red shirt day and red for accessibility and tag easter seals on as an easter seals ontario so
they can reshare your post uh you can also find a pledge form on the website along with sample
pledges for inspiration and additional information and resources uh i can't wait to see all the
pictures so make sure you post your picture and i am already red looking because i was sitting
outside for my daughter's soccer practice and whenever the season hits i it it was a because
it's not only not only is it a soccer field gentlemen but it's a soccer field that's not
grass it's that plastic turf grass uh and it is it's a cooker outdoors outdoors they went with
fake turf thing outdoors well see it's a it's a so in the winter time they cover it up with a big
tent uh and they've got a big like oh and then it becomes an indoor that's right okay yeah but it
it's cooking i need an american broadcaster to talk about the turf every waking moment
they do talk about turf a lot of that i'll never get over the 26 15 blue jays that was 2015 right
batista bat flip yeah they all they did was talk about the turf talked about the damn turf and
it's impact that's an 11 year old reference my friend oh my god it is i know just throwing that
out there yeah the bat flip was 11 it was it was yeah batista's throwing out you know baseballs
before the game now like he old i don't want to do this in the level of excellence yeah man it's
retired you can't even wear 19 anymore i'd like to leave the room and go home i know i know now
let me give you a couple stats before we really get into last night's game because it was a good
one it was a deuce tough night for people that didn't think it was going to rate well if you
like hockey who cares about the ratings if you're in sports business maybe you care but i don't care
that much is that a bar conversation no oh but the ratings what about the ratings i would walk
away from you i would take my drink to another table yeah no i don't you're like hey let's talk
about tv ratings so kendall baker who works for uh yahoo sports kendall tweeted this and he does
the newsletter for yahoo sports he says uh this is the 46th consecutive season in which complete
the sentence 40 oh this is the auger this is the auger the auger stat in which a former teammate
of yarmir yager has appeared in the stanley cup final who is it oh gotta be someone old
you would think uh is it raspis anderson it is raspis anderson who played with yager in calgary
just in 1718 not that five seconds yeah so not that old not isn't that crazy he would have been
a young player in this league yeah he would have he was quite quite young but that's i think that's
pretty cool now the other stat and vegas has this is why i think they're where they're probably
gonna win um they have taken every stat against them uh and made it for them if that makes any
sense like they didn't have any multi-goal comebacks during the regular season they only
won 39 games like you know they wouldn't have made the playoffs that they'd been in the eastern
conference just one thing on the artist that sorry you're moving a little quickly just before
i could bring this up oh sure um the nhl announced in 2022 that it ended yeah i thought i thought so
too so i don't know why we're still doing this are we sure yeah so um the they bended the stat
i think to include like international play teammates eventually because philip crawl
leaf legend was included in the list yeah and i'm like that's that's pushing this past well
past the break you know what give him the internet give him the internet i think we got to a point
where it was andre palat in the 2000 uh in the 22 because you have the list adam don't you i don't
have the full list oh yeah you can do the list with the tweet but i think that was the one and
he actually only played with him one time in like an international event at like one world champions
so they're counting it yogurt teammates now in any capacity so technically i still like that
I don't know. The NHL itself tweeted for anybody listening. This is what I brought up from 2022. One of the NHL's most incredible streaks has come to an end. This year's Stanley Cup final will be the first time in 40 plus years not to feature a teammate of Yarmir Yager. That's the NHL saying that on June 12th, 2020.
Yeah, but here's the thing with the NHL is they only are about the NHL.
And this is a team.
This is a league that was so arrogant that they were like, here's the World Cup and here's a bunch of countries in one.
Right.
I'm sorry.
But to me, international competition matters because I'm a fan of sports other than hockey.
And as much as the NHL likes to pretend nobody plays hockey anywhere else, they do.
So I think if you were a teammate of Yager's internationally and you were playing in this in these finals or previous finals, it counts, motherfucker.
All right.
All right.
46 years we celebrated the passing of the streak and then somehow it kept living that's the nhl
being the nhl about it hey you know what how about we take a big old dump on fun uh our money's up
uh we we could totally benefit from having jogger in studio hey it's the 46th year
no let's not do that but he did they didn't play in the nhl together let's not have eat it
now jogger i think is retiring at the end of this season finally does he the only reason he played
by the way is because he owns the team and that's how they sell out right sell tickets but he's like
my body hurts yeah so how does he have to wait three years to be hall of fame better not i mean
he hasn't been in the nhl for seven or eight that's so annoying i think that's i think i think
we don't have to do that listen whenever i do these all-time conversations like all all the
stuff i i did uh researching for hockey rants and raves seeing jogger being the exception in nearly
every category researched i'm like this is this is annoying yeah it's like it's like you have a
beautiful white shirt with a little smudge on it oh and you can't get it out but you can get this
one out and all you have to do is the right take the man in his late 50s and place him in the hall
of fame yep that's all you have to do now the vegas stat i want to get to um greg greg waschinski
tweeted this he said it was a historic win for vegas entering tonight road teams were oh and 55
went down by multiple goals
at any point
in a Stanley Cup final game one.
It is the first time,
put another way,
ever,
that any team on the road
has won,
went down by multiple goals
in a Stanley Cup final.
And I just have one thing to say.
Freddie, I freaking warned you, man.
Freddie?
Freddie?
I...
Man.
I came over to your team, Freddie.
Adam, listen.
Hey.
it's ignore him it's just you and i talking okay
i think it's i think it's an interesting line that he's drawn in the sand as well
i don't know what this obsession with freddie anderson is but i gotta tell you
boy were you right last night now i was right on the first one versus montreal too
yeah yeah yeah i was someone that was just two games so so most of the time freddie's right
there was an insane stat like in game ones the hurricanes have allowed 11 goals and in the all
the other games combined they've allowed 15 this is what i'm expecting to happen but here's the
thing vegas are really good like it was really good i don't think that game's on freddie i think
that game's a couple goals around freddie not the whole game totally and i think there's a couple
goals the other way maybe you want to save so i think it kind of balanced out and goaltending
was that's that game is on vegas being able to outwork carolina which i didn't think was a thing
that could happen but like that's why you keep buying and buying and buying and never stop buying
because in moments like this you have a guy like thomas hurdle who hasn't hadn't scored for 29 games
that weird little streak march 3rd like that's unbelievable for a guy that talented but he was
a huge acquisition by them like a while back but he's still on the team and they've kept adding
and now that you come to this moment here's a depth piece that's getting a pass from a fourth
liner and he's outworking his defenseman to get this goal that's going to win you game one in the
stanley cup final yep so that's unbelievable so hurdle hurdle should be getting the flowers that
was an unbelievable goal wicked snipe but i remember all the way back to like pre bruce
cassidy getting fired we were talking about how marner is not a center and we then went through
their center depth and obviously william carlson was hurt and that sort of forced their hand but
then we talked about thomas hurdles limitations and how he's got some injuries and he probably
shouldn't be playing center so they announced the lineup and oh it's colton sissons and hurdles on
the wing okay let's see how this goes colton sissons was magnificent last night and that was
an unbelievable just behind the back backhand pass oh yeah for a guy who's like i think his
career high in assists in a season's like 20 um his career high in points i know is 35 he was
drafted in the second round 2012 and he's on this stage for a reason and he's going for his first
cup and the the the big story with vegas is all the star power they have and they played very well
Sissons man that's but he nicked out in the last series oh yeah fourth line guys are doing
big big things for them and I know technically it's the third line but and I think it doesn't
take away from the point there and the the Sissons thing like that's my argument with like keep
buying that's the Nick Hague deal yep where they send him to Nashville and they got uh Lowe's on
and Sissons back and they had to send out a second round pick as well uh to send Nick Hague there
and he's been in Nashville this whole time he played nearly 700 games and we were worried about
what they might look like without white cloud exactly there's another good big piece they've
done i think jesse to just to just to jump on that real quick the uh do you think getting back
to your initial point that vegas cares who they might draft this spring with uh what pick well
exactly uh what about next spring do you think they care right now uh i don't think they got
picks either yeah so here's the thing as jesse says keep buying and eventually like your acquisitions
of all of these guys and this incredible depth of talent
and everybody who's out there working really hard
because they caught Goss' bear sleeping.
They're going around the back.
They catch him sleeping.
I think afterwards he said he took a breath for a moment
and he cost him the game.
He wore it hard, but that's what happened.
Both of those guys working together
and the beautiful backhand pass.
After tying it too.
Yeah.
He looked, yeah, he got beat bad.
I think it's interesting.
When you look at the way Vegas are constructed,
every single time it's somebody that shook loose from their team that wasn't necessarily happy
anymore and and you look at how anaheim built the build they're built the same um uh the vegas
golden knights you think about mark stone shit wasn't good with eugene when they got patch ready
shit wasn't good with montreal and bergevin right when they got and i'm not just talking about guys
that are still there jack eichel obvious marner obvious um like there are very few players that
the vegas golden knights have had to go and pry away from their teams uh you know we know that
rasmus anderson was going there for you know three and a half four years um but we saw that train
coming and i don't know that he's going to be resigned i still don't see that being like i can't
imagine that that's a priority but i look at the guys they've added and i keep saying like barbachev
even was maybe he was just a deadline pickup which is what he was um not a lot of noise was given to
that deal when it went through nobody really paid that much attention to it force of nature
and he was for st louis too so we should have but we were focused on ryan o'reilly and nola chari
right i think i think the that what vegas does is you know we we see them as this extremely
aggressive force but when you kind of peel it back the way they've built this team has been
quite patient in a lot of ways you can actually add a name to the list i'm glad you brought up
the the sissons trade because it's actually jesse brought it up but oh jesse brought up my bed yeah
no i like i thought i you know what it was me no it's actually it's worse so it's sissons
lozon i mentioned that yeah who was also oh you did yeah i mentioned the second hag and lozon
well stupid idiot it was a third no but it because it became a second i believe oh really
yeah i had it oh that's incredible hey jesse you ever miss stuff you ever listen to a podcast and
you miss stuff you're on the podcast did you know that lozon was in that chill it's crazy uh i can
bring it up the exact bring up the uh national read it out read it out it is lozon man that's
crazy and on hockey db it says a third round pick in 2027 for nick hague holy moly yeah because i
i did blow by it like when i was talking about it but the pick um if vegas wins two rounds in
2026 the pick upgrades to a 2027 second round pick so that's that's why it's a second round
pick now um but yeah it was uh sorry nick haig and uh the second and then lozanne and uh there
we go colton says it's so there you go that's the tray man yeah two i believe it's haji haji
oh and uh colton sicily yeah i'm never letting that go i'm never ever letting that go ever till
the day i die uh good old calabria sicily um so i wanted i want to talk about the actual game
because here's the thing that got me obviously ehler scoring a couple of times off the top was
amazing murat attis from uh winnipeg was tweeting about hey who could have seen this coming and he
put out like i think 14 or 15 different articles where he said maybe they should get him more ice
time maybe they should get him more ice time hey this healers guy is good maybe they should get
him more ice time i man so this is anecdotal but the jets fans i talked to are just down
catastrophic they're they're so disheartened by what's going on they don't feel listened to who
can blame them i i know because they're never listened to you know who was great at the world
vinnie heinola you know who's basically just been a dungeon prisoner in winnipeg for god knows how
long how many first round picks are they gonna do that too by the man how many how many of them
and i know i know they're a year removed no no no let's let's roll out wheeler one more time
man it's it's bad it's bad and last night was uh well it's the frustration we've been feeling for
two months certainly in leaf land uh yeah man so he gets out those were two great goals they were
two great goals uh carter hart did make some saves in between though that i was like okay so he is on
his game it was just the first shot is a good goal the second that then the first glove save he makes
him like he's on his game tonight he'll be okay both goalies had good moments but overall i think
yeah there was the jarvis one where he did the flash of the the leather there yeah i remember
that and jarvis kind of was like oh yeah you know it's like that should have been in um they need
more out of that guy and they need more out of that one well i assume we'll get there eventually
well that's been the most disappointing part for carolina this entire playoff when you look at the
the the game on the whole what sticks out to me is how carolina for the first time in these playoffs
didn't outshoot somebody to oblivion and i want to talk about that it started that way it did it
was what nine three at one point and then vegas got one back on the fourth shot for all the for
all the um for all the talk we've had about John Tortorella over these past few weeks I think is
exhausting in terms of narrative and storytelling and the microphone you don't understand him I
don't understand him I do understand he's a good hockey coach yeah and I know that much because
Carolina did what Carolina does they adjusted and Carolina never really got it back I I think um one
of the things that stands out to me is if I'm any other team in the league I'm copying Carolina's
or not carolina um vegas's penalty kill and i know that and i i very much understand that um
you know there's some special players there and they are active skaters and all of that
but what has always pissed me off as a leaf fan is how about we just collapse in why don't we
just let them have it and then they'll take a shot and we might tip it with our skate and put it in
uh what what what they always do is oh you mean the leaf's power no i'm talking about the leaf's
penalty kill they always good it's not active enough not like this it was really good yeah
it's not good enough that's the thing we praise the most about the leaf yeah but that's a low bar
i'm telling you they are aggressive penalty vegas's penalty kill is far more aggressive
than anybody's ever seen they got a man going at if you have the puck they're skating straight at
you and they're and they're covering the passing lane it's stylistic right so in 2023 this this
was really enhanced the leafs power play kicked tampa's ass because tampa was passive florida
was aggressive and they had no response for it so i i understand what you're saying and but now
i understand carolina's penalty or power plays awful i get that and that is weird that it
legitimately sucks it's weird it's bad it's terrible i wish they could decline penalties
i honestly right at five on five it's gonna cost them a championship yeah i knew the game was over
when they pulled the goalie because i was like they can't score with the man advantage it's
going to cost him a championship you know one of the most mystifying thing a virtually undefeated
team heading into the stanley cup final cannot get a shot it's disgusting we got a goal a shot
on the power play can i just say that thing all they do is shoot the puck yes and as leaf fans
we recognize when a penalty or a power play is dead uh because we see it in the playoffs every
year uh when we make it it's it you can you can tell the the other thing for carolina that i
no actually adam uh the power play was good the whole time oh yeah for sure tell me about it look
at where it finished no you're just you're just stupid toronto head and no power play was good
the whole time and the people on it sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to
get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because
here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use
my floor to
rappel down and clean all the windows,
but they never clean my windows. Uh-oh.
And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio
window. You can do that yourself. And I'm like, well,
hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have
the stuff! Because you've got to have that scraper
thing and the washer thing.
The chemicals. You've got to have the right chemicals.
See, that's what I'm saying. That's why I
used TaskRabbit, and I
employed a tasker. Here's the thing.
TaskRabbit connects you with taskers in your area

Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of
life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear
of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca i think i think jess what's interesting for me in watching
carolina versus the vegas defense is the the flow of carolina in the offensive zone you know anaheim
was able to in their second round basically dominate that sort of puck flow right but when
And as soon as they hit Vegas, they couldn't do it.
I'm sorry, first round, excuse me.
When they played Edmonton, Anaheim could gain the blue line,
cycle, cycle, cycle, cycle, shot, shot, shot, shot, shot.
Then they played Vegas, they couldn't do it.
And the same thing happened to the third round.
Vegas interrupted that.
And I felt, guys, that Carolina was just not able to get any sort of established set
in the offensive zone the way that they're used to.
And I don't know how that seems to be their game when they're playing offense.
I don't know how they adjust that.
like how you can't just throw that plan out the window rods out there just trying stuff there was
there was one power play earlier in the game where it was like 30 seconds in and i'm saying
all the players as they get the puck and i'm like this is the second unit like and they they played
them for like a minute 20 yep or something like that like why he's just he's just out there trying
stuff yep yeah it's it's listen listen this is a great game series are long to me this is just an
inevitable death march to vegas wins it you tweeted it already it's already set in stone i tweeted it
after 20 minutes against colorado i i feel worse for hurricanes fans because they're going to be
the last ones to figure this out it's it's vegas is winning the cup now jesse i don't know in the
third round yeah Montreal beat up on Carolina in the first game yes do you think that could happen
again well it's it's different like this isn't Montreal this is a much better team in Vegas and
the thing that scares me the most if I'm Carolina is that the first period the first half of the
first period really uh by the end of it Vegas kind of got it going that looked like normal
Carolina Hurricanes hockey but once Vegas got its legs the thing that Carolina does so well
that's their man defense vegas is just able to pass and skate through it in the offensive zone
and what no team was ever able to do in these playoffs that's that's ottawa philly and montreal
um they were all of those teams weren't able to set up in the offensive zone just skate around
the man defense of the hurricanes and vegas seems like hey we can just do this there's no problem
they're so big and skilled that anything everything that the hurricanes are trying to do in terms of
just cardio work and and getting at these guys isn't really effective like it has been against
those other teams so if carolina's losing that matchup i'm a little scared because that's their
bread and butter yeah yeah they did have their chances they could have that game could have gone
either way yeah honestly um the series isn't over it's going to be long but is it the first
impressions yeah vegas is winning and that's why i'm not too concerned about the other side of the
the offensive side for Carolina looked okay.
I thought they got four goals.
They did enough.
And like the stall goal is really good.
The Ehlers breakaways were awesome.
It's the defensive side where they're usually like,
oh,
we can just put up two and shut down everything.
Vegas seems to understand how to crack through when they set up the
offensive zone to do their own stuff and get those shots on goal that
other teams aren't able to do.
For as poor as I thought Freddie Anderson was,
it's like William Carlson alone in front of the net.
uh brett howden crashes the net able to get a tip uh keegan colasar i don't think gets a point
but shea theodore is able to score because he crashes he crashes the net and there was another
player they scored so many goals i forget who's who barb well the hurdle goal is one-on-one because
gossespierre loses man hurdle loses it was a lot of really it's a sloppy game yeah yeah carolina
a lot of really uncharacteristic that's not them and that's so that's where the troubling thing is
Like if they're not playing that level and standard of defense that they're used to playing, like it could it could be Vegas.
And if they get it back on track, which last series they did.
OK, well, this is a better team than Montreal and you just yard sale the whole game.
Yeah. Yeah.
I don't know a lot of people.
If you watched every Carolina Hurricanes game, you probably know this, but they were the they allowed the second highest comebacks after leading in the first period.
uh this regular season really can i give you i'll give you the crazy stat what i'll give you the
list of the bottom teams and tell me uh if you can point the outlier uh the calgary flames they
lost 10 games after leading after the first that makes sense the chicago blackhawks lost seven that
makes sense the toronto maple leafs lost six i saw them the st louis blues lost six not surprised
and then the bottom five also includes the hurricanes who lost nine games after leading
uh when leading after the first so you're saying that the hurricanes could have been even better
yeah yeah they had even better year actually tossed away a lot of games when leading after
the first period that's second most in the entire league don't worry adam i got it who is the goalie
for most of those games i don't know i can't tell you that's what i'd like to know if it's
bussy or anderson bussy did struggle after signing that extension he did that if vegas uh wins game
to all right bus he's in really you gotta put it in a gap no you can't you can't do what colorado
did and and try the the next the other goalie in the last game or do you just go down with the
shit i'm ride or die right now freddie gets tired guys he does he does and i'm pro-free right now
he objectively should not be but he does we know he does 15 shots an evening yeah not last night
he's 35 man it's a lot a lot up and down steve do you think adam sat up last night in his bed
like it was christmas morning the next day being like i can't wait to know i hate it i can't i
can't wait i told you that that's why i get text messages in the top right corner of my screen
when i'm streaming yeah and i'm like where is he where's there he is but was i wrong no you weren't
and i was waiting for you and i was the one when eeler scored i was running around my house like
it was the leaps like i i'm listen i am so pro fucking carolina on this series you can't even
i won't even pretend to be unbiased but vegas are unbelievable they're so good and i'm a little
concerned i am and i've seen this movie man i've seen it uh question for the okay and let's also
talk about this the fact is carolina all the way and i'm sorry to cut you off carolina all the way
to the to the finals had the easiest matchups let's just call it what it is this is by far
the best team they're playing those are gonna have to bring it up it is it's your by far it's
the best man adam is right but they know ottawa ottawa was a fantastic team if you look at the
goals um expected goals the chart and like how everybody finished the regular season
the top four teams are the teams that were in the final four and then the fifth team is the
ottawa center i too have coped their their underlying numbers were so good and i think
they just went up against a really good team yeah you're right um and uh that's because they
couldn't get their goaltending shit and then who else is better in the east uh montreal beat those
two teams they did uh and then carolina had to go through that team okay carolina we play okay hold
on we play those game sevens tampa bay buffalo play those 10 times how many times does montreal
win six six get out of here doesn't matter like it also doesn't matter listen hey as the least
fan i can tell you you only get to play them once i think carolina can do this i think they can win
this i think that they're gonna have to elevate their play to a level that they have not had to
do they could absolutely win this they're not going to but they could absolutely and i i hope
no hurricanes fan misconstrues that it's purely the hockey gods this has nothing to do with you
no making fun of you purely the hockey gods question for the class you can blame the leafs
actually if you lose it's actually our fault if you lose legitimately it's our fault legitimately
is like not everything is about the leafs this is it is a little um drew asked me during the stream
who cares you're right i'm kidding moving on no he's like is seth jarvis slow and i was like uh
i don't think so he hurt maybe
i almost feel like i shouldn't single him out because like well jesse wanted to earlier too
i think he's worth the line sucks that's the thing the line is ineffective does just especially
play like i thought was out there trying stuff but it was ultimately ineffective yeah aho
may not have played and jarvis definitely did play he looked poor um so like that lines
as far as name brand right so vegas is all about getting the big name those are the three biggest
names that carolina has up front anyway and what were they hall was active stankhoven was active
blake was active eelers was obviously very good i like martinook i like stall i thought william
carrier was very effective for them they got a lot of great performances in that game chatfield
had such a good game uh where on earth is the most highly paid stacked line that carolina has
and the question i'm going to ask the class is is it all right to criticize carolina's best
players for not rising to this moment i just can't wait till you're blamed for running them
out of raleigh i would love to run them out of raleigh into true ideally north yeah to the blue
and white yeah i know i think rod brendamore is saying the same thing that you're saying in his
post game he needs more out of his top guys yeah and like that line hasn't shown up this entire
playoffs it's true and they've won despite that because the second line is the best line in hockey
right now but eventually this thing needs to change because vegas is deep that's a team that's
four lines deep and they're all cooking so what do you carolina's not the same so what what is
that forget other than hey we need you to score goals like what does that actually physically
look like guys so this is the difficult question because like why keep them together at this point
wow because you can't break up the second line you cannot and then it's not so you're elevating
someone from the third line which i don't think you want to really mess up either like these are
the these are what this is what you're asking for out of these players like you we've reached the
point where it's like you're sebastian ajo we expect more out of you it's not on us to fix it
you need to go out and deliver could you bring ehlers up so ehlers is a third liner i wonder
he is and he had two goals last night and he's a good playmaker i wonder if he's being limited
because remember he did have an injury i wonder if they're limited but like it's the cops i don't
think you care anymore you have to empty the tank you have to you're here and there's no tomorrow
well there is a tomorrow there's there's a few only a few more there's not many tomorrows left
yep right so martin hook and ehlers installed been so good though they have no that's the thing
only thing I can really think to do
is do you swap Jarvis and Ehlers
but there
that's all I got
can you get Ehlers on the right and Jarvis on the left
because that's the problem
Ehlers is playing left wing
no no Jarvis is left
Jarvis is playing on the right
Svesha is on the left
oh they're listed as opposite
oh my bad
I thought all the times I noticed Jarvis he was on the left
anyway I mean I'm sure they can
figure it out
they can play and maybe if carter hart doesn't make that glove save early we're not talking about
it like it's thomas it was not about the puck not going in like it's actually about the five
because when hurl scored when he finally scored in the conference final it was like okay now he's
gonna score a bunch and he has right he's got two or three a little bit yeah you just it's just that
one thing and then everything kind of comes together maybe maybe that's how it works but i
just like when guys aren't scoring i'm like okay what else are they doing like the habs had a few
of those guys like watching them all play off long i'm like well they're not scoring but they're
doing other things well and that's fine what were the positives last night for jarvis arajo
and to a degree svetch but like i feel like he's the most effective of a very ineffective line
it's tough and if that line doesn't show up they will not win the cup
like no shot i agree again i think vegas is gonna win i think carolina absolutely can win
if that line isn't better than they are they're toast yeah interesting most effective player
without putting the puck in the back of the net on either team is jack eichel yeah i thought he
had an unbelievable game he's second in the playoffs in points he has two goals yep cannot
receive a pass or his teammates can't find him like what do you mean well he also doesn't shoot
he could have had like four goals last night but without actually getting a shot attempt off
because the puck never actually did find his stick um he's he's always in good position skates
unbelievably well uh really dynamic skater but yeah couldn't could not get a shot off yeah it
was an unreal game by theodore too yeah bounce back game from him because the the first play
there bounce back game within the game yeah within the game yeah bounce back within those 60 minutes
it was awesome and then the mitch marner block at the end yeah yep drew drew and i were like okay
how can we have fun with this because like i'll just be honest it didn't look like he did it on
purpose no but it whatever he did it yeah yeah you know you know what you know what real shot
blockers do they always try to take it off the inside of their trailing knee like but he blocked
it who cares he got his body in front of it and that's all that matters yep yeah yeah that's all
i got you're upset at it no well i mean yeah i can upset him i don't want that i can upset him
right now i don't want everyone's discovering that mitch marner's kryptonite is least fans
hoping that he does well and uh they don't and that's part of why he succeeded in these plans
you know that he opened up to jack eichel though right got some scars he did good for him was that
a trump rally or what that was that was one of the more enjoyable neutral fan game one of a stanley
a final i remember i agree like i don't remember a nine goal affair back and forth a winner towards
the end with like minutes left to come back in the middle of it and then a electric atmosphere
in carolina like that was a really good hockey game it was fun it was great really liked it uh
and fun stream and it leaves the door open for many many many good things i was watching the
first 25 minutes of your stream uh until they dropped the puck oh my holy lord i just watched
to see him dance for fucking half an hour dude that was like listen i like i like what i do
but like the chat was getting pissed yeah they're like okay game one i think some people can
understand game two stop it the concert that they had they're still airy it's like 8 15 and they're
still showing this fucking country music going i don't care about this person with their t-shirt
tucked into their jeans show me the game yep i i actually make a point with hayden i'm like
do we when's puck drop yeah and i don't start the stream until right before it i even hate
talking over the national anthem because i think the anthem is such a waste of time on television
if you want to sing it at a game i still think it's a waste of time there too but i'm in the
minority and that and i've accepted it why does sportsnet espn and anybody else tsn doesn't air
it amazon doesn't air it why do they air it other than well we've always done it this way
i will listen as i have criticisms for espn's panel and i have some criticisms for how sports
net structures their panels their panels are more interesting than the anthem i don't give a fuck
i want i want give me pump pump me up before the game shoot the fireworks off oh my god we're here
this is crazy go back to the studio while the anthem's playing and then when i see the ice i
want the puck about to drop and the ref giving his terrible speech beforehand i want that and
his body cam that they never use they have the body they have this this body cam strapped to
this man oh and they use it one fucking time the entire game where meanwhile the hf is using it all
the time and it's great why is the world hockey championship stuffing the nhl into a locker
like that's ridiculous that's crazy i will say like there is something to the anthems adding to
the to the weight the gravity of the moment the drama the drama of the moment like i could get
behind a game one anthem i don't think you need to televise all of them right right i'm sitting
there it's a tuesday night in january and i'm like you know you don't need to be doing this
Especially for the Canadian broadcast.
There's no Canadian anthem.
Like, what are we doing?
I've heard the Star Spangled Banner.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Like, think about that.
Like, do you think Americans would be like,
you know what?
There's only a Canadian anthem.
Let's make sure we get it on TV.
Yeah.
Like, are you fucking serious, guys?
Come on.
Football players don't even come out for the anthem.
I make fun of this on the stream,
but like what they do in American cities,
I'm sure Canada does this sometimes,
but it's definitely less.
They'll have someone do the Canadian anthem,
super half-assed,
and then like trumpets and flags and they bring out the new better singer who's dressed way more
fancily and it's like a fighter jet yeah the real anthem oh that's the tampa does that they bring
out they're one of the worst military they're like oh canada yeah fuck it anyway here's the
military and then they bring definitely one of the worst offense oh they're embarrassing for that
and and honestly was that was why it was such a nice touch when carolina actually had somebody
sing francophone versions against montreal yeah and everyone was a really nice touch oh that was
a nice thing to do yeah and it's so unexpected because we don't even expect americans to know
that we are a dual a dual lingual lingual country and lingual and company just like yeah and company
we're a corporation here do you think baseball teams are like oh it's the fucking blue jays
blue jays are coming god damn it this is gonna take so much longer well a lot of these people
have never heard the canadian national anthem before and you know they haven't because the way
they're singing it you're like oh boy we're getting sidetracked no pregame it's our podcast
we can do whatever we want no game has done the right thing over the last couple years and they
just extend their panel right up till puck drop and then they show yeah you know why every time
i stream their games i get thrown off yeah because i'm like oh yeah here's the game because the
panel's good yeah because the panel's and the anthem is boring it's boring it's bad tv summer's

um two candidates for the leafs head coaching job emerged this morning and the internet is like you
know what it's the insider's fault um toronto maple leafs according to darren drager coaching
search is getting more interesting sources say patrick waugh and peter laviolette are a part of
this week's stage of interviews now i know that people really wanted david carl i know they really
want you see a focus i think is that how you say his name you see a focus a hocus i think maybe
it's my star wars coming up oh no okay nope this is our semi-annual tradition finish listeners
send us voice notes yeah yeah actually please do i would love to know we need it now you see
was the guy that he coached um kitchener to their championship memorial cup with uh oh memorial cup
with jack pridham who scored in every game apparently sam o'reilly yeah rest of the future
of the lightning i hate my life so um leaf fans reaction to this has been uh mixed and you always
know when leaf fans don't like something when they go fuck you man who delivered that message
and uh actually click click do shoot the messenger yeah now i am with them to a point
i'm with them to a point because i am also a leaf fan and i would also i'm on the side of
i'd like somebody new uh-huh peter laviolette has i have i held zero interest in peter laviolette
i i i could not be less i could not be more apathetic about a guy like than peter laviolette
And that's not to say that he hasn't had a great career.
He's had an amazing career.
I just don't understand that.
You hate his family.
No, I think you just, you interview him, sure.
And if that's all this is, that's great.
But if Pete Lavia lets the guy that they hire,
I will have questions right up until puck drop,
and then we'll see what happens.
Patrick was interesting because everybody's like,
That's a good word.
Patrick was coming to town.
And let's be honest.
Yeah, like what, like Santa?
Yeah.
Except all he delivers is ass kickings.
Well, Patrick Waugh has had one good season as a coach.
Yeah, the first one.
The first one in Colorado where he won the Jack Adams.
My interest in Patrick Waugh is...
One of the craziest Jack Adams of all time.
Coaching record.
I'm just pulling it up here, okay?
On HockeyDB.
They...
He's made the playoffs twice.
Okay.
His first season in Colorado.
Lost.
Lost in seven.
his first season in new york with the islanders lost in five everyone so the reason he won the
jack adams if i'm not mistaken colorado finished third in the league they lost in the first round
yes actually it says they finished first in the league but i holy they were even better than i
thought they were riding a big pdo blender bender when pdo was just coming in and people were like
this is bad and everybody's like yeah your stats are dumb look at colorado and then they got wiped
and it shut down um yeah i mean he's got a career 130 92 and 24 records so 577 but his finishes are
first seventh sixth third well i guess it's divisional so maybe colorado wasn't first
first seventh sixth third six six no thank you now do i like that patrick waugh could
instill a heartbeat in this team i asked you on the last episode i said without max domi in the
lineup who's going to be the personality who drags them into the fight Patrick would do that
but do they need another Barker because Berube was a bit of a Barker Barker and like pot of coffee
thrower and like like if you don't play well he might beat you up William Nylander is in danger
like in legitimate he's got to call Pierre Engvall and ask what happened you know
Pierre Engvall just disappeared.
I think you got to interview these people
because they're out there.
Sure.
But I genuinely don't have any interest
in either of them based on their previous record.
Now, I say that with this as a caveat.
I said the same thing about Rick Tockett
when he was hired in Vancouver.
I said, what has this guy done?
And you look at what he did with the Coyotes
and you're like, that's the guy?
But I saw him take that Vancouver team,
which was extremely talented, to the second round.
and almost beat edmonton and then i saw him take a dead to rights philadelphia squad
and put them in the second round this year but is he gonna call easton cowan fat and bench him
well i mean how else can you get a message through the team
hey hey let me tell you fat fat fat and cowan you know what i'm saying hey hey no we'll work
on it yeah we'll workshop that listen not easton cardio that's for sure oh hey if
all we did was soullessly make content and we were just like whatever's best for the clicks
patrick waugh would be fantastic for us yeah however i would like the leafs to win games
and i think this would make them not do that and i i think we've all lost our minds that
we're even thinking about this i don't know if you guys remember the press conference
when lou lamorello hired patrick waugh i do not and they were like hey how did you come to this
conclusion and i listen i've interviewed lou uh with alan which was awesome and lou was phenomenal
right jess like he was oh yeah just an incredible show yeah you're surprised at how open he is at
just telling stories yeah because he wouldn't say shit when he was here in toronto he's complete
opposite talking the media but what his rationale was at the time was well we did research and we
found that coaches that are on their second stint are more likely to win a cup that was the main
driver of what he would say to the media where do the islanders put the banner this is my point
and i interviewed actually weirdly enough a couple of weeks ago on our last agent provocateur
patrick was agent oh the guy that is setting up this interview was was the previous he's the guest
on ap so if you want to talk about executive this guy's interesting man that's patrick's agent
and uh now he obviously didn't say anything about patrick in this but i do think
i do think that there will be if this is not a dynamic hire if this is not a hire that gets
people excited i think people are going to be pretty pissed if this is a pete laviolette
if this is a patrick waugh you're gonna have to do a whole lot of selling if you're the leafs and
do they want do they need that or do you get guy who just coached a team to the memorial cup
and could be exciting and new man let me tell you that guy was patrick wall by the way oh he did do
that to you he won actually won two memorial cups yeah he has the last time he won a memorial cup
the next season he was coaching the islanders alexander radulov so there you go yeah yeah that
was the sorry no that's fair um i forgot that that's actually it's a very good point um
oh no i i feel like last week i was like you know what i'm still not sure about john jacob but
all the things he's done so far i'm on board and then he makes two hires uh judd bracket being one
of them and i've been getting messages for the last 48 hours people going you don't understand
how good this this pickup is oh okay great this is really good we we actually we were open about
the fact that we didn't understand if it was a good pickup or not and we weren't going to pretend
to be judd x but yeah we were not judd bracket experts yeah and it's almost like they were like
the vibes around this team are too good let's interview patrick well i think what i think
what's happening here is the asterisk on everything coming out of the leafs coaching
search is that they are casting a wide net yeah i think there were recent reports they've had 15
zoom interviews scheduled over last week and like this week okay so they're i love that talking to
everybody yeah so you're gonna get names like laviolette and patrick wall who if they land on
them that's a whole different conversation we'll talk about that but the names coming out you're
gonna hear a lot of people and you're gonna hear everybody i always ask hey what do you do all day
interviews that's good sure you're doing stuff i'm into it i'm into the interview but don't you
friggin dare i think i think john uh chica has proven that he's a doer of things he has been
doing stuff since he's taken the job i will say this with laviolette he did take the rangers to
the round the third round before they said fuck this team man just what what did they do to that
team i know good reason he did i'm so he's he's had recent success but i don't know man that
doesn't get me excited what will get me excited is wins more than anything but
it'd be like if the Leafs hired Mike Sullivan I'd be like oh who cares I'll be about as excited
as being like mid-loop on a roller coaster and the ride shuts down like I'll be like well we
might be okay but it's not but it's not guaranteed yeah and also I'm scared so let me ask you this
what kind of style would have them play what kind of style would LaViolette have them play
that's a i feel like laviolette is a lot more uh dynamic um i i feel like i don't i never really
did know much about the identity of the patrick waugh islanders i wasn't sure what they were
going to be either i think that was confused by the fact that i don't know if their their
front office did either yeah and like what are you did he not like quit on the avalanche when
he was there there was some sort of dispute some contract thing or something i don't remember what
it was and he's just like yeah i'm leaving he did quit yeah sort of rick talking he quit
no no he quit yes i don't know man okay patrick wah yeah really okay yeah so uh so there's those
now uh speaking of uh peter labia labia let's former team uh the nashville predators they i
don't know you know they went on this exhaustive search guys the nashville predators went on an
exhaustive search they searched so hard high and low and then high again and then they they spoke
to chris mcfarland for 10 minutes and said here's 11 billion dollars there were there's no there's
no way that they could have spoken to him beforehand and had this deal ready to go there
whispers about this nearly a month ago i'll tell you that so when i mean it was tweeted steve i
think everybody knew yeah no i heard about it but long before that even and i was like i think
you're stupid i think this is probably wrong and bullshit yeah they also tried to get eric
tulsky but were denied permission to talk to him at the uh by this year yeah like apparently that's
those are two guys mcfarlane and tulsky and then they had to wait obviously until the abs were
eliminated to actually get mcfarland but so they the i i applaud the predators for like
going out and poaching well okay but hold on it was only announced yesterday that they'd given
permission to chris mcfarland but it's pretty clear that they no no so the they that was just
like when it was released by the insiders and everything but they had given permission i think
sometime last week so mid mid playoffs he's talking no when they were because they've been
eliminated they've been eliminated for like a week now okay yeah so like once they were eliminated
they officially uh were talking to mcfarlane and then he was in nashville on monday and he met the
owner and they had dinner and everything that's where they confirmed all the deals okay but there
have been machinations about this for a while yeah like i don't think anybody's uh trying to
cover up that yeah obviously they were they were talking to each other so like i was i was making
jokes about this comparing it to the vegas situation with bruce cassidy and people were
like you're a dumbass this is totally different no it's the exact same everyone stop official
permission might have been after they were eliminated this stop it no this is here's
the thing chris still works this was weeks ago stop it you were so you're so right to compare
to that situation because the color i know avalanche had to give permission to the national
predators to let him go work that job they could have said no just like how the hurricane said no
to them about talking to eric tulsky and they have allowed him to go make a bunch of money and
get a bigger job title because they were willing to let him go but he is under contract for one
more year mcfarlane is well would have been under contract for one more year and they were in every
right under that contract to keep him for one more year yeah and they're not dicks the difference
they have allowed him to go mcfarlane is not a fired guy in his 60s hoping to pleading get one
more job before he retires begging and pleading the world on every podcast to work again yes
and vegas is doing that the nhl was so funny so like yesterday i'm sure we're gonna get to it
they're like oh vegas is well within their right and i'm just like no we all know that
but they're assholes exactly we know what's been happening and that if you could step in you would
of but you can't it doesn't mean like they don't look really bad yeah why are we all uh on on the
on the colorado avalanche uh joe sackick will be gm again and i think a lot of people are thrilled
about that um because he did a pretty great job the first time yeah uh i believe they won with
him as gm did they not yeah so mcfarland mcfarland agm yeah so uh then beyond that uh are you guys
excited about the outlook for nashville i don't i don't know i don't know um i don't know
like chris mcfarland i i still can't get a read on the guy like you inherited the pieces that
got you there and you inherited a team that won the cup and you know had he come in and won
then i'd be like yeah okay and he clearly wasn't the ultimate decision maker well like at all
no but they they did so well in the wedgewood trade that they're like we gotta hire that guy
that guy fleeced us let's go so you're indifferent i don't i don't know i don't know that nashville
i'll be honest with you it's maybe less about chris more about nashville they haven't made
good decisions for the past five years um from their free agent signings which i actually
applauded at the time uh to um uh their general manager choice they've been very chaotic they
Yeah, they've been a mess.
And that's the thing I keep hearing behind the scenes is they're a total fucking mess upstairs.
So if Chris is going to step in there, his first order of business is to straighten it out.
I think they could get pretty good pretty quick.
I know there's work to do.
There's work to do, and it might not happen this year.
But Nashville was a destination for years.
Of course, but they had an identity.
Yes.
and all he has to do is reinstill something anything but like people around the league talk
i'm sure last off season maybe the last couple people around the league are looking at the
president going what the hell are they doing right like it's okay it's a great place to live
the taxes whatever country music we get it country yeah we get it but also i play hockey for a living
what are you doing and is your team any good and if they're not well there's other places i'm sure
could play the guitar and you know dallas yeah i'll go to dallas who consistently does most
things pretty well i like how you can only play the guitar in certain no in nashville and dallas
and that that is it that's it right and riley's like i can't play the guitar in seattle no team
in arizona anymore so you can't do it there they've barred guitar playing in seattle i can't
go there can't do it now the home of grunge cannot play the guitar here only in that um i i just feel
like i don't know for me uh it's i just don't have a read on it i i do think that you can't
call the predators and fleece them anymore like that will probably be the case i'd be surprised
um but yeah i mean they've got a lot to sort out here i i think it starts with you gotta
you gotta get some centers if you're gonna hang on to this core i feel like they gotta move marcia
so i feel like steven stamkos had a great back half of the season last year that people kind
it didn't pay attention to which is why you should try to move him now and at eight million bucks
uh that's attractive think about a team like the leafs just just put the leafs in there gotta win
now gotta fucking win here's a 40 goal scorer who's 36 but he's on a cost control deal next
year in the year after probably won't cost you much and can play sometimes in your top six you
may want to limit his minutes um probably you know power play specialist at this point don't
expecting to play a lot of defense but if you can get that for relatively cheap in terms of assets
out i think there's a lot of teams that would take that and i think if if nashville has a lot
of open cap space they are a destination a year or two ago we were looking at the march so deal
going what do they even do with that and i'm like 5.5 oh my god that's a great deal things have
changed so fast well and and the other thing they got to stop doing is treating ryan o'reilly like
he has a no trade clause uh chris mcfarla didn't sign that deal uh ryan o'reilly is an extremely
useful player and you know what he's got you talk about they talk about matthew nize as being one of
the most valuable trade ships you can have in the league because he's a young guy he's a big force
he's like a brick shithouse i don't even know what that is and he has no trade protection ryan
o'reilly is a center who's won a cup won the con smith and is a by all accounts a phenomenal
teammate just doesn't like doesn't like to be in a media heavy market let's do the vegas thing
why Nashville is well within their right to trade this player why wouldn't you try to get as much
as you can for Ryan O'Reilly because because if you're Chris McFarland you have to come in here
and not be sentimental you got to send this shit out the door because you're stubborn and watch too
many episodes of Yellowstone like he doesn't have trade protection guys what do you do that's my
point though is you can't and a guy like you need to have guys who are younger who can play in those
roles and I know you know Ryan O'Reilly is a good mentor and that sort of thing he's on the last
of his deal if you don't trade him till the trade deadline fine but you need to go and find value
for a guy like that you do yeah um i also you know there's a lot of teams looking for goaltending
help and if you really want to do a turnover first off the dumbest thing they ever did
was move out uh who was the goalie they sent to san jose ask her yeah stupid you got i hope they
have a goal in their system i haven't done it but you see sorrows could have tremendous value if he
would move eustace annan goodbye uh no i saw what happened to you in colorado you're gone he had a
very good back half that he's poetic eustace how dare you he gone no he's a former avalanche man
he's gone he kept he gone he kept are you scared of the anchors because like the stamkos has an
anchor soros has an anchor like these guys have full no move clauses yeah marcia so as well
Forsberg as well I would do a rebuild and build it around guys like Luke Evangelista I like him a
lot I think he fits a window it'd be funny if McFarlane comes in and likes him even less I know
they gave him so much shit over that deal they're gonna pay they're gonna pay through the nose for
Luke Evangelista because they didn't lock him up long term last summer another one of Barry Trotz's
dumb moves which is why they're gonna sign him to five years and pay him five million bucks are you
he was unbelievable it's for stints for them this year Adam it sounds like you're pretty low on
i i'm really low i don't know what the fuck they are guy like brady martin though i'm happy to
build around him so this is this is where you and i i think maybe disagree a little bit because i
don't know what the fuck they are either but they're i know what they're going to be and
that's better than this right like what they currently are is ridiculous i chris mcfarland
is going to give them legitimacy put a pin in this put a pin in this we're going to check back
in december six months from now pull the pen out i don't i don't get down he is what i like about
chris mcfarland is he's aggressive and he tries to make deals happen and whatever um i'd like to
see what that looks like they got a lot of work to do and i just the other part of me is do you
get the sense and i'm not close enough to this to know do you get the sense that that dressing room
really is like this they play the guitar i don't know i have no idea i have no idea they seem to
be having a pretty good time by the end of the season they were in the fight some veteran guys
i i wouldn't be surprised if uh they were able to sell high on guys like stamkos and marches so and
like just yeah that's what i would do sell high and then have the cap room they got to be realistic
on like listen i i don't think they're terrible i also don't think they're particularly good
those players don't match their window at all and this is the thing so if mcfarland comes in
the best thing he can do in my mind is go here's what we're going to be we know what we are which
is uh uh nebulous uh what we're going to be is a b and c remember that the the laviolette coached
predators that went to the finals that we saw in the finals in nashville shout out kevin um
that team was defense heavy goaltender you know extremely good goaltending uh and could score a
couple of goals right obviously sydney crosby and malcolm kind of beat them out for that but
that was a very very good team what are the predators going to be going forward
i think that's the first step after you clean up the front office chaos can i sprinkle a little
cayenne on you give it to me yosi like move him oh he there's a guy i mean would he move i don't
know it's i'm just saying uh you get a new gm everything's on the table right yeah i looked
at philip forsberg i'm like if if ryan o'reilly's agent comes to me and goes but barry trotz promised
i go i don't fucking care you have to be this with this roster you got to be mean and a few
people are going to look at you sideways but again like uh it pandora's box has been open for a very
very long time and if vegas wins the cup yep i mean you're frankly going to look foolish
if you're just like but i promised him
are you a child that's that's insanity why would you promise that why would you promise that in
the first place which tells me barry should never have been well bruce cassidy shouldn't have signed
that deal all right well ryan o'reilly shouldn't have signed that deal that's insane of him to do
i don't know if you guys know this or not but reproducing makes you sentimental
makes you soft um like looking at looking at your kids and then my mom sent me a picture of my
daughter sleeping at my mom's house the other day and she had her peppa pig pajamas on with her
peppa pig comforter and she had the blanket that i used what was my blankie in the thing it was a
beautiful thing and i think that would go really well in an aura frame and that's why i think for
father's day you should probably consider getting yourself one of the best-selling uh well the
best-selling or frame there is which is the carver mat frame name number one by wire cutter not only
does it do pictures and not only can you upload from anywhere in the world also does videos with
sound yes which is a very big deal uh 35 off we're going to give you that right now with the
carver mat frames from aura sdp is the code so it is aura frames dot ca promo code sdp and support

and what better way than with a delicious pret organic coffee starting at just one dollar all
day every day now until december 31st you gotta try breakfast at a w at participating
a and w locations in ontario um nhl hrr is going up somewhere between seven and a half to eight
billion dollars uh and why does that matter well if you look at the percentage increase gentlemen
hrr is hockey related revenue by the way um that is a 25 percent increase in the last three years
six billion was what it was and six billion was a lot and it was a surprising figure when it came
out because it was post-covid everybody's like wait a second the revenues were supposed to go
down and they didn't alan our friend uh alan walsh uh who will be doing a show with this
weekend it looks like because he's down at the draft combine so he's coming to toronto we're
going to do it in studio alan tweeted out yesterday that the money owing back to players
because remember, they're not paying escrow anymore.
The money owing back to players
could be in excess of $500 million.
And what does that mean?
What does that mean?
People are like, what the hell does that mean?
50-50 rev share thing.
And what they always do in the NHL
is they calculated a couple years back.
And so they're always a couple years behind
in their accounting
so they can get all the receipts in, okay?
So let's say Steve is a hockey player
that made a million dollars
but is now out of the league.
there is a chance that 500 million dollars coming back into the league you're proportionally
going to get paid more than the million dollars you were paid and you're just going to get a check
it's going to arrive out of nowhere okay stupid question is the 500 million evenly distributed
between all the places it's based on what you made so essentially it's the if if the pool was
500 million and you made 10 million uh you will based on the total salaries of the league they're
going to do the math and you will get this percentage more so it is it is always and i
know that's a bit of a complicated way of saying it but that's the way the deal is structured just
like the other way which was if the league revenues were down players paid 24 25 percent
sometimes to the league to make sure that the revenue split was 50 50 now it's going to be the
owners paying, say, 25% more in your contract, if you're a million dollar player, you're not in the
league, you could just get a $250,000 check. Man, like that. So what's going to be interesting
going forward is we've heard a lot of bitching from billionaires, which is hilarious, about how
they don't want to pay what the cap is going to be going forward. And I'm here to tell you
that they're all liars. They will all spend to the cap. If they don't spend to the cap,
there's a market inefficiency
the Leafs can exploit
because they will
because at least
Rodgers will spend.
We'll give them that.
On players.
On players.
There are teams though
that are saying
well we won't do this.
So for those teams
what will be interesting
is anybody on a
long-term contract
is going to be owed
a bunch of extra money
by these teams
so these long-term deals
even though they give you
financial security
can be a bit of a liability
because you then have to
make these lump sum
payments out of nowhere.
You know growing up
The Leafs obviously didn't win a cup, but they weren't a total laughingstock.
No.
And part of that was there was no salary cap.
They spent a ton of money.
They were $60 or $70 million 25 years ago.
So it'd be pretty chill if they got back to doing that.
Well, anyway, I think it's going to be fascinating to see how that plays out.
Now, Gary Bettman did do a press conference yesterday, along with Bill Daley.
So I'm going to do this beforehand.
Steven.
What?
I'm not going to play the clips because I know Gary Bettman's voice drives you nuts.
Yes.
but what i am going to ask you to do is not no hate every answer because it's gary we do need
to talk about the answers that he gave and they were good ones okay so you can't go i can't be
like so gary betman said he go off hawk i'm walking out okay all right yeah so let's start
with the the headline which is russian hockey players will be returning to international hockey
sort of the nhl did not unveil russia as one of its five teams set to compete in the brand new
three-on-three all-star showcase at the 2027 games but russian athletes have been given the
green light to join the league's clunkily named rest of the world squad so that'll be team russia
canada united states sweden finland and rest of the world and it'll be a three-on-three tournament
Can you explain all the details of the all-star format?
I'm getting to it.
So it'll be February 6th, UBS Arena.
We'll be preceded, meaning it'll happen before,
the 25 and under skills competition,
which will be great, highlighting hockey's young stars,
because let's be honest, the veterans don't give a shit.
And here's what they said about it.
We've been very clear at the Players Association,
our players, this is Marty Walsh,
our players want the best on best
in a perfect world we'd love to see them back in the competition uh russians were denied entry into
the 2025 nhl four seasons matt face off because of being prohibited to at all double ihf events
four seasons uh four seasons four nations four seasons you can tell i'm a billionaire uh and
the nhl has yet to make a decision on whether russia will be involved in the 2028 world cup
of hockey uh the all-star world team uses an nhl shield logo and there will be no use of russian
flags being incorporated into the event and bill daly said he spoke with the double ihf on tuesday
morning he relayed that hockey's international governing governing body did not anticipate a
boycott from the finn swedes or czechs if and when russia is invited back to international action
the fins this morning told everybody nobody called us nobody contacted us not from the nhl
not from the double ihf and our position is the same so so wait they got to reinstate the russians
well they are they're now the double ihf is now taking it on a case-by-case basis with the
russians coming back yeah coming back where'd they go well they were banned for because they
invaded ukraine oh so they stopped doing that no they didn't oh we're just tired now they just
don't care we're just tired yeah i think the whole idea is that while the invasion of the
ukraine is happening russia can't be using sports to use their logo or use their flag sorry and and
kind of sports wash for their country and that shouldn't just stop because the war hasn't stopped
so i think it'd be ridiculous if they let russia back into the international competitions to
compete under russia like that doesn't make i don't mind the players being the players in a
three-on-three competition i think is a little different i think you can allow the russian
players to compete in in nhl all-star skills competition as long as they're not using the
russian logo or flag you know there's not like hey this player's from russia and that's what
they're doing yeah tennis like they haven't banned russian players from playing but they're not
allowed to be from russia competing they don't compete on the russian flag when you're watching
the french open this week so i feel like it's it's fair to do the three-on-three competitions
having a team russia would be a whole other conversation i don't think the nhl should go
there yeah and i and i don't think the double ihf should and that's ridiculous that they would
walk back that and allow them in any tournament so i will read you the pr thing just so you guys
can understand the tournament and how it's going to work the 2027 nhl all-star game will feature
five teams canada finland sweden united states and world team compromised compromised comprised
of international players from countries
that are outside of those four
teams. Three-on-three round
robin exhibition tournament. Each team will
consist of 11 players, nine skaters, and two goalies.
The NHL and NHLPA will select
30 players from each
of the participating teams, Canada,
Finland, Sweden, United States, and
the world team for the 2027
NHL fan vote in order to avoid
any John Scott situations because we wouldn't want to have
fun now.
The voting for that will open in December. From that
list, fans will have the opportunity to select
eight players uh from each team the remaining three roster spots from each team one forward
one defense one goalie will be selected jointly by the nhl and the pa each team will play four
five minute games during the round robin tournament there will not be an overtime period or a shootout
in the event of a tie the top the the top two teams from the round robin will advance to a 10
minute final based on following point system two points for a win one point for a tie boo and zero
points for a loss the winning team will claim two million dollars um and then the skills competition
is this it will spotlight 10 young stars ages 25 or younger competing across eight events jointly
selected by the nhl and the pa fastest skater hardest shot passing challenge one-timer stick
handling accuracy shooting uh players will earn points based on their placement on blah blah blah
they will compete to take home the million dollar prize and on that note i do want to say on the
skills competition thing i know there were some people who were a little upset about this like
oh we're not going to see crosby in it i'm like buddy if you haven't seen crosby in it already
uh there's fucking 20 years of tape on that um i like this because people forget what happened
in 24 specifically with kucherov where he just didn't give a shit and like these young guys
under 25 they're not just competing for a million dollars which is a lot of money
they're also competing for sponsorship dollars you can if you play this right become a star
there you're selling you're selling yourself yourself but the league is selling the game
and they're selling personalities in the game and i like that shift i think this is actually a really
good thing and to be honest with you i don't blame the guys who are over 25 for not giving a shit
about the skills competition anymore i don't i don't blame them at all they're probably like
fuck it like i've done this how many times did sydney crosby need to do fast to skate or hardish
i don't you know i get it you know if you're watching it uh objectively you're like we
fastest skater is fun if you're watching kale mccarr take turns you're just like don't fall
don't fall don't fall don't yeah and then he did yeah yeah right i think it was wasn't it
someone like ate shit a few years ago it was bad um if the young guys want to compete and make a
name for themselves go for it i i don't make some money man one of my favorite things about the all
star game growing up that they got rid of and i know this is probably a big undertaking and a
bigger one than the nhl is willing to do the young stars game was awesome it was cool i love the young
stars game ilia kovalchuk was in it i've told the story before ilia kovalchuk was in it and it was
supposed to be his thing and there was this funny skating other russian like i i didn't even i was
like kovalchuk's not even the best russian on the ice who is this guy it was pavel datsuk
it was awesome i remember watching the thing um i would love it if uh if they brought that back
i assume they want to cut costs and don't want to be flying in all these young guys but this
is a great alternative it's something at least we were wondering what they were going to do
now do i think this three-on-three tournament's going to suck i think it i think it will be fun
i think the level of play will be hilarious um i do hope that the players do try i do want that
me too i want them to try i want them to care two million dollars should be enough to care
you know is that now here's the question is that two million dollars split amongst the whole team
because if it is yeah yes it's like 100 grand yeah or 200 grand how many guys on the team
uh it's 11 so be 100 and wouldn't it be less it'd be it'd be less than 100 be like 90 grand
i feel like that's what it's 90 grand still great i think that's what it's been for a few years now
but some of these guys make 90 grand or more a month um so like i don't know i feel like that
the million dollar prize for the rookie or the younger guys i'm like that's cool
two million dollars for the the exhibition of the best players on earth we really do talk
out of both sides of our mouths when it comes to nhl players they're gonna sign here because
of the tax rate and also ninety thousand dollars take this pittance and well i mean i just think
if you want to get a light of fire under their ass if you're fighting for half a million that's
a different thing right just have a frank conversation with kucherov and be like do you
want to go jesse what do you think about this uh this setup it'll be okay
it won't be four nations obviously you're gonna lack the drama three on three is exciting because
three on three but it's not five on five it's not true hockey i think we'll all enjoy it and
i we always forget that the all-star game isn't about the people at home it's about the city
yeah and going to the all-star game and the fans that are there and that's why they put on the
games it's it's you go and it's a fan fest for a weekend you enjoy the festivities you get to see
all of your favorite players in one place at once and that's what it is it's just a showcase of nhl
talent i think um new york's gonna enjoy it yeah well and like think of how many islanders could
potentially be involved in that under 25 competition i mean matthew schaefer is the
headliner right kashon acheson could be in it if he's in the league uh callum ritchie could
potentially be in it oh who's the don't they have a kid named ecklund um who could be in it
celebrini celebrini bedard no he was going through island well i was going through island
but but no you're right like celebrini bedard like those are massive massive big names who
should probably also be on their country teams too uh that too yeah slivkovsky that's an
interesting one like sorokin's gonna start for team red or whatever team blue whatever they
they make up the colors for the three on three competition it'll be fun yeah like they'll i think
they'll have a fun time on the island and that's what the all-star game is about yeah figuring out
who's on the rest of the world team is going to be fascinating because i'm like okay dry sidle
pasternak and russia like yeah like think of who could be on that team they're almost all russian
uh mo cider yeah yeah what do you mean yeah yeah better be oh i'm agreeing with you okay i'm
agreeing with you it's not a long list i just added one yeah okay cider dry saddle pasta yeah
what is the minimum number what's the maximum number of russians no minimum minimum like
kucherov you would think is it's got to be more than half the team i has to be you could have
exclusively russian goalies if you want it i think they will how could you not they're the russian
goalies right now are amazing shisterkin sorokin uh vasilevsky uh uh askarov could have a great
year you don't know in san jose what they're gonna look like like this is yeah i mean the
whole team could be russia maybe with a couple of like czechs and slovaks thrown in there like i
just a couple passionate two people i don't know maybe nature's nature's got to probably be in
there 100 point guy we're working on it we're working on it in real time i'm just saying that
could be a bit of a pickle um when we come to that time of year um now the nhl did talk about
bruce cassidy and the vegas golden knights gary betman said this when you sign and insist upon
a long-term contract there are certain under league policies uh consequences of that uh once
you're fired this is what uh cassidy said the other day once you're fired your contract's
basically terminated but one thing that people don't realize is you do have non-competes so he's
like i can't resign today and work for someone else tomorrow now the nhl has spoken with all
parties on the matter and bill daly says uh cassidy knows what our position is on the subject
and he might not be happy about it but he was accepting of it and we'll see where we go from
here there are contracts that exist in the league that would not allow for this to happen his was
not one of them so it sounds like a contingent of him signing this deal was vegas getting that
non-compete and you can write into your deal from what i understand that if i get fired you have to
grant permission for me to go and i don't think he got that and um you know once the cup's been
awarded vegas has the the right to change their mind uh and i think they probably do but uh no no
Bruce Cassidy is going to coach in the NHL next season
yeah he is where
well Toronto Edmonton
and and and
LA all want to talk to him
and that's why I don't think Toronto even makes a head
coaching decision until Cassidy
is available you'd be why would Vegas prevent
him from going to Toronto that
I don't know there's no reason there's no reason
but Edmonton and LA
I'm not surprised because they're
divisional rivals I'm not surprised I
do think he is
yeah yeah so it's it's a fascinating thing it bothers me it strikes me that the nhl is leaning
on vegas pretty hard on this as much as they're saying listen contractually they're right that's
what a lawyer would say yeah and they are they don't want teams acting like this no they don't
want this to be a thing it bothers me the lack of critical thinking that's gone into this um like
Again, yesterday when I was chirping, like, with the avalanche thing.
Did you notice that Vegas is still in the playoffs?
And it's not just Vegas fans, and it's not just Kelly McCrimmon,
but the, and I've said this for a few years now,
it bothers me when a GM or a coach or a player says something
and people go, that's that.
Truth.
kelly mccrimmon said it's the playoffs it no no no no no because people are saying well it's the
playoffs so we haven't granted permission and also why would we grant permission no no no no no no
pick one which one is it he's saying well we're still in the playoffs and that's nonsense
hey uh this guy who is not a factor for your organization anymore because you fired him
can we talk to him yep thanks hang up the phone yeah he's got time to go on tsn he doesn't have
time to just be like yep what is kelly mccrimmon doing all day during the playoffs working the
phone well they all say gms always say once the trade deadline's over there's not much you can do
yeah no it's it's they all say that they literally say that a lie that a liar who lies lied to you
and you just took it hook line and sinker i have some pride that's ridiculous yeah the pride i
think for them is winning the cup yeah and and i i don't know for this hey winning equals right
for this uh that's that's how uh children think i think i think i think for this this is gonna
you know bruce will will coach in the league next year but what's probably going to happen is that
that pick that they were fine will be downgraded to a third that's uh that's what i think but those
two things are completely believable and believe me you're absolutely right jesse believe me that's
is going to happen not a leak i don't think so i mean that's what i think is going to happen
uh now there were some rumors yesterday about a succession plan uh but gary obviously uh he said
any major organization it's incumbent upon the ceo blah blah i'm 74 i acknowledge i can't do this
forever blah blah blah here's the thing gary's only 74 and uh how old's jim rutherford how old's
lou lamorello like i think we're stuck with this guy for at least another 10 years but um you know
he got to have his little zinger in there where he said,
reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated.
I told you revenue is on the rise.
And the NHL lastly does not anticipate changing its new decentralized draft
concept unless team executives push for the original format.
Now I thought that the decentralized format was going to mean that we got
less bullshit on the stage,
but then we did our draft stream last year and we got more bullshit on the
stage.
That was insane.
i still think the commissioner should make the picks i still think it's cool that the players
walk up on stage i also don't understand other than the owners being cheap and that's the reason
this happened why they all can't be there they can be there they're just cheap and that's so
to me decentralization meant better broadcast i was dead wrong because i was told one thing and
another thing happened what the fans want is the player walks up and speaks to a screen like the
power rangers talking to zordon oh yeah excited to play for our team what was that nonsense
that was funny whatever we sent a guy to disney world like oh fucking cares man like good for
beckett seneca but what do we we don't care that was crazy i forgot about that it's like oh we're
gonna check in with becca at disney world he left the arena and went to disney world or disneyland
i think it's disneyland yeah yeah disneyland mid draft yeah and like it's like pick 20
it's still there's like another hour and a half to go and none of his family are there too
it's just him like yeah you know what i need to go to disneyland by myself that was at 18 anyway
So obviously there's people that want this to come back
because a lot of business was done at the draft too.
Yeah.
But the problem is the executives work at the behest of their owners
and their owners are cheap.
Shall we revisit the best moment from last year's draft
on the Steve Dangle Podcast NHL Draft live stream?
Easy.
He'd be in Japan.
Yeah, 100%.
It's crazy.
He'd go on a ferry.
Yeah.
Montreal.
We got some people from the Czech
Lick me sack
He got it
He got fooled
He got fooled
Deez nuts in Adam's mouth
Idiot
I've been up here for three hours
Lick me sack
I will never
Adam got lick me sack
What a loser
Loser
You know what
You know what's great
Is going up to the cottage
the next uh my my wife's families have to have two cottages next to each other
and all of them were just playing that clip oh yeah i'd be like taking the kids out for lunch
balls in your mouth like
by the way watch our draft stream that's gonna be great three hours and 15 minutes into the stream
we were at pick 19 yeah i think that was first round that was roughly yeah didn't it go did it
go five hours we went just four hours and 53 minutes on the video wow this year i think we
have to commit to five i extended the seven yeah we got to get to the five hopefully the nhl doesn't
allow us to get to five hours because they're done in like three jesse my sweet summer child
i have terrible news yeah five hours uh-huh uh-huh like that is so ridiculous it's insane
who's up on a friday night watching five hours of one round of a draft us besides the hardest
of hardcore hockey people and the families of these children yeah people are like hey lord of
the rings extended cuts a little long i'm like our stream brother i feel like our numbers were
pretty well and i think they were everyone in the world watching all of the draft was in our chat
because i refuse to believe there's that many people there's no one else outside of that like
after like okay the leafs are picking first our leaf fans gonna be like no no no i want to see
who gets picked 18 no click tv's done yeah like i'm i'm out yeah like come on i don't care i want
to do five was last year the second straight year no trades in the first round as well yeah there
was there a trade was there a trade because remember i remember there was no trade in the
24 draft for sure there's nothing honestly lick lick me if you're asking me to remember all 32
fucking picks and maybe there was a bullshit trade that dubas traded a second round down
or something like that we have a trade to announce no i think there was i think there were trades
okay um but they were all trades that like frank soravalli had broken beforehand and they were just
holding them back it's like there there has been a trade and we're like is it the trade that they
announced three hours ago okay all right i will say i obviously don't like gary batman but there
is one thing he does that's absolutely electric when the home the the draft host city makes a
trade we have a trade to announce i think you'll want to hear this and everyone goes wow like they
just everyone shut the fuck up and you want burgundy's on and you never do want to hear it
but because you've already read it oh sometimes it's it's name one i there is one and i can't
for five dollars name a woman queen elizabeth
there is one that i can't remember what it was yeah oh um didn't the
i love this didn't the cory schneider was it cory schneider steve cory schneider for
bull horvat trade wasn't that in new jersey that was in new jersey and that was the 10th
overall pick electric shut up and that was 2014 i think that's a freddie goche draft
incredibly recent no that was the kneelander draft coach it was the year before oh okay sorry
shove it up your nose um all right a couple other things around the draft combine is happening right
now and a couple of people are going to dinner they're going on little datesies uh so the sharks
are taking carson carrolls to dinner we know that iver stenberg will eat with the canucks
uh so that's interesting and a lot of other dinner dates are planned and this is nice is it
interesting uh yeah well i think it's like well carson carroll's name was not really up there for
a long time so the fact that the sharks with a second overall pick are taking him all the way
to dinsky when they could just have a nice coffee uh i think it's interesting i've been to one draft
combine ever and it's it's interesting man oh i've heard they're great great for i mean people
watching like everyone's just roaming around um i was young when i went i was 20 or 21 and i'm
walking which century was this and uh oh boy it's quite a while ago 2010 yeah it's a while ago um
But I'm walking there with my one button up shirt that I had looking roughly draft age.
And a bunch of guys with like books and pens ran up to me.
And the closer they got to me, the more they slowed down.
And they went, who are you?
And I'm like, I'm Steve.
I work for Leafs TV.
They thought it was a player.
Oh, okay.
All right.
But you know how Brian Burke and other GMs have told stories where they try to rattle a player?
I saw a player who was so profoundly rattled.
me and monica platek who at the time was monica with a k we were um just interviewing everyone
there at the combine and we had ryan spooner and he comes in and was so pissed oh yeah because i
think if i'm not mistaken he had just gotten out of a uh a meeting with i think it was the islanders
and whatever it was like they were just messing with him and he was red hot pissed i don't think
he passed the test i it's like the the uh the friggin um the terry story where he talks about
um interviewing with uh mike milbury you ever heard that one it was on chiclets no no no i'm
doing a terrible job of this anyway draft combine is is good for nerds um and no apparently there's
a lot of like gms talk here too and there's a lot of like some trades are created at or start at the
draft combine so i think it's terry ryan there's lots of guys named terry two and five canadians

mentioning manny malhotra uh officially became the head coach of the vancouver canucks to very
little fanfare because it was basically announced four months ago uh it's a three-year contract as
uh ryan johnson also had a three-year contract ryan johnson being extremely open with the media
in vancouver and i really respect this said he had a very open conversation with elias petterson
and i want to ask canucks fans this because he said uh ryan johnson says according to satir shah
that uh he's very comfortable with pd being himself went on to say he's not asking elias
to be something that he's not at his core um which i think jim rutherford and and and company were
um when are they just gonna move on
there's no way like one of the things that bothers me about nhl teams is we all know when it's over
we all know when it's over and it rarely ever is over and then comes back like fans that are
really dialed fucking no and i'm not a fan of the vancouver canucks i don't hate the vancouver
Canucks at all I love Canucks fans they're lots of fun but I don't like watch every game obviously
and I know it's over it's rare a player gets it back like I'm trying to think I want to say like
Dustin Brown yeah with the Kings like it looked like he was done done and then he became an
but he didn't ever hate it in LA he loved it and he also never made 11.6 million dollars he did
make a lot though for he made a lot but like not super i'm not saying his career is over i'm saying
it's over with the canucks and pedersen right why are we and the only thing that comes to mind is
by sewering pedersen the way that the previous administration did they kind of tanked his trade
value yes let me say this what team has been rumored to be on and on so you have pedersen
who makes 11.6 used to score 100 points now he gets like 60 who's the one team that's interested
in him well we heard carolina do not even think of picking up that phone all right have you lost
your mind you are selling low on someone who you once thought was your future and the one team
that's interested is carolina don't answer the phone have are you nuts do you take the a off
his shoulder and just let him be guy again do whatever you need to do but trade him to carolina
you've bumped your head and lost your mind and i don't mean like strip him of his aid
teach him a lesson i just mean like hey maybe that's just maybe take the pressure off yeah i
mean pedersen to me doesn't scream hurricane a team with a bunch of hard-working players he
seems like the complete opposite of that yeah so in his tenure last couple years in vancouver
i think there's somebody out there who will take them for a reduced rate you know if they're
willing to just save salary on that or can they send bad money the other way totally or yeah if
there's another contract too and you're just swapping problems but i think like he's got to
be positive about this situation in public ryan johnson does because you're looking to move the
guy right you can't you can't say negative stuff about peterson if you want to get something back
for him if you know what market could this is dumb but you know what could make sense couldn't
like a nashville make sense with chris mcfarland new set of eyes in there why in o'reilly quiet
media market no no no nothing like that maybe some pics or something i don't know you're just
taking the 11 million off their books he's got some good wingers to pass to yeah there's a team
that's desperate for centers so right how desperate i don't know i yeah is there confidence
amongst either of you that he can get
back to close to what
he was? He scored 102 points. Jesse,
he has to want it. If he can get back
to 80, I think they're all right.
Do you think he does that?
He's 20 points
off. He could do it.
He can do 80. Do you think he does?
I think
he's capable of it.
That still doesn't answer your question.
Sometimes you work
at a place where you just know
these guys can't get the best out of me anymore and i can't get the best out of working here
because i don't like it here um or you're in a relationship and you're both good people
but for whatever reason you don't bring out the best in each other i think that's what's
happening here and let's just that's why i'm saying like can we just end this i know i'm
sick of talking about it i know they have locker room problems but like they also nuked it well
they created them yeah but no no but like what i'm saying is jt miller is not there
quinn hughes is not there rick talkett is not there patrick olivine is not there jim rutherford
is not there if you want to go to like a veteran player like connor garland's not there like
why trade him you essentially have you've traded everybody that was supposedly a problem
you've traded elias petterson to a team that resembles
not a iota of the team from two years ago yeah he's will smith and the fresh prince looking around
the empty house yes like where are all the problems that were in my my locker room yes
and like i know ultimately you're still in vancouver and it's the crest and the expectations
and everything but like how how many people did you not get along with like they traded traded or
let go of every one of significance that there's no more it's a different president it's a different
gm it's a different head coach it's a different assistant coach because the last head coach was
the assistant coach uh it's a different captain and jt miller's not there surely like this is the
new team yeah there are no excuses for this player like i'm not willing to give petterson any rope
here to be like okay what are we doing here to get you back here like no this is on you entirely
Yep. This is, I think this is one of those rare cases where, you know, people like gave us shit for, gave media in Toronto shit for how we talked about Mitch Marner, right? I think the media in Vancouver are right. I don't think he works hard. I don't think he showed up to camp in shape. And there are just too many stories and everybody is saying it at a certain point.
This is why when Jesse asked the question, can he get back to 100 points?
Can he get back to 80?
He has to want that.
And you know who's telegraphing that the most?
The Sedins.
Every time they get asked about it, they're like.
The only thing the Sedins are not saying is we're not a fan.
Murder to Pedersen scores.
And the Vegas Golden Knights are back-to-back Stanley Cup champions.
Steve, I hate it.
A couple of things, too.
We got to talk about Zach Berwinski, Norris Trophy winner.
Let me revisit this conversation.
it does leafs trade first overall pick for norris trophy winner zach berwinski and the 14th overall
pick do you do it has this changed your mind at all because i know some people were apoplectic
that i would even ask the question i just want to say i greatly appreciate the instagram comments
that said the leafs hang up the phone you dumbass followed by the blue jackets hang up the phone you
dumbass that's how you know it's a good trade yeah that's how you know you're in the right
ballpark both sides hated it yeah i feel like there's something they were close um i still
think they're gonna get mckenna uh john carlson wants to come back to the east coast despite what
anaheim gave up to get him uh they do have a lot of defensemen there that can can fill that void
but he was great for them uh apparently a uh there's a chance he ends up with the flyers
so can you imagine john carlson playing in washington three times next year i think that'll
be interesting in washington boom boom i hope they do yeah the guy who didn't want to get traded
boom they ran him out of town that's fascinating interesting one and i think he makes a ton of
sense for them him and drysdale back there that's it he could do worse than that yeah i think it's
he's be a good quarter quarterback of the power play like this is a guy that supplanted lacombe
he was the top power play guy uh for for the ducks so i think that's interesting you better
be you paid a first for him you did um uh patrick lining admitted in in the it was interesting that
montreal let him speak at the post uh at the locker clean out um uh patrick lining was not
injured but pierre lebrun said there was an incentive for line to stay on the ir
uh as he will now be able to sign a bonus laden contract as a ufa with a much lower base salary
which will make him more appealing to teams so patrick lining if i don't know what they
specifically are but if you can sign 28 29 year old patrick linea and his base salary is a million
but it could say maybe go up to five if he scores 40 goals and plays 60 games
i think a lot of teams would take that chance he was a rare example of a player who made a lot of
money and seemed to hate that he did yeah you know what i mean yeah um i could see him having a
resurgence because the last times i saw him play useless you can't so the thing with lining for me
is he'll never play defense so you need a battle for a puck or battle for a puck so you need a
team that needs a power play specialist a team like carolina might make a ton of sense in this
just in the sense that their team defense is so good you just roll patrick lining out there in
the fourth line and put them on the power play listen there's probably not room in the playoffs
for a player like that but the regular season is long and that's something i have to say every year
82 games is so many games and it's going to 84 um there's definitely use for a player like that
yeah you're not playing him in the final four but i think he can still give you at least 20 goals
i think he can too and seven assists yeah like his shot is a touch of death everything else about his
game is completely staggeringly shocking it's bad it's really really bad and there's another guy who
i think if he wanted it could return to it he was great in winnipeg he was if he wanted it
if he was and i don't know i don't know what it is obviously there's some there is some history
some some things there obviously mental health things but you know sometimes you fall out of
love with the sport too maybe there's that maybe there's maybe there's it's it's tough being on
the road like this is not a life for everybody and this guy's got phenomenal talent and that's
why i say if he wants it he can still seize it this is it's kind of a a darker thing it's not
just the nhl it's across pro sports not everyone in the nhl loves hockey andre agassi didn't like
tennis yeah it's just true and i think we forget that sometimes yeah and that doesn't mean that
he can't listen if if patrick line it comes in and is a useful piece in a middle six role
he's gonna make 10 million dollars the next year like if he can be let's say patrick line a 25
goals and 20 assists and uh scores and and elevate your power play a couple of percentage points
maybe not 10 million but the way the cap's going that's the going rate for 30 goal score goals are
expensive and that's what he does and so when i say that i mean it in a positive way it's there
for him he can do it now i think the best place for him because he loved montreal apparently he
said you know what are you gonna they said what are you gonna miss about montreal and he said
everything yeah um montreal's a great place to live i think a market where it's a little quieter
probably makes a ton of sense i think it's a leaf do you actually think he's a leaf yeah why not
i think it's a good opportunity to go get some cheap goal scoring if i do it nuts if for a purely
bonus heavy deal it's only upside he's not wrong jesse blake cooking with i would go get line it
was scoring winger like what are the least missing and i can't wait for line it could be coached by
patrick i was just gonna say or pete labia let's shoulder shoulder pads which are always way too
high um oh my god yeah patrick wa charged with double homicide that's kneel and or line a are
you kidding me i never i didn't even have to say nylander and you know i meant adam's right that
maybe he doesn't want to stomach the market but he could also be just a low-key guy like the way
nylander handles toronto is the perfect fit for it where he just doesn't care about the media
but if he doesn't want to then there's nothing there but if i'm chica and there's an opportunity
to get him i would do it leaves pr for as many as many criticisms that we have they are pretty good
at protecting guys they're very good that's why we're critical of them um yeah i mean jesse's not
wrong like you need a you need a top six middle six option even if you get McKenna it'll help on
the power play too remember the not this past season but the season before where he actually
played for Montreal like half the season or whatever where it was a billion goal every night
we'd be like oh he's scoring the power play again there's another power play goal from line a you
put up like 20 goals and 50 something games like I could see him being effective on a power play
for the Leafs. You know who's a good team with a power
play that stings?
Carolina. That's why
I brought them up. There's something too, yeah.
That's why I brought them up. Did you bring them up? I did.
I said Carolina. Why not Carolina?
The
other thing that is a couple
of things just worth mentioning before we sort of wrap
the show. I did
say Bednar is going to remain as the coach there. I
think I'm pretty sure I said that, but I want to say it again in case
I didn't. Dallas Stars
have new arena plans
Now, this is not going to be Arizona.
And I know you hate this kinds of conversation,
but mostly it was Arizona because they were full of it.
But according to the PR statement put out by the Dallas Stars,
Dallas Stars announced a letter of intent
for a proposed Plano Arena and Entertainment District.
They sent a non-binding letter of intent
for a potential new arena in Plano
as a part of the proposed sports and entertainment district
at the shops at Willow Bend,
which just sounds so-do-so-pa.
It's located in the west of Dallas,
and I've never been to Dallas,
so I don't know the area very well,
but it's going to be sports, entertainment, retail,
public gathering spaces,
all the things that all these new arenas do,
and I think really the Detroit Red Wings
with Little Caesars really sort of,
they were the ones in the NHL, at least,
that really brought that into the fore.
The Leafs should have done that
and had the opportunity to do that and said, no, let's do condos instead. But the owner and
chairman and governor, Tom Gagliardi, said, we eagerly await the vote by Plano City Council,
and we look forward to continuing the conversation. This project would be a once-in-a-lifetime
franchise opportunity. And obviously, the mayor, John Munns of Plano, said this would be great for
them as well. So it seems like something that could very easily happen. And unlike with Arizona,
where they never had anything ever.
I never want to hear Tempe City Council again in my life.
What I am excited about here is they could do this
and they could do this quickly, right?
Because it's already going in, you know,
or LaBreton Flats.
Well, that's a great idea.
Is it LaBreton Flats
or is it the friends we made along the way?
Still not there.
Yeah, whereas this is already happening
and Dallas is, the Stars are just like,
well, we could help too.
I think a lot of Dallas Stars fans
are sad and upset about this news
because the new proposal is 27 ish kilometers away from where the american airlines arena is
right now so that's not close no it's not you're you're moving this team from a pretty central
from what i understand location in downtown dallas to a suburb and somewhere else north of where the
arena is right now if you're moving 27 kilometers like because we're local we'll know your scotia
bank arena that's a different area of toronto that's not the same you're changing that for all
the people who are used to going games in one location and this all is coming about because
the dallas stars and the dallas mavericks seemingly hate each other um they've been in
court battles against each other over where they're currently playing at the american airlines arena
the mavericks went as far as to sue the stars in court for preventing upgrades that they felt were
necessary to the arena and they've wanted their own arena for so long and like a basketball
only facility because they felt that having the stars as a co-tenant there was preventing them
from having a really good arena so they've actually proposed um i think it was this week or last week
um to they're going to move as well the the mavericks are to another location that's um i
think that was probably i think they read 11 miles whatever that is in kilometers away from
where they currently are so you're taking these two teams from where the community knows they are
and they're moving because they all fought over this arena and this doesn't seem like to me a
whole like a happy case for the fans there in texas that's too bad isn't there also some sort
of controversy with the stars where they like own all the arenas yeah they do they own all the ice
and they charge through the nose extortionary prizes yeah yeah uh that was a big usa today
expose last year um and the uh the judge had ruled in favor of the mavericks in that lawsuit two
weeks ago and the the mavericks got control of the arena and the stars are appealing it so the
judge felt that there was something there is there a less likable organization uh than the mavericks
currently like with their ownership yes um because i feel like now now those the they wanted to move
the mavericks out of dallas right the whole reason that that family bought it off mark cuban was
they wanted to move it to vegas um and then they traded their star player and like their fans are
they love the mavericks idea but what the mavericks have become a kind of villain right and they are
apparently selling them again so i don't know maybe this all kind of wraps up too it just i
don't know much again i don't know much about the layout of dallas but if the mavs are already
leaving why not just stay i'm sure can i can i tell you something i'm very sure of the answer
money yeah so in some way i think it's a shame that these markets i think across pro sports and
especially now in texas are moving away from these downtown cores because i feel like the the ease of
access to an arena and a downtown core makes the most sense to me that's how i've grown up always
with scotia bank arena right in the heart of downtown next to a train hub where everybody
can get to it it's like the one easy place to get to in toronto yeah it's the easiest thing in the
world getting there you're literally you end up underneath the arena when you take the train there
you know you're right there and across america it seems like everybody wants to get out to the
suburbs and build their giant arenas there with giant parking lots instead of making it just a
simple thing in the middle of downtown that you get to uh through transit and like the cowboys
stadium is out in arlington it's not even dallas yeah didn't didn't the braves do that too the
atlanta braves they were right downtown and they built their fancy new thing where the blue jays
are playing this week and they lost yesterday uh it's fucking jace uh they they lost there in the
suburbs of atlanta because they took that team away from downtown i believe the numbers have
come back that it hasn't worked it hasn't worked that moving it to these suburbs uh create this
new economy for these suburb cities and i feel like the we should move away from that as a sports
hole and stick these arenas downtown where they should be i agree with you and here's dallas
fucking doing it again yeah well yeah i mean it's it's all it's it's a cultural thing too like there
is a weirdly a very big backlash against trains uh and i don't understand that but it's like so
much about these american arenas is the massive parking lots that surround them yeah they're just
deserts they're in the middle of nowhere and parking lots yeah now i get tailgating i get
tailgating i get that sure i get it but i i don't get the listen i grew up loving having a model
railroad so i am always partial to trains um and and i just don't get the i don't get that but
you know whatever teach the road it's not my city right so anyway you're right plano county
place i'd never heard of until now i have heard of it and i don't know if it's plano or plano
i hope it's not plano that's all i was wondering that doesn't sound very interesting
uh last thing before we go apparently it's not been announced yet but dregs put it out that uh
jonathan tase is looking at retiring oh wow um great career amazing that he worked his way back
let's just be honest it's probably the right call yep nice story impressive that he came back
and like was an nhl player like not to well he put as in he put on a jersey no and the money
the jets paid him they paid him too much eye watering he was eye watering he was uh should
have been a low cost depth player and he's like no i'm coming home and i'm taking every dollar
i would yes i agree but i would argue that contract prevented them from being able to
pivot at all when things went south last year they put a lot on tase their fault yes not his
oh yeah no three years away from the game you're gonna be our second line center what yeah steve
went down to list his uh accomplishments from this season and he started with was an nhl player
it's like me going steve dangle two eyes ears legs guy
uh and the last thing the very very last thing is espn australia has agreed to put one game a week
of the aihl that's the australian hockey league australian international hockey league where
former nhl players have played remember we talked about i thought it was australian ice hockey oh
yeah whatever um whatever the hell it is uh they uh i'm kidding they they are playing remember was
it was it uh who played who was a leaf that played there and just oh david booth david booth just
racking shop yeah so they're gonna air at least one game a week of the aihl in espn australia
and i think that's a step forward for the ice where are they airing and in australia they don't
None of the AIHL games.
This isn't on ESPN 1.
No.
They can watch AIHL on ESPN, Foxtel Go, Fetch TV, KO Sports, and Disney Plus.
Jesse.
Oh, okay.
Come on.
We cut away from Broncos Patriots to bring you the Melbourne Mustangs.
I just think it's nice.
This is on the Ocho.
Yeah, this is on the Ocho for sure.
You got to start at the Ocho and move your way up.
Exactly, yeah.
right and and and i don't even know like the british hockey league uh i don't know if they're
on tv yet i have no idea right like this this is good we want the international game to grow
that's all i'm saying so good for them i think the i should reach out to them we should run some
aihl games the aihl legitimately are some sort of fans of us because they follow all of us on
twitter um you should follow them back i will uh there you go there maybe maybe they're listening
right now and they can hear our
congratulations yeah Sasky Stewart once
told us that their original trophy is at
the bottom of Sydney Harbor that's right
celebrated a little too they said they went a little
Aussie with their celebration and lost the trophy
I love that okay
we'll leave it there and
we will see you on
Friday oh my god
it's already gonna be Friday Steve stream
