S-D-P-P.
The Steve Dangle Podcast.
With your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake
I'd like to start the show with a little shout out to the Brandon Wheat Kings
Specifically, Jake Chason, Calder Anderson, Nolan Ritchie, and Ben Thornton
Who saved a man's life on Tuesday evening
What?
He was apparently standing on a bridge
And was prepared to take his own life
They stopped to see if he was okay
And they ended up kind of talking him down
Which I think is pretty amazing
That's unreal
yeah so i don't know yeah he was he was distressed and and so anyway i think that's i just wanted to
do a quick shout out for them because that i think is a pretty fantastic thing and yeah yeah they
said uh uh so i guess they passed him first and then uh the driver who was rich he said the other
guys in the car told me to turn around went back he was sitting there uh and uh pointing down at
us and that we were like that's kind of super weird and they got out of the car asked if he
was okay he said he was having some bad thoughts um and they said i think the biggest thing in that
situation is just to ask the person if they need help and a few other people stopped and it was
uh obviously it was kind of scary for them but uh they're being you know obviously uh police said
they're great samaritans and i just thought that was worth a shout out to start the show that is
worth the shout out that's pretty nice that's incredible you know adam brought up the brandon
wheat kings and immediately my brain goes all right we're talking about the brandon wheat kings
go through your rolodex of all the things you know about the brandon wheat kings and then he said
what the story is about and i'm like none of those things are applicable what did you want to say i
don't know but no you just my brain prepares itself to talk about a certain topic and then
it's like nope you're gonna jump to like okay we're talking about brandon oh manitoba oh winnipeg
did you know that they once drafted a player from brandon manitoba named wheaton king
actually yeah he actually did in the lifestyle lifespan of the show didn't it it did i must
forgot it happened in recent memory and i said it anyway there you go didn't need to no brandon
wheaton wheaton king wheaton no no no no brandon just better wheaton king wheaton king how's he
doing what's his what's his db you know what why don't you bring now i got him adam's looking up
Wheaton King
Not Brandon Wheaton
Not Brandon Wheaton
The last time he played
Was for the South Alberta Institute of Technology
He had 7 points in 21 games
Has not played
He's 30 years old
From Brandon, Manitoba
Yeah, but he is from Brandon
So he's from
He's Brandon's Wheaton King
He's Brandon's Wheaton King
I think you guys are wrong about that happening recently
Yeah, I am wrong
Well, Adam said
You guys said it was within the life of the podcast
I thought it was
Which it is
Well, no, 30, you know, he was drafted in 0, 9, 10.
I was wrong.
Talking about three years before we started.
Close.
Yeah.
Close.
Whatever.
Shut up.
No, you know what?
I, cause I remember covering him from junior, which wasn't during the lifespan of the podcast,
but it was during the lifespan of my career.
Wow.
There you go.
All right.
There you go.
Hey, um, the quietest 18 game point streak we've ever seen.
Uh, the other day finally got loud the other day.
congratulations stand up stand up Mitchell Marner tying Eddie Olchuk and tying uh uh uh Daryl Sittler
you just want to show it to the most in yeah I know right uh for the most points uh like the
longest point streak in Leafs history which is amazing and I gotta tell you man growing up this
was never a possibility for any of the players we had as many great players as we did have
there was nobody on the Toronto Maple Leafs when we were growing up uh that was going to win you
a scoring title after doug gilmore after doug gilmore got a little close that one year um sunday
and i want to say it was top 10 yeah but like he'd be like 82 points in 82 games he was extremely
consistent and during the dead puck era yes so there was no shot nobody who was going to win
top goal scorer nobody who was going to win the heart trophy you thought maybe kujo had a shot at
the vesna outside once uh but but you know you've got matthews who's done the rocket twice and won
a heart and won a calder and then you've got mitch marner who is now setting records like this i think
it's pretty cool to be a leaf fan at the moment uh listen i oh yes we want to get out of the first
round i get the joke it's even funnier than 1967 but this is i think a major thing for mitch when
you watched the crowd reaction to mitch marner getting that goal at the end of the game which
by the way he messed up two times before that because he tried to pass it because he's mitch
Marner and he admitted that the crowd behind him I thought was a crowd behind him like I haven't
seen in a long long time it was so so good to see I'm so so glad he got it because there was a
moment when it was still 1-1 yep Leafs had the power play and he goes out for the power play I
think this was after the Sheldon Keefe timeout camera goes to Mitch Marner and he does this big
and i'm like why does he look nervous no come on man we freaking believe in you he's talking about
uh the first power play they ruined by trying to get mitch an assist or the second power play
they ruined by trying to get mitch an assist and willie just not shooting the puck and trying to
pass it to willie when he's wide open front of the net the easy story was mitch passing and then
also missing the net willie's was so much more egregious bro that's a tied game yeah what are
you doing the entire power play was okay working around make sure mitch has at least a touch by the
time somebody here shoots it willie's driving that make sure when mitch gets one you know
you know he's gonna be out there with the empty net just score yeah simply score anyway um but no
he was like nervous and i'm like dude you're gonna do it it's it's aaron your options are
arendelle or an empty net you're fine you're fine relaxed and then i'm so glad he was able to get it
i'm glad we all got you know a little whimsical chuckle out of it matthew's laughing bunting
laughing marner with his silly face that he made on the bench hooray i'm glad he got there i'd like
to see him break it me too this this couldn't be happening to a player who needs it more and kind
of deserves it more for like because everything we've been asking for mitch is just hey play well
and we'll all be fine you're the you're the toronto kid who plays in the toronto market
there's there's more pressure on you than everybody because you know the stakes that
are here and all we've asked is hey perform up to expectations perform up to your contract
perform to what everybody thinks you're doing that you can do and he's been doing it and it's
beautiful to see because i really think he deserves this moment because he hasn't really
had one he at the time he's been here it's kind of been like okay matthew's this show he's the one
who has the historic um a heart trophy run he has the 60 goals all that the calder trophy year
mitch has never really had his moment and it warms my heart to see that he's getting this and i think
he truly loves it he had the penalty shot against boston but that was in boston i like what's what's
the closest he's had to like the absolute spotlight is it the game winner uh against
carolina where he scored seven seconds after they tied it yeah no this is it because it like there's
the one-off games for sure that mitch has been dominant and all the time consistently through
his tenure but there's no extended run that we look back on like these 18 games and breaking
the record hopefully on saturday like this is this is his biggest moment right now and i hope
it continues like he deserves this there hasn't been this for mitch and it's great to see it and
i think it's gonna if this it's gonna be so good for his confidence yeah that's all we talked about
the beginning of the year and we talked about in the playoffs how his confidence wavers when things
aren't going well and how everything is going well take this momentum just know how this feels
and keep it going he's playing very happy for the guy i do got to imagine stuff like this drive
sheldon keith insane yes all coaches yeah that's why keith yandel isn't in the league nobody wanted
to deal with the fucking streak anymore nobody wants to deal with kessel streak milestones it's
different when there's like a nothing game at the end of the season and it's like all right pass to
austin until he scores twice that's our mission tonight it's this is game 25 points are extremely
valuable that game was not won yet no it wasn't it was not one yet no it wasn't and i'm just
sitting there you know because i focus on the the story of the of the game cumulative right
and i'm just sitting there like if the sharks fucking tie it i'm not making video
i just don't make me do it please don't make me do this right and it's okay we did it didn't come
what did you think about how how high pitched was your scream collectively both of you because both
of you can screech um when mitch marner passed the puck there were two the blue line yeah yeah
to michael bunting and it missed like what what was the what was the feeling that you had so there
was willie driving the net and passing it that was a why there was mitch passing it to mike
which was and i can reenact it why do you see the difference how i went up a little bit
and then there was mitch missing the open net which was no so it was two y's and a no it was
a medium y well no it was uh i'd say it's a nine and a half out of ten and then a ten out of ten
and then a uh and then a no it wasn't even missing the net he hit the post
no but then so close he scored which was
yeah just the sigh of relief there wasn't even a cheer it's like oh i'm just exhausted just
if i'm keith i'm a little upset at the way the team plays when it's one one and you're trying
to just get a point for a guy no you i i feel like in november head coaches across all professional
sports have sticks up their butts yes they do they're they're they have giant sticks up their
buds whether it's a hockey stick or any other broom i don't need the visual do you want me to
keep holding my hand like this can you please up the butt how would you put it there it's right
there i'd like to know long hand swing it back right in all right so it's there we've all
established it's there listen okay visualize it okay stick up the butt yeah keep holding your
hand out like you're the statue of liberty yeah there you go maybe that's what the statue of
liberty is all about in the first place oh yeah maybe that's why france sent it over that's right
they're like hey this is going to be a great prank 300 years in the making anyway sorry so
they all have sticks up their butts and i can see head coaches being like you guys it's not about
that it's about winning the game so i don't know i'd like to know how sheldon keith truly feels
about things like this because we mentioned it with this with the street with the streak sorry
are you okay coffee makes my voice flummy well we know with the streaks they hate it so i wonder if
this is something where they're also cheese makes his butt farty did you know that because i lack a
little toast that's right same so what were you gonna say well you guys have dogs yeah yeah too
many actually they drive you nuts right yep and then what do you do you love them you pet it you
pet it yeah i think that's what the young guys are to sheldon in november you oh you rascally
little scamps ah come here then he gives them a little pat on the head and a treat right i think
i think sheldon's got to be happy for him like i remember when yeah i remember when uh matthew
scored his 40th goal uh or was his 40th goal or he beat wendell clark's record one of the two
uh in his in his rookie year uh because he did get 40 in his rookie year but there was a
i vaguely remember i just i just remember the smile on mike babcock's face a guy who does not
like stuff like that doesn't care doesn't want to know but he was happy for him and you could tell
like there was like a genuine sort of uh appreciation for what matthews had come in and
done i think that coaches still are just like players just like commentators and podcasters
are all still fans at the end of the day and it's cool to see shit like that happen it really is
it was it was great because it honored the the pact you make with fans when they enter the
building when they purchase a ticket or when they're given a ticket and they walk in that
building what is the guarantee entertainment entertainment you're not you're not guaranteed
a win no loss even goals no you're not entertain me that's the only thing i want and the entire
building i'm sitting at home like secure the two points until the leafs got the puck and then
immediately i'm like just give it to mitch just give it to me please give it to mitch give it to
mitch give it to mitch give it to mitch and if he has to pass it you pass it to one more guy and
then that guy has to give it to mitch that's right give it to mitch you got to get him a point get it
give it to mitch every single person in that building forget a win all they wanted to see
was him get that street yeah and it's funny when leafs break records like matthew's four goals or
the point goal or whatever uh usually they lose usually when something good happens like like
statistically for a player usually the leafs are losing that game for sure at least just because
the leafs have been dog shit for a long long time um and this is just something that happened but
the leafs actually won that game too so mitch martin got his thing like imagine they lose that
game but mitch continues to streak then it's like well maybe we're focused too much you imagine
too much on the streak and not enough on the team play mitch he's super selfish which he's not by
the way but you know that's connor mcdavid somebody's gonna is connor mcdavid selfish
no you see that it was a stan fishler tweet oh oh i don't know who that is
is um uh he's your grandfather's sports writer from montreal i believe right montreal writer
does that uh no i think you're thinking of someone else okay uh well stan anyway was
sort of like i think he called connor mcdavid selfish and he said that uh people in edmonton
are getting are getting tired of his attitude okay because he and everybody was like i don't
know about that he's too good i consider edmonton at rangers a huge litmus test for both teams
my buddy sean
so he's a so he's a
my buddy sean believes the blue shirts will blow it i think not we'll see if the great connor
is the real mcdavid or as some in alberta have whispered mcselfish i still say crider should
be captain what that's such that's such a collection of thoughts what a cornucopia
who is he right for uh he writes for himself now he's got his own uh fishler report he's got his
own website uh but he he's an islanders guy i don't i didn't get my buddy sean my buddy sean
he um i think he wrote an entire column in that one tweet oh you know there's like five different
topics that he's oh yeah so you know the thing is is that them winning has prevented the stupid
storylines coming out which are um you know which are well the leafs focus too much on
on his streak and not enough on winning games which by the way aren't they 16 5 and 5 or
something like that they are so if you were making that argument it'd be a hard one to make
they're stupendous they are isn't that frustrating the second hottest second hottest team in the
atlantic division this is what was so frustrating about it the early of the season you knew they
were capable of this the whole damn time i did i said they're capable of this and i'm mad because
they're not performing like this and then you know who knew they were going to get all-star
goaltending from matt murray and ilya samsonov of goalies that have played i believe over 10 games
they're like fourth and sixth and save percentage in the nhl yeah it's crazy it's well yeah but
i'm just so mad they're winning who's mad they're winning i am why it is bad it's
because i need the clicks steve steve needs it for the channel i'm just so mad i don't get the
clicks are people accusing you of this why do you do it you've brought this up for years
for years you've been talking about how people think you think you think the leaf should lose
all the time because you get more clicks when they lose i'm so mad that the team i've cheered
for my entire life is 15 five and five oh i'm oh i'm just oh they really get my goat when they
win all the time oh fuck off shut up let me enjoy my hockey if i might recommend not taking the
not being online seriously yeah just or again change your uh change your replies to people
that you follow no easier no i must subject myself to this no because then you can choose
when you see your replies and that's the key kind of say twitter is uh exponentially worse than it
was several days ago why because my timeline used to be people i follow and now it's almost
exclusively the tweets the people i follow click like on yes i can't stand that they tried this
a while ago and i think what they've done is they've attempted it again the website yeah it's
what it's what instagram tried to do like six months ago remember when you're on instagram
and it was like uh do you want to follow this and it's a it was a bunch of posts from people
you don't follow yeah yeah i didn't want to see the things that my uh the people i follow click
like on before and now they're like how about 10 times more often jesse i've sent you a clip
and i'm hoping you'll play it okay uh because i think it's really really important that um
that we that we hit this okay yeah uh and you know is it a video it is a video clip it's a
video clip of you oh no yes and i tweeted this out last night it got a lot of response and i think
fucker the entire audience needs to be a part of this this is this is uh steve dangle this is steve
dangle to my left and what you must ask yourself is is steve dangle a coward is he a coward maybe
he does only want the leafs to lose you know you know what are you yosemite sam here
Nick Barden asked Steve a question in his most recent LFR,
which I think bears repeating.
Jesse, go ahead and play it whenever you'd like.
Nick Barden, 19-game point streak for Mitch Marner,
and you wear this for an LFR.
Deal?
And it's the Leafs' Aaron Andrews collection pajamas
that basically the Leafs' version of what Adam wore on the podcast,
but for the Devils.
nick absolutely not not a chance no i'd rather eat a bell pepper i well i don't know i've been
doing my glute bridges though no no no stop that maybe no dude they play saturday they're not even
gonna arrive in time and also no i remember how i felt when adam put that on and i don't want to
inflict that feeling on anyone else also it looks it looks like the one that nick sent you is not
the crop top version which i got so there's a long shirt and a crop top and i got the crop top
because i'm a man right so you're not going to wear it if i find out you fucking bought this
thing and it's next to you somewhere that's a thousand percent what's gonna happen where is it
that is something adam would do where is it thank you for giving me a great idea
No, you can't do it now.
Now we expect it.
I'll do it, but I'm going to wear really tight underwear.
Because I was worried for you the whole show.
Don't do it.
Thank you.
Please don't do it.
Okay.
No?
Why?
What's the matter?
Don't do it.
It's a fun idea.
Don't.
What?
Now who's the coward?
Should Jesse wear it?
No.
Don't do it.
No?
see when jesse says no people respect it also not me i just get bullied he'd pull it off
yeah that would be a problem for me i'd be like hey come on now uh it just sort of be a nice
outfit no you pulled it off in a different way adam oh okay you know i just you said you're a
medium are you gonna do anything that can i talk about that for a second yeah so i made when i did
the devil's thing i said i i'm usually a medium but this came in a little small right that was a
good joke it was a joke and people people were like i hate to tell you bud but you've never been
a medium and i'm like thanks that's not true a lot of those people were also in on the joke
like i think they were being they were joking back no no some people didn't get it and some
people were joking yeah yeah it's true i'll wear it if you want me to okay i think you should do
something i'm just letting you know i'm far hairier than adam and it's gonna be a problem
do you have anything that is uh remotely scantily clad that is least branded no uh
like undies anything no i got i got my uh i got a leafs jersey from when i was six
that has some stretch to it and still fits maybe you should wear that yeah if we're here monday
and mitch marner did his point streak i want you to wear that jersey for the whole fucking show
sure if you want to you don't have to do it for the whole show if you don't want to but
you've worn an lfr before yeah yeah because i saw i think one of your old youtube shorts came up
on on my feed and you were wearing that and you you were screaming i don't know though i'm i'm
down in weight but i'm up in gains so who knows i think that's it i think it's the child's leaf
i like that a lot and i'll wear hockey underwear in a job you know what so i'm looking for it
currently but i do have a child's new jersey devils jersey because my first jersey as a as
a kid was doug gilmore on new jersey well i'm not wearing that i don't wear uh jerseys for
teams who lose oh thank god they lost not anymore do that they did lose to toronto maple
yeah well it's you know listen our goalie cheated his way to the top what do you think
So are you wearing that on Saturday's LFR if he scores?
And then also the podcast on Monday?
No, I want to make you uncomfortable.
I'll wear it here.
No, I want both.
Shit.
You got to wear the LFR.
Wait, okay.
What is his tweet?
19 game point streak for Mitch Marner and you wear this for an LFR.
That's what Nick asked.
Shit.
Fine.
Fine.
I'll do it.
Yeah, that'll be...
You got to do something for celebration.
Yeah.
this is an LFR thing square in the throat so are you gonna hold on you're gonna wear it for the
LFR and this show yeah listen what am I getting bulleted to you let me know both I think he's
gotta do both yeah fine yeah you fine I'll rip my childhood Leafs jersey if he scores which he's
going to yeah I could always just who's on your childhood Leafs jersey uh so there's uh 93 and
no nameplate oh oh okay yeah was it real well yeah so I was like oh it's a fake and then an
abundance of people are like no that's just how they used to sell jerseys which i don't remember
at all why did they do that i don't know i don't know cost measures like i don't know i got this
thing when i was five or six wow yeah and i wore it for picture day until like the third grade
picture day yeah picture i was i was leaf jersey for picture day at least once incredible i think
more than once all right well listen congratulations to mitch marner obviously we've got tampa bay
tomorrow night uh and i do want to mention as a follow-up steven stamkos did in fact record
his 1000th point but he didn't do what i said he ought to do yeah he did it with an assist boo
uh so it could have been 945 uh 495 505 how many points he got a thousand he's got a thousand he's
got a thing is no no but this season this season 28 he's got 28 how many on the power play power
play points 12 it's less than half what why what it's just a lot for a power play specialist
you listen that is one of my coldest takes and i own it if you don't watch dude explain the take
he looked explain what you said at the beginning of last year so it was it was the midway was it
because there was the stanley cup that was really inspiring during the uh the bubble where he
stepped on the ice scored a goal had to leave uh and then i think the next run that they went on
he was injured again and i'm like man this guy like he he's like outside of the power play he
was like a third liner non-factor kind of guy but he was scoring on the power play yes adam's take
at the time was perfectly logical to the point where i was like i was like you know what i kind
of i'm on board with it a little bit and then and then uh and then he's steven stamkos and he's a
mutant and came back and was fully healthy the next year as if nothing had happened well and
no no no he was better better he's yeah has the best season of his career 106 points like the
next year scoring one up league wide which you know doesn't mean poof goalies are bad it means
the league is playing a little differently yeah and it suited a lot of offensive players games
and it suited his just fine yeah and like listen most players as they get older as they recover
from huge injuries don't get better that's right i was like you know what adam might have a point
and then uh you have it turns out you were wrong can steven stamkos play hockey anymore or is he
just there for the power play whoa do you see steven stamkos much other than the power play
oh it was right it was right it was right it was right by the way can i just say
i hate the zoom episodes why why what the fuck because i love you guys and well we love you too
okay okay no he was playing no let's i got the stats right here let's hear your take oh this is
this is from eraser uh one it doesn't okay july 8th 2021 so it would have been the bubble uh not
i was standing in this room over here that's where i used to podcast in here oh wow oh there
there was nothing on the wall no here we go adam wild july 8th 2021 can steven stamkos play hockey
anymore or is he just there for the power play whoa do you see steven stamkos much other than
the power play you didn't he okay is he hurt like i'm not i'm not asking in a in a way that's like
fuck steven stamkos i'm serious like is he is that why they have him out he must be hurt he's
i don't know if this is a weird way of putting it i mean he still obviously got it and is shot
as a weapon but like he almost doesn't like fit the lightning does that make sense yes it did
why i wanted to that's why i wanted to talk about it because what i think is interesting
i still think they have to make a move this offseason right oh stop it stop it no way
when I saw him play
for the $9 million
he takes up
are the lightning five on five
that hurt by
Stamkos not being there. I said lightning
five on five.
I haven't
like been on the lookout for
bad Stephen Stamkos place. I haven't really
noticed it. No, I want you to be on the lookout
for any Stephen Stamkos play.
So here's where he wasn't
you know, I love me some stammer
but here's where adam has a bit of a point first of all this dude has 18 points in 22 games that's
so funny i know it's almost point a game i know he's aware how many of those are not on the
playoffs i am often surprised by how often i'm watching the game and i go oh steven stamp goes
all right you know what i mean for a second okay we got we got the 23 games he played
eight goals four on the sorry five on the power play 12 points on the power play listen did he
get it done in the playoffs that year for sure they won on the power play they won the yeah but
he it's like it was like okay you know how leon dry sidle helped the oilers get to the western
conference final while not moving yes yeah stamkos on one leg did what he had to do and they adjusted
like tampa's brilliant man and john cooper's brilliant and they're like all right here's what
he can do here's how to best use him and then the next year he comes back and he's a little healthier
it reminds me of the argument that like is this team good or do they just have great goaltending
well that's a part of your team that's a part of your play as well is steven stamp stamp goes
really good or is he just good on the power play he's allowed to play on the power play and get a
staying power dude they lost a whole line and it and it was a line that was a big part of their
championship and so we were looking at ways to reconfigure how do you keep the cap situation
well how do you keep the team together or do you simply change direction yeah and adam's like all
right you won two cups let's change direction now which and they were like how about no i'll
i will try to get a third and potentially there's a reason within what is it two games yeah yeah
there's a reason the two of you aren't gms yeah and like because there's a reason you are exactly
you guys looked at this team and you said let's destroy the band let's get rid of the lead singer
and start anew like that's not how they should write tampa bay lightning should be looking at
this at all look at all of the weapons they had why would they blow it up and get rid of steven
stamko the lightning looked at it that way engraved inside their stanley cup rings for that very
playoff run is last day
of school yeah because they lost like
four guys but they the
main guys they never
moved out
I just oh looks like you got an
email nobody can hear that oh damn
it's such a nice sound though
anyway listen
I don't know why we're defending a take that was wrong
right but
I at the time I was
right at the time doubling down I
questioned you guys I just want to
I need my kudos here
kudos jesse i love this time capsule oh i have it's awful dark days man like i have my i'm sad
beard um adams in his in this room with no uh soundproof foam and jesse has a jersey for a
team that i believe was in the nba final at the time with the phoenix suns yeah it was cp3 and
uh 2021 yeah were they lost yeah yeah that would have been that year yeah because i that's a that's
a steve nash jersey yeah phoenix on steve man i think this was a time when you couldn't get
haircuts because my head is my fucking hair is my hair look what jersey's in my shadow box
the habs no you see we're doing the watch a habs game i was i was doing uh watch the cup final
that's when you became a traitor right that's when i became a traitor and uh um that beard
convinced me to uh go on drugs i have to tell you there have been people and who've been super kind
and messaged and said yo you know you guys got me through the pandemic i have to be honest
this show got me through the pandemic yeah it was those those at home episodes i was so glad to do
them but holy shit they were really really hard especially what was going on it was just a
a depressing year and a half man are so glad that's over our pre-show like banter is like so
lively i know and i just i remember back then you just like you should be like turn on your mic
you're like hey guys how's everybody on yeah how's everyone still terrible yeah that's great
when was the the 2021 stanley cup awarded uh it was like july it was like late it was late it was
really late oh that was terrible too didn't get much of a summer didn't get any fucking yeah that
was it was not a it was not a great time no not a great time oh july 7th so this would have been
like did they so this was the clip was posted july 8th so it might have been uh
so it might have been like the day they were up 3-1 or something you had this take it's a good
take my takes are always well time you're lucky i didn't put on my skimpy steven stamco's pajamas
okay aaron andrews collection that's good shit oh well that's good time listen if we were right
all the time it'd be boring that's very true if we were right ever it would be boring that too
uh speaking of which uh shall we get into you can bet that with dave sure sports interaction
Canada's Sportsbook presents
You Can Bet That with David
Bastl. Must be 19+. Please
play responsibly, Ontario only.
Who's ready for their way-too-early, outright
Stanley Cup winner bet?
Oh, let's go! Who's winning the cup
this year, Dave?
Grand Rapids Griffiths.
Yeah, apparently the
Avalanche. Apparently the Avalanche.
You know what? It's
something every book does. You regrade
all your futures, your props,
everything like that. And of course,
a lot different than what we saw in the preseason, right?
Because you look at some of the quality teams,
the Devils, the Stars, the Vegas Golden Knights,
they weren't part of the top five, top 10,
and now they are.
And see you later, Rangers.
The Predators have dropped.
The Capitals have really, really plummeted.
So it's just grating.
And I just thought I'd throw this out to you guys
because we're about 20 games in, 25 with some teams.
And now you're starting to get a little better look
at the crystal ball, so to speak.
If you had to pick one team right now
who's winning, go.
Jets?
I still...
Of course, the Jets.
Connor Hellebutt gets hurt.
Dave Riddick goes all the way to win the cons.
That's right.
He wins the cons.
That's lofty.
I like that.
I thought you were going to go the other way
with that one.
The Avalanche are imperfect,
and so I think they're going to do
what all championship quality teams do
and get pissed off about it.
So give me the abs for now.
Jesse, what about you?
The New York Rangers.
It is time for you to get that value on a team that is going through a little bit of a dry spell
and is going to pick it up and show who they truly are.
Teams of December and how they play is not true of teams of June.
They will be different.
I will be a coward and change my answer.
Give me the Dallas Stars.
Guys, it's going to make me really unpopular.
But if I had to choose right now, it'd be the Boston Bruins.
wow kick the first place team sports interaction.com slash sdpn check it out right now
dave thank you so much alex formington did not sign in ottawa uh not uh he will not be eligible
to play uh this season this was uh with with the leafs and william nylander uh a few years ago this
was it went down to the wire yeah it was it went down last hour it was like worst nightmare
territory um alex formington though is obviously a bit different we don't even know if a contract
was offered in this case um notably he is a member of the 2018 uh team canada world juniors team
yeah um he has said nothing about the events that occurred one way or the other so most players
issued a statement he didn't he did not interesting yeah so um we're not sure there's been very little
about this it's even Ottawa fans are like we don't know well dude like okay he just turned 23
played 79 games last year 18 goals 14 assists 32 points yeah he was a minus 13 like I know there's
warts to his game he's a young player with a lot of promise he's probably one of the fastest players
in the league didn't even get signed what weren't even able to trade him for I believe the Sens
were asking for a second round pick which yeah usually I mean the Sens were able to get a second
round pick for connor brown and he's significantly older guy was drafted in 2012 why can't they move
this guy why wouldn't they sign this guy we're just he just wasn't signed and we're gonna leave
it alone i that's it i think we sort of have to suppose we're done right now that's wild it is
that's wild and i think the reason on a canadian team the reason that more isn't being made of it
is because you know there are rumors circulating and um it doesn't mean that he necessarily was
associated with it but there are rumors circulating and teams want nothing to do with this and uh
media doesn't want to talk about it because it's an extremely uncomfortable topic uh but
drake batherson was on that team too yes elliot freeman said something interesting on the radio
the other day when i think he's talking with merrick about uh this situation and he said that
they were we're not expecting the reports from the nhl and the nhlpa on what happened uh at the 2018
uh event uh hockey canada event they're not expecting the reports to be released
like immediately but it sounds like the reports have been mostly completed okay and they are
waiting on they don't want to make any decisions before the police investigations are done because
london police is still investigating and the nhl doesn't have a timeline on that report being and
that's the right thing or if there's charges coming out so they don't want to jump the the
gun on their report and then there's a police report that follows so this thing is just a bomb
ready to go off they might be they might have the report just sitting on a desk in a file cabinet or
whatever just waiting for it to be released but they need police information first so let's kind
to wait and see unfortunately that's wild wild it's crazy um decent young player on a canadian
team doesn't even get a contract and we're all just like okay and moving on i don't think we're
all just like okay i think everybody kind of knows the situation yeah i think you're right i don't
think we're sitting here being like okay if you're if you were general manager we're not we can read
between the the the lines even if your general manager if that question even exists it's sort
of just like yeah well i guess we're not doing this this year until we know more and i think
that's the prudent thing to do there's gonna be some wild stories at the end of this um i also
want to mention this rick west had just before this show actually started hockey basically he
did a um an investigation about a year and a half ago and people forget about this because of all
the other investigations he's done um hockey canada uh officials released how many discrimination
related offensives occurred uh last season in a 16 page report released today hockey canada said
under 18 leagues were responsible for 55 of all discrimination penalties in 2021-22 hockey canada
said 61 of such penalties were related to sexual orientation or gender identity slurs 18 to race
99% of discrimination penalties were assessed to males. Of those allegations, 37% were considered
unsubstantiated, 18% led to suspensions, 17% resulted in written warnings. A breakdown of the
21-22 discrimination penalties by Hockey Canada and its jurisdictions, 152 were issued in the
Ontario Hockey Federation, 81 in Alberta, 71 in Eastern Ontario, Hockey Eastern Ontario,
uh 55 in bc hockey and 51 in hockey quebec so uh just a couple of other
what is it with people on their friday news dumps eh i don't know well i mean you are
probably release news on friday but yeah at least at least they did it in the morning it
wasn't friday at 4 p.m right um yeah sometimes news just falls on a friday can i can i take a
silver lining from that i mean which is that they're releasing it well because that was the
part of the reason that rick needed to do that investigation yeah they weren't being up front
about it right um so they it was released that's positive um this is under 18 right so we're
talking about kids right and in these organizations uh this is where you teach right you should
probably know earlier than that not to say those things that you know kids make mistakes bad
mistakes extremely bad mistakes and these mistakes need to be punished they are is that a positive i
mean i think they're starting to be yeah because i think a lot of people would look at the numbers
of those that were investigated and go that's awfully low uh probably that led to suspensions
so i think there's obviously work to be done but you're right i think when we talk about progress
is always slow the fact that this report was released at all which is something that was
suppressed in the past is is a win and listen it's a low bar i get it yeah it's a low bar uh
you know anytime that happens uh in a game or in life it's bad i hope that doesn't need to be said
but there it is they're identifying it they're punishing it they're teaching i hope that's a
good thing absolutely um so we had to cover those stories another one i wanted to talk about was uh
uh pat maroon and jack edwards um jesse i sent you the clip here and i believe for news reasons
we can run this call yeah we can run the audio we can run the audio here we have not had the
chance to talk about this no it broke i believe right after it became like a real story after
our last episode it happened tuesday night and then we recorded wednesday morning but
hadn't caught it so if for those of you that don't know jack edwards is a long time
Bruins
broadcaster
for Nesson, I think. Is it
Nesson? Nesson.
One of the things that
Leaf fans don't have is we don't actually have a local
broadcast, so we don't know. We've
sort of forgotten what it's like to have a homer call
the games. We used to have that. Joe Bowen was amazing
at it. He still does the radio. Yeah, and
localized homer broadcasting,
to me, there's nothing wrong with it.
If you're broadcasting to fans
of a particular city, then you should be
pro that team, and that's fun.
National games, you want to be as even as possible.
All Leafs games in Canada, essentially, are national.
So, unfortunately, we're stuck with,
oh, wait, we got to pretend not to like the Leafs here.
But Adam Wilde gives Steve Dangle credit on Saturday nights.
Watch a Leafs game with Steve Dangle is our local broadcast.
That's right.
That's a good point, Jesse.
That's what I consider our local broadcast.
Good point.
It happens on YouTube, but it's still broadcast.
Except this Saturday, because we're doing Habs.
What are you freaking laughing at?
We're doing Habs Oilers.
Are the Leafs playing Saturday?
They are.
And what game are you doing?
The national game.
Okay.
Which is the Habs versus the Oilers.
But the Leafs are playing.
Yes.
And you're doing...
It's called Watch Hockey Night in Canada with Steve Dangle.
Adam.
And the Leafs are playing on Hockey Night in Canada.
No.
They're playing on a regional broadcast.
Well, yeah.
Which will feed into Hockey Night in Canada.
Okay.
Anyway, so getting back to Jack Edwards.
Getting back to Jack Edwards.
Speaking of questionable decision making
I want to know
What you guys think of this clip
Because this guy is known for like
Being obtuse
It's not what we think about it
What do we think about this clip
Just play the clip
Listed at 238 pounds
That was day one
Of training camp
I got a feeling he's
Had a few more pieces
Between then and now
Yeah, that's before pregame.
Right.
Fasting.
Inadvertent fasting for Pac Maroon is like four hours without a meal.
But, hey, three cups in a row.
Who can argue with this formula?
Inadvertent?
Did he say inadvertent fasting?
like he accidentally passed by not eating so that's not i'm sorry i was laughing before you
played this clip that's not even like close to the wildest thing jack edwards has said no mike
no and i'm laughing at the headline from joe yurden 10 years ago on nbc sports
video jack edwards compares matt cook to sirhan sirhan apologizes
who's sirhan sirhan yeah who is sirhan i don't know i don't know i used i knew when the story
broke sirhan sirhan uh let me look it up uh from wikipedia sirhan sirhan um is a palestinian
jordanian man who was convicted for the assassination of robert f kennedy wow oh
so jfk's brother the guy who killed jfk no his brother no robert robert was running for president
and somebody started with the j so so jfk obviously was shot and then robert was shot
during his initial presidential thing in a crowd he's walking through a crowd guy came up and shot
ah i remember that from forrest gump no that was jfk no i think i think they did both did they do
both okay well it's been a while i think we're missing the point of the force force was like
that and then they shot his brother yeah i can't do it forrest gump so i didn't can you do it for
me why'd you look at me you're good at fucking i don't remember that then they shot his brother
yeah because he was talking about jfk to jenny he's calling him a nice man that nice man yeah
and they shot his brother i think i think that's how it happened maybe but what happened with you
know pat maroon is a husky man they call him big rig for a reason yeah uh but he's also a
professional athlete and let's be straight jack edwards is from a different generation where uh
you you just commenting on someone's weight for no reason other than you're skinny and they're
bigger than you it seems to be you know that was totally cool back in the day like if you should
you should have heard my grandparents generation talk about other people's weight you know here
she's putting on weight there you know hey he's really he's eating well you know those
kinds of comments those used to be very acceptable that dude who grabbed your stomach
yes a fan of this show we were in we were doing a promotion for beer do you guys remember that
calling wood calling wood yeah and a guy came up to me at the bar he's like you really packed
him on and grabbed my stomach oh god yeah he said no he's working 14 fucking hours a date like i
still am but i was i was working breakfast television this podcast kiss 92.5 and then
another show and he's like you you put on weight i'm like fucking right i've put on weight you
asshole he said he said uh he's like love the show or whatever but this has got to go and he
that's what he said that's what it was and before i hope i don't know i feel bad if he's listening
because he vehemently apologized i remember did he yes oh you don't remember i remember you were
like ah it's fine it was it's fine i survived it right i've already forgotten about it but i think
what's but i think you know you have to realize that you know there's just no need for it so what
i love that pat maroon did here is you know he said it was uncalled for unnecessary i said but
i don't understand why he did that but it is what it is it's over it's done and we turned a negative
into a positive so what he did was he donated two thousand dollars to i believe a charity
associated with the tampa bay lightning um and they raised uh it's it's tampa bay thrives a
non-profit organization assisting those struggling with mental health and substance use issues
uh by providing navigation access and awareness ended up raising over fifty thousand dollars
in tampa bay which i think is really cool so pat maroon who by the way negative to a positive
You don't need an excuse to donate that.
Has an ill word ever been spoken about Pat Maroon?
Everybody loves that guy.
Yes, Drew Doughty said he sucked at hockey.
And then Maroon won three cups.
Which is more than two.
More than Doughty's.
Which is more than zero, before you make the joke.
He's got more cups than Doughty has teeth.
Damn, probably.
I think this is a great time to talk about a show on our network called Agent Provocateur.
Why is that?
adam do you not remember who you talked to yan ruda and what did yan ruda say
oh about pat maroon about patty maroon oh yeah because they were teammates in tampa he we we
were i was talking about who partied the most do you have the clip i i just have the clip in front
of you have it who was the life of the party on the team after the stanley cup stuff not to go
with paddy maroon you know uh he he's always the loudest he was always the loudest guy in the room
so i would probably go with him i think certain guys that uh had peaks in different moments you
know everybody everybody saw a coach at the press conference you know then uh i think uh one day
yanni guard was uh just like he used like a skateboard and he was just like going crazy
like hot naked like on like on one of the one of the one of the events you know some some guys
would like you know push push their peak but uh i would probably go with patty just by the way yan
ruda uh surprisingly funny like i i wasn't i wasn't sure what we were expecting with yan but
he's he's awesome and you're like shack i wasn't i wasn't aware of your game i'm sorry i want to
apologize i wasn't aware of your game no i mean obviously we've watched a lot of yan ruda hockey
especially in the playoffs but i'm i'm uh yeah i uh you know this is a guy that was like playing
czech league 2 when he was 23 when you're supposed to be breaking in and then you know
five years later he signs his first contract with the blackhawks like he broke it at 27
wow yeah and he kind of goes through like in the interview he kind of goes through like
what happened and that first year in chicago and he's like talked about an elevator and he's like
there are guys in the team that go on the elevator first and then you go say he's like
sometimes you on the bus there are people they have their spots and then you want to avoid you
know yeah and then and then you know and and you could tell that like when he moves to tampa
because they traded for him that that he didn't have any stories like that which i thought was
interesting uh and also you know just how much fun it was and how great it is and you know he's
just coming to pittsburgh and that sort of thing so it's it's fascinating um anyway uh big shout
it to to pat maroon and to yan ruda and agent provocateur you should check it out i did like
this comment from somebody alan's clients all seem to be nice people uh and they all genuinely
appreciate and like alan too he seems like a great guy to be your advocate i was like yeah this is
what i'm trying to say we have three of his clients at uh our little party in montreal and
they were all just hello david how nice was david juracek and his entire family his dad was so cool
we hung with his dad yeah just very nice hello i'm david juracek's dad very proud of him
How are you?
Oh, man.
Okay, so.
I am also huge.
Yeah, yes, he was.
Six-four.
Jake Markstrom.
Sorry, short.
The comment going around Hockey Twitter right now, quote, I just suck at hockey right now.
I'm going to read you the full quote, though.
I just suck at hockey right now.
We're playing good hockey and not letting many scoring chances in, but we can't start from behind every game.
The guys did a great job, and once again, I've got to be better.
I suck right now, so I've got to step up.
jake markstrom has ruined so many fantasy teams uh this year jesse comment what what happened
what is happening because like i'm wondering a little bit here if this is a brobrovsky where
you're good one you're not the next but then good the next there's because he was not great
his first year in calgary outstanding last year outstanding and then this year it's like
it's dan vladar and nobody the stats are crazy by the way i think it's the most mental position
in the sport by far and maybe we can use this to piggyback on to uh the jack campbell stewart
skinner thing yeah i think we should because both both alberta teams it's pretty clear their
backup has given them better goaltending than their starter yep um in edmonton i mean they're
basically equal in starts and not even close in numbers skinner's a 914 campbell's an 872
and near identical records it's bizarre and the other night on back-to-back stewart's
gonna got the first game which is usually for your lead starter not always not always but often
often and uh i just want to let you know that he's played 17 games this year he's already
allowed in almost 50 goals who's that markstrom markstrom yeah 49 and here's where i'm at um
based on dang it's it should be 47 if my memory serves me correct dude markstrom i think most
goalies i think most people do well at the thing they're best at and if goalies simply stuck to
being that goalies they'd be fine uh this dude like i feel bad because he's obviously beating
himself up like look at the he's almost at the blue line yeah so yeah i was waiting for you to
get there okay so let's let's say oh so he made a miscalculation let's say he successfully poke
check this puck and then what then hopefully your teammate gets it because you're 30 feet out of the
net so explain last night the first goal first of all calgary lost 2-1 so this goal ended up
mattering a lot yeah first first goal two goals it's a good game oh yeah usually well and it's a
decent game so markstrom goes out to play a puck that slivkovsky is coming and getting and he
decides to go all the way out past the circle to try and poke this puck it's a ridiculous play and
in the post game in those comments where um he says that he sucks he admits that this wasn't a
bad play i don't have the quote here he says i think everybody saw what happened and it's not
a good play i just suck at hockey right now oh it's entirely mental yes the skill is there i
assume markstrom can tend the goal but the this type of decision making is kind of a microcosm
of that hey you don't have it mentally right now and you don't know how to just play solid
goaltending it's all in his head i think that like you gotta that's that's a rookie coming at you
he's not gonna have a lot of runway to like get a decent shot off i think you can come out you can
be aggressive but that's a bizarre calculation and that's like the second time in recent memory
uh he's left his net and cost his team the first goal in like the first 30 seconds the the first
one i can remember i it might have been an elimination game i can't remember but it was
against the oilers and it's like that's conor mcdavid yeah you can't do that oh and okay now
it's all coming back to me he did it again if i'm not mistaken in the flames first game against
the oilers this year and which if i'm his if i'm daryl sutter if i'm his teammates if i'm the fans
i'm i'm tearing my hair out i'm begging you to identify 97 on the ice he's the if you can't see
him clearly he's the blur he's the fastest player in the league anyway like what is that it's so
the guy who grabs the puck after him i don't remember who ended up scoring this goal i think
it's slavkoski no no he doesn't no slavkoski is the first guy yeah and i don't know who or no
slavkoski is the trailer it doesn't matter yeah it doesn't if you're gonna come challenge a player
like that you better cover that puck he has to take around goes in the net three flames there's
three flames trying i feel bad for him right now that's a funny visual no no it was a it was a
potential breakaway but you face the breakaway man yeah like look just stay in your net yeah
well and like angle them off you got a guy cutting off the pass it's one-on-one you're
jake markstrom take the one-on-one but he's not confident right right now so he doesn't want the
two-on-one you don't want you don't want a goalie who's who doesn't want to face pucks
which is what he is right now man shit steve that's prophetic he doesn't want really intense
to say that no you know what it's like you don't want a broadcaster who doesn't want to talk yeah
no you want you want a goalie who wants to face pucks you want a defenseman who's like
fucking bring it you you want a shooter who's like yeah give me the penalty shot with no time
left on the clock you know you you want confident players and he's very clearly not one right now
and translating over to edmonton i think you know leaf fans feel a little bit uh closer to
this situation just because we have a better relationship with jack gamble he was the goalie
here for a long time loved him and the we did love him and the thing that drove us the most nuts
about him is he was his worst critic oh yeah he was saying something because he played in toronto
yeah yeah yeah nothing oilers twitter can say about jack gamble is worse than the things jack
campbell says to himself so but oh go ahead go ahead sorry well no it's true and i wish
i wish it weren't that way i wish i think it's difficult man it's it's really difficult so much
of goaltending is you said this years ago and i've sort of never forgotten it and it's hilarious to
think about the names involved we started this show um right before the leafs traded ben scrivens
and a few other players for Jonathan Bernier and that trade broke my heart James Reimer had played
really great that year he had dragged a team that was horrendous possession wise outshot every game
but James had dragged them to the playoffs but because he had had a somewhat weak back half of
the seventh game Dave Nones decided well we have a goaltending problem in Toronto instead of we
have an entire team problem and this team is constructed poorly and I never should have bought
out grabovsky and i'm an idiot mike cormack back when he still worked for sports net made me
re-watch the third period of game seven why did he do that to you to get to talk to mike about to
get my retrospective reaction oh my god to it that's a good that's good content it is good
content that team should have finished last place oh they're terrible they were terrible team the
mike costco top line uh defenseman watching them made me go how the fuck did they get to the
playoffs let alone game seven how did they have a 4-1 lead yep you yeah it's crazy and when the
bruins locked it down like dude no one no one no goalie in the world i think would have dragged
them out of that hole it was because the season was 56 games yeah you just had a hot 48 oh 48
games you just had a team that was hot for a little bit and they they got their playoff spot
and slumped and they did not end the season strong and they did not start that series strong
And Reimer dragged them
Kicking and absolutely screaming
At the top of their lungs
Through games 5 and 6
Game 7 comes and everyone forgets what he did
Fair to say that if Calgary and Edmonton
Had goaltending that was consistently
Between 9-10 and 9-15
They're at 9-05
But I'm just saying 9-10 and 9-15
They're at the top of their division
Edmonton has that in one of their goalies
I was just going to bring that up
Because Stuart Skinner is a 9-14
oh yeah and uh i don't know what dan vladar is to be honest i could look at very good he's good
he's been really good lately um nine third yeah if he if he's not available in fantasy league
there's a reason um playing well yeah 9 13 there you go hey and and so they almost like those team
teams kind of are mimicking each other right now in terms of the issues and what's weird is both
teams continue to go with the guy that's more expensive that they really need to work out
rather than just playing the hot hand and letting the other guy sort it out because here's the thing
about nhl players oftentimes they sort it out if they've got the talent yeah they gotta get jack in
his happy place they gotta i don't know i brought up reimer by the way yeah scrivens put reimer in
his happy place i thought so and he played better with scrivens behind him sorry that was the point
of bringing that up and and and goaltending is such a mental game right and reimer i believe
struggled a little bit the next year because of the competition between bernie and bernie it was
tilted in bernie's favor anyway despite he didn't play very well uh he had a good first season
okay and that was the peak right or if you're if you're la in this situation you just send down
cal peterson who's making all the money and you just say hey figure it out in the ahl but i don't
think that's an option with markstrom and campbell there's man there's three goalies in that division
completely just in a holy shit fight with themselves okay bernie had a 923 save percentage
His first year in Toronto
Dude he was good
Holy shit
He was good
49 games
Oh my god
He was good
Dare I say
The better goalie
They should have
Made the playoffs
That's how bad
They were
Wow
Yeah that's how bad
They were
Wow that is so
Embarrassing for the Leafs
55 total
But 49 started
49 starts
Wow
49 starts
A 923
Team missed the playoffs
Insane
Retire
They were so
That was one of the
18 Wheeler years
Wasn't it
I think so.
They lost like the last 10 games or something.
We were looking at, Jesse, that was, I think that was the only season we've done where
you weren't here yet.
And I believe, if I remember correctly, in March, we were openly talking about a potential
Toronto-Montreal first round.
Oh, no.
And then Toronto just tanked.
It was, that's, I think that was that year.
They had a bunch of 18-wheeler years.
There was a Ron Wilson one and there was a Randy for sure.
I want to say there were one or two before they actually made it in 2013.
oh yeah and that oh and then there was one that you're oh man that's so wild sorry man it's crazy
i'm so glad i went back and looked at that the cal peterson one is in la so this is i wanted to
link all three yeah so cal peterson who by the way got an extension this summer for three years
at 15 million the first game he played on his new contract was in october
geez like and there's somebody tweeted out like the amount of goaltenders la has just given up
in the last few years i don't know what are the names what are the names uh just to name a few
jack well jack hamill um martin jones was really good when they when he was at la yeah uh oh man
yeah i need the list it was a really good list but there was some like martin jones maybe you
maybe you go okay we can we can live through that one but there's been some really good ones
And they didn't want to move off of Jonathan Quick's contract.
But then they sign Cal Peterson to this contract.
And now he is on waivers as of this week when he was.
He cleared.
Obviously.
So.
Yeah, he makes $5 million a year for this year, five next, six the following, and a $4 million signing bonus in the summer.
I don't understand this, though.
A lot of people are talking about what LA did because he had a terrible game.
And then they threw him on waivers the next day as like we're sending a message to Cal Peterson.
Is that how you do it?
no he he needs to go down and work on his game i think that's that's what they were they've seen
enough where it's like hey we need you to go work you're like we need you to get better if you want
to play at the nhl level and i think that's just what they've come to a conclusion you know and
and quick's brutal too no well it's been awful but you can't send them down for five years
off and on they ended up winning uh last night yeah i i think it's this one yeah it's this one
from 265 kilometers over that's the one yeah over the 2017-18 season the la kings wow had jonathan
quick darcy kemper scott wedgwood who was acquired for kemper what about wedgwood yeah what about
him i'm glad we're bringing it back to him um acquired for kemper jack campbell and cal peterson
in the organization they couldn't let go of quick's monstrous contract and slapped one on
peterson as soon as he was eligible oof here's the last five years of save percentage from
jonathan quick 888 904 898 910 889 this year 910 there you go there's something well they were a
better team last year i know dude they're still top 10 in the league oh for sure wild but it's
because their goaltending's been probably bottom five it reminds me uh but yeah steve but what i'm
saying is when you're paying jonathan quick that much money having one good season in five isn't
great no 5.8 million dollars for but how many it was a 12-year contract or something yeah he's on
a contract that's currently illegal uh and it ends the 10-year deal it ends this season wow
so man so the la kings remind me of what a little bit of what happened with toronto last year after
november although the the kings didn't get october november goaltending either after november the
Leafs had like 889 goaltending the rest of the way still managed to make it work if I'm if I'm
Rob Blake in the Kings I fucking cross all my fingers and toes and just hope that Jonathan
Quick gets it together because that's the answer here for them is that we can just get uh 2011
Jonathan Quick back 2012 Jonathan Quick back um and that he has a decent season a 905 and that
we can just ride that and Cal Peterson figures it out in the AHL and hopefully he can just be the
backup otherwise there's a lot of issues here if you've got to go out and go get a gold well so
the rumor was maybe potentially somebody was throwing it out there that that they might take
a run at thatcher demko if things continue to go south in vancouver right so you'd have three
that's the contract situation are you moving uh you can't move jonathan quiff you can't move
jonathan quick that's not an option you have you can't if his deal's expiring no there's no way you
move uh the guy who's been here his entire life at 36 in his last you gotta be ice cold at this
point if you're the kings because they could be a western conference finalist team they're that
good up front i wouldn't do that to a player as a gm and like i've experienced dealing with players
in these situations with a lot of extensive personalities on nhl 23 thank you and there's
no way i'm moving quick at this point so you wouldn't have it if somebody wanted cal pearson
and they would have taken him so how are you gonna how are you gonna fit a thatcher demco then that's
why i'm saying i think the option here is you you cross your fingers and toes and hope and the hope
jonathan quick gets it together so i don't know the king's injury situation throughout their
organization but i have follows out i know that i've well i'm in net oh yeah there you go um uh
so they had phoenix copley backing up jonathan quick last night 30 year old from north pole
alaska always love to say that about him um there's a place called north pole alaska didn't
know that was a thing um that is where santa lives you learn something kids so there's two
goalies on the ontario rain or who have played this season phoenix copley 9 13 and 11 games
but then there's this 23 year old matthew valalta in seven games he's in 9 27
and now their big money goalie who they signed for the next three years um is going to be taking
that guy's starts all right i thought you were going the other way do you think he's going to
start many games while cal peterson's down there somebody up probably shouldn't hold on yeah they
call it yeah he's the third goalie i don't know man that's oh that's such an interesting point
So if Quick continues to be bad, they're going to have to turn to Copley.
If he's bad, they'd probably call back Peterson and say,
hey, do you have your confidence?
I think maybe give the kid a shot.
We have a hot goalie in the miters, but we've just sat him for the last five games
so Cal Peterson can sort it out.
I don't know.
I don't know much about this guy, granted.
He's a third-round pick from 2017.
I was just looking at the situation and thought that was very interesting.
That is.
he played 46 games uh in the a last year had a 903 which is obviously not world beating so
if for the kings uh like i think you guys make a great point in that there's an opportunity here
with them and they can't waste it this season because the west looks a little weak especially
that division right now with how everybody's playing you can't squander a good team if if
edmonton makes the playoffs because they were out of the playoff picture for a minute there
I mean to me again
McDavid and Drysaddle what they did in the playoffs
Last year was so stupid
LA and Edmonton are gonna meet
I feel like LA, Edmonton
Colorado like those are the three
No
Vegas
Vegas is really good too and their goaltending was supposed to be
Terrible
Vegas is my pick to win the West right now
They look amazing
I thought their goaltending would be okay
I thought they were an injury away from terrible
But LA's got a shot right
Oh, yeah, that's the thing.
Everything's kind of wide open.
They have a shot to be in the Western Conference final.
So what I'm trying to say is, and I didn't articulate that properly,
but LA is, the one thing they can do, all those teams can score, right?
Those teams we mentioned.
So Colorado scores, Vegas scores a ton, Edmonton obviously scores a ton,
outscores every problem they've ever had.
They've won at least two games this season where they've been down 3-0.
Conor McDavid has how many points this year?
A million.
It's close to 50 already.
It's close to 50.
It's still $50,000.
And then like Leon Dreisaitl is right behind him.
It's like McDavid, Robertson, Dreisaitl.
McDavid's actually starting to pull away.
It's like, it's crazy.
So, but one thing LA can do
that the other teams cannot do is they can smother you.
And in the playoffs that works.
Phil Deneau, Anze Kopitar,
those guys can shut you down.
And I think that if they can figure out
this goaltending thing,
they're going to win a lot of 2-1 playoff games.
And that is going to be LA's specialty going in.
i think it's i like the kings a lot i love the way they're constructed they just got to figure
this shit out and if i were them if you can get thatcher demko get them they now sometimes when
there's smoke there's fire and you know either you have two bad goalies um or your team doesn't
play defense the best you know that's why calgary and edmonton are such interesting case studies
because edmonton does not have a good reputation when it comes to their defense steward skinners
put up great numbers yeah uh calgary does have a great reputation for their defense markstrom's put
up terrible numbers and vladar has been good yep uh la kind of sneakily hasn't been that great
in that department and they've made some mistakes they lost a 9-8 game uh to seattle the other day
which uh was the game that got peterson sent down and as uh frege pointed out in 32 thoughts
uh you know look at his reaction after every goal um i'd like to move on because we are running a
little short on time here can i just say i have a theory that goaltending is worse this year in
the nhl i think there's there's been enough evidence it's not that offense is up it's it's
i think it's both i think goaltending is worse because offense has gotten so good right now
we're in an era where i think thank god by the way yeah the goal era sucked man it was boring
yeah i'm not sure an abs a devil's fan and who was the other and sabers fan in the late 90s it
was terrible there's no red wings oh yeah well their goaltending was never the strength though
right this was good there's no nhl game worth turning off no they're all fun ever and they're
you know what no lead is safe i like that no lead you know what i enjoy the fact that other leaves
other teams blow leads now too not just the leaves but jesse you were saying no i i just think i
think this year we're seeing evidence that
offense is so good and goalies are
really struggling. And the goalie, I think the
goalie play across the league is taking a little bit of a dip.
Unless your name is Jake Ottinger or
Billy Huso. Yes, unless you are those two
gentlemen. Spectacular. Ilya Sorokin
or, let me squint at Jesse's screen,
Carter Hart.
Goal saved above expected. Top
three. Sorokin, Hart, Hellebuck.
And four?
Matt Murray. Karelva Malka.
Karelva Malka.
Ilya Simsonov, number
seven along along that line jesse about goaltending maybe potentially being worse
and go goal score or not being worse but goal scoring being up jason robertson is on pace for
75 goals this year it's stupid and and here's what's crazy he just passed austin matthews for
the most goals in in this calendar year yeah so he's got 53 matthews has 52 caprizov with 49 and
dry saddle with 47 he's gonna he got it under the wire it's december he's gonna get he's gonna get
he's gonna get the 2022 scoring champ i think this is it's such a fun thing it's a fun year
but matthews is on a goal streak yeah i think i my money's on robertson getting the trophy he's
it's i'm watching this like a hawk matthews has there has been a little bit of a it's
goals have been harder to find but he's been getting a lot of goals in tight yeah i've been
watching that yeah and like even the other night when bunting got on the puck again it's three feet
front of the net hollow well sorry the bunting one before that where he fought for it i guess
it was oh yeah but yeah the hollow well man steve my stamco's take was bad your hollow ball take
let's talk about that for a second i did not know he was this good he's great i didn't know he could
do this uh i also love that every time he does something good matthews goes over to him and
congratulates him directly it's amazing to see that remember he was with the team for the bubble
yeah he was a really popular guy i remember there's photos he wasn't a black ace though he
was like he was actually like i remember they had the taxi squad and that was all really confusing
but no there were pictures of him with he was hanging out with matthews and thornton and
that whole crew that's right he was like sitting on the plane with thornton yeah they're boys
like they uh that's cool they're i think like it's not just that he's playing well but the team
you can tell when they want a guy to succeed yeah they just give that little extra i who knows that's
a very interesting little wrinkle i did not think met a hollow well how much do we like that
hey it's been pretty good it's been adequate
it's they haven't lost but there are a few shifts from like oh back to jason robertson for a second
though unbelievable play and you know what's amazing he's not even the best robertson brother
shut up what doesn't play for the league so he can't shut up 23 22 goals sorry in 20 24 games
i 39 points so far the only here's what i do like about this matthews loves this shit
oh he's competitive yeah and i think something like that from mr jesse blake oh he scored 60
goals last season he's not even gonna get the 2022 scoring title i don't know i think that
stuff matters oh yeah i think it matters now to uh it's kind of crazy because like matthews is
way down he's 18th in scoring like in goal scoring right now in the nhl he's creeping up uh man
you're right mcdavid is pulling away uh he's got 19 goal that's so dumb that's so crazy like and
he's 43 points uh i think it's uh it goes yeah mcdavid robertson dry sidle kucherov mckinnon
in terms of points but the the gap between mckinnon and mcdavid which is first to fifth
is 10 points and didn't mckinnon have like a five point night i don't know i'm sure he did
um you can believe it tage thompson by the way number six and i want to show you something
um did you see this is just dimitri filipovich pulling one second of tage thompson tage thompson
might be the most skilled player in the entire league yeah what the since this is our hell so
since this is my episode to eat shit i'm eating shit on tage thompson i was wrong holy shit this
guy's unbelievable look at this play i just texted it to jesse he is quite literally you i think we
could probably play this on the show because it's a gift but uh no we can't oh my god this could be
so annoying place um but it's literally just him getting a puck off the boards and putting it
through his feet and then moving around a defenseman oh like butter and he's like 7 000
feet tall it's the empire state building literally handling a puck like he's five two i cannot think
of a player who has had a similar career trajectory i can't um the the only guy i could
think of was william carlson who was like a columbus blue jackets fourth line cast off
who went on to score 40 goals here's the thing though he didn't have the pedigree of tage thompson
where tage thompson was a first round pick and he also didn't continue to score 40 goals yeah in the
nhl year after year not that tage thompson has done it year after year but he's in the middle
of it oh yeah this is the one i thought you were gonna bring up yeah either this one or the other
one i just thought the other one on pk was oh that's a little stupid it's stupid so who's that
he scored on one thing that tage thompson uh worked on was created well for his body he wanted
to develop more lean muscle mass because of how tall he is he realized he has to build his body
in a different way he can't be like the stocky guys who are who are like six foot or or 5 11 or
whatever and you normally the way you build your hockey body so he's built this incredible uh his
stature where he's really tall but he plays like a small guy and it's been directly from his
conditioning the off season before he started scoring 40 goals in the league this is all credit
to this dude and the hard work that he's put in he's an unbelievable player he's giving me a star
for a long time he's so big that that i would think that finding space is hard because his limbs are
so big but he always finds space so he has to be like a dancer yeah just get around everything
really stealthily dude it's beautiful 2019 20 he barely played hockey like he must have been
injured he played 16 games with rochester had 12 points and he played one game with the sabers
that's it that ryan o'reilly trade coming in to uh really help the sabers out right when they
needed it to he played 41 games with the blues had nine points got traded buffalo 65 games 12 points
this just straight up wasn't there like well jesse said it right it's the it's the changing
the conditioning the work you put in it's amazing this is a bit aggressive though yeah um what's all
i gotta do is push-ups like but like dude to hold my hands like a triangle and then i is steve i
think there's a difference between you and tage i don't see it
um uh mike rubb tweeted this last night sportsnet tweeted this last night jordan bennington
Versus the Carolina Hurricanes
Hitting one of the
Stahl brothers
I'm gonna
Yeah there it is Jordan
And getting kind of
Rocked himself
Now it's nice to see
Jordan Bennington actually
Get hit like
Because most of the time he's just like whoa
He's like dancing
He got flattened by a dude who wasn't trying to
Flatten him
yeah well he does this on purpose look at him he's also huge that's the tall one jordan stall
uh when i actually i've i've met both gentlemen and i can tell you um there's a pretty big size
difference man he's got those farm boy popeye arms like the the kind of forearms that you can
only get from carrying bales of hay right uh he looks like gronk's james reimer jordan stall
and uh there's a i had to look it up last night there is a listed listed 48 pound weight difference
between the two wow i'm willing to bet it's more and it's such a huge difference that the fact that
bennington's wearing goalie pads probably doesn't even help him in fact it probably drags him down
to the ice far faster yeah there were so many guys in the carolina hurricanes bennington could
have done this too like if that's martin niches it's a different story yeah you know what i mean
but he picks the biggest guy he's huge he's a unit yeah if you if you play with shit long enough
sometimes you end up smelling like poo oh interesting and mr binnington i got a little
bit of his comeuppance uh what was the final i couldn't help but smile jesse i also want you to
screen grab this it's uh uh something that steve tweeted this morning from why it aren't uh about
jt miller and it's a gif uh but you'll see uh once the puck hits the blue line jt miller stops
skating so steve why did you retweet jt miller defending clips always slap because he doesn't
play defense no and like listen it's a small thing because the canucks had the power play
it's two on two he he could have helped make it two on three right if he just sort of hustled
back and everything and the canucks defense handled it fine and nothing happened it didn't
even result in a shot attempt but this dude refuses to he's like he's shocking he's last
season's uh uh shifley and wheeler he's shocking without the bug and he's put up a million points
do you okay if you're an acquiring team at eight million dollars a year no okay i don't
do you just leave them in vancouver you gotta pay me to take them jt miller yep jt miller
guy who gets what 90 points a year 80 points a year he gets 90 points wow sounds good keep him
why are you serious yeah well he gets 90 points why don't you want to keep him
well the canucks are poorly structured as we know it's more than jt miller why are they poorly
structured they have a guy who scores 90 points they have a lot of money on their back end they
probably wish they didn't you know well trading gt miller's not gonna help or hurt that problem
so you should probably just keep them man i'm not acquiring that fucking player well why it said
this is what drives me absolutely bonkers about jt miller puck goes the other way and he just
takes three strides and quits and waits to see how it'll play out listen if you want someone to
score 40 goals and be minus 17 he's your guy wow wow dude i watched the like 13 14 leafs i don't
need to see it again who was that for the 13 14 leafs that was the the jvr kessel bozak line
Which
If you needed a line to get outscored
3-2 every night
They scored a lot of points
You look at the score sheet and you're like
But they all had multi-point games
What happened?
Yeah
They all had multi-point games
Two points each, none of them on the power play
Why are they a minus?
Oh because they can't defend
Worth a shit
Shall we do the press conference?
