Starting point is 00:00:00 Panago Pizza presents S.C.P. The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle and Adam Wilde. Hey, I know we're a hockey podcast, but welcome back Monday Night Football. Yes. I'm not even going to applaud that. Yes. I'm not going to applaud that. And by the way, the Steelers dominating the team that shall not be named because it's racist. The Seahawks. Right
Starting point is 00:00:31 There's another one? There's another one Yeah And you know what's great about it Is they burned This team from Washington Burned a terrible towel Before the game
Starting point is 00:00:40 Why would they do that? As a rally Well Exactly And then they got stomped How could they? Well and There's karma
Starting point is 00:00:46 Yeah There's towel karma And of course After that game happened The LA Rams Played their first game Since 1994 Which I bet St. Louis
Starting point is 00:00:57 All of St. Louis hated Well you see Los Angeles there they had a football game lots of things they had the pigskin
Starting point is 00:01:08 getting tossed around first down second down third down maybe even a fourth on occasion yeah it's not the Canadian game it's the American game
Starting point is 00:01:17 touchdowns field goals I don't know if anyone went for two but I mean you don't take it off the table yeah
Starting point is 00:01:26 not like st louis though they're they're down to i guess just the blues and the cardinals i think now i'm glad we waited for that aren't you glad we waited for that jesse well it's funny because things have not gone well for the rams since moving to la uh i mean obviously they're going to make it's not a very long time well it's been a bad time uh they're going to make a Roman Empire treasure trove full of cash. But the team's going to be terrible. They're the Leafs.
Starting point is 00:02:03 They're worse, I think, than the Leafs have ever been. And I say that after the last two. They're so bad. Adam, where did the Leafs finish in the standings? They finished dead last, but I think the Rams literally couldn't be worse. Hold on. They had 69 points though, which is nice. Hold on.
Starting point is 00:02:18 What if the Leafs drafted Austin Matthews and Austin Matthews was so bad that he didn't even dress opening night? I would probably... I don't know what I would do. Jesse, can you look up the particulars of the Jared Goff
Starting point is 00:02:36 trade for me, please? Oh, you were trying to explain this to me. Didn't they make a movie about how ridiculous NFL... Yeah, it's called Draft Day. And it's with Kevin Costner. And his wife is randomly Ben Affleck's wife.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Jennifer Garner. And she's pregnant. And that adds a whole new level of drama As if draft day wasn't enough drama Somebody's pregnant and they shouldn't be Is it based on a draft that actually happened? No, no And it's hilarious Because he's the GM of the Cleveland Browns
Starting point is 00:03:08 And the Browns do well at the draft Which, oh come on, really? That was like Moneyball So the great thing about Moneyball Is it's actually based on real life But because my baseball knowledge is not very good Especially outside of the Blue Jays going back I was enthralled because I didn't know what was going to happen next
Starting point is 00:03:30 And at the very end they're like Well we'd like to give you an offer to join the Boston Red Sox And I'm like oh and then they won the World Series next year And then he turns it down and I'm like what? Yeah and he could have made 12 million bucks a year too The end of the movie is he makes one of the worst decisions of all time Yep I was so invested in this guy
Starting point is 00:03:49 He could have been drinking coffee with Theo Epstein in that little box all year long No, but no, he's back in Oakland. No! No! Back in cool old Oakland. Have you got the, have you pulled it up yet? I can't find which picks they were exactly. I just want to get that.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Okay, all right. They made a blunder. So here's the deal. Derek Goff is a guy who did quite well in his college career. Okay? Tim Tebow. But all major central scouting reports had him pegged as okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Just okay? Yeah, just okay, I would say. And what's hilarious about this is that the L.A. franchise didn't have to draft him. They didn't have to go after him. They didn't even have the first overall pick. But they traded a bunch of picks, and I'll tell you what those picks were. To move up, I think, four or five spaces. Not much.
Starting point is 00:04:39 I think you've told me before. I can't remember offhand. Jesse is still furiously looking. How is this hard to find? This is crazy. It won't come up in Google. You know what? That's how you know it's a bad trade.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Also no one cares about the NFL draft So Steve What? Last night There we go The Los Angeles Hold on yeah hang on to that The Los Angeles Rams last night
Starting point is 00:05:01 Went into their first game And won And lost big And not only lost big Lost boring Lost big and boring? That's how you know you got stomped Is when the 49ers come in and you lost boring
Starting point is 00:05:15 So it didn't even have the charm of a 9-2 loss to Nashville? No, 22 years, and it wasn't even interesting. Now, here's the thing. The starting quarterback was not Jared Goff. The backup quarterback was not Jared Goff, but both of them are career quarterbacks. Do you know who the third quarterback, if both of those guys went down, was?
Starting point is 00:05:34 Do you know? I'm going to go with Jared Goff. It was the punter. Oh. Oh. So the punter for the Rams is a better quarterback than Jared Goff. Who the Rams gave up how much for, Jesse? So, the Titans, who had the number one overall pick,
Starting point is 00:05:53 in exchange for that pick, they got the 15th overall pick, two second round picks, a third round pick, and the Rams' first round pick in 2017. A football team. And their third round pick in 2017. Just a football team, in exchange for this one guy we're not going to use. Yeah. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:06:14 And the Rams' head coach coming out of training camp was like, Don't worry. He had a great camp. We're just warming him up. Okay. Can you imagine that happens to Austin Matthews in Toronto? People would lose their minds. The only reason this team can get away with this is because they just moved to L.A.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Now, there was— Sorry, go ahead. Sorry. Well, one thought before you continue, Adam. I don't think this will be the first time— Or, sorry. I don't think this will be the only time on this podcast where we wonder whether or not just some random sports fan off the street could run a sports team.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Doesn't matter the sport. You could run a sports team better than the people actually in charge. I think that you could have made half of that trade in Madden and got that pick. Like, that's how ridiculous that is. Now, there was one interesting moment from the game last night, and I'm not sure if you've heard this yet, but a guy decided that he was going to jump on the field, and the announcers got a little bored. Four looks into the nickel of San Francisco in the secondary. Hey, somebody has run out on the field.
Starting point is 00:07:15 some goofball and a hat and a red shirt now he takes off the shirt he's running down the middle by the 50 he's at the 30 he's bare chested and banging his chest now he runs the opposite way he runs at the 50 he runs at the 40 the guy is drunk but there he goes the 20 they're chasing him they're not gonna get him waving his arms bare chested somebody stop that now here comes the blue coat oh they got him here comes the blue goats oh and they tackle him at the 40 yard line That was the most exciting thing to happen tonight I tell you what, that was a great call Yes it was
Starting point is 00:07:52 Kevin Hartland for Westwood won Damn, that was a radio call by the way You know what, at the very beginning there Some goofball, I'm like right away He's going to be like, someone's on the field Turn the camera away Put it on someone in the audience We don't want to encourage that type of thing
Starting point is 00:08:09 Screw that, you are the play-by-play commentator and the play-by-play commentator during a boar fest. Get it going! Get me excited! Why am I watching this game? Holy smokes! I'm going to come back because even though it's a crappy team, I know you're going to spice it up a little bit. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:08:27 And when they do have a big game, it'll mean more. One, because they're bad and the good games will be rare. Two, because of you sir. Because of you. He did that team a favor. He did. Maybe not the security staff. Now the best part about this is who they put the camera on during this call. Because ESPN and I think the NFL got wise to the fact that people were doing this
Starting point is 00:08:46 because they wanted to be on TV. So to rob them of getting on the TV experience, which sucks for us as fans because typical NFL, they don't want us to have any fun. They put the camera squarely on the coach of the Los Angeles Rams whose team just happened to be down by 21 points. They hadn't even scored a point at that point. So you just see this angry old man with his arms crossed And every once in a while you see heads from the security run by
Starting point is 00:09:18 And that's all you see It's amazing Just an amazing set of experiences Thank God the NFL is back Now I have this article queued I didn't read it But it's from Deadspin Supposedly the dude who took off his shirt and was running around the field
Starting point is 00:09:34 Had his cell phone number written on his chest Nice And the title of the Deadspin article is, you know, goofball had number written on his chest. The idiot on the field at Monday Night Football wrote his number on his chest, so we called him. So they called him. That's amazing. I bet he's still in jail. I want to know what happened.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Oh, yeah, probably wasn't able to answer his phone. Oh, man. What a hero. Oh, they talked to him. They did? What'd they say? There was a whole interview there. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Get out. That's awesome. It makes me sad that I did not have time to look at that today. Oh, my God. That is so awesome. So we've got to get to hockey, because that's inevitably what we do. But I just thought, shout-outs to that, because it was a terrible game otherwise. Steelers, though.
Starting point is 00:10:14 What's up, Steelers Nation? Hey, I can appreciate anyone who spices up a crappy game. Absolutely. As a Leaf fan. That ain't easy. I can appreciate it. Now, do we actually know if Michelle Tarian chirped Max Patrick? No, we do not know that.
Starting point is 00:10:28 So what have we talked about on this podcast before? And Andrew Berkshire, I think, has talked about this before. Montreal is poorly managed. Yes. Well, yeah, certainly that. But also, stuff gets broken in the French media that somehow or another, in this hockey-mad country, in that hockey-mad media market, that bilingual hockey-mad media market. Yeah, what's their excuse? It doesn't trickle into English.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Somehow, we don't hear about it. Oh, we heard about this one. Not as much as I would have thought, but we did hear about this one. It broke in the French media that, at some point in time, didn't quite say when, I don't think. Michelle Tarian referred to Max Pacioretty as the worst captain in Montreal Canadiens history. Well, when you're the worst coach in Montreal Canadiens history. But seriously, what are the circumstances? How do we know this happened?
Starting point is 00:11:22 Do we have them on tape? No. No, my God. If we did, then we'd be talking uncertainties, right? That would be a coup. You'd have to fire. Yeah, you'd have to. You'd have to.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Or patches, or you'd have to trade patches, which they would probably do. Because they traded Subban, so anything's possible. Absolutely. So people were talking about, okay, first of all, we're just going to take this guy's word for it. We're just going to take this random Quebecois radio host's word for it, that Michel Tarian, he's just walking around town blabbing about his captain, poorly. Does anyone who will listen, any stranger, what kind of idiot coach would do that? No one.
Starting point is 00:12:01 That's who. And then someone tweeted An article from I think it was Two years ago Steve Spot Allegedly talking about Phil Kessel
Starting point is 00:12:12 And how he won't listen During a hockey camp Before he ever Was an assistant coach In his first Leafs game Right So It happens
Starting point is 00:12:25 And I mean Would it even be the most Ridiculous thing we've heard In the last week No but Did Tarion say that to this host? That I don't know. I haven't been able to listen to it yet.
Starting point is 00:12:36 And if I did listen to it, it would be in French. We should maybe, I should maybe get Berkshire on the horn for the online portion. If you can text, get him to text you the basic premise, because I'm sure he knows. We are impromptu calling, then we're going to impromptu call Andrew Berkshire. Okay. So. Because he is the one who called me yesterday. Are we on?
Starting point is 00:12:57 Mm-hmm. He's the one who called me yesterday to tell me about this. He just goes, Steve, how are you doing, Steve? This poor broken man. So here's what he's doing, for those of you who don't know him. He used to write about the Montreal Canadiens. Huge Montreal Canadiens fan. Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Andrew's got to pay his cell phone bills. Hang on. Keep going with that story. Anyway, huge Montreal Canadiens fan. He's been slowly falling out of love with the team. And then the P.K. Subban trade happens, and he goes, no! No more! I am not a Habs fan
Starting point is 00:13:29 No mas No mas And so he calls me up to tell me about the Pacioretty thing No, no, I just think it's funny You don't think it's funny, Andrew I mean, you might You might in a person losing their mind sort of way But you don't think it's funny
Starting point is 00:13:45 You're heartbroken by all of this Oh, here he is Andrew Berkshire Here's the man Hello Can you hear us, sir? I can hear you It is the Steve Dangle Podcast
Starting point is 00:13:55 And we're recording I did not know you were calling today No, well that's because I didn't tell you that Because we just came up with this idea right now Yeah, right on the air, right now Well, that's fun It's great that you're on demand like this though This is fantastic
Starting point is 00:14:08 Berkshire on demand I feel like you're the Netflix of hockey Yeah, you haven't hung up yet He's the show me of hockey, Adam Show me, right Can you tell me My TV in the background Oh
Starting point is 00:14:17 What are you watching? The World Cup, of course What are you wearing? Ah, very good What am I wearing? Well, you know Adam I can't go into detail on the radio portion. Okay, all right, fair enough.
Starting point is 00:14:26 Now, Andrew, here's the thing. We're talking about this alleged Michelle Tarian, Max Pacioretty comment. Can you shed some light on this whole story? Okay, have you already gone into, like, what was said? Yes. Okay, so just to give background, the guy who put this on the air, his name is Michelle Villeneuve. He's not exactly a guy who's known for journalistic standards and that kind of thing. uh not well respected i would say a lot of people if you ask them off the record in the media scene
Starting point is 00:15:02 will say they do not like this guy good i'm starting to think this is legit this is legit story for sure yeah but uh he's also somebody who as far as i've heard he says negative stuff all the time but he won't say anything unless he has something real. He just chooses to say some stuff that he probably isn't allowed to say. Like, for example, this stuff with Michel Therrien
Starting point is 00:15:31 was clearly something that's not on the record, and you're not supposed to share that stuff publicly, but he did anyway. So would he have had the conversation directly with Michel? No. What the conversation was that went down is apparently it was a golf tournament at some point,
Starting point is 00:15:50 And it was like a charity thing where you're at a table and you do a dinner or whatever or a lunch. And it was a group of eight different people that have told Michel Villeneuve at the table with Michel Therrien that he said this. Wow. That's what he said today. So that's still secondhand, right? Yes, it is secondhand. But when you've got eight sources, usually that's like most journalists will go with three, you know. so it's pretty solid but at the same time a lot of people will say this guy's just making it up
Starting point is 00:16:25 for rating us because that's kind of the nature of uh french sports radio it's very tabloidy okay but this is not outside of the character of michelle terrien i'll say it that way there are lots of things that he's said that have kind of slipped into the media that don't really get talked about but everyone kind of knows that they've been said like he used to
Starting point is 00:16:49 go around and tell people pretty much anybody who would listen that P.K. Subban wasn't a player that you could win a Stanley Cup with and he ended
Starting point is 00:16:56 up being right because P.K.'s not here anymore wow hey you know what that's a pretty easy statement to make because one in 29
Starting point is 00:17:05 chance you're going to be right well I mean you're a really crappy coach 29-30 and you know you're not going
Starting point is 00:17:11 to win the championship then you could say I couldn't win with any of these guys wow so let's just go through what we all know andrew yeah suban is already no longer a montreal canadian uh lord knows how long it is before they run max patch ready out of town well let's go back
Starting point is 00:17:30 one step suban is no longer a montreal canadian and leaks from the montreal canadians organization blamed max patch ready for that oh there you go so we're right now the domino they blamed max patch ready for the trade they made yeah and this is like it was this is great year there were leaks coming from within the organization that you know suban and patch ready have this huge feud and and you know patch ready this vindictive psycho who's telling everybody that he can't play with the suban and he needs to get him traded and then you talk to like different players on the team and they're like none of that happened you know like they just get really mad and like you know steve's talked to max patch ready i like max patch ready a lot but max patch ready is not an actor
Starting point is 00:18:16 no he has a commercial on the radio here that is probably the worst commercial that's ever run on they're not normally very good exactly i i've met him twice um and i came to the conclusion one he's very nice two and i'll word this delicately he's not tremendously complicated he's a hockey player you know what I'm saying yeah he's nice I think you say that
Starting point is 00:18:46 about a lot of NHL players yeah and I'm not saying that as an insult no no no he's just he's a straight shooter I get that and if somebody like that
Starting point is 00:18:53 says something that sounds like it's from the heart I'm gonna say they're not lying and he did an interview with Sportsnet I think the same day
Starting point is 00:19:01 he talked to him Steve that he went into detail about like his relationship with Subban and how much he was gonna miss him on the team
Starting point is 00:19:08 and I was like this guy's not BSing You know Like this isn't What a lie Sounds like No and
Starting point is 00:19:15 We And we spoke About this with Nick Kiprios And you know Everything started Clicking With regards to
Starting point is 00:19:21 That storyline Being BS If things go south For the Montreal Canadians In terms of The roster Who's gonna be
Starting point is 00:19:29 The first to face Criticism Ain't gonna be Carey Price It's gonna be Max Captain Supposed to be The leading goal scorer
Starting point is 00:19:36 Supposed to be Leading them in scoring And once he's traded Carey Price won't re-sign. And there's number three, Adam. Just knocking him down. Well, don't forget that, you know, Alex Galatini, it's not a real center
Starting point is 00:19:48 and he'll be traded at some point. Oh, God, I can't wait for him to be a Leaf. Or as Michelle Tarian thinks of him, slightly better Lars Eller. So he'll go for, I don't know, who's slightly better, Andrew Shaw. So, Andrew, Steve and I were, you know, obviously you were on a lot earlier this summer
Starting point is 00:20:08 talking about what happened in Montreal and that sort of thing. And Steve, when he was reintroducing you to the listeners, although I'm pretty sure everybody in the podcast knows, it's the radio listeners that are still probably getting to know you. I think that's actually our second most listened to show now. How he described you was almost a former Montreal Canadiens fan. Is that the case? I would say so.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Liar! I've been pretty open about that. I would say that I don't think I will care this season about wins or losses, but if everybody was fired, I would still care about the team. You know what I mean? Like, if they were to clean the house, I would be able to reinvest still. Okay. Like, I'm at that point where I'm not, like, completely tethered.
Starting point is 00:21:03 You know, like, I'm not burning my Canadian jersey or selling it. No. I still have my signed Patrick Wall photo on the wall. I'm not that kind of jolted fan, but I don't have any emotional investment in them winning. In fact, I would rather see them lose a lot this season so that the people in charge would be shown to be as incompetent as they are. Well, so then here's my follow-up,
Starting point is 00:21:29 and this is for both Steve and for Andrea and Jesse, everybody in the room. Okay. As bad as things have been for the Leafs over the last two, three years, okay? As bad as? Is that how as bad? Is that how? Is it comparable to what's going on in Montreal right now?
Starting point is 00:21:50 Or is Montreal, in your minds, worse? I'm going to let you answer this because you compared it to something very funny yesterday. Did I? I don't remember what I said. Um, oh, I think you've noticed what you said. Well, the way I see it is that the Canadians actually had a real cup window, and I say had on purpose, not has, had. And they had, you know, a top two defenseman in the NHL,
Starting point is 00:22:23 a top-end left winger, the best goalie in the world, and they've just screwed that up. Whereas Toronto, you know, they had a couple of pieces, but they were never in a competitive mode. So that continual suck fest was, you know, depressing, but it's not like you were missing out on anything. Right, we weren't expecting to go anywhere anyway. That's why my...
Starting point is 00:22:47 So the Leafs are who we thought they were. That's why my video about the Phil Kessel trade to Pittsburgh is called an era wasted. Because they were never actually in it. Nope. Never not once. But, Steve, they could have beat Boston, and then... Oh, and then they beat the Rangers, and then the Penguins, and then...
Starting point is 00:23:05 Oh, shut up. Andrew? Yes? I'm sorry. It's all right. Don't worry. We love you, and we appreciate you picking up the phone, especially for a random 416 number when you're a 514. It's my pleasure.
Starting point is 00:23:22 And we want to let you get back to watching, I believe it's Finland USA, correct? It is indeed. I'm just looking at Elliott Friedman's mug right now. Oh, and it's a handsome mug. And actually, it's funny. We do need to talk about, when we come back on the Steve Dangle podcast, we're going to go to break. We need to come back and talk about the other coach calling out Max Pacioretty.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Andrew, if you want to stick around and join us for that, I'd love to hear your thoughts. It is the Steve Dangle podcast, and we will be right back. So we just talked about the Montreal Canadiens coach calling out Max Pacioretty. Leader. Randy Cunningworth. Not Randy Cunningworth. Oh, am I out of date?
Starting point is 00:23:58 No, just a little bit. Who is it? just move the dial forward just a little bit who's there now what's his name it's not Claude Julien it's
Starting point is 00:24:05 Randy Cunningworth Michelle Terrian yeah I call her again yeah oh that's amazing crazy right okay
Starting point is 00:24:12 and then and then Max Pacioretty's playing on another team I don't know if you're aware of this it's team Yusa and
Starting point is 00:24:19 Asa team yeah team team Asa or Yusa I don't know how the actual pronouncing of the spelling goes
Starting point is 00:24:26 I believe it's Yusa their head coach who I believe is named after some pasta Tortorella was was
Starting point is 00:24:34 that's a half Italian I take that as racism sir he was bold enough to call out Max Petrae Tortorella eats at Baba Bucci's
Starting point is 00:24:40 yeah you guys are both both italophobic it's fear of italics so anyway so pre two
Starting point is 00:24:55 flippin preseason games and John Tortorella Pre-tournament game Not even pre-season John Tortorella's calling out Max Pacioretty One of the only players on Team OUSA That is ever even going to challenge to score a goal Now, Andrew Berkshire
Starting point is 00:25:11 Who is a Montreal Canadiens writer He used to be And headbanger on the Waller Now he is an analytics expert Yeah, that's right Andrew, what do you think of that particular sentiment? I thought it was a bit of a soft calling out considering it's torts but at the same time like when you're going to give a guy seven minutes ice
Starting point is 00:25:33 time and you don't understand what kind of player he is i don't understand the point of calling him out like if you want max patch ready to play like brandon dubinsky then don't name max patch ready to your hockey team you know like there's a huge narrative that follows patch already that when he's not scoring he looks invisible but that's mostly from people who think that if you're not a goal scorer you have to be like a mucker and he's not you know same with steven stamkos and phil kessel and oh my god you know like those guys and like stamkos is a bit like patch ready in that outside of goal scoring his main uh strength is transitioning the puck you know skating with it but patch ready is a little bit better defensively well actually a lot better but
Starting point is 00:26:19 But, you know, he's also, like, Pacioretty is, over the last four seasons, the best penalty-killing winger in the NHL. And it's not particularly close. He's, like, incredible at it. And if he gets the puck on the penalty kill, he's going to score shorthanded. You know, like, between him and Brad Marchand,
Starting point is 00:26:36 those are the two guys that you want on the penalty kill on the wing. They're just crazy. So not using him on the penalty kill seems insane to me because Tortorella is too obsessed with shot block. So he's got guys like Abdelkader out there who don't really accomplish anything. But they're hard-nosed, smash-mouthed, put your hard hat on, lift heavy things, hockey.
Starting point is 00:26:58 Yeah, and this is, like, the kind of thing that I don't understand about that strategy is they're like, oh, yeah, we're going to go in and rough Canada up, and then it's like, okay, you've got, like, Bufflin and Bacchus, but then, like, do you really think you're going to intimidate Canada, who's got, like, look at the guys on that team.
Starting point is 00:27:14 Like, Shea Weber, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaff, There was a point in I think the second game Between USA and Canada Where Abdelkader went to get in Getzlaff's face And Getzlaff one handed Just grabbed him by the nose And threw him to the ice There's a great one of Brent Burns
Starting point is 00:27:31 Near the end of the game Just grabbing Abdelkader from behind And he's just kind of got this Like when you hold a puppy And the puppy's trying to wriggle out And after a couple seconds it realizes No I'm here to stay Until he puts me down
Starting point is 00:27:45 when you get Joe Thornton running over Ryan Kessler man if you make Joe Thornton mad he is going to eat you alive and that's not a guy and that's not a guy you think of in that way but when you
Starting point is 00:28:02 comprise a team of the most talent and the most strength and you tell them to play a certain way guess what they'll be better than a guy who plays that way because he has to Yeah, exactly
Starting point is 00:28:16 In 2010 Who was the shutdown guy for Canada in 2010? Was it Yeah, did they get Kirk Maltby and Chris Draper to do it again? No, they got Rick freaking Nash Yeah, that's right He played great on the penalty kill there too
Starting point is 00:28:33 It was like when the Leafs were drafting Guys who Who were like Hard-nosed big guys And they were avoiding, intentionally avoiding Smaller guys who had lots of talent because they're like, well, we have enough of those.
Starting point is 00:28:47 We need to go after these hard-nosed guys. But the point is, just like in the NHL where you can trade skill for grit if you need it, you can't turn grit into skill. It's like jumping into water. It's easier to get wet than it is to get dry. Do you know what that's saying? Yeah, and it's like,
Starting point is 00:29:04 do you remember when everybody was making fun of the Boston Bruins? Killer comparison. They drafted a guy in the first round. They were like, if everything works out, he'll be a third liner. In the first round. Yep, yep, we've done that.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Been there. So here's what, Steve, I want to get your thoughts on it, too, unless you agree completely with Andrew and add nothing to it. Yeah, kind of. What does, guys, what does torts and what does Team USA get out of this? Like, what do they get out of this? What could possibly benefit from a pre-tournament tournament, which is pre-season, to the NHL pre-season?
Starting point is 00:29:44 It's pre-pre. So this is what I was tweeting, is that Tortorella is just a media gift basket. He really is. The gift that keeps on giving. Didn't need to say it. Didn't need to say it. What is to be gained? Like you said. And then I had a few people messaging me And I saw a few people tweeting Kind of sub-tweety That A. Pacioretty plays his best hockey When he is called out And he's motivated
Starting point is 00:30:11 B. This is just a common Tortorella tactic And maybe he's a good coach Because maybe he knows that Andrew, is there anything to that? I think there is Pacioretty has in the past You know, had great streaks After, especially media criticism
Starting point is 00:30:27 him and he's known like i've talked to patch ready several times and he's a great guy but i will say one of his faults is that he is very thin-skinned with what people say about him he doesn't like being criticized good for him you know that can light a fire under him i guess once in a while but i think there's a third reason and after two games against canada i think maybe john tortorella realized that his team is terrible and has no chance of winning this tournament And he basically created a scapegoat for himself They won one of those games They did
Starting point is 00:31:00 Yeah but did they play well? No They got like blown apart in terms of scoring chances And Jonathan Quick had His one great night that he has every month LA fans are just Living with you right now That is not a popular take
Starting point is 00:31:20 That is very funny One great night he has every month There's someone Whose tweets I always see in my timeline And for some reason I wasn't following them Now I am following them I don't know how to pronounce her name I think it's Kicker Laika
Starting point is 00:31:33 And she was tweeting Some quotes from a story today About Team USA I would like to read them to you And I wish I could give credit But all she did was screen cap the story So, anyway It was from Joey McDonald
Starting point is 00:31:47 Oh, you beauty As in the former goalie? No, no, no Uh, from ESPN, I think. Oh, okay, sure. I think his Twitter name is ESPN Joey McDonald. Gotcha. For this story, I reached out to a few different hockey personnel on both sides of the border.
Starting point is 00:32:03 So, some Canadians, some Americans. I polled players from other teams in this tournament, and the majority believe Team USA will beat Team Canada. And this is a quote. Both teams are talented Probably the best two teams in the tournament Said one current NHL player Who is neither American nor Canadian But the identity and chemistry
Starting point is 00:32:24 And the role players I like the U.S. more This is why you don't ask hockey players About personnel decisions One thing we should talk about Is that Joey McDonald definitely reports In the Boston area And you know that he's talking to some guy
Starting point is 00:32:39 Who's like, oh yeah, I'd rather Justin Advocato Than Tyler Sagan yo i okay so i'm gonna throw this one at you guys all right here's a drew dowdy quote so somebody said hey team north america looking pretty strong huh and he's like yeah yeah absolutely absolutely andrew dowdy by the way looks like the friend of yours that has seen too many punches right now. I don't know. He's missing a tooth. He's got a beard. So he already looks goofy.
Starting point is 00:33:14 And it's in a fun way. I'm not saying this in a mean way. Everybody chill. But he said they might be more skilled than us. This is what he said about North America. They might be more skilled than us, but experience wins over skill. Which I think
Starting point is 00:33:30 is a more sound argument. Sound, but still. The thing is, I don't think that's true because I don't think they're more skilled than canada either i think he's just saying stuff because it's fun to get people riled up okay you know like do we do we also like do we really think that team north america has more skill than team canada no because they don't on defense in goal you know i think even if you give them equal skill you know they might have that but what drew down he's saying
Starting point is 00:34:02 does have a little bit of merit and like if you watch those team north america games they're playing, like, super fun, but they were also beating up on Team Europe, which has, like, four good players. So, like, they played, like, high-tempo exhibition hockey, whereas Team Canada
Starting point is 00:34:19 against the U.S. played, like, playoff-level hockey, and I do think that, if all things being equal, even if Team North America was a bit more skilled, Canada would just destroy them because they are more seasoned. Are there any good teams in this tournament, Andrew? So far, you said USA?
Starting point is 00:34:35 sucks, North America's awful, Europe's garbage, is Canada even good? Canada's alright. Okay. Sweden's good. Who's your team? USA is fine. Who's your team? Who am I cheering for? Yeah, well, who do you think's the best team, most likely to win?
Starting point is 00:34:52 Because I know this will bug people. Canada or Sweden, I think it's a toss-up. It really depends on whether or not Carey Price is that first exhibition game, or if he can get his feet on the rope. Alright. Don't let my Canada hat fool you. Team North America, all the way! All the way! I'd be okay with that just because it would blow up some of the narratives that go on.
Starting point is 00:35:09 If the kids win, all of a sudden you have all these older guys that have to explain how the 23-year-old kids won. Oh, I'm looking forward to that. Oh, it's going to be so great. Looking forward to that. Well, Andrew, we so appreciate you taking time out of your day and your Elliott Friedman viewing. Because we know that his face was on screen when we took you away from him. So we're going to give you back to Elliott. But your candid analysis of the Montreal Canadiens is probably the most entertaining thing in my world, just in general.
Starting point is 00:35:42 I look forward to the day you go back to them. You're not divorcing the Montreal Canadiens. You're just staying at someone's house for a year. I changed my Facebook status to It's Complicated. Andrew Berkshire, Andrew, where can we find you? Twitter, Facebook, website, what do we got? Twitter, Andrew Berkshire, Twitter, the Twitter name, that's my Twitter name. Good job.
Starting point is 00:36:02 That's good. It's great. Well done. Keep that up. Keep that up. All right, now hang on. What else we got? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Oh. Andrew Berkshire Page or Sportsnet, Vice Sports sometimes, and a Bell website. Never heard of it. No, not that. No, I heard Vice. I heard Sportsnet. You cut out after that. Cool, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:24 Hey, Andrew. Pleasure talking to you, buddy. I heard show me a couple times. Later, man. Talk to you guys later. It was so weird. So he cut out on the broadcast But we could actually hear him
Starting point is 00:36:35 What he said was to Update your cable package That's right Yes It was the strangest thing It was a good opportunity For him to tell us that We've had some pretty smart people on the show
Starting point is 00:36:47 We have We have Not us Maybe Jesse Nope Okay Jesse just The Skip Bayless of our show
Starting point is 00:36:54 Just said he was not smart I'm offended by that Adam How dare you I saw you standing for the national anthem You're not supposed to stand, Adam Cops or pigs Haven't you seen the South Park preview? Yes, yes
Starting point is 00:37:15 He's not actually saying that What is the South Park preview? I can't wait to see that episode Looks hysterical And they reboot the national anthem To put this into context And they sing this national anthem Which is basically the American
Starting point is 00:37:29 and Canadian psyche right now which is everybody goes from I hate the cops to I'm calling the cops because someone just robbed me
Starting point is 00:37:39 and they just gave me my stuff back but I hate the cops and obviously and this is just the preview this is a 30 second preview and they reboot
Starting point is 00:37:47 the national anthem and it's hilarious so that's what Jesse means nope yes I know what I said I love that we as a society
Starting point is 00:37:55 decided this one show just this one show Not allowed to get into trouble Yeah Can't It's amazing South Park? Oh yeah
Starting point is 00:38:02 They get free reign to do whatever they want Do and say anything We've had some smart people on the show You were saying something Yes Andrew Berkshire is one of those smart people We've had Elliot Friedman on Oh my god
Starting point is 00:38:13 Nick Kiprios Nick Kiprios Jeff Merrick Let's throw Sasky Stewart in there I would Christina Rutherford Yep Rutherford
Starting point is 00:38:21 She hates the way I say her name I don't know what I'm saying wrong Anyway We've had some really smart people on the show And one thing that I remember one of them saying, and I wish I remember who it was, for some reason I've narrowed it down to Friedman or Merrick, and it was about a GM who we strongly disagreed with on something. And it was, this guy has been around for a very long time, and he's a smart hockey guy, and you don't get to where this person is by being dumb. and i thought about that and i've and and for a long time i was like you know what i need to be a little bit more mature with my opinions i need to be i need to have more
Starting point is 00:39:02 consideration when there's an opinion i disagree with when there's a move i disagree with i need to dig deep within myself try to get into this person's shoes and figure out why they did it Empathy, that's called Empathy, but understanding as well And then God, I just see some of the stuff that happens in this league And I go, no, no, they're that dumb Like, why can't they be experienced and stupid?
Starting point is 00:39:29 Yep I know lots of people who have tons of experience and are stupid Like, why? I don't think that argument holds Actually, I'm listening to this podcast right now That's called The History of Rome And literally What a strange podcast.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Who did they interview for it? Romans? I'm not proud. There are literal emperors. That was terrible. Literal emperors that did not know how to, they couldn't hold a sword, they couldn't do math, they couldn't do anything, but they just became emperor just because they were born to the right person, or somebody politically did the right thing, or they killed someone
Starting point is 00:40:07 at the right time with some poison. That is it. So it really, you could just be good at politicking to get into a position of power. It doesn't mean you're actually qualified to be there. You are qualified to be there when you have some track record of success. Are you saying Jim Benning poisoned Mike Gillis? I'm not saying that. I'm just saying.
Starting point is 00:40:26 I'm sorry. I mean, Donald Trump's running for president. Come on. Now, in this, I just see the stuff and I see what people were saying about the Michelle comments and look if i step outside myself if i step outside the entertainment factor of all this of course it's unlikely that a head coach of a national hockey league team much less the montreal canadiens is just waltzing around going to golf tournaments sitting down with people and talking about how bad his captain is in a historical context he's the worst captain
Starting point is 00:40:57 in our team's history in a long history And then I think about it And I go, no, it's not that crazy It's not, no Listen, whether this is true or not It's believable It's believable And I saw some people going
Starting point is 00:41:13 Man, the fact The fact that I'm even sort of believing this Is an audit on the Montreal Canadiens Or it's an audit on Michel Therrien No, I think it's just It's most teams How many teams can we say this about? All of them
Starting point is 00:41:25 Pretty much all of them Yeah, here's the thing If I heard the same thing, and let's say Morgan Rielly was the captain of the Leafs and they'd had a bad season, and I heard that Mike Babcock was going around saying that, I would probably say, no, that probably didn't happen. Because Mike's not a talker. Mike wouldn't do that. I don't think.
Starting point is 00:41:46 I don't think. To me, I'd be like, yeah, whatever. What's that? He talks when prompted. Oh, you mean like off the record? Yeah, I don't think he would say that. No, I don't think, yeah, Morgan Rielly's our captain. Like I don't think he's going to leak that
Starting point is 00:41:59 Or that he was a bad captain Say he was the captain I just don't see Mike Babcock doing that Yeah well you know FNF sucked That's why we traded him Can you believe the Sens took him? That's awesome Tortorella and Tarion TNT Music Factory
Starting point is 00:42:15 TNT Rumor Factory Are to me the guys That was a stretch A bit of a stretch Steve Tweekoff is hat though so that was serious That was a tight one That's what she said. Wow, man.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Just out for all the offensive. He's getting ready for South Park. I just feel like those are the guys I would expect it from. Everybody else would be like, I don't know if I believe that. I think it's just your past behavior is your future predictor. Right? Or the NHL is a silly place. Let's not go to Camelot.
Starting point is 00:42:53 It's a silly place. It is a silly place. Let's not go to Montreal. Can I provide a World Cup of Hockey update? Yes, Jesse, big bomb. So, Tyler Sagan might miss the entire World Cup after suffering a knee injury, according to Nick Kiprios. An official announcement will come as early as Wednesday morning.
Starting point is 00:43:11 Oh, no! That means they're going to have to unscratch Claude Giroux. That's right. So, we got three minutes here. Can we quickly go through Canada's power play unit here? And by the way, they had Claude Giroux scratched. Yes. That five on five.
Starting point is 00:43:30 Yeah. So their top line is Crosby, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron. Hilarious. Their second line, Taves, Stamkos, Couture. Hilarious. Third line, Tavares, Getz, Laff, Perry. John Tavares is the other guy on your third line. And their fourth line, Thornton, Sagan, slash Giroux, Duchesne.
Starting point is 00:43:55 That's literally, let's just throw the rest here. And now it's going to have to be... Sorry, continue. So they're replacing Sagan with Giroux. So I said something that sounds so stupid when you say it out loud, but it sort of makes sense, I think, before the show. I've made a YouTube career off that. Yeah, which is, Matt Duchesne's lucky to be on this team.
Starting point is 00:44:16 Yeah, totally. And he's Matt Duchesne He's amazing He's lucky to be on the team They've had a bunch of injuries You know You add Jeff Carter to that You add Tyler Sagan
Starting point is 00:44:27 Back to that You add Jamie Benn to that Who else is hurt Up front Maybe more Hey here's something That would maybe take up some time How much time do we have left
Starting point is 00:44:38 We have a minute and a half Ah damn Okay well let's be real quick then There's no team North America They have Latvia and Norway Does Connor McDavid Make Team Canada And if so
Starting point is 00:44:52 Who goes That's a damn good question We should look at Giroux Crosby Getzlav And Thornton And
Starting point is 00:44:59 Tavares He makes it 100% he makes it But I don't know It looks like Giroux It would have to be Giroux Which veteran
Starting point is 00:45:08 Which veteran on this team And more importantly This Person with a long Standing relationship With Hockey Canada Which we know They value so much
Starting point is 00:45:19 Which one of them Do they spurn For this It would be Giroux This kid Because they spurned him last time Yeah I guess It would have to be Giroux
Starting point is 00:45:25 Because they got this kid Who's played like what 40, 50 NHL games Who is Maybe going to win The Hart Trophy Like How about this one
Starting point is 00:45:34 Does Aaron Ekblad Kick off any one Of the Canada defensemen Jay Bomeester There you go Yeah but Jay Bomeester Is replacing Duncan Keith Like Jay Bomeester
Starting point is 00:45:43 Is an injury replacement Jay Bomeester we gotta go on the Steve Dangle podcast it's brought to you by Panago Pizza it's what's on the inside that counts
Starting point is 00:45:53 in the podcast portion of this Steve gets more free stuff what a surprise we're gonna talk a little bit about that plus North America
Starting point is 00:46:01 didn't do some of their homework so we're gonna help them out with that they have not decided on a goal song yet also also Austin Matthews probably a bust
Starting point is 00:46:09 probably a bust and I'm gonna tell you why that's a shame for him in the download portion of this sportsnet.ca we'll talk to you soon Jesse just like
Starting point is 00:46:20 literally took a two minute break Jesse said in this two minute break something controversial and wrong but we love him because again
Starting point is 00:46:28 he is the first take of this show and Jesse what did you say? It was about Russia and their regime I'm not a fan of communism and I went off on it
Starting point is 00:46:39 in those two minutes It was great He solved all world issues in two minutes And we forgot to request I also said McDavid wouldn't be on Team Canada at all Adam said
Starting point is 00:46:49 Wrong No I say Jesse is absolutely right Get out He's 19 Adam Guys He's 19
Starting point is 00:46:58 He's played like 50 games Jesse can you look up how many games he's played He's played 40 games Like 42 games Something like that And he's gonna be on Team Canada Half an NHL season So now you take Team Canada
Starting point is 00:47:09 Alright You take Okay The lineup I think I can almost do it from memory at this point So you got Marshawn, Crosby, Bergeron Uh huh
Starting point is 00:47:18 No, okay, here are the lines Marshawn, Crosby, Bergeron Couture, Tave, Stamkos Tavares, Getzlaff, Perry Duchesne, Sagan, Thornton Now wait, wait Perry is an injury replacement Couture is an injury replacement
Starting point is 00:47:38 I'll take Couture off that team and put McDavid on the wing And a harpy He's not even a better player than Couture at this point. So you add... Connor McDavid is a better player than Couture. Than Lowe. Yes, he is. Yes, he is.
Starting point is 00:47:51 Come on, guys. But how much better? The amount... Way better. He needs to be... He's a sort of... He needs to be a certain amount better, Adam. Adam, I'm not...
Starting point is 00:48:03 This is not the decision I would make. Let me make that perfectly clear. You're talking about Hockey Canada, first of all. This is not the decision I would make. Okay, so here's Logan Couture with my left hand, all right? Here's Connor McDavid. McDavid's up here, all right? Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:48:16 He's higher. Okay. Longer standing relationship with Hockey Canada. Boom. A grown-ass man. A grown-ass man! All right, all right, now. What are we arguing?
Starting point is 00:48:26 Now, hold on, hold on. Do you remember? He's a child. Does anybody remember the 2006 Olympics? In Torino. In Torino. I remember when they sat Eric Stahl. I remember when they sat
Starting point is 00:48:39 Jason Spezza for most of it And I remember when they sat Crosby In fact, I don't think Crosby made the team I think he was on the taxi squad He was like the Ed Belfort of forwards So, when that happened When that happened, they had guys like Iserman
Starting point is 00:48:56 Sakic Lemieux Lemieux Gretzky Big Not Gretzky Big names Big, big names
Starting point is 00:49:03 Those three that we just mentioned Lemieux, Sakic, Iserman Big names And at the time They said Well we're going with experience We're going with experience Steve Eisenman was playing on .2
Starting point is 00:49:17 Of a knee Sackick was slowing down And old And slow and old Man that's what they were saying about Joe Thornton at the time Yeah really That was 10 years ago And Lemieux was still Mario
Starting point is 00:49:31 But he wasn't 2002 comeback Mario He was 4 plus years Now Now, that team lost, and they lost bad at the sport that we're supposed to be the best in the world at, right? Okay, so what happened? What happened to the management group that went with those guys over the guys like Crosby when they knew how good Sidney Crosby was? What happened to them? I guess they went bye-bye, Adam.
Starting point is 00:49:59 They all went bye-bye. They cleaned house. assistant coaches, general managers Wayne Gretzky said, you know what guys I don't even want to do it anymore because he's Wayne Gretzky and they let him off easy I'm going to go coach the Coyotes for oh never mind, screw this
Starting point is 00:50:14 yeah, I'm telling you if Connor McDavid was not on that team and they didn't win you don't want to, you as a manager have to be smarter than that you do not want to know what that looks like so you put him on the taxi squad, fine maybe he sees some pre-games
Starting point is 00:50:31 But he doesn't actually play in the tournament If that makes you feel better But Connor McDavid is on Team Canada Bar none Bar none None of that was the same as taking Duchesne Off of the roster and putting in McDavid I said Couture
Starting point is 00:50:46 Did Duchesne make the team Outright or is he a replacement I'm not sure He's an amazing player You see that roster, you leave Sagan in there You assume he's not hurt Find a spot for Jeff Carter Find a spot for Jamie Benn
Starting point is 00:51:03 Who's Corey Perry replacing? Oh he's replacing Jeff Carter Yes And Logan Couture replaced Jamie Benn I think That makes sense I think so Let's confirm that
Starting point is 00:51:18 Let us confirm that Alright so here's I'm just saying man This might be the only podcast that's ever happened Where I come out on top Where Twitter lights the two of you suckers up And I love you both But I don't think you're right on this one
Starting point is 00:51:34 Jesse found the original So it's Ben, Bergeron, Carter, Crosby Duchesne did make the original roster Getzlaff, Giroux, Marchand Sagan, Stamkos, Tavares Thornton, Taves I'd take Carter off that roster And I'd take
Starting point is 00:51:50 Is Couture on that roster, the original? I would take Carter off that roster 1000% and I love Jeff Carter Instead of Duchesne And you'd put a 19-year-old child. Absolutely. You don't need Jeff Carter. Adam's just completely ignoring the politics of all this,
Starting point is 00:52:06 which is my entire argument. But it's Connor McDavid. He is the future. You've got to put him on. Not over these people who have been to the Olympics, who've done these tournaments, who've been in Spangler Cups. You're not going to kick them off with McDavid.
Starting point is 00:52:20 Yeah, they wore a Zeppelin sticker. Goddamn. When it comes to Hockey Canada, Connor McDavid being the captain of Team North America is the best thing that could happen to them. Best, comrade. Best.
Starting point is 00:52:32 Because they don't have to have this stupid conversation. Yeah. Or put him on the taxi squad or fourth line. You guys. No matter what, even if they put him on the team,
Starting point is 00:52:41 they wouldn't be playing him enough. You know that to be true. I agree with that. That guy would be playing fourth fucking night, Adam. How much Conor McDavid is on Team Canada is my argument.
Starting point is 00:52:49 I didn't say how much ice time he'd get. Conor McDavid's on Team Canada. Is PK on the team? No. Should he be? No, yes, he freaking should be. Politics.
Starting point is 00:53:00 Connor McDavid wouldn't make the team. And then it's politics plus, holy shit, Team Canada's really good. Like, everyone's like, PK, PK, PK. Dude, Crystal Tang didn't make Team Canada. They don't really need Subban. No. They don't. It's funny, they don't really need any of the players they have with the exception of Crosby.
Starting point is 00:53:21 Because they can kind of cycle him out for a bunch of other guys. No offense. I think not making Team Canada is not as outrageous as, I would say, Phil Kessel not making Team USA. Yeah, that's absolutely stupid. Because they have, like, Brent Burns. Who are the right-handed D? Drew Doughty. Brent Burns, Drew Doughty.
Starting point is 00:53:41 Keith. Alex Petrangelo. No, Keith is the left. Keith is the left, yeah. Seabrook, no. Weber. Oh, yeah, Weber's on the team, so there's four guys. Seabrook's not on the team.
Starting point is 00:53:51 Letang's not on the team. God, that just sticks in my craw that freaking Weber's on that team and no Subban. That just kills me. And I'm not even a Habs fan. Politics! He's been around for fucking ever! And he scored 20 goals last year. We can't really ignore that.
Starting point is 00:54:03 No, he's a great defenseman. But, oh. All right. This is what I'm saying, Adam. Guys, guys. I love you. You're not considering that they're human. Yeah, but also, okay.
Starting point is 00:54:11 But think about it like this, then. From a marketing and politics, from a marketing perspective, which does play into the politics, okay? So, we take the optics out of what happens when you lose and Connor McDavid is not on the team. Take those optics out. Then factor in that you are basically, basically putting your stamp on this one kid being the face of Hockey Canada for the next 10 to 15 years. Okay?
Starting point is 00:54:39 So you're going to tell me that the first World Cup in 12 years, you're not going to involve the future? I'm sorry, guys. He is one. Because he'll never forget that snub. And when you need him more He's going to show up But it's not going to be the same He'll never forget that
Starting point is 00:54:58 You don't want that You don't want to start the relationship off on that foot But it's not a snub It is a snub It's a thousand percent a snub If they don't name him to the team He's better than players on that team He should be on that team
Starting point is 00:55:12 Is he good enough Ignoring all politics Is he good enough skill wise To be on that team Then it's a snub Then it's politics right If it's politics It's not a snub
Starting point is 00:55:24 In context If it's politics It's a snub The context makes it a snub No the context Makes it Hey you should realize You haven't earned this
Starting point is 00:55:32 No but this isn't A tiebreaker Like he's not As good as No he's not As good as an older guy He's better than The older guy
Starting point is 00:55:40 Yeah so you're Actively going out of your way To pick a player Less good That's my point How many of these guys Is McDavid better than You can make an argument
Starting point is 00:55:50 He's Canada's second best forward No You can make the argument I think that's a I think that's a pretty small Window to make that decision No Even I think that's a
Starting point is 00:56:00 I just said it off the top of my head I was like Sidney Crosby And no one else First round's a bum Am I gonna say That I could've got OJ off the case Am I gonna say this
Starting point is 00:56:10 Okay You have The helmet does not fit One game to win One game You have to assemble a team And if your team wins, you get to live. Do you take Brad Marchand or Connor McDavid?
Starting point is 00:56:24 Connor McDavid. No! In a one-on-one, do you take Brad Marchand or Connor McDavid? Do you take Joe Thornton or Connor McDavid? Do you take Jeff Carter or Connor McDavid? Jeff Carter. Do you take Logan Couture or Connor McDavid? Every day of the week, Logan Couture.
Starting point is 00:56:42 Corey Perry or Connor McDavid? That's not a question. Connor McDavid. Conor McDavid's the fifth center on my team. Then he makes it. Because Giroux's the fifth center on the team. Sure. Okay, fine.
Starting point is 00:56:55 Holy shit! Holy shit! Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Okay. We all agree. Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
Starting point is 00:57:04 We all agree. Anderson's gone. It was like, Conor McDavid is the fifth center on Team Canada. When I was 16. When I was 16. Canada has 13 centers, man! When I was 16, my host league hockey team,
Starting point is 00:57:21 John's Carpet Sales, got into the finals and we won in overtime. And it was comparable to the feeling I just had right now. By the way... I'm glad that you guys agree
Starting point is 00:57:32 that McDavid's a little better than Giroux. I can say that. I can say that. And no one else on the team. Agreed. Oh, wait. Did Giroux make the original roster?
Starting point is 00:57:42 Yes. I can't wait for the tweets to come in I'm pretty sure you did Oh Jesse Oh You had that pizza almost entirely to yourself Are you going to be able to fit in that humble pie No
Starting point is 00:57:56 Logan Couture didn't I know that I still said Logan Couture is better than Connor McGinnis Connor McGinnis got bumped off my teeth There's Skip We found him We found Skip He was bumped off my teeth
Starting point is 00:58:08 I'm sorry Jesse would you prefer Skip or Stephen A Which one do you want to be That's like Jesse Blake, please Alright, Jesse Blake Mr. Jesse Blake I'm sorry, but if Couture's on my team What's your middle name?
Starting point is 00:58:21 What's the initial of your middle name? Jesse J. Blake I like that Feeling sexy and free The good is raining on me Hey guys, did you know Conor McDavid's gonna be a bust? Yes Didn't you mean Austin Matthews?
Starting point is 00:58:38 I'm sorry, I do mean Austin Matthews, yes But Conor McDavid, clearly a bust too Oh, well, I was just, before we get into that, you know, I'm just glad we really, I'm glad we got this out of our systems. Oh, I'm exhausted. Let's not have any more intense arguments so that Adam can bring up this topic. Like, let's not say something stupid like, would Johnny Gaudreau make the team if there was no Team Canada? We shouldn't say that. We shouldn't bring that up.
Starting point is 00:59:03 You know? If you mean there's no Team North America. Sorry, yeah, if there's no Team North America, would Johnny Gaudreau make the team? We shouldn't have that argument. You think Johnny Goudreau is better than those wingers? Matt Duchesne shouldn't be on this team if Johnny Goudreau was available. One of them is a winger. So you take him position-wise?
Starting point is 00:59:23 You take him position-wise over... Because the thing is, setters can play wing traditionally, right? Traditionally, but Goudreau... Where did Goudreau finish in NHL scoring last year? Was he in top 5? He was top 15, at least. It was great. I don't think Duchesne was.
Starting point is 00:59:38 And they're not, and I actually have a list here of all the unrestricted, sorry, not restricted, sorry, excuse me, restricted free agents, that's what I was looking for, that we're going to get to, that are still left. You would not believe the names on this list that NHL teams have not re-signed yet. Seven. He was seventh in NHL scoring! Wow. You know what, though? Martin St. Louis won the scoring title and then was named off of the Sochi team. Yeah, well, that was ridiculous.
Starting point is 01:00:02 Oh, my God. Someone had to get hurt for him to be on their team. You know what, based on that, I can see that. I think that's a value Yeah Absolutely No room for McDavid Yet
Starting point is 01:00:11 Oh no Not over McDavid No Also McDavid's 6'4 And grit chart He is? Isn't he? I don't think so
Starting point is 01:00:20 I heard he was 6'4 He's tall He's not that tall Oh okay He's like 6'1 too Oh okay fine Oh wow I'm so off
Starting point is 01:00:27 Um So So he's Yeah Two inches? A 6'1 dude And a 6'4 dude Guys
Starting point is 01:00:34 Guys Couple inches here There Why do you think I'm engaged? Come on. Lies. Just all lies. Now, Austin Matthews, not ready for the NHL.
Starting point is 01:00:46 Obviously. And here's the proof, guys. Here's the proof. This is a tweet from a man named Mark Dumont, who works at a silly channel in Montreal, which is a silly place. I happen to like Mark very much. We had a sandwich together one time. So, Mark said, Austin Matthews grabbed his own hockey bag and started to walk off after practice.
Starting point is 01:01:07 The equipment manager had to remind him that people are paid to do that for him now. Aw, he's just so perfect and awesome! Oh, that's so cute. Isn't that cute? Isn't it? Oh, God! Clearly meaning he's a bust, right? He's not ready for the NHL.
Starting point is 01:01:20 A story like that makes me feel like one day he will be worthy of wearing the number 34 in a Leafs uniform. Unisform. It's a word now. Well, what was he wearing at camp? 63? 63. He's definitely worthy of that.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Who's not worthy of 63? I'd give him $25 million before I'd give Bolin $25 million. That's for sure. So, I had a Leaf prospect on my Facebook, like my personal Facebook. And I once saw a picture of another Leaf prospect. Hold on, did you add him or did he add you? I don't remember. It was years ago.
Starting point is 01:01:59 I don't know. I don't know. Look, being honest, I probably added him. Okay. But he commented on it. That's not the point. You know how sometimes you see someone comment on something and it pops up in your feed even though you're not friends with that person?
Starting point is 01:02:10 This person was wearing, I don't know, let's say 56. But he posted the picture like, hey, here's me in a Leaf uniform. The comment was, 56? Oh, I bet you're going to make the team out of camp. Camp numbers, man. They're ugly for a reason They're ugly for a reason But god
Starting point is 01:02:32 When he plays his first NHL game People are going to want a Matthews jersey And they're going to want to know what friggin number to have on it Better be 34 It better be 34 I sure hope it is So 34 can finally be elevated to the level of excellence Where it should have always been
Starting point is 01:02:49 You know how many Leaf fans want to buy You're right Shut up Don't make fun of me Don't make fun of James You do have a Reimer jersey, right? No You don't?
Starting point is 01:03:02 No What kind of fan are you? He has lots of dangle jerseys I bet he does, yeah He's got a couch made of a dangle jersey It's a chair How long you play for the Leafs, Steve? My whole life
Starting point is 01:03:15 Now that's a jersey foul You know, James Reimer? How is that a jersey foul? It's a jersey foul for you personally I have a James Reimer That'd be like me not having a Doug Gilmore jersey I have a James Reimer hockey figure that I paid $60 for. Don't you tell me I don't have a James Reimer jersey.
Starting point is 01:03:31 Did you pay for that at the height of the James Reimer market? It's a rare jersey. No, it's a rare figure they only made a certain number of. Don't laugh at me! And my feelings! You paid $60 for a jersey. I'm sure everybody's going to want that. I paid for it!
Starting point is 01:03:45 With all the money I saved and all the free shit I've got at them! The fruits of my free shit getting labor! Why did you pay so much? Eat it! Why did you pay so much? Because I love him! And now he's gone! Jesse, you know, when the day comes...
Starting point is 01:04:04 You think I don't know that? When the market on James Reimer... Rare figurines. I don't love this. Your vote's coming in, Steve. So, when you resell that in 15 years, and you make back your $60, I think it's going to be good.
Starting point is 01:04:26 I can't wait to get your wedding invite out and just respond, go fuck yourself. I can't wait. I can't wait. Do you own any other expensive figurines? I have a Darby Hendrickson rare figurine.
Starting point is 01:04:42 Jim Carver's better than Darby Hendrickson! Darby Hendrickson did not just sign a five year contract with the Florida Panthers! How much did your Matt Stajan figurine cost? I don't have a Matt Stajan figure. He is still playing, by the way. He's had a hell of a career.
Starting point is 01:04:59 Don't you sell me the name of Matt Stachin. Is that $45? No. I'd pay more than that. I got this wicked Dimitri Christich card. By the way... Did you get a Matt Finn one? Oh, good one, good one.
Starting point is 01:05:16 He never even played in the NHL, Jesse. Steve, do you want to tell the class about your latest purchase? You didn't tell the class about your latest purchase You can do it in the ultimate warrior voice if you want My latest purchase Your doll
Starting point is 01:05:31 It's not a fucking doll It's a figure It's a doll You didn't buy your latest one I thought your mother picked that one up Oh the card The Phil Kessel card She got me a Phil Kessel card
Starting point is 01:05:47 That's nice Acceptable I bought a Josh Donaldson figure And I also bought a Team North America Aaron Ekblad figure From Toys R Us Which was Which I wasn't that embarrassed to do
Starting point is 01:06:05 Until they asked me If I wanted a gift receipt Which I did not need Because I was not giving this to a child I was giving it to myself These two figures combined by the way Were less than $60 I was going to say how much did you pay for your not rare
Starting point is 01:06:23 Aaron Eckblad. They were $20 each. Why Aaron Eckblad? Because I... You know my weird thing that I do where I have a picture with someone and then I put the figure underneath them? I have a picture with Aaron Eckblad. Okay, okay. Hold on. Hold on. So Jesse. Jesse.
Starting point is 01:06:39 Fuck you. Fuck you both. Steve paid for a rare... Steve just threw his hat at me. A rare James Reimer figurine. But the not rare, only gonna wear this jersey once Aaron Eckblad
Starting point is 01:06:54 probably going to the Hall of Fame I know that's a bit early that's not how rarity works Adam they only made a certain amount of the fucking things
Starting point is 01:07:01 what about that do you get go ahead and try to go buy a James Reimer figure oh are they hard to find yeah that's why
Starting point is 01:07:09 it's so expensive I think the point I think there's a lot of people looking for them I think that's the point is desirability I think James Reimer's mother probably
Starting point is 01:07:16 yeah aunt, uncle and Steve Dangle either Dave either Fess Chuck You guys are bullies You could not go much lower than that by the way That's a hell of a name to call someone
Starting point is 01:07:29 I have a Vesa Toskala figure That I bought for $4 Don't you tell me No no no calling me Vestchuk I said that's a hell of a name to call someone Right The Vesa Toskala at $4 I'd be like Yeah it's a pretty square deal
Starting point is 01:07:44 I'd buy that and then give it to Steve If I didn't have that figure I would buy it again today I would. The James Reimer one? Yes. Okay, what's the max you would pay for that? $1,000.
Starting point is 01:08:01 I don't think I've seen Jesse laugh like this in a long time. That is the definition of fuck you money. I would buy it for $1,000 just to say fuck you to the both of you. How dare you? How dare you? It's James. It's my James. It's Jim.
Starting point is 01:08:17 It's my Jim Jimmy. And by the way, April Reimer, if you're listening And we know you have from time to time She has turned this off long ago Because I've just been swearing for at least 10 minutes now I'm sure she's heard all those words before Let me just say that none of this is an indictment on James Reimer The person or the player he was for the Leafs
Starting point is 01:08:35 He should have always been the starter But I don't even know if James Reimer would pay $60 for his own figure, man No, he wouldn't Because he would give that to starving kids or some charity because he was an amazing human being. Wow, so they could eat it. That's good.
Starting point is 01:08:51 I'm sure he'd give that to a starving child. Here, here's... The kids are going to eat money. Or a figure. Whatever you were saying. Would he give them a framed picture of himself too? Be like, here, look, I know you're starving. He's not Adam West.
Starting point is 01:09:05 He doesn't have pictures of himself in his trunk that he signs for $20. He's a magic angel robot from Winnipeg. And if they weren't in the Atlantic Division, I would be cheering for the Florida Panthers to win a Stanley Cup. Just to show you what's what Just to show you what's what
Starting point is 01:09:20 I can't wait until James Rivers is Stanley Cup champion I can't fucking wait He was close with the Sharks If they had him and that instead of Jones They would have won I know that's not true But I said it Fuck
Starting point is 01:09:38 Okay if you keep moving around the mic like that People are going to show off the show People are still listening That was very You know we haven't had a good one of those Like I think all summer We've always had people on we've been very well behaved Yeah because you guys were pretending to be my friends
Starting point is 01:09:55 All summer Okay so we have a couple more things to get to Bullshit I don't want to do them Before the end of the show here So here's the first thing you need to know Is that Fifty Shades of Coal Will be making a comeback Oh dear
Starting point is 01:10:12 Now I was going to do it today I was going to spring it on you Because E.L. James, the author of Fifty Shades of Grey Released Because she's doing this Get ready for this She's releasing because she's got A hundred shades of grey
Starting point is 01:10:25 So much new material There's four books in the Fifty Shades of Grey series But the series is done It's already been released It's like Harry Potter of BDSM What could she release now guys? Yes it is Have you heard the plot?
Starting point is 01:10:41 No it's terrible What could E.L. James be releasing now though that now that the story's already been told. What do you guys think? Any guesses? Any guesses in the room? A $60... No, actually. Give me a real guess. Real guess. What is she releasing? Yeah. How would it tie into this story?
Starting point is 01:10:56 Oh, God. Is it... Is it an object? Is it an object? Steve. Jesse, go ahead. That's not Steve. That's the other one. It's an object? It's not an object. No, no, no. She's releasing another book. What's the book about? Oh, she's releasing another book. Oh, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 01:11:12 I'm in a blind rage, alright. It's about... A coloring book. It's not a coloring book. It's a novel. It's a novel. That's actually a good guess. No, what's the theme of the novel?
Starting point is 01:11:21 What's the story? What's the plot? I'm going to go with aggressive banging. Okay, but... Okay. All right, aggressive banging. Steve's correct. Yes, Jesse, what do you got for me?
Starting point is 01:11:34 Like, what's the idea? What's the continuation of a story that's already completed? What was all the other ones about? It's animals this time. Oh, no. No. The actual answer is She's now
Starting point is 01:11:46 Fifty Shades of Ney Oh my god Wow Fifty Shades of Ney Awful Why is this person still writing books? She is writing it How much animal bang did you see at the Toronto Zoo?
Starting point is 01:12:03 So much animal bang None Oh my god I was driving up between Calgary and Edmonton Once and we saw these two horses Getting it on in the middle of the winter on the side of the highway Yeah, Calgary to Edmonton It's a boring ride, but man, wow That was hilarious
Starting point is 01:12:19 They made the most of it It was hilarious I'll never forget that horse appendage And you know what one I'm talking about Swinging in the air, trying to properly connect I've told this story before An elephant took a dump Into its own pee
Starting point is 01:12:35 Five minutes into a half hour Zoomobile tour I didn't have to talk for the rest of the tour People were killing themselves laughing They were doubled over crying laughing I couldn't hear myself on the speaker Over them laughing That's funny Over 20 minutes I didn't have to say a friggin word
Starting point is 01:12:51 No 50 Shades Darker is what it'll be called And It will be Because the original novel was from Anastasia's Perspective she's the female protagonist This one will be from Christian's perspective So she's going to retell The story from the other guy
Starting point is 01:13:08 The whole thing So he's going to have his own four books I don't know if he's going to have four Maybe just this one I don't know But it's a That's weird So
Starting point is 01:13:18 Gentlemen Fifty Shades of Coal Will eventually Make a comeback And it will be more From Bob Cole's perspective You could argue Because it's a male perspective
Starting point is 01:13:26 This time A little bit different Has this woman Written anything else In her life? Do you know how this all started? No This was
Starting point is 01:13:33 You know what fan fiction is? Yeah Wait really? You know what fan fiction is? It was fan fiction? Fan fiction for what series? Guess It was online fan fiction
Starting point is 01:13:41 Bingo Twilight It was Twilight Fan fiction Why is school so expensive? Isn't that bananas? This is crazy She's a gazillionaire
Starting point is 01:13:55 What the fuck are you all spending 25 grand plus for an education for? You should be on Reddit right now I don't know what you're doing here Isn't that nuts? Twilight fan fiction Is she like 19? Why are you on Tumblr so much? I'm becoming a millionaire
Starting point is 01:14:10 No she's not Actually she's a I believe she's a Middle aged woman And she had Some She based some of it on If I can remember correctly
Starting point is 01:14:19 She did have A bit of an affair Herself with a man And it's funny Because they actually Showed a picture of the guy And he's like Nothing like she describes
Starting point is 01:14:27 Christian Grey He's like just a normal Looking dude Like but And he's not rich It's Danny DeVito Yeah but she was like Sorry
Starting point is 01:14:34 She's like I like the BDS It's Danny DeVito She's like I like All the BDSM stuff But I'm gonna make you Supermodel And a billionaire And now we have a story
Starting point is 01:14:43 Anyway it's a It's gonna be fun when that comes back Now the next thing We have a bit of a Oh boy Can't wait Russell Martin That's great guys but you know several days from now
Starting point is 01:14:58 When people listen to this they'll know that Russell Martin Had a home run Tuesday night He walked up to the plate His large wood protruding out of his hands And he swings Sorry I was trying to do a dirty Bob Colt baseball thing
Starting point is 01:15:15 Look You work on your material You figure it out And then eventually It comes out mediocre I have a really good debate for us But I'm going to save it For the next podcast
Starting point is 01:15:25 Because it's so good But we've already had A good debate James Reimer Best or bestest Here's our question Alright So Jesse has
Starting point is 01:15:32 What Invested in some Incredible tickets Oh Let's talk about No but I have a better one For next time There's a tease
Starting point is 01:15:40 I have an amazing hockey debate That will, I believe, engulf the show I have a great debate next time The best debate you've ever seen People will love it You're going to love it I like that People are going to love it
Starting point is 01:15:53 Sorry, I was doing this I was doing the wide kind of You'll see this on the YouTube The Donald Trump hands Yeah, no, he does this thing Your hands have to be much smaller Yes Yeah, he's a fish
Starting point is 01:16:02 He's a So Jesse Yes You bought tickets in April, right? Yeah, even before that Before the season started, March-ish, as soon as the tickets for the Jays came out. Now, this applies to all sports fans, because it's a matter of, do you make a profit, or do you go to the game? So, I have tickets to the Blue Jays' second-last home game of the year.
Starting point is 01:16:25 They're playing the New York Yankees, who are currently battling them for a playoff spot. It happens the—it's also Toque Day. The game is already sold out. Oh, so you get a free toque. And I'll get a free toque if I go. There are 100-level seats. I paid a decent price for them. I paid face value.
Starting point is 01:16:45 But if you go on StubHub, one ticket in that section is already at $109. And I definitely didn't pay $109 for one ticket. How much less than $109 did you pay? I think face value is around $70, $60-ish. All right, if you sell these tickets today, you're making $50 or $60. about. Yeah. Now, the Jays are currently two games behind the Red Sox. And if they win tonight, which
Starting point is 01:17:10 I'm not going to dangle jinx them. They're too close. They're too close. Tampa's not having a great year, so hopefully they do. They should win tonight. They need to win tonight. The division race and the wildcard race will come down to the last few days of the season. Right. And the Yankees currently are only three games behind the Jays
Starting point is 01:17:27 in the wildcard. Two back of Baltimore for the second spot in the wildcard. There you go. So, this is very, very interesting because the Yankees and Jays could be battling it out if not for each other's playoff position then someone else's. So it's going to be anytime New York comes to town
Starting point is 01:17:43 they bring New Yorkers. And it's so much fun in the Rogers Center. And there's just a lot of Yankees fans in Toronto. There are. The Jays were so bad for so long that there are a ton of Red Sox fans. That's why they used to call it Fenway North. I don't know if they still do. And Yankees fans. One other wrinkle into this $109
Starting point is 01:17:59 price. That is US dollars. Oh. Ooh. So that's add another 30% on the price we just talked about, which I'm not even going to attempt. No. Now, Jesse, your conundrum is what? I would like to go to the game. You want to go to the game? Because it's going to be a great game.
Starting point is 01:18:17 But you could sell these tickets, right? For $143 Canadian. And let's say it goes up by 50 bucks a ticket at least, right? You think it's going to go up another 50 bucks a ticket? I'm sure. another one. Especially if it's a tight race. Let's assume it's a tight race. You could take that money and you could buy
Starting point is 01:18:37 playoff tickets. I could. What does Jesse do? See, now wait. Okay. So he's made a what? Let's assume $70 investment. Yes. He gets
Starting point is 01:18:53 $150 for the ticket. Is that per ticket? Yeah. Oh, so you bought two. Yeah, I have a pair of tickets. You have a pair of tickets, so you're making So you'd be able to sell them for $143 right now, Canadian. Yeah. That's right now. Let's wrap it up.
Starting point is 01:19:07 They're going for $109 on Step Up. So $100, so yeah. Because I'm too stupid. So $143 Canadian. So you're basically doubling your price back on both tickets. Yeah. Now wait though. Jay's playoff tickets last year, like in the nosebleeds, were $250 or $300.
Starting point is 01:19:24 I paid $600 and something for two tickets in the $100s. For a pair. For a pair. In the $100s. And the 100s. Yeah, they were good tickets. I just figured if I was going to go, I was going to go. I still was spending like $200 on top of my ticket.
Starting point is 01:19:40 This is what I'm saying. Even if I make $150 on these ones, I still got to spend another $200. If you sold them today, you'd make $100. Yeah. Almost $100 on each ticket, right? Like $700. No, $100 something bucks. I've already stopped paying attention to the numbers.
Starting point is 01:19:54 No, no, no. Pay attention. So if they're $200 Or if they're $150 American a ticket In the next one Then you are basically setting yourself up For 200 level seats In the outfield
Starting point is 01:20:07 That's all dependent on If I get those tickets Do I risk going online at 10am to try and get Jay's playoff tickets But if you don't get them Yes you won't have the experience but you will have some money But you could spend on
Starting point is 01:20:24 The least playoff run Okay, fine In 2019 Raptors Playoff run Yeah Or I get to see the Jays
Starting point is 01:20:35 Right before the playoffs You know what See, I would sell I think I'd sell these tickets Yeah I think I'd sell these tickets But I'd wait Until
Starting point is 01:20:42 Things really built up You gotta make your decision On the Thursday, right? Yeah And it's like, okay It's gonna be People are like Oh my god, New York's
Starting point is 01:20:49 Coming to Toronto I can't miss this series One game back Boom, sell But if they This is Toronto People don't plan things more than 48 hours ahead of them.
Starting point is 01:20:55 Yeah, but if they go on an extreme winning streak and it's not even a contest, then you might want to just go to the game. Okay. You spent $140 for the pair? Yeah, I was around that, yeah. It's pretty damn good. You might want to go to the game.
Starting point is 01:21:12 If it's a tight race, though. It'll basically be a playoff game. And it's going to be a tight race. The Jays and or everyone around them would either have to go on a crazy winning or losing streak in order for it to not be tight. And there's so many teams bunched up that even if one falls
Starting point is 01:21:29 off, it's still a tight race between four other teams. I'd sell the tickets. I'd sell the tickets on the Thursday. It's also Toque Day. Oh, damn. You're getting freaked out. That jacks the price up even more. How much money do you think he could make?
Starting point is 01:21:45 Well, if you're saying it's $143 Canadian Right now, per ticket For one ticket So that's twice So let's just round it up, say $300 for two tickets So I'm making $150
Starting point is 01:22:00 $160 For two tickets, Steve, he paid $140 To sell one ticket He'll get $143 Right now Right now So what you're saying is Jesse He could get $100
Starting point is 01:22:16 And a brand new James Reimer figurine For the tickets he already has in his hands And maybe an Aaron Eckblad Maybe He could get Aaron Eckblad, James Reimer and have $80 Man, the market for James Reimer Rare gear is going to be huge
Starting point is 01:22:33 Especially when he retires Hey, remember the backup goalie The time that the Pittsburgh Remember when Florida was good and they made the conference finals A couple times? That backup goalie I wonder if there's any merch out there for him No, no You know what?
Starting point is 01:22:48 I'm going for the Panthers I'm going for the Panthers we'll see if I alright now I want people's answers on this too I think this is very important by the way
Starting point is 01:22:56 I'm very excited to hear the tweets as we go through our debate and people just tweeting us like midway through which debate which one of eight debates
Starting point is 01:23:05 yeah we've had many debates many many debates the last thing is Steve today can you explain to the audience who is not watching the video
Starting point is 01:23:11 which is in the thousands what you're wearing I got a Super Mario shirt I think I got it from Blue Notes I paid for it Navy blue shorts I got
Starting point is 01:23:25 Some Nike shoes I bought these in Ottawa What are you wearing And this is rare for someone with craniums the size of ours What are you wearing on your cranium Glasses I'm using them to watch the Jays game It's the color red
Starting point is 01:23:41 It's the color red Oh this whole thing I got a Team Canada hat. My second favorite team at the World Cup of Hockey behind North America. And I got it for free when I went to a Team Canada
Starting point is 01:23:57 practice last week in Ottawa. What else Team Canada have you gotten for free thus far? A golf shirt that's way too big. But I'm not going to exchange it because I gave it to Drew Doughty to wear for an interview that we did. Did he sign it? No. Why didn't you?
Starting point is 01:24:13 Because I'm not going to get it because you don't do that when you interview a person. No No You should have got Drew Dowdy to sign your golf shirt And then give it back to you After he wore it I don't know, it's a cool story
Starting point is 01:24:27 It would have been cool if you had something to show people He paid $60 for James Ryan The next day I wore it Doll, by the way, doll Here, you know what? I'll piss off the podcast listeners Here we go I got a hat signed Not this one
Starting point is 01:24:44 Oh, that one? Oh, what are you showing us? I got this exact hat signed So you have a second Team Canada hat Had one What'd you do with it? I got it signed in order to have it as a giveaway on this podcast Oh But
Starting point is 01:24:59 You lost it One of the contest winners So a few people who listened to the podcast Showed up at the Real Sports in Ottawa Oh that's cool To hang out with myself and all the contest winners Amazing Who got to go to the practice
Starting point is 01:25:11 One of the contest winners left their bag with everything in it Their golf shirt, their sweater, their hat, and most importantly, their VIP pass to the practice the next day. One of the guys who wasn't a contest winner who showed up, one of the podcast listeners, had the bag. And he's like, oh, well, I can't take this. Here, Steve. And he alerted me to the lost bag. So I decided as a reward for his nobility, I gave him the signed WWE hat. Wow, that was noble.
Starting point is 01:25:41 Bailey, I think was his name. Bailey? Bailey. Bailey. Okay. Bailey. Dude, wow. That's great.
Starting point is 01:25:47 That's huge. Round of applause for Bailey. Now, so you have the jersey, the golf shirt. What else do you get? You get a sweater, right? Yes. Right. So that's the Team Canada Freak stuff that you've accumulated thus far.
Starting point is 01:25:58 That's the list. Yes. Any other World Cup stuff that you've accumulated? Not yet. Okay. But more coming. I think so. Okay.
Starting point is 01:26:07 So I would just like to show you just something kind of cool here because I have entered free shit territory and got myself a brand new Team Canada jersey. And it's official merch, by the way. It's not some knockoff bullshit.
Starting point is 01:26:27 It's the real deal. It smells real. It looks real. I'm going to put it on. It's by Adidas. Steve, don't you have a cool hoodie? I do have a cool hoodie. I'm putting on my jersey. It's a very cool jersey to the team that North America
Starting point is 01:26:43 is going to beat in the gold medal game. I'm now cheering for Team Canada even though I went with some of Europe. You're wrong. Obviously. Now,
Starting point is 01:26:50 I got this at Breakfast Television and they let me do some of the sports stuff there because it's my other job. They let me do some of the sports stuff there because they know how much I love hockey
Starting point is 01:27:00 which is amazing. So they gave me this jersey and I was like, oh, that's awesome. And then I thought, well, I'm on a podcast of guys and, you know,
Starting point is 01:27:11 I've just entered the free zone territory the free stuffs territory and I thought but there's a member who maybe hasn't. And so at that point I said, is there an extra one? Jesse Blake. What?
Starting point is 01:27:25 Oh my god! Oh thank you! What a, what a, what a Jesse's rubbing the jersey on Steve. What? That's a very nice double XL jersey you got there tall man. Actually, it's a medium.
Starting point is 01:27:43 Yeah. It'll fit him. Oh, you finally get him free shit and it doesn't fit, imagine. Yeah, it'll fit him. He's putting it on like it's draft day. Oh, wow, it's a perfect fit. Oh, you skinny fucks.
Starting point is 01:27:57 Wow. Look at how handsome he looks. Now, I have been holding onto that jersey. Free shit. Free shit. I figured, and that's not a slide against you, Steve. I just figured it would be nice
Starting point is 01:28:07 if the entire podcast was able to do free shit together so we are free shit harmony right here this is the nicest thing that's ever happened to me this made my life
Starting point is 01:28:19 you just wait until next show when I give you my James Reimer figure and I throw it in the garbage no shit I would never give you
Starting point is 01:28:32 that figure and I mail it to Guam so people can I can show them for a hundred dollars Because it has accumulated fucking worth and value over the years, now it's worth probably like $65. Shhh, shut up and do Guam. Fuck Adam, fuck Jesse, fuck Guam, fuck all of you.
Starting point is 01:28:55 Fuck your jerseys. Fuck your jersey and your jersey, especially your jersey. Now Steve, I figured you were going to compile something along the lines... Oh shit, is Berkshire calling us back? Don't throw your free hat at me Free hat Free hat Mr. Hat
Starting point is 01:29:18 So anyway, I just wanted that to happen I have been holding that jersey, by the way For a month We first got these a month ago and I've been waiting and waiting Because we had Kipper on and I forgot last week So I finally got the chance Would you buy those jerseys in London? Oh, because I didn't
Starting point is 01:29:36 It's a callback Hey, I've been back to London and I still haven't gotten you shit You're not getting your shit from London Just so you know, people can stop asking They still do ask from time to time They should ask all the time I deserve free shit From London? Maybe a third time's a charm
Starting point is 01:29:52 It better be Alright, so now that we have all been free shitted Shall we do the press conference? Holy fuck, we're still doing the show? The Presser SDP I think we've done something along those lines before, but people are always asking. Can you punch Adam in the face?
Starting point is 01:30:17 Okay, yes, for you. Visiting Toronto. Okay, fine. What should I do besides the Hockey Hall of Fame? We've had this question before, and you know, the thing that sucks about Toronto is there isn't a lot of shit to do that you don't have to pay for.
Starting point is 01:30:29 What I would recommend, though... Wow. No, no, but in New York, it's like, oh, you can go see this, or you can go walk that, and Toronto's like, well, what do you got in the aquarium? The aquarium's so expensive. It is really expensive.
Starting point is 01:30:40 That's what I mean. To go up the CN Tower, it's like $30, which is like $10 American. Well, and then they shaft me when they asked me on Twitter by going, other than the Hockeyola food. I'm like, well, now I can't say the Hockeyola food. Now, okay, so I always try to think,
Starting point is 01:30:57 what does Toronto have that other cities do not? Well, other cities have an aquarium. Other cities have this, have that, have that. So we've narrowed it down to the CN Tower and the Hockey Hall of Fame. I would recommend this. Or a Chase game or a Leafs game or a Raptors game. Yeah, because the thing is, a lot of people, when they go on vacation, who brings their workout gear with them?
Starting point is 01:31:21 But there are actually some pretty cool obstacle courses, and we went to one. Oh, Pursuit? Yeah, which was really fun. I went, I played trampoline. How many cities have those? I don't know, trampoline dodgeball The thing is, are there things to see There are a lot of amazing restaurants
Starting point is 01:31:39 If you want to spend the money To get the food and the drinks And whatever We're doing a terrible job selling the city But truly You have to spend money to enjoy Toronto Yes But you know what, any major cities like that now
Starting point is 01:31:54 Panago Pizza in Whitby London, Ottawa Yeah but that's too far Lauren Jarvis Lauren Jarvis Yeah I already said that When you were listening I'm sorry
Starting point is 01:32:05 There's one in Libvidge There's one in Libvidge There's at least one in Libvidge There's only one That's at least The Waterfront's beautiful When it's not frigid $60 James Ryder
Starting point is 01:32:16 Fuck you I would definitely go to Real Sports Just cause it's fun Yeah If you're from out of town You should see What a two story
Starting point is 01:32:25 TV inside looks like Monstrosity Craziness Yeah it's great guys we gotta do better than this come on Young Dundas Square
Starting point is 01:32:33 is cool to see if you get to go to the Jack Astor's on the you're not coming from out of town to go to a Jack Astor's you always take a walk
Starting point is 01:32:41 through the etc yeah yeah the other thing is the Jack's has the one thing the Jack's has is the patio
Starting point is 01:32:49 I wouldn't go to Jack's but I go to the patio because that patio that overlooks Young Dundas is sick I haven't been there in a few years need to go
Starting point is 01:32:58 My thing, like I said, is the cool restaurants. Go to the rooftop of the Thompson Hotel. Our food scene. And you'll see, you'll have some great views. Yes. That sort of thing. Rocks. Our food scene rocks.
Starting point is 01:33:09 We need to do that. We need to go there. I met Ron McClain there on Sunday. Oh, you fucker. Yeah, you went to the Hell in Canada party. How does that not come up yet? Yeah, Jesse met Ron McClain. Inside the park home run.
Starting point is 01:33:18 Let's go. Sorry. Anyway, Jesse, you met Ron McClain. Ron McClain name-dropped Shawn Mendes on Sunday. Does he know him? No. but he listens to them so I thought that was interesting
Starting point is 01:33:30 before we get to we should have had Ron on the show on the on the Adam Wilde show that would have been cool by the way speaking of which we should probably mention that the Adam Wilde show
Starting point is 01:33:39 is now the Adam Wilde show instead of Blake and Wilde yeah Blake and Wilde Blake unfortunately left the show but in a good punched Adam in the face when she left
Starting point is 01:33:48 we fought we fought so much no no no it was honestly it was she got engaged and there's some some developments in her life
Starting point is 01:33:53 so in case anybody wants to know There's really no drama there, I'm sorry Sometimes people just move on from their workplace And that's what happens, so that's what happened That was sad No, before we get to Ron McLean Oh, are we not going to do that? We already talked about it
Starting point is 01:34:08 I was going to ask why Shawn Mendes can't pronounce anything Correct me It's almost like he rolls his R's No, Adam Potty, he says potty What am I doing to your finger right now? You're touching my finger I'm wetting your finger?
Starting point is 01:34:24 You're poking my finger No, no, no, you had it right the first time Touching my finger Yeah, but you're saying it funny I'm tai-ching your finger That's what he does What is it? What is that?
Starting point is 01:34:34 That song, every time it comes on the radio I want to kick out the windshield Which is Treat You Better? Yes But I've tried not to learn the name And now I know it, thanks I know I can treat you better I would like you
Starting point is 01:34:47 Fucking, how many syllables is that? It's not teach It's teach And then that biggie doesn't really pronounce the end of it so much much we're from the same place sean what the fuck what is it what is it it's like he's trying to it's like he's halfway through no no no we're gonna get youtube yeah well i just cut this out the video if you really want ah no no no no no no because then itunes
Starting point is 01:35:19 you know this is bx no itunes is okay like oh it's like it's like you're talking over it and If you're doing a little clip of it, it's fine. Oh, yeah, because no one's heard this fucking song. Yeah. No, it's the thing. It's an algorithm that notices it. It's not a people. But YouTube's too good with it.
Starting point is 01:35:32 Yeah. It's too good. I mean, the story of how YouTube started small and became this big thing is very titching. Titching. Sorry, sorry. Am I saying that too much? Am I saying that too much? You know that every time someone hears a Shawn Mendes song on the radio from now on.
Starting point is 01:35:49 Who is ruined? Shawn Mendes. People are never going to be able to forget this Good, I hope I ruined his career By saying that He's the nicest guy By the way, did I tell you this? I can't wait for his remix of Cascada's song
Starting point is 01:36:06 Every Time We Taich Every Time We Taich This failing You are from Pickering The fuck Anyway the first time remember his first
Starting point is 01:36:19 his first song which was life life of the party what is it life I don't even know how to say it
Starting point is 01:36:25 but he would say it's not even life he would say life properly but life of the party life of the party party like it other
Starting point is 01:36:32 not life of the anyway the first time he said he heard that song on the radio he was sitting in our studio it was at
Starting point is 01:36:41 Kiss 92.5 on my radio show my little radio show that's so Taiching that is exactly the family guy bit where Stewie's pronouncing cool whip.
Starting point is 01:36:49 Cool whip. Cool whip. Am I saying something wrong? That's so true though, man. Wow. You've hit on something. Every, I hope I ruined that song.
Starting point is 01:36:59 I hope this gets 20,000 listens and all 20,000 of you spread it to all your friends. And I fucked that up for all of you. And there's one less piece of CanCon
Starting point is 01:37:09 you have to play, Adam Wilde. Is our new goal to take down Shawn Mendes? Are we trying to ruin his career? SDP versus Shawn Mendes? Yeah, yeah, fuck it. Let's do it.
Starting point is 01:37:20 Let's do it. New direction. Next question. What was the last question? Something to do in Toronto. How do... Oh, hey, so there's some stuff and some things. Make Mark Shawn Mendes.
Starting point is 01:37:31 Out of Matthews, Nylander, and Marner, which one's going to be the biggest fan favorite? I mean, Matthews projects to be the best, so I would assume the best one. I'm going to go with Nylander. I was about to say that. You think? Have you seen his Instagram?
Starting point is 01:37:50 He's so dreamy. I didn't say who's going to be the cutest. No. Now, wait, though. Wait, though. He's so charismatic, too. Yeah, it's done. Knowing Canada, you're going to pick the Swede?
Starting point is 01:38:02 You're going to pick the American? Okay, hold up. Marner's Canadian. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. I love that none of us has mentioned Marner.
Starting point is 01:38:08 Also, Matthew's on Team North America, so he's like half Canadian now. Can I please have the floor for just a second here? No. Toronto Blue Jays made the playoffs for the first time last year in how many years? 23? Since 1993. There you go. So it's been a while.
Starting point is 01:38:22 Yes. 22 years. Who was the most popular player on the team? Josh Donaldson. I thought it was Joey Bates. It's Mini-Muri Kawasaki. The worst player on the team. How is Shawn Mendes saying Munanori Kawasaki?
Starting point is 01:38:40 Probably the way I just did. Monday night, Kawasaki. It was Kawasaki. Kawasaki had been the most popular player on that team for like two years. And he was the worst player on the team. I don't think it matters how good the player is popularity-wise. Listen, I think we've seen some players in Leafs' past that have maybe not been the most skilled be very popular players.
Starting point is 01:39:03 A man named Ty. Well, I think we are going through the wrong three names then. Because who's going to be the Leafs' Mooney? It's not going to be one of those three. Who's going to be the Leafs' Ty Domi? Which I'm cool with. We need it. We've wanted it to be Uncle Leo.
Starting point is 01:39:20 So we've narrowed it down to who will have the most entertaining Instagram. Nylander is going to win. Nylander, fine. Nylander. Young DiCaprio. By the way, did you see him? Did you see Brooks Light's post yesterday? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:33 So Kapanen and Nylander went over to Brooks Light's house to watch his fiancée, Julianne Hough, and her brother, Derek Hough, compete at Dancing with the Stars. So all three of them were just watching Dancing with the Stars. Just a very cool post And they're both like Kapanen and Nylander Look very happy about it Oh there it is
Starting point is 01:39:51 I could do anything Look at how good looking That man is That's not fair Brooks Lyke too God he's handsome That's who I thought You were talking about
Starting point is 01:39:58 Brooks Lyke is just Watching his wife dance With his kids in the room Yeah Doesn't it look like He's watching Nylander Yeah And his older brother
Starting point is 01:40:07 Kasperi How come Kasperi Looks so much older Kasperi's one of those guys That he'll meet He'll reach an age and he'll just stop aging. You think?
Starting point is 01:40:16 Because he's like Steve Martin. Steve Martin's been the same age for 20 years. But when Steve Martin was younger, he looked older. Now he just looks Steve Martin. It's like, you ever seen that meme of Lindsay Lohan? And it shows how she's aged during the years and over her there's the caption cocaine. But then they have James Earl...
Starting point is 01:40:32 No, not James Earl Jones. Who is... Who is friggin' John Luke Picard? Patrick Stewart? Patrick Stewart, yeah. Yeah. And they have him 20 years ago and him now And the caption over him
Starting point is 01:40:45 Is Earl Grey Tea It's true Holy smokes I almost forgot his name Come on He's wearing Okay so Jesse's got a picture up now Where this is where
Starting point is 01:40:54 Nylander Is wearing If you were drunk You would think that was Miley Cyrus It's a Michael Jordan shirt You're right Ripped jeans He's got the Harry's
Starting point is 01:41:01 He's got the Bulls shirt And a fuzzy jacket A hairy jacket It's a jacket that could use a shave I would love that jacket It's a nice jacket See you could pull that off Jesse could pull that off
Starting point is 01:41:10 I saw a jacket in I was at the Bay On Saturday How much is it? It cost $800. I almost bought it. Whoa. Because it was furry, but I didn't buy it because I don't have $800.
Starting point is 01:41:19 Was it real fur? It was real fur. Oh, damn. We are going to have some people angry at us. Are you saying that? That's okay. I didn't buy it because I couldn't afford it. You entertained it, sir.
Starting point is 01:41:30 But I would have. You animal cruelist. If I have learned anything from hockey over the last few months, Nylander's Instagram is proof that he's going to be a Nashville Predator within the next two years. Oh my goodness, look at those abs. Is that his girlfriend? No, probably not.
Starting point is 01:41:49 Congrats, sis. That would be his sister. Who can also probably friggin' squat like 500, 600 pounds. Doing a quick count here, he has eight total abs. Wow. He's got the full eight.
Starting point is 01:42:04 I've never seen one of my abs. In my life, I've never seen one of my abs. I've had the top two before. Have you? Yeah, just the top two. Oh, I've never even gotten there. Yeah, it's hard. It's hard.
Starting point is 01:42:14 I'm trying to get him back. Me too. Me too, man. So I guess we creepily came up with our answer. Nylander. Nylander.
Starting point is 01:42:23 Nylander. Now the hockey the hockey player the hockey fans the hockey hockey fans will be like Austin Matthews all the way.
Starting point is 01:42:31 And I think I will be too. No, I think they'll be Mitch Marner. Really? Good old Canadian kid. Oh. You mean like
Starting point is 01:42:39 the right wing conservative Rob Ford was good for Toronto people? Joe from Burlington Will be on Yeah Mitch Marner all day The new age hockey fan
Starting point is 01:42:46 The new age like stats fan Is going to be an Austin Matthews fan And then the fan fan People who just enjoy The sport And Don't get too serious
Starting point is 01:42:54 About it Who actually have fun Nylander We just made a great pie chart No We sure did Here's how Coach's Corner
Starting point is 01:43:01 Is going to go Matthews scores A thrilling Overtime winner And freaks out Cherry Talks about The brilliant
Starting point is 01:43:10 Canadian coach Mike Babcock and the effect he has had On this young American player William Nylander scores an overtime winner Don Cherry talks about The Canadian winger Or centerman or defenseman Who starts the play for Nylander
Starting point is 01:43:25 Mitch Marner scores the overtime winner Ah he just talks about Mitch Marner He just talks about Mitchie Marmon the London Knights Oh they keep the hunters They keep turning them out Anyway here are my thoughts On Colin Kaepernick
Starting point is 01:43:41 No! Done, what the fuck? Jesse, go ahead. Adam, Steve, and Jesse. It's from Dart Hacking. I think this guy might be a bud. This guy sounds like... A bod.
Starting point is 01:43:58 That was a good one. Steve. Yes. It's a Steve Nagle podcast. Just wanted you to jump back in here. Fair enough. Did Joey Batts get on base? I think he did.
Starting point is 01:44:07 Yeah, he was. Nice. What is the biggest land mammal You could take in a fight That's a great question Okay anything Anything with hooves you're fucked Oh anything with antlers
Starting point is 01:44:21 You're not beating a deer And you think you could Look up deer attacking hunters Oh my god It sucks I'm gonna go with one of the worst things you could be killed by Because that shit's not happening fast They have knives on their face
Starting point is 01:44:37 Here's the thing. I don't even think that I could take most dogs. I think you could beat up a pit bull. Even like a 90-pound pit bull. A pit bull? Like a 90-pound pit bull, I think you could take it. Oh, it would be a fight to the guy. No, a 90-pound pit bull?
Starting point is 01:44:51 No way. Adam Wilde versus a pit bull. I'm losing that. I'm betting on Adam. I will tell you that I am not running into battle against a pit bull. I will place a bet. I'll guarantee you I will win the fight. I can climb shit.
Starting point is 01:45:02 It can't. That is how I will win the fight. I will just metapod Harden up there. Battle to the death. Are there ways to climb? Jesus. No. Here's a question.
Starting point is 01:45:16 Why would you ever want to do this? So it's ancient Rome, and we're Christians, and we're being thrown in with wild animals. What animals can we take? Do we have tools? People still fight bulls these days, you know, in Spain. Yeah, and lose. Yeah. Also, that's fucked up.
Starting point is 01:45:34 But, um, very fucked up. That is hilarious. You know what's messed up about mammals is, like, there's kind of a pretty big jump. Like, after, like, dog is kind of the biggest of, like, the little tier. And then you, like, jump to deer pretty much, right? Steve, you worked at the zoo. I didn't just stare at the animals and go, fuck you, I can take you. You know what?
Starting point is 01:46:00 I have seen monkeys up close in a monkey enclosure. We couldn't even take them. Those things are terrifying By the way, Jesse's crying Jesse's actually been crying Oh, fuck They stranded three Base is loaded
Starting point is 01:46:14 Edwin, the guy you want up Jesse is actually crying Like a hyena If it's not a huge one You might luck into a win But I'm gonna go with 90% of the time you're dying A hyena Is the same as a pit bull, man
Starting point is 01:46:33 they're pretty vicious yeah I don't know man it's listen unless I got something like a if it's hand to hand
Starting point is 01:46:40 I'm toast maybe a bunny I whoop a bunny I just punt that thing you just threaten how big of a bunny how big of a bunny there's a pretty big
Starting point is 01:46:50 ass bunny out there my answer is fuck your question yeah hey I have a question dart hacking I have a question I have another question
Starting point is 01:46:56 Steve can you explain to everybody what happened at the you're going to a world cup of hockey event Friday morning.
Starting point is 01:47:05 Oh my gosh. Oh, this upcoming? Yeah. Yeah, Steve. Aren't you? Potentially. On the invite. There was an invite.
Starting point is 01:47:15 Oh. So I'm going to the fan village. Yeah. Which is in the distillery district. Nice part of Toronto. Hey, you know what? Person visiting Toronto, you should visit the distillery district. You should.
Starting point is 01:47:26 It's my hood. You should check it out. Yeah, there's a lot of movies get filmed there. I remember the beginning scene where Magneto bends the fence. um in i think x-men 2 that was filmed in the distillery district um i got an invite to an event to play bubble hockey oh that's cool yeah big event big bubble hockey uh and then i got an email after i said i was interested in going uh asking hey invite your friend jesse too
Starting point is 01:47:56 Now if you're wondering what I left out of that email Nothing They just asked for Jesse They probably meant Adam Yeah but they don't know that So I didn't say anything And just said sure and invited Jesse And he wasn't supposed to tell you
Starting point is 01:48:16 But then he did And now you know I'm just Were you gonna just cut me out And then see how I reacted Yes that is absolutely what I was going to do Well it's funny because I got invited To host something at that same village That night
Starting point is 01:48:30 And I'm going to do it How do you out free invite Free shit the guy who's on TV Radio and internet every two seconds The male Jackie Redmond I can't get rid of you That's who I also saw On the weekend
Starting point is 01:48:46 Who else did you invite on the podcast Jesse you invited Tim and Sid You invited Jackie Redmond Ron McLean You didn't invite Ron McLean. He's not going to come on. He probably said yes anyway, though, because he's Canadian. He's big enough that he could be like, I'm not coming on your shitty show.
Starting point is 01:49:04 You know that. That's the thing that is funny about Canadians. Americans would be like, no, I don't want to be on your podcast. Canadians would be like, yes, but they'll never show up. All right. I will come on your podcast if I am impressed with any five-second segment that I choose at random. Okay, I'll give you one more shot. Okay, one more time.
Starting point is 01:49:24 What's the largest mammal you could take in a fight? It's true. So anyway, so I says to Jesse, I says, why don't you come with me? And I didn't know unbeknownst to Steve that we were going to this event. I'm like, you can you need we need to do somebody to do social for Kiss 92.5. So we can so I can do this event because it's a Rogers event and I'm introducing people and I can't say who because it's not been announced yet. And I get to leave work early, which is cool. So Jesse, you simultaneously
Starting point is 01:49:55 Got invited by Steve to one thing And me to another And told neither that neither wasn't invited Exactly Jesse is an evil freaking genius That's my point That's all I want to say I'm going to be there all day
Starting point is 01:50:06 Yeah And I'm just going to hang out And you guys won't even know that I saw both of you You're going to get bombed at the distillery You know, I have to say I'm really sad that this show is over Because that was so much fun That was so, so much fun
Starting point is 01:50:19 And yet, I feel like it's about time. Before we started, I said we should have went four hours just to make up for everything. Next week. We almost made it.
