The Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction, Canada's sports book.
S-D-P-P, The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
Ladies and gentlemen, today is a historic day.
We have the first African-Canadian, African-American, North American GM of an NHL franchise, Mr. Mike Greer of the San Jose Sharks, which is, you know, I think that's pretty flippant, impressive.
Also today, Haley Wickenheiser promoted to assistant general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
I think that's she's probably got time for it now because she's got her doctorate.
Probably.
There was even more history.
What do we got?
And I texted it to you.
It was like just before the show.
Okay.
Where this show is going to be out of date immediately.
It's going to be out of date before we finish recording.
From Emily Kaplan News, Jessica Campbell hired by the Coachella Valley Firebirds as assistant coach.
First woman to coach behind a bench in the AHL.
All sorts of history.
That's very cool.
Wow.
Happening in the hockey world.
All sorts.
That's awesome.
It's a wonderful thing.
Great to see it happening.
Let's start with Mike Greer.
um you know obviously this is a historic hire and it's a little bit sad when you do look at
the other leagues um what was the tweet sportsnet stats uh tweeted this out this morning wayne
who actually was with the raptors organization for a long time if he's not still uh was the
first black gm in nba history in 1972 uh bob watson of the astros in 1993 uh ozzy newsome
of the ravens in 2002 in the nfl and now mike greer of the sharks in 2022 that is a if you're
keeping track at home 50 year spread between the nba and the nhl wow also it should be mentioned
that bill lucas was named brave's vp of pro personnel in 1976 but you know it's obviously
something that people have talked about for a long long time um i mean we we just had i was
it last season jesse where a coach um accused the nhl or not the nhl the nfl of keeping uh people
out or keeping people remember there was the giant yeah that was the miami dolphins head coach uh this
past off season yeah yeah so you know this is a this is a monumental day and something to be
celebrated mike rear was a great hockey player uh he was okay 14 14 seasons in the nhl it's a long
time he was okay he was okay um obviously he spent two years behind the bench as an assistant
with the devils from 18 to 20 uh a year ago he was hired as an advisor uh to hockey operations
for the new york rangers he also served as a scout for the blackhawks from 14 to 18 this is a life's
dedication in hockey but what does it mean to the nhl well you know what i didn't know and i think
Jesse's also going to point this out.
So why don't you do it?
Mike Greer's family.
Yes.
Yes.
So it's funny we should bring up the Miami Dolphins.
His brother is the general manager of the Miami Dolphins, Chris Greer.
I had no idea.
I didn't know that.
His father was a pro scout, I believe in the NHL.
I want to say, I forget which league, but his father was a scout and then.
No, he was like a, like a president of an NFL team or something.
Oh, was it NFL?
Bob Greer.
Bob Greer was also in management
In professional sports
And then he birthed two sons
He didn't birth it
But he knows someone
He has two sons that are general managers
Now in professional sports
Which is just wild
Bob Greer
Yeah Bob Greer I believe
Was the
Yeah he played in the NFL
I believe
I listened to 32 Thoughts on the way here
and he said it
and I don't remember
exactly what he said.
There was so much information.
Okay, so he's executive scout
New England Patriots,
director of pro scouting
with the Patriots,
director of player personnel,
vice president of player personnel,
and then he moved on
to the Texans for 12 years.
We're both right.
And then,
yeah, wow,
what a family.
Yeah.
The Greers.
And he moved on
to the Miami Dolphins
where he's a consultant
currently from 2017
to right now.
Wow.
They are a sports management
legacy family.
Very impressive.
Very impressive.
sportsy guys yeah sportsy um but jesse i had this is obvious but what does it mean to somebody like
you a fan who is black of the nhl i i always say this if you see it you can believe it you can do
it you know it's it's important just for the visibility for for young black kids to see
a person because they've never seen this before and they need to see something to
to have a realization that it's possible and i'm happy today for all of the young kids who are
in their teens or younger who like i want one day i want to run an nhl team uh now they know it's
it's not just for white people white men because yeah that has literally been the only person who's
ever been the general manager of an nhl team and now it's possible for minorities to do it
yes it's a cool moment um hayley wickenheiser being obviously promoted to doctor uh dr hayley
wickenheiser excuse me uh assistant general manager of the toronto maple leafs also a huge
deal and one of the stories that i can remember that kyle dube is telling was that when he was
hired as the general manager of the leafs he sat down with masai ujiri who's the at that point i
believe president and general manager of the raptors now just president because bobby webster
is the gm but it's really masai's team let's be honest um uh he sat down and he said how can i
succeed here how do i make what's my edge and masai ujiri said hire women hire women and it's
an important thing that the nhl has ignored for a long long time hayley wickenheiser literally had
to be the best women's hockey player arguably one of the best of all time top three i think
mount rushmore you could have cut it off at best best all time no just for this to happen like when
she eventually leaves the leafs organization because she will it won't be to be gm or
president of another team it'll be to go to space like she can just do whatever she wants right
She's killing life
She has one of the most ridiculous resumes
Of any living Canadian
The Masai Ujiri story
It reminds me of the Chicago Blackhawks
GM search because
They interviewed Teresa Resch
Whose management
In the Toronto Raptors
For that position there in Chicago
And she's an NBA person
She's a basketball person
But they thought so highly of her
That they gave her an interview for this NHL GM job
To potentially become the first female
uh general manager in all of the pro sports pro sports i don't believe there has been yeah and so
she's like in the in line to become that i guess within the nba if if she's thought of that highly
in the ad that just uh it's a credit to messiah for for thinking outside the box you know and
the one thing i will say is that the maple leaf sports and entertainment group pays it's like
when you get to that position i'm sure sometimes the reason that some of these people haven't left
is because literally taking,
you could make more as an assistant GM for MLSE
than you would as a GM for a lot of other teams.
Now, it's important that people take those GM steps,
but MLSE is known for paying those exacts,
and that's why a lot of them stick around
for a long, long time.
I'm really excited for everybody today.
It's just great news.
It's fabulous news.
Now, the Leafs did make some other hires as well,
and we're going to do a bit of a full Leafs breakdown
after you can bet that with Dave
because we have a really special prop bet
that we got to run by you there's that and your boy did a little research and a little digging
and i have some theories on what on what the leafs are gonna do i love this okay so we're
gonna run through all of the things because i promised you yesterday we would but the uh
the official toronto maple leafs tweet is general manager kyle dubas announced today that the hockey
club has promoted dr hayley wickenheiser ryan hardy and daryl metcalf two roles of assistant
general manager um and i assume that means they join brandon pridham isn't he an agm he is
assistant to the general manager okay so it's literally dwight from the office yes okay and
then who is the manager who's the gm of the marlies then lawrence gilman it is lawrence
gilman uh no it's another ryan hardy now ryan hardy who remember his first thing was that um
dusty emu controversy and we were like oh tough start for ryan hardy oh right
Pritam is assistant general manager
Ah, okay, so that must be
The special assistant to the general manager
Is Daryl Metcalf
Ah
I see
You see what I mean?
There's been a lot of promotion
Here's the deal, they go, here's a smart person, let's pay them enough
And keep them around
And so they just, the group keeps getting bigger
Which is good
And
So there was that, and what did I want to go to next?
We are going to Montreal tomorrow
We are going to Montreal tomorrow.
We're getting ready for the draft.
Steve is leaving at noon tomorrow.
I'm driving down.
I bring all the equipment in my truck.
And Steve and Jesse and I will be there.
We've got dual streams happening.
So Steve's got his one on Sportsnet.
So I'm sure we're going to kick Steve's ass.
Who's your co-host again?
Colby Armstrong.
Yeah, well, mine's Jesse Blake.
Wow.
Never heard of Colby.
Former thrasher.
Jesse Blake's a former thrasher?
No, Colby Armstrong.
Oh, okay.
Now, before we get to...
You know, like...
Before we get to You Can Bet That.
because, again, I'm really excited about this prop bet.
Steve came up with it.
It's really, it's good.
It's creative.
It's only a Steve bet.
So it's like the Matthews, will he get to 70?
You know what I mean?
Yeah, that didn't work, though.
But it did.
A lot of people did well on that.
I hope so.
Anyway, the Leafs story we thought we couldn't tell.
Strangely enough, we said on yesterday's episode,
yeah, there's a Leafs story from the draft floor we can't tell.
Then somehow late last night, Jonas Siegel reading our minds.
i think it's just it's a it's a well-timed story yes talks about the mitch marner draft that wasn't
the one i was talking about oh that was the one we were talking about steve and i were talking
about the mitch marner versus noah hannifin pick that the leafs had a huge debate over right down
to the draft floor but jesse which one were you talking about i'll remind you guys of what the
one i was talking okay yeah well we can't on the show no so i said we couldn't bring it up
you sneaky you guys know the story so um uh so what we know and this is great because uh jonas
actually called up mark hunter uh and mark hunter said this listen i don't want to throw meg babcock
under the bus i have no beef with him at all but he was just saying if there's a star defenseman
there at number four we got to consider taking the star defenseman instead of a forward but
mark hunter was like no you have to take mitch marner now the quotes in this story
are very tame did you did you hear did did they write noah hannifin yes noah hannifin was the
i mean that was the consensus yeah because i had also heard zach warrensky oh really okay well
maybe they okay the leafs uh here's here's the uh the paragraph the least number one defenseman at
that point was dion finoff who was dealt the following february to ottawa dark times morgan
riley and jake gardner were still young and inexperienced the organization uh also had
drafted swedish forward william william nylander the previous year and there were a handful of
quote star potential defensemen that could be available noah hannifin zach warinski ivan
proverov and thomas shabbat however we know for sure that it was noah hannifin that they argued
about yeah so maybe we can add that to the story we know it was but the leafs really liked hannifin
and they liked proverov but um uh but but i think that the fight on the draft floor was about
hannifin we a long time ago we have a show called could have had a fin it's based on yes marner it's
based on this story that we didn't even tell on the time but it's largely because of our knowledge
on that and that they could have had a fin now we were we were all sneaky sometimes you get a
little bit of heat you get a little heated in arguments with uh not necessarily with co-workers
i guess but but you know you get heated with arguments with business partners whatever
and you you swear a little bit yeah now the quotes given by mark hunter are you know this
was six seven years ago it's no big deal but at the time it mattered a lot to both people and you
can imagine mark hunter big personality mike babcock big personality and they went toe to toe
and i believe there was a comment about size yes and it was we need to draft fucking men yes that's
the that's the purported quote that has made the circles we can't verify it but i've heard a version
of it yeah yeah but it's it's so so it's so interesting right because you have all this
time to prepare and you think okay that can't happen here's how we know here's how we know
this draft's gonna go who went in that draft steve give me the first three picks of that draft uh
connor mcdavid uh who went second oh jack eichel my god i thought you were in this i know no sorry
uh connor mcdavid jack eichel dylan strome and then mitch marner so at that point
you're thinking okay well we gotta have it's it's gonna be one of hannifin or strome probably ahead
it was it was always obviously mcdavid one always obviously eichel number two then there was a flip
flop between marner and strome and strome was mcdavid's line mate was he not he was at very
least his teammate yeah yeah with eerie and uh dermot i think went later in that draft and he
was a teammate he was like 33 yeah in that draft and then uh five yeah so mitch mitch and dylan
strome were a toss-up none of those defensemen were ever really gonna go above those two forwards
stromer marner so it's so funny to think you have all this time to prepare you're supposed to be a
first-class organization although at that point the leafs were not and uh you're still arguing
at the draft table over the fourth overall pick that's so mickey mouse and like you think that's
mickey mouse i think that's like i think that's people putting in their last ditch you think
that's bad i think that's every draft i i get it but you have months to prepare yeah we're here
already the decision is made get out of my face put your energy towards something that we haven't
made a concrete decision on which is not this by the way well i'm sure babs was probably thinking
we haven't made a concrete decision i'm not on board yeah you're not you're not we are
the organization is fuck off no no like seriously there's so much you just signed a guy to a seven
year contract yeah 50 million dollars which is what babs got to coach the team we put in front
of them what's the money for what's the money for steve as we want to give it back as we want to
See the back?
Baps wouldn't play the team they gave him.
Well, exactly.
Exactly.
Stubborn from day one and not stubborn in a productive way.
They had so many picks in 2015 and they were working to get more.
And if he had only put his energy towards the rest of them instead of the
fourth overall pick, that's supposed to be the easiest decision of the weekend.
The easiest one.
Fourth.
Only three guys are going to go above him.
what is your top five you don't even need to go that far what's your top four you have the fourth
pick you don't even need a top five not hard not hard when we arrive in wherever that draft was i
don't remember shove your opinion in your nose all right i thought you're gonna say your patootie i
was no i was gonna say nose the whole time all right i was deciding which nostril and dude it's
the fourth pick it's the fourth pick we're not having no we're not having this fucking discussion
on the draft floor you're being too hard on absolutely i think you're being i think i'm
with jesse on this i think this happens a hundred times on the draft floor i agree and it's
unprofessional every time like we got a show to run we got a fucking show listen if you want to
have a debate over the i don't know 18th pick i still think you should be prepared for that
you should have like a top three by the 18th pick oh for god's sake sure right you should have a list
and i'll hear that four get out of my face we have too much work to do it's the toronto maple
leafs act like it jesus wow it's the fourth pick you have to know right you have to know
you have to know okay if they take marner then we take strome if they take strome then we take
martyr you just you want them to come to that decision right three days before yes instead of
you're on the draft floor mike babcock's like well is it is this a professional sports team
or a school project get out of my face he was the he was the agm or no he was the uh for the
marner draft i believe that was the draft that dubas and hunter did 2015 with no gm yes because
That's right.
Lou wasn't hired in July.
Yeah.
Okay.
Me, you.
Me, you.
At least at this point.
I asked your opinion.
You gave it to me.
I disagree.
Fuck off.
There's got to be a hierarchy.
Like, come on.
Well, the Leafs organizations up until recently have struggled with that for decades.
Hierarchy.
The tail was wagging the dog often.
Can we redraft the top nine?
From 2015?
Yeah, quickly.
Oh, snake draft.
just pull it up let's let's try i'll go first connor mcdavid jack eichel steve you're third
oh for god's sake i think mitch marner's gotta go third don't you think probably third but let
me look you got the whole draft oh yeah i'm gonna go marner but this is closer than i thought you're
again oh me again snake oh my god oh boy oh man that's tough i'll go rant yeah yeah
really good players man oh god adam go um zachary seneshan no i'm kidding um
i'm really struggling i think i think if you're gonna go now obviously you had to take go rant
go ranting right yeah i don't think it's that obvious i mean if you don't take this guy next
you're dumb me i'm gonna beat you up yeah it's got to be proverov doesn't it what oh what no
it's barzal what no i disagree it's barzal next i'm saying aho yeah oh where's aho i don't see
his name he was at 35 oh for fuck's sake he's right around jesus i didn't even see his name
you get the whole draft oh god okay that's a lot okay what's next who's next uh me again so aho
then is my pick no i took aho you took barzal i didn't know we were going outside of the first
round okay fine you took barzal i took aho and it's my turn again uh i take caprizoff
oh caprizoff's in this you fucker you're such a fucker you're a fucker yeah i think caprizoff
was any fourth round or something stupid like fifth or something stupid yeah fifth round yeah
135 oh god i hate you you gotta arrange it by points although i know my next pick i think
kyle connor be my next pick and you'd be right so is it my turn yeah yeah rupe hints oh over hold
on over shabbat over shabbat no and there's another one i missed too that i'm very upset
about keep going also who's next oh wait you're again yeah you got two oh i'll go shabbat i'll
go shabbat but there's another player we're missing here adam you're up that was we already
did nine yeah no but this is funny i like this redrafts man fuck you
just like in the actual draft i stole in the late rounds adam do you want to go i'm just looking at
the first round again here um i he had a great year but i don't know if he's got the like the
resumes there timo meyer like over warrensky and have we taken pro prof are we taking warrensky
yet we've taken the defense oh shabbat i took it yeah yeah we haven't take uh warrensky that's a
good pick i would take warrensky over uh would you oh meyer okay all right that's your call
anyway your pick uh next for the last pick i'd take uh jake debrusk oh thank you for that you
know what's insane connor mcdavid is three points away from 700 now what that's so annoying that's
i hate him don't you hate him what are you looking at uh i'm looking at goalies oh it's not that good
no it's okay it's kind of wild of the players drafted in that draft mitch martyr is second
to connor mcdavid eric sheldon points oh yeah you got him no my next pick i guess we're done
with this bit. We're good. My next pick was going to be
Cirelli.
Oh, Cernak I would have gone with. The goalies
were... No, I know, but Cernak went
in this draft too. Oh, is he in the same draft? Yeah, number two.
I like the Lightning, bro. I know. Same draft.
The goalies were like kind of a...
Aiden Hill is
okay. Mackenzie Black. Man, they even...
The fucking Lightning even got Matthew Joseph
in this draft. In the fourth round.
Who they turned into Nick Paul. Yeah.
God. Who they just signed for seven years.
Manji Apani went sixth round
166. Erickson
Eck? It was a great draft. Oh my god.
One of the best. What a great draft.
You're killing me. I think I cracked the code with release
and now we're not even talking about it. I know.

Nick Kiprios on Nazem Qadri.
I just wanted to give this little note before we get into it.
Kipper says, the number I hear starts at 8 and could go as high as 10 million.
the teams that I'm hearing are out there
two teams that can
write that check right now are
Seattle and Boston can you imagine
Kadri in Boston playing on a line
with Jake DeBrusque who rescinded his
trade request yesterday because he
won the Bruce Cassidy battle
in our draft
so I'm the best GM
Jeff Merrick
on 32 Thoughts throwing out Detroit
is that if
Dylan Larkin doesn't resign or is that
He's re-signing.
So it could be both.
It could be both.
1-2 in Detroit.
It'd be a hell of a 1-2 punch and added fuel to the fire,
besides the fact that Detroit plans on being aggressive this summer.
Kadri's from London, Ontario.
So that's...
Yeah, but he's a Leaf fan.
No, he's not.
He's a Habs fan.
Or grew up a Habs fan.
He's a Leaf fan.
Yeah, that's true.
It's one of those things.
I try to push to the side that Dubas grew up cheering for the Sens.
Oh, I didn't know that.
That's terrible.
I had no idea
Go look at his likes
When they announced the Hall of Fame picks this week
The only one that he clicked like on was Alfie's
I know
Steve, 34 year old man
Following Kyle Dubas' likes
Hey, he's
Older by like two years
How dare you
What were we talking about?
Kadri with London because it's
Halfway between Toronto and Detroit
And Toronto's not going to be in on that
Toronto's just not going to be in on that
no they can't no they can't um so we're getting to the leafs thank you ah toronto's number one
priority going into the next week and a half finding out who the fuck's playing goalie yeah
who the fuck is playing goalie now um uh pierre lebrun tweeted this and we mentioned this on the
show mark andre flurry was willing to waive his no trade to come to toronto at the trade deadline
um and that was leaked and kyle dubas remember he like he was he was pissed at john davidson
about that i don't know i don't know that that means that jd actually uh leaked that or what
but uh but yeah dubas blamed the blackhawks organization kyle davidson that's it john
davidson is the president of columbus or something anyway right um kyle davidson uh who is the new gm
in in chicago uh so mark andre flurry could be a potential uh thing uh if you're wondering
no i have not asked alan walsh about that sort of stuff because i don't also do you think he would
tell us i assure you he would he would not there are like five insiders in the sports we're not a
sport we're not them we're not them no and i'm not hitting up allen for that unless it's brennan
metal free you need someone to be second on the brennan metal trade news i'm your guy i'm so salty
weeks he beat me on that elliot friedman uh is wondering if kemper who has never played in
canada would actually come here if he wanted to if he did make it to market so obviously he and
colorado are uh negotiating right now but he's played in minnesota la arizona and colorado
would he want to come to toronto that sort of spotlight it's really tough on goaltenders here
um and he also says in 32 thoughts that the leafs did pursue matt murray when he was sent to ahl
belleville he said but i don't see that now i wonder what that would look like that it would
have to be a 50 retention or something like that at least um well it's the max allowable but like
i mean adding on to the deal and here's the other thing and i just want to mention this note um
luke fox mentioned this uh in his column uh for sportsnet.ca uh if the leafs can't trade marazic
you got to buy them out right uh it's an option it's not a great one i think they'll be able to
find a home there's enough teams looking for goaltending that they could find a home and get
creative with it and like it's 3.8 two years left it's not it's not good um but there are
worse options i don't know murray for example right i think we also forget that matt murray
can still play hockey or not matt murray peter moraza can still play hockey that he still can
be a decent goalie in the nhl like he struggled with the leafs but his his last couple years with
the uh hurricanes were decent like he was above 900 he was in the 910 area it shouldn't be a
shock that he was bad last year it was shocking how bad he was but uh he he got injured in his
so he only played 12 games a season before gets hurt in his first game returns gets hurt in his
second game third game he plays and then i believe they pause the season it's been about
three years since peter mrazek has played an nhl season yeah so it would cost them if they bought
him out it would cost him a million on the cap this year 800 the next and 1.4 the following two
that's i think four years i think you have a player you know why why buy him out and take
that cap hit when you have somebody a human who you can move somewhere i don't think buying him
out is a very good option at all if he's on the leafs next year it's it's not a catastrophe i just
don't think it's preferred he can still play goal at 3.8 million dollars so it's not necessarily
can he play it's can they afford to get a guy who's going to play more than he can no not with
him right they could they could afford to get a guy uh you know a bigger fish uh but not with him
on the team no it's so interesting this goalie situation with the leafs because it it's so
unknown right now because the the jack campbell negotiations are non-existent uh according to
the reports uh they're not talking and at the least they're kind of just waiting to see how
things go i'm over it like it's done yeah he's gone and then he's gone mckay is gone and then
the marazic they don't really nobody really wants him there at that number but what can you do and
now it's just this wait and see guy game where we have really no answers on the one of the most
important positions on your hockey team starting goaltender uh it'd be great if there was a way to
i i keep going back to this team it's not going to work but it'd be great if there was a way to
get him to arizona and have a all check goalie tandem of him and vimalka um you can't just send
all your problems to arizona i know you can you can there's a price um that's exactly what the
Leafs don't really have what the Coyotes are looking for,
which is picks. Right. I think
I think
with all that in mind,
so if
I mean, if you got it, if
we're not buying him out,
we're not buying him out, then
Mraksic's got to be traded. Yes.
If he's going to be traded, are the Leafs retaining?
If they are not,
it's going to hurt. Yeah,
they may have to, but I mean,
if you're going to retain, you might as well buy him out.
like are you gonna have to retain more so you can save a million dollars yeah because yeah you're
right how long is this damn window or like whatever you want to the window is matthew's
contract right that's what it is and it's possible extension afterward is a second round pick worth
what is it 3.8 you said morassic yeah three point worth that they don't have a second
no like a future second like one of the seconds they have you know you have a million seconds
forever is it will you send a second plus marazic to arizona just for 3.8 million dollars in cap
space i mean we know they'd be open to it because they were willing to work with the nick ritchie
trade is it worth a first marlo is worth the first it's six million yeah no no so is so if
are we to surmise surmise that maybe i don't know if these are still the same prices but at that
time going off what we know six million in cap space was worth the first meaning that it your
your first three picks are probably worth a couple million each against the cap maybe it's hard to
know the value someone put together a good chart of like roughly what each pick is worth uh and
then there's a deal to be made yeah but it might hurt a little now dubas is good he's been pretty
damn good at trades if you look at his trade history not a lot to complain about there everybody
points to the cadre deal but to be honest with you uh if you look at the first cadre deal which
cadre turned down to calgary it would have been a great deal uh so i'm not really that worried
about it i think i think the thing is that i find interesting is not that the leafs need a goalie
it's the fan reaction which has been almost not non-existent like leaf leaf fans i think are so
used to worried of being worried about our defense which is objectively the best it's ever been uh
that at least in our lifetime um i think uh i think and everybody's like well what are we going
to do with the left wing second line forward without mckay ever whomever or kerfoot or whatever
it is not worried about that either you should be worried about the goaltending situation you
should be concerned at this point not worried that they can't get it done but worried that
they don't have a plan uh that has been executed and i think the fact i don't think leaf fans are
used to worrying about a goaltender it's been a long time not like this um you know not like
literally not knowing who the hell the goalie is heading into the season we don't even have a sense
of who it might be yeah it's like could it be this guy there's like 10 guys so this is sort of gonna
lead into the research that okay do your research a little bit show me so uh the transition will be
a little nugget from 32 thoughts that it just my ears perked up for some reason okay so who got
ryan mcdonough this week uh that would be the preds and i have a story on that later oh interesting
the nashville predators who on today's uh 32 thoughts that was released does elliot friedman
say was also win on mcdonough i have not oh the columbus blue jackets the columbus blue jackets
who do the leafs have that might be available who's somewhat comparable to ryan mcdonough
jake muzzin jake muzzin because there's all this stuff with it's funny for a team that's like yeah
sure we'll run it back having to choose between rasmus sandin and jake muzzin feels like a fairly
large decision if columbus could be so enticed could there be some sort of fit there with jake
muzzin going to columbus and is it possible that a goalie could be part of that deal is it possible
i doubt elvis mers lickens is on the table but what about jonas corpus hall interesting is there
a potential there now i don't think he's going to be the starter for the leafs um he didn't he
if i remember correctly wasn't very good last year uh but has been good in the past has been
good in the past i wonder if there's something there here's how it transitions uh to what i
wanted to talk about one two three four five okay there are five teams because what what did we
learn this year uh i think it was doug armstrong who said this on agent provocateur not all the
gms talk to all the gms talk to all the gms they have their pals there are five teams not necessarily
all but the same gm and we'll get to that but there are five teams who since dubas was hired
as general manager of the leafs in spring 2018 five teams uh dubas has made three or more deals
with okay so the kings have got to be one of them they are not oh there are two the ducks the the
kings have made two deals with dubas and they're both huge right uh not the ducks although i thought
the ducks would be on there okay so uh are we playing the guessing game yeah yes okay um montreal
not montreal no i don't think montreal's on there at all
oh placanets yeah so they'd be on the other one once oh oh that's odd um you don't have them
i don't have them for some reason so not la that's odd all right well i'll have to refine
the list but is the list accurate i thought it was what the fuck all right uh the answers
nashville has made three deals columbus has made three and those were fairly recent
florida has made three and we'll talk about them in a moment ottawa is second with four
and two fairly large ones because there was the fun of uh and zaitsev no no it wasn't it wasn't
enough but uh maybe it was we'll get to that um zaitsev cc was in there and there was another
big connor brown was in one of them that was in that deal oh that was in that deal yeah uh number
one st louis oh five deals and all of them were nothing doug armstrong so two of those deals
were deals at the draft and that's important because one of them was a trade down which
i'm just looking at that 25th pick he's gonna do it oh yeah dubas is trading that down he can't
help himself he loves a good trade down you want to bet oh what do you want to put on it i want to
put a montreal smoked meat sandwich you i'll do that i'll do that i'll do that dubious will trade
that okay it'll be between the two of you because if i get involved then it doesn't make sense buy
me two oh i still owe you donuts you already you already downed donuts uh okay so we'll we'll bet
two smoked meat sandwiches on it okay and if jesse wins he has to buy us one we'll get to split it
No, I have to buy you two.
Oh, okay.
Oh, wow.
It's two on two.
It's skin in the game here.
I'm so confident that.
The Leafs will pick 25th.
Okay.
And I think he's going to have, he's going to try to find two Rasmuses in the second
round.
So wait, my skin in the game is if I'm wrong, I have to buy both of you sandwiches.
No, no.
Just Jesse.
I get two.
We both choose sandwiches.
I want one from each.
Yeah.
Unbelievable.
Listen, there's, there's, it may not look like it, but he's got to fill that up.
There's a large.
Jesse's like a condo, right?
There's a lot of floors he's got to fill.
my girlfriend's mom's whenever i eat she's like oh that didn't even fill your earlobe yeah
wow that's such a girlfriend's mom thing to say oh yeah that didn't even fill your earlobe
yes audrey
the oddster so um i was just like i was looking at the leafs uh potential partners here and there's
a few i can see columbus is one of them not a lot uh makes it out of there in terms of chatter and
not a lot makes it out of toronto a lot of the toronto gossip and you got to remember it's framed
this way a lot of the uh gossip from toronto is negative it's about how things don't work and
that's because it doesn't come from toronto maybe i'm a bias leaf fan saying that i'm pretty sure
i'm right though uh but saint louis is someone who i could see the leafs making some sort of
deal with who does saint louis have well do they value so oh oh yes well they don't have them is
the ufa negotiating rights maybe there's something there so if you if you get them on a long-term
deal you can bring the aav down there could be something and if you have an eight-year
i wouldn't be completely shocked to see like we we just brought up corpus allah we just brought
up huso there's probably room for both on the leaf yeah well because corpus sal is not gonna
have a huge salary he doesn't have a huge he's not gonna have a salary am i right who corpus
yeah he's an rfa is he not no he's less than three mil he's under contract it's less than
three mil uh oh 1.3 million dollars wow so it's even less than jack was making wow yeah so tell
me this why do columbus give up corpuscella yeah because they have muslin because they want muslin
yeah that's 1.3 for your backup goalie that's great that's fantastic but who's just the back
in rumors for so long that i don't know i'm i'm willing to entertain it i like if they're in on
if they i feel like we've talked about this before i feel like you don't kick tires on mcdonough
and then if you don't get him you just go all right well never mind we don't need a defenseman
i didn't even want ryan mcdonough like no you're gonna go after the next guy yeah maybe muzzin
could be the next guy i like your husa idea because that's what i've been rooting for this
entire offseason that the leafs go get villi and believe me i thought and i like that you've laid
out a good plan and it makes sense the only thing i would say and i'm just going to flag this is
they've got warrenski and gabrikov on the left side already i want to say we're oh no i want to
say he could play both well they can't jake bean plays both and i don't know if they're going to
bring back borquist or uh blanken blankenberg or whatever but i just blankenberg blankenberg
nick blankenberg is that actually his name yeah oh i thought you were no nick blankenberg
oh i thought you were no that's a man oh okay man all right he's a man now yes yeah but it's it's a
pretty thin decor but like ryan mcdonough plays on the left side and that's who they're trying
and they were still going after him maybe who knows you know who knows maybe they want to be
really strong in the left maybe gavrikov could have been part of the deal here's why this makes
sense too daniel tarasov ah who is a goalie signed at 1.3 million or sorry 1 million dollars
uh to say he's 23 years old he's on the ir right now but he's one of their he's one of their guys
so that would make sense why corpora sala would probably be on his way out interesting steve it's
a potential deal so like again gms they don't talk to everyone so i'm like all right who's
their most familiar dance partner dog armstrong remains an option that uh relationship stayed
intact um this year they made the kyle clifford deal kyle clifford for future considerations
and then clifford re-signed i asked someone recently i go so like does that mean the
leafs are going to give them something because usually it's if they re-sign then it's like a
seventh round pick i was told probably not so it's just here's kyle clifford ottawa is a really
interesting one because that cc zeitz have deal especially heavy financial implications in that
certainly right so whenever i saw the leafs and sends make a deal i couldn't help but think
that ownership was somewhat involved there was a directive to pierre dorian here we need to make
this happen obviously ownership is in enormous flux uh eugene melnick passed away his family
is running the show they bought out they just bought out colin white by the way today yeah
just a couple minutes ago oh wow yeah okay well yeah interesting i just thought i'd throw that
out there it's absolutely no it's it's highly relevant so does does the the does the fluctuating
situation make it more or less likely that dubas and dorian make another deal because of that
familiarity uh david poyle and uh kyle dubas they've worked on creative deals together they've
done a lot of that nhl ahl stuff sort of like uh like with philippe myers we talked about yesterday
um florida there's an asterisk on that one because uh bill zito became the gm of the panthers
after dubas was gm of the leafs and after the first deal there so it's not like dubas has made
three with bills with bill and also they're now division rivals i think when the leafs in florida
panthers were trading before they the panthers were kind of a non-factor based on his trade
history dubas doesn't care much for that he trades with no other teams that do all other teams do
yeah and like like ottawa claims up and down that they're not going to trade within the division and
they trade with the leafs consistently exactly um so uh nashville columbus i think is a big
possibility florida i'm not looking at nearly as much for the reason that you mentioned
The team that I sort of want to throw out there as interesting is Vancouver because he's not GM there, but he is the president, Jim Rutherford.
Jim Rutherford and Kyle Dubas made beautiful music together.
They made lots of deals and some big deals.
Uh, they did Kapanen for a first that got the Leafs roadie on a mirror off.
Um, they did the Jared McCann deal.
and jesse i had you bring up nhl trade tracker so remember i think i know where you're going
yeah remember uh dubas and mark hunter were running the show for the leafs uh in between
dave nonis who was uh fired end of april 2015 and lou lamorello was hired july 23rd 2015
read that trade there jesse uh july 1st 2015 the leafs acquired casperi kapanen scott harrington
Nick Spalling a conditional first and a 2016 third in exchange for to the Pittsburgh Penguins
Phil Kessel Tim Erickson Tyler Biggs in a conditional second round pick now I think it
was Rutherford who was in charge when they made that deal and we were like oh man he should be
fired man if I say you should be fired that is a guarantee that you're going to win the cup
eventually as a general manager within five years Mr. Joe Sackett as we know and then if you if you
go to the next page you want more trades yeah because there's going to be some overlap before
lou is hired uh there was another deal with the nashville predators there taylor back for jamie
devan it's not a big deal but i'm trying to think of who the leafs are going to make a deal with
this week and then lou came in on picture day and said half the roster is gone including that guy
goodbye goodbye yeah the next deal after the taylor beck for jamie devan one is michael
grabner for five people carter verhage ouch chris gibson uh tom nielsen taylor beck and matt finn
former second round finna so matt finna get traded on picture day um so if we're looking at the the
teams that dubas makes the most deals with st louis ottawa florida with an asterisk um nashville
and i'm gonna there's something there with jim rutherford because that relationship obviously
continued um this trade deadline when the leaf sent travis dermot to the canucks now their gm
is patrick alvin it's not rutherford but alvin alvin sorry but we know there's a relationship
now uh another person whose name has come up um very very divisive among and we're moving on from
goaltending here for a second but trade partners i think this matters one trade avenue that almost
opened up last spring was with the edmonton oilers obviously it was much talked about zach hyman was
going to edmonton it was a question of whether it was going to be a seven or an eight-year deal
the leafs decided ultimately that what the oilers were offering which i believe went as high as a
fifth round pick i don't know for his negotiating rights um uh didn't match what they thought it
was worth they didn't go with it they didn't take it and zach hyman signed for seven years in
edmonton and so be it now i wonder if they don't revisit things because edmonton is apparently very
interested in jack campbell and yessi pull yarvey uh is apparently available for trade uh now he's
an rfa and obviously uh rfas come with a little bit more in terms of cost if they're on an expired
deal uh you're you would be swapping negotiating rights but uh you know pull your rv would become
property of the leafs i wonder because they're saying pull your rv probably a third round pick
gets them that's that's what i really yeah probably a third if you trade jack hamill's
negotiating rights does that then become a fifth or a sixth and can you as the leafs which you
don't want to do you've only got four picks in this draft but can you then say we can justify
affording that because pull your rv is probably gonna be what a two million dollar player next
there's something there there's something there and again listen 32 thoughts the oilers have
they have a lot of work to do um there's other guys who they need to shop um but pull the rv
even though his contract is up would be money out the door yes in a way yeah um well because they
don't have to re-sign him and i think it would give him the fresh start that he's been looking
for for three years like since shirely and he was drafted pretty much 100 and i wanted to um
you know a guy who was on fire and then he wasn't uh looked to be the guy that the oilers drafted
then he sort of wasn't um last season um good on the defensive side of the puck like he seems like
the guy that would be perfect for their top six yeah you put him put him with tavar yeah yeah i'd
say middle middle six would you say middle six yeah he he could he could play on that second
line he's I mean he's got the skill set to do it he does he sort of reminds me of Mikheyev in some
regard and that's a compliment also a criticism mostly a compliment like we're you know the
Leafs team at their best should Ilya Mikheyev be on the second line no could he yeah would it be
the worst thing in the world no the Oilers are interesting because they're competing with the
least for the same position in that they both have zero goaltending and the oilers even well
they're in an advantage position because they don't have marazic contracts sitting there and
they have actually money to spend and they need two goaltenders because smith it he's probably
going to go on ir or retire and costan's gone over back to europe forgot about that well they
do have stewart skinner they do have stewart skinner that's a big leg up the leafs don't have
that on the way i mean unless shelgren takes you know improves by leaps and bounds um oh man
i'm worried i'm worried and like listen it's a problem that could be fixed
to like 48 hours from now right but edmonton's not in the situation where they can just
do the normal goaltender acquirements you know just go pay one guy a bunch of money and that's
starting goaltender the thing that they can just go get campbell and that's that's the thing and
the leafs don't have that advantage where they have to finagle this whole cap situation and find
two goalies really it's wild to me that because it really did seem imminent that something would
happen yesterday and it didn't and still today nothing from which front white got bought out
trades well there's so much like this i think you gotta get close to the you gotta get closer to
to that deadline oh fuck it's like what alan always says well are we though you got time
usually it's the draft floor man like they're still building here i think alan always says
in in the nhl deadlines clear the mind nothing gets that they're not they're not close they're
not close it's like william neil andrews contract they're not close okay we're going to start
negotiating 9 a.m of the day of the expiry okay let's get it faxed in the nhl at 2 30 when our
last opportunity will be at 3 p.m there's there's a lot that i think is going to happen
uh at the draft i just don't think it happened yet the colin white buyout is interesting if i'm
an ottawa fan i'm probably like a little disappointed in the buyout because maybe it
hints towards the direction the team is going because they're saving 10 million dollars in
actual cash and that seems to be the motivation for the buyout is hey we're gonna save 10 million
dollars here let's do this and is is ottawa trying to cut costs for their organization
listen he's been disappointing but that's your first round pick from 2015
he had 10 points in 24 games that's not awful that what's awful is that he played 24 games
so my theory makes sense yeah that it's they're really doing it for the money more than anything
um i think is this calling white yeah so they're true it's true oh that's my bet because they're
gonna i think they've been they've been linked to him forever and i uh here's the thing i get
the sense that because where is he from so you free up this cash so you can spend it not so you
can cut costs is from that boss that's good if you're no no not no oh my bad no that was better
he's from hurst ontario um he he's been linked to ottawa for a while yeah um and it's just outside
of cochran by the way i like that idea and and elliot mentioned that toronto might have a look
at him too but then somebody else was it elliot that mentioned somebody mentioned that toronto
might have a look at him too but then somebody else would have to go on the roster but reality
is he's been linked to ottawa for a long long time seems like he wants to come back colin white's
buyout is interesting um because let me just have a look at this let me explain this one to you
because fourth line center i feel like you could do a lot worse than colin white oh i think you
could but here's the thing this was supposed to be sort of his big year but he got injured and i
think he had surgery right before shoulder surgery i think and you know his bio cost to the
is less than a million bucks a year it's 875 basically a year um so you know it's basically
the cost of a somebody that you can put in the ahl so it's no big deal they're not going to be
a cap team they said unless they sell out the building every night that's what they said i don't
know jeru is the guy that at least sells some tickets for you the the buyout as i get more and
more information as it literally just happened it makes a lot of sense for ottawa it was it was
he's like 15 million bucks three years uh 4.75 million dollars a year that's a lot of money for
colin white who's not producing at a five million dollar pace and uh your your penalties are
literally less than a million dollars per year for six years that's really because he's under
20 25 or under 26 uh it's a one-third buyout instead of the two-thirds buyout so they're
saving a whole ton of money that's nearly they're saving four million dollars a year plus ten
million dollars in cash this bio made complete sense and i guess great on auto for doing it it
does but the timing uh i find particularly titillating because freeze them up for the
draft and make them up for the draft telling you shrew and free shrew's a free agent though
like i'm saying draft they have the space to do both come on now yeah this is a lot of free money
for ottawa um okay so so pull your rv i wanted to bring up because obviously leaf fans have liked
him for a while um this is this is interesting one leaf fans were sort of pissed about this but
i feel like some somewhere and i think some got it before the rasmus sandin injury that ultimately
held him out till well most of the season uh he was very very good on the on the uh on the leafs
blue line and a lot of people if you were to ask them uh would say he was of the two better than
timothy lilligren although some of the advanced numbers support that timothy lilligren was much
better it depends on what how you want to look at it the reality is rasmus sandin we think probably
has a higher ceiling than timothy lilligren seems like he's a part of the future and you mentioned
it earlier steve are you choosing between if your choice is rasmus sandin or jake muzzin
where are you going to go and if you kind of do need to get a little bit younger there you kind
do need to be a little bit more cost effective and from everything we've heard not only was he
not happy with his ice time which i can understand absolutely absolutely he was people dressed
i think sheldon keith went to his security blanket a little bit too much
on this one i think uh i think he's absolutely rasmus sandin has a point uh i think beyond that
though you know we're talking about the future of the franchise here rasmus sandin i think is
more where the future is right uh a hundred percent and i'll talk about another moment
because this this past season when Sandin probably shouldn't have been getting scratched
um was a bad one but another one I think he scored if I'm not mistaken I think he scored
in game three of the Leafs Hab series the next game he was scratched now the Leafs did win that
game for nothing uh Dermott was put in there for him but then they went back to Sandin in game five
and he had two giveaways that led to goals and he never was really able to get it back
and i mean yes game four was a really good game but then you try to put the guy back in
and let him have that yeah so if i'm sandy and i'm like all right so that's two years in a row now
that you didn't like i just i got to two years in a row now i got to sit and watch you lose
yeah yeah i don't want to do that anymore so you first of all sitting and watching you lose is
boring any fan could do that uh number two the more i sit and watch you lose the less i can
command right so if he's being difficult in these contract negotiations that's why i'd argue uh no
this is money that i should be getting i'm i'm better than you've allowed me to be that's fair
Now, I'm looking at the Leafs defense. You got Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin, TJ Brody,
all the highest paid, right? Rielly at seven and a half, Muzzin at 5.6, and TJ Brody at five.
Then you've got Hall, Lilligren, and Giordano. So Lilligren, 1.4, Giordano, 800,000. Both of
those are two-year deals. Justin Hall at 2 million has one more season left. You could
potentially go into next season with that. But it seems as though Justin Hall is on the way out.
I think so. And there will be takers for Hall. He's a right shot defenseman who's played many NHL games, has been pretty good. He was very, very good with Jake Muzzin, one of the bright spots against Columbus in the lockout, or not the lockout year, the COVID year, or COVID year one, that is.
bubble i would say bubble um rasmus sandin my question is where does he fit in this lineup
because you had morgan riley you had muzz and brody for some reason i never understood why
they did that i know they played well together but brody seemed like the first guy that morgan
riley really jived with and then oh it's well muzzin and brody really shut things down yeah
but then you're playing labushkin with riley their mission i think i think they have two missions
fill up the net figure out who your goalie is and number two stop dicking around your top
defenseman please for once for once yeah stop asking morgan riley to make sacrifices can you
play with fucking everyone what other top defenseman has to deal with that no just put tj
brody in there and then build after that or or get a guy put someone there and leave them there
for god's sake now do you think that what you saw from giordano gives you enough confidence that he
can carry if he's a three four guy and he's the fourth best does did you see enough from him that
say maybe for the first 40 games he's in the three four spot and you have sanding in the five six
spot and then maybe if sanding takes enough steps you can switch them around in the next two years
i think you should uh i think you're on the right track like i think you can alternate them
you know maybe you do i mean coaches are weird this way you do you do it one way at home you
do it one way on the road you know so you're playing 15 uh 14 15 minutes at home and you're
playing 18 19 on the road something like that and sandy's also a great power play guy yeah i mean
played a lot of minutes on the power play if i'm sandin i i look at the giordano signing and i go
fuck like how do i get in man well i think it's that they got to make they got to make a decision
with jake munson and don't forget about like snide little comments like i i remember things like
remember sheldon keith the one time uh sandin played with riley and it was sandy oh it's bad
of riley got caved they did get caved but uh they go uh i think it was do you think you're
gonna go back to that and he's like no i don't think i am and i was just like oh man i know
you're emotional and you're you're just super not helping the best thing sheldon keith did last
season was not talk the best thing he did because every time he did it seemed to be something like
that right it's sandy and it's trading sandy in a way you can help the goaltending situation
oh you better be getting a winner man you better be getting something i i think that i was talking
to uh tic-tac-tomar about this and he was just like how do you win a sandy trade like they're
gonna regret it they are and it just i don't know i'm trying to picture the leafs and how
successful they've been with trading away young impressive players and we always seem to regret
it don't we it's not something they do very often i think dubas has always doubled down on the young
players he's picked do they it's not something they do very often but because it's not something
they do very often or it's not something they do very often because it's something you just
shouldn't do oh who's who have they shipped out well it's been a while it's been a while since
they've done that sort of shit it has been a while i just think of generally when the leafs
are giving away the best player in a trade they lose not some cadre uh is a big one um
caponin is a rare example of that sort of working kessel uh i mean it worked out for kessel and it
worked out for the leafs least needed that salary anderson out of that right because they got the
first round pick oh and they flipped it to and i'm okay yeah yeah okay so like there's i'm just
i'm reaching here sure i just i look at it and i say if the contract's going to be too much
you know if you'd rather use that cap space on your goaltender but it's going to be justin hall
level like it's going to be 1.5 to 2 million like what's what he wants more than lilligren or wants
about what lilligren's getting it's not going to be that much for sandin yeah no but it's tricky
because the Leafs want him at like 900 to a million,
and I think he wants it at like 300,000 more,
which seems like a small thing, but it's a big thing.
I don't know what this guy's up to.
I don't either. I don't either.
I think if it was 1.5, it'd be done right now.
Yeah, yeah.
I think he's asking for more than that.
They gave Dermott 1.5, man.
Yeah, but they gave Lilligren 1.4,
and Lilligren is objectively a way better defenseman
than than Dermott was a way better defenseman than Dermott last year yeah but maybe Lilligren
was just ready to sign the contract I don't know I was about to say they didn't screw Lilligren
around as much but they kind of did but he also wasn't ready yeah um every every time he played
I was like oh Tim I was rooting for you if it's last year he was good if it's 1.5 I would have
given that to Sandian already could be a term thing maybe yeah maybe it's your three and four
or something like that or you know fight between that who knows um two guys that have not received
qualifying offers yet and the deadline is quickly approaching pierre engvall do you give him a
qualifying offer his contract's up it is rfa i think it's 1.25 is his qo yeah because it's 100
of your deal right yeah oh my god yeah like heading into last season he wasn't worth it
By the end of last season, he was a bargain.
Absolutely.
Yeah, no, I'd give him a qualifying offer.
Here's the one that's harder.
Same age, Andre Kasha.
And same price.
And he was 2.5, eh?
Oh, was he 2.5?
Yeah, he was 2.5.
No, he's 125.
Are you serious?
Nick Ritchie was a 2.5.
Oh, right.
Or two or something like that.
Oh, man.
Yeah, I'd do it.
But the concussion history is concerning.
Yes.
You have to take that into account.
I do, but the cold business mind says 1.25.
If things go south, you can bury it.
Okay.
Yeah, there's no risk.
There's no risk to keeping him.
I mean, you want to make sure he's fully healthy.
I highly doubt he was.
No.
At the end of the season.
um i think people are forgetting how good he was he was he was a really good player
for the leafs and he just got fucking completely beamed by matt duchesne kind of a accidental play
i hope he's able to come back um nick abruzzese will be there this year matt and eyes may not
be available till after the trade deadline yes um but one name that is popping up to me now and
this has popped up to Leaf fans forever since he got here is Alexander Kerfoot. One year left,
$3.5 million. You could argue that right now he's at the top of his value because teams like
control. They like salaried control, especially in a flat cap era. So a guy going into the trade
deadline where it used to be like, oh, if you're an expiring deal, that's when you're at your
height. That's great. Now it's, oh, he's got a couple of years left. Now I'll pay a premium for
is alexander kerfoot a guy that they're going to hang on to
or is he a guy that in a week and a half we go oh he's gone
they were never really able to find a home for him but he's so he's so versatile and he's a big
part of that penalty kill he is a big part of that penalty kill man they got some really tough
decisions to make i could see vancouver being an interesting fit um supposedly there was some
noise around jason dickinson and that would provide an opening he doesn't make the same
amount of money as his cap hit um now that colin white's bought out and we know the leafs and
sins are a frequent trade partner what about the sense like i i seems to fit what they're at which
is speed speed speed speed speed well and i'm also just avoiding saying arizona every single time
but kerfoot's a you see whenever arizona comes up and i apologize to coyotes fans but this is
sort of how they've played it recently yeah they've they've taken on bad money for or dead
money for draft picks that's what they've done that's the the rebuild plan kerfoot is not dead
money he's not a bad player he's a great player he's worth his three and a half why arizona in
that one in that particular instance is there there are other people looking for third and
potentially second line centers yeah but we need someone to play we need like living breathing
humans to uh play for us and you make less than your cap hit and uh if you're any good which we
trust you will be at the deadline we'll trade you kerfoot's contract is very interesting too
because it's mostly paid out in signing bonus which we like uh which we know a lot of teams
like his his base salary is only 750 000 that a team will have to pay out so i didn't even know
that so he he will have a cap hit of 3.5 million the leafs i believe have already paid him his
bonus july 1st so for a cap july 13th or do they pay july 1st i think it's july 1st so they already
paid it oh july 1st every year oh no matter what oh okay sorry my bad my bad so yeah you think
they're delaying an idiot so for a cap of 3.5 mil he can be had for 750 in actual cash yeah
if you're if you're a team like arizona as we always say that's a really appealing player the
leaf should not be giving him away no no if you get something you should get value maybe he for
maybe he helps you find the goalie for a team that's looking to save real world dollars you're
spending 800k on a player whose cap hit is 3.5 that's very advantageous and maybe you can
advantageous you can replace him for a player who's not as useful but also cost less in a
colin white i'd love to know how that shoulder is but the leafs love reclamation projects they do
all the way back to tyler ennis i just think sam gagne is happening yeah for that depth role it
just i don't know okay it just fits what they do too well former leaf uh sam gagne marley
for a second bestie of john tavaris he would uh automatically be thrown into the penalty kill
that's going to be a little in flux um losing mckay of is difficult for the penalty kill
spezza did a lot of face-offs on the penalty kill and um if they don't qualify kasha he was also on
the penalty kill so you would actually kind of you'd really need sam gone boy would it be your
secondary face-off would have been great to have kasha in that lightning series uh well he did play
but like it would have been great to have healthy kasha yeah that lightning series could have uh
That deadline, by the way, is Monday at 5 is the QO deadline.
So they have all weekend, you know.
They're probably going to take their damn time with it.
Oh, it's after the draft.
Yeah, it's Monday at 5 p.m. is the QO deadline.
Yeah, so I wouldn't read into it then.
I would say, yeah, they're busy.
Two guys that Kyle Dubas deserves a ton of credit for signing to these contracts are
Kompf and Bunting.
Kompf, another year at $1,500.
Bunting, another year at $950,000.
dollars by the way bunting had 60 points last year for 950 grand value wise per per point one
of the better deals in the nhl uh obviously they're both ufas at going into next year but
he's good at finding players like that players like comp players like bunting who can provide
value and jump in and obviously last year we saw the kasha bunting richie uh comp thing and only
one of those guys really didn't work another really big factor in that lightning series by
the way is not having bunting at 100 yeah god that's such a killer yeah it is it is so close
and yet so far so there are some choices to be made and obviously it's never going to be perfect
i wonder too if they liked colin blackwell enough to bring him back
like he seemed like a good energy guy but not a lot happened like he was if i'm not mistaken
good speed he was a penalty kill guy and he can be a face-off guy so so what does your fourth line
look like because again i i hate putting rookies on the fourth line like why are you doing that
generally i think it's a waste of time so if it's like a rotation sort of could you have blackwell
and gagne but now i think we're getting into the nitty-gritty well and i i wanted to because also
in the nitty-gritty is wayne simmons one more year 900 grand yes i can get i get it you can
bury the deal uh that's gonna happen do you think he's coming back yeah i do um i i keep saying this
It's a long season and people aren't appreciating that.
Well, is he on your best roster?
No, but teams don't often ice their best roster.
Rarely, if ever.
Rarely, yeah.
Maybe game one.
There's a lot of teams who will be, they'll bury a guy and they'll, you know, they'll call him up when the time is right.
Or there are teams who are like, we're going to wait until Cole Caulfield has done college and then we're going to score goals.
you know they're the the leafs were prepared to be like uh we'll wait for matthew nye's season
to be done and then we're we'll score some more goals you know so it's a long season and he's a
he's a i think he's a guy who likes spezza when he's done playing he'll be a member of the team
yeah and it doesn't really make sense to move off of a serviceable nhl player who makes
$900,000. Oh, there's no moving
off him. It's does he play for the
Leafs or the Marlies. Right, but he'll spend time
with the Leafs because you need humans to play
on your hockey team, and eventually guys get injured, and
he's good enough to make your lineup, and
he'll be there. There's no worry about that.
He's not going to play every day,
but no, he'll be
there. Okay.

the cadillac definition of luxury uh shana goldman uh at hey shay on twitter who you obviously know
and love uh put together a list of three people that she thinks are going to be overpaid or at
least potentially overpaid prime candidates for overpayment and nhl free agency can you name them
overpaid and free just gas there's nothing i'm not putting bets on this jack campbell
elia mccabe and uh do the rangers have anyone ryan strome okay well uh you got one of them
can i guess ryan strome is one of them yes jesse go ahead um i'm gonna guess pk super
uh he is an unrestricted free agent yeah is patrick linea ufa no he's rfa johnny goudreau
and philip forsberg whoa okay now you think that forsberg deal that deal is getting done
get out of here he's not gonna be a ufa if he is this is gonna be the most bonkers class of
reagents we've ever seen but uh no overpayment i don't know how you overpay for philip forsberg
unless you're in the 12 million dollar range i think he's gonna come in at nine gadreau could
be seven or eight maybe nine depending upon how the cadre bidding goes but cadre could go to 10
these are the names ben charot josh manson and ryan strome and i just thought it was interesting
given that Ben Chirot, obviously, you know,
Florida just flipped a first round pick for this guy.
I would be shocked if they didn't resign him.
I really liked Josh Manson on the Avs.
I liked him there.
I liked him there a lot.
There's a lot of questions about whether or not
he goes right back to Anaheim.
Oh, and maybe like, I think it was Freed's that said,
maybe he's the first captain in the post-Getzlaff era, right?
He's been there his whole career, his family.
I think he's got kids.
um maybe it makes a whole lot of sense you leave go in a cup and to come back
yeah it's happened it's happened that'd be interesting wasn't didn't one of doug wade
or mark recchi do it when they won in carolina they're just like all right thanks and they
just left with their cup ring i don't know i don't remember i can't remember either i want
to say it was one of those two yeah so charotte uh uh so evolving hockey has him at a four-year
contract he is 31 hard miles but deep miles in the playoffs 5.46 million dollar cap hit are you
comfortable with about that's what he's projected to be worth projection that they believe he's
going to get yeah or is that what they project he's gonna get or what he's worth that's what
they're projecting he's gonna get okay no thank you that's a no thank you so you wouldn't you
wouldn't give too much money 22 million bucks over the next four years no even though florida
gave up a first round pick for him no what side does shrop play uh right side right side yeah i
believe oh no he's a lefty he's a lefty i'm wrong lefty no five million dollars no uh josh i think
he can't he can play the right yeah josh manson he also plays his stick in your back um that's
that's the game he plays he loves a good uh i like the spinal xylophone yeah
ring loves that josh manson who also likes to do that the evolving hockey according to shana
has him at a four-year contract average value of about four million bucks
i would do that seems extraordinarily reasonable yes yes um however if it gets into a bidding war
situation now ryan strome i'm curious why you guessed ryan strome uh because she covers the
rangers and i know he wasn't very good for them that's really that's very smart very nice i like
that evolving hockey projects a seven-year deal with an average annual value remember these are
projections yeah how high do you think this is that's the projection from evolving hockey
how many points do you have last season i think he did pretty damn well um they did score he had
54 points in 74 games 21 goals 33 assists setter who is six feet tall 28 years old
what's the term what's the term on us it's it let's say it's a full seven-year deal
seven years yeah well okay so no you don't do a seven-year deal no with a 28 year old any
denomination okay all right maybe league man so okay so let's say it's a four-year deal uh
four-year deal although i i think a player like him if you're a center and you're that you're the
bell of the ball after nasm cadre i'm asking for seven years 575 jesse 6.4 so it could evolving
hockey at seven years they're saying around 7.15 million dollars what now if he takes fewer years
his cap could stay in the high six to early seven range this is a guy they she says that taking on
to gamble on a player who has thrived alongside
Artemi Panarin.
Just hasn't had much time
to show what he can do without him.
A signing team would obviously want to have an elite
winger. I'm going to tell you something that I think
is going to happen. Seattle Kraken.
They have all the money.
It starts with a six and he goes to
Seattle.
You know who else they got today? Steve
Breer. Steve Breer.
Leafs goalie coach.
That will be
interesting because i've heard the question with him uh did the leafs have a goalie coaching
problem or did they have a goalie talent problem and now he is going to get philip grubauer who's
got the talent but ryan strome yeah sorry um are we like this is ryan strome who was drafted in
2009 ryan strome what's his career high in goals uh 2009 right career high in goals came this year
at 21.
Oh.
Who the fuck?
Guys,
you guys are saying this,
but Kevin Hayes
just got a seven million.
How many?
Kevin Hayes is a center
at least.
Ryan Strom is a center.
Is he?
Yes.
I thought he was a winger.
No, he's a center.
Listed as a center.
Is he one of those
combo guys?
No, he plays with Panarin.
Yeah, he plays
on the right side too,
on the right wing as well.
Cap, friendly, Rangers.
I'm going to find out.
I swear he does both.
Yeah, he does both.
Yeah, he must be
one of those guys.
He can play center.
Daily faceoff from Rangers.
oh steve doesn't even sorry i don't watch every fucking game relax he can't um oh you like hockey
name every game ever oh okay fifth overall pick 2011 second round center second line center artemi
panarin and andrew kopp it was panarin strome kopp man that's a big hit for the rangers kevin
hayes got that deal man from philly now i know it's philly and i know they're crazy frege frege
talked about um the potential of evan rodriguez going to new york i would throw colin white in
there as well rodriguez was for the second line slot white wouldn't be that but he'd be part of
the contingent i think it starts with the six i think that's reasonable for for what ryan strome
is for for what he's done so far in his career he's 28 it starts with a six but i wouldn't go
much higher than that if you have jesse if you have yeah a really good second like a really
good winger like an elite winger like panarin on on your second line it's it's hard to find
players who can play with those elite guys like look at what happened and i i everybody's beaten
this horse to death but i feel like lucic with with uh mcdavid right it's sort of like yeah okay
lucic had played with good players before but could not skate with mcdavid it's been hard to
find people that can other than leon dry sidle right lucic at least had a unique skill set
in that he is a truck that can beat the shit of you yeah ryan strome is a winger who scored 50
some points like there are so many of those you don't need to pay six million dollars for that
somebody might okay well you really shouldn't someone might for sure but you really shouldn't
i think i think we might be underrating how successful that rangers team was at what they
were doing and that that second line was a big part of it and ryan shum was proven that he can
take it he could be a second line center on a team that goes to these in conference finals
i keep forgetting he's okay him being a center you know what you know what i should snap out of it
he's the center jack the price of three million bucks second line centers this was the case a
couple years ago and it would it would definitely be the case this year had the cap continued to
go up the way it was the going rate for a good second line center in the nhl is like seven
million bucks it is you know what which is ryan strome man oh i got something i don't know go
jesse go jesse clip this clip it right in this part right now yep would you rather have oh boy
John Tavares
At 11 million dollars
As your second line center
Or
Ryan Strom at
6.7 million dollars
As your second line center on the Toronto Maple Leafs
Steve Dangle and Adam Wilde
John Tavares
John Tavares
All day
That extra cap space doesn't entice you?
No
The extra cap space gets you
John Tavares
End clip
um okay okay so you don't give you're you're you're hesitant about giving seven million dollars
i'm gonna make some up shana didn't come up with these ones you're hesitant about giving seven
million dollars to uh strom okay would you give term to 35 year old evgeny malkin because evgeny
malkin's gonna cost you eight or nine million minimum probably like there's a world where
Evgeny Malkin, who is a point-of-game player,
even though he played half the season last year,
there's a world where he's a 10, 10.5.
Here's the thing about Evgeny Malkin
when he's healthy.
He's Evgeny Malkin!
That's one of the best players in the world.
Yeah. That's why I'm not asking
about amount of money. I'm asking about term.
No, somebody will give him
two, three years. What if he wants five?
He's not going to get five. What if he wants four?
He could get four. He'd get four.
Yeah. Well, you get Malkin. I wouldn't
go higher than that, but yeah, I'd do four.
it's malkin you're you're trying to if you're signing malkin right now your team is trying
to win a championship within that four-year window and you take a shot it's counterintuitive
i don't hate that that much term and money to a player that old it's malkin hey you know what
malkin okay ltir exists when he's 39 we know that the penguins are doing everything they can to get
letang under contract it's looking more and more like i mean listen deadlines clear the mind as we
always say but who'd you hear that from uh who does he represent everybody everyone every player
but the one thing i will say is that chris is saying um malcolm looks more and more like he
could be somewhere else it could change but that's what what it's looking like at this point pk suban
is another interesting name that comes up not because he's ever going to make close to nine
million bucks a year again but what does what is a he's 33 now by the way i hate that how is pk that
old how are we this old pk suban we've always been one year older than him i just remember when
we were all kids together and he's winning a norris trophy i'm fascinated to see where this
goes because he he got 22 points last year on the shittiest new jersey devils team since wayne
gretzky called them a mickey mouse franchise what what do uh that's a real quote by the way look it
up pk it has always been sort of linked to toronto i don't think i don't see that being a fit now
but what does he bring now because he's had a pretty severe back injury yeah and what is he
worth i don't know what i i have no i i have no idea how many years i have no idea how much money
i don't know how you value pk sueman at this point so like i just said when malkin is healthy he's
malkin that's true when pk is healthy he's not the pk you remember like he's he's taking he's
taken a step backward
unfortunately and like i like the
guy um but
he's not he's not
a 50 point guy anymore maybe he's not capable
of competing for the norris trophy anymore
right he's not um
and that's fine not everyone
is you know but jesus
look at look at the race this year yeah
adam fox wasn't even nominated
yep you know the reigning winner wasn't
even nominated um
i don't
have a read
on that situation because listen like it or not he does come with some baggage listen it's a league
that talks it's very insular and some players have a problem with the guy and and some players
love them and some players love them depends on who you talk to listen there's tons of players
in the league like that yeah he's just he's just probably more out front of it right it's you know
Not a fair comparison
But he's a right-handed player who scores a lot of points
Right-handed defenseman who scores a lot of points
Tony D'Angelo
Some players can get along with him
Others don't want to punch him in the face
They have punched him in the face
He got punched in the face by a teammate
I've never heard that story
Now Piguet is nowhere close to that
Personality aside
There's a very
It's a very useful way to build your roster
When you're filling out the bottom
halves and you add guys who have been there done that but are past their prime yes it's it works
across pro sports where those outer edges of your roster where you have your stars and then they're
supported by former stars who have now accepted their roles as lesser players ray allen on the
heat right victor aladipo that's such a miami heat uh this playoffs he's a former star who's
now in this in this bench role and but that's a guy who knows what it's like to be a star and
he's except this other role and if cory perry is a better there's an example from yeah there's a guy
who's been there done that jason spezza if you want to do that as well if if pk
geo if pk can have the second half of his career where he's the ex-north trophy guy who's now the
third pairing defenseman and knows that role that could be a very good piece on a championship team
sure yeah i'm fascinated to see where who signs them i think it's gonna be a very good team a
name i have not seen brought up much but has not re-signed as of this point is vinny trochek 28
years old can play center play great wing 51 points in 81 games i've loved this guy since
like i thought carolina picked him up for nothing from florida it's crazy that they got him for
that carolina is notoriously stingy with re-signing any player feels like it's a good fit to stay
there but whether he's there or he's not what's that deal look like because again if if strome
is seven million and vidi traccia can do anything he's very very good in a second line role there's
a surprising amount of center vacancies too yeah eight million so much musical chairs that's going
to happen is nine million is he is he eight million so that's a lot of money here's a lot
of fucking money jesse i'm being sarcastic here's the other thing i want to prep everyone for like
this this free agency period is giving me major 2016 vibes you mean like what is that and that's
considered the worst free agency class of all time it well it's a pretty fucking bad one that's
the oc poso and the mad and dude it was everyone everybody almost all the uh i think felt harry
almost all the big signings.
You want me to run it off?
Go through.
Is this all July 1st?
The 2016 free agents.
So we got Stephen Stamkos.
Yep.
Signed for eight years, $68 million.
Good deal.
8.5.
Yeah, that's a great deal.
Kyle Akpozo, seven years, $42 million, six average.
Oof.
Louis Erickson, signed with the Canucks, six years, 36.
That's six.
Oof.
milan lucic signed with the oilers seven years 42 six per oof david bacchus signed with the
bruins five years 30 that's six per oof andrew ladd signed with the islanders seven years 38.5
that's 5.5 per oof uh i'll skip some eric stall signed with the wild for 10.5 that's 3.5 million
dollars that one wasn't bad no you skipped you skipped some really bad ones man you want the
friends nielsen dude red wings nielsen the mikhail bodker signed with the sharks
yeah uh yeah and then you got james reimer the worst contract signed with the panthers 3.4
million that was garbage garbage uh why is it giving oh by the way nick letty is uh also
preaching i like nick letty um why why is this giving you those kinds of vibes because there
are some unbelievable talents available there are so in in that regard i don't think it's quite
like 2016 because some of the players who are going to get big money have hockey left in them
like ryan strome's not done you know i just i don't know if i'd give him all that money but
he's a good hockey player and should be for a number of years same with cadre same with malkin
same with latang same with drew uh i i think he's one of those guys who could quit whenever he wants
like yeah he could retire whenever he wants or he could play forever and just be one of those guys
who keeps you know i'm coming back until i get my damn cup he could he could joe thornton this
you know maybe he learned a thing or two uh when he went to florida um they all have hockey left
in them but depending on the term and i think a lot of them are really bad there are gonna be a
lot of players the older guys are gonna be looking for term the younger guys like new to free agency
are probably going to be looking for three-year deals because remember 2025 that's when the cap
is going to go up and it's going to go up big we right now listen don't quote me on this a lot
could change in 36 months i always love that by the way someone sends you something that you said
in 2018 and i'm like that's like a fucking lifetime ago are you kidding me but um yeah but
but uh uh uh the the the rumor is it's somewhere between five and ten million dollars in one year
one jump so the younger free agents if you're a 27 28 29 year old guy you might want to have
A three year deal
If you believe you won't get injured
And that's the risk you take
The older guys are going to want term
As always
I need lots of term
Because I have a bad back
That Alan Walsh story
That Alan Walsh story
And I don't really like
I like to fish a lot
I'm playing Minnesota because I want to fish a lot
Minnesota's great
There's like no risk of making the play
Yuri
Something Seager
oh yeah seager seager yeah that was it and he signed in new york and then went to tampa and
then he was out of the end and left man ap has got some stories man sometimes you're missing a
treasure trove if you're not listening to that show uh really good um the other guy that i want
to bring up because i have to and then we can we can obviously we're gonna obsess over this list
um once the draft is over is uh phil kessel arizona coyote 34 years old i thought you were
going to say list of most annoying free agents based on best this phil castle 82 games last year
uh based on bs uh he only had eight goals though and but he had 52 points dude team stinks
yeah thanks you got 44 assists man it's no big deal i think he goes back he's an arizona coyote
i think next year yeah that's where it hurts that's where i put my money he you know what
i don't know if you can fish much in arizona but uh you know what you can do not be bothered
and that is his number one thing he doesn't want to be bothered he's he wants he doesn't want to
be bothered as he wears his two stanley cup rings and enjoys a soda without randy carlisle bothering
him yeah matt kachuk by the way is an rfa that that negotiation is going to be super interesting
in calgary because we saw how painful it was in ottawa with the other kachuk and it's not even
their top priority we need a we need to watch the rumblings around goudreau man he might be out
this oh i think he is out i think he is out new jersey wants to spend big money seattle wants to
spend big money uh and the flyers want him bad there has row is gone he's gone and and remember
2016 was also the suban for weber trade the hall for larson trade and the stamkos extension i'm
feeling it i'm feeling it don't you feel it build the more we talk about everything that's at stake
sure also draft is in two days i mean calgary the thing is though if he wants to win a cup
the best chance he has is stay there it's a good fucking team man until he signs somewhere else and
makes a pile of money yeah it's hockey man it's hockey it's ridiculous calgary could win the cup
next year they could finish last i'm always rooting for the flames a little i get it okay
all right all right uh all right so we'll let do you want a new press conference are we wrapping it
up i i'd say wrap it up to get this up as fast as possible oh yeah before it goes out of date
all right uh one more thing steve there's gonna be no traits today oh you're manifesting it i'm
not even manifesting it it's just something i know i've been hearing i've been hearing from
people that there's no traits today are there rumblings of the lack of rumbling yes cj test
cj texted jesse and said jesse i can officially tell you there'll be no trade
that's what cj said did he really cj said that yeah i can't tell if you're fucking with me
and you'll never know that's it is it in the group chat yeah cj said that there is a moratorium
it's informal before we informal before we make that a quote in the group chat julian mckenzie
We'll back you up on this.
He didn't fucking say that.
You're full of shit.
