with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake what are we doing here what are we even
doing a really good show you know we should be we should be no we should be at at church
praying that our team the toronto maple leaf stops being dirty this is not what we're about
man can i just say how great it is for the first time in two decades since darcy tucker
and gary roberts and ty domey and tom fitzgerald you know fitzy i like fitzy tom fitzgerald yep
uh travis green all those guys were toronto maple leafs love last time at least were called
dirty here we are and that time correct yeah they were pretty dirty absolutely man there were some
memories getting brought up
recently of that series between the Leafs
and Islanders from 2002.
Oh my god.
Shane Corson
was stapled to Alexi Yashin
and just became
a hero because of that. He shut him down.
It got suspended for a game for
kicking Eric Kerens.
Oh yeah. Oh my god.
And Steve Webb
on the Islanders was just such a
rat and Tucker low bridging
uh everybody who was it pecca i think he went after and then gary roberts got kenny johnson
oh it's just it's a massacre it was it was brutal and then but this team's dirty
yeah you listen if i was a jets fan i would not like the leafs right now no that's okay
no it's totally understandable totally that i guess are we starting are we starting with that
yeah why not why not why not i always say i don't have a problem with it so it came out today uh
that nikolai ehler is gonna is gonna miss the rest of the regular season right with an injury
i don't believe they disclosed it and they also so there was some confusion about where the injury
came from uh i don't have the exact paul marie's quote in front of me but what elliot friedman
tweeted out paul maurice says nick ehlers out for rest of regular season after hit from jake
muzzin on saturday he's having a great year now i think that's just an awkwardly worded tweet from
elliot because i don't think he wasn't being sarcastic oh he's having a great year yeah no
no no no that's not even the point can you imagine nikolai ehlers oh he's having a great time he was
voted most underrated player in the north division and uh he is like he absolutely is
i think he's the best forward on the jets oh i do oh he is he's better than shifley but mark
and blake wheeler's focus and they're committed to winning no sealers on that they're committed
they're so committed to winning that people don't want to play there because as a fan of another
as a fan of a of a team that is not the jets like a fan of a team that has to play the jets
I am far more afraid of Nikolaj Ehlers than anyone else on the Jets.
That dude, he's probably got like half his points against the Leafs this season.
Anyway, I don't think Paul Murray specifically said it was from the Muzzin hit,
but Freed was extrapolating because immediately after that hit, he went off.
He went down the tunnel for a few minutes before returning to the game.
you see him sort of go with his shoulder um kind of wince and then if i'm not mistaken afterwards
he had his alter several altercations with joe thornton with all the cross checks now i'm sure
they didn't tickle and i'm sure you know he's probably got some other injuries from that but
it looks like a shoulder injury and it looks like it's from the muzzin hit and by the way the eelers
thornton stuff was fun to watch like that that was some of the most compelling hockey television
I've seen in years it was great okay you know how everything with me is a crisis no no and I have I
have uh the tendency to go over the top can you imagine right now if so who's the Nikolai Ehlers
equivalent on the Leafs like Nylander Nylander or Marner you know star winger I'd say more Marner
yeah probably okay let's say marner then so let's say some fourth liner on the jets
was going after marner all game and after marner left the bench because he was injured
and came back that fourth liner cross-checked him three different times first once so hard so that
he broke his stick went to the bench got another stick cross-checked him with that one went to the
box came out of the box cross-checked him again can you imagine what this fan base would be saying
right now how many small fires would be started in the city of toronto if no one stuck up for
marner after that how was it how did no one say anything to joe thornton other than the officials
well because i don't know that joe would be the most fun guy to go up against
someone anyone you got logan stanley you got that big guy anybody anybody lose the fight let
him know you give a shit if i'm like okay we talked about matthew kachuk feeling abandoned
by his team earlier this season what the hell is healers feeling no one you want to see a fight
i'm sure there i'm sure there are words oh no like i'm sure there are words that were said
like we just didn't see it physically right the Leafs have said so many words to the Bruins
like so many words the Leafs and uh the Leafs and Jets play one more time this season
no one should be dressed no the Leafs shouldn't dress anyone the Marlies yeah that is the Marlies
for sure now I have a question I have a question um under the radar in all of this
is mark shifley being benched in the second period are we gonna do who are the crown because
yeah after this one after this okay yep yeah uh we are gonna do it it's uh we're jumping in
it's hot it's hot the leafs haven't really had a pre-playoff game like this in a number of years
where they're going head to head with someone it's heated and they're both going to make the
playoffs and may just end up playing each other this is there's a heat to this i'm getting
the sense that jesse wanted to bring up one of these as yeah i was i was gonna do paul marie's
for my crown but oh okay well then let's do it no no i'll pick somebody else no no no no have you
got audio no we usually we usually start with who wears the crown so i can get into the game and i
guess that's what we're doing set up these things and then we don't talk about them beforehand but
all right whatever all right well let's get into who wore the crown who's brought to you by jesse
well we have uh we have two sponsorships to get to uh this episode because we did miss it last
episode so the first half is going to be sponsored by maddie okay i'm going to read maddie's little
note here um matty maddie gave fifty dollars hey uh the syrian american medical society is an
incredible organization that provides medical care for those affected by the ongoing issues
in syria i have supported uh monetarily for a few years now but was inspired to donate again
recently due to the bombing and subsequent closing of i'm not going to say this correctly but al
at tarib surgical hospital on march 21st sam's is partnered with uh sammy for syria which is
spearheaded by professional wrestler sammy zane uh sammy for syria specifically funds and maintains
mobile clinics within the country and primarily helps those who have been displaced due to the
bombings and airstrikes and may not have immediate access to hospitals so maddie wanted to bring
attention to that fund and gave 50 bucks adam please uh read the liner hey maddie uh sorry hey
you want to sponsor the crown segment be like maddie donate to a great cause because why not
why not sponsor the crown segment steven you don't get to go first i do not get to go first
jesse gets to go first who do you give your crown to jesse my crown goes to paul maurice for
benching that bum mark shifley mark shifley looked like everybody going around for a lap at nathan
phillips square just lazily enjoying their time how dare you make all of that money and not try
and do a line change just coasting to the bench standing up straight not even in a stride gliding
to the he deserved every second of that benching for being a professional hockey player and trying
that hard. The crown goes to Paul
Maurice, ex-Leaf, gets a crown
this week instead of a current Leaf.
Thank you for all of your time here.
I'm sorry it didn't go as well as we hoped.
We had a hard time getting you to have a goalie.
There it is.
Goalie.
You guys said it at the exact same time.
Oh my god.
That's very funny.
I wish it ended better, your tenure
here, but thank you for doing that
on Saturday night.
It was so funny to see Mark
shifley in the press too like i didn't agree with the decision okay is that what he said yes what he
said anyway the funny thing was problems jets fans were pissed at me earlier this season for kind of
laughing at the whole blake wheeler and mark shifley narrative about them being so committed
to winning i don't see mark shifley committed to defense ever uh and if you're committed to winning
maybe be committed to that and the by the way the advanced numbers back me up on that
their forwards in their own end are shocking they're so bad connor hellebuck is my he could
be my favorite nhl player that's not a leaf like he is just so good best he's so good but
bailing that team out night after night after night they're unreal on the transition and they
have the talent they're they're a lot like the carlisle leafs they get a lot of goaltending
and they take advantage of uh scenarios very cleverly and it masks a lot of issues but
uh like shifley was clueless connor had no idea what was going on and wheeler more than once this
season has just been completely asleep at the wheel oh you see because i didn't even mean to
do that uh on leaf goals yeah they have a like they're most high paid guys in their own end
terrible really bad now that doesn't mean the leafs high paid guys are always perfect on their
own end but that's not a valid argument one was just late to practice that's right yeah so yeah
no but it's also not a valid argument to just throw it back well what about the no we're talking
about the jets and the fact is mark scheifele deserved to sit his ass to the bench and the
whole joke i think it's a joke narrative of what ran patrick line out of town is how how committed
blake wheeler and mark scheifele are to winning like come on get out of here if you're committed
to winning you're playing defense i'm going to patrick line can you score 50 in your sleep that
and then i'm like yeah whatever cares now uh steven please take next oh you know what
i'm gonna go with william nylander whoa i'm gonna give william nylander the crown um it was a toss
up between him and john tavaris who has been unbelievably hot recently mr john tavaris uh but
Since William Nylander missed his meeting,
that may or may not have been because of an outage
from a service provider,
who's tried harder than William Nylander
on the Toronto Maple Leafs over the past couple games?
Who has tried harder?
On the ice.
Nobody.
Nobody.
Off the ice, I mean, maybe everybody.
Maybe.
The rest of the team.
But I've never seen someone so downtrodden after setting up a sick goal.
That guy was on his last breath.
But he had just broken up a play, stripping Kyle Conner of the puck,
turns it up the other way.
The Jets have no idea what's going on.
He capitalizes, even though he's dog-tired, sets up a two-on-one goal.
My crown goes to William Billiam Nylander.
That's awesome. I like that.
uh my crown is going to go to one rasmus sandin uh boy does he look like he belongs and uh i would
think if you're projecting a playoff lineup he's got to be on it like a shoe it right he can't oh
my god like he if bogosian is able to play last night it's sorry um saturday night it's sandin
bogosian isn't it i would yes that would be my assumption so travis dermot is your spare and
not I'm not trying to begrudge Travis Dermott anything here I think it's a good thing when
the Leafs have that much depth that a guy like Travis Dermott who's been playing uh major minutes
pretty good minutes for the Leafs for the last three four years is relegated to seven because
usually it's Martin Marincin and I like the fact that we're looking at a team here where there's a
rookie pushing a guy out of the lineup who's been here for four years and he's like sort of rookie
I think he would have been here the whole time
Had he not broke his foot
Or not the whole time but a lot sooner
Right
That was just brutal luck
He plays one game he's good
Goes to the Marlies breaks his foot
What are you going to do
Not much you can do about that
That just sucks
That's Who Wore the Crown this week
Or this episode
And Jesse who is our next sponsor
Second half of the sponsorship
Goes to Stephen
Not Dangle
Oh, that's an interesting name.
binary listener i want to sponsor who are the crown because people of any gender can wear the
crown so steven he wanted to bring attention to p flag he sent his donation he sent in the receipt
so this is what we're doing adam please read the liner thank you steven for sponsoring this segment
and listen um absolutely right hockey is for everyone so uh the next time you want to be a
good steve and not dangle what's the charity called again jesse i've tried flag p flag why
not why not again put yourself in a donations position with p flag that's actually really
great i didn't even know that charity like canada yeah did not know they existed that's excellent
have you that's great so i mean oh i'm steve my name is steve oh i'm just trying to chat to my
pals sorry about that um i i was watching saturday's game and something occurred to me
is riley nash gonna play for the leafs no oh yeah no never he'll never play for the leafs no why
why play the playoffs how many guys are ahead of riley nash well he's also injured supposedly
no he's definitely injured yeah he adam zach hyman comes back uh adam brooks will not be in
the lineup yeah so where is riley riley nash is going to be healthy uh come like game two
so where does he ever play does he replace is he can he play center will he replace a
angle now you got me all confused well no angle is not going to be there either
no oh is he out did i miss that no he's just bad oh he's just bad just okay justin board i was
listening to the fan a little today and he said no one it was something along the lines of no one
has done less with more skill than pierre engel wow he's unbelievably fast oh i don't know so
much about his hands his shots useless actually no he had that one sick goal that didn't count
remember that i do remember that snipe destroys the water bottle uh you're offside um yeah i i
don't get it with him but he he ain't gonna be in the lineup nick felino looks real comfortable
on the penalty kill sure does and that was you know what i did get what i wanted because when
i was riding the whole i follow thing i just wanted a guy who could be on the penalty kill
nick felino there you go did you see him and matthews collide in practice today
no oh man are they okay yeah they're okay but felino it's weird felino got blown up because
he wasn't expecting it matthews is a big boy oh yeah like when i worked for the leafs doing like
their podcast with saski i remember there was a couple of times where the players would come
off the ice after their morning skate and they'd go and they'd file into the restaurant and eat
some food and we had to record a couple episodes in the restaurant so we had to be out of there by
the time they were walking in so you'd see them uh and this is in the loo years so you didn't
you don't talk and i remember passing austin matthews and he was 18 and he was a man and that
was four years ago so he's very very big and so it was you know i guess he they ran into each other
in practice running a drill and then um and then you know apologized to him on the way into the
bench and i think felina was just a little winded but holy smokes it was it's a heavy heavy hit
it's it's big pro athletes are just they're better yeah they're better i i um i got to interview
aaron ekblad when he was 15 and there's a just a photo of me looking up at who anyone who didn't
know would probably just assume my father and i'm and i'm like aaron ekblad yeah and i'm like 21 or
whatever i'm looking up i'm looking craning my neck up at least four inches at this 15 year old
he's he's always been that way yep always been that way yep just a big guy now sorry just to
answer your riley nash question because there's oh yeah there's uh one there's two spots open
in the forward group that's it right because galchenyuk's taking one uh felino's taking his
hyman's gonna drive that third line and then hyman's gonna be there so the last one open is
the mckeough spot no they're not taking mckeough at all so then mckeough's in there so that i don't
know if riley nash ever sees a day on the ice with the trauma so it's kerfoot would be kerfoot
Heimann, Mikheyev?
Simmons.
Simmons.
On the third line.
And then the fourth line is Thornton, someone, Spezza.
Here's the logical alignment.
Kerfoot playing.
Kerfoot's on the third.
He's on the third.
Here's the logical setup.
Foligno, Matthews, Marner.
That doesn't change.
Galchenyuk, Tavares, Nylander, I think stays,
although you could put Heimann there.
I think it stays.
Then it'll be Mikheyev, Kerfoot, Heimann.
that'll be your exhaustion line yeah and then your fourth line is literally um 2012 all-stars
it's Jordan Simmons in the middle and uh Wayne Simmons yeah Riley Nash should never play for
the Leafs unless someone's pretty good player if he's hurt if he's not hurt um uh I I you know
it's funny I think with with um with the grumpy old man line it was nice to see Thornton pissed
like that like it was nice to see him mad and I know I know if you're a Winnipeg Jets fan you're
probably hating me for this but you know Wayne Simmons people are like well why isn't Wayne
Simmons fighting well he just got back from breaking his wrist so he's not gonna fight
before the playoffs why they're already in first place they're up by eight points now
who cares Wayne Simmons doesn't need to fight a team that they're beating four to one like the
only way that Wayne Simmons is fighting is if they're losing like they did last year against
Columbus and Spezza had to drop him remember that uh yes there was no reason for that none
no one's fighting anyone but to know that Joe Thornton is kind of kind of mean and nasty like
that you don't see that very often from him I like the thought I like the thought I thought he was a
little extra uh but no i i he's listen he hasn't been scoring he scored the last couple uh games
he's got points in two straight after not scoring since february 18th and one taken from him and one
taken from him broke the record didn't break the record broke the record again um so he's got to do
something else and i mean lucky for joe he's enormous right and maybe not the most fleet of
foot but i got great news for you you're on the fourth line most teams do not have an extremely
fast and talented fourth line okay well are they talented all right good are they at least huge
yes you know who made me realize uh jason spezza was huge nick robertson so thank you for that
when they played on the same line i'm like is nick really sure oh wait the spezza is six foot three
i what i didn't know that that's somebody who doesn't play till next year too right
because he draws in if there's an injury right it just uh i think if there's several
it doesn't make sense yeah you can't burn the year of his contract just if he plays in the
playoffs do you burn a year or no are you okay i believe you do oh yeah i believe you do well
it's like the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup i think you burn the year
of course but is nick robertson gonna be the guy who is well the unpopular opinion don't make fun
of dickie bob okay he could be where we are not sticking with that we are absolutely not
no one has called him that i have put that guy through enough we are not calling him dickie bob
is dickie even a nickname for nick no no i just thought the d i thought the d for defense for
steve that's what i was putting that i thought nick norris was bad enough because oh that's bad
too it is it is pretty pretty bad it's pretty bad it's all bad anyway unpopular opinion he's going
to be extremely good we can all tell he's going to be extremely good uh it's not there yet it's
not there yet i still see um like a junior superstar there which is a compliment um not
everyone is meant to play in the nhl as a teenager he he wouldn't be in this position were it not for
what the world currently is you know what i mean there's a lot of um there's a lot of fish out of
water scenarios going on right now nick uh now i said nick felino nick robertson is playing
full-time pro hockey no matter where he's playing it he's playing it with the leafs he's playing
with with the marlies uh quentin byfield uh has been i think the plan was to send him back to
junior and have him dominate and he's been in the ahl and he's been doing really well
there's you don't have to rush the nick robertson era it'll be here right on time what the nick
robertson era i think it's the diggy bob era but anyway diggy bob will be there with rassan
with razz dean he will be there with razz dean and they'll be the best pair in all the nhl
and tim lege tim legrin and timothy legrin i don't know i know everybody calls him tim off but
What a strange show
We must be to listen to
His off season starts on
What is it the 10th
Dude their season got pushed back
Way far
I think that was the new date right
May 20th I thought
Oh the 20th
That's when his off season starts
You saved that year
I'd rather have Riley Nash play
Than Nick Robertson
well i mean like we're gonna take adam brooks out of the lineup right and pierre engvall should
still get in there like buddy we're paying you get in there um robertson's good i know i'd be
perfectly comfortable with him playing uh on this team even in the playoffs but if you don't have to
which they don't then don't if you have time use it it's one of the few good things lou
Lamorello left behind. But if you have a Stanley
Cup, who cares?
He'll get a ring.
Or at least get to hold it.
Who will? Nick Robertson.
Oh yeah, maybe. We'll see.
Anyway,
I think they'll do anything they
can to win. So if they need
a winger, and they need a winger
above the third line,
it'll be Dickie Bob.
Go for him. Simply horrible.
I'm so glad your name is on this show.
steve because anything nick robertson associated with you is just perfect on the steve dangle
podcast steve dangle specifically said dickie bob would be a great nickname
just just horrible hey speaking of the marlies do we want to talk about a good guy jason spezza
and the toronto maple Leafs helping out their buds i think we do i said you brought it up you go
ahead well so there's not much more to it but elliot freeman on headlines elliot freeman on
headlines and hockey night in canada um said that the leafs had pooled together their money to help
out their american hockey league brethren uh with the toronto marlies they wanted to keep it secret
but that pesky fridge he's just so very good at his job you see so john tavaris was asked about
it after the game and he said all right well you caught me that he'd said this while screwing
together a shelf and um he just loves ikea loves it and um he said it was jason spezza's idea
which i think is awesome for him like i mean he's obviously a leader in the room and he's older
but that suggestion can go sideways he's playing for league men so i'm willing to bet
he's not offering to give the most you know what i mean i think he is if you're you're
that you're like i have a whole bunch of money in the bank i'm jason's freaking spezza i'm
i have 60 million in career earnings yeah right in career earnings right so he's had that but
you could see in a certain scenario where a younger player michael will
dude i don't have that uh that's fair i don't think they would be like you know what rasmus
sandin i know you've played your first game here but here's you better write us a check for 50
grant right like you don't ask you don't ask dickie bob to give him some money you give him
probably some money it's not dickie bob it's not dickie bob's cash that he's after right so and for
for any of you who are like oh wow what heroes they're saving uh guys on the american hockey
league team some of these guys may actually legitimately be like financially shafted oh yeah
now you could do what i did which is erroneous and go to cap friendly and be like all right
well who on cap friendly would be screwed by this and what i discovered is almost everybody
the only guy i could find who didn't have a signing bonus in their contract for non-roster
players these are guys who are not currently on the toronto maple leafs for their taxi squad
the only guy who i saw who didn't have bonuses written into his contract was defenseman tamo
kv homie he has 100 000 base salary in the minors and no signing bonus everybody else
has one so take a guy like christian's rubens for example so he was recently signed to a contract
his minor salary is 70 000 his signing bonus was 60 and he would have got that this year and i
believe he would have got that in full i don't think it would have been prorated uh because of
shortened season we don't know but that's just the guys on nhl deals more than half of the toronto
marley's current roster according to their website are not on nhl deals minimum salary in the ahl is
55 let's say they're making 70 oh it's 51 sorry so it's even less let's say uh most of the guys
if not all of them are making 70 right they're playing less than half their schedule
so they're getting less than half their money 48 to be exact 48 so they're getting like every
two-way player this year receives 48 of their salary and they're gonna live in toronto yeah
you know what i mean like that's not an amount of money like i can fully dedicate my life to
being a pro hockey player i'm gonna eat right i'm gonna live right and also i'm gonna actually
own something like some kind of property probably wouldn't own something probably wouldn't probably
wouldn't own something okay well it's going to be difficult to afford rent uh and all that so it's
it's good of them it's really good of them i'm sure there are people in more dire straits for
sure but why not help your teammates if you can't afford to i also think it's good bonding that's
the whole point right well and who wouldn't die for jason spezza now oh 100 exactly and i mean
after the fight last year against columbus i don't even know who he fought um when he was
when you know the leaves were down and he's like no i will fight you oh yeah and then they came
back in that game remember that one where they scored three goals in like 10 seconds oh i remember
i was i was at a bar i remember it was amazing no uh yeah i was outdoor at a bar really oh i was
outdoor on a patio yes no because you'll remember jesse last august things weren't complete asshole
yeah i was outside at a bar i'm high-fiving people what yeah dangerous man we could do that
back then i know it's crazy uh but it was a uh it was i mean that was one of those things where
right then and there my man at least would just die for jason spencer that and i would too yeah
that guy's awesome and you have to bring him back next year because he's been pretty spectacular
this year like as much as i love joe thornton in the lineup i don't know that he's back next year
doesn't really matter no my most ice cold take of the offseason was i don't know if jason spetz
is an everyday player ice cold ice ice glacial terrible terrible take dudes he's almost uh he's
one point shy of his total from last season and he's got eight games to catch himself i my most
ice cold was i didn't believe in the oilers because i didn't count on mike smith starting
this season like 10 and 0 like his lineup his his numbers are insane you're also wrong about uh
the wild the wild playoff spot in minnesota well me and dom i i defer to dom on that one
dom decision uh noted wild fan dom decision his his ongoing thing with the wild this year has
been amazing also i want to shout out at mr booth uh underscore seven on uh on twitter who's my
favorite Canucks follow he likes to switch his profile over to um to certain things so uh on
Saturday night he switched his profile over to Francesco Aquilini and used the same profile
picture and used Francesco Aquilini as his username and said boy we're really missing
Roussel and Beagle out there with their grit and a bunch of Canucks fans thought it was actually
he's the joker he's the joker oh my god it was awesome there are some great screen grabs from
that that guy is a great follow no matter what team you follow he's so funny i'm gonna follow
you have to he's amazing like this guy he deserves more credit than he's getting uh because he's just
fucking with people and it's it's awesome and it's it's harmless too right like all he does is
i think i think a couple years ago he switched himself over to canucks pr and i think he's got
a video of of all of the people in canucks media who retweeted him oh so i just followed him i like
it a lot because he said markstrom was out it was great what i just followed him and one of the
i finally saw the matthews hit on felino jesus christ it's a big hit it's a big hit
Yeah, they were smiling after, but holy, you nailed them.
Oh, yeah, that didn't look fun.

So moving on, NBC has pulled out of the rights race for the NHL B package.
And this is a huge deal because NBC and the NHL have been partners for a long time.
But the NBC brand is folding the sports brand, like the NBCSN brand, is folding back into the quote-unquote peacock and is not going to exist.
Now, it was interesting that they were still in the race, so I guess they were just going to be like NBC and broadcast hockey games.
But it looks like the money is well out of what they were willing to spend, despite being a profitable sports network.
and it looks as though bally which is which was fox bally was in there um and they're not uh it's
looking like tnt uh according to bob mckenzie is the front runner at this point now if tnt gets
this if you're not a if you're not a fan of sports outside of hockey first off i encourage you to be
a multi-sport fan because sports are sports and they're fun but the steven jesse and i have talked
about this many many times on camera and off what hockey needs is a tnt panel yeah like what they
have for basketball that's the one with Shaq and Charles and and it's just it's hysterically funny
highly relatable which is surprising because Shaq and Charles I think are billionaires and it's just
a fun take on a fun sport which is what hockey needs we don't have enough fun takes uh it's like
bx and his merry men and i think uh going forward it would be nice i think well i mean i'm talking
about the major networks man bx is hilarious jeff o'neill's hilarious i'm taking from bell
and rogers here but we need a little bit more of that i think don't you well i actually have
a great idea for how to make it more fun how's that because everyone saw the tnt news and fantasy
camp starts everyone's like all right what is the NBA on TNT panel equivalent for the NHL
and I have a great idea for who it should be do it Shaquille O'Neal Charles Barkley Kenny the
Jetsmith and Ernie Johnson just make them do the NHL please please just do it I want to see it for
one night one night I just want to see them do it it'd be great it'd be so great Charles Barkley's
the only one offering opinions because he knows everything about canada and hockey oh it'd be
great and shack would just have to be like yeah i don't know what kenny and ernie would do i would
throw the commercials great i'd love that just like people are saying like because because i
think first take next year is going to have to mention hockey have to do you hear do you hear
what adam smith talking about hockey next year guys that's a big deal i saw that video of him
being fake excited about the NHL news
and I was just like, uh-oh.
I think we saw it over
the weekend when
the UFC, because they've switched
over to ESPN and they had a whole
bunch of mainstream coverage of
the fight that took place over the weekend.
Unbelievable. And you just see what it
means to America when you're
on ESPN and hockey is going to get
this giant boost next year just by
being on a network that everybody cares
about. And you see Jake Paul getting
all these freaking news and coverage and all that just because he was sitting uh ringside at a espn
event is essentially what the ufc was because they own the the rights now so i'm excited to see
where this takes hockey because like if the sport grows like over the next year or how many years
the deal is like tenfold like that'll be so much fun to see all this attention put on hockey in the
next decade. And let me throw this at you. So according to Steve Simmons, one of his rare
just tweets that doesn't sewer somebody. Why is ESPN bad? You know, the NHL triples its US TV
money next season by going from NBC to ESPN and TBS, which is TNT from 200 million, which was
what NBC was paying to more than 600 million US dollars. Now let's put that into perspective
because that's close to what rogers is playing paying right now for rights and that's for seven
canadian teams national rights but they're also paying 500 million u.s dollars basically a season
oh sorry is it no it's 400 million 400 million so perspective wise because it's a four was it
it's a 12-year deal it's worth four billion dollars right i don't know math anyway yeah
I think it's $5.2 billion.
$5.2 billion?
Yeah, so Star Wars was $4 billion,
which is crazy when you think about it now.
The NHL deal
for 12 years was $5.2 billion.
So we're close.
I mean, considering the size
of the States and the size of
Canada, right?
You would think that whatever Canada is
paying for its rights, the U.S.
should pay 10 times more.
It's hockey.
But it's hockey.
yeah right it's more popular it's number one so 600 million bucks is is no laughing now that's
huge huge money for the nhl and more importantly it's espn and tnt coverage yeah and good for the
game for what is it quadrupling their the revenue from tv like that's awesome that's that's gary
betman working magic you come out of a pandemic and you times your tv money by four like and
what's funny is that you know some of the owners didn't want to do this season they just wanted
to cancel it because they were like we're gonna lose and and that it made me laugh like we had
berkey on and he was talking about that too i think and and it just makes me laugh because
the tv deals were up you were never gonna not put a season on these deals are not possible
if they don't lose oh no the nhl might lose 60 million dollars this year because of the pandemic
oh no and they're fine yeah give me a pen and we're fine that's what made me laugh it's like
you know if they don't do the season they're gonna lose 15 million but if they do the season
to lose 60 oh 100 million dollars uh just because this is such a rich interaction oh no how do i
convince these guys to make 10 times as much as they're gonna lose oh no that's that tiktok oh
my god he's dead no that's that's all it is just sign it away and you're fine yeah and this is the
secondary deal that you're talking about not even the secondary deal is not worth 200 million i
think there's yeah i think it's the secondary deal i thought the espn deal was worth somewhere
in the neighborhood of 400 million a year this is them together yeah so together yeah yeah so
that's not bad that's a really that's pretty solid yeah uh tidy work there good work and the
players have to be loving that because you know we've been talking about the fact that there's
potential for a flat cap for like three or four years um i wouldn't suspect if if things go the
way they're going uh you have a tripled budget for tv contracts which you know obviously there's
going to be some losses that need to be recouped but it looks like they're going to be okay um
for richer teams like ours too it's a good sign means the cap could be going up much faster than
we really thought yeah do you guys want a comparison we do so uh the nfl also re-upped
their rights this year oh god uh wait do you want to guess how much how much because the nfl they
spread out their broadcasts as everybody across the the major networks and which is the right
thing to do by the way yeah and they have a maximizer you don't sign with one you sign with
multiple always so a fraction of the games as well right yeah and they only play on a couple
days a week so they spread it out over cbs abc slash uh espn fox and nbc and then they also
sell some games to themselves the nfl network and amazon so they have all those rights totaled how
much do you think all of those deals came up to for revenue for the nfl three billion adam
wait for how many years uh it is signed through i had that i think it's 2033
so it's 10 years 10 years so is it per year you're looking for or no the total number
$12 billion
$100 billion
Adam, you guessed under
What?
Holy shit
Wow
Total over those 10 years
They'll get $105 billion
Jesse, I don't know if you have it there
Yeah, sure
DAZN also has the digital rights
For the NFL, I believe, worldwide
And they're owned by like a Russian
I believe like a
a very very rich russian person so i think oh my god these are only the network games
network so it's it's um it's amazon cbs espn fox and nbc totals 105 billion over the next uh 10
years so it doesn't mention the zone i mean have a look at this yeah the zone would be the
international rights or something like that all he knows you can watch khl games on the zone
Hey, that's a lot of money, I think.
Yeah, it's some.
It is some.
When you start hitting the triple digits of billions,
it's a lot.
Oh, my God.
Sports future is to soon.
The NHL has a little ways to go,
but the more it signs these deals,
I think it'll get there one day.
Wow.
We have a podcast about a hobby.
Hockey, in comparison, is a cute little hobby.
yeah can you imagine what a loser billionaire you'd be if you walked into your billionaire
party it's like i only own an nhl franchise all the other billionaires are like what a loser
like you know what do you own a checkers franchise too yeah yeah because that's what they are they're
they're toys for billionaires and it's like which which club are you in are you in the nba club
are you in the mls club are you in the european soccer club because that's the nfl guys they have
a lot of those uh european soccer league uh teams too but like if you're in the nhl club you're
you're sitting at the other table you know you're oh you're not at the big boys table with the
crafts you know yeah you're not the cronkies yeah that's true man all his all his really rich
friends do passive aggressive stuff every time he pulls out his wallet no no no save your money
you own an nhl team let's just just save your money you're gonna be losing it soon anyway
hey tony can you pitch oh no the devils i forgot
i'll pick up the tab on the yacht don't yeah yeah exactly it's it's funny i mean
um it's the by the way the cronky uh protests for arsenal were pretty spectacular uh this
weekend that was they want him out he's not gonna sell but like wow they universally hate him or
that family i guess was this the one where they burned an american flag because the owner's
american probably was that a different one could have been i mean it was a big protest
thousands and thousands of people quite a lot going on well yeah uh it's it's um it's it was
so interesting to watch that whole thing unfold last week just because the amount of soccer
commentators like they want to turn this north american although it was like as though it was
like it's terrible i kind of get what they're saying though because um like i would love for
there to be relegation in the nhl that would be spectacular be amazing i think most of the world
thinks that way it's just it's the internet makes you feel like there aren't oceans
and the conversation around soccer and just the style of sport from uh over there to over here
it's oh there are oceans i was having there is a difference i was having a discussion with a
producer from a radio show that i really really like um uh it's the elvis duran show in new york
for any of our new york new york listeners z100 and one of the producer told me he was talking
to me about like syndication i said how do you reach 10 million people a day because it's not
just new york they're in like 75 cities so i'm like what how do you do that and he's like we
got to remember that local isn't local anymore he's like uh anybody with uh instagram on their
phone that's local to them so if you're talking about instagram anybody with instagram it's gonna
that's gonna make sense to them so you stick to things like that and it was fascinating because
the um i and even before that uh steve to your point about oceans not existing how many teachers
i now see on tiktok saying to their class yo this is busting and then all the class goes
and we were talking about that and that's amazing that all these kids on like all of them to a
person know it uh and i think uh it's going to be fascinating to see where that sort of takes us
with sports franchising in the future like what's to say because of the internet why can't you do
an nhl europe now and then like a champion if you can figure out travel there should definitely be
divisions of these four major leagues in like a london or just in europe in general you know
There should be a conference over there.
Wouldn't it be awesome?
There will be.
I don't know if we're there yet.
Can you do something that's bigger than the Stanley Cup?
Right.
I've wanted, I would love a hockey Champions League.
The Cup winner, the Gagarin Cup winner, XYZ.
That'd be awesome.
Sweden, whoever wins Finland, whoever wins Switzerland.
you randomly have the
Spangler Cup winner in there
Zepter across the
Tampa Bay Lightning taking on
mostly semi-retired
team Canada
the main things
for these leagues though is you have to figure
it out financially in terms of
just the injuries
one and the time
on your team like if you
have the NHL season run how it normally does
and you win the Stanley Cup in June
and then you got to go play in the Champions League.
Then you got to figure out the couple months turnaround
for these NHL teams who got to go over there
and play in that tournament and then come back
and then start training camp.
And it's like, okay, are we going to start this thing?
We got to make sure it's financially enough.
It's enough to have us risk that for our team
and like the time and the energy and the training
that would go into that to play these games
that matter as well as our regular season.
and you hope that that's not going to take away from the 82 you got to play over here
you know so i don't know how you configure the league anymore like couldn't you play 72 that's
anybody missing the last 10 games does anyone care this there are definitely you can't tell me
as even a hardcore fan you haven't occasionally looked at the calendar and gone
yes you saw there was i can't do a game tonight oh yeah and like they're in first
and like i'm super enjoying it but i'm just like oh man like for the first time this season i saw
the schedule and saw there was a gap from sunday to wednesday and i just went oh that's the stuff
now you do this for a job so that's also part of it that's true most people you look at this
is an escape but i i agree with you i i watch every game i except i forgot last thursday against
winnipeg i just forgot there was a game that night um but the schedule has also been screwed around
but but all the same like sometimes you just oh i straight up i like went to bed at 9 30 it's like
oh the least beat the jets i had no idea yeah i got my notification um i think i think um you know
on the business conversation and this has been something that's been ongoing for a long long time
and i don't i have to admit i don't know enough about this but uh bernie ecclestone's probably
not a name you guys know but he's the guy that like basically ran and owned and developed sport
f1 and he i believe is either i think he's passed away but the the f1 is sold to i think it's liberty
media and they one of the first things they did was commission a netflix series called uh drive
to survive which i'm i hope you've seen i have not but everyone's raving about it spectacular
it's spectacular but watch it's season one it's amazing and everybody i know who hates racing
will tell you like capital h hate racing you as soon as you watch it you're in and it's because
it's not about the sport it's about the drivers it's about the characters and the personalities
and um you start to get attached to these people now i know the leafs are doing their documentary
with amazon and i know the nhl is considerably bigger than 20 drivers on a grid however um i
think for there to be a true global growth in this game the nhl has got to look at a model like that
the bahrain grand prix which is the first one of the season which a lot of people always forget
about the first race of the season they're like you know hardcore f1 fans are gonna know but then
most people are like oh yeah it was um i'll catch the second race because you forget you know life
gets in the way you sort of forget the season's begun and there you go um it had its biggest
ratings ever ever and the key demographic 18 to 34 females which are traditionally not what
advertisers are targeting it's true i don't love it but that's the case is it because of the show
it's because of the show and they were and i believe um red bull was able to sign oracle
as a sponsor, Red Bull, the racing team, and, uh, an Oracle put big, big money into them and
they wouldn't have been able to do it without the, without the, that Netflix series. All that
Netflix series is, is a gigantic commercial on Netflix for F1 and people are stuck at home.
So they're watching anything they possibly can. Lo and behold, I think the pandemic probably
helped F1 as well, because a lot of people went through all their favorite normal shows and were
like what the hell should i watch and then they watch this it is such a spectacularly done show
that easily could translate into the nhl like when you look at it from a just like a creative
and a producer's perspective about how to put together a documentary style tv show absolutely
no question that um that the nhl could do this with certain star players all you have to do is
follow a few star players around so we're not even and and by the way in f1 the first season
they don't get to talk to mercedes they don't get to talk to ferrari
they flat out do not even they're not even in it like they're in it they talk about them but the
teams were like yeah yeah yeah no no you got to earn it and so mercedes and ferrari didn't even
talk to them in the first season and people were so invested in guys like carlos signs and daniel
ricardo and max for stopping and you know on and on and on chico perez all these guys that finally
ferrari and mercedes were like well i guess we better get on board with this so for clarity with
the leafs amazon series they haven't released a single episode right they're doing it all at once
no i believe it's going to be one isn't is it a series like a tv show or is it i don't know
oh because if they're waiting for after the season uh you know me that's what i do in the
offseason the guy who goes that's far too much hockey consumes more hockey yeah i cannot wait
into in like the blazing heat of late july early august just sit there and watch this entire damn
thing it is a multi-episode docu-series so they haven't revealed how many episodes but it is
multi-episodes i mean that like people are starting to talk about it though and they're
going like like i saw a few people go can you imagine the amazon episode for that jets game
right like that's going to be and the story writes itself you lose a couple games to vancouver
you go jesus what the hell happened you go and play winnipeg it's extremely nasty you win
you get to follow jack campbell's whole record-breaking run i wonder if we'll learn
what on earth is going on with frederick anderson who just practiced for the first time today for
90 minutes that's great i'm gonna binge the hell out of that yeah me too yeah i'll disappear that
weekend i'm wondering though like you know amazon by the way is a pretty good streaming service to
have um just because the the programming on it's pretty entertaining it's not as good as crave but
no second place is just as nice you know hey show me if you don't if you don't have hbo it's like
i was i was hard on hbo when uh game of thrones was was uh bad in its eighth season but hbo is
pretty great so great past that um i i think the one thing i would say is that there needs to be
an nhl version of this like it's great that the leafs will will do this i think that's awesome
and I hope it generates more Leaf fans.
I know more people have a Netflix account,
but I'm assuming they're doing this
to drive subscriptions in Canada
so more Leaf fans can see it.
It's a smart strategy.
But beyond that,
if you're not a Leaf fan,
you probably don't care.
The NHL needs to do this with its star players.
The problem is that its star players
aren't that interesting.
Like I know everybody in Pittsburgh
loves Sidney Crosby,
but what are we going to get Sidney Crosby
to talk about?
And can you make it interesting with Sidney Crosby?
Like they have a, one of the,
one of the funniest parts of the F1 documentary in the third season,
and I'm not blowing anything here is they bring on Kimi Raikkonen.
Kimi Raikkonen has won world championships as a driver and is,
is past his prime, but still like a guy that can hang.
And they bring him on and he's like, and they're like,
do you like to do interviews? And he said, no.
And that's basically the end of Kimi Raikkonen.
You don't see anything else from Kimi Raikkonen the whole time.
And I was like, that's maybe how the NHL one would go.
And I'm wondering if there's a way,
because there aren't enough personalities in the NHL,
you don't have to follow the best players.
McDavid, Crosby, kind of boring interviews.
I think Matthews would be a lot of fun
if you could get him to open up.
But a guy like PK,
it doesn't matter that PK is not the PK of all.
It's just that he's interesting.
And that was the thing about Netflix
is they were following guys, drivers,
in drive to drive to survive that were middle of the pack guys fighting to get into the top three
but mostly they would finish between fifth and tenth and those are the ones that people fell
in love with they've generated that interest i think it would be really really cool and i think
honestly if you guys haven't seen it please watch it gonna love it um and it'll turn you into an f1
fan in a heartbeat that is what the nhl needs to do they need to take a good hard look at it and i
wonder if it takes a change at the top before they really do it properly you know what i mean
that's what took f1 it's it's it's funny that in hockey the top players aren't the most out there
personalities because it seems to be that way across the other sports like you go to the the
top players and there are also the most off the wall personalities like you go the nfl
it's like tom brady and like even a guy like antonio antonio bryant like or um antonio brown
like the most destructive guys are usually the best athletes you know even kevin durant is a
crazy individual in the mba and then you go to the nhl and it's like oh we got our best players
are our most boring guys you know sydney crosby slowly changing do you think so yeah not as fast
as it ought to but it is definitely slowly like mcdavid i think is an underrated personality
by hockey standards like like you said like basketball he's boring but uh like i'm just
looking at the best players like guys who i'm looking at the top scores like if you just let
these guys talk mcdavid if you just let him go i think he's going to give you good stuff
dry sidle we've already seen a few oh he's dry quotes uh nathan mckinnon is good on a mic
mitch marner is a lot of fun and austin matthews is right there and you can put them together
uh patrick kane is sort of shied away from the camera brad marshawn there's a guy you put in
front of a camera every time but sydney crosby not so much i would want to see but in hockey
like the craziest personalities are like the bottom of the lineup guys you know like generally
yeah and but i would like to see that from the top athletes
just based on what i know of him i want to see how freddie anderson handles
the amazon documentary i don't think you'll like it very much no why no he doesn't he doesn't like
it like he doesn't he i don't know based on my experience he's not a giant fan of the camera
i find it interesting too by the way that the leafs picked this season you know that amazon's
been after them for several years for this it's not like amazon walked in and said you guys want
to do documentary the leafs are like yes we need money i don't i don't think it is just money i
mean i mean but i think i mean sure i think that helps but i think if you're brendan shanahan even
this year you don't really need the money you don't ever need the money you're like you don't
have this yeah so what so what is it that prompted them to to agree to this season and i think it's
because they knew this might be the best shot they have 100 oh my can you imagine
because that doesn't get approved unless like you said the big guy shanny says yes come in our
doors amazon and i bet you from the top down remember what and you guys remember how depressing
the hbo one was with randy like what a school because awful well it's so they have agreed to
that why are you promoting a team that objectively sucks that's where we got the toaster incident yes
and the cookies oh yeah playful banter between dion finuff and phil
just it's our fucking water bottle that's the most entertaining part about that
it's our fucking bottle oh gosh you know what we need to do can we live stream hate watch that
no the old one yeah i don't want to follow stream that i don't want to sleep no no i don't want to
take a nap on youtube oh my god maybe we can take some maybe we take and make a whole podcast
episode devoted to that and we just take five or six clips of the worst moments from the hbo
documentary and just break them down boys with you know seven years of hindsight too let me make
a suggestion i randomly got an email the other day saying hey congrats you're a twitch affiliate
wow what does that mean i don't totally know other than it makes my account more important
but the problem is i haven't really used twitch that's what we should use it for
i like that idea man that was so good all i remember about it is basically it was the
leafs and red wings went on a who could be more shit than the other contest for like three weeks
straight like neither of them won a single fucking game and i just remember they like because
i've had to do many versions of this where you have to just take what reality gives you and
assemble a story out of it and they had a concrete well-constructed story then the losing street came
and they gave up on the episode
and just put together a compilation of them losing
and getting angry because it's after every game
it was the same story.
We lost again, lost again, played like shit, lost again,
played better, lost again.
And it just kept going.
Oh, this year's though.
You know what's going to be a wild episode?
Hey, so Willie's going on protocol
and we all practice with him today
and we're gonna play anyway like that's gonna be a wild episode i there's i have so many questions
about what's gone on this season and i hope it answers them i hope the leafs don't censor them
too bad let me let me ask you this um the willie thing you were saying it was due to the cell phone
the rogers outage right oh i have no idea oh i saw i was like you know something i don't i was
like what do you mean a cell phone no no no no a bunch of people he literally missed a meeting
from going no he missed a meeting that he didn't know existed and some people were like oh it's
because his phone wasn't working but like i have no idea no no i have no idea it's just people
making shit up on twitter yeah when the when when the when people say leaf fans are annoying i
believe them oh yeah like that shit that shit is annoying what do you mean by the way the uh number
for turner is in so tnt did buy the rights for the secondary package for the nhl oh it's official
and it's 225 per year over its seven-year deal so espn's paying 400 a year and turner's paying 225
so that's not bad seven years times 225 is one almost 1.6 billion not bad
that's that's just from turner so yeah they did good they did good and you know what
the promotional value of being even on ESPN 3
because I think, what did Freed say
about the next Stanley Cup Finals?
He had four Stanley Cup Finals on ESPN.
And three on Turner.
Yeah, four out of seven years.
That's pretty good.
That's great.
Four out of seven is all you need.
You know, we don't often say this,
but good job, NHL.
Yeah.
You know what?
This is the culmination of the effect
of the 2004 lockout and its destruction of uh a generation's worth of promotion fans and money
um the nhl had believe it or not a deal ready to go for the 0405 season which never happened
uh or is it 0506 0405 for the 0405 this was the one with marcus naslin on the cover uh that's how
i remember it um and essentially the leafs were going to be we're going in with guys like brian
leach and uh ron francis and it was going to be a great leach team that was going to be killer
but they also had a hundred million dollar contract per year with espn ready to go
and they sat the whole season espn cancels the contract and the nhl instead of going back to
espn which had been their partner since espn's inception and which was a major part of espn's
early success you should read the book the book's really good um they go and sign with the guys that
are going to give them the most money which was the outdoor life network i thought it was versus
oh was it versus okay then there was like an out outdoor network as well yeah they did have games
on like a fishing channel or something like that it's bad it's really really bad you know and this
this is how long it took though for the business side of the game to recover
from that lockout like one day somebody's going to do a book a really good book on the effects of
that. If you talk to people who have been in the game long enough, they talk about how the NHL
veteran players who were on mega million deals back then really screwed the younger players of
the next generation. They talk about that all the time because of the entry-level deals and all the
stuff that they agreed to. I would love for somebody to do an actual breakdown of the effects
of that happening. But this deal, without question, the NHL going back to ESPN, the NHL getting
big money from tnt for a b package that's enormous and that is full circle 15 years later a recovery
has finally happened which is insane to think it took 15 years to recover from that and some of
the biggest players from that time are now handing out those contracts that they helped basically
hamper yes shanahan you zerman you zerman uh those are the two biggest ones for sure uh rob blake
yeah you know big joe sackick uh luke robitaille yeah yeah to maybe a lesser extent it's weird when
you the guys you grew up watching are now in charge of putting together the teams you know
putting together the teams but also like um it's it's the story i keep going back to
that's loosely related to this i guess is jordan bennington telling martin broder to basically
shove it that's right right yeah hell of a story hey man uh like so broder he gets traded to the
blues because he would not or no i don't even think he got traded i think he just signed with
the blues because he would not hang him up that directly screwed jordan bennington out of an
opportunity fast forward only a couple seasons broder is part of the management team and he's
like hey kid we're gonna send you to the e and bennington to his credit goes absolutely not
no you are absolutely not imagine me and martin broder in that situation uh okay
uh well there young goalie i am the goalie giving you goalie advice but do your thing we'll send you
to providence and then he ends up winning a cup and getting a pretty fat contract broder was wrong
on both counts, by the way.
Yes.
Not the only thing he's been wrong on.
He played like four games for the Blues,
and that was the ugliest four games ever.
He did win a game, though.
And remember that they put him on the cover of NHL
that season for no reason?
That's one of the worst covers that they've done.
Yeah.
Who would you say top three NHL worst covers?
Brodeur.
I'm going to go with Brodeur,
and the two they had to change.
Yeah, the one where they had to issue a new cover
that you could print out at home and stick in front
of your current cover.
I forgot about that.
Wow, he had a 3-3 record.
Okay, so hold on.
With a crisp 8-9-9
after back-to-back seasons of
9-0-1.
Were people saying this about
the shit they're saying about Marlo?
Were they saying that about Brodeur?
Who hung on entirely too long?
Okay, but to Brodeur's credit,
he won a lot of trophies other than just the
cup too like you know he is a winner i think i think what they're saying is what they were trying
to to argue believe me i hate that for some reason longevity isn't good enough you have to
win heart trophies and yeah family cups and things like that things of that nature i think to own the
games played record you need to have played the most games oh gosh i know i know i know no simmons
take your whole night just to argue with people on twitter about how the guy who set a record that
looked unbreakable isn't worth it yeah no here let's let's move on let's let's bring on our next
guest rosie domano i think that'd be fun what rosie yes i think do it but it'd be very fun
it'd be an entertaining uh 20 minutes for sure what do you little shits want oh yeah pretty much
and she's right i i yeah the broder thing was that that is painful the um but but i think
you know there was a lot of uh by the way there's a bunch of people online that think broder was
never very a very good goalie but had a great team around him there's a bunch of anti-broder
conspiracy theorists out there i don't know how true it is but i know that there's like this
subsection of twitter that's like he wasn't actually very good well okay the devil's played
the trap and i will argue he's three i don't think he's the best i don't think he's the second best
who's number one for you hashik it's the conversation is two goalies to me uh and
is this just nhl yeah this is just nhl like you'd have to like a guy like saw chuck who was so many
years ago like that's difficult to evaluate but hasik by the numbers was a better goalie
than anyone patrick wa winning matters winning matters and wa won a lot more he won i think it
was four cups two with montreal two with uh colorado he was no yes yeah 86 and 93 and then
96 and then 2002 or 2000 which one was one i think it was it was 2001 because next year was
the statue of liberty goal right which i did a dang it's video about that's wild because they
had the opportunity to wrap up detroit in six games and probably go to the final play or no
they would have gone to the final they would have played carolina and they would have mopped them
they would have killed them and they would have won back-to-back cups instead the statue of liberty
goal happens and i don't think colorado scored another goal that series they lost that game i
think it was 2-1 and they got killed like seven nothing in game seven yeah it's and then he was
never the same he was out of the league like a year later all right so the top five goalies of
all time is some combination of wa broder hashik sawchuck and plant pretty tough to disagree
any i don't know some other names i don't know what order but i think that's the top five in
some order yeah throw in some other name like i it's it's just a shame that the 80s eliminates
everyone, which isn't
not wrong. That should be... Oh, yeah, that's
true. Petrograd, he won a cup in the
80s. Damn, you're right. In the 80s, I don't
think it should eliminate. Mike Vernon was a
very, very good goaltender. Completely
not... I think Mike
Vernon doesn't get enough credit for being as good as
he was. Really underrated.
Outstanding goalie. He was so,
so good. There's a few goalies
from the 80s that I think deserve a little bit more credit
than what they got, but I would agree
with the top five. Jesse, so what's the order,
guys? What's your top five
of those five because they are the the they are the top of the game there's no question right
no goalie for a period of time was better than dominic hasik was this is this is the greatest
run any goal he's ever had or ever will have um where is it until someone else does here until
someone else does because it always happens that way in sports so starting in 92 93 his save
percentages 930 930 920 bum 930 932 937 919 921 915 and then he fell off a little bit and still
had another 925 sees jesus he was unbelievable his awards in order jennings vesna vesna hearts
pearson vesna hearts pearson vesna vesna jennings vesna jennings and he should have had another
vesna did he win a cup with detroit he did okay i look at hashik's career is similar to uh jordan
in the respect that they peak uh at the peak of no where nobody else has peaked but they don't
have the longevity as much as some of the other top players like why did because well i had
almost 20 years right yeah and broder has almost like 300 more wins than hashik like it's it's not
even comparable in terms of gameplay same with um even wall like wall has like 200 more than hashik
so i think yeah i but i don't think anybody you just read it off there steve i don't think
anybody's peaked as high as hashik is peaked so i would probably go with that's a pretty long peak
What is it?
Seven years that you just mentioned?
Between 94 and 2001,
only 96 and 2000 were his own years
without at least one trophy.
That's crazy.
Stupid.
There's no dominance like that.
He should have another Vesna.
He was robbed.
For the Senators too.
He won the first ever shootout
against the Leafs.
I didn't know that.
Yes, he did.
He won the first ever shootout
in a game that jason spezza was in um jim the net detective carrie won the vesna in 95 96 uh with a
uh amazing record of 35 24 and 9 and those nine are ties he had a 906 save percentage
and it was the last time in his nhl career he had a save percentage above 900
robbery robbery but where was hashik and all that i gotta see 95 96 he had a 920 robbed
robbed robbed blind robbed well i mean there might have been a goalie with a better safe
percentage uh it wasn't patrick waugh though because patrick waugh while he was heroic on
that playoff run his regular season that year was actually relatively mediocre between montreal and
colorado hasik was robbed let me say this too um steve i don't know if you've ever done a trade
tree involving dominic hasik but up there among the worst trades of nhl history first off the
fact that the chicago blackhawks with belfor and hasik backing him up did not win a stanley cup
is crazy the the hawks were like no we'll go with jimmy wait instead you know what's amazing traded
they traded um they traded hasik to the sabers for stefan beauregard and future considerations
so so that future considerations adam so i have a different page up was a 1993 fourth round pick
who turned into eric daze who was good for the player that's the worst trade of all time you
gotta give me the worst trade of all time they did better than they should have and it's still
a pile of shit that is a horrible and then um uh buffalo traded him to detroit for viacheslav
kozlov who i never knew was a saber and a uh 2002 first who turned it into into jim slater
oh a lot of a lot of jim slater jerseys out there and a 2003 conditional pick not exercised it says
so the the thing is you don't win uh when you're trading the superstar
38 games as a saber nine goals 22 points probably re-signed with detroit after that and i said
fuck this um i yeah no he went to the thrashers oh yeah yeah you could have yeah detroit would
have been good i yeah i gotta say it's pretty pretty fascinating that um like i would love to
know i know chicago's like their that team was very very good young like i think tony amante was
was he on there yet was he a ranger at that point it was amante ronick um hoshek belfor like it was
a good chelios they could have had a run like this like the blackhawks had in the last 10 years
dave manson they should have won two or three cups with that team like you look at what the
penguins were i know the penguins beat them in the finals chicago should have won in 94 or something
like they should have hated them because they beat the leafs too yeah i hated that series
it was such a they were just the least weren't in the same category no they weren't in the same
stratosphere as the blackhawks that year and you had all those players that were that young dave
manson who was mean mean to play against young didn't they have young yeah oh yeah absolutely
i think wasn't bob probert traded in them at that point too or something probably it's like a it's
just a it's just a mean team to play against and they traded hasik crazy so give me your top five
though let's get into it okay was number one ah it's so tough i always say hasik well if hasik's
Guys, say Hasek.
Wah has the best career.
Hasek has the best stretch.
So what are you going with?
So there's one and two.
Wah is number one.
Hasek is number two.
I'm going to make Broder number three just because I am the age that I am,
and then it's going to have to be – it doesn't matter between Satchuk
and Plant.
I don't know.
Plant to make Habs fans happy, then Satchuk.
Jesse.
There.
Yeah, like a guy like Satchuk.
Like he's got, he's only the,
it's only him and Brodeur with a hundred plus shutouts.
And like he did that in the fifties and sixties.
Nevermind, Sawchuck four.
But then you go to Plon, it was like Plon won what?
Seven Stanley Cups in like 10 years.
And you're like, he was the backbone
of all that Canadian's dynasty.
Like how can you not pick the guy
who was the goaltender for that era of hockey?
If winning matters, right?
That's the greatest winning team in the history of hockey.
Oh, maybe the Oilers there, but if it's the Canadians,
then you've got to pick the goalie from that era.
So, I don't know.
It's a toss-up between those two.
Well, winning, by the way, there's been an overcorrection.
People are using winning like it's an insult against goalies,
and people use that on Grant Fuhrer all the time,
and I think that's wrong.
Listen, his numbers are not wonderful, but he won.
Right.
He won.
like out of we talked about how hard it was to stop pucks in the 80s well he stopped enough to
win that many times so yeah he should 100 be in the hall of fame his numbers don't stack up against
other hall of famers they did not play when he played you know what i mean he should 100 be in
there although too many people try to discount him well grant pure should be in the hall of fame
absolutely yeah no because it's safe for shut up well you want four no five cups four cups
i think five i think it was on the 90s oh it was ranford that's right he was a leaf wasn't he
he got the consmith was ranford ever no i mean fuhrer was a leaf at that point oh if you're
yeah yeah yeah i don't know if it was at that specific time but yeah i have to say uh uh for
me it's going to be so uh i'm going to say hasik because to me it's got to be if we're talking
about best you're talking about winning this winning sorry yes talking about yes sorry sorry
i forgot dicky bob um we're talking about the best at their best dominic kasha he dragged some
pretty rough looking sabers teams too uh much further than they should have been like we're
being honest the dallas stars in 1999 were murderers all of them uh like that is a such a
good team spectacularly stacked team unbelievable and that is why you don't want a salary cap
because look at what that Dallas team was.
That was just four lines of scary.
And Hasek took them to six games,
and it took an illegal goal in game six,
which was an objectively illegal goal.
It was illegal.
For them to have that Stanley Cup stolen.
If Buffalo ties that game,
and Dallas has to go against Buffalo in game seven,
and Dominic Hasek's in the net,
I don't know, guys.
I don't know about that.
I got to give you an idea of that team.
Who was the leading scorer of the 99 Buffalo Sabres?
Dominic Hash.
No.
Can you imagine?
99 Buffalo Sabres.
Is it Miro Shetan?
It was Miro Shetan.
66 points.
That's it.
He did have 40 goals, though.
Yeah.
40 is a lot.
He's the only one who could score for them.
And that was in a low scoring era as well.
That's important to know.
Yeah.
Mike Pekka was number two at 27 and 56,
followed by um michael groshek with a 20 goals and 50 points and dixon ward also had 20 goals
for that team was donald audet on that team was donald audet on that team let me see that donald
audet's one of my favorite 90s players that never gets mentioned in anything i don't donnie audet
he was good in nhl 2001 the top playoff score tied two defensemen alexei zhitnik and jason
woolly with 15 points in a 21 game run the top goal scorers three-way tie at seven seven and 21
games stew barns yeah we both yeah at the same time dixon ward and curtis brown
man oh man dominic hasik what a player yeah you know why i'm gonna also rank hasik as number one
A little thing that also puts them over the edge.
The 98 Olympics.
Oh, yes.
Am I changing my answer?
How many guys from that Czech Republic team are in the top 11 of scoring for the tournament that year?
One.
Jager.
Zero.
Oh.
They played the most games because they won the gold medal.
Also, they played the most games that anybody and none of them reached the top 11 in scoring.
That's just the table I have on the Wikipedia page.
Do you have any NHL players?
Like, can you name the NHL players who are on that squad?
Yeah.
So Solani, Solani led the tournament with 10 points.
He tied with Koivu with 10 for Finland.
Had a good team.
Bure, Korshkov, Bozen, Alexa Yashin's on that list.
Sergei Fedorov's up there.
but yeah no no czech players i know uh jogger was on the team but he single-handedly led a team to
a gold medal in the olympics man some of these dudes i'm looking at the czech team right now
some of them weren't even in the nhl like they're just guys who were the nhl players on the czech
team in the olympics uh well it's roman hamerlich it's difficult milan hey duke martin stracca
martin ruchinsky i think martin prohashka was in the nhl at the at that time joseph
baranek i'm not sure jogger obviously uh robert reichel oh formerly robert reichel and robert
lang peter spavoda sorry i remember yuri slager i remember yoroslav spachek roman hammerlick
oh and richard schmellick but the the rest of them like some of them like there was a guy i
can't remember who i clicked on like former bruin but like hadn't played in the nhl for five years
and then those olympics came around yeah pretty cool yeah hashik was uh he's unbelievable yeah
so if we're talking winning he at least won that or the world trophy um you know i think okay so
i'm gonna say hashik uh so jesse your top five in order so i'm gonna go hashik broder wa uh
plant, then
Satchuk. Okay? That's my
top five. Steve, your top five in order,
which I believe you've already stated you can't
change it.
I'm going back on what I said before.
Hasek is number one.
Wah is number... No, you better own
it. You gotta own Wah.
You gotta own Wah. What was the point
of our discussion if not to bring
up good points? Yeah.
It's a conversation. Let him switch.
The Olympic thing matters.
that matters big time good point by jesse yeah good point by jesse i mean broken clock etc
but i'm gonna i'm gonna say hasik uh wah broder sawchuck plant dickie bob dickie bob okay so i'm
gonna say uh we should have that conversation about broder versus wah now yeah we should well
hold on let me give you mine there it is so hasik plant saw chuck wa broder and i'll tell you why
what yeah plant first off plant stay at seven stanley cups yeah get out of here it's stupid
hasik is objectively the best goaltender of all time a lot of people would say trechiak i don't
know i don't know yeah like he's very trechiak would be a top five all-time nhl goalie uh but
But I think Dominator still takes him.
So Dominic Asik's number one.
It's such a hipster answer, though.
Like, you can't know.
Yeah.
Plot to me.
Yeah, it is a hipster answer.
But you know you're going to get that in the comment section.
You know there's going to be a bunch of people like,
oh, did you see him in 72, though?
No, and neither did you, weirdly.
You know what's funny?
Tretiak could have altered the course of all of hockey history
if he had just reported to the NHL.
I did not know this.
He was drafted in the seventh round, 1983, by the Montreal Canadiens.
Whoa.
How much do the Oilers not win with him playing for the Canadiens?
Forget the Oilers.
How long is Wah Ahab?
Does Wah ever get picked?
Do the Leafs trade for Wah and become the winningest team in NHL history?
You have to ask the question.
Also, Trechak just yesterday turned 69 years old.
Nice.
It's nice.
I do want to say, so again,
Hasek, Plunt, you can't argue with that many Stanley Cups.
I also want to say goalies from the 50s and 60s do not get enough credit for how high scoring the games were.
They were extremely high scoring.
These guys play with no masks and they played essentially with couch cushions as pads.
And the butterfly didn't exist.
And let's forget.
Let's not forget that.
Didn't Sawchuck have somebody just skate on his face at one point or a couple of times?
uh oh he was he's the guy with that gruesome well-lit picture that just accentuates every
scar on his face and this is a time when the nhl played 60 something games not 80 something games
people forget that too 103 shutouts on a detroit team which was for a long time
objectively not very good like i i don't know man terry stachuk to me uh does not get enough
credit people like oh he just played for a long time had a bunch of shutouts whatever what do
you mean a bunch of shutouts whatever this guy was really good and by the way he was pretty good
for the Toronto Maple Leafs too as an ancient man he was like 42 at age 37 uh Sawchuck won the last
Stanley Cup for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1967 he's a Leafs legend they were in Detroit he's a
Leafs legend this this is why Thornton's record to be the the oldest Leaf to score a goal is so
impressive that 67 team was nicknamed the over the hill gang because they were so old like people
thought they were and they were very old they were like bobby bond was on that team but they
were like yeah but you're barely playing and like he held it against them he didn't even go to the
parade he went fishing adam yes i'm gonna try and change your mind here i know you rank plant over
satchuk i did but i had satchuk over plant and it was specifically because uh the three in a row
Stanley Cups that Sawchuck won with the
Detroit Red Wings. Each
of those series were against the Montreal
Canadiens and Jacques Blanc.
And each time, the first series
swept them. The next two went to seven.
But each time, he got the best of his
counter...
counterpart. Thank you.
Does that change your mind at all?
Well, okay. Let me see what your Jacques Blanc
played at, too, because I want to...
This matters. Jacques Blanc. Here, while you're
looking that up, I do have a ridiculous...
it was 53 to 75 he played till age 45 so that's which is insane which is insane and that's just
when the montreal canadians kind of got going in 1975 uh well he was he was on the oilers at
the buyback oh yeah it was a wha but they gave like the the canadians in the late 70s like they
they'd kind of taken a few years off ah we'll give a couple cups to the bruins we'll give a
couple cups to the flyers no we're gonna win five in a row now um they were talking about
the most unbreakable nhl records on sports net um anthony stewart says wayne gretzky uh the points
record he has more assists than any other player has points um i mean that's obviously up there
for unbreakable records but frege got it right okay glenn hall most unbreakable record ever
the consecutive starts record you know how many consecutive starts glenn hall had and this is
Oh, that's interesting.
The record.
I don't know.
502.
In a row.
He began...
So, for many years, just the official backup goaltender for the Chicago Blackhawks was an e-bug, basically.
That's the easiest paycheck in professional sports.
Backup goaltender behind Glenn Hall.
On both Saskatchewan's own.
That's a record that will never be broken
because the game isn't played like that anymore.
You know?
You can't break that record because
nobody plays hockey like that, where your goalie
just starts 500 games in a row.
That's insane.
I played against Scarecrows, which is
basically the 80s. Hey, Jesse.
Can I throw something at you
that might change your mind about
Klont versus Sochuk? Yes.
Throw it.
1970-1971.
Toronto Maple Leafs make
a trade for jacques plant who is 40 years old 40 now the leafs at this time are run by uh by all
accounts of buffoon uh but a pretty smart buffoon uh in harold ballard not because he made great
hockey moves but because he was a pretty good business man he's just kind of a jerk now
jacques plant that season 24 wins 11 losses four ties a 189 goals against average and a 944
save percentage 40 years old 944 and how many games played for era he played 40 games and
everybody talks about oh everybody scored in the old era yeah exactly 40 games out of i think i
don't know if the nhl switched to 82 but even then if the if the nhl played 62 or 82 at that
point doesn't matter 40 games and a 944 and the leafs went pretty deep that year three games
uh the leafs but you know the reality is like i i forgot that jock plant is also a leafs legend
screw you canadians um played three seasons with toronto before going to like eight games with the
bruins and then play with the oilers in his last season at 75 plant is to me you know besides the
gold tending mask thing which is pretty cool in in and of itself the guy had like chronic bronchitis
had to like sit out an entire year oh yeah yeah yeah yeah and like you know back then in the 50s
it's like well why don't you just drink a little whiskey and get back out there you smoke a cigarette
you know like it was you know this is the era where they're like you're trying to stop a puck
with your face and you're gonna put leather between it what kind of pansy are you you should
you should take a different time it is a different time and so i think it's better now so that yeah i
think it's better now too so I think Jacques Plante deserves it I'm gonna I'm gonna give
number two to Jacques Plante for those reasons I could be wrong I don't care but Sashuk deserves
number three because any goalie that is the first goalie to reach a hundred shutouts in the NHL
in an era where they did score a lot more than than they had up until like you know recently
um I I think Terry Sashuk deserves to be there Patrick Waugh um is an incredible incredible
goalie incredible and this is not to diminish Patrick Waugh but what I would say about Patrick
wa the argument against being in the top three is this and i know i'm going to get hammered for
this but i don't care name a bad team he played for patrick wa oh name a team i didn't realize
name a team that wasn't stacked full of hall of famers that patrick wa played for
right he made them hall of famers man i don't think patrick paul patrick wa made everybody
he was incredible but patrick wa objectively played for the last best group of montreal
Canadians, and
the last best group of
Quebec Nordiques, Colorado
Avalanche. Boys, can you continue this topic without
me? Oh, you're going to watch it?
Oh my god, I didn't expect to go this long
and I'm dying. I'll be right back.
While Steve's away, tell me
why Wa gets your
slot over Brodeur, because I have Brodeur
in second place. So
Brodeur for me, I think
first off, I'm not part of the
theorists that think that Brodeur wasn't a great
goalie. He was. Objectively, he was a great goalie.
there's no doubting that um you could be a bad goalie and win games in that era like a lot of
people talk about chris osgood and he's in the he's in the hall of fame i believe um and i think
he deserves to be but a lot of people like a bad goalie really good team um martin brodeur is
another one of these guys who played on a team that was always spectacular always always always
spectacular and the guys i chose at number one and number two could do it when maybe the team
wasn't very good Hasek and Plunt could do it Sawchuck did it and did it for a long time and
I told you the shutout record was a lot and obviously I know Brodeur has that now Brodeur
deserves mega points for being like a brick wall in the playoffs he was unbelievable but he also
had a defensive system which was so ahead of its time that nobody could figure out how to get
through it and it was so smothering they changed the rules literally people forget the the two line
do you remember two line pass yeah remember that was a rule and that was because of the devils the
devils shut down the nhl the reason that remember we went through the uh the saber scoring thing
with miro chatan getting 40 goals which was crazy high for that time and a 20 assist and 66 points
that was a good season if matt sundin one of the best leafs of all time many say he is the best
leaf of all time if matt sundin could only get a point a game and that was top 10 top 15 in the
league shows you how tough it was to score at a point of game shows you how that era of hockey
benefited goalies and you look at some of the goalies and some of the numbers from that time
they're pretty spectacular compared to what we're seeing today and that is because the rules
smothered the game they got rid of the the clutch and grab thing the devils were super good at that
too they were great at throwing late hits and shoulders to the head and listen they were
extremely successful doing it but the the league had to change because it was so boring and awful
to watch that uh please never make me watch a new jersey devils game from the late 90s early 2000s
again they figured out that you can just keep them in the neutral zone because you can't pass the
puck over a couple lines so let's just keep them there and then we'll just play a low event game
and then we'll eventually win if we score a couple goals i remember a a leafs game and we talk about
this all the time a leafs game where they had six shots the whole game that was in the playoffs
and it was normal because you play it that way well it wasn't normal i mean that was bad yeah
but like you it wasn't abnormal like oh finish the game with 15 16 shots against the devils like
what so to me um broder only gets five and i it's a shame for broder because it's like what the guy
got drafted by a really good team that played his defensive system that was well ahead of its time
he had a really smart coach yeah really great defense and a brilliant general manager i you
know everybody everybody screw that guy i was just saying steve jesse asked me why i would put
rotor at fifth and i just said basically because multiple things but i think the devils you have
to remember had a system defensively that was so ahead of its time they changed the rules to change
so that the devils couldn't do that anymore you know what i mean like that that trap was
pretty ugly to watch.
The trapezoid rule, though, is also
specifically for Martin Brodeur.
Yeah, the playing about...
Oh, that's right!
So that's when you get into
that Wilt Chamberlain
level of, well, they changed
the rules!
To stop this one guy, because they just
got too much.
And that's why he should be in the top five.
I just think he's fifth of five.
There are no bad goalies in this conversation.
It's the best ever
of the five.
People take the best of conversations
to...
They don't take them properly.
We're not discounting
Brodeur.
Okay, Adam is.
We're simply saying
Wa and Hasek were better.
You put Wa
and
Hasek on those Devils teams,
I think you probably
get the same result.
You probably have a 9-7-7 safe percentage
at that point.
yeah it's they literally the other team just like strips naked every time they score they can't
believe it it actually happened it finally happened just yeah the confetti on the ice
it's an hour-long delay it's the worst one game he let in two oh it was bedlam and there were some
devils teams that were not great after that era that broder dragged to the playoffs and it deserves
full marks for that you know the uh was it the random 2012 season where they went to the stanley
cup final yeah what the hell was that that was elia kovalchuk throwing pucks on net and dave
clarkson hitting them in that that cup final cost that leaves a lot of money yes it certainly did
it certainly did and man all i think about all the time what i think about this a lot
what do you think about this the dave clarkson contract could have been the oilers because
people forget offered more the oilers offered more same amount of years they offered more
oh my god and he said no i want to go home that dude had 30 goals that year 30 uh by the way on
this goalie conversation uh mark andre flurry is gonna pass roberto luongo in the next couple of
games because he's at 487 on the all-time list at number four and roberto luongo's at 489 is that
in games played in wins total sorry wow in total wins all the time so he shouldn't get the record
so if he could be the third
Marc-Andre Fleury if he plays next season
he'll become the third ever goalie
to have 500 wins in his career
which is something spectacular
I don't think we're
it's not
the right time to talk
about where Fleury is going to rank
because we don't
appreciate the players
while they're here
there's always retired players have an aura
about them
and i think it's because their past accomplishments are immortalized whereas the times they failed we
forget about them yes now mark andre flurry we get to see him in all his mortal flaws you know
he had a bad game the other night against whoever and i watched him allow this goal you go a few
years without watching mark andre flurry allow a goal you'll convince yourself he belongs in this
conversation you look at the numbers you look at the hardware you go like does flurry have a vesna
no i don't think so let me see i can check for you uh it gives me a good excuse to get off of
david clarkson's hockey dbp i don't think i could name when you look at his career he doesn't have
that vesna he has no trophies no individual trophies wow no cons my theater in any of the
three runs stay in the cups no no it would say on the hockey db pitch i don't know because like i
feel it feels wrong naming nine goalies better than mark andre fleury because i want to believe
he's top 10 all time you know with especially when you add on the vegas run in their inaugural
season where he took them to the stanley cup finals too and then the three with pittsburgh and
and then now he's gonna have 500 wins he's gonna be top three all time in terms of wins you know
it's hard but like you can probably name 10 goalies better than flurry oh yeah but i think
you could finals appearances in the best of all time conversation it just doesn't stack up like
that's something that if you saw it you can appreciate it like we we watched him steal
three and a half series that playoffs he did he sold them uh but in the all-time conversation
like i'm just imagining a round table of satchuk plant broder wa is oh yeah wow
hoshek wow you got close huh yeah that's all right put that on the board got close
you know no it's fair to say that there would be one cups oh well there's a let's put that there
i would say in any category there's a top five of all time and then there's the next 20
who kind of you could are interchangeable and they're all extremely good yeah you probably
get like belfor in there yeah good's probably in there yeah osgood's a controversial name as well
um i would i would uh i would say you might have kujo in there yeah i think you might he's
spectacular goalie um and not just for the leaps like he was insane in edmonton just outrageous
that has more career wins than satchuk you know uh that series that curtis joseph stole
as a member of the edmonton oilers stole the stole it away from the stars oh man that was
hockey card of the year that that that save where he's diving across the net i remember i had it
like they like announced it on the score like this is hockey card of the year i'm like i have that
card uh it was was it a doug wait was he robbing doug or not doug wait my goodness was it mike
medano or something like i forget who it was i don't i don't remember who it was one of the
greatest saves in playoff history it was amazing it's absolutely unbelievable and you can't make
a great save like that without being out of position which curtis joseph always always was
always and yeah and like on that list i have flurry above kujo because kujo doesn't have
doesn't have the hardware as well and he lacks the stanley cups you know yeah yeah
I think, yeah, I think Cujo left Detroit a season early.
He just stuck around for more Hasek and him being the backup.
I think it'd have been okay. It's a bummer.
I wanted Cujo to get a cup badly.
I think on the, like on the list of, of those goalies too, you gotta,
you gotta include guys like, you know,
you've got to go back into like the forties and fifties as well.
And that's where it gets a little murky, right?
Cause it's pretty tough relative to today's conversation to talk about
that.
But then you've got guys like where's Peli Lindbergh in there,
you know,
killed in a car crash,
but like was incredible and was a great goalie for the,
for the flyer.
Where do you put him?
Where do you put Billy?
I feel like that's so above our knowledge.
I know.
Well,
where do you put Billy Smith from the Islanders?
Four cups in a row.
What do you do with that?
Now we're getting to a territory where like four people in the world can
have this conversation.
And one of them's Jeff Merrick.
So the other one's Jeff Merrick with himself in a mirror.
just for just jeff and three mirrors what if it's like a video game what do you think here's on air
jeff merrick and it's him in a suit and he's doing his little here's jim jeff merrick and it's him
with some stubble and his sleeves are exposed and you know who might be able to have that
conversation with jeff is john chanin john is an encyclopedia enough a long enough and know
enough info to just have that conversation can read if he's allowed to have cue cards
if he's if he's allowed to have the hockey cards in front of him kenry can do it um john shannon
underrated uh if you can get john in the right conversation john shannon is one of the most
entertaining storytellers i've ever met my entire life that guy he's hysterically funny and he's
knowledgeable and the guy ran hockey night canada for how long very long time 30 years or something
he's seen some stuff he's got stories it's pretty amazing um that's a guy like to have up at a game
months john yeah did he yeah i thought it was you or someone told me this story he just showed up at
a game i think he wasn't scheduled to work they were like what are you doing here oh you mean
it was just sports net yeah that's the rumors that he just showed up and was like i'm ready
they were like all right i guess john shannon's on yeah because why not why not and he's still
doing the podcast with bob mccallan like the guy just goes and goes and goes right yeah good for
john um anyway uh long story short those are the easily the top five goals a couple things i want
to hit because we are running out of time gentlemen sorry it's my fault game i am watching
the game i want to see the most thankfully it's tonight i believe is montreal and calgary
oh my god guys is montreal gonna blow this to calgary but and and and not only are they
going to blow it they're going to blow it to calgary directly calgary's won two straight
against montreal how many points like what's the what's the standings right now i think they're
two point or two wins out is that it that's it let me see here it is yeah it's very close
so calgary has only played one more game than montreal they're four points back
but um let me go they're not gonna blow it there's not enough runway jesse the okay so
So, sorry, Calgary is 5-5 in their last 10, which is not good.
Montreal is 3-7, which is worse.
5-5 beats 3-7, so you've gained points there.
You've gained four, as a matter of fact.
Nobody wants this spot.
Bro, let's – forget Calgary.
Can we have this conversation?
The Canucks are eight points back of Montreal.
They're four points back of Calgary.
they have five games in hand on montreal and six on calgary i don't believe in calgary at all
like the percentage of belief is zero so if i'm gonna put money on anybody stealing that spot
from montreal it's vancouver with those two games versus the least they look good uh maybe they come
back with a bit of momentum uh in their goalie situation i like it hope he is great uh he's been
great lately, so I'm going to put
money on Vancouver's steel
net spot. He's been great, by the way, ever since we
talk shit.
He's been fucking phenomenal.
Stupid hat brim.
Because Pedersen's out for the
rest of the regular season. If they sneak in the playoffs
and they just get random Pedersen
back for round
one, watch out.
It's one of the best stories of the season.
It'd be amazing. How could it not be?
Sadly, it would be against the Leafs.
Oh, yeah.
So let's not root for that.
Now, please don't rob us of Toronto-Montreal.
Like, okay, your story's cool and shit, but like...
Steve, okay, how many games does Vancouver have left?
12?
If they play the full 56...
No, 15, man.
Okay, Vancouver, here on out, they go like 13-2.
They close out the regular season.
They're on fucking fire.
And they have four straight against Ottawa right now, by the way.
And they go into the playoffs 13-2, roll in.
Toronto versus Vancouver.
Man, Toronto and Vancouver have met in the playoffs before,
and Vancouver stomped Toronto in 94.
Stomped them.
Again, Steve, you talked about the Leafs not being in the same league
as the Blackhawks.
The Beret Canucks, you're like, not even close.
And everybody's like, well, you know, if we just got past the Beret Canucks,
we would have been able to take on the Messier Rangers.
no no no you might have been top four but top two were much better than you at that point much
better that was one strombo liked because he's he's a habs fan right so yeah he was laughing at
uh he loves the leafs fan thing oh if only we beat la if only you beat la what you would you would
have got killed montreal montreal would have killed the lease it would have been fun but they
would have been fun yeah yeah they would they would have lost um and i don't know if we really
talked about it um but ehlers is missing the rest of the regular season with the jets
and edmonton has two games on them and they're only a point behind
so it it's looking fighting to play each other whose arena are we playing home ice yeah right
so it looks like i mean they're so far ahead of montreal like edmonton is seven points up on
montreal um so it's yeah it's basically them fighting for home ice advantage which you still
want sure regardless but the battle for fourth it's not as wrapped up as it was looking a week
or two ago now the most fun division in hockey right now to me is the mass mutual east division
just rolls off the tongue and don't look now but the pittsburgh penguins are number one
uh my favorite potential thing to happen though and i don't think it's very likely
because the rangers have played smith the rangers have played two more games than the bruins
but they are within two wins of the bruins as in like points wise
if the bruins traded for taylor hall and then don't make the playoffs
do what i mean what i tell you it's the matt duchesne conversation all over again
how good is taylor hall really but he's been good
but we were we were looking at dushane and we're like okay
swinging a miss oh swinging a miss again and then he goes to columbus
and they almost didn't make it and we were like all right we okay let's have
this referendum right now and then they end up beating tampa and
he was good on that run yeah but it's uh if the bruins miss the
playoffs this is gonna be some tough questions needing
answered i think they'll make it though now i would also like to bring this up oh sorry go
ahead jesse what do you want i was just saying it's tight like you know what's tighter what the
dallas stars are now within a win one win of the nashville predators and by the way if we're going
by points percentage the dallas stars are fourth in their division what's interesting is that dallas
and nashville both play really tough teams number one and number two in their division so nashville
takes on florida in their next game dallas takes on carolina carolina's number one florida's number
two but boy so that i mean in dallas's case uh that could be a first round matchup like i think
i mean actually in both cases it could be a first round matchup because florida's right like one
point behind carolina however played a couple more games um that's going to be really interesting
they got to go against two really tough teams guys are the dallas stars going to do this and
then they're gonna get Sagan back man that's so unfortunate too for the Hurricanes hey look at us
we're first we're gonna have a great time Dallas a team that just went all the way to the final
and defensively tough tough tough team so tough beefy we're getting stops like you said Tyler
sagan coming back that's a tough matchup but it gives us an all florida matchup finally that would
be great and lastly i do want to talk about the honda west division uh which has three teams that
have already locked up a playoff spot vegas colorado and minnesota exactly as we predicted
not minnesota what's funny is uh people like well there's a pretty tight race between arizona and
st louis no there isn't st louis will get into the playoffs arizona won't is arizona is only
ahead of st louis because they played three more games you better watch it somebody's gonna clip
this guys yo it won't be embarrassing for me if st louis lets this playoff spot get away it'll be
embarrassing for st louis and their fans i don't i mean what skin do i have in this none of the
bottom five teams in the west have a winning record over the last 10 games
wow so there's vegas who's nine and one colorado who's eight and two piece of garbage and minnesota
who's eight one and one arizona's three and seven st louis is the best of the bunch at four and six
san jose one eight and one hey we're gonna make the playoffs smack no you're not la three and
seven and anaheim three six and one which for them this season is good that's a good run for
them yeah boy oh boy if you're any of those teams you got to be kicking yourself because like i'm
sure san jose or la would have loved to sneak into the playoffs there if you were just halfway
decent that could have been you but they're not they're not especially san jose is the best of
the worst there and they're such a poorly constructed team at least la looks like they
have a little bit of life like they started the season well and jesse you picked them as a bit
of a sleeper in your in your picks i remember that yeah um they'll have they have a future in
la they i don't know you know like there's there's a team there yeah because i always i thought at
the beginning of the season there were three locked up spots there and it was going to be
vegas st louis and colorado and then it was just a pick them for that last one but for some reason
it turned out that the three pick was minnesota which i don't think anybody saw coming because
we thought they were going to sell at the deadline you know what it's one where the the whoever gets
first place like that's that actually really really matters because we're talking about playing
one of a beat up arizona or st louis versus minnesota who's legit yeah colorado's not losing
anybody else vegas isn't losing to anybody else minnesota you might lose you might you might lose
and no offense minnesota wilds fans listen you got to be having the the greatest season you've
had in a long time this is a lot of a lot of fun caprizov is unbelievable but if you
yeah deprive the hockey world of vegas colorado in round two i'll never forgive you
that's the final isn't it i think it has to be like yeah no i think it was real good
i i think i think vegas is like vegas and colorado objectively i think are the best
two teams in the nhl it's the it's the west final yeah at least yeah it's definitely the west for
those are the two best teams you guys are writing off a lot of teams here well who are we writing
off in the west let's look at it like carol okay well if we're counting the central as the west
yeah which carolina is very good and deserves all the credit tampa bay obviously won the cup
florida's been a surprise like who but are okay tampa's the only team i say can go up against
those guys and win a seven game series the central is kind of a similar division in terms of like
where the standings are at i think florida is a serious contender really yeah yeah everything
they've shown this year they're a really good team they're on a bit of a lull i want to throw this
out there just quickly on the kings at a certain point you gotta start to ask yourself like i know
they have to pay jonathan quick for about eight more seasons based on that ridiculous extension
but he can't play next year right well i think like how peterson cal peterson's great
like he's been very good i wouldn't have called it's man you gotta goaltenders just one day they
go oh okay that's how you do it because because look at this cal peterson started 25 games he's
8 13 and 4 but his goals against average is 274 to save percentage of 917 on a team that's second
last in its division here's where it gets uglier quick he has started um 19 games eight wins nine
losses two overtime losses a 306 goals against average and 890 save percentage
so i'm just looking at his numbers from the ahl like nothing yeah nothing about his ahl
number suggests he'd be this good nothing he's just got so his best ahl save percentage was 910
and he had that in the 17-18 season but he wasn't even he didn't even have the best safe percentage
on his team that was a 9-12 that belonged to one jack campbell um and then he was at 8-9-6
which was one of the worst on his team and all his nhl numbers are he's he's unbeatable 924-922-917
okay goalies man i remember darcy kemper like i'm pretty sure i even threw
like a couple like snide comments when he was like on minnesota just oh man if this guy's
their future and that they're done he's no good this guy stinks and now he's one of the best
goalies in the league yep one day they just go oh right that's how i oh okay sorry let me put my
glove this way or whatever it is and they just figured it and now he's 30 also god times fast
it is how did that happen andrew shaw retired today i just covered that guy in junior yeah
absolutely kind of wild right and you were older than him then which means you're still older than
him but all the same how it works uh tough for andrew shaw though concussion related that sucks
that really sucks 29 years old i wonder uh part of the reason i was thinking about his junior team
is I wonder if he spoke to Joey Hishon about his decision.
So for those of you who don't know, Andrew Shaw and Joey Hishon
were members of that 2011 Owen Sound Attack team
that ended up winning the entire OHL.
They beat St. Mike's Majors in a big upset,
Game 7, overtime, major score on their own net.
Then they go to the Memorial Cup.
In the Memorial Cup, Joey Hishon, who was selected
first round 17th overall by Colorado,
gets absolutely
demolished at center ice by Jake
McCabe, who was a Sabres draft pick
at the time. He's still in the league.
I forget for who. Kings?
McCabe, I think,
was suspended the rest of the Memorial
Cup, and
Hitchens, his
career was never the same, and I
think he had to eventually make the decision to shut
her down, and I just wonder if he
spoke to him. Those are two guys who should
be playing hockey right now,
but concussions man you can't mess around with that stuff you cannot let's get in the press

The Presser
SDP.
The Steve Dangle
Press Conference.
Do we have time?
Very little time.
Any hockey related. We won't
do any history corners. So I'm going to
tease next episode's press conference oh steve's talking to someone he's talking to a few minutes
steve's talking do you want us to go steve like 10 minutes no it's okay okay he's talking to his
wife on the podcast all right what are you you're just gonna go okay what do you need
no uh my wife's going for a walk with leo okay it's okay sorry guys i tried to do it subtly
nope all right so next podcast i'm going to tease two things we're going to do steve zoo stories
steve you're going to talk about uh animals you fed and we're doing that next show okay next show
and adam's going to do a history corner a recent history corner on his knowledge of the canadian
housing market and how i don't know why someone asked this but and how it's been skyrocketing so
those are two questions we got today i thought they're very interesting so i'm going to tease
them for next episode it's going to be a lot of fun here is our one hockey question we're going
go with for today this is from at lumber keefs should the leafs play with seven defensemen
in must win games in the playoffs we all know spezza and one of jumbo or wayne will be plenty
on the fourth line and you'll probably just have matthews taveras and hyman taking those extra
shifts anyways so it's not like you'd need a forward i thought this was a very interesting
idea do you think they'll go with it i like the idea um and i like that it's innovative
um but no i don't think that's the way to go because i i know that we're going to load up
up front the big guys are going to get the most minutes but the same is true on defense
and you're going to see a ton of muzzin hall you're going to see a ton of riley brody
and the third pair is going to play once every six or seven shifts i call it the chemo team
shift which is yeah you're going to get on the ice breathe for one second and get the hell off
which was him and the Blackhawks last time they won the cup in 2015.
And even the breathing will like one shift.
Yeah.
Kimo, can you short breaths?
Yeah, please.
Yeah.
To the nose, after the mouth bench.
Okay.
Can you, thanks.
Okay.
Try harder next time.
The other thing, Steve,
can I add to that is the seventh defenseman is who in this scenario,
it's probably Travis Dermott, right?
If Bogosian is back and he's healthy,
although he's going to be out for a month, right?
Let's pretend it's ideal.
if it's ideal and you've got bogosian in there with sandin which is i think your ideal third
pair so then your seventh guy is travis dermott uh or or you could have hutton in there but even
so how much value does that give you do you hear the names that we're saying like if we're like it
better be a game breaker yeah right i think i think you you you can do it but at the end of
the day i don't think either you know adding adding a seventh defenseman or just you know
loading up on the guys you have really makes too much of a difference it's it is you go with your
best lineup and your best lineup is four lines three pairs and you have to have a coach who
will play them more than they would normally get played in the regular season unlike previous
coaches that we had and here's how you know they won't um they won't do that format they had the
opportunity to do this game seven uh calder cup final against the texas stars because travis
dermot was fighting an injury but the marlies were rolling lines one through four they were
rolling their fourth line uh correct me if i'm wrong i think it was trevor moore mason marchman
adam brooks for the american hockey league even a few years ago that's stupid it's so good they
were really really good in those playoffs marchman had two goals that game he was so good they had
the opportunity though to go 7d and instead they had the conversation with travis dermot and he
goes you know what i'm sitting this one out he made the decision to sit out game seven of the
calder cup final and they had andrew nielsen in his place and they ended up winning the game six
one so we it sounded like a situation like even if there was an injury it sounded like a situation
where they could have done that dermots uh an enormous reason why they made it all the way to
the calder cup final they were up two nothing on utica in the first round utica won the next two
games in convincing fashion and had the marlies not gotten andreas johnson and travis dermots
back right then they probably lose game five and therefore the series i think demko was in that um
but very tough decision decided to sit game seven calder cup final so i think that's pretty
substantial evidence that they wouldn't do that there it is and that's the steve dangle podcast
well done steve yeah that's reaching back too you know what the marley's did in 2015
no i honestly didn't expect that answer but it was very 18 2018 well we were there we were at
the game but i mean like i can't remember the roster you know there's a reason it's called the
steve dangle podcast well so the marley's were winning he's still convincing i don't think we
were asking for more but that's okay no i'm kidding go are you kidding me okay richard
clune did not play in that game jeremy bracco did not play in that game but because the score was
run up they got their equipment on for the celebration and i've seen the photos nothing
but smiles just win baby just win exactly all right now steve you go for a walk with your family
i'm going to okay and we love you if we could get more whispers on next episode
oh leo's ready upstairs sweet i didn't even have to do any of the wrestling with him
By the way, that was the most NPR this podcast has ever sounded like.
Hey, from NPR, this is me, too close to the microphone,
telling you something that's mildly interesting.
I'll share this with your intellectual friends.
Coming up next, we have Glenn Close to read a book to you.
It's true.
It would be something like that.
Absolutely.
Anyway, we love you.
We'll see you Thursday.
Have a wonderful week.
And we're getting close to the playoffs, baby.
It's going to be exciting.
