i thought we were better than this um jesse i have sent you a video clip and i want you to freeze frame it right at the spot and you know the spot trust me when i show you now i want to know uh no it's not that one we will get to that i thought that was the one um uh this one is um uh this one is uh the goaltender oh this one's more lighthearted yeah but but steven obviously you had a shorter video last night which i thought was interesting as a as a perennial watcher uh i was kind of looking at that going okay that's a bit of a shorter video does that mean the fuse was also shorter um well it's it's funny because you can't be at a 10 every video right so boston was a 10 or like a 9 or a 10 and the reason the next video

was also a 9 or a 10 is because they talked all this shit about being different and then they weren't right yeah the tampa game was on route to being a 10 and then they win and you know it's happy you can't be there every video so then they play like their fourth consecutive shitty game right like they were down 4-1 um ah you can't be there every fucking game so i was just focusing on the guilty parties like i remember how i said mid-season arrives quickly yeah i mean we know who's good we know who's bad we know who's bad has the potential to be good yeah we know who's good has the potential to be bad clingbird across the board trash camp i don't know what to do with that player he was fine last year and he's getting to be unplayable uh i just i couldn't help but

laugh so frank corrado who is quickly becoming a star in this business uh he did one of his macbook breakdowns about uh the leafs uh fourth line being on the ice for a goal that would have been a great alternate name for your lfrs by the way macbook breakdown macbook breakdown and for a different reason yeah macbook breaking down um because it was old and sounded like a motorcycle um no he's like well this is actually a good fourth line shift and he's pointing out ryan reeves i'm like you fucker you know what you're doing with that but then the guy who screws it up for the fourth line is who the most important part of it the center david camp boo boo and hiss so camp there's like evidence he could get it together like clingberg is just

like from leaf's practice today the third pair is benoit lagasin they could go with 11 and 7 uh tomorrow night against calgary but if they don't clingberg is going to get healthy scratched in favor of two guys who didn't even make the team at a camp jesse show show us the picture or maddie show us the picture now if you're a goaltender 10 the goal we are going to clingberg in a minute here but this moment uh was the moment that ended the game it broke the back i mean yeah you like listen if you're if you're if you're betting and a lot of people are on on because of jesse on them coming back right yeah but like before this you felt like it was possible yes no this was yeah this was the the sixth goal was it not yeah but you still feel like

two goals they could five minutes they could have done it no it was that that five three goal the one before this right is the is the backbreaker i would think i'm not gonna say i'm glad they lost because i'm not but like good you can't do this every freaking game you'll be interested to know that today uh the entire practice was dedicated to penalty kills and team defense well their penalty kill is terrible um and their team defense is terrible so yeah there you go how does this quote make you feel i'll be honest with you i actually didn't mind this sheldon keith our fans deserve better it's not good enough good job he has never said anything close to that no because his gm uh has given him license to be honest about his team instead of having them whine and moan and

complain and which has happened in the past he called out austin and mitch i want to say early in the canada season well he called him out last year yeah and then and when we had to walk it back had to walk it back the next day walk back nothing i mean the core is playing well all right maybe maybe it's a little different because you know you feel like you have license to criticize the guys who aren't necessarily your prize ponies or whatever but like dude they're terrible the biggest problem with the team is team defense yes from from top to bottom from the stars down to david conf like every single player needs to get their defense better and it's on the back end and with the forward group and i i'm i'm shocked at how much

of a problem it is because you you think that oh yeah you think that they would just be able to play defense because we saw it last year well but there were problems last year too there but never I like this. No, you're agreed with you 100%. I think that people overrated how good the Leafs defense was last year. I think that they performed the best case scenario. I was never a fan, frankly, of how it was all made up, but it was the best defense we'd seen in years.

It really was. I don't feel like Riley's not playing poorly. No. Brody's fine. But I think we didn't maybe know how thin it was. Oh, it's thin. How close we were to the precipice. And I want to read you this stat.

Sheldon Keefe on John Klingberg we need to protect him better so Kevin Pappetti took that and said entering tonight's action there were 188 defensemen in the NHL with 100 plus minutes at 5 on 5 Klingberg had started at just 5.6% of his shifts with the defensive zone face

off so that means I'm not sure you can protect him better than that that ranks 187 out of 188 I don't know what else Sheldon Keefe can do Jonas Siegel you gotta get him off the hockey team wrote this the problem the Leafs were trying to protect klingberg um uh plenty before timothy lilligren suffered the high ankle sprain in boston last week after initially slotting him in their second pair to disastrous effect to begin the season

the leafs lightened his load considerably they cut his minutes eased his competition by placing him on the third pair they protected him as much as they could and it didn't help then the lilligren injury happened and we saw uh the makeshift pair against giordano The Leafs have surrendered 3.5 expected goals at 5-on-5 per 60 minutes with John Klingberg on the ice. Oh, my God. That ranks in the bottom 10 in the NHL in terms of NHL defenders who've logged at least 155-on-5 minutes.

Also alarming, the Leafs own an expected goals mark of 35% when Klingberg shares the ice with Austin Matthews. Even with the Leafs' best player, it's not going well. Well, I also don't understand why we're ripping into Klingberg so much. i mean we we know that he's an offense first defenseman he only makes 800 grand against the cat oh sorry that's eric gustafson who went to new york oh sorry about that oh sorry he actually he makes oh fuck over four million dollars oh good job brad like i don't think we're if we're given midterm evaluations yeah it wasn't a great signing i think it's obvious we should have known

what klingberg was and he's never gonna be the defenseman that he was in his heyday in dallas ever again but like like so i was talking about this in the video and people were like what do points have to do with defense nothing i didn't every okay in the late 1800s they invented hockey fuck um gotta start everything from the beginning klingberg was always a defenseman where you took the good with the bad there's no good he hasn't gotten a point for i think i was wrong yesterday it's either seven or eight games he he got five points in his first six games he has not gotten a point eight eight point eight games he's gone without a point i believe seven or eight yeah bad both are bad he had i i said in the video yesterday he's had four 10 goal seasons 10 or

more seasons no i was wrong he scored 10 goals last year it's just that it was split between dallas and um dallas it's seven by the way seven games without a seven games without a point this guy has a career high of 67 points five seasons of 10 or more goals and that doesn't include the 67 point season because he only had eight that year so like listen I don't care if you're giving up nine goals a game as long as you're scoring 10 right like it's just oh yeah have more goals than your opponent and he's way not doing that like when he fell over yesterday like I think we were all getting caught up in how funny it was who falls over like that no one in the NHL now his skating isn't up to par i've seen guys that's basic stuff i've seen guys toe pick i've

seen guys trip over their feet that was like a rule you ever see the video of that old guy riding a bicycle backwards and at the end of the video he's like oh i've been doing that since i was a kid and then he goes and the video cuts off before he falls off it just ends on the and then the next i don't think i have but the end of the video is a photo of him in the hospital no i have not seen that it's a um if you want to feel like a bad person okay there's the video for you that's how he fell he fell over like he fell what is that e u r r g h that's how we fell over like there he is on the ice if you want to bring that look at that but then like here's the great thing about falling down kids let this be a lesson you get back up and once he got back

it's like he hit factory reset he had factory reset like and then like where are you where's he going after this he's like standing in the middle of the slot it's over at that point what told me about that goal was there was four guys there and none of them had anyone like here's here's here's the worst thing that i could say that's a three on four i know it's terrible this is the worst thing I could say about Klingberg's defense after he fell down and got back up he did exactly what I'm going to do in the Easter Seals tournament tomorrow which is all right at least I'm in the slot taking up space in general he doesn't move he doesn't go towards someone he like whenever there's these breakdowns like I don't know what a coach would

say but like Max Domi could be better here too let's be honest I mean that shouldn't be his guy But like when there's a breakdown, just I think worst case scenario, just fucking pick someone up. Sure. Even if it's not your guy, pick somebody up. One of the more egregious parts of the it was the 2-1 goal is that it didn't happen immediately on the Klingberg falling down instance. There were there were opportunities within this scrum to get your your defense together and just play as a team in that in that little area in front of the goal. There's five leaves there. It takes about, I think it's like 10 seconds or 20 seconds after Klingberg falls and they enter the zone.

They send the puck around a little and then they finally score. It's a complete mental breakdown by everybody on the ice. And it starts with that and nobody getting back. And there's a serious problem with the guys, as you just said, picking up the correct man when they come back into the zone to play defense. Like on the goal that the fourth line allowed, David Combs' role was to get the man right in the middle who ends up scoring the goal. from frankie from frankie carano yeah he broke this down wonderfully because it looks on initial reaction that oh reeves is coming back late to grab his man no reeves is coming in last there should have been a ford in before to grab the guys who are in the middle of the slot ready to

score on the goaltender reeves is defense is abomination it reeves is never and will never be the forward who's supposed to be first on it in the defensive zone he's always going to be the third guy and how many times like i know the stat is crazy i know the status crazy where he hasn't been on for a goal for he's been on for eight or nine against but how many of these fourth line clips have we seen him directing traffic and going no what the fuck are you doing and it's almost always camp right now i'm gonna say this and it's gonna blow minds david camp is a better hockey player than ryan reeves but through 13 games ryan reeves has had a better defensive mind than the leafs 2.4 million dollar a year for the next four years shut down center

this guy got monstarred like absolute space jam just took all his powers what happened i thought he was supposed to be the defensive center like i thought he certainly was he was I thought that was his assignment. Listen, what your eyes told you last year and the year before when we had him, and we had no idea he even existed before he came here. No. And then he was good. He was a guy who was quite good, I think.

He's not the defensive center. He's the ambiguously there center. I think they've asked him to do two different things, and it's pulled him off the one thing that he's good at. What are the two different things? They asked him to be a third-line center and to score. And create on that. No, but he's asking him to score.

You put him between Nyes and Domi to be a defense. He's been a zero. I'm 100% right. You think they're asking him to throw his on the third line? They need to create offense from the third line. So then what happens when he's on the fourth line? He's still breaking down. 100% because he's readjusting.

And he's also playing with a guy. Oh, what? It's on the organization. That is a completely fair point. I will say this. It's obviously on True Living, but it's on Sheldon Keefe. We saw this last year. We saw this last year.

He's a zero on offense and has always been, so I don't understand the logic of, like, oh, we expected him to score almost four, but what? How? You spent a fortune on Ryan O'Reilly because Kampf wasn't good enough. Holmberg, like, briefly took his job, and by briefly, I mean for, like, 30 fucking games.

Like, what are you doing? And this is my point. What are you doing? So they ask him to do something that he's not good at. He fails at it. Domi can't get going. nyes can't get going and then he's got to go back to the to the fourth line play with two new guys that he's never played with one of them who is objectively not a national hockey league player

anymore oh and we're and we're going and we're saying you know the problem here is david khan no the problem here is what the coaching is coaching staff originally asked of david khan i'm sure he's got some i would i would at this point be a little bit not confident if i were him then you go back to the fourth line and you cannot even trust half of the wing like that is a that's a that's a tricky spot to be put in and i'm not saying his play has been good enough but i will tell you that that is going to mess with anybody's confidence and on top of that he just signed a four-year deal usually guys who sign contracts we saw this with the big contracts that mitch marner and matthews got there's a little bit of you squeeze your stick a little bit afterwards

like i gotta feel like i'm up to i know i know it's they're human beings though if david golf is squeezing his stick too tight because he signed a million four or whatever it was 2.5 so are the 20,000 people in the building so are the hundreds of thousands watching at home like you know what I can sympathize figure it out of all the players that are an issue on the Leafs hey guys all the players that are an issue

on the Leafs which one is most likely to return to the form that we expect so what players are we talking about we're talking about Conf Klingberg, Reeves Bertuzzi, Domi I don't know who else we can talk about I think it's a team issue

Yeah, but I'm saying is David Kompf is going to be David Kompf eventually. I hope so. Bertuzzi has already taken a step in the right direction. He scored an even-strength goal. That's hilarious. Right. I love that we mentioned that yesterday. That's hilarious.

And Robertson scored, by the way. Robertson scored from a sick feed from Dome. Unreal goal. That was completely wasted a couple minutes later. Well, I know, but that line is exactly what I said it was. I'm like, okay, they're going to be a bit of a liability. They're going to score goals. just score is it an issue to have uh zero shutdown line uh yeah probably like if the idea is where

our third line is also a gay go have fun line well like where are they getting any defense from so here's where they here's where they screwed up um let's let's pretend camp hasn't been this bad he's let's let's readjust we're we're only talking about camp from last year yes fine okay you have a fourth line of gregor camp lafferty that's great i think like they they would bang and crash they would have speed they'd have like a teeny bit of offense teeny bit just a bit but they'd be responsible enough defensively you'd have two guys on there who can take face-offs you know like they and he would like Lafferty plays with snot he does he's not 230 40 pounds of snot but like what is Reeves man well that's the problem right again I told you I was fully out

there I was after the wild game I was pro Ryan Reeves all right that's great let's get gets the guys into it but I mean it's like it's just the the evidence is so obvious what's he at minus nine now it's something bad it and they had the fourth line actually had a good shift and then the second the puck left the offensive zone the fourth lines on the ice the senator scored the fourth line all game was fantastic in terms of eating up minutes in the offensive zone it's any time they had to play defense and i don't know what forward group on this team plays defense and and the reason we're harpen on these things is the cores scoring

they're playing well they're they're scoring in games where they're not even at their best Mitch didn't have a good game no no I don't know I don't know still a little lost out there yeah but then what he had he had four points in back-to-back games right he's just that sort of and he had a one-timer he missed you know

completely yeah defensively I don't know it's just I'm at a loss for who on the team plays defense outside of Morgan Riley who's been pretty good But how much easier is your forward's job if you are not essentially playing shorthanded every time number three is on the ice? It's the shorthanded.

Even worse than shorthanded. It'd be better if no one was there because he starts in the right position and then goes to the wrong one. So you play like, oh, okay, I'm going to trust him. Ah, he fucking burned me again. This dude is Lucy with the football. Like, out there, he's terrible.

And Sheldon Keefe did try his best in terms of limiting the minutes of the klingberg like you mentioned uh the defensive zone starts and the lack of them uh but like the 15 minutes on it on the ice that's there was uh two games ago four games ago he was up to 24 minutes and that's been cut down by by 10 full minutes you know he's cut back 15 minutes on the ice last night and didn't get him any extra didn't help didn't help no so what do you what do you do except scratch him uh i there was a mean tweet it's like can we leave him in sweden like i think that i think don't be mean i think there is uh um he's gotta figure it sucks because this morning elliot friedman reported that the leafs were in

fact in on matt dumba and matt dumba was interested in coming to the leafs but at the time because it was july 1st matt dumba wanted five years at 25 million or whatever it was that he wanted and the leafs couldn't fit him in um he ended up signing one year 3.9 in arizona the nature of july 1st is that you need to grab a dance partner so you're not left alone yeah dude they what about jersey what what did uh what did arizona give up for jersey couldn't have been much to get him back like what a cool story that would have been yeah fuck yeah i think um i think uh when you look at this too this is from 32 thoughts keith admitted there was concern about klingberg who was minus three i really try not to kick people who are down and what i see is a struggling

player exposed for the first time to a white hot hockey market where your game is really picked apart um you played in minnesota that's true we know we talked about that on the show a little like we brought that up in terms of like ryan reeves doesn't expect to have a mic in his in his face after every single year i i would i would think that a lot of these hockey players don't realize the market that toronto is if they don't understand toronto but now that you're here you gotta learn now like you guys gotta step out of like our hockey world like maybe professional athleticism isn't for you like it maybe it's not maybe you're good at sports despite yourself like football basketball soccer fucking anywhere uh uh except for north america except for north

america yeah uh even even i mean messi's doing pretty well yeah i know he was an international well and that's the thing is that other countries send their media over to follow messy and like you see like i i i saw in the wnba like during uh introductions they bring out like props and shit yeah like there are there are other sports and other markets where they're they're looking for the attention give it to me because they know what it means i just don't believe that what no one watches hockey in Dallas so here's what they do here's what hockey players will have to accept what the game is growing actually very quickly especially in the southern United States is seeing exceed oh yeah the the franchise values like the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise value year

over year is up 25 percent that is driven by multiple factors but a lot of it is interest in the game internationally and then beyond all that so to to all the hockey players that want to escape the media um if you're older you're lucky because your career is going to wind down soon for anybody who's young and and wants to escape the media attention this is not going to get better for you no and it's not just going to be toronto like i know the rangers kind of go under the radar because there's so many teams in new york there's a million there's so many teams they're just like it's but you look at like you said markets like minnesota markets like buffalo markets like pittsburgh uh markets like los angeles where the kings when they're winning

are everything dude even ryan o'reilly like i think we've overdone the oh you know he couldn't handle the bright lights of toronto yes so he no he didn't want the bright lights of toronto he didn't want it but like then he went to the quiet hamlet of fucking nashville where the fans are crazy they're nuts and it's but the media isn't the same to his to back up his point the media isn't the same in nashville right but if you how many how many reporters you get on probably two game day as opposed to Toronto if if Klingberg is not minus a thousand and he has two or three goals like we're not giving him any shit yeah but I think it's easier to stink in a different market right now yeah I think Adam's points is like so valid in that it is like the media stuff is it's

going all online like there's the borders don't really matter anymore like if you want to cover some replay our parents didn't have instant replay if you want to cover something from afar you can 100 do it just through clips and and stuff on the internet but like if you want to suck day to day in a market it's easier to do that uh in a different place that's not toronto i think that's fair if if you if ryan o'reilly who is trying to downplay i don't i the media market toronto is not the reason i didn't sign there no it's it's a large part of the reason you didn't sign here yeah but i think i think at the end of the day that is going away so i 100 agree that is going away your ability to run away even in arizona um where you know they they have not

been traditionally most well that team is going to find a spot yeah that that that team is probably gonna make the playoffs this year by the way it's gonna do well wherever they go and and and i think i i think that this whole uh hockey players want to hide from the media thing better get used to it boys yeah better better fucking nut up because we can we can stop asking for more money and i don't know you don't want to do this stop asking to be fair to be fair for john klingberg he's never complained about it publicly no so i don't know where this is coming well it's freach freach said it's the first time probably and and maybe he's never been written about or talked about in these ways maybe not and you know i think the other thing that plays into it in toronto is

frankly we actually don't have a local broadcast crew if i go watch nesson if i go watch a dallas stars game if i go watch a tampa bay lightning game the the guys who are doing play-by-play and color and sideline reporting are rooting for the team. And I love that. That's great. We don't get that in Toronto. Toronto, it's Sportsnet who is trying so hard not to like the Leafs.

They're trying so hard not to like the Leafs because they don't want to get criticism from Western Canada about liking the Leafs too much. Well, now that I'm not there anymore, I can tell you it's a thing. It's 100% a thing. It's absolutely a thing. Hey, can you maybe stop talking about the Leafs so much? Oh, okay. And then, hey,

uh can we talk about the Leafs oh weird it's the number one fucking thing on the website this is the point so so so then so like you know normally when you have uh when you got a local broadcast crew like let's say Bally's in the market or the Vegas Golden Knights are streaming their own games and they've hired the crew those guys are not gonna they're skin in the game for them they're not gonna shred these guys they're gonna root them on because the better what's good for the goose is good for the gander in this market there's no actual broadcast crew that's like friendly everybody else everybody's out to see exact being very honest it's unfair to the fans too like you watch any other sport every sport has their own damn uh crew and like you even go

the raptors raptors over their own crew like we have local games yes and it's unfair at least fans that we've never we haven't had a local crew since rogers took over the deal in defense of the national media like what are they supposed to do gaslight the fans it knocked 100 klingberg's awesome 100 percent number two is a great fit but it's it's a joe hagerty guys the guy in in boston or no who's the guy that's always on hagerty is in boston you're thinking of um oh my god you know the guy on the broadcast jack edwards jack edwards now people hate jack edwards bostonians love jack edwards and that's all jack edwards needs the broom i think he's one of the best local guys there is rick jenneret rick jenneret was another one where and it's not necessarily rick was a

little bit more middle of the road you know jack edwards is a hundred percent bruins all the time But the players will feel like I got somebody behind me a little bit on the media side. And that does matter. I don't care. I don't care. The biggest fan base in the sport. If there's not enough, go somewhere else. Well, and I think here's the problem with John Klingberg is that his agent and this team put him in a bad position.

The team offered him the contract, and everybody's blaming Brad Treliving. And I get you. You should blame Brad Treliving. My question is, all of the people that Kyle Dubas surrounded himself with are in this front office. None of them left, including Shanahan, Pridham, all the AGMs. Everybody's there. Except for Spezza. Okay, except for Spezza.

And Spezza was sort of a—no, hold on. Sure. Hold on. So all of those guys are there, and all of them signed off on this deal. Remember, Dubas couldn't get a deal done without passing it through Shanahan first. And that's why he's not here anymore. So you're telling me Shani signed off on this, and Truliving's going to take all the blame for this? you understand why kyle doesn't want to be here anymore after seeing the berry experiment from a
