Hi, Adam. My stomach is noisy.
Panago Pizza presents
S.C.P.
The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle and Adam Wilde.
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm happy to report as this show begins that we are officially watching hockey!
Man, it's some sort of record. September the 8th.
Now, if we watched KHL hockey, we could be watching this earlier.
However, we don't.
So we're watching World Cup
Czech Republic and Russia
In St. Petersburg
Czech Republic up 1-0
Milan Mihalic
Did not score the goal
But he was on the ice
He did not, yeah
Toronto Maple Leaf
Milan Mihalic, by the way
So we have a couple things
To cover today
The show's gonna be
A little bit short
Because quite honestly
We just came from a demo
Of NHL 17
And Jesse and I
It took a solid hour
To get back
Yeah, because Toronto traffic
Is horrendous
And also Jesse and I
Have a meeting
After our show?
Yeah
Would that have been a better idea?
Probably would have been a better idea
But then Steve would have
Had to stay downtown
The whole day
Well, you would have been down here at four anyways.
No, well, no, that's a phone call, Jesse.
Jesse, yes, he's got a phone call.
Sorry, I'm trying to work it out in my mind.
I would have figured it out.
I figured, I thought, okay, well.
Anyway.
Apparently I was wrong.
Anyway, I just want to say, it's nice to be back.
It is nice to be back.
I think all is right with the world.
Just the three of us, too.
Well, yeah, it is.
And, you know, I'm excited because today on the show, Skip Bayless is back.
As a guest.
I wish
Can you imagine
I wish
Tim Tebow signed today
How perfect would that be
Well I mean like I said
Like I said we got
We got
Stephen A. Smith
Talked about hockey
Skip Bayless is back on television
There's hockey back on television
What's his name
I can't think of it
Don't help
Give us a hint
Barney the Dinosaur
Quarterback now baseball player
Tim Tebow
Tim Tebow signed
Two seconds ago
Did you say Tim Tebow
I wasn't listening
You weren't
And listen, I'm just saying all is right with the world.
Things are good.
Things are happy again.
And I want to start with that.
Okay.
I want to start with Tim Tebow.
Not hockey.
By the way, we do have the national anthem for Team Europe,
Should They Win, coming up.
But I want to know what your actual thoughts are, both of you,
on the whole Tebow phenomena.
Because has there been an athlete who's been a less good athlete,
higher touted out of college, and more beloved?
is he beloved because everyone seems to be pretty stoked for his inevitable failure and that's what
i was tweeting today like all right the mets signed him so what good if he's what do you think
if he's bad they're gonna promote him gonna put him on their starting rotation that seems to happen
i mean it happened in the nfl it's not gonna happen do you want to know how this is a serious
job for Tim Tebow? He'll be
missing some of the instructional practice
so he can fulfill his job at ESPN.
So you know this is serious.
You know?
This is a serious endeavor.
He's gonna miss some practices for ESPN.
I was tweeting today and I
got lit up for it. I don't have
a problem with him trying.
And if a team wants to offer
him a contract, so be it.
Oh, well, you're
depriving some other player who's worked
words out of a contract. Take that up with
the Mets. Take it up with the Jays
who apparently wanted him. Take it up with the
20 teams that showed up to his open workout.
And by the way, if you're at that level, then
be better than Tim Tebow.
Yeah, yeah. And why not
try? If you're him, why not
try?
I don't understand that. Because here's
the thing. Tim Tebow has been on television
shows like home reno shows
because he's got the family friendly
element, right? He's the guy, I'm never having
sex before marriage i want to find the right person i live right i do right and that's cool
you know you need you need a taylor swift of sports you need that but so wait he's a snake
behind the scenes that's not no no i'm not saying snake emoji but he's you know like he plays the
good guy he plays the good guy and that's cool and he probably is a good guy we probably have
him on the show and really like him but i what i wonder about this all is why if you're tim tebow
are you going back to play baseball
when you've got your nice, cushy Tim Tebow job at ESPN?
He needs more money.
Is that what it is?
He's not generating enough publicity to sustain his living.
So he needs more publicity, so he needs to join baseball.
To make $20,000 in the minors?
He needs to up his brand.
Him being out there in the world is upping his stock right now.
We're talking about Tim Tebow.
We wouldn't be otherwise.
so we have to do something to generate the tim tebow brand so this is interesting you think it's
a long play then because like adam just said he's about to take a pay cut probably i can't imagine
like i don't know what minor league baseball players make nothing yeah nothing yeah it's got
to be less than what someone at espn makes i would assume or uh yeah at very least the same amount
but when when it comes time to renegotiate with tsn you're now saying because of this whole saga
He can make more
Tim Tebow
Is gonna start selling
Tim Tebow hats
And apparel
And sweatpants
With his own
Custom logo on it
From Nike
Or from Adidas
This is for sure
This is the rumor
That he's coming out
With his own line
He needs to generate
His brand
You know
He needs to up his game
And he's doing that
We're talking about
Tim Tebow in September
For no reason
Tim Tebow and Colin Kaepernick
Have the highest selling
Jerseys in sports again
It's like
What year is this?
Wow that's true
What year?
Good point
Good point
Wow
You know I
Chris Pronger makes a comeback
Why not
Why not
He's a 29 year old guy
Who hasn't played baseball
Since he was 17
He's just a guy
He's just an athlete
Yeah at this point
He's just a guy
You're not
You're not an athlete
At this point
At this point
You're a guy
Cause everybody played baseball
When they were 17
Cause baseball
You don't just pick up
And play baseball
At least not up here
You don't
I'm sure the states they do
We don't know what it's like
To be Tim Tebow
And I'm not saying that
For me
It's a story
What I'm saying is
it's not it would be unreasonable for me to be like i'm gonna hold open workouts for a baseball
team to snatch me up you you can be a part of this if you want for him it's not unreasonable
then like you said he's 29 he's in the prime of his career he's in great jacked up yeah
and i mean you need more than that to be a baseball player or any kind of athlete like
Hand-eye coordination?
Yeah, exactly.
But it's not totally, totally ridiculous.
It's a little bit ridiculous.
Did you read the scouting report?
I heard it's pretty bad.
Okay, so Jesse, I know read it most thoroughly of us all.
A fringe outfield consensus?
Jesse, I'm going to let you take this one.
What was the consensus?
He looks like a guy trying to play baseball.
He looks like a model who's acting as a baseball player.
Like, he knows how to throw, but it looks like he's trying to fake his throw as a baseball player.
And everybody was saying that, oh, he hit a bomb.
Like, he hit a home run at 430-something yards, which, I mean, is impressive.
But you're pitching against the machine.
You know, what about when it's double-A, then triple-A, then MLB?
Like, I don't know.
He throws you a curveball.
Yeah.
How is he with change-ups?
Exactly.
And the other thing was, he couldn't take ground balls.
Yeah, which is a little important in baseball.
It's a little bit important.
Probably, I would say, the single most important thing in baseball
is being able to take a ground ball, as far as defense goes.
So I was defending him, I guess, in a sense, on Twitter.
And some people were like, yeah, when Michael Jordan switched to baseball,
did people give him this kind of grief?
And I was like, yes.
Yes, they did.
There's a whole conspiracy theory behind that, by the way.
Do you know that?
Oh, there's tons.
The ESPN 30 for 30 on it is fantastic.
Oh, I haven't.
Is there a 30 for 30 on that?
On the conspiracy theories?
Yeah.
On the whole saga of him playing baseball.
Yeah.
Do you believe any of them?
It's funny.
You go, you're probably talking about the conspiracy theory that he was asked to step
away from basketball for a year, right?
Because of his gambling debts.
Yeah.
Alleged.
And it's funny.
They do talk about that and they do entertain it as a possible theory, but then they interview
some guys like, sorry, sorry.
the NBA told their biggest cash cow ever
nah go away
yeah I'm sure that happened
for sure yeah that makes perfect sense
you know so
also his dad loved baseball
and it's another one of those things where like Tiger Woods
wants to be in the military
and that's a lot of reason his game fell off
because his dad was a military dude
and then Tiger Woods kind of fell in love with
the military and then he's kind of devoted a lot of his
attention to that. What? Tiger Woods wants to be in the
military? Yeah if you read the
Tiger Woods' book is fascinating.
The one the caddy wrote about him.
I have got to read that.
He's done Navy SEAL training.
Really?
I'll send you the ESPN article.
It's fascinating.
It's probably part of the reason, like,
has there ever been a golfer so busted up?
I'm always hearing about these injuries,
and this guy, like, still is, like,
isn't he one of the youngest guys on the tour?
And, you know, and he was in 1997.
Still sort of is.
But I heard he was doing, like, mixed martial arts training.
Yeah, because he grew up.
What are you doing?
He grew up hanging out with all of his dad's military friends.
So in all his life, he said if he wasn't in golf, he would have been a Navy SEAL.
And then so now that he got all this money, millions of dollars, he paid them to go and do all of the official Navy SEAL training.
And that took him away from golf.
And then when all the Eland stuff happened, he dived even deeper into that because he's like, oh, my God, my life is falling apart.
I need to find, I need to latch on to something.
So he went even deeper into the Navy SEAL training.
Now, he's always been in unbelievable shape.
Yes.
I almost wonder if that, too, because he's had some serious hip and knee problems, right?
Yeah.
And they don't report golf injuries the way they report NHL injuries, so we don't know
exactly what's wrong, but I wonder if all that training had an effect on his body, because
that is, like, they purposely drown you.
For a couple instances.
John Daly still golfs.
Yeah.
Yeah.
If John Daly is still golfing.
And Tiger Woods' back is broken.
Yeah.
I think there might be an issue there.
Yeah, that's funny.
Can I just tell a little aside from the book?
Please, please.
So he visited one of the Navy SEAL bases, or it might have been an Army base, I'm not sure.
And then a guy had a Callaway driver, and then he's like, hey, Tiger, can you sign my driver?
And Tiger's like, no, I can only sign Nike gear.
It's like part of my deal.
I can only sign anything with Nike.
So the guy says, okay, if I can out-drive you, then you've got to sign my driver.
So then the guy, he steps up, hits the drive, and it's like 400 yards or something.
Tiger goes back, gets his club.
He goes on his knees
Hits the ball
Outdrives him
Come on
Shut up
Yeah that's a story
From the book yeah
Wow
From his knees
He outdrives this dude
Who drove like
It was like 350 or something
Anyways
So yeah
It's a great book
Damn
Wow
I believe it too
Like that's a Bugs Bunny
Story
But I believe it
But it's Tiger Woods
So you believe it
Michael Jordan
His dad was also
A huge baseball fan
Right
So a lot of the reason
That Michael wanted to do baseball
Because of his dad
so same thing with Tiger
and he probably figured
the way Tim Tebow figures
I'm an athlete
I'm strong
I'm fast
I love it
they'll probably let me try it
that's the thing
I'll try it
there's so many people
who are probably better
than Tim Tebow
who are not even getting a sniff
and that's why I think
it makes people mad
it's because Tim
Tim can open those doors
and random
normal people like us
could never
don't hate on him for it
I don't
I don't
you know what
I said
you know
It's professional sports
Why are you hating on P.K. Subban
For
Going after business ventures
Right?
Part of his appeal is his profile
And his flair
Tim Tebow is probably going to help out that minor league team
I don't even know where the Mets minor league team is
It doesn't matter
They're selling out their next game
But it's funny people talk about it as a PR stunt
It's the New York Mets
They get 35,000 people a game
And they're in New York
Probably more.
Probably more?
No, I checked today.
Oh, did you?
Yeah.
Oh, I know my stuff.
They're ninth in the league, which I thought was weird,
but it might be the size of the stadium.
I don't know.
Huh.
Interesting.
More appeal.
It's not like he'll ever wear a Mets uniform.
So that brings me back to my first question,
which is what is, if it's not the Tim Tebow popularity,
if we want to not name it that, what's the Tim Tebow fascination?
Because one of the main things,
one of the first things that Skip Bayless had on his first show with Fox Sports 1,
And by the way, Troy Aikman went in and was like, I love that they're going to have to
work together.
That's going to be hilarious.
But we're reading like sportingnews.com has this like review up and they're like Tony
Romo and the Dallas Cowboys.
Check.
Talked about that.
Tim Debo.
Check.
Check.
LeBron missing, missing the clutch gene.
Check.
Check.
Check.
He went in on LeBron who's gone to seven NBA finals in a row.
Doesn't have the clutch gene.
But anyway, back to Tim Tebow.
Tim Tebow.
A-OK.
Yeah.
Yeah.
what is
even Skip Bayless
is
enthralled by this
we all are
what is it
what is it
this is an
unremarkable
by athletic standards
by the highest end
athletic standards
and I'm not saying
normal people
remarkable
because you make it to
pro in anything
that's remarkable
unremarkable
professional athlete
who had the best
defense in the league
one year
and they
steamrolled
steamrolled
to one game
or two
in the playoffs
I think they lost in the second one
Yeah, because they beat the Steelers
They beat the Steelers in OT
Which freaking killed me
I was like, oh, Steelers are going to freaking walk
They're going to walk all over these guys
Nope
I was like, you've got to be joking me with this Tebow guy
And everybody knew
Anybody that knows anything about football
Knew that coming out of college
Tim Tebow was not going to be a good quarterback
And couldn't understand why Denver drafted him so high
Even though he won the Heisman
The type of offense that they ran
Doesn't work in the NFL
I don't get it
I think it's Wildcat or something
The Wildcats
So what
What is the point
Why do we like him
If you saw him in the gym
You'd be like
Holy smokes
But as an athlete
That doesn't necessarily mean
He's a great athlete
I don't know
I don't know
It's weird to me
That you can be a great
College football player
And there's no
You can't apply it to
The NFL at all
Sometimes you can
But if you look at
Jared Goff
Who was pretty
Pretty damn good
Was he the Heisman Trophy
Winner last year
or was it the other guy?
No, it wasn't.
So, Jared Goff,
who, by the way,
I think St. Louis traded six picks for?
Yeah.
A first, second, and third next year, Steve.
Derek Henry-Ronald.
And a first, second, and third the next year.
They traded for this one guy,
the LA Rams.
And they got him.
And on opening day,
they will have a starter,
a backup,
and a backup to the backup.
None of those guys will be Jared Goff,
who they traded for.
And if the quarterback goes down
and the backup quarterback goes down,
guess who their quarterback is?
Not him.
The punter.
No.
That's their backup.
That's their backup to the backup.
That's a real thing.
And they're not,
and the coach is like,
I think he had a great camp.
We're really excited about his progress.
He's going to be a great player in this league.
So what you're saying is
the Tebow story is not even
the most ridiculous thing
in professional sports?
No, the Adam LaRoche
is still the most ridiculous story
in professional sports.
I think there's quite a bit going on.
With a kid in the dressing room.
Come on.
College football just doesn't
translate over to the NHL.
They don't play the NHL
NFL
It definitely doesn't translate
To the NHL
They don't play the same systems
In terms of just formations
Of their teams
It's not the same
It's weird
Yeah
So the World Cup
That was really good
Yeah
It's funny
I want to actually play
For you guys
Somebody sent me this
On Twitter
And it's the actual anthem
That Team Some of Europe
Will play
So you guys ready to hear it?
This is good
Hang on
Let me just
Cue it up here
I'm excited for this
I'm a Barbie girl
in a Barbie world
I don't know why it's not playing
hang on
hang on
it's just all the anthems
put together
you know what it sounds like
a little bit
what what what
oh my god
you gotta turn that down
that um
That like panic music they play
In every movie trailer
Like for kids
Or the band
Like an orchestra before the actual
Before the actual concert starts
So yeah that's all the European songs
From the seven countries combined into one
So supposedly
Thank you Jake for that
What has actually happened by the way
Because it would be amazing if they really did that
But supposedly what has happened
Is they had an instrumental
No words
That they were going to play
For Team Europe
Team Europe's leadership
Turned it down
They shot it down
And they're not going to play
Anything
So if they play Canada
It'll be oh Canada
And nothing else
Team North America
They're like okay
So what are they going to do
They saw this
And now they're not going to have anything
I thought they were going to play
Both the Canadian and the American
Oh that's right
They were going to have both
And now they're having nothing
Oh wow
That was the last I read
Honestly
Who knows
this is the time
where you have
Yas from
Nicki Minaj
so
what if they play Canada
would you play
Oh Canada
then Star Spangled Banner
then Oh Canada
then Star Spangled Banner
again
cause you gotta play both
for North America
oh okay
there you go
why not
why not
play Sweden's anthem too
just you know
climbing it up
just to have five
it's gonna be a lot of fun
this tournament
and it's funny
We just demoed NHL 17.
Yes.
And not only did Steve curb stomp me.
Oh, just did.
It was pretty bad.
But they actually went into some of the things that this game is going to have.
And it's one of those years where it's a big leap forward.
Because there's a lot more that's been added in.
And we should get into it now.
Because there's probably a lot to talk about on it.
Can I just say that I love how we talked about anthems and didn't mention Colin Kaepernick.
But that's cool
Oh wow
Or John Tortorella at all
Or Tortorella
Do we do that?
Do we want to talk about Tortorella?
We can go to
I don't know
What do you want to say about Torts?
How do you feel?
I can't remember the name
Of the reporter who asked him
I kind of hate the reporter
Who asked him
Like I just
Did anyone think
He had a different opinion
Other than the one he said?
Did anyone?
And it's not his fault
He was asked
And he answered
In a John Tortorella way
But now
We're talking about it
Now we're talking about
An obvious thing
And now we gotta ask Seth Jones about it
And people were getting on Greg Wyshynski
Because Seth Jones
I think he basically said he had no problem
With what Tortorella said
People were getting on Wyshynski
For saying that Jones
Like of course he said that
But of course he said that
Tortorella's his coach
For games and practices
For the next year at least
For the next life
well yeah
until Tortorella gets fired
so December
yeah
this is what I'm saying
I think it's going to be
a rough year for Tortorella
I'm not going to lie
this is what I'm saying
I think
here's what it is
this A
distracts from how
terribly constructed
TMUSA is
which is great for them
B
I think
Torts is not long
for this world
and that team
is not long for this world
the only person
probably still left
on the Blue Jackets
if they have their way
by the end of this year
will be Seth Jones
Let me throw a little
I might live to eat those words by the way
I'm sure that will be quoted back to me as they make the playoffs
It was a very confident statement
Here, I'll save you
Maybe it's to Tortorella's benefit
That Team USA on paper kind of sucks
Because no one is expecting anything from them
And if they go far
Maybe even win the thing
We're all of a sudden talking about Tortorella
Like he's a Jack Adams candidate again
Because he took this scruffy group of grinders
And he beat Team Canada
And he beat Team Sweden and Russia
You know how we always talk about
The effect that 93 Toronto Maple Leafs
Had on the city of Toronto
That this lunch pail
Hard hat boot wearing
Team
Tell you what team that worked real hard
And put their shovels in the ground
And pushed heavy things
Or whatever else
Whatever stupid analogy you want to use
Pushed heavy things
I don't know, dug things out of the ground, whatever it was that you wanted to say.
The effect that had on Leaf fans was sort of devastating,
because Leaf fans from then on fell in love with the anti-heroes.
They fell in love with the guys who went out on the ice and worked hard and didn't score any points.
Across all sports.
Across all sports.
Yeah!
Why is baseball player?
Couldn't say enough great things about Clark, Gilmore, Tucker, Roberts.
Sundin
nothing
screw Sundin
nothing
he's European
and that Kenny Johnson kid
get Wendell Clark back
McGill
yeah
who the hell is that
is he going to go on to
get Wendell Clark back
you know what I mean
he's going to go on to
anchor the Islanders
power play for the next
six years
you gave us a sweet hero
here we'll give you a sweet
we'll give you a sweet back
we'll give you a sweet back
oh it's painful
and we'll give you
Luongo and Niedermeyer too
so you know
I think
I wonder if
And this is a very far-stretching, reaching statement, okay?
So just bear with me on this one.
This one is a real stretch.
But do you think the Miracle on Ice team had an effect on USA Hockey?
Because every single time I see USA Hockey assembled,
with the exception of the Vancouver Olympics,
where they were phenomenal, great, great team.
Every time I see them assembled, A, they underperform,
or B, it's like scrappy, scrappy USA.
Scrappy, oh, and here comes Scrappy Little USA.
Only 330 million of them.
Are you telling me, are you telling me that they really put this team together
and they really thought it was the best team?
I don't think so.
To me, it feels like, it's like, no, we want to be the underdog in a way.
We want to be the scrappy guys.
And then it's almost like they're looking at the World Cup of Hockey
like it's a playoff series.
It kind of is, though.
There's only eight teams.
Right, but all of them are different teams, so it's not.
But it's like it's starting at the same time.
It's a series of one gamers.
It's a series of one gamers.
So anyone can win, man.
Anyone can win.
And you know what?
Their goalies are great.
If you grind your opponent down and they have great goaltending.
Goaltending's amazing.
I don't know.
I just wonder if it's like if they're not that they would intentionally pick a team
because I wouldn't be that ludicrous, but it almost is like it's like they look at it
like it's like they look at it like, well, let's let's pick the let's pick the tough
guys, because that's how we won the last
big one. You know? I don't know.
I don't know.
And again, please don't get mad at me
because Pavelski and all the other rest of those guys are great
players. I'm not saying that. They need to get a
Mike Richter-like performance out of
whoever their starting goalie is.
Is my point. Jesse,
you brought up the anthem thing. What do you
think? The torts thing
or the Kaepernick thing?
Let's go with torts right now. We're talking about
torts, and then we've got to go to break, and then we'll come back with Kaepernick.
Sure.
I think I side with you where no one should have asked
John Tortorella what he thinks.
Why? Because, what do you expect?
He said what we expected
John Tortorella to do.
So, Torts is who we think he is?
Exactly.
But he's not being let off the hook. Wow.
Because people continue to write about it. Right.
But he's a man. He's 40.
He's not a kid.
Do you think he reads the newspaper?
Probably not.
Because it's garbage.
and they need to get
their facts straight.
Know the facts.
All right.
All right.
That's an interesting
I do want to
we should tackle Kaepernick.
We should talk about it
and we will talk about it
when we come back
on Sportsnet 590 The Fan.
It is the Steve Dangle podcast.
So we're talking about
obviously Tortorella's comments
which have been beaten to death
and we have been talking
and we were going to transition
into Kaepernick
but before we do go
here's the thing.
the thing that gets me about this whole thing
and this is what's been tweeted at me
because obviously I disagree with John Tortorella
do you get tweets?
I do get tweets from time to time
and here's the thing
John Tortorella is wrong
period
end of story, he's wrong
should he be stripped of his title
as coach of Team USA
I mean
it's his right to have an opinion
so probably not
I questioned him being selected as the head coach
just based on his merits.
Period.
Not on his opinion.
Beyond that,
what kills me in all this
is the people that are tweeting me going,
well, if you're so upset with the USA,
why would you go represent your country
if you're so mad at it?
Why would you put on your country's colors
if you're not willing to stand for the national anthem?
And to that I say this.
The two are not linked.
I can be extremely pissed off
With what is happening here in Canada
Many times I have been
I'm really mad right now at the city of Toronto
You should have heard Adam scream at the traffic
On the way here
And the social issues here
While not as pronounced
Still exist
And we have a huge problem with
And if you go into it
Huge problem with the way we've treated our native population
It's embarrassing
It's painful
What drives me insane
is these people that say,
well, if you're mad at your country,
why would you represent them?
Well, it's still my country
and I still love my country.
I just don't think my country
is being the best country
it could be right now.
It's like having a kid.
You still love your kids.
It's like having a dog.
Still love your dog.
You're not going to abandon your dog
because your dog is bad
and not acting the way it should.
You're not going to abandon your country
because your country is not acting
the way it should.
These people that say
Colin Kaepernick should leave.
If he's, find a country, Donald Trump,
Final country that works better for him
That is not what it's about
Can you do that Don?
Can you please do that Don?
That's not what it's about
The point is you can be mad at something
And still go and be a part of it
And be proud of it
It's a complicated issue but it's true
Are you upset at the problems in El Salvador?
You know what?
I'm not educated on the problems in El Salvador
Yeah because you care about the problems in Canada
Because you live here and you're from here
Right
Maybe if you were from El Salvador
or you would care and be upset at it
when it did something wrong.
But you're not from there,
so you don't care about it.
It's hard to care about that many things.
So you care about the problems in Canada
and you're upset about it
because you're from here.
Yeah.
Exactly.
I don't get it.
No, I see what you're doing.
So what do you think about Kaepernick, Jesse?
I think that he's brave
for doing what he's doing
because he makes millions of dollars
and he might cost himself
those millions of dollars your contract in the nfl isn't guaranteed they could have cut him a
long time ago if they didn't want to deal with this so and by the way he's not he wasn't even
he's not even their starter quarterback right now he's the backup yeah and then um people are
talking about it so he clearly did something that effect that's trying to affect change who knows if
anything's going to come of it but he follows along the lines of athletes who have stood up
for things like muhammad ali who just passed away he's trying to lump himself in that group and
good on him for doing that one and what is what has been interesting to me is how many people
i mean it's been going around twitter and it's the easy thing to say but how many people were like
rest in peace muhammad ali did so many great things with his life he was bigger than just
boxing and then screw calling gabbard for doing the exact same thing is that just the rule like
if you do if you stand up for something it takes 30 years for it to be appreciated
Yeah, it's like art.
Right?
Art, like most artists aren't appreciated until they're dead.
Well, there it is.
The thing that gets me, and I think, actually, I got this from The Daily Show.
But Trevor Noah came on and he said, listen, it's okay to be pro-black and pro-police.
We all should be pro-black and pro-everything.
Pro-race, like race exclusion, I'm sorry, inclusion, not exclusion.
Adam's not good with the words.
Yeah, I'm not.
And pro-police.
This is not what this is about.
This is about changing societal norms.
To me, I don't see it as a police versus anyone issue.
Because 99% of the police are amazing.
It's the freaking idiots that you got to get rid of.
Just like 99% of any particular group of people that you pick out are great.
It's the idiots that you have to stop.
The fascinating thing, and we talked about this in the car on the way here,
Colin Kaepernick's not the only person who's done this.
right no so one of his teammates joined him what's his name don't know anyone know someone
on the seahawks did it what's his name no idea anyone know uh there was a women's soccer player
who did it you know her name i don't i think it was megan rapinoe i you think i think right
um and only because there was a follow-up to that and uh i want to say there was another
we don't know the other people who have done it because the people both the people who are angry
and the people who are happy with them because jersey sales have gone up are fascinated with
this one guy like the gesture is almost the the gesture is almost secondary the stance
the protest is almost secondary and what is now third is why he was doing it in the freaking
first place yeah it's the last part of the equation that we're talking about it's uh it's
all a mess i don't know how it ends it gets me so mad that that um people's instant reaction
rather than to go what is this person's experience what is this person's um
why why do they feel this way their instant reaction is to react
and react negatively because and and not only that and i i get an instant reaction that's
negative sometimes i hear things that i don't want to hear and then i realize later you know
what i shouldn't react like that and i i reacted in anger and you know what you were right to say
that and i'm sorry that i reacted negatively to that and i should have listened it's it's this
hard stance i'm going to react negatively and because i reacted negatively even when i'm wrong
and I'm going to stick to it.
I'm going to give you all great life advice
that I need to learn to follow myself
on a consistent basis.
Give it a sec, comma,
think, sorry, give it a sec, comma,
tweet less.
Tweet less.
Give it a sec.
Don't tweet as much.
And if you're really, really not sure about it,
sleep on it.
Yeah.
Never lob a grenade from bed.
No, good point.
Good point.
Now, if you really want somebody who can articulate this perfectly
in only the way this person can,
listen to what Bill Burr had to say about this whole issue, I think.
I thought he was pretty freaking brilliant.
In the everyman way that he does it.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I think history is going to look back on Colin Kaepernick
and realize how important what he did is.
Because if you think about what's happening right now,
we're in the middle of an election season,
and he's doing all this.
And we're a hockey podcast in Toronto, and we're talking about it.
Yeah.
And he got Obama to address it not once, but twice.
Because he had to.
Dude, you know what I was thinking, actually, before Obama addressed it?
I'm like, oh my God, they're going to bring this up at the debate.
They're going to bring this up at the presidential debate.
What an NFL backup quarterback did.
Yeah.
Guaranteed, they're going to go,
Ms. Clinton, or Secretary, is she a secretary?
Secretary Clinton, what do you think about the Colin Kaepernick thing?
Well thank you for your question
And it's your right
As an American to ask it
Candidate Trump
What do you think
Listen
Here's the thing
I'm gonna make my stupid
Little fish face
About it
And my goofy little
Hand gestures
Oh my god
Would I have taken
That guy's lunch money
Your impression is
Pretty freaking good man
We finally found
Steve's new impression
The hand gestures
Can you
Can you please do me a favor
Let's give him a mammogram
Every time he talks
Can you
Please
He's a foot away from the presidency!
Please, when you do your LFR videos,
when the Leafs lose,
please have,
what does Donald Trump think about this game?
Because I think
that is a really
great impression, man.
You've got to watch the YouTube version of this. That was great.
Alright, so the Leafs are in last place.
Alright? But they're a great team.
Great team. You're going to love them.
They've been a great team since,
I don't even know, some of my best friends
played for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Some of my best friends are Leafs fans.
They deserve more, but they're going to give more.
You know what I'm saying?
What?
What did you just say, you crazy quack?
Sorry.
By the way, Donald Trump tweeted something.
Every sentence.
I love Twitter.
I send tweets all the time.
I tweet about the Leafs.
The Leafs are beautiful.
They're great people.
They're great people.
They're great people.
Beautiful people.
Wonderful.
Alright, so here's what Donald Trump actually tweeted
Once
This is from April 3rd, 2013
I feel like Donald Trump might be the Tim Tebow of politics
You just can't look away
And for no reason at all
This had no reason at all
Remember, he was not running for president at this point
He just one day picked up his phone and said
This is what I'm going to tweet, and I quote
I got something
I played football and baseball
Sorry
But I was said to be the best baseball player in New York State
Asked coach Ted Tobias
Said I was the best he ever coached
Just a random tweet on an April morning
April 9th
9.51am
He's having his coffee
He's like you know what
Sorry everybody
I was one of the best
No the best
The best
I'm sorry
The best
Bullying's wrong
Bullying's wrong
You shouldn't bully
but there's something
so cleansing
about a punch in the nose
yeah
and this guy never got one
no
never once
he didn't
he didn't
holy smokes
yeah
how do you say that
and mean it
this guy's doctor
said he was the most
healthy presidential
candidate in history
and then the doctors
and then they went
into the doctor's credentials
and they're all super dubious
and he still uses
Windows XP
oh my god
Donald Trump
uses Windows XP
oh
I love when people
pick out small details
like that's the best
alright now I'm gonna
go into my
classified documents
are you kidding me
that was the only
takeaway that the
internet had
from the picture
of his doctor
on the computer
it was Windows XP
that and he looked
like the dude
from the Big Lebowski
he's probably still
got the DVD
of those two people
from Friends
who did the
Windows 95 walkthrough
I think it was
Jennifer Aniston
and Matthew Perry
did an actual
one hour DVD video
on how to use
Windows 95.
The 90s were a weird time.
It was a weird time.
I don't care for friends.
Me neither.
Let's completely switch gears
and let's talk about
NHL 17, the game.
Because we did.
We just said we were going to do it.
Let's talk about it.
First off,
all the World Cup players
including the ones
not in the NHLPA
and all the jerseys
are included
just in case you're wondering.
Very cool.
I'm surprised
they were able to get that done.
Me too.
There's a surprising amount of
ticker tape
or whatever
red tape
to get through
for that sort of thing
it's the reason why
they've never had
the proper
Team Canada
or Team USA jerseys
when you try to play
as Team Canada
you know
internationally
in the game
but
they got all the
World Cup jerseys
like you said
and I don't know
who the
KHL players are
or whatever players are
I'm trying to think
I guess Kovalchuk
will be in the game
so there will be
a few guys
Datsuk
He's not on an NHL team.
But there's never a KHL in the game, right?
No, and that's a KHL licensing thing.
So I wonder if, like, guys,
will the World Cup be the only place now
that you can play Kovalchuk and Detsuk?
Yes.
So you can't?
No.
Can you get them in other modes?
Yeah, if they're on a roster in the game,
you can take them from there and put them in wherever.
But they probably won't be if they're in the KHL, right?
They probably would have been on Team Russia anyway.
Oh.
So you can take them off Team Russia if you want,
And before you start, you're like, be a GM and put them on the Leafs if you want.
Point being, there's a World Cup mode.
Well, Datsuk and Kovalchuk are joining my Toronto Maple Leafs this year.
No, it seems, what's amazing about this game, to me, is the franchise mode.
Like, I know everybody's talking about the online stuff, and we'll get to that, and it's super cool.
But the fact that you not only have to be the GM, but you have to be a player,
and you have to be the president
and you have to be the guy
that sets ticket prices
and concessions.
Hot dog prices.
Yeah, like,
everything.
The color of the seats.
It's amazing.
Yeah, you get to control
a crazy, crazy amount.
And franchise mode,
well, be a GM
or whatever it was,
was what I grew up with.
It's how I fell in love
with all the NHL games.
Now I almost feel like
there's too much.
There's too much.
I'm not going to dedicate
all that time.
Yeah, because it's a lot of time.
It would take a couple hours
to set your ticket prices?
Like, imagine I have a great record
and I make great trades
and my team does really well
and we win the Stanley Cup,
but I have a poor ranking
because I didn't change the hot dog price.
Like, I didn't take the half hour
to go through all the minutia.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
That would drive me insane.
And it did drive me insane
the couple times I tried it
when they started getting more and more.
Like, why are my fans so unhappy?
I just won three straight cups.
Well, it's because you didn't give them
a free t-shirt night, you jackass.
Well, now there's a free t-shirt night that I can do and a bobblehead night.
Yeah.
It's amazing.
And it's really cool.
Now, let's talk about what everybody wants to know, which is the online stuff.
I thought you were going to say how Steve kicked your butt.
Well, that will be in the video.
Four to nothing.
I was the Sharks.
He was the Oilers.
Yeah, well, that might be part of it.
Kim Talbot did not do a Ben Scriven's impression that night.
Actually, Kim Talbot was quite good.
Letting four goals.
Okay.
28 shots?
Actually, yeah, that's right.
That's all it was, 28 shots.
I did hold you to 28 shots, which is better than I thought.
I actually thought it was going to be way worse.
I was just basically, my defensive plan was to throw electronic bodies
in front of Steve's players.
Just make sure you got in front of the shot.
And so I blocked a bunch of shots, but that was about it.
That's all I could do.
First minute, I was like, this is going to be great.
Second minute, I'm like, uh-oh, Adam's bringing it.
Adam's bringing it.
No, I suck.
Um, but, so what, what did, for you, Steve, who plays online all the time, got all the
way to Div 7, uh, Div 3, and before losing like 12 straight games, what, um, what do
you like about the new online structure?
Because there's some new stuff.
There is some new stuff.
Um, I like what they're doing with drop-ins for EASHL.
So basically, for those of you not familiar with the game, you can be one individual player
and you go online and everyone is their own individual player.
So you can be either of the wings, center, either of the D, or a goalie.
You can have up to 12 people in a game.
Wow.
Now, you can join a league, and you can play with all your friends and have your own team,
which I think you were able to do before.
But I never did it because, one, every time I posted online about a team, it would fill up.
And it's not like those people are online all the time.
So there's like some organization to it, right?
Yeah.
You got to actually like...
Pick a night.
Yeah, pick a night, text your friends, or send a message to your friends,
hey, are we playing now or what?
So I didn't have patience for any of that.
So what I did was drop-ins.
The problem is you're playing against strangers, and strangers are lunatics.
So what they're doing is, maybe you can explain it a little bit better than me,
but it's basically you play against some people in a drop-in game,
it goes well, you all get along, so they're more likely to pop up again
if you guys are looking for drop-ins together.
you're less likely to encounter a jerk who just plays their music into their headphones into their
headset just to be a jerk does this happen to you all the time that's amazing i think they do that
just to screw you up oh yeah totally absolutely and so i just turn my headset off and go mute
or or you know your teammate who gives you nothing but grief the other night my goalie the goalies
always wear a headset because goalies always have something to say and he was chirping my defensive
abilities we were down two nothing at the time and he felt kind of sad about it kind of angry about
it maybe you should have stopped the puck there last line of defense anyway I score the 4-4 tying
goal and assist on the 5-4 game winning goal and you know what at the end of the game he took the
high road and said you know what yellow you really improved that was really good good team win guys
And my response was, I would just like to talk about how good I am at this game.
Holy smokes, am I good.
Scored the game-tying goal, assisted on the game-winning goal.
What would you guys do without me?
Did you actually say that?
A hundred percent.
I plugged my headset back in to chirp this man.
What was their response?
I wasn't listening.
I could hear them trying to talk, like, oh, okay, okay.
And I'm like, oh, I'm the MVP, I'm the best.
Adam, when you're a winner, you don't have to listen.
Steve, how old are you?
28
Just checking
And you know
When Steve has kids
His baby will sit next to him
On the couch
As he does all of these same things
Nothing will change
People are looking for
If you're looking for adulthood
From the three of us
It's not happening
But I mean
I don't think it's too much
Of a stretch to think
That Steve will be
On the couch
And his kid will join him
One day
Playing online
And calling people up
Steve's child
Will never win a game
Of anything
Oh I'm gonna dunk
On that kid
You'll be the one swatting away shots when he's like 11 trying to play basketball.
I'll give that kid his allowance, his or her allowance,
when he or she can cross the blue line.
I'm just going to...
Elbows to the neck every time they try to enter the offensive zone.
So anyway, it sounds like they will make it easier to avoid lunatics like myself or others.
So I would be less likely to be in a game with that goalie again
or with someone who scores on his own net on purpose like a sociopath.
Do people do that?
All the time.
There was one guy, and I know it was one guy
because I got put into three or four games with this guy.
So this guy would take on different personas every week.
Can you not block these people so you don't drop in with them?
I don't know.
I don't want to take the time to even block them.
I'm just trying to play my stupid hockey game, okay?
But this one guy, what he would do, this jerk,
is sometimes he would take on a persona,
Sometimes he wouldn't say anything
And he would just be quiet
So that you didn't suspect anything
Then the center would win the faceoff back to him
This could be multiple people by the way
No, no, same name
No, it was the same name
Same username every time
Center would win the puck back to this defender
He would always be my defense partner too
He would take the puck back to our goalie
Pass it into the net
And then literally
and freak out and the entire team would just be like you idiot and just quit and the guy like
bragged oh yeah i've done this 800 900 times something like that you know why because all
his games are 30 seconds long because everybody quit yes yeah so the new online modes will help
you enjoy the game, which is as good as it's
ever been. The gameplay is as good as
it's ever been, but what screws it up
is how the people use
the modes. Right, and by the way, the
puck is far more alive than it ever
has been, and goalies have
completely changed the way
goalies stand, and the physics of the puck
has changed, and so they're getting rebounds
that they've never seen before. So, supposedly
that was by accident. They didn't actually
make the puck more lively, which is
what I kept saying during the video that I'll eventually
upload. It's
the way the puck is hitting the goalie
now. So, if you're a defender
again, like me, and you just throw
a shot at the net, the goalie isn't going to just
automatically absorb it now. Right.
They might have to bat it down.
What was the Leafs' old goalie coach?
Because they worked with... Frankie.
Oh, Francois Allaire. They worked with
Eddie Lack to create a whole bunch of new motions
for the goaltenders. So, he's doing
all these moves you've never seen in an NHL
game before, so the puck's bouncing all these different ways.
It's a little ironic, though, that a goalie
helped out in depth with the NHL
games and accidentally made all
the goalies worse.
That's not true. He didn't make them worse. He actually
made them much better, but
he did create new ways
to stop the puck
and new ways to score, which
to me just makes it more authentic.
I was
saying to Sean Ramjack, saying the guy
who, he's the producer of the game,
where do you go? Where do you go from here?
He's already working on NHL 18.
I'm like, what's left?
They are now working on net front battles as well,
which is something that the game has been sorely missing, I think.
It's one of those things where I've been a fan of the NHL games all my life
and I've always had something to say,
and now I'm like, I have no notes.
I have no notes.
There's nothing else I want in this game.
I'd like the Olympics if they could ever work that out.
Okay, there's the one thing.
That's the IOC.
Yeah, and that's not even their fault.
No, it's the IOC.
That's not their problem, right?
Hey, we got to go on the radio portion.
This show is brought to you by Panago Pizza.
It's what's on the inside that counts.
On the offline portion, I have a surprise of all surprises.
Something that absolutely shocked me yesterday
that I think is going to blow everyone's collective mind
and it's about this show.
And I don't think anybody knows this, but it is crazy.
Do I know it?
No, you don't.
And I will tell you after that.
Plus, we're going to do a quick press conference too.
So
Have you ever thought about
The legacy of this podcast
The legacy
I'm not sure
No because I've never thought of the end of it
Cultural relevance then
Legacy may be the wrong word
Cultural relevance
Because I really haven't
I haven't thought legacy
I haven't thought cultural relevance
Which is why this thing
That I'm about to blow your mind with
Jesse knows
Sorry I realized what he was talking about
This is always
Is this not the coolest, Jesse?
This is pretty cool.
So everyone on the YouTube portion,
you're now taking part in a terrifying moment in my life,
which is when Adam and Jesse both look at me.
What's happening?
What do you think?
I don't know.
I have no idea.
Well, I'm going to blow your mind with this.
Okay.
The Steve Dangle podcast is now officially a part of a university course.
What?
Yeah, clap away.
We are now source material
on a course at Ryerson University.
Get the fuck...
We're on the online course.
Hey, Ryerson students, when you're online, you can say
fuck.
They have to listen to our show
and they have to
analyze what works about it and what doesn't.
So we are part of their course material.
I'd like those notes, please.
I don't care.
I'm just interested in what they have to say.
How big of a font are you allowed to write
Steve interrupts them too much
I don't know
Probably 72
Someone's name is on this show
You can interrupt as much as you want
Emperor Steve
That should be a shirt
Emperor Steve
My butler says I'm very down to earth
So isn't that neat
That's incredible
What course
Who teaches it
I assume it's sports broadcasting
You know what
Well that's a program
No this is actually
this is not a sports
broadcasting course
this is just a podcast course
well
within
yeah
no not within sports
well within the
like media hub now
right
but they have a sports
broadcasting program
and they have a
I guess a media program
yeah and they take your
classes within that
so
yeah
congratulations fellas
we're now part of a
university course
I didn't even make it
through university
if you're part of this
course please tweet at us
I assume that's what happened
well actually I know
somebody who's in the course
who if we didn't run
out of time today
we would have called her
She's the one that alerted me to it
So we're going to talk to her
And see what she thinks
But I think it's hilarious that
If Ryerson students
If they are listening to this
They would listen to this episode too
So we got the alert on time
That's got to be creepy
I hope you're not baked
It's weird
I hope you are
Because we're talking to you
Like literally
Right now
You
Everything is good about this show
Let's do the press conference
The Presser SDP
The Steve Dangle Press Conference
This question comes from
Sarah Louise
Oh great
Never heard of her
Ask Steve
About the completely
Believable story he told
So he could sneak out
And buy his card
So
Hold on
Back story here is
Mrs. Dangle finally got
Her anniversary card
Yes
Which is really all she wanted
For her anniversary
All she wanted was a card
Finally gave it to her
So we were coming home
from the gym
and we were about
to go out to dinner.
Aw, a couple gym time.
Aw.
Hey, we're a fit fam.
Do you guys wear
the same outfits?
Do you guys match?
Sort of.
Yeah, we usually wear
like all the time.
She probably doesn't have
any Hockey Canada gear.
Hey, hey.
She's fresh out of
Hockey Canada gym shorts.
I don't wear those
to the gym.
I wear my
also free Nike shirts.
My also free Nike spandex.
Yeah, that you won't
wear out now
because you've worn them out.
But still have them
for the gym.
Anyway, you were saying.
Yeah, thank you, Adam.
Thank you, Adam.
We're running out of time,
so I want to get this out.
Adam makes fun
of his friends too much.
Add that to that.
So we're coming home
from the gym.
We're about to go out
to dinner.
So I start
maniacally just going,
oh, no.
I think I left
something at the park
because I took Iggy
for a walk to the park
where there's a
Pokemon gym
earlier in the day.
And I was like,
oh, I left something at the park.
And she goes, what?
And I go, I don't know.
I just have a feeling.
I left something at the park.
And the thing about me is I lose shit all the time.
And so she's like, oh, well, okay,
we'll go look for it on the way to dinner.
I'm like, no, no, no.
You have a shower.
And while you're in the shower,
I'll go to the park and look for it.
And she's just like, oh, all right.
Just so mad that I would lose something
and potentially make us late for our reservations.
So I went down to Adam's old stomping grounds,
go to a shopper's drug mart,
bought a card and an envelope.
Sorry, me and Drake.
Me and Drake.
Oh, that's right.
You started from the bottom.
Now you're doing the shitty podcast.
Out of the Scarborough Mines.
From the Scarborough Mines to here.
Yes, yes, yes.
The Scarborough Mines like Zoolander.
Went to a shopper's drug mart,
bought a card and envelope and a marker.
Wrote her a very sweet and thoughtful...
And a marker.
And a marker.
Did you use pink or purple?
Are you sure it wasn't a crayon?
I wanted to use red.
did you spell the e backwards she would have appreciated that okay we do cutesy
wootsy things like that because we're a very fun loving couple jesse lots of fun okay and uh i uh
hid the card in my shirt and after we had ordered our meals i presented her with the card and she
loved it now she did and i think that's really sweet of you so congratulations congratulations
steve you made it right that's good here's my thing i love that she believed you when you said
oh i lost i can't even remember yeah well by her tweet it sounds like she didn't believe you
because she's a completely believable story that steve no i think she's being serious because
she's see it's interesting that you interpreted that way jesse because either way she's insulting
me if you go by the way jesse said she's saying that my my ruse was shitty yeah if you go by
her actually meaning it she believes that i'm that much of an idiot
not only would i forget something but i would forget what it was that i forgot
so either way i'm stupid but uh got her a card and uh inside i believe i wrote uh to the most
tolerant wife in the world, may I be the most
tolerant man you ever marry.
Or tolerable man
you ever marry. Oh, okay.
Tolerant wouldn't make any sense. To the most tolerant
wife in the world, may I be the most tolerable man
you ever marry. Can you guys quickly give advice
to Clayman, who's going on his first
date this week? Oh, damn. Okay,
we got two minutes to do this. Let's go. Okay, okay.
Don't fuck it up.
Just be yourself. You don't have to.
If it's your first date, you don't have to talk about your exes. Never talk
about your ex on the first date. What if, like, being
yourself what if you suck then it wasn't meant to be because so many people go oh well what if being
myself isn't good enough okay well the other option is you say all this other stuff and you
pretend to be this person and now you got to pretend to be that person forever and the thing
is you slowly turn into the person you actually are you're not compatible with the person that
you're talking to and you end up hating each other or they certainly end up hating you here's the key
be yourself it's okay if they don't like you oh it's not the end of what is for you will not go
by you. Put it that way.
Who said that? Huh? Is that
not a mild quote? Sure.
No, it used to be something my parents used to say.
You sound like a wise aunt. Napoleon Dynamite
quote. Auntie Wilde
wants to tell you, listen, the deal
is, be yourself. Don't be a
jackass. Save the jackassery
for later on in the relationship, because
we all are. But just
be a kind, polite person.
Listen to them. Look them in the eye.
Actually listen to them. Actually
listen to them, and you'll be fine.
Whenever someone goes on a date
Well, I didn't do much dating
But this has been my observation
Everyone worries about their answers
Focus more on your questions
Let them talk
Ask them about themselves
Steve's right, Steve's had two girlfriends
But Steve has been quite successful with the second one
I would say
Mediocre at best
She sends shitty tweets
Thanks so much for listening
We are going to come back next week
And we'll have an announcement then
About when we're going to two episodes
We've also got some big stuff in the wings.
Oh, holy shit, do we have big things.
But that's all that we can say right now.
So this is a little teaser before it gets crazy.
And by the way, we're getting crazy early this year because of the World Cup.
Crazy.
Thumbs up.
Love you.
See you, Mo.
