boy i might have fell no you gotta work on that cardio a little yeah that too so you guys ran 5k
no come on cj ran ran five steps that would be shocking like why am i just hearing of this now
do i have a running buddy no no not unless you want to go really slow yeah but uh please uh
click on the link help us fundraise and that video jesse when are we expecting that this
week subscribe to the sdp on youtube channel it'll be out this week all right let's get started
the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
okay so it's the cj episode
this is a yearly tradition cj's beard has gotten beardier since we started this about 10 years ago
i can remember a cj show uh well cj show with the sdp before the cj show existed in like 2017 or
2018 and it was like cj just came on and just emptied the clip and that was the year that
got traded locker clean out 2019 that was wild that that year because like that pot that pod
went like that was one of our crazy viral shows back before you know that happened to us very
often and uh cj you really you went ham on that one that was crazy that's what i learned that you
guys have an audience yeah every single topic on that show became trending on twitter like canada
wide all of a sudden it was like uh and then i remember even my boss at the time was sort of like
so what's all this yeah yeah didn't someone reach out to you and go did these guys like give you
drugs before the show i mean look at i was young and naive here's the thing i don't remember all
that i said i don't regret any of it though i wouldn't have said anything i didn't believe or
hadn't heard what's going on but it's just i think i was a little too honest i think i remember you
said gavin mckinnon is going to go first overall in 2020 i think that you said yeah it was brilliant
you can raise that one yeah book that one uh it was i think nick caprio said to me once he's like
yeah um i can't believe how much of an audience you guys have and this is like a long time ago
and ken reed was like man i've he's like i i don't hear from anyone on on some of these book
things i do he's like but then from sdp listeners they're like right in my shit where can i buy the
book that sort of thing so we've got a great group and we're very excited to have cj here
uh for our i don't know eighth annual cj runs down what's happening right before free agency
episode and you know obviously with last night brady kachuk's going to be top of the list and
i know that you did the cj or so you did the actual cj show with julian which was fantastic
this morning but i want to run through a couple of now i've slept on it yes and i want to run
through a couple of things that led to this first before we kind of let you go off king all right
so the first thing that i want to i want to work backwards a little bit uh matthew kachuk was on
spitting chiclets a few weeks ago i guess a month and a half ago now during the first round and he
made it quite clear that despite the fact that brady had been to all his playoff games
there was no way in hell he would be seen in ottawa uh remember that clip do you guys
oh yeah i'm actually unaware of that one but he did go to carolina yeah yeah but he was like i'm
not going to ottawa you should hear it like the stank he puts on it is real i'm you don't have to
you you don't have to have seen it cj but let me i'll show you the instagram post afterwards
because i found it it's crazy then you had earlier in the season uh brady kachuk and matthew kachuk's
dad keith who we all grew up watching uh on their podcast talking calling out let's just call it
what it is lenis allmark uh he also said that um keith and matthew uh were taking jabs at at
coaching regarding brady's ice time and that he wasn't getting enough um and you know he also said
something along the lines of i'm so disappointed in your team right now that was all in the podcast
and matthew's the one trying to bring it back to center brady's not saying anything and then you
know julian had to be the one that asked him the questions at locker or not locker cleanup but the
locker the next day. And Brady was like, oh, yeah, he wasn't taking shots at anyone. And then
Julian kind of followed up because we all knew that was sort of, you know, the lie detector test
determined that was a lie. And Brady's like, listen, I've already answered that question.
And here's what it's here's what it's I'm going to I'm going to compare him to.
I'm going to compare him to two infamous senators. For me, this exit, CJ, is Alexa Yashin and Danny
heatley and it's potentially worse the reason i say that first off there's such a funny kismet
here in uh danny heatley's last season in ottawa where they made the playoffs they were swept in
four games he had one assist huh in alexi ashen's last season with the ottawa senators they played
four games were swept he had one assist and the previous year which was the year before he held
out for a year remember when he did that he had he played four games in the playoffs and had zero
points. And Brady is leaving with a stat line of four games, zero goals, zero assists, and has won
two playoff games his entire career in Ottawa. He left, and we know this from Michael Russo's
reporting. He said to the Ottawa Senators, well, there's four teams I would accept a trade to.
We now know that that's not true. And we know that's not true because Minnesota made a compelling
offer. And Brady said, nah, I'm going to Florida instead. I just want to talk before we talk about
the Florida getting this and the return the senators got. When we talk about exits from
the Ottawa senators, for me, this is up there with as bad as Yashin was and as bad as Heatley
was. Those were far more public and they were far more drawn out. But to me, he basically left
ottawa with no choice after the city gave him everything they loved him they defended him even
after the awful playoffs he had this year he had a great playoff last year against the leafs
they could not have done more for this guy and his solution or his thought is you know what i'm not
going to give you any other place other than florida to go uh trade me to i'm not staying
here long term you can i'll show up in camp or whatever but you know that you know and and and
I want to go back also to the statement the Ottawa Senators made when it had more to do with
Linus Allmark, but they said outside distractions are trying to disrupt the team. To me, and I'm a
Leaf fan, I'm not supposed to feel bad for Ottawa Senators fans, okay? I feel horrible for them this
morning. And I feel like this guy was given everything by the city, including the captaincy,
and to me, he's kicked sand in their face on the way out. That's how I feel about it.
And I look at that the statement when they were talking about outside forces are trying to disrupt.
I think the outside forces were the you know, there's the Kachuk camp inside the house.
That's what I think happened here.
Now, I'm putting you in a tough spot, CJ, because, you know, everybody, you just threw a grenade at my foot.
But what I want to ask you is, am I correct in saying that despite the fact that he was considering four separate teams, Florida was always going to be the team?
I think in his mind, Florida was the favorite.
it that to be fair like my understanding is the four teams you know carolina minnesota vegas
florida the idea was that those are places he would consider going uh let ottawa know that so
they could have the discussions that they ended up having but it wasn't as though he said i'll
wave 100 for all four of those teams i think when push came to shove here in the last few days it
was clear it was only florida so that's an important way to look at what steve steos and
the senators had to do here because effectively you're negotiating with one team you know that's
why you can say oh they got a 20 29 first and it's top 10 protected it's like well they have
no choice what was the other option the other option is we're not going to take your three
first round picks and we're just going to wait i mean the sense could have waited this out but
the danger in that a the offers would get worse not better and b all the stuff you're talking
about the forces the you know this is still a quote-unquote distractions this is still a pretty
good team and and obviously they got work to do now this summer but i'm not sure you want to risk
taking this into next season even though they you know they had contractually brady signed for two
more years and maybe they you know that if i'm in if i was stayos's shoes i'm thinking okay maybe
if we take it into next year maybe those four teams do become real and maybe the four become
six like you know you have to sort of play that game yep but then you're weighing that against
is it worth taking that risk and whatever is going to come out about this and and you know
they did manage i will say like there was the last few days there was a fair bit of chatter
behind the scenes that this was coming to a head i didn't believe it was going to happen
yesterday uh or else i probably would have not made as many father's day plans
like if i really knew it was gonna if it was gonna happen i might have committed to doing less
um but the point was it definitely started kicking up and and
i think that ottawa just had to rip off the band-aid quite honestly and and
your characterizations of things seem pretty fair i mean i know you're pretty harsh but like
it that's it's just i mean they did it all i'm doing is pointing out what they did what he did
what he allowed to happen what what you know that this is the thing like if i if it's if it comes
across as harsh the flip side is those are his actions right this is the only thing i take some
like thought with we know teams would trade a player in two seconds a second they find that
player 100 not worth their time yep so like loyalty is a it's got to be a two-way street
but it's not really like in pro sports loyalty is kind of i mean everyone's okay cindy crosby
is low to the pittsburgh penguins like let's we don't need to debate that but like in general
there isn't a ton of loyalty and oh alan walsh would be in here hitting me over the head with
the pan like he's like player rights player rights they can do what they want you know and that and
and so my only thought is brady played not a long time he would have played those next two years he
was going to earn the right to free agency and he was going to go to florida so when he said on
april 29th oh i want to win here and these are all distractions was there had there been
conversations before that i don't think so not with the team okay because remember he left the
team right after the for the birth of his child right after the the fourth game of that series so
he wasn't there when they had their actual media breakdown he came back to the city and i think
that's when he made that comment i think everything has happened since that point okay that makes a
lot more sense in terms of the discussions with management and look he put the sentence in a tough
spot but i think he basically just said i'm not resigning here in 2028 sort of ottawa you do with
that what you will do i mean you know the vancouver canucks knew that last summer about quinn hughes
they elected to bring him into this season obviously didn't go very well they trade him
by december but it was the same kind of he wasn't he wasn't demanding a trade today but he's also
saying you've got two years of me under contract which i'll happily play here but beyond that
nothing so it look at it's it's a tough business man oh of course of course the conspiracy theories
are out with the with the team usa group chat and they're fun but the more i look at it the more i'm
like is this just perfect timing with with the cap going up like a couple years ago it seemed
impossible the panthers would even be able to keep their team together despite all odds they did and
now they're adding to it is this just a player taking advantage of the fact that the cap is going
up and he's going to a really good team yeah and his brother plays there and it's a great place to
live and do business and all that look i'm with you on this but although let's go let's rewind
like this is this will sound really like a non sequitur to start sure but the guys that played
in this olympics for the most part except for the the really older players they were begging for
years to get a chance to do this right so like that generation was denied a chance to play in
these big games outside of the stanley cup playoffs a lot of the players were talking
about connected to trades now their teams were not in the playoffs for most of those years
i think if anything like it wasn't like some big top secret meeting in a dorm in milan
i think it was like more hey it's fun to win would you like to a lot of these guys are
approaching mid-career a couple of them are even beyond that point like hellebucks 33 yep you know
and they finally play in these awesome games and you're around the vibe and you know it's fun
playing with guys you like like i think if anything it's just lit a fire under some of
them to be like i can't sit patient anymore and just assume this is going to happen for me in
the nhl that to me is way more plausible than like hatched in that you know i guess the kachuks and
the hughes brothers like they apparently those were like you know party central where everyone
gathered not necessarily to party but to chat at night you know i'm sure there was some talk about
this stuff like look at i probably sat with you guys at some point along the line and been like
hey i wouldn't mind working here like you can play that game but i don't think this was some master
plan as much as these guys got a taste of the highest level of hockey and like man that was
fun i want to do it again yeah you mentioned hellebuck i was talking to someone uh yesterday
about hellebuck going to the panthers because there's been some whispers about that and he
he kind of told me i was barking up the wrong tree and they want to forward which shocked me
and then three hours later brady kachuk got traded to the panthers the panthers also don't have a
goalie um cooper black led the charlotte checkers in games played for goalies that's that's basically
their starter right now is hellebuck or bob off the table i don't think bob's off the table even
it runs contrary to a lot of my own reporting because obviously he's been asking for a
significant contract that it does appear he's going to july 1st but i always had in the back
of my mind like if you're sergey brodsky does it really make sense to leave i don't think it does
i don't think you're you you re-sign there regardless of what the money is for you're
the number one contender for the cup he wanted a six-year deal though yeah and 42 mil he wanted
brad marchand so yeah so i mean that's a long like i don't know how you bridge the divide between
what the panthers think that should be and that because obviously i don't think many 38 year old
goalies will probably never see a 38 year old goalie in nhl history get a six-year deal honestly
and and then at that kind of value and it's a plus 37 contract too so it's oh it it's a full
buyout like it's crazy no it's on your cap even it's on your cap no matter what even if he's
retired if he blows out his knee if whatever he he's still a full cap penalty so it's just it's
it's an immense amount of risk i mean look marshan's a risk too uh and they had to sign
that contract well they didn't have to but they to get under the cap what steve's mentioning that
was the only way to kind of satisfy what marshan needed to be paid and how they could make it work
um you know i i just think if you're bobrowski are you really leaving
and that's why until we get a little closer to july 1st and someone tells me 100 that's not
happening i have to believe that's still an option i don't know that hellebuck's fully off the table
though that was great the interesting thing about hellebuck is it sounds like there's a lot of
different teams he would consider going to so are any of them canadian i don't i don't know i i don't
know but i would say i don't think this one is as pre-ordained maybe as brady kachuk to florida was
okay whereas like brady clearly was steering himself in that direction um you know conor
hellebuck has a no movement clause but i think he's willing to consider all kinds of different
options and you know which makes it seem a little bit more like he's interested in life
out somewhere other than winnipeg right uh i think brady was more than fine in all seriousness to
stay in ottawa another year sure you know i i do i actually do believe that and this will sound
weird given the way we've started the show i think he actually liked it there i think he is buddies
with a lot of guys on the team i just think he it was only it had a shelf life for him and and
that's by the way his right i just feel i just it's no different than his dad his dad was in
winnipeg yeah and then had a long career down the states married a woman i believe his wife chantelle
is from winnipeg oh there you go uh so his mom is canadian matthew kachuk started in calgary
played there a long time until he didn't want to play there anymore like and i don't necessarily
everything's so sort of political right now and everyone's painting this like just canada us i
don't think it's honestly that simple i think it's like brady's moving to florida to play with his
brother and if you take the other side of this argument and it's look at i know sense fans don't
want to hear this cover this my nephew henry uh who's a sense fan but um you know this other side
of the story is kind of cool this is a very close family these guys are best friends and they're
going to get to play together and and the way it happened probably feels not great but the other
side of the story is pretty cool if you're the player anyway back to hellbuck i think you'd
consider a whole bunch of different places and and so florida is probably a long shot now because
i don't know what assets they have left to make that deal but andis valmanis that's about it but
also this is a pretty good front office yeah they'll figure it out you know like you can do
a three-way you look at these last few cups and for different reasons they get painted different
ways but like carolina aggressive front office made lots of trades made one that didn't work
turned it into something good you know like vegas keeps dealing dealing dealing florida keeps
dealing dealing like if i'm a fan of an nhl team which i'm not i want my front offices doing what
these guys are all doing it's exciting i want yes and and it's like the old jim rutherford model
like sometimes you trade yourself into a problem you can trade yourself out of it like not every
trade has to be a 100 win uh i feel like there's just way too much and it might be changing this
is why i'm getting excited talking myself into it a little bit here but like i feel like it's
changing right now like we're just seeing a little bit more aggressiveness around the league
everyone knows the free agency doesn't have very many solutions if you have big problems
and so i i want teams that deal this way and that's why i'm going to say florida i would never
say we'll never trade for hellebuck it's just it got a little harder with with trading three first
round picks for a good job the the risk for yes oh yeah sorry jesse no no i was i was gonna say
the the risk for florida is obvious i mean they're going for the cup right now but they basically
have no futures um the risk for ottawa is really time sensitive here right so they're trying to
flip this stuff it sounds like um that they got for stuff that can help their team win now what's
in play because i know they can't trade pick 32 yeah and that's significant right like they add
so they added ammunition they could trade by getting 9 and 25 in this deal um yeah pick number
nine went right to number four on the trade board oh number four okay just because i i think they
really have to trade it did that come out today um i think it it might be published since we've
been recording but oh wow so it's fresh okay it's fresh but the point is is that i really think
they're going to work hard to to use that as the main piece to get something back that's a player
that can help the team next year um you know what's in play look i think they consider two
forwards i think they consider a forward and a d like i i they're not being too rigid about
like they know they're not going out and getting brady kachuk right right yeah you're not necessarily
getting the archetype let alone someone who can put up the kind of stats he did individually
i think they're now using that that ammunition to be like who are the best players we can get
in the door that can help us be better and and you know it might not be the same you know point
is you might get might end up like more of a scoring type of winger that comes in versus you
know someone who does the other things that brady kachuk does well um in the game so that's that's
sort of where they're at you're right though it's it's a lot of pressure because here's the thing
we know this every other gm knows this i think it's a little harder you know it's going to be
tough for ottawa to complete other trades because i think if i'm another gm and steve
stayhouse is calling and he's offering that nine pick you're like well something more or something
like right do you know i mean like you're you're you know that he needs to get that deal done 100
you know that he'd prefer not to pick at number nine i'm sure they will if they have to that
prospect will be a decent prospect too that could also be traded somewhere but people like picks
more like for there's nothing more valuable than a pick right now a boat's a boat but the mystery
box could be anything it could even be a boat yes yes but like right now your days like if you're a
team that gets the number nine pick you're adding a new shiny prospect this week like you're not
acquiring the 2028 first rounder like you are you get the satisfaction this week and and you know
let's face it even things like hosting a draft like maybe i'm not saying buffalo is going to
trade the may but like there's all these other factors that go in that sometimes teams want a
first round pick they've traded one in the past so um now we see what they can do but you're right
it's not there's not a lot of time in the sense for an office to be emotional about this they
have to get down to business and i'm reminded way back when i mean since you did a little
sense history but they acquired bobby ryan i think the day after the daniel alfredson left
in free agency oh yeah wow but it was you know it was a big trade and con or is it just a straight
contract anyway he definitely was acquired right at the same time it was almost like don't look at
this this thing we botched over here and i'm not suggesting at all that we got a brand new toy
but yeah i mean i think they do have to act quickly yeah geez that was a big trade okay
did the um the reaction to brady kachuk and team usa did that expedite his willingness to have the
conversation with steve stales because i know your colleague in the athletic uh pierre lebrun wrote
that specifically he was perturbed about when he returned from that and he touched the puck in
edmonton and calgary he was booed every single time he touched the puck did that reaction everything
that he faced coming out of that make him more unlikely to resign in two years in ottawa it
didn't help look i think this was going to happen anyway like the funny thing about this trade is as
i mentioned already i was taken by surprise when it officially came down but is anyone really that
surprised like no i feel like we've had two years of talking about you know this guy's going to move
on he's going to want to play in the u.s he's likely going to want to play with his brother
um you know all those things might have sped sped it up a little bit but i i still think it was
ending up here even if he was wildly celebrated uh in fact even if the senators won a stanley cup
he probably ends up here because you know he probably feels as though he's delivered on his
mission i mean look at we're we're playing in hypotheticals a little bit so there's a bit of
guesswork there but i just believe he this was always where it was going much like with matthew
gave the flames the the number of years effectively he had to under the cba and then he wanted to go
play somewhere he wanted to play so i i believe that look at brady's biggest influences obviously
are his dad his brother this is a very close family and you know i i don't think i don't
think that pushed it over the edge but also it might have look at it might have left him feeling
a certain way emotionally on the way out well i mean i mean a star player gets booed if that if
you're getting booed as a star player in another market in an opposing ring you should sort of
expect that if that perturbed you i don't know how you're going to handle the panthers who don't
don't do deal in softness maybe but maybe not the booze as much as like even the some of the
pointed questions about going to the white house and and yeah well i mean listen he's gonna have to
he's gonna have to know that you know the country whose sovereignty he's not gonna get those
questions in florida no he's not yeah he's not gonna get any questions he doesn't have to know
that yeah well i guess live his life in ignorant bliss yeah so i and again i don't want to say
like that is like i'm not even going at the questioners i'm just saying it's a fact he's
going to now play in a market where if they win a gold medal in four years time and they go to
the white house no one's going to ask exactly yeah his media availability coming back from
the olympics the first time he got to talk to the media was about like 17 minutes it was nearly 20
minutes of questions just about the olympics and everything that's not something he has to deal
with him anymore yeah that's fair now i was looking at his phone and i'm trying not to look
down uh connor murphy by the way has re-signed we'll get to that in a second so if you're getting
messages on that yeah that's probably what it is now uh let's talk about um ottawa for a second cj
and then i want to talk about florida because this is a massive win for the florida panthers
the ottawa senators get a top 10 overall pick so number nine and i can remember a similar trade
Remember, Bo Horvat was dealt to...
I think that was pick nine.
Yeah, the Bo Horvat pick was dealt to Vancouver
for Corey Schneider, you know, 10, 12 years ago.
You know, the Sens could end up with a great player here.
Is there any reason to keep it?
You know, like, because to me, I'm like,
well, okay, I get that, you know,
you do take a step back in a very, very competitive
Atlantic division where nobody wants to lose, right?
But you've got a pretty good team.
if lenis has a bounce back full season plays a little bit more like he did in the playoffs he
was phenomenal in the playoffs um i don't see why the sends can't be challenging for a postseason
anyway how likely is it that you think that they keep one of or both of these picks well the reason
to not trade it would be if the offers just suck right like like yeah which could be possible no
but there could be danger in committing yourself that we have to trade this we have to get someone
help now and then you make a bad trade like that would be and and it's really easy for us to sit
here and try to gauge what that is you know i i think the sense felt like they needed a winger
before this do you know what i mean so now they're they're down two uh in in and and like the ufa
class does not offer a whole lot of solutions like honestly someone like bobby mcmahon probably
made sense in ottawa you know he resigned on sunday staying in seattle yep you know it's just
that kind of year on on the free agent boards i mean there's a couple interesting defensemen out
there i'd say i mean if bobovsky gets to free agency he's sort of an interesting goaltender
but there's there's not a whole lot i mean even jason dickinson coming off the board and signing
edmonton sunday that's notable because there just are so few centers don't let me get lost
in my thoughts but i'm just i'm just saying that if you're ottawa you really got to make a trade
yeah okay and but i don't think it has to be the number nine overall pick like
maybe there's a hockey trade to be made too for them yep um you know you probably don't want
ridley greg as your top left winger as they've got him listed there i think fabian zetterlin's
probably on his way out um down three um and then and then you got to find somebody to push
greg and fogel down but if you look at that lineup like there are a lot of worse teams and
good good lineup really good they're set up reasonably well down the middle um you know
which is an area that a lot of teams right now are thinking like,
how the hell do we get better centers?
Kaliev was one of the best players in the AHL this year.
And so I do think that there is a world where they're picking with number
nine, but as we sit here on Monday morning,
that's not where their focus is.
So one of the questions I saw, sorry, Adam,
was why didn't they just inquire about Mackie Samuskavich?
Obviously didn't like him enough.
I mean, the thing with him too, is he's an RFA.
so you're getting his rights and what's that going to cost and maybe he doesn't sign well i'm not
saying he doesn't sign but who knows there might be challenges there he's an american guy um you
know this has been something look this is a thing canadian teams are facing is a lot of canadian
teams are on no trade lists um and some are facing the challenge of signing players that are american
i don't mean to paint mackie samiskiewicz necessarily with that brush but like that you
have to it's it's not the easiest time right now i mean i'm not making excuses for the senators but
the truth is the truth right there's only so many players that are available and some of them have
trade protection and virtually all of them would have ottawa on that on those kind of lists so
that's something that descends i know we're navigating even at the trade deadline was a
challenge for them can you give us a type of player or that's on your trade board that they
could get with the number nine pick matthew nice i can't believe you just said that cj that's crazy
that's so nice do you want that to happen no hell no sorry like go ahead i mean they almost traded
him to freaking montreal i mean it's like we are getting the leafs don't blow don't don't open the
that isn't dead yet either though don't blow that on the candidate that's my fault i'm sorry why
we're not talking about it yet because we don't want to go there and he just said something we
need to save that for the segment but you just said it's not dead yet okay the montreal thing
yeah so if you would trade him to montreal you'd trade him to ottawa too yeah i think you have to
operate that way i realize you know if you guys are putting your fan hats on that might make it
a little just even more conflicting i'll live just win it it's stitched to my head it would
probably be easier if he was like trade to anaheim and you only saw him a couple times a year and
you know his successes were distant successes for the most part um no success of a former
leaf is a distant success cj we saw that with vegas uh every every and we saw it with carolina
to uh you know uh formerly freddie anderson although that was several years ago it was half
a decade ago people act like seth jarvis played for the least for five years i know it's crazy
it was just a draft pick the least might not even have picked them i think they would have picked
oh shit son of a gun are you i could have got my whole life without knowing that cj i know they
really liked him are you able to tell us any names that ottawa might be looking at
to swap for the number nine so i go to my trade board and i see someone like mason mctavish
now his dad works in ottawa i think that there could be some you know that that could make some
sense uh i wonder about jordan kairu now kairu is a player with a no trade clause um i'm not sure
that which way he would go on that if he would waive or not but like i think that's the type of
player that is available right now in the trade market that the sends have to be all over i know
there's been a lot of talk about jason robertson i i'm very skeptical that robertson would sign
long-term in ottawa and so do you really want to give up a bunch of assets to bring cat again
yeah kind of like to bring cat 2.0 and and only have him for one season i'm not saying it couldn't
happen but so they could trade for him but there's just no guarantee he stays beyond one season right
because he's one year from ufa so basically this year they would either do a one-year deal or go
to arbitration and get a one-year deal and then and then he'd be a ufa and you know i just don't
think he's would commit to ottawa long term so i'm not sure that one makes it makes sense in that
yeah you'd love to drop him in that you're right you're putting robertson up top and like your
your team looks a lot better but i i don't think in reality that's that's all that feasible you
know i wonder about jj peterka um interesting noted you know who obviously was on the move
last year a close uh friend of your shows yes right that's right he was on the show he was on
uh agent revocateur and two weeks ago and tim stutzler yeah but you know german national guy
german connection there and just the sense it didn't necessarily go great or it i don't know
how it was bad but it wasn't maybe the ideal fit and the thing about peterka is he doesn't have
that no trade protection he is signed for a few more years so you know that that could make sense
for for ottawa jesse um and maybe there's something out there we're not seeing or that
i'm not hearing about i mean i think that's that's always possible too i wonder too if you know a guy
like so um uh people looking for like puck moving defense but jordan spence's name's been out there
too right for ottawa and he's an rfa younger defenseman obviously an la pick can move a puck
i don't know what he tops out as at this point but can at least be a puck moving defenseman even
even if he is smallish and and that sort of thing do they package those two things one of those guys
that lands in that timothy lilligren yeah or like you know just smaller and and different people see
different things you know i watched the hurricanes pretty closely here a few weeks ago they didn't
have a bunch of giants back there no they didn't um you know so but and that worked and that won
but then other teams obviously have won with big physical imposing defense groups i mean florida's
was was more of that style i'd say so um you know suspense is one of those guys i think it's going
to land in that debate sort of like emil andre that the leafs is traded for just smaller you
know what kind of impact can they have so maybe maybe that's that look they auto i think wants
of defensemen too like they they went down the road with Rasmus Ristelainen at the deadline I
wonder if there's something that gets returned there um but there's a sense that Ottawa definitely
needs another defenseman in addition to now we're all focusing on their forward group after losing
Brady Kachuk they have a lot of ammunition though I gotta say like having they've just added three
first rounders and a second like those are all I mean I'm not saying all those assets will or need
to be traded this week but you know even as we go through future years here as we get up to the
deadline you know they got the 2029 first for uh from florida but they have the 2027 second like
those will be things they can trade at future deadlines too i think that's an important thing
to focus on they don't have to solve this problem today right right and and it's it's dangerous if
you think you you need to right they need to make steps to get better players and then be open to
doing deals in the seasons to come because i don't think they're going anywhere with with stutzla
signed cousin signed no there's gonna be a factor they're gonna be a fact it pains me they're a good
team yeah a lot of it hinges too on the goaltending and obviously it was up and down last year so
you're right adam like if if omark just has a steadier regular season they're probably that's
probably a four or five point increase just from like a little better performance from a guy who's
paid to to be a top performer so i'm gonna pause this there because we got to do the bed mg and
big story and i have a big question in it sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have
time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out
because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that
they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and
their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well
hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper
thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying
that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you
with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window

we've talked about the senator's angle on this one we talked about the chuck angle on this one
we need to talk we need to have a serious talk about uh the super team era that's forming around
us it's pretty clear like this feels like 2016 nba vibes to me and the florida panthers look like
on paper that they're just going to be murderers next year like it's going to be i i can't wait
for that first tampa florida game that's going to be crazy you have new cap reality and old cap
contracts yeah that's exactly what happened here it's the best and and so I the one thing you got
a question with Florida is okay they've got all the rest of this stuff done they got to get a
goalie you mentioned Bobrovsky earlier probably two goalies but like is it are they a lock like
is there any reality CJ that you can see and I'm putting this question out to Steve and Jesse as
well where they don't who cares if they win the division where they don't go on a run in the
playoffs i guess health is always a question mark right like they they're a bit older they're they
are older there's a lot of guys with a three at the start of their age uh i did notice by the way
the team uh reporter jameson hall who does a good job but he said i don't know everyone's calling
this team old they only have two guys over 30 but he didn't mention that they have seven guys
exactly age 30 oh they're not that old so they have nine players aged 30 and older man um you
know which i'm not looking i'm not saying in and of itself is a problem but you know last year
obviously the injuries caught up to them that could happen again um you know but look i i'm
not here to poke holes in that team i mean i think that that's what is on screen right now
should be like a community guideline violation and by the way they're losing aj greer too
uh he's gone yeah but they but they do a good job of finding aj greer before he's aj greer
exactly like they signed him and no one even paid any attention and then he had two good years and
now he's and good for him he had a really good season last year but he's gonna make more money
somewhere else um that's what they've done that's what they did with oel that's what they did with
even nate schmidt like they found these guys before they were getting paid properly and
they helped them get there like i think that's the argument for any team is like
i mean i don't want to make this about the leaps and it's great oh don't worry later on we but it's
great that you get darren radish and i have no problem with that move i really don't but
ideally you're signing darren radish or finding him before he's getting paid eight and a half
million right right and so i think florida does a good job of that so that's why i'm not as worried
about even the fact their goaltending doesn't have any doesn't have anything on that that sheet
and i think people forget too they didn't have their first line center for the entirety of last
season yeah barkov didn't play last and then the guy came off of like a year off and won a gold
medal at the world championship yeah so like oh he's gonna be phenomenal they're just adding bark
off to last year's team and brady kachuk and brady kachuk sorry and that too this this is what's on
screen right now verhege barkov reinhardt kachuk lundell kachuk it's probably bennett where lundell
is and then it's lusterine and lundell marshand gajevich boquist rodriguez now i think evan
rodriguez gets moved that's a guy that if they're going to go after a goalie that you have to trade
for he has no trade protection yeah if you're winnipeg for instance and conor hellebuck's
available like it starts with evan rodriguez because you need a centerman and maybe he doesn't
stay maybe you flip him to somebody else but i do think you got to have that plus plus plus right
adam are you a big uh garrison yuck guy because i think he could be the next vesna winner i'm a
big dominant sabrango guy yeah yeah yeah that's my god they're uh that's the most crazily elite
team i've ever seen in the cap here they just don't have a goal i have to throw the flag here
on puckpedia though are we really believing that dimitri kulikov is not giving brady kachuk number
seven they have oh i didn't even think of that i don't know what it's gonna cost but i have a hard
time imagining that give the man a rolex and mikula is 77 so you can't just do that that's a
good point cj it's a really good i mean it's a dumb but i'm like why is they have brady kachuk
as number eight this is why we have you on it's for details like that but i and even though
kulikov's a veteran i would be stunned if brady kachuk doesn't find a way into the number seven
just it's a rolex away it's a rolex away like panarin did right with the uh with the mascot
um six seven i uh i just think that this is going to be a murderer's row this team it's just going
to be ugly ugly ugly it might not work though well that's always true right it can always be
yeah that's why i don't have florida winning the division because i always think there's
growing pains when you introduce a new top four to a team also can we just say that they don't
fucking care like right yeah i don't think the regular season matters to this team at all and
And I think there's such vets that they realize that.
It's about being at your best going for the playoffs.
Right.
And what's a Bennett-Kachuk line going to look like?
Right.
Prison, I think.
Jill?
Who was their most common center at the Olympics?
The Kachuks?
Yeah.
It was Matthews at the Four Nation.
I don't know about the Olympics, though.
I don't know.
I'm trying to remember what that line was.
It's a bit of a black hole in my life.
I try to block it out.
We had a baby during the Olympics.
that's what i'm saying i just that's not what i'm saying i'm saying i hated it whenever the
schedule comes out like i swear to you i want to use some sdpn budget and go see the tampa versus
florida game whatever the first one is i want to see that in person that ideally you're going to
the preseason one because there's even less there's even less at stake there yeah less f's to
give and like more likelihood of like putting you know but you were saying preseason is going to be
like really shortened this year and no one's gonna four games max per hell yeah which is amazing i
love that it's gonna be like five tampa suspensions and five florida fines and it's gonna be crazy
john cooper's gonna get another hundred thousand dollar suspension paul maurice is gonna get
nothing it'll be great um the the thing for florida i mean bill zito and you notice nick
delorier signed a two-year deal in carolina i did yes does that not feel a little bit like florida
like insurance oh yeah oh my god he doesn't fit what they do all the at all but and i'm not saying
this in a bad way but he played one game in the playoffs three three minutes time on ice i think
seven or eight games in a regular season and they're signing him on the stage at the stanley
cup party which is great great personality but i also think they know what what's coming for them
in the eastern conference my favorite thing is uh during the cup celebration everyone's thrown
their equipment off and everything and even the guys who didn't play are in full equipment he had
was wrist tape i love that everyone's gotta notice that how did i because i was just like
what a beauty i absolutely love nick delorier and he's he's been partying like he played
20 minutes a night uh and he absolutely should i love it i know by the way that the fact that they
got that trade done like internally they felt like that was like crossing the rubicon a little bit
just because obviously which trade specifically getting delorier really which i realized i think
was a fifth round pick i would say it was you know it's one of those trades that happens on
deadline day and i was like all right next next but but just because the way they've been run
they obviously very you know analytically focused and inspired and that was not an analytical trade
no and that i think it married the two schools of thought within that organization because look at
rod brindamore is not i'm not saying he doesn't like analytics but look at the way rod brindamore
played hockey and there was obviously people on their staff that aren't you know they didn't all
get a master's in chemistry like eric so like the point is is like they they have varying opinions
at the table as i think every team does yep but the fact that they made that trade i think
internally they thought that was like wow okay we could each see each other's viewpoint kind of move
like yeah and the fact that was their only move yeah like they didn't do anything else on trade
deadline 12 mil and cap space so absurd yeah it's offensive and we dared to criticize them for not
moving on from the two firsts and two thirds they got from dallas it's crazy yeah well old
takes exposed a hundred percent well man that would be we could power that account with all
our takes um we could give them all the content so from the florida side of this obviously
goaltending still something to look out for but i think what's really interesting you know in in
years past everybody signed there too yeah oh yeah everybody and for a while so so what's
interesting though is you know in in previous years like i remember the the 2011 bruins they
had an enormous effect on the rest of the nhl because of the way they played and vancouver
tried to become them and win the cup and they couldn't right because they wrote their first
everyone but then everybody did what i think is interesting now is you're seeing vegas who i think
started this cutthroat right bill zito's cutthroat but still loyal you know but he said to aaron
eckblad sorry you're not going to make anywhere close to what you want to make if you want to be
here and win a cup great but otherwise you're making six million and you're staying um i think
there's going to be front offices that really try to mirror those guys because it's been especially
through covid and the flat cap part you know where the cup where the cap was going up like a million
dollars a year i think a lot of these gmcj got a little complacent got a little too conservative
of oh well if i make a move it might be a mistake now with teams like florida and vegas being as
aggressive as they are the leafs were pretty aggressive have been pretty aggressive under
sheikah too we'll see if that continues seattle in a way there seems to be uh a hey guys um you're
not going to sit around and be a boring old dusty guy anymore you better pick up the phone and start
calling people uh do you get that sense around the league or do you think the majority will still be
dusty and slow no i everything's changing at a pretty fast pace now yeah you know the so this
is real that the the scuttlebutt we hear is real well there's just going to be big changes like i
think you're going to see more players sign short contracts now because they can still make a bag
on a short contract and then leave open the flexibility so i think we should get used to
a reality where like three and four year deals are normal for stars and obviously they're going
to be getting 15 16 17 million but it's not all just going to be i know they're scaling it back
you can still do an eight-year deal right now but even when it becomes seven i don't think it's all
going to be long long long term uh and so if that happens a players are going to have they're going
to change teams more probably that would be like a downstream effect of that the other part of it
is though if you're a team that's bad i think there's maybe a path to getting better quicker
because you're not looking around at the entire league and you're like every good player in this
league is signed for the next seven years yeah um so it could make free agency more interesting
long-term contracts all of a sudden are very valuable whereas before it was like oh that
might be an anchor yeah because it's valuable if you sign the ones carolina signed yeah like
logan stankovin and jackson blake right now starting eight-year deals at way below their
market right now like those there's no way those aren't positive value contracts um for a long
long long time but you know i don't know how many players are going to sign those i i just think the
stars are going to want they're kind of going to want to do what austin matthews has already been
doing right keep it short but he did a five-year deal in a second contract he did a four-year deal
in his third i think that'll be more common for star players moving forward because the key is
on the five-year deal on your second deal like if conor bedard does a five-year deal he's going to
get like 75 million still yeah so it's you can take that risk i think in the old days players
didn't want to take the risk because obviously any hockey player could their career could end
pretty quickly yep for reasons they don't even control yep because of the injuries and the
dangerous nature of the sport but now i so i think things are going to go shorter and yeah gms they
have no the other part is too i don't even know if you guys talk about this not everyone's going
to spend at the cap anymore and that's and there's going to be some surprising teams that don't right
i think so and especially okay maybe this year at 104 million it's not as prevalent next year it's
113.5 million and the following year it's over 120 and those are u.s dollars yep and canadian
clubs largely earn most of the revenue in canadian dollars like i i just think within a year or two
here most teams aren't going to spend to the cap there'll be five or six or seven or eight to do
but then there's going to be 24 that don't and that's where if you make a mistake you can trade
those contracts some of those teams because those teams are less concerned about the cap hit because
they're not spending the cap anyway, especially if it's, you know, the situation which a lot of
the front-loaded deals have where you don't owe as much money as the cap hit. Two in five Canadians

so let's talk about you you mentioned austin matthews let's just start there because i want
to talk leaves with you now you reported and have taken shit for this all i haven't noticed spring
long that austin was really unhappy with how the season ended uh really unhappy with the leafs
direction funnily enough so were all of us and wasn't convinced he was coming back next year
and then it was immediately backed up by your former colleague Elliot Friedman who now the two
of you have just shared in the in in just Leafs Nation's ire for even daring to say the thing that
Austin is truly thinking with the moves they've made the the you know the Emil Andre trade I guess
we should just call it the Joseph Wohl trade it's not really the Emil Andre trade um the Darren
radish signing you wait till like game six next year he's gonna do something and it will be you
will be all on board listen i'm cool with it i just want to say like six minutes like game one
how dare you know pierre lebrun has said you know the winds are going in the favor of austin wanting
to come back has he yet confirmed to the leafs yes i want to be there in september i don't believe
he has but but the winds are blowing in the right direction great and look you can go back and read
it i think i wrote that story may second or third really all i reported is he hadn't decided if he
wanted to be back which was 1000 the truth then and there's no backtracking there's nothing like
i think sometimes like what i reported got twisted i wasn't saying he demanded out either
but it was pretty notable that at that point in time they didn't really have a front office in
place or they were just getting it in place they didn't know who the coach was going to be they
hadn't won the draft lottery we didn't know what moves they were going to make like i think he was
looking at this and going wait a minute i'm not sure and some of that certainty or that
i think has you know the emotions of this have passed they've put the front office in place
obviously they replaced uh craig brube with jim hiller uh who has a history with austin matthews
not saying matthews was behind the hiring but you know it is at least someone he knows and that is
someone he knows that's real like other than other than they worked together how they can maintain a
relationship like i don't i don't think that they've maintained necessarily a relationship but
it's probably easier to work with someone that you know how you work with them yeah do you know
what i'm saying like it's like they work together for four years like it's not nothing now john
doesn't have to tell us the truth ever does does he and i'm not saying he's lying here but did they
talk to any leafs before making this hire from your thought process i don't know if they did
okay honest i mean i don't get the sense that matthews was very involved in this this coach
firing like it's it stands in opposition to what's happened in edmonton right in edmonton multiple
candidates that we know of like met with the leadership core of the players of the team yeah
this is not the way the leafs conducted their their search and and to be fair the edmonton is
way more the outlier like players very rarely have a say in it like over the years for example
sydney crosby's always been like i don't want to say in anything basically like when it comes to
like he's even though he had the pull in the power for a long time to get certain people hired or
go trade for this guy like he didn't want to use that he felt like i'm a player i play you're a
manager you manage hire a coach you will coach um you know if anything the lines have gotten
blurred born edmonton that that's a little different with the babcock you know search
which connor is on board with 100 okay i mean this i don't think this is happening if connor
and leon and zach hyman and some of the trusted veterans on that team didn't want it to happen
um but they're in a different circumstance they are certainly fair certainly they've been to two
cup finals they've been to what multiple western conference like they've seen success man and
they've all kind of made like a pact like we're here and we're in this and we're getting it done
and so they have they've bought shares in the company okay you know what i mean it's not they're
not just getting paid by the company they're not just employees like there's a little bit more
ownership there i think than what you have and again in most other markets this is not a shot
at toronto this is not to say austin isn't as committed to the leafs i think what austin's
first of all he has been very committed to the leafs he's been here a long time people were
speculating he was going to leave way way back he never did yeah berkey um he started all that
right but i'm just saying and he's wanted to win a stanley cup here and i think he got to the end
of this season and he was like wow we might not win a stanley cup here i think it was like the
first time it dawned on him even through all their previous playoff failures i think he always had a
really strong belief in the direction everyone was going and that they were going to figure it out
and this was the first off season where he wasn't sure and it does seem like everything is in a much
much better place today than it was you know six or seven weeks ago when i put out that report
initially and you know i think he still wants to see how they put the the topping on the sunday
still because there's still some moves to be made around the leafs but you know i get the sense he's
he's happy he's focused on being a leaf and and i don't think we're talking about him being traded
this summer at any point in the future jesse can you explain what you mean when you say austin is
going to decide whether he wants to return in september because i think a lot of people hear
that and they're confused because they say he's under contract what do you mean he's deciding
whether he wants to play or not for the Leafs well I think it's similar to Kachuk in that he
has the ability to tell management you know I will honor my contract of course but I'm not going to
be here beyond that and so that becomes its own okay this is dangerous because I don't want to
get radioed the wrong way because this has not happened but had he done that then you're if
you're the Leafs management you're left with the decision do we keep him for these two years or one
of these years what is the best like since we now know he's not coming back you know what is the
best way to navigate this yeah now fortunately for the leafs they're not going to face that choice
but if he came to that conclusion this summer i think they would have rightly probably concluded
the best thing to do is trade them two years out from being a ufa because here's the danger if you
wait a year and this is with any player in austin's situation but a top player if you trade them one
year out from when they can become ufas the team you're trading them to needs to know he's signing
an extension so that adds yet one more freaking wrinkle into this thing you got to work with the
approved teams you got to make sure it all goes blah blah blah blah it's way easier and cleaner
to trade someone two years out because those teams can't sign them right yeah and and so it's almost
like not your problem and those teams know they're but anyway that that's i think jesse what what i
meant by that is that he just wasn't sure if he was still on board with the program um but i i
think he's a lot more on board now but a lot of things have happened right a lot of good things
right it's there's there's there's positive momentum in toronto there's no way around it i
mean this front office has got to know him a little bit they've you know they've had conversations
they win the first overall pick you know i think i don't know if he's grading every trade but like
i just think you know john chica said i have to address this blue line he started to address the
blue line like this is the thing players don't want promises like adam you're asking about like
the old stodgy gms that don't do anything i think the danger if you're in austin shoes or connor
mcdavid or any of the top players is management can tell you hey connor you take that cheap deal
we're going to do this and this and that but oftentimes those are empty promises absolutely
that's why they always take the money instead the biggest thing and i and i'm almost certain i noted
it in that article but i haven't read it recently austin just wanted to see action he wanted to see
like he felt like this roster needed real work so did we we wanted to see action right but and i
actually i know i had a line in that story about that but like he just didn't want this wasn't
about a fancy spreadsheet this was like get to work let's see what the team is where are we at
and then he'll evaluate it and and as i say i don't think it's even a question anymore but i'm
not aware of him sort of officially he's just saying like like let's i'm in but but but look at
i i think at this point he maybe doesn't even need to say that it's on such a good footing that
you know he's coming he's coming back and that's great to hear but i think it's worth following up
on that right like it was worth us talking about that i mean this is the most and you know as much
as we're excited about darren radish and i am uh excited about emil andre actually now when i first
saw the trade i was like i don't understand but i'd never i i unlike most of leaf's nation was
not an emil andre expert leaf's nation told me afterwards well you just didn't watch him enough
and i'm like i know you didn't either but you're looking at those player cards online and good for
you i think it's more and that one clip where he's like giving it to someone yeah which i love
aggressive guy yeah i like you listen and you know what as a stockier guy i like the fact that
he's five nine and almost 200 pounds like let's go but uh other than jesse he could be fit in
pretty well on the i think just three square bodied man um but uh but but when i i just look
at this and i go okay so that so that's one thing number two darren radish okay really i think
everybody likes that move when does he want out sorry i'm just the main contention with that deal
and this is i want to talk pricing for a second not darren radish you broke down darren radish
awesome on on the cj show steve you have a great video on darren radish we don't need to keep
continuing to talk about the same stuff with darren radish but pricing is key because he's
make an eight and a half and he could have got 10 probably on the open market because he's a
right shot defenseman and there's nobody available maybe nine and a half would that be crazy he could
only get eight years though if in a sign right which is how they brought the aav down right
right like so he got so that would have been 68 over seven years he's got 68 million dollars in
this contract yeah so and i'm pretty sure the last offer from the lightning which was for fewer years
was like 43 million right so if you look at it he made a lot more money now he signed for longer
term but the lightning were concerned about the term and they weren't going to go as high on the
av so the what does and so darren radish i think is paid as a second defenseman on it on a great
squad for instance okay that's what i think the pricing's at like we are in our heads are still
in 2023 in terms of where the cap is eight and a half million dollars for a top defenseman back
then was top defenseman money top defenseman money now when we talk about what kale mccarr
is going to get what zach rowenski is going to get what quinn hughes is they're both signing
contracts this summer okay so so what what does that what's that price so people can understand
what this is likely to look like and i'm not asking for the exact figures cj because these
deals aren't done yet but you know what what range are we talking about for a 1a defenseman
well hughes and mccarr could each sign for 15 million and i wouldn't bat an eye
so you're talking might be the radish should be half of that half of that and you expect
or like 60 of it basically like a little more than half i think that's good value well if a guy gets
40 points 50 i don't even think the leafs care if it's good value honestly the leafs needed someone
who does the things he does well and they were like there's one of those guys available this
offseason we have to find a way to get them and they found a way to get them and you know what
it means something that they got him like 10 days before for agency because it removed that concern
at all like you go to july 1st even if you've got a rapport with the agent and i know we think
a lot of the deals are cooked and i think to some degree there's some truth there
nothing is official till it's official and there's always the chance it gets to july 1st and some
team comes in with something and it derails your plans simply can't say no to this my point is
there's real value that the leafs got this deal done early and they just went and got their guy
and i even like that john chico pretty candidly said we know there's risk here but this is we
needed them straying from the leafs a little bit because it's kind of a little it's not like you
No, I know. I know. But it's a league wide phenomenon that the Leafs are definitely a part of right now. Has the league exploded before, like in the week before the draft in a way that we haven't seen in like several years?
It feels like it. I can't, this is always a blurry time of year for me because usually I'm at the end of a long playoff run and travel. And so sometimes like it all blends together, but this feels different. Well, first of all, the cup ended a little sooner.
yes it did you know two years ago i believe game seven was june 24th of the cup final
so we sit here on june 22nd the cup's been handed out for a week already um so it's been more time
but yeah it's i like it i gotta be honest and from what i've heard in non-olympic years with
the schedule moving up starting next season the cup is going to continually be handed out a little
sooner in june not like crazy but like yay june 10th june 10th this will be like normal i think
that's perfect wow again olympic years push the schedule out because they take that break um but
the point is is we're gonna have more of this moving like this might be a new trend and we're
gonna have more of this time in the lead up to july 1st in the draft for other stuff to happen
and september won't be such a dead month either right because listen nobody needs eight friggin
pre-season games i'm i'm excited that they're starting at the end of september it means that
when we get out we don't even need four but i'm taking four because it's moving in the right
direction like listen labor day hits we come back to full three full three episodes a week and it
was five weeks sometimes six weeks sometimes before we got a real nhl game i'm just as you
know just as a fan i'm pumped about this now i want to ask about number one thing it's this is
yes or no gavin mckenna are they drafting him yes okay we'll move on from that uh matthew nice
he's out there this is not a yes or no you said earlier on the show the montreal thing isn't dead
Well, I don't think it's dead here.
It's hard to get a read on this one because their teams are very interested.
The Leafs are definitely been listening.
But the one thing I'm getting from other teams is they don't really know how serious the
Leafs are about moving them.
Like they don't know, are they just gauging the market?
Do they really want to get down to business?
And, and I'm not saying this as a negative, it's just, it's hard to handicap exactly where
it's going because, you know, I think we all understand the dynamics here.
Like the Leafs aren't trading this guy just to get rid of him.
you're only moving him because it's such a wow it's such a overwhelmingly amazing deal that
it's a true ground shaker and so i don't know if that's going to come but you know the canadians
need to get an impact forward this this offseason and ideally they're getting a center but i think
in their minds because they have a hole down the middle you don't want jake evans playing too high
in your lineup as he was in the playoffs got to know but do you expect oliver kapanen to step
been in that role do you want to do you want to hold him back from that i think ideally you're
getting a center but you're also look there's not a lot of centers no like vincent trochek's up there
on the trade board i think he could still be an option for montreal um larkin it doesn't seem like
that's a fit where the where the next center is like robert thomas is down at the bottom because
it doesn't seem like he's moving so i think montreal has to be open-minded and will be
open-minded about maybe adding a winger instead if it's if it's the right winger and then just
figuring it out maybe they can still get a center down the road or having slapping knives in the top
six would be insane for them by the way it's like that would be crazy completely nuts so montreal
was very serious obviously at the deadline and getting matthew knives and i think that they would
like to rekindle that but it doesn't seem like the fire is burning is that story true about the
late filing of the trade you know because we've heard one side which is they filed it at 301 and
the other side which i think probably comes from former leafs management via people that
actually that's not true and they weren't close and it was michael hage that they couldn't or
excuse me haggie um that uh they weren't uh that they weren't sure you know that montreal didn't
want to part with toronto needed for the deal to happen what what's your sense of that in full
like fully candidly i don't know 100 i've talked to a lot of people very close to this like in the
room multiple different people different sides of the table all that it's hard to get a sense
of exactly what happened um they did talk extensively about knives that much is 100
clear i'm led to believe the 301 story isn't true okay but i can't say because there's there's
people i respect that are saying it is true and i i can't no one has told me that is true so
that's the best way i can put it um it doesn't seem that plausible to me it seems odd well it
seems movie it seems like a b movie script right but like they definitely talked extensively that
day and and or days the last couple days leading up to the deadline about him um and they were very
serious about acquiring him and obviously montreal has the kind of pieces elise would need but i
don't know that they were turned away at the goal line on fourth and inches you know i'm curious to
know how people around the league talk about chica but because there's something in there that i
resent like about the uh they're not sure if they're serious about trading knives because
the guy i've been hammering for a couple years now is doug armstrong because he's such a tease
like uh uh tory krug is going oh he exercises no move uh colton pareko is going to buffalo
oh exercise is no move braden shen is going then he doesn't he goes a year later uh robert thomas
we've been doing this song and dance for two years jordan kairu we've been doing this song
and dance for two years and he doesn't get this reputation chaik has been back in the league for
the first time in half a decade for like five minutes and everyone's like oh get on with it
already so how do people talk about this guy who steve simmons categorized as a con man well i just
think that a lot of people don't know him super well uh you know obviously he was a gm for for a
few years but then he went away for like a length of time i just don't think he has the same depth
of relationship with his peers as a lot of gms do you know like doug armstrong i'm just taking like
the two but doug armstrong and jim rutherford have like been doing business for like 35 years
together i'm sure um longer than jake has been alive right like i'm just saying i'm sure it's
a little different. They can maybe cut to the chase more on exactly what they need or exactly
what they're thinking. You know, I think John has some work to do there. To be fair, he did
mention that actually at his opening press conference. He mentioned that if there was
one thing he realized he didn't necessarily do well in his first tenure when he was in Arizona
is prioritize building strategic relationships effectively in the industry. That's how you lead
to the kind of story Steve wrote. I think there is some, you know, I don't even know how much of
it is earned there might be a degree of it that's earned but like there's just general just not
they're unsure about them um and there's only one thing you can do is get up work every day
make them sure and and honestly i think some people you know some leafs fans are probably
unsure about them then they see it make some moves like hey i i like it so far my point is
everyone's open-minded to the possibility a that they you know we are rooting for him yes misrep
misjudged him or didn't see the whole picture and so i just think he's got a ways to go there
um with his colleagues but that doesn't mean he's doing a poor job either and you know specific to
nize like he's come in most of the front office that was engaged in those talks at the start of
march is gone right right brandon pridham's gone obviously brad true living's gone and so
there's probably a degree of getting up to speed for john chaikin like who's really involved
like what are they really offering i mean he can read the media reports and listen to the sdp and
i hope he does but but like he's got to get to the bottom of what's like actually on the table
in front of him and then make a decision and the hard part for him too is it's not like you know
he's probably watched matthew nye's play but like he's he's making a big call on a player that he
hasn't really worked with day to day either right so you know he's sort of in his press conference
after the darren radish um acquisition he kind of poo-pooed it a bit i don't know if you saw that
yes he didn't he didn't say it's nonsense like he just said it's not probable he'll find a package
that makes sense um but i don't know all i can tell you is nice his name is still out there in
the rumor mill with people i trust and so i think he's number nine on today's trade oh there you go
but he did that's that that represents us fall slide back i think he was like fifth oh okay all

i guess we're kind of working our way up the chain here but keith pelly he's probably not
the biggest fan of you uh after you write whoa whoa talk about his ai use at trade deadline day
that's who he's been texting all show but i wouldn't necessarily like i don't know i hope
he respects the way that that all went down in the end honestly yeah no i i think he it's not
about hate or not he understands media and i hope he understands what you were doing he also
was your boss but he was so far above me like it wasn't like we had day-to-day interactions or
anything are his paws still on the moves that chakas and sundine are making like is there i
assume the directive from him down is you can't stink that next year you have to go into it
thinking that you're going to compete and that's why you do something like darren radish because
you're thinking about tomorrow and that's it is he still heavily involved in the organization
he is but i i think he's letting his management team work like i don't get any sense that he's
making calls on darren radish or you know i mean like i think it's there was alignment when chica
and sandin were hired that this was not a rebuild you know that's that's even higher than keith
pelly like i don't think ownership wants any part of it that's edward a rebuild i mean and to be
honest the way it's gone i don't know that well let's we'll have to see like there's still a lot
that has to happen here but if you still have matthews and elander and then you won the first
overall pick and then you make a few other deals and you imagine that last year kind of went as
bad as it could go with that roster you change coaches i mean i'm not sure it might have been
i realized some of us were probably talking about rebuild last season because it was such a bad year
but it might have been a little ahead of schedule um and so chica took the job knowing this wasn't
a rebuild and and obviously you know that could change though like if this season what do you
think of retirement next summer if this season doesn't go yeah well exactly james myrtle doesn't
believe that they have enough to uh compete and that a rebuild is more necessary what side do you
fall on i think they have enough to compete okay i don't i'm not labeling them stanley cup favorites
by any means but i i think as long as you have matthews and he gets healthy which we don't have
answers these questions but if he has if he gets back to being a 50 goal guy and then you make some
like you know there just wasn't enough adjustments last year like there was not enough management
didn't do enough to help the team they didn't do anything and then and do anything and then
the coaching staff like the it was just a flawed fit so yeah um i resent that adam you didn't like
sammy blay i'm sorry yeah no i love that they claimed sammy blay put him on didn't play him
for three weeks played him and then like lost him again did you guys pick up on how caden primo's
being picked up on waivers is the reason brandon bussy ended i know yes he did talk about that
yes so cj i guess sorry i just wanted to no like just no like sliding doors like brandon bussy is
never a hurricane likely yeah we'd still have berube and true living if bussy came to toronto
uh but but i think i think um you know what i what i'm curious about now is sitting in john
sheikah's spot like i didn't you know nobody saw an emile andre trade happening right nobody saw
that the the wall trade i think we saw we thought a goaltender would go and then it seemed that a
goaltender without trade protection makes the most sense to go because i don't i honestly think
stoller's contract makes him untradeable right now yeah until he comes back in and says hey i'm
extremely healthy and very good because we know he's good it's is he healthy right well and the
answer to that is usually eventually no like not to be a smart ass he's played what 30 games is his
career high or once yeah once in his career twice like i mean you have enough track record at this
point to you got to plan on him being part of a three goalie thing that's that's and you know
when he's in there and he's healthy he's going to give you great goaltending yep but you're you're
not putting the whole you're not putting all your your basket of fortune on him so where do you
think if if you were in the pro scouting meeting because i've i made the argument to jesse and
Steve last week. I would love to be in that meeting. Oh, me too. I think we're going to find
out how good Toronto's pro scouting staff is this year. It's more important to me than their
amateur scouting. We always talk about amateur scouting. Their pro scouting has not gotten a
lot done over the last few years in terms of found value. Now, I think that has a lot to do with who
was in charge and the types of players they were targeting, that sort of thing. And it's just,
it was Brad Treliving's philosophy versus what Dubas's was before. So I'm curious about this
scouting staff when they're sitting in those meetings cj what do you think their number one
need is because i have a thought in my mind of what it's going to be but i don't know how these
guys operate no idea wow i still think they need to they need another defenseman and that's and i
say that with the idea that they're more than likely trading morgan riley out the door right
and so and carlo too or no not necessarily i'm not sure but i i can't rule it out okay
but morgan morgan for sure well the morgan decision isn't just it's not just a hockey
decision right it's it's you know i just feel like they're pretty far it's hard to put the
horse back in the barn there i think with having the discussions they've had and with you know
morgan getting more comfortable with the idea and trying to work together and finding the right
place like i just it feels you said last week that they they've come or that there's been some
progress made on that front it feels like there's progress but you know as i'm always told nothing's
done until it's done and so i think i think that that likely happens in end but what does it look
like i mean forget all the discussion around like there's a lot of the nurse for riley swap thing i
think that's bullshit there's no way is anyone credible said that no no one credible has said
that i mean i don't think it makes sense yes well does the least want to get bigger and slower again
i don't think so i just think but you're losing if you're losing attributes even riley not at his
best like he's he's an nhl defenseman obviously so the point is is like if you're just subtracting
him i think they need still some addition there so i think that's their number one need they'd
love a number two center i i'm not gonna look at it i just don't see the path to that right now
would that push Tavares down to three or would it make him a winger because they're weak on the
right side or both I think it's both like I think you make that move and you feel good that Tavares
doesn't have to be your number two center right and then you you try to camp and you try it into
the season and does he work as a three maybe we just use him on the second like I think you know
one thing you're hearing Trika talk about is flexibility or optionality like that but that
would give you that would give you more options right now the Leafs it's pretty obvious who
their two centers are right like there there aren't other options there you're not playing
anyone on that lineup in Tavares's spot over Tavares ever unless there's an injury and you
have to like you have no choice Max Domi no you got to join the grew crew yeah if you love Max
Domi 2C I love it that's the favorite thing about the Leafs Max would be great on the right side I
mean unfortunately we don't even know if Max gonna play this year like we don't really know what's
gonna happen so all we know is that it was serious yeah for the record it's not the grew crew it is
the minions the tavaras on the wing thing it always it scares me because they have so many
left shots william neilanders they're only right shot forward so you're yeah but you don't know
if 23 is still going to be there it's true so maybe maybe he places in that position but i
assume he'd be a left winger because of his shot so you're still so light on the right side right
i want to ask you this because jesse makes such a it's that's a great point um wow you got quillen
on the fourth line yeah like this is not i mean they have a lot of work called the cup champions
how dare you um no i'm not i'm just i don't think that will be i don't think that will be reflected
in reality no no i think in an ideal world right bo grew is their fourth line center right ideal
world is not the crew crew well i love bo grew i love bo group but what about a guy like and i've
heard so scott lawton the source i have on him told me that he was a little ticked at how it
ended in toronto uh not just the contract negotiations but the trade and whatever there
wasn't really any negotiation oh okay they didn't make like a concerted effort to keep him but to
extend him this is a new regime now a guy like that who loves the city i know he from what i
hear he loves la and i can't blame him and weren't there discussions with la over the weekend about
a new contract yeah they've been the kings are trying to sign them yeah they've been rumored for
i think you know four weeks now yeah um and i say that i really like scott lawton you're only
get he's gonna get overpaid of course he is like he's earned that right option he's in a great spot
what it could be but do you can the leafs overpay him can they afford with everything else they have
to do yeah can you afford to pay him like five and a half million every free agent that comes
off the board he's got to be like get your money buddy yeah love it because it's just gonna be the
scott like the only other six the only other free agent i can see guys like an adam yeah boone
jenner i like boone jenner i think he'd be great right but there's not a lot not a lot of the
center option and i think that's why in the modern nhl you make your team via trade yeah right there's
free agency is not going to be able the way to improve this roster it's got to be creative trades
by jayka yeah and that's maybe the argument for nye's maybe being traded is what you're saying
they have a lot of left shots there and you could maybe use him to get a second line center or
top pairing d or something like that that might be where it makes sense what does tro check cost
what do you think the Rangers are putting on that guy I've always been a Vinny Trocek guy but now
he's 32 and I have concerns about that what what do you have on on what do you think their asking
price would be it's got to be high it's high and they want like they want one of these big
multi-piece things like a player and a pick and a prospect the Leafs I just don't know if they
want to empty the cupboard right now not any Trocek they're trying to restock the cupboard
a little bit right yeah I know they're trying to do two things at once and that's hard to do
but they are trying to restock the cover like i don't see them wanting to trade ben danford or
or you know one of their like why not run it along a little longer and see if that guy might
actually be a player for you the rumor was that oel could have got them detroit's first round pick
and brad waffled at the end and then they went justin falk's route um is oel a guy that they
might try to move on from because i felt like he might be valuable just in the sense that he's
older can play further down the lineup but can move up and moves a puck right i i think he's
gotten a new lifeline here with this this new management staff that doesn't mean it doesn't
change he's still got two years on his deal i think yep um so maybe we see how it looks and
we might maybe he's in the rumor mill at next year's trade crazy value but you know the leafs
were really like they were grasping at straws last year to trade deadline right they they were
looking at a team that was on the way to finishing 28th who didn't own its first round pick obviously
they managed to keep it with winning the draft lottery but that was not a certainty who didn't
have any real prospects coming in the cupboard they were just trying to make they were trying
to find some gold out there and that's why a lot of stuff got thrown around i mean oh yeah it was
hard on him that that he was sat out of the lineup and because he likes it here well he really likes
it here his wife was having a kid like any day now right around the trade deadline like he had
he had made it clear to management he didn't want to be moved obviously i get it it's the
organization's got go back to our very first topic the organization's got to do what's best
for it when it you know decides something so we have to remember players when they have a chance
to put it to a team oh it's a bit of a two-way street jake mccabe's name's out there do you
think that's likely i don't think so is who's good is that out there uh yeah listen i'm just
throwing i don't know i don't know what you guys like where you guys well i'm pulling it out of
in the depths of the internet i know anything sometimes i do so sometimes our group check
it's like the weirdest like rumor am i the reason i do that though is because there is so much
there's a lot of people that everybody's name is out i i get that but i there's a ton of people
straight up pretending to be insiders right now there's a ton of people straight up pretending
that they know what the fuck they're talking about and it'll be like joe hockey 69 and it'll
be like i have heard like the sean dersey rumors so i i thankfully because i have a link to alan
i called him and said anything to this but it literally started from somebody going hey i heard
uh through a friend of mine who knows sean dersey that he thinks he's getting traded to toronto this
offseason and then it took off and then it all of a sudden became fact online and then i so i called
alan i was like hey this would be cool if it happened is it gonna happen and he's like fuck
no and so so when i came back to it this is where i like being the unk right because i'm just unaware
of all this that's why we bring this stuff up because i want to clear up the crazy names that
might be out there and at least allow people to understand okay here's where there's actual i think
okay i've already mentioned riley probably gone carlo i think they'd listen it's a possibility
i don't see them taking away from the blue line unless some crazy trade comes along sure like
i don't think they're focused on moving anyone else beyond that on the blue line okay okay
forwards any any forwards that names are out there other than nice and and guys that they
might be interested in I don't have that for you I'm sorry okay and and and what about
free just report this morning about Bobrovsky to Toronto or Bennington or Connor Halibut how
real do you think any of those are that that surprised a lot of people I think yeah I mean
I think the Leafs are they're of the mind they have to get better everywhere so why not look at
the best goalies too because here's the thing as I mentioned Stolarz is not your he's not going to
be your true number one you love hill to be you love act them off like i get it but like if you're
trying to be competitive next year i think you want those guys you still want them to have to
earn it some way and so it wouldn't surprise me at all if they're um if they're if they bring in
a veteran goalie the only leafs hockey john chike has been able to watch live this year is at coca
cola coliseum um did the marley's calder cup run boost anyone's stock in the organization
akhtimov probably the biggest 100 percent um you know mvp by the way is it akhtimov or akhtimov oh
sorry you guys you tell me i don't care okay marley's broadcast says akhtimov all right i
think that akhtimov what's great about that is they signed him to an extension just before the
playoffs yes they did oh yeah brother thank god so i'm just saying like they have some like they
have a runway with him to get him there um you know i think that they obviously they love the
decent cow and went down you know not that ass not that he had to he didn't have to prove anything
but that didn't hurt um and i doubt it hurt his development either playing hockey into june is
kind of what you want your players to be doing which is always why i say go to the world
championships if you get a chance because generally speaking you want to be get used to playing long
into the season um you know some of those other guys like the like aquiline or hames like i can
see those guys being in the mix as that sort of extra forward 12 forward kind of deal um but
let's face it this marley's team was stacked with guys that are that are not nhl prospects yeah
right like they had vinnie lettieri had a great run through the playoffs that guy can shoot holy
but i'm just saying he's not an nh he's played in the nhl over a long period of time
jib bounced around but he's not a prospect yeah you know alex kneelander is not a prospect right
outside of outside of ben danford and noah chadwick basically their whole decor as nhl experience
right right so we'll see what i don't know villeneuve maybe i don't know yeah but oh my
god he was he had 21 assists here's the thing i don't think anyone's being slotted into a job
other than cowan from that team next year like right now but they all are gonna have a much
better chance of of changing some minds when they get there to training camp yeah what like one of
the questions i was asked about villanoff specifically is they're like shouldn't this
mean something like it's not just that he won he had 21 assists i think it was 23 points it was
he was near a record he had giveaways well and the giveaway in game four i didn't really think
was on him and also the puck you are going to give it away from time yeah you take the good
with the bad it was mostly good they won i know i'm just i'm just giving you a shit i just look
at it as shouldn't it mean something it does mean something but the hl is not the nhl the hl is full
of players that guys get 100 points in the hl that never really crack at the next level like
tj brennan yeah there's a lot like it's a it's a thing it is a thing yep i'm trying to think of
the one guy the least actually had him for a little while seth griffith yeah yes he was still
playing and still killing it yeah but i'm just saying like some i'm not here to this isn't like
to in any way diminish Villeneuve's accomplishments but I think if you're the Leafs you need a little
more certainty and that's why those guys are now probably more in the mix and you got to work your
way in and some players do it like you know I know he was polarizing but Justin Hull kind of
followed that that path right it took him a while right but like and then he worked his way into
like a real job and got a pretty good free agent contract and like I I just think it's going to
still be a path for some of those Marley's guys.

anybody else has any leaves questions okay the cincinnati cyclones uh edmonton oilers um obviously
we talked quickly about the babcock stuff we don't need to go there i think the dickinson
contract at four and then conor murphy today at 4.1 million over five years uh sorry he gets that
per year not over five years like that's a really good deal $875,000 deal wow um i think in a vacuum
jesse steve chris i want to know what you guys think i think in a vacuum those are good deals
those are solid deals you're talking jason dickinson listen i know he's injured and that
sort of thing when edmonton got him and and never really played to his potential but he is he's a
defensive center that's going to take a lot of the defensive minutes away from guys that shouldn't
be playing them like connor mcdavid right and they needed that and they badly need that element
in their lineup when they traded for and there are no other guys available so that also but
but i think there's a little bit of oiler ptsd going on because of wallman underperforming his
contract last year trent frederick's contract's a disaster because it's closer to five million
than it is four million and it's forever and ever amen it's 3.85 oh it's 3.85 oh i thought it was
4.8 it just feels that way it feels like it's 10 but when you're healthy scratch in the first
year of an eight-year deal it's bad yeah it's bad so something has gone wrong uh i don't hate
the connor murphy deal i don't hate the jason dickinson deal in fact i think they're actually
pretty solid considering what's going to be out there. Like, I think people need to get ready
for a world where Logan Stanley is going to make like five and a half. You know, Luke Shen is going
to have some crazy monster deal at his age or something like that. But my point is, I think
the issue in oiler land is, OK, we're resigning these guys. That's fine. But how are we going to
get better? And Stan, my question for Stan Bowman and my question for you via that is, how do the
Oilers get legitimately better is it doubling down on the talent they have or do you expect
them to make a swing this offseason well look these guys are new players to the team they are
and they are a big reason why the Oilers lost in the first round is they had four injured centers
including Jason Dickinson and so I would say you might get better by having a full year of those
guys and let's get back to next year's playoffs and have McDavid and Dreisaitl at their best and
zach hyman had his best and you know using being able to use dickinson the way you want to use him
um to me i like the contracts i mean they spread out they spread out the term so there's you know
let's face it the let's just only look at those contracts for next season they fit in the oilers
have a pretty tight cap picture those those guys wanted to stay they worked with the organization
i don't think most most teams i don't think four years from now matters the oilers it matters even
less oh exactly it is it is all these next two years and really this next season uh with you
know basically mirroring what mcdavid signed for so um i i like the the start to the summer for
them but you're right there's not going to be a lot of ways for them to get better the goaltending
position it sounds like a broken record they got if what are they doing there my connor ingram ufa
yeah my name is tristan jari next season my first game is going to be played in
edmonton yeah yeah oh you could have said bakersfield i know but i don't see them yeah
that's it that is of all the disaster stuff that people talk about like people talk about
trent frederick to me tristan jarry is the most damaging contract we have on the books even more
than nurse it's far more than nurse it's crazy that uh you uh the penguins have been brought up
in nurse rumors i'm like stan bowman should never call kyle dubas ever again yeah i mean the fact
he gave brett kulak away and that i know yes and skinner would be done right now no contracts off
your they could do anything now they're locked up with jari it's ridiculous it was easy not a good
idea no three good months of a guy that was they tried to wave and couldn't the previous year that
was what was so insane he was waved twice you could have had him for free twice two different
times oh my god do executives ever like call you or text you just to talk about a trade and go
holy moly yeah i mean we all do that it's like most people that work in a hockey business are
hockey fans like yeah at heart right so yeah everybody's like holy shit did you see what
they did what the fuck yeah yeah similar reaction here okay yeah i'm not saying specific to that
deal i don't have a like i don't remember a phone call but like i am i would say that's a part of my
daily like my daily calling around people i know and like it's like is nurse on the team next year
and if not does he get a good return or is it just let's clear the space i think the space is
worth more more and and i say that like darnell actually i think we're at the point with darnell
where he's like definitely underrated in a degree like i agree i agree like he actually still plays
a lot of the games he's still very healthy and available being available matters in this league
yeah no shit look at our goaltending here and you know he played a lot of minutes for the oilers and
it's not all a disaster and despite what you may want to read or hear uh the the biggest thing
working against him is that he made too much money and he's paid like a frontline defenseman
and he's probably better slotted as a second pair guy i i don't think they're gonna i don't i don't
see any problem moving them well why not a place like chicago who's got tons of space and needs a
veteran defenseman it's like to me it's like absorb that cap hit um you base probably get
him for like remember when chicago got mark andre flurry for basically future considerations
because he was making seven million even right off the vesna year like why couldn't it be a
deal like that oilers get their cap space chicago gets nurse and then i'm just saying chicago
because they've got a ton of space and they need to get better now or san jose or something like
that and then both teams walk away and and that's it like does there have to be a return for nurse
are they gonna retain on nurse like is that what i think it's better not to retain on nurse if you
can right so their focus would be not to they might have to that you don't often see teams
retained for multiple years though like have you got he's got four years left yeah yeah you don't
often it has happened the Leafs did it with Kessel once upon a time San Jose with Carlson Carlson
San Jose absolutely had to do it but in general weirdly Nashville did it on Ekholm for like three
years when he did for like a quarter mil it was odd but you know it's just that is unusual because
a you don't want to tie up that spot for that long because you only get three at any given moment you
can only have three players with with retained salary so I think Edmonton will do everything
has power not to retain and then it maybe bite the bullet if they have to i know they don't i
don't think the return is the thing here no the getting nine and a half million dollars in cap
space if they're able to do it is that's the that could be huge for them i also i hope they use that
9.25 to really go do something like interesting they're gonna sign brandon sod you can't do
larkin i don't think he'd go to edmonton but i hope that they go and they spend that on a really
high end five brandon saunds yeah five brandons you are never gonna drop that no no that's when
i knew stan bowman's not great at this that's my personal opinion that doesn't reflect anyone else
on the show but i'm not a fan um when just in his hockey moves i'm like what are you doing but
i guess the contracts that he signed i guess i am a a fan of nurse i think is gonna have a
renaissance year next year wherever he plays if especially if he goes to a good team i think he's
gonna be like a guy where he doesn't have to be oh the guy he's just guy i don't want to play
against grumpy Darnell Nurse.
No, I think he will have...
I actually feel the same way about Morgan Riley,
who I've been extraordinarily tough on.
I think he goes to the right team in the right scenario
and not in a Brube system, especially,
because that's when his game really fell off.
Like, if the Leafs hung on to Morgan Riley with Jim Hiller,
I'm like, as long as we're not playing a 1-3-1,
I don't... I'm not going to die.
Are you having second thoughts here?
I'm not having second thoughts.
I think it's going to... I think you said it perfectly.
It's hard to put the horse back in the barn on that one,
but i do think based on where they're going a puck moving defenseman would be great
just don't play him top line friggin minutes anymore and that seems you just got darren
radish who's probably quarterbacking power yeah but darren radish is a right side guy
no i know i'm aware but yeah like there's only like but you know how coaches are they're gonna
be like no morgan riley's played top line of this you got to take him away you got to take the toys
away that's my point i'll be on okay number one isn't the barn where horses go i'm very confused
Well, it just wasn't at in the morning when they're out there and they want to run.
Oh, okay.
I never understood.
When they're tired at the end of the day.
I was like, that's where horses go.
Yeah.
Why is it difficult to put the horse where horses go?
Well, it's like kids.
Oh, yeah.
That's fair enough.
Difficult to put the kid back in the chair.
Got it.
How's Leo at bedtime?
Yeah.
Actually pretty good.
Yeah.
Ah, that's a lie.
That's sometimes good.
Often good.
The other thing is like with Morgan Riley, like I'm always like, do something, do something.
Ah, make a move.
i'll be honest i am and i know i'm being ridiculous um so i'm trying to override that
feeling but it's just where the cap is going i'm like well maybe now isn't the time to get
rid of them but yeah that means it probably is right it's gonna hit you in the fields when they
trade yeah longest serving it's gonna suck almost a thousand games yeah i know it's like is it fifth
most in history and a great person and a great ambassador there's nothing you can say bad about
more great moments and he's been through some shit with you guys oh yeah he was there for
through everything everything yeah drafted in 2012 he was there for 4-1 he's been in there
the entire time this podcast has existed yeah like that's crazy he was drafted a year before
we started when he was picked i was heartbroken i stayed up till like two in the morning i was
in scotland uh with the fifth pick with the fifth pick well and i'm like oh my god they got the w
they got the whl kid who played 17 games great and then he ends up being you should revisit that
2012 draft it there's not a lot of great things that came out of that draft he's one of them i
think vasilevsky is another one at one point matt murray was on that list but yeah matt did win two
cups philip forrestberg might have been the year before uh maybe point is galchenyuk went third
that year yakupov first ryan murray second riley was a great pick yeah like it was very good i'm
not saying they got the number one player out of that draft but they got pretty close when burke
says he had him first i believe him yeah yeah at the time i thought oh yeah brian this is one of
your lines but yeah that's that's aged pretty well it aged pretty yeah very well so the the
last team i want to ask you about before you leave sir is uh and we hate when you have to leave but
we're going to do a little there's a little bit of show afterwards that we're going to do i want
to ask you about the seattle kraken which i know in our entire time together i never have um because
the seattle kraken all relationships must grow and evolve that's that's right cj thank you and i
and the thing is the seattle kraken seem to understand that they're completely irrelevant
outside of seattle and and and they are and that's not that's not me being trying to be
insulting they've basically said uh we're doing a full organizational look and we're going to
publish this document to our fans and we we've got we're walking some players to free agency
we got to resign some guys they made a major trade yesterday they made a major resigning
yesterday are we seeing finally a new era of the seattle crack and operating in a more aggressive
stance because it seems like before it's like hey we're all out of ideas and we haven't done
anything yeah that's that's it's been in the works for a few months now like they tried to
get a timey panarin which i love which which you know they fell short in their efforts but they
were like in there they they obviously made the change to jason botterill being the gm i think
that was last summer they did this audit thing of their front office this summer like all those
things are happening because people in very powerful positions in the organization are
asking questions and and i think a lot of the questions maybe not as pointed as yours
are getting at the same thing though like okay where is this going what's happening
five years in jerry breckheimer's on the phone going what the hell guys what are we my movie's
failing and not my team too sorry i'm kidding uh but yeah what's the what is what are the seattle
kraken going to be going forward like what kind of they hope to be more exciting well that's good
they hope to be better offensive team and that's why they focused on getting a sam iscavage it's
why they traded for bobby mcmahon and re-signed him it's why i think they'll line up a brink's
truck and leave it at alex tuck's front door on the morning of july 1st if he remains unsigned
by the buffalo sabers is shane right getting moved they're open to that so they are what
Leafs?
Why does it have to be the Leafs?
They need a center.
They need a center bad.
What are the Leafs sending back?
I don't know.
What do they want?
What do they value him at?
I mean, he doesn't shoot.
We'll ask the question, CJ.
His biggest problem is he doesn't shoot the puck
and it drives coaches crazy.
Yeah, but the biggest plus is he's still relatively young.
He's still on his entry-level deal
because they told it a couple times.
Right.
He's not paid very much.
I get it.
He hasn't yet become the player that he's projected to be.
didn't he have a 35 40 point season uh two years ago i think the point is is like he's not he's an
nhl player so 44 points there you go there's still some debate about how impactful he's going to be
but like i bet he's going to be in the nhl a long time so they're not just giving them away
but they have to be more open to getting they want offensive flair they want to be able to score more
goals um and i think they're open to doing it multiple ways whether that's trading someone
like right or maybe it's just a simple old-fashioned way paying alex talk too much
money but being the highest bidder uh on july 1st i mean that's that's definitely in the air that
they they want to make an impact they want to you know i'm not saying that'll solve all their
ills by any means but i think it's a start is they're going to be more aggressive in how they
operate i think there is a morgan riley for shane wright deal in there somewhere i love that wow
really i think i think that's not a great defenseman if you can convince
seattle that he's still that and seattle and toronto's getting shane right back they are
very little money they're a little slow on the back end the seattle cracker you look at the
guys they have i mean vince dunn's great but you know adam larson has never been quick i don't know
where brandon montour is that i haven't i haven't checked the they already have two power play
quarterback and done in month damn it maybe they can take one of them back but but siege like
they're trying to be relevant and exciting yeah and they're trying to win ultimately and and
they haven't done enough winning i think that's that's what will make them more relevant i guess
there's relevancies gained a few ways if you make a massive splash that helps like people are aware
of you that you're out there doing things but also they got to win more and and so you know i
i don't i still don't see them like one or two moves from being an impact team in the league but
i think you're going to see them consistently you're going to hear them being around
the the big moves that are made in the league because they they recognize they have to do that
sort of stuff i wonder about the seattle kraken and players like no trade lists because for a
while it was canada and buffalo i don't know if buffalo's still on those lists um i don't know
how i think it's still on some yeah it's still on some i'm sure but like seattle it's like listen i
don't want their like we know it was on colton preco's list uh buffalo that's right that's right
yeah he said no we had a full no move but you know so seattle like if you were to have 10 teams
would they be one of the 10 for a lot of guys i think it depends don't they have a favorable tax
situation this is not i'm a little outside my jurisdiction seattle yes me too that's why mason
marchman was traded there i'm pretty sure they they have a pretty favorable tax situation you
know it's it's just no i think he signed there and then he was traded to columbus no he signed
in dallas and then ah sorry yeah yeah yeah and then he went to columbus yeah because it wasn't
working i think look at they're they're not a destination at this point in time but but i don't
know them to be also like everyone's like i'll never go there it's a cool city to be honest it
is a cool city to be honest a lot of that like each player has but they it's like canada and
then it's like california teams because they just the taxes they're so high you know what i mean and
and i know that sounds kind of crazy but these guys only make this much money for such a finite
of my time and you can live anywhere once you're retired and all that stuff so um it's not always
done by like hey i don't want to live here it's just i don't want to pay 44 taxes when i can pay
25 over here last question unless anybody's got any seattle stuff uh ryan o'reilly now that chris
mcfarland is the head of the nashville predators does ryan o'reilly still have fake no trade
protection uh or is he well and truly potentially on the market it doesn't seem like they're of the
mind to move them right now okay um same with steven stamkos i think i think it's going to be
more let's see how the year starts like those those names could be in play come next year's
trade deadline depending on what happens in nashville but obviously both guys liked it
there like both like both guys want to be there they both chose to sign there as free agents it's
a cool place um well and it's like nashville should get good again they have you know chris
mcfarland i have a lot of respect for as a gm uh it's a city people want to live in they also have
the tax thing they have the weather's a little better than a lot of other places in the winter
that in that have nhl teams like it's a cool city like i i think that they will get back to
respectability now is it on the same time frame that o'reilly's still a useful player that that's
definitely an open question um but i don't i don't sense he's on the market in a meaningful
way right now got it um are we sleeping on them a bit they have an unbelievable amount of picks
well yeah yeah well i guess we didn't talk about them once so we're definitely sleeping on yeah
like i mean sleeping on them not as like they make tender or anything like yeah as a as a
trade destination for the next week or two yeah they should and they should be in on this stuff
you know they have an interesting situation too like roman you'll see their captain is coming
towards the end of his career like can they get good in the window and keep him
i i i think it can go a lot of directions i'll say this i bet in five years time nashville is
a really good team the nhl again i just don't know what the path i don't know how rocky it's
going to be between then and now got it but they've been rebuilding for a while right they
they just don't have the high impact at the top of the lineup younger guys yep yep like they're
an older team in their key like the key spots on the roster are all dotted by very veteran players
that aren't going to be able to do what they do forever right okay and i don't see the next wave
in position yet that's what they got to figure out all right well cj thank you so much
two just quickly two numbers on your trade board 16 and 18 i just wanted to quickly where are they
going it doesn't happen 16 is the number two overall pick on friday that's san jose's pick
does it happen is it like morgan riley tron and where could it go i i think it's not that likely
just because no team has like ever traded that pick on purpose in 20 years uh the only times
a top pick has moved is like stood slow was by accident with san jose because they were worse
than they expected um but san jose's open to listen i just i don't know that anyone do you
know much that thing is worth yeah like i think we could come up with trades and you're probably
going to still be light yeah it's worth a lot because a number two overall pick not only do
you have to have a really shitty season you have to win a lottery to get it that's the only way or
or lose the first lottery but like the point is is like you have to be bad and lucky and nobody
really wants to put their stock in that like vancouver was really bad and then they were
unlucky and they fell to the third pick yeah this year i'm just saying like so to pry that out of
someone's hands is crazy that's why unfortunately jesse that thing i don't have the exact numbers
it was at like number five overall and then it went to ten and now it's heading in the wrong
direction that's falling down the singles chart but i still want it on there because i know san
jose is very open to listening and maybe something you know i'm always i'm a hopeful optimistic guy
I'm hopeful something surprising happens here in the next five years.
And then number 18 is Simon Nemech.
Is that likely to happen?
Definitely possible.
Okay.
You know, I've heard a couple of things.
Dougie Hamilton is on this board as well, but I've heard that Dougie is actually liked
by the new management.
So even though he's been sort of a prime trade target out there, I'm not certain they're
anxious to move him.
You know, he's more of an analytics type of guy.
Like he ticks a lot of boxes for an analytically inclined GM like Sonny Mehta.
Nerds love Dougie.
Yes.
Always have.
So I'm just saying Dougie isn't necessarily out,
but Simon Nemech is an RFA.
He's asking for a lot, is he not?
Well, he's got a case, dude.
Look what Luke Hughes signed for right beside him.
But CJ, his player card says bad.
Well, I didn't know that.
But I'm just saying he's got value.
So it's not a player New Jersey's trading just to trade.
They haven't come to the conclusion they have to move him,
but I think they're willing to dangle him to see Steve Dangle.
to see what kind of forward
it could bring back
and something might make sense
and that's why he's there.
Got it.
Okay, Chris Johnson,
thank you so much for joining us.
We love you, CJ.
You're the best.
Now don't get a parking ticket.
Love you guys.
One last thing.
Jesse, you specifically requested
on Friday that we do
a Michael Kesselring segment.
Yeah, I can do this in 30 seconds.
Give it to us.
Let's go.
Mike Greer is a genius.
He got Jake Wallman
from the Detroit Red Wings
and they paid him to take
that player. Then
flip Jake Walman to Edmonton
and he got back an
asset there as well. And then he used
this first round pick to send
it to Buffalo to get Kesselring.
He is trading a paperclip into
a house. It is a fantastic move
for the San Jose Sharks. And still has a first.
And still has a...
Their own first. Yeah, he went from 20 to
27. Yes. Listen, I'm not gonna
fantastic i'm a leaf fan forever but the leafs have never treated me as well as the san jose
sharks have and so i will always cheer for the san jose sharks as long as they're not playing
the leafs uh and it's a fantastic fantastic bet to make because kesselring was a big part
of the peterka deal of those two pieces one has worked out tremendously and the other one's been
like ho hum he got injured he had a high ankle sprain i believe it was uh after his initial foot
injury out of training camp and he just hasn't had the opportunity to find his place they have
so many defensemen that they can make this move here and uh internally the moving up from 27 to
20 amongst nhl team cj was actually talking about this uh the other day that is regarded as a late
second round pick in terms of value that's so interesting just that jump seven seven spots
yeah because you now you get yeah how do you value that that's so cool teams look at those places
because it's not just,
oh, a second is a second
is a first is a first.
So they look at that as value
and Kesselring,
somebody that there
wasn't really a future there.
They need the cap space
for all of these guys
that are RFAs
that they want to bring back.
I like it for San Jose,
but that's why I like it for Buffalo.
Yeah, I mean,
I liked it for both sides.
Yeah, they're now they're back
in the Alex Tuck conversations,
too, I heard today.
So it's very interesting for Buffalo.
I think this is a player
you could move off of,
and that's a lot of value
to move up
for an expendable player.
And then San Jose
literally got Kesselring for free.
Right.
Because of Steve Iserman's ineptitude.
Wow.
Steve Iserman, thank you for Michael Kesselring.
It's at the San Jose Shark.
Dylan Larkin, San Jose Shark.
Whoa, man.
Maybe you can get that first round pick back.
My name is Chris Johnston.
Is there anything?
I mean, I'm sure there is.
I'm sure we missed something, but I tried to get as many things as we could.
Marlies, damn it.
Go ahead.
Hey, they won the Calder Cup.
Yay.
Oh, I made a video about it.
And they still won the Calder Cup.
Yeah.
they're they're celebrating at real sports because what but yeah because well the world
cup's on right like there's so much going on in this yeah they had a big celebration in the
parking lot next to coca-cola coliseum i guess then rico um that parking lot as far as i know
doesn't exist right now it fits like 80 people yeah but where are they gonna go yeah they can't
do the maple leaf square i think i don't i don't know if they can i was gonna say they should do
it in the arena it's such a pain in the ass down there like i was there for the world cup right
oh go to real sports that's crazy or we should offer it here calder cup should be in this building
right now i want it no it's it's great uh they won won the calder cup um we'd come back win
letary with a bomb arter actum of playoff mvp made a save right there at the very end
cowan scoring some key goals that's the and apparently ben danford fit in perfectly dan
benford yeah man love dan people were saying hey not bad not bad well and like stepped right into
like the third round yeah like that's what i mean pro games like i wasn't sure how much he was going
to play at all no he was significant there were some there were some guys that i think uh really
changed uh well they definitely changed my perception of them like will villain of 21
One assist and one playoff run.
Bo grew was great as a two-way guy.
It's fun.
Really fun group.
I'm glad they won.
That's it.
We'll leave it there.
I'm sure there's stuff that we missed and I'm sure this afternoon we'll know that Mike Babcock is officially signed.
Riley trade.
Yeah.
It's all going to happen.
David trade.
On your drive home, it's going to happen.
Oh, 100%.
He's shooting from the car.
Oh, why not?
Why not?
It's a little dangerous.
Yeah.
But he laughed in the face of danger.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
