the entire episode and then as we are walking out of adam wilde's house literally literally put it on the shoes ready to go petting the cat goodbye john klingberg decides to sign with the anaheim ducks can you talk about i don't know how much of the original conversation you're going to include in the show it's all in there can you talk about how startlingly correct i was so you're about to hear us talk about how this negotiation it went very similar to taylor hall's negotiations a couple years back almost bang on where he fumbled the bag with nashville and had to settle on a one-year deal with the buffalo sabers and he gets according to kevin weeks where is it john clingberg let me uh john clingberg where's the tweet that i just

haven't even seen this tweet okay well it's a video because it's kevin weeks yeah um and he's ridiculous i feel like you should can you include the video sure why not i'll throw up the tweet but yeah i don't have i didn't even reopen the stuff from my backpack to do that asterisk asterisk breaking news asterisk asterisk goal light and newspaper emoji i'm told the anaheim ducks are closing in on a one-year contract in neighborhood of seven million for ufad john klingberg formerly of dallas of the dallas stars this is a player who wait i'm not done oh go ahead period at espn at nhl network at nhl hashtag hockey twitter this is a player who thought there would be an eight-year deal for eight million dollars as soon as he hit free agency

and now he's had to settle for a one-year deal with the anaheim ducks which is good bad can i have seven million dollars it's not eight years it's not all seven years i should say it there is risk there's risk that comes with it um and remember there was something about you know so a lot of players don't want to come to canada because of the high taxes well uh if i'm not mistaken evgeny dodonov had anaheim on his no trade list the full california teams all the california teams because of the taxes so whatever john klingberg is signing for it's not gonna go quite as far as what it will certainly not as far as it would have gone in dallas so his seven million is less valuable in california with the ducks than it would have been just signing a one

year seven million dollar deal with dallas which isn't there because we talked about the cap space that they have but we're going to talk about it well sorry we're going to talk god i'm so upset uh we're going to talk about how yes they have cap space right now but they also have jay cotton probably best goalie available and jason robertson best winger available at least or best winger not under contract so they got to give those two a big bunch of money uh this happened so like recently as to when we were done recording and talking and then sat back down to re-record this part i i haven't looked at anaheim's defense core it's not even confirmed by anyone else either no this is literally just kevin weeks but um currently they have cam fowler

kevin shattenkirk jamie drysdale uh colin white vacanainen uh josh maharu am i saying that correctly mahura mahura i'm not sure it's but what i'm seeing is a young core and it pushes some of those guys down so now what we got so fowler can play the left and right but you got shatton kirk you got drysdale who's the right and now you got klingberg who i mean the more you can keep drysdale to the third pair probably the best because he's very young on that team the ducks need to there's two styles of rebuild right there's the strip everything down to the core um or to the to the ground uh which we're seeing some teams do and then there's what the ducks are

doing where they're at least insulating their young guys for me this is the perfect uh move for the ducks because hey this doesn't work out we're rebuilding and we move you at the trade deadline that's i think exactly this works out we get a john klingberg for a year and he plays great and Maybe we take the next step. It's like Kevin Adams with Taylor Hall. Like 100%. Did he get a windfall for him? No, but it's free.

It's all free. It was just money. Just money. Just cap space that you have to spend anyways. And if you look at the Pacific Division, it's LA, Edmonton, Calgary, Vegas, Vancouver, San Jose, Anaheim, Seattle. Anaheim was like underratedly competitive for the first half of the season. And then they fell off very hard. They fell off very hard and also they don't have Getzlaf.

yeah um there's a bit of a like leadership vacuum so klingberg sort of helps with that but if if some players decide to take a next step who knows what you can do in that division because it seems to be a little weaker than the other ones in the nhl um so i so i don't know but it's a free guy you get to move at the trade deadline as well it's a good move another thing i was right about is the timing before holiday you're about to just hear a recording of how right i am i said he's probably gonna end up getting taylor hauled and sound like a one-year deal and it's a friday before a long weekend there are gonna be at least well we now know at least one player but there might be some players who are like you know what for peace of mind i want to sign today i want to

get my business done today i don't want to go into august or i don't want to go into this long weekend having this hang over my head i want it done his agent really screwed up this off season and i think that's why he's fired well isn't it interesting that how long has he had his new agent 48 wednesday night is when frank ceravalli reported the firing of the agent he has a new agent already and there's a deal so that's basically like i'm sure he could have done this with his former agent but this is basically you know what i'm gonna take whatever's out there and you're not getting any of it you're not getting the 10 or 15 or whatever it is that you're owed that's somebody else is getting this wow well and it's not just i think we're focusing

too much on fumbling the bag in free agency he fumbled the bag with the stars yes that's a very good point he wanted to be a star this was a year-long negotiation with the dallas stars and they walked away from the table yeah and now he's a star with the ducks by the way the rangers hashtag is forever blue what no is it you're not there's a there's a team called the blues you can't do that there's more famous blue teams as well yeah yeah the toronto maple leafs well they call themselves the blue shirts who was uh who was first the leafs are the rangers the original six but were the leafs a like club team before the rangers i think it was the leafs no i think it was the rangers yeah i'm sure i don't actually know i don't have a laptop in front of

it's just us in adam's house because jesse fed adam's cat i think yeah so uh adam's girlfriend natalie has a cat named teddy i guess it's adam's cat too now um teddy uh needed to be fed it's it's crazy how cats can just take care of themselves oh yeah you know you can leave a cat and some food and water and they just know like they have a bathroom spot they just roam around the house they don't really tear up anything too bad like a dog would like dogs get lonely and need constant walks and attention depends on the dog or the cat i suppose i guess i've never owned a cat like i know very little about cats i was allergic all my life growing up which is weird because teddy loves you teddy i'm teddy's best friend i think yeah so i fed teddy before this podcast and uh

yeah adam was gracious enough to leave his house for us to still use the studio even though he couldn't be here today i thought you were gonna end it at adam was gracious enough to leave leave the show leave no no no uh a schedule update at the beginning of the pod so everybody gets it uh we're gonna be recording on tuesday next week tuesday wednesday thursday is when you're gonna get pods oh our double pod on wednesday drops wednesday and thursday that makes sense ish yeah yeah that makes sense the second half of the wednesday pod is gonna be all questions but they're gonna be like uh like non-time sensitive questions obviously because we're going to drop it like 24 hours later but we're going to do like life advice and oh and

some maybe some zoo stories get in there you better come with your best zoo story ever went to the zoo the other day oh yeah it's quite nice to get back to my old stomping ground i saw that uh your son was at the zoo with a bunch of other children and i was wondering if you got them a tour that you got to uh dictate no because uh toronto zoo is the third largest zoo in north america and you do not bring a two-year-old to the toronto zoo with the intention of looking at the entire thing unless you'd like to not enjoy your day yeah i've never had a two-year-old so i wouldn't really know uh so it was me my wife and two of her friends uh plus four children between the ages of five and two so yeah there was a there was a lot of it's got to be a quick

trip yes yes yes you go and look at the goats by the way there's no camel ride anymore um they have goats there they have like a goat house can you ride the goats you cannot goat rides but they are quite adorable um and then we went in the kid zoo and we went and saw the polar bears got really up close with the polar bears and then we went home so why why did they how did they get austin matthews in that section ah ah goat goat have you seen the reddit post of uh there was this teacher who was like a beloved teacher but she had her feelings hurt because she she goes reddit i need to understand because i think i'm a good teacher i think i do a good job i think i'm really nice to the kids but they all keep calling me a goat and she didn't understand it and people had to

inform her no no they're calling you the greatest of all time and she was like oh my god you made my day oh my god that's really funny she didn't know that's awesome my students are being mean to miss henderson she's the goat math teacher or something oh miss henderson the goat yeah she's probably like every day like do i look like a goat what is it what is it about me is it my voice or no it's just you're a legend it's usually math teachers and english teachers that i think people fall in love with i remember i had a really good math teacher miss spano she was like the goat i like math teachers who um understand their subject is awful yeah because they're usually i i as a poor math student it always disarmed me to be like oh you

don't want to be here either okay so and then i would do better then it was okay yes i find this very difficult i it's one of those subjects where you can get left behind very fast i think okay does everyone understand this okay you understand this cool we're gonna use this for the rest of the year but what if my answer is no yeah what if i don't understand this and then i'm fucked from october to june because i don't understand this concept or formula or whatever yeah and everything and math kind of compounded on itself so like one thing led to the next thing never so you get left behind real quickly and like it was it was not even like week to week it felt like day to day you'd learn a new equation yeah like okay you do this and like we'll learn it for two days

and then go home do the homework and then two days later you got a new equation yep math was hard math i studied for it 10 times longer than anything else just to barely pass yeah um and history is taught very different high school to university because history you'll forget parts but if you get like main concepts they'll be like good good you understood the main themes that's great university my professor was like if there are 10 parts to a story and you get the first three right in the in the fourth wrong everything you get right after the fourth does not count fuck him well he was very he was a good teacher i think you could be a good teacher and a terrible marker does that make sense yeah because we all were like all right your class rules and

then he would mark our test and we'd be like fuck off man like i got nine out of ten on this thing and you gave me three because i missed one thing but his way of looking at it was this happened because this happened because this happened because this happened and if you took out one of the jenga pieces the whole tower falls down that's a terrible way to grade people like you're you're trying to give out bad grades if you're doing that he also said uh you're not allowed to record my class uh to which i said that's nice and recorded his class yeah so that i could i didn't freaking distribute it i listened to it in my car so i could understand these very difficult concepts and everything no the teacher's job should well i'm not a teacher like i don't

i hate speaking no on professor i like this i'm gonna send this to my wife what is a teacher's job as a student i would hope that a teacher is trying to make my life easy because all i'm trying to do is learn for for a student that's studious and is just there to learn and trying to understand the concepts i hope they're not trying to make my life more difficult by doing things like hey you can't record the class like that's that's detrimental to my learning ability yeah like you're you're hurting the learning process and your job is just to teach me i did there i was in a class once where the professor was cool enough to put uh the textbook for the class that they wrote available for free online wow and this girl in the class

she had uh her parents owned like i don't know i guess a printing press or a printing company and so she printed out the entire textbook and gave it to everyone in the class for 20 if they paid her and when she was confronted by the professor she's like but i'm not making a profit off of it i'm just i'm selling it for cost and he wasn't able to prove that she was making a profit off it so he just had to deal with this she shouldn't do that no i don't know how well she did in the class oh she shouldn't do that that's a little that's a little that jessica britannica shouldn't be doing that because the sound of her parents owned a printing press miss britannica well and this was in like 2006 or something like i feel like today high speed internet and

our phones are better you would use a pdf on an ipad yeah you wouldn't really need that but back then we were all like yeah i could do that i could yeah here's 20 bucks let's show you that's a little greasy it was a little greasy and we all knew it was greasy but we're all like well we're broke and we want the books so thanks so today um we're gonna be doing some hockey news obviously there's the hockey canada updates and we got a little clingberg news after uh we recorded yesterday or yesterday tuesday no wednesday wednesday what day is today we record wednesday oh my god and we had some news after that and then we're gonna do something that i'm calling stump steve oh if you remember do you remember stump the schwab how could anybody who grew up in our era i know the

name oh you don't remember it who's who's the schwab the schwab cory schwab no the espn guy the trivia show that used to run on like the score yes growing up stump this well i'm gonna bring it up i why i want to show you a picture let me see cory schwab not cory schwab cory schwab stump the schwab remember this guy he was he was he had the glasses he sat in his chair he always wore football jerseys or whatever jerseys stump the schwab everybody i've never seen that person my entire yes you have i've never seen that person my entire life so today we're going to be playing stump the steve he's got an argyle sweater he wore jerseys mainly so today we have i asked the discord our discord join our discord at sdpn.ca uh there's a link there join our discord

we have a press conference questions thread and i asked for trivia questions so we're gonna do an extended trivia and i don't know the parameters of the trivia game yet i'm gonna come up with that on the fly but you're gonna have to reach a certain amount of points oh i got about again you're coming up with the rules on the fly i like it i got about nine questions some of them are like multiple parts you know but i'm gonna i'm gonna determine like okay you gotta hit 30 points you know oh boy from these nine questions is this now or at the end at the end this is the end of the podcast oh okay i know you've been amped for this for days now since i told you we're gonna do it i it made me realize i'm a i'm a great sport what do you mean well i could have cheated and

gone on the discord oh i didn't even think of that but i didn't i'm uh because i i you know what no one would know but i would know i would know and i would be a cheater to me you even thought of that worries me no it's the link was there in the thing that i retweeted and i was like you know if i was a bad person i could i could click this but then i didn't you have bad person thoughts yeah but not bad person actions that's good that's good i think a lot of people have bad people thoughts it's just when they manifest them you know i'm the good guy here batman has bad person thoughts but he sticks to his code and doesn't kill the joker he wants to but he doesn't do it he won't let himself i'm batman

jesse what would you like to talk about john klingberg we're getting a little more information on why this man is unsigned i wanted him to sign the day after the last 32 thoughts episode because i think it would have been very funny just because jeff merrick has been on the john klingberg train all year so frank saravalli tweeted wednesday afternoon i'm told free agent defenseman john clingberg has parted ways with longtime agent peter wallen clingberg is now being represented by newport sports management now john clingberg going into this free agency was the top defenseman he was on all the ufa boards as the top number one defenseman he's going to get the most money this offseason he was negotiating with dallas all season long

and they could never reach a contract because he wanted north of like seven million i believe some of the numbers thrown out there well in eight years and eight years which is a problem he wanted the full max and uh and a lot of money so we've reached a point how many weeks in two and a half weeks in a free agency it feels like so much longer than that it feels like an eternity but he still doesn't have a contract and i think his firing of the agent is a sign that it's kind have been uh what's the word i'm looking for bungled bungled is a good word i think it's a sign that what we said last show about the clingberg situation was absolutely correct that uh they whether it was him or his camp they completely overplayed their hand they thought it

would be easier to get what they wanted um whether it was money or term or location situation whatever it was and now it's simply not there it's simply not there and i don't know if it's going to be there right we're all waiting for cadre cadre is literally holding up everyone in hockey summer right now um but one jenga piece like one puzzle piece one whatever something is going to happen that just sets off this chain reaction like the avalanche or someone else will clear space bring in cadre and then you know paul stassny finds a home maybe pierre-luc dubois gets traded milano signs acidary signs everything but at the end of that after the chain reaction i don't think there's an eight-year contract out there for john klingberg and if there is oh boy it's not north

the seven i'll be shocked yeah absolutely shocked he went into this offseason thinking that okay well i guess him and an agent his and his agent thought okay i'm the bell of the ball i'm gonna go to the dance and everybody's gonna want to dance with me somebody out of these 32 teams somebody's gonna give me seven million years and that just wasn't there wasn't there and it reminded uh you of a situation that happened with taylor hall during his buffalo signing off season because it was a very similar situation overplayed his hand overplayed his hand and and the way i heard it is he went to the nashville predators they uh had a four-year deal i think it was the preds made the offer and hall's camp it was hall and uh who's buddy who's his agent we don't like him

darren ferris and uh i you know oh what a great moment that i temporarily forgot darren ferris's name if for a brief moment you forgot he existed it was so nice ah well back to reality um they overplayed their hand and as i understand it talks stopped dead like it wasn't a hey let's revisit this later it was no go shit in your hat and go find that somewhere else and then all of a sudden hall's left with what he's left with what the buffalo sabers so he does get his number he approximately got his number with 8 million but it was only for one year it was with the buffalo sabers he spent a fortune by only scoring two goals because he was on the buffalo frigging sabers then he went to boston and yes he was much improved but it cost him so much money he ended

up signing a four-year deal there i think it was like six and a half no way yeah no way taylor hall should be going into the third year of a eight plus million dollar deal and they overplayed their hand other people have done it before martin b ron famously did it had to settle for far less cody franzen famously did it had to settle for far less um part of me wonders if nino nina rider did it this year um that's he's better than a four million dollar player in this league and he signed four million dollars times two with nashville that's underratedly like a fantastic deal for them yeah because he sat he sat just waiting for a deal up until well when did he sign like a couple days last week yeah but like it's if you're not signed in the first 48 hours

you're looking you're you got one foot in free agency and one foot in the bargain bin um and that's kind of what happened to him and i think in normal times the money would be there for john klingberg it's not there and he's a right-handed defenseman you like i understand his thought process i guess in the agent's thought process but i'd love to know i wish agent provocateur was still running and uh we don't have to wait around till season two but what a great episode oh yeah man the last one was so good yeah i listened to the whole thing if you haven't listen to it go listen to it as steve yelled at you to do last episode listen to the full thing not just the clips we played um but like i'd love to know alan's perspective on an agent going into

the off season and then completely misjudging what the teams think about his player because that's what it looks like that has happened like okay dallas might have believed in you to an extent during the regular season they were going to give you how many years that you turned down and then you thought okay there's teams out there who also believe that i'm just going to go to free and get this deal and the agent didn't have the right sources on the product of like the um how valued his client was underratedly uh one of the greatest things he did this off season was have mark andre flurry sign his contract at the draft um because that freed him up to do everything else you know like that's who's his biggest client it's either flower or patch already or huberto

oh oh yeah it's probably huberto well that was another thing he did at the draft though is he had preliminary discussions with bill zito as we found out on uh agent provocateur so you know he was a busy bee he was doing all his homework and then most of his clients signed in the first 48 hours and there was a few contracts in there i'm like well that's decently team friendly that's decently team friendly if he had waited two weeks they'd be a lot more team friendly yeah if david perron was still out there you think he's getting almost four million dollars a year and now he's in a great situation like detroit looks really good with him yeah um they were busy yeah really active and like even the the flurry signing that kind of it kicked off a lot

of the goalie mess because what flurry would have been the big fish out of all the goalies out there And he didn't happen So everybody's like okay who's next on the list I gotta go get Huso Or Kemper Oh yeah Huso for a trade And then Campbell and Kemper And all those pieces fell

And here we are With Kadri Still What do you think of the conspiracy theory That he's signed with the Islanders And they're just not announcing it I I'm not gonna rule it out

I kind of think that might be what's happened with some of the players where we're like, why hasn't anyone signed them? There's no reason to announce it. They don't have to. Zach Aston Reese, that's an Islanders-ass player. Milano? A couple of Paisans on the phone?

Lamorello and Milano? You know, I don't know. I don't know. But Kadri, I would... That's a big secret to keep. I kind of think we're underrating the Islanders as a factor. in all this calamity i it's definitely not not a possibility they could i could see in a week that oh he's an islander and they've just been waiting around oh it's gonna be a lot longer than a week

you think so it'll be like september they wait till september although they did just announce that they hired a new assistant coach and underratedly the rfas who still aren't signed are massive the stars alone have like two of the they probably have the best goalie remaining in jake ottinger they probably have the best forward remaining that i can think of off the top of my head and jason robertson and the leafs got rasmus sandin that's a big deal there's a number of teams like fairly significantly over the cap as well so we were talking about about clingberg signing back in dallas last uh last episode and like that wouldn't it's not really possible because of the rfa deals that are out there yeah we talked about the space that they have but a lot of that

space is essentially spoken for and like even for uh like we looked at teams like uh calgary and we're like oh calgary can go off their uh cadre and stuff but no they have huge rfas as well oh shillington i'm gonna write in uh bread man manji apani oh really yeah yeah and like um i'll run down some of the names of some of the rfas out there because yeah they're not small names lawson kraus uh kyler yamamoto that's a big one uh caleb jones in chicago see here wait i want to pause on yamamoto for a sec the way i've been spoken about in the media as kyler yamamoto i'm kyler yamamoto for this exercise and the way jesse pulley rv has been talked about he just signed for three million dollars i kill yamamoto i'm not signing for less than jesse bullier you're

out of your mind yep the way you've been talking about me and the way you've been talking about him i got news for you i got news for you ken i'm not signing for less than three uh yes for brat there's another rfa uh jake ottinger as we mentioned uh keifer bellows there's a player for the islanders eric branstrom in ottawa yeah but they're they'll be okay they have lots of space sean dersey but the it's not even the fact that they have the space for because most of these teams do it's just that they're not signed they're not under contract for their team no and i think they're under control players are uh filed for arbitration they're waiting on that as well we're waiting on that and that's happening it's weird i i just paying attention to like hockey

twitter and the hockey news that's been breaking i feel like these are the tremors before a major earthquake because there was nothing for like a solid week like nothing no we're still in the middle of that kind of you know but the last few days there's been a lot of little signings and re-signings and stuff like that and oh i just i just saw the the water in my little glass water ripple like jurassic park and and i just i wonder what's coming around the corner as soon as we release this podcast i also this this is a really silly theory but it might be true this is canada the friday before a long weekend traffic going to cottage country was bad on my way down here at like 10 in the morning people come in the other direction

yes okay and i wonder if there are people who are like you know what i'm gonna get the sign and i'm going to the cottage people want their business done before this long weekend i wouldn't be shocked at all i wouldn't be shocked at all we're all creatures of habit it shocks me that it's waited this long that we've come to this point where it's the the long weekend here and it's almost it's going to be august next week and there's so many rfa so many ufas that would need to sign do you think some of it is is um a mistaken perception of time because okay i don't know if we told the story but my wife and i booked a cottage we don't have one we we rented a cottage um the week of free agency yeah you did that in like june yeah not realizing

there's lots of examples of this in hockey and i think in other sports where i'm like this this was readily available information and i don't know sometimes i just wondered like do people read i think you are 100 correct about people's uh the way they consume media these days because i feel like a far far less people are actually reading the articles that are out there and instead they just hear it through the thing that read the thing and then translate it you know well like uh i was re-listening to our last show and we were talking about dom decision's article in the athletic um where he had nick suzuki as one of the top 10 worst contracts in the nhl which dom fully admitted like listen this is strange to me but i'm just giving it to you the way my model yeah there's

there's also a lot of context in the list unlike how it came about and this is how it came up with the list and that's this is it and then he explained that in the article no one read that not fixing the models i'm not going to call it error but um strange choice that shows dom's integrity right by not screwing with it and adam said something he goes that made me more likely to read the article and i wish i could have gone back and gone yeah made you more likely to read the article but i feel like most people just go look at this fucking bullshit because all they saw was the tweet 99 i like i think like 90 of people these days don't click on the thing and read it they're just reacting to the tweet do we have time you should you should make the time if

a thing that like the other day what happened with uh the jonathan taves interview so that felt like fairly significant revelations that i didn't see anyone really talking jonathan tave sat down for an extended interview it was in the athletic it was captain of the blackhawks very long form it was it was it didn't it wasn't a quick read and there was there was such meaty information in that and i read the entire thing as i always do with all of this information i read it through and i was like wow this is a lot and it wasn't a huge topic of conversation because it took time to read and decipher it needed for somebody to read it and then spit out a couple quotes and then people took those quotes but go there's a whole host of info there but there are a bunch

captaincy when does it move from john tavaris to austin matthews i like that those words a lot more because it's not no john we're stripping you we're taking it away stripping of the captaincy makes it seem there's a negative connotation to it when really if tavaris were to give the captaincy to austin matthews to

me it's a logical passing of the torch mm-hmm the leafs have one of the top stars in the nhl and he's not even the captain of his team you know when we go through the conversation that's been had recently of who the best players are almost all of them are captain and one of the exceptions is kale mccarr who's only 22 and he's not captain because nathan mckinnon is captain tavaris he's not in the best player conversation really anymore um he's still extremely good it's got landis gog is captain oh yeah you're right yeah landis gog captain oh shit i always forget that i'm sorry god they're good yeah i guess that's why they won huh anyway um well i guess it's just mcdavid

because people are marking it to come up with this contract so next year matthews is eligible for the extension right next off season he can sign so a lot of people want the captaincy to go to him when he signs that deal so he signs like the new eight-year deal or whatever at that same time when it's like i'm going to commit to this franchise he gets the captaincy as well doesn't that make sense right i think i think that's the right timeline like what's wrong if jt's down for it like that's how okay we'll have this it'll become a media story in like february or whatever as as the leafs have a little bit of a downturn and and they're they lose a couple games there was like will austin resign and he needs to get the captaincy and all

that stuff but it just it makes sense to give this guy who's the heart trophy winner the ted lindsey winner the best player in the nhl last season uh by every metric um give him the captaincy of the team it makes perfect sense especially if to he's also the leader in the locker room like we don't know how the conversation locker rooms go in the locker room of the toronto maple leafs go but if he's also leading it off the ice in in the way that we think he is then yeah he deserves a captaincy based on everything i've been told he is that's the thing he is the leader really popular guy popular within the team popular league wide and uh has you know ideally done some growing up because you know the timing of the captaincy we all know coincided with uh you know him getting

charged for what happened in arizona i believe it was dropped instead of settled i'm not sure i don't know it was a while ago but yeah um and kept it a secret from the team like what no judgment from anyone involved yeah no judgment and that includes his representation you thought you could keep that secret from the toronto maple leafs okay bud oh you couldn't even keep a secret from twitter um and there's a world famous professional athlete And the Leafs said Tavares was their pick the whole time, which I just don't believe. I don't believe it. And we've heard that that wasn't really the case.

I don't believe them, but he was the right pick. Yes. He was clearly the right pick. Now that some time has passed, is it possible to give it to Austin Matthews, let's say, next summer? Yeah, it's possible. and it obviously depends on how the season goes and how it ends and all that stuff but it's clearly it's all they're on the path to do this where austin commits to the leafs for another eight years and well it'd be nine years because there'd be a year left on his current deal

so it'd be another nine years and then with that comes the captaincy i don't think that i don't think i don't think he's ever signing for eight years no no you think he's got the he's got the nba attitude about it where i'll like take a three year or something you know and i can always move around work worked out pretty well for them yeah worked out pretty well in the nba so yeah those those one plus one player options that lebron signed all those years in cleveland yeah all right every year i'm gonna make a decision on what i want to do here every single year it's ridiculous yeah austin he's like he's the new wave that i hope um there's more player control amongst these nhlers and it's not just everybody taking the eight-year deal it's like okay maybe

you remember uh reebok used to have the uh nhl deal and then adidas replaced reebok in 2060 after the 2017 season does adidas not own reebok but adidas owned reebok at the time so when adidas reebok signed their deal in 2006 to become the new sponsor of the nhl jerseys so but then adidas bought reebok that same year so they said they bought the contract rights and then when the it came up for renewal they said okay we own you guys we're just gonna replace you as the new uh jersey sponsor so it'd be like um city tv replacing sportsnet under the rights for a tv show you know it's one arm to the other it didn't really matter so a lot of people were looking at this adidas deal and be like oh it only lasted from 2017 to 2024 no it was not it was really two

contracts because they owned Reebok as well so it's been a long time it's been since 2006 that this parent company has owned uh owned the NHL jersey right and Adidas actually sold uh Reebok last year because uh oh I didn't know yeah they were like losing money like crazy with that deal so yeah it wasn't a good company to buy and to own so yeah anyways they don't own them anymore but yeah um I think a lot of fans are happy about this because I don't think a lot of hockey fans were impressed by anything adidas really did with the jerseys like the reverse retros were a try but nobody's really happy i i thought the reaction was very hockey twitter yeah um because it was negative on both sides it was adidas didn't do a good job and hooray and also oh no the dread of

the the translation for some of them were really difficult yeah it was it was uh but a lot of coverage mass coverage i was happy about that one thing we got new information on was the uh ndas that hockey canada uh gave to uh made people sign once they settled so i'm gonna read this little excerpt here um smith said that hockey canada entered into the settlement agreement with the complainant's best interest. And this is for the 2008 case. 18. It's an 18, sorry, case, with the complainant's best interest in mind. Though Housefather pushed back on that claim with a line of questions about why, if that was the case, the settlement included a confidentiality agreement that would have precluded the

complainant from speaking about what happened to her publicly. So we haven't heard from her uh publicly because she can't i don't know if she's willing or able to but she also can't because hockey canada has an nda uh where that came with the settlement of the 2018 case i need a lawyer who specializes in ndas to come on here because i don't understand how that's legal and i feel like it very nakedly only protects um the alleged perpetrator right um i i'm sorry how does that protect the defendant so that was or not the defendant how does that protect the alleged victim yes so that was the direct questioning from parliament to hockey canada how was this in the best interest you said you settled this in the best interest of her but you also made her

sign an agreement that uh says she can't speak publicly so hockey canada followed up during the exchange uh it was revealed the hockey canada recently amended the settlement agreement to allow the complainant to speak more frequently house father indicated that the committee just recently received that amendment document so they have amended the document with the 2018 victim to allow her to speak more publicly oh okay yes so she can okay that's good so we'll we'll see what comes of that but that is under now that everything's been re uh reopened like all of these cases they have gone back they've amended the nda so she can't talk now like but it doesn't mean that they didn't initially have an nda for uh four years where she couldn't speak so okay

not without knowing if hockey canada had ndas for sure or without knowing the blackhawks for example had ndas for sure what i don't like about them is it makes it seem like a trade so we'll give you money in exchange for you don't say anything and the reason that's wrong is this is not a trade this is you giving me restitution for your fuck up whatever the fuck up is this isn't a deal we're not making a trade here this is you giving me what i deserve because you did wrong she is why are you getting anything out of this why does she owe hockey canada anything yes what that's exactly it whether you know you settle with a company for whatever reason and the company makes you sign an nda that's the company getting something from you the company doesn't deserve a

fucking thing and in this case if that is the case hockey canada doesn't deserve a goddamn thing um they said asked they followed up again they asked whether hockey canada is willing to release victims from nda smith said the organization would honor their wishes barring any legal reasons that would prevent hockey canada from doing so big word salad uh they said they're open to releasing people of ndas but they haven't done that yeah scott smith has been with hockey canada since 1995 beat it yeah um there have been calls to uh overhaul um rick west had tweeted along those lines about um hockey canada entering a trusteeship so i'll just read the tweet the tweet here canada Canadian Sport Minister

Pascal Saint-Ange I don't know if I'm saying that right Sure sought legal advice Thursday to determine if the government could force Hockey Canada into a trusteeship and was told it cannot So they

cannot take over control of Hockey Canada The government? The government, directly but I believe there probably should be ways to have these people step down. I would say another um criticism of the hearings is i uh the parts that i listened to i don't know if other parts were different um the parts i listened to live though were uh members of parliament

were only given six minutes at a time and they were cut off like rather abruptly and i just feel like six minutes is not enough time i don't i don't think they got enough time if you're gonna to do this do this go the whole hog um and uh just because someone's gone over the six minutes don't cut off the fucking answer like what are we doing this for why do we have a time limit yeah we're not doing this to be efficient we're doing this to get it right yeah they have a shot clock yeah for these questions it's weird yeah be correct within this time limit well how about i just be correct so um there was some more clarification on the settlement money that we brought up last episode so since we since we recorded that one we talked about the 7.6 million

dollar uh uh amount that's been used to settle nine sexual abuse claims so 6.8 of that we found out has gone uh has been related to claims from graham james yes so you remember graham james uh the i believe it was the 80s uh when he was a coach uh within and or 90s 80s and 90s and then that's been ongoing for for decades now and even a couple years ago i believe there was another case against him uh where he went to trial so yeah that's where the 6.8 uh came from and then there's another i guess that leaves 900 grand out there for uh the rest of the 7.6 million dollars and then what was the other thing that was revealed where the do you have it up yeah i got this one as well in total 20 people have received settlement funds through the national equity fund

uh including the nine that involved alleged sexual abuse in addition to the claim settled through the fund hockey canada revealed that it has settled 12 additional claims of sexual abuse through insurance since 1996 those claims were settled for a total of 1.3 million but then there was one guy who four four of the settlements came from one person remember that one that was revealed in her in her last episode adam read it out um are you are you thinking about graham james in the 6.8 no no it was a different one okay i'm almost positive unless oh yeah it could have been graham james it could have been there's so much right this is this is this is what i'm saying and this is a difficult i'm appreciating

how difficult this is to cover as an ongoing story um and it actually kind of goes back to what we were talking about earlier with history um and kind of proving that professor right if if there's 10 points you need all 10 of them because if you miss one then it uh sort of weakens the integrity of your understanding of the story so this is one of those things where i'm gonna have to sit down and do a lot of reading do a lot of reading or reading from the people who are doing fantastic work at the globe mail at the athletic at tsn uh and sports as well like there's a lot of reporters out there doing uh fantastic work on on the coverage of this story and it's not going away we have the world juniors coming up in a week and there's been talk
