Starting point is 00:02:07 we get into the whole segment here um about his lfr which was a one taker and an early one taker at that what uh what happened there oh we were just talking about how you got the wrong euro checks on uh on columbus the wrong alan walsh client you messed up adam and uh david adam is on the blues david euro check is the one on columbus and then you also gave veronkov a shout out like he's a good player you're like he's a good player you know it really helped uh the blue jackets beat the leafs uh but he didn't play i believe he's still on ir they have a lot of russian guys and i was sleepy and i i'm sorry that's funny listen the leafs had a terrible performance i had a terrible performance we're all freaking terrible by the doll and then schooled it
Starting point is 00:02:57 For being a piece of shit. Tell them. Tell them you're not good enough. Why don't you fact check? You human garbage. If you want the Steve Dangle U2's doll, the link is in the description. Also, and we have not given this enough love
Starting point is 00:03:15 because somebody's book just keeps taking up all the oxygen. And somebody's doll just keeps taking up all the oxygen. We're going to be in Steve Dangle's former hometown. to see the Oshawa Generals of Peterborough Peets this weekend. And it's going to be the game on Saturday night
Starting point is 00:03:30 and then we're doing a show right afterwards. Tickets are $40. It's going to be a blast and the great thing is we're seating all the SDP people together. So if you are an SDPN fan
Starting point is 00:03:38 and you buy a ticket, you will be seated in the section with all of us. The Jennys, they're talking to us and they're like, hey, we got a t-shirt toss going but we don't have enough t-shirts.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Can you bring some SDPN t-shirts? So during the t-shirt toss, we're going to hopefully have sdpn t-shirts man imagine there's gonna be some like 60 year old nana who's like what the hell is sdpn i think we're gonna throw them to our section ah i see they serve things with like mustard and barbecue sauce at that arena i'm sure she could use it to wipe her face oh my gosh sure that'd be fine come see the oshawa generals and they're great players both eurochecks veronkov who else
Starting point is 00:04:19 Pavel Svitov Eric Branson will be there Cale McCarr David Faborni I'm trying to think of other Blue Jackets legends I was just naming people Scott Harrington Espen Knudsen
Starting point is 00:04:33 anyway let's move on generals Peterborough Peets SDPN night at the Oshawa Generals now rick nash i said i said that i hate jeff carter doing this after a game like that i woke up this morning like fuck fuck because the let's just we have to talk about both games and both games matter because they are both sides of the same coin and the coin is the toronto maple
Starting point is 00:05:05 leaves you have everything that the toronto maple leaves can do and everything they cannot and it's And what it really is, what the cannot is, is consistency. This team, for years, has done things like we've seen in the last 48 hours. And the issue has always been, well, it's 82 games. That's so many games! Time to figure that out. And season after season after season, well, if you take the game on aggregate, oh, I'm not going to worry too much or whatever.
Starting point is 00:05:38 And I get it. It's game seven. But we do have game seven, literally. uh we do have oh that's why they lost some history here oh there you go right uh you do have some history here of a team that does this and it smells a little bit to me like i think it was game 10 last year versus boston where marshan sort of clowned the team and bertuzzi's laughing on the bench and whatever no there was a distinct turn after that uh the difference i think is boston was a team that always clowns the leafs and it cemented them in their place of good not
Starting point is 00:06:19 great you know what i mean you take on a team like that it's a measuring stick game you lose once again good not great you're you're better than this team this team this team and not this one you're not in that class this didn't feel like a measuring stick game no this wasn't a measuring stick game this wasn't of course of course and it was just too perfect because adam half an hour 45 minutes after the tampa win who did you get a call from i got a call from you and what was i what was i saying you were jacked you're excited i was you said i don't know what to say you're also saying you were exhausted yeah that's the need i was exhausted and i i tried to hype myself up i was like doing jumping jacks and listening to diss tracks and just trying to get
Starting point is 00:07:06 myself fired up and i had to talk to my friend adam wilde and he's like you know what channel this burn the house down go nuts and so i did and i talked about cherishing every win as it comes to you and they won tonight and who knows what's gonna happen tomorrow night but all we have is tonight hooray you won you beat the tampa bay lightning fuck those guys and tomorrow who gives a damn you got the two points tonight and then what did they do they leafed it up they leafed it up same old team there they are so so we welcome back boys great to see you again so we start with guys uh the least put dennis hill to be in net and dennis hill to be was really really good in his other game uh with the toronto maple leafs this season this was not his best game
Starting point is 00:07:58 uh he was bad he was bad team in front of him was bad he was bad but i i put hill to be first because i think it's important to say goalie wasn't great but that was the least of the problems yep i mean it's not like he didn't exactly give them a chance to win i will say that um but man this team uh what what do we have now we have four wins three losses to look at man this team can't score when they're bad not yet we haven't seen it yet like i guess it's i think they haven't had a barn burner game honestly i don't i think this is the first bad loss of the season it is it is and i suppose that's good it took them seven games lots of teams in this league have gotten their ass kicked lots of good teams already this season did florida end up winning last night
Starting point is 00:08:52 they were getting tuned by minnesota i can have a look right now i i it's impossible with no they lost they lost there you go so it's um you know the leafs are not unique in this regard they're unique in that we could see this coming from space fun fact about minnesota they have not trailed yet this season are you kidding they have lost two games in overtime but they have not trailed in regulation or over wow at any point this entire season so far that's actually ridiculous yeah it's i think it's i think it's uh the six games is a record for consecutive games like a like a franchise record a league record that's i gotta i gotta check i gotta check if it's franchise or league but i that's spectacular it's incredible they've been the hottest team
Starting point is 00:09:38 they're going very underrated other than calgary other than uh winnipeg i should say yeah winnipeg winnipeg's probably one on hotness yeah minnesota's probably two this is uh this is one of the weirdest starts to a season we've seen league-wide in a while there's good teams playing like garbage there's garbage teams who are just way overachieving you do got to give columbus props they uh uh Tarasov hey I got a name right um it was very good um I didn't have the Leafs getting completely sunned by Justin Danforth on my bingo card that was depressing um they did well and it's not just that expectations were low heading into the season obviously they suffered a terrible tragedy but they also have a ton of injuries on their team so they're way thinner
Starting point is 00:10:31 than they even should be they shouldn't be in the playoff conversation fully healthy yep um so to completely get your ass kicked by this team it's a back-to-back ugh yuck i don't give a shit you're you're the leafs you always play lots of you always play like 12 of them a year so that's just 24 points in the garbage then oh i don't think i i don't think i didn't see a lot of excuse making about this on on you know on the relevant uh media channels social media channels i don't see a lot of people saying that i really don't no i think a lot of people said wow that really sucked and i think you saw people going well i thought second half of back to back no i didn't see that no no but they're trying to find an excuse they're not giving it to them they're
Starting point is 00:11:19 like well maybe oh no it was it was they look terrible mitch so mitch marner said you know you know they said what are you going to do with a game like this and he said flush it down the toilet and i think if you're a pro athlete you need to do that you need to be short memory when was that opening face you need to move on listen uh he matthews um nice and riley were all dash three last night crazy that's and they matthews hadn't been on the ice for a five on five goal until that game and then he was on for three yeah wow it's rough and i and i think i think there there is i don't know if it's a mentality thing but i think we can all finally sort of admit now that this is a team that has taken shifts off taking periods off taking nights off
Starting point is 00:12:02 last night it was a night off i want to i want to say that i thought that if if anybody looked okay last night and the numbers back it up was john tavaris um he apparently was the more most effective by the numbers uh and that's good the guy lost eight pounds last week because of this sickness jeez so if you're wondering why john tavaris is bad like we did a whole segment on it i was like chris chris johnson said that i was like oh okay so this guy's sick uh this guy was really sick literally okay eight pounds yeah that's rough dude it's rough he doesn't exactly have eight pounds to lose no exactly so i'm thinking i give him a bit of a pass um i also like i i get being upset and i was upset watching this game but i also look at this as we will be
Starting point is 00:12:50 more upset about this game if the trend continues against st louis well this is the funny thing right so i i i look at it as a they wanted it so much more than tampa they outworked tampa they kicked tampa's ass it was awesome and then it's it's like they never boarded the plane and you can't do that the next two games because you have berube's first game against the team that fired him and the team that eliminated you jesse you're at the game monday uh monday night vibes after the game in the in the in the press i bet they're immaculate immaculate you know the vibes are good because we were scrumming with i think it was nice who was out there at the time and like mitch comes by because he's not going to talk to anybody he's talking about he's swinging
Starting point is 00:13:41 by he's like singing a tune i forget what song he doesn't he doesn't talk right he talked after last night which was good to see it was him uh jt and austin you know you get the the well if you're wearing an a you have to talk yeah you get that but like the vibes were immaculate you know they're all they're all dancing they're all having a good time after that game and they were rushing out of the building because they had to be out of there by like 10 30 to go make their plane and all that stuff so it was big hey everybody get get on the road and go do the next thing so it was it was great from the locker room perspective like i don't remember a start to the season for toronto where like six games in you say all six games they played well they i agree they're in every
Starting point is 00:14:21 game they're competitive and at that end of that six games you saw it on the pre-game too last night where at the before the game they're sitting there uh the tsn panel and they're like we've never had such a positive pre-game before because we're at this point this is the seventh game and there's nothing really to complain about no you know there's nothing like what do you point to that says like oh toronto's gotta fix this there's no discussion there and everything was great and then they completely reversed it by the end of that first period well i think sometimes these games and and i think you know obviously we're all leaf fans so you're gonna get pissed off watching a game like that and i think that's i like that uh i i think that anybody who's online
Starting point is 00:15:00 today going well you shouldn't be mad well listen man i'm a fan and i'm gonna i'm gonna be happy when they win it's that when they lose dude wrong place yeah yeah wrong place wrong number are you lost yeah so show up in a tim hortons you shouldn't be drinking coffee yeah i i don't this is this is where fans hang out go be a narc somewhere else yeah so that's true i don't think anybody should be surprised that this happened i'm just surprised that it took it was it happened so early with the new coach and how everything was going i didn't expect because they're not going to be good every single night no i didn't expect on october what was it october 22nd that this would happen that game seven we get the oh my god they're not even trying type of performance i thought we'd get this
Starting point is 00:15:42 a month or a couple months in you know like it'd be late november or something because that's going to happen so i'm shocked that we're at this point and we have this performance but the important thing here is how they rebound on thursday like adam you mentioned it i think they have the right mentality that okay now it doesn't matter anymore you have to have that mentality as a professional athlete when things go wrong you have to forget about it and move on and now we got to see is it truly different from Sheldon Keefe to Craig Berube is it is he gonna get them back on the horse for a consistent long period of time now and we shouldn't back to be having this type of game this type of conversation for a long stretch here of the season we got to go dozens of games here before
Starting point is 00:16:23 we see something like this again i know it's october hockey but in 24 hours we got this team's october ceiling and their floor yeah and that floor's got to come up so now we need a long run a stretch of hockey where it's like you know you're in you're in this game you're trying yep not you're not letting columbus just go through the neutral zone get to the net whenever they want the entire game you're you're trying every you can lose rangers loss yep yeah hey hey great loss that you're montreal i didn't even hate montreal even better loss you're you're nitpicking right like like with the rangers i'm like okay you lost well it was i think it was four one but yeah it was really it was two one it was a two one game and you're like okay you only scored
Starting point is 00:17:06 one on igor he was really good if you could have had a better game here's how you would have done it go to the net next game you actually do that but yeah like it's if if any game you lose you're going to have things where you could have done better this was just unwatchable exactly that's unacceptable and you can't have that type of performance again and if berube is the better coach here and he's able to get something else out of this team they won't have it so now it's like let's see this thing actually in action so i've i i wanted to i wanted to say this like it on balance here game eight is going to be uh st louis and that's 10 of the season already that's such a high percent of the season it's not but if you have a good game in st louis
Starting point is 00:17:52 right if you have a good game let's say maybe even win and you should that's nuts um you need to you need to be beating teams like st louis not that they're not a good team but you need to be beating them um i would say for 10 of the season for for that to be that the first 10 i'm really good with that i remember when what was it the penguins rolled into town without gino and sydney a couple years ago and evan rodriguez at the game of his life in toronto and just killed them and people were like oh you're being too hard on the leaves too early it's like no this is a problem i want to say that was before the david airs game i know it wasn't it was after no no no it wasn't the no no no it wasn't maybe it was it was in my basement it was in my basement okay the reason i
Starting point is 00:18:34 brought that up so in the i have a whole chapter dedicated to it's called leaf's lament you might be surprised to find out that's the longest chapter but i was talking about the games leading up to airs the game before that was a four nothing win against pittsburgh they killed them but i want to say they lost back to back five two one to pittsburgh and i think they were injured and one to buffalo no i'm talking about a seven two to pittsburgh yeah and and you said people were people got on us because they're like you're you're on them too early let them play we're like dude first line bless you you said first line center evan rodriguez you let them beat up listen you're getting into heaven first that you're being too hard on the the leafs bless you
Starting point is 00:19:18 in the year of our lord 2024 bless you so can i just truly the best among us i i don't know how you do it can i just say that if if this is how the first eight games look i think you made a really good point thank you we've seen stuff out of this team in the first eight games first seven games because we haven't seen the eighth that we have not seen that we've been begging for absolutely going to the net shooting more a shot from the point on the power play unit hey look they actually changed someone out of the power play unit for first time in half a decade all this stuff is great if if but you make a good point about the low the worst and and and this is any sort of performance based career you want to have on your worst days you want to have
Starting point is 00:20:05 a better worst than the next person's best you gotta have a high floor a high floor and we saw that this team now Hildeby didn't help no but they didn't help Hildeby either no they did not and I I look at this and I go that's a bad floor so there's something to work on the TSN panel not much to complain about I can't believe nobody knocked on wood I was like are you guys crazy are you out of your mind um you need to now go on our worst nights we still need to win or we still or we lose three two right columbus getting you can't you can't have columbus going up five nothing on you for the second season in a row by the way yeah it happened before stop columbus has been a bit of a weird bugaboo for the leaves it's horrible um so the the game you're thinking about
Starting point is 00:20:50 adam is the uh 7-1 loss that the leafs had to the pittsburgh penguins on october 23rd which is today in 2021 yeah there you go we were i remember you came in on the monday and and and you know there was like a whole bunch of back then there was a whole bunch of uh there was like a few accounts that were like oh this is the leafs year and how dare you say otherwise and we were like we're not saying that we're not fans here but there's some real issues some glaring issues with this team That was the game where Drew O'Connor scored twice, and everybody was out of the lineup. The Penguins were playing without five of their best players,
Starting point is 00:21:29 including Crosby, Malkin, Chris Letang. Crosby, Malkin. We don't need to re-litigate it. Rodriguez scored his third goal. Jason Zucker and Brian Boyle also had goals. Yeah, they got shit kicked. This is what I'm saying. It's this game.
Starting point is 00:21:46 It's the Anaheim game from a couple years ago, where they go to the West Coast and they get completely dumped by the Ducks and you come back on, you're screaming. Also early. All of these games are early. I believe that was early November. And we were like, this is unacceptable.
Starting point is 00:22:02 And you're coming on screaming. Drew O'Connor, by the way. They say, yeah, that's unacceptable. And then they lose in the playoffs. And you're like, look at these losses. Drew O'Connor, by the way, 27 career goals. This was the 2021-22 season. How many goals did he have that season in 22 games, Jesse?
Starting point is 00:22:18 he had two goals that night it was six three oh my god how many games were in that 21 season because it wasn't 56 yeah it wasn't it was the covet after no no no that's 21 22 yeah 21 22 was full it was full okay yeah so but in the end i'm like i i'm trying to take this all on balance like okay so now we know what we need to work on and i think what we can't lose in this is a game to columbus true oh sorry we can't lose the performance that they had against tampa yeah and i know to me that's the best 60 minutes of hockey i've ever seen the matthews era team play it's the happiest i've seen this fan base that was in quite some time because not only was it a good win and this is something that that we talked about during that evan rodriguez season i said you know hockey's
Starting point is 00:23:11 also an entertainment product and that team was not a fun team to watch there were we had conversations and multiple people were having conversations of this is a hard team to get behind they're not a likable group a lot of the same guys are still here but what they're doing is they're playing likable hockey and likable hockey often wins you games because it's hits it's going to the net it's heroic plays it's crazy saves general give a shitness yes i think this is the most likable team we've seen in a long time in terms of how they play the way Toronto wants a team to play is the way that Craig Berube wants a team to play that's clear so we've seen in that Tampa game from from minute one Domi went in the face off going right in to the Tampa zone
Starting point is 00:23:59 and I think Tampa had in the first three minutes and Jesse you can correct me if I'm wrong here from what I can remember the Leafs the Leafs put three shifts on the ice Tampa got it in into the leafs defensive zone a couple of times in that first three minutes and it was immediately back out and on it's three minutes of essentially five on five power play time for the leafs to start the game against tampa did not show up they didn't but i at least ran them out of the they were not allowed to show up no no this team is really good and i would think about that is on aggregate the leafs are like net zero like because now we have more context for how the season plays out and the next night is the complete opposite of that performance so i can't be like ah tampa's awesome
Starting point is 00:24:39 when i know the next night is complete opposite i see i feel like the aggregates kind of hey now we got to move forward from where we were i i i don't i don't see it as a net zero i see it as a definite oh that sucks uh but i also see it as a you need a team sometimes to have a game like this to be to to remind themselves oh you're not fucking jesus you're not walking on water wow you guys are not perfect you got to work and you got to work every night because you said it on the LFR last night it's the NHL and there are no easy nights there are no easy nights what if they didn't have that game what if this game didn't happen on Tuesday and instead it happened later in the season was not as bad and it didn't come off of that performance that's where I'm
Starting point is 00:25:22 disappointed I think you're right I can't I can't dispute that and I think we are that was a disappointing effort but I do think okay now you've given them something to focus sometimes you lose you win more sorry you learn more from your losses and what i hope they learn from this is that you're they're not infallible they had a great six games to start the year game seven stunk game eight better be good i learned how good anthony stolers was and he didn't play a minute man he's good like like i wonder how much of their hot start well hot ish four and two heading into the columbus game how much of that is just anthony stolers being a well above league average goalie yep you know the best goalie based on uh goal saved uh expectation he's been number one in the
Starting point is 00:26:09 season god i love him that's been great stuff uh the joseph wall stuff is very sketchy um it looked it looked like he was kind of trending towards playing on tuesday and then all of that got nixed so it's still a just day by day thing i almost wonder and this is full conspiracy theory if they looked like shit like throughout the day and they're like we can't do this to joseph sorry kid you're going in like we can't risk this being wool's first game back uh have fun what and they just throw hill to be right to the wolves all right wool i believe is from st louis that could be his first game i don't know if they're making decisions based on that in toronto you know i feel like oh i thought it was oh you're right i got no they're back home i got
Starting point is 00:26:57 offered tickets and i can't go yeah no that's we were talking about the weird wonky schedule where it's you play tampa you fly out uh tuesday or monday night to columbus you play columbus you fly out today you come back home to toronto and then you're back in it's a bizarre and then on saturday you're in boston yeah yeah you fly so you come home for the one game i guess so it's very on this is why i didn't want to hear any of the well maybe they're tired no i'm like cool this is game two of four games in six nights so you better get untired real fucking quick yeah it's the nhl your schedule is not much different than anyone else's i don't i have no sympathy they've also had the last week to prep for this because they had so much time off last week where you had the
Starting point is 00:27:43 four games four days off and then the saturday game then uh day off and then you got tampa so you had all this time to you know what's you know what's coming you know what's coming here so there's really there's no excuse i think um i think you know looking ahead to st louis you know one of the things that i think has has plagued the leafs and i think part of this starts from the guy that had them when they were young which is mike babcock um is mike did weird things and the thing that always sticks out to me in my mind is you didn't put your starter in when Tavares returned to the island.
Starting point is 00:28:20 It's such an underrated blemish. It is, and I think that a game like that, that game was like a WWE feature, like pay-per-view, 50,000 people in that arena. That's what the Islanders fans made it sound like. It was crazy. And for Mike to put, who was it, Garrett Sparks? It was Garrett Sparks.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Yeah, that's Mike Babcock being an asshole. and mike babcock is an asshole and that's there have been multiple reports about mike babcock being an asshole and not only was he an asshole in that moment if you're an asshole you better be a good coach that's a bad coach and what he did and i and i think the players need to take some blame here on on on what's happened since but you had a really young impressionable team that team was like you can remember matthews and marner were like 21 22 right oh even younger oh the Tavares one yeah they were around and and so he puts fucking Garrett Sparks in just and it's like and it's like yeah no it'll be fine that game was close until about halfway through and
Starting point is 00:29:21 yeah the fans took over and my point in that is that there were times when Mike did things like that where he intentionally was like I'm gonna I'm gonna fuck this team my own team he literally yeah yeah like as close to point shaving as you can come totally i don't even think he was trying to fuck over the team as so much as like individual people yes you know i feel like he had a yeah kyle against his boss yeah he was trying to um okay i'm gonna put nick patan in positions to fail see told you well nick patan also got him fired which is nice yeah good i'm glad but i but i think i think in big moments like that when you're young they leave an impression i don't think that the i i honestly believe this tell me go back and watch the replay of that game tell me
Starting point is 00:30:08 that that wouldn't have made a mark on you because it would have made a mark on me and i look at but and i think in big moments i think in big moments and the sheldon came in we always talk about the sheldon was like hey guys you know we can do this and the team responded um and and then it was the covid year and blah blah blah all that is to say this leafs team has had some scars they've had some hold on just boy babcock was a long time ago no no but but the core guys are still there steve yeah and so now it's going to be about and you said i'm trying to help your point on the lfr here oh okay we'll do it which is which is what are you waiting for ruby's job is to beat the identity of the toronto maple leafs out of the toronto maple leafs and i think the identity was formed by
Starting point is 00:30:53 a real miscalculation in bringing mad mike babcock into a you know it seemed like amazing at the time but in retrospect this guy was playing mental warfare as a 40 you know 55 year old man on like a 19 year old mitch marner what a fucking stupid guy to have running your team and i think discussion to have with a lot of blue jackets fans listening oh i'm sure that yeah listen blue jacks fans they dodged trying to big dog a young player for no good reason hmm hmm interesting so i look at this And I go, okay, you know, you've lost a bunch of game sevens and a game five to Columbus. You've, you've had these, you faltered in big moments and this isn't a big moment. It's game eight.
Starting point is 00:31:34 No, but it is a big moment for Craig and they have responded to Craig. The blues game. Yeah. Sorry. They, they've responded to Craig. They've, they've taken his and, and, and, and Matthew said last night in the post game. Yeah. It's going to be a big game for chief.
Starting point is 00:31:48 We want to bring our best. I will be very interested to see. Can I bring up, just to circle back on the Babcock stuff? Sure. Because Kadri's book came out, and he wrote about the Mitch Marner incident, about how Babcock made Mitch rank all the guys and everything in the locker room, and how that storm. And in his book, CBC had the quotes from it.
Starting point is 00:32:12 Nazem Kadri wrote, he tried to defend what he'd done. They ran into the locker room, and they talked to him. Him and Bozak ran into the Babcock's locker room, and they talked to Babcock. and Nazem Khadri said he tried to defend what he'd done to explain the thought process behind the exercise there wasn't much he could say and in the end I think he realized he's made a mistake after that he apologized to Mitch we pretty much made him you just don't do that to a rookie but the key point after that is that Nazem Khadri wrote the whole point was to embarrass guys and it made for some awkward conversations between the players and the trading staff once you break
Starting point is 00:32:46 that trust it's hard to come back here's a former player writing in in pen in paper printing it in text babcock tried to embarrass his own employees his own players just blatantly it's a terrible thing that he would do time and time again as head coach of any nhl imagine imagine you know we run a business right imagine we maddie you're how old are you 24 24 imagine maddie's five years younger than she is now and i'm and i'm gonna like you know what i'm gonna do today to get the best out of maddie fucking embarrass her in front of every everybody on staff you know what that's insane i know we're trying to sell the cj show let's intentionally make it look like shit to everybody for reasons and like and so but what was wrong with that i think that when you talk
Starting point is 00:33:35 about mentality i really do bring it back to your formative years and i see the leafs breaking out of that finally that's the part that i'm excited about the tampa game for me was like oh wow this is new era new leaf and i know everybody's like well look at the columbus game yes there are gonna sometimes you gotta when you're stepping forward you do take a step back and then you step forward some more i'm a big believer in this group it's the best hockey except outside of last night that i've ever ever ever ever seen them play in the matthews era ever there's no such thing as fat and happy in in the nh no you can't be right uh i think the confidence they gained from their win over tampa was earned and maybe they got a little too high um like it's gonna happen it
Starting point is 00:34:21 might as well happen now um and it better not happen again yeah okay now i i did want to mention um i did want to bring up this thing because i thought it was funny and it's a fun way to end the leaf segment here because um tampa did what tampa does uh and they did it keith called it out when most underrated shitbirds in the absolutely oh my god the the they you know they get embarrassed so you send the fourth line out there to run a goalie and make the leafs take some penalties and you know domi had to you know had to rearrange gergensen's face and did have to take a penalty and whatever the refs had you think the leafs night was bad in columbus the refs had a terrible night
Starting point is 00:35:03 Monday night against Tampa Leafs. Adam, you ever been fishing? Yeah, it's a few times. You ever caught a fish and gone, is this, have I caught this one before? That's Max Domi. Yeah. Teams just go,
Starting point is 00:35:17 and they reel them in. And then next period, you're like, oh, I caught the same one. I can tell. I thought it was interesting that the end of the game, so they did that in midway through, I think the second period
Starting point is 00:35:29 and got the penalty. And then Bobby McMahon got the penalty for taking off his helmet. I'm like, you guys, you guys are having a full two minute five on three. Yeah. And it was amazing because it gave the Leafs much so much more momentum. But this screenshot right here at the end of the game, John Tavares and Mike Yacimon. I have been watching hockey for such a long time. I've never seen.
Starting point is 00:35:51 I've never seen this. He's got him in like the Bob Backlund crossback chicken wing. That's it. But it's like inverted. Yeah. Yeah. It looks like AI. it does and then you get patch ready just yeah you're so right it yeah it's like ai doesn't know
Starting point is 00:36:06 how many limbs you have and it gave aismont three arms or maybe just one yeah i but definitely not two what the frig is going on in this i don't even know how to describe it for the listeners so mikey aismont is bent over looking to his right he looks like the mcdonald's arches yeah Yeah, like he is like a cresting moon. And then John Tavares has got his left arm over Ace Amant's right arm. And somehow John Tavares' right arm is under Ace Amant's neck
Starting point is 00:36:38 and giving him like a noogie. That probably sucks a lot more than getting punched. Oh, I can't imagine that felt good. And stinky, you're getting the full palm of Tavares' stinky left glove right in your frigging fotch. Ugh. Sometimes life throws you curveballs

So last week, we talked a little bit about the Halton Women's Place Walk to End Violence. I want to take a second and talk about it again. And these are some stats I didn't include in the last read because they are jarring.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Since 2018, the number of women killed each year in Ontario has gone up by 68%. In 2023, 62 women have been killed by an intimate partner in Ontario. That totals more than one person a week. Intimate partner violence was declared an epidemic in 2023 by 93 municipalities across Canada, including Halton. The federal government has also declared IPV an epidemic. and uh the uh halton's women's place is the only domestic violent shelter in halton region wow and so this is a really important event to be a part of wow um uh they used to i got a stat for you number of steve dangles willing to drive to halton zero zero because you won't go across
Starting point is 00:39:33 that young i will go to halton uh this used to be called the uh hope in high heels and it was centered around men and boys pledging their support to end violence against women and be a part of the solution um you know this is now uh this is now obviously the place walked to end domestic violence and the whole point here is is obvious i think he's really embarrassed of it and i do love that you broke the tension with a sneeze steve i'm sure that they'll forgive you uh when this inevitably goes to air no that's staying in that's staying no that's staying in i'm sorry i do want to say this hope in every step listen saturday november 2nd 2024 check-in is at 10 a.m walk is at 11 a.m at
Starting point is 00:40:17 burlington city hall 40 for adults 20 for youth five dollars off per person if you register as a team this includes a catered lunch toque and access to booths and activities and obviously it goes to support uh the halton's women's place uh to end domestic violence so uh please check it out um if you want to support them go to just giving.com slash campaign slash slash h i e s 24 again or click the link in the description oh there's that yeah yeah there's that or i could just keep repeating it one more time ttps semicolon it's not a semicolon it's colon is it colon oh okay oh i'm sorry did i interrupt your sneeze for that backslash backslash anyway listen it's in the thing so check it out it's for an amazing center and it's an amazing event on monday
Starting point is 00:41:06 night adam streamed the game he does a little watch along on our youtube channel every single monday night for the amazon games this was the first toronto maple leafs game and i believe next week you're getting another leaf yeah i get leafs winnipeg um what did you think of the broadcast well so it was very interesting watching leafs nation react to the broadcast because i saw the first right most people didn't and i kept saying there were things that i kept saying on the show they're gonna do this they're gonna do this they're gonna do this they're gonna do this and people were like wow they did this wow they did that i'm like yeah that's what i'm trying to tell you not everyone wants your stream and that's why they no no that's okay i don't mind that but
Starting point is 00:41:41 it's like it's it's when this when when this was announced i think the um i think that i think people have been lulled into a false sense of boredom with the broadcasts the way they're done False sense of boredom. As in, hockey broadcasts need to kind of stink. ESPN's taken a little bit to get some of their broadcasting elements up to par. TNT's done a great job. TSN are the old, reliable gold standard of hockey. That's how they do it.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Sportsnet has been up and down in different personalities. And, like, you look at their, you know, when they got that rights deal 10 years ago to now, like, there are no recognizable faces with the exception, I think, of Ron McLean and Elliot Friedman. and um you know i look at i look at the the package that amazon put together is so interesting they have done it the way that hockey night in canada used to do it guys they did it the cheapest possible way what what did they do for 45 minutes to start the game we talked about this on the show they just ran the in arena feed that's it and and now you can watch a little warm-up dude when i have leafs tickets i'm there at six o'clock so i can see warm-up i
Starting point is 00:42:47 like i've done that since i was a little boy i love watching warm-up uh and i wasn't even one of those kids at the glass asking for a puck i just would sit there and watch them and back then they could do warm-up without helmets on oh you can see their hairstyles and and then you know so they so they run like an in arena vibes feed okay and then what do they do they take a 500 table literally that that amazon desk is like five six hundred bucks to get it custom made it's not that expensive and they give adnan virk uh a microphone that's like a hundred dollar microphone and the other two people on the panel you're budgeting the whole program dude it's like a thousand dollars and that the more you know what's the most expensive part of that set that's not
Starting point is 00:43:31 human being is the suits uh the clothes they're wearing is more expensive than and and they do a one-shot camera and here it is yep game this is what hockey night in canada used to be if you go watch and i said this on money you go watch a feed from like 1981 there's actually a game where like lanny mcdonald's making his way back into maple leaf gardens for the first time after being traded to the colorado rockies and they literally have a camera out there following him in and you look at you're like wow maple leaf garden was kind of a piece of shit like it was really bad like wow holy and amazon what they're doing is nothing fancy they've got good people who are talented and have a you know a nice background in the game a lot of former players a lot of people with american
Starting point is 00:44:20 sports experience and what they are doing is they're going we're going to take you into the game and we're going to let the vibes carry it yep and you had after the game they're in the crowd and the crowd's chanting where is stamkos it doesn't matter what adnan or mark messier or anybody else are saying you have the crowd of leaf fans going where is stamkos and that's good enough that and and by the way montreal was the same montreal was the same broadcast they are going to have a mobile studio the entire season and this is what i think was missing it was when sportsnet got the rights they i remember sitting in the in the audience for this because i worked at rogers for the time for that time and i think i think actually you were you hadn't been hired
Starting point is 00:45:05 yet and jesse and i were there because you did the you did the prep sheet remember yes and they nobody read it you're gonna have no they didn't no we're gonna have a 5,500 square foot sound stage studio at the top of the cbc and if you've never been to the top of the cbc most people haven't the studios are huge it's huge world class huge and they we're gonna have multiple levels and you're gonna have the digital ice and you're gonna have this you have that remember the puck wall the yeah they use that thing for one season never used it it sat there for years just mothballed And, and it's because you tried to do too much. Amazon's coming in and going, it's a hockey game.
Starting point is 00:45:46 You're here to watch the hockey game. Here's some people who can talk about the hockey game and we're going to bring you in. And, and it was amazing watching the reaction online from Leaf fans. I think Montreal fans had the same thing, which was like, there were people who were like, I would, if I saw the reaction to the Amazon broadcast and I worked at one of the other networks, I would quit. like it's it's it's just it's such a different no if you quit you don't get your giant package that's the thing right yeah um it's a and i don't want to i don't want to overstate it but honestly
Starting point is 00:46:17 guys like this is what the fans have been asking for just just make it fun and easy and accessible and by the way there are reports about the loudness of the arena and part of what amazon has wanted to create is the feeling that you're there and so the microphones that they have in there are apparently far more sensitive than what sports that tsn has so i actually i have a question for jesse that i meant to ask him a couple weeks ago and i forgot so the home opener yes when they were announcing the players on the broadcast you could hear a pin drop yeah it sounded like no one cared no one was interested it was dead quiet was it like that in the building or was it the way it was miked the home open to be fair to the fans the home opener intros were planned poorly in that
Starting point is 00:47:08 there was a lot of dead time before that and that they had they had a bunch of like you know they have the new thing on the ice where the ice has all the graphics yes yes and all that stuff and then they had um it was like a band to kind of come out and play and they had all this stuff going on it dragged on a little too long but that the time they got to the announcing players and everything it wasn't hype so i i feel like a lot of people were blaming the fans for that but it felt like any other game where they were just announcing the players and it wasn't like the home opener because they're coming out being all loud so i don't they were a little quiet during the home opener but i don't blame them for that okay you know but the atmosphere on monday was
Starting point is 00:47:45 incredible yeah it was good stuff and and you know it's funny during during the infamous game three versus boston last year and i say infinite infamous because joe bowen was saying uh all the leaf fans are dead and blah blah blah i remember being really pissed about that because i was there jesse was there yes we were it was the crowd was loud the game sucked and there was no there was no reason to cheer it's not our responsibility to get the guys up to for the game but like the game was just a lull and the leafs didn't show up and so you know when i saw after and i'm glad you pointed that out jesse about the the openers when i saw people again media people especially going in oh the crowd was dead and you know it would be really nice if these like stop monday
Starting point is 00:48:27 was a concert stop i was there during game seven in 2013 and there were 25 000 people out and and that's before they had like the barriers and stuff you just showed up you mean outside the arena outside the arena maple leaf square don't fucking tell me that that arena isn't loud when it when it deserves to be but also and we talked about this on the stream because somebody asked me about it said don't don't pretend that the leafs history hasn't happened of course people are sitting there anxious yeah of course they are they've been hurt so many times there's a bunch of fan bases around the nhl i do look at and i go what are you so mad about and then yeah whenever the leafs lose i'm like yeah all right fair sabers fans like i'm here going i think they're doing
Starting point is 00:49:11 some good things like just give them some time and their fan base is like fuck you give them time and I'm like yeah all right that's fair that's actually very fair that you say that it's fine uh how could you ever blame Leaf fans for being somewhat anxious yeah I don't understand no Monday was great and I think you also see and games in the middle of the season in the middle of the week you get better crowds than on the weekends because funny the people who have the season tickets they'll sell those games and the people who can afford to go get go to games there's dynamic pricing so the weekend games always cost more so this Monday night Tampa game in the early in the season you got a lot of fans who won't be there game one of the playoffs won't
Starting point is 00:49:51 be their opening night where everybody who has the expensive seats are going to their actual seats on opening night it was great they got a round of applause at the end of the uh the the two-man advantage penalty kill like all that stuff um stallers got a giant cheer after every save like the crowd was really into it and you see it on those nights that there are fans here to cheer it's not every night we're not getting philly you know philly they're every single team they have is a different atmosphere new york too when you got like knicks fans in there at the garden you know probably not the ones at the bottom but the ones in the mid sections like it's a great atmosphere we don't have that every night in toronto no just because of how the expense of the tickets is and
Starting point is 00:50:28 the type of person who goes to the game but on nights where you have a night like monday it's great it's fantastic yes and hey if you want to be at a weekend game and a high profile one at that Leafs Oilers November 16th if you donate to my Easter Seals team Rachel's Raiders Adam's on it Jesse's on it if you donate any dollar amount to anybody on the team you are automatically
Starting point is 00:50:52 entered into a raffle for a pair of tickets to that game there you go please do it so yeah I love what what Amazon has started to do and again you just it's the they call it the kiss method keep it simple stupid simple we're gonna put you in the game you're gonna see a bunch of fans
Starting point is 00:51:08 You're going to see warm-ups, whatever, and we're going to do this cheaply, and it's going to run well, and boom, boom, boom. And I think sometimes – I think, too, there's been a real lack of competition in this country in a lot of sectors, and hockey broadcast is one of them. And I think that you having a third party in here is going to keep everybody on their toes and make everybody better. Competition makes broadcast better. I think if Amazon keeps eating their lunch, Sportsnet's going to have to figure out a way to get better. it's interesting because they they went young um young and somewhat inexperienced on on a lot of spots on the broadcast but fundamentally play by play john forsland elite uh ringside reporter andy petrillo freaking elite um they've done a lot of things uh up at the tippy tippy top
Starting point is 00:51:59 um having sundin on when he shows up in north america once every three years like in your first game in toronto is pretty cool there's a there's a lot of potential here and starting really simple is good because and like again i don't want to sound like i'm shit talking sports net but they tried to pull out listen let's just be honest does anybody is anybody out there going man i can't wait to watch the sports net broadcast i enjoy sorry i enjoy let's just be honest about it i'll and it's not because i don't love the people there yeah i think that there is a managerial decision to go here's here's what we want and and the producers and the talent don't have a choice this is what they want but what i was gonna say is like they went we're
Starting point is 00:52:44 gonna do this and that and that and that and that and when it didn't work all that was left to do because you can't add to what is already too much yep so you strip and then you know after a couple years of doing this it's like all right so you're you're a couple years into this and you're giving us less now are you gonna do you plan on building that back up still no okay so what do you do right whereas amazon can start here and if they want to build on that and add to that they can't yeah this is what i'm saying yep no it's a good point next monday adam's gonna be back streaming as we mentioned it'll be the winnipeg jets versus toronto maple east it'll be in winnipeg by the time we get to next monday will the winnipeg jets have lost a game that is
Starting point is 00:53:33 the challenge on tap for adam and steve they play seattle tomorrow night in seattle they play calgary saturday night that's gonna be fantastic hockey winnipeg uh calgary how did that become a huge game oh right wow saturday night calgary winnipeg and then monday they play the toronto maple east damn october 28th adam's next stream have the winnipeg jets lost steve yes oh adam yes but not in regulation oh good answer good answer they will they'll get beaten by calgary saturday night in overtime that's what i want i want hockey night in canada flames jets ot wagon and you're and you're picking the uh you're picking the flames yeah yeah and then i wanted to go back to the other hottest team in the national hockey league the minnesota wild just so i can clarify
Starting point is 00:54:24 their hot start they it is a franchise record for the uh single longest consecutive um not trailing streak to start a season but they're only second all time so they have a chance in the next couple games to pass the all-time record wow currently the wild have trailed haven't trailed for a single second that's 360 minutes of regulation time the longest streak to start a season um without trailing is the boston bruins of course in 1969 1970 they went 457 minutes and 21 seconds which is approximately i think 7.9 hockey games so minnesota wild i think got to go about two more games and they can beat that all-time record that was from michael russo's article that's in the athletic so the wild are doing something that hasn't been done since bobby
Starting point is 00:55:16 or did it yeah stupid the jets in the wild unbelievable starts of the year uh i didn't expect that at all and the connor hellebuck 920 challenge that i got like it's it's uh are you getting your ass not going well he's currently at a 948 through five starts this year who told you who told you that's like undisputed undisputed vesna front runner right dude he's every year he's in the vesna conversation i know well they haven't lost i hope so conor hellebuck is a fucking god and he doesn't get enough media coverage because he plays in a small market but he's a god you're probably right he's a fucking god like like you like shisterkin is gonna make he deserves what hellebuck is making is a fucking steal it's yeah no it's unbelievable
Starting point is 00:56:04 seven and a half million bucks i understand the age thing but like whatever whatever oh man um hey i wanted he is one season removed from winning the vesna trophy so i think he's he has received some recognition every year which was also like his second vesna trophy every year so he's better honestly they're like people are recognizing i know that lenis i know that lenis olmark is like is is you know we got he deserved his vest and whatever but lenis olmark was playing on like a crazy team with loaded with talent fucking hellebuck has not had that since 2017 2018 crazy team loaded with talent this way the way that the bruins were you look at that no jets fan listening to this wants to hear that they should have won the cup that jets
Starting point is 00:56:47 unbelievable yeah unbelievable flurry said no not this year that's what i mean yep and and yet hellebuck continues to be himself man guy fucking rules man he's my favorite goalie in the league um i want to i want to talk about this uh we got two big hits that one was one was a five thousand dollar fine the other was a non-suspension and it's causing some things so obviously we'll start with the toronto it's toronto tampa oliver eckman larson on jake gensel uh and jake gensel does here what i think you should do this is the smart move and steve what happens when you get hit and it's Kind of, maybe on the line. Refs have a really hard job,
Starting point is 00:57:27 and sometimes they make decisions on what they think they saw. That is why you need to confirm what they saw by acting like you are dead. And Jake Gensel does that, gets up and plays perfectly fine after this. This is a, what do they call it? A reverse hit?
Starting point is 00:57:43 A reverse hit. Yeah. A booty hit. And I understand when we play the screen grab of this, we can't play the actual hit, but we do a little screen grab here um i understand why olive reckman larson is penalized for this because technically interference it's interference genzel hadn't touched the puck yet right he's going for the puck but he hadn't touched it yet that is textbook interference a five thousand
Starting point is 00:58:09 dollar fine for this was a real shock for me and according to darren dreger uh a one game suspension was on the table i i don't know i don't know how you do that yeah oliver oliver oliver oliver uh you don't play for george peros's former team anymore uh you gotta cool it that's what it is like the screen can we show can we show this the reaction here i don't here let's see it bang yeah it's interference and it's not great um and as a like you know what if everyone suspended him they would have done him a favor so he didn't have to play against Columbus oh geez yeah he could have used the night off that was terrible sorry um no Gensel puts himself in a vulnerable position but at the end of the day you can't you can't do that no right so yeah protect yourself but you know Oliver
Starting point is 00:59:02 wasn't supposed to interfere with that player he received a two-minute minor for the interference that he interfered and it didn't matter just like a couple years ago with kyle clifford it didn't matter that he was kicked out uh game one he got a five minute major in the first period of a stanley cup playoff game uh but you see the leafs killed it off so he got two games because that's how these um i don't respect them like fundamentally i don't respect them as hockey people or men um they are they're so terrible at what they do um and i think they buckle um at the i think a lot of leaf fans are almost there they're almost there the i saw a lot of people say the conspiracy theory that they subscribe to is that the
Starting point is 00:59:57 department of player safety is against the leafs i don't think it's necessarily that they're against the Leafs I think they're at their core terrified and resentful of Toronto um there are a lot of people I've hung around enough and heard enough things anecdotally um there are people at the league who are terrified of this market they are terrified how this isn't because this this I'm going to be honest with you this is coming across like a little bit oh it's a little Alex Jonesy for me i know but it's it's it's like everything with the nhl the lights are far too bright and that's how they treat this market that's how they've always treated it when something happens with the leafs you gotta put on a show you gotta put on this big fucking show because it's toronto
Starting point is 01:00:47 and it involves the leafs and it can't just be a what is this what isn't this let's just have a normal punishment um you know a lot of people are like oh it's because peros got knocked out by Colton Orr. I don't believe that it's that. I do think he has a clear inherent bias towards people that he's played with and organizations that he's played on. But when it comes to Toronto, you've always got to make an example. You've always got to put on a show. And the fact that things have gone completely unpunished and they even thought about a one game suspension here is a complete joke especially given that oel has like what history does he have being good lord and like we were we were talking to some people yesterday about the the bright lights of when
Starting point is 01:01:41 an incident happens with toronto when an incident happens with new york and to a lesser degree or a similar degree when uh when something happens with montreal and then a gift plops right into our lap that night of Truba hits who was the Canadian who got knocked out? Justin Barron. We're getting to that next. So you see that and you're like, alright, it's showtime
Starting point is 01:02:05 George. Just shut the lights off. Now I have to be honest with you. I think this hits clean. Yeah, and it was real clean on the ice. I think this hit is clean. I think Barron's down low and I think Truba's a big boy and the way
Starting point is 01:02:20 that the rule book is written, I'm not saying if you want to talk you want to debate whether this is headshots are good for the game i'm with you i don't think they are but i look at a hit like this and i go baron's low and the way the rulebook's written it gets him directly in the head the way the rulebook's written is if the shoulder is coming through uh and the and the head is low but but it's not up if it's not a targeted head which this isn't then it's a clean hit and so here's the thing this whole i want you I want you to understand something about the rulebook. Rulebook needs to be changed.
Starting point is 01:02:52 Headshots are illegal, but they're not. Headshots, targeted headshots are illegal. Headshots are not illegal. Because what's happening is, you see where Barron's knees are, right? They're in an L shape. He's bent over. He's mid-stride. Trouba's there.
Starting point is 01:03:07 He's put himself in a vulnerable spot. And it's Trouba, right? Yeah, he also has the puck. Yeah. Which is a key difference. Guys, that's just a monster hit by the NHL rules. I can't see a world that is terrible. Yeah, I think we all agree with you on that one.
Starting point is 01:03:21 It's Trouba being one of the best body checkers in the National Hockey League. I saw some banter about the elbow because his elbow comes up. But the point of contact, it's clearly tucked, like perfectly. Yeah, he follows through, but he's coming through. Aren't you allowed? Yeah, he's coming through with the side of his shoulder there. Yeah, and he's off his skates, but it's after impact. right um listen it's it's a big hit uh it's i struggle with it because you don't like
Starting point is 01:03:54 seeing that outcome for baron um but this is one of those cases where i'm looking at truba and i'm like what do you what are you supposed to do um i i just i again i look at the oel thing and i go okay it's interference that's the key difference he was given an interference penalty yeah and i agree i think so i think the truba hits clean the oel thing just does not make sense to me and this is stuff that happens regularly in the nhl yeah it was a very odd it was like that oel hit i'd already forgotten about it and then all of a sudden it was announced it was suspended it was like or not suspended fine i was like what i i know that's a bizarre one and i uh i get it comes down to this is a group of guys and ryan getzlaff has just joined
Starting point is 01:04:36 he just got here he just got here oh i just joined my friend's friggin department by the way ryan getzlab who was probably probably one of the most violent hockey players just and it's it's honestly it's hilarious i think it's a fine a fine i'm fine so it's just an echo chamber if you if it's a bad example but if you had a judge if you picked a judge in the criminal justice system who was a guy who's like hey this guy's fought a lot of people outside of bars like he'd make a great judge that's how they're running it ah shut up and eat your slop it's crazy just continue to eat your slop maddie did you have something to say i was just saying like these things can be complicated too right like how big is the guy that he's hitting oh no he's
Starting point is 01:05:25 troop is bigger but at the point is if the hit but just the height right yeah but if the hit is coming through uh the chest area it's perfectly legal and it is yeah and i know his head knocks off a troop his shoulder but the reality is the way the rule's written is that it's legal yeah yeah i i i know i know we differ on this um i think when there's a borderline hit that isn't fined or suspended like this one or maybe not even necessarily borderline but something that drew a lot of attention it's rangers it's habs i think you should put a spotlight on it yeah and You should be like, this is why this is within the rules. That would be setting a precedent.
Starting point is 01:06:09 You've been doing that all day long. Yeah, exactly. All right, what do you do all fucking day? Thank you, Jess. It's never going to happen. Again, we've talked about this on the show. Steve, why would they want you to be able to hold them to account? Why would you want to set a bar?
Starting point is 01:06:21 Oh, because it's always good to treat your customer base like adults. Yeah, but it doesn't make sense to explain legal plays. Yeah. Then everything that happens on the ice, you're supposed to explain? you like that was a goal you limit it to like i don't know one a week or something i don't listen help people understand your sport that's an investment if you gotta hire a couple extra people to work on this for god's sake do it stop stop this shit stop like every time this happens unless there's a suspension then we get those wonderful breakdowns um you're just left pissing
Starting point is 01:07:01 in the wind i think it'd be nice for the breakdowns with the fines like as well like i totally agree oel there's no breakdown video it's just hey he's fine and there's no other explanation i'd like that here's why this is illegal enough to be a fine and not illegal enough to be a suspension like yes i understand why that's hard uh you work for the nhl and i don't actually care if your job's um yeah you work in the best hockey league in the world fucking grow i i agree with that 100 like the the fines are like they're infractions just like the suspensions you've you've declared that something here was illegal enough to warrant a fine that should also come with the same explanation as as the suspension i 100 agree with that yeah like like i agree to put this in former
Starting point is 01:07:48 player terms since that office is almost exclusively former players you can't win without buy-in and And I don't think you can have fans that are going to be the best fans for your league possible, business-wise, if they're not bought in. You've got to give them something to chew on, for God's sake. You can't just be like, this bad, everything else good. Like, why not highlight why this is okay? Why not? What's wrong with that? I think the dangerous territory, I think, that Adam's referencing is like you can't really pick and choose what you're – if something's legal, then it's legal, then you leave it alone.
Starting point is 01:08:30 You can't really pick and choose which legal hits you're explaining, right? It'd be nice. Sure you can. It'd be nice and helpful, but then you're angering fan bases when it's like, oh, there's this legal hit. Why wasn't that? Where's my explanation for that? Well, so anger them all. I think –
Starting point is 01:08:42 Yeah, well, it's – They already are. They already are, Walden. It's easier to do we're doing the same thing across the board as to pick and choose which ones we're going to explain. so i understand it becomes more complicated for them to just pick and choose and i'm asking them to do what's not easy i'm asking them to take initiative and get and have some fucking pride and then you're asking them to create more problems for themselves yeah like i don't if somebody if somebody came to your job and was like hey make more problems for yourself you'd be like
Starting point is 01:09:07 no like that people always ask me to make more shit no but i'm more problem not more content it's it's not a problem it's no no more people it would be a problem if if just like is that like you're choosing what to explain and what not to the problem is then there's wildly unpopular compared to their competition that's that's not you're not but i'm talking about this specific point here i am like you then we're talking about like hey there's blatant stuff we can point to towards like biases and there's other things that because if you do hey we're doing this rangers video next week there's another rangers video then there's actual like things here that people look at and they're like hey why are you doing you're creating more instances of fan
Starting point is 01:09:47 basis to get angry at the content you're making the best thing that they think that they can do whether it's right or it's wrong is only appear when they believe there is a reason to appear does that make sense it's like you know it's what i said um on monday night i'm like the bet somebody said you know you you guys complain about the refs a lot um uh are there any instances of a good referee game and i said yes when you don't hear about them yeah right that's how player safety should look at this is that if they're well run and they're not and i'm with you so why not highlight hits that are good well and this is the thing i i don't think you're wrong on that in in a in a vacuum but i think that what jesse is saying is let's say you use the truba hit as the
Starting point is 01:10:28 example of why this is a good hit what it then creates is a benchmark for which the next time he gets suspended for a hit rangers fans go but you said that this is the and it creates this whole thing and oh man imagine having a precedent to to look back on to help guide your decisions and they do internally isn't that how any good business they do internally yeah uh they have video sessions with the refs on this they have video sessions with the the teams the players the general managers everybody they just don't release it to the public and i whether or not that's like children they don't treat us like educated sports fans and they intentionally keep us dumb. Well, maybe that changes
Starting point is 01:11:13 because, listen, Gary's not going to be in power forever. Yes, he is. Until he's not, yes, he is. Two in five Canadians will hear the words you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th,

At participating A&W locations in Ontario. I thought it was interesting, moving on to the next subject. Sure. That the NHL scheduled 16 games last night. That's so cool.
Starting point is 01:12:26 But it's a Tuesday night, and it happens to be the night the NBA opens. I didn't even realize that. Could they have picked a better night for this? I don't think you're losing fans. No? You think they're too silent? I think they're two different audiences, the ones that are going to sit down and watch Celtics-Knicks
Starting point is 01:12:45 as opposed to a hockey game. I like it. I'm tired of the NHL ducking the other leagues. Go head-to-head. What I was going to say is Sunday nights are big football nights and Monday nights are actually big football nights too. I would like to see this happen on a Saturday. That's a big NHL night.
Starting point is 01:13:06 Like, Monday is, in hockey terms, a national night in Canada. Would love to see it happen on a Monday or a Wednesday, another national night. It's Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. And I guess because when you run 32 teams all at once, it's very regional. But I just feel like pick – like, if we're going to build nights, Tuesday night's not the NHL's night. They have chosen their three nights, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday. Yeah, I don't know what that's like.
Starting point is 01:13:32 Why not put it on one of those is my question. Yeah. it didn't really make sense it also like i don't know about you guys but it didn't affect my viewing at all no not at all i watched the leaf game and they don't do anything about it in canada either yeah i is was the broadcast the frozen frenzy thing available to us like no like so i don't i didn't notice that there was 16 16 games on so i don't know i had the bad picture and picture on the tv and the other one was the celtics mix like and then that was a blowout so that went off there and they threw on another hockey game right it was it didn't affect my
Starting point is 01:14:06 viewing at all especially when i have an lfr it's difficult to watch another game anyway yeah i do like the nights where i can watch the late game as well something like that actually i watch a lot of hockey sundays for some reason yeah like it's i don't know there's nothing else on the the other thing i wonder i forgot um well sorry there is there's football but i don't watch it because i was talking about the picture and picture i threw on um the other the only other game available was bruins uh the bruins no it was the the florida game florida minnesota i think or maybe it was the bruins game i forget but all of the games that were on there were so many games on we couldn't watch any of them like the the habs game was regional on tsn the winnipeg game was
Starting point is 01:14:45 regional on tsn the flames game was regional on sportsnet every single game that was on they were all on they were all regional games and i got the blue screen of death on the bell box the words this programming is not available in eurasia so like i literally couldn't watch them it didn't mean anything that all the games were all but steve don't you have uh yar matey plus i know like that seemed like for all stupid didn't affect my viewing at all uh uh uh okay all right uh now i forgot about that you would have missed this you would have missed this because all of the games last night were regional and therefore you wouldn't be interested you wouldn't like it it's regional uh but the red
Starting point is 01:15:27 wings beat the islanders and they beat them one to nothing how many shots did the red wings have 10 10 that's actually been stat corrected to 11 oh they had 11 and they got stacker okay well the box score was not updated then so it's 10 clear is fair enough that's great uh not very many so that's fucking hilarious alex lion first second third fourth fifth star man the wings have found a goalie there he is they needed seven guys but they got him they found him good for them they had nearly as many goalies as shots yeah yeah that was uh that's unbelievable and that is any islanders fans listening that's that's an islanders ass loss oh my god dude the islanders by the way uh have they are tied for second last in the league in goals and some of the teams that
Starting point is 01:16:20 they're tied with are bonkers so san jose is the least amount not surprising especially with celebrini out but the teams they're tied with are nashville philadelphia and edmonton 14 goals a piece uh the difference between the islanders and the oilers is that the islanders don't allow goals and the Oilers have a lot. The Islanders are a negative one on their goal differential. The Oilers, for a differentiator, and obviously the Oilers have not
Starting point is 01:16:48 started well, negative 13. They can make that up in a weekend. Yeah, of course. I just think it's the Nashville Bruins game was the other game that Sportsnet was showing. We could watch that available to people in the Toronto region. And Nashville won! Yeah. That's crazy! They won.
Starting point is 01:17:04 They actually won a game. Good for them. That's good. Feel good for the press. Hey, it's been announced today, by the way, that for Utah HC, Sean Dursey will be out four to six months and John Marino will be out three to four months. So Maverick Lamoureux, who is six foot seven every time he steps on the ice, has been recalled. And listen, that flipping sucks because Marino and Dursey were bound to have great years and they were both of them in successive years. Great acquisitions for Utah. But I am excited to see Maverick Lamoureux. That was the whole thing with Utah is, well, on top of having an arena.
Starting point is 01:17:45 Hey, they completely rebuilt their decor. And half the guys they got are gone. Yeah. And most of the right guys are gone. I also wonder if this Lamoureux experiment doesn't work out or they find that they need some more puck movement, does a gently used Timothy Lilligren appeal to you? Or you can have Connor Timmons back.
Starting point is 01:18:05 No, you can't. Actually, I like him. No, you can't. I'm growing on him. Connor Timmons has now worked his way into a back-to-back situation. They didn't rotate him out. That's crazy, eh? No, Lilligren to Utah makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 01:18:19 Same with Edmondson. Edmondson? Lilligren to Edmondson? Yeah. No, I don't want that. I know, because he'll be great. Yo, but I'm telling you, look at Edmondson's decor. I want him to go to Utah and have an okay career.
Starting point is 01:18:32 I don't want him to go to Edmondson and immediately win the cup. Yeah, well. Oh, man. that would make perfect sense yeah a third pair of lilligran dermot oh kill me uh kyle dubas from pittsburgh going that was right the whole fucking time uh watching from the couch uh yeah so i thought i'd bring that up um this is also interesting guys nah i love this um uh penguins nhl rank by expected goals per 60 at five on five oh that's a lot of words but your five on five expected goals 22 23 they were 21st that's the last year of the hexdahl burke era if i'm not
Starting point is 01:19:13 mistaken yes it was then you have the kyle dubas era last year five on five expected goals per 60 27th that's surprising surprising considering we thought really and it was their power play was the issue yeah i thought they were okay outside of that so that's interesting and this year small sample size we're about 10 of the way in small sample size their 30th oh man we're the two teams behind them uh it's a good question i'll have to check evolving hockey on that but i love when we do that i love man these guys are like third last who are the other guys that's freaking awful um that's gonna take a while that's gonna take a while forget it dude it's fine whatever but i just thought you know this is a guy that that you know dubious's teams you know say what you want about
Starting point is 01:20:05 them but they always have pretty good numbers five on five expected and i'm wondering you said expected per 60 per 60 okay so i'm trying to figure out now what what do they do because they've had a good start from larzella they've a good start from gino uh although gino didn't have a great game i think last game that's okay that's all right he's been negated by all the seller ones what are they gonna do um you got a five million dollar goaltender sitting on the sidelines dubas has has a blind spot i think like i think um we've seen enough from his time in toronto and now he's been in pittsburgh for over a year if you had to say he has uh you know a strength and a weakness like okay he gets a few good forwards really really good forwards they
Starting point is 01:21:00 put up a bunch of points for him every year then he's got to fill out the rest of the lineup now come playoff time it never really seems to work out but he has been pretty good at identifying this guy for cheap this guy for cheap this guy for cheap and i can fill out a bottom six like one thing i've seen a lot of penguins fans talk about is this bottom six compared to last year's and they're like wow what an improvement it is it is jari is not in the net anymore um so once nadalkovich is healthy you have and he is oh and he is there you go sorry last i checked he was uh on his conditioning stint so you got him in blomquist you could do worse than that that's okay you can get by on that decor is terrible and in toronto like very decor was
Starting point is 01:21:45 always terrible or thin you know um when they when that's his run got jake muzzin they shouldn't have stopped at jake muzzin no they should have kept going and getting more people to surround jake muzzin and morgan riley well and they didn't look at some of the draft picks dermot who started pretty good and fizzled now he's in edmonton and we'll see what happens injury played part of that rasp of sandin never quite gelled with the team even though the potential was always there traded him timothy lillygrin i think this that was a mark hunter pick um or no sorry man he was supposed to lamorello people forget man timothy was supposed to go top five he was at 17 that was a gift yeah it was a gift from god you can't revisionist except that's what
Starting point is 01:22:38 we it's what we knew at the time you know the best defensive draft pick dubas made as uh as a with the leafs sean dersey yeah no question single game for the organization yeah no question it took him with a second rounder in his like draft plus one year and here you go send him straight to la Steve, everything you said was very nice I think it still holds true But Adam, I'm pretty sure you have the stat backwards Do I have the stat backwards? Are you fucking joking?
Starting point is 01:23:08 They're 30th in expected goals But they're third They have the highest expected goals Liar Per 60? Right now, expected goals per 60 The only teams ahead of them are the Rangers and Hurricanes No, Adam
Starting point is 01:23:25 4.42 expected goals per 60 The Hurricanes have 3.78. The Penguins, in third place in the league by expected goals per 60. You've exposed my plan, which is to dunk on the Penguins every time. 3.42 expected goals per 60, according to Evolving Hockey. Yeah, you got the stat backwards. If we rank them by, in reverse order, they'd be 30th. So I was right.
Starting point is 01:23:52 Yeah, no, you got them in 30th. Look who's down there at the bottom. It's good. Oh, wait, no, it's the top. Stop fucking with it. Oh, no, I reversed it to make it look like he was right. But you see, you got to step back. I believe the previous two years would have been.
Starting point is 01:24:11 Is that five on five, though? I assume so. Because it's supposed to be five on five. Oh, my God, that's funny. No, strength. Yep. Okay, good. Just making sure.
Starting point is 01:24:20 I set strength five on five. Dumbass. I have expected goals per 60. This is evolvinghockey.com where you got the site. We can even do the other years. Let's see if you got. Oh, man. I bet you.
Starting point is 01:24:31 I read to the other years. They're great. Oh, heavens. Are the other years good or bad? Okay. So expected goals per 60. I'm doing this live with everybody. Yep.
Starting point is 01:24:41 No, you got the other years backwards too. Last year, expected goals per 60. No, I read the thing wrong. I had expected goals. We know. No, no, no, no. No, no. Here's what I got.
Starting point is 01:24:53 Here, check this again. expected goals against per 60 oh see that's a completely i said the wrong thing totally different i'm sorry that is me expected goals against her 60 okay okay that's my bad uh no this was all your bad i'm going in depth about like a draft record and shit no but oh my god you're wrong about the draft expected goals no i'm definitely right there but yeah uh they are yeah they're um that's 23 24 they're six yeah so they're six so yeah That's six worse, though. Yeah, that's what I mean.
Starting point is 01:25:26 Yeah, so I wasn't wrong on that. Yeah, expected goals against per 60. Right. Did you say against? I said it for, I meant against. I'm sorry. Okay. So you just said four and against.
Starting point is 01:25:36 When I was talking about their shitty defense, I was accidentally right? No, but you were right. You were right about this defense. Expected goals against per 60. Yeah, they're 30th. I apologize. So you just messed up four and against.
Starting point is 01:25:49 That's a lot less egregious. That's kind of a big deal, though. Still kind of a big screw up. It's a lot more forgivable than just doing the stat. Hey, forgivable. Let's go. Forgivable. All right, now, one other thing I wanted to bring up.
Starting point is 01:26:02 Against. Yes. Wait. There's been. Shouldn't we finish? Well. No, Steve, I interrupted your point about the Penguins. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:26:12 He needs to build better defense. But I feel like I interrupted for a good reason. Ignores goaltending, ignores defense. I don't know about ignores goaltending. He struggles to have two. Matt Murray and Peter Barazic. No, I know. He struggles to have two.
Starting point is 01:26:22 You luck into Jack Campbell's really good 18-month role. Oh, yeah. And, I mean, wait, was Martin Jones him? No, he wasn't. So, yeah, that decor needs help is a consistent piece of feedback for Kyle Dubas' teams in the NHL. Guys, there's been a new arena announcement. Just last thing, the stats there, I think things are a lot better in Penguin Land.
Starting point is 01:26:49 Well, for scoring it is. If they're up there and scoring, just figure out how to play fucking defense. I don't think they have the personnel, man. Well, this is what I'm saying. Yeah, it's a lot simpler than we think, right? They have the stars up front. They have better depth than they did last year. They could have some goaltending.
Starting point is 01:27:06 It might be at least okay. The decor is not good enough. The thing I just want to throw out there, and I feel like I'm going to get my head cut off for saying this. if his name wasn't Mike Sullivan are we talking having a lot more conversation about the coach being the problem
Starting point is 01:27:25 if it wasn't Mike Sullivan he'd be fired absolutely he'd be gone we wouldn't be talking about firing him this year we would have been talking about firing him last year he had signed the extension before Dubas even got there
Starting point is 01:27:41 Fenway Sports and Entertainment Group the people the management who used to be there who are no longer there and i think that's interesting um signed him to that deal uh when you know during the hex doll burke like waning days yeah but dubas is the gm and the president can't he fire him no no because they're because fenway sports and entertainment group were a big fan of mike sullivan and they don't want to pay him was he make five and a half people really do just write shit down he makes like he makes they're not gonna they're gonna Let him make a decision.
Starting point is 01:28:12 They're not going to fire a $15 million contract into the sun. Like, it's a three-year extension, isn't it? And it's five plus a year. And they're not, they're like, no, you're stuck with this guy. By the way, everybody's like, he's going to be Team USA coach. And I keep going, yeah, how come? How come? Right.
Starting point is 01:28:28 He's the Four Nations face-off head coach plus Team USA at the Olympics. So you have somebody who's tied to this big organization of Team USA. There comes the cachet of being that head coach. and in the last couple years he's been in charge of the team with some of the worst goals against per 60 in the league and also the worst power play that we've ever seen in modern hockey ever and then he's gonna get team usa and they're gonna kill it because they're probably the best team on paper right it's not so no i i'm excited for that because we'll find out like how much of it is the horses and the personnel or the coaching i don't i don't think they're nobody's really
Starting point is 01:29:03 blaming the coaching right now well i don't think sullivan i think pens fans are i don't know i don't No, they are like, again, it goes back to like, okay, so you're going to scratch bunting, but Bavillier is going to continue to do what next to Crosby that here's the thing, man. Sully's a very good coach. Sometimes it's over. It's just over.
Starting point is 01:29:22 Usually when a coach gets fired, it doesn't mean they're bad. It just means that it's over. You're ineffective on the team. You're Sheldon. Keith was never a bad head coach. No, it was just, it's time to go. It was time. I still think he's a match made in heaven for the devil.
Starting point is 01:29:35 Oh, yeah, he's perfect. I didn't even mean to be clever. Wow. I understand from a business point of view Why they're like Well Why would we get rid of Sullivan We have to pay him
Starting point is 01:29:43 Five and a half million bucks And if he's not working for us We're paying that for nothing The guy is from Boston It's Fenway Sports and Entertainment Group Come on What do you think's going on here Glad you asked
Starting point is 01:29:54 The answer is to win hockey games That's clearly not the priority for the Sox That's clearly not Who else do they own Liverpool I don't know if any other Well Liverpool's doing well Isn't it Liverpool
Starting point is 01:30:04 Yeah something like that I think it's Liverpool The Sox and the Pens are not teams that are built to win. Okay, and North American teams. Penguins are better. Can I get to the truly important news, guys? The billion-dollar arena complex in Nevada? Oh, Adam.
Starting point is 01:30:25 Is it in Henderson? No. Damn. No, it's not. That sucks. Nevada Arena. Only good things happen in Henderson. It's in Reno.
Starting point is 01:30:33 Ooh. Grand Sierra Resort. Nice. And it's spearheaded by owner of the Tucson Roadrunners, Alex. Oh, my God. The MLH finally finds their home. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:30:51 So it's going to be it's going to include a 10,000 seat arena, a satellite ice rink, a dedicated parking garage. Ooh, I've seen this before. Workforce, housing and more. There will be tax increment financing as a part of the public funding mechanism. And let me guess, there's some nice drawings and graphics. Oh, man, there are so many drawings and graphics. Do you want me to send it over? No, no.
Starting point is 01:31:12 I want to move on from this as quickly as possible. I just wanted to let you know it's not. No, they're building another monorail in Ogdenville. Dude, I'm telling you. Did you hear that? Steve, the monorail's coming. Buy gum and put them on the map. Fuck you, Alex.
Starting point is 01:31:25 You know what's nuts, too, is Tucson, apparently, I don't have the numbers in front of me, but apparently, they draw really, really well. Sure. Like, they regularly, no, no, Tucson, like, where they are. So it's like, why would you move them? Because he's not particularly clever. He's not good at editing. Take a shovel and put it in the ground or I'll tell you where else to put it.
Starting point is 01:31:45 Who cares about this human being? Yeah. All right. No. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. Starting point is 01:32:41 You gotta try Breakfast at A&W At participating A&W locations in Ontario How's Steve? Holy shit! Let's talk very quickly I want to talk quickly about the Matt Sandin event that you were at
Starting point is 01:32:56 You hosted a, was it a 60 minute Let me bring up the uh session it was a in conversation in conversation fireside chat i hate that term there's no fire by the way um and and strangely enough there was originally we had proposed that this be a an sdp um but the hockey hall of fame would have been easier the hockey hall of fame doesn't allow podcasts because everybody and their mom would request podcast space so they said how about we just make this easy and say no to everybody so it was just steve yeah and matt's uh and 200 people and jesse was at the game and i had to stream so we couldn't be there
Starting point is 01:33:32 but very very cool you were your jerk gardens uh jersey yeah which i matt's was matt's was a member there i think he's a part owner now is he not i'm not sure i couldn't confirm that but i know he played there um and so tell us how the event went this is very cool oh my god okay matt had his arm around you steve i know he's so big um i gotta stop taking pictures with people who are six five uh because everyone's gonna think i'm freaking five three uh so this is that's the hockey hall of fame like trophy room if you're beautiful if you've ever been there um so what they did someone sent me a really funny tweet they said did the stanley cup take this picture because the stage we were sitting on and where the person taking this photo uh is standing is
Starting point is 01:34:17 right where the stanley cup is is usually oh it wasn't there at the time no okay so no that would have been a little salt in the wound but i was gonna say if you did the event with the stanley cup and matt's oh my god matt's his name isn't on it yeah so that's that's why it's a bit of a problem but so what here's here's what i didn't know the trophy room which has obviously the stanley cup the heart the vesna the all of them they're in these big giant cases and i saw the rundown and they're like oh yeah they're gonna um take all the trophies out of the room so that they can put all the seats and what i didn't know is all the trophies are actually on like all those stands those giant stands that the trophies are in are on wheels oh i had no idea that's really
Starting point is 01:35:03 smart yeah they're locked in really tight so obviously like idiots like me can't stumble knock them over knock them over like abe simpson so uh but they they cleared out the room amazingly fast they set up 200 chairs and um you know after our show on monday i went downstairs and i finished listening to matz's audiobook and uh was writing my questions i was going through the audience questions that i was sent um and i'm reading the rundown and i'm just like oh they they go oh meet and greet with the swedish ambassador like this the ambassador to canada from sweden was at this event i believe she's the second woman from the left on that photo and uh no the left your other left no the one ironically the one that you circled there is amy stewart who wrote the book
Starting point is 01:35:56 with matt's one with the one yeah she wrote she uh she's awesome yeah no yeah absolutely awesome um so that morning and this is important to the story um my wife has started putting strawberries in jars to preserve them more and i went to to grab them fell right out of my hand shattered on the floor that sucks so we got to clean it all up we were here and i'm dropping shit all over the floor um we get there um and i'm pouring myself a coffee and my hand is like this like so the part of the reason i called shaking for anybody listening yeah i was i was shaking sorry the part of the reason i called you adam exhausted uh after the tampa game is the adrenaline dump of the day i was so fucking nervous for this event i was so scared because
Starting point is 01:36:48 it's an hour on stage with matt sundin he's the this is the only event where he's gonna do this and uh i don't want to be shitty yes for this guy who i i grew up watching him and uh um i got i got to meet him he signed a like 250 bucks in a disgusting amount of time like just so fast i could i could never i could never and um i'm i'm talking to amy before we do the event i'm like i know he's done a bunch of interviews what hasn't he been asked um what has he been asked that's a waste of time you know what i i talked to her about the book it was nice to have someone to talk to the book about or talk to about uh the book talk to her wow i did great name for a podcast it really is um and she really helped uh calm me down and the only way to get through an event like
Starting point is 01:37:46 that when you're that nervous is uh the way sharks uh sleep their brains a quarter of their brain at a time okay that's from time at the zoo uh half of your brain just when you're sitting on stage with matt sundin you're sitting on stage with your childhood um needs to just be elevator music and the other half of your brain just needs to be concentrated on doing a good job here and then like it all uh connects at the end and you sort of wake up on stage where the stanley cup should be going holy shit um uh i managed to hide my juror garden jersey from him until he got on stage there's a great photo uh i have here jesse maybe i'll try to send it to you there's a great photo i have that someone sent me um where he's genuinely surprised to see it um there you go
Starting point is 01:38:43 i managed to hide it from him um i got a few laughs out of him i got a few laughs out of the the swedish ambassador um he got the whole room just swooning for him because he was talking about the leaf so romantically and what it was like um i brought a stat up to him here's here's the photo there's he's looking at the juror garden thing he's like oh no way where'd you get that um uh what was i gonna say oh yeah i brought this stat up to him so he only played 41 games with the vancouver canucks in his 18th and final season but don't talk about that no we don't in the 17 seasons before that with the leafs and nordiques he missed a total of 55 games and i said that to him and you know there's a few like oh like from the crowd and he he just goes
Starting point is 01:39:33 is that good i go that's matt's that's incredible i go that's an average of three a season for 17 seasons he had eight perfect seasons where he played um a few of them were 80 game seasons a few of them were 82 and one of them was 84 post lockout yeah um uh and and even the 94 95 season he only missed one game and there was one other season where he only missed one game so there's a 10 season chunk of his career where he missed two games it's absolutely insane so i talked to him about that uh talked to him about some of the funny stories from his book and i don't i don't want to blow them all but like um you know him taking shots on his grandma in the driveway um he has one of the most gruesome hockey injuries i've ever heard of i've never ever ever heard
Starting point is 01:40:24 of a player taking a slap shot to the forehead and when the team doctor is trying to dress the wound he goes what is that what is that he's picking at it and he pulls it out he goes Matt you're not going to believe this it's a shard of the puck
Starting point is 01:40:40 wow part of the puck broke off in this man's head absolutely unbelievable why don't guys why don't everybody wear a visor i don't know why did it take two did wear a visor actually early on in his career in in uh in in uh with the nordiques well and and he wore it after this injury and then he went on a slump and
Starting point is 01:41:02 everyone gave him shit for it oh so any any talks about that oh wow um but i was asking asking about his longevity and you'll probably like this jesse um and you know what's your secret and he goes well i mean when i played i was six five and i was 230 pounds and i go i'm 230 pounds mats it hasn't helped me stay healthy and then that got a big laugh and then he looks at me he goes yeah but you're not six five hey i thought that was very good that is good made me feel good about myself i wish i wish we were allowed to tape it oh i know that's okay i i we got lots of pictures i wish i wish there were like clips i'm sure fans some people probably against the rules um uh took some videos and stuff i would definitely like them for my own collection i'll be honest
Starting point is 01:41:49 uh it's a outdated policy the hockey hall of fame you get it it's outdated it's it's an it's a museum right museums are going to be stuffy but but events don't need to be uh events at museums don't need to be is my point i think we got to get with the get with the age that should have lived forever and it's a shame that it will only live in memory i think that should have been recorded and put on even it was on the hockey night and or sorry a hockey hall of fame youtube channel like anything but i can say we should be able to go back and watch that because i'm bummed about that i'll be honest i was uh i was so nervous i was so so nervous and cj said something great cj who was there cj who was there yeah that was cool um he said something so good i was just
Starting point is 01:42:30 like i'm fucking terrified like i'm so nervous for this and he goes well that's because it means something to you so like this is a good thing this is a this is like a pressure is a privilege sort of situation like that um like i've done these before it's weird when a professional athlete is like it's game seven you're like how you feel about that no you know it's just any other game i'm like i don't fucking believe you yeah no it's not you're kidding me you get behind closed doors and then you think you think last year game seven against boston was just any other game for austin mitch willie and tavara yeah it was it was it was october game so yeah no you should be nervous for an event like that steve that's a huge deal yeah i was pretty jacked about
Starting point is 01:43:10 that that was pretty jacked yeah i got to do my own little book signing after um i did not sell as many as matt it was his event oh yes you know what that is something i'd like to point out so the moment i was asked to do this event a month and a half ago or something um i was shocked and it was it wasn't just that i was asked to do it um i worked at sportsnet for nine years sundin's publisher is simon and schuster my publisher is harper collins there's five big publishers in i think north america that are basically called like the big five wild publisher yeah there's it's it's how we got his money that's right it's like back in the day yeah maryland and sons um no it was publishing what was it it's like harper collins simon
Starting point is 01:44:04 schuster penguin random house yeah harper bazaar harper bazaar i don't know and probably uh president's choice yeah um galen west so it's the big five and they compete with each other and simon and schuster asked me to do this event for sundine in his book and i thought they had made a mistake and i reached out and i'm like hey so i have another i have a book coming out like less than a week before his or a week before his and i'm actually with harper collins and they're like yeah so would you like to do the event and what what i couldn't wrap my head around because sportsnet and they didn't even like you tweeting at people who were who worked for tsn yeah it was brutal and it was it caused strain at times in my time there publishing is
Starting point is 01:44:57 completely different completely because this is completely different traditionally in business you if you work together you combine forces reach a bigger audience what's that old phrase about ships uh rising tide you know floats all boats yeah yeah this is working together not again in in the book world it's yeah more people who are buying books means more foot traffic into indigo which means all more books are gonna sell yeah you know like it's casting would in theory be the saying a hundred percent just a bit of a yeah i don't know it's a it goes to like cable giants more than anything it's not yeah because in traditional old media is you can only watch one channel at once so you need to compete so you can but that doesn't apply to every other
Starting point is 01:45:38 business world no the the kitchener uh event that we're doing which is sold out now um kitchener public library we're doing an in conversation with craig custins he has a book as well there gonna be a fire uh i hope not okay good what is that from fireside chat oh hey you know what let's bring one yeah let's bring like one of those fake ones um craig and i don't have the same publisher and so it's just a completely different world to me and everyone's just happy no the to help the music world works the same way in that you don't have people from different labels crossing like they kind of stick their own labels in terms of creating the music but releasing music they all try to do it at bulk because when people are buying albums they'll buy
Starting point is 01:46:24 other people's albums people are listening to music they'll listen to other people's music so you want to be on big release days where everybody's listening because that's how it works you know when people are doing if if you got more people to listen to podcasts all podcasts would have more listenership i'm cheering for other podcasts the more people we get over to this the more advertisers gonna go oh yeah i guess we should advertise because that it's it's insane like in canada specifically the the slow reaction time for uh advertising to come over to podcast it's crazy and the numbers are insane in podcasting they're they're just killing radio and television and broadcast like now but you know we got 25 less of the audience that we used to have
Starting point is 01:47:08 you should spend more with our internal player that no one wants we'll do that yeah i'm beating a dead horse here with the examples but like barbenheimer barbenheimer was a revolution in people going out to the movie theater because there was multiple things to see and both the movies combined created this influx of people going to the movies and imagine if they're like no we want our own advertising separate from them no combined shit and it's all gonna go who's gonna go to the theater to watch five hours of movies in one day and millions of people said and they couldn't wrap their heads around it so like i just thought that was something that was really really cool it's a great book get his also get mine while you're there i'm on the
Starting point is 01:47:50 best sellers list i want to stay there mf um i mean what a what a warm guy what a here here's what i'll say about his book because i think this is important for leaf fans leaf fans now have a very complicated relationship with matt sundin and i think there's almost this air of abandonment um so he left without a trade and you feel how you feel about that um you know he had the right to to stay here yeah could have helped the team if you know he was traded he didn't he didn't want to go he wanted to stay and you know the team was like okay we will resign you but we need to trade you like if we resign you we're trading you um um but in the years that have followed which is now over a decade he hasn't been around it's so rare to see him at scotia bank arena it's
Starting point is 01:48:49 like that that game the other night where he literally got off stage walked out the door onto the corner of uh young and front and just peace uh he went straight to the game everyone was talking about oh man what happened to his voice i guess he wasted it on me because for the whole hour his voice sounded fine and then he got on amazon he sounded all hoarse or maybe it was just the leafs having a really good start to the game but um uh if you read the book i get the impression and i got this impression even more when i spoke to him that he'd be open to work in here he'd be open to work in here he'd be interested in having a permanent fixture with the leafs in some way shape or form but the other thing i really got to appreciate is man that dude
Starting point is 01:49:42 loves home he loves home and home of sweden and it always has been he got to a point where toronto you know felt like home he would speak to everyone in english he would think and dream in english even though it wasn't his native language. But home is where his wife and kids are. And that's Sweden right now. But I think sometime within the next five years, I would expect them to work for the team. Yep.
Starting point is 01:50:12 You'll feel a connection to this player that you lost. I want to quickly really mention that we didn't... I know you're ready to hit the extra, right? Go ahead. We didn't hit the Four Nations Cup jerseys. I haven't seen them. Do we care? Do we care?
Starting point is 01:50:27 Yeah, I think we can do it on Friday. Okay, we can do it on Friday. I care about jerseys. What was interesting is they didn't put out the promo, but they put out like a release and had four players in it and released the jerseys, I think, before that they thought that they were. So there's like a whole... Oh, they screwed up?
Starting point is 01:50:44 Yeah, I think they screwed up the... Oh, no! Yeah, but anyway, the jerseys are out there available and we can kind of rate them on Friday. How's that? Got it. Sure. Okay, so throw it out there.
Starting point is 01:50:52 Jesse, you can fire that. And don't forget, Oshawa Generals, Peterborough Peets, in Oshawa, Sunday. Sunday, Sunday. That's it. Oshawa. Doll. Oh, yeah, U2s. U2s.
