you know i'm i personally you know i personally feel like you know first off we gotta say happy
birthday to drew and julian yes who had uh so it's like it's like birthday week at sdpn
it's actually insane jesse friday or thursday friday thursday yeah and then julian saturday
drew sunday myself tomorrow and then and then and you know you might be thinking oh i know what he's
doing with this with his with his red wings hat on no people listening don't know what you're
talking about i'm wearing a red wings hat now steve this red wings hat met chris draper in his
backyard when chris draper and the detroit red wings won the cup i wasn't special like you i
didn't get to go to his house oh you didn't go to his house he came to saint brendan he came to
oh okay but you wore this hat did you go past the birthdays oh why do i have to say people are
listening to this is coming out monday morning yeah it's adam wilde's birthday yeah hey happy
birthday happy birthday thank you let's celebrate maddie it's wish adam happy birthday happy
birthday adam thank you maddie adam how old are you turning i'm turning 38 how do you feel i feel
great i feel great uh fully a quarter of my life the detroit red wings have not made the playoffs
it's crazy oh my god isn't that crazy fully a quarter of my life in a row it's actually more
like almost 30 which is kind of nuts when you think about it and that's one of the most dominant
that's probably the most dominant team of our life of our entire life it's the most dominant
team they made the playoffs forever one three four cups yeah during the process four yeah or
four cups during the process and i can't believe what i'm seeing well let me let me run you through
all the things because saturday was quite today the hat doesn't quite fit anymore what are you
talking about fits great your name is written on the inside of it it is yeah there it is
My parents did that too.
There's Steve wearing my hat, literally.
Yeah, I used to love the Red Wings, man,
because of Chris Draper and also the Leafs sucked at the time.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Now, now.
Two Western Conference rivals, the Leafs and Red Wings.
Detroit Red Wings needed one point to stay alive.
It was fan appreciation night.
I almost said fan appreciation night at the Joe.
It's not the Joe.
On the last Saturday of the season,
this is their 100th anniversary season on jan 24 the red wings were tied with the carolina
hurricanes for first in the eastern conference and had a 12 point cushion in the playoff race
and since then well we'll get to that in a second the detroit red wings also made the playoffs 25
consecutive seasons leading up to this drought 1991 through 2016 so they'd made the playoffs
like 90% of our life up to that point.
Yes.
And this stat is even wilder.
I got to bring up this stat.
This is crazy, okay?
Hit me.
This is from Josh Dubow
from the AP, Associated Press.
The Red Wings are the second team
in NHL history
to have 69-plus points
in their first 53 games
and miss the playoffs.
The only other team to do it
did it in 1969-1970.
Who might that have been?
It had to have been the Leafs.
Yeah, Toronto Maple Leafs.
Montreal Canadiens.
What?
I know.
I don't believe that.
That's back when nobody made the...
I don't believe that.
I know.
That's incorrect.
Isn't that weird?
That's a bizarre stat.
No, it's not right, though.
You don't think that's right?
Nothing like that would happen to Montreal.
That's true, but Josh says it did.
No, he's lying.
Well, I'm going to trust him because I didn't go back.
What's his name?
Josh Thibault.
Oh, known liar.
Are we getting penguins, Jesus?
No.
No, this is Josh Thibault.
speaking yes there's the propaganda there ah yes they're anti-french that's anti-quebec
anti-montreal typical anglo yes i always say yes since january 24th when the red wings were tied
with the hurricanes for the eastern conference lead 12 point playoff cushion cushion since that
they've been 9 14 and 4 which ranks them what in points percentage
honestly that feels like it should have been enough um
25th okay jesse points points percentage since what since january 24th they 9 14 and 4
ranking what in points percentage like 28 28 wow that's good enough for a 0.407
30th in goals per game and last in five on five goals what the hell happened like i guess like
listen i saw the comments on my stream yesterday saturday people were like all right where's the
victory lap adam i think you get to take the victory lap because i walked it back you walked
it back i walked it back you never did i kind of did i was like hey good for you like this is yeah
but i did keep saying we'll see yes you did yes you did and that's why you don't have to
you get to enjoy this moment to its fullest i walked it back so i was just wrong differently
than i expected yes i was wrong for being like you know what the red wings have arrived that's
right i was wrong the red wings have arrived oh turns out i was wrong about that i'm gonna you
you oh you tap dance let me let me just say this till your feet are sore i'm not gonna do that
no i can't do that what's the hat for uh the hat well the hat's just cool it's a great hat
great show them the back like oh oh well because i've got one i've got one tooth left on this on
this thing on this clasp i can't even that hat is older okay legitimately that hat is older than
maddie that's crazy like kind of by a lot that's that's crazy yeah um the reason we're wearing the
hats is because i kind of wanted people to i expected people to expect us to be like that but
But here's what I want to say to Detroit Red Wings fans.
Allowing three goals in the final nine minutes in regulation.
Oh, my God, man.
I get it.
I feel you.
If anyone's going to feel you.
It's going to be us.
It's us.
And you know what sucks?
Having a ton of people rubbing in your face.
And so I'm not going to do that.
I am going to marvel at the collapse.
Because of the last three years, I would say this, guys, is the worst collapse they've had.
Easily, I think.
yeah them specifically yes yes yeah no not the Leafs the Leafs can collapse in their million
different ways like when the Penguins lost to the Blackhawks in 23 but like there haven't been too
many collapses like this no and I want to read Todd McClellan's quotes here he said this is
Detroit remember he was the assistant coach when they won in 08 I thought Todd did a great job here
this is hockey town I've been lucky enough to be on the other side of it when they couldn't stop
cheering for this team this is in reference to the fans booing and they're dying for that they
crave that they want that and i don't even know if they want a stanley cup championship anymore
they just want a team that's going to come and give them something to cheer about and this outside
noise stuff or whatever when we're talking about media criticism that's inside noise those are our
fans in the building they pay to watch us play and they get paid and we get paid well for them
and they're fully entitled to their opinion and we deserve that opinion there's no other way to
sugarcoat it that's what we earned no adam i think we should treat this like exhausting donkeys
and say well they booed them off the ice now no one's gonna sign in detroit
well they simply to be fair to the coach he's not out there saying yeah we'll just flush it
yeah oh yeah lessons were learned todd mcclellan summed it up and he was ringing alarm bells
Jesse had that great quote last Monday where he was talking about they just don't they're not Jesse.
I think I'm paraphrasing, but they're just not able to push through in the tough moment.
Yeah, it's it's the old hockeyism about compete level.
But in this case, Todd McClellan, Todd McClellan was speaking a lot of truth in the effort there out of his players.
And he was talking about how in practice we shouldn't be trying to get that out of you at this point.
Yeah, still going into practices after tough losses and be like, OK, guys, here's the things you got to do to execute to win.
that's not what you should be asking for at this point i think todd mcclellan has done a really
good job since he got there midway through last season and it's right now it's on the players
a lot of the time you can blame coaching and strategy for shortfalls for teams but i think
right now it's a hundred percent on the players and i can play uh the quote there from him sure
let's let's hear the man say it yeah yeah there's a lot of booze mixed in there how do you kind of
process hearing that at that moment i guess well i this is this is detroit this is hockey town um
i've been lucky enough to be on the other side of it when they couldn't stop cheering for this team
and they're they're dying for that they crave that that's that's what they want
and i don't even know if they want a stanley cup championship anymore i they just want a team
that's going to come and and give them something to cheer about and this outside noise stuff or
whatever that's inside noise that those are our fans in our building and they pay to watch us
play and we get paid well to perform for them and they're fully entitled to their opinion and and we
deserve their opinion like there's no other way to to sugarcoat it that that's what we earned
so just to follow and i think last year was really tough where they missed the playoffs on a tie
breaker like that's like what the hell like that's just unfortunate but this season where you're in
first place like so recently ago and you have this epic collapse like that must hurt more if
you're a red wings fan oh drew and i did a tankathon like draft simulator or whatever
during the stream and detroit got it was the fourth or fifth pick and i was like oh wow that'll
kickstart the you know i'm sure they'll make it next year and drew had to remind me because i
didn't pick up on it in the moment he's like no no no no that's st louis gets that it's unprotected
yeah so can we put a pin in that for just a sec sure because i do want to come back to that i
think that's very interesting well i just pointed it out because like yeah they gave up an unprotected
first yeah there were warning signs they still should have made it they still should have made
it a couple couple games go the other way they would have and what's amazing is that this is
game 80 this is not game 82 right they lost it on game 82 a couple of years ago they could have
on a tie break they could have choked away the games they choked away and still gotten like a
loser point totally and even yesterday yes well and this is the thing right so you're probably
listening to this on a monday morning so this we're talking about saturday night and i want
i want you to i want to show you how goal four goes in because what happened was detroit actually
takes the lead in the third period three to two uh it was an emmett finney goal uh and it was
assisted by lucas raymond and funnily enough lucas raymond is involved in this play and it is just
to me one of the flukiest plays i think i've ever seen from some very very good hockey players
and all of a sudden they're exposed that's how it goes and it's time of year man and new jersey
should not care new jersey should they lost to new jersey they're playing carefree they're playing
carefree i guess you're right so they don't care yeah you know so two ways of looking at it i want
you to watch you we're gonna we're gonna freeze frame our way through it here um jesse uh if you
can or maddie i guess whenever we're ready can we bring it up here i want to um i want to put
this on the screen because we've got i've got the youtube link there in the uh in the thing
it's a a routine play to me that goes haywire and what's sad about it is remember a couple of games
ago we were talking about how patrick kane had taken a weird penalty a needless penalty at the
end of the game needless is a better word like it's weird is like it was a bad call or it was
a fluke it was it was a it was an intentional decision that he should have never made and that
led to a loss now it is on his stick almost here as well now i want you to watch number 23 that'd
be lucas raymond uh he's going to go behind the net collect the puck because the puck is dumped
dumped deep it's 345 left in the third the game is tied right so it's not like there's an empty
net here raymond cuts hard behind the net it the puck goes back out let's keep going puck is with
the defense defense gets it back that's edmondson back to raymond raymond tries to make this play
out front edmondson can't get it patrick kane doesn't know if he should get it larkin's turned
the wrong way and all of a sudden oh no it's jack hughes oh boy and we've got a two-on-one
can't make the play cider can't and in goes the goal at yes for broad
and Moritz Seider the only guy back I cannot emphasize how great how elite of a season this
player had and they still didn't make it yeah yeah he would I don't know how he gives you more
than he did I thought that pairing him and Edmondson were awesome awesome pairing like
remember a couple years ago this is you know typical making everything about the Leafs but
remember i pointed out hey matthews had 69 goals yep they finished third in the division
do you know what needs to happen for them to improve on that let's say and i said i remember
being like okay let's say he scores 50 which is still great you need to make up 19 goals yeah
from the year before yep so a bunch of guys could have career years and get up to 19 goals
right and you're still just breaking even detroit the reason i bring that up
moritz cider has to duplicate what he did this year in order for you to break even like a bunch
of other guys are gonna have to have the best season of their life yes and that's one of the
things you can generally expect out of a young team they got some young guys but in order for
them to even sniff the playoffs i'm not sure how much more cider can give you he was incredible
well i think going forward you know people are talking about firings and stuff from what i
understand i think darren drager reported that that eiserman's safe um and i could kind of
understand why to be honest yeah grand rapids is in great shape and there's a lot of young talent
that's ready to break in with Detroit.
So if you're looking for reasons to be excited,
and I know this is the 10th year.
I'm trying to be.
I know, man.
But there's going to be movement coming up.
I think there's a little bit of dead weight on that roster
that they need to move out.
I think there's some guys that it's like, okay,
maybe you're getting stale.
Sure.
You know, maybe you're not the guy we thought you were
when we signed you to that really expensive free agent deal.
Justin Hall, JT Comfort.
Those are all him.
I know Hall's gone.
Those are all him.
but there are rookies that i think are going to be ready to go and there is this could be
a younger funner montreal like team next year maybe montreal from last year it's with all the
veteran talent they have possible montreal's is so much deeper and they bottled it like it's worth
again take it from us that gets into a room it does it gets into a room and what what defines
your team is how you respond to it um remember tampa yeah tampa wins 62 games they get swept
in the first round and i remember saying just before the covid break uh i don't know how those
guys look at their teammates look across in the locker room and go we can get it done with this
group after the most humiliating loss literally in franchise history and then what happened they
went to three straight cup finals won two of them yep like they won two cups in nine months ten
months it was insane here's the problem this is now the second arguably third time detroit has
done this yes and that is this well it's the third time in a row it i you know to varying degrees
jesse um this is a a team that should have made the playoffs was going to make the playoffs
and was still in first two months ago like i am i crazy for thinking well they could do that again
and if they could just be 500 through march they're fine yeah but i i would be concerned
about how much you're banking on the players that they have getting better again and the new players
coming in because that's what they've been banking on the last couple years where it's like okay we
have the young talent and and lucas raymonds is going to get better because he's going from age
23 season to 24 and we're going to have marco casper come up and he's going to be 22 instead
of 21 so he's gonna get better lucas raymond's 23 yeah he's 24 now oh my god he's still young
and that's but that's that's the thing they keep saying about every single season yeah where it's
okay mort sider he's gonna get better which he did and he had an unbelievable season but
how many times can you just keep running that back and buffalo shows that there is a light at
the end of the tunnel for everybody eventually yes but how long are you willing to wait and
to allow the people who are in charge of taking so long to get there keep their job the sabers
really are that meme of the guy digging through a mine and there's a thin wall between him and a
bunch of diamonds yeah and they just decided to kept they usually use the meme for gambling
or the guy who stopped gambling and the guy who kept going so you've got which is not how you do
it no no terrible advice hilarious meme i'm gonna give you three names carter bear
uh whl standout who you've covered many times uh so uh michael bransig nygaard yeah who is by the
way i think third or fourth on grand rapids scoring this year for a 22 year old sebastian
casa yeah i mean the attending's a big one yeah they're gonna have they're gonna be okay like
they've got they've got a top five system in the sport so and they're already a team like let's be
honest this is a team i'm arguing for detroit i know this is a team that was first place and then
the olympics happened and they lost their mojo let's just call it what it is next year there's
no mojo break next year it's a short all-star game or whatever they're deciding for a band
mojo break yeah yeah there's no there's no shutting the shutting the system off and then
trying to boot it back up again right next year it's all the way through not a compressed schedule
this is a young team they've got some great all-star talent uh-huh and i feel like we're
you know i know detroit fans are sad and angry and upset but i look at this and i go ah i mean
next year i think is the year but i mean like listen you can give eisenman credit for a lot
of things yep and you're totally right like that's a great point with the ahl no one not
named steve eisenman would still have a job no one that's fair no one that's fair i said that
a couple years ago and i was right i said that last year and i was right i say it today and i'm
right that doesn't mean he's not doing some good things for the long-term health of the team but
what is this seven years that he's been yeah i think it was 2020 he was announced yeah that would
be if you replace the name steve eisenman with kevin adams we'd be laughing them out of the
you'd be doing the smithers thing yes with the family in detroit instead of the family in
buffalo what are we like it would be the same it would be the exact same thing just because his
name is steve eiserman and the cups he has won on the ice there's a little bit respect a little
bit more respect there with the way we talk about him you can't fire him because kevin adams came
into the game through like a back door running the business side neighbor of the owner exactly
and steve eisman came into the game through being steve eisman on the ice and then also having a
hand in tampa's dynasty but he wasn't there for any of their cups but he did have a hand in them
and then he goes to detroit and we're like okay we keep giving him a shot and it's seven years in and
it's maybe we should start talking about you like you we talked about kevin adams yep and kevin
adams got fired and the team is good it doesn't mean kevin adams was terrible he was terrible
a job it doesn't mean he did not deserve to get fired every gm does good things he
deserved to get fired because of his tenure there in buffalo and okay they're good now but it still
doesn't mean he didn't not deserve to get fired right can the one bone i'll throw detroit although
i know no fan gives a good gosh darn jesse can you bring up the league standings like currently
yeah sure because this this sucks like if i was a red wings fan i'd be pissed and i've seen some of
them say that if you scroll down to 20 second okay right scroll down to 20 second there's the
devils they have an e next to their name if you go 21st oh preds are still in it 20th kings still
in it ducks still in it oilers mammoth and golden knights have clinched a playoff spot wow islanders
still in it detroit is 14th in the league yeah and they are eliminated yeah but then tell that
to the caps or flyers who are going to miss the playoffs and they're ahead of detroit i know the
flyers might miss the playoffs they're currently 11th in the entire league and the caps like they
could be the other team and then the blue jackets so there's there's two out of those three teams
are going to miss the playoffs they're all ahead of detroit in the standings i don't feel sorry
it's crazy they could finish with 95 points and that'll be the highest point total in the last
to 10 years of missing the playoffs i said a few months ago i go like is the threshold
for i think i said a threshold for either an eastern playoff spot or an atlantic class spot
is 100 points it's looking i'm gonna be pretty close atlantic atlantic it looks like 100 points
even if it's so let it have a top three spot you need like 106 or something stupid even if it's
not 100 it might be 98 and it's a lot of friggin points dude it is a lot it's a heavy heavy it's
a tough division this is why i'm saying like detroit can do this next year like i the last
three years they were building building building to this and you know you had draft picks like
philip zadina not work out he's not the only one sure but i would say that next year they're in
and and not that that's going to make wings fans feel any better it's 10 years it's a franchise
record who you kick one tenth who you kicking out that's a great question who you kicking out yeah
what do you mean you got to take a team out of the playoffs well is it montreal no is it tampa
no is it buffalo no you you you have to look at the atlantic division specifically so kick out
your leafs they're not a playoff team they're already gone and the panthers are probably going
to be a playoff i don't understand where this confidence is coming from well because anything
can happen and you've got here come the blackhawks you got like well no but i don't know this is a
team but here's the here's the difference yeah this team wasn't first one of the things that i
when we're doing our predictions at the beginning of the season i'm always like but they haven't
done it yet yeah so if you haven't done it yet i don't believe i think detroit could be better
than boston yeah yeah sure i think detroit on their best day could give buffalo run for their
money we've seen detroit on their best day the problem is it was january yeah that's the thing
they could compete with tampa they could compete with these teams my point is i think i think that
this is one of those situations where you're going to have,
like there is some dead weight on this roster.
They're going to have to move some guys out.
Right.
Maybe if you're smart,
you make a move with a dumb team like the Leafs who are reentering the
dark ages.
Hey,
I,
you might've missed your window.
Yeah,
it's true.
It's true.
You should have made more trades with Bard.
I think there's,
I think there's a lot to like here.
And I liked the season that like,
for instance,
like one thing Eisenman did well,
he brought in Gibson.
Yes,
totally.
Gibson had a good year.
If you want to run down the good things,
there are good things emmett finney is an incredible story the dude's drafted in the
seventh round played what he's gonna play every game this season yeah for the red wings that he's
their next edderberg no i'm kidding that's that's that's a ridiculous mind like but they didn't
make the playoffs and the bar is playoffs and you haven't done it is it 80 games uh 13 goals 30
points 30 points from a seventh round draft pick from 23 who's 20 23 that's crazy yeah good for
him yeah there's good nobody's saying there isn't good stuff like Larkin is great there's a there's
a top tier player in the NHL Moritz Seider like you said Steve is really coming to his own if
you're talking if the if the Norse trophy was truly about all-around defensemen like Moritz
Seider would have a larger case for it but that's not what the trophy is you would give him a top
five vote though wouldn't you I think he's in top five voting you got 56 points out of a completely
geriatric patrick kane oh yeah and like there's a guy who like is what are the sheer mathematical
odds he could he it sounds like he's coming back what are the odds he's better it's not great but
when your season is on the line with 10 minutes to go against the devils who are playing for
nothing and you have a 3-2 lead do you then give up a 3-3 goal to the devils and then do you choke
away the lead again with three minutes to go no you do not do you do that and then you do that
consistently over the last two months to lose your season that's what the devils did or the
the red wings did there's i'm trying to decide if the nhl season has four seasons in it or five
you know what i mean playoffs are one there's yeah well so i would say let's start from the
beginning yeah there's pre-season which is it's well it's it's goofy but like for the young guys
on this team like it matters right for a lot of them it matters it's yeah emmett emmett finney
right you earn a playoff spot by oh all right look at that then there's i would say october
through christmas then there's dog days which is post christmas through this year was weird
because of the olympics but let's say trade deadline then there's the playoff push and then
there's the playoffs and we called it out when the time arrived um the games are different
and i don't know maybe that month off killed them i don't know uh but when the games ramped up
when the league became a different place they faltered and it's not just this season it's been
every march the last four marches there's a consistency with this team oh boy oh boy
does this sound does this conversation not sound familiar yep it does look at them they're young
there's they're doing lots of good things they've shown they could be good and when the going gets
tough they falter but if we wait long enough maybe they won't the league's toughest division too
dude i know it feels very leafy it does i mean it's just you you keep going well tampa's gonna
eventually no they don't have to florida's coming back like what the atlanta could be better next
year could easily be better next year the best you can hope for is florida like takes away
points from from some of the powerhouses up at the top because if you're if you're trying to
make your eight playoff teams for next season it's some combination of carolina tampa montreal
buffalo washington i'm putting back there uh i don't i don't hate that i don't hate so if i
throw them in that's five we got solid florida are we expecting to bounce back yes i do yeah
islanders yeah i don't i haven't done it yet that but yeah haven't done it yet columbus
you really don't like the flyers eh philadelphia
toronto no i mean they have a chance but no boss they weren't that far out of it
when we came back from the olympics like and then they just turned to dog shit bruins
okay let me shorten the conversation name the bad eastern conference teams
the rangers the leafs the leafs shit what fully healthy leafs are bad i don't think they're bad
listen okay they're mid there's a difference between not making the playoffs and bad
yeah the canucks are bad they're the leafs are playing bad i can't tell me detroit's bad
saying this he's like the leafs are not as bad as they've played they're not he's like they're
actually way better than this they're not i've said that for a month but they're they're playing
they've they've thrown in the towel yeah and you can't take anything from this last month of leaf
sake they've thrown in the towel yeah 100 yeah oh fantasy i'm just ambulance chasing the canucks
are you kidding me that's great i like that i've been i've been like uh oh you know what the ducks
are playing the canucks tonight guess who i'm starting bunch of ducks what i'm trying to
illustrate just by listing the teams that have playoff chances is there's probably 13 teams that
detroit's got to compete with yeah a playoff yeah it's not it's not easy at all i think there
should be some major changes to the roster here was the numbers from march i found this on twitter
just uh detroit's numbers from march over the last four seasons wow in 26 they went five seven
and two in march 25 they went four and ten in march 2024 they went three nine and two and then
march 2023 they went five nine and one they have a march illness guys wings are making the playoffs
next year they're making the playoffs next year they could they're gonna do it now jesse
tell us about because you said it in the group chat drew fed it to steve on the air i got it i
gotta hear about this first round pick because justin falk netted netted the st louis blues
the first round pick that is what notably that is unprotected i don't think detroit is gonna fall
far enough that it could be the first overall but is it possible i just need to know possible i
don't think they're gonna fall far enough for it to be possible but they could get very close
depending on if the islanders pass them or if the uh if they fall above if they get above the
who am i trying to think if they fall behind the islanders and the golden knights then they could
get a little higher in the standings okay it is close like it is behind a team that might still
win their division like completely insane oh sorry no no the golden knights wouldn't count sorry
that's what i was trying to think the islanders they would fall behind because the golden knights
are going to miss and then they're not going to fall behind nashville so they're probably going
to be 13th so the highest they could get would be uh that would be third all of the kings ducks
oilers mammoth gold knights and islanders could pass them all right i got tankathon up now so i'm
trying to do it from memory uh so right now they have the 14th worst odds they're 14th in the draft
lottery so the islanders could fall below them slash ahead of them in the standings so destroy
could hop up to 13th but i don't think they're gonna fall below nashville who has 86 points run
it so detroit will finish yeah we'll run it in a second so detroit will either finish 13th or 14th
and they could find themselves we're gonna hit sim wallery blackhawks won it they did not win
any of the lotteries dude i did one yesterday the sharks got the second overall pick they're not
even eliminated yet it's not bad for st louis though listen for all the shit you gave doug
armstrong uh steven oh he's uh he's getting a you know top 15 pick out of this that's not bad
that's his gift yeah he really that's his gift as you go this guy sucks oh i like that i don't
hate that at all here's a seattle toronto vancouver one two three and you know how matt
vancouver would never forgive us all the shit that they've been through this year like i've
been actively avoided talking about the canucks because it's been so sad and i think it's
appreciated to be honest yeah and i think canucks fit yeah i think canucks fans are okay with it
blackhawks winning a lot of these draft lotteries oh no yeah six overall pick oh no detroit or
sorry new jersey hopped up to second overall so there's a chance here st louis picks one and like
four they could win both draft lotteries that's crazy yeah st louis imagine can you imagine
oh wow oh i like that toronto right behind vancouver i think that'd be perfect vancouver
wouldn't hate us then i was trying to get one where detroit wins one of the lotteries but
yeah the odds aren't great so that's good for them that's good you know it's good for them
still it is an unprotected first baby it is oh man which is something you do when you're in a
position like they were where you're in first place and you're trying to go for it so just
throw some protection on there let me let me here you know what let's let's keep an eye on
let me figure this out let me figure this out math math math keep an eye on the
all right so the kings are in a playoff spot right yes so you can't do them yeah what what
i was going to try to figure out the standings are so freaking yeah they're so wonky they're
so messed up what i was going to do is okay pretend this team is detroit's but we can't do
that um i this conversation if detroit loses their next two games gets a lot darker a lot darker
toronto won this last sim they picked first overall followed by chicago and vancouver i love it there
you go i love it who are the least stock thing mckenna mckenna or which one you want i don't
know people have been pretty hard on mckenna uh since you've been pretty hard on verhoff
or verhoff have they maybe steinberg is it steinberg uh steinberg up front but there's
all the uh there's chase reed there's the latvian kid whose name i keep forgetting because oh he was
in the olympics yes yes i know you're talking about his name too um yeah okay well listen
hey how about how about we start getting excited for that draft lottery stream i've done the last
two draft lottery streams on my own but i have a feeling steve and jesse are joining me yeah no
we're gonna do it from here we're doing it from here this is a party night yeah it was it was
terrible last year was awful but this is the leafs the way they've positioned themselves
where they've half tanked it's either gonna be sixth or seventh or top three yeah there's no
in between with this fucking franchise they're either gonna get something incredible or find
the worst way to do this yeah hey we know how far toronto could fall because we never think
about that yeah they can drop seven two down if two teams that's it won the lot won the draft oh
you gotta win a lot depending on where they fit they could guarantee themselves if they fell far
enough they could have guaranteed themselves a top five pick they could still you know if they
were bottom three they could only fall to fifth now right if and they can still get to bottom
three i think i think they can realistically fall as far as fourth last but uh first of all that's
unlikely second of all it's very unlikely that if they finish fourth last they would get passed
but it's still possible the sharks getting the first overall pick would be
i think full hilarious fold the league
the leafs are rooting for one of the worst teams to win these lotteries yeah like that's what they
need yeah that's crazy i guess the good news is we still haven't done one where detroit has won
no that's really good we've been sitting here i've been pressing this button and detroit hasn't
good hopped up there so good good good for them okay let's do the bet mgm big story sometimes

now because of the detroit red wings the ottawa senators who were near last at the same time
detroit was near first are in the playoffs and i think a round of applause is deserved
for the ottawa senators for gutting that out um the goaltending is still not great
but it really doesn't matter they've made it through now any concerns about brady kachuk
because he kind of was he looked like he was a little hurt was there an update from mr i haven't
seen anything and that's the thing i saw some people go oh like concussion or something my
first thought was i that's what i thought he just got something in his eye um i don't know
no i think he's probably fine and he's a kachak so he'll be fine i mean he's playing yeah yeah now
uh they could also how dare you speak ill of the goaltending uh they're coming off a shutout
i well they what okay one game jesse game before that was five one there you go game before that
six two like it's all three goals in three games okay go all the way back to october yeah
yeah how's that how's that all marks on a good lower run here good he had that one shaky game
what was that game that was right after the rest game yeah and then he's been he's been excellent
that's been the achilles heel of this team and that's why they were in the position they were
in come january and down the stretch all of the underlying numbers said this team is gonna
go gangbusters if they can just get some saves and and settle things down and it's proven to be that
that case and a lot of people are saying if you want to select an upset team for these playoffs
go with the senator i was about to say they're a really unfortunate team to run into so so here's
the thing if you're the um canadians lightning or sabers okay so the sabers currently are at 106
the other two at 104 okay um and all have played the same amount of games you're basically in a in
a match to play either ottawa or boston boston is not as good as they used to be but boston in the
playoffs are never a team you take lightly because listen are you gonna i don't know what this group
looks like in the playoffs really what's that i don't know what this group looks like well right
i mean but i guess yeah because like you they missed last year the meat of the roster well
like okay the vets obviously you know what they look like and they're terrifying but the rest of
them no idea and there is a little bit of i you kind of wonder you look at boston like is it still
there that thing we've been seeing for 15 years and i know posture knocks there to continue it
mcavoy's there to continue it but always betting on them is you have to you have to now if you're
ottawa or boston and now you're clinched okay and let's i know everybody's going to try to win
every game but who would you rather play would you rather play one of buffalo tampa or montreal
or would you rather play the carolina hurricanes who are the east division not east division east
conference leaders like and who have in previous years as spectacular as they've been in the
regular season when they come up against physical teams in the postseason tend to struggle a little
bit to score i i know i've been disrespectful of the hurricanes i'm gonna give them the edge
like it's either boston or ottawa yeah because what are they at 110 points the hurricanes or
something yeah they are they are yeah that's insane but remember a lot of those points come
against the division that wasn't very strong yeah i don't mind okay i don't mind no they're
they're an extremely good team like ottawa has won a lot of games by analytically being the better
team and just you know not necessarily getting the greatest goaltending you could argue the
carolina hurricanes are just a stronger version of that you know what i mean yeah they control
the puck all the time you don't know who's starting night in and night out um
it could check off i saw i was just sent down for a conditioning stint he could be an interesting
little monkey wrench and in all this uh but no i still give the edge to the hurricanes jesse
if you're ottawa or boston would you rather have buffalo tampa or montreal
out of which one do i want to play if you're ottawa buffalo tampa or montreal buffalo i would
say buffalo just because there's a stylistic they haven't one there's a stylistic thing and two
there's a haven't been there kind of challenge yeah especially for a team like boston it's like
amazing montreal got there last year yeah even though they lost in five they got there and i
think montreal has been playing a little better as of late buffalo is actually in one of their
worst stretches of the season right now five three and two which is unfortunate for them but they've
been so hot since that december point like i mean after they got good you know they've been in one
of their worst stretches right now they're not playing the best hockey so just on that i would
probably rather face buffalo and they play a little bit more run and gun which we'll see how
that translates to the playoffs and underratedly i don't know if people have noticed but boston
hasn't won a game in the month of april in regulation oh actually they haven't won a game
at all because because they have two ot losses on that uh in the month of april and that's it
it's impossible yeah how are they still in a playoff spot wait boston boston yeah they're
oh oh three and two in april wow yeah only played five games yeah they've only played five games but
um they're on yeah they're on a little skid here i don't think it matters for a team like that like
you said they're in the playoff spot yeah despite playing so horribly this month in those five games
they're in a playoff spot so i don't know if it matters how they're playing going into the
playoffs because there's enough vets there that i think they can help everybody turn around and
the young guys i don't think will care like and they've been propped up by a good mix of both
yep so i don't know if it matters how well they're playing in but i think it's something to know
that they're not playing well i think it is really underratedly uh the habs losing noah
dobson is real bad yeah so he oh yeah like it looks like he will miss the first round by the
way yeah probably one of the most if not the most unsung player on their team his paycheck's not
unsung he makes a lot of money but you know we talk about oh slaff got 30 suzuki's going for 100
i don't know if he hit it um uh caulfield with 50 hudson dobson does a lot of the dirty stuff
the islanders be in the playoffs if they'd hung on to dobson
yo imagine dobson schaefer that's what i'm saying holy shit i know i know so so everybody has the
numbers that i was trying to spew out the boston bruins here the month of april wow they have a
loss to the florida panthers they have a loss to tampa bay lightning 3-1 they have an ot loss to
the flyers 2-1 they have an ot loss to the hurricane 6-5 and then they had a 2-1 loss to
the lightning yesterday that is their april it's just tight hockey tight hockey tight hockey
tied hockey and this is one weird outlier 11 goal game oh yeah and this is coming off of a
four game winning streak that they had to end march where they actually won six of their last
seven games in march dude they're not even getting shots no yeah if you look at the shots on goal
to 22 19 21 that's the opponent shots on goal yeah the game like carolina well this is carolina
of hockey throw 41 shots yeah oh my god yeah doubled up in shots there but yeah boston there
you see in these games where they're winning and they're throwing 39 31 and then all of a sudden
you got this drop off here obnoxious amount of road games i think there might be a little of
we're comfy on our spot we don't need to go all out here in a game you know against carolina who's
already clinched themselves but i don't have something to note you get people's out there
making their brackets.
You get who you get
and you don't get upset.
That's the way
the best teams look at it.
Tampa looked at it that way.
Florida looked at it that way.
You play who you play.
Today, Crosby and Ovechkin
played each other,
potentially for the last time.
And yeah, he's gone.
Playoff implications.
Well, he waves.
So Alexander Ovechkin,
by the way, the Capitals won.
They are.
They're pretty damn close
to being in the playoffs.
However, they need Philadelphia
to lose basically
their next two games
and they got to win their last one.
That's what has to happen.
93 points, 81 games played.
Flyers have a back-to-back to start the week.
They have played 80 with 94 points.
But Washington did what they needed to do today.
They got the job done, right?
1-3, nothing.
And then at the end of the game,
Crosby tried to organize a handshake line
and Ovi kind of waved it off.
And then they exchanged sticks and jerseys
and stuff after the game.
I think it's because he's like,
listen, we might be playing near the first round.
Well, he doesn't,
I don't think he wants to be a distraction.
Because, yeah, they are trying to do this, right?
yep yep and he doesn't need it he doesn't he doesn't need he's had so many moments of
the flowers like i feel like he's like okay i can retire the breaking the record felt like
the coronation of ovi's career that this is just feels like bonus like we're in extra innings here
it's free baseball with ovi's career he's done everything he could possibly do when those two
guys came into the league it's like we have this one two and what could they do and both of them
have lived up to the hype and then some and we celebrated ovi with that and he feels like he
understands that i'm on the last leg here i can just go out here and i respect that so much
before i'll say it again anyone who ever tells you oh man like this prospect's over hype you
kick them out of your life kick them out of your life Crosby I was there we were in high school I
was there people said Crosby versus Ovechkin is overhyped yeah while staring at a poster of
someone who would go on to become the best goal scorer ever and Crosby who might end up top five
in points yep shut up crazy they were they were wrong they were not overhyped they were correctly
hyped and if you were right so what don't get excited about this oh fine i i always think about
who made the uh the comment right around this time this show started that ovechkin needed to
be a student of the game oh i don't remember that somebody said i like a media person that's
gotta be pierre mcguire it was like mid his career it might have been him or milbury or
jeremy roenick or it was one of those nbc broadcasts i think you're right yeah jr no
milbury might have been anyway i think about that all the time because he was eight or nine
years in at that point and like i'm like oh man if you only knew what was to come you would just
not say that like there are some takes he could take her leave for me he could take her leave
hockey ovi ovi yeah he just shows he doesn't practice doesn't work out yeah doesn't think
about it after the game isn't just completely obsessed with it all the time oh it was mike
milbury it was mike milbury yeah in 2013 god level quote man that like you think i've got i've got
bad takes his trade history the islanders let him run a team for a bit his trade history is
all world his if they had done nothing they would have won a cup if they put a house cat
in his job yeah they would have done better now in the metropolitan i don't know how you
remembered that adam that's a good poll oh man one of my favorite quotes of all time jesse and
you know i remember nothing that's how much i like that quote um and it is it like comes out
of nowhere you're just like we can't play it obviously because what year is it from it's from
like 2013 that's 13 years ago it happened while we were doing this show yeah anybody wants we
can't play it because nbc sports network is where he says it on there's which i don't even know if
it exists anymore nbc sports network i don't i think i think we'd probably be fine playing the
audio but we don't need to trash mike if you want to if you want to go watch it just look up on
youtube mike milbury rips alex ovechkin to shreds february 27 2013 how many views that video posted
okay so 200 000 you know what's great about that you know what's great about that that was the
lockout shortened season where Ovi, if you
could bring up his game log from that
season.
Oh, it's crazy.
Ovi notoriously started slow and he ended
with, and like February would have been, I
don't even know if that was the halfway
point of the season because it didn't start
till mid Jan.
I'll tell you exactly how many goals he had
at the time.
Oh, I, oh, at the time of the, so he
finished the season with 32.
That I know for sure.
32 goals in 48 games that's absurd which is a really really often i don't even know what pace
that is 50 60 goals stupid do you have the right season because 2013 yeah oh 20 oh my god what
22 yeah 2013 idiots yeah wow hold on this fucking guy am i right this guy this guy oh yeah okay so
we can bring this up here so these are the numbers february 20th it came after a 4-1 loss to
philadelphia at that point two games after a hat trick oh yeah he had six seven eight goals
there through 19 games and three of them pretty good by the way no but eight goals in 19 is pretty
good no but three of them came in one game and that is below his standard sure it is yeah it's
that means he had goals in what five or six games out of those 19 that's beneath alex ovechkin
it is what happened and then what happened yeah what happened immediately after the comment this
is the last stretch immediately after the comment he went goalless in two games and then scored one
and then goalless in three so he did not like get immediately hot it's not like he watched it and
then went on fire it's this stretch here to close the season that steve is steve is talking about
wow so the end of that season is great for those of you listening to it hold on i'm gonna get all
I'm going to get all these games together.
Oh, okay.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
If anybody didn't know, you can do that on.
I had no idea.
What the hell do you do that all the time?
This is how I get like, hey, this guy from this.
I can show you a little inside baseball here, people.
If you want to go on Puckpedia or Puckpedia, hockey reference, I'll show you this.
You can highlight with you hit shift and you click from game to game.
You can get this point to this.
That's how you got.
Yo, I've been doing that manually.
Yeah.
So then you just get it and it calculates it for you.
and then there's a clear selection button and then it goes normal and then sorry i really wish
i knew that when i was writing a book you go game 36 and then game 25 and i just want this stretch
and this will pop up and i'll show you oh during these 12 games he got 11 goals 66 17 points and
then you clear selection and then that's it so you're insane can you do the one that you had
originally oh sorry the point is uh for we'll go from game 47 because he didn't score in the last
game of the season so we can do his actual streak here of hot goals game 47 to game 26 so we're
doing this in real time tutorial people and then you click it and then we'll see that in 22 games
alexander ovechkin had 23 goals and 11 assists for 34 points yeah only plus nine though only plus
nine yeah only two of them game winners that guy needs to learn how to play hockey 12 giveaways
10 of them were power play goals, by the way.
His team went 16-4-2, and he had 23 goals in 22 games.
Yeah, that is a year they should have won.
You started every season, or sorry, you started every game
against the Capitals down that stretch down a goal.
Yeah, because Ovi's going to score.
So Ovi scoring one goal is the free spot.
Now you've got to decide what his teammates get,
and also if he scores again.
You know what's funny about that?
he didn't have very many multi-goal games no he was just very consistent
that's crazy there's a hat trick in there there's a couple twos but just a lot of ones
kind of kind of makes me wish we were doing this show back then but to be honest like we i
i think we started later that year we did man may that year and we were very young
uh that is crazy also jesse thank you for the tutorial no problem that's a big save everybody
they're all hockey fans out there play a little on hockey reference and use their awesome tools
i had a very difficult time writing a book where i used hockey reference a lot
and this would have been great we worked in hockey uh since forever a very long time
and i didn't you know what it is you know i had no freaking hockey reference um premium
subscription to because i use that a lot because you can really get into what you're looking for
because on the regular one you can't really do all of the criteria if you want to find an exact
game uh worth of like hey what happened when these players did this you know like how many guys
have scored this many goals from this amount of time it'll give you like a list of those players
the premium subscription allows you to do that but hold on a second but sorry yeah i would prefer
to spend my money on a an account that does player cards and has 300 followers though
oh wow come on um come on i i i don't want to spend my premium subscription money on
some site called hockey reference i love hockey what if it could just be some some dude you know
what i'd rather i want some dude i'd rather spend my money on an old guy going hockey used to be
better can we make that a part of our website at sdm.ca uh your angry uncle says stuff about
hockey how many wasted hours did you spend uh when you could have just used a tool like the uh
the shift key on your keyboard oh my god i wish i could go back in time and save
how were you sitting there counting the game logs and be like okay from here to here that's one two
three four five yes yes that sucks that sucks yes it does really sucks yeah yeah i was like
how does jesse do this so quick he just does a lot of prep oh yeah i get with my calculator my
abacus unbelievable i was wondering that too bro oh my god okay well so i got a elite prospect
subscription apparently i need a hockey reference you need all of them yep business expense let's
go okay so uh just so everybody's clear on the wild card spot it's not really the wild card spot
it should be a wild card spot but it is the last position remaining on the east and then we're
going to switch to the west here um philly holds the third spot the islanders are still in it
columbus is still in it but more likely any if anybody's going to catch philadelphia it would
be washington and philadelphia deserves an entire segment onto themselves and we will do that
should they clinch uh by tuesday we'll do it then i think you and jesse should do it alone i was on
this uh i was on this but philly has to play yes a back-to-back yes and they are playing who steve
uh you know i want to say detroit no no who two red teams though two red teams the devils
no the hurricane yep there you go and the sand part of the senators the other other side of the
board provincial board panthers a provincial yeah oh so it is carolina montreal you could have done
that back no it was easier to do it carolina counts as a black team i think their color
primarily is the black one oh really the black red and white of the so i did throw did i throw
everybody off by saying i always no no i think you're right but i i consider them black the
black team i consider them the red and black team yeah we're getting into it yeah so philadelphia
has got to play the canes and the canadians which are two teams that could win their divisions one
of them will that's tough well the hurricanes are resting everybody so that's good news you better
win now the capitals one took care of business today one more game potentially the last in
ovechkin's uh career and it will be against a team that is also chasing columbus columbus
and that will be on tuesday that is going to be very interesting especially if philadelphia
does not win the the uh the hurricanes game you gotta win that game if you're philadelphia you
have everything on the ice give it all i was about to say this could be a potential first
round matchup but the atlantic division's so yoked that no it's third in the metro or
miss the playoffs entirely and i no offense to islanders fans and no offense to columbus fans
anybody like that i want philadelphia to do this or i want washington to do this washington because
ov sid philadelphia because uh the all pennsylvania matchup i think either way sid taking the ice
against either the capitals or the flyers for his first playoff round in three years is so poetic
and perfect that i don't want anyone to jump in there and screw it up one of those two teams must
do this this is just this is just going to Baskin Robbins yeah I don't think you can make a wrong
choice I don't think you can either no oh do I want ice cream or ice cream I'm walking out of
here with ice cream yeah penguins flyers penguins what colors basically oh god I miss ice cream I
know I want it well ladies and gentlemen we're kind of excited to announce that we're partnering
with Moosehead for the playoffs and we want to tell you a little bit about what's going to be
going on here for first off uh you already know that moosehead is the last major brewery in canada
still owned by canadians really yes i did not know that now you know that and that is why we're
launching a segment called 100 clutch canadians presented by moosehead canadian lager here on the
sdpn because we're one of the only digital media companies in the country that's owned by canadians
as well right so there's a lot in common here and the thing about it is we're gonna we're gonna
profile three great Canadian Canadian players throughout the playoffs who had highlight
worthy evenings and we're actually going to warm up midweek so we're going to do this again uh
is it's midweek on the show and we are going to be able to kind of give you a little taste of
what's happening but it even if the Canadian teams are out and thankfully the last couple of years
they haven't been no we've had one all the way go all the way to the finals right maybe we'll get
it again uh we're going to be highlighting the Canadians that actually went to the next level
and that's what the playoffs are all about it's not about your rinky dink bad blue and white team
that really is kind of bad um and you're gonna open that so i don't know what that is i don't
know it's it's about great performances by canadian so be on the lookout for the 100
clutch canadian segment presented by moosehead canadian lager and pick up a 24 pack of moosehead
cans how have you not mentioned moose head
delicious also very good
yeah dude fantastic
I am so
pumped
to be working
with moose head I'm so
pumped and I wish I could show our younger
selves Canada's game
Canada's beer every
play enjoy it with
Canadian moose head
lager 100% Canadian owned
packaged and brewed
right here in Canada check it out

Okay, in the West,
as we kind of mentioned,
Anaheim needs a point
and the playoff drought is over.
One point.
Play in the Canucks, okay?
Edmonton lost last night.
That was a big game.
LA, huge game over Edmonton,
are now in the final wildcard spot
and Leaf fans love that
because they are not only a point up
with a game in hand over Nashville,
but if they're able to actually get this done
and relying on the Kings
to do anything you need them
to do this season
has been extremely difficult.
Yes.
But if they can get this done,
if the Leafs get a second round
pick out of it next year,
but they still get one.
How good does Artemi Panarin
look as a King?
Unreal.
Yeah.
You see his goal?
Yeah.
Oh my God.
That was a pretty good pickup.
Yep.
Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.
I think Green Tree
is going to be a great player.
That was a good move for them.
That was a good move for them, man.
Now, that's kind of
what we're watching in the west um i don't know if you guys want to dive in on any of those we
already kind of mentioned anaheim a little bit earlier in the show in the bed mg and big story
but the ducks getting in like i'm not i'm not gonna dance on detroit being out because i feel
bad for their fans genuinely because i've been there and i also believe in detroit anaheim i'm
fucking dancing just make it just make it because the king they're still not locked in no and the
Kings actually could still catch them,
which could put Anaheim in a wild card spot,
which is crazy to think about.
It is.
Probably not going to happen.
To play...
Would they be playing the Avs?
Yeah.
And you'd get wiped.
Anybody who's playing the Avs,
you're getting erased.
They would get killed.
Yeah.
It's going to be an awesome race to the finish.
And before anybody gives Gary Bettman credit,
it still would have been under a normal playoff format.
I just want to throw that out there.
I'm not sure almost every match we've just talked about would potentially happen anyway.
Would still have happened.
Yeah.
Except for the fact that Dallas and Minnesota are going to play, which is so stupid.
They would never do this.
Someone asked yesterday during the stream, like, would you love to see a one through
16, like league wide?
But it's too much flying.
They would never do it.
I don't think I'd want to see that.
I like conference play.
The league wouldn't do it and the PA wouldn't.
No, it's too much.
It's too much.
I want to talk about the Leafs yesterday.
Well, we have a minute.
Yeah.
The Panthers had roughly $85 million off the ice
if you count the fact that Bobrovsky was sitting on the bench.
Which I do.
I do.
That was intentional.
$85 million off the ice.
So I don't think the roster the Panthers dressed
would have been cap compliant if this was the playoffs.
I don't know if there's a playoff minimum,
but if there was, you'd have to hit it.
That's a great question.
We never have to address that.
No.
No one tanks in the playoffs.
It would be interesting.
Huh.
But the band of Mary Panthers we'd never heard of before won 15 of 18 players, according to George Richards, made a million or less.
That's crazy.
Wow.
15 of 18.
And the Leafs lose this game.
And it did look a little bit like they might have been in it.
William Nylander, once he got that second goal, I'm like, oh, OK, so he's fishing for gold number three.
Well, 30 as well.
He's two back.
Two back at 30.
He looked good.
Oh, he does look good.
He did.
He straight up had a very good game.
He took advantage of the lesser Panthers.
He seemed like the only guy on the Leafs that could,
that had the legs to be like,
I'm going to go out there and skate around everybody.
Do you think he called his brother to ask for a scouting report
on all the AHLers?
On his teammates, too.
Yeah.
He's got to be like, who are these guys?
Is Villanova a good guy?
Is Hames a good guy?
What did we think of the rookie performances, guys?
Like, did you have any takeaways from any of those guys?
I liked seeing Hames in his forecheck.
I don't know.
Yeah.
That's what we're looking at, right?
like first game is get through the game honestly so like Villeneuve I liked uh I saw a stat like
he played more than McCabe in the first 40 minutes yeah which was insane Luke Hames um had a point
who should be a country music singer by the way Luke Hames that's a country singer yeah or like
baseball player on a call-up yeah yeah yeah yeah and later in the season he gets optioned yes you
know anyway uh luke hames he did have the point um but on the lorenz school um he had the stick
check that where he didn't touch the puck but he had the stick check that allowed lorenz to get the
puck and shoot it and score great start kid what did jacob quillen do to craig berube i've been
asking that for weeks i think it was anthony petrelli made the point hey so beau grew coming
in and automatically getting third line center above quillen is one thing luke hames is younger
than quillen and was like decidedly less productive than quillen on the marlies that's not a shot at
hames it's quillen was incredible down there and he's been locked at fourth line hames get this
opportunity on the third i mean i was about to say the third and the fourth line there's basically no
difference that's not true quillen's playing with yarn croak and pesetta that line has one goal
in 2026 and terberg who has been called up sat why because yarn croak needs to play out the stretch
here i don't want to say pesetta too but like pesetta too i'd rather pesetta play okay fine
He's signed next year.
Then take Yarn Croak out.
Yeah.
What are we doing?
Yes.
But, like, it's not cute anymore.
Like, because Quillen has one assist in 20 games.
Like, he was a special part of your minor league team.
And you're like, it just feels like they're actively ruining him.
Well, because Berube doesn't like him and wants him down.
He's playing pointless minutes.
This is my point.
Their point.
I think.
so here's here's the scary part jesse i want to get a sense of this everybody likes craig
berube the person yes everybody he's very well liked in the organization why do we have to start
every conversation here i think that one's a little different that's not just like uh
adam likes a guy it's within the organization people enjoy craig berube's presence which being
a head coach in national hockey league it kind of matters yeah because if people don't like you
that's just a good excuse to let you go yes so he doesn't he passes that first test like we've
the barrier that is people gotta like you craig brube passes that test got it and i i think i
would like craig brube immensely like i feel i just like who he is i bet you wouldn't say that
to his face steve correct yeah don't like yeah craig brube staring down his nose at you yeah
i'd walk away it doesn't make me less of a man it makes me clever what do you say it to his face
you psycho that's craig berube yeah exactly anyway now so berube is a great person and
well liked within the organization apparently even the players yes okay here's the problem i have
this guy can't and somebody posed the question i want to know what you guys think of this
how many guys get a gm job and immediately fire a coach
because it's a bullet it's a bullet now i think the incoming guy should just do it because i
still think you'd get another bullet if you hang on then you got the one bullet you might get two
all right so uh the fans that's why people don't come to toronto oh the media how about
the dumbass parameters you've you've put on the job completely dumbass parameters
the ceo already came in and said we don't want a full rebuild okay so if we're playing a game
guess who flick flick flick flick flick all the guys who would like to do a new rebuild
okay so how many guys are left uh i'd like to come in and fire the coach oh okay well we don't
really want you to do that flick flick flick flick flick flick why don't you just run the
damn team keith name yourself gm well no no no we're putting all these parameters on it right
well you would know i'm adding to your point oh okay good you wouldn't have seen it last night
because you were streaming oh and it was your last stream of the season for the leafs and
mercifully so god um i wore that tank helmet the whole time i i am doing one more stream
on wednesday night game 82 because why the hell not dude no one's playing you know that right i
don't think anyone's gonna watch but you know what they're gonna be people that are gripper nation
shows up god bless them and we always have a good time i've i've straight up just people get mad at
me like why aren't you calling the game i'm like you want me to call this i'm not calling this
we're gonna chat funny i didn't get that feedback at all i'm not calling this why aren't you calling
the game oh yeah well that night too there's not even really a good playoff game no tampa plays the
rangers sabers play stars red wings play panthers sharks play black hawks like there's nothing you
could have you could use to entertain yourself during the leaves no there's no scoreboard
watching there's nothing oh dude drew played the goal horn every time the kraken scored that's
awesome i love that in the flames game because the kraken won and that was good for the league yeah
it's great for the leaves jays are playing the brewers okay we'll scoreboard watch that
That'll be a more important game.
How about that?
Cool, man.
I'll be tuned in.
God.
Let's screen.
There's not even like a Formula One race
to look forward to until May.
Like, it's crazy.
Now, so I'm looking at this
and I'm going, okay.
So the Leafs have this guy
who's a really good person.
Mm-hmm.
Really good person.
Okay.
And they have him as a coach.
They're going to bring in a guy
and Elliott Friedman said
on headlines last night
that their focus is on one person
to assume both roles.
President of Hockey Ops and GM.
That's correct.
Assuming that,
and here's what I take away from that
before everybody runs and hides
and their hair's on fire.
President of Hockey Ops and General Manager
with their own AGMs in support
who will divvy up some of those tasks.
So ultimate decision-making power would,
like, let's say it's,
i'm the president of hockey ops and you and jesse and maddie are my agms and i'm a gm as well you
you might be uh trades guy jesse might be ahl guy maddie might be um analytics person and
basically we divvy these out in a more clear and concise ways you can see brandon printem
fitting into that you can see even maybe ryan hardy fitting into that ryan hardy is the gm
of the Marlies right now.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So there's some title finagling there.
Yes, and I think part of the reason
that they might be looking
for just the one person
is that the people
that they are targeting
might be difficult to get
if you don't have
that president's title
because sometimes
they're under contract, you see.
So maybe they're actually being,
I'm trying to be polypositive here,
maybe, and I'm crossing my fingers,
they're going after somebody
that we're not even fully expecting.
I want them to get Sonny Mehta,
believe me.
But I'm looking at this and I'm going, what about some of these long-tenured GMs elsewhere that might have an out in their contract if it's a president's role?
Like who?
Tim Nill's already off the table.
Spitballing.
Nill is already off the table.
Nill's off the table.
And by the way, the way these outs sometimes work is that you don't even have to be at the end of your contract.
That's the way an out works at a contract.
Right.
But why wouldn't you call Tampa and go, is Julian Breezewald?
available for a phone call for president of hockey ops then tampa would immediately promote him
unless he already is yeah and and honestly force them to spend the money i don't care
yeah sure just do it uh what about i mean there's a couple of guys apparently in florida there's a
brett peterson guy who's also done who interviewed with nashville nashville yeah um i would
potentially you got to look at all the teams that are like extremely good and go how do we raid them
right what about colorado i don't hear anything about the colorado front office
uh the name i keep hearing out of colorado uh is like for as a candidate someone should go after
is mark letestu uh who's the coach of the former player colorado eagles who has been bonkers this
year but ahl success does not necessarily mean nhl success uh dan bilesma sheldon keith though
sheldon keith really good regular season paul maurice was an ahl coach with the leafs believe
it or not he was but like he wasn't hired because he was an otherworldly ahl coach no true right
with this with this crazy record manny malhotra won a calder cup last year yep as well david carl
just won the frozen four three and four years or something or three and five years uh so that's
another name that could be out there i'm just saying this they do have the opportunity to
surprise us they could fumble their way into a smart decision do i have faith in it two and five

everything i hear everything i read it's not great it's so bad like everyone like i i get
asked every day what's going on with the leafs every day friends family online babies babies
babies ask you wow literal babies and uh i go they're fucking it up leo i i you wouldn't believe
how much they're fucking it up they they uh i don't like what i'm hearing and i'm just being
honest and like you said they have the opportunity to surprise and i'm excited for that
the right person needs to get their hooks into keith pelly uh because if the wrong one gets it
it's going to be a problem you know what assholes they're going to look like
by the way if sunny meta does not sign with them what well you hired his agent to consult for you
you hired his agent to and we all we all went oh that's a conflict oh oh oh okay i understand why
you did it and then another eastern conference team is going to get them you're going to look
like assholes yeah it's like why is jeff jackson running the oilers because he's connor mcdave
because he's the best man for the job of course same reason chris knobloch's there his only job
his only job was to get mcdavid to extend and he did it and he did it successfully and that's why
you hire that man like you have one goal in the situation so you hire this search firm so you can
secure sunny's services but the idea that keith pelly is entering these this search looking for
one person and like that's what he's looking for at the at the outset and those are elliot freeman's
words and elliot freeman works for some organization uh a sports net who's owned by
rogers who also owns the other team so i wonder where he's hearing this from that to me is a big
concern because when you're entering this search the way keith pelly kind of outlined it to us is
that it's going to be a blank slate we're going to look for the best person we're going to go
we're going to hire whatever firm we know we want to go analytics but that's kind of all we're
leading on and now a week after that a week and a half after that we're already hearing that there's
some criteria there we're already hearing no rebuild we're already hearing one guy so it's
not a blank slate you know what you want and you're not letting the smart people do the work
and present you the smart options you are going after what you desire and that's why on the day
of the press conference after we did our show i sat here and i said there's a good chance that
he can just keep craig berube around because he likes the guy and he doesn't know what he's doing
Keith Kelly is way in over his head, and he is clearly making very personal choices in what he desires.
He is not listening to people around him.
He's in a position where he doesn't know how to run a pro sports team because he hasn't done that at this level.
He ran the Argos, and then he left for a decade and a half, and he ran golf, and now he's back, and he's running the Maple Leafs, and he thinks he knows what he needs to do to run the Maple Leafs.
ran golf doesn't ran he doesn't know so there should be concern from leafs fans going forward
about his decision making and what could happen with this next year of leafs hockey and and adam
you know about this a little bit better than i do part of the reason pelly has that job is because
he could talk to both bell and rogers and larry larry tannenbaum as well okay great well two of
those three are gone exactly which is why he's on thin ice so why is he there well it's already been
it's already spec like i've already talked about this for a couple of months i saw a story forget
who has it today it's it's either the athletic or one of the canadian newspapers has it and it's
talking about how mark shapiro could be running all this and you've been saying that since like
october because mark shapiro um has a great working relationship with ed rogers and mark
shapiro has proven himself to ed rogers and up until last season mark shapiro hadn't proven
himself to blue jays fans but he has now right one season one season this season's not growing
it's not going great but it didn't go great in april last year either so i'm just i'm i'm coping
hard jesse i think it'd be better if he was a doctor for god's i agree yeah i think i think
here's here's what could happen and this is a disaster scenario okay i've already said on this
show that i think steve salivate yeah yeah you guys a disaster scenario oh yeah there's steve
done it don't wind me up don't don't twist my let him talk let him do his thing
what steve your pants are getting tighter yeah so what
so so let's say it's sunny meta mike gillis who's apparently getting his second interview
at some point this week whatever i keep hearing that too yep okay some one of those guys comes
it mike gillis is a smart guy i'm not against him getting hired but so then you you you retain
craig berube okay you retain craig berube and the team doesn't get that much better over the summer
because spoiler alert it can't you went through the free agents yesterday steve on the stream
what did you say no not great not great you can overpay for mason marchman you can overpay for
Darren Radish.
You can definitely overpay for Mittenberry and Darren Radish.
You can bring home Riley Smith.
Listen, I like...
Oh, not Riley Smith.
Stop banging that drum!
Yeah, I know.
No Riley Smith.
Stop it!
Mittenberry!
Go!
Charlie Coyle, I don't think the Leafs would be in on
because he's 34 and he's having a career year.
And sometimes you find happiness.
Stay in Columbus.
You know what I mean?
And Marchman, I think, is great and a very good player.
But I think being a UFA, you're going to be overpaid.
That's just generally.
Coyle-Lumbus.
i love it i love it yes so i'm sitting here and i'm looking at this and it really doesn't matter
who you put in that gm executive position the leafs start slow next year we're looking at
a game 15 game 20 firing of the head coach no and it's babcock again it's babcock potentially
They stole the words off my tongue.
Holy shit.
They don't learn a fucking thing.
No.
They're not capable of it.
It's not in their bag.
Holy shit.
I haven't even given you the icing.
Holy shit.
The icing is not.
It's not a thing they're capable of.
Fuck me.
Holy.
Dumbest team in pro sports.
Fuck my life.
Icing on the cake.
Holy, if they do that.
Is that.
Holy.
If they start slow and Berube loses his job.
they've missed out on cassidy yeah gm has to use the bullet yeah right yeah and keith pelly
probably gets fired too can i give you the other scenario give me the scenario i hope this one's
more likely no no this one's worse oh shit okay so leafs start off slow next year and that's enough
to convince ownership that a rebuild is necessary and then you get tear down here they'd be late to
their own funerals where they're trading holy shit they're trading everything that isn't tied
down and it's like we got four years of tearing this thing down and rebuilding oh four years
what about that you want doomsday they'd be late to their own funeral and then you keep around chief
because who cares who's the coach to this point
and then you fire him when you're trying to get good again
no you can't keep chief
in that you can't keep chief in that because he
does he's not why not he's not
good I guess if you're loading up on veterans
to sell because that at least
did laugh no they got to go through an evaluation period
no they got to
evaluate it's just now the GM
that's there and he they keep
hire a firm to see if he's doing well you got to be
good this year and then he tries to be
good and then the team sucks and he's like
I just got here you got to give me a
and then now he's tasked with next year tearing it down my my message to i hope that's not the
scenario i'm just doomsdaying it now listen it's so funny because we keep hearing how the leafs
management doesn't hear anything that we do and then through the grapevine from time to time we
hear well they weren't happy with that less often than less often you think i give them full marks
because we say what we want yes and they never ever come back and go hey f you ever no no one's
ever told us not to say anything never no certain players have but not never the least or never the
least or through conduits sure and i think i think that if gillis or meta or whoever else
gets brought in here you must have it in your contract you must have it not handshook i've
worked for this company before handshakes do not know in writing in black and white ink you have
the right to fire the coach and hire the coach that you want immediately if you need that in
your contract you're already fucked uh well you'd be surprised what some of these guys put in their
contract i think you need to have that written down and you need to you need the next guy cannot
be and i can't believe we haven't made it a shirt yet i just got here this guys the next guy's got
to be like here's what i'm doing fucking tomorrow yeah like i want to know here's my here's my five
point plan and i know they can't really give us everything but you've got to come in and go oh
well we're going to look at this and we're going to evaluate no no no no no you're coming in with
potentially to a top five overall pick enviable that's a good spot to don't accept the job until
after the lottery you know what you should trade it down for a second and a third and a player to
be named oh adam kyle i'm kidding with all that said there i don't know what i'm ballparking it
35 chance maybe a little higher 40 chance we sit here on our friday show and craig brube is already
gone you think because wednesday's last game of the season and they may have already made the
decision and we hear about it on thursday locker clean out is thursday right or friday they haven't
decided right we'll hear tomorrow i'll know tomorrow when locker clean i'll hire a firm
to figure out which day is best for locker room cleanup well whenever we find out we will know
and then we will see where it goes audience rogers versus rogers the audiobook is 11 hours 17
minutes if you listen to it on 1.2 speed it's less you will get a better idea of how the owner
of this team thinks you can skip over all the stuff about his dad if you want to make the book
even shorter if you just want to learn about how this guy operates it's a great book like
adam thank you for bringing it into my life but it's you're like oh maybe they'll do this and i'm
like maybe the fuck not actually because i already read the the playbook on how this dude thinks and
maybe not yep god yeah anyway so we'll leave it at that hey if if it's gillis or sunny meta are
is your outlook a little bit better uh yeah good let me let me tell you what i've done
let me tell you what i've done i don't know if i'm going to be home for the final lfr of the
season i don't know if i'm going to be in the blue room and it feels wrong to not be there
for the final lfr is that because of cbc nerds yeah because it's canada reads um
um i've already shot 75 of the final lfr of the year whoa i've already shot it i sent it to drew
last night i shot it last night what did you do yeah it's it's a direct letter to keith pelly
oh and it is primarily a letter it's not it is depends on what kind of love you you're into but
But it's a letter to him, and it's largely based on his love for Craig Berube
and if they keep him.
So exactly what we're talking about.
It's Sunday.
Jesse, they're not doing it.
They're not doing it.
I know what I think is going to happen.
What do you think is going to happen?
Craig Berube is head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs game one of the 26-27 season.
then i tell you what i didn't go hard enough that's what i think is gonna happen i i'm gonna
shoot a little intro i'm gonna talk about the game you don't give a shit about the game from
the hotel room yeah it's i don't know i might walk down to maple leaf square i might go down
to the cn tower i don't know i'll be in the core um the rest of it it like the game 82 you're not
showing up you you don't want to know what i thought about the 82nd game of the season who
cares gives a shit but the only thing that matters is the future it's the only thing
because the president sucks so much ass if this guy is even thinking about doing this shit we're
so fucked so fucked the head coach has the ceo wrapped around his finger what kind of perverted
way of running an organization is this so like one thing keith pelly's done in his career right
is he's he's in the man's in his 60s he's run many successful organizations or been on the
business side on the business side yes but even businesses on the business side even even like
bean counters have a pecking order have a hierarchy what you know but imagine you just had
your favorite i don't know accountant and they were they were able to skip over their boss and
their boss's boss and their boss's boss's boss and go straight to the owner of the company and
be like here's what i think about accounting that'd be a stupid way to run your business
and they have this coach
i'm blowing the whole video is that that's a that's what you that's what you're going
for in the video it's a lot longer than that can we get more it's uh
jesse what are you setting the odds at for a brew bay coaching game one next season
oh i don't know you know you're gonna say i said what did i say 30 so there you go 30 30 that no
30 that yeah i said 30 he's fired this week what's the earliest but i could see i could see
them delaying it a little and then maybe they have candidates and then pelly did say that it would be
up to the next year yeah they have the candidates there the candidates say we want cassidy and then
So in two weeks' time, Berube is then fired, and then we go from there.
It's just the this week thing, if they have the season-ending press conference
with Berube, it's usually not the case that they have that conference
and then he gets fired in a couple weeks.
That doesn't usually make sense.
Usually if you let him talk there, he's going to stick around.
So I think if we get – if there's like a Monday Berube thing
and then he's just going to stick around for the summer,
it would be a little awkward.
but this is also a very unique scenario yeah they don't know what they're i'm trying to talk
through this because there's so many different avenues with this organization because i don't
even know if they know what they're doing so i'm trying to guess what they're thinking at this time
the funniest outcome is they fire him and i gotta redo the video that's easily the funniest videos
dropping wednesday night so yes either way you're gonna be he's not gonna get fired before
thursday morning i guess you're right thursday is the first day that he could be fired well i tell
you what like all my or not all my concerns a lot of my concerns will be addressed if he is
fired the the i keep going back to this because people talk about oh maybe you shouldn't have
fired shanahan no no that was still right it was dumb not to replace him that was they should have
gotten rid of the position yeah it was objectively a mistake and we know that now the poison pill
he fired dubas brings in brad and i'm fairly certain before he even brought in bad uh wow
wow what a freudian before he even brought in brad called the core for matthews tavaris
marner and nylander and said you're not going anywhere yeah he did also did interview mark
bergevin in there too don't forget yes his two picks were treliving bergeron bergevin yeah and
he always knew he was going with treliving yeah he knew since brad left calgary that he had that
in his back pocket no matter what like maybe bergevin surprised him and he's like oh i want
to go with him but he always knew it was going to be brad like okay so you can't trade anyone from
the core four and you're also not even allowed on the draft floor for the first pick what a cushy
gig you didn't have to do shit brad okay welcome to the prestigious gig of being general manager
of the toronto maple leafs your first uh action with this team is to do absolutely nothing of
significance whatsoever it was the poison pill um you as soon as july 1st arrived you couldn't
trade marner and you decided willie was too good to trade so you kept him too and that's why you
were living on borrowed time from that moment onward and that's why shanahan does needed to
be fired because he had lost his ways by the end there needed to be fired the moment pelly got in
the door and he needed a year because i just got him right away and then pelly decided to not
replace that position and leave brad to just run the organization which was absurd and then now

You're richer than you think.
I want to say this before we go.
A couple of things.
Number one, the Islanders have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.
Oh!
Islanders are out.
They were playing the Canadians.
And they lost.
Is Pete DeBoer the problem?
Pete DeBoer might be the problem.
Second thing, and this is really important to continue our Habs Pander Fest.
Jesse Blake, Nick Suzuki today became the first Montreal Canadian
to hit 100 points in a season since who?
Surely someone on the 93 team, at least.
Well, you'd think, right?
Because it's early 90s and a lot of scoring.
Guy Lafleur.
Guy Lafleur, great point.
Yeah, no, Mats Naslund.
oh matt's naslin who by the way you've probably never heard of unless you're from montreal but
he is 12th all-time in montreal canadian scoring wow he so he played in the 80s he played in the
80s wow he was known as the petite viking uh great name mario trombley who later became the uh
the general manager in montreal said when he arrived that the habs only received half a player
and they would get the other half later uh because he was five foot seven like i said
uh but he also was a great quote yeah it's a great quote he won the lady bing in 87 88 i'm
giving him his his uh his his due here and had five uh assists in mario lemieux's six point
all-star game in 1988 so he played on mario lemieux's line in 1988 so this guy is no relation
to matt uh marcus naslin by the way they're just both from sweden and the last name naslin
but yes he was 170 centimeters five foot seven inches 161 pounds guys wow i've been 161 pounds
in several decades it's been a long long time that was an era where how should i put this i
don't know if uh blood testing were as stringent i don't know if there were some giants yeah back
then yeah with large neck veins and for him to succeed in a league like that crazy yeah now
jesse my question to you is what does this say about the montreal canadians this year nick suzuki
cup stanley cup they got a shot well they're in the playoffs everybody's gonna shot the playoff
i think montreal if i were to audit out on teams i'd take to win the stanley cup they'd be in my
top three their first round opponent no matter who it is is going to be so good and losing dobson
hurts so much but if they get through the first round they could do anything they could they could
do anything i think they're incredibly deep you know dobish was only drafted 2020 yeah it's crazy
isn't it stupid yeah just hate it all they're good for them i think that was one of the biggest
problems with this team it's how do we fix goaltending they solved it and if i'm ranking
biggest problems second one's probably who's gonna center the the lower levels of this the
line combinations philip donnell yeah like they've they've figured out their errors well and like
you know okay losing dobson's terrible you're replacing him with a fifth overall pick
not bad uh they're good they're gonna get better yeah uh by the way philip dineau was on agent
provocateur uh this week and he was awesome told some great stories so check that out we'll wrap
it up there but i just wanted to say thank you everybody now our schedule's a bit weird this week
uh we will be recording again on tuesday yeah time depending on steve when his reading show
should be tuesday afternoon tuesday afternoon yeah you'll probably hear that like tuesday night
you know into your wednesday morning and then friday we should be back to regular schedule
because you are done shooting your big time show cbc i'm hoping to be hung over because i won
yeah that'd be fun but then there's also locker clean out for the leafs which could be thursday

before that it wouldn't make sense this is what would we talk about so that might be a friday
night kind of shows friday afternoon so yeah keep keep your podcast feed you know handy that's
