Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, this show is brought to you by Manscaped. Manscaped. If you're a man and you need to be scaped, and actually Manscaped is for anybody of any gender, manscaped.com slash dangle. You still got the jersey, huh? I do. I haven't lost.
Starting point is 00:00:15 Free shipping, 20% off. Go Devils. This is Steve Dangle Podcast. Powered by Sports Interaction. Canada's sports book. the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wilde and jesse blake by the time you listen to this show you could be listening or watching the the leafs lose to the almost 14 straight win devils and i say almost because it hasn't happened as of this
Starting point is 00:00:48 recording well the game hasn't gone to overtime yet that's right yeah it's fair enough right what we tell you goes over time it's over it's it's literally over time it's time to be over yeah um but we got a title yeah it's time we can't talk about tonight's we will talk about tonight's game because it's exciting but we can't talk about tonight's game without telling you a little bit about the the islanders leafs talking a little bit about that situation i know a lot of people would like to forget it but i think there were some really good points that steve you made in the lfr and i want to start with always do the leafs beating themselves the least beating themselves and uh you quoted one of the best shows on tv from apple tv uh i forget the ted
Starting point is 00:01:33 lasso ted lasso oh yeah and they have the yips case of the yips sorry there's too many services right okay fair enough i was like yellowstone's not on that that one are you still watching yellowstone yeah man what is with that show because i need pensive mountain stairs and tense boardroom moments there you go okay so for all of the uh uh powerful women to talk in strangely aggressive and vaguely sexual ways okay fair enough yeah the show is really starting to jump the shark it is oh it jumped the shark after the fourth season i was like okay this is done now yeah where they go and they just attack some people in the hills and then nothing happens local militia would just kill them kill them all there's quite a bit quite a bit of weird there's
Starting point is 00:02:20 quite a lot going on what were we talking about the yips and how the leaps beat themselves tell me about it they got the yips man uh i think it explains uh the disconnect in the fan base it explains the disconnect in um how you view the team versus actually watching them when they play um it explains why game seven is consistently their worst game of most series it wasn't this time it was only like second or third worst um and it explains why they're losing in three on three overtime right now uh because we caught austin matthews in a lie ladies and gentlemen caught him in a bit of a lie he talked after the game about how it's not a concern And Mark Giordano
Starting point is 00:03:07 Who is not programmed yet You see He's not a Leaf bot He basically said Something along the lines of Yeah we're in a bit of a rut When it comes to overtime And he wasn't talking about
Starting point is 00:03:24 Bad luck Dude this They clearly have a mental block Worse than the goal going in Was William Nylander's entire first shift And just slit. I saw some people criticizing him for losing his composure when he broke his stick. I was happy to see it.
Starting point is 00:03:42 I was glad he was as mad as I was. He iced it twice on two bad passes in the same shift in overtime. Yeah. And this is what happens when the Leafs lack confidence is they lose the ability to do anything. Remember at the beginning of the season when they couldn't make a pass? It was like the first seven games of the season. They could not complete a pass. it was the weirdest thing ever
Starting point is 00:04:05 but you're asking me to make positive videos about how they're going to go far and right the ship what? they're not making passes man and they've gotten it back and consistently over the last few games including this one against the Islanders
Starting point is 00:04:20 I'm watching them and I'm like the Leafs are back look at the way they're moving 7-0 in the first part of the and then 0-7 then a goal this is why you gotta watch the leafs in 10 minute segments incredible shit like they they don't just sort of coast like they they i think they struggle in the playoffs because they don't know how to
Starting point is 00:04:45 trade barbs like they just they never the leafs never get jabbed it's just uppercuts it's just uppercuts straight to the jaw i i don't understand it but am i making too big of a deal out of three on three overtime when the game could be summed up as they played incredibly in front of their third stringer who let them down i think the fan base has been way too hard on eric shelgren he blew the game tell me how he fucking left his net when he shouldn't have he uh made an awful goalie pass yeah like listen i get tie the game up i get shit from goalies sometimes like no listen sometimes you got to leave the net i know i know there are times where it makes sense for the goaltender to leave the net that
Starting point is 00:05:33 one wasn't one of them jordy ben was going to be the first one there he was going to be the first one there by a wide margin and he was going to have options he could ring it up the boards oh well there's another islander in there well he can ring it along the other side because there are no islanders there there's only two islanders on the ice because they had a line change callie Yarn Croak is there. There are other guys who are there. Yarn Croak was there for the Shelgren pass. If he chose to do so,
Starting point is 00:06:01 if you want to do a behind the back, no look pass, or here's an idea. There's three minutes left in the game. Stay in your fucking net. Stay in your fucking net. Stay in your fucking net. I have a wild idea.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Stay in your fucking net. I, it happens like twice a night. I don't get it. Like Steve's Dangits is ruined. That's the inflation is killing Steve's Dangits. like we've printed too much dang it's and now the dang it is worthless like that's what it feels like that's what every goalie does it all the time and it's a copycat sport we see an incredible
Starting point is 00:06:36 player come in and a few years later everyone can do a version of what that incredible player but oftentimes it's not as good it's a bit of a cheap knockoff right yeah and then goalies go through those uh through stages like that as well and you know there's a reason they call them cookie cutter and they all play the same way someone out there is telling these goalies this is a good idea and i want to know who and i want them arrested for their crimes what are you doing you've made andre vasilevsky and igor shisterkin and some of the best goalies in the league and the idiots connor hellebuck did it the other night what which if you're a goaltender 10 the goal it's the most brilliant thing i've ever fucking said ever it's it's in
Starting point is 00:07:23 the name do your job stay in the net that's all i'm asking i'm begging you for the leafs you're not exaggerating the three-on-three overtime thing what you're doing is you're extrapolating what's been happening in three on three overtime and proving the point that the leafs can't get it done when the pressure's on because in most of these instances throughout their one in five record through three on three overtime the way they've gotten there is by blowing it it's it's i don't think we have much evidence of them coming back in these six games and then forcing ot and losing ducks it's been mostly hey we're kind of down or it's a really close game and now we just gotta finish it off in ot and they've been failing in that way and you're taking that and you're
Starting point is 00:08:09 pointing that to their whenever it's it's game five versus columbus it's game seven versus tampa and they consistently can't get it done it's because they have this mentality where they just don't have it they don't have that killer instinct to when the pressure's on and they can actually take care of business they're anti-clutch yeah they're anti-clutch and they they did get it done once in historic fashion uh game four game four against the blue jackets and they followed up by getting shut out i think it was three nothing in an elimination game and i was trying to make this point at the beginning of the year when i was telling you guys the team doesn't really have it because i think that mental aspect is a part a large part of professional sports and
Starting point is 00:08:46 playing in hockey especially when the stakes are so high in the playoffs you know like that's a part of the game and i don't think this team has they've proven time and time again that they don't have that instinct to just finish the job yet but on paper Tavares has a bounce back here not even on paper like in practice Matthews is struggling and finding a way Bunting struggled and he's found a way Mitch Marner is having the quietest I think 13 game point streak of all time oh yeah um yeah nobody saw we haven't even talked about that they've survived injuries on the back end they have another one and they're going to survive that too both their goalies were out they survived it they're winning tonight you think every every single time the streak every single time oh the
Starting point is 00:09:34 oh my god the leafs are down their top three defensemen versus a team on a crazy winning streak this is a game they win you know what this is a hundred percent a game they win the last time jesse guaranteed a win it was against philly and i think it was also a wednesday they're gonna win yeah fuck your jersey adam wow do you know what happened the last time morgan riley went down uh kyle dubas posted a uh really weird and cryptic youtube video about the chinese farmer right yes maybe the last time the maple leafs went uh morgan riley went down it was uh last year in february i believe it was february january when when kyle dubas pointed that anyways they were down their top defenseman uh as well as another defenseman and they went out and they
Starting point is 00:10:20 beat the new jersey devils in their next game really yes interesting oh how things seem to light up in the world what are we uh what are we expecting the leafs to do with their defense because a lot of people were like and i felt like initially okay there's got to be a trade but here's why i know everybody's talking about connor timmons from arizona sue hilarious sue connection sandin's uh d partner uh but here's the thing from the sue um ottawa can't make a trade for a defenseman this is from elliot friedman in 30 32 thoughts which were half 32 thoughts this week i'm not really sure what's going on we talked about it when you're away oh stop doing 32 thoughts and now he just does articles when he has information okay
Starting point is 00:11:05 well there was 13 thoughts and it was he said it's not for a lack of effort that the senators haven't added a defenseman name someone who might be available and they've considered it uh it's one of the old lines if you're drowning other three other gms throw anvils not life preservers so i do think they've considered some kind of sweetener uh but it would be necessary to move nikita zaitsev uh but there is a limit and then chikrin played 23 minutes in his return on monday versus nashville um obviously the most important thing elliot says is he remains healthy arizona is still asking for two first rounders either upcoming picks or recently drafted prospects plus something else and i i and then i guess connor timmons is also
Starting point is 00:11:49 a coyote and his conditioning stint ends today injuries are his biggest problem but he's got lots of talent um obviously it does make sense for the maple leafs but if the sends can't get it done and there's nobody else out there and the Sens have needed like the Leafs don't really like the Leafs you could you can float this you can try to get through this the Senators need a defenseman if they couldn't get it done with all the draft capital and all the prospects they have I don't know if Toronto is going to be making a trade here I actually I agree with you and I think it'd be the wrong decision you have Mac Hollowell up and in the lineup tonight for a reason I told you he was the buoy um i can tell you you can't go past mac hollowell i'm listen he's a wonderful
Starting point is 00:12:37 story it's wild he's playing in the nhl i want him to succeed i love a good story uh and i love it even better when it's a leaf i love it i hope mac hollowell kills it i hope that quote where i said he can't play in the nhl uh it ends up being stupid i do i genuinely do believe it or not all the negative things they say about the leaves i hope get dunked on and are wrong yeah you hope they win yes fan of the team it's so ridiculous when people have jersey oh my god i hate that shit when people think you're cheering against them no you're being all you're critiquing them you're being honest in your criticism of the team or your praise of the team but in the end you are a fan and are rooting for their success every time i see those tweets i'm like oh my god it's just
Starting point is 00:13:24 If you go to work and have co-workers, someone has to work with you. I wouldn't focus too much on it. I am going to. Because I don't think you base your entire career on a team and you're not a fan. That doesn't make sense. Can I clean up my devil's thing? Sure. So last time Morgan Riley went down was January 2020.
Starting point is 00:13:43 He broke his foot. I thought so. It wasn't that last season. The season before broke his foot. Muzzin was also out at the time. And Dermot was playing 25 minutes a night. so they go uh the first night missing muzzin and riley their dear d pairings were dermot hall first line dermatologist sandeen cc second pairing marincin berry third whoa that's from uh jonah
Starting point is 00:14:10 seagull what a dark time they went out and they beat the devils oh my god wow so it's better well the devils were you know legit i wear the devils were trash yeah so we got who's it giordano hall sandy and lilligran i agree with those pairings and i think it's all well with jordy ben on the left now morinson barry that's uh i'd probably take that you talk about two extremes whoa yeah no glad uh glad that's over yeah no kidding i think that they're gonna be okay through this yeah i think these injuries happen morgan riley's gonna be out a month if you look at it in the positive way they're going to have more money to spend at the trade deadline because this month of you know morgan riley being on ltir is worth a i think a
Starting point is 00:15:01 million bucks at the end of the season brody's only like a week away you know brody's coming back in like a weekish people got scared because they said he wasn't progressing as well as they had hoped but like again we're talking about an oblique strain right so that is an inflammatory headline, though. Shelly Keefe is good for a quote. He is. He's the best Leaf coach I've seen thus far for a quote, although Babs is pretty good. Keefe
Starting point is 00:15:30 video quotes are very different from Keefe written quotes. Yes. Because he doesn't really get riled up. Doesn't emote. He's a little twitchy. He's got some vibration to him. So that's how you can
Starting point is 00:15:46 tell he's annoyed. There's a certain way he carries himself, but in print oh that reads like a disaster he's gonna be out he's gonna be out another month but you watch the video and you're like oh it's a lot calmer yeah they'll survive this yeah they okay and like they could even get another injury on the back end and it's like then it then it kind of depends who it is right right i think oh i don't think they can survive a giordano injury and i don't think they can survive a lilligran injury everything else i think they try to figure it out can i get your guys's official ranking of keith maurice and carlisle in official quotes
Starting point is 00:16:26 that come off aggressive who had the best quotes out of those three well okay maurice was dark yeah he's third yeah he's easily the most boring of the three and randy was passive aggressive yeah very passive remember the reimer quote like i thought he was just okay yeah i was never entertained by him but they were inflammatory so he'll go number two paul maurice we didn't know what we had oh man great quotes great quotes and i've never seen he's paul maurice is the closest i've ever seen a human being come to exploding but he always was like that it was never like a like paul like is there ever a time where you do you ever see the sunlight do you remember yes he he did get very edgar allen poe yes but i yeah if i had a tandem of tosca and raycroft so would i
Starting point is 00:17:17 it was dark though do you remember i think it was it was definitely a penalty kill might have been a two-man advantage for carolina in carolina in overtime and paul maurice was a coach i don't remember well the penalty was bullshit and antropov i think ended up getting suspended three games because I think he may or may not have thrown the stick after the game and it hit a ref. Nice. But Paul Hendrick, who is Mr. Rogers time Santa Claus, was in the scrum and basically asked Paul Maurice
Starting point is 00:17:58 about the penalty. And it's the longest five count I've ever heard. It's blah, blah, blah, blah, blah question. you know there's a good story here it's the fact that you can remember that kind of stuff man there's no way it's the closest like we're talking bugs bunny he's turning different colors there's steam coming out of his ears the the video is available he just how much money do i want to get fined oh he's 50 000 40 000 30 000 20 000 that's i i want a new boat i want to do yeah you see absolutely i badly want a new boat and uh i miss him yeah for that reason for i miss
Starting point is 00:18:47 that paul right yeah jesse's trying to find it no yeah that's it you found it can you write it and we're allowed to use it right yeah it's a press conference it's on i'm just gonna play the audio it's not a conference so i don't i don't yeah i'm gonna play the audio for everybody listening good idea but listen to the five count all right here we go paul can you measure your frustration with calls non-calls and and how they went uh either way here tonight no there's a good story here blake's puck was in the net police and fell in the crease it was a lousy call on andrew paul but that's my judgment that that's the way i feel it's the way the hockey players feel it's
Starting point is 00:19:31 what the camera looked like to me so let's just do it this way i've been out here in friendly long enough you want to get the story go ask the people that made the judgments is it it's not mine we disagree that's all i have to say for you he just walked up to the mic so that's the first question that was the first question and he says in his answer i've been out here in front of you long enough being friendly when you just got there and then he leaves so he answers that question then he leaves that's a 45 second press conference did he mention jason blake there too is that when he did i there might have been a disallowed goal i fuck i don't remember every aspect of the game but you remember this it's you know why i think i remember it is uh it was my uh i think that was
Starting point is 00:20:12 my first season doing lfr almost positive yeah my first season doing lfr paul maurice was head coach and son dean was still on the team right to give you an idea of how long ago that was i'm looking up jason blake stats i want to look this up because i thought this was fascinating we never looked at anything beyond goals assist points and plus minus back in those days it was an underrated leave and he signed in toronto at like i think it was like a five-year 20 million dollar deal very expensive for the time based on the salary cap it was a ridiculous chunk of the salary cap but he had come off a 40 goal season in the island or on the island where you know he he had the previous three years he'd done 25 22 and 28 goals and then he scored 40 goals
Starting point is 00:20:53 now the leafs got him after coming him coming off a 13 13 shooting percent season before that it had been nine nine and nine his first season in toronto this is the very leafs thing he falls to a 452 now wait percentage wait there's a everyone forgets this about jason blake his first season with the leafs like before he even suited up for his first game as a leaf he was going through cancer treatment right and and listen everyone forgets i still think the fact that he had 15 goals and 52 points in his first year played every game on that team on that shitty team shooting a four and a half percent so then the next year the shooting percentage rebounds it goes to 828 which is about in line with his career average 25 goals and then he got older
Starting point is 00:21:45 and but the team around him like trash no one cares about a 25 goal season when the rest of the team stinks well let's see if you look at phil kessel stats in toronto 30 goal 30 goal 30 goal 30 goal 30 goal everybody hates him for some reason he back then his contract was like a monument to the team's mediocrity so people never really gave him a shot like no he he was he was an underrated leaf but that paul marie's quote is so good is good shit where how did we get here We know the Leafs can beat the Devils because they almost did. And then over time, we saw the way the Devils skate, right? Jesse, you mentioned it last time.
Starting point is 00:22:21 They are just fast. What do the Leafs need? Too quick. What do they need to do with diminished defense tonight to beat the New Jersey Devils? What's got to happen? Well, I do think it's a little weird that one of their fastest guys in Dennis Mulligan is getting sat tonight. That is interesting.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Can't complain. You're not allowed to complain. Nick Robertson is in the lineup You asked for this You are not allowed to complain You don't go to IHOP and order pancakes And then complain about the pancakes You asked for the pancakes
Starting point is 00:22:53 They gotta take care of the puck They gotta help out the D They gotta make it so that not every pass Is 40-50 feet They gotta come back, help them with assignments Cover The Six guys who they're going with
Starting point is 00:23:10 basically all of them maybe outside of Jordy Ben have the green light to pinch and go deep and have offensive abilities if I'm Jordy Ben I know I got to stay back all night because if Mac Hallowell is going to be in the lineup you want to use him to the best of his abilities this is a point producer right I
Starting point is 00:23:31 wouldn't even mind to see him get like yeah I was nah that's too far I was gonna say like a second unit power play no no we're not we're not doing that but um just make their jobs easier short passes um don't get fucking picked off right always have at least a guy back always have at least a guy back when the leafs are playing their best um their d jump up in the rush and there's always a forward hanging back their wingers do a really good job elia mckea was really good at that mitch marner is really good at that um so that's what they got to do
Starting point is 00:24:09 what did you guys make of wayne being on waivers yesterday well i think his his he'd been on waivers before and then his expiry for being able to send to be sent down without waivers had expired it's like oh you have like it's in like a 30-day window or something yeah so you need to redo it it could in theory indicate a trade is coming um because they still don't have the flexibility to like if they wanted to do a two for one deal or something. Can't do it. They can't do it. So they still really don't have the flexibility. And let's be
Starting point is 00:24:41 honest, this guy's not going to play. He's not going to play. He played in a really unique situation. Winnipeg. Winnipeg and how many games has he played this season? Two, three? Played one more. He played LA
Starting point is 00:24:56 in that trip. I remember. They obviously think he's going to end up somewhere. And it makes him way more appetizing for teams. Um, if he can be, uh, called up and sent down. Right. Uh, we've seen this before. I hope he plays in the show.
Starting point is 00:25:19 Listen, there's some shitty teams out there. Yeah. Oh, they could use Wayne. He can play in the show. Yeah. You know where it'd be kind of neat to see him end up like a team that could. Philly. Say Philly.
Starting point is 00:25:31 I would love to see him end up in Philly. yeah i was gonna say uh a place where it'd be great for him to end up just to kick the team in the ass a little bit vancouver oh okay all right yeah but i don't i think that'd be very ironic after the whole edler yeah yeah i don't think that's gonna happen adam's called philly's pretty cool yeah and torts would love that guy 100 yeah 100 you're philly you're not worried about making the playoffs you're worried about getting the message across right right and that's the thing okay so the leafs have to beat the devils yeah matt murray's got to play really well we don't believe you no well they don't we don't believe they're not going to but they have to
Starting point is 00:26:12 they're not going to no otherwise otherwise that game in minnesota is going to take on a whole lot more weight and i'm questioning okay so the leafs played eric shalgren probably in a game what they prefer he didn't play in against the islanders because they're very good every game he plays is a game they prefer he's not right yes agreed but you have to play matt murray against the devils but then you got the wild who got off to a bit of a shaky start and then who they have saturday pittsburgh again i think you're right i think you're right i think it is pittsburgh just so you'll look at it yeah pittsburgh yeah so okay so you have to you think anyway Sjogren's going to have to get one of those games
Starting point is 00:26:56 Right Did he beat Pittsburgh No Murray did I have no idea I don't know Honestly is it a cop out to say I don't think it matters It matters a little Matt Murray's pretty good
Starting point is 00:27:10 Yeah And he already got his game versus Pittsburgh So it's not like revenge game again You know we already did this once So we don't need to send him out again To Matt you probably give him murius give him wednesday friday and and you know what saturday could be it's samsona's return potentially oh that'd be good by then like it sounds like he's close
Starting point is 00:27:30 so then you want to run out matt murray on thursday or friday so then you don't have to do shalgren at all right yeah that's that's what i'm saying yeah murray murray samsona and then the leafs can have the tandem that they meant to for just the second time this season literally just the second time this season after the first game it's almost the end of the month in november it's truly wild sorry when one more thing that they gotta do uh the devils um are gonna get they're gonna be very fast they're gonna crash the net they're gonna get a lot of shots the leafs have to do their best to limit their secondary chances because one thing i've noticed this year a they're getting better goaltending b the rebound control sucks right
Starting point is 00:28:13 So there's going to be a lot of secondary chances If the D don't clear the point Well and you know the thing is there's a lot of young Inexperienced D there so you can expect that there's going to be mistakes Just swat the thing I don't care where it ends up Just not in the back of your head Was Philip Kroll an option that they can ever use again
Starting point is 00:28:29 I think so He had a tough He was in a particularly bad game Was that the Ducks one Probably it was around that era That era of the season so far He didn't look NHL ready It was by circumstance that he had to be in the lineup
Starting point is 00:28:46 It was unfortunate But Hallowell's there now Mete is Their extra skater Gonna be tonight They'll be fine I'm not worried about them Is Mete that bad that they don't want to play him?
Starting point is 00:29:01 No, I think they just want to get Hallowell a look It's Gio Hall, Sandy and Lilligren, Ben Hallowell Okay Yeah, it kind of makes sense This actually, how about this If I'm not mistaken, this is going to be the first time all year the Leafs have three right-handed
Starting point is 00:29:17 shots on D. Yeah, because I think. Wow. He played the other side. Up top in the first line. That'll be neat. That'll be fun. Wow. He's very
Starting point is 00:29:32 tiny though. The Nylander Matthews Tavares Marner switch up has been decent. Like I know Tavares has been running all season i don't think it slowed him down having marner now and then matthews matthews has been matthews like matthews has been good last couple weeks so i guess i guess a little switch up has worked watching those lines at five on five and then seeing how they click also on the power play really drives home how stupid this debate has been dude like push debate what just
Starting point is 00:30:01 sorry separating matthews and and marner oh that you should never do it you should never never. Who's saying that? No, no, it's you should never do it versus this is the answer. No, it's not. You have four elite forwards there. And when one
Starting point is 00:30:21 or both of them get stale, switch it. And then all of a sudden teams don't know what to do and they start to score and Matthews, Nylander and Tavares, Marner will get stale. And guess what? You switch them right back and they'll be great. I'm excited for Marner on a line with Robertson
Starting point is 00:30:37 which i can't believe hasn't been tried yet he needs a you saw what he did with a pure playmaker his uh his first game what was he not on the second line the yeah but it was kneelander i'm almost positive oh right i think and kneelander is a great passer and obviously tavaris is too but robertson with tavaris and marner yeah yeah i want to see that also your fourth line is your third line stop pretending i it's the weirdest thing kerfoot's on the fourth line i'm sorry It's the Kerfoot-Holmberg-Yonkerk line is the fourth line. That is the fourth line. That is just your spare parts.
Starting point is 00:31:12 Those are the leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner. There are guys who get picked on in this roster. Hall, sometimes it's overdone. Sometimes it's perfectly justified. Shelgren, sometimes it's overdone. Last game it was perfectly justified. Sandin, perfectly justified for a while. He's bounced back.
Starting point is 00:31:32 When are we going to talk about Kerfoot having six points in 20 games? making 3.5 million dollars we have like we have mentioned it can't score a goal no not one goal at five on five not one no but like we've been robertson robertson robertson robertson no no i'm starting to think the conversation should be robertson and also boot this guy well i wonder if they're trying to trade him and taking him out of the lineup hurts his trade value so they're like shit i hope he gets it going putting him in the top six and watching him play like dog shit hurts his trade value yeah but you can't scratch a guy and then expect to get value for him adam's right on that like you need to just play him until he plays
Starting point is 00:32:08 well yeah you can move them at that point you have to like you're throwing in a sweetener to get rid of a contract like that in a flat cap nhl where you know maybe next year this is less of a problem because it or the cap's supposed to go up by like three million bucks this summer or maybe the third line is perfect holmberg is a player really like him and yarn croak i think has sort of found his way maybe those three click together and kerfoot finds a spot and watch then i think this is first guys i think this might be kerfoot's last sort of audition at a spot though he has been on every other line and i think this is it and i think they're saying if it doesn't work here with these two then the common denominator is alex kerfoot and we will have to do something about that now
Starting point is 00:32:49 that could trigger like a four-month process before the trade deadline before they're able to do something about it because i wouldn't shock me that they can't but at a certain point you have to make a decision as an organization while he is this player a good player yes does he have great skill yes is there stuff untapped that's tantalizing you go oh my god please just make this happen yes but we tried you on the first we tried you on the second we tried you on the third now we're going to try on the fourth and if that still doesn't work then we have to make a decision he's played every single forward position yes entire lineup i i messaged some of my stats nerd friends i'm like tell me i'm missing something tell me robertson has five points in 10 games
Starting point is 00:33:28 he is one point less than kerfoot in half the games he's got more points than mulligan who's only got four and i think he might have more than engvall who's only got four robertson should be in this fucking lineup man but the nature of the salary cap and the way you have to negotiate with other gms is you can't scratch kerfoot and admit that hey this is an unplayable player and then expect to get anything back for him. So you need to just keep playing him until it works out and then you can trade him. Would have been the perfect player on the
Starting point is 00:33:57 15-16 lead. Why? He can play every position, look good, probably put up positive Corsi. Trade him for a couple second rounders. And never fucking score. Yeah. He was alright, every night we want to be competitive and lose.
Starting point is 00:34:14 Do I have a guy for you? Here he is. And it's not just that he's not. I'm just about done with this. I want to get more specific with Alex Kerfoot, because this isn't like we're jumping on his back session. People have been on this guy since he came. And there have been times where he's been a real bright light. There have been times where he's filled in for Tavares being injured in a pinch,
Starting point is 00:34:34 which has been helpful. What a wasted and forgotten performance against Montreal. Oh, yeah. He was amazing. I want to acknowledge that this player is capable and has shown it. I also want to know, beyond scoring, there's more to this player that they're not bringing
Starting point is 00:34:50 because just just looking at oh he hasn't scored a five on five goal which is what I said that's part of the story but the actual story is when he's out there what's he doing
Starting point is 00:34:58 or not doing so what do you see they you know who's been a more effective player for their team who his college teammate
Starting point is 00:35:08 Jimmy Vesey with the Rangers that guy's like a bad penny they can't get rid of him stole that from Red Dead arthur morgan quote no but like literally the rangers can't get rid of him and he's actually you know but they found a role for him they found a niche for him the leafs weren't able to do that and i just i don't know if the least can find a niche for this guy you can't tell me there's no
Starting point is 00:35:30 one out there that's a better fit like does a guy like pontus homberg make him a little bit more expendable you know now that you have a well if robertson's gonna play then maybe if robertson's gonna play and this is a big game for him biggest game of the season for him since the last one you know what i mean and uh you're comfortable with holmberg i don't know i just they're obviously in some sort of well they're always in a cap situation if you can replace him you should they're also in a bit of a loyalty situation and they always are i think i think it's fair to say that they didn't need to sign Wayne Simmons to a two-year contract last summer. And I think it's fair to say that they didn't need to sign
Starting point is 00:36:16 Justin Halder with a three-year contract a year before that. I think it's fair to say that Pierre Engvall's contract, that two-year extension that he got, wasn't good until the end of last season when he found it. And then he got another extension this year and he's lost it. i mean how many times do we need to watch pierre engvall go go into the corners with somebody or against the boards with somebody and not use his size at all he's one of the most infuriating players i've ever watched absolutely and you know why he's every game he shows you every game he
Starting point is 00:36:52 shows you a flash that he is literally the most talented athlete on either roster yes yes because you know he's capable of more you're not you don't hate him for the sake of hating it's like Pierre, just finish the play. He has 26 abs. Yeah, he's in crazy shape. He's the tallest Leaf. He might be the heaviest Leaf. He's maybe the fastest Leaf.
Starting point is 00:37:17 Won't throw a hit. I don't know who else to compare him to. I really don't. Chad Kilger? Yeah, maybe. Todd Warner? I don't know. It's just like Chad Kilger.
Starting point is 00:37:30 I remember one like... fastest skater hardest shot and we were all like what well yeah and he was like a top five draft pick he was picked based on those skills third or fourth overall yeah maybe six seven yeah that's a guy that just never totally panned out the pad all the skill the pick after ackieberg yeah and i and it's not to i don't want to dump on players here but it's sort of like specifically you know if you're sitting there wondering oh why you know why do fans keep going after these guys well it's because they're capable of more they're better than this you're better than this curve it's better than this ang ball is better than this i do think the leafs hem themselves into a corner
Starting point is 00:38:06 you've got you have wayne simmons on a contract that's a year too long what would it have cost you to just get him on a one year here's another quarter million here's what i hate here we are micro analyzing picking the team apart and this is what one shitty moment does to your stupid hockey team the islanders are a wagon this year they are they're back they're great they're a team that you anticipate i think they're pretty good you anticipate seeing them in the playoffs um this that game i thought they picked the islanders apart they beat them they were the better defensive team they were the better offensive team they uh put their third stringer out against a vesna candidate and outplayed them he blows it in the final three minutes
Starting point is 00:38:57 what that should have been is a 2-1 leafs win that you build on and go here we are knocking off another top 10 team and up next we're gonna end the devil streak and now we're talking about wins it it's so true you know what i mean yeah and like that's But I keep saying Why are we at a 50 contract limit We can't make it 2 for 1 trade We're not even sitting here for the first 40 minutes Of the show talking about this game
Starting point is 00:39:27 If Sheldon stays in his net We're talking about fucking something else It's conversation for another day The Leafs should have been able to ride this week They were setting themselves up To ride this week 6-1-2 or something Until Valentine's Day
Starting point is 00:39:43 And now they're Down Riley and we're talking about kerfoot and robertson and mulligan and all this bullshit yeah we do we don't do like 30 minutes on defenseman trades you know instead of like the team can't win it'd be it'd be a conversation if if one mistake is made but it seems like consistently over and over and over again they make that one mistake and they blow it here let me put a positive spin on it so hollowell's making his nhl debut tonight right now like next week we might discover we have a different answer but right now should the Leafs go out and get a defensive right no not right now Adam I wouldn't
Starting point is 00:40:22 say so I also don't think they should go out and get one they're down Muzzin Brody and Riley and we all agree that they have enough depth to weather the storm that's a huge compliment to what the Leafs have accomplished however we have we have our complaints man yep it's fair um let's move on let's talk about the ottawa ownership situation a little bit of a revelation in uh 32 thoughts 13 thoughts that's cool ryan reynolds has had at least two meetings with potential senators ownership groups this week i elliot says he's curious to see if he ends up selecting one of them or if the nhl recognizing the positive public reaction tries to place him with the event uh tries to place him with the eventual purchaser which would be a very gary betman move
Starting point is 00:41:09 like hey we like this group so you're gonna go there now yeah um the process is going to ramp up next week and the hope is the front runner will be identified by mid-january uh one source on sal gladiator who was hired by the senators to facilitate the sale he knows how to create an auction um uh also there was some uh wondering about the weekend as in the singer his involvement um love that uh he partners with has i guess there's some ties with a potential buyer and the weekend's reps uh lived in ottawa uh after their families emigrated to canada so there are some ties there i don't know how far that goes but there are some potential where the weekend and ryan reynolds team up they with some billionaires to buy the sense they always try and
Starting point is 00:41:58 do the spin where they find the local connection so that the fans understand why this rich person is coming in on the team but it's also just like a great investment and maybe we can just be honest about your intentions that pro sports are a fantastic investment we've seen celebrities time and time again team up with the people who have the actual billionaire money we've seen it with like magic johnson uh getting the the dodgers and and j-lo and a-rod getting in on the marlins for a time there and so we've seen this celebrity get into the sports uh buying teams world and the weekend season opportunity because you've seen other celebrities do it and the ottawa center is the only hockey franchise up for sale in the in the money bracket that he can team up and get
Starting point is 00:42:39 into so that's probably his intentions but they love the media spin of we found a local connection as well i have found a local connection as well so i'm gonna throw the hat in the ring there is a Sens fan out there who has collaborated with The Weeknd. Belly. I don't think Belly's got the money. I don't think Belly's got the money for that.
Starting point is 00:43:03 Or the brand name to get in. Canadian successful Belly? Probably not. And here's Belly! Not to denigrate Belly's career. He's written for some major, major artists. He's done amazing work. Belly's got hits. Man Listen is a good song. Oh no, absolutely. I'm not ragging on Belly. I'm just saying
Starting point is 00:43:19 there's like where Belly's at and then there's where the weekend's at and that's a very big difference which one of them played the super bowl uh i think it was belly yeah well i think i think he has a couple million to add to the cause sure a couple million make you stand different i dropped the ball so i ran with it no no here i'll do the rest of the song it'll be better i want belly to join the weekend and ryan reynolds and also the it's always sunny guy i don't know this better happen for reynolds right like this is this is gonna be well i think the nhl knows it needs to yeah and and i think that's why they're like we'll place him with the
Starting point is 00:44:01 winning bidders because they want him associated with the sport which is just i i hate the gary betman stank on that like hey we're here we're gonna put you with the other because you must take the nhl them everything the entire thing is gary bettman's thing everything we know about the league is gary's got his fingers on everything adam you bring it up all the time about how he people ask for his opinion on the broadcasters and who should be running what team yes what hires people should do hey do you think this guy would make a good gm and just now that we're openly just like okay gary bettman gets to pick ryan reynolds as partners for this team it's like whatever you know
Starting point is 00:44:39 Gary get out of here people talk about the good things that have happened to the National Hockey League while he's been commissioner and no one asks could another guy have done even better and the answer is absolutely another guy could have done even better he's in the Hall of Fame
Starting point is 00:44:56 well he put himself there no no the Hall of Fame has a voting committee and they all have they're all farts they're all farts why do they have their positions how do they get to how do they get to be a part of the committee guys you're throwing gary bedman in the hall of fame while he's still working you fart sniffer get out of here yeah sorry some of your friends are on that committee stop it i don't
Starting point is 00:45:19 care who's on the committee that's it i we went through it yeah we went through it like you fart sniff yeah no whatever listen uh uh it's it's like when you're in a relationship and you're like i don't want to leave this relationship it could get worse or it could get better and this is the thing like gary to me um what he's done isn't revolutionary he didn't save small market sports the way he's portrayed and so many people who even listen to this show believe like if small markets couldn't support teams then the nfl and the nba would be down to 15 teams but the reality is that they can and there are business models to do it and there are better business model models that the nhl then the nhl uses and the reality is if you want if you want
Starting point is 00:46:06 to just look at the success of the nh nhl and nba look at where they were at which was about even in 1992 and look at where they are now yeah i mean you should be in the hall of fame for getting the nhl on a channel where they are second fiddle to fishing oh well then they lost they lost a hundred million dollar espn deal and they a hundred million bucks for hockey rights back then is a a lot of money another guy would have kept teams where they are uh if they wanted to be and simply taken espn's money yep did gary sign the deal to take nbc's money right it was oh yeah versus well nbc yeah because it became nbcsn right yeah and yes he did sign that he signed that that was the worst deal for the promotion of the sports i think in the last 50 years not
Starting point is 00:46:53 as bad as the oln deal was so it was it was considered at the time an improvement but when you set the bar so low remember coming out of that lockout if i don't know if you guys have ever read the those guys have all the fun the espn book espn built espn on hockey people forget that hockey was the marquee sport on espn throughout the 80s why do you think wayne gretzky was so famous and i and i think i think people just forget like keith olbermann who you i know you have a great relationship with sure uh keith olbermann who is one of the oh i don't know why i blocked the biggest the biggest uh one of the biggest sports anchors of the 80s and 90s that guy is an enormous hockey fan all remember those espn ads with ovechkin and crosby and
Starting point is 00:47:40 stuff like remember those things those were phenomenal pieces and what the nhl did was they said we're going to hold a lockout we're going to get our salary cap at the end of it espn said okay well we can't offer you as much because we've just lost an entire year of hockey and it's not worth as much and the nhl said fine we'll go to oln and they said at the time they framed it as oh no we we had to do this because the espn deal was wasn't there and you know the players were in transit in transients and we couldn't we couldn't get this going and whatever it the espn deal was there after the lockout it just wasn't the money that they had offered before so gary said we'll take more money rather than we'll promote the sport and make more money you
Starting point is 00:48:20 need to be on espn in america you do it's it's the only place to air your sports if you want to be a major professional sports and listen no disrespect to valley or to tnt or any of those but they i mean espn does come first and baseball is different because the local thing yeah like that's kind of out of the conversation here and football is too massive it's on every single network which is kind of i think the correct way to go if you're hockey as well but like they needed to have something on espn and they completely took it away and espn chose to ignore hockey you there was a time when you go on espn.com and the little tabs at the top where you click the sports hockey was like on it's the little drop down menu after the main tabs like ncaa football would be there ncaa
Starting point is 00:49:05 basketball would be ahead of hockey mma would be ahead of hockey because they have mma rights and stuff and the ufc was booming it was it was terrible for the game and it truly died in a large part of america yeah it feels like it's coming back a little bit coming back a little bit it almost feels like undoable damage because they bring out steven a smith to do like a little segment about the nhl and it's very obviously him just making it the fuck up well and he hasn't done one since right first take was supposed to talk about hockey he just won't because no one cares yeah no one there's no audience for it we care we're weird you're weird we're all weird wait but what i would say is that i do think hockey is making inroads despite itself i think
Starting point is 00:49:52 the nhl is making inroads with a younger community despite itself however they've got some real challenges it is time for fresh air at the top we know that ryan reynolds would help ryan reynolds would help with that commissioner it's smart circle this conversation that stuff this stuff helps the weekend being a sense fan that would be upsetting fucking late night television talking about the ottawa senators yeah the ottawa senators how many people live in ottawa million yet no that's a million million million two i think like he's on late night that's huge for the game i am a big analytics nerd and i want to know 994 not even a million yet that's according to that's 2017. Ryan Reynolds will push that over.
Starting point is 00:50:31 You're a bullshitter, Google. And Montreal says 1.78. So there you go. I'm a big analytics nerd. I want to know how much of an increase in traffic the Wrexham documentary has gotten in Canada
Starting point is 00:50:47 since that rumor started. That's a good question. I started watching it. Haley Selvian started watching it. What is that? The Wrexham documentary is the documentary about the, I think, fifth tier English soccer team that Ryan Reynolds and the guy whose name I keep forgetting from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Starting point is 00:51:03 bought. They bought a football team from Wales. James Gandolfini. He said, Christopher. Buying a soccer team, Christopher. I've been watching so much Superheroes.
Starting point is 00:51:19 Oh, it's called football tee, but it's not really football. It's soccer. Anyway. What about the old British guy from it. Downton Abbey. Do your Downton Abbey guy. Prostitute. In Downton.
Starting point is 00:51:35 In Downton. So, Ryan Reynolds made a doc about a tier 5 football team? Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, he bought it with the It's Always Sunny guy, who I should like that show, and I just haven't gotten around to it. I like every clip I've ever seen. But anyway, they had never met before,
Starting point is 00:51:51 and they were just like, let's buy a fifth tier Welsh soccer team. And then they did. And they made a whole documentary about it. And I'm watching it. It's like Ted Lasso with steaks. Because it's real.
Starting point is 00:52:05 Because it's real. It's real. And if you lose a game, all your Welsh fans go, fuck you. You made the team shitty. And it's awesome. I want to see the Sens one. Yeah, the latest rumor is that if he ends up buying it, they're going to make one. Yeah, obviously.
Starting point is 00:52:23 That makes perfect sense. And that's probably part of the way you get a little bit of money for it. You know what I mean? Like, you can't tell me that documentary is not helping to fund Rexham. Obviously it is. And you look at what being on Netflix has done for F1, the fastest growing sport in the world right now. Oh, what being relevant has done for it? Drive to survive.
Starting point is 00:52:46 Oh, what being visible and relevant has done? Ryan Reynolds is, he's thinking outside the box here and him coming into the league would be tremendous. A show like this would be Absolutely fantastic for the game of hockey And for the Ottawa Senators in particular I'm just trying to see if Welcome to Wrexham On FX
Starting point is 00:53:09 Oh and for a show that's on Disney Plus, boy there's a lot of Bucks Disney Plus has like, what is it Star or whatever they call it That's where they put like Family Guy They also have National Geographic too If you ever have an editable
Starting point is 00:53:26 The National Geographic section of Disney Plus Is sweet Because you can only watch Planet Earth so many times You need to watch some other stuff right And it's pretty great Adam and I have watched Time lapses of mushrooms growing Yeah sweet
Starting point is 00:53:42 Really good times highly recommend Yeah I mean I hope this happens I just can't see the weekend As a Sens fan it would bother me No, that's what Belly talks him into. You guys are really underplaying Belly's role in all this. How many Americans listening to this show know who Belly is, do you think?
Starting point is 00:54:01 A lot. Not enough. You think so? We're both right. No, no. A lot, not enough. People gotta know Belly. Do they?
Starting point is 00:54:10 Yeah. Belly's an icon. He's used the very underutilized saxophone in many a hit. He has. One of which I can name. Rob McElhaney. Rob McElhaney. thank you jesse i'm gonna send you a brother of curtis nope i'm gonna send you a clip okay
Starting point is 00:54:29 i'm gonna send you a clip actually i'm not even sure we can use it's actually footage during a hockey could we use footage of a hockey game no but from europe no probably probably not damn it send it and we'll watch it no i can't i can't tell guy who lost his mind and attack the ref no no i didn't is that guy who jumped on the icing street no it's the guy who slapped the puck into his own net have you not seen this no it's making the rounds on twitter can we watch it and you can just describe it okay yeah sure so here we are okay so i just want you to have a look at this oh this yes i have seen so send me send me so i can do pauses okay okay okay all right all right all right just uh don't don't show which account it's from if if you know what
Starting point is 00:55:13 i'm saying um uh i don't so oh i'm gonna text it to you jesse um so basically what's happening here is there's two teams i don't know i don't recognize these jerseys i don't know green is salavat yelayev okay and then who's the red and white uh oh nuts vitus maybe okay so the defenseman for salavat is trying to clear the puck with his hand now you have to remember this is coming at him about eye level and he wants to throw it into the corner but he swats it with his left hand across the right side of his body and the goalie is on the right side of his body and comedy ensues comedy ensues i'm trying to find out who the player is nomenko 31 i I think.
Starting point is 00:56:06 33. 33. I'm going to look it up. 33, yeah. Because guaranteed. You know something about him? I know something about him, and there's a tie to the Leafs. You think so?
Starting point is 00:56:17 No, I don't know. Maybe. Okay. Is it Artyom Nomenko? 33. Plays for locomotive. That's not locomotive. Oh.
Starting point is 00:56:28 No, that's Salavat. I don't know. Okay. I can't find it. Anyway, long story short, I just thought this goal was hilarious. It's very funny. Yeah. Mikhail.
Starting point is 00:56:36 Can you freeze frame it, Jesse? Yeah, I know. I've done it. Okay, cool. I just want to make sure. Man, that's a rough. He throws the puck into his own hand. Yeah, and you wonder, like, what were you thinking?
Starting point is 00:56:47 Like, just let it hit you in the chest. Like, what were you going to do? He's trying to bat it to the corner. Yeah. Wrong corner, man. Yeah, wrong corner. Like, you're a pro hockey player. Wrong corner.
Starting point is 00:56:57 Do this. Mikhail Domenkov. He has three goals, which is wrong. It should be listed as four, because we clearly just saw him score one uh he plays with uh shakir mukamadulan who is a first round pick of the new jersey devils uh ryan murphy a former first round pick of the uh carolina hurricanes and nicolai coolaman interesting there you go well done there you go god who doesn't love hockey db and Ilya Zhov
Starting point is 00:57:29 the goalie I recognized from my KHL highlight days yes yes love a good KHL clip always good for a laugh that's uh you know who did that in the NHL who batted the puck into
Starting point is 00:57:45 his own net with his glove Mark Bergevin oh really when he was with the St. Louis Blues oh wow yes like well except Mark's was worse it was more of a throw he didn't bat it he like had possession of the puck and just went so he did he put his hands around it too basically and just so it's a penalty and it's a goal yeah although knowing
Starting point is 00:58:09 the nhl to be like oh they cancel each other out it's no big deal yeah we'll decide that during intermission and john tortorella loses his mind okay all right you know what let's do the press conference.
