When I ask you about hockey's greatest duos, who do you think about?
Steve Dangle and Jesse Blake.
100%.
But my mind immediately went to, that's a very good answer.
I think of Kompf and McMahon.
Oh, there you go.
Strong.
I was thinking more like Orespozito or Gretzky Curry or Lemieux-Yager.
Orrin McLaren.
Orrin McLaren.
Oh, I got one.
Logan Cooley and Dylan Genther.
There you go.
Utah's greatest hope.
Hockey's greatest duos have arrived at Tim Hortons,
and it's unlike anything you've ever seen.
This month, each card features two players,
including NHL legends, retired stars, women superstars,
and they're all interconnected in special ways
that include former teammates, captains, friendships,
and numbers that they've worn.
Some notable duos include none of the people
that Jesse or Steve mentioned.
Nick Suzuki and Marty St. Louis.
Matthew and Brady Kachuk.
Brady and Keith Kachuk.
Matthew and Keith Kachuk.
Darnell and Sarah Nurse.
Sidney Crosby and Nathan McKinnon.
Teammates, rivals, family, and more.
There are two hockey icons in every card.
And rivals and teammates and family and all that stuff.
It's all in there with the new Tim's greatest duo cards.
This is kind of our favorite time of year anyway
because we always used to just get the Tim Hortons cards and open them.
Now you get two cards or two people on a card instead of just two cards.
I'm glad Sidney Crosby and Nathan McKinnon finally got involved with Tim Hortons.
Yeah, isn't it nice?
It feels like a good match.
Yeah, it does.
I hope that the future is bright for them.
There's so much they could do.
So much.
All right, so check it out at your local Tim Hortons starting today, April 15th.
Let's start the show.
with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake well it is sunny and beautiful outside in
toronto and it's starting to feel like that time yeah that time where you're starting to feel like
oh i'm watching the game and the sun is out allergy time is that how you look at it yeah no
I look at it as playoff time.
I look at it as wife keeps asking me what the schedule is,
and I keep telling her I don't know.
Right, because they won't tell you until the end of the week.
Yeah.
Even though they know.
No, they don't know who's playing each other.
Yeah.
They don't know.
Oh, it's no one's fault.
I mean, the Saturday part is the NHL's fault.
That is directly their fault.
You could at least say there are games on Saturday, right?
Couldn't you?
That's.
Couldn't you at least say there are games?
That's the only thing they've said.
Yeah, we know the start date is the 20th.
they have said that yes if you i'm confused at what you're asking i'm asking i'm asking for i'm
asking for clarity all right some of us have families all right what if they just rigged it
and told us just rig it i mean it's probably it's all scripted anyway it's like professional
wrestling yeah exactly cody rhodes yeah i don't know what that means the story finished the story
austin he won the he won the championship of wrestlemania he did i watched it you paid for
i paid for it because i wrestlemania was going on and i knew i was going to spend about two three
hours trapped under a baby so i literally just watched wrestlemania under the weight of a baby
saturday and sunday just just sunday i wish i saw saturday but no saturday i uh uh beliefs i don't
remember yeah probably the leaves yeah that's yeah there you go oh yeah i was doing my job
yeah hey uh jesse i just sent you a text if we can bring this up on the screen i just think
you know in the spirit of the season and this is a very exciting season if you're going to the
playoffs if you're not it's less exciting um far draft lottery draft lottery is exciting yeah we're
gonna get that real soon which is exciting we love that and i'm just pulling up the the wild
card standings as jesse pulls up this picture because they are already setting up at maple
leaf square big shout out to at leafs please win uh no no no no adam what this could be for the
raptors too uh no hey don't be mean man bad uh they're bad right now um now i want to say this
uh we got the whole thing sorted out in the western conference officially the golden knights
have clinched uh or clenched uh they made it close though no i don't think they're clenched
uh they're less clinched they are less clenched we have one playoff series that we can definitively
say is going to happen which is the jets and abs and the jets have been on it the jets have been
on a tear lately the abs not so much i don't know what's going on there three five and two in the
last 10 yeah i really don't know what's going on there and like blowing it blowing it you're
giving it away seven nothing loss uh they blew a three nothing lead yesterday just a tough look
all around if we're being honest i think we got uh what is it three three serieses that's the only
one that's locked it's the only one that's official official but i think we're like 97
see what i did hey oilers kings yeah once again baby let's go what's that three in a row three
times in a row in the first round because the way the nhl does the standings is ass
we get it three times in a row and it doesn't make me any more excited about it i'm just like
that's just you're just it's just like forcing two dance partners on each other it's not like
like i don't see like there being this huge rivalry between la and edmonton i think that
they don't like playing each other but the rivalry for me was like when drew dowdy and
matthew kachuk used to get into it that was a rivalry they've got a bit of a rivalry like the
leafs and the bruins have a rivalry yes one keeps winning yeah that's so it's less exciting what is
it different this year that's the question the bruins with a win tonight i believe could lock
up leafs panthers they can and i would say that dallas yes now dallas uh vegas is pretty close
that's that's the other one i was going to when i think we got three series that are like 90
there it's it's dallas uh dallas golden night if nashville loses their last game and vegas wins
their last two games uh then that's the only way that that would change but yeah nashville just
needs to get a point in their game and vegas needs to not go two for two so we'll see i'm looking at
everybody well sorry one second everyone was too busy being outraged about mark stone that they
forgot to be outraged about talmash hurdle oh yeah another guy who was injured and is coming back
right before the playoff just in time to score an ot winner um i want to say this too guys i think
if i were the edmonton oilers i'd be pissed because they've still only played 79 games
and they have three more to go this week and that kind of sucks i think uh sorry uh so you got the
sharks tonight uh the utah coyotes on wednesday and then the colorado avalanche thursday which
no star is playing but it looks like they're not going to start the playoffs until next monday oh
that's good so they're gonna have time off okay yeah okay i don't think i think by the time all
the playoffs shake out there's gonna be a lot of rest for these western conference teams because
you still start on saturday west will start sunday and monday yeah okay i like that i just
for that i feel like we're sitting here waiting for stupid news to come out and then once the
schedule that uh is released then we can go in and be like why are these two random series starting
on saturday we have we've already a source has told us a rumor and uh what's the source and
what's the rumor mad about it uh cj and when the series are starting and i don't think i should
have said that well there was um i think uh somebody from the edmonton media was tweeting
it out today too so it's not like that closely guarded you can deduce from when people play to
when the playoffs start when the teams are going to start you know like i know i know i know they
release them all on the same night but like avs jets why don't we just know that we should just
know that just release it yeah just release it there's also like there's concerts involved like
the oilers got a concert on the 20th on saturday so it'd be impossible for them to play anyways and
yeah you know they wouldn't start on sunday it doesn't look like so it's
just release it yeah just let us know i think that you gotta wait till it's official like we
We don't even know that that matchup is 100%,
and we're like 90%.
No, that's why I said Avs Jets.
Just let us know.
I also think you need to say that,
I get it from the NHL's perspective,
it's like one press release is better than 17.
Yeah.
And also, Avs Jets isn't even set who has home ice.
Oh, you didn't say that.
You should have looked at the standings.
No, I do a show with two friends
who have better vision and laptops.
they can they can still swap depending on how the their abs last game of the season goes i i want to
i want to throw this at you the other thing that i'm a little annoyed that they haven't announced
yet because this one seems like a no-brainer is the nhl draft lottery we don't actually have a
date for that and you're annoyed i'm annoyed with i knew you're a habs fan i know i'm annoyed
be able to plan for it like when when will it be i remember austin matthews won on my birthday
weekend which is just this past weekend or sorry the leafs won austin matthews uh when way back in
2016 i remember watching it and then going out to party because it was back when i used to do that
uh in 2016 and like celebrating that night my birthday and the fact that the leafs had the
first overall pick and they were likely going to select austin matthews and or maybe patrick
lining i was working wearing one of my two button-up shirts at sportsnet attaboy and when
they won i screamed and ran around the office and damien cox looked up from his desk and harumphed
because that i don't know it was a bit loud for a work environment but everyone else seemed rather
pleased yeah well with how pleased i was i'm not surprised a uh career harumph harumph to you uh
jake uh jake jeff merrick uh wanted the jets to win just for a t-shirt um that would now that
sounds like a very Jeff Merrick thing yeah it would now be a collector's item um but uh it was
basically Austin Matthews was going to be the first overall pick he's from Arizona Winnipeg
gets the first overall pick so the shirt would be you take our team we take your children
oh yeah that's aggressive wow that is a really aggressive yeah I don't know I've never heard
about I don't know how many of those you'd sell yeah I mean I think the phrasing needs some
massaging yeah personally Adam to answer your question and move off of this t-shirt um why
the draft lottery Frank Cervalli was saying it's going to be either the 6th 7th or 8th
so there's May of later yeah um uh Daily Face I've actually posted the odds uh slack in for
macklin um i'm not sure i i subscribe that's what uh that's what they were saying but um
as of the as of april 14th which is yesterday here are the draft lottery odds
san jose sharks at 25.5 good odds blackhawks 13.5 ducks 11.5 blue jackets who had a great
attendance year um like outstanding attendance year in columbus for some reason some reason
And, yeah, that news came out this morning, 9.5% and Montreal at 8.5%.
Interestingly, there are two teams with a 500 points percentage or higher
that are in the lottery sweepstakes, and that would be New Jersey at even 500.
No.
It's a Bettman 500, by the way, because they're 38, 38, and 5.
Yeah.
And then the Buffalo Sabres, who are at a 5.06, 38, 37, and 6.
And they have 3.5% and 3% each.
Sorry, what?
no go ahead go no you go i was gonna say do we want to officially host the draft lottery right
now because tankathon.org has the draft lottery let's go let's go we can do the official results
okay i want to do we should do this once every show until they do it yeah okay all right all
right so you you get to be gary okay so walk up gary glenn gary batman pull the ping pong ball
I'm keeping this team here for 25 years.
Okay, go.
And I'll hit the lottery button.
Matty, if you want to bring this up.
All right.
Oh, there we go.
Too early.
Let me put on my glasses.
Reset.
There we go.
Reset.
All right.
Sim.
Eight.
Go.
San Jose.
Whoa, but we have big movement.
The New Jersey Devils move up to two.
Wow, can you imagine?
And the Chicago Blackhawks with the third overall pick,
Ducks fourth, Blue Jackets fifth,
Habs get wrecked, and Lowell sixth, Utah seventh.
Can I just say, if the Ducks are this bad for this long
and never get a first overall pick,
it's going to be a sad day.
Just replace Ducks with Detroit.
San Jose has not earned their first overall pick yet.
Anaheim has.
I don't know, man.
They're bad.
San Jose is like historically bad.
But what I'm saying is that
had they been this bad for long enough,
And I don't think they have.
If I'm the Sharks truther, you're the Sharks liar.
I think the Ducks need to be bad for longer.
I'm sorry.
The Sharks need to be bad for longer because Anaheim.
Yeah, they've deserved this.
And at a certain point, like it does go to say that there is a lot of elements of truth of the fact that the tanking doesn't work the way that people think it does.
You look at the way the Leafs did it.
They hung on to some of their veterans.
JVR, Bozak, Kadri being three guys.
Morgan Riley was a young player, but he was up and coming.
They had Jake Gardner.
They had some of these guys that were already there.
And they played through that season and were the worst team in the NHL.
But they were not that bad.
Whereas now these teams are so bad.
And it's going to take so long to recover from it.
I really think there will be something like what we just saw with the Devils there.
Like a big jump?
Well, how many teams...
If the Sabres get it, I'm going to freaking laugh and also cry a little.
Well, how many teams in this league are really genuinely bad?
bad bad with no prospect of being good anytime soon san jose chicago anaheim and i would say
i would put columbus in there too columbus is a fascinating one they're a disjointed poorly
coached poorly managed team yeah until they change that well they have talent like that
they have talent i think jesse's pretty close i think it's i think it's three three i like i
because i can't really include chicago like they have connor bedard i know but the outside of
bedard it's kind of a way of playing but they're also competitive on most nights what about the
coyotes who are bad but have no kind of draft the coyotes are gonna go to utah and it's absolutely
depressing um they're gonna start buying and they're gonna be really good because they have
a shit ton of draft picks a great ton a lot of young prospects and they just spend money and
they'll be amazing and they have an owner that wants to spend money it's gonna be awful who by
the way now that the coyotes have moved who will general managers call when they get into cap
issues ghostbusters chicago's still there they've been taking salary for a little bit now and
you know it's like you know are you going to be able to get rid of the datsuk and the pronger and
the whoever else had ended up in arizona the same way carolina's always happy to throw you an anchor
like yeah somehow they're like always in contention and also like find a way to get involved in these
deals yeah that's such a good point though because a lot of i assume what the other 31 owners are
looking at is you had a team who is literally not trying to be competitive for money reasons yes and
you you're trying to get that out of the out of the league yeah that's what they're successfully
doing here i've listened to so many shows about the coyotes recently that i don't remember which
one this is from it's either cj show agent provocateur 32 thoughts um the fee that the
league is going to pay rather um ryan smith yeah ryan smith is going to pay the league is going to
be dispersed amongst the that would be ap ah that was ap there you go it's going to be dispersed
amongst the rest of the owners so they're all going to get like i don't know what 30 billion
dollars no under no no because it's uh the expansion fee is 1.3 billion and they're buying
it from uh for one billion no no but the the expansion fee that smith is paying is the 300
million on top of that yeah yeah yeah so that at 300 mil will be dispersed the rest of it yeah
yeah divided by 31 31 teams yeah so yeah so it's not it's not that no it's not 30 million it's like
10 million that's what that's what i was trying to say yeah i was like you're way off 10 times 30
yeah and i'm pretty sure they haven't determined yet if vegas and seattle will be in that because
if you remember when seattle came in the league vegas was excluded from the expansion fee because
they're a new team and they don't get it so it was dispersed amongst the 30 owners so this time
i don't know if seattle and vegas those owners are going to get their cut of that uh it's going to
be like what 12 million bucks why did that excite me like it 10 million bucks it shouldn't have i
don't get that money i do think i do think that's the the owner's way of getting their money back
after supporting this franchise for so long by the way uh vegas and seattle have come in and
been competitive and spent money so just based on that i feel like they deserve some of this yeah
but you're not a part of my club for as long yeah yeah you're you might be rich but you're not in
this rich club yeah yeah you're right you're right jesse and you know what there are teams like the
leafs and blackhawks and rangers and some of these big money teams boston detroit who have paid this
for the entirety of the franchises uh fall into whatever it is now whatever you'd call it right
so what a mess you know like especially the leafs and rangers who are the two highest generating
revenue teams you know they are the ones that have paid the most for the franchise and so i wonder if
they do that dispersal on a sliding scale so they look at it like okay this team paid this percentage
no that's too true if i was mlse i would get that anal about it because i'd be so mad the
lawyer this is how the lawyers got a lawyer that up i think so but that's what i'd be like i hired
the best lawyers in this entire country for this and if i were gary betman i would tap you on your
pretty little forehead and say alas no and just and it's only like read it out it's funny because
you say it's only 10 million that's great for all of us but like 10 million bucks to a billion
dollar franchise that's not true i said it's only 30 million it's not that much to your original
point with our draft lottery simulator and san jose getting that and all that stuff and you're
talking about tanking not working like you got a phone call during that and it was the buffalo
sabers being like yeah we were we hold the record for longest consecutive uh post-season
list streak of 13 uh now officially with the new york jets and that's a team that has tried to tank
for 13 seasons now and unsuccessfully they haven't even had a post-season birth and i feel like if
you're one of these teams who missed the playoffs and like you have great lottery odds it doesn't
really guarantee anything no i unless unless you hit it like we hit with matthews plus neilander
plus Marner plus everything kind of fell into place then you then like oh taking work but you
could also end up like Buffalo where you don't have anything to show for it after almost a decade
and a half silver lining with the Buffalo Sabres I know Sabres fans are very down on the Sabres
right now they didn't try to tank this year no it worked out that way but what they did isn't that
more depressing no no because they made two moves that made a lot of sense Bowen Byram Bowen Byram
for Casey Middlestat.
Middlestat,
you're not going to keep him.
And Byram makes you have...
It's three defensemen
who are top 10 picks in your...
Three, four years down the line,
it's easily conceivable
they could have the best
D-Core in the league.
Three, four years.
Do you see what you're saying, though?
No, no.
Yeah, but they improved
over the course of three, four years.
No, but to get there,
what about the previous 13?
Yes.
You're still doing the,
oh, in a couple years,
we're going to be...
you did that five years ago you did that seven years ago you did that 10 years ago and I'll tell
you when the Leafs made the playoffs in that crazy game where Connor Brown scored the game
winner against Pittsburgh in 2016 or sorry 2017 that was a crazy game crazy game uh and I've
never forgotten it and the and the stadium went nuts people were saying before that oh well like
if they don't win this game because Leaf fans prepare for the worst if they don't win this
game it's like not on this group it's not their fault that they've missed the last you know was
at 13 seasons except for one and my point is yes it is because it doesn't really matter that this
particular player wasn't there the jersey that they're wearing and the fan that is paying was
and so it actually is on unfortunately you put on a buffalo savers jersey the history comes with it
just like with the leafs and i think i i agree with you guys i think this is going to be a
spectacular team i think they'll be as good they'll be good as next year they're going to be
in the playoffs like i don't think the race for the bottom of the east is going to be so easy next
year i don't think we're gonna have a bunch of teams which like we do right now tied at 87 points
like there's how is it that the playoff cutoff is going to be like 91 who's supposed to go first
like usually we hear about them around this time we mean first overall in the draft yeah
macklin celebrating no next year oh next year oh um scott had somebody scott wheeler had somebody
that they had met yeah but he's a nerd yeah what a nerd what is like everyone's talking about it
yeah you know what i mean well i think we're because right now it's not time to talk about
taylor hall was well over a year ahead of time now we're talking about celebrini because he's
supposed to be amazing that's what i'm saying though like i'm is there like a worse draft class
is less incentive to tank unless you're the raptors then go for it get three picks be mid
be so mid be bad by actually trade your first round pick the previous year to make it into
one wild card game i really am gonna beat them up yeah they they i had to like they deserve a
i had to stop following them like like did you unfollow the raptors on no no no no no no not
like that like like i break up here dude i like obviously i pay hyper attention to the leafs but
then there's the jays who you can't pay attention to every damn game there's 162 uh there are people
that do i know but and i really love the raptors and finally i had to just be nba guy this year
because i was just like holy shit yeah i don't even recognize the starting lineup outside of
like grady dick and it's just tough so cory pronman back in november for the athletic today
2025 nhl draft top prospects a way too early ranking um number one overall he had james
haggins two porter matoni martone i know what i said i know what i said three roger mcqueen what
a name um that's brother of lightning mcqueen yeah that's actually fact cool uh four logan
hensler five matthew schaefer and six michael misa it's not michael misa i forgot about that
name yeah it's not a true nhl draft if somebody named logan is not in the top five projected you
have to have a logan in there it's just part of it okay how far down do you have to scroll to get
to the first connor uh six cole mckinnon oh close caleb caleb charlie drew oh drew shock i hope
goes to the last shot anton cullen oh conrad malcolm wow jacob yakob are we seeing a fall
off of will william carter gabriel none oh we only have four picks left wait what i thought it was
25 no they did 21 that's a random that's a very random number we're gonna have to talk to cory
promen about that why is that so random cory why why is it 21 this isn't blackjack with the
21 yeah no connors you know what's interesting about that list is it's not based on yes there's
actual maybe he could only find you know it is an old one but that's for the that's for the long
term yeah that's for the for the crowd the day one yeah yeah uh yeah no connor i know i know
and by the way i do want to mention and i think this is important uh that the wild card standings
are as follows pittsburgh game in hand on uh philly but they've got 86 points they're going
to need people to lose wow philly has played 81 they won their previous game they won their last
game. Konechny with a huge goal and a big
celly. 87 points. Detroit
game in hand, 87 points. Washington
game in hand, 87 points. So
Washington, Detroit, and Pittsburgh have
played 80 games. Philly played
81. So it's out of Philadelphia's
control. Good for the New York Islanders for just saying,
you know what, how about we just win a bunch?
I think you can lock them in there. Yeah, they're in.
7-2-1 in their last 10. They
wanted this. What's
hilarious about the teams
that are currently in the wild card
is that only one of them
has a plus 500 record in the last 10 games,
and that's the Pittsburgh Penguins.
7-1-2.
The Flyers are 2-6-2.
The Red Wings are 3-4-3.
And the Capitals are 3-5-2.
And the Caps are the only team there
that controls their own destiny, I guess.
Because they're in that second wildcard position.
If they just win out, win two games, you're good.
That's why I think Buffalo's going to make the playoffs
in a walk next year.
Because even with the season they've had,
they still have 82 points.
And all they need is some goaltending, and they're in.
I don't have them above Detroit anymore.
No?
No.
At all?
Detroit's going to come in next year and be a playoff.
What if Tage is back to 40 goals?
Eh.
I think Detroit's been better.
I think they're going to be better.
Way too early season predictions, but I have Detroit ahead of Buffalo.
Two of those teams, by the way, have plus goal differentials.
The Detroit Red Wings with a plus two.
The Penguins with a plus three.
The Capitals have a negative 40 differential,
although they currently hold the wildcard spot.
And the Flyers have a negative 25.
Interestingly enough, the Islanders, who are basically locked, we think, have a negative 21.
Capitals fans, let's be friends for a sec.
Why isn't Nikita Kucherov suspended right now?
Oh, the Tom Wilson thing.
Why isn't he suspended right now?
Even Lightning fans were like, well, that was Kucherov really losing it.
Dude, it's a premeditated elbow to the face.
It wasn't two minutes.
It wasn't five minutes.
It wasn't a fine.
It wasn't a suspension.
Why isn't he suspended right now?
Why?
There's footage of it.
We all saw it.
It went kind of viral.
Playoff rules?
No, you're not allowed to do that in the playoffs either.
Well, Game 7 against JVR, you're allowed to break his nose.
2013, people don't forget.
But that was ridiculous.
That's one of the most, like, that's such an easy call.
And then I think the Lightning got a power play out of it,
or there was a hooking call on the play.
I don't know who it was who ended up going down.
Kucherov didn't have a minor penalty that game.
Oh, okay.
i don't know that was just one of the easiest gimmies of the weekend even easier than the joe
valeno should have got five instead of two yeah where you're driving somebody's head and i think
we'll get to that yeah we'll get to that but uh yeah kucherov is just kind of allowed like say
what you want about tom wilson he gets suspended though yes yes like yeah oh he's dirty okay yeah
but like he gets suspended no that's just that's allowed that's allowed maddie if you want to pull
it up here there's the that's a rough elbow to the other even if that's a mistake yeah just yeah
see the shoulder check he knows here he comes and here he boom right to the ear nose and throat
right in your face wow he elbows him in the face on purpose and kucherov does by doing crazy shit
like one of the craziest rats in the league yeah but he he creates room people don't want that
they physically do not want that i don't think tom wilson gives a shit but so you see there again
he does the shoulder check he knows tom wilson's coming tom wilson switches to the right side
kucherov elbows him right in the face it's okay though it's okay though no one saw it
no one saw it like that's why you have to look at the look at the boat that's why you have two
linesmen you have two linesmen on the ice to ignore when things like this there's a linesman
looking at it there's a ref looking at it's a it's okay in their defense it's the puck carrier
i i want to you suck at your job but i want to say for kucherov's sake that i do think there
was a bit of a message sent there which is i will do this to tom wilson imagine what i'll do to you
oh a hundred percent like they think that's a message to the uh what is it boston bruins that
they're probably playing he he might win mvp and he's also just a little bit of a sociopath like
sometimes the best players in the league have a little bit of that in them malcolm definitely
malcolm prime malcolm oh my crazy person prime malcolm current yeah current malcolm will eat
your freaking liver yeah i think this adds to kucherov's case for mvp yeah what about lady
bing no no one's talking about lady why why do you say that it's the trophy for the player who's
most important to your team if the guy who is the biggest asshole on your team is also your best
player the way hockey works
that adds to his case for the hard
you know
you know
hey decent argument Jesse is Steve
Nikita Kucherov
elbowed you in the face not
once mean not what I don't just
can I don't condone that type of behavior
I'm kidding hey by the way can we get to the
big story because we got to do this
hey
Matthews the sex number
69
we have 69 goals for Austin Matthews
so now because it's hockey that creates an issue like in no other sport could a player
on the precipice of greatness create so much negative publicity and it starts with Sheldon
Keefe and I sort of get it but this is such a hockey thing and it drives me crazy and this
trust me we're getting to the to the point here but Sheldon Keefe expressed this weekend that it
did create a bit of a distraction that even Keefe moved off his own game plan called the timeout
which i thought was a great move by the coach i did to keep keep austin out there towards the
end of the game with the power play um the people what they want it's hockey night absolutely and
he was talking about well the fans every time he you know matthews got out there the fans were
excited and it's like yeah that's good yeah but like don't act like him scoring 70 wouldn't have
just been a lightning bolt to the rest of your team it would have made your job for the next
two games easier because now you don't have to play him like yeah he he embedded matthews getting
70 goals into his strategy because honestly he should have yes but he didn't and now there's a
problem so question steve and jesse i want your answers and then we debate for the bet mgm big
story do you play matthews two times if it gets him to 70 so there are two options in this okay
he plays zero games this week in florida and stays at 69 yeah or he plays two gets the goal
in the second game.
So he has to get the goal
in the second game.
There's no option
where he only plays one.
No, there's no option in this
where he only...
So, because...
And I want to remind you
before I say this,
before I get your answers.
Patrice Bergeron
chose to play
against the Montreal Canadiens
in Game 82 last year.
A game where he,
on the record-breaking,
unbelievable,
unstoppable Boston Bruins,
hurt his back
and was not the same
against the Florida Panthers throughout the series.
It hurt the Boston Bruins.
Obviously, there were other issues,
goaltending injuries, et cetera.
But the Boston Bruins,
who broke all the records last year,
didn't get out of the first round.
So you guys got to be the head coach now.
We are guaranteeing that Matthews hits 70 in game 82.
He will not score in game 81
in this hypothetical scenario.
What do you do?
Do you play him or do you arrest him?
No one's going to like this answer.
Set him.
steven i know why why because of all the reasons you just outlined don't set me up for the right
answer and then scold me for it jesse it's such a tough one because like my mind goes to you can
get injured in game one you can get injured in game 82 but game 82 everything's solved
in game one nothing solved that so like that logic i'm trying to fight against myself i mean
that argument you gotta play at some point i know but like on game one right everything you're
fighting for something yes on game 82 you're not fighting for anything right there's nothing
competitive that you're competing for because everything's been solved you know what's going
to happen you made the playoffs you know who you're going to face so logically you can't just
chase a round number like you you have to you have to sit up well not to mention if the bruins
lock down the one seed today that locks florida into two and the leafs into three it locks the
leafs in florida into we know who's playing where and when the game on tuesday will just be a i'm
trying to break all of your bones fest because there's nothing at stake there's nothing at stake
other than softening up your first-round opponent?
Why wouldn't you just staple yourself to Austin Matthews
and cross-check him in the vertebrae?
Especially if it's the Panthers.
Yes!
Now, I gave you a hypothetical, guys.
Is there a world where you speak to Austin and go,
listen, we're not playing you against Florida.
And I think the reasons are obvious.
We will play you against Tampa.
And as soon as you score, if you score,
you don't play another shift.
oh you think he doesn't play tomorrow but he plays wednesday i wonder if they do that only because
uh does that make does that not make a lot more sense don't expose him to don't expose him to
the panthers i would do i would do the i think you play him tomorrow you really made it too yeah
now with nick cousins and sam bennett and all those killers out there who love tampa has tampa
has the same type yeah but tampa's tampa's different because they're playing boston and
they don't want to get hurt either that like i think i think adam's right in that wednesday is
going to be two teams who are like you know what i got bigger fish to fry right now i don't care
about you you don't care about me we don't like each other we don't have to like each other if
we meet down the road we meet down the road right now we have our team to beat you have your team to
beat let's play some ahlers and get the hell out of here that's the easier game where everybody's
doing it it's right and you put matthews in that game yeah yeah to play against to score his 70th
of the season against uh well I don't even Jonas Johansson or Matt Tompkins or whatever their names
are yeah I oh boy boys girls children of all ages I don't think it's happening you don't think so
that was going to be my next question Jesse do you think 70 happens yeah I think he plays one
of the next two games I don't think he sits both games you don't you don't think he plays again
if he gets hurt in either of the next two games someone's someone has to be fired for that
decision you don't think he plays nope oh i disagree with that i think you give him one
more game i think you gotta give him yeah i think you gotta i like it listen if he had 70 right now
as we sat i'd be like yeah no you're not even you're not even flying to florida it's not even
a discussion yeah it's not even a discussion but now i mean you saw the look on his face
you know the conversations were had beforehand oh baby oh so i think i think you're absolutely
right i do i want to say this if you were to put money on austin matthews scoring 70
okay if you're to put money on it right now you're gonna go to betmgm.com slash dangle okay
and you're gonna you're gonna say i'm putting a two dollar steve on this would you say yay or nay
give it to me give me the real one he doesn't think he's gonna play well how are you gonna
bet on him hitting 70 i just want to hear him say it you know what i mean like he's saying it
but i want you to say it let's say it with your chest into the camera austin matthews won't hit
70 yeah say it no i already have the nathan mckinnon clip i can't say it if you believe it
then say it austin matthews will score 70 oh he won't so you don't you don't believe it say it
you don't believe your own your own argument you ask me what i think will happen and then there's
my listen no you're asking no he's trying to get around who are you asking who are you asking are
you asking all right you're looking at me you're looking at me but i'm made of flesh and bone are
you asking my brain or heart steve i am asking who steve dangle steve let me i didn't let him
go let him go ask you a question let him go steve dangle the person with their entire life savings
on their line on the line okay don't do that i do two dollars absolutely gone to your head
under the earth the aliens have arrived they say steve kellerman
are you putting money on austin scoring 70 or austin not scoring 70 if you're wrong
we blow up the earth which side are you betting on
i've lived my whole life as a leaf fan i'll die as a leaf fan two dollars gun to the earth
on austin matthews scoring seven okay all right so all that nonsense about him not playing like
you're fucking again you ask my brain or you ask my heart all right jesse are you putting uh would
you put money on yeah i think he plays one of the next two games he scores a goal okay now don't

weekend as far as the leafs go not good if your name begins with mick mccabe mcmahon both suffering
injuries mccabe will be uh no listen it's quite the theme it is a theme uh mccabe will be fine
mcmahon we don't know and he's not skating today the knee thing is always a bit scary
i'm hoping that he's okay lower body but we just don't know it but it looked like knee hyper
extension yeah i hope it's not and he's so fast too god every time i watch him i'm like what what
was everyone missing you know what i mean i think there's probably a lot of players like that though
that have the skills but it's like have you put this together there's a lot of good hockey he had
like i don't know if he's playing all that different like every time he took the ice even
last year i was like hey this player rules right right i i don't know so he's he's added such a
layer of depth um like defensively too like he can be trusted in in all situations nick robertson's
surge and the fact cal yarn crow appears to be coming back makes the loss of mcmahon stomachable
but boy the playoff lineup looks a lot better with him in it i think so too and i wonder if
it's one of those things that that you know they've been tight-lipped about it but i wonder
if it's one of those things that it's like oh he could be ready by game three or game four well
what if it's something like he can play fourth line like you you gotta manage his minutes and
instead of nice playing fourth line um you just swap their roles well and okay but is that bobby
mcmahon like are you able to use that bobby mcmahon remember years ago uh zach hyman well
tyler johnson even you years ago uh when he was playing for the lightning and it's like he had a
bad wrist and it or it was like broken and they put him in the lineup and you're and you said
is it if is 50 of tyler johnson better than whoever else you have it was uh i want to say
their healthy scratch at the time was like vlad namaskov and i was like okay who's better
vlad namaskov healthy or tyler johnson with a broken wrist it's probably vlad namaskov let's
be honest so like who's better Bobby McMahon or Nick Robertson no that's not the question is it
Bobby McMahon with a hyper extended busted knee or Nick Robertson healthy and the great thing
about Nick Robertson is that he has come on very strong lately oh so that's that's actually
a fantastic thing to have and sticking up for Lilligren too I love that he's got to be one
of the smallest players in the league and to see him do that that's awesome he's been spectacular
lately and i i keep saying he's going to score 20 goals next year it's it's it's going to book it
it's going to happen score 20 goals this year if he gets enough ice time in the last two games yeah
uh 14 goals 12 assists uh so far this year and what's been great about it is that a lot of that
has come off of games where he's been scratched in the last five games by the way he has four
points not bad for a guy playing literally he plays about 10 minutes a night it's encouraging
because that's probably how he's going to get into playoff action this year is coming off the
forget coming off the bench you're coming out of the press box is a healthy scratch
right so it's it's good a lot of nick robertson fans in leafs nation a lot of people rooting for
this guy why wouldn't there be why like i i know we had uh conversations earlier in the season he
was a little disappointing you know and he gets injured again and you start wondering maybe that's
it like maybe that's as good as this gets um we've seen enough evidence that we know it's
an act of insanity to trade this player keep them re-sign them develop them if it doesn't work out
down the line it doesn't work out but all roads point to this kid's gonna rule yeah keep him do
you think he looks good on a Tavares line would you put him with Tavares Nylander I would you or
do you put Yarncroke up there which Yarncroke played a lot next to Tavares I'd probably rather
do that like I I wouldn't prefer Nick to play that much but like also he shouldn't be on the
fourth line so really you're just looking at third you're looking at Holmberg Robertson
blank space maybe Nylander and then Marner's up with Tavares because Domi by the way is not
skating at practice today either it could be a maintenance day we don't really know so then
And Nize or Yarncroak fills the Bobby McMahon slot.
And Nize has looked good, although his whistle has not.
I think there's a lot of sticks and a lot of holds in Matthew Nize's recent pass,
and he's got to clean that up.
I think it all comes back to the cardio, the college cardio.
I think next year he'll clean a lot of that up.
Because they're playing, what, half the season the NHL guys are?
yeah like he's uh he's dude like he's he breathes heavy out there on this first full season playing
82 games like he's never done this before and we're not uh giving him enough leeway for for
that fact he's just he's a rookie yes like matthew knox okay he was in the playoffs last year and
everything but this is full full full season as an nhl and he's still getting used to it and not
not just his full season in the nhl his most common line this year was the first like his
life was made easy yeah wait what his life was made easy you think so no like i think well easy
to get his cookies but like that dude's playing way too much or like at least during that stretch
right he's probably playing way too much um fascinating player i like how he's played
recently he doesn't look tired now no because i think it's eased off you know they set him up to
to have success you know you play him with matthews and all that stuff but it's clearly
too much for him at the moment because it's his first year and now he's probably in a role that
more suits him and it's it sucks that you go from the first line to your fourth line but
it's probably where you should that's also being a young player right yeah there's so
few players you can look at and say like the look at on the leafs and say they've had a worse
second half than first they all seem to have progressively gotten better i agree with that
Nylander is maybe the only one just because he was like, what, top five in NHL scoring for the first half of the season.
And now he can't friggin buy one.
But I think he's still playing well.
Like McMahon, Samsonov minus.
Jomie, Bertuzzi, Reeves.
Like they all look good.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like and well, I was going to say Brody, but not Brody.
Sort of been bad the whole time.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Outside of Brody.
Nice to see him score.
Outside of Gio as well.
Yeah.
some of the yeah you know yeah what a nitpick yeah well exactly i and i think you'd have a
right to nick pit nick nitpick um tj brody and morgan riley playing together on uh on saturday
night from time to time and it's just like it's so plainly obvious and that first goal i mean i
know sammy didn't have a great game i get it especially goal four if if sammy doesn't let
that squeaker in the least win the game um but uh the reality is that that you know riley brody
give up too many opportunities they don't mesh well anymore why do the Leafs continue to do
and that wasn't because they were set together that was because McCabe went out yes and they
had but you sorry Lilligren went out but then you but you still don't have to do that you still have
four other choices that you can make to play with Riley anybody I try Edmondson I I hate them
together I really do I genuinely hate them together um but you're playing with five guys
the amount of times this season the Leafs have lost the defenseman in the first period of a game
is insane and i've been pointing this out since like christmas um it just keeps happening it's
the second time it's been lilligran um and the second time uh i thought there should have been
a call on the play or a five minute major on the play and this one was way more blatant than the
the marsh and one i at least understood the argument that you know uh it's a battle joe
Valeno saw numbers the entire way,
drove a player's head into the boards,
not the glass, the boards.
And what mistake was made on the play?
By the Leaf or by Joe Valeno?
Anyone.
I think Valeno having his hands
on the back of Lilligren's head was the mistake.
Oh, Adam, that's the literal answer,
but you're wrong.
The answer is Timothy Lilligren
did not pretend like he was dead.
Oh.
it's the only thing these guys understand the game's too fast they don't see it they got it
wrong they'll never explain how they got it wrong because they don't know how to speak
and when they do speak they get suspended it was a miserable sad sack of shit call that's not two
minutes that's five monday tuesday wednesday thursday maybe not friday because you go out
on a friday saturday sunday it's a miserable fucking call and and you know you point that
out at first intermission and no one wanted to hear that because the leafs just allowed a shitty
goal and they were down 4-1 it changed the entire complexion of the game it was 1-0 leafs uh they
score sorry rather it was it was 0-0 the leafs score on the two minute minor yeah the red wings
tie it when the Leafs should have still been on the power play yes they should have still been on
the power play it's a five-minute major every day of the week I don't know why it wasn't and we'll
never know because it's just not a league yeah I think uh I think it's also a shame too that it's
Timothy Lilligren both times Brad Marchand early in the season Joe Valeno now and and you know I
know he got up and he skated and he was in pain and whatever and had to go off because of the
concussion spotter i would argue the leafs were penalized more by the fact that timothy lilligren
had to be concussion spotted after that they had to take him to the room and check on him and make
sure he was okay because and that pulls him off the ice i honestly didn't think i was like oh
lilligren's done for the next month yeah me too that was it was so dangerous it it you know yeah
so it's a two-minute minor also they pull him out of the game well at least someone saw the hit
i'm glad the concussion spotter saw the hit ref saw a guy down and just made a guess they just
made a guess yeah yeah it's it's a miserable well and what they could have done was call the major
first and then call it back they have a get out of jail free card if they didn't feel like that
was uh you know they could have just called the major go oh let's have a look at that no it's
eagle it's eagle it's eagle uh no i don't need to review it i'm smart i'm in the nhl i don't need
it yes you do stupid you got it wrong got it wrong like i i listen i know who i cheer for
i know my biases um i do my best to take those blue glasses off cool down do my breathing
exercises try to look at it objectively write it down in crayon and explain it to me like i'm five
but i think if you five take that and compare that to nikita kucherov too right it's the it
That wasn't even the worst call of the weekend.
Both of those were bad.
And it's interesting because there hasn't been any fines or suspensions or any talk of it.
It's fine.
It's all good.
It's all good.
Don't worry about it.
But, hey, hey, someone did do something unforgivable.
Is that Mitch Marner scoring the easiest goal of his life?
And I was thrilled for him, by the way.
No, it was Kevin Shattenkirk got a fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Did he yell at the ref?
I don't know what he did.
I assume that's what he did.
And how dare him?
Oh.
it's not a leaf uh the leafs have rebuilt or at least they've begun the process of rebuilding
matt murray he was uh loaned to the marlies on a conditioning stint now did not have a great game
no he did not he allowed five goals and under 30 shots but they won one in the shootout and
clinched a playoff spot uh so good for matt murray to see you know to see him back and playing and
he's 29 years old now hasn't played a game since last march uh for him to to be here
i mean listen if you look at his numbers last year with the leafs even playing on the injury
14 8 and 2 with a 903 save percentage a 903 save percentage is a nhl goalie this year
that's average it's i mean he was a you just never knew what you were gonna get because he was hurt
no but like like he had a few games he stole stole and then a few where you're just like
all right put a shooter tutor in net like it was it's it's funny like he had didn't he have a
stretch where it was like four goals every game and like they weren't miserable games like you
wouldn't really come out of the game and go well that's all his fault kind of like Sammy on Saturday
night not all his fault yeah but then the streak goes on for long enough and you're like can you
stop some of them yes agreed and that's what I would say with Sammy by the way uh there's a really
great piece in the athletic uh I think it's Jonas Siegel that did it with Matt Murray uh him coming
back and the and the passing of his father who was an enormous Toronto Maple Leafs fan and why
Matt Murray was so excited to be here in the first place so I think you should you should check out
that story but I want to talk Sammy for a sec guys because I tweeted in the first period I'm like
we're gonna hang a lot of this on Sammy but like the Leafs are hanging him out to dry and then he
let in the fourth goal and I was like well thanks Sammy at a certain point everybody who responded
to my tweet was right which is you gotta stop something yes and he did but but I felt like I'm
like oh god monday that's going to be a story but the way he played in period two and period three
i don't know that it is i i agree with that um and tavaris pointed him uh when he tied the game
which is it's it's a fun little full circle thing because remember earlier this season
samsonov is brutal he allows one i think it was in a tight game too like leafs were barely even
losing or losing by one and there's the the camera catches Tavares eyes in the sky just
rolling his eyes like we can't win a game with this guy the point to Sammy when they tied it
to me suggested during second or rather first intermission the discussion was we left Sammy
out to dry and they did they did like okay yeah he allowed one bad one he allowed one bad one
Were the other ones that bad?
He allowed three before that, and it's like John Tortorella,
you'd like a goddamn occasional save with John Graham.
Oh, they're all point blank.
Like, point blank.
Quick movement, basically one-timers.
There's one where, I think it was the third one,
he stops the puck how you're supposed to.
Like, he's trying to direct it away.
Debrinket is right there
being Debrinket and no one
is between Debrinket and the puck
I think it was on the power play
man like I listen I knew
it was 3-1 you could have saw my
reaction live on the SCPN YouTube channel
on our watch along
when they were down 3-1
I wasn't like oh Sammy Sammy
oh Sammy fourth one was Sammy
right and
because by virtue of it
being 4-1 I panicked and I went on a big rant about him because you know it's four but then
I thought about it throughout the intermission I'm like is it four or is it one you got to pick
yeah right you can't on the first one you don't like be like and now it's four so you're going
from zero to four that's not how it works and that's exactly what I did so in terms of goals
he should have had
out of the five.
He allowed five.
Yep.
One.
I mean, the OT winner,
it's three on three.
Oh, man.
But if there's a power play,
it's four on three,
which is like a death sentence.
So the Max Domi penalty
pulls their goalie.
The Max Domi penalty
at the end of the game
is unforgivable.
You can't, you cannot.
Domi had a bad game.
Yeah, he didn't have a great game.
Ah!
The pass to Matthews
was frigging sick.
Or wait, am I thinking
of the right game?
No, I'm thinking
of the wrong game.
Sorry.
You're right.
i'm sorry they're all blending together my bad the trip not great the trip not great
here's what else isn't great who does keith start with in overtime
uh i believe it was brody benoit kampf how far do you expect to get
at that point you're just preparing to hunker down i don't okay i i want to just i want to
say again i want to say again austin matthews has killed penalties this year i know he had just
played five minutes fine john tavaris has has is able to win face-offs you can you can there's so
many options david conf and and really david conf is the best choice of the three of them brody
benoit how about this how about this there's no situation none i brody three on three i actually
kind of like okay okay but that wasn't three on three was it no it's four on three nope
simon benoit you lost two defensemen no mccabe no lilligren benoit and uh lilligren was back
oh he was okay lilligren was back and he kills penalties i don't know he does it great but he
does uh does morgan riley not exist maybe he was out too long with matthews uh oh for crying out
loud like uh no but you had a you had a break you didn't have a third period of overtime yeah
joel edmondson didn't play i don't think or like in the game yeah no what'd you get elia labushkin
for i would i thought stops like that but you know i don't think we've seen labushkin in overtime
ever now now you might say well there's benoit so you might say we'll get brody out there for
some mobility or whatever well then what's benoit out there for there's an argument that you could
have gone with two forwards i don't know what about martin or conf that's kind of what i was
thinking yeah and but like the the first face-off is so important i don't know if that's the best
you can do it's this is our lockdown overtime hero penalty kill maybe you didn't do enough
at the deadline i think it's a lot less relevant now that the playoffs are coming you know how many
how many times are you gonna have a four on three we'll see there's been a lot of times where the
leafs might have won a playoff series if they got a damn power play goal yeah um i'm talking about
the penalty kill well no sorry i'm talking about special teams like special teams even though
murder's legal in the playoffs they matter right i'm talking about i'm talking about this specific
situation where it's four on three in overtime i don't think comes up very often right i'm gonna
forgive keith for them allowing this goal yeah it's just one of those things where like oh yeah
you trust brody to kill penalties and i'm like okay well what if you stopped right i think the
larger issue is we're not big fans of tj brody's game in any situation yeah and our opinion is
based in fair super fair reality so what situation is tj brody meant for because if it's not five on
five and it's not the penalty kill then it's probably seventh defenseman seventh defenseman
seventh defenseman like he's made some good plays recently you know who also has connor timmons like
uh mark giordano like you know players aren't just ass out there um i don't think he's one
of their top six options all right so based off the lineup from saturday you take out brody and
you have edmondson in there probably 100 yeah uh easton cowan is now at 42 straight games
i expected i thought you were gonna say is called up no about to say what the no i believe the
london knights are in the playoffs uh 42 straight games with a point he's awesome he's awesome i
You know, and I think this is interesting just because, you know, when you look at somebody's numbers from like their season 18 to season 19, or I guess he was 17 last year and then turned 18 in time for the draft.
And last year he had 68 games played, 53 points this year, 54, 96 points.
And also currently six games in the playoffs.
He has seven points.
They I mean, we didn't like the pick at the time.
No one did.
very few people did um but the number one um defense of the easton cowan pick was
look at how he improved throughout the season and i did a breakdown of this i don't i don't
have the numbers in front of me but when i did the video from when he was drafted
uh if you broke his season down into quarters and then had the playoffs he kept getting better in
terms of points per game and shots per game and here he is just continuing that and not just
continuing that like he's a friggin monster out there it's not like he's he's he's uh goal sucking
here this is a guy that that is dominating play he's dominant how is he leading the london knights
in scoring i will check that for you right now he must be uh no denver barkley or barky denver
barky why is that guy not why is he not in the whl uh round three 95th overall selection last
of the philadelphia flyers is he wow he had 59 points in 61 games last year now 102 and 64
gosh yeah pretty crazy has cowan played fewer games uh yes yeah because he world juniors right
yep okay wow dude he's a great player i i can't wait to it's gonna be exciting i think i was
talking to scott wheeler about it earlier and scott and i hope scott doesn't kill me for this
but scott is of the opinion at least he was a couple weeks ago that uh easton is going to play
for the leafs at least a little bit next year like out of camp yeah i would imagine yeah you
get that little stint at the beginning of the season yeah which is kind of cool i mean the
fraser minton thing at the beginning of the season was a bit odd but also that's fun they're free
games yeah why not like like so wait wait what do you mean i get a player who makes dirt and uh
also if i don't play them above a certain amount of games their contract slides
it's a bit of a wonder why more teams don't try it yeah i feel like most teams do like i don't
know was fraser like was fraser minton confidently an nhl player during those four games or whatever
he played no but he was fine you got to see what you got you got to see what you send it back and
you're fine you also get to see how far away he is i don't think there's anything wrong with
learning that a player shouldn't be in your lineup especially uh that early in the season
and when you expect your team to be good enough to overcome four games with a whl player four games
that's it you know they won a few of those like i don't know i i uh i got faith my new favorite
player is denver barky yeah what a name the name denver barky is like he's gonna be a star for the
liars they got a good one denver barky sounds like uh like a cowboy movie but all the characters are
golden retrievers uh it's too bad cutter goche didn't stick it out in philadelphia denver barky
and cutter goche could have been on the same damn could be the same team same lineup at the same
time good names that'd be uh all-star names good uh good cop bond cop movie um uh nicholas matten
uh who is a former leafs draft pick from 2016 has signed a two or one year two-way deal uh starting
next season now if you don't remember him he was the he was a mark hunter special uh six foot five
london knight teammate of mitch marner at one point uh has gone to the del and had a really
good season and actually somebody on my linked linkedin it's linkedin messages were like hey
have you checked out this guy blah blah blah and then and then literally the leaf sign i'm like 24
hours later he's like well i guess i'm going to the show i'm uh i'm a genius um but every single
defenseman that um uh brad true living has brought in uh in his time with the leafs is six foot one
or bigger this also coincides with kate weber and that includes john klingberg like everybody
everybody has size everyone forgets yeah but uh kade weber six foot six nicholas mattinen uh six
foot five and had a is having a good year in the del apparently according to jack khan anyway
his best work is neutral zone and offensive zone is going to have to work on his defensive zone
retrievals to get a call up but the marley's very least are going to get a lot bigger next year
straight up too good for the del he led his team in goals and points as a defenseman a right-handed
huge defenseman 46 points 52 games for the strobbling uh tigers uh nicholas martin and from
you guessed it ottawa
i thought it was odd that the leafs didn't give him an ahl contract i yeah yes you know i i thought
it was weird that you just right away hey here's an nhl deal from where where is that league germany
yeah it's the germany like right from there you get to come to the nhl instead of you starting
with the marley's like wouldn't that make the most sense so i was like curious piece of work
there from true living well so he's got a really weird uh path right so he played uh two seasons
in the cchl which i believe is junior a uh two seasons with the london knights then he goes to
the flint firebirds splits that with the flint firebirds and hamilton bulldogs where he spent
two seasons uh finishes out his ohl career with the oshawa general so he was a suitcase
for sure then uh he decides you know what you know what's going to be a great idea the leafs
drafted me but haven't signed me i'm gonna go play u sports he goes and plays u sports at the
university of ottawa in his hometown um then um do you know how he did the next season well he
He didn't play because the world stopped and you store you sports didn't play.
Right.
So he comes into the twenty one twenty two season without having played hockey for a year.
Didn't play hockey for a year.
He only plays 18 games when it comes back.
At the end of those 18 games, the Laval Rocket decide we liked what we saw a little bit.
Goes and plays eight games with them.
So he does play pro in North America.
Three points in eight games.
He plays last season in Austria, does pretty well.
Plays this season in Germany, does extraordinarily well.
And now he's signed to not an AHL deal.
Well, somebody just is an NHL contract.
Somebody else was in on it then.
That's probably what it took to get the deal.
He did really, really well.
I bet there were multiple suitors and the Leafs probably said,
we'll give you that's what I would bet.
Yeah.
And I question we'll see.
Like, I don't know.
I'm questioning a guy I've never seen play or anything like that.
maybe he's outstanding but it's weird to be bidding for this type of a six round draft pick
from what 2016 is 2016 yeah so that long ago and that's a matthew's draft hell so wait though it's
funny i remember uh bemoaning mark hunter and all the picks he made yeah he allegedly made uh 2016
and martin and being brought up and oh he's only big why did they what did they even
well now 2016 is eight years in the past um do you want to hear the list of names of nhl players
drafted after montanen who have played in the nhl i don't know do i okay what well adam what do you
what do you think about columbus draft pick calvin thurkhoff who played three games and put up zero
points a great player what what do you what do you think about a jeremy davies from the new jersey
devils who has no goals and the three assists and how many games 23 wow so not a when you get to that
part of the draft oh no i'm not done just throwing darts okay what about um tied for the leading goal
score amongst players who were drafted after montanen um from san jose jeremy blickfield with
one goal in eight games he got a goal he got a goal and far and away the games played leader but
tied he has 111 games played one goal vinnie day harney the seaweed seaweed man so um i'm gonna go
out on a limb and say late sixth round picks don't often hit and maybe we i think that's why it's a
little curious to give this guy an nhl contract they must really believe in him i think adam's
right like uh well kade weber too yeah ncaa guy yeah he won defensive defenseman of the year but
like he could play in the nhl next year and i mean he and again there were multiple suitors
for kade weber the leafs just got his rights first yeah he has more recent north american
hockey chops yes i think the difference um between montan and other guys who have great seasons in
europe is uh like he's played most of his life in north america and i think maybe because of
his name people don't necessarily realize that even me yesterday i'm like ottawa yep right um
uh yeah it's a it's a fascinating contract steve one thing you did there was leave out the people
drafted directly above dude some really good ones i won't lie if the leafs had simply traded up
in the sixth round they could have been hit me jesse they could have drafted so wait wait wait
Where was Montanen drafted?
179th overall.
All right.
At 159, Brandon Hagel.
At 160, Michael Pozzetta.
At 162, this is the...
This one fucking hurts.
Unreal steal, Jesper Brod.
Wow.
And here's why this hurts, Jesse.
Go ahead and look at the first pick of the sixth round.
Jack Walker.
Of the Leafs.
The Leafs had the opportunity to select Brandon Hagel, Michael Pagano, or Jesper Brant.
No!
Son of a gun!
Also, they'd had five opportunities before that, too.
Yes.
Assuming they had five draft picks before that.
Oh, they had a lot more than that.
So did every other team in the league.
Oh, that makes me sad.
Yeah.
You know, there's always going to be that, though.
There is always going to be that.
Hey, by the way, just for fun, funsies, what does DEL stand for?

Not quite
On Friday
I teased you
Give you a slight tickle
And it was about National Hockey Card Day
Which was Saturday, April 13th, my birthday
National Hockey Card Day
now we told you
that we had something coming from the Get Real
movement it's a Canadian non-profit
focused on combating 2SLGBTQ
plus discrimination racism and bullying
in hockey and it was going to launch
something special in honor of it
and we all know that rare
rookie cards can be extremely valuable
we talked about the fact that you sold one of your Ovechkins
but you still have the other one
in the 107 year history
of the NHL there has never been
an openly 2SLGBTQ plus player
in the NHL.
The NHL is the last
of the big four North American leagues,
NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL,
to count an openly 2SLGBTQ plus player
among its ranks.
So on National Hockey Card Day,
the Get Real movement
launched this,
the rarest rookie card.
Oh!
This card,
and it says it on the back,
is reserved for the first openly
a 2SLGBTQ plus hockey player
in the league's history
who has yet to make their debut
or maybe they have
and we just don't know.
The more we create
welcoming spaces in sports
for the 2SLGBTQ plus community,
the sooner this card
will be replaced by a real player.
The launch of the card
will be accompanied
by a new sports
and recreation DEI workshop
and educational resources
from the organization
outlining both the reason
for hockey's lack of inclusion
with tools for players, coaches, and leagues
that equip them with actions that they can take
to create more welcoming spaces at all levels of hockey.
There will be 107 digital collectible cards being released.
And of course, a little bit of a shout out
to Luke Prokop as well, who broke barriers,
who became the first openly gay player under NHL contract,
but he has yet to make his NHL debut.
So you can support this by bidding on your digital card
or by donating to the Get Real movement,

in a new way this year,
asking Canadians to put aside their differences
and cheer for Canada.

It's been 30 years with no cup,
and Boston Pizza is inviting Canada's Canadians
to rally it and bring it home,

or if you're part of Leafs Nation.
if there was a team that you could cheer for that you could get behind that wasn't your own
because we're going for the country this year this is easy for me steve is it easy for you
i think it's easy for me i i think so we should do it at the same time three two one connor mcdavid
i'm not rooting for the oilers i'm rooting for connor mcdavid because it would be wrong for the
sport of hockey if
Connor McDavid ever
ends his career without
a Stanley Cup he needs
one so if there's any
team besides the Leafs
I'm going to root for
it's the Edmonds and
Oilers right team wrong
guy Zach Hyman the
last time Canada won
the Cup Steve was five
years old yep Jesse
yeah you were two
years old were you not
that math I think would
math I don't know

um nick jensen will miss the rest of the regular season just this week uh after a jarring hit from
mikey acemont and and here's the thing uh acemont does this and he's one guy that i feel like
i'm surprised more teams don't just go hey listen you're gonna stop that and we're gonna fill your
face in with punches dubas wanted him in the worst way last year he wanted him a bit of a rat
good rat good rat you need rats absolutely yeah my team has rats uh your team should have more
this is a brutal hit though have you seen this thing it's it's it's that's one of those ones
where like i looked at the valeno hit and i looked at like the kucherov elbow like to me those are
very cut and dry this one's a little bit less so okay um even scouting the refs was like i think
that's a minor listen like sometimes there are you know clean or borderline clean hits that just
have a really bad result yes this is a bad result though man he folds like a freaking suit it sucks
but he's watching it in real time you really get how fast it's going and the push and the fall into
the boards yeah and it is boarding like at the end of the day that is boarding like oh god yeah
that's bad that's rough um i just wanted to i wanted to highlight that one because we forgot
to do what we were doing kucherov and uh tom wilson um the funny thing i think that uh came
out all this was nick dowd in the penalty box uh turning to eastbound going good job because he he
fought after so they they fought each other because of the hit and he's like yeah way to do the hockey
guy thing at least at least you fought so he's like good job all right you know what i'll give
him credit for that too i'll give him credit for that too because there's plenty of guys
nick cousins nick cousins nick cousins who can't do that because they'll lose i uh i i respect it
i know there's a code but if i just fought for my buddy that you just put on a stretcher i think
i'd have a hard time telling you good job i get that i get that we're all in this this club
together we're hockey bros we're brethren good job steve if i'm throwing punches at your face
i assure you we are not all in this together what were you trying to do win the fight i assume
fuck you um all right so uh i thought you would find this interesting uh on the coyotes which i
have saved for later because i think coyotes fans have been hit pretty hard this weekend uh but
there was some information that came out obviously alan and i did a really great show alan was just
on fire in terms of explaining the whole situation because what i've had and i've had a frustrating
time trying to cover this is bits and pieces from everywhere as they leak out alan oh so frustrated
alan had the whole thing and here it is all all in one package so uh you should check out agent
provocateur it was a great episode and it fully explains everything from the business to the
player side um including right down to the players getting 25 000 bucks to help move their families
each of them will get 25 000 bucks alan walsh has never had to say hey uh bring up a laptop i need
to look something up no he just knows it's there it's all there uh david lebowitz uh it's a name
that you probably don't know he's a crisis and pr uh person i looked him up online uh basically
if your business uh or your personal brand are going through a crisis you can hire a guy like
him he said 15 years of pr and crisis comms i've never shit talked a former client but i'll make
an exception for murillo and his clown car of toadies the arizona coyotes deserved so much
better i reached out to david for an interview and he rightly said no thank you because you can't
crisis pr you can't interview that's fair enough dude remember uh covid this is one of the covid
episodes that we did from uh remotely and um i don't remember a lot of those because there was
a miserable time in all our lives and we block it out but that's how we met katie strang and
katie strang had just written an article about how dysfunctional things were in arizona and it's
a hit piece and it was mean and at what like i just i i would like to acknowledge that or i would
like people to acknowledge that it's not that we're right about alex morello now it's that we've
always been right about this guy and i and i think that's why people are especially arizona fans are
the most heartbroken because they really, I think on the whole believed him. And I think you had
local media supporting that. And I think you had local media going, not only were they vehemently
pro Murillo, but they were vehemently anti any story that came out that contradicted the Murillo
story. And that's where for me, things become a little bit fuzzy because it was like, not only
is the person writing this wrong yes but they're a bad person or they can't be trusted because
they're from this geographical era area it felt like a little bit and i get why you want to make
an us versus them climate but to to say that this was responsibly reported on i think is is
incorrect and i think a lot of fans because we're fan is short for fanatic if you're a fan and you
desperately want your team to to to stay well you're going to be like well i'm going to believe
the guys who are closest into the team i i think i think canadians uh you know created their
frankenstein monster like i think uh the reason a lot of coyotes fans rejected a lot of the
criticism of the coyotes is they had been facing unfair criticism from me included uh for years
like i you didn't you never criticized coyotes fans no but no no i used to like i am now of the
opinion that hockey will work in arizona it is a hockey place and the nhl has not done a good
enough job there i used to be part of the the gatekeeping little bit that was like no it's the
desert fans don't like hockey there what are we doing just get the team out of there right i've
changed my tone on that i like to think years and years ago um yes i walk off the set when they talk
about the freaking arena thing i don't want to talk about a land auction that's not why i got
into this and holy shit or like are we going to do this every time the amount of times we've had
to talk about city council meetings and elections with this theme oh oh it's not why anybody got
into this um you know i understand fans skepticism uh and uh even today people are being dicks about
it and they're and they're punching coyotes fans while they're down but the reason coyotes fans
didn't uh trust uh you know negative information about their team i think is one they've been
facing unfair criticism for a very long time and number two they wanted to believe this was
finally the ship writing and i have to say you know we've um covered this directly on this show
for 11 years from the outside you have to understand if you're a coyotes fan that this
always looked fishy from a non-fan perspective because i am not a coyotes family clearly a leafs
fan this guy this plan that kept changing the katie strang article that you mentioned you're
right and everything else that filtered out through over the years always felt fishy and i
think that's part of the disconnect is coyotes fans were like wait a second two weeks ago a week
ago we got a sizzle reel of what this complex is all going to look like and now you're leaving yes
and and you have to understand from our perspective we all kind of thought that's where this was going
to go and we hoped and we said this multiple times that we were wrong hope that we were wrong
but it it from the outside 31 other team fan bases were like you know we're wishing the best for the
fans here but i don't believe it and when it came to the on ice product we're like hey you know what
they bought this summer they still have all these draft picks they got this guy they got that guy
and then trade deadline rolls around and you see where their priorities really are
well and you and i need a building and i think no but i i think at the end of the day like like
listen people tried to sell us on the fact that mullet arena wasn't that bad i could i have
rasmus anderson coming out and saying no this is not a rasmus anderson from the flames this is not
an nhl rink and that's he said i have to be polite about this is not an nhl i couldn't believe the
pushback i could like like when that story first broke i i just couldn't wrap my head around
why anyone would defend a fewer than 5 000 seat arena being used for national hockey league games
that count i couldn't wrap my head around it and look where we are and and people took it as oh
you're punching down or you're like you you look at the dressing rooms these guys had you like
They've earned the right to be treated well.
Yes.
These are premier athletes, and they should have premier facilities.
And the NHL has finally taken the right move here and moved on for now.
I'm with you.
Arizona is going to be a great hockey market.
And the young Kachinas program and the Coyotes junior program, all really good.
The Tucson Roadrunners are still owned by the Murillo family.
But my question is this right now.
Coyotes fans are pissed with the Murillo family,
and they should be.
But the NHL has given them the keys.
So five years from now,
or any time within the next five years,
that building is built.
They get to reactivate the franchise
for the amount of money they just made off of it.
And that, for me, is a problem
because we've just spent the last half decade
doubting that these guys can do it at all.
They couldn't do it.
They can't do it.
And now we're going to give them five more years
to see if they can.
No, I got there should be zero faith that all of that comes to fruition because the way it's been outlined, there's like certain checkpoints.
They got a hit to build the arena and get the team back and then pay the billion dollars for the expansion fee and all that stuff.
And there should be zero trust that Alex Merlo can get this done.
I mean, this is a this is a franchise that was not paying its hotel bills, guys.
I told you on Friday, from what I've heard, the NHL had to step in and say you will pay.
And also all the hotel franchisees said, not only are you going to pay us back, but every time you stay at one of our hotels, you're paying by a certified check up front, a bank draft.
For those of you who have never gotten a bank draft, they always, they talk to you like you're a child when you get it, but they're like, this is money.
It's real money.
I know it's a one piece of paper.
This is money.
If you lose it, if it's a $5,000 bank draft and you lose it, you lost five grand.
Do not lose this.
Oh my God.
As long as we're talking about things that we've heard, there's a rumor going around that the Coyotes, for the last few months, their social media accounts were run by Alex Morello's kid.
No, they are.
It's not a rumor anymore.
He's the head of social.
Everybody knows that.
Look him up on LinkedIn.
It's very clearly on LinkedIn.
Yeah, I've looked him up.
He's been doing it.
No, he's the guy who heads up the marketing team.
You're joking.
No.
Alex Morello Jr.
Look him up.
That's not what I was going to say is I've heard conflicting reports about that.
well who do you think was in charge of the messaging even if he didn't write the tweets
himself who do you think was in charge of the messaging what did it did it did that did the
arizona coyotes twitter account scream senior experienced social media person to you because
it used to be did they it used to be the guy who ran vegas when they first started yeah but it's
not it's but then at some point they started it was like shit posting and you're like yeah what
is this this is like the blood like a some random reddit reddit what was the one with the like dead
coyote and no that was the dallas and then they posted something back to to the stars with a job
opening of their account and all that stuff it was it was clearly not run by a giant social media
team it was i thought the dallas stars post was inappropriate i thought the arizona coyotes one
was every bit as bad if not worse yeah doubling down on something some people would say like oh
and i heard a few people say this oh it's nice to see some nhl teams with some some uh uh personality
on twitter but i'm like i'm like listen this okay it's that's cool if you're anonymous shit poster
if you're billion dollar organization yeah yeah no i'm so over that what are we doing that like uh
shit posting team accounts and all that nonsense like it's it doesn't work let the fans shit post
yeah that was cool in 2018 or something but like so a week and a half ago i made a video for my
channel where i i drank the kool-aid of the arizona coyotes i believe a week and a half a
week and a half ago i truly with all of my heart believed that the land auction that was going to
go through and they would get the get the land to build the arena and like there's a path forward
and the reason i believed all that was because i chose to take the information that was delivered
to arizona coyotes fans as truth i i just chose to believe the reporting out of arizona and what
the team continually said over and over and over again i was like why is there any reason for me
not to believe this at this point because we reached the all-star break and what came out of
the all-star break was that that was supposed to be the deadline that was supposed to be the hard
and fast if you don't have an arena ready yet like you're done you're out of here and that came
and went and then there was a plan and i was like oh so we're cool it's all good and i was i was
hoodwinked i was i was completely jogged by a stray led astray by this organization because
behind the scenes alex alex morello is a snake oil salesman because what was happening we we know now
that in january that was truly the deadline for the nhl they said if by the new year you don't
have an arena then we're moving forward with ryan smithing seeing everything and a month ago ryan
smith the nhl gary betman alex morello uh mr gutierrez they all sat down and they said okay
how are we going to move this team that was before even the land auction stuff came out they were
already discussing moving the team to utah and how dare they come out knowing that behind the scenes
they're making this billion dollar deal to move the team and still tell us all and i believed it
when it came out that we're gonna buy this land and arizona's gonna be here forever this it
fucking sucks man the messaging we're fine we're fine we're fine we're fine we're better than fine
we're gone i that's how it went i'm like honestly i'm shocked like oh like when the when they came
down last week that oh yeah i was like genuinely shocked because the entire messaging i was like
yeah it's all there it's laid out here's your plan they they have the videos they have renderings
they have land it's all good and then they're gone we're fine what the hell is that we're better
than fine which was the land auction we're gone and the reason why i feel like a fool is because
there is 25 years of evidence that this team doesn't work i think i think um i think good
people are often optimists jesse and i think that's where your optimism came from and i think
that's where coyotes fans optimism came from they're good people and they were lied to they
were lied to over and over again for decades now and i'm i'm very happy that the nhl is finally
pulling the plug and frankly they're doing it too late this if this was what was going on this
entire time like you wasted everybody's time by going to mullet arena and even consider like
they should have never been in mullet i'm just completely out like you should have never been
in mullet arena this entire time go play in houston go play somewhere else put it in quebec
just put it somewhere and then find the market and the idea that within the next five years you
give this man back a franchise no no and that's the part that's that is the part that is the
scariest that's so that's what they're having to do so that he doesn't sue them into oblivion
so that this deal can get done they have to satisfy him in some way because he owns this
team and you cannot force him to sell this team without some sort of like agreement where there's
a benefit to him so they're giving him all of this stuff that says hey within the next five
that's not getting done yeah this man he can't keep the number one asset to have right now as
a billionaire across any industry is a pro sports team and the real estate with that comes with the
pro sports team and this man had it for two decades and couldn't make it a success he didn't
have it for two decades well he's only had it for half a decade for half it for sorry 2019 is when
he's had this team and i i'm and by the way the majority of the growth over the last two decades
has happened in the last five years when i say they've had it for two decades he's had it for
two decades the arizona market has had it for two decades yes and they have not been able to make it
work and morello himself has had it for now about five years and he hasn't been able to make it work
they can't do it i think it's interesting it's done you should look at uh chris johnson's put
an article out for um the athletic um matt dumba when he was in toronto uh cj talked to him and
and uh he called playing in arizona mental warfare um here's the first few lines sounds nice about a
month ago nhl commissioner gary bettman and his deputy bill daly paid a visit to the arizona
coyotes owner alex murillo murillo to broach the subject of relocation the initial reception
wasn't warm, according to a league source, as in Murillo wasn't warm. Murillo, who has owned the
franchise since 2019, was focused on winning a land auction, North Phoenix, to solve the
longstanding problem. And I'm going to skip ahead. But as a part of that conversation with the NHL
commissioner and deputy commissioner, Murillo was asked a question that ultimately set the wheels
in motion on a deal that is expected to see the Coyotes players and hockey operations staff move
to Salt Lake City by the end of this week.
Can you say with any certainty
when a permanent arena will be completed
to replace the temporary facilities at Mullet?
Murillo couldn't.
And by the way,
the frustrating thing about that
is he couldn't when they moved there
in the first place.
Nope.
He couldn't have two years ago.
That frustrates me.
Now, if you're upset about the cost
that he paid for the Coyotes
and the money he's walking away with,
I'll say this.
Jesse's right in the sense
that private equity money,
everybody's putting their money into sports franchises they are they are gaining a lot of
just straight up asset value it's not about making money year to year anymore it's just
about the growth of the asset you can lose money every year and still come out profitable which is
crazy and just it's actually it's better when they lose money because all of that's a tax right yeah
yeah not paying tax yeah and the more they spend it the more they lose is actually beneficial and
their assets still gaining in value when does anyone pay tax when people why do regular people
like holy because we're regular people we have no power when right when a um uh when a uh when
miralo bought the franchise for 300 million people are like well he's gonna make 700 million dollars
off this purchase no he's not uh the coyotes were purchased with a significant amount of debt
which he then overtook but even if it was 200 million dollars worth of debt he's still walking
away with 500 mil and i don't think for a second that this guy's following through on this and he
You can quote me and use me in your sizzle reel.
He's got a clean $500, $400 even.
Even if it's $300 million debt.
Even the coyotes were worth $300 and he assumed $300 million.
That's still a $400 million check.
Bang.
Clean money.
You give me 1% of that, I'll never talk about the coyotes ever again.
That's the deal I'm making for you, Al.
So my point here is that he's made significant money.
And he can go and he can go after this land auction and take the risk that, you know,
all the money all the risk all the time to reactivate a franchise within half a decade
or and jesse i think you're right on this he can just walk away go do something give up the you
know let the rights expire and in 2030 we get the arizona coyotes back under a real owner sell the
roadrunners too well i'm sure that's what he would do he would sell them to the next two there's some
more fun right now there's a bunch of logistics that are like they're luring or lawyer lawyering
up to figure out what goes
on with that AHL franchise because
they need one, but Morello's going to maintain
those rights. And they're moving to Mullet, by the
way. Yeah, so that's the idea that
they move them to Mullet because they still have a lease in Mullet
so then we get a team in there. So Tucson
will not have... Tuscany goes to
Arizona.
Tucson will not have likely
a team next year. So Tucson's
losing a team too. Yeah.
And they are a really well-attended team.
Lots of people. If I'm the
31 other...
well now 32 actual owners and morello's like okay i'm ready to get back into the club in the next
five years my whole thing is figuring out how that doesn't happen there's like no shot true
this man doesn't deserve an nhl franchise and if i'm a fan of the arizona coyotes right now
i don't want him owning my team yeah are you kidding every time i buy a shirt a ticket a hot
dog anything i'm giving you money fuck you the saddest thing i think on top of all of this is
the fact that ryan smith is gonna put a whole bunch of money into this team because that's what
all new owners do they love their new toy and they go spend like crazy he's gonna go out and like get
stephen stamkos put him on the first line make this team awesome you know me draft picks they
have coming up oh yeah you know me young stars they i mentioned logan cooley and dylan genther
and our tim hortons at like those two guys are gonna be so good in utah and arizona fans are
just gonna be just depressed watching them become stars and that sucks i'm also like they keep
saying and maybe i've misunderstood this he's he gets to reactivate the coyotes franchise yeah so
it's the branding the the coyotes themselves are like the idea of the franchise is staying
in arizona it's not like arizona going to winnipeg yeah sorry is an entirely different
they're going to be an expansion franchise that purchased the hockey operations of the arizona
coyotes so their expansion even though the number of teams is staying the same yes because the nhl
is technically retracting so no the nhl is making one team inactive and expanding to one so one is
minus one so they're staying even one is minus one is plus and the arizona coyotes themselves
will stay as a franchise in arizona and all of their history and all that stuff so it's not like
um their history shane doan is is the is a member of the utah yeah dale howard chuck is not the
second all-time scorer for the coyote so all of a sudden history staying where it was made is
important yeah it's stupid oh like all of a sudden it's very it's very all of a sudden you
understand what we've been talking about the entire time yes oh very interesting yeah howard
chuck steen uh paul mcclain some of these guys they all should be winnipeg jets numbers they
should not be coyotes numbers they are now inactive in arizona here i i i got an idea alex
sell the shit to winnipeg that'd be nice go call up the group sell them all the banners sell them
all that you're only in this for the money sell all the shit to winnipeg go call up true north
sell it another reason why and i want to say this before we go to press conference
another reason why i'm concerned about murello continuing this franchise although i don't think
it's likely to happen i'm sure there's some proviso in there that the the rights uh with
nhl approval can be sold off to a new owner and that's what i think is going to happen me too uh
i i wonder again if they go back to maddie spia and say like listen man please uh we'll give you
a really good deal please the reason why that makes a lot of sense now is because there's a
runway for the arena to fix up so they just did the they just did some renovations to where the
sun's playing all that stuff and it's not made for hockey but now that you got a five-year runway or
even it's 10 years like it doesn't have to be within that five-year window anymore go figure
out the arena so it's solid and then bring it in and if ishbia wants to do that like now there's
runway by the team with kevin durant but my point is my initial point was going to be this is the
the way i led this segment was a with a crisis pr firm whose job is literally to protect your
brand through a crisis and even their that's their former client and even that guy david
leibowitz is like these guys are brutal and so how many how many business related relationships
have these guys fractured within the Arizona Scottsdale area
that will never do business with this person
as long as he owns the franchise.
Government as well.
That's what I'm talking about.
Business is government, right?
Yeah.
Not just government,
but you're talking about small mom and pop shops
that did promotions,
hotels that didn't get paid,
whatever else that you want to talk about,
who is going to want to do business with this person
if you really dive deep?
You don't even have to dive that deep.
And so I think long-term,
this guy is not involved.
um and i would say that you know ishbia gets a i that's my bet because he's he's a basketball guy
but i think he understands what value hockey could bring plus it fills more nights at his arena which
is a good thing too and i think that the coyotes should be in phoenix that's what they should do
they should be in phoenix they got to be in the big area they should be a draw how many arenas
you're really gonna build i know why do you need to like you don't need to like you don't and and
And so all that is to say, I know that the – I have real concerns,
and this is a Gary Bettman legacy play.
Make no mistake, he's got three years left on his deal after this season,
Gary Bettman.
Why?
When did he get the extension?
He got it during the Kyle Beach saga.
Gary Bettman's got three years left, okay?
The Coyotes will be, if he leaves at the end of these three years,
and I don't think he will, the biggest blight on his record.
No, I don't think Gary's going anywhere.
I think Gary's in this till he's dead.
Gary is, this is his big magnum opus is this franchise.
His biggest win and the reason that the NHL is able to expand so quickly is because of the salary cap.
The salary cap appeals to billionaires because they're like, I got fixed costs.
In the MLB, the cost structures are so out of whack sometimes that these guys are like, you end up with like an Oakland athletic situation.
You end up with a Florida Marlins situation, right?
um the nfl yeah the cap is extremely complicated in the nfl there's flexibility then there's dead
cap and there's this and there's that and it's very expensive to buy and by the way none of
those franchises are for sale anyway you can't get in um the nba same thing they got a luxury tax
and nobody's selling didn't snoop dogg try to buy the sins sure yeah someone's gonna want this name
well he tried to buy the sins with a guy that they never quite verified that he had the money
oh well um so uh there were like 800 other celebrities yeah exactly it was weird um point
being someone wanted to buy the sense right and i think i think at this in this particular instance
it's going to be well worth it for murella who's already walking away if at the lowest end probably
three four hundred million clean probably more to sell these rights to somebody else so he can
walk away with double that because those rights by the way if they're worth if expansion is worth
close to two billion is what they're expecting a houston or an atlanta to look like two billion
dollars if that's what it is and that's low in sports terms then what do you think the reactivation
fee for the coyotes is worth so right now they're locking it in for morello himself at one billion
dollars no matter how much the expansion fees go up in the next five years his reactivation fee
will be a billion dollars and i think if i'm the nhl and i assume they got their smart lawyers
involved the one thing i'll fight for is that you are not able to sell the the rights and i assume
he's gonna fight for that and if somebody else wants to have a team in arizona and you fail
they're gonna want their expansion fee and right so i assume he has to be able to sell those rights
i assume gary's gonna fight to say no these rights only apply to you if somebody else wants to come
in they gotta come to us and pay the two billion dollars wow you know but i'm just i'm just trying
no you're probably right negotiations are gonna go probably right so but it's the monorail the
last half decade it's been the monorail episode of the simpsons yes a hundred percent yeah a hundred
percent i've been to brockway ogdenville north haverbrook and by gum and put them on the map
i've been to mullet arena tempe and north phoenix hey what about gila gila river yeah if one one
person deserves a huge raise out of this and it's the graphic designer um who made all these
renderings and everything and convinced people that they were going to build fucking anything
it worked i'm telling you it did um the one thing i think is fascinating is the land auction i think
it's still fascinating because if he goes through with the land auction and builds the arena then i
can see him reactivating the franchise and then selling it you know like here's the arena and
everything the franchise is more valuable i make even more money off of this but if he just says
fuck it i'm not going through the land auction then everything's out the window for five years
yeah it's already over yep yep what a what a it's just a catastrophe it's a great way to describe it
and uh last thing like if you saw their statement that they released on their twitter account over
the weekend which was a screen grab of a microsoft word document because you could still see the
cursor in it yeah so their statement nowhere in their statement did it say that they're committed
to keeping arizona hockey in arizona and the message three days before that if you scroll
down on the twitter account is we're staying and we're here and all of a sudden it's gone because
they're fucking snake oil salesman um you can't you can't even get the message right just shout
it across the kitchen table uh what's the oh andre tourney who's the uh head coach of the um
arizona coyotes demanded demanded from management that they address them before the game against
edmonton on saturday night that's how bad this is like these guys and and funnily enough um once
the management i think it was bill armstrong who had to come in who also has no say in any of this
right he's just a general manager he's hockey ops uh and bill also has to now move to utah
like all they all the all the hockey ops people found out on twitter on saturday night after
addressing the room that they were moving to utah and they found out via twitter they did not find
out from the organization sorry guys um i guess yeah we're retaining you and some of the other
staff are still not aware of whether or not they're going to be retained we just spent 20
minutes ranting about you know how wrong they did their fans do the team yeah now if i were going to
work for smith entertainment group i'd be excited especially if i'm a long-time coyotes like worker
it's like this is going to be so much better we don't know though what um like amount of the
hockey operations that ryan smith is just gonna pick up yep like if you work in marketing or sales
for the local the arizona and you're a local salesman that does team sales for the rink boards
you don't know if he's gonna retain you to pick you up and move to utah or if you even want to do
that like it's tough there's so many people involved here like like this is the thing adam
i think you're right to be optimistic about ryan smith as an owner and you know if you're willing
to move you should be excited what if i'm not what okay he's a great owner but he's over there
i live here oh yeah there's gonna be lots of people who are out of work my kids are in school
in arizona i'm not taking them or my job or i'm in sales and my relationships are arizona only
exactly what use could i possibly be in salt lake says no i'm gonna build my own just hockey
department and and of course if you combine he's already got the relationships because of the jazz
i hope i hope the coyotes players rent oh yeah i think you you i mean like dumb but right you
you probably rent out your your place if you own it i guess to be to be honest like i think the
least concerning for like everybody in this whole thing is the players yeah i think they're used to
moving and all the stuff it's like you got traded and they're they're paid well they're paid well
i think i like and they're getting us they're getting a stipend to move right my mind goes to
the staff yes people like in marketing and sales and all that stuff and the fans and all those
people it's also and then eventually you get to the players yeah it sucks for the players yeah
it's also lost opportunities for um you know for people making their way up in hockey because
oftentimes if you want to work for a big club like new york or toronto whatever um you're starting
at clubs that aren't necessarily the big clubs and uh you know not that not that smith
entertainment group won't offer some of those things but because they already exist as the jazz
the Coyotes franchise will be folded into that.
And a lot of those opportunities won't expand, right?
It's just, it is what it is.
So tough situation.
I do feel for Coyotes fans.
I really, really do.
And I really hope that Gary gets this Arizona thing
sorted out before he ultimately retires
or kicks the bucket,
because frankly, it will be the thing.
Salary cap, that's fine.
If Gary Bettman retires
and there's no hockey in Arizona,
this is what he's going to be remembered for.

Reeves-Kampf-Doer
So Nyes
Yeah, Nyes I think makes the most sense
He was a real factor in the playoffs last year
He was great
He certainly was
Their playoff chances died with his injury
Yep
That's what I would do
first question comes from jazz jackrabbit jazz writes is it just me or is nobody talking about
patrick kane season 20 goals 26 assists for 46 points in 48 games so many people were doubtful
he could be anywhere near this level after his hip surgery but he's defied the odds uh i would say
you haven't been in the right pockets of hockey twitter or the right pockets of the hockey
internet um no he's having a stupendous year i think part of that is the standard for him is so
much higher but you're right like you know the thing i kept ranting about is there was no real
evidence that players came back from the procedure that he got done and have a meaningful impact in
the nhl he has he might drag this team to a playoff spot um he got an assist on the ot winner
the other night to keep him alive um it's very interesting um still feels like his career might
be on borrowed time but for the for the meantime he's he's still incredible adam do you have any
thoughts on patrick kane i mean i think the i think the the big story that i keep seeing is
detroit fans going is he going to stay stay here and he's been very um he's been very non-committal
to that which is interesting and i don't know without him how they're going to replace him
like i don't think there's an easy solve on that for as much as he's not patrick kane mvp uh he's
still very very good player and has brought a lot to that lineup and i wonder um you know is he
playing money games or is he or is there genuine concern that he might go somewhere else uh why
would you commit if you're him well because you got a good thing going in detroit you know uh yeah
Yeah, but if I'm him, I have the confidence that I'll have a good thing going anywhere.
Well, and I think he probably wants to make more than what he's making.
I think he's probably wanting to make in the fours and fives, millions, and now, right?
Because if he's a player scoring at that rate, he's come back from a brutal injury.
He's not a million-dollar player.
This is a four or five, at least, million-dollar player.
Okay, well, here, let me make this real easy.
What do you do?
Andre Vasilevsky wears 88, so he's going to the Panthers.
You think he's going to Florida?
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
Is there a really good free agent available you don't want in your division?
Guess what?
It's going to Florida.
It's going to Florida.
Adam, this is a question for you.
Okay.
And it's from somebody named Adam.
Adam P-Man on our Discord.
That's what Leo calls you, by the way.
P-Man?
Adam P-Man.
Adam says the playoffs should be expanded to bring in more revenue for his billionaire owner friend.
That's right.
One, how would you build the playoff brackets?
two would reducing the preseason and starting the season slash playoffs early yes suffice yes or
would that be way too hard on the player's body not long enough of a break so so i think that's
a really interesting point because people people are correct in saying that the season's long and
so are the playoffs uh what we forget is how long the preseason is and how stupid it is uh the
leafs play eight preseason games and why do they do they've played more why do they play eight
preseason games uh i i assume because that's right because they sell them out yep do you know
how much it cost me to go to a preseason game six years ago at rico coliseum before it was
coca-cola coliseum is that the game that patrick marlo played i have no idea we all sat there
going why no i wasn't there when rico coliseum i wasn't there with you oh i was there uh how
much out a hundred dollars holy shit for how many tickets a hundred dollars per ticket holy shit
now not only you're a dumbass for doing that i know but what i was like i was in my late 20s
whatever like i don't care i was like i have i have 100 bucks i'm going to a game oh my um so
uh and that was really stupid but you know what there's lots of people just like me who are so
dying to see the leafs in person that you're like you know what fuck it i'll i'm doing it because i
can't afford a regular season game here's what you do the leafs the reason they play eight is
not to sort out their lineup they know what their lineup is like two weeks in they're doing it
So that they get four extra home games that are sold out and their opponents who they go play the back-to-back with the Ottawa's, the Montreal's, uh, who else sometimes Pittsburgh's in the rookie tournament, whoever they play in the preseason, they also get a sellout because of the Leafs.
So there's a business case to be made for this. And so what I would say is start the NHL, October 1st, start, uh, start a training camp, September 1st or whatever the first day after Labor Day is.
okay and and you get four four preseason games so it matters four okay then you start the playoffs
april 1st yeah man and like we'd be we'd be two weeks in right now and here's what you do okay
the good teams the the top 16 they get they're in you add two teams in the east two teams in the
west and they get the spotlight for a week and they play seven they play a best of five fuck
that game seven starts at game seven starts at game seven actually i don't know if you could
do that mathematically you'd have to do 24 so you'd have to two separate two you'd have to do
two east two west two series and i think you do best of five the way that the first round in the
nhl used to be the first round in the nhl if you've done your homework used to be best of five
and so you so everybody else gets a buy these here's what kills me about the nhl system currently
we call these teams wildcard teams what's wild about them what's wild card about them they play
the same they're no they're the seventh and the eighth seeds there's nothing wild about that card
it's just non-division there's no card there's nothing wild non-division is not wild wild is
going here you go best of three and by the way you want to make it even wilder when you go to
overtime it's three on three oh wow now you're getting fun let's get fun with it and and this
is where like you get like the the hilarity of of covid made things kind of interesting because you
had stupid teams like montreal all of a sudden and chicago going on a tear in chicago and vancouver
teams that were not going to make it the 23 and 24 seed in the nhl made the playoffs in 2020 and
if you think that's ridiculous remember that in the 80s when gretzky and lemieux were playing
there was 21 teams 16 made it you could be like yeah sixth last in the league and still the leafs
regularly made the playoffs with the sub 500 and nobody bitched nobody complained i think you if
you're gonna use the wild card thing make it a wild card make it something that's like holy
shit somebody just threw a joke one of one i i think one of one none of this best of five crap
one one game one one game would be sick one i like that i like that oh no actually you have
a home and home so that hockey fans get to learn about aggregate which is the stupidest thing in
all of sports by the way wow doesn't like aggregate dude there are some like listen
there are things about soccer that i inherently are better in it yes that is stupid is fucking
really stupid soccer i think has the two two of one of two of some of the worst rules in pro sports
uh one is the agria you nailed it and two is penalty kicks yeah boo the ending uh the world
cup on penalty what did it end in oh penalty kicks again cool no way just play until someone
collapses and you know what's funny about that is a sport that is enormous everywhere else except
for here doesn't have that they play until it's done and that's cricket and there's hundreds of
millions of fans and billions of dollars uh those guys are able to just play until they're fucking
dead now i know it's a lot less physical in terms of like constant running but man seeing a bunch of
gas superstars on the pitch would be fun and i didn't hear no bill the only argument i hear from
soccer fans about why penalty kicks are good is tradition yes like that's how it's always been
Oh, so it's bad.
You know what?
We should all go back.
That's conceding defeat.
Well, it's always been that way.
Oh, you lose.
Immediately.
I think it's ridiculous.
Like, I would even accept take away players, you know, or add players or do something.
Just play the game of soccer and not penalty kick.
Yeah, I think if, listen, if tradition mattered, we'd all still be driving Model Ts.
Like, you got to move on at some point, right?
That's why I'm late.
It's not the same thing.
That's why I'm late, Jesse.
It's the same thing.
That's what we've always driven.
So we must continue to drive it.
What other questions do we have?
Are we wrapping?
I think that's it.
All right, let's wrap it up.
Oh, last thing.
Happy birthday, Adam.
Adam Wilde's birthday was on Saturday.
