Starting point is 00:00:00 well this is our last um this is our last like live show i i none of the shows you hear from us are live but this is the last show that you'll hear from us this year that wasn't recorded on like day of we've got our world junior preview coming out friday which is christmas eve and then of course next week we're going to go back into the sdp vault and take some of the best moments that you picked on our discord page and by the way are we up to 10 000 yet i think it's 9 500 no no not yet 9 500 people over 9 000 and basically the highlight it's like the highlights channel and i guess for whatever reason these are the ones that that stood out stood out to you who pick them so if you want to be somebody who picks them just to clarify what adam said there is a
Starting point is 00:00:57 best of sdp channel on the discord and you can drop any clips in there and then i've taken some of them and they've made into a podcast that's what i said i know kind of what i fucking said i fucking said no hey um uh uh anyway so we're gonna have some fun today obviously one nhl game to talk about um but there's a whole bunch of other things happening so uh just so you for anybody programming notes for for everybody uh agent provocateur is taking this week and i believe next week off but we have some major guests lined up for the new year um i i can't yeah but you but like you know i can't believe the list you know every show on every network would say that but but but this one's that legit right yeah yeah okay no you'll never guess
Starting point is 00:01:45 oh there's some that you might but there's most you won't some of them you're like yeah holy shit yeah no alan has a pretty cool rolodex yeah like his contact list is pretty cool yeah yeah i can't because i'll ruin it i can't but now it's ridiculous uh obviously a lot of people asking about game over montreal uh yeah thankfully andrew's taking the week off um so with the pause in the nhl schedule no no he should have done episodes reacting to games that didn't happen here's what he was suggesting on our group chat do you know this oh yeah because i've got a you know i've got a group chat with jesse with every um every whatsapp group chat uh has like every show has a whatsapp group chat and so andrew was like well
Starting point is 00:02:35 listen uh the games aren't gonna happen why don't i just do a game over anyway and we're like no andrew take a minute you have two children under the age of five like just chill the point is there's gonna be 82 game overs and you're gonna have to do all 82 don't add on 82 and juniors yeah so the programming note for since he's not doing uh game over this week for montreal uh luckily he's also still gonna be working because on sunday is the world juniors and we're launching a new thing called game over juniors and you can go you can hit reminder on the youtube channel right now the uh the live video is scheduled there and as well you can go subscribe to the podcast feed so hit up your favorite podcast app and search game over international and you'll see
Starting point is 00:03:20 the game over international feed where you'll find um game over juniors that'll run under that or even easier go to sdpn.ca slash game over international and just click it from there shop sportsnet.store.store and then uh and then i know that cj show has another show coming out tomorrow jesse do we know or are they live next week are they yeah yeah so cj show comes out thursday and then tuesday next week because monday is boxing day uh no sunday's boxing day but monday's a holiday they're off yeah it's holiday so they're gonna come out tuesday and then back to thursday so they'll be still two times a week no stopping the schedule fucking maniacs do they know that the season's gonna end like mid july they're aware of that oh yeah all right yeah and
Starting point is 00:04:02 we're still three times a week yeah you're you're gonna get three episodes next week it's our normal schedule um it's just gonna be we just cheated a little bit yeah we cheated you know what man i was i was talking to somebody it was funny i was actually on an advertising call and i was talking to somebody and i said and they're like do you get any time off and i'm like well i get time off for my my other job but like this one never really stops and i said you know we're three we're gonna be three shows a week uh until mid-july at least and he said jesus you just hear the like the pause and then jesus yeah and it's you know what it's so much fun to do but you do get sort of burnt out i told you i think last episode i'm i'm i was basically fried
Starting point is 00:04:41 i've had a chance to to sleep in yeah and i feel fresh and lovely it's amazing i've been going to bed early like an adult have you yeah it's been wonderful what time you go to bed uh oh like usually or last night last night last night was 11 that's early yeah jesse what about you when you go to bed when do i oh my gosh i go to bed pretty late nowadays like 12 30 oh man i man man i miss those days but he's gotta take you that's gotta be a novelty to you like it's gotta be a luxury well because you did a freaking morning show oh yeah yeah but that's the morning show was never my natural schedule of course it was i don't think it's for anybody really but like my more of a night person i've been that way all my life and then i had to switch it for the morning
Starting point is 00:05:23 show and then now i'm kind of back into that groove where i'm like asleep at midnight like 11 30 kind of wow yeah i did do 10 the other night i went to bed because i had um do you know that they make weed beers do they oh they do are they good they are now are they the are they the weed beers that'll put you to sleep or the social weed because they're social weed uh it was i i fell asleep yeah so indica the way i was told to remember it as indica means like into bed and then t the that's how the so i stay away it's really not that hard to remember i don't know if you need like a nurse it's very hard to go with it it's hard for me oh god you guys know how bad my memories is hard for me it's fair enough wait which one of us does weed like does weed
Starting point is 00:06:05 that's how much of a novelty it is to me you can tell you really grow up doing it you said you're you're getting burned now but i find myself doing more things like before this podcast i went and i played shinny like yeah yeah today yeah today before the show yeah so uh like i found myself filling all the time just so i'm not thinking about the existential dread of society right now yeah yeah so yeah i've noticed your tick tocks picked up lately too yeah you know try trying out new things getting out there trying to not think about omicron and speaking of which uh jesse's got his list of your teams done uh today so we will get into that um i i yeah and i had homework but i did it ah i did it adam you also had homework i did and i did it
Starting point is 00:06:51 did you really yeah i don't well i also prepped the show this morning right oh i didn't know if you remember no i remembered i wrote it down okay what happens and i remembered i needed jesse to bring something and he did because i i all he he remembered but so did i yeah you were i was shocked when you texted this is the thing when you don't wake up at 4 a.m what's better than the magic of christmas yeah what's better isn't this great we talk about this in one of the best of speaking of all of our content coming out we talk about this in one of the best ofs about just sleep and schedule because adam you in particular for years it was a dread on your mental health yeah your brain and you couldn't remember sometimes it still is
Starting point is 00:07:29 sometimes no no it is i have to tell you it is nice to sit in this room uh and not be and not have already been up, you know, since four. Like, it's really nice to, you know, I woke up at 8.30 this morning. It was amazing. I feel fresh. I feel like I'm ready to do a show. It's just too bad we don't have much to talk about.
Starting point is 00:07:51 I'm kidding, this much. Now, I do want to start. I know there's a lot to talk about, but I'm going to start with the least serious of it. Oh, yeah. And that is the last game before the league unpauses itself. The Stanley Cup final of 2021. Well, in which...
Starting point is 00:08:07 In the Vegas Golden Knights. And Tampa Bay Lightning should have been. Yes. So here's the thing. Right before the game, very, very late 2021 style, John Cooper's pulled into protocol. And Alex Petrangelo and Evgeny Dodonov as well from Vegas. So it was a bit of a...
Starting point is 00:08:22 Yeah. It was a bit of Team Jamaica carrying the bobsled across the line, but they got there. The reason I'm bringing it... What? Oh, I'm sorry. Cool Runnings? You haven't seen it?
Starting point is 00:08:34 I've seen Cool Runnings. It's just a bit of an older movie. Yeah, great reference. Cool Runnings, like, it has longevity. People know Cool Runnings. They do. I am not old. I am still young and hip.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Okay. What's the better fictional team? The Jamaican bobsled team or the Trinidad hockey team from the Mighty Ducks? Well, the Trinidad team loses. Oh. Yeah, but they're fucking awesome. They are fucking awesome. Also, Cool Runnings, the Jamaican bobsled team loses.
Starting point is 00:09:05 No, wait a second. They didn't win either. Yeah, man. Come on. Yeah, I guess it would be the Trinidad hockey team. They're better? They're way better. BS?
Starting point is 00:09:14 They're BS-ed, and they have better fans, too. Yeah, honestly. They had the steel pans in the stands, didn't they? They did. I don't remember the movie that well. Yeah, they did, but they scored in the steel pans. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember that.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Yeah. I remember being a Canadian person and being completely insulted by D2. I was like, what the fuck do you mean Canada's not even a player? like you see canada once on a scoreboard that's it and they play iceland iceland also if you're america and you play iceland you should win every time yes there's like three million what are the three million people in iceland iceland population this plucky group of kids from like 366 000 and you're afraid of them from like philly yeah yeah but nope iceland so stupid more people live in mississauga than iceland yeah triple the amount of people live in mississauga than iceland
Starting point is 00:10:11 that's literally you took every available young man in iceland and put a hockey team together because that's all you'd have right it's crazy could an oshawa hockey team beat iceland yes oh i mean team iceland probably probably right probably who would be on team oshawa okay i'm gonna do that when i go home um oh that's good team oshawa all oshawa born team we should do regional teams so we should have like team scarborough versus team oakville so does do they have to be currently the way they are or is it at their peak no we're taking them we we take them right now right now right now yeah you pull them from wherever they are and they gotta play on the team and it can't be they played in oshawa it has to be they're from oshawa because otherwise
Starting point is 00:11:00 is to be like, all right, Lindros, Bobby Orr, Mark Sheva. Their Wikipedia page has to be like from that place. From Oshawa. Okay, interesting, interesting. And none of this Whitby shit. Why not?
Starting point is 00:11:13 Because people from Whitby are from Whitby. So the reason I brought up the lightning in Golden Knights game. First off, I want to mention, we brought up this season that Max Pacioretty's having. This is how, sometimes you're just like lucky to be good, good to be lucky,
Starting point is 00:11:27 that sort of thing. He just throws the puck at the net. it hits Mark Stone and goes in. So there's an assist that just happens, right? Sometimes it's rolling for you. But what I thought was interesting, and this is going to segue into our next topic, was Stamkos scoring the game-winning goal.
Starting point is 00:11:40 And I want to quote Joe Smith talking to Stephen Stamkos about the Olympics and the NHL pulling out of it. And this is what he said. He said, you grew up dreaming of winning a Stanley Cup and I've been able to accomplish that. You grew up wanting to represent your country
Starting point is 00:11:53 and win a gold medal. That's something I probably won't have a chance to do now. And that's tough. yeah that's so tough to hear this is the least serious topic well you know i i went into i went into the game to get into this and you know stamp coast has been i thought he wasn't great in the playoffs last year i really didn't uh but he has had a total revival this season and he was he was kind of a complimentary part of that team i told you he's a third line winger on that team yeah on five on five he was he was a power play specialist that's fine which is but now he's
Starting point is 00:12:28 back to being steven stamkos he's uh the tweet i saw that i was trying to find and couldn't in time is basically stamkos isn't going to the olympics and now the rest of the league is going to pay for it yeah and last night was the first indicator of that yeah he's gonna get mad and you wouldn't like him when he's mad no the thing you that's when you remember oh yeah gary roberts i forgot yeah a hundred percent because he trains with gary roberts at the gary roberts school of i'm gonna fucking kill you i think that's i think that's the name of it right isn't that yeah and the tuition is pain so we we every once in a while i remember that steven stamkos has a 60 goal season yes belt yes and like he's not he'll never be that again but he has it in him you know
Starting point is 00:13:12 he has that ability to be just an otherworldly player so the three three best shots in the league for my money are ovi matthews and stammer and it's it's i think those are the three best shots but it doesn't mean they're best for different reasons. They're best different reasons. But I think, I think when Steven Stamkos can fight, like he doesn't need to move and that's why he's going to be useful into his older years.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Because yes, because as you grow older, unless you're Jason Spets and you can still skate circles around people, you lose that mobility. You just do right. And, and what he has and what OB has, because OB doesn't move a whole lot on the power play.
Starting point is 00:13:48 Ovi has the best standing still Slapshot maybe in NHL history But definitely among forwards Standing still Maybe Al McInnes And him head to head No not even Al How shot with a wooden stick was 100 miles an hour
Starting point is 00:14:04 Hardest This is maybe a hair slower And way more accurate I would love to see Here's what they need to do With the All-Star game this year If the stars are actually going I would love to see
Starting point is 00:14:19 and OB never goes the all-star game but I would love to see a slap shot competition with wooden sticks wouldn't you? I want to say they had Al McInnes
Starting point is 00:14:28 take a slap shot at the St. Louis one yeah but he was used to that I want guys who are carbon fiber boys that have been and I love carbon fiber sticks they're way better
Starting point is 00:14:36 than wooden sticks but I want to see NHL stars of today firing pucks with a Sherwood 40 pound stick no curve no curve
Starting point is 00:14:45 just boom boom Jeffrey on just a flat piece of wood two by four let's go you know what i mean that's not gonna be pretty yeah you broke you broke two of those a season it's because you broke it over someone's head why stop there it's just a piece of cow shit petrified cow shit that's what my science teacher in grade eight said they used to play hockey with was road apples road apples love when you tell that story so ovi takes a road apple and turns it into road apple sauce and The cleanup takes 45 minutes, and we all have to watch with no commercial breaks.
Starting point is 00:15:19 And there's a goalie in net with old couch cushions as his pants. And no helmet. Yeah, who has to stand there just like... Just shaking it all off. So Tampa and Vegas. So Tampa and Vegas. Well, no, no, no. I brought up Stammer because I feel bad.
Starting point is 00:15:38 And here's the thing. Obviously, the season's on pause, not going to the Olympics. The one thing I'll say is that, and Sid Cicero tweeted this, friend of the show, Sid Cicero, tweeted this, and I agree with him. I think Bettman and Co., and I would agree with them on this, are kind of relieved that the NHL is not going. They never wanted them to go. But I also think, and let's be straight here, why do we want China, and I'm not talking about Chinese people. I'm talking about the government of China. Why would we want them to get a win on anybody's back here?
Starting point is 00:16:12 you know this is a this is a a country with enormous human rights abuses going on right now this is a now listen am i all for best on best competition on absolutely am i going to begrudge any of the canadian athletes for going absolutely not but i do think that you know if we're gonna if we're going to be people that are worried about human safety we can't be worried about it part of the time. And it's one of those things where, you know, these are multi-million dollar athletes who have endorsement deals, who are very much in the public eye. And it's as much as we want them to go to the Olympics. I also, I don't think that the NHL hates the fact that the IOC and the Olympic, like, and Beijing are not going to win out of this one. And I also think at a
Starting point is 00:17:02 certain point, at some point, sports is going to have to talk about who the IOC is taking money from right oh i mean like why stop there when's the world cup well yeah i mean listen there's going to be corruption but i mean this is pretty blatant oh yeah and and i i just i'm just that wasn't sarcastic no no those are those are the two front runners the the world cup the fifa and the uh ioc because the the world cup that's happening in qatar is the most corrupt sports thing that's ever happened maybe like they should they shouldn't be able they can't play soccer in the conditions that the world cup is going to exist in it's going to be a hundred degrees they shouldn't build a stadium there and yet they took a bunch of money and they're going to have
Starting point is 00:17:51 that but that's besides the point so one of my dreams like and this is this is the this is the duality of sports right being a fan one of my dreams is if i ever made enough money and could take a year off and this is just a dream right i would one of the things i would want to do is follow the f1 circuit around the world of course so it would be fun to do like because they do a european they do uh obviously south asian they do middle east they do north and south america um i would love to be able to do that if i wanted to do that with my girlfriend there are certain spots on that circuit i cannot take her wow you think about that right and so that's that's part of the that's part of the problem with with some of this stuff is that it's it's i it's it's hard
Starting point is 00:18:34 for me to like am i going to watch the olympics a thousand percent i'm going to watch the olympics i fucking love the olympics so in a in a way they're profiting off me right but at the same time i don't i i feel like the nhl is looking at this and they're going i yes they does the nhl do a good world cup not really in my opinion they do a shitty world cup fifa does a good world cup In terms of best on best, no, they don't. No, they don't. They do. The NHL does a.
Starting point is 00:19:04 It's fun. It's a fun exhibition. So where's your favorite place to get a hamburger? Oh, yes. Where's your favorite place? Screw it. Wendy's. You love Wendy's hamburgers.
Starting point is 00:19:13 JBC's. Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers. My favorite. Love. Jesse, favorite place to get a hamburger? Wendy's. Wendy's? Okay, so say it's Wendy's.
Starting point is 00:19:21 On the spot, Wendy's. Maybe A&M. The NHL. If Wendy's burger is the World Cup. Sure. the nhl does your high school's lunchroom version of a burger slash world cup they don't it's it sort of tastes the same but there's definitely some things missing we have the world cup at home yes yeah yeah yeah we don't need to buy this we have the world cup at home and and honestly
Starting point is 00:19:44 i'm not a fan of the nhl world cup until they fucking actually make it a world cup right but at least it's a little less odious than what we're looking at here right you can't have the nhl world cup is it's phony because it doesn't include the best players in the world like half of russia is in there because they would take local guys who aren't in the nhl guys who play in different leagues around the world you know i can't remember if there was a team czech republic but they didn't have a team slovakia no team team europe some of your things team some of europe was a thing because they couldn't gather the European players from other leagues because it's an
Starting point is 00:20:22 NHL tournament. Wasn't it Marian Gabryk's last hurrah and it was like him and his merry men? Yeah. Right, because it was Gabryk and Chara. Kopitar. But then like Kopitar as the lone Slovenian and I want to say Dreisaitl and maybe a couple other German guys.
Starting point is 00:20:38 See, I want to see Kopitar and Team Slovenia. One NHL player and like... We've seen it! It was fun! I like that. It was fun. It's like listen underdog stories are always fun i loved watching i think it was was it nikolai ehlers with team denmark at the world juniors just willing them to their first ever win uh at the world junior tournament and let's be a little uh self-aware the first time steve nash decided
Starting point is 00:21:07 to bless team canada with this presence we were all watching that like hey yeah they're sort of competitive isn't that neat yeah but what we're asking for is the olympics yeah yeah yeah i held out hope until i don't know about you guys but like until the very final moment until yesterday when they officially announcement announced it i was like okay maybe chris and elliot are all wrong and frank is wrong maybe they make a decision because i was hoping at least like hey maybe they'll leave it up to the players you know maybe they let the players decide and they get to make their own choice if they want to go and i'm just trying to convince myself that it happened but i'm so disappointed that it can't it can't take place i let it go uh i think it was sunday i was
Starting point is 00:21:50 yeah we talked about this on monday where i was i was having a depressed day just with the direction everything was going and i got home from splitting a bottle of wine with my father-in-law so i could drown my sorrows and and i saw that the olympics were basically dead for the nhl and i just like i i wish i had another so it was so sad so so that's so that part's dead but you know what they're yes there will be an all-star game no one i like locally i guess you care but like it's in vegas that's fun yeah that will be fun actually that'll be different but may do a world cup but i think by the way am i weird and thinking that the all-star game should just always be in vegas because like they always do like the pro bowl is always in hawaii right yeah yeah i just think i
Starting point is 00:22:33 I feel like American football is far more established than hockey. The NHL still needs to take it on the road. But that's why I think you should do it in Vegas. Because it's like it's a destination. Everybody goes to Vegas. And in the States, if you go to Vegas, it's like a $200 flight. They need to do a three-year residency. There you go.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Done. A three-year residency in Vegas. They want the traveling circus, though, so they can go to different cities and do the sponsors. And I'll be honest. What Vegas has, like Toronto can't even offer what Vegas has. Oh, God, no. No. So why wouldn't you make it a destination?
Starting point is 00:23:07 Every year, mid-February or whatever, or mid-March, you go to Vegas. 100%. That's why they say if you're going to a concert in Vegas, it's always better than seeing your favorite artist on the road. So if you could see – because when you have to move a stage, it limits what you can bring on the road with you. Whereas in Vegas, you get entrenched, baby. That's the stage every night.
Starting point is 00:23:27 And it's a different audience every night. What a ridiculous place. I know. but i i honestly i feel like there should be stuff that's built in there it's not a bad idea no and vegas like vegas associates with party like it's there's just so there's a whole bunch of shit there where the nhl which is a lot of the time been a no fun league or boring league could actually you know get exciting yeah it's not because like i the residency idea like if you establish it you say okay next five years in a row all-star game in vegas then it's established
Starting point is 00:23:59 people can make trips and they know each year it's happening and what and like what if one year it gets a lot of buzz and then the next year everyone's like oh i want to do this yeah you know it's a great idea and on top of that the amount of money that you would be able to do so here's the thing with with partnerships like when the nhl if you entrench yourself in a location the partnership money goes up every year whereas if you're moving it from like and i'll use columbus as an example, and I apologize to Blue Jackets fans. That's Steve's favorite All-Star game. You were at that fucking All-Star game.
Starting point is 00:24:31 I had a blast. No, of course you did, but the money you're going to make in Columbus is just different in Vegas. Right. Right? And it's not because we don't like Columbus. In fact, I don't know why everybody hates on Columbus so much. It seems like a really nice place. I was walking around like, this is fine. Yeah, there's nothing wrong with Columbus.
Starting point is 00:24:47 But my thinking is, if the goal is to make money and make it a spectacle, then Vegas has got to be your option. And if If we have a complaint about the All-Star game in comparison to the NBA All-Star game, the NBA All-Star game is always a spectacle. The NHL All-Star game, for viewers at home, is always kind of like letting hot air out of a balloon.
Starting point is 00:25:08 If you're there, it's amazing. You know what I would like? So something I did a while back was I helped out with their research and development program. The NHLs? The NHLs, yeah. Oh, wow. Did you? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:23 What was this? I've told this story a long time ago, so let me fill everyone back in. No, no, no, no, no. Wait. Just let me tell the story. Okay. So by helped out, I didn't develop anything. So what they did was they had this summer, I don't know, summit.
Starting point is 00:25:44 I don't even remember where it was. It was somewhere in Toronto. I think it was the Leafs practice facility where they invite all the top prospects for the upcoming draft to play an exhibition game where they try out new rules so they're trying to see what they like what they don't like i want to say they were trying out like hybrid icing um because this was like who was there andreas of fantasy who was there i remember this yeah i think alex galchenyuk was there and neil yakubov was definitely there uh dylan larkin might have been um so i was the dude in the um in the box and the linesman would come over and say who scored
Starting point is 00:26:25 but there was a goal and i was feeling the pressure because i looked behind me and like directly behind me it's like steve eiserman and scotty bowman and and like i'm like holy shit and uh what year is this it would have been the summer of 2011 oh so we're talking about the dark days of me trying to establish myself as anything i think i did that for like a free jacket and uh so he goes uh that goal was seven from 21 and 22 or whatever and i announced it i looked at the paper in front of me and i announced the goal and i realized i got 7 21 and 22 from the wrong team so i probably helped someone's draft stock that year that i shouldn't have and hurt someone's that i shouldn't have what i don't think they were paying attention i don't think the executives
Starting point is 00:27:15 actually cared but the sorry i tell that story to get to the research and development program yeah that's fucking nuts that's a steve bagel story i've never heard i've never heard this yeah i've never heard this story no i did not know this i did dude i was i thought i did so many odd jobs there's a book of your stories that i thought i've heard them i've never heard that one even made it yeah no no it didn't it did it i did that was one i would think would have made it i don't know man maybe i'll do another one book agent keeps asking me and i'm like i'm 33 i haven't lived enough life anyway uh so i tell all that the uh thing that they did in st louis last year where they were shooting the pucks at the targets the like from the stage that was
Starting point is 00:27:58 really cool at the beginning of it and it lasted an eternity and it went it just went way too long and it sucked everything out of the building and all i felt in the moment was they're really figuring this shit out on the fly yeah yeah do a research and development camp style event in like a summer or whatever when things are maybe a little bit more normal figure out what you want to do with the all-star game and hit me with the fucking hits baby give me the hits give fastest skater hardest shot horse i don't know like give me figure it out don't experiment with shit at the actual event rehearse rehearse a little bit act like you give a damn and put on an all-star game that is absolutely nothing but the hits yeah do some prep like guys a lot of work
Starting point is 00:28:58 do prep well then do a poor job um do be mediocre i sent you the olympics the olympics so i sent you a clip this all plays in together uh i sent you a clip that i want you to start to like at like minute 15 but we'll we're sorry minute sorry 50 seconds in but we know from yesterday and we know that from steve's uh biggest fans um uh keith olbermann that connor hellebuck is not a fan of the nhl pausing okay and i'm not making this about keith olbermann don't worry okay um i was like i didn't see this now the nba it looks like the raptors game as of a few minutes ago is is can there is paused oh it is on the raptors bulls game yeah okay good um but i think here's what i want to say and this is i think adam silver has summed up in the best way how we should be looking
Starting point is 00:29:51 at this going forward. And I want to play this because Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, was asked about pausing the schedule, a la what the NHL has done. And then I want to talk about the NHL pause. But let's get into what Adam Silver said on ESPN yesterday. Right. And I mentioned that we're seeing a spike in COVID-19 cases around the world, but we're also seeing it in the NBA with upwards of 80 players testing into the COVID protocols with Christmas Day rapidly approaching. So are there any plans right now to stop or pause the season to allow for the spread to slow? No plans right now to pause the season. We've, of course, looked at all the options. But frankly, we're having trouble coming up with what the logic
Starting point is 00:30:37 would be behind pausing right now as we look through these cases, literally ripping through the country right now putting aside the rest of the world um i think we're finding ourselves where we sort of knew we were going to get to for the past several months and that is that this virus will not be eradicated and we're going to have to learn to live with it and i think that's what we're experiencing in the league right now so let's pause that to be clear so sorry i want to clarify something when i said good that the game was postponed it's not because i'm a fraidy cat or whatever that some people are going to paint this as oh you're afraid of the sniffles it's that it's the bulls against literally not the rapid well yeah yeah so so here's here's here's what
Starting point is 00:31:24 my thinking is with this you know i think i think adam silver nails it you know we we had this mentality when we started in the pandemic that if we were if we you know two weeks to flatten the curve if we you know stayed indoors stayed away from each other all the things that we did there was a little there was a piece of the community and this piece that's sort of implanted in everybody's head that somehow some way someday covid wouldn't exist anymore and covid is not going to not exist is it going to be uh less severe sure are we going to have like a pill there's a pill out there that pfizer is working on and there's actually canadian company that's working on an inhaler that will treat the actual disease so here's the thing vaccines aside we
Starting point is 00:32:09 don't have a way to actually treat covid no you know like we could treat cancer we could treat other things we can't treat covid yet but we might get to the point where we can and then all this stuff sort of goes away it's like well take your inhaler stay home for a couple weeks that whatever it is medicine's an amazing thing you know what i only found out this past year my mom had tuberculosis wow i did not know that well yeah there's a vaccine for that now yeah that so so here's the thing i think what we need to do and i don't it's not that i disagree with the nhl pause i want to get to the nhl pause in a second what we need to do is shift our focus from how do we stop this to how do we live with this and our our our the thing was last year when
Starting point is 00:32:53 we didn't have any vaccines and we didn't have any way to soften the i don't know if that's the right way to put it but but blunt the the effects of covid on a human being without a vaccine you know we did the bubbles and everything that made sense because it's like we're trying to keep this out until we can figure out what the fuck to do here well now we've got a vaccine you know we're all getting our boosters up here in canada i know in the states you can you can be triple vaxxed and whatever beyond all that our job now needs to be how do we get through this so if the raptors are all checking into protocol here well i understand the need to be extremely safe but at a certain point if people are asymptomatic just like you can be asymptomatic with other other viral infections
Starting point is 00:33:34 and I'm not trying to liken this to the flu or something because we've seen people who are deniers essentially be like, it's just the flu. It's not. We have to learn and deal with how to deal with this just being a part of our lives. And we're getting there with medicine. I don't think we're quite there yet,
Starting point is 00:33:52 but that's gotta be the focus going forward. And I think Adam Silver nailed it. He said, we can pause the league, but COVID's not going anywhere. That's not gonna stop transmission within the players or within society at large. it's just not right these guys and a rash madani made this this point on um tim and friends the other day and i thought it was so fucking smart he said okay so they're gonna go home the league's
Starting point is 00:34:15 pause they're gonna go home what are they gonna do they're gonna hang out with family they're gonna hang out with friends yeah they're gonna do what everybody else is doing i think that's ultimately what they were trying to protect to be honest what do you mean like they they didn't want to get trapped on the wrong side of the border yes and that for christmas especially and i get that yeah the nba is less concerned about that there's only one canadian team and also christmas is different they don't have a break it's a big day actually it's a big sporting day for them the nhl just doesn't have that so i also don't really think it was a safety thing to be honest well and and so the nhl kind of posed it as that a little bit and i think a lot of people are like
Starting point is 00:34:55 great i'm so glad they're pausing it they're pausing the season for four days guys yeah yeah it's december the 22nd now they're playing games on the 27th on monday i believe so yeah and their biggest thing is to make it to the winter classic that's what uh elliot and jeff on uh the 32 thoughts podcast were hammering that home because they just need to make it to the winter classic and protect minnesota and dallas and make sure that those rosters are just competent enough to play it because it's such a big sponsorship event and at the end of the day that's all that's driving this do you remember that quote what is the quote the from an unnamed player of another team what is it he's like well if it's so important uh then bubble wrap them pause them
Starting point is 00:35:36 right which is what essentially they've done because their games are done and they're going to come back and they're going to play that game because they need to fulfill the sponsorships the nhl is going to find a way to get in these 82 games sure the season's going to keep going that's part of the reason why i'm just sort of shutting down and enjoying this little break because I know an already condensed schedule is about to get even more squishy. Well, and I have a hard time believing that they're going to just take February off.
Starting point is 00:36:04 No, no, no. Those three weeks will be used to make up these games right here. Yeah. Those will all be games. Yeah. But like, how many I just I have a hard time picturing what February is going to look like, but the point is they're going to play all 82.
Starting point is 00:36:20 Yeah, of course they are. They've missed two seasons of, well, one and a half seasons of of gate revenue you know you can't just give that up you can't give up the tv money that the the nhl is missing they're trying to get back on schedule they're trying to hit revenues they need to play through this and also that's what they're going to do and as a society at large we cannot continue to um uh literally take people's livelihoods away from them right we have to find a way through this but you know i understand i understand the the dangers you don't
Starting point is 00:36:50 have to lecture me on that i get it but we also our job as humans has always been how do we overcome this so that's the question now how do we overcome and live with this and i don't think we have all the answers yet but i definitely think that's the focus we need to be focused on that we need to be looking at that so to to finish this conversation this this quote-unquote pause that is for player safety yeah i don't take that for a second i think it's obviously people want to be like i feel bad for Ilya Mikheyev here's a guy who hasn't played all season he's in protocol now so if he was going to spend Christmas somewhere he's a fucking protocol like it sucks right and so if you're in protocol you're isolated man you're not going to see your family even if you're at home that
Starting point is 00:37:30 sucks and and so the Ilya Mikheyev especially man talk about a snake bite oh and you know who got the hell out of dodge at the right time Karol Semyonov as long as you're talking about the yeah that dude I don't I don't know if he saw a trend or whatever but he's like yeah I'm gonna go back to russia and at least he got there yeah you know it's a crazy thing with the leafs and the pause that cj brought up on the cj show with cj and julian mitch marner who's who was injured pre-pause you got to spend at least 10 games on ltir mitch marner is gonna be healthy but not be able to come off of ltir because they need to get rid of that because they just don't fulfill the 10-game obligation.
Starting point is 00:38:11 I think it has. They're changing that? I think that has. Because he just said he still needs to fill the 10-game obligation. Come on. Right, but today's truth
Starting point is 00:38:19 is not necessarily tomorrow's. Exactly. So is there new information? I am trying to... Let me try to find it, but I'm almost positive I read it that they're going to...
Starting point is 00:38:29 Because that's unfair. That's crazy. It's unfair. You want to keep stars like Mitch Marner out of the league. Why would you want that? Who does that benefit?
Starting point is 00:38:36 He's injured, Adam. Oh, yeah. So he needs to spend the time on LTI. So what the NBA has, while Steve's looking it up, the NBA has the 10-day contract for what? Yeah, so the NBA instituted this new thing that's just taken the league by storm. It's so cool. So for every player that goes on the COVID protocol, you can sign any guy to fulfill that roster spot.
Starting point is 00:38:56 And what do they call it? There's a title for it, like egregious harm. There's a specific name for what that player falls under the category. It's now in the new CBA or whatever. but it's it's opened it up for all these guys who are on the g on g league teams and and on european leagues uh around basketball to just get a shot at playing in the nba because of covid so all all these guys are just trying to get their first shot at the nba because all these rosters are decimated and you're seeing um a guy like isaiah thomas who who's been out of the league
Starting point is 00:39:27 for like two two years get a shot with the lakers because they just need a body and they're like okay you got experience come join us so i don't i don't know if it's gonna be we see this uh a player who would never have a shot at the nba all of a sudden get a shot with a roster and then now he's an everyday nba player forever but if a guy gets a shot because of covid and then teams see that oh this guy might be good yeah that's a fantastic thing to come out of all of this it's pretty cool a guy who's never been given a shot just a random joe schmoe is now given a shot and now he gets to be on an nba team i love that so much fun so much there was a guy who played for dallas last night who he came after the game he was like i didn't even know what place they were
Starting point is 00:40:05 calling he's like i just he's like but i've been playing long enough that i could figure it out he's like you know a pick and rolls a pick and roll and like he got seven points and i think five assists like he was amazing he wasn't on the team 48 hours ago wow why doesn't the league like why doesn't the nhl do that it's it's a it's a fun little rule that they've instituted the last couple days so it's uh kevin mcgrann uh tweeted just learned that if he's healthy mitch marner can play leafs next game despite being on ltir and missing only six games the four missed because of covid count toward the 1024 requirement of ltir apparently it was the case last year too i just didn't encounter it 1024 is uh 10 games and 24 days that's the minimum you got to spend
Starting point is 00:40:50 on ltir so that's that's great that the league fixed that also i mean enough with the 24 days come on no no it makes sense for uh but if you're positive the season that has to go away right yeah which which it does yeah it's it it's ltir is easy enough to abuse yeah legally um but you can also the 10-day contract is something nhl needs to adopt but we need to do that yeah oh yeah it'd be cool well i was i was thinking on the way here like okay so it's a more condensed schedule um guys are going in and out of protocol you're gonna need more depth uh it's not necessarily a 10-day contract but like you know who would be potentially useful and could benefit from this is josh jose oh there's yeah i mean he is tearing it up he's been amazing with the marley he's been
Starting point is 00:41:41 playing well the marley season is paused um if there's a bunch of forwards in protocol or injured or suspended i mean there's a guy he doesn't have an nhl contract no he doesn't so they would have to sign him so he's got and he said he's committed to staying with the leafs organization he wants to be here as to how this works but i think if they do sign him he'd be placed on waivers so yeah like that's gotta go uh i don't understand well he would be claimed because he's got nine goals and six assists in 19 games not necessarily no he'd be claimed but like come on he's been have you seen some of the highlights they would claim he's good yeah he's good um um but like i think it was evgeny dabakov years ago he was in europe signed a contract with i
Starting point is 00:42:26 think it was detroit and then had to stick with the islanders and the islanders stole him and it's like but i signed the contract with detroit and he almost didn't report but then he had a good season like imagine i remember imagine you interviewed with td bank and you're like i'm going to be a teller for td bank and bemo was just like you're a teller for us now because once you sign the contract you're open to everybody yeah and also our bank is nowhere near the bank that you thought you were going to work at you were going to work across town like what the fuck this isn't what i agreed to at all yeah well we're going to pay you the salary that yeah but you don't understand this isn't what i agreed yeah i think again a lot of these rules that they had i think
Starting point is 00:43:05 they're archaic anyway but i think the pandemic is going to force some change which is probably good i honestly i you know how i feel about this i i want teams to spend more money on players So more opportunities And the PA will be 100% for this It's the ownership that's not Oh I didn't know Alan Walsh joined the show Well you know what's fucking funny now You know what's hilarious now
Starting point is 00:43:28 Is that when I talk about my views On what the cap could be and should be People are like you're getting that from Walsh I'm like dude I've been saying this for 6 years And by the way Walsh is right He's right Oh my god
Starting point is 00:43:43 Drink more of that water as a general manager myself one thing that i'd like to see the nhl uh move during covid is the 50 contract limit because i'm trying to sign guys and like i'd like that limit to be adjusted if guys go on covid protocol they don't maybe if they don't count against the 50 contract limit and then you can get some extra bodies within the organization this is why you need the like what's wrong with two two weeks two week deal why not 14 day a p i don't know pto would that fall under pto sure i don't know they don't have do they have in-season ptos i've never seen it i don't think that works i don't think i've ever but like you would think if any team would would
Starting point is 00:44:23 have taken advantage of that it would have been the leaps oh yeah if they could you think they got the money yeah i would like to see something like a 14-day contract that doesn't count against your 50 contracts they sort of did that with buddy who has awful twitter pressed uh brandon pressed he uh it's i couldn't remember i think that's a pretty apt description yeah he's in his twitter's up but uh he uh no he was on a pto but then they like kept him for a month and he just practiced with the team just hung around but he didn't play that's like um you need guys who can play tukarask tukarask is in boston all right tukarask is on the boston bruins right now but he isn't on the boston bruins it's such a farce it's it's an enormous practice like by the way
Starting point is 00:45:08 it looks like brandon press has deleted his twitter oh good yeah merry christmas everyone Anyway, so the Boston Bruins got a free goalie in March. Like, that's going to be fascinating because they signed Allmark to big money and Swayman might even be the better goalie. And then they're going to add Rask to that mix. Get out of here. Get out of here.
Starting point is 00:45:30 They're going to have Tuukka Rask and Andrew Raycroft in the same broadcast booth. So frustrating. So frustrating. So the Calgary Arena deal seems to have fallen through for now. and i want to i want to talk about this because i think this is super interesting now you got to remember adam did you work in calgary so the the uh the way this has gone so far for context has been uh uh the flames literally tried to interfere with a municipal election
Starting point is 00:45:58 yep and threatened had threatened to move multiple times knowing full well that they were never going to move because it's a profitable city and the nhl would never allow that they'd be like no you're not fucking moving but um and i and i had i know a lot of people really respect calgary upper management but i actually thought the way they handled that that election in that arena deal initially was super gross oh but was enormously now the reality of politics is that politics are super gross and so the interesting thing is they tried to get mayor nenshi not elected he got elected by like a slight margin and it was his like third straight term And then they were able to work out a deal to get Scotiabank Saddledome torn down, new arena put up.
Starting point is 00:46:46 Isn't that how yucky politics and business is? Did you want to say something? I've avoided this entire story since it broke yesterday. Can you explain it to me from the beginning and what's happening here with the mayor? So let me read you the Calgary Flames statement on this, and we'll walk through this, okay? You're going to start with them? I'll start with the Flames, yeah. Because the mayor's response came later.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Oh, I thought the mayor was first. no oh interesting yeah yeah yeah uh or at least you know it really doesn't matter one or the other but i think we start with the flames organization because this is what they said this thing in response to numerous media inquiries uh calgary sports and entertainment corporation provides the following update uh uh uh when agreements were first executed back in december 2019 the parties agreed to a cost-sharing arrangement of 50 50 with respect to the design and construction of the new event center. In July 2021, with these costs increasing to $608.5 million, the city informed that they were not able to fund their 50% under the terms of the framework, which would
Starting point is 00:47:47 have resulted in termination at that time. Instead, the Calgary Sports CSEC, which is the Calgary Sports and Entertainment, agreed to fund a disproportionate share, $321 million, to the cities, $287.5 million, and agreed to accept the risk of reasonable future design and construction cost increases related to the event center in spite of the original 50-50 agreement. The most recent cost estimates place the total cost of the event center at $634 million, which means that the CSEC would be responsible for an additional $25.5 million of that cost. The resulting cost sharing would be $346 million for CSEC and then $287.5 million for the city, and the CSEC would continue to be responsible for further cost increases related to the
Starting point is 00:48:39 event center. Unfortunately, there are now $19 million in new cost items related to infrastructure and climate being insisted upon by the city, for which they're seeking an additional $10 million in funding from the CSEC. While the CSEC was prepared to move forward in the face of escalating construction costs and assume the unknown future costs, the CSCC is not prepared to fund the infrastructure and climate costs that were introduced by the city
Starting point is 00:49:03 following our July agreement and were not included in the $608.5 million and are not included in the current cost estimate of the $634 million. So essentially, they're saying, hey, listen, you're raising the prices on us here and you're putting in new things for us to follow when that was not a part of the original agreement in 2019.
Starting point is 00:49:24 Now, Elliot Friedman tweeted this, and I think this is an important part of the entire thing because I don't want to read the whole thing to you. While not ideal for our Calgarians nor competitively for the Flames, the people of Calgary should understand that nevertheless, the CSEC's intentions are to remain at Scotiabank Saddledome. So there's no threat to leave yet. Yeah. Now, let's talk about, because they're not going to leave. They pulled that shit before. Everybody knows. And here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:49:47 One thing I know about Calgarians and Albertans in general is they hate government spending. they hate paying tax for a government to spend it and they get really pissed off when billionaires are saying hey can we take 30 or 40 million more they fucking hate that shit and and i just know that from living there it's a it's a cultural thing there they don't like it so here's uh calgary's new mayor uh jody gondek who did not negotiate the original deal in 2019 but jody uh is the she was a counselor i think counselor at the time and now is the mayor yeah uh this is a six-part thread, so go with me. She said, today I spoke with Murray Edwards, primary shareholder of CSCC, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Group. He informed me of the Flame's intention to pull the
Starting point is 00:50:30 plug on the event center deal. Why? Here's what I know. The deal struck in 2019, envisioned a $550 million deal with costs split equally between the CSCC and the city. In addition, the city provided land and 90 of the demolition of the dome x uh demolition of the dome excess food site remediation and levies total city contribution 275 million plus 22.4 million 297.4 million plus land so they're giving the land the land's worth a lot of money by the way i know that area i used to live there at 10th and 10th uh southwest you live in calgary sorry 10th and 1st southeast is where i lived and it's it's an area called victoria park and it's it was a it was a really rundown shitty neighborhood that they were turning around when i lived there and i lived in an old
Starting point is 00:51:16 cigarette factory i remember that and and i remember that well that's where the that's where the new arena is going whenever it goes in and that was eight years ago right so eight or nine years ago now um plus the value of the land i supported the deal this is jody the mayor in 2021 calgary sports and entertainment asked uh to make changes to the above deal cmlc cmlc removed as development manager. Both parties added $12.5 million to overrun and the city added $10 million to management costs. So the total value plus land is 307.4 million plus land. I did not support that deal. Since I was elected mayor, my office has been working with them to mitigate additional costs. Two costs were identified, climate mitigation, which is protecting the environment
Starting point is 00:52:06 because it's right by a river, by the way, and $4 million in road and sidewalk right-of-way issues, running the cost of $12.1 million. The city came to the table to assist with $6.4 million in roadways, leaving $9.7 million for the flames. Based on this gap, the CSEC informed me that they are walking away from our deal. On a project worth over $650 million, to have one party walk away over 1.5% of the value is staggering. I wanted Calgarians to be the first to know, is i'm disappointed so so what she is saying is it's 10 million bucks that they're walking over away from what the flames are saying is that it's somewhere in the neighborhood of depending upon what you believe 30 to 50 million right because they're saying we're paying more here we're paying
Starting point is 00:52:50 more there no matter who you believe but they already agreed on that that yeah they already agreed on that the 30 million versus 10 million shouldn't even be that both those numbers are little numbers so here's why this is so stupid oh god here's why this is so stupid jesse just nailed it and this is why when i was reading it this morning like you guys gotta be fucking kidding me but this is the most murray edwards calgary flame sports and entertainment i've ever seen the flames are like this oh yeah this is how they do and murray edwards is what do they say about billionaires that the cheapest people on earth um they genuinely make everything difficult the flames organization makes everything difficult i'm not saying city council's easy
Starting point is 00:53:30 but if you're talking about 30 to 50 million dollars let's say their estimates are as high as that yeah you're gonna make that in the first year that that arena run there is absolutely no reason that they need to do this but they're trying to grind 15 to 20 million dollars out of city council and the mayor's doing the right thing here it's the punk test yes yep new mayor in town let's see what we can get and of course there's cost over and so you look at like look at just one thing lumber yeah it's like up 300 percent in price since 2019 there are going to be cost overruns in a renovation the uh i can't my neighbor wanted to get like a new fence and it's not a very big yard and he was quoted like 14 000 like it's because you can't you can't you
Starting point is 00:54:17 Can't get wood. Can't get wood anywhere. Like, it's extraordinarily... Just be Italian and fill your backyard with concrete. Yeah, that number, that's so shocking hearing this, because it's like, okay, I'm going to buy this car in cash, and it costs $50,000. And then the dealership comes to you, and they're like,
Starting point is 00:54:37 oh, okay, it's overrun by, I don't know, 500 bucks. And you're like, no, I'm out. Like, no, throw in the 500 bucks, Calgary. So here's the other thing. unfortunately so here's a line from the calgary flames thing there are now 19 million in new cost items that are being insisted upon by the city so the 19 million you have it the city is is is offering to pick up six or seven million of that yeah so it's not 19 million it's dishonest it's and they're seeking 10 million in funding from the csec so we're talking about a nothing bridge
Starting point is 00:55:06 to gap here um how many players in the nhl have a cap hit larger than that well yeah and listen if the if the flames ownership pays 346.5 million and the city pays 287.5 million let's just say that's the that's the way it should be you're lucky it's that little you're like this is the fucking calgary flames guys all arenas should be privately funded you shouldn't go to the fucking government just okay build your sports complex does td tower like does the td tower in toronto does the bmo tower and did they uh did they ask the city for funding on that maybe no they probably did no i mean i'm sure they did the city probably told them to fuck off oh they probably asked you know these condos all the condos going up in downtown toronto does the
Starting point is 00:55:51 city pay for that no god i hope no of course not and in fact the in toronto the city is now making developers pay for the change in sewage lines because the sewage pipes are 100 years old and And they can't handle all the sewage. Don't a lot of these companies also get tax breaks, though? A thousand percent. Calgary gave them the land for free. They just gave them a plot of land. That land is worth $20 to $30 million on its own.
Starting point is 00:56:17 It's acres of land in downtown Calgary, right below the river. Are you kidding me? And what the mayor outlined at the bottom of her tweet when she said, this is a $650 million deal, and you're stressing about $10 million? 1.5%. And we're covering some of that for you already? Come on, Calgary. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:39 Well, and so here's the thing. This is going to happen. If you're a Flames fan, you're worried about this. It's just going to take an extra year. It's going to happen. Deal's going to happen. It's already started. If Murray Edwards were to walk away from that right now, he's probably lost 50 million bucks just in like architecture costs and all the other shit.
Starting point is 00:56:56 They're not going to not do this. But the negotiating style for the Calgary Flames has always been, they call it brinkmanship. It's like how the Soviets used to negotiate. They'd start at, we're going to fire nuclear weapons at you. And then they'd walk it back. It's called brinkmanship negotiations. Trump did that too. You start at the worst case scenario and then you walk it back.
Starting point is 00:57:19 You walk it back. You walk it back. And that's what the Flames organization always does. And you don't have to love how the sausage is made. It's still a delicious sausage. We love the Calgary Flames. We love the NHL. Business is dirty.
Starting point is 00:57:31 Politics are dirty. This will get worked out. There's no way. And if it doesn't, they're fucking idiots. He's shooting himself in the foot. Over $30 million. Or $50 million. Or $80 million.
Starting point is 00:57:43 Even if it's $100 million. Who cares? Owners are generally the worst part of most teams. Sometimes they're great. I like Larry Tannenbaum. I do. He's so nice. Even the good ones who you don't hear much about.
Starting point is 00:57:56 I don't have a Larry Tannenbaum jersey. no it's just sometimes i get drunk at games and i go you're doing a great job um which is the thing you said which is the thing i said to larry tenenbaum at a playoff game that they won did you actually do that yeah haven't i have i probably i know that steve i don't remember that story on the show yeah you said he's doing a great job i've i've heard you tell that on this show okay so i was um i don't know i was not having a great time in my head around the time of the leafs washington capital series i had hosted their um maple leaf square party before that game and uh like almost passed out on stage i don't
Starting point is 00:58:40 know if i've ever talked about that but anyway so i had i was so nervous during the game that i had a couple beers that ended up just knocking me on my ass like usually i'd be able to handle it much better but i was obliterate and um i was walking to meet someone and on the way i saw larry tannenbaum and i patted him on the shoulder and i go you're doing a great job i'm lucky i wasn't tackled and thrown out of the building yeah then what did he say to you nothing he kept walking i'm sure he loves being touched i'm sure he does hello strange man thank you for touching me and you know what's funny i'm pretty sure like within 30 seconds of that a sweet little old lady
Starting point is 00:59:20 walked up to me and was not even old but a sweet lady walked up to me and was like oh you're Dangle I'm Ann Brown I'm Connor's mom oh that's cool and then Tyler Bozak scored in overtime fuck yeah and then they lost but whatever
Starting point is 00:59:35 I had fun I'm Ann Brown that's very sweet I'm Ann Brown I'm Connor's mom and I was just like you're the nicest person I've ever met I miss Bo's light year to the rescue but now there's muzz light year to the rescue where you skate by the bench i was like oh sweet i can still use the gloves i bought these at disney they were very expensive you really you really shoved that one in muzz light year fits better it does but like i know you only
Starting point is 01:00:04 did it because you didn't you wanted the gloves to i wanted to use the gloves um i wanted them uh upper deck and the uh premier hockey federation which is formerly the nwhl um have announced that they have a multi-year partnership and uh the upper deck company will be the exclusive licensed manufacturer of physical and digital phf trading cards and by digital trading cards what do they think they mean that's right nfts motherfucker um uh the industry leaders will provide the first ever women's hockey trading cards for release during the 22-23 PHF season. That's really cool.
Starting point is 01:00:45 This is the sort of thing I've been asking for forever. Like, little kids do learn more about hockey through video games, through hockey cards. What's the holdup? Well, Upper Deck actually, and I had these, by the way. They produced women's hockey cards as early as 97-98. I think I had some. I had the Olympic ones.
Starting point is 01:01:05 I had Cassie Campbell, I had Ailey Wickenheiser. I think I did too. Nancy Droulet I think I had a whole bunch of them. I'd have to go back and look. I might still have them. I think I gave you all my hockey cards. Oh, maybe I have yours. Anyway, it's very cool that they're doing that and I think you're going to see
Starting point is 01:01:21 more and more of that happening but we just figured that was worth the shout out. There's been some dark shit lately. Yeah. Now we got some not dark shit. Here's some hockey cards. Here's some good hockey card news. Ken Reed's going to be over the moon. I'm sure he will be. And he'll tell a story about the 80s.
Starting point is 01:01:37 oh gosh honestly the next time we have one I'm gonna be like Ken tell me how the 80s were better go ahead let me tell you about Knuckles the Chuckle Smith
Starting point is 01:01:46 played 800 games in the Nova Scotia Senior Men's League 4,000 penalty minutes an hour an hour the only man to be allowed
Starting point is 01:02:05 to carry a gun on the ice anyway sorry okay should we do the press conference sure yeah what do you want to do my list oh your list fuck all right let's do your list okay this is the jesse blake you're fucking done list pack your shit it's essentially what it is all right so jesse explain this list okay let me uh let me pull it up first so i've gathered here today a list of teams that are not going to make the playoffs i'm guaranteeing it i'm writing it in stone and i'm gonna give them the award of your team will not make the playoffs award for context in the last full season in the nhl 98 points made the playoffs in the east 90 points made the playoffs in the west we're going
Starting point is 01:02:56 to split the difference okay for the purpose of this exercise and say that 94 points okay we'll get you in the playoffs that's a huge discrepancy yeah yeah 98 to 90 so yeah let's put the difference 94 ish yeah now the way i looked at it was i i did all the maths here and for every team where i don't think the math can math i've given you this award that you're not going to make the playoff so i'm going to run through this the stats and then you guys are the committee and if they deserve the award hand them the award and the award is you're done the award is hey try again next year okay so it's got to be unanimous yes yes yeah that's they do not get the oscar number one on the list the arizona coyotes they are currently 6 21 and 2 are they done
Starting point is 01:03:46 they have 14 points 30 second in the nhl uh 22 points out of a playoff spot to make the playoffs at our 94 point pace they'd have to go 38 and 15 we don't have to spend a lot of time here uh their save percentage is an 888 that's 31st in the league uh does the math's math here will the arizona coyotes make the playoffs i'm gonna say no sorry arizona arizona coyotes guys are done they've got a they've got a better chance of getting a new arena oh gosh that's probably that's fact they currently don't have an arena for like the next two years they would take that trade that'd be the best trade they've ever made they got a better chance of knowing where they're gonna play next year than they do of uh of making the playoffs that's mean you're mean who on the
Starting point is 01:04:38 arizona coyotes since they are receiving this award their team is done and we are sorry coyotes fans who on the team would you like to walk up and receive this award phil kessel i'm forcing him to get up in front of people yeah phil kessel who is third on their team in points with 17 five goals 12 assists here's the award your team is done clayton keller by the way uh having a decent season 22 points in 29 games next up on the list the montreal canadians they are 7 21 and 3 that's 17 points 8th in the atlantic they are 16 points out of a playoff spot to make the playoffs they must have a record equivalent to 40-11.
Starting point is 01:05:23 Could the Montreal Canadiens do that, or do they receive our Your Team Has Done award? They're not going to make the playoffs, and Jeff Petrie has to accept the award so he can shit on the entire coaching staff again
Starting point is 01:05:38 publicly as he accepts it. Vous avez terminé. I'm going to look it up on my phone. You are done. We're getting to a little more interesting and controversial. These are easy ones so far. The Seattle Kraken. They are currently 28th in the NHL.
Starting point is 01:05:56 They have 23 points. 10, 17, and 3. They would have to go 36 and 16 to get that 94 point. Are they done? They're done. I mean, expansion teams, you had a great run. Yeah. man you're not supposed to be good honestly i think seattle i think they missed a great
Starting point is 01:06:21 opportunity to really make a competitive team this year i i know they weren't banking on philip grubauer being injured and not playing well but like they could have been really good and still had a great future but they intentionally sucked for no reason i i don't like i really don't like the way they went about this even with the team they have they should still be better than this they cannot stop a beach ball which is the one thing i thought they'd be good at yeah that'd be the one yeah they are uh second worst in the league in goals against 107 goals against and as to further steve's point they are last in the league in safe percentage 876 is the goaltending they are getting this year the worst awful the worst trade in seattle crack in history uh vtech
Starting point is 01:07:06 vanacek for a second round pick yep why did they give him back for that pick because they thought they had their guys take the goalie well and you know cap space was so important to them but they signed philip grubauer as a free agent and it's been awful all right next up on the list the ottawa senators they currently have 20 points they're 30th in the nhl they're only up though 13 games out of a playoff spot to reach that 94 point threshold they'd have to go 38 and 16 is there a world for the ottawa senators make the playoffs or do they get our award for being done i think you get one andrew hammond per generation and they've already they've already used theirs up yeah yeah i think it's they're they're so far nobody's disagreed with my list nope next up
Starting point is 01:08:02 new jersey devils oh so underratedly bad 25 points on the year they're 10 5 10 15 and 5 coldest team in the league i saw yesterday yep one eight and one in their last 10 they are for goals they have 81 goals on the year and they're 101 goals against which is just like a couple goals behind seattle who's in last um to make the playoffs they'd have to go 38 and 15 is there any world where they reach that 94 points or is the new jersey devils sadly They're done. Are they done? Done.
Starting point is 01:08:43 Bye. Get the fuck out of here. All right. All right. I think we're spending a lot of time on teams that have no fucking shot. Well, that's the thing that I'm pointing out here. We have, I think I have four teams. What, did I write this?
Starting point is 01:08:58 Or five teams from the east here and two from the west. Like, there's a lot of teams who are done. Buffalo Sabres, 38 and 15 is what they'd have to go. They're currently also 10, 15, and 5. If New Jersey's done, Buffalo's the identical record, I assume they're done. Put them on the list. Congrats on being less as bad as we thought you would be.
Starting point is 01:09:20 You're done. Now, this is our first one that I think is up for debate. The Philadelphia Flyers are currently four points out of a playoff spot. But they are 12, 12, and 5. They're 500. They have 12 points. They'd have to go around 33 and 20 to reach 94 points. because remember 500 in the nhl is only 82 points that's not getting you there can philadelphia play
Starting point is 01:09:45 like 12 games above 500 for the rest of the season to squeak into the playoffs i don't think it's going to happen just based on their coaching and the players and seeing what i've seen so far this season and i think the philadelphia flyers deserve a your team has done it so they'd have to go basically win two out of every three for the rest of the year and have the teams above they're only four points out like you look at four points and be like oh you make up four points in like three nice. They need goaltending, though. They need defense. Yeah, sorry.
Starting point is 01:10:15 Carterhart's good, but they're a mess. And didn't they just fire their coat? Funny you say they need defense. They're currently 27th in the league and goal's four. And goal's four. And goal's four. And goal's scored. They're 27th.
Starting point is 01:10:31 They're not even scoring. And that's one of those things that's hard to just be like, oh, we're good offensively now. oh i don't want to write off a team but i mean jesus the caps the penguins the rangers uh is carolina in that division oh i don't um there's the first one in a few episodes um and if anyone's gonna make a comeback in that division it's the islanders but they're so far back
Starting point is 01:11:05 yeah I'm gonna say what are you nuts you're done Adam yeah I think they're done and I think it's just because sometimes it's not that they don't have the talent they clearly do I just sometimes you
Starting point is 01:11:20 can't put it together and I think they've had a messy year I think they're a mess and they've been messy for a while by the way oh and Columbus is there too what do you what oh man that four ah man that four-headed monster at the top of that division is staying there and not moving that that gets me to the next team on the list the new york islanders i think it's about time we give the new york islanders the your team has done award
Starting point is 01:11:53 i'm so fucking mad at them and we say pick it up next year lou so mad at them the penguins are You're making me look bad on my projections. Penguins are fourth in the Metro. Yeah. The Islanders are 17 points back. They are currently 11 points out of the second wildcard. Oh, that's a long way. They'd have to go an equivalent of 37 and 19 to reach 94 points.
Starting point is 01:12:18 Oh, yeah. They're last in the division. They have 57 goals for, which is the second worst. In the entire National Hockey League, they have 57 goals. That is 31st in the league. The New York Islanders can't score. Yo, Barry Trotz, you can't defend your way out of 57 goals. They're trying, and it's not working.
Starting point is 01:12:45 They're 10th in the league in safety. They're less than two goals a game. They're getting 913 goaltending. That's good. That's very good. They're getting 913 goaltending, and they're last in their division. They have 22 points. So here's what the Islanders need to do.
Starting point is 01:12:59 They need to call Montreal and be like, what do you want for Tyler Toffoli? What do you want for... Who's the other guy that's struggling there that just signed? Hoffman. Hoffman's good for 30 goals on a normal year. Like, just bring somebody in
Starting point is 01:13:14 who can support Barzal and Bailey. I think you treat it as we're a good team, but this is a lost season. You cut the dead wood and you're done. That's an award. invested almost nothing in their scoring and they've gotten away with it but now they're not getting away with it yeah but also you try to chalk it up to okay this is an unusual season uh we're gonna be able to trade chara for a gross package something we do not deserve for him
Starting point is 01:13:41 we started 13 games on the road and we come back next year and we try to get stronger islanders fans i think that's a consensus from the awards committee and i want to congratulate the new york islanders on making the 2022 playoffs shut up no this is their super power their nhl 22 x factor is they have to win 40 games yeah this is people doubting them they have to go 39 and 37 and 19 equivalent no but by us blessing them with they're done they're now about to go on the hottest streak in the league i'd love to see it but i don't see it happening they have to win well you'd have to win out of every yeah you'd have to the hole is too big unfortunately it's crazy they could go on a run and be really good the islanders have acquired andrew hammond
Starting point is 01:14:32 stop it their goaltending is already good what's your vote vote is they're gone they're done okay i'm so mad at them i'm so mad at them because that was my season project i thought they were going to be great now some goals come on guys that was the last team on my list whoa i am giving outside shots to San Jose, Columbus, Dallas, Vancouver,
Starting point is 01:14:59 and the most controversial team on the list, the Chicago Blackhawks. Really? That's the video games talking to me. Would you guys put them on the list? No, they've been much better than they were at the beginning. They also have
Starting point is 01:15:15 a Vezina Trophy winner. Got his 500th game win recently been doing quite well are do you guys disagree i don't think chicago's make the playoff i think they're done i mean either but that doesn't mean they're done i won't know that that's that's literally what it means no i won't give you the blackhawks okay i'll give you the blackhawks uh vancouver i guess the other one that's up for debate nope i don't think they're done no nope okay i would if if if they still had travis green as a head coach maybe can't quantifying magic yeah bruce budrow just brought it man it's crazy wow that dude floated in with
Starting point is 01:15:52 like pixie dust and he was like hey um you're a good shooter why don't you shoot and they were like okay and then yeah just fucking like emilio estevez ridiculous man all the vancouver canucks walked up to bruce budrow coach this morning i woke up no pain at all and just got it done And they're doing it Alright so we'll head over to Adam's History Corner But I'd like to apologize to the fan bases Of the Philadelphia Flyers The New Jersey Devils
Starting point is 01:16:24 The Buffalo Sabres The Seattle Kraken The New York Islanders The Ottawa Senators The Montreal Canadiens And the Arizona Coyotes That's a long list of teams And sorry all of your teams are done for the year
Starting point is 01:16:37 You might as well cheer next year It won't make the playoffs Let's do the press conference Let's go I just want to throw this out there The Athletics got an article from Sean I think it's Gentile He said
Starting point is 01:16:59 Travel to a land where it's always 2004 And meet the people who refuse to let EA Sports NHL 04 die And they're modders They're in Finland In the town of Langomaki It's one of the banks of Finland's 188 000 leaks and they mod and and update with graphics and uh jerseys and everything nhl 04
Starting point is 01:17:23 and they're still on pc oh yeah yeah they're still playing it so they actually showed like in the in the in the graphics they have climate pledge arena they've got you know golden knights jerseys they've got kraken jerseys like they've got all the players like it's it's just nuts anyway i just thought for any of the nerds like me who played that game incessantly uh that's one that you should definitely that's an article you should definitely check out love it yeah adam you owe us a history corner from monday yes you said you're gonna do a little research explain who this man is and why he's awesome we would be here for a while but leo major is known as the quebecois rambo and this guy's story is fucking bananas okay so i want to watch that movie more than
Starting point is 01:18:05 anything uh so he's from languely quebec he died in 2008 uh but this guy um so he his war didn't even start until the normandy invasion in june june 6 1944 um but he is easily the most decorated canadian warrior of all time he also fought in korea uh but let me just throw this at you so uh during a reconnaissance mission on d-day major captured a his name's leo major by the way what a what a name great leo major during a reconnaissance mission on d-day major captured a german armored vehicle which is a half track which has got the two wheels at the front that are normal car wheels and then it has like the tank track at the back okay you've seen those before um he captured one of those by himself the vehicle contained german communication equipment
Starting point is 01:18:55 and secret codes days later uh during his first encounter with an ss patrol he killed four soldiers however one of them managed to ignite a phosphorus grenade the resulting explosion uh cost major one of his eyes but he continued to fight and so this is so this is where it's crazy he single-handedly captured 93 german soldiers uh during a battle uh in the southern netherlands oh this guy yeah during a reconnaissance while alone major found shelter in a house from rain and cold while there he spotted two german soldiers walking along a dike he captured the first and attempted to use him as bait so he could capture the other. The second attempted to use his gun, but Major quickly killed him. He went on to capture their commanding officer and forced him
Starting point is 01:19:38 to surrender. The German garrison surrendered themselves after more than three were shot dead by Major. In a nearby village, SS troops who witnessed German soldiers being escorted by a Canadian soldier shot at their own soldiers, killing seven and injuring others. That was a thing the Germans used to do. The Soviets used to do this too. If they saw you surrendering your your own people they would kill you um uh leo major disregarded the enemy fire and kept escorting the prisoners to the canadian front line he then ordered a passing canadian tank to fire on the ss troops he marched back to the camp with nearly a hundred prisoners he was then chosen to receive a distinguished conduct medal and he declined because he thought
Starting point is 01:20:20 general montgomery monty one of the three major generals in the war was incompetent and you know you know how you ever play a video game and you ever wonder if the npcs are like this guy's immune to bullets yeah that's that's what this guy is so um so uh so this is remember this is guy with one eye and you know one of the one of the biggest i think victories in canadian military history was our liberation of the netherlands the role we played in that because remember politically the british army and the american army wanted to push on to berlin um because they wanted to get there before the soviets did because they knew as soon as stalin got berlin he would never give it up and ultimately he didn't um and so the whole thing was push
Starting point is 01:21:11 towards berlin fight for berlin get there before the soviets do so they would have minor powers like canada do the other work italy was a part of that um uh canadians had a huge role to play in Sicily being liberated, and then the Italian peninsula, and of course, the Netherlands. And so a lot of what Leo Major did, he did in the Netherlands. And the way that the Nazis treated inhabitants in the Netherlands was barbaric. They starved them, literally. But that's kind of par for the course. So there's this one thing, there's a couple stories. There's a lot of stories here. I'm not going to get them all, but I wanted you to read this one. So Major was carrying two guns and a sack of grenades. He arrived in the city of Zwolle
Starting point is 01:21:53 at 1 a.m. and found the streets silent and deserted. Here, he spotted a German machine gun nest. Since the crew were sleeping, he promptly attacked and eliminated them. He then found a German scout car and forced one of the Germans, who he had captured, to drive through the streets with the lights on, flying a white flag. For several hours, Major moved through the streets in this manner, shooting any target he could find, making an impression that a large Canadian force had arrived. The citizens were awakened, but were afraid to come out of their houses. By a stroke of luck, Private Major,
Starting point is 01:22:24 he was a private, by the way, came across the head of a local resistance force and three of his men. By now, the Germans appeared to have fled the city in a panic because, again, he's driving around, waving a white flag, and anybody who pops their head up, he shoots them. He made it seem like him, one guy, was a full army.
Starting point is 01:22:45 The group, therefore, returned to the town and the resistant fighters brought the citizens into the streets. the local radio station was used to announce that the town had been liberated. Major was exhausted, but he had to complete his mission by bringing back the body of his comrade
Starting point is 01:22:58 because his best friend, Wilfred Arsenault, accidentally gave away their position and was shot. And Major even said, he's like, I was a little pissed off at him for giving away our position. That's his best friend. The resistance fighters arranged a car to transport the body back,
Starting point is 01:23:13 but were fired on by two outposts. Major was furious about this and climbed onto the top of the car so that he could be easily seen from a distance in this manner he returned to the canadian lines to report the result of his mission to a commanding officer now there are stories of him like he he reaches cities and they won't even fire on him he's so terrifying to people like it's such a crazy thing and and like again he had two distinguished conduct medals he had uh defense medals korea war medals like there's there's a it's a huge long list of things but
Starting point is 01:23:47 this guy like if you were to meet him you'd be like this guy's fucking he's fucking crazy when did he pass no 2008 what month oh wow uh october 2008 87 years old this dude like oh my god yeah like it's so recent right yeah yeah like so he was just he was bananas i'm actually really shocked that nobody's really made a movie about this guy that feels like a oh yeah that feels like somebody something you should make a movie about and i think they did it was starring sylvester yeah yeah and yeah i mean the guy is he's just you know there are people that are just um you know you can't kill me i'm already dead like rambo right they are just like that and no fear does quentin tarantino know about leo major he should yeah crazy story uh anyway like
Starting point is 01:24:41 there's it goes on and on and on i didn't want to take up too much time talking about it but this guy is that's fun he's but the thing is is it just shows how little we know about our own history we know nothing about canadian history you ask anybody from toronto just specifically like you ask people from new york about their history ask people from la about their history miami about their history they'll know about the history of the city a little bit toronto it's like beyond 30 years ago we don't know what the hell people don't even realize that toronto wasn't even the biggest city in canada until the mid-1970s no that melted my brain the first time i heard that then no idea montreal was the biggest for like 400 years i didn't know you guys i don't think
Starting point is 01:25:18 we can buy the movie rights to leo major why not i think somebody did it oh did they did you look that up on uh amazon there's leo major the one-eyed ghost it's some sort of movie on him i don't think it's like a fiction i think it's a documentary yeah yeah so it's a documentary on so somebody must already own the movie rights. Unless there's footage, I don't care. But like, I want to own the story of Neil Major and make a movie.
Starting point is 01:25:46 Oh boy. Okay. I don't think we can use this person, but does he not look exactly like Johnny Depp? He looks exactly like Johnny Depp. I'll put it on screen for anybody watching on YouTube. Does this look like...
Starting point is 01:26:02 Johnny Depp could play... Yeah. No, that's it. That's exactly. Especially the mustache. Especially, yeah. Okay, so. But it depends what style of movie you want to make, because you could also make it Ryan Reynolds,
Starting point is 01:26:14 just not in the Deadpool costume, basically. Get Alan Walsh on the phone. Okay. Get Johnny Depp's agent on the phone. Okay. Alan probably knows him. Let's sign this deal. Johnny Depp as Leo Major.
Starting point is 01:26:29 Wait, he's Quebecois? Yeah. Marc-Andre Fleury. yeah who who is that that soldier's got the best teeth i've ever seen my god he's stopping everything we throw at him can steve die in the movie sure i would you could be well for hours to know yeah i'll be his his friend that's not that fun i think all of us all of us would be too old uh to play any of those characters like you gotta remember these guys are cgi these guys were 20 when this happened you gotta remember that
Starting point is 01:27:05 right like leo major's 23 when he did all this shit yeah but we we put all that to the side for these movies yeah we'll get uh tom holland when he's done spider there it is all right so you can do it next up steve your homework yes so you were asked to compare some of the other fan bases across the nhl to cartoon scenarios slash characters slash shows because you often compare the leafs to charlie brown kicking the football so this i forget who asked the question they also wanted you to compare some other fan bases did you do it yes i desperately tried to do it for every team and i just couldn't no that's a lot i was shoehorning and it wasn't you can take me so i maybe we can keep it to 10 i kept up to the good ones top five yeah top five i got about a dozen
Starting point is 01:27:51 but it won't take long okay trust me okay the leafs obviously charlie brown trying to kick the football uh i have the florida panthers as biker mice from mars because there's the theme with rats uh and also it was a super fun show it's just that not enough people watched which i thought the panthers could relate to never seen it uh the red wings are the simpsons because they They used to be good, but haven't been for a while. Wow. Well done. Wow.
Starting point is 01:28:20 All right. I'm into this. All right. Let's go. The Boston Bruins are Eric Cartman from South Park because they are manipulative, vengeful sociopaths who always get their way. I have 250 aborted fetuses in my backyard. Better.
Starting point is 01:28:37 The Buffalo Sabres. Caillou. I didn't put an explanation next to it. the ottawa senators sticking around fun on a low budget oh no sticking around was good uh the winnipeg jets family guy because they got canceled then came back uh the stars are king of the hill uh not always great but even when they are they're underrated i love king of the hill yep that's one of your favorite shows yeah i used to watch it all the time the arizona coyotes uh i compared to while e coyote but without all the money he spends on
Starting point is 01:29:14 gadgets uh the vegas golden knights are archer never a dull moment and uh great at what they do despite themselves uh the oilers are pinky i don't like that one no no i thought it was good uh the oilers are pinky in the brain which is basically their entire roster construction like just that's actually true have you seen the conspiracy theories online that pinky's the actual genius and the brain is the one that gets in the way i assure you cody cc is not the genius okay all right what's the argument the argument essentially is that pinky is the evil genius and the brain is the is is like over overthinking it pinky is kaiser soze basically yeah yeah it's it's just like the one where um where they were the initial that was that jar jar binks like there's a star
Starting point is 01:30:00 wars theory that jar jar binks is actually the evil emperor and that they they that the that george lucas intended for him to go evil but then he was so hated yes that that they just were like let's take him out of the next movies he's a sith lord yeah i actually think that would have been sick i think it would have been and uh my last one the vancouver canucks uh i have is daria because they wear green and they're not interested in being your friend and they're kind of depressing that's really good do you have any more no that was it oh that's really good i love that well done steve yeah so so we're gonna do a quick christmas present segment here
Starting point is 01:30:42 um i just wanted i so so i just want to let you know here's what i got you because i don't buy you guys gifts anymore i buy them for your kids exactly so i bought steve for for leo i bought him you know those uh loud horns like you know those you know so i my whole goal and because jesse did this to me and i'm like i'm stealing that um uh get your get your friends kids the loudest possible shit that they can get so i got him a duck that runs around the room it's like a rumba and everything it bumps into it just goes another direction all while like rapping it's a rapping duck the duck raps do you have do you know any of the raps yet it's i just hear it in my head okay um uh loop so i've got you now you know there's what are those megaphones it's a paw
Starting point is 01:31:27 patrol megaphone you so so he obviously can have he can play some of the like sky and and those guys and whatever but he can also talk into it himself so that's happening now jesse i got definitely a plushie your kid your kid is a uh is a doggie it's a three two and a half year old uh chihuahua fox terrier mix yes who's like 12 pounds yeah so waffles waffles the dog is getting remember on tiktok those um duck those duck squeeze toys that went viral that's what waffles is good anyway merry christmas thank you thank you here's what i got so this is for waffles from iggy it's a little stocking full of treats oh that's nice oh did iggy put this in here uh he no i bought that at a place in bowmanville i uh what it should be on the tag
Starting point is 01:32:27 thank you steve i don't think it is actually anyway good dog uh this is for cedric this one oh that's nice and this is for bindi it's it's another stocking i should put their names on these you should they're very nice oh yeah you should um and uh i got you each a little gift okay oh there i go also i got you uh gifts for your children as well they are upstairs uh you saw them i'm not gonna i don't want to spoil okay they don't spoil that's okay i want i want your children also don't open it i won't don't open it i'm pointing at you too well so my wife has already opened all of leo's gifts so that he can just take them out of a bag and play with them yes because otherwise he's just gonna like he's a one-year-old he doesn't understand
Starting point is 01:33:15 opening even he's just gonna like let's smash the thing i'm always like pedigree leo and he just goes whack whack whack so that's all he knows they're not wrapped they are in giant bags and just remove the tissue and look at the thing they got i would also like to wish a merry christmas to subwoofer guy subwoofer guy hasn't been around lately i miss him oh i thought i thought you would like that so for everybody listening it's a mug with our sdpn logo and it says ceo for all of us and my wife pointed out this morning i need to make one for myself yeah why didn't you do that i didn't think about that because it was for cool gifts for my friends so what's funny about this is that they asked us at the bank when we opened our account they're like who's the ceo we're like
Starting point is 01:34:01 all of us and they're like okay and they're like we can do that so for future reference you can just do that yeah yeah if you want to listen like anybody that on online that says they're like a ceo you literally could just open a business account and then become yeah but we do have a business and we are listed as co-ceos for now i'm sure that i'm sure that you know as the you know because there's other co co positions like cmo coo yeah i don't know what all of them do but you know maybe we'll maybe we'll get on people on board for that too maybe yeah you know what's tom anselmi doing these days he's the only coo i know he was coo of mlse and then he was with the sense yeah and that went well side project that was his hobby no it's just a hobby we'll
Starting point is 01:34:46 bring him on i don't know i thought you guys would enjoy i'm gonna leave this here so i can drink it on the podcast perfect that works great i'm still gonna use my face incredible uh so listen um thank you so much for listening to the show and to the network this year uh it's been uh It's been a great, great launch of a network, which has been really, really cool. I know last year at this time, the question was out there, like, why did you guys change your YouTube name to SDPN? And we were like, we were like, oh, we thought something was going to happen. And of course, it didn't until this fall.
Starting point is 01:35:17 But we're so happy that it is. I want you to look for new announcements coming in the new year. We've got probably one, I would say, in mid-January and then maybe ones later in probably March. So this network is going to continue to grow and we can't do it without your support. So thank you so much for listening to all the shows. And if you're new in broadcasting and you're looking for opportunities, we will be finding positions for people, for new voices as much as we can anyway.
Starting point is 01:35:50 You know, it's still a business, but we have to, we realize in broadcasting in general that there's been no training ground for a long, long time. And, you know, you look at Steve's career, you look at my career, look at Jesse's career. We made it despite that. And the whole, our thought process is, how about we don't do that? And how about we develop talent the way that you should?
Starting point is 01:36:11 And I think that's going to be a major focus for us in the next, yeah, well, going forward is developing talent, developing new voices, new voices from different perspectives. And I'm talking about, you know, I'm talking about women. And I'm talking about different orientations, different genders, everything. We need more of that. And we're going that way.
Starting point is 01:36:30 I want everybody to know that. And I think it's really amazing what we've seen so far this year. I cannot believe the community we have. Thank you so much for listening to the show. We're hoping to make you proud in the near. There's some really exciting product coming. And I definitely, I'm jacked about some of the things that are happening because the momentum is going.
Starting point is 01:36:49 and the momentum is this way because people are starting to see just the power of, I don't know, Dangle Navy? Is that what it is? I think so. Although I disagree with your thought process there. Why is that?
Starting point is 01:37:01 Well, it was difficult for us coming up in broadcasting, so it should be difficult for everyone else. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Why would we open doors when we could slam them in your face? No, that's how it's supposed to work.
Starting point is 01:37:12 It was difficult for me and the lesson I take from that is it should also be difficult for you. We made potholes on the road as we drove up yeah instead of fixing it we just we threw trees on the road so you couldn't even drive i have chains on my tires year round here's the thing it's hard enough to make an audience it's hard enough to engage an audience hard enough for an audience to learn to like you thank you so much for for doing that with us for eight years and we'll continue on for eight plus
Starting point is 01:37:38 more uh but i i you know i our thinking is how about we just make it just a little bit more accessible yeah and introduce people to new voices yeah use this to let other people use the platform to grow their thing you know yeah we got lots coming yeah no no also uh two things yeah sunday's boxing day hey it's boxing day for canadians so why don't we have a boxing sale on uh sdp and shop.ca so look out for that there's gonna be a boxing day sale uh but only if you get the code if you're subscribed to our email newsletter so this is your hint to subscribe so you'll get the code so you can get your boxing day sale off on sunday uh also i want to throw this out there sign up for the mailing list sdpn.ca we want you on that because we're going
Starting point is 01:38:25 to be pushing uh a lot of stuff through that going forward and i'm very excited about some of the stuff we got going on also we're done shooting holiday episodes so i can eat the remaining hershey's kisses on this table yeah don't can you not throw the wrappers on the floor though because i have to go back and clean the mug no i'm putting them in the mug okay cool i'm a very good boy all right thank you um so yeah uh subscribe to the mailing list so you can get that code for sunday and then also you're gonna want to tune in to friday's episode because at the beginning of the episode we have a little surprise featuring a couple different friends so uh oh i love this make sure you listen slash watch even better if you want to watch it for
Starting point is 01:39:03 friday's episode it's gonna be a lot of fun perfect okay we'll see you in the new year love you no i gotta i gotta hit the button okay we'll see you in the new year by the way we've got four more episodes that are already recorded and ready to go so it's not like we'll be out just we'll just be sleeping in a little bit right enjoying life a little bit watching the world juniors a little bit it was like that song it's like that 50 cent song what a little bit oh oh my god The Steve Dangle Podcast.
