This is Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction.
Want to bet?
It's back, Andy.
Woo!
S-D-P-P.
The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
Hey, Steve, you ready to talk about last night's game in depth for a third time?
Yep.
Because you didn't do it during the game, and you didn't do it directly after.
Now you've got to do it now.
Ha ha.
Woo!
Now, I don't know if you all could have told by my performance in the third period,
but those are easily the worst kinds of games to do.
Easily.
Easily.
I liked your performance in the third period.
I disagree with you on this point.
Well, I would, first of all, thank you for finally consuming my content.
That means a lot to me.
Well, you know what?
Listen, billionaires got to make time for you sometime.
It's been a couple of years, but I did it.
That's fair.
you know couldn't make time for ice surfing but at least you got it i appreciate that um it's a
shame they can't cancel dice i know it's such a bummer yeah it was a good idea it shouldn't have
been on twitter it should have been on youtube there you go um the oh my god so even when the
leafs are down three nothing yeah i can talk about it and have feelings about it and communicate with
the audience about it because things are happening as it's happening the end of the second period
things are happening the whole third period was just a slow awful death and every whistle
was a punishment for some sort of sin that i'm not aware of from god that third period was a
punishment from god it was horrible man well i i gotta say uh what's funny the the thing about
when the leafs lose like like they did last night and we'll do the full breakdown is it's
uh not only do you get the chiding on twitter and oh you guys are clowns and 1967 and all that stuff
you got to remember that like it especially in the playoff steve is doing it during the game
and then he has to break it down two more times afterwards and if you do like a radio hit or if
you like then you got to do it again oh everyone wants to call friggin slap happy mcsad
every april yeah every freaking april now one minute ago new name slap happy mcsad
one every uh sorry one minute ago sdpn's chris johnston that sounds good to say still
um he tweeted that matthew nize is in a regular sweater at leafs practice pretty good sign he'll
draw in a game too i think he would have been if bunting got suspended or not and he's getting
suspended oh for sure and we're three today and we will get to that so here's what i'm going to
request because we're going to go through last night's game we're also going to go through all
the other games as well but the games that happened you know uh two nights ago are they're
they're going into game two this this uh tonight so we're gonna we're gonna skim those but i want
to get your thoughts on each of those series as well right now it's about to say how rude of us
jesse congratulations yeah congratulations jesse jesse blake everybody uh my favorite team my
favorite team won last night i should i should have wore my devil's jersey um fake fan so yeah
I start losing.
All of a sudden, Adam's off the bandwagon.
You were there for the 13 straight wins.
What happened?
You lose game one.
All of a sudden, you're off.
Well, they lost to the Leafs in game 14, so I had to be a Leaf fan.
Yeah, I'm a bandwagon jumper.
Yeah, you hopped off.
No, I...
Skidded your knee on the pavement, hopping off the bandwagon out in the wild, huh?
No.
That's dangerous.
You shouldn't hop off the bandwagon.
Yeah.
You shouldn't, but...
Sometimes you got to.
You lose game one to the Rangers.
So here's how we're going to do this.
Here's how I'm going to structure this show.
And we're going to have to do this at least for the next few episodes while the Leafs are still in the playoffs.
So, at least for the next week, we're going to be doing it this way.
I want to talk about the game.
I don't want to hit on the ramifications for the rest of the series right now.
It's exhausting.
Once we get to the end of the recap of the game, then maybe we could chat about that a little bit.
got to remember seven game series seven game series guys seven game series so hey man you
could lose 15 to nothing in the first game you could at least may as well have last night you
could still win in five right so this is why i don't want to talk about the ramifications of
the series and i'm setting that precedent now because when i'm looking at the discourse this
morning on twitter and i'm looking at a lot of people are like the reffing and the this and how
can they expect and this has been seven years and blah blah let's move all of that aside talk about
the game can we talk can we talk about you reading twitter for a little bit yeah because i've i've
almost hopped off entirely of reading twitter based on just how it's gone lately and elon
fucking up the whole platform and i just want to move away from it yeah but you came in here
a little hot and heavy because least fans are i don't know what they're what they're doing to get
you so riled up there's such a variety well what name the subject i think i think i think the thing
that bothers me the most is that there are people out there who will tell you that last night's loss
wasn't bad and it was a bad loss and i think as a fan you're well within your rights to be upset
about that now does that mean that i'm f the team i'm burning my jersey they're gonna lose again
they have no heart no but i i do there is a uh a and i i almost respect it where there's there's
this group of people that are like no matter what it was not the leaf's fault man i and it and and
so this is where that's a loyal person yeah i love that kind of loyalty but as a fan i'm still
and and then but here's where they lose me is they lose me when they say i feel this way so
you must also otherwise you're stupid yeah that's where you lose me you can be you're the bad guy
for not feeling how they feel right and i and i don't i i frankly do feel like last night's loss
was bad for a variety of reasons and i think people are i think most of the leafs nation
arrived at the same conclusion for some of them though for the wrong reasons right right and i
don't and i don't mean to say that all of it was in the toronto maple leafs control but if we're
going to get into the game right now let's start at the beginning sure so what do we do when you've
got a top six like the toronto maple leafs do you got bunting you got matthews you got marner you
got yarn croak you got tavaris i don't know yarn croak wasn't on the uh second line no he was on
the second he sure wasn't it was o'reilly tavaris kneelander yeah yeah on the second line that was
uh i'm fairly certain most of the leafs top six had not touched the ice before the first goal
Well, O'Reilly wasn't on the ice for the start.
Sorry, O'Reilly was on the ice for the start,
but I don't believe the Leafs' second line was.
Dude.
So here's the problem I have.
You don't...
I like Sheldon Keefe.
He's got an undeniable record with the Toronto Maple Leafs,
but that first 90 seconds was planets and suns
and galaxies and asteroids floating around his head.
What kind of galaxy brain bullshit was that, Sheldon?
You start with what essentially is a third line against-
What the fuck was your fourth line out there in the first two minutes?
And then within 30 seconds, they do a change.
The fourth line's out there.
Puck goes off.
Zach Astin reaches his skates.
And Corey Perry, who was booed in the opener, scores the first goal of the series.
And so it's like this is literally letting the bullies win.
Yeah.
When Corey Perry's in the building, bring cash.
you have bring cash he's stealing your lunch money and you deserve to have your lunch money stolen i
want you to understand that this is steve dangle's fault though the way that sheldon started that you
know this is your fault you know why this is your fault why is this your fault because it wasn't
adam it wasn't fucking overtime yeah it doesn't matter it's still your fault because i said david
camp should start overtime yes it's your least we're one and six in overtime yeah and he scored
and he scored on it like like the chances of david camp scoring in overtime but you know what that
did it reinforced a bad habit it reinforced a bad habit which is don't start the best
fucking players this team has had in 106 years it's so wild that they're one of the best face
off teams in the league but one guy has to take all of them yeah like i don't think it's funny
i and like matthews is a positive in the in the dot tavaris is a positive in the dot yep matthews
tavaris why o'reilly why does it have to be o'reilly and not because ryan o'reilly's not good
but so then and then and then and this is the crazy part for me you okay you start with the
third line i can get down with that but your immediate immediate go-to after that is well
let's put out zach aston recent company like and get fucking fed right now they they were more
confident in their bottom six going into this then and we all were honestly because they played
really well and i understand that however and i'm going i'm getting to it sure you michael jordan
is not coming off the bench okay fucking uh uh max for stopping's not gonna let the third driver
take the first few laps i you don't when you have serena williams isn't coming off the bench and
this is where and i partially blame other sports where it doesn't well it doesn't apply but yeah
but you know what i'm saying right yes if you and i blame i do blame the leaf stars for this a little
bit if i'm austin matthews and i see that i am not starting that game i'm fucking pissed about it
and true and you have to watch other sports to see this and it's only since i've broadened my
horizons where i see in every other sport you see the big stars fucking down their coach's neck
about how come i'm not on this big play how come i didn't get the ball here how come i'm not here
how come i'm not wide receiver screaming at the quarterback why are you not passing to me
here when it matters it's like it's it's like having tom brady and not starting him
why is it tom brady in his prime not not recent tom brady why is it that that the leafs players
and and i think it's a hockey thing they just don't say anything about it you need if i if i'm
they don't say anything about anything if i'm austin matthews and i'm not starting that game
I'm like, motherfucker, put me out there against Stamkos right now.
That, um, I want to go head-to-head against the best.
I'm so focused on the third period, I'm trying to hold it in.
So we're doing the first.
I brought up the shift chart just to dump on what you're calling a third line.
Because it was John Tavares, William Nylander, and Ryan O'Reilly.
And then immediately fourth line.
They started the game, which is not your third line at all.
That line doesn't work.
The line doesn't work.
We've all discovered that, but it's a little question mark to call them a third line.
They're probably your second line.
Give them a little credit.
Okay, they're your second line.
All right, and so they start the game, which is unforgivable
because Austin Matthews should be starting the game.
Then the puck goes into the defensive zone, and he's trying to line match with Tampa.
So Austin Matthews, Mitch Marner, and Michael Bunting,
they get out there for half a second.
They get out there for those 10 seconds, and then they're replaced by Camp,
camp so they did take a shift but it was 10 seconds so that's where i got the third line
thing yes so that's where i got that's where you go second so it's even worse jesse what do you
mean you shorten the shift of the second line then you go third line for 10 seconds and then
you put out the fourth no no no no so it went tavarez neilander o'reilly okay then matthews
marner bunting for 10 seconds for i i don't know how much the game clock was but at the beginning
They were out there
And then when the play went into the
I think it was a defensive zone draw
Keefe switched them out because
The goal happened 70 fucking seconds in
Yeah Cooper sent out
Which was the line he was trying to line
He sent out the Maroon
Belmar Perry line
Against the fourth line
So then Keefe was like I don't want Matthews, Marner and Bunting
Out there against them
Why?
Why not?
Skate them into the ground
Why?
So Tampa had three line changes in that instance, too.
Point, Kucherov, Stamkos were out there for a couple seconds versus the Matthews-Marner-Bunting line.
Keefe pulls them after the stoppage, and he line matches.
He goes camp for East Lafferty, and then Cooper goes maroon, Belmar, Perry, and then that's when the goal happens there.
Do you know what kind of psychological fucking warfare it is to have to wait a year to go through this every single year?
So after he does that, he goes through the three lines and he tries to line match and it doesn't really work.
He realizes, he says, I made an oopsie.
He goes to Matthews, Marner, Bunting for a significant amount of time here.
And for the last time.
Oh, I can actually, I can tell you how much time it was.
It was 11 seconds.
Jesus, why?
The Austin Matthews, Marner, Bunting shift was 11 seconds there.
So you give, okay.
So my point still stands.
You've given the lion's share of the time in the first 90 seconds to the fourth line.
Because you're trying to line match the other team.
By the way, you have last change, Sheldon.
They line match you.
Yeah, so that was his strategy with line matching, right?
That is outrageous.
He went to the comp, comp, Austin Reese, Lafferty line.
Berkshire put it a great way.
They came in like a puppy with their belly up.
100%.
So here's the other thing.
And here's the other thing.
The Hall Giordano thing.
i mean i've seen enough of that already that was and and i'm gonna call out my favorite defenseman
on the toronto maple east mark giordano the first two goals they were on the ice and he's looking
at the goalie both times baby shit on the sorelli goal baby shit never thought i'd say that about
that player never thought you're allowed to have a bad game but it's like everybody had a bad game
all the game was too fast and overwhelming for him same with the baby shit same with the guy
who's been the best defenseman on the team tj brody he got he got weirdly beaten a couple spots
in front of the net oh yeah yeah the brain point where brain point he was like following brain
point to the front of that because brain point read the game quicker exactly that's exactly what
happened can you everybody it seemed like who was playing defense at least last night couldn't think
quick enough so so jesse i got a question for you yeah can you look at that shift chart yeah
and can you tell me what the defensive shifts were in the first 90 seconds because i swear
Gio and Hall started, they were taken off the ice,
and then immediately put back on where then they allowed the goal.
Yeah, that's exactly what happened.
Are you fucking joking?
Hall and Gio started the game with O'Reilly, Nylander, Tavares.
Then McCabe, Brody came out with the Matthews line.
Gio and Hall were out there for 23 seconds.
And then McCabe and Brody came out for 20 seconds.
And then Gio and Hall came back out with the comp, Austin Reese, Lafferty line.
are you doing and then the goal happened what are you doing that's to me we can we can we can
criticize this team we can criticize this team this is the first time where i watched sheldon
keith coach and thought he's rattled he's absolutely bruce cassidy he's rattled bruce
cassidy outcoaching well he outcoached uh babcock too oh wait a sec no sorry it's bad i'm screwing
it up yeah because keith got hired in 2019 that's right and it was after the boston drama
babcock yeah yeah absolutely sheldon keith was of of the entire organization last night
the most unprepared the most important part of a game is the start and there were people like
leaning on me a little bit on twitter like like adam like what do you mean it's the first 90
seconds like you know that's you're talking in cliches here somebody said it and i understood
what they were saying a lot of cliches consistently but for years and years and years and years but i
get it we're not making it about that we're talking about the game but what i want to say
is that uh if you read any book and in fact there was a book that elliot friedman when he was on
the show recommended we read and it was about a an nfl coach and it escapes me right now but i read
the damn book because it because it's one of kyle dubas's favorite books yes i do remember him as a
football coach it's an incredible book totally recommend it i'll google it in a second the point
of the book though is they talk about how to start a football game right and your best plans
are you know the best plan here sorry i'll predict what you're gonna say you completely um just let
the road team dictate everything that was not in the book no no it might have been maybe they sent
out a new copy of it with you know some additional but i thought they taught that at coach school
they didn't they didn't just completely fucking let them do everything and i want to say that
john cooper absolutely son you sheldon keith every everybody that doubts sheldon keith currently
has all the ammo that they need right yep they have all the ammo that they need he was of all
the toronto maple leafs last night the most unprepared yep he was completely lost in those
first 90 seconds jesse read you the shift chart there's no excuse guys there's no excuse and i
like Sheldon Keefe. His record is like the best
record in Leafs history. It's crazy.
It's gaslighting. It's gaslighting through
statistics. How the fuck
is he that
prolific in the
regular season and absolutely
futile immediately
as the playoffs start?
Well, and this is where
how, so here's my
question becomes then, and this is
one for the end of, if your coach
is that rattled clearly through their actions,
how do you expect the players not
to be. And this is where I think the players know these guys are really, really smart when it comes
to hockey. They'll forget more about hockey than any of us will ever know. Do you think the players
don't know? Do you think Matthews and Marner sitting on the bench for the first 90 seconds
of that game didn't know? And I was watching the shift chart on NHL.com or the ice time,
the time on ice thing, NHL.com while I was streaming your game on Sportsnet. And you could
tell that keith was trying to make up for it so at about i don't know 12 minutes in matthews and
marner at are at three minutes played or something like that versus everybody else which is maximum
two and a half so they're getting their ice time but the first part of the game is where you
establish dominance that is where you decide here's how the first 10 minutes of this game go
absolutely said john cooper and i i so i don't want to i don't want to belabor the point but
that is completely unacceptable and Dubas puts eight he's got a blind spot for Keefe good or bad
and if you're if you believe it's bad because I believe Keefe's got the stuff to be a great coach
but he has to win he's only good he's only good so far and don't do not show me his regular season
stats I know and also they don't matter right they don't so like yeah they don't matter how
you feel today do you feel how the last several months will absolutely not matter in your life
at all if they fuck this up again jesse can you bring up the picture i just sent you on text
message sure i can it's uh it went viral last night i think it was bar down that tweeted it
this is he just had just for laughs up on his screen followed by leaves highlights a little
on the nose well just for laughs gags uh yeah it goes into your take that off the screen let me put
up the twitter pic all right awesome um so just for laughs always goes into the hockey night in
canada games when they're on cbc it's a little ridiculous that they don't it's not even the good
just for laughs it's just for laughs gags yeah here this is the photo so this is the photo this
is this is after the first period rasmus sandin alex nylander and hey by the way you know who
that guy that bald guy is that's michael that's fucking michael nylander that's his dad also an
nhl player nobody everybody was like oh it's alex nylander and i'm like that's freaking michael
Nylander. You just blah blah. He's the biggest
star. Michael Nylander is the
biggest star of those three and nobody recognizes him?
In NHL play. I feel like I recognize
the guy in the middle too.
I don't know who he is. Trying to figure out who that is.
Like look at the
look at the shock.
Shout out that
Sugo hat. I assume that's for the
great Italian place. I think so. On Bloor Street.
I hope so. Now
the Leafs were booed off the
ice at the end of the first period.
I believe it was
I believe it was a bad period
if you get booed off the ice at home
in your first playoff game.
Do you think that things went well?
Yeah, I...
Someone said to me,
like, why are you booing them off the ice?
How does this help them?
And...
Oh, my God.
That's not the fan's job.
Oh, my God.
And I mean, I mean, lightning...
It's 3-0.
I mean, lightning in three.
if that's the if that's the mantra lightning in three lightning in two lightning won the series
last night if that's your mantra how can we go to the game and help them right like listen i get
being a fan and i get that certain fan bases can help their team uh achieve more and you know uh
but no no one's intimidated by this building well you know who's most intimidated by that building
the Leafs. The Lightning aren't
fucking scared of Scotiabank Arena.
So in the first period,
Jake McCabe takes a penalty for
high-sticking? Yeah, that
was unfortunate. TJ Brody
takes a holding penalty, and it's the TJ
Brody one that's the killer. I'm thinking, like, if they
could just get out of this period 2-0, like,
if it's 2-0, they could score a goal,
snap back. I actually had a
tweet written. Get to the... Hey,
they got to the... I actually pre-wrote it.
Like, 90 seconds on it. I'm like,
if they can... Now that
They've gotten to the intermission 2-0.
They score a quick goal in the second period, and they'll be fine.
Is it bad when you put your opponent in a full Nelson
and then act confused why it was called?
Well, and that was –
And T.J. Brody has been spectacular this year.
And this is where –
Oh, for fuck's sake.
I know you don't.
But the theme of the game is so interesting
because everybody who was good for the Leafs this year,
from coaching on down, was not good.
I thought Marner had a decent game.
Yeah, I thought the top line was good
until dude who shouldn't
have been there
in the first place
got fucking suspended.
We'll get to that.
But no,
I thought Matthews and Marner
actually had a great game.
I am with you
and I'm not trying
to take away from that.
How do you lose 7-3
when those two play great?
Guys,
I wasn't gonna,
guys,
I'm being facetious, okay?
You guys know,
I'm not gonna be like,
well, but these guys
all had a good game
and these guys did,
like, I know.
But you know what I'm saying.
Everything else,
the entire supporting cast
went down, right?
Right?
Fair?
The bottom six was,
it just felt special.
and then when I looked at it on paper I'm like you took away everything that made it cool so
tell me about the bottom six thing you took away everything that made it seem formidable
uh you know I've been pretty outspoken about not loving the type of player Alex Kerfoot is
but all of a sudden you give Kerfoot to O'Reilly and put Achari on the wing that's a formidable
third line you have an elite center there an elite defensive center two-way center you have
Achari who can bang and crash in goals, hit the fuck out of people. You have Kerfoot who can win
puck battles, can set up plays. That's a great third line. All of a sudden, Kerfoot, Achari,
Yarn Croak. It's not the same. It's not the same at all. O'Reilly with Tavares and Nylander is
fun on paper it's super fun and it'll bang in some goals against the buffalo sabers in a game in
march it's not the sort of uh line that you bust out against the tampa bay lightning it doesn't
work so let me i don't like o'reilly and nylander together i don't think their games complement each
other so let me give you the um let me give you the leaf lines of practice as of 10 minutes ago
on that line yeah here's the leaf lines of practice potentially for next game okay i'm ready
Yarncroke, Matthews, Marner.
Thank God.
Kerfoot.
Fuck!
Tavares, Nylander.
Nyes, O'Reilly, Achari.
That's interesting.
Aston, Reese, Camp, Lafferty.
So they're preparing to play without Bunting.
Bunting and Simmons are the extras.
Oh, wow.
They know he's going to get suspended.
I'm trying to figure out how I feel about that because...
Let it sink in.
We'll get to the second period here.
I like that third line.
Fuck my life with that second line.
um so the Leafs are down it was Kerfoot Tavares Nylander that's correct
you know when something doesn't work for three years straight you have to go back to it
so Leafs were booted off the ice at the first period as I told you they let a goal in with
about 51 seconds to go early in the second you see Victor Hedman go to the tunnel right and
and if you're a Leafs fan you're like listen I don't want him to be hurt but this is an
opportunity the leafs have to take advantage of wounded animal ryan o'reilly scores on the power
play william neilander scores on the power play jesse you were at maple leaf square i was how was
that when those goals went in unreal unreal when when willie scored that was like that was the
biggest pop of the night obviously but there was actual hey we're gonna do this like they are we
aren't gonna completely shit the bed the leafs are coming back that was awesome you watched the
stream uh-huh did i not lose my actual mind yeah you did what was the chat like it was crazy chat
it was crazy we were going yeah believe it or not i want them to win right now no you want the
montreal canadians to win everything yeah yeah you're a big canadians guy now that luke shen
such a much better mood before this show started the luke shen penalty the luke shen penalty before
that was now why was it abysmal because luke shen did cross check i was at ross colton uh um
yes i think it was ross colt but ross colt ross boston fucked me ross boston yeah ross colton
fell off of his skates like he'd never skated before it was a dive bunting it's quite for he
got it 10 times out of nine if that if that's him but he got it percent but that's the thing
tampa works the refs they're good at it yeah i'm not convinced there's a huge difference between
those two players other than one of them is way smarter um so then ross colton gets a slashing
call on who who did ross colton slash trying to remember that's right i don't either i actually
don't know it's not me it's not him sorry i thought it was somebody else no i thought it
was somebody else my bad my bad uh ross colton slashing i forget uh there was a i got i got
mixed up there but the point i'm trying to make here is the leafs uh after the william
Nylander goal can't even go two minutes without Braden Point making it 4-2 and that's where you
go oh shit that's not great and then it was there they're in it they're in it there's still gonna
be a battle they're still you're not just gonna go three and three right so I I was sad when that
goal went in but I'm like they can still do it but that goal goes in because what uh TJ Brody was a
step late well they were on the fucking penalty kill that's what and that's what I want to talk
about so this is where Jake McCabe uh lays out Yasmont uh Mikey Yasmont yeah lays him the fuck
out and there are people that he's gonna get fined or anything I don't I think it was so I looked at
it this morning and listen if you're a lightning fan I get why you'd be pissed about that uh that
penalty or sorry about that hit and it and his head does snap back but I'm looking at where he's
at he's right over the puck with his head down and i don't know if jake mccabe's both feet are
planted knees are bent i don't know how he gets any lower in in order to throw the hit it's real
close to a bad hit um you know like alan walsh whoops alan walsh has talked thank you at length
of uh eliminating all head hits right and that i think is going to be terribly difficult to
enforce well because then you just go into the room like you'd be skating head first into
everything oh you touched my head penalty well that's the thing like i don't know if it's baseball
where guys can lean into balls to get hit to get a base like i i think uh you know you're not gonna
want to get hit in the head it'll ruin your fucking career right this isn't a welt on your
arm that'll be gone in a couple days the the slashing call on on shen on on against colton
it seemed like sorry the cross check yeah that was really just to kind of uh tap in the back
Where were those calls in the Montreal series?
Hold on, no.
I want to make sure we're staying on the McCabe stuff, too.
Yeah, it seemed like that was the make-up call from the refs, you know?
It seemed like they thought in the moment they should have made the call on McCabe,
and they didn't, so he goes and they make those calls.
So that's such a good point because they do fucking crazy mental math
that you can figure out if you take the time to do it.
so okay we shouldn't have called that penalty on luke shen so okay that's plus one that we
shouldn't have done and then there's the jake mccabe hit and we should probably call that
but okay so we're gonna make that zero now now we're even and then nick paul chases jake mccabe
up the ice and he's slashing him and he's following him and he's not even participating
in the play and he's not an eligible player to be interacted with frankly but that's okay we're
going to ignore that because even though we're even now uh that we should have called that and
we're just what the fuck that's what in that moment that's what it felt like because it the
the leafs had scored like it was the willie willie come back it's three two yeah and in that moment
it all the momentum was sucked as sucked from the arena and sucked from the team when those two calls
were made that just looked like hey we're gonna make up for jake mccabe hitting a guy really hard
I it sucked I I try to separate the Luke Shen thing from the camp slash on Perry which is what
happened and we haven't talked about I didn't notice until this morning and Tic Tac Tomar
pointed it out it's it's beyond parody it's so so deeply fucking funny camp slashes Perry
gets called Achari takes the puck Perry does the exact same fucking thing yeah exact same
fucking and he does slash him oh yeah it's the it's the it's almost frame for frame the exact
thing you could argue perry got into achari's hands more than camp the other thing is does
that slash happen if mccabe isn't being run after by the tampa player and taken out of the play no
because he's going to be in position so camp isn't going to be out of position
in order to do the slash and the ref is it doesn't mean or not there are literally in clean or not
they they didn't call it so clean leafs power play don't touch the fucking guy you want you
want big hits to stay in the game if the ref doesn't call it and someone's fucking following
them up and down the ice interacting with them slashing them touching them call the penalty
because if you look at the at the uh the footage from that he slashes him way harder than david
camp ever did nah it's crazy so that that except for when you don't matter you can't show this but
But like, watch this.
This was the slash here.
That wasn't called.
Like, that was the same slash.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
That's the same thing.
It's because it affected possession.
Look at how Lin Pachari goes.
Like, he thinks he's about to get a call here.
Oh, my fucking God.
He gets him right in the hands.
So, this is the whole thing.
Is that, like, that kind of officiating.
That's garbage.
Changes the whole match.
so let's have the west macaulay conversation now you want to do it before getting to bunting okay
i'm gonna bring up the scouting the ref i think i think it's important to say that
the officiating isn't the reason that the leafs lost i agree you're you were down three nothing
you allowed seven goals you can't blame officiate your coach wasn't ready there were some blatant
officiating areas that that sucked the life out of the game for the leafs but that's not the entire
reason you lost when you when you allowed seven goals just sent you a graphic just by the way
so from scouting the refs yeah did a great job this morning so yeah there was a stat going around
that the Leafs are eight sorry oh and eight in Wes McCauley games since 2016-17 in the playoffs
in the playoffs the Leafs were 5-0-1 in the regular season which is fucked yeah fucked
that's insane now because we know what all the games are and Jesse just pulled it up on the
screen i went through and looked at what the penalties were um and like i wanted to see if
i could find a big discrepancy and like because last night was worse than the stats actually
imply because the leafs got two power plays in the third yeah when the game was already four
goals off yeah it was and the power plays were eight two going into the third in tampa's favor
right eight two eight four at the end of it but now the leafs the leafs but is it because the
The Leafs committed more infractions.
The Leafs absolutely deserve this.
So here's what people are not going to like.
Except for probably a couple.
Here's what people are not going to like
with the Wes McCauley conversation.
There is not that I could find,
and I wish I thought of this idea last night or this morning.
I thought of it in the car on the way here.
There wasn't much time to prep.
But I did have enough time to go through each box score
where Wes McCauley did these games.
So to list them, Game 5 against Washington 2017, Game 7 against Boston 2018, Game 4 and Game 7 against Boston 2019, Game 3 and Game 5 against Columbus.
Game 5 was the decider, remember that, in 2020.
Game 7, Tampa last year, the most infamous one, and then last night, which should be the new most infamous one.
Last night was an outlier as being lopsided.
the rest of them are all within one penalty of each other in terms of
fairness,
except for yet last year when,
if you take away Mark Giordano's delay of game penalty,
which is a flip the puck,
which is you take the decision out of the ref's hands.
Yeah.
The Leafs had a three,
one advantage in game seven.
You'd kill for that opportunity and game seven,
2019 against boston there were two penalties both of them went against boston one was a bench minor
now boston got away with fucking murder in that game so yeah but at the end of the day it's not
like he's giving you could argue he's giving the opponent an advantage by not calling things and
maybe that's what happened in 2019 but generally speaking that's not really the case that i'm
seeing by the numbers yeah when the the calls are even on both sides that means the ref's not
calling the game he's just calling it so that the penalties are even on both sides yeah yeah
that's not a west mccauley problem no it's an nhl problem national hockey league exactly this isn't
a case of a referee taking it on either team this is the case of the referee doing what he thinks
his job is which is hey what he's told his job at the end of the game they've got to be even in
penalties else it's not correct so yeah it seems like there's no bias towards i also want to
acknowledge this and this has been making its its way the there is a connection between west macaulay
his brother-in-law david frost and sheldon keefe's abuser is david frost and sheldon keefe
went on record the the court documents are sealed uh now there are a lot of people this morning
making the connection that west macaulay uh is clearly biased in david frost's direction uh i i
think that there's more to this story and i would say and i would say this because we don't even
fully know the story steve simmons wrote a book on it you might want to check that out we talked
about this before the show i do not feel confident enough to to 100 say yeah this is what's going on
yeah he's defending and there's a lot of conclusions being drawn from stories that
aren't fully out there family members don't have to like each other right i just want to throw that
out there. Now, the other thing I want to say is if I am the NHL, in order to remove any sniff of
this, Wes McCauley should still not be reffing any Toronto Maple Leafs game. Whatever the relationship
between Wes and Sheldon, if there is one, if there isn't one, if they love each other, if they hate
each other, because of that connection, there should be no reasonable reason that Wes McCauley
should ever do a Toronto Maple Leafs game
or any team that Sheldon Keefe coaches.
There should be no reason.
You can't, especially in the playoffs.
It doesn't matter whether they love each other
or hate each other or went to court or didn't.
There is bias, potential bias there.
Take it out.
Just, you have a bazillion reps.
You have a bazillion reps.
I mean, what we also don't know is
if they've ever spoken about this with the league,
hashed it out, had some sort of discussion.
Are you comfortable with this?
Are you comfortable with this?
Keefe was fined $25,000 earlier this year for yelling at Wes McCollum but I think Adam is more
speaking towards the optics of the situation in in where they're not in like a normal job circle
where it's like hey they're they're working here no this is a competitive sport where there's if
there's biases it's supposed to be fair you know we're supposed to be on the playing field where
it's fair on both sides and if there's a perceived hey this could be tilted this way or that way
then why not just get rid of it so that people don't have this conversation it's a very
uncomfortable uh scenario which i'm not sure i'd be comfortable with as the opposing coach
either um like i've heard things where i you know there's the obvious optics of this could be a
negative thing for sheldon keith i've heard this relationship could actually be potentially
something that favors him because of factors that are not necessarily common knowledge so why not
just eliminate it yeah and this is why we haven't gone into the story in depth like when when we
have talked about more serious topics on the show like i wanted to make sure like i studied
uh certain topics harder than i studied for any university exam um because you can't fuck it up
right so the optics are terrible i understand that and i feel like there is enough
i was gonna say i feel like there's enough fan concern that it needs to be addressed in some way
but these are also the private lives of these people and i don't know if we deserve anything
the league is here's all we know Wes McCauley keeps getting Leafs games which means the league
is comfortable with it we know Kyle Dubas has had conversations with the league about officiating
uh is he comfortable with it is he adequately comfortable with it like is he a little bit of
column a a little bit of column b there's enough nuance here that you know he was the game seven
official it was a storyline for months and months and months and then almost as if to parody
themselves they give them game one they give them back-to-back playoff games so obviously the league
is comfortable with this relationship well what else am i supposed to conclude i think you're
right i think you're right and and and i think a lot what a lot of people probably assume is that
the league just doesn't care and i would i would be right there with them i don't think the leaf
the league cares i don't have the foggiest yeah so uh chris chelios uh after the second
intermission on espn said and i quote you ready absolutely terrible officiating worst in a while
mark messier was saying the same and then mark messier said i won't hold this cookie above my
head because i hate steve yeah yeah get it right mark messier two guys who won cups never played
for the leafs i don't even think they're from ontario i don't know where chris tell us is from
oh he's american i'm an idiot um you know there's so there's no bias there you're not watching some
local broadcast and um it's it's funny like just as a little aside i've seen a lot of people
heaping praise on joe bowen and jim ralph and wanting to get uh them back on tv and i'm not
saying i'm against that i've met both guys i like both of their work i just i the rare occasions
where i have to listen to a game in the car um i i don't think the leafs have ever committed an
infraction in jim ralph's mind ever never not once you know what it would be nice to have a
local broadcast crew who are a little homerish every freaking leafs game is a national game and
they're like like canadian broadcasters especially are just falling over themselves dying dying to
not seem biased towards toronto oh my god you know what i love about the states is they don't
fucking care national broadcasters like oh is new york team playing ah we're just going to talk
about new york we don't give a shit about anybody else and i i think there's a balance there but i
would like leaf fans to have some support from their announced crew once in a while wouldn't
that be nice they're not the leafs announced crew in that game that's what i'm saying it's a
national it's a national game with fucking tampa you're not wrong bro why do you think i watch your
stream because i fucking it's good because they're like wow i just i just can't tell you how great
tampa is we need to be balanced towards tampa stop stop i'm sick of this shit and i know it's
uncomfortable markham waxers fans watch well that's fair that's true i just i i get sick of
it because like i like people in edmonton don't understand they have like gene prince of bay and
mark specter and all those guys and in vancouver they just you know john garrett just retired
uh fabulous career 20 years they have their own broadcast crew we don't have one they have their
own broadcast crew because they have to so do the leafs yeah but not come play yeah i know it just
drives me bananas it's banana sandwich well i can't hear the broadcast when i'm doing my stream
I know, but you do a great job.
You do a great job, and so do they.
It's just like I would like some bias, please.
Gordon Miller and Mike Jay do a great job.
They do.
They do.
They do, and that's because that's a regional broadcast, right?
I guess that's why.
So the goal in the second period, was it actually in?
I don't know how you conclusively say it's in.
Now, it didn't seem in,
and then Sheldon Keefe challenged for goaltender interference,
which I'm not totally sure why he had to.
you well because you can't so it was a huge risk but also if the goal comes back you're down four
two uh if it doesn't you're down five two and also and also you go down five on three
and one of those penalties is a major so he essentially bets the game on that challenge
i don't know if that was advisable i think he was rolling the dice like look we're kind of
fucked anyway thanks mike um i gotta take this risk and i gotta say i thought he would have got
one of them i don't know how you conclusively 1000 say that puck is in but but the call in
the ice was goal so they had so rarely they had to conclusively say that it didn't go in all right
right did they did we not get all of the angles on the broadcast that's what i assume happened
is that on the broadcast they didn't show us all of the angles that we could have seen the puck
crossing the line so what i think it was the the net cam shows white surrounding the puck which is
usually the kiss of death but it seems obvious enough that some of that white is snow yeah so we
We don't know if every molecule of that puck crossed the line, which is what needs to happen.
99.9% of the puck can be in.
If there's 0.00001%, it's not a goal.
And I thought we also didn't get enough angles of Perry hitting Samsonov's, like, pad into the net.
Like, I don't remember seeing, like, 10 replays of that or anything.
I thought it would have come back.
yeah i thought like at least because everybody's shoving at the puck and that's where his skate was
and the pad was and you can't do that to force the puck into the net move samsonov causing the puck
to go in question mark which is the definition of goal interference you can't shove his pad to
shove it into the net i thought it would have come back i assume that we didn't get any good
angles during that broadcast and that they thought on the initial puck going against the post into
the net uh decision that that was on the initial shot and the forcing of the pad into the net had
no effect on the puck moving to more towards into the net but i'm just assuming that's what happened
because i haven't seen the replays are you are you ready for the worst annual question
does it come back in the regular season what does that goal is that goaltender interference
in the regular season and they've deemed it well it's the playoffs and we want a tougher standard
i don't know or i suppose a more lax standard so the the one in in boston was funny when who
hit the who hit the puck out of alex lion's glove i mean jesus
yeah that was so boston yeah i was like we're literally just gonna take the puck
out of the goaltender's glove and put it into the back of the net and maybe nobody will notice
Yo, the Bruins own the Panthers soul after game one.
Fuck, I felt bad for the Panthers.
We're getting to that.
We're getting to that.
I don't think that's something we need to talk about.
We don't need to talk about it right now.
Don't even need to make reference to it.
No, I don't think we need to talk about it at all.
I think it was they beat their ass.
There you go.
So, Bunting, after making Cernak take a penalty, takes a cheap headshot.
There's no other way to describe it.
Now, it kills any momentum that the team has.
And, of course, he's like immediately kicked out of the game.
And here's the thing.
when he did do it like he's he's he's clearly high it's clearly a headshot sir next clearly
injured afterwards protesting in the box protesting in the box protesting in the box
come on screaming as he as he's uh escorted off the ice he hasn't learned a fucking thing
here's what he spent millions of dollars last night here's what keith had to say about this
and then we'll get into it uh he said in terms of the call i don't have any thought i don't have a
lot of thoughts on that because he can't say anything but bunce to me is trying to win a
line to set himself up
to win a race for the puck
it got away on him the guy
wasn't expecting it I'm sure Bunce was expecting
a battle in that situation and he didn't get one
he hit him in the fucking
head
he hit
him in the fucking head you saw my live reaction
I knew right away
it's an illegal check to the head
what the fuck are you
doing why does this
to the allegedly softest team
in every playoffs how do they
always lose a guy i think there's 10 suspensions in the last six or seven years and the leafs have
had three of them four four of them oh yeah four of them because of clifford cadre cadre clifford
bunting 18 19 22 23 23 and by the way player safety said last night he'll be having a hearing
today uh and people were like three o'clock yeah yeah so we'll find out later we haven't and i
I imagine the hearing will be, Mike, it's two games.
It's two games, for sure.
And he can shout fucking to the phone all he wants.
No, no, it's not two games.
You don't think it's two games?
No, I'd put money on that.
If I could Dave Bastille, you can bet that it's going to be less than two games.
Clifford got two games last year.
No, Clifford got one game.
He got the game misconduct and then a game.
Are you sure about that?
Yeah, isn't that...
I'm pretty sure that's how it went.
And we counted that as two games because he got the game.
Double check it.
Now, I think part of the reason Clifford got suspended is...
Oh, yeah, you're right.
It was one game.
I'm sorry.
I thought part of the reason Clifford got suspended
is even though it was early on in the game,
it didn't cost the Leafs because they killed it off.
They killed the whole thing.
This iced the game.
And if I'm the Leafs, my argument is,
look we lost game one because of it like have a little bit of mercy like we fucking
we we've been punished yeah at least in part because we lost an entire playoff game because
of that i think it's the same situation as clifford where he got the game misconduct
since the playoff so that counts as a half game which is and then we're gonna give you one game
we're gonna give you game two which will count as two games and then that's your two and a half
game suspension for but the league has been looking for this guy yeah you know what i mean
that's why i think it's two games i i really because there's no standard right we know that
i also that's why i think i'm like i'm like oh bunting they have an excuse to go and here's the
thing i want bunting to get two games because the refs are gonna say when he comes back okay he
served his time we'll we'll let it go they're fucking here's just let me finish my theory
can i finish my theory so my theory is the refs will be like okay we're gonna call him normal now
because he's he's he served his two games if he gets one game then the refs are gonna be like
this fucking guy got one game he's melting off again fucking send him to the box for nothing
that's what's gonna happen lost lost in what's he gonna get blah blah blah i'm so disappointed
yeah so i'm so fucking disappointed we talked about this the whole thing that we said last
week was put him on the third line because he can be less of a liability there he's a powerful
player scores goals gets in your face does all the things that you would want a leafs player to
do because they don't have enough guys that do that but if you put him up with matthews and
marner you know that cory perry and belmar and all those guys are going to get under his skin
they're going to piss him off and he's going to do something stupid and he drew the penalty on
cernak yeah he was having a great game so far like up until that point and he just genuinely
was having a great game up to that point and he was looking good he did exactly what we were
worried about which was um he took less than 40 minutes he crossed that line and it's a liability
and so if if cali aren't croaks on the ice with matthews and martyr that shift continues
yep i want to it's so strange like what he's thinking about in that moment because it seems
like such an unnecessary play so i don't know why i i the keith's explanation makes a little
sense like he was looking for the battle you know when you're going up against the guy it makes
And you're both trying to slow down,
but you're also trying to hit him into the boards
and you're trying to get the puck in the same play.
But Bunting just went for this super aggressive elbow to the head
or shoulder to the head, and it didn't, like, why?
Penalties aren't just there, or suspensions, I should say,
aren't just there to punish.
They're there to teach.
And, you know, it's not always about intent.
When guys intend to hurt someone,
that's when they really throw the book at them.
But I feel like guys are so rarely actually trying to do that.
A lot of it is situations where it's like bunting where he makes a split second calculation that's wrong.
But what the NHL is trying to do, and I can't fault them for this, is they're trying to prevent the wrong from happening next time.
Now, maybe that prevents him from getting into a battle for the puck and he loses a few more puck battles as a result.
And he, A, has to adapt his game.
And B, tough shit.
You can't be beaning guys in the head with your elbow.
There's no surprise.
There's zero surprise.
From the moment I saw the replay, I'm like, he's gone.
He's gone.
When I saw Cernak down on the ice after seeing it live, I was confused.
I was like, why is he there?
I thought Bunting might have clipped him or something, like a little hip check.
as soon as i saw the replay yeah you you were so the the more they showed the replay the worse it
got yes it was like the first time you're like what was the what was maple leaf square it was
oh my god it was silent at that point everyone knew it was devastating yeah it was like he's done
like um and the more they showed this so the first one you're like what the hell happened it was like
oh boo and then they show it again and then they show it again and it just gets more and more
silently like oh no he literally just hit him directly squarely in the face i there's nothing
to there's no nuance about it first replay i saw i grabbed my headphones threw them off and just
screamed mike oh you knew from the first one yeah right away i knew he was getting tossed so from
arun uh srinivasan um who was covering the leafs for yahoo last night and did a great job uh he
asked morgan riley after the game if there's been an overcorrection on officiating bunting and he
He gave what Arun thought was an interesting answer.
I want to read it to you.
He said, is he, again, I think he's just involved in more of those situations than most people,
whether he's taking penalties or whether he's drawing them, judging by the fact that he's
up there in that category.
He's in that scenario a lot more than other guys, which is part of who he is and part
of his game.
I don't think it's an overcorrection or not.
I just think that he's at the scene of the crime very often.
So therefore, whether he's guilty by association or whatever, he's involved a lot.
and that all could be true but the reality of the situation is he has become and i hate saying this
a liability i love michael bunting the player yep but that kind of stuff it's like i love
nazim khadri the player but when he took himself out of the series against the bruins
the punishments were unfair especially the second year when they just banned him from the whole
series unfair wrong stupid shouldn't have happened but he still deserved to be suspended
both times and three and colorado and colorado as well and i i can love this player and still say
i can't rely on you i dude i and and listen when he's when he wins the cup in a couple years and
says kiss my ass to all my doubters great i hope it's here by the way i love that cadre won the
cup but I I can't I have to confess I was a little bitter about Kadri doing the you can kiss my ass
thing because uh it's it's it's an it's forgetting all the history that led up to it what there's a
reason that people were like hey Nazem please stop getting suspended in the playoffs well like
okay if we're gonna make this into a court case next time he flies off the handle uh you're getting
30 games because not only have we dinged you increasingly with every playoff fuck up uh you
have no remorse yeah you have no remorse at all and i and i i love naz and i think he was great
and did the leafs get better when they traded him no they got worse and they've been they had
been struggling to find that third line center ever since um and look at how colorado's done
i mean they're not this they're a good team they're a great team they could win the cup again
but they're not the same as when he was playing with them.
He's a fantastic player.
Bunting is not Nazem Khadri,
but he's still very, very good
and is a UFA at the end of the year.
And this is the kind of shit teams look at.
Like look at the contract.
If you think that NHL GMs aren't watching right now
and getting ready to sign checks,
look at the contract Matt Boleski got
after one good playoff run.
One good playoff run.
Matt Boleski got a four or five year deal
from boston worth like five million bucks by year two he wasn't even in the lineup i guys michael
bunting is a great player but also at the same time michael bunting is a liability you cannot
trust this player on the top line in april may and hopefully june i'm i'm so upset that i was
exactly right yeah you don't want to be right about that i did i not call exactly what would
happen the lightning would methodically pick them apart because that that play didn't fall out of
the sky it from opening whistle and bunting was playing great when in puck battles in the corner
that first line amidst the shit pile was really good but after every whistle there's a little
something it's a little push a little smelly glove a little cross check just a little something
they're never going to call it a little something which by the way the leafs didn't participate in
not at all not one iota and bunting was losing his cool you could see him he's starting to talk
more the more it happens and then in the second period tampa harvested now i'm sure that's not
what they wanted to happen they didn't want chernak to get hit in the head i don't think
that's what bunting wanted to happen i don't think that's what bunting wanted to happen but sometimes
you know there are different kinds of nerves yeah um and the leafs were playing with nervous nerves
and he was playing with maybe some nervous nerves and angry nerves and he has it dialed too high
and i think this is a good transition to the third period the rest of the team
needs to find their fucking heartbeat so going into the third period and i'm going to hold you
there because i'm going to set you right back up penalties were eight two and fate in the favor of
the lightning what did you say on the stream what's going to happen in the third period it's
either going to be a or it's going to be b it's either going to be a four goal disney movie
comeback or at very least you're going to see some rough stuff some big hits some fights you might
even see a line brawl what happened last year so you'll have a lot of people say hey what's the
big deal tampa got their ass kicked in game one last year they ended up winning the series here's
the very key difference tampa got their ass kicked last year on the road and their response was near
the end of the game fuck shit up get into fights grab guys hit guys punch guys get into fights
smelly gloves smelly gloves everybody rough stuff you will you will win this game but you will not
no peace the leafs wouldn't even finish their checks it was pathetic pathetic you have a wounded
animal they're playing with 4d how do you not make the decision to go you know what we're down four
so i think what we're gonna do is we're gonna dump the puck in every fucking time and smash those
guys into the boards with legal perfectly legal hard-hitting checks i wanted luke shen to fight
somebody and i was i wanted anyone to do anything disappointed he didn't like this isn't a case of
um i i think people were calling for blood with matt dumba for his hit on joe pavelski this isn't
that this isn't that literally dump the puck into their corner and hit them legally there's only four
of them oh what and again that's and then John Tavares after the game uh will we go to learn
from this well okay you've got a PhD in learning from well so during the Amazon documentary they
talked about the Leafs coffee club and last night we learned it's decaf
are you fucking kidding finish your fucking hits put a chari out there with Matthews and
Aston Reese. I don't give a shit.
Dump the puck in
and hit them. You might even get a couple
goals out of it. Yeah, could make it interesting.
Could make it interesting. Soften
them up for game two. You also know
if the penalties are
8-2 in the other team's favor
as the Leafs and knowing how the NHL works
which they love to even up their calls.
Knowing how the NHL works, you know
you've got some calls coming in your favor. It's not going to
end 12-2. No. It's going to go in the
other direction. Exactly. Take advantage of that.
So it's like, it's literally, you're losing big.
So they're not going to call you.
And the penalty differential is enormous.
You can go out there and commit legal murder.
I never forgot this.
There was a Puck Talks event.
I can't remember where, but it was Elliot Friedman talking about a behind the scenes story
when Adam Oates was briefly a Sportsnet analyst.
And, you know, people, you know, can criticize his coaching career and how he's done or whatever.
Whatever.
He's an incredible player in NHL history.
and Elliot talked about how as an analyst Oates was excellent and there was a series between
the Rangers and the Penguins I think the Penguins had a 3-1 lead and even when they were up 3-1
Oates is like Rangers are going to win this series you watch wow and it was because of the way the
Rangers got the puck deep and battered and bruised the Penguins and there was an atrophy there was a
fatigue guys were sore the ice packs are a little bigger a little colder you got to wear them for a
little longer and they wore them down like waves against the shore what did the leafs do park the
fucking bus that more than going down three nothing more than an irresponsible check more
than taking a bunch of penalties more than any lineup decision or uh uh you know line change
anything like that more than anything that pathetic third period performance made me
so upset you you should the feeling after a game one loss the feeling after a playoff loss
should be a bloodlust for game two i cannot fucking wait to watch game two what did the
third period do other than set you up to expect more of the same so on the stream and jesse was
on his way home from maple leaf square at this point i believe right jess so you didn't catch
the third that the third period of steve's stream did you catch it uh no i watched it on tv watch
on tv yeah yeah because in between the second and third periods because i don't live too far
from maple leaf square i uh got out of the cold which you can't be blamed for
so yeah so what quick uber home what i thought was a fascinating question and i love the questions
that you're being fed on that on that uh on that thing um producer aj doing a great job
the the question that that really got me was steve is it time for a spezza speech
now when they're referencing a spezza speech what do they mean what are they referencing
I don't remember which playoff run it was.
Maybe it was...
Was it not the Amazon documentary one?
No, I think it was last year, actually.
Okay.
In game five, the Leafs were down to Tampa.
If I'm not mistaken, it's game five.
The Leafs are down to Tampa.
Spezza, who may or may not have even been playing,
and if he was, he was on the fourth line,
gives a rousing speech to the locker room.
And someone was saying,
where is that speech this year?
where indeed austin matthews mitch marner john tavaris who's the fucking captain morgan riley
margier dano could be this year's version of jason spezza anybody anybody anybody says anything
in that second intermission they at least finish their goddamn hits in the third period
I'd love to know what was said
So it was the game 5
Last year versus Tampa
There you go
This is an article from the score
Jason Spezza
Jason Spezza gave a moving speech
In the dressing room during his first intermission
To help fuel Toronto's comeback
According to his teammates he's a great player
He's been around and he knows what it takes
And when he speaks we listen
That's William Nylander post game
What message did Spezza deliver
just that it wasn't good enough and we have to start battling in this game that was the gist of
the message we got our legs going in the second um and they had a comeback down 2-0 so you know
i thought it was fascinating and i don't know what kind of speeches happened post-game or not
uh but you do think you hope that one of those guys you know after the the bunting major call
right in that second intermission stood up and said guys we got to do something and if they
didn't do it then hopefully after the game they said guys we got to do something bunting was
probably still taking off his shit yeah yeah he probably was now there's some quotes after the
game that i want i want i do want to talk about um and one specifically uh a couple that from
keith that i think are interesting uh mike stevens asked sheldon keith if nerves played a factor and
He said, I don't think nerves have anything to do with not defending our net.
The Leafs are atrocious in front of the net.
Terrible.
I think a big part of this game is we're forgetting how bad the first period was.
Yeah.
And that defined the first period.
Yeah, the net front presence.
There were some great stats that I think Jonas Eagle had in the athletic,
just about how much of a drop-off there was from the regular season,
how well they did that, to that game one, the first 10 minutes of the game.
I don't know what happened there with the defense, but they couldn't play it.
They looked nothing like the 2023 Leafs.
No, nothing like them.
And it's strange, and I think that we'll get to game two.
So I wouldn't say, but they can figure that stuff out.
Lots of problems last night.
Anthony Petrelli brought this up, and I think he's right.
He's like, I'm trying to reconcile this.
There's nothing to discuss when it comes to goaltending.
And here's what, when Sheldon Keefe was asked who the game two starter is,
whether Joseph Wall, who did draw in last night, is in consideration to start game two.
Sheldon Keefe said it is too early to know.
Now, I have to ask, maybe he's just, it's post-game, he's in a fog.
What a fucking disaster that game was.
And it's an isolated game, I get it.
It's a mess.
He didn't give the right answer at the right time, so what?
Why would he say that?
Sammy clearly should be the starter.
I think it's just a non-answer.
Okay, all right.
I mean, the first two goals is Sammy making a save.
And on the second goal, I believe he made two.
And the team can't clear it.
your goalie's gonna give a fucking rebounds man like it's gonna happen that this is it's i feel
like we've gone back in time because this was the leafs problem at the beginning of the season
is murray and sammy were making the first save and they couldn't do a thing about clearing it
then they figured it out and all of a sudden sammy has the number one inner slot save percentage in
the national hockey league that's crazy and the thing that was seemingly the leafs number one
strength evaporated that's a problem right in the first seven minutes um john cooper with maybe the
most john cooper quote of all time you guys ready i i i i think it's impossible to hate john cooper
with quotes like this yeah he said the least might win this series oh god i hate you they might
there's so much runway left on this but what i've learned over the years is i sure as hell wouldn't
bet against our guys and you know what what about that's untrue he just stated a fact nothing that's
why i hate him he's he's trolling he's trolling everyone but this one made me feel good okay and
i i then we can talk about the implications for the series but i i i like this and i like this
from a con smith trophy winner who in the least won the con smith trophy guys all right all right
he said i'm not worried like i said we got to adjust learn and get back at it and yes we did
take a full big chunk of this show and devote it to the circus that was this game the officiating
was bad the net front presence was bad uh bad penalty on uh that that bunting whatever but all
of those things can be turned around the great thing about this is that how does it get worse
and I know as a Leaf fan you're going well I can tell you the Leafs are good offensively
they are good in front of the net they do have good goaltending so if we're talking about
regressing to the mean I think that means regressing upwards does it not I don't know I
hope so I hope I feel a lot better I like I want that attitude to be the Leafs though it's one game
again you can lose like I said 15 nothing in the first game win the series in five
i would love to see o'reilly in a chair i mean we'll never ever get to see this this would never
see the light of day and we probably wouldn't hear about it but i would love to see o'reilly
stand up in that locker room with achari by his side and have them both punk that whole fucking
room scream at them call them a bunch of losers do do whatever you have to uh like hey like give
me a glen gary glen ross i'm from the saint louis blues and i'm on a mission of mercy
they need that they need that so desperately yep i now last night was inexcusable does this make
you feel better okay i don't in terms of ramifications visiting teams went six and
two to open the stanley cup playoffs this year this is from cj of sdpn with only boston and
carolina holding uh serve among the higher seats meaning uh they were the only ones that won
of the higher only home teams last night was a sweep of the road teams it was very impressive
like and i don't know if it's time to talk about moving forward but let's talk about moving forward
edmonton it's not time to panic vegas it's not time to panic new jersey it's not time to pay
new jersey maybe a little time to panic yeah it's a little bit toronto it's not really time to panic
like all of these teams are very good teams and it's game one the series isn't over you can you
You can win four straight in the series.
No, you can't overreact to game ones.
There's such an overcorrection in people citing that stat
because it ignores the fact that you're actually allowed to win game one.
And it's actually better and beneficial to win game one.
Tampa has a losing record in game ones over the last 16 series.
Don't give a fuck.
I don't care about Tampa.
That's their business.
So Colorado lost game one.
Yeah.
Drew was miserable
I was texting with him
Seattle's gonna win that series
I don't like losing
Edmonton lost their fan base was beside
Themself
The way they lost was pretty bad
All I'm saying is the series isn't over
Which is just the simplest way to look at it
It's not over
That's how we started the conversation
It's not over and that stat is a little ray of sunshine
But we just spent
How far into the show are we?
An hour and 12 minutes
We just spent an hour and 10 minutes talking about how fucking awful that game was.
So I am going to go with the evidence of my eyes and ears on this one.
Based on one game.
And you'll get more evidence when game two happens.
And we'll get a clearer picture of the series.
And hopefully it's different.
I mean, the Leafs killed Tampa game one.
Tampa beat them game two.
Leafs killed Boston game one in 2019.
Boston killed them in game two.
Let's go.
i think there's no reason uh there's no reason to despair but i do think there's a reason to be
upset you can be upset you can go fuck they really really didn't nothing went their way and they and
they didn't give it in the third period the way that you would want to but also go but it is one
game and we do have to look at this in a trending sort of thing not the crazy thing is you can do
both yeah you you could be upset and say there's no evidence here in game one that the leafs can
compete in a seven game series with any hockey team on planet earth and also say that hey they
could win four straight here and they could win this in five you gotta lose two games to win it
in six you gotta lose you gotta lose three to win it in seven you know you ever had someone
offering you solutions to a problem and you're like can't i just vent that's what it is i
understand that but they're stop offering solutions i just want to be mad don't yeah and that's okay
be mad vent vent and then go okay so we vent it now we vent it yeah but we understand in the
context of the series it's one of seven and i feel so much better the team you should be worried
about is the florida panthers yeah yeah well we'll get to that but hold on bastel bastel sent me the
dave bastel um from sports interaction sent me the odds for tomorrow's game okay okay so believe
they're not Toronto's
favorite to win.
As they should be.
Tell Dave from me.
Shut up.
Sportsinteraction.com
slash STPN
90 plus
please play responsibly.
Toronto is at a 1-6
on the money line.
Tampa
2.36.
On the puck line
Tampa is at a 1-5.
Toronto at a 2.6 out.
So this is what I'm saying.
Like
at least we're the better team
in the regular season.
I know the regular season
doesn't matter.
But it is the biggest
sample size we have they are a good team they just came out fucking nervous man and they never
shook it what i want in game two is a prepared coach starts with him make some confident decisions
i think he made them confidently he just they were the wrong ones no he was like he he was he
was scattered no i think shelby keith was a confident man like i think he thought he knew
wouldn't even do it switch it out uh matthew's a martyr and bunting no no i mean like i mean like
the start start of the game like i got it let's hold those guys let's hold the horses back let's
go slow at the beginning of the race because that's how you win you know it's going to be
agony for our timeline what when they start the matthew's line in game two and they get scored
oh well you know that'll be the that's just being a leafs fan it's tax season yeah and that's why

it's the company's thing it is sdpn.ca uh listen i made it it's okay you can say it you can find
all the like we actually have like the news and headlines and everything happening every single
day so if you missed any of the games you got that it's an evolution for us because now it's
not just us yelling it's it's people who actually report on things saying stuff about sports right
everyone yeah the best part of the website let's all be honest like all we're doing all this hoopla
of spn.ca there's a section on the site that's called uh justin's picks justin fisher who joined
us as a social media uh manager uh also does a lot of work on the website does the majority of
the work on the website and has a little section where he picks his headlines is that a blog i don't
know does he comment on the headlines does he write a little thing on why he picked them no
no it's not a blog man he's got a right i don't know come on jesse okay now listen check it out
sdpn.ca it's all brand new revamped and sexy now let's move on to the jets and knights by the way
If you want to, you can download the Sports Interaction app.

Jets and Knights.
First off, big shout-out to Morgan Barron.
75 stitches.
Comes back to the ice and plays.
Dude.
Wow!
I mean, what a warrior.
Holy shit.
So there's your Jason Spence's speech.
If you need a little bit of motivation for game two, anybody who lost,
dude got 75 stitches in the fucking face!
and returned to the game.
24 years old, first full regular season with the Jets.
He had 21 points in 70 games.
Are you not trying to win it for that guy?
Oh, my God.
He comes back to the bench after that many stitches?
Are you kidding me?
And I'm just, I'm trying to, oh, he's tied for second on the Jets in hits among forwards.
Now, he would have led them if he didn't have to get 70.
How long does it take to put in 75 stitches to his face?
There's no way that number's right.
They said 75.
Either that number is wrong
Or I am
Not questioning anyone
In the Jets medical staff
But I am somewhat concerned about the quality of those stitches
I'm sure they were done in haste
And that's okay
As long as they work
Just hold
Maddie throw this up it's a picture of his face
Warning for anybody who doesn't like blood
Delicious
So like maybe it's all those mini stitches
Cause like that's
I don't know how that works
Oh, my God.
I'm not familiar enough with stitches to know.
I don't know how stitches work.
I think they do make them smaller now, so they're not like fucking pirate scars.
If you look at my thumb, I've got a big slice on my thumb, and I've got scars from the stitches
because they were so big.
So maybe they make them smaller, like face stitches, so they don't show up.
If you can see in my camera right now on my eyebrow, there's a thing on my eyebrow, my
left eyebrow, this side, I think.
I can't see it.
A little.
A very tiny bit.
That's a scar from stitches.
I've never noticed it.
I think that one is from, I got two actually right in the same area.
One is, I got hit in basketball, just like pick up.
I used to play on Monday nights, and then I got elbowed in the head, and I had to go
get stitches.
And then another one was when I was like very little, probably like, I don't know, seven
or eight, I ran into a doorknob.
Oh.
I have one right here from running into a wall when I was a toddler.
And then I got a scar from that, so.
Nicely done.
All right.
Kids are so dumb.
Yeah.
i'm excited for when leo runs into something and you gotta take him to the hospital
i uh i don't think he's got a scar yet it's coming oh man how did i say that out loud yeah
no i'd like to uh not go to a hospital one day i remember when i got when i cut this uh in grade
seven i remember my dad's like listen you because my parents are divorced and have been since i was
two and uh dad's like listen we're going to the hospital you should probably call your mom i was
like oh yeah you're right so i'm like holding it with paper towel and uh and my dad gives hands me
a cell phone and i'm like this like but like mom i'm going to the hospital she's like what's your
mother stop yeah i'm like uh she's like what i said like i said well i was cutting some boxes
and i sliced my thumb she's like you okay i'm like yeah i'm fine she's like okay good night
meanwhile my mom had like a heart attack really like when i told her i broke my
Oh, my God.
My 34-year-old son.
You have a relatively minor injury.
Are you going to be okay?
Listen, everybody needs to find somebody to love them the way Tina Glenn loves you.
Tina, there is no love like the love of Clementina.
Yeah, Clementina.
It's true.
Clementina Maria.
So the rest of the game for the Jets, like, listen, this is full domination.
Shots on goal were 31 to 17.
Okay?
31 to 17.
That's a pathetic showing from the Vegas Golden Knights.
I guess that was going around.
Yeah, yeah.
I think that really the Jets' real strength here is domination of the neutral zone.
And like, Ehlers didn't even play.
So they bring Nino Niederreiter up to the top six.
Which is why he should never play, says the Jets coach.
Yeah.
You know what?
We would just never play him again.
He says he's ready to go.
Medical staff of the Jets say that he's not.
so um that's what right that's what a medical staff is there for that's right yeah i gotta say
i'm uh they there was no goals in the first period but as soon as the second happened it
sort of opened up and um you know it's it's it's a cool little matchup five years later of the you
know the golden knights and the jets playing but this is a this is a jets team that is really
sneaky good and when you have a good goaltender who's got the experience in the playoffs like
connor hellebuck does like it's like it's like the lease with andre vasilevsky like you were
talking about last night the lease are trying to make a comeback and they're trying to score
on vasilevsky through traffic but how it's huge so didn't work he's so fucking big and so is
hellebuck so so you need to take a lot of shots on hellebuck to beat him right no only 17 so
If you hit one goal every 17 shots
31 to 17 is the story
This to me
Paints the picture
It's 2-1
Winnipeg heading into the third
What were the shots in the third
Do you know
I don't actually know
Guess
They were 5-5
10-2
Jets
In the third period the Jets had more goals
Than the Golden Knights had shots
They scored three goals in the third.
The Golden Knights had two shots.
Unforgivable.
So are you saying the Golden Knights had a worse third period than the Leafs?
Yeah, it might have been the worst third period in the NHL last night,
and it was a slog to get there.
That's saying something.
The Leafs at least scored in the third period.
Yeah, there you go.
That's positive.
Guys, we've got to feel positive about this.
It might have been the worst period of hockey any team had last night.
It's so strange because just like score effects basics,
you should be out shooting your opponent when you're down a whole bunch.
Can you explain that a little bit?
because you talk about that a lot
and I think some people maybe don't know
the score effects, the whole idea.
When you are trailing,
you will outshoot your opponent
because they are in a more defensive stance.
We'll get to that when we talk about Rangers and Jersey.
No, we're not talking about the Rangers.
Team playing defense all game,
but you're going to outshoot your opponent
when you're down.
It's cross sports and it's strategic
and when it's not, it's mental.
like every team talks about no we want to keep the pressure on we want to keep our foot on the gas
and almost none of them do it because it's hard yeah like well fuck we have the lead i don't want
to be the one to make a mistake right but no one minds being the one to make a mistake when you
need a goal right so it's it's definitely a psychological and it by the way it's fun to see
the jets do that well i i i was worried about that series them establishing that in game one
I think bodes really well.
It is just one game, as we keep saying with the Leafs.
Yeah, but man, I think the Golden Knights still win that series.
I wonder too.
That's a pretty shit game one.
It is.
They didn't go to the playoffs last year, and some of their key players, like Mark Stone just came back from an injury.
The coach said he looked rusty.
Eichel's never played in the playoffs until last night.
But you'd expect a better showing from him in that instance.
Minus three.
You've been working your whole life to this moment, and you don't really show up for game one.
But I think they work out some of the bugs here that they had in game one.
They show up, they win game two.
And I don't expect that type of defensive performance from the Winnipeg Jets again.
Well, consistently throughout the series, they might do it again.
Because it's difficult.
It is.
It's very difficult.
This is a good hockey team.
And limiting them to two shots when you're up 2-1 in the third period
and you're putting up three goals is not going to happen all the time.
I don't know.
I still have the Golden Knights if I'm still betting on this game.
Every single Golden Knights forward had a hit.
the only two players who didn't were theodore and martinez which is wild for some reason but
it sort of just shows how little they had the fucking puck that wasn't a compliment
oh man look at them they're jonathan marcheseau was credited with nine hits
can i just say i doubt it like whoever's counting those i doubt it who the fuck gets nine hits in
a game that didn't go to overtime that's a good wheeler was talking post game about how uh throughout
the season they kind of struggled scoring at five on five and then that during during this game
they were able to do it and it was it was good to break through oh wheeler said it okay sorry
what did you i thought you were talking about vegas i'm like well then you're probably gonna
lose no i was like why are you so bullish wheeler was saying it in a positive way it wasn't vegas
Being like, you know what, we fucking suck
Man, the Jets are great
William Carlson said that, you know, the Jets are awesome
Sorry, what are your reasons for liking them again?
Sorry, I misunderstood
The Jets haven't
Really had a good run here
In the last couple months, and I think he was right
About them scoring at 5-on-5
I don't know, if they all of a sudden
Are the October through November
Winnipeg Jets, because of the playoffs
It'll be an exceptional
Run for them, because they'll go deep
if that's the team, but I have a hard time
believing that that's what we're going to see for the next couple of weeks.
I can't wait to see freaking Dave's smile
on Friday, too. Brady, by the way,
from Game Over is just
loving it. Liss is going in, I believe,
to CBC to talk about
the game. Liss is going to CBC Winnipeg
to talk. Isn't that cool?
They're doing a great job on Game Over.
Amazing. Amazing. All the hosts
are. I want to say this.
I want to break in with some breaking news.
The Vancouver Canucks have
a contract announcement
with Elias Pettersson.
Oh, hey.
Big one.
Is he eligible?
Oh.
Yeah.
Three-year entry-level deal.
Oh.
You suck.
Because I was about to say.
He's the defenseman,
Elias Pettersson.
You can't sign him
until July 1st.
That's right.
Elias Pettersson,
the defenseman.
You stink.
Who is 19.
The Canucks have two guys
named Elias Pettersson.
That's right.
Yeah, and they signed
him to a contract today.
Sorry, I had to.
We haven't even,
We didn't even talk about going into the previews that the Islanders Carolina Hurricane Series is the battle of the Sebastian Ajos.
Yeah.
See, at least they're on other teams.
Yeah, but it's so confusing.
It's extremely because Ajo takes the puck off Ajo, takes the puck back off Ajo.
Ajo, up the...
No, but whoever wins, do they get to keep the name?
And the other one's got to change it?
The other one's Steve.
Steve Ajo.
Steve Ajo.
The other one's got to be...
No, no.
No, but then you're still S-A-Ho.
Yeah, no, you need Adam-A-Ho.
Adam-A-Ho.
Sorry.
There it is.
Double A.
By the way, the Islanders need a little double A battery to supercharge their third period.
Jumping just to that game for a second, I know they're playing tonight, so when you
listen to this, you may have already started the game.
The Canes showed us in that-
Pedersen's not even up until next year.
I know.
Damn it.
I know.
Isn't that hilarious?
There is an RFA.
I got you, though.
Stop it.
Canes showed us exactly why.
they are the team that you
shouldn't bet against. We all did because
they don't have Svetch and Patches, but
man. I didn't bet against
them. I didn't bet against them either.
Okay, well.
I believe in the Islanders. So what?
And Isles Nation has always loved me.
Did you? I have
to say, the Canes
really, really
top to bottom great Canes. Did you have a party
during game one? Did I have a party?
When you saw Antiranta was starting. Oh, man.
I was like, man, they're going to win this game
They're going to win this game
If Andy Rand is starting, they're winning
I'm telling you, man
I've seen enough
Listen, Freddie is a good guy
He was great in the regular season
Enough of Freddie in the playoffs
Enough
They listened to you
They did
Did you give them a call?
Listen, me and Rod the Bot are on speaking terms, for sure
But it was, honestly, it was a great
That was a fun game to watch
Because it was like, it was the Canes being the Canes
And the Isles had some chances to tie that game.
Like, for a team that sucks at offense, they sure had some good plays.
Did you watch it?
You didn't watch it, did you?
No, I just, I'm picturing a scenario in my head where Rod is texting you for, like, workout clips.
Adam, what do you do to get your abs to stand out more?
Yeah, I just, I need to, I just need to figure it out.
You know, I'm such a slender guy.
Me being Rod Brindam.
Elias Sorokin was fantastic.
Yes.
It's just unfortunate that the Islanders couldn't put up more than one goal.
The Islanders only win and lose games one way.
So I did think it was funny that people were giving them credit.
Like, oh, well, it's tight.
Well, that's how they play.
Every Islanders game.
Every game is going to be close.
And if you can't get those extra goals, you're going to lose.
They win and lose one goal game.
Tell me you're not used to watching the Islanders without telling me.
Like, that's it.
Now, I do want to jump to last night's game.
And this is an important one because Jesse's got the jersey on.
Devils-Rangers.
here's the stat that stood out to me the rangers full-on committed to dominating and it starts with
the block shots 23 total jet the devil's head 12 and uh yeah it's it's that is a damn dude what i
tell you there's it was a team who's been there and a team who hasn't it was uh interesting reading
uh lazarus's post-game report because he put in there that the final 40 minutes felt like the
rangers were just on the penalty kill for the entire game and that's essentially what happened
because which is generally bad but it's what they do but it was that is that is exactly what it is
because you think like oh devils they're just they're dominating the play for the last two
periods of the game positive to take away from that it was like no the rangers were very content
was sitting back in their shell and just sitting there blocking all the shots not letting anything
through we're gonna wait out this game we got our lead we're gonna end with the lead we're gonna
win this game and seeing that performance out of them was it was very positive and and vitek
vanacek wasn't great um hey why don't you not allow ryan lingren to do go top shelf on the side
of the net like that was crazy sir that's not something you should be allowing in the playoffs
i don't know so uh rooting for the rangers you know it's a lot of positive stuff coming
coming out of game one but it is game one like if jack hughes maybe isn't a little
he said he wasn't nervous but i think a lot of scored on the penalty or sorry
scored on the uh didn't he scored his first goal did he not i don't know no no not i call uh jack
cues oh maybe yeah yeah no if they're able to play because the whole thing about the devils is they
can out skate the new york rangers all day long but it but that hasn't translated to offense in
game one and doesn't really translate to playoffs if they can kind of make that into playoff hockey
then they got a real shot here but i need timo meyer to go full nhl 99 eric lindros yeah like
as as a leafs fan i can't tell you how to win a playoff series i can tell you exactly how not to
win it though and it's how the devils when i look at how the devils played at least in the regular
season i'm like yeah the devils also had and here's how you don't win a playoff series the
devils had 13 giveaways rangers had three not great not great now they're young and they're
playing with house money this year now maybe you give the puck away because you're the one who had
the puck the whole time yeah but you gave it away except for when you gave it stop fucking giving
it away then well uh chris crider also uh became the new york rangers franchise all-time leader
in playoff goals no way they've played it you know what i was surprised when you first brought
that stat up they've played an unbelievable amount of playoff hockey yes they have in his
career he has 35 rebuild in the middle yeah yeah that lasted like five minutes uh uh canadians fans
should be excited because their their gm is the guy that did this um crider's 35th postseason goal
in his career broke a franchise record initially set by rod gilbert in 1975 he has 35 playoff goals
35 playoff does it say how many games uh i can look it up how did mess have he wasn't there that
long yeah right he signed with vancouver not too long afterwards yeah like he was there but he
wasn't you know but you think a couple deep runs well they've been okay so with crider they went
to the final once i want to say the conference final at least twice he's played 101 games
holy shit so that means the rangers have played 101 games almost unless he's been injured since
2011 2012 wow it's a lot of playoff games look at this his first year 18 games and then 8 and
then 15 and then 19 and then 5 12 3 20 last year won this year a lot of two goals playoff runs he
two goals and so he's got 36 total pretty crazy new york rangers underrated but buddy i've been
on board with you all year freaking shisterkin too like everybody and myself included was like
well it could be a crap he wasn't playing otherworldly to start the year i'm like well
maybe this is it i'm like trying to needle you he's fucking incredible last night the vast
majority of players this season who we've been like what's wrong with it turns out nothing
nothing it's it was like there they are remember after the uh the last lockout obi obi couldn't
score and uh people were like obi like what's going on he's like oh i guess i forgot and then
he and then he and then he led the league and go scoring you're like 35 goals in 20 games 32 and 48
there you go so stupid in the last but in the last he had as many goals as there were games
because he didn't score in the first like 10 right it was a ridiculous run he scored at least
like at least a goal to game clip for the final month and a half which is hilarious because that's
half the season jesse what do you have to add do you have anything else to add for your rangers
before i move on to the next game no no i think i think we covered okay now i want to talk about
this and drew was mad this morning drew or jesse sorry steve was already talking about it to see
how to crack it in their first playoff game ever stun the avalanche dominate the avalanche
three to one kind of a surprise they got no second line i saw drew complaining about that
And he's so right.
The avalanche.
Nazem Qadri.
No doubt.
Well, your captain's not there.
You know, you're injured.
Who's that anyway?
You're injured all up and down the lineup.
And yeah, they got a bunch of holes.
In the CJ Show group chat this morning, I think Colorado being so futile last night
really distracted Drew from the fact that he had to edit the LFR.
Oh.
Because he wasn't dialed into what was happening in the Leaf game at all.
Okay.
he was just preparing for the abs and then he watched the game and then it was time to
edit the lfr and he just texted the whole chat he goes jesus christ
was it like 4 a.m it was i'm like purple he's like whoa what the fuck happened man
wow and then he watched he's like oh all right i get it i get why you're upset but he did make
sure to be like it's a long series like don't worry blah blah blah but he would not tell himself that
for with the apps because it matters more to him right what's going on with colorado it's also
with all of these teams like i already said it but like a lot of good teams are down uh oh one
you know they're all yeah they're all good they're in the playoffs for a reason but a lot of the good
teams right now are down because the road team just dominated for some whatever weird reason
it's not like colorado's out of the series like let's i don't think they're that scared of the
kraken even though i think an upset might be brewing here i think colorado still can just be
like okay we can win this series we can get through one round but for the kraken moral victories too
yeah they won the game but is that not like moral and literal moral and literal but like it's like
hey we like they that's got to fill them with the confidence that like you want to have when you're
the underdog for sure yeah i like they're again playing with house money defending stanley cup
champions and they're probably young enough and ignorant enough to go what if we actually did
this and that's a scary position for the abs to be in it's the element of fuck you yes yeah we
don't care that you're the champions we have no Seattle gets scored on first they're like yeah
all right we sort of half expected this let's try to get the next one right and I think if
you're Colorado you get scored on first you're like oh fuck yeah no here we go yeah the game I
have um by the way seattle scored within the first five minutes of each period um so you know i think
it was tolvanen off the first one geeky was the was geeky the second period and then uh like that
that kind of stuff is oh it's wenberg in the second period geeky in the third that's the kind
of shit that kills you and here's the thing tolvanen was 326 wenberg was the second period
it was tied one all they go into it 80 seconds into the period he scores that is like a dagger
I know there's lots to criticize about the way Seattle handled the expansion draft.
But man, they've just been like picking at the scab of so many teams.
Like, how do you luck into Tolvanen?
Yeah.
How do you luck into getting that guy off waivers?
And also, how are you able to get him off waivers?
You were in a playoff spot basically all year.
That means most of the league passed on him.
what is the matter with any of you what are you doing this is a good player he's always been a
good player they put him in the proper position and look at that connor geeky too i was like
holy shit hurricanes can't lose this guy and no team wanted to get taken advantage of uh the way
vegas took advantage of the whole league it's morgan geeky just so you know what i say said
connor but that's okay oh connor i think his brother was drafted okay i want to say i'm just
Throwing that out there for the chat for the compliment section.
Yeah.
No, there's, I think I interviewed him.
Imagine having brothers.
It's weird.
Can I give you, you can give us anything.
The line combinations from last year's Stanley Cup final for the Colorado Avalanche compared
to the line combos that they ran out yesterday for the Seattle Crackers.
Is this with Kadri in the lineup or without?
This is with Kadri.
I'm just going to do top six to compare.
Last year they had Landis Cog, McKinnon, Lekkonen.
Unreal.
Nechushkin, Kadri, Rantanen.
Unreal.
Last night, they go out with McKinnon, Rodriguez, Rantanen,
Lekkonen, Kompfer, Nechushkin.
That's quite a drop-off.
It lacks a certain pizzazz, for sure.
And Nechushkin playing out of his mind, too, last year.
Yeah, I'm not sold on this whole Evan Rodriguez top-line thing.
I think it worked in the regular season for a little bit.
It worked against the Leafs.
It also didn't work at the end of the regular season when he was just a, like,
Evan Rodriguez production, if you wanted zero goal scoring, you put him up there.
Like, there was just no point production from him the last, like, two weeks of the regular season.
I know you didn't want to mention the bottom six, but, like, the bottom six is why.
Ben Myers and Dennis Malgan?
With Lars Eller.
With Lars Eller.
And then Matt Nieto, Alex Newhook, and Logan O'Connor.
like that why is evan rodriguez there oh that's why it's so uninspiring i mean they're down
landis cog and nothing but nothing is going to make up for that but oof um now if i were to
describe to you a game a game in which the second best player on the team scored twice
they were up three to one it's the playoffs against an opponent that they're fairly evenly
matched with three to one stranglehold game uh going into the third period in fact they're up
to nothing and then the then the team that they're playing scores a goal then i'm almost
immediately afterwards another goal while seven minutes afterwards yeah if i were to tell you
that team blew the game in overtime what team would you say it was the leafs right which is
why it's pretty wild and i've been really excited to talk about this game wild that it was the
oilers i thought they were past this i really did um and it is still
defense in the regular season is really difficult to evaluate
and i think in the playoffs it's easier to pick teams apart and um it does it is a bit of a test
right like it well i mean obviously but it's easier to dull their strengths and pick at their
weaknesses and i was seeing you know i was i was matthias echo matthias echo matthias echo
and all third period in overtime it's just oilers fans tweeting about darnell nurse
you know what i mean like yeah well and what i would surprise me is they weren't tweeting about
vinnie day or nay who was the one who took the penalty in overtime because they were too busy
complaining about the other penalty call that they didn't like uh from the third period that
resulted in the tying goal which that's the evan bouchard high stick right no the trip maybe maybe
i'm getting it confused uh and that was the over vinnie deronay was the trip bouchard was the high
stick oh okay so maybe okay so the bouchard one i don't know but the the trip was uh it's a trip
it's maybe maybe he went down easy maybe he went down because he stepped on the broken stick but
it was a trip is it a playoff trip well great question but that's how i saw it jesse
typical typical nhl media let's go these two sitting right let's go media not even toronto
international media yeah that's us talking about hockey oh course the toronto media
On the Edmonton Oilers
And how they blew the game
I gotta tell you guys
There was an unbiased
An ungovernment funded
Media conglomerate
That put out an episode of the Jesse Blake Sports Report
Yesterday
69% funded
And it talked about how
Some respect
Needs to be put on the Los Angeles Kings
Because it's not
hey the Oilers blew it it's no the LA Kings showed up and did what they do that pass from
Arvidsson was fucked oh goodness like Kempe had 40 goals this year Kempe had 40 goals this year
he had 35 last year it should have been a shock oh a talented guy in his mid-20s is getting better
whoa shocking well Adrian Kempe has one of the best shots in the entire National Hockey League
And what the L.A. Kings are able to do is with their crisp passing, they're able to get open in great areas in the offensive zone.
They don't play off the rush necessarily.
They're able to just find guys who are open in the slot.
And every player on this team has a terrific shot.
And Kopitar with his four points.
What decade was Anze Kopitar born in?
Every decade.
He's ageless.
He's born in the fucking 80s.
He's older than Steve and I.
Oh, yeah.
Is he?
And he scored with, what, 30 seconds to go?
Oh, no, no, no.
It was like 16.
Yeah, yeah.
It was less than a 13.5.
Yeah.
They are a very good hockey team, and the Oilers should be concerned.
Underrated ability is, a little shout out is owed to the King's front office.
When you're rebuilding, or at very least when you're heading into the trade deadline as a team that knows it's not going to make the playoffs,
knowing when to not tear it all down alex i have follow i really did for a while think he was going
to be a leaf oh i badly almost happened to be a leaf it sounds like it was decently close to
happening dude scores in overtime a year after it looked hopeless from uh two years the la kings had
a top four power play i think they're fourth in the league in the power play uh fourth in league
in power play goals and they did that on the back of a very great unit that is currently missing
uh gabe volardi and kevin fiala who traveled with the team who might be back for game two or three
terrifying they did that without two of their best weapons on the power play and that's where
they got their opportunities that's how they got back into the game that's how they they won the
game and they tied it so it can only get scarier for the la kings and if they win this series
they might be they're gonna be my pick to come out of the western conference it like it's wild
because we we talked about how the kings are improved from last year but like fiala was
supposed to be a huge improvement for them and he's not there and velarde i want to say was put
on waivers was it at the beginning of this season i think so and fuck there he is man that's a scary
team and this whole conversation has been had without mentioning the best trade deadline pickup
in uh corpus allo who was phenomenal who was it's not just a steal it's a battle of the two best
deadline pickups probably ekholm who's gonna be on the oilers for years to come which is crazy
and corpus allo was exactly what the doctor ordered for la like i'm sorry jonathan quick
but it was time to move on yep i i wasn't sold on it like i they needed a goalie i wasn't sure
that was the goalie and i guess i forgot how good he's been in the playoffs in recent memory
Did you erase 2020 from your mind?
I mean, it's what you pay a therapist for, Jesse.
Sweep it all under the rug.
He's the one who did it to the Leafs, right?
Him and Merzlikens, but I want to say he was in net for the deciding games.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he was in net for that game five.
That was brutal.
Boston versus Florida.
Shut up.
I watched the first 10 minutes of it and instantly knew.
But you could watch any 10-minute segment of that game and instantly know.
That is a hot knife through butter.
uh the after whistle stuff the taking the sticks all of that is hard enough to contend with if the
bruins were an underdog but they are poised to frigging slap you and that's exactly what happened
i think this is the series that i'm and i and i had this series bruins in five this is the series
I'm most confident
goes four.
It's still
really hard to do that.
It's hockey.
I get it.
But if I'm going to be
most confident
in one series,
come on,
it's got to be this one.
Winning four games
in a row
at any point
in the NHL is hard.
Yes.
Here's what I want to know.
What is the Bruins
playoff record
without Patrice Bergeron?
Because off the top
of my head,
it's 2-0.
Because they won that one
and they won against
the Leafs in 2018.
Like, what the?
Like,
If there was a game where the Panthers could go, this is our shot.
That is what the Bruins play like when they're without their captain
and number one center, and half of them have just finished shitting themselves
because there was an illness going through the team.
I was surprised to see Allmark start.
I know.
I know.
And they got one by him.
You know, it almost – does it almost feel like a Boston mind game?
Like, oh, they're sick.
maybe maybe and and then florida's like this is our chance to take out and and boston knows they're
going to slap them so even with the shits they get slapped around by boston a little bit uh and
then it kills your confidence forever kachuk still had a good game but it's just seems like
it's just him it's just him yeah it's their games are a concert what oh you think panthers no no uh
bruins and td garden oh man it was fucking rocking in there you know what crazy so next time you
watch a bruins game i wish i went to a concert like that by the way next time you watch a bruins
game and they score you'll see springsteen let's let's say the bruins go up one nothing in game
two watch the camera shots and you're gonna see a loud crowd they're moving they're high-fiving
look at the faces there's not an ounce of surprise oh no they expected this they're like they're like
anonymous it's like we're coming expect us yeah this is with with the leafs it's a little bit of
something went our way yeah no i sure hope this doesn't stop oh yeah whereas boston's like yeah
it went our way because we're fucking boston yeah goddamn right i think we see i think it's
gonna happen i think we see jeremy swayman you think what i think swayman's gonna get into the
game houseway i mean just do game one game two game three game four yeah i think they they toyed
their food here and he might get game four you know if they're up 3-0 despicable now uh the
minnesota wild and dallas stars played a just crazy fucking shootout for both teams you would
think were defensive teams the shots are 48 for minnesota and 53 for dallas playoff ottinger now
Now, it is two overtimes to get there,
but the thing that everybody's talking about,
because, again, Minnesota did win the game ultimately in overtime,
is the hit on Joe Pavelski by Matt Dumba.
Now, I have to read this because Michael Russo retweeted this.
There was a member of the Stars media who was calling for literal vengeance.
Mark Engel?
It, to me, crossed a little bit of a line.
That's what Russo was saying.
I think you can ask for pushback.
Dallas Stars need Marchment justice on Minnesota Wild's Matt Dumba for Pavelski hit.
Now, I don't know what that means.
I'll read you the article.
Brian Marchment would know what to do.
It probably would have been done by now.
Hockey lost the former infamous hockey enforcer in July 2022 at 53.
Few players in history of Dallas Stars remain.
Four-letter words like Brian Marchment.
He played from 88 to 2006.
I think when he joined the Leafs, didn't he?
uh and there was uh there was one moment justifiably defined his career as at least
a star fans it's that you delivered a hit that changed the team uh it's the type of
hit minnesota's matt dumba delivered in game one uh and basically he goes on to say that
um uh that you know matt that not only does mason marchman know what to do but max domey
knows what to do and that's target the other player literal blood vengeance um and i think
i think i there's no question that uh matt snomi actually did go right after dumba
but i think there's no question that people are um pissed pissed do you think that this was a hit
that deserved another look because it didn't get one right so it's we're we're watching it right
now jesse and i uh we obviously can't show it but um it's uh it's first of all i hope joe pavelski
is okay i haven't heard an update on him and it's really unfortunate that it happened to him because
this is yet another really traumatic hit to the brain for him uh he got that unfortunate incident
with cody eakin here we're watching it see what what cold coxham i think is the when his head
slams into the ice yeah it's more so what happens to his body that goes flying through the air
and then hits the ice as opposed to dumba hitting him so i i think it's a clean hit
if i'm being dumb until the last moment uh his feet are on the ice and by last moment i mean
so okay it's in slow motion he hits him there's still a foot on the ice somehow and it's not
until he falls sideways into the boards that his feet come off how the hell matt dumma stayed
grounded through that hit is unreal that ref almost died that really yo that ref imagine he
hits him in the knees oh yeah he's dead yeah like that's it that's an extremely hard hit and it
looks painful because of what happens to uh pavelski's head but i think i think in the in
the game like context it was clean the argument was that it was late and i want to say someone
reported that it was looked at and they deemed that it was almost late it was within they give
it a point six oh point six seconds i thought it was 0.7 yeah sorry well okay we're debating
we're debating what sounds like semantics but that's exactly what they were debating exactly
right like those those milliseconds i think it was uh so it might have been like the hit was
0.6 and the bar is 0.7 yes so we might both might be right there oh so yeah um either way i think
it's um i think it's it's a good hit like it's a clean hit yeah it's you hate and you can't you
hate penalize somebody for the outcome of the incident unfortunately no you can't no but what
this article says is like well brian marchman would know what to do and so now you can't go
out and target him you can't headhunt dumba now like that's well i think that's what they'll
probably do there'll be a little bit of that whether that's fair or not i think i think
there's a few things you should do when a hit like that happens uh the first thing and this is if you
cover the team or if you're a fan on twitter i guess because you're putting words out into the
universe number one thing is slow down calm down give it a minute yeah and but you know you could
probably cite several times where i've lost my cool yes learn from me please i beg of you i i'm
doing my best to learn from me and i don't even always do it but if you could that'd be great
so slow down tip number two don't evoke the dead what on earth is any of that why are you starting
you could have started with tai domi because anywhere but there no that made me crazy
uncomfortable yeah it's a weird article one thing um that i want to mention because i believe was
michael russo who also brought this up and and stats by smith uh just sent me a message that
reminds me of what happened here in this game i was like who's that um the game was four hours
and 10 minutes long that's that's one of the longest i think it's longest game of the year
you said right longest game of this this season um russo was talking about how by the end of that
by the end of double ot the building was half empty a lot of fans especially fans on the east
coast i i guess it's a monday i caught the rest of it the next day like being honest i didn't i
went to bed you asshole i went to bed before they figured it out um and like is that russo is making
the argument that that's bad for hockey not having having fans who need to get to bed by 1 a.m
leaving the building having the east coast not being able to stay up and watch the game i don't
know what the solution is because i don't you can't be starting every west coast game at five
local like just to appease or even six right you can't you can't do that so unfortunately i think
this is just the nature of you have a 10 p.m start in edmonton you got um uh 10 p.m start in la
if it goes to overtime it's gonna be two in the morning and half the audience on the east coast
got to drop off yep annually how many games go to double ot it's like max half a dozen yeah it's
very rare out of hundreds of playoff games i don't think you plan around an anomaly yeah i don't i
don't think it's anything that can really be fixed i think it's more of just the nature of
it happens six times a year yeah that's what it is yeah so anyways i thought it was an interesting
argument i thought i saw he was having but i don't think there's any fix to it i get it yeah yeah i
get four hours a long time for hockey yeah it's too long yep but you got it you got to play until
you play right yeah um so listen that's i saw the leafs at two and a half was too long we've got
well especially especially last night holy shit so we've got to do we're gonna do the press
conference all right it's 156 are we just gonna wrap i think it's uh it's time to wrap is it time
to wrap a roof yeah okay well then let's wrap a roof so listen we'll be back on friday um hopefully
we'll be celebrating
shaking it for you
on camera
excited about the Leafs
you know
that sort of thing
you can hit the button
it's all good
in the meantime
if I can make one request
don't go after players
or their wives
or their kids
on social media
thank you very much
are we already there
oh yeah
we're there
yeah alright
let's knock that shit off
it's playoff time baby
enjoy
