Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal.
One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor
to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows.
And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself.
And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
What if I don't want to?
I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals.
see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task
rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance
mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have
been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your

the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go okay you messed up what oh no what'd he do oh no he uh the camera was definitely on
adam when uh it was said my name way to go new guy
boo producer hayden wow inauspicious start man hayden mev booze and oh wow wow sorry great yeah
that's a good way to start things off yeah no that's great well no no yeah hey listen you you
kicked us off we didn't kick you off oh yeah big shoes to fill already and i've just fallen right
out of them all right so let's talk a little bit about the rest of the summer yeah because we've
got news to hit today we've got i think now that the dust has settled a little bit on july 1st we
can we can kind of talk a little bit about toronto i want to talk a little bit of ottawa talk a
little montreal talk a little some of the some of the other moves minnesota's on the on the list
today but the first thing i think and most important is vip if you are a member of our vip
maybe you were gifted a subscription maybe you're a longtime subscriber i want you to know that we
do subscription stuff all the way through august so if you are a vip subscriber you get one every
week and that means that throughout august where we take time off uh every friday morning you're
gonna get a brand new steve dangle podcast it's friday morning right we may shift the drop date
because it's the one episode of the week maybe we'll go like middle of the week or something
yeah you have something to look for yeah yeah okay so that so that's that's one thing that's
really important number two is starting next week we are going to twice a week uh and that means
that uh first off it means that we can take the content and bring only the good stuff because if
we had to continue to do three episodes a week through july i'll tell you you'll be bored no
more of this garbage
that we're feeding you now yeah well
I mean it's gonna be way better
the news is great this week but it falls
off a cliff and all the insiders are
already on vacation yeah LeBron
tweeted like July 1st he's like I'm already at the
cabin yeah by 8 o'clock they're like
okay I'm done yeah see you in September
on Labor Day Bob McKenzie
would notoriously like be like
this guy signed in two years okay but
like on the way
to the cottage I wonder if he just
had a member of his family drive him up there just to like complete like tweet on the way
be like okay let me just finish this off before we get to the cottage and then then that's the
message i would put out publicly yes hey well no he's not driving i'm saying having a member of
his family oh of course he's not okay well all right so otherwise you're like a four-hour drive
to the cottage now um so those are the two things if you're not already aware of our vip it is
basically outside of sort of what we talk about here this show when we launched it um in my mom's
basement but also in the backup studio at rogers it was an hour of hockey and then an hour of
whatever the you know and jesse and i would just bring over a lot of the stuff that we'd already
talked about a kiss and be like hey that might work on steve dangle podcast as well and then
after a while we became so entrenched in hockey and the expectations grew and the audience grew
that we were like okay well we'll you know what we'll do we'll just do a hockey and then we'll
add a third episode a week because we only used to do two uh you talk more about pikachu today
than the flyers that's right you guys suck and it wasn't even an hour of each it was like 30
minutes of each because the shows used to be an hour back that's well no they were 90 minutes
they were 90 minutes we were an hour for a long time like when i joined the shows were an hour
oh i don't remember that the intention was certainly an hour and then uh and then that
third episode a week became also hockey so uh now this is our chance to kind of to step outside and
talk about things like that really awkward renal or a messy statue not the renaldo statue was also
awkward but the messy one the messy one just outdoes it completely that's on this week's show
we talk a little about kawaii we talk a little bit about before the trade actually happened for
anybody who's confused about when the you heard the episode and when we talked about it we recorded
before the trade was actually official i saw it went up this morning and i went oh well also i
want to throw it well no we we said on the show we're like hey if this trade happens this is going
to be super relevant the other thing i want to say is they the raptors have not announced the
kawaii trade they can't until july 6th that's when the actual date of the transactions can
be completed because of the wonky nba calendar okay got it yeah that makes sense now uh i want
to talk a little bit about um let's just get into the hockey stuff can we get into the hockey stuff
yes oh just if you're not aware of how to subscribe to vip and the benefits of it um on apple you can
subscribe right on the same podcast feed you're listening to if you're listening on apple podcast
you'll see that you can just hit subscribe, you'll get the show ad free. So you'll get this
program ad fee if you're a subscriber on Apple, Spotify, it is a separate feed. So if you're on
Spotify, just search for SDP VIP. And in there you get video and ad free and the extra episode.
And then on YouTube, we have two different tiers. So you can get the episode ad free each week at a
higher tier. And then you could just get the VIP episode there as a regular SDP VIP subscriber.
those are like the gifted subs you'll get in the chat sd sdp vip ad free is four ad free shows
every week yes like our regular episodes that you're hearing each week those three that you get
are ad free plus the extra bonus vip episode sorry four ad free shows during the hockey season
yeah three ad free shows for the next month then one yeah whenever the podcast full episode regular
episode you can access that one ad freeze and spotify apple or youtube wherever you want to
consume it it is there and there's a discount with apple right if you buy the full year yeah
so apple has this fun feature where you can do a year-long subscription and that one if you want
to choose that one it'll come very discounted yeah yeah which is cool so those are all your
options and we'll talk you know we always hit those a lot on the live streams we don't talk
about that enough no never um but i think it's just because we want to get to the news and you
know what let's get to the news the least made some signings this morning and i only know what
two of them are uh and well you you know the you know the relevant ones the other ones i'm going
to see okay so the oh the irrelevant ones are my bread and butter though so the leafs have signed
uh vinnie letary love it culver cup champion uh they signed samuel lavai get wrecked hayden
samuel lavai who had a run in the nhl from what i remember did he not uh no it was at the olympics
oh crazy at the olympics okay all right slow back yeah slovakia uh henrik rabinsky
oh are you talking about the two from yesterday uh well that's what they've announced today
freaking ripped me off this sucks and cole mcward yes okay so you know you know rabinski and more
did you did you know i know of them from yesterday no okay all right you were at my house you will
i know i was no i didn't are you going to be doing are you going to be doing a video on this
yeah what can you tell us about these people right now okay so the the two from yesterday
nothing i can't really no i can't i'm sorry um uh they did get two-year nhl deals or at least
one of them did which i know is a pretty big deal dude vinnie letary i'd be perfectly comfortable
having him play nhl games uh for the leafs calder cup champion vaporizes pucks like
such a good score at that level he's just unfortunately one of those tweeners right
like he's 31 this isn't a prospect he's just one of those guys who rips up the ahl offensively
he has played some games in the nhl i think mostly with boston um i'd be perfectly comfortable with
him playing games for the league i think that's very important for you to say that they're not
prospects here yeah people hear these names and they're like oh we signed a bunch of like 21 year
old no we're gonna be amazing in like two years but no these are like middle 20s guys and one
30 year old there who are who are death pieces what you're talking about here at the high end
like best case scenario is these guys end up being like bobby mcmahon where oh no no best case
best best like high very unlikely best case like mcmahon didn't break into the nhl until he was
like 26 7 something like that even darren radish like maybe that's honestly and you know you're
correct now rat radish the difference is when he was signed like there was some fanfare like i mean
when he was it signed his first nhl contract with chicago i think um there was some fanfare like oh
man this guy killed it in the ohl and then it wasn't until his third team that he finally got
into nhl games um he was traded straight up for peter holland yeah radish didn't play an nhl game
till the 21 22 season at the age of 25 what is what was right after then 2013 2014 that would
it be seven years before 2018 yeah around then okay interesting 2018 or 19 still like wow right
it took him a while so like at the very very high end your best case scenario you're looking at
something like bobby mcmahon letary's not even that the man is in his 30s right like this already
31 he's a tweener he's a tweener um and then hlavai is the one guy you could maybe sort of
consider a prospect he's still young ish damn 25 25 viddy letary's played 155 nhl games yeah man
like i'm i wasn't making it up i wasn't blowing smoke wow yeah sorry no no he could play uh
hlavai is interesting goalies tend to mature later and isn't he younger than hildeby
i think they're the same age he'd be like one year older than aktyomov okay um but the leafs
goaltending situation has completely changed over the last couple weeks right so you add bob
cool you lose wool you lose um hildeby you didn't qualify pexa who was like deep deep deep down
you're excited for actimov and that's great and everything but you need at least four goalies
in your organization the leafs used four at least used five i think wool stolars primo played some
games actimov hildeby yeah man and you don't include james reimer oh my god in a pre-season
game and then you need at least four yeah right um because all it takes is one guy to get hurt
someone's getting called up and then you don't want your ahl team completely suffering so now
they got four and i wouldn't be surprised to see them at the fifth a lot of people are high on
how to have i like a lot of people there's a lot of hype around lab high you mean i think
i think it's cool that the least went out and just are taking a chance here if i'm not six four
218 numbers weren't great in the ahl no they were poor but i don't know how the iowa wild are
potential there uh if i'm not mistaken he was an rfa who the wild just didn't qualify exactly
yeah hayden's nodding yes right here so ufa no qualifying offer i don't know man you could do
worse than that you could do worse than that yeah it's a good it's a good chance and goaltenders
are funky where you're talking about like this is the one guy you were saying that might be
something because he's 25 but your goalie might not get good until 28 because he's a goaltender
and goalies are weird and just ahl all numbers but ahl goalie numbers are not
apples to oranges like actually i've absolutely killed it
hlav i struggled and at the nhl level who knows maybe hlav is even better i don't know
um uh do you know what the waiver situation is with him uh i can tell you in a moment after i
look it up sure because we know aktimov doesn't need to clear a big reason why hildeby was traded
is he did have to clear and when they signed bob we all knew like we called this out in the moment
uh they're either running three goalies or they're trading dennis hildeby and then they traded him
mr is waivers exempt awesome oh that's a great situation to have two waivers exempt goalies
because you usually heading into a season,
a lot of teams are like,
all right, well, we just got to cross our fingers.
Yeah, would they put them through on that one day
where no one gets claimed?
They try.
Because everybody's out there?
Or they try to game it like the Leafs did
with Martin Jones a few years ago.
Where they gave him a $100,000 bonus on that day?
Yeah, and NHL teams are cheap,
and they're like, whoa.
He might help us,
but I don't want to pay 100 grand.
Like 100 grand to your NHL team?
To a billionaire and be like,
oh, I don't know about that 100 grand.
boy there's levels to this pro sports thing that's crazy that that would stop you from doing
how i've got one waivers exempt season left uh the 27 28 season he'll start to need waivers or
if he played 60 nhl games which i don't think he's gonna do between right now and september
when there are no nhl games i think we're good i think we're good yeah i think this is i mean
listen they're they're dev signings whatever you know one of the things i think that everybody
thinks when um when an ahl team wins a calder cup uh is that or a calder trophy excuse me uh
is that they they're like well that must be a great farm system and you have to look at the
way the marlies are built unless it's the marlies winning it and then everyone goes oh they're old
well they they are uh and they were but here's the thing i think that maybe the maple leaves
are looking at this differently is is getting good veteran help on the marlies is helpful for
the guys that are young and that you are developing like you don't need just a group of kids down
there you can have professional hockey players who are really sound ahl players you can give them
in toronto a really good life in terms of like you know making them comfortable and i mean i know the
marlies have cut back significantly on their travel budget so they're taking like buses where
they didn't used to but the the thing is um a guy like easton cowan going down there and playing so
well you know he doesn't have to be the the star although he became a star there was already guys
on that team that had carried them through the season ben danford jumping in in the third round
i was thinking about him this morning ben danford played five rounds of playoff hockey this year oh
because he played with branford right he played three rounds in the ohl got eliminated and then
i i think he played at least two with the marley yeah he started in the third rounds that's crazy
that's a lot i was because he's not at the prospect camp right now and he shouldn't be
well i was like oh oh wait no he played five rounds of playoff but the organization was
thrilled with the way he played oh he was great the thing is though they won if you have an ahl
team that's waiting for a guy like ben danford well if we just get ben danford then now we'll
be okay ben danford should be your value add he should not be um your your stud defenseman coming
in at 19 years old or whatever he is and i think that's where i i like sort of the idea that
they're going to just keep having some good veterans down there good character guys it
sort of reminds me of the marlies they started to build about 12 years ago remember they started
getting guys like um ben smith uh and there was a guy i think his last name was johnston who was
just the weight room guy uh oh man who i forget he was like a fighter and he's not ross johnston
but he like did not play he was like player coach right he played like eight games out here uh and
you know there's other guys that they sort of surrounded and it was like to to help mentor
these guys and put good habits in and also expose them to winning and what it takes i don't think
easton cowan going that deep in the playoffs and being a factor for the marlies hurt him
i think that was quite helpful actually well and i'm just looking at the 2018 roster the number of
guys who went on to play in the nhl even if they didn't end up becoming stars or whatever you can't
just telling me this is a team full of old guys andreas johnson dimitro timoshev trevor moore
has had a very good career justin hall mason marchment makes seven million dollars now wow
sperry captain callie rosen played a bunch martin marincin played after this adam brooks played
after this freddie goche played after this travis dermot nikita sashnikov timothy lilly grin uh
pierre engvall carl grunstrom has played like 350 nhl games uh oh my god and then the goalies
mumbles through garrett sparks calvin pickard yeah is still getting nhl deals played in played
late in the playoff the edmonton oilers he sure did so it helps like it helps to have these types
of guys around and that was something where i think the leafs really especially out of covid
uh and i don't fully fully put that on any team i think it's just covid just kind of scrambled
everybody's circuits and then you know true living didn't care right he wasn't really caring he
didn't care much about what happened in the ahl level so you know they there wasn't a lot of
effort put i think but i think there's going to be a ton of turnover and and the the impression i
get is the marley's were just sort of left to ryan hardy yeah because remember how involved
dubas was in all the uh i mean he was the the difference is he was the marley's gm and then
became Leafs GM but he was very involved in all the 2018 celebrations and everything I haven't
seen Chayka I don't even know if he was on the ice when they won the Calder Cup well he shouldn't be
well he wasn't whatever like he's there you could have justified it watch it's all Ryan Hardy well
and Chayka said after free agency in his media veil that that uh he thought Ryan Hardy was
actually invaluable he's like I didn't know him before I came here he's like buddy he had tons
of valuable things to say and add and he's a member of the team and so ryan hardy's going to
be staying with them going forward i guess he was very impressed with ryan he said i think he's how
could you not be said i think he's a future nhl gm wow i think that's pretty high praise and uh
anyway so like those are i'm listen is that the most exciting news to lead with no but it just
happened before the show so we thought we figured you know we'd hit it i think we underrate the
leafs drafting ability like as of late because you look at the hits that they've had it's a lot
of guys because they haven't been picking very high and they've had so many guys graduate to
the nhl and whether they've stuck around with the leafs or not they've done a good job at least with
other teams to use assets to move them like you look at the dennis hill to be trade and you run
it down matthew nye's second round pick eason cowan was 28th overall um actimov you count that
too even nick robertson he's a second round pick that you've now turned into something they've done
grabenkin was like an overage fifth round pick yeah grabenkin too they got one of the guys were
most hyped about in terms of their system uh turveberg is a seventh round pick uh-huh
that should be a throwaway pick that's that's used on somebody's kid he was like the fifth
last pick that's somebody who's an actual prospect in the system i think underrated make the team out
of camp yeah because they've moved so many of the guys to other teams and grabenkin's i think the
perfect example it's like now they've actually mintin to throw it in there they've done a decent
job if i'm not mistaken both grobenkin and hildeby it wasn't i think both of them had been passed
over in their first year of draft eligibility if i'm not mistaken i might be i don't know you know
circle around you get a piece yeah and whether you use that to bolster your nhl team now like
they've done with grobenkin and mintin when hildeby or if you use those guys on your roster
it's still great drafting to have those assets yeah because the mismanagement of those assets
is not the scouting department's fault yeah yeah no no leave that to the side and turning
dennis hill to be in a nick paul i know there's a couple picks thrown in there like it's a fourth
and a fifth or a third and a fourth or whatever it was pretty i'm okay with it uh yeah yeah uh and
so and we'll talk about i want to you know the dust settled free agent conversation here uh in
a second um but you know you guys know how shitty it is to play in Toronto it's awful you guys know
how yesterday you seen it with the Raptors you see how everybody hates it you know Kawhi wants
to come here and retire here that sucks you know Bo Bichette's crying in the dugout that you know
he's crying because of the abuse that the Blue Jays fans gave him it's it's so manufactured and
forced and small time Tavares was at the Portugal game yesterday duh uh uh oh Adam leave him alone
also also um mckenna was there um and i don't know if you guys saw but uh you know a few of the
um leafs prospects got to go in play some throw some uh some balls around at uh the blue jays
yesterday belecky their second round pick actually looks like he's got a bit of a cannon of an arm
gas yeah he throws gas now he's never in the strike here i got oh my god if you're right if
you want to see it it's it's highlighted the maple leafs posted it so you can we can run it
okay he actually throw he's got no control he's uh for baseball heads baseball lovers
he's among us he's a rick and keel if anybody remembers rick and what's his stuff like
what's alex belecky stuff he's got a great fastball if it doesn't mean you in the noggin
but i think you know i mean first off these guys are just athletes so they're good at everything
yeah um but i i wanted to highlight this because a tavar is just being there somebody texted us
and said or was it you that said he might not be the the hundredth i said he might not be in the
top 25 most famous people in that building which i think is fair yeah tfc game and look at belecky
look at this friggin gas gas that's pretty listen the catcher caught it like good enough man
look at this yeah now okay that was a little off target but like the catcher didn't have to get up
also when you're when you're doing this as a social media person don't stand directly behind
the person like let's get an angle here that's actually a fairly good point um but as you can
see pretty good right yeah look at that that's a strike yeah so you know it's horrible to play
here except for that it's pretty cool because these kids are getting you know going to portugal
games and yeah going to the rogers center throwing a ball around like that how many teams can just
say yeah why don't you come hang out with our baseball team for a little bit three days four
days after you get drafted uh it's a very cool thing i mean if rogers really leverages this
that is a that's great that's awesome and they should i i didn't appreciate until the last few
years how much like getting drafted is like that meme of uh beyond scared straight where they wake
that kid up and they're like get up and they like rush them out of the cell or whatever like you're
at prospect camp like two like 48 hours later kenna was on the ice wearing 72 yeah i mean the
difference is they all seem to be having fun um but yeah like i you jumped right in i didn't yeah
there's no all right we'll see you at camp yep nope uh we'll see you at camp in two freaking
days yep because you have an extra camp say goodbye to your family you're professional now
and it's uh i i thought it was interesting too they asked mckenna about his number because
bobrovsky has worn number 72 recently he wore i think 70 earlier in his career i don't know
um all bob bob yeah i anyway i seem to remember he wore different numbers but 72 has been his
number recently and mckenna was like yeah um i don't i don't need it it's okay he's won cups
he's going to the hall of fame i'm good yeah uh which i i really liked i was like you know what
the every time mckenna has been interviewed and i there were criticisms about this about a year ago
um the the media training he's been given it's not just say nothing and be boring he actually
is a value add as a quote and that could really help your perception and he has confidence too
yeah and he was like yeah like the way he answers it is a very human way and we're just not used to
that with the leaves where they're like robot you know leaves haven't really got a hold of him yet
give it time no i think they're i think this is gonna be different i actually do i think that
they got him he said he's been saying all the right things and i really like the fact that
he's just gonna give it up which is cool i hope bob gets him a rolex anyway just because bob's
got the money why not um but i want to talk to you now i can see bob giving it to mckenna
Giving him, like, the number?
Yeah, letting him have it.
Maybe.
Well, there's a bunch of Leaf fans who have bought McKenna jerseys in the last week who really hope so.
And I think, who's going to be here longer?
That's a good point.
It's funny.
Okay, like, this is, it's a non-issue.
But also, I really do hope the Leafs say something about that soon.
Because there's a bunch of people who are going to want a McKenna, especially.
But also a Bob jersey.
They put out a notice that you can get the new DraftPix jerseys at Real Sports.
Yeah.
They're printing jerseys, so get the numbers right.
Even if you replace the number for free, like what a pain in the ass.
What number are they wearing, guys?
All that wasted thread.
We don't need that.
No.
Yeah, the Nylander thing where they flipped is, if McKenna has to change it,
Nylander's worn like four jerseys.
But remember when you could trade them in and you could get the name?
What happened was.
No, not really.
no so kneelander changed numbers to 88 and he was 39 no 29 29 he was 39 and then he was 29 right
but 62 with the marley's when he switched to 88 though uh he said he tweeted out i remember it he
was like i'm switching to 88 if you have a kneelander jersey bring it to real sports and
they'll change the numbers for free that was that was pre-covid it was a long time ago but that
happened i i hope that they do that and if anybody's bottom account i think settle on the
numbers so then we don't have to do all that yeah that too like okay that's great what a pain in the
ass yeah i can't get the time back but it gets you back but real sports would like it or sports
check would like it because it gets you in the store that's great i won't like it's in the store
sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things
one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean
all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's
a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want
to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing
chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and
i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for
furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's

dangle uh now leafs obviously made a ton of additions and a couple of subtractions and uh
one of the subtractions was nick robertson who said wow it was so horrible there i hated it
uh he didn't actually he said it was hard at times but playing in that market for fans and everything
you wouldn't want anything else he said he's got mixed emotions after finally being traded he said
toronto's always gonna have a special place in my heart wow isn't that easy yeah dude like i mean
he requested a trade but it's not because he's like oh light's too bright it's he wanted more
ice time right yeah that's the beginning middle in it and he's going to get it which is cool for
him and i wish i hope so he the one thing about nick robertson i always respected he was never
not trying busted his ass every single game there was hustle there every single game um i want to
talk a little bit about some of the guys that they signed because i know we talked about it on free
agency day but now that the dust has settled talk a little bit about lineup construction and that
sort of thing the nick paul edition at the time we were drinking out of a fire hose it came late
in the day and for me i was like oh this this looks great and then i instantly moved on but
having a few hours a few days to think about it um if he has a bounce back season because remember
he got injured in september last year didn't play till november fought the injury all year
was in and out in the playoffs and you said when he was playing montreal tampa were noticeably
better with him they looked like a way better team and that's just my opinion i don't have
numbers to support it just visually they look much better he's also a mississauga kid who had
kujo tucker and a couple other guys and i can't remember yeah he had a bunch of the jerseys and
used to take the go train so he knows um that is a pretty key addition and you know we've been
asking for a true third line center for years um i thought it was going to be tavares but it's
difficult to find a 1a or a 2 um tavares can do this it's just for how much longer nick paul in
the meantime i just want to talk about his effect what what it could be on the lineup and you know
why he's probably the 3c well you talk about drinking from a fire hose when we talked about
it in studio i had no idea what his cap it was or how much time he had left on the deal
so three years left three years left i think 3.15 um that wasn't until i got home there were not
players the quality of nick paul who could be had for that term and that dollar case in point
colton sissons makes a lot more 4.25 over a million dollars more and we'll talk about him
more um you didn't give up nothing for him a third a fourth and a goalie who i think is pretty good
um which that hurts but like there aren't a ton of nick pauls in this league he's one of the
he's six four he's one of the heaviest players top 20 heaviest players in the league but can
skate can skate really well took over 500 face-offs um really good playoff performer
i don't remember if he won the cup with st louis or st louis oh my god with uh tampa bay i think
they might have got him after those cups uh because he started his career uh in ottawa but
what a pain in the ass player he's been no cups against the leafs oh okay but what a pain in the
ass player he's been um i'm glad we don't have to play him anymore jesse what do you think about
nick paul i think it fits really well in the lineup it's something they need i know he's a
left shot but he's going to be effective if they play him down the middle he'll be effective there
the puckpedia lineups right now have scissons on as the third line center and paul as the left wing
that probably will change just because the right shots or you can flip them yeah yeah i don't i
think it's just he's a versatile player that'll that's something they didn't really have like
i think almost every position here is wrong yeah i'm serious it's july 3rd like let's not get too
hung up on who's gonna play where i think just what the collection of guys that they've got in
terms of Paul Sissons and Bluger and Duhame they have guys who are just more versatile than the
guys they had last year yeah and I think that's the way you got to build the lineup and we need
people who can do more than just okay like Nick Robertson was very one-dimensional and Jack
Roslevic is going to be kind of in that role here but the rest of the pickups is just they're going
to find different ways to contribute throughout the game I look when the playoffs come around
hopefully they make the playoffs do i think roslevic is going to be on matthew's wing
no when they begin the season yeah probably it's 84 games that's so many games we gotta get used
to saying 84 yeah i know it's weird yeah no i like nick paul like he's gonna be i think an
effective player for them the the toronto maple leafs earlier on in the season later in the season
kind of fell off but they scored 252 goals which was good enough for 15th last year considering
how terrible they were right problem was they allowed 295 good lord and that's holy uh that is
good enough for second most in the league man so when you look at the way this roster is built and
remember again they were among they were top 10 in scoring most of the season then just fell off
at the end because they were awful um the the goals against part is massive jesse if you can
bring that lineup just to just not line up but group of guys back up um hayden go ahead um it's
I look at this and I go, OK, Nick Paul, you know, if you look at his edge data, he is him, Sissons and Bluger are all guys and Duhame are all guys that can skate around 23 miles an hour, which is kind of crazy.
They're all so they're all fast. But beyond that, these are guys that you can play in multiple different positions.
So you're one of the things that I think that they really need to do. It's not just D zone starts for Austin Matthews and John Tavares. It's why is Austin Matthews killing penalties?
i'm not that i have a problem but why don't we just why don't we just use him more five on five
you'd like other options and i understand what you're saying yeah you know like these guys can
kill penalties i'm looking at you know if nick paul can have a rebound season i'm not asking
necessarily for 20 goals let's say it's 15 colton says this maybe gets you 10 i'm not even sure
that's his role on the team ross levitt gets you 20 yeah right that is sort of what you need out
of a third line um i don't expect bluger to score much i don't expect duhaime to score at all uh
dakota joshua is a wild card and steven lorenz doesn't score much either offensively this looks
a little bit more like the team i expected last year like in in a post marner world right losing
domi sucks like in terms of the offense there but the whole thing was you were never going to be
able to replace that player that you're not mckenna is a gift from god that is divine intervention
um paul is perfectly capable sissons can contribute a bit joshua can contribute a bit
bluger can contribute a bit roslevic is obviously a contributor the only guy i expect like literally
zero offense out of is doing right that's basically it and i i look at this i'm like they
picked out three dark holes in their four group that they had last year in terms of domey would
go months without production that's true robertson would be hot and then be scratched and get hot but
he was just so one-dimensional michelli showed up when the season didn't matter and having those
three out of the lineup and replaced with this collection of guys i think it's an improvement
on last year i agree with you because they can all do different things right like all of are you
afraid of nick paul taking a face off in the d zone uh on the penalty kill he took over 550 if
i'm not mistaken with a wrist injury are you afraid of nick paul for checking and you know
being a major part of an energy third line yes um if i'm the other team if i'm yeah yeah if i've got
my back turned and i'm trying to retrieve the puck yeah i'm afraid of nick paul you have like
the amount of huge dudes who can skate is they're bigger than last year are they not i they are i
i don't know oh they are yeah in terms of size i think they are the second or first biggest team
in the league that's crazy nice fast nice could lose 15 pounds and still be 220 like paul's like
230 though the only one thing i'll take away from all the positive here about the guys they brought
in i miss scott lawton oh yeah me too that contract hurt my feelings in this team where
he was so good on the penalty kill and if they had just fucking played him a little bit more
higher in the lineup early on maybe there's a bit a little bit more goal production there but
berube didn't trust him and i i do miss scott lawton i think the penalty kill is gonna miss
him berube's treatment of scott lawton is one of the least explainable aspects of his time in
toronto and everybody loved him in the locker room yeah he was such a such a great locker room guy
that i think that presence will be missed as well they gave up so much for him and we're all like
oh sick a three c oh they're starting a mid-wing it's okay though he'll eventually does not play
a game at center in that first uh season and then the injury in there doesn't help but like
you can't control that situation yes it's a significant amount of time and that that threw
off the lineup training camp where they're like we don't know what to do we don't know what to do
is our one rw uh three c yeah hey we need domey to dish to matthews fuck it third line
so this is this is one of the things i like they could have friggin played david conf
yeah they have like eight oh i know that was brutal but they have like eight legitimate
options at center not including william nylander i know matthews tavaris paul sissons bluger
joshua can do spot work there lorenz can do spot work there we will live you know i i was that
seven i kind of look at this and i go okay so the the bottom six previously oh and grew was a little
slow and a little plotting but effective right like scott lawton's not the fastest skater in
the world whatever but very effective player he was he was speedy like losing him really killed
them oh my god it was over that's when you're throwing in the season yeah and nick waugh wasn't
very he's not like fast not blazing speed nick waugh he's fine i'm just saying i'm not i'm just
when i look at that bottom six forward group you got nick waugh for the playoffs and then
you never made it the the speed there is really interesting because what you want to be to another
team's best players is it just a pain in the ass just in their face block the block the shooting
lanes i love what colton sissons did with nick dowd on that fourth line for vegas and i'm hoping
because nick dowd's one of the best um fourth line centers in the league like he is awesome he was
great and and he's awesome especially in the playoffs i hope whatever season's learned from
him he can bring to the leafs this year the thing with the leafs too is they're going to need those
guys to be quick because i think the the reality of the situation especially if riley's gone is
that that defense core is not that fast and so when you look at fastest teams in the league
the leafs are still not on it and and the reason for that is that defense core is slow and you're
going to have to if you're going to make these breakouts properly you're going to have to get
it to speedy forwards because the defense are they're going to have to make smart plays but
they're not going to be able to outwit you i know darren radish can do fakes and stuff at the line
but darren radish is one of six stetcher is a guy i don't think is going to play every day and i
think they are comfortable with that role emil andre skating's apparently very good i don't
mind oliver eckman larson at 34 35 years old but you know mccabe's a slower guy tan of the slower
guy they're very effective this is not a quick group so somebody's got to have some speed here
it's more important to be a pain in the ass and positionally sound like none of these guys are
going to Quinn Hughes their way up the ice yep right Radish is is a cannon um I'm not overly
worried about that how's your pass right that's what that's what I'm focused on the main point
of contention and I know there's some people that love this signing I'm among them some people that
don't like it at all as a risk signing is Sergey Bobrovsky and his 881 save percentage last year
or is 877 or 877 let's just be honest it was not it's not great now I'm surprised here what do we
know about goalies who play for bad teams uh they get shelled and what do we know about good teams
who have good players that get injured um they also get shelled they become bad teams yes right
so people are debating this morning well what happens if Chris Tanev's bad or Matthews gets
hurt or whatever i'm like well uh listen yeah you're driving on the highway one of your tires
gets punctured yeah you're gonna have a hard time driving you have to assume and hope that you know
maybe you've got run flats on your car but beyond that it kind of sucks if your 50 goal guy goes
down nobody had the panthers finishing bottom 10 last year nobody um i don't remember when
barkov got hurt training camp training camp didn't play a game prior to that nobody said that
and the panthers before they got brady kajak were bar none probably the deepest team in the league
i i think they were top two and they weren't two they still probably are yeah oh it's probably
gotten worse so honestly um and then everyone got hurt like like marshan had to have surgery
barkov had to get fixed up i'm sure he was death by a thousand cuts right because it was barkov
full season and already kachuk wasn't starting the season and marsh and people forget was playing
out of his mind yeah and then he went down yeah right and then reinhardt went down and then i know
they had an injury on d2 i can't remember bob was like the only guy who didn't get hurt exactly and
and he played 50 games but the team was bad he played a shitload of games on a team with no
players i want to look at because you know it's a three-year 21 million dollar deal so he gets
you know seven million a season let's talk about how it's structured because steve pointed this
out to me it was like oh i didn't know it was structured i like this before i found out
i like this deal i was open to it but now i'm like oh okay it's designed to be moved if they
need to so let's have a look at it yeah um as you can see their cap hit av seven million but
the base salary is only 850 grand it's not the matthias michelli deal from arizona where it's
backloaded they're just paying him a signing bonus they already paid it actually two days ago
8.05 million dollars this year 5.8 million dollars the following year on july 1st and then the final
is 4.45 million dollars this is a throwback to something dubas used to do all the time
so what what why does this matter it matters because if you need to pull the chute here
it's easier to move because you've already paid out the majority of the money right like there's
only five million dollars basically or six million dollars left to pay on that last year this deal
mlse has been getting chirped by a lot of people including myself about uh looking cheap in this
new era but one thing that we know rogers will definitely do is spend money on players this is
them throwing their financial weight around which like thank god that's that's such an obvious
advantage that you have over everyone else i don't care what mlse does with their money i don't care
what rogers does with their money that means nothing to me that's for john chica to to
reconcile with the board keith pelly and ownership right so front loading this deal i assume bob is
at least going to give the leafs two adequate years and then it could potentially be a marlo
situation right um you'll be able to move this based on the way it's structured after that third
july first where there's only 950 grand owing right no one cares right and the cap is going
to go through the roof and the Leafs know and it's important that you know right now that they're
expecting that only eight or nine teams are going to be able to spend at the cap at that point and
there's going to be a lot of teams trying to hit the floor right at which here's Sergey here you
go here's a seven million dollar cap hit for the cost of a league minimum player might I also
mention Robida Island exists that's a thing it's definitely a thing like do do we think that Chris
Tanev's playing until he's 42 I'd like it if he was effective or Marchand or Gudis or any of these
guys there's quite a handful Bobrovsky conceivably could uh but I mean he's all the other guys we
just mentioned I don't think 40 in his last year I mean the way his birthday workouts but also like
the we uh this is another thing like when I was looking uh back at his career I was like oh
we should probably adjust the Bobrovsky being injury prone thing.
He's played 50 or more games in each of the last five seasons.
That's old,
man.
And the only reason it's not longer is potentially because of the COVID
shortened season.
I think he played 31 out of 56 games,
which pro rated is 45.
This guy,
he he's a workhorse.
The Leafs.
When was the last time the Leafs had a workhorse goalie?
Freddie Anderson.
It was early Freddie Anderson.
Early Freddie Anderson.
You're right.
That's important, right?
They haven't.
This is one of the other things I sort of laid out.
They haven't had a bona fide starter since at least 2018.
It's always been, well, we hope this works.
Yeah.
We hope that, like, we've had goalies who have been adequate as the starter.
Had good runs as starters.
Jack Campbell.
had good runs that started well even like stolers but like got hurt and you could look at that and
be like well he got beamed by sam bennett oh all right yeah fair but like well what about last
season that wasn't didn't do it yeah no that wasn't sam bennett joseph wool jack when he had
when he had bone chips on the knee that they had to remove in his first season here where he's out
for six weeks that wasn't sam bennett either yeah his first season leading the league in save
percentage he was Bobrovsky's backup playing under 30 games and Jesse when you look at at the
Bobrovsky deal like how does it how does it hit you do you did you care about the contract structure
does it make you feel better like what's the because I loved it off the top and now I love
it even more I'm good with it it's a high risk high reward kind of thing like if this goes bad
it's not great like if he's not the goaltender that he has been throughout his entire career and
last year was truly an outlier in terms of his career numbers it's the first season
he's had in his entire career that's under 900 save percentage that's great he's been extremely
consistent yeah his entire even those bad years in columbus where he got todd richards fired
i got it right here uh the philly year is the second year he's in 899 if you want to
then whatever but besides the 899 in his second year in philly he is that he is above 900 save
percentage in every single year of his career that's two years before the podcast started by
the way yeah he's he's been very consistent and i think what you're asking for is here when we get
to the playoffs we want somebody who's going to start every game and can steal us a couple games
because sometimes goaltending is the only thing that can win you a game in the playoffs yeah i
was just gonna i was just gonna jump in and say that outlier way back when that when adam said
before the podcast i started grade nine so oh my god that's not uh yeah that's a long time ago yeah
it's not an indicator of anything no no so but like this is this is the risk that chica's gotta
make here because i don't i don't realize i don't know if people realize how on the clock the leafs
are oh there's a reason that that four group we're talking about for so long there's 12 guys in your
starting four group six are new from last year from what they had at the end of the season we
can count six new guys that's 50 of your forward group change that's because they need wholesale
changes because they need to contend for the playoffs here this upcoming season so when you're
looking at your goaltender position you got to say wool installers and hilda b aren't going to
be the solution let's go out take a big swing and that guy is bobrovsky out of all of the guys who
are going to be available so i applaud him for taking the big swing here i don't know if it's
going to work or not but this is the direction you should be going because this is what you got
to do as a franchise because losing isn't something that the owner is going to accept
at this moment here the smart move two things it bring bring that up again uh his uh gsaa which i
believe is goals saved above average uh almost he's a positive in nearly every season in his
career last season he was minus 23.4 which is obviously abysmal but it's so bad that it's very
obviously an outlier he played a ton of games on a bad team yeah 52 games or 51 starts i should say
i gotta say though the reaction to the leafs getting bob and the reaction to what the oilers
have done in net is unjustifiable okay i don't i don't know if i've seen that it's unjust well
because most people are like bob i don't know and it's oh the oilers solidified their they
solidified their net freddie anderson played half the games bobrovsky didn't had a worse
save percentage regular season regular season he was great in the playoffs though okay great
you got to get through 84 freaking games which is his achilles heel he's he's old and busted
right there's achilles knee or achilles hip depending on his knee achilles hip achilles
elbow achilles head bones connected to the neck bone everything okay so you went out and you got
devin levi i like that bet i like that bet for them it's still a bet and then it's jari like
jari's gonna play games for them at this rate yeah of course he is like they're doing they're
rolling three goalies next year i think i still think the oilers would be wise to find like just
a cap hit graveyard for for uh jari go to chicago and be like what well somebody's got to somebody's
got to give up on the season first i think and you've got okay well well chicago's a few teams
that ought to well apparently conor bedard's injured so i don't know if you saw that oh my
god it's like he might have separated his shoulder again but um it is july but yeah still i i think
i think when you when it comes to the and we will talk freddie anderson a little bit more with the
oilers but when it comes to bobrovsky there's a two-year window here we're all agreed on that
right oh and all the contracts they signed with the exception of brandon duhaime and the trade
for nick paul and his contracts a third year all of them were two-year deals they're all designed
that if you have to sell in 2028 you'll be able to do the mother of all self actually you'd have
to sell this year probably because if they stink and matthews goes i'm not resigning this is the
year to trade him right yeah that's what i was saying about them being on the clock like these
are the risks you got to take when you're in win now mode you go out and get a guy who has a couple
of vesna trophies a couple stanley cups and you say i think he can still maintain that form and
we'll see if he can't at the age of 38 you know what do you think about the fact that so obviously
stephen lorenz that's a lot's been made about he was bobrovsky's shooting partner anthony stallers
uh they were you know obviously great teammates there's that picture of them floating around and
hey why not recreate the cup championship from a couple of years ago's gold that would be great
i want to know uh the value of that sort of comfort and i know that sounds really silly
but i think people are barking up the wrong tree oh comfort is with curtis macalini who was his
goalie uh partner in in philly for a long time or at least they were together i think it's columbus
sorry no it was columbus columbus they were together yeah he was philly for two years uh
during like his long stint there now he's the goalie coach in toronto he runs the whole thing
that's the guy I think he has a lot of trust with and they have a strong relationship behind the
scenes so I think if McElhinney believes in Bobrowski and is the guy he is going to be
working with I think that's where there's actual help here I don't know the shooting partner with
like that's a fun story and everything I think it is sure it's a thing but where the true guy who
is actually his coach and day in his day out reports to Jim Hiller on the goalie situation
because no head coach knows anything about goaltending.
They go to their goalie coach and they tell them this is what's happening.
The fact that McElhaney and Bobrovsky have a really strong relationship
gives me a lot of confidence in what the Leafs are doing.
Well, and McElhaney would be able to say, no, he doesn't have it.
Yeah, I think McElhaney is a large part of the reason he got the contract.
He's the one talking to Chyka and Hiller and saying,
yeah, I think Bobrovsky is going to work out here.
I also think McElhinney
did a great job
with the goalies
he has had
look at the success
like no names
that we never thought
would have NHL careers
Dennis Hildeby
who came off awful
like he was not good
a couple years ago
he was buh buh buh
brutal two years ago
and then all of a sudden
this year is one of the
NHL's leader in save
percentage of minimum
20 games
he was unplayable
I remember I was
driving home from a
book signing
and I was like
okay I gotta listen
to this game on the radio
it was against the
pre-good Sabres
which you always have
to specify
yeah no no no i'm not talking about last year's sabers i'm talking about when they stuck that's
the pg sabers dude it was like two nothing five minutes in i was like god damn it dennis yeah
please figure it out man and then he did curtis mcclain he's a good pull jess and i think i my
question to you guys would be you want if you're getting brobrovsky you're getting him for the
playoffs right like that's what you want him and yes uh which is why the oilers also get freddie
you probably the florida panthers probably played brobrovsky a little more than they should have
last year because i mean good for taras a little taras i've got a good contract too but i wonder
if um if they had known earlier that they were going to be that out of it with would they play
him as much what's the what are we turn what are we asking for in terms of games play here
are we asking for 50 is that ideal are we asking for 40 and then maybe we can get 25 30 out of uh
um stallers which is roughly what he gives you every year and then halavi or
actually i'm off get 10 getting hurt uh obviously yard sales all of it i'm gonna assume he stays
healthy which is what he's done for a long time now and if he stays healthy i would say at least
50 yeah jesse that's what he does that's what he's in terms of games play yeah do you think
he's gonna be a uh a games eater like he always has been i think if we think stallers is good for
35 like whatever yeah the rest of it's left I think I don't know what I can I hope he doesn't
get pulled 10 times because I think that's what he would need to do to hit that number I think
they go a little easier on him I don't know if Bobrovsky wants to them to go easy on him I think
he probably wants to hit 52 games again you know he wants to be in that age that number range
because that's where he's been the lessons uh post-covid season yeah dude 52 54 58 50 54
that's what he's gonna play yeah and then again it would have been 45 or it was on pace for 45
he played 50 in the 1920 season that season was cut short by 12 games like he would he would have
played close to 60 maybe even 60 probably in that 55 range and you know how i know that the two
seasons before three seasons before that he played 62 65 63 all this we gotta that thing about
Bobrovsky being made of glass, that's like
10 years old. No, I don't think anybody
who's been watching it. He's
37. It's just that he's 37.
It's a relevant question. He was
37 when he played 52 games. Yeah.
Okay. And put up terrible numbers
on a shitty team. Yeah. Okay.
Brandon Duhame's an interesting one
because apparently he's just
a beauty. People just love this guy.
I love the John Carlson clip. So the
John Carlson clip is what?
Carlson is walking
him like a dog with his hockey stick and duane is running around on all fours going
which hell yeah i love a weirdo but apparently he does he's a great skater and we'll drop him
he's another big guy who skates and yeah they got a bunch of guys who will go like
duane will the leafs had the leafs big tough guy a few years ago was ryan reeves who couldn't skate
and he wasn't in the lineup well exactly so you can put this guy in the lineup and actually play
him in some other roles too and it and it will work all of joshua bluger duane sissons uh paul
uh i'm not so sure about paul he'll probably go right they got a bunch of guys who will go
um okay so i if they have to so he's a bit of a glue guy too right he's a bit of a vibes guy
you needed that with lot and gone i think and also speed and can kill penalties uh blocks a ton
of shots um lays a bunch of hits you're you're you lost a bunch of shot blocks with benny i know
he's a defenseman but and you know what a lot of those shot blocks were because benny gave up the
puck uh listen i don't know i'm gonna say it i don't want to say it i know your wife is a big
simo benoit fan so i know she's gonna hate me for that but she probably won't hear this it's because
our son did i ever tell that story on the show i don't think you did we were out at a bar actually
was for uh your wife's birthday and but we were there disgustingly early we were there like 45
minutes early and i uh benoit and myers walk in and my wife has absolutely no chill so like i said
to her i go um that's uh that's simone benoit and uh philip myers she goes simone benoit
as loud as possible because for some reason her son just loves simone benoit he didn't hear us
his partner did and she oh french for french and he goes oh french and french and then
uh offered to take a picture oh that's nice yeah i like that took it with her he's a beauty yeah
yeah he's a beauty now i brandon duhaime max skating speed is in the 92nd percentile a bunch
of nhlers skating uh bursts 11 last year of 35 plus kilometers per hour that is in the 91st
percentile um of nhl like pretty good i'm supposed to look at that and hate that no it's good that's
great yeah and again it's a three-year deal steve so that's a big problem at 2.6 million
that's roughly two percent of the cap well what now wait what are they gonna wait now wait i will
i will give some sympathy there so i because i was thinking about this sort of last night and
this morning um a lot of people have not adjusted their expectations when it comes to cap hit
and i've like hardcore hockey fans are kind of split on what the leafs did like a lot of leaf
fans i think like it some people are like yeah a lot has to go right you know bob has to bounce
back paul has to bounce back no shit i understand all that i totally understand all that the cap
hits that were given out yesterday if you haven't adjusted or two days ago the cap hits that were
given out two days ago if you haven't adjusted expectations yet are psychotic to aim for 2.6
a couple years ago would be
completely insane. That would be David
Kompf. That would be the David Kompf
contract. Kompf was always an
overpay and he's getting more
and can probably do
less. Kompf's a center,
right? He's also
a pending, he's a free agent right now.
And a physical black hole. Right?
Well, there is that.
Sissons for four
and a quarter is wild
stuff. Roslevic for
four is wild stuff uh paul is actually very reasonable and like even bluger's getting what
two and a half something like that for what he does like if you haven't adjusted like you're
talking about percentage of the cap no one at the bar is talking about percentage of the cap
right um you're right you're absolutely correct but a lot of people are definitely gonna have
sticker shock about some of the numbers okay so so let's i want to talk about that because
this is how the agents look at it alan's talked about it on agent provocateur a bunch of times
uh colton sissons 4.25 or 4.5 whatever the heck it was 425 um okay 425 for two years um oh man
colton sissons that's a lot of money for colton sissons okay let me let me put it to you this
way it's four percent of your cap for your third line center i don't think he placed uh no but just
i don't know maybe on the position your third line center him and nick paul i here's the way
I looked at it on July 1st I didn't look at the term I didn't look at the cap hit I went I like
that player that's how I looked at it and what if I told you you got Colton Sissons and Teddy
Bluger for less than seven million a couple years ago I would have but this year punch myself in the
face this year I'm like yeah okay reasonable with with the money that was getting handed out yeah
totally reasonable movable deals not worried about it and I think that's that's the thing it's it's
not like like the other thing i want i want to point people to because we're just starting to
get a picture of what this front office wants to do because in front of the media they refuse to
tell us like jesse's been at all these press conferences and they're like yeah we're gonna
keep that in house like we're not gonna tell you what we want to do i think we know now we know
they want to skate they want to be big uh they don't want austin matthews or john devars to
take any d zone draws ever again and nor should they why is john devars skating 175 feet for a
scoring chance just get them there okay beyond that what are we looking at here we're looking at
a a team that very clearly wants to move the puck and a front office where hey if something doesn't
work you're gone and i like like they in previous years with the leafs it was like well okay this
player is clearly not working out but if we move them that would be bad asset management so better
to keep the player on the team and dubas was guilty of this better to keep the player on the
team because we don't want to lose bet like poor frank corrado let's bring up our buddy frank okay
frank was a waiver pickup from vancouver who should have played more i believe his waiver
pick he might have been a trade remember i don't know no no no he was he was but the leafs the
leafs maybe the leafs spent assets to get it doesn't matter but mike babcock's like that guy
that's the guy i'm gonna bully i hate this i hate this guy violently yeah even though i've never
played him i'm not gonna play him yeah and remember we had the whole freak frank free frank
karate movement the right thing to do would be like okay my coach isn't gonna play this guy
let's move him somewhere else or wave him right so at least he's gonna get some ice time rather
than just being on with the guys after practice right instead kyle dubas was like i'm gonna keep
them because that's bad asset management guys like i think that might have been lou well it could
have been but that but where do you think that ethos comes right right i'm talking about guys
like nick robertson i'm talking about guys people are mad about losing matthias michelli i don't
know why this is this is where i think like hey let's say bob doesn't work do you think that
they're just going to sit back and do nothing the one thing we have seen from this front office
being the most active team on july 1st is that they are aggressive and that part i think people
haven't adjusted to yet we are still stuck in the truly dubious not wanting to make a bad move being
afraid to where and brad true living not wanting to make a move at all if matias michelli doesn't
get at least seven points every 10 games pete deborah is going to strangle yeah 100 islanders
like it's gonna be fun it's gonna be fun i'm getting ready for him but watch it's gonna be
fun i think when if somebody doesn't work and by the way every year somebody doesn't work somebody
doesn't make it doesn't work do you think this guy these guys are just going to sit around and
let him hang on the roster absolutely not i don't think so either either so i want people to kind of
transition their minds to that a little bit you know what's also fun um guaranteed john chica
never had a july 1st like this in arizona oh yeah he had actual money to spend yeah hey uh
can i league mint four do you want four you said he wants four all right let's do four we got him
yeah yeah that's great he probably has never signed that many players in a single day i can't
imagine that he has unless they're you know ahl deals or whatever so that that to me is like okay
something doesn't work it doesn't work okay it doesn't work then we move on and brandon carlo
oh well we don't want to trade him because look what we gave up for or you can trade him for three
two third round picks draft well and feel better about it and just move on with your life that's
he's doing stuff he's doing stuff itchy thumbs yeah i like that so anyway that's what i wanted
to say on that uh anything else on the leafs guys that you guys want to hit go let's go uh i'm still
i i'm not totally sure they're done i they're certainly not but again we have a better idea
of the team they want to be i don't know i still uh i don't have a read it's like is joshua gonna
move is i i don't have a read i'm on my toes it's fun hey what if you went into camp and you didn't
have all the questions answered that's great that was also a thing it's been like 48 hours since
they made a trade and i'm losing my mind they were so up against the cap for so long that
everybody's position had to be decided by camp because they had no cap flexibility to do anything
and people like well they don't have any cap flexibility now i'm like yeah they do actually
We got to wait until the 11th hour for them to sign Zach Aston Reese
and have a dollar of cap space.
Yeah, or PTO him.
Or like they did with Stephen Lorenz.
They did that every year.
Every year.
Every year.
DJ Smith's salary is rumored, by the way,
to be close to a million dollars a year.
He's an assistant coach.
Assistant coaches don't make that kind of money.
But DJ Smith had a bidding war between Edmonton and Toronto.
Jim Hiller really wanted him.
Mike Babcock really wanted him.
And it sounds like Edmonton was just like, open the vault, get the coaches in here because we don't we don't have time to mess around.
And so DJ Smith, by the way, I just thought you guys should know, is the highest paid assistant coach in the NHL, reportedly.
Hey, good for him.
Good for him.
2015 Memorial Cup MVP with the Oshawa Generals.
Let's go, DJ.
I want to talk a little bit about the Senators, DJ's old team.
First off, what do you think of this deal?
All right.
So perhaps the biggest trade that the Ottawa Senators are looking to make is your Brady Kachuk jersey.
So from July 3rd today to the 9th, Ottawa team threads a Canadian Tire Center, which is in the arena.
You know, you got to drive half an hour to get there.
Of course.
You can trade in your officially licensed Fanatics Brady Kachuk stitched jersey.
Just the stitched ones, though, not the ironed on ones.
and and then you can save 40 unregularly priced merch aka new jersey now i told you earlier in
the day with william nylander that they just said we'll change all that it'll be free um what
senators fans are kind of pissed at this so i gotta give you the jersey i just bought and it
has to be fanatics and it has to be stitched and then you're gonna give me 40 off my next
brand new jersey that's basically the same as this one that's a good point like wasn't it adidas like
two years ago yeah these are all the fanatics jerseys are basically new within the last two
years right right and i'm basically identical to the adidas jerseys except for the logo on the back
yeah but only the fanatics ones will they do that sucks that chuck out the old jersey is funny yeah
i do enjoy it very much um trade in your fanatics brady jersey uh save 40 i wonder
were they not allowed to use the name kachuk i think that they were just no of course they're
allowed to use the name kachuk it's on the back of the jersey yeah i know uh but i think it's just
they didn't want to say it in the in the thing uh pretty clear in your fanatics brady jersey
save 40 percent by the way tradie your brady was right there she could have been oh the other thing
is honestly in a sense to the ottawa senators are those flames on the graphic yes the ottawa
senators did nothing july 1st they were they were busy before it the least you could do
is say guys we'll switch the jersey numbers for you you keep the jersey or if you want to sell
more jerseys we'll take the jersey back and we'll give you a higher percent or how about this we'll
just give you a new jersey open up your wallet i know the bats will fly out of it but this is
how many people do you really think this is going to be negative for and if you want a big pr win
that distracts from the fact that you did nothing july 1st and i'm going to get to a story that's
mind-blowing about the senators in a second uh why put this out this is really this is bad pr
they fumbled a bit of a of this is an easy one they fumbled a bit of an easy win how many all
you got to do is calculate how many brady kachuk jerseys were purchased in the last couple of years
with fanatics yeah how much is this going to cost us so it's not going to be that much just to make
sure i fully understand this they they get they have to they save 40 on switching the name and
number no so you give them your jersey uh-huh they take it you get 40 on your next purchase
and now you don't have a jersey no that's what it is your fanatics brady jersey save 40 gear up for
what's next but trade in yeah you give them your jersey and you get 40 off of the team shop
oh that stinks shit that's even worse than i thought that's why i was wondering where your
reaction was why is he not more mad about no i thought it was like you traded in and you got
like a coupon kind of oh that's so who's the new ann lauer ann lauer was supposed to come in and be
like this new reputable exciting owner and that is very reminiscent of the old regime eugene would
have had it at 25 that's so he wouldn't have had it at all yeah you're right that's so cheap
sense fans deserve better than that ew now i think they deserve better than that not just there
but claude geroux so steve steos came out after signing sam arison to that big contract you could
add eric comrie for 1.3 million i'm serious um he said that the club's free agency start or lack
thereof wasn't by accident uh according to steos the inactivity stemmed from and i'm reading from
the hockey news here claude geroux and his desire to speak to other teams so what steve steo said
and this is where i think you got to stop running your team like it's rinky dink
is there's a reason why i'm not active today obviously that spot is reserved for claude
i'm eagerly anticipating waiting to have a conversation with him so you're holding up
your entire team's offseason
for Claude Giroux.
Not 2012 through 2018 Claude Giroux.
26-27 Claude Giroux.
Now, he is a fairly...
I think he's a big part of the heart of the team.
You know?
Yeah.
But you send down Marilinen.
So that frees up another 1.1.
You're looking at like
$6 million in cap space.
they don't have a ton yeah so steve i'm not used to seeing this are you letting out are you letting
your third line center hold you captive you probably yes or no you probably shouldn't and
yes he had probably bad idea 49 points last year you know very very good contributor he's a good
player they should absolutely be trying let me give you a stat line in the playoffs okay it's
brady kachuk's four games zero goals that's pretty good oh never mind it's bad usually that'd be good
Why are we holding up our entire franchise for Claude Giroux?
And I know he's from Ottawa.
I know he's played four great seasons there.
Big part of the heart there.
But let's operate like an NHL team for a second.
If Claude Giroux wants to talk to other NHL teams,
then you need to start talking to other NHL players.
And go, sorry, Claude, the spot just might not be available.
Anthony Mantha.
And let's say the rumor was that he might go back to Philly.
Let's say he does in the next couple of days.
i know the leafs had interest in drew i guess he didn't have interest in them i get it he's
from ottawa whatever and now you're just screwed now what now you might have a young player who's
ready to go you might have a move in your back pocket i'm sorry if you don't want to be a senator
then goodbye right we've had plenty of time to chat chat about this with you if you want to
explore other options then other options you shall explore because there won't be a spot here that i
don't understand this i wonder about what he's going to be able to command because have you
like looked at what's like oh he's gonna make like five million bucks dude there's nothing left and
he's a center and he had 50 points last year with 49 and he was healthy i don't think he should be
a full-time center at this point but good contributor though 35 assists two years in a row
great oh man that's a valuable piece man there's a few teams that had like kind of surprise good
season i don't know the sends aren't really a surprise but they had sort of breakout years
that have spent a ton of goodwill the last few days sends i still think they've done okay in a
terrible situation but this this is bad if they don't retain this player um and the docs dude you
don't have a decor you need those you need one they stole one from the sense nick jensen oh great
oh sense fans are real broken up about it too yeah no they're like okay they also held a spot for him
he wanted to explore other options though oh yeah but no let's get back to this yeah sure sure i
think that's ridiculous i think that's insane it's this man if is a great contributor he is 38 years
old what do you mean you're holding up your entire off season for claude geroux what's that thing
girls say to each other when their boyfriend ain't shit um like if if he wanted to he would
yeah or whatever yeah um there's nothing wrong with him exercising his right to go and check
yeah but if drew wanted to he would and uh here we are july 3rd and he hasn't signed
you're you're risking a lot now
does this mean steve steos is the cowardly lion or does this mean he's actually got some brass
ones because like the brady kachuk deal and then parlaying that into ecklund like that's brass ones
yeah right you're they did now we can kind of see from what's been out there about like the
american olympians requesting trades like they did very well in terms of assets um they didn't
do very well in terms of stuff that can help them now so okay steve sayo said i'm gonna get the most
assets possible and then i'm gonna go to work and he contacts san jose gets heckling gets heckling
yeah right um maybe he's got brass ones and he's like you know what claude's gonna be back
yep he'll be back here there's no guarantee though jesse do you think that that's a good idea
i actually don't think this is too bad of an issue because they have one roster spot remaining
and it's either to jeru or somebody else that will be of very similar caliber they have five
million dollars in cap space right now they haven't missed out on anything by not doing this
like there are options for them i think who are the options still on the board anthony mantha
if they want they can go out and get them they could do patrick kane i'm just going down the
list of people who are available marcus johansson uh ellie tolvanen those are just some of the
point getters uh if you're sorting by point mojo's gone to sweden by the way in the league
tolvanen's a really good one but he's interesting um i i just think like they'll pivot to something
else maybe it's a couple guys with the five million dollars but it's just it's one spot
and they are not holding back any other signings by not doing this one and it's not because like
hey they have to do things on july 1st because it's not a team like the least where you needed
to sign six guys because you needed wholesale changes their team is pretty much set and this
is kind of just the last piece to fill and if they don't fill it there they'll do something else
you can always uh be active in trades might even be better i think the mistake they made was giving
urson money like i'm a deal i'm upset that they even gave levy maryline in the million dollars
to come back i think that's a waste of time uh and i think urson who had just the so if you sort
by like i think it was like minimum 12 games played in the nhl last season as a starter for
a goaltender the the final two are levy maryline and sam urson and they're like okay we're gonna
keep these guys and we're gonna bring one guy to the organization and keep the other one i think
those are your mistakes there so i don't like stale making those moves but they didn't need
to do anything in free agency so them not doing drew yet i think it's fine to me yeah out oh boy
it's real slim pickings dude like if if you don't get drew it's mantha like you said yeah that's
the list there hey like trying to but i don't like would perron come back no i just named guys
that were on the screen i don't know if they're if those are the fits in the lineup but is there
Value add and drew in there like you five million dollars to just go get a couple pieces.
That'll be quad Claude Giroux like in your lineup.
Henry James Van Reams.
Dyke line is a fun one line.
It would be a fun one, but I don't think that's going to work.
I think he's going to go to a market where there's not a lot of.
I mean, in Ottawa, you know, per capita, there's a lot of interest, right?
Like the media is actually more intense there than certain other markets.
You want to Callie Yarncroke?
hey now there's a sin yeah like even archer kaliev i i didn't realize he's not coming back
as a free agent all right well yeah well they didn't qualify yeah okay so we're starting to
come up on they probably better do this that's what i'm trying to say like i again i'm surprised
at your tepid reactions to this because to me it's insane this isn't the make or break of the
ottawa senators you know like i don't tending is right yeah yeah that's valid i don't know it's
one depth forward i just wouldn't let a third line center hold my july 1st plans hostage if
you were going to do it you get if you were going to get mantha get him 67 points last year breakout
season that's awesome i think told that it would be a good fit on that team i just don't think he
brings the offense that drew does no certainly not i mean drew is what the top two top three
guys still left in terms of full offense given uh marcus johansson is up there i'm really surprised
he went to sweden he was really good and hayden is shaking his head because he's a wild fan
um but i like marcus johansson a lot i was surprised he went to sweden but maybe you just
want to go home that's another team that spent a little bit of goodwill yeah we'll talk about that
my source for that is our very grumpy producer now i want to talk a little bit about um the san
jose sharks because they spent big yes and a lot of people first off i i just saw a video of uh
that seven foot one defender alexander carmano uh and he's at rookie camp and what struck me
about it is there they have it at sa i believe it's at sap um where they're having their rookie
camp and what struck me about it is not the rush that he goes on but the fact that the stands are
full oh dude sharks fans are insane dude it's a it's a great hockey market i'm like i'm so glad
i got the opportunity to see it in person yeah and the way things up and seeing a seven foot
one defender rush it down the ice it is amazing like he doesn't have a great shot and his skating
perhaps needs some work and he could be years away but this guy just being that physically large
could probably do it it as a seventh rounder that's not bad it looks like a kid's hockey
practice where they don't use full ice yeah it does you're right like i had the half ice yeah
the amount of strides that he needs to get down the ice yeah he and listen like i saw a lot of
people um there was this drill where you gotta uh carve your way around a hockey stick um on one
foot and he's not doing so great at it and everyone's like oh he sucks at hockey you didn't
draft him for his skating you drafted him because he's seven foot one 280 pounds as an 18 year old
hoping to harness your people don't people aren't understanding they're all focused on the seven
foot one part which would make him the tallest professional hockey player of all time 280 pounds
i believe would make him the heaviest player in nhl history like there's a guy like dustin bufflin
who would in the off season get up to 300 pounds um he's given up like a foot to harmanov and
her man plays at 280 that's why you picked him and it was with what a seventh seventh rounder
far yeah who cares cares and you had the best first round of maybe anyone with probably anyone
actually like definitely unreservedly um keaton verhoff too like stenberg verhoff and lynn insane
who gives a shit what you do with the rest of your picks definitely use one of them on the
seven foot one 280 pound guy yeah it's it's a pretty cool piece of video we can't obviously
play it because it's got nhl ice in it but you'll see it floating around on the internet today
depth pick like to give you an idea of how little teams care like some people are dunking on
carolina for trading a pick for john carlson and then they weren't able to sign him carolina who
i've uh gotten the impression they're pretty clever um was like okay we have a chance to get
john carlson or we have like a 10 chance at an nhl player and they just pitch that pick out the
door because who cares yep especially when john carlson's available playing at the level he's at
if carmen if harmanov doesn't pan out oh well if he does pan out you have one of the biggest
unicorns in nhl history guys if he plays 30 games ever in his whole career you've done well the
At the seventh round.
Announce it before the lineup card comes out.
I guarantee you a sellout.
Oh, yeah.
I'm going to barricade against.
Not just in San Jose.
Anywhere he plays, people are going to go to want to see this.
If the schedule wasn't as compressed as it was this season,
I was going to drive to North Bay.
To see him play?
Yeah.
Or like, where's his junior A team?
I don't know.
He played some junior A.
But you don't think about North Bay?
You didn't have to drive there.
You could just wait till North Bay comes to Oshawa.
You see?
Not as fun.
Got to be thinking smart here.
If I find out he's in the lineup for a Jens game, I will be there.
I don't care if there's a Leaf game then.
No, I'm joking.
But yeah, no, I'm absolutely.
Why wouldn't you?
He's a marvel.
Yeah, it's cool.
It's cool.
He's huge.
Did you notice no one tried to make general body contact with him?
Why the hell would you?
You're not doing anything.
You don't want to die.
Yeah.
Yeah, no, life preservation is generally good.
Now, I got to ask you, Jesse, dust is settled.
Jake Trouba contract.
Is it the disaster that people say it is?
Yeah, I thought the Sharks conversation, we spent a lot of time on this.
I didn't expect to go that hard on Hermano.
I thought you'd bring it up to talk about their moves.
And there's a quote circling from Mike Greer that I want to get to.
But I want to ask you first, Jake Trouba signing.
Is it awful and horrible?
They're all going to die.
I don't think Jake Truba is bad of a defenseman as I think the general population believes he is. I don't think a lot of people are too happy with what they perceive Jake Truba to be. But I believe the Sharks are at the point where they need NHLers who are proven to play for their hockey team.
Because coming into this offseason, they had Dimitri Orlov and Muka Madulin, who is a little baby child. So they really had Orlov and they need to go out and get experienced NHLers. I think Jacob Truba, because their sticker shock at 8.25 that, okay, maybe you think he's a tad overpaid, but for what they need, he can provide that.
He's going to be a steady defenseman back there who can be your minutes eater, whether he's playing with Darnell Nurse or not. I think those two guys that you've got, you have now just a stable defense core night in and night out. And he's going to be sometimes he'll provide the errors that we know he can when he's trying to break the puck out of his net.
but i feel like there's enough skill there that we've known jacob trooper to be that like these
couple years that they haven't signed to the four seasons aren't going to be a disaster and they're
taking a step here and i think he's a good defenseman to have back there they can afford
to overpay guys too exactly there's some but not that much not that yes yes that much no now here's
no here's what i want to say nobody wants a charlie in the box exactly well that's how people
people were just losing their minds over this by your three of this deal the salary cap is going
to be over 120 million like it it will yeah do you care that a middle a five or a six guy who's
big and physical and has a ton of experience and actually can score some goals too he scored some
goals in anaheim uh last year do you care that he's at six percent of the cap unless there is
another very unfortunate global event i think unlike 2016 which you can't plan for by the way
no unfortunate global event but but 2016 is the summer that everyone refers to as just every
contract was a disaster yeah it was it was terrible in order for uh that to happen with
what guys have signed for this summer another global event would have to happen um which
i don't know but i i think they're all gonna age fine i i don't think people realize like you have
to spend that money on someone and this was the guy that was available to spend that money on who
can fill that slot but then you went this but then you went guys and you went got nurse yeah three
million dollars overpaid a season how about this you went into june without a decor and now you
have one and everyone's pointing at your divisional rival and going they don't have a decor
not we're we're like a defenseman short you mean the ducks yeah yeah like the sharks now you look
at them and you're like oh okay i know what they're going with next year whether you agree
with it or not like i think nurse will be fine is he overpaid yeah oilers couldn't afford to pay him
what they were paying him sharks can most teams couldn't have paid uh couldn't afford to pay
true about what he's getting sharks can't yeah right um now they have a functional nhl team the
ducks don't they spent a lot of goodwill i think just yeah the the slot is available for that
defenseman and jacob truba was the guy who was up to go get that money and i don't blame mike
rear for doing that deal and i don't blame him for the darn old nurse deal either i think that
was a good deal um i don't mind darn old nurse there i think that that i mean listen is he two
or three million dollars overpaid probably this season sure i still think edmonton did all right
i do too honestly i think they did great yeah i don't i don't mind that at all but i think
you know obviously darnell wanted a change of scenery but the sharks thing those two guys back
there how how much fun do you think they're going to be to play oh my you're opposing offense and
you got to play those guys the locker room's going to be better like at some point you need
more experience than uh tyler toffoli is all our dad yeah right um and i think that's an
invaluable thing that they bring to that team the sharks could afford to spend this money or to spend
money that other teams couldn't if that makes sense and so when you so that now i want to get
to this mike greer quote because it happened from this morning i don't hate those moves i know
everybody's well they're not efficient in a vacuum but that ignores the entire context of the team
here's where it becomes bad okay like if the cap goes flat well not even that but like if you know
celebrini and misa and smith and all all these guys come up and you can't afford to sign them
that's when it's bad but you know it's crazy we're miles from all of that you can trade the other
guys that too we're miles from all of that yeah and like money will come off the books in the
meantime like it's not like the cap hits that everybody takes right now is just steady and
there won't be other room and other moves to make when the time comes you can make moves it's not
you're not just sitting here trying to make all of those contracts fit right now so i i think they
had the room and jacob truba will be so helpful on their penalty kill like he he's really good at
that still uh in the years that people don't think he's good he's he'll be good on the penalty kill
and donald nurse is a player who can play with speed and and speed is something that every nhl
team needs and i think it's gonna fit i think it's gonna fit well his problem is more decision
yes yeah there are other there there are other immense problems that nurse has but playing with
speed isn't one of them maybe don't put him in the positions edmonton had to put him in
because of where the cap was and the lack of other defensemen to take those roles
right change his role they can do that they got the money they got the space they can add and i
think that's that's the context people are missing here and listen if if oh man you got an expensive
couple of big scary guys back there by the way both of which uh over the past few seasons have
gone deep in the playoffs true but with the rangers and then there was the one year with
anaheim where they didn't make the playoffs and then he went to the second round this year
um nurse has been to the stanley cup final twice in a row and then the first round this year and
previously basically every year except for when the oilers were goofy bad conference final in
2022 like this is not these are guys with a ton of experience who are going to be calm under
pressure i like it and i just want to put up the numbers i was talking about the darn on
nurse's speed because looking on the nhl edge data and he's in the 96 percentile max skating
speed that's 96 percentile of 35 plus kilometer bursts 95th percentile on 32 to 35 kilometer
bursts and same thing with uh 29 to 32 this is a fast defense i'm glad you brought this up because
i imagine a lot of people listening to the show click the 15 or 30 backward button to be like i
I'm positive I didn't hear Jesse correctly,
but no, the guy can move.
Star on the fast skater.
Yeah, people, I just,
because all of the mistakes he makes
with the puck, with the Oilers,
they don't realize that he did provide
a whole bunch of other stuff.
And there's a reason that the potential was there
and they gave him that money.
He hasn't lived up to that money.
I'm not going to pretend like he has,
but a couple million dollars overpaid
on the Sharks is okay
because right now they have that cash space
and the three years I think he'll be there
will be great years for the sharks and great years for him good for him jumping from mcdavid
to celebrini that's not bad uh say okay man and like no offense but jumping from edmonton to san
jose like well in terms of where they're at i mean there's desperation in terms of leaving the house
with easily the worst part of winter is all the shit you gotta put on yeah i like just being able
to walk out of my house and now is one of the three months a year i'm able to do that um shang
ping uh from uh san jose hockey now uh you know he's a great reporter he's a man if you are
interested in the sharks go back and read his interview with hasso platner the owner of the
sharks unbelievable stuff last year and i can't believe it didn't get more play but when he talked
to mike greer he said that mike greer mentioned he said uh that that leaving edmonton could be a
bit of a fresh air moment for darnell nurse and of course he made it about the leafs he said you
You saw a little bit of that with Mitch Marner getting out of Toronto, just being able to breathe, play hockey and not have, you know, sometimes you kind of have the weight of the world on your shoulders to perform.
And if you lose, it's your fault. And if you win, no one's really saying anything, which is, by the way, not true about Toronto.
When they were successful, people were pumping their tires. But anyway, that's just the life of a big player in a big Canadian market.
And if you're marquee player there, that always adds extra pressure to it.
We think him coming here and getting out of that environment will only help his game.
it is valid that Darnell nurse had a contentious relationship with the media.
Like we had a few clips this past season where I was like,
Ooh,
I would hate to be on the other end of that microphone.
Yeah.
Um,
where he was like genuinely piss.
Can I just say,
and this is not a shot at Shang,
it's not a shot at San Jose either,
but,
um,
our media doesn't ask players difficult questions is not a flex at all.
right um i think shang does ask that right but there are not a ton of reporters at sharks games
well what like what's the subtext there yeah we're not going to bother our players with pesky media
coverage what it's the florida thing yeah the florida by the way the sharks would welcome
yeah that kind of media coverage everybody would it's good for business like yeah that's the goal
yeah so we operate like every other team in every other sports league like the nhl in that regard is
still extraordinarily minor league well i i i don't want to make it about that but what i do want to
say is that i think it's time we start calling this stuff out for what it is and it brings me
back to i can't believe brian getzlaff said this on mike but he was talking about toronto and he
was saying oh i couldn't i couldn't imagine anybody wanting to play there because of the
media the media i'm like let's just call it what it is you're soft you might be a hard ass on the
ice but off it you're soft that's soft pay attention to any other sport and and that and
we and it goes back to what we saw with so so john tavaris is one of the most famous athletes in
toronto cristiano ronaldo has never been here before his quote uh today about how great toronto
was mentioned that we have a nice ocean next to us uh so it shows you how little he knows about
the city because we don't and and that might have to be flown into Pearson and they had to have a
police escort on the highway that moved everybody to the side to get him downtown to keep him safe
there is no you said it John Tavares might not have been the top 20 most famous people
at BMO field last night Jesse Blake definitely ahead of him I think easily we gotta recalibrate
this and the idea that that the guys have got to run away from these markets just i i think we need
to call it what it is i think that's soft i don't think darnell nurse is soft i do think he had a
contentious relationship with edmonton or in the media sometimes i do think sometimes you need a
break from that but at a certain point can we just kill it with the canadian markets here it's not
about being soft it's about there is nowhere to hide in most nf in any nfl market never there's
very few places to hide in the nba there's very few places to hide in mlb hockey still has places
you can hide right so it's it's not about toronto being insane or edmonton being insane it's about
the media landscape in your market being minor league yeah that's not good enough yep the sharks
goal i can logically assume from them paying to fly a toronto-based podcast out there
is to be inundated with coverage that that should be the goal of every nhl team you're a big
frigging deal you can't be missed yeah it's profitable to cover you it's yes yes like
it's if all florida gets out of the past few years is a couple rings i would argue that's
not good enough right you okay you get the rings that's great is hockey booming where you are
right is hockey you can look at you can look at vegas hockey's booming hockey's booming yeah
nashville booming booming that's beyond the winning booming that is the goal yeah and like
california was a was a joke it was it was like a pipe dream of betman and his freaking little
pet projects this is stupid california is like a hockey factory right now players and fans that's
the goal that's the goal so you know when i think people take it in the wrong direction oh canada
can you should want this you should want it to be canada a hundred percent um okay jesse anything
to add on that one any thoughts on that like the game just isn't as big in all of these markets
like it's just not you go to these markets just they're it's the fourth largest team there you
know it's the fifth even third largest sport you know it's people there just aren't enough people
who care about the hockey in every single market so the players recognize that they have an
opportunity to play in some of these lesser markets and they often choose that over i guess
a more difficult life that has a higher upside like i believe that like if you win in a market
like toronto it's different than winning in a market like florida uh with the panthers like
there's differences that come with winning in different places and so often we see guys
choose the route where it's not the media storm because the nhl just isn't as large in different
places with the same kind of media contingency and the same uh depth of fan base your legacy is
the growth of the sport yeah right yep that's but some people don't see it that way they don't take
on that personal responsibility to be like i want to go to certain markets and grow the game there
they just want to go to the rink and play hockey yeah i want to go to the rink play hockey collect
my millions of dollars not be bothered by anyone i understand the appeal yeah i definitely
understand the appeal but you are you're taking the easy road out and the way that you're and
you're not doing anything special and the way that san jose is heading you're not going to be
able to hide there no celebrini is the next mcdavid yeah this isn't the effect of celebrini
on northern california will be the same as gretzky in los angeles it will it just will like they had
a great run in the last decade they didn't have a superstar like this did gretzky hide in los
angeles or was gretzky still gretzky he was still gretzky right in fact that's what we got to hope
for here if as hockey fans right right now i want to talk a little minnesota wild and producer hayden
is going to hate this uh bill garren we're going to we'll talk about the blake coleman trade in a
second the reason the blake coleman trade has to happen i think is because obviously you're losing
marcus johansson to sweden sure and bill garren general manager of the year pissed off matt
zuccarello who signed a 1 million dollar deal with bonuses at game 10 that gets him to 5 million but
that carries over to next year's gap if you wanted to and bill garren was frank very obvious or very
open no he was he was bell he's very very open with the media about this i respect this quote
it doesn't make him look good he said i don't blame matt's honestly i took way too much time
after the season ended to reach out to him and communicate with him and that's on me zuki probably
deserved better than that when we did connect a couple of weeks ago we had a great conversation
now zuccarello has said no hard feelings but we know he was pissed and he put in a great season
at 37 years old basically a point of game uh a great many has been a yes has been a big mentor
for karel kaprizov line mate this is a weird one i can't believe he left i can't believe it
got to this point Hayden Mike I think this might be a Hayden Mike situation but like okay on one
hand I appreciate his candor and and I appreciate how open he is about the mistake he made but
ultimately he made a it's okay that you admitted it that's nice but that's like bare minimum you
made it yeah I mean wild worse I I'm when I knew he was a UFA I was like oh yeah I'll resign him
whatever he wants you know I won't be too much he's getting older he's Kirill's best friend like
for non-Minnesota fans you won't really you might know but you might not know to the extent they are
inseparable Kirill and Matt Segrello were side by side practice staying late like Kirill would
work on his shot it's matt staying on the ice with him so i remember last year i was filling
in for maddie and you guys were talking about minnesota and i said yeah i don't trust bill
garen and then this year he made the quinn hughes trade and everyone's like oh yeah bill garen he's
great i'm starting to think that the quinn hughes fell into his lap he's hughes is also eligible
for an extension yeah i'm honestly starting to think that bill karen may have had a very lucky
like a good stroke of luck with quinn hughes because he was ready at the right time yeah and
to be a good general manager you need to be i just say like the other i just don't trust the
decisions he's been making we all thought the deadline was going to go a certain way and we
knew what their weaknesses were and we're like okay they're going to go out and address it and
they didn't uh michael mccarron was pretty good yeah and then mccarron's good i just like
still no center and again this will like if they do end up getting larkin which i know
it's been talked about that'll change of course yeah you're allowed to change your opinion yeah
things come up but like i just see the trade of oh they went out and they got blake coleman
another gritty winger yeah the only thing that gives me solace is the fact that dallas also
seems to be sputtering a bit yes figuring out what they're doing so the central is kind of
becoming jump ball a little bit yeah okay but bringing it back to this yeah this is an all-time
fumble this is a guy in 59 games who had 54 points million dollar salary five million dollars on the
cap who cares it's a it's i just feels like a morale killer so they go out and they get blake
coleman yesterday for ole mata i don't know blake coleman they got blake coleman sorry and ole
amount excuse me for jake middleton uh and three draft picks including the second rounder in 2029
which i don't think the wild care about no the calgary will also retain 50 on coleman so that
you know help him fit under he's 34 blake coleman's a monster playoff performer and you might
have forgotten uh because he played in calgary but he's a great playoff performer and was incredible
in tampa on that yanni gore blake coleman and who was it barclay goudreau line yes that was insane
oh but jesse i look at that and i go okay yeah blake coleman's great but he's not zuccarello he
doesn't have the the the fan history there and and for them for this to happen it just seems sloppy
doesn't it yeah like that's your job bill garen it's weird that he would admit it in that way i
haven't seen him actually say it so but like the words are there and that he was supposed to be
doing his job and reaching out to this guy who means a lot to his locker room and he didn't do
it i'm just like what what were you doing then bill um so i think it's you're you're missing out
on a good player by not being on top of stuff there it's a it's a misstep for sure um recently
we've talked about uh uh we got a a social media post of someone who had eight fetters fetch cough
jerseys yes we were asking about people who had jerseys for obscure players yeah the largest
olimata jersey collection is owned by olimata um he's he he played his first four seasons in
pittsburgh or five he played there for quite a while but now he's played pittsburgh chicago
la detroit utah hockey club and utah mammoth calgary and now he's ending up in minnesota
guys had quite the suitcase he's only 31 i think olimata has been in the nhl for 25 years
it does feel like that it does it'll be 32 and next season begins 804 games for olimata
two cups two championships and junior he's had he's had a really unsung career let me ask you
the the top three teams in the league last year at least in that division
colorado dallas minnesota they were pretty much the top three teams in the league who is
demonstrably better because this here's the thing there's plenty of time in the offseason you can
make trades whatever but all three of those teams like you have the jason robertson deal that didn't
happen you have the zach rinsky deal that didn't happen in dallas um uh natushkin is now in columbus
for uh colorado zuccarello is now in la for the wild i'm not saying they're going to step take a
step back because i think they're all great teams still who's better though well i mean colorado
had some all three of those teams have room to fall and still be pretty good oh yeah right not
a lot of challenge in that division either uh none of them are better none of them
the one thing you can say with the wild is they're going to begin the season with Quinn Hughes
which they didn't last year maybe a little bit of health too no Jonas Brodian and Erickson
kind of killed them in the play yeah you could definitely argue having a full season of Quinn
hughes and maybe getting a little healthier maybe it's the wild even though they don't have zuccarello
because yeah losing zuccarello sucks but all the guys that you just mentioned
yeah dallas could use a little bit of health too the way they ended the season but that's far from
a guarantee uh and colorado i like some of the moves they made but it's definitely a regular
season step back there's a difference between regular season step back and playoffs and do
we care if you're getting 120 points in the regular season like you probably don't it didn't
help them but it doesn't my question is not how they do against the rest of the league my question
is how they do against each other oh my god they all kind of look the same don't they
colorado still runs through mckinnon and mccarr um minnesota has the same strengths and flaws as
they did before um and dallas is gonna probably resign robertson now that now that bork's gone
maybe still haven't still haven't yeah right this is this is the thing and like it's it's actually
you know what i thought july 1st was going to be was just an insane uh we were just going to be
inundated with contract extensions all these guys who are eligible and we haven't really gotten any
of it montreal getting demidov and dobish done is like herculean compared to quinn hughes hasn't
been done um jason robertson hasn't been done or traded we don't have a resolution in the
dylan larkin thing and he could be going to either of those teams right a lot of question
marks in that division jesse you look at that any major changes to you did have they missed
an opportunity these teams because there was a lot of trading going on i think i think you still
have the top three teams in the western conference in those in that division with those three teams
and you look at colorado like their hand was forced to move off of some of the players like
the jack jury trade and the natushkin trade just because of the cap situation so there wasn't a lot
of finagling to do with their roster and so often we want teams to be splashy on july 1st but
the smartest move sometimes is just do nothing and not overpay for guys and i don't think any
of these three teams were in positions to overpay for anybody because they're up against the cap
limit because they have so many good players and they have to account for the raises that are
coming to these players the avalanche have to account for the mccarr deal that's coming up the
minnesota wild have to account for quinn hughes that's coming up dallas stars the jason robertson
situation is still playing out so they couldn't go out and just sign a bunch of debt forwards or
pieces to fill in the gaps in the lineup because they are already good teams and this is what good
teams do on july 1st the carolina hurricanes we're not sitting here saying oh they should
have done more it's because they have a really good roster right now they haven't done anything
they haven't done shit because there's not a lot of tinkering to do they try to get john carlson
that didn't work because they might lose nikishan like that's that's it exactly and that's an rfa
deal they're not willing to overpay for despite having the calf space and i think the teams that
are making the big moves on july 1st and getting in on the action are the teams in the middle
who need to go up or down it's the bottom feeders who need to fill out their rosters
or the teams who are looking to go from the bottom to the middle to the top or the middle teams like
the Leafs who are trying to get back in the top area so I don't blame either of these three teams
for sitting out the action on the first because I think it's the best thing to do for the long-term
competitiveness of themselves isn't this the first season Kaprizov's going from like nine and a half
to 17 17 million dollars that's your free position money right there that's crazy it's the money you
took on and hughes will sign this year i think yeah according to craig leopold craig leopold's
like hey here's a blank check for 42 billion dollars uh take it quinn hughes who cares about
the cap uh because he's ridiculous so i don't blame these gms for sitting out the action so
they do okay they do lose ucarello full season of brink full season of felino full season of
a karen um shabanov's just an ad um and then why is our goalie situation walstead and pickard i
think gustafson was injured oh or maybe he's not resigned you know yeah he's injured but he's there
that's interesting uh and full season the hughes so we have a bunch of guys it's just how puck
has it organized i don't think don't make it interesting no no i was i was like did they
trade him and i know it's not interesting i mean they could still do that why anything they could
they do have an ace to do that but like it's an 84 game season and they didn't have any of those
guys for 84 games and i think that's relevant okay fair enough um i want to move on very quickly
philadelphia um there's a there's a quote going around people don't really like and jesse if you
can is it i've just got a highlight talk it ever said uh no it's actually danny breyer this time
oh um and you know philadelphia has been interesting they they definitely were interested
in Darnell Nurse
and Darnell Nurse
was interested in them
but then Zach Rynski's
name is out there
and they're like
well hold on Darnell
and then Darnell
opened up his trade thing
and he ended up
in San Jose
there were rumors
that they would be
interested in
they're looking at
a big defenseman
there's also chats
that they're going to
trade Rasmus Ristolainen
to the Ottawa Senators
that's out there
still not
anywhere close
but those are the
conversations they've had
and notably
they're working on
an extension for
Jamie Drysdale
but they're another team that didn't get a whole heck of a lot done and the Washington Capitals
did and you got to remember that the Flyers went to the playoffs last year nobody was expecting it
they went on a run Washington didn't I definitely would have before last season swapped them of
course and I think this season will swap them especially with Ovechkin being back that I mean
the Caps have really valued they've they're better legitimate ads yeah better uh Danny
Gabriel's press conference, I think, annoyed a lot of people.
And this is the clip that I want you to watch.
I don't even want to give you a setup for this.
I just want you to hear him say it.
There's a chance and a good chance that we take a little bit of a step back this year.
We're ready for that.
But I'm excited where this young group of guys are going.
You can't say that.
What are you selling?
What are you talking about?
these guys these guys don't practice a like garen and briere and leopold talk it talk it and
friggin say the stuff that you're gonna say out loud before you say it and ideally in front of a
friend or someone whose opinion you value so they could be like oh let's workshop that a bit we
might take a step back you're right yeah what are you selling what are you selling the hell is that
they went to the second round they lost to the stanley cup champions and the vibes are
rosby and the penguins the one thing about it being july is that every team has a chance yes
august is the time where every single fan base and team should be convincing themselves you know what
this might be our cup here because no game has been played and your roster is just there and
They're just names on a board.
This is a ridiculous thing to say on July 2nd.
Now, okay, here's the theory.
Heading into last year, no one expected anything of them,
and then they made the playoffs.
And so he's like, all right, so part of the equation here
is we got to keep the expectations nice and low.
Yeah, but what kind of message is that to your players?
It's terrible.
Hey, guys, I put together and put on the ice.
It's literally his fault.
I'm not going to be as good as the last year's team,
but go out there and do your thing and we're excited about it don't forget he's like well
you know but i'm still i'm we're probably gonna take a step back and i'm excited it were i thought
we were done the rebuilding stuff in philly like what the hell you guys look so good second half
of last season and then you go to the second round and all of a sudden you're still talking
fucking we're taking a step back what are you doing you know what's funny is i think he's wrong
a hundred percent i don't it's not even that he said it i don't he's wrong so dan vladar was
crazy last year so the one thing you might have to worry about is like is he that good this is
he that good yeah their backup goaltending was non-optional it was sam arison arison auto was
backup goaltending now arison was terrible and any of the other guys who they had play a few
games were terrible yep it's joseph wall yep our our reservations about joseph wall or if he's
playing he's good we know that yeah how many games he's gonna play for you but he's really good
there's there might be stretches next year where if ladar takes a step back
wool is your starter for like a month i think they're betting on that yeah man um and you're
you're gonna be you can't play wool too much he gets tired and injured yeah that's fine like it's
as long as you don't have a backup who's perpetually getting blown up for
four,
five,
six goals against per game.
I know it's a good way to dump on your organization.
I just in the middle of the summer before like months away from games.
Like what are you doing?
Bad quote.
Why am I being like,
no,
Danny,
the flyers are good.
Well,
and Matt,
Matt,
if he shows up to camp in shape,
could be just Matt Bay.
Mitch cough.
That's that's like such an easy bet.
is michkov being better than he was it reminds me of the sales pitch they gave everybody when
they traded now 40 goals score cutter goche and and again like we just had this conversation with
the wild and now we can do it with the flyers having a player who you ended the season with
but didn't begin it with at the beginning of the season is so valuable dude you're gonna get a full
year out of porter martone yeah oh man he was great porter martone was crazy for you and you
had him for like a week in the regular season he's great what are you doing shut up but more
than more more to that what you're essentially saying your fans is well first off you're saying
your players if you take a step back it's okay yeah never do you're lowering the standard and
then when you say to your fans hey guys hey wasn't this your fun next year won't be uh yes there's no
reason to say that like i don't think the rangers are going to be good uh i think the penguins
actually could be primed to take a step back
because a lot of things went right for them.
A lot of projects worked out.
Parker Witherspoon, Ryan Shea, Anthony Mantha.
You could easily make the playoffs.
Penguins could make the playoffs.
Yeah, Flyers could easily make the playoffs.
No, no, no, I meant the Flyers.
Blue Jackets, who knows?
They're not going to be better, I don't think.
They might be the same, but that might be enough.
And I just, the Flyers are probably
the third best team in that division.
Isn't that where they finished?
Yeah.
All right, well, there you go.
so why would you it's not just as an unforced error they didn't do enough guys they didn't
so this is this is funny because you got bill garen going well you know i messed up there
and like the wild yeah they lost which i respect but also like bill come on that's that's an easy
one what you screwed up on was easy make a phone call this is danny briere i feel like he has he's
apologizing for a mistake he hasn't made they're gonna be fine what are you talking about stop it
and also like okay there's no winning situation here i think they're going to be fine and if
they're not fine that's also his fault yeah why say that here's what i would say if i were him uh
we didn't like the prices out there uh-huh and uh there were a couple of things that haven't
happened yet but expect us to be active we believe in our group we got a young a lot of young talented
guys that we think are going to take a step this year and we believe we can at least get back to
right where we were done we're counting on internal candidates to take a step forward
daniel daniel i'm really excited about martone i'm so glad you brought him up they did lose
emil andre though and that's huge uh jamie ben has re-signed with the dallas stars as of the
start of the show uh 850 000 thought that would be interesting we kind of knew he'd be back
gotta have bonuses right yeah i think so probably even so like hey man you're jamie
been at this point in your career maybe no bonuses he's he's taken a jog back uh i wanted to know
your reaction jesse and steve to shea weber's 14-year contract officially expiring two days ago
wow i hadn't even realized that i hadn't either it was oh and we should tack that on and who was
the guy that that tweeted it we should tack that on to our flyer segment because the last contract
shea weber ever signed was with the philadelphia flyers that's true because it was matched it was
an offer sheet um where he makes so much money for so long his last nhl game is 2021 in the finals
half a decade ago that's yeah g baby had to had to put an end to that those deals that were 10
years plus 14 years is wild all uh i've said it before i'll say it again dead wrong on his trade
to montreal yeah no question good trade uh i don't hate the logic like suban was a norris
trophy winning younger more exciting right-handed defenseman and uh weber surprisingly had more
longevity yep um he was unreal hall of fame career in the hall of fame before his contract expired
yager is still not in um which i think is just completely silly and ridiculous but that is uh
what a herculean just albatross of a contract that somehow he lived up to he did he lived up
to every part of it i think wild that he never got a cup i believe this is also the last year
that the flyers had to make a payment to ilia brisgalov oh my god because they bought out his
nine-year deal it doubles the length you got to pay it out wasn't it a year in yeah yeah so no
it's two years uh two years in so the seven remaining years they bought out which turns
into a 14-year buyout payment and it was paid on july 1st each year uh with no cap hit to the
flyers but they just had to pay it out right it was no compliance about 2013 it was one of those
so they had to pay him 1.6 million dollars up until this season so this was the last season
that's cool congrats to brisgalov and the flyers organization who doesn't have to pay that money
anymore meanwhile bobby bonilla is still getting paid uh every july 1st good for him um and lastly
and you guys will be well actually a couple of things uh a couple of things barrett hayton
offer sheet just very quickly uh is very funny steve worrier tweeted this out and i thought this
was worth bringing up um obviously with barrett hayton the offer sheet was 4.775 million dollars
new jersey had a week to uh to match it they now have five days if they do match it they cannot
trade him and he will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this if they don't match it
it's a second round pick and compensation until july uh january 1st oh it's january 1st i thought
it was july oh they can trade him uh at the trade deadline next year okay all right i thought it was
july 1st no the i'm pretty sure the trade restriction only lasts until january 1st no no
no i i think what it is because this happened with yosperi kakuniemi i think it's a full year
you can't trade them they can't sign them to an extension oh is it the extension january 1st so
that's utah's way out of this is if they were able to sign him they they have a week to do like a
wink wink nudge nudge be like okay we're gonna match this and also here's the dollar amount
we're gonna give you in january right kind of what carolina did with cockney me okay yeah because i
then yeah it was the extension sorry my mistake um yeah because there there's not a way like he
doesn't just go to ufa like they can sign him they can sign him yeah but he has all the leverage and
they can't move him uh but steve worrier tweeted this out uh and he said uh devil sorry surely a
coincidence the offer sheet from the devils would cost more than a second round pick if it was just
a little bit higher it's 4.775 million dollars how much higher would it need to be for that
compensation to be higher and it's
$666 which
I love
Sonny Mehta being a funny guy over there
I love that and lastly
you know Wunderkeens
we've talked about Wunderkeens in the NHL before
where did these young guys get these great jobs
you guys will be you'll be blown
away to know that the New York Post
broke this morning James Dolan is stepping away
from the Rangers and handing
control of the team to his son Quinton
oh Quinton
quentin dolan that's right oh qd so molly walker broke that this morning uh great reporter for the
post and i just thought you know man it's his business acumen absolute wunderkind i mean he's
crazy absolutely great how did he get that job uh how did you get it uh it's worked hard if he's
just james dolan but younger and with more energy we're in for a wild ride yeah it could be you know
what you're right this could be fun yeah uh this could be fun so we'll see how that works how old
this quentin uh let me know because i know okay don't start googling what's what's i'm gonna say
28 he's gonna be like the guy remember the remember the guy who owned the coyotes at the
end and he put his son in charge of like social media and they were throwing out brain rot shit
and then they moved the coyotes a month later yes um yeah it was like 28 29 years old i'm gonna say
he was born march 11th 1988 he is one day younger than i am he's 32 years old son of a gun
quentin dolan 32 years old is officially president and ceo and alternate governor
of the new york rangers it's an impressive he accomplished at such a young age alternate
governor that means he's going to be the representative at all those board meetings
so he'll be the one reporting to his dad he's gonna go sit with the other alternate governors
at the betman meetings gary gary unless james just goes himself gary you might everyone else
leave the room everyone else leave the room i'm talking directly to gary good luck stream it
i'll pay money i'll give you money oh stream it oh you have to gary i don't ask you for a lot gary
stream it i could see james still go into those things and actually being the no that's not nearly
the board because they're one of the franchises that actually has a lot of pull with betman they're
in his little executive club so i don't know if he's going to be sending little quentin to that
but this is a child in terms of business terms running one of the sports premieres franchises
how many on top of that many rangers are older quentin dolan was senior vp of player performance
and science leader for both the rangers and nicks and he's a scientist yeah and he will
maintain those positions so science leader and ceo i'll read it again quentin dolan currently
this is this is the job uh his his father uh bestowed upon him in the organization he is the
vp of player performance and science leader for the rangers and nicks and now as president yeah
and nicks wow and now as president and ceo of the rangers he will maintain those two positions
within the organization well jesse he just won a championship in the nba he earned this promotion
oh man quentin dolan uh joined msg sports in 2022 after he earned a bachelor's degree in sports and
event management from new york university well i wonder man's internship you know what but we're
all born with the same odds i think that's important we're all born with the same opportunity
this is crazy that is it crazy or is it completely expected from this organization no because
billionaires do crazy things because they're crazy people from a content creation stand it could be
great i'll tell you what i was disappointed with at the knicks parade dolan and james dolan and
zoran mamdani hate each other or rather james dolan hates zoran mamdani and zoran mamdani
probably doesn't think much zoran mamdani just sort of lives his life and runs the city yeah um
but it was just what dolan did to him was just like passive aggressive and snide because he's
old and doesn't have it anymore he's put all his energy into his dad rock band yeah and he just
doesn't have it this 32 year old with a little bit of blood in his veins we need you unhinged king
be super weird at everything we need it for the funsies we need it chris jury spoke on this
he said quinton quinton and i have worked together for several years and i believe him taking on this
role will only make the Rangers organization stronger the front office and coaching staff
will be working in unison with Quinton in all key areas of our team in an effort to put this
franchise in the best position possible to compete for a Stanley Cup damn that's crazy Jesse and
breaking news Chris Drury has just traded Igor Shostakhin for 21 seventh round picks I think
chris jury knows the last name that is on his checks oh yeah you think no i'm joking it's like
when you work at a corporation named after a guy and there's pictures of the guy everywhere and
they do religious ceremonies too i'm sorry i'm not a rangers fan so this rules rangers fans i'm
so sorry but for me this is so good he might be a rangers fan which should be different because
apparently his dad just only cares about the knicks anyway oh yeah james is just like that's
part of my portfolio one thing that happened was when uh jimmy dolan started building the sphere
in vegas everybody in msg these are reports that came out of it was really excited about it because
it took him away from the knicks and the rangers and he was distracted for a couple years building
the sphere so they like when he has these side projects because he's not being involved with
the teams which is good for the team like leaving a kid james we need another sphere yeah we know
it'd be better than one sphere two so people were hoping in texas you would go do more we actually
found a place further away than vegas can you build it there um uh uh it's like leaving a kid
at a birthday party but it's your billionaire boss yeah that's so funny yeah uh just last note
from quinton he said i'm looking forward to immediately getting to work with jury mike
sullivan and the entire staff i bet and i know when the ceo of the company is like i'm gonna
start working with the lowest level employees that always goes well them meddling in the day-to-day
operations of everybody from the staff to the coach to the general manager always ends in success
i wholeheartedly agree i am also looking forward to this this is gonna be great this bang oh my
Thank you for bringing that up.
I appreciate it.
Oh, man.
Sometimes you're like, what are we going to talk about next season?
Oh, Nolan.
He's my new favorite person in hockey.
Thank you so much.
There needs to be just a Quentin Dolan-like segment that just keeps going.
I'm sure.
What did Quentin Dolan do to that?
Listen, he could be like Jeannie Buss.
People made fun of Jeannie Buss.
Now, if you guys don't know the Buss family, they owned the Lakers for 30 years, 40 years, or whatever it was.
OK, so Jerry Buss buys the Lakers by trading buildings that he owned in Chicago for the Lakers.
And it was like one hundred million dollars in the 70s, which is John C. Riley, right?
Yes. Yeah. Good. So he buys them.
And he's trying to get his sons to take control of the team.
Turns out his daughter is the smart one.
And him being from a different time was like, what do you mean, women?
And eventually Jeannie was like, no, I'm actually brilliant, though.
and she took over the team
and ran it brilliantly
and they just sold it
for $10 billion,
which is a lot more
than the $100 million
they paid for, right?
Just a bit.
We got to be open
to the fact that Quinton
could be the genie bus
in this situation.
I think it's going to go
in one of two ways.
It'll be a disaster
or the greatest thing
that's ever happened
in New York sports.
I think you need to put
some respect on NBA champion
Quinton Dolan's name.
You're right.
You're right.
Larry O'Brien trophy winning Quentin Dolan.
That's right.
That's right.
Anyway, we'll leave it there.
We will be back Tuesday next week.
And there is a VIP episode fresh for you today, too.
So you've got double content going into the weekend.
Love you all.
Thank you all for watching and listening.
Anything else to add?
I love you.
Thank you.
I think the Rangers finish 32nd next year or they win the Stanley Cup.
There's no embarrassment.
If they win the cup, we're getting dunked on.
I'm OK with it.
We're getting Quentin Dolan shirts.
