Starting point is 00:01:56 making it even easier to find flights now maddie uses sky scanner all the time she's our world traveler um but sky scanner football dash finder sorry football dash flight dash finder is the place to go if you're looking at that big soccer tournament next summer and thinking you know i'd like to be at a few of those maybe you put your name in for the lottery and you're in a few different cities it's like well do i sell my tickets or do i actually go to the game i know some people going to see scotland brazil where's that well they're going with the intention of cheering for scotland oh good luck yeah are you sure well you must really like scotland that they are going to be outnumbered in that place yeah yeah anyway so skyscanner.ca scotland
Starting point is 00:02:41 brazil is playing in miami no there you go thank you i wasn't sure yeah and you know there's no the thing about Miami is there's nobody from Brazil in Miami. Nobody. Hey, listen, skyscanner.ca slash football
Starting point is 00:02:53 dash flight dash finder. As Jesse was so easily able to look up there, you could just follow your country. I did it on the flight finder. It's pretty cool. Easiest thing.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Link is in the description. Check it out. Let's start the show. S-D-P-P The Steve Dangle Podcast with your host, Steve Dangle, Adam Wild,
Starting point is 00:03:16 and jesse blake let's go well hello there there is a lot to talk about today let's talk about today we're not going to start with the least we will get to them though um there's some stuff out of seattle uh there's some stuff out of buffalo they introduced a new general manager are we going to discuss some stuff hello we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna talk a little bit too about how angry new jersey devils fans are are with tom tom fitzgerald right now uh there is more than one fan base that's mad about quinn hughes and jesus turned against yeah it's crazy did you see that jesus turned against tom fitzgerald i thought you're just joking no there was there was a guy in philadelphia at the game yesterday uh dressed as jesus uh and he walked
Starting point is 00:04:01 to the front row and he placed his sign against the glass and the sign that jesus brought said jack hughes can't play near glass man philly rocks welcome to philly philly is absolutely nuts um so uh all that but first i want to start with an incredible moment between the pittsburgh penguins and edmonton oilers and you probably know if you watch if you're on twitter if you watch any of the highlights what i'm about to talk about here the first thing you need to know about this game is that they swapped goalies last week and Tristan Jari was able to play for the Oilers against the Leafs this weekend but Stuart Skinner started his first game in Pittsburgh wearing an Oilers mask against
Starting point is 00:04:46 said Oilers so weird and Leon Drysaddle was able to get his thousandth point against his former teammate just seven days ago and look at this look at this sad picture that is Stuart Skinner wiping the snow out of his crease as the entire Oilers bench including the backup goalie Calvin Pickard who's good friends with Stuart Skinner I was about to say like is he even allowed to go over to him like I feel like you should congratulate and look there's Jory like congratulations man I've known my whole life yeah yeah that oh boy poor Stu poor Stu and correct me if I'm wrong but was this not a power play goal that Brett Kulak was in the box for might have been or was that the McDavid one don't even know that's the McDavid one's crazy too Jesse let me
Starting point is 00:05:32 ask you this you're a head coach in this scenario do you have a problem if you're not you're not a head coach no you should be i'd be bad at being a head coach no you're a gm yeah thank you that's where my skills to each their strength jesse you're a gm and you've just traded for a goal okay comfy yeah and the goalie is stewart skinner and he just got scored on but it's leon dry sidles thousandth point and they've been teammates for like eight years do you have a problem with him going over and saying congratulations yes a hundred you're the one who allowed the goal do it after the game which he did yeah okay which he did you don't do that during the game stewart's gonna did the right thing and that would be a sad little boy in his crease uh because he can't you can't
Starting point is 00:06:11 go celebrate with the other team in that moment as much as you were on the team last week you can't do it oh not mid game no not mid game that's you're crossing a line like uh i think about jack johnson where he won the cup in in colorado uh their their banner raising ceremony was against the blackhawks who he signed with and they're like ah go join them for the banner raising that's fine yeah that's before the pregame yeah no as soon as the game happened no you can't pre and against me pre and post game all of these nhlers know each other and hang out and they're all buddy buddies most of them some of them hate each other but during the game you have lines we are wearing different uniforms we are not friends yeah and stewart skinner's on the other side now
Starting point is 00:06:55 unfortunately even though his uniform that he's wearing in his mask still says oilers uh the jersey he's wearing is a penguin you know i i was thinking about this too as i was driving home last night and and i was like man stewart skinner's got to be thinking leon could you not have done this against toronto like everybody sets their records we all thought he was gonna and like what it had to be me me and kulak was in the box by the way oh i think for both of them potentially yeah yeah i don't know man i just think it's interesting uh the other thing uh about that game there's there was obviously lots of play there um is that connor mcdavid i think has 20 points in his last seven games uh why is he cooled down uh yeah right i mean he is a point behind nathan mckinnon for
Starting point is 00:07:45 the lead in in scoring in this league and both of them are Nathan McKinnon's two points away from 60 points McKinnon is still performing like an absolute barbarian and like it's not like he's really slowed down no I mean maybe from like his psychotic pace but the fact that McDavid is very clearly gonna pass him is nuts nuts it's crazy I mean you give McKinnon uh maybe maybe uh grade him on a curve because like he's he's gonna score like 60 plus goals or something yeah sure holy shit that's crazy uh yeah anyway i just thought we'd start with that and also congratulations to leon dry sidle troy stetcher even he troy stetcher's instagram stories last night were interesting they had he had the joe bowen one right and then he had the leon dry
Starting point is 00:08:31 sidle one and i you could see why you're starting to see why and we'll talk about troy stetcher uh because he factored in pretty big in the leafs win last night um you can see why he's such a beloved teammate like this is a guy that is very good at celebrating other people he seems like a beauty yeah like it's like a good person i had no idea him and chris tana were good friends yeah they would tsn was showing that it was at his wedding yeah like obviously they would have played together in vancouver like oh yeah like i kind of forgot about that i had no idea they were that good of friends yeah crazy couple things on the mcdavid stats since december 9th he has 14 points that's five goals or six goals sorry eight assists that was over the course of five games
Starting point is 00:09:12 oh my god leon dry sidle his partner in crime over that same period has the second most points in the nhl oh and this is why the edmonton oilers are always cup contenders and should never be counted out because they have two of the best players but in that span leon dry saddle has zero goals what he has 10 assists which is the most uh points in the nhl since december 9th 10 assists, he's shooting 0% on 18 shots. 10 assists on zero goals. McDavid, 14 points. A bunch of Oilers fans hit me with the same chirp on Saturday night,
Starting point is 00:09:50 and I got to say, they nailed it. They said, welcome to Oil-cember, Steve. I was making fun of them for Oil-tober and then Oil-vember. Oh, no. It's Oil-cember, and we're all screwed now. I think this last month, I think, well, the start of December has really proven that McDavid said he was going to start scoring goals this year and that it's not that he was wrong. It's just we had to wait a little bit. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:18 Adam, you were getting on him about the, hey, I'm going to go out there and score goals things. Then you start scoring goals. And now he has started scoring goals and his partner has seeded the goal score. Right. And that's fair. That's fair. You know, that sometimes it takes a while to get warmed up. like october and november for the oilers is almost like the chamber they put deadpool in in order to
Starting point is 00:10:41 bring out his powers like they have to have to put him under stress in order to make him more than man and uh here he is now you can cut off his leg and it grows back that's mcdave that almost literally happened he replaced he sir he he repaired his pcl without a knife yep what and that was years ago how many points has he scored since repairing his pcl oh that's a good question probably well over a thousand probably like a billion kajillion yeah it's so silly he's a alien alien of a person um now uh i want to switch very quickly to leaf related but not exactly the game so darren drager was on overdrive yesterday and i thought he did a pretty spectacular job of calling out the toronto maple leafs for their injury policy without without really calling them
Starting point is 00:11:38 i think as an insider you've got to be more political than guys like us need to be right Because ultimately, you rely on people in the game, so that could be coaches or assistant coaches or trainers or general managers or agents or whatever, owners, for sources, right? And so I don't really blame an insider for that. And after a while, you kind of get a sense of what insider is hot in which market, what ones they're more connected to, which ones they're not. And Dregs is very connected to the Toronto Maple Leafs. and what i found interesting was he said well we know what what's happening with the raptors and they have their injury policy is they just tell you yeah now i wasn't sure jesse and i don't know if you know this because the nfl you have to disclose right yes it is league policy is the
Starting point is 00:12:33 nba league policy as well uh not in the same way that the nfl is okay okay so what drags was basically saying was it's the the fact that the leafs don't give you much of an update on injuries and we've got one to talk about um he said that's clearly not a maple leaf sports and entertainment policy it's just the leaf which would mean that because keith pelly is the ceo of all the teams and there's nobody above the general managers it's a brad treliving policy it's that's it's that's what it means because do you remember once upon a time the masai ujiri effect and how we were convinced that like him and kyle dubas were like this and that no i think they talked a couple times and they borrowed one or two things from each other and that was it and they complimented
Starting point is 00:13:23 each other in public which i think you know that's a good teammate in sports sure i think they're completely siloed off otherwise like i don't think the raptors and leaves talk to each other i don't know how they'd find the time you're you're doing a professional sports team no like not even not even the players like i'm like no i'm talking about management too how would you have the time i don't know shouldn't you be working on your team yeah well you can work on your team by talking to other executives you go to all these different pointless meetings where all you're doing is schmoozing basically does any business get done at these board of governors meetings where we know what's going to happen before it happens because there's one person who decides
Starting point is 00:14:03 everything and it's been the same way since 1993 like what what are the point of yeah you know what the agenda is and you know what the vote is before the vote's been cast and before the debates happened yeah guys like stop actually acting like none of us have television i see you when the camera's on you and you're on your phone use that time to text yeah other smart people well do you want me to explain the nba injury designation i would love to because it's it's a fascinating look at how another league runs their their injuries and how the nhl could be doing things but they choose not to okay so this is the rule from the official nba rule book nba injury report for the 25 26 season nba teams must report information concerning players injuries illnesses
Starting point is 00:14:48 and other medical conditions or rest for all NBA games by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game. Day before. Other than the second day of a back-to-back. Teams must designate
Starting point is 00:15:04 a participation status and identify a specific injury, illness, or other medical condition or other reason for any player whose participation in the game may be affected for any reason. For the second game of a back-to-back, teams are asked to report the above information by 1 p.m. local time on the day of the game. Reports are updated on a continual basis throughout the day.
Starting point is 00:15:28 And because you are required to do that, it is public information. And you can go on the NBA's website and pull up the injury report for every single team that's playing. And you get the reason for why they are out as well. Oh, wow. And it's updated like every other hour. Every couple hours, you can see all of the reports here. And I've gone to the most recent one at 1230 p.m. Eastern. The Cleveland Cavaliers are playing the Chicago Bulls.
Starting point is 00:15:54 They say Chris Livingston is out, and that's because he's a G League two-way player. Evan Mobley isn't going to play. Injury slash illness. Left calf strain. And you go down the list for every single player who's eligible to be in this game and the reason why they would not be playing, or if they are questionable, why they would be questionable. now here's complete transparent injury disclosure and and uh and and what's amazing about this is
Starting point is 00:16:21 they don't have to get too aggressive like you look at ty jerome there injury illness right calf strain that's all you know very simple two words right calf or left ankle there you go there's something we know and then they they go into we'll get to three words right thumb sprain you know like this is all we're asking of the nhl like i i would love this kind of information steve you can say your line about this league and what if it's real or not it's oh it is not it is like thank you jesse for bringing this up we need to clip this for social also like this has to be spread far and wide what a podunk hillbilly operation we have tied our wagon to like oh i sorry look at this look at the shit we deal with and tell me we cheer for a professional
Starting point is 00:17:16 sport so this is something that's been negotiated into the cba by the nba players association and the nba owners so it would have to be something that the players agree to and the owners will want and clearly both sides have never thought this was important to their fans the nfl has it i've brought that up a million times but here's the status of the nba which you know which has a stronger players union by the way than the nhl does yeah and is in the nba the nfl has essentially no players union yeah it was broken but the nba is more in line with the way the nhl operates in terms of the amount of games and how it is day to day and injuries affecting like us going at each other on the court and things like that like here's an example of somebody who runs the same
Starting point is 00:18:00 82 game season as you and they're able to do it and they're okay with their fans having this information and the media people having this information and everything's cool now let me let me jump in here oh crazy i've been with this because the question guys steve's in shock you've never seen this before no no no no it's like i um i i've heard stories of like adam's told stories like people coming over from like they lived their whole lives behind the iron curtain and then they went to the states for the first time and went to a grocery store and i imagine this is what it feels like like this is my first time in a grocery store wow i assume the majority of hockey fans if you're not also a sport a fan of other sports don't know like other leagues have
Starting point is 00:18:48 this type of stuff going on so the question will always be if you're if you're so there are people that will legitimately tweet us during the show or they'll leave a comment and they'll say okay i don't even need to know first off uh stop carrying water for gary betman but the question will be how pathetic why would a league do this oh you wouldn't believe how many people carry water for gary betman they don't even realize they're doing it what do you think about gary i hate him what do you think about the triple hard cap oh it's the great we need it everybody's gonna disappear we'll never have hockey again now here's what i i want you to understand okay there are two reasons why you do this the obvious one and the one that everybody's
Starting point is 00:19:27 gonna glob onto is gambling right if you're gonna gamble on a game you want to know if a player is gonna play or not yeah and why they're hurt and how and and here's the deal if i look up calf strain on google i can get an approximate idea even if the team won't tell me of how long a calf strain takes oh if it takes the average person two months well i can expect that with the highest medical care and these athletic freak bodies that all these athletes have yeah maybe half the time maybe 60 70 percent of the time that the normal person takes are you or aren't you going to be at work right so so that's number one so that's number one number two and this is a particularly important thing for the nba because they mention it in their rest right yeah the toronto raptors
Starting point is 00:20:10 with kawaii leonard had the load management thing they were the ones that really played that up and then other teams were like hey uh uh we're gonna do that too and then it became an issue because guess what uh you buy a ticket to a game and none of the fucking stars were playing yeah and so what what we have talked about since the beginning of the year and for me forget the gambling thing like whatever right oh and your fantasy team like as much as my fantasy team is my personality right now um i i will tell you that the reality of the situation is we are looking at a scenario where people are buying tickets to a game and they don't know if the jersey that they bought is going to play
Starting point is 00:20:54 and they don't know if in two months they'll be playing. Now, some teams make it easy. I point out, and I think the Senators, I'm just talking about Eastern Canada here because I get a lot of exposure to Montreal. I get a lot of exposure to Ottawa. Sure. When Brady Kachuk was out, hey, it's his thumb.
Starting point is 00:21:12 He's having surgery. He'll be back at the end of November. And guess what happened? He was back at the end of November. that yeah he was actually probably back before that yeah uh alex new hook uh yeah injury knee injury i think four months whatever the injury was i know it was four months oh that sucks new hook's got a lot of injury history yeah uh kirby doc you know another i think he's two months same thing why do i know that yeah and so what happens and and this is the this is the problem
Starting point is 00:21:36 and this is why i bring it back to dregs because i thought dregs did a great job of saying all right i'm gonna tell you without telling you whose policy this is and why actually he can't tell us why because no one can but in absence of information in an information vacuum people will make things up and Craig Berube after practice yesterday Jesse I'm not sure if you were there or after morning skate was no it was the day before Craig Berube had to say guys Anthony Stollers does not have a concussion right like we're playing guess who with injuries all right flick down concussion because everybody assumed is it water on the knee somebody assumed i love guess who there's a whole bucket see no that operation that's operation oh fuck i fucked
Starting point is 00:22:21 it up yeah i'm combining two games all right i'm doing guess who and i'll start doing scrabble yeah fuck pop-o-matic frustration so good i don't know what that is uh that's a different milton bradley game altogether how dare you by milton bradley because there was trouble what are you guys doing it's fun getting in trouble uh but i played frustration my point is this there is there is a what happens when you don't address the issue even slightly is people start making shit up and so what berube said and i'm going to paraphrase but you can go look up the quote yourself it doesn't really matter i'm not changing any details not a concussion needs to see a specialist injury not progressing and we know it's upper body and i believe it's his shoulder
Starting point is 00:23:07 uh shoulder and pec that's what i believe is happening i have zero because i believe there's history there and you know the reality of it is what you do if you're the toronto maple leafs and you're trying to make inroads with your fans okay and you're not winning regularly so you hired you hired ryan leslie to do skits with the players to bring the fans closer to the players which i think they're doing a very good job of sure you're trying to do some live streaming stuff i know they brought on austin alexander who's a great guy to do some skits and that sort of thing i think that's great interview with joe bowen yesterday from the bench side was so good it was awesome it was unreal they're trying the toronto maple leaves are trying to reach you but the best way to reach
Starting point is 00:23:53 toronto maple leafs fans is not an interview before the game is not a skit on social media it helps the best way to reach leaf fans is to be honest one of the things that annoys leaf fans the most or has annoyed them the most over the last few years from the players is what can you name it pressure accountability oh that yeah hey we oh i went the wrong we had a shit game well just flush it well no i spent five hundred dollars to be here for two tickets what do you mean flush shit how about you just say we played like shit and i feel bad about it and i hope we play better next you dropped a g on this game and you flushed it yeah mitch must have had like a powerful toilet yeah or the amount he flushed a lot of flushing well how many degrees does tavaris have
Starting point is 00:24:38 yeah well he mitch flushed it but tavaris is all about lessons he's got a master's in it he's got a master's in learning less that man has 14 that guy is more educated than neil degrasse tyson solo a shuttle to space and so again the leaf team the leaf brand struggles with the thing that leaf fans have been yelling about for years please be accountable i don't need to know everything about the injury yeah i don't even need honestly guys to know what it is because the NHL clearly doesn't think that it's important enough to negotiate in the CBA and the players don't want to give that information up. Although
Starting point is 00:25:24 I'm sure if the NHL asked, the players would just roll over and go, whatever you want, sir. But I will tell you that what frustrates me the most as a fan is not knowing timelines. And I'm okay with, I'm totally okay with, hey, it's an
Starting point is 00:25:40 injury that should keep him out a month, but we're not completely sure. But when Berube says, oh, well, it's not that serious he'll be out man probably a week you could just drop the i word what's that indefinite hey i can handle that i don't i don't know if you guys will be happy with that yeah that's literally the same situation no it isn't right no it isn't actually right now every injury is indefinite jesse's got a point no no no tell me how it's different tell me how it's different indefinite means we don't know what they're currently doing is we're not telling you
Starting point is 00:26:14 okay that's a big difference if you don't know you don't know and that's okay you cannot provide an answer to my question because you don't know that's okay they're just not telling us that is the entire difference and and i think what the leafs don't understand and if brad were in the room i would say this to him what brad doesn't seem to understand because this is his policy is that toronto maple leaf fans are not stupid we put a lot of heart and soul in this team and we deserve better than this. We deserve more than this. What you're giving us is not good enough.
Starting point is 00:26:50 It's not good enough. What you think you're able to do with this policy is backfiring and making you look bad. And listen, team doesn't look good already. And we'll get into that in a second. Team doesn't look good. It doesn't. They won.
Starting point is 00:27:03 You know what would help? A little bit of transparency. Yes. Not a little bit. Transparency. Not a little bit of transparency because a little bit of transparency is what we finally got from Berube.
Starting point is 00:27:13 And again, I will stress, in the absence of information, people will make shit up. And it's amazing how easy and quickly a rumor can snowball online. I know all these general managers have burner accounts. I know they're following all the members of the media and all the team accounts. I know they do. By the way, they do. I will just tell you that they should know better at this point. Social media is not new.
Starting point is 00:27:39 Twitter's not new. It's not back in the day when Oprah and CNN and Ashton Kutcher were fighting for who could get to a million followers on Twitter first. You should be educated in this, and you need to control the narrative. And for a team that is so, so, so controlled in their PR, oh, we're not going to let reporters in the dressing room. Yeah, sorry, we gave up a terrible loss to the Edmonton Oilers when we were up in that game. You can't talk to any of the captains tonight. you're so in control that you're losing control and that is embarrassing it's a four it's a it's an unforced error and it's something that's so easy to correct i don't rant over i don't get it
Starting point is 00:28:21 i don't get it either but it is brad's policy now now i'm obsessed with the idea that gms have burners like are you telling me that like uh maga cat 46 like might be bill zito responding to every panthers thing where i'm like why wasn't he suspended with clean hit like you're telling me that might actually be bill zito you think that they're not monitoring of course they're monitoring damn it they might not tweet but they're monitoring there's an account that says uh at bill guaven oh i love this quinn hughes guy yeah yeah man i'd give up ogren rossi bullion and a first yeah for him i that's one of my favorite things now by the way every time there's a trade and someone
Starting point is 00:29:07 like six months prior nails it. And everyone's like, what do you know? Who are you? It's Bill Guaven. It's Mr. Guaven. It's Mr. Guaven. Time for your Ready, Set, Forward performance of the night. Brought to you by the Ford F-150. Build out your tremor right now at
Starting point is 00:29:23 Ford.ca slash F-150. It's how I drove to work. I just have to keep sprinkling that in there. I had somebody actually come up to me at the Rick West head book event that we did in Kitchen and they're like, listen, can I see it? because i want to i want to jump in live your i want to know i want i want to test i might go to the dealership but anyway uh who is who wants to start anyone have a go ahead steve i'll start
Starting point is 00:29:44 we're all glazing the wrong oiler the straw that stirs the drink is back zach hyman had two goals in his first 11 games of the season he is on a four game goal streak six goals a hat i hate it so much goal goal goal and he did pick up an assist in there as well zach hyman is back and the straw you mean back hyman oh he's back hyman and he is just stirring those little ice cubes around making those nice little tinkle sounds i hate it jesse Blake I gotta give one player in particular a giant shout out not for just what he did last night but for the entire season and that's Morgan Geeky because he is second in the league in total goals he has 24 and Nathan McKinnon has 28 and then after that's Kirill Kaprizov at 21 he added
Starting point is 00:30:44 two more goals last night and he's a large reason that the Boston Sabres Boston Sabres the Boston Bruins are in a playoff spot right now and he's doing it with only 85 shots on goal this season he's shooting 28.2 percent I say he does when Morgan Geeky shoots the puck it goes into the back of the net whoa in comparison Kaprizov has 21 goals on 113 shots Nathan McKinnon has 28 goals on 155 shots whoa morgan geeky once again 24 goals on 85 shots if he almost half of mckinnon's if he takes four shots in a game he scored yeah mathematically two goals on three shots last night wow oh hey can i can i give you some more stats on that jesse so uh morgan geeky has played 111 games in the last two seasons he has 57 goals wow yeah 33 last year and then 24 this which is
Starting point is 00:31:56 insane the other thing that i think you'll find hilarious is he used to play it for a team called the seattle kraken he did he has more goals no than the highest scoring player on the kraken who is jordan eberly with 20 points oh wait he has more goals than the highest kraken player us points points that's ugly who's your uh who's your performer of the night uh that'd be macklin celebrini who came in big against the calgary flames last night a couple of goals one of them was an empty netter but it still counts and you know what i love about macklin uh there are three people in the nhl right now over 50 points mckinnon 58 mcdavid 57 celebrini 56 for mcdavid Oh, I'm at 56.
Starting point is 00:32:43 Excuse me. Celebrating 51. Ah, this kid, man. He's insane. He's insane. He's insane. He's insane. It can't be said enough.
Starting point is 00:32:52 Stay up late if you're an Easterner and watch a Sharks game. And we're like, oh, no, he might be the 13th or 14th forward. I don't know. Hey, you know what? The one thing I got to say for Team Canada is if you're concerned about the Olympics this year
Starting point is 00:33:06 and you're concerned, well, Team USA, they look strong. Canada's top three. They're the top three scorers in the league right now. It's a goal scoring contest. It was four the other day. There you go. I'm just saying.

Starting point is 00:36:10 Again, it's 25% off. SDP25G at G-E-N-A-C-O-L dot C-A. Last night at Scotiabank Arena was Joe Bowen Celebration Night. The reason that they did it midseason was because Joe Bowen's first game was a 3-3 tie between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks. now shame on me for not bringing up the box score in the LFR oh is that what you were going to talk about I was I was not going there but you can bring it up well so CJ sent it through it was a 3-3 tie did you know that the Blackhawks were up 3-0 no they were up 3-0 after the first they scored three goals in the first sort of like they did yesterday except one of them got waved
Starting point is 00:36:55 off and the Leafs came back and tied it two goals from Walt Padubny and Boreas Salming scored the goal to tie it with 89 seconds to go what date was that by the way uh is it already October 6th 1982 whoa crazy uh yeah like Denny Savard had a point in that game like that's Bob Murray like the that's oh and and and an assist on one of the toronto goals jim benning hey all right it was a long time ago for knucks fans everywhere i bet uh yeah legend uh now uh bowen put out a uh thing uh this morning and i'm not going to read the whole note but i think it's kind of beautiful uh he said last night's tribute at scotia bank arena was an incredible night that my family and i will never forget the outpouring of love uh was overwhelming and i very much appreciated uh
Starting point is 00:37:55 it was very so very much appreciated by myself and the bowen family cannot thank uh you all enough for the memorable night uh and he said then it goes on to say it has been my honor to be the voice of the toronto maple leafs the last 44 years i've cherished every minute of it thank you to the fans listeners viewers who have invited me uh in your automobile or your home to be a part of your family lots of games to be a part of going forward and we as we hopefully push for a playoff position in the long run this spring from the bottom of my heart uh on behalf of my family uh thank you now it was very cool to see his son get the opportunity to call the game last night yeah because he took the night off and his son is the sudbury wolves play caller yes that's exactly
Starting point is 00:38:33 right so they they allowed bowen to just have his moment in the box there um at scotia bank arena and they had his son uh do the call up and call the game and there he is they're calling the game so that was cool i wish we could play the call for the dakota joshua goal because it's one of the most magical damn things i've ever heard oh yeah yeah because matthews ties it and he loses his mind but he will not say holy mackinac he won't do it and as the story goes he's in the middle of saying well if they score another one maybe i'll pull it out dakota joshua is in the middle of busting into the offensive zone he scores and supposedly jim ralph gave him a tap and he goes holy mac and i die for you and your family and rumor is the arena ran out of rum and
Starting point is 00:39:27 cokes because of how the game went for joe bowen uh they they just ran out and the packers gear by the way they put they put joe bowen on screen and he drank a rum and coke on screen in front of the whole it was amazing that was the last one that was the last one scotia had yeah they were all done i don't know how they finished all of them beforehand but yeah you know the game and how it went i think uh i think they just finished them all yeah they just recovered from the the great ryan coke incident of the last time the packers won uh that happened at uh real sports i was there and he was very openly like go cheeseheads like just feeling no pain the leafs did a really cool thing they brought him into the dressing room everybody thanked him they gave him
Starting point is 00:40:08 a golden mic but then they also bought him a trip to notre dame for next season uh to send his entire family down there to see because they rent a bus every year they they rent one of those big rv buses and then all the guys go down uh every single year i remember uh when i interviewed him remember i was doing that podcast with saski for the leafs yeah we had him on and he talked about those trips and he said they're absolutely wild so this one's on mlsc next year well that which is nice it should be uh i was like that's all come on mlsc we could do more than that um i think 44 years i come on a trip for like i think should be 12 people trip for life trip for life mlsc i challenge you i do love that he he knows what he likes and everyone knows what he likes so
Starting point is 00:40:55 you don't ever have have to ask tough questions like do we get him an all-expense trip to jamaica No, we get him a bus to Notre Dame for a football game because that's all he wants in the world. They got him some other stuff. And a Leafs cup. And you might be asking if you're an out-of-town or you're not a Leaf fan, why are they spending so much time on this?
Starting point is 00:41:16 Well, I think it's important that you understand the stakes because Brad Treliving, as Jesse mentioned, was in the dressing room going, this is Joe's night, guys. And he's wearing a Holy Mackinac shirt. the implication was very heavily win this game you bunch of bums so after this i know i jesse i tamed down what i think he was thinking uh after this beautiful celebration and they bring him out on the ice and they give him this jersey oh there it is right
Starting point is 00:41:49 there yeah there's him in the there's bratcher living in the locker room with uh joe bowen and he told the story about where holy mackinac came from which was his father used to watch tv and when johnny bauer made a great save he would say holy mackinaw and then about 10 years into his career when felix pot fan came around uh joe uh randomly said it on mike and bill waters who was his play-by-play co-host at the time started howling and uh they kept doing it and i love it it was very emotional thing and what was so fascinating about it is that the leafs through two periods could not have been less motivated and what's amazing and this is this is this generation of leafs hockey and i i include marner in this as well you know because the whole thing
Starting point is 00:42:35 going back if there is a moment to meet i find the leafs don't meet it ever and ever so they did win the game which is weird but nobody if they are down three one in a series they can meet games five and six with bells on they cannot meet game seven it's inexplicable they game seven we've seen it more than once uh during this era it's their worst game of the series one of the one of the things that made me laugh this spring was jesse and steve were down at sport check doing our broadcast and leafs lost game five three two in the series they'd been up to nothing they had been up in game three they lost that game thank you and i say to jesse and steve like is it over tonight and they're like no they're going to win in florida and then they're going to come back and
Starting point is 00:43:24 it's going to be terrible and they both nailed it they got a shutout and then lost six one at home and so i it's so important they understand the stakes here this is a guy that's been here for 44 years they gave him the night off his family's on the ice he's dropping the ceremonial puck and through two periods the bedard list chicago blackhawks and levshinov I did not play when the Leafs played the Blackhawks in Chicago, killed them, killed them. He was a great player for the Blackhawks. Hilariously, guys, you're going to love this. The vaunted Chicago Blackhawks defense smothered the Toronto Maple Leafs, smothered them in the neutral zone.
Starting point is 00:44:08 The Leafs had nothing going on in. So here's how bad it was. They made Jason Dickinson look like Patrice Bergeron. It was so bad that through two periods at the end of the second period, Austin Matthews had had the puck 11 seconds. 11 seconds, no shot. Yeah. At the end of the second period, and I was saying this on the stream, guys,
Starting point is 00:44:29 I don't know if you noticed this. They had a, the Leafs had a power play. And it was Matthews and Tavares and Riley and Nyes and Nylander. Right? As it normally is. Sure. Tavares in front of the net. Matthews on the right side.
Starting point is 00:44:46 Nylander on the left side. Riley at the point. Nyes down low in the high left spot. Praise be. And what happened the entire power play? What? And this is the Leafs season in a nutshell. The passes went from Riley to Nylander to Nyes to Riley to Nyes to Nylander to Nylander to Nyes.
Starting point is 00:45:06 Can you imagine a scenario where the 90s Chicago Bulls do not pass the ball to Michael Jordan? Can you imagine a scenario in the last 20 years where the Clippers, sorry, the Clippers, not the Clippers, the Cavaliers, the Heat and the Lakers do not pass the ball to LeBron? Can you imagine the Raptors not passing the ball to Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, Vince Carter? Or I'll give you a hockey example that's a good one. You know those clips of Ovechkin standing stock still and doing nothing for 30 to 45 seconds? They're so funny because he is literally not a joint on his body is bent. He is standing there like he might as well be in the front row. He could be in the front row.
Starting point is 00:45:58 He could have popcorn. but you ever notice those clips always end with him shooting it from the same spot for 20 years the toronto maple leafs cannot get austin matthews a puck now there's a lot of problems with the leafs i think matthews owns some of this too but that power play if you really want to if you really want to nerd out go watch the power play at the end of the second period they do not get him the puck one time there's a lot of narratives around matthews and his his skating speed slower and his shot slower and sure man shot looks all right i think like in the on the goals he has scored you watch and you're like i don't know
Starting point is 00:46:44 that one looked pretty good he's got to get the puck more tsn had some stats yesterday and people were parroting them at at me in the in the chat last night guys and you know i think they're relevant and jesse i think you had it too is the speed burst thing yeah and they also and they also had the shot the shot the hard shot part right the speed thing is the one i like to highlight in the nhl edge data because yeah i saw tsn going at some of it so i want to check for myself i can show you guys here just how the work's done uh so this year austin matthews's max skating speed is 34 kilometers per hour, 34.72 kilometers per hour. If you drop down menu here, you'll see in 2425, it's 36.22 kilometers per hour. In 2324, it's 36.16 kilometers per hour. In 2223, it's 36.13
Starting point is 00:47:36 kilometers per hour. And we go back to 2122, it's 35.67. And look at the hardest shot. Look how much So that every year is higher than what he's currently producing in 24, 25. But if we take a deeper look into this 34.72 number, which is below the 36s that he consistently has, and you scroll down here to his games and his max skating speed per game, you'll notice that the 34s only happened three times this season, and all of them happened on October 8th, 11th, and 13th. after that he has not had a max skating speed above 33 kilometers per hour 33.9 kilometers per hour so there is clear evidence by the data and the science that they have provided us
Starting point is 00:48:22 the nhl has that he is slower this season and i don't know why call me crazy but i have a theory that's not how you pronounce your name at all uh oh yeah my name is adam you can call me adam but you can also call my opinions crazy oh uh this is how the toronto maple leafs play hockey right now and yes i will listen to people going well he might be a little hurt he might not have the same fastball that he used to have fine i'll listen to that this guy's had injuries i get it sure but you can't tell me at this point that the toronto maple leafs anybody looks fast well they are the slowest fucking team in any sort of transition i've ever seen they made the blues look competent and the blues are so the blues are glacial they're hopeless it's crazy and so when
Starting point is 00:49:13 you look at austin i i look at this guy and i'm like listen people are gonna they're gonna say i already know what the comments are gonna say they're saying this is a 13.25 million dollar player what if this is a guy who needs to drive his own line yes hockey is a team game somebody must find him with the puck it isn't just you know what when you watch Nathan McKinnon play you know what Cale McCarr does finds him yeah do you know what people do when they're on the ice with Sidney Crosby they find him why do they find him because he's better right you know what the Toronto Maple Leafs do not do they do not find their best player ever and the system is so fucking slow you know it's funny we ISO Matthews on that I'd love to have a look at Willie that's what I was
Starting point is 00:49:52 about to love to have a look at Tavares love to and and if Matthews is slowing down I'm sorry when was speed ever a huge part of his game it's not about that he's you can change your game he was quick he was quick but it wasn't like he wasn't mcdavid he wasn't mckinnon you're not looking at austin matthews going whoa that was a blazing rush by austin it was it was deception um he worked hard he got open and his shot was better than yours yes and i will listen to he's looking off a lot of shots he's not taking the right 100 i will listen to that but guys i got i got an issue here with the coaching i can tell you that william nylander's max skating speed is the fastest it has been in his entire career based on when nhl edge data has been tracked well there
Starting point is 00:50:38 you go that's what about johnny t that's his max though that's the one we were using for austin yeah yeah but but like austin how many times did he hit it though is what i'm saying like i don't care i don't care what his top speed is this season you know what i mean like look at that how many times has he hit so but that's okay so the max skating speed um wow that's a lot is at 37 he's at 36 34 34 consistently so he hasn't really hit it his max speed well since this seattle kraken game which was a disaster yeah so one time against seattle and one time against utah he was absolutely hauling ass and then beyond that he doesn't seem all that much faster than austin does he no yes but we're not we're we were talking about if he's faster or slower in
Starting point is 00:51:23 comparison to his career yes yeah we were you know it's not about is he faster or slower than austin but i think faster than himself but for the point i am asserting i i think that william nylander's lack of speed on the rest of the games backs up my point which is whatever happened in the beginning of october the leafs were playing faster then maybe they weren't as good but they were playing faster and William Nylander speed bursts have all fallen off the cliff since the two I don't think that I think there's one outlier where he's considerably faster I don't think it's fallen off if that's just like one peak I think he's been fairly consistent with where he is which is 34 kilometers an hour yeah with where he is for the majority of his career and like where he's
Starting point is 00:52:04 last season I'm trying to say there's not been a dip in Nylander's max speed as opposed to last season of this season okay and i'm and i'm trying to say that the amount of times he hits his max speed is more important than his max speed or the more the amount of times he hits over a certain amount what i'm telling what i'm seeing is i'm seeing games at the beginning of the season jess both graphs are the same where matthew's max speed beginning of the season willie's max speed beginning of the season and what happens is the graph gets smaller and smaller the further into the season we get right is that not you know the graph's getting smaller and smarter because it's organized by the time when they hit the speed oh okay it's not it's not based on date like that's
Starting point is 00:52:44 why austin's is actually noteworthy because it's organized and those three at the top are from october yeah the the willy ones we just brought up briefly like those are organized by like 37 36 36 so that's why okay so it's just you're like your top 10 basically yeah i got it okay yeah my point is this my point i'm saying there isn't like scanning it quickly there's not immediate evidence to say that multiple players are experiencing that same drop in speed that austin has experienced this season where he's consistently very under the number he was at the previous four seasons okay and that that is concerning now i have seen players change their games hey i'm not as fast as i used to be i'm gonna have to change the way i play hockey
Starting point is 00:53:29 all right larson's playing the best he's played in a decade yeah because he figured out a new way to play once he left vancouver which i'm sure canucks fans are thrilled about of course um i i think what's happening here is twofold system doesn't work for austin and if the system doesn't work for your best player then you got to change the system austin's not bought in anymore and it's just and it doesn't mean man that he doesn't care it doesn't mean he lacks passion i i heard a lot of that on the on the stream last night i don't agree with that at all who more obviously hates who more obviously and openly hates their lives viscerally more than austin matthews and william nylander right now they so clearly to me are not
Starting point is 00:54:18 in on this guy no at all and you know like jeff o'neill was having this discussion on tsn and like his points valid like craig berube is craig berube you can't just you can't just fire the coach and the counter to that is yeah you can um i aim to do it all the time austin matthews is austin matthews you can't just change the player well this is it's way easier how about this you literally can't trade austin matthews are you guys same with willie are you guys both advocating for it's time for the head coach to go well here's what i want to i want to i think he's in a bad spot here's i'm going to give you this i'm going to i'm going to send you something midway through the first period the toronto maple leaves had already let in a goal and they did let in another
Starting point is 00:55:07 one but it was called back because joseph wool's pad was pushed and the it was goaltender interference it was called back this is the moment i think craig bruby lost his job like to me to me i and i 1 000 percent agree and that's it's funny you can see it on my stream if you go back and watch yeah at that moment i'm like guys he's lost the room oh yeah he's lost the bench it's totally over for him and what do you see him saying steve he goes and it's not lfr anymore i'm on the podcast one fucking shot on net one and they heard their coach say that there it is and and they said let's grab the bull by the horns and they got 15 out of the next 20 shots on goal kidding they shit their pants with the speed and force of a jet engine how so and gave up a shorthanded goal
Starting point is 00:56:10 and whose fault was it by the way that they gave up a shorthanded goal i'll leave it to you william nylander and i couldn't come up with a way to describe how nylander looked on his goal so i told a story from adam were you at leadership camp in high school i was and i and you were talking about uh mike tasker running well you didn't have to use his full government i wouldn't care mike wouldn't care i was in i was in the room for this by the way mike was one of the funniest people i've ever met giving out people's government mike's the best he's the best guy in a cabin full of boys teenagers was like i don't know how it came up but he's like i bet i can piss and run at the same time and brennan underneath brennan fry was like no you
Starting point is 00:56:55 can't no you can't so we all gathered outside there's like 20 of us yeah it's like 1 a.m it's like 1 a.m he turned his back to us you know decency after all of course and he with his pants like around his like just above his knees tried to run and piss at the same time and he didn't end up pulling it off and that was the number one comment under my youtube video by the way could he do it did he do it he didn't do it didn't do it but that's what nylander looked like and i'm like man like willie always roll us through here jesse like he looks casual when he does anything that's why he's got aura and yeah it's part of his aura but it is definitely slanting towards doesn't give a flying fuck yeah
Starting point is 00:57:51 this like he bobbled the puck just before the blue line and the blackhawks were able to scoop it up right it was an easy zone entry easy it like will yum he tripped over the blue line essentially with the puck without falling and like sick or whatever also does not intercept this pass he's right there he's in position he got it he got a stick on it he did get a stick on one-handed though i know for a brief moment in my mind i was like yeah oh it's hard for me to blame tavara no i don't blame him either it's just it's just william nylander put them in that position yeah hey jesse cool hat thank you it's from fanatics it's a winter classic florida panthers hat toque in canada yeah and it fits over your headphones it does it's it does they make it
Starting point is 00:58:42 they make it nice and stretchy that means it fits our head naturally one size all fits all yeah i gotta i gotta say it's a well-made hat and i should hate it like on principle yeah yeah yeah that's nice you should hate it because it's about to elbow you in the face it is what are you wearing steve i am wearing something from the fanatics lululemon collection says lululemon on the chest and just a little little subtle leaf there on the left gun or bicep i think as it's Python. Starting point is 01:00:30 Now until December 31st At participating A&W locations in Ontario and so they've given up you know at this point they have three shots on goal they just gave up a shorty uh and their power bailed out by their coach and video staff oh well previously yeah yeah yeah yeah but what i'm saying is is is that the the power play itself is also so bad that it's tied for 30th in the league yeah so it's either 30th or 31st depending upon how out last night went and they ended up scoring a power play goal later we can talk about that later the reality of these first 40 minutes even i would say first 50 minutes of the game which is
Starting point is 01:01:23 five sixes of the game is the least we're not in it no they whenever they got the puck deep they had to change because they'd been pinned in their own zone for so long and i i if if the coach's job is not to get the best out of their best players then what is the coach's job if baruba like listen i'm not saying baruba is a bad coach i've seen bad coaches with the leafs this is not a bad coach this is not a bad coach he might he's a good coach he's a stanley cup winner he might even be a great coach but i am convinced now that craig brube is not the right coach for this team i'm not convinced convinced that the x's and o's are rocket science they're not these guys know hockey he's so he's so damn smart no one could possibly be like you know the puck
Starting point is 01:02:15 and all players be like oh yeah yeah yeah black disc and they write it down and they write p u c k and the k is backwards and then you go okay so get that okay so dump the buck no no go like get it and if you do dump it i don't have to take a dump no it's not that's not what i said like these guys aren't idiots the thing about two when they do dump it in jesse and steve that i notice is they never win the puck battle yeah they've quit they've quit on their coach and like last night was almost like okay so rockford's in town yeah we're gonna take 50 minutes off and then just win in the final 10 just to prove a point like i know that's not what happened that's insane but that's definitely how it felt they they have done that in the past i don't think they've got the ability
Starting point is 01:03:08 this is their second game this season where they didn't play pittsburgh was didn't play yeah at all oh no no no no they were second but didn't play did not they were in their uniforms in spirit and nothing else and then in the final like 10 minutes they went all right and then they won yep hey you know what the Oilers did one well they didn't win for a long time and they had several coaches they had like remember they had Dave Tippett guys or Dave Tippett was how many coaches ago was he uh he was three or four yeah he could he could i would believe you if you told me he was the last one uh tippet was in there i know we i know tippet was there because i remember being at virgin radio with jesse when tippet was hired and then i remember when he was fired and
Starting point is 01:03:59 they brought in this unknown guy named jay woodcroft and people were like wow it went mcclellan hitchcock tippet woodcroft knoblock there you go so tippet hired and fired oilers were not great I think when Tippett was there, that was the year that they had like a league worse, like 50% on the short, shorthanded, like it was embarrassing. And they bring in Woodcroft and these defensive metrics start to get better. And it's like, oh, they're coming along. And then a couple seasons ago, Jay Woodcroft's like galaxy brain. Let's completely change the way we play hockey. I am smarter than everybody I'm so smart that I'm going to get fired a month into the job and not get a job for 18 months afterwards and what do they do they go Connor Jay didn't bring out the best in you even though you're amazing who do you want us to hire and he goes you know my junior coach uh might be a good pick what fucking happened Connor McDavid has two of the best seasons of his whole life not just regular but playoff insane like Connor McDavid put to bed
Starting point is 01:05:07 some of the greatest playoff performances we've seen just since 2020 I'm talking Kucherov I'm talking uh uh whoever was like Petrangelo had some amazing ones we're talking about and I know Petrangelo is a defenseman we're talking about Nathan McKinnon in 2022 we were talking about Miro Haskin and it's like a top five defenseman in the world and then he just doused him in kerosene and lit him on fire mcdavid with the right coach has turned and look at look at what's happened again slow start third season in a row and he's got 20 points in his last seven games goku training under harsher gravity to get stronger my point he's just like was he just screwing with us for two months this is this is the thing you have the players that you have
Starting point is 01:05:52 and i know that the leafs have already been through all three head coaches you know what you know how many coaches they've been through in the connor mcdavid era five five and you know what you do when you have a player like connor mcdavid you go how do i get the best out of him yeah but adam the best out of him adam you can't fire the coach but you well they've got 11 million dollars left to in two and a half years left on that deal steve that's when i when i heard like mlse didn't enjoy paying mike babcock not to coach for them i was like i really i i really hope you get beat up you're the building you're billionaires build up the just beat up the just the anonymous they like you're billionaires talking about like what you're shut up and you're
Starting point is 01:06:35 worried about five million bucks a year shut up yeah relax shut your freaking mouth yeah yep this was always a possibility if you don't enjoy that possibility happening then don't agree to the contract oh did you agree to the contract all right well okay so here's some free consulting i'm not even going to charge you for this shut the fuck up and i'll throw this at you babcock specifically stayed out of the nhl to spite the leafs until his deal was up and then he signed with columbus right uh he did that on purpose that's or at least that's the rumor i mean it sure seemed like it brube wouldn't do that brube would get hired maybe you would and the least would be off the hook i don't i don't give a shit if he does but i will tell you i don't i don't
Starting point is 01:07:24 care if they fire him and he opens an etsy and never coaches again if he's not the right guy he's not the right guy i hope he i hope he doesn't i hope he does too do craig berube action figures i jesse i need to know from you i gotta know what the vibe was in the press room after the game i saw joshua's clips i saw matthew's clips what did you feel from the players and the coach there's one thing on the coaching thing that i thought what steve said was really interesting uh about the motivation thing because if on the yelling on the bench part because if they stick you behind the bench yeah you can do that like if if craig brube is there just yelling at them you have one shot on goal get more shots on goal that's a job that any fan with the amount of passion that you
Starting point is 01:08:12 have could do behind the bench and wants to do and does to their television so if you feel like the yelling that anybody can do as long as they respect them and they listen to the yelling then it's effective if you feel like that's not getting through the players and the x's and o's that craig brube brings to the table because coaches all have their own system how they want to play and all that if you feel that's also not effective plus the yelling isn't effective then i think you're not wrong and what's the point of the coach like you know there's been a conversation about the Tampa Bay Lightning this season and it's centered around Darren Radish this defenseman who I think was once highly touted but has really has had a really mediocre nondescript career he's played
Starting point is 01:09:07 for a few teams he's played a bunch of games hasn't really wowed or anything he's gone to tampa and he's like one of the best right-handed defensemen in the division and it's crazy and i saw i think it was grav he's like we need to have a conversation about tampa's pro scouting staff now sure like give them their due but what if john cooper who we all seem to acknowledge is a top three coach on his worst day he's our coach for our flag yes what if he's absolutely incredible at his job and that's why he routinely gets performances out of guys you've never heard of in your entire life like the conversation is who cooper maurice paul maurice for sure yep bednar i would think and then yeah you know you could be like you throw cassidy in there
Starting point is 01:10:05 sure that's a great years with the bruins won a cup with vegas and some people are going to scream brendamore are you talking about just the conversation about best coaches in the game we have yeah i would throw spencer carberry into there yeah he's quickly yeah i think what he's able to do with the x's and o's part of the game is special there's less sample there but like well i'd say he i would agree with you 100 there's different style and he's light guy he's a light guy cooper can scream and does often scream but uh like he's litigator he's he's cool youth pastor like that we've talked about and like here's what i think we're gonna try on the breakout bling and he starts playing you a little acoustic ditty yeah about what the breakout should look
Starting point is 01:10:56 like paul maurice is you know sometimes we don't think enough about fit hot damn has a coach ever fit their team better than prison rules paul and the construction of the current florida panthers no other coach could do as good of a job with the florida panthers as paul is right now hey what if you just went out there and killed everyone and also i'm just gonna get your freaking adrenaline going the florida pound their dog that you're told not to rile up and you just go and you just get them to go nuts and then they do whatever you tell them to do right leafs do that no they're the dog that doesn't even get out of bed when you come home um they have no psychopaths on the roster that's part of the yeah but like
Starting point is 01:11:47 okay like maybe that's just not the team that they are they the beginning and middle and end is whoever is in the wrong here is irrelevant um they're not listening to the coach and it has happened many times for many teams in many eras it's not the coach's fault that they're not listening but they're not listening and it is his responsibility you've absolutely it's part of the gig life sucks wear a helmet it's not fair it's not their it's not necessarily their fault they're not listening but they're not listening he gets fired you bring in another coach who probably isn't even as qualified doesn't have the experience doesn't have the the winning pedigree doesn't have this doesn't have that
Starting point is 01:12:40 but they play for the fucker so where i think like it might be a fruitless endeavor this entire conversation about getting rid of the coach and mixing things up is they've repeatedly not publicly but behind the scenes you kind of know they've repeatedly shared that brube and keith pelly have a relationship and the guy who's in charge of the whole thing is a big fan of that guy yep so adam you probably can speak to this a little better because of your close ties to mlsc's ownership and the billionaires and millionaires that run the corporation because of your close ties with the sushi fest over there um it's they don't want to fire craig berube because the guy who actually would make that decision likes him and keith pelly gets paid a lot of money to make
Starting point is 01:13:29 hard decisions and i'm not saying that it's fair to craig berube but it is on craig berube and you time and time look at look at what listen the same happened with craig mike yeo was it his fault that the blues weren't listening to him maybe not but it was his responsibility and doug armstrong held him accountable put berube in there what happened they go from last and they win the cup and what did he do near the end people forget throw a stick into the uh into the crowd it was yeah him and glenn galutz and i've seen them both do that it was at a practice yeah yeah so he was pissed and he screams at the team and smashes his stick and he talks about work ethic and how about you talk about filling out your resume goodbye and they
Starting point is 01:14:17 bring in Craig Berube whose resume was what exactly like when the Leafs hired him I forgot he was ever head coach of the Flyers I did yeah I completely forgot that too yeah because it was forgettable and he comes in helps that they get a few saves win a cup there's that clip of him like you know you see keith pleading with the leafs please do this please do that and then there's that clip of berube in hell itself td garden for game seven of the stand of the cup final and he has this big speech and he comes out of it here he ends it with we're coming out of here with the fucking cup tonight and i was like oh my god give that guy 10 million dollars and i don't regret feeling that way but he's been the coach here for a year and a half now and like i
Starting point is 01:15:13 don't think i'm offering an opinion i'm offering a truth they do not listen to this man and and by the way people will say well they didn't listen to sheldon or mike babcock either i agree babcock they did listen at the beginning yes yeah and and then mike babcock alienated the team because that decided to be a giant asshole and nobody should ever listen to that man ever and they realized yeah they grew up and they're like man this guy sucks yes uh keith the problem with ruling through fear is eventually they stop being scared yeah uh and and the other thing is keith they did listen to him too and but they didn't listen enough and you know what what stopped sheldon keith from truly reaching these kids uh was the fact that kyle dubas and brendan shanahan
Starting point is 01:16:00 if you even slightly criticized any of these guys they would cry about it and their their management managers would cry about it and their family would cry about it to management would call them and be in the arena in their face going what do you mean the coaches calling my guy out my kid out in front of the Toronto media they did it they did it so just to regroup back to when you asked me about the press room after yesterday because I think this dovetails into what we're talking about with Berube a little bit of what happened last night after everybody talked was confusion at the narrative from the coach and the players okay in that I think Steve you didn't really freak out about this because I don't know if you caught on but the narrative
Starting point is 01:16:47 coming out of brube and matthews when they were speaking was that they didn't play a bad game oh yeah from the second period onward from the entire game are onward is that what they said i didn't see i didn't see well then what's all the screaming for there craig so i didn't see matthews or no i only saw matthews say this i didn't see brube say it and they can wipe their ass with the words that's why i want to play it for you guys because craig brube when asked about the terrible start by the leafs comes back and says it wasn't terrible okay it wasn't terrible so here's what he's go for it what's the uh what's your feeling on this game i mean such a terrible start for you guys well actually this first part of the first period wasn't a terrible
Starting point is 01:17:37 start it was actually a good start to the game wrong give up a shorthanded goal kind of it's a tough one but that was the third goal you know yeah second was a little better and third was our best period uh which was great to see yeah you think um battle back um thought our top line was really good tonight thank you gassing him up he's gassing up the guys he needs to gas up to keep his job and he's lying he's not telling you he's not he's not stupid yeah he's not telling you his honest thoughts in this game are you joking and matthews his sentiment was not dissimilar in that he thought they competed hard i can play you his exact words as well um but might might i might add to that jesse because you were there is it not true that dakota joshua and austin matthews both
Starting point is 01:18:27 acknowledged the boos that were happening yeah and said they didn't blame anybody yes so if that's why they played a great game so which one is it yeah i got i got hands on both sides of my face right now because i'm talking out of this side i'm talking out of this side because i'm trying of Maple Leafs players right now in the postgame which is it here's Austin Matthews who admitted that the boo birds were coming down but also they didn't play bad how do you describe a game like that starts the way it did and then the way it ended yeah I mean it's obviously it's a nice win I don't think uh I mean I think other than maybe the last 10 minutes of the first period I thought we played you know pretty pretty solid I think it just uh got away from us there after 10 and
Starting point is 01:19:09 i don't you didn't have a shot on goal till there was five minute four minutes left in the game and you think you play great if we pulled you're solid if we pulled a room of the 1.3 million people who watched last night's least game or whatever i don't think they're all fucking idiots apparently majority of them would describe the least performance as solid no i i don't think the Leafs have looked solid all year. Matty audibly said no. That's amazing. Matty, who is in the literal broadcast truck,
Starting point is 01:19:46 like part of her other job. That's funny. You get paid to watch hockey for a living, Matty. Yeah, Matty watches a lot of fucking hockey. That's your other gig. And you're watching all the games last night on a giant screen like the Matrix and the Leafs are the best team on ice.
Starting point is 01:20:02 Is solid a word you would use for their 60-minute performance? Absolutely not. So I thought it would be interesting to bring up just that disconnect there between the narrative that I don't think they're truthfully giving to the audience because you don't want to come after that game and dump on your performance again because I think you're fueling more narratives that come out of Saturday. but it's also let's all read between the lines here and they don't want to add fuel to the fire in their words uh which if you want to disagree with their strategy there or agree with it it's whatever but it's just not very honest also side note what's that over there in the corner oh that's me are these guys like a crisis management team like disguised as a hockey team
Starting point is 01:20:52 what are you doing with the injury shit is so deeply weird it's so weird and then you come out and you're like it was great like listen everyone who cheers for you is happy you won i'm happy you won but i was thrilled lie to me why are you liars why is this a why can i now add to the list of things you are actively lying about lying but also telling the truth in other parts of when they talk because Dakota Joshua did say if I were in the crowd I'd be booing too yeah but Jesse this is important that's how you lie you don't ever just tell lies you tell lies and you sprinkle in a couple truths to give your lies credibility okay I'm about to run for US senate that's how it works yeah that and that's what the leafs are doing and i'm here to educate
Starting point is 01:21:53 you because apparently these guys think you're stupid the it's you need the truth to lie it's important right that's what they're doing with this i like i i tweeted something uh after first intermission i was like they could win this game five two it wouldn't change my opinion about this team like we're talking about like the x you said seven two afterwards i said seven two and i think by the time i hit record it was eight yeah he's bumping it up it would not change my opinion about this game yeah um like we talk about the x's nose we talk about them playing slow we talk about them not listening to their coach but adam nailed it the emotional intelligence to come out of the gate like that you are xanax on skates yeah joe bowen night
Starting point is 01:22:49 at home you just got embarrassed on hockey night in canada but your coach just called out your leadership group your gm did a pre-game speech no bedard or lev shunov the black hawks said please take these two points we're just not interested we're still in a rebuild we have these young guys i hope nick lardis scores but you take them you'll know what to do with them better than we will at this point and the leaf said for 50 minutes no i just i don't know that's i'm not feeling 100 on paper hockey's not that fun on paper Craig yells at me and I don't really like it's a five one and
Starting point is 01:23:34 two stretch that the Leafs are on yeah that's what it looks that's just what it looks like on paper and smart hockey fans aren't fooled by but if you look at just the home stretch that they've had since they've been back and they played that Montreal game it's three it's four ugly
Starting point is 01:23:50 games yes it's it's the homestand bring up the calendar there like on it looks like oh they've collected all these points they're playing really well one regulation loss but it's an ugly game against montreal that they should have got yeah it's the ugly sharks game it's the disaster oilers performance and then it's this game against the blackhawks that they pull out of their ass it's one win against tampa during this entire five game homestand that's
Starting point is 01:24:16 actually good yeah no i'm i'm dying for them to have a good three game road trip here before they shit themselves in front of my son steve i i know it'd be awesome i know that uh i know that you hate shakespeare but in mcbeth sure all right uh there is you know the you know the two little witches that come along yeah and they seduce mcbeth with two small truths only to betray him with a big lie later yes that's what this is yes and i i want i want people to clock that and i also want people to be like listen i know we're gonna get lit up by by homer lee fans which we are two uh who are gonna be like well why can't you just be positive i'm not gonna be blind to this guys i refuse sorry can you ask me a question hey what's your name steve okay what question you
Starting point is 01:25:04 want me to ask why why can't you just be positive why can't you just be positive steve um oh sorry to answer your question the last 45 minutes of this show anyway like why yeah sorry there are two too often i'm asking a question that's answered by the content and this is my this is my issue it's i listen in order for us to have a conversation you need to at least listen to the words i said i think i think what it is jess and steve and this is what i've been saying all year this team is more talented than this well no this team is better than this yeah and they're not playing to that level and somebody gave me shit in the comments about oh well you can't just say brube is not the right fit and they're more talented i'm like they're two separate things
Starting point is 01:25:48 brube is not the fit and they're more talented than this and in fact i know that brube is not the right fit because they're more talented than this yeah they won the division together last year and that was last year stop living in the past it's like it doesn't great coach and great fit does not always remain so what if craig brube is a top friggin 5 10 coach in the world and it just doesn't work here and he gets fired and he does well somewhere else and the leafs also get better for it we've seen that happen a thousand times i i hate when people act like it's their first day watching hockey i don't understand that now in terms of the stretch that the leafs are on which yeah if you just take a clump of games and you go well in their last
Starting point is 01:26:35 eight there what was it five one and two that's exactly what i said yeah yeah like and people are going to present that like it's information like no that's what the standings are for i could have just clicked on nhl.com and saw that if you bring up those games like it's the here put it put it on there you go it that this was the tail end of them playing hockey that made us say wait a sec are they back the panthers win was awesome the hurricanes win was even more awesome so they win those two games on the road to end the road trip by a combined score of nine two and we went hold the phone wait a minute here they lost to Montreal didn't love that but you're able to go you know what they're coming off that road trip they were really good on that road trip they still got a
Starting point is 01:27:25 point out of this maybe let's hold our horses a little bit they host Tampa they shut them out it's one nothing and you got an empty netter okay okay let's keep it pushing two days off and we all marked that sharks loss as a bad one they were up to nothing and we're like here we go they shit the bed and it was so bad that it was difficult to look at like well they got a point you're like oh boy but they really should have had to the game against edmonton was horror awful and now here you are uh with an outlier game you can't do this all the time like how many times a season do you get the pittsburgh game where you were down three nothing and come back which apparently you're not even special they just do that to everyone and you get this game
Starting point is 01:28:27 against chicago it doesn't come along very often like this isn't a business model no you know what i mean so i i have a hard time just looking at that clump of games and well look at their record it's good that they're finding ways to get points even in games where they play shitty but as long as we all acknowledge they're playing shitty and also why are we taking a victory lap they're still not in a playoff spot yep so now they're gonna play washington on the road on thursday uh and that's going to be a real test because uh washington's very good um joseph wall is back uh he looked okay uh and he will paper over if he's as good as he was before the tweak a lot of these issues the question will be and we have no answer for you right now
Starting point is 01:29:18 how do they move forward from this how do they how do they how do they finish december because i think it's going to dictate how they handle the trade deadline i really do i mean the roster freezes on friday guys so nothing's going to happen before that friday at 11 59 this is a tough back-to-back coming up too yep like washington is always a hard out you get nashville who's actually been shit hot and the second half of the back-to-back you get dallas in dallas rough that's not a great pull you don't want to be playing dallas on the second half of back-to-back so it's it's gonna be hard to get uh these six points here uh so christmas eve is seven days today you should hurry yeah jenny bird jenny bird is your one-stop shop okay here's the thing

Starting point is 01:32:05 uh yarmo kekalainen when he was brought in we were all like ah there's kevin adams replacement right there and shock of the century i believe like it's so funny that it leaked over the weekend and i think the reason it leaked over the weekend is that people were leaking it over the weekend yeah uh sabers are like really poorly run the leakiest ship ever well they were supposed to make it a little earlier yeah unfortunately your most dad dad uh passed away so they couldn't make it right away so i think a large majority of it was there was supposed to be at that time when things were leaking so that's why it got leaked now i think i think the lesson learned there from an organization is don't leak.
Starting point is 01:32:43 I don't think that lesson's learned. But I do think that Jarmo Kekalainen, if you go back and you watch, and we're not going to play a billion clips from his press conference, but he spoke for 20 minutes. Good. And I like some of his quotes.
Starting point is 01:32:55 I'm going to read them out to you. I think character is the biggest part of talent and that that's the talent we need to focus on. There have been games this year where we looked like it was going to be easy and then we lost because we got outworked. That's unacceptable. That's going to be something that we focus on
Starting point is 01:33:10 each and every day because uh the talent the skill alone is not going to get you wins um he goes on to say that um every fan has the right to be frustrated imagine that acknowledging the fans uh and we have some really good core pieces here which they do he says we're close which is up for debate uh he's like but now we got to take the next step which they do and um what i think is really interesting is he makes no excuse makes no excuses for buffalo being situated where it is doesn't talk about um palm trees palm trees talks about winning culture talks about building a program that people want to be a part of i'm not sure if anybody will remember this but in the pre connor mcdavid days in the long long ago nobody wanted to sign in edmonton nobody no you know why
Starting point is 01:33:59 they want to sign in edmonton now because connor mcdavid and leon drysaddle are there if you have a winning culture people will want to sign there do you think jack roslevic regrets not signing at edmonton sooner i think he would have made more money he would have made more money and would have more points yeah he could put towards making more money next season yeah and the other thing that i thought was very very interesting is he did not commit to lindy ruff as a coach and uh he has full authority in overseeing the hockey department and pagula's approval to spend to the salary cap limit that i think would have been the only way that yarmulke line would have even accepted this job now let me give you some stats guys i told you last episode that the sabres have only hired
Starting point is 01:34:47 three general managers in their history with previous experience since pagula bought the sabres in february 2011 they've had five general managers eight head coaches including two lindy rough 10 years 28 goalies with at least a game jeez seven captains seven captains two first overall picks and zero uh playoff appearances that's from puck report nhl i don't know if the leafs have had seven captains since i was born i don't think they have holy you don't always have to name a captain that's a lot of cap a lot of captains holy cow yarmo for as much as i am very critical personally of the moves he made in columbus he takes swings um you know i i think that i think that yarmo was given too much leash in columbus which concerns me about the sabers
Starting point is 01:35:36 this is a guy that tried to convert patrick linea to center but this is also a guy that was able to turn um uh uh ryan johansson into seth jones he was able to or no was it seth jones no who did he trade him to he did get artemi panarin from brandon sod he yeah he got panarin he listen he got bob he got bob then lost bob and bob lost him a coach along the way poor todd richards may he rest yeah and i think what buffalo needs is somebody who's bold bold and i think he's good for the market because sometimes a guy gets hired and i look at the fit and i'm like oh that's not going to be like your last job at all and you know don't take this the wrong way columbus and buffalo have a lot in common and i'm not talking about uh the losing uh which they have in common
Starting point is 01:36:31 yeah uh climate is definitely they have that in common but like they're small market teams they are um the difference was columbus had an owner who was probably not involved enough and buffalo has an owner who might be involved too much being able to spend to the cap i think is a really big deal um and also i'm gonna stick to what i said when the sabers hired yarmo because you were like well what the hell has he ever done which is a very valid question and the answer is nothing by the way but he's an actual nhl general manager and not a neighbor that was given the title after running a youth hockey organization not
Starting point is 01:37:15 everyone who is good at one thing it was so after we talked about last episode briefly it's the Harbor Center that's Pagula's multi-use hockey and hotel facility and running the Academy of Hockey and Junior Sabres that's what Kevin
Starting point is 01:37:31 Adams did before running the Buffalo like what are we doing it's an honest joke that's on Terry that's on yes oh But you put Adams in that position wrongly. Now, I think for Sabres fans, the thing that probably is weighing on them the most right now is Alex Tuck. Now, a lot of Sabres fans have have suggested that Kevin Adams recently leaked that Alex Tuck needs over 10 million dollars, especially in the wake of Adrian Kempe. uh kevin adams didn't leak that uh from what we understand um uh adrian oh sorry not adrian kepe alex tucks people are like he's going to make more than 10 million and they'll tell anybody
Starting point is 01:38:13 that listens and you know what good for them they're right i mean they are like in spirit like they ought to be doing that yeah that's their job good for them and also there's there's multiple reasons for doing that by the way number one is you aim to get your number yeah you set a market number two if they sign for less than that number what a good guy he must really love it here alex tuck took 9.99 what a guy now we should have said that with marner he could have taken 14 in columbus but he took 11 in toronto we should have been nicer about it yeah why didn't we feel that way oh his shithead agent oh i forgot about his shit agent who's a shithead so i forgot about that i believe that today we wake up with a healthier buffalo sabers organization than we
Starting point is 01:38:59 have seen in the last five years jesse blake what say you what's the question do you think the buffalo sabers are healthier today than they have been in the last five years yes because kevin adams is no longer there is that and that's all it takes really kevin adams when he got the job terry pagula did not interview any other candidates kevin adams had no experience as a general manager He was not equipped to ever do that job. And he also went into that job, fired everyone, and then never hired any help to help him out to do this job that he was not equipped for. Him not being there is an incredible thing for this organization. And this is the first time that they have had somebody with a legitimate resume to run their team.
Starting point is 01:39:48 That is a step up in every single direction for the Buffalo Sabres. Since like Darcy Regier. I'm happy for them. This is the first time Terry's hired somebody who's not a first-time general manager. And I think... This is a step, even if it's a baby step, it's a step in the right direction for the Sabres.
Starting point is 01:40:04 He's going to bring in his own head coach. Like Lindy, no disrespect, Lindy had his day. His day's over. Yes. You know, he had great years in Buffalo. Amazing years. It helps. Like any head coach is going to be great
Starting point is 01:40:17 when your goalie's Dominic Hasek. Like that helps. oh and then we're going to follow that with ryan miller man like amazing you look at the team in front of hashek and you and you go how the hell did they win and then you look at hashek and you go oh okay yeah like mike pecka who i love played for the leafs as well was incredible as a defensive center but he was like their leading score oh everyone's like coming over the boards sergey federoff pavel bore buray joe sakic jerome mcginla and here's brian holzinger and the one with holzinger one maxima finnegan of tim connelly maxim off and knocking off man crazy and and then
Starting point is 01:40:58 you know and and listen lindy had a couple of i think he had some good years but i can't remember his dallas tenure that much because he was dallas i just remember the new jersey thing and then and they said fire lindy in new jersey and then they said sorry and then they said fire and then it was fire lindy again yeah yeah um new jersey's a tough town i don't know what the purpose of bringing him back to buffalo was i don't um but you know he was the coach of columbus for so long that like i like going back and i did this with true living when the leafs hired him i like going back and looking at uh what gms does this guy have a tendency of making the most moves with you know this is just by eyeball so like i haven't actually gone through and calculated and
Starting point is 01:41:44 maybe i will um man yarmulke wield and dealed with everybody absolutely everyone calls people is in on every big stud player that hits the market he doesn't sit on his hands and they've got capital they've got oh my god like the sabers in terms of assets are in a really good spot like i kind of you know he talks about what what did he say where was exact words like we're close he said we're close those were the exact words i think that's a pretty optimistic outlook but like the there is talent i don't disagree in that this isn't a tear down situation no not at all do a bunch that kevin adams did it's about building it up which is they've never had that ability to do over this course of 14 years not making the playoffs every time they've tried to build up
Starting point is 01:42:35 they failed and then traded all the guys who go on to win the stanley cups yep it's now about just adding the pieces to make this team a playoff team and that's the bar here oh yeah we're asking you just get in you could do that this season like it's i mean probably not probably not it's like the the atlantic's weak enough that it's not totally on no you're not out of it right now like the season's not lost but you can see where it's trending right now yeah under the old regime but like we're asking for 95 points next year we're asking for 99 points to get into that playoff bar that wild card seed and you just need to add the right pieces keep the guys around you need to keep around i think they need to sign alex tuck i think he's a very important player to that
Starting point is 01:43:16 team in that community and being a buffalo saber and then figure out like have your solid goaltending done you know and don't have 82 bow by rooms on your back end you know have somebody who's solid at playing defense along with uh doleen so there's just like if yarmulke line can just fill in the blank blank spaces there on the sabers easily a playoff team next year your core is tuck thompson uh power and dolly yeah that's pretty great all right it's like there's a solid foundation yeah there really really is and we keep waiting for this step and it doesn't come they don't even draft poorly really no they always pick the guys and then send them everywhere yeah this has been the problem i think since 2020 i don't think anybody outside of the first
Starting point is 01:44:02 rounds played for them oh i think they could hire some scouts and i think that's that yeah you know they they fired that's that's the one thing like buffalo for whatever reason has escaped what we used to give the senator shit for the senators fucking fired everybody was like who works for these guys right uh buffalo's the same they like they like fired a lot of people and again you're getting a guy who worked with the blue jackets i don't think he's asking for much you know what i mean hey man i don't need a ton for this operation to be a success here's what i need give me this it'll cost you this much wham yeah you're talking about draft picks there and like building up the one person who'd be great on this team is a second round pick from 2020
Starting point is 01:44:48 and jj paturka it'd be awesome if you had that player you know why isn't he there i wonder i was was he bad no he was great no the team was fucking horrible they do have josh stone he's looked good uh but i because of jj peter they did well but i very well i want to say guys that so rings been hurt part of me wonders if jj peterka is still there if they had moved on from kevin adams earlier possibly yeah they've got the assets to turn this around quickly they've got cap space um they can do this and it's a question of terry pagula being able to get out of terry pagula's way now it's now tear it's it's on you pal you happy that he was at practice today yeah him and his daughter i think or i'm not sure yeah i think they were at they were at practice
Starting point is 01:45:40 whatever man show face um the problem with terry pagula is whenever he shows up he delivers a message that falls completely flat like i don't know if you guys remember last year terry pagula went into the dressing room was like his fire up speech was the answers in the room we're not doing anything for you oh cool man wow terror more like terrorists down i'm gonna remember more like terrorist uh to a team morale god damn um i just yeah please trade me to utah yeah yeah and you know it doesn't help like it's gotten to the point where like players are getting photographed at a bar after a game oh that was pathetic and people are like see these guys aren't committed like now that's that's a dummy like i don't think that's any but that's where it's at with the fans
Starting point is 01:46:30 is my point now that's that's an idiot fan he could exist yeah but do you see that anywhere else i don't think that's an indictment on the team i think that's an indictment on one i think it's i think it is i think it is a it's a symptom of and you can look at sabers twitter and go like they were raising ai banners of we fired kevin adams like they're so that's the right they're so done they're so done i think they're so done with kevin adams but i don't know that that one thing that's a moron shit he was stupid to do you should have done it i don't put that on sabers fans uh okay no i won't i'm not putting it on sabers i'm saying it's a symptom of the fact that sabers fans are pissed that's completely different i disagree with that no most sabers
Starting point is 01:47:08 oh no sabers fans are thrilled jess most sabers fans that i saw were like listen the team shit but that's stupid yeah but do you think if the sabers are winning that person does that that's my point i i do i think that person is an idiot i think dumb is dumb in every dumbness yeah all right bar bars not a bar dumbness that's the title of the show uh make a t-shirt i'm i'm interested to see what happens with alex tuck because if he can't like if they're not willing to go to that number if they can't work this out they have to trade him yeah and like i don't know i kind of think you can take or leave them a little bit um you could do well on a trade like that you're the sabers are versatile if if that makes any sense i think you could go in a lot of different
Starting point is 01:47:55 directions with the group that they have except for full teardown you don't do that you can go in a lot of different directions and have it end up being the right decision yeah like if there's a package out there like the one that the canucks got for hughes for talk i mean you freaking take it there probably isn't but yeah you could find a desperate general managers are looking for top six health toronto yeah you understand you understand what i'm saying yeah yeah now we have to move quick because we are running out of time on this episode sure uh i want to move quickly to new jersey uh jersey fans are so mad at mr fitzgerald because everybody on that team has a no-move or a no-trade clause.
Starting point is 01:48:36 And the problem is that Vancouver would have wanted a package, according to reports, of 20-year-old defenseman Simon Nemech, because he's awesome, a 24-year-old center Dawson Mercer, KHL defenseman Anton Saleev, who was drafted 10th overall in 2024
Starting point is 01:48:53 in a first-round pick, which would have been a worse outcome than what they got from Minnesota. But the Devils were not able to do it, and specifically two player names are coming up andre palat who you guys know i love even though he's you know his career is on the downslope now love the memory of him and dougie hamilton if they've been able to clear that which they couldn't and i think perhaps and and what's being put forward is the devils did not think that this was going to be available this quickly
Starting point is 01:49:21 well then you weren't prepared yeah remember they didn't have luke hughes signed coming into the season so they had Dougie Hamilton as the stopgap to that and if they traded Dougie Hamilton then Luke Hughes's price goes up and a really underrated part of all of this is what devil's player is happy right now is Nemech nope I mean he didn't end up getting traded so I bet he's happy about that but he also knows you tried is Dawson Mercer again he didn't get traded but he knows you tried how about palat who negotiated with you specifically to get a no move same with dougie hamilton same for like this is bad not only did you not get the guy so your fans are you didn't get the guy but everyone whose name is pretty nakedly out there from good insiders
Starting point is 01:50:16 wasn't it lebron i don't know this doesn't matter you're all these names are out there probably was lebron and no one's feeling good about it it's funny that in when it comes to the quinn hughes trade the markets that that's the most pissed off is new jersey like right fans they're thrilled they're every one of those guys has scored dude the first round pick's gonna score next game probably yeah liam olgren got his goal yeah uh obviously zeev bulliams scored and so did marco rossi it's amazing yeah that's funny that the first round pick might score yeah i thought it was a good line that was a good line adam got a step on it no i did not stop i laughed at it It's okay.

Starting point is 01:52:00 Now, the last thing I want to get to that we have to get to, a couple of things in Seattle. First off, you already know that former Seattle Kraken, Morgan Geeky, has more goals than the entire team or within the top score has points okay it's pretty bad uh dave hackstall who was the first of three coaches in four and a half years that the kraken have existed uh got a tribute last night i don't know if you saw that he got a video tribute who's he even with right i have no idea i don't even know the play i intentionally didn't look that up because i was like oh man i don't even know that's hilarious uh and i have no idea the tribute for hackstall yeah yeah because he was their first head coach in franchise history yeah so he came back with the avalanche
Starting point is 01:52:40 yeah because avalanche oh the kraken were winning that game and then the avalanche came back as they always do in one yeah and lane lambert's press conference last night we don't have to play it because it's super boring but what i think is hilarious about it i kind of want to play it do you want to play it i will send it to you jesse he's being i've got it because this is bad the the crux what we're about to discuss is how he's being a dick we should show him being a dick okay like he's being a dick so i'm not gonna tell you then what's gonna happen i'm gonna let you listen and then i'm gonna tell you what happened i want you to pay it's only a minute to the number of voices you hear lane um overall what do you think your group tonight and also the right line
Starting point is 01:53:22 and how they played well we played hard uh like we have been um you just can't find a way to get over the finish line and what about the right line itself did you feel good about what they were doing tonight yeah I thought they played well in special teams you guys had some good work there anything in particular that stood out to you I thought we killed fine made a big mistake at the end of the last kill can't make that power play scored for us you know aside from the goal we gave up which was a critical situation, critical error.
Starting point is 01:54:02 They were fine, but again, not good enough. Didn't get the job done. And how about Philip Grubauer's night? Played well. Any update on Montour? No.
Starting point is 01:54:15 Okay. Thanks, Coach. Thank you. So Montour, thanks for what? Left injured. Montour was their big free agent signing a year and a half ago.
Starting point is 01:54:23 He's had a very good season. What are we supposed to notice, Steve and Jesse, about who's talking? one guy asked him questions and it turns out because people were like wait a second was it that only one guy was there right because you you don't see the reporters in the video right and that would seem odd for a market like seattle but we have seen that like you know there are teams that don't have i mean they made a big deal of it in vegas oh martyr's not gonna have to
Starting point is 01:54:50 answer a question after game 32 that's nice yeah um maybe lane lambert doesn't either because that guy that was asking the question is actually the guy who is the seattle reporter who works for them for nhl.com yeah nhl.com but works for the seattle part of it right right right um employed by the team the team pays that bill yeah uh nobody at the press conference and there were multiple reporters there were allowed to ask a question and this allowed a lot not allowed to talk and what's amazing about it is the seattle pr team this morning apologized for it but it was lane lambert and their decision to do that how about you apologize with your wallet how about you apologize with your wallet how would you apologize with your wallet by getting
Starting point is 01:55:33 fined like what's i i always does anyone work at the nhl does anyone work anywhere does anyone have a job what is he has to talk after the game he has to take questions after the game that's part of the job like it's negotiated and paid it's paid for by the way you ever see all these freaking stories about like uh you know oh this rights deal and that's right yeah that's baked into the pie is people pay for this and the average nhl coach makes like two and a half million dollars more than that yeah like i don't know i just you make coin dude you make great money can you give us like 120 seconds of civility every two or three days and he couldn't do that and it wasn't lane lambert as far as i can tell going no questions from anyone other than this one guy it was the
Starting point is 01:56:34 team going no we're only taking questions from this one person from what we've heard lane was involved in that okay i don't care if he was or if it was the pr team the pr team and lane work for the same organization that's the seattle crack as is the reporter and they broke the rules last night no one does anyone work does anyone work could he have done the marshawn lynch i'm just here so i don't get fined because they actually find you in the nfl you know what marshawn lynch did during that exchange that lane lambert didn't took questions from multiple reporters marshawn lynch in one of the most famous pants shitting incidents ever recorded in front of media shit his pants less than lane lambert did after a regular season game in december against
Starting point is 01:57:19 colorado jesse you deal regularly with leafs pr right that's part of the gig great people um and you know they have their way of doing things and we can be critical of it but they have their way yeah if the leafs pr told the press group here that only i don't even know who works for nhl.com for the leafs who is it dave mccarthy dave mccarthy oh of course it's dave mccarthy so if dave mccarthy only dave mccarthy gets questions tonight how do you think that wouldn't happen how do you think that goes over jess for the leafs like you're laughing it's for the leafs equivalent it'd be like ryan leslie only getting questions it wouldn't happen because they're professionals and they know how this thing works and they're not doing amateur hour like they are
Starting point is 01:57:58 out in seattle that's a that's a joke that's ridiculous it makes the team and it no it just makes the team look shitty yeah oh yeah like there's no way to spin it this is it's not it's one it's definitely against some sort of rules yes you can't censor the press which is what they're doing there this feels something uh beyond nhl this feels trumpian having specific people in the room only ask questions which is crazy there's a lot of people line testing right now it's a They're seeing what they can get away with. It's a joke that they would do this. And I assume it comes down to lame Lambert making that decision.
Starting point is 01:58:38 I don't know how much I would put this on the PR staff. They're following orders. They're not the ones being like, ah, we lost 5-3 and we should have held on to that lead to the avalanche. Let's limit questions. This is coming from the man. Yeah, at the end of the day, they're not going to stand for it. No, no, no, wait, wait, wait. Block his entry to the back.
Starting point is 01:58:58 I don't need an apology from Kraken PR. I want an apology from Lane Lambert. That's who I'm putting. Apologize with your wallet. Can I ask a question? What kind of organization is Ron Francis running over there? They fucked up the expansion draft. They fucked it up.
Starting point is 01:59:16 They signed a bunch of slow defensemen. They've made the playoffs once. They've been through three coaches in four and a half years. People really ought to be asking more questions. What kind of organization is Ron Francis running? I don't know. What are we talking about? what do you if i was president of the team the way he is i would be apoplectic finding that out
Starting point is 01:59:38 i would be down the hall and saying to the entire press corps you guys just wait here i'll go get him this is the president you're talking well it's ron is it not oh he's president gm is he not i understand what you're saying i'd be like no hang on i'll go get lane and he's going to get back in here and answer your questions what kind of organization you can't take the seattle kraken seriously you can't you can't you cannot the way the roster is constructed they can't fucking score they never could score their draft picks benears and right they can't get shane right to shoot they can't get shane right to shoot a puck they can't get maddie benears a goal like that this is a team i'm i'm genuinely asking if if kevin adams got as this much shit
Starting point is 02:00:28 in buffalo and i understand buffalo's a far more mature hockey market than seattle doesn't mean that seattle fans aren't educated it just means buffalo's market goes back 50 years yeah they've been around longer if if ron francis had pulled this shit in buffalo people would be going what the fuck even in carolina no one's talking about it right why how many years did the seattle kraken get a pass yeah i get that you're the new guy it's a half decade now and you guys look like shit and there there are um some teams get a pass because things are going well what's the conversation around vegas right now they're winning they're winning like everything else no matter how serious it is they're winning people go yes but also they're winning right um
Starting point is 02:01:21 and they've done shitty things with the media in recent memory too yep and then they went yeah okay but the winning look at all the winning look at the hey we're winning and seattle doesn't have the luxury of being like well yeah but check out hey rocking results we made the second round a couple years ago yeah shut up yeah hell yeah nope their things are not going well and also they're treating people like it's time for a change i don't think this is this is not i mean ron francis you've had your time is it's objectively making movies or what well ask jerry brockheimer jeff bezos who never else owns the team right like i don't know but it's time this is not this is not the guy and that is not a serious organization deeply unserious people do what lane lambert did
Starting point is 02:02:06 last night yeah the you know we we began this and i love lane by the way i thought he was great in oh the leafs sorely miss him but like you you see what we started the show with where jesse brought up the nba injury reports and you're like man that's a league and the nhl is just not so the the standard to look like a professional organization in the nhl is just lower objectively than it is in other sports leagues on this continent it's just the truth and seattle is not even meeting that low bar and that should be concerning for any seattle kraken fan and anyone who is interested in the long-term health of this league and it makes me you know there's a lot of talk about expansion with the nhl and to me there's a little bit of
Starting point is 02:03:04 could and should here now at the end of the day two billion dollars wins any argument should we do this well i don't know if we have the bandwidth we're already a super podunk just unprofessional organization that is masquerading as anything professional and we're super not but two billion smackaroons you know what i think i'll take the two billion smackaroons that's not even a thing people say smackaroons um but we're making it that's the show title is smackaroons smackaroons smackaroons smackaroons you already have a the nhl already has a like a serious people problem and uh credibility problem and professionalism problem and i don't think more teams is going to make it better but how about this we can handle 32 teams
Starting point is 02:04:06 the kraken are not operating like they should be one of them i'm not saying fold of the kraken i'm saying there needs to be a change i think a lot of this hangs on one dude having a really bad day in lane lambert and not acting appropriately in that circumstance like i get your one eight and one and you're terrible right now in your last 10 and you're falling out of the playoff spot and everything's not good but you can't act like that we all have bad days does it not speak to jesse organizational lack of standards yeah yeah like the thing to think good he could get away from that yeah i think um like he better he better have faced some consequences behind and seen from people who pay his paycheck.
Starting point is 02:04:51 There was a good article by Glenn Dreyfuss who writes about the Kraken. Glenn is a question asker after the games, like covers the team. So a unique perspective. Well, sometimes. Somebody who's, sometimes, yeah. When they allow him to ask questions,
Starting point is 02:05:07 he is a question asker. So I thought he did a good job summarizing this because Glenn wasn't so much complaining about the lack of the ability to ask questions by the other media members. He took that a step further and asked about like, hey, this is a bad message to the rest of your team. He said, conversely, the wrong vibe, even unwittingly communicated by the coach can, in extreme cases, cause players to tune out and or reduce effort levels. Because if the coach has lost faith in us, why bother?
Starting point is 02:05:40 We don't know if Lambert was equally downcast with cracking players behind closed doors. We didn't get a chance to ask him. i thought i thought that was uh that was a bar there and he did give him the um the leverage to have a bad day you know we all have bad days it's just this can't be what you're doing here lane lambert it's a good little read on on the mess that happened last night he also shouted out the kraken reporter that was bob condor who's the editor-in-chief of the kraken website who was wrongly tasked with asking all the questions last night i i hate the position you put bob into as well yeah that's gone unnoticed i think in this whole thing you gave bob the mic because in seattle
Starting point is 02:06:25 they don't do the scrum like how we do in toronto during the regular season the playoffs we do it this way where the pr staff goes around gives the mic to the person who's allowed to ask the next question they do that during the regular season so they hand bob the mic and they don't give it to anybody else in the room and bob has to sit there and ask these questions a whole bunch of time we heard it where lane's giving him these one-word answers that's just awkward for him your employee right that's your co-worker yeah bob is because you guys are employed by the same people and yeah but is he the head coach uh so that that's that's the vibe yes and that's the vibe that's the attitude that the guy who's supposed to be the leader for the players
Starting point is 02:07:05 is putting on a messaging to the media and to the fans yeah that's brutal that's a brutal message awful look and the bad day thing it's like okay it better have been just your worst day because overall this whole sequence of that minute is awful you and i'm not gonna forget it no this is what i'm gonna think about when i think about lane lambert for the next bit i've done nothing but glaze lane lambert for like a year and a half on the show so like i we never really got to see the side of them because how often are you like we the assistant coach needs to stand up in front of the media they never do that yeah it just doesn't really happen right um no in the adult grown-up world uh i think the minimum is you apologize and you are lucky when all you are
Starting point is 02:07:52 expected to do is apologize but i think in this case you apologize and you also have to deal with the consequences and if there aren't consequences you're not a serious organization and now i'm no longer looking at the seattle crack and i'm looking at the nhl there are there's an there's a pyramid man this this is how this works there's the league there are the teams there are the and it spreads out like that is anyone at the wheel anywhere like i certainly think there are you're like ron it's ron this is ron where's ron and if ron's not gonna do anything hey gare anyone that's where you expect a guy like
Starting point is 02:08:37 Frank Cervalli who's the head of the PWH professional hockey writers association I never can get the acronym correct PWHPA which was the professional women's hockey association and then there was the professional writers there's also the pro hockey
Starting point is 02:08:53 players association oh for god's sakes if I'm Ron Francis and I see my head coach do this I have a lot of questions as to why the guy i put in charge of this team is being a pantshitting baby in front of everybody yeah like don't do that what are you doing well and you were mad you know what something that that steve brought up when lane lambert was hired here because i was like oh friggin hell they're bringing in lane lambert uh he's like actually he's great on defense not everybody's meant to
Starting point is 02:09:18 be a head coach his assistant coach not everybody is meant to be a head coach let me say it again for the people in the back not everybody's meant to be a head coach and when you act like that you prove the point not every assistant coach is a head coach not every head coach is an assistant coach lane lambert's nhl resume as an assistant coach sterling it's really really good one of the best ways your organization could spend money is to hire him to run your pk and defense and i will fight you to the death that's just truth as far as head coach yeah no that's arson that's lighting money on fire well at least under ron francis's leadership at least until i'm see otherwise so we'll see what happens going forward but they're you know this is a new enough
Starting point is 02:10:08 organization that season ticket holders could just walk right this is why like what are the honestly jesse just gave us the record one eight and one yeah what's worth watching we're complaining about the leafs and they're seven three and three in their last 13 oh yeah oh yeah i mean and we're bitching about that yeah of course 181 can you imagine what would happen imagine standards imagine well and like listen he might get fired by the by the time this shows out right like with a record like that we we don't know and maybe that's why he's in a bad mood doesn't matter like you explaining your bad mood and you justifying your bad mood and having that justification be fair does not mean you can
Starting point is 02:10:50 treat me like an asshole and that's what he did in that room that night yep so we're gonna leave it there when was the last time the Kraken won in regulation if you say the Leafs I'm gonna kick your ass no that would be funny no they did the Leafs beat them no they very did not
Starting point is 02:11:06 um last time they won in regulation November 22nd Adam I don't know when they played so I'm just gonna say i'm gonna say november 15th just to beat steve by november 20th wow we are we are one two games away from a month without a regulation win they got calgary on thursday
Starting point is 02:11:32 and then san jose on saturday which is the 20th of december so if they lose the next two or if they don't win the next two in regulation that'll be four straight weeks without a regulation win in Seattle. Calgary's a must win because San Jose's really good. They're hot. They better get that game
Starting point is 02:11:48 against Calgary on Thursday. Dustin Wolf will come. Yo, Dustin Wolf, man. Stand on your head, please. I want to see this. This is cinema flame. Tough sledding. Yeah.
