Starting point is 00:09:06 last time this season this is the last one dave okay yeah yeah and you know i don't i don't know much dave is dave is in the middle of a construction zone right now he's he's rebuilding his house and as you can see it's several floors several floors dave yes uh and skating facilities too which is fantastic it's great you know it's what i want right um where are you actually right now because this is an interesting story i'm at the ford performance center for uh junior maple leaves training camp or something oh dave is participating yeah yes dave's dave's one of the hot process one of the junior maple leaf he's in kyle dubas's bland office that you hate oh yeah that's where kyle dubas's shitty office was right yeah performance center have you seen that amazon
Starting point is 00:09:51 documentary dave it's the worst office i've ever seen and he's always in it with his cardigan it's the nicest the nicest thing is his office is his cardigan i did otherwise it's like here's some brick kyle i wonder if brad's office is there too do you know no no you don't think so No, those things take months. Dave, if you can, go scope out the Performance Center and try and find Brad's office. I will search that out and report back, maybe even with pictures.
Starting point is 00:10:21 I'm a habit of getting kicked out of places in this place. I didn't think it was a hockey rink, but yeah, this was plan B, by the way. Okay, yeah. I'm assuming there was supposed to be hockey in the background. Women's World Cup starts July 20th, so there's a lot to go on here, But let's start with the Canadian angle.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Canada versus Nigeria. The odds are a little bit in Canada's favor on this one. Yeah. When you look at it, Canada paying a 1.28. Nigeria paying a 7.60. A draw, which obviously you guys know happens in soccer quite a bit, just under a 5. So, you know, according to these numbers,
Starting point is 00:10:59 this is at least a Canada 2-0, 3-0 game. But the thing is, with the men's and women's program in Nigeria, you don't always know what you're going to get because of the lack of scouting and so forth. But you always know that you're going to get a quick, fast-paced game. And I'm not saying by any means I'm taking Nigeria as a long shot here. But I think this is going to be closer than what a lot of people think it is, guys. Any thoughts on this? Are you guys looking forward to this? And of course, happening in Australia, which, you know, conditions a little bit different out there and in time zones as well as far as when we're going to actually watch this game.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Yeah, it's interesting because Canada's in the group with Australia and like I want to take Canada to win their group. But I would never bet against the home country that's also good at the sport, you know, because they always ramp up the the home athletics to peak at the moment you host your World Cup. right so i'm not gonna bet uh against australia to win the group but i did put my five dollars down on canada beat nigeria which will pay out a dollar 40 group b is australia canada republic of ireland and nigeria and i think it's interesting that you know all those countries i mean nigeria is obviously the long shot but ireland as much as where it's like oh it's just the republic of ireland everybody plays soccer there everybody yes so it's not like you know as much as the odds are although i have to say the odds are kind of crazy if you take ireland it's like 16 to 1
Starting point is 00:12:25 right or 17 to 1 almost 17 to 1 yeah you're right and a lot of people are talking this is the group of death because they they figure that all four teams have the ability to move to the second round or the you know the qualifying round because only two out of the four will move on so you mentioned there australia 1.51 pretty good value on canada to win the group actually almost three to one so if you're you're interested in taking a team that's had very good history in this tournament and a good squad. 3-1 is pretty good. You mentioned Ireland at about 17-1
Starting point is 00:12:56 and the long-shot Nigerians around 33-34 to win that group. Probably not your best bet out of the three teams that are above it, but nonetheless, an interesting placement for Canada at this year's World Cup. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:13:13 The Socceroos are obviously going to be out in full force. Steve, that's what they call themselves. They're the Socceroos, which I absolutely love. And Australian fans are just the best. So when Canada does play Australia, it'll be kind of fun to see them. And they're just a riot. So, Dave, anything else we should hit before we wrap it up for the summer?
Starting point is 00:13:37 Just one thing. Yeah, that sounds weird. You're right. The winner right now, they're looking at a USA-England final as far as the odds are concerned. uh the americans are the favorites fire followed by uh england spain germany france if you're looking at canada to win this event you're going to get some pretty good value at 31 and a half to one um so according to the numbers probably shouldn't even be in the semi-finals maybe a quarterfinal appearance is where they peak out according to the numbers but the numbers are not
Starting point is 00:14:10 Always right. Steve, give us your Australian accent. Nar. Nar. Nar. Jesse, give us yours. Nar. All right, Dave, you're up next.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Do it. Do it, Dave. Crikey. Dave, we'll see you in September, sir. Love you guys. Talk to you soon. The most interesting contract in the NHL has yet to be signed. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:14:35 And that contract is Conor Bedard's. Oh. You know, it's funny how this stuff sort of slips under the radar when it doesn't happen here. Not to be very Toronto about it, but I remember in 2016, Matthews went late into the summer. It was like August or something, and he still didn't have a contract. And it was Lou Lamorello up to his Lou Lamorello tricks. and it's like dude this isn't you know the second third or fourth or fifth overall pick this is the first yes you gotta give them the most yes like what what leverage what what do you think is going
Starting point is 00:15:18 on here sorry sorry sorry no there will be no bonuses for you austin yeah oh okay no do that with rookies and he was like okay cool i'll go play in europe then yeah or just i'm the first what are you doing what are any of us doing here um yeah but now here we are i guess it's not that bad it's july 14th i keep thinking i'm mentally for some reason i'm at the end of july i don't know why it's it's fine that bedard doesn't have a contract right i think it is i i actually don't think it's a big deal but i did think it was notable you know where are we now uh we don't we don't we still have a tony d'angelo trade we still don't have an eric carlson trade which is really the Tony D'Angelo trade in waiting.
Starting point is 00:16:00 And we don't have a Conor Medard signing. And I don't think Blackhawks fans even care. I haven't even seen an article about it, but it is worth noting. It's July 14th. Sure. And probably doesn't get signed until mid-August. I don't know what there is really to negotiate about.
Starting point is 00:16:15 It's so, rookie deals especially, this is where the players really screwed themselves. Like, rookie deals really limit you. And it's fascinating. if i was if i don't know if this is if this is possible but i was thinking about it this morning on the way in if i'm connor bedard why do i sign a three-year contract uh my rookie my elc should be one year see and then i want a big contract i think that's a cba thing is it i i'm pretty sure no because we we've seen elcs go one two and three years yes but that's based on
Starting point is 00:16:50 experience and age remember there was there was an issue it was someone on the canucks russian guy can't quite remember his name right now um but uh nikita tramkin okay um uh jim benning wanted to sign him to a three-year elc and i believe they even announced it until the nhl went no he's too old to sign a three-year elc you can't do that it's actually two okay so yeah there's so there is a uh window or time frame like a contract length you need to sign depending on your age uh the length of your elc is so if you are 18 to 21 your elc is three years if you're 22 to 23 your elc is two years and if you're 24 years of age your elc is one year man the pas what do they even do so there you go so what do they even do you have to sign three years
Starting point is 00:17:45 remember what a fucking load of crap remember what you've you've said in the past uh you know basically the generation of hockey players that we grew up watching sold the sold them out sold the younger players down the road uh this is what we're talking about yeah any player younger than 25 as of september 15th during the first year of their contract must sign an entry-level contract and here was it what's interesting is that the rookie max is based on i believe percentage of a cap because i think it it moves up a little bit every year just like the cap goes up still under a million so the blackhawks and this is good for black blackhawks fans yeah 925 so it's still 925 it's 925 but you can make uh up to 3.2 2.85 million dollars i thought it was higher yeah
Starting point is 00:18:29 i thought it was 3.2 maybe this is from 2022 so maybe it's increased there you go so maybe but it's also um 2.85 plus the 925 so that's probably the number that we land that so there So the league fought the PA to prevent the very thing that you're suggesting, where, you know, sign a short deal as a rookie, and then, obviously, you know, you're a 19-year-old phenom in the league, so I'm going to get $10 million forever. They prevented that.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Yeah. Hey, NHLPA, what do you do? Oh, they're useless. What do you do? there's well they what do you do they may be busy because of a story that broke yesterday what do you do so you think a guy one year in the league should be able to be an rfa i'm saying i don't know i'm saying that you should not be forced into signing a three-year contract i don't know if if you're signing a longer term deal at any stage in your career and i'm not saying there
Starting point is 00:19:29 shouldn't be some like listen the nhl clearly needs there to be some sort of we need to keep the rookie prices down they don't want what is the alexander dag where you're signing like a five year 11 million dollar contract before you've even played a game i don't know why you don't want that it's not that bad they're just billionaires this is fucking pocket change to them but anyway i do think it's kind of bullshit that uh in no other in no other really profession where you are a high-end individual right where you are a you are acknowledged as the top of your year in talent are you forced to sign a contract at not just below market rate we're talking like if conor bedard goes the open market is he a 10 million dollar player right now
Starting point is 00:20:13 uh probably so he's probably making if he gets his bonuses which he has to perform he has to play the game he's signing at 10 of his current market value and he can up it to close to 30 of his current market value that's that's that that yo the nhlpa from 20 years ago you guys should be fucking ashamed all you people that walked out on ashamed they're the ones uh reaping the benefits i know because they're the gms and they're signing these deals it's true stevie y and uh brendan shanahan and it's not because i don't mcginley's in the front office now it's not because i don't want the best for blackhawks fans or whatever but like i do think it's like you can admit that being working your whole life to be great at something it's like yeah
Starting point is 00:20:54 he's gonna make some good money at 19 i'm not taking that away no no one's gonna feel the only person we're saving here is the rich ass owner who are frankly uh they don't have the best reputation these guys in particular anyway i don't know i just bullshit restricted free agency they're trying to manage the economics of the game yeah no they're trying to manage their own fucking pocketbooks they're trying to keep superstars in the market that they were drafted in yeah it's restricted free agency designed to keep what i got an idea yeah pay them well restricted free agency is designed to keep a star in the market they were drafted in at least eight years with connor mcdavid it's 11 because uh what they did is he has his three-year elc
Starting point is 00:21:40 he's as good as everyone says he is so he's gonna sign for this is why austin matthews i i think is actually clever and it's not it doesn't benefit the leafs but it benefits him as an individual Well, believe it or not, I do understand this. McDavid has his three-year ELC. Then he signs the eight-year max. So he's committed to being an Edmonton Oiler for 11 years. Oh, you're talking about McDavid. I was going to say, I don't know if Bedard ever signs the eight-year max.
Starting point is 00:22:08 I think Matthews kind of set a path for new superstars in that you shouldn't sign that eight-year because it makes more sense to not. But it's still eight. Yeah. Right? So it walks you to free agency, unrestricted free agency, but under the current CBA, I think it's 26 or something that you become a UFA, and there's certain circumstances that can change that a little bit.
Starting point is 00:22:33 But even if Matthews, let's pretend he walks at the end of this and signs for 15 somewhere, eight years as a Leaf. Which is, I think, if you're trying to grow the game, it's not the worst idea. Like, I'm not super critical of the NHL keeping superstars and Marcus because the NBA has the problem where you can't build a decade long culture around a superstar because they're always jumping around. You know, there's the Steph Curry and the Dame Lillard of the world and Clay and Dame's going to go anyway. Dame's leaving now, but that's after 11 years in Portland, you know, and for fans to to to hold on to a team and fall in love with players. You got to stick around for a little agreed.
Starting point is 00:23:16 So I don't fault them for building that into the system. I fault them for the fact that Conor Bedard is going to make the same base salary as Austin Matthews did eight years ago. Pretty much. No, Austin Matthews made $925,000. Oh, well, there you go. That should move with the cap.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Oh, yeah, that makes a little more sense. Right? I think that's a different conversation. Sorry, yeah. And I think that's more my thing. It's like I'm not against... I totally get the marketing aspect. I totally get...
Starting point is 00:23:42 And a lot of these rookie deals, let's be honest, these players either won't live up to them or won't outplay them but we're expecting that conor bedard will very few actually out like really outperform their elc especially in the first year i expected he will uh i just think i just think it's kind of crap i don't know man like i feel like he um he's gonna make his endorsement dollars and i know he's gonna be great and i know he probably doesn't even give a shit but like from an outsider's perspective it's kind of bullshit uh that's just how i feel it's one of those things where like okay you compare conor bedard to the you know regular person you know working at their job no one's
Starting point is 00:24:18 gonna feel bad for him yeah but we're coming at it from the world of sports and he's the greatest yeah of his generation so far and if you look at all the other sports and your conversation about the the rookie deals especially for it should be pro rate i don't know pro rate pro rated to where you are in the in the draft as well like first rounders should be eligible for a higher entry-level deal than second rounders i think because you're how your potential is higher so you should have the capacity to sign them back uh to a more lucrative deal and if you look at other sports there are categories with which you can sign a player to so in the nba or in the nfl you can sign a guy up to a 40 million dollar contract you take him number one overall you
Starting point is 00:24:59 know you can add this like 26 million dollars in signing bonus or whatever it is you can add on to that if he's a quarterback that went number one you know so you can do that and with the nhl it should be a sliding scale and it should have also gone up you know it should have gone up it should be uh well there's two million dollars i think is quite reasonable for conor bedard in his first year if that's his entry level deal that's his base that kind of makes sense yeah if it's the base and not even the bonus and it should have definitely been higher than 925 and he should definitely have access to more money in the system than somebody who was selected first in the seventh route yes fight for it but the pa has not done that work pa doesn't give a shit um i should let
Starting point is 00:25:43 you guys know that as of seven minutes ago the philadelphia flyers have placed defenseman tony d'angelo on unconditional waivers so it looks like the trade to carolina is not happening excuse me which might mean that eric carlson might be a carolina hurricane whoa whoa whoa whoa wait maybe wait wait wait though so we made a big deal of philip zadina walking away from something like four or five million dollars tony d'angelo has another isn't it this isn't for purpose of termination no this is not a mutual yeah this isn't termination buyout this is their they sent him down this is after a year this would be his second buyout after a year chuck fletcher should just he hold on the rangers bought tony d'angelo out after his first year as well oh my god big
Starting point is 00:26:29 extension how isn't that poison how is it like someone's gonna sign him after this how isn't that poison how isn't that the end of it i don't understand he signs a deal with the rain a multi-year deal with the rangers yeah they buy him out after year one yep he plays one year in carolina then he signs in philly so he did great in carolina didn't get bought out even once yeah it's crazy gets traded to philly signs his contract there and after one year he's getting bought out yep how isn't that the end of it i mean i don't know if it's the end to be honest the other way to look at it with tony d'angelo is that it's just bad value well yeah the buyout makes so much sense that they that that philadelphia did not want uh this player not
Starting point is 00:27:23 because necessarily they didn't like the player or whatever it doesn't fit where they're at and it was the last GM's guy and it's not this GM's guy like forget Tony's history with the buyouts don't forget Tony's history I was like well I think I think in the in the sense that he obviously is clearly an NHL
Starting point is 00:27:40 defenseman in the right position it's just that they this is a flat cap league and we're going to talk about this actually with the Capitals as well and how much trouble they're having they can't find a taker for this guy even at 50% retained because 2.5 million dollars
Starting point is 00:27:56 is double and a half how much the cap went up for each team this year. And he's a $5 million defenseman, 50% retained, $2.5 million. Everybody's cap went up a million. It's hard to trade a guy like that. Go ahead, Jesse. The buyout penalties here, so this year it'll cost them $1.66667 million against the cap and the same amount next year. So they'll save $3.3333 million on the cap this year.
Starting point is 00:28:26 and uh they'll be they'll since they'll incur a cap hit they'll negative savings next year but only 1.6 against the cap for the next two years to buy out the five million dollar contract of tony d'angelo and there there's not more info on that tweet from philly so maybe they are working on a mutual termination because the first things you got to do is place them on non-conditional waivers and then the second step is the buyout or the mutual termination so maybe they are working on that and they're letting him go somewhere else i don't know uh i've we just need more news oh my gosh i can't remember the last oh it's uh it sounds like it might come fast and furious we'll see if this is what is happening and he was linked to the whole eric carlson thing i knew it i
Starting point is 00:29:07 freaking knew it i knew it the second i said this is gonna be the last show i knew it shut up you're trying to will you're trying to will news into existence wake up sheeple and it's they're listening wake up sheeple i can't remember what i was gonna say but it's no it's a reasonable buyout for philly i will say that yeah it was a buyout or termination we'll see that that deal the butterfly effect we talked about last uh episode that cba rule changes projected uh changes the trajectory of a lot of stuff oh i remember what i was gonna say i can't think of it is the purpose of contract according to cat friendly contract termination there you go wow not by not a buyout when you're left will forfeit five million dollars it looks like he said
Starting point is 00:29:56 it looks like he's betting on him he's doing the zadina he's willing to walk away from that wow the buyout would have made sense what would the buyout have looked like jesse i just went you just did okay sorry sorry i was pulling up i was trying to i was digging to find like is there any reporters not in Muskoka I'm sorry that's literally okay that's okay the mutually terminated contract makes that's crazy damn I can't believe Danny Breer got him to do that that's crazy fucking master class in Philly right now because you have to agree I'm don't want this five million dollars this is how like listen we keep talking about how the NHL isn't doing well compared to its you know counterparts and people are like do you even like hockey and this is what this is what
Starting point is 00:30:40 we're talking about the cap tied to the success of the league has been so poor and so shit for so long that at the first sign the cap is going to go up players are willing to walk away from literally millions of dollars because of the opportunities that are on the horizon assuming there isn't another global pandemic um philip zadino walked away from something like four or five million guaranteed dollars and tony d'angelo is walking away from what is it five million dollars five exactly five he's walking away from five million dollars for one year of work and his buyout number if he had made it jesse would have been even if he didn't walk away and they bought him out he forced a buyout uh how much money he would get yeah uh couple mil initial cap it
Starting point is 00:31:33 buyout cost post bout earnings savings cap it um i don't know where's it's on the furthest right i believe the cap it annual cost i guess he would cost he would make the 1.6 million of the buyout yeah so he'd make 1.6 this year next year like there you go he needs so it's about three some 3.1? John Klingberg signed for 4.15. Like, Tony D'Angelo doesn't even need that to be made whole between the buyout and whatever he's going to make this season, assuming he signs somewhere.
Starting point is 00:32:10 And then the years going forward with the cap going up, it's fascinating. Now, does Philly have somebody else or somebody who is in, what's the RFA negotiation called? arbitration arbitration um because then they'll have that second buyout window i want to say they signed both their guys so they might not have had the second buyout window yeah they signed kate's and i can't remember who their other was i want to say they had two okay now i don't i don't want to bring it here but yesterday we found out alex galchenyuk was uh on unconditional waivers
Starting point is 00:32:47 for purpose of contract termination. We're looking at this Tony D'Angelo thing as purely hockey. The Flyers making a decision and D'Angelo making a decision. We just got the news. We just don't know that. Right.
Starting point is 00:33:03 We don't know that. But what a fascinating time. What a fascinating time to follow this sport. Let's assume that's exactly what happened. it's purely hockey yeah d'angelo's done it zadina's done it uh it's only july 14th um who knows maybe another player chooses to walk away from millions of dollars it's funny they don't like their current you call it fascinating but i would have rather i want to see like trades happen for hockey reasons instead of like this this to me speaks to something else like i don't
Starting point is 00:33:40 feel like these transactions are the best for the game it's trying to try to explain this to a casual fan like what happened a dude just isn't on the team anymore it's not entertaining yeah like so i i don't know i feel like the the nhl screws itself with these kinds of rules and the salary cap and all that stuff because it should just be a lot simpler it should just be like trades and signings and big deals and all that kind of stuff but instead we have guys just walking away and and getting putting on waivers and them agreeing instead of taking 3.2 million dollars to just give up five million dollars that's so complicated i do this on my dad all the time i try to explain like the basic ongoings of the nhl and every every time as i'm explaining
Starting point is 00:34:22 it i'm like this is fucking stupid i can see my i can see my wife's eyes glazing yeah like the hockey part of hockey yeah for me that's that's my sister who's just like she listens to us but chooses a couch she doesn't understand like the cba and all that stuff and it's like if we can't explain these things in a sentence to these people or just say the thing that happened and their reaction is whoa then it's a little too complicated yeah now again there's also the hardcore audience that you should serve so i think that there is i think that there is a um uh there's an interesting play here because there are teams that can afford this and would want this like i told you last episode anaheim has two nhl defensemen on the right side under contract
Starting point is 00:35:04 and they're under the cap floor wasn't d'angelo linked to them might have been i don't know um but you know there's there there are obviously places and i'm sure the agent called around and said if he becomes an unrestricted free agent would would you sign i'm sure they have a plan in place and uh and and so i it will be interesting to see where he ends up because it's clearly it's just not a fit with the flyers but there was enough value that carolina was actually going to part with one of its unsigned prospects from the ncaa massimo rizzo who's pretty good yeah winner of the 2023 award for most italian who won in 2022 uh that would be uh my mom your mom clementina clementina um i don't know i think
Starting point is 00:35:55 it's gonna be it's it'll be fascinating to see where he ends up and and i guess um it is kind of i wasn't going to start here but it kind of plays into what's going on in washington right now uh getting kuznetsov um it was reported in the russian press that he had requested a trade in february or march he never confirmed it nor denied it but brian mcclellan actually did with capitals.com writers uh the other day um he said i'd still like to make a trade we were aggressive about the draft with our offers but nothing materialized i feel we have some pretty good offers out there and uh guys we're pursuing haven't moved yet i don't know uh if they move move them now or when they move maybe at the deadline i'm not sure what happens some guys
Starting point is 00:36:35 need to be signed so i'll stay involved with all that stuff so it looks like the caps are not only ready to move on from kuznetsov who's who's been a capital for a long long time but also anthony mantha who uh that hasn't worked it has not worked that's a guy a really tantalizing player who i mean this is a lazy comparison just because they're both big and skilled but you look at him and go why why can't you be tage thompson like why why you it you have the tools yeah or had or looked like you could one day have that and it's wild that we're having that conversation given the Tate Thompson discourse
Starting point is 00:37:16 from just two years ago this guy's washed but I really had high hopes for Mantha one more thing it looks like the the the story the D'Angelo story is is moving ongoing it's ongoing it looks like it
Starting point is 00:37:31 is actually according to fridge it is a buyout oh my god so it was reported oh wait no that tweet has now been deleted I don't know more smelling salt i don't know i don't know i'm just going to get uh okay here's what freed wrote some clarity here philadelphia put d'angelo on waivers to buy out his contract that tweet does exist okay that makes more so he assuming he clears tomorrow d'angelo will be
Starting point is 00:37:59 a free agent there so he was bought out but interesting that we were talking about it anyway uh that's where we that's where you started initially yeah i thought it was a buyout would made sense and again like why do you forego that kind of money three you're giving up uh i guess it's three five five no 3.2 is what you're gonna make right so you're 1.8 or whatever you'd be giving 1.8 million dollars which you'll probably make back up when you sign where oh yeah so somebody will sign it like 3.1 and the bio number makes so much sense for philly oh yeah instead of five million dollars 1.6 for two years like yeah take that i agree i think two jesse um i think it's interesting you mentioned the ducks because they're a team that is
Starting point is 00:38:45 you can see the math work there uh the ducks and the blackhawks have committed to grossly overpaying uh players like just to sort of re-bolster their shambolic rosters after like Like, basically a bedard recovery. You know, I feel like you couldn't get better value than $8 million of Nick Foligno and Corey Perry. Like, jeez. Like, okay. Nick Foligno. Let's just look up the points here.
Starting point is 00:39:14 He had 10 goals, I think. Foligno. Okay. Nick Foligno. He had, you think 10 goals or 10 points? Goals. He had 10 goals and 16 assists in 60 games. Fuck.
Starting point is 00:39:26 Corey Perry for four million who is a face or his is a playoff guy had 12 goals and 13 assists so Foligno actually 25 points so for 51 points expected the caps are gonna get they're gonna have eight million dollars oh sorry Blackhawks eight million bucks right so you can look at the math and you could imagine the phone call between Pat Verbeek with the Ducks and Danny Breer with the Flyers and hey do you want D'Angelo yeah I'll take D'Angelo do you guys not want D'Angelo anymore no no we don't want okay uh well what does he make well five million bucks okay well i don't really want to pay him that so you're gonna have to pay us to do that well we don't really want to do that oh okay well what if you bought him out which is going to be you know cheaper for you
Starting point is 00:40:15 than giving up assets and we'll take him for i don't know three and a half roughly would make him whole uh 3.4 or whatever it is and like i don't even look at that as a gross overpayment for d'angelo that's why i brought up clingberg yep 4.15 um i mean both are sort of shambolic in their own ends yep sick on pp1 right-handed shots um you you can see the logic there but i'm also assuming the ducks um there's an opportunity here for d'angelo to come out of this for an overpaid player to come out of this even richer yeah sure and he was originally if he gets two million dollars somewhere yeah he'll come out in the net positive yep um what the hell are the ducks doing with their rfas have they not signed any of them are they trevor zegras
Starting point is 00:41:11 oh troy terry jamie drysdale and lucas dostol are all unsigned i like dostol are they are they um arbitration uh only troy terry is arbitration eligible i was wrong about drysdale i meant fowler i keep saying drysdale i don't know why i said that my bad because you're stupid i'm an idiot no you know why because that smelling salt cleaved a hole in your brain yeah no kidding i'm still feeling the effects of that i know i know we're not the anaheim ducks podcast but like what's what's holding them up uh i look we talked about the eric carlson dam uh i don't know if we actually refer to it on the show but you know you're like what should the title be and i'm like well given the conversation let's call it the carlson dam i think the eric carlson dam is a big one
Starting point is 00:42:03 and a really important one in this league it's obviously holding up business we know the flyers are open for business they had a big deal in place with the blues that got shot down and the deal they ended up doing was very small i don't think you go from having a very big deal in place to oh it's okay we're happy with just getting rid of kevin hayes right yeah calgary has an abundance of business to do the leafs have an abundance of business to do um the sharks have eric carlson to do and the penguins and hurricanes are fighting over him as divisional rivals um and rick west had sort of reminded us yesterday uh talking about the hockey canada report at any moment that report is going to drop and as many as eight contracts could be terminated
Starting point is 00:43:02 terminated or suspended i don't know if if those issues like the eric carlson deal has an effect on the ducks giving trevor ziegers what he wants i wonder if they're going to be used as a secondary team though i do this love but they're they're under the salary cap floor why can't you give ziegers what he wants there's so much business league wide to be done that like all the teams i just mentioned who aren't the ducks the ducks could have ideas in place for what to do with those teams but those teams need an answer on x y and z before that business is even possible we haven't seen this kind of backlog this far into the summer um for quite some time like we're weeks into the off season and there are fantastic players who are available if they wait too long
Starting point is 00:43:58 they're gonna get shafted on their deals you're gonna be able to potentially get someone like matt dumba at like a fraction of what you should be able to um and like since when does the reigning norris winner ever become available ever the 100 point scoring norris of it norris winner there's there's just i don't have a read on anything that's going on and it doesn't feel like anyone does you know what i mean cj is very cryptic in the group chat he is he is very cryptic we always try to get stuff out of him and he's always very uh fortune cookie about it you're like what does that mean cj uh why don't i open another one anyway another one fascinating bit of news to drop um uh and i as i mentioned washington's got some work with kuznetsov and
Starting point is 00:44:44 mantha um a couple other stories i wanted to hit because frankly there just isn't a whole heck of a lot at this point in the summer uh hockey news is david alter along with a few other reporters caught up with mitch marner at his marner assist fan foundation golf tournament i know uh i think matthews was there neil and it was there um they've obviously been in the news because the extensions why but the big quote is i know i know both of them uh have a lot of joy and love for this team and wanted to be here this is Marner talking about Matthews and Nylander we'll see if need be I'm going to try to get involved and help help on both sides but at the same time they're my buddies before they are my teammates and I'm going to look at them as that as in he
Starting point is 00:45:23 doesn't want to uh he doesn't want to get too involved I guess the idea is they want to keep the the three together now here's where and I and I just please internet do not overreact to this It's pronounced Stephen. Here's what Marner said about Brad for a living. Brad came in and defended us all, really, and our team. It meant a lot for us that he came in and did that. It's not just four guys on our team. It's a full team effort every single night.
Starting point is 00:45:54 It's not the narrative a lot of times, but we all know we got to be better, and that's what we're excited to do when we get the season going. What does that mean? Well, I think the read for me is that I think, for whatever reason, it was really important to this group that the general manager defend them. And that maybe he meant to say something different or meant it a different way. Sometimes you're in a scrum and word doesn't come out the right way. But it clearly went a long way with the Leafs players that Shani and that Brad Treliving, specifically in this instance, believe in this group, at least in the public eye, as much as they do.
Starting point is 00:46:48 and uh that is going to be frustrating here if you're a certain subject section of least nation especially steve who is like yeah like we do believe in you um but how many times can we believe in you and you don't get it done sheldon listen you're a free man um new gm came in didn't fire you he's not gonna fire you uh but he could at any moment first game they give you that is a dog's breakfast like they did at the beginning of the season this past year you carve them and don't you dare walk it back don't you dare walk it back yeah these guys are tiring tiring yeah it's it's not yeah i think that i think there is some some positivity in the fact that
Starting point is 00:47:49 you know he would try to keep everybody together here because apparently especially with kneelander's camp they're quite far apart um you could not be more supported it's it's what gets at you a little bit we get what eats at you and then i want to ask jesse's impression because it might be completely i need to know what else he needs what else do you need let's help let's let's give you what you need what do you mean is it uh the best center this organization has ever had um is it um you know 10.9 million dollars can we can we do that for you can we walk back every criticism ever can we what do you need what do you need come on oh with it use your words
Starting point is 00:48:43 like a dad jesse how did those quotes hit you um it's weird because like you look back and you're like okay they all want to stick together and do all these things and i just can't help but shake the fact that they haven't won anything that's what it just comes down to for me like the seven years that they've all been together doing this um they've accomplished one playoff victory and i don't understand why the upper echelon of mlse brendan shanahan in particular wants to keep the group that can't win together and keep trying and trying with a bunch of guys who've proven that they can't win together and you you look up the the points he had in in tampa which i know people are screaming at the screen
Starting point is 00:49:34 right now like hey he what he finally did it do you understand because of the cap and the amount of the cap that they eat up that that's the bare minimum the bare minimum is dominance which which is why i keep arguing to break the core up because like it's just it's not tenable like it you can't do it in a league with a cap this small um i used to think you could and then the cap you know the the world went hamster huey and the gooey kablooey and you know the cap barely went up or even some years stagnated and it ruined the plan i get that i used to think that and you change with the evidence that you're given um the bare minimum is dominance um and in the regular season you make double digits it's in regular season it's inarguable right he
Starting point is 00:50:28 he was dominant he was and if you look at how he played against tampa first game three points second game three points two games three points in game one yeah that's hilarious they lost seven three yeah three assists he had three points in game two he had two points in game three he had two points in game four uh point in game five and then zero in game six when they won but then you against the florida panthers zero one zero two zero and the problem is for a guy like mitch and i'm i'm just reading mitch's stats i'm not this isn't fair to to just lump them in no mitch or austin or or willie and you have to include tavaris in that too is they can't have an off night no and i look back on game three of the florida series and like that's that's the origin story or that's
Starting point is 00:51:15 like the turning point the narrative or whatever it is for me because that effort that the game i was uh gave i was like it's over like it that's this this was your moment and that's how you show up and i'll never forget that awful awful game because of the high of the tavarez winner that clinched the series and finally we did it to what was it oh seven days later to that game three effort i'm just i was just out and on the group on yeah on this working and i was waiting for the next month two months for when you had the opportunity to break it up and then then the whole dubious fiasco happens and then true living comes in and i was like okay so they didn't do it and they're just trying this again and it just feels like did you not see what happened i just
Starting point is 00:52:05 i i get frustrated because i'm actually sitting here i you know i know i sound mad online when it comes to the kneelander negotiations and everything but i'm actually sitting here being a very patient little boy when it comes to this team tra living just got here um his surrounding group just got here i look at their current roster and i don't overreact because i know they're not done yeah i know they're not there he wants to change the decor they added klingberg where we're looking at it and like what the you know it's like uh it's like that episode of friends where they made a half trifle half shepherd's pie what the hell is this those are two delicious things but you put them together and it doesn't make any sense unless you're joey
Starting point is 00:52:48 terbiani and uh i'm i'm being very patient with them but i i get very frustrated by the idea of the narrative is unfair what is unfair they the the core four looks at the outside world and says that the way you guys paint this picture is unfair to us what you're saying what is unfair is uh giving the rest of the team uh no cap space and expecting them to pull the same weight as you that's what's unfair like oh yeah it's a whole team it's a group effort i know that but like we're we're making a house out of out of fucking sticks and hay and shit and we're we're trying spending first round picks and going out and getting these tougher guys who do the things that you guys don't really do um oh it's you know i thought he was off social media what does he know
Starting point is 00:53:50 about the narrative i think they're aware no it's not his camp it's not his camp getting in his ear is it you're doing so good and then you have to go and be all sarcastic no listen i understand why they want to keep this together like i understand why the players keep this together but the thing is the thing is is that you have to in especially pro sports you kind of have to earn that yeah and it wasn't that they you know everybody's thrilled that they got to the second round great but they went out like a bomb in the second round it was so bad i was gobsmacked i remember i gotta go back and watch my own stream uh from game three because they're in overtime of game three and i was very aware of
Starting point is 00:54:41 okay if they lose this game series is over yes but if they win this game i think they win the series like i earnestly that when they lost game one it was like the best i'd felt after a leaf loss in the playoffs ever yeah um i really did think they'd be okay they had a chance to be in it they you know sam reinhardt scores that goal and i'm like oh fuck it's over yeah it's over yeah that should that should have been the end of this whole trial this way i looked at and i sat there like it should have been this experiment failed and we should admit it because look at what happened to this team especially with how game three the played out and none of that happened and now we got to move forward with it with them yeah being upset at the media and and uh yeah and
Starting point is 00:55:32 listen well uh people like us will get painted and i'm i will be subtweeted about it and you know whatever but it's it it is like listen i don't i think anybody can can agree that that a sports is a results-based business it's not a process it's it is not a process-based business as much as the leafs have always tried to make it about the process that's their job our job as fans is to think about the results you're adam hold still and what is it no i thought i you don't look anything like matthew kachuk i don't understand why people are mistaking you for matthew what you mean and like no you don't look like sam bennett either like you're you're what's taking him down well you're what's taking him down yeah i think i think that you're what's giving the
Starting point is 00:56:16 leafs a hard time to i don't really there's no one on the bruins it really looks like or the habs or the blue jackets or the capitals or the bruins again there are the lighting that one time a desire uh that has been i'm so sick there's a there's been a thing I'm so sick of it. Fucking win something. Yeah. Our job is to look at the results. I'm over it.
Starting point is 00:56:39 And the results, I don't think anybody can disagree. The results are just not plainly there. They're just not there. It's ridiculous we even have to argue that. It's childish. Yep. I'm so sick of it. There are certain sections that are going to be really mad at you.
Starting point is 00:56:52 How dare you? He's trying to keep them together. Steve, what's wrong with you? Two and two equals four, no matter what. Okay. All right. There you go. Last thing.
Starting point is 00:57:02 gonna you're not gonna massage yourself into being right about this so we'll see what happens this summer and when we do come back and i'm sure we'll be back before uh september like first off we got videos coming out and we'll talk a little bit about what what the plan is for this summer for the channel and that sort of thing too because if you think that content's just gonna stop it's not um but you know when we're back to our regular three shows a week in september i think it's gonna be fascinating to see what this roster looks like it will look a lot different and i'm really excited and listen just like you all of us cheer for these players we all want them to succeed you know the i think the thing is and and this gets frustrating is like we are
Starting point is 00:57:41 funny by certain members of leaf station it's uh it's uh you guys aren't least fans enough and then by uh by people like fans of other teams are like they should only talk about these they don't know shit about any other team and you're like okay well you know you can't win with either side but I would say this I think that means we do a good job I cheer for these guys I cheer for these players I would go out and get a Mitch Marner or Austin Matthews or William Nylander John Tavares jersey tomorrow they can't get away from and the Leafs can't gaslight me into the fact that they are the core of this team it does matter how they do and the Leafs win or lose based on how those players play when Marner scored the game winner in game four against the Panthers I wasn't
Starting point is 00:58:20 like fucking boo i wish it was someone else he's a leaf no i want him to succeed yeah absolutely i want him to stop giving a shit about the narrative that is a really good point that's a really good point i'd love him to stop giving a shit about the narrative is i'd like everyone around him to start giving a shit about the narrative i'd i'd just go out there and win and if you win one cup one cup no one will remember these seven years happened yeah you'll get maybe they will you'll be or it'll be part of the story it'll make the story better ah like there there are you know the stories of true dominance you know michael jordan and the bulls and everything like that and then there's the story of this team who couldn't fucking get it done and then they
Starting point is 00:59:13 He finally did. I mean, isn't that the Michael Jordan story? You could argue it is. I, like, I'm too young to know unsuccessful Michael Jordan. Yeah. That's what I learned from watching that documentary. I was like, oh, I didn't know he lost a bunch of times. Let's make it about hockey for a second.
Starting point is 00:59:31 It took Mario Lemieux five years to make the playoffs. Yeah. And, oh, yeah, I wonder, I would love to go back and see some newspaper articles. Like, yeah, sure, you can put up seven points a night, but is he any good? yeah yeah exactly well and that's i don't know and you look at it like the like the here's the thing the difference about lemuse penguins versus like not making the playoffs now is like seven teams missed back then you could be well under 500 and still make the playoffs there was only 21 of them so 16 of 21 make the fucking playoffs and lemuse penguins were so bad they couldn't do it
Starting point is 01:00:02 for five years how about you know that's a young team that finally grew into success what about a team that looked like they were cooked and they didn't win until their star had every hair on his head and face be completely gray with uh ovechkin in the cap yeah we thought they lost in 2017 we went that's it he's never winning one and he got one the next fucking year too next fucking year yeah um okay so jesse i sent you a video yeah why do you want to talk about the uh in season i just thought so there's an nba in-season tournament happening this year okay and soccer does this all the time uh hockey purists would be like but it's not the 82 game schedule but what i like about it is it actually creates something worth playing for early on because here's the thing that always
Starting point is 01:00:53 gets me man like the you know players come out the teams are like oh well it's it's it's early days it's early days it's too early to judge the team uh if they play like shit and the leafs always starts low um and and people are like you know when you get on them about people like it's too early that's not even a valid argument i'm like okay so when is not too early what i like about vegas is it's or about this nba in-season tournament is there something to play for right away so you can't give me that bullshit line that it's not that it's too early um and uh so i want to play this video because first off i love the way the nba hypes shit up uh if this was the nhl doing it would be fucking gary betman at um you know on a white background uh this the way that
Starting point is 01:01:34 they promo this tell me you can't you could not get excited and could not get up for this this is hockey here you go all right everybody the nba first ever in-season tournament is now official but how does it work like this first up is group play all 30 teams will be split into six groups Three from the east, three from the west, with a random draw based on last year's regular season records. Each team in a group plays each other one time. A total of four games, two at home, two on the road. Now, those games happen Tuesdays and Fridays in November,
Starting point is 01:02:11 so set your calendar. Basically, these regular season NBA games also count as tournament games. Now, in each group, the team with the best group play record after those four games, they're moving on. The team with the next best record in each conference, those two are the wild cards. Always watch out for the wild cards. Now, we get to the knockout round.
Starting point is 01:02:33 Eight teams, single elimination, and you know what that means. Win and move on or lose, and you're out. And the last four teams standing, guess what? You're headed to Vegas, baby. That's right. In Las Vegas, the semifinal battles will get us to the championship game on December 9th. Two teams in a winner-take-all final to be named champion and be awarded the first ever NBA Cup.
Starting point is 01:03:02 Come on now. Look, there's a lot to look forward to this season. Players on new teams, rookies new to the league, and teams just looking to make some noise. And the NBA End-Season Tournament is going to be a can't-miss, must-see, high-stakes, high-level competition. And if you're a hoops head just like me, I promise you, you're gonna love it.
Starting point is 01:03:22 first of all that's a freaking fantastic video good promo really really good video second people are going to clown on this and say they don't care until their team wins they're there it's the second your team wins a game you're gonna feel really good about it and once you've won that one game why not win the whole thing the other thing is um there's money on the line for the players so they care and these are regular season games that already count but what i like about it is it takes in a regular season game it takes a hamburger and it elevates it oh this is a hamburger with wagyu beef and you're probably less likely to get a player who or buy a ticket to a game where a player is resting yes yes ideally and and then of course
Starting point is 01:04:11 where do they have it vegas yes they have the fun part in vegas um which one thing i was confused about and maybe he mentioned it and i missed it they're regular season games that are just handed extra meat meaning but the final four have to play dirt so they're extra games interesting yeah i thought that was one of the most fascinating parts is that the tuesdays and thursday games on the nba calendar starting from november through december when you get to the semi-finals are now double games because they count for the nba cup and now they can't for the regular season which just kind of cool well and like if i'm one of the fans that has to choose between like nhl or nba i mean it's basically i mean what what are you gonna watch are you gonna watch regular season
Starting point is 01:05:03 anything versus playoff anything you're probably picking playoff or a lot of fans are a bunch you are listening to this right now and going no i'm gonna do hockey all the time which i totally understand but i mean even if you watch your team play you gotta be tuning in to at least the fourth quarter of this game that means something it's the playoffs in november that's what i like about it though is that it like i said hamburgers are great right that's why i use hamburger yeah yeah but like you've taken something that's great good regular season game love that and you've elevated it you've now put high-end ingredients on it i'm excited it's more to play for november's like underratedly a bit of a dead zone too until american thanksgiving like the regular the
Starting point is 01:05:49 regular season games are obviously in full effect like it's it's a busy time but it's all regular um then you're gonna randomly have all these games that have a little extra meaning you're generating conversation heading into like you said american thanksgiving heading into december 9th that's when a lot of students are probably finishing up their exams i could see this working in the nhl i i would pick a different month so right because because we live the nhl news cycle yeah we know that there's a bit of a lull from january through january february yeah february is really tough in the nhl calendar because like especially if you're in a situation like the lease were in last season where it was wrapped up by december who
Starting point is 01:06:36 they're gonna play jazz you know and like that they were just sitting there in that spot in the division it was kind of they have the team together there was no major injuries and then we finally got to like trade deadline things got interesting to ramp back up but like this creates a news cycle for the nba during a portion of the season where it's kind of a lull like yeah for the nba you got to get till christmas day christmas day is kind of where the nba kind of ramps up because you get the big matchup on on christmas and you get the teams going everybody kind of starts talking about the nba again but when the nfl is going on the nba is kind of secondary now you know and it's all nfl all the time and now there's a little bit more reason to care about the nf uh the nba early
Starting point is 01:07:17 december you're gonna get this cool new thing in vegas it's single elimination it's knockout it's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out i wonder if it's gonna work for them long term i I think if I were the NHL, I would try right away in October. I know as fans, why January, February makes some sense. But heading into the trade deadline, you're going to want to protect your guys. And there's also the all-star in there. If I was the NHL, I'd start right away. I also really like that.
Starting point is 01:07:42 You're right. I do like a start right away. That's interesting. And I think when a band plans a concert, an artist plans a concert, they come out with a bang. The first couple songs are key to any concert. what they with the group opens with whatever it is those are like the ones that grab you and then they'll you see two three songs in the pace slows down they'll go into their longer stuff some of their back catalog and then up up up up up and the up up up up in this case is the trade
Starting point is 01:08:08 deadline yes and what i what i would love is to see some of these teams that are expected to be really really good to like win the cup at the end of the year but they're not they're they're kind of discombobulated in october right they're not they don't have it together yet and maybe they get maybe they get beaten by some team that doesn't even make the playoffs or maybe we get a pre-stanley cup matchup in october that's a knockout round and then we see it again later on in the playoffs what a story it just creates more storylines which is good yeah anything wrong with more things to win i wonder how much it's getting more money to fans and players and teams like do we see um that team rest a guy because it's like second night of a back-to-back or like he's he's
Starting point is 01:08:51 he has an injury but he could power through if it was the playoffs but is he gonna power through if it's the nba cup what's the name of the commissioner stern david stern no that's the adam silver adam silver sorry david stern was the previous yes my bad uh adam silver i think would have them killed but no i'm not talking about like you benched the guy but like a lingering injury that you usually sit out in december now are you sitting it out right yeah but i think because you rest the guy first of all the visual is terrible second of all you're going to be asked about it and if they go yeah well you know it doesn't really mean anything i think you'd have them killed like they're they're trying to make this a thing don't water down and dismiss the
Starting point is 01:09:32 thing like i said it's july and you're thinking about this right now going yeah i don't know if i give a shit um the second the second your team wins their first game and is in it oh yeah the second your team has a shot at it yeah i think you're gonna get i'd also love to see guys like torts and babcock be like yeah we don't care and then win and then celebrate oh they better care yeah they would just be like fart uh like why don't you understand that part of your job is to sell your product don't be like yeah i don't you know whatever it's another fucking no no it's not another fucking you have a game to play no tournament to win no yeah so watching watching the video one question i had was so they have the group play throughout november if they're the
Starting point is 01:10:24 regular season games they're all lined up and then they're going to be the group play and blah blah blah but then you get to the um eight team tournament part yep and the only games that are outside of regular season games are the semi-final games so it's like how do the quarter finals games work if single elimination and whatever the week of december uh fourth everybody in the league has a tbd game on their schedule so the the 2023-24 regular season schedule is out but not all of the games are booked because they're gonna place those teams who are playing in the quarterfinals versus each other in that week and then everybody else can just play uh all the other teams that the 22 teams that are eliminated you know so they're still
Starting point is 01:11:13 regular season games but they haven't been scheduled yet because they need to know who's going to match up in the tournament to schedule the regular season games that week love that and it's it's it's just a fascinating little way to treat this league it feels more it's just you're they're being really adventurous about it and it's it's really fun you have to at least see if this works yeah listen if it bombs and bombs but i just think it's fun yeah it's just fun it's fun it's a really fun idea that i would like to see succeed and if it does succeed i would like the nhl to uh copy it immediately at the end of the day sports are games and games are based on gimmicks and rules that we just make up as we go along it's the playoffs are a gimmick you ever oh that
Starting point is 01:11:52 sounds gimmicky what do you think you're watching it's all it's all gimmicks it's not because 82 is a set number that means something it doesn't mean shit yeah they just play 60 in the 50s we don't know just because somebody made up a gimmick in 1950 doesn't mean we can't now make up a gimmick in 2023 no we have to stay with black and white television we cannot we can change the gimmicks of the past the uh i mean soccer doesn't seem to have a problem with handing out like three trophies every year no you know why because uh the more you play the more money you make it's cool they do pretty well you get to get to win how great is that um i just want to say this to you the Leafs have acquired Caulfield.
Starting point is 01:12:29 Which one? Brock Caulfield, his older brother. The better one. I also want to throw out there that Dom Ducharme, Jeff, is now a assistant coach with the Championship Vegas Golden Knights, which is perplexing because
Starting point is 01:12:45 if you remember, a lot of Canadiens fans, and I agree with them, Dom Ducharme's coaching of Cole Caulfield cost him the Calder that year. Well, you know, might have saved the Habs a few dollars. Caulfield had one goal and eight points in 29 games under Ducharme. And then when Marty St. Louis took over midway through the season,
Starting point is 01:13:07 Caulfield scored in his first game and had 22 goals and 35 points in 38 games to finish the year. Crazy. I was going back through that article that we were supposed to go through and never got to. Oh, I'm surprised you remember that. M.A. Godin from The Athletic. and uh what is some of the quotes in it or did you read it yeah you finally did it
Starting point is 01:13:29 some of the you read i told you two summers ago or whatever it was oh my god like okay just let me just let me just drop this sentence on you knowing what cole caulfield has become and this is not a quote this is just godan writing the fact that alex uh belzeal was given more ice time than cole caulfield in an nhl game is another way to look at how ducharme navigated the waters on one hand you have an ahl veteran who works extremely hard on the other you have an nhl rookie who looks completely disoriented wow so let me just that's cole caulfield yeah uh just to give you an idea alex belzeal played 31 games for the rangers this year um that's this is where they were at it was such a mess um damn here's what godin was really
Starting point is 01:14:23 intense about this yeah i tried to get you to read it two years ago when ducharme was fired the canadians looked dysfunctional with no cohesion no success and not even competitiveness as soon as st louis took over the comedians found their stride yeah um players who were in season long slumps rose up from the ashes there listen there's two sides to like every sports argument everyone was united on what the fuck are you doing with cole but i but here's what i want to throw out there yeah i said all the way to the finals that this guy was a bad coach yeah and i that's the one damn thing that i was right about and every round they won you look more ridiculous yeah they kept winning and has anybody flamed out faster than this guy in the nhl he's with vegas
Starting point is 01:15:02 and as a head coach i'm talking about and he's joining uh and this is what i don't understand why so it's interesting i want to talk about this particular quote because he was upset midway through that season that he coached montreal you have to remember that bergevin was not fired but resigned yeah but he was fired he was told to resign that's what i think it was very on um and he said you know the side of it that hurts uh or that's most disappointing to me is not having the chance to sit down with ken hughes and um jeff gorton and tell them how i saw hockey if the plan was to lose the most games we could and to play the young players i would have liked to have known because i have had uh i had i would have had a different approach with them i was
Starting point is 01:15:45 trying to squeeze as much as i could everywhere to try and get some results i saw teams with games canceled because four or five guys got covid we had 10 uh and another eight who were injured and we still played you have cold cough use your head now if you have if you want open conversations with management vegas ain't for you we know how that management very true we know how that management group talks uh but if you want to avoid young players vegas is for you vegas is for you uh and then he says looking back there might have been some small adjustments asked if he was going to do anything differently small adjustments that i would have made but not an enormous amount in this league there are maybe five ways to play i would have played the best goal scorer in the
Starting point is 01:16:24 organization you see the style of the islanders under barry trotz or colorado style or edmonton style it depends on your personnel but we couldn't uh open up the floodgates there are some things that i would have done differently maybe in the neutral zone uh but i'll do it differently in my next challenge or or depending upon what kind of personnel i have um it seems obvious that ducharme sees no fault in the system he ran or the communication skills he had while coaching the canadians um sounds stubborn enough to be an nhl coach and then jeff petrie actually gave him some criticism in pittsburgh ducharme says he has no regrets of the one-year experience behind the canadians bench um and but he does regret how much time he was given to do that job it was an
Starting point is 01:17:04 opportunity for me to establish myself you see coaches today they stay a while and then they move on it's important to establish yourself and i really didn't have time to do that he was also i feel like not really ever supposed to be the long-term head coach there and he was signed they extended him because he went to the finals well and also he was head coach at such a odd time like yeah covet yeah during covet yeah bubble and and everything like that and you're also uh how dare you glossing over a uh our neighbor getting uh hired by them as well joel ward oh yeah oh yeah yeah oh let's go award well uh uh specifically ducharme i think i mean he was an assistant coach with the canadians so i could see this he's had success in junior and i want to
Starting point is 01:17:52 stress this he's not a bad guy people like you hate him i don't hate him no you hate him as a person disagree with the way he coaches i think everything i think most of the things that he did uh as a coach were bad i think he rode a unbeatable carry price and the last blood from a stone minutes from a an aging Shea Weber Shea Weber put literally the rest of his NHL career into that effort yeah and try to win a cup and Phil Deneau was amazing Corey Perry was amazing um guys that you just wouldn't have expected it from I put very little of that if you can't beat the goalie uh it doesn't matter how good or bad the coach is you're gonna win and I think I think at the end of the day with Ducharme I wish him all the best because people are like what do you think what do you
Starting point is 01:18:39 thing but i think he's a i don't think he's an nhl coach i just don't and and ironically though so i've talked about how tavaris doesn't go down the leafs win that series uh if the habs don't get cole caulfield like two weeks before the season's done they don't win it they don't win it and he didn't even play the first two or three games that series uh and i was like i was on this podcast going why aren't they playing cool caulfield yeah and then they lost game one which i think we all give him a mulligan for but we were like ah he wasted one of those games and then fucking game five he was unbelievable so listen i i don't know why vegas felt like they needed to but if communications but you're after dumb that's not what vegas management does wish you the best

Starting point is 01:19:58 The Steve Dangle Press Conference. can i add a little wrinkle to a story we were talking about do it yeah yeah sure so for tony d'angelo cap friendly goes tony d'angelo is the first player to be bought out more than once and then it links to his page i thought it was vinny well someone correctly goes oliver eckman larson dion finoff ryan spooner were all bought out twice and cap friendly says no it appears that way on the history page but you will notice one of each is flagged as retained salary the buyout fees were split between two teams because the contract had salary retained in a prior trade so i guess basically the semantics of it is he was bought out solely by
Starting point is 01:20:42 the rangers and then bought out solely by the flyers wow and he's gonna get another job it's weird it's definitely a weird one that is weird yep i thought it was vinnie le cavalier I thought it was Vinny LeCavalier as well. Because it was, he signed with Philadelphia after Tampa, and I thought Philadelphia bought him out, and then he signed in Chicago. But it might have spread over several times. Must have.
Starting point is 01:21:09 I always side with Cap Friendly on this shit. Well, yeah, I'm not going to dispute them. I just, that's where I kind of thought that. So, Jesse, go ahead. All right, let's start with Marlene. Marlene Anne 8 on Twitter says, My son Steve is getting married in September. What?
Starting point is 01:21:24 Do you have any advice for the newlyweds? steve and camille he listens to every one of your podcasts first of all congratulations steve second of all adam and steve do you have advice for the newlyweds well well you've had more than one so you go with experience kind of set that up see it work and i've seen it not work yeah so adam what's the advice for success did you see the person tweeted you earlier that the blues signed dalibor devorski no did that no i didn't see that we had the devorski joke uh the other day that's hilarious yeah no uh okay so um i think that um i think the main thing man is just to be kind to each other when it's really going against your
Starting point is 01:22:16 your uh like no matter what no matter who you're with they're gonna frustrate you from time to time yeah and sometimes it's gonna feel like if i if i say something sharp back and i'm not talking about calling names or swearing even or whatever but you just you know you know sometimes you get a little yeah yeah i will tell you that 10 times out of 10 it doesn't work the way you think it will and you're back oh fair point i get it glad you brought it up and i feel like you know uh that that taking a minute and and in a in a tense situation don't be afraid to say to your partner hey i need about 10 minutes to just cool off and process this before we can have a constructive conversation just give me a few minutes and any good partner should be able to do that uh and then
Starting point is 01:23:08 And then go at it in a way that so that there's not like that lingering hurt afterwards. You can't avoid that forever. But I do feel like, you know, as I've gotten older and had mountains of therapy, the one thing I will say is that when things get heated and passionate, and they will, the best thing you can do to go through it is to take a breather and never react on your impulses. Never react on your impulse. Not act on your impulses. React.
Starting point is 01:23:35 That's my key. my key is ignore all that fight fire with fire head on burn the house down figuratively yeah no um yeah adam adam nailed it there's there's nothing wrong with going yeah i need a minute i need a moment um be very attentive of the um needs and struggles of the other um i got into the probably sometimes annoying habit uh i think it was shortly after my nona died of saying i love you every time i leave the house every single time because you never know when it'll be the last time and i know that's dark but whatever say it often and mean it all the time um one-on-one conversations are key and that might sound like stupid and obvious device uh
Starting point is 01:24:34 advice but um it's a busy world and it's uh amazing how seldomly those can come about especially when kids become part of the picture oh yeah um because so much of your life uh just becomes about the kids and for the wedding um i got fantastic advice um that i did and loved it and highly recommend it your wedding day is an important day to be selfish generally speaking you should not be selfish but on your wedding day you should be a little selfish and by selfish i mean the collective self of you and your partner um you are if if anyone's bickering you know you got to worry about the tables or whatever you let them know you're adults and that is not my business on my wedding day um get the hellos and everything be very
Starting point is 01:25:42 cordial and grateful to everyone who comes get that out of the way early get it out of the way before dinner um so that everyone feels welcome and then you know that that's the part of your night that is selfless right you give yourself to people and then it's all about you and your wife it's a party for you and your partner um everyone is there to celebrate you yeah you know what i mean um i i love steve's and eat i love steve's in-laws i love uh mrs dangle's parents uh they're two of my favorite people every time i see them like god i wish i saw them more and uh your father-in-law at your wedding said never let a son set on an argument great advice great don't go to bed mad i mean you'll go to bed mad but work it out in bed work it out hell yeah
Starting point is 01:26:30 yeah no but like work it out before you go to sleep don't wake up still mad that's my point yeah uh that's we were way too long on that but jesse what about you you've been in a relationship a really long time you've lived with your partner for two years i think we just said we've been way too long on that i want to get oh he's not gonna talk about it fine no i think we should get in more than one question all right it's been seven it's been like six minutes all right i got a dm from robin uh about our last episode when we talked about sweden robin says hey dude love the pod i'm from richmond hill but i've been playing hockey in sweden for the better part of the last 10 years excited to see you guys in stockholm yeah i just wanted to mention i played hockey
Starting point is 01:27:15 in a town 20 minutes minutes from almhut where the first ikea is and cracked up how you guys talked about wanting to go there and saying it must be a tourist attraction i can confirm to you that it is just a completely normal ikea oh nothing to see there but if you guys want suggestions on things to see and eat in sweden feel free to reach out absolutely absolutely i want so i don't give a shit about the ikea yeah you are so down it's a store it's a furniture jesse we gotta go like i can't even bring home the things that they offer jesse i want a chair i want to see it no it's the first i'm gonna get you a fruit and dude a fruit and that's when we get to that and it's gonna be the size of your house because i want to eat swedish meatballs
Starting point is 01:28:04 in the first Ikea. Why does it got to be the first? They offer those in Sweden. They offer them here at the fake Ikeas that aren't the real one, the first one. Is Jysk Finnish or Swedish? I don't know what that is.
Starting point is 01:28:20 Jysk is a home goods store. It's almost like Bed Bath & Beyond, but Jysk. It's got a duck as its logo. It feels like it should be called Ikea. There's one in Ajax. Why are we talking about that? I don't know. don't you go to the first just i want to go to the first what's that have to do with anything all right this is from adam steiner uh do you guys plan on coaching your kids sports team
Starting point is 01:28:43 just is danish by the way uh is it coaching my kids sports teams steven uh no no um no i mean if i'm asked to i guess the x's and o's aren't uh paramount like coaching i don't know nobody is gonna approach you to do it i think it's a volunteer position that you would have we need steve dangle for these six-year-olds i think uh somebody for the td bank ajax house league team we need steve uh i think you would have to put your name down on the list i think i don't know if they're able to get sponsors as big as td so so you're saying you're worried that you wouldn't be able to maybe perhaps teach them in the same way i didn't play it right but right um i don't know my dad was the assistant coach i would feel weird about it not as a dad like i'd be happy to
Starting point is 01:29:34 help out as a dad i'd feel uh i'd feel like there would be other dads who would want to do it more and do a better job right so you don't want to do it that's not what i said i just said the opposite of that if you were listening i think i think if you want to do it i think you should go out of your way to learn to do it and then do it all right now i'm going all the way in on whatever my daughter does as much as i can obviously we have a business to run so there's going to be some constraints on that but um my my kid is not athletically inclined to this point except for swimming she loves to swim so she may go further than that but at sitting at four years old it was a good swim the thing that she cares about the most are musicals uh that's all she cares about
Starting point is 01:30:21 she wants to sing she wants to dance she wants so we got her signed up for musical musical theater in the fall uh at a little studio just up the street and i will be at all those dance recitals i can't teach her i can't be her dance coach but i can i can applaud with the best no you didn't retain the grapevine lessons that we got in grade seven gym oh we didn't get that at my school we didn't get dance schools yeah we didn't get any of that jesse did you have to learn to dance in school not really no kind of depending on like what you got like when i was like six or something we kind of had grade seven oh no not that far involved no wow it was one of the first things in my education where i was like none of us are going to retain any of this is pointless
Starting point is 01:31:05 we're just wasting our time this is gonna be useless for the rest of our life i hate it when they ruin gym class for shit like that oh yeah we're gonna dance it dude i'd rather run laps fuck off yeah i think if if i had a kid and they were like i don't know under 10 i could coach a pretty good nine-year-old baseball team i think you'd be i think i could i think i could coach the the mississauga twins to the championship but you like played sports at a pretty high level though right yeah but when i was a kid what if you coach further east so that leo could participate he's got a great arm go out to go to fucking ajax yeah or or no i'll just i'll be like one of the hyper-competitive parents in
Starting point is 01:31:45 Ontario. Forge divorce papers. Pretend like he lives somewhere that he doesn't and get him onto your team. Oh no, he's in this school district. There you go. You have a friend who lives in the neighborhood. He lives there. I think I coach
Starting point is 01:32:01 a pretty good nine-year-old baseball team. This is from Moist Jawa. Terrible. Terrible and we're all worse for having heard your name. um where does willie play game one in toronto against with the opposing team no i'm kidding who do they play on opening night yeah no i think willie i think it's the habs well okay even if
Starting point is 01:32:27 willie walks next year i was thinking about this the other day how can you not have william kneelander on your roster at 6.9 million dollars it just doesn't make sense unless you got a crazy amount of prospects coming back uh or or somebody can help you right away uh william kneelander at 6.9 million dollars you'd be better just just let him play it's too much value yeah way too much for a team that's cap strap yeah they're that currently they're the team that's the most over the cap in the entire nhl right now they need william nylander at this number the leafs are the most over the cap yeah they're at 92 million sick steve do you agree you have a interesting answer um the best outcome is he stays a leaf and sees reason um you're not a 10 and a quarter
Starting point is 01:33:17 million dollar player but doesn't mean he can't play here the question was who's he playing for next year game one what's he what's the answer steve uh toronto there you go i'll get so i'm giving you toronto or 31 other teams you're taking toronto oh man are you taking the field no one's got any fucking space we're seeing nhl players get terminate their contracts no one's got any space he's gonna play here it's not a lot what do you mean 6.9 million dollars it's not a lot no yeah but it's because jesse we all know that he's good value on his current contract but he's being a silly goose about his next one get better advice okay we're all in agreement toronto my place easily uh this one's from
Starting point is 01:34:00 bucca di beep boop okay oh it's my uncle uh bucca di beepo i wasn't lying i don't i'm positive that means something in italian i'm gonna google it nice for calder not likely no i thought that was a trade and i'm like you who is like your head i am not trading anyone for nice um i listen i would put a couple bucks on him at the beginning of the year just in case like conor bedard doesn't get out to the yeah like yeah it's not nuts no it's not because okay here's why it's not nuts and i know people are gonna laugh bedard is a better player he's a phenom like we get it but that's not what it's about necessarily and fantilli as well leo carlson um man there's some really really good players
Starting point is 01:34:57 but don't forget all the last year's draft picks who are going to be entering the league this year exactly but nice is gonna walk probably walk on to the potentially first line of a team that finish fifth last year which is a crazy opportunity he's gonna walk on to potentially at you know the way it's looking right now um if it's not tyler bertuzzi playing with matthews and marner it'll very likely be nice now if he doesn't get that opportunity yeah i have a very difficult time seeing him winning the calder this is a lot more reasonable question than it appears on the surface yeah i could see him finishing top three in calder voting like how good like i think he could be like the 12th best rookie next year uh and win the calder just because of the opportunity that may
Starting point is 01:35:52 be afforded to him then you just might rack up a bunch of points so that you have to vote for him or something like bedard's bedard's gonna walk onto the blackhawks and it's not gonna be like here's this amazing support staff it's gonna be like save us right and it's just not the same at all who's gonna have the better career i mean bedard probably he should be putting up 100 points every year um you know just because of how good he is but nye's winning the calder there's a chance i don't think he's gonna beat out for the actual calder but i think he might finish be a nominee not top three i think it's reasonable for nice even in the conversation as we approach the trade deadline like oh yeah he's like fifth or yeah yeah that's interesting i like that um this is
Starting point is 01:36:36 from pink rain 88 if you had a personalized license plate what would it say no no i hate those yell man 69 i don't know that's 69 420 i like that yeah man it's too long but still good uh dgl yell man yeah yeah no that's enough characters yeah yeah man yeah oh man i was trying to think of what what would the abbreviation be for dangled don't key i want to identify that my car is mine but also please don't key it you know i i would be fathead just because i think and everybody does he have a fat head so i think it'd be funny sure it wouldn't be wild thing no no i'd have to kick my own ass that would be terrible yeah i used to see and i did i used
Starting point is 01:37:36 to take the go train every day when i went to ryerson uh uh take the go train and then i walked the path up to up to tmu now sorry it's not ryerson anymore um and then when i would drive or take the bus to the go station uh one of the cars in the parking lot had the license plate blake and i was always so jealous because that's the only license plate on ontario that could have blank on the back of it i was like ah that should be my license plate so i'd like i'd like to steal that one day from that person what about f fck trdu little fuck trudeau license plate what about that i like that you need people to know where you stand politically like i'm not
Starting point is 01:38:20 voting for that guy by the way i'm sick of seeing fuck probably have stickers people got to knock it off yeah there's so many yeah there's so many they gotta knock it off all right jesse any others although you could also get a green car and just pull and then and then the the uh like let's say it's an aston martin jesse oh yeah you buy yourself an aston martin and it's green british racing green and you could you could write go train on the back the license that'd be funny that'd be that's funny as shit man that'd be great let's go trains are green and then i mean it's gonna cost way more than it should yes of course of course and never get you there in time ever ever and don't you dare forget to swipe off otherwise we're gonna charge you the entire
Starting point is 01:39:06 fm ride i think you should get a sticker of calvin from calvin and hobbs peeing on your least favorite team's logo you have to have a pickup to have that you can't have that that's they don't put that on a honda civic they put that on like steve yeah you're very good at describing certain individual every car in oshawa my question was going to be but you already answered it do you live amongst a lot of these people i i will say since the move i couldn't help but notice there are so many there are so many fewer canadian flags on cars yeah ajax is a lot less patriotic in oshawa uh i guess we can end here um this is i sorry i used to have a neighbor who had a sticker that said my brakes work fine how's your insurance this big big bumper sticker community
Starting point is 01:40:00 yeah uh we could end here with mcfarland 19 any big plans for the summer no actually i don't yeah i don't have anything are you going anywhere jesse i am going a couple places uh going to be in Muskoka for a weekend oh and then I'm gonna be in Newark New Jersey for a surprise with Steve Dangle that's right yeah that'll be fun Adam doesn't want to join us I can't join he can't that's gonna be exciting you guys are gonna have some fun I'm gonna be we just looked at and we're gonna do it we're gonna be on an island for a little bit oh which island like a week which island there's lots of islands in the world is it a hot island is it a cold island you guys you guys ready to be jealous yeah caribbean asia you guys ready europe the bahamas
Starting point is 01:40:50 so that'll be fun good for you guys don't have any plans adam you're gonna live at the cottage uh yeah i'm gonna be at my my uh wife's family's cottage i'm gonna be mooching all summer um married into a cottage yeah i did i married into a cottage and it's nice so i'm gonna be doing that work smarter not harder kids exactly um and you know i think we should probably talk about too what's going on with the channel because obviously before i do that steve you always uh go away to a cottage every year yes yeah because last year you were going away to your cottage and you booked it in the middle of free agency oh right this year are you doing do you remember that and steve's like do i have to do anything this week can i go away to the cottage because i forgot it was later
Starting point is 01:41:37 than it usually is yeah um dumbass are you going up again this year we uh we rented i think it's a different one um and uh a bunch of our friends not you guys fuck off are uh are gonna join us and they have a kayak so maybe maybe i'll bring well sorry maybe i'll ask one of the people coming who has a truck if they can bring mine so then we can have two guys so you lied when you said you weren't doing anything you're going up to you're going to caughty for like a you're going to caughty for a week there's something in there and you're and you're gonna go caughty and kayak that's a fun little excursion in the summer bring leo in the kayak that's what he calls it i uh yeah he told me recently i was like do you remember
Starting point is 01:42:30 going in the kayak last year he's got a crazy memory he's like we saw a duck and a frog and beaver we did we saw a beaver you ever seen a beaver i haven't yes i have i asked jesse never seen one i've seen a beaver lives in ontario my whole life never seen a beaver um okay adam you want to talk about the channel yeah yeah yeah uh listen i uh i think um like first off we want to say thanks for a great year um it's been it's been spectacular for the network um thank you for supporting all the new content um new shows you know obviously tim is going to continue with nailing the apex so if you're a race fan um all summer long he's got a bunch of stuff from the honda indie here in toronto uh going up on the channel over the weekend um the other thing
Starting point is 01:43:17 is um i've got videos and steve do you have videos that you're working on with true in the next couple weeks uh nothing hardcore planned but like i'm gonna be making probably more summer content than i usually do which is very little um got some projects i'm working on i'm just not allowed to tell you about yet um but i will be able to soon and you know like we've talked about on the last few podcasts there's just unfinished business um around the league and with the leafs and everything so i'm gonna be making reactions to that i was expecting like a one sentence answer there i am amazed how often on the steve dangle podcast i am told i'm speaking too much i'm on steve's side with this that was a fair answer it wasn't even that long answer it wasn't
Starting point is 01:44:09 even that long it was good steve it's okay jesse even thinks yeah if this guy hates what i'm not piling on to steve's words you know you're in the wrong you know i love dumping on a steve dangle A tirade If Jesse could This would just be A 90 minute show Of the three of us Sitting around texting
Starting point is 01:44:27 But What? I spoke And he actually thought It was spellable That was a good one Okay so Oh yeah
