Discover Coffee Plus on Nespresso.com. all right he's back yeah yeah and drew's back too hi drew he's uh they're both tired i think just a bit now stand up show do a little twirl show us show us what you're wearing son let's go Yeah, that's a Matt Sundin Jurgarden.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Name at the bottom of the numbers. Yes. Cut or uncut? I like it. I think it's just because the sponsor goes above the numbers. That's usually why they do that. Am I wearing a sponsor? No, you don't.
Starting point is 00:01:40 So they sell them without the sponsor, which is kind of neat. Yeah, they sell old ones. So this was a Sundin one. They sold Marcus Kruger, who I assume has to be on the team right now. Gabriel Landeskog, which Drew chickened out. You were going to get one of those jerseys. man they are they're really nice but uh what was funny is i apparently is that is that team still in the shl uh so i think they've been relegated because both stock stockholm teams are not in the
Starting point is 00:02:07 shl right your garden and aik okay it was a big deal on the broadcast my chair just shrunk it was a big deal in the broadcast that no team in stockholm is in the shl yeah and they they all just suck but like we walk by like a bar like people were uh it was packed watching an shl game definitely wasn't an nhl game because there weren't neon it was like noon here yeah when we walked by and like people in tuxedos so very odd steve brought some candy for us yeah we're gonna start with yop yop j-a-p-p it's the swedish mars bar oh see if it tastes any different it looks like i don't know if you can see this on camera uh but you can see that sort of looks like the mars bar font you're holding it upside down oh way to go stupid there you go there you go see
Starting point is 00:02:53 yeah yeah all right let's give it a shot okay is it gonna these halloween candies there like do they do that they do that right i just what halloween i thought they had some halloween stuff i don't know if that's more of a nightclub thing i don't know if kids are going door to door it is i'm trying to figure out the difference between it and a mars bar it's less chewy less chew definitely it's accurate the chocolate is also slightly different yes yeah better like the chocolate coating yeah better it is better it's not a mars thing it's an american thing yeah no offense it's got to be sickly sweet if it's american right whereas like european it's like well there's a little nuance to this chocolate you can taste like you know how
Starting point is 00:03:33 chocolate tastes like chocolate instead of the american ones taste like sugar yeah this one tastes like the chocolate cocoa 100 what i'm trying to say you know what i wish i could have brought back with me is the beer is it Swedish beer the garlic beer oh no not that I didn't have the garlic beer you didn't have it no no David Alter did because it's very on brand for him to be like I'm gonna try that fucking weird thing um but yeah it's a they had beer with garlic in it why apparently a lot of the food is is garlic garlic and onions and there are no vampires in Sweden wow really they would all get clapped real quick real quick I like that yes um so uh you guys you guys are a little tired but the i mean the the lfr was pretty spectacular
Starting point is 00:04:18 especially the second one that was so cool it's one of my favorite videos i've ever shot yeah ever did people just know where to find you after the game or how did that all come together well so we did the meetup on friday at the first game against the red wings and um uh like first of all the amount of people who showed up was mind-blowing i thought we were gonna get in trouble like from the league there was a guy like there's all these happy faces like in sort of a semi-circle around me and there was one guy like luring at the back like like just sort of mean mugging us through the crowd and drew said he saw him texting i'm like ah was it brendan shanahan it was not although i did see him oh you did yeah did you guys have lunch we did not
Starting point is 00:05:00 did he say hi no oh no well i'm i'm not there to sniff his jock i'm there to do my job normally he says hi to everybody though he's pretty like he's gentlemanly i don't i don't think he even saw me oh to be honest did he dm you after and did you post it online yeah i'm gonna post the screenshots oh my god i that started to break right before we got on the plane i'm like what the fuck is this the tim peel mark specter thing yes wow um yeah i'm sure we'll get to that they're both in their 50s yeah so um uh where were we uh oh yeah so someone was like mean mugging through the crowd or whatever but um we didn't really tell anyone we were shooting the LFR after and I was like kind of nervous about it to be honest because like I don't usually shoot in front of a
Starting point is 00:05:47 live audience and I didn't know what I was going to say and I didn't know how loud I could be like people were telling me like I don't know people in Sweden don't usually like when you just scream in the street yeah you said there are a weirdly quiet people not weirdly but you didn't expect it to be as quiet i felt rude for talking on the subway wow like really yeah it was it was extremely uh extremely just quiet and organized and just cordial and polite um but then then that video goes up so when we did the second meetup on the sunday it was even bigger which i would have again never anticipated like i figure you know people would have gone to both games said high the first one but the the leafs wild game i don't know how it came across in the broadcast if
Starting point is 00:06:32 any of you were actually able to get a hold of it um i don't know how we did yeah well yeah um i uh uh it was extremely well traveled uh very boisterous and people were asking right away like are you gonna do that again and so we said ah screw it i'm not afraid of the crowd anymore yes um and we did it after the game and there was i don't know how many people drew like 75 100 yeah over over 100 i don't know if you want to pull this up you can see drew panic panning the uh crowd there and there's just so many people like i can't i cannot believe that that is in stockholm sweden famous canadian man outside the arenas talking about hockey like like look at all that look at all that like i i really can't believe it um we met people from
Starting point is 00:07:21 over 20 countries um just everyone was so nice like people were one guy handed me his scarf like he just handed me as your garden scarf someone gave me a team hungary jersey um a bunch of people from every nation in the united kingdom uh france we met uh moises melina who's the is a play-by-play for uh hockey in spain um we met i i forget zabby i believe is the color commentator for hockey in hungary um there was another gentleman i did a podcast with who does the play-by-play for the nhl in germany and switzerland wow um someone came from australia a ton of uh my wasn't the nhl just in australia uh they liked it so much they wanted more yeah they wanted more there was a game closer no there were there were a bunch of people where i was like
Starting point is 00:08:17 i don't think they're i don't think they sound swedish and they're like oh yeah we're visiting from finland uh we took uh the ferry over and i went you can take a boat i didn't know that but then i look at a map and i went actually that makes a lot of sense but yeah like so people came from here there and everywhere uh all over the europe and all over the europe all over europe and um again i know it flopped in canada i i know it did um but that event live in person i don't i irreplaceable like to be honest i don't think it did flop in canada i think that well the only story i was able to read is no one was able to watch no that's the rights holders flopped it in canada i think the fans thoroughly enjoyed it oh yeah oh no no no the the like
Starting point is 00:09:02 listen i'm i'm not in the habit of speaking ill of my former employer but like they did a terrible job at this right they did well i think both of them uh missed the missed the boat whatever the whatever the rule is jesse did a whole show on it but i think the fins didn't i i'm particularly laying the blame on one rights holder because the other one isn't the main rights holder and is just has to accept whatever the other one gives them and picked up three of the four games and they did their best with the rules they had right so i'm laying the blame on one particular people over too just yeah and i think they cared about it a little more but unfortunately it could only be broadcast to each of the fans of the teams and let me only people in ottawa could see the
Starting point is 00:09:39 ottawa games and only toronto fans could see the toronto games which is a shame i think it's important that we're clear on something uh this is not anybody who's on the ground none of the on air none of the production none of those people every i'll say this till i'm blue in the face everyone i worked with at sports net um fantastic there you go fantastic we'll leave it at that now um it's time for the bet mgm big story two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Together, we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. Remitley knows if you live a long-distance lifestyle, you probably developed a few unexpected strengths like instantly converting time zones so when a text says let's talk after dinner in mumbai you know they really mean during breakfast in toronto or becoming the unofficial family tech support explaining why tia rosa in mexico city can't hear you when she's the one on mute can you hear me download the remitly app today and keep your long distance game strong remitly trusted by millions to send billions worldwide john klingberg's future
Starting point is 00:11:02 could be decided will be decided probably later this week according to chris johnson on the leaf report with uh james myrtle and jonas siegel what the clingberg situation is tough he tried to play through this injury it's not to say that he won't continue to obviously the results haven't been good he can't move as well on the ice as he once did when he had his best seasons apparently his issues were made worse by having a couple long flights duh yeah uh he gave an emotional scrum actually in stockholm about how badly he wants to play again and get to a spot where he can do that uh i don't know if he's going to be able to to me that's the big question and of course cj did add it might free up some cap space for the leafs to look at other things yes so what did you hear did
Starting point is 00:11:45 you hear anything you were there uh yes all that i ever heard uh with regard to john klingberg is he wants to play um and i know the leafs might get some benefit from him going on ltir um you know i know it might free them up uh to do some other things but i i think we need to do away with the conspiracy theories here and i know i'm going to sound like a bias leaf fan saying that clingberg looked terrible against the ottawa senators came out of the lineup uh goes back into the lineup i I think he had two games off, and then he goes back into the lineup against the Vancouver Canucks. We were there for that game.
Starting point is 00:12:25 He looked good. He looked good. Yeah, he actually did. I think he had an assist. He didn't really have any, like, bungles behind the net, no giveaways. He was moving well. Then they go to Sweden. Sheldon Keefe gets in front of it, and he goes, right away, he goes,
Starting point is 00:12:40 well, that long flight didn't do him any favors. And he didn't play either game. Like, some coaches are hard asses. I don't think Sheldon Keefe is a is such a monster that he'd be like Klingberg you're sitting back-to-back games for Simone Benoit that's how bad you are I'm taking you out of the lineup skill-wise I think Simone Benoit is more useful than you yes and like I I don't know this for sure but if you notice the photos of um the Swedish players the Leafs had uh they went to the boya uh movie premiere and it was all of the leaf swedish players except for klingberg and
Starting point is 00:13:23 john tavaris was in his place lagson was there lilligren who's hurt was there um nylander was there and uh who am i missing yarn croak i was surprised lilligren made the trip too well i mean maybe he's got like a more manageable injury and also he knows he's going to be out long term klingberg as far as i know all of his efforts in sweden were geared towards him playing in sweden in sweden okay well and for the rest of the season here's the other thing you have to consider with him going on ltir and him agreeing to it you know people have been talking about robita island stefan robita was 39 years old on a contract that was far too long and the leafs basically said listen you're done like just come be a scout yeah ride off into the sunset make your nhl salary
Starting point is 00:14:13 and we'll help you make your transition into your post-playing career john klingberg is 31 2 yeah 31 he's not old he had hip surgery in 2014 and it sounds like he's kind of been on borrowed time ever since and he's put up some magical numbers um uh despite all that he's on a second straight one-year deal like if he can't play if he can't go there's a good chance this is his final NHL contract and like he's not Roby Daw's age he's like seven eight years younger than he was uh when that happened to him so this isn't this isn't his logical next step this isn't his play one final season and then end up working for the team like jason spezza did this is like jake muzzin is yeah jake muzzin is doing that because he was faced with the harsh reality
Starting point is 00:15:08 look if you play any longer it will greatly endanger your health you can't go so let's have you around the team still they enjoy your company let's teach you the ins and outs like what will help mentor you into your post-playing career and then once your contract is done you go into your post-playing career John Klingberg's not ready to be done playing he might decide by the end of the season like he might come to grips with that and maybe that's why he was so emotional in Stockholm um because he was asked a lot of questions like he was one of the most popular guys in the dressing room um you know he uh he's emotional because he's he hasn't made peace with that he's not ready to let go of his playing days um the Leafs gave him I I know a lot of people
Starting point is 00:15:56 didn't like the contract 4.15 million dollars but they gave him that because uh I mean he was worth at least that in like relatively recent memory I'm sure if the Leafs had their way he'd be playing um he'd be healthy well they wanted a redemption story that's why they signed him yes yeah and it wasn't a terrible bet at the time but um his health is bad enough that might be over nick cabrillo's was talking about this with uh kipper and born and he was comparing it to the patrick kane situation in that patrick kane had to have surgery for his injury right and that's why he's been out for so long but he delayed his surgery so that he could play in the playoffs with the new york rangers and have that little run and he was talking about how most nhl players when they
Starting point is 00:16:41 reach the age of 30 and above they're all managing injuries and at any point they can make the decision and say hey i'm done managing this injury i'm gonna go get the uh treatment for this injury i'm gonna go have the surgery i'm gonna take some time off i'm gonna go actually make this thing healthy or to the best of my abilities and it sounds like he was he was saying john klimberg it sounds like he's been doing this for a while he's had an injury that he's been managing it's okay to play with you know as long as he's talking to trainers he's doing everything he can play with this injury but it might come to the point where he has to make the decision to say i'm gonna actually go take care of this and i can't really manage it anymore the hip is tough yeah like it's
Starting point is 00:17:19 amazing he got the the surgery he did in 2014 and he's been able to have the career that he's had because like nicholas backstrom right he finally gets his hips repaired and he goes i feel the best i've ever felt and he didn't even last a month and he goes you know what i have to step away uh jesse pulley rv is going through something very similar who knows if he's gonna come back um like the the backstrom stuff i was like oh well that's good news for patrick kane uh apparently not like who knows like he might be he might have finally fixed what ails him he comes back and he has you know another half decade of greatness or he's done entirely he tries it for three months and he's he's like he's done yeah ryan kessler i think
Starting point is 00:18:04 had a similar injury done yeah and he managed it and held on for a long time and i believe he had a he had an article where he talked about like painkillers and stuff like that like i don't think this is merely leaf's caption in a gannery if it was no if it was he wouldn't have come to sweden he came to sweden shelvin keith talks on wednesday about how he was trying to play on the game on sunday he came to sweden with the intention of playing both games and he couldn't get into either of them so here's the other part of it guys and i this is the elephant in the room but i think we gotta we gotta bring it up part of what stings here i think is that john klingberg turned down reportedly something close to 50 million dollars in dallas yes way back when yeah and that coincided
Starting point is 00:18:55 with his play falling off and you know we saw it uh in toronto with cody franzen who turned down 25 million dollars and then proceeded he had a five-year contract on the table from the leafs five million bucks a piece and i don't know if he played two and a half more years yeah martin had a bad one too you know that is you know that's the thing is that like you know obviously we always say go get your money get your money but to uh uh for anybody that watched succession sometimes you got to take the fucking money. And I think that to say that, to look at the John Klingberg situation without that lens, I think would be inaccurate. I think that that's probably weighing on him. I think he wanted that contract when he signed in Anaheim. He wanted that
Starting point is 00:19:40 contract when he signed in Toronto. And it's got to be extraordinarily painful knowing that and seeing it potentially slip away. Now, here's the question. I don't know what's wrong with his so if he goes and has another operation and let's say he's out for 12 months but he's able to get get back because athletes are mutants and get get healthy again is there is there a playing career after that i don't know it's possible um like one of the things i had heard is um remember we talked about jack eichel and uh it was the disc replacement surgery or the uh spinal fusion and the problem with the spinal fusion is you have to get it redone like every decade or so and he was too young of a man to have that redone every decade my understanding is
Starting point is 00:20:22 clangberg surgery will eventually need to be redone i don't know if that's true yeah especially if he keeps playing on it i think that was because if he if he wants to have it and then come back and keep playing on it then it might be a comma recording problem and it's one thing if you're a star if you're a star and you need to take a year away someone will want you when you come back well look at patrick kane yes exactly and like he wasn't even that effective last year and he and he's not been gone a year and he's not been gone and he had eight to ten zoom calls last week with different teams around the national hockey league as all these reporters are reporting like that's news yeah well and you know klingberg i don't know if he's that caliber of player like
Starting point is 00:21:02 if he wants to go to sweden maybe or somewhere else in play i'm sure he could but you know like adam alluded to he's he's not going to make that money um you know also i'm sure he just likes playing hockey like yeah this is well yeah he's also made millions he has he could have made i guess tens of millions of more dollars but he's also made millions i haven't looked at his account uh he's never won the cup i'm sure he wants to win the cup he's come really close he went to the stanley cup final with dallas um being a professional hockey player is probably a lot of fun oh and i think it's it's worth something to hold on to like to every last morsel you can you know you want to try and continue that dream lilligren had the opportunity to he had a couple
Starting point is 00:21:51 weeks to make peace with the fact i'm not playing in sweden yeah i'm hurt i'm not playing fault is that it's brad marchand thank you and uh thanks for nothing wes uh and you know i i i hurt myself oh well i'm gonna go to this movie premiere i'm gonna see some family gonna see some friends gonna support the boys hopefully we win klingberg was trying to play he didn't have time to make peace with that so like i know i'm making uh a topic that people are talking about kind of lightheartedly really depressing but like there is a very human element to this john klingberg story did you ask him any questions uh i didn't um because he was he was kind of mobbed uh in the corner by a bunch of reporters i didn't recognize so i assumed it was the swedish media that and
Starting point is 00:22:38 they were all tall and blonde um i uh i i went and talked to uh robertson was that your first time in a leaf's dressing room uh no it was my first time in a leaf's dressing room credentialed under my own company um but no no i've i uh i've been in the leaf's dressing room lots of times okay yeah nuts i know you've been a lot in the marley's yes i wasn't sure well actually i've only been in the marlies a handful of times because they to the chagrin of a lot of veteran writers don't allow reporters in the room they bring them out i i don't know if that's changed this year but under under kyle dubas they brought players out and reporters hated that but i was like particular guy i was yeah damien cox really hated it but like i preferred it i didn't see the
Starting point is 00:23:29 big deal no there's not a difference between you get a guy in his underwear in the dressing room or he comes out and talks to you i mean willie willie still has a shirt off man yeah yeah so if you want to see some skin there it is there's no difference shirt off with a wall or a shirt off with a backdrop or the shirt's off tarps off no i uh it's it's not that magical um being in the the locker room i i was happy to be there on principle uh brad tra living made an appearance which is i know not common no questions um no he wasn't he wasn't taking questions i think he was just um taking a peek and walking around yeah yeah because i mean it's not the leafs dressing room it's friggin uh globe and vichy arena i think i think he was just checking it out it was
Starting point is 00:24:16 interesting the leafs slew everybody there like from the biggest executives to everybody to the bottom like everybody was kind of there carlton the bear was a big deal yeah yeah the bear was there amazing isn't it yeah very popular carl do you talk to matt's uh i didn't talk to matt so he he did an event with willie and it was like they did like a 15 20 minute um like just q a at the fan zone which was nowhere near the arena by the way and uh it was near all the hotels which i think was strategic and by a very beautiful park where where they had a um uh rink around a statue you um uh way way nicer than nathan phillips square i'll tell you that um but no it was nice to see matt's out and about because he was not really advertised with this event at all like
Starting point is 00:25:04 ty domey mentioned in an interview that he was looking forward to seeing sundine and as far as i know that was the first confirmation i had seen that he was even gonna be there um i assumed he was going to be there like the leafs are going to play nhl games not far from where he lives how could you not how could you not so no he came out he gave the most valuable player award and dropped the puck and yeah did the the um the pre-game uh he he gave the starting lineup like that's sick yeah that's really cool i was i was very pleased to see how active sundine was there were there were rumors you had to kind of spot him there were rumors of a but like there were things circulating that potentially things are not good with him in the leafs a tift
Starting point is 00:25:48 i and a tift a tift i think it's a rift and a tiff yeah i think you combine them but they mean the same thing i want a rift and a tiff there's the same thing um i think awful what shaq said yeah it was was it him or chuck yeah no it wasn't chuck it was the uh sideline reporter who sat sadly since past he had that really bad suit oh yeah you gotta change that suit it's horror awful yeah yeah burn it um i i i think that it was great to see matt's involved and and basically matt's is extraordinarily private always has been uh which rubbed people the wrong way when he was in toronto so i don't know if there's a a tift between him and the least organization but i wouldn't be surprised if it comes across that way and there isn't one because
Starting point is 00:26:33 he's very quiet and that like he doesn't give interviews like when we got him which is weird because rome again was the same way we did that tournament a few years ago and we got to sit and interview matt's yep yes you know that we were like the only north american outlet for like five years that got an interview with him we were very lucky very very very people were like do you realize how hard that is to get yeah uh and he was great with us he was really great but it's one of those where i i don't know if there is a an issue all of the people that were there when matt's left have been fired including ownership which has changed several times except for cliff except for cliff cliff is still there yeah there's us there's a god damn i gotta go on a diet
Starting point is 00:27:12 you look so young what was six years skinny jesse the word is skinny no you look like the exact same look at your face little baby face a little yeah minus the baby he even smiled look at that we got him to smile and he said that day we're like who are you excited about in sweden he's like peterson he did say peterson and he was like great peterson had never played a game yet you're right yeah you're absolutely right yeah definitely a worthwhile watchmate can we link to it in the description yeah i can definitely do that that's fun all right now since we brought up our favorite sweet let's bring up a sweet from sweden as in for the noxian keck show yes dude i've been wanting to try this since i landed there because it was everywhere okay i love
Starting point is 00:27:54 wafer chocolate and i think chocolate must mean chocolate right the great thing about uh swedish is um like obviously i don't speak it but enough of the words are similar enough to english it's almost english yeah like uh there was an item on the menu at the espresso house uh there were so many uh there was an item on the menu i'm like hey drew what do you think that that is it was called warm chocolate uh jesse grab a grab a little piece there my man i'm sorry i was looking back on the matt's interview still right away so i also need to grab one too it looks exactly like kit kat okay what do we like what do we think what do we think very similar to a kit kat but like you said it tastes like chocolate yes like really good you're
Starting point is 00:28:46 like oh this chocolate hits different you know what the outer chocolate part tastes a lot like a kinder surprise you know you taste it yeah that's a good point it's like almost like a nutella yeah the kit kat is more chunky chewy chocolate and less crispy wafer this is less chocolate more crispy wafer i love wafer that's good you have a treat thank you steve how's everyone's misophonia doing whatever how are you how are you doing was this brent key who brought this who gave this to you guys no no brent emailed us and said he give us all the names um you have the names victoria eric jesper and lisette from gothenburg sweden oh yes so they were they were our like adoptive family while we were there they um

Starting point is 00:36:11 in a rush and the leafs have won four straight so why would they be yeah like that's a very important factor isn't it they've won four straight games and it's not like their defenses look particularly terrible no not like the oilers which is our next topic man they had a nice what was it like five days where they were happy yep yeah they lost again last night five three game They've blown multiple multi-goal games this year so far. On the road this year, can anyone tell me what the Oilers' record is? On the road. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Well, they have, I think, five wins on the season, five or six. I'm going to say they're one and one, six, and two. Jesse, road record for the Edmonton Oilers. Road record for the Edmonton Oilers. Well, let's see. They probably have two wins. That's my guess. You are correct.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Two, six and one. Two, seven and oh. Two, seven and oh. Oh, that's very close. You both were very close because you both, you got the points right. You got the wins right. There you go. That's four out of 18 points.
Starting point is 00:37:18 Yeah. Oh my God. And McDavid scored on the penalty shot. Really didn't matter in the end. He had as many goals as Nico Mikula, which would usually be an insult. Now, the Oilers were terrible in their own end. And listen, the goaltending is bad. But let's talk about the defense.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Jesse, I'm assuming what you have up on your screen there is about the defense, is it not? Yeah, yeah. Do you want to take us through? I didn't get a chance to watch. Do you want to go for a little, let's take this puppy for a spin because this is absolutely bonkers.
Starting point is 00:37:43 It's just one particular play here by Mr. Number Two, Evan Boudiard. Well, okay, before you even start, every bad play with him on the ice starts with him standing completely upright. He's not bent over, his knees aren't bent, he's not doing shit. So there's a couple moments,
Starting point is 00:38:01 This is the 4-3 goal in the late in the second period. The Panthers are bringing the puck into the zone. And there's a couple of things that really stand out here. One, we're going to highlight Evan Bouchard. So the Panthers enter the zone and we get to the point where they are in there and there's three Panthers deep. There's three Panthers kind of deep in the zone. Evan Bouchard is trailing the play. He's number two, by the way.
Starting point is 00:38:27 He is a defenseman. His job is to be down low. Now, he does, in his defense, which is thin, he has support. Totally. So I'm sure he, like, I don't know what he did leading up to this, but he had support. This looks like a situation that is relatively well handled. Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:45 He had pinched a little harder on the other side of the ice, so he's trailing the play, but he's also the defenseman responsible to get down deep and play some defense. So he comes in as the fourth player entering the zone as the Panthers already have the puck deep, And he lazily skates to the front of the net behind everybody. Oh, that looks like a stride.
Starting point is 00:39:05 Oh, yeah. He got there with the step. He proceeds to stand next to the front of the net while the puck is worked around. There's a shot. And instead of doing anything remotely that we would constitute defense, he kind of just stands around, allows Florida to make a play on the puck, and it eventually leads to a goal. He's man.
Starting point is 00:39:26 He's there right in the middle. the entire play not really hanging out and doing anything you've got to be better than that man you've got to be better than that like don't don't fumble this bag and now that it's off screen you guys can watch it you can watch it in full time just so we can jesse does he have a contract after we watch this play i can pull it up so yeah this is the play he's skating in you'll see how lazily it is in real time move your feet just goes for a walk around that little spin he does here where he just comes around he just kind of hangs out that's a real steve dangle move right there i have heart he can't physically skate better than that evan can uh that's awful did
Starting point is 00:40:10 you see the matthias at home thing where he fired it tried to clear the zone and zach hyman was going for his stick because his stick had snapped no it went off of zach hyman's back and then florida grabbed it and scored oh like just bad luck and and bad goaltending and bad defense you're asking about the contracts evan bouchard is has two years left on his deal 3.9 this year 3.9 next year and then he is still an rfa in 2025 when he's uh when that contract's up well like he's gonna put up a billion points regardless but like i don't know you could have just kept tyson berry if you're like this guy's just bigger slower tyson berry yeah oh you put up points in the oilers power play well fuck incredible like okay how many how much better or worse would any oiler
Starting point is 00:41:00 on that list be any oil like you go five forwards how many how many points would vinny day harney put up on the oilers top power play unit oh man you know he'd be in there cody cc matias like dude yeah i'm not saying quarterbacking an nhl power play is easy i'm just saying you have maybe the cushiest job in the league which is being mcdavid and dry sidles like quarterback of the top power play yeah move your feet of his 17 points this year seven came on the power play come on oh i mean that's not bad like 10 even strength points yeah that's fine i yeah what's what's uh what's the goals for and against situation yeah i'm sure it's not that great uh calvin pickard made his first start since may 27th 2022 um he was okay uh found out that jack campbell obviously we went
Starting point is 00:41:58 through his numbers the last time we talked uh not going well in the ahl the oilers were secretly hoping that he would find his game in the ahl when they sent him down his numbers are worse i feel terrible for him absolutely because you you only want good things for jack campbell he's a good person um and maybe he does find his game later on so what do the Oilers do now and I think you're at the point where you do like unlike the Leafs who won four straight and actually and I and I'm not trying to take a shot at Klingberg here but they do look much better without him in the lineup well they have a healthy player playing as opposed to a hurt one exactly right so you know the Leafs situation sort of stabilized and they were never bad it was just they played bad and
Starting point is 00:42:36 you knew they were better than this yeah the Oilers you're starting to question whether they are actually better than this they're my cup pick and I'm starting to feel stupid so one team that they have reached out to and have expressed interest in three goalies is the Montreal Canadians Sam Montembeau uh Caden Primo uh Primo excuse me why did I read it like that and then Jake Allen and what's interesting here is uh Montembeau seems to be the odds-on favorite until Montreal can figure out his contract situation so if they don't figure out a contract with him he could be the one to go that's the one Edmonton wants I was looking at this and going man you need a veteran who isn't going to be shaken by much who's taken a lot who's had a
Starting point is 00:43:19 lot of rubber shot at him in the last couple years Jake Allen seems like to me I mean maybe maybe it's the money thing I know I'm reading this like a book I think this is a Kent Hughes masterstroke what do you mean kent hughes so i know montreal hasn't been the best they've they've been pretty good um i'm a bigger fan of their rebuild than some um you know at some point you're gonna have to win games consistently make the playoffs and everything but like they have guys coming up and people talk about their lack of star power i think they have more star power than people give them credit for and it's gonna come if montreal has a good team players will go there i don't think that'll be a problem but montreal's in contract talks with sam montembeau
Starting point is 00:44:08 you say sign the contract or one way to keep the number down would be to say hey we're going to trade you to one of the seven teams that no one wants to freaking go to which is the edmonton oilers and the leafs are often on that list too all the canadian teams are montembeau and jake Allen are both Quebecois I believe um and they both want to be there like Jake Allen could have gone to a lot of places he's chosen to stay in Montreal he's re-signed I believe uh I believe they traded for him and then they re-signed him yes uh Montembeau I mean what a success story I think the Habs claimed him off waivers yeah from the Panthers uh and now here he is he's in Montreal all he's been found money i'm sure he would want to stay well turns out they just happen to be in
Starting point is 00:45:04 the middle of contract talks listen sam we got a team we're building for the future here and if you're not interested in being part of our window that's okay you played some great games for us we can send you somewhere else and that somewhere else is with respect one of the least desired destinations in the league i think it should be a higher desire destination like lots of places in the league are cold you get to play with connor mcdavid they're probably a goalie away from riding the ship and you're a goalie like i think there's lots of reasons that edmonton should be attractive to a goalie but i think specifically in this situation montembeau and alan want to be uh habs and caden primo with respect i'm not convinced
Starting point is 00:45:56 helps that situation jake allen's also got that modified no trade clause which is i think seven teams let me just click it you think it's uh seven team no trade list so i wonder if edmonton is on that trade list if you i think if you see players with three they're probably on that and you know that it might not be an option to trade jake allen to edmonton which is why we heard montembeau's name first yeah right so and i don't think you're trading kate and primo just because of his age and that contract 890 you know i mean at this point in his career you might as well just keep him see if he improves or exactly um montembeau yeah you could get a lot for and you have a desperate team in edmonton like kent hughes holds all the leverage here on both
Starting point is 00:46:41 parties yeah i i really do think he's doing a great job i i don't think edmonton should be chasing the goalie situation because i don't think they're just a goalie away like going acquiring a goalie away from fixing all their issues i feel like they can figure it out with stewart skinner if they want to fix their goalie situation you know you just keep trying to right the ship with skinner and you work your things out with campbell and you have picker play occasionally and that sort of stuff but um yeah the way they're sitting right now you know you look at the standings and columbus is melting right now like i assume we'll get to line a being scratched oh we're going we're going there next yeah and and their absolute shit show they're melting
Starting point is 00:47:19 everything's on fire in columbus edmonton's below them in the standings oh my god and columbus is nine straight yeah so we things aren't good in edmonton and it's not just a goalie problem it's an everything problem and to to just go acquire media and form a referee problem it's to go acquire sam montembeau doesn't automatically make everything in edmonton good no it doesn't you know who a goalie is who actually kind of specifies playing he or specializes in playing better goaltending for teams who give up a shitload of shots james reimer like i'm not kidding the oilers should be uh calling steve eisenman every day because they have they've been carrying three goalies yeah and it's not nobody does that in 2023 nhl world yeah like i know like red wings
Starting point is 00:48:07 fans chastise me at the beginning of the season for saying justin hall was healthy scratched sorry he wasn't healthy scratched he was merely merely healthy while scratched um like i know it was in a rotation situation but like it's a really weird situation because all the red wings fans i spoke to um during it was the the first game the Sens Red Wings game Petrie's awful yeah he's freaking awful to the point where like okay I understand you're trying to keep Hall fresh I think he's good man I think he's fine we said it on the last the last time we talked about it you have a rotation and you signed a guy for three years at three and a half million and you're gonna rotate him off yeah it's I know you have the cap room now it's still I still
Starting point is 00:48:52 don't think it's a good idea but you i think you got a point about the goalies yeah yeah well like i think it makes slightly more sense for the defenseman like even petrie is making i think like close to three million for the rotation situation but um no team does this for a long period of time it's worked out for detroit because i believe philly husso is hurt and that's that's why it was reimer lion in sweden yeah what it wasn't hurt was it a family thing he took a leave forth oh maybe maybe or something maybe i forget no one i spoke to knew but well i i assume he wasn't available otherwise we would have seen him um but you know if he returns assuming he returns and he's playing he he had a daughter oh yeah hey there you go congrats him so you know
Starting point is 00:49:39 once once he's back from all that and playing well like what are you doing what are you doing you got to trade one of those guys and like i think they both signed there knowing that was a possibility yeah you have three nhl caliber goalies how you can't hold on to them for the entire season i mean maybe they made that it's possible they made that signing with this in mind like trading it and getting assets well trading and getting assets but also like hey my wife's gonna have a child like a month into the season i don't know oh and it could just be that that we're not sure which of these two are going to work out we got three we feel like one of them is going to be fine where did what about the other two i don't know what their numbers are
Starting point is 00:50:20 i don't know in sweden lion was better but yeah oh dear i oh dear james yeah this is the thing the oilers though like again we we say all this but if at what you know our last show will be in and around the 20th of december or like our we'll do some 22nd 22nd i think that's the friday that's the friday when everybody gets off school right yeah so that's the one we'll do okay so so a month from now a month and a day okay we could be sitting here going wow what a tear the oilers have been on they've won eight of the last 10 this is crazy they won what was it three or four straight games good thing they didn't make that stupid trade we proposed like it could this is a team that could do that like i don't i don't look at the columbus blue jackets and say man
Starting point is 00:51:04 there's a team do ah don't worry they're gonna write the ship yeah no you don't see that right so so you say all that but then like if you're like ken holland's not in charge anymore we know that if you're jeff jackson um this is your first year as ceo so you get to you get to look at this and go well it's not my fault and you can go to the owner and go it's not my fault there's not much i could do you're the gm you hired and gave carte blanche to mess this up i have a lot of work well when you look at next year's cap situation and you go oh i don't have any cap space well that is actually very much your fault you didn't have to you didn't have to advocate for your client how'd you lose you lost a negotiation with yourself very literally yeah his future self
Starting point is 00:51:47 yeah yeah well like you you you negotiated the connor brown contract took the job with the oilers and had the option to not screw yourself over and then did it it's such a wild like i've never seen something like that play out the man signed the contract and then took the job where he's now in control of that contract it's insane i i flagged this weeks ago like if jeff jackson were to say connor we're not going to play anymore like he would have looked like such a snake but now you're like wait like is your boss going to be happy that you're spending like three million plus to just do right by a guy that's a literally what happened like i'm not anti-connor brown i'm happy he's getting his money i love i love
Starting point is 00:52:43 connor oh yeah but fuck like that's a terrible situation so the salary cap is supposed to go up next year the edmonton oilers will be working against this year's salary cap because whatever it goes up to has already been spent yes on a player who does not have to play there next year connor brown does not have a contract for next year it's just his bonus that is on there he can sign in cal he can go sign wherever he wants ideally he plays well and you keep but then he gets another contract i'm curious with his bonus like the oilers are just full of situations that i believe could get better and none of them have the only one that's gotten better is mcdavid is starting to score yeah two goals i think yeah um nothing else is getting better like connor brown
Starting point is 00:53:26 yeah i believe you can come well leon drysad only has six goals and that's at 24 points i know but you need more goals from them right yeah this i mean and that's unfair so unfair but kind of do don't you yeah um i want to i want to throw this at you um why is it that patrick kane who was effective at times not effective at other times but scored a little bit with new york why is he gonna get a one million dollar contract and connor brown got a four million dollar contract he doesn't want a one million is what they're saying he wants multiple years and stuff like that but it seems like everybody's been offering him like hey here's a million for a year yeah and so so and why why because they're unsure of patrick kane and his health right yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:54:12 connor brown didn't play last year why is he making four million dollars ken holland and and i i think there's an jeff jackson's a good agent yeah there's an element of the uh of the edmonton tax there's an element of ken holland's not terribly good at this um i don't know what else to tell you who and like also kane wants to go to a contender and most contenders don't have space yeah that's fair part of it part of it but you're telling me the great point if the leafs had wanted to go get connor brown for depth and they'd offered him 775 which is i believe minimum yeah would you have been like like would you have been more surprised that he signed for that or for four million because i i'm way more surprised at the four million i'm surprised anybody gave it to
Starting point is 00:54:59 him and it's not because i don't like connor brown the player i don't know that connor brown at his best when he was his very very best would be much more than a five million dollar player today when he was scoring 25 goals a year 20 goals or whatever it was sends connor brown was was was maybe a five million dollar player so you're taking a bet on a guy that hasn't played for a year and you're expecting him to come back to 80 of what he was well here's what i think has been ruined because the bruins screwed it up for everybody by offering those two deals to creche and bergeron that were bonus laden and it was like oh yeah if you play 10 games well what have we discovered this season 10 games is friggin nothing also creche and bergeron had accomplished far more yes and
Starting point is 00:55:45 we're deserving of it and and it's not again going well for the bruins yes so with connor brown's situation nothing's going well like the the oilers ignored their fail safe yes the fail safe yes is if things are going well you go forward if things are going well you go all right we're going to go into overage next year it's fine because they thought they were in the same position as the bruins what happened they fell flat on their face out of the gate they had their fail safe okay we're right up against it we don't have to start connor brown and if we don't we save ourselves from ourselves they ignored it the whole reason to give connor brown the bonus for next year and make it kick in at 10 games was that so you'd have a nine game evaluation period they had
Starting point is 00:56:33 their nine game evaluation period and things were garbage and they said oh well i don't have a problem with the idea of a contract like that but it's got to be more than 10 why didn't you just it's not enough why didn't they just give them the money i don't know why have the evaluation period if you're going to completely ignore the results they couldn't afford it they couldn't afford it but now next year they won't be able to afford it but but the i think what they were counting on is next year it'll be even tighter but we won't give a shit because we'll have a banner and it's not working out that way right now jeff jackson is a fantastic negotiator and he uh took ken holland's lunch money and then said i'm also your boss it's you ever seen liar liar no with
Starting point is 00:57:17 jim carrey i know of the movie yes i have scenes but i don't remember anything adam have you seen it yes i have they walk into the bathroom what are you doing i'm kicking my ass yeah jeff jackson beat his own ass yeah he did well and and again i i ask if you've got this if you're gonna sign this bonus laden four million dollar contract is connor brown the guy you're using it on yeah but you're like david and brown are buddies i dude i i cannot sit here and say in the summer i didn't think this was a good idea yeah i thought it was a good idea dollars steve at the price i was surprised at the price tag here's the thing the bonuses doesn't it doesn't have to be games played it'd be 20 goals well 15 goals what i just say with ken hughes right like well the leafs want
Starting point is 00:58:05 him too good that's part of the reason the price was so high the least we're trying what's it the least we're trying to get them they were the runner up yeah but so one one thing in these negotiations i was thinking about with gms is who are you negotiating against because you always see on july 1st they'll hand out these giant deals i'm like but who is willing to pay that much who's willing to pay those three million dollars justin hall you know like who is eisenman going up against with the connor brown negotiating i don't think anybody was going to give him that much money no there's no way the least would have could have afforded four million dollars for connor brown you're you know what's funny and i've learned over the years jesse like just anecdotally is
Starting point is 00:58:41 whenever you think that like whenever you think no one else is offering that money you're usually wrong it's it's actually wild how often a player does not take the highest offer it's very rare that we get mike hoffman did you see that funny quote recently the someone was like oh why'd you go to montreal uh they offered me more money good for you mike go and get it his career hasn't gone great but you know he got the bag he did what we said klingberg should have done where okay there's my meal ticket i'm gonna i'm gonna uh pay for it um someone is always willing to offer more why did the leafs offer reeves like reeves we know reeves we know minnesota wanted him back yes and that's who they were negotiating against connor brown who was willing to give him all of
Starting point is 00:59:32 that money dog you know leaf signed martyr for too much columbus offered him more as um you know the leaf signed tavaris for too much san jose san jose offered him two million dollars a year more the team give me the team who's willing to pay connor brown four million dollars it was i think it was the Leafs no Edmonton and that's it because of McDavid and Jeff Jackson well Edmonton I think had the highest bid but like I don't think the Leafs were far behind it came down to those two really you think the Leafs were gonna give Connor Brown I think I don't know what if he if he wanted to play in Toronto it had to be for a million or less I mean I think yeah I think no there's no way the Leafs can afford that next going with Willie's contract next year they're gonna put bonus on their
Starting point is 01:00:15 cap for next it'd be a great way to get fired before he starts maybe they offered him more um base and not the bonus yeah i would how do you turn down the bonus you're like holy shit i basically didn't play hockey for a year of my life and someone is offering to just keep my salary where it was i signed that contract every time if i'm him yep agreed oh yeah listen i don't i don't blame connor brown sorry got this weird cough that it's not a cold but it's like it's just sitting there and everybody in my family has it drew and i weren't able to breathe the entire time we were in sweden because it was so dry oh dude literally the second our plane touched down not even canada in the uk i just went i need that wet air is it like just the temperature
Starting point is 01:01:03 like what is dry it's dry air three or four degrees colder than here it's just air it's because they're not like that much more north than us i have no idea i don't know i think it was it's just really dry yeah i the uh i can tell you this when i moved to calgary one of my buddies uh who was my um party marty who was my roommate marty was also from ontario and he had to go for like special skin treatments under like uv or something like that because it was so dry and his skin wasn't used to it in calgary in calgary it's a it's it's an they call it semi-arid so it's like almost desert um so i would imagine that uh especially in the wintertime nordic countries would be like that it's super dry super chapped lips everything oh
Starting point is 01:01:44 yeah um the second i touched down i was like like my my body just like absorbed it like a freaking plant this episode is brought to you by better help now it is that part of the year where the sun sets early and i'm not gonna lie to you the the scary set in for me sometimes november is a tough month i i find the two months i find toughest are november and march and the reason for that is november is kind of at least in canada it's like the dark in between yeah you know at least in the states you know you got thanksgiving weekend coming up the soggy months yeah yeah and march is like i'm waiting for summer but it's still minus 20 um so you know i it i find that on those months i book my therapy sessions a little bit more i go to therapy like once a month but that's
Starting point is 01:02:30 that's a twice or three times a month thing just to kind of get myself out of my own head and you know if that's something you're looking for better help is a really great option for you because they match you with somebody in 24 hours 24 to 48 excuse me i just want to make sure you got that right and then of course you can do it over text you can do a video you can do whatever you're comfortable with uh someone actually uh in sweden told me how much better help help oh really yeah so that uh that uh that felt really cool to me it's global global that's right and you can try it right now. Starting point is 01:04:13 eighth in the metro their record is 4 11 and 4 which is actually quite satisfying to look at 4 one one four what's the oilers record uh well the the their road record is two seven and oh i don't know what the oilers record is hang on hang on um but uh beyond that um they have estimated the the blue jackets what's that i overestimated the blue jackets same and and there are changes that they made on d i thought would make them so much better oilers are five eleven and one five eleven and one and blue jackets are four eleven and four less points oh my god columbus has more points yeah yeah because he gary batman um patrick linea and johnny gaudreau have been benched recently but linea was healthy scratch this weekend um they did not put him on the wing
Starting point is 01:04:59 before benching him man they're determined eh uh get it and believe it or not this will shock you apparently they're working the phones trying to find a centerman yeah you think yeah uh now Well, we have to look at this organization the way that we did just a couple months ago in September. They did not do the due diligence with the coach that they hired. They had to quickly fire that coach after he spent multiple minutes looking through people's phones and swiping without their permission. They had to hire Pascal Vincent, which, you know, universally was known as a good hire, but he had to jump in after a gigantic embarrassment for the organization. You have a couple of good young players in Fantilli and Juracek. You got a revamped blue line with Provorov and Severson, who is now out for six weeks.
Starting point is 01:05:46 And we're six weeks into the season. And you'll look about as good as you did last year when you were also awful. So I look at the Mike Babcock situation as a microcosm of what is wrong in Columbus. Right. And what has continually been wrong. how they handled mike babcock is very likely how they handle a lot of things yeah and and so what do we what do we remember from that i remember pulling remember i went back and dug up the press conference and it was like yeah we talked to ken hitchcock yeah and we uh we we shouted into the
Starting point is 01:06:25 echo chamber and we're shocked to hear our own voice it's crazy right yes um and i look at this and i go okay so they clearly love having their ideas confirmed right hey i've got an idea who's going to agree with me let me call them that's my reference check line they should be a center enter enter yeah where he never played or scored before and they've tried this for two years man john davidson and yarmo kekalainen these guys have been with this organization more than a decade at what point do you say the decision process here is flawed and these guys are not the guys because i don't know like we we talked about the safest job in canada being an nhl general manager for a canadian team i think it's in columbus it's unjustifiable that columbus hasn't
Starting point is 01:07:14 axed at least one of those guys and davidson and kakaline do you remember the owner after mike babcock was fired he released a statement he said he's there's going to be no more change in columbus yeah but he was also pissed he was very pissed but he said just to settle things down there's not going to be any changes in the general manager or president spot oh well here they are nice and settled at the bottom of the ocean yeah well one of the things that i think perplexed people was when gadreau left the flames was like why columbus right now probably it was because the flyers made the tony d'angelo trade that's probably why gadreau is not a philadelphia They could not make the offer.
Starting point is 01:07:50 They couldn't even make an offer. We know that the Islanders were probably in on him, and they were probably in on Kadri as well. But Gaudreau was trying to get to the East Coast. That's what we were told. New Jersey could have made an offer. I don't know if their offer came high enough. I don't think they did.
Starting point is 01:08:06 The Flyers did not make an offer because of the Tony D'Angelo trade because they had to make that trade. The Islanders made an offer. Gaudreau wasn't interested because, frankly, I think that if I'm Gaudreau and it's that summer, i'm looking at things like the islanders don't really play my my style they don't play i just got out of brent sutter's system like i i don't want to go back into another one it's i mean this might sound strange to say but why would the islanders want him and like i i'm i gotta go
Starting point is 01:08:32 back in time and be like okay he had 40 goals he had over 100 points but like the way they win games and the way that like they're still pretty middle of the pack who wants to play them in the playoffs uh yeah no thanks like they'll beat the shit out of you yeah they're four check they have good d they have a good goalie it'll be frustrating that's a playoff team yep it'll be extremely frustrating they're going to struggle to score goals so are you it's it's not going to be fun so yarmo yarmo has this beautiful opportunity fall into his lap where he gets a big win jar yarmo and john i'm going to put them together jd is apparently behind the scenes extraordinarily involved in player personnel decisions so it's it's difficult to put pin
Starting point is 01:09:13 this all on yarmo knowing what we know and you have johnny gaudreau plopped into this situation when you look at it in retrospect and people at the time said this too so i want to give them the credit why why did you sign him that's not where you were at in your development curve you were a rebuilding franchise they had a recent victory uh with zach wierenski where we all thought he was going and they were able to keep him and that was their flag in the sand um in columbus we are willing to spend money an opportunity presented itself a very rare opportunity presented itself like that's got to be the biggest free agent they've ever signed yeah him and like ron tugnut like an adam foot maybe trying to think of a bigger one and like just in terms of he went to
Starting point is 01:10:04 july 1st um they could have got anyone he could have gone anywhere they got him so we got a big rfa to stay and we got a ufa player to come here um here come the columbus blue jackets and then they part of the reason i thought they'd be better they go out and they get ivan proveroff And they go out and they get Damon Severson. And I want to say they had a couple other guys. They spent the money on good Branson, which I know isn't the greatest contract. But again, they're just like, we will spend the money.
Starting point is 01:10:36 They have good young players to be excited about. You know, their last two first round picks are very exciting prospects. Who do they got? Juracek and Fantilli. Oh my God. Oh my God. And while Juracek's not even on the team.
Starting point is 01:10:49 Yeah. So there's a lot of things going on there. The Juracek piece is very interesting because uh it was aaron port's line who had this in his article about line and all that um they told your check to uh buy a house in columbus like get ready you're staying here get a house in columbus and four days later after two healthy scratchers they sent him down to the ahl where's their minor league team uh i have no idea i forget i forget i forget syracuse crunch i'm not sure i i don't think this either way that's but like that's that's indicative of how they run their
Starting point is 01:11:25 organization from top to bottom you know you have your check who's supposed to take this next step you're telling them like you're making this team you're ready and then you send them down kent johnson same thing you finished fifth on the team in scoring last year can't make the team now he's gone there's apparently wasn't he playing center apparently he showed up to camp out of shape and that's a whole issue i think it's it speaks to the organization that they have that this this is happening and one thing that pascal vincian's been doing with the lines is not keeping them consistent at all i think it's 30 um i just had the numbers 35 different line combinations to start the game in 19 games yeah but like he 535 like that's a roster issue yeah i don't think
Starting point is 01:12:07 any coach thinks that's a good idea i think he's trying to take a team that is flatly not good enough on paper and trying to make them competitive and I mean is that not screaming his lungs out at his GM we need players
Starting point is 01:12:26 we're not good enough look I tried 35 different combinations you just hired me you're not going to fire me this team sucks man you got to give me something more yeah and I think it's a it feels like a cry for for help from pascal vincent's the way he's running it because the way he's been doing things is never
Starting point is 01:12:45 how you would coach a hockey team at all like i said the 35 different line combination line a line to start training camp was not a center he became a a center towards the end of training camp like a couple days before the season they tried him out there and then they started him at center and there's been a few games where he's played wing like he's been on the wing for a little bit and then they switch it back to center and then now just before his healthy scratching that he was that center is not working and there's been some awful uh plays by him but it sounds like a cry for help from pascal vincent that the the core of players we have here isn't working now but they weren't working last year either right and and so um what what is it about the people that are
Starting point is 01:13:25 making the decisions that is keeping them there is my point there how how do you continue to get to be employed there's an interesting situation here because like i'm sure there are people like maybe they should have just stuck with mike babcock no well like what would it have been more disruptive to keep him or fire him right before freaking camp starts i think given what happened and that it was a young player that flagged it yes the fact that it was a young player that flagged it tells me because nhl teams don't listen to young players no this is a young player of importance yes so here let me player of importance said this made me really uncomfortable to which the blue jacket said who do we value more and the answer was the young player which is rare
Starting point is 01:14:17 or recent or however you want to view it now i'm not advocating for mike babcock it's a problem of their own creation right it's not a good idea to fire your coach right before training no but i would i would say the problem was made when they hired him yes that's that's what i'm trying to say okay so the the it's not a good idea to fire your coach right before training camp well why'd you fire your coach right before training camp because you hired a liability an enormous liability and you didn't do any due diligence with uh from outside of your organization okay so this is sort of blue jackets management sleeping in the bed that they made and i think if they had an ownership that vaguely gave a shit about the team they'd fire at least one of davidson or kecker i think
Starting point is 01:15:10 their owner cares a lot but where the fuck is he he's trusting the wrong people i think he trusts who's in charge right now learn something about hockey but steve he took your advice which is you don't the owners don't want to get too involved yeah let the hockey people do the hockey things but you you you bet you've given these particular hockey people enough time well no they adam they won a first round series in 2019 and then a qualifying series the next year wow against the great 2019-20 toronto maple leafs yeah that's an awe-inspiring squad you know what i think i give them until 2029 no this group was able to pull that off i think you give them a decade what the fuck are we doing man you have the oilers who were like a cup favorite and they had a bad start to
Starting point is 01:16:00 the season and they're like you know what you're gone now i'm not saying that's the way you should run your team but like what what could yarmulke kalinin and john davidson do to get fired i think right now we're gonna do what is it four months left six months left in the season five months whatever it is we're gonna do a lot of screaming about columbus and at the end of this they're gonna be let go i think it's a matter of they don't want to make they don't want to have the the coach being fired right before the season and then we fire our president and gm uh two months into the season i think this is a hey in june they're gonna be gone well it's a million dollar fuck up you're you're paying a coach not to play for you you're gonna get fewer and fewer fans as
Starting point is 01:16:47 the regular season goes on that's going to affect gate you're not going to get playoff gate you acquired a bunch of players with aspirations of being better so now you have a team that's just as bad as last year but more expensive you like every decision they've made almost every decision they've made has been abject failure vincent said i coach a team and i don't coach individuals those guys were going uh they're going to play that's what we've been doing all year meaning um when on saturday gadreau and line a who got 14 minutes and 12 minutes of ice time now i i should ask i want to ask the question this doesn't look great on pascal vincent either does it no no no you ever you ever have the blender on for so long that you can start to
Starting point is 01:17:32 smell the plastic yes because that's cheap shitty blender yes yes that's the columbus blue jackets right now man like pick something that you're vaguely happy with stick to it hopefully it works with 35 combinations in like what 16 19 games 95 and 19 yeah oh man so they're that bad in the standings and they've played more than most yeah oh my god it's bad it's so bad like i'm not a fan of the amount of shaking that pascal vincent's doing with the lines and just scratching and you don't know who's getting time on ice every night like i'm not a fan of the way he's handling it but i think his hands are up in the air and he's saying i'm getting nothing out of this group and i don't know what to do and i think just to not disrupt the organization more your mo kick line
Starting point is 01:18:18 in and john davidson just got to play it out for the rest of the season as the owner looks at it that way and when he gets the end of it it's going to be such a shit show that they'll probably lose their jobs but that's just my prediction i don't know if it's gonna be right this is a cop out but like you know so much i think a big chunk of coaching in the nhl is situation like um we ran into dallas eakins um he was on our plane on the way back and uh i was just you know sort of thinking back on his career and you know he's obviously he doesn't have a job right now i think he was running some clinics uh over in stockholm and i'm like okay so he was part of the pre-mcdavid oilers and last year's ducks he wasn't given a like yeah dallas eakins was the one in that
Starting point is 01:19:04 commercial where it's like taking the bus to pretoria yeah you remember that commercial that ran it all the time during leafs game yeah yeah like it's okay it's like an actor needs to know when to turn down movie roles you know but there's only 32 jobs in the nhl and i have the chance to i mean in both situations he was so he was a highly coveted coach with the toronto marlies euler scooped him up ah nuts didn't work out he did a fantastic job with the san diego gulls in the ahl the natural progression is ducks fire their coach call them up ah like one of the worst teams last year they were so bad no and and now they're better this year and you go oh well that's proof Eakins sucks dude
Starting point is 01:19:48 Vetrano is one of the hottest scorers in the league he didn't have Minchukov who appears to be like a real difference maker for that team the real difference maker is Radko Gudis yeah Radko Gudis could you imagine Gudis and Eakins yeah so yeah not not to
Starting point is 01:20:05 take focus oh and Leo Carlson too like not to take focus oh yeah he's been kind of okay yeah not to take focus off of the Blue Jackets but poor Pascal Vincent like ah you know that he's been looking for a chance for a long time and it's good to see him finally get in there.
Starting point is 01:20:21 Yeah. By the way, for anybody who's screaming at their podcasting device or YouTube right now, the AHL affiliate for the Columbus Blue Jackets, last chance. Oh, I have no idea. Cleveland Monsters. Nailed it.
Starting point is 01:20:38 Isn't that used to be Colorado's? Oh, it's Lake Erie. Lake Erie Monsters. I think it used to be the Cleveland Monsters. No, it's Cleveland Monsters now. oh it is yeah drew's feeding us wrong information thanks adam was right adam was looking at it or at least hockey db says it is um you know i i think i don't even know where the heck i would have had them in in my previews but i did think they were going to be better than this
Starting point is 01:21:03 i just don't i never foresaw a situation where patrick line is going to be a centerman in the nhl i don't think he is i i thought it was fine last year when they were out of ideas and well yeah but now like they start the season with it i'm like oh so you just think this is smart okay well we'll see about that i think what they thought was they could turn him into tage thompson like here's a guy who played wing and we're gonna put him at center and he's gonna see the ice differently and he's gonna be great and it hasn't worked i don't i don't know why teams i don't know why the jets were like this and i don't know why specifically columbus has been like this patrick linea has scored 200 goals in 471 games the majority of those came in his
Starting point is 01:21:44 first four seasons with the jets isn't that crazy yeah most of those over 120 of those i think came in the first he was so so special i i don't understand why you don't let this special player be special at what they're specialized you know it's a remember remember when that that famous jeremy ronit quote about alexander ovechkin it was like 10 years ago and he was like he needs to be a student of the game needs to play more defense the he doesn't though you gotta get a Alex Ovechkin just needs to be Alex Ovechkin, right? He just needs to let other people do that. Get a playmaking center, put them with line A, profit.
Starting point is 01:22:17 That's it. And if you want somebody to play defense, have a Callie Yarncroke, a babysitter, and two players who can skate on the back. Here, stop being cowards. Be the first team to have three lines and four pairs. There you go. Whatever it takes. Screw it.
Starting point is 01:22:33 I think. Three lines, four pairs, and one spare forward. let him be because here's the thing so so last year when they played um line a at center what do you think his face-off percentage was guys face-off win percentage 44 okay jesse that's a pretty good guess i'm gonna go 47 35 oh my god holy shit what is it in nine games this year that's bad it's a slight improvement 39 40 jesse nailed it oh nice 40 percent dude that's awful yeah and at no point in his career if you look at just i'm just looking at face-off percentage he did take some face-offs in winnipeg at no point in his career winger win did it look as though he
Starting point is 01:23:23 could win face-offs yeah and i know that's not the be all end all of being a center sort of important though yeah wow and nobody accused him of being a 200 foot player and my point is why make him one uh well i mean you should you should try but he's 25 and he's not so let him let him do what he does which is score 40 goals and let somebody else play in the 200 foot game this reminds me this reminds me remember when the leafs extremely briefly were like we're gonna play jvr at center and people were talking themselves into oh yeah this could be a good idea and then they finally asked jvr about it and he's like uh i don't know i guess i could and and it's just like oh he doesn't even want that yeah it was it's such a weird decision because like who's asking
Starting point is 01:24:08 for this besides columbus who needs a center when you can just go out and sign a center or you could try to convert him just bring ken johnson up he's got 11 points in seven games you're and you're trying to make a trade he has 11 points in seven games in the ahl so what the fuck we're trying to make a trade just bring him up fifth on the team in scoring last year's at 21 years old what okay like it's not bad you made your point you know what i mean like yeah yeah he fucked up you don't do it again you made your point call him up stop punishing the team cutting off your nose to spite your face stop punishing the team for uh yeah i it's a private piles donut i get him get him in there man it's mystifying what they're doing i don't get it but here we are so we'll leave on
Starting point is 01:24:51 that because we got a show tomorrow yeah yeah and and guess what there are no games there are no games tonight what are we going to talk about tomorrow oh just other stuff we also have part two of the chocolate and candy tomorrow we're doing the the christmas coke do you want to do that right now oh yeah because we have brent's chocolates tomorrow okay so we can do these today all right do we have to do them all i don't know we can't sure it keeps what really Well, I'm not going to have any more because I am on the verge of an upset stomach and I'm not kidding. So I'm going to you guys go because I can't do the Christmas Coke. I can do the Christmas.
Starting point is 01:25:29 Okay, we'll do Christmas Coke. Then the rest of it. I can't do it. Okay. We'll do Christmas. Sorry. I have a very sensy stuff. So this is called.
Starting point is 01:25:37 Oh, boy. Apothecary's. You must. You must. Is it? It's a didn't explode. It's a Swedish Christmas soft drink, which will probably help with my cough. is it actually a christmas thing i just keep calling it that because there's snow on the front
Starting point is 01:25:54 what am i smelling jesse it's like dr pepper oh it's like dr pepper and licorice i think the smell smell it no like like dark licorice well yeah yeah let's do that here go ahead it's a very interesting smell i can't really like dark black licorice is uh just a little bit just a tiny teeny teeny teeny little bit that's good that's it's such an interesting smell no it's it's okay i don't know if that's more foam or what okay anyway because of how i poured it oh it does smell like black a little bit it smells like a like a what do they call them that they're uh like a like a liqueur what yeah what soap is this so it feels like a common soap smell it does smell like a liqueur tastes good yeah okay here
Starting point is 01:26:45 we go it's like um oh i like that it tastes like um like like black rum almost but what's the italian thing no one like no no no no it tastes like um liquefied panettone you mean the cake Yeah, the cake that everyone gives away and no one likes. I've never seen anybody like that. No one likes panettone. Jacked about the panettone. No one likes panettone. Liquefied panettone.
Starting point is 01:27:15 But I like this more than panettone. Is there a reason why panettone is always dry? No. It's like you eat it and it's like... Is there a reason for that? Because Italians do a lot of things right. A lot of things right, but they don't do moist pastry right. They do dry it out, but you're right.
Starting point is 01:27:33 like the biscotti but they nailed the biscotti nailed the biscotti nailed the almond cookies can somebody from woodbridge cook us a panettone for christmas and mail it to our offices oh uh jesse can tina glenn no no no because she's smart enough to not make it oh okay or buy it she's not dumb okay all right dumb man i like this i gotta say i like you must You thought I would have learned more Swedish I did not Well you were only there for a week But I'm sure you would have figured it out
Starting point is 01:28:10 I learned Lucibale and that is it Which translates something to like what Dick cookie or Oh it's St. Lucille's cookie Yeah same thing Send us a pan of toast Are we wrapping this thing up I think we should
