Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the task rabbit app you should
Starting point is 00:01:10 download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle we had a live show last night and it was so nice to get there in my ford f-150 it might even be cooler if i had a ford f-150 tremor because they are the sickest but one of the things that they're known for is obviously the comfort advantage there's there the the fact that you're sitting up high and you get the big cab and you're you're you know even in traffic on the dvp i could peer over people's roofs i know how far it's going to be you get to you get to see what's going on ahead of you that's right like a general yeah exactly yes yeah general wild is what they call me also it's great for hauling your toys and being outdoors and you know canada you're santa if you're and if you're santa that's hauling your toys exactly
Starting point is 00:01:54 modern solutions you know reindeer not today no today we use f-150s that's right to drop the presents around the world uh the tremors towing 10 000 pounds 10 000 presents yes max yeah they're well probably even more jess yeah like this is crazy he's probably hauling the reindeer uh and listen uh it's a an amazing off-road amazing on-road and and i can tell this and in sky and in sky flies around the world and you can switch over to like whatever you're driving and so are you driving on a slippery road are you driving in snow are you driving on sand are you driving in rocks are you hauling are you flying around on christmas eve and making sure that all the kids around the world only the good ones are getting their presents ford f-150 dot
Starting point is 00:02:38 sorry ford.ca slash f-150 there you go build out your tremor right now again it's ford.ca slash f-150 the best truck on the road i'm a little biased the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake all right i guess before before anything happens i'm gonna make i'm gonna say one sentence i'm gonna switch the topic for a second and then we're gonna come back to the topic that the original sentence pertains to are you ready this is too many instructions for the first time in a decade the Toronto Maple Leafs are last in the Eastern Conference but before we get to that let's talk about something good I want to take a quick minute to talk about the Oshawa Generals
Starting point is 00:03:32 the live show all of the all the fun we had last night we saw Oshawa take on the Kitchener Rangers and then we all made our way over to Bond Street Event Center to do a live show and we had uh hoshi wang uh and sam robert simon wang simon wang yeah because he goes by simon um come in and and the episode is out now so you can watch it these kids first off uh simon wang's story is insane this is a guy that fell in love with hockey in beijing at a at four and a half years old okay and at 10 or 11 convinced his mom you know what i need to go to the other side of the world to play hockey i gotta go to toronto and she was like you're right tiny son i will let you do that That sounds good.
Starting point is 00:04:17 And also, I'm going to build an arena. And Sam Roberts, 16 years old, first season in the OHL. He is Gary Roberts' son, and he was awesome as well. I have to thank those guys. I wanted to just say that every time we work with the Oshawa Generals, they are just an absolute first-rate organization. If you couldn't make it last night, get out to a game. They're always fun.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Steve and Jesse and I used to just go when we had more time and less kids. And it's a very, very special place to watch a game. And it was very cool to work with them. So thank you to the entire crew in the General's organization that helped set that up. And obviously, Bond Street Event Center, too, because it's one of the most fun shows of the year. Bond Street's so good.
Starting point is 00:04:57 It's sick. I will always stump for a good Oshawa business. Bond Street, baby. It's the bar upstairs, the cafe. You can have a wedding there. You can have a concert there. It's awesome. My favorite part about Bond Street is the food.
Starting point is 00:05:10 It is delicious. They have a lobster roll, which isn't something you find very often in the GTA, but they got one and it's delicious. Hey, you want to go for lobster rolls in Oshawa? Yes. Yeah, you can get that. It's really cool.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Really cool. I ate well when I was there, baby. They got some good places, man. It's a good food scene. Good food scene. So anyway, I just wanted to say one quick thank you to the Oshawa Generals Organization and to you if you bought tickets.
Starting point is 00:05:34 We loved having you there. Now, the Toronto Maple Leafs, getting back to my original point or your last place in the Eastern Conference, There are only two teams below them in the standings, and I believe those are the Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues right now, which is an unbelievable sentence to say on November the 24th. Unbelievable, unthinkable on October 1st that we could be saying this, and yet here we are. They should probably do nothing. Well, so let's talk about just today.
Starting point is 00:06:03 So they did not have a practice practice today. They had some off-ice stuff that they were working on to give people a bit of a break. um uh you know one of the issues and we're going to talk about we're going to dive into this a little bit but we led yesterday's show with it or last day's show with it so i don't want to i don't want it to be the first thing we talk about um the injuries mccabe is fine and is an option for wednesday we'll play uh carlo and stallers were not on the ice uh matthews and tan of were along with nize although limited um stallers is still quote a ways away from returning without that that's not a timeline and matthew's knives and wah are close and we'll know more about
Starting point is 00:06:42 their status i think brube said that tomorrow he should know their status for wednesday so you know uh this is a um i want to talk about the montreal game specifically let we'll talk about the injury timeline stuff later we did kind of hit it uh but jonah siegel hit it again in the athletic and so we are going to come back to it but that Montreal game was it's so crazy to think but for the first 10 minutes I thought the Leafs looked really good this is what no one's going to remember about that game and it's what makes them more mystifying it'd be so easy to just sit here and be like they're bad uh Habs good Leafs bad um for full 60 minutes outclassed one team was better than the other there you go the leafs were at least the better team for the first 10 11 12 minutes
Starting point is 00:07:35 hab scored their first goal it was over it was completely over uh they won the rest of the first period and that second period like people were laughing at me because i said that's the hardest i've ever seen the habs dominate the leafs and they're like what about 2021 well that single period though of hockey was globe trotter shit like they outshot them what 16 to 1 but it wasn't even the shots necessarily it was them flinging the puck wherever the hell they wanted and i've never in memory sat there and advocated for a goalie who was standing on his head wall was unbelievable in that game they should have lost 10 nothing i'm like seriously 10 nothing i advocated for the leafs to pull wall just to save him and they did and they did it took
Starting point is 00:08:34 until the fourth goal but like what the hell was he supposed to do and with anthony stallers in witness protection because they won't tell us what the hell is going on other than he's a ways away which is not a measurement of time uh they have to protect this goalie and so they said all right hill to be we're just going to go ahead and throw you to the wolves and that seemed to get their attention and what was funny you know leave score late to make it four two it wasn't even that late like for them to come back at that point with the amount of time that was left like producer Drew's in my ear and the little scamp that he is he's like a comeback here would not even be that insane like the Leafs have uh plenty of comeback wins this season the Habs have not been a
Starting point is 00:09:25 particularly good third period team there's not a good goaltending team either like no it's been Montego has been unplayable Dobish has been good Dobish's numbers in that game were good but I thought he looked beatable like I thought he looked shaky and so what I don't understand is how between the ears this team is like yeah there's injuries but Craig Berube keeps saying it and like I'm using his words as ammo for well maybe he needs to go because he cannot push the right buttons on this team I don't know if anyone can which is the devil's advocate for keeping them yep but he can't push the buttons on this team to get them to pull the head their head out of their ass they were fine for the first 12 minutes they allow a goal shut off um and then
Starting point is 00:10:17 once they pulled wool they seemed to like just boot back up i don't know how you fix that jesse you know one of the things berube has said game after game after game and this is something we've said for almost 10 years is until you dig in and play 60 minutes you're not going to see sustained success now the team has been very very lucky and you mentioned this on the show last night with regular season success, but they had a lot of game breakers and there was a lot of games. And we've talked about it on this show. It came up all the time where, you know, they wouldn't play for 55 minutes and then score three goals in the last five, tie it up, bring it to overtime and win. It happened all the time. Yeah. They can't do that anymore. And they got a lot of
Starting point is 00:10:58 talent sitting on the on the sidelines. And I've seen people go, well, Montreal is officially better and maybe they are. But the the Leafs do have a lot of talent sitting on the sidelines. Is there any part of you that thinks, OK, we still haven't seen the full Leafs yet? I don't know if that even matters at this point based on how they've played even when they were the full Leafs at the beginning of the season. Now they're going through this injury slump and they're not playing well with the guys who are available to play with them. And then we're getting to the point here. I know they're like four points out of a playoff spot and people look at that, but they are last. And if there's not something immediately where they're climbing out of this hole, we just got to think about this season like it is a lost season and not not a lost season, like everything's death and everything like that. oh my god we're losing our fandom and the team's over just a year where nothing goes right in terms of a lost season and you step back and you real retool for next season because this does happen this isn't very common in what the Leafs have done for the last nine seasons there is a reason that
Starting point is 00:12:03 they currently have the longest consecutive playoff streak out of any team in the National Hockey League it's because you don't usually go nine consecutive seasons with without missing the playoffs so one of these years was bound to happen whether you want to blame it on the gm for not putting enough pieces together on the enough talent onto the roster for them to be competitive for the playoffs this year or if you're blaming it on injuries either way we're going to find out how the season plays out and we're going to have some answers you got to look towards next season i was looking at um from 2016 to 2017 a cumulative result of the all of the teams of the national hockey league this is uh from like i said the 16 season the beginning of it to the end of the 2025
Starting point is 00:12:47 season in terms of total points or total wins accumulated the toronto maple leafs sit third they have a 408 wins they are four third in the nhl third in the atlantic they have 408 wins 214 losses and 78 ties in that span of time like steve said uh they were third in the atlantic because of the only trail the bruins and the lightning and you go by points as well they are third they have 894 points in that span the shame of the toronto maple leafs is that during this journey they have nothing to show for it outside of the regular season yeah they they have one of the most successful franchises in this league over the course of a decade that's awesome that is successful that is a thumbs up to the shanee era for doing something good in the regular season
Starting point is 00:13:45 but they always fell short in the playoffs and we're reaching the end of this point because this season i don't think is going to go well i think i have enough evidence to be confident in the rest of this season and say that this team is going to be either fighting for a playoff spot in the bottom of this in the bottom of the east playoff race or they're going to miss entirely i think we have enough evidence oh yeah i think this is where it's going this is probably where it's going to be barring a miracle so this is the one year that they're going to have the blip in the radar that's how you got to move forward we had our success in the regular season this isn't going to be one of those years because these years tend to happen for very good teams
Starting point is 00:14:21 last year was boston and new york sometimes it's tampa you brought up that franchise sometimes times it's colorado this happens this is the leafs year to wear that let's all put on our shirts and wear it let me let me let me give you some stats here the leafs at home actually are not bad i mean by the way i also misspoke st louis vancouver calgary and nashville are the only teams currently worse than the leafs um and that's by points percentage so that's the most accurate way to look at it home and away splits are crazy uh they are the reverse rangers uh eight four and three on the road which is just eight and seven by the way i just want to throw that out there that's eight and seven you mean at home at home excuse me yeah and then away they're one in six they're the worst
Starting point is 00:15:06 road team in the league and they are about to if i'm not mistaken as of now go on a five or six game road road here they're in the middle of it they're in the middle excuse me yeah yeah you got to come home in the middle of it but yeah yeah and i i'm anthony petrelli wrote something that i thought that was crazy he's like compounding the issue is who they've lost to he said they've played division rivals montreal buffalo boston and detroit eight times total they've won two of those games with one of those wins coming in overtime so out of a possible 16 points they grabbed four you win two more of those games you're like we're not even having this conversation well no because because the extra two three four points that you get from that puts you in a
Starting point is 00:15:54 completely different conversation because of how tight things are now uh one of the things that he brought up and and one of the things that we've had under the microscope and it's probably been like the fifth or sixth most important story because the player hasn't been playing but steve right before austin matthews got hurt you brought up his deployment and there was some i think it somebody on Twitter that had it where he's getting all these defensive zone starts and it's crazy and whatever. And when he went down, he was not a point of game player. And that was killing my fantasy team. Again, I'm just going to just bring that up. But I want to say this. This is interesting. He said, I was curious about the Leafs penalty kill. This is Anthony Petrelli
Starting point is 00:16:31 without Matthews. And so far, they are 11 for 12 or 91.7 percent in five games. But they have Lawton, Lawrence, Yarncroke, and even Nick Waugh, who appeared in two of those games, and it's quite obvious that they're good at it. Why are, when Matthew Nyes and Austin Matthews coming back, why are they immediately going to be slotted into that? Because we know that they will. And is that the right idea? Because now we have to get a little bit granular. We have to, you know, we've talked about Domi and the role Domi's playing, the fact that he's swimming. We've talked about the fact that that Domi-McMahon-Robertson line just does not work. Robertson, who was like six points in six games hasn't i think he's got one goal in the last week and it
Starting point is 00:17:14 was against chicago you completely stifled this season so are we going to you know before his injuries uh matthews was third among the four group and shorthanded on ice time per game at 153 matthew nize was fourth at 142 is it time for craig berube to trust the other guys to do that yes and and let those guys score some goals it's time for them to try bloody anything enough like i'm sitting here bashing my head against the wall like okay making trades is hard the waiver wire is hard calling guys up is difficult and whatever and the injury but okay you're pointing out things that okay here's what you have here's how you can just use it a little differently so you use those guys more shorthanded you do a better job shorthanded you're giving up
Starting point is 00:18:10 fewer goals shorthanded that allows Matthews and Nyes to dominate the five on five ice time a little bit more and come out fresh when the penalty's over come out fresh when the penalty's over because that's one thing the Leafs don't even really have now you're just throwing out these you're throwing out three randoms really or it's John Tavares and his band of merry men um they stopped using william nylander on the penalty kill as well um that's probably good it's it is probably good so if we're gonna go this would allow you to throw out a juice line you could do like matthews tavaris willie or you could do nize matthews tavaris willie nice matthews willie matthews nize tavaris if you really freaking wanted yeah you could throw
Starting point is 00:18:56 out all these different options you can split them up so you can have some combination of matthews nize tavaris kneelander cowan you threw it out there and we could maybe throw robertson into that conversation somebody else domey as a winger oh my god um and then that those two lines are what dominates the five on five play while you let these other guys do what they've done their entire careers was been a good player at that that's how they won a cup in vegas lawton there's a reason for years we were like he's gonna be worth a first round pick and then he was um in a in a trade uh lorenz i i'm screaming at them to use him more because in the one opportunity you gave him to show what he can do in a bigger role he thrived try something
Starting point is 00:19:53 anything else because if they actually get everyone back and just go right back to what they were doing, it's going to be a waste of everybody's time. Jesse, last year, the McMahon Domi Robertson line, even though it hemorrhaged a lot of shots and scoring chances, it did score goals. It seems like this year it's not doing that either. Yeah, I don't like that line because I think robertson in particular has afforded himself a chance at playing somewhere better than that yes like when i see domey out there i don't think that is a place for robertson to be and i focus on him because he's the one that's really excelled in this lineup and out of the small victories that the leafs have this year he's one of them they've really found something here in that there's a guy
Starting point is 00:20:41 who wanted out of this city and now he's kind of found a place and he's really only successful when he's playing in a in a top six role that's a high scoring part of the lineup that's like feeding him pucks with skilled players and right now Domi's not that they never have it and they never have the puck yeah and that that line because because I don't think Domi is playing at that level where he can compliment Robertson's game so I don't think that's a useful line at all for Brubé to be deploying Domi can't compliment Domi's game he is not an NHL center stop doing it I'm open to him staying on the team but if they play him one more game at center I'm out like uh they cannot play another moment etc with this team I don't care who's out people keep going
Starting point is 00:21:29 well there's injuries I laid out how you can avoid doing that if you really wanted to um you could have Tavares, Lawton, Lawrence, Quillen. Is that great? No. It's better. For the love of God, it's better. Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them. And that's where TaskRabbit comes in. And I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer
Starting point is 00:22:14 thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the task rabbit app you should download that taskrabbit.ca code
Starting point is 00:22:59 dangle i was disappointed on saturday to see quill and scratch yeah that's somebody who's come up and done his job and been an effective leaf and i think he's brought something different to the lineup and it's really strange to me that he would be the odd man out we can especially because like i know they wanted to get sammy bland because he signed with montreal they waved him you're hoping for like a bit of a revenge game he grew up a habs fan he's gonna have a lot of family there but like we're talking about scratching a center for a winger and a center who's got some speed in puck handling and playmaking ability which they don't have and no disrespect to sammy blay that's not his game that's and that's just not who you take out you know you had to ruin the
Starting point is 00:23:38 opening night lineup because of the center situation um because you're like we need centers and then you're gonna healthy scratch one what are we doing here it might have been even a case of berube just giving a dog a bone in sammy blay and knowing that he's he's not really fighting for his job on every single game you know because like if this game really mattered are you scratching quillen for blay because i don't think anybody's thinking i don't think that makes them better i don't think it makes them better better putting blay in there but he's like okay i might as well give the vet here his hometown thing because we're gonna be have a lost season anyways and i wonder if he sees the writing on the wall it's like i might as well do like the fun stuff and the get
Starting point is 00:24:23 blay in front of montreal instead of trying to like do everything to win every single game so i don't know if that's a hint from him and it's like he's thinking about how lost this season can be i'll give you an easy one uh looking at this lineup you're okay you have that reprehensible second line of joshua domi roberts for anybody listening we have the leaps lineup up it's Nylander, Tavares, Yonkroke, Joshua, Domi, Robertson, McMahon, Lawton, Cowan, Blay, Lorenz, Michelli. There it is. Matthias Michelli on the fourth line.
Starting point is 00:24:56 What are you doing? Playmaking offense only winger. Good bye. Doesn't need to be in the lineup that evening. That frees up. You can put Lorenz on the wing. You have Quillen at center. and you can or if you don't keep bashing your head against the wall with domey at center because you
Starting point is 00:25:16 love it so much you weird weird weird man like here's here's the thing we're all looking for blame and i think you get to last place by everyone being at least a little bit to blame we can conclusively say this season craig berube is doing a very bad job with the toronto may police he's doing a terrible job and that's one of the i think easy decisions you could have made you don't like this player and he's definitely not of use to you on the fourth line what are we doing here that's enough i don't know i mean i mean that kind of speaks to where i wanted to go next because none of the bets that brad for living made have paid off i look at so matthias michelli has had flashes you could see there's talent there but it's not working in this system
Starting point is 00:26:06 uh dakota joshua for me has got to be the biggest disappointment i was singing this guy's praises and i i you know i see him against jack guy you know in garbage time in montreal and like he didn't even really want to engage there's no and and you know i know he's he's leading the team in hits but like what have you seen dakota joshua um take over a shift or impose himself physically truly on another team ever in the leafs jersey and this is where he set up some screens that's really like but no but that's not good enough yeah this guy needs to be a 40 point player he's now tracking to be like a 20 point player but i look at that lineup and i say dakota joshua isn't a second line player like no for for his role there like that's where i'm willing to
Starting point is 00:26:56 uh give the leaf some leeway on the injury thing this lineup is ugly like take away the leaf's logo put canucks you know like take off your least fan blinder thing where you want these guys to succeed you know them deeply and everything if you look at this lineup on paper it lacks so much star power and like really good goal scoring ability that is an ugly ass lineup that shouldn't win nhl games and that's the honest truth about this team that they have to put out there right now because of of the injuries that have happened how poorly they've been playing and like i look at the the marlies who look like they're having a wonderful time like following them on social media is so refreshing and like honestly if you're a hardcore leaf and you should be paying more
Starting point is 00:27:43 attention to them now because they're such they're a way more relative um relevant team than they've been in recent years like last year i don't know what was really the point like other than like the alex nylander stuff which was kind of fun um you know not too many guys are going to get their opportunity if you're in like if you're on the marlies right now the leafs being last in the east is great news like you're cheering for your team to win but at the end of the day numero uno comes first you might get a shot yeah you might get a shot yeah because absolutely like bo grew like we keep talking about will villain of uh on the back end bo grew um has played nhl games played with the ducks he's having a wonderful season uh with the
Starting point is 00:28:32 marlies jacob quillen was was a point of game with them um there they have been battling injuries too like one of the guys who's uh filling my comment sections right now people keep going where's pizzetta where's pizzetta and he's going to be joining the show yeah he's on the show later a little later yes he's on the steve dagle podcast yeah so he actually he's been injured a lot this season he actually just scored his first goal with the marlies because he uh he just came back to the lineup like there's another guy like you know uh if if if with joshua you're just looking for someone who you talk about a guy who never ever ever once took a shift off pesetta i loved him from the moment i saw him play his first preseason game with montreal i'm like that guy's
Starting point is 00:29:16 on the hab so i hate him on principle but he's nuts and he's kind of fun and he managed to turn that into an nhl career use some of these guys because i'm sick of watching the same group over and over yeah I and I don't think you know using Domi at center obviously uh Michele on a fourth line right wing role like what are we doing here um I I mentioned Dakota Joshua he he has the talents it's annoying that you know it's not happening and I'm looking at um you know other guys and I I one guy I do want to shout out because I do think he deserves it is Scott Lawton and i know lee fans don't want to hear it but he is uh chicken soup for the soul that guy he has been awesome yeah and he was he was ruining it up a little bit at the end of that game and
Starting point is 00:30:03 not every habs fan liked it good i don't get be dirty be reprehensible on the ice yeah like you play for my team like everyone else does it go go ahead yeah third man in all that shit i don't care sorry no i just think he's he's part of the solution uh so when we talk about like i'm already seeing like deadline trade proposals or whatever i'd be like scott lund's a guy i'm keeping yeah beliefs are truly stepping back and there are trading guys like carlo and you know cj said riley's names out there and you know some of these other guys scott lund to me is a maple leaf beyond this season for sure and you need that listen yeah you need centerman uh they just spent a first round pick to get a centerman and i know everybody's upset like we don't know what nikita
Starting point is 00:30:49 grabenkin's gonna be and we don't know what that first round picks a healthy scratch apparently yeah like like which i disagree with well whatever but scott lotten along with nick waugh and austin matthews and john tavaris that's not bad up the center there's something there and this is the key right the the frustrating thing with the toronto maple leafs this year is like if they're healthy there's enough talent in that lineup to do kind of whatever they want but when you have um net negative guys and i and i think specifically look at the difference in the leafs lineup with troy stetcher versus philip myers troy stetcher has went won all his minutes won all his shifts and troy stetcher couldn't get into the lineup in edmonton could not get
Starting point is 00:31:31 into the lineup it's bad and bad man and i'm thinking about like okay so none of these depth guys are working none of them and you said last night steve something really really interesting that i think we should go back to we always said dubas doesn't doesn't know how to make a defense core and i think we're bang the fuck on he doesn't brad doesn't seem to know what to do with forwards no uh all the all the bets haven't paid off like all of them all of them michelle joshua i still i'm holding on to hope there's something there um lotten was that was obviously good but he wasn't exactly a bet that's a very established good uh nhl player um and even camp should be a leaf currently oh we need a center you could have had yarn croak
Starting point is 00:32:23 as the guy who ends up going down to the marlies and you could have had camp you you had time and you had wiggle room at the beginning of the season to have camp in the lineup to fill in for fourth line center especially because yarn croak went down after three games yes he was injured he had a good start he had three goals and then he got injured immediately yeah but like yeah we know we know where that's going yeah yeah like oh yeah maybe he's gonna score 30 no right um and now he's now he's up on the top line and it's a waste of everyone's time it's a waste of his time too um but that so that's true living but again you don't get to last place by accident like that decision doesn't get made without the coach and it from the beginning of
Starting point is 00:33:22 the season never made sense that david camp uh wasn't in the line i asked jesse and steve last night you know what the biggest issue is is it coaching or is it jamming and it's interesting because they you ask anybody that question they're going to give you a different answer jesse's answer was really good steve said coach jesse said gm there is i mean freach said it today i think chris has mentioned it on the on the cj show as well there's no trading your way out of this guys there is no trading like oh man here's a bunch of guys that haven't worked in toronto i'm sure they've got a ton of trade value though it's the worst person in your fantasy hockey or football pool who's like hey here's three garbage pieces for your one star and they send
Starting point is 00:34:02 you those trade proposals and you got to turn it down like that's what the leafs have to work with it's a bunch of magic beans and you're like okay what can we send out all of these pieces and they equal one good guy and it's like that's not how reality works no there isn't like a big move they can make just by swapping a bunch of their garbage but i'd like to see them freaking try and i think every moment your gm anyone's gm anyone listening to this any moment your gm spends not trying to communicate with barry trotz right now is wage theft um that guy like that quote that came out today where he's like oh we're getting into that oh yeah we're bringing it up don't worry it's dropping f-bombs and and stuff like that guy is you know we we talked about brad true living and
Starting point is 00:34:48 and how you know he's like well we're not really looking to trades right now and how i don't believe him because well that's that's objectively not true it's not we know that's not true and i and i also don't believe him because i fundamentally don't believe anything the toronto make-believe say um they have broken their trust with the fans uh because of how they're dealing with all this injury stuff they're smarter than you they're better than you you're they're above you and you're the unwashed right so he's also when he responds to questions like that he will always say i will do anything that will make the team better you know when like you'll be asked directly hey are you looking at moving these pieces of your lineup and he says
Starting point is 00:35:26 no but anything that comes afloat that will make my team better we will make those moves so it's not that he doesn't deny oh i'm covering my eyes and i'm not looking at any trades he's he's saying no but right you know if there's a trade i'll make it but but what i've said to that is well of course he's saying that because it doesn't benefit him to be like i'm looking to make a move now because it takes away all your leverage barry trotz is doing the exact opposite he's not good at this yeah hey can someone freaking call me right now so i can man you gotta call him every day you got to call him every damn day and figure it out i said like i'm not saying nashville is the only team you can make a deal with but come on i said this last week but when they are in these
Starting point is 00:36:15 scrums and they're doing their press conferences nobody in the nhl is under oath they are not obligated to be honest to you if they want to lie they can and it is unfortunate that they do mark bergevin at every turn and they take the opportunity to lie because they are afforded the ability to lie because they don't have to tell the truth so that's the reality of the situation here's what jonah siegel said about that this morning and obviously on friday show we did like half an hour on the leafs and their bullshit way of handling uh timelines for injuries like montreal new hook uh four months doc oh no docs four months new hooks six to eight weeks they put a time whatever it is they give you a timeline yeah uh jonah starts it with this this is point
Starting point is 00:36:55 four of his monday morning sort of thing uh as an organization the leafs should be doing everything they can right now to build trust as much as possible with their fan base the team's current policy of injury disclosure isn't helping with that. The Leafs haven't disclosed what injuries Matthews, Tanev, Stallers, Carlo, or Nick Waugh are dealing with. Marshall Refai is in there too, and he was skating today. Or how they suffered them, or when they're expected to return. In the case of Stallers, the team initially said the goalie was fine and might even play the next game. He wasn't seen on the ice for the next 12 days and counting, and that counts today, by the way. Berube later said the injury was worse than the team initially thought.
Starting point is 00:37:30 In a similar vein, Berube said Matthews might return in under a week in the aftermath of his undisclosed ailment. It'll be at least two weeks if he returns versus Columbus on Wednesday night and probably longer given how limited he looked on Saturday's morning skate in Montreal. And obviously I started this segment with the injury updates. Stollers is a what they said he was. He might play the next game. Now they're saying, well, he's a ways away. I'm moving forward under the assumption he doesn't play again this season. And I'm not kidding. I think it's probably a bad injury. And I was worried about those ice knees, man. I know that's probably nothing, but I was really worried about that. Typically, Jonah says, typically Berube will say he doesn't know when players will return. Is this the training staff telling him that they have no idea when he'll be back?
Starting point is 00:38:12 Seems unlikely. And he's probably right about that. In comparison, the Canadians, obviously, I gave you the Canadians thing. And the last part I want to say is the Leafs can't fix everything all at once, but they can fix this. Does Steve Dangle get a byline on that article? He should. I'm glad Jonah said it.
Starting point is 00:38:31 I'm glad we're not the only ones saying it, right? So we're not yelling into the void. And I think, Steve, you said it in the LFR on Saturday night as well. I think we will continue to hammer this until they change it. We're not going to do a half an hour segment on it, but every single time now,
Starting point is 00:38:49 every single time somebody goes down, i'm making note of what they say i'm and you should watch you should watch you should be looking at that you should be paying attention to that you should be keeping track of that i mean maybe you don't need to keep track of that maybe you've got a life but i don't and uh i feel like it's worth you have you're like emails to get back to like mary and accounting's waiting for your reply reply to her first we'll take your up we'll take your outrage though yeah our job Before you track Leafs injury status, go answer your email. All right, here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:39:21 Not everyone can keep up with this shit. That's our job. But if you listen to a show. Let us do our job. If you listen to a show a couple times a week, and ideally that show tells you what's going on. Yeah. But we're getting on here every show going,
Starting point is 00:39:34 oh, fucking, because we don't know. Because they won't tell it. The captain of the Leafs, the second highest paid player in the NHL, a guy with 260 goal seasons on his career he's scoring at a better clip than alexander ovechkin we don't know where the fuck uh when when he's coming back and let me pause it a theory to you guys if he comes back and he plays like he was playing before the yes before that to me will be like i'm still willing to and jesse i was agreeing with you like we've seen enough here they're probably going to be at best a wildcard team at best yeah but if he comes back and he starts
Starting point is 00:40:14 playing the same way he was playing before he went down nail in coffin season over yeah it's it's just you just you need your star players to be star players maybe they squeak in maybe good like even matthew's the way he was playing the standard is very very high for him like he's still a very good player uh yeah no i don't very useful i know adam i know how many goals nine nine i think nine does he have nine that's actually higher than i thought well because he started to play much better oh yeah and then he got hurt but he's still not a point of game no he's not all right that's good no you're right he's still a very good player offensively and he's underratedly useful defensively that's not exactly what you pay him for but it could be with all the other parts
Starting point is 00:41:04 good enough to get you into a playoff spot before you have your bottoms padded by whoever you play in the first round but maybe boston yeah maybe even boston who wins the division for god's sake um it could get you there but uh i am it is the number one thing dominating leafs discourse right now it's austin matthews and sometimes i get confused by that because i'm like well he's not playing like you as bad as they've been like people are still like you know what i'm sick of austin or like whatever happened to austin and i'm like guys he hasn't played for like two weeks like this isn't on him he hasn't people want to know where the captain is this is a league
Starting point is 00:41:57 superstar he is a star he's one of the most important players to ever play for this team definitely over the last quarter century and we have no idea when he's coming back berube said something today that is the closest we've come to getting an answer from him in a long time which is i'll i'll know tomorrow if he's playing wednesday will we know like if jesse's down there talking to talking to craig berube uh if they haven't assuming they haven't left like jesse if berube knows tomorrow by the time you are able to talk to him do you think he will answer that question probably not the for wednesday's game uh yeah probably probably not maybe i don't know it's that's it's a toss-up right it's like who knows
Starting point is 00:42:53 what he's going to want to reveal in that moment or not all right i don't like i don't have an answer for you because they can just do whatever they want in that moment and you know so they're going on this road trip and you know one of the things they i know the road games but one of the things they say about leafs nation is how well traveled they are i want to know who the hell's playing i and you know we you talked more and more jesse about how incrementally each home game you go to there are fewer fans there totally like people are just going to start well hey thankfully for the next few games they won't have to know they won't know from you know from a league perspective yeah i would love for betman or someone at the nhl to be like guys this isn't
Starting point is 00:43:43 good enough but you know the leafs can run their team any way they want and you know one of the things we said all summer long is you know keith pelly and this team they're gonna they're they're trying to bring fans back in i've never felt more alienated like i they're not only are they bad but i don't know what's going on and when i don't know what's going on all i have are the results in front of me and they suck so your product is you suck beginning middle end that's it yeah well i'll keep my money to myself then well haven't you watched many years of leafs hockey that's kind of their brand yeah but there are teams who who uh like you you can sell what you're doing like the generals for example i know it's different but no one was in a foul mood about the fact that
Starting point is 00:44:42 they're last place in their division yesterday because everyone understands the game they play a really competitive game they're young they're hungry uh they contended they wanted to contend for the memorial cup last year um and basically half the roster uh graduated to pro hockey um that's what happens um there are plenty of teams in the nhl where you can sell what you're doing you can't sell what the leafs are doing right now your perspective for the last what is it nine years ten years of lfr has been kind of in one direction right now and i think it's fascinating that this is the first time in the history of lfr where you've ever experienced to come down from a team that's been really yeah because they were just bad at the beginning they
Starting point is 00:45:36 were bad they went from like a just outside of the playoff team down to a fully rebuilding team but that was a relief we all wanted exactly so so yeah at the beginning they were bad and then they do things like in 2013 where it's like whoa they made the playoffs and look this magical run they flame out we all know what happened and then they bought them out and that's excitement because you want them to bottom out and then they bottom out and they do it exceptionally well and that leads to nine years of success and now this is the first time in your 20 years of doing this you got to experience expectations being high and them falling short so this whole thing is new to you and the way you're reacting to this season as a whole and i think there needs to be a finding the
Starting point is 00:46:22 balance of getting used to a team that is underperforming and then rejigging your expectations on the team and leaving the expectations of the nine years in the past and getting to the new ones of whether it's the retool or whether it's the bottoming out again whether it's that we're going to be good again next year or just moving the piece of the lineup that's where we need to get to because we can't keep running back to you're not who you were last year i know because that runs out of steam and you can't be yelling that forever so this is why i'm starting to when was the last time i brought up beau grew you know what i mean like there's a guy who the leaf signed this off season be one of their extra centers uh will villanoff like we've been banging
Starting point is 00:47:09 that drum for over a week you know all these young guys you know like do we do cow and watch uh we spent a decent portion of the show going jacob quillen should have been in the lineup most leaf fans were like why was he the one to come out everyone's enjoyed his game so we're adjusting in that way but you're selling wins or you're selling hope and right now the leafs are selling neither yes and also if they are heading into a certain direction like oh we're gonna try to get better now or we're going to try to get better later it they haven't let us know so i'm sitting here completely frustrated because it every game just feels like a death march to the next game yes and you can't sell that like and where i'll give the leafs management i guess
Starting point is 00:48:10 Bradshaw Living, the leeway on that one is you can't make that decision in late October. You can't make that decision in early November. Even late November is a little soon to make that complete decision. So they just have to be so much more patient than we are as fans. We kind of know where we're going and things, but you can't make those decisions because if they went on a winning streak out of that blues game things are completely different and they didn't and they're give they're showing them what they are but they have to be more patient than we are i i agree like listen the multi-billion dollar teams executives who are millionaires need to be better than me yeah for sure yeah um i think that i will bring you that i think that needs to be said yes you
Starting point is 00:49:03 know when you put it that way um the leafs um have poisoned the word patience that word means nothing when it comes to the toronto maple leafs because for years we're like hey so i know they're winning a lot of regular season games maybe change it up and they said we're gonna be patient we're gonna be patient hey you should probably trade this guy before his no move kicks it we're gonna be patient oh okay hey you lost again i don't know if you noticed that we're gonna be patient okay well now he's walking for nothing and now they're not even regular season good and now you're still telling me to be patient yes but that is still fan brain because you're attaching the what a thirty uh nine years of leafs hockey oh whoa whoa whoa 37 how dare you
Starting point is 00:50:05 45 years of leaf hockey that you've watched absolutely tivoli not you're you're attaching it to this year and bradshaw living isn't thinking about the mitch marner negotiations and how they went in 2015 and attaching that to the way this is going this year and i think that's the right way for him to go about it but your perspective is also valid in that you've seen these things before you've seen the dark times but from his view of things he can't react on that so here's what the leafs uh don't the current leafs don't necessarily inherit everything that's happened since 1967 but when you take this job you know what you do inherit um the fans and they're miserable and uh why should they be stoked like right now you're selling hope or you're selling
Starting point is 00:50:59 wins and they're selling neither and before the season i was like you know what ah you know maybe they don't win as many games but they're gonna be scrappy and games should still be fun and they're going to do some fun social media stuff you know what's really difficult to sell um quirky hot dogs when you're in last place in the eastern conference and every like those guys work so hard and i'm not criticizing them um but it's really difficult to do the fun act when all you're doing is losing no one has any idea what's going on and you're not even playing competitively And it matters that you got your asses kicked on Saturday night by the Habs. And so you try to do the fun stuff and everyone's like, shut up.
Starting point is 00:51:48 The word patience is poisoned to me because like, I don't care who is at the helm. I don't. They sat there for years at the blackjack table, like 13 hit me, 15 hit me, 19 hit me. 23 bust hit me and like yeah guys but that gets back to what i was talking about earlier where you have the nine years of success and the really dark part of that is the zero playoff success to show for it all of this that's happening right now is so much different if you had a ring in there or if you had a really deep run a third round you don't yeah and you don't unfortunately And I don't know how much Bradshaw Living can wear that, but the fans are coming from that perspective where this is so much more frustrating a year for a fan because that was the window.
Starting point is 00:52:51 The window was the last nine years and there's nothing to show for it. So it's even more depressing that this year is a step back retool year because there is no success. and at some point you move on with your day like we're having this long discussion here and it's starting to feel like it's going in circles a little bit um so for us we move on to another topic or we move on to a different team or whatever whatever's going on for the uh voting public uh who vote with their dollars keep that shit in your pocket yeah raptors are doing really well raptors are doing great hey it goes to the same place it does go to the same place isn't that great you know that's so good cancel your cell phones stop watching television yeah it's
Starting point is 00:53:40 all going the same place the old boss they originally when you want to vote with your daughter dollars in uh canada you really can't because you need the five companies that run the entire country rogers rogers really has contributed to the terence and phillip occasion of this country uh where there are two companies in this country hey have you ever wanted to be a sexy man every morning well jesse what about you you ever want to be all the time well i'm in for it it's too bad you're not wearing your true classic t-shirts today and i am because i'm the sexy man is steve allowed to be sexy at his ripe age of 39 yes he is i need you to knock that off for you know what even at 47 he will be a sexy man because he'll be wearing true which is in 10 years
Starting point is 00:54:26 uh 25 million shirts sold to 5 million customers steve jesse and i are three of those customers and steve being the oldest among us which he is yeah objectively is by a month and a day uncle steve uncle's uncle shop steve looks great in true classic and by the way nearly 40 steve it's uh true classic is the perfect gift this holiday season whether you're shopping for your dad steve your brother who's older steve or your partner who's old steve or uh and listen true classic sell new friends the great thing about it is there's no bunching of fabric
Starting point is 00:55:00 it's just clean effortless fits for real life so skip the guesswork and the overpriced designer stuff give comfort confidence and true classic a shot you can find them at Amazon Target Costco and Sam's Club or head to true classic dot com and the promo code is
Starting point is 00:55:17 are you ready dangle a perfect gift for everyone on your list I thought this promo code was old promo code should be not39 it's it's dangle when you're a mid-sized business you need every competitive advantage you can get like an ai solution that works for you not against you sap grow is built with ai embedded at its core working across every system and it's ready to go from day one so you can hit the ground running bring it with sap grow ai cloud erp for any size business another team struggling like the leafs um it's crazy you know like we had
Starting point is 00:55:59 brad for living talking last week we got don maloney from calgary you gotta get back into your mic uh don maloney from calgary and and barry trotz uh from nashville uh talking this week and i we have to go through both interviews but um barry trotz the quote that's really hitting everybody from the tennessee and is i need more fucking from them not i need more fucking from them i need more fucking from them fucking from them it doesn't read great no but i don't he's not out there like fuck more uh he's he's more like i need i think what he if he were to say it in a more calm way he'd be like i need more uh whatever it is they bring from them and he said the confusing thing the frustrating thing for everyone is that we just don't score you look
Starting point is 00:56:49 names on our roster who should score more because we have Philip Forsberg and Stephen Stamkos and Jonathan Marcheseau and we all think we're going to score here's the problem none of them are centers I was about to say who's feeding them the puck who's feeding them the puck yeah taking care of the 200 foot game hey as a team that uh doesn't uh doesn't have a lot of center depth right now I can tell you it's difficult for wingers to score if there's no center driving the line and they haven't had it for two years uh Trott says I'm watching the game systematically I know who makes mistakes when the pucks on someone stick they pass it right to the other team and that is not andrew brunette's fault and he's gonna hang on to andrew brunette he said our next few weeks across
Starting point is 00:57:24 the league someone's getting fired you're going to see that it's just going to happen and what you're going to hear out of every effing player is oh man we just underperformed he was a really good coach we've just got to be better and it takes everybody off the hook they go well it was him not us and so trot says you know what i did a couple years ago what sorry what did i do a couple years ago when they weren't playing well what did i do and then he answers his own question he said uh i i said you're not effing going to see effing you too then it became the little f you tour instead of you too and it got them to say screw you and of course they did go on an 18 game point streak and he said there's a really good group in that locker room i just need more from
Starting point is 00:58:09 them and so you know uh listen you know what's hilarious about this you know you think the least nearly everything you said step back year whatever we could be nashville and we could be in we knew we didn't think nashville was going to be good when they went on that streak and squeaked into the playoffs they're both bad by x they were supposed to be not good that season and then progressively get better what happened was they surprised people and then they thought they were better than they were and then made a bunch of free agent signings brady shade jonathan marsh so steven stamkos and then and and also ryan o'reilly the season before and and they're just in a holding pattern and they're and they're like hey one of our prime assets is our number one
Starting point is 00:58:53 center and we're only going to trade him to a place that he wants to go if we trade him i think uh what that interview is essentially is the news showing up to report on an arson and they're interviewing a man who happened to be walking down the street with a can full of gas and a handful of matches going man we got to get to the bottom of this uh you laid it out it was a team that shouldn't have been doubled down on and it was doubled i think triple they believe their own streak which is not that was not them ownership and uh david poyle yeah believed in barry trotz because barry trotz for a quarter century or more uh earn their faith that he knows what he's doing yes coaches are not gms gms are not coaches
Starting point is 00:59:53 this coach who is a hall of fame coach cannot gm and if you're the owner you got to be like this guy who gave me lots of years of great service as a coach has spent all of my money in awful ways stamkos was an abject failure of a contract marches so oof my own brady shea gag me with a spoon oh no the askarov trade looks abysmal he's one of the best goalies in the nhl right now i think he's still 25 ish two million dollars two two million dollars i don't care what you got from them it's not yaroslav askarov you're getting killed here this guy shouldn't have his job a moment longer he's the worst gm in hockey bar none yeah yep and this is a very respected hockey mind like i said hall of fame coach you would hire him as a coach in a second oh my god
Starting point is 01:01:02 like i he's already been asked about it like if brunette were to get fired would he take over and he said no it's not even the worst idea i've heard you know what is the worst idea i've heard him today's monday him being gm tuesday that's the worst idea that i've heard he's the worst in the nhl and there are some bad ones um he's not good at this he hasn't been good at this there's no evidence to suggest he will be good at this that's enough can i lay it out a little simpler i think that's i think that's fair now i or barry now uh compare and contrast that with... Just on Barry Trotz.
Starting point is 01:01:43 Oh, no, we're going to stay on Barry Trotz. I wanted to bring Maloney in, but go ahead, and then we'll... No, go ahead. Well, okay, so the thing that stuck out with me with the Maloney thing, and I think these are two franchises that are not run the best,
Starting point is 01:01:56 and I think Barry's case is it's Barry. Calgary's case is it's an owner who is telling Don Maloney to do what he wants him to do. And, you know, the article with Eric Francis on Sportsnet starts with, Well, we need more Nazem Qadri's, not less when it comes to trading him. So, Jesse, when you talk about like Barry, what were you going to say about Barry Trotz?
Starting point is 01:02:18 Because this is a these are two teams that are so effing stubborn. They're bad and they're stubborn, which is a lethal combination. What do you think it's going to take for a guy like Barry to make some moves? Or what's it going to take for a guy like, you know, in Nashville to like their ownership to go? OK, Barry's not the guy. yeah they should have they should have never hired him as a general manager i think steve does you does a great job pointing out that like he's a fantastic head coach yep and he had no gma experience and because you know how to coach a team to success doesn't mean you know
Starting point is 01:02:52 how to make player transactions right and you look back on barry trotz's history as a head coach and i think it fine it leads to a interesting point that alludes to what you're talking about there adam about stubbornness barry trotz has a championship he has he has a ring it's it's with the washington capitals and on there forever etched in the stanley cup will be his name yep after he won the stanley cup he got into a contract dispute with ted leone's they were going through it all season long and at the very end he lifts the stanley cup still with no contract for the following season and he stubbornly said i know what i'm worth i don't want to coach here anymore unless I get this number. And I think that's kind of how he's always been. And that
Starting point is 01:03:38 probably works really well as a head coach. But when you bring that attitude to a general manager and you put him in that position, it probably leads to situations where I'm going to double down on this roster that completely overperformed expectations and get all these old guys and make ourselves good now and then not being able to admit that you are no longer that team i believe barry thinks that team's gonna be good very soon and things are gonna turn around because he is stubborn in his ways and he's gonna move guys like ask her off and bring in to the stamp coast marshals of the world and keep training guys who's the guy they sent to montreal who's been will carry it who like turned around or will carry or alex carry alex i always get them
Starting point is 01:04:22 yeah like the week he got there he's like oh this is great and he's fit in perfectly in montreal he's gonna keep doing those things because he's stubborn and he's stubborn in the way he runs the the nashville predators and it's depressing to watch outside looking in for nashville predators i'm looking it up right now because i remember doing a video around the trade deadline one of a million videos that we did around the trade deadline because there is no trade deadline anymore it's trade deadline month 10 days like at least yeah here it is like what even is this i remember doing the video and being like what is this um michael bunting was traded from pittsburgh with a fourth round pick in 2026 to nashville for tommy novak and luke shen
Starting point is 01:05:08 what is that what yeah that's deck chairs on the nobody should be making that move unless this is nhl 26 no and then you know what kyle dubas did is kyle dubas took luke shen yeah and he was traded from the pittsburgh penguins to winnipeg for a second round pick in the 2026 draft and a fourth round pick in 2027 he did not play a game for the pittsburgh penguins so is that barry trotz giving up a second and a fourth to get michael bunting yes basically because like if you had just traded luke shen yourself yep to winnipeg and i think what do you what go through all of various transactions there hasn't been a hit and adam with don maloney i think it's the same thing where you got two people who are stubborn in their ways and calgary's got that new arena coming
Starting point is 01:06:03 and they don't want to stink you know he's like no we have enough here i'm gonna keep pushing this lineup or we're going to be decent enough for this new arena and calgary is always going to be in contention when like two years ago they should have realized we are not what we can be like the hubert or thing and that big moves haven't worked out yep we need to really bottom out and retool and i think stubbornness is preventing them from they have an all-world goalie yeah right they have an all-world goalie devin cooley's even having a great year uh and rasmus anderson had a great week i think he was number one in all of fantasy last week he was on my bench damn it um and and you know you've got there are pieces there if like here's the crazy
Starting point is 01:06:45 thing if cowrie offered rasmus anderson an eight-year contract he would stay they already know that sure um don maloney talks about like it's sort of frustrating reading the interview to be honest with you because he's flames fans hated it it's it's the reaction was visceral it feels it feels gaslighting it is it is and i i don't like i listen i like i you know i have a soft spot for the flames i lived in calgary the flames were the first team i ever saw live with rick tabarachi and net uh uh you know my grandfather was a season ticket holder for 25 years in calgary and i the way this team is run it feels like the new version of the ballard leafs it's i'm gonna hire i'm gonna hire a guy that just says yes sir and wherever i am in the world
Starting point is 01:07:34 he's gonna run stuff like like jesse you talk about the new arena in calgary which is desperately needed i'm glad they're getting it and it's so great that the public gets to fund it i was about to say what what are the calgary flames give a shit how they look when they get to that new arena know they didn't pay for it right well I mean I think Nazem Qadri is going to be like 38 so you need more Nazem Qadri's or do you need a guy who could be the next Nazem Qadri Don like this is this is what kills me Nazem Qadri could get you the next Nazem Qadri plus and he could be a part of what this group you know you got Matt Faye Gridden you've got Zayn Parekh Matt Coronado you've got uh dustin wolf you've got so many pieces here where you're like yeah connor you
Starting point is 01:08:21 you've got pieces here that could be really something i'm not i gotta tell you the one thing that that no one's talking about i really want to talk about this um sports then asked him about ryan huska and here i want to tell you what he said and i want if you're ryan huska are you feeling good about this he said i think ryan's an excellent coach i think it's been a very difficult time for him and his staff i think he's got a good feel for how we have to play but at the end of the day where we are uh we are where we are in the standings ultimately the control of the coach controls that as well there are areas of our game that we know we have to improve and make some changes like our power play ultimately that is a coach we have no intention of thinking there is a
Starting point is 01:09:03 need to rejig our coaching staff at all ryan is a good coach for this team and he needs to continue to work to get more out of what we have listen if i'm ryan huska that means i'm done at the end of the season that's what that looks like to me or it's it's trending that way and i don't even know if it's ryan huska's fault like this is a team it's a bad team dude oh we need more out of our power play buddy you're fucking what are you 29th yeah you can't score last year the calgary flames were in the worst possible position you can be as a pro sports franchise they finished 15th in league standings and missed the playoffs that is nothing you are in purgatory just spinning around doing nothing with your franchise you are not going in a winning direction and you are not
Starting point is 01:09:47 thinking enough to get good in the future and they just want to be that yeah they want to just be middling and it's a disaster if you're a fan of this team because that's going to result into a bunch of nothing for many years to come it's two canadian teams doing things wrong the opposite way um the leafs don't have the trust of their fans right now because they don't tell us anything we can't handle it steve yeah well because we can't handle it because crazy lunatics and the calgary flames uh fans don't trust their fans because it's the ministry of propaganda like it's baghdad bob in a friggin red and yellow jersey everything oh my god the pound for pound bullshit that the Calgary flames pour into hockey discourse
Starting point is 01:10:42 cannot be contended with. Holy shit for the size of the market and the barrels full of bullshit that they pour in for, this is like three or four straight years now where I'm like, hot damn, the calgary flames punch above their weight when it comes to we're in on this we're in on this we're doing this we're doing that and nothing ever happens it i'm exhausted by the team i really mad flames fans must be exhausted oh my you gotta be yeah you gotta be and like i the people i feel
Starting point is 01:11:18 worst for are the people who will buy into the bullshit well i don't know that there's a lot of them left there are i look at i look i think flames fans are way smarter than that i look let me let me just what's so fucking crazy too is they actually get into this pedantic argument about retooling versus rebuilding and why he's like well i think it's a more accurate statement to say that we're retooling a blah blah like dude what are you i think it's more accurate statement to say your team sucks how about that let me tell you that let me show you this like okay in the division in the pacific division there has not over the last 10 years i don't think been a division with more bottom out teams than the pacific and it starts with the edmonton
Starting point is 01:12:00 oilers when they got mcdavid and dry sidle and a few other guys right and oscar clefbaum was in there unfortunately his career's cut short darnell nurse is in there um and they have been to two straight stanley cups as of now not a great start to the season but you know that's edmonton that's yeah uh the san jose sharks who have been in the doldrums for four or five years because of the awful contracts that Doug Wilson signed guys to that he probably shouldn't have they had a chance to probably offload some of those veterans and retool and continue to be good but they didn't but look at that now they've sort of popped Celebrini Will Smith Will Eklund Asgroves had an incredible November we're going to talk about him later in the show uh the Vegas Golden Knights
Starting point is 01:12:40 started from literally nothing so I don't I don't think you'll count that as a bottom up but at very least they were a fucking they had zero points literally zero points the season before they started they figured out a fleece i don't know i don't know but here's the thing vegas could have fucked that that fantasy or that fantasy draft it really was they could have they could have messed it up but everyone thought they were going to be back and they nailed it they freaking nailed it and then the anaheim ducks too all of those teams uh well exception of vegas i guess who never went down they they went down and they came back up calgary couldn't have better examples of teams and here's the other part the teams that have not gone all the way down they've got a team
Starting point is 01:13:21 in that division that did not nail the expansion draft in the seattle kraken okay they've got a team like the la kings that have had some down years but mostly been in the middle and they get the show ran by edmonton four years in a row yeah i give them the vancouver canucks who were always talented and always underperform and refuse to bottom out i mean listen vancouver is so crazy vancouver has center issues two years ago they had peterson horvat and jt miller man what did they get man what did they get for those guys like it's great and so calgary has in its division the people that they play the most every example of what to do and every example of what not to do and they're choosing the you know what i choose not to and you know what's crazy is
Starting point is 01:14:13 they're so bad anyway it might not even matter yeah they might get gavin mckenna regardless oh my god they might just luck into a rebuild horvat was atu ratu anthony bovillier and uh the 17th overall pick in 2023 i don't even know who that is but uh it's axel sandin palika so they obviously flipped that trade uh that's that's for horonic they traded that pick for horonic you're right you're right okay well yeah who has worked out horonix been good yeah yeah but bo horvat's pretty legit man yeah that guy's got 14 goals yeah damn dude i'm just saying listen commit to this and yeah you do need more nasm cadres you need a 22 23 year old nasm cadre not a 35 year old nasm cadre and there's no acknowledgement of like do you see how easy that is all you have to do is
Starting point is 01:15:00 just say you know what we're in a transition period we want to be on the come up when the new arena starts and we're we're in for a little bit of pain but we're going to get through this That's all all Don Maloney had to do. But instead, he's like, you guys are dumb and silly. And how about you listen to the smart guy? We need more Nazem Kadri's implies anyone is saying Nazem Kadri is not good. Which is no one has said that for a very long time. You know what the Oilers said?
Starting point is 01:15:25 We need more Wayne Gretzky's. But you don't need an almost 60 year old Wayne Gretzky. Right. You need this year is Wayne Gretzky. And they got him. They should sign him. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 01:15:34 How much does Wayne play? I'd love to know. hockey i don't think he plays at all yeah because michael jordan did a thing with nbc and he talked about how he hadn't picked up a basketball in years like literally just hadn't dribbled the basketball and he took a free throw at some dude's like fancy mansion or whatever and i wonder if wayne's out there skating at any moment you think have a very famously i think retired and then never put on a pair of skates yeah do you think it would be annoying because you were playing at such a high level for a while and then you go back and you play and you're like not at that level
Starting point is 01:16:04 you get upset at your mind and body that you can't do those things that i would i would think that'd be me yeah i'd love if somebody on like the tnt panel could ask him or something that'd be fascinating wait you play beer league i know not even beer like just like do you skate around with like maybe like your grandkids yeah you know i know i know lindros plays with a bunch of alumni um i'm pretty sure every week and regularly yeah i would love to see that shit oh yeah i would love to see that shit just sit in on shinny between these guys who are trying two percent and still probably the best players you've ever seen oh yeah yeah yeah being out there with lindros during the rachel's raiders attorney uh there like it's unbelievable the things he can do that are so
Starting point is 01:16:51 effortless even at like his age it's unbelievable if i ever collided with him by accident i'd never be the same like he's he's he's a marvel to see out there it's it's it's frustrating to see barry frustrated because barry is the architect of his frustration in calgary i really feel for flames fans because this is a team that like five years ago was amazing and so chock full of talent and uh i just you know i do think they have a future like i don't i don't doubt the players that they have i don't think a rebuild would even take that long well i think they're all i think they're almost there but i do think bottoming out this year is a good idea and go get like if brock nelson got callum richie for the islanders what do you think nazem cadre gets at this deadline guys
Starting point is 01:17:40 how much do you blame calgary's current situation on the toronto maple leafs general manager what because they won't do business with toronto maple leaf no on how he handled his tenure i mean the end of it definitely some he's got to own part of it right yeah he's got to own part of it but uh the reason he's not there anymore uh is not because he was fired that guy take said take your job and shove it and it's because he stopped being the gm because they wouldn't let him do the shit that he wanted so i didn't hire his own coach wouldn't let him take it like nothing yeah and that that to a degree is like every jam's fate is you have to deal with ownership and um like ownership's a problem there man um but at the end of the day brad was the one ultimately running the
Starting point is 01:18:26 day-to-day and making decisions and he did a good job in that he gave them some pretty good seasons but he didn't leave them in a very good spot on his way out at all it's holiday buying season and we want to buy stuff that they're not going to return don't we yes yeah we do and that's why you should try jenny bird it's a bit of a hack um jenny bird jenny bird i love birds no well yeah we know that but this is jewelry oh and it's and it's a gift hack because it's a gift they're going to absolutely love uh the designs are modern they're timeless instantly levels up your game trust me she will love it and uh you'll look like you put weight in way more effort than you did and i like to guarantee it won't be taken back by sending them the link to the website and saying
Starting point is 01:19:12 what would you like i will purchase it and put it under the christmas tree i don't think the guesswork is always 100 the way you should go and just surprise them with the jewelry especially with jewelry let them pick it out and then you buy it go to jenny bird's website and then put it under the tree or we could be stubborn about it and just pick one no uh don't jenny bird can't solve your stubbornness but it can solve your gift buying issues go to jenny-bird.ca and the code is DANGLE. Starting point is 01:20:12 Conditions apply. Visit scotiabank.com slash H-I-S-A to learn more. Scotiabank. You're richer than you think. I want to talk about, too. So Mikko Rantanen was booted out of another game, this time for hitting Matt Coronado of the Flames. Yes. And he was automatically suspended. And I didn't even know that was a rule, by the way. I've never seen that.
Starting point is 01:20:36 Um, so, uh, it was the second game misconduct penalty that Rantanen had incurred in the last week. Uh, and you, he did not receive a suspension on that play, but according to the department of player safety, any player who incurs two game misconduct penalties before playing 41 consecutive regular season games, uh, without such a penalty shall be suspended automatically for the next game. so the department of player safety here's how little they've done this year um there has been one suspension handed out by the department of player safety and that was to um on the islanders alan's clients his name is jonathan drew and really yeah jonathan drew and the only suspension handed out by the department of player safety this entire season um there's this one automatic suspension to Miko Rantanen two fines for embellishment one of them going to Rantanen so there have been twice as many fines for embellishment as there have been suspensions
Starting point is 01:21:41 and you don't get fined for embellishment until it's actually your second embellishment infraction which means there have been a minimum of four warnings from the department of player safety for embellishments one suspension handed out and one automatic suspension mm-hmm and george peros is friggin just flying around the continent eating popcorn and scrolling his phone that dude's not doing a job and you're not counting the jj moser uh suspension uh for two games for boarding because that happened pre-season game and there was also the scott salbrin uh one that happened the preseason game and then there's the the other fines as well right yeah yeah uh there yeah there have been a few fines yeah um but yeah there's the the this
Starting point is 01:22:33 fechnikov elbow which is like one of the craziest elbows i can think of in recent memory i'm pretty sure that wasn't even a fine um that finds if you want them brendan dylan uh on bertuzzi the boarding malkin was fine for the slashing on logan stanley marshand unsportsmanlike in the buffalo game jackson blake was fine for slashing against truba myers was fine for slashing against mcdavid and ian cole dangerous trip against stamkos those aren't a thing there's fines are they're so minuscule they're not like do players even appeal those no it's not it's literally not worth their time and like you know we we heard with with the florida panthers bill zito being like oh yeah we'd have team dinners and and he'd pick up the tab for
Starting point is 01:23:30 everyone like you can't just have a player get fined and then hand them five thousand dollars but like there are other ways to make it up to them so fines in the nhl they're they're not a thing they're literally not a thing so if you go forward with that thinking they've done one thing and they've suspended jonathan drew and so question about miko ranting in play do you think it deserved more than one game uh well so there's people are giving him a lifetime achievement award which i don't think you can do like they're trying to combine what he did to romanov and coronado and that's not how it works um the it was a bad hit on coronado and also like you messed his face up dude um uh what the nhl deems to be an injury is a complete gray area like there
Starting point is 01:24:26 was a high stick uh on dakota joshua the other day where he was bleeding and i think it was mike johnson on the broadcast was like i don't know that looks like an injury to me yeah but like what they deem to be an injury like what is what does coronado have to do cross his arms over his chest and get carted off the ice like what what does it gotta be um i it was a bad hit real bad hit you can argue he turns which he does but the implication from that press release to me is had he not been ejected from the previous game he wouldn't have got anything yep that's exactly how i read it as well and that there is no supplemental discipline coming for ranting in and that he only got it because it's written down that it has to be automatic which i think
Starting point is 01:25:18 is an egregious mistake oh yeah i'll join you on that like all so players have been given a five and then they review it but then even after the game it's reviewed by the league because of situations like this and they rescind the game misconduct yes um so that this situation doesn't arise the only conclusion i can come to is the league was thinking you know what yeah maybe we will give them a game and because the automatic thing was in there anyway they're like all right yeah that's but that then it should have been two yeah like if it's automatic one for the two game misconducts then there should be a level of discipline for the actual hit and there wasn't so that's why i asked the question because i did have a bone to pick with them just giving him the
Starting point is 01:26:11 automatic here's what it probably is it was a fine and they're like yeah well so there it's a suspension which is you rolled your eyes no it's absurd i've rolled my eyes at this fucking department of player safety that clearly has no regard for safety of these nhl nhl players are the highest paid amateur athletes in the world this is not a professional sports league uh alexander alexander romanov will be out five to six months by the way yeah that's like there's the top down view if you want it this angle where you really see him oh smushed that's bad like that it's bad so much less of an excuse for that than the roman i don't like that i like that way like sorry this one to me is worse yes last time i would i was willing to hear the
Starting point is 01:26:56 argument yep that his feet got tangled he goes into the guy heart it's hard to control yourself going at 400 kilometers per hour he puts his arm on him he falls he crushes him oh okay super unfortunate all right unfortunate some leeway here it's just the hit yeah give him a game for it and if you're giving him a game it needs to be two games because one is automatic and one should before the hit they don't disagree they missed yeah well and like so i gotta think he's getting a bit of a miko ranton thing here we know the nhl doesn't want star players not playing uh which is dumb and wrong because of all the shit they allow to happen to mcdavid and other star players in this league but that's akin to match fixing that's favoritism what it isn't it
Starting point is 01:27:54 like what the one thing that you know it's it's a business and all that like yeah it's a sport league though there's standings uh you try to outscore the other team and there's lineups and you try to make sure your lineup is better than their lineup miko ranton and should sit for the thing that miko ranton did and he should by the logic that you laid out that i think is pretty sound jesse it should be more than one game and what about my guy right matt coronado matters less than miko ranton and some of you are listening right now and going yeah and you can think that but the league can't if the league is run like a fair and balanced uh sport league which it's not hey steve what the entirety of how the game of hockey is played at the nhl level today
Starting point is 01:28:45 is based on match fixing in the way that you describe it because any penalty on the ice comes with the thoughts in the back of the referee's mind that now it's on the other team to get one if you if you think like this is match fixing then like the whole thing of how hockey is managed by the referees because it is not objectively called by the referees else there would be so many more penalties calls and we'd see situations where a team takes five power plays the other team takes one but we don't see that when you go and you look at the penalties and penalty um penalties power plays and penalty kill time it's usually even it's usually you are on the same side because games are managed and if we want to get in that discussion that is how the
Starting point is 01:29:32 nhl is happy to have their league run referees are not there to just call things they're there to manage games for both sides to kind of be equal the the one of them i think the most underrated media personality in all of hockey is tim peele uh and not because i think he's good at what he does he's awful but uh however bad you think it is it's worse oh he gave away all the secrets he gave away all the because and i don't know he's always been this person he did an article years ago that i'm pretty sure he got in trouble for where he hung out with greg wischinski yeah yeah because that was one of the most interesting hockey articles of all time by the way yeah and i'm pretty sure he got punished for it and he keeps giving the game away and uh he had his
Starting point is 01:30:18 career ended because he got caught essentially like match fixing adjacent yeah uh on microphone but the the reason at the time i was like man i kind of feel bad for him is because they're all doing it yeah under your terms of this yeah you watch a rigged sport in that the referees are just doing things to massage things in certain ways when they're like oh we owe this team one we owe that guy one we're not going to call a suspension here because of this that's that's your rig sport that you love so much dan kelly is so lucky that i'm pretty sure he's i don't not a ref he's a linesman but he's so lucky michael bunting has good balance yeah i'll never forget that yeah he shoved michael bunting off the ice shoved him off the ice bunting trips and the fact
Starting point is 01:31:11 that bunting doesn't fall down is the only reason that wasn't like a huge hockey night in canada national story if bunting falls down we go jesus what was that uh and god bless michael bunting for turning around and then having the look of death in his eyes to snap on this man and restraining himself from not doing anything in that moment. If Bunting shoves him back for not being able to not reacting in that moment. If Bunting shoves him back, he
Starting point is 01:31:46 gets like 10 games in jail time. 10? He's done. He'll never play hockey again. So instead, what happened was everyone league wide got to just beat the shit out of them. And if the
Starting point is 01:32:02 Leafs go, hey, I don't know if that's allowed the and every ref in the nhl just goes you want what he's having yeah he has to turn around after being shoved by a ref and say thank you daddy please jump me again i want more because that's the only thing he's allowed to do else you will be banished from the league yeah no it is um it's awful yeah it's not good it's awful man um the way this sport is called league level department of player safety officiating it's bad like dave jackson's a lot more polite about it but sometimes he sends tweets i'm like okay like
Starting point is 01:32:42 you're telling me the way it is and i need you to understand i believe you but if you read what you just told me it's all it's very concerning i know that was your life for a long time and that was your job but please read what you just fucking sent me please read what you just fucking sent me oh my god the way games are called is akin to match fixing a lot of the time yep it's bad it's very bad uh game management no no no no let's get rid of that cute term match fixing uh moving on to a couple of goalies that are having an unbelievable november okay these are crazy stats so yaroslav askarov we mentioned him a couple times okay this guy's 7-1-0 with a 9-5-5 save percentage since the month started the other guy who deserves
Starting point is 01:33:36 a ton of credit is jesper wolstat from the minnesota wild 5-0-0 970 save percentage 0.99 nine goals against average three shutouts uh in 163 saves now what's crazy about yes for wallstead as the oilers struggle for goaltending people might remember that the oilers had the 20th overall pick that was used to select him and they traded it down because the wild wanted wallstead that bad now we were talking about first round pick goalies yesterday rare we forgot that they're that they turn in anything but i gotta tell you man uh it's i think it's unfair to put pin that on edmonton like i do yeah like what are we doing here uh but it is it's unfortunate that in the same month they could sure use yes for wallstead you can literally do that with every you can you
Starting point is 01:34:28 can but i'm gonna do it now okay people do it to the leafs all the time how about you freaking let me now uh shen ping who is a sharks reporter expanded a little bit on ask robin has a great uh a great article on san jose sharks now.com but the trade the trade that sent askarov to san jose needs to be revisited okay i'm looking at it right now so san jose got more than askarov in this trade he asked for a trade out because um uc soros had just signed a long-term extension and nashville was not convinced that he was ready to to play in the nhl so askroff gets on august 23rd 2024 beginning of last season uh he gets traded along with nolan burke and a 2025 third round pick that turned into tyler hopkins who's a leaf draft pick
Starting point is 01:35:18 okay yes well it's probably from the timothy lilligren trade ah there it is david edstrom magnus krona who's a goalie and a 2025 first round pick went the other way david edstrom is a forward who currently has two goals two assists and four points in 14 games in the american league uh magnus krona is in the ahl he's played four games this season two and two with a 906 he is 25 years old and uh reicher lee who they picked 26th overall in the 2025 draft as four goals five assists nine points in 12 games at michigan state i mean the kid is a fetus he's 19 years old so so it's hard to know but i do want to say that uh the best player in the trade always wins and that is shaping up to be panarin for sod level i mean it's essentially
Starting point is 01:36:18 askarov for reicher lee because edstrom's not looking real good right now he's still only 20 but it's he's not looking good he's also on his third nhl franchise yeah he was drafted by vegas and magnus corona i'm not sure is much more than a third stringer oof that's rough it is rough yeah so it goes back to the barry trotz conversation i do want to say san jose listen i i don't know if it's too early to believe but they are seven three and oh in their last 10 and i know it's early but they sure are close to a wild card spot they only the only reason they're not sitting in one right now is because they've played one more game than the utah mammoth who also have 25 points but they are slipping and they are slipping fast adam wild
Starting point is 01:37:14 are the sharks going to the playoffs you're not sure if you should believe oh i'm sure my friend you always believe the truth it's finally happening steve it is finally happening truthers rejoice we are vindicated please ignore my season preview video where he said they would finish last in the division the san jose sharks have arrived the present is teal it's happened jesse do you think they can sustain this stanley cup stanley cup i'm the first person to say it you are the first person to say it well 2026 there's there's your crown cup champion you're not the leader of the truthers san jose sharks hell yeah there we go invite us back they they look awesome they look awesome
Starting point is 01:38:07 And, you know, it's funny when they won their first game in October, it was their first win since March against the Leafs when we were there. Unbelievable. They went like six full months. Most of it. But it's ridiculous. The calendar months in between a regulation win or not even regulation win, just any win. And they have they have four more points than the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yeah, I'm surprised it's only four.
Starting point is 01:38:31 if I'm totally honest. Can I, um, like, I don't know how outrageous of a statement this is. I just haven't really heard much of it. Like everyone's talking about Macklin Celebrini in the context of the Canadian Olympic roster. And I'm here to open up the conversation about Macklin Celebrini winning the heart trophy. Um, he has 34 points in 23 games. The next leading scorer on the sharks has 21 whoa uh and after will smith who has 21 it's 14 the gap between him and and third is 20 points which in itself the gap would be third if the gap was a person they would be third and have more points than william ecklund i would entertain this conversation If the other Mac didn't exist, Nathan McKinnon.
Starting point is 01:39:28 Yeah, dude. He is the front runner, I think, right now. But second place is good. Celebrini will get votes. Yeah, yeah. If he keeps this up. Let's have a look at Nathan McKinnon, who, oh my God. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:40 17 goals and 20 assists for 37 points in 22 games. But Kale McCarr is 29 points in 22. Natchez has 28 points in 22. Lekkonen has 19 points in 22. he's definitely i mean it's not much argument he's got a better supporting how many losses does his team have uh in regulation one one there's 16 one in five he's the best player in the world right now he's the heart trophy front runner but backlit celebrina can have a second place that's gotta be one and two at the moment right sure i think that's gotta be
Starting point is 01:40:15 one i can't wait to cheer for nathan mckinnon again two years in a row i get to cheer for nathan mckinnon so good oh it's the best i love him i i'm telling you i i tell the story i'll tell it again my wife had you know she watches every leaf game but like doesn't know the nhl like we do right and that's fair um when we were watching four nations she's like who is that i said that's nathan mckinnon she's like that's nathan she's like he is fucking awesome dude the end of the olympics people gonna be like when harry potter had to go back to live at the i know oh my god it's crazy he's such a dog man he's insane oh i lived in a magical castle and now we're gonna live with you at us yeah under the stairs

Starting point is 01:44:53 bank you're richer than you think welcoming for the first time ever mr michael pesetta to the steve dangle podcast here uh as a movember ambassador and obviously you know we've got our movember stash is happening you know jesse jesse's getting called out in the comments right now mike because uh what you haven't oh there's there's people that are upset that you haven't shaved your beard into the mutton chop do beards not count no i well i think people are waiting for you to look like the 70s basketball player we all want you to all right it's coming wednesday it's coming wednesday on the sdp i'll shave it all off and i'll and i'll do the full thing okay now now uh michael like you've been involved with movember for a while and so curious about uh how
Starting point is 01:45:37 you got involved and why it's so important to you and I will tell you I should have told you this off the air you got to lean into these mics because they're a bit uh a bit uh sensitive so can you tell us how you got involved yeah so I think uh first started just like 16 year old junior hockey you you hear about Movember and you you hear about growing a mustache like I'm gonna try to grow a mustache and um you realize you you can't and then um from there you're like well what's all this about right and I think uh in junior there was um Terry Trafford he'd pass away and then uh they'd gone around the league and um some members of each team had to go take a course on mental health and like suicide prevention and i think um i was one of the
Starting point is 01:46:15 players that went to go do that for our team in sudbury and uh just really struck a chord with me how uh how important mental health is and then seeing that movember was aligned with that um it just i felt like connected to it and i thought i or i think as men we definitely have a hard time like um speaking up about our feelings or feeling like you're like this macho guy and you can't talk about how you're feeling or what's going on inside. And I think as you start those conversations and you're, you're someone that's open to having those conversations with other people, you realize that it helps a lot. So I think that's kind of how I initially got connected to it. Okay. Is that getting better? Like the ability for, you know,
Starting point is 01:46:52 manly men or whatever to open up? Yeah, I definitely, I definitely think it is. And I think around the league, more and more guys are just speaking up about what's going on or guys are taking a time to themselves when they need it to make sure that they're in the right place to, to be able to be successful on the ice and i think that's super important and um it shows it shows to the younger generation that it's okay to um to have an emotion or have some feelings and it's okay to speak about them yeah and the mental side of the game is becoming just as important as the physical side of the game you know we see all the sports coaches you know teaching about the psychology behind it if you're not in the right frame of mind you're not going to go out
Starting point is 01:47:26 there and perform well yeah i mean honestly like the the whole game is is between the ears like um If you're not in the right headspace going into a game, that's problematic, right? So I think a lot of guys that are struggling and struggling in silence, it definitely starts to affect your game. So I think having people to talk to and especially teammates, it definitely makes the season go by a lot easier and it allows you to be the best version of yourself. What is, I want to talk about the mental grind. They talk about like, you know, kids coming out of college. I remember when Matthew Nyes was sort of just breaking in. And I remember even like William Nylander in his kind of first year where he's sort of up and down pre Matthews and Marner being on the team. And they talk about the mental grind of a of an NHL season. What is that mental grind? Can you can you what are the things that, you know, come late December, early January? There's like a there's that point in January, February where I guess they kind of describe it like all the days blend together. How would you describe it and how do you get through it?
Starting point is 01:48:24 yeah I think um speaking for myself I mean the grind of the schedule is obviously part of it and when you get into January you're not as fresh as you were coming off a off season you're all your training and sort of those sort of things so you're playing every other day travel like you just start getting beat up and I think like mentally for me it was like every day I'm coming to the rink it's just like I'm earning my job you know I never just was able to feel comfortable that I had my job I spent the last four years there and in the NHL and you're sitting there every day wondering like i gotta do everything i can to to keep my jobs i think mentally that obviously plays that's that's gotta be a lot of strain yeah definitely i mean i think that's what
Starting point is 01:49:00 makes it fun also like as someone who's competitive you're like i'm going out there and i get the opportunity to to earn this job every single day so that's the fun side of it but on the flip side it's obviously stressful all the time you have a bad game it's easy to be hard on yourself or or kind of get down on yourself and i think that's where talking to people and and those sorts of definitely helps you stay in the right headspace. I still remember the first time I ever saw you play. It was a preseason game, Leafs-Habs, and you were with the Habs. And immediately, I was like, who is that? And they're going to have an NHL career 100% because you were just running around everywhere. And I was like, that guy's willing to do anything. When did you decide to become
Starting point is 01:49:41 that type of player honestly i i think like my whole life i've kind of played hard and definitely been someone that just wanted to work you know um i i was a good player in minor hockey and in junior hockey but uh once you got to pro you you kind of have to re-evaluate your game and see like where you're slotting in and um playing pro not really playing a lot sometimes you just have to find a way to make an impact right and i just wanted to do literally anything it took to to be able to get a chance to get more ice time or to to move up to the nhl and i think just that passion and that just fire of wanting to make it so bad you're you don't even think you're just like i literally go out and do anything yeah i like again you were on montreal and i wanted my team to win
Starting point is 01:50:24 but there there was a time a couple years ago where you fought ryan reeves and i was just like i respect him he's nuts i respect him that's that's a that's a decision someone out of their mind makes so i really respect it yeah i definitely uh definitely heard that a few times and uh i'd have a couple screws loose up there but uh no it's just i don't know i mean in my head i think i can win every fight and uh whether or not that happens i think that's just how you have to be wired and i think you just go into it thinking i can do this right i mean you lose a fight i remember the first time i fought him uh obviously lost well obviously but i lost the fight and um i was sitting there in in the plane all the boys like oh good job like way to take him on and stuff and i was just pissed
Starting point is 01:51:06 i'm like oh i could have done better should have done this that you know and that's what i'm thinking they're like buddy i don't know if you could have done better but uh no it's good and i think uh it's just fun to challenge yourself like that since we're on your journey to the nhl and i gotta ask about sudbury i'm sure a lot of people out there know you from the sudbury wolves and all the time you spent there but sudbury the city itself it's now getting a reputation because of Shorzy that it's Sud Vegas. It's a great party town. It's a great atmosphere. Is it truly a good time? Like, did you enjoy your time in Sudbury? Yeah, I definitely enjoyed my time in Sudbury. I know when I got there as a 16 year old, it was definitely a culture change for me coming from
Starting point is 01:51:46 Toronto. But I think as I got older and we were able to have some more fun with the guys, it was definitely a city we had a lot of fun and it was it was somewhere I appreciated playing and appreciate looking back there. Is Sud Vegas an appropriate nickname? I don't know if that's an appropriate nickname but Sudbury Sudbury can be fun and there's definitely uh there's like three bars and like a club maybe you know you can definitely have some fun right you know where people are oh yeah you don't know you don't have to question where you're going out for a night uh you just go to Colson and you're good yeah so so obviously like you know uh fear is one of those things that either makes you or breaks you and I think the way you play hockey is so interesting because you
Starting point is 01:52:24 are one of those guys who you know we alluded to it earlier fearless uh or at least that's the way it comes across how does it feel for you before a game um probably just like a little bit of nerves but like mostly just excited you know i just want to go out there and uh have a good game and for for my teammates and hopefully uh get a win um i think just playing hockey is just fun you know to get the opportunity to play hockey for a living and and be paid to do it is is crazy and sometimes you still have to pinch yourself and be able to do that in front of fans it's just i don't know how to describe it it's just a blast so i think you kind of have all of those emotions built up before a game you just want to go out there and you just want to do the best you can now you grew
Starting point is 01:53:03 up in toronto where's like can you give us like a general area i don't need the address but like where what neighborhood did you grow up in uh i was like around like keel in the 401 like maple leaf uh neighborhood okay and and i i well that's fitting um but you you end up in montreal you get drafted by the montreal canadians uh and and you know obviously make your way up through laval and And I'm curious about the Montreal Canadiens experience from a player perspective, because I mean, it's obviously an extraordinary franchise, unbelievable history. You know, when we've seen games in Montreal, it's electric at the Bell Center, especially on a Saturday night.
Starting point is 01:53:40 What did you what did you take away from that experience that, you know, when you look back in your career, you know, in 20 years ago, man, that was awesome. Yeah, I mean, the Bell Center is a special place. the habser uh special franchise obviously the history all of that i remember just some of my first times there obviously the arena is crazy but even just like playing uh soccer like sewer ball before the game and you're sitting there and you see like an old timer pass by uh because where the alumni lounge was they kind of had to walk past our sewer game and uh being a toronto fan growing up like you're not as familiar with some of the old timers or at least at the time i
Starting point is 01:54:15 wasn't so you'd see somebody walk by and just like you could kind of tell when a guy's like a hockey player so you see someone walk by and then you'd ask when the french guys hey like who's that and they'd be like oh it's uh yvonne corvia and he's got like 10 stanley cops it's like everyone in the alumni lounge has like 10 stanley cops it's like they do oh you only have four it's like so it's like you just you see these living legends and it's just like um you realize the history behind the team and it's so special to put that jersey on and then you go out there in the bell center 20 000 people every night uh especially like leafs habs at the bell center was was was unbelievable and so far in my career some of the best uh or the most fun i've had
Starting point is 01:54:52 playing hockey for sure and you got to see the rise of suzuki caulfield hudson slavkovsky i mean it seems like a very exciting sort of young group there what were those guys like when they kind of first got there and you guys were all kind of coming up together yeah uh just seeing their game develop i mean even suzuki right now like he's on another level and being able to see that like as he was coming up and just keep getting better and better and see how hard he works at at his craft um it's special and i'm glad i got to witness that and now you see these young guys like hudson demidov like just being able to play with them and and seeing what they can do on the ice it's uh it's special and these young guys got a lot of fire and it seems like it's fun too like
Starting point is 01:55:33 the vibes are good there even when you know last season when the when you guys really weren't really off to the best start it still seemed like the vibes were pretty good marty st louis as a coach can you tell us anything about what it's like to play under him yeah um he's a great coach and yeah the vibes are we're good over there they got a lot of young guys that are um pushing and wanting to be better so a lot of guys like in similar situations trying to make make a name for themselves so i feel like that pushes your culture a lot um marty's a coach was was great he definitely helped me a lot to to push my game to another level and um he's someone that's on the ice when you're picking his brain the way that he processes the game was uh was definitely at
Starting point is 01:56:09 another level and you can realize like why he was as good as he was because his brain just operated in a in a different uh different level of the game like you're talking to him hey like when you pick up the puck on the wall what do you see and he's like breaking down what he sees and you're like okay like i don't not see any of that like and you're trying to figure that out right and then as you talk to him more you try to push yourself to to see those things and it definitely helps your game and then you get a call in july this year and it's toronto and it's the team that you grew up watching now let me ask you before i before i ask you about that phone call uh who was who were your guys growing up who were the people that you loved um when you were a kid
Starting point is 01:56:45 watching the toronto maples so matt sundin was always my favorite player uh i wore number 13 growing up pretty much the whole time in junior um that was that was always my my player gary roberts was my brother's player so i think those two guys were guys that we were we were fans of uh on the leafs i know um they would have stopped playing like pretty early on to when i was still a young kid but those were definitely our favorite players growing up and what was that call like this summer like how did that how did it how'd you end up here because it's you're living you know the dream that i think you know all of us sitting at this table had like we we are all playing road hockey whatever and like you know when you're in house league and you're seven years
Starting point is 01:57:21 old you can you can see like hey maybe i could you know and obviously most of us don't have the athletic gifts my five-year-old very confidently tells me he's going to play both uh in the nhl and MLB oh that's great he knows dual sport athlete yeah yeah dual sport the next Deion Sanders they call him yeah uh so for you like I'm just like that must be a really surreal moment yeah I think um yeah when I got that phone call and even at the start once you realize you're gonna sign definitely had to pinch myself a few times like uh I'd said um on a couple shows that I did that I did before it's like I have a picture of Matt Sandin in in my room still and it's like I remember like going to bed one night like wow i like i'm gonna be able to fight for the opportunity
Starting point is 01:58:04 to put that jersey on like i've been dreaming of that my whole life right so i think as a kid um the kid in me just came out and you realize how special that is so uh again and even in the situation i'm at now you're just excited to like fight for the opportunity to put that jersey back on and um or put it on for the first time and uh it's just exciting uh and i'm you know curious about some of the guys you're playing with like obviously easton cowan was down for a little bit uh what did you see from him and obviously you're being you being a few years older a few years wiser i would say um you know he is a lot of fans are looking at him like you know he's a big part of the future here what did you see in his game that makes him special yeah so just uh mostly
Starting point is 01:58:44 seeing him at camp uh when he came down i happened to be hurt um when you come down to to play with the marlies but uh just seeing him in camp like he's got a great motor he works hard he's a great kid. And I think for me, when I, when I look at young skilled players like that, obviously they have just an unbelievable amount of skill, but it's like, how hard do they work? How are their off ice habits? Like what kind of person they are? And he checks all the boxes there. So to see that it's like, he's going to have a bright future. And you like to see that from the young guys. One of the guys I've been really curious about is Will Villeneuve. What can you tell us about his game? Yeah. Philly is a great player. He's, he's, he's one of the best defensemen for us
Starting point is 01:59:20 down with the Marlies right now and he's steady and I think again as a person he's a really good dude and I think he's got the skills to be a good player and I think he's shown that the last few years here with the Marlies and I think he's someone that I know when I jump over the boards I hope that he's on the ice with me at the same time. Good setup guy. Yeah exactly so it's fun playing with him and it's fun to see him build his game. I love Quillen's game because it's with a lot of speed you know he's got a lot of speed through the neutral zone how do you have you watched him uh play with the marlies like when you're out there with him how have you liked his game yeah again another young guy that um checks all those boxes works hard a good person off the
Starting point is 01:59:59 ice and then on the ice obviously like high end speed he's made some some great plays and he's had a really really good start to the season with the with the marley so it was nice to see him get that uh that get the call up and get the opportunity to kind of show what he can do uh in the nhl so i think uh you're in a good system when you play good and you get rewarded for it so it was nice to see him get called up there when a guy gets a call up like that is it just all high fives and like he's got to pay for like next dinner or something when he's back down like how does that work yeah guys will definitely bug him when he comes down i think it was like uh we just started practice and all of a sudden he was uh getting pulled off to go switch sides because
Starting point is 02:00:32 we practiced at uh ford performance there or mastercard whatever the name is nowadays but um yeah so he just got pulled off so i don't even think we uh we got a chance to really give him a stick tap but uh if he comes back down hopefully not but for him but uh i'm sure the guys will have a good laugh with him who makes you laugh on the team uh who makes me laugh a lot of guys there's a landon sim yeah steve loves landon loves landon yeah simmer uh simmer makes me laugh all the time uh he's definitely a funny guy and um he makes me laugh for sure and uh bo beau grew makes me laugh too yeah silly guy and uh frenchman so uh he makes me laugh too i sit beside him in the room i notice he keeps getting the belt um with the team every time i see the
Starting point is 02:01:20 marley's pop up in my feet i'm like he got it again you know like what's he done for the team uh this year yeah he's been uh he's off to a good start as well uh solid player like um pushes the pace good like uh wasn't too familiar with his game but now being able to see him play like you realize he's a he's a really good hockey player great hockey sense he scored a sick goal the other night uh against iowa like on a cutback and then shot it back far side so uh it's nice to see uh guys playing hard like that well you know what i want to say that that uh you know it's been a big year for movember in canada people forget that this is sort of like a worldwide thing and and um jesse and i were at a movember event last thursday and you know this the global ceo was
Starting point is 02:02:00 there and you know uh announced that movember in canada has just crossed the 10 million dollars raised mark which i think is pretty you know pretty outstanding the one thing though that is still to be determined is who does better at the end of this all is it sdpn or is it michael posetum uh because i believe we're neck and neck right now jesse do you have the you have the pages up where are we at we're at uh about 1800 okay uh i don't i don't know i think i'm i think i'm pretty close to 1800 too so that's uh challenge accepted yeah it's uh it all goes to great cause too so it's challenge accepted i gotta i gotta make a last minute push yeah yeah listen listen i might just have to donate myself they'll push me over you guys
Starting point is 02:02:37 anonymous donation right at the end you're like where did that come from that's m listen let me say let me say this uh we've been leaf fans our whole lives like you have and it's great to have somebody here that loves this team the way that you do because we, the fans, love it the way you do. And so we're wishing you all the success and all the luck, not just in trying to beat us in Movember, which I don't think we're going to let you do, but beyond that, you know, in your time here,
Starting point is 02:03:12 and we know the NHL can be really unpredictable, we're happy to have you here, and we're excited to see you come up and play for the guys. And we know that you're fearless, and we love that kind of stuff here. So I'm glad you're in Toronto, man. Yeah, I appreciate that. And like I always said, just super excited for that opportunity. And, you know, I'm working as hard as I can to get back to where I want to be.
Starting point is 02:03:31 And it's just one day at a time. Beautiful. Well, check out both Michael Bozzetta's page, but don't donate to him. Donate to us. SDPN's page.
