Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, Steve, I see that you're on your phone there. Yeah, I'm reading about how great the show is. But are you on public Wi-Fi that you can trust? Oh, no, thank goodness. Well, that's not good, Steve, because your information could be taken. What? I don't want that. Well, do you have any idea how I can prevent it? NordVPN, Steve.
Starting point is 00:00:19 Wow, that's great. Jesse, tell us about what NordVPN could do for Steve. What do you think? It can protect Steve's information by putting, like, a protective wall of internet jargon. So, like, it's not real, but it's there, and it's protecting you. That's right. In theory, if one of my favorite YouTubers had a stream of a hockey game, but I didn't live in the country... Where it was available.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Had those, yeah, I could... You could do that, yeah, or you could watch your favorite television series that might be on a different streaming platform in a different country. You can pop over there and watch that. Or you can just get protected, you know, through protecting yourself through a public Wi-Fi. Thank you for doing that for me instead because I'm tired. Now, we have an exclusive NordVPN deal for you at nordvpn.com slash dangle, D-A-N-G-L-E, to get a huge discount off your NordVPN plan plus four additional months for free. It's completely risk-free with Nord's 30-day money-back guarantee.

Starting point is 00:02:06 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake well it was a bunch of games last night in the nhl yeah and a lot of them weren't particularly good uh there were a lot of butt kickings there were there were some good ends sure sure well let's talk about let's talk about it there was one which one which oh wait no there were two because seattle was a good end yeah yeah yes yes florida dallas was a good end yeah did you think that ottawa pittsburgh was a good end listen bunching scores in the last minute i watched
Starting point is 00:02:58 parts of three hockey games last night while i was up with my daughter and um i did not watch that game well who did they play uh it was a pittsburgh ottawa good lord yeah 2017 was so long ago yeah it was it's it honestly i thought about that too and i'm like how far they have fallen holy toledo that's part of the circle of life but uh the penguins uh scored in the final minute to tie it up good for them and then uh and then in overtime they lost anyway bad for them yeah and and my wife actually looked at me and she said that is a very kyle dubas game Tie it up in the last minute, get everybody all excited, and lose in overtime.
Starting point is 00:03:37 We've finally reached that time of the year where, because it was Bathurston who got the winner, right? Yeah. I was like, why are you celebrating? We're finally in that part of the season. Yeah. I'm like, you're taking it. No, let them celebrate.
Starting point is 00:03:47 No, I agree. They need something good. I agree. Every win is a win. Yeah. I agree. I agree. I was just, as a fan, like, we're at the time of year
Starting point is 00:03:56 where fans are starting to actively cheer against the team that they cheer for. if you're if you're at the bottom and you want and you want uh mr salabrini yeah of course of course he should be a san jose shark like if we're doing the justice for where this guy should go for the perfect storyline macklin salabrini should be a san jose shark just because of the ties he has to the to that area of california because his dad is an employee for the golden state warriors and all that cool he spent a lot of time in golden state because that's where his dad worked whoa all right he's he's he's born and bred like bc like he's from he's from bc but
Starting point is 00:04:30 his ties are to the bay area so it'd be cool if he ended up as a duck or a shark he's the guy who taught steph curry to shoot yes yeah yeah that's cool he's the third splash brother that's right curry thompson celebrini mr celebrini mr let's let's talk about the two most consequential games last night because there were two that were really important and both of them were pretty lopsided i'm going to start with the less exciting one except that it is kind of interesting the minnesota wild are keeping things somewhat interesting in the western conference chasing down the vegas golden knights now vegas won in overtime against seattle in a huge comeback huge comeback two in the third and the minnesota wild also won 4-1 against the arizona coyotes and if
Starting point is 00:05:21 you're keeping track minnesota's got a six point gap between vegas and themselves and a seven point gap between nashville who are surging in themselves now vegas has been really bad they've been i think 30th in the league since uh january 1st in terms of records it's really bad everyone talks about their cap strategy like there's no side effects oh there's a oh there's there's issues like they i mean listen them getting in the playoffs they're not going to be an easy out but no they do have to still get there i mean you take this trade a hundred times out of a hundred but if they miss the playoffs this year that'll be two of the last three years they missed the playoffs they just won the cup in the middle of it yeah but but with all the acquisitions they made thomas hurdle and all
Starting point is 00:06:02 that like i think they i think the idea is to make the playoffs i think they would view that as a failure and probably wouldn't be okay with the trail obviously no no it would be miserable now uh minnesota is six three and one in their last 10 it's not going to be good enough if they keep up this pace to catch vegas not yet you gotta win more than that believe it or not you gotta have a nashville 802 or an 8-1-1 in the next 10 to even even sniff it but i will be watching that one now the more consequences if you're sorry you don't we don't even move on so quickly because i think there's a second we need to take to pump the tires of a client of ours uh mark andre flurry a client of ours who all of our clients gives us money who during this great run of minnesota he's
Starting point is 00:06:44 been i think spectacular he's been four and one with a 926 over his last five starts and i think he's kind of taken control of the net there over gustafson which is not what i predicted at the beginning of the season like he again not relevant but relevant to this conversation i drafted philip gustafson in uh fantasy and his first game of the season was like a 40 billion save win and i'm like hell yeah and then he proceeded to not win for i think a month and i said oh dear philip that's quite bad i thought uh flurry was gonna tandem at best with gustafson be become a backup right off into the sudden sunset whenever the wild season was done that dude's messing around and being a starter in his late 30s yeah i think it's it's cool to see that during the important part
Starting point is 00:07:36 of the stretch of the season here he's really taking the reins of of the starting goaltender their job and i don't know how long they're gonna ride him because they usually go back and forth back and forth but now flurry's got i think the last two games in a row which is to win which is like rare you know just to get the two games in a row yeah he had the uh the last two for minnesota so i wonder if they if you continue to ride the hot hand there you have to it's an interesting decision for somebody who's just john heinz every game i'm gonna flip flop goalies that's it but now the last two games you put out flurry he's hot wins both of them 9 20 plus in both games do you go again with flurry on thursday when they have another game you have absolutely yeah you keep
Starting point is 00:08:15 riding you know what i like about minnesota too because they seem to be in the fuck it let's go for it and try some shit uh you know pulling the goalie in overtime you know uh uh you know john heinz going back and forth back and forth okay let's ride the hot hand i want to see minnesota do some things like even if they miss the playoffs i want this still to feel like a moral victory for them like we tried a bunch of shit we got crazy it was entertaining yeah it's still worth buying a ticket to the game like if you saw yesterday one of the stories yesterday uh uh coming off of the flames game is like is it even worth buying a ticket here wow like it was meant like like eric francis said in his report um people are gonna have to get used
Starting point is 00:08:55 to the fact that um that this is gonna be kind of messy for a while flames fans are gonna have to get used to that they are not that far yeah that's and it's still like competitive nhl hockey what are we talking about but they're not that good did you guys watch that any of that game yesterday yeah i saw i saw the highlights of the flames game they were on defense just a blob they were useless useless on defense so but but going back to the wild i think you know calgary not being that far out and minnesota not being that far out relatively speaking we're not talking about the Eastern Conference where there's a real race happening.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Calgary not being that far out is going to feel like, or at least at this point, air being let out of balloon, right? Minnesota feels like, wow, they're battlers. Look at these warriors. Look at them go.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Look at the cap issues that they have. Look at all these things and they're still in there. Like there's going to be a very different view of almost an identical season, points wise. It's rare to be
Starting point is 00:09:51 in any sort of MVP conversation if your team doesn't even come close to making the playoffs. Last night made me go, oh jake markstrom's the best goalie on the planet oh yeah dan vladar oof yeah yeah yeah yeah that that was that was not good but i mean don't look now like some of these some of these playoff uh uh races are actually getting pretty interesting though that east is yeah we'll get we'll get to though uh leading us oh but uh lead us there quick i i think it's gonna be real tough for
Starting point is 00:10:23 minnesota to have any kind of shot at that playoff spot that the golden knights have just because you can have a pretty mediocre last 20 games for the golden knights and still have that six point gap where you're not gonna you're not gonna lose that spot to the wild but it's commendable for them to go for it vegas is also writing the ship a little one two straight so yeah i mean at this at this point you could pretty much win out and still like not even have that great of a chance yeah because they don't even need to pick up that many points to just secure that spot i think we got our eight playoff teams in the west to be honest i i think we do too but i would still like minnesota to make it interesting yes which they are trying to do yeah and they have a they
Starting point is 00:11:05 have a really weak uh schedule coming up here because i think it's the blues and then the coyotes again and then the blues again so they have a they have a real shot at here to go on get a string a couple games together because that's what you need right you need a six seven game winning streak to actually get into it and we and we say the blues but the blues who are two points behind them with one game in hand right last week yeah they were where did they go well they they stink um well yeah i guess four five and one in their last 10 now let's talk about the east guys oh the detroit red wings as of this morning are no longer in the playoffs they did nothing at the deadline which some said was good some said was bad
Starting point is 00:11:44 But if you look at Detroit's last 10, four of six, and I believe of that last 10, they've lost, I think it's seven of eight or six of eight. So not great. They cannot slip right now because it's not one team chasing them. It's at least three. So you got the Sabres, the Caps, and the Islanders. I think the Islanders are the odds on favorite. and the islanders have a game in hand which is why they're ahead of them in the wild card because they're tied at 72 points it's disappointing to me that we didn't include
Starting point is 00:12:18 new jersey in there even though they have a game in hand on buffalo and they're only one no new jersey their white towel is yeah is out like it's they're not well i have something to talk about with new jersey later in the show but not it isn't playoffs and listen if they make it good for them but i'm as of game 65 or 66 depending upon what market you live in they're not in the picture and they probably won't be the aisles are all of a sudden hot detroit all of a sudden stinks and has lost six straight so the capitals got better and the sabers are uh still in the fight so what do we talk about when we talk about the detroit red wings like because because here's the thing the the moves this off season to me this upcoming no no this past this past were a
Starting point is 00:13:03 signal that Detroit ownership was done waiting. I think that they're... It's kind of been the past few years. No, no, but they're done waiting. Yeah. They want to be
Starting point is 00:13:12 in the playoffs now. Eisenman's coming up on his... This is going to be, I think, the completion of the season. Is this not going to be year five as general manager
Starting point is 00:13:18 of the Detroit Red Wings? He has not been there a short amount of time. And so, if you're the Illich family and you have this brand new beautiful arena that everybody says
Starting point is 00:13:25 is the best in the league, you probably want to see some playoff games in it. Now, so far this year, it's worked out okay for them. They've had a good season. they've been strong um they've had you know a couple of their free agent acquisitions specifically justin hall and that one obviously rings a little bit heavier in toronto because of our history with
Starting point is 00:13:41 them uh didn't work out and they were trying to move him and they'll probably move him in the offseason because who couldn't use a right shot defenseman who's overpaid great guy though i would say this the detroit red wings are about where i think everybody thought they should be right now fighting for a wild card spot when we talked about them on july 1st they made a bunch of acquisitions but my question at the time was are they legitimately that much better is jt comfort that price is justin hall at that price are those the guys i like the david perron acquisition um you know uh i you know there were certain things about the team you're like okay i can see it but when they got they were hot mid-season right like they they they climbed
Starting point is 00:14:27 right up there i think they were ahead of the league early yeah they were not not just mid-season like they started off as one of the best teams in national hockey league and then your your question is very interesting because i think that's the main one here is is what we're seeing now and where they've regressed to the true red wings or is it what they played uh towards the beginning of the season i i think if i'm a fan i don't know about a player but if i'm a fan i kind of wish management did something to reward this team that's actually done pretty well and like clearly taken a step this season at the deadline they made one trade they got rid of Clem Koston for Radom Simec and a 2024 seventh but it would have been it would have been the wrong move based on
Starting point is 00:15:12 how they've played now if Eisenman went out and bought at the deadline that would have been the incorrect thing to do yeah I guess the thought is well maybe you do something that it stops the bleeding or i don't know i'm trying to look at this as someone who is cheering for the team to win sure i think if you're cheering for the red red wings and you watch this owens six stretch you saw a team that has completely fallen apart without dylan larkin and it reminds me a lot of what's happened with the new jersey devils where they lost dougie hamilton and it destroyed their entire back end and their ability to do anything on the power play or offensively or defensively just every regard of their team dougie hamilton not having him ruined it and and along with the
Starting point is 00:15:55 goaltending but with the with the red wings their competes gone like they're not in these games where they should be they're fighting for a playoff spot for their lives and not having dylan larkin in the lineup for the last two weeks ish um has has destroyed them and if you're that weak where one player completely ruins your team i think there's a lot more problems is what i'm trying to get to and sometimes this happens and red wings fans will uh relate to this sometimes god hates you and that's what i thought last night when joe valino took a puck to the head i was just like okay god hates the red wings right now like nothing's going right for these poor guys he he got dinged it looks scary for a bit i uh i ended up switching to i don't remember which game
Starting point is 00:16:38 it was because life is a hurricane and i don't remember anything right now um but i didn't see if he returned to the game the uh i could i could see that our buddies over at winged wheel saying like maybe maybe it's time to shake up the lineup a little bit and fans are like pretty level-headed about what they are you know so i'm talking yeah like i don't see any red wings fans like claiming in the summer that they're gonna win the cup like nope never never once actually but they thought they were a playoff team up until this point and i think that's a that was a fair assessment of the team and it sucks to see them completely fall off and not have any not be competitive that was my complaint with the 2017 Leafs when uh you know they were this ragtag bunch of rookies and they
Starting point is 00:17:23 hit a bit of a snag down the stretch and it looked like they might miss the playoffs and yeah but it's the first year of like Austin Matthews and all these rookies I'm like yeah but they had this spot yeah for months and they're about to choke that's the problem here it's not that it would have been different if they were down in the standings and they fought their way up to this point yes then we're talking about them like minnesota exactly the fact that you were there also from the get the first week of the season we heard from red wings fans being like what the fuck are you doing in your previews look at them look at them go and all season long that's sustained so to see them just completely crap the bed at this point it's got to be disappointed
Starting point is 00:18:03 it yep i i think we underrate and it's maybe something we should look at when it comes to our season previews we underrate how important a team's uh farm team is i'm not saying detroit's is a bad one i'm just saying every team like there's so little between these guys like through 32 teams in the league um teams that have the best farm systems they call these guys up and they plug holes they just they stop the boat from sinking at very least even if you take on water it's like all right hurdle's gonna come back and we'll get the bucket in there and we'll start dumping it out and shea theodore is back and oh now mark stone's overboard and quick plug byron phrase in there you know i think it's a dance i think of uh logan stankovin over in dallas where
Starting point is 00:18:54 it's just hey in february we get to plug this guy into the lineup and he can go on a heater for three games and he's kind of tailed off recently but you get that best trade deadline acquisition maybe yeah right and he looks so funny he looks really he's just visually hilarious because he's tiny yeah because the stars are huge and he's just he's just a little guy little man guy who goes in there and snipes on everybody yeah now i want to talk about the other side of this we've talked a lot about detroit and what do we always say about the islanders if they get into the playoffs oh you don't want to play them they're tough out can you imagine if the playoffs started today a florida new york islanders series oh that'd be fun now i want to run you through some
Starting point is 00:19:40 of the islanders lines in case you are not an islanders fan and have not been paying attention nelson horvat barzal lee uh pageau palmieri angval sezikis holmstrom uh and then you know then you've got your you know if they're if they're gonna bring matt martin back like if He's coming back in. If there's going to be that, you can reunite the Sezikis-Klutterbuck line, but Kyle McClain and Hudson Fashing are still in there. But here's their defense. Pelich, Dobson, Romanov, Pollock, Riley, Sebastian Ajo, the other.
Starting point is 00:20:09 Morgan? No. Mike, M. Riley. And here's the thing. The other M. Riley. If one goalie's bad, you have the other goalie. Sorokin and Varlamov. For a cap league that has such a ridiculous amount of turnover,
Starting point is 00:20:23 how are the islanders virtually the same every year for like half a decade there's so little turnover on that roster it's crazy well everybody signed to a seven-year deal well there's that helps but but like most of those deals you're not like yeah that stinks angl he scored the other night neat scored against the leafs didn't he he did he scored a game winner against the leafs i think he might be one bobby mcmahon though had to be i gotta look my point is this is not going to be an easy out team and i'm not saying florida doesn't beat them i'm just saying i don't think florida will enjoy this series if this happens i think florida would want detroit much more than they'd want the islanders watching florida who plays playoff
Starting point is 00:21:04 hockey like from september onward uh take on dallas yesterday was giving me flashbacks it's just giving me flashbacks tampa the leafs would dilly dally with the puck at the blue line against tampa and tampa was like go ahead we don't give a shit like have the puck back there and the leafs were not able to transition to the second round where florida was like i like ran at you at the blue line like mad men yeah they couldn't handle and uh it really screwed dallas up um they didn't really have a very good chance in the final two and a half minutes with the with the net empty i'm curious uh about i want to know if the islanders in detroit play at all um in the next little bit here because that would be a question that'd be a like a cannot miss game um i know
Starting point is 00:21:51 buffalo fans are like screaming because they have two games against detroit one was the one where they killed them they got another one coming up so there's four points on the stand you just take right well islanders and buffalo tomorrow so that's interesting oh there you go and then you've got the islanders and red wings on thursday march 21st and if things stay the same and the islanders have a mixed schedule they got to play the sabers then the senators which you hope to beat the sabers you expect to beat the senators right you want to beat the senators then you got to play the rangers and hurricane so one and two in the division you got to get at least two points there and then and then red wings oh that's a huge game wow that's well that's another reason why you don't
Starting point is 00:22:29 want to play them in the first round their playoffs have begun yes yeah one thing i've seen because since february 25th the islanders have uh they lead the league in pdo so they they 108 is their pdl if you're if your puck luck is normal you're sitting at a hundred percent just for anybody who doesn't know pdo it's it's all right you're sitting around a hundred percent is usually where teams are that means the the lucky bounces are going both ways and you're kind of even 108 you're eight percent above that that means things are going your way and you're getting lucky but my response to that is always if it's this point in the season mid-march and all you need to do is and go through this thing through june you can ride a pdo bender for two months that's
Starting point is 00:23:13 perfectly fine like this isn't like it's it's november and we're like okay they're gonna regress to the mean no if they get hot now you can ride this florida did it last year and if the islanders just stay this hot it's could be a thing so watch out that 108 might stay there i i like this i like this the islanders in this i think this is fun uh 100 because because you You know, three, four weeks ago, short memories in hockey, obviously. But three, four weeks ago, people were going, it's time for a change at the top. If they make the playoffs and they surprise and they get to the second round, Lou Lamorello is a hero again.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Three, four weeks ago, the whole wildcard pitcher sucked. It's true. There was nothing. Stunk. Like, teams are battling for, like, positioning and home ice. And this team might make it. Who cares? Boo.
Starting point is 00:23:58 And now, like, we're talking about half a dozen teams who aren't in, who have a realistic shot of getting in. Did you know that I think there's only one team that's fully eliminated from the playoffs? The Blackhawks. That's right. Only one. Everybody else has a chance. Thanks, Connor.
Starting point is 00:24:12 Tuesday and my fucking fantasy week's already over. Why? What happened? Because he got five frigging points last night. Why didn't you pick up Nick Foligno, who had four assists? You know what? Maybe I should. Now that the kid's back.
Starting point is 00:24:25 Frigging Ian Tulloch. I tried to get Bedard in a trade earlier this season. It didn't work. Do you see Bedard going at the rest last night? The linesman? I saw. Did he say, you don't belong here? We have computers that could replace you?
Starting point is 00:24:37 Oh, he should have. Adam! Don't do the bitch! He's doing the bitch! I saw the clip of, I think he was talking to someone wearing black and white. I don't know if it was a ref or a linesman. Basically, I think the ref was in his way. Yeah, it was a ref, yes.
Starting point is 00:24:55 I shouldn't say it was a lineman. It was a ref. The ref didn't get out of the way of them entering the zone. and Bedard's like, what the hell? Can you guys get out of the way? And then the ref goes back to him. He's like, you guys are really fast and I'm really slow and I'm trying.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Can I give everyone some video homework? Type in Tyler Sagan ref, there you are. Because he was in a battle in the offensive zone in the corner and he's trying to elude a defender. And he's got the puck and there's a ref in his way and he goes, there you are.
Starting point is 00:25:27 There you are again. And you can hear him on the mic. like he's in a puck battle while screaming at the ref and ref's going what do you want me to do it's amazing i love it it's a great clip i love that it's tim's 60th anniversary and roll at the rim is back to celebrate you can win some big prizes an all electric volkswagen 94 a sun-soaked hilton vacation or even some major cash with a daily jackpot of ten thousand dollars from tim's financial where would you take your sun-soaked hilton vacation adam wild and steve dangle if you got the choice of a sun-soaked hilton vacation you know what i'm i'm agnostic when it comes to
Starting point is 00:26:08 like i want a nice beach give me a nice beach but i think it comes down to which hilton is going to pamper me the most we're talking about a sun-soaked hilton vacation i need i need like day one i need to be able to have some drinks on the beach brought to me like you know when you get there and you got a thing like give me some do that and then day two i'm gonna need a spa i'm gonna use spot i need to use you really are a billionaire i'm gonna need a spa in the morning i need a massage maybe mani pedi okay that's what i need and then you know day three we go we go at the beach and then maybe day four we take a little tour around wherever we're going i got it what is it the one place that my wife and i didn't go on our california honeymoon that we wish we did

Starting point is 00:27:42 But I think if we got you guys in a BetterHelp session, you know, a therapist through BetterHelp together, work through couples therapy, maybe things would be a lot less tense around here. Now, here's the thing. They would be tense around here. Here's the thing, Steve. Would you want it on via FaceTime? Would you want it via text? Would you want it via phone? What works for you?
Starting point is 00:28:02 I liked in person, and I didn't think video would be as effective. But obviously, COVID happened, and then it became necessary. and I enjoyed it. Yeah. I enjoyed it. I do therapy via phone. No. I've done that a couple times.
Starting point is 00:28:17 Yeah, I like it. And I like it a lot. And here's the thing. It's all up to you. This is the great thing about BetterHelp is you have the choice. You're going to be matched

Starting point is 00:29:04 Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. um uh i want to talk about a few of the things that we've sort of missed over the last few days because there was a lot of fallout from the trade deadline vegas thank god made it interesting but there are always quotes that slip through i have absolutely no idea what we've missed uh well this one i well you had a baby so i understand that um i've been watching and reading and everything so one of the major deals that didn't happen was markstrom to new jersey And obviously, New Jersey had made some trades that make them cap flexible. So this summer, they could go out and go, quote, big game hunting, right?
Starting point is 00:29:43 That's not, Jake Marksham's not big game hunting? He is, but I just think that they, whatever it was that stood in the way of that deal, they couldn't get it done. Rolls eyes. Tom Fitzgerald said this about the goalie market. He said, there is a market. People performing have set that market. All I'm trying to do is be fair in that market.
Starting point is 00:30:01 But you also need a team that wants to make fair deals, too, versus just extorting you for every big asset that you have. So that's spicy as hell. I saw a theory that he was referring to. Oh, my God. No, no. You see Sarah? Yes. Barry Trotz.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Barry Trotz. They said the prices were too high. Yes. But I'm pretty I'm fairly certain he's talking about the Calgary Flames. but he's not talking about Craig Conroy who we already know probably didn't get to make the final decision with Markstrom it was above his head and ownership well and I look at this and I look at this quote and I think what do you expect them to do they know that you're supposed to be in the playoffs this year your goaltending has been one of the major reasons you're not
Starting point is 00:30:50 and stop coughing and you expect them to be like you know what let me give you this great goaltender let's do it fairly no calgary's job is to extort him that's what the nhl is they don't need to trade him no they don't right that's that's what montreal did with uh jay kellen well with david savar oh yeah there's yeah here's our price if you can't meet it we'll keep them yeah we'll just keep them oh uh you know mac dumba is going for a pick swap all right david welcome welcome to the Montreal Canadiens again there's there's no point in trading them what's going to be great is when all these guys are still available at the draft and the price doubles just because it's the draft you think it'll double I think I don't know about double
Starting point is 00:31:35 but like it'll go up yeah no CJ was uh because CJ and Julian were talking about this on the CJ show yesterday that's a great show it's a fantastic little program they got going on over there um I think I think what he said was was very true about how the goalie market as a whole the prices were high in that like usually you can get a goalie for a first round pick but it seemed like this year everybody was trying to trade a goalie was trying to get the sun and the moon for them and this year at the draft it's going to be a really spicy draft because of all of the leftover deals from the trade deadline and all these moves that didn't really happen and we got the surprises like hurdle but um there's so many other moves like this one like all the goalies
Starting point is 00:32:13 that didn't move so we're going to have a really really good free agency slash trade deadline Vegas was low-key like so smart for getting hurdle like for a variety of reasons but another one of the reasons is they're gonna have a lot of turnover probably um this offseason and teams know that and they can extort high prices out of them and they sort of beat the market to it aha we already got hurdle you know we don't need this guy or that guy or that guy Jonathan Marcheseau is going to get paid paid i don't know who's gonna get him i don't think it's gonna be vegas i do but you never know i think they give them everything and they worry about it later oh man he makes five million bucks he that's okay he should easily be making eight yeah that's okay oh boy oh i don't think he passes
Starting point is 00:32:59 jack eichel in terms of like highest paid player on the team no or anything like that so i think they do it and they figure it out now the two goals last night yeah he's pretty darn good and has been for a long time a really long time three goals away from 40 which would be a career high by 10 he's already at a high in goals yeah oh my god yeah i think marsh or so the thing interesting thing with him is that really the the most memorable moments of his career and i think this is a compliment are in the playoffs oh yeah i mean that's he's such a i mean obviously he's good in the regular season but in the playoffs he's a factor that's the hallmark of like all the greats right and uh yes i'm well aware what team i talk about the majority of the time
Starting point is 00:33:42 um but uh the greats all have great uh playoff memories and playoff performances now i want to i want to alert you to a something that elliot and jeff said on the 32 thoughts uh podcast so when we reported the colorado philadelphia trade ryan johansson going to philadelphia um so this is interesting the flyers waived him and sent him to lehigh valley right nobody claimed them uh they it was said on the podcast that the flyers waived him in part due to the complicated history with torts johansson and torts did not get along in columbus and the hard feelings shared towards the sorry sorry hard feelings towards shared agent for cutter goche and ryan johansson now i understand not wanting to have the guy on the roster because he's not a torts guy and you
Starting point is 00:34:31 took him for a salary dump and you're getting assets back that completely makes sense to me but having hard feelings towards the agent over a different player that seems like it's personal oh it's i don't know if anything has ever been more personal in the national hockey league than uh cutter goj with um with the philadelphia flyers and this happens this does happen i'm trying to remember which gm it was but uh do you remember third overall who jack johnson was selected by he's been on a lot of teams so if you got this i'd be surprised jack johnson jack johnson not uh not eric because i always think colorado i know it's very annoying and they're like roughly carolina fucking right adam wild okay carolina okay third overall i don't know
Starting point is 00:35:23 if he ever played a game for them no i don't think he did and uh the rumor that i had heard is it was in part due to a personal beef between the gm at the time and his agent at the time um like carolina was getting rid of this guy's clients so it and they traded him to la and they traded him to la it doesn't surprise me that stuff like this uh would happen because it's happened in the past wow yeah and and it's how about that it's another it's actually kind of a similar situation really high draft pick really highly touted um and he hasn't even gotten there yet and they're already sick of him yeah and they get rid of him well i guess with cutter gochi it's a little different he's like i don't i don't want to sign there oh this is this is sad can i just can i just
Starting point is 00:36:12 i just was looking up jack johnson's career yeah do you know that he was traded from la in the spring of uh 2011 or 20 20 2012 2012 no he was traded right before they won right before they won the cup what was the trade i don't even know i have to look at it but oh that sucks i and then he went to columbus my heart breaks for those guys um like the guys who were traded like they were part of the organization hooray and then you get dealt and you don't get any of that you know like blake wheeler i think was traded from the bruins organization right before they won right um oh there's countless others and it's just gotta suck suck yeah that sucks like i always give nhl players crap for saying i don't watch the playoffs if they're not in it
Starting point is 00:37:00 if that happened to you you have my permission to not watch the play well i'm sure they're looking for your permission yeah i know i know but yeah no i get it because it's like i don't want to see that shit no that i understand i totally understand oh um how okay now not that ryan johansson's really gonna um not that he's gonna really change anything at the organization i don't know what his nhl career entails after this but um i do wonder like the gm it's on the GM and this agent to figure it out right they can't you can't keep going and doing business having this personal thing against each other I could see it playing out as because Kurt Overhart is the agent who's the he's the quote family advisor for Cutter Gauthier because
Starting point is 00:37:46 Cutter Gauthier is not allowed to have an agent as an NCAA athlete which is complete bullshit but whatever um Kurt Overhart I could see saying to Ryan Johansson I'm not a fan of the Flyers organization look how they treated my kid uh you were gonna move you there but they've guaranteed to waive you so you don't have to play in there in that in that spot you know like instead you get to go to lehigh valley and he's not he hasn't reported to lehigh valley because he's uh injured so there probably is no future for ryan johansson in that system i would not expect him yeah so i don't know what he's gonna do with his career moving forward because he he can't be bought out either if he's injured like he has another year left yeah so if they could they couldn't
Starting point is 00:38:24 even get rid of him this summer if the injury is still intact. So he has to prove that he's healthy at some point here. Would you take Ryan Johansson as a third or a fourth line center on your team at two million bucks or two and a half? Does he help David Conf? They would have to retain him. Yeah, that's what I mean, man.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Because he's at four now. What I'm saying is if I'm the Flyers, I'm not really interested in retaining half on Ryan Johansson. But I guess the other option is you just bury him. Yeah, that's what I mean. Why wouldn't you? And then you have three mil on the cap. you know what it's an interesting little solution now you know like our like i would like would you
Starting point is 00:38:59 take david comp's contract over ryan johansson's contract oh dear like here's what i'm thinking like if you're a team that's looking for center depth two million bucks for a center maybe he's been injured but remember a couple years ago this guy had 63 points yeah man two a lot happens in two years a lot happens in two years that's a hard miles body i've i thought he was cooked long ago and then he had a resurgence and now it looks like he's yeah i don't know i don't know how much hockey he can play that's the thing like i don't know how useful ryan johansson is to any nhl team but i assume like he's trying to work his way back and all that stuff but i feel like if there was an opportunity for a playoff team to get a depth centerman like somebody would have
Starting point is 00:39:43 taken it and the fact that nobody wants it and nobody's willing to take him is i think it's a good sign that right now he probably isn't in a place to play like tough hockey this is such a minutiae thing and stupid and but i couldn't help but focus on it kurt overhart does have another flyers client oh yeah it's helga grons who's like a minor leaguer for them but he's so far down the depth chart that i guess they just didn't do and but no other flyers no other flyer i think that's important johansson and helga grons and that's it i think that's important and i wouldn't be at all shocked to see grons like moved or demands a trade well what when all this stuff was popping off with cutter goatee i was like i wonder and then i saw and i didn't have it in me
Starting point is 00:40:30 to be like guys we got to talk about helga grons you know but i i think it's uh that's a fascinating thing because it'd be fun to know if he just if he's there um well he has he has 29 active contracts kurt overhart does so this guy's gonna have free agents oh yeah that the flyers are likely we have they're not they're not in on it uh okay so not free agents necessarily i'm just gonna read off i know he's a jack campbell guy so hilariously tied for his highest paid client is ryan johansson oh wow okay because he makes eight right uh jacob truba is the other troy terry John Gibson, Matthias Ekholm, Nick Schmaltz is an interesting potential trade target, Andrew Kopp, Jacob Slavin, Jack Campbell, Oufmarone.
Starting point is 00:41:21 That's a good client list. Yeah, Victor Arvidsson, Philip Gustafson, the goalie, Jesper Faust, Josh Lapina. I don't know who that is. And then it's, yeah, kind of minor leaguers after that. Oh, Mikey Aismont? How much does Mikey Aismont make? 800K? Get a better agent.
Starting point is 00:41:38 What was that? That's a good player. Anyway, sorry. Did you guys see that Casey DeSmith will be handling more games? Yes. They need to win seven out of their next 16 games because Thatcher Demko is injured. And Thatcher Demko is out two to four weeks.
Starting point is 00:41:56 My favorite quote about this was Rick Tockett saying, the guys really love Casey, so I think you'll see a lot of guys willing to block shots like they do for Demmer. And then in the press conference, he talks about it. He's like, not that he kind of like backtracks. he's like well not that you wouldn't but he's like you don't like every goalie and i thought that was really interesting you know what you know what are you laying down in
Starting point is 00:42:18 front of a goalie that you don't like that much uh earlier it's a good question i would love to see the post and pre-christmas shot blocks in front of uh elia samson off yeah yeah yeah they've the least of that goalies over the years where i'm like yep thanks for saying the quiet part out loud there rick um what i'm trying to do this is a fun game because de smith's been good for them and demko's obviously been great i'm trying to figure out who the hell the canucks third goalie is arthur's silovs adam's favorite goalie because he's a goalie on latvian one problem always my favorite one problem i had with um rick talkett there and the way demko was being played was that he played way too much no goalie in the month of february from february 1st to february 29th
Starting point is 00:43:07 played more games than thatcher demko he led the league with 11 games played which is a shit ton for a goaltender in one month yeah but jesse uh don't you look silly because the canucks were great during that stretch that's a joke they were terrible they probably could have tried a different strategy i don't know if playing him that much leads to an injury like i'm not saying like you play all those games you directly get injured but it's less likely that thatcher demko is sitting out for two weeks if he isn't playing every single night in february and i don't know why rick talk it when he has casey to smith who's been fantastic this year why just use them both you know when you get to the playoffs demko is going to be the starter just rest him for a little this might
Starting point is 00:43:50 be the year that frederick anderson messes around and wins a cup uh with the carolina hurricanes because this got to sit out dude this happened all the time and he would get injured right around this time like a month month and a half before the playoffs and you're willy wony you don't know uh this year obviously extremely unfortunate circumstances with a blood clot but he's back he's playing well and he's the goalie for the carolina hurricanes which i think is a pretty sweet gig um you know it's and again and again the greatness of andre vasilevsky he was doing 60 plus games a year forever nonsense and finally got surgery this year like goalies uh on a year-to-year basis we're like oh we we treat them like a like a like a orchid
Starting point is 00:44:41 like they're just so precious and and we can't have them go above 55 no 53 games and uh and then and then there's there's uh freaking andre vasilevsky yeah like a flower like i like concrete and he's just growing out of the cracks and no problem the best goalie situation in the league for the last two years has been swayman and allmark they won the vas allmark won the vesna last year and now swayman is one of the can't leading candidates and what they do is they split the games and they're both very good and they split them and then when you get to the playoffs you make your decisions there but like demko would we all agree he's been one of the best goalies this entire season oh yeah in february he was five and five with an 893 what
Starting point is 00:45:28 i would say they played him just to death and and and where have we seen that where do we see that freddie freddie anderson yeah and he was so beat up by the time he got to the playoffs every year in toronto i i but i'm saying it's it's like uh emphasizing it okay i i think the the frustrating part for me and people keep trying to tell me that freddie was good in the playoffs he wasn't he wasn't he learned from us learn from yeah he good games and then he had games like when we were in boston yeah six nothing you know what happened um jesse this reminds me of freddie anderson shut up i was trying to pull stats i was trying to pull stats whose stats are they freddie's they are freddie's that's crazy because i was gonna bring them up
Starting point is 00:46:08 i i know i deserve it's just a curious decision when you have your playoff spot locked up since october because they've been good all season long why not take it easy down the stretch and don't play them every game like you play them the majority of the games but use case you dismiss some more and now you don't now you have them out for two weeks i'll tell you why i will tell you why because rick tocket played in a generation where broder wah and all those guys played 70 games a year and and the difference is is that you know like a guy like kujo very very athletic uh also like would give you heart attacks with the way he played right oh he's hard attack goalie oh he was yeah there wasn't a whole lot of form there hoshek same thing heart attack even less form but
Starting point is 00:46:56 even more creativity and boy did he keep the buck out or disregard for his those four guys played so much net when you have a goalie like that the the the thing in the 90s was you ride ride the hell out of it and you keep going the difference i think is the style of play now back versus back then you know you had the red line you had the two line pass you had all those things that prevented quick neutral zone transition and you know the shots per game now versus the shots per game then the goals per game now versus the goals per game then i i think if you would just look at high danger scoring chances in the 90s to now you probably have to show those coaches hey listen this goalie is kicking their legs out like 10 times what they used to they're flopping on their
Starting point is 00:47:37 sides 10 times what they used to so it's not that they're soft it's that the game is different and where patrick waugh maybe had to do that five six times a game and he always executed and he always had a crazy glove save where he definitely sell the shit out of it and good for him sammy is the new king of monsters yes yes i love it and i love it you still gotta you still got to remember that this game is completely different than when rick tockett played and and he's done to my surprise a really good job coaching this team but i think jesse you make a really good point what are you doing i want to i want to say two things number one um how many 70 plus game seasons did martin brodeur have i don't actually know 12 oh my gosh yeah 12 that's too many not 60
Starting point is 00:48:21 70 including in 0607 when like he's on the back nine of his career in 0607 he played 78 he played all but four games are you joking he did 77 another three times and 75 stupid here's another one Ron Hextall 66 62 64 and then and then injury injury and then 36 45 54 65 like this guy right up until the end of his career was playing that many games if you look at hasik's numbers like the amount of games hasik played until the end when he really was yeah he got hurt a lot um was is it's incredible uh and i'm sorry go ahead well sorry the other thing i just i want to throw it out there sometimes the goalie just gets hurt yeah but he just got hurt yeah but again you shouldn't be playing him that much in february and you know that you probably
Starting point is 00:49:16 shouldn't be last last stat i have for you uh demko he hasn't missed a game yet technically because uh he got injured in the last one they haven't played since because they have that mini break but streak is still alive the crazy amount of minutes is still up there so since january 1st up until today where they've been on their break and he's missed the whole bunch of nhl games that have played for other teams he's still second in the league in minutes played he's played over 1400 minutes since july since january 1st and he only trails vasilevsky who's ahead of him by like four minutes they're both at 1400 uh minutes played since january 1st which is too much so here's another goalie oh sorry steve you go ahead well i was gonna say uh no you do your goalie
Starting point is 00:49:55 well i was gonna ask is there another goalie in the same position in the same conference do you know who i'm talking about this goalie has connor hellebusick an 899 save percentage which is the third lowest among goalies with 40 games played 870 save percentage in their last eight games played and a minus 4.8 goals saved goal save average I guess or goal save expected above expected. Yeah, second lowest
Starting point is 00:50:22 among goalies with 40 games played. Can you name the goalie? That couldn't be Hellebuck. It is not. Alexander Georgiev? Nope. It's a really good team. Ottinger? Jake Ottinger. Oh, good one. Jake Ottinger has an 899
Starting point is 00:50:37 save percentage on the year. And there's another guy who has a long history and he played 62 games last year and he's got 42 already how about the 66 games played 66 games played 60 games played and oh only 52 oh but it was in 70 games because of the covid lockdown frederick anderson oh man sometimes and i think this is the right thing to do you gotta you gotta save these players from themselves like that's why there's concussion spotters like you just you have to save these guys from themselves they're not gonna they're not going to do that teams just need to look and look at the best teams and look at what they do over the last two years i look at boston i look at florida i look at vegas florida well i think
Starting point is 00:51:20 tampa is a different situation where vasilevsky just plays his mind out and you can't emulate that at all oh you mean sorry i thought you were talking about like resting guys because i was thinking about what they did with kucherov no no i'm talking about just the goalie situations of those three teams the stanley cup champions the team that went on the one of the best heaters we've seen in recent memory and the team that set the all-time record for wins in a season tandem goalies goalie who wasn't the starter at the end of the season and then Bobrovsky goes in there and is now the starter for the playoffs didn't play the second half of season because Alex Lyon took his job and then Vegas who Aiden Hill was their 10th goalie in their organization
Starting point is 00:51:57 at the start of the season traded for Jonathan Quick on purpose like Jonathan Quick was seriously in contention to be their starter come playoff time what one minor side note um just for the discourse a criticism of the discourse can we just start talking about Bobrovsky like he's good again he is yes yeah I know that next year he might not be nobody still go but you're right it's Bob and I'm like no he's good now you're right no but that's that's Bob's thing he's good every other year yeah it's just in the regular season he started early so was who was the Nashville goalie who i can't but before you see pecorino pecorino was good every other year of sieve and unbeatable yeah like you'd be like like bobrovsky got uh got todd richards fired yes he did in
Starting point is 00:52:40 columbus he was so bad for the first two games todd richards was fired and torts comes in and bobrovsky's lights out the rest of the way in fairness so i has not come back so here's what i'm interested in with dallas by the way because um they have scott wedgwood as their backup I understand why people aren't big fans of Scott Wedgwood, except they don't. In Dallas, he's been pretty good. 9-15 save percentage in 21 games last year. He's had to play in 28 this year, only 25 of which he started.
Starting point is 00:53:10 9-0-1 save percentage. Which is about league average, maybe on the lower end of league average. I think you've got to rest Ottinger. You probably ought to. You Ottinger to? Oh, hey. You see? Hey, there's still...
Starting point is 00:53:23 I mean, home ice advantage is important in everything. It's not that important. It's less important than having a healthy goalie. I think home ice advantage is important if you win the first two games. If you split the home ice at the beginning, it's like, well, here we are. Series doesn't start, so you lose at home. Isn't that the old phrase? Oh, I hate it.
Starting point is 00:53:45 That's a stupid phrase, and that's a Toronto phrase. We've said that before. That's a sports cliche. Is it? Do you agree with the reasoning behind that sports cliche? Because sometimes you're like, when people say that, I'm like, I don't believe that, actually. The series starts when it starts. Yeah, no, it's ridiculous or sportsism.
Starting point is 00:54:01 It's supposed to make you feel better about losing. Okay. All right. That's what I thought. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers.
Starting point is 00:54:23 in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca um i want to ask you two guys about uh about this uh the atlanta nhl team officially has a new bitter because i believe there was already one in there uh and it's alfred alpharetta sports entertainment group led by anson carter Announced a formal request for the NHL expansion to come back to Atlanta. Now, everybody says, well, Atlanta, the market can't work. I think if you look at the history of the Atlanta Flames and then the Atlanta Thrashers, you'll see why it didn't work, right? Yeah, it was catastrophic.
Starting point is 00:55:12 And bad arena placement and bad ownership and a whole bunch of things. Here's what, I'll say this. Gary took a long time to be good at picking new owners. but he's really good at it now look at seattle's owners look at vegas's owners that's fair they are two of the most robust franchises already in the nhl especially vegas but you look at seattle there's not a peep out of them other than hockey stuff you don't hear anything about oh we're bad this year so we're we're worried i wish they were more exciting well they wish they were more chaotic well i don't want it to be chaotic off the ice they're they're i get you on the ice i want
Starting point is 00:55:49 seattle have a little more personality on the ice i agree but like you know when um that simpsons clip where al gore starts playing celebrate that's the seattle kraken that's whenever i see them why that i don't do something well i agree with you but again i just don't want it to be i don't need more coyotes drama you know what i mean no i don't need that that's what i that's what i'm saying keep it on the ice keep the drama on the ice get get some personality let maddie benears flourish you know that sort of thing you don't even go out on friday like come on man what do you do the thing with atlanta that's really important to understand is that there are a lot of corporate head offices there and there's a lot of money there and things are a lot of people there and there's a huge
Starting point is 00:56:30 opportunity in the southeast southern southeastern united states right now with the way hockey has come on quite strong there you know you've had some stanley cups you've had some finals of things you've got two teams in florida that are doing well you had the nashville predators and i know they're not technically i mean are they southeast are they central you know but you know what i'm talking about that range the carolina hurricanes are really good first time i looked up nashville on a map i was very surprised yeah but you know what i'm saying i thought it was you know that that that area where it's like you know dallas nashville carolina and i know my geography is not perfect on this but that spot is where hockey is really growing and so if you're the nhl you do
Starting point is 00:57:10 have to go back to Atlanta if you're gonna if you're gonna make this happen and I I also think when you look at the way that Vegas went and you look at the way that Seattle's gone how can you look at this and think anything else other than they I think they know what they're doing I understand doubting head office on policy on rules on player safety I get it but when it comes to business I caught on board with it I'd love another team yeah I I mean there's always the worry about worrying uh watering down the the product which is the biggest hunk of shit i've ever heard the product is better than it was uh in 2016 it's better than it was in 1991 when they were 22 teams and people said that's when hockey peaked right but you're old i brought old i brought
Starting point is 00:57:54 up 2016 because i'm pretty sure everyone listening to the show remembers it and uh there's two more teams but one of them won the cup another one of them won a round like it's it's not the the they've matched the leafs in playoff performance the kraken already gosh darn like i do not uh watch today's game and enjoy it less than when i was a kid um and that is that's one thing i'm really happy about i never want to be one of those guys who goes you know what it's not like you used to be no i go out and every day i watch hockey and i go holy shit i've never seen someone do that like that's part of the reason we're still doing this is i love it more and more every time i watch it um so they've got to be doing something right um you know can there be at some point there's
Starting point is 00:58:48 going to be there's going to have to be a cap on this um i don't know that there is well like i don't think that there is like 40 teams okay then that's fine then you yeah then you 40 teams no what i don't know so i got a lot of shit uh and a lot of support on both sides when i i i said that here's where i think the nhl should be in the next 10 years these are the markets i think oh man you i i didn't read any of it adam but you had so many quote tweets oh yeah people were angry so here's where i think they should be i think they should be in atlanta yep i think they should be in houston yep i think they should be in salt lake city sure i think they should be in kansas city maybe quebec city yes mexico city interesting anything else with the city at the end of it i
Starting point is 00:59:27 think that they should be in that city as well as long as it says city panama panama city let's go no but here's here's what i and i said that includes having the coyotes stay where they are and if the coyotes were to move then you need a team in arizona eventually you do the reason i say all that and people like i said oh yeah there's only 30 team lee uh i couldn't possibly think beyond the box is that i i feel like sometimes i feel like with hockey fans i'm living in the twilight zone and and it's like do you watch any other sport can i do that for you no okay like a like a lot a lot of sports fans don't actually okay so what you'll notice with other sports yeah that make more money and are bigger is that there's a lot more clubs and to
Starting point is 01:00:13 say that the nhl like listen are the are are the leafs making a western road swing through carolina every year in a 40 team league probably not means you probably got to go divisional western you know like you're probably you're probably changing the way these teams play each other i get it especially like 40 to me is the magic number where i'm like all right we got to rethink this why no no i think that you're thinking way too small no no rethink like how the schedule made and schedule is well yeah yeah the league you go you go four you go four divisions of 10 yeah might even have uh like would you have five rounds of playoff yeah like of course you would you would you i don't think the nhl right now shouldn't be 16 teams it should be a 20 like i think i feel
Starting point is 01:00:57 like there needs to be a plan there's there there's a very uh good case to make the nhls right right now as it is with 20 teams in the playoffs it's because the there's too many teams missing the playoffs at this point with expansion they never expanded the playoffs as well but that's besides the point i think when they go to 40 teams or 38 or 36 or whatever the playoffs will be 25 ish teams and then you have a couple different rounds a couple different buy-in uh play-in situations and i think that'll be perfectly fine like you're keeping the schedule at 82 obviously so everybody doesn't have to play everybody but there's a there's a very good case this should be a 40 team league and i think there's a very good case that you know hockey has been pretty
Starting point is 01:01:37 you know it's taken a long long time truly to get to this point 100 years for hockey to get to just this point and in any business growth cycle you're going to see times where you know it takes a while to establish and then you'll see a big spurt and then it'll kind of hold steady for a while and another big spurt and we've seen that in the in this in at the end of the 60s you had you doubled the size of the league uh at the beginning of the 80s you bought you brought in four whl franchises at the beginning of the 90s you brought in another what is it four teams and then at the and the end of the 90s you brought in four more teams right florida san jose ottawa tampa ottawa yeah i think are the four and then and then you brought columbus nashville atlanta and minnesota
Starting point is 01:02:17 back yep um and then so so here's the reason that i don't think like i said 10 years right i'm not saying tomorrow no but but the idea that the nhl is just going to stick to these teams and people were like but it was never like that before how could it be like that now there's a couple reasons all right six teams it's it's way we go gdp it's population growth it's corporate sponsorships available and and i threw quebec city in there because i know it's it's the smallest of those markets by far i threw it in there because i know that the corporate dollars are there to support in canada especially with quebec companies it's not it's going to be run like the winnipeg jets They are going to light money on fire.
Starting point is 01:02:55 But at the end of the day, if you get a rich enough owner who cares about the asset value versus the year-to-year income, it's possible. I think teams like the Jets are going to be a real rarity. Real rarity. I actually think the bigger the league gets, the more viable they become. Really? Especially if you switch to a revenue-sharing model. Because the bigger...
Starting point is 01:03:15 In a rev-share model like what the league has, although it's very limited, don't let... It's so funny the way that the league says that, oh, we share revenue and that's what keeps the small teams afloat. Absolutely not. The Coyotes get like a $5 million check at the end of the year. It's like nothing.
Starting point is 01:03:30 But what you need to understand is that if you have a proper rev share model and a bunch of big teams, and you have to be in Houston, you have to be in Atlanta, you must be in those markets. Those teams are going to make more money as you develop them and they mature as markets
Starting point is 01:03:47 and they're going to help support the smaller teams. And the NHL has got to do something different than the NFL and the NBA. They have to be more aggressive if they're going to stay within this, you know, and they're not there anymore. The big four professional sports leagues, they're just not. And so they're going to have to start reaching out to communities. One of the areas that I think is a enormous area for growth for them is the Latino community in the southern United States.
Starting point is 01:04:13 They've talked about that in the L.A. Times. austin matthews being a pivotal you know a pivot point on that because he is latino and i think you've got an opportunity to engage people that you've never engaged before with a player like that and with the players that are coming up i also know and i've seen it on youtube that hockey is better than it's ever been better than it's ever been in the minor leagues if you open it up to to eventually 40 teams eventually you're gonna have more guys like zegras who come in and they piss off the old guys like Tortorella, but there's too many teams for a guy like Torts
Starting point is 01:04:48 to keep a lid on it, right? I think there is really with hockey, it's such a great game. Other than the expense of having the arena that you have to put ice in, there's absolutely no reason why these markets couldn't be viable. And it's interesting that people are like Mexico City,
Starting point is 01:05:05 they don't know shit about hockey. First off, there's 30 million people in Mexico City. So if you're telling me you can't fill 18,000 seats, then you've done a bad job at business. go into any coffee shop in like markham and start a conversation about the leafs and you'll find plenty of people in a huge hockey market who don't know shit about hockey well yeah and then and then here's the other thing about mexico city the mexican the mexican economy is poised to surge over the next 10 years it is on a it's on a roll right now it's on a really big growth pattern
Starting point is 01:05:33 mexico city is like one of the places to visit in north america it's always one of the top 10 lists This is where I think this is going. And I think we got to, I know hockey fans are a little bit insular on these things, but we got to think bigger than this. Look at the way the Europeans handle soccer. You know, every country has its own leagues and then they do the UEFA and they do the Champions League,
Starting point is 01:05:55 whatever it is they do. I'm not saying we have to do exactly their format, but more teams does mean more money. More teams means more jobs for players. More teams means more people growing up watching hockey and wanting to play it i think that's a good thing like you know for some reason you you triggered in me uh the let's do that hockey sketch oh yeah from saturday night chance the rapper yeah and too many people thought that was funny and not completely and utterly humiliating
Starting point is 01:06:25 it is your sport's a joke it's a joke it's not to you you like it but that means to like a crazily unsustainable for your business model swath of the united states thinks of your sport as a non-option but hockey has closed its doors to those people it always was an exclusive sort of thing it was it's a it's a funny sketch but it's an indictment of like i think the nhl knows it too yeah oh yeah a hundred percent a hundred and luckily that i've uh they've gotten chance the rapper involved in in stuff good which is funny i i doubt it's made him watch more hockey games i don't know but uh it's you know some good has come from it but like the sketch was born from no one likes the sport yeah it's bad i i built the perfect 40 team nhl i think it'd be 40 teams
Starting point is 01:07:22 uh 30 make the playoffs the first few rounds are single elimination knock oh i love that i think and then we go down and then we get to 16 and then we get 16 the first two rounds of the 16s or five game series and then we go back to seven once we get to that second round of the 16 teams but here are your four additional west and east let's do it if you don't say oshawa i'm kicking you out of the oshawa oshawa oshawa oshawa eight teams in oshawa no i disagree it should be three oshawas and one peterborough so we have a team to hate in the west you go salt lake city portland houston kansas city four west teams right there very easy eastern conference atlanta quebec city milwaukee toronto interesting i really they're so hesitant to even look at
Starting point is 01:08:15 pulling that lever a the second team in toronto because you have to ask mlse to do it and i think it's a i don't know how mlse got that deal it's an automatic no from uh the blue and the red guys who own all the cell phones. Imagine the Rangers were like... I don't know who they are. Tell us. If the Rangers had the same deal, New Jersey and the Islanders wouldn't exist.
Starting point is 01:08:36 I wonder if New Jersey is technically out of the radius enough. Because that's why Mr. Balsillie went so hard at Hamilton. Because he could do it there. He's a little out of that scope where MLSC can tell them no. Feels like New York should have a
Starting point is 01:08:50 come on rule. Where like, hey, no one else can be here. And you should be able to go, come on it's new york you're too big you can't just have new york it's it's ridiculous at that we've reached this far and a second team in toronto isn't even a discussion like it's every every sport that has a market this size and a fan base this large has two teams and belleville buccaneers we're doing it uh what do you guys think of those east and west team i like that i like a portland team it can work here's here here's what you do you want a portland team
Starting point is 01:09:24 engage phil knight he's trying to buy the blazers uh yeah phil knight uh the guy who created nike uh he's been trying to buy the blazers for years he grew up a fan there there's an arena already yeah just put the team there it's easy phil knight you're okay then now you own the the hockey team it's only a matter of time before he buys the blazers um yeah absolutely i think in all of those markets the quebec city arena that's not nhl it's 15 5 which is about on par with at least what the one was proposed is it was built right that's what i don't i was never clear on but i'm pretty sure it was supposed to be winnipeg sized so i was just looking um i'm sorry thank you for that did they build the arena in quebec yeah the videotron center yeah they did right uh you're not
Starting point is 01:10:09 gonna believe what freddie anderson's i can't believe it i can't believe it let's talk how many games did he play 66 sorry i know i was i was looking at um uh i don't know how you're gonna make it through the vip episode by the way my uh we got some kate middleton to dive into and it's deep we're going deep man the videotron center in quebec city is the 19th largest indoor arena in north america and the third largest that does not host an nhl team and so they're ready if you're bad at geography like me you're like but portland and seattle are right next to each other no no no they're a three-hour drive apart no those are i didn't know i didn't know i haven't been there i haven't been different states too oregon and washington you know what you know i can never
Starting point is 01:10:54 get down in my head where colorado is i always it's always in the center it's along the uh i always thought colorado was like on the west coast ish oh i was like in the center of vegas yeah no when i discovered that i blew it blew my mind i'm sorry americans but canadian every time i fly over it like the i've been to california and uh nevada a few times every time i look at the map and it's like oh you're flying over colorado i'm like no i'm not no i'm in the middle of the country that's a hoax now i'm on side with all the people who think australia is fake well this is a lie i think where portland is is kind of where i call it but more a little more west you know what i mean yeah but that's where it is in my mind the mountains the thing
Starting point is 01:11:39 is is that denver and vegas um are like denver is the wet side vegas is the dry they're right there yeah well it's all the mountains block the moisture right so that's why you have a desert like nashville's east of chicago shut the front door that's not i'm just looking at my phone right that's impossible dallas there's no way dallas and winnipeg are almost like a straight line north south to each other oh stop it oh shit yeah yeah stop it how dare you yeah that's no no just no you're gonna keep saying no but that like i don't know where i thought kentucky was but not there we should we should pull out that the american states game where you got to put the states on the oh that's hard oh my gosh yes you like you like geography maddie love
Starting point is 01:12:23 geography yeah so we're just trying to guess where all the states go i think i would do better with a map of asia the american state well there's 50 of them that's why there's some big countries in major i would uh oh the northeast too hey name all the little ones and i'm like oh shut up oh that's impossible we're in delaware like no i don't know they're all boston like thank you like i don't care i don't care if it's massachusetts new hampshire rhode island they're all boston yeah connecticut no you're boston no my favorite suburb of boston is hartford yeah yeah and then you get to new york i always thought of Yeah, which is half an hour away.
Starting point is 01:13:06 One I always got was... New York being on the ocean is always crazy. Yeah, oh yeah, sorry, New York City. Yes, yes, yes, yeah. I always thought of Vermont as somewhere near Denver and it's right under Montreal. No, no. For whatever reason, I was like, wait a second,
Starting point is 01:13:20 Vermont's right there when we went to Montreal a couple of years ago. And I was like, oh yeah. All right. Okay, I don't know how to word this. Vermont sounds landlocked. landlocked it's um you know what i mean it's technically on the saint lord seaway um no but it sounds landlocked it does sound landlocked yeah it's not but it yeah because he remember
Starting point is 01:13:42 one of the 13 colonies they had to be on some sort of water right like illinois yeah you got some water michigan oh you must have some water vermont nah it's a bunch i don't know if illinois well i guess illinois got like no they're they're on the lake yeah yeah okay no you got vermont's just rocks it sounds very rocky and bernie sanders st louis being west and south i guess south makes sense but like west of where illinois and chicago is i always think of st louis as where nashville is oh i think you know we're spending a bonus episode right now yeah no not at all because also if you want to see something kind of crazy look at minnesota and then look at ontario above it and it's like there's so much well just there's it's like toronto and then there are major
Starting point is 01:14:29 cities in there but like we're sorry minor cities in there but there's just ontario is so big and it's a 20 what did they say it's a 24 hour drive from ontario from toronto to to like thunder bay no no to manitoba yeah well so like i've never done it and uh i got news for you i'm not gonna no not into that no there's uh yo this is nuts um they have planes and i like them and i think i'd rather do that yeah yeah even with all the boeing news oh shit yo that's crazy that's crazy without looking can you describe where indiana is oh man um well like any state that's kind of next to it or attached to it well their mayor is reggie miller um has to be is it connected to illinois that's correct easter west side
Starting point is 01:15:26 north no i don't know i don't know that's where wisconsin is when you said oh damn when you said easter west i'm like well i've already lost is it touching michigan a little bit yeah okay to which side also north michigan is to the north of indiana okay great there you go i like this geography lesson missouri no missouri is on the way on the other side oh fuck um and uh vermont the south of indiana is kentucky like no no i think i'm being punked by big map you think kentucky is where mississippi alabama georgia is it feels that way the kentucky no you know kentucky should be down here kentucky is dangerously close to the big lakes that that's crazy kentucky is right next to ohio like that's impossible wait so sorry the cleveland cavaliers
Starting point is 01:16:29 play in a state that borders kentucky yeah you made that a majority of the state absolutely not not a chance if you keep driving south through ohio because you can drive easily to cleveland yep from toronto we did that in uh high school that was we had a grade 12 trip there and you just keep like five hours isn't it yeah it's not bad and you hit kentucky and you're right there that's impossible you made that up there's a lie anyway it's fun don't believe it you made that map on ms paint last night that's impossible some news here upper deck is planning to release two pwhl hockey card products before the end of 2024 hopefully one in season this year smaller set and they said it has some physical components this is from alex wathy um and then one in the
Starting point is 01:17:12 summer and fall more like their core products i'm assuming that would be like the jerseys and the thing you know the cards that are real special edition ones oh yes uh and they said larger in scale robust and potentially autographs in the product which is kind of cool i like that i like they did plan one for the phf but i don't think it i just think the business minutiae didn't work out because i think they were purchased and and then it went away but uh it good to see that happening do you still i wanted to ask you do you still collect hockey cards uh not as much as i used to because it used to be a lot more of a buy and sell thing and then i realized i was just collecting them i was just holding on to them and now every time i get cards i'm like leo might like
Starting point is 01:17:55 this ah now i'm gonna buy those and oh isla might like this and you know leo might be trading cards with isla and no no i miss my university days where i would sell a card at the flea market for 30 and i would think i was the world's richest man you're a hustler i was an absolute hustler this will buy me a ticket downtown and maybe a meal learn all the pretentious things like It's in the hard plastic sleeve And you get it out without touching it By banging your wrist together All that jazz
Starting point is 01:18:28 Selling one of one Mark Savard card for $60 Going to the bar twice It was great When you could go to the bar for $30 Yeah, now you cannot You can go, you just get to look around You don't get to do much
Starting point is 01:18:44 One beer, please Alright, should we do the press conference? Or is there more you want to hit? Yeah, the other PWHL news you missed there is April 20th, they're going to break the record that they just set at Scotiabank Arena because they're going to play Toronto in Montreal at the Bell Centre, which is a higher capacity than Scotiabank Arena. So the all-time attendance record that they just set,
Starting point is 01:19:05 they're probably going to break it on April 20th at the Bell Centre. Toronto can't let this stand. Toronto must respond. How? I think the way to respond is next season, next season, Toronto's got to play an outdoor game at BMO Field, capacity 36 000 is it when when you when you get the uh when you get the risers put it but they bring in the gray cup seat that's right bring the gray cup seats back they can do it
Starting point is 01:19:27 outdoor game they can do it and and have montreal and host them and show them who's boss i laugh because it's embarrassing hey bemo field concessions free idea millions of dollars just give us a press pass sell snow pants at the venue that's all that's all free idea i don't hate millions of dollars i would buy snow pants there for sure yeah because everyone's going to show up there and go oh holy shit i'm unprepared like every outdoor game ever here's the problem with that the problem with that steve and then we'll go to the press conference is by that time they'll be fanatic snow pants and they'll be see-through fuck yeah let's do the press conference two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar

Starting point is 01:21:03 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. The Presser SDP. The Steve Dangle Press Conference. I think because Montreal, the Bell Centre, is one of the highest capacities in the NHL just because of the extra seats they have there in the arena. So I wonder, how do they break this record again unless you go outdoor or something like that? That's one of my little pet peeves about the NHL. They always show, oh, the Montreal Canadiens sold out 103%.
Starting point is 01:21:31 No, you didn't. Your numbers is wrong. You can't sell at 103%. The numbers is wrong. Yeah, why not? Because 100% is the most percent. No, what if they have more than the capacity in there? What, did you set up a bunch of fold-up WWE chairs? Like, what are you talking about? Yeah, they got people.
Starting point is 01:21:49 No, you sold out 100%. They got people standing in there because they care about hockey. What are you, are you breaking the fire code? What's going on? It's a lie. Starting point is 01:27:15 was canucks talk it favorite to be named coach of the year according to nhl.com voters talk it rocket oh i like that i like it um oh talk it rocket coach of the year what's the coach of the year jack adams right well he's he's like patched together a really good team so like patch adams you know what yeah i was thinking like there's got to be like a he's got it in the pot in pocket like you know canucks talk it favorite to be named coach of the year according to nhl.com voters talk it fuel oh i like that talking it up pocket talking that's what i was gonna go with no pocket talking pocket fuel go give it to us
Starting point is 01:28:13 jesse pocket fuel is a very good guess but nhl.com went with wait high five oh that's you guys went with the wrong part of rick talk it's name you know what they went with rick roll that's not a boo that's a good one that's extremely good that's a good one sometimes we got to call them on their shit but usually they have a good one yeah okay he's looking like you know what that's clever yeah last thing here nhl on instagram had a graphic from nhl edge and they had the top goal scorers from every area in the uh in the zone and they also had outside inside the neutral zone and there's one in particular that we need to talk about who leads from a certain area and if i can just pull up the graphic here as i kill time here we
Starting point is 01:29:04 go maddie it's there here are the top goal scorers by area if you look at all of the area i'm going to describe it for everybody on audio we have the entire inside of the blue line and then one player outside the blue line but inside the blue and this cornered off all of the areas on the ice and net front there's there's two little positions one very close to the net and then one just outside of that very close in that area zach hyman leads all nhl players from that area with 31 goals in front of the net from the front of the net no other player in any other quadrant of the zone has more than nine goals from their individual spot on the ice and matthews is not mentioned anywhere on there and zach hyman has 31 from his top area jacob bernard docker is on
Starting point is 01:29:56 this graphic and austin matthews is not jacob bernard docker leads from the closest spot to the blue line on the right side of the ice for him and besser with two outside of the blue line which yeah besser better sitting up here just chilling what i think is first off there's two things i think are cool it shows that matthews scores from a bunch of different spots which is good for the Leafs so I'm a Leaf fan second Zach Hyman knows exactly what his assignment is get in front of the net bang and crash score and if you're playing the Edmonton Oilers whoever they are playing in the first round whoever it ends up being you must neutralize that like I know you got Leon Dreisaitl off to the side with six I think you can manage that you gotta stop Zach Hyman
Starting point is 01:30:36 you gotta stop him it shows to me it shows what a great fit he is in Edmonton he's amazing because not only like he does get the puck uh there himself sometimes and obviously he's able to finish the oilers are the ones feeding them yep and that's not what they had him doing here they they're like all right go into the corner zach you do all the grunt work and we'll figure it out yep and uh it's a shame because i feel like we saw this in him we saw what this player was capable of and he had just started to crack the code then he went to edmonton and he's one of the best goal scores in the sport i think it's incredible that he's scored three times as many goals as anybody else from their most scored in areas and he says 31 is a ridiculous number and if you're game
Starting point is 01:31:22 planning you know what you need to do don't let zach hyman get to his area if you combine the two areas that nikita kucherov owns it's still barely over half of hyman in his area i think it shows how much the best goal scorers in the league spread out their offense like you're you're mentioning matthews like he scores from everywhere and that's why he's not amongst these leaders but just to have one guy feast on something like that is so rare well even like pasta i know scores from there kucherov i know scores from there i never would have guessed it's that's that seldomly yeah you'd think it's more 100 yeah you think it's so much more but it's not and also if because the NHL was responding to some comments on the
Starting point is 01:32:07 post on Instagram, and somebody asked, what about behind the net? Because it's not on the graphic. And they said, Willie has scored three times from behind the net. You're joking! Amazing! If there was an area behind the goal, and there should be, where the graphic starts, it would be William Nylander.
Starting point is 01:32:24 You know what? They should have included that. Yeah, he's down here. He has his spot at the top of the zone on the left side, but yeah, he would have been up here. Well, I mean, you got Besser in the neutral zone. You should put Willie behind the net. That's funny. That is funny.
Starting point is 01:32:37 I like that. Yeah. I like that. Who is next to Claude Giroux? I don't recognize that person. Oh, Voronkov. Yeah. They have those names here.
Starting point is 01:32:48 Okay. Yeah. Good player. Yeah. Dowdy with nine goals from the top of the, from right in front of the blue line. What year is it? Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 01:32:56 Nine goals. Nine goals. Like, shout out Dowdy. That contract, it was supposed to age pretty bad right away. Looks like it's been pretty good so far for LA and for Dowdy. He looks like Hagrid if he had no giant blood. You think so? Yeah, look at him.
Starting point is 01:33:11 With no teeth and the beard? Blimey, Ari. Blimey, Pierre, you got to start pulling your weight down here. Start four-checking or something. Any takeaways from this graphic besides Hyman? No, it's a cool graphic. Kucherov is a beast. If you're a goalie facing out, it's from the left side.
Starting point is 01:33:32 But if you're facing the goal, it's the right side. He's a beast. But we knew that. Kucherov is a beast. Always has been. And I'm sure hoping the Leafs don't have to play him in the playoffs. Then you get past that. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:45 Freaking past that. Hopefully they get to play all the bad teams. You think Anaheim will sneak in to play the Leafs? Yeah, but then they'll be hot and you don't want that. There's no easy road to the Cup, folks. Stop hoping for it. Yep. And they had one once.
