But god damn it It was also because we hadn't left yet we didn't have any excuses to not do it if we were in our cars already heading home then it's like ah you know shucks how far away do you need to be to not turn around if you're in your car if you're in your car and see is the seatbelt not up or not no no if you're if you're still outside that's here you know but if you're on the road and you're driving then you don't let's say you're at the top so i live there queen street's just like like a few houses like what's what's the address i'm not gonna be exact what's the whole street's a long place okay but you got if you got to queen

street and that which is two minutes up the road queen street i think i think i think kingston kingston road that's not far either it's not but no okay jesse yeah if you if you're on queen you can still turn around okay yeah all right that's right at the end of the street it's a bit too difficult it's too hard to turn it is very hard to turn on also why are you getting the breaking news while you're driving excuse me safe driving yeah so exactly you wouldn't have known that this was happening and unless i were to call you guys because there are no local sports updates in this town anymore so um if uh if you guys heard it it would be for me because i saw it on twitter yeah and i'm sitting at my house your friend has to call you like the olden days adam goes six

four yeah seven we could always do zoom too we could yeah we could go home and just record on zoom yeah well listen john we tested this though i with uh babcock getting fired oh yeah i had just gotten to my car but because it was in the heart of downtown toronto and every kilometer is 10 minutes and i was like no i'm not i'm not turning around yeah we said fuck it that day the biggest news like ever and we were like no it was like 30 minutes after we finished recording and we said now to be honest other shows on my way home from that one we didn't know we didn't know at the time like i think the the rationale with that was just given the show that we have it's sort of hilarious and then when we've had time to think because sometimes like john klingberg signing a one-year

deal i mean good for john not earth-shattering mike babcock was like that was earth-shattering it's big firing well and i remember a big reason why we just left the episode up as it was is everything we said still applied nothing had changed about how we were talking about babcock 100 because that was the those we just outlined the reasons he could get fired and that's why he got fired and it's babcock's fault yeah but that's what it was and then um last episode we did have to add the addendum hey here's what happened to klingberg here's where he went yeah but all our reasoning was correct like we're and we're like okay he's probably getting taylor hauled he's gonna sign a one-year deal at a big money number and it wasn't even that big money no the taylor

hall thing in particular was something we talked about days in advance of when he fired his agent we're like oh so he's getting taylor hall here he's gonna have to settle for whatever's left on the table and then everything kind of happened so it wasn't like too much had to be redone but it was very funny yes he signed a one-year deal big money with a bad team and then you were talking about how you're just like oh people want to go on vacation it's august how many gms are working through this entire month someone's gonna sign today you better get some deals done right now else you might not have time to get deals done um there it is considering that tampa bay signed sergachev um answer eight years at 68 and then sorelli was eight years at 41.6 oh but you're

using the defensive sorry this is why you don't cut off adam i i considering those guys signed um clingberg has got to be a little upset with the way this summer went i think he's got to be a lot upset and i well not just the summer though because well the whole year yeah that's the context right is he's oh my god jesse just played a video of him driving a car um that won't be in the show so oh well he did this is why we just keep rolling see what are you what are you new here god anyway um where what so we're talking about klingberg and how he must be upset oh yeah no the context is this has been going on since like i don't know halloween the this probably started over a year ago actually oh yeah when they could have extended them yes um so and it

became clear that they were like we're uncomfortable with what you're asking us for and here's the thing john klingberg is 29 and he's going to be 30 in 12 days and when you're looking for eight years the eight-year deals for whatever reason that number 29 looks a lot better than number 30 doesn't it and when you're trying to be a guy when you're trying to say that you're the guy that is deserving of the seven or eight million over that amount of time people are going to try to look at you and try to start to poke holes and when you look at john klingberg's game as valuable as he's been to the dallas stars there are holes in this in his game well and you're gonna you're gonna sign a guy to eight years that'll take him to 38 you need to be a near

flawless player and he's great he's a great player but like you know who else is great now some cadre should someone be offering them eight years probably not they will and we'll get to that maybe not at a big money number though like the the number that you if you do sign for eight years yeah if you're klingberg or whoever the number needs to reflect that listen you're not going to be as good by the end of it and the money can be front loaded to a certain extent and that would make a lot of sense and it could go down as your career goes down and that would make a lot of sense but at the end of the day you're on the wrong side of 30 it's a tough one you're also when you sign that when he signed his original deal the cap wasn't going to be flat and

now it is so that economic reality has changed right so he he is not going to make the money he probably would have made just based on the fact that the cap value uh cap yeah cap value would have gone up so his percentage against the cap maybe it's eight maybe it's nine percent when it's 90 million versus 82 and a half million or whatever it is this year 83 it's different that's a different number we don't talk about that enough no no yeah because i think percentage i think a lot of gms look at it that way well how much percentage of this cap is this guy going to take about the biggest i think the best comparison i could find for uh john klingberg and also making it about the leafs because both must be true hell yeah uh is morgan riley and morgan riley is 28

years old uh he makes seven and a half million dollars he is beginning an eight-year contract right now he's already turned 28 he's a couple years younger so that accounts i mean you don't mind having that 36 feels a lot better than 38 right if that when that contract expires because that's what he'll be but beyond all that they're essentially somewhat the same guy you can understand why klingberg's like well i gotta be worth like what is this really um both great offensively both major question marks defensively at least if you look at the advanced stats um but still extremely valuable i i just i wonder with klingberg realistically guys did john klingberg and john shannon made this argument on sakaris and price uh last week did john klingberg

overvalue himself did he ask for too much way too much because there's or his agent like in real estate you can be like okay i i'm gonna count i'm gonna i'm gonna offer you you want 500 grand for your house i'm gonna offer you 450 and the next person says you want 500 grand for your house i'm gonna offer you 400 you're insulted by one by the other you're like i feel like we can bridge that gap and i feel like john clingberg kind of did that the opposite way asked for too much to the point where teams thought i can't i can't even bridge that you know what else really doesn't bode well for him six goals 41 assists 47 points in 74 games that's stellar it's great defenseman but gms are old school and kind of stuck in their ways in many ways he was a minus 28

and even if that on a good defensive team on a good defensive team and even if that doesn't count against him how many points do you have in seven games in the playoffs i don't know one he had one assist in 26 penalty minutes so it's not even that he didn't have an impact it's he made it so that he couldn't have an impact because remember he randomly kept fighting matthew kachuk yes yeah i think a lot of that too i forgot about that i think that was him trying to make his presence known i think it but it was ineffective it didn't work it was effective in in challenging the other team and trying to play the quote-unquote playoff hockey yeah but we all know we all know why the stars made that series a series jay cottinger he had nothing to

do with jay cottinger's success i think i think playing defense when your goalie's stopping a lot of pucks is helpful i think the reason the goalie had to stop a lot of pucks is because of your defense or lack thereof i think i think john clipper was trying to make his presence known in that series than he did with by fighting by losing to matt kachuk several times well and and uh fit matters greatly for a guy like klingberg yeah and this isn't this isn't the greatest comparison because he's better than this player but when the leafs brought in tyson berry oh yeah great oh he's not on the top penalty or he's not on the top power play not usable not usable or he is on the top power play but now morgan riley is far less effective because we have a 72 point

defenseman who's playing on the second power play unit because we're trying to smush this triangle peg into a round hole for some reason like he has to be the top power play guy on whatever team he's going and he will be in anaheim well yeah but now now i'm like well who on anaheim is now getting kicked off that spot well is it is it cam fowler yeah and you know here's what i would say about the ducks if i'm cam fowler you have to have that conversation with cam be like cam listen you're here for the long term you're here till you're 34 unless we trade you six and a half million dollars and he's always in rumors too john klingberg this could this could work really well because here's what needs to happen john klingberg needs this to be a success and the anaheim ducks need him to be

a success not because the ducks need this to be a uh a playoff season if they did it's the nhl who would be surprised that a team that was objectively garbage last year became a playoff contender but let's let's think in more realistic terms here anaheim wants to pump and dump this guy yeah right that's what they're they're they're trying to sign this player so hey here's seven million dollars for future assets literally they could have got them they could have given them two years yep but no they gave them one and you know what they've got some young up-and-coming defensemen maybe tries though absolutely maybe that's a guy that you want want them to be learning from right i'm just i i just can't help but look at so i'm looking at their

top producing guys from last year fowler had 42 points and shattenkirk had 35 those are two offense first defensemen who need their power play cookies and one of them's not going to be on the power play at all right unless you have two defense which you could because they're not they're deep the ducks aren't very deep up front but i would say but my point in this is anaheim needs this to succeed as badly as klingberg does so if he was going to give himself the best chance to get a long-term deal maybe it's not eight years maybe it's six that signing is actually pretty smart because anaheim needs him to be successful so they can maximize his value at the trade deadline he is going to get the ice time he has to if i'm the gm and we're rebuilding and

anaheim doesn't have they've got a great ownership group but they've got an ownership group who will spend when the team is at that level but when they're not the salary comes down right they're not they're like they're not like a cap team every year right part of me wonders if anaheim's stupid like a fox i wonder if milano goes back oh maybe he does i don't know yeah there's another guy where you go did he overvalue himself why hasn't he signed yet it's a it's a it's a unique summer like players you can find great depth why the hell what did did teams with control over elia samsonov dylan strome and sonny milano not pick up those let them go they just let them go that doesn't make any sense that doesn't happen in a in a bygone era but no no it's 2022 um john

chan and also wondered about nazim khadri but we're hearing this morning he said i wonder if nazim khadri overvalued himself asked too much uh sign with the islanders well and that's the this morning is that um uh fisherman hockey uh reporting at fisherman hockey um basically that um it according to thomas drance uh drance believes cadre has signed with the islanders because uh the jt miller trade is still not happening uh like they apparently went back to the table remember how the jt miller which trade was gonna happen and then it got leaked and then it didn't happen apparently it might come back it might happen okay but then now it's not going to happen there are other sources out there i'm not sure how reliable saying

the deal is done why is lou like well in this particular case he might not be waiting for september to announce the deal they may need to clear cap oh so and and lou being lou and understanding how this works as soon as you are over the cap the chances of other teams helping you out is like next to nothing right lou likes a big deal though he does like a big deal so my thinking is he's got i mean he's got the money to sign him but it sounds to me like he signed somebody else so he's got 11 million dollars in current cap space let's say cadre eats up eight of that well who who is the rfa though on the islanders because i believe the rumor was noah dobson noah dobson is an rfa deal oh so a bunch of that a bunch of that 11 keifer bellows and then

Who's up front there? I see a guy up front. That's Kiefer Bellows. Barzal's deal is going to kick a Roman off. Romanov, right. Like none of those deals are going to be particularly cheap. Barzal deal still needs to happen. That is what I mean.

Like he's got one more year at 7 million. And then what's that going to be? You sneaky Pete. What's going on here, Lou? If it is true, he's got to move somebody. Barzal Kadri sucks. Oh, shit. That won't be fun.

No. it's again i keep saying it well listen we have 24 hours tomorrow you're forgetting jg peugeot too there you go there's another one that's a those three centers those are your three centers maybe he's one of the guys who has to leave maybe he's one of the guys who says who the hell knows all i'm saying is that's ugly to play it's not it's uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh playoffs to hockey that's i mean that's all lou wants in the world and scrappy team and lou likes Kadri a lot he does and he maybe doesn't get enough credit for Kadri's success

because the Leafs were awful then Kadri was suspended by the Leafs for four games at the end of a very bad season and after that suspension Kadri had back-to-back 32 goal seasons while also signing a six-year deal so Lou I mean obviously used a you know firm hand with nas but you know clearly believed in him enough to give him up many many millions of dollars and being one of the biggest sweetheart deals in the nhl

by the end of it but you know turned him into a real successful player i could see him doing it again him giving him uh nas his second six-year deal i could see it i think it'll be seven don't you you think he waited till august to get six years i mean he gave seven to zaitsev so anything's possible but oh my god that contract but um that's still not done by the way i think six i think calgary gets six times seven jesse yeah cap friendly in front of you right uh i have the islanders cap friendly in front of me yeah okay and and steve we gave we told you that 11 million 185 is the current cap space of the new york islanders if it's the islanders if it turns out that right after we finish recording this show nas is announced and lose lose out there in the

middle of summer in a press conference because he knows nobody's going to show up he's subscribed uh is it up is it up okay click boom um what's the deal i want you to your way too early prediction on the nasm cadre deal if it's with the islanders what's the amount of money how many years six year's seven million dollars per that's it yeah or lou thinks he's funny like lou it has like an end of career meme lord phase okay six times 6.9 there it is okay no i i i think there will be some sort of acknowledgement that like it's it's like we talked about with the huberto and kachuk deal huberto is an unreal player but if he's looking for eight years if you have the option to sign huberto to eight years or kachuk to eight years it makes more sense to sign kachuk to eight years

because you're getting a better eight years kachuk is great now yeah we'll get better and may begin to tail off by the end of it whereas huberto is closer to 30 yeah huberto is certainly going to tail off unless he's like an abnormality as a human you know what i mean right you have to be special yes like like genetically special yeah and lucky yeah you never you might get beamed in the head you might take a funny hit to the knee you never know what's going to happen or you block a shot funny you never know um and yes that applies to kachuk but again he's going to probably bounce back easier so naz six times seven some sort of special front loading which we know lou is not afraid of ilya kovalchuk um but legal front loading maybe some bonuses involved

as well jesse what do you think that sounds right you think only seven million guys i don't i i don't think it's there you don't think he's an eight million dollar player oh i i do but i just don't think it's there man it's not there yeah there aren't a lot of teams left who can sign like those when were those like dushane and johansson deal signed like i always go back to those dushane or sorry johansson was it was pre-covid 18 wasn't it it was pre-covid if if this is if everything is going as it was yeah nas is signing like a nine-year deal to be a 1a center it's it's not that anymore it's not that and that is what i think he is by the way like a 1a um in the same way that i think that's what matthew shane is like you know yes he had a

really good season last year you're not picking him as your number one center over a number of guys in the league like a lot like more than a dozen but the reality is once you get past that dozen you have to go to a 1a yeah yes and barzal you think projects to be the one is he one of the better first line centers in the league no would he be one of the better second line centers in the league certain probably the best yeah right and that's a big reason why colorado won you know and as good as jt comfort did for the avalanche like you could tell the difference like and there was a funny discourse yesterday about how the oilers could have beaten the avs if they had all these perfect situations

just ignoring the fact that the Avs second line center wasn't in that series. It was a very silly conversation going around. It was a very hockey Twitter in August conversation. I was like, why are we talking about this right now? I was thinking that too with the

Devils going after Andrew Berkshire. I was like, what are we what's happening here? He said that I'm not on Twitter on a long weekend in August. No, it was smart for not to be Honestly, I logged on I don't think most people are

And Andrew had said something about Broder not being a top five goalie of all time Yes And then the Devils You know the Little Miss meme? Yeah, yeah But they said Little Mr. Bad Hockey Takes The Devils like themselves? Yeah, like the New Jersey Devils

And they photoshopped Andrew's face over the Little Miss Thing as well Like those children's books, remember? Oh, good news Mr. Terrible Hockey Takes extra terrible hockey takes yeah yeah it's really funny but his mentions were fine oh i'm sure they were just as you know dealing with devils fans regularly now that like i do i just realize how it's weird because you don't invite it at all

neither was do it no neither andrew or i deserve this man 5600 likes that's tough that is tough you know what it was a it was a good own it was a good own and how about this it's august so um you know it's a uh it's uh it's i'm just looking at the rook lies here oh my god well and like i just responded i'm like listen you're right but also that's funny um i think wischinski was giving him the gears too yeah well wish is a devil's guy yeah um that's that's a conversation for another podcast luke fox put together a list of the top free agents still remaining in the nhl and what the stories are Rasmussen. Nazem Khadri. Let's move on to Patrice Bergeron. Do you think this deal's done with Boston? Yes. Is he actually coming back? Is the Krejci deal done too? Yes! There's a handful of teams who are obviously up to something, and there's also a handful of teams that are just wasting our time.

And the Bruins are one of them. Bergeron is going to be a Bruin next year. Krejci is going to be a Bruin next year. What are we doing here? I think now that Tukorask's wedding is out of the way, I think they can announce Bergeron and Krejci. So those are the top three. It was Kadri, Bergeron, Krejci.

Fourth one I want to talk about who you've heard nothing about other than just memes that pop up because this person is this person. It's Phil Kessel. That's so strange. I don't understand that. He had over 50 points on a terrible team. Iron Man streak. streak but i think i saw a theory and i don't remember where it was

where maybe it was with 32 thoughts where teams uh were philly rather um with keith yandles iron man streak they felt worried about ending it yep and they felt like they couldn't necessarily ice they felt a pressure to not necessarily ice their best lineup every night because they didn't want to be the ones to end this streak you're not going to have that problem with phil kessel yeah he can play he's not going to be you're telling me he's not going to be amongst your 12 best forwards get out of here and that you can't use that shot you don't need him to move too much it's not that he's a bad skater he's not he can still skate and he can shoot like that's a crazy shot and pass he is honestly honest to goodness since phil kessel entered the league

in 2005 he's one of the most underrated passers in the league go look at his numbers well he's got almost 600 assists yes and but he's as his career um has evolved like sometimes a goal score loses it very fast yes because that's all they can do and once that goes away they're screwed but if you look at his career he had the goals had the goals his playmaking went up went went up and now his goals are dying admittedly but i mean with coyotes i don't know if you get an accurate representation to be fair but he was setting up the the very random coyotes that he was playing yes yeah like like bunch of guys phil and bunch of guys like uh even on bad teams someone has to score is a saying that i've heard for many years and it's wrong i want to know they don't i

want to bring something up for you here with phil kessel he is the 30th highest scoring right winger in the nhl ever ever who's on the list to get ahead of him just ahead of him 29 yeah i don't know i think you had it marner no no i don't know you it's an m it's maurice richard he's a point ahead wow yeah wow uh and then shane doan andy bathgate uh shane doan shane doan is like six points up on him who played but 40 billion games shane doan played 1500 games kessel's at 1200 so there's a huge difference right and then you know you go up the list like within the top 10 you got saint louis and i'm working down 20 saint louis 21 mcgillney 22 kovalev uh 23 rod gilbert rangers fans you know what i'm talking about larmer uh mcdonald uh middleton bathgate

don't richard and uh and he's just edged out rick talkett and steve thomas steve thomas by the way 32 all time i just want to say super underrated player phil kessel is well clearly one of the best right wingers of all time in the nhl i don't know why people are allergic to giving phil kessel respect like the dude was second in cons my voting one year he got robbed maybe he didn't even want to 100% robbed they had to give it to crosby because he's sydney crosby but that was phil kessel's cons yes agreed multiple 30 point score um or sorry 30 goal score still a 50 point score two stanley cups like what i'm sorry what don't you like i don't understand i don't understand and also he is even though he's kind of weird because he's kind of weird he's kind of

weird uh people love him for that teams love him for that i'm sorry most elite athletes are kind of weird tell me what you mean by that they're they're all kind of weird you you've seen conor mcdavid's house you're trying to tell me conor mcdavid's not a little bit weird he's a little weird austin matthews is a little bit weird yeah they're all a little bit weird because they're i don't know first of all we know more about them than they know about us let's be honest they live under a microscope but they've all got strange habits i think i've told this story before with alex petrangelo have i told the alex petrangelo story i think you should tell it again well i'll tell it again so i remember i wish i was more curious and asked more questions

when i was younger but that's just one of the things is i think when you're younger you get told things and you're like that's the way it is yep for sure that's the information you trust older people yeah you do i know just the people are trying to tell you the truth but i remember when petrangelo was in junior and this was around when i covered junior oh man this kid he's so mature such a great leader and look at him he's now captain in the nhl twice over i believe is he the captain of the golden knights or is that stone oh stone i think whatever he won the cup with the blues as the captain and oh he's so mature do you know why they said he was mature because he lived by himself and knew how to cook for himself like lived by himself and didn't starve

at the age of like i don't know 19 or 20 i lived by i lived i moved out at literally just after my night or 20th birthday cool well you could be the captain of the st louis blue like that's hilarious is that really the reason yeah like that i moved out i have my own apartment it's like 20 plus a day but that's the standard man like marner and like all the all the big stars like they're all freaking like you guys don't pay attention to like nba pop culture all those dudes are weird all of them but we love them because they're weird i don't think you can get as good at something as they are and not be a little bit strange yeah yep i get that we're all a little bit strange and the people who are elite at anything are a little bit strange phil kessler's

a little bit strange like oh he screamed at evgeny malkin on the bench once and evgeny malkin screamed back screamed at uh dion phanuf on the on the ice once evgeny both of those dudes are super strange evgeny malkin is strange he is very strange dion phanuf robotic you couldn't talk to him about anything and the second you talked about cars like the Dion bot would activate and he could talk about that and had a great time

and was super interested in that you know Phil Kessel is to me he's normal he's weird which makes him NHL normal I don't understand why people are allergic to I wonder if he's waiting out for

a deal that's not like league men you know like i assume a bunch of teams will look at phil castle and they're trying to offer him like a million 1.5 and he's like no i'm still a three million two million dollar player a bunch of things are holding everybody up like paul stassi's not signing for league men no you know what i mean like there's there's a bunch of players out there but teams probably think right now they can get guys like that like zach astin reese and paul stassi for these league men these really really low 1.1 million or whatever and these guys like no i'm just gonna hold out till you do all your rfa deals and there's actually an actual room i i think yeah there's a real

interesting class of players like oh yeah we're gonna wait them out and then i think the guy who sort of ruined it or maybe fixed it for the players is danton heinen signing for a mill and all these guys are like okay well i'm not signing for less than danton heinen so i think everybody thought that oh we're all gonna all these guys that are left are just gonna do a million a million a million and these player agents are like no we're not sitting out here just taking the scrap heaps like these are actual legitimate players that are going to play for a couple million dollars it is the year of our lord 2022 yes and lou lamorello is still holding the national hockey league hostage he is like now now i'm sort of looking at it remember i kept

saying it's the cadre signing that's holding everything up yeah no it's a dude in his late 70s who is also lou lamorello extraordinarily weird he's but he's like a respectable weird that everyone's just like god yeah for sure lou this this dude allegedly according to a story told by ron mclean on this podcast many years ago told his team on an off day no you're going to an event representing i think it was the devils at the time you're representing the new jersey devils you have to wear a suit and he when that team arrived was on the tarmac waiting for them waiting for them to make sure they were all wearing suits weird extremely weird you have to shave if you want to play for my my hockey team weird extremely weird but successful um lou lamorello was born uh
