucky usually in those

circumstances you're going to fracture your your wrist your forearm for sure no problem uh i got i got away with just a sprain and i had to wear a um a uh i can't remember what it was called but essentially it was to stop my wrist from moving in any sort of direction i could still go like this and i could still use you know my arms could still drive down and i could still drive but it was painful it was so painful it was agonizingly painful the adrenaline it helped for sure but for lance the amount of uh just him just him just the amount of devastation to his body and then having to get in an f1 car an f1 car thing's got a thousand horsepower man like it uh it was pretty remarkable well and he did a lot of riding a bike yeah he was hit by a car i think in spain

yeah no so he i think what ended up happening was so he was uh riding i believe he obviously he was either a cyclocross or mountain biking i'm not too sure but basically he hit a hit a hole and see you later yeah yeah and this is like just you know a week we're out of you know pre-season testing this is just before pre-season testing so pre-season testing steve is like you get in the car and you learn it and training drivers only get yeah essentially it's like training camp but you're you're having to learn something that you've never driven before so for um nhl players nba like they've always shot the ball they've always used a stick maybe the skates are new and they might take a little while to get, you know, new to skates.

But when it comes to a race car, it's completely different. It's all alien at that point. You have no idea what this thing will do and you have to learn it and you have to understand what it needs to go fast and you have to understand how do you have to change your driving style? So what you are naturally ingrained to do, what do you have to change personally, like mentally, physically to drive this car and to get it to do what you want it to do? So for Lance, he missed all of that.

missed all of it and that's huge that's where you build your confidence that's where you learn the limit of the car and he then had to come in and race in berain and man that's like the performance he put in how far he was off of fernando i think he was around maybe maybe six tenths honestly i thought he was going to be seconds like it he was it was very impressive and he was in qualifying crying in the car while he was driving the car because he was in so much pain it's an unbelievable story and no one's talking about it but it's one of those where it's like so that's a good canadian right there really tough guy and it was uh and and so you know the aston martin team if you want to get in any team uh first off they're green uh second um

baseball classic is that the trumpet guy yeah uh he's amazing and it prompted a lot of people in the sports media space to say cancel the wc wbc you don't need it why are we even bothering with this what really matters is the mlb season who cares if the players like it now jesse and steve who cares if the players like it jesse and steve have uh opinions on this they were we're talking about it upstairs but jesse i want to start with you sure because you were bringing up i know there was a barstool one but then there was also um keith olbermann yesterday tweeting about oh yeah how he thought it was stupid that tweet has now been buried by the way i can't find it um keith over and he's to tweet a little less he tweets a lot he tweets a lot i wouldn't know

i'm blocked let me bring over agent provocateur guest keith olbermann even though it was an accident um let me bring up keith olbermann's tweet so so that i guess the main thing is here for them from this perspective and and i don't agree with this perspective but i'm going to represent this perspective in this debate because um because no one else on the panel agrees so we gotta have somebody representing that side you don't need to do that i'm not gonna i'm not gonna fake it but i'm gonna say here's what they would say and what they would say is listen these guys are paid 10 20 30 million dollars in some cases to come and play in the mlb for 162 games plus playoffs if they're lucky enough and what matters and what funds the game is the mlb why are we

worried about this stupid exhibition plan for your country nonsense why do we need that yeah you don't even need to say what they're gonna say i'm gonna read what they said which they is keith oberman who tweeted yesterday uh first freddie freeman who was injured at the world baseball classic now edwin ds the world baseball classic is a meaningless exhibition series designed to get you to buy another uniform no not get you get you because it's capitalized designed to get you to buy another uniform to hell with the real season and split up teammates based on where their grandmothers got laid call it off now no call it off period now that's what keith olbermann said and it's such a i don't understand why the

players caring about this bothers these people so much it's it it i think goes to show you see the people i've seen tweet about this though aren't baseball only fans like it so that doesn't make any sense to me that that's a it's it's a it's a thought process i've only seen in baseball like hockey so hockey the the only example i can think of for the biggest example i can think of john tavaris i think breaks his leg or hurts his knee at the 2014 sochi olympics his season's

done islanders ownership was extremely upset the islanders organization was extremely upset i didn't see many islanders fans say cancel the olympics don't send any more nhlers to the olympics they were probably upset that he got injured of course of course but star centerman but he got injured it happens man it happens i didn't see any nhl players say we should no longer be going to the olympics i know they that was ironically the last olympics that nhl players played in that's probably a good reason why too it's i mean it's

a huge reason why um because the powers that be want to protect their uh not human beings but assets uh in their eyes even though the assets sorry people want to go to the friggin olympics right so i understand the mlb being upset about this i understand the individual teams being upset about this but the fans it's baseball yeah you want to watch baseball they're playing baseball he got hurt playing baseball like in soccer is there a higher honor than winning the world cup right like is there a higher club championship than winning the world cup i know the world cup is it yeah i'm asking that earnestly because i don't know no well like uefa is valuable like you want to win it in canada we got conca calf which is a kind of club cup yeah

but the premier league is it's awesome but it's not the world cup but if a guy playing for tfc gets hurt at some other thing we don't cry and shit our pants about it because it's built into sporting and i think this this thing this argument i guess or whatever this outrage would be so much different if the players didn't care about it as well and like half of the rosters didn't want to go and they're fighting they're like oh i don't want to play in this no but the players also care and so the players care the fans really care it's a cool thing for the sport why are you upset at well now so so so what what do you say to the fans then yeah who you know in in diaz's case he's not gonna he's not gonna play for the mets this year they have a good team you know he was lights out

last year what do you say to the owners who have invested 20 30 million dollars in these players and they come back injured yeah that you can also get injured in spring training like that also happens like yeah these guys are out there trying they're playing baseball because that's what they want to do in this moment and dustin penner get injured by a pancake somehow like wasn't wasn't that a showman blew out his knee on a on a sprinkler yeah yeah it's stroman who's playing not for america who's he playing for uh puerto rico okay i believe yeah okay anyways shit happens yeah um then you asked me an interesting question uh beforehand too when we were talking about this you asked me where's it taking place oh yeah i go so you because you mentioned how cool it is for

shoai atani to be playing in asia and i'm like oh where where's the baseball world baseball classic the world baseball classic is taking place all around the world there the different divisions are in different parts of the world which is such a fantastic idea because it gets these guys who would never play in these countries over there to play in front of these fans and the shoai atani is so important because what he means to japan and japanese baseball fans is incredible and their manager uh hideki kuriyama was talking about it yesterday after they eliminated italy to reach the quarters or semis i forget uh he said when we see shoe playing not only the players but also the japanese baseball fans all the nation is feeling something extra this is a guy who who

played there he played for the uh ham fighters in japan love that and he comes over to america and he's the biggest star on the planet this guy two-way player we haven't seen this is babe ruth and then he gets to go back and play for the country this time and it's not that by the way the entire nation it's such a cool moment for the fans it's it's like though what's crazy about shohei is it's like he could be the number one center on your hockey team or he could win the yes like it's not even an exaggeration both like you're not even exaggerating it's not that he plays both it's that he's the best at both he threw 102 mile an hour pitch in the world baseball classic last night and he's a hitter wow wow so he gets to go throw on a uniform with the japanese

flag on it and and play in that country and as the star and that means so much to those fans how could you not be happy for this event that's growing the game i also love for baseball i gotta to say too growing the game so key i love watching um japanese baseball clips anyway because their fans are bananas they're up all the time doing chants and doing things like you see the the blue jays uh have a cheer squad right and they come in and they work and they work okay okay blue jays Blue Jets, let's play ball. It's double at the end.

Come on, guys. Know the dance. They come in and they do that occasionally and whatever. They work hard and they're running. The Japanese and South Korean cheer squads do not stop all game for anyone or anything. They're the real athletes. They are working it

all game and so are the fans. Baseball in Toronto, it's like, everybody sit down, shut up. We're all going to fill out our magazines with our pencils and this person got why are you filling out a scorecard you could just look it up on the internet later i don't know but the the the different cultures and the embracing of this sport is fascinating and awesome and you imagine take the nhl who hasn't had a you know world cup since 2016 seven years now seven years imagine you had and where are they where are they in the pecking order of

things they're eighth or ninth at this point yeah and i think if you look at what okay imagine okay imagine you have team switzerland taking on team germany with the nhl well not the nhl world cup just the world cup of hockey and the you've seen what the fans look like in davos you've seen what the fans look like at the spangler period can you imagine man oh my goodness can you imagine what that might be like if we had them the divisions each playing in their own area as well and and it's funny because it's funny that you mentioned those two teams in particular because those two teams in particular show how much we miss a big international event like the world cup or the olympics because you have in in those games that you mentioned leon dry sidle you have uh on the

other end nico he sure and you could have like a jj peterka and you can have a timo meyer yeah right it's a pretty solid but but imagine those guys going like imagine timo meyer and his band of merry men make it to the finals what a story yeah oh tim stutzela how did i get to paturka before stutzela i know it's wrong you know like those are two teams with you know maybe they're not that great compared to the others but they're emerging countries sort of like shohei itani like imagine being on that japanese baseball team and going holy shit like it's shohei itani i get to play with him yeah i get to play with leon dry sidle you know how mcdavid's always setting him up in the leon dry sidle spot i get to be that guy that's nuts what an opportunity there'll be

that is the nhl team's over as much as we give ownership rightly a hard time for that um it doesn't mean that you know we've we as people don't want uh arizona hockey to work look at look at who's the biggest beneficiary of arizona hockey so far lee fans we have the best player that's ever played for us that's ever put on a toronto maple leafs jersey in my opinion and i actually think the way mitch marner's playing this year he might be he might be number two uh and i that might be recency bias but show me two better players that have ever played for this team and i you could easily make an argument for marner and matthews austin matthews arizona kid all said and done could be the greatest leaf of all time i want hockey to work in arizona
