That's right. It's crazy. We'll get into it. But first, I had to talk about this a couple of times on the streams this weekend. Jesse, I don't know if you did, but the Major League Hockey retraction. Oh, and Saudi Steve over here. Surprisingly, on Saturday during the Hurricanes Rangers stream, nobody really brought it up. You know, accepting money. By the way, I'm not sure how we jumped to that conclusion,

but Steve actually wanted to break a story. and people were like he got paid for that right no he didn't here's the funny no i was literally he got burned by a source and didn't get paid for it yeah no it was the uh worst of of every world it went this all would have been cool if you came in today with a rolex and you got a ferrari and maybe a helicopter flew your ferrari here and we're like damn steve that's crazy you made billions off of that fake story but no you just got screwed yeah yep it happens by the way there's a retraction section in every newspaper it happens uh there are some information that came to light after the story came out that uh draws the whole thing into questionable status

we'll leave it at that uh i can walk you through it briefly yeah yeah yeah no i want to hear the whole story from when you decided to be like i'm gonna go ahead and beat everybody to this story and i don't know how much you can tell how much you want but i want to know from when you decided i'm gonna be i'm gonna enter this game of the insider game i'm gonna break news and then to when you had to be like i put my foot too deep in that water sure uh six weeks ago early april very early April, uh, newborn run, you know, houses in chaos. I texted someone who I had known for a decade and, um, about something completely unrelated, completely unrelated, asking them a question, completely unrelated. I wasn't even trying to find out information for myself.

A friend of mine had asked me a question and I was like, well, this person would know. So I texted them in that conversation they go hey also something really interesting and they proceed to tell me about major league hockey and they get enough details into it uh where i just go why are you telling me this like it was it's a wild story under the um uh if it's assumption it's true yeah so anyway big assumption yeah by the way i wouldn't friday was humiliating so anyway let's let's tell the whole story and then we get friday so six weeks continue to gather information and uh the the day i decided um i had enough was i saw their website um it's not publicly available and i've seen it and and just off the top to clarify for people this was somebody you

knew for 10 years 10 years not a random instagram dm not an email from some guy who said he's a prince no this is a person i know you know i have met them in person um yeah so i thought i had enough details i was literally just reporting a story i wasn't paid by anybody um it you know sort of made me go okay why did people jump to that conclusion um because i guess i'm not really an insider and uh don't worry i know now um but uh yeah so i broke the story and that night a bunch of people tweeted publicly and reached out to me privately and they went damn i heard of that too and good on you for being first the next day it continued good on you players started reaching out players who i've spoken to in the past players who i haven't spoken to in the past uh but like

some that i knew it was like oh like it's it's weird um when someone you've never met but you know a very well just pops up in your dms and they're asking you for more details and then uh after we had already recorded a show where we talked about it uh i started getting a couple phone calls going uh i don't know about all this and uh i i can't get into too much detail but basically there's a lot of skepticism about the money backing this not the origins of the money it is the existence of the money right so i am punching out of this godforsaken story yeah i very much regret ever talking about it ever and would like to listen i could have just doesn't regret the paycheck and i see jesse

Oh, you son of a bitch. I could have just left it, and it would have been the wrong thing to do is leave it. And a bunch of people are like, just let it die, just let it die. I'm like, no, I have to say, listen, I found some new information. So there is a reporter who is tracking this thing, and they have an article on it, and it's good and not stupid. so uh his name is brad elliot schlossman and he tweeted the following with a link to his work in the grand forks herald.com max chambers pops up every few years as an apparent big money man in hockey but the money has never been there now he's offering people hockey jobs for what he says

is a 10 billion dollar pro league but it doesn't appear to exist story um and then it links to the story jesse has it up right now i contacted brad uh last night and uh yeah please please follow him for any more information on the alleged league known as major league hockey would you call uh him a reporter uh brad yeah uh much more than i am listen i think there's an excitement of like oh i got something i got uh by the way this max chambers there's a dave schultz article from 2011 uh in the globe and mail potential st louis blues owner is a true man of mystery and he goes into the fact that they can't figure out how this person made their money but it yeah brad references that in his article oh he does okay yeah so anyway long story short it happens yeah i've had a great

weekend everyone the amount of great amount of the amount of like pearl clutching though on on the friday thing like how could you not have mentioned this in the show and it's like well dude we record the show dude no the timing of the show it came out like the release came out after your retraction but the recording happened before your new information it's just unfortunate timing for us we didn't do a re-record because you're already back in ajax so well no even worse i got all these phone calls hey the show you just recorded maybe don't while on the packed dawn valley parkway on the way home it was not a great feeling so yeah follow brad i'm punching out done what's the next what's the next story you're gonna break uh none manel

that's great, let someone else break it. That's on you. That's great I don't want it anymore What was the final question if you're okay with the answer So on the Thursday you released the video where you break the news what was the reason

that you got the thumbs up to go with the story that day when they when the league itself had no official announcement why did you feel confident because you knew about the story for like six weeks why on that thursday was like okay i'm going to talk about this publicly um i i had gotten some more information and also i you know everything from the website matched everything that i had been told um and you know what's funny is uh that website by the way that i've seen and recorded because I'm not stupid

no longer exists so lots of questions that I hope people smarter than me ask and can get answers to the greatest mystery of our time is not

is not if the league exists it's not when the league will come out and through the self how much money I got from the Saudis no no that's the best part It's like, oh, but by the way, I just want to throw out there. What a jump from Steve broke a story to the Saudis must be funding his lifestyle.

Like, where did that come from? But I drove here in a Mazda. The greatest mystery of all time is how this morning Nikita Zdorov has a $5,000 fine. Carson Soucy is going to be dragged in front of player safety in a hearing. But Sam Bennett is cool. Oh, okay. That's cool. like we're good with that so all i've had uh to do this weekend while uh uh not reading my mentions

at all at all um is watch so much hockey and i've watched so much of the second round and can i just say with my whole chest watching the second round that the leafs are not in holy fuck is this league a joke this league is such a joke the officiating in the second round in one two three four series is atrocious i'm bored of the conversation though i think these teams got to be prepared for it this is how it always is no and and by the way i just wholeheartedly i'm actually bored like i'm not gonna change this they're not gonna change this so just so you so you win anyway i'm no no i think that's no no completely disagree straight up i want gary's gone it isn't changing no so i don't know what you want to do about it i think

i think when sam bennett punches a man in his face with a stick i think when connor mcdavid gets cross-checked in the face you should talk about that and you should complain until maybe there's going to be change getting a high stick on the cheek he's bleeding and the refs are like no that's okay yeah i think that's also bad who got who got um hitting the nuts with the stick oh i missed that on the fly by in the edmonton vancouver game you're streaming that yeah i must i must have missed yes no i know exactly what play you're talking about game two um there's a lot that happened in game two yeah sam bennett punching a guy in the face on the fly throwing a guy on top of cross-checking a guy on top of the goalie and then scoring a goal having that

goal challenged and it's fine and yeah okay you know who got a penalty for that the bruins yeah because they challenged and they were incorrect that's two minutes good lord yeah good lord um i know some stuff happened in dallas colorado um but like i don't know if it was less egregious less egregious um meanwhile you get a ref grabbing and finger in the face accosting matt rempe because they've decided he's the guy who is held accountable for some reason matt rempe hasn't played in a couple games so that that was a little while ago but yes yeah i know it's a little while ago but like i'm talking about it as a whole um the officiating has been so so fucking bad and if the nhl wants to make it up to us they don't i know they don't they have

to make and they'll never do this but it's just something that i want they have to make the phone call the hearing for carson susie available publicly because i want to hear susie and his representatives and the vancouver canucks management we haven't even talked about the fact that Don Sweeney's talking today well I want to hear from Carson Soucy's mouth and his representatives and Canucks management the reason Soucy cross-checked McDavid in the face is he only meant to cross-check him in the chest sure looked like it was going towards the neck but Zdorov cross-checked him in the uh lumbar spine causing McDavid to buckle and that's the only reason he got hit in the face i think people aren't gonna like this comparison but i don't think he should

get any less games than morgan riley it's the playoff it's if you want to do the playoff tax according to the nhl and not officially but according to them uh playoff games are worth double than regular season games yeah so if that is the case and that's the rule we got to go by then it should be three games morgan got six it's a cross check after the whistle to a guy's face in a case where the guy did not mean to hit him in the face morgan didn't mean to hit really greg in the face with his cross check he needed to do in the shoulder it kind of rode up and he hit him right in the face the same in this instance suzy did not mean to hit mcdavid in the face mcdavid got pushed and then the cross check went to the face it also happened after the end of the game

which is the same thing that happened with Morgan Riley. It is a godless ball of rhyme. Morgan Riley chased Ridley Grigg down. Connor McDavid got a little shove from Susie and then two-handed him across the leg and then started a scrum, right? The two of them started a scrum. I'm not saying that McDavid initially.

No, no, no. A scrum is punches. Susie was going to cross-check him the whole time. You can't compare Morgan Riley to this. No, no, I wouldn't. Morgan Riley came up behind Ridley Grigg and cross-checked him in the head. It's different.

McDavid and Soucy are looking at each other in the eye. McDavid can go F off, slash him, skate away. Zdorov obviously changes that. I understand that. But do I think that Soucy could get a game here? Absolutely. NHL needs to protect him. A game!

I think it should be three. I think it should be three games. If Petrangelo got one game, was it last year? No, but I don't think Petrangelo's suspension was correct either. I agree, but I'm just telling you what he's going to get. I think I think it should be three games because and I'm in the business of protecting superstars as well. The NHL does a poor job of and like this isn't to say that there weren't penalties against the Edmonton Oilers on Canucks players. I think the Oilers in the games have been egregiously taking advantage of the rules as well.

But in this specific instance, McDavid here should be protected. And I think that three games is enough for Susie here. I want to illustrate a point here. I know there are fewer teams in the playoffs right now. There's only eight. But there were 16. There were a lot of games. During the regular season, there are 32.

Do you want to see how abruptly and violently this standard changes for the Department of Player Safety? So there were 16 days. We pointed this out. There's been one fine in the NHL so far these playoffs before Zdorov. uh michael mccarron in the uh in the preds canucks series oh the canucks they just keep getting into trouble you know no it was goaltender interference um he hit one of the canucks goalies i don't remember which one because they've used three 16 days between uh discipline i just arbitrarily went to the department of player safety's twitter okay

uh january 27th jacob truba will have a hearing uh january 27th jacob truba suspended for two games january 28th there's something february 7th whoa whoa it's like a little over a week then there's february 7th february 8th february 10th february 10th february 11th february 11th february 11th those are all pertaining to morgan riley by the way and then he was suspended february 13th yeah there's something on february 14th february 16th february 18th february 21st february 25th like what's what's the longest gap we've had it was nine days followed by like it's a little unfair to compare a situation where there can be 16 games a night to a situation where there's two i know but dude dude march 1st march 5th march 6th march 8th march 8th march 8th march

8th jesus christ what happened on march 8th march 8th uh march 12th happy birthday to me march 12th march 17th okay march 18th we get it we get it and then there was a big gap we get it yeah no because you're allowed to do whatever the fuck you want the second the playoffs start but when is this but what i have to ask is what's different what do you mean what's different what's different this year to any other year no i know here's here's so i'm glad you're asking this question what's different this year to last and uh it piggybacks off a question that a friend asked me earlier today is this the worst officiating has ever been no absolutely not and what is different between this year and last year dude is 2024 that's enough holy fuck let's have some pride

here there are we see 10 different angles in 4k we have too many experts too many angles to we just have too much shit to be this poor right like back in the day when the nhl was chain link fences that you could just drag someone's face across and call it a tuesday and there weren't replays and some of the games weren't even televised and you know people are like we're talking about like war vets literally going to ice war uh after coming home like i understand um that then time passes and again i'll refer to brian burke's book burke's law he talks about having to record games on vhs tape this is the 90s right like this is alarmingly recently having to record vhs tapes and if there were a certain amount of games that night they

wouldn't have enough vcrs to record all the game that's right right it's we have too much information we have too much sam bennett like oh you know that's just a hockey play fuck you no it wasn't you flew into a hit and punched a falcon punched a guy and i know it's brad Marchand and it couldn't have happened to a nicer human being but it's illegal what you did the captain of the Bruins all right like you don't have to like either of those teams you don't have to like Brad Marchand look at it objectively for a second you have the captain of the Bruins one of their most valuable players Sam Bennett careens into him and the argument is well Marchand is going to hit him. Marchand is going to make body contact with Sam Bennett in a way that happens

100 times a game, especially in the playoffs. The puck is gone. It's a little longer than one Mississippi since the puck is gone and the two players collide and they get a piece of each other and they continue in the play. Happens all the time. What doesn't happen all the time is someone flies in and punches their opponent in the fucking head and he's done it in back-to-back playoffs he did it to matthew nize last year we were all talking about the him slamming uh nize's head into the ice which he did which is also not a penalty charlie mcavoy on austin matthews apparently apparently and what happened before that is he flew into a hit with matthew nize nize is flying into his hit like a hockey player and sam bennett flies into it like a fucking

psychopath and here's the problem the nhl is not going to change to get back to answering your question adam until it acknowledges the fact that hockey's a sport the way the nhl operates is so uh um against sporting that it's completely lost itself well it's a hard game it's a tough game oh fuck you hockey so arrogant in that way so is rugby so is football so is basketball uh it's just in a completely different way don't watch joelle mb highlights oh my god that guy's a disgrace but every sport has a little bit of contact and there are sports far more violent than hockey hockey is the only sport out of those contact sports to be so up its own ass to be like oh yeah it's it's a hard game oh um we sell violence you know what forget the puck forget

the nets forget the goalies just beat the shit out of each other and whoever is the final man standing wins go back to the coliseum dude it's a sport puck goes in the net the team that does that more wins the game that's hockey but no no we it's a completely different thing it's a completely different thing especially when the playoffs arrive everything goes except when they don't during the regular season we complain about the stuff uh that isn't called during the playoffs we complain about the stuff that is and the stuff that is called makes the stuff that isn't nonsense complete fucking nonsense zadorov got fined for a cross check on connor mcdavid and it's the only fine for a cross-check we've seen in these playoffs now susie's probably going

to get suspended but it's the only fine that we've seen so far in these playoffs is that the worst cross-check we've seen so far no in these playoffs round and a half i don't think so fuck no so what are we doing here what are we doing here and by the way my little thank god i get to talk about something else my little theory my idea that I've had for several years is looking more and more logical in a playoff series you do some bullshit after the final horn especially it carries over to the next game what are Carson Soucy and Nikita Zdorov trying to do other than intentionally injure Edmonton's best player that's what they're trying to do and it wouldn't matter if McDavid was their worst player, but he's

not, is he? He's Conor McDavid. Susie and Zdorov tried to break him in half, and I'm so happy. Like, oh, you know, Adam, you know, what's changed? What's changed is apparently this is a gentler NHL, because

back in the day, back in the three years ago, 2021 day, you used to be able to try to break a guy in half with two crosschecks at the same time. It's called Joel Edmondson and Ben Sherratt on Wayne Simmons and they got fucking nothing nothing but finally these playoffs have been so wildly out of control that this incident happens and everyone puts their foot down George Peros and the NHL are about to have a terrible day and I'm so glad I want to

send Don Sweeney flowers because he's having this press conference I hope he doesn't cancel it like Brad Treliving did remember that shit I do remember that Brad Treliving was gonna have a press conference after the Morgan Riley want Brad didn't want the referees to take it out on the team for the rest of the year that's why Brad would have canceled that press conference well I'm pretty sure they're taking it out on the Bruins that's what that's what um uh that's what happened last year with Matt Nyes and they're not Matt Nyes geez um Michael Bunting and so they just did oh they didn't want to have another situation where you call the refs out disgrace and the refs come back at you and they will disgrace and so here's by the way by the way here we go i'm not

done anybody contact with the ref they're gonna take it out on you dan kelly who is a linesman shoved michael bunting more than once and for the rest of the year it was fuck michael bunting season they spent the rest of the season fucking that poor guy absolutely fucking the guy and now he's on the hurricanes and now he's on the penguins and i guess they've forgotten to fuck him um but for the rest of the season fuck him brad marshand this was during the leaf series and people went oh anything anything and it went away he shoved a linesman or i don't remember if it was a linesman or a ref brad marshand shoved a linesman he shoved an official he shoved a guy wearing black and white and then he just went on the bench and nothing happened and i'm sorry i

I watched Game 4 last night, and you can't tell me there wasn't a little bit to that. And the Bennett goal counting is nonsense. And people who have worked for NHL teams came out and said that last night. Can we pull that up, Jesse? Can we pull the Bennett goal up? The goalie interference? Yeah, we can. No, Jesse's got Quinn Hughes up.

Oh. Yeah, hold on. We'll get to Quinn Hughes in a minute. Sorry, sorry. Which officiating atrocity do you want to talk about first? Okay. It's not a sports league. It's the NHL.

nhl it's hockey and they have forgotten hockey's a sport and they resent it they resent that hockey is a sport the nhl sells a product called the nhl but these playoffs it has not been hockey here we go go ahead which one's this hold on hold on which which which bit of bullshit is this i gotta play it although yeah so now and so just to set this up sure go ahead it's a 2-1 game uh and it's a very uh it's a very very tight game boston was two nothing boston boston had a really good first period they get two goals panthers claw back one and this is the second goal and this is the goal that ties the game look at jeremy swayman he is deep in his crease but the puck is in and around you've got charlie coil you've got sam bennett and sam bennett you'll see

pushes charlie coil into jeremy swayman here's what he does gets the puck off of swayman's right foot comes right to his stick and he's able to put it in the net now this was ruled a goal the bruins challenge it continued to be ruled a goal as a not goaltender interference and the Bruins were punished for it so it's paused right there on the push that Bennett has on Coyle the argument from the people inside the game who agree with the call is that Coyle put himself in the blue crease and once you're in the blue crease uh you're it's your own fault if you're interfering with your goalie plus he went down a little easy I don't agree with either of those assessments I think it should just be point blank as rule 69 in the NHL rule book establishes it if somebody

is pushed into the goaltender that is goaltender interference it shouldn't it shouldn't matter whether or not soyman had the ability to save the puck whether or not coils in his place i think it's just goaltender interference point blank based on how the rule is you heard him you heard the nhl folks you see a guy in the blue paint hit him in the dick that's it's your job if you're not doing what's allowed then you're not doing your job hit him in the dick so here's alan walsh tweeting the actual godforsaken rulebook of the nhl if a defending player has been pushed shoved or fouled by an attacking player so as to just just to establish charlie coyle is a defending player here sam bennett is an attacking player okay great now that we know that if a defending player has

been pushed shoved or fouled by an attacking player so as to cause the defending player to come into contact with his own goalkeeper such contact shall be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player for purposes of this rule and if necessary a penalty assessed to the attacking player and if a goal is scored it would be disallowed the bruins got a penalty out of this and a goal was allowed against the bruins out of this it should have been goal disallowed panthers penalty holy fuck what are we doing what are we doing i mean we have too much shit to still be this bad too much technology too much too many resources too much personnel what are we doing this is wholly intentional and i gotta point out that colin campbell still works for the national

So just going back on the actual play here, Connor McDavid's skating by Quinn Hughes with his stick up. He skates right by him, stick up. It's a clear hit in the face with his stick, cuts Quinn Hughes. he goes down and from this angle it's even worse is this the one yeah that's the that's the one

where you just see he gets him right in the face here and then not only does Quinn Hughes go to the official show him the cut but Connor McDavid's sitting on the bench nothing's done about it and I don't know how you walk away from this and you say you did a good job as an official Kelly kelly sutherland had the worst second period of of any referee i can remember in and i said this on the stream in in and i'm i watched a lot of bad ref beliefs games the the the vancouver canucks fans know kelly sutherland perfectly he's from richmond bc and i think he goes so hard against a perceived bias the canucks have never won a game with him reffing in the playoffs he's the Wow, so he's their West Macaulay.

With Quinn Hughes, that one is so interesting because every game in the Canucks-Edmonton series so far has ended with one goal differential.

And that game, too, was an overtime winner by Edmonton. It should be a double minor on the best player in the world. And so what I'm saying with Quinn Hughes is, The fact that it wasn't a double-miner, that leads directly to Vancouver losing that game. How about Bennett, who got the game-winning goal in a game he shouldn't have been in? Yeah, well, there you go. It's a good point. By the way, it's hard to have sympathy for the Canucks because they're making the same mistake in 2024 that they made in 2011. Making the same mistake.

the people that make the call should answer it. And then Sweeney essentially says that the Department of Player Safety needs to say what happened on the Bennett-Marchand play. He said, quote, we've seen every possible angle. He's not saying that they made the wrong call. He's not saying that, he's like, I just need to know their thoughts on it.

It's like what I said earlier, right? What goes on in the player, Department of Player Safety meeting where they're like, we saw this. Because here's what it is. It's a hockey play or here's a long explanation about why what they did is wrong. How about a long explanation for why that's allowed?

the canucks i was one of them and uh boy oh boy that's a good hockey team and the rangers go up three nothing on the hurricanes hurricanes stay alive by winning game four j cancel baby and they're not gonna come back surely not except they're like the best team down three oh i've ever seen like no team that plays as well as them should be down three oh so you sound like rod brindamore oh i know i know i'm fascinated by what happens because every game in that series has been dynamite every game what do you think happens i think eventually the rangers close it out it's just based on on how it's been trending igor shisterkin is the best goalie remaining in the national hockey league right now and i don't think it's even close by anybody uh else because

what what's happened here is the carolina hurricanes have done a fantastic job throwing low low percentage shots on net so he's racking up the saves and they haven't really been a threat but you also have to be good and save those shots and what he's done is he's he's stolen a couple games he's kept the rangers in it and the rangers have been able to capitalize on every scoring opportunity they get and and you underrate the rangers offense because of how many different guys they have throughout their offense but um they've been dynamic capitalizing on those scoring chances and the guy like laughs really come into his own like forget those bust talks at all over his it's it's a complete 180 on the narrative on him and i think they eventually get one more win

here in this series and it's a it's a shame for the hurricanes because two years in a row now scoring has what's been stopped them from winning a playoff series like scoring but not offense yeah they've had they've had like offense that hasn't been threatening it's been coming in waves but it hasn't been threatening and they haven't had the ability to score the big goals and their power play being one for 17 to me the biggest story overall of this series can relate you score your first power play goal in game four uh yeah that's game four in the series and you go one oh for 16 before that and then one for 17 like you can't win no you can't is that one for 16 in the series or all playoff this series oh okay yeah i'm gonna throw out there the freddie the freddie

anderson kochakov debate has been interesting as well because freddie getting a puck bounced off his butt and then into the goal like can't do that like be on your post you can't have guys jesse jesse how many times do i need to say freddie anderson in the playoffs before people will take me seriously how many times going do i need to say people like oh freddie was so great And there were people at the end of the season going, well, the Leafs could use a goalie like Freddie Anderson. more it goes up in value so really this is just investing one on one i think that's that's what that's one of the biggest storylines there is is the goalie going back and forth i probably go to check off here in in game number five do they've been like i think rod's trying to show some confidence in freddie he's signed for another year on the team they're not i think he's going to be the starting goaltender come sept october again so you don't want to just make him the number two but like i i would go to kachek off here i uh um i gotta say it's been so entertaining watching that series and i and and ultimately if the goaltending difference isn't so large i think we have a closer series yeah and i think well yeah i think it's it's a lot of igor's in both

nets no but you know it's like the leaf problem right steve like you know hurricanes do this you you have that oh you know they looked like geniuses last year with like the three goalies but again you still it's it's there is something to be said for a guy who plays 50 games who's solid in 45 of them well 48 of them dude um i mean they're better they're better than the Leafs but oh yeah you don't have the best goalie night in night out uh in a series your power play is anemic and um a very low percentage of your shots are going in yeah and it's alarming tell me what the Carolina Hurricanes are better at than the Rangers generating shots but low percentage ones right yes yes yeah yeah you're throwing 50 shots on net but so you're tricking many of them

whoever wins you're tricking the five on five metrics but at the end of the day if you don't get any traffic what's the point and that's the thing the rangers have for me for my money a better forward group they have a better defensive group at least on the high end i would i would say team defense there is kind of the you definitely lean towards the hurricanes one of the we've run through like a lot of the storylines that are in this series but one of them that we haven't mentioned is truba and gustafson on their third pair have been uh just awful like i don't have a better word for it they've been they've been feasted on by the hurricanes and i think team defense is somewhere where the hurricanes shine but if you if you want to go through the other

parts of the game i think i'm favoring the rangers just on how they've played i don't know you can't bench truba no you can't because he's your captain is he hurt no i just think that he's just doesn't have the step that he used to have which is wild because he's like 30 is it you don't think he might have hurt himself when he like superman flew into the forest he just could be dead i don't know if you saw the when he tried to throw a hit at kuznetsov when kuznetsov was coming up the wing and he scored that goal yeah it was it was bad and that pairing has been feasted on by the hurricanes at five on five especially so i think they're like they have a decision and is it not chris drury who was captain of the rangers at one point yes and yeah and he was

boat and do boat stuff yeah um can you tell us a little bit about where the idea came from and and who you spoke to when you were doing the interviews for this book it came in the spring of 2021 they simon and schuster my agent sort of approached me and said hey we think we have an idea for a book and i know steve has written a couple books and sometimes when they pitch ideas you'll go wait a sec has anyone done this before so you say let me check first because sometimes they'll pitch ideas and go oh wait uh adam wild's done three versions of this book already i can't do this again right So they're like, okay, wait a sec. We kept looking.

We didn't see anyone have ever done a book like this. And so then bit by bit, I just did detective work and started tracking down current players and coaches and then X players, um, wherever they lived and basically said, Hey, this is what I'm doing. And I want to talk to you about your day with the cop. And we just started building it from there bit by bit. Now it's a, uh, it's, it's one of those things that kind of like, again, we we've all dreamed of doing.

And I also think of, too, like I think of Tom Brady when he won in Tampa, you know, throwing the throwing the trophy from boat to boat to boat. Like, oh, my God, he dented it. Yes. Yeah. Jim, what were some of your favorite stories? Can you give us some highlights without giving the book away? Sure. Well, John Cooper in Tampa is I'll start there. The boat thing's great. But for John Cooper and the players in the lightning, they were quite upset because of COVID.

They weren't a lot of a cup tour the first time they won and they didn't get a day with the cup. and they were especially John Cooper who started from very humble roots and after a lot of playoff failure wins the cup he's like I can't believe I can't have a day with the cop and so when they started the next season and they were so laser focused to do it again because they were desperate they were cheated out of their lifelong dream to share the cup with family and friends and he said was so when he did have his his day and a half almost with the cup in quarterly in Idaho his offseason home they squeezed every second out of it because then he said that i mean it hurt them so bad and there was only one player not on the first team and that was shattenkirk and he got a

day with it because he didn't get it the year before we should have known they were going to repeat like if that's motivating you the next season we should have known um how far back do do the stories go like do you have like old timey cup stories yeah jesse you know what happened is um up until the around the early 90s it was such an informal thing when you won with the cup but in 1994 there's some famous and infamous stories of the new york rangers in manhattan what they did after they won the stanley cup and to gary betman's credit i know he gets a lot of criticism they said you know what let's do this right let's get the hockey hall of fame involved let's get a curator a keeper of the cup and do it so i start in 1995 the first year of the formal tour uh now

i do talk to larry robinson based on his time when he was the head coach of the devils in 2000 but of course you know he won six as a player and as part of as far as i'm concerned the greatest dynasty of all time the montreal canadians of the late 70s and you know and as he said we didn't get a day with the cup back then i mean gila fleur stole it in 78 went to thurso for two days and brought it back but no one had like a formal day with the cup and in 95 when he's an assistant with the doubles he goes to his hometown which is a small dairy community in marvinville ontario outside of ottawa and he's seeing these older men from the town weeping at the side of the cup and it it's hitting him and all the players did the same thing probably the only time they saw

their dad or their grandfather cry is when they keeper the cup puts the cup in their living room and says this is your day with the cup and it just overwhelms a lot of people uh i don't know why my mind went here i'll talk to it uh i'll talk about it with my therapist later was there a former leaf who won the cup uh and was just like thank gosh i'm not on that team anymore no so it's funny uh anders erickson won with detroit and played with the least later so so all the people i talked to um no none of them were former leaves they may have played for Leafs after the fact right his team and you know Brendan Shanahan is highlighted for his time with the Red Wings of course now he's the long-term tenured president of the Maple Leafs but no there

was no that that did never come up make sure you tail Tanny uh tail Tanny tail Shani for uh his uh next day with the cup that's right that's right yeah so Jim uh uh let me ask you this uh what would you do to fix the leafs hey listen jim yeah i know that's not what the book is but jim has done sports radio in this city for 20 something years 20 plus years i want to know what jim langs thinks well and i'll base it on what i feel and what a lot of the players say who have their day with the cup and they reflect back on winning and having the day so they all admit that the night you win it's not reality it's almost an out-of-body experience and then when the cup's there that day it sinks in and then after the fact you're like you realize they look back

and this is why we won uh it's it's total team leadership in when i write in 2001 avalanche i focused on eric messi and dan heino who were role players but played an important role on a very talented team that had some of the all-time greats joe stackett patrick waugh you know adam foot and you got ray bork so you you need everything you you need the oh no dear like ruin you need the stars to be stars jim mike madano jim i gotta stop you for a second go ahead uh go pick it up from you need everything and i apologize just because your zoom cut out Can you pick it up from the – you were naming the Colorado Avalanche players. I hate when Zoom does this.

In 2001, when the Colorado Avalanche win – oh, sorry. Did Zoom do it? It did it again. Am I back? Sorry, buddy. You're good now. You're good now. Let's try this.

All right. Okay. So in 2001, when the Avalanche win, they've got three or four of the all-time great players in the history of the game, but they've got Dan Heinold and Eric Messier who play an important role with the team

and play important minutes. And Rich Peverly with the 2011 win in the 96th Avalanche. I look at Mike McDaniel in the 99 stars who was an absolute force in nature of that playoff.

But Craig Ludwig's in the book and they don't win without him. And that's what I think of the Leafs is just because you're a fourth liner, just because you're a seventh defenseman every time you step on that ice is so important brad may talks about it when they won with anaheim in 07 they had injuries personal family matters they had suspensions they had all the black aces the extra players

about six or seven of them played important minutes in the cup final so there's not just one person that does it yeah yeah well listen uh you can uh you can pick it up everywhere it is uh another great book by jim by the way you you've had so many books there it is one more time one more time for us my day with the cup there it is available now uh jim uh we're looking forward to your next book next week you do write a lot it's it's a you know sitting next to a guy who writes a book every half decade like steve's on right now and i should write less the amount of the amount of uh love and care and detail and everything that goes into this the amount of book writing that you do is actually spectacular and should be applauded thank you
