It starts with the education and then it kind of takes from there. it's called the steve dango podcast steve dango podcast that was not my call it was not my idea how dare you no original name guy yeah can we continue putting off having to talk about this game place no well i you know what i i don't want to start with the game i actually want to start with this so um somebody messaged me over the weekend and you got they said you guys were talking about the avalanche mascot who kicked somebody and couldn't be the avalanche howler anymore howler yeah the yeti the yeti now that was me and we were thinking that the utah yetis you know that being their name it'd be hilarious that they brought howler back yeah turns out you can't bring howler back because howler kicks somebody in the stomach and apparently there

was more to that story than was even reported there are rumors that there might have been some drunken shenaniganery oh like like x-rated with the howler costume there is there are rumors about that floating around all right yeah there are rumors now sex tape now that's you know what just it's 2024 i don't check that i don't my surprise oh meter is just shattered now i don't like that doesn't make this about barely registers i don't want to make this about how okay i want to make this about the islanders oh somebody messaged me and they're like do you know the islander story and i said what are you talking about they're like you know the captain highliner yeah islanders jersey tell me they didn't have a man dressed up as captain highliner

going around so they did no um no so so here's what happened the islanders in the early 90s were a sad reflection on what they had been 10 years previously yes right uh their jersey sales apparently according to this 2018 article from the new york post there's actually a book written on this entire thing um we want fish sticks which which is the bizarre and infamous rebranding of the new york islanders by nicholas herschen and by the way forwarded by uh is it oh i thought i said no it wasn't him it doesn't matter it doesn't matter who the four is by so 2018 this book comes out and we find out a bunch of stuff so the islanders thought hey we saw gretzky take the la kings he gets traded to the la kings they are last in jersey sales then he goes to the kings

and they unveil the new black and white king's jersey which was different from the purple and gold right and their jersey sales skyrocket what it must not have been wayne it must have been the jersey rebrand right what in actuality what happened was they got the greatest hockey player ever and they could sell a bunch of jerseys right so the islanders were like how about if we don't do the player part and we just do the jersey part where does that get us and so they hired a manhattan firm and they tried to figure out what exactly constituted an islander see so this so they hired a rangers fan yeah they a million percent hired a ranger sean michael edwards design was the company that did it okay now there's a whole there's a reason i'm getting to all this okay

the islanders also introduced a new mascot his name was niles he was a set horrid not niles horrid no uh he was a seven foot tall fisherman with a 15 pound plastic head and a red flashing light on top of his head and and so when they introduced the captain highliner jerseys uh which are very popular now they were not popular at all islanders fans were pissed and you couldn't buy the old new york islanders jerseys you could only buy the highliner ones fans booed niles the fisherman on his debut and one 10 year old boy was quoted as saying i'd like to assassinate him i think he's stupid which is very new york islander yes it's like kind of that that's very much them 10 years old so rob de fiore the man inside the costume and quoting directly from this

new york post article now was paid 75 bucks a game and apparently was subjected to endless abuse at one game a young boy punched him and kicked him in the groin which as a mascot is part of the hazard pay now rob defiori got really mad he got really upset yeah so he changed into his street clothes and later found the boy in the stands he bent down and whispered in the child's ear i know who you are like i know who you are why just to scare the shit out of him and apparently the kid never bothered him again and so that basically you have the mascot threatening the fans a 10 year old fan uh and they kind of billy bob thornton shit is that this is crazy yeah uh and then it this wraps up by saying the disastrous marketing moves were not helping

helped by the team's performance the islanders finished the division in the cellar they did finish 15th in jersey sales though and oh and then it's not bad quickly fell off a cliff again on jersey sales so anyway i just thought i would tell you that story where did you find that that It was a listener that alerted me to it. And then I did a little research. So, yeah. Thank you to them. Carlton's normal, right?

And how he how poor, innocent Arbor Jack I ended up paying the price for it. do you feel like you need to talk about this preseason matchup in such deep terms?

Do you, I've talked about the Leafs blowing a four, one lead in the third period of game seven. Yeah. I've talked about them blowing a three, one series lead to Montreal. Yeah. I have talked about them losing to their own employee,

Zamboni driver person. Yeah. Talking about the Leafs, heartbreaking losses, losses, which are gut wrenching and awful and ruin my day and week and month is so much easier than talking about these incidences. Um, there's no way to do it where everyone's going to be happy ever. There's no way to do it where everyone's going to be sane. There's no way to do it where, um talking about it on any other platform than this one is gonna make my day better

um i'm gonna talk into this microphone about my thoughts on the thing i don't plan on reading the comments i don't plan on tweeting about it i don't plan on ever speaking about this ever again i'm leaving it everyone loses their fucking minds when injuries happen from a hit or a dirty play or something from supplemental discipline uh you had leaf fans cheering it on um yet you had these little shitty edgelords calling cedric paré based you have people like dude oh my god oh my god the kids are not okay thing to say the kids are not okay like not even remotely the kids of the future that no they're fucked um they're so deeply fucked um uh you know people celebrating the passing of rhodion amir of uh people i saw people saying they hope the leafs plane crashes

i saw people saying well matthews is uh he's gonna fuck up his acl and it'll be karma um dude there's no sane there's no sanity i mean unless you're chronically offline and then you're and then it's like yeah a couple of days the corners where people are wishing death on people or celebrating death all i said when when this incident happened so i'm watching the game it's it's less than five minutes in i don't even think jack i'd jump parade yet um ryan balker's hurt from like i think he might have got hurt before marshall refi even made contact and then paray injures linea and that obviously there was a lot of contact there and all i did was i tweeted the habs lose reinbacker and linea in the first five minutes brutal

and the sheer amount of people that wouldn't kill you to say it was dirty i was like holy fuck i no it wouldn't probably you might you might kill me like i don't know by the psychotic reaction that you're giving me so that's the reaction bit of it it's impossible to talk about any of this shit rationally can i just tell you what i saw can i just tell you okay so no leave fan is going to go out of their way okay there's lots of leaf fans so you can't you can't ever say no leaf fan very few leaf fans are going to go out of their way to vehemently stick up for cedric pare because the vast majority of toronto may police fans learned cedric pare is part of the organization that night he was a i think he's a draft pick of the bruins he played for the

colorado eagles last year he was a summer depth signing and like depth signing we're talking about like marley's third line yeah depth signing um should he have even been playing in that game yes it's the preseason there's too many games yeah okay so here i gotta what jesse that's a great point i do got to say this pk su man going the fans didn't pay to see cedric pare and i have bad news for pk yeah you did yeah you bought a ticket to a preseason game yes you did what do you mean you did you're like that's exactly what they paid for yeah you you paid to see line a against two though against two it's a preseason game this is how it works fair to pk it's his team he was emotional i get it yeah but i get the red i get it i get it it doesn't mean i'm

gonna take it and be like that's how i feel about it too no no listen i i totally get it um so a lot of league fans had no idea who this person was line it comes in and he tries to split the d and pare sticks at his knee and line it comes in a little wide jesse's jesse's got it on the screen it's not awesome to look at actually this angle shows it less disgustingly so here's what i see here from pare it's a clear knee i don't even think that should be controversial look at them okay there's line a he's coming in we're trying to do this without getting demonetized i went a little too fast yeah you in and how dare you how dare you here he comes there you go sure there's the moment of contact

right it's a clear knee from pare now this happens so so so so so so fast i don't think this is a bum uh trying to make a name for himself this is not the name that you want to make for yourself this is there you go there you go there you go leave it this is a on those steps we got there this is a clearly clearly badly outmatched player and cedric paré does not belong on the same ice surface as patrick line a in a game that counts this game does not count that's why he's on the same ice surface as him this is a player who does not belong on the ice at the same time as patrick line a getting burned by a player of better quality and he like we see a hundred thousand times sticks his leg out because the guy's blowing by him am i wrong

no i don't think you're wrong it's a penalty probably could have been kicked out of the game probably could have been suspended uh he wasn't and no habs fan would have felt better about this if pare had been penalized and suspended and kicked out of a game that does not count you wouldn't feel an ounce better guys it's it happened it happened now paray was like smirking uh when when doing his post-game press conference like what do you think he's a batman villain he's not comfortable talking you think he was like how many how many on cams did he do for the colorado eagles do you know what i mean like this is not a media drain guy uh he probably probably is feeling very awkward yeah when you're awkward you kind of laugh people laugh when they're

feeling awkward the leaf should try and experiment shouldn't take too much from that that's what i'm saying the leaf should try and experiment today where they make cedric paré available to the media and they send someone out there who isn't him and see if anyone notices i don't know if they would i don't know if i would i don't know this person that's that angle really shows the hyperextension and lining his knee it's so bad it's so bad um you know i i was listening to 32 thoughts this morning trying to get like a variety of like opinions on all this and um the nhlpa and this is me frege didn't say this this is me extrapolating needs to figure their shit out and needs to prioritize the health of their best players there are too many pre-season

games preseason games contribute to hockey related revenue so the players are i don't recall hearing they're asking for a pay cut so six preseason games is what it is until they decide they're willing to do that right it's a minimum of six some teams play seven or eight it's absurd yeah it's absurd like six is the fewest preseason games the leafs have played in eons eons um um we we spoke to someone who uh was like oh yeah you need all these games for preparation until the covid bubble arrived and they're like actually we need one one it it wasn't important it wasn't important like i i don't know who this serves i don't know which players this helps nothing and like would you feel better about this incident

as a Montreal Canadiens fan would you feel better that Patrick Laine who is your big offseason get potentially had a season ended by a better player in a game that counted I don't think so I don't think they would no I think we're getting lost in the weeds here we're getting lost in the wrong thing if if you are a Canadiens fan I can understand the the anger because it's like of course so exciting if this was Matthews you'd be losing your mind yeah but I also would say that Cedric Paré, whether it was intentional or not, I think Laine shifted at the last second, and Paré

was flat-footed and tried to catch him. And does that mean that he did the right thing? Was it still a bad hit? Absolutely. But my thing is, him taking out Laine or hitting Laine or whatever, even if he lets Laine go by, Paré's not making the team.

So it's not like we're looking... It's not people like, oh, he's trying to make a name for himself by taking out a guy's knee. i he's not only not making the team this isn't jake dodge this isn't matt cook yeah this is these are not players that cedric powright does not have a reputation of i'm gonna kill people to get to the he doesn't have a reputation yeah well he's trying to make one i'm patrick lining i don't know no he's not people don't know this person yeah he had 35 points last year in what in the ahl in what league exactly that's my point and yo that's that's what i'm saying is it's not like this guy

some big like you know he is big he's big but he didn't look at it he's not coming in with like how many 58 penalty minutes last year like he's not some goon no right that's what my point is like jake dodgen is a specific example that i love because that guy sucked well but he was willing to do shit that would get him suspended he was a player who showed up on the scene and immediately started injuring everyone yeah and he was it it was it he was like he especially in preseason he was like a bad weapon like you could tell even tampa was like shit we really shouldn't play this he was the nikita mazapin of hockey yes he's like you're a danger to the life out there i'm not trying to tell you those players don't exist i'm trying to tell you i don't think

this player this is the wrong guy these players are not typically uh very subtle about it yes but um like suban in his video said you know well i i don't want uh i'm not saying that the star player should be babied but then you get free john 32 thoughts and he's talking about veteran players around the nhl think the onus is on par a to not injure line a right or to not lay a big hit on a star player that is absolutely ridiculous what this is the national no you have to play them you have to play them hard if you're trying to make it right if you don't want these players on the same ice surface because you think it's a danger to one of them

because one of them is just straight up not as good. He's not, Pari's not close to as good as Laine. Then you need to find a way where these games don't happen. Right. That's the beginning, middle, and end of it. I really don't want to hear that. Yeah.

Now, I am confused. And Adam, you were laying out theories for, well you know does line a share some onus here you didn't quite say it like that but no i don't think i think line i beat him and dodge or i'm sorry dodging but uh dodge and light power a tried to catch him right and i'm not saying that it was a good hit i'm saying i'm saying line a outclassed this fucking guy right like it's and he should but i did see some people say well he's trying to split the d and he and he sticks his legs out wide no but no no no wait though wait though we're guessing and that's not good enough it's not good enough and it's no one's fault the

reason fans out there are guessing right now is because the nhl is leaving us pissing into the wind they release these videos when a player gets suspended explaining why a player got suspended and we've mocked them on the show in the past lampooned them if you will but by and large they're extremely helpful right they help us understand even if we disagree with the explanation we understand the stance of the league yep the league is this and this and this we suspended him because it was intentional or it wasn't intentional intentional it was reckless or it wasn't reckless yep this is a hockey play this isn't a hockey play we understand where the league stands on this specific incident and then you can use it as precedence visual and audio precedence

going forward no they're not going to do that for this it's a very high profile thing though and it's the pre-season and i just don't think it would kill them to release a video explaining that's why this isn't a suspension i would love that but we all know that's never going to happen because this league that's not how they run you know also you spend a lot of time going should we make a video for that should we not make a video for that you you you really like they really making a video as to why a league like you know a league would never do that because then they would admit stupid then they then they would open themselves up to criticism for the video and say well buy your own and then a bunch of people would come back they're getting criticized right now

steve you're asking for the league to take accountability on this stuff they've made it clear that they don't i'm asking them to be a league i i and i am telling you that this league the way it's run right now they don't want um they don't want accountability on this one and so that brings us to the arbor jack i think yeah because no no no here just one one more sec like arto kaliev had a knee last preseason he was suspended two preseason games and two regular season games is there a difference between what kaliev did like with obviously without showing the video and what paray did there are visually as fans anecdotally but the league it would help greatly if they went on record and said here's the difference between these two things here's

the difference between this hit that was two games that don't count in two games that do and this hit that was literally nothing right except not literally nothing because part of the reason that jack guy was fined and not suspended find three one 384th of his salary is because the league looked at it and went yeah all right that'll do yeah that's okay you know what your suspension is you get the shit beat out of you i don't know if that one will hold up in court you know that's the one i don't blame the nhl for not putting on record because it's a psychotic thing for an alleged business i think to throw out there i think when when when they're in their internal meetings if you were a fly on the wall accountability means problems right

because then you got to be accountable being what are they the mob being accountable is hard why would you want to be accountable accountability means problems yeah it does yeah said tony soprano i can't wait to see what happens next a couple are you fucking kidding a couple of things on on what you just said there one the kaliev uh knee maddie if you want to pull this up uh kaliev got hit by radko gudas moments before yeah he goes for the neonny so he gets demolished by in this preseason game he gets up and there's a clear intent to go after whoever has the puck and kill them because he just got hit yeah so here you have a guy directly uh retaliating to something that just happened and he goes out of his way clearly in the play in the video to stick

out his leg and make this hit so that he can get some retaliation on the duck so it's a little different in that yeah with the parade situation there wasn't clear intent to knee on knee it was he was getting beat and he and he kind of sideswiped him so jesse here can i ask an important question over the last 60 seconds when you brought up that video and professionally explained it to everybody did it kill you it didn't so what the fuck so why can't they be like here's the difference because you can't you can't i don't think for them they can do it in a one-off incident i don't think that's it would have to be outlined in the cba where it's like hey if we not suspending a guy every single time we would explain what happened like that that would have to be no not every

police going hey here's why we didn't arrest the guy yeah like they just don't do that i think i think they're not gonna do that you're asking for a little much but the implication when there is nothing and no explanation i think what is just it okay this is fine what you want is a benchmark and what i we we i think we agree with you on that we're all we're all in agreement we're just not going to get one from this administration that's crazy yeah so so the other thing that i think is a part of this incident is that it wasn't even penalized yeah the palliative no uh pare oh i was like what no pare was like there was no penalty on the play and i think it clearly should have been a penalty yeah so like they wouldn't even address an on ice incident that was just a part

of gameplay so in technically the way this worked in the realm of the hockey sphere it was just a play on the ice that's looking at it like ai and not a human yeah exactly yeah exactly but that's how they approach i don't agree i think like it'd be nice if there was like a league referee official who'd be like hey this is what happened and this is why everybody's upset and it should have been a penalty and they could have been fine and all that stuff i think at the end of the day it should have been par a gets the fine and jack i uh gets one game i'm okay with par getting suspended i have no problem with that but like jack i getting uh a fine and no suspension like listen it sucks line is hurt it sucks it's bad it's wrong it's unfortunate i i cheer for a team that directly

goes up against the montreal canadians and i feel bad for the player i feel bad for the team and i feel bad for the fans there's no justification for jack i not getting suspended other than well he deserved it multiple punches to the back of the head with the glove on yeah and and i've seen the debate like well at least it was glove on dude that's way worse you can bear harder try punching a hockey helmet bare knuckle versus glove on and tell me which one you there's a reason there's a reason these guys take their gloves off because you that's why boxers wear gloves there was a famous incident where a boxer was beaten nearly to death by his opponent who illegally took stuffing out of his gloves right and obviously that you know that fight was thrown

out and i think people went to prison like yeah you you you agree to terms in a in a fight and then you broke those terms and used it to to your advantage and also you nearly killed your opponent in the process right so that that's a very extreme example but glove on repeatedly glove on punching someone is never and has never ever been allowed dylan larkin got a game suspension i think it was for um he got hit from behind by matthew joseph he was very upset about it he got up and he Cole Cox him right in the face yeah now did he get one game for punching him glove on or one game for connecting is is that the difference is oh if you connect flush it's bad well yeah because it's the actual action occurred yeah but as long as you don't connect flush fill your boots just hit

him as many times as you can hopefully he doesn't die again it has to be you have to with the action and the action has to happen oh boy it's not the intention boy it's the it's the action itself it's just not a league of professionals well i it's this is it's terrible that's terrible with jack i i didn't understand that i but i understood it but i also don't care like i like in the sense that it's like oh okay so they're because because the nhl being the nhl like i don't care if they suspend arbor jack i for a game in the preseason i don't care the the and i and and honestly like he's not a great like he's a great fighter he's a great vibes guy the best uh he's amazing for that i don't know like what are we gonna do but that they just lost line isn't that like you know i

of players right the whole purpose is to punish players and also make up for when a ref misses do something like that's i'm just asking the league to do something on both sides of this and like oh like uh jack i you know it was a seven minute power play and he was kicked out of the game it's a preseason game yeah it doesn't matter who gives a fuck yeah who cares and like okay so both fans are upset or both fan bases are upset with uh the conclusion at the end of this which means they did a good job no it means both fans have very legitimate gripes with the way this very very shitty league has decided a punishment or the lack thereof in these two incidences the way i neither decision makes any sense the way their logic usually goes in these incidences

is when the initial play happens where somebody does something and then the guy who gets upset and does something, there's some punishment there. Like either whether you agree with it or not, that's just kind of how they've done the beats so far with their discipline they hand out. If you go back and there's an intent where I'm getting retribution for this thing that happened,

that guy who blatantly is out there just to injure somebody gets punished because you can't do that. That is outside the play of hockey. so they have to say no even though like we all know like it's inside this is a part of the game right don't don't think i'm being soft on this i know this is a part of the game but the nhl has to have the illusion that hey we have to punish you because you're taken away from actual playing of trying to score a goal so here's at least something and i think a fine was so little in terms of uh matching the action here of jack i so i think there could have there should have been

put out this article jeremy swayman trade is not on the radar for bruins for now he gives three reasons why not it's a short article makes a lot of sense sure but i feel like if i'm jeremy swayman and he's doing that it's clearly in response to what happened with chiclets right oh yeah and it's and whether or not this swayman was directly involved the bruins think he was involved in that and i think swayman's like no i'm a nine million dollar goalie or an 8.5 million dollar goalie and i'm not taking less eight by eight by eight is the right number you think so yeah you i you've never been the starter i agree with you that you're that's it's a reasonable contract for both two rfa years you're 25 we're not buying free agency until the third year of

this deal are you kidding me eight eight million dollars and we're giving you the full eight years he's never played more than 44 games in a season take that i'm a hundred but the the way they're spinning this right now you you nailed it with the baby face and heel turn like that's that's the rock turning right there now i'm cheering for you now that's fantastic stuff now the argument if i'm swayman so that you know he's never been a starter carol kaprizov was signed to over nine million per for eight years after less than 60 games and i wonder if swayman's like sometimes you just know i am this good yeah you haven't seen me that much i'm this good but for the sake what's her other option for the sake of the bruins you're paying you're paying your backup

million and 70 really don't say six million dollars don't what's the difference between zero and a million a million times six no i know that's what it's worth i know that's that's how Look at it like that. got as far as they got and if i'm him i'm looking at not only am i great in the regular season you know how good i am in the playoffs you know that i am like i'm ice fucking cold there's no way if i am him i go i i think i think it's less about dollars guys i actually think it's term and it's and if i'm him why would you go eight years oh you want the last that's what i think this should be about yeah i don't think that's an eight year point yeah that's how they make more money now eight million bucks at 44 games played last year yeah i can see that and maybe even next year maybe in the year after but after that i'm 28 and i'm a ufa he and he's probably thinking okay well okay assuming the cba gets done and that's always a big asterisk let's say

at the end of this contract or even midway through the contract we're at 105 million dollars 100 million even that's starting to look like eight percent of the cap for me when you're as a goalie 30 or 40 percent of any win i don't know here's an idea here's an idea swayman wants his shorter deal probably at less money per year right maybe yeah and it would have made sense to sign him to that deal had you not traded all mark when you didn't need to well and this is a trade that wasn't very good this is the bruins fault oh it's a million percent where jeremy swayman is is the bruins fault because they tried to trade all market the blue line or at the blue line at the trade deadline uh to los angeles he didn't want to go wants to stay in the east um then in the

offseason they finally got him okay fine we'll trade you to ottawa all they had to do was say to jeremy listen let's work on this deal and then internally like then we trade all mark like like what are we we're looking at this through 2024 because here's the difference yeah jesse's like how can we spend that much money on goaltending and i think jesse makes a very good point how can you have 11 or 12 million dollars but if you had done it for one year let's say you kept all mark and you had swayman at eight million and all market five maybe you get swayman at eight with all mark there you shouldn't have a 13 million dollar tandem unless it's that yeah and then and then it better be good here's what they've done they've downgraded their backup

goaltender position to yunus corposalo who by a lot of i'll go i'm gonna uh defer to travis on this one never been good that's not true i never i disagree with that corposal was very good in la and columbus he was unpredictable he struggled mightily in ottawa where every goaltender seems to go and struggle and all you did was save two million bucks it wasn't a good trade so even if i think he's got like three years left so even if swayman signs at eight million you're still paying your goaltending tandem 11 million dollars for the next three years minimum unless you can move corpus hollow again like like it's not like that's what it's going to be guys well and if i'm corp if i'm if i'm swayman i'm going okay well i'm not

signing long term why would i do that and they also went big game hunting and free agency lindholm yes zadorov they didn't prioritize their goaltending situation they thought they could get it wrapped they did and like i'm not saying you shouldn't have got zadorov or you shouldn't got lynn home but you went you went big game hunting you got it and now these are the consequences the consequences are you can't do these other things and they completely kneecap their leverage the moment they traded all mark when they didn't need to oops i think i'm the only person who thinks that the corpus all all mark deal was good for the bruins i mean it wasn't as bad as people say no i think the context of now they're screwed in these negotiations in a vacuum the trade is

corpus ala is a career 901 save percentage no no take out his auto all year what what are the other numbers oh it goes up to 962 he was uh not what there was uh the previous year was good columbus la yeah uh was like a 913 then a 921 the previous two years were 877 and 894 then he had a 9-11 then he had an 8-9-7 an 8-9-7 a 9-0-5 and then his first season was a 9-20 he's all over the place but i feel like in recent memory those those la columbus years i guess that's what they're banging on right that's that's what you're banging on the ottawa year was an outlier and you get the 25th overall pick from this past draft that was also in the trade that they got your your the idea is you're getting a cheaper a little not as good as all mark but

you're downgrading a little but you're saving the money and then you you run next season with with swayman as a starting goal and the negotiations didn't go as planned but i'm i applaud the management here in boston for holding the line on this deal because one thing that bothers me about the austin matthews deal that he signed is that it's four years that you have the guy there i don't love it and they he won the negotiation in that he only signed that four-year deal so the idea for swayman is to only sign a shorter term deal yeah of course that's what he wants but as management you want him to sign the eight-year deal so that's the line i'm holding maybe the money goes up then maybe you gotta you gotta just say okay we'll pay him a little over

what we want to do but that eight years is where i'm holding the line because we need to lock up the players because that's what every star player is getting in these negotiations look at the leon dry side deal they got the full amount here's here's the the tiebreaker these things go on for long enough people realize they like the team a lot more than the player are you a bruins fan or a swayman fan uh yeah you know who you want to win here yeah like uh you know i i i cannot stand when people are intentionally dishonest and they're like i hope the player gets as much as you could want your team to win no you don't you want my team yeah i look at every day that goes on i say your season is getting worse jeremy swayman we know from experience here in toronto when
