Panago Pizza presents S.T.P.
The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle and Adam Walsh.
Gentlemen, we have a trade to announce.
But before we do that, we need to hear the best remix of the last week on the internet.
Are you serious?
Damn, Daniel. Damn, Daniel.
Get ready. Get ready.
This drop is going to wreck your life.
you wreck my life
damn daniel
damn daniel
damn daniel
damn daniel
damn daniel
back at it again with the white dance
we uh
do allegedly have a sports show
hold on
how great is this
I'm not gonna lie
I would bop to that.
I am bopping to that right now.
The white band.
Hold on, it's almost over.
Come on!
It's incredible.
Chicago Blackhawks.
All right.
You're right.
Just wanted to start with some music
and celebrate because it is Christmas.
Yeah!
This is our last show pre-trade deadline.
It's when we wake up.
It's like we're going into a bomb shelter.
Yeah.
And we're going to open it after all the 28 days later zombies go away.
And we're going to just see a whole new world.
Well, they're all ruining Christmas.
It's all happening on Monday.
Not now.
You know, people say that every year.
And every year there's like 10 or 15 things at least.
Plus the Leafs.
Like God knows how many moves they're going to make.
Totally.
They've already made two and they could still potentially have 10 more.
The thing is, the Leafs are, all the shrapnel from the Leafs still has yet to play out.
So this is why, last year we didn't really have a story like this, I don't think, like Buffalo sort of,
but there wasn't like a team that genuinely has been waiting their entire year planned for the trade deadline like the Leafs have.
It's interesting you say that, Adam, because Edmonton was objectively terrible last season.
And Buffalo was so bad.
But the consequence of how bad they were.
Like, we talked about it last show.
Buffalo ended last season with 54 points.
The Leafs, as bad as they are, already have 50.
Right?
They were so bad, Edmonton and Buffalo, that they had nothing to sell.
Yeah, that was the problem.
They had nothing to sell.
And they still don't.
The Leafs you can strip to the bone.
There's a little bit of flesh there, at least.
Absolutely.
And that's flesh that they earned last summer.
They went out and they got a lot of the stuff that they're now selling, which is interesting.
This is by design.
This is all by design.
Now, let's talk about the trade.
Chicago Blackhawks now, I guess they've rehomed Andrew Ladd because he did play there and won a cup there.
That's right.
He's getting the Christopher Stieg special.
Like, ah, you know, jersey fits the same.
Totally.
And I did win a cup here, but I missed out on two of them.
Oh, nuts.
No nuts.
I guess I'll win another one.
Oh, what a waste of a career.
So here's how the deal breaks down.
It's Ladd, Mike Fraser?
Matt Fraser.
Matt Fraser.
There's a Matt Fraser and there's a Mark Fraser.
It's Matt Fraser.
There's all kinds of Frasers.
I'm sure there's a Mike Fraser, too.
Fraser, Jay Harrison, former Toronto Maple Leaf,
who's apparently buried in the minors.
That's what General Fanger said.
For Marco Dano, first round pick.
A third rounder in 2018 as well.
This is conditional on the Chicago Blackhawks winning the Cups.
So if the Cup goes to Chicago this year,
Winnipeg then gets the 2018 third rounder for Chicago.
Which is, I don't know.
Oh, yeah, sorry.
Also, Winnipeg retains 36% of Ladd's salary.
That's a crazy condition.
Imagine being good enough where it's like,
oh, yeah, if we win, then yeah, you can have our first round pick.
There have been conditions like that in the past.
And one in particular I remember was Chris Pronger going to Anaheim.
Didn't the Leafs get an extra second rounder for Cabriolet because the Bruins won one year?
They did.
They did, I believe.
I think you're right.
That was like the Colborne...
I think the condition was they go to the final.
Right.
And yes, they got an extra pick.
I can't remember what it was.
And like, I don't mind those kinds of conditions.
You know, I think they're smart.
Like, look, we're getting this guy to be good.
If we get as far as we want, we have no problem giving up this pick.
If we don't get that far, we're going to be pretty pissed.
and it's going to be hard to do business with you again
because you fleeced us.
You know what I mean?
Totally, totally.
This is a...
I mean, Chicago's got to be thrilled
because, I mean, you get...
You get a really great leader, character guy
who's been there with you before,
played with these guys before, right?
Yes, and you know what?
I do mean Chicago,
but what I actually meant to say was Winnipeg
because what they wanted...
I don't know why I said...
I was like, wait.
Steve Engel or Steve Harvey?
I have to apologize.
I have to apologize.
The Winnipeg Jets actually get...
No, because what they wanted, the rumor for the longest time was they wanted a pick and a top prospect.
And the whole time I'm like, well, I know it's a trade deadline and everyone loses their head, but good luck.
Well, I actually got more than that.
They did have to retain some salary, but Matt Fraser and Jay Harrison I don't think were guys they were using anyway.
So in a way that was a dump and they almost cancel out.
I'm saying that with no numbers in front of me.
Well, I think, too, Winnipeg retaining some of Ladd's salary,
it still gives the Hawks $1.4 million under the cap to use,
which is a lot more than I actually thought they had.
I thought they were one of those teams that were right up against it,
but I guess the Harrison-Fraser part of the deal kind of loosened it up.
That's probably the only way the deal got done,
and that's another way to ensure that you get all those picks.
They're buying them.
So they're buying them. In the cap world, you've got to figure out ways you can buy draft picks and assets. The Leafs have obviously figured that out, and the Jets are kind of doing that with this deal. This comes from CapFriendly, you already kind of said it. With the Jets retaining 36% of Ladd's salary, the Hawks still have $1.4 million in deadline cap space, so that's the source.
Does this mean
That the two scouts that are
At the Leafs-Hurricanes game tonight
Are not there for nothing
Because both the Hurricanes and Leafs are probably going to sell
Leafs more than the Canes
Right, and does this mean that
The Leafs will not do business with the Chicago Blackhawks
I don't think so
I don't think, because most of the Leafs
Items, I hate talking about people like that
But most of the Leafs players
Assets that they have
Are relatively cheap
relatively and and when you're chicago okay so you give up a first round pick well okay that pick is
probably going to be somewhere 25 to 30 anyway and you give up a prospect like marco dano you
are mortgaging your future but at the expense of what you have your core and it's locked up forever
you have kane you have taves you have keith you have uh seabrook's up pretty soon i yeah i don't
remember what his contract's like i think crawford's locked up for a while i think he's got
I think Crawford after this year has got three years left.
So Jesse's...
One interesting thing about their cap situation for next year
is that they're projected to be $2.25 million over the cap right now.
And that is where the Leafs come in, because...
Oh, Brian Bickle?
Can you afford Brian Bickle?
Well, your Uncle Leafy can.
Right.
Artem Anisimov is locked up for quite a while.
They extended him before the season began, it looks like.
So he'll go up from 3.28
To 4.55
Seabrook is actually locked up
I forgot he was extended
Oh he was
Yo he's making more than Duncan Keith
Keith has one of those
Stupid
Ridiculously
Ridonculously
Long contracts
From before the lockout
And it's not even allowed anymore
He's making 5.5
Seabrook is
So stupid
Duncan Keith makes
Is David Clarkson making more than Duncan Keith?
Yes
Literally
he's making a couple hundred thousand more than keith uh you know who makes only 38 461 dollars
per season less than duncan keith dave boland wow dave boland
wow it's just unbelievable and it's and it's another example of like a guy like tyler sagan
when he rushed at the last minute to get that contract extension signed before those contracts
were illegal Tyler Sagan hits free agency and the number doesn't start with nine you hang up the
phone I don't get it I don't get it like what are the odds you're gonna suffer a career-ending
injury what are the odds not good anyway back to the Blackhawks your core is locked up um and you
just got this found money basically with a guy like Panarin who is signed to what this year and
Next, Panarin makes $812,000.
And after that even, you probably could bridge him.
Well, he's a little older, though, remember.
Oh, is he?
He's 24, so I'm not sure how that works.
Yeah, that's why people are upset if he wins the Calder,
because he played like three years of actual hockey.
No, they shouldn't be upset.
If he's the new guy in the NHL, it's still an adjustment, is it not?
And McDavid has got 28 points in 24 games.
I think McDavid should win.
I still think he's going to win.
It's an interesting argument.
But anyway, Andrew Shaw is up, Richard Panik's up, Yuri Seikach is up.
They probably want to retain Andrew Shaw.
I don't think they give a rat's about Panik or Seikach, really.
I mean, the Hawks are supposed to win now, is what I'm trying to say.
Like, it doesn't, okay, you don't want to just be giving away picks and prospects willy-nilly.
We saw what that did to the Leafs a few years ago, but the Leafs weren't the Blackhawks.
They weren't this team.
And it's not like, you know, the guys I just mentioned are old.
Keith is 32, but he's a cyborg, so he doesn't count.
Right. Yeah, exactly.
They're in position to win this year.
They're probably going to be in position to win next year,
and the year after that, and the year after that.
I don't hate the logic from their end.
And I feel like maybe we ripped on the Vermette deal a little too much.
Well, I mean, the reason I ripped on the Vermette deal
is because I wasn't sure how much he would actually help the Blackhawks,
and they kind of needed a defenseman.
And he didn't, at first, help them all that much.
I mean, I do remember he was scratched a couple games there, even in the playoffs.
The Hawks have put themselves in a bit of a better position defensively this year.
And, I mean, they were hurt last year.
But you've got to prepare for that.
Totally.
Totally.
You've got to prepare for that, right?
So, well, they just got Jay Harrison if they wanted.
They're in a position to win, and they can still add.
They can.
They can still add.
And, I mean, the thing is, if you're the Hawks,
I mean, people would say, like, you know, the Leafs give up Parenteau and take on Bickle.
What do you, I mean, what do you get?
Do you get Bickle's salary, and what kind of pick are we looking at here?
What would that look like?
This was the thing, because people were saying, you could probably get a first out of Chicago,
because that's how badly they want out of this deal.
And if you give them a piece that can help them, it's pretty good.
No problem, here's a first.
But now we're looking into next year, right?
Well, and that's not the worst thing either.
However, I would see, if I'm Stan Bowman, I am saving next year's first overall pick, or first round pick, because next year at the trade deadline, when I'm in the same position as I'm in this year, I'll do the same thing.
And why wouldn't you?
Why wouldn't you?
I mean, they can draft.
This is a team that drafts fairly well, right?
I don't know how they've done in recent years, because all they've really needed to do is get complimentary pieces.
Exactly.
And that's all that matters.
For the next two, three years,
they don't have to worry about that sort of thing.
But I don't.
I mean, I know they'll probably want to get out
from underneath Brian Bickle's contract,
but if I'm Stan Bowman, I am snot.
I almost said standing pat,
and I would have hit myself in the face.
You did say snot.
Yeah.
Snot.
I would snot make a move
and give up the first round pick for next year.
However, on the Leafs,
whatever they want.
Take it.
That is true.
Like, I don't think the Leafs would mind too much.
No.
But there's other people,
and there's other teams
that now are looking at Chicago.
and I would think, I mean, San Jose loaded up earlier this week
with, obviously, Leaf players.
Chicago makes this move.
You got to think that Los Angeles is in there
because Marion Gabrick's going to be out for a while.
Pittsburgh's got two guys at the Leafs-Hurricanes game.
Interesting.
Yeah, there are many, many scouts at this game.
I think it's a representative from almost every team,
but Pittsburgh and Chicago are the two teams with two people there.
Not that that necessarily means anything.
Right. It doesn't.
But, I mean, to me, when you have two scouts,
you're either scouting multiple people
or they're there to have a discussion.
Right, right.
Also, I wanted to ask you,
do you think that because Ladd is now gone in Winnipeg,
A, that's going to free up some room for them
to go after someone else,
but do you think then Dustin Bufflin re-ups with them?
He has.
Oh, he has.
I missed that one.
Did that happen while I was at the Grammys?
Yes, you know what?
I think it was.
Sorry, I completely missed that.
No, and he made bank.
what was it 7 plus mil
damn I completely missed that
it is 7.6
I'm embarrassed I'm sorry
no no no that's fine
for how big of a deal it was
it wasn't that big of a deal
yeah it wasn't talked about all that much
it was weird the number one takeaway of it
wasn't oh the Jets got Bufflin locked up
it was oh I guess
Ladd's available now
because everyone's just trade deadline on the mind
do you guys want to play some trivia
screw you for having another job Adam
Jesus.
Eight more jobs.
Yeah, yeah.
What's the trivia?
How many career playoff games do the Blackhawks have combined on their roster?
Oh, just friggin'.
I'm going to say more than, more playoff career games than the Leafs have on their roster
in regular season games.
Even though it's a load of crap.
No, no.
Might not be a bet.
Dude, Leipzig's on number three tonight.
Percy's on, like, what, number 15?
Yeah.
Dude, you're probably right.
It might be close.
I don't think it is close.
and I think the Blackhawks
are crushing them
in this part of it.
Oh, Brad Boyes
probably ruins it.
Yeah, maybe.
Maybe.
Damn Brad Boyes.
I'm going to say
850 playoff games.
If it is 850
then that's up over
the Leafs' current
regular season amount.
No, Brad Boyes has
Brad Boyes has
five or six hundred
I think.
Or no, that's points.
Okay.
What's the answer
to this one?
What's your guess?
700.
They have
played a combined
$1,345.
Wow!
I was thinking about saying $1,200, but I was like,
no way. $1,345.
Dude! Wow!
That actually might be more than the Leafs.
Yeah. I don't think there's an
actually about it. No, it's
100%. It's gotta be. No, Brad Boyce has
played 800 career NHL games.
He's still got 500 to go!
Yeah, where else? Where are the
500 coming? Peralto?
Komarov?
Reimer.
Not Komarov.
It's only his third season.
Damn.
The Leafs probably beat them, but not by much.
Not by much.
That's crazy.
That's nuts.
Wow.
Crazy.
By the way.
Must be nice to be a Blackhawks fan.
Well, I mean, what did they get?
Nothing.
Ever.
I've done that rant already.
You know what I saw today?
So, let's pretend Leo Komarov stays the Leafs' leading scorer.
Yeah.
And let's pretend he stays a Leaf.
This season, at least.
He's got 35 points right now.
Conor McDavid, who, as we know, missed most of the season with injury,
has 28 points in 24 games.
Is Conor McDavid going to have more points than the Leafs' leading scorer
by the season's end?
He might by the end of the month.
Now, we did this prediction last episode with how many points the Leafs would have
at the end of the season.
By the way, I think I'm doing pretty well with my 60-point prediction.
I don't think they've gotten—have they gotten a point?
Well, no, but they've only played one game.
Well, and they're tied with Carolina as we record this.
So, yeah, I guess you are looking good, man.
I mean, that's 10 to 70% right.
I still like my prediction of 67.
67 is, oh, that hurts.
I think Connor McDavid absolutely gets it.
Absolutely.
Yeah, I don't even think it's a question.
I mostly posted it as a troll, not going to lie.
Yeah.
So, this has to make the Blackhawks favorites in the West.
If they weren't already?
Depends on what Los Angeles does.
It does.
Because I think, we're talking complete teams.
Chicago and LA, to me, seem like the most complete.
Well, they also seem like teams that don't really give a damn about the salary cap.
They just kind of have their own.
We should also be worried about the Anaheim Ducks, the hottest team in the league right now.
Do you know their record from December 25th?
Let's hear it.
It's gross, right?
24-2.
Woo!
those are the way
that's the Ducks
we know
wait 20-4-2
yes
oh okay
24-2
so that's amazing
and we did pick them
to go to the finals
this year
we did say
I certainly did
yeah
so the
I also picked
the Lightning
what would
what would the
I mean like
there have been
rumors with the Leafs
and the Ducks
they've done deals before
but that was with
different management groups
not that that really matters
but
you know
do you see them as a team
that looks at this
and goes
this is actually our year
because we're hot now
and that's what matters
LA with their first cup
were 7th going into the playoffs
but they were hot
but they were hot
let's stop beating around the bush
with the question
how badly
does Dave Nones
want to give the Ducks
first to the Leafs
for Frederick Oche
let's talk about that
it's going to happen
let's talk about it
that's not going to happen
he's going to have to
fist fight Jim Benning
oh you know
he's just like
there's a big guy with size
Here's Thatcher Demko
By the Canucks fans
I gotta apologize
Thatcher Demko
I forgot that
The Canucks have like
One of the best goalie
Prospects out there
And a few people
Pointed that out
But it doesn't matter
Because he's gonna get traded
For Frederic Gauthier
Yeah for sure
And a first
And a first
Imagine
Imagine Dave
Dave
Dave Nones just calls up
Masai Ujiri and goes
What's Luis Scola
Going for these days
Is there a way
That we can interleague
He's still got Bargnani
Yeah
He's still got Bargnani
We feel like he's got
great potential. Dave,
that's the stupidest thing you've ever heard.
$5 million.
Yeah, exactly.
Pick up most of DeMar DeRozan's max
deal next year. By the way, DeMar DeRozan will be
making more than a quarter
of all Toronto Maple Leafs next season.
He'll be making $25 million.
The Leafs salary cap will be
about $72 million.
That's nice. You just know Tim Gleeson is
on the Hurricanes bench right now going,
my phone's ringing. It says Dave
Nonis
What the
Why does he want me to
Alright
Sorry guys
I gotta leave
Right back to the Leafs
Say right back to the Leafs
But the Blackhawks
It's funny though
Cause like
I've been looking at their lineup
And they are obviously sick
They are obviously the Blackhawks
And their second line
I think has usually been
Panarin, Kane
And
Someone else
I can't remember
But
Ponick?
Ponick
No no no
No?
It's been
That's what I was gonna say
Taves has been the first line center
And it's been between like
Saycatch and Ponick
They need
They actually could use a winger or two
So Parenteau would fit?
Parenteau would fit
Ladd obviously fits
So he takes care of some of that need
Parenteau could be a nice little fit for them
Even a Brad Boyes wouldn't be bad
I just have something to say
Oh dear
Brad Boyes would be great
Parenteau would be great
That would be awesome
And we do need to talk about
A couple of Toronto Maple Leafs
Who are done for the season
next when we come back on Sportsnet 590, The Fan,
and how, strangely enough, bad news is good in Leafland.
Bad news is real good.
However, I did want to point out before we go to break
that Carolina has scored in the current Toronto Maple Leafs game
that is going on as we record this show.
Can anybody tell me who scored the goal?
Oh, mother, no way!
No way, really?
Was it?
It was.
God!
Who was it?
Anybody? Any guesses?
Don't make me say it.
You're going to have to say it.
I did ask a trivia question.
Jesse, you can hazard a guess if you'd like.
I encourage you to be wrong.
It was a goalie goal by Cam Ward.
Incorrect.
Damn it.
Incorrect.
So confident.
Steve, do you want to answer the trivia question before we go to break here?
Was it John Michael Lyles?
It was John Michael Lyles!
We'll be right back on Sportsnet 590 The Fan.
Former Leaf, John, Michael, Lyle.
Okay, so let's talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs.
There's some good news, there's some more good news, and then there's some great news.
Oh.
And I know that you didn't expect that.
We're not going to break any trades, at least not yet.
We don't know of any.
They're tied, as of the recording of this show, one all with Carolina.
Who scored again?
Brad Boyce, that's right.
And?
Tim Gleeson.
Not Tim Gleeson, the other guy who used to play for the Leafs.
I mean, technically, Tim Gleeson scored.
When you really think about it.
When you break it down.
Yeah.
Who was it, Steve?
It was John Michael Lyle.
Stop making me say it!
His seventh goal of the season.
Oh, really?
No, hold up, hold up.
Was it his seventh?
No, it was Brad Boyes had his seventh.
John Michael Lyle's his sixth.
Oh, what a bum.
Just saying.
Just saying.
That's a defenseman.
And the Carolina Hurricanes are actually within striking distance of the playoffs all of the sudden.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Okay let's talk about
Something good
That's gonna make you feel good
Make you feel good
Apparently
According to what happened today
JVR shows up to practice
In a boot
So
The foot
There was some sort of setback
I don't know what the setback
Can be when you've broken a foot
Maybe fell down some stairs
Maybe
It's just not healing right
Not taking his calcium pills
I don't know
I don't know
But JVR
Is done for the year
Okay
Also
So, and Jesse, do you have the Leafs general manager up?
I do.
Okay.
Also, Joffrey Lupo.
Done.
Done for the year.
Now, that came out a little bit later today.
And really, I mean, Joffrey Lupo's played about four and a half games in the last few years.
So, I think...
Poor guy.
I think...
Unbelievable.
Like, really?
But there's, you know, they've already been on long-term injury reserve.
So the Leafs cap with those two off already remains at
They're about $8.09 million
Yeah, I was still a little confused as to how that works
So basically what happens
We won't talk about it
Go to General Fanager or tweet them for how that works
It says only $900,000
But that's because
Some of the long-term injury relief stuff
Is actually on the cap right now
But if the Leafs wanted to go up
They can go almost $9 million over the cap
Can I just read this tweet by George Resnick?
With Joffrey Lupo now down for the season,
the Leafs paid him $613,000 per goal in real dollars.
Sorry, $613,000 per goal?
Yep.
What did he get?
Six, 12 goals?
Something like that?
What is that?
He actually didn't do so bad in terms of goals per game.
He had a little hot streak.
He probably had 10 or 11 goals,
and he didn't play much,
so that's pretty good.
That's alright
He had like three assists
Poor guy
It's not good news
If you weren't going to trade for Joffrey Lupo before
You're certainly not going to do it now
Like in the summer
Even though you have to pay less
The guy's having surgery again
Again
How Stefan Robidod
Robidod is Joffrey Lupo going to be
Now
You'll have to ask
a certain 73-year-old
in the Leafs organization
that because
you gotta wonder
a guy whose
play has deteriorated
as much as
Loopholes has
a guy whose health
has been so bad
His entire career
he's had health problems
but there was like
a stretch there
with the Leafs
where he looked really
like the guy
he always should have been
He was an all-star
which I mean
Yannick Perrault was too
but you know
you can have a good year
but
he was with
the Phoenix Coyotes
back when they were
called the Phoenix Coyotes
nothing in the
Phoenix chart today
you know
I
I could see
him being
Robidod next year
in that
he
is paid not to play
and it doesn't count
towards the cap
although
at what point
does the NHL step in
and go
ah shenanigans
well
at what point
you could make
the same argument
does the NHL step in
with the Oilers
and go
ah shenanigans
They should
I don't think they should
But if
If the NHL has a problem
With the way they structure the cap
The new CBA is up in a couple years
So they can figure that one out
But the Leafs are playing to their advantage right now
So why not?
There's nothing the NHL can do
I did have a thought I was going to bring to the show
Jesse, do you remember
Who was picked first overall
In the NBA draft last year?
He had like a hyphenated name
Crap I forget his name
Well anyway
Imagine an NBA team
Adam
Imagine an NBA team
That had John Wall
Anthony Davis
And Kyrie Irving
And whoever was picked
First of all
First of all
First overall
Last year
Jesse you got it yet?
Anthony Davis
Kyrie Irving
John Wall
And whoever was picked first of all last year
It doesn't matter
Imagine that NBA team still sucking
That's the Oilers
All those players I just mentioned
Were picked first overall
In the years that the Oilers picked first overall
To be fair
Carl Anthony Towns
I thought it was Towns
To be fair the NBA is a far more individualistic
Star driven league
You need great players around
A guy like LeBron
But LeBron can get you to the playoffs
and probably the finals without much else.
He did it with Donyell Marshall as his best player.
Yeah.
In his third year in the NBA.
And Shaq was there too for a minute.
Sort of.
Yeah.
He did half his games in a broadcaster suit.
But that's the thing.
I didn't really want to get into the Oilers,
but this is the way the rules are set up.
So, the rules are set up this way.
Well, Lou doesn't care.
Exactly.
And the NHL can't step in.
So here's what you have
You've got
You could
You could sit Lupo
You could sit Lupo for sure
Now Lupo has to agree
If you can convince him
Yeah you have to explain to him
That his career is over
And he has to sit
For the next two years
And make ten and a half
Eleven million dollars
But there's pride
For the love of God
You know
I don't know
It's
I would love to know
What goes into that conversation
I would love to know
How you convince a player
To just sit there
I do too
Ask Robita
Are the Leafs really
just going to have over
$8 million. I think it's going to be
$8.25. Let's pretend that
actually happens, Adam. Next year, they're going to
have $8.25 million dedicated
to just players who are like, yeah, I'm done.
Potentially more.
You never know what they're going to do.
And they could. They could.
This team makes so much money that
they absolutely could.
And that's the thing.
As a Leaf fan, that's
exciting. Because
they can do that stuff. And they are
Leveraging the hell out of it
And good for them
And what do you care
How much money they spend
Exactly
It doesn't matter to you
If you're a Ducks fan
You gotta worry about that
If you're a Sens fan
You gotta worry about that
If the Leafs win the Stanley Cup
If the Leafs win the Stanley Cup
And this is how they did it
People are gonna be like
Yeah well they used all their money
And Leaf fans are gonna be like
So what
On the cup
So what
Who cares
Come at us bro
Do you think the Yankees
The Penguins won by sucking for a decade
Exactly
Exactly
And you look at
You look at the New York Yankees
Right
And the obscene amounts of money
That they have paid for championships in the past
And make no mistake
The New York Yankees bought championship teams
They didn't develop championship teams
It was Derek Jeter
And whoever was the free agent that year
Yeah, like it's not even controversial to say
People are just like, yeah, we know
But ask a Yankees fan and they go, yeah, check out all these championships
Yeah, woo
I don't care, and I think it's great
Now, here's the great news
So we've got good news that those two are going to sit
It's good news because
A, it'll give their bodies time to heal
So JVR comes back next year, and his body has less wear and tear on it
than it would have had he played to the end of the season, arguably.
In a way, let's pretend he didn't suffer a setback.
What's he returning for?
What's he really returning for?
Yeah.
And if you want to deal him, you're not going to have a problem dealing JVR.
And his beautiful contract.
Of course.
And if you want him to be part of your team going forward, yeah, sure, why not?
So you should heal him up
So you know
The fact that he suffered a setback
To me is kind of semantics
Right exactly
They just needed to give a reason
It's not semantics for him
And that's the other thing
People thought this was a loose it
But no you can't fake surgery for loophole
And you can't fake wearing a boot
I mean I suppose you could
Yeah I don't think JVR is that kind of guy
No exactly
But what I like is that there isn't the mileage on his body
Right?
No, he broke a bone, didn't he?
Yeah, but the rest of his body kind of gets to go,
huh, I'm going to get to heal.
Yes.
And be, because it, just newsflash for everybody that doesn't already know this,
professional sports, not good for your body.
It hurts.
Yeah, so not good overall for your health, strangely enough.
Jesus, he's still got bruises from Chara's crosschecks in 2013.
Here's the great news, guys.
Jared Cowan
and his contract
may be
this may be
the best part
of the Dion Phaneuf deal
and Brandon Pridham
everybody send him
a gift basket.
Yes.
Everyone.
We have talked about this before.
He's the
one of the Leafs assistant GMs.
Kyle Dubaskit's talked a lot
talked about a lot
because he's
you know at the forefront
of analytics.
He's young.
He's gorgeous.
And then there's Mark Hunter
you know the guru
of all draft picks
and there's Brandon Pridham
who I couldn't pick out of a line.
I don't even know what he looks like.
But he manages the Leafs cap.
And he used to work for the NHL.
And he knows all kinds of...
They kind of market him like a young Lamorello
in terms of knowing all kinds of shenanigans you can do.
Please, Adam, read to me the shenaniganery
going on with the Jared Cowan deal.
Because everyone keeps trying to tell me about it
and I don't understand it.
First, let me context this.
So we know that Jared Cowan
was a fairly highly touted defenseman.
Enough that the Ottawa Senators
gave him a pretty big contract.
He's making $3.1 million a year.
Top 10 pick the same year Kadri was picked.
Right.
And did quite well in the NHL
until he had a hip problem,
which is now,
he's now into his fourth year
with the same hip problem.
And hernia surgery.
I mean...
Hernia surgery.
You want an idea of what a hip problem
can do to a career?
Carl Gunnarsson is,
I mean,
people ripped on that trade at the time,
including me,
the Gunnarsson for Polak trade.
He's not the same player.
He's not.
And that's because he's messed up his hip.
Yeah.
And it's so much of your movement.
It's so much of your shifting, especially as a defenseman, that's really hard.
You know, as Ottawa Senators fans, I think rightly so.
We're like, this guy stinks.
But it's probably because of injuries, not because he stinks.
Yeah.
I mean, he was big, so mobility was an issue anyway.
And I mean, you know, you take anything out of his mobility, he's done.
Exactly.
Now, there is a, I don't know how this is structured, but because Jared is so young,
And this is thanks to Chris Johnson, who finally explained it properly at Sportsnet.ca.
Support Chris.
He's the best.
Could be dealt before Monday's trade deadline because of an unusual quirk that gives any team that bought him out this summer a salary cap credit of $650,000.
How does that goofy crap even work?
So you're the Leafs, okay?
You're the Leafs.
And you have Leafs general manager up?
Yep.
Okay, so you've got Nathan Horton on long-term injury relief, okay?
Oh, I forgot about him!
You've got...
5.3 million.
So then you've got Stefan Robita, so now you're up to 8.3.
Now...
They don't have a salary cap.
They literally don't.
Now you buy out Jared Callen, okay?
Now you buy out Jared Callen this summer.
You're up over 9 million, right?
Well, close to it.
Close to about 9 million.
How much money is left on Tim Gleason's deal?
1.8 or 1.3 for the next two years?
I think it's 1.3.
Jesse's on it
1.8
Wow
God
That sucks
Dave Nones
Dave Nones
Sucked
He really just sucked
It now no longer matters
And that's what's so great
It no longer matters
By 8 million dollars
That's how
That's how much
That no longer matters
And that's so
That is one of the
I think that is the crown
Jewel of that trade
Now it might be
Tobias Lindholm
He was really
He was great when we went
And saw him in the Marlies
Lindberg
Lind something
It's okay, there's a Lindholm on the Ducks
Does he explain why
They get a credit?
No
I'm sure he does if you just read
No, it doesn't
I'm sure he does, no I'm kidding
Okay, so, once again
That's amazing
Judah earned $4.5 million salary
In his final year of a back-loaded deal
Since the cost to do so
Is only one-third of the remaining value
Because Cowan is under the age of 26
a team could get a rare $650,000 cap credit in 2016-17
and assume a cap hit of $750,000 the year after.
Oh, so they would get relief next year.
And then it would go against them the next year.
So you're just delaying things.
So, yeah, but I mean, if you're a team like Chicago or even Pittsburgh.
Or Pittsburgh.
Who could actually probably use another defenseman, but wow.
Interesting.
Why is that so dumb?
That's dumb.
You shouldn't be able to do that.
Chris doesn't explain it.
He doesn't explain it.
Doesn't explain it.
Doesn't explain it at all.
Oh.
Yeah.
So, I'm just saying, that might be the crown jewel right there.
So you think, you're leaning more on the side of the Leafs can trade him.
Yeah.
And, you know, I guess the thing is, he's got one year left.
And what's...
He's not going to play on the Leafs.
No.
What's $700,000
When you've got that much money
In injury relief
It's nothing
And like if you are the Blackhawks
And you are absolutely so crunched
So crunched
Do you say
To yourselves
You know what it is $700,000
Out of our cap in two years
But how about we just cross that bridge
When we get there
Wouldn't you? I would
I would
I wonder
Yeah, you just got to think of all the cap crunch teams
And there are a lot
Pittsburgh also comes to mind again
Pittsburgh comes to mind a lot
They're interesting
Because they've been relatively quiet
And Jim Rutherford's been all about trying to make that team win
Forcing them to win somehow
Well, they've been doing a good job recently
Except that stinker against the Bruins
Well, they finally have a proper coach
It's so weird
So we have all these
Expiring deals
That we think are on their way out the door
Potentially Michael Grabner
Potentially P.A.
No one's even mentioning Michael Grabner
No, it's weird
Do people not want him?
But he's fast
And you need that guy, you need Grabner in the playoffs
You need a guy like him
Who can play on the fourth line
You're totally cool putting Grabner on the fourth line
But he'll kill penalties
And if you need a guy out there who's just going to whiz by everybody
When they're all hurt
Listen to the conversation we're all having
How can you possibly think
With only Friday, Saturday, and Sunday remaining
Before Monday's trade deadline
How can you possibly think
Nothing is going to happen that day
Even with Ladd gone
And let's pretend he's the biggest fish available
He's the Antoine Vermette of this year
Oh man
Last year was so bad
I know, I know
But how can you say that?
You can't
There's still so much
And that's just the Leafs
It's just the Leafs
what if
who are
the teams not in the playoffs
right now
Edmonton doesn't really
have much they can sell
again
again
Columbus might be able
to sell a couple guys
the Leafs certainly
oh the Flames have
a bunch of guys
in the block
Vancouver's falling
further and further
out of the picture
oh I'm sorry
did Granlin not help them
not yet
maybe it's too early
oh yeah
how dare you
how dare you
Minnesota is
probably going to try
to get back in the picture
And they're not that far out
Arizona
Bodker is a name
That keeps coming up
Buffalo
Deal guys
They already did
Bodker
Bodker was going to
Resign
Is that how you say that?
Is it Bodker?
Yeah
Yeah Bodker
Was going to resign there
But apparently
Last minute the Coyotes
Pulled the deal
And I don't know what that
I read he wants
Like six million bucks
Okay
That's what I'd pull the deal to
Shut up Michael
Later
Sens are going to go for it
They're only four points out
Flyers are only five points out
I mean so are the Canadians
But
LOL Canadians
You can't actually think
You're gonna
Close that gap
No
Then again they're silly
If I'm the Leafs
I definitely let them think that
Yep
Oh totally
And I think
I think Bergevin
Kind of has to do something
Because of that press conference
That he had
Where he doubled down on
Tarion
And he was like
You know
This is our guy
This is our guy
He's not
He's not going anywhere
I think he has to do
Everything he can
to support his own point of view.
Otherwise, that is stuck directly to him
as soon as the season ends.
It's on.
He made it.
He took it off Tarion and made it about Bergevin.
Like, ah.
So if I'm Bergevin, I'm going, damn.
I got an issue here.
I got to deal with this.
I'm going to make a trade.
He was saying, zut.
Zut, exactly.
Zut.
En francais.
Zut LL.
Someone actually tweeted me.
Steve, listen to the last show.
The way you say Islanders in French
is just Islanders
and I'm like
I know
we didn't actually
anyway
Habiton
the
the last thing I want to do
before we leave
Sportsnet 590
the fan
and then you can go to
sportsnet.ca
to download the rest of the show
or subscribe on iTunes
if you prefer
where I can swear
about Jean-Michel Lyles
Jonathan Drouin
looks like
maybe
possibly
I mean
Iserman came out
there's the big fish
yeah
we got him right there
well and
here's the thing about Drouin
that scares me. Everybody seems
to want Drouin, and there seems
to be, what was it, 10 to 15 teams
in on him? I heard 20, so...
Yeah, so everybody wants the guy.
Why wouldn't you want him? Okay,
but what
then... First off, the attitude's
a little scary to me. The second
thing that freaks me out about him
is that, what do you
then have to give up?
Because from what I'm hearing,
I'm not an insider,
what I'm hearing you have to give up comparable
value which is one of your top prospects
so why would you swap top prospect
for top prospect
you know who's got some prospects
to spare and a ton of
picks to spare
especially next year
and
also don't seem
to really care about attitude issues
the Sabres
that's a team that strikes me as a team that
makes a lot of sense for Drew
Evander Kane and Drew
Oh, I'm sure they'd be great at the bars together.
I've spoken to him, and I was like, what a good guy.
And then that Tim Horton story comes out.
And then there's all the stuff about his dad.
I mean, Buffalo is willing to take on some shenanigans, right?
That, to me, is a perfect fit.
I don't know if they're one of the teams in.
I'm just imagining that picture of Tim Murray.
take that picture of Tim Murray
and then take the Buffalo Sabres out
for beers at the
end of season dinner and just have Tim Murray
at the head of the table screaming internally
I mean just wow
but yeah Drouin seems to make the most
sense there where else does he make sense
and what do you
do you give up a top prospect for him
or do you want to give up do you want to
Do you want to keep Tampa to players that are playing now
and say, listen, Steve, your time to win is coming up.
You need a great defenseman.
We've got this great defenseman.
We've got this great power forward.
We've got something.
That, to me, makes a little bit more sense.
Dealing top prospects for top prospects,
unless you really, really, really believe in him,
and I don't know that he's shown at the NHL level
that you can quite yet, doesn't mean he won't.
He's had 87 games, and he's had 40-something points.
Pretty good.
He also hasn't played a hockey game in quite a while.
There's that.
And also, the Lightning are so crunched against the cap.
So you almost have to take on salary with Drouin.
Or, like, it's weird.
Like, what do you give up other than picks?
But if you're the Lightning, you want to add.
Because you're going for it, aren't you?
Jared Cowan.
Jared Cowan.
Drouin.
Straight up.
Whoa!
Let's do it.
Grabner.
Just saying.
He would fit in quite well with Tampa's style.
I don't even know if they could afford him.
I don't think they could.
Grabner makes $3 million.
I think that might be...
Well, you could retain on the rest of his salary if you wanted to.
And this is the thing.
Again, listen to this discussion.
There's so much to be determined still.
It's exciting.
We have five guys they've got to get rid of before Monday.
Do they get rid of them all?
Who are the five?
Grabner, UFA.
Maybe.
Parenteau, UFA.
Definitely.
Archabello, UFA.
No.
Brad Boyes, UFA.
clued in UFA.
Are those the only five? No, come on.
Are those really?
Well, I'll be.
So Jesse had the general furniture page open.
I just want you to know that. And Steve was like, no!
You can't read that. You've never been
so surprised by something you were like,
I'm not reading it. Oh, I'm sorry.
You're right. No, I don't
trust Jesse. And the lost, forgotten
UFA, James Reimer. Should I get you guys?
Oh, yeah. There's another
another big one
is he gonna be gone
and maybe they keep him
and find a way
to trade Bernier
yeah
you know what I'm surprised about
you know what I'm surprised about
what are you surprised about
I am kinda surprised
about Dustin Bufflin
can I see
the Winnipeg Jets
page
just to make sure
that he's signed
I just wanna make sure
I mean we did tell him
but like he needs to see
yeah
is there a 10-70% chance
that he's signed
or is it 100%
are we sure
I'm thinking 120
by the way
shout out to everybody
that listened to last show
and said thank god
neither of you
our accountants.
People are really upset about
that math thing. Well, what do they expect?
We've been open about
the fact that we suck at math. Anyway, we've got to go on SportsNet
590 The Fan, this podcast brought to you
by Panago Pizza. It is, after all,
what is on the inside that counts.
And it should be Panago Pizza that's on the inside.
We will be available at
sportsnet.ca
or you can find us on SoundCloud,
Podstitcher, wherever it is
you listen. Subscribe to the show. It is the Steve Dangle
podcast. We will see you next week,
the day after the trade deadline.
The day after tomorrow.
Nope. In a few days.
That's not.
We haven't even got to
a couple major
developments in the
NHL.
It's hilarious that we're this far into the show
and we still haven't talked about Kovalchuk.
I love it.
That's crazy.
From what I understand about Ilya
Kovalchuk,
SKA
St. Petersburg, your team
My team upset with him
Over his dip in performance this year
Although he was still, I think, top 10 in scoring
So what?
You pay Kovalchuk to be number one
And no other option
Right, and then they were upset with his performance
In the first game of the Gagarin Cup playoffs
So they bench him
And then they say, by the way, you're not playing in game 3
And you're probably not going to play in game 4 either
So he leaves the team
Yes, and it's funny
The person who broke this news
I'll give it a shot
Pronouncing your name
Ivis Kolnins
I believe out of Latvia
Do Russians just name people to make it as hard as possible?
No, Russians don't
Latvians do
Let me one up my neighbor on how hard it is to pronounce my name
Oh yes
I used to hate when I did the KHL highlights
Zemgis Kurslevskis
Remember going through the Austrian team
when the Olympics were started?
They all sound like
We kept pronouncing them like the name
of all the dildos from Eurotrip.
Bring on the Fliegenhofer!
Honestly?
This is clearly not the radio portion.
I felt like we were
looking at the big book of Swedish
names, because it sounds like how Swedish
names should sound, but it was more, Swedish
names don't sound like that. I'm trying to
look for the tweet, I can't find it, but anyway,
Ives Kohns,
yes, oh, okay, good, he's
embedded in the Sportsnet story. I believe
he's a listener of the show. Oh, is he?
Tweets all the time.
Kovalchuk has told SKA, if he's
not on the roster in two days
time, he's terminating
his contract and heading to North America.
Now, I believe him,
and I don't blame him, because the ruble, by the way,
has taken a hit that is why i believe it well one it came from elvin's please dm me how the
hell to say your name uh but two the ruble sucks and he left for money he sure did however i will
say one thing before we get to jesse because i cut him off um you have to understand the khl
this is not the first time the league leading scorer or team's best player or captain was
healthy scratched.
In fact, during the lockout year that I was doing
highlights, that happened to Radulov.
But Radulov
is crazy.
Maybe Kovalchuk's crazy.
Okay, maybe. Maybe.
According to Ottawa Ghost, he's fucking crazy.
Let's get to our first question.
Kovalchuk, are you fucking nuts turning down $100 million?
That's still my favorite Ottawa Ghost.
Is it a usual thing that he has
his own right to terminate his contract
As a player
I think it's a KHL thing
You can make up
Whatever the hell you want
In Wonderland
Yeah you can
It's Russia
Fair
I'm very merry on birthday
To you
They can just not pay you
They can just not pay you
For doing video highlights
Yeah legalities in Russia
Are
They're legal
Excuse me while I have
A spoonful of honey
That's only funny on video
The legal suggestion
Is
Legals
Legalities are merely
A suggestion there
It's merely like
It would be a good idea
Yeah, we'll pay you – I don't know.
You plan on dying in the next five months?
What's your problem?
Russian math is like my math.
Okay.
No, I'm kidding.
I mean, but honestly –
No, I think your math is pretty exemplary in comparison.
What's interesting about this is there's the geopolitical landscape.
Because of the things that Russia did in Ukraine, the sanctions against them worldwide by the UN have done a real number on the ruble.
And that was before oil crashed.
So now oil is crashing.
And the Saudis and all the OPEC nations are saying, well, countries like Canada, you might have to get out of producing oil as an industry because it's that low.
Oh, smokes.
Yeah, and Russia, by the way, one of the major producers of oil in the world.
So there's that too.
So the ruble has fallen that far that Kovalchuk leaving all that money on the table when he did turned out probably to be a quite ruinous financial situation.
I don't have the math, but I'm going with probably.
$77 million.
You could have called that, though, when he walked away from it.
So it's interesting that he did.
I mean, what was he expecting, right?
What was he expecting?
And, I mean, it's not as though anybody could have predicted
that the ruble would have fallen this far.
But in American history, we hadn't seen a crash like that since the 30s.
So chances are it wasn't going to happen again soon.
I just Googled it.
Okay, so Andre and I, I think this was the year before we did highlights
for the KHL, or it was right before.
I think back then
We were paid in rubles
That
He converted to American dollars
Or they converted to American dollars or whatever
Back then it was
33 rubles to the American dollar
You know what it is right now?
75
And a half
Oh
Holy smokes
I mean the Canadian dollar is taking a dip
Sure
But the ruble has been bad
That's insane
But like I said
Before oil bottomed out
The ruble was bad
So just imagine
Oh my goodness
Yeah
Yeah that's really bad
So can you imagine then
All the money Kovalchuk
Could have made
77 million dollars
Because if the ruble stayed the same
He actually
That actually would have been a smart deal
Totally
He would have made
All that money in like four years
And then gone back to North America
And made new money
But whoever gave him that advice
Stupid
Might have been him
For him to come back, the way I've understood it, and I've tried to read up as much as I can, for him to come back, he would either have to sit out an entire season from professional hockey period, or he comes back and gets all the approval every governor in the NHL has to approve him.
Which I have a hard time believing they would do.
It's called a voluntary retirement versus, voluntary retirement is pre-35, I believe.
Yeah, and people keep talking about, you know, would he have to clear waivers?
No, I don't think he would.
I don't know the answer to that.
I don't think he would either.
I have a hard time, though.
Like, let's pretend, making up a scenario,
let's pretend the Sharks want to sign Kovalchuk.
If I'm the Ducks or the Kings, why would I let them do that?
All I have to do is say no, and it is not so.
Like, why would I let a divisional rival who's close to me in the standings do that?
All I have to do is be a dick and say no.
If the Habs want Kovalchuk and I'm the Leafs, all I got to do is go, nope.
And you no longer have Kovalchuk.
His choice is either everybody approves his reverse retirement papers or he returns in 2018, 2019 as an unrestricted free agent.
So that's two seasons.
Why is that two seasons?
Jeez.
That's when I think the old contract is up.
But Kovalchuk said he's going to go to North America
According to this tweet
Which
If he sits out a full calendar year
He can return to the NHL as a UFA
As long as he gets consent from the devils
I just have a hard time
I have a hard time believing the governors would want him to sit out
I think
Hold on
I think Gary Benton pulls those guys into a room
And he says listen
I know that this is a divisional rival
Whoever team he ends up with
Maybe he ends up with New Jersey
right? Because he seemed happy there
until he left
so let's say he has to go to New Jersey
and New York has a problem with it
if I'm Gary Bettman I go listen
we are trying to sell a game here
and this guy is an absolute
unmitigated superstar and this is
a big story. We need
him and we want to send a message to the
KHL that we are in fact better
and apparently as I was reading
today the KHL
players will not be on Team Russia at the World Cup
which we're getting to
Which we're going to talk about that in a sec too.
So imagine that. Imagine that coup.
So I think that he does get the approval.
Because I think the governors wisen up and go, yeah, true.
The least likely team he signs with and for approval,
the team most likely to...
Retain his rights.
No, no, no.
The team most likely that governors would shut down, I think, would be the Kings.
Because supposedly they were the runners-up in the Kovalchuk sweepstakes.
and people were not
happy with how the
Mike Richards thing went.
But the thing is
from what I understand, if he comes back
and they get approval, the rights are still the Devils.
So they can trade him, but I don't think
he's an unrestricted free agent.
That's so weird.
I believe it belongs to the Devils.
You can correct me on that and hate me for that.
But I believe that's what I read.
Also, you've got to be confident
you're getting Ilya Kovalchuk back, man.
Yeah, because I don't know that you are.
I don't know who you are either.
So, all that aside, interesting story.
I do think, there's no way the NHL governors let him sit out two years.
There's just no way.
There's absolutely no way.
Never know.
I just don't see it.
However, only because he's a superstar can they do that.
And it hasn't happened yet.
But I think that it's bigger.
Yeah, it hasn't happened yet.
But I think this is a big story that the NHL wants to show its dominance over the KHL.
and getting to the fact that KHL players will not be allowed in the World Cup
is another reason why I believe that the NHL wants to do this.
The NHL wants to show its dominance.
You're the National Hockey League.
You are the best in the world.
There is a lot of prick-waving, as they say.
Hey, non-radio part of the show.
One thing Andre always said,
Andre Osichenko, who obviously I worked on some KHL stuff with him for many years,
still keep in touch,
One thing he said for a long time was SKA St. Petersburg has more money than the Leafs.
Now, he never showed me any numbers to back that up.
But I believe the company that owns SKA St. Petersburg is Gazprom, which is like the big—
Oil company.
In Russia.
Government-owned, I believe.
So they just, here comes the money.
Here we go.
Just throw it at whatever you want.
So it's like all those big soccer teams where oil companies, just oil kings are selling them.
Basically.
Running billions.
Yeah, it doesn't matter if they make a profit.
Although most of them do.
When it comes to the KHL and money, what do we know for certain?
It's not about the money.
Well, we know shenanigans.
Oh, shenanigans for sure.
The league doesn't care about making money.
But also shenanigans.
I would not be surprised.
Because remember, this has two days to work itself out.
I would not be surprised if the big old duffel bag gets dropped off at his door.
Or if they just go, listen, you take this, now shut up.
play score goal I wouldn't be surprised I wouldn't be surprised oh yeah we
renegotiate it's fine it's about the hockey maybe he's a hockey player he
play hockey yeah exactly I wouldn't be surprised man well I want to talk about
the World Cup here yes oh what about it I wanted to could Kovalchuk renounce his
Russian citizenship and join team some of Europe uh-huh well he might get to
play on some of russia i'm crow indian though team some of oh my god we have two we have three
some of north america some of europe now some of russia no it's it's some of under 23 some of
under 23 and stupider yeah right because it's if you're under 23 you can be selected to canada
first right neilander can you yeah william neilander can play for team sweden but he doesn't
Connor McDavid
Connor McDavid
No it's not even
If he doesn't make it
Team
Under 23 is only
North America
Yeah
So Connor McDavid
Cannot play for Canada
He has to play
For team under 23
But Neil Andrew
Can play for Sweden
Absolutely
Yeah
No problem Adam
Why?
What seems confusing
About that?
What's wrong about that?
This is
By the way
The World Cup format
Is the easiest format
To follow
Country
Players
Country
Players
No I don't know
That doesn't make sense
Oh my god
This is just
I saw a report
I saw a report
somebody was like
yeah definitely
Canadians are catching
World Cup fever
I'm like no they're
effing not
I have not heard
from one single person
not one person
is tweeting
sure can't wait
for that World Cup
they might
they might
I mean
whenever the hockey season
comes around
I get excited
yeah and they're doing it
smartly because they're
putting it right in the
middle of training camp
there you go
there you go
I'm sure it'll be fun
to watch
but it is team
some of Russia
For now
If Radulov is not playing
Then it's not Team Russia
Or Kovalchuk
Like Russia
They're a great hockey country
But I don't know if they have enough
NHL players to ice a really good team
I don't know either
The first few lines will be great
Sure
But I mean they weren't even
They weren't even dominant at the Olympics
With the whole team
They're also
I don't like how they're coached
I just don't think they're coached well
And they have been for a very long time
anyway what a what a catastrophe well it's only the first 16 players who will only be from the
nhl they said they might consider the rest of the roster will be khl players you know what an nhl gm
an anonymous nhl gm recently took flack for uh talking about being half pregnant
and people were saying that nhl gm is a dumbass correct however how many other nhl executives
think that way all of them like listen to this shit that we're talking about it must be like
imagine being an outsider and all of a sudden for whatever reason you become an nhl exec and
you think like a normal human being and you go to a governor's meeting that must just be a total
mind fuck right like that's got to be crazy um and i i wonder if the leafs now with their brain
trust because i truly believe the leafs have the smartest group of hockey minds in the world
right now
as they effing should
they absolutely
should have that
I believe
they must just go
to these jam meetings
and laugh
and laugh
and laugh
at the way these
not in front of people
but you know
later on in the hotel room
when you're having
a cocktail
with Brendan Shanahan
and you're going
oh my god
did you hear what
Jim Benning just said
I think
part of Brendan Shanahan's
charm
is he's got such a good
poker face
yeah
so he can just
hear you say
the dumbest thing
in the world
I mean he follows me
on Twitter, so. He could just hear you
say the dumbest thing in the world
and just be like, hmm, okay.
On the surface and inside.
He's like the inverse of
Tim Murray. Yep. I saw him eating popcorn
at the camera shot to him on Tuesday night.
He's eating popcorn at the game.
Oh, that was such an unfortunate shot.
I didn't think so. I was like, he's even got his poker face on
while he's eating popcorn. That's true. Sorry, I was on my phone.
I was trying to look up a Ryan
Lambert tweet. He posted a quote,
an idiotic quote from an NHL
exec and he's like this is uh just the latest in a series called literally anybody could be an NHL
exec I think that was wasn't that a Jim Benning quote I don't remember well do you want the full
world cup quote yeah oh great from who um Alexei Zamnov who's the delegation he's the guy in charge
of the Russian team used to be a leaf killer so he told Sportsnet right now we're going to put 16
players from the NHL on the roster for the remaining seven spots we'll discuss maybe some
players from the KHL too right now it's most important for us to make the list of 16 this is
very interesting because the Russians don't have a huge North American pool and you really got to
look at North America I wonder if guys in the AHL have a shot and I think of two Leafs Renat
Valiev on D
and Nikita Soshnikov up front
and Zaitsev by the way
yeah because he won't be in the
KHL
now is he under the he's 23
no it doesn't matter that's another insufferable
thing about the Leafs by the way they're not going to be in the
playoffs and they're going to be talked about all
spring all
spring because
Zaitsev
is going to sign I think as
soon as it's after April 30th
and his KHL contracts up he can sign
And then Vessi
And then we get into the Vessi talk
And then who else is available in college
Who else we got
Who else wants to make money
Morgan Rielly, we got Morgan Rielly contract talk
How about that, Peter Holland
Josh Levo, Garrett Sparks
The negotiations have started for Morgan Rielly
Nazem Khadri
Yeah
And if Reimer does not move, that's going to become a big deal
Camera's off, just so you know
Okay
Well and
What's
Okay so what's the
For Morgan Rielly
While we're on it
And then we gotta move on quickly
Cause we gotta wrap up the show here
Of course
Morgan Rielly
Do you go along with him?
I think that's the Leafs mantra
I don't think you go
Bridge
They went along with Gardner
I think Gardner was older
Than Rielly
But Gardner was a smart deal
In retrospect
Turned out to be great
Both sides
I mean
Like I mean
That's what the deal should be
It should work for both
Right now it's a fair deal
Gardner is making about what Gardner should make
I think
But it could potentially become good and great
You know what I mean
Like
He's good
Four million bucks
Doesn't knock my socks off
It's just good
But it could potentially be very good
That's all I'm excited about
Riley though
If you can get him to a similar deal
do we all
who thinks Morgan Riley
is not going to be better
than Jake Gardner one day
oh we know
maybe is
it's not even an insult
to Gardner
no
Morgan Riley's just
one of those players
ridiculous
yeah
it's going to be
very interesting
I think they go long
I think they try to go five
I want to mention
first off
skate to great.org
obviously text
dangle to 41010
not 41010 to dangle
as I said last episode
oh
yeah
I was exhausted
you were exhausted
I read that tweet
and I went
what's wrong with that
I didn't understand
until you just said it now
drop all your
used hockey equipment
off at one of the
100 donation centers
across the country
for skate2great.org
it is for kids
who can't afford
to play hockey
by the way
hockey is an expensive game
so there's a lot of kids
that want to play
that can't afford it
a lot of kids from
homes that might live
down the street from you
so you know
that would really
really go to
it goes to a great cause
it goes to a great place
they're great people
the other thing I want to mention
is Hockey Night in Cinema
at the Mayfair
Hockey Night in Cinema
you said it like
Buddy from
Inglourious Bastards
and it's going to be
in Ottawa
and it's going to be
the second time
the Leafs play
Dion Phaneuf
but it will be in Ottawa
so it will basically
be a Leafs home game
anyway
but we'll be at a cinema
arrow
and I actually
had somebody tweet me
and say
listen I
just moved
from an apartment
across the street
from there
to Oshawa
oh no
because I initially
what I thought he said
was I just rented
an apartment there
because I kind of
skimmed on the tweet
and I'm like
well after party
at your house
and he was like
yeah I would have
but I can't
so he lives near you
one of the
one of the
one of the people
from Dangle Navy
who was at the Marley's game
which did we even
bring that up
we still haven't
talked about that
oh my goodness
which was incredible
one of them was like
hey I was the guy
who posted on the
Facebook group
offering people a ride
oh
so I mean
no and I even
told him this
I'm like
I didn't really want to advertise that because, you know, that's kind of weird, right?
It's not weird.
If you want to talk to this person.
How is that weird?
Okay, you go get in a stranger's car.
Well, I own a car, so I'm okay.
You see?
Hey, man, if I wanted to go.
Adam's like, what's the problem?
You just speak to the driver and he takes you to where you want to go?
He wears a nice hat.
You just tell him where you want to go and he parks in the car park.
In the car hold.
And then you turn on the telly,
you put down the TV box,
and you watch a program.
A program.
Arrow, yes, Arrow.
Adam's had a hard life.
Have you watched Carly?
So March 12th, Steve's birthday,
hockey night in cinema,
Mayfair, Ottawa.
If you want to be there, be there.
And also, we should talk Dangle Navy,
Marley's game.
For anybody that did come out,
it was amazing.
I want to set this up,
and then I'm going to let Steve and Jesse
to take it, but we walk out
of the first
intermission.
We walk out
and we walk out
because Steve had tweeted that, you know, meet us at our
section, section 120.
And there
is at least 40 people there
waiting for us.
And we didn't get back to our seats until
three minutes left in the second period.
Yeah, it was so great. We sat down and
then like a couple minutes later the horn went
and I went, what?
What?
What is this?
And then there were a bunch after the game.
And what was really funny is there was this huge group of kids
who just saw me taking pictures with people with a Marley's jersey on.
And they all got me to sign their shirts
because they definitely thought I was a player.
Oh, yeah.
That was at the end of the game.
Yes.
I felt bad.
And their parents were there.
I'm like, I'm not a player.
Look at me.
Look at me.
So they have some random person just sign their jersey
and they'll never know who it was.
When Steve is on a hockey night in Canada one day,
they'll hold back and be like,
I have that autograph.
Can we talk about Steve's autograph, by the way?
Oh, the worst autograph on earth.
Okay, so no one takes longer than Steve Dangle
to sign something.
Because I don't practice my autograph
because I'm not conceited.
I don't know.
I don't think I've ever practiced my autograph.
Oh, you want to grow some corn
while Steve signs something?
You got enough time.
I believe ancient Mesopotamia.
What is that where you went with that?
Ancient Mesopotamia was founded and fell in the time it took Steve to write his signature.
I'm going on my phone.
The internet's not mean to me.
Oh, shit.
And by the way, when Steve does finish his signature, it does look like a four-year-old.
It's not even good.
It's not even like he took all of that time to make this great signature.
It's shit.
It got a shitty signature.
I also find it nice that you put dangle in quotes as though people wouldn't know if you didn't put quotes in there.
Man, I don't know how to do it.
Well, and then you get Jesse, who's, it just looks like a butterfly.
It's JB.
He basically took Justin Bieber's, like, thing.
It's J, it's like a cursive J, cursive B, and then he puts, like, a little squiggle in the middle, and I go, what's that?
And you go, it's the rest of my name.
I don't know, it's fucking not.
And then Adam has the great professional signature.
Well, it's because my A, you just, you know how you make a star on a paper?
That's how you make an A.
So, because I'm a star, so it's like an A, because I'm an effing superstar.
You're Cardinal official.
Basically.
Watch me do it.
Watch me do it.
Watch me do it.
Baby, I'm a star.
So if you ever want to kill five hours, ask Steve to sign something.
Yeah, but if you want it done in a timely fashion, Jesse and I are good, safe bets.
Although we're no Steve Dangle.
Well, if you want, I'll come up with a new one.
I can't wait, by the way, for everybody to tweet their Steve Dangle autographs at us.
Just so everybody can see it.
And post it on Reddit, too, if you don't mind.
That's how many years you grew in between you not getting the Oscar and when it was done.
What grade are your kids in now?
I was just trying to be nice.
People ask me to sign a thing and I'm honored and flattered and I just signed it for them.
And then you make fun of me because it's shit, apparently.
My car lease is up.
Listen, I am sorry for burdening you all with my kindness.
What takes longer?
A Game of Monopoly or Steve's Signature
I mean seriously
Or how about an episode of Game of Thrones
How about the Game of Thrones intro
Game of Thrones intro or Steve's Signature
I would actually give it
To the Game of Thrones intro
But just barely
One wiener next to another wiener
Wiener, wiener, wiener
Do you guys want a headline?
Yeah we do
And we actually have a new feature
on the show that we're starting today.
If this is the one you message me on Facebook,
I'm going to come across this board and fuck you up.
And it's the best feature ever.
Is it a guessing game?
It's the best feature ever.
It's kind of a guessing game,
but let's start with the NHL headline.
If it's the one you said, I'm not doing it.
I am boycotting my own show.
I will fucking walk out of that.
This is from Random Action on Reddit.
John Hines, former head coach of Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Penguins.
Current New Jersey Devils head coach.
Current head coach of the New Jersey Devils.
is in Pittsburgh to play against the Penguins.
John Skrein?
John Hines.
John Hines.
Why don't I get Skrein?
What's the headline?
Skrein.
Oh.
Sorry.
So he's the former Penguins minor league coach.
He's it.
AHL coach.
And now he's coaching the Devils.
And he's in Pittsburgh to play against the Penguins.
And what's his name?
John Hines?
John Hines.
Catching up.
Hold on.
Hines 57.
Hines is from Pittsburgh.
Hines the...
There's Hines lofts.
The Hines family owns the Steelers
Well no they don't own the Steelers
They own the naming rights to the stadium
Isn't Joe Biden married to the heiress
Of Hines
And he's from Scranton
I thought you would know this Adam
I don't know
By the way I know who owns the Steelers
Don't tweet me it's the Roonies
The office was filmed in Scranton
Is that a hint? I don't know
Maybe it's not.
Damn, Jesse.
Did you understand
catching up, by the way?
Did you know what you were saying?
Yeah, catching up.
Did you know the Pittsburgh connection to ketchup, though?
No.
It just works even better.
Yeah.
Well, apparently it's office.
Maybe Heinz site?
2020?
But now he's saying ketchup, though.
Or now he's saying office.
Fuck.
Fuck it.
Catching up is what I say.
What's his name again?
John?
John Hines.
I'm going to go with hindsight.
I'm going to go with parkour.
Parkour, parkour.
What is it?
What's your final guess, Steve?
Catching up.
They went with Hines ketchup.
No!
Hines's ketchup.
Where is this from?
It's like an old headline he took a screen cap of.
Thank you, Random Action.
Man, I miss the NHL.com.
How much fun is headlines?
You know what?
When they fix the atrocity that is NHL.com, we'll probably get them back.
I don't know, man.
No one's happy with this.
No, man.
Literally no one.
We don't want advanced stats, and we don't want fancy headlines, Steve.
Gary Bettman knows us.
He knows us.
Down Goes Brown made fun of him.
By the way, Down Goes Brown tweets a couple times a week.
Or tweets.
Writes a couple times a week for Sportsnet now.
Amazing.
One of the better writers out there.
Nice little coup.
Probably one of the best.
Oh, yeah.
Just saying.
Love him.
He's pretty good.
Jesse?
So, how do we play this game?
This game is much like NHL headlines.
What is this fucking game?
This game...
Can you please frame this?
So, I found out today that Jesse follows every NHL team on Instagram.
No, no, no.
God damn it, no.
We're not doing this.
We are not looking at other teams.
Don't put this evil on me, Jesse Blake.
Don't you put this evil on me.
I found this out because Jesse sent us a screen cap of the Buffalo Sabres Instagram account,
Which says the Buffalo Sabres, with the trade, now have 20 draft picks over the next two years.
Just like the Leafs do.
The Leafs have 12 this year, 8 next year.
Sabres, I don't care.
But you got 20 and 20.
And so, and I said, you follow every team, including the Flyers?
He's like, yeah.
And then he sends us a picture of a Washington Capitals in-game promotion.
Which is a little, I believe, was it a bobblehead?
A little Holt Beast doll.
A little Holt Beast doll
So there's a beast wearing Holt Beast's jersey
And it's a doll
And they give that out
And I said oh you know what would be fun
NHL in game promotion of the day
And Steve hates this idea
I'm just not
How do I set up the guessing game
By abandoning it and doing something else
I think you give a couple hints
And then we have to kind of
We kind of have to guess
We are not doing this
every fucking show.
You have got to be kidding me.
No way are we doing this.
What actual problem is this?
What do you have against this?
This is good.
This is a good idea.
Why is this a bad idea?
You know what's going to take less time
than the stupid-ass ideas?
My autograph.
All right, all right.
So, the LA Kings.
No.
On February 27th.
They're running a little promotion.
God damn it, stop.
What is it?
On what day?
On February 27th, the day it doesn't really matter.
It's called Rock the Lights in an Evolved Experience.
What do you think this experience entails?
A pile of shit with Christmas lights on it.
I think they're going to get little wristbands,
and they're going to do a light show with the wristbands,
like a Coldplay concert.
Okay.
Or like Taylor Swift at the beginning of the Grammys.
Steve, what's your guess?
Glow sticks.
Who gives a shit?
What do you have against this?
Why do you not like this?
I don't understand.
Some of them are so great
And some of them are so stupid
They're so kitsy
At least there's one thing I know
Listen, we're three scouts right now
Two of you are raving about this young prospect
I gotta tell ya
I'm not as optimistic about the kid
But if you two think it's so great
I'll go along with it
I think people will agree with us
Shitting motherfucking
Glow sticks
hate you
Steve is that
what you're
I'm thinking
it's the wristband
what is the
rock the lights
experience
it's a god damn
close to
so
when the kings
play the sabers
you'll get
an exclusive
opportunity
to play
with the lights
in the stadium
so you'll download
the ripples app
onto your phone
before you get
to the game
and then you get
to play with the lights
what
yeah
like a person
actually in the
like everybody
who has the app
will get to do
something with the lights
no they won't
Yeah, that's what it says.
20,000 people get to play with the lights.
How is that going to work?
You get to direct the lights
in the stadium.
That's not going to result in a fire for sure.
I don't know what you're going to do.
Or they're lying to you and you straight up don't get it
and they'll just shut the lights out
and turn on a bunch of them weirdly and go,
look what you're doing, guys.
Like a three-year-old, but it's like, where are you?
I'm going to go with what Adam just said.
This in-game promotion is like a three-year-old
playing peek-a-boo.
And when you cover your eyes and go where did I go
Yeah when really you know
You can fucking crush that three year old at peekaboo
But you're letting them win a little bit
I like this game
But really if you tried you know you would just ruin their soul
See you know what Steve you know what we're doing
We're breaking down and we're analyzing this promotion
You know what
And it's I gotta be honest with you I think it's pretty stupid
I gotta admit
I did not know they were going with that
But
Because anybody that
is daft enough to believe that they're gonna
give you control of the lights in an NHL
arena. Come on.
Come the hell on. Unless it's one person.
They don't even want to give fans control of the
vote. Yeah, exactly.
They won't even let you pick a player.
Jesse is crying.
He's coming undone.
I've never seen
Jesse laugh this hard.
It's kind of funny.
Wow, he's actually, they're serious.
NHL in-game promotion.
I'm telling you, it's the new thing.
You know what, Jesse?
This is a real shitty idea, but you impressed me with the first one.
Congratulations.
Well, there you go!
Congratulations, you asshole.
Because I knew Jesse could pull it off.
Cry!
I knew Jesse could pull it off.
See?
See?
I'm not all that bad, huh?
Oh, cool, the Blackhawks scored.
Oh, they're showing a highlight pack.
Hey, hey, hey.
A little cred, please.
Not all that bad.
Props to Jesse.
Tweet your support to Jesse and Steve and I.
Tell us that you're for it.
And if you're against it...
And send us your promotions.
Send us your promotion
Do not include me and Steve on it though
Send Jesse the promotions
You know what, can I throw this idea out there to make this better
Minor league and junior promotions
Are probably way better
Or even better
Bonus marks if you can find a good KHL one
And translate it
Good luck
You come game, you get to keep Doug
But it has to be the week of
The same week of the podcast
You can't send us one from last year
If you do see something that's funky
or your team is doing something weird,
totally send it to at jesseblake on Twitter.
By the way, if you're not following Jesse,
you should be.
Not only does he take the coolest Instagram pictures ever,
he's also the raddest dude.
Yeah, if you want to see a guy throw up the deuces
and not smile in pictures.
That's true.
Jesse.
You smiled in a few pictures.
I was like, what the fuck?
Yeah, what happened?
He'll never smile in a picture with the two of us.
But sometimes when he's by himself or caught off guard,
you'll see the Jesse smile.
It's a great smile.
I think it's because we genuinely make him unhappy.
Well, wouldn't you be unhappy working with us?
Oh, absolutely.
I'd be miserable.
I mean, listen to me the last five minutes.
I hate you guys.
Not even just that.
Not even just that.
But like the amount, like we're all over the place, you and I.
We're both fly by the seat of our pants, people.
And then that leads a producer to like wrangle us in.
Yeah.
Just in real life.
Adam, you're an energy drink.
I'm frigging meth.
That's true.
Okay.
Fair.
Fair.
Let's party!
Hey, should we do the press conference?
Oh, my God, we haven't even done that?
The Presser S.D.P.
The Steve Dangle Press Conference.
This is Steve Dangle.
And I'm Adam Wilde.
Gillette's best blades can save you up to 50%
versus the other shave club's $9 per month plan.
That's right, Steve.
Close, comfortable, smooth,
and up to 50% off versus the other shave club.
Sounds pretty smooth to me.
Get it?
No.
What?
I mean, I get it, but it's Adam.
Seriously, that was pretty good.
Join today at GilletteShaveClub.ca.
Adam.
What?
I think that was pretty solid.
That wasn't even in the script, man.
I know that.
Our first question is a video question, which Adam should bring up any moment right now.
Oh, here we go.
Let's put a face to it.
Listen, you assholes.
Did you send this?
Okay, I sent it on Facebook.
It's one of our main Reddit users.
And I'm going to try to get it up to the camera as well.
Hey, Steven Adam, you big dumb idiot
The camera is not recording
Oh, the camera is not recording?
No, it is not
The battery is dead
So here it comes
Ahoy, Dangle Navy
This is Fretzoff from Reddit and from Twitter
I have a press conference question for the Steve Dangle Podcast
Ahoy
But first, I'm going to have a little snack
If you don't mind
He's eating a pepper
That's vile
Yeah, chopper!
Oh, yeah.
Is your question, why would I do this to myself?
So, which minor league call-up has been the most pleasant surprise for the Leafs and, let's say, for the rest of the league?
First of all, you're disgusting.
Second of all, I like you, man.
You're my favorite.
We can be best friends.
No, you're gross.
He probably likes the promotions
I'm just saying
He probably likes the in-house promotions
Yeah, bell pepper night
Next Marley's game promotion
Bell pepper night
Can you imagine
If a bunch of our listeners
Get kicked out
Because they have
Fucking stupid bell peppers
And they throw them on the ice
After a goal
Oh my god
Don't throw that shit
Into the internet
Willy nilly
And there was enough people
At the last game
To like make an impact
We don't want to get our listeners banned, though.
But let's just say, if we had another Discount Marley's Night from a Dangle coupon...
They gave us a promo code, Jesse!
And we all went to the game, and we had bell peppers.
I hope to hell MLSC does not hear this.
And Nylander had a hat trick.
But Jesse is kidding.
And we all threw bell peppers on the ice.
Mr. Shanahan, Jesse's kidding.
When he scores.
Yeah, and Nylander is definitely allergic to bell peppers, and you put him in the hospital.
It'd be a cool thing if that would happen.
I hate you.
I hate you so much, Jesse.
I love you, Jesse.
I love you so much.
But he is kidding.
Back to your dumbass, disgusting question, you disgusting gross pepper eater.
I'm going to go with Josh Levo because he was playing good before he was even producing.
And he scored tonight.
The Leve dog.
As I looked up and saw.
He scored tonight, so I believe that gives him four goals in his last four games that he's played.
Because he's played a game, scored, played a game, scored, got injured, came back, played a game, scored, played a game, scored.
The guy who impressed me the most when I watched the Marlies, and he has been called up, but hasn't shown all that much, Brendan Leipzig.
Like, didn't he look sick, Adam?
He looked incredible.
Adam was raving about him the whole game.
I loved watching him, and I loved watching him because he very clearly is too good to be there.
I don't know about too good, but I thought the way he was sold, and as Point Total suggests,
he's a muck around, middle of the lineup, Brendan Gallagher-ish, but with less of a scoring touch type of guy.
You go and watch him play
He's a fantastic skater
And he drives and controls the play
He's the guy carrying it in
The guy that impressed me the most
Since we're on that subject
He did not get called up
But I want to bring him up anyway
The goal that impressed me the most
Was the Leipzig goal
But it was the setup before the goal
If you go back to the Marlies game that we watched
Connor Brown is at the Marlies blue line
And he gets crushed
But what he does do
Is he intelligently knows
Because he's got his head up
And because he's positioned properly
To bounce the puck off the glass
That puck then goes
I believe to Nylander
I don't remember
Or was it
It doesn't matter
It goes to one of the Marlies
Who then gets it to Leipzig
And it's in the back of the net
You gotta see it to know what I was talking about
But it was one of the smarter plays I've ever seen
And yeah, Leipzig gets credit for a beautiful goal
Because it was his second goal
But Connor Brown
Was never
Never out of position
And always
Did he have an all-star game? No
But that goal doesn't happen without Connor Brown
He didn't get hit, he took a hit
There is a difference
Out in the rest of the league
Gotta be Pasternak
Or Pasternak, however the hell you say it in Boston
He's found money for them
If they go into the playoffs
You see his two goals from the other night.
The penalty shot, diving across, friggin' like Bobby Orr.
Like, Bobby Orr!
It's got to be him, right?
I think so.
I think it's got to be him.
I know I'm forgetting someone because it's a 30-team league, but whatever.
What do the Edmonton Oilers do if they land the first overall pick again this year?
Tell themselves we're on the right track again.
I don't know.
I don't know.
You know what they do?
Waste a generation of talent.
I'm getting a little annoyed
I'm not going to lie
I'm getting a little annoyed
Do you trade Hopkins?
Do you trade Dreisaitl?
Isn't McClellan making it sound like it?
I bet Yak goes first
Why?
Does Yak get moved at the deadline?
He was playing really well with
Pouliot
Was it Pouliot?
Not Pouliot
Pouliot and McDavid
McDavid, yeah
I actually
I don't trade him
I trade the guy with value
Who's that?
Taylor Hall
But he's your best offensive player
Yeah I was going to say he's the best one
So what
You can turn him into
Something else
No I don't think anyone can afford Hall
Okay
Not just the cap hit
But like
I mean Jesus Lord
Look what they got for Andrew Ladd
Yeah
You're right
If Andrew Ladd is worth that
Hall's worth at least three firsts
Like come on
Yeah but
I'm thinking if I'm the Oilers
I want players that can play now
I want a young stud defenseman
Not everyone wants to give that up
not everybody has an offensive weapon like he is, though.
I don't know about teams.
I don't know how many teams out there
with two young stud defensemen there are.
The Leafs certainly have two.
Well, no.
I don't take that.
Here's a bounce-off question.
I don't think you can possibly get fair value.
No, I'm not saying Riley.
I'm not saying Riley.
I'm just saying I don't think you can possibly get fair value for Hall.
No, I agree.
But I also think that Hall's had his...
I mean, he's not the one to blame,
but I mean when
Todd McClellan goes to the
press and says what he said the other day
about you know having
it wasn't pride but he said
we need 10 guys in there
that actually have enough pride to carry
the rest of the guys and clearly they don't have that
very interesting
very interesting
here's a question from Chief
Keith
what are the chances the Leafs take a flyer
on Justin Schultz
Not good
Poor Justin Schultz
The thing I was reading the other day
Supposedly when the loophole trade happened
The Leafs made a hard
Hard push for Justin Schultz
Instead of Gardner
Dodge that bullet like
Neo
Holy smokes
I don't understand
What the benefit would be for the Leafs
He's not a good defenseman
But he's only like 22, right?
You got a better version.
Oilers fans, help me out, or anyone who knows both teams well enough.
Is Schultz just a younger, more expensive TJ Brennan?
Huh.
Kind of what it sounds like.
Schultz is 25.
I mean, you're starting to get into not young territory,
at least for a professional hockey player, you know what I mean?
And he should be better than he is.
he's got some offensive upside but he doesn't know what the hell to do in his own end
like i mean people keep saying why hasn't brendan been called up i mean i watched him
i mean granted it was one game but you see holy smokes he's got it like across the center ice
line holy smokes he's got it in his own end he was the least steady of the guys i watched
not saying he was terrible you know and and anyway i'm criticizing the ahl's leading score
But you know what I mean?
I don't understand what the benefit would be for the Leafs.
And it's not like the Oilers desperately need the Leafs to take them.
And it's not like the Leafs desperately need them.
They don't really need it.
They don't.
You're stock Edmonton, sorry.
And what's been interesting, too, is the development of Martin Marincin.
Who people keep criticizing.
But when you look at his stats, Steve, what did you say about Martin Marincin?
And you said it in the last episode.
He was from, I think his name is Matt Henderson, and I finally gave him credit on Twitter today
because he's the one who I saw tweet this.
He is the 2016 shutdown defenseman.
Cannot put up points, but he's a shot-suppressing machine.
So what does that mean?
Layman's term.
He's got good position numbers.
And granted, he'll have giveaways.
Every player does, though.
Some bad ones.
And every player does.
He's not going to put up a whole lot of points.
But if you need a guy, if you need a cheap option, he's not a great option.
But he is a cheap option, a young cheap option.
He can suppress shots.
He is to 2016 what Brian Marchment was to, like, 2001.
So he's a 5'6 guy?
Yes.
But can he play in the NHL?
Yes.
Can he play on a winning team in the NHL?
Potentially.
Okay.
Right?
Then that's fine.
That's all you need from Art Marincin because you got him for nothing.
Blackhawks, I mean, that's a guy, if I was a Blackhawks, I'd look into.
But he needs a new contract and yada, yada, yada.
And then you've got Stuart Percy,
who is another sort of player like that.
And the interesting thing that you said...
More offensive upside, for sure.
Sure, for sure.
But what you said at the Marlies game,
which I thought was interesting,
is you never hear Percy's name come up.
You don't notice him.
I've been watching him for over half a decade,
and he's lovely and boring.
I love how boring he is,
except on the power play when he's a quarterback.
you know he's
I like him
steady
nice and steady
so going into next year
as it stands
now this is impossible
to really predict
because Hunwick could go too
but you've got
Hunwick Riley
Winnick
you've got
no I'm talking defense here though
oh sorry
so you've got Hunwick Riley
you've got
Percy Gardner
yeah potentially
or
you put Percy with Riley
because Hunwick and Riley
you can look up the stats
have not done all that well together
no
but if you put
two possession guys
like Percy and Gardner together
That could be pretty lethal.
I don't know how good Percy's possession is.
I don't know what the AHL stats are.
Right.
Like, Dubas the other day told me in an interview that Hyman was one of the best, if not the best, possession guys on the Marlies.
There you go.
And I was like, what?
Okay.
Who knew?
And I assume he knows that.
I don't know why he would lie.
You know what I mean?
And then I asked Keefe, you know, ten minutes later, who wasn't even in the same room as Dubas, and he basically reiterated, yeah, we love Hyman.
We love Zach Hyman, so.
Yeah, sorry.
You were saying something, Adam.
You were saying Riley, Hunwick, Gardner, Percy, Marincin.
Marincin, Luz?
Harrington?
Oh, Corrado.
Corrado and Harrington.
Oh, Harrington.
And Harrington, who did play pretty well.
He was all right, and he was hurt almost the whole season.
So you've got Corrado.
You've got three bona fides right there, right?
You've got Corrado.
Corrado's possession is fantastic, by the way.
Yeah.
And he doesn't look out of place.
He looks great.
He looks really great with the Leafs.
You know how I know Corrado's numbers?
There is a new website out there.
Oh?
Manny Elk put it out there.
It's because War on Ice went kaput.
And that was kind of the advanced website out there.
Why did that happen?
I'm not sure.
And a lot of people loved War on Ice.
I found it hard to read sometimes, but I did love the site.
I found it really hard to use.
Corsica is the new site.
I think it's corsica.ca or corsica.com.
Manny Elk.
I think it is.
No, but Gus, who was on the podcast.
Katsaros.
Katsaros, yes.
Who obviously we follow.
I'm sorry, his last name just totally slipped my mind.
He was tweeting about that today.
Yeah, it's a good site.
It's a little, I found it a little easier to use.
I liked it.
But yeah, if you're interested in all that, Corsica, it's in the beginning stages.
How do you spell this?
Corsi?
C-A.
Corsi C-A.
Yeah.
C-O-R-S-I-C-A
Yeah, dots.
I think calm doesn't send a note.
Okay.
Just Google.
Okay.
Listen, when you get this far into the podcast,
you know what to expect.
Okay, so what I'm trying to get to here,
which I kind of want to sum up here, though,
is that you don't need a guy like,
you don't need a Justin Schultz kind of guy
because you kind of have better options, right?
the Leafs do have
better options
oh
it's Corsica dot hockey
cool
which I didn't know
was a thing
at all
and you get there
and it looks like a dial pad
and if you scroll over
each circle
it takes you to a different page
it's a cool site
would you guys like to hear
the comments after that question
were
as an Oilers fan
we'd pay you to have him
how many years
does Schultz have left?
he's an RFA after this season
Another comment was
Ironically I would much rather have Martin Marincin
Another comment was
Jake Gardner and Justin Schultz
On the same pairing
Would be like having two Eric Collisons
With a broken leg
With broken legs
No
That's a terrible comparison sir
Or madam
And final question
As displayed in Steve's recent LFR
For the Nashville game
How has Steve made it this far in life
Without knowing how to properly roll up a rim
I
Listen
I had to roll it up quickly
So I used my teeth
I know how to do it
I'm a grown ass man
Gwe
Leave me alone
That's it
That's right
G-A-P-S-H-E-R-O-Y
You don't roll up with your teeth or you do?
I rolled up with my teeth in the most recent video
Oh
So I could do it quickly
I usually do it with my fingers
Because that's how adults do it
And also, I like to think of the Tim's employees I'm going to be handing the cup to.
They don't want my...
How many gross things did they get?
I was just checking.
Sorry, I missed that.
I'm just checking to see if any other trades have broken.
Nothing's broken.
You know what?
A deal like Andrew Ladd's, I think, maybe sets up the trade deadline a little better.
Because the big fish is gone.
Now you can watch the school of little fish.
Steve, I think you also have to defend your stance on 2Ds and 1-4.
Oh, shut up.
Can Steve stop hating on 2D and 1-4?
No, I can't.
Let's not.
No, I keep claiming that's a stupid setup.
Let's go home.
But some of the best 3-on-3 teams in the league use it.
Shut up.
Okay, so we're going to go now before we get angry.
And we are going to go.
We will be back next week.
and we will have all the trade deadline stuff to talk about
and all the setup for the end of the season to talk about.
It's so nice.
It's so, so very nice that this is what we're heading into.
I'm so excited.
You know what else is nice?
Three forwards, no D.
