the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake yeah baby
yeah yeah yeah where were you when craig marume said wake the fuck up wake up in my basement go
hunting let's hunt were you watching in your basement yeah why aren't you watching the living
room oh no he has to get loud i have to yeah there's people sleeping upstairs yeah also i
bet the lucky couch is down there jesse you know the least lucky couch no that's that i think that's
long done is that good yeah yeah no like seven straight times i don't know i don't know if you
can still count on the luck there i abandoned the idea that where i put my ass affects anything
yeah oh that's good i'm glad i'm glad we got to that point now uh before we get to all the stuff
that i want to get to i want to remind you that the oshawa generals peterborough pete's steve
angle podcast night is coming up uh you're gonna get to watch ben danford and winnipeg jets first
round pick colby barlow just traded there yeah and a whole bunch of other great players in oshawa
with us the sdp will be in one section well we have a couple sections actually so based on the
ticket amounts we have the tickets are 40 bucks you get to go to the game and you get to come to
the bar and and do the thing afterwards and jesse you actually checked out the venue yeah and you
said it was sick oh yeah yeah the place we'll be doing the live event it's like across the street
from the arena it is so cool it just opened this year they gave me a little tour of the whole thing
it's like three floors they have a couple different venues and funnily enough offset is
gonna be playing there on the same night no not the same night i'm just gonna say we might not
outdraw him after i think it's it might be before it might be like coming up soon but it's like
around us offset is gonna be there in one of the venues for um the school that's there that's their
like frosh thing they're bringing offset to oshawa what who's the school jess uoit yeah i don't know
whatever the university there is in oshawa university oh yeah they're bringing so we're
playing the same venue except not the same room so we're opening for offset essentially okay yeah
it's not bad we're on we're in the basement one which is it's so sick it's gonna be one of our
best setups ever you'll see it if you can't be there live you'll watch it on camera afterwards
because we always post our live shows but offsets on the like second floor one which is this bigger
venue and i don't know how they fit it in there you know you walk in you're like oh my god there's
a giant stage and everything so it's awesome okay yeah i love it i didn't know i had so much info
on that no i love that oshawa loves a live show they do you know what that i wish that we had
more of that downtown because i love a live show and oshawa seems to be the only place that they're
happening anymore i once saw my dad play yeah yeah an atomic tomb whenever there's like something
going on like st patrick's day or something it's like oh come see this live band and there's 40
million of them and they're all in oshawa and oh and i miss that like halifax is like that every
day love a live band it's give me a live band it was last night offset played for the durham
college students uh durham college durham college they brought offset to their frosh week and it
was last night so that's sick offset open for us wow okay how lucky for him what was the more
popular opening act uh for a live show that we've done offset for upcoming for us he opened for us
he opened for us offset cardi b's ex-husband yeah i was a member of the migos the former
migos isn't around anymore but that's right if anybody doesn't know he opened for us yes
um or is opening for us um or our greta live show we had two of the vanderpump rule guys
oh jack taylor and tom schwartz yeah jack schwartz and uh jacks taylor tom schwartz my girlfriend
freaked out we went a couple weeks beforehand to check out the venue take some pictures and all
that and then we saw the poster on the wall and i sent it to my girlfriend gabby and she freaked
out like she's like why are you guys doing this it's the money must be so good oh the money's
insane yeah i don't know how any of those guys are still friends yeah because like schwartz his
best friend just minked like jacks right in the forehead yeah but that was season one man no it
was a good punch that was the money the money is a long time yeah the money's amazing yeah the
money's crazy so those guys show up they do an hour and they walk away with thousands and thousands
of dollars so are they bigger than offset uh no i think offset would be a lot worth a lot more
because offset's gonna have to bring equipment and all that stuff too yeah and he's probably
like there's probably more going on when offset comes to town does that make sense
it's also a school paying for it so like you know when the schools pay for it it's like the casino
the casino roots those guys those bands that play casinos those rates are like double what they
would be if i went on tour the thing about the school paying for it i was a part of a school
student association that were you really made i wasn't a part of the association but i was a
member of the school that made
news across
Canada. I think I remember that. We paid for
Drake to come to our school.
You don't remember when the Ryerson
Student Union got investigated because
we spent money wildly?
That one kid who was spending it on himself?
And we brought Drake to Frosh Week.
It was not good.
Durham College Student Association,
I hope you're doing the right thing when you're
spending all this money on our set. You are.
Have fun. Enjoy this. This time
in your life is so short. Spend that
money who cares who cares yeah say your phone to steal yeah exactly well listen listen let's be
honest it's not like these schools aren't making like insane profits all the time i'm sorry you're
gonna have you're gonna have to really twist my arm to get me to feel bad about any post-secondary
education institute and their money remember how you gave us a big old bunch of tuition yeah could
you continue to yeah long after yeah why don't you become a member of the alumni it's only the
same as tuition no the the ryerson student union uh once had a credit card bill of 250 000
for a break just overall is that even possible that was that's i'm just reading the cbc headline
so everybody's aware of what happened they kept going to salad king that's a lot of a lot of
salad king um hey joining us on the show today uh a little bit later will be frank corrado uh
Former Leaf, former Penguin, former Canuck, and also currently of TSN.
Yes.
Friend of the show.
Who stole him.
He was a member on, he went on VIP this summer for anybody who is a member or a new member
of VIP, because there's obviously streams going on.
Steve's got one Saturday.
I've got one Monday.
Both are Leaf games, by the way.
Steve's got Leafs Rangers.
I've got Leafs Lightning.
And, you know, there's a lot of new members that come out of watching those streams.
So if you are a new member, go back and check out the Michael Bublé episode, the Frank
Corrado episode.
there's more great guests and and all that stuff coming up too so um i wanted to say this and this
was pointed out to me by one of our listeners on instagram so before we start anything before we
talk about chief okay we need to talk about this all right and it's will will no actually it wasn't
will it was somebody else it was david sorry will david said this hey adam adam those aren't even
close because they were right under each other on my instagram instagram does not make organizing
your dms easy you guys know this you know this so david said hey guys or hey adam i was listening
to the pod the other day and it was steve going through all the captains right uh-huh what i do
wrong and i said i said oh no honors lee's not with the islanders anymore is he which sounds
really stupid but then and it was david said i think you're talking about andre lee the guy on
the kings for the kings that's exactly what i thought the second i saw him yes i was like
so there is an honors lee and an andre lee and i got a dot lee and i was like oh and for whatever
reason that registered my head is it must be anders lee and i will do no investigation further
on it and that's the way to go that's what happened how did you how did you think andre
lee because it was free agency and there was a lot going on yeah but he didn't sign in free agency
But there was something with him.
He's a Kings draft pick, and this has played five career games.
No, they're the same.
Exactly.
That's the seventh round pick that made the NHL, sir.
From 2019.
I don't know when it would have come up.
Maybe did he re-up his deal?
I think so.
Maybe his ELC expired.
Because he played three years with the Reign, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, maybe the ELC.
Expired, excuse me.
I can check Puckpedia for that.
Anyway, Andre Lee, my apologies.
From Karlstad, Sweden.
oh yeah it looks like he signed a new rfa deal here so there you go yeah see yeah all right good
old puck p all right as i said it registered my head and i did zero investigation afterwards hence
why i said what i said the other thing i want to say confidence too like i was like yeah maybe they
don't have andersley uh i'm gonna try i can't find the guy that sent it to me but i do want to
shout him out because i'm not gonna get the name wrong call him will no ryan yeah there's one one
One or the other.
Somebody reached out to me, and they were like,
listen, I don't want to blow your ego up here.
But I think Jake Markstrom was listening to the show on Wednesday.
Because we were talking about, and it was a silly topic,
as often it is.
We were talking about, I said,
if any goalie ever got to two goals in a season,
because we had a goalie goal earlier this week,
that would be crazy.
But if anybody ever got to three,
That would be impossible to ever replicate again.
The equivalent of scoring 276 goals.
Yeah, for context, there's never been two goalie goals by different people in a season.
Right, 17 all time.
The fact that you're asking for one person to do it twice is impossible.
The fact that you're asking for one person to do it three times is even more impossible.
I want it.
Here's what I'm here to say.
I said at the time, I'm like, the guy I want to try to do it is Jake Markstrom.
100%.
Because Jake Markstrom was the inspiration for what?
if you're a goaltender
why he never
does it he just gets out he just gets
out all the time Jake Markstrom God
bless him last night versus Montreal
had a bit of a shot at a
goal and look what happened
Jake this went
completely underreported and I'm shocked
because why not go for it here's
Jake Markstrom and no he does not
pass it I don't know why I said Montreal it's
Ottawa passes
it's by everybody
it gets stopped at like center ice he did go for it though and i just want to say shout out jake
markstrom listener no here he is angle podcast doing his thing trying yeah now here's what i
thought when i saw this replay that's i believe josh norris there uh i thought he would have
passed it right to josh norris and let josh norris go you are you want to hit here no on the number
nine number nine am i wrong here yeah anyway whoever's jake either one you are a nut he's
nuts like why would you not ring that around the boards there's two forwards jumping in on you like
there are times where it's okay to go for it that ain't one of them yeah yeah yeah
if if you tether him to the blue paint top five goalie in the show i think i think if you can't
do it you said the same thing about peter barazic when he was playing in toronto if you could just
put a bungee cord on from his pants to the back post he had no concept of where the goalposts
were right no idea i've never seen a goalie like it oh neither did sammy in his worst moments in
his best moments he was good anyway shout out to jake this might have gone underreported because
last night was one of those nights when you couldn't watch any of the games um the edmonton
game was a regional blackout for anybody anybody in the toronto area you couldn't watch ottawa
because it was on tsn so it was a local game uh you couldn't watch uh edmonton it was a local game
so this sports not to block it out and i think it was the vancouver game as well i couldn't watch
now if you have the sports net uber uber fat package can you watch those games i think there's
away on sportsnet now too but i don't i don't get i don't have that right yeah so stream east
sportsnet not yet is what it should be called it's uh it's very annoying watch everything yet
it's very annoying when there's three games uh featuring canadian teams and you can't
watch any of them and they're good teams and they're good games you want to see them
and i wanted to see conor mcdavid's first school and the most annoying things when you have the
channel and you can't nothing else can be shown on the channel so like on on the tsn when they're
showing the ottawa game like i can't watch anything on that channel that's just no it just
just says you can't watch this like it has music and shit like you're like why yeah it's annoying
the other thing uh sports that does it makes me feel very alone is when i'm streaming through the
app when they go to their local commercial breaks you'll see the national ones when they go to their
local commercial breaks it'll just go sports net plus commercials in progress and there's like no
music so you go from loud hockey gmc truck truck truck and then i know and we're all just sitting
there looking at each other how about you sit there and be alone with your thoughts yeah it's
2024 i don't do that shit anymore you know who else weird shit is i don't know if you ever watch
a baseball game on apple plus or apple yeah there's no uh there's nothing that happens in
between the innings so why do they do that like all they show is it's like a camera and it goes
back and forth pans across the the thing and i'm like okay give me a commercial or have the
announcers talk no let them talk no it's so it can't it's the most odd decision i've ever seen
yeah i've never seen anything like that in sports so day one of broadcasting school they're like
never swear in the booth never ever swear in the recording booth wherever you are
um less of a problem now yes except the moment these shows go off air it's you know ray ferraro
somebody fucking go man that was a stupid fucking play that was really fucking that's why they don't
leave it on yes because the moment they're like and we're off air it's like they just go fuck oh
Okay, sorry.
I just had to get the fuck release valve.
You can't have the announcers talking between the innings
because you can't have them on air for two and a half hours straight.
I think that'd be a little much.
But the idea should be air something.
Put two more people.
Steve Dangle podcast clips.
Why are you just airing nothing, Apple?
Put a panel in there.
Yeah.
Right?
Anything.
Have an intermission panel.
No, literally anything.
Anything.
Other than nothing.
Run Apple TV promos for the new.
Like sugar.
that's the detective show i'm convinced nobody's ever watched but they're getting a season two
anyway show the race that's totally real the what section is the loudest i'm cheering for the green
blue jay yeah and then it's all like the and then you win like i don't know a coupon or something
show that i'm entertained by that um anything anything anything um so listen jesse i've sent
you a second a second link and i want you to bring it up because i need to know how you feel
i would need to know how you feel do it i need to know how you feel when you see craig berube
call a timeout in a 5-2 game that they're winning yeah 5-2 game that they're winning
with 10 minutes to go in the third period how do you feel when you see craig berube's lips
mutter the words that you know that he's saying you can't hear him but he says wake the fuck up
let's go hunting gain the offensive zone and so many other expletives that he could have included
uh and i don't need to include here i don't want to get i don't want to get crazy i don't want to
get crazy but how did you feel when you saw craig berube do that and the team respond so my it was
a hurricane of emotion an unbelievable amount of emotion in three seconds because he calls a time
out with a three goal lead after giving up back-to-back goals or was it back-to-back goals
it was not back-to-back it was like three minutes in or two minutes in and then with nine minutes
uh in not good or no yeah they were up five nothing and then uh yeah dollars loses the
shutout and they're like yeah who cares let's let another one in yeah that's how they were playing
so this is in execution a perfect keith timeout this is an absolutely perfect keith timeout why
because you have the lead
you haven't even
blown it you're just starting to
and he has
to be like hey boys
let's all calm down
we do this and my
reassuring Sheldon Keefe hand motions
and blah blah blah
good cop good cop good cop
so when Berube calls this
time out my blood ran cold a little
bit because I'm like oh shit
it's just the same
thing over
and over and over
and then I saw him
yell and you could tell
there's some heft there's there was
there was diaphragm in there
yeah wake the fuck
up mount barubius
you know he I saw
wake the fuck up and my nipples
got hard that was
my
wife actually turned to me she's like is this turning you on
I'm like it is man I
was so nervous and
not down with it at all and in one fell swoop i was like i think gregory awoken something in me
and that's the coach that's my coach chief daddy that is absolutely he can go by whatever title
he prefers if he keeps doing that so so tell us and you outlined it in the lfr video but tell us
why that is such a it's a culture shift it's they probably already know it but we're now seeing
how things are going to be different okay babcock was bad cop which i've said an alarming amount of
times and it's always difficult to say bad cop babcock was bad cop there you go tongue twister
try it right now alone in your car pause the show um keith was forced to be over the top good cop
and when he had to transition to disciplinarian when he had to lay down the law he like wasn't
able to do it like i don't know if it was the team wouldn't let him or the players were like
yeah yeah we know what you're here to do or i don't know what it was new guy comes in and
Craig Berube is so far what appears to be the perfect leader because he's not bad cop it's not
that simple it's just very very clear instructions he's not there to be a dick he's not there to be
there's nothing emotional about it Babcock would fuck with your head to establish dominance
uh like him dominating you is more important than winning i think yes 100 and we know that
because he's like all right i'll put nick patan in positions to fail um and we will lose this game
ending our streak of uh not blowing i think we know that based on every anecdotal story yeah
ever been told about them no but like there there's at least a few stories where it's like
he kind of fucked them out of winning this one just to be an asshole he was brutal john
tavaris on the second half of a back-to-back starting a fucking how about garrett sparks
and tavaris's return to the islanders get a fucking clue yeah get a heart get a brain anyway
keith comes in and it's hey everything's cool baby everything's and they needed that yeah they did
they did need that and by the way went on like a crazy 20 game streak where they won 15 games
the kind of coach to hold your hand with both hands yes you know what i mean we're gonna get
through this together what do you want for christmas i'm here in this moment where did
you grow up i'm gonna let you be in the starting lineup um even if that's not your line we'll
figure it out after it's that happened a bunch of times yeah and we're gonna it's everything's
cool sweet baby craig berube is like oh i i don't understand what what the fuck is this
this you need me to be nice to you you want to be sorry you want to be in the starting lineup
because you were you're on the third fucking shut up get to the end of the bench yeah go hunt
north south make the simple play
work every shift i looked at your paycheck for a lot of you it's bigger than mine fucking go hunt
it's just clear instructions he's not there to big dog you he's not there to coddle you he's
there to coach a hockey team to win hockey games and he gave them a very very clear instruction
there which was wake the fuck up because they weren't doing the things that he told them to do
and then what happened they scored a goal they didn't allow anymore jesse question uh-huh and
this just as an aside because i want to get back to this to reporter jesse in a second here
but i want to i want to go to reporter jesse and i want to know what's he like in practice
from what you've seen berube yeah he's he's not he's not yelly like i feel like keith was more
in your face i'm gonna yell yeah uh he's very understated and he'll do things like in in the
scrums he'll like tell a little joke like he'll if he's like oh i wanted the guys to everybody
out there wanted to get a goal even i wanted to get that goal you know like i wanted to score
that and you're like haha that's kind of funny you know so i think he definitely coaches in a
completely different way than sheldon keith like they're they're they're i think not polar opposites
but different styles for sure and you see a certain level of buy-in with the guy just because
a new person is there you know it could be the same message delivered a little differently but
because it's a new person saying it you hear more of the buy-in from the guys right yeah and
sometimes when you go from like 23 to 26 or 27 and you've had the same guy like that i thought i
am convinced Keefe was the right choice on a lot of levels at the time I think that Dubas made a
good choice I think the regular season results are them are themselves I think the reason that
they haven't got past the first round is largely due to power play and roster construction and
also let's be honest Dubas never valued goaltending the way he should have you go back and you look at
some of those goaltenders and you go yeah they played well and you're lucky but like you know
when he's going let's line up Matt Murray and Peter Mrazik behind uh Marner Matthews Nylander
that's not someone who takes the position as seriously as they should and i look at um i look
at the team now and these are not boys anymore these are men and it feels like what i saw there
was we're not going to coddle you we're gonna treat you like men yep we'll treat you like adults
and when you're fucking up i'm gonna let you know and what was amazing it wasn't that he did it it
was that they responded that's what i was looking for yeah it was not i i plenty of coaches yeah we
saw glenn galutz and throw his fucking stick into the the the crowd whatever years ago for the
flames they didn't respond ruby doesn't need to he doesn't need to result to all that because he
doesn't need to yell and scream to get his point across but he did there yeah there's yeah there's
some thematics that come with yelling and screaming but most of the time yeah he doesn't need to do
that to give his point but there's no pleading right yes with with keith it was like what the
fuck like he he pleads with the team the way i do yes whereas berube that was a command
here's what he said about it he said it was a feel thing for me i didn't like
what we were doing i just wanted to get a break there and bring everybody in and have a talk a
little bit about getting our intensity level up talk yeah yeah it was a one-sided talk uh they
were pushing hard i thought they pushed hard in the second period too our intensity wasn't good
enough and that has been guys the knock against the leafs um for the last decade they take periods
off talents there but they do take shifts and periods off and it's funny it's snowballs you're
asking about practice one thing from practice that has been apparent like the the times i've
been there is he loves drills in really small spaces and some of the guys there have been like
oh i haven't seen this one before because it's not even like he'll do drills that are like cutting
the ice in half you know and we'll work from even red line in or blue line and he likes cutting the
ice in a little corner so he'll stick two nets um along the sides of the boards and the guys will
run with i don't know 20 guys out there because it's five on five on each side and they're both
running drills in that little tiny space and when you're in those little tiny spaces that's where
like the hard work's being done you know because you gotta really be on your edges in those tight
areas and everybody around there is working for the puck and it's a single puck with just 10 guys
in the corner of the ice so it's board play it's fighting yeah there's a lot of board battles and
he's just trying to get that in them where it's here this is where the game's going to be won
in these tight areas that's where the entire Bruin series was played yeah along the boards
well especially you can see him being like guys this is where we need to be working if you want
to beat the Leafs or at least in the playoffs if you had one put them in the corners and it was it
was you know the Leafs are surprisingly good and this is pre-Berube especially their best guys are
really good with coming out with the puck like I think Marner's quite good at it I think Matthews
is quite good at what we haven't seen though is when it's a dig in push situation we haven't seen
the rest of the lineup like the the finesse guys can get the puck out there's different ways of
doing it marner had like a really cheeky one uh against the kings and like i don't even think he
made body contact with the guy and i i wanted to i wanted to shout him out too no no he did really
well but then you have nice who is a rhinoceros and it's really fun to watch freight train dude
And then last thing with the game itself, you saw it on the, on just from a numbers perspective, it wasn't just like, hey, the Leafs stopped trying. No, literally on the scorecard, you can see them stop trying because in the first period, they were outshot attempted by LA. LA had 22 shot attempts and Toronto had 19. But on the actual shots on the net, Toronto had 12 and LA had nine.
Wow.
So even though they're shot out, shot attempted, and they had more shots on goal, which is awesome. Then the second period.
That's developing into a bit of a theme where the other team gets more attempts, but the Leafs get more.
Which is like, that's what we want.
Execution.
They're taking a lot of shots, but you're stopping them from getting to the net.
Like you're playing great hockey.
They block a lot.
You're blocking a lot.
You're keeping to the outside.
They're weak shot attempts.
You're doing great for your goaltender.
Then in the second period, where the Leafs won that period 2-0, like they only got 11 shot attempts on net.
And LA had 22.
So we had 22.
So back-to-back periods, LA has 22.
this time and in that period they get 14 shots on goal oh yeah la that second period gets 14 shots
on goal toronto only gets seven shots on goal and they only had 11 attempts so there you have
a period you won but you were well outshot attempted and on this and and on the scoreboard
and then the third period it happens once again but in that third period you see them allow two
goals so in the second period if you're brube you saw what the least did in where they were outshot
attempted and shot out shot on gold but you can't complain because you won that period to nothing
how are you going to yell at the guys when you're up to nothing but in the third you allow two goals
and you're being outshot and you're not getting shot attempts and not getting shot on goals
now the dam has broken and you must yell it and that's probably where you get the warning in the
dressing room yes hey i know we're all feeling pretty good about that but i didn't like this
about that yeah and then two goals go in and all of a sudden okay mean craig has to come the leafs
If we're being honest, try to take the rest of the night off.
It's mid-October.
You go up 3-0 in the first period.
Let's try and coast for the rest of this thing, and let's just win it easily.
And they almost did it.
They almost did it in the second period, going up 2-0,
and then everything just got too wonky in the third.
Best teams don't do that.
Florida and Boston are beating the shit out of each other like it's May.
Yeah.
They don't care.
I want to say that the other thing that we saw that was a real positive was –
uh and by the way my wife is quickly becoming steve again she watches every game she's becoming
we're married she's becoming i know she's becoming steve in the sense that that there is a uh a
there is a dread that consistently is there so you see something good and it's like how do i find a
way to feel bad about it and so what nat i'm so they're up thank you catholic for nothing
for nothing in this in this second period and they're midway through the period i'm like god
damn these guys look good but they had a few power plays and they hadn't scored and natalie's
like they haven't got a fucking power play goal this entire season so when you when you texted
me that that she was freaking out about the power play i got a chuckle because i was actually very
chill about it okay yeah that was that was a rare example of uh leaf's twitter um reacting to
something more than i did right and natalie's not on twitter she doesn't have a twitter account
they went over 10 and as soon as i knew they were going for the over 10 or now it's a talking point
trying to avoid it yeah something about double digit but it was a good power play i thought
it well it was it was starting to it feels like it's starting to come together but what i loved
when neil anders scored that first power play goal and you pointed this out on the lfr as well
oh yeah yes is what is craig berube been begging not begging ordering these guys to do he doesn't
beg go to the net he was begging go to the net and who's in front of the net when willie shoots
mitch marner with the screen does not the goalie does not see it i don't know if it was kemper or
not kemper uh i don't know if it was uh copley or or um i think was it i don't remember if copley
was in for the fifth or the fourth yeah i mean i know he was in for the fifth i don't know but
that would have been the fifth like we've been watching the entirety of marner's career and i
think i remember it pretty well i don't remember a ton of those and i mean why would you send him
to go do the screen but why wouldn't you well exactly because he on account he's a player and
the thing is with guys like this and people have this thing that mitch marner is small he's not
the guy's like six foot six foot one he's felt he's felt but he's not even but he can get in
and get out very quickly with a goalie
right when you're taking your shot.
The thing about Mitch is he's so shifty
that you usually want to plant a big, heavy person
in front of the net,
and then your big, heavy defenseman
tries to move the big, heavy other person.
You have a numbers advantage.
Well, you have that too.
You're always, with Nye's in front,
he's a revelation.
So whoever's in front is going to have to give their all
to him, and because you have five and they have four,
that allows Mitch or someone else to run amok.
And just, it's a quick screen.
if you look at how mitch handles it he comes in quick screen boom it's not he's not sitting there
all the entire power play it was just a really smart willie's gonna take a shot here i'm gonna
get in the way and you have killers killers tavaris has lost a step he's still got a great
shot matthews has a hilariously great shot uh on correcting his own mistakes yeah he missed the
first shot and then was like no i'm gonna shoot this is a very funny goal uh william wheelander
can you pull it do you want to pull that up sure sure i was just pulling up i was wondering when
you guys i was gonna show you this is what it looked like when willie was shooting the puck
so right this is where all of the players are on the ice for anybody listening we got 16 and 91
right in front but mitch martyrs coming from 29 is the goalie i was like this isn't a power play
i think that's important to point out that's the goaltender that's where mitch is standing and
uh i can go back here i can show you how it's moving so mitch marner is delivering a quick
little pass to austin matthews he's coming around by the way and boards i love that we can use this
it's nhl.com they have amazing yeah it's uh it's a new feature this season um that game
game changer so we don't need the replay so i sit in the press box and they have this for the game
so i'll sit there and i watch all of the little numbers move around the ice so i know where
everybody is and then i watch like the in front of me is the actual ice then on my laptop in front
of me is the is the simulation of it that's yeah it's really constantly want to hug reporter just
so then so then we also have so anybody this is public information like you out there can go to
nhl.com and look at there it's called goal simulation steve's talking you know what i want
no jesse i want a heat map give me that so anybody out there like it take if you're a huge hockey fan
take advantage of this feature it's really cool you see how plays develop and we can go through
one here where mitch marner is on the power play he has the puck i'll go back again um he has the
puck along the boards below the face-off circle he's coming down and austin's coming behind him
across the boards he passes it up to austin and the beauty thing that mitch marner does is because
the play is going the other way mitch continues around the side of the of behind the net but then
he sneaks out in front you'll watch him here if you watch 16 creep out in front and the pup goes
from he he swoops under gavrikov that's exactly what i was talking about yeah it's beautiful stuff
because savaris is is drawing 84 and 44 right i think it's mikey anderson and gavrikov right i
said nice whoops and and then so you've got so then you've got so all Marner is going to do there
he's going to slip in and out he's not going to stand there well and Gavrikov can't be like oh
I'll just follow Mitch because he's down a man 24's got OEL 12's got Nylander and I mean Austin's
there and look if I gotta take my chances I'm covering off if you look at 12 and 24 too the
way teams have traditionally played the Leafs is they keep them to the outside lane on a on a
on a shorthanded right and so what they haven't adjusted to is Oliver Ekman Larson and his shot
and I think the Leafs know this because you look at how high Matthews is and you look at how high
Willie is if the puck goes to either of those guys they're going to be able to take a couple
of strides before anybody's on them and take a clean shot and so you know I don't think I don't
think people have adjusted to this yet and I'm not saying that the Leafs power play has been bonkers
and amazing but I will say that I think it's very interesting that you've got three guys with great
shots high right those are arguably three of the best shots on the team nick robertson would be
the fourth i would think and mcmahon robertson mcmahon yeah to finish off keep going to finish
off mitch here this is uh this is the drift you're talking about adam so he comes out in front of the
net in front of goalie 29 and he just as the shot's been taken he's right in position uh there's
willie's shooting it the puck's coming and mitch is just drifting by the goaltender and he continues
on his way as the puck goes into the net.
See, he's there for a fraction of a second.
Yeah, it's literally just a breeze-by,
but the breeze-by is perfect because
the goal is scored, and he's screening
the goaltender. Super hot.
That's the power play goal. Now, we would be...
I'm so turned on right now, I can't even tell you.
I can't even... Yeah, we can play how the
goals play now. Can we get
some Bobby McMahon on this, Jesse?
I can't wait to find out we can't use this.
It would be... I think it'll be... Oh, we can.
The point is to be able to use it. I know.
I like this because now we don't have to
freaking stop start our wage here here wait no here wait here let me just no gotta go back here
wait twitter but also remember guys we have audio listeners so remember to always describe the play
and what i felt like let us know if we did a good job and if we need work on it we'll work well now
we'll get better yeah now jesse yes can you bring up one or both of the bobby mcmahon goals sure
because i feel like all of the the craig berube stuff really buried the first one or the second
on whichever one you want um this is a player that was scratched had a bad preseason by his
own admission the coach said so and this is the guy that i was looking at going into this year
and i think jesse and steve would agree that you're like man that's a berube guy it's bobby
mcmahon 100 bobby mcmahon is a berube player i never would have predicted him being a healthy
scratch night one exactly and you look at it and you go wait hold on nick robertson is getting all
the praise not that i have an issue with nick robertson i love nick robertson but i was like
shit where's bobby mcmahon and all this this is the guy i thought that would surprise the coach
it's it's like people didn't watch the blues after 2019 like that that was a big kind of
plotting slow team but if you watch the blues in the years that followed like no berube is a
he likes a faster team um you know or a faster style i should say not necessarily faster players
um he likes them to play heavy so yeah that's bobby but like there's a lot of speed and skill
there oh yeah they were consistently a very very good regular season team and i look at so i look
at the the bobbing man goals by the way three goals in three games he had one against the devils
two uh two against the kings 81 goal pace that is how you stay in the lineup yep that is how you
don't become a part of the rotation that is clearly going to happen with connor deward back
skating patch ready on the outside looking in because there is a rotation going on none of them
are going to be happy about it don't expect any of these guys to be thrilled about it but if you
want to keep playing what do you got to do well you got to score and as long as we're we're doing
the the keef berube comparison on and off um keef never really got the option to do a rotation there
It wasn't Berube isn't beholden to anybody on this team.
He's the new guy.
I just got here.
He's the I just got here guy this year.
Last year was Brad is like, oh, you don't like my free agency signings.
I just got here.
This year is Berube.
So if he doesn't want to play you, he's like, I just got here.
I don't know you.
I just got here.
It's great.
And I have the flexibility because I have multiple forwards or I will soon.
Like Yarncroak's not even a part of this.
Yes.
You said Dewar.
Yeah.
We forgot about Yarncrow.
And same with defensemen.
Like, to have options at both.
Like, there were times where they were carrying one spare.
Yep.
To have options at both, I don't know if Keefe had that for long.
They tied Keefe's hands behind his back because it was all tied to the salary cap.
And he couldn't do anything because he had to play certain guys because they only had certain guys.
And one thing I will say that Mike Babcock absolutely nailed.
He's like, we need more depth.
and this is the and then i'm gonna have spare guys and never use yes because i think he had
a philosophical difference with dude i'm gonna lock josh levo in the garage yeah like yeah free
frank corrado literally yeah but i i look at this and i go okay so you this is the first time and
we mentioned this in september this is the first time i can remember in years where there's been
actual battles for spots yes and we're seeing it play out in the regular season when when cali
comes back the least will have five full nhl lines yeah and we said we said that a lot over
the years and we're wrong every time and this time it'll actually be true when yanni hockenpah
eventually plays they're gonna have 42 defensemen like well they have exactly 40 on both the forward
group and the defense corps like they have too many guys which is a good thing and none of them
will be martin marincin which i think is you know they should sign him just for the lulz um i want
to uh just do the mcmahon let's do mcmahon so you see so let me let me start here steve um and
jesse bring it up so you start here when you look at the lines you go oh hey tavaris not the center
of the second line we've got mcmahon domi nylander i like it i like it a lot why do you like it
before the game even starts why do you like it uh don't we play in center so domi cannot
play with certain players we know this because it goes really poorly that dude for some reason
really really struggles without the puck he struggles on the defensive end um i really like
the responsibility of mcmahon and kneelander lean the kneelander is better defensively than people
give him credit for not necessarily in his own end but there's a little bit of something for
everyone here um so i like that uh it adds speed to this line and it gives domey two crazy shooters
um you assume uh the puck is going to knee lander and he's going to try to shoot his elite shot
but what a lot of nhl teams aren't adjusting to is they're just as confident in bobby bobby can
freaking rip it yep yeah so let's let's play this forward if we can sure um so one thing that's fun
about the goal simulation feature is when you enter it they have the guy who's gonna score the
goal a little extra circle around him so if you want to follow that player in particular you
already know who it's going to be and you can see the play develops the Leafs have too many men oh
it's the goalie he's like who's 41 I don't know I don't get it so okay I don't play it
Nylander on the right well I'm describing it Nylander on the right McMahon right next to him
Domi on the left OEL has the puck in the Leafs down to Stoller's his glove side nice nice
okay so oel up the boards nylander retrieves around my if we were watching the real replay
of this the little chip play that nylander has right there beautiful yeah it was the the uh the
leafs took uh the burrows gavrikov pairing soul in this game like i the the story is oh yeah they've
allowed a lot of goals oh the goaltending no they killed this pair in this game yeah there's no
reason that willie should come away with this puck other than he's faster and better than you
so shout out willie yeah well the kings are thinking okay gavrikov's gonna get this he
can move it over to bros willie's fucked and and well he is yeah and like if you think man
if no and if mcmahon overskates this we're gonna have a real good shot you're gonna put it on net
and get a rebound you're gonna go here you know right oh wait i called him mikey anderson that's
gavrikov's number yeah okay willie said alas not so do you want to keep going with the uh okay
Willie, skating to the blue line.
Puck comes up the boards.
Nylander chips it around Gavrikov.
Burrows on him.
McMahon blows by Gavrikov like he's standing friggin' still.
McMahon gets the puck in the slot.
Move, score!
If you could rewind it back.
Bobby McMahon!
Right before Bobby McMahon.
Second of the game!
I'm not done.
I love this new feature.
Now, if we were to go to the actual goal replay itself,
what I love about what Bobby McMahon did,
Not only did he blow by, but first off, in a very unleafed fashion, he actually shot, which is amazing.
When you consider that Max Domi has two total shots this year.
Does he really?
He has two shots this year.
Max!
And he's on pace for 103 points.
That's right.
That's exactly what you thought.
He has five assists.
Yes.
I know.
It's stupid.
So McMahon goes, and look at even what happens with Big Sava David's icon there, number 31 on the LA Kings.
so when when mcmahon number 74 blows by nobody can catch him they're not even bending their knees
too many men on the ice oh yeah i mean you can see the line changes happening uh morgan riley's
going off so so watch watch what bobby mcmahon does he goes too he goes really far to the right
hand side or at least big save dave's left and big save dave comes a little too far out
over commits and mcmahon has a just like it was beautiful he gets the goal he was patient with it
he didn't shoot it at the chest he just held held over committed scores beautiful he really doesn't
need much eh mcmahon mcmahon no he doesn't need much no he's got a great shot he's got wheels i
think that are underrated um and you know the leafs really did miss him in the playoffs last
he didn't play a game no and i mean that feels like every year especially against the bruins
it's like if we just had one guy oh man he tied the room together like there was uh there was a
real before bobby mcmahon and after season yeah no like seriously like he he really he was uh
BFBM
before Bobby McMahon
that's how we keep time now
my mom used to when I used to have to go
to the bathroom like a number two my mom would be like
when I was a kid I called it a BM
oh dude
I'd be like mom I got a BM
and I was like four
that really bummed me out man
I think that's a very sanitized
way to say I have to go poop
that BMO that bummed me out
BFBM
No, but they didn't have the offensive depth at all.
And then this guy comes in and he scores a hat trick.
And we're like, ah, that's funny.
And then he kind of kept scoring.
And we're like, oh, wait, no.
And that's after he got off waivers, too.
Yeah, dude.
And they've had these guys over the years where, oh, man, he's got frigging wheels.
If only he could bury one.
Mikheyev, and he had the one season where he actually did.
And Engvall, and he had the one season where he actually did.
But it looks like this guy is going to be able to do it consistently.
Yeah.
At the ripe old age of 28.
I also like that McMahon and Zomi,
they're not like guys that are going to get in there
and punch people's lights up,
but they're not afraid of it.
Like if there is a pileup of bodies in front of a net,
they're not going to be afraid to grab guys,
pull guys away, whatever.
And that's Berube's team.
Like it's not necessarily enforcers,
but it's guys who will go.
Yeah.
Like just we've had too many guys.
it's like you're not even going to think about it really even like clark macarthur remember
clark macarthur back in the day he wouldn't fight that often but whenever he did he would
and he would kick your ass and it would be out of anger like he was a violent fighter like for
you're like yaroslav spot check all right you do you clark he broke his face sent a set of a lesson
I'm pretty sure he broke his face.
Now, going into today, we've got a game tomorrow,
which, again, Steve will be streaming on the SDP channel.
Rangers.
So Jesse will be cheering against the Leafs tomorrow.
Reporter Jesse.
From the press box.
From the press box.
In a Rangers jersey.
Go Rangers.
Go Blue Shirts.
Go Breadman.
Panarin, I think, had a hat trick last night.
Was that a hat trick?
Was it last night?
Anyway, he's been good.
He's leading the league in points.
Nice.
I will say that we will be encouraged by a couple of things.
the first thing is that joseph wool is participating right now as of this recording
in practice it's his first full practice since going on ir so yay yay um jesse was not there
for that practice piece of garbage i have here right now you have to ask you have to ask yourself
in two places is jesse getting complacent is he lazy yes people are asking the question wake the
fuck up uh i wish i could be in two places at once but we haven't developed that technology
You saw him practicing yesterday.
I did, yeah.
Yesterday was an optional skate, so everybody wasn't there.
Joseph Wall was one of the people who participated in the optional skate.
He looked decent.
Who else was there?
Austin?
Willie?
That guy who we haven't seen yet.
Fraser Minton?
Yeah!
Or Yanni Hockenpah?
Okay.
Yeah, tell us about both, please.
Yes.
Let's start with Hockenpah, because that's been brewing a little longer.
because every practice i've been at and it's not talked a lot because it's not really news but
yanni hockenpah has been participating in every team practice they they run the drills with i had
no idea of that i didn't know until i was there but they'll run the drills with uh they'll have
one of the defensemen whether it's myers whether it's benoit whoever's going to be served whether
it's lilligran run the drill an extra time with yanni hockenpah so he gets to participate in
everything so he's there just doing all the stuff he's a little you can tell he's a little slower
than everybody else but he's out there skating every single time the leafs are skating so he's
right i would say he's closer than we all think like this won't be a january thing i don't think
just by my guess of seeing him out there every single day is he in a red jersey like is he no
contact no no he's out in the regular ass jersey that they all the defensemen wear they should put
a red jersey around his knees just so nobody grasps but uh red sock there's yeah they they
The Leafs, to be honest, don't make a lot of contact in practice.
They're not the Buffalo Sabres.
They're also not like one and four or whatever the Sabres are.
But he's out there in a regular jersey practicing with the team
as a regular participant.
Jesse said this to us after the last show,
and we were like, let me stop you there.
What?
No one's talking about it.
We didn't know.
Yeah, we didn't know.
And also, they switch pads.
They switch.
Yeah, this is like a little, hey,
If you don't know how this works, this is how it works.
When the Leafs go to practice, they have two ice pads at the Ford Performance Facility.
They start on one.
Anybody who wants to come out early and do extra work with all of the coaches, like I saw Haley Wickenheiser out there with Max Pacioretty the other day, and they were doing some extra skating drills.
Whoever wants to come out early, you start on pad one.
And then when the entire team is ready around like 11 o'clock, they all go over to pad two, and they start practice there.
they practice there for i don't like half an hour on pad two and then around like 30 minutes after
that time they go back to pad one why everybody started because they chopped up pad two so pad
two so much and they want to keep practicing so they they have two pads so that they don't have
to wait 20 minutes for a zamboni to come out and zamboni it to continue practice they just have two
ice pads that's cool available to them so that they can just keep practice flowing the entire
time and that halfway through the ice isn't all chopped up they go to the back to the fresh pad
and they continue practice facility so good yeah i know performance is great i saw um the toronto
scepters uh doing their uh training camp uh i don't know i'm not sure if training camp officially
started but they were having their practice out there uh that was yesterday so i watched them for
a little bit after i was at least practice yeah so it was fun yeah it might not have been official
because i'm always amazed whenever i'm there for something you'll look on a pad of ice and you're
like oh that guy's on the lightning or like like people will just rent the ice yeah from them so
it's just constantly full of professional yeah so they all had the pwhl jerseys and not toronto
scepter jersey so that's why i'm like i'm unsure if it was the toronto scepters training it might
have just been a collection of the toronto players who were there uh just practicing on the ice pad
which was which was cool to see they're fucking they're ripping it like they're running through
some some shootout drills and they were just they're firing the fuck i love it yeah it was
good to see it was good to see at this point where they're still two months out of the season they're
going hard and they're extending their season so they're going to be 90 games this year total which
is a lot more than last year it's awesome yeah yeah maddie said that so many games 90 games total
total yeah not her team yeah we're gonna play each team 25 times yeah no uh okay so leafs lines
of practice according to mark masters who's actually there not like lazy reporter jesse
nice matthews marner mcmahon domi nylander interestingly on the fords it's basically
the same holmberg tavaris robertson lawrence or lawrence uh comp reeves and then doer who
is also skating and patch ready as the reserves and i want to say this i like holmberg a lot
but he is where offense kind of goes to die sometimes and i know he needs to be dressed
but what i'm finding interesting is how are they going to squeeze him in uh because he should be
playing yeah and and i look but i look at like a tavaris patcher ready robertson lineup and i go
oh that's so exciting learn how to take face-offs because it's keeping them in the lineup yeah like
we'd be we'd be holmberg may still come out i think there's going to be a rotation right but
that's what jesse's been saying if we're looking at all right who's coming out today it's a lot
harder to take him out isn't it it sure is it sure is and with Tavares down on the 3c too
uh yeah he's I think he's a good player with good instincts good work ethic he's got to work on two
things one keep your fucking both your hands on your stick and stop turning your back on the
penalty kill Jesse he did it again last game I want to know the thing that you know about
Fraser Minton Fraser Minton uh at optional skate yesterday skated before the guys were on the ice
So sometimes the Marlies will practice before the Leafs.
I was talking to Nick Barton about that.
Like sometimes they'll just team up practices and utilize the coaches and all that.
So this was a little different with Fraser Minton just out there with, I think it was three different coaches who were running him through drills.
And he was injured in training camp and we haven't seen him yet.
So the discussion now is after practice, that was obviously the first question we asked Berube.
We're like, OK, so Fraser Minton, we all saw him on the ice.
How close is he?
And he said, close.
That's all I can tell you.
That's his exact quote.
was close that's all i can say is he gonna play games he's gonna play games so i kind of think
he might the interesting thing here is now i know that's why i want to get your guys's opinion on
this because i don't know either way do you think they start them with the marlies because they have
that option or they say do yeah they can they can start them with the marlies or they'll play
conditioning yeah it's like it's sort of like what they did with shane right right so they they have
that in the i guess is the cba the way the rules work to play them with the marlies and then do
whatever they want with him after that or does he just make the Leafs you just outline the lineup
and it's pretty crowded oh it's huge who do you especially when Yardcrow comes back who do you
shuffle out for Fraser Minton well the cap unfortunately has to be considered so I don't
I don't know what the cap implications of uh bringing him in uh would have I wouldn't mind
seeing it we just talked about how like it's kind of difficult to take Pontus Holmberg out of this
lineup that's one way you could do it theoretically and having minton and tavaris who are quite close
playing together would be interesting and we and trading off face off stuff like that and if we
remember how last year when this guy earned a spot in the starting lineup last year because
how good he was and then they're like okay this isn't going that great let's send him back down
but out of he looked great out of training camp yep if i'm fraser minton i'm like no no marley's
is fine because then you get to make your uh professional salary and not go to the oh a little
bit and then whl whl excuse me well i i still think that's how this ultimately goes he's gonna
go to the whl for sure but wouldn't you want canada how long can his conditioning stint be
is it two weeks i gotta i gotta look up the actual amount he can play down it's not long
but even if it is two weeks and then he spends four weeks with the leafs there's six weeks of
professional experience and money and money and working with their staff yeah absolutely now i
want to talk quickly about the defense while jesse's looking that up because that's the other
part we didn't get to and there is a change riley tanev egman larson mccabe benoit those are your
top five basically every game it's gonna be difficult to take benoit out of the lineup there
yes there will be times where they rest guys and that sort of thing but ultimately yeah that's
going to be what it is Lilligren was in and I think it's a little unfair and I was unfair about
this in the group chat I didn't think he did anything except for give the puck away a few
times to look a bit soft but he was take a penalty but it's also not fair because they've played four
games and he hasn't been any of them right until this one and they played three before this this
is the fourth uh he is out as of right now Connor Timmons back in now I don't think that that's the
end of the world uh i think that the leafs are better off if this guy succeeds whether they're
going to trade him or not oh like it's it listen i don't i am not rooting for the downfall of
timothy lilligren i think lilligren living up to what we think lilligren could be is easily the
best case right scenario and imagine the leafs keep them yeah easily but outstanding in absence
of that yeah i guess you look at trading them so um connor timmons looks to be back in stallers
Tildeby and Wall were in net, obviously.
Wall's got probably another week here
before we even talk about him being in games
unless he's some sort of surprise starter tomorrow night.
Well, and their schedule's so light.
Yeah, so what's the rush?
I love, though, that the conversation has shifted
to is Anthony Stallers the new starter of this team
and is that some sort of surprise tonight?
Team Canada.
Yeah, well, yeah.
Sorry.
I think it's interesting that that is already a talking point
because it should have been a talking point
before the season even started, and it was here,
which is this guy was, I think, goal saved above expectation also,
which is the advanced goalie stat beyond save percentage,
which we keep quoting.
He was the best one.
It's under two.
He's stolen a few.
Under two last season, and it's under two this year,
and he has on 84 shots stopped 79.
There's nothing even in his game that, like, okay,
it's one thing if the puck hits you and that's good
and you're on a hot streak or whatever.
There's nothing in his game that I see,
I mean my non-goalie untrained eye, that even bugs me.
No, it's just calm.
You said it in the LFR.
It's like...
Like, even Hildeby in his game, and he won and he was good,
there were a few moments where I'm like,
you're moving a bit too much there, bud.
Like, it just made me a little nervous.
It was like Jack Campbell did that when he wasn't solid.
Frederick Anderson did that when he wasn't solid.
Peter Mrazek did that all of the time.
The best goalies in this league know how to stay in their freaking crease.
And like it's such an exact science of powerful movements and stopping dead.
And I mean, Stollers is freaking huge and moves unreal for a guy that big.
i'm sorry why why shouldn't i be madly in love with him yeah and be excited now does it mean
he's the starter long term i don't know i think he has to earn that but i feel and i also loved
i've loved joseph wool since he started here he's an extraordinarily good goal when he's playing
he's great so when he gets back that's going to be great and how about this how about it doesn't
matter because the goaltending situation is not a problem i love that part i love that yeah it's it
used to be you had no shot beyond number one and now you have three depending on who you ask for
really good options jesse what are you looking at i was just looking at some of the fraser
mitten stuff oh okay any did you find anything um conditioning still no more interesting than
the show i guess no no i was just wanted to uh i wanted to know if you found something i don't
have the official timeline um well so here's what i want to do uh i want to say that uh this is
exciting i love the way they've started i don't think you'll find a leaf fan old or young that
is upset with the way they're playing the old guys the old guard they like they like the the
rock'em sock'em robot part of this team and it's there uh the young people like us uh like that
but we also like the fact that they can score goals it's in bunches i'm just trying not to
sound stupid and that's all i'm my wife because i go you know what do you think i go they look
really good and she's like you say that every year i'm like i know no but they do though i but they
do in a different way man it's different they stop no every year they look like a slightly
different version of themselves and this year they do not look the same yep i think that's fair
tan of oel is a crazy change oh my god on the back end is a crazy change back there
i don't give a damn how long the contracts are um the forward group is slowly figuring out oh okay
here's how we do this um it looks different i have the answer for you what's the answer uh
fraser minton is eligible to play a full season in the ahl what he does not need to be sent back
to the uh whl because he has played at least four seasons in the chl and is 20 oh yeah he's 20 years
old oh wow yeah so this season would be his mark the first marley's year oh that's cool yeah there
you go um so wait he's not even eligible for junior anymore no he's 20 oh yeah there's no
reason i thought he had another year no no he's 20 this this year he'll be playing for the marley's
i had i'm not gonna lie i thought he was going back no no so yeah so uh when he comes back the
decision is does he go down to the ahl or play with the nhl yeah interesting go to the ahl yeah
in that case yeah just go to the age i think you i think there's room for him at center too like
it's like blandese and herevin and um there's a lot of guys who rotate they've got holmberg listed
but lol um steve's place some center crookshank ebers easy um yeah i think quinlan or quillen
uh i think i think you're gonna see frazier he'll play sign yeah the cutoff date for when you got to
be uh 20 years old is september 15th and fraser mitten was born on july 5th and he's 20 right now
so he's eligible for the ahl that is so hot there you go i'm so turned on again uh so good for him
anyway that's uh we're gonna talk about leafs again because frankie's coming on but we're gonna
talk more nhl when west chaffer's took flight in 1996 the vibes were a bit different people

to next is jake ottinger signed the same contract that jeremy swayman did the same aav as swayman
and allmark and deservedly so but i love this and this tweet has since been deleted but the internet
is forever oh oh bruce levine who is the uh dallas stars radio analyst uh tweeted this adam levine's
brother yes it's true he said i'm gonna pay phone trying to call home uh no he didn't i'm gonna he
said in my stomach jake ottinger told me that he called jeremy swayman to congratulate him after
his deal with boston was announced otter said he was glad about how the stars conduct business
and that he'd never have to go through that type of ordeal and then bruce added so true dot dot dot
now that's the tea and i he hasn't issued a retraction on that but he did delete the tweet
because it kind of exploded and you can see why um and i i want to say that i don't think
anybody's questioning whether ottinger is worth it he's worth it but i look at this and i go man
he's right dallas handled this so much better they just got it done behind the scenes no what
they should have done is needlessly trade ottinger's backup um yeah like months ahead of
and and then make it play out in the in the press and trade his backup make sure you lose all your
leverage by trading your very good backup and make sure it's for an underwhelming package to
a divisional rival always good always good and smart to do it's not listen bruins fans it's not
very often, I get to look
at what the Bruins are doing and go,
what the hell is that? That's definitely
one of them. No, the Stars
are generally
a really smart team who do
really smart things.
They haven't lost this year.
And look at their cap hits.
They got a bunch of extremely good
players on that team. And there's
no cap hit on that team where you're like,
oh, that's pretty stupid.
Yeah.
There's a...
Dallas did lose one game a whole lot is not lost Sagan and Ben are a little rich are you forgetting
what happened on July 1st this year oh yeah no they're right side the stars signed Dumba and
Labushkin for the right side of their defense no it's weird hey listen for the Leafs I would
have taken that last year that would have legitimately been their best right side and
a quarter century yeah but yeah as you're the stars and we expect more of you um like listen
they're not an infallible team yeah but they're four and one a little rich but no generally like
robertson at his cap hit hints at his cap hit stankoven and uh yeah the deals they have are
incredible yeah robertson at seven seven five is a steal yeah and hints at 8.45 is a steal like
it's really good stuff and you know what i don't think he's gonna sustain this but starting a
season at a 948 save percentage he has no way that's his day but this is a guy whose worst
season save percentage wise was last year it was still a 905 which was about league average
because the save percentages have been coming down as the goal scoring has been going he's
an extremely good goalie now uh so i just thought i would i would add that to you and apologies
bruce i know that you deleted that tweet but again the internet lasts forever and i really did need
i that's why i screen grabbed the tweet because i'm like this tweet is not going to stay up
uh i think the most interesting part about the ottinger deal is what does this mean for
igor shusterkin because igor shusterkin is asking for a whole bunch of money if if the rumors are
there to be believed it's that he believes he's the most important piece of the new york rangers
so that he wants a little over what Panarin is making.
And Panarin right now is the top dog who's making 11.5.
So Shosturkin wants like 11.6.
But we're seeing the top goaltender market come in at the exact same number for everybody, 8.25.
And I don't know if Shosturkin, that's the question everybody's been asking,
is Shosturkin $3 million better than Ottinger, Allmark, or Swayman?
So here's my argument if I'm him.
because i'm wondering the same thing i'm like okay he's better he is better is he that much
better right um okay so the guys who all signed identical cap hits are dude who's never been a
true starter for a sustained period of time that's women former vesna winner who lost his job last
year uh and is older and also a ufa at the end of the thing exactly ufa and 905 goalie last year
i had a 913 i currently have a 921 i am currently igor shisterkin uh no my number does not change
and i i look at that and i go okay so you can i agree with you you could probably one way or the
other make the argument yes he is or no he isn't right there are probably ways that you could say
well value why blah blah blah what i'm going for if i'm igor shisterkin is what's my value to the
new york rangers uh there's definitely that because what because not only am i the best
goalie in the league most of the time but i'm also the only option you have and so you can gear
teams for that and you know what you should go make his money he's earned it okay he was a 932
and 12 games he was a 9 16 and 35 games he was a 9 35 and 53 games he was a 9 16 and 58 games
he was a 9 13 and 55 games and right now he's a 9 21 and 3 games dude this is a wildly consistent
goalie yeah i think you pay him oh my god year in year out i should say he goes on streaks and
stuff but yeah holy shit i want to talk about gentlemen uh first off uh name the three undefeated
teams in the league and by the way i was wrong dallas is not undefeated name the three of them
is it still the flames three sorry three undefeated teams that means that otl by the way
otl does not count undefeated in regulation no i mean otl like it's a loss okay so i'm talking
about so yes the flames are one of them who haven't three teams with no loss of any kind
right including overtime including all right that's what i'm trying to say here got it
Flames.
Yes.
Got it.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hmm.
I don't actually...
Hmm.
The answers will surprise you.
Do you have any guesses, Jess?
I know Nashville's awful.
Colorado's awful.
Nashville doesn't have a win.
Colorado doesn't have a win.
Edmonton's awful.
Edmonton is...
They got a win.
They got a win.
Connor was the fifth Connor to score in an Edmonton game this year.
They're getting better.
Nice, nice.
Florida.
No.
Nah.
Boston.
no they've lost to florida florida yeah utah nope i know florida is at the top of the atlantic so
that rules out florida um new jersey or not new york uh the rangers no they have not lost in
regulation oh um so that leaves only one of the teams is an atlantic division team oh and one of
them central that doesn't oh tampa because they've played like one game yeah three games oh they
We've played one less than the Rangers, one less than the Flames.
I know Florida's in first, though.
I'm not wrong about that, right?
No, you're not wrong.
Okay.
Because they've played five.
Right.
Winnipeg Jets.
Three games.
3-0.
3-0.
3-0.
So, listen, I know it's way too early, but I want to bring that up.
I think that's important.
They've played three games in, like, 11 days.
Yeah.
The schedule's been weird to start.
It's like, we're going to start early, but we're really not going to.
Tampa had a game canceled as well.
That'll do it.
Yeah, the game again.
Carolina. That was supposed to be in Tampa,
so they should have played four games. That'll do it.
I don't want to spend too much time on this, but I do
think we have to have our eyes on
the Flames as a wagon because
they have already decided internally that they
are. Are you saying they're a fire wagon?
Exactly. Frank
Saravalli on Amazon's
around the NHL show
last night with Andrew Petrillo where they, you know, it's like
the NFL red zone, but the NHL version of it.
Saravalli said that the Flames
are already looking for a right shot second
line center, and that's without Sharon
govich back and we said right shot right shot they preferably a right shot centerman second
liner that might change the thing i was about to bring up well what were you gonna bring up just
bring it up anyway uh i think they prefer it it doesn't have to be shoots left uh you know who's
a healthy scratch for the flyers right now is noah cates he shoots left um he had a really good
sort of introduction to the nhl in a 16 game cup of coffee five goals four assists nine points
uh full rookie season 13 goals 38 points in 82 games last year wasn't nearly as good six goals
18 points in 59 games and this year he's only played one game uh it doesn't seem to be a long
term fit in philly but that's a guy i would covet i think it's interesting the flames's numbers
didn't look too bad last season when you compare them to some of the other teams like their
underlying numbers were decent um so this might be real but also the flames last year had three
separate winning streaks of four games or more and where do they finish really yeah so we're
literally four games into their season let's pump the brakes here they had they had three separate
winning streaks of four games or more last year i'm gonna i'm gonna out cj but i'm not gonna say
what cj in the group chat said if the nh if the flames get anywhere near a playoff spot he will
blank i'm gonna leave the blank you can ask cj and julian he's gonna be on the hook for it
i think he is i will post the dm yeah i will uh now i want to talk about teams that there are
there are things i want to get to with frankie that i'm saving but we want to talk about some
teams that are not that great okay um the sabers have said and this is kevin adams words they are
built to win now kevin shut up when did he say that he said that before the season oh oh and
And the Sabres currently sit in 27th.
It's only six games in, but one, four, and one,
which is exactly where they were last year at this time.
That's also bad.
Yes.
If you're keeping track, bad.
And Matthew Fairburn, who's a reporter for The Athletic for the Sabres,
said almost the entire roster is made up of players
Adams either drafted, acquired, or signed to a contract extension.
Cousins, Thompson, Dolling, Power, Samuelson,
have all been given long-term contracts and outside of thompson none of them is playing up
to their cap hit and so that is a gm i'm keeping my eyes on because i told you last episode i don't
know if you guys have seen it yet the jack eichel episode or the amazon thing and they have the
kevin adams press conference and i'm like man i saw it last night yeah he does not and they don't
really present it in any other way other than the way it happened doesn't look good it just is not
it has not aged well i mean the story is it's bad broadly you know like there's a lot of very
intricate details to the story but broadly he needed a surgery they wouldn't let him get the
surgery he wanted he demanded a trade they stripped him of the captaincy they trade him
he gets the surgery he wins a cup and is still playing great and is still playing great uh
number one center broadly it makes the sabers look terrible yes now another team i'd like to
move on to i want to go quick on some of these because um detroit and and the colorado i'm going
to save for frankie because they're kind of free spaces sure sorry not detroit and colorado
colorado nashville i want to save for frankie but there are three teams that have played four games
and have not scored 10 goals detroit is the free space what are the other two justin hall had a
really sick assist too uh have not scored 10 goals any guesses guys i don't think colorado's
in there i'll give you a guess i'll give you a little hint one of them is expected to be bad
one of them is expected to be one of the best teams if not the best team in their division
schville schville i'm surprised it's schville oh yeah because stamp coast doesn't have a point
and who else can't score but they're expected to have a point i don't think so he doesn't have a
goal marsh is so got his first goal last night yep uh and they're expected to be bad sharks the
sharks ah yeah so detroit now wow no points minus three stamkos i think that's to me that's a team
that's like adjusting to new people and they'll figure it out unless the second book another
youtube trip whatever it is you need to do they'll figure it out well you gotta post the trip and
then cancel it that's right you can't go on the trip have you so wait you have seen oh man i just
got absolutely destroyed by that dude they put so much emphasis on youtube i will still stand behind
what i said which is it shouldn't take that but it did you're like this had nothing to do with it
in the documentary it had everything to do with it they should have used i will own that take
they should have used that in the show oh they should have for sure oh what does it matter it
matters like to our lifeblood they almost didn't lose for the rest of the season like the episode
Until they made the playoffs.
Fuck Adam.
Adam, you big stupid idiot.
The SS, fuck Adam.
But going in, in our season previews,
Detroit had seven goalies under NHL contract.
They lost Reimer.
Huso went on waivers.
It's still part of the quote-unquote
goaltender rotation that Derek Lalonde is running.
Jack Campbell is in the program.
If they started seven goalies at once,
could this crisis in goal be averted?
It's possible.
The goaltending and the defense,
insanely bad for Detroit.
insanely bad can't move guys except for more insider who can do anything
like it's a pretty thin group talbot lion should be fine like as a two dudes tandem
it's i don't i don't understand what they're doing uh and the next thing like oh jess did
you know and alex lion has been like decent he's got a 929 that's okay they're they're such a um
Not a lot played, but it's been okay.
What do we always say the worst teams in the NHL are?
What are you?
Yeah, what are you?
What's your identity?
I don't know what the Red Wings are.
And I haven't for several years.
Like, they're a collection of decent players.
Like, I don't look at them and go,
oh, that's garbage, or that's garbage,
or like any more than most teams in the league.
They're just sort of there.
And they need an identity.
I think the teams you just ran through,
plus if you throw in the LA Kings,
I think you have three situations where if these teams don't make the playoffs, there's a really good case that neither of these general managers should keep their jobs.
If Buffalo misses, Kevin Adams should probably be gone.
If Detroit misses, Eisenman, you've had a long time.
How do you handle that, though?
He's a legend in Detroit.
If we're just talking about performance, like it's been go time for a while now and you've been in Little Caesars and you've never hosted a playoff game ever.
Is he president and GM?
Like, could you kick him upstairs?
I think you have to.
Oh, that's interesting.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, like, give him the big boy role.
Colorado, who's had way more success.
Sackick was promoted or kicked upstairs or however you want to look at it.
I'm going to go with promoted on account of he won a cup.
But he's the president now, no longer the GM.
It's Chris McFarlane.
Right.
And I think that's more become the norm.
I feel like the president role is closer to the GM role of 15 years ago.
These days, it seems like the president makes a lot of those higher level decisions.
and the gm kind of runs the day-to-day so if he gets that promotion like i feel like it'd be
still he's still running the show so i don't know i don't know how that's going to play out but and
then the third one is the la kings where rob blake like if this thing goes to is a disaster like he
definitely that man i don't underestimate the mark bergman effect on that front office man
they started making montreal he's gonna replace him are you kidding no they started making
montreal ass moves when he showed up there pierre-luc-dubois joel edmondson's contract
What are you fucking talking about?
It's a pretty rich contract.
I think if all three of those teams miss the playoffs,
all three of those GMs might likely be fired.
You know what, Jesse?
I wonder how many of them make it to Christmas if this continues, right?
If it trends towards missing.
It does go that way very quickly.
Listen, former players, I think, get a little bit more rope.
Yeah, they do, especially when they played for the team.
I think we're reaching the end of it.
The more rope has been a significant amount of time here,
especially in LA.
Blake is one thing.
Oh, I don't know.
How do you do Stevie?
How much longer do you continue with the losing in Detroit?
Who even does it?
Who fires Steve Eisenman?
The guy who owns the team.
The Illich family?
The Illich family, yeah.
The team.
Like, I don't even want to cross that bridge.
I think you're closer to the correct answer where it's like you just move them out of that position.
You give them something even more or something adjacent.
But I don't know.
I feel like they did that to Dale Tallon years ago.
Like, yeah, you don't necessarily got to fire him,
but he can't do the job anymore.
No, I'm very unsatisfied with how this little run here in Detroit has been.
I've expected them to take another step here for like three years,
and there's no next step.
And I have purgatory.
I don't understand what to do.
This is the worst place you can be as an NHL franchise,
where you're not bad enough to tank,
but you're not good enough to make the playoffs.
It's disaster.
And if everybody gets healthy and they start winning,
this can all go away.
Yeah, that is perfectly fine.
Like, none of this is a conversation if you win games.
But if, as Steve said, you know,
the Leafs power play went 0 for 10.
We're way too early.
So we're going to get, like, when Frankie's on,
we're going to do way too early reactions.
But we start to get around game 10,
and it's looking a little like this.
You got two, three wins.
Yeah, but, okay, Adam, there's 32 teams in this league.
And you said if they get healthy,
that there's 25 teams in this league who could conceivably make the playoffs yeah if everything
goes their way yeah like there's only a few where you're like that's a lot everything went right
you'd still suck yeah like there's just every team has a shot and like this hope and a prayer
strategy isn't doing it the 15 16 season eight seasons last time the Detroit Red Wings made the
playoffs mike baghock was still the coach and was lidstrom still playing oh no no 15 16 yeah no i
don't oh okay never mind i'm wrong yeah the other guy blasho uh pittsburgh is the last team i want
to talk about before we get to frankie and the headline this morning from josh yohi yes he does
work there steve uh is penguins need to move on from tristan jari who could have seen this coming
I was Yogi, the reporter who I think he said another unprofessional performance from Tristan Jari.
Well, let me run you through the article today.
Okay.
First paragraph, the Tristan Jari era in Pittsburgh theoretically has at least four seasons remaining because that's what his contract says.
Good Lord.
That contract, however, was a bad idea.
It would also be a bad idea for Jari to stand between the Penguins pipes anytime soon.
And then he goes in and he drops some facts.
Are you ready for these facts?
Gravy.
Jari's save percentage this season is 8-3-3.
Jari's GAA this season is 5.47.
He has allowed 12 goals in fewer than seven periods.
He has allowed the opposition to score on the first shot of the game
in two of his three appearances this year.
He's not even the worst goalie in the NHL.
He's been yanked in three of his past six starts at home, PBG Paints.
He has been pulled in four of the last 17 outings.
in his past 17 outings his save percentage is 867 his save percentage is under 900 in each of his
past eight appearances his goals against averages and save percentages since 2021 2022 are as
follows and he goes through them all uh not good they they look okay but they're not great and then
he goes he lost his job to alexandr dalgovich uh last season and then the penguins went on a tear
which we talked about a lot the penguins are six nine and two in his last 17 appearances the
penguins have never won a playoff series with jari as their goaltender and have failed to qualify for
the playoffs in the past two seasons jari was statistically outplayed by casey de smith alex
nidalcovich and now joel bloomquist admittedly small sample size in recent seasons now you talk
about the professionalism okay he mentions that too i was confused by that a perceived lack of
professionalism has followed jari for a decade the perception reared its ugly head again in the first
period against Buffalo when Jari strolled behind the net to retrieve a puck, looked one way and
then another before Tage Thompson stripped him of the puck. Jari didn't show much urgency in
returning to the vacant net and Thompson beat him there. That kind of movement can lose a hockey
team. The Penguins will say all the right things, of course, but it's painfully evident they're more
confident in playing in front of the guy with three games of NHL experience. So there's a lot
of whispers and like this is something i would need uh more insight from uh maybe josh but someone
who knows the penguins a little bit better when they ditched matt murray for um for tristan jari
there was an air of uh they weren't terribly shy about it yeah uh and the impression i got
was matt murray knew he wasn't wanted there and i wonder if tristan jari is going through the same
thing well and i look at that and i go i don't know if it's the style that sullivan has them
playing i would imagine that confidence is playing into this but tristan jari does have
real talent he's an nhl goaltender but he did lose their trust last season and he has not gained it
back yet yeah the playoff series thing like the penguins haven't won a series in a while
lost in all that is they should have like there were a few a few of those years there was one
against the islanders he was so bad so bad and they should have come away with that series and
didn't so he ends this he ends it kind of here he said the numbers are atrocious his body language
is even worse and it's not like the penguins are without capable replacements i think nadalkovic
is ready to play uh he said his contract is likely unmovable that's not on jari that's on
Kyle Dubas but the Penguins front office and uh boss and his staff are not powerless they could
put him on waivers send him to Wilkes-Barre uh where he can work on his game his cap hit in that
circumstance would be reduced by 1.15 million giving the Penguins some flexibility while Ned
and Blomquist run the show if necessary they can buy him out next summer and one thing I will say
about Kyle Dubas is I I criticized the signing when it happened I thought that was crazy and
and lunacy and the,
and the graves deal also didn't work out.
And both of those deals along with the Carlson trade handicapped them this
summer because they could not go out and do anything on July 1st because
they were,
you know,
strong.
They got Kevin Hayes,
you know,
they got rid of Riley Smith.
They had to bargain bin shop.
Yeah.
But,
uh,
one thing I will say about Kyle is that when he is ready to move on with,
with guys and,
and you can make the argument that waste time.
Yeah.
He believes,
I would argue that oftentimes he believes in the wrong guys.
Uh,
But when he loves you, he loves you.
When he's done, he finds a way.
Yep.
And I'm thinking specifically of the Nick Ritchie move.
Remember when Nick Ritchie was signed for $2.5 million,
and they're like, yep, bye.
Patrick Marleau, they paid a lot to get rid of him,
but they did get rid of him.
Full cap.
Oh, hey, we didn't say they were good.
We didn't say the moves were good, but they did them.
So I look at this, and there's already an article
in The Athletic about potential.
Should the Avs go after John Gibson?
which is hilarious.
Oh, they should go after a goalie with a heart.
Why not?
Like any goalie with a pulse.
Why not?
Jari is a guy that can play in the NHL
and has been a starter and should be a starter.
I look at a guy like Jari
and I look at a team like Pittsburgh and go,
could the Avalanche work something out there?
What do you think?
Like a Jari Georgiev swap?
And Pittsburgh retains on Jari?
I never thought we'd get here with Jari,
but like...
He needs to change the scenery.
This is a goalie, man.
This is an NHL goalie.
Could you somehow make a Merzlikens deal work?
A Huso deal?
I know, dude.
Merzlikens?
I know.
I need to know if he can play.
Dude, but if he's this bad, there's four more years.
That's crazy.
That's devastating.
You can't get rid of it.
But you're going to have to flip bad for bad.
Oh, it's fully project for project.
And I look at Tristan Jari, and I think Georgiev's better than Merzlikin's, too.
As bad as Forgiev, as they're calling him.
No, Georgiev's not this bad.
I know what Avalanche fans think of him.
He's had a horrible start to the season.
If he were this bad, he wouldn't have won over 40 games or whatever it was.
That's what I'm saying.
I wonder if you're going to do the John Gibson talk, why not Tristan Jari?
30 years old, four more years.
if he's if his salary is cut in half it's two and a half million bucks i do know dubas kicked
tires on john gibson um when he was with the leafs i do know that so jari maybe a jari gibson swap
it's entirely possible why not why not anyway just something that jesse any thoughts i don't
think it's reasonable for the pittsburgh penguins to retain salary on tristan jari if he's not good
enough to play nhl hockey it's only three more years it's it's okay this year plus three after
it so for total but if the first thing you got to do is send him down to the american hockey league
and hope somebody claims him um and then that's just out of your hands and then i think you get
to a point where if he's unplayable you buy him out because i don't know if there's a trade candidate
i'm not retaining on tristan jari if he can't play like i'm not gonna have that on my years i'm not
gonna have that on my books okay so so you'd rather have him on the books at a million dollars
reduced then in terms of like sending him down yeah yeah i think the the first option because
And the Delcovich went yesterday to Wilkes-Barre Scranton
for his conditioning stint.
So he's getting ready.
And your two goalies are going to be in Delcovich and Bloomquist.
So your first option is you send Jari down,
see if any GM wants it, and then you go from there
and you see your other solutions.
You can't have a guy moping around your organization either.
If he's actually emotionally checked out,
you do have to do something.
You send him down.
And I don't, by the way, I don't blame him.
I don't blame them.
I think it's a situation where they need it.
I think there's a change coming.
There's been guys with higher pedigrees than Tristan Jari that have had to be sent down.
Yeah.
Because they don't have it anymore.
Yep.
Yeah.
Or they need to find it.
Or they need to find it.
Yeah.
Look at Ilya Samsonov last year.
Yeah.
You know, and then so you have like one side of the coin, which is Ilya Samsonov gets sent
down, available to everybody.
He finds his game in the minors.
Jack Campbell gets sent down, can't find his game in the minors, you know.
But then he did.
And then he did in the minors.
It's just we stopped paying attention.
But he can't get back to the NHL levels.
Right.
Yeah.
And so you have this first option.
Go from there.
Yep, absolutely.
One to watch.
Let's get to Frank Corrado.
Welcoming on Frankie Corrado from TSN,
formerly former Penguin, former Vancouver Canuck,
and member of the VIP club
because he appeared on one of our VIP episodes this summer.
Frankie, welcome back, buddy.
Thanks for coming on.
Oh, man.
It's nice to be a VIP.
I don't care where it is.
Just to hear that you're a VIP.
Very cool.
Thank you, guys.
It's an honor.
You're a special man.
You're a special man.
Now, Frank, listen, I texted you because I wanted you to come on and react way too early to things.
And so before I ask you questions, I want to know, is there anything that you're like, God, I can't believe this.
What is it like?
What's hit you with the first five, six games of this NHL season?
I can't believe.
OK, if it's Leafs specific, doesn't have to be.
I can't have to be.
OK, it doesn't.
I can't believe the Colorado Avalanche.
I mean, look at all the guys that are hurt there.
um so i guess it kind of does make sense but i didn't expect them to be oh and four didn't expect
nashville to be oh and four um you know just with all the buzz around those guys toronto centric
i kind of expected joseph wall to be available like you had all summer to to be ready um and
you know not ready clearly so just yeah i think there's there's a few things that have kind of
caught us by surprise but and and i guess edmonton just kind of getting off to a slow start although
So think about the emotional high or how draining that would have been
going all the way to the finals and losing in Game 7.
How do you find that energy in the early going of the season?
But yeah, it's been interesting.
And I don't know, there's a lot of storyline.
Tampa Bay is pretty good.
Have you seen that?
It was funny.
I was talking to someone in Vancouver,
and they were talking about the game because the Canucks just played them.
And they were talking about Vasilevsky.
And I'm like, yeah, welcome to the Atlantic Division.
where you have to play Vasilevsky and Bobrovsky and Swayman
and who am I missing?
And Allmark now who has his own team.
Welcome to the Atlantic, my friend.
You do it twice a year.
So, yeah, it's interesting.
The Joseph Wall thing is very interesting
because things are going so well in Toronto.
We're winning and there's no real problems.
Imagine if Treleving didn't go out and get Stollers.
I prefer not to.
it was a dire situation where you have like matt murray and hildeby who have to hold the net down
while we wait for joseph wall to become healthy how about this like okay he picked the right goalie
too yeah like what if he signed you know it's early but what if it was the lankanin or kakanin
or it's like they picked the right guy with yeah exactly they picked the right guy with stolar so
i think that's you know that's a credit to them and like his numbers have been really good the
only thing that would have maybe spooked you off is that you know prior to you know let's call it
the last couple years he had been hurt you know 27 games is the most that he played and you're
theoretically putting him in a situation where you know he's got to play 30 to 35 plus even if
joseph wall is healthy right so that's the only thing that maybe would have spooked you but they
picked the right guy so credit to them for identifying him yeah brossois got injured at
the end of august was it like a match and it's hurt too colorado claimed him on waivers from
winnipeg because georgiev is has like the worst goal save above expected in the history of the
game wow you know and and they wanted this the kaken and he's hurt he's on the ir like everyone
else so you're right jesse like there's guys already getting hurt that were supposed to be
goaltending answers for other teams they're one signing away from this being a disaster start in
toronto yeah well they're not so what do you mean but it's not but it's not what do you that's a
very me thing to say not though i i know we want to stay current here but when you were talking
about vasilevsky it's like people forgot how good he is uh and welcome to the atlantic was there ever
a just a miracle goalie performance that either happened for a team that you were playing for or
against the team you were playing for where just for those 60 minutes that goalie decided i am god
oh my god yeah there is one there's one there's a couple in the minors that stick out i gotta get
this guy's name he played for the providence bruins um and he played in the nhl a little bit
and this would have been 2017 2018 we played them in the first round of the playoffs i was
i was out after game one like i had um a high ankle sprain the guy's name was zane mcintyre
that was the goalie's name it was the first round in the ahl is like a game it's it's best of five
right and so it's it's game five we were wilkes-barre scranton like wire to wire best team
on that side where you get providence and this guy in the last game put together a performance
that like just i don't know if he'll ever have that kind of performance again or if he ever ever
had that kind of performance again like it was an absurd amount of shots in game five and it's just
like it was probably just like an out-of-body experience for him do you have zane mcintyre's
numbers there i will look it up i don't even know hold on zane zane mcintyre db i'm looking right
now in the playoffs like you got to find the playoff game log and nhl or or a no this would
be ahl okay ahl playoffs so like 2018 calder cup playoffs pulling them up i just want to know if
he did anything in his career okay regular season plus post 20 2017 2017 calder cup playoffs i know
i'm chopping it up right now providence bruins okay well he had an he had a 914 in the regular
season 50 saves on 51 shots in game five there is a nine down yeah it was it was april 30th 2017
it was 50 saves on 51 shots on the road and a 980 save percentage in a decisive game five like
What do you do?
What do you do?
Game of his life.
He played eight total games and they came after that.
They came the season after that.
He's currently in the wild system,
but an 858 save percentage at the NHL level,
397,
zero,
four,
and one.
So he's never got to win.
Yeah.
Has he not yet got to win?
I don't get it.
Isn't that nuts?
I don't get it,
man.
On that night,
on that night,
that guy was like in a different stratosphere.
Yeah,
exactly.
Wow.
that's cool i like that colorado bound caught maybe could be now now frankie i i brought up
the bad side of the pittsburgh penguins which is the goaltending tristan jari and and and all that
so we've kind of talked about that on the show i want to talk about the good side which is gino
uh passing uh you got the 500 goals you got the 1300 points and cross 1600 oh yeah cross we got
1600 but i want to talk about gino because gino's leading the league in points uh along with their
temi panarin right now and you know you played with gino uh what's the guy like to play with
it's a it's a great question because i was not like exactly established there in pittsburgh
like i would get called up i would hang around for a couple weeks maybe play a game maybe not
go back to wilkes-barre come back so like i don't even think he really knew my name
or anything like that you know we were just kind of like teammates in law at that point
i like that but like see you again franklin i don't even think it was that it was but like um
so so good with his stick like this is what would always freak me out in practice like you kind of
think you have him and it almost looks casual and it's like bang bang and he got through you or like
he made this slick little pass like he was so good at like making it seem like maybe he had let
his guard down a little bit or it looked casual and then it just in a second it was like whoa i
did not see that coming like very very elusive very slippery that way um he's an interesting
guy because like he's he's he's interesting in the room like he's upbeat like he's always kind
of wanting to be in whatever joke is is being said or whatever and um there's obviously you
know at the card table he would hang around with some of those guys and um he would always be one
of the loudest guys there um but yeah like i i kind of think you know it's funny now watching
him do what he's doing remember when they did the top 100 players correct me if i'm wrong he's not
in that he was right he was not in the top 100 players and i think he made the joke he's like
yeah it was actually 101 and here he is at age like what is he 37 now and he's turning back the
clock he looks good like he looks like he looks like he's got a half step more than he had last
year um which is great news for the penguins because they they need they need him he played
a full 82 last year had 67 points he's played five this year he has 11 um that's a that's a big jump
i was i was trying to look it up he has 500 goals did you assist on any of them no i don't think i
got an assist with the penguins um maybe in practice but even i don't know yeah it is you
know it's funny though it's funny like he could drive i think he's so good right but i think he
could drive that coach crazy at times you know like sully is so regimented and detail oriented
and you know malkin's free-flowing right like like i said like can look casual at times and
then really turns it on and so i think there's i would imagine there there have been a few gray
hairs on on sully's head over the years but you have to take the good with the bad like the guy
you guys won two Stanley Cups together and let me ask you this and this would be like you'd have
to go down memory lane here number one center number two center two-headed monster where would
Crosby and Malkin rank on that all-time in the NHL as far as the best one-two punch two-headed
monster well you have Gretzky Messier right I would think what I because it was Ted Lindsay
a center or was he a winger because i think how you're going back that far well this is the thing
well and then you got to go back to like the 70s canadians yes right like there's um early 80s
islanders yeah exactly yeah but i think there's like if you're a hockey historian that's a very
interesting um and it's going to be subjective different eras and all that stuff but like as
far as the modern era goes have we ever seen a better two-headed monster than that like a one
two punch. McDavid-Drysaddle.
And that hasn't
played out. They haven't had as much time.
They got a win. They haven't won.
You got three cups with Crosby and Malkin.
It's not really terrible. Crosby and Malkin
have been one and two
more often, or for a bigger
percentage of their career than
McDavid-Drysaddle.
Because they played together a lot.
Yeah.
They're definitely
top ten.
Likely top five.
yeah likely top five it would have to be top five i would think yeah they're stupid and three cups
together all those individual awards and like you know sid's still doing it gino's still doing it i
know they're not like team's not a contender but i mean so far the early returns on gino this year
looks really good not a contender don't tell them that the nhl did release a list of every player
who assisted on Evgeny Malkin's 500 career goals.
It's 113 players, and I can confirm you are not.
Frankie, you played a lot with Tristan Jari as he was coming up.
Actually, looking at this team, there's a lot of good players on this team.
Greg McKaig, Kostopoulos, Sestito was on this team,
Daniel Sprong, Teddy Bluger, lots of names that made.
Casey DeSmith was on that team as well, or several years of it.
But what do you think is going on with Tristan?
Because obviously there's been a lot of conversations.
He's a very laid back guy.
Some people call it unprofessional.
They're saying the body language is off.
What are your thoughts there?
Because it seems to be since that Islanders game last season
where he lost his starting job, it's been a disaster.
He's very talented.
Like there's no denying the talent that he has.
And he's had that right from, you know, I can even,
he was an Edmonton Oil King.
i think they either went to the memorial cup or won the memorial cup like good like a lot of talent
um when he was in the minors the biggest thing he had to work on was like practicing well and
practice habits like a 10 30 a.m practice like jars wouldn't wake up necessarily until 11 you
know so like the first little bit it's like okay someone tell the jars that practice started to his
credits um he has you know figured that out and now he's you know he's had moments where he's a
two-time all-star and he's been a good goalie in the nhl he's been fairly dependable it's just
for whatever reason like the variance in his game has been so jekyll and hyde and that's the
like that's the million dollar question right now when it comes to goaltenders and signing these
guys long term and giving them you know all this money it's like can you get the jekyll and hyde
goalie or are you going to get a very consistent performance so um and to to i think you know in
jars's defense um there have been years where the penguins haven't been as defensively stout
as they were and they were like a good team you know like they just that kind of fell behind and
so you know the game in the goaltenders point of view kind of falls off with that it's you know
you would have to get more of a peek behind the curtain but i think the the thing that stuck with
me is that he got more professional as time went on because he wouldn't have been like he would
have not been a pittsburgh penguin starting goaltender if he didn't like mike sullivan is
very like rigid matter of fact like you gotta you know you have to come to play be professional all
that kind of stuff like he just jari would never have gotten himself there if he didn't iron those
things out and now i think he's just kind of dealing with the you know the the world of the
nhl being a goaltender if you're not the top set five to seven guys where it's a little bit up and
down wow it's uh it's it's fascinating now now is there anything i want to talk abs and i want
to talk preds in a sec here guys but is there anything frankie that you were like man i was
so right about that before the season started right and now again we're five games in this
is way too early reaction that's what the damn so early everybody get yeah but you're like right
out of the gate do we have enough time to talk about that list i mean it must be here it must
be an enormous the one i i want to say that maybe i was right on is uh seattle is off to a three and
two start they look like they're okay i kind of like i went on a limb saying i think seattle's
going to be a playoff team um and i think la was the team that i had taken out so you know maybe
maybe that's the one it still remains to be seen like they've they obviously believe in joey
so they gave him the five-year extension um you know the chandler stevenson thing is interesting
because a lot of people hate on that contract but he's going to be really important to that team
because look look down the middle of the ice you know it's maddie benears it's shane right like
they need someone who can do a little that grunt work and eat some of those matchups like who can
take on an Eichel or take on a JT Miller or you know to you know McDavid you try your best against
McDavid right but they needed someone who could eat some of those those greasy matchups and so
that's important um having someone who's more of a puck mover on the back end I just I don't know
maybe that's what I'm right about and maybe LA falling off is what I'm right about too but I
don't know like it's just so much time there's so many games to be played you asked me I didn't I
didn't come on here and look in a brag um uh we were talking about this too guys like we you know
john gibson has been in a bazillion trade rumors for pretty much since he signed that extension
uh and you know the avalanche are bad in net right now they've already been linked via the
athletic this morning potentially does this make sense whatever um if you're the avalanche you've
got natushkin uh in in the substance program and we you know he's in recovery and so he's still at
level three not available to come back you've got landis cog who might come back but you're not sure
so you're kind of hamstrung by the is there is that do you make a move like john gibson
now or this season or do you just go we're gonna have to play it out the way it is and it is what
it is well i think at some point like you have to contemplate it and i would imagine you start to
kind of test the marketplace and but the thing is like it's so early i'm sure anaheim doesn't
even really know what they want to do yet like no one's gonna throw you a lifeline and just say
here have our starting goalie like all the moves that were available to be made were kind of made
and they they tried to do one they did the cat the kakanen thing on on waivers and you know that
guy's he was on the ir as far as i checked yesterday um like i was looking at colorado
and some of the other teams this morning.
They're, you know, expected goals
versus expected goals against.
They're actually in a good spot.
They're just, the goaltending is so bad.
And that's with, you know, Landis Gog out,
although I don't think you could count on him playing.
No Nachushkin, no Lekkonen, no Druin,
no Devon Taves, Miles Wood was day-to-day.
Like, take away that in any other team,
any other team in the NHL,
you're going to get the exact same result.
But if the goalie can even play average,
like if he could just play average
or maybe just slightly below average,
they will put together wins.
Like, it's just, I can't believe the goalie's as bad as he's played.
Like, I don't think he's that bad of a goalie.
What is it like, you don't need to name anybody,
but I know you've played on lots of teams with lots of different goalies.
What's it like in the room when the goalie's just not giving you a shot?
You hope the other guy plays.
you know that's all you you okay it's not something it's not something you're gonna like
openly talk about like there's not like a huge dialogue about it because you obviously like the
guy feels terrible that he can't play he wants to stop the puck you want him to stop the puck
everyone wants to win so like you have you have this feeling that like the guy's just working
through something and he's going to find it and as long as the guy you know shows up to practice
and puts in a good effort and is trying there like you can kind of see that like the guy cares enough
so you know at the end of the day like you know guys want to hold each other accountable sure
guys are demanding with themselves so i'm sure they're demanding with others that's all acceptable
but if you can like guys have a heart at the end of the day if you can see a guy is like working
through something like you can understand you can kind of understand it um so you just i don't know
you just try and be a good teammate talk to the guy when you can let him know like i don't know
hey it's all good buddy like move on to the next one and and we'll you know we'll try and get that
one back for you like there's not much you can do really as a player um and this happens like
goalies go through it and like you just you have to be a good teammate about it i think that's the
that's the best way to to try and i don't know that's the best way to go around it if you're a
player on the team there's a clip going around recently of sydney crosby that i absolutely love
and somebody made a mistake around the net and it led to a goal for the penguins and he's sitting
on the bench and all the guys are giving it to the guy who made the mistake and crosby looks over and
he goes down the bench he's like quit it guys i think he knows and in that moment the guy who
made the mistake knows he fucked up he doesn't need to hear it from his teammates and crosby's
like shut up like he knows he made a mistake he's gonna try harder next time and i feel like
if you're a professional athlete and you're playing bad you know like you don't need your
teammates to ever put you down you know there's enough information out there you know how you're
playing so i feel like that's so true you know you do know and if if you want to hide from it
you're not going to get better as a player um the the other thing that that kind of comes to mind
with that um is that like the quicker guys can flush things generally like the the better they
are for it like there's some guys they go out there they make big mistakes every once in a
while and you know what it's like yeah forget it it's over and then they put together you know
another 20 minutes of like stellar hockey like you know everyone goes through it at some point
but the guys that don't dwell on it those are the guys that seem to have more success and
like you don't need you don't need your teammates telling you um hey you messed up yeah i know i
messed up if you see the guy is um you know if he's not i don't know if he doesn't practice hard
if he doesn't get in the gym if he's lazy if you see all those bad habits that that's when you kind
of have the green light to say like okay all this other stuff is affecting what you do on the ice
and now that's affecting our team but if the guy like if the guy is putting together a good effort
and you can see it and he's a good teammate and he makes a mistake okay we all make mistakes you
don't need you don't need to pile on like this is the way i would describe it when you make a
mistake in the nhl it's like i've done this pizza or missed a missed assignment in front goal goes
in minus one goal horn goes off there's 20 000 people in the arena and it feels like it's just
closing in on you and it's just like every person and every camera is on you and it's your fault and
then it's like this squeezing and then you then you have to go back to the bench and you have to
find a way to just do this and decompress it take a few deep breaths because you still have the whole
game to play and you have to be good for your teammates like yeah you know when you messed up
um that brings me to the moment we led the show with today frankie uh which is craig berube
telling the leafs midway through the third period the other night to wake the fuck up uh and and
what you know we talked about sort of the culture shift because because you know sheldon keith might
go the route of okay guys let's calm down we can figure this out gotta i'm gonna ask you to bring
your intensity up craig berube was like gain the offensive zone let's go hunting wake the fuck up
and and so let me ask you as a player as a player analyst how do you react to that and then my
follow-up to that will be who's the scariest yeller you ever played for uh and did anyone
ever strike the fear of god in you because it felt a little like that with berube okay there's
two two very good points i think with the berube thing sheldon keith runs hot okay like i don't
think sheldon was the type to just pat everyone on the back and say it's okay guys we're we'll
get going here like he runs hot the difference i think with that interaction in berube and maybe
what sheldon may have done is that sheldon may have let it run its course a little longer to
see if the guys can figure it out and then like he would step in and he would call the time out
or he would use the TV timeout to blast his team.
Whereas I think Berube just kind of like shot from the hip there
and said, I've seen enough.
Like this is, if it was eight minutes,
it was eight minutes too long for me to see of that.
And I'm just going to shoot from the hip
and I'm going to make sure that like they know earlier
that this is not going to fly.
So I don't think it's a matter of mentality.
I think it's just a matter of patience,
how long you're going to let it go for.
um as far as like scariest coaching tirades like there's there's a torts one that we had in detroit
at the joe lewis arena that's like should be in the hall of fame of tirades oh yeah yeah that was
that was a wild scene i forgot torts was your coach in vancouver i forgot yeah yeah so there
was yeah we were at the joe and like i i can't tell you what was said obviously but let's just
say like there was a hall of fame of coach tirades this would be like first ballot um and then i had
a coach in junior um awesome guy um i'm pretty sure he's with calgary's farm team his name is
trent cull um great coach um really demanding of guys so you know the big orange gatorade coolers
yeah right so we were playing god i hope he doesn't get mad at me for telling this story
but we were playing in saginaw and we had a terrible period i'm pretty sure it was the
first period and it was like three or four games into the year and we were just awful and like he
was the new coach and he came in and he just tore a strip off the wall in there and as it was ending
he went to like throw the big orange Gatorade cooler but didn't take into account that it was
full and so like as he went to like lift it you could see like within a split second he realized
that like it's full and in order to throw this thing like he's gonna need a little more juice
and so like credit to him like he was he was a really tough guy when he's when he played like
he was a fighter he like you could see that he was like gonna drop it and then like was like no
i cannot look weak in front of these guys after everything that just went and just through this
thing and i'm like that is like superhuman dad strength on this guy and we all just we all just
he left the room and i think we all collectively kind of looked at each other and said like
this guy means business and we better get our shit together i'm surprised he didn't like tear
his pec oh dude i'm sure i'm sure i'm sure he like i'm sure he went to the trainer on the bench
after it was like hey by the way uh you have any advil oh yeah it takes two football players to
carry that thing to dump it on the uh the coach at the end of the super bowl yeah yeah that's
i think i got my point across but i herniated my disc i gotta say so i'm looking at his stats
frank you're absolutely right this is a guy who in the ahl and ihl when it existed regularly got
over 150 and for three seasons in a row got over 200 penalty minutes a year oh he's tough as nails
and a great guy i uh we all like all of us really enjoyed playing for him but that was um
yeah we'll see if he texts me that would be wrangler's head coach uh last year and i think
this year too uh so uh yeah that's that's very cool what a great story by the way what is it
about torts just briefly and i'm not asking you to to tell us what he said we can't take up too
much about frankie i know i know what is it about torts that you're like shit as a player like even
though even as a grown man this guy freaks me out it's a good question because he's not the tallest
in stature but he's just very stern like he's just he looks at you right in the eyes and it's
like he's looking right through your soul and he's very matter of fact and like it's good it's both
positively and negatively right because when he talks to you about something that's like positive
or maybe it's not even hockey, talking about family, friends, all that stuff, you can feel
it. You can feel the emotion, but then you can also feel the emotion when it's negative as well.
And I think that's where that feeling comes from that you're talking about, where it's like, okay,
I got message sent, got the message here. Yes. Well, listen, Frankie, we love you. Thank you
