Panago Pizza presents S.C.P.
The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle and Adam Wilde.
Okay, so, blah, blah, blah, NHL playoffs, a couple game sevens, who cares?
You know what we need to talk about?
What?
We need to talk about the end, Steve.
The end of what, Adam?
An era, Steve.
An era!
You might say something has been terminated
Terminated
Forever gone
Gone
What's that?
That is Justin Bieber has decided he's no longer
Taking pictures with fans
He says if you happen to see me out somewhere
I'm not going to take a picture
I'm done I feel like a zoo animal
And I thought you guys should know that
It's the end of Justin Bieber's picture era
Era you know what
It's the end of the
Justin Bieber era
of people kind of liking him.
Yeah, well.
Remember when he shut up
for a while
and people didn't mind him?
And then he started getting
into fights at clubs again?
See, now I'm on his team.
I'm on his team on this one.
No, he pushed designer
at a club.
I watch WorldStarHipHop.
I know what he's up to.
I know what he's up to.
He can't do that.
I dare you, Biebs.
If you are considering
having children,
I suggest highly
that you read
the entire comment section
of Justin Bieber's
most recent post.
I mean, there's only 61,000 comments.
I would suggest reading the whole thing in its entirety,
and you will never have a child.
You will never give birth.
And by the way, are there that many parents out there
that are blissfully unaware of what their children are posting?
Oh, yeah.
I sent Steve and Jesse a link to an article
about a tweet that people got obsessed with
that was sent to Justin Bieber,
and I don't think you looked at it, Steve.
No.
But Jesse did.
And I can't repeat what this young girl said
Oh that's good
She was definitely a teenager
And it's so bad
That I would have a hard time even telling you
In person over beers
It's that bad
And you think you've heard it all
You have not heard it all until you've seen this tweet
Just google the tweet
It's there
And it is so bad
But parents have no idea
Follow your child on Twitter
It's not hard
Okay but how do I
How do I set it up
How do I
How long should my handle be
75
60
75 characters
What's a character
And make it about your car
Is that like a pixel
Make it about your car
Please make it about your car
Dads please
I drive a Dodge Trax
I drive
Yeah and then they set their thing to private
And you can't
You can't see what they're saying
So
Can we talk about the
The most recent UFC card
Most recent UFC card
Matthews V. Laine
Oh you
2016
Wow
Yeah
UFC 2016
Can I just
Can we just
Can we talk about that game
And I know there's a lot of
Playoff stuff to get to
But what you really want to hear about
Is Matthews versus Liney
And I know you do
And what I
What I don't understand
About all of this
Is okay
So here's
Here's what we knew going in
What do we know
We knew
Liney's a great hockey player
Hell yeah
Austin Matthews is a great hockey player
Hell yeah
So we watched the game
Finland wins 3-2
And at the end of it
What do we know
We know that
That Liney is better
on account of Finland won.
I believe that was the consensus.
And I don't understand how that's possible.
Even he said he played a terrible game
and people are either writing him off as he's terrible
or he is the guy that the Leafs need.
After all that, I tweeted,
after Canada's blowout win over Belarus,
you have to wonder if Conor McDavid is going to go first overall.
One has to ask the question.
Yeah, that's always it
You gotta ask the question
The question must be asked
It's so funny
People get really worked up about tournaments like this
Like, oh my god, did you see Patrick Laine's goal against Belarus?
And then the next day, I think
Did you see what Austin Matthews did against Belarus?
And then the day after
Did you see that Canada beat Belarus?
It's Belarus!
No offense to Belarus, but
name a player
on Belarus
the Belarusian one
exactly
no not
no
any of the
either of the Kostitsyns
that's the point
I think
they had a goalie
named Koval
who I remember
being like maybe
a backup
when I covered the KHL
boom
I know hockey
there you go
that's it
my point is this
okay
I think
here's the
I think we're getting a little—we're letting ourselves fall down the Line A v. Matthews thing a little too much.
I had a tweet, and this is not to attack this person personally at all.
I totally understand this.
But this is a prevailing argument that people are actually making.
It was tweeted at us, Steve, in the form of a question, but it still does not hold any—it's crazy.
People are actually suggesting that the Leafs would pick Line A because somehow they know that Stephen Stamkos is coming to Toronto.
So you're going to draft the pure goal scorer and sign the pure goal scorer.
And beyond that, you're going to make a draft choice based on a free agent that you have a 50-50 shot at best of getting.
Oh, at best.
At best.
Not even close.
Probably not even close.
I personally say 20.
20%
I think that's more than most
I would have given them that to get Babcock last year too
And they did it
I think we get way too worked up
You know what, it's tournaments
So we get really worked up
About the World Juniors
And when it comes to the draft
Well, the World Juniors
But also the World Hockey Championship
It doesn't often line up like this
It's not always
Actually what usually happens
Is some of the top
prospects like McDavid
are in a
deep playoff run
with their OHL, QMJHL,
WHL, whatever team. Maybe even
college team. No, no, because that
season's over. Anyway, junior hockey, right?
So he's not available. You can't
have a McEichel show
off. This year,
Auston Matthews' team is out.
Lyon A's,
all the finals are done. He won MVP,
did he not? I believe he did.
So we got the
Oh there you go
Right there
There's your first pick
There's your first pick
He's an MVP
Hey
And you know what
Hot damn
Seriously
Not easy
Hot damn
Way to go
Good for him
I read this thing
On Leafs Nation
Theleafsnation.com
About Matthew's numbers
Versus Lion-A's numbers
And they have this algorithm
That pro-rates it
Because the Swiss League
Is considered a better league
Than the Fin League
Than the Finnish League
Right
So if you take the numbers
And pro-rate it
Jesse I don't know
If you can look this up
I forget who wrote it.
But basically, Matthews has better numbers.
But forget all that.
These tournaments get people worked up.
You know who everyone got super worked up about at the World Juniors?
Jordan Eberle.
Well, Jordan Eberle, for sure.
And for good reason.
Yeah, and he's a great player.
He turned out to be a great player.
But this past year, Dmitry Timoshev.
Who the Leafs got in the fifth round last year?
Who the Leafs got in the fifth round, and I think is a steal.
And I think he's going to be a good prospect.
but can anyone tell me a damn thing about him since that tournament?
No, because you're not watching QMJHL games.
No, I think he's in the finals right now.
And by the way, I think he could have been knocked out first round.
He might not have even made the playoffs.
I don't know, because there's a lot of hockey to watch,
and QMJHL isn't at the top of my charts.
Yeah, exactly.
People get excited.
Yeah, and I get that there needs to be some sort of line written, right?
I get that there needs to be a narrative about this
that makes it somewhat exciting.
But this is a Toronto Maple Leafs team.
All you have to do is look at the roster.
Just look at the roster.
What are they missing?
Number one center.
A goalie.
And a goalie.
Number one center.
That's a lot of things.
A lot of things.
Everything.
But the first thing you want to get when you're missing everything
is a number one center.
Well, and a goalie.
Okay, after a goalie is a number one center
because there's no carry price in this draft, right?
And even if there was, I'd still be freaked out
because drafting a goalie in the top 10 is scary.
There might be, man.
There might be.
Yeah, and this is another thing.
People keep saying, you know,
the Leafs, they've got to address their goaltending issues.
They've got to draft a goalie this year.
You're not going to address a goalie through the draft.
Well, and let's pretend...
No, no, no, you can't.
Not this year.
Exactly.
Let's pretend you strike gold.
Like, odds are, if you get a great goalie in the draft,
a great, ahead-of-the-curve goalie,
optimistically they'll make the nhl regularly at 22 so you're looking four years down the road
so that's that's not your answer i'm gonna make a video about this so i don't want to blow
everything right now but basically the least goaltending situation is extremely exciting but
that's not what we're talking about we're talking about matthews versus linea what what i said a
few years ago i think it was 2013 there was a big argument there started to be a big debate
over Nathan McKinnon
going first overall
or Seth Jones
going first overall.
Who met in the Memorial Cup
final that year?
Nathan McKinnon's team
and Seth Jones.
Seth Jones went
third or fourth.
I think he went fourth.
And that's,
look,
I'm not knocking Seth Jones,
but my argument was,
I think he's terrible.
No, he's great.
He's actually really good.
My argument was
Nathan McKinnon
has been Nathan McKinnon
since he was 16.
Like,
and what I mean by that
is the hype.
Right.
Sidney Crosby
Has been Sidney Crosby
Right?
Not that there was any debate
Who was going first
Right
But he was Sidney Crosby
Since he was like 14
And we knew
We knew he was coming
We knew he was coming
This kid
This kid from Coal Harbor
We knew
I read about Connor McDavid
When he was like 15
Aaron Eckblad
I remember people saying
Aaron Eckblad's not gonna go first overall
Aaron Eckblad was
It's been Aaron Eckblad man
He's been Aaron Eckblad
So are you saying that
Austin Matthews
Been Austin Matthews?
He's been
Austin Matthews.
Austin Binthews.
No?
Not going to stick?
No, I don't think so.
I don't think that's going to stick.
Fair enough.
I love you, but I don't think it's going to stick.
You're right.
Fine.
Now, Lionel's going to be a great player.
Matthews is going to be a great player,
but we are going to hear about this forever.
Yeah, and again, this is going to be about
who's the better player out of this.
I've got to say, honestly, for the Leafs,
it doesn't matter.
It really doesn't matter.
Let's say Lionel turns out to...
For argument's sake,
Lainey turns out to be the Ovechkin
and the Leafs get the Crosby of this draft.
I'm not saying that Austin Matthews is Sidney Crosby,
but let's say...
What did you just say?
I'll take it.
We'll take it.
Let's say one is better than the other at one point
and one is better.
It goes back and forth.
Maybe Ovechkin's having a better few months now.
Crosby will have the next few months,
but it goes back and forth.
If that's the way it ends up,
which it looks like it may,
there's no guarantees on that either,
fine good good but the leafs need a number one center and even if you sign stephen stamp coast
how long will he be the leafs number one center or will he be a center right and and you put you
put stephen stamp coast even though he wants to play center you put him on the wing eventually
with austin matthews uh here's here's what i was talking about by the way i'm sorry i should look
up the author ryan hobart one of the newer writers at the leafs nation.com a little excerpt what i
want to display to you here is nhl equivalencies or nhle it's kind of a new stat that they developed
there of the nla which is the swiss league where matthews plays versus the liga which is the
finnish league that line played in using the data uh data from this post on hockey abstract and
obviously they link to it the nla has an 0.11 higher conversion factor meaning it's a league
where scoring historically equates to nhl production by 27.5 percent more than liga to put
this into actual numbers austin matthews 36 games played 46 points nhle 41.91 uh line a 46 games
played 33 points 17.06 nhle so go read it it'll it'll give you a a better idea just okay miss
Mr. Scientist?
Mr. Scientist.
But no, like, you know what I guess the equivalent would be
if you're just looking at line A's finish numbers
versus Matthew's Swiss League numbers
is if you took the QMJHL's top score
or the top scoring prospect in the QMJHL
and you just straight up said,
look at their points compared to the top score in the OHL.
No, you score more in the Q.
It's always been that way for as long as I've been watching it.
It's been that way for like at least two or three years.
Sorry, two or three years.
My goodness.
Like half a decade.
At least.
Maybe longer.
When I did Junior Hockey Magazine,
and I think it was the 08-09 season,
the top scorer in all of junior hockey
had over like 120 points
in a 68-game season.
Something goofy like that.
You had Mitch Barner numbers.
Even better.
Even better.
Yannick Riendo.
was he 20 he was that's why or well he was i don't know if he was 19 or 20 he was over
i think he signed a pro deal with boston i think he played in the e most of the time
you know what i mean you just score you score more in their league right right well i don't know i
look it's worth having a debate it's exciting it's fun being on this on this side of the debate
we're used to arguing over whether or not ian white should be the captain yeah you know like
Yeah, we should have been arguing about whether Ian White
was going to play three more seasons in the NHL.
Absolutely, but we didn't know that at the time.
We had no idea.
And look at us talking Stamkos.
Boy, did that chatter increase after Leafs got the first pick.
There's all kinds of stuff.
I have to say, too, Steve, you have come out and said
that you are not only not sure that the Leafs could get Stamkos,
that you're okay if they don't.
i'm okay if they don't just because i'm so gun shy about signing free agents and you hate him
personally i do you find him to be an objectionable character no powerade commercials you you you
think that you know he can take his his florida swimming pool and he can go drink it for all your
for all you care i once i once saw a puppy walk up to him and rub his leg like as if to suggest
hey buddy scratch my ear and you know what stamkos did what he turned the other way and pet a cat
i know what a jerk i bet the cat didn't even want to be pet no because it's a cat the cat ran the
other way because he knew wow no steven stamkos have met several times he's a lovely individual
look at his numbers look at you backpedaling look at you backpedaling dude dude 10 million dollars
okay it's so much money all right so here's and plus i don't think it makes sense for him
okay so you made the argument gonna be great next year they're not gonna be great two years from now
You made the argument, Steve, that on the last show, actually, you made the argument that Steve and Stamkos, as a leaf, you know, here are these young guys, they're coming up together, and all of a sudden you land the good ship Stamkos in the middle of it, and he becomes the captain immediately, and what has he done to, you know, he's not really a part of the group, so how does the group follow him?
I don't think you can just plunk a leader into the middle of a group.
Which is what they did with Dion, right?
Yeah, but the thing with Deion is he was their best player.
He entered the team as a star on a garbage team.
So here's what I'm going to say.
I've been wishy-washy on the subject, but now I think I have my answer.
Okay.
Not that it matters all that much.
Oh, it does.
I think that Stephen Stamkos will be a Toronto Maple Leaf next year.
Well, I'm like 50-50 on that.
I actually haven't.
I think that Stephen Stamkos needs to be a Toronto Maple Leaf next year.
And I'll tell you why.
Needs to be.
Tell you why.
Oh, no.
For Stephen Stamkos, for Stephen Stamkos, I think the benefits are obvious.
It's a huge hockey-ville.
There is a massive following here.
There are massive endorsement deals to be had.
You are talking about becoming one of the biggest celebrities in the game.
Not that he isn't already.
But this is the big league in terms of promotion around the game, right?
And nothing against Tampa.
They do a great job.
But Toronto's just bigger in terms of a hockey market.
He'd probably be a top five celebrity in the game.
Yeah, absolutely.
Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid.
And he'd be making more than all of them in the NHL.
Yeah, probably.
So you got that.
You got a lot of money.
You get to be at home.
You get to do the Toronto Maple Leaf thing, which you grew up wanting to do.
Beyond that, I think the Leafs really need Stephen Stamkos.
And it's not just for his goal scoring.
You know, he had something like 30 goals, 35 goals and 25 assists or something this year.
He was asleep.
Ridiculous.
And he wasn't playing much at the beginning of the season.
And there was fighting and he wasn't playing the set.
Yeah, switching positions a lot.
Unbelievable in a league where you can't even get a point a game anymore.
Okay, so there's that.
I think the Leafs need Stephen Stamkos to be there, to be potentially the captain,
because they need a guy who's going to set an example
as to how stars conduct themselves in the game.
Is there a star that you know or that you hear about
who works out harder than Stephen Stamkos?
No.
Let me play devil's advocate.
Please.
So you...
That is important.
That kind of work ethic is extremely important to the Leafs organization.
Babcock talks about that.
Babcock talks about it.
they signed Justin Johnson who is
kind of like a strength and conditioning
coach for the Marlies because he
hasn't played pretty much all season
but he has that weird contract where
guys who get called up to the Marlies and
promoted or whatever he gets a bonus for that
and he's a big cheerleader in there
and I see he's still at every he's at
all the practices and he's always working out
and stuff like that Rich Kloon
works out like an absolute madman
lifts weights
lifts weights like an Olympian
You know
He was showing
William Nylander
And a few other guys
Like MMA
And stuff like that
It's clear that
That sort of stuff
Is important
To the Leafs organization
But
What about stuff like
Liking the tweet
Remember that
When he caused
That whole kerfuffle
Okay
When he like
Now I'm just playing
Devil's advocate here
But that's a big headache
He caused a huge headache
For his teammates
Because now you gotta
Ask everybody about that
And he caused a huge headache
for his coach
who's got to get asked
about that
and Steve Eisenman
who had to come out
and say something
who was already
dealing with stuff
Steve Eisenman's
had a hard year
yeah it's been a rough year
for a GM of a team
who's in the final four
you know
and now he's got his
VP sounding off
Dave Andertuck talking
oh
yeah
it would be great
if everyone around
Steve Eisenman
acted more like
Steve Eisenman
just shut up
just shut up
just shut up
okay
but
this is what I'm saying
this is what I'm saying
Do the Leafs want that drama?
Right.
And again, people are like,
well, what would the Lightning do without Stamkos?
Well, they would get into the conference finals.
Apparently.
Well, because they've had a clear, easy path.
Right.
The battle-hardened Detroit Red Wings
and the New York Islanders who are loaded.
New York Islanders who are loaded with talent.
They didn't put it together this year,
but that's a scary team in the future.
I think their future's scary.
Okay.
Well, we actually have to talk about them a little bit later.
I think Stephen Stamkos
The Leafs need Stephen Stamkos
And I think he
He wants the Leafs
The Leafs need Stephen Stamkos
You need a guy
Who players will look up to
And respect
And not just on a personal level
Stephen Stamkos will walk onto that team
And at that point probably be the most talented player
On the team
I don't know if there's a probably about it
So you got a guy who
lives the game right, has the right attitude,
wants to be the leader,
wants to be the guy,
and then you get other guys who are 18, 19,
20 years old, who want
to be the guy eventually, but are not quite ready, and it's a lot
of pressure, and they maybe should just focus
on playing the game and let Steven
take all of that stuff. You know what I'm talking about?
And beyond that,
Steve, you've talked about the fact that he's got a
thirst to win, because he was robbed of a gold
medal in 2010, should have been on that team.
Robbed of a gold medal in 2014, because he should
have been on the team, but broke his leg.
and then robbed of the Stanley Cup last year.
Because the Blackhawks shouldn't have been there.
I don't know.
I was just trying to make up a reason.
No, the Blackhawks were just better.
I was just trying to make up a reason.
But there's a guy that wants to win,
so he's going to come to the team with a great work ethic.
He wants to lead.
He wants to be the guy.
He wants to be the hometown hero,
and he wants to win more than anybody probably in the NHL right now.
Now, Jesse, I want to ask you something.
No, what were you going to say?
I have a question.
Okay.
Okay?
Okay, if we don't get Stamkos, can we still make the playoffs in two years?
Yes.
Oh, yeah.
100%.
Got to figure out goaltending.
Do we need him?
Well, and this brings me to my question there, Jesse.
I'm kind of a gannet.
Adam's for it.
For it.
Are you for it or a gannet?
I'm a gannet.
Wow.
He's a gannet.
Because the franchise will move on if we don't get him.
Well, yeah, for sure.
And we don't need him now.
We're not winning next year.
But he's 25 years old.
By the time the Leafs are in, supposedly, if it all goes to plan,
and the Leafs are in winning zone in three years,
which is what they should be, starting to look like a scary team,
he'll be 28.
In five years, he'll be 30, at the peak of his career, guys.
So in three years, can we still be in winning zone without Stephen Stamkos?
Yes, but I don't think we'll be as far along.
I mean that honestly.
Yes, was the answer.
I think we can be.
We don't need him.
Because we can still win without committing $12 million to one dude.
Ten.
It'll be ten.
I think there are lots of ways you can build a winner.
And it's nothing against Stephen Stamkos.
It's nothing against his resume, his acumen.
You hate him personally.
It's cool.
Absolutely.
One time, he was cordial to me.
Wow.
And I was like, what, do you think you're better than me?
He's probably faking it.
That's what I thought.
So I was like, yeah.
I saw his hair, and it was beautiful, and I'm like, what, do you think you're better than me?
Well, his hair, when it was long, was maybe not beautiful.
That's like, Steve's flow was not great.
It was not a flattering haircut.
How dare the both of you, actually?
That was not a flattering haircut.
How actually dare the both of you?
Listen, I understand needing to grow your hair, and I did it too, but no.
Both of you, incorrect.
He's going to do what he needs to do.
All right, now I want Stephen Stamkos.
There you go.
No, okay.
All right.
What I was going to argue is there are lots of ways to build a winning team.
And I think one of the riskier ways, and therefore one of the ways I would like to avoid the most,
is through unrestricted free agency.
Unrestricted free agency.
James Reimer, by the way, is probably the best unrestricted free agent goalie available this summer.
Yep.
Someone is going to give him an amount of money they might regret.
And I love James Reimer because he's the number one guy available.
Dude, Kyle Ocpozo.
We're going to get to that.
Yes, but yes.
He's already not going to be an Islander because he's an unrestricted free agent.
He wants $7 million.
He might get it.
He probably will get it.
He's an unrestricted free agent.
It's crazy these days.
You have to draft.
I don't care if you're a cap team or a budget team.
The prices are nuts.
They're nuts.
I don't know, man.
$10 million for anybody in this league.
Anybody.
Save CrossFit.
New question before we go to break.
Jesse, you have something to say quickly?
No, go ahead.
New question.
On the room, I want to hear everybody's answer.
July 1st comes.
Leafs give
Stephen Stamkos
X amount of years
X amount of dollars
Let's say
Seven
Yeah
Argument's sake
It's a seven year
Seventy million
Which is what they're predicting
Which I think is
That makes sense
I think that's value
Optimistic
Optimistic for sure
For seven years
Seventy million
No movement clause
Yes
Which means you can't
Leave him unprotected
In the expansion draft
Next year
So we got that
What
How will you feel
At that moment
I was kind of just thinking about that.
I think I'll be happy.
Because then I'll have Stephen Stamkos.
Because you still have Stephen freaking Stamkos, right?
You ever buy something that's definitely, definitely too expensive
and you shouldn't have bought it?
But then you have it.
And then you're like, ah, look at this.
I've had buyer's remorse, but then eventually it wears off.
It does wear off, because then you're like, ah, I have this thing.
And maybe a few months later you're like, ah, I shouldn't have done that.
But I still love it.
Then they'll have that toy.
They'll have their fun little toy.
Now, dude, he better score in his first freaking game, though.
Well.
He better score in his first freaking game
because he's going to have such a hard time.
The days turn into weeks, turn into months with this team, man.
Right.
You start a little slow, that's the way you're going to be.
Forget for the season, for your tenure as a Leaf.
Jesse, how will you be?
I'm going to be happy because I'm going to know
that he won't sign that contract and he's going to go somewhere
and get $11 million.
No, no, but can you play the hypothetical game, please?
No, he's going to go somewhere and get more.
He's going to go somewhere and get more.
No, okay.
The true could happen.
I think Jesse's probably right.
Where?
Who else has the money?
Who has the type of capital?
Exactly.
Everyone keeps saying, oh, I think he's going to sign.
Okay, do you think he's going to sign with Tampa?
No, I don't think he's going to sign with Tampa.
Do you think he's going to sign with the Leafs?
No, everyone thinks he's going to sign with the Leafs.
He's not going to sign with the Leafs.
All right, where?
Where's he going to go?
No one.
and any team
I'm not ripping on you
but like no one
I saw people making
the Islanders
oh don't think so
playing in New York
and what would I pay them
with banana bread
they have the cat room
hallelujah
our problems are solved
we have a banana bread
do you want to go to the
arena where only 75%
of the fans
can actually see you
like
I don't think so
I mean the rest of them
will be watching
on the phone
oh shout out to
whoever sent us
the crying Jordan
of Barclays
that you can't even see
the whole face
because it's obstructed.
Oh,
is that funny?
I just,
and I'm going to say
I will be ecstatic too.
Here's why.
I've heard,
remember,
remember that great players,
great players as prospects,
not every great prospect
turns into a great player.
Not every prospect
turns into the player
that you're hoping.
So let's,
for argument's sake,
and I don't want to put
this evil on him,
but we're putting a lot
on young William Nylander.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, Mitch Marner.
Mitch Marner.
Mitch Marner.
Austin Matthews.
With Austin Matthews hasn't even been drafted yet.
He might not even be their guy.
Stephen Stamkos already is.
Already is.
I'm just saying.
When we see the Tampa Stamkos, which is not currently and hasn't been for a few months,
do you think we're seeing the best?
No.
I think you put him with JVR and you put whoever else on there.
I'd love to see him play with James Van Riemsdyk and Leo Komarov.
I'm not even saying that.
And Leo Komarov.
I would love to see
Or
Or
Nylander
Or Matthews
Or whoever
But I want to see Komarov
I like Komarov
Because he takes the attention
Away from the star
Who was on the ice
Okay there was an argument
To be made
That he shoots it
Or JVR shoots it
And Komarov bangs it in
But I would like to see
Someone with a little more pep
A little more pep
Who can feed
Stamkos the buck
He shoots it
And then JVR bangs it in
Okay
Fair
A better player
I mean a better player
A better player
Leo Komarov
Fantastic
shouldn't be a first line player
on a good team.
That's interesting.
What?
Does Kadri become a winger
if we get Matthews and Stamkos?
What everyone keeps telling me
is Nylander.
Because apparently
that's where Babcock
wants to see him.
Honestly, I don't care.
Like, I just...
I want to see a sick team.
I want to see a...
You know what?
I don't care.
I want to see some sick dangs, brah.
I want to see a sick team.
Some sellies, brah.
Dude, I don't care
if they switch to defense.
I don't care.
Just be good.
Just play.
Brah.
Just, bruh, just win some cups, bruh.
Just drop that.
Bruh.
Bruh, these cups are taste.
It's like arms, bruh.
Someone sauces you an apple, it's like you make it into a Geno, and it's like, you know?
No, if someone sauces you an apple, it's applesauce.
Do we ever get a break?
Oh yeah, we gotta do that.
Hey, it's Posted at 590 The Pen, Steve Dangle Podcast.
When we come back, we do need to talk about the Islanders.
We're also going to grab some, we're going to talk a little bit about the Ottawa Senators
and Guy Boucher and Boudreau and that whole situation.
Oh, my goodness.
Also, the NHL's low-key coaching situation
that nobody's really talking about that is about to blow up.
Babcock's getting fired.
No, but it's on the West Coast, so no one cares.
Oh, good.
It's a team that's already out.
We'll talk about that next on the Steve Dangle Podcast.
Kyle Akpoza.
Is a leaf, and he's going to play on a line with Stephen Stamkos for $7 million.
Is Kyle Akpoza this year's Matt Boleski?
making him this year's David Clarkson.
See, no, he would have to be this year's David Clarkson
because to Matt Boleski's credit,
even Matt Boleski wasn't his year's Matt Boleski.
We all thought he was going to get five plus million
and he signed for under four, actually.
You know, a decent contract with Boston.
I wouldn't say that was totally outrageous.
But Ocpozo's going to get paid.
I haven't heard the seven million stuff that you guys keep throwing out.
Sportsnet.ca says 7 million
No I didn't
No but then you were like
It's on tape
Oh no I said he might get it
Play the game tape
Sportsnet.ca one of the articles up there
I don't remember which one specifically
Has it quoted
They're saying about 7 million
UFA
UFA my friend
So he's out in
The Islander land
By the way
Kyle Lamposo, God bless him, not worth it for that kind of money.
Is he a 50-point guy?
I don't know.
This is what I was saying about Stamkos.
How many players in the league would you right now give $10 million to?
Steven Stamkos would be one of them.
Really?
Yep.
I got Crosby.
I got Ovechkin.
I got McDavid.
You got Patrick Kane.
Nope.
Eric Carlson?
He can't play for my team.
Maybe Eric Carlson.
Drew Dowdy?
Brett Burns
Maybe Drew Doughty
Probably not Brent Burns
Best
He's probably the best
Defenseman in the NHL this year
Why wouldn't you give him
10 million
What's his age
Dude 10 million dollars
I know it's a lot
It's 10 million dollars
When my
When the cap is
What just over 70
I know
You're one seventh
When I gotta
Have a 20 man roster
No
No
No
Opozo scored
64 points this year
Okay
79 games
That's pretty good
That's really
That's amazing
that's amazing
and in the NHL
of five years ago
that would have been
a point a game
you know like
when guys were still
scoring 110
120 points
what happened
yeah really
what happened
like
that's a good question
when Joe Thornton
won the Art Ross
with like 120 points
in 05-06
like people keep
talking about
the goalie equipment
it hasn't gotten
bigger since 2006
sure
no
has it
no
have goalies gotten bigger
what the hell happened
no I think they got better
and the equipment's
Cotland Lighter and all that stuff they talk about.
Anyway, Kyle Ocposo, sorry.
Kyle Ocposo.
Going to make a lot of money.
So there's that, and then there's Travis Hamanick,
who has now rescinded his trade request.
No trade clause.
Have you ever heard of that?
Never.
Never.
I mean, I'm sure it happens.
I'm sure it happens.
Oh, totally.
I mean, Jonathan Drouin, he didn't really take it back.
He was just kind of like, yeah, I lost.
Yeah, I lost.
Put me in the lineup.
And to his credit, he's been great.
I mean he's been a big reason
why Tampa
you know
hasn't really missed
Stamkos all that much
he's a big reason
why they're in the final four
I keep emphasizing that
because they have a
one in four shot
at the Stanley Cup
that's nuts
without their superstar
and then Stamkos
comes back
and scores 20 points
in the final
and wins the conspire
New York
the New York Islanders
future then too
also we've got
John Tavares
who's up after next year
so
is he coming home as well
well no
I don't think so
I don't think so
If we don't land Stamkos, do we land Taveras?
Yes.
Yes, I will say that.
That's what I think is going to happen.
If Taveras goes to free agency next year and we don't have Stamkos, Taveras is a leaf.
Do we just have one of these every year?
Is that just how this works?
Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.
And I enjoy it.
I enjoy it.
I straight up enjoy it.
You know why?
Because it's the one thing that Toronto has right now that we can be superior on.
Because we have nothing else.
See, I think there's a weird inferiority here.
Really?
And I think it's the reason why I'm skittish on Stamkos.
Things have been going well, and we're just not used to that.
We're used to, for the last, what, year?
About a calendar year.
Everything has gone the way I wanted it to, basically.
Almost every move.
I would say 90% of the Leafs' decisions I've agreed with and I've been totally happy with.
And I'm just, I don't think I can handle the heartbreak of Stamkos not working out in Toronto.
I don't think I can handle the heartbreak
Of Daveris not working out in Toronto
I am
Why won't I let myself be happy
I'm too
I'm worried
I'm worried to let myself be happy
And that's why you don't want
That goes back to the Stamkos argument
That's what I'm saying
The only reason
And I bet Jesse you feel the same way
Uh nope
No you don't
It's not that you're
It's an awful deal
You shouldn't do it
We don't need him
To be a successful team
So why would we sign him
Penguins don't need Crosby to be...
Yes, they do.
Why?
He is their franchise.
I don't need a Ferrari to have a good time,
but it would be cool to have one.
They drafted Sidney Crosby.
Maybe if we drafted him like Austin Matthews
and made him the face of our franchise,
like we will make Austin Matthews, we'll be fine.
I think, you know what, Jesse?
I like that.
I like drafting your core and maybe signing...
Think of how many different guys you could get
for the amount of money you would give Stamkos.
yeah you'd get
three Leo Komrofs
no
maybe
well
I mean
but that's the thing guys
is that
you have to have
top line talent to win
are we agreed on that
we can grow that
agreed
you can grow that
fair
fair
but it is going to be a while
and those guys
are going to need
some tutelage
we've seen what happened
with Kadri
Kadri's 24
25 years old
and he just now
got his
stuff straight
if it was a podcast
I would have said
a different word there
his business
together
yes
and you got to expect
that young guys
we were all
young and in our 20s once
Jesse still is
God bless him
what are you talking about
you guys
young in our 20s
though
in your early 20s
you make stupid decisions
you need people
around you
I'm 28
and I can assure you
I make no stupid decisions
anymore
I'm just saying
dumber
in the early 20s
than your later 20s
like okay
here's what I'm looking at
alright
here are the leading scores
from this past season
Patrick Kane
with the team who drafted him
Jamie Benn
with the team who drafted him
Sidney Crosby
with the team who drafted him
Joe Thornton
with the team who ripped him off
from the Bruins
that was hilarious
Eric Carlson
with the team who drafted him
Johnny Gaudreau
with the team who drafted him
Blake Wheeler
nope
Joe Pavelski
with the team who drafted him
in the 7th round I believe
Evgeny Kuznetsov
with the team who drafted him
Artemi Panarin
that's a little different
How far down the list are you?
Ten names.
And there were two.
Yeah.
Eight out of ten.
And then you get into Brent Burns, who's not with the team who drafted him.
Tarasenko, who is.
Kopitar, who is.
Sagan, who isn't.
Ovechkin, who is.
Nicholas Backstrom, who is.
Tavares, who is.
Bergeron, who is.
Chris Letang, who is.
Claude Giroux, who is.
Jager definitely doesn't count.
Kucherov, who is.
Hall, who is.
Forsberg, who also doesn't count, but he made his NHL debut with them.
But the point is, guys.
That doesn't make it not a valid thing
That he would come to the Leafs and do a good job
No, but
And the Leafs have a good young core
Arguably
Or have the makings of one
By the way, that was the top 30
How many guys did I miss by?
That doesn't change the argument
Which is Stephen Stamkos is a top line player
Who's going to be an unrestricted free agent
Stephen Stamkos is
exactly the kind of player you need
if you're three or four
years further along in your development
than the Leafs are. I think
if the Leafs are a cup contender, or
let's say the Leafs made the playoffs this year
and they're looking
good, but they got pushed around a little bit and
they just lacked a little bit of scoring touch in
whoever they played in the first or second round,
I'm going, hells yeah
Stephen Stamkos, hells yeah.
But they're in a, they're a little
I guess the word I would use
is they're a little more delicate.
And who in that position,
who in that first round position
would have the cap space
to bring a guy like that in?
I don't know.
Nobody.
The answer is nobody.
I don't think that's true.
Maybe someone makes it.
Okay, on an off year.
The draft is going to be a blast.
Oh, by the way,
I found out a couple things.
Found out a couple things
about the draft.
What's up?
So, I thought
the big day, round one,
I thought that was June 25th.
Mistaken.
It's June 24th.
Round two through seven is on the 25th, which is my friend's wedding day, and I'm a groomsman
in that wedding.
So I haven't spoken to everyone who I need to speak to yet, but I'm thinking, go to round
one, watch all the Matthews goodness, drive home that night from Buffalo.
Where is it again?
It's in Buffalo.
Buffalo.
Yeah, you should.
Drive home that night, and then I'll be back in time for the wedding.
I'm leaving for England that day.
What is the matter with you?
I know.
I know.
I have that day off, too, but I have to go to England.
So, yeah, I'm never booking a vacation over that two-week block again.
This is just a big mistake.
But I'll still be in England, so it's no big deal.
But what we wanted to get to, what I wanted to get to there is how much soul-searching
and how much tinkering are the Islanders going to have to do this offseason?
I know we kind of got off track there.
We got Hamannik who's going to stay, Akpozo who's going to leave, Tavares who's up in a year.
What do the Islanders do?
They draft
Oh wait
They have two picks
In the first five rounds
They're in Minnesota
Where did their trades go?
Minnesota
Who did they get?
They got Shane Prince
From Ottawa
For a third
Which was
That's a great trade
That's a good trade
I don't know
Where their second
Or
Fifth
Went
I think they got a sixth
And a couple sevenths
Their second went to Boston
For Johnny Boychuk
Oh
Oh that'll do
That'll do
their third
Shane Prince
like you said
their fifth
went to Florida
for Montreal's
fifth
and none of that
had to do with
Thomas Vanik
I thought
I would have thought
one of those at least
you know what
you can't even hate
on the Islanders
for that
no
that's okay
Boychuck's an investment
Prince is an investment
if you keep them
yeah that's fine
and they did make
the second round
so they're still doing well
I'm just saying
things are looking
a little scary
so
Bruce Boudreau
was the Ottawa
Ottawa Senators
first pick
to be their coach
But because it's Ottawa, they got Guy Boucher and Mark Crawford and nothing against Guy Boucher.
I think it's so funny that people are talking about Guy Boucher as though he's some runner-up prize.
This is a great coach and was a day away from being the Leafs head coach last year.
So this is interesting.
Bruce Boudreau, his daughter lives in Ottawa and she apparently hasn't spoken to him since he chose to go to Minnesota.
She's mad.
She's really mad at him.
He was kind of joking about it.
He's like, she hasn't spoken to me.
Because she knew he was up for it.
But he took more money.
I guess he's making $2.67 million as a coach in Minnesota,
which I think he deserves, given his record.
Oh, absolutely.
I think it's hilarious how fast he got scooped up.
What was he unemployed for?
Less than a week?
Four days, I think?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And he says this is his last.
He says he's done after this.
Fun fact about Bruce Boudreaux, too.
He was a top 10 pick going into the 1974 draft.
And he fell to, I believe, 40th.
Do you guys know why?
No.
Oh, why?
He was arrested in a bar a week before the draft.
Oh, no.
For?
Streaking.
Oh, come on.
That doesn't even count.
Come on.
How did they not draft him first overall after finding that out, right?
Teams back then, man.
Teams.
Anyway, funny.
Funny story.
I thought you were going to start talking about a McDonald's.
No.
No.
No.
That was a different restaurant.
you're referring to
I know you're
yeah
anyway
anyway
if you are
if you are
Guy Boucher
going into this year
you gotta
yeah
sorry I had to get
into character there
opened my eyes really wide
seriously he has the
David Clarkson eyes
for sure
um
are you not going in
with a bit of a chip
on your shoulder
and a look like that
on your face Steve
which people will only
see on the YouTube video
yes hello
hello hi
uh
oh
you know
he might have a bit
of a chip on his shoulder
he might want to
prove something
to
certainly the people
of Ottawa
certainly to the
Toronto Maple Leafs
who I guess
spurned him
for Mike Babcock
I don't even think
Guy Boucher could blame
them for that
come on
well
I think he
also might want to
point and do a little
laughing at the
Montreal Canadiens
who at one point
were grooming him
in the American
Hockey League
before he went to Tampa.
Because, I mean, they've got to get a French-Canadian coach.
They've handcuffed themselves to that.
They tried to get a guy who only speaks English once,
and everyone rioted.
Randy Cunningworth.
Yet, when they did have guys who only spoke English in the 50s,
they won a bunch of cups then.
I don't know what's changed, but anyway.
What's changed is you can't.
Two minutes for you can't do that, Adam.
And it seemed like he was the guy
And no, no, we like the guy we got
He does not lack respect
But the reason I bring that up
Is because the best part
Of the Guy Boucher signing
Is how upset
Montreal Canadiens fans are
Oh yeah
It's a story that involves the Minnesota Wild
And the Ottawa Senators full stop
That's the end of it
Those two teams
And the angriest team involved, Montreal
Montreal
They could have had him
They could have
And would have had him
Had they
Had they not doubled down
On Michel Therrien
Like
And
I saw Andrew Berkshire tweet
He goes
And now I am positive
They are firing Therrien
Mid-season
And when they do
Who's gonna replace him
Claude Julien
Oh no
He's still working
I mean like
I don't know what they do
I don't know what they do
It's
Oh man
It's all great
It's all happening.
Now, they are going to ride that Babcock versus Boucher storyline pretty hard.
Yeah, get ready for that.
Get ready for it.
I mean, hey, if they're going to be good, you're going to get stories like that.
You're going to get Laine versus Matthews.
You're going to get all that.
You're going to get Stamkos versus whoever else you could assign.
I like Boucher versus Babcock because it's Leafs versus Sens again.
And that was fun when that happened.
Hells yeah.
I like some rivalry.
That's good.
That's good because both teams have been just,
or the Leafs have been so bad that there's no rivalry to be had.
You have to be a good team for there to be a rivalry.
Or you both have to be so equally bad that it's still entertaining.
Like the Oilers and the Flames.
Let's not talk about the Oilers and Flames here, Adam.
That's how as bad all of Alberta was in terms of hockey this year.
Anyway, you know, on that note, I think it's a good time to bring up,
Before we wrap it up, obviously we've all seen what happened in Fort McMurray.
We all have friends and relatives and friends of friends,
and however you're connected to this.
A dear friend of the show, Andrew Berkshire, is from Fort McMurray
and still has family there.
So we want to let you know that there is a Red Cross number that you can text.
It's FIRES, F-I-R-E-S, to 45678.
You do that text, it's a $10 donation.
And it'll come back, and it'll confirm, and it'll say, you know, do you want to do this donation?
And you just say yes, and it'll even give you a link to a receipt.
It's super easy.
I've got to try that again, because I did that, and it didn't give me the text back.
Try all caps.
Yeah.
Maybe that was it.
Okay.
Yeah, and it'll show up on your cell phone bill super, super easy.
So we just want to make sure that, you know, Canadians so far apparently have raised about $60 million, which is incredible.
It's about $2 a person for the country, which is awesome.
And the Canadian government is matching it?
Yes.
And then, of course, there's the Canadian Disaster Relief Fund, which will kick in as well.
And they're saying to clean all this up, it's going to be about $8 billion.
Wow.
For people who are kind of unfamiliar with the situation, a Canadian city essentially burned down.
Yeah.
Like the whole thing.
The whole thing.
And the fires are going to last another couple of months.
Yeah.
They said it's too big to put out without rain.
So the government will take care of about 90% of the $8 billion bill.
That's what they're estimating it at.
It could get higher.
It could get lower.
I don't know for sure.
But then there's the rest of it, right?
Then there's the other 10% that we got to somehow figure out, the insurance companies and Good Samaritans.
So if you can help, it's Fires to 45678.
With that, on the Steve Dangle Podcast, we're going to wrap it up.
In the download section of this show, we have the most low-key coaching bad situation going on.
Yeah, it's low-key.
No one's talking about it, but it's sort of a big deal involving a very big team.
And it's going to erupt into a controversy if it hasn't already by the time you're listening to this.
Real quick before we go, I just did it again.
Fires, all caps.
It worked, and then it sends you a message.
Then you reply, yes, all caps.
And in the show description, we're going to include a link because we have a lot of international listeners.
If you're American or European or whatever and you want to donate, you just go there.
Amazing.
This podcast is brought to you by Panago Pizza.
It's what's on the inside that counts.
So the situation that nobody is talking about in the NHL that I think is fascinating is the coaching situation in Los Angeles.
Mr. Sutter
Daryl
has been given a contract extension
offer that
Dean Lombardi
who by the way is extraordinarily candid
by NHL general manager standards
he says a lot of stuff
maybe to a fault at times
I don't think Dean Lombardi would do well in Toronto
I don't think he'd handle the media well here
because you get Dave Feschuk or Steve Simmons
on one of his quotes
we have Brian Burke
yeah Dean Lombardi is a little bit more
No, boy, this city aided him.
It aided him.
And you know what?
Once things went south, look, they had all this ammunition.
Pittsburgh modeled my ass.
Right?
Well, and so D. Lombardi said, we offered him something fair.
The article I read, which was by Damien Cox, did say somewhere probably in the neighborhood of $5 million, but that was an estimate.
Whoa!
That's a lot of dough.
And Mr. Sutter apparently told Elliot Friedman
Over text message
That he was considering things
Dean Lombardi said this though and I thought this was really interesting
I'm considering things
Yeah that's all
Apparently that you know what it's better to
Communicate with Mr. Sutter
And I call him Mr. Sutter because I'm scared of him
Better to communicate with him over text message
Than it is in person because you got a sentence out of him
At least on text message right
Which Elliot Friedman did get
Alright guys we're going to go out there and we're going to show a lot of passion
Dean Lombardi said
I want him
We want him back
But we don't want anybody
We want you back
Is what he said to
The coach and players
But really the coach
But we don't want the same stuff
Just because it worked in the past
Doesn't mean it's going to work in the future
We need to move the team ahead
So basically you're saying to the head coach
I want you
But I want you to change
And I don't know
Daryl Sutter doesn't strike me as the change type
does does he did am i wrong uh i mean okay he coached the what was it
the 2004 flames yes to the stanley cup all the
way to the seventh game all the way to the seventh game
became gm too yeah and that didn't go so good
he's a great coach it was a pretty bad gm but he's a great coach
um i gotta think that his style from 2004
to now and he was also a coach in the 90s has changed quite a bit
So I got to think this guy can adapt.
And he's the coach of the Corsi God Kings who ran into the Sharks.
A team that's also not so bad at that whole possession thing.
But if I'm a coach that can demand five million bucks and it's a bit of a coach's market, I could go back to Calgary if I wanted.
Right.
Who are you to tell?
Sorry, you're telling me what?
You're telling me what?
I would rather go back to Alberta
where I'm from anyway
probably make that money there
and how about you kiss my ass?
How about that?
You ever thought about that?
Want me to change?
How about you change where your lips are
and place them on my ass?
You offered me five million bucks.
How about you kiss my ass?
How about that?
That's the thing
because here's the thing.
You're right.
It's a coach's market right now.
Coach's market.
Yeah.
and even if
even if he doesn't
sign in Calgary
you know that job
in Montreal
is going to be open
and you know
that Daryl Sutter
that Daryl Sutter
would not be accepted
by French Canadian fans
I don't think it matters
I think he's got
a Stanley Cup recently
and I think
Montreal Canadiens fans
would be fine with it
I'm sure they'd be fine
with it
they would have been
fine with Babcock
they would have
I've heard that from Andrew
Andrew Berkshire
has told me that
he said
they would have been
fine with Babcock. Yeah, but he's a dirty Anglophone.
Yeah, whatever. Or is it French?
And you know what? Even if they weren't
fine with it, Montreal would still be a way
better team. So eventually, they'd be fine
with it.
Okay? I'm just saying,
LA, watch yourself.
Because who else is
available? Boudreau, Boucher,
Crawford, gone.
In 24 hours.
You want me to change? How about you hire Randy Carlisle
and kiss my ass?
Who's out there? If Dean Lombardi
loses Daryl Sutter, does Dean Lombardi
lose his job?
No. Because nothing's ever that
immediate.
We talk about it on the show. It doesn't matter
that the writing's on the wall. There's something
like a six-month rule.
It's like relationships. You know the relationship's
over. Or at least, Steve, you've never gone through
this because you dated
two people.
But in my world,
relationships often
end several months before they end.
And sometimes your friends
Kind of go
Hey man
And then
That too
And sometimes your friends
Go hey man
So how's that going
You enjoying that
You having fun tonight
And you go
Yeah
You know you say it
With such love
Yeah
Yeah
We are in love
Fuck you
Said Alan
It's like baseball
Well I don't think
Any of my exes
Of course I'm fucking nappy
But yeah I mean
that's that's that's the way it goes so i don't know i if i'm dean lombardi don't i look happy
make the change make the change now if you want daryl sutter to change daryl sutter's not changing
so make the change he could i mean it depends what the change is right depends what the change
is but like there are i think sometimes you say things when there are bigger fish to fry
like for example you're paying almost six million dollars to dustin brown who does not look like
Dustin Brown anymore?
But he's your captain.
But he's your captain.
I thought Anze Kopitar
was the captain.
Nope.
Fourth line,
Dustin Brown is their captain.
I think Anze Kopitar
will be their captain
pretty soon.
I agree.
One has a C on their jersey.
You're right.
I agree.
Things have to change.
You have to find a way
to revive this guy
as an NHL player.
They should find a way
to keep him.
They should definitely
find a way to keep him.
That is also a team, though.
They're just kind of cap-strapped, and they're spending a lot of money already.
And then they're going to spend $5 million on a coach?
And potentially try to sign Lucic, too, because the furthest along that they are with any of their free agents,
restricted or unrestricted, is with Lucic.
I love that they just operate under their own cap.
I don't know how they're going to do it.
The Kings, Blackhawks, and Penguins are all just like, ah, yeah, sure.
What's the cap? Yeah, we'll see about that.
Oh, yeah, just kind of take it or leave it.
By the way, as we are recording this,
the Marlies tie their series with the Albany Devils.
They win 5-1.
And you've been following this series.
Why?
They had a bad first game.
They won the second game.
In the third game, you said they should have won,
but they didn't win.
What happened?
Well, they were winning with like 20 seconds left,
something like that.
They allowed the tying goal.
It goes overtime.
And you know what?
There was a dirty hit from behind in overtime.
Stuart Percy, who didn't play in game four here
because he was hit from behind by Joseph Blandese.
Uh, no, no call, no suspension.
And then the Marlies eventually lose on the PK.
And I was going to get all huffy about that.
And I waited a long time to make my MFR video, my MFR.
Um, which is what you are.
Many people have called you an MFR.
How dare you?
How dare you, sir?
Um, uh, they were 0 for 8 on the power play.
That's why they lost.
If you're the Marlies, you can't be that.
You can't look at the best.
You gotta be.
Yeah, you can't look at this cheap thing, or this cheap thing, or this cheap thing.
It's the playoffs.
Stuff gets missed.
Sometimes it's in your favor.
I mean, they gave you eight power plays.
How much stuff was missed?
But Albany, I was saying to Jesse, I was ranting before you got here,
they suck the life force out of you.
And if they get an early lead, which they did in this one,
I'm surprised the Marlies won, they just sit back.
They New Jersey Devil it.
Absolutely.
And they are the Devils fan team.
Yep.
They clog up the middle of the ice.
They get in front of the goalie, who is Scott Wedgwood, who's pretty good.
There's a skate in the way.
There's a stick in the way.
There's everything in the way.
Where's Scott Wedgwood?
Scott Wedgwood.
I remember him.
From the World Juniors.
Yes.
Of World Junior fame.
The Devils got the lead two minutes into this game.
And I was just like, oh, we're in for a long night.
I was listening on the radio, very upset and not excited to do this podcast.
But
Marley's triumph
They win 5-1
But they lost Andreas Johnson
In the process
The footage is not up
At the time we're recording this
So I hope it gets up
The player who hit him
I didn't see
He's an assistant captain
Has a beard
That's all we know so far
He's getting suspended
Yeah
He's getting suspended
He will not play next game
Hopefully for the rest of the series
Because Johnson was out
Cold
On his back
Arms at his side
Cold
In his second
North American game
Unreal
Nice
Nice
Zach Hyman beat the
piss out of the guy
who did it oh good
so good well I was
hoping it'd be Rich
Clune although Rich
Clune has been known
to fight the wrong
guy yes where he
filled in the wrong
guy's face just because
he had that jersey on
so that's hilarious
and by the way
another reason why
this is important it
guarantees the Marlies
will return to Toronto
because game five is
also in Albany so
one team will show
up for game six in
Toronto up three two
who's it going to be
and that video is up
on sportsnet.ca of
Johnson getting cold cocked, eh?
Gotta see it. Who did it?
I can't tell you that right now. Okay, cool.
Let's move on. SkateToGreat.org.
We just want to say, if you got any money
left over, and we know you've probably already donated to
Alberta, remember that there's
equipment that kids need for
next season. So if your kid is outgrowing
theirs, or you've got a cousin, or
whomever, that doesn't need
equipment anymore, SkateToGreat.org is a great place
to go and drop equipment off.
And then it gets it out of your house and off your hands, right?
You need something off your list you don't have to worry about.
Also, the CWHL Pave the Way game is this weekend, gentlemen.
The Clarkson Cupcakes, led by one and only Sasky Stewart.
It also includes Steve, myself, Jesse, and Jeffler.
And donate to me.
No, actually, donate to me.
Donate to me.
Jesse's already reached his goal.
I'm good.
I reached my goal, but then I raised my goal, and now I can't reach my goal.
So, if you could help me, I will tweet out my donation.
Learn his lesson while you give me money.
Yes, and because our team has done so well,
thank you to your donations,
because our team has done so well,
we get first overall pick of the actual CWHL All-Stars.
Daryl Strawberry.
So I'm thinking we got Daryl Strawberry.
So we're going to have a great player on our team,
and if you want to come out,
we'll tweet out all the details,
and you'll be able to find that out.
It was the dirty defenseman, Dan Kelly.
Dan Kelly.
Dan Kelly.
Yes.
Well, see you next year, Dan.
You're not playing for the rest of the series.
It's that bad, eh?
He got a match penalty on the play.
Yeah, he deserved it.
Zach Hyman got the instigator.
Wow.
Most worthwhile two minutes of his life.
Now, we got a couple things here.
First off, we got to talk about,
and we had this tweeted at us a million times,
and I swear to you, I did not look at it.
We have a list of the OHL draft.
WHL.
WHL draft.
All the terrible names combined.
combine now before we get to that after this jesse says he has the best thing of all time
for us to do now many people many people many people have said the best segment we've ever done
is the name segment from last year and that was just by accident many people have said that to
me recently i've seen it on twitter yeah so jesse's backing me up on that yeah i've seen it
But Jesse is saying, you're saying, sir, that it's better than that.
It's going to be a hundred million times better.
Holy Santa Claus balls.
Adam's eating kale to prepare.
I'm eating some of the people that were drafted in the draft.
What?
And I'm drinking your family, Owen.
That's funny because one of the kids drafted was C-A-E-L.
Kale.
Kale.
Like.
What the fuck are you doing out there, guys?
Can I just be honest with you?
We're going to make fun of these names here.
I bet you
I bet you we get tweets
from people who are like
this has some significance
my cousins named this
and you guys are a bunch of jerks
and you know what
I'll say you know what
I am a big jerk
I don't care
just spilled some damn salad
alright let's go
we got Jakin
no we don't
what
J-A-K-I-N
J-A-K-I-N
J-A-K-I-N
Jakin
okay
hold on
are we sure
is that
is that a Canadian
yeah he's drafted
allow me to ask the question
what's Jakin
A person.
What's Jake and Bacon?
They should have just named the fucking kid Bacon.
Oh my god.
Now, here's what I wonder.
This is the first name.
Do these kids get made fun of in school?
Or do they not because they're all named something fucking good?
They go with a kale.
Like kale sitting next to Jake in class.
Ah ha, Jake and fuck you, kale.
You're right.
And sitting next to Jake and kale is Timber.
No!
There's a boy named Timber.
No!
You're named after a Kesha song.
What's his last name?
I only have the first name.
Please be Woods.
I'll bring it up.
I was hoping it'd be Wolf.
Timber Wolf.
That'd be amazing.
Oh, fuck.
Or Lake.
Whatever.
Or Land.
Or Land.
I'm into that.
I'm good with any of that.
Oh, shit.
Oh, parents.
Just the worst.
Okay, by the way, if you name your kid after something, or if you name your kid something
and it could be a product on the shelf
at an organic section of a grocery store,
you've done bad.
And the parents of these kids
are smart and successful enough
to afford to put their kids through WHL hockey.
Yeah.
Like all the way up to WHL hockey
and they come up with Jakem.
There's a jersey.
That's just...
J-E-R-Z-Y.
Oh!
Oh!
Oh!
Oh my, that is like a 12-year-old spelling it on a Justin Bieber poster.
No, you know what Jersey is?
You know what some of these names are, the spelling?
They're like the lesser known members of a rap group from the early 2000s.
Like, Jersey is definitely a member of D12.
It's true.
This is Bizarre Kid.
Proof.
Jersey.
Jersey is definitely one of the St. Lunatics.
There's Nelly Murphy Lee, Jersey.
He's the guy in the video behind Murphy Lee
that's sort of in focus.
He's the goofy dude with the mask.
Yeah, yeah.
Stupid St. Louis.
Oh my God.
Oh my God.
Hey, shut the fuck up.
I love the St. Louis.
I think we should thank the parents
who decided to name their child Nathan.
Sorry.
Can we get that spelled, sir?
N-E-I-T-H-A-N.
Are you sure it's not Nathan?
Is it just Nathan spelled weird?
I think it is.
Yeah, I think it is.
Nathan?
My name's Kayla.
It's spelled G-L-M-X.
All right, all right, all right.
If we could spell Jesse differently,
could you spell Jesse without a J?
It would have to be like a Z-Y, like Jesse.
Like Jesse?
G-Y-S-S-Y.
Jesse.
Jesse.
I think you got it.
No, no, I at the end.
Okay, how do we, how do we Nathan Steve's name?
It has to be a Zed, T, V.
Steven?
No, no.
Zed, D.
Steve.
I, E, V.
Steve.
Steve.
Steve.
Can you do that, Adam?
Now that's, that's might be a little bit easier.
DM.
Just DM.
I think it would be EDM.
E-D-M
Atom
You can say Atom
Up and Atom
Oh what about
Atom
E-T-M
E-T-M
Atom
A-T-M
Cash
A-T-M
A-T-M
It's either electronic dance music
Or
Or A-T-M
Where you get your money
Oh my god these names
These are worse than last year
They're pretty bad
It's like
I bet these aren't real
And the W-H-L
Just thinks this shit's funny
It's great promotion for them
No dude
Like our first guy
was Ned Stark
that would be okay
Wembley
if there was someone named Daenerys in there
I'd be okay with it
now is this Dylan
oh no
D-A-L-L-O-N
D-A-L-L-O-N
is it Dallin
is this kid's name Dallin
or is it a weird spelling of Dylan
you don't have the last names of these kids
I have the list of first names
here's why the last names are important
two there was a wheaton drafted a few years ago in the whl a wheaton okay he was drafted
brought by the brandon wheat kings and his full name was wheaton king
do you think i'm fucking with you that's a thing it up look it up you know there was also a whl
player a few years ago by the name of steel s-t-e-e-l-e boomer okay so steel s-t-e-e-l-e is
cool but that's a last name man that's not a first name steel boomer and boomer is a first
name you got that mixed around boomer steel boomer steel steel boomer is a by the way that is such a
porn name come on part-time hockey player part-time porn star part-time transformer right seriously
I just wonder
It's okay don't worry about it
I do need to know if it's Timberwolf
It'd be so great
Timberlake
Timberland
Imagine if they had custom goal songs
I'm bringing sexy back
Do you guys want to know about
Deegan
Deegan
D-E-E-G-A-N
Deegan
Deegan.
Deegan.
Deegan.
How do you come up with that name, is my question.
And to follow that, okay.
These aren't pre-existing names, are they?
And once you've answered Steve's question, how do you come up with that name, how do you agree on that?
Because you assume, in most of these situations, that a couple agrees on this, right?
Two people, two consenting adults, who they may or may not be together, but they created a kid.
How did they come together in the hospital room
And go, yup
Is it
Is it that
And then their family goes
Yeah, I think that's good too
Like, does the family not step in
Like, if you're, okay
No, because the uncle is Dax
And the aunt is
Javelin
So, okay, me and Caprice
Javelin
Me and Caprice are having a kid, okay
And we name it Javelin
Alright
We tell you guys
Jesse I tell you
And I tell Steve this
You guys are two of my closest friends
You guys are at the hospital
Days later
And I say
We've named our kid Javelin
Because he's long
And he's skinny
And I like to throw him
Across the hall
Alright
Fuck
Steve just spit out his water
Very close
He literally did a spit take
Very very close
Because he's long
And he's skinny
And I throw him
Timber's last name by the way
Oh no
I have the first and last names now
Okay
Timber Lewis.
Oh, that's not as fun.
Nah.
That's not as fun.
Sounds like, man.
So I say the kid's name's Javelin.
Do you not beg me to reconsider?
But Adam.
I mean, we did do that with Steve, right?
We have proof with Iggy that we did kind of say, you know.
It was awful, yeah.
It's not!
You have a very fancy dog.
It's also a dog.
A dog is a dog.
It's allowed to have whack names.
Whack-ass names.
It's not a whack-ass name!
If you named your daughter Iggy, there'd be a lot of problems.
You know what?
Iggy at the dog park is with 19 Stellas, because everyone thinks Stella is a cute dog name.
And a blizzard.
There are two dogs named Diesel.
So fuck off!
Iggy's a decent name.
But I can see how you guys would fit in.
There's a dog that's big and black and has these big, pointy, scary ears.
It's name is Bane.
That's sick.
It is kind of sick.
That's freaking sick.
But you can't tell me Iggy is not good,
especially knowing the backstory.
You're terrible friends.
I drafted in the 10th round.
202nd overall.
Which still isn't that bad, by the way.
Because there's like 46 more rounds.
Yeah.
Portage.
La Prairie.
Hold on.
Wait.
He's named after Portage La Prairie?
That's a city.
That's a damn city.
His name is Portage La Prairie?
No, it's not.
No, it's not.
You're fucking with me.
He's from Portage-le-Prairie.
That's the city where it's from.
Oh.
You fuck.
Oh, you.
I was like, he's named after people putting a canoe on their head.
He's named after a portage.
Like, that's what a portage is.
That's like naming your kid Northwest without the intrigue of the fact that you're Kanye
West.
Like, at least people expect it of you, and at the end of the day, you're rich, so fuck
you.
Do you want to get back to the real name?
Yeah, yes.
Okay.
We can go with Nickshaw.
Nick
N-I-C-K-S-H-A
So his last name is Sha
Nope
His first name is Nick Sha
How do you spell it?
N-I-C-K-S-H-A
That feels like it could be a name
From somebody like
From like
Slovakia or
I could see that
I could see that
That makes phonetic sense
From like a Slovak
Forgive any Slovaks
That listen to this podcast
Who think I might be wrong
That'd be great if they all message in,
that's a bullshit name.
Yeah.
We would never name our kids that.
I don't know.
It just feels like,
that feels a little bit more...
Tell him, Yaroslav.
Yeah, exactly.
Tell him.
Yeah, exactly.
You know?
Like, I could see a Nick Shaw next to Yaromir.
What about Killian?
How do you spell Killian?
K-I-L-L-I-A-N.
You know what's just amazing to me, though?
What?
This isn't just a sample size of here are some of the names in Western Canada.
These are just people drafted into the WHL draft.
Right.
Like, out of what, 250 people?
300 people?
Something like that?
Maybe 400 people?
And we're coming out with Nickshaw and not Javelin.
What was the other one?
Killian?
Killian Kecker Olsen.
that is a cartoon butler
what about Cade
Killian
what's his last name
Cade Olsen
Cade Olsen
defenseman
no
now Cade Olsen
has just given himself
a bright new future
as the newest member
of One Direction
I totally agree
I could not agree more
with that
you're absolutely right
he has great flow
who's the
yeah he must
namely Cade
you gotta
He better be a stallion with a name like Taylor.
Cade Olsen wears board shorts in February.
Yes.
For sure.
His jaw is a match.
Yes.
And I bet girls at his high school hang off of him.
They're crawling on him.
Cade Olsen doesn't know it, but he just became friends with Taylor Lautner.
Yes.
He doesn't know it, but he is.
He's friends with him.
Yes.
He's friends now.
And they are equally in shape.
Oh, my God.
You're so right.
Wow.
Cade Olsen definitely wears board shorts and sandals in February.
He's a great surfer.
Never surfed in his life.
Yeah, right?
Yes.
Token, what have I told you?
You can play bass guitar.
Cade?
What have I told you?
Cade, what have I told you?
You can surf.
Your name is Cade.
It's funny, guys.
I just found this surfboard in the basement,
and I don't know what to do.
Never seen it before.
I don't know what it's doing there.
Oh, my God.
We talked about Kirby last episode.
In the summer, Cade works at Aeropostale.
Oh for sure
Oh for sure
Oh shit
I love this game
I forgot how much
I love this game
Last episode
We talked about Kirby
Well there's two Kirby's
In the draft
Not one kid
But there's two kids
How do I feel about Kirby
When he scores
Does he go
Sorry
You know how Kirby
Does a happiness
Above his head
And he just waves
His hands in the air
I have expected you
To go
I can just imagine
It's the finals of the seventh game.
And it's like, Kirby sucks up a pass from Cade Olsen.
If the announcers don't say, Kirby sucks up a pass, they're missing out.
Kirby sucks up a pass from DeBricka Shaw, Javelin.
Oh, my God.
Any more?
No.
I think we're done.
Holy shit.
But Kate Olsen is definitely in the next Expendables.
Yeah.
And by the way, anybody that names their kid, if your last name is Olsen, you are not allowed
to name your kid anything that rhymes with Kate Olsen.
Yeah.
As in Mary Kate Olsen.
Oh, I didn't even.
Come on.
That didn't even occur to me.
That didn't even occur to me.
I was too busy thinking about Aeropostale.
I feel like, honestly, I feel like Kate has like a big long mane of black hair.
I mean that.
He's probably a stallion.
No, he's got the dirty blonde going on.
Oh, really?
Oh, yeah.
Maybe even a strawberry blonde.
There's a boy named Boston.
My neighbor's dog is named Boston.
That's rude.
That's a good example of a cool dog name that you gave to a child.
Boston Billis, a goalie out of Langley, B.C.
Boston Billis.
That actually does kind of sound like a B.C. goalie name.
because there's something about
something about BC
names that makes me feel like
like
they're a baseball player. You know what I mean?
Yep. Like Chuck Knobloch
couldn't have possibly been a
refrigerator repairman. No. He had
to play professional baseball. He did.
That was his destiny. And what was it?
Dick Trickle had to be a NASCAR
driver. Dick Trickle, there was no
other... Your name is Dick Trickle.
There's no Dick Trickle in accounting.
No. No. You're not
is going to see Mr. Trickle up the
street at the library, okay?
It's Dick Trickle, the freaking driver.
That's it. Oh my god.
Did we talk about Caden? Yeah, we did.
There's two Cadens. Caden's a little bit more
mainstream. I can see that. Yeah, now.
Now it's mainstream.
Don't name a kid Caden. Do we go to
school with a single Caden? No.
Alright, I think we have our last one.
Do Steve's and Adam's get picked
on in school these days?
Is that what happens?
You're a regular.
Steve
Oh there's not a thousand of you
Loser
Oh out of that
Oh you ate half
Oh I bet you feel good about yourself
Oh Mike
Real original
Fuck you
Ryan
Get out of here Ryan
Kashawn
Kashawn
How does one spell Kashawn?
K
I
S
H
A
U
M
Kashawn
Kashawn
Kashawn
Keyshawn?
Keyshawn, maybe?
Oh, Keyshawn!
Keyshawn, I can see.
That's not how you spell Keyshawn.
No.
But it's Keyshawn.
I think there's a trend where people, because of the internet, and I blame a lot of stuff on the internet,
but I think because of Instagram and Facebook and Twitter, it has created this environment where
everybody wants everybody else to think that they're the next Albert Einstein of everything.
Albert Einstein, that's a great first name.
Albert Einstein Jones.
yes right
and it's like
I'm gonna name my kids
something different
so I can differentiate
myself from my friends
rather than going
what name
am I giving my child
to set them up for
you know what I bet
a shit load
you know what I bet
a shit load of kids
are gonna be named
in a few years
like we're gonna start
seeing them in school
and maybe even
in the WHL
Tesla
Elon
Elon
there are gonna be
oh yeah
yeah
everyone's gonna be an Elon
no no
but then there's gonna be
too many Elons
so they're gonna get
hip to that
and name their kid
Musk
or like Keylong
you can't name your kid
after what you smell like
this is my kid
Musk Ox
we can also end on
Edge Lambert
his first name is Edge
his last name is Lambert
okay he's in the wrong
profession
he should be a rock star
Edge yeah
Edge Lambert
finished second
at American Idol
yeah right
but that's not a stage name
he was born with it
Edge Lambert
finished second
oh for sure
for sure
Edge Lambert is like
And all the girls
Would love Edge Lambert
CM Punk's foil
Yeah
Yeah
Wrong career
Wow
You know what
You know what's really great
When the Leafs have a great draft pick
And the guy that they're gonna be after
Is one of those names
Edge Lambert
It's gonna be hilarious
It's gonna be hilarious
So now that we've successfully
Made fun of everybody in your family
Who's under the age of 16
And probably has a name like that
And you're offended
Jesse or Steve
Do you want to say something
before we get to the
greatest thing ever
that Jesse's
okay if you can name
all of the members
of Sum 41
except for one of them
the remaining guy
is Edge Lambert
you just didn't know it
this whole time
you didn't know it
he's the skinny guy
in the background
oh for sure
yeah
or he's the guy
behind Murphy Lee
I'm so sad
is this topic done
I could try one more
but
no it's done
it would be stretching
like a Layton
hey until next year
you know what's great
yeah
Layton
Layton's damn near normal
Like next year
We're gonna get a fucking
Spatula
Spatula
McGillicuddy
But here's the thing
I'm coming up with
Names of things
Yeah
They're just
Smashing sounds together
These are people
Who exist
That are named
These things
Do you think they're just
Getting prefixes
And suffixes
And just
They got like a name
Generator
I'm telling you
People don't name their kids so their kids have a great name anymore.
They name their kids so their parents can ask the other parents,
oh, where'd you come up with that name?
I'm telling you, it's a conversation piece.
You're giving your man or woman,
that's how you need to look at a baby, by the way,
you're giving your adult human being,
you're giving them a name because of a conversation you want to have once.
At a dinner party.
At a dinner party over some Merlot.
Yeah, really.
Yeah.
I mean I honestly think
This is my son
Slash professional wrestler
Edge Lambert
Kind of gross isn't it
And his tag team partner
Steel Boomer
And his novelty item
Slash brother
Wheaton King
You know when you say
Wheaton King
Fuck
Wheaton King
What the fuck man
That's a person
Where is your
Where are your family
Where are your friends
And also
Can you imagine
I just want you to imagine
Okay so you come over
to my house, I got an infant's
son. That infant's son is four weeks
old and you guys are holding that son for the first
time. You go, what's its name? And I say,
Steele. Do you look at a baby and look,
yeah, I see Steele.
I see Steele. I get it.
Thanks. And then
we chest bump and break fucking beer
bottles over our faces. Pillies, for sure.
Right, obviously. Oh, Saskatchewan
Champagne.
You guys.
Yes, Jesse. We found
Hot Take Mountain.
What?
We found the place where all hot takes are born.
Shut up.
And where they come from and where they exist.
And the greatest hot takery on earth.
The birthplace of hot takes.
All hot takes.
It's like a pancake factory for hot takes.
What is this?
This place.
Fox Sports Radio Online.
Their morning show.
So it only exists online.
Because there are morning shows now that only exist online
I've seen them tweet a bunch of things
From their Fox Sports Radio
Twitter account
That I could have swore their account got hacked
Or it's a parody account
That's just real
This is the place where Hot Take is birthed
It's birthed by the way
Going in the 6th round of the next year's WHL
I can't wait for Mark Madden to go work with them
Do you want me to run down
The list of topics they talked about
Yes, every day
you know what
we can
this is great
because we can do this
every time
every day
what are they talking about today
they openly do articles
so it's a Fox Sports station
they'll be like
here's something
an ESPN writer said
and fuck them
yeah
oh yeah
and that's
can I just quickly
before you start
the thing is
is that Fox Sports
this is only online
that's a big deal guys
for broadcast
that they're putting
all that effort
into a quote unquote
morning show
that streams live
frankly
it is a good idea
and it's brave
it sounds like
the execution may be off a bit
Jesse, would you like to continue?
So, it's hosted by Mike
North and Andy Furman
Their show is called
Fox Sports Daybreak
Internet only morning show, runs every day
Every day they post
what they talked about that day
So, May 6th, which is two days ago
Four days ago
Their topic of the day was
Joe Paterno still getting
too much blame for Sandusky's sins.
Oh my god.
Now that was in the news-ish
over the last few days.
Yeah, because he's known since 1976!
What?!
Okay.
Yeah, but Adam, you won a bunch of games.
Yeah, you're right.
You're right.
It's amazing what you can forgive
if the person's a winner.
He's dead now, so that means the bad things he did
cancels it out.
April 20th, they wrote an article which they titled, Greg Popovich is a tool.
A couple of days before that, they wrote, Rob Manfred is a tool.
Greg Popovich, I believe, is the coach of the only team that will challenge Golden State.
Like one of the best basketball coaches in the history of...
No, not even basketball, like pro sports.
Oh yeah, 100%.
I've never seen a coach openly shit talk how many rings he has at a parade.
did you see that
where he's like
one
oh yeah
and there was two
and then
three
it's amazing
on March 7th
at 8am
Mike North
and Andy Furman
talked about how
and I quote
Kyrie Irving
is a dumb player
LeBron James
should slap him
North and Furman
trashed Kyrie Irving
for being a dumb player
And say LeBron James needs to bitch slap him
For popping off on Twitter
That's in the description?
This is their blog
I am reading from their website
Okay, okay, okay
You know what?
I know what they're going for
I know what they're going for
They're going for having their show be talked about
By shows like ours
And on Twitter
And on Facebook
And all that shit
And they won
They just won
They're trying to find an audience
On the internet
by appealing to an audience
that doesn't know how to use the internet.
Like, honestly.
Are you kidding me?
Are you kidding me?
You post inflammatory shit?
You don't know how to plug in a Wi-Fi cable
if you're that stupid.
I'm sorry.
No, your parents do it for you.
Ah, maybe.
That's how it works.
Jesus, this is...
What else have we got?
I'm not going to read that one.
You're not even going to read it?
It's a little far.
Here, here, wait.
Which one?
Alright.
Hold on, let me see it.
Read it!
They're not your words.
They're not your words.
Whoa.
They're not your words.
No, you can read it.
That's the title.
That's the title of the fucking thing.
What's the site?
It's, uh, here.
Deadspin screencapped the best ones,
but it's foxsportsradio.iheart.com.
It's on iHeart.
Yeah, this is where it runs.
Fox Sports is affiliated with iHeart, and they run it every morning.
Wow.
iHeart's the biggest radio app in the United States and Australia.
So if you went to foxsportsradio.iheart.com slash foxsportsdaybreak, you'll find all of their blogs.
Wow.
Okay.
So they wrote on December 22, 2015,
Daybreak hosts, Matthew Stafford's wife is a greedy pig.
What's the title?
Was their topic of the day.
What's the title?
Matthew Stafford's wife is a greedy pig.
do they want to have jobs after this one's done or have any sort of respect
maybe this is their last shot dude if maybe i don't know did they get fired for the last job
if this was what you had to do to continue to get a paycheck would you not just say i'm going to do
something else i was kind of saying to jesse like i watched like some popular youtubers
and i look at what they do and i go you know what it wouldn't be that much harder
to be, like, bigger.
But there's just some things I don't want to do.
Yeah.
There's just some things I don't want to do for my soul.
We were talking off mic.
Physically and talent-wise,
they wouldn't be that difficult to pull off,
but emotionally, they'd be hard.
There's a couple of guys
that they're going to put on Fox Sports 1
because they've got the guy that ran ESPN
and created the explosion of ESPN banter television, basically,
and they brought him to Fox.
And so that's how Skip Bayless has jumped ship
And they're going to do another show
And I forget what it's called
And Deadspin was talking about it
And it's going to run for an hour at 6 o'clock
And they're like, oh my god, an hour of these two windbags
I don't know who they are, I've never heard of them
I'm sure they're big to somebody
Will it be a little bit of what I was talking about?
Oh yeah!
Yes
And they made a really good point in it
And I thought they made a really good point
That I think is interesting
There seems to be this tendency
that to make great television or to make great radio,
the hosts must find a disagreement with each other.
And I don't think that's true.
I think that's just easy.
Well, Adam, you just laugh along and agree with me.
Well, of course.
I read that.
Did you read that?
I read that too.
I read that, so it's true.
And it's funny because I have been told by consultants before
that A, I should pretend to be single.
I was also told, well, you've got to find the...
the controversy
between you and your co-host.
Which, by the way,
half your stories are,
so here's how I fucked up
in my relationship today.
Yeah.
So it's the dumbest advice ever.
Sometimes it's not about
disagreeing with each other.
It's about having
a different angle on something.
And I think that
the angle thing is harder.
Heaven forbid
you should be authentic.
Right?
Heaven forbid.
And that's the thing is that,
Steve, I have no problem
agreeing with you,
but I can add to your point
or I can have a differing view
on that point.
And we're still having
a discussion that's interesting.
whereas these guys just go
red is the color blue
and the guy goes no red is the color red
actually
actually oh yeah
and when we come back
and when we come back we're going to debate yellow
it's oh
it's disrespectful to the league
MVP they lack respect
this is great so we're going to come back to this well
great would you guys
be interested in doing a
NHL headline type of
game with these.
Yeah!
Yeah?
Yes!
And then you give us
the ridiculous title back.
Yes.
Not getting home early tonight.
Yeah.
No, we're not doing that today.
Not now.
Next up.
Oh.
So we'll just, yeah,
what are the idiots
at Fox Sports 1 Radio?
I'll give you, like,
the scenario.
Talking about you.
This is great.
I love this.
Okay, perfect.
Should we do the mic
how they discuss
LeBron James
unwilling to take direction.
So they said,
the title was,
LeBron James
is the real problem
in Cleveland.
I'm sure that's how Cleveland feels too
I'm sure everybody in Cleveland is like
God I wish we didn't have LeBron
So there you go
Gee whiz
Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love
Those are the stars here
By the way
With no disrespect
Here's how badly the Marlies are beating Albany's ass
I thought they were just replaying the game we just watched
Remember how I said
Oh yeah and they won 3-2
No that was the end of the second period
That was the end of the second period
It's 6-1 now
That's how badly they're killing them
Let's do the press conference boys
Oh wow, the Marlies just scored again
Holy crap
Speaking of that
Okay, so I think it's pretty safe to say that game is over
The Caps-Penguins game will not be over by the time we finish recording this
But should we say goodbye to the Capitals and risk jinxing?
Yeah, let's do it
Should we say RIP?
Caps, girl bye
Actually, boy bye, like Beyonce
Boy bye
Everything you own in a box
To the left
Right
Never made it out of the second round
Alexander Ovechkin
No they made it out of the third round once
Didn't they make it to the third round
The Dale Hunter year
I think so
Yeah he's been to a conference finals
I think so
One time
They didn't win
Damn
But this has to do
With what we were talking about before
And I guess we forgot to bring up
Can we do it now
Before the press conference
Real quick
Sure
Even though we fired
The press conference thing
It's already out there
No who cares
We can do it again
What is it
Well no
The two best teams
In the east
Are facing each other
In the second round
And one of them
Is going to be gone
In the second round
Marlies and Devils
Whoever wins this series
Obviously I want the Marlies
To win but
Whoever wins
It's kind of a tragic thing
For the AHL
It's the top two teams
Forget conference
Forget division
The league
Top two teams in the league
And one of them
Is going to be out
At the end of the second round
In the west
It's the exact same thing
Dallas finished first
In the conference
St. Louis finished second in the entire conference
And they play each other in the second round
It makes no sense
I need to eat guff for a sec
I said the Sharks were going to have a cup of tea
Against the Preds
Game 7
And I've also been pretty dismissive of the Dallas Stars
Who just forced game 7
And they haven't played a damn game these playoffs
Without Tyler Sagan
They might make it to the third round without him
Sorry, did I say with?
Anyway, they haven't played a damn game with Tyler Sagan
The Dally Starsman
Dally Starsman
with
Curry Letneman
and
Anthony Newman
I heard his nickname
going into the playoffs
was
Kerry Letneman
am I right?
am I right?
so
don't give me that look
do we need to start
a bad joke jar?
I feel like we need to
I feel like
and then we need to go back
no Adam
I like not being broke
Dude I bombed in Starbucks today
Jesse was like
Jesse asked me to explain something I said like four times
Until I was just like Jesse just let me wear it
Just let me wear my bad joke
God bless you for at least having the patience to go through it
Yeah Steve what did you try and say
When I tried to buy you a coffee
Oh
Cause I didn't realize he was paying
So what I said was and I'll take a Thanksgiving dinner
And I said
What
The point was
at Thanksgiving dinner
would be an expensive
and ridiculous thing
to expect your friend to buy.
And then I had to follow up with
is that a phrase people say?
Because the only reason
someone would say something
so stupid
is that it was an old phrase
that people used to say.
It was at that moment
I realized I'm actually a father.
I didn't know that
but I'm now a dad.
Carrie Ledman.
Marns Barn.
Oh, fuck.
Let's move on.
Carrie Ledman and Marns Barn.
I'm Kimmy C.
Who I assume named their
Reddit name after the wine.
says that they have a huge presentation
on Thursday. You're fucked.
That determines whether or not I graduate
high school. Can you give
them some words of encouragement?
Steve and Adam, go.
Just forget about it. Start a video blog.
You're fine.
No, wait. Okay, so this presentation determines whether
or not you will... They graduate high school.
Okay. Why did you not work hard
enough throughout high school?
First of all, how dare you?
Why did you not work hard enough throughout high school
that you've left it this late
to come down
to come down
it's coming down
to a project for you?
A presentation.
Let me give you
some life advice, okay?
Let me give you
some life advice.
Do not
let it come down
to the last second.
You don't want
a buzzer beater
when it comes to something
as important as high school, okay?
But this could be
a great moment.
You need
no, it's still
not a great moment
because okay,
if it takes one project
one project
to pass high school
No one remembers
game seven goals
Then how great were your grades otherwise?
They were not good.
No one gives a shit that the Vancouver Canucks
lost three straight games to the Blackhawks
after being up three nothing on them in 2011.
All they know is they won game seven in overtime.
That is what you know.
All I know is this.
All I know is this.
If it takes one project for you to pass or fail high school,
you screwed up elsewhere,
and you need to give the whole thing a look.
They were looking for words of encouragement, people.
I would encourage you to be smarter.
That's what I would encourage.
Okay.
You're about to be in a high pressure situation.
Because you fucked up.
Because you fucked up.
Now, here's the thing.
You got some time and you're wasting it listening to this podcast.
In the middle of the sentence I'm speaking, stop listening.
Prepare.
Okay.
Know this shit.
Know the stuff you're talking about front to back.
You can't be looking at any papers.
Well, maybe for reference, maybe flashcards and stuff.
If you can't be nervous or hesitant or unsure of the content you're speaking of,
you need to know this shit like it's your best friend.
Know it, study it, kill it.
You don't stand a chance.
Wow.
No, no, no.
No, no, you can't backtrack now.
I agree with Steve.
Also, very key, get a good sleep.
Don't stay up late and don't lose sleep because you will not absorb the information I always find with studying.
You must get like a full, if you're an eight-hour sleeper, get your eight hours.
It's worth it.
You will absorb more information in a shorter period of time.
And you will stumble if you are poorly rested.
Also, be careful how much coffee you have right before the presentation
because you may be a little too jittery and nervous.
And you'll already have plenty of adrenaline going through your bloodstream.
And it'll be the end of your high school era.
It'll be over, hopefully.
Someone on Reddit wants to know,
When do the Rangers blow it up and trade Lundqvist?
Ooh, I don't know if they trade Lundqvist ever.
We solved the least problem.
Oh, done.
And done.
Yeah.
And done.
Take Bernier straight up and done.
If I were the Rangers, if I were an intelligent owner of the New York Rangers,
I'd say blow it up this year and trade Lundqvist to a team like Nashville
that really needs a goalie.
Nashville really needs a goalie.
Pecorino.
You know who'd look good in Nashville?
He's doing great in these playoffs.
Believe me, I'm a detractor of Pecorino.
Steven Stamkos would look great in Nashville.
You know?
Yeah, you know what?
You make a good point.
It's true.
Him and Ryan Johansson would be fun to play together,
but he would have to be,
one of them would have to switch to Wayne.
Yeah, he would.
And they probably have the money.
Mm-hmm.
They have the room.
I can't imagine.
I don't know about the money.
I can't see, in all honesty,
I can't see the Rangers trading Lundqvist.
I can't see that happening
But I do see this
I think that Stahl
If I were them
I'd let Stahl go
I'd trade Nash
I'd start to get rid of those things
If you can trade Nash
I don't know if you can
Matt Zuccarello is a great player
Try to clear up your blue line
So you got Dan Boyle coming off the books
Dan Girardi has not looked good
You got McDonough
You got McDonough
McDonough's pretty good
You know
Now it's time to start clearing the pieces out
Like the Leafs did
Now it's time to flush the system a little bit.
But you're asking, and it's hard to do.
We, on the outside, have a different view of it,
but as hard as an NHL GM,
that's probably a playoff team in New York still.
And you're asking a GM to give up a team
that's probably going to make the playoffs
and strip it to the bone.
Hard to do.
Which, it's New York, man.
I don't know about that fan base.
Pay now, gain later.
Get a head start on it.
Because here's the thing.
We have yet to see a team that needs to rebuild.
Like, they come to the end of their window, their cycle, and actually recognize, you know what?
Yeah, it's time.
Because the teams that do or the teams that would, let's say Detroit recognizes it this summer the way they should.
Even they're not a great example.
I know, but that's the point.
Because they're at the very end of it.
But, Steve, we haven't had an example.
That's my point.
But the team that actually is honest with themselves
and figures it out first will bounce back faster.
Guarantee it.
Guarantee it.
Canucks, too.
I say this.
Rangers and Canucks and Detroit need to do the same thing.
Time to start clearing the people out and rebuilding.
Canucks, of those three, have the best prospects,
and they've got a really good draft pick in the first round this year.
Fifth, I want to say.
Yeah.
I mean, they've got some—they could bounce back very quickly.
it's just a matter of
can you figure out
your options
fast enough
and be honest
with yourself
and go
we're not going to
win the cup
with this roster
Edmonton by the way
almost gets to
save themselves
from themselves
they could probably
get Jacob Chikrin
at fourth overall
no one would be like
oh it's an off the board
pick and then you get
a great defenseman
just throwing that
out there
yeah
random
was that the question?
no no
it was something to do
with Lundqvist
yeah
would they trade Lundqvist
I don't think
they'd trade him
Do you know the final two players left in the NHL 17 cover vote?
I actually don't.
I know Conor McDavid didn't make it.
When his campaign was pretty freaking cool, so I'm surprised.
And I feel like it's rigged because how does Conor McDavid not win that?
If you don't, okay, you know how you don't have Conor McDavid win it?
Because he finished second to John Scott.
Yes.
Dude, and I'm not making a joke.
I'm being serious.
How sick and how hilarious would that have been?
Would have been great.
It would have been great.
Especially a picture of him at the All-Star game.
The cover would have been him at the All-Star game.
Yeah, with the swipe.
The glove sweep.
We didn't get behind that.
We thought about it briefly, but it was like, eh, we've caused enough shit.
I don't want to get in more trouble.
The final two players left for the cover vote are Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues.
Pretty damn good.
And Joe Pavelski of the San Jose Sharks.
oh reminder no sydney crosby ever who you voting for once
i'm just glad it's not a blackhawk again with no offense to san jose joe joe pavelski
dude he's really good i know but with no offense joe pavelski not brent burns here's why you go
joe pavelski team usa okay and he's one of team usa's better players you're right
yeah they did a thing
where they
you could
they picked teams
from each of the
World Cup teams
I think it was
I'm partial to
oh is that how they did it
that makes sense
might be
I'm partial to Tarasenko
because he played on
CKSA Moscow
and that's my team
SKA
SKA sorry
yeah they did one
representative from
each World Cup of Hockey
team
St. Petersburg
sorry
one representative
from each World Cup
of Hockey team
so
and it came down
that's why McDavid
was in all the
Canadian stuff
All right, that makes way more sense.
I'd go with Pavelski.
But, like, even though he's a great player,
like, is that one of the bigger names in the sport?
Well, that's not the NHL.
Well, it is the NHL's problem.
It's also EA's problem.
I think, you know, if you had a problem with John Scott
being in the All-Star game
because he somehow wasn't a big enough star for your game,
now you've got your actual game
that's going to go into 10 million homes or more,
10 million-plus homes.
your video game.
What?
It's a little different.
Steve, it's on the cover.
A little different.
Joe Pavelski's kind of really good at hockey.
I don't think it's any different.
We're talking about marketable stars.
Marketable stars.
Steve,
how many Joe Pavelski jerseys outside of San Jose
do you see walking around?
Make the noise.
It's the Joe Rogan I'm not sure sound.
My cousin.
The answer is zero, Steve.
He's a Sharks fan.
Zero.
The answer is zero.
Not a lot of Tarasenko jerseys.
I rarely see yours poke out.
Well, it's because I'm not wearing my Tarasenko jersey to work.
You should wear it next podcast.
Maybe I should.
I'm just saying, weak, man.
Weak.
Should be Crosby versus Ovechkin.
That's where they should have started.
All right.
We're going to give you two people to vote on.
Is it going to be Crosby or is it going to be Ovechkin?
Not in multiple rounds.
Personally, I would probably prefer Tarasenko.
Me too.
I think they should choose Pavelski.
Sales will rocket in California.
Skyrocket.
No, they won't.
It won't make a damn difference that Joe Pavelski is on that.
You're wrong.
I'm not wrong.
It doesn't matter.
Because you know what?
San Jose still, I believe, are they having trouble selling out?
No, no, they're okay.
It's Florida that had trouble selling a playoff game.
San Jose's good.
San Jose's good.
I always just look like there are probably teams out there
that haven't even had a guy on the cover yet.
Arizona?
Yeah, probably.
And the Sharks, I think this would be their third guy in recent memory.
Because they had Owen Nolan.
And Joe had to be on it, too.
Joe Thornton was, but I don't know if he was a Shark when he was on the cover.
Good question.
I want to say yes.
I want to say yes, too.
Nothing beats the Danny through the year, though.
And then it'd be Pavelski.
That's a lot of sharkage in 16 years.
17 years, I guess.
That's a lot of sharkage.
2000 was great.
I played that on my PC.
I was a keyboard wizard.
I don't know, man.
That's back when you could stack your team, too.
That's right.
That was the Chris Pronger on the front, right?
Wasn't that the Chris Pronger year?
Oh, no. Owen Nolan was 2001.
Joe Thornton was on the cover of NHL 10
in a San Jose Sharks jersey.
Steve had the game
It must have
It was?
But then why does that say 2009?
Well that one says 10
What the fuck is going on here?
That's wrong
No because 2009
That wasn't
What the hell is going on?
Anyway there's a lot of sharks
I don't know
A lot of sharks
Oh they just showed that Johnson hit
I'm just gonna
I'm just gonna go out and say that
That
If I am the marketing team
For EA
And the NHLPA
and the NHL
all the teams get together
I go
here are our two biggest stars
Crosby and Ovechkin
let's have a vote off
between the two of them
end of story
done
finished
let's not even talk about it
I think
what
what were you going to say Jesse
here's the story behind
the Joe Thornton cover
Joe Thornton
was originally chosen
but EA switched
to Danny Heatley
after Thornton
was accused of
assaulting two police officers
oh
after the 2003
2004 season
see is the choice
of Danny Heatley
No, but then they had to take Danny Healy off the cover as well.
And I think they ended...
Well, yes, because that was when the accident happened.
And then I believe they ended up with Joe Sackick.
You would be correct.
Joe Sackick.
Why do I know that?
A lot of tough history with the cover.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Bit of a curse.
Bit of a curse.
And then it was finally broken, and then it was very not broken.
Yeah.
All right.
Any other questions?
No.
We're good.
We're good
Okay
Obviously it should be
Austin Matthews
I agree
In a Winnipeg Jet Street
Alright guys
So we are
We're done for today
But we will be back
And remember to donate
To our page if you can
If you have a spare
A few spare bucks
For the CWHL
Yes
And also to the fires
In Fort McMurray
Yes
Fires
Fires to

Bingo
