the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go oh we got hockey to talk about we got buzz to talk about but first let's check out
adam wilde's uh dms for rumors because i told you yesterday that i got it i got a tip i got a tip
before uh before the story came out a week later that brube and mcdavid had met at the toronto
airport and we're eating lunch and i didn't believe it and i i that's disrespectful to the
person who said it to me just try to help me out but i was really nice back i was like you know
like if it's real that's great but like you know i i figured i'm like that might be an ai picture
you never know right in these days of course anyway of course cj uh goes on the podcast earlier
this week and is like hey uh so mcdavid and brube randomly ran into each other at the toronto
airport i was like i had that story typical cj just making stuff up again yeah anyway um uh got
a couple of messages the first one actually this one's a serious accusation this is from peter he
said adam a reliable source told me that they have a picture of pending ufa during radish having
breakfast with carlton the bear mcdonald's whoa could be a loophole to get a head start on free
agency uh or do mascots count against tampering rules i don't actually know you know it actually
goes crazy like it's probably their most un underrated menu item pancakes yeah i've heard
the pancakes are good but you can never get me away from the egg mcmuffin you can no i know you
could never separate me from that adam uh there's room for both kelsey also wanted to say hey adam
i think i saw chief going to the rebel stork uh rebel stoke forum last night he might be
interviewing for a job with the grizzlies yay so anyway just uh just a heads up and and a bazillion
others so now every time i get an instagram dm i'm never gonna trust it that well that's all
that's all i got so far oh that's all i got a few other ones two best ones rest of them suck
The rest of them are a lot of swearing.
Listen, sometimes we swear right off the top of the show,
but I like to usually bury it a little bit later.
You're Steve in a Habs jersey.
All right, now.
Last night, and Canes fans are all over me today,
and they deserve to be.
Freddie Anderson gets a shout-out, guys.
Freddie Anderson gets a shout-out.
Freddie Anderson does nothing on the way to getting the shout-out.
But, like, the Habs manufactured nothing.
Like, take a nap before the game, Montreal.
My God.
we need to have the conversation adam was that the least impressive shutout in stanley couple
it might have been history but no i'm kidding you know what i gotta give freddy his flowers and i
and i said that but i did say in the first game i'm like hey they got some shots on him and he
let in some goals and then game two 12 shots two goals but yesterday let's be honest montreal got
wrecked run over destroyed booed on their home ice they were so streaming that game for at least
half of regulation it wasn't outright booing but you could tell everyone in the building was pissed
off like it wasn't quiet it was loud grumbling murmuring of everyone going like i know someone
who drove five hours to be at that game they have a hard enough life as it is they're a habs fan in
toronto that's tough they go all the way there they're there with like their son this is a
father son bonding moment and they watched that and then eventually it was actual booing and yes
bronx cheers after they did some stuff at the very end there was a shot i think it was with a second
and a half to go there's a rowdy montreal crowd one guy in particular play there it must be too
hard to play there well okay so how could they bronx cheer their own people what's wrong with
them let's get right to it they've had a deep run but the reaction to last night's game is going to
make it impossible for them to get anyone this off nick suzuki is going to want to go to vegas
yeah get a return our uh minnesota no no vegas minnesota always florida he's already talking
to me a couple things i want to show you guys so we can get away from the sarcasm uh this is the
heat map according to natural stat trick looks pretty cool five on five unblocked shots uh for
each team if you are listening right now the carolina heat map is basically covering the
entire zone and the
Montreal one you got a little bit around
the net where they usually get some
shots and then there's a few along the
blue line in the bullshit from the half and
then nothing in the middle here I got a question
yeah Carolinas actually looks like
a storm what like
it does I was gonna say Montreal
looks like a minor spill on the
carpet Carolinas looks like the
Milky Way yeah
yeah like holy cow
man yeah it's that's bad
Montreal the other one I want to bring up
Montreal has the least amount of
shots ever through three
games of a playoff
stretch or was it three consecutive
yeah so Canadians set Stanley Cup
playoffs record for the fewest shots on goal
over a three game span of a playoff
series which is 43
yes they have 43 shots on goal I mean
listen they need
Ron McLean last night
was like Montreal should feel good
and I was like
uh now steve when i brought it up to you this morning you were like well overall they should
overall on the whole scope of the playoffs yeah no listen habs fan in the same way that i'm talking
about vegas already having the cup all habs fans are talking like this is over yeah it's over yeah
and i keep going yeah but 2021 and they're like stop it yeah one guy had the audacity to be like
you're forgetting about the other key player in that scenario i was like oh the leafs and
they're stupid yeah as a franchise right there is so much to be happy about for the montreal
canadians yes the rebuild started in the 21 22 season yeah it did that is how recently they
completely bottomed out and like sort of by accident oh they were completely by accident
well because the year before you're in the stanley cup final and then all of a sudden
price and weber can't play anymore you're in the cup final price and weber can't play and if you
remember I want to say COVID protocol was still very big they were dipping into their ECHL team
yep they were calling up guys from the ECHL it's I can't even remember it was the first
quote-unquote normal season back because it was the first 82 games nothing normal about it for
them it wasn't normal and there because schedules off and remember they took a while to get the
schedule back to where it should have been but I think with Montreal like as I as I said I cannot
believe in our core four era we got one game seven of a second round they have been to the
western conference final rebuilt their entire team and are now in the eastern conference final
and we all agree this is the worst it's going to be for them like this is only getting better
barring injury uh which is obviously the great equalizer uh they have two goalies of the future
they have d men who are going to be in their lineup who aren't even here yet they have got
forwards who are going to be in their lineup who aren't even here yet uh they lane hudson is so
young i forgot how young slavkovsky is like that guy was yeah first overall but 2022 yep uh suzuki
is like and you know pretty much beginning of prime caulfield's maybe beginning of prime
just scored 50 goals demidov is a fetus uh like they're only gonna get better as we mentioned
yesterday haggie uh or haji nick haji uh that's gonna be good you know there's the ryan rocker
you said yesterday is not a full-time nhl they're gonna have but you know uh sometimes yeah you get
schooled by a team that's just flat out better and carolina has been flat out better than everybody
in these playoffs in terms of their each opponent they've been like yeah okay i mean they conceded
one game so far uh like a series fleshes out the story right yeah like and it and it's it's like a
story mosaic but game one happens we know what it is or well we have theories as to what it is we
know what it is now now we know what it is at the time we're like damn maybe montreal just kicked
their ass and maybe this is in carolina's head and maybe they're soft and like jacob slavin's
cooked yeah cooked and unc and washed yes um and then game two happens you're like okay
but they still needed overtime game three happens you're like okay they still needed
overtime and then that happens you're like holy shit yeah they that's the hardest the
habs have gotten run over um in these playoffs and it's gonna take a miracle it's gonna take
an absolute miracle to uh force six let alone seven yeah and like i'll still argue that
the way they played is more strategic than just like getting outplayed by your opponent 100
but when you're playing like that you're playing on a razor's edge and when you don't have it like
they didn't last night like mentally i don't even think they were there like no up to no penalty
where he's just cross-checking guy on the ice in the head like that's that those little things you
can't do that when your whole game plan is we're gonna get really high danger shots and score every
time we get those and when they're not playing like that this is what happened by the way that
was another one so drew and i were back and forth it wasn't to know it was the other cross check to
that matheson the math isn't one with the kind of glove little turn into it yeah he's like uh i think
it's i think it's roughing like i think it's his glove so it's gonna be two i go i think it's
cross-checking so it's gonna be five and naturally the nhl goes you're both right i think that was
the cross checking for two in the head though because they don't give a shit man i guess i
guess it's the severity you gotta be hurt you gotta be hurt yeah not everything is matthews
on dolly exactly and i think in there there's less intent because he does turn into him but
you still gotta call it in terms of like hey if a stick hits a head it's a penalty you know
it's fair enough and then on that's the same uh power play where they get the five on three
uh that because the deno penalty and if carolina's power play was even remotely good you know it
sucks the score could have been like nothing but they have the worst power play in the universe
apparently this is the most dominant playoff run i can think of and their power play is i think 10
i think it's over 10 in this series or over 11 now they stink yeah they need to figure that out
for vegas but um yeah the score could have been a lot higher and when yeah like i said when you're
playing like that uh you can't make those mistakes and they weren't there it was three goals in 247
yeah you're dead you're dead i i knew the habs were in trouble pretty early on in this game
hurricanes get the first few shots i'm like okay okay okay they always do yeah habs haven't got a
shot on goal yet okay okay they never but like they missed the net a couple times they couldn't
get out of their zone they couldn't even get out of their zone and i was like this is a team
that one team is doing what they want the other team is not one team is fresh as a daisy and the
other team is exhausted and they've played two seven game series too yep the habs best case
scenario here is they go into the stanley cup final having already played 21 games
that's i mean they're young but still they're they're human yeah yeah i mean at some point
that's going to catch up with you you can do it for a round apparently you can do it for two rounds
carolina skating them into the dirt and carolina to their credit after that piece of crap that was
game one game two game three and game four they've been more and more and more physical and aggressive
and violent than montreal and they need to be because they're going to have to be against vegas
absolutely it's to beat anybody now but vegas vegas especially yeah i have to drag them into
the muck i saw them the reason i had such a visceral reaction to game one i was like who do
you you you haven't learned a thing from just getting pantsed in front of the hockey world
for several consecutive years that's embarrassing and then game two oh they have learned three
oh game yesterday was vicious they are crushing lane hudson yep yeah that's been their game plan
and that's how they got that goal and the game winner and the ot in the game three you need to
be they need to be doing that to mitch marner and jack eichelman 100 to the carol to the hurricane
hurricanes credit and i brought this up last round and a bunch of hurricanes fans gave me a high five
for just bringing it up this is how they played against the sends and the flyers they did not let
those teams pushed them around and game one now that we have some distance from it is the outlier
yes and that they weren't ready for that they didn't show up and now that the series is getting
deeper they're showing the world that we will not be bullied and now i they're so legit martin
can stall and slave it again little boy sometimes away from me sometimes at this point in the
playoffs i like to kind of pull out and look at the overall picture and one of the things that i
thought because you know i did this with colorado i'm like how long is this window going to last for
colorado i think there's legitimate questions about that sure um and then we keep asking the
same thing about vegas who never have any prospects or picks and they keep being vegas right so it's
possible sure um but i look at i look at carolina and i think boy they've got an opportunity here
for like the next at least three years um to really take advantage of the fact that the atlantic
division is a bunch of murderers and the reason I say that is that name a team in the Atlantic
that doesn't need to make the playoffs next year every single team needs to make the playoffs next
year all otherwise it will be considered a disaster all eight all eight Florida's got to
be there Toronto's got to be there Detroit for sure has got to be there Tampa Buffalo Montreal
if they don't make it that's a huge step back for them who am I missing Boston is the one where I'm
like well they're iffy they could be in an in-between era and i would forgive them yeah
and i don't think anybody's gonna lose their mind yeah this year was a surprise that they
made the playoff yeah and that's true and they've still got great pieces jeremy swayman's one of
the most consistent goaltenders in the nhl his one off year was the bullshit year where they
made him sit out camp over two million dollars yep like two million dollars over eight years
stupid stupid um that's an unforced error by boston the atlantic is the toughest division
in the sport even though this year we thought it might not be it's still sorry it's still tougher
than colorado minnesota dallas because those guys get to feast on shitty teams top to bottom it's
stop it's the best and the most competitive and so listen what did john shika say in in that in
that leaf iron sharpens iron they'll be sharp but i would not be surprised to see both atlantic
series next year round one round two tear each other apart again does iron sharpen iron over 82
games or does it whittle it down into like a tiny shitty coin well i think it does maybe over 82
games but once you get to the playoffs where it becomes just a different thing this is what i'm
saying and and carolina let's be honest about carolina they are heads and tails above anybody
else in their division it's not close it's not uh you know philadelphia sneaking in was a story
washington falling off was a story pittsburgh surprising people was a story but and like all
those teams are fine they're fine yeah but there was how many points that carolina have this year
40,000.
115, something like that?
What, were they second in the league?
Yeah, and Colorado had 120,
but I think they had 114, 115 points.
The next closest were the Flyers and Pens tied at 98.
Carolina?
They're not close.
They hoshooed their way through the season.
Yeah, yeah.
So this is what I'm saying.
I think there's a real opportunity for them to go,
okay, we think we can handle our division pretty good here.
We'll let the other division tear each other apart,
and then we'll just boa constrict them,
which is what they do.
and like how much of this is a testament to just patience in running a hockey team in your front
office because they've had so many kicks of the can here in the eastern conference finals and
they've never really done a true blow up and it's just kind of we're going to tinker around
ehlers comes available we'll bring him in through free agency we'll overpay a little because we can
because our cap's so good who cares we'll try and get ranted and that doesn't work but we'll try
before that yeah again so too they're always trying to fit in like another piece but they're
kind of keeping the bigger parts of it in aho and shveshnikov and tinkering around but playing
one steady type of hockey and with rod brindamore there in the front office and all his assistants
agreeing on the type of hockey to play and keep fitting in players that they think are going to
be good in this system and then you bring in somebody like keandre miller who's having such
a breakout playoffs after having like a ho-hum regular season he's really found his game within
their system third conference final for him that's crazy yeah for him and same with taylor
hall and then jackson blake's a guy who's like they've brought through this thing and then you
just see like all these pieces that weren't like a big swings that they got like a vegas type of
team to build it that way it's kind of a slow process and methodical in in who they want to
have on their team and like big picture last year they did the ranting and trade it didn't work out
they did another rancid in trade and that worked out and well but you have these assets and i
remember criticizing them because they had these assets and then they didn't spend them yes i
remember we were yelling the trade deadline we're like do something with them now in a vacuum though
you sold essentially and made the conference final anyway got swept yeah okay that little chestnut
but they're still in the third round we had to die for a third round one just one and now you're
leading goal scorers logan stanko and i believe yeah uh he's got eight goals and you still got
the futures from that deal i don't remember what they all first and a third and a first and a third
good lord yeah and and that was in consecutive years now i look at i want to say this with
carolina too the way they've managed this patience has been good one thing though i i really respect
about the way that they've put this team together is they haven't been afraid to deviate from their
process where i think we got bogged down in toronto is kyle uh and and shanny i think more
than than we realized but kyle was a very process-oriented guy carolina seems to have in
the past realized when the process has been incorrect and corrected whereas toronto was
like well this is our process and it's correct no matter what the results tell us and and what
what carolina has been able to do uh i know that obviously they weren't able to hang on to these
two players but you know is similar to what anaheim has done in the west when a player shakes
loose from a team that is probably the team is underperforming so the player looks worse than
they are then they grab that player and turn them back into what they were before k andre miller
being an example you know taking advantage of pittsburgh falling off getting jake genzel uh
taking advantage of uh the contract dispute with colorado getting miko renton and then flipping
that for the futures you know that that's what anaheim did with truba with crider uh with uh
you know, signing Granlin in a cap crunch with Dallas.
You find these guys' intelligent signings.
To pause on that.
I think that is the process, you know?
Well, it wasn't our process.
Yeah, I think that is Carolina's process of getting to where they are.
And they let guys like Pesci and who was that?
Brady Shea.
Brady Shea just walk.
Which Sean Walker looks great because he was the guy they brought in that year, I believe.
And then we were like, well, who else is going to play for them?
And they get Keiondre Miller the following summer.
because i think a part of that is they they're not gonna keep these guys if they think like
the aging curve is there there's such an analytics driven organization that they can see okay brady
shea can be replaced by whatever assets we're gonna bring yeah yeah and the like to pause on
ranting for a minute i think 31 other nhl teams would be too stubborn to do what they did which
acquire him and then move off him after two weeks yeah like that was the most shocking
man we feasted on that on this channel the the fact that it happened at all was insane the fact
the second trade happened anyway it was four weeks but even so whatever like like they didn't
they didn't go down with the ship is what i'm saying like they didn't go hey they didn't own
rental it we're not gonna notice how that term never took off because it was stupid yeah yeah
and i think it's okay they only did it half a dozen times we sat there those playoffs and we're
like you got swept bet you would have liked to have ranted and when he went off for dallas and
he scored all those goals and we're like carol i bet you would have liked to have ranted and now
they're sitting there with stan coven about to make the stanley cup final and they're like now
who's laughing well maybe they were laughing into their fucking computers and their calculators okay
no i'm kidding like they're an analytics driven friend office yeah uh hey listen as a as a leaf
fan who does like analytics uh just when they're applied correctly um i hope that that's what the
what john sheik is able to do i don't even think it's analytics necessary you don't think eric
tolsky and all the guys that you know what are analytics driven people they are but the they
just do hockey differently and i think that's why a lot of the old guard in the league what's the
basis of that though could it be could it be the numbers it could be the numbers but what like what
i'm saying is like yes it's the numbers but the overarching theme is new and different and that's
why the league goes ew yuck yeah well and i think the way they apply those numbers is different yeah
because the rantanen thing like it's such a good thing to hammer on because there's a feel to that
too like the numbers aren't going to tell you to get rid of miko rantanen but there's you got to
have a certain amount of cojones to be like this guy doesn't want to be here long term we're so
deliberate with our cap situation and who is on this team we're not going to risk the own rental
to just keep them around for the sake of it to not have the egg in our face of trading a guy we
just acquired and everybody laughing at us because we got stank oven whatever picks for this asset we
acquired and that's really smart and that's not entirely numbers driven i assume there's a lot
behind that and they're how they looked at the future but some of that is feel and just having
the big cojones to do it dude jvr zach hyman what do you mean just what you could have got
why i remember at the time did i not say trade jvr should have kept time jvr hyman was off hyman
is like we're going five million dollars for hyman like fucking give it to me well i was
at the time 21 goal score at in a 75 72 million dollar cap here and he was starting to he was a
first line player he was like no question if a first line winger could have made could have made
five million dollars on the leafs he didn't even get the best years of his career i know i know we
just developed him into the best years of his career for mcdavid listen i i i will be the one
to admit that i was a thousand percent wrong on zach hyman but at the time i was like five million
in that cap era for a 21 goal.
I was not paid to make those decisions.
Well, I want to be smarter than I was back then.
The guys who are paid to make those decisions
should have been better than us sitting there
being like, ah, let him walk.
And that was six years ago.
There was legitimate worry about the way
this guy was going to age.
Yeah.
Because of the game that he plays
and because of his injuries.
Like he had a knee injury at the end of his Leafs tenure
and he's had several injuries in his time in Edmonton.
like that that reservation was legitimate at the time and it's been legitimate ever since
but man when he's healthy he's a killer killer he's an absolute killer out there yes we made
it about the leaf shut up you beat us well i think we have to look at you beat us with a
zamboni driver let us talk about we're looking at it in terms of where we went wrong and where
they went right because their era started around the same time as our era did and theirs has
continued uh-huh and are we our question is can we start because really that era is now closed
with the leafs like it ended last season with the first overall pick we're in a new era well this is
not a continuation of the shanny dubas era true living was the end of that how about this notion
eras are stupid no they're not no no no why no what just uh like time for you need context and
time steven no no no here's here's what i mean by that if you get someone transformational like
mcdavid yeah like okay your window sort of comes and goes as he does carolina doesn't really have
that all they do is they go what's best for us now and going forward and how do we just sort of
keep that window ajar you know yeah it's what are what what's the future the hurricanes dictated by
like right now like what what is their window dictated by uh man uh not nothing they dictate it
like nothing and their management group has been brutal with their contracts that's why
the management group dictates it yeah right up to the most you could argue it's that trio of
aho jarvis and uh and svetch maybe with some slave and slave into it yeah but the goal
any of them without even losing sleep slave and i think would be a hard one to replace don't you
think yeah but i also don't think they do that for that reason right but like i guess what i'm
saying is they're not like here it's like oh man matthews matthews how do you get matthews back to
being matthews man they're not their their future is not dictated by when when when and here's the
deal elias patterson's going to be a cane next year sorry s barry you're going to vancouver
but he's going to come back and he's gonna be great too it's gonna be the move of the summer
i don't know if i'm so sure about that i don't know i think it's happening i don't know if he's
a hurricane what's their cap space at uh 11 million dollars right now currently current
cap space 11.9 oh my god frig off so they still have money to spend because i'll go through the
contracts here they don't spend a lot of money on anybody aho's making 9.75 until 2031
Ehlers is making $8.5 million until 2031.
Shveshnikov is making $7.75 million until 2029.
Jarvis is making $7.4 million until 2031.
And he's 24 years old.
Stankovic is making $6 million until 2033.
It's ridiculous.
The Hurricanes are really good at identifying players who should fire their agents.
Like, what is all of that?
Tulsky has clearly been a grinder on these deals.
and he's coming out just looking great.
Look at Slavin!
The Miller deal, everybody laughed at that 7.5
for Keiondre Miller until 2032.
And now that he's having one hell of an Eastern Conference final,
it's worth it.
I'll be paying for the rest of the time.
Can we also, like, in the future,
when teams just get bad,
especially when they do what the Rangers did,
let's not put it on the players.
Like, they went to the conference final,
the New York Rangers,
and then said, you guys all fucking suck.
We hate you.
Get out.
And then weirdly that the dressing room got a little sad and players started underperforming.
And we all were like, well, it must be the players.
They're cooked.
And, you know, people were talking about, you know, that, oh, that the Carolina Hurricanes
were threatening to offer sheet Keandre Miller.
No, the Rangers wanted him gone.
They wanted him gone.
There's no way they were going to resign him.
It was out there.
it was the room it was rumored all everywhere they're not resigning this player they're trading
this player but here's hockey works very strangely you gotta remember that you gotta go back to
boston and toronto and the phil kessel trade remember burke made a trade i think it was with
the flames to get one of the leafs picks back to basically say to boston listen we'll offer
sheet him we will offer sheet him if we have to we don't want to let's make a deal maybe that's
what carolina was doing maybe that's how they they pushed the trade over the line i mean if you're
the rangers you got to look at it like okay but here's a 26 year old defenseman who up until one
you know that one previous year had been great and all of a sudden he uh he was bad but so was
the rest of the team but it's his fault well here's the difference uh is the leafs instead
of offer sheeting which would have been cheaper decided to grossly overpay yeah well yeah the
draft pick situation for carolina is also looking amazing oh they have a first round pick this year
a fourth and then the leaf sixth and then their own six and then uh i can go here that let's get
bogged down let's go uh kade weber kade weber and march 7th 2024 i'd like to know kade weber
how has that worked out champion so uh um not the greatest just to finish off the draft picks for
anybody listening who can't see it on the screen 2027 they have all of their picks plus a dallas
third in 2028 they have all of their picks plus a dallas first that's top 10 protected and 2029
they have all of their picks that's it's it doesn't make any sense they're how do they have
full draft cupboard plus an extra first and okay so you head into the okay you do you don't win
the cup okay so they lose oh i lost to vegas and sick oh yeah how do i do this next year
what's their big pressing issue what's like oh i don't even need to get over this hurdle
let's scroll to their their what's the roster situation oh no it looks great they have 11
70 kerbillion dollars to spend on Jordan Martinuk and Jordan Stahl.
Two guys named Jordan.
And they're both going to stay.
Stahl will come back for nothing.
And then Gost is bare.
They can resign him.
Chatfield, they need him there.
Nikishan needs a contract.
Or Nikishan.
Nikishan, yeah.
He's an RFA, but they can get that done.
Frederick Anderson, UFA.
I think they'll let him check off.
But none of these contracts are ridiculous.
It's not like, oh, my God, we got to pay somebody $10 million.
no it's like worst case scenario you're starting goalie next year as a goalie you essentially
didn't lose with this year in brandon pussy like who they got for free uh they got if i'm not
mistaken the damn florida panthers signed him and waved him and the panthers claimed him off waivers
hurricanes uh sorry sorry the panthers signed him waved him and the hurricanes claimed him off
waivers and for that eric tulsky thank you for your service that's incredible that yeah and then
they just re-signed him to the they just signed him to this contract i believe all but who's
buried at 75 000 joel nystrom sloppy sloppy tulsky
typical wow it's yeah good for that enviable position sometimes you just gotta bow your head
greatness and and it is and you know look at what they got out of taylor hall
that dude was a throw-in it was a throw-in i forget how he was thrown in what was the
throw-in deal from chicago he was part of the they made a three-way trade i don't remember
if it was the first ranting deal or the second one and hall was just a throwing hall was here
please take this random man and it's taylor hall yeah who's
habs okay some hurricanes fans were like did you call taylor hall dirty what's the matter with you
habs fans hate this guy yeah he is dirty i mean in the in the best way he learned from being a
bruin what he learned from being a 16 and 17 year old going to back-to-back memorial cups getting
run at by 19 and 20
year olds for two years.
There's a hit
that
we can't show you because it belongs,
it's Memorial Cup and not OHL.
Otherwise, I think we would be able to
show you. There's a, Travis Hamanick
hit Taylor Hall at the Memorial
Cup in Taylor Hall's draft year.
And you watch this
hit, your first thought is he's paralyzed.
He's not getting back up.
He returns to the game, I'm pretty sure he scored.
Like, that
is the asylum he was raised in and people forgot about that because of his time in edmonton
right and like his nhl reputation was like kind of a joke for a number of years he wins that mvp
in new jersey that still should have gone to connor but anyway yeah battles injury and everyone's still
like yeah i don't know it's a flash in the pan or whatever he's still an extraordinarily useful
nhl yeah yeah and a pest at that too yep at least could have got him or felino what would have
happened if the chicago blackhawks just said we're not completing the three-way trade and
we're just keeping ranting um i don't think they wouldn't be the chicago blackhawks oh like if they
just kept them yeah so the the blackhawks got ranting in from the avalanche for neil's young
trope uh in a three-way trade that's my favorite nils by the way that's technically how the trade
went the chicago got ranted in and then uh they flipped ranted into the hurricanes with taylor
hall and they got back a third round pick i don't think they can do what if kyle davidson didn't
sign the actual sheet he just kelly mccrimmon did and said the leafs kept rob letters our goalie
now what if he just vegas did it was like no i'm keeping him well we know vegas will probably be
the first team to try this why not somebody's got somebody's got to try it one day there have been
oh man who was it i think it was back in the day of getting to bachov signed a contract with the
detroit red wings i'm pretty sure it was detroit and but he had to clear waivers and the islanders
just went sorry buddy and oh no way and they just took him oh wow and it's like hey you want to
resume your nhl career well it's got to be here sorry buddy we're not letting you pass through
Was it Quick who got traded to, was it Vegas or something when Quick got waived when he left LA?
He was on Columbus and then he went to Vegas.
That was it, yeah.
He was technically a Columbus Blue Jacket for like a day.
Thank you for your service.
Yeah, you never showed up in Columbus.
No, no.
Sometimes life throws you curveballs and you don't have time to get to them.
And that's where TaskRabbit comes in.
And I think you should check this out because here's the deal.
one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to
repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around
on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a
second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing
and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying
And that's why I used TaskRabbit and I employed a tasker.
Here's the thing.

register today at pmcfwalk.ca so it looks like well i guess well steve you're gonna have your
stream tomorrow night this could be it yeah i mean and whatever and you know what just to just
to send off montreal properly uh because we're not doing a show until the following monday which
I'm assuming we're going to be teeing up the Stanley Cup final at that
point, which will probably start, what, Tuesday?
A big shout out to the Canadians for a heck of a run.
Now.
But they're done.
Well, they're going to lose.
Here, let me.
Are they losing Friday?
They're losing Friday.
Sunday.
They should take a nap before the game if they like the way they played.
Let me sing a lullaby.
Let me sing a lullaby to Habs fans.
Okay, give it to them.
Give it to them.
After winning game one against a heavily favored team.
in 2021 they get their ass kicked in game two it was a tight game three and they get their ass
kicked in game four if you want to split hairs the outcome after four games of 2021 was actually
worse than this they weren't outplayed as badly but the score was far worse they lost i think it
It was 5-1, 3-2, 4-0.
They lost game four, 4-0.
Again.
First period of game five,
that team showed up
and it was the first time I'd ever seen them.
Joel Armia decided,
I'm Mario Lemieux for exactly about 20 minutes.
He just decided that.
Obviously, they blow it.
They win it in overtime.
Game six, they run the Leafs
through the boards obviously they blow it they win it in overtime game seven was a joke
do they have another miracle in them it'd be fun if they did i think the hurricanes are a far
stronger more headstrong team than that leafs team was uh sorry what i meant to say was they
were always all great um your proof is in the pudding right it only took half a decade proof
is in the pudding um it's possible and i don't want you to mope into game five going well it's
already over if you want to say to yourself i'm okay with this being as far as we get that's fine
but go into game five with the idea that your team might win that's sports
it's not over stop that stop that if you think it's over don't watch adam you gotta watch be
romantic i'll be watching be romantic about something for the love of god are we guaranteeing
a hurricane series victory well no i'm gonna guarantee a habs loss which means the win
so you're welcome montreal you're welcome i want sunday off
now they're for sure gonna win yeah i know now they're for sure gonna win i got a beer league
game sunday anyway see you game six what does hurricane fans what does keith belly do with
his train whistle now that the habs are out and does he finally see them coming um i think i think
what he says is oh vinnie babadabuchi or whatever it is he'll save us do you know what the trains
schedule is freaking all right i hope he's watched these playoffs what color glasses does he watch
the playoffs then uh you think of red yeah he doesn't have a choice they're both red teams
that's true but he's not cheering for them right maybe he wears the argos color so like a light
blue yeah probably the argos ones cfl's coming up hope he uses those glasses to read the names
of the players he pays money to do you think he has world cup cup classes they're like all the
different colors all the countries flags yes yeah i want to throttle you and then when the game's
at bmo he shows up he's like look all the whole world on my glasses get those tears out of your
eyes he's got the whole world tears out of his glasses belly makes me laugh because i think he's
a bit of a joke he's a genuinely funny human being yeah i've heard he's embarrassed there's
a very nice guy yeah but there are there are there are quirks i think i think it's a little
embarrassing that that guy's running the whole shit would you be like dad dad come on dad dad
hey this is your friend uh vinnie borghini dad i told you a hundred times borghese
sorry vincent that's so embarrassing yeah 100 clutch canadians presented by moosehead canadian
lager we're talking about canadians in the playoffs we're clutch it's in the name and
you know when you're enjoying a nice crispy uh moosehead this summer which steve is dying to do
dying to do i need it in my life you got to be thinking about the fact that canadians are behind
right this is the last major brewery owned operated packaged brewed in canada so mine
i'm going to start with my pick okay my pick is one marcus stone oh mark stone winnipeg alberta
was supposed to miss the western conference final like elliot friedman was on uh nhl network going
hey man from what i've heard it doesn't look good he might not play like whatever and frigid sources
are always good and mark stone's like yeah but i'm the bionic man so i'm not only just going to
come back i'm going to score in like the first period and then i'm going to score in the deciding
game as well two goals in two games the only two games he played in the western conference final
and he played a huge role coming back mark stone's my clutch canadian who wants to go next me because
the camera's on me me uh you know what's funny scoring in between the legs goal as a captain
and then looking genuinely shocked that you did it.
Jordan Stahl for a very important goal
in game four for Carolina
and also a genuinely funny reaction
because he was both jacked and surprised.
Didn't seem to know that he did it.
And I like that.
Yeah, yeah, I like that too.
Jesse, what about you?
This player, I think he gets double the love here
for being the clutch Canadian
because his father was actually a CFL player.
I don't know if you're aware of this,
but Taylor Hall's dad was a really good CFL-er
and competed on the Canadian bobsled team.
Wow.
Did not know that.
I knew he was a trainer.
I knew he was really in shape, but I didn't know that.
Steve Hall.
He played for the Blue Bombers, the Argos,
and the Ottawa Rough Riders.
What kind of Forrest Gump life is that?
In the mid-1980s,
after which he was a member of the Canadian national bobsled team.
Which a few people have done that from the lower body strength that a lot of football players have.
It's easy to just move them over to a bobsled.
Wow, that's crazy.
Yeah.
So wait, is that why Taylor Hall was born in Calgary but played in Ontario?
Yeah.
So they moved.
What?
So he was born in Calgary.
Well done.
Yeah.
And they moved to Kingston in 2005 where he attended high school.
Yeah, that's cool.
Anyways.
What?
He is the elder statesman on the best line in hockey
in these playoffs so far with Stankoven and Blake,
and I think he deserves some love for what a winding career he's had.
And still only 34.
Yeah, and still only 34.
All those years in Edmonton.
Yeah.
Then the Hart Trophy year.
It's crazy.
It's been a wild journey for Hall,
and it was a wild journey for his dad, apparently.
Yes, it was.
Well, all great picks, 100% clutch Canadians,
continues next week.
Now, we always do the call-out on Monday,
but I'll do it now.
If you've got suggestions, get them in all next week.
You just leave it in the comment section.

together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer
register today at pmcfwalk.ca it's uh it's been reported by pierre lebrun among other people that
the toronto maple leafs uh you can call them about the first overall pick they won't hang up the
phone uh and this is true this is true they will listen to calls so someone brought this up on the
stream last night and i was like yeah yeah yeah because i thought they were just trolling and
making it up no no it's reported he wrote it down he wrote it yesterday i didn't i didn't get it in
the show yesterday but i had the link in the prep we just didn't have time i mean it'd be stupid i
think it's stupid to not take anyone's well i was told nobody was going to call him isn't that funny
isn't that funny how they start calling huh anyway the quote is not that the maple leafs are intent
on moving the number one overall pick but new general manager john chica also hey new general
manager john shaka i your uh would like to acknowledge john shaka keep going jesse also
isn't hanging up the phone if and when teams call why would he if a team steps up in a meaningful
way with the kind of package that helps the leaf get back into contention chica will at least listen
according to league sources i do think it's unlikely he moves it though okay so hold there
we'll save the san jose sharks conversation that's next that's a lot of words for john
is not a complete dumbass yeah if he wasn't you know if he wasn't accepting calls i'd be like
you don't want to just hear them out you got to hear them out uh maddie pull that down for just
a sec um i and the reason i ask that is because it's got the shark stuff i don't want to get to
next time but well luckily i can't read uh the i can't read well okay let's i just want to ballpark
this uh-huh okay and i don't i don't know what the market value of a first overall pick is because
it's never been traded as far as i can remember unless not in the modern era we've seen second
and third overall picks like the vancouver canucks it happened with the sedins uh-huh that was a long
time ago no cap back then there was a weird one with the flurry uh pick as well but also pre-cap
again pre-cap so what kind of a package would a leaf fan be satisfied with i i got a funny one
yesterday on the stream okay give it to me because i was like yeah i wouldn't move the first overall
pick for pretty much anything and they go would you do matthew schaefer i was like uh yes yeah
but like a generational guaranteed uh no assembly required defenseman yes okay now let's come back
to reality yeah no let's let's let's try to keep it within the realm of this is yeah this could be
possible yeah the one thing i was thinking about is is uh there there are you know there's there
have been some whispers about zach rowinsky and and and and listen columbus wants to keep
zach rowinsky zach rowinsky is not indicated to anybody these like not publicly that's gonna go
but there have been people are going well it's interesting they haven't made the playoffs very
much and didn't make the playoffs again this year and he had a norris trophy year and he's got a
year left on the deal and columbus in the past has had trouble retaining you know free age the
last one that I can remember was Panarin obviously Bobrovsky left too um and I think you know if
well like Wierenski was like the attempt to change that right because remember his contract at the
time was like holy shit it's crazy like that's a lot of money for Zach Wierenski and there
Columbus is going to be willing to pay whatever he wants like you know we always talk about how
we think Cale McCarl be the first 20 million dollar man I look at the Kaprizov contract in
Minnesota and going well Minnesota needed Kaprizov more than Kaprizov needed Minnesota
It could be Wierenski's that's the first $20 million man.
Because he, if he wants to, could just say, well, you're going to have to pay me this.
And they'll be like, no.
And he'll be like, great, then you can trade me.
Right?
Like, they kind of have to do that.
Because if they can't, it's about leverage, right?
And I know McDavid could do that, but he didn't do that.
Next time, he will.
And I was also thinking about this.
And the McDavid thing ties into this.
We talk about Austin Matthews and McDavid.
There's a tier here.
mcdavid's in a higher tier there was a time where when matthews was getting close to 70 goals where
you're like well it's closer yeah what do you value more what do you value like oh this guy
can score 70 or do you want all of the skills david he's the go to the generation and then
mcdavid took an off season was like okay i'm gonna become a great goal scorer and then he put up that
60 goal season we're like oh this guy this guy's different just does what he wants hold on now hold
on hold on let me finish the point i gotta finish the point sure sure sure sure so you know everybody's
in edmonton all worried about well if we don't get it done this year then he's going to want out
well that's nice but what team is going to trade for connor mcdavid
because if you trade for connor mcdavid whatever that package is that's going to flatten your
roster because like edmonton's going to need like you you couldn't possibly trade enough futures
right you couldn't possibly it would have to be and so even parts of the roster also even if he's
demanding a trade out if i'm edmonton i'm going well you're not coming you're not leaving you're
You're not coming back anyway.
I'm going to play hardball with you then.
And you're going to play one more year.
Because I think, I think whatever Edmonton would get for him
would be so disappointing
because they couldn't possibly find fair value
that you may as well just keep Connor.
I actually think he's locked in for the next 24 months there.
I'd be shocked if he was traded.
But a guy on Matthew's level, you go,
okay, well, that's not necessarily going to flatten the roster.
but like let's say you get the panarin return which i don't think is all that crazy yeah because
chris jury sucks yeah chris jury sucks but like the context was panarin only wanted to go to a
certain i think you get the queen return and he had a full no move yeah and he left it up to that
moment sorry i'm derailing because i don't like that at all hey hey that's bit infringement he
left my job to the moment where it's like oh panarin's done and it's gone i gotta take what
i can get from la for this when you should have been proactive like the quinn hughes deal and you
get actual futures if you're trying to rebuild and that's what they got to be looking for if
they're trying to do a matthews deal which i don't know if well and we're not talking about
matthews but i'm just saying yeah so if you're talking about a guy like rowinsky i i would argue
that in contract negotiation extension territory nobody's got more nobody's got more their team
more over a barrel than zach rowinsky not one team so not one player quinn hughes even in minnesota
does not have the kind of leverage that zach rowinsky has in columbus is what you're arguing
that you would think about a first overall pip trade not if it involves that not a direct swap
not one need an extension yeah 100 need an extension it's got to be i mean this is are
we coming down the last 30 days of the eight years like when are they like oh you can sign
an eight-year deal until september 15th okay yeah so eight years zach rowinsky september content's
actually gonna be insane yeah it could be and and i think sorry to think that to be honest like if
i'm toronto and columbus fans are gonna hate this but if i was toronto i'd be like yeah that's not
it though that can't just be it but if you're columbus you're like well fuck off yes so i mean
I wonder if they build something bigger out of it.
I also don't know that that really solves all of the Leafs ills.
But what I do know is that you then have the opportunity to,
that's defense changing.
Your defense has changed forever.
And we see.
Oh, it's organization.
Yes.
You see the effect that Quinn Hughes had on Minnesota.
You go watch a Minnesota wild game from before Quinn Hughes.
They're a good team with Quinn Hughes.
They are.
Well, they're a second round and out team, but Hey,
a lot of injuries contributed to that too and they were still 100 and something points
like i think people underestimate or maybe you don't how franchise changing that could be and
so if you had something like that listen guys if if quinn hughes became available via trade and
you could trade the first overall pick for him would you do it if there was an extension quinn
hughes right now no let's say no you wouldn't trade the first overall pick for the least give
me mckenna you want mckenna actually what about warinski uh no what about macar not my car well
macar macar listen who knows what's gonna happen i would do that here wait is that on the table
we're not catering to jesse enough adam fox yeah you're right yeah i just think like if if an offer
like that comes across your desk and you're trying to win now and hey you know who's really good
buddies and is a big part of the usa program with him austin matthews uh rowinsky and matthews
same program you know that that's where i start to go well now do you regret giving up mckinnon
and mckenna in the future probably but you know the question is and again we still don't know
what they want and what they want to do uh because we have no history with this organization in terms
of this management group there's no continuation it's a brand new chapter i don't know i don't
know how they see the next three years also zach warrensky wouldn't be eligible for an extension
until next offseason oh so he's had two years left yeah he's got next year and the year that
i don't know that you make that though i don't i don't know if that's doable uh can i give you an
example of a trade that sucks ass sure give it to me sucks ass but both teams won uh i feel like i
know who it's gonna be uh joe newendike in 1995 goes to the dallas stars uh december 1995 uh he
has several good seasons there they win the stanley cup in 1999 the package to get him
was a guy named cory millen played 335 games in the nhl and uh this kid who was he was a first
round draft pick wasn't picked in the top 10 what's how do you pronounce that jeromea ginla
you gave up a hockey hall of fame player before he played his first nhl game 1554
games 81 in the playoffs 1300 points 625 goals and every dallas stars fan is like yeah but the cup
and and five years later the flames went to the cup right or five years after after the dallas
cup the flames went to the cup they were oh four right when they lost yeah but they didn't win it
so yeah but they were close like yeah you would do it the flames fans would do that trade again too
how many yeah but we were closed banners i know but you know what i'm saying no no i do yeah i do
but i you know it's but here's the problem the leafs are not the 1995 stars and you know what
what's amazing is that mckenna fills in because i know that you know i know stemberg's had a great
tournament in the world championships sorry it's just not enough to sway me uh yeah so did line
it but so did so many other great players that turned into great players i'm just saying
stenberg's not enough for me mckenna's my guy um and and i think he fits exactly what they need
they need a guy to set up austin matthews and this guy has vision and they're you know on the
high end that you've heard the comparables and it's like you yes you have to listen so i'm trying
to figure out like what would that be listen but i don't know what that would be he's gonna have a
difficult rookie season yeah like like not even in terms of performance but like in terms of
perception and small like or like thin based on like so we had that in-depth conversation with
scott wheeler which was like illuminating right so like you said this is a pretty svelte kid
um and stenberg comes in probably more nhl ready and that means likely outperforms him
uh especially if he goes to like imagine he's in san jose and he's like right celebrini or some
shit right um but mckenna's ceiling is higher yeah it's not nothing's linear right go look at
joe thornton's rookie season samson off when they uh his teammate when they called me when the
colder yeah no and thornton had like 20 points or something shitty like that then he turned into
joel thornton yeah and they traded the heart trophy winner yeah you know in his heart trophy
season in the heart trophy season yeah okay so let me uh say this so we can clip it for socials
oh no adam and steve if you were the toronto maple leafs are you trading the number one
overall pick to columbus for zach warensky and the 14th overall pick
does he have an extension he's not eligible he's not eligible but do you have a uh a written
you can't smoke signal he doesn't know he's in a position like quinn hughes and it's like we'll
wait if he had a year left i would say you gotta consider it but because it's two you can't you're
getting that risk two years of warensky though that's what you're trading for right yeah but
You're not the wild.
You're not the wild getting Quinn Hughes.
You are a team that most recently stinks,
but a lot.
What's your answer?
No,
no.
I also say no,
no,
but like,
no,
yeah,
but it's,
it's tempting.
You know,
I'd rather have McKenna.
Me too.
Yeah,
me too.
I'm excited about McKenna.
And you know,
what's nice about getting excited about young players are exciting when you're a fan,
right?
Yes.
And young,
you like look i said this on this stream and i don't know if i said it on the podcast or not but
one of the biggest compliments i can pay easton cowan is that he survived craig berube
and i'm really excited for him to play for anybody else he had another one last night in um
are you paying attention to what's going on the marlies are on a run here but it's it's not just
they're on a run they're it's it's actually kind of akin to what the habs have done they're getting
outshot a lot they got outshot like 35 15 or something stupid last night but marley's starting
goalie dennis hildeby delete delete arthur akimov is stealing the friggin show sometimes you just
need a good goalie and willie willie having a great performance and guess who got the game
winner last logan shaw with like 90 seconds to go friend of the show pizzetta michael
the high slot love that good for him he scores that goal i'm watching i'm like why there's 90
seconds left in the game why are they out there and he freaking scores good for him dude they're
having a really fun run but back to count sorry sorry sorry uh having a top six that looks
something like McKenna Matthews I don't know I don't without Domi there I don't know what that's
going to look like difficult and then because I really I mean that press release we didn't we
talked about it but like the more I think about that press release the more I'm like that's pretty
fucking serious that they put that out um and I hope he's okay but like he'll be re-evaluated
at training camp sounds like this is a long-term thing and I don't know if he's going to be back
But then you've got Nyes, Nylander, and Tavares in that top six.
So the Leafs might be shopping for another winger this summer regardless.
And, you know, I wonder, you know, the top six all of a sudden without Domi in it, you're a little bit like, ooh, how are we going to do this?
And maybe that's the Leafs being forced to do something they probably ought to be doing anyway.
is is don't be a permanent solution as a top six no but he was the guy feeding matthews when
matthews with bertuzzi was scoring the 69 goals marner was not on that line half the season at
the end of it marner was not on that line right that's so insane that that's the season he wasn't
even nominated for the heart i know crazy 70 goals um that is they're gonna have a fascinating
offseason yeah because you're right like domi does add a very interesting wrinkle to all that
and and you know i talked about vegas and how marner's not a center and he did admirably
considering how he's not a center he's on the wing and is the best player in the league apparently
which yeah i so i guess i was right um god what a misstep and like we're not doing this again
But what a misstep to not develop one of Marner or Nylander at center.
Yeah.
Because that solves everything.
Well, do you do that with McKenna?
Do you have Matthews?
Do you have Matthews, Tavares, McKenna?
Because McKenna is listed as a center.
No, he's a winger.
He's a winger.
Here's what I'm trying to do.
I'm trying to take Tavares off of center.
I'm trying to put him on third line center.
Okay.
Okay, fine.
Well, now you're shopping for a second line center.
Yeah, that's fine.
You're going to need to.
That's like $8 million.
They have the money.
Spend on hoops.
Well, nobody.
You got to trade.
Well.
Yeah.
This is the problem.
I don't think this is like in September.
We're not walking in with a complete picture.
You have to take the Carolina Hurricanes approach and be patient.
Well, we're definitely not walking in with a complete picture now.
Are they a playoff team?
Leafs?
Yeah.
based on right now i haven't i haven't the slightest clue i have no idea i haven't if
tanf's playing like what is this what changes and what is tanf let's like i don't even know
let's assume totally healthy except for domi who we have reason to believe won't be yeah uh
who's who on who's on the team like i don't even know who's on the team
you know what i mean they're good better goalie situations real crowded like which is a good
thing it is a good thing but like i was perfectly comfortable with moving off of one of solar's or
wall and having hildeby waltz in because he was so good it's not even the marley starting
goaltender right now so i don't know what to do with all that it's a good problem though yeah
great problem yep chubby's original shorts and bathing suits we took the bathing suit away from
steve because yesterday he put it on his head jesse is holding it though and and having a deep
examination why why do they say about it they actually wrote a little message to you on the
tag to whoever bought it you out there about who bought this if this tag is removed we assume you
wore these shorts and therefore they're no longer returnable because that's just nasty
because what i'm holding is lined swim trunk that's right and we assume in your line swim
trunks your little steve dangles are hanging in there whoa and i don't think chubbies wants your
Steve Dangle touch line shorts.
But if you took it, took the tag off,
which everybody does,
it means you like them. In fact, you probably
love them. And here's the thing, Steve,
you did some, your pool opened early
this year because your son desperately wanted it.
And when you jumped in with your chubby shorts.
We both did the polar plunge.
It was cold.
It was very cold.
You didn't need the lighting anymore.
But chubby shorts are fantastic.
They're great for, obviously, for swimming, but also
hold the blue ones up, please.
Hold the blue ones up.
We're still showing these off.
These are also just great shorts to wear.
This is not a bathing suit.
These are just shorts.

So all that said, interesting.
Now, two teams that are legitimately very open to moving their picks are the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks, two and four.
You imagine Wierenski on the Sharks?
Well, so this is the thing.
Number two overall pick and San Jose is absolutely loaded with forwards.
They need to build that defense.
I saw, I think it was San Jose Hockey now, I think it was, or Sharks Digest, one of the two had, you know, a lot of people have linked Morgan Riley to San Jose.
Does it make sense for them?
yeah what i saw was not that it that maybe that it didn't but to me it's like well you got to
sign ferraro and then i saw that they weren't oh i don't know that which i was pretty surprised by
that would be weird they're gonna have to well they have to build that out it's barren back
there it is like i know they got dickinson and like orlov but like oh yeah what are you gonna
do right you've got to have to me like there's two what makes the most sense to me now dougie
hamilton has already nixed a trade to to san jose he was apparently on the block last year and said
no um or at least that was the rumor anyway last year when last year summer okay so that would that
i can understand would he change his mind now and here's the thing he should it wouldn't be dougie
what if what if this simon simon nemeth chef is real what if you can take dougie's contract which
you don't care about and dougie's still good and then you can get nemich as well because they've
committed to lose both why not and then have a second overall pick why not you're taking that
nine million dollar cap at new jersey needs to get out from under and then you're taking a player
who doesn't want to be there who is a third overall pick and you're giving them a second
overall pick and you're giving them a stenberg a chase reed uh is that is that that's not here
had a note on nemich in there uh regarding oh yeah he said he wasn't he wasn't sure that that
was true and listen maybe he hasn't made the trade request but his name's been out there
his name was out there at the trade deadline link to the leafs for knives so whether or not he's
actively said trade me it doesn't mean new jersey wouldn't and i know it's different management now
i also know that oh oh boys like are we cooking with gas a little bit you know you know what i
just realized this is how we walked in the door because we're now in in silly season and it's
silly season's the best and then we've been so caught up in the playoffs now there's not enough
teams left there's only three teams standing and gosh what are we going to talk about there's no
game tonight let's trade zach warensky to half the teams in the league well let's go and jesse
you won't be surprised by this but you were correct i think a couple of years ago when you
said i think chicago got bedard too early because they've now burned three years of the elc and
there were reports yesterday that there is some difference of opinion on what he should be paid
next season between chicago and connor and my answer to that is lol you're gonna pay him what
he wants yeah and i if i remember correctly i don't think i said it in like a negative way
just in an unlucky way yeah where you're lucky and unlucky yeah you're trying to hit the right
part of your rebuild and get the guy at the right time and they were just so barren and they got
bedard and they're still not good and it's just you wish you would have got bedard like this year
it's because chicago over stripped when when toronto rebuilt we still had good veteran players
and players in their 20s on the team buffalo over stripped as well they did yeah they did
with buffalo like if you don't trade hagel you know then hagel's there you did not need to move
off of de brinkett and uh hagel hagel mccabe even dude kirby doc yeah i was there in 2022
when they picked him that was four years ago montreal we were there that happened at the
draft didn't it or right before yeah yeah and like who'd you who'd they get seventh was that
naser or kuchinsky i can i don't know naser had a good start but then he got injured this year
i like naser i think he's gonna be good but my point is so san jose it's pretty obvious they
want to add on defense so you have to look around at that what does chicago not need to add other
than goaltending and their top line center i'd say about number one center and that's it spencer
night at a good year uh-huh connor bedard is going to be re-signed it's just a question of
how much money ideally levshinov has a real good season but that's a rook or a sophomore defenseman
yeah oh uh frondell they got frondell i think they're gonna have a better season next year
but yeah you need a little bit more juice so what are you what's your number what are you
prioritizing looking i wonder if chicago trades a little bit of quantity for quality like they
got a lot of guys who i think are going to play in the nhl but are they all going to be in the
nhl next season when are you going to be sick of this i think the answer is currently i think the
answer is a year ago you know what i mean you should be sick of this by now you have your
number one center of the future you got a bunch of great you know promising young players you got a
very solid uh young starting goalie you should be happy with where you are and you're not because
you keep losing why all right you got to figure some things out there because this enough is
enough jesse if you're kyle davidson and you do get an offer that you deem acceptable what does
that offer entail um i think if i'm him i'm using that pick i don't think i don't think there's
anything worth like i think you should probably select one of the defensemen they'll fall to you
at four um there's gonna be there's like five yeah i think that'll be the best use of that asset
i don't know if there's something out there from a team that'll like because you're not looking
really to speed up the rebuild like they still gotta slowly build it together because they're
still like the guys they have are so young so like i'm not going out and doing the tyler bertuzzi
thing again and and trying to be like okay let's get all these guys and try and be competitive i
think they're still in the rebuild phase of it yeah but how do you put together a season like
san jose did this year where like he didn't make the playoffs but everyone's like oh okay
yeah that's what you're aiming for you're reputable like you're you're watchable you're
relevant in this league and not just cannon fodder yeah but i don't think they have the young talent
that san jose has that's like ready now no san jose they've got so many good young and they're
ready now and they're good guys like will smith are gonna have break like celebrating had his
breakout breakout year i mean i know he did 63 points in 70 games in his rookie year but the
breakout year was this year i think guys like will smith ecklund those guys are primed for
true breakouts like will smith if he's a point of game player smith missed time too yeah there's
and misa is going to get more ice time oh my god misa yeah he missed so much time yeah if you're
going misa celebrini ecklund smith like that's such a good little core there and they're already
pretty good nhlers yeah and and you hope all goes you want to get to that right yeah so they have a
lot of names but very few of those names they just haven't done it yet they haven't impressed
reach what you talked about with san jose okay so moving on to uh this is an interesting one
we talked about uh chris mcfarland okay we talked about the rumors about nashville being interested
and wanting to see if they could talk to him and i think those rumors are real um they haven't
obviously asked for but people were saying like oh mcfarland's gonna leave for nashville i don't
think they've spoken to him yet so if and and i if you're colorado you're like i'm not gonna grant
you permission to speak to him until whatever but if mcfarland is going to leave um i mean if
you're colorado and you're the owner of colorado you're the cronky family you're like walmart
connected you got big money hey joe thanks so much for all the hard work but do you think you'd
step aside to let chris mcfarland be the president now because the way it usually works in the nhl
unless you're Vegas, is if there's a promotion on offer,
because this is a president's role, right?
If there's a promotion on offer,
we'll let you talk to the team.
And Sackick is the head of the team.
If you're the Kroenke family,
are you comfortable with the front office you have?
You let Chris go, get a new set of eyeballs on it,
or want to promote one of your people internally?
Or do you say to Joe, hey, thank you for your time.
We still want you to be a part of the organization,
but this is going to be chris's team now this is where the nhl has to be careful oh okay
vegas has opened uh pandora's box they have yeah with uh i don't want this qualified person
to go to a divisional rival so i won't let them what if colorado does this with chris
they could easily do it they'd be within their rights to do that nashville's central
we're central uh no go away well now we're going to start having like like puckpedia is going to
turn into like coach and gmpdia because we're going to start looking at who are the free
free agent gms and coaches and by the way there's no cap for those people so if you get someone good
like if john cooper became available oh my god he'd be the biggest free agent signing of the
summer he'd be he'd be bigger than yeah pretty much like like what babs was right and i think
that's the that's where we're headed with this and just and if nashville does in fact call this
colorado turn them down interesting well and would nashville be able to pay him more than colorado
could of course they could yeah nashville nashville's loaded to the gills they got money
yeah yeah so does colorado no i think like they could easily pay him that money like the avalanche
have the money they have the money yeah yeah yeah what i mean is if you're chris how much longer do
want to work under joe because everybody that's natural it's not that you don't like joe sakic
maybe you've learned a ton from joe sakic you've done great success with joe sakic
but everybody in this position is ambitious don't you want to run your own team and run it from the
top and not answer to joe when you make a trade you take it directly to the owner so vegas or
sorry uh colorado would not be able to do to chris mcfarland what vegas did i'm not sure that they
were to give him a promotion i'm not sure that i'm not sure how that works but my understanding
was that teams have allowed it in the past although there is an example of it being blocked
and it involves the avalanche with the leafs because the avalanche called about dubas to offer
him gm yes and he was agm at that time right and so the leaf said no you're not talking to him
we're making him gm so you can block it at least you could back then and i want to say the coyotes
as well did they they i want to say it was the coyotes and the abs wanted to talk to dubas there
we go now as we know with tubas you don't necessarily need to talk you don't need to
you don't need to actually make the official phone call like the deals are done beforehand
sometimes i mean that penguins one i'm like that was in hand but no uh that was just on a whim i'm
curious he was in a silly mood that day that mcfarland thing's interesting because i think
eventually if you're chris mcfarland you probably do want to run your own team you do want to be
the guy why not and make a boatload of money yeah now here's maybe you can help with this uh
what is the structure of the preds like the of the predators because okay trots was gm
and not president question mark yeah poil is still what to that team this is where i get
confused because they've had a lot of change boils out like yeah like he might be helping
with the search but poil's not he's so damn old yeah yeah no poil's not involved in that no no
and if you're chris are you leaving colorado to work under david poil no you're working you're
going to them hey you called me here's what i want i'm running the team and i'm also running
the i'm i'm starting from the top down the admirals the predators i don't even know who
their echl squad is it them too who's their echl squad i don't toledo walleye sure i have no idea
um you're you're running the whole program and i it's my guys my people this is what we're doing
it's a five-year contract like or in do you know what if dubas got seven so can i want seven get
seven this is what i'm saying man like you've got they the preds have waited and waited and
waited the least fight and i want the bones that you found under bridgestone arena when you were
building trots trots retired i want the tiger bones then a month later the leafs fired their
gm and have hired a gm and nashville still looking so i think you've got them over a barrel if they
really want you you're gonna get everything you want tell me you wouldn't take that you're any gm
in the league you take that so you've made a very compelling argument and i go back to pandora's box
yeah curious maybe they have started acting like that too and you know what i don't blame them for
that either the team that just beat you is doing this yeah you think they might take a lesson from
that sure feels like it interesting michelle kennedy by the way is president of the nashville
predators now is that business president or hockey ops like what i mean is like is michelle running
the the business side of it or the hockey side of it the she oversees the whole thing she oversees
So she put so they don't have like a president of hockey operations role.
Michelle Kennedy is the chief operating officer.
And then she assumed the duties of title and alternate governor of the Predators as well.
OK, so that's who Chris would report to.
Yes.
That's who Barry Trotz reports.
OK, so that's Michelle.
That's their boss.
But Barry was not a traditional GM.
Right.
And if I'm Chris, I want to be not the traditional GM.
I want to be the GM.
Yeah, I want the GM.
So in this case, Michelle would have to create the role for McFarland to be president of hockey operations if he's getting that promotion.
But right now, they currently only have the general manager, and she's the president of the Preds.
Got it.
You see who's in charge of hockey operations for the Vegas Golden Knights, by the way?
Who's that?
Friend of the show got a promotion.
Tom Parashka.
Can you explain to people who the hell that is?
Because it's been a long time.
I was about to!
so before puckpedia there was cap friendly and before cap friendly there was general fanager
general fanager ran the how much does this player make against the cap world for several years
he made general fanager to teach himself how to code and like the site just was just a happy
accident that came with it and from there tom was hired by the vegas golden knights before they
ever played an nhl game he's a day one which is a hard thing to do with the vegas golden knights
and he leads their hockey operation and he's four wins away from his second cup good for tom he's
director of hockey operation yeah so yeah he works under uh the gm there kelly mccrimmon and
president george mcphee and he probably he probably can't say much to graham mcphee
Who's below him
But
Graham's got a last name
That gives him some sort of precedence
I don't know if they're related
I've never heard of that person
You don't know
You don't know if George McPhee and Graham McPhee
Are related Steve
Anyway my point is
My point is if you're going to Nashville
You're running the show
By the way Tom Parashka way back in the archives
We did a full show with him
Way way back
Director of Hockey Operations
Biggest Golden Knights
Okay I'm going to click George McPhee
Steve can we just get to the next thing
Because I'm running out of time
And I didn't even get to this last
Respectfully I don't care if you're related
Disrespectfully kiss my ass
I don't care
Who's Grant McPhee's birth dad
Okay it doesn't say on elite prospects
Which to me indicates
You're falsely accusing him
Of being a nepo baby
Jesse's going to get a call from
grant mcphee going just so you know grant i'll grant somebody else well that he's gonna does
he have another he's got a brother named grant grant and graham uh all right the first thing
when you google graham mcphee is graham mcphee's dad is george mcphee oh yeah steve goes like
through 40 windows like elite prospects but geez all right i could have just googled it
he played for uh boston college he's on the 2019 2020 team anyways sorry what were his stats
Adam, shut up.
Can we get to fucking interesting shit, please?

book your sunny getaway today at flyporter.com and actually enjoy a comedy uh anders lee and uh
brody jenner brody jenner brody jenner from uh the hills uh boone jenner both captains
both free agents uh lee's 36 anders lee is now 36 years old holy shit he's what i know
okay now he had he had the three-year contract seven million dollars he had 29 goals two years
ago 19 this past season and they are they're apparently interested in resigning him but
they're gonna wait from what what pierre lebrun says is that uh matthew darsh has told him listen
we're interested in resigning you but there's a few other things we got to do first and if you're
anders lee the question is do you wait and you are like it's the aisles are exciting and they're
younger and whatever but does anders lee make seven million dollars there does he is money
the concern i'm interested in that there's there's an unpopular unconventional path here okay so
matthew your your team is the new york matthew shafers right like you have this transformational
player yeah on your team now i don't even think the islanders knew he was this good
who how could you possibly he had one of the greatest rookie seasons by a defenseman
ever in history i rewind to our season previews where we were talking about who could end up where
i had the islanders at the bottom of the metro and the reason for that wasn't because i thought
they were a bad team you thought they were rebuilding i know i thought they were going
to rebuild ah they had so many older players good older players who either had a year or
none left on their deal and i'm like kate you might tread water letting leading up to the
trade deadline which is actually sort of what they did and you'd be fully justified in hard selling
and then obviously because you traded all your good veteran players you stink and you fall to
the bottom of the metro that was my logic what if they still did that anyway now i'm not saying
to the point where you stink but this is a not very good free agency at all what if
you made a bunch of trades with some of your vets that made sense now anders lee you said he's a ufa
mm-hmm so obviously you're not gonna be able to move them really unless you're talking about like
contract rights you're gonna get a pittance for him but i think there could be some real activity
on that team i think so too now with columbus um uh jenner 32 just uh switched his agents now he's
with pat morris and i guess according to portsy port's line from um the athletic he was saying
that the first time that they talked contract they're both pretty far apart and i think boone
jenner is actually a really interesting depth option for a lot of teams um not only is a good
leader but i think he's actually a very good player who people often ignore because columbus
is a smaller market and doesn't often get the national headlines and no he's not going to like
light up the the you know thing but that is exactly a player that if he became a ufa i would
want the leafs to target adam you do a podcast with an nhl player agent named alan wall i do
is that what does it mean when an nhl player switches agents uh like last minute before a
contract well uh usually it means that the negotiations haven't gone well and that the
player believes that the agent is not properly um in a lot of cases anyway i'm painting with
a broad brush properly representing their interests that happened with uh alan and patches
yeah that's how we got patches yes yeah because patch already didn't feel there was some sort of
deal in place with los angeles yeah and patches were like well i'm not going la and then there
was and i don't know the whole story there but all i remember the sportsnet article from it yeah
and uh and then all of a sudden he was with alan and then they traded him to vegas instead because
bergevin wanted him gone and uh which was weird because he was like the team's leading scorer
instantly becomes a captain in vegas like you know um but it's a it's a very it's it's it's
notable and remember that these guys are still paying their old agent right so if you're in the
middle of a contract you fire your agent you got three years left you're still paying your old
agent and your new agent doesn't get paid until they sign a new contract with you because you
have an agreement with that agent for a certain number of years that's right even though the new
agents representing you they're not and a lot of agents like alan is is you know very open about
the fact that he calls his players all the time and checks in on them there's a lot of agents who
don't do that and it's it's all depending on what you want out of your agent because a lot of players
don't want to hear from anybody not no call me when the contract's up i don't care right a lot
of other players are like no i want to have chats and i got i want to talk through this issue this
issue this issue and that issue and there are players who get annoyed when they call their
own agency and can't get through and that happens which is fucking crazy imagine you're making five
six million bucks and you can't get out of the hold of the guy that you're paying three or four
percent to well i talked about that with uh nick robertson uh remember like so he had the trade
requests and everything and then you look and he's represented by someone with like 80 clients
yeah well because then they would have assistant like junior agents that would
manage tranches i guess of that if that's the right way to put that but it does it looks tough
on puckpedia yeah it does it does yeah and speaking of puckpedia a lot of free agency
is going to run through pat morris who his expired contracts page it's like a who's who
of guys who are going to let's go what do we got overpaid nick felino jason dickinson erica branson
scott lawton barrett hayton is interesting cory perry logan stanley uh and there's a
there's a few other interesting names but out of the guys who i would suspect are going to get
overpaid like pretty much that entire list yeah again i think logan stanley's contract is going
to be shocking Scott Lawton's probably too and I love him uh yeah he's going to make a lot of money
you know what Scott Lawton at five and a half is going to be worth it I don't care the cap's going
up who cares five and a half is going to be nothing for your third and fourth line center
it really is like we're just not ready for that yet but it people are like oh man I would never
give that for Dickinson or Lawton I'm like that's going to be what they're worth it would be nice to
have Lawton back in Toronto if there was a reasonable number there just to see what he
could do under a better head coach so it was interesting it was reported out of LA last week
um and this is when or two weeks ago that leafs i think was dennis bernstein i think it was him
um that that negotiations had started between la and scott lotten bear uh what's that no he's a
big report he's a big la reporter uh how did the bear learn how to write i'm a bear i'm a bear no
i'm kidding um no he's a he's a monster vibes guy in the room scott lotten you want to keep this guy
on your team except for the leafs who are like no we don't want to use you for what you're good for
anyway um i had heard from somebody that scott really enjoyed his time in la and then i see
dennis's report and i'm like uh-oh and i tweeted out uh and this again leaf fans were super grumpy
at this time i said oh it looks like he's not coming back like whatever and people were like
how the fuck do you know that the fuck's wrong with you this is before we had the first overall
pick uh and then people were just mad just angry and i was like okay but anyway i had some insight
on it the fact that the contract's not done yet to me indicates like we haven't heard anything
but i think it's a good thing for leaf fans that it's not done yet and i i love your optimism i
think he would be absolutely open to coming back especially now i don't know what how what his
thoughts on true living were but i for sure and and anybody with two eyeballs can tell you
brube's not here yeah he was used improperly if you could get lotten back i think you do that
but I have a hard time believing LA is just going to give up picks for him
and then just let him go.
Whoever the next,
like,
yes,
getting Matthews on track is extraordinarily important to everything to do
with this team.
But using your bottom six,
like a competent NHL team,
I think is going to be really important,
dude.
It's just a laundry list of guys who came in,
sucked left and were awesome.
Well,
and like for some of them,
it was,
were awesome came here sucked then left were awesome again and like like the example i keep
bringing up is connor doer and like i know like at the end of the day there's a ceiling on what
connor doer can provide you but when they got him from minnesota i was like this is actually a great
trade like look at this kid he's young he's an rfa he's got 10 goals came here didn't score a goal
for like 50 games left scored i think his first game in pittsburgh i was like and had did he have
like 30 points this year or something it was annoying yeah uh another guy is interesting
uh and again because it's silly season so let's go around the league couple more names these are
veteran names john carlson ducks now john did say he would be open to resigning in anaheim but it
obviously hasn't happened yet the extent so john when he was traded it was shocking to him because
in march the capitals had been discussing a two-year extension worth how much money do you
thing jesse have you seen this number i don't know the exact number okay give me a guess what's
right shot 36 37 year old john carlson worth about the per year i'm gonna say six million
oh buddy i'm gonna say nine you nailed it whoa two years wait which one of us two years you did
hey scott jess steve steve steve two-year nine million dollar contract
and i think wow i think if you're the ducks you just pay it
yeah it's not like they're hard at the cap are they yeah and and then it then it creates some
internal competition minchikov after the trade request has had a great year hellison look good
at moments but i don't think he's ready i think if you lose carlson you might be actually taking
a step back and you gave up a decent chunk to get him you did i feel like you just pay the man and
do it but this is i want people to readjust what you think people are going to make john carlson
five years ago at 37 38 years old would not be getting a two-year extension forget the money
so right like it just wouldn't happen except for dallas did pavelski and that was it right
so jesse like it like let's talk through your number so your number went down because of age
yes right yeah so there's that's perfectly sound logic the cap going up has broken through that
filter you know what i mean you always had to go okay the cap is going up by a little bit but he's
getting older so you probably take it down like a little bit but not all that much it's going up by
so much that it's like no he's still getting a race yeah you're kind of you're getting the same
level plus a little bump you know it helps that his game hasn't fallen off like a cliff as well
like he's a good defenseman in this league that's what i was gonna say like he's still when he went
to anaheim i was like this is a great trade he's still very useful he i don't know he sort of went
under the radar for me and that trade happened i went what and i looked at his stats i went holy
shit yeah because i had no idea he was gonna be available like that yeah i had no idea the ducks
like it was a good trade it sounds like he probably wasn't available and then pat for
big said but we'll give you this yeah and the calves were like okay and they realized that
they weren't gonna pay whatever he wanted right yeah or maybe they were like maybe we'll take a
stab at re-signing him this offseason that too yeah right well let him go take the first round
pick and then do it it was one or two first rounders whoa it was the one i think it was
first and two sounds rich yes two does sound rich it'd be nuts uh other names to be re-signed
obviously we've got you know robertson uh jason robertson uh and nick right yeah and nick zach
benson trevor zegras uh dorf uh yeah dorfayev um edmondson fantilli celebrini there's some crazy
names out there uh and another one that's out there who's the exact opposite of all those guys
cory perry 41 and apparently not on the cards to return to tampa now before leaf fans get all
giddy he's slow they're slow no fit there but where why would he come why can't he come to the
least he's too slow man we're already slow okay park him in front let it be a worm i mean listen
they should have signed him a few years ago yeah i want to go to the cup final yeah getting cory
perry guarantees that but he's lost his powers jesse he's out they didn't get past montreal
his power they lost them maybe they'll come back like space jam you know what no cory perry monster
jesse monster oh yeah you guys are out cory perry not a leaf no hey listen hey no no no here wait
Adam, you forget about the Daniel Winnick's and the Roman Polak's of our past.
What if you get Corey Perry and if he doesn't pan out, you still trade him for like a second because he's Corey Perry.
Then he always goes for like a good.
He does always go for that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I had a pretty decent season.
I wonder about a return to Edmonton.
He worked where he worked there.
If you're saying he's slow, then he's not going to work.
It doesn't have a problem with speed.
We do.
Right.
What I'm saying is don't be slow.
Don't add slow because we're already slow.
Edmonton can add slow.
There's room for slower players.
Totally.
What if you just double, triple, quadruple down on just slow, heavy, annoying fourth line Minnesota?
Oh, you don't need.
The Folinos and Sturm, you don't need to do.
Don't mess with that.
The Folinos and Perry, just the creaky joints line.
Well, who would be center?
What's the average age of that line?
40?
well because yeah because what is it marcus felino's the youngest and he's 34 and nick's 38
38 yeah and then 41 i'm chirping these men i am the same age or older than except for perry yeah
so we're talking about like 37 38 average age of that line man ah ah i'm telling you that's that's
a team that to me would make sense at the imagine them up against a guy like celebrini just a young
kid who's got legs oh well that's the coach's job so get off yeah hey should should perry make it
the full california tour and do san jose then he'll have played for all three teams san jose
would be interesting yeah because they tend to like an old guy like they brought doing the ryan
reeves trade yeah you know the most dastardly bastardly place he could sign is florida oh that
makes a lot of sense he's already oh i hate that and they wouldn't even need to play him the first
three months of the year dastardly bastard he'd fit perfectly there you're right i can't believe
it hasn't already happened oh i hate you steve i do too oh man okay uh last thing uh macklin and
sydney crosby doing really well at the world championships together what's the score what's
the score uh it's two nothing right now okay and there is a clip that i don't want against us
shut them out uh there is a clip floating around that we haven't seen yet that we can't play but
it's a ref cam and matthew kachuk gets called out by the uh the referee okay uh for diving
and he goes matthew matthew you're better than this i don't like he is not better than that i'd
like to know that ref's name because we can identify that person as someone who does not get
it no they're friends steve they're friends they're all but matthew you told me specifically
at poker in the summer that this wouldn't happen you know what's a sentence that in
any context should not be used matthew kachuk you're better than this
i'm sorry what's the matter with it i don't want someone with judgment that poor to be
reffing games what are you talking about that's his barbecue buddy that's a you bring in the
hot dogs or the hamburgers maddie oh matt what the matthew kachuk you're better than this
yep sir no he's not sir can i help you you need assistance what the hell are you talking about
uh worth mentioning cj's trade board episode went up today and yes it does include a couple of draft
