Starting point is 00:00:00 the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake ah welcome to the second half of a back-to-back show well even though it was really back-to-back this week it's just two shows and i i feel these are my back-to-back days these are jesse's back-to-back days and i i'm feeling a little i'm feeling it a little today two shows none None of that made sense. I know, because I'm not sharp today, man. I'm telling you. I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:00:33 I thought you were making fun of me because I just recorded a podcast. Did you? Yeah, with Mike Stevens. Oh, that was the Staff and Graph one? That's what I thought you were leading towards, but no. It was just about the thing you do every day. What role are you supposed to be on that show? Are you the Staff or the Graph?
Starting point is 00:00:50 I think it's, well, okay. So I guess Mikey is Graph. and then i think i'm phonograph because i'm very loud like maybe i don't know okay does staff refer to staff infection um you know that that's a common misconception jesse it's no it's not what it is interesting okay yeah i always get that confused yeah well listen there's lots to talk about today we got the leafs on a three-game losing streak we got an nhl deal with espn the athletic sean shapiro will join us to break that down um and also a few other things like betman talking about the cap we got our boy troy groschnik who randomly came up on the show last episode
Starting point is 00:01:33 and who recorded his first win in six years between then and now steve finally you bringing up someone's name has done something good for the world it's amazing yeah what a story such inspiration i can't wait for cj to tweet that he's a juggernaut also evander kane and the sharks might be voiding his contract three years in and trade deadline a month away but the keyword could be dead at the deadline so we'll get into that but first let's get into who wore the crown jesse who brought who's brought to you by today today i'm gonna read a dm from ian mcnaughton and slid into my dms and proved his donation to who did he donate to sick kids foundation so i'm gonna read his uh message let's hear it he's a regular sdp
Starting point is 00:02:24 listener i made a donation to sick kids just give you background on myself this is for adam I had anemia in 2013 and was in BC Children's Hospital for a combined 10 days. I'm grateful for the work done by SickKids and thought I'd make a contribution. I'm not sure if you could promote this. Yes, we can, Ian. But I have a passion project. It's a media organization called Speak Your Peace. It's based in Vancouver.
Starting point is 00:02:52 They have a podcast and an Instagram page. And you would like us to mention it on the show? There it is. so adam today's episode is brought to you by ian and speak your piece please read the liner his last name was mcnaughton was it not mcnaughton right there well well guys who wore the crown this week is brought to you by ian why not why not no ian why not oh no i should have how did you guys not know that i was gonna do that you knew i was gonna do that come on i don't know where you're where you're gonna go well ian mcnaughton thank you so much
Starting point is 00:03:30 for your donation ian why not there you go one steve follow it up do it do it how about how why not all right jesse uh you're gonna kick us off today we haven't done that in a while jesse is kicking us off with who wore the crown yeah yeah that's what i want all right i'm very happy i got to leave the pack on this one because i i had a feeling that one of you were going to steal this answer for who are the crown because my crown today goes to austin matthews not because he had one of the most impressive own goals in the history of hockey you don't really see guys kick a deflected puck into their own net quite often backheel it into their own net like a soccer player but just the fact that he's injured and he's doing this and he was on pace for 50 and 50
Starting point is 00:04:18 and we thought it happened and then this stupid wrist injury happened and now we're all disappointed but he's still out there scoring and it's unbelievable to see professional athletes at this level do these amazing things when like if i got a wrist injury i wouldn't be able to move my mouse and i'd have to take a week off of work because i couldn't use my computer you know but i and then austin matthews goes out there and scores nhl goals at the professional level and i think it's just hella impressive that our best player continues to be our best player and that's what we've wanted as Leafs fans for so long to have a stud horse on the team
Starting point is 00:04:51 who actually shows up every single day and we drafted him a long time ago first overall and it's finally come to fruition that we got Matthews on the team so just celebrate Austin Matthews a little today he gets my crown Steve you're next my friend
Starting point is 00:05:05 you know what speaking of stud horses I gotta give one to this stud horse because he's he's i'm gonna avoid it zach hyman i'm gonna give it to zach hyman fuck that was mine okay oh really yeah no go ahead i mean no you can still be yours like it's still be mine but will he be ours is the question and i just hate that zach hyman who is usually at best like the sixth
Starting point is 00:05:42 the most appreciated leaf um the conversation around him now is gosh darn it he's doing real well that means he's gonna cost too much money and i hate that i hated that with mitch marner and i ended up being right there was plenty of time to worry about that contract later didn't have to worry about it in season same thing with zach hyman um eight goals eight assists 16 points in 25 games he's driving his own line he works hard in so many games where the leafs look out of it or the effort is inconsistent his is always there gosh darn it i'm gonna give it to zach hyman and fun little tidbit uh kenny agostino is going to be making his leafs debut tonight no way what kenny agostino and zach hyman have in common they were both fifth round picks in 2010
Starting point is 00:06:36 wow i just learned that now just Kenny Agostino has been with the Leafs for like 18 months though hasn't he he's been around for a while he has i honestly considered giving him the crown because he's been such a good soldier in the AHL for so long he's been out of the NHL for so long and you never know when you're going to get that shot again but he's been nothing but positive and a great contributor to the Marlies and here he is finally getting a shot but my crown my crown if If one of you took Austin Matthews was going to be Galchenyuk, just because I forgot that he had him on the team. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:07:11 He's been doing okay. He's making a million bucks. Yeah. My crown is going to go to Zach Hyman as well. And Zach Hyman is playing so well that there are lunacy, lunacy contract predictions out there right now that Zach Hyman is going to make between $5 and $7 million. And if he does, it won't be in Toronto.
Starting point is 00:07:30 So, Zach, it's great to have you here. if you're gonna go make that money please by all means go make it somewhere else because we love you but that is crazy no it's like numbers got to start with a five i'm like i don't think it does you're but zach hyman is an incredible hockey player i hope for zach hyman's sake that that number starts with a five but you got to remember we're in a depressed hockey market where nobody spends any money and the leafs will be able to spend enough money to keep him uh my recommendation to Leaf fans is please don't pre-hate Zach Hyman based on how much money he's going to make it's going to be more than to the 2.1 or whatever it is he is making right now and that's good also
Starting point is 00:08:09 remind yourselves too that the game that he plays long term is going to be very hard on his body so if it's anything more than a three-year contract this offseason I'm just saying it's too long he's I think he'd be willing to take a lower number at term to stay at the Leafs yeah like at term you mean like like uh give him a longer contract because he knows the game he plays is one day zach hyman's not gonna have it and yeah that could be a few years from now hey joe thornton still in the nhl it's not like he's had a cakewalk of a career or jason spezza or wayne yeah but they didn't play that kind of game wayne simmons played that kind of game yeah right and you see what i'm saying so i i think he he's the sort of guy who'd be willing to get turned well and and and so and
Starting point is 00:09:02 we can get into this a little bit later sean shapiro is going to be on in about seven minutes here zach hyman's been incredible we want zach hyman to be incredible we want zach hyman to stay but let's not get crazy and that is who wore the crown brought to you by ian mick why not no yes you have to that's the rule i do my job why not thank you my not why not sorry i keep forgetting you're on a back-to-back ad i'm sorry so so anyway thank you ian for uh your donation and your story we really appreciate it jesse can we give this podcast one more shout out yeah let me just pull it up here again so uh it's called speak your piece they have a podcast and an instagram page if you could go
Starting point is 00:09:44 follow ian that would be great yeah there you go now uh so yeah i mean listen the leafs are losers of three straight but for whatever reason we must worry worry ourselves with two people freddie anderson and zach heim i heard jamie mcclennan on tsn a couple days ago say that the biggest mistake the leafs made was not extending freddie anderson four years before the season started uh i heard another radio show say that um that uh that zach hyman's going to be a five million dollar plus hockey player this offseason he could be again we'll be in toronto that makes more sense than the freddie thing yeah well i think you gotta remember noodles is that he's a former goalie and values goaltending um like kelly rudy right he's always like those guys are like
Starting point is 00:10:34 wait a second what about the goalies right and i get it i get it say what you will about goalies they got a good union they sure do goalies who has goalies backs better than goalies they stand fast for each other now the other thing the thing with with uh the freddie thing was that it's not that freddie's not a good goal he is a good goalie uh but a four-year extension is aggressive that's a long long time for freddie anderson and we're still not a hundred percent like i look at the winnipeg game the last one that we just saw tuesday night and i think the leafs played really well they outchanced the jets they outshot the jets it wasn't score effects they were out shooting them when they were tied they were out shooting them when they were ahead um this was a this was
Starting point is 00:11:20 a the Leafs got hellebucked basically right and he's a Vesna goalie so of course that can happen uh but there were some people who were quite um perturbed I should say by Freddie Anderson after the game based on his play wanted to get your thoughts on that guys just you want that or or you want me it's it's an easy one steve so i'll i'll let you take it but i'm just gonna say uh you know you can't you can't control things that aren't your fault so go ahead steve interesting maybe your takes are different i will i think our takes are different okay no well uh i will understand and even support jesse's takes but i do have this to say i think what's going on with freddie anderson and this fan base is they're tired of
Starting point is 00:12:15 games ending and the story of the game is the leafs had the second best goalie you know what i mean um maybe we're expecting too much out of freddie um there was a time in his least career where he was expected to do far too much um and he did it and now we're in this phase where the team in front of them is easily the best it's ever been the defense is front in front of them is easily the best it's ever been and what's hilarious about that game against the jets is despite their defensive mistakes at worst the leafs look like last year's leaves which is still not great obviously we yelled about that team a lot but at their worst the leafs look like last year's leafs that's how much they've raised the bar this year
Starting point is 00:13:05 and my concern with freddie the okay the first goal perfect tip the second goal matthews temporarily forgot hockey yeah it's okay he scored two goals and scored he made on his own team but yeah he made up for it uh it was very weird the third goal yes it was a complete defensive breakdown he did not see where the shot came from he didn't know who had the puck and the fourth goal the mason appleton one i was like he's hurt this guy is hurt i'll say it like everyone going matthew shouldn't be playing because he's not a hundred percent freddy it's i'll put any money it's near groin any money it's near groin there's he's hesitant he seems sort of squeamish but um i don't know what it is necessarily with this fan base a fan base that has
Starting point is 00:14:03 actually i think notoriously loved goalies whoever's been goalie of the leafs and love freddie and love freddie whoever's been goalie of the leafs over the last our entire lives has had to save the entire day and that was his job for a while and for some reason the second he arrived fans were like jack campbell that's our guy what are you talking about his first game was a 5-4 almost loss against the ducks in which the least blue elite jack campbell that's our guy that is our guy right there and i think it's because least fans haven't seen him lose yet he has not lost a game this year yet and it's coming it's coming eventually i would like to see Campbell and Freddie split the net
Starting point is 00:14:52 and have whoever's playing the best be the guy who gets the lion's share of the games for the next little bit. Something's not quite right with Freddie. We're also going to have to pivot to Sean, who's
Starting point is 00:15:08 waiting for us. Let's bring him on. display, and an immersive 19-speaker AKG surround audio system. This city demands agility, and Optic delivers with precision to make every drive extraordinary. Let's take the Cadillac. Find out more at CadillacCanada.ca. Luxury sales claim based on S&P Global Mobility Canadian New Vehicle
Starting point is 00:15:36 total registrations for calendar year 2025 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. Bringing on Sean Shapiro with an infant bouncing on his knee. Like, that's multitasking. Sean, thanks for joining the Steve Dangle Podcast for the first time. And we know it's going to be a bit of a crazy one for you. So we'll keep it somewhat short, but obviously the, what we wanted to talk to you about is the ESPN slash Disney slash ABC and
Starting point is 00:15:57 NHL deal. This is a big one because the NHL hasn't had games on ESPN since 2004. Joe Thornton was playing back then just for everybody keeping track. And, you know, I think this has been ever since that relationship ended, it's always seems to have been the NHL needs to get back on ESPN. They finally did it.
Starting point is 00:16:18 What are your initial thoughts on how this deal came together? And then, you know, what its effect on the game overall will be? Yeah, for me, I mean, the biggest thing that stands out about this is it's kind of the unique nature of a deal where like we went from NBC, which was we went from NBC, which was a just a straight national TV deal where this ESPN deal, it's a national TV deal. But the big thing about it that I think we need to keep remembering is this is a huge push for both espn and the league into streaming is kind of the most important thing um where it's the 400 million dollar 420 million dollar valuation 100 million of that is pretty much
Starting point is 00:17:00 essentially just for to take over the nhl tv product in the united states for espn plus it's it's really a big push from the nhl standpoint to say streaming is where we're going and and And we trusted ESPN subscriber base to give 75 exclusive games in the U.S. to this without possibly losing an audience. So that's one of the biggest takeaways from me on this. And then the other thing about how this all came together is it's interesting because NBC, one of the important things I think that kind of gets forgotten is NBC, under their current deal that expires at the end of this season, had the right of first negotiation. and so mbc and the nhl they went through those negotiations they had those discussions and this still got to espn to get the a package so to me those are the kind of the biggest parts of it so the multi-tiered we're going into streaming we're embracing streaming and b of mbc not willing
Starting point is 00:17:58 to uh come to the table for the a package and letting it get to espn even in the first place since streaming seems to be the way they're going with all this do you know much about like plans for like i don't know i don't know if there's regional blackouts or exactly how it works in the states but it's it's a point of contention up here uh people hate when games are blacked out adam um they're ridiculous why are we blacking out games in the internet era come on you already know my opinion on that i don't think it's the way we should be going but do you know if they're gonna make it basically countrywide the blackouts the regional blackouts are still going to apply so like if you're in if you're in Boston you can't watch the Bruins game
Starting point is 00:18:40 on ESPN plus it's just like it was the one that's on NHL TV you're going to have to still get Nesson and get your regional sports network and and and here but then they're going to try and get they're going to try and hook you on ESPN plus by getting you with the well we have 75 exclusive games on ESPN plus that don't go to regional sports networks across the league and so knowing as boston there's probably since we're using boston example there'll probably be eight games on that so um they're the blackouts still applying yes that is a big issue in the united states and i know one of the first uh first questions i got from many people uh fans and everything like that when when this all came out is are we finally getting around to the black getting rid of the
Starting point is 00:19:20 blackout restrictions and no they are not wow you know it's it's funny sean with with um with this deal that they you know blackouts aside you can understand the business case for a blackout but it does seem like a bit of a dated concept but you're not going to change that now what i what i do want to talk to you about is is okay so the a package is it's 75 games does that and then obviously the stanley cup finals on i think abc and espn plus and that sort of thing the um the thing that i'm most interested in is these 75 games they're national i'm assuming they're national games right yeah so yeah essentially i mean it's essentially under the espn umbrella there's essentially 100 national games a year essentially there's 25 or more um is the language
Starting point is 00:20:08 25 or more that are going to be on espn and abc traditional television and then there's going to be 75 that are exclusive to espn plus or hulu um basically both subscriptions get them but those are national espn produced games um where there won't even be the art the regional sports network won't even be brought it's like now it's like now in the united states where if mbc is doing a game and they have that exclusive game the local fox sports networks are taking the night off that's what those games will be like okay and oh sorry go ahead steve uh well i was i wanted to ask uh i feel like we're in our own little canadian bubble up here and all anyone keeps talking about is like oh i can't wait to hear steven a smith talk about hockey who who are the stars
Starting point is 00:20:55 supposed to be like who i guess they don't really have many stars in their hockey coverage like at the moment um other than digitally but who who are some of the prospective people we could see talking about hockey and who could you see them potentially bringing in to help yeah i mean one of the big things about it's it just talks about this is such a red this is such a bit of a retro deal too where the fact that gary thorne's name was trending on twitter yesterday makes um obviously he's someone where he's doesn't work for espn right now but he's someone who even told i think he told richard deitch yesterday uh that he'd definitely be interested in taking their call so um but the issue and it's not an i'll use the word issue but like like there's the john
Starting point is 00:21:41 bucha grosses there's the linda cones they're they're at espn there's those have always been the hockey folks, the folks that will talk about the game more, championed it more. And obviously, there's some people on the digital side, on the writing side. But I think ESPN, and I think we're going to really learn about how ESPN views this deal on whether it's content or actual, or for lack of a better word, an actual real passion. Because if it's a real passion, I think you'll see them get into the space and trying to hire more people that would actually be the person would be the personalities on this would be the people who would um because as much as as as great as any work that Butcher Gross and Linda Cohn do that's it right now there's no one else like
Starting point is 00:22:26 it's not really you're going to be like oh I tuned ESPN for this maybe they bring Barry Melrose in or something like that the issue is there's not really I don't know who's going to talk about and debate hockey on the daytime tv shows like they do with basketball and so i'm going to be really interested to see whether if espn if espn is really um pushing and really um emotionally attached to this the way they like to say they are in a introductory press conference on zoom yesterday then all of a sudden we'll see like okay you're going to actually have people with hockey knowledge otherwise it's just going to otherwise this could just be a content deal where after the honeymoon period of hey we have the nhl in two to three years are we just back to
Starting point is 00:23:06 them yelling about lebron's stat line instead on on first take right and you have to think the nhl wants that they want the pop culture crossover the stephen a smith's that uh you know the max kellerman's and obviously on the fox sports sides it's shannon sharp and skip bales those those big sort of debate shows are the things that that tend to make basketball relevant all the time not just every day but every hour of every day and and the nhl really misses that so my question next to you is and i know we've got limited time here they keep talking about this is the a package this is the a package yeah who is in on the b package nbcsn is no more fox obviously seems like the second player are they going to be the local guys and they'll probably have a lot more games
Starting point is 00:23:51 overall if they are the regional broadcaster will they not yeah well it's it's really weird one of thing that's really weird in the united states just got to keep in mind is the fox sports networks actually have nothing have nothing to do with fox big fox anymore actually um the uh the fox sports networks are owned by a company called sinclair um and they're actually all going to be rebranded um sometime later this year to the valley sports networks so as part as the united states continues to embrace the gambling and gamification of being able to bet across the country um valleys has basically bought the naming rights to all the old fox sports networks and so don't be surprised where come i don't know the exact sunset date for the fox sports uh titles but eventually it'll be
Starting point is 00:24:38 valley sports detroit valley sports southwest valley sports carolinas things like that where so uh and so those two are separate now fox as far as the actual national tvb package mbc is still interested and wants a seat at the table but they are in this crossroads of who they want to be as a company and whether the nhl is involved in that because um i've heard and been told that essentially 200 million is going to be 200 million us is going to get it done for the b package and nbc um that's what they paid for the a for the full exclusive package and so they're obviously not going to be thrilled to have a to have a third of the a third of the games and be the second player for the same price um and at the same time they're betting big on the nfl um like anyone would
Starting point is 00:25:24 in the in the united states they're they're getting they're they're paying billions of dollars to the nfl just for sunday night football their their rights deal comes up soon with english premier league in the united states which is a massive deal and so the nbc is kind of is is it's the ball is kind of an nbc's court on this of whether do they want and have the budget to invest in the nhl or do they kind of eventually walk away from this um and that's the case and kind of my understanding is NBC wants this they'll get this and be the B it'll get the B package but if they don't want it I'm sure it'll go to I'm pretty sure it'll go to Fox that's kind of my feeling the other thing that's just interesting about all of this just like we think of the of
Starting point is 00:26:03 how involved NBC has been with the NHL for the last decade like the winter classic the January 1st game that's it's an NBC production because NBC didn't have doesn't have college football in the United States on January 1st ESPN has college football on January 1st Fox has a big college football station so and i don't the nhl is never going to get rid of the outdoor games but if mbc is not involved is there a television partner that has a january 1st demand in the united states is another kind of interesting fallout of all this because i don't know if fox mbc is going to be if mbc is the package though they're obviously going to keep trying to push the winter classic because they need something on january 1st fox doesn't need something to go
Starting point is 00:26:42 head-to-head with college football on january 1st because they are one of the broadcasters for college football wow wow that's really really interesting uh there's a lot i'm not a big holiday sports guy like you can have that event on a day that's not january 1st you know i know that's sacrilege in the states i think i think in the states it is that's a family thing that's why there's christmas day nba games man it's a it's a tradition yeah it's it's a it's a big thing here as far as between the between i mean it's why i don't know it's why thanksgiving is there's three nfl games on thanksgiving every year and everything like that it's a it's a big element that teams push for it's it's something where uh like if the nhl wasn't a completely
Starting point is 00:27:27 american run league they wouldn't have the christmas break like they do where we like we have no no games for what the 24th through the 26th in the nhl if this was a completely american run league and a more quote-unquote americanized sport from the top you wouldn't have that break Sean, last question here before we let you go, and I'm going to make Steve a little uncomfortable here. ESPN is a 35% owner of TSN in Canada. How does this deal affect Sportsnet in terms of their partnership with the NHL? I'm not saying it would throw anything off based on how it is, but is Sportsnet, if they're going to take any of these national games, are they going to run an ESPN feed on Sportsnet? How will that affect things? It's an interesting question. I think that's still to be figured out on this element, frankly. I've talked to some other people on theories on what it could look like. You could see them taking an ESPN feed, but obviously that's not something where Sportsnet's going to be super thrilled about that. So you also could see more of a deferral from Sportsnet's perspective, intentionally taking more of the regional sports network to avoid the ESPN,
Starting point is 00:28:40 or more so of taking whatever that B package is, of focusing on the games that end up on there. So that's still definitely to be determined, but it's a really good question, something I'm really fascinated to see how it tracks over the next, once the season does, when the next season does start. Okay. Sean Shapiro of The Athletic.
Starting point is 00:28:58 Check out his article on this. It's on the front page of the Athletic NHL page right now. Sean, we're going to let you get back to being a dad. Thank you so much for making time for us today, the last minute. Thank you. Thanks for having me, guys. In Toronto, every arrival is a statement, and nothing says it better than this.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Cadillac Optic was the number one selling luxury EV in Canada for 2025. Find your rhythm across a seamless 33-inch display and an immersive 19-speaker AKG surround audio system. This city demands agility, and Optic delivers with precision to make every drive extraordinary. Let's take the Cadillac. Find out more at CadillacCanada.ca. Luxury sales claim based on S&P Global Mobility
Starting point is 00:29:35 Canadian New Vehicle Total Registrations for calendar year 2025 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. Can I follow up on two things? Sure. It's a 20% stake ESPN has in TSN. Oh, okay. Liar!
Starting point is 00:29:48 Also, if you guys remember when Disney bought 21st Century Fox, that was a part of the whole deal. fox had to get rid of their regional network ownership by the acquisition date so that's why they sold off all of those regional networks to bali the uh gambling company and then but so when disney acquired fox they didn't acquire things like the regional networks uh fox news fox the station and like fs1 and all those things but they did acquire 21st century fox which is the studio and all of the assets like the Simpsons
Starting point is 00:30:23 and all that stuff so yeah that's where that comes from yeah that's that's perfectly clear who couldn't who could possibly misconstrue that they're all called Fox none of them belong to each other or have any relation and Jesus Lord
Starting point is 00:30:40 what is all that when he was going through the seven degrees or six degrees of Kevin Bacon there oh yeah now it's owned by Sinclair I'm like pardon yeah yeah yeah no it's not i forgot what a player sinclair has become in american broadcasting it's enormous so uh uh it's it's interesting very very interesting and interesting that you can sell the name of your sports network to a betting company how interesting is that so you imagine like so like sports net used to be rogers sports net and
Starting point is 00:31:11 before that, when, before CTV owned TSN, CTV launched Sportsnet. So it used to be called CTV Sportsnet. And then they sold it to Rogers really incestuous and weird, but that's what happened. And so now like, you imagine it would be like, um, you know, TSN is sort of like a godly brand in this country, but can you imagine like, uh, I don't know, some insurance company like sonnet insurance tsn sports center or just sonnet insurance network and it's sports and you know like and you you got to look at it like if if a company is willing to pay for that much how does a broadcasting company say no so bally sports maybe that's a 10-year deal that's that's i mean sort of brilliant in a way right because you're just like oh we got to rename these anyway
Starting point is 00:32:01 let's sell it to somebody it's like naming an arena i mean people are talking about how expensive these deal these deals are if those are the players that you're selling to uh you should be charging more that means it's a gambling company you should be charging more they charged a lot like a deep pocket a lot yeah it's it's all very confusing to me and i i don't know that whole thing about oh i'm gonna make steve uncomfortable here listen i really like working at sports net uh i here's how i involve myself all right what am i doing today what is the cool stuff i'm creating today and how could i make people like it that's my job right i in terms of i am very not of the biz i'm not good at biz talk i just try to make cool shit poop in a
Starting point is 00:32:51 freezer logo that's all i try to do well there you go uh so very very interesting what's happening with the nhl but great to see them back on espn uh also in that press conference gary betman mentioned that he thinks the cap will be flat for at least the next four years which goes to show how much money these teams are going to lose this year if is it 81 and a half is the deal right now yeah boy if 81 and a half is the salary cap and you've got teams that can't spend any money at all this might be not only the best trade deadline for rich teams but the best off season for rich teams because you're you're talking about a buyer's mark on on both situations and that's why and i bring up zach hyman as an example zach hyman taylor hall anybody else that's a free agent at
Starting point is 00:33:39 the end of this year are not going to make pre-pandemic money they're just not unless a team unless two teams that are rich so let's say the bruins and the rangers get into some sort of pissing match to each other about wanting one player it's not going to happen so you're going to see a lot of teams look at these contracts a little bit differently too because what would happen in the past is okay so you sign a player and he's making maybe a million or two more than you want him to per year but you're you're basing you're going okay well here's the deal though the cap is going to probably go up two to three million a year so by year two year three of this deal it doesn't hurt as bad and in free agency you always overpay by that million maybe a million
Starting point is 00:34:21 and a half two million because you're just acquiring a guy and you're not giving up any assets and you also didn't have to scout and draft him so free agency just like i'm taking this for money you overpay a little because you just get it you don't give up anything you're just adding right right there's a bidding so right so there will be it will be very interesting to see what happens with the contracts this off season and you know because of this and i've been thinking and thinking and thinking you know and i've been on for two years now we're not going to resign freddie anderson it's not going to happen if freddie anderson is available at three and a half or four million you have to if if anderson has a terrible playoffs do you just
Starting point is 00:35:02 resign him because he's so cheap well like what's your other option right i mean and that's what jamie mcclennan was trying to say i think on tsn yesterday it was or the day before he was like listen uh it's a one he's a he may not be the best number one goalie but he is a number one goalie in this league there aren't 30 goaltenders that are better than him there probably aren't even 15 so that's fair that's a fair point it's hard to find a guy that can play 60 games and i think there will be a lot of people who go well actually and they'll show you the numbers and say there are more goalies than you think who are better than freddie anderson those goaltenders have not had to do what freddie anderson has had to do anti-ranta is getting a lot of talk today
Starting point is 00:35:44 because of his performance last night with the coyotes anti-ranta when was the last time he started 15 of his team's last 20 you know what i mean it's it doesn't everything injuries and everything and now like he's not even the best goalie in his own team and he's still good but like darcy kemper is there right so freddie anderson i i for all his warts and listen i get the frustration with freddie anderson you want to make it to the second round you're tired of having the second best goalie in a game um the leafs have been so much nicer to watch this year because they've been consistent and with freddie you really don't know what freddie you're gonna get but freddie has been asked to do what very few goalies in the nhl have been asked to do over
Starting point is 00:36:30 the past half decade and i think by and large he's done an amazing job starting 75 percent of their games each year that he's probably more like it's like no well i mean there was a stat up there i think on Tuesday yeah literally it was like him and Connor Hellebuck yeah they posted the list of the goalies who've started the highest percentage of games yeah and it was at 75 which is crazy and Connor Hellebuck 77 percent oh so you know so this is the thing right but you know you know you do have your worries with Freddie Anderson's body potentially breaking down as you get older you get less flexible and remember these guys have been hard on their bodies at 30 years old for 20 of the 30 years they've been alive you know like it's not it's not an
Starting point is 00:37:10 easy go so it'll be very interesting to see how the Leafs handle that this offseason but who cares because that's this offseason and we are talking about a team that could contend for the Stanley Cup and that is why I want to talk about the trade deadline now and dead is the key word for this year's deadline dead it's a dead zone there are not a lot of teams that are buying but according to Elliot Friedman today the Leafs are in on half the teams that are selling and we're talking names anything anything that you've heard of uh to obviously grandlin was the first guy and we were kind of giving elliot the gears he's like you know i just i don't want to say it i don't want to say it we're like stop teasing us elliot stop if you were on this show right now i'd be
Starting point is 00:37:49 like why were you playing coy with michael grandlin that's a good question i wondered that too when he was on we i'm sure we could but like when he was like oh i don't want to say i'm like it's taylor hall taylor hall 100 taylor hall it's taylor hall reigning mvp guy michael grandland is a guy who only a few months ago we're like hey this guy hasn't signed oh yeah he's still good isn't he he's pretty good it's not oh i don't i don't want to say i'm with you i want to bring i want to bring him on give him shit well and that's the um that's the the part that is so fun about this is that like elliot's got a way that he does things and i think it's very interesting to see it'll be very interesting to see how he handles this trade deadline but i do i do think
Starting point is 00:38:40 there has to be a reason for that so maybe we steve we should invite him on chances of him having time for us are slim but we should invite him on elliot is does not get enough credit like he's he's been one of the best if not the best insiders in the sport for at least a few years now but like he's really if you listen to 31 thoughts like he's becoming such a much better entertainer like he's just he's fun to listen to um really like him but as long as we're talking about names at the deadline i have mine okay so hold on let me just let me just pull this up okay all right pull it out give me uh our boy account for hockey is just on fire right now and uh basically he said elliot freeman says on 590 that would be a sports net property
Starting point is 00:39:30 uh that he estimated the deficit that needs to be made up between the owners and the players before the cap starts rising again is a billion dollars so that's why the cap will be flat for a while um and then he was talking about and i can't even find it okay well anyway the names are grandlin i believe arvidsson has come up eric stall has come up which is great uh we've also got uh matthias at home which is interesting because i thought i don't know it just seemed a little bit like okay yeah sure matthias at home but nobody's getting it matthias at home like not not in season uh and a few other names have come up as well uh let me just see here i found it there we go um uh leafs looking for a player who can play in their top six six looking
Starting point is 00:40:17 at all possibilities and that includes eric stall and that is according to uh elliot friedman as well so listen steve who is your name i've already given you my name is eric stall and i like that i was the first guy to just go here's a random guess and it turned out maybe but but i'm going to take all the credit i can for the eric stall thing which was based in no truth or reality it was just something i was like well that's interesting why not him what what's your that's interesting why not him your best my best so we were talking about like who's who's your guy they need a top six winger well who's the best one available taylor hall uh taylor hall easiest name easiest they need it is that we've all settled on that they need a top six win yeah
Starting point is 00:41:03 i think we agree i think people agree that that's what they need um it's not my number one need yeah it's not my number one what would be my number one steven i've been looking at the leafs over the last few games okay they go into the playoffs how are they doing fantasy scenario how are they doing it's game six of the first round are they about to win it yes okay tj brody goes down they're fucked they're fucked they're fucked okay okay um sorry sorry did i say tj brody my bad i meant uh uh jake muzzin they're fucked fucked okay justin hall goes down they're fucked i think they win that game and lose the next round fucked morgan riley same thing fucked fucked they need sorry for the parents listening in the car you should know better by now
Starting point is 00:42:01 And here's the other thing Seattle We're forgetting about Seattle So how does that play into this? The Leafs are gonna More than likely Protect 7 forwards 3D Rather than go 4 and 4
Starting point is 00:42:19 Well who the hell do you protect? Matthews Tavares Marner Nylander Kerfoot Hyman Mikheyev
Starting point is 00:42:29 Those are your top 4 you don't have to you don't have to protect hymen right i mean they could still claim them it's it would be weird for them to do it yeah yeah so you don't protect them okay so then you i don't know i guess you protect hang fall whatever so there you go now on d can you imagine yeah i don't think now on d wait what the you can use that slot for something else can you not yeah yeah but you can't go no no no why don't we protect 4d now that you're talking about no it's either yeah well because then you're talking about you could you could here i promise i'm getting somewhere with this okay so you got to do matthews you got to do tavaris you got to do
Starting point is 00:43:15 marty you got to do neilander if you do four and four then you're exposing kerfoot hyman although that would probably be a waste mckay of angle okay you're here you're 4d right you got muzzin who is signed you got riley who is signed you got brody who is signed and you got hall who is signed if you're resigned to the fact that you're doing seven and three which i don't know if they are but if they are doing seven and three that means you're losing whoever you don't protect out of muzzin riley brody and hall right back home has next year on his deal plus he'll make you a much much much better team this year he's my guy i want the most the most out of anybody he makes their defense undeniable and he gives her some he gives them some protection going forward
Starting point is 00:44:10 and another at home anybody sorry what really and i'm sorry no sorry to interrupt but another potential quarterback for the power plays good offensive guy is he not you have many options on the power play you'll have more options on the penalty kill and you'll be easily the best decor in canada in the country right so for me akom is the guy i want the most what do you give up for him isn't that the question right so the conversation is a strong defense so the conversation i had with mikey stevens so who's who are your top four prospects because uh sandy lilligren robertson and amirov you nailed it you nailed it down to the name do you want to part with any of those guys lilligren i wonder about i think i might do
Starting point is 00:45:11 lilligren i do lilligren i think i might do lilligren and here's the other really interesting issue with this year is draft picks i think are worth they're either worth less or more it's not the same value i think picks in the fourth fifth sixth seventh round actually have more value this year because it's always a dartboard you have no idea right after a certain pick you have no idea this year you have even less of an idea because a lot of these guys aren't even playing games or they're barely barely playing games or you can't go see them live or whatever if i'm the buffalo sabers for christ's sake i don't even have a scouting department don't give me your picks i don't what am i gonna do with them draft well i i have no shot so for a team like them if you're
Starting point is 00:46:01 looking at getting an eric stall or whoever else they have i want a prospect if i'm the preds yeah i'm rebuilding but i'm dave poyle i'm not planning on being shit for long i'd like someone who's ready or damn near close to ready and you don't see if you're getting at home he's asking for sandy he's asking for sandin and you do everything in your power to not give them sandin well you don't i don't know if the leafs can afford to give sandin i think if the option is have Ekholm or don't uh when it comes to that you just you you just roll the dice and keep Sandin so here's my question then if let's say you got Ekholm right okay and then you go into the expansion draft and this is this is who cares right it's really about winning the cup who cares
Starting point is 00:46:53 but you go into the expansion draft and you protect Tavares, Nylander, Matthews, Marner because you have to right those are your top four then of the five remaining defensemen Riley, muzzin hall brody ekholm who are you protecting and who are you exposing i am protecting one you're left riley's got one you're left i'm protecting riley muzzin brody ekholm exposing hall maybe they take hall oh well replace him with lilligren unless you had to give up lilligren and then there's your problem but it's it's and i think sandin is just going to straight up replace travis dermott we're forgetting about travis dermott kind of as a trade chip here um i'd rather keep him like i want them to be deeper on d have more that's the whole
Starting point is 00:47:42 point right you don't want to flip another d for him yeah that is but i'm just saying if there is a deal to be made here that's my guy that's a hundred percent my guy i i think there's a chance here because and and james myrtle wrote an article about it i think you're going to start to hear this more and more and more this is the stars are aligning for the Leafs nobody's got any money nobody can buy at the trade deadline and you know you're in you're well positioned as a team right now to do extremely well in the playoffs so it might make sense for Kyle Dubas to go in and not only get you know a marquee defenseman which we've been asking for for years and you know he did with TJ Brody and that was awesome but like a real incredible defenseman because if really if
Starting point is 00:48:26 if matias at colm slots in here he's slotting in on the third pair you're not splitting up the first two pairs they're playing too well together that's not the worst thing in the world because somebody's going to get injured we know that but i think it'll be interesting what if what if um you get what if you get a couple big trades and i don't you know shane o'brien was on the fan i think a couple days ago and he said that taylor hall doesn't really make guys around him better and i don't know if that's totally a fair assessment um there you know taylor hall i think is what he doesn't have to here yeah but i don't know i don't know that taylor hall is necessarily the guy either because i think okay so you got matthews is a big finisher on the on the first
Starting point is 00:49:11 line even you got guys to set him up um and then the second line we know tavaris can score a bunch goals he had 47 in his first year with the Leafs we know that he might need and with Nylander you know Nylander is a good assist man but he's he he wants to score too I think on that line I can see where they go playmaker on the left side do you know what I mean well that's what I get for right right and so the question becomes like do you think Kerfoot is the guy is he the guy you want there is he the guy the right guy there or if you can upgrade him obviously he's probably on his way out of town just based on what he makes is taylor hall the guy i'm not convinced taylor hall's the guy but i know he wants to win bad and i like that for any trade for a forward kerfoot has to
Starting point is 00:50:02 leave just for the salary to work right yes well this is money this is the interesting thing jesse is if you so you guys are selling me on going four and four because your highest paid forward outside of the top four is kerfoot at the moment yeah right so and hyman like you said is a ufa uh seattle can claim him if they want to lose him immediately um i don't think he would want to go there uh unless they offered him obscene money and then what's the point you're an expansion team the whole thing is you don't have to do that um so kerfoot what i could get claimed by seattle people are talking about him like he's a trade chip right now if he's i mean these next few games have to be so difficult for kerfoot mentally because how does he not feel like he's the one
Starting point is 00:50:58 heading out of town right now he's the one when you look up and down the nine forwards he's the one guy where you're like oh he's a hundred percent expendable here you know yeah and even going forward too you know even past this deadline it's like in the off seasons like yeah we could we can move car foot and bring somebody else in or just have a guy on the roster fill it up yeah he's on the left wing robertson and robertson and down the line um mirov and whoever happens to whoever they get this year or whatever um the forward i want i just i think hall is going to be too difficult to make work um i think granlin i think granlin's a really good fit work in terms of the lineup or in terms of acquiring him uh money for sure but also i just feel like i i feel like
Starting point is 00:51:49 granlin just plays the type of hockey that the leafs like can i can i jump in with something not that i disagree steve i think i think you're absolutely right on that but the leafs tend to go for guys that can play center and then put them on the wing and and that's why is grandlin a center though i'm pretty sure he can and is he gonna help them out on the pk like another reason i like stall and i'm gonna keep pushing this doll angle is he's good on the pk he went face offs stall i don't think is as good as grandlin but no no it's it says grandlin is a center here i'm sure he's played wing um stall is definitely cheaper 100 percent cheaper you're right there and maybe grandlin and if you're going to make two big moves maybe your moves are grandlin and ekholm and
Starting point is 00:52:38 that's probably in the same trade with nashville right you're probably doing some big blockbuster and then maybe you're able to call the sabers and go we need one more piece what do you need for eric stall and that's your minor minor move as well you know what i used to say is the best teams like the team that ends up winning the stanley cup usually didn't have to add that much at the deadline and then you look at what tampa did last year and that completely shits on that idea entirely because they went out and basically acquired their whole third line and if you look at the shatton kirk capital use a year which was against the that was the least first year back in the playoffs they added a whole bunch of guys didn't make it past second round i think a year
Starting point is 00:53:19 later when they cut it exactly so i think what we're learning is it's a mixed bag um i there's something there and i like the idea of nashville being the one-stop shop um boy ekholm grandlin and stall seems like a little bit of overkill this this is the other interesting thing i want to bolster the lineup but i also don't want to completely tear apart this team that's done so well on its own through injuries and all you got to look at the reasons they've done well and it's the first two lines and TJ Brody on defense and well obviously the the re-emergence of Muzzin and Hall and the and the gelling of them that started last season but you're not messing with the top two lines and you're not messing with the the top four deep you're messing
Starting point is 00:54:06 with a third line that's missed Nick Robertson and now he's he's on the Marlies and playing and probably will be ready for play he is and he'll be ready for playoff time but you want him as a third line option you don't want him to jump into the second line you want him on the third so you got more of a punch there too right yeah i want it all to have a purpose and right now i don't know if the leafs have the best third line but it's a third line with a purpose it's fast it's annoying it's on the puck it's sustained zone pressure zach hyman's driving it pierre engvall is doing a super admirable job. Ilya Mikheyev
Starting point is 00:54:41 is great. Now, Wood, I just don't know if Stahl matches what that line is trying to be. Granlund? Granlund? That's pretty interesting. Granlund as your
Starting point is 00:54:57 third C, and then you acquire Stahl anyway and make him your second line wing. That's interesting. I'm here for it. I'm here to listen. need like a a post power play line it's you know you can put grandlin taveras kneelander out there and stalk and wins the face-offs on the third line something like that i would like one more face-off guy especially on the penalty kill like spezza has done well in that role he's clearly
Starting point is 00:55:24 not a guy who should be on the penalty kill much longer than the face-off though you know and it's not like kerfoot has done he's been killing a lot of time but it's not like he's done an amazing job oh like i think what we're coming to here is they're not far away from being a really really difficult team to beat grandlin is your third seed i like it and it'll be interesting and i i don't want to again like i said i don't focus too much on this but i do want to say it'll be interesting to see how the leafs spend their money this off season because they do have some money coming off and it'd be interesting to see what they get you know you've got hyman ufa obviously beastly spezza thornton boy savings blah blah blah but there is you know freddie
Starting point is 00:56:14 anderson's five million dollars come off zach hyman's 2.25 million come off there's seven million bucks right there it's not bad well and then you give it all to hyman that's right seven mill i yeah yeah i think i think i think they've done they're giving their enormous amounts of money to players already and that is the four guys that got enormous amounts of money i think that's all done there's no real room for bigger contracts you know yeah it's about plugging the holes now it'll be very very interesting to see how this unfolds but i'm kind of excited and i I kind of want to know on the trade deadline front, if the New York Rangers are actually going to pull it off with Jack Eichel
Starting point is 00:56:57 because Jack Eichel, as you know, got injured. Ralph Kruger was unaware of it. Then backtracked and said, no, he knows. And then now Jack Eichel is gone for the game or gone for this week.
Starting point is 00:57:09 But people are speculating that this might be a extended absence of the Sabres. Just aren't talking about it yet. Can I tell you my theory? Let's hear it. so hockey players deal with heinous shit all the time their bodies are beat to hell um and they're always playing through something and when you know about it that means they're really playing through something so matthews must really be going through something right it's their knee
Starting point is 00:57:39 it's their hip flexor it's their hammy it's their whatever right it's a thousand things but they play through it because the season is worth playing through and they want a chance to win and they want to make it to the playoffs and then they'll play through the pain to get to the stanley cup if you're jack eichel does that sort of injury exist at the moment an injury you're going to play through that'll potentially shorten your career you're in pain every day the moment you wake up you're in pain when you go to bed you're in pain right no but you push it to the side because you're trying to want to fuck that if if i need surgery i'm getting it now so that we can compete for the sabers or whoever the hell down the line because this current group is not worth the pain
Starting point is 00:58:31 no it's not worth whatever he's going through that's what i wonder if the situation is because what what the hell is it he's missing sorry a game no sorry a week oh sorry long term what is long term yeah for some people a week is long term do you mean a month do you mean the entire season what are you talking about and i i wonder if he's mulling over being on the shelf all right like and why not vander kane did um you know different circumstance but he was willing to play through that injury and then the trade talks with the jets and back on track suit and all that happened and he went you know what i'm not going to play through this anymore i need the surgery anyway i'm going to get the surgery i wonder if jack eichel is mauling over the same decision
Starting point is 00:59:21 well and i'm looking at the rangers and i i just think the rangers are going to do this i just think that jack eichel and new york rangers are a match made in heaven and if you look at what could be in it for the sabers like to make the money work it's pretty easy like you can you can trade a brendan smith and maybe you can interest the sabers in a centerman like ryan strome you know four and a half million dollars not that the rangers want to lose ryan strome but they probably need something coming back and then it's picks prospects right it's going to be an expensive goodbye and war and the other thing the other thought i had was do the sabers take a chance on tony d'angelo because both of them kind of need each other bro i've i've been wondering the
Starting point is 01:00:00 same thing but here's tony needs a shot the rangers or the the buffalo sabers need somebody who needs a shot who'll actually play for them the sabers need buffalo to be a good place to play hockey though and tony d'angelo does not make it that that's i've wondered that adam like they do just need players with talent but like the ottawa senators are awful on paper awful um but outside of their bi-weekly ass kicking at the hand of the oilers it's very odd outside of those they're generally a really unpleasant team to play against right and it's not like ottawa is this beacon of positivity right now as as a hockey market and as a place to play an ownership group etc but they try the attitude is there the winning
Starting point is 01:00:56 give a shit attitude is there mark there in buffalo was it mark my thought this week that said the senators are going to be better than the leafs and hold on that yes it was hold on that because i do want to get to that are we going to talk about that yeah okay oh yes we are don't worry don't worry that's a fun conversation it is a fun conversation and i can see where he's coming from from it i've been saying like oh you know what it might not be today it might not be tomorrow but the sons are on their way what did richard deitch tweet he was at well the senators leafs better look in the rearview mirror there come the senators oh really like that was and i mean this season so i'm students law holy shit but like with the saber it's a miserable place to play
Starting point is 01:01:38 it's a miserable place to play and they're gonna fire another coach and yep the no one wants to play there and the contracts they do have are shit and it's it's awful it's an incredibly bleak situation and tony d'angelo does not make it better hey let me let me ask you this though okay history repeating buffalo is the place where they need people who need them who else needs a team like that to get back into the nhl you're not about to say evander kane no maybe but no i don't think evander kane well because if he terminates his contract but he's not going to to get back into the nhl to get back into the nhl who needs a team that's so desperate
Starting point is 01:02:26 that they would bring this person in are you about to say alex kalchenyuk no mike babcock yes oh baby They were interested in him before he was almost the head coach five years ago. Listen, Babs would turn the culture around there. I think you'd need some assurances that he's not going to pull the same shit that he pulled in Toronto. I feel like that would be a mess,
Starting point is 01:02:56 you know? Well, well, the Leafs were a mess before him and Lou came. In Adam's defense, players already hate playing there. So it's not like he's going to make that worse. No,
Starting point is 01:03:07 Oh, I see where you're going, man. Again. Because here's the thing. The Sabres cannot afford a coach. Ralph Kruger has guaranteed money next year at about $4.5 million. So basically, he signed Babs to $1.5 million, right? And the Leafs foot the rest of his bill. The Leafs would never say yes to that.
Starting point is 01:03:25 They would never say yes to that. Never. Never. If someone's going to be taking on Babcock, they're going to be paying the lion's share of his deal, and they're going to be out of the division. and the Buffalo Sabres as of next year of Gary Bettman is to be believed will be in the Leafs division Friedman brought up a name and I don't even remember who it was but like it was someone
Starting point is 01:03:45 who's in the Sabres organization who's just like the array of sunshine like just the most positive person I think priority number one is just making Buffalo an enjoyable place to play again just make it an enjoyable place to play again no one likes it no one likes it everyone was laughing at the taylor hall clip where he tripped over the blue line and i was focused on what he did afterward which is basically sulk and like like gesture like his dad's in the stand going oh dad's not gonna give me five bucks i didn't score a goal today like you know what i mean wasn't that you adam you got five bucks every time you scored a goal no it wasn't me it was one of my friends well there you go it's it's the same same thing it's a miserable miserable
Starting point is 01:04:35 place they just need something to happen there that makes it fun makes it fun your your top priority isn't even being good it's being stomachable it's not even stuff ottawa's not good it's stomachable you can watch them read their fan tweets from last night well no for some reason like okay as long as people were making fun of tyler toffoli for his early season numbers like just his goal scoring numbers against the canucks all right at what point do we put an asterisk on connor and leon just picking on that literally one goalie it's not even the whole team it's just they're beating the shit out of matt murray oh it's not fun anymore it's how dare you that that man how could you he's a person his life has value but uh yeah at what point do we put an asterisk
Starting point is 01:05:33 on that buffalo with everything they do all you got to do is make it a good place to play and like i'm looking at the team right now their defense has like signed to next year has jacob bryson that's a person i believe you uh colin miller and rasmus ristolainen brandon montour yeah i'll be back kicking and freaking screaming rasmus doline rfa you better pay me through the nose no one even remembers who i am i was the first overall pick henry okay how are you um good luck i don't want to be here dude matt erwin i don't want to be here dude carter hutton niner he doesn't want to be here and you don't want him it's who's going to be a saber next year it's a miserable situation kevin adams boy what a job he has in front of him man
Starting point is 01:06:27 yep well it'll set him up nicely when he wins gm of the year in a couple years uh yeah i was just looking at sam reinhardt remember that little bridge deal he signed yeah a lot of good that did them a lot of good that did oh it's okay we'll have to we'll pay him in a few how about you'll pay me every couple years because you stink and you need me a lot more than i need you so uh so moving on to another not so great team although in a much better position the the ottawa senators i've seen people go dj smith is going to be a jack adams award winner in the next three years i've seen mark mathot tweet that this team is going to be great in three years better than the Leafs which is based on how the NHL goes probably uh like the the way the NHL goes
Starting point is 01:07:14 is you've got like a three to five year window here to make it happen and if you don't you don't like it's like that's it then you got to start again now the Leafs do have an un otherworldly goal scorer in Austin Matthews uh an otherworldly assist guy Mitch Marner Tavares will still be there although you would think his skill would be slightly diminished at that point uh William Nylander who knows but you know the Leafs do have top end talent where there's plenty of guys you can draft that have top end talent whether or not that develops into dominant NHL playing though is a completely separate story and we see it time and time and time again Steve just mentioned Rasmus Ristolainen that was a first overall pick Rasmus Ristolainen 2018 2018 no Rasmus Ristolainen
Starting point is 01:08:01 Not first overall. Oh, Darlene, sorry. Did I say Ristolainen? You did. Oh, I'm sorry. No, Darlene, not Ristolainen. Yeah, sorry. They have two.
Starting point is 01:08:10 It's confusing. And so, listen, it's not that I don't think, I think first off, Mark Mathot knows what he's doing, and that's pissing off Leaf fans and making himself ingratiated to the market where he was beloved in Ottawa. Yes. Tweet makes complete sense for that reason.
Starting point is 01:08:25 Good for you, Mark. And maybe he gets a broadcasting job somewhere down the line where he just shits on Leaf fans and Ottawa Senators fans go yay and that that would be perfect that would be a great role for him like that come on what network where would he work like there's no local toronto the toronto sports network probably that's where he's the game mark mathot saw the recipe which is toronto guy goes to vancouver and shits on the leafs and said what if we did that but here and now he's trying that in ottawa so i don't know if he's a toronto guy the one thing that we do need to talk about is
Starting point is 01:08:59 is not matt murray oh he's not good for him listen we know matt murray is not good this year we know the defense in front of him is not good but matt murray is really bad and there's three more years and a lot of money left on that contract 6.25 million dollars a year so if mark method is to be believed as soon as that contract expires the senators will be good now the the uh the other thing is this was the year that these the senators were supposed to be an elite team this is what eugene melnick said their plan was remember the boreatsky interview that was this was the year that they were going to enter status no he's not here anymore doesn't count right he's not here anymore so takes these backsies also you can't fault them for the matt murray deal because going
Starting point is 01:09:46 in it looked like a great deal like i think we even said on this podcast that uh there were flags but you're right and i was pro matt murray jesse you're absolutely right i think you yeah you wanted to sign matt murray did you not adam i did i did it was my coldest take in the history of cold dates right but going it ottawa has to overpay for someone like matt murray so the number is going to be a little high but you don't want to you don't want to bet that this guy who won two stanley cups has just fallen off you know you want it you want to believe that there's still something in there and that maybe he can get his career restarted again in ottawa and he did going in and signing out. I was like,
Starting point is 01:10:23 that's not a bad deal. You know, you're Ottawa. You think you might got a number one goalie, but it just didn't work out. Here's the mistake that happens. Here's the mistake they made. Eric Engels had it so close to right because he was talking about basically they don't have any guys there to jump on grenades, right? So Boryetsky
Starting point is 01:10:40 leaves town. Who jumps on the grenades? And then they go out and they try to get like a Derek step on and Eric and Branson and they at least get some guys who can be vets. Matt Murray was at his best with Marc-Andre Fleury behind him. Then Tristan, well, his father passes, which is a huge, huge thing in his life, which we'll get to.
Starting point is 01:11:04 Tristan Jari is now the guy behind him. It's a guy his age. It's a lot different from having someone with the experience of Marc-Andre Fleury behind you. And now in Ottawa, he's got like Marcus Hogberg and like Joey Decord. I think Ottawa should have gone out and gotten a real good, real – well, not real good necessarily, but real experienced older backup for Matt Murray to lean on and ask questions and talk to just as he goes through the season.
Starting point is 01:11:40 Like, I was intrigued. Like a Mike Smith? Yes, honestly. It's weird to tell the guy who's won two Stanley Cups and played with guys like Crosby and Malkin and Letang, hey, we need to bring in a guy to get you to learn more. Not even learn more. Matt Murray's 26 and been in the league and won everything.
Starting point is 01:12:00 He should know by now. And I think you expect him to know that, and you don't go into that being like, nah, we need backup for Matt Murray. It's not even that. Learning is not linear. um and you know i'll i'll just be crushing it i'll be doing great at something and one day i i freaking i i don't know i'm not feeling myself i don't have it and i want to talk to somebody
Starting point is 01:12:26 you know and it's not necessarily about like oh i just got something to learn i just i need to talk to someone yeah they have coaching staffs and goalie coaches and head coaches and there Well, it's Ottawa. They might have won. It might be the media, the social media guy. But still, I don't think just because Matt Murray needs to learn doesn't mean you need to go sign a backup goalie who's old. No, but look at it this way.
Starting point is 01:12:54 The Flames, the Habs invested a lot of money in Carey Price. And they did something that I criticized at the time, but I think it makes more sense the more I look at it. They're like, all right, we're going to maximize this asset by getting him all the support we can get. And they go out and they get Jake Allen, who is a real, real good backup in this league. And we know he can't do too much more than that.
Starting point is 01:13:21 He can, you know, maybe for a few weeks to a month in a pinch, but real good backup goalie, guy you could bounce ideas off of, guy who will support you, but also a guy who will push you. but i think that ended up being a really good thing for them if matt murray is not carrying the sense they got nothing they got like uk it's unreasonable to expect decord and hogberg to be stealing you games night in and night out yeah but they don't have jake allen money they can't they can't spend 10 million on the goalie they can't even spend to the salary cap there's 16
Starting point is 01:14:00 million under because they have their own internal budget so you're you're hamstrung by the situation you're in and they took a chance which brings me to this um so i referenced jake allen i look at matt murray and i don't maybe he's got some sort of long-term injury that we don't know about or maybe he's aggravated something but what i think is more likely is remember jake allen was like he was real real good next big thing and one day he did not have it like the mon stars went and visited a blues game and just went you are no longer good at being a goalie like he was bad he was real bad for a while and he went away and he went away to get his head looked at basically did to get his mind right i don't remember if you went and saw a therapist
Starting point is 01:14:50 or a sports psychologist or something but it ended up being a big thing for his career and getting him back on track and with matt murray i don't i don't see a guy who doesn't have the physical ability anymore as an athlete i see a guy who maybe needs to maybe needs to take a minute and get his head right there's no minute as the guy right you can't take time off as the guy um but i just see him play and like i what intrigued me is he he was out there for all seven goals and i think it's i think the entire time he was out there like dj smith is not an fu type of coach i'm sure he wasn't like oh i'm gonna leave him in there as a lesson maybe he did i don't think so um you know from his time in toronto we we learned that he was like the buffer
Starting point is 01:15:42 between the players and babcock he was the make you feel good guy right so i don't think he would do that to matt murray i think matt murray was out there looking for answers he's trying to play through it right um and it's it's not working playing through it is not working maybe it is like he had one real shit game against the oilers but he had a bunch of other like decently solid games he had one pretty good one against the least i seem to remember i i don't know maybe he does just play through it but i i think it'd be nice for him to have a minute to maybe talk to somebody um the other thing we're assuming a lot about memory i think okay well it's it's it's fair i mean the other option is he's no longer good at this yeah right what are the
Starting point is 01:16:33 too young to be no longer good at this so i would agree with you there i would agree with you there and listen there's lots of players that have gone to sports psychologists and sometimes it's not that there's something wrong it's that you can make it more right right you can you can tweak things or maybe it's a goaltending coach i mean look at look at the islanders and their goaltending coach and how he's turned their careers around of robin robin letter and simeon varlamov and you know person thomas grice and all these guys that were sort of okay but they weren't great and then they turned them into beasts now i do the reason i brought up the ottawa senators actually was not to bring up matt murray and the reason from what i have seen watching the ottawa senators i don't
Starting point is 01:17:10 understand like dj smith will bench a guy he's not a fuck you guy but he will bench a guy the one guy he refuses simply to bench which i'm shocked by is erica branson and i wonder if it's just because we know what erica branson is and that's what he is but he is extra bad he has not help the team in my estimation at all and i'm not certain that he's an nhl player anymore that's a guy where i think you if you continue to give a player like that ice time and the amount of responsibility that erica branson is supposed to hold and i understand like you know eric angle said fall guy so maybe he's the fall guy erica branson is not good enough to be the fall guy anymore you know every like he is just to me anyway i it's unfathomable some of the plays
Starting point is 01:18:03 that he makes if he makes them at all and i'm not certain why he was even brought in to be honest other than to fill a spot as guy it just does not make a whole lot of sense to me it's like players teams that sign jack johnson same thing i don't get it it's it's this these guys that were drafted high the game either the game has passed them by their skills are no longer relevant or they're diminished and they're getting by on reputation alone i don't the numbers for eric branson do not support the amount of ice time he gets even in ottawa and i'm surprised at dj smith of all the guys that he's not hard on it's eric and branson this guy if you're if you're wanting your players to learn if you're wanting your players to absorb information from a vet is that
Starting point is 01:18:45 the guy it's a good point you're bringing up i wonder defenders are able to do things that other players can't right uh i think i think a lot of players adam you can help me out with this like i think a lot of players when they're younger are made defenders just because they're one of the better players on the team yeah they can skate or no or you're or you can shoot and they make you a forward there you go so i wonder is there a potential career path here for a guy like eric branson to be part of ottawa's bottom six like is he an nhl defender anymore no probably not can he skate on an nhl team i'm willing to bet he can i'm willing to bet he can like i'm surprised that doesn't happen more like just guys
Starting point is 01:19:40 who are you know they're clearly good hockey players but maybe not the best defenders in the world make them a forward make them a forward think of all the guys you've been like ah let's give them a shot on the fourth line by calling them up from the minors why don't you do that with defenders who are already on your team you know like what what's what confused me about the few times the leafs have played um uh 11 forward 7d is they never once were like all right uh who's the fourth line boyd spezza and dermot over the boards like i'd be interested to see it and if you got a guy there to speak to the officials to be a voice on the bench um and to plan less than 10 minutes a night who's playing less than 10 minutes why not put them
Starting point is 01:20:30 why not have him on the fourth line i don't disagree i'm just trying to get creative spitball yeah yeah and uh yeah i know brannistrom's kind of fallen out of uh favor there but it's sort of like he can't be worse than what good branson is right you'd have to that's a guy that you traded for mark you traded mark stone for him make it work make it work yeah if dj smith doesn't like him well dj man you better better start taking him out for dates because you're gonna have to like him this is the ottawa senator's market this is not the toronto maple leafs market where you can you can still buy your way out of certain problems i'm shocked by that all the reports i read on that where it's like well he's just maybe not a fan you can't afford not to be a
Starting point is 01:21:16 fan dj smith i'm looking at this player not work make him work i'm looking at his ahl numbers and even actually his swiss league numbers from this year he had eight points in 10 games in switzerland and he had 23 in 27 last year with belville i would love to know how much of that was on the power play and i think a big thing that a lot of offensive defensemen go through when they first join the league is some of them get the opportunity and a lot of them don't though you know we saw it with tyson berry like they forced the square peg into a round hole there by putting them on the number one power play they did not have to do that they did that as a favor to him right because morgan riley is right there with brandstrom uh i mean thomas shabbat's there
Starting point is 01:22:06 forever and ever amen is he not like at best i'm gonna get second yeah yep it's interesting well anyway it'll be very interesting to see what happens with the senators they do have a watchable product they do have a team that seems to love each other uh and of the kachuk brothers i think uh brady gets more support than day or than i almost called him daniel kachuk again uh flames in the kachuk name seriously uh brady gets a lot more support i would think uh it'd be interesting to see what happens with the flames and by the way um mike stevens texted me and i i guess um him and rachel talked about this on the uh staff and graph podcast daryl sutter didn't know this but apparently was like a coursey god before they existed and that those
Starting point is 01:22:51 early 2010s la teams were possession possession possession possession possession all the time and so that would really benefit the flames and play to their strengths so if i was wrong on daryl sutter good for them because that's the kind of hockey that i think that they're going to need to play but what's going to help is if they start liking each other which i'm not sure they do fair the last time uh the nhl was on espn by the way daryl sutter was coach of the calgary flames really yeah it was game six wasn't it the last game they broadcast was the calgary game where uh uh game six it would have been the conference finals where they won and they went to the went to the finals or they lost i forget what game it was but daryl sutter was head coach that's wow
Starting point is 01:23:37 Trying to remember who they beat. Oh, wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Wow. What? He's just very excited. Yeah, I'm just like Jack to be here. I think, okay, who ripped off who?
Starting point is 01:23:55 Did Belichick get there first or did Sutter get there first? The answer is Paul Maurice. Paul Maurice actually talks though. Sutter and Belichick, one word answers. Yep. Nope. No, for sure. And answering the phone like this. All you get is nostrils trying to press the button.
Starting point is 01:24:19 Got a good look at his chin, for sure. Jesse, let's do the press conference a little early today, shall we? Sure. The Presser SDP. The Steve Dangle Press Conference. We definitely can. We can start off with a question for you, Adam. it's uh a mini adam's history corner slash if you'd like to rant on this subject um oliver uh dan dono oliver dono i'm gonna call him uh said i'd love an adam history corner about daylight savings time and god and why they should stop using it since it's this weekend
Starting point is 01:24:58 well go ahead adam okay so i don't know a whole lot on the history of the subject but my understanding was it was instituted in world war ii to um save power somehow and i don't know how that worked but it was like to save coal because there was a lot of like coal powered stuff back then and and anyway it was basically so that people during light daylight hours uh would be at work and you shift you shift it one hour or the other because not you know work started at eight or whatever and you wanted it to be bright then so that you weren't using coal to power electricity when you didn't need to and you could send it overseas to fight Germany or whatever it was. I believe that was the thing. And then it kind of just stuck. But the the thing that I think
Starting point is 01:25:43 there's a bipartisan motion right now in the House in the United States that's asking to get rid of it. And Ontario has already voted to get rid of it. But we have to wait for Quebec and New York state because we are on the same power grid as they are. And so until they switch, we can't switch. As soon as they switch, then we'd be okay. And the great thing about the American bill is it's a national bill, which means that it would be instituted across the country. And what it would mean is that your summertime hours would stay the same throughout the year. And there's a lot of reasons to do this. There's a ton of studies that have been done on this. And one of the things that, that, you know, uh, that is, you know, clear insurance companies talk about it
Starting point is 01:26:28 even is the amount of accidents, the amount of deaths, the amount of heart attacks, the amount of, uh, uh, seasonal depression, a whole bunch of things goes up because you're not supposed to, we didn't know what a circadian rhythm was in world war two, but you're not supposed to fuck with yourself like that. Imagine like when you go to bed, we usually go to bed around the same time every day. Imagine I said, now you got to go to bed an hour later and wake up at the same time. That's going to fuck with you. And as you get older, especially that can really mess with your health. We're realizing how important sleep is. So my rant is always this. It's dumb that we're doing it. It's ridiculous that it's taken this long to get rid of it, despite overwhelming
Starting point is 01:27:09 evidence that it absolutely needs to change and needs to stop. And I want to shout out one province in particular who had it right and who's had it right this entire damn time and everybody always makes fun of them there's some of the nicest people in the country and that is saskatchewan who does not have daylight savings they keep their damn clocks the same all year round and aren't they the happiest motherfuckers you've ever seen in your life so it always confused the hell out of me when i was uh uh producing that junior hockey radio show is one day oh that their office isn't open yet shit right yeah yeah dude always screwed with me always and it would take me like a month to figure it out yeah it's uh so that you know i i think jesse if this bill passes
Starting point is 01:27:55 um new york will switch and that will force quebec to switch because new york new york's gonna be like oh we're not waiting on you canadians we're doing it yeah and quebec will be like well i guess we have to and ontario's like great um you know it's kind of what it's like living next to the states. It's like, oh, we're going to do this. And the rest of us are like, okay, I guess they're going to do that. So we got to react to that. So I think that's the one interesting bill outside of all the pandemic stuff that has happened in the Ontario government in the last year is that for some reason, between N95 masks and vaccines and everything else, they found time to vote on this. And basically everybody agreed with it. Nobody's against it.
Starting point is 01:28:35 And I think in the States, it's the same. It's the one thing the Republicans and Democrats can actually agree on literally there you go one thing they found it we found it next joe biden bringing the people together next question comes from travis duncan they want to know does gary betman watch old footage and travis quote tweeted greg wischinski who quotes gary betman as saying i don't believe there's tanking in the nhl which is the quote from betman's media conference today that seems to be making the biggest rounds on Twitter. Bettman said today, I don't believe there's tanking in the NHL. Can you guys talk a little about this?
Starting point is 01:29:17 Yeah, I'm just going to say what I always say when Gary Bettman speaks. You do not need to listen to him. I don't know why. Okay, I want to know the people. I want to know the people who see Gary Bettman go, there's no tanking in hockey. And they go, oh, okay, there's no tanking in hockey. and I want them stripped of their license
Starting point is 01:29:39 because I don't feel safe being on the road with them how dumb do you have to be to believe that I hate I hate when this guy talks he's just he's the most lawyery lawyer to ever lawyer and there's nothing wrong with lawyers but Jesus turn
Starting point is 01:29:55 it off once in a while have an honest conversation for once there's no you know your league is the Buffalo Sabres right shut up shut up there's no tanking get out of here then why do we change the draft rules every two years there's no shut up god this guy makes me vomit sometimes adam remember he's a lawyer and that's his job oh he's the nhl's hired lawyer and by the way at eight million dollars a year they're
Starting point is 01:30:26 getting a steal because he works for them 365 24 7 that guy i mean when you when you you ever worked with a lawyer long-term on anything it's very expensive the nhl has got a they got a nice delicious deal on this guy uh and and he answers the questions properly every time you almost have to respect it because it doesn't have to be the truth it's just what the owners want to put out there almost but i don't every question to gary bedman at one of these press conferences should be hey i have a question and then i'll let you answer it and i have a follow-up so gary and then he gives his bullshit answer and then the follow-up should be are you serious every time make it makes it there's no tanking in the nhl explain yourself show your work
Starting point is 01:31:12 show show how you show the mental gymnastics you use to get to this lie oh and the next time that the nhl and the players association go head to head gary will be out there telling you why guaranteed contracts are bad for the players and he'll mean every word of it oh i bet he will yep how do you shut it i think that's what's by the way i think that's what's next they're gonna keep the hard cap i know i think they're gonna try to get rid of um they're gonna get they're gonna go after contract length and then i think they're gonna go after guaranteed contracts you watch gonna be 10 years but we'll see jesse next question uh at name tags points out hey tomorrow is uh steve's birthday and today is rudy gobert
Starting point is 01:31:58 anniversary steve how has it been a a year since rudy gobert touched a bunch of mics and then got covid and your birthday how has it been for you this year well so i remember march 11th i was shooting a bunch of stuff at sports net and when we had begun shooting it was announced rudy gobert had it by the time we had finished shooting it was announced the utah jazz game was canceled and by the time i got home that night the nba season had been postponed then i woke up the next morning on oh sorry and later that night tom hanks had it so then i went to bed woke up the next morning it was difficult to go to bed because the news was just over and over and over again the further we got into march 12th 2020 uh the more we were like why the why the hell
Starting point is 01:32:48 has the nhl not postponed its season the leafs were set to play the predators that night in toronto i think um and i just remember i went uh you know they called it the darkest day in sports i'm like oh cool my my birthday now has the distinction of being the anniversary of the darkest day in sports um and i went to my parents house um and um i don't know maybe i shouldn't have but we didn't really get it yet and uh i had i remember sl got me cookies and i took a picture holding one above my head and then i stayed inside for like a month until i went down i've been downtown like three times since this all happened one of them was a month later to go to adam's front porch and literally wave at him and that was it and then i didn't see you guys in person for
Starting point is 01:33:45 i don't even know how long so this is my second covid birthday happy birthday to me yep and jesse's and i's are coming up real soon yep so that'll be fun but we're out of lockdown ish now so that's good right you can get haircuts now right no not yet no no no man no that's why we don't have them well pays to be in durham getting one next week it's gonna be great does some things until don't worry if there's a new shutdown i'll find out from the person who cuts my hair because that's how i found out about the last one i found out from them before the government she's she's like hey just letting you know this is coming and i'm like okay and then the next day it's on the news i'm like are you what the business is the heads up or something
Starting point is 01:34:38 i don't know i don't know uh do you guys want another question sure this comes from uh boot master ben ben webb let's talk about breakfast he writes on twitter oh now finally a subject i can talk about what's your breakfast hierarchy between french toast waffles pancakes and omelets french toast pancakes omelets and what did i miss waffles waffles french toast waffles pancakes and omelets french toast waffles pancakes and omelets okay i'm gonna throw out a very unpopular opinion omelets on the bottom um because i'm a very simple omelet man but i don't know i don't know who makes these decisions but who decided bell peppers were a staple of omelets
Starting point is 01:35:33 who decided well they're cheap and that's why restaurants put them in they're easy oh man oh listen without that you just put onion and cheese and like bacon or something in them oh but then you gotta throw in bell peppers and then there are some restaurants where you say no bell peppers and you can still taste it because they've been cooking bell peppers on the grill all day that's how much i hate them so omelet at the bottom for me then waffles for some reason i'm not as huge a fan french toast is just a glorified dessert it's silly and pancakes god i love pancakes they're so good it's all really dessert except for omelets but yeah them are dessert the savory omelets in amsterdam oh my god oh i want one right now in my life and that was your
Starting point is 01:36:26 you had it at the bottom no pancakes did i say omelet pancakes were at the top yeah i said bottom yeah you were like oh i really i wanted a savory omelet but that was your last pick so did i say savory savory pancake oh okay sorry savory pancakes rasmus tristelainen rasmus ristelainen i can't talk sorry jesse what's yours on my job uh what is mine hmm okay first i have french toast i adore french toast i think it's absolutely delicious okay that's that's one two i will go with pancakes three waffles
Starting point is 01:37:12 and then you have waffles higher you of all people yeah it's my dog but it's not my food and then no I'm gonna put omelets then waffles a good omelet is waffles a little overrated
Starting point is 01:37:27 because it's not fun enough as the other choices you know like with french toast like you said is is freaking dessert you're having dessert for breakfast that's that's my number one pick i'm going with the one that's just eating cake in the morning so i'm going to go with the cake this is my number one pick and then yeah when i go down the line go to pancakes pancakes are so much fun because they're fluffy and they're just they're like a sponge cake like i pick the next best best cake as my number two i have the sponge cake where you put a bunch of sugar on top and
Starting point is 01:37:56 and then sometimes you overload it with um with whipped cream which is just more sugar and then you put some fruit on or whatever and then you get to omelets omelets are nice because they're they're it's like okay it's this hearty meal and you feel like you're kind of healthy even though it's not really healthy at all it's still it's this egg and this ham like i like lots of meat in my omelets and it's it's supposed to be pretend healthy and then you get to waffles which has no it's it's a worse version of all the other ones kind of like i'm not like i'm not i don't really put an egg on my my waffle to make it reasonable healthy quote-unquote and i don't put a bunch of sugar on it to make it cake enough and then it's not fun so that's why it's number four for me i
Starting point is 01:38:39 don't need syrup to pool in a grid on top of what i'm eating i want it to soak in into the pancake it's not as fun as a pancake so adam what are what's your four okay hey guys so here's the deal here's the deal waffles are fourth i'm working my way up from not good to waffles are fourth And the reason we agree on that is, is Jesse, you made a really good, a ton of really good points there. The only time I've had waffles and I've been like, ah, I will have these again. And Jesse, you were here for this. We went to a restaurant called Starving Artist, uh, at Davisville, uh, in, in, in Toronto
Starting point is 01:39:13 and they're all over Toronto. They're all, okay. So that one was at the Davisville location. They make them out of potatoes. Those are really good. You have an egg on top. It's savory. See, I don't, as a starving artist, I don't count their potato waffles as waffles.
Starting point is 01:39:25 those are hash browns that are just baked super fun in a waffle form and then and that's why they're so damn good you know oh it's so starving artist is amazing you need to go uh number number uh three on this one and i don't i don't say this to disparage because i do enjoy it french toast french toast for me is very very good but it isn't elite caliber you can you can make it really great but I find French toast, your options are limited. You know, French toast is sort of like, it's always sort of the same. It's, it's, you got your big fat piece of bread. You put it in egg, you put it in a bunch of butter, you fry it on both sides. You put some berries on top of that and a little bit of syrup. And there you go. And that's great for some people. But for me,
Starting point is 01:40:07 I like to get creative, which is why guys, I'm going to put pancakes at number two. pancake at number two. Okay. So my, the American listeners among us will understand exactly what I'm talking about. And sometimes you eat at a restaurant and you're like, I don't, every time you see that restaurant come up in the headlines, you're like, I'm concerned that this is probably going to be bad. And with the cracker barrel, it is, but I have never in my life ever had better blueberry pancakes than i have at the sarasota i think it's sarasota or clear water cracker barrel blueberry pancakes they're thin they're enormous because it's america and you get about 18 of them and they are so damn good yeah so good i don't know what it is
Starting point is 01:40:58 about the imaginary line but there's something about ordering breakfast in the states where when they bring it to the table i'm like is this a threat and then when they put it on the table i'm like am i on a joke show you think one person's eating this jesus lord when i uh my my dad is lucky enough to have a little place down there with my stepmom uh when they retired they were able to get that and um when they when we go down or when i go down i take a i'll get on the airplane and they know the first thing we do when i get back or when i get down is i take an early flight and we drive directly to cracker barrel before we even get home that's the first thing i want to do i want to have some some pancakes at the damn cracker barrel because it is so good
Starting point is 01:41:40 and it's the most florida i've ever felt and it's amazing and you should try them at some point in your life now number one you're going how can you not take dessert at number one and i will tell you this eggs omelette specifically can be incredible but i have to agree with steve and with jesse on certain things number one we don't need to overload omelets with peppers don't know in fact i find Most, yeah, even a Western omelet that's supposed to have red pepper in it, minimize. It's supposed to be an accent. It isn't supposed to replace the eggs, right? And the other thing I want to say is onions.
Starting point is 01:42:15 For some reason, restaurants in, I don't know if it's the same in the States, but for some reasons they're like, oh, caramelized onions. And I'll get it and I can hear the onion crunch in my mouth. That is not a caramelized onion. You caramelize an onion by making it soft and delicious and brown. if it is still a white onion or still a yellow onion it is not caramelized get away from me with that bullshit but i don't want crunchy eggs exactly what i want on my omelet i want a little bit of caramelized onions and mushrooms i want a little pecorino cheese and i want a little arugula
Starting point is 01:42:48 sprinkled on afterwards delicious maybe a little garlic in there that is a delicious omelet that is why it's number one for me and it's the most filling for the longest you also don't feel as guilty because anytime you eat one of the other three you're like especially if you're a guy like me you got a bit of a tummy you're like i just added a few i just added a few pounds to my tummy whereas before you know when you when you're eating an omelet you're like yeah it's gonna power through the day now i'm gonna go crush some stuff even though i won't the healthiness didn't really it doesn't really factor into my decision making you know fair it's just all for the tasty it's also omelets are not a good hangover breakfast generally if i'm hungover
Starting point is 01:43:29 i'm like i need all these ingredients to be separate please in case i need to punch out at any moment but yeah there's something about there's something about uh it's no it's not something it's the bell peppers i know exactly what it is it's but i'm having difficulty in my brain separating omelets and bell peppers and that's fair because restaurants just go here's an omelet and 40 million different types of bell peppers it's wrong it's gross not disparaging it but uh there is a certain breakfast place in this country that just decided our thing is putting bell peppers in everything now and they started it like just one day who went nope not saying it but just one day they're like why not everything is bell peppers now why don't you just say it
Starting point is 01:44:13 yeah because i don't know what if they give me money someday well you could still say you don't have to like everything on their menu you didn't like listen when panago was our sponsor you didn't like any of their pizzas with bell peppers on yeah you don't like to make fun of it okay fine tim hortons puts bell peppers in every uh wrap because it's cheap so ask them not to put it in your app yeah but like i would never assume a breakfast wrap would have them and i remember biting into it on one road trip going what the like i i never would have expected it yeah there shouldn't be and then i go to pick them out and i'm like oh there's not one or two no one and the bag of bell peppers they cut up
Starting point is 01:44:55 them put in my wrap the bell peppers that you're getting at tim hortons are not the best bell peppers that are available no bell peppers are the worst all but you could you could yeah but like there are levels of bell pepper steve and there are ones that are water and there are ones with flavor and the tim hortons ones are not gonna have well adam they're not gonna have the flavor this bell pepper is from bell pepper in france so the only real bell peppers are there from this region in france and i would still hate them fair that's fair jess you would agree with me right yeah i think those bell peppers probably arrive in a bag pre-chopped and get sprinkled in the food you know they don't arrive as peppers at all no they're just they're they're there
Starting point is 01:45:37 here's another thing that's super weird about you so you guys you are you big fans of pre-wrapped sandwiches if you have to like if you're downtown you're like i gotta eat something you go to like us tim hortons or starbucks or whatever it's all wrapped in plastic and you grab and you go whatever what i cannot stand about pre-wrapped sandwiches is why they put lettuce on them because by the time the lettuce makes it to you it's that sloppy droopy almost disintegrating shit that soaks its way into the cheese and the bread as though it's a part of the mail but it's not a part of the mail it's just old shitty iceberg lettuce that's gross why do they bother just get rid of the why are we putting fresh lettuce on a sandwich that won't be eaten for four
Starting point is 01:46:21 days? I'm fine with knowing the sandwich is four days old, but stop, stop making me peel the lettuce off. I'm 32 years old. I don't want to be that guy in public peeling lettuce off his sandwich. And people are looking at him like, what the hell's wrong with that guy? Does he not eat vegetables? What the hell? And, and I know people judge you. They judge you when you pull lettuce off the sandwich, but I will not eat pre-wrapped lettuce sandwich. Gross. I'm not a pre-wrapped sandwich guy, but well, sometimes.
Starting point is 01:46:44 about the subject i'm it's been bugging me for years and then i got another one here's steve you'll love this i bought a sandwich the other day because we're meeting like pre-wrapped 15 minutes after our show ended we had a meeting so i'm like i gotta go get something so i go up to our cafeteria at bell media and they have a turkey sandwich i'm like oh turkey sandwich and i look in the in the wrapping thing i'm like doesn't look like there's any lettuce on it yes so i buy it and what do i find lettuce a red pepper that's this big like a slice of red pepper like a whole hat like a whole quarter of it ah i was like why i don't mind red peppers they're okay but i don't take it out yes but the whole sandwich tasted like it it's like the most accurate red pepper
Starting point is 01:47:36 turkey sandwich the most accurate bit family guy ever had is uh you order a pizza and uh-oh someone ordered a salad to go with their pizza and it's hey just cut it into quarters no leave the core in there leave that white part in there sorry hello every pizza place why would you do that why would i saw i saw a tiktok this guy's eating a sandwich and the caption is just the guy who invented mayo and he's just like hmm what if this tasted like shit well i okay i don't like mayo but you don't like mayo no not really i like mayo no i i can i like certain types of mayo if there's a smidge of it i don't like dripping with mayo get out of here one thing i do want to say one thing i do want to say on that subject steve
Starting point is 01:48:30 is the um we were talking about oh the cores leaving the cores in do you guys ever like if you if you're ever feeling like you go to subway or whatever submarine shop is near you and you're like okay i'm gonna get one but i'm gonna get veggies on my sandwich and then you look at their tomatoes and the big fat fucking core is in it why do they not pour a tomato just take that out you would never do that at home on the on the on the stem of a tomato take it out it's not quick boom i know i don't get it we accept less we need to start demanding that there are no cores in the tomatoes we need you know what it's a four dollar foot long i don't think we should what our expectations no no jesse the karens are right the karens are right we need to all
Starting point is 01:49:19 get the seagull hair and we need to go complain about our tomato course. Jesse, you were going to say something, weren't you? Do you still have something? I was just going to say to Steve's mayonnaise take, I think the majority of people enjoy mayo
Starting point is 01:49:35 then hate it. I think you're on the wrong side of history. Adam, do you agree? I think Steve's on the wrong side of history with mayonnaise. It's the base of so many other delicious things too, right? Because you can get like a chipotle mayo egg salad dressing. like it's all eggs totally mayo's fine eggs all those things are fine as long as the mayo isn't
Starting point is 01:49:54 overpowering too many people are just like i don't want no i'm not the biggest fan you know it's my favorite combo a little mayo a little mustard perfect perfect on a sandwich uh we're coming up on the anniversary of our hot dog eating contest oh i thought i yeah it was it would have been the pandemic like in april right end of april so we're coming up on that so i want to ask you guys how what's the perfect hot dog is that is that yours out of no my perfect hot dog is ketchup and mustard at a baseball game with a cold beer that's the only time i'll eat them i'll see i'll if it's a jay's game or another game i will eat it i'll i won't even buy a hot dog but i will eat one at the game uh because the one or two blue jays games i used to get two per year when we
Starting point is 01:50:44 are allowed to go to those that's what i would do and it like you want you don't want a strong like um high-end beer with a hot dog you need a bud light and it needs to be crisp and it needs to be 20 ounces and you need to have paid 48 for it and then you want um what like the dodger dogs or it's like wow these are legendary and they're like this big and they're like schneiders like anybody else but yeah ketchup and mayo that's all you start ketchup and mustard is all you need on a good hot dog i like i'm thinking front street hot dog stand i'm going full phil kessel here i need uh i like the spicy mustard if it's available um i do like a little bit of onion and or sauerkraut actually oh big fan i do that if it's a sausage if it's a sausage i'm all about
Starting point is 01:51:32 the sauerkraut well see that's the thing i'm usually getting the i mean if it's if it's hot dog or sausage available listen i'm i had a i've had a good year folks and i'm gonna pony up the extra 50 cents to get it from a hot dog to an italian sausage at the hot dog stand on front street 50 instead of 375 listen guys i'm a youtuber i don't know if you heard so when i get hot dogs i get the full-on italian sausage yeah yeah i had a real good year folks he just looks at the he just looks at the hot dog guy goes 100 000 subs yeah 100k so what did you say to me uh what's actually it's over 140 but i mean you know who's counting am i right anyway uh i'm gonna sign your hot dog carton mustard jesse what's yours what do you do uh i like ketchup
Starting point is 01:52:29 mayonnaise and relish that's my perfect really yeah yeah and i like uh my favorite hot dog is barbecued at a home barbecue so somebody's somebody's backyard somebody's house or even like on your stove barbecue thingy like that's my favorite kind of hot dog you buy you bought it at long goes and it's one of the the fancy hot dogs they're just good hot put slits in it you gotta you gotta pretend you're professional like that's the whole half of grilling is pretending you know how to cook you know it's like okay this is just gonna char under some fire but like i'm a griller i know what i'm doing yeah you do the little slits and you you grill it up and you make it look nice you know what i'm looking forward to when this all this bullshit is over
Starting point is 01:53:13 someone who's on the barbecue just handing things out with reckless abandon they don't even know who the next hot dog's for right this is the way the hot dogs are made and i'm handing them out they don't even look up at you and oh yes and you're not hand sanitizing every time you touch a plate no no and i want to shake the chef's hand when i lived in calgary there was this really cool sort of hipster hot dog place that's still open called tubby dog and i want to run through some of the combinations for you here before we go can we do that do it you will not believe what you can get on these hot dogs and they're really really good so the first one your typical tubby dog chili bacon cheese onions mustard by the way if you get a nice chili dog in the states i don't
Starting point is 01:53:53 know what's different about the chili dogs there versus here chili dog in the states so flipping good so good uh then there's the cheetah one so sauerkraut cheese mustard relish yogi bear mustard ketchup relish onion but let's let's let's get into a little bit crazier here okay they got the uh pb and j hot dog peanut butter and jelly and you add captain crunch and then there's the sumo it's legal here japanese mayo wasabi pickled uh ginger lightly toasted sesame street seaweed wait you're talking about a place in calgary yeah oh so you can be baked there okay never mind sorry okay so now i get it yeah i understand now then there's sherm's ultimate gripper which is
Starting point is 01:54:42 a hot dog wrapped and then deep fried wrapped in bacon and then deep fried topped with ham homemade chili cheese mustard bacon hot peppers onions and a fried egg i have had that and it is outrageous so good you have to eat it with a knife and fork anyway no i'm not i'm not signed up for that i i agree with you on the setting i need to it needs to be in my hands i'm not having hot dog with a knife and fork who do you think i am get out of here if i can't have it in my hands it's got too much shit in it fair enough all right well we'll wrap it there thank you so much for listening as always can i uh we can i can i say one thing to everybody who made uh made it to the very very end of the podcast you get something very special tomorrow on instagram at uh during
