When WestJet first took flight in 1996, the vibes were a bit different.
People thought denim on denim was peak fashion, inline skates were everywhere,
and two out of three women rocked the Rachel.
While those things stayed in the 90s, one thing that hasn't is that fuzzy feeling you get
when WestJet welcomes you on board.
Here's to WestJetting since 96.
Travel back in time with us, and actually travel with us at westjet.com slash 30 years.
Pete, the Steve Dangle Podcast.
With your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
Over a billion dollars handed out.
Good for her.
Over the last two days, it's July the 3rd, if you're watching this recording.
And I believe between July 2nd and 3rd, there was like $4 handed out.
Yeah, $450.
No one signed.
Nobody signed.
Actually, Anton Lindell signed this morning.
That was an extension, though.
Yeah, $5.5 million.
I wouldn't even count that.
Literally like 10 bucks was handed out by GMs.
Hey, that is Dakota Mermis,
Philippe Myers,
and Cedric Paré erasure.
Well, you just wrecked the way
I was going to get into this show.
Oh, no.
Because I was going to ask Jesse
to name all three players the Leafs signed yesterday.
And Steve was like,
nah, let me take it.
I was going to fail that quiz.
Off the top of my dome.
I was proud of you
because even when I watched your video
about it this morning,
I was like, okay, Philippe Myers
Myers and Cedric Paré had the
Oceanic jersey on because he didn't want the
Boston one. I'm like, Mermis,
Mermis, what's his first name? And I would have never got
Dakota Mermis. Hey, Leaf fans
wanted them to sign a Dakota. You got
your wish. Just a different guy.
Here's an interesting one. A lot
of no move, no
trades signed yesterday.
Only two players in the NBA have a no trade
clause. Did you know that? Yeah.
Bradley Beal for a long time was the
only nba player with a no trade clause and then now lebron got one today here's what you need
to get a no trade clause in the nba eight years of nba experience at least four with your current
team you must sign a new contract rather than extending an existing one as well so your contract
had to have expired and then you sign a new one and that's how you get yeah so if if you're uh
if you've been with the team for eight years but you extend your deal sorry is that weird so it's
to encourage movement it makes sense it's to encourage movement but like if you're a player
you're like well what if i don't want to move what if i like my wife and kids right which is
apparently becoming an issue uh maybe we'll touch upon that uh later in the show this is like maybe
the first thing i've seen where i'm like okay nhl players have that over nba players yes but so the
score is now one to 470 and let me just say this uh it's not better no right way better to have
the nba version way better what more money way more movement i think i think it's a very
interesting conversation because yeah you're encouraging movement in the nba but in the nhl
it seems like the no move and no trade clauses don't mean anything yeah because everybody has
one and they we still have just as much movement in the nhl as the nba it's just there's more stars
in the nba so those deals are bigger they're a bigger deal but it seems like hey if you want
to get traded in the nhl and you have a no trade clause we can still trade you we'll find a way
we can waive you yeah man so i guess if you have one in the nba there's more power because no one
has them right it's two guys yeah and bradley beal got traded he waited his uh no trade clause
but he could dictate where he wanted to go he wanted to go to phoenix to play with duran and
booker and he said okay i'm gonna use my no trade clause to get myself there don't nba players like
isn't their power from i'm just not gonna go yeah oh yeah they just alonzo morning
no i'm not i'll never forget what alonzo morning did to no me neither um uh you know what nobody
named babcock should ever run a toronto sports team again that was rob babcock general manager
of the uh of the toronto raptors at that time that made the vince carter for alonzo morning
trade and alonzo refused to show up now uh leaf signed for three players yesterday and the fourth
were still questioning steve outlined it in the video some of the other things we're going to get
to today just so you guys know um is uh where tarasenko was spotted today we're going to talk
stamp coast we're going to talk edmonton we're going to talk true but in new york and on the
vip episode that we're recording after this which won't be out till later i want to deep dive
into the paul george trade uh that sent him to the la clippers originally because he just signed
with the 76ers and it's a bonkers bonkers deal we were we were talking about that with producer
hayden if kawai stays they at least get to the 2020 final i think kawai you think it'd be boston
yeah they almost be boston without them let's save this for vip okay we do that uh all right
so the leaf sign philippe myers a guy who played for the marlies was traded to the marlies but was
never officially on an nhl contract with the toronto maple leafs two three years ago this guy
is big he has played for the lightning so he knows how to win you would assume uh what do we
see for philippe myers uh depth um this is uh like a you gotta look at it you gotta look at
mermis and you gotta look at myers and if you're wondering who to compare them to you gotta look
back at how you felt about the william lagasin signing and about the simone benoit signing
that's what it was for a lot of people are like i didn't feel anything well exactly right now
Now, Philippe Myers is 220 pounds and six foot six or six, seven.
OK, I'll be six foot six.
Yeah.
OK, OK.
So huge, dude.
The Marley's decor is going to be absolutely monstrous.
Yeah.
Next year, they got some really big guys back there.
No, like you need a guy who can chip in and give you a few games.
How did you feel about Max Lajoie?
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Max Lajoie was a guy who Sheldon Keefe played for like five minutes a game.
I think with a season high of maybe nine.
That's I mean, if Myers is playing full time top six minutes for you, it's either because he earned it or you're in deep trouble because too many guys are hurt.
Does Myers pass Marshall Refai on the depth chart?
Yes.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
Well, I ever spoke to play.
Well, no, he wasn't.
But also Marshall Refai left handed shot.
as i learned um i kept calling him right-handed he's not uh i don't know who i was thinking about
but it's not him so in the situation last season when refi had to play nhl games yes if we're the
leaf star in a situation like that again myers would be the option instead of refi i i would say
murmus would be the option instead of refi yeah murmus is is lagasin is benoit he he played 47
games in the nhl last year averaged 14 minutes with the minnesota wild and like i don't think
anybody believes that no i know i don't believe that i saw it tweeted it's probably a lie um
like it that's either how how good is dakota murmurs or how bad were the minnesota wild
there's footage of him so i know he was there i saw it it's crazy he scored three goals man i'm
right his first career goal against jordan bennington is the funniest first career goal
i think i've ever seen why is that it's awful oh it should not have gone in i feel really bad for
him because he came up in the coyote system and that really sucks like yeah you know like his
first games were for the coyotes boo he he all three of those guys who the leaf signed yesterday
were screwed to varying degrees by covid i mean weren't we all um but uh all these guys started
like kind of coming into their own as professionals and then the world shuts down and all of a sudden
and everyone forgets who you are.
And that happened to first-round picks, too.
I look at Eric Brandstrom, who just, I believe, signed in Tampa.
Where did he sign?
I don't know.
It doesn't matter.
Colorado, wasn't it?
Colorado, yeah.
Good little depth pickup for Colorado,
who is not sure how much cap space they have.
Got him for 900 grand.
Yeah.
It's a good risk.
I think that's a former first-round pick.
Lassie Thompson's another guy in Ottawa
who was waived and then claimed and then re-waived
and then claimed again by Ottawa.
Bernard Docker was waived.
Yeah.
I mean, Nick Robertson.
Yeah.
I think he got screwed a little bit by injuries,
but to say that a lot of those guys in that period
were not screwed by a lack of development is wrong.
Is Kapokako a bust or a very young man
who had his development hindered?
Alexi Lafreniere didn't really break out until this year.
Quentin Byfield didn't really break out until this year.
And those are two guys, I believe, from the 2020 draft class.
It was a 2021.
It's been hard.
Yeah, so trade Nick Robertson.
yeah no i still i don't understand what he's doing well here's what we understand we know
the leafs are pissed i think he's pissed yeah well i think it's both sides and and it's one
of those things the nick robertson thing if we're going to veer off there for just a second um you
know we talked about it on free agency day uh i think the agent put it out there on free agency
day and and as an agent that's what you got to do right you got to advocate for your client of
um uh because they wanted to see if there could be a move that he was included in right because
that of of all days of the year free agency day july 1st is where all the most moves are done and
we had you know cj said it on the cj show they had like a month lead up everybody was tampering
so if everybody's tampering nobody's tampering and uh you know i look at it and and i look at
nick robertson situation and i question um i question why uh he feels the way that he does
and i'll and i'll say this because i don't this is a guy that the leaf stuck with
this is a guy who had multiple injuries this is a guy who when he's been up he has scored goals
and i listen i'm a i'm a nick robertson booster but nick robertson i have to be realistic as a
nick robertson booster about what nick robertson does when he gets below his own red line or the
red line when he gets on the defensive side of the puck and putting him a dummy had it's that
was crazy fun shifts and it's really not fun shifts this guy i think is a is an absolute
lock if he's in the lineup to be on your second power play unit with that shot it's amazing
should be um and i hope the leaf spread the talent around on the on the power play units
this upcoming season i think this guy's going to get 20 goals if he gets regular ice time
if you look at his what he had 15 last year and he only played 60 games or something like that
yeah no you should uh you should get 20 so you should get 20 as a 23 year old but i look at this
and i think okay what cards do you believe that you have and that's why the the agent leaking that
out and saying you know he doesn't want he has no interest in signing a contract with toronto
why would toronto trade him toronto needs a guy like that they need a depth guy to score 20 goals
this year to me seems like nick's opportunity to step in full time yeah and and and badger living
said in the press conference yesterday i'm still looking for top six help and it's going to be
difficult for him to do that so i look at this and i go nick why now well a combination of injuries
um defensive gaps mostly injuries though like if i'm him right the leafs put me in to the playoffs
as an 18 year old i think um in a very well a very unique situation yeah he had their last um
friggin five on five goal in game three of a five game series run it back um
but he uh you know it looked like the sky was the limit and oh i wonder if this guy's going to be a
full-time guy and because of unique circumstances again with covid he's playing in the ahl years
before he should be then he gets injured again and he's been lapped by two guys on the depth chart
at least two guys um matthew nyes was taken after him the year after him yes he's been lapped um
bobby mcmahon shows up out of nowhere does well guess what lapped right um both those guys if
robertson signs are ahead of him in the depth chart and in all of this as well as in in his
unhappiness is the fact that because of the way the cap is structured and what they do with this
team he's been the guy that they're sending up and down to make the the cap work for the entire
team and that's been frustrating for him behind the scenes you know you don't want to be the the
cap shenanigans that the Leafs have to do calling up and down he played like 11 games the Marlies
last year pretty sure he didn't sign any bonuses no just like you know who else did that in and
out of the lineup up and down didn't sign any bonuses high draft pick you know what i feel
disrespected you know what trade me rasmus sandin right i don't i don't think any leaf
fans really miss sandin at this point well he's a good player he's a good player for making four
and a half with washington that's part of it and they're able to recoup a first round pick for that
yes no no which they turned to cowan yeah they got out of it they got out of it okay yeah they
got out of it okay but guys like uh this is my life um so like i can't help but pick up on trends
like this is what i do this is just gonna keep happening well it's gonna keep happening who's
the next one i don't think so who's the next one i i don't i don't think so i think yeah you sure
yeah i am you want to put money on it i doubt it i think that what's happening here is that
you know what it gets but gets to nick robertson he's frustrated i get that he's probably
communicated that frustrating frustration of the team the team's probably like cool man uh you're
not a priority and the actual living said as much in the press conference you referenced yeah no it's
he's like nick's nick's an important part here you know he's important piece and he's gonna be
in training camp so and and that's the thing is he's gonna be in training camp because what's
nick gonna do sit out a year you're gonna play in zurich like you can so last night last night i was
like you know what i'm gonna look at trade possibilities for nick robertson um and i'm
gonna make him as happy as possible i'm gonna trade him to california i'm gonna trade him where
he's from and two of those teams have a an abundance of opportunity right they must because
anaheim you would think is special one is the ducks and the other is the um friggin sharks
if you go and look at their depth charts no not really not really and and like you also got to be
able to offer the leaf something in a trade that would make it worthwhile the best i could do is
like fabian zetterlund but like i don't know why the sharks would do that i i wonder if if the
leafs were going to move on from a guy like nick he's he's not under contracts you don't save
anything on the cap but like do you it does he give you a pick that you can then spend on trade
deadline next year or you know is it basically can you recoup the second round or that you
right well i don't think anybody's moving a second round do you want to go to the other
california team and you take rfa problem for rfa problem you trade them for arthur kaliev
to the kings who requested a trade i think like earlier in february ish tell me a little bit
they never moved arthur kaliev uh underperforming big winger oh brad likes that for the kings who
can't find a place in the lineup okay so he wants to move on and maybe you trade problem for problem
okay possible how how do you do last year i believe it was 15 points in 51 games yeah
robertson had that many goals
if i'm taking kaliev um it's not enough frankly i look i look at kaliev though as
somebody who had higher expectations you somebody who performed really well in the ohl
it was 44 goals in 57 games robertson did better in the ohl for sure but you can't you can't just
get nick robertson back you'd have to keep nick robertson for that yeah so you were we're asking
to probably lose the trade in the short term to maybe win in the long run i think i think you
know i i think about me being 22 and i was oh god very oh god i was very ambitious and very
wanting to move up the ladder and i got remember i got my first morning show when i was 23 in
calgary okay and as a 36 year old man is that not psychotic what giving 23 year old you a morning
show i was a little i was i was mature work-wise i wasn't mature relationship-wise right it's
different i started radio when i was 18 right so i had five years of experience at that point so
um but but i think so it would have been dumb for me i remember the general manager's name
guy named Stu Myers he sat me down when I got to Calgary and this is four or five months in because
I was getting antsy I was like you know this is we're not high enough in the ratings because I'm
very competitive behind the scenes and and um and he sat me down he's like listen your career has
gone like this he's like there are going to be points of your career where it kind of goes like
this so you you you're you've been on a rocket ship it's okay for it to not be a rocket ship
forever uh you're there's going to be times where you're building for the next stage I had a lot of
that right around the same age and i look at nick robertson and i feel like i get that part of it
and i feel like it's the leaf's job to be the mature ones to be the adults in the room they
have older management right all the guys are in their 50s and 60s they understand what it's like
to be in your early 20s to sit them down and say listen nick we get where you're at we get that
this hasn't been a perfect scenario for you we get the injuries have been a biter uh that we know
that covid's played a role in this change of general manager change of coach change of line
mates last season was a bit of a mess especially in the first three months while they were trying
to figure out the lines uh keith clearly wasn't a big big fan here are the three things we need
you to do and i'm assuming the three things would be uh continue to score goals uh make simple plays
in the defensive zone don't try to deke your way out of problems better skating and work on the
skating. And if you could do those three things, you're a lock to be second or third line this
year and you'll get some power play time. And, and that's, I think that's what least management
needs to do. I understand the emotion on his side. I think least management needs to be, okay,
we're, we're the adults in the room, calm this young adult down and show them, listen, you do
have a real chance here. We have a salary cap situation that allows you to have a real chance
here and you know here's the contract it's a one year it's a prove it prove it show us you can hit
20 goals like we think you can one year is exactly what i was thinking yeah and that's what i would
say and then and then say at the end of that we'll revisit this and if you're still not happy we can
talk about it then see even a one year like again the leafs have all the leverage here the all the
all nick robertson can do is withhold the services that's all he can do yeah and he doesn't want to
go to europe because he'll be out of sight out of mind in europe yeah yeah i don't think that's
really on the table i think some people would suggest that but it's i just want to i wanted
to throw that out there the ideal scenario is nick robertson plays for toronto maple leafs next
season like i don't think there's not a lot of trades out there you're winning uh just initially
in the one for one trade or whatever it would be so yeah you want him to just change the attitude
going into the season and be willing to earn a job here and then if it doesn't go well if you
play your way into the lineup then you're happy here or if you play well then they can move you
for a piece he waited too long to put that trade request out he did um because someone uh i don't
remember who it was they tweeted me like as soon as it happened they're like what about chicago
like there's lots of opportunity there and the second he said it i went whoa chicago that's a
really good fit and they signed a few guys i'm like it's not a good fit anymore yeah like it's
july 3rd now um if you're not sitting in a seat you're screwed well except nick today's your lucky
day you're not screwed there's a seat in blue and white number 89 right here in toronto the current
one you're sitting on yeah man like listen you want to get out of here at some point fine um
now it's not the time yeah uh now let's get to the last guy that they signed uh before we get too far
well we're already very far from it steve we have to play a game with um mr murmus oh because that's
the guy i wanted to talk about oh you do okay yeah the third guy uh uh let me just pull up the game
i was gonna play oh parade was the guy yeah parade i don't know anything interchangeable
good for him first nhl contract at age 25 good for him yeah perfect so if you want to talk to
murmur talk about murmurs this is great do the do the murmurs murmurs played one game against
toronto maple leafs oh he definitely scored didn't he not this season but in 2023 you're joking so
in 2023 on february 24th minnesota played toronto and dakota murmurs was in the lineup can you tell
me what happened in that game who scored who won steve dangle tell me the date again amazing
memory February 24th 2023 the Minnesota Wild played the Toronto Maple Leafs Dakota Mermis
was in the lineup and played 12 minutes and 54 seconds so you have in your lifetime watch Dakota
Mermis play 12 minutes and 54 seconds of hockey is this the game I feel like this might be too
long ago I might be barking up the wrong tree here is this the game where the Leafs okay is
this game in Toronto it was a home game the game was played at Scotiabank Arena is this the game
where the Leafs kicked Minnesota's ass it was they were up like five nothing or something like that
and Minnesota scored a goal with like 90 seconds or a minute left and it was Dakota Mermis's
uh it was Dakota Mermis no damn it is not that game someone scored their first NHL goal oh man
no one in this game scored their first nhl goal no one and this is february 2023 so this would
have been two seasons ago the final score do you want me to give it to you yeah two one leafs
two one leafs and he had the only minnesota goal no he didn't score this game oh you said i thought
you said he scored no i didn't oh my bad yeah oh he played against the league played against
the leagues yes yes yes um william neilander scored an ot winner is this jogging memory at all
no oh it might oh it might did he fight someone
mermis yeah no no wait no i don't know tell me all right tell me jesse no that's that's the game
i hate giving you no you gotta give me more more from the game so brandon duhaime opened the
scoring uh assisted by frederick goudreau david comp also scored in that first period it was tied
one one then wait they scored in the first period two goals in the first uh one from duhaime one
from count conf so it's one one at the end of the one when did minnesota score their first goal 12
10 okay do you remember the game now yes because i won 50 bucks off that goal hey no way because i
um i chose i was like you're gonna the the first goal scorer is gonna be in this minute or
whatever and i want to say that goal went to review and i sprinkled a two dollar steve on it
and i won like 50 bucks elia samson off picked up the w steve i'm going to give you a failing grade
for this assignment of remembering the game that you watched dakota murmis play he was a minus one
in 12 minutes 54 seconds steve you got a failing grade for remembering dakota murmis is only one
career game against toronto maple leafs bum there you go adam uh well uh dakota murmis by the way
left shot six only six feet tall 30 years old can you tell us a little bit just quickly about him
and then we'll get to parade uh he's willing to scrap um there's a a great clip of him um
john merrill got completely blown up john merrill was his defense partner that night
uh he got blown up by michael pesetta pesetta gets into a second fight of the night
pretty sure he beat mermis in the fight um but he's he's willing to go now pesetta pesetta is
pretty pretty tough he's pretty tough and there's a minor league fight from 2016 uh Mermis fighting
Dave Brohl who used to be a Leaf prospect and Dave Grohl Dave Grohl Dave the Broldozer Brohl
wow um Dave Grohl doing on the ice yeah and and he said what if I said I'm not like the others
and then he played am I getting the best of you yeah hey ah ballad of the the Bakersfield
liners which is about the oilers uh farm team go go um he uh no he fought dave brohl who's got
something like four or five inches and 30 40 couple drumsticks right guitars yeah albums
taylor swift beefs microphones yes interesting tiktok interviews with pharrell williams where
he talks about stealing disco anyway um yeah he's willing to go anybody right so i like that about
him i we sort of saw that last summer where everyone nearly everyone true living got was
someone who can play hockey which is useful um but is willing to go right day at dakota
by the way um pretty good numbers uh within the ahl this is a guy who regularly puts up 25 26
points with whatever ahl squad he plays on and let me remind you he's a defenseman uh now cedric
Perret uh is an interesting one too because he's 25 this is his first pro contract sorry NHL pro
contract because obviously AHL is pro and so is ECHL uh but this is a guy who spent some time with
the Senators Belleville uh Utah Grizzlies Wheeling Whalers and the ECHL even better
oh Willie Naylor excuse me Colorado Eagles uh had 35 points last year what does this guy bring
assuming we're assuming to the Toronto Marlies well so look at him uh he gets drafted by the
Bruins in 2017 coming off a championship he's riding high and he gets even better and his
point total gets even better and then holy shit it takes off into the sky COVID and he
this season stops and there are no playoffs and they probably would have done well on account of
he was a really good player and uh all of a sudden you need to go play pro somewhere and there are
fewer pro jobs available because not all the ECHL teams are even playing the Newfoundland
Growlers did not play this season uh he does well with the Utah Grizzlies but again it's in the ECHL
Bruins let him go um they say don't worry it doesn't matter that we let him go on account of
We're just going to steal that giant guy from the Leafs.
Oh, God, life is pain.
And it took him a while to take off.
Like, if you look at his numbers, like, he didn't earn an NHL deal prior to this one.
You know what I mean?
So being a draft pick means nothing, but, you know, you got to earn it later down the line.
and if you look so many guys from the 2017 2018 2019 2020 draft you you know life isn't linear
progress isn't linear and it is especially true for guys in those draft classes right
right does he play his first career nhl game this season unlikely but the leafs don't have crazy
center depth do the marley's no so that's not really a lot of sense for them too no but like
you know if robertson doesn't sign um the leafs have two roster spots to fill up front
if you look at um their cap friendly page like great it's not great like not great at this rate
at this rate earnestly not joking nick abrazizi and alex steves might make the team at a camp
and everyone keeps saying everyone keeps saying off fraser minton easton cowan okay what's probably
going to happen is those two make the team out of camp and then get sent back to junior it doesn't
make sense to burn a year of their elcs if you don't have to yeah yep i agree um you know oh
cowan's got nothing left to learn there's no such thing right um you know minton's got nothing
there's there's no such thing yeah i would admit there's cowan's so young like there's no reason
at all no no no let's let's definitely make the same mistake with cowan we made with robertson
to get us into this position no no let's let's do that let's do that that's why it's what the
organization does let's go okay let's go come on rush them let's go well i i i'm of the opinion
that if he's good enough he should a hundred percent a hundred he's at that point i think
he doesn't have anything left to prove in junior is my point and i think we need to get rid of this
junior rule where guys because i think it hurts development the leafs have two choices send him
a junior or play him in the nhl there's no ahl and i think that that rule as a part of the big
rule changes in 2026 which we haven't even had the chance to really talk about yet but they're
moving 84 games they're gonna move this season earlier they're gonna shorten pre-season it's
pretty cool it's pretty cool wait you didn't know that who's moving the season to 84 games the nhl
what no i did not know that i mentioned to you on it was the law was happening you did was this
july 1st yeah yeah dude when i got home i like went face first into the couch and just
and it's all like none of it has been set in stone obviously no but they're proposed i'm
gonna pull it up it needs to be negotiated within the next cba here we go but they're
the proposed new rules for the nhl which is pretty cool gotta hear the nhl and pa uh have
had preliminary discussions on what a new nhl calendar would look like wouldn't take a fact
until the next cba in 2026 uh what's been discussed uh move the start of the regular season
to very early october it's already october 8th this year thank god i believe that's thanksgiving
thank god uh award the cup earlier in june cut the preseason to four games a team 84 game regular
season which i believe it was in 94 and 95 yes so this isn't unprecedented uh basically uh moving
things up two weeks or so not awarding the cup by may 31st but it sure beats what what it is
right now again preliminary discussions and i agree with lebron on that i listen if even if
it's the first week in june it would just be nice oh no what he tweeted this at 10 23 on canada day
yeah free agents million views though you're not one of them no apparently not now yeah because i
saw it and i'm like that's too that's too many words that's not breaking news i wanted to talk
about too long didn't read want to talk about yanni hockenpah but i before i do i should mention
that the Toronto Maple Leafs just broke some news.
Oh!
The Cincinnati Cyclones will be their ECHL affiliate.
Oh, there you go.
This is, we are thrilled to be associated
with an organization as storied
as the Maple Leaf Cyclones General Manager
and President Kristen Ropp
to partner with an organization
that places value in development of players
from the ECHL to the AHL to the NHL.
It's truly exciting.
Now, as you guys know,
unfortunately, the Newfoundland Growlers
folded this past year.
Just, you know what?
economics it's just hard to fly people in and out off of the island which is a bummer um uh and then
true living said we're excited to embark on this new partnership with the cincinnati cyclone
significant investment for our hockey club as we look to provide our players with the best
resources available for their growth and professional development you knew it wasn't
going to be long you knew it wasn't going to be long right um you know what's crazy is like even
with the border in the way and everything the echl team is now far closer yeah um yeah it was
true um yeah cincinnati's only what a five hour drive from here even so it's not a not a it's a
pretty short flight i think billy bishop which is our smaller airport flies in and out of ohio at
least so i think that's really really good and and listen and it's also a lot more central um
like when the marley's need someone they had to call them up from newfoundland and like newfoundland
imagine you're playing in like bakersfield yeah it's a lot like yes i know planes exist but dude
it's long yeah it's a lot it's a lot look what planes did to john mcclainburg well yeah you're
not you know it's not even a joke like yes and and this isn't oh well you're calling someone up
to your nhl team you're calling someone up from the echl where they make like i don't know 500
bucks a week to the AHL where dudes are making like 70 grand yeah you know what I mean like
these are not high budget teams right um even if it is part of the Leafs organization like they're
willing to set money on fire for the right things and I don't know if they view that as one of the
right things can you name a couple of guys who have made it up from the ECHL to the AHL to the
NHL with the Leafs is there is there is there an example of of that happening yeah of course
The most common ones are goalies, not necessarily with the Leafs.
James Reimer, Ben Scribbins, both played in the ECHL, AHL, and NHL.
Justin Hall was an ECHLer.
He played ECHL.
Signed an AHL deal, was called up, played in the NHL.
Timothy Lilligren played like one game.
Bobby McMahon.
In the ECHL.
Bobby McMahon.
Thank you, Jesse.
Bobby McMahon.
And I'm Mac Hallowell.
Mac Hallowell.
You mean new Pittsburgh Penguin,
Mac Hallowell?
Yes.
Yes.
How do this is guy loves this guy?
Uh,
SDA.
Simeon,
Jorgen,
Chinsev.
Yes.
Did he play in the NHL though?
He played one game.
Wow.
Okay.
All right.
Keith Petruzzelli,
as you mentioned,
Keith Petruzzelli,
again,
goalie.
Um,
did Trevor Moore ever play in the East?
Uh,
let's see.
Mike Stevens would know this.
I got it.
I'm looking it up.
No,
ah,
it's listen it's not common but you said you know for the Leafs uh Ardur Asimov Asimov
Asimov Asimov uh you've got Dennis Hildeby you've got other goalies in the system as well
that's how you get them time you you need to you need to so the Leafs will have
uh we know I would assume Matt Murray's gonna be an AHL player next year yeah because the
interesting thing about and the intelligent thing about signing Matt Murray we still don't know if
He got the Martin Jones bonus, which is a bonus of $100,000 right when training camp ends.
He probably did.
To protect him from waivers.
But the thing that I think protects Matt Murray from waivers is Matt Murray's injury history.
Yeah, well, I'm going to collect this guy.
He didn't play last year.
You had Martin Jones who was coming off of 27 NHL wins.
Yep.
That's why he needed protection.
Matt Murray is coming off of like three AHL wins.
It's not the same.
Not the same.
Steve, you forgot one more growler who graduated
and played three games for the Leafs.
Three games for the Leafs.
Latvian.
Oh, Christians Rubens.
Christians Rubens.
Three games for the Leafs in the 21-22 season
and then went to the Belleville Senators, Calgary Wranglers,
and now is playing for Modo.
mudu of uh the swedish hockey league good for him yeah good for a successful growler graduate
yes yeah listen it's it's rare for skaters to graduate from the echl and have long fruitful
nhl careers um less so for goalies but it happens it definitely happens and why not increase your
chances one those guys who give you several games a year you need those players yeah you do sometimes
they're art or sea loves sunny days calls for shady rays yeah i made that up that's a good one
you like that that's not bad thank you i appreciate that now listen uh you got sunshine season ahead
of you we're we're we're away from hockey for a little bit here we're in our backyards we're at
our friend with a pool's house and if you want to look cool by the pool which is uh no you i don't
have a you have a that's listen there's nothing better like having a pool is fine but having a
friend with a pool oh it's way better it's way way better and i'll tell you uh i'm excited to
lay by steve's pool you know my speedo that with my shady rays on steve you better thank america
right now america shady rays is having an independence day sale oh yes oh no we're two
days late what do you mean canada day no independence oh the other one we don't call
her as independence day it wasn't independent
i'll call it patriotic fireworks day they have they have a bunch of shades that are like up to
50 off on the site but we also have our own deal yep absolutely and that is 50 off two or more
pairs of sunglasses uh and remember those are backed by various types of protection uh lost
stolen and also if you have a child and they decide to bonk you on the face and your glasses
get damaged there's all those sorts of protection so have a look right now there's tons of styles
300 000 people oh like all of them are on sale that's right for independence day holy crap
300 000 people have rated shady rays five stars go to shadyrays.com and use the promo code sdp
50% off two or more pairs of sunglasses at ShadyRays.com.
Use that code SDP.

I saved this topic for a little bit later in the Leafs segment here because
by the time this goes up, it could be out of date.
Yep.
But as of right now, Leafs haven't signed Yanni Hockenpah, or at least they haven't made it official.
Brad Treliving talked about it.
He talked about it.
So what did he say?
You tell me.
I forget.
Well, I don't know what he said because I missed that.
He mentioned him, though, by name.
Yeah.
He talked about him.
It seems like, so Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, if you've missed this, Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun reported right after Hockenpah was signed that
Dallas was surprised that he was signed because they didn't think he was
going to play hockey again.
And multiple teams around the league were surprised because they didn't
think he was going to play hockey again,
something to do with cartilage and bone on bone in his knee,
which sounds really painful.
Final game of the season this past year was March 16th.
And then he didn't play for the rest of the year and missed the playoffs.
So,
you know,
I mean,
there are,
there are,
from what I understand,
ways around that.
What do you mean?
Well,
I think they've,
they do,
they're trying out material that to replace cartilage and good lord but you know it hasn't
gone exactly well cartilage is a very specific thing i'm so fascinated by all that are you like
well i listened to i want to say it was 32 thoughts did a full episode with a doctor who does
the disc replacement surgery that jack eichel got in his neck and my neck's killing me so right and
i'm getting older and so so it'll definitely get better well like it just interests me like and
it's also just technology and i find that interesting um the reason they're able to do
it is because your neck the discs in your neck are not load bearing they don't have to carry an
immense amount of weight which is why they can't do it in your low back yet because that is load
bearing boy your knees carry a lot of load they sure do so i i have no idea how that would work
But all of that synthetic body part stuff or whatever you want to call it, like all of that is enormously fascinating to me, not just for athletics.
It's just quality of life.
Sure.
Well, and a lot of the good surgeries that or the normal surgeries that people get on their knees and hips and shoulders and everything else came from athletics.
Right.
It's like it's like why a lot of a lot of the stuff we see in our road cars came from car racing.
You know, it's what pushes the limits of whatever thing it's in.
i think the difference is if i get that surgery like a hip surgery that an nhl player gets my
doctor would be like all right so like don't do anything for six months or like ever yeah here's
brad for lots of walks here's brad for living you guys are talking about him talking about
yanni hockinpah i tracked it down here is him on his july 1st media availability
talking about hockinpah you're the best
no never mind you're the worst bringing him in the fold i thought was was um so you know bringing
him into the into the fold i thought was was um we were excited about that and then um and i'm
just speaking specifically on the back end um with hawk and paw again a penalty killer one of the
areas um looking back at last season we wanted to address was our penalty kill and uh you know
So that's an area that Yanni, you know, really shines in is his ability to kill penalties.
You saw that in Dallas over the years and specifically this past season.
You know, and what we've got right now is we've got a, you know, we've got a group of defensemen.
And so I'd rather have too many than not enough.
And we'll try to sort this out.
So he was going through all the signings.
Is he in an elevator?
He's somewhere in the Leafs.
Man, that is such a boomer camera angle, by the way.
Like, why does nobody get him a stack of books and get him eye level?
He's on Zoom in a boardroom.
That's a boardroom.
You're the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Yeah.
So he was going through, like, that was the very beginning of his media veil before, like, any questions or anything like that.
And he just talks about all the signings.
And one of them is Hockenpott.
He's like, he's going to be useful on the penalty hill.
But the signing doesn't exist yet.
And this is very rare because he's not listed on the Leafs roster at all.
Yesterday, they updated their roster like that when they signed Mermis and Myers and Paré.
Hockenpah is not there.
He is represented on the Leafs cap-friendly page.
Which isn't official.
It's not official.
But interestingly enough, the Leafs are over the cap by roughly Yanni Hockenpah's cap hit.
there's something going on with either the medicals which they're steve simmons's report
about you talked about that or just it hasn't been filed with central registry yet because
of the cap situation yeah you know there's something going on behind the scenes where
it's not official with central registry the cap situation they're they're able to go over the cap
by like eight million 8.8 million i think is the number so like it wouldn't be that right but and
then the the filing with central registry and making an official also kind of can tie into
the medicals because until they get the official sign off on everything you know it's not going to
be official so it's not done yet because i saw some people say oh yeah they'll just ltir i'm
like i don't think that's allowed no can't just klingberg is one thing if uh he's a guy with an
injury history he gives it the old college try and gets in the lineup for 14 games and then it
turns out he can't do it you put him on ltir fine if hockey pot can just never play again
they're not going to be like oh yeah that's fine right oh yeah just ltir that don't worry about
the contract like this isn't going to be filed if he can't play hockey yes so i think yeah it's
definitely i think more of that side than opposed to like cap situation because yeah you can be over
the cap in in the summer all that stuff frank sorelli was talking about like caps or convention
we were all like ah blow it up your nose no no like that's capture you can't do that sign a guy
who can't play yeah yeah yeah it's one thing if they have a pre-existing contract and then you
trade them to the coyotes like what happened a thousand times happened with the leafs too
um you know clarkson and horton going back listen you can't just sign a free agent who's never
going to play again as i always say if you're going to get upset about cap overages you should
get just as upset as upset about cap underages no and the coyotes for the last decade have cheated
the nhl they have not in their fielded a base level roster no because they have contracts like
datsuk and pronger and whoever else they took on and and you know because pronger and datsuk were
coyotes somehow i don't think they ever once finished last place well that's their biggest
failing then uh should get a first overall way to win losers now uh so yanni hockinpah we'll see
what happens over the next few days but it seems like he's playing at this point and that you know
what he does i don't think it does i think he i think he is i think he's playing i think he's
playing i listen listen steve simmons is you can you can you can have your disagreements with steve
simmons opinion and i often have uh the guy's really connected i don't think that comes out
of nowhere exactly that's why i'm a little skeptical on i think he's talking about his
health people were pointing out um him disclosing that austin matthews had covid way back when
and bad business yeah well they're saying it though it is bad business i agree but they're
saying it like he was wrong about it no that wasn't the main criticism of it right it certainly
wasn't that he was wrong about it it's that it wasn't nice to say um so great point i have no
reason to be like oh well he's lying or he's his source is wrong um the fact that they haven't
announced this to me says there's legitimate concern it might not get done and the gm spoke
two out uh two days ago about this it's weird i will say this that some people were like oh well
philippe myers signed that must mean something about hawking but i don't think they're related
it at all yeah I think it's just oh here's Mermis good depth Myers good depth that Meyer you don't
go get like Yanni Hockenpah and Philly Myers are roughly the same size they are not the same player
no not exactly yeah Yanni Hockenpah though if he is playing uh I love the fact I love this for the
Leafs because you are going to have guys that are going to get banged up and you're going to need
guys to step in sure I'm still wondering what Cade Weber's camp is going to look like I'm really
curious about this guy isn't that interesting yeah you know because he's again defensive player
of the year in in the ncaa and listen i do i expect him to come in and be in the leafs top
six this year no but i think he's going to be a lot between he's going to be the marshall refi
and i like that a lot better bad for marshall refi we keep bringing him up no he's a great story
yeah but i want him to have a place and a lineup in the organization he's getting squeezed out by
all these signings.
Maybe Varubi loves him
and Keefe didn't, right?
Maybe.
Guys get hurt.
With the Hockenposs signing,
if you count that,
the Leafs have 10 defensemen
on the NHL portion
of their cap family page.
That's a lot of defensemen.
It is.
It also skews,
oh, the Leafs are over the cap.
Well, no, they're not
because 10 defensemen
and also three goalies.
Yeah.
But they don't have enough forwards.
It'll roughly even out
and they'll be in the,
they'll be within striking distance
of cap compliance.
Should I get a Marshall Refai jersey?
100%.
jesse jesse are you marshall jesse hi for for 500 okay what number did he wear
oh i know do you actually i think it's i think i got it but let jesse guess first
57 now i'm scared i don't know the answer i thought he was number five wasn't he oh is it
five five is retired how dare you how dare you who wore number five uh belroco was six i think
that was ace bailey oh i got do i have it reversed no oh damn it what is it do you want to try one
more time no no just tell me 83 oh yeah you had cody cc's number yeah oh god you took it from
cody's that cc's number i can't even remember that i'm so bad with that stuff um anthony
stollers as uh has done a media avail since we started the show uh so i hadn't had the chance
to obviously pull anything from it but one quote that's standing out that i think is getting a lot
to play i don't know how to stop pucks is actually quite the opposite here's what he said i know that
i'm one of the best in the world and i'm looking forward to the opportunity hot damn i'm excited
i i like that shit i i'm excited i've i've heard nothing but great things about the fan base it's
a very hungry and passionate fan base heard nothing but great things about the fan base
then you have not heard the whole story uh because we can't go tony we can be a little
harsh but Anthony Stoller save tone I know that I am one of the best in the world I'm looking
forward to that opportunity that is the kind of guy you want want playing here it's the way to
set the tone what the set the Tony yeah set the Tony way to good job yeah I like that and he's
got great numbers and he fought for games yet last year on a on a Stanley Cup winning team
kind of like this guy 2.5 million bucks which is less than I thought he would get frankly I think
that's the biggest contract of his career has to be like uh he's one of those like journeyman
goalies man right one of those guys making the nhl the hard way um but he's done well basically
the whole time you know his career reminds me a little bit a little bit of uh anton hudobin
um oh interesting yeah who was a very good goalie for a long time but i remember uh remember he was
having his his moment in the sun leading the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup final in 2020
and a lot of people were like Anton Hudobin and I sort of went through his career and he had some
good years with the Lightning he had some uh no it wasn't the Lightning um he had well he was a
journeyman and a sort of backup tandem guy and he kept finding himself in situations where um it
looked like he might get his opportunity some goalie passes him and you're like oh man who was
that and it's like tuka rask right oh who passed him now oh it's like and he just kept getting
pushed down by like some of the best guys of his generation and he finally got an opportunity to
start and he did pretty well right you know what i mean i'm not i'm not saying stolers is going to
start that would actually the season wouldn't have gone well if stolers ends up as the starter he is
gonna start a lot of games though he's gonna start a lot of games but like joseph wall this is
supposed to be his team you know what i mean yeah well i think anthony stollers is gonna push him
and that's why you get a guy like good um and he's young enough i think that that this guy could
emerge as a starter and if you have two guys emerging as a starter what a fantastic problem
to have now um the leafs still need to get a top six guy obviously they've completely remade the
defense uh but as anthony petrelli points out anthony who i think is one of the better leaf
reporters out there oh tone uh another tone uh he there's still time to get things done what he said
was essentially like listen listen they're better in goal yes they're better on defense wholeheartedly
agree with both they are missing a top six forward and true living said that in the media avail yep
if this is the starting lineup october 8th yes criticize them but like you got three months i
agree i agree how do you acquire that top six for that my friend is the question well people like
someone was uh tweeting to me yesterday they're like oh they got all the space and they're just
gonna go out and get tarasenko and or sprung and i'm like i think you're vastly underestimating how
difficult it is to sign free agents and also in less than 24 hours since that exchange it looks
like Tarasenko's gone yeah well it looks like he's going somewhere else I have I have some
interesting stuff on that so hold on to that okay go anywhere with that yeah I will but like okay
so let's say they uh they strike out on Tarasenko sure oh no all right well Daniel Sprung we'll go
to Daniel Sprung what if they strike out on Sprung what about Kevin LeBanc is he still available yeah
well then you can sign him to win a video game cup you don't think he fits on the Leafs not really
not like i'd rather go nize mcmahon on on the left so then what is your solution for a top
six forward if you strike out in free agency well you've tried to find your this year's bobby mcmahon
might even be bobby mcmahon you're absolutely hell-bent on not making significant changes
so because it's not a comp trade isn't getting you anything well uh ryan reeves trade isn't
getting you anything also if you trade comp you got to replace them exactly let's let's make a
team can you do the armchair gm thing on cat friendly or is this going to take too long
you know what let's not yeah let's not do that today well because we got other stuff we gotta
get one of the things i was talking about is like you know okay so you trade david camp you trade
cali yarn croak that frees up um 4.5 million yep except no it doesn't you have to replace those
players right so let like if you i think the number i came up with is if you replace both of
them with league minimum players that still only leaves you with or uh an added 2.95 million in
cap space and you're probably what are the odds you can replace camp and yarn croak and like it
Also have two players at least as good, if not better, for league minimum.
Can we also talk about the fact that I know Jarnkrok was injured a good chunk of last year,
but one of the most useful pieces in the Leafs forward group is Cal Jarnkrok.
Why do people all of a sudden want to get rid of him?
When did he become persona non grata?
He didn't have a very good playoff.
I'll definitely give him that.
But that guy's the Swiss army knife that they need.
He's like a 15-20 goal scorer.
Making 2.1 million.
Killing penalties.
Killing penalties, playing multiple forward positions.
he can play either wing and center if you really need him to what sorry when when did we start
trading this player yeah what are we talking about people are just looking at like okay so if
marner's not going to get moved which it looks like he's not comp although i still think they're
going to work on that i really truly believe that uh i would love to live in your world the the the
the thing for me is that um obviously we know jeff skinner who ultimately went to edmonton was right
there right like they were right there they wanted them they already swung and missed on a on a guy
so i i wonder too like the thing about it remember last year when stamp co showed up to camp
and he was all mad and he was pissed off yep once the rubber hits the road after labor day
uh things pop up things pop up players you know teams get into spats players become unhappy
you know it all happens so there's lots of time and to conceive of a trade right now
i think is difficult because you know everybody has spent the last 30 days literally all of june
was free agency month yeah has spent the last 30 days trying to put their their teams together and
i think the dust needs to settle settle a little bit i think a little monkey wrench and all that
is they don't know if hockinpah is going to play yeah that's why they haven't announced it yeah
and when you're so tight um you need an answer there before you get anything else done the
Leafs might be holding some stuff up
or players who they're speaking to
are just going to go,
eh, I'm going somewhere else.
Now, I want to throw something at you guys.
Call me crazy.
Hi, crazy.
I'm Steve.
But I actually think the Leafs are a lot better
as we stand right now
than they were last season.
I think the word a lot is doing a lot of work.
I do think they're better.
You've acquired the best defensive defenseman
at five on five.
They're better.
their decor is absolutely better their goaltending is goaltending is absolutely better goaltending
is way better i will and people who are worried and listen i was sad to see bertuzzi go i didn't
want to see him go they're off their their forward group is worse their forward group's worse okay so
here's the problem with that okay where did the leafs finish in total goals for last year
in the nhl sixth jesse any guesses total goals for yeah second is it not second yeah oh wow they
were four goals behind the avalanche for first yeah wow so if you lose 20 goals on where they
finished that still puts them seventh where the rangers were at 27 278 so what you're saying is
they had goals to give they have goals to give and if you can because here's the other problem
where do they finish in goals against 14th 20th 12th jesse oh so if you can wind that gap that
The delta between the two is about 36 goals, 261.
I hope my math's right on that.
And if it isn't, who cares?
It's probably 37, actually.
But my point is, if you can, let's say you give 20 goals on the,
let's say it's Bertuzzi and it's 20 goals.
And there's no way that you ever find that 20 goals,
although I think guys like Robertson, Cowan can step up and score some more.
I think Bobby McMahon playing more games is going to score more.
I think you can replace some of those
if you can get that goal total
down to 250
if you
can get the Leafs goal total in and around
285
that's a lot more wins
do me a favor where do the Leafs rank
in goals from
the 2020
2021 season
onward can you do that on the NHL
yeah I'll do it
Steve
this is gonna be awful podcasting okay fourth in total goals they're fourth in total goals
yeah and how successful have they been in the playoffs not yeah that's why i'm like okay if
they're great in the regular season again it doesn't mean anything right and think of all
the games that sammy was really bad last year that was like three months is it wrong to say
i don't give a flying fuck how different the team is in the regular season i don't fucking care i i
i think you should because it's going to be indicative of okay hold on bring it down no okay
i think it's going to be indicative of the there's going to be a change in play there's a change in
philosophy afoot craig berube is a different coach yes brad true living's a different general manager
and this defensive group as you said in your chris tana video yes this is the best right shot
defensive than they've had probably since you gave it by a country mile okay so best of riley's
career so yes in a vacuum i last year i would completely agree with that statement here's why
i don't this year the the ethos has changed we did not see change until truly until true living
kind of came in and even then he didn't really have a lot of time to make a change and he said
i don't like the blue line we got to remake the blue line he's remade the blue line there could
be listen is oel potentially overpaid maybe yes this year but i think when the cap goes up 12
million over the next three years i don't think people care um it'll be fine i think it's difficult
in a in a in a by the way in a cap culture like this where the cap is supposed to make gigantic
leaps barring some pandemic it's difficult to sign a bad deal it is because oh boy you're going up
potentially by 10 over the next three years that's a lot now if there's a lockout that completely
changes things i think we have to talk about this because with with the toronto maple leafs it does
matter this is a much different team than the kyle dubas years it is and and so if we're going to
look at that and if we if we are going to talk about how they're going to do in the playoffs
next year the only thing that we're going to know is whether or not they're scoring playoff style
goals by january and if they're scoring playoff style goals by january and they're gritty on
defense i have higher hopes that's why that's my reason for tuning in all right maddie if you want
to bring this up here this is the roster steve was asking for currently as the leafs are constructed
it's minus whatever forward that we think they need to add so you put abrazizi in because there's
no uh it's cowan or minton you need a left winger but i left abrazizi in there so for anybody
listening nize matthews kneelander mcmahon tavarez marner holmberg domi domi yonkrok
abrigesi comp and reeves and then on defense riley tanev oel lilligren mccabe hawkenpaw and
your extras are benoit and timmons here's what i would say that wool stallars wool stallars here's
what i would say because is that team cap compliant it is okay cool throw timmons in the garbage yeah
yeah he's not playing in the nhl this year yeah there's not a guy he's gonna be way so how much
space do they have right now they're at 86.7 million dollars as their cap it okay can you
know robertson would be that extra oh robertson isn't here because he doesn't have a contract
That would push Holmberg down on the left side, right?
Yeah, he'd be the extra winger.
Somebody would be there.
Is he right or left?
Maybe it's Nick.
He's both.
He's left-handed.
Nick, you want to drop to the scratch,
and then Robertson goes there.
So the Leafs...
Yeah, the other Nick.
The Leafs typically only have one spare.
This is how they get around being cap compliant.
Let's get rid of Abruzzese.
Throw him in the minor.
So that's Nick's, the other Nick's spot.
Yeah.
um throw them in the minors and let's give robertson like what's something that would
for sure get the the deal done i think a million million three five probably i was gonna oh okay i
was gonna say 1.5 let's give them 1.35 so are you able i'm just gonna put timmons there it's one
oh yeah i'm gonna it's 1.1 just for the sake of time and everything 150 grand is 1.1 put your
imagination that that's nick uh robertson he sure looks like him so there you go so it would be cap
compliant a million so that that would give them like 800 grand to spend yeah this whole oh yeah
they're gonna go out and spend on like a top set like with what where yeah i don't understand and
i think that i think the interesting thing is going to be to me a lineup like that with robertson
signed the glaring weakness up front is center you need a third line center so adam the the roster
you're talking about that you're confident in is going to be performing a little better next year
because they have this defense but the four groups looks like this are you talking they make an
adjustment to this forward group going into next season i think it will this lineup in particular
you're confident in well i i think they're going to make adjustments i think i everybody's saying
they need a winger i think they need a center and uh because i don't think max is a full-time center
what if you did holmberg yarn croak on the left domey on the right because domey played right wing
yeah it's fine i don't look a little that doesn't yeah holberg i like your whole work at center okay
right but that's not changing what we're talking about yeah yeah i think my my point is you're
you're getting way too into the lineup too granular i think my my point is is that i think
that they'll need uh what they hoped to be able to retain with a ryan o'reilly light like i don't
think they're going to get a ryan o'reilly player obviously but i think they're going to need that
and i think they got the summer to figure that out so how does that come about is it who comes
because somebody's come off the roster as we see with the roster currently constructed it's about
800 grand under the cap so well what what happens here to fit that player the obvious one for me is
is uh and i just said you know if you trade comp you got to replace him this in this scenario you
would yeah um to me david kopf has got to go the other way with whatever trade and maybe that
regard like listen david kopf is a very useful player people always kind of they give him shit
but like he's a good penalty killer he's a good defensive forward you can rely on him to not score
any offense but to do defensive things you can usually does well in the playoffs if i'm not
mistaken he was on the ice for the tying goal in game seven holmberg is a guy that i go okay
there's a fourth line center i feel like i feel comfortable with that you need somebody between
domey and yarn croak and they're worried about their penalty kill and they're gonna get rid of
david comp uh i don't know if they're as worried about it he's i think the problem with their
penalty kill was the defense david comp is like schrodinger's penalty killer like he's he's
important to their penalty kill and also their penalty kills bad yeah that's that's and i don't
think the forwards were the issue i think the the if we look at who's goaltending i i well
goaltending absolutely but i also look at how many times are they going to throw tj brody out there
and watch him get caved and and it's not tj's fault he had a brutal offseason well it is it's
it's it's unfortunately the people are saying tj brody fell off i'm i'm a little more bullish on
that guy i think he's in chicago now uh tj brody wherever he signed and and i think he'll be good
there but i feel like your 3c is the big opening and if you can find somebody i don't know if there
are how many free agencies or free agents there are left but if you can find somebody that can
push for a two or a 4c or a 3c on this team you can't have conf at 3c you can't the one one thing
i will say that's going to help them offensively is they have better puck movers on the back end
now agreed uh tanf can move it although oh we all can move it you probably put the puck on riley
stick more oel can move it lilligran can move it and i see benoit mccabe's being the third pairing
with hawk and paw as the extra yeah trading lilligran would open things up well you know
what's interesting so he's signed a three mil like just now and i'm like well i guess you're
not trading them that's not what cj said on the most recent uh episode of the chris johnston show
he talked about how they're still trying to do it i think by the way enjoy this while it lasts
because we got two more days of this website then it's gone yeah i think what about lilligren is
that three million dollar term for a right shot defenseman who's his age and could have upside
has a lot of value uh you the anaheim ducks are still 8.8 under there are moves coming guys
under the ceiling or the floor the floor so there are moves coming and and i think anaheim is going
to do the smart thing and they're going to weaponize that cap space if we get closer to camp
uh and so you know i see a couple of guys their camps contract is it's tough for a fourth line
center on this team with this structure to do it it's just too much um timothy lilligren i i
actually like him on the leafs defense uh because he moves a puck and this is a guy are you putting
marner on defense what are you doing um but i i do think the team is better i think it's incomplete
though now they need a centerman matthew's in that matthew's second line right wing no put him
on the babcock and put him on right wing the fourth line didn't play didn't get off the
ice fast enough that's hot uh so so that's how i feel about it right now i was up there a long time
yeah now there's a couple of things that i think you'll find interesting around the nhl but before
we get to that i want to do one last thing here reported yesterday that uh by nick caprios that
Tavares could have
I hate the way that this is framed
Tavares could have his
captaincy stripped
stripped means
he did something wrong and
yeah when
Joe Thornton gave up his captaincy I think
it was to Patrick Marleau or was it the other way around
Thornton to Marleau
that now you got me confused
and they played and it doesn't matter
because they played really great before and they played really great
after and almost won the cup a couple times right
got to game six just couldn't get it done there is precedent for this happening and i can remember
specifically that uh when doug gilmore was traded uh wendell clark was back on the leafs that that
next season and they gave the captaincy to matts and wendell was there to hand him the jersey
and you know even though wendell was he was an assistant captain he wasn't the captain
um there are precedents for handing things over and i i look at this and i've said this for two
years now this is the face of the franchise i think austin matthews is the emotional leader
of this team now he's one of the faces of the league you'll be honest he's in everything but
it really matters the captaincy matters to the team 100 right it's like are we are we are we
like oh my god like lowry's one of the faces that lowry is a is a um kyle kyle not kyle
lowry adam lowry adam lowry from winnipeg oh i thought he was the captain okay and but he's an
emotional leader for that team i think when you look at the way the leafs played with austin
matthews in the lineup versus without especially in the playoffs there is this team moves around
austin now yes he is a man now he's not a boy and i feel like and i have felt like for more than a
year that it's time i do think however i want to caution people from from going john tavaris was
stripped this is a passing of the torch john has played six great seasons in toronto he's been
valuable in the playoffs he's been a point a game guy or plus and it's this is not I think this is
just the way things evolve I don't see it as a negative against John Tavares it's the number
people can't see past the number if John Tavares you know here you go Austin and makes a big deal
of passing the torch to him I'll view it that way and that's the way it should happen if Tavares
doesn't want that to happen I'm gonna view it the way Kipper framed it which is he was stripped
but I don't think John is that kind of guy
Kiprios just so we're quoting him right never said
the word stripped no other
the aggregator accounts are the
ones that say son of a gun
in the quote
he said contemplating
taking the captaincy away from DeVars and putting
it on Austin like that which is
very literal yeah which is
just describing the act of
removing the captaincy so he didn't
imply that it would be a
contentious situation so who the hell did
the twitter accounts that yeah what made it go viral yeah yeah so that dude navigating this
stuff is so freaking well i'm consuming and hard it is because you you look at the aggregator
account which will pop up and it's designed to get a lot of clicks and then you go to the source
material and you're like oh that's not what was said i'm so much more gun shy after the mlh stuff
too oh like i'm just listen we all should be okay i need i need three different accounts of people i
could literally text to confirm this news before i believe it and that and that's that's because
verification means nothing that's responsible it's good yeah uh but i look at this and i think it is
time but i don't i'm i'm not a person that thinks oh john tavaris is bad i think john tavaris signed
a contract that we all knew by the end of it he would have slowed down a little bit and a guy
that's still scoring mid 70s and points listen is he overpaid by a couple mil sure yeah but
chandler stevenson who i don't think has ever got to 70 points just got like what eight and a half
or whatever it was i don't think john tavaris is a bad player i think he's a bad person oh sorry
sometimes i just like to reset you i just like to reset everyone so when when they talk about
this remember he's a great person remember it is austin matthews time to be the captain i agree
uh this guy just signed a five-year extension to be here if not now then when uh you don't just
wait until john's contract expires to give it to austin to save john's feelings that's not the nhl
austin matthews is the face of this franchise he's the best player that's ever played here
end of story it also time it also helps limit a distraction for this upcoming year because you've
got a your captain doesn't have a contract yeah yeah i think there'll be an extension there
if i'm not i kind of think you're right and i think why not you know the the lightning we're
looking at going uh what eight times three with Stamkos or eight times I said if they got eight
times four I'm sure they would have got him um if you go super long term with John and you keep
that AAV down and go John listen we want to keep you around but we see you moving down and
potentially I think John Tavares ultimately ends his career on the wing with some defensive zone
like he'll still be a great face-off guy but I don't think he's got the speed to keep up
yeah um you know that is a three or four million dollar winger and a hundred million dollar cap
world to hurt you no um and i like john tavares he's a good person he's been a great captain i
don't have a problem with him retiring a leaf i don't either i in fact hope it happens and
not at 11 i look at this guy and i'm like listen this is the best captain we've had since matt's
left he's well one of two guys low bar but i'm talking about assistant captains in that too
right this is a this guy was a a leader uh there are parts about john that drove drive me a little
nuts like i looked at jesse in game three when we were at the you know boss thing and he got
ragdolled and didn't react and didn't i'm like it would no one reacted for him it would yeah but it
would be nice if he showed some emotion sometimes but that's not john not in him yeah and so you
can't take 11 million dollars off but could you find a better person a better citizen a guy that
like this guy really and truly has been a great captain and i think you build on that john was
this is a captain austin understands hey this is what it takes to be the leafs captain i'm going
to build on that even further that's how you build a good culture uh we wiped our culture out here
some people have been talking about like the difference between like why is marner getting
run out of town in trade scenarios and not tavaris what am i supposed to do get mad at
tavaris for being exactly what we expected him to be as this contract aged yeah like here we are
heading into year seven and like is anyone shocked he's on no this is exactly but he and how bad is
the decline been no 10 points is that is that the worst the guy well he started points to 75 points
oh no he started at 47 goals which set the bar i know no no but what i'm what i'm saying it like
he had literally never scored 40 goals yeah because he played with martyr yeah yeah and then he played
with martyr and 47 goals martyr was like here you go john here you go john here you go john
Where's my contract?
Here it is.
Okay, thank you very much.
I'm going to sign that.
Since John Tavares joined the Toronto Maple Leafs
in the entirety of all of those years,
he's 18th in goals scored amongst NHLers.
That's not bad.
He's also almost a point a game.
He's 0.95 points per game.
Boom!
419 points in 440 games.
He has 419 Leaf points.
And let's be honest,
if it hadn't been for the half-decade of flat cap,
which happened because of the pandemic,
Like, contract probably looks fine.
So I look at this and I go, okay, it is time.
But that doesn't denigrate John Tavares,
and I still think he's going to be with the team long-term.
Hey, this episode is brought to you by BetterHelp.
And let me say this.
It is the season for – I keep saying it's the season of reflection.
It's the season of going, hey.
Because to me, the real new year is September.
100%.
You go back to school.
Businesses get back.
Yeah, that's the real new year.
What calendar is that?
this is the adam wild this is the adam wild calendar the greco adam calendar if you're
going by the greco adam calendar there you go we go we start we start right after labor day
whatever day that is in september right and you and that's when your real new year starts because
it's school hot you know training camp for hockey so for us i'm like well that's when we're gonna
be back from vacation so you got the next two months to go basically those two things how do
i want my next year to go how do i want my next year to go september to september well not a lot
people go on vacation in september right and then it's you know thanksgiving in october and then
november is a blah month and and then you you look at the american thanksgiving in november you're
like god i wish we had that and then it's christmas like squidward yeah it's christmas and then the
fake new year right then fake new year yeah so my point is how do you want those how do you want
that year to go how do you want your september to august year to go right and this is the chance to
have a look, maybe do a little deep dive and check yourself out at betterhelp.com slash sdp.
10% off your first month. Go to betterhelp.com slash sdp to get signed up. Now, one of the
things that I think you'll find interesting is there was a season ticket email that went out to
Penguins season ticket holders about what to get excited about this year. And weirdly enough,
It didn't mention Mac Rizlik or Kevin Hayes or Mac Halliwell,
but it did mention Vladimir Tarasenko.
What?
A couple of major updates to kick off the week.
Ned is back.
Vladimir Tarasenko is a penguin.
Six new prospects have blah, blah, blah, blah.
And then it goes into home opener against the New York Rangers.
November is, because of Thanksgiving, stuffed with home games.
Catch the number one overall pick.
Macklin, Celebrini and the Sharks, November 16th, Defending Cup champions, Florida, December.
So here's the thing.
Did someone just make a mistake?
I checked in on this.
And according to our friend of the show, Jesse Marshall, Penguins reporter, they have several versions of this ready to go.
Oh, no.
Someone accidentally clicked send because if you notice, Macklin Celebrini has not signed with the Sharks yet.
So to say that he'll be there November 16th is erroneous.
Right.
So this was a pre-prepared email and somebody accidentally pressed send.
And so it sent Penguins Twitter into a bit of a tizzy.
But in actuality, there was somebody who took a picture of why is Vladimir Tarasenko the only player that ever gets a picture taken of him on an airplane?
Because this happened last year when it was between Carolina and Ottawa.
But he's apparently on a plane to Dallas right now with his hockey sticks.
That doesn't mean he's signing a contract there.
It could just be practice.
But Penguins gave what you pay for.
Well, so they did.
It is.
It's noticeable.
or notable that and we mentioned this before fenway sports and entertainment fired 16
long-time employees a lot of vps uh one of them people think uh one of the head of sales jack
tipton who's been there for years and another uh somebody that that we know is andy perlman
yeah and andy has been there she was there the entire all their cup run basically the entire
crosby era and was ahead of the ahead of the marketing team and ahead of the team that did
their social media which was so good and and it's noteworthy that this mistake happens like within
months of them doing that and and i think that that is andy's uh especially really surprising
uh she was one of i don't understand it uh i don't i don't get it either you know it's hard
to understand the inner workings of a corporation when you don't work there uh but uh andy is one
of those people that i think will end up back in the nhl and doing a great job and um i think this
stuff happens when you have new people yeah when you it's not mistakes not they replaced one person
they blew out departments yeah mistakes happen that's so there's no continuity that's a bad one
yeah i was like oh shit did they break news why did he sign that oh he didn't sign there now i
want to play you guys something from the cj show regarding steven stamkos oh because this has been
and jesse i'm going to send this over to you um if you go to 2340 of the it should autoplay when
I sent it to you, Jesse, but 2340, uh, Steve, Jesse, or sorry, Jesse, um, Chris outlines
something that I had completely forgotten about Stephen Stamkos and his contract negotiations
with the lightning throughout the years.
And this makes Nate Thompson's tweet about how the lightning did stammer dirty a lot
more plausible in my mind.
Have a listen to this.
This, this was hard for him.
you know i don't think i think he feels a little disrespected you know he didn't say that but it's
implied and i'll give you some facts here julian when steven stamkos's entry-level contract ended
way back when i believe it was in 2010 2011 something like that he became an rfa like he
played out all three years of the elc and for 17 days he was an rfa before getting his next deal
so he had to wait victor headman his first deal he's extended seven months before it ended
comes to stephen stamp coast the end of his second deal we all remember this he got into
that free agent window that used to happen he peeked behind the curtain he resigns with tampa
two days before he could be a ufa victor headman after his second deal we didn't even get to the
end of it he got a full year out he got an extension here we are stephen stamp coast went
right down to this last week at least having discussions with the lightning ultimately isn't
re-signed victor had been 355 days before he could be a ufa is re-signed and so i'm not saying
there aren't reasons for it but he has been treated quite differently than the man who was
picked second overall in 2009 than the one who was picked first overall in 2008 they're tremendous
buddies stamkos had had been lifelong friends uh had so much success together but you know if
you're stamkos i think you're looking around going like what gives here you know everybody
else gets prioritized and they've played hardball with them three straight times and ultimately
let them walk out the door this time so you know i think you'll quickly pivot now
uh so you know cj is so so damn good at what he does does that make that makes it feel a little
bit more human doesn't it it does it does 100 and oh man cj said something else um stamkos has
been with the lightning for more than half of the lightning's existence that i couldn't wrap my brain
around that i couldn't i couldn't wrap my brain around that at all because the lightning have
been there for basically my whole life my whole life that i can remember and he's been there for
more than half of it i guess i'm having a hard time realizing stamkos is that old because he's
younger than me and it makes me sad i i think when you look at the like three times in a row
thing that that is well listen steven i'll tell you something you know a team that wouldn't have
treated you like that as the toronto maple uh but the the the fact that this guy who did so much
uh ends up with that um kind of sucks and people were saying you know the headman deal when it was
announced um oh that's exactly what that looked exactly like what stamkos's deal in nashville
had to you know the way the more i think about this the more i'm looking at it like
julian briseois we should have read into what he said in september the lightning had no real
intention of bringing this player back unless he was going to take outrageously below market value
they had no interest they made that clear they didn't call him last summer they offered him
eight times three sorry three times eight three million a year times eight years okay crazy um
and and i get why they'd want to do that but that it comes down to that's how they value him
they value him at a million dollars a year more than they were paying tanner janelle
and and and and so when we said on free agency day and you guys could correct me if I'm wrong here
oh well getting the McDonough deal really got in the way of the Stamkos deal I think that they
were never serious about bringing no never never I don't think McDonough has anything to do with
that and I think Sergeyev posting what he posted on his Instagram after he got traded which was a
picture of Stamkos and himself uh in the Stanley Cup finals at a press conference together um
I think Sergeyev is stung too and surprised
because if you're Sergeyev, you're like,
you replaced me with McDonough?
You traded me to Utah?
You could have just kept me and left McDonough.
I think there's also some worry there with some players.
Well, like, I mean, you sign in Utah.
I mean, you did that of your own volition.
You get traded to Utah.
I think there's some worry there with players
because who do you ask about how good it is?
Hey, do you like it?
what's it like how are the fans how's the how's the commute to the practice rink how's what what
are the facilities like you don't know you might have done a tour you didn't really use them not
the way that you do during a season right that's gotta at some point all great sports teams fall
apart and like the last dance you know it's crazy um one of the craziest things about that
documentary is the fallout where the man who put that team together and subsequently tore it apart
after gets booed posthumously he's a dead man getting booed in the city he brought six
championships and it's his wife that has to take it oh my god like just so brutal um listen jerry
kraus was wrong about them and their competitive window we know that but he did also put them
together they won six chips how bad of a job did he do you know and like it we're watching the
warriors held on to that thing for as long as they possibly could and now it's hard play thompson's
in dallas now and brisebois is breaking apart the lightning before it becomes hard to watch
um you know what but though i want to say this i think that he shortened their window by bringing
mcdonough in and moving circuit chev out if headman is an eight million dollar defense which by the
way what a great deal for the lightning and man i'm angry about it let me be salty i know he's
getting older but this guy's a fantastic hockey player for four years yeah they'll live uh we'll
live um bringing mcdonough in moving surrogate chev out shortens the window that's that's what
i think i think unless i mean listen they got that kid from utah mott no what's his jj moser
jj moser jj moser i think is uh he's getting the arizona treatment people don't realize how good
he is and uh again i can't remember if it's morgan or connor geeky it's morgan geeky morgan geeky is
a really good prospect for them like i don't think people are appreciating how well tampa did in that
trade right so i know they lost so here's the question that i have for you guys is there a
better way if stamp coast was gonna go what's the humane way of saying steven i think our time
together has has come to an end after this season or do you say it to him after the season
trading up last year trading him about a year ago trading him well it's that or you lose him for
nothing but who are you gonna get i'm talking about the main way to deal with steven who's
brought so much to your franchise right i guess i guess the thought process again again these teams
should have never let vegas win the stanley cup they made a huge mistake letting vegas win the
stanley cup because all these gms got to sit there and they got to watch all those guys carry
the cup around the ice there goes ltar stone carrying that around the ice there goes jack
eichel who forced his way there there goes the goalie who replaced mark andre flurry who was
traded for nothing you know oh there's the gm hoisting it above his head what did i do wrong
and or what did they do right right and vegas the only reason we're not still talking about them
like they're super villains is because they won a lot of people still don't like them but they won
and they won a little on or a little over a year ago so even though they didn't do so great in this
year's playoffs they still got that recent win glow no one should have let the tampa bay lightning
win because julian brisebois won he wants to get back to winning and he's like that's what i got
to do to win hey listen the vegas golden knights learned that from the lightning of course and yes
because they're like you know ltir making memes and shirts lol you know each shit doesn't matter
that i didn't play all season i'm still gonna put up over 30 points in the playoffs um julian
Breesbaugh saw that and he took lessons from it Chris Drury it's been to the final four twice in
recent years hasn't gotten over the hump and he's like you know what I gotta be a little more
ruthless about this so he puts Barkley Goodrow on friggin waivers and he might do the same to his
captain yeah and there's more to that story which we will get to yeah and who negotiated a no trade
in good faith because he values his wife's career what a what an asshole right are we getting into
that story we will in a minute i've got you're not you didn't read the full story no no no yeah
i want to hear i want to hear that you know from a true gm jesse blake how do you handle this in a
humane way because everybody's like man the lightning did stamkos wrong and the and the
and the outpouring is they should have just kept him okay so what if they had they feel they have
to move on from this guy how could they have handled the exit better yeah julian breezewell
is not paid to care about people's feelings on the surface i think like you should have cared
about his feelings greatest player in franchise history everything he's done he leads every
category in franchise stats i think there should have been more care with that situation but that's
not why julian briseois has his job his job is to put on a competitive team on the ice and try and
win a stanley cup and he doesn't believe that a 34 year old going forward is the right person he
wants in his top six forward group he's going to give a long-term deal to that wasn't on the table
for briseois because he wants to win a stanley cup and he'd rather have jake genzel there so
from julian briseois perspective in terms of what he did like you can't help but just shrug and say
okay he did what he did from a job perspective he did what he thought was best to win which is what
his job is from a person to human human standpoint you should definitely have more care with your
greatest player in franchise history it does be more conversation there throughout the year about
where his standing is in in terms of your eyes in the competitive window and i think that stamkos
is gonna now he's got this chip on his shoulder he's gonna try and make julian briswell wrong
when he goes to nashville be the oldest player to score 50 goals or whatever or ovechkin probably
holds well him and marsha so are going to be great to watch marshy is a same thing as a franchise
day one guy from vegas who he said objectively they never put a serious offer in front of me
One thing I'll say for Tampa, you know,
oh, you got to be ruthless and then you win.
You know how coaches lose a room?
GMs can lose a room.
Yeah.
And I don't believe, like Julian Breezewald believes
that getting rid of Stamkos, bringing in Gensel,
getting rid of Sergachev, bringing McDonough,
bringing Moster and all these moves makes the team better.
I'm not convinced of that.
I don't know that they're any better.
I don't know that, I mean, listen,
a full year of Vasilevsky might help.
Well, they had Vasilevsky when they needed him,
which is the playoffs and it wasn't successful like they weren't as good as florida and i don't
believe on paper right now this team next year in the year forward is any better than the 24
tampa bay lightning i think what he did this off season made them it was more of a lateral move i
believe they're exactly kind of where they were in the power rankings of the league on on bringing
mcdonough back name the last team to win a cup with the player lose that player not win the
Chicago Blackhawks.
And then bring him back.
Yeah, the Blackhawks with who?
Because the Blackhawks tried to get the band back together
with like Brandon Saad.
It didn't work.
No.
That's why I think the McDonough thing is so positive.
The Blackhawks with Chris Versteeg, I'm pretty sure.
This feels like late stage Chicago Blackhawks moves.
We've already seen Tampa Bay lose the last two playoffs
in the first round.
Do we all forget that this team, it's been two years
since they've made it past the first round?
i think they're better set for the future but yes i i think if you're projecting into the deep
futures of you have a 34 year old who you wanted to give eight million eight years three million
dollars like that makes sense but like giving him the contract he got from nashville doesn't make
them competitive two years from now having genzel does but i also don't think that they're so much
better than the team last year that they're like stanley cup windows back open i think it's a
lateral move and they're just as good as they were last year where they're a playoff team who could
win a couple rounds but they're not a stanley cup threat uh yeah let's fast he stands on his head
well and i like all he can just prove you i'd like to see what jake genzel does with kucherov
like that's gonna be kind of or braden point whichever well and like a non-surgically
repaired vasilevsky starting yeah yeah like from fresh from camp yeah i mean it will it
remain to be seen now we are running out a little bit of time but i will say this on truba uh this
from the new york post uh larry brooks has been all over this when truba signed his current seven
year 56 million dollar contract in july 2019 after having been acquired as a pending restricted free
agent from winnipeg his five-year no movement clause was designed to expire in conjunction
with his wife kelly tyson truba's completion of her three-year residency at a new york hospital
but dr tyson truba's residency was deferred for a year at the start of the program uh which she
is required to complete and will instead end july 1st 2025 the trubas also welcomed their first child
a boy named axel in mid-january i believe that's the reason why it was it was um uh there is no
guarantee jake truba would accept a trade uh to even a club on his approved list if that means
leaving his wife and his nine month old as of training camp his kid is will not be nine months
old as of training camp like that's crazy uh if dr tyson truba can pick up transfer her credits to
another hospital and accompany her husband and still be licensed as a physician you think about
that like you have a four month old as of today uh how do you feel how do you feel about moving
across north america oh fuck no right no even with all the money in the world the human side of it is
that's a lot and i can understand why he's doing that um and i also wonder okay so the new york
rangers now they move him now they still got to replace that and i almost wonder if it's just
better to hold back and just have them you know you got rid of barclay goudreau's contract you
you struck out on patrick kane because i think detroit went the extra million or half million
or whatever on the one-year deal um i mean didn't he play with a broken foot or yeah yeah or
something like that like is it is it that bad i understand having a right shot defenseman on your
third pair because out of fox and schneider are ahead of him yeah is a bit of a luxury but
i don't know it seems like a good luxury yeah it's an expensive luxury i understand why jury
wants to get him gone boy like i mean i before i had kids i was always like i'm not gonna let
having kids change my perspective yeah i said that and i can't help but look at that situation
and go fuck that's hard it does it clouds my judgment on lots of things and as it should like
i look at tavaris like oh fuck he's got three kids yep i look at marner i'm like i just got married
and like and marner has every the exact same amount of rights as john tavaris and jacob
truba is the same amount of rights as someone who doesn't have kids yep it's i can't help
but look at that situation and go dude that sucks i you know some years have passed i didn't have
any kids at the time but i look at like what happened with john uh scott and um his recently
born or maybe even unborn at the time twins and then he was traded as part of the effort to screw
him into the all-star game and i go jesus that's ruthless and it's something they didn't have to do
yeah it was your buddy colin so so with this story that that goes all viral yesterday at the
new york post and all that stuff i felt like nobody read the story because in the story they
say sources report that communication between truba his camp and jury and management have been
professional without animosity that would infect or negatively impact the defenseman's role as
captain if nothing further develops it might become a one sentence q a the first day of training camp
And then they also followed up, we are told that the suggestion Trouba rejected the deal is not true.
So it was just a story about Trouba's wife and her residency and how it could possibly impact everything.
But they also said in their own reporting, and Adam, what is the New York Post?
I mean, their sports is actually really, really good.
But they are tabloidy.
Their sports, though, has a lot of credibility.
They're a tabloid more than anything in terms of the other parts of the paper.
and it's a story great but it's also a local story to the new york market about the famous
captain of the rangers and his wife who just won but the most famous captain's leadership award
exactly and then but the oh yeah the hockey reporting within there is that there's no
animosity between drury and his camp and truba everything's cool and that he didn't actually
reject a trade to destroy oh so what's the hockey story here i think i think the hockey story is
that i think that there was i think they approached him about it and say would you accept something
and he said no not i don't think they had a deal worked out with detroit i don't know where the
detroit thing factors into this i don't know i don't know but i do think the fact that communication
here's the sentence for me on there that really is that brooksie that's got that uh i'm not
that's what i'm saying brooks so if the fact that there is we're talking about the communication
between the the the yeah so if larry brooks is saying the communication between truba's camp
and the rangers has been professional that doesn't mean difficult information was not conveyed it
just means they weren't saying fuck you to each other and by the way in the nhl that's pretty
normal to say fuck off and then hang up and then talk to each other if there's not a hockey trade
out there like i don't think jury's gonna make it just to get rid of true but i think true but
can also be a very useful player still for the new york rangers if they go to camp and he's their
third pairing defenseman or second pair like it's fine it also doesn't surprise me in the least
that it's been professional because jacob truba is like so many hockey players a monster of a
human being on the ice and just a real good guy yeah he's just kind of nice and i think i think
that this may end up working in the rangers favor we could be talking about hey aren't they glad
they didn't get rid of him i think i really do i think this guy's i think they over we overdo what
happened in the third round and forget how much of a weapon this guy has been he was busted like
i think we're grossly i think we're looking at his playoff performance especially his late playoff
performance and we're like that's what he is that's the beginning middle and end of it and
i just don't think that's true is he worth eight million probably not no not at this point no uh
that's what one more year seven right six is he worth five you know uh is this a door worth
opening sure is it a door worth kicking him through that i don't think so yeah i we'll see
i just didn't like the piling on to truba and his family or drury and him being a giant asshole when
it seemed like none of that really happened yep like truba is like his wife is preventing him
for being traded and all this like that didn't happen and jury didn't kick him out the door on
waivers like none of that happened here it was a story about his life that's very interesting
because the peek behind the window on hockey players and troopers specifically but nothing
really transpired here so the biggest story with the rangers right now involves a player's wife
are the rangers the real nhl no no they're the rangers that that market is huge and they care
about their team when the team's doing good so they're not the real not the real nhl all right
welcome to the not real nhl new york um you no longer get to have a rivalry rivalry with new
jersey because they're not um or no wait the rangers and leafs are not the real nhl yes the
devils are the real nhl so you're no longer in the same league as the devils yeah they're real
just people like care um so they don't have as much fans see you in the final real losers
shelvin keith gets to play the leafs on the second day of uh the stanley cup stanley cup the regular
season beginning which is cool i love that who at the league offices did the leafs piss off with
that friggin schedule everyone all the time they they start with three games and four nights one
of them is a back-to-back uh with travel on the road and uh i believe they lead the league with
16 back-to-backs this season boy they always have that's a lot fuck off what happened there good
think you got Stoller's yeah no you're gonna need I'm not kidding uh the Leafs open the season
Wednesday October 9th against Montreal in Montreal then they travel to New Jersey to play
Sheldon Keefe and the Devils on a back-to-back on Thursday October 10th and the Saturday Hockey
Night in Canada first night Sidney Crosby comes to town uh and Kyle Dubas Adam's favorite human
being ever I like Kyle Dubas I just think he's done a silly job with the pens you hate all his
moves uh comes to town on october 12th then they get three days off they play the kings rangers
lightning all at home and with travel they play home the lightning and then they go to columbus
which is weird so two back to backs with travel in the first one two three four five six seven
games yeah neat they also have that weird stretch where they have uh one game in six days in
november where they the they play the oilers on saturday november 16th and then they don't play
until they play the golden knights on wednesday is that a way november no that's a home game
that rules for them dude so after that game against washington you're at home for like two
weeks yeah that's actually nuts so you come home on the november 14th and you don't leave until
november 26th but why would it not be better to move some of these back-to-backs like the detroit
eight nine november game to like the 22nd no yeah i don't know you need to play a thousand
backs the least schedule this season is going to be really wonky for us and you steve and all
these fans okay themselves important question because i haven't looked up the answer to this
yet when is the western canadian road trip when is the california road trip the california road
trip's worse because the western canadian road trip usually has a hockey night in canada game
which is at seven i can tell you in a moment the california one is awful i find it here we go it's
usually like san jose screws it up with the 10 30 game this isn't so bad because we get a saturday
tuesday thursday saturday so the least play edmonton in edmonton on saturday february 1st
and then they go to calgary on tuesday thursday seattle and then vancouver the next saturday so
So you avoid a couple really late starts by having the two Saturdays in the Western road trip.
And then that huge gap must be the four nations.
This is four nations face off the 9th to the 21st.
The Leafs are off for a solid two weeks there.
All right.
And then you want the bad news.
When's California?
The Vegas San Jose trip.
Actually, they split it up here.
So they're doing the Vegas, Colorado, Utah trip in early March.
Steve, your birthday.
That's right.
they don't play on my birthday this year yeah that's right and and more importantly isla will
be probably sleeping full nights at that point yeah man steve will be able to stay up late and
not be dead the next day so yeah pretty stoked they're doing the the vegas colorado utah trip
in the same month of march that they're doing the san jose kings ducks trip so it'll be a 10 30
seven and eight on march 27 29th and 30th you know what though adam as the california road
trip goes that's good pretty good it's usually it's usually a bad back-to-back there that's
all right but it's not looking at it's not the 10 10 10 no it's nice i'm looking at that going
okay i'm gonna be a sleepy boy on the 28th and on for that show and that's it that's it you know
what we're good we're good so that's why you get all those back-to-backs because they made the
canadian and california road trips less shit they're so bad every freaking year they're so bad
yeah i don't want to complain because i work at the toy store but i like sleeping
do you know the first date shelving keith comes to town christmas i don't know no i don't know
i don't know if that's my head anyways moving oh it's december 10th nope that's a road game
No, never mind.
Should I make a video?
I'm going to make a video.
It's January 6th.
You should do a schedule release video.
Here are the fun dates.
January 16th.
First time Sheldon Keefe comes to town.
We got to wait a while.
Boo.
He's going to get a good tribute video and he should.
Oh, yeah.
Winning his coach and Leafs franchise history by percentage.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
I'm sure he's up there and wins with everybody.
Yeah.
I don't know what it is.
gotta be like pat quinn and uh probably he wasn't here long enough i don't pat quinn was six years
no no uh keith oh yeah no no i i think quinn was would be in there and i think uh what's his name
the guy who was was there quite a while who was the really tough guy that they brought back in
the 70s and he couldn't coach anymore but he was like their coach in the 50s imlac imlac do you
wanna we do you wanna play this to leave i think i think it's punch i think it's punch is number
one give me give me your top two give me your top three oh no there you go give me your top three
your top three every correct answer is a point i'm going to say punch pat and uh pat burns steve
yeah punch him lack number one
paquin number two and pat burns number three i think you got it okay you guys both die at two
it is punch let me get there let me get there punch at number one with 365 wins in 760 games
pat quinn at number two 300 wins exactly in 574 games and then third place all-time wins
least coach list hap day with 259 wins in 4 565 games shelvin keith is fifth on the list at 212
and babs is ahead of babs yeah cool i can't believe ron wilson is in the top where's paul
oh he was there for there he is there he is there he was he was there for two years underneath king
clancy he was a leaf coach for five man something that that is not talked about enough like when
the least released their 100 best players over their first 100 years it was so lacking in star
power and you look at the leafs coaching and two of your top five are 1940 and 1930 like the leafs
have had leaf fans like when you compare to like montreal the lack of talent that has come through
toronto montreal scotty bowman yeah right like and you know like it's just like every decade
montreal is producing multiple hall of famers whereas toronto is just like i guess you were
here like it's it's just it's really bad and and i think it's nice that this era at least in the
regular season has created some amazing new records because holy shit they're thin wasn't the the
legend like sometime in the 70s the leafs were going to get scotty bowman as the gm and and i
want to say don cherry is the coach yes or something like that but don had already signed
with colorado and he didn't want to renege on that deal even though it was his dream to coach
the Toronto Maple Leafs choice that he went to Colorado think which was a pretty dumb choice
in retrospect the landscape of just everything in this country changes yeah oh my yeah like
especially because that Colorado team were a joke they were so bad and they were never going to get
better um so it's uh it's kind of crazy it's kind of crazy so you know what we'll wrap the show
there there's a lot of stuff that we need to get to the Blackhawks reinstatement because we didn't
get to that oh yeah do you want to talk about that yeah let's do it uh so uh as you know stan
bowman and uh joel quinville are now allowed to coach and to general manage uh the um anywhere
anywhere the um edmonton oilers are linked to stan bowman jeff jackson was uh non-committal
although he did say he doesn't want to be the general manager he had a good he had a good
july 1st though and we didn't get to break down edmonton's july 1st but i i would like to on
friday they did a really there's a bunch of stuff actually we didn't get to today and that's just
the way it goes so if you're if you're commenting you're going oh my god is that so i mean so biased
against my team but don't worry you know how the comments go that's how they sound but let me uh
let me read the message from the nhl because they sent out this uh press release the national on
july 1st yeah as everybody's in the middle of free agency it was ridiculous the national hockey
League today announced that effective immediately, Stan Bowman, Al McIsaac, Joel Quenville are
eligible to seek employment in the NHL. For more than the last two and a half years, these
individuals have been ineligible to work for any NHL team as a result of their inadequate response
upon being informed in 2010 of allegations that Blackhawks player Kyle Beach had been assaulted
by the club's video coach. While it is clear that at the time their responses were unacceptable,
Each of these three individuals has acknowledged that and used his time away from the game to engage in activities which not only demonstrate sincere remorse for what happened, but also evidence greater awareness of the responsibilities that all NHL personnel have, particularly personnel who are in positions of leadership.
Moreover, each has made significant strides in personal improvement by participating in a myriad of programs, myriad of programs, many of which focused on the imperative of response to responding in effective and meaningful ways to address alleged acts of abuse.
the league accepts that they will continue this commitment to any future capacity with the nhl
and or our clubs while clubs are free to discuss potential employment opportunities uh effective
immediately they will not be permitted to enter into new employment relationships with any of
these individuals until or after july 10th right when everybody's on vacation uh and by the way
interesting that it happens at like 10 30 on free agency day all the remorse stuff would hold a
little bit more weight if you didn't have like family members of these people going on twitter
going he didn't even do anything which uh that's quenville quenville's had people online um i i
look at some chicago-centric takes um from that news breaking and i think that matters um uh
because all this happened in chicago so mark lazarus said we want people to learn from their
mistakes to grow from their mistakes to teach others to learn from their mistakes from what
i've been told quenville and bowman have done so and i'm glad genuinely that matters that doesn't
mean they deserve reinstatement they're in action no their active decision not to act along with
mcdonough shovel day off who never takes any shit here and blunk led directly to aldrich being
convicted of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in michigan none of them belongs in the nhl
people act like kyle beach is the only one involved no there was a lot more there was a
minor in michigan and uh there's still black ace one who i believe is still going through
proceedings there was a second player we never talk about the fact that there was a second player
the coverage of this story generally speaking is so poor or at least the uh average fan like
listen not everyone can pay attention to bloody everything yeah but the average fan's knowledge
of this story is insufficient to have uh an opinion on it um none of them belongs in the
nhl this is mark lazarus again uh no team should want them leading their young men as i wrote a
couple months ago the best case scenario here is that they get reinstated and all 32 teams take a
pass that would send a message but that will never happen not in this league not in this sport and
then um there was another one from scott powers what brad aldrich allegedly did while with the
blackhawks was bad enough but their management's failure to properly report him allowed him to go
on and sexually assault a minor to me there's no coming back from that maybe not surprising but the
nhl's decision was wrong today and katie strang who's very familiar with the story quote tweeted
Scott Powers. Scott points out something that often goes overlooked in this case. The mishandling
slash inaction by the Blackhawks allowed Brad Aldrich to move on and later sexually assault
a minor for which he was convicted. Thinking about that young man today. When, when Beach,
who was severely wronged, um, you know, got his settlement from the Blackhawks,
he got to speak his truth um on on tsn with rick westhead it was a very powerful moment
we got to hear from his own lips uh you know what happened to him what he went through we got to
witness his tears we'll never get that with that young man and there's an interview that a lot of
people missed and it is it's traumatizing and it is hard to watch but that young man who brad
aldridge sexually assaulted um at the high school um that young man's mother did an interview with
rick westhead and if you want to know the lasting impact of the inaction of the chicago blackhawks
and what it did you have you have to you owe it to anyone you're sending this opinion out into the
public for you owe it to them and yourself if you're going to continue to have an opinion
on whether or not these guys should be back in the nhl you owe it to them uh to listen to that
interview it's heartbreaking so that's where we're at right now um they're reinstated um
they don't have nhl jobs from the nhl side of things i definitely don't think what the punishment
was in the end because now everything's been resolved from the nhl side of things that the
punishment on the blackhawks of the two million dollar fine was enough and this two and a half
year suspension where it's kind of just a break in action and quenville got to coach his last game
on his own accord and then now he's back and can be resigned none of this feels like enough
for what went on and steve you described it perfectly there um now that we know kind of
what's been resolved from the nhl side and punishing these people none of it feels like
enough not to the Blackhawks not to anybody any individual involved I'm like the Blackhawks should
put their money where their mouth is and and hire Stan Bowman uh because they couldn't have talked
about him more glowingly on the way out um go for it I think um I think the name that's lost in this
because you've got Al McIsaac you've got Stan Bowman you've got Joel Quinville the reason this
name is lost is because no one cares about the business side really you're here to watch the
games right uh the guy that i ultimately hold the most responsible for this is john mcdonough
john mcdonough was the from all accounts all accounts the dictatorial terrifying to employees
brutal to deal with president and ceo of the chicago blackhawks for a long time the black
and this guy anybody who could deal with rocky wurtz uh sorry not rocky wurtz his father who's
the who's the it was rocky wurtz anybody who could deal with you remember that rocky wurtz
interview after this um could deal with him for a long period of time or was good friends with him
you get a sense of who this person is they pointed they pointed 10 fingers and 10 toes at that guy
when everything came out uh i know but i think that it's worth bringing it back oh do it because
who has it mcdonough has not been reinstated no he should and he never should yeah uh john mcdonough
uh just so you know was at the meeting shovel day off was there uh i can't believe bergevin
skates on this too that he didn't know but you know whatever yeah we've already regardless of
that mcdonough is the guy that said you guys focus on the hockey i will handle this and he
didn't and yes bowman quinville mckissick whoever else was there they needed to act differently so
don't get it don't get it twisted but this guy this john mcdonough deserves to have his name
out there deserves to have his reputation stained for this. This is the guy who headed up the
organization, understood and knew exactly what happened, knew all the allegations and chose to
do nothing. Ultimately, the responsibility rests with him and it rests with ownership for employing
this guy. If if you really listen, I understand they all have their parts to play. But John
mcdonough for me is the guy that really is brutal in this he's the one that promised these guys that
i was going to do something about it and he chose not to i can't for the life of me i can't imagine
what it takes to be able to pull that off and that's the guy here that i'm at least at very
least he's not working in the sport if we if we take one consolation prize out of this he's 71
probably doesn't want to work anymore anyway but when you remember john mcdonough don't remember
the cups remember this um i need to re-familiarize myself with this story like we knew it like the
back of our hand when it was front and center yep it's gotten lost in the sands of time a little bit
and i think that's the case with a lot of people this isn't just a story about kyle beach um there
is another blackhawks player involved and two schools involved by the way there's a university
and the high school there's a young man in michigan uh who's involved sometimes i think
about that poor chicago blackhawks staffer who had to be with brad aldrich during stanley cup
celebrations that he was for mystifyingly allowed to participate in um it's kind of nuts it is it's
it's a deeper story than is popularly remembered right and and people can't be faulted for that
because there's only so much in your life that you can remember right you know i i don't blame
people for not being as fully educated as you know you got lives and things going on but uh it the
story at the time which is why we had rick on in the first place was criminally underreported
and and it remains so and i think i just want you to not forget some of these names i i still
remember having a conversation with you two when the story broke it's on tsn.ca it hadn't really
taken off and you know i'm like this this is a thing eh and you guys were like yeah what the
fuck and you read the whole thing and we're wondering why it's not being talked about more
like we had to take the initiative to be like wait a sec no this is a thing because it just wasn't
being spoken about by anyone other than rick i i looked up rick's email on the bell intra office
email we had to get him to unblock me yeah he had me blocked for some reason and now we're like buds
yeah yeah we had to get him to unblock me yeah yeah it was a long time ago so uh we'll leave it
there and don't worry if we didn't get to your favorite team we will compliment them on friday
i promise we're going episodes all the way till july so there's plenty plenty of time let's hit
the extra and uh rock and roll here uh it you know hopefully by friday too some of the names you guys
brought up, Tarasenko, LeBlanc. Who was the other guys?
Daniel Sprong.
Daniel Sprong. Hockenpah.
Hockenpah. We can get some announcements
on that, too. You know?
